he 25 marks that are awarded to the sports players in city schools for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) is being denied to students from Ashram schools. The games organised by the Ashram schools are not associated with the State Sport Directorate which qualifies the compensatory marks for the students. Around 4 lakh students from across the state are being denied these marks. The Ministry for Tribal Affairs started these Ashram schools in 1990 as residential schools for students falling under the Scheduled Tribes. Every year the state directorate of Maharastra organises sports competitions for school students. Those students who win in these competitions are awarded an extra 25 marks in the grand total of their final exam. As the Ashram school sports are not affiliated to the state directorate, these students are not eligi-
ble for those additional marks. President of the Maharastra Rakha Shikshak Parishad, Anil Bornare, said, "Ashram schools should be associated and affiliated to the State Sports Directorate so that even the tribal students can get the benefit of the marks". In all, the state has 552 government Ashram schools comprising 1.86 lakh students. It has 557 aided Ashram schools with 2.87 lakh students. A total of 3.98 lakh students are being denied the chance of being awarded these marks. The ADC spoke to Ramnath Mote, Member of Legislative Assembly, who said, “As the students from these Ashram schools and tribal regions are not awarded the additional 25 marks for sports, their final scores become less in the SSC exams. But these students win the events in which they participate. The State Sports Directorate should consider the Ashram schools under their purview.”
Former Union Minister G.K. Vasan during a press conference after formally announcing his decision to float a new party in Chennai on Monday.
HENNAI: Dealing a blow to the struggling Congress, its senior leader and former union minister G.K. Vasan on Monday quit the party and announced his decision to float a new outfit in Tamil Nadu. Blaming those who were entrusted with the affairs of Congress in Tamil Nadu for failing in their duty to strengthen the party,Vasan announced at a crowded press conference here that he and his supporters have decided to resign from Congress, reports PTI. "We are starting a new party. The name of the new party and its symbol would be announced soon at a rally to be held in Tiruchi shortly", he said. Vasan said the approach of AICC in Tamil Nadu was not satisfactory in achieving its goal which prompted him to resign from the party. "To achieve the goal in TN, there should be a different direction, a different approach from AICC, which we are not satisfied. We are having a new path.... We feel it will be a victory path", he said in stout defence of his new move. The decision by Vasan to disassociate from Congress, brings to end to his 14-year-long association with the grand old party following the merger of Tamil Manila Congress floated by his father G.K. Moopanar.

I immediately forwarded application to West Region legal advisor, we got the report from West Region legal advisor which stated that the FIR could not be registered over the application which the applicant had filed.” “I was shocked when I came to know that I was made an accused in this case. I have no direct or indirect concern with the case,” Chavan added. On Saturday, first information reports have been filed against Sinha, GVK Reddy and Sanjay Reddy and four senior police officials on a complaint that MIAL received undue benefit to the tune of hundreds of crores of rupees. The basis of the FIRs is a report of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on the Mumbai airport modernisation project. MIAL operates the Mumbai airport. Sinha, the then chairman of Airports Authority of
India (AAI); GVK Reddy, chairman of GVK Ltd; G V Sanjay Reddy, who is the managing director of the MIAL; deputy police commissioner Namdev Chavan; assistant police commissioner Madhukar Sankhye; senior inspector Rajendra Nagbhire and inspector Vijay Sathe have been charged in an FIR filed at Airport police station here under IPC sections 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The second FIR names the four police personnel under IPC sections 166 (public servant disobeying law with intent to cause injury to any person), 217 (public servant disobeying direction of law with intent to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture) for not registering the complaint earlier. Bhamburkar had approached the police last December, seeking registration of FIRs on the basis of CAG report, but police refused to entertain him, so he moved the court. According to the CAG's draft report, MIAL, owned by a consortium led by GVK Power and Infrastructure, received undue benefit from the government. It accuses the civil aviation ministry and the AAI of failing to monitor the Mumbai airport upgradation and modernisation project effectively. According to CAG, the project was to be completed in 2010 but was delayed by over three years, but the ministry did not levy any penalty on MIAL for the delay. zuber.ansari@afternoondc.in

Swacch currency policy
THE Reserve Bank of India has a message for the people of India: Stop using bank notes to make garlands. Decorative garlands at marriages and political rallies are widespread in this land. Rupee notes are often used and cause damage to the currency. The RBI tried to explain to the public that bank notes should be respected as they are a symbol of the Sovereign and should not be misused. The public should help in increasing the life of bank notes, it insisted. The bank also said it will attempt to supply clean banknotes throughout the country and urged its citizenry to comply with a 'clean note policy'. It's nice that the RBI is complying with the 'Clean India – Swachch Bharat'
EASY TO DUMP AT BANGANGA?... It is difficult to make out whether he is feeding the ducks or he is throwing 'kachra' into the Banganga.
Changing clothing cultures AMMA Jayalalithaa, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu wants any mundu-clad man to be allowed entry into any club in India and perhaps in England also. She does not
recognise the right of some persons to come together with a view of communicating with one other and have their own set of rules written down by common consent. The club also wants to have a sort of collective identity: to achieve this, they discuss and conclude what they should wear and what they should not. A club may not want their male members to wear shorts; some may went them to wear only 'dhotis and mundus'. The effort is to see that all the members wear the same kind of dress.
For instance, it would look hilarious if someone wore a mundu when all others are dressed in full suit. It will also look odd if all members are dressed in mundu and that one man is dressed in a suit. All clubs have rules which are set by themselves. When she was in power, she insisted that a mundu wearing man has a right to dress as he likes in a club which has selected the suit as the dress to be worn. It was wrong of the late M F Husain to have gone to the Wellingdon Club barefoot when all were wearing shoes. He was not allowed entry. This happening became news. Husain said in this country where millions of people cannot afford shoes or chappals, and went barefoot, it would be right if he also went to the club barefoot. Husain got what he wanted: huge publicity.
It’s not the driver’s fault
IN July this year, the MHB Colony police booked a BEST bus driver, Arjun Kharat, for running over a stray dog, killing it, in Dahisar (W). He took a sharp turn and did not notice the dog that had run around the back of the bus and got crushed under the rear wheel of the bus. It died on the spot.Following this
incident, a volunteer with animal welfare group Pawa India, who saw the dead dog, told another volunteer of the incident who then called the police.
These “animal lovers” then insisted that the driver booked for cruelty against animal. An FIR was registered against Kharat under IPC sections 279 and 428 for rash driving and killing an animal. In another similar story, an elderly couple on a two wheeler met with an accident after they had to swerve their vehicle abruptly to avoid the dog that had come in the way. They suffered several injuries and were hospitalised. This is a nightmarish experience for commuters on the street and a twisted interpretation of the law. A person at the wheel knows that breaks cannot be applied suddenly, especially when driving a heavy vehicle like a bus. It can bump into a
human, vehicle, or vehicles can bump into it with force from the back. What is the meaning of the law if the dog has faced death by coming in the way of the back wheel. It is certainly not the
movement that is sweeping the country. But with the inflation taking over our currency, shouldn't someone tell the RBI that garland making, which destroys many rupees at one time, is inherently deflationary?

And here was the wish of an 11-yearold, Class V student of J B Petit High School, Drishti Harchandani, which Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis could not turn down. After all Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too is a proud father of Divija, a kindergarten student. Having watched Fadnavis give interviews to television news channels, Drishti too wondered why she could not get an interview of the Chief Minister for her school project. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who at present is stayed put at Sahyadri State Guest House at Malabar Hill as the chief minister's official residence Varsha is under renovation, was very much impressed by her daring perseverance and invited her in to meet him. Her school curriculum included study of influential and dignified personalities in the society and having watched the newly sworn-in chief minister give interviews, she decided upon herself as to why she could not

With her maid Meera in tow, the curly haired Drishti who lives bang opposite Sahyadri State Guest House landed up at the gates. However, the security staff at the gates initially tried to turn her away as they felt that the chief minister would be distracted in discharging his duties. However, Drishti stood firm and insisted on meeting the chief minister. Finally, showing her presence of mind, she scribbled a letter to
Chief Minister Fadnavis stating the purpose of her visit. She even penned down a mobile number and her residential address and asked the Chief Minister to tell his security staff to let her in and that he (Chief Minister) had called her in. The letter was received by Personal Secretary of the Chief Minister who brought it to Fadnavis' notice. Upon receiving the letter, Fadnavis immediately instructed the staff to let the child in. irst a major blow from the voters in the Assembly election and now from his own men. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, which is virtually battling for its political survival in the state got one more setback yesterday when Raj's trusted aide Vasant Gite quit the party. Meanwhile at least twenty corporators of Nashik Municipal Corporation are rumoured to be in touch with the BJP and are likely to cross over very shortly. After drawing a blank in the May general elections, the MNS managed to bag just one seat in the 288 seats of the state Assembly, as opposed to the 13 it had bagged in the 2009 Assembly elections. Since the Assembly polls, Raj has taken a backseat and started mobilising the party rank and file. However Gite's decision has came as a shocker to the MNS chief. According to sources, party secretaries Gite and Atul Chandak, along with MNS district president Sachin Thakre, and nearly 150 party functionaries, submitted their resignations, throwing the party machinery in the district into a tizzy. The sources further added that Gite’s move could well trigger an implosion from within the party, hastening the MNS’s downfall in
the state. In the recently concluded Assembly polls, the BJP wrested all three seats from the MNS in Nashik city, with Gite, sitting MLA from Nashik-Central constituency was trounced by the BJP's Devyani Pharande by a margin of over 28,000 votes. Pravin Darekar, another

Raj Thackeray, chief-MNS. close associate of Raj, resigned from the party blaming Thackeray’s leadership style for the party’s dismal performance. Now all eyes are on the MNS corporators in the Nashik. They are in continuous touch with BJP leaders. In 2012, the MNS had bagged the Mayor’s post in the 122member Nashik civic body with the BJP’s support. This year, with the BJP withdrawing its support, the MNS managed to retain the Mayoral post only with the backing of the NCP and the Congress. The party has 39 seats in Nashik.

Compromise I formula before floor test? T
HE BJP wants to avoid depending on the NCP for passing the floor test. In the next few days, it has to prove its majority when the assembly meets and the governor asks it to do so. The NCP has made a convenient proposal: it is prepared to give continuing outside support. On the day of the floor test, it can either help the BJP in mustering the required majority by voting for it or just withdraw from the House. If it withdraws, the number of MLAs in the House will be 244. In that case, the BJP will be requiring only 123 seats to pass the floor test. However the BJP is not certain about NCP’s continuing support. It fears perhaps that the NCP may withdraw support any time. If it lets Shiv Sena become an ally, it will be a stable, permanent arrangement. The BJP, however, feels that the Sena is making too stiff demands. For instance, it wants deputy chief minister’s post and nine ministries — two of them plum ones. The BJP has now only one week left and it has to decide in a hurry its future course of action. Though the Sena has played its card a bit aggressively, the BJP finally has to give it what it wants. What and how much the Sena will be satisfied with is the only problem which BJP has to deal with. Chances are before the floor test a mutually agreeable formula might be arrived at and all will be well.

N the midst of debate on the illegal foreign I recall that when I was India’s High Comaccount holders, the names of those, who missioner in London, the stringency of were given amnesty a few days before the money had made New Delhi to write to its debate, have been forgotten. Apparently, they envoys to raise money from the Indians setare from the both main political parties, the tled abroad. I also made a fervent appeal to Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party the people of Indian origin. But I was sur(BJP). Otherwise, the shouting would not prised when the German ambassador told have stopped in such a short time. One other me that the Indians had so much money denoticeable point is that there has not been posited in the Swiss banks that they could even a cursory mention of how the account easily finance many five-year plans. In any case, the government has now holders came to accumulate so much money and what steps have been taken to stop the names of foreign account holders. They were practice. reportedly received many months ago when Stacking money abroad is a crime. There- the Congress government headed by Dr. fore, all those who have hidden money in for- Manmohan Singh was that helm of affairs. eign countries are guilty. The government’s hesitation in making their names public is not understandable. Obviously, both the Congress and the BJP are guilty and they do not want their image to be damaged if and when the names are out. Both parties have a lot to hide.
Illicit money The fact remains that the political parties, which spend crores of rupees during elections, have foreign countries as a safe haven for accumulating the illicit money. In this way, they not only escape public attention but also the amount of large sums which they would have otherwise paid in the shape of taxes. The people in India should, however, thank Germany which put the names in the public domain. One German bank got hold of the list of names unwittingly and handed it over to the Government of India. No intelligence agency in the country can take credit for the list. Why Germany gave the names is not understandable. If it was a pressure of sorts on New Delhi it has worked. The public was understandably up in arms when it came to know that 800-odd people have money abroad. There must be many other names which have not come out. The amount of money stacked abroad is said to be six lakh-crore of rupees.
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar Because of political considerations, it took no action against anyone. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who promised to book the guilty in one hundred days of his regime, has begun action only after seven months of coming to power. The Manmohan Singh government sat over the names which were received during its regime. Why no action was taken has not been explained by the Congress spokespersons. The uncomfortable questions are never answered. The disclosure of names is in the same category. The Modi government too has sacred cows. It has preferred to name some companies in the corporate sector to others. The three names announced from the corporate sector
are probably of those companies which the Modi government has not been able to mulct. Also, the concentration on the corporate sector is meant to divert the people’s attention from the political world. The effort is to convince the society that the illicit money is the doing of the corporate sector. This may be true because the money spent on elections, running into thousands of crore comes from the corporate sector. But this is the black money, earned through the illicit means. The politicians, whether in or out of power, have to bear the guilt. They look to the other side when the corrupt means are used to accumulate money.
Public platform That Modi would fight against the vested interest, who have polluted the politics, was expected, particularly when he talked about cleanliness from every public platform. But unfortunately he has not kept his promise. He has made businessmen and bureaucrats careful in going about their corrupt practices. But the corruption has in no way lessened. Even now it is not too late to retrieve his reputation if Modi puts all the names on the net. Who among them can be prosecuted depends on the evidence gathered. The disclosure of names will at least absolve him from the responsibility of hiding corruption from the people. This may not be an instance of corruption but it is quiet appalling. Some 3,000 crore rupees are estimated to have been spent on fire crackers during the Diwali. The money, again in crores, during the Dussehra, is separate from this amount. A country where one third of the population goes to bed without food is a sad spectacle of insensitivity to the conditions the common man faces. I have not found the activists coming once during street protests. The society is indifferent because those who lead the voice and mould public opinion are part of the problem. They can hardly offer a solution.
What do we mean by the problem of sex? W
E know sex as an inescapable physical and psychological necessity, and it seems to be a root cause of chaos in personal life of our generation. How can we deal with this problem? Krishnamurti: Why is it that whatever we touch we turn into a problem? We have made God a problem, we have made love a problem, we have made relationship, living, a problem, and we have made sex a problem. Why? Why is everything we do a problem, a horror? Why are we suffering? Why has sex become a problem? Why do we submit to living with problems; why do we not put an end to them? Why do we not die to our problems instead of carrying them day after day? Surely, sex is a relevant question, which I shall answer presently, but there is the primary question, Why do we make life into a problem? Working, sex, earning money, thinking, feeling, experiencing; you know the whole business of living - why is it a problem? Is it not essentially because we always think from a particular point of view, from a fixed point of view? We are always thinking from a center towards the periphery, but the periphery is the center for most of us, and so anything we touch is superficial. But life is not superficial; it demands living completely, and because we are living only superficially,
we know only superficial reaction. Whatever we do on the periphery must inevitably create a problem, and that is our life — we live in the superficial, and we are content to live there with all the problems of the superficial. So, problems exist as long as we live in the superficial, on the periphery - the periphery being the 'me' and its sensations, which can be externalized or made subjective, which can be identified with the universe, with the country, or with some other thing made up by
MATTER & SPIRIT the mind. So, as long as we live within the field of the mind, there must be complications, there must be problems, and that is all we know. Mind is sensation; mind is the result of accumulated sensations and reactions, and anything it touches is bound to create misery, confusion, an endless problem. The mind is the real cause of our problems — the mind that is working mechanically night and day, consciously and unconsciously. The mind is a most superficial thing, and we have spent generations, we spend our whole lives cultivating the mind, making it more and more clever, more and more subtle, more and more cunning, more and more dishonest and
crooked — all of which is apparent in every activity of our life. The very nature of our mind is to be dishonest, crooked, incapable of facing facts, and that is the thing which creates problems. Now, what do we mean by the problem of sex? Is it the act, or is it a thought about the act? Surely, it is not the act. The sexual act is no problem to you any more than eating is a problem to you, but if you think about eating or anything else all day long because you have nothing else to think about, it becomes a problem to you. So, is the sexual act the problem, or is it the thought about the act? And why do you think about it? Why do you build it up, which you are obviously doing? The cinemas, the magazines, the stories, the way women dress, everything is building up your thought of sex. And why does the mind build it up, why does the mind think about sex at all? Why, sirs and ladies? It is your problem. Why? Why has it become a central issue in your life? When there are so many things calling, demanding your attention, you give complete attention to the thought of sex. What happens, why are your minds so occupied with it? Because that is a way of ultimate escape, is it not? It is a way of complete self-forgetfulness. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

He also explains that medical practitioners often classify it as a carcinogen. Depending on the amount you consume, you could suffer from an upset tummy or diarrhoea, sugar cravings, mood swings, increased fat absorption and irregular sleep. Hezefa further warns us, “Aspartame could have a greater impact on children, simply because their internal systems are not as strong as ours. Alright, so there’s no such thing as fake food. However, artificial flavourings are usually chock-full of chemicals and, they’re pretty much as harmful as the idea. Dev Goswami finds out about the most common food flavourings and explains the effect they have on your health ver wondered what gives colas their additive taste? Or instant noodles that tempting, spicy flavour profile? In most cases, it’s a combination of several artificial flavours. These are chemically produced additives that aim to replicate the taste of natural ingredients. They are cheaper to produce and easier to preserve, which is why you’ll find them in most packaged foods. While there are thousands of different additives and flavourings, Huzefa Lokhandwala, fitness expert and managing director at Muscle N Mind, tells us that the following three are the most prevalent in foods that we consume on a daily basis. Read on to find out about those as well as a little bit about the other additives you should watch out for.

Food colouring This is not a single additive, but a group, and it is very commonly used to make food look more attractive. Huzefa tells us that blue dye has been linked with cancer, while red dye can causes thyroid
While those are the most common additives, you might also come across the following chemicals in your food. Read on to see what effects they have on your health. n Butylated hydroxyanisole: One of the three chemical antioxidants found in fried foods, a few studies conducted on animals have shown this additive to cause cancer. n High fructose corn syrup: Commonly found in processed food, high fructose corn syrup can pile on calories and increase the levels of bad cholesterol in your system. n Sodium nitrate: A common preservative, this is used to enhance flavours in items such as bacon and most processed meats, especially cold cuts. It makes old meat seem fresh and vibrant by lending it a rich, red colour. It is regarded as a carcinogen once it enters the digestive system. n Potassium bromate: This is used in bakeries to add volume to the flour. However a few animal studies found that long-term consumption of potassium bromate flour (or bread) might cause cancer. The effects on humans, however, haven’t been substantiated yet.

f, like us, you can’t do without a slice of cheese in every sandwich, or a generous sprinkling of grated cheese over your casserole, or a creamy cheesy dip to accompany your snacks, you are well acquainted with the guilt that follows after consumed copious quantities of this dairy delight. Besides, if you are lactose intolerant, or feel queasy after consuming rich, dairy-based products such as cheese, you’d be best served avoiding it, than feeling uneasy for hours afterwards. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to eliminate cheese from your diet all together. A healthy and surprisingly delicious alternative, is nut cheese. Made from nuts — as the name suggests — these cheeses are rich in nutrients, low in fat and don’t contain any form of dairy, making them a good option for people who are lactose intolerant, vegan or simply looking to cut back on calories. Nut cheeses are usually made from almonds and cashew nuts, but some experimental nut cheeses also use sesame, sunflower seeds and walnuts. Since you are always advised to incorporate nuts into your diet, because of their great nutritional benefits, nut cheeses are great, as they provide nutrition, without the added calories. With a single serving of nut cheese, you can give your body a healthy dose of protein, fibre, vitamins and essential fatty acids such as omega-3, amino acids and minerals. Not only do they boost your brain power, improve focus and give you a surge of energy, almonds and walnuts also help prevent cancer and heart diseases. Additionally, nut cheeses also help boost your immunity and keep your digestive system on track. Although nut cheeses aren’t commercially available in India yet, they are easy to make at home. So, instead of adding handfuls of nuts to desserts in a desperate bid to use up your Diwali largesse, set some aside to try your hand at making a nut cheese instead.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier Sauté vegetables Grape seed oil has a neutral taste, so it can be used to cook almost anything without disturbing the balance of the dish. One of the easiest ways to use this oil is to sauté your favourite vegetables with it. However, remember that grape seed oil is quite fatty, so use it sparingly.
2
1
Add flavour to your food Grape seed oil does not have much flavour, but you can use it as a base and fry herbs, ginger, garlic and green chillies in it. Grape seed oil has a high smoke point (the temperature at which an oil starts smoking, rendering it unusable for cooking), which makes it perfect to help release the flavours of several base ingredients.

« 10 ways to use:
Boost hair health Grape seed oil works great as a hot oil hair treatment. Mix it with rosemary and lavender oil in a ratio of 10:2:2. Heat this mixture for half a minute and apply it to your hair (make sure it’s not too hot!). Leave the mixture on overnight and shampoo it off the next morning. Doing this twice a week can stimulate hair growth and result in healthy locks.
5 Prevent oily skin Do you constantly battle oily skin, even though you use a face wash twice a day? Well, grape seed oil can help. The oil is an astringent, so it will help tighten your skin, closing your pores and preventing oil from pooling on to your face. All you need to do is gently massage a few drops of grape seed oil on your face after you wash it.
4
Wash vegetables Yes, you read that right! Grape seed oil is a natural disinfectant and also has antibacterial properties. This means that it will work very well to clean your vegetables, getting rid of pesticides and harmful germs. Make a solution with 20 drops of grape seed oil mixed with 1 tbsp baking soda, 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water. Spray this solution on vegetables and fruits. Let it sit for 10 minutes and wash the produce with fresh water.
grape seed oil With its antioxidant content and heart health boosting properties, grape seed oil is a valuable addition to your daily routine. Dev Goswami tells you about ten ways you can use it
6
Treat sinus infection A bad cold or an allergic reaction can leave you with a sinus infection (symptoms include nasal discharge, sore throat and dull throbbing pain), which grape seed oil can help to treat. It can help kill the fungi and bacteria that are responsible for the infection. You’ll need to use it as a nasal rinse, by inhaling a mixture of warm water and a few drops of grape seed oil. However, remember to consult your doctor before you attempt this to learn how to perform a rinse safely.
7
Use it as a dressing As we mentioned earlier, grape seed oil is quite flavourless. So, it will work great as salad dressing. A few drops of the oil can go a long way in boosting your health. Studies have shown that grape seed oil can reduce your risk of suffering from cancer and also lower blood pressure.
Enhance your moisturiser While grape seed oil on its own won’t benefit your skin much, as far as moisturising it is concerned, it can work great when combined with your existing moisturiser. The oil will help your skin retain moisture better. Mix a few drops with your regular moisturiser before you apply it on to your face.
8
9
Treat acne The antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties of grape seed oil make it perfect to prevent and cure acne. All you need to do is to apply a few drops to the affected area on your face and gently massage it in. Do this twice a day and you’ll see results in 3-4 days. Heal wounds There are several natural ways to heal wounds. But, if you’re thinking of buying a bottle of grape seed oil to reap the benefits, remember that it can also be used to treat wounds. It’s a natural antiseptic and will heal cuts and bruises faster. Simply apply some of the oil to a cut to clean it, wipe it off with a cotton ball and then apply it again to boost healing.

« quick quiz to know yourself
Are you mAnAging your Anger correctly?
We all use different techniques to contain our anger. But, do your techniques work effectively? Sara Shah suggests you take this quiz to find out 1. You immerse yourself in an activity or a hobby to release all your brimming anger. a) True. b) False.
>> If this is how you look every time something angers you, you aren’t managing your anger in a healthy manner
2. You think that talking to someone, whether it is a close friend or a family member, is much better than keeping your anger bottled up. a) True. b) False. 3. If someone has angered you, you choose to talk to them, rather than lash out at them.
a) True. b) False. 4. Every time you get angry, you spend some time alone in order to cool down. a) True. b) False. 5. When something or someone has hurt you, you only react if you think that it is worth getting upset about. a) True. b) False.
Mostly As If all of the above statements are true, it is evident that you have your anger on a tight leash. We all get angry, but some of us can handle it better than others. Anger is not an emotion you should invest all your energy in, and even if something does get you flustered, you know how to deal with it. Mostly Bs Clearly, you are having issues controlling your anger. You would rather complain about things or make a scene when you get angry, than try to address the issue. Even if you think that venting in an aggressive manner helps you calm down, you have to realise that you have probably lost more than you have gained. Talk to someone and try a different approach in order to deal with your anger.

ight from the blender you use to whiz up a sauce, the pan you cook it in and the container you use to store the leftovers, to the sponge you use to wash your dishes and the wash cloth you use to dry them — the way you use and maintain your kitchen tools can have a serious impact on your health. Take this quiz to find out if you know your way around kitchen appliances and tools as far as your health is concerned, or if you are inadvertently attracting germs and toxins.
Has your chopping board stood the test of time, and been part of your household for years on end? a. Yes. b. No. Do you replace all your nonstick cookware once every two years? a. No. b. Yes. Are you still using the same container for your blender that came with the appliance several years ago? a. Yes. b. No. Do you change your dishwashing sponge at least once every two or three months? a. Yes. b. No. Do you have an entire cupboard
Shirley Mistry suggests you take this quiz to ensure that your kitchen tools aren’t ruining your health
dedicated to plastic boxes (to store food), which you have accumulated over time? a. Yes. b. No.
>> Take our quiz to find out if your kitchen hygiene is spot on
Do you wash the plastic containers that take-away food comes in with soap? a. No. b. Yes. When you occasionally use an appliance such as a juicer, do you take it out of the cupboard and use it directly? a. Yes. b. No. Do you store water in the refrigerator in plastic bottles and change them annually? a. Yes. b. No. Have the wash cloths you use to wipe the dishes and your counter top been replaced in the last 4-6 months? a. No. b. Yes. Do you use the same cloth to wipe your dishes dry, as well as to clean your countertop? a. Yes. b. No. Do you heat your food in a plastic container in the microwave? a. Yes. b. No.
RATTy RAgS
First things first, the cloths that you use to wipe your hands, utensils and countertops must be three separate pieces of cloth. Never use the same cloth to wipe the countertop and utensils dry, as it is a sure-shot way of transferring germs from one surface to another. Unless you wash your countertop with soap multiple times a day, a scant amount of germs will remain on it. Using the same cloth to wipe your hands or utensils dry is an easy way for germs to spread. Also, ensure that you spread each cloth out to dry after you have used it, as damp, wet cloth is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
SPongES & BRUSHES
Sponges and brushes are difficult to clean thoroughly, simply because they are dense and so it is next to impossible to clean the centre of a sponge or each bristle on a brush. Replace them every month to prevent bacteria from breeding on them. Another easy trick is to microwave your dishwashing sponge for a minute or two at the end of the day. The heat effectively kills bacteria.

When it comes to storing your food, or even water in the refrigerator, refrain from using plastic boxes and bottles as far as possible. Over time, plastic begins to disintegrate, dispersing tiny toxic particles into the food and water that is stored in them. Also, when you heat food in the microwave in plastic containers, the rate at which this happens gets accelerated. So, use glass containers and bottles for a healthier alternative
Mostly As There’s no easy way to say this, but you are in dire need of hygiene lessons. While you think you are doing a great job at keeping your kitchen spicand-span and cooking yourself and your family healthy meals, you are ignorant about how to take care of and clean your appliances and commonly used kitchen tools, which can make you ill. Simple mistakes such as not changing your wash cloths often, or using the same cloth to clean countertops and wipe utensils can transfer germs and make you sick. Similarly, ensure that you wash appliances before you use them — even if they have been stored in your cupboard — as they can catch dust, breed microscopic germs and even have traces of fungus if you did not wash them thoroughly the previous time. While these are just a few pointers, read our section below to ensure that you update yourself on the basics. Mostly Bs You can safely breathe a sigh of relief, because you aren’t endangering anyone’s health — at least through your kitchen hygiene. You have a working knowledge about how to maintain your kitchen tools and equipment and take great care to ensure that you are cleaning and replacing them regularly. However, it never hurts to be careful, so take a look at our tips to ensure that you are doing everything by the book.
cleAn uP! If you aren’t aware of the several things that can go wrong when you are callous in the kitchen, take a look at our simple pointers to get yourself back on track.
(empty wine bottles with screw-on lids will fit perfectly in your refrigerator to store water). Also, if you choose to heat food in plastic containers, pick ones that are microwave safe. Never reuse plastic containers that you accumulate when you get food delivered home as they are made of extremely low-grade plastic that isn’t safe for being reused. Also, remember to sort through your containers and replace them every 3-5 months.
kiTcHEn APPliAncES
The blender and juicer that you got as a wedding gift maybe a family heirloom of sorts, but there are certain things you are going to have to let go of. For example, change the blades and containers every 2-3 years as the plastic needs replacement, and the blade loses its efficiency and can add toxins to your food. Also, ensure that you not only wash your appliances thoroughly after using them, but also let them air dry completely, so that there aren’t any wet spots for bacteria to breed on. Also remember that even if you have stored your appliances in the cupboard, they can still get dirty, so always wash them before you use them as well.
cookWARE
Utensils, even if they are of the non-stick kind, need to be replaced once in every two years. Not only does the coating get scratched or wear off, it also begins to peel off into your food, especially when you cook at high temperatures. Also, it is wise to replace your chopping board every six months as the gashes left behind by your knife are crevices that collect food, dust, and germs.

Cure blisters Blisters are easy to take care of on your own — as long as you’re careful. This guide will help you treat blisters effectively. n Sterilise your hands with rubbing alcohol. n Clean the affected area with alcohol or an antiseptic. n Use rubbing alcohol to sterilise a needle — a pin will work as well. n Puncture the blister with the needle or pin and use cotton to soak up the leaking fluids. n Apply an antibiotic ointment to the area and cover it with a cotton and gauze bandage. n Wait for a few days and then cut the dead skin with a sterilised scissor. n Apply an ointment till the blister has healed.
>> Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters
However, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t important. Ill-fitting shoes are a major reason for blisters. So, if you’re looking for running shoes, avoid buying them online, when you’re sure of size, fit and comfort. The best option is to go to a store where you can physically examine them. Carry socks that you intend to wear during your runs to ensure the best fit and make sure that there is a gap of half an inch between the tip of your shoe and your big toe.
I
f you prefer going for a nice, long run to stay fit, you’re probably well aware of how frustrating blisters can be. Although they are mostly harmless, they can cause a lot of pain and hamper you from running. However, there are several products that help keep blisters away. Take a look:
lubriCation & padding
soCKs Socks help prevent blisters — even better than good shoes can. A good pair of socks will ensure proper padding for your feet and in turn, prevent them from rubbing against the soles and material of your shoes, which is the most common cause for blisters. Pick socks that keep moisture away and minimise friction. Avoid wearing cotton socks — which are otherwise great for everyday wear — because they absorb sweat and put you at a higher risk of suffering from blisters. Instead, wear synthetic socks made from materials such as nylon. A great tip to follow is to wear two socks on each foot to ensure the best possible padding. Brands such as Puma, Nike and Adidas all offer nylon socks that are priced from `400 onwards.
sHoes Unlike socks, there are no specific shoes that we can recommend to prevent blisters.
PREVENT BLISTERS A common problem that occurs after running or if you wear ill-fitting shoes, blisters can make it difficult for you to stay fit. So, Dev Goswami brings you products to ensure that you can prevent them
Use products such as Vaseline (available at all medical stores) to lubricate your feet and prevent friction. However, if you aren’t prone to blisters, you can use talcum powder, which will also help prevent your skin from rubbing against your shoes. If you find that these don’t work for you, try blister padding such as Dr. Scholl’s Blister Treatment (available on retail websites for `1,500 onwards) which helps to heal as well as prevent blisters.
sKin tape Skin tapes are expensive, so only use them if nothing else works for you. Skin tape works in a manner similar to putting on a second sock — it creates an extra barrier between your skin and your shoes. However, the difference is that skin tapes are much more effective. You can buy the Spenco 2nd Skin Blister Pad (for `1,499 on www.amazon.in) or Mueller Kinesiology Tape (`5,395 on www.healthkart.com). Both these products will help prevent blisters by lowering friction, without affecting the flexibility of your skin.

HAY FEVER
>> There are several lesser known eating disorders that can affect your health
There may be more to that sneezing fit than an allergic reaction to dust and pollution. Sara Shah tells you more about an often misunderstood allergy
S
pring is synonymous with blooms and blossoms, while autumn is home to dried leaves and rustling trees. When seasons change, it’s a kaleidoscope of colours. But, there’s just one problem — you’re having a sneezing fit. It’s making your eyes itch and your nose is all runny. We often end up dismissing this as a reaction to dust or think that we’re coming down with a cold. What you don’t know, is that you might be suffering from a condition called allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever. This is an allergic condition that affects one in five people at some point in their lives. The symptoms occur due to the reaction that your body has to pollen — a fine powder that is released by plants and plays a key role in their reproductive cycle.
THE
SymptomS of Hay fever
OTHER SIDE
Often, the symptoms may vary in their severity and can range from being mild to severe. This depends on the weather conditions and the pollen count. Some of the symptoms include : n Frequent sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. n Itchy, red or watery eyes. n An itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears. n Coughing fits, caused by postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat from the back of your nose). n The loss of your sense of smell. n Facial pain (caused by blocked sinuses). n Headaches and earaches. n Tiredness and fatigue. >> Hay fever affects one in five people every year
While you have heard about bulimia and clinical anorexia, there are some eating disorders that display relatively milder symptoms, but can still have some serious effects on your health. Dev Goswami tells you about the Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)
T
here are certain eating disorders that display a mix of symptoms, or symptoms that are so mild that they cannot be classified as any particular disorder. Collectively, these conditions are termed as Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) or Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). Nutritionist and fitness expert, Shalini Bhargava, from JG’s Fitness, tells us, “OSFED includes eating disorders that exhibit milder symptoms of anorexia or bulimia. Since they do not meet the full criteria of these two conditions, they are classified separately as OSFED.” To make understanding them simpler, we’re going to give you a break up of the different types by comparing them with the commonly known disorders. n Atypical anorexia nervosa: This displays all the common symptoms of anorexia (which Shalini tells us include a fear of weight gain, inadequate food consumption and self-esteem issues over your body image). The difference is that even though weight-loss is observed, it is still at a low level, which can be considered healthy or normal. n Atypical bulimia nervosa: This is similar to bulimia, with the exception that the action of forcing yourself to vomit after an episode of binge-eating
— to lose weight — is infrequent. Because of the low frequency of throwing up, it cannot be classified as bulimia.
tHe cauSeS Just like with eating disorders, scientists haven’t been able to identify the exact cause for OSFED. However, Shalini explains, “The most important thing to remember is that OSFED fall under psychological illnesses and stem from emotional turmoil, low self-esteem, as well as a need to block out pain and anger.”
WHat SHould you do? While OSFED could be dangerous (see box for the effects), Shalini tells us that it is possible to recover from it even if you’ve
been suffering from any one or several as undiagnosed disorders for a while. She tells us about a few common ways to deal with OSFEDs. n Individual or group therapy: Psychiatrists can help you to deal with OSFED through medication or psychotherapy. Shalini also tells us that group therapy is a good method as well. She explains, “These sessions are typically led by a therapist and can help provide mental and emotional support.” n Nutrition counselling: While OSFED is primarily psychological, you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of a nutritionist. Shalini tells us that nutritionists can help you understand the actual facts about food and eating, as well as help you realise the importance of providing your body with enough nutrition.
effectS of oSfed While the symptoms of OSFED might be milder, they can be equally dangerous. We ask Shalini to tell us about some of the common effects of OSFED. n Inflammation of the oesophagus or stomach. n Chronic constipation.
Kidney failure. Osteoporosis. Irregular or slow heartbeat. Increased risk of heart failure. n Irregular menstrual cycle. n Increased risk of infertility. n Iron deficiency. n n n n
WHat cauSeS Hay fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. This fine powder contains proteins, and when they come in contact with the cells that line our mouth, nose, eyes and throat, they trigger an allergic reaction. This leads to swelling, irritation and inflammation. While pollen is most commonly found during spring, hay fever is pretty much perennial. Grass pollen during the summer and weed pollen during autumn can also cause hay fever.
HoW to tackle it
Unfortunately, there is no cure for hay fever. So, those who suffer from this irksome allergy have find a way to deal with it. But, you can relieve its symptoms with treatments such as antihistamines or over-the-counter medication, prescribed by your physician, that will reduce its severity to an extent. If you are looking for a natural alternative, you can try out the following home remedies for hay fever.
eaSy common Home remedieS
n Citrus fruits are abundant in antihistamines and vitamin C. They work as a natural decongestant and help alleviate symptoms to a certain extent. n Drink at least two cups of chamomile tea, as the antihistamines present in them will cool and soothe your inflamed senses. You can also cool and use the tea bags as an eye press. n The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture is known to alleviate symptoms of hay fever. People suffering from hay fever are often advised to undergo four to six sessions of acupuncture before hay fever season sets in.

Reality show thrills

By Sandeep Hattangadi
irector Sangeeta Balachandran has made a sort of ‘Trueman Show’ and ‘Wag the Dog’ kind of a reality show based film ‘Chintamani’ which is quite interesting. Chintamani (Bharat Jadhav) is a middle-class family man, with a loving and beautiful wife (Amruta Subhash) and a cute daughter (Tejashree Walawalkar). He lives in a Mumbai chawl and works for a matrimonial alliance company. He is a well meaning, honest and righteous man but he has to marry his wife against her rich parents (Uday Tikekar and Hemangi Rao’s) wishes and they break all ties with Chintamani and their daughter. Only once they visit their daughter to invite them for Amruta’s sister's marriage but Amruta’s father
insults Chintamani, who becomes morose and thinks of earning lots of money and then he sees an ad which says, deposit Rs 25,000, and get Rs 1 crore. Then starts Chintamani’s perilous journey into murky waters of crime, police, a loving girlfriend (Ruchita Jadhav), and a deep voiced criminal who kidnaps Chintamani’s daughter and tells him to get the bag filled with something precious to their den as soon as possible. The influence of reality shows on us is also highlighted in the film. The director has handled the difficult subject well and has projected the problems of the middle class very well and also that love scores over everything. Bharat Jadhav puts in a decent performance as does Amruta Subhash. Tejashree Walawalkar is good. Kishore Pradhan, Shobha Pradhan, Milind Gunaji, Milind Shinde, Ruchita Jadhav, Uday Tikekar, Hemangi Rao, Jayraj Nair,Madhav Devchakke, Monika Dabde, Kamlesh Sawant, are adequate. The music by Sanjeev Kohli is good. The cinematography by Suresh Suvarna is top class. All in all a film for masses as well as classes. A must see film for Bharat Jadhav fans.
lakh. 'Kalabharati' featured flautist Anand Kashikar who is a senior pupil of the late Malharrao Kulkarni. He played the raga Ahir Lalit which is rarely heard. He has mastery of the idiom. He also played the raga Pilu. He was accompanied on the tabla by the new star Prasad Padhye who is unexceptionally brilliant. Ashwini Modak, a pupil of the great Dr Prabha Atre sang the raga 'Todi' and 'Bhatiyar' with finesse.

He won a Filmfare for his role of an eunuch brothel owner 'Maharani' in Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Sadak’. After 'Ardh Satya', Amrapurkar starred in small roles in films such as 'Purana Mandir', 'Nasoor', 'Muddat', 'Veeru Dada', 'Jawani', and 'Farishtay'. In 1987, he starred as the main villain in Dharamendra starrer 'Hukumat' which went on to be a blockbuster that grossed even more than 'Mr India'. Amarapurkar became the "lucky mascot" for Dharamendra and thereafter they both starred in several movies. In the mid-1990s he migrated towards supporting roles and comic roles in 'Mohra', 'Ishq', 'Hum Saath Saath Hain', 'Aankhen', 'Coolie No 1', 'Aunty No 1', 'Jai Hind', 'Master' among others. Apart from giving some powerpacked performances in more

Amrapurkar had gone missing from the industry for quite some time and was last seen on the big screen in 2012 film 'Bombay Talkies', which was made to celebrate the centenary year of Indian cinema. He also acted in Marathi films like ‘ZP’, ‘Saverkhed Ek Gaav’, etc. He was of a social reformer bent of a mind and supported many social causes. He was a voracious reader and was a supporter of literature of all kinds. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, both of whom are filmmakers. The cremation will take place in Amrapurkar's hometown Ahmednagar on Tuesday. Amrapurkar will be forever remembered for bringing villains on par with the heroes. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

SADASHIV AMRAPURKAR (May 11, 1950 – November 3, 2014) Vishwanath Salian | ADC
adashiv Amrapurkar, born as Ganesh Kumar Narwode on May 11, 1950, an eminent stage, television and film actor passed away in the wee hours of Monday due to a lung complications at the age of 64. Known for his subtle mannerism, the versatile actor played varied villainous and comic roles in Indian cinema enthralling the audience with his 'unique' style in a career spanning over three decades. He played iconic character roles including a ruthless eunuch in 'Sadak', a villain in 'Ardh Satya' and a selfish father in 'Ishq' with an effortless ease. Ironically, while he would instill fear with his negative roles on-screen, the actor was a true gentleman in real life and involved in many social activities. ‘Chappell sought to remove Dravid’
N
EW DELHI: Dropping a bombshell, Sachin Tendulkar has disclosed that the then India coach Greg Chappell had made a "shocking" suggestion to him to take over India's captaincy from Rahul Dravid months before the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. "Together, we could control Indian cricket for years", the Australian told Tendulkar during a visit to his home when he offered to "help me in taking over the reins of the side" from Dravid, the master batsman writes in his autobiography "Playing it My Way" due for release on Thursday. Tendulkar is scathing in his criticism of Chappell who was the national coach from 2005 to 2007, describing him as a "ringmaster who imposed his ideas on the players without showing any signs of being concerned about whether they felt comfortable or not". Elaborating on the coach's bid to replace Dravid, Tendulkar writes, "Just months before the World Cup, Chappell had come to see me at home and, to my dismay, suggested that I should take over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid. "Anjali (Tendulkar's wife), who was sitting with me was equally shocked to hear him say that 'together, we could control Indian cricket for years', and that he would help me in taking over the reins of the side. "I was surprised to hear

NEW DELHI: After the success of Mary Kom, former India hockey captain Sandeep Singh is the latest sportsperson on whom a biopic has been planned and the ace dragflicker wants Ranbir Kapoor to portray his role in the movie. Actress Chitrangada Singh is set to turn producer with this planned film. "Chitrangada Singh has bought rights for making a film on my life. I am very excited that people will see my story on celluloid," Sandeep, who is currently playing for Hampshire county in UK, told PTI Bhasha. "I am a big fan of Ranbir and I want him to play the lead. He has played the role of a Sikh in Rocket Singh and looked very convincing. However, the producer will take a call on this," said the former skipper.

ODI here yesterday. "When you play such a knock, the self confidence gets a big boost and involve yourself in such a big partnership, it's a happy feeling," Dhawan added. Even as the Indian bowlers had the luxury of defending a huge total of 363/5, Dhawan was effusive in his praise for the manner in which pacers intimidated the opposition. "They bowled with lot of discipline and good to see Ishant taking four wickets in his comeback match. They bowled really good line and length with great pace. I really appreciate the way they generated pace." Dhawan said that it wasn't easy for the batsmen as pacers worked up good speed. "It was not easy for the batsmen. It's a very good sign that India is producing good fast bowlers, we are fortunate to have bowlers clocking 145kph. It brings fear on the opposition batsmen." On his century that came almost after a year, he said: "I wanted to get set and play the bowlers on merit. It's a very good feeling. First match and we won by a big margin. It gives a lot of confidence to the team. It's good to see openers scoring got a two hundred partnership." India had a watchful start with 43 from the first powerplay and Dhawan blamed the wicket. "At the start it was seaming and swinging a bit. It wasn't easy like the usual Indian wicket, that's why we gave a bit of time and waited for the ball to get old before taking it forward."

the coach not showing the slightest amount of respect for the captain, with cricket's biggest tournament just months away", Tendulkar writes. He says that he had rejected Chappell's proposition outright. "He stayed for a couple of hours, trying to convince me before finally leaving". So disgusted was Tendulkar with Chappell's suggestion that a few days after the episode "I suggested to the BCCI that the best option would be to keep Greg back in India and not send him with the team to the World Cup".
UTTACK: Shikhar Dhawan feels that Team India is "fortunate" that they have three options for the opening slot in him, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma, which will help in gaining the much-needed consistency required at the top of the order, withWorld Cup round the corner. "We are very fortunate that we three (him, Rahane and Rohit) are there with the Indian team, who can give the consistency. It's a very good sign for the team that our openers are scoring runs consistently. It's very important to have a strong base whenever batting first or chasing," Dhawan said after the conclusion of the first one-dayer. However, the Delhi left-hander refused to be drawn into comparison between who was a better opening partner among Rohit and Rahane. "I really enjoyed batting with both of them (Rahane and Rohit). Hopefully, they too enjoy batting with me. Both have their own styles. As far as my opening partner is concerned, it's team's call and I can't answer that. I love batting with both of them. When myself and Rohit used to open, we used to do the same thing," said Dhawan. Dhawan found his touch during the final leg of the England ODI series, got a half century against West Indies in the truncated home series and now reached the threefigure mark against Sri Lanka in the first

Josimar inspires Mumbai FC to fluent win M

After Josimar replaced Manuel D’Souza in the Mumbai FC attack it created panic in the Union Bank defence which completely fell apart and thereafter conceded five goals. Union Bank did well to match their more experienced opponents in the first half which ended goalless. But soon after the teams switched ends, Mumbai FC opened the scoring from an own goal when Union Bank defender Tejas Raut deflected into his own goal John Coutinho’s free-kick from the right in the 52nd minute. The bankmen continued to show more determination and managed to restore parity through the hard efforts of Shanon Pereira in the 60th minute. With the Mumbai FC attack struggling, coach Jamil brought on his ace Josimar and the latter immediately got down to business heading in his first goal in the 71st minute to regain the lead for his team. Liverpool faced with rampant Ronaldo
M
ADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo will be aiming for another record as the Champions League's all-time leading scorer when Real Madrid host a Liverpool side short on confidence at the Santiago Bernabeu here today. Ronaldo's opener in the European champions' 30 win at Anfield two weeks ago took him to within one goal of Madrid legend Raul's 71 Champions League goals. A 12th consecutive victory in all competitions would allow Real to seal their place in the last 16 with two games to spare in Group B. Liverpool are tied with Swiss champions Basel and Champions League debutants Ludogorets Razgrad in a battle for second place on three points.
However, despite suffering a sixth defeat of the season at Newcastle United on Saturday, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insisted his side won't be overawed by the task in front of them. "We've worked very hard over a couple of years to get to this level," he said. "To play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tells us that we've been doing okay. But, of course, we're in a transition phase. We want to be better and we need to be better. So the game tomorrow night is a wonderful game for us. "We're still very much in the group to qualify, which is the objective. It's a big ask playing against arguably the best team in the world at the moment.
