BJP functionary asks Fadnavis to scrap Metro III project
umbai BJP secretary Vivekanand Gupta urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday, to scrap the Metro-3 project and implement the coastal road project instead, in a letter written to the CM. "The Metro-3 project is worth Rs 23,136 crore as of today and there are chances that costs will escalate. A whopping amount will be spent on the Metro but it will cover an area of only an upto western suburbs near Aarey and also take five years to complete. So, I request you to scrap
the Metro 3 project," Gupta has written to Fadnavis. "The coastal road is a better alternative and will be completed in two years. The coastal road is cost effective, since its estimated cost is Rs 8,500 crore, which is just onethird of the Metro 3 project," Gupta stated in his letter. "The coastal road is planned as a freeway from Nariman Point to Kandivali. While its alignment accounts for the Bandra-Worli sea link, which has been in use since 2009, connectivity to Versova is
proposed through reclamation and a roads on stilts, overlooking the Bandra-Versova sea link plan," Gupta's letter stated. Meanwhile, a delegation led by Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar met Fadnavis yesterday and asked him to ensure that trees are not cut for a car shed of the Metro-3 project in Aarey Colony. "Fadnavis said that the government will set up a committee to decide about the proposed car shed at Aarey Colony," Shelar said.

VIBGYOR High students come out in support of ‘Save Aarey’
GOING GREEN: Students along with their teachers during the ‘Save Aarey’ campaign
By A Staff Reporter
E
ven as the Aarey development plan becomes the most debated topic in the government and environmental circles, the VIBGYOR High, Malad organised a ‘Green Camp’ in the school last weekend to support the ‘Save Aarey Campaign’. The entire activity was initiated and volunteered by the students from Grade 5-8. The students arranged various activities for the parents like quiz about nature, slogan writing, message writing with thumb impression in an outlined tree, took them through animated videos and also showcased a presentation highlighting different ways to reduce carbon footprint. Green Camp was an outcome of the informative experience the students had during their participation in the tree walk at Aarey, organised by ‘Save Aarey’ community which is a voluntary action group of concerned citizens working together with associated NGOs such as ‘Vanashakti’, ‘Greenline’, ‘Walkers club’ etc. The trail briefed them on identification of various trees, their relevance to our existence and associated mythological stories and the importance of preserving nature. The students also wrote their messages on postcards to the environment ministry for preservation of the colony during their visit to Aarey. VIBGYOR High is the first and the only school, at present, to participate in the ‘Save Aarey’ Campaign. Around 300 parents and students extended their support to the move-
ment by creating a banner through finger imprint and signature and also writing messages on postcards. The banner would be displayed at various events related to the campaign, while the postcards will be shared with the government and tree authorities, representing the public’s views towards the cause. Appreciating the initiative by their students, Ms. Sunita George,
Principal, VIBGYOR High, Malad said, “As an educational institution, it is important that we enlighten our students to the needs of the society. At VIBGYOR High, students are provided with varied opportunities that help in preparing them for responsible citizenship.” VIBGYOR High, Malad has been inculcating the understanding on the cause and purpose of nature preservation in their students through various mediums. The school had also organised guest lectures by Kripa Raman, Naturalist with 20 years of experience in journalism; Lovleen Mishra, Theatre artist and Naturalist and Priya Mishra, associated with various NGOs to create awareness about preserving the ‘GREEN LUNG’ of the city. The school will also be conducting tree walks for groups of students at regular intervals to spread awareness about preserving the natural resources of the city.

SSC board’s apathy turns bane for special, differently-abled students By Yatin Ingle
W
hile the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) STD 10 board exams have just begun yesterday, there was chaos at a few exam centres. As the special and differently abled students have their seating arrangement along with the normal students, the examiners as well as the students are in a fix. The special and differently abled students have to be provided with a separate room but the state board this year has denied them the same. Chaos reigned as the special and differently abled students were requesting for a helping hand from the exam supervisors, which resulted in the other students getting
disturbed. This chaotic situation has also brought to light the fact that the examiners were not attending to the special and differently abled students. This year, the SSC students were shocked to note that the special and differently abled students have been not been given a separate room. Some of these students were not comfortable in the general classroom and a few of them also complained about their discomfort caused due to the benches in the classrooms. A differently abled student, who has been given the seating arrangement along with normal students at an exam centre in Churchgate says, "It is difficult for us to ask for help again and again as it causes distur-
bance to the other students. On the other hand, there is discomfort in our seating arrangements due to our medical and physical problems. We had requested the board for special rooms but we have not been provided the same and hence we are facing lot of difficulties.” Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, State board, Mumbai told the ADC: "If a student is appearing for the exams with a writer, only then a special seating arrangement is provided. Considering the major difficulties of the special and handicapped students, other exam rooms are provided only when that student himself and his college/school seek permissions from the board.

PM has ‘thali’ with other MPs at Parliament’s canteen
PRIME Minister Narendra Modi on Monday surprised some MPs having lunch in Parliament's canteen as he suddenly landed
there to join them, perhaps becoming the first person to hold the post to do so, and paid Rs 29 for a vegetarian 'thali' (meal).
A TV grab shows PM Narendra Modi having lunch at the Parliament canteen on Monday.
Around 18 MPs were having lunch, sitting in small groups on different tables, in Room Number 70, when Modi landed there at 1 PM. The room on the first floor of Parliament building is for MPs. The Prime Minister greeted the MPs. Some of them came to introduce themselves to him, according to the canteen staff. Then he sat on a table, already
occupied by three MPs and ordered food. "Anything special, sir," canteen in-charge B L Purohit asked the Prime Minister. "No, I want normal vegetarian thali," Modi replied. He also ordered fruit salad. Immediately, a thali, consisting of palak sabzi, rajma, dal and salad, was served along with rice and a tandoori roti. "The total bill for the food was Rs 29. He gave a note of Rs 100 and I returned Rs 71," said waiter Rama Shankar who attended on the Prime Minister. He did not ask for bottled water and drank RO water, staffers said. He was there for about 20-25 minutes. Two of the MPs on Modi's table were from Gujarat. Union Minister Piyush Goyal also joined in after some time. Realising that it was a "historic" occasion, Purohit requested the Prime Minister to write in a 'Suggestion Book' which he presented to him. "Annadata, sukhi bhav (Blessings to the one who feeds)," wrote Modi in Hindi and signed it. According to sources in Parliament, this was the first time any Prime Minister had lunch in the canteen as a customer. Rajiv Gandhi had once eaten in
the canteen but not as Prime Minister, the sources said.

Cong names Ashok Chavan as MPCC chief, MRCC goes to Sanjay Nirupam By Suyash Padate
T
he Congress high command finally took the call on the state Congress affairs yesterday and appointed former chief minister Ashok Chavan as the new Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president. At the same time Sanjay Nirupam has been appointed as party's Mumbai region chief. After the debacle in the two consequent elections, the Congress high command was seriously considering to make changes in the state leadership. However, the whole precess was delayed due to the infighting among the leaders. After much hue and cry the Congress big bosses swung into action mode. This move came nearly 10 months after the Congress was routed in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and four months after it suffered major setback in the October 2014 state Assembly elections. Chavan replaced Manikrao Thakre, who headed the party for seven years. Nirupam took over from Janardhan Chandurkar, who headed the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee for two years. Both Chavan and Nirupam are expected to revive the party for forthcoming civic polls. In December 2008 Ashok Chavan took over as a chief minister in the wake of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks which took the toll of his predecessor late Vilasrao Deshmukh. However, he was

Chavan, successfully fought the Lok Sabha election and managed to stop the Modi wave in in Nanded. He was among the two MPs elected from the state. Now he has a tough task cut out for him to build up the Congress from the ruins of the last Lok Sabha and Assembly debacles and check the growing clout of the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Nirupam, is former Shiv Sena MP and executive editor of the party mouthpiece 'Dopahar ka Saamana' till he quit the party in 2005. He joined the Congress and was elected from Mumbai North
Lok Sabha constituency in 2009, which he lost by a record margin in 2014. On the other hand the rift in the Congress was wide open after these appointments. Expressing reservations about the appointment of Ashok Chavan and Sanjay Nirupam, former chief minister Narayan Rane claimed the party high command did not consult the state leaders on the issue. “The party leadership didn't consult state leaders before making the announcement. It would have been in the party's interest had we been consulted. It seems Congress hasn't learned from the drubbing in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Rane has fired the salvo.
he state government has issued medical advisory to all General Practitioners (GPs) and all municipal corporations in the state asking them to do away with laboratory tests and prescribe Tamiflu to patients having fever, cough and influenza like symptoms for more than a day. RTI activist Jhamu Anand and his supporter displays copies of the big housing scam in Nagpur, at the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, on Monday.

A
t a press conference organised on Monday, RTI activist and AAP member Jammu Anand made revelations about a housing scam which took place at Butibori, Nagpur. Anand told the media, "Indorama Workers Cooperative Housing Society asked for a piece of land from the MIDC for affordable housing of for industrial workers. MIDC leased out the land for 95 years to the housing society. The construction took place in two phases. On the completion of the second phase, it was inaugurated by the then BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, who called the housing project unique and said that it should be implemented as Butibori model at other places too. The inauguration took place of January 15, 2013, and within next six months with the first rain of the year, all the 270 houses started leaking. When approached by a few workers, we started to collect information about the housing society from various departments through RTI application and we got to know surprising facts. The first thing was that the land which was leased
out by MIDC to Indorama Society was first demanded by a housing company named Antodayay Gharkol Yojna Pvt Ltd, which was owned by Nitin Gadkari. MIDC rejected the demand by stating that the land can't be given to a company but it can be given to a workers' society. After this the Indorama Society was formed, Nitin Gadkari and current CM Devendra Fadnavis were the advisors of the workers' society and the land was finally leased out to the society. The initial cost per house was said to be 1.10 lakh to 1.20 lakh. But the cost escalated to four times the said cost later." Anand further added, "Through RTI application sent to MIDC we came to know that the society failed to obtain the Building Completion Certificate (BCC) from MIDC. And the reason specified by MIDC was that the construction was not done as per the sanctioned map. Also MIDC directed the society not to go for the inauguration as it didn't have the BCC." Talking about other revelations Anand said, "The society collected 27 lakh for water connection but deposited only Rs.5 lakh to the MIDC. Rs.92 lakh were col-
07
lected for service charges and VAT but we found out that the society was not even registered at any of these departments leaving aside the depositing of the money. Also Rs.2.5 crore were spent from the MLA and MP funds. The workers were channelised to Nagpur Nagrik Sahkari Bank for home loans despite the interest rate being higher than the national banks. A total amount of Rs 8,04,38,000 was given as loan. The bank also overlooked the fact that the construction was not as not as per the sanctioned map and gave the second installment to the workers. The address of the society is also in the name of Nitin Gadkari. We filed a police complaint with Butibori police station but no action was taken. We also approached the Anti Corruption Bureau and don't know what the development is? Now we are approaching the CM and will ask him to look into the matter. Though he himself was one of the advisors of the society we still expect him to fulfil his constitutional duties and do the needful. Nitin Gadkari is the one who is responsible for it and he got huge benefits from the scam."
t was a heart rendering moment at Carmelite Convent English School in Vasai, when young students thronged the main gates during recess time to share their tiffin boxes with a teacher who was denied entry into the school on Monday. The teacher Diana Fernandes (52), was stopped at the main gates by the security personnel on Monday morning after orders from the school management. A resident of Tarkhad village in Vasai, Fernandes who teaches Maths and Science was taken to task for her alleged interaction at the recently held Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meet. The teacher had been served with a memo on February 24, to which she failed to respond. After being denied entry into the school, Fernandes in a mark of protest squatted outside the main gate of the school. Learning
Students offering their tiffin to their dear teacher Diana Fernandes. about the episode, some students rushed to the gates during recess time and offered food from their tiffin boxes to the agitating teacher. The teary eyed students also shouted slogans: “We Want Our Miss”. A team from the education department and local police station also visited the school but they were of no
help as all this failed to evoke any kind of response from the school management. “PTA meetings are hardly held by the school. And when supportive teachers like Diana Fernandes echo their sentiments on the issue, they are punished in this fashion. We will not tolerate such injustice,” said a PTA member.

and the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance for having worked out an arrangement to deny them this post, the NCP members staged a walkout from the house. “As per law, the second largest party should get the post of leader of opposition. This is nothing but a calculated ploy to create a rift between the NCP and Congress. We will move court against the Mayor’s decision,” said, NCP corpoartor Dhruvkishore Patil. The issue is all set to turn into a major political row as the NCP with 26 members is the second largest party in the 91-member MBMC House followed by a distant 17 of the Congress party. Meanwhile veteran BJP leader Rohidas Patil was selected as the Leader of the House.

Mufti’s praise for Pak, Hurriyat, Separatists I
F we go by what he has said, the conclusion is unavoidable that the PDP chief minister of J&K Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is almost on the side of Pakistan. He points out that while other regions in India with Muslim population were in Pakistan, Kashmir had decided to join India. And the chief minister says the election was successfully completed not because the people of Kashmir participated in it in large numbers but because the Hurriyat leaders, militants and Pakistan decided to remain helpful and peaceful. Mufti gave credit to Pakistan for the success of the election. This observation was hotly debated in Parliament and the Congress party staged a walk-out. The BJP declared it was the people of Kashmir and the army that should be credited for the poll success. Can the BJP expect cooperation from the PDP had the majority, it would have perhaps passed a resolution in the assembly thanking Pakistan, militants and the separatists for making the election a success. It might have even passed a resolution finally expressing the view that since the majority of people in Kashmir is Muslim, the state belongs to Pakistan. No wonder the PDP wanted the withdrawal of the army from Kashmir. If we seriously consider what Mufti has said, it becomes clear sooner or later the BJP is likely to be involved in a confrontation course with its coalition partner.

ULL marks to the arrogance of China! It summons the Indian envoy at Beijing and conveys its displeasure over the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Arunachal Pradesh. The territory is part of India and was never claimed by China till some years ago when it attained the military prowess worth the name. Beijing told our ambassador Ashok Kantha that Modi’s visit “undermined China’s territorial sovereignty right and interests.” Not long ago, Beijing had begun stapling visas of the people of Arunachal visiting China to indicate that it was a ‘different’ territory as if it was not part of India. New Delhi has borne the humiliation quietly then and has done it so now after the Indian Prime Minister has visited part of his own country. This is, however, the first time that Beijing has publicly expressed its unhappiness. It has in the past accepted without demur the maps showing Arunachal Pradesh as India’s territory. So far the dispute has been over a small territory between Arunachal and the China border. The status of Arunachal has been seldom questioned.
taken for granted is something China should be made to realize. Probably, New Delhi does not face the rumpus it would cause if the PM’s visit is postponed, if not cancelled. But China has given enough of provocation to make India reconsider the visit. China’s arrogance should not go without being rebutted. Matters about the territory relate to India’s sovereignty as they should not be taken lightly. Prime Minister Modi should find an early opportunity to tell China that the territorial integrity was not dependent on relations between New Delhi and Beijing. In fact, it is the other way round. The future of Sino-
Part of arrogance
BETWEEN THE LINES
Again it is a part of arrogance when the important message is conveyed through Chinese vice-Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, who says: “Modi’s visit undermined China’s territorial sovereignty, right and interests. Such act by the Indian side artificially amplified differences between the two countries on the border issue and thus went against the principles and consensus that the two sides reached on properly addressing the issue.” Thus far New Delhi has stood firm to the appreciation of the country. It has rightly gone to the extent of saying that the Prime Minister would be visiting Arunachal again. The message would have gone home clearly if New Delhi had announced the date also. True, the Prime Minister’s engagements have to be scheduled beforehand. But a departure could have been made in view of the importance of the problem. The message would have been loud and clear. In fact, the BJP, if not the government, should have inspired a debate whether the Prime Minister should visit China in May, as scheduled, to convey the nation’s annoyance as well as concern. That India cannot be
Nehru was wrong
Kuldip Nayar India relations would improve if there was a consensus on each other’s sensitivity over the territorial sovereignty. China is in occupation of a substantial part of Indian Territory in the northeast. New Delhi’s suspicion of China’s aggrandizement was well founded because India has been prey to the betrayal of trust. In a letter to state chief ministers, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said: “If we cannot have a real peace and cooperation between nations in the world, the next big thing is to try and avoid the outbreak of war on a large scale in the hope that this may give the world an opportunity some time later of arriving at peaceful settlements. “If however war broke out, then we shall keep out of it also. It will be some gain if a part of the earth’s surface is kept out of this terrific conflict between giants. This is the reason why we have refused to align ourselves with either of the two great power blocks and why
What is spiritual attainment? “W
HAT is life on earth after all! Is it not only a few days to pass somehow?” The day ends, the months and the years pass, and so time slips by. One comes to the end of life before one has expected it, and the whole past becomes like a dream. Ask a man who has lived a hundred years, 'What do you think about life on earth?' He will say, 'One night's dream, my child, it is no longer than that.' If that is all there is to life, then those who consider it thus will realize they should think about the hereafter. Just as some think, 'While we are able to work we must strive in order to make provision for our old age that we may be more comfortable,' so those who think of the hereafter say, 'Life is short, it is nothing but an opportunity. We must prepare something so that later we shall have the benefit of it.' Yet the wise who believe that they must use the time and opportunity which is given to them in this life to prepare for the next one, have accomplished a great deal. It is something to admire. It is said that the earth and the sky and space do not accommodate a person who does not answer life's demands, although for exceptional souls there are exceptional laws, for the lives of exceptional beings cannot be explained in ordinary terms. One may ask what will be the future of those who have not fulfilled the demand of life. Will they have to
we are not agreeable to joining either the Middle East Defence Organisation or the South East Asia one…We live now onwards in a war atmosphere and wish all the energies of many nations turned towards war production.” Still Nehru was one person who at that time could avert the conflict and he did. Modi does not enjoy the same status in the world, nor has he the vision. Yet he is in a position to stall, with the help of the newly-won friend, US President Barack Obama. The ambition of Beijing to dominate the world affairs is nothing new. It has always wanted to be a ‘Sultan’ and treat the world as its ‘durbar’. I recall how angry were the former army generals at Beijing where I touched upon at a meeting that China was still in control of India’s territory. Their reply was hawkish when they said: “You have forgotten the lesson we taught you in 1962.”
come back to learn their lesson once more? We must all learn our lesson right now. Life is lived right now, its demand is right now, and we must answer it right now. At every moment we are asked to perform a certain duty, to fulfill a certain obligation. And to become conscious of this and to do it in the most fitting and right manner, that is the true religion. We understand life's demands by under-
MATTER & SPIRIT standing life better. There are some who do not answer life's demands because they do not know what life asks of them. And there are others who do not answer life's demands although they do know. When the demands of the outer life are different from what the inner life asks of us, we should fulfill the demands of the outer life without neglecting those of the inner life. We have to become like the ebb and flow. This is a symbolical expression. A certain thing is accomplished at one time by sympathy, and at another time by indifference. One situation we must meet by taking interest in it, in another situation we must become indifferent, not concerned with it. If in a sea there were always ebb and no flow, or always flow and no ebb, then this would be a dead sea. The living
Nehru was wrong in recognizing Tibet as part of China. By doing so, he probably thought that he would strengthen his relations with Beijing. But its then Prime Minister, Chou EnLai, was only exploiting Nehru’s contacts to be known in the world. Once his purpose was served, Chou En-Lai showed his real face when he attacked India in 1962. By all means we should have good relations with China but not at the expense of our territory. What purpose would Modi’s visit serve when Beijing is not willing to recognize Arunachal Pradesh as part of our territory? It is still not too late to make China realize that it cannot get away with the insult it heaps on India by not recognizing Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of our country. Relations between India and China are important for peace in the region. But China has to be as much sincere as India has been. But one gets a feeling that Beijing wants to talk from the point of strength and can see its efforts to encircle India. It has given a generous assistance to Nepal and is in the process of setting up a port at Sri Lanka. Beijing is also trying to win over Myanmar. India would be the last country to object to good relations with its neighbours. But if the intention is to use them as a lever to pressure New Delhi, it smacks of ulterior motive. This does not speak of friendship, which India wants to cultivate. sea is both inhaling and exhaling. Thus in everything we do in life, we should be able to meet every situation and event with the manner that the situation demands. These are the four different ways people take in order to accomplish the purpose of their lives: making wealth, being conscientious in their duty, making the best of every moment of life, and preparing for the future. All these four have their good points. And once one realizes this there is no need to blame anyone for having taken another path than our own for the accomplishment of life's purpose. By understanding this one becomes tolerant. And now we come to the ultimate purpose of life, which is always one and the same: for every man has in the end to accomplish the same purpose, in whatever way he will. He will come to it either consciously or unconsciously, easily or with difficulty. But he has to accomplish it. That is spiritual attainment. One might wonder if a person who is so material that he never thinks about it and who refuses to consider this question will ever attain to spiritual realization, but the answer is yes. Everyone, consciously or unconsciously, is striving after spiritual attainment. Sometimes he does not take the same way as we do, sometimes his point of view and his method differ, and sometimes one person attains to spiritual realization much sooner than another. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

BUDGET: A BIG BONANZA FOR THE CORPORATES OUR former finance minister P. Chidambaram, was interviewed by two TV channels on Sunday and the Harvard-trained economist came out in flying colours in both of them. Though his age did show up on his face, he was as sharp as ever and took on an aggressive, pro-BJP, Rajdeep Sardesai, with aplomb. He pointed out that Jaitley's budget left the poor high and dry and only offered a big bonanza to the corporates of the order of 2 lakh crore in about five years by reducing their tax. He said that this was the new government's way of repaying the corporates for putting it in the saddle with an overwhelming majority which is indeed very true. The railway minister had also hinted that a few stations and trains will be named after some of the corporates. For all their tall promises of 'achche din', it will remain only as a mirage for the poor common man who is facing increases all around -- the service tax has been hiked, the cost of petrol and diesel went up even before Jaitley resumed his seat after presenting the budget, he will have to pay more now for the cable TV, internet, gym and courier services.

monthly, nay, daily budget of the middle class of our nation. More ironically, ‘Jaitley’s budget’ has done a lot for the growth, but for whose ‘growth?’ I may hope that in the long run this budget may prove useful also to the middle class, but absolutely nothing has been done to control the price rise of all the essential commodities like vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses, general medicines etc. daily needed by everybody, including India’s middle class people. Nothing has been done against the hoarders and the black marketers of these things, till date. Their ‘growth’ needs to be eradicated on war footing.

THIS refers to your editorial 'A small, good beginning' (ADC, March 2). Budget has belied the hopes of millions of middle class individual tax payers who were expecting some relief from this government. FM failed to give them any relief but further burdened them with increase in service tax. Government promised the moon when they were seeking votes but they behaved as badly as previous governments. It seems that irrespective of Govt in Centre, common man is taxed arbitrarily. Govt saw merit in dropping wealth tax and reducing corporate tax but saw no merit in raising exemption limit from 2.5L to 3.5L minimum to give relief to individual tax payers who are left with practically no cash on their hands. FM rubbed salt on their wounds by saying that through investment they can save taxes, when middle class is struggling to make both their ends meet. slum dwellers, who have been stalling a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project, could be vacated, reports PTI. According to Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the builder undertook the redevelopment project under Government-sponsored SRA scheme on a slum land in Malad after completing all formalities. However, some residents in the area opposed the project and challenged it before a competent authority at Collector's office in Bandra. After hearing all sides, the Collector's office rejected the appeal of the residents and ordered its officers in Malad to pass an order asking the dwellers to vacate their shanties to pave the way for redevelopment, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACB) Rajesh Bagalkote. The matter came before Patil and Bhoir, who sought a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh to issue the order. After negotiations, the duo settled for Rs 1.50 lakh, the officer said. Not ready to shell out the money, the builder approached the ACB. Accordingly, a trap was laid and the duo was caught while accepting the bribe of Rs 1 lakh as a first instalment from the realtor, Bagalkote said.

One of the most difficult groups of people to deal with are those who have a problem with alcohol as secret drinkers. Simply identifying whether they are addicted to alcohol becomes difficult, because they do their best to conceal their drinking, mostly because they realise that it is in excessive amounts. However, they may not accept that they’re addicted. Here’s how to identify a secret drinker.
They always come to a party slightly buzzed, because they’ve had a few drinks while they were ‘getting ready’ at home. For secret drinkers, vodka is often the preferred choice of drink, because this odourless spirit helps them to hide the fact that they’ve been drinking. While most alcoholics try to avoid social gatherings where alcohol will not
be served, closet drinkers avoid almost all outings so that they can keep their drinking hidden from friends and family. When this bad habit is coupled with the other signs on this list, it’s one of the easiest ways to recognise a closet drinker. They will lie about little things — from what they did last night, to who they are going to meet. If you find that their stories are inconsistent, it can be a good sign that they are hiding their drinking. They may suddenly decide to leave the table, announcing that they have somewhere to be. Sometimes, you may not even know where they’ve been for a few hours. Not telling friends and family about where and what they are doing, or leaving early from social gatherings helps a closet drinker get home or go to a bar, where they can drink in secret.

Prof. Dr. Keiki R. Mehta, Surgical Chief and Medical Director of Mehta International Eye Institute in Colaba, India’s foremost ophthalmologist is a brilliant surgeon with outstanding innovative surgical skills, and specializes in Cataract, LASIK, Glaucoma, Squint, Retinal surgeries and treatment. In this column, our Ophthalmic Consultant, Prof. Dr. Keiki Mehta will enlighten the readers’ on the latest Bladeless CATALYS Femtosecond Cataract Laser system. Dear Dr. Keiki Mehta, I am 68 and retired. For the past 15 years I am a HIGH DIABETIC and have BLOOD PRESSURE which is not under control. I am on diabetic medication as well as blood thinners and my other blood pressure medication. My vision has now become bad as I have developed cataracts in both eyes which need to be operated. A few weeks ago my cousin brother was operated by you on your latest Bladeless CATALYS laser cataract surgery system. I also would like to do my cataract surgery only by you at your hospital on your latest CATALYS system. How do I get prepared for my surgery as I am at present on medication for both, Diabetes and Blood Pressure? — Beroze Gandhi
Prof. Dr. Keiki R. Mehta, awarded the “Leading International Ophthalmologist Award by the Swiss Eye Research Foundation, by the President of the Swiss Ophthalmic Society, Prof. Bojan Pajic for his International Achievements in Ophthalmology outstanding Contribution, Research and Surgical Skills in Ophthalmology.
Dear Beroze, The Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS precision laser is the latest and most advanced cataract system. This latest system breaks up the cataract liquefies it without entering the eye with the help of the laser. Then the liquefied fragments are sucked out and
the new lens is injected
The entire process is over
in less than 40 seconds. Thus the name Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS laser system. Since you are a diabetic and a high blood pressure patient, this new Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS laser
system is ideal for you. Let me explain how this new CATALYS Laser Cataract System would benefit you and other patients just like you. In the older cataract surgical unit we had to cut the eye through a micro incision which naturally would heal but since an incision was made, there was a little blood. With the CATALYS is NO BLADE so NO CUTTING. The laser that liquefies the cataract and so there is no bleeding. The system works only on the cataract and on no other part of the eye. Since nothing touches the eye, except the laser light, it is totally PAINLESS. This makes it extremely VERY SAFE for patients with DIABETES and BLOOD PRESSURE. Since it is a laser it makes it more accurate as the surgeon can then decide at
which angle he would need to enter the eye. The hardest and the most difficult cataracts can be done very easily without any difficulty and the recovery is also much faster. So don’t fear as you will be in very safe hands and also, with the safest and most advanced cataract system for your cataract surgery. As you are a DIABETIC and a HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE patient, you DO NOT STOP any of your medication and also remember, NO STOPPING YOUR BLOOD THINNERS either. You would just need a detailed evaluation prior fixing for your surgery. For further information CALL: 9821018214 / 9819760702 or 22150082 / 22151676 or email: askdrkeiki@mehtaeye.com

talKing to an alcoholic connection with your loved one. You will not be able to start a conversation about their problem — now or in the future, and so, this will completely counteract what you’re trying to do. Instead, be upfront about their problem, ask friends to help and if things get worse, ask a counsellor to help you out.
Trying to convince an alcoholic about his/her drinking problem is one of the most difficult parts of helping someone with alcohol abuse issues. The following points, which have been given to us by the A.A., will help. n let them go on a binge: We were as
surprised as you are! But, once you understand why this is a preferred method, it will all make sense. It is easier to talk about the ills of a particular substance, whether it’s alcohol, tobacco or drugs, when the person concerned has himself seen the negative effects. As long as they are in no physical or medical danger, it is a better idea to let them go on a binge and then talk to them about their problem only when they’re recovering from their heavy bout of drinking. n don’t try any tricks: There are several
>> It is important to know what to say and how to say it when you’re trying to help someone who has a drinking problem
n don’t mention alcoholism: As sad as it
may be, the word alcoholism carries a lot of dogma, so mentioning it will usually put an addict on the defensive. It is a better idea to talk about their behaviour instead of their problem. This puts the focus on their actions — something that, deep-down, they that know they can control. n get help: We don’t mean call a doctor. We
are talking about someone who can provide true insight — an ex-alcoholic. They understand the situation that your loved one is in better than anyone else, and will have the best strategy to deal with them. You can ask them for tips, and if they know the person, you can ask them to speak with your loved one directly.
flavourless medicines available in the market that promise to treat alcoholism and need you to secretly mix them in your loved one’s food. Not only is there absolutely no proof that these medicines work, if they find out (and they probably will), it will impact your bond and
alcoholism myths
staying sober
myth: If you drink responsibly, you won’t become an alcoholic. Fact: The truth is that even if you drink responsibly, you can become an alcoholic. Remember that people do not always start to drink irresponsibly intentionally, but because of the nature of alcoholism.
avoid certain situations
Avoidance is generally seen as negative behaviour, especially when it concerns relationships, health issues and finances. However, avoiding certain situations can reduce the likelihood that be put under pressure to consume alcohol. Avoid locations that hold memories of alcohol and those where it is easily accessible such as bars.
myth: If someone doesn’t drink every day and can go weeks or even months between drinking bouts, they don’t suffer from a drinking problem. Fact: A person doesn’t have to drink every day or a fixed number of times in a set period in order to have a problem with alcohol. If drinking affects one of several areas of your life, including your home, social life, career, medical needs, leisure time and financial responsibilities, you should consider getting help before your problems are aggravated. myth: If they’ve been sober for a while, alcoholics are ‘cured’ and can return to social or occasional drinking. Fact: Alcoholism, like any other addiction, is never cured. Alcoholics can never safely return to drinking, because drinking in any amount could reactivate their addiction. myth: Your body develops a tolerance to alcohol over time. This means that you can drink more without getting affected by it. Fact: The more alcohol you drink, the more damage you do to your body. A tolerance to alcohol means that your body has started to get affected by alcohol! myth: Beer drinkers can’t be alcoholics, because beer barely contains any alcohol. Know the warning signs
Knowing what to look out for and when you (or a loved one) may be most at risk of a relapse can be helpful. Emotional and social triggers can cause a relapse. They include the loss of a loved one, health issues, financial problems, loss of a job and social conflicts. Some other warning signs that you should look out for include: n Sudden changes in your daily routine. n Avoiding responsibilities. n Anxiety. n Displaying excessive anger. n Obsessive behaviour.
beer can’t be alcoholics. Beer is seen as a light form of alcohol and, in fact, does have a smaller percentage of alcohol than wine and stronger liquor. But, a serving of beer is larger. Feast your mind on this: a pint of beer, a glass of wine and a small measure of hard liquor contain the same amount of alcohol!
get help
Asking for help is an important step to battling any addiction, which is why more men than women relapse. Getting help in the form of group therapy or joining an organisation such as Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) can help you stay sober. According to A.A., alcoholics should ask for help when they feel as though they are going to relapse, and not after it has happened.
myth: Alcoholics are generally found in the lower reaches of society. Fact: This is not true. Most alcoholics are highfunctioning, which means that they can hold good jobs and are well-known in society. It can be more difficult for high-functioning alcoholics to fight their addictions for a variety of reasons — they may be in denial about their problem, or feel as though admitting it would cause them to lose their standing in society.

Factors that increase the chances oF a relapse Specific risk factors may vary, but there are several common factors that can increase your chances of relapsing. People who are involved in treating alcoholism have seen that a very large percentage (between 80% and 90%) of people treated for alcoholism, relapse. This was initially seen as an exception to the rule, but is now thought of as being analogous to the flare-ups and recurrences that are seen in chronic physical diseases. Factors that increase your risk of returning to your drinking habits include: n internal temptation: Some report that the urge to drink is always present and never goes away, even after the initial withdrawal symptoms subside. n Frustration: Alcohol is seen as an easy coping mechanism to deal with frustrations of life and other negative emotions, but it doesn’t really help you to cope with a situation — burying yourself in a bottle becomes a way to escape issues. n social pressure: Whether directly or indirectly, social pressures play a big part in an alcoholic relapsing. Alcohol has become part of our social culture. Friends expect you to have a few beers with the gang, and may not easily accept a sober exdrinker. n stress: Stress can be one of the biggest factors leading up to a relapse, mainly because alcohol is used to block out physical or emotional pain. An alcoholic can always turn to for immediate, shortterm comfort.
WithdraWal symptoms Alcohol withdrawal can start anytime from two to eight hours after your last drink and may last for weeks. The symptoms include: n Tremors or shaky hands. n Sweating. n Headaches. n Anxiety. n Nausea. n Vomiting. n Irritability. n Insomnia. The more serious symptoms generally occur 24-72 hours after someone stops drinking. They include: n Visual, auditory and tactile hallucinations. n Seizures. n High blood pressure. n Irregular heartbeat. n Fever.

Go the fermented way!
Plain yoghurt, sauerkraut, kombucha and pickles — you should include these fermented foods in your diet. Yamini Walia tells you why
>> Fermented food help you absorb more nutrients as it has a good balance of gut bacteria and digestive enzymes
>> Fermented foods last long and are also cost effective
W
e’re aware that a large section of society admonishes the consumption of fermented foods in favour of fresh food. However, fermented food can have several benefits and wellness experts are quickly catching on to them. Nutritionist Mansi Padechia, tells us, “There is some ongoing research about how important these mighty microbes may be for our health, and the initial results are positive. Several cultures around the world have been eating fermented foods for years, from idli/dosa in South India to sauerkraut in Germany and kimichi in Korea.” For those who don’t know, fermented foods are items that have been prepared through a process called lactofermentation, in which natural bacteria feeds on the sugar and starch in the food, creating lactic acid. This process preserves the food and creates beneficial enzymes, vitamin B, Omega-3 fatty acids and strains of probiotics.
What are its benefits? Apart from how good fermented dishes taste, there are several other benefits of this type of food. Take a look at a few of the most important ones: n Probiotics: Incorporating fermented foods in your diet ensures that there is a healthy balance of bacteria in your digestive system. Mansi explains, “Fermented food items such as yoghurt are stacked with probiotics, which have been directly linked to reduced incidences of digestive problems (including diarrhoea) and irritable bowel syndrome. Also, for those who have low immunity, these are especially beneficial, as they slow down the effects of cancer and HIV.”
n absorb food better: Fermented food helps you absorb
more nutrients, since they have the ideal balance of gut bacteria and digestive enzymes. Mansi explains, “Food will get absorbed easily if you have value-added probiotic culture present in your gut.” n Preserves food easily: Lacto-fermentation allows you to store fermented food for longer periods without losing out on nutrients, as you would with canned food. “Fermented food can be stored for longer. For example, homemade salsa only lasts for a few days in the fridge, but fermented homemade salsa can last for months. The same goes for pickled carrots and other garden ingredients,” adds Mansi. n Cost effective: Fermented food is budget friendly as you can make it at home. Adding fermented dishes to your diet can also cut down on the number of supplements you need, helping to reduce your monthly expenses. Mansi says, “Healthy food is usually expensive, but fermented food is pretty cost effective.”
« Know more Cinnamon promotes fertility
You may be aware that there are certain ingredients that increase your chances of conceiving and cinnamon is the latest to emerge as a promoter of fertility. Sara Shah explains how this works
W
e’re not saying that this is a sure shot way to get pregnant, but recent studies suggest that consuming cinnamon can boost fertility, especially if you’ve been affected by hormonal disorders such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It can also improve your chances of conception. Several studies have concluded that regular intake of cinnamon can help kick-start and remedy irregular menstrual cycles amongst women who suffer from this disorder. A recent study, which was conducted by Columbia University Medical Center, revealed that something as simple as spicing up your meal with cinnamon can
make a difference. For the study, 11 women were given cinnamon supplements for six months, while another group of women was given placebo pills (an ineffectual treatment that is used during experiments), for the same amount of time. All of the women who were part of the study suffered from infertility and irregular periods. Over a period of six months, the women taking cinnamon supplements experienced a change in the duration of menstruation. Their periods increased to four times as compared to the two times for women who were taking the placebo. And to top it all off, two of the women taking the supplements even got pregnant!
But, how does cinnamon work? Well, for years, it has been believed to be a spice that regulates glucose and insulin levels in diabetic patients. PCOS is known to occur due to an insensitivity towards hormonal insulin and poor glucose control. And, since cinnamon reduces this insulin resistance, it can decrease the effect of PCOS! However, it’s not the sole cure for PCOS or infertility. Both require major lifestyle changes and cinnamon can only help speed up the process. If you still need a confirmation on the benefits of cinnamon, consult your doctor before increasing your intake, but we assure you that it is a pretty harmless step, with very few side effects.

« 10 ways to:
Wear a mask If you’re paranoid or extremely anxious that you may catch swine flu, you can wear a mask while you go about your regular routine. However, you shouldn’t neglect other remedial measures such a washing your hands. Also remember that masks are not 100% effective against swine flu.
Get 40 winks Make sure you get enough sleep. This will ensure that your immune system is strong enough to combat illnesses in general and will reduce your chances of contracting the flu. It is recommended that you get 7-8 hours of sleep every night to ensure that your immune system is at its best.
3
2
Avoid crowded places Flu viruses such as the H1N1 spread very easily through crowds. So, try to avoid large gatherings and crowded places as far as possible, or try and spend as little time as you can in a crowded place.
4
Protect yourself from swine flu
5
Stay warm The H1N1 virus, like other flu viruses, thrives in the cold. It can survive for longer periods outside the body when the temperatures are low. Try and avoid the early morning and late evening cold in order to reduce your chances of catching swine flu.
Use a hand sanitiser If you don’t have access to soap and water through the day, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser instead. However, make sure that it contains at least 60% alcohol. Get proper exercise Getting proper exercise is also crucial to help keep your immune system strong. A sedentary lifestyle can lower your immune response, making you susceptible to the flu and other illnesses. However, over exercising can push your body beyond its limits and harm your immune system. So, make sure that you get the right balance of moderate exercise.
Swine flu spreads the same way as the flu does and can also spread through contact with surfaces such as tables and doorknobs. Anindra Siqueira tells you how to protect yourself against the virus, which is back in India, but remember to visit your doctor if you suffer from any of the symptoms Cook meats properly It’s true that swine flu comes from pigs (it can spread from pigs to humans), but as long as the pork that you eat has been handled and cooked properly (at a temperature close to 72°C), it is safe to eat.
7
6
Hands off The swine flu virus spreads through contact. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as you can get infected by the virus through these pathways.
Maintain a balanced diet Maintaining a balanced diet is important, as it boosts your immune system and prepares it to fight infections.
>> Every time your friends force you to order fast food, you should insist on eating at home
10
9 8
Wash your hands Remember to wash your hands with soap and water on a regular basis. This is sufficient to kill the germs that cause swine flu as the surfactants present in soap damage the lipid protective coating of the virus.

Mostly As When you have been trying to lose weight and your friends provide no motivation, it’s time to surround yourself with healthier people. So, the next time your friend suggests that you go out to eat, tell him/ her that you’d rather eat at home. If you two have decided to work out, go to the gym alone or tell them that you’d like to chat only when you aren’t completely distracted by your intense workout. And, if your friends insist that you drink alcohol at a party, hold that glass or bottle in your hand and just pretend to sip every now and then. Your friend will just assume that you like to take your own sweet time when you’re drinking. Mostly Bs Your friends understand that you need to keep yourself healthy and mostly, they lead a healthy lifestyle themselves. And if that isn’t the case, they are considerate enough to let you do what you want to do. However, you don’t need to disappoint your friends by sticking to your rigorous diet every time they plan to go out.
Turning older every year, getting wrinkles and losing physical strength are factors that you cannot control. But, what you can control is how you lead your life, and that has a major impact on how young you feel. Read on to find out how you can keep your mind sharp and active in order to ensure that you don’t allow ageing to get yo you.
— age is just a number. We may sound like lifestyle coaches, but you’d be surprised to find that according to a study, people who believed in that statement were able to perform a larger variety of physical and mental activities as compared to other people of the same age, who had negative thoughts about ageing.

You may not be able to go on that mountaineering trip that you went on in your 20s, but you can still go on a low-intensity nature trail right? Do what your body permits you to do — round up a few friends and go on a biking trip, or simply sign up for a dance workshop. Also, remember that there’s no need to surround yourself with mobility aids, unless you absolutely need to. All it’s going to do is make you feel old. Instead, stay active by improvising and slowly building strength and endurance.

This applies to those who are retired or not working — having a hobby is important. But, while a general hobby will keep you occupied, choosing an activity that’s from the same field that
you built your career in is a simple way to avoid feeling depressed about having passed your prime.
Thinking long-term is great, but remember that you also need to have short-term, or even better, yearly, goals. Simply making a list of things that you want to do this year will keep your mind occupied. Apart from making you feel young, it will also help you to lead a purposeful life.

One of the biggest ways that you’re contributing to your mental ageing is by believing in negative stereotypes about it. In fact, a study conducted in the USA found that people who were exposed to positive stereotypes about age performed as well as teenagers on a memory test. So, avoid reading the lengthy blog posts about how age hampers your ability to lead a fruitful life and instead, simply believe in this one statement
Not being able to lift weights or constantly contracting a disease — age certainly affects your medical and physical state. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything about it. Take better care of yourself than you did when you were young. Draw up a routine to increase your strength, make a diet plan that will help to prevent infections and diseases — staying healthy is one of the easiest ways to feel young.

BacKward running
Once a popular sport, running backwards has several health and fitness benefits. Dev Goswami tells you more
T
he next time you’re walking or jogging and see someone running backwards, don’t stop in awe — they’re only trying to increase their fitness while reducing their risk of suffering from injuries. Backward running was once a popular sport, with competitive races being held in UK. While the fad of racing while running in reverse didn’t last long, backward running, which is also called retro running, has been a steady fitness trend for a few years now. In fact, in the book Backwards Running (a free PDF of which is available on the website, www.wackynation.com), author Dr. Robert K Stevenson claims that retro running can help to boost your stamina, strengthen your leg muscles, make you faster, enhance balance and add variety to your workout. A study conducted by Cardiff University also found that as compared to conventional runners, retro runners exert 24% less stress on their knees, which can help to prevent injuries and dislocations in the long run. This is because when you’re running backwards, you land on the balls of your feet, which is a much softer motion than landing on your heels, which is what happens when you’re running forward. Another study suggests though it is safer, backward running is more intense for your body and so, can help you to burn calories faster and more effectively.
do it right
Compared to most workout trends, there aren’t too many disadvantages of backward running. In fact, the only risk you’re putting yourself at is falling down, because you aren’t alert enough or straining your neck because you’re trying to look back. So, it’s important to pick a safe location if you want to run backwards. There shouldn’t be any potholes or surprising bumps along the way and the area should be devoid of people as well. Start off slowly — running backwards doesn’t mean that you can’t run at a quicker pace, but don’t aim for speed during your first few attempts. Begin by running small distances to figure out how your body moves and make sure that you’re pushing yourself with the balls of your feet. Finally, remember never to attempt this on a treadmill — if something goes wrong, your hands won’t be anywhere near the control panel, putting you at a serious risk of falling down! >> Backward running reduces the risk of injuries

hile you may have a general idea of how and when to breathe when you’re working out, it doesn’t mean that your regular breathing pattern is working well for the rest of your routine. You need to pay attention to your breathing pattern throughout your workout, and learn how to control your breath in order to avoid breathing mistakes that can render a workout ineffective. The same breathing techniques don’t apply to all workouts — you have to change them according to the different stages in your routine. While a trainer will be able to give you the best advice, we’re helping you to stay prepared with a short guide for a few common exercises. Take a look.
When you’re lifting Weights Lifting weights helps you to get a toned body, with better muscle strength. When you’re lifting weights, inhale on the lighter bits and hold your breath for a short while as you approach the hardest part of the exercise. Once you’ve completed it, exhale again. However, this can raise your blood pressure, so it isn’t recommended for people who suffer from cardiovascular problems.
>> While running, inhale for three seconds and then exhale for two, to feel less tired
When you’re doing ab exercises To get the perfect abs, it’s important to breathe right when you’re performing abdominal exercises. For example, when you’re doing crunches, exhale on your way towards your knees and inhale on your way down to the starting position.
When you’re doing plyometrics When you’re performing strengthening moves such as jumping on a box, you need to hold your breath briefly to help stabilise your body. So, hold your breath
Breathe it out Breathing right while working out contributes to effective performance, leading to quick results. But, not all of us are aware of how to do this. Yamini Walia helps with some tips
every time you make contact with the floor in order to make your body more rigid.
When you’re doing cardio You’re at the highest risk of suffering from an injury when you’re doing cardio exercises such as running or jogging. Instead of breathing in an even pattern, inhale for three seconds and exhale for two. Even though this will demand some serious concentration at first, research shows that running is most effective when you start exhaling the minute that your foot touches the ground.
When you’re stretching Stretching requires you to loosen up

completely. Remember that you need to focus on breathing in deeply. This will relax your muscles, helping you to stretch better and lowering your risk of suffering from an injury , because as you won’t pull any muscles. Breathe out in the same manner.
When you’re in the recovery phase After you’ve finished a strenuous workout, you will probably be huffing and puffing. This happens because your body needs oxygen to replete its energy. To prevent this, practice diaphragmatic breathing between sets, as it helps you to draw more oxygen into your lungs, which in turn helps you to perform the next exercise better. Try to focus on filling and emptying your abdomen with each breath rather than just raising and lowering your chest.

everal diseases have been named after prominent physicians, who played a vital role in their discovery. Some are even named after animals — think mad cow and swine flu. But, did you know how many are named after, as well as linked to, cities?! If you read this page last week, you may have read about the Jerusalem syndrome (where people are so overwhelmed by the significance of this religious city, that they think of themselves as a messiah), and you won’t be surprised to find that there are more! We’re telling you a little bit about some of the most interesting ones.
>> The statue of David in Florence has led to several cases of fainting
Stockholm Syndrome Undoubtedly the most well-known city-based syndrome, this one has even been showcased in several films. Also known as capturebonding, Stockholm syndrome sees the victims of hostage or kidnapping situations form a bond with their captors — there have been cases in which victims assist, and even defend their captors. The phenomenon originated in 1973, during a bank robbery in Stockholm. The robbery, which is known as the Norrmalmstorg robbery (after the city square where the bank was located), saw bank employees sympathising with the robbers. It is believed that a lack of violent behaviour on the captor/ abductors’ part is perceived as an act of kindness, leading the victim to empathise with their captors.
PariS Syndrome The perfect example of why you shouldn’t romanticise a concept, person or even place, is the Paris syndrome. First observed amongst Japanese tourists and later seen among the Chinese, the syndrome causes visitors to descend into a state of anxiety and distress when they come face-to-face with the gritty side of this dreamy French city. The reason for such emotional upheaval is believed to be the idealistic notions of Paris that tourists have because of how the city is portrayed in films and the media. However, coming across the city’s social problems, including its famed unfriendly locals, is like a rude shock — so much so, that the Japanese embassy in Paris is reported to run a 24-hour hotline in order to help tourists deal with the cultural shock.
lima Syndrome The Lima syndrome sees the captors sympathise with their victims. Not many instances of this phenomenon have been reported and the term was coined after a hostage crisis in a Japanese embassy in Lima, where the hostage-takers curiously set several hostages free because they felt sorry for them.
Florence Syndrome Imagine coming across beauty that makes you feel dizzy — and we mean that literally. The Florence syndrome, which is also known as Stendhal syndrome, sees a victim suffer from a rapid heartbeat, vertigo,

fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when they come across large amounts of classical art or natural beauty. Florence, which houses numerous classical artworks and installations, sees several such instances, especially when people come across the statue of David.
india Syndrome Yes, our country has its very own syndrome — though it’s not something you’d be proud of. Ever since the English rock band, The Beatles, visited India in the late ’60s, westerners have been flocking to the country to seek enlightenment. However, a
few of them have mysteriously disappeared, or have been found dead. Travel forums are abuzz with the power and appeal of spirituality, which, several people believe, causes tourists to give up their worldly possessions in search of true enlightenment.

Dear Barbara, Off late, my eyelashes have started shedding more than usual. I never had this problem, but I’ve suddenly noticed that my lashes look very thin and every day I come across as many as 10-12 fallen lashes on my cheek! I am at a complete loss about what’s causing the problem and I am quite worried about it. What can I do? — sujata Khurana, Bandra Dear sujata, Just like the hair on your head, eyelashes too shed naturally. However, what you’ve described is an unnaturally large amount of shedding. Your best course of action would be to visit a dermatologist. The reason we can’t give you a specific plan of action is because eyelash shedding can be caused by a variety of factors. These can range from ageing and allergic reactions to infections or a poor diet. Before you visit a dermatologist, think about whether you’ve been applying a new type or brand of eye makeup — if you have, then it may be causing an allergic reaction, making your eyelashes fall. If not, visiting your dermatologist is your best bet.
eyeliD glue Eyelid glue is meant for those who want eyelids without a crease. The glue is painted on the upper eyelid, and then your skin is pushed upward with a plastic prong and held in place by the adhesive. “These are usually water soluble and contain herbal extracts as well as moisturising factors that hydrate your skin and glue it together. However there have been several cases of irritant contact dermatitis because of the glue, especially among those who are atopic and allergy prone,” warns Dr. Goel.

>> Leftover wax can irritate your skin. So, make sure to clean it up Dear Barbara, I have strangely sensitive skin. And I say that it is strange, because it is only my upper lip! Every time I wax or thread my upper lip it becomes red and starts itching incessantly. The rest of my skin is absolutely normal, which is why I don’t understand why this happens. The most annoying part is that it remains red all day long and I don’t know what to do about it. Please help! — roohi mistry, Colaba Dear roohi, This is not as strange as you think it is. In fact, redness and irritation after waxing your upper lip is quite common. First of all, you need to ensure that all the wax has been removed completely. Leftover wax is one of the primary reasons for irritated skin. Remember to avoid applying makeup immediately after waxing, because it can irritate your skin. You can also apply aloe vera or tea tree-based lotions, both of which will soothe your skin and reduce the redness.
glow to your skin. Dr. Goel does accept some of the benefits for this one. “Such treatments are effective for people who are looking to rejuvenate as they stimulate collagen synthesis and are a good antiageing treatment. Also, the treatment contains botanical stem cells, which promote hair growth,” she explains. However, we suggest you proceed with caution, because it isn’t exactly pain-free.
eople will now leave no stone unturned to achieve what they define as beauty. This has led to the birth of several strange trends and products that are plaguing the beauty front, taking quirkiness to a whole new level. The list of beauty fads is endless, so take a look at some of these weird, outrageous beauty products, which are anything but normal. We also got Dr. Apratim Goel, a cosmetic dermatologist and laser surgeon at Cutis Skin Studio, to give us an expert view on the efficacy of these beauty products.
3g of collagen peptides. Made to smoothen out your wrinkles and plump fine lines, these marshmallows consist mainly of sugar. Dr. Goel suggests keeping these at arm’s-length because of their unhealthy composition of sugar and gelatin. She says, “These were created by the Japanese, who believe that a reduction in our body’s sugar levels is the reason for wrinkles and ageing skin. Since marshmallows are full of carbohydrates and sugars, they’re supposed to stimulate collagen synthesis. However, its effects are yet to be proven.”
Vagina Dye
Vampire faCials
As if menstruation and child birth weren’t enough, we now have to worry about how pretty our vaginas look! The market is saturated with dyes that are specially formulated for pubic area and are available in two different forms. While one variant is available in multiple hues and is dedicated to changing the colour of your pubic hair, the other changes the shade of the skin around your genitals to a youthful pink. Dr. Goel considers its efficiency debatable. She tells us, “Such dyes are temporary, and their effects fade away after a few washes. Since the skin around your vagina is delicate, they can cause irritation, especially for postmenopausal women and those who have dry skin issues.” If your vagina is healthy and hasn’t suddenly changed colour, we think it can do without this!
This is quite a gory procedure, which requires your own blood to be injected into your face with a syringe. Touted by several celebrities as a miracle solution, vampire facials are believed to impart a youthful
Vaginal DouChes If it isn’t the look of your vagina, it’s the smell! Vaginal douching involves washing or soaking your vagina in a mixture of water and vinegar. But, now you can also purchase cosmetic douching solutions, which contain antiseptics and fragrances and are sprayed into your vagina with a tube. From what we’ve heard, they sound quite harmful. “Since the vagina has a certain pH level, it should not be disturbed by excessive washing. Douching can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and various other infections,” says Dr. Goel, confirming our scepticism.
Breast separators Skin wrinkling is a natural process that occurs as you grow older. But, the beauty industry is more than adamant about slowing this process down. You can now buy breast separators, which, when placed between your breasts while you sleep, prevent cleavage wrinkles. Dr Goel is a bit unsure, telling us, “Since they haven’t been introduced in the Indian market yet, it is hard to comment on their effectiveness. However, they will definitely play a role in wrinkle prevention, since they are designed to reduce gravitational stress.”
snail slime proDuCts Disgusting as it may sound, these products have been flying off the shelves and their makers claim it’s for good reason. Snail goop is known to contain natural acids and elastin that will impart a glow on to your skin. To our surprise, Dr. Goel confirms their effectiveness, telling us “Snail goop contains active moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and elastin, all of which hydrate your skin.” Well, if she’s has given us the green signal, who are we to stop you?
Collagen marshmallows Collagen marshmallows, which originated in Japan (no surprises here!), are currently a rage in UK. As the name suggests, they are marshmallows that have been infused with

By A Business Reporter
T
he Reserve Bank may cut key interest rates as early as this week, as the fiscal measures announced in the Union Budget are unlikely to disturb the "disinflation" trend, say analysts. According to global financial services firm Morgan Stanley, "The budget does not have any measures that would disturb the current entrenched disinflation trend." "We maintain our view that RBI will cut policy rates by 125 bps by the end of 2015 with the next move coming as early as this week," Morgan Stanley's Asia economist
Chetan Ahya said in a research note. With the budget now out of the way, investors' attention will revert to the government's effort to implement more critical policy reforms, he said. Rolling out a new fiscal consolidation road-map, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said in the Budget that fiscal deficit would be brought down to 3.9% of GDP in 2015- 16, and then further to 3.6% and finally to 3% by 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively, reports PTI. Meanwhile, HSBC in a research report said the higher fiscal stimulus in the budget is expected to restrict any further monetary policy accommo-
dation. "We stick to our call of 50 bps additional repo rate cuts, with the first cut coming in the April meeting," HSBC Chief India Economist Pranjul Bhandari said. Bank of America Merrill Lynch said, "We reiterate our call that Budget 2015-16 will lead to lower rates to support recovery." "We continue to expect the RBI to cut policy rates by 25 bps on April 7 (and June) with the Budget meeting his pre-condition of fiscal consolidation and inflation set on his 6% January 2016 target," BofA-ML added. DBS Bank said, "We continue to expect another 50 bps of cuts by end-June but believe the odds of an inter-meeting cut in March are low."
Commenting on the budget, Nomura said that "overall, the budget is neither populist nor very reformist, in our view, and it reinforces the view that the government’s approach to reforms will be incremental rather than in a big bang". On policy rates, Nomura said, "We continue to expect a 25 bps repo rate cut on 7 April to 7.50%, followed by an extended period on hold until 2016." "Overall, the Budget is a pragmatic vision and a roadmap for the future. This coupled with the Railway Budget seems a well concerted move by the Government to sustain the existing momentum," SBI said.
Budget Will Push Domestic Demand: Yashwant Sinha By A Business Reporter
T
he Budget, by giving push to infrastructure spending, would lift domestic demand through the virtuous cycle”, said Yashwant Sinha, Former Union Minister for Finance and External Affairs, at an interactive meeting jointly organized by MVIRDC World Trade Centre and the All India Association of Industries.“The Union Budget 2015-16 is expected to create a virtuous cycle as the huge infrastructure investment proposal of the Government would spur private sector investment and consumption in the overall economy,” said Sinha. He explained that the recessionary trend in the Japanese, Eurozone economies and the slowdown in the Chinese economy would depress global demand. “This would in turn force Indian companies to depend on domestic demand,” he added. Hoping that this budget would encourage savings in the economy, Sinha raised concern about the decline in the savings rate in the economy from 37% (as a proportion of
the hands of the people, which would create inflation,” he said. Sinha expects the fall in WPI and CPI to prompt RBI to reduce interest rate by 50 basis point units in its next monetary policy review. He also raised concerns about the huge delay in implementation of Projects on account of hassles such as land acquisition and environmental clearances. While various measures were announced to give a major thrust to boost funding to the infrastructure sector,Sinha felt that the government’s plug and play concept would address these hassles in the days ahead. However Sinha expressed disappointments on some aspects of the budget such as the multiplier effect From (L-R) : Sharad Upasani, Vice Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre presenting a of investments in the realty sector, memento to Yashwant Sinha, Former Union Minister, Finances and External Affairs, he said that the rise in the tax exGovernment of India alongwith Vijay Kalantri, Vice-Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre emption limit for interest rate on and President, All India Association of Industries and Capt . utual fund companies have lined up nearly three dozen New Fund Offers (NFO) and have filed draft documents for them with market regulator Sebi pursuant to a rally in the stock market. The documents for 34 New Fund Offers (NFOs) have been submitted with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) since the beginning of the year and the schemes will be opened for subscription soon after the necessary clearances. Of these 34, two draft offers have been filed so far this month, while 19 papers submitted in February and the other 13 were filed in January. Some of these NFOs have already been launched after getting regulatory clearances. ICICI Prudential MF, Reliance MF, SBI MF, UTI MF and HDFC MF are among the fund houses that are offering NFOs to investors.
A large number of these schemes are aimed at investment in equity and equity-related securities. Manufacturing, retirement, economic recovery, resurgence of the business cycle and e-commerce are some of the themes that are attracting mutual fund houses. A number of fund houses are expected to come up with more schemes that will invest in equity and equity-related securities to take benefit from the rising stock market. According to market participants, MF houses are rushing towards Sebi to launch new schemes on account of good response received from investors in the recent fund launches. Also, they said that the NFO market has picked up as the investors' confidence about equity markets is back and participation from retail investors is also on the upswing. The benchmark BSE Sensex has risen by 7% this year so far.

"By minute 15, 91% can make out if the candidate is eligible for the job," the survey said. About 70% employers felt that failing to make eye contact was
the biggest mistake made by a job seeker during an interview followed by 56% who identified as having bad posture as a fault. Other bad body language mistakes by candidates are, playing with something on the table (45%), failing to smile (44%), having a weak handshake (44%), fidgeting too much in their seat (35%), crossing their arms over their chest (35%). Playing with their hair or touching their face (31%), using too many hand gestures (31%), having a handshake that is too strong (23%). "Acing the job interview isn't just about how you answer the interviewer's questions," CareerBuilder Chief Human Resource Officer Rosemary Haefner said. "It's also about what your body language says about you. Employers are looking for those non-verbal cues to indicate a candidate's level of professionalism and if they will be the right fit for the position," Haefner added. Piano is an asset for Hindustani music too

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2015
By Amarendra Dhaneshwar
T
he piano is an instrument of Western origin. The character of its sound is staccato. Hindustani music is known for a sound that is continuous and without breaks. Does that mean that the piano stands ruled out as far as Hindustani music is concerned? Not at all would be the answer if one listens to the pianist, Deepak Shah who has been performing Hindustani music on this instrument over the years. Shah was featured in a concert by the Bhavan's Cultural Centre at the Sardar Patel College Quadrangle with his group of musicians last Saturday. The title of the concert was 'Raga Symphony'. Shah and his ensemble played to an audience which was literally rocking with excitement with music lovers who cheered him for his excellent command of the instrument
and treatment of the ragas. It is not as if Shah is the first pianist of this genre of music. We have heard V. Balsara who was pioneer in this field. We have also heard Adnan Sami who was a pianist before he became a pop singer crooning 'Lift Kara De'. Shah's takes his craft and art quite seriously and can get to the
essence of the raga spirit with his nimble fingers. He and his ensemble played the ragas like 'Yaman', 'Todi', 'Bhimpalasi', 'Shudhsarang' etc and the thumri immortalised by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. His raga rendering was flawless and his 'Yaad Piyaki Aaye' was indeed evocative. It was an altogether different
experience to listen to this thumri being played on the piano. He was accompanied on the tabla by Shreedhar Chari. Among other musicians who participated in the programme were violinist Bharat Shah, sitarist Umashankar Shukla and Madhav Pawar on pakhavaj . Santoor maestro Ulhas Bapat has written a book entitled 'Swaratun Manatale' published by 'Maitreya Prakashan' about his life and music which was released with fanfare at a well attended function at Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre. The book was released at the hands of composer Ashok Patki and sitarist Shankar Abhyankar. Writer Achyut Godbole also spoke on the occasion. Bapat played some complex melodies based on ragas like 'Yaman', 'Kalavati' etc to the accompaniment of Prasad Padhye on the tabla and Kamlesh Bhadkamkar on the keyboard.
Three festivals merge to enthrall with classical dance performances By Vijay Shanker
S
arfojiraje Bhosale Centre in association with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs and with the support of Ministry of Culture, Government of India, organised Triveni Shastriya Nritya Samaroha series featuring three festivals, namely Kinikini, Sanskriti and Kala Avishkar at the mini P.L. Deshpande auditorium. It was truly a thrill to watch talented dancers dancing varied classical dance styles with lot of excitement and enthusiasm. About 20 dancers in different styles performed in the Kinkini festival, the dancers who excelled in the festival were Harini Jeevitha, Deepesh Hoskare, Akshay Ayre, Vinodini Hasal, Pushkara Deochake and Debasish Patnaik. Harini is the disciple of Guru Sheela Unnikrishnan, her performance was marked with excellent rhythmic clarity and spontaneous movements that kept the audience enthralled which was evident in the number Kondinadan Adinar featuring the magnificence of the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva. The "Akash charis" and the "karanas" definitely

he classic V.V. Shirwadkar play, ‘Natasamrat’ first staged in the seventies with many great actors like Shreeram Lagoo, Datta Bhat, etc playing the central character of a stage thespian actor in his end years named Appasaheb Belwalkar who faces ignominy from his own children and relatives is being adapted for a film version by actor director Mahesh Man-
jrekar with maverick actor Nana Patekar playing the central character of Belwalkar with Reema Lagoo as his wife along with supporting actors Sunil Barve, Neha Pendse, Medha Manjrekar, music director Ajit Parab among others. The film is produced by Great Maratha Entertainment and Fincraft Entertainment and Gajanan Chitra. Nana is a producer too debuting with this film along with Vinayak
Joshi and Mahesh Manjrekar. The film’s grand mahurat was held at the Kusumagraza Pratishthan in Nashik headed by great litterateur Madhu Mangesh Karnik. Speaking at the mahurat, Nana said, “I was just 20 years old when I first saw the play staged by Dr. Sriram Lagoo and I was amazed by the play and it stayed with me and I felt that an actor is incomplete without playing the iconic character of Appasaheb Belwalkar.
deserve a special mention. Deepesh Hoskare's complete involvement and sincerity was well appreciated by the audience. Deepesh is the disciple of Guru Ratheesh Babu from Bhilai. Akshay's lively performance with accuracy and clarity of movements created a lasting impression. Vinodini Hasal is the 9th generation of the Jaipur Gharana and is the granddaughter of veteran kathak meastro Guru Ganesh Hiralal Hasal and daughter of Dr Vinod Hasal. Vinodini is different from the normal Kathak dancers as she dances with rare grace and poise that creates a fine visual impact which was quite evident in the Chautaal Tandav nritya featuring the magnificent dance of Lord Shiva. Pushkara Deochake is the charming disciple of Dr Sandhya Purecha, her command over the technique of Bhrata natyam and her flair for expressions were noteworthy, Odissi is the classical dance which is appreciated for its graceful and lyrical quality further accentuated by talented dancer Debasish Patnaik, who proves the point that male dancers can definitely be graceful.
IN BRIEF GLORIOUS LEGACY OF WOMEN
At a time when women empowerment, feminism and other women oriented philosophies are eternally doing the rounds of all thinking circuits, ‘Stree Shakti’ stands testimony to its relevance. Art is no exception to the relevance of this philosophy. No description of any art form can be considered complete without the mention of women artists. Be it music, dance, painting or literature, women artists are equal partners of their male counterparts in their journey of glory. 'Stree Shakti' celebrates this glorious legacy of women by featuring Mandeera Manish (Bharata natyam) and Anuradha Pal’s Stree Shakti Band, an all-women percussion band on March 7, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi.

Birmingham: After a win early in the season at Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold, top Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap will now look to chase their dream at the prestigious All England Championship that gets underway with the qualifiers here today. After a good season in 2014 where she scooped three
titles -- India Open, Australian Open and China Open, Saina began the new season with a bang clinching the Syed Modi title at Lucknow and she will look to continue her good run. The World No. 3 Indian reached the semifinals in 2010 and 2013 but could not cross the last-four hurdle.
"I have never won the All England. I did reach the semis but could not go further. So I will try my best to improve my performance this year. It has always been a dream to win this title," Saina told PTI. "I won at Indonesia, Denmark and China but this is one Super Series Premier event which I would love to win."

Some would say to do this and others will say to do that. The boxers are confused and they don't know what to do. Unless there is unity, we will not get anything. Boxers are the only sufferers."

IRELAND FACE DE VILLIERS THREAT
IN WC CLASH AGAINST PROTEAS C AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER l www.afternoondc.in
anberra: On a roll after two wins, Ireland will face their biggest challenge of tackling a rampaging AB de Villiers when they clash against South Africa in a pool B match of the cricket World Cup here today. With victories over the West Indies and UAE, Ireland have so far proved that they are no pushovers but their dreams of making it to
PREVIEW the knockout stage will face a tough test against South Africa. It is mighty de Villiers, who poses the biggest threat, especially after his annihilation of the West Indies bowlers with a 66-ball 162run knock which was studded with 17 fours and eight sixes in Sydney. Pre-tournament favourites South Africa's 257-run win against the West Indies has boosted their campaign after
campaign on track. The fact that Ireland comfortably chased down a huge 304-run target against the West Indies with four wickets and 25 balls to spare will give them a lot of confidence. Ireland batsmen -- Paul Stirling (92), Ed Joyce (84) and Niall O'Brien (79 not out), too got runs under their belt during the victory over the West Indies and they will look to pose a good total if they get a chance to bat first at the batting friendly Manuka Oval wicket. For South Africa, poor form of their pace spearhead Dale Steyn is a big worry even though leg-spinner Imran Tahir have made himself counted with nine wickets so far in the tournament. Afghanistan no surprise for New Zealand coach
A
uckland: New Zealand coach Mike Hesson insisted that the high-flying Black Caps will pay Afghanistan the utmost respect having tracked the Asian minnows' astonishing progress at close range. Hesson briefly coached Kenya in 2011 and 2012 with the African side coming up against the Afghans in second-tier events. The 40-year-old will renew his rivalry with them in the World Cup in Napier on Sunday. "They have three guys who bowl over 140km/h and
they can swing it," he said of quicks Shapoor Zadran, Dawlat Zadran and Hamid Hassan. "Generally, their batsmen don't die wondering. It should be a good contest. We have to show them due respect and make sure we put in a good performance." New Zealand have won all four games in Pool A and have already secured their spot in the quarter-finals while Afghanistan can still gate-crash the last-eight, standing just a point behind Australia after losing to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka before edging Scotland by one wicket. Their next challenge is taking on four-time champions Australia in Perth on Wednesday. "We'll do our scouting on Afghanistan and we'll prepare the best we can. We've still got a lot to achieve in the next few weeks," said Hesson, whose team secured their quarter-final spot on Saturday with a nail-biting one-wicket win over Australia in Auckland.
Mountain fires worry Steyn ahead of landmark match
C
anberra: South African fast bowler Dale Steyn plays his 100th one-day international on Tuesday looking to regain top form despite being distracted by mountain fires raging near his home in Cape Town. "Massive fire behind my house in Stonehurst! Plz be safe and watch out for the mountain animals trying to escape it, porcupines, tortoises." Steyn tweeted. Team-mate Faf du Plessis had the same worries too, tweeting "Crazy mountain fire near my new house. Hope they can stop the fire before it does more damage." Steyn was slated to address the pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday's Pool B match against Ireland at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, but was replaced by Farhaan Behardien at the last minute. The 31-year-old Steyn, who was down with flu a few days before the start of theWorld Cup, has managed just one wicket in each of South Africa's first three matches against Zim-

"Of course it does affect you in some sort of way, but we have quite a strong support structure around us, the people, the friends and the family that's here," Behardien said. There are small pickings for one of the most destructive fast bowlers in the modern game and Steyn will be needed to be at his best if South Africa are to have a shot at their maiden World Cup title. Behardien was confident the mountain fires were not going to stop either Steyn or

Australia’s Maxwell mocked for Kiwi ‘choke’ gesture
Sydney: Australia's Glenn Maxwell was both mocked and praised today after video emerged of him making a 'choking' gesture just moments before Kane Williamson launched the giant six that won Saturday's World Cup clash for New Zealand. Maxwell, a controversial batsman dubbed 'The Big Show' by Australian media, was fielding in the deep when he turned to a section of the 40,000 crowd at Auckland's Eden Park and jokingly placed his hands around his throat to suggest that the home side were about to fail chasing their modest 152-run target. But the Kiwis, who had lost five wickets for 15 at one stage, had the last laugh and claimed a place in the quarter-finals when, with the last pair at the wicket, Williamson sent his match-winning six high into the stands. The video clip was uploaded to Facebook by New Zealand fan Sam Holt and by today afternoon had attracted more than 173,000 views, liked by 65,000 people and shared 3,000 times. "This was Maxwell just before Kane Williamson tonked that 6 to win it... How's that for crowd / player banter?," wrote Holt. Maxwell scored just one in the game having made 66 in Australia's opening win over England, but he won some sympathy online with fans praising him for his interaction with the crowd. "I sat right behind maxwell and he was awesome. So interactive with the crowd and with a real good sense of humour! Def a good sportsman," wrote one spectator. "To be fair we were trying pretty hard to choke lol," added another fan.
FEW GOOD TRAINING DAYS BETTER 31

India are big tournament team: Hogg
Perth: Former Australia left-arm spinner Brad Hogg is in awe of the current Indian cricket team's fielding abilities and feels the defending champions are a "big tournament team" and have become the favourites to lift the World Cup. "The thing which impressed me most about India is their fielding. The time when I was playing we really felt we can get some extra runs on the field, we can take them on in the boundary," Hogg said. "But we saw against South Africa the other night, they had two crucial run outs of (AB) de Villiers and (David) Miller and turn the game around. It took the game away from South Africa. "That extra pressure on the field is going to help their bowlers and batters. That's why I feel they are starting to become the favourites for the World Cup." Hogg said India, with three consecutive wins so far, have gotten over the setback of their disappointing Australia tour that preceded the World Cup. "They (India) are big tournament team. I think they probably have settled down," said Hogg.
P
erth: Indian team's irregular sessions may have surprised many but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni feels that it is better to do three days of "high intensity" training rather than six days of "mediocre" workout to keep fresh in a marathon tournament like the cricket World Cup. The Indian team practiced two out four days days (travelling day is used for training) in between their matches against South Africa and UAE. The same two-trainingdays out of the available five days is being used by Dhoni and Co for their match against West Indies at the WACA on Friday. "What we're doing is dividing the workload, trying to practice on alternative days. Three days of high-intensity practice is better than six days of mediocre practice," Dhoni made it clear after the UAE match as to what exactly his views are on everyday net sessions. In fact whatever the Indian skipper said made a lot of sense. The team has played at all the venues since the start of the Test series and there won't be any major change in the character of wickets in a space of few weeks which would need them to do any special or extensive homework. "If you extend the Australia series till World Cup, it's a four-five month tour on the whole. If you talk of conditions, then we know everything about the conditions. We've played at almost all the venues so we know how the
Ravichandran Ashwin troubled the UAE batsmen with turn and bounce during the Pool B league match. wickets behave," Dhoni was categorical in his observation about the rest days that have been interspersed between some of the training sessions. For Dhoni, it is important that the team remains "mentally fresh" for a seven week tournament. "When you're constantly playing cricket, then what matters more than net sessions is rest especially, when you're playing a long series. Being mentally fresh is very important. We're mixing it. Even an off day is only an off
day on the field. We do gymnasium or pool sessions or try to play a bit of tennis – all these things to keep ourselves fresh,"
TEAM TALK Dhoni explained. During their 2011 triumph, Team India had beautifully phased their campaign and peaked at the right time and Dhoni, with some unavoidable 'tweaks', wants to follow the same pattern.
"The attempt will be to do the same thing (pacing their campaign) but not everything always goes according to plan. When new challenges crop up, you need to be ready for them. All our plans, our practice sessions, maintaining fitness -everything has so far gone well for us," the skipper sounded satisfied. The main focus for Dhoni right now is to further improve upon their already impressive performance and maintaining the momentum
that they have gained. "As we enter the knockout stages, we'll need to improve our performance and maintain it," the skipper insisted. The skipper as usual sounded dismissive about popular opinions on training sessions and strategies going into the knock-out phase. "A lot of people have different opinions, but it's better if we don't pay heed to others' opinions and do what we feel within the team is right."
Kohli, Dhoni slide down; Shami gains 14 places in ODI rankings B
risbane: Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni slipped down the ladder to be fourth and 10th respectively, while Shikhar Dhawan retained his seventh spot in the latest ICC ODI batsmen's rankings released. In the ODI bowlers' chart, however, Indian pacer Mohammad Shami and Ravichandaran Ashwin made upward movements. While Shami gained as many as 14 places to be at 11th now, Ashwin's eight wickets in the ongoing cricket World Cup so far helped him climb six spots to 16th. There have been a plenty of reshuffle in the rankings at the end of 23 pool matches in

DALMIYA RETURNS AS BCCI PREZ, ANURAG THAKUR NEW SECRETARY

hennai: Veteran cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya was today unanimously elected President of the BCCI but the N Srinivasan camp suffered a huge setback with rival faction's Anurag Thakur beating Sanjay Patel for the post of Secretary at the Board's Annual General Meeting here today. Barring Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association chief Thakur's surprise win, ruling camp loyalists swept the elections for the other posts at the much-postponed AGM, where Srinivasan himself could not contest for the President's post owing to a Supreme Court directive. Jharkhand Cricket Association's Amitabha Chodhary was elected the Joint Secretary beating Goa's Chetan Desai, belonging to the antiSrinivasan faction, while Haryana's Anirudh Choudhary won the treasurer's position by defeating Rajiv Shukla. While three vice-Presidents were elected unopposed, the two other positions also went to the Srinivasan faction with T C Mathews (Kerala, west zone) and C K Khanna (Delhi, central zone) winning the polls. Wily old warhorse Dalmiya’s second-coming to BCCI pinnacle
K
olkata: Widely credited for making BCCI the world's richest Cricket Board, life has come full circle for veteran administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya, who returned to the top post after being forced out of the body close to a decade back. Expelled from the position in 2006, the 74-year-old was elected BCCI president in the Board's much-delayed 85th Annual General Meeting after Sharad Pawar pulled out of race failing to get a proposer from the East Zone. Dubbed the 'Asian Tiger' and master of the board game, who practically held all cricketing administrative positions after starting off as a treasurer in the Cricket Association of Bengal in 1978, Dalmiya went on to be the ICC President in March 1997 before leading BCCI from 2001-2004 before December 2006 ended his reign.
Accused of misappropriation of funds and a refusal to provide the relevant accounts and documents pertaining to a few cases, Dalmiya was expelled from the Indian board in a meeting in Jaipur An opening batsman and wicketkeeper during his early days, Dalmiya did not give up as he challenged the charges in the Bombay High Court and then at the Supreme Court of India. Finally he heaved a sigh of relief in July 2007, when the Calcutta High Court dismissed the charges against him. He was exonerated as the BCCI was unable to prove their charge of financial irregularities against him. After being allowed by the High Court to contest for the presidency of the Cricket Association of Bengal, Dalmiya silently made his return and has held the post with little challenge.
