T

he 25 marks that are awarded to the sports players in city schools for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) is being denied to students from Ashram schools. The games organised by the Ashram schools are not associated with the State Sport Directorate which qualifies the compensatory marks for the students. Around 4 lakh students from across the state are being denied these marks. The Ministry for Tribal Affairs started these Ashram schools in 1990 as residential schools for students falling under the Scheduled Tribes. Every year the state directorate of Maharastra organises sports competitions for school students. Those students who win in these competitions are awarded an extra 25 marks in the grand total of their final exam. As the Ashram school sports are not affiliated to the state directorate, these students are not eligi-

ble for those additional marks. President of the Maharastra Rakha Shikshak Parishad, Anil Bornare, said, "Ashram schools should be associated and affiliated to the State Sports Directorate so that even the tribal students can get the benefit of the marks". In all, the state has 552 government Ashram schools comprising 1.86 lakh students. It has 557 aided Ashram schools with 2.87 lakh students. A total of 3.98 lakh students are being denied the chance of being awarded these marks. The ADC spoke to Ramnath Mote, Member of Legislative Assembly, who said, “As the students from these Ashram schools and tribal regions are not awarded the additional 25 marks for sports, their final scores become less in the SSC exams. But these students win the events in which they participate. The State Sports Directorate should consider the Ashram schools under their purview.”
