fter the ADC published a story of Sathaye College, Vile Parle charging its students extra fees, which provided the cue for the University of Mumbai (MU) to set up a committee to investigate the matter about the college. This University investigation also puts at risk the college's prestigious award of 'Best College' for the Academic year 20142015 which it had won last week. On June 4, 2014, as per the recommendation of the Students' Grievance Cell, the Management Council of the Mumbai University had asked the college to send a compliance report within a month and had also set up a fact finding committee. Later, on August 6, 2014, the university declared that the Sathaye college had violated the rules and collected extra fees from reserved category students. The MU had stated that the Principal has violated
the rules of the state government as well the university, and asked the Management of the college to take action against the Principal, and send its reports to the university as well as the Social Welfare Department. The Management Council had subsequently denied the college affiliation to the university, ordered the return of fees to the students and strong action against the principal, and in a case of sheer memory loss the college was named the university's best college for 2014-15. Every year the MU awards the best college award to five colleges from the city, suburbs and rural areas which are affiliated to the university. From the city colleges, Sathaye College was one of the five best colleges declared by the MU. The college was also awarded Rs 35,000 as part of the award. Santosh Gangurde, Maharastra Navnirman Sena said, “Finally the University has taken a worthy step
against the college. This college has looted the students against the rules and regulations of the University as well as did not follow the directions of central government. Though the action is to be taken, it would had been more better if the University would had not blindly declared this college as the best college of the academic year 2014-2015.” Along with the MU, even the Social Justice Department of Maharastra Government has sent an order to the University as well as the college for cancellation of the college's affiliation with the University. The department has also ordered the University to take strict action against the college principal Dr Kavita Rege. The ADC, spoke to Dr M.A.Khan, Registrar of University who said “The University has started its investigation and once the reports about the college are fnalized, the MU will take the necessary action against the college”.
Commuters avoid BEST after fare hike, prefer share autos PTI
BEST lose passengers after fare hike, share autos gain; Transport experts feel that BRTS will be a solution for commuting in the city
About BRTS
Bus Rapid Transit System is a rapid transport system which has been proposed in the year 2003 for the city, recognizing that no single mode would cater to the mobility needs of the city and that Bus forms the most critical segment of the public transport system. A segment of the road will be dedicated only for buses, on September 2012 , BEST announced that it would build BRTS with dedicated lanes on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) and will require widening the GMLR and paving the service road with concrete. The project was to start operating from 2014 and is still on hold.

T
he Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) hiked fares of regular buses has risen from Rs 1 to Rs 10 and for air conditioned buses from Rs 5 to Rs 30 which have resulted in commuters searching for options like share autos to commute. The share autos is just a rupee more than the BEST hiked fare. Another fare hike is expected in April. After the fare hike in April to Rs 8, the BEST fare would come on par with the fare of share autos in most places in the city. Sources reveal that there has been a marked drop in the commuters of the BEST, the decline has been from 42 lakh commuters everyday to 36 lakh commuters now. Commuters are showing their clear disagreement with the fare hike and according to transport experts, commuters would prefer share autos over buses as it will provide them a seamless ride without any hiccups, besides always getting a seat and also reaching the destination in time. Sudhir Badami, Transport Expert believes that the city's transport will only get better if the government initiates Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) which was proposed way back in 2003, “The increasing fares is due to the BEST not running effectively and getting stuck maximum of times in traffic. If the government proposed BRTS had introduced even after a decade, it would have been better for the res-
MUMBHAI Vikas Sabnis Congress workers protest against the BEST fare hike and demanded its withdrawal in the city on Tuesday. idents of the city.” Agitated commuters spoke to the ADC. Preeti Kulkarni, said, “People use the local and BEST as it was the cheapest way to commute. However, now after the increase in fares, I don’t think there is any difference between the share autos and BEST. Why stand at bus stops, when there are share autos. I would use share autos instead of BEST now?” Sanjay Deshpande said, “ Middle and low income people used to commute in the BEST and if the prices are increased than what is the difference between the BEST and other means of transport. The government should provide us some relief rather than stressing more on the people’s pocket. If there will be another increase on the fares I guess people will com-
pletely stop using BEST” Speaking to ADC, Thampy Kurain, General Secretary, Mumbai Autorickshaw Union, said, “Commuters are smart and realise that time is much more important than one rupee, and that is why the share autos are booming. The share autos do not stop at destinations thus making the journey seamless, also the commuter would prefer time over getting stuck over and over again.” Meanwhile on the Metro route, that is Versova to Ghatkopar, commuters are now preferring taking the metro as it is providing them more comfort. “With the increase in BEST fares, people would not want to stand in buses for half an hour without traffic journey from Versova to Ghatkopar, why would
anybody want to pay more in BEST and smell other people’s sweat in the packed BEST buses. The metro has increased the fares but still has air condition. I would anytime consider using it over BEST.” noted Bipin Shah, a resident of Andheri. The earlier BEST fares on the Versova to Ghatkopar route was from Rs 6 to Rs 25. Speaking about whether Metro will be able to solve the commuting problems of Mumbaikars, Sudhir Badami said, “Thinking Metro will solve commuting problems in the city is wrong, a 11 km track between Versova and Ghatkopar and the construction of the underground metro would take more than 70 years. As the 11 km metro took more than a decade for construction.”

Anna Hazare’s devotee will be Delhi CM
Anna Hazare
Anna Hazare has announced he will again begin the Lokpal agitation in Delhi. He is unhappy that very little progress in this regard had been made by the Congress when it was in power. He also says that the BJP too does not seem to be keen about the Lokpal. He feels one more agitation in Delhi is called for. He is likely to get a lot of assistance for his agitation. The police will give him the venue he wants and they may even give him some assistance in conducting the agitation.
Kiran Bedi
The chief minister of Delhi will be either Arvind Kejriwal or Kiran Bedi when Anna begins his fast -- maybe in Jantar Mantar. Both Kejriwal and Bedi were closely associated with Anna's civil movement. It does not matter whether BJP wins or AAP wins, Anna is certain about help from the Delhi government. It is being said that both Kejriwal or Bedi started their political career by associating themselves with Anna's civil movement. Both of them shared Anna's view that politics was dirty. The way they
Arvind Kejriwal
have finally landed up in politics shows that they used Anna to make a mark in politics. Anna was very fond of them. He was quite perturbed when Arvind Kejriwal began a political career. Anna started a political party -- the AAP. He was hopeful at least Kiran Bedi would remain with him. She caused him further disappointment when she accepted the invitation of Narendra Modi to be the BJP's candidate in the Delhi's poll. Anna said: And about them -- Kiran and Arvind -- Anna said: "I miss them".
Death sentence for rape A rape victim's trauma begins not so much when she is raped but it starts later on. If the rapist does not burn her alive, hang her from a tree, strangle her, throw her out of a moving vehicle, and lets her live, she attracts ridicule, harsh judgement, hurting remarks and prevention both at home and outisde. When a Kerala girl was raped, her folks beat her up. and they did everything possible to hush up the matter. She was locked up and she was never allowed to see anyone. And when after she was 7 months pregnant she was brought to Mumbai. She was admitted to a private hospital: She was given, according to reports, medicines. It was stated she was not operated upon. They baby came out dead. Imagine the distress of the 15year-old girl as she went through all these painful proceedings. Her suffering is still not over. The police are investigating. The poor thing will be asked questions. She cannot go back home immediately. A rapist who kills after rape is given death sentence. A rapist who lets the girl live also deserves death sentence.

plots in Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) industrial parks.
The Minister for Industries disclosed that the 21 FDI projects are real time investments and not mere signed memorandum of understandings. Desai disclosed that the Industries department in a bid to ease and boost investment flows the ministry has decided to reduce the 75 licenses required to set up industries in Maharashtra to just 25 licenses. Besides this the government has done away with the River Regulatory Zone (RRZ) policy which was proving to be a hindrance in setting up nonpolluting industrial units along rivers in the state. Commenting upon his ministrys move to seek infor-
mation about unused MIDC plots in the state, Desai clarified that many industrialists have not utilised the land allotted to them for the last decade or so. The government is contemplating imposing monetary fines on such industries which have failed to start industries. Many of them have transferred or are using it for nonindustrial purposes. Hence the government has sought information about such industrial units from all the districts in the state. Desai disclosed that the Industries Ministry will soon organise Magnetic Maharashtra Conclave to attract investment in the state.
I know the pain of cancer, says CM Azad Shrivastav | ADC
The young minds should be aware about the consequences of consumption of tobacco products, we should reach each and every student. We should put in combined efforts and fight cancer.” Dr R A Badwe, director TMC highlighted the major causes of cancer. He said, “Tobacco consumption, obesity and infection. Seventy per cent of cancer in our county is preventive and we have to concentrate on these
cases. Tobacco should be made expensive. Also sixty five per cent is non-smoked where the compositions are not known, such things should be completely banned and the law should be strictly implicated. Footpaths should be made safer to walk and also there should be safe cycling lanes. Such things will help prevent obesity. And proper sanitation facilities should be there especially in rural areas to prevent infection.”

Small whisky shot to watchman, allows robbers to loot jewellery shop Building watchman allows robbers to rob jewellery shop for just 90ML whisky, two held By Zuber Ansari
T
he Crime Branch Unit XI has arrested two robbers including a building watchman who allegedly allowed three robbers to rob a jewellery shop which is situated inside the building just for one 90ML whisky shot. The robbers entered into the jewellery shop after breaking the watchman cabin's wall which is joined to the jewellery shop. After breaking into the shop, the robber with the help of a gas cutter broke open all the lockers and decamped with booty worth Rs 17 lakh which included gold and silver jewellery. Interestingly, after taking whisky from the robbers, the watchman dropped off to sleep, asking them to do whatever they wanted to do. Before fleeing from the spot they ask the watchman to flee with them because he would be nabbed by the cops, if he were caught sleeping in his cabin. As watchman was aware that he was just three days into the job, with both the society as well as the old watchman having no information about him, he though it would be more prudent on his part to flee with the robbers. He however parted ways with the robbers without taking any share of the robbed stuff. After the incident, on the very next day in the wee hours on January 25 when Kamal Jewellers shop owner went to open the shop he was shocked to see broken lockers of his shop including the
shattered watchman's cabin wall. He immediately informed the cops and registered the case. Both, local police station as well as Crime Branch were doing parallel investigation in the case, but when Crime Branch Unit XI rushed to do 'Punchnama' the constable in their team namely Shivaji Dahifode found one new mobile bill, and on that basis Crime Branch detected mobile EMI number and they put that on tracking. Assistant Police Inspector
(API) from Crime Branch Unit XI said, ''During the investigation, we found that the EMI number of that mobile bill is active in one mobile and that mobile location is showing in Ahmedabad. We immediately sent our team to Ahmedabad and brought the accused who was identified as Karan Bahadur and turned out to be building watchman who allowed the robbers to break into the shop.” “After we brought Bahadur in Mumbai, on his direction we nabbed another accused
Rahul Yadav who brought the Gas Cutter to break the shop lockers, but till now prime accused Kamruddin Shaikh is absconding while another accused Anwar was caught by Kalyan GRP when he was trying to flee to his native place in Uttar Pradesh during the checking at Kalyan railway station, he was stopped by a GRP constable and when they found robbed booty inside his bag, he failed to give satisfactory answer due to which he was nabbed.” Harpude added.
IN THE DOCK: Iqbal Kaskar, brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who was arrested on Tuesday, was produced before the Sewree Court yesterday on charges of extortion and assault following a complaint by an estate agent, police said.
T
he Amboli Police has arrested Bollywood music composer Ismail Darbar on Wednesday from his residence in Oshiwara after his son and his two colleagues who was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case of assault registered by an assistant director over a payment dispute. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police DN Nagar Division S Dhanedhar, “After the arrest of music director Ismail Darbar (50) we had produced him before the lower court which granted him bail.' In the similar case, on Tuesday, Darbar's son Zaid (21), his friends Nishant Singh (21) and Mohsin Khan (29) were arrested and later granted bail. The alleged incident took place at about 11 pm on Monday in the parking lot of Evershine Cosmic building in Andheri where the complainant Prashamit Choudhary stays. In his complaint,
Ismail Darbar Choudhary (29) alleged the Darbars had been repeatedly evading him after he sought his pending dues related to a project he did for them. He then went to his native place in Assam and returned Mumbai last month after recovery.

ning to expand its influence in the state, said despite Muslims constituting 11 per cent of the population none from the community was occupying any top post in the government. Lamenting poor represen-
tation of Muslims in the state police, Owaisi said, "Our boys are rotting in jails. There is a large percentage of Muslims in Maharashtra's jails. There is no representation of Muslims in police." Claiming that Muslims were being falsely implicated in terror cases, he said, "Mr Prime Minister, NIA and ATS are in your hands. BJP chief Amit Shah can be discharged from Prajapati encounter case in seven months, but the Malegaon blasts case drags on for years." Asserting that the community is as patriotic as any other, he said,"We too fought against the British and our love for our country is the same as others. Do not belittle our love for our motherland. Taking at a dig at Bollywood Sanjay Dutt for flaunting his six-pack abs during his recent release on furlough, the AIMIM leader said while the state was busy extending "preferential" treatment to the actor, children of Muslims had to "rot" in jail for years. "When our children are being falsely implicated in cases, why should we keep quiet? Sanjay Dutt is building six pack abs sitting in a Maharashtra jail, while our children are rotting there for years. When you do not have proof against them, why don't you let them go?" Owaisi said.

Prophet’s cartoon: Editor’s bail extended, says being hounded A
Mumbai court yesterday extended the the bail of the Editor of an Urdu daily, at the centre of a controversy over publishing a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad, even as she wrote a blog to admit the 'mistake' and seek 'forgiveness', while claiming she was being 'hounded and harassed'. Additional Sessions Judge A.J. Patangankar adjourned the hearing of the anticipatory bail application of Shirin Dalvi, Editor of 'Avadhnama', whose edition here has shut down after the publication of the cartoon triggered an outrage, and extended her interim protection from arrest till February 10. The Mumbai police opposed granting of pre-arrest bail to Dalvi saying it would create law and order problem as people from the Muslim community were outraged over reproduction of the cartoon published by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which was the target of a terror attack last month. "The accused, Shirin Dalvi, editor of an Urdu daily Avadhnama, has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community and granting her anticipatory bail will create law and order problem," the police told the court. Dalvi was arrested from Mumbra in neighbouring Thane district following a complaint after the cartoon was published on January 17 and released on bail by
the concerned court later. However, another case was registered against her with the N.M. Joshi Marg police station after which she approached the sessions court here last week to seek anticipatory bail, claiming the article was non-defamatory and did not hurt the religious sentiments of anybody. She also said she had already apologised for reproducing the cartoon. Islam prohibits any form of idolatry and publication of cartoons of the Prophet is considered blasphemous. The editor also told the court that she, in her official capacity, had only exercised her fundamental right to speech and expression. In a blog written for a TV news channel on Wednesday, Dalvi began with an apology for having printed the cover of Charlie Hebdo. "It was a mistake and I had no intention to hurt the feelings of my community. Like any other Muslim, I deeply respect Prophet Mohammed - sallallahu alahi wa sallam - Peace be upon Him," she said. "That said, since January 17, I am being harassed and hounded even after publishing an apology in my paper Avadhnama and other national papers. There are four cases slapped against me. I have not been able to go back home since then and my children have stopped going to college. I am an underground citizen of India," Dalvi went on to add. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

he state government is all set to reverse one more decision of the earlier Congress-NCP government. Now the Devendra Fadnavis government has decided to scrap the previous government's decision on commercial usage of land owned by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).The Congress-NCP government had decided to implement a commercial complex project with an objective of marketing the land which is under MSRTC's custody, modernisation of ST bus depots across the state, better food and beverage facilities for commuters and raising earnings from buses. However, the state government
has decided to cancel this decision. The Transport Minister Divakar Raote yesterday said that not an inch of the MSRTC land would be sold. Raote said, “The buses operated by MSRTC are the lifeline of rural Maharashtra. The MSRTC has bus stands and depots in each taluka and district. The commercial usage project was being developed on build-operatetransfer (BOT) basis to facilitate commuters to shop and eat near the bus stops. The developer, which was to be given land on rental basis for 30 years, was to ensure complete makeover of the present bus stands. But now we have decided to change the entire policy. Henceforth the MSRTC canteens will be given to women self help
groups to operate them”. “I have received many complaints about the hardships faced by the commuters due to the seats. So I have sought views from technical experts in this regard. After the consultations we have planing to fix shock absorbers to the last seats of the ST buses to avoid backbreaking journey”, he added further. "The tyres for the buses are purchased in wholesale which needs to be stopped. Purchases should be done as per need. Microchips would be fitted in the tyres so that the number of kilometers travelled can be known. Similarly, the posts of mechanics will be filled urgently. We are taking utmost care to minimize accidents and breakdown of buses,” Raote made it clear.

and bring the roast format to a country where celebrities aren’t often known to laugh at themselves. To our pleasant surprise, we managed to bring together consenting adults who were willing to be made fun of by other consenting adults in a crowd full of (wait for it) consenting adults. And if we’re honest, it was a phenomenally entertaining evening. The format was the same as any international roast i.e. insult comedy, delivered in the form of oneliners designed to be as rude as possible. few hours after you get to read this column, the heavy but low-taste campaign for the election of Delhi State Assembly would come to a grinding halt. It would leave the 1.25-crore population in the national capital to sit back for a while and decide their candidate and the party before they make a beeline at the voting booths to exercise their right to franchise on Saturday. Whom will Delhi vote for? Will it bring the HE BMC has collected this year as Janata Party (BJP) to rule it after a much as Rs. 33,514 crore. The BMC has no go but to sanction more money for completing projects undertaken last year or before. It is not difficult to see why this ever-recurring situation has arisen. What the BMC should find is why the delay is caused. Is it a fact that it is a calculated move with regard to almost all projects to cause delays which escalates costs. Finally, the municipal commissioner must make fresh efforts to avoid corruption. In almost all the departments, it is alleged, corrupt practices are going on. Perhaps there would not be any new taxation, if corruption is completely eliminated.

A near-final verdict Despite these handicaps, Delhi Assembly elections assume prime most significance. The forthcoming elections are also important as they will deliver a near-final verdict on the sway of the new leader on the block, Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the national politics. The man, who emerged from the arena of a mid-level state of Gujarat to the national stage not before two years, has almost established his sway over most of the states of India. After winning back Rajasthan, Haryana, BJP came out with fine colours in Maharashtra, though could not reach the half-way mark. It also put up an impressive show, the best so far in Jammu & Kashmir,

where the party is likely to share power with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of Mehbooba Mufti. Moreover it retained power in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with a better majority. With these results, now the BJP has almost established its control over half of the states. THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut course of Indian polity. As I had mentioned in my earlier articles in this column, the battle-lines are already drawn vivid and clear in Delhi. Here, AAP is the main challenger for the BJP with the Congress left far behind. One should not be surprised if the Congress once again fails to reach the two digit figure in the 70-member Assembly. In 2013, Congress could win only eight seats, leaving the BJP and the AAP to grab the rest of the lot. While the BJP winning 31 seats and one for its ally Akali Dal, fell short of three seats to reach the golden figure, the AAP with only 28 seats grabbed power with the ‘outside’ support from Congress. As expected the Kejriwal government did not last even two months. Surprisingly, despite winning all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, the BJP has to wage a fierce fight for the Assembly to win those four extra seats. On the other hand, the AAP is showing extra-confidence to improve its tally by seven to eight seats to retain power. It’s a Hercules task for AAP. But its young
F all thought, all life, consists in studying something only in order to earn one's bread and butter, then when can one give one's thought and mind to what one’s soul is seeking after? Among those who have a little freedom in life, who have time to think about gaining some knowledge, there are many who seek only after novelty. They think that to learn means only to get to know something they did not know before. There are very few seekers who discover that from every idea, however simple, a revelation comes when they give their mind to it, and that it then begins to teach them more and more things which they had never known. I have experienced this myself. There was a couplet of a Persian verse I had known for twelve years. I liked it, it was a simple everyday conception, but after twelve years one day a glimpse of inspiration came and that very couplet became a revelation. It seemed as if there had been a seed and then a seedling sprang from it and turned into a plant which produced fruit and flowers.
Kejriwal’s existence at stake While Kejriwal has been the unchallenged leader of the AAP and thus its Chief Ministerial candidate, the BJP has named former super-cop of Delhi, Kiran Bedi, for the post. Ironically, neither the media nor the people of Delhi have bothered to check who is the Congress’s choice, particularly when the leader of its group, Lovely Singh withdrew from the fray and decided not to contest at the last minute. The month-long campaign for the elections has been hectic, though there was a spell of cold wave in Delhi and thick fog had engulfed the city, disrupting its vehicular traffic and rail services for more than 10 crucial days. Both the BJP and the AAP declared their election manifesto recently. As expected, both parties have given tall promises and vowed to make the civic life better to live in. While the BJP has promised to provide corruption-free state administration, the AAP has stuck to its guns of providing cheap water and electricity. He had won large number of seats on his word to reduce water and electricity charges. Curiously, Kejriwal has kept his pet issue of Janalokayukta on a back burner, perhaps after realizing that it was not possible without active support of the Centre. Last time he burnt his fingers and the government as the Lt. Governor refused to allow presentation of the Janalokayukta Bill in Assembly without the nod from the Centre. He, perhaps, does not want to take any chance. In short, Saturday’s voting would decide the issue to existence for the AAP and Kejriwal’s leadership, while it would give verdict on people’s approval to Modi’s 9-month rule in the country. It would also decide whether ‘Desh Mein Modi; Delhi Mein Bedi’ is possible. As far as Congress is concern, it is to be seen if the verdict would hit the last nail on its coffin. @BharatkumarRaut

Delhi polls shaping like an ODI THIS refers to your editorial 'Delhi scene: Attack becomes personal' (ADC, Feb. 3). The daily surveys undertaken by a leading national newspaper in Delhi have been consistently indicating that the AAP has an edge over the BJP which is rather strange, considering that the party was indeed given a chance to rule Delhi even though it had only 28 seats last time, 8 short of a simple majority, the deficit having been

made up by the Congress. But, at that time, entering the Parliament in large numbers loomed large before the new political outfit which did not think much of contesting as many as 400 seats, leaving Delhi to its fate. The BJP was in the Opposition in Delhi for fifteen years and so all the party bigwigs have rolled up their sleeves to see that they regain their lost power. The poll scene is shaping like an ODI and so the result will be in suspense until the last ball is bowled. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
IT appears prima facie that Arvind Kejriwal's goose is cooked considering that he has been accused of blatant fiscal discrepancies and illicit liquor has been discovered in the den of one his prominent colleagues. If the accusations hold water he is in deep trouble. Still waters run deep they say. I say this in a sardonic vein. What more can you expect of a man who has cast to political
Arvind Kejriwal wilderness, like flotsam and jetsam his one time mentor, philosopher and guide – Anna Hazare. Little is heard from him (Anna), and if Kejriwal had continued to be under Anna's munificence he (Kejriwal) would not have had to see his name smudged in so demeaning a fashion. However politics is a dirty game and there is every possibility that Kejriwal has been framed. It is ironic that both Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi once were under the same tutelage and ideology and now they are arch enemies shouting themselves hoarse and getting at each others throat which has prob-
ably resulted in both of them having throat problems. One with the trademark muffler and the other without it. I fervently hope that the people of Delhi do not give a 'Pehle AAP' verdict. — Hemant Hemmady, Virar
THE honesty of Kiran Bedi cannot be questioned but politics is a dirty game and I believe she would be a misfit in the murky business of political corridors. She is a straight forward lady with proven capabilities of an IPS officer of top rank in our country but in politics you have to follow the party line which one believes would clash as far as principles and ethos are concerned that would frustrate her in the days to come. Already, two of her closest aides of yesteryear's Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare are unhappy and in the opposite camp which is sad. Bedi could have been utilised by the BJP as an 'Law & Order' minister of cabinet rank like the Congress did of Nandan Nilekani and she would not be successful as CM of Delhi. Kejriwal vs Bedi is getting to be a dirty game with both sides hitting punches below the belt. Both are highly educated apart from good friends in the past and my request to both is not to wash dirty linen in public but win the support of the voters by positive campaigns highlighting their own work rather than pointing the drawbacks of their opponent. Good luck to both, and may the best candidate win and both work tions should be taken. Parents have to advise their children not to undertake such ventures. I HOPE the BJP wins a majority in Delhi elections in spite of self goals. Kiran Bedi's sore throat is a blessing in disguise and the best remedy for her malaise is to keep her mouth shut during road shows. The cartoons released by BJP government are in poor taste and very childish particularly now when so much is being talked about R.K. Laxman's witty but inoffensive cartoons. Asking five questions daily is very foolish on behalf of BJP. What has happened to their think tank? THIS refers to 'BJP slams AAP for 'twisting' advertisement's tone, moves EC' (ADC-February 3, 2015). Kejriwal and his AAP have been trying to make a virtue of the fact that the Party receives donations only by cheques and that the list of donors is constatly updated at the AAP website. Kejriwal had time and again bitterly accused his rivala, the BJP and Congress parties, of not being transparent regarding the donations received by them. But now it has come to light that Kejriwal, the wily ex-IRS officer, had perfected a sly method to get donations through havala dealings, while superficially camouflaging these as legitimate transactions. f you live near the that roads lead up to the Mumbai-Goa highway, you’re likely to be treated to the roaring sound of bikes as they make their way to India Bike Week, which will be held in Goa from February 20 to 21. While you won’t be able to see past their helmets and heavy gear, you should know that several of these bikers are women who have been breaking gender stereotypes about riding for a while now. According to Martin D’Costa, the president of India Bike Week, the two-day festival is expecting almost 12,000 people this year, and will offer film screenings, music performances and bike stunt displays. We spoke to some of the women riders to find out what it’s like.

you will learn witH time Sangeetha Jairam, who started riding when she was just 15-years-old, draws inspiration from her father, who used to ride a bike. She joined India Bike Week in 2011, simply to interact and share her passion for riding with people who have similar interests. As a woman rider, Sangheeta has received mostly positive attention from people when she is on the road. She tells us, “People are almost always helpful. So, the attention is more positive than negative.” Women, especially in our country, are subjected to sexism in almost all aspects of life, so you can’t expect bike riding to be that different. To tackle such situations, Sangheeta believes in maintaining an extremely low profile — she doesn’t believe in advertising herself. After all, it’s important to be safe rather than sorry! If you’re wondering about how different it is to ride as a women, Sangheeta explains, “I don’t think there’s much of a difference. I do face minor issues such as my hair sticking to the helmet or being subjected to occasional, unwarranted attention. But, you learn with time and after a while, these things don’t really bother you.” Sangheeta shares an experience with us, telling us, “I was once riding a big bike with luggage and while taking a U-turn, my bike fell to the ground. Lifting it up wasn’t an easy task. Nobody came to help me, in fact people were a little astounded because I was a woman biker. But, people in rural areas are generally helpful and mean no harm.” Sangheetha drools over the Ducati Multistrada and her favourite biking route in India is the Himalayas. She explains, “The road to the Himalayas is challenging, scenic, and is filled with life lessons. I would love to ride through Tibet — it seems so fascinating!”

Ever since she laid her hands on a bike as a young girl, Labdhi Shah knew that this was a hobby that she wanted to pursue. So, she bought her first bike, a Harley Davidson, in 2010. However, the Kawasaki V800 is also a favourite. She explains that bikeriding is an activity that comes with its fair share of obstructions, especially for women. The safety gear usually weighs at least 7-8kg and for a short woman, that can be quite a heavy load. “It’s better to protect yourself with those 7-8kgs than risk your life without it,” she says. Rash drivers and racers are another inconvenience that she faces on the road, but that doesn’t stop her. She tells us that one of her most memorable biking experiences has been the ride to Udaipur with her biking group, Surat Superbikers Club, which she recommends to any bike-riding enthusiast. Riding to Leh-Ladakh is on her bucket list and while being a female rider comes with its cons, she believes that women also garner a lot of respect while riding. “People are usually awestruck when they see a woman handle a bike just as well as a man!” she laughs. Just like many other bikers, Labdhi has passed through several rural areas on her trips and she can assure you that the people in villages don’t have any sexist misconceptions and perceptions about women who ride bikes. “When you do something that you nothing like it,” she signs off.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2015 Picture credit: Sarika Mehta
it’S like you’re a celeBrity! You and a friend are both riding down an almost-empty highway in the rural hinterlands and suddenly, your friend’s bike breaks down. You have no option but to stop, in order to try and fix the problem. Right then, you notice that a young man has stopped a few feet away from you. He whips out a phone and excitedly mutters something that sounds like, ‘Come here, there are women on bikes here.’ If this sounds scary at first, you know what Firdaus Shaikh’s first reaction was. She is a founding member of the all-girl biker group, Bikerni, and if we were to go by her experiences, the worst that could happen is that the man will ask you to pose for a few pictures. Firdaus, who has been obsessed with biking for a long time, and was part of a boy’s bikers club, before she and a few other female riders decided to start Bikerni, tells us that instead of facing creepy stares and sexist attitudes, she actually comes across awe and wonder. The guy in her story was so awestruck that he called his friends over to share this sense of wonder.
Firadaus, who currently rides a Pulsar as well as a Karizma and hopes to own a Ducati someday, has another tale to regale us with. She says, “When we ride in and park at tea shops, the chaiwalah will initially dismiss us as just another group of guys, because he can’t see through our gear. However, once we take off our helmets and he discovers that we’re actually a group of girls, first he will be a little surprised, and then he will be all over us, offering tea (laughs).” All through our talk with Firadaus, it’s easy to catch her passion for biking and the confidence with which she talks about riding through India, to destinations such as Ladhak (Bikerni holds the 2013 Limca Book for Records for being the largest all-women motorcycle expedition to Khardung-La, which is the highest motor-able road in the world), Malshej Ghat and Goa, is enough to inspire women. Of course, she tells us that as a women, answering nature’s call on a long ride can prove to be a bit of a problem. But, once you get some experience riding, you will figure out how to solve this problem. >> Firdaus is one of the founding members of the all-girl biker group, Bikerni
>> A doctor by profession, Sarika leaves rural residents awe-struck with her hobby as well as profession
38-year-old Sarika Mehta, who is a doctor by profession, loves riding as well as anything that has the word adventure in it. She also loves mountaineering, and took up bike riding as a challenge. Her husband, who is also a biker, is extremely supportive of her hobby and often accompanies her on road trips. But, as a lot of women who love bike riding, she faces some problems while on the road. Fellow bikers constantly want to compete in order to prove their superiority. The weight of the bike can prove to be a disadvantage as well. “I never argue with people who doubt my abilities. Instead, I show them what I am
capable of,” she explains. A member of the allwomen biking group Bikerni, she loves to go on long biking trips, and the route between Surat and Kutch is one of her favourites. “With such a large variety of bikes available, I wouldn’t want to pick a favourite,” she laughs. Thanks to her job, Sarika has been to several rural villages, where she serves as an inspiration for the people because of her bike riding hobby as well as her profession. “I want people to understand that you need to respect the rider, because they are doing something challenging and are passionate about it,” she adds.

>> This picture by Meghna is super adorable! But, like she does, make sure to wear safety gear when you’re actually riding!
Stay Safe!
Here are a few safety tips for women, shared by the organisers of India Bike Week: n Wear helmets and knee guards. n Carry a map and a torch. n Install a safety application on your phone. n Carry pepper spray and a safety knife. n Carry extra batteries and ensure your emergency contacts are on speed dial. n Pre-plan your stops.

Dr. Biker
n Always know your route. n Stay visible — if drivers can see you, they are less likely to hit you. n Do a quick test to check your brakes and wheels. Make sure that “quick release” wheels are properly secured. n Assure bike readiness — Is your bike properly tuned? Is your seat comfortable and well-adjusted?
Like Sangheeta, Meghna Khanna’s bike riding inspiration is her father, who was a fighter pilot at the Indian Air Force. Meghna started riding when she was 12-years-old and is participating in India Bike Week for the first time this year. She tells us, “When I was 12-years-old, I rode a scooter in an air force station in Bareilly. I switched to riding a Yamaha when I turned 13-yearsold; at 14, I tried other bikes and finally at 15, I rode a Bullet. It’s been 20 years since I started riding.” Women generally have low upper body strength and since the Bullet is a heavy bike, Meghna does find it difficult to handle. She explains, “Your feet need to touch the ground to balance the bike. Since I am not tall and ride a Royal Enfield-350cc, I had to get the seat modified for a smoother ride.”Another bike that she loves riding is the Triumph, with its old-world charm. She has enjoyed riding on the road from New Delhi to Ladakh and from Bombay to Goa, and wishes to explore the North East and Rann of Kutch, because of the scenic beauty and excellent roads there. Meghna adds, “The only person I have to prove anything to is myself. I am doing this for myself and not for anybody else.” Over the past 10 years (since building toilets at every petrol pump became compulsory), Meghna thinks that long ride have become easier for women. She adds, “Men can relieve themselves anywhere, but we can’t. So, this rule has made my life easier.” Meghna believes in the beauty of the rural parts of our country and feels welcomed by rural people. An unforgettable experience for Meghna took place a ride between Bangalore and Pondicherry. She explains, “I found a petrol pump run only by women. Who could have thought that in such an unexplored area, there will be women running a petrol pump. Now you can imagine what these rural areas can offer!” Meghna is part of the Women Traveller’s Meet, where different people sit together and share their experiences.
the motographer Regardless of how decent smartphone cameras are, no trip, especially a road-trip, is complete without that one photographer, obsessed with capturing the best shot. The next time you see of a group of women bikers and notice one of the pillions taking pictures with wild abandon, you may have caught a glimpse of professional photographer, Ara Alexander, who combines her love of photography and bikes to create motorcycling photography, or motography. Though she would love to ride a bike, she’s still in the process of learning and one day, hopes to ride to Khardung-la. She tells us, “If you’re a biker, the pinnacle of riding is the route to Khardung-la, the highest motor-able spot in the world. I would love to ride there and shoot.” About the place that she has been to, she says, “I’ve been on very few routes... but my favourite route is Goa. The mesmerising bends and curves on the way have always thrilled me. The scenery and background that I get to capture is the best there.”

MAKEOVER The weather in Mumbai may not get as cold as we would like it to be during winter, but the slight chill gives us an excuse to shop for some adorable winter items to add to our wardrobe. Yamini Walia & Dev Goswami bring you their picks of the best winter accessories
The signature luxury packaging is evident when you catch a glimpse of Bvlgari's new fragrance, Lilaia. From its super feminine name to the obvious peridot reference on its green jewelled cap (also referred to repeatedly in their promotions for the perfume) everything is appealing — but does the scent match up? When you say fruity, I usually run a mile away and the combination of mandarin and orange leaves don't perk my interest. But one spritz of the heady scent and you're sold on its other notes, including the slightly smoked, grassy tobacco-like mate and the Mediterranean mastic plant. It's slightly woody, a little outdoorsy (so the packaging is even more apt) and definitely as regal as its oft-quoted throwback to Orient grandeur. And the best part for me — was that unlike a lot of Bvlgari's lighter scents, this lasts all day! Price On request Where Select retail outlets across the city rating ****

Maxi dresses, denim shirts and funky shoes are definitely in style, but thrown together in this look, they just do not work. We adore Sonakshi’s youthful bob and the denim shirt looks stylish from the waist up. However, the loose fitted dress and sling bag would have benefited from a more open-toed pair of shoes. It’s fun and quirky though, so we’re not giving it a full thumbs down.
We don’t know where to start with this dress. It looks like a plastic sheet, the black belted waist is unnecessary and the terrible nude colour blocking seems like someone stripped the colour off half of the dress — or worse, as though it’s faded from the waist up! Soha ali khan
Soha looks very pretty, perfectly traditional and easygoing in this outfit — even though it is a little too heavily embroidered for such a bold colour. A sleeveless style may have looked a little more stylish, but her accessories and makeup are spot on when it comes to this outfit.

There’s nothing spectacular about this look, but while it does little to impress, it does not offend either. The neckline complements her well-rounded shoulders and we love that she’s kept her toned arms bare. The quirky print on the bodice is impressive, adding a much needed pop of colour to an otherwise dull grey skirt.
Channeling the red carpet style that Hollywood is so in love with at the moment, Urvashi tries to mix both the low-neck metallic dress and playful jumpsuit trend. Unfortunately, the runched waist ruins the sleek look that a metallic jumpsuit should have, making this look a little too shoddy for our tastes. Her makeup is too bold for the look, but her hair is styled well.

Dealing With a flirty colleague One of my co-workers is really flirty — not with me, but with my boyfriend! My boyfriend picks me up at the office, and for the past few days, I’ve been noticing that my colleague has been hanging around, trying to flirt with him. I haven’t spoken to my boyfriend about this because I don’t want to make it into a big deal. However, her behaviour is really annoying, even though I know that I don’t have anything to be worried about. Is there any way I can put an end to this? — nimisha Borana, andheri
Dear nimisha, We think that you should talk to your boyfriend — it won’t be a big deal if
you talk about it in a casual, joking manner. The reason we’re recommending talking to your partner first is because he can actually help you put an end to your colleague’s behaviour. You can ask him to seem completely uninterested and aloof the next time she talks to him — though you may run the risk of hurting your colleague’s feelings. Another way you can deal with this is by asking your boyfriend to wait at a coffee shop, instead of waiting at your office — this won’t give your colleague the opportunity to flirt with him. If push comes to shove, you should have a frank conversation with her about how her behaviour annoys you.

Also, remember that buying a new mattress every time your old one is worn down will cost a sizeable sum of money. Bed covers are more than just an aesthetic home décor item. They protect your mattress from allergens, while providing extra comfort. Remember that bed covers are much easier to maintain and clean than mattresses, so make sure that you use a fitted sheet to cover your mattress, and that you change it frequently.
You need to flip and rotate your mattress every few months. Of the two, rotating is the extremely important as it ensures that the bulk of your body (your head and torso) isn’t concentrated on one spot — which is the reason why mattresses get disfigured and develop lumps. So, make sure that you rotate your mattress regularly, so that the headboard facing side is at your feet. This will ensure even wear-and-tear helping your mattress to last longer.

Rajnath briefs PM over Matang row
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about allegations that Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami had tried to stall the arrest of Congress leader Mantang Sinh in connection with Saradha scam. Singh apprised the Prime Minister on the issue after talking to Goswami and CBI Director Anil Sinha to get a factual picture about allegations that Goswami, a 1977 batch IAS officer from J&K cadre, had interfered in CBI's work and made attempts to prevent arrest of Sinh on Saturday, official sources said.
Over Rs.32L cash, 34,000 liquor bottles seized in Delhi Election Commission-appointed surveillance teams have seized over Rs.32 lakh cash and 34,000 liquor bottles as part of their drive to curb illegal inducements to voters in poll-bound Delhi. As per latest data filed by Election Expenditure observers to the poll panel, over 90 teams, flying squads and static vigil squads have seized a total of Rs 32,20,000 cash, 34,323 number of liquor bottles and 35 fire arms since the Assembly polls were announced here on January 12.
EW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday trashed opinion polls, which gave an edge to AAP in the Delhi assembly polls, saying these were 'lies' and asked Delhiites not to get swayed by such surveys. During his last election rally here, three days ahead of assembly elections, Modi also tried to woo voters by talking about central welfare schemes, reports PTI. Trashing opinion polls which have predicted majority for AAP, he asked people not to get swayed by these "lies" and said during last assembly elections they (AAP) claimed that they will win more than 50 seats but could not even manage the highest tally. "Even when I contested from
PM Narendra Modi Varanasi in Lok Sabha, they (surveys) said Modi will lose by three lakh votes. I don't know who are they (pollsters)," Modi said, adding he was wondering how someone who could not win his own Lok Sabha seat was being projected as someone big, in
an apparent reference to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Attacking AAP on recent allegations of "dubious" donations, Modi said he was asked by his friends whether he has also given donation to AAP and when he got it checked, "I was surprised to know that even Mahatma Gandhi and (US President Barack) Obama have donated to them." "What kind of people are they (AAP)? In public life there should not be any place for such lies," the Prime Minister, who has been holding rallies for three consecutive days in Delhi, targetted AAP without naming it. He also talked about various welfare schemes undertaken by his government to help the poor during the rally in South Delhi's Ambedkar

Nagar and said his politics was all about development without which no state can progress. "My politics have only one style, only one mantra and only one focus and that is development. And it means that there should be change in the lives of the poor people. Their children should get education, their parents should get medicine. And there should be concrete house in place of jhuggis," he said. He referred to 'Jandhan' and direct benefit transfer for gas cylinder subsidy as pro-poor measures taken by his government. In an apparent attack on Congress, he said his was neither a "ghotala sarkar (government of scam)" nor was a government run with the help of "ghotalebaaz (scamsters)".
Modi’s Rs.10L suit was AAP takes out cycle made in UK: Rahul rallies to woo voters N
N
EW DELHI: Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 'Make in India' campaign, Rahul Gandhi yesterday said the Rs.10 lakh suit he wore during US President Barack Obama's visit was "Made in UK". Gandhi also accused Modi of working only for only four-five industrialists. "Modiji said he will give you employment. He talked of 'Make in India'. Crores of rupees were spent in marketing this 'Make in India'. You tell me whether something came out of it. "He wears Rs.10 lakh suit. Newspapers report that this is not 'Make in India'. That too is 'Make in UK'. And then he tells you about 'Make in India' and employment. Did any youth get employment? No. He told you that Delhi is dirty and clean it. He did not give you job, did not lessen your suffering but put a broom in your hand," Gandhi said at a rally here. As the election campaign for Delhi reached a crescendo, the Congress Vice President targeted both the Prime Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, accusing them of "selling big dreams" and not fulfill-
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi ing promises. He also rained promises like right to roof for every Delhite, ending contract labour within a week and making electricity cheap. This the second time during the election campaign, Gandhi had taken a jibe at Modi’s clothing. Last week, he had said that though Modi failed to deliver on the promise of bringing back black money, he wore a suit worth Rs 10 lakh during Obama’s visit. Gandhi, whose party has been accusing Modi of centralising all powers, said that the entire country is being run through the PMO and he (Modi) thinks that he alone can change India.
EW DELHI: In a novel method to reach out to the young voters, AAP volunteers are taking out cycle rallies all over the city carrying placards and banners showcasing the party's specific promises to the youth. As the name suggests, the 'Cyclecum-Cycle rickshaw campaign', involves the use of cycles hired from BRT stands and also rickshaws plying around the city. "The placards carry party promises such as drugs free Delhi, free wifi, incubation centres for young entrepreneurs, education loans and setting up of 20 new colleges," said Vansh Saluja, an AAP volunteer. The cycle rent comes to around Rs.10 for every three hours. However, when hired in bulk, the volunteers get some discount and pay around Rs.150-200. A brainchild of the youth and the womens' wing of the party, the campaign has received good response in various constituencies of Delhi like Kasturba Nagar, New Delhi, R.K. Puram, Kalkaji etc. The rallies require permission from the Election Commission
AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal with party leader Ashutosh. which has to be obtained at least 48 hours beforehand. "Before the elections were announced, these were easy to conduct but now we need permission from the Election Commission for such rallies and campaign," added Vansh. The cycle rickshaws, on the other hand, have volunteers sitting with placards announcing the policies. While some rickshaw drivers offer voluntary services, others charge a nominal amount, he said. The AAP plans to hold more such rallies in the last leg of the campaigning so as to spread their message through such innovative ideas. Pics: PTI

Unbreakable high value fixed deposits will soon earn higher rate of interest with the Reserve Bank of India allowing banks to offer differential rates. The Reserve Bank has, however, not specified the minimum tenure of FDs which will be eligible for higher rate of interest. RBI said that the detailed guidelines on differential rate of interest will be issued soon. "Definitely, banks would offer higher rate of interest as they would get bulk deposit of fixed tenure which will help them in better management of asset liability position," a senior banker said.

RBI Guv Bats For Increasing INDIA IS GENERATING BILLIONAIRES Limits For Tax Benefit In Savings NEWS FLASH

“The government increased the limits for tax benefit in savings by Rs 50,000 in the last budget. The question is: Is there room for more, primarily because the real tax benefit has fallen over time because the limit was at Rs 1 lakh for a long time? May be what we have to do is increase that”, says RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan By A Business Reporter
“G
iven that there was in some quarters, a public perception that the RBI was tardy, we wanted to say that we understood the need for action as and when we had information and we were prepared to act even out-
side policy dates. And it was useful to signal that," RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan who held the key rates at the scheduled policy announcement on Tuesday, said during a conference call with analysts, yesterday. After signalling at that meet that the RBI will be keenly watching progress on fiscal consolidation, Rajan gave more details on RBI's expectations from the upcoming budget, saying it is the quality of the measures which is important. "A movement of spending from mistargeted or poorly targeted subsidies towards more capital investment would be a good move," he said, adding that such a thing will also be good from the inflation management perspective, as supply side will benefit out of capital spending, reports PTI. For increasing the saving rate, which has dipped to 30%, Rajan also advocated for increasing the tax benefit for small investments in financial instruments like PPF, PF, insurance policies etc under Sec 80C. "Remember the government increased the limits for tax benefit in savings by Rs 50,000 in the last
budget. The question is: is there room for more, primarily because the real tax benefit has fallen over time because the limit was at Rs 1 lakh for a long time? May be what we have to do is increase that," Rajan said. On growth, Rajan clarified that the change in computation will not result in a change in the way RBI looks at the economy and reiterated that it is awaiting the release of the new numbers on February 9. "We may be reaching the outskirts of the woods, but we are not out of the woods yet. I do not think any data that suggests that we are out of the woods, we would put too much weight on it," he said. On real interest rate target of 1.52%, Rajan said the positive thing from a savings perspective is that we are in the positive territory from an inflation management perspective, but stuck to the target spelt out earlier. There would be case to expand the target beyond 2% once we are in a period of sustained high growth, but given that we are only emerging out from problems, the 1.5% to 2% band is a fair one, he said.

Match Begins

The latest mega-star entrant in the Indian television arena recently unveiled its flagship non-fiction show, ‘India Poochega – Sabse Shaana Kaun?’ that marks the return of Shah Rukh Khan on the small screen. SRK will host this unique international game show that promotes 'shaanpatti over gyaanpatti'. Below are excerpts of a tetea-tete with the Badshah of Bollywood.
Why did you choose to return on television with this particular show? I like the Q&A format in a show. I enjoy quizzing and at home too, I often play similar games with my children - Aryan and Suhana. The opportunity of doing the same on such a platform was very interesting for me. This whole move of having contemporary and traditional seeped in values is the kind of concept the show is based on, I think this is the need of the hour in terms of what TV content should be. This move will bring in new programming that is more edgy, more fun and vibrant.
How confident are you about your comeback with India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun? You need a synergy between films and TV to make something entertaining. It is ironic that I started my career with TV but have not been able to give something back. I tried doing something creative on Indian TV in the past but failed. But for this show I want to work round the clock, it’s special. The format of this show has never been seen on television. The participants will not be quizzed by anyone in the studio, but by the aam janata on the streets. According to you, what does 'Sabse shaana kaun' mean? Being shaana does not mean bullying someone. To be shaana you have to be street-smart. Shaana people are those “Joh shaan se jeete hai aur shaan se maante hai ki unko sab kuch patah hai!” In this show, both the ‘asker’ as well as the ‘contestant’ need to display “shaanpati.” When you have a fight at home who is the ‘shaana’ one? Currently, we are all centered around my son AbRam. He is the most shaana! What are your views on the Indian
television space today? The small screen is no longer considered 'small'. It has taken a huge leap. Someday, I hope to start my own television channel, Inshallah! I would like to bring a TV show that caters to loyal audiences of television. Most Indian households are single TV households and it is difficult to find a foreign show that can be Indianized for family viewing.

aving made a documentary and a TV serial on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, veteran actor Biswajit Chatterjee will now direct a film based on the life of the freedom fighter. Biswajit, 78, said through this film, people will finally get to know many aspects about Bose, his life and his contribution towards the country, which have not been depicted properly in earlier movies. "We have done complete research and we will mainly focus during the period from 1942 to 1945. We have got a lot of support from his party All India Forward Bloc. It is time to make a film on Netaji which shows him in the right light. So far whatever films have been made on him have not done justice to him. They have not shown the real side. He has made immense contribution to our country," Biswajit said. The actor has previously made a documentary 'Amar Netaji' and Bengali TV serial 'Netaji Subhash'. The film directed by Biswajit and
Pretty Little Liars. I try to make them see some of the shows I watch which are serious, but don’t really succeed
You will be seen with Mahira Khan soon in Raees. What do you think What TV shows do you watch with of Mahira? your children? I met her only for two minutes. She was With my son Aryan, I watch Breaking Bad shooting for something and I went to say and Fargo. With my daughter Suhana it’s hello. I’ve seen some of her work and I think Will we see you in any fiction Glee, America’s Next Supermodel and she’s a wonderful actor.
People will know real side of Netaji through my film: Biswajit Big Magic’s 'Har Mushkil ka Hal-Akbar Birbal' is raising the entertainment levels by introducing an interesting storyline to keep the viewers entertained. Dynamic bodybuilder turned actor Ketan Karande is all set to challenge the witty Birbal in a wrestling match on the show. Known for his powerful performance in periodics raising drama’s, the actor returns with yet another fascinating character to enthrall audiences this week on Thursday – Friday, February 5 and 6 at 9 pm on Big Magic. As per the track, Prince Suraj Bhan, the emperor of a neighboring kingdom visits the palace for a few days. Suraj Bhan’s father was defeated by Birbal in war few years back which had left a bitter taste for the minister in the Prince’s heart. Hilarity ensues when Suraj Bhan falls for Urvashi and expresses his desire to marry her. As the prince is too proud of his strength, he challenges every man in the Mughal Empire to fight for Urvashi by defeating him.
TV show? I enjoy thrillers! Back in the day I used to watch shows like Tehkikaat and Karamchand. If something similar comes my way, then why not?
Biswajit Chatterjee written by Alok Krishna Chakravarty, will be made in Hindi, English and Bengali. Besides Bose other historical personalities to feature in the movie will be Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Winston Churchill, Jawaharlal Nehru, Swami Vivekananda among others. "The cast will have both Indian and foreign actors. The film is now in scripting stage. It will take another month's time. Then we will decide about the cast," Biswajit said.

INDIA NEED BOWLING HEROES TO RETAIN WORLD CUP: HARBHAJAN SPORTS

has the experience of playing three World Cup including two finals. "It's always not possible for all four to perform on a given day but at the most, we must have three of the four specialist bowlers performing in every match. At the most, we can have one bowler on a given day who might not click but you can't afford to have two bowlers leaking runs from both side. Then it can create pressure on other bowlers also," he further explained. Harbhajan is of the opinion that India's spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel will find it advantageous to bowl with white kookaburra on hard Australian pitches. "There is a difference between a ball which is 45 overs old and one which is 25 overs old. In Australia, the white kookaburras used from either side will be barely 10-12 overs old when the spinners come into operation (in case they are not called in Powerplay overs). The seam would still be intact which would help the spinners grip it better and get more purchase out of the tracks," said the veteran of 101 Tests, 229 ODIs and 25

EW DELHI: India's batting line-up led by Virat Kohli can chase any total on a given day but bowlers need to "stand up and be counted" in order to retain the cricket World Cup, feels ace spinner Harbhajan Singh. "India possess a fabulous batting line-up with Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane forming the core but we would need the likes of Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami to perform like Zaheer Khan, in order to retain the World Cup," Harbhajan, a key member of the victorious 2011 World Cup squad, told PTI in an exclusive interview. Harbhajan then did an elaborate analysis on what can be expected of Indian bowlers at the World Cup. "I think we would be playing with four specialist bowlers and may be an allrounder (Stuart Binny). With the field restrictions and two new balls, I believe we need at least three bowlers to perform on any given day out of four," stated Harbhajan, who
T20 Internationals. India's performance in the tri-nation tournament may have come for flak but Harbhajan is not ready to read too much into that performance. "I don't think performance in tri-series will be parameter as India are strong contenders to get into semi-final along with Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Don't forget we had injury issues and everybody wasn't 100 percent fit. With the break, I believe everyone would come into the World Cup fresh and raring to go," reminded Harbhajan. The 'Turbanator' was effusive in his praise for India's batting mainstay Kohli, who he feels doesn't buckle down under pressure. "Virat thrives in pressure situation. The more the pressure on Virat, better he plays. There aren't too many batsmen in world cricket today, who love chasing and burden of trying to overtake a big score. Virat is one guy, who would always back himself to chase any total. "Also the pressure of expectations, that's there for everybody. It's not that only Virat will be under pressure but it's same for Dhoni.”
Injured Clarke gets Lehmann’s support for World Cup M
We mean business, says David Warner
M
ELBOURNE: Swashbuckling opener David Warner is bullish about Australian's chances of lifting a record fifth World Cup on home soil and said the recentlyconcluded tri-series win will send a great message to other competing teams at the quadrennial event. Australia didn't loss a match in the tri-series, which culminated with a win against England in the Final last Sunday. Warne said they had taken advice from 1992 World Cup veterans Geoff Marsh and Craig McDermott about the expectations of playing on home soil.Warner also said there were no pressure on them and Aussies were the favourites.
ELBOURNE: Putting his weight behind injured Michael Clarke, Australia coach Darren Lehmann has said the 33-year-old batsman's recovery from a hamstring surgery is "ahead of schedule" and he will captain the national team in the upcoming cricket World Cup. Lehmann ended weeks of speculation over Clarke's participation in the ICC's showpiece event, which begins on February 14. "Definitely," was Lehmann's reaction when asked if Clarke would be fit in time to lead Australia in the World Cup. "He's (Clarke) ahead of schedule," he added. Clarke has time till Aus-
side really well through the World Cup and win the World Cup," Lehmann said. Clarke is set to play for Cricket Australia XI against Bangladesh in a One-Day practice match at Allan Border Field, although he would only bat and do light fielding. Clarke was ruled out after the first cricket Test against India in December with an serious hamstring injury, and in his place Steven Smith had filled in as the Australia captain. Meanwhile, Lehmann has issued a warning to out-ofform Australia vice-captain tralia's second pool match of Lehmann hoped that Clarke George Bailey, saying he the World Cup against would make a comeback needs to score runs to assure Bangladesh on February 21 to much earlier. his place in the final XI during prove his fitness. Corruption-free World Cup is the greatest challenge: ICC D
UBAI: International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive, David Richardson feels organising a safe and corruption-free World Cup will be their greatest challenge during the twomonth long mega-event. The ICC World Cup will kick start with hosts Australia and co-hosts New Zealand taking on England and Sri Lanka respectively on Febru-
ary 14 in Melbourne and Richardson said security has been the biggest expense for the ICC this time. "Security ... I suppose it is reflective of the global situation we are in. That has been a big challenge for us. The spend on security in this World Cup is more than ever before," he said yesterday. "Previously, the cost of travel and accommodation
would exceed the security projects, but now it is the other way round. It is the biggest expense for the World Cup, apart from the prize money."It has been a challenge, but I think we are very well placed so there is not necessarily a threat to the tournament itself, but obviously we have to be aware of the global situation," Richardson said.
"The other factor of course is match-fixing and spot-fixing. Any incident along those lines will be a disaster for the event. However, I think the level of preparedness for this event is again the best we have ever been," he added. The former South African wicketkeeper exuded confidence that the World Cup will be corruption free considering the level of effort that the ACU have put in.

Pressure will be on India in opener against Pakistan: Raju N
By Faisal Kamal
EW DELHI: India may have never lost to Pakistan in a World Cup but former spinner Venkatapathi Raju feels that being the defending champions the pressure will be on the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team when it faces off against the arch-rivals in their opening game in Adelaide. "India have done better in the recent past as compared to Pakistan but being the defending champions and the fact that they have not lost a game against their archrivals in the ICC World Cup, I believe the pressure will be on us. Pakistan have nothing to lose, we have everything to gain," Raju, who is a development officer in the Asian Cricket Council, told PTI in an interview. Raju, who was part of the 1992 Indian side when Australia and New Zealand hosted the first coloured World Cup, said that the Men in Blue should kickstart their defence on a winning note on February 15. "People are so used to seeing India win against Pakistan in a World Cup that the pressure automatically builds on us. But if you have to be a champion team then you have to come good in any situation and start on a winning note to take the momentum forward," he said. Raju wants India to feature in the top-6 but predicts that sub-continent teams will have a tough time due to new ICC rules like field restrictions and power-plays - a definite new from the time Raju played cricket. "There is a lot of difference between 1992 and now. Because at that time there were no boundary ropes, the restrictions were only four in the circle.”

M
UMBAI: Former India skipper and exchief selector Dilip Vengsarkar here expressed concerns about the declining standard of cricket in Mumbai, considered as the nursery of the country's players, and said that advanced coaching is the need of the hour. "What is required in Mumbai is advanced coaching. IPL has started the mushroom growth of coaches. I don't know whether they give the right kind of inputs to the young cricketers," said Vengsarkar here last night during the launch of a new initiative – Excellence in Cricket (EIC) – of which he is the brand ambassador. "Mumbai cricket has fallen a great deal over the last 2-4 years. Under Ajit Wadekar, Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy for 16 straight years. I hope those days come back. We have to revive it. This is where advanced coaching by the centre will help. There are a lot of former cricketers like Bishen Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna who are very good coaches. I am sure they will impart real set of knowledge to young cricketers," said the 116-Test veteran. He also advocated the re-
Union Bank overcome state cops M
UMBAI: Union Bank of India came up with a late flourish scoring three goals in the final moments of the match to snatch a 3-1 win against a dogged Maharashtra State Police (MSP) in an Elite Division match of the Mumbai District Football Association League played at the Cooperage ground on Thursday. The policemen grabbed the initiative by taking the lead through a snap effort by Himket Dembre in the 38th minute and went into the break with a slender 1-0 advantage. However, Union Bank came back fighting and scored the equaliser through veteran Khalid Siddique in the 76th minute and four minutes later Pratik Koli netted the second to give them the lead. Results: Elite Div: Union Bank of India 3 (Khalid Siddique 76, Pratik Koli 80th, Manish Koli 90+4th) beat Maharashtra State Police 1 (Himket Dembre 38th).

vival of the corporate league in Mumbai to help cricketers get jobs and give better mileage to the corporate firms. EIC has been set up to promote International Corporate Cricket League, Centre of Excellence and cricket academies guided by reputed coaches, it was announced at the launch function. "The cricket academies will
be set up at Mumbai (Payyade Sports Club in the western suburb of Borivli) and PYC Gymkhana in Pune. The phase 1 will start in JuneJuly," it was announced at the outset. Apart from the two former spin greats Bedi and Prasanna, the other former cricketers who would be coaches at EIC are: Balwinder Sandhu, Sanjay Bangar,
Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Raghuram Bhatt, Shishir Hattangadi, Amol Muzumdar, Murali Karthik, Abey Kuruvilla, Paras Mhambrey, Zubin Bharucha, Dodda Ganesh, David Johnson, Salil Ankola and S Sridharan. Current cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Robin Uthappa will have one-toone talks with the trainees.
UMBAI: Hosts and 40-time champions Mumbai have included two left-arm spinners, besides off-spinner Akshay Girap, for their must-win concluding Ranji Trophy cricket Group A league fixture against holders Karnataka here. The Mumbai selection panel, led by national chief selector Sandeep Patil, has added under-performing Iqbal Abdullah to the squad in addition to recalled Harmeet Singh, who played his first game of the season in their previous tie against Baroda, to take on the formidable Karnataka at the Wankhede Stadium
from February 6-9. Mumbai have to win the game outright and gain at least six points and edge out other contenders for a spot in the top three of the group and a place in the quarter-finals of the national cricket championship. Squad: Aditya Tare (Captain), Abhishek Nayar, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Sufiyan Shaikh, Shardul Thakur, Nikhil Patil, Akhil Herwadkar, Shrideep Mangela, Badre Alam, Iqbal Abdullah, Akshay Girap, Harmeet Singh and Balwinder Singh Sandhu. State Police, Dena Bank win all-India kabaddi tourney M
UMBAI: Maharashtra State Police powered by Kolkata’s Pro Kabaddi stars Mahendra Rajput and Bajirao Hodage won the title in the men’s section of the Abhinav Super Challenge All-India Kabaddi Tournament in Goregaon. They made light work of their counterparts Mumbai Police who had shocked Indo –Tibetan Border Police in the semis with a 20-9 score line. The biggest surprise was Dena Bank claiming the women’s title by beating two big outfits. In a grudge match in the penultimate round, they brushed aside Western Railway who had beaten them just last The Dena Bank women’s team after winning the Abhinav Super Challenge week in the finals at Vile Parle All-India Kabaddi Tournament on Wednesday.
and followed it up with a calculated win at 11-7 over Central Railway who failed to put up a fight. The state cops were off to a positive start with the man of the tournament Mahendra Rajput claiming two victims in only his second raid after having opened his and the team's account with a bonus point. The city boys who regularly practice with the state side were a bit cautious and did not yield much ground in the first half. As the game warmed up Mahendra and fellow raider Sultan Dange started making deep inroads into rival territory. They kept the scoreboard
ticking. The former showed splendid technique. His side and round house kicks plus his ability to jump over the rivals’ defensive chain were a treat for the eyes. Sultan used his strength to bulldoze whenever he faced frontal blocks from the city defence. He once simply managed to stave off a four man assault. Once the winners scored a lona to lead 168 the outcome became clear. Vaibhav Kadam stood out with good catching for M S Police. Dena Bank had come out with a clear strategy. Their tall raiders especially Apeksha Taakle relied on their reach to score bonus points.
Dabang Mumbai bank on home advantage against Delhi M
Dabang Mumbai during a practice session on the eve of their crucial game against Delhi Wave riders.
UMBAI: Winless Dabang Mumbai are hoping the home advantage in their next three games, starting with today's match here against holders Delhi Waveriders, would help turn things around and put them back on track to clinch a place in the much sought after semi-finals of the Hockey India League (HIL). "We have had a couple of good halves but haven't finished off games. Wins in the next two games will see us
back in the top four. It's a close competition. We are a new team and the more time we spend together as a team, the better. A win will give us the momentum," said star player Glenn Turner ahead of the return leg match against Delhi who beat them 3-1 in the first stage encounter. "Home games are a big advantage and it's great to be back in Mumbai. We need to do well here and get some momentum going. I will be very disappointed if we don't
put pressure on Delhi tomorrow," said the Australian. Mumbai have garnered six points from four games so far, after having started off in a very promising note against last year's runners-up Jaypee Punjab Warriors who were held to an exciting 3-3 draw. Mumbai then lost to Ranchi Rays 1-2 on the next day and then drew with the Ranchi team 2-2 on the return away leg game before losing 1-3 to Delhi in their last encounter.

H I RU VA N A N T H A P U RAM: The seasoned duo of Saurav Ghosal and Joshana Chinappa expectedly walked away with the individual gold medals in squash even as Haryana's wrestlers demolished their rivals to sign off with a whopping 18 gold on the fourth day of competitions in the 35th National Games. In fact, Haryana overtook two-time defending champions Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) at the top of the medals table riding on the
gold rush triggered by their wrestlers, who ended their Games campaign with 18 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, taking the state's overall count to 33 (21 gold, 8 silver, 4 bronze). The SSCB, aiming for a hattrick of overall championship wins, were no pushovers either and have so far accumulated 21 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze medals to total 35. Maharashtra took the third spot with 11 gold, 18 silver, 15 bronze medals for an overall total of 43. If Haryana dominated wrestling, Services were

Services dominated the 10m rifle event as well with Chain Singh Manhas, who won the 50m rifle prone gold yesterday, added a second yellow metal to his kitty by finishing on top again today. Manhas scooped the gold by a whisker totalling 205.9 against Uttar Pradesh's Akhil Sheoran, who shot a score of 205.8. Another Uttar Pradesh shooter -- Sathyam Chauhan -- was a distant third after scoring 183.5. However, Haryana pipped them in the team competition with the trio of Sanjeev Rajput, Prasanth and Deepak Kumar clinching the gold ahead of Manhas, Ravi Kumar and Ashok Chavan. On the wrestling mat, Haryana's dominant show continued and the state notched up five gold medals today. Rajendra Kumar claimed the men's 59kg Greco-Roman gold after beating Delhi's Ravinder. The bronze-medallists in this event were Maharashtra's Vikram Krushant and Chhattisgarh's Nitin. Another gold for Haryana came from Amit Dhankar.

"The balance may have shifted a little bit too much because sometimes poor shots or mis-hits are going for six," Richardson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. tion was clear better. This was second straight draw for the Indian ace in as many games after splitting the point with world number two Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the opener. Meanwhile World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway showed no mercy and defeated Michael Adams of England in his legendary torturous way. The Norwegian shot in to sole lead on
1.5 points following the victory as the other two games in the eight-player roundrobin tournament also ended in draws. Levon Aronian could do little against lowest ranked David Baramidze of Germany and had to sign peace while Fabiano Caruana achieved the same result against Etienne Bacrot of France. With six rounds still to
come, Carlsen is now followed by Anand, Caruana, Aronian, Baramidze and Naiditsch on one point each while Adams finds himself at the bottom of the tables on just a half point from his two games. Anand faced the Tarrasch defense in his white game in the tournament. The opening has been going through a renaissance lately.
