he Saki Naka police has received a complaint against well known celebs of Bollywood after a video clip of 'All India Backc**d [AIB] Knockout' show went viral on Youtube wherein the participants of the show had allegedly used profanity in front of a live audience at a show held at the NSCI, Worli on December 20, 2014 but was aired only last week on Youtube. The police have ordered an

inquiry into a complaint filed by Akhilesh Tiwari which was against director Karan Johar, actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. The complaint in this case alleged that the trio had used language which goes against the ethos of the Indian culture terming it 'filthy and abusive'. The 'AIB Knockout Roast' event was held in Worli on December 20 last year where various top Bollywood actors including Deepika Padukone, Soni Razdan mother of Alia Bhatt and her sister Sha-

heeen Bhatt and Sunjay Kapoor were also present. The AIB is a popular channel on Youtube with the founders of the channel known to organise spoofs on many celebrities and politicians in India. Till yesterday, the AIB channel in Youtube had over a lakh views and AIB itself has in excess of eight lakh 55 followers. inister for Cultural Affairs Vinod Tawde yesterday ordered a probe against the producers of All India Bakchod (AIB) Knockout show that was held on December 20, and was uploaded on You Tube last week for alleged offensive content. The show which was filmed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel auditorium near Worli was graced by Bollywood actors Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Speaking to newspersons he stated that the police probe will find out whether the producers had the performance licence on the basis of the censor board certificate. He said that if there is no certificate for the show, then an FIR will be lodged against the producers. The Minister for Cultural Affairs stated that to air such a derogatory show is a crime.

Tawde added that the authorities at the auditorium should also have checked on the certificate from the producers. The AIB Roast is the first of its kind in the country featured a panel of eight and 'Roastmaster' Karan Johar putting the Gunday actors – Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor through an expletivelaced hour-and-a-half of jokes about their on-screen and offscreen lives. The AIB is a collective of comics Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi, Gursimran Khamba and Ashish Shakya who show their sketches on a YouTube channel.

hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday warned All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi for making derogatory remarks aimed at the Hindu community. Speaking to newspersons at the launch of Sena's 'Shiv Arogya Sewa' Telemedicine project, he said that if the MIM chief intends to make any comments on the

Hindu community then the Sena will not allow his rally in Pune to be held on February 4. Amidst contradictory reports over police approval for Owaisi's rally, his party MLA Waris Pathan claimed that the police has not denied permission to hold the rally. Sources disclosed that the subject of MIM rally is reported to be on the Muslim reservation issue and the aim of the party is to expand its support base in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Sena sources

disclosed that party president Uddhav has instructed the party cadres not to allow the rally to be held if Owaisi made any reference towards the Hindu community. For the MIM the direct opponent in Maharashtra is the Shiv Sena and the latter has adopted a hardline stance on the issue of Hindutva. Earlier, while replying to queries over the recent verbal clashes between the Sena and BJP leaders, Uddhav denied that there were differences with the BJP. He said

that the Sena aim was to implement the promises made that it had made to people before assembly elections. He added that the Sena will continue working towards fulfilling the pre-poll promises. When asked whether the project was that of the Sena or of the state government, Uddhav remarked that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is supportive of the Sena initiative and that he will extend all help and co-operation from his side.

Night shelters to operate 24x7 4 out of 5 Night Shelters in Mira Bhayandar Are Shut Due To Crimes By Suresh Golani

o ensure round-the-clock accommodation for the marginalized sections of society, the existing night shelters in Mira Bhayandar will now transform into 24x7 all weather refuge units for the urban homeless under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM). Following directions from the Supreme Court in 2011, the MBMC had started five night shelters in the region. However thanks to the non-existence of a scrutiny and security system, four out of the five night shelters have been abruptly shut down owing to a sharp rise in criminal cases and undue advantage by anti-social elements.

The Nirbhaya Squad by the GRP Only one shelter located in the premises of the Fire Brigade office in Bhayandar(west) is currently operational. As per the new Scheme of Shelter For Urban Homeless (SUH), the night shelters would be now upgraded to round-the-clock accommodation facilities for the destitute and the additional feature of a kitchen will be part of the scheme.

“We have chalked out an elaborate plan to upgrade the shelters as per the guidelines of the new scheme. Four out of the five shelters will become operational within a fortnight.” confirmed Social Welfare Officer, Deepali Powar. The central government will give 75 to 90 percent towards the operation & maintenance cost of the shelter for five years.

Nirbhaya Squad on track to being success

hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with a range of different security forces including Coast Guards and local police reviewed the security measures along the Mumbai coast on Monday. Coast Guard officials said CM expressed satisfaction with the existing measures and called for a few more security measures. CM Fadnavis told the Coast Guard that piracy and smuggling on the coast of the Maharashtra should be dealt with an iron rod. He called for better coordination between the

Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Police which would be ideal for better fortification along the coast. CM Fadnavis told the agencies representatives “I am happy with the present security measurements. Still we have to be ready for tomorrow's challenges.” Indian Coast Guard IG SPS Basra said, “It was special coastal security review.” After the 26/11 attack the city's coastal security caught the imagination of the nation, with the result that Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard took several security measures to bolster the security.

he Government Railway Police (GRP) started Nirbhaya Squad in September last year in order to curb crimes against women on local trains and stations has been successful. The team which comprises 15 women police officers deployed on the Central and Harbour lane and 15 deployed on the western lane have been successful in nabbing thieves and eve teasers, with the team having caught more than 50 offenders. Some of the officers are clad in veil (burkha) to nab the offenders. Cases of more than Rs 2 lakh have been solved by the Nirbhaya Squad till now. The squad is being beefed up as it involves training more women police officers and providing them with proper equipment. A senior official from the GRP, said, “We are teaching the officers with methods of identifying thieves and criminals, we are also educating them in methods of interrogating the criminals and keeping a tab on the activities happening inside the local trains

and also on the stations. Currently we are in the process of taking in more officials for the Nirbhaya Squad and then we would train them. The squad so far has been successful and we are looking forward to getting better in 2015.” The official further added, “Presently Muslim women GRP officials are wearing the veil during their inspection in the local trains, to detect offenders. The other women GRP personnel have also being asked to arrange for a veil. The entire group of 30 women will have to go on this drive, wearing the veil, on rotation. This is an apt method as the officers have been successful in catching hold of thieves and eve teasers. With such initiatives the women commuters will feel safe while commuting in local trains.” Ravinder Singal, GRP commissioner, said, “The number of molestation cases registered in 2014 was 55, while in 2013 it was 41. The squad is equipped to tackle offenders and curb crime against women.” aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

Once a tea vendor, the PM makes chai for Obama

The prime minister has held several chai pe charcha after he became the PM. The most memorable one was his offer of tea to Barack Obama, American president who came to India as the chief guest on R-Day. The PM sat with the great guest and himself made tea for him. He offered the tea to the guest and Obama added salt to it. And the two held important chai pe charcha.

Rahul Gandhi pulled him up. He must have realised it was a mistake. What he said, he must have thought, might go against the party. But Mani Shankar Iyer must have thought he had something which would affect the image of Narendra Modi. Mani Shankar Iyer disclosed that Narendra Modi was a tea vendor. And he added: “He can come here (it was the AICC session) and supply tea for us”. He was ridiculing Modi. A mere tea vendor trying to become a prime

minister! Little did he know that Narendra Modi would turn the remark to his advantage. While addressing rallies, Narendra Modi declared he was a tea vendor — he was a simple, poor man like anyone in the crowd he was addressing. The fact that Narendra Modi was like all of them, touched a sympathy nerve. He had established a bond with the people. And Narendra Modi said it again and again: I am a tea vendor.

crowds to the racecourse. Among the people that came to Mahalakshmi racecourse on that day are many first timers. They may not be interested in horses at all, but they go home with an exciting collective experience. The race starts right in front of the stands. As the horses get in, everyone begins to shout. And when they are off, there is a roar. And when finally, the runners arrive at the final stretch, each one is shouting for one’s choice. There is a deafening roar, when the winner crosses the win post. Both the enclosures — the members’ and the first — are

packed with men, women and children. They came from all classes, with high expectations of a grand time. And what is inexplicable is that everyone is well-dressed in their Sunday best. Among the members, there is competition among women. You can see women — young and old — dressed as per the latest fashion. Racing perhaps is one sport where betting is legal. But no other race day is like the Derby day. There is magic on that day. There is no other way of explaining why all roads lead to Mahalakshmi on the Derby day.

ou may have to wait for some more time for a smoother ride in the Western Suburbs since proposal of resurfacing and reconstruction of roads in Western suburbs with Rs. 1800 crore is now facing a cash crunch. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made the proposal for repairing and reconstruction of around 200 roads. Now, the civic body will have to wait for Budget provision. Under the five year master plan of roads, the civic body has made proposal for reconstructing and resurfacing of roads in western suburbs for Rs. 3,600 crore two months back. There are total more than 14 proposals prepared for road works in western suburbs. However, since CA (Chief Accountant) department has informed road department about non availability of fund, the road department has now decided to keep on hold the proposal of Rs.1800 resurfacing of roads. A source from Road Department said, “The proposal is ready and we have identified the roads which need repairs urgently. There are around 200 roads (Concrete and Asphalt roads) that will be repaired with the cost of Rs.1800 crore. However, there is issue of fund since CA department has told us to concentrate on second proposal of repair of roads that is also costing BMC Rs.1800 crore.” He further added that, “The contracts will be give for two years excluding monsoon. The second proposal of Rs.1800 crore is ready and it will be soon tabled in Stand-

We have realised that if we start the procedure of tendering now then we will get all the formalities completed by April only. And problem is

n Arun Gawli aide, who had been convicted in Sena leader Kamalakar Jamshandekar's murder, was held by the crime branch on Sunday evening from Saki Naka after he had jumped parole in April 2013 from Nashik jail. Identified as Pratap Godse (35), the accused was lodged in Nashik jail. Arun Gawli himself and 11 others were convicted in the murder in August 2012. According to an officer from the unit-10 of the crime branch, Godse was released on parole on April 1 in 2013 and was supposed to report back to the prison by June 10 the same year but failed to do so. Realizing he had jumped parole, prison officials filed a complaint with the Bhayander police here where Godse’s guarantor resides. “He had been working around construction sites in Chattisgarh and used to also meet Arun Gawli at courts in Mumbai whenever there was

the Congress also put itself into action mode. According to state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant the hike was unjustified. “Though the international crude oil prices have gone down by 65 per cent, only 11 per cent of the common man has benefited. What is the need of this fare hike? Is this the acche din promised by the BJP by taxing the layman.” Sawant further added that last year immediately after coming to power, the BJP had hiked the Railway fares. It was the Congress agitation, he said, which forced the government to roll back the hike partially. “The BEST fare hike should be immediately rolled back,” he demanded.

Arun Gawli aide nabbed a hearing. He had also refurbished his physique and become more muscular with heavy exercise so as to remain unidentified,” said an officer. Gawli is currently lodged at Taloja prison. Godse’s deceased parents, lived at Saki Naka which he often had been visiting since his escape

to catch up with friends and acquaintances. Learning about his presence in the city through an informant, a team of crime branch cops les by senior PI G. Jahagirdar, PI S. Sindarkar, API Sanjay Joshi, and constables Sachin Khanvilkar, Sridhar Chavan and Sunil Tawde picked him up from Saki Naka.

C.Vidyasagar Rao, Governer of Maharashtra and Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister,Maharashtra applauding M. Hamid Ansari Vice -President of India after his speech at IMC's Symposium -'Wealth & Value Creators' in the city yesterday.

BIG BROTHER TO KEEP CLOSE WATCH ON CRIMINALS Continued from pg 1 « The project is in progress and will take few more months to get into full swing. The state government had appointed private agencies to develop Central Command Center, Divisional Command Center, local Reading Centers, gathering of huge real time data of pictures, its storage, processing and retrieval of it as and when required. After the 26/11 attack on the city, the state government and the BMC had installed few thousand cameras at crucial spots in the city. However, the agencies do not possess mega storage to maintain the huge data generated through thousands of cameras and the requisite man power to monitor the screens on a continuous basis. But that is all going to change with the authorities hell-bent on creating the necessary infrastructure to see this project through. Presently, these cameras are under utilised, and used only for traffic purposes and on some occasions the BMC disaster center use it to inspect flooding spots in the city. This real time picture intelligence, when utilised to the hilt will be advanced platform of data storage and what's more can be suitably retrieved when required. According to sources in the Home Ministry, thousands of cameras will be installed to

Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria noted, “We have plans to install additional 6,000 cameras which would be installed at sensitive places and hotbeds of recurring criminal activities. Sitting in the office our staff will keep an eye on the anti social elements.” Sources who are closely monitoring the progress of the project said, “The Central Command Center will have sophisticated software like face recognition software and readers.” Every police station will have a reading center which will be equipped with huge screens. At sensitive places, during the procession of Ganesh Utsav and Moharram, Id -e - Milad the police will keep an eagle eye on the surrounding areas through the cameras. Maria said, “These cameras will work as deterrent measures against local criminals and habitual traffic offenders.” In case of any accidents, incidents, fights or blasts, the police will insert a facerecognition-software. The software will search habitual offenders in close proximity to the crime scene. If the

Poll scene in Delhi: Attack becomes personal

f what a new social group says is true, Aam Aadmi Party is not as clean as its chief Arvind Kejriwal wants to make it out to be. The group has alleged that the party is involved in money laundering. The party is supporting a bogus private company and helping them to carry out corrupt schemes. Money comes as funds to the AAP and this is transferred to companies which carry out various scams. The fight between AAP and BJP today has become personal. Both the parties dig up stories of the past and hurl mud missiles at each another. There is lot of sound and fury in the poll battlefield in Delhi. It looked as if initially the AAP scored some advantageous poll points. The party carried a personal attack on Kiran Bedi the prime minister’s choice for the post of the chief minister. It looked as if the BJP is losing the verbal battle. Kiran Bedi is no politician. She herself says so. Evidently, she could not cope with the challenge thrown at her by BJP’s stalwarts. She made a couple of naive statements. And finally the BJP realised its attack must be intensified. The party’s president Amit Shah has taken over and is directing requited operations. Top leaders of the BJP have joined the campaign and along with local leaders are assisting Kiran Bedi in her fight against the AAP. As many as 200 BJP’s MPs have joined the campaign in Delhi. And with the latest charge of involvement in scams, Arvind Kejriwal’s chance of becoming the chief minister has diminished a great deal.

RIME Minister Narendra Modi must be regretting that he invited President Barrack Obama for the Republic Day. The latter made no secret of demolishing the Bhartiya Janata Party’s ‘ghar wapsi’ slogan and the other programmes related to Hindutva ideology. He reminded India of its commitment to religious freedom, consecrated in the constitution. A more charitable explanation can be that Modi wanted his Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) to know what the democratic world thought about its new zeal for a Hindu Rashtra. Whatever the case, the BJP has got such a rebuke that it will be difficult for the party to show its face in the democratic world. President Obama reminded the Indian nation that it can succeed so long as it is not splintered along religious lines and allowed people to freely “profess, practice and propagate” religion. Whether the BJP has liked his frank statement or not, the nation as a whole is happy that a tall leader like Obama has reminded the country of its pluralistic ethos. Some BJP leaders are upset because they have been hinting at building the Ram temple at the site where the demolished Babri Masjid stood.

has cautiously moved towards America knowing well which side of the bread is buttered. It may soon be followed by proximity with Australia and Japan. These two countries are already on the American side. Washington seems to have no doubt in its thinking that its real adversary is Beijing. America cannot find a better partner than a larger and economically burgeoning India. That is the reason why Beijing has reacted adversely to President Obama’s visit and has warned India not to be taken in by America’s overtures. New Delhi is sensitive to China’s sensitivities. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is herself going to Beijing to assure it that India’s friendship with America is not at the expense of China. Beijing is not naïve about the possible dangers. It understands that India is the only power in the region which can challenge China. True, its 1962 victory against India is a

Fallout as Indian leans to US The visit of President Obama has some other fallout regarding India’s status in the international affairs. Probably, realizing this one Pakistani television channel telephoned me to sum up the outcome of Obama’s visit. I said in reply: A tilt towards America to the chagrin of China. Let me explain. Even during the Cold War when New Delhi was leading the non-alignment movement, its deference to Moscow was apparent. Since India provided a stable and reliable channel to the Soviet Union, Washington would take New Delhi’s tilt in its stride. Today, Moscow is neither strong nor commands support from what was the then eastern Europe. True, President Vladimir Putin has put a strong foot forward. But he is conscious of his limitations. Ukraine’s standard of revolt is one example. America’s support to it is open and public. So much so, a question to President Obama at his press conference at Delhi brought his strong support to Ukraine without any ifs or buts. Prime Minister Modi, a post-cold war leader, is conscious of America’s military and economic prowess, compared to weak Russia’s. He is also pragmatic enough to bring that in consideration when looking ahead. He

ince the dawn of history, various extraordinary phenomena have been recorded as happening amongst human beings. Witnesses are not wanting in modern times to attest to the fact of such events, even in societies living under the full blaze of modern science. The vast mass of such evidence is unreliable, as coming from ignorant, superstitious, or fraudulent persons. In many instances the so-called miracles are imitations. But what do they imitate? It is not the sign of a candid and scientific mind to throw overboard anything without proper investigation. Surface scientists, unable to explain the various extraordinary mental phenomena, strive to ignore their very existence. They are, therefore, more culpable than those who think that their prayers are answered by a being, or beings, above the clouds, or than those who believe that their petitions will make such beings change the course of the universe. The latter have the excuse of ignorance, or at least of a defective system of education, which has taught them dependence upon such beings, a dependence which has become a part of their degenerate nature. The former have no such excuse. For thousands of years such phenomena have been studied, investigated, and generalised, the whole ground of the religious fac-

It realizes that New Delhi is militarily stronger and more resourceful than it was in 1962. Then the non-aligned status of India was a bone of contention with America. Still it responded to Jawaharlal Nehru’s request for weapons and air umbrella. It is another thing that Beijing announced an unilateral ceasefire after making pulp of India’s military strength and defeating it decisively. President Obama’s visit is a guarantee that India would not be alone if ever such a situation develops again. It can feel secure after his visit. New Delhi tried its best to wean America away from Pakistan. Prime Minister Modi reportedly talked more than once to President Obama, but he could only get support for action against terrorists. It teaches that desires and wants are in man, that the power of supply is also in man; and that wherever and whenever a desire, a want, a prayer has been fulfilled, it was out of this infinite magazine that the supply came, and not from any supernatural being. to urge Islamabad to bring the perpetrators of 26/11 carnage to justice. In Washington’s scheme of things, Pakistan’s support is essential in the war against terrorists. In principle there cannot be any difference on this point. Yet the reality is that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, urging jihad against us, is openly preaching hatred against India. The Pakistan government ran a special train to facilitate travel of his supporters to attend his rally. On top of it all, there is no serious interest in pursuing the 26/11 attack on Mumbai where some 200 people were killed. Judge after judge has been transferred. There are hearings all over again. Pakistan is afraid of the Taliban inside and outside the country in proceeding with the case, much less taking action against the perpetrators.

It is obvious that he does not go beyond a point lest he should embarrass Pakistan. Yet, America is the only country which can force Pakistan deliver. Pakistan denied that Jammat-ud-Dawa has been banned. Only its back account has been frozen. Washington should exert more pressure. I wish President Obama were to use his good offices to arrange a meeting between India and Pakistan. However divergent their viewpoints are, the two countries might find a way to have trade and tourism. Once the two countries meet, they may find other avenues for cooperation. With trust deficit on the one hand, and no contact with each other on the other, the gulf between the two is bound to grow further. President Obama’s offer to finance solar energy production may prod New Delhi to go for this type of power in a big way. Already Rajasthan has some plants. Their expansion or installation of new ones can produce so much power that it can be transmitted across the border. Pakistan is presently short of power. Washington can pursue President Obama’s suggestion and ensure that India share the additional production. There may be other economic avenues which, if followed, can increase India’s earning. His personal interest in such projects will not only ensure their early completion but also impress on New Delhi that the economic sinews are the best ties that can bind India and Pakistan together. power of action in man, but it also brings spiritual decay. The gross can be easily perceived by the senses; not so the subtle. The practice of RajaYoga will lead to the acquisition of the more subtle perceptions. All the orthodox systems of Indian philosophy have one goal in view, the liberation of the soul through perfection. The method is by Yoga. The word Yoga covers an immense ground, but both the Sânkhya and the Vedanta Schools point to Yoga in some form or other. The subject of the present book is that form of Yoga known as Raja-Yoga. The aphorisms of Patanjali are the highest authority on RajaYoga, and form its textbook. The other philosophers, though occasionally differing from Patanjali in some philosophical points, have, as a rule, acceded to his method of practice a decided consent. BEST fare hike is totally unfair in a scenario where fuel prices have crashed drastically and are slated to fall further. Also, it is totally illogical that the new increased fares hold good only for two months with the management hinting further revising fares at a meeting slated for April 1. BEST buses run packed in the city and the losses generated are mostly due to poor management. Today, travelling by auto is cheaper than BEST if three passengers travel. One has to travel in suffocating condition during peak hours in the BEST buses. complaint against Bollywood celebs Sena introduces Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ Mumbai mentioned that the trio along with other performers allegedly passed abusive and offensive remarks against one another and even against the audience. The episode, which was uploaded on YouTube and other websites last week, has gone viral. Apparently, the organisers of the event raised Rs. 40 lakhs as charity with the Tata Institute and Being Human Foundation among others being the recipients. However, most of the audience had taken the digs made by the participants in a lighter vein and were seen having a gala time as seen in the video. In his four-page complaint, Tiwari sought a criminal complaint against Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Ranbir Singh as well as the show organiser, among others. "I have handed over a letter to Sakinaka police demanding a criminal complaint be lodged

against these so-called youth icons Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. The show, which can be seen on YouTube and other websites, was extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture and women, but is also misleading today's youth," said Tiwari. “I sought action against the event organisers and other performers as well, who passed dirty comments with such elan. Police action would be a deterrent to them so that they would not dare to do such acts publicly in future," Tiwari added. Senior Police Inspector from Sakinaka Police station Prasanna More said, "We have received the written complaint. We are inquiring into the matter. Once we reach a conclusion, appropriate action would be initiated, if required, till now it is a complaint in writing, no FIR has been registered."

Also known as the triangle posture, this pose stretches and strengthens your spine and inner thighs, as well as your abdominal and oblique muscles. Inhale and take a step to the left, so that your left foot points to the left. Ensure that your feet are roughly 3-4 feet apart. Exhale, bend your torso to the left (while rotating your chest upwards) and use your left arm to reach out and touch your left foot. Your right arm should be stretched out towards the ceiling. With the first two fingers of your left hand, try to hold either your shin, ankle or the big toe of your left foot. Using these two fingers tug on your left leg, in order to create tension through your body. Hold this position for five breaths. Inhale and raise yourself back to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. Most people aim to place their entire palm on their toes. This can cause your back to droop forward. It is essential that your chest rotates upwards, so it’s okay if you can only reach your shins.

To keep your spine flexible, it must be twisted laterally — which is what this pose does.

Sit with your legs stretched out. Bend your right knee, move your right foot over your left leg and place it next to your left thigh. Your right foot should point forward and should be flat. Bring your left foot near your right hip. The side of your foot should touch the floor. Place your left arm on your right leg and hold your ankle with your hand, so that your right knee is close to your left armpit. Sit straight and slowly twist to your right. While twisting, your tail bone might lift up — make sure that your pelvis is pressing on to the floor to prevent this.

Dear Dr. Mehta, I am a 54 year old man, and have got cataracts in both eyes for which I would like to be operated by you in both eyes on your new CATALYS bladeless laser machine at your hospital. I have a few queries. What kind of lenses would I have to select after the CATALYS laser cataract surgery. A doctor in town had told me a year ago that I should go for the new multifocal lenses, but now I’ve come to know that there are trifocal lenses as well. Can I opt for having the trifocal lenses for my eyes if I do the surgery on your CATALYS machine? — Byram Dear Byram, The CATALYS bladeless laser machine gives you a high level of safety and most important of all, reproducibility. So the cataract is always done perfectly and very safely. To really gain the benefit of the CATALYS bladeless laser technique, a high quality multifocal lens is ideal as it can then give exceptional results. You can go for any type of lens, multifocals or trifocals even if you have astigmatism as the CATALYS can easily correct any astigmatism simultaneously. Since there is no ultrasound used at all (phacoemulsification), the cornea is unaffected and remains very clear, and thus the CATALYS is ideal for people over the age of 65

or 70 where the eye tends to get affected by age.

Dear Dr. Keiki Mehta, When I was young, I remember having got a hit with a rubber ball on my right eye following which my vision was good until about 10 years. I had visited a doctor and he said I may have developed a cataract due to that injury since my other eye was good. I have read several articles and come to know about your new Bladefree Cataract

CATALYS Laser System which you offer. I have a question. Is the entire procedure done by laser and the eye left untouched? How would the new lens be inserted and what happens to the cataract lens. How is this done on the new system? What about taking out the natural lens and inserting the new lens. — Kaizad Mody Dear Kaizad, The CATALYS laser cataract system is blade-free as the laser itself

What it does is that it pulverizes the lens into very fine bits which are then simply sucked out of the eye, but of course, we do need to insert a lens as a CATALYS only removes the cataract, the lens is naturally required. The procedure done with the CATALYS is very safe and you should do it without any delay. Dear Dr Keiki, Congratulations on your new bladeless cataract unit the

CATALYS which I have come to know about. Many of those I know have been operated by you and are so very happy. Doctor, I am 62, retired, and have got cataracts which have not been operated. I also have glaucoma which is sometimes under control and sometimes not. I’m tired of keeping a track of my drops and if possible, would like to be free from all this headache. Can you please guide me as to what should I do and can your new unit help me? All I want to do is see well. It would be a dream come true to be operated by your blessed hands. — Boman Wadia. Dear Boman, Thank you very much for your very kind words. I would suggest, if your cataract has advanced adequately, you could do a combined cataract and glaucoma procedure. Usually, following this procedure you will not be using any drops at all and vision should be adequate. The advantage of utilizing the new CATALYS system is you are sure about the result, that it is safe, that it is virtually harmless to the eye and most important of all, you can be assured that the results will be all that you have hoped for. The only disadvantage, if one could put it to this new system is the slightly higher cost which we feel is more than compensated by the quality of vision you will achieve. Virabhadrasana This pose will help tone your legs and strengthen your calves. It also provides relief from cramps in your calves and thigh muscles and makes your leg and back muscles firm, while toning your abdominal muscles.

Technique

adho Mukha sVanasana This pose is an ideal stressbuster and helps to boost metabolism. It also stimulates blood flow to your head and improves blood circulation throughout your body.

Technique

n Stand with your back arched, your bottom thrust out and your chest leaning forward, with your hands by your side. Exhale and bend forward, placing each palm on the floor beside each foot. n Bend your knees and step back, one foot at a time, so that your feet are around four feet behind your palms. Keep your hands shoulderwidth apart and your feet hip-width apart. n Now, raise your heels, tighten your hip muscles and pull your kneecaps in. Stretch the arches of your legs and bring your heels back down to the floor. n Lower your torso so that your head is between your arms — as shown in the picture. Feel the stretch through your body and continue to lift your hips upward as far as you can. Mistake to avoid: A common mistake that you might make is not distributing your body weight evenly. Press down between your index finger and thumb, so that your weight is equally distributed throughout both your hands.

n Stand on a mat with your back straight. Turn your right foot so that it points to the right and your feet form a 90° angle. n Inhale and turn your torso to the right, with your arms stretched out to your side, so that you end up in the pose depicted in the adjoining photograph. Your chest should be straight throughout. n Bend your right knee, tuck your pelvis in and lift your chest. n Press your right heel and the inside of your left foot into the mat. n Hold the pose for five breaths and repeat on the other side. Mistake to avoid: As is with most people, your tail bone will start to push out once you get into this pose. Ensure that your tail bone moves towards your pelvic bone — in other words, it should be tucked in.

Technique

n Lie on your back. n Bend your knees, resting your feet flat on the ground and the back of your heels touching your hips. n Keep your feet and knees hip-width apart, and grasp your ankles with your hands. n Raise your hips upwards and arch your back. n Raise your chest and navel as high as possible, without moving your feet or shoulders. Make sure that your feet remain flat on the floor. n Hold the pose for as long as you feel comfortable, then slowly lower your body. Mistake to avoid: If you aren’t used to performing this pose, you will notice that your knees start to move outwards when you’ve raised your chest and navel. To correct this, place a few pillows or a block between your thighs and squeeze it — this will also strengthen your inner thighs and your quads.

dhanurasana Known as The Bow, this pose is inspired from an archer stringing a bow. This pose tones your back muscles and promotes the elasticity of your spine, improving posture and vitality. It also helps reduce abdominal fat. n Lie on your stomach, with your head facing the floor. Inhale and bend your knees backwards to bring your feet up in the air. Reach out to your feet and hold your ankles with your hands. Exhale as you do this. n As you inhale, raise your head and chest and simultaneously, and pull your ankles upwards so that your knees and thighs rise off the floor. n Arch your back and look up. Hold this position for three breaths, then exhale and slowly return to the starting position. Mistake to avoid: Ensure that you continue breathing once your back is arched. You need to concentrate on the expansion and contraction of your abdomen in order for this pose to be effective.

If you’ve been invited to a party smack in the midst of your latest attempt at sticking to a healthy diet, then choose these diet-friendly drinks, says Dev Goswami

>> Red wine may seem unhealthy, but it is comparatively a healthier option

O

ne of the reasons that alcohol can prove so detrimental to your health is its calorie content. So, conventional wisdom suggests that if you’re on a diet, it’s best to avoid alcohol — not only does drinking it lead to consumption of excess calories, it can also result in overeating, as you dive into a bag of chips to beat the alcohol-induced hunger. However, a few cheat days never hurt anyone (in fact, they can actually help you stick to your diet), so there’s no need to put a blanket cover on drinks. Here are a few drinks that will allow you to enjoy a party, without completely ruining your diet.

red Wine Red wine, with its mildly sweet taste, may seem like an unlikely contender for a calorie-friendly drink. But, one glass of red wine has merely 100 calories (approximately), which makes it alright to consume in limits. An easy way to enjoy a glass or two (no more!) of red wine, without piling on the calories, is to drink it along with your dinner and think of it as your quota of starch — so avoid bread, pasta and potatoes, and stick to lean proteins and non-starchy vegetables.

chamPagne

RAISE A

TOAST

The next time you’re at a celebratory party, don’t be reluctant to enjoy a glass of bubbly. Not only is champagne low in calories, the foamy head that forms while it’s being poured into a glass, ensures that you drink less than the amount that you think that you’re drinking. Of course, this theory falls flat if you keep going back for seconds.

guinness We usually refrain from mentioning specific brands when we’re writing such articles. However, Guinness beer deserves a special mention. A pint of this beer contains around 125 calories, which is much lower than most other types of beer. Another reason that this beer deserves a mention is because of a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin, which found the presence of certain antioxidants in Guinness beer. The study claims that these antioxidants can help prevent the kind of blood clotting that is known to lead

to heart attacks. So, if beer is your poison and you’re on a diet, get your hands on this beer, which though rare, isn’t impossible to source in Mumbai.

rum/ Whiskey/ Vodka With Water One of the reasons that alcoholic drinks are best avoided is that most of these drinks are consumed with mixers that are loaded with sugar and calories. You can make your drink healthier simply by cutting out the fizzy, sweet beverage that you use as your mixer. Mixing your spirits with water is a fantastic idea — not only will this cut down on the calories you consume, it will also save you from a hangover the next morning. If you absolutely need some sort of fizz in your drinks, pick plain club soda. Also, while choosing your spirits, remember that the lower the alcohol proof is, the lower the calories are. So, a 40 proof spirit is a better choice than a 60 proof option.

martini/ mojito When it comes to picking a cocktail, choose from the two Ms — martini or mojito. The former is essentially a spirit (usually vodka) mixed with vermouth and olives and so, it is one of the healthiest alcoholic drinks. A glass of mojito, on the other hand, has the same amount of calories as a glass of red wine. It does contain a little sugar, but it won’t derail your diet and so, you can pick this drink the next time you’re at a party.

High fructose corn syrup is slowly gaining popularity. Yamini Walia finds out whether this sweet additive is actually beneficial for your health

What is it?

High-fructose corn syrup is a corn-based sweetener, which is widely used in processed food and beverages such as biscuits, cookies, energy bars, aerated drinks, energy or fruit drinks, muesli and other cereals. It’s essentially an artificial sweetener, and its consumption can affect your health more than plain sugar.

hoW harmful is it?

Even though corn syrup is found in most of food items that we consume today, it isn’t safe at all. Saima Sheikh, nutritionist at

Anytime Fitness Gym, tells us, “Calories from high fructose corn syrup or any added sugar offer no nutritional value. This is more harmful than plain sugar because the syrup is a type of hidden sugar, which leads to unhealthy weight, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.” However, that doesn’t mean that plain sugar is any good either. Karishma Chawla, a nutritionist, explains, “Sugar in any form is harmful. Similarly, too much high fructose corn syrup (extracted from maize), just like table sugar (extracted from cane), can lead to obesity, cardiovascular problems, insulin

resistance, kidney diseases, joint pain and arthritis.

Precautions

It is always a good idea to cut down on artificial sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, and make healthier choices by remembering the following points, which Saima shares with us. n Avoid sugary drinks, desserts and snacks. n Read labels and ingredient lists properly to find out about an item’s sugar content. n Limit hidden sources of added sugars as far as possible.

1 Exercise right A proper exercise routine is essential when you’re pregnant. Performing moderate exercises such as walking, cycling or weight training for 30 minutes every day will be extremely rewarding. Healthy weight It’s much easier to conceive if you maintain a healthy weight. Women with higher body mass index (BMI) are more likely to suffer from pregnancy or delivery — related complications, while women who have a lower BMI are more likely to deliver underweight babies.

If you’re pregnant, Yamini Walia has some tips to help you stay healthy during your pregnancy

Healthy food Eating junk food is a strict no-no when you’re pregnant. During this time, it’s important to make healthy food choices to stock up on nutrients. So, eat more fruits and vegetables, as well as calcium and protein-rich foods.

Stay mentally strong Your mental state needs to be stable when you’re pregnant. Women who suffer from depression are twice as likely to have problems with fertility when compared with women who don’t. Consult a psychiatrist if you notice even minor signs of depression. Reduce your caffeine intake Avoid consuming too much caffeine when you’re pregnant. According to research, too much caffeine can increase your risk of a miscarriage. Limit your daily consumption to one cup of tea or coffee every day.

unDer pressure! Blood pressure issues are extremely common, but sadly, not only do we see them as trivial issues, we’re often not even well-informed about the causes, symptoms and implications of suffering from high (or low) blood pressure. Dev Goswami recommends reading on to find out if you know enough

H

ow many times a day does your heart skip a beat? How many times do you feel it pumping blood faster, aching because you’re hurt or upset, or jumping for joy when you’re happy? Considering the amount of attention that we give this organ on a daily basis, you can’t really blame anyone for scrutinizing it the most, when it comes to cardiovascular health as well! While your heart definitely is one of the most important organs in your body, blood pressure (which is closely connected to your cardiovascular health) is equally important. So, if you want to ensure that you’re at the top of your game when it comes to health and fitness, it’s essential to know enough about maintaining healthy blood pressure. Answer the following questions to find out whether you are aware of potential blood pressure issues and refer to our box to learn more.

Know your fish If you love seafood, you need to keep track of the fish that you eat when you’re pregnant. Even though fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein and vitamin D, it contains mercury, which can be harmful when you’re pregnant. So, limit your consumption of seafood.

Mostly As We’ve all experienced queasiness after running to the internet to find solutions to minor illnesses, only to come across an article about lung cancer. To a certain extent, being aware is a good thing and early diagnose of diseases is an advantage. However, if you have made a visit to your doctor who, after conducting several tests, has assured you that you are perfectly healthy, we suggest taking his/ her word for it. It is crucial to be aware of what is going on with your body, but if you find that you have an unhealthy obsession with reading about illnesses and diseases and then diagnosing yourself with every second disease that you come across, you may want to get this obsession checked as this is a symptom of a hypochondriac. Mostly Bs You are perfectly fine — need we say more? You know better than to obsess over the headache that you’ve been experiencing since morning or the flu caused by a change in weather. However, if any of these symptoms persist, don’t hesitate to get them checked. Remember that it is always good to get yourself checked when you’re feeling under the weather, even if you think it is a simple cough. As long as you don’t go bananas and assume you have lung cancer, you’re good to go.

a. True. b. False. 4. For those who are over 40-years-old: I get yearly full-body check-ups, so there is no need for me to check my blood pressure levels at home. a. True. b. False. 5. Feeling light-headed or dizzy when I stand up after sitting down for prolonged periods (this suggests low blood pressure) is nothing to worry about. a. True. b. False. 6. If you suffer from blood pressure, you don’t need to take medication that your doctor has prescribed when you’re feeling fine. a. True. b. False. 7. If you discover that you suffer from high/ low blood pressure, you should just hit the gym like a maniac in order to bring it under control. a. True. b. False. 8. In a blood pressure reading, it is important that both readings are under the normal limit. a. True. b. False.

UndERStAnding pRESSURE Blood pressure is often referred to by the medical fraternity as the ‘silent killer,’ because of the paucity of symptoms that high or low blood pressure presents. You may suffer from high or low blood pressure without even realising it, and in the long run, this can prove to be fatal. So, it’s important to be aware of the basics of blood pressure. Tally the following points with your answers to learn more about blood pressure:

>> Consult your doctor to keep a tab on your blood pressure levels

1. Answer: B. False.

Blood pressure issues are not necessarily fatal, but heart attacks and strokes can be, right? Both these conditions can be caused by high blood pressure, and so, not taking high or low blood pressure seriously will be a mistake.

7. Answer: B. False.

2. Answer: B. False.

The reason for this belief is that sodium, a common ingredient in table salt, is among the several factors that can cause high blood pressure. But, eliminating just table salt won’t do much — you also need to avoid certain types of cheese that are high in sodium and read labels on packaged food, as salt is used as a preservative in several items. Also, remember that sodium is an important mineral that your body requires for its health. Furthermore, a few studies suggest that there is no reason for a healthy person to completely cut out table salt, as this will have no effect on either increasing or lowering the risk of suffering from high blood pressure. So, you should take the connection between salt and blood pressure with a pinch of salt.

3. Answer: A. True.

There are no two ways about this — red wine in moderation can improve your heart health, but enough studies have shown that regularly drinking alcohol increases your blood pressure and puts you at risk of suffering from a stroke or heart failure.

6. Answer: B. False.

As we explained earlier, high or low blood pressure doesn’t present itself with many symptoms. So, focussing only on how you feel can mislead you into believing that your blood pressure levels are normal, when in fact, they are probably not. The only person who can tell you this is your doctor. If you don’t want to consume too much medication, ask him to wean you off by suggesting lifestyle changes that can help you lower your blood pressure. However, never stop taking medication mid-course as it can have severe consequences.

4. Answer: B. False.

Once you cross the age of 40, it is prudent to invest in a blood pressure monitor (your doctor can recommend a good one) because blood pressure issues don’t come with many symptoms. So, it is possible that you won’t discover that you’re afflicted by high blood pressure simply because it isn’t time for your yearly checkup.

5. Answer: A. True.

If you’ve been sitting for too long, standing up will naturally result in low blood pressure, which is why you feel dizzy and light-headed. This sort of low blood pressure is nothing to worry about. However, if you constantly suffer from headaches and feel dizzy every time you get up, you should visit your doctor.

Exercise is a great way to lower blood pressure. However, working out without any regard for how your activities affect your body can actually harm you. If you smoke, are over 40years-old, are obese, suffer from a chronic health condition or have had a heart attack, you need an exercise routine that has been vetted by your doctor. Also, remember that the exercises you need are not those that are usually performed in gyms (anaerobic). You need aerobic activities such as swimming or cycling, which will actually benefit your cardiovascular health.

8. Answer: B. False.

Medical opinion suggests that your body has the ability to handle high systolic pressure (the top number) better than high diastolic pressure (the bottom number). However, this shouldn’t worry you, because understanding the nuances of your blood pressure is best left in the hands of your doctor. Generally speaking, if either of your numbers is above normal, it’s a cause for concern. What will differ, based on what number is higher, is not whether you need to get treated, but what kind of medication you require — which is something that your doctor is in the best position to figure out.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2015 >> Beto Perez gave birth to the concept of Zumba Fitness

Z

umba’s popularity has taken the world by storm, and its effectiveness is unquestionable. This dance-based fitness programme provides a much-needed break from the monotony of your gym routine and is physically as well as mentally beneficial. The programme was created by Beto Perez, who recently visited India to conduct a Zumba masterclass, that was hosted by our very own Zumba Education Specialist (ZES), Sucheta Pal. We spoke to him before the event, which took place this Sunday at The Lalit, and found out what he has to say about Zumba and fitness. n Zumba seems like the perfect exercise right now, but there was a time when it didn’t even exist. How did it come about? Was it an epiphany of sorts, where you thought, ‘you know what, let me combine dance with exercise!’ I have always been passionate about dancing — as a child, I loved watching the musical, Grease. Zumba came about when I taught my very first class at the age of 16, in my hometown Cali, in Colombia. I showed up to the class (at this time it was just a regular aerobics class), but it didn’t have the music that is typically used in an aerobics class. I had to improvise by using personal favourites that I had on tape — traditional Latin salsa and Merengue. This was the moment when the Zumba fitness party was born. The entire class enjoyed the music; they were smiling ear-to-ear and dancing, so I continued teaching it the same way and the class kept growing. Once I brought this concept to the US and met my business partners, the success was reconfirmed and Zumba Fitness was trademarked in 2001. Today, Zumba draws out the passion that lives deep within everyone. It’s a feeling that moves you not only in a physical sense, but emotionally as well, telling you to break free and bust a move. It’s a feeling that stays with you long after a Zumba class is over. n Apart from the obvious physical benefits, what are the other takeaways from Zumba? Its emotional aspects! Zumba connects with your mind, body and soul, and gives

ExErcisE in disguisE Beto Perez, the creator of Zumba, was in Mumbai recently, to conduct India’s biggest Zumba masterclass. Dev Goswami spoke to him about the dance fitness programme and more

you a platform to meet new friends and be part of something bigger. We hear several stories about weight loss, but even more about Zumba helping people to fight depression and get through chemotherapy, as well as to gain confidence and courage to end a bad relationship or ask for that raise at work. The stories are endless! n Almost every photograph of a Zumba class shows an exhilarated group of people having a whole lot of fun. Can you give our readers an insight into what a Zumba class is actually like? It’s like going to a concert and dancing to your favourite music, except that you’re exercising and you don’t even realise it! We call it exercise in disguise. Next time you go to a nightclub, think of Zumba, because it’s basically the same experience — dancing and smiling with your friends to your favourite songs.

>> Sucheta Pal and Beto recently organised a Zumba masterclass in Mumbai

n This is your first trip to India. What are you looking forward to the most? I can’t wait to meet the new Zumba instructors in the community, as well as introduce some people to Zumba for the first time. It’s always fun to visit new cultures and see how Zumba is the thread that binds everyone together, no matter

where you’re from. I am also looking forward to the food! n From a lean, supple body to a muscular body with six-packs, the definition of fitness changes almost every year. How do you define fitness? Fitness is something that you should want to do, and not something that you have to do. It means something different to everyone, but it’s not about staring at yourself in the mirror when you’re lifting weights or barely being able to walk the next day. As long as you’re performing a workout that motivates you and makes you feel good, that’s what fitness is. n We’re seeing the rise of non-conventional workouts that focus as much on having fun as they do on fitness. Do you think that the world is slowly moving to workouts such as Zumba? People are already moving in that direction. We know that group fitness classes have been very popular. In fact, we’ve seen a huge jump in the number of people logging in group exercises on their wearable technology. For instance, the average Jawbone user, who logs a Zumba class, averages almost 8,000 steps per class! Most programs target 10,000 steps a day, and that’s 80% of your goal in just one hour of a Zumba class. When people see such results from their classes while they are actually enjoying the workout, we’ll definitely continue to see a rise in popularity toward workouts such as Zumba. n If you had one line to convince our readers about why they should pick Zumba, what would you say? “Fitness without the sacrifice.”

Quick-fire n A celebrity whom you admire for his/ her fitness: Shakira n A song (or more!) that your Zumba session is incomplete without: Descarga de la luz by Orquesta de la Luz; Apretaito al Pick up by Mr Black; Cali Pachanguero by Grupo Niche n One food item that you would never touch: Pork n One unhealthy food item that you cannot get enough of: Ice-cream! n An exercise that you would never perform or an equipment that you would never use: The shake weight! (Editor’s note: This is a modified dumbbell in which the weights are attached to the grip through a spring, causing the weights to vibrate and oscillate during exercise, supposedly to increase its effects.) n A misconception about fitness that you’d like to change: That fitness can’t be fun — no pain no gain. We say, all gain, no pain!

The science of breakups Afternoon Despatch & Courier

Dealing with a breakup can be extremely hard. But, did you know that apart from affecting your mental state, it also ignites certain physical reactions? Yamini Walia & Sara Shah tell you more about this full-body blow

Y

ou’ve just been through a terrible breakup, and you’re not in a good place, emotionally or mentally. However, have you ever wondered how your sad state of mind affects you physically? While mental anguish is an obvious, natural reaction to a breakup, there are several other changes taking place inside your body. From your brain, hormones, stomach and immune system, to your skin and hair, a breakup affects several body parts. Read on to find out about your body’s physiological reaction to a breakup.

glands into a tizzy. Because of the stress of a breakup, your adrenal glands begin to produce the hormones cortisol and adrenaline in larger amounts, both of which significantly heightens your stress response. While these hormones will go back to a normal level once you have simmered down, your blood pressure will shoot up — depending on the severity of the breakup and the stress that follows.

BUSTed Brain A breakup can significantly impact your brain as well. Even a momentary glance at a picture of the two of you together or seeing your partner again can cause blood to rush to the ventral tegmental area, which is the pleasure centre of your brain. The prefrontal cortext (the command centre of your brain) lights up, resulting in cravings — especially for your ex-partner, comfort and security. And, if you’re wondering why you’ve been aching all over instead of just around your heart, it is because of an influx of blood into your secondary somatosensory cortex and the dorsal posterior insula — both of which are parts of your brain that are involved in producing physical pain.

TerriBle TUMMy

A heart break can make your skin sad, sallow and dull. And, since you are bound to encounter a lot of stress after a breakup, it will also increase production of the stress hormone, cortisol. This hormone causes oil to build up underneath your skin, which clogs your pores and results in acne.

That large tub of double-chocolate ice-cream may be the only thing that your body craves during a breakup — apart from your ex, of course. However, lay off the ice-cream, because after a breakup, your stressed nervous system slows down your digestive system. This results in an upset tummy, as well as loss of appetite.

Harrowed Hair

irriTaTed iMMUne SySTeM

If you’re emotionally shattered, your hair follicles can enter a state called telogen effluvium, which is basically a resting phase. During this state, your hair stops growing and after a while, it will start falling out.

As if the pain of a breakup isn’t enough, you’re down with the flu as well. Perfect timing, right? Well, it’s not as much of a coincidence as you think. This happens because the stress of rejection agitates your body’s immune system, which in turn results in cell-damaging inflammation. This tires your immune system and before you know it, you’ll be down with the flu. Hang in there and stay strong, because just like your heartache, it won’t last forever.

ontracting a sexually transmitted disease through a sexual encounter is a scary thought. However, what’s scarier is that you don’t even need to engage in sexual intercourse to contract one. While most STDs are contracted by the exchange of bodily fluids, there are several other ways you can end up suffering from one, even if you’re sexually inactive. Read on to find out more.

This condition is more likely to affect sexually active adults. The symptoms are quite gory, but (surprisingly), are not painful, and include lumps on your genitals that multiply and cause panic. Apart from sexual contact, the condition is spread through sports such as wrestling, as well as through tanning beds, chairs in waxing parlous and by sharing clothes with an infected person. This virus usually subsides on its own, but can be scraped off as well (only by a doctor) and usually doesn’t come back.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Trichomoniasis

C

HPV is not an actual disease, but is defined as a sexually transmitted infection, and is more common than you think. Several studies have shown that almost half of the sexually active population is likely to contract this infection at some point in their lives. It doesn’t display any definitive symptoms and mostly goes away on its own, so you may not even realise that you suffer from it. But, this is only true for low-risk HPV. When it comes to high-risk HPV, you may notice symptoms such as bumps and warts that are flat or raised, flesh-coloured and look like a cauliflower. Something as innocent as shaking hands with infected people who haven’t washed their hands properly after visiting the restroom, can lead to you contracting the infection. Another reason for you to be wary is that there is no cure for HPV, though there are several treatments for its symptoms.

This isn’t a well-known disease, but it is one of the most common and (thankfully) easily curable diseases, responding well to antibiotics. You can contract this simply by touching an inanimate object such as a dirty towel or a used sex toy. Symptoms include irritation in your genitals and foul-smelling discharge.

Herpes

There are essentially two types of Herpes — HSV-1 and HSV-2, which are oral and genital respectively. But, studies have shown that both types can occur almost anywhere on the body and the symptoms include cold sores or genital sores. Avoid sharing clothes, razors and utensils with an infected person, because there is no known cure for this virus although the symptoms subside on their own and can also be eased with medication.

dear Barbara, Over the past few days, I’ve noticed a swelling on one of my fingers, just below my nail. It has come up on just one finger, and is tender to touch. The affected area has become reddish in colour and is painful when I apply pressure to it. It doesn’t really affect my daily life, but I’m worried about whether I’m ignoring something serious. Do I need to visit a doctor? — sujata sharma, malad dear sujata, What you’ve described sounds like a condition known as paronychia. It’s basically a skin infection that is caused due to bacteria or fungi. Unless the swelling is very large, it is not something to worry about, and you can’t treat it by soaking your fingers in warm water and using an antifungal cream to clear the infection. However, if you’re diabetic, you should visit your doctor, as this may be an indication of an aggravating condition. Also, remember to keep your hands and feet dry and clean, avoid biting your nails or picking at the skin around your nails and wear gloves if your hands are frequently exposed to harsh chemicals.

dear Barbara, I’ve recently started swimming in order to stay fit. I love this form of exercise and want to continue with it. However, I think that the frequent trips to the pool are damaging my hair. It has become dry and frazzled and I am worried that in the long run, I’ll end up causing some serious damage. Is there anything I can do? I really don’t want to give up swimming! — sagar varma, goregaon dear sagar, The chorine that is used to disinfect the water in swimming pools is the reason for your dry hair. What you need to do is limit its exposure to the water by wearing a swimming cap. Also remember to shower before you step into the pool — your hair will absorb the clean water and so, will be less affected by the chorine water in the pool. Another tip to follow is to shampoo your hair after you step out of the pool — however, make sure that you use an extremely mild shampoo to prevent dry hair. Follow up with a conditioner in order to keep your hair moisturised. We recommend using a leave-in conditioner for a hassle-free experience.

When it comes to home remedies for healthy hair, coconut oil is one of the most commonly used ingredients. But, is it really effective? Dev Goswami & Yamini Walia speak to a couple of experts to find out

C

oconut oil may not be a remedy that is as common as a spoonful of haldi (turmeric) and water to beat a cough, but it is a favoured haircare item in several homes. Most of us will recall being forced to head to school with our hair plastered with coconut oil. And as Dr. Apratim Goel, a cosmetic dermatologist & laser surgeon at Cutis Skin Studio, tells us, coconut oil has been used since ancient times, especially in the coastal regions of India, Indonesia, Thailand and the Caribbean islands. In fact, a few brands have even managed to achieve mega success based on just one product — coconut oil. So, it has to be extremely healthy, right? Not quite. Dr. Apratim explains, “Coconut oil on its own does not have many benefits apart from conditioning your hair and treating a dry scalp. What makes it popular is its low cost and easy availability.” So, should you include this hair and skincare product in your beauty regime? Read on to find out.

>> Coconut oil, mixed with lavender oil, will lower stress and induce sleep

The BenefiTs Coconut oil may not be an item that you need to include in your haircare routine, but it does have a few benefits. Here we list out a few. n Use as a conditioner: Warm coconut oil works as a very good conditioner for your hair. In fact, most conditioners contain coconut oil extracts, which give your hair a soft, glossy appearance. Dr. Apratim explains, “You can use a few drops of coconut oil to massage your scalp and then apply the rest gently to your hair strands.” This will condition and moisturise your hair. n Prevent hairfall: If you suffer from excessive hairfall, then coconut oil can work wonders. It helps to treat brittle hair that doesn’t break from the roots, but from the hair shaft. Mixing coconut oil with mustard oil or amla (gooseberry) juice and applying the mixture to your hair is an effective home remedy, which will help prevent hairfall that is caused by breakage. n Get rid of lice: Lice is a common hair problem amongst children and sometimes, for adults as well. To protect your hair from lice, coat wet hair with coconut oil and comb it using a fine-toothed comb — this is an easy way to remove lice without having to pull or tug at your hair, which can cause your hair to break. n Relieve stress: An oil massage is a great stress buster. And, using coconut oil for your massage is a good idea. Dr. Apratim explains, “Mixing lavender oil or lavender extracts with coconut oil and then massaging your scalp before you go to bed is a great way to fight stress. It also induces a good night’s sleep.”

ways To use iT Applying coconut oil to your hair and scalp is not the only way to use this product. Dr. Bharti Magoo, aesthetic &

The disadvanTages Coconut oil does have a few disadvantages. So, if you plan on adding it to your beauty routine, keep the following points in mind.

anti-ageing physician at Golden Touch Clinic, tells us about a few innovative ways that you can use this oil.

hair

n Juice a carrot (drink it for its benefits or

use it for cooking), and mix the grated remains with coconut oil. Apply the mixture on to your scalp and let it sit for around 30 minutes. Rinse it with water in order to add a healthy shine to your hair. n Apply a mixture of coconut oil, almond meal and black sesame seeds to your hair in order to avoid premature grey hair. n Applying a mixture of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar to your hair helps to combat itching and dandruff.

The risk of chemically refined, bleached and deodorised coconut oil is quite high. Such oils do not retain much of the oil’s healing properties. Dr. Bharti recommends that you use cold pressed or virgin oils, or pick mechanically hand pressed oils, as they retain their medicinal properties and are a healthier option.

Too oily

It is important to apply the right amount of oil to your hair. If you douse your hair in coconut oil, not only will the treatment prove ineffective, you will also end up with greasy, oily hair.

dandruff or skin irritation

Coconut oil can induce dandruff because your oily hair will attract dust. This doesn’t mean that you need to avoid using it completely — this effect is usually seen when you don’t wash your hair properly after oiling your hair.

skin

n Mix coconut oil with sandalwood oil,

add a few leaves of saffron, haldi (turmeric) and tulsi (Holy basil) and then massage it on to your skin every day for one week — this will add a healthy glow to your face and body. n Applying a mixture of coconut oil, mashed avocado and pomegranate to your skin will help diminish stretch marks and scars. n Mix coconut oil with neem, tulsi and khus-khus. This mixture can help to reduce the appearance of the physical, skin-based symptoms of conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis.

NEWS IN BRIEF

N Jaitley asks bureaucrats to give news alongwith politicians

New Delhi: Highlighting that media scape has undergone changes, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley encouraged bureaucrats to disseminate news with "restraint" and without "propaganda" while suggesting that politicians should take a lead in this endeavour. Addressing a workshop for bureaucrats on communication here, he said the camera has transformed news and media organisations have even begun setting the agenda to which the other institutions were only responding.

Govt’s big hiring drive to recruit over 62,000 constables

New Delhi: In one of its biggest recruitment drives, government has announced hiring of over 62,000 young men and women as constables in central paramilitary and police organisations this year. The candidates will be hired by central forces like CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB, CISF, NIA and SSF as the Union Home Ministry launched the mega-drive of hiring workforce for these security organisations in the last about five years. Apart from reservation for SC/ST and OBC candidates, relaxation of applicable age has been made for the children and dependents of the victims of 2002 Gujarat riots and 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Indian firm says it has developed four advanced radar systems

New Delhi: An Indian company claimed to have indigenously developed four advanced dual-use radar systems capable of 3D bird detection and deterrence, besides UAV tracker and foliage penetration, a first for the domestic defence industry. The radars would have a global launch in the upcoming Aero India air show in Bengaluru. "OIS Advanced Technology has the IP rights for these four radars. We are launching these advanced radar systems for global markets, in essence taking Indian intellectual property and manufactured product to advance our expanded vision of taking Make in India to the world," Sanjay Bhandari, Founder- Chairman and Managing Director of the firm said here. The company said its 3D Bird Detection, Tracking and Monitoring and Deterrence Radar System is a global first.

ew Delhi: Exuding confidence that his party will come to power in Delhi, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal today said the BJP has pressed the "panic button" and was now resorting to "politics of poison" to avoid a defeat. Five days ahead of the voting to the 70-member Delhi assembly, Kejriwal predicted that Congress will not win even a single seat which will obviate the need for him to take that party's support as he had done in 2013 to form his short-lived 49-day government. The significance of election in Delhi went far beyond its borders and that was why the BJP was fielding its "big guns" for the campaigning, the former Delhi Chief Minister told PTI in an interview. "They have pressed the panic button and that is why you see all these big guns campaigning for the party," he said and accused them of resorting to personal attacks against him, his family and the community he belongs to. "This shows their (BJP's) desperation and frustration," he said. Referring to an attack on a South

Arvind Kejriwal speaks during his election campaign in New Delhi. Delhi church this morning, he said this was in keeping with the pattern adopted by BJP in Uttar Pradesh where the electorate was polarised at the time of last year's Lok Sabha elections and by-polls. "This is what is the politics of BJP. They will try to polarise the society... We do politics of love and affection

and they (BJP) do politics of poison," he said. Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's argument that it would be good to have a BJP government in Delhi which will work in tandem with BJP-led government at the Centre, he said he would work with Modi in a "constructive" spirit

if his party comes to power. On his rival chief ministerial candidate BJP's Kiran Bedi, with whom he worked closely during Anna Hazare's anti-graft agitation, Kejriwal said if she becomes Chief Minister, she will be like Manmohan Singh in the Congress party without a voice. He also said that the former IPS officer was fit for police and not for Chief Minister's post.Kejriwal said he was sorry for Bedi as she has been "gagged" by the BJP. Emphasising that it was "lives of Delhiites" who were facing corruption, high prices and issues of security which were at stake in this election, the 46-year-old bureaucrat-turned politician assured that like previous time, his party will reduce power tariff by half and come down hard on bribery. Asked whether he will again resort to dharna if he becomes Chief Minister, Kejriwal said "If need be I will do it again." "Depending on the requirement of the situation, I will do anything - discussion, debate or struggle," he said.

Prachi stokes fresh controversy BJP slams AAP for ‘twisting’ advertisement's tone, moves EC with communal rants B

adaun (UP): VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi has stoked fresh controversy by making inflammatory remarks on the issue of 'love jihad' and defending her statement that Hindu women should have four children. "They are trapping our daughters through 'love jihad'. These people who give birth to 35-40.... Are

Sadhvi Prachi spreading love jihad..... They are trying to make Hindustan into Darul Islam. When I made the remarks, it was as if the country was hit by a quake. The media said you have sparked an uproar with your remarks on four children. I said I have only advocated four children for Hindus not 40.... And it is important because the country needs it," the saffron clad leader said at a function

organised here by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) which "felicitated" Hindus who have more than four children. Prachi had contested the 2012 Assembly elections on BJP ticket from Purkazi constituency in UP. She was among persons accused of inciting riots through their provocative speeches in Muzaffarnagar in 2013 and was later granted bail. The latest hate speech came despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warning to party leaders to restrain from making controversial comments which can overshadow his government's agenda of development and economic reforms. The BJP was quick to distance itself from Prachi's remarks, saying the party does not agree with such views and is not interested in discussing any such issue. "The BJP does not agree with any such comment. We do not think that the comments are correct. BJP does not want to discuss any issue other than good governance and even the people are not ready to accept any such discussion. Under such circumstances, there is no significance of such remarks," said chief of BJP's Uttar Pradesh unit Laxmikant Bajpai.

N

ew Delhi: The BJP filed a complaint against AAP with the Election Commission alleging that the party has violated the model code of conduct by trying to give "casteist and religious tone" to a "political statement" made by it in an advertisement. "We have highlighted to EC about the unfortunate incident of use of caste in the election process (by AAP) which is in violation to the code of conduct," Union Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters after meeting the EC officials here. "An advertisement by the BJP which alluded to the anarchist attitude, mindset and behaviour of the AAP has sought to be twisted into religious and castiest overtone, which is deplorable and blown out of context. We have appealed to the EC to take action against this kind of deplorable behaviour," he said. Earlier in the day, Arvind Kejriwal had accused BJP of attacking his community in its advertisement, which targetted the AAP chief for allegedly threatening to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations last year while complaining over not getting an invite this year.

Officials said over two dozen EC nominated observers, including those from the Income Tax, Service Tax, Police and Excise departments, were directed to step up their vigil across all the 70 Assembly constituencies and their adjoining areas as the countdown to the polling day has begun.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:

On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below its 5 day moving average which is declining. This is negative. But, the index is still above its 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the three averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters continue to remain positively trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 8657 point’s level.

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari yesterday urged captains of Indian industry to embrace the concept of ‘growth with equity’ as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility motto. “Empirical evidence shows that growth without equity is not sustainable in the long run. On the other hand, desired levels of equity or inclusion cannot be attained without rapid and sustained growth. Hence the solution is not in ‘either-or’ but in ‘both’” he said. Ansari while addressing a Financial Conclave organized by the Indian Merchants’ Chamber in Mumbai said businesses promote growth directly by increasing production and output and they help in inclusion by generating productive employment and creating wealth. Some estimates indicate that CSR commitments from companies can amount to as much as Rs. 20,000 crores. Ansari said there was greater potential for CSR efforts from the business community. “The answer however does not lie in enacting new laws to make CSR mandatory for all. It has a greater chance of success through voluntary commitments by all able enterprises, in private or public sector. This would be a win-win proposition for the businesses and the society in which they exist and flourish” he said.

MNCs May Have To Disclose Details Of HQ Ops To I-T Dept

Multinational companies operating in India will soon have to disclose details of their operations at the country of residence and their revenue income to the Income Tax authorities. The Budget for 2015-16 may contain provisions relating to the Global Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) rules, which are aimed at collecting a fair share of taxes from multinationals operating in different tax jurisdictions, a source said. "Some provisions related to BEPS are likely to be included in the Budget. These may include the MNCs providing their details of operations at their headquarters or the country from where they are operating their business in India," the source added. The move would help in assessment of future tax liability of subsidiaries of MNCs in India as the details would help bring in clarity in transfer pricing.

Sharp Jump In FY13-14 Some Expect A Rate Cut, Others Don’t GDP Post Rebasing Exercise Monetary Policy Review today

By Deepak Sahijwala

T

he RBI is to announce the Sixth Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Review today. This would be against a backdrop of a 25 bps rate cut invoked on 15, January 2015. The reduction in interest rates earlier this month is based on the premise that the inflation number has come down and would remain range bound in the next few months. It may be recollected that the RBI had targeted a CPI inflation target of 8% for January 2015 and 6% for January 2016. While the inflation number has increased in December relative to November, it is within these broad targets. So the question is: given the present market conditions and as more regional central banks loosen reins, can another rate cut be expected? Since the unscheduled rate cut in mid-Jan, the next question for the RBI is not ‘if’ but ‘when’ further cuts will be delivered. As a base case, we do not expect a rate cut at today’s RBI meeting, but given benign market conditions and as more regional central banks loosen reins, the risks of a follow-up rate cut in Feb cannot be dismissed completely. We look for another 50bps cuts by the Jun quarter says DBS Bank, India. Jayant Manglik, President-retail distribution, Religare Securities is of

the opinion that "Though majority of participants are expecting unchanged stance after an off-policy rate cut in January but they would widely keep an eye on the central bank’s guidance regarding the quantum of rate cuts during the course of 2015 .Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, Director & CEO, WealthRays Securities says “RBI policy was eyed by market participants keeping rate sensitive under pressure yesterday. The tone of RBI governor and views on inflation and further rate cuts will be watched out for. CARE Ratings is of the view that since there has been no new development in the economy between the earlier rate cut announced and the policy date, there is no expectation of a rate cut this time. However, we do not rule a further cut of 25 bps in case the RBI has in mind lowering the rates substantially by 50 bps in Q4-FY15, with the January rate cut being the first tranche. RBI has been targeting inflation for conduct of monetary policy and as can be seen, both the indices have been moving downwards. While the January number could move upwards given that the high base effect has become weak, the CPI inflation rate would continue to be in the 5-5.5% range to provide comfort that inflation would rein low. Global commodity prices con-

tinue to remain low especially crude oil which gives comfort that inflation will be range bound in the downward direction. A concern however is still on the food side as the rabi sowing data indicates that the area under cultivation up to 23rd January was 6% lower at the aggregate level with lower levels across wheat, coarse cereals, pulses and oil seeds. This factor will be looked at closely by the RBI to gauge the potential impact on future inflation. Based on all these factors which normally influence the central bank when taking a decision, it does appear that while the route ahead will be further cuts in the interest rate, there may not be a pressing need to do so again today. The Union Budget is to be announced on the 28th and the thrust of the same as well as the borrowing programme and the RBI’s own conjectures of movements in deposits and credit in FY16 would have a bearing on the phasing of rate cuts process. However, Care believes that “ if the RBI does cut rates by another 25 bps, it can be surmised that it was the initial plan to cut rates by 50 bps in two tranches. It may be pointed out that while some banks have lowered their deposit rates, only few have cut lending rates as yet. The market believes that these cuts will be invoked in March.

However, the upward revision of growth for 2013-14 need not necessarily imply an upside to growth estimates in the current fiscal By A Business Reporter

T

he Indian Statistics agency released the re-based and revised GDP growth numbers last Friday. The Key changes included: base year was revised up to 2011-12 from 2004-05; this pushed up FY12/13 (year ending Mar13) growth to 5.1% from 4.5% earlier; more notably, FY13/14 growth was revised up sharply to 6.9% from 4.7% previous; here on, GDP at market prices will be used as the main gauge for growth (instead of factor prices), along with the Gross Value added (GVA) at basic prices; and current account and fiscal ratios are unaffected with the nominal GDP largely unchanged. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released the new series of national accounts for fiscal years 2012 to 2014. The new series has revised upwards fiscal 2014 real GDP growth to 6.9%, compared to 5.0% as per the old series, indicating a sharper pick-up in growth than that suggested by the old series. GDP at factor cost will, henceforth, be replaced by gross value added (GVA) at basic prices, which is the practice in OECD countries. This will facilitate international comparability of data. CSO in its press release notes “As is the practice internationally, industry-wise estimates will be presented as Gross Value Added (GVA) at basic prices, while GDP at market prices will henceforth be referred to as GDP. So there will be only one estimate of GDP.

However Crisil Research believes that “the upward revision of growth for 2013-14 need not necessarily imply an upside to growth estimates in the current fiscal. We will revisit our GDP growth outlook (at 5.5% and 6.3% for 2014-15 and 2015-16 respectively) once CSO releases Q3 estimates for 2014-15 on February 9. At face value, these revisions bring India’s growth calculations on-par with global practices, as prices are captured at the consumer level rather than ex-factory costs. Other key changes included expansion in the basket to incorporate previously under-represented and informal sectors. Says DBS Bank, India the “Implications of this revised set of data on other economic aspects is however unclear. With last year’s growth revised up to 6.9%, the economy seems to have fared much better than previously thought and higher than potential growth at ~6%. The slack in the economy is not as significant, raising doubts on the headroom for further monetary easing. But on the other hand, this strong growth pace does not square with the weak industrial production data, core industries index and other lead indicators for economic activity. More details will be forthcoming alongside the Oct-Dec14 GDP (3Q FY14/15) release on 9 Feb. Separately, Apr-Dec fiscal deficit overshot the annual deficit target as revenues continue to fall short of budgeted pace. Nonetheless, the FY14/15 deficit target at -4.1% of GDP is likely to be met. Recent increases in excise duties, savings from diesel deregulation, seasonal boost to revenues and likelihood of further expenditure cuts will help to meet the 4.1% of GDP target. A late push to revive divestment proceeds is underway.

Saxophonist Scarff impressess in his Hindustani performance I

t is indeed rare to find a saxophonist playing Hindustani music. In southern India, we have Kadri Gopal who plays Carnatic music on the saxophone. However, Phil Scarff, an American Jazz artiste has ventured into an area where Indians have so far not dared to enter. He leads an acclaimed Jazz ensemble 'Natraj' and has trained in Hindustani raga music under instrumentalists like Khaladkar and vocalists like Deosthali from Poona. He was featured in a concert at Shivaji Park Nagarik Sangh last week.

Phil began with the raga 'Puriya Dhanashri'. He plays the 'gayaki' style which is akin to vocal 'khyal' music. It was a fairly good presentation. He followed it up with 'Mogara Phulala', a Marathi abhang popularized by Lata Mangeshkar. It is a complex tune

irector and music composer Avdhoot Gupte has won critcial acclaim with his Zenda and Morya. However with his new venture, he touches a subject close to his heart – about a journey of a singer who starts off from a small village to the dizzy heights of stardom in ‘Ek Taara! Nyaneshawar Lokhande (Santosh Juvekar) is a simple bhajan singer in his obscure village who wins a music reality show and becomes an overnight star called 'Mauli' whose popularity is akin to some of the biggest singers of his time. He is the protégé of a modern minded girl Urja (Tejaswini Pandit) who supports Mauli all the way, right from signing a contract with a channel and his other endeavours. With stardom on the horizonl, Mauli’s arrogance is visible to see as he treats his wife Chatura (Madhura Nimbalkar) and his mate Vithu (Sagar Karande) with disdain and they decide to break ways and return back to their hamlet leaving Mauli fending for himself. Bhushan is an excellent percussionist. Varada Godbole, a fairly accomplished singer based in Thana, combines the ingredients of the Kirana and the Jaipur Attrauli gharana. She sings in a sharp voice, which is also quite flexible. She sang khyals in 'Bihag' and 'Shahana' with admirable competence. Her 'taan' patterns were impressive. He has also played along with instrumentalists like Ramesh Prem (Vichitra Veena) and Raghunath Seth (Bansuri). Iyer combines the Ajrada. Lucknow and Farrukhabad gharana of tabla. He has also learned from the Benaras gharana maestro Kishen Maharaj, which adds a special flavour to his strokes. His solo tabla recital at the Sharada Sangeet Vidyalaya was a rare treat.

MAULI- THE ROCKSTAR! hary's effort has to be recognized. The film’s first half is the story of a singer called Nyaneshwar Meshram but much has been borrowed from Elvis Presley’s classic ‘Jail House Rock’ and closer home ‘De Dhakka’. Santosh Juvekar gives a high spirited performance in his role. Tejaswini Pandit had doled out an impressive performance alongwith Madhura Nimbalkar and the other cast comprising Sunil Tawde, Sunil Ranade, Sagar Karande, Raees Lashkaria, Madhav Devchakke, Amol Gupte, Santosh Mayekar, Amit Raj, Ajit Parab, Jhanvi Arora, Amit Phalke, Mangesh Desai. child star Abhedya Gupte, Sridhar Phadke, Chaitanya Chandratre, lend good support to the script. EW DELHI: Presence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a leader makes the Indian team a good unit going into World Cup, former Pakistan cricketers Inzamam Ul Haq and Shoaib Akhtar said. "I believe having Dhoni as a leader is a big factor for the Indian team. An experienced captain in a big ticket event is always a plus. Dhoni is one player, who has performed for India in pressure situations and scripted innumerable comebacks for the team. Having a leader who knows how to handle pressure makes Dhoni cut above rest," Inzamam, who has played five World Cups for Pakistan, said during a 'Cricket Conclave' organised by News24 channel. Shoaib was even more forthright while dissecting Dhoni's style of captaincy. "With due respect and not taking any names, I have seen captains, who hide behind the team under pressure but Dhoni is one guy who would make the team hide behind him when they are under pressure. He is

two teams in with good chance of winning the Cup. Inzamam did not read too much into India's performance in Test and tri-nation series Down Under. "Let me tell you a story. In 1992, we went to Australia a month before World Cup. Not many know that we played six warm up games prior to World Cup and lost all six. We went onto win World Cup," Inzy, who looked completely different in his pathani suit and skull cap, said in his inimitable style. "The wickets in Australia have become very different from what it used to be during our time. These are good batting tracks. Also two months in Australia have gave them insight and understanding of these tracks. "Adjustment is always key and Inone guy who doesn't know the dian team will enjoy the advantage. meaning of fear," the straight talking But I can tell you one thing. "It's always the last 15-20 days that's the most crucial in a World Cup competition. It's a pattern that has emerged since 1983 when teams have got momentum in the last two weeks. In 1999, Australia peaked at right time after indifferent start. In this World Cup its all about three good days. "India and Pakistan are cornered tigers in the tournament. I think India versus Pakistan opening match will start from dressing room itself," Shoaib said. Analysing the strength of the Indian team, Inzamam feels that it's about "clicking in that match" at start of the World Cup. "Indian batsmen would need to put up a good score on the board which would in turn make their bowlers feel confident. I think 300 plus would be parscore in the tournament. You have seen Virat Kohli score four hundreds. I think Indo-Pak match at start will be crucial. A final before final. But I don't mind losing to India if Pakistan win World Cup," Inzamam said with a grin.

Holders India to enter World Cup in second spot

D

UBAI: Defending champions India will enter the 11th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup in second spot behind leaders Australia. After failing to win a single game in the recently concluded tri-series, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side trail Australia by six points in the ODI rankings, according to an ICC media release. Australia, who won the tri-series after humbling England in the final, are comfortably placed at the top with 120 ranking points followed by India (114) and South Africa (113). With just a few more international matches left to go before the the 50-over showpiece event kickstarts on February 14 in Australia and New Zealand, the 14 competing teams are gearing up for the warm-up matches slated between 8-13 of this month.Meanwhile in the player rankings, India's Virat Kohli is at the number three spot in the batsman's chart with South Africa's AB de Villers and Hashim Amla at the No.1 and 2 position respectively. Other Indians in the top-10 of the batting table include Shikhar Dhawan (7), whose lack of form in the tri-series came under intense criticism.

Pallikal powers to Winnipeg win, secures 9th WSA title W

Former Indian star opener Virender Sehwag has ample reason to laugh as he stresses that India has the wherewithal to qualify for last four in the World Cup.

‘India will reach WC semifinals’ N

EW DELHI: Out-of-favour India batsman Virender Sehwag today exuded confidence about India making it to the semifinals of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, saying that recent results would have little impact on the team's performance during the quadrennial extravaganza. "I am sure India will make it to the semifinals and after that it would depend on how they play on a particular day," said Sehwag. Asked which other teams according to him could make the last-four stage apart from India, Sehwag was prompt in his reply. "Besides India, I think Australia, South Africa and New Zealand would make the semis," he said. One of the most destructive opening batsmen refused to believe that India's lackluster show in their recent tour Down Under would have any influence on the upcoming World Cup. "I don't think the team will be much affected with their recent

performances. Everyone will give their 100 per cent effort during the World Cup and recent results may not have any influence," Sehwag insisted. Drawing comparisons with India's 2-5 defeat in the sevenmatch ODI series in New Zealand in the build-up to the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, Sehwag said the team ended up performing well during the marquee event. "Just before the 2003 World Cup, India had a disastrous tour of New Zealand and everyone thought that we won't do well in South Africa. But we ended up making it to the finals," said Sehwag during the launch of a special show by 92.7 BIG FM 'Cricket ka Big Headquarter'. Sehwag said he did not have any solution to offer to the team members for their poor result Down Under but expressed confidence that the players would work on their gray areas themselves. "Players will have to identify their problems.”

INNIPEG (CANADA): After conceding a game in the opening round, top seed Dipika Pallikal showed her true class in the Winnipeg Winter Club Women's Open by reclaiming the WSA squash title in her season opener here. Pallikal dispatched second seed and last year's runners-up Heba El Torky 11-4 11-9 11-8 in yesterday's final of the USD 15,000 event. The world no.13 from India had also won the title here in 2013 before compatriot Joshana Chinappa lifted the trophy last year. Pallikal had reached the final -the 15th of her career on the WSA World Tour -- after beating Donna Urquhart, the fourth seed from Australia making her Tour return after a six-month foot injury break. The 23-year-old Indian had endured a tough start to last season but this time it seems the work put in the lead up to the new year is bearing fruit. "It is a great win considering it is my first tournament of the year. All the matches were tough," Pallikal said. Pallikal usually trains abroad with former five-time world champion Sarah Fitzgerald in Melbourne but she recently spent some time with renowned Egyptian coach Amir Wagih in Washington DC before beginning her US leg of the season. "I really had a good off season to train back home and then it was nice to go back and train with Amir. He is one of the best in the world and the stint really helped," said the Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

"If Virat Kohli scores a century and then blows a flying kiss towards his girlfriend, I have no problems. Rather I have problem if a player scores zero and is blowing a flying kiss. We played cricket in a different era and now its a different era. We have to accept that," Kapil said at a 'Cricket Conclave' organized by News24. "We can't just sit back and think that cricket is no longer a gentleman's game. Times have changed. The generation I played was different. We grew up with Test cricket. But now you have sledging, abuses and T20 is an accepted format." Kapil also took a sarcastic dig at India's team huddle which he described as "hug". "Well I have never understood this team hug inside the ground at start of the match. What were you guys doing in dressing room. Only eating eggs!" On India's chances in the World Cup, Kapil said it was 25 percent and also explained his reason for it. "India I believe will reach semifinals and all four semi finalists will have 25 percent chance. You can't predict from there on. I believe start is very important. I think the first 15 overs will decide how India will perform. I would take 40/0 in first 15 overs which can give us 270 plus total. It's a must. But if India lose 2-3 wickets in 15 overs it will be difficult," Kapil said.

ing. He only came to know about it through another BCCI bigwig. He was taken aback as he is the sitting BCCI joint secretary, who is an executive functionary," a source very close to the BJP MP and president of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) said. The source also hinted that Thakur may no longer be a part of the Srinivasan camp after having been one of the important members of that faction. "Anurag told a few of his close associates that probably Srinivasan didn't like his straight forward stance of telling him to "step aside" after the spot-fixing controversy and subsequent arrest of Gurunath Meiyappan happened in 2013. You can say that probably, he is no longer a part of the Srinivasan faction," the source added. According to a top BCCI official, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, Assam Cricket Association's secretary Bikash Baruah have been invited by Srinivasan. Shukla is among the contenders for the BCCI president's post if gets the support of the east zone units. However, till Monday evening, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has not received any intimation about the Chennai meeting. The

EW DELHI: Barred by the Supreme Court to contest the elections, BCCI's president-in-exile N Srinivasan has called an informal meeting in Chennai on Thursday for some of the affiliated units to decide his future course of action. "Srinivasan has called a meeting in Chennai on February 5 which can be called a core committee meeting of the closest associates. Obviously, the date of the AGM and future course of action will be decided on that day. We will also get a clearer picture about Srini's course of action on that day," a top BCCI member, who will be going to Chennai, told PTI today. While it is expected that key office-bearers like secretary Sanjay Patel, interim president Shivlal Yadav will be present at the meeting, a notable absentee might be joint secretary Anurag Thakur, who apparently has "not been intimated" about the meeting. "Thakur will be busy as Delhi is going to polls on February 7 and there are lot of political commitments. But he did express his surprise that Srinivasan has not intimated him about the said meet-

AP’s Akshara wins title in All India Women’s Open Tennis

M

UMBAI: Fourth seed Akshara Iska of Andra Pradesh fashioned an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Vasavi Ganesan of Tamil Nadu to clinch the title in the Rs. 3.60 lakh All India Women's Open Tennis Tournament at the Khar Gymkhana. A confident Akshara ended the dream run of giant-killer Vasavi for her fourth title this season. She had earlier won at Trivandrum, Patna and the under-16 nationals in Mumbai.Using the double-handed backhand in good measure and a fierce forehand, Akshara dominated the championship round from the start, earning three breaks each in both sets to wrap up the contest in

90 minutes. "I couldn't take Vasavi for granted especially after she beat two seeds to enter the final," explained Akshara. "I had to make sure of minimizing errors. Khar Gymkhana has been a happy hunting ground after winning the under-12, under-14 and under16 titles over the years." Defending champions and third seeds Sagarika Phadke and Nupur Kaul of Maharashtra retained the doubles title, following a 6-4, 6-1 win over the unseeded TN-Maharashtra pair of Vasavi Ganesan and Aastha Dargude. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Ganesan and Dargude upset the second seeded pair of Sanya Madan and Himani Mor with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Mahindra to provide bikes to Aspar team in Moto GP M

UMBAI: Mahindra Racing, which had disbanded its twowheeler racing team from the 2015 Moto3 season, has tied up with Aspar to supply its bikes to other teams. The home grown major will be a constructor during the season with four teams including Aspar, which will also be a factory team. "We will not be running the Mahindra Racing factory team on our own this year, instead we have decided to focus on design, development and supply of the MGP30 to other racing teams in the Moto3 world championship and other national championships. The role of our factory team will be performed by Aspar team," Mahindra Racing CEO Mufaddal Choonia told reporters here in the course of a inter-

view. Under the new structure, the Aspar Team will concentrate on running the team and developing the riders, while Mahindra Racing will focus on developing the bikes and offer better support to its customer teams. The other teams using Mahindra bikes are French team CIP, team Italia and Ambrogio Racing and this year nine Mahindra MGP30 bikes will feature on the grid this year. After being part of the racing circuit from 2011, Mahindra Racing will be focusing on making bikes and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said, "we are still at a relatively early phase of our journey in motor sport, but the technological challenge and learning that we achieve through our rac-

ing programmes are of major importance to the whole group." Mahindra Racing recently opened a technical base at Besozzo near Varese in Northern Italy and Mahindra said, "We are going to see some exciting things coming out of that centre." Aspar team is owned by four-time world championship rider Jorge Martinez and the Spaniard said, "We have three talented young riders in the World Championship and some exciting new prospects in the Spanish Championship and I am confident that together with Mahindra we will enjoy a lot of success on track." Dorna Sports that owns the MotoGP rights, said there is a possibility of the Superbikes race in India in the future.

Supreme Court, in its judgement on January 22, had ruled that "no individual with commercial interests will be allowed to contest the elections," meaning that Srinivasan cannot contest for the post of BCCI chief until he clears himself of conflict of interest. The SC also served a directive to BCCI to hold its AGM and elections within six weeks of the judgement. As per norms, before annoucing the date of the AGM, the BCCI needs to give three weeks notice to all members before the meeting. Effectively it means that Srinivasan and his associates will have to decide the date of AGM by February 12 as it has to be held within first week of March as per SC ruling. The court ruled that Srinivasan will have to dissociate himself completely from Chennai Super Kings which also being probed by a Court-appointed three-member committee headed by ex CJI R M Lodha. With committee being given six months time to decide on the quantum of punishment for CSK and Rajasthan Royals, it is practically impossible for Srinivasan to dissociate himself from the franchise within six weeks time and contest the BCCI polls.

Verma asks Pawar to contest BCCI elections

N

EW DELHI: Secretary of the unrecognised Cricket Association of Bihar, Aditya Verma today urged former BCCI chief and NCP strongman Sharad Pawar to contest for the post of president in the Cricket Board's upcoming elections. The petitioner in the IPL spotfixing scandal, Verma's longdrawn battle with the N Srinivasan camp resulted in the Supreme Court banning the ICC chairman from contesting the BCCI polls. "I have requested Mr Pawar to contest the elections. BCCI is a sinking ship and only he can revive it once again because of his vast experience in administration and also integrity as an official," Verma told PTI. In a setback to Srinivasan, the

Supreme Court on January 22 barred him from contesting any BCCI election on grounds of conflict of interest and set up a judges committee under a former Chief Justice of India to decide on the punishment in the IPL scam that threaten the future of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). There is intense speculation that Pawar, who is currently the President of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), has decided to contest the BCCI elections. Pawar was BCCI president from 2005 to 2008. The Member of Parliament has also been the president of International Cricket Council from 2010 to 2012. The BCCI elections have been postponed twice due to the Supreme Court hearing in the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. On January 22, the Supreme Court ordered that BCCI elections should be held within the next six weeks. With Srinivasan's candidature now looking increasing doubtful due to his conflict of interest issues in Indian cricket, Pawar has emerged as a strong candidate though he may find the going tough as he has to be nominated by two units of East Zone. It is East Zone's turn to propose a candidate for the president's post this time.

ERTH: Making an impactful return in the triseries final to send England packing, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson said that the Eoin Morgan-led side would be "dreaming" if they believe that pressure will not be on them in their opening clash of the cricket World Cup. Returning from his monthlong rest, Johnson, who took

three wickets to help Australia humble England by 112 runs in the title clash yesterday, reacted to Morgan's comment of the pressure being more on the hosts when the two sides' clash on

February 14. "Every team is under pressure. It is a World Cup. I think they [England] are dreaming if they think they are not under pressure," Johnson was quoted as saying in the

Sydney Morning Herald. "It's a knockout situation and you have to win pretty much every game, that is the way I see it. We will try to win all the games we play in, there will be a little bit more

Langer will be next coach of Australia: Lehmann M

ELBOURNE: Australian head coach Darren Lehmann believes former Test cricketer Justin Langer is the right person to succeed him, considering the success he has already achieved in Western Australia. Lehmann, whose contract as Australian head coach was extended recently till mid-2017, knows that he won't be able to continue in this role forever given the demands that come with the position. "I believe he'll be the next coach of Australia," Lehmann told Australia's Fairfax Radio. "He's done a fantastic job

and he should be very proud of what he's achieved in WA. He's always ringing and asking questions and we're always throwing things at him as well and asking him for different ideas." Langer, who worked with the Australian team as a batting coach and mentor in 2009 under Tim Nielson, has achieved a lot of success as

coach of Western Australia and Perth Scorchers since 2012. Under him, Perth Scorchers won back-to-back titles in the Big Bash T20 League, Western Warriors clinched the Matador Cup and reached the finals of last season's Sheffield Shield. "It's a really united feeling in the Australian setup now where the state coaches are a very important part of what we're trying to do," Lehmann said. "And a guy who's played over 100 test matches – you'd be mad not to take his advice. From our point of view, we respect him very highly.”

pressure on us being a home World Cup but we are prepared for that," he added. Johnson though is not concentrating his energies on only one team and said that his job is to perform against everyone."It feels nice against any team, to be honest, when you can go out there and perform at your best and do the job that you have been put in the team for," Johnson said. "My job is to go out there and bowl fast and be aggressive and take wickets and I felt like I was pretty close to that and that excites me. I was really looking forward to playing some cricket again, the more I play the better I feel," he said. Johnson also believes that he can be as intimidating in the ODI format as he is in Test cricket. "I think at times, yeah, definitely using that short ball worked for me [on Sunday]," he said. "You have to adapt. Sometimes it is not going to work as much and I have to go to plan B or keep trying. I am a fast bowler who loves to bowl fast.”

Artists benefit more from National Games: P T Usha T

HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As yet another National Games progresses amid organisational lapses and controversies, legendary sprint queen P T Usha feels that the event has transformed into a carnival in which artists benefit more than sportspersons. Though the Games has helped improve the sports infrastructure at the grassroot level, Usha felt the event would not be of much help to the athletes preparing for international events including the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. "After all, the National Games is an Olympic-format event. But, organisers seem to concentrate more on the pomp and show of the opening and closing ceremonies of the event than giving due importance to sports and sportstars," Usha told PTI in an interview.

"The ongoing Games are no different. They try to ensure the participation of maximum number of artists in the inaugural and closing ceremonies and make it a big celebration," the legendary athlete, who once reigned the Indian track and field, said. However, Usha felt it was also hard to ignore the sports infrastructure that has come up solely because of the Games. "It helps upcoming sportstars to get better facilities including good stadiums, tracks and other essential infrastructure. It is not a small thing. I think, that is the only benefit of conducting the Games," said the Los Angeles Olympics finalist who lost the bronze in a thrilling photo finish in 1984. Usha amassed over 100 medals in different international events.

Anand to meet Caruana Clarke ready to play under Smith’s leadership in Grenke Classic opener S B

ADEN-BADEN (GERMANY): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will start his campaign against world number two Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the first round of the Grenke Chess Classic that gets underway here. A winner in the first edition in this spa-town in 2013, Anand will be facing a tough challenge in the tournament, especially from World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who starts as the top seed and hot favourite for the crown. Apart from Carlsen the organisers have also roped in Levon Aronian of Armenia, Michael Adams of England, Etienne Bacrot of France apart from German Grandmasters Arkadij Naiditsch and David Baramidze. The eight-player tournament will be played on round-robin basis and

there will be seven rounds in all.The time control will be classical with 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 for the next 20 and then a 15-minutes sudden death with a 30-second increment from move one. After losing the world championship match against Carlsen in November last, Anand recovered pretty quickly to win the London Classic ahead of Caruana and Vladimir Kramnik and all eyes will be on the Indian to see if he can pose a serious threat to Carlsen.

YDNEY: Battling to regain fitness from an hamstring injury, Australian World Cup captain Michael Clarke said that he is ready to play under the leadership of young Steven Smith. Amid reports that many Australian team members are vouching for stand-in skipper as a permanent choice after the 50-over showpiece event, Clarke said that he has no problems with Smith as captain. "Most definitely I would," Clarke replied on being asked on Triple M radio if he would play under Smith's leadership

at the World Cup. "I feel for Smithy because I sat in his shoes when a lot of the media were calling for (former captain) Ricky Ponting (to go). It's certainly not personal between Smithy and I. We've been friends for a long time and we'll continue to be," he added. There were also reports that many Australian cricket officials are also mulling for a change of guard after the World Cup ends and Clarke believes it's best to leave all these matters to the concerned authorities. "The people that sit above

both him and I will make their decisions," Clarke said. "Whatever they feel are the best 11 players, they will pick that 11. Whoever they feel is the best captain for the team then they'll pick that," added the 33-year-old batsman. Clarke though did rubbish rumours about certain team member's liking Smith over the injured captain. "I'd like to know where it's coming from. It's obviously disappointing because I haven't been around the team ... For the last seven weeks now I've been away from the group.”

Sri Lanka Cricket reported to anti-graft commission C

OLOMBO: Sri Lanka's cricket governing body SLC has been reported to the Commission on Bribery and Corruption. The Marxist JVP of the People's Liberation Front said they had highlighted 25 points over alleged miscon-

duct by top officials of bribery and corruption at SLC. Sri Lanka Cricket is suffering from mismanagement, corruption and authoritarianism, Sunil Handunneththi, a senior JVP lawmaker told reporters after handing over a written complaint to the anti-

graft commission. He said the complaints concerning the conduct of the former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga are included in the complaint. Ranatunga served as the CEO of Carlton Sports

Network (CSN), a channel linked to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's family. Cricket television rights, usually a preserve for the national television Rupavahini, was handed over to CSN without the proper tender procedure the opposition alleged.
