Stealing a march over hepatitis Project aimed at increasing awareness levels about hepatitis with a focus on prevention and early detection of cases By A Staff Reporter
T
he United Way of Mumbai (UWM) on Monday, came out with the results of its project called 'Yuvroshni' whose objective was prevention of hepatitis B and C infections through the means of information, communication and education along with participation of the community. It also aimed at targeted immunisation across select sections of the society that were identified as high risk areas. Through this two-year long project, UWM has managed to spread awareness among nine lakh people, test 10,000 people for hepatitis B and C virus, vaccinate 8,775 people
and send 107 people as referrals for treatment. All this was done for people belonging to communities like migrant workers, inter state truck drivers and transgenders. Also, women who work as commercial sex workers and their clients were a part of this interventional program. This program was conducted in three wards of the city namely N, S and T wards where areas of Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund are covered. The suburbs of Vashi, Turbhe, Koparkhairane, Rabale, Nerul and Belapur in Navi Mumbai were also included. Further, a quantitative comparative analysis of the answers given by
hundred respondents, out of which 50 were beneficiaries of the detection and prevention intervention in the Yuvroshni project and 50 were not a part of the project, revealed that knowledge and awareness about hepatitis, its types, mode of transmission and other aspects of this disease was more among people who were from the Yuvroshni project in comparison to the others. “Our aim was to increase awareness levels about hepatitis with a focus on prevention and early detection of cases. It also intended to aim at convincing officials from the public health department about the urgent need to enhance services to treat
and control hepatitis. This is why we trained 1,500 public health workers as well to ensure prompt response and services at the public health centres,” said Jayanti Shukla, Executive Director, UWM. The next step that the UWM is working towards is having a hepatitis free generation and that is what its ongoing project 'Pahal' is all about. It is working on the aspect of the rise in transmission of hepatitis B and C from mother to child. Yuvroshni was done in partnership with NGOs ALERT India and Anubhav, Mumbai, the National Service Scheme cells of the University of Mumbai and SNDT University, the BMC and the NMMC.

across the state. In Aurangabad, 444 anganwadis have ISO certification and two have been certified as ‘hi-tech’ with facilities like air conditioners, biogas plant, biometric systems, telephone, etc, giving Aurangabad the distinction of being one of the best managed anganwadi networks in the country. “The ISO 2000 certification in Aurangabad reaffirms that we are on the right track in terms of our policies and their implementations. I hope that we can spread the scope of nutrition and well-being for children and pregnant/lactating women across all our districts. It is a laborious effort but we are slowly getting towards a more healthy state with the implementation of the policies for those who need them the most,” said Prof Gaikwad.
t has taken 18 years to complete a mere 42 per cent of the 8 km Seawood Darawe-Kharkopar railway track which it now claims to complete in the next three years, subject to the availability of funds. Due to the delay, the project cost has predictably escalated to almost three times the original estimate of Rs 495 crore. The current estimate is a whopping Rs 1,800 crore which will only increase if the project gets further delayed, said officials at the Central Railways. Construction of this rail line was taken up jointly by the Central Railways (CR) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in 1996 on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra. However, due to reasons like the lack of co-ordination between the two bodies, the project has been continually delayed since then. Some officials are of the opinion that it will not be complete until the completion of the new airport in Navi Mumbai. Chief Public Relation Officer for the CR Narendra Patil said, “The revised project costs Rs 1,800 crore and includes the elec-
tric multiple units (EMU). So far Rs 380 crore has been spent – Rs 175 crore by the CR and Rs 205 crore by the state government.” He added, “On behalf of the state government, the CIDCO has been entrusted with the construction of stations and station campuses whereas the Central Railways has been entrusted with construction of bridges, earth work, and laying of rail tracks. So far 42 per cent of the work is completed and rest will be done in next three years.” According to CIDCO officials, the corporation has planned to float two tenders – one for the appointment of the consultant to design five stations on the planned rail route and the second tender for the construction of platforms at the new stations. Two stations out of the five have are already under construction and Sagarsangam station will require special design as it would be an elevated structure. This project is a gateway of development for the Navi Mumbai and Raigad areas which are underdeveloped due to the lack of connectivity. After its completion, the project will open new markets in this region.
No ‘innovative’ teachers! Continued from pg 1 « say that these courses need to be reviewed. In the year 2013, MU had conducted its annual academic council meet where the Management Council stated that permissions should not be given to new colleges to start traditional courses. This decision was made as the varsity had conducted a survey and noticed that there has been a drop in the admissions for traditional courses as well as lesser employment opportunities being generated by the same. MU had asked its academic council, the management council and its senate members to look for innovative courses which would help students to secure employment. Once the list of the innovative courses was ready, it was put forth in the senate meeting of MU and finalised with the approval of the senator and management council. Supriya Karande, senate member says: “The University should engage experts and specialised professors who can teach these innovative courses. Professors who will be teaching these courses do not have
complete knowledge about the same. The syllabus has to be reviewed and structured appropriately.” Mahadev Jagtap, Management Council Member, MU, says “It's the pilot batch for these innovative courses and the MU should thouroughly look into these courses. The experts and eligible professors from specific fields must be engaged. This will also make these courses have a long run in the University or else admissions will be a problem for the MU to conduct the courses.” In June, almost 146 colleges in Maharashtra got the approval for different innovative courses that are being introduced from this academic year. In Mumbai, six colleges have permission for innovative courses in B Com – transport management, investment management, financial management, NCC and economics. The courses related to management, engineering, science, arts and technology were permitted by the state government to various colleges. When ADC spoke to Dr M.A, Khan, Registrar, MU he said: “We have recruited professors who have knowledge about innovative courses. The MU will surely appoint experts and specialised persons for these courses whenever required. MU already has plans to invite experts from the various fields for these courses”.

Judge: No sex before marriage
How unkind and cruel can some judges be to women! A high court judge has spoken: A woman should not have sex before marriage. He appears to be totally oblivious of the compelling needs of a woman. In his zeal for ensuring the non-stop reproduction of the species, God has made the sex urge in men and woman equally strong and compelling. A girl goes hysterical if she is forced to ignore her sex urge. It is not easy for a girl to get a man as a life partner easily. Even the girl with all the qualifications physical, mental, emotional - has to wait sometimes for several years before she gets a husband. They are not available nineteen to the dozen. Most of the time, the hunt is long and frustrating. The wait is painful. A girl gets puberty earlier than before. Most girls get puberty before 11 and 13. God's process of creation starts then: Inside the fallopian tubes of the female, the eggs are laid and they wait desperately, hopefully for the male sperm. And even as this process is going on in the female, a compulsory, divine itch develops. And as years go by and the girl becomes adult, one can imagine her mental and physical state. And according to the judge, she cannot have sex. And I have stated, marriage does not come easily for a girl. The suitable boy is not easy to come by. Time was when a girl did not

have a chance regarding the selection of a husband. In fact, in many homes, she had to accept without a murmur the boy chosen by the relatives. The judge perhaps does not know about the changed situation. The stark truth is today's girl finds it difficult to obey the order of the judge. Most girls cannot be happy with self-gratification and choose their own way. Let each girl work out her own solution.
Now, Kerala cops too bring shame
We are expressing disgust at uniformed crooks bringing shame to the country – three members of the Kerala police are in the dock in connection with a rape case, and shockingly two of them happen to be lady cops! A woman was raped while she was in their custody! Our politicians - they would have us believe - never grow old. Look at any poster and you will find them as young as ever. They want to present before their supporters a picture of youth. You will never see an old image on a poster. In some posters, we find the photos of father and son: In many of them the father looks younger than the son. There are some political leaders who want to be in the limelight throughout the year. The court is quite unsympathetic: It

Youth will man counters at police stations to help in crimes against women, children, senior citizens

n a bid to involve participation of youth to help in crimes against women, chidlren and senior citizens, the city police is contemplating to station college students at the help desk of each of the 92 police stations in the city. Further, plans to create anti-eve teasing squads of students at colleges and schools is also on the cards, informed city police chief Rakesh Maria during a program on safety and security of women and children at YB Chavan auditorium. "Currently, not only terrorism and organised crime or underworld but the safety of women, children and senior citizens are also the biggest challenges before

Mumbai police," said Maria adding that, "attacks on women, children or senior citizens does affect the society very severely." In this regard, several measures have been taken for the safety of women, said police. “For instance, a female victim is not required to come to the police station to file her complaint. For this a special 'help desk' is already in place for them at police stations and other places," added Maria. These desks are now manned by constables at police stations. “The help desks could be manned by students, which will make victims feel more confident. This would also decrease the distance between police and students. At the same time,

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated tenders for the resurfacing of three crucial bridges in the city – Currey Road, JSS (Jagannath Shankar Sheth) and Keshavsut – to give motorists a smooth ride throughout the year. The proposal will be discussed in the standing committee meeting
tomorrow. Earlier the civic body had awarded the tender worth Rs 7.53 crore to ME Infra Projects but things did not work out and now a new tender of Rs 11 crore has been floated. The civic body plans to carry out the resurfacing work, which is different from maintenance work, using the 'hot mix technology' (asphalt). However the civic body was to resurface these three
bridges before the monsoons to ensure a smooth ride for at least three years. The three bridges located between Currey Road and Dadar, considered to be dense-traffic regions, will be affected once the construction is underway. To tackle this situation, the traffic will be diverted to alternative lanes by the traffic police, said a civic official. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

These five girls along with other girls underwent all the further processes including medical examination. And for the last 24 days they are staying at Dongri Children's Home. Their parents come to meet them every day from Taloja. As per the law they have to wait for minimum 15 days to get the permission to take their children home. Pinki (17) (all names changed to protect identity) told ADC, “I went with my sister to give 'dabba' to my parents, I don't work or live there. They took me also with the other kids. We all were living at another place and today they sent me with my parents.” Priti (12), who is Pinki's sister said, “I went with my sister. s reported earlier in ADC on August 2, 2014, ninety-seven minor slave labourers were rescued from Meenakshi Fishing Company, Taloja, Panvel on July 11, 2014. Out of those 97 children, five girls were not slave labourers. These five girls were simply present in the company compound at the time of the raid. On July 11, 2014 at 6 pm with the help of Crime Branch and Taloja police the NGO, Indian Rescue Mission (IRM), raided Meenakshi Fishing Company also known as Ulka Seafood. The raid was conducted based on the information about 16 Kandhamal – a riot affected district in Orissa – girls working as slave labourers. At the time of raid around 200 slave labourers were rescued. Among these labourers 97 were minors out of which five minor girls were not working there. These five girls were neither slave
Pappu Jadhav (40), father of Pinki and Priti said, “Today they finally released my daughters. I don't understand why were they taken because they don't even work there. They have to stay at Children's Home for so many days for no reason at all.” Harish's daughter and niece also came to the company on July 11. He said, “My daughter Dolly and my brother's daughter Seema went to give food to my wife who works at the firm. It was raining that day so my wife asked them to stay there. The girls started playing there waiting for my wife. Then this raid happened and they took the girls. My girls don't work there. Today she has been released.” Chandrashekhar, father of 16-year-old Janvi is still waiting for his daughter to return. He said, “My daughter came there to deliver food to me and my wife. She doesn't work there yet they took her. We just want our daughter back. Are we asking for too much?”
aking serious note of the rape allegations against senior IPS officer Sunil Paraskar, the state women's commisison (SWC) on Monday demanded the suspension of the officer. The reason for this, stated Susie Shah (SWC chairperson), in her one page letter, that it would ensure a free and fair probe. With regard to the lie detector test, which the city police was supposed to perform on Paraskar, the commisison said that the investigators should consult with a leading cardiologist attached to a government hospital. Last week, Paraskar's lawyer had said that the accused cannot undergo a lie detector test, as he has undergone a bypass surgery. The commisison is with the opinion, after consultation with a leading cardiologist of the city, that despite an individual undergoing a bypass surgery, the lie detector test can still be per-
Sunil Paraskar formed on him or her. Meanwhile, the commisison has also asked the investigators to submit a status report of Paraskar's case so far. The deadline of submitting the status report with the commisison is by the end of this week, stated the letter. Last month, a modelturned-actor filed a rape case against Paraskar, in which the officer, hitherto, has been grilled twice by the investigators. The officer has been granted interim relif from arrest by the court till August 5. Following a complaint by the model, Paraskar was booked under IPC sections – 376(2)(rape by a police officer), 376(C) (intercourse by superintendent of jail, remand home, etc) and 354(D) (stalking which interferes with the mental peace of a person or causes distress, fear of violence or alarm) at Malwani Police Station. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Ponder awhile... “Diplomacy means all the wicked devices of the Old World, spheres of influence, balances of power, secret treaties, triple alliances, and, during the interim period, appeasement of Fascism.” — Barbara Tuchman
Waiting for Indian A PM’s visit NE would expect leaders of an O underdeveloped nation like India - there are crores of poor people in the country who are fighting a losing battle for survival - to turn to big, wealthy nations soon after the win in the Lok Sabha election. BJP's Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have, however, given secondary importance to the big nations and is giving full attention to all small countries around India. His message to them seems to be: ‘You need us more than we do. Welcome.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his day one in power by inviting all the SAARC nations - all neighbours. He has been busy building ties with them and extending areas of co-operation. The truth is countries like the United States, England and France want to do big business with India. Such contact with our nation will help them more than it does for us. The opening up of the windows for FDI has made them compete with one another to get the largest chunk of market share in India. The United States, which refused to give him a visa, evidently for no valid reason, will perhaps be visited by Narendra Modi at last. Various kinds of overtures are being made by that country to placate our prime minister but he goes to tiny Nepal and spends two days there — talking to the king. The United States has to wait for its turn: Chances are it will get it last.

MIT SHAH is a new word in the Sangh Parivar jargon. It means loyalty. Shah is, without any doubt, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Man Friday. But what differentiates him from others is the blind faith he has in his master, Modi. Amit Shah was given the task to polarize the biggest state of Uttar Pradesh. He won the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 71 seats out of 80 in the Lok Sabha in the recent elections. Modi has now put Shah at the head of the BJP to spread the same divisive ideas, the Hindutva, all over the country. One thing is clear from his appointment: Resistance to extremists has worn out so much that even a fanatic Hindu like Shah can occupy the highest position in the Sangh Parivar. He is openly trying to put RSS and Modi’s government on the same page. For example, Kaptan Singh Solanki, appointed as governor of Haryana, is a hardcore RSS member. What it conveys is that the BJP is willing to be used as an instrument of RSS.

Punjab and Haryana. RSS considers the Sikh part of Hindu community. The Sikhs, on the other hand, are against the assumption. The violent reaction of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal showed that the Punjab Sikhs, a majority in the community, will not tolerate any division in what he describes as 'panth', the Sikh order. Another unfortunate deduction is that the liberal elements in the BJP have dwindled in numbers. They find no option to the RSS leadership. Maybe, the distance between the BJP and RSS was never a reality. It was part of the RSS tactics to make a dent in the general
Idea of pluralism
Sangh Parivar By stating that the Sangh would take part in politics, Mohan Bhagwat, RSS chief, has only confirmed the perception that the Parivar is dictated by RSS. This may be against the undertaking that RSS had given to Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that it would not participate in political activities. Then the Jan Sangh had to amend its constitution to reenunciate that the organization would remain “devoted purely to cultural work.” The appointment of Solanki also sends out the message that there is no difference between BJP and RSS, the liberals and the extremists. Both are two sides of the same coin. Modi may not have taken any step to accelerate the pace of Hindutva. Yet his prime ministership has emboldened the RSS elements. So much as that one BJP member called Sania Mirza, India’s pride in tennis, a Pakistani. It must be tough for the Muslims who have to prove their loyalty to India all the time. Her husband is no doubt a Pakistani. She was naturally hurt for being questioned on her nationality. The Hindutva of sorts was seen in Haryana where a separate Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Haryana will control by all the Gurudwaras in the state and their offerings. It is a serious matter which should have been ponder over seriously to find a formula to allay the fears of Sikhs in
MP and instead said it was done only to let the authorities know that the food supplied at the Maharashtra Sadan was awfully bad. Though the Sena MP had subsequently apologised, the party had no business to equate it with some Muslim men raping women during Ramzan. The Modi government has at last reacted with Home Minister Rajnath Singh regretting the incident and reiterating that the government was committed to safeguarding the religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. Despite this, Modi’s overall say in favour of Hindutva cannot be denied. He is associated with the anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002. He is also known for his strong anti-Pakistan and anti-Bangladesh, the two Muslims republics in India’s neighbourhood. Amit Shah was part of Modi’s ministry at Ahmedabad at that time.
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar perception that the Indian society prefers the liberal BJP to the obdurate RSS. The perception about tolerance in the Hindu religion is largely true. Had this not been the case, the Constitution would not have said in the preamble that India would be a secular republic. The proof is provided by elections where 80 per cent of Hindus, who constitute an overwhelming majority, vote for a liberal India. Another indication is that even the liberal Muslim leaders don’t get elected even when their community constitutes 15 to 16 per cent of population in the country. The ominous side is that the bigoted are adopting a still harder line and getting acceptance. Otherwise, Shah’s elevation makes little sense. After the BJP victory at the Centre, he has been polarizing the society and ensuring that the party does not snap its ties with RSS or the extremist Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. The recent episode of forcible-feeding a fasting Muslim by a Shiv Sena MP is in a bad taste. What is more surprising is the explanation offered by the MP concerned and others. Several Sena members failed to condemn the
Fortunately, Modi also realizes that he should have good relations with both the nations. His invitation to the Prime Ministers of Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives, to his oath-taking ceremony says so. For Modi to have good relations with India’s neighbours would strengthen the idea of pluralism, something that has helped the country to sustain a liberal atmosphere in the subcontinent. Both New Delhi and Dhaka are fighting against fundamentalism, represented by the Taliban. Islamabad is used to do so because it uses them for fighting ‘a battle of independence’ in Kashmir. There is also a strong influential lobby within Pakistan to support fundamentalism which is spreading in the entire Muslim world. I wish New Delhi could act against the Hindu Taliban which is emerging as a serious force. The liberal Muslims, whether living in Pakistan or Bangladesh, cannot afford to be complacent in their resolve to eliminate the Taliban, the fundamentalists. They want the Islam to abandon the efforts at reformation and go back to the type of Islam was at the time of inception 1,400 years ago. They too realize that it is not possible to do that. But then their approach is based on the strategy in elections which seem to return a candidate who supports pluralism. Rulers of Pakistan and Bangladesh seem to be realistic enough not to do anything which would scare away the non-Muslim electorate.

Ignorant students? THE agitation by a set of students to shun English is ignorance which the UPSC cannot brook at all. They are mostly from the Hindi belts who think that Hindi should suffice everywhere. Relatively, the students from south learn English and Hindi apart from their state language requiring to pass the exams in each language to qualify. It is foolish to distance English and it goes without saying that English is one language that is globally facilitating communication across the world and enriches the vision and knowledge. The students from the Hindi belt seem to be pessimistic about their ability to compete with the students from the south. The government should summarily reject their frivolous noises and put its foot down in the large interest of the nation as a whole and issue orders for strict compliance to get back to the learning table thus firmly getting the message across that the government cannot put up with the whims and fancies of these sort of students and jeopardise the quality of the UPSC exams.

Officials bring shame THIS refers to the report 'Glasgow Shame', (ADC, Aug 4). One feels ashamed to note that at a time when our athletes have won bagfuls of medals by their splendid performances at the CWG, the IOA officials have only brought disgrace with the General Secretary getting arrested for drunken driving and the wrestling referee, getting booked for sexual assault. After the exit of Kalmadi, one thought that the IOA has become a lot cleaner but that does not seem to be so. If the charges are proven, the government needs to take stern action against the officials as the sports minister has indicated. The necessity for sending the IOA officials to these games also has to be reviewed in the light of such ignominious incidents. It should be enough if a single general manager accompanies the contingent along with the respective coaches. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

INTERVIEW
“I
never wanted to be a politician as such. But yes, I was always into social work in college too,” said Sachin Ahir. “I might have a big house today, but I was born in a middle class family and stayed in a 180 sqft house at Makba Chawl. That's why I understand the requirement of the people that I have been representing for the last few years. My early schooling at Kalina and secondary education from Modern School provided a strong base for my higher education. After studying in Holland, I came back to India and started working in the mills as an assistant to a welder. My ability to speak English proved to be an asset. I started speaking out for the workers in his mill and represented our mill workers' union in a case which we we eventually won. I was received at the airport in Mumbai by over 2,500 employees.” This ability to relay his fellow workers' concerns and his successful negotiating skills marked his foray into the realm of serving the people as a trade union leader. He has been winning the Sewree Vidhan Sabhaa, and now the Worli constituency, for the past three consecutive terms since 1999, proving to be a strong candidate for the 2014 elections. Soon after formation of the Democratic Front government in Maharashtra, Ahir was appointed Chairman of Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board as a Minister of State. He is now the Minister of State of seven departments.
SACHIN MOHAN AHIR, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Maharashtra, known as 'Bhau' among fellow politicians, social workers and followers, imbibes the philosophy - “A leader is at his best when the people barely know that he exists, but when his work is done and his aim fulfilled, they will say, we did it ourselves.” The word 'Bhau' is synonymous with the Worli and Sewree localities in Central and South Mumbai. One man has been solely responsible for the complete makeover of the Worli skyline since years. Sachin Bhau, who handles several portfolios like State Housing, Slum Improvement, House Repairs and Re-Construction, Urban Land Ceiling, Industries, Mines, Transport and Environment, Parliamentary Affairs and Guardian Minister of Raigad, is however known for his work on policies for the welfare of the 'common man' in the housing sector. Sachin and his wife, producer-director SANGEETA AHIR, co-founder of the charitable trust Shree Sankalp Pratisthan, have always believed in the development of society from within. Sangeeta endeavours to create a sustainable structure in society and has played an important role in uplifting the standard of living for the residents of Worli. Shree Sankalp Pratisthan works in socialeconomic welfare and is known for organising the grand Dahi-Handi festival – the biggest in the city. With Gokulashtami just around the corner and elections few months away, PHILIP VARGHESE met the Ahirs at their residence 'Gulrukh' at Worli Seaface one afternoon to learn about their plans for Mumbai's development, politics and their personal life.
This makes one wonder, is it easy to handle seven departments at a time? “Not at all,” said Ahir. “However, I have always seen to it that I keep a strong follow up in every department under me. I don't like issues or files pending so I have always tried to handle issues to the best of my abilities. I don't think you will have any complaints from any of my departments.” As a Minister of State for Housing, Ahir's achievements include the rehabilitation of more than 1 lakh slum and chawl dwellers. “The allotment of 6,700 MHADA houses for mill workers - which they were allowed to rent out to repay their debts, has received good response from the mill workers community. I have also proposed a policy to increase FSI for green building projects in a move to sensitise issues
pertaining to the environment such as Mumbai's water scarcity problem. We are soon planning to announce the FSI increase in the city,” admitted Ahir. He added, “I worked a lot to bring in the Maharashtra Housing Act, 2012, to regulate errant builders. Due to this effort the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) was established to curb illegal activities by the builders. According to the Act, registering the housing project and displaying it on the website of the Housing Regulatory Authority becomes mandatory for the promoter. The promoter will have to pay a fees not exceeding Rs 50,000 along with the application for registration. Maharashtra will be the first state to establish the regulatory au-

thority for the housing sector.” A family man, Ahir is deeply interested in music, sports and films. His family strong supports his vision and shares the compassion he has for his people. His "hands-on" approach to leading his constituency to the level it is today has earned him immense respect and affection for making Worli an international destination over the years. “Over the last few years, I have spearheaded the change in the Worli skyline and infrastructure through various projects such as building jetties for Worli Koliwada and the construction of 27 gardens across Worli. The initiative of beatification of the Worli promenade was undertaken by me. I have tried to elevate Worli as the socioeconomic

hub of Mumbai with focused plans to route the monorail, Metro and Trans Urban Link through Worli,” Ahir said. Interestingly, Ahir is the only minister who is known for conducting meetings while travelling in his car. “My daily schedule is always tight. I go to the gym, then walk a little, I do my poojas, then meet some visitors and making some phone calls. In fact, I conduct four meetings in my car till I reach my office at Babulnath.” His wife Sangeeta Ahir is not far behind. She is also deeply interested in films and is currently the director of Mangal Murti Films Pvt Ltd. Having produced movies like 'Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi', 'Singh Saab, The Great' and 'Apne', she now has multiple projects in the pipeline. “My husband has been my pillar of life in everything I do. Since the inception of Shree Sankalp Pratisthan, Sachin has been working with me in areas of socioeconomic welfare of the people, humanitarian aid, education, medical help, youth and woman development, non-formal employment training for youth, community technology services and cultural activities, to name a few. The trust is highly professional in its approach and its methods are underpinned by a strong academic research ethos,” Sangeeta said. About the money spent on the Sankalp Dahi-Handi festival, Ahir replied, “For several years, I used to see that our boys from Mumbai go all the way to Thane and other areas beyond Mumbai to celebrate this festival, because huge Dahi-Handi festivals used to be organised there. That's why I thought that we should have a festival here in Mumbai itself so that our boys can enjoy with the same spirit. Accordingly, we conducted our first Dahi-Handi festival in 2003 at the Shree Ram Mills Naka.” Ahir's children – daughter Aishwarya and son Kiran – haven't shown interest in politics. However Sangeeta said, “I remember my daughter telling Sachin that if you don't do something about the tetrapods in the Seaface, someone else would. That's the way she is. Kiran is keen on films.”
Sachin’s wife, Sangeeta Ahir, says, “My husband has been my pillar of life in ever ything I do. Since the inception of Shree Sankalp Pratisthan, Sachin has been working with me in areas of socioeconomic welfare of the people, humanitarian aid, education, medical help, youth and woman development, non-formal employment training for youth, community technology services and cultural activities, to name a few. Let’s talk about the shape of your face first. Different face shapes are believed to point towards different character traits in a person.
! People with such faces are said to be more emotional and are extremely caring people. If you’ve got this face type, you’re probably also quite sensitive. ! Do you have a square face? Well, not only will you look more stern, you will also be more stern! You’ve got a hot and cold personality and in all probability, you’re quicktempered, as well as aggressive.
! ! ! ! " ! ! ! " ! " !
Do you find yourself working more than you should? If so, your face shape is definitely oblong. People with oblong faces are practical, but usually overworked. Do you find yourself indulging in activities without thinking them through and then getting tired equally quickly? Take a look in the mirror, because you’ve probably got a triangular face.
! ! You are full of character and really kind, according to face reading.
There are several studies that can tell you more about your personality just by looking at the shape of your nose.
You probably hate your large nose, but here’s a reason to love it — in ancient European empires, particularly Greece and Rome, a strong nose was an indication of power and strength. People with a large nose are less likely to suffer from cold or flu. Large noses are also an indication of being more creative.
! Do you have a cute little nose that is the envy of everyone around you? Well, you’ve also got quick wits going for you and a lot of physical strength. You can think on your feet and don’t get cheated easily. According to Chinese face reading techniques, people with snub noses are the best, most attentive partners.

EyE SPy From the size of your eyes to the colour, here’s what your eyes say about you. Blue: Blue eyes are an outcome of less pigmentation, so be careful, because although light-coloured eyes are the envy of many, they put you at risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. Blue eyed people are thought of as peaceful, focused and mentally adept. Brown: Whether you’re the brown-eyed girl Van Morrison was singing about, or have a more chocolate-coloured hue, the University of Louisville believes that you will be better at fastpaced activities. A study that it conducted, found that people with brown eyes had quicker reaction times.
>> Fleshy cheeks are an indication of a sociable personality, which is probably why you feel like pinching a baby’s cheek
GETTInG CHEEKy Whether you’ve got soft cheeks, no cheeks or high cheekbones, ancient beliefs and face reading techniques have something to say about them. Fleshy cheeks: Do you have soft, fleshy cheeks? If you do, people are drawn to pinching them for a reason! With cheeks like this, you’re warm-hearted and extremely sociable. High cheekbones: Ah, you probably already know that you fit into this category, because you’re extremely power hungry, with a need to know everything. Pronounced cheeks: You’re not power hungry, but you do want to be successful. You’re aiming to climb the ladder to get better, both professionally and personally.
The size: Studies suggest that if you have small eyes, you’re introverted, while medium eyes indicate balanced intelligence. Those with large eyes seem to have it all going for them, as they are said to be creative, emotional and extroverted. Also, the ancient art of Chinese face reading suggests that people whose
LEnGTHEn IT OUT Do you have long arms? If so, you’re at a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. If you’ve got muscular arms, you’ve got more testosterone! This is obviously something that you can build on (think: the gym!), but we don’t know if you should, because a study in the US found that the more muscular your arms are, the more crimes you’re at risk of committing!
>> If face reading techniques are to be believed, your eyes truly are the windows to your soul eyes are close set are not only confident, but are also extremely independent.
WALK IT OUT Your legs can reveal whether you are anti-social, or if you are at risk of medical conditions! Read on to find out more. High arches: Chinese philosophy tells us a lot about body shape and what it says about your character. In this art, they believe that people who have high foot arches are extremely self sufficient and independent. This is great — but it could often border on you being anti-social! Cold feet: No, these are not runaway brides! Women who have cold feet can develop an under-active thyroid as they grow older. This is not an ancient belief, but a scientific fact. The thyroid regulates temperature and metabolism in your body, so the colder you are, the more at risk you are.
CAn yOU (H)EAR IT?
Stumpy legs: Do you have stumpy legs? According to the International Longevity Center in New York, the shorter and stumpier your legs are, the higher the chances of you having liver problems and heart diseases in the future. But, you will have better bones — so say goodbye to the risk of frequent fractures as you age! Long legs: Leggy models have made long legs desirable and now, the University of Wroclaw in Poland is giving us another reason to make us wish we had them. While we’re not sure if this is scientifically true, the study showed that men and women perceive longer legs to be a sign of good nutrition! Chunky thighs: So you don’t have long legs — but you do have a very generous set of thighs. Don’t worry about them, because a study from Denmark concluded that the larger your thighs, the lower your risk of premature death!
From big ears being a sign of courage and round ears being a sign of creativity, there are several things that your ears can say about your personality. Take a look at what ancient beliefs have to say. Big ears: Another Chinese belief, big ears are said to be a sign of vitality. If you’ve got big ears, you probably have the courage and conviction to follow your own path and you’re also very independent. Creased lobes: Do you see a little crease across your earlobe? Unfortunately, this is not a very good sign! A creased ear lobe usually serves as a warning sign that you’re at risk of heart disease. Large lobes: This indicates that you are independent and strong-minded, so no one will see you submitting any time soon! Large or long: People with large ears are very dominating, so beware of them! On the other hand, those with long ears have a strong moral sense. Rounded shapes: The rounder your ears, the more interested you are in the arts and music. You are considered trustworthy and friendly and you’re >> People with big ears probably are independent and have social too! strong convictions
HEIGHT OF THE mATTER
The journal, Clinical Endocrinology, found something interesting about short men and women. If you’re below 5ft 2inches and are a woman, you’re probably slightly depressed and unfortunately at risk of mental health problems. As a man, the cut off for this is 5ft 7inches. But, taller men and women don’t have it that much better. At 5ft 8inches and above for women and 6ft and above for men, you’re at risk of back, bladder and obesity problems.
CHIn UP
Your chin could say a lot about your personality too! If you’ve got a big chin, you’re more independent, while a weak chin symbolises a weak personality. A study in the US showed that women with masculine jaws were more likely to cheat, while a Dutch study found that people with small chins were perceived as shy, even if they actually were not.
HAIR & THERE Blondes: There’s a good reason to believe the theory that people with blonde hair have the most fun. It’s because — as the University of California found — they are much more confident. Of course, this may be because they’re used to getting more attention. Redheads: If you’re a redhead, you’re going to feel pain a lot more than your darker-haired counterparts. You might also need more medication and anaesthesia! The consistency: Is your hair incredibly smooth? Then you’re probably as delicate as your hair looks and extremely emotionally sensitive. If you have coarse hair, you have a strong physical drive and super-fast recuperative powers. The amount: If you’re balding, you may have a higher IQ – especially if you’re a man. An American study found that bald men scored around 4-5 points higher on IQ tests than their luscious locked counterparts. Thinning hair is not only a tell-tale sign of a past pregnancy for women, it also indicates that you have an iron deficiency.
BUSTy ISSUES
A poll in Chicago, along with a few studies, reached a conclusion that may make some women really happy. According to the study, women with larger breasts tend to have higher IQs, than those with smaller breasts!
GETTInG mOUTHy People with pale mouths have very little emotional energy, while rosy lipped ones are warm and friendly. Smaller lipped people are said to be self-absorbed, but larger lipped ones have a very controlling personality. Face reading techniques also say that thicker lips indicate stronger people, while those with lips curved downwards are discontent and those with lips curved up, are lucky. If you’re unemotional, you probably have narrow lips!

Matcha tea, which originated in Japan, has been consumed in The Far East for years and is nothing short of a health elixir. Shirley Mistry tells you about this tea, which is quickly becoming a super-food across the world
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2014
WHat iS MatcHa tea? Matcha tea, a type of green tea that originated in Japan, is considered to be the best type of green tea to consume. Matcha tea is available in a powdered form, so you end up consuming the entire leaf, as opposed to just water that has been steeped with tea leaves. This means that you get all the nutrients of the tea, instead of just a fraction of nutrients that you get when you drink tea that has been brewed. In fact, to get the same level of nutrients that you do by drinking one glass of matcha tea, you will have to drink over 10 glasses of regular green tea. Made from the extremely nutritious young leaves of a plant called Camellia sinensis, the leaves are steamed before they are ground to a very fine powder. Identifiable by its vivid, almost lurid green colour, matcha tea is a great source of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Matcha tea is nothing short of a wonder food. Take a look at the several health benefits that the tea provides. lowers cholesterol: The way in which matcha tea helps control cholesterol is still being researched, but studying a group of people who drink matcha tea regularly has shown that they have lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, as compared to people who dont drink matcha tea. Healthy heart: Another study revealed that men who drink matcha tea regularly, have a 11% lower chance of suffering from heart diseases than men who don’t consume the healthy Japanese tea. lose the fat: Matcha tea helps improve your metabolism and helps your body burn fat about four times faster. While you can’t survive on just matcha tea, a cup or two, supplemented by exercise and a healthy diet, can help you lose weight much faster, without the side-effects that are associated with several weight loss diets that promise quick results. Keep calm: For centuries, the Chinese and Japanese have consumed matcha tea to calm themselves. It contains Ltheanine, an amino acid that helps create alpha waves in your brain, which in turn keep you calm, without any of the side effects that you might

squint less! Are you wondering how squinting is related to back pain? The more you squint, the more you will lean forward, even if it is subconsciously. Instead of leaning forward to see clearly or reaching out for your keyboard, adjust the keyboard and monitor accordingly to save your back.

PMs or Pregnancy? We’re sure that most of you didn’t know that PMS and pregnancy have a lot of the same symptoms. Shirley Mistry suggests you take this quiz to find out if you can tell one from the other
7
Keep things Close Your mouse should be closer to you than your keyboard, but make sure that the two are not too far apart. Reaching too far for your mouse can put your shoulders in awkward positions and injure your back.
don’t leAn The easiest way to keep back pain at bay at work is to make sure that you’re not sitting too close to or too far away from your computer. Your monitor should be a few inches above eye level so that your head stays straight. It should also be around an arm’s length away from you, so that you’re not leaning in too close to the screen.
F
ortunately or unfortunately, there is no way of predicting whether you are PMS-ing or are pregnant until the nth moment, as the symptoms and emotions you experience during both are similar, if not almost the same! However, there are minute variations that can help you determine which of the two situations you are caught in the middle of. Take our quiz to find out how informed you are. 1. When you are experiencing PMS, you will want to urinate more frequently, especially at night. a. True. b. False. 2. Craving salty or sweet food is common only during PMS. a. True. b. False.
Move it Don’t sit still at your desk all day. We’ve told you time and again how bad sitting in the same position for too many hours can be for you and we’ll tell you again. Walk around for a couple of minutes at regular intervals through the day in order to keep your muscles active and avoid back pain.
3. You suffer from back pain, originating from your abdomen, when you are PMS-ing. a. True. b. False.
9 stretCh it out When you’re at your desk for hours on end, it is unlikely that you will feel the strain that you’re putting on your shoulders. Stretch your shoulders from time to time to stop them from cramping up and causing back pain.

SYMPToM
While you might wash your hands before eating, you could still be ingesting germs without realising it. Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to find out whether you need to pay a little more attention to your hygiene
Are your nails so long, that food and dirt particles constantly get
around your lips? a. Yes. b. No.
you eat them? a. No. b. Yes.
If you have long hair, do the ends of your hair constantly come in contact with the area
When you are eating raw fruits, do you make sure that you wash them thoroughly before
Do you often eat food that has been left uncovered and out in the open?
10
Cross it out Don’t cross your legs. We know that this can sometimes be the comfiest position to sit in, but you have to form the habit of sitting with your feet planted firmly on the ground. Crossing your legs leads to a buildup of pressure in your legs, which will affect your back in the long run.
Are you ingesting germs? collected under them? a. Yes. b. No.
5. Slight bleeding or spotting is normal when you are PMS-ing. a. True. b. False. 6. You develop an aversion to certain smells and tastes when you are PMS-ing. a. True. b. False. 7. You may suffer from regular bouts of diarrhoea when you are pregnant. a. True. b. False.
a. Yes. b. No. Do you rinse your bottles with fresh drinking water instead of tap water? a. Yes. b. No.
Mostly As The next time you catch a cold, blame your bad habits for making you sick. Your nails collect bacteria and germs — especially if they are long — and if you bite your nails, you’re going to end up ingesting these germs. Keep your hair away from your lips, because the ends are often dirty and can deposit germs in and around your mouth. Also, remember to keep food covered and wash all raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly before eating them. Mostly Bs You don’t need to worry about ingesting germs, because your habits ensure that you stay germ-free. Try to keep your nails short, don’t let your hair touch your mouth and cover your food. You also wash bottles with drinking water — which is an important tip that not many people know about. Washing bottles with tap water comes with risk of ingesting unsafe water — which might contain germs.

« quick quiz to know yourself
Do you often bite your nails? a. Yes. b. No.
4. You experience severe mood swings when you are pregnant. a. True. b. False.
Are you just unwell? Since symptoms such as cramps, headaches and nausea are commonly associated with PMS, it is difficult to draw a distinction between whether you are undergoing PMS or are suffering from health problems such as a stomach infection or a chronic migraine. The easiest way to differentiate is to keep track of the days that you are most likely to experience PMS. If you find this difficult to remember or note down, download one of the several free mobile applications that help you keep track of your period, fertility window and days when you are likely to suffer from PMS. This way, you can avoid taking strong medication for what may simply be a common PMS symptom and it will be easy to pin-point a bout of nausea to PMS or the Chinese take-out you treated yourself to the previous night.
PMS
PregnAnCY
Frequent urination at night
While you may want to urinate more frequently in general, it has got nothing to do with your PMS, and you certainly won’t want to urinate more frequently only at the night.
Frequent urination, caused by increased physical pressure on your bladder is common during pregnancy, especially at night.
Food cravings
When you are experiencing PMS, you are more likely to crave either salty or sweet food.
When you are pregnant, you will crave food that you either disliked earlier, or didn’t really care much for. You will also crave weird food combinations, such as pickles and ice cream, instead of simply craving certain kinds of foods.
Moods swings
When you are PMS-ing, it is common to feel extremely moody and undergo bouts of irritation, anger and sadness.
on the other hand, if you are pregnant, you will be more sensitive and have heightened emotions at all times.
Slight bleeding or spotting
This is extremely rare when you are undergoing PMS, but it does occur.
When you are pregnant, light spotting in the early stages of your pregnancy is considered to be quite normal.
Food aversions
Another rare symptom of PMS, this hardly affects you, barring the occasional dislike towards a certain smell or type of food.
This is extremely common during pregnancy. You will find yourself disliking smells and tastes that were acceptable to you hitherto — to the extent that you will feel nauseous or might even want to leave the offensive area immediately.
Bowel movements
If you are PMS-ing, you might experience either constipation or diarrhoea or both, but it will not be consistent.
When you are pregnant, you are most likely to feel constipated for long periods of time. But, if you experience frequent diarrhoea, it might be a sign of an underlying disease, so visit your gynaecologist.
Tender/ sore breasts
This is a common PMS symptom and will pass when you start menstruating.
Tender or sore breasts last throughout your pregnancy.
Back pain
Back pain, that feels like it is originating from your abdomen or your pelvic region is a sign of PMS.
The back pain associated with pregnancy grips your lower back, rather than your abdomen.
Cramps
Cramps differ in severity from person to person, but they are sure to affect you at some point.
While mild stomach cramps are common during the initial stages of pregnancy, they won’t last throughout your term.

So, we bring you some easy exercises that you can perform when you are at work. These exercises cannot replace a full-fledged workout, but they will keep you active and energetic through the day. So, give them a try.

For tHe batHroom break Grip the edge of a basin or a sturdy platform with both your hands. Raise your leg and bend your knee, so that your heel touches your bottom. Hold this position for a few seconds and then slowly place your leg back on the floor. Repeat with the other leg. This exercise will work your calves, thighs and glutes.
tHe subtle stretcHes We love these stretches, because you can perform them while you’re working at your desk or even when you are sitting in a meeting. To give your calves a workout,
stretch your feet and lift your legs in the air. Start rotating your ankles clockwise. After a few minutes, start moving them anticlockwise. You can also stretch your back and shoulders by alternating between rolling your shoulders forwards and backwards. Top this off by rotating your head and neck in a circular manner and your shoulders, neck and back will feel instantly relaxed.
raise tHe rooF This might seem like a dance move and might even be a little embarrassing, so we recommend that you go to a solitary spot if you want to try it. When you bring up one leg, push both your hands up in the air, as through you are lifting a barbell. Bring them down to your shoulders as you put your leg back on the ground and then repeat the motion with your other leg.
bicep curl This is such a simple, office-friendly exercise, that we are surprised that it is not more popular. All you need to do is sit in your chair and perform bicep curls, using one-litre bottles instead of weights. To work
Several people want to squeeze a round of exercise into their day no matter where they are, and luckily for them, there are several office exercises to help them do this. Dev Goswami brings you a list of five-minute exercises that you can perform at work out the muscles in your neck and chest, you can also hold one bottle in each hand, place them near your shoulders and raise them in the air as you would with a barbell. Another great exercise you can try, is the lateral arm raise. Hang both your arms by the sides of your chair, while holding a 1-litre bottle in each hand. Now, raise your arms so that they are parallel to the floor and perpendicular to your body.
leg raises in a cHair Sit straight, in a chair that has no wheels. If you can’t find a chair without wheels, you can still perform this exercise, but make sure to hold on to your desk so that you don’t slip. Place your feet firmly on the floor with your knees bent at a 90° angle. Raise your right leg in front of you, straighten your knee and bring your leg parallel to the floor. Hold this position for a few seconds before going back to the starting position and repeating it with your other leg. If you find a chair without wheels, you can raise both your legs together. However, this is quite intense and you might end up pulling a muscle in your thigh. So, start slow and work your way up.

Your timeline to kicking the butt You might be aware of the risks of smoking, but did you know that the benefits of quitting can start taking effect in as little as 20 minutes? Read on, as Dev Goswami tells you about the positive effects of quitting smoking
I
f warnings on cigarette packets and various studies haven’t convinced you to quit smoking yet, you need to read this article. We’re sure that you know about the dangers that smoking poses to your lungs and heart. So, instead of repeating ourselves, we’re going to give you a timeline, where we’re telling you how your body benefits when you stay away from the cancer stick.
First 20 minutes: Within the first 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate will start returning to normal. This happens even when you are a smoker. Observe the way you feel around 15-20 minutes after smoking a cigarette — you’ll feel much more at ease, physically. two hours: Two hours after you quit, your blood pressure will return to normal, which also means that blood circulation to all your organs will improve. This is also when you’ll start experiencing the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, which include frustration and cravings. It is likely that you will end up smoking another cigarette after the twohour mark, so make sure that you build willpower. 12 hours: By now, the level of one of the most harmful chemicals that tobacco smoke contains — carbon monoxide — starts to decrease. It is carbon monoxide that, indirectly, causes most of the cardiovascular problems associated with smoking. 24 hours: Whether you believe it or not, a mere day after you quit smoking, your risk of suffering from a heart attack will reduce. The risk of a heart attack is quite high amongst
smokers, as compared to non-smokers. So, this is an important benefit. two days: You know how you lose your sense of taste when you smoke? Well, a couple of days after you quit, you can look forward to all your senses functioning normally. three days: By now, the nicotine has left your system. Unfortunately, this also means that you will be battling the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. Headaches and nausea are some common issues that you will have to deal with. Find a support system among your friends and family in order to ensure that you don’t go back to smoking. a month: While these effects might take place earlier in some cases, once you go a month without smoking, you can look forward to feeling more energised, with and better stamina. You will be able to perform physical activities without feeling tired and sick. This is because your blood circulation improves and your lungs start getting stronger. Nine months: A month after you quit smoking, your body slowly starts rebuilding and repairing itself — a process that can take up to nine months. Your lungs start functioning to their full capacity, which helps reduce the risk of infection. You will also get relief from smoker’s cough and any shortness of breath you may have experienced will disappear as well. By the end of nine months, all the withdrawal symptoms will have disappeared. But, remember that if you are a heavy smoker, the withdrawal effects can last for several months.
>> The benefits of kicking the butt can start in as little as 20 minutes and last for a long, long time One year: You should always celebrate a year of kicking the butt. And, as if nature was rewarding you, studies have shown that a year of not smoking reduces your risk of suffering a heart attack. It gets cut down to half of what it was when you used to smoke.
However, in certain cases, this might take 1015 years to happen.
Five years: Suffering from a stroke is another major risk that smokers face. But, five years after your quit, your risk of suffering from a stroke drops to that of a non-smoker.
15 years: Studies have shown that 15 years after you quit smoking, your risk of a heart attack will be the same as that of a non-smoker.
ten years: Your risk of suffering from cancers, especially lung cancer, is considerably reduced.
« Know more: world Hepatitis day
Since, World Hepatitis Day is around the corner, two studies were conducted by different health centers to find out India’s positioning in terms of the hepatitis virus. Yamini Walia finds out more the studies Metropolis healthcare Ltd. The first study, conducted by Metropolis Healthcare Ltd., concluded that Generation X (those born between the early ’60s and early ’80s) is at risk of hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The study was conducted across major cities of India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Hepatitis B is an infectious, inflammatory condition of the liver that is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The virus spreads due to exposure to infectious blood, vaginal fluid and semen. In Mumbai, the study included 78,102 samples, out of which 20.28% samples tested positive for hepatitis B. The survey also unveiled the occurrence of hepatitis B among children. Over 32.74% of children who participated in the study suffered from the symptoms of the virus. The second largest infected samples belonged to people in the age group of 20 to 40 years.
>> Find out what two new studies have to say about hepatitis One of the most significant findings of the survey was that 17.97% of the total sample were affected by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, and can ultimately lead to liver cirrhosis, fibrosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. The age group of 20 to 30 years was found to be most affected by hepatitis C. The virus commonly spreads through exposure to infected blood.
srL diagnostics The second study, conducted by SRL Diagnostics, found that 4% Indians are carriers of the hepatitis B virus while 1.9% Indians are infected with the hepatitis C virus. So, on the eve of World Hepatitis Day, SRL, in collaboration with a French diagnostics company Echosens, has launched a new reference test, called Echosens Fibro Meter Virus. The test aims to provide accurate and non-invasive tools for assessing liver damage. The test will be available at all Fortis laboratories and SRL diagnostics labs and is priced at `3,450. The technology is based on seven biochemical markers and also takes into account the patient’s demographic details. prevention To prevent hepatitis B and C, follow these simple steps: l Practice safe sex. l Inform your partner if you are a carrier, or try
to find out whether he/ she is a carrier. l Always use clean syringes. l Do not share a toothbrush, razor, or manicure instrument. l Get a series of shots for hepatitis B, if you are at risk. l Before opting for any type of skin perforation such as a tattoo or piercing, make sure that the equipment is well sterilised. l Refrain from consuming alcohol in excessive amounts. l Cover wounds, if you are infected.

Harrowed Hair? If you suffer from dry, brittle hair, try some of these simple kitchen remedies to make it softer and healthier, says Shirley Mistry
I
f you think that your hair looks more like straw and less like the silky mane pictured in most shampoo advertisements, chances are that you have extremely dry hair. To be specific, any hair that doesn’t have natural shine or bounce is considered to be on the drier side and if it isn’t treated in time, it can lead to excessive hair fall. While you can’t control all of the factors that lead to dry hair, including harsh climate or age, other factors, such as the excessive use of hairstyling products, dehydration and a poor diet, can be rectified. However, if you’d like to speed up your journey to healthy hair, without spending too much money on hair products or treatments, look around in your kitchen for some of these easy remedies.
Curry Leaves Curry leaves are a staple of Indian cuisine, but they are also a miracle ingredient when it comes to your hair. Rich in iron, phosphorus, calcium and vitamins, they are extremely nourishing. Heat 7-8 curry leaves in 2-3 tbsp of coconut oil. Once the leaves begin to sizzle, remove them and cool the oil, before applying it on your scalp and hair. Wrap your hair in a hot towel for 10-15 minutes, before shampooing it.
Fenugreek seeds >> If you wear closed shoes when you travel during monsoon, the dampness can cause fungal infections dear mayank, On the basis of the symptoms that you have described, it seems as though you are suffering from a fungal infection. Wearing closed shoes during monsoon is a safer option, but dark, moist places are also an ideal breeding ground for fungus. Try to change into dry shoes once you reach your destination to minimise infecting your other toes. There are several creams and solutions to help soothe the soreness and get rid of the infection. However, we suggest you consult a doctor and refrain from self-medication. Also, treat the toenails as soon as possible, because if the infection gets too severe, you may have to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the entire nail. You must also avoid touching the infected nails, as the infection can spread to other parts of your body.
Fenugreek, or methi, has been used by Indians for years as a conditioner for dull and dry hair. This age-old remedy works extremely well on dry hair. Soak 50g of fenugreek seeds overnight, in a bowl of water. In the morning, grind the seeds to make a paste, add in 4tbsp yoghurt, 1tbsp honey and a few drops of olive oil. Apply this paste onto your scalp and hair, leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse it out with a mild shampoo. Use this pack twice a week for best results. If you don’t
have the time to mix in other ingredients, applying the fenugreek seed paste directly to your scalp will also help.
appLe Cider vinegar It may seem slightly odd that vinegar has hydrating properties, but apple cider vinegar actually does help repair dry and damaged hair. Use a cotton ball to apply some apple cider vinegar onto your scalp and hair, leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. If you suffer from a sensitive or itchy scalp, you can dilute the vinegar. This remedy works as a natural conditioner, so you can also follow this step immediately after you rinse out your shampoo.
eggs Eggs have been used to treat dry hair for years and they are the most versatile ingredient when it comes to treating dry hair. Mix egg yolks with olive oil, yoghurt, honey or apple cider vinegar to make an instant hair pack. You can also apply just the egg whites to your hair, especially near the ends, to restore moisture and shine. You may want to add a few drops of fragrant oil, such as lavender or rosemary, to mask the smell of the egg, if you find it offensive.
geLatine If you suffer from dry hair that is prone to breakage, this treatment will come in handy. Gelatine helps strengthen your hair, so use this simple remedy once a week for positive results. Dissolve one sheet of gelatine in a cup of warm water and stir it till it forms a clear gel. Apply this onto your hair and scalp, leave it on for 15-20 minutes and rinse. You can also make a deep conditioning mask by adding 1tsp of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of honey to the gelatine gel.
dear Barbara, Although I have very fine hair, I have noticed that it has started taking very long to dry after I wash it. It takes longer to dry than it did a couple of months ago, and even 4-5 hours after I have washed it, it remains quite damp. While I do resort to blow drying my hair on most occasions, I find this extremely odd. Is something wrong with my hair? Should I be doing something differently? — raina saluja, goregaon dear raina, Although your issue is slightly unusual, it occurs because of a very simple problem. Damaged hair takes longer to dry, because it is holding on to the moisture for as long as it can. Hair that is healthier dries more easily, because the cuticles are stronger. Also, using a blow dryer to dry your hair may give you the desired results, but it is actually aggravating the problem, as heat tools such as flat irons and blow dryers only make your hair more dry and damaged. So, reduce the use of styling tools and follow a balanced diet. Supplement this by using a deep conditioning hair mask at home, to restore the strength of your cuticles.

ATHMANDU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday offered special prayers at Nepal's famed centuries-old Pashupatinath Temple here and "felt extremely blessed". A devout Hindu, 63-year-old Modi was at the temple of Lord Shiva for about 45 minutes on a 'Shravan ashtami' which is considered auspicious. "Felt extremely blessed on offering prayers at Pashupatinath Temple this morning," Modi tweeted after offering the puja at 5th century temple on the second and last day of his maiden trip to Nepal after assuming office in May. He donated 2,500 kgs of sandalwood to the Pashupatinath Temple which is located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Deopatan, a village 3 km northwest of Kathmandu. 150 priests participated in the special puja during which Modi performed 'rudra abhishek' and had 'panch amrit snan', a priest said later. Modi, in saffron dress, emerged from the temple wearing 'rudraksh malas'. In the visitors' book, the Prime Minister wrote that the temple is "unique". The Pashupatinath temple is dedicated to a manifestation of Shiva called Pashupati (Lord of Animals). It attracts thousands of pilgrims each year, mostly from India. There are a lot of Indian pujaris at the
temple. There is a tradition of keeping four priests and one chief priest at the temple from among the Bramhins of south India for centuries. According to legend, the temple was constructed by Pashupreksha of the Somadeva Dynasty in the 3rd century BC, but the first historical records date from the 13th century. The ascetic Pashupata sect was likely related to its foundation.
Modi meets Prachanda CPN-Maoist leader Prachanda on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that a "new chapter" has begun in Indo-Nepal ties. Prachanda, who led a decadelong armed movement before joining mainstream politics about seven years back, said he found Modi "very clear" in his mind about supporting the ongoing peace process and economic progress of Nepal. "We had a very fruitful meeting. A new initiative has begun in relations of India and Nepal. It is really historic," the former Prime Minister of Nepal, who has been a critic of India, said after the meeting with Modi during which the two discussed the current state of bilateral ties and the future. Noting that Nepal is in a "very delicate phase of transition" in terms of peace process and Constitution-making process, Prachanda said these processes should be completed successfully at the earliest. "Modiji clearly committed support to Constitution-making and concluding this process...He is very clear in his mind to support Nepal's economic prosperity and political stability. A new chapter has begun. It is really historic," said Prachanda, whose actual name is Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Higher judiciary hit by sexual harassment charge N
EW DELHI/GWALIOR: Higher echelons of judiciary were on Monday hit by allegations of sexual harassment of a senior woman judicial officer by a high court judge with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) R.M. Lodha describing it as a "very serious issue" which would be dealt with "appropriately". A woman additional district and sessions judge in Gwalior has quit her job after accusing a judge of the Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court of sexual harassment, a charge he has rejected and offered to face death penalty if found true. Justice Lodha told PTI, "it is a very serious issue. All versions will have to be taken into account. Let me go through it." He said the matter has not come up before him yet but the registry has informed him that it has received emails on the issue. He would deal with the issue appropriately when the papers are placed before him as "the matter cannot be left like this". The woman judge concerned has sent a nine-page representation to the CJI stating that the high court judge had some months ago started showing "more than normal inter-
est" in her work and had gradually started making "coloured remarks" about her. The complaint narrates an incident in February this year at the marriage ceremony of a judicial officer where the high court judge had allegedly told her in the presence of her 16-year-old daughter that her work was excellent but "you are more beautiful than your work". In December last year, the wife of a senior judicial officer had telephoned her to tell her that the judge was eager to see her perform a dance on an item song at his marriage anniversary, she said. Having refused to fulfil "the illegal and malicious aspirations" of the high court judge, she was subjected to a great deal of harassment after she was transferred last month in the middle of the academic session of her daughter to a remote place, according to her complaint. After her representation against the transfer did not succeed she had resigned on July 15 "in compelling, humiliating and disgraceful circumstances to save my dignity, womanhood, self esteem and career of my daughter", she said. The high court judge sent a letter to the Chief Justice of the Madhya
Pradesh High Court today describing the allegations as "totally false" and expressing his willingness to face probe by the CBI or any other agency. "If any allegation is proved I am ready even to face death penalty," the judge said although he added he did not want to face any trial by any court.
The high court judge's letter has been forwarded to the CJI by the Chief Justice of the MP High Court. Meanwhile, a group of women activists led by former additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising called a press conference in New Delhi to demand impeachment of the high court judge and a thorough investigation into the complaint.
I am Indian first, then Rajasthani: CJI NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha on Monday took strong exception to a plea that he should recuse himself from hearing an inter-state dispute involving Rajasthan as he hailed from the state. "I am born in India and I am an Indian first more than Rajasthani," Justice Lodha said when senior advocate Harish Salve wondered whether the CJI would recuse from the case. "I am sorry to hear this particularly if it is coming from a senior advocate and a person of such a vast experience," the CJI said when the matter relating to water dispute among northern states was
mentioned before the bench. Salve then clarified that he has no problem if the matter is being heard by the CJI and said that it would set up a good precedent.

Status Quo Or Rate Cut? Third Bi-monthly RBI Monetary Policy Review Today
By A Business Reporter
T
he Reserve Bank may maintain the status quo on interest rate in its bi-monthly monetary policy review to be unveiled today amid apprehensions that deficient rainfall may further push up food inflation. The food inflation remaining over 8% mark will weigh heavily on the RBI, which has been maintaining that containing inflation is its top priority. Prices of some of the food articles like tomato, onion, potatoes are still quite above normal. With monsoon being below normal, there is a fear that price situation, especially food inflation, may further deteriorate in the coming days. Monsoon deficiency stood at 23% in at the end of July. However, some believe a downward tinkering with the rates is on the cards. State Bank of India (SBI) Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said the RBI is likely to keep interest rate intact in the monetary policy review. “I think status quo (in policy rate) is more likely,” she said. However, there are expectations that there could be some announcement in term of liquidity enhancement. “There may not be any action on interest rate front but there could be some action which will induce additional liquidity into the system,” Oriental Bank of Commerce Chairman and Managing Director S L Bansal said. HDFC Bank Deputy Managing Director Paresh Sukthankar said: “Our view is that policy rates are likely to remain roughly stable.” He further said: At least, the
assumption that we are built in to for the GDP growth in this year, we are counting on major tail winds from interest rate reduction. The pick-up in the economy that we are anticipating is really going to be driven more by the policy environment and the investments picking up but not necessarily on the back of lower interest rates.” According to Indian Overseas Bank, interest rates will remain same in this policy, but going forward there would be a downward bias. In the last policy review in June, RBI chose not to tinker with the policy rate. It was the second consecutive time that RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan kept interest rates unchanged. The repo rate, at which the RBI lends to banks, was retained at 8% and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) was kept unchanged at 4%. The statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), the mandatory amount of bonds lenders must park at the RBI, was cut by 0.5% to 22.5% of their net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) with effect from June 14. Bank of America-Merill Lynch said it expects the rate cut to happen only in December, if the monsoon normalises to cool down inflation, or early 2015 in case prices rise prolongs. “We continue to expect the Governor to be on hold on August 5...The RBI will be on long hold till it is clear that inflation is truly coming off,” it said. “The RBI is likely to leave rates unchanged despite easing inflation... No hurry to ease rates,” DBS said. It said the macroeconomic back-
drop is looking better on most counts since the last monetary policy review in June and specifically mentioned a stability in the industrial growth saying it is only expected to consolidate over the next few quarters. However, the industry is pitching for a rate cut to boost industrial activities. Exhibiting signs of revival, India’s manufacturing activity, gauged by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), had risen to 19-month high of 4.7% in May on account of improved output from mining, power and capital goods sector. Besides improved industrial activity, retail inflation fell to a 30month low of 7.31% in June as prices of food items, including vegetables, came down. Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation in June fell to 5.43% after rising to a five-month high in the previous month. Committed to keeping the economy on a disinflationary course, considering CPI inflation at 8% by January 2015 and 6% by January 2016, RBI said that further policy tightening will not be warranted if the economy stays on this course. “On the other hand, if disinflation, adjusting for base effects, is faster than currently anticipated, it will provide headroom for an easing of the policy stance,” it had said. However, yesterday the markets flared on rumours that a surprise may unfold as a downward tinkering with the rates is on the cards. On this expectation the BSE Sensex recovered 242 points to close at 25,723, while the NSE Nifty gained 81 points to close at 7,683.

Subrata Roy Sahara’s Business Acumen At Forefront To be relocated to the Tihar’s conference room today, the Sahara boss will personally negotiate deals for sale of group’s international properties By A Business Reporter
S
ahara Founder and Chairman Subrata Roy Sahara will be relocated to the conference room at Tihar Jail today. On 22nd July, the Supreme court had lifted the hitherto imposed embargo on the sale/mortgage of the three overseas hotel properties of Sahara. However as Roy was under severe physical restrictions causing impediments in participating in these deals; and due to total absence of Subrata Roy Sahara, many potential deals were hesitant and were staying away from Sahara. Now that he is back at the helm of the group’s business affairs, Sahara is open to diverse financial options vis-a-vis its international properties and will start discussions with interested parties, says a note issued by his advocate Gautam Awasthi According to him “Roy’s business acumen and authority on financial matters is of critical importance and his actual presence at the helm of negotiations will help the group in securing a better deal at a faster pace. Actually, it is now that the work begins for collecting the remaining bail amount out of the total Rs.10000 crores. Sahara will
try its best to end this deadlock that has stagnated due to the embargo imposed on Sahara’s properties since November 2013 and Roy’s incarceration for the last five months.” “The funds arranged from these deals will be deposited only and only to honour the order of the Honorable Court only, as otherwise there is no liability towards any esteemed investor pending with Sahara, and these payments will actually be an instance of double payment against single liability”, he adds. Awasthi believes” Sahara is confident that the amount of Rs. 8700 crores lying with SEBI and all the other amounts Sahara has had to deposit, will all eventually come back to Sahara, once SEBI first starts and then completes the verification of investors as well as refunds made by Sahara to its 93% investors”.

am Ved Society for Performing Arts presented the 24th Raindrops dance festival in association with Bhavan's Cultural Centre at their auditorium in Andheri. It was thrilling to watch young talented dancers trying to do their best in varied classical dance styles. The two day festival featured six dancers – Shweta Prachande and Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala for Bharata Natyam, Gauri Sharma Tripathi and Preeti Sharma for Kathak, Mitali Raul for Odissi, and Payal Ramchandani for Kuchipudi. This festival is organised every year during the monsoon by accomplished Kathak exponent Uma Dogra. It is a daring venture to organise the festival during the slack monsoon season. The best dancer of the festival was Shweta Prachande, her "joie-devivre" style of performing was evident in all the items commencing with the Mallari and concluding the Balamauralikrishna Thillana. The number 'Indendu Vachichitivira' was noteworthy for its natural expressional quality Shweta is privileged to seek guidance from the veteran exponent Pridarshini Govind. Mitali Raul's Odissi was pleasing to quite an extent, particularly the Khamaj Pallavi, pertaining to typical characteristic movements of the Odissi

style, danced to fine melody and rhythm. One can expect better expressional quality in the Oriya number Mitali is the disciple of accomplished: exponent Jhelum
Paranjape. Payal Ramchandani, disciple of Padmashri Guru Jayarama Rao and Vanashree Rao rendered an exquisite Kuchipudi recital, noteworthy for its typical movements and natural flair for 'abhinaya' which was evident in the 'Javali Samay Idi Ra Ra'. Payal was impressive in the rhythmic patterns in the rim of the brass plate in the Tarangam, an extract from Srimad Narayana. While Gauri Sharma Tripathi's was impressive and dramatic in the theatrical interpretation of the Daksha Yagna wherein Lord Shiva is not invited and Parvati indulges in self-immolation due to embarassment. Preeti Sharma's kathak was pleasing for its stylistic quality but her expressional number did not take over beyond a point. The last dancer of the festival Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala's performance was noteworthy for the sincere quality of technique and command over the Bharata Natyam style which was evident in the Nartana Ganapati and the interpretation of the goddess Kamakshi. Parvathi is a reputed mentor based in Chennai. On the whole it was a lively festival befitting the monsoon.

K
alabharati will feature two senior musicians in a Sunday morning concert - Sitarist Shailaja Situt and vocalist Nareshkumar Malhotra Situt has spent years mastering the Sitar. She first learnt from the Late Jiyalal Basant who was a versatile musician. Later on, she trained under the most venerable 'maihar gharana doyenne' Annapurna Devi. Situt has performed all over India. Situt has benefited immensely through her interaction with tabla player Sapal Jijina. “He helped me develop my instinct for rhythm,” she said. She has been a member of the teaching faculty at the music department of the Mumbai University. She played the raga 'Lalit', one of the most beautiful morning melodies. This raga is difficult to master because of the absence of the note P and presence of both the 'shuddha' M and 'teevra' m. Yet when sung or played with correct emphasis on the notes, it produces a mag-

oshter Boyz', a Shreyas Talpade production directed by debutant Sameer Patil, is a bizarre satirical black comedy on family planning and the sterilisation campaign that was so evident in the Sanjay Gandhi regime a few decades back. Dilip Prabhavalkar (Deshmukh), a village elder, Sadanand Kulkarni a village teacher (Hrishikesh Joshi) and Arjun, a dashing village yokel (Aniket Vishwasrao), get into a jam when their faces are used to promote family planning by sterilisation due to an error by the Health Department officials of the village. ical and soothing effect. Situt valiantly tried to achieve this impact through her performance. She was accompanied on the tabla by Vinayak Naik. Fifty three-year-old Nareshkumar Malhotra is a veteran artiste of the Indore gharana. His father Makharam Malhotra was a singer of devotionals. “There was no classical singer in our family before myself but we had a tradition of Kirtana singers. The 'kirtan' is a devotional song sung with intense fervour and dedication,” said Malhotra in a telephonic interview from Delhi. After
completing his graduation from Rohtak, he did his M Phil from the Delhi University. “I was always impressed by the singing style of the Late Ustad Amir Khan who has now become some sort of a cult figure for musicians across India. It was my good fortune that his ace disciple Tejpal Singh kindly accepted me as his pupil. I have been his humble student from 1984,” he said. The Indore gharana is known for its dominant approach to the presentation of 'khyal'. “Notes are not sung in their naked or bare form. They come with the clusters of microtones,” said Malhotra. He sang the raga 'Komal Rishabh Asavari' which has a lot of pathos. He could communicate that feeling through his music and it did captivate the listener. The consonance between the flat r and flat d lends it a special appeal, and the flat n gives an added edge to the raga.He was accompanied on the tabla by the senior percussionist Rajendra Antarkar and on the harmonium by Anant Joshi.

‘Gholat Ghol’ completes century
Delightful comedy in ‘Poshter Boyz’ the laughing stock of the village when Arjun’s girlfriend's father refuses to let Arjun marry his daughter (Pooja Sawant), the teacher's wife (Neha Joshi) walks out on him and Deshmukh's groom for their daughter calls off the engagement. The trio then try to clear
their cause and try to get justice from all quarters including the judiciary, the media, the government machinery and finally stage a dharna which reaches the Chief Minister (Shreyas Talpade) who publicly apologises for the gaffe and the embarrassment caused to them by also giving
them a monetary settlement. The performances by the three lead players led by Dilip Prabhavalkar, Hrishikesh Joshi and Aniket Vishwasrao are the life of the film. Uday Sabnis, Bharat Ganeshpure, Anshuman Vichare, Bhagyashree Rane, Madhav Abhyankar, Suhas Paranjape, Sameer Patil, support well. Murli Sharma and Ashwini Kalsekar shine in brief roles. Shreyas Talpade’s cameo is impressive. Pushpank Gawdes cinematography is top rate. There is no scope for music. Slickly edited, the film is technically superb. A definite not-to-bemissed film.
The 100th performance of the popular Sanjay Narvekar play ‘Gholat Ghol’ was held at Shivaji Mandir in the august presence of MNS chief Raj Thackeray and actor Vikram Gokhale among others. A purse of Rs 1,00,000 was handed over to the social organisation Anandvan started by Baba Amte and now headed by Dr Vikas Amte and Bhartitai Amte.
High praise for ‘Rege’
Veteran Bollywood superstar Jeetendra was mighty impressed with Abhijit Panse’s directorial debut ‘Rege’ after he saw the film at a special screening at a suburban preview theater. “In spite of belonging to a genre which is done to death in Bollywood, ‘Rege’ which is the first Marathi movie to explore this theme has been successful to present a new facet of the subject. “It is the most realistic film I have ever seen,” said Jeetendra. ‘Rege’ stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Pushkar Shrotri, Santosh Juvekar and debutant Aroh Velankar.

was opened on July 23. The Indian contingent, led by flag bearer Seema Punia, who won a silver in women's discus throw, took part in the closing ceremony, all of them wearing track suits. CGF chief Prince Imran described the Glasgow 2014 as the best ever Games. "Scotland and Glasgow, you have really delivered in every aspect the best Games ever," he said in his brief speech to the applause of the crowd. "We have seen superb sporting action supported by fantastic organisation. Glasgow you were pure, dead brilliant." Rhythmic gymnast from Wales,
Francesca Jones, who won one gold and five silver, was awarded the David Dixon Award for the best athlete in the Glasgow Games. CGF chief Prince Imran presented the award to her. Australian Minogue's performance symbolised the transfer of baton to Australia's Gold Coast, which will host the 21st edition from April 4-15, 2018. The show, with the theme 'All Back To Ours', opened with Scottish singer and actress Lulu coming out onto the starshaped stage amid a mass of tents around the National Stadium at hampden Park and belting her famous 'Shout'.
CWG badminton I am still waiting for that promised job: Anisa Sayyed bronze a lifetime N achievement: Gurusaidutt By Abhishek Hore
N
EW DELHI: RMV Gurusaidutt said the Commonwealth Games bronze medal has helped him regain belief in himself as he was battling fitness doubts ahead of the match. Guru had to play three gruelling matches in a little over a day and the Indian said he was "tensed and doubtful" about his fitness before his bronze medal contest against Rajiv Ouseph but he decided to go without any expectations. “It was really close match. The conditions are very slow here and I had to play a lot of rallies. I was not expecting to win. I just wanted to stick to my strategy and kept telling myself to keep fighting. It was extremely tiring because I had a close match on Friday night against top seed Cheng Wei Feng and then in the morning I played Derek Wong and then within few hours I had to play the bronze medal match."
EW DELHI: Anisa Sayyed doesn't need to wait for long to succeed in a shooting range but her wait for a job seems to be turning into an endless one with the Haryana government dillydallying for the past three years, leaving the champion shooter with no option but to vent her frustration. The multiple Commonwealth Games winner, who has clinched a silver in the just-concluded edition in Glasgow to go with her recordbreaking double gold in Delhi four years ago, though, is still living in hope. "I have been waiting for three years, waiting for that promised job. But it has still not seen the light of the day. If they think I don't deserve this then they should not keep me waiting. That's not fair on an athlete who has and continues to strive for international success," Anisa told PTI. The 33-year-old Anisa took silver in the women's 25 metre pistol event of the Commonwealth Games at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre near Glasgow on July 26. In the same event, the gold was won by her "good friend" Rahi Sarnobat.
Shooter Anisha Sayyed who won a Silver Medal at Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 with her husband Mubarak Sayyed after returning in Faridabad. Competing with a friend for the top prize is not a problem, but waiting for something that she richly deserves does make Anisa sad. "The file has not been processed since 2011, I am still hoping that we will get something out of it. I have met the chief minister (Bhupinder Singh Hooda) twice and he asked me to only concentrate in shooting, and the rest will be taken care of. "Because of this I quit my job with Rail-
ways right after the Delhi CWG in 2010 and also did not show interest in a job offered by Maharashtra government. Looking back I think those were mistakes," she said. "I seriously hope that something will happen before we leave for the World Championships or at least the Asian Games," Anisa added. CWG done and dusted with, Anisa, expectedly, has trained her eyes on the upcoming World Championships, and she hopes to finetune her techniques and work out the kinks before she sets foot in Granada, Spain for the September 6-20 event, which will be immediately followed by the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. In the worlds, 64 quota places will be up for grabs for the 2016 Rio Olympics, and she knows its significance too well. "Right now I am not thinking about quota or medal. My target is to improve my technique as much as possible and the rest follows. In the World Championships, the scores are often higher than even Olympics, so you can imagine the competition. We are hoping to win medals at all the five events," Anisa said. "My grip has also not come yet, we got it done in Munich."

Mehta, Malik let off for lack of evidence
GLASGOW: IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta and wrestling referee Virender Malik, who were arrested on different reasons, were released after charges against them were dropped for lack of evidence, putting an end to their unsavoury ordeal. The charges against both the Indian officials were dropped and the matter did not come up for hearing at the Sheriff's Court, according to an Indian High Commission official. The decision to let off the two officials came as huge relief for the Indian contingent, which had to face a lot of embarrassment on the last day of the 20th Commonwealth Games because of the development. While Mehta was arrested for alleged drunken driving, Malik, who is not a part of the official contingent was facing a more serious charge of alleged sexual assault. The duo was, however, not staying with the official 215strong contingent which was putting up at the Games village. Both of them were reportedly lodged at a local hotel. "Charges against both of them have been dropped due to lack of evidence. They have been released without any charges being framed," the High Commission official said. The Indian Consulate in Edinburgh was liaising with the police on the matter. The Consulate in Edinburgh had deputed an official to Glasgow to keep in close touch with the police authorities to ascertain full factual details of the case. Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association secretary Anandeshwar Pandey, who is part of the IOA delegation and was at the court, said the officials were released after primary investigation. "During primary investigation, they (Scotland Police) couldn't find enough evidence to frame charges. So they were let off without being produced before the court," Pandey said.

Indian men crush Canada TROMSO (NORWAY): Led by Parimarjan Negi's fine victory on the top board, the Indian men cruised to a 3.5-0.5 victory over Canada in the second round of the 41st Chess Olympiad. Negi defeated Anton Kovalyov from the white side of a Sicilian Taimanov. After enjoying an opening advantage, the Indian opened up the centre for complications and benefitted when Kovalyov blundered a piece to go down. While Krishnan Sasikiran also used his white pieces to perfection against Leonid Gerzhoy on the third board, scoring a fine attacking victory against the King's Indian defence, B Adhiban came up with a sterling effort to beat Bator Sambuev who played the white side of a Sicilian Grand Prix attack. Grandmaster S P Sethuraman was in a spot of bother and then stood better on the second board and eventually held his forte together to get a draw and ensured India won with a massive margin. As if taking a cue from the men, the Indian eves followed suit in a 3.5-0.5 demolition of Denmark in the women's Olympiad, which is being held simultaneously. Grandmaster and highest rated Indian girl D Harika defeated Sandra De Blecourt on the top board, while Eesha Karavade and Mary Ann Gomes also pitched in with fine victories over Miriam Olsen and Thomine Stolberg-Rohr, respectively.Esmat Guindy proved to be the saving grace for the Danish women as she held Tania Sachdev to a creditable draw. India lost by 266 runs at Southampton after earning a 95-run victory in the second Test and Strauss lauded the English effort. "It was a good comeback from that Lord's defeat. That was a bitter pill for England to swallow because everything was in their favour and they squandered that chance. So there was real pressure on them at Southampton and they put on a near-perfect performance. From the moment they won the toss and elected to bat, they put India under pressure. Their captain is back in form, Ian Bell is getting runs, James Anderson and Stuart Broad bowled better as well. It you have a perfect template of how to win a Test match, that was it," said Strauss. "With this new team that England have, it is evolving Test by Test and it is important for senior players to show junior players the way. Until this third Test, it was the other way round and that's not ideal. It was the reason why England haven't won more Test matches offlate and Lord's was the final coffin. The senior players did their job in this third Test and I can tell you there will be a lot of confidence in their dressing room now," he added.

IN BRIEF Lyon gets one-day call up for Zimbabwe, South Africa
SYDNEY: Spinner Nathan Lyon was called up to Australia's one-day squad for their tri-series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, with Ben Cutting, Kane Richardson and Mitchell Marsh also getting the nod. Test star Lyon has not played a limited overs international since March 2012 but has been working with Sri Lankan spin great Muttiah Muralitharan and was preferred to Xavier Doherty. "Nathan Lyon has done very well in Test match cricket, but first came under notice through his performances in short form cricket," said national selector Rod Marsh. "He bowled well in last year's (One Day) Cup competition and having not played an ODI since early 2012, the National Selection Panel is keen to see him in action again."

The series is expected to provide international exposure to the young players just before the Asiad in South Korea from September 19 to October 4. In this regard, the core probables for the Asian Games team will find the series an appropriate opportunity to test their skills against an international opponent.
Sporting coach Bruzon happy with pre-season preparation
PANAJI: Sporting Clube de Goa coach Oscar Bruzon is happy with the way the pre-season preparation is progressing. "The five players currently in Czech Republic is proof that we are moving in the right direction and we must continue to work hard as a group to achieve more goals," said Sporting Clube de Goa Head Coach Oscar Bruzon at the end of the second week of pre-season. Oscar was referring to the 5 SCG players, namely Keenan Almeida, Joyner Lourenco, Rowlin Borges, Ravi Kumar and Kamaljeet Singh, who are currently doing duty for the India U-23 national team on an exposure trip in the Czech Republic, which is the largest representation selected from any of the I-League clubs. Coach Oscar has plenty to smile about as he repeats the word "power", after witnessing a high intensity circuit training workout which focused on plyometric power and resistance.

His total score was 81 points, beating Karma Management’s Nitin Khot, who scored 61 points. As expected, the second weekend of GameOn! got off to a rollicking start. With over 150 participants in sports like carom, chess and table tennis, the day was filled with much excitement, enthusiasm and spirit of competition. The chess tournament witnessed a high level of tact and a great amount of mind games were being played across the boards. The men’s chess title was clinched by Lakhey Subodh from Tata Consultancy Services,
ahead of Nevgi Milind of Kotak Mahindra. The women’s title was won by Sonal Chipkar of Deloitte, while the second and third spots were bagged by Tija Thomas of TCS and Nikita Singh of Ajmera Group respectively. Game On! is the ultimate corporate sports challenge with participants from various multinational corporations across the city. The tournament is a 6 week extravaganza and will now be heading into its third weekend. Total prizes worth Rs 2 lakh are up for grabs in this second edition of the tournament. Registrations for sports such as Indoor Cricket, Badminton and Tennis are open and one can visit the website www.thesportsgurukul.com in order to register themselves.
NEW DELHI: India's quest for a maiden Commonwealth Games title remained unfulfilled after losing to Australia in the final but goalkeeper P R Sreejesh feels they have become mentally more stronger now and have shown great improvement in the justconcluded quadrennial event. India lost 0-4 to world champions Australia in the final of the Glasgow Games yesterday and squandered yet another chance to avenge upon their 0-8 thrashing at the hands of the same opponents in the 2010 Delhi edition of the Games. "We were not thinking about the Delhi Games final (going into yesterday's match). We have played Australia in the recent past and while we lost 0-4 in the World Cup, the margin was 2-4 in the league match of the Glasgow CWG. It shows that we are improving and can beat top teams like Australia in future," Sreejesh told PTI Bhasha from Glasgow.
