s per statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, 79 per cent of the foreign tourists who visited the state of Maharashtra, visited Mumbai in 2011. Mumbai continues to remain a popular tourist destination due to its vibrant life and depiction of modern India. The clubs, beaches and gastronomy gives any tourist a memorable experience. However, many youngsters, working population, activists and famous personalities who spoke to ADC expressed that Mumbai could actually improve their position at the global level by showing more leniency on the stringent nightlife policy, which states that all restaurants, hotels and malls should close

Yogesh Pratap Singh, an advocate and former officer in the police force added that officially permitting restaurants and bars to remain open late at night would also help to reduce corruption in the police force as many officers are known to take bribes. Expressing concern for those working in the IT sector and call centres who have to work as per timings of foreign countries, advocate Naveen Chomal said, “It will help many businesses such as hoPeople welcome the idea of a 24x7 nightlife as quite a few work long hours. tels, departmental stores and pharmacies as well. He further added, “My complaint was forwarded to Law Officer to know the legal opinion in the case and now, an FIR has been registered against the NGO for this act.” Krishnan has written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, Chief Secretary Dr. Swadhin Kashtriya and Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria - seeking a through investigation into the issue. “I have specifically sought action against AILWSS all-India president Jeevit Ram and its West Bengal unit chief Manish Choudhary, who are engaged in the money-spinning racket. They demand sums and then the I-cards are issued with designations like 'chief vigilance officer', 'chief enquiry officer', 'chief investigation officer', 'CID officer', 'president of action committee' and 'force commander of Ajamgadh'. People who obtain such cards, in turn extort money,” Krishnan said.
“It could be implemented in places which already have ample security such as malls and non-residential complexes such as BandraKurla Complex ,” said Shaina. Apart from those working in call centres or jobs with erratic timings, a 24x7 nightlife plan would also help many hotels flourish in the city and help them cater to a larger population. “We have been trying to get this policy approved since years. For us, it is more of a nightlife economy. Mumbai has definitely lost its charm. People prefer to go to Goa due to the relaxed rules. We are open to suggestions and recommendations from the government. Even if there is additional licensing required or only an extension of the time limit from 1:30 am, we will still welcome it,” said Adarsh Shetty, President of AHAR (Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association). The court has ordered the state government to conduct a study on the impact of safety of women due to this policy. “For a healthy nightlife, we need a mature society as well. I'm doubtful whether the administration or police is geared for this. Women are not safe these days in the police station itself. Proper administration and a political will is required. Only after we achieve that, a healthy nightlife can be implemented,” said Susieben Shah, former chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women.
State plans to start ‘housing fund’ I
n a bid to make homes more affordable for people in Maharashtra, the state government is planning to start a 'housing fund' in which one can contribute a fixed amount of monthly earning for a certain period. In its yet to be released housing policy, the state housing department has proposed a housing fund, where a selfemployed person or a government or private employee desirous of becoming a member, can contribute a fixed percentage of his/her salary in this fund, which will be managed by a fund manager chosen through competitive bidding, reports PTI. "In case the qualifying person is employed in the private or government sector, then in such a case the employee will have the option to make a matching contribution from his/her Provident Fund (PF) account upto 50 per cent," the recommended policy states. "For example, if an employee contributes Rs.1,000 to the Housing Fund and his/her contribution to the PF is normally Rs.2,000 then he/she can reduce the PF Contribution to Rs.1,000
and contribute the balance amount of Rs.1,000 to the Housing Fund," it further states. An official from the housing department said the membership count of the housing fund will indicate the number of people in need of housing and added that the contributions shall be invested in RBI specified government securities. "After a period of 10 years of contribution, the employee can apply for a house in a government scheme and the balance in this fund to his credit shall be his share of the cost towards the house and the balance amount can be borrowed," the policy states. The official said this will encourage people to save for a house and to some extent housing finance will get a boost. The housing fund also proposes to offer interest equivalent to a PF account and the state government will approach the Centre to make contributions to it tax-free. According to the policy, the members of this fund will have priority in eligibility in Maharashtra Housing And Area Development Authority (MHADA) draw for sale of flats.

‘Puppy room’ helps relax stressed students! IN a bid to beat exam stress, students at a UK university are being offered a novel way to relax -- for a small donation of 1.50 pounds they can cuddle a puppy in a dedicated 'dog room'. With exam season looming, those long days spent in the library or slaving over a computer will be starting to take their toll. But for students at the University of Central Lancashire, there's a glimmer of hope. The university's student union is setting up its first ever "puppy room" from this week. It is teaming up with the charity Guide Dogs to try to help students de-stress by cuddling and playing with the animals. It is aimed at raising money for the charity, with students asked for a 1.50 pounds donation to take part. On their Facebook page, organisers say they want to reassure students, the
welfare of the puppies and safety of students are the "top priorities within this project". The puppies will have regular breaks throughout the three hours and be with their handlers at all times. A separate "chill out" room has also been set up for the puppies and the the number of students allowed into the room will be limited.
Battery to power households
A US-based electric carmaker has unveiled a USD 3,000 battery that can power households and even be used to store solar energy. The advance could help change the entire energy infrastructure of the world. The rechargeable lithiumion battery unit would be built using the same batteries Tesla produces for its electric vehicles. The system is called
Powerwall and is designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power and self-consumption of solar power generation. Tesla will sell the 7kWh unit for USD 3,000, while the 10kWh unit will retail for USD 3,500 to installers. When paired with solar power, the 7kWh Powerwall can be used in daily cycling to extend the environmental and cost benefits of solar into the night when sunlight is unavailable. For the first time, running your home on a battery will be affordable and easy. In the near future, having a battery in your home will be as normal as having a water heater or a dishwasher. This just takes us one step closer to being able to power homes completely without the use of fossil fuels.
Wearing a suit can change the way your brain works
WEARING formals to work can elicit feelings of power, which may change some
mental processes, a new study suggests. Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world. Wearing clothing that's more formal than usual encourages people to use abstract processing more readily than concrete
processing. In other words, it makes people think more broadly and holistically, rather than narrowly and about finegrained details. When study subjects who wore formal clothes took cognitive tests, they demonstrated more abstract processing than the group

that sported casual wear. The findings demonstrate that the nature of an everyday and ecologically valid experience, the clothing worn, influences cognition broadly, impacting the processing style that changes how objects, people, and events are construed.

Govt mulls development of IBFC inThane-Belapur belt Allowing existing lease holders in TTC MIDC to develop land for Information Technology (IT) parks and centre for financial services By Prashant Hamine
T
he state government is considering the proposal to develop the Thane-Belapur industrial estate of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) into another International Business & Finance Center (IBFC) within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The area beyond the Thane creek in Belapur is known as the Trans Thane Creek (TTC). The industrial estate was first set up 52 years ago but failed to take off as housing stock then was not easily available in the area. In a renewed bid to revive the industrial estate in the TTC area, the Housing ministry and the Industries ministry have recommended allowing existing lease holders in TTC MIDC to develop land for Information Technology (IT) parks and centre
Subhash Desai and Ravindra Waikar for financial services. Both the ministries have recommended allowing the land lease holders to develop 50 per cent of such built up area for residential purposes and affordable housing. It may be recalled that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had stated that the IBFC should be developed at the BandraKurla Complex (BKC). Both the ministries have now argued that while maintaining the status of Mumbai as the main IBFC and apart from developing another one at BKC, another one can be developed in the TTC MIDC
area. Recently, Shiv Sena Minister of State for Housing Ravindra Waikar and Minister for Industries Subhash Desai had held the meeting of officials from both the ministries. Among the proposals discussed included allowing residential housing stock to be developed in now defunct industrial units in the MIDC. Sources disclosed that when the MIDC was developed and industrial units were allowed to develop IT Parks and financial service centres, the issue of housing was not addressed then. Because of this lacunae in the policy many IT Parks were moderately functional and were not that successful. The proposed policy has recommended allowing 4 Floor Space Index (FSI) for TTC financial centre and charge premium at 60 per cent of the Ready Reckoner Rate for additional FSI used for affordable housing.

It has further stated that practices such as ivory carving, bear dancing, snake charming and use of animals for black magic are totally in opposition to scientific temper and ideals of progressive society. Citing example of Nag Panchami, BNHS argued that in the past, in villages, the farming communities worshiped the abode of cobras in the vicinity of their fields. The rituals did not involve catching the Cobras, but merely showed gratitude to snakes for the important role they played in controlling the rodents and pests in the agricultural fields. NCP chief Sharad Pawar makes shocking statement when Sena has reiterated its stand against a separate Vidarbha state in its party mouthpiece
By A Special Correspondent
I
s Maharashtra heading for a midterm poll? If the NCP chief Sharad Pawar is to be believed then the answer is yes. Pawar yesterday predicted that Shiv Sena and BJP the ruling alliance partners are likely to part ways before the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Pawar while interacting with journalists yesterday made a prediction that the Sena-BJP alliance which is ruling the state will break before the 2017 Mumbai civic polls. To consolidate his point further, Pawar said, “I have been told this by someone in the government itself”. The NCP chief's comments came on a day when the Sena has reiterated its stand against the separate Vidarbha state in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, asking the BJP gov-

oted investor Parag Parikh, founder of mutual fund house PPFAS, died in a car accident in Omaha in the US on Sunday. Parikh's office in Mumbai confirmed his demise, who was in the US to attend the annual meeting of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Corpn. "Parikh had a very good understanding of the market and he was a seasoned value investor. He was very much committed and talking to him was very good learning experience for me," Union KBC Mutual fund Chief Executive G Pradeepkumar told PTI.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar ernment to act against supporters of this demand. Ironically, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is one of the supporters of separate Vidarbha. In the 288 member Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP has 122 MLAs while the Sena has 63. The BJP is short of 22 MLAs for a majority. If the 63 MLAs from the Sena withdraw their support then there would be a midterm poll or the NCP will have to support the government from outside. The NCP interestingly had offered to support the BJP in forming the government immediately after the Assembly polls last year.

The comment by Pawar on the fate of the BJP-Shiv Sena tie up has virtually created a flutter in the political circle of the state. Pawar's talk of the Sena-BJP alliance splitting before the Mumbai civic elections is not without any basis. The BJP is in a mood to cut the Shiv Sena down to size in the BMC and the party has already started working on this particular aspect. The Sena has been ruling the Mumbai civic body for more than a decade now and the BJP wants to have a hand in the pie. The cash rich BMC is so important for the Sena's survival that party leaders are saying that they are ready to let go of power in the state in order to keep its hold over the BMC.

he 23-year-old son of Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Dilip Shirke who shot himself after shooting his colleague and Vakola Senior Police Inspector Vilas Joshi inside the police station alleged that, regular and incessant harassment for the last six months by Assistant Police Inspector (API) Deepak Shinde led to his father taking the drastic step. API Deepak Shinde is responsible for his father and SPI Vilas Joshi's death, because he was always relaying erroneous information to SPI Vilas Joshi, about his father ASI Shirke. On many occasions Shinde made various entries into the station diary on rather trivial issues against his father and on some occasions for absence from duty. The moot question is why did only Deepak Shinde make various diary entries against Shirke, even though there were other officers too working in the same police station, but who never ever made diary observations about Shirke. The son, Abhishkek also said that Shinde often made false allegations against his father which his father used to relate to the family members after reach-

statue in the premises of a church in Bhandup was damaged when a youth allegedly hurled a stone at it, police said on Monday. The accused identified as Paulraj Yauvan Nadar (21) was arrested after the incident occurred at Anthony Church on Sunday night, Vinay Rathod, DCP (Zone VI), told PTI. He said Paulraj's brother Dinakaran was also involved
in the incident and police are looking for him. After the incident, a crowd started gathering at the spot, but police intervened in time and defused the situation. Police suspect that Paulraj was in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident. "We are trying to find out the motive, but it appears that Paulraj was drunk at the time of the incident," an investigating officer said.
Paulraj will be produced before court and police will seek his custody. "Our team nabbed the accused last night only, but we registered the case against him in morning after a complaint was lodged by one P Selvraj," said Bhandup police station senior inspector P R Chavan. A case has been registered under various sections of the IPC for trying to hurt religious sentiments of a community.

If the government wants the people to be more alert then they can provide emergency contact numbers in the black and yellow taxis, but not GPS.” However, women commuters have a different view and prefer the installation of GPS in taxis. Ankita Sharma (20), student of K J Somaiya college says, “GPS installed in taxis is a very good initiative by the transport commissioner as it will make commuters feel safe. Taking cabs alone at night feel a bit scary and with GPS installed, people will feel secure.” Kalpana Purohit (30), gym instructor says, “I leave from my job only after 10:30 pm and take a black and yellow cab to Dadar station. The area near the gym becomes secluded, so installing GPS will make women commuters feel safe especially during late hours.”
Rs.200cr investment riding on Salman as judgment day nears A
s a local court is set to pronounce verdict in the hitand-run case involving the actor Salman on Wednesday, May 6, the film industry is keeping its fingers crossed as an investment of about Rs 200 crore is riding on him. "The film industry is hoping that nothing terrible happens. Either he is pronounced innocent or the least punishment is given," trade analyst Komal Nahata told PTI. His two upcoming films, 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan" which stars Kareena Kapoor and 'Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo' opposite Sonam Kapoor, are currently in the last schedule of shooting. Salman recently shot for 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' in Kashmir. Amod Mehra, another trade analyst, said Salman had committed to do four others films, including 'Dabang 3' and 'Entry Mein No Entry', but these were only at the stage of announcement. In all, an investment of Rs 200 crore is riding on Salman, who has delivered a string of box-office successes in the last few years, according to Nahata. The actor is accused of ramming his car, while drunk,
into a roadside bakery in Bandra in the early hours of September 28, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others. The maximum sentence he can get is a ten years' jail term, on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. After Sanjay Dutt, Salman is the second big star from Mumbai film industry to get embroiled in a high-profile criminal case in recent years. He is also facing trial in a Rajasthan court for hunting a black buck during the shooting of 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'. Meanwhile, actor Jacky Bhagnani said, "I am personally very very close to Salman Khan... But it's a court decision... I can't talk about it too much... I hope justice prevails." Veteran actor Anupam Kher said, "Salman is a wonderful person... I pray to the god he is happy after the verdict... He is a very good human being... I hope everything is sorted out." Actress Soha Ali Khan said she was praying that God give Salman and his family strength.
The problem of traffic jam and inconvenience to pedestrians at Bandra Terminus due to the illegal parking of vehicles and encroachment was discussed in a high level meeting called by Haji Imran Khan's Shiv Vahtuk Sena Joint Secretary (Maharashtra) at the DRM office of Mumbai central.

Not exemplary but a victory by a wide margin all the same VEN as Filipino Manny Pacquaio's E family members may feel more than a trifle done in by the verdict, which showed the American Floyd Mayweather to be a clear winner on points, the boxing world at large including, pundits and experts voiced the opinion that Mayweather, was a clear winner in this boxing battle. True, the manner in which Mayweather secured victory, was not exemplary as he clinched and steered clear of the doughty Filipino. But boxing is not just about untamed aggression, it is also about avoiding and weaving away from the punches thrown by an opponent. It is about avoiding punishment as one skillfully and adroitly avoids the barrage of blows thrown in quick succession by your rival. And in this particular aspect, Mayweather was the absolute master in this Fight of the Century. Not just Mother Earth, where a huge television turnout watched the battle, a copy of the fight has been sent to the astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station. Showtime Sports and HBO Sports have partnered with NASA to release the welterweight title unification bout, which came at the request of the ISS. This is the first time a pay-per-view blockbuster will be seen in space. The question remains, what now for Mayweather who remains undefeated with a record of 48-0. True, the bout took about five years to become an actuality, but even as the legend of Mayweather grows and glows, he himself said that he has one more fight before calling curtains on a splendid career. That fight is scheduled for September. Till then the very technically accomplished pugilist can keep adding to his already massive bank balance by way of endorsements. After all he received a nine-figure cheque for all the work in 12 rounds, as he emphatically displayed his superiority over Pacquaio.

T is unfortunate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is harassing and hounding the NGOs. Probably, the party’s leaders do not realize that many of its members were once themselves NGOs. When the Jana Sangh merged into the Janata Party after successfully resisting the authoritarian rule of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, they were part of the struggle to uphold human rights, which the then ruling Congress Party had trampled upon mercilessly. How can those very people be anti-NGOs now? Accounts of voluntary organizations are audited and checked by the Finance Ministry on a regular basis. All foreign funds come through the government channels. There is little scope for any hanky-panky. The change of procedure is nothing but harassment. Prior government sanction means an endless waiting for the urgently needed funds in the field where the activists work. I am surprised how the BJP has forgotten the probe against the Gandhi Peace Foundation was hauled over the coals after Mrs. Gandhi came to power in 1980. The then Jana Sangh workers were chastised unnecessarily. The BJP is only a new avatar of the Jana Sangh, which took part in movements for the assertion of individuals’ right to liberty and free speech.
Hindu ideology I know both Teesta Setelvad and Javed Anand. They enjoy an impeccable reputation for integrity. Their relentless fight against communal force is the bright chapter in the annals of secularism. The BJP is tilting towards the Hindu ideology is unfortunate, to say the least. But that does not mean those who are fighting against parochialism to underline the secular spirit of our Constitution should be getting the wrong end of the stick. After winning freedom, the constituent assembly discussed many forms of governance. But what came to be supported by all sections of the society was a secular polity. To undo that would mean mocking at the sacrifices which millions of people made to establish a democratic, secular republic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was reportedly behind the Gujarat riots which killed thousands of Muslims, has himself realized the futility of dividing the society on religious basis. It is a healthy development

that Modi himself now publicly says: Sab ka sarkar, sab ka vikas (Everybody’s government for everybody’s progresses). Unthinkingly some BJP members, who are under the influence of the RSS, are picking on members of minority communities and going to the extent of vandalizing the churches or indulging in conversions in the name of ghar wapsi. Modi should intervene at some stage to stop them from bringing a bad name to India which is admired for its spirit of tolerance and sense of accommodation.
too distressing. He cannot afford the rising cost of production from the farm. After a farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide at a public meeting in New Delhi, India’s capital, I thought that his death would touch the respondent chord and the nation would focus seriously its attention on how to improve the plight of the farmers. I must admit that I was wrong. There was a furore in Parliament all right. Prime Minister Modi too expressed his grief. Yet, it was business as usual soon after. The farmer was forgotten. I have not been able to draw up a blueprint on how to improve the farmer’s lot. In fact, the introduction of land acquisition bill in Parliament showed that the corporate sector has had its way.
Killing fields BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar I remember a Jews’ delegation calling on me when I was India’s High Commissioner at London. The delegates wanted to convey their gratefulness for the tolerance India had come to signify. They said that it was the only country in the world where the Jews had never faced any kind of discrimination. At that time New Delhi had not given recognition to Israel. Still they did not make any issue of it. What is disconcerting is that secularism which should have deepened its roots by this time has failed to do so. India has developed economically as it should have in the last 68 years since Independence. Maybe, a rapid economic development is the answer. In this context, the backwardness of villages testifies our failure. Farmers are the backbone of India’s economy. But they are suffering the most. Their countrywide suicides indicate that the benefit of production has not reached them. Even the basic amenity like clean drinking water is a mirage. Another farmer has committed suicide in a well-off state of Maharashtra. He is the ninth since March. The news from other states is
The concerns of the farmers, a pre-requisite, have been dropped. The matter has been pushed into the background. Even the Oppositions’ march, led by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is an event of the distant past. I do not have to remind that some 67 per cent of the people in the country depend on the fields which are increasingly becoming killing fields. Showing preference over the corporate sector, which no doubt provides jobs, will be against the ethos of the freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi focused attention on the people in rural areas and moved from a bustling city to a small place, Wardha, which later became an important town in the country. NGOs are carrying on the work of the Mahatma. The sanction to some 900 NGOs has been withdrawn because they have not kept the accounts properly. The purpose of auditing their income should be to see whether there is an overall pilferage of funds. Expecting them to maintain accounts is not wrong. But checking even the last paisa spent is asking for a little too much because these activists are engaged in day-to-day work at the grassroot level. The task which Teesta and Anand have embarked upon may not be to the liking of the ruling party because ideologically the two are poles apart. One stands for a composite society while the other is engaged in a task which is divisive. Both cannot coexist. The freedom was won for a secular democratic society and the society should stay with that purpose.
Praising can elevate the consciousness and bring energy O
FTEN when you praise, you praise in comparison to someone else. In order to praise one person, we put down someone else and when we want to point out someone’s mistake, we praise another. Some praise too little, and some are too shy to praise. Some are not accustomed to praising and just forget to do so. Some praise with motives, and some praise just to elevate. Others praise themselves in order to hide their low self-esteem. But real praise dawns in a blossomed state of consciousness. The praise that comes out of an elevated state of consciousness simply arises from the nature of consciousness and is quite different. Normally praise comes out of craving and pride. Praise that comes from a heightened consciousness always comes out of fulfilment. Praising can elevate the consciousness and bring enthusiasm and energy. But at the same time it can bring arrogance. Praising is a skill.
In the same way, you appreciate getting a ride from someone you do not know, but you may not appreciate it from a bus driver. TWO-day state visit of Afghanistan President Mohammed Ashraf Ghani to New Delhi has marked a transition in Afghanistan’s relations with India. Ghani’s predecessor Hamid Karzai was tough in his statements on Pakistan’s support for the Taliban. Karzai was seen as leaning more towards India. Now, Afghanistan has a new president as well as a new situation in the country. Ghani thinks that Taliban and terrorism are no longer the grave challenges that are confronting his country. It is essential to remember that Kabul is not concerned with the Pakistan Taliban also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) but with the Taliban in its own territory. Taliban continues to attack Afghan security forces despite the fact that negotiations are on to bring many of their local chieftains into the country’s political mainstream. That is why, the focus of Ghani’s talks with PM Narendra

BABA Ramdev's new 'googly' from his pharmacy company regarding a pill named 'Putra Jeevak Beej' that probably gives birth to a son is a mockery of not just the field of medicine but also the Almighty's cycle of birth and creation. People go to any extent for publicity and making money. Ramdev loves to be in the news but gender bias from the Yoga Guru is unacceptable and an insult to the fair sex. A child is God's creation and the Almighty solely decides the gender of a living creature which cannot be decided by medicines as living creatures are not manufactured in factories or laboratories. News channels or fish market? SO TV is supposed to be visual media? Right? Bovine Excreta. Look at the screen of most news channels. The bottom 20 percent has been swallowed with all sorts of details about the channel and programme and there is a continuous flashing or streaming of other information, distracting the viewer. Not to be biased the channels have also swallowed an equal amount of the top of the screen. More often than not an advertisement swallows more space on the left or right. Mumbai streets are filled with jampacked traffic, a slow moving assembly of vehicles that exhausts hazardous fumes that cause breathing problem, eyes to water, nose to run and you feel headache. Another major problems in urban cities are noise pollution and water scarcity. BMC should take proper care to prevent water wastage. Indisciplined city RECENTLY, a motorcyclist rode into a gas station from the exit side. His little son was sitting on the tank. I couldn't help myself and I approached him and told him that he ha done wrong. For a moment, he was dumbstruck as if he did not know what he had done. So, I added that his little son was observing his father breaking the law and would grow up believing that he can follow in his father's footsteps! He looked sheepishly at me and apologised but I will never know whether the lesson was well learnt. Thousands of children are watching their parents break the law in a hundred little ways. No matter how minor the offense is! If children are not taught these fundamental lessons of life, they will grow up as petty criminals like their parents. The need for inculcating discipline into one and all should be a priority for the government and for each citizen of India. Failing this, even fifty years in the future, we will still be the same as we are and not bothered to change.

Syedna declaratory suit to be heard after court vacation
Sharing info on expenses incurred on Obama visit is sensitive: MEA in RTI Prime Minister Narendra Modi flanked by US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, waving to the crowd during their India visit in New Delhi.
By Philip Varghese
T
hree months after the US President Barack Obama had come visiting India with a large contingent of dignitaries, RTI activist Anil Galgali had sought information from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) about the expenses incurred on the 3-day Obama visit. However, MEA refused saying that the information is very sensitive, confidential and it could have a bearing on bilateral relations with foreign states. RTI activist Anil Galgali had filed an RTI query seeking details of all types of expenses incurred on the 3-day
visit of the US President Barack Obama. In a reply to the query the Deputy Chief Protocol Officer, Rohit Rathish, of the MEA informed Galgali that every year the Indian Government hosts dignitaries of various foreign countries. “In these visits, the type of delegations, reasons for the visits, categorization, organisation, how is that visit hosted, how many cities does the delegation visit are different from each other and also it would not be wrong to say that every visit of a foreign delegation is unique. Under such circumstances the expenses incurred by the government on
each and every visit varies and also it is sensitive for the government. Divulging such sensitive information may negatively effect the bilateral relations with those foreign countries,” the reply said. Rathish further informed Galgali that, on the reasons stated and to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information's as per section 8(1)(c) of the RTI Act 2005, his RTI application is rejected. According to the stated section, any information which can hamper cordial relations in dealing with foreign affairs, should not be disclosed.Galgali has expressed astonishment at the
claim of the MEA and has questioned the motive of not revealing the expenses incurred. He is asking as to how revealing expenses incurred on the visit of any dignitary could hamper our foreign relations. “The Modi government, which claims transparency in its governance is actually trying to conceal the expenses running into crores of rupees by raising a bogey of sensitivity and confidentiality. The government should themselves inform every citizen regarding the various expenses incurred, as the money comes from the tax payers of this country,” Galgali pointed out.

yedna Khuzaima Qutbuddin was cross-examined in Mumbai High Court by Justice Gautam Patel last week. Qutbuddin had filed a suit to declare himself the spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohras, saying his late half-brother the 52nd Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin had secretly conferred ‘nass’ on him on December 10, 1965. After Syedna Burhanuddin's death in January 2014, his second son Mufaddal Saifuddin who was appointed in London in 2011 took over the mantle. During cross-examination, Syedna Khuzaima Qutbuddin informed the court that the late Syedna Muhammed Burhanuddin did not publicly reveal the 'nass' - the official declaration of succession, conferred on him apprehending 'swords would have been drawn'. He also added that his uncle Syedi Saleh Saifuddin, who was also the 'Mukasir' -
the third in rank after the Syedna and Masoon (successor designate) - had asked the Syedna why it was told by the Syedna in Gujarati that is had he done so, "talwaro chali jase ". When Mufaddal Saifuddin's advocate Iqbal Chagla, questioned why this alleged nass was conferred secretly, Syedna Qutbuddin replied, “It was Syedna's decision not mine. He asked me to keep it confidential and I obeyed.” “When the Syedna appointed me the Mazoon, in a sermon at the that time he referred to me as his beloved son and that was much more than a mazoon,” added Qutbuddin. Qutbuddin added that, “his late half-brothers had schemed against him. And attempts were made to assassinate him at Indore and Yemen.” Justice Gautam Patel has kept the matter for directions on June 15, 2015 and then the further schedule for further cross-examination will be decided.

She castigated Kejriwal saying, "You claim to protect the country's women but you cannot even protect your own party's female worker". Viswas, who has in the past too courted controversy over his alleged derogatory remarks against women, accused the media of playing into the hands of the BJP and of being 'extortionist'. "She registered a complaint 15 days back, but police has not taken any action yet. She had sent me a mail saying Kumar bhaiya, what should I do now? Thereafter, our AAP's legal cell asked her to register an FIR in this regard," said Vishwas. Vishwas said he was hurt by the "baseless allegations".

Living with
arthritis
Arthritis is a medical condition that can impact your life in a big way. From dealing with the pain to getting used to being unable to perform tasks that you used to with ease, the condition affects you emotionally as well as physically. Dev Goswami & Yamini Walia bring you a guide to help you learn how to live and deal with arthritis
W
e all have a basic idea about what arthritis is. The condition causes pain that affects your joints, often becoming so agonising that performing everyday activities can be a challenge. However, it’s only when someone you know well is afflicted by the inflammatory disorder that you begin to truly understand the nitty-gritty aspects of the condition. In extreme cases, arthritis can handicap you to such an extent that you find it difficult to get up on your own if you’ve been sitting for too long. Even in the best scenario, you’d have to think twice about tasks such as walking a lot or climbing up and down the stairs. While arthritis is a daunting disease to deal with, it is manageable. We spoke to several experts — Stian le Rouz (physiotherapist, ProSport Fitness & Sports Clinic), Dr. Hitesh Kubadia (hip & joint replacement surgeon, HKS Clinic, Dadar), Dr. Mudit Khanna (consultant orthopedic surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central) and Dr. Nidhi Shah (senior spine specialist, Qi Spine Clinic) — to bring you a guide that will help you manage the pain, ease the discomfort and improve your body’s physical response to the condition.
>> Arthritis is a difficult condition to manage. Following our tips and suggestions will make living with it easier
Managing daily life When you suffer from arthritis, you’re going to have both good and bad days. However, the pain is usually constant. Here a few precautions that you can take in order to deal with the pain, as well as manage your condition better.
experiMent with heat and cold for relief Some patients find that they’re more comfortable in warmer conditions, while others benefit from the cold. Dr. Mudit explains, “Heat increases blood flow to the affected region and helps you to deal with chronic pain. Going for a warm bath or using a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel can help

keep your joints warm. Cold can help reduce swelling and muscle spasms — so it’s especially good for the acute inflammation that you will feel during a flare-up. This will create a numbing effect.”
Massage yourself Or get one at a spa. Regular massages can help to relax your muscles and improve their condition by increasing blood flow. This can provide temporary relief from localised pain. But, remember not to massage an inflamed

joint. Instead, massage the muscles around the inflamed joint to promote circulation.
experiMent with splints If a joint is overly inflamed, it becomes prone to further damage and may become more painful. At such times, protecting the joint with a splint will help.
learn to relax Relaxing is a good way to combat pain. Dr. Mudit explains, “When you are very tense,

your muscles will compress your joints. This leads to pain. Learning how to relax can help you to reverse these effects and relieve pain.”

Caregiver tips If you live with someone who suffers from arthritis, keep the following tips in mind. n Caregivers need to educate themselves about arthritis and learn more about its effects. So, make sure that you stay informed. n Speak to the patient’s doctor to find out more about the role and side-effects of all the medicine that they’re taking. n Ensure that the patient performs the prescribed exercises and make sure that they are as active as they can be. n Make sure that they follow a healthy diet. n Make sure that you’re mentally strong and physically available to help them as and when required.

analyse meDiCations Most patients who suffer from arthritis eventually begin a course of medication to control the pain and reduce the swelling. A lot of these medications however, interact with over-the-counter drugs that are taken for other underlying medical conditions. These antiinflammatory medications can have side effects. So, make sure that your medication does not react negatively with anything else you might be taking — ask your doctor before choosing any holistic or herbal supplements.
no smoking Smoking is bad for your health whether you’re
at risk of any ailments or not. To top it off, if you suffer from arthritis, you need to avoid it completely. A Swedish study found that smokers who suffer from early arthritis are less likely to respond to treatment.
Arthritis is a physical condition, so it’s important to follow a good workout routine that will help you to mange it. At the same time, you should also make some modifications and follow these tips to avoid aggravating the condition with unnecessary strain. Stian tells us what you need to bear in mind: n Perform exercises that take your joints through their full range of motion without putting extra load on them. n Walking or cycling are both good exercises because they don’t stress your joints. However, remember to perform these exercises on an even surface. n Always remember to stretch your upper and lower body muscles after walking or cycling. This helps to prevent joint and muscle stiffness. n If you suffer from chronic pain in a specific joint, make sure that you modify the exercise that affects it the most. For example, if your knees are hurting, decrease the amount of repetitions when you perform squats. Similarly, if you experience aches and pains in your elbows, reduce the
regular CheCk-ups Immunisations of any sort — flu shots and pneumonia vaccines — are even more important if you suffer from arthritis, as they help improve your condition. Follow recommendations for your age group for cancer screenings such as mammograms. Check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels and make sure that you take all the medication prescribed by your doctor on time and at the correct dose.
Diet anD arthritis The connection between diet and arthritis is surrounded by much debate. Scientifically speaking, there is very little evidence that points to what you eat having a direct effect on your condition. Dr. Mudit explains, “No special diet or miracle food can cure arthritis. There is no scientific evidence that a special diet will cure any form of arthritis, or that specific foods have an effect on the condition, except in the case of gout.” Dr. Hitesh agrees, adding, “Several patients say that certain diets increase their pain, but scientifically, no diet has been proven as increasing or decreasing the discomfort.” For gout, Dr. Nidhi tells us that you should avoid consuming pulses and cereals as the metabolism of protein increases the production of uric acid. This forms crystals and can
aggravate your condition. However, both Dr. Mudit and Dr. Hitesh also tell us that even though diet and arthritis may not be directly connected, it is important to follow a well-balanced diet. The reason for this is that a simple, well-balanced diet will help to balance your weight, which in turn will reduce the load on your joints, helping you to manage the condition better. And, that’s not all. Stian also recommends avoiding foods that are known to increase inflammation — even if you’re healthy. He tells us that food items such as processed sugar, saturated fats, trans fats, refined carbohydrates, MSG, gluten, alcohol and certain artificial sweeteners can lead to inflammation and exaggerated pain. So, it’s best to eliminate these from your diet.
>> There is no miracle diet to help treat arthritis. But, low impact exercises such as cycling can help to manage it better
weight of the dumbbells you use in order to avoid stressing the joint. n It is important to maintain excellent posture when you’re working out — speak to a trainer if you aren’t sure about the form for a particular exercise — in order to reduce your risk of suffering from injuries. n An easy way to ensure that your form is perfect is to exercise in front of the mirror. This makes it easy for you to see if you lose your form or posture at any stage of an exercise.
everyDay preCautions If you suffer from arthritis, there are several things that you should steer clear of in your daily routine. Dr. Mudit, Dr. Hitesh and Stian tell us about a few. n Avoid eating fried, fatty and unhealthy food in order to maintain a healthy body weight. Excess body weight will aggravate arthritis. n Avoid wearing uncomfortable footwear. Switch to wearing well cushioned, jointfriendly shoes, as these help to reduce the load on your knees. n Don’t perform high impact exercises. Instead, focus on low-impact, joint friendly exercises such as walking on level ground, cycling and swimming. n Make sure that you start a new exercise programme gradually — overdoing it too early is a sure-fire way to get hurt. n Avoid strenuous activities such as sitting on the floor, squatting, kneeling or using an Indian toilet. Store items in drawers that you can access easily. n When you’re at work, Stian recommends that you change your position often so that you don’t end up with bad posture for too long. n It’s important to rest and give your muscles enough time to recover. n When you’re working out, remember not to do too much too soon, especially when it comes to weight training. n If one of your joints hurts for a long period of time, avoid performing exercises that can impact that particular joint. Ask your doctor or a physiotherapist to help you out.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2015 >> The TOPS diet promotes sensible eating habits
ExpErt AdvicE Celebrity nutritionist Suman Agarwal considers this plan with mixed feelings. She says, “It is a good program for nutritional awareness and works as a tool to educate people. But, the results will vary from person to person. We believe that the crux of the diet is portion control, disciplined follow-ups and identifying the root cause. No one diet can suit all, so dietary needs change with height, frame size, age, sex and health issues. Diets should be designed according to individual needs.”

TOP IT UP For those who want to steer clear of fad diets and instead want to make some nutritious changes, the TOPS diet is a good place to start. Sara Shah tells you more
W
e know that we said this article is for those who were interested in changing diets, but this isn’t really about a diet. It’s about an international, nonprofit weight-loss support group! TOPS stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly and was formed in the year 1948, in Milwaukee. Its founder, Esther Manz, created the support group with the sole purpose of helping overweight and obese people lose weight, at a time when eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia had only recently come into focus. Read on to find out more.
thE diEt plAn As the name suggests, the TOPS diet does not use a specific plan, but instead, promotes sensible, healthy eating. The support group encourages its members to seek help and get advice from their physicians to create a diet that has been tailored specifically to their physical needs. The group discourages all fad diets, weight loss pills, supplements and ‘magical’ weight loss solutions. All you have to do is create a balanced diet that includes all the vital nutrients that your body needs. Of course, it also includes a regular exercise regimen.
diEts AvAilAblE You need to be part of the group to understand exactly how this works there, but there are two diet plans that are endorsed by the organisation, which are available on the internet for you to check out. The first is the Food Exchange System, a diet regimen that was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Diabetes Association. The other is called the MyPlate
>> The MyPlate plan requires you to fill up half your plate with fruits and vegetables and the other half with lean protein and whole grains plan, which was recommended by the US federal government in 2011!
thE Food ExchAngE systEm In this diet, all your foods are classified into six categories: starch, meat, fruit, vegetables, milk and fat. Each item in a particular category can be interchanged with another food item from that same category. So, an English muffin can be exchanged for a slice of bread, because they fall into the starch group and contain the same amount of carbohydrates.
thE myplAtE plAn The MyPlate plan does not contain any specific eating plans, but instead, requires
you to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables and the other half with lean protein and whole grains.
pros And cons There are no major pros and cons of this diet, but there are certain things to remember if you’re incorporating the TOPS diet. The good news is that you will be aware of what you are eating and can balance each meal according to the guidelines. It is also quite inexpensive when compared with other diet programs. However, this diet plan does not incudes guidelines for portion control or calorie counts, so there is a possibility that the plan won’t work for everyone.
Pumpkin seed oil is in, coconut oil is out. At least for now. Anindra Siqueira takes you through the latest health fad that includes the oil from the seeds of this Halloween fruit
L
ast year, coconut oil was touted as the go-to health product — it was known to help with everything from losing belly fat and reducing your LDL cholesterol, to protecting you from seizures and working as an effective sunscreen. It could also help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s! So, this year is turning into the year of the pumpkin, especially for the uber health-conscious. The humble pumpkin is gaining popularity and the oil obtained from its seeds is supposed to be even better than coconut oil. Pumpkin seed oil is a dark green oil, which is pressed from either raw or roasted pumpkin seeds. It has a rich, nutty flavour and is a good source of fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6). But, why is it suddenly so popular? For starters, pumpkin seed oil can help reduce LDL cholesterol and contains anti-oxidants in the form of vitamin A and E, which may play a role in maintaining healthy skin. Pumpkin seed oil can also help with prostate problems and studies have shown that pumpkin seed extracts have a positive effect on bladder and urethra function. And, while there have been claims that pumpkin seed oil is as effective as an arthritis drug in relieving chronic rheumatoid arthritis, these effects may be due to the antioxidant and fatty acid content, as well as other chemicals present in small quantities, working together to create positive effects. Then there have been studies, which suggest that eating pumpkin seeds can benefit kidney function and may even prevent kidney stones. Pumpkin oil is also known to have antiparasitic properties and can boost hair health— it could give your hair a youthful shine! If you want to incorporate pumpkin seed oil in your diet, mix it with some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, and use it as a salad dressing. You can also use it to add flavour to soups and sauces. However, avoid frying with it, as high temperatures can damage its structure. >> Pumpkin seed oil is being touted as the next big thing

unDErSTAnDinG DEMEnTiA Tally your answers with this answer key to find out more about dementia 1. AnSwEr: A. TruE
7. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
Dementia presents itself as a broad range of symptoms that can be caused by various diseases. There are four types of dementia (read our issue next week to find out more about them). The more common Alzheimer’s and the rare Parkinson’s disease can also lead to dementia-like symptoms.
Memory loss is only one of the symptoms of dementia. Also, unlike dementia, memory loss is considered to be a natural part of ageing. To be diagnosed with dementia, you should be suffering from other symptoms such as a difficulty in communicating, problems with balance and delusions. Diagnosing it can be pretty complex, so leave it to the experts.
2. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
8. AnSwEr: A. TruE.
While it is true that dementia is much more common among people who are over 85-years-old, it also affects people in their thirties. Relatively young people can suffer from dementia if they’ve had head injuries, brain infections or strokes. Early-onset Alzheimer’s is another form of dementia that strikes when you’re relatively young (in your 50s).
Just because people with dementia have trouble communicating, it doesn’t mean that they lose their ability to understand what’s happening around them. They know exactly what is happening and also what they want. They may find it difficult to explain in words; so making notes about their behavioural patterns can help you understand what they’re trying to say.
3. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
Scientists initially suspected that aluminium exposure was somehow linked to dementia. However, research has failed to find a substantial connection.
9. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
4. AnSwEr: A. TruE.
Dementia affects a person’s memory and you may think that correcting them will help. But, constant nagging can make them depressed or aggressive, and confuse them more. Instead, promote their socialising skills by talking to them. For example, if they (incorrectly) tell you that they once had a dog named Roxy, ask them about the dog instead of pointing out that they never had one.
5. AnSwEr: A. TruE.
Drug abuse has numerous negative effects — some of them
potentially fatal. But, studies have not found sufficient proof to link drug abuse with the risk of developing dementia yet.
6. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
This myth originates because dementia is a progressive disease that, only becomes worse as you age. However, there is a lot that you can do to slow down the progression. Apart from medication, doctors, caregivers and loved ones all play an important role in managing this condition.
The medical fraternity and scientists were once extremely fascinated by ginkgo biloba and its promising ability to boost cognitive function. However, research has failed to come up with any evidence to substantiate these claims.
10. AnSwEr: B. FAlSE.
Several factors can be inherited, but many conditions can still be prevented. A healthy lifestyle, diet and working out every day can go a long way in preventing diseases and complications — of the body or the mind. This applies to dementia as well. Talk to a doctor to find out what you can do to lower your risk.

Use dUmbbells
differently Tired of the bicep curls that you usually perform with your dumbbells? Anindra Siqueira tells you how you can use your dumbbells to strengthen more muscle groups at one go
A word of cAution When you’re incorporating dumbbells into your workout routine, you should ensure that you maintain the right form and that you don’t exceed the weight limit that your body can handle, since the risk of injury is higher when you’re performing such exercises. Also, make sure that you pick up and put the dumbbells down carefully — most injuries occur because people are careless when they put them down.
O
kay, so you’re tired of your boring, old workout routine and your body has gotten used to monotonous pushups and squats. Doing the same thing over and over again can leave you bored, tired and demotivated. To get the most from a workout, you need to make it fresh and challenging. Switching things up and adding in something new, challenges your brain and stimulates it to keep you interested. Here we tell you about a few interesting exercises that you can try with your dumbbells. Friroz Hussain, a personal trainer, tells us that most people think about dumbbells as equipment that is only used to build strong arms, which is a misconception. Dumbbells can help you tone your entire body. The primary benefit of using dumbbells in your workout is that you won’t only be working out large muscles, but also developing and stabilising your muscles. Doing such exercises also allows muscles that generally work together to be targeted simultaneously. This will prevent muscle groups from developing independent of one another (and lopsidedly) and by keeping them in sync.
for tHE LEGS
n the dumbbell lunge This is one of the simplest moves to
perform with a pair of dumbbells. Simply hold them by your side while you perform lunges. You can perform a stationary lunge or a reverse lunge, but make sure that you keep your back straight and your upper body steady during the movement. Since the exercise works your legs (specifically your thighs), it helps to enhance your jumping and running ability. And since both legs move differently >> Perform lunges with dumbbells for long, lean legs
>> The seated side lateral raise is targets and tones the chest
during a lunge, you can use the exercise to strengthen your weaker side. If your right leg is stronger, do a couple of reps more when you’re working out with your left leg.
for tHE ABdoMinALS
n weighted crunch The weighted crunch will put more
strain on your abdominals, forcing them to adapt. This is especially useful if you can do 2,000 sit-ups a day (like Jake Gyllenhall!). Lie on your back holding a dumbbell on your chest. Raise your upper body until your shoulder blades are slightly off the ground. Hold the pose for a brief moment and then lower yourself back down. It’s important to remember that straightening up completely doesn’t really work out your abs — the range of motion that works them out is limited. This is why it is best to hold your position for a few seconds before lowering yourself again.
for tHE SHouLdErS
n Seated side lateral raise This is a simple exercise and is
best performed with light weights. Hold one dumbbell in each hand and place them by your side when you’re in a seated position. Raise both dumbbells simultaneously, until your arms are parallel to the ground. Hold this position momentarily and then slowly lower your arms. This exercise targets several muscle groups and strengthens your core. Just make sure that you don’t use very heavy weights. n the wall sit and front raise This exercise works your shoulders, pecs and core. Stand with your back straight and
shoulders against a wall, with a dumbbell in each hand and slide down until your knees are bent at a 90° angle. Lift your hands up simultaneously, extending them in front of you until they are parallel to the floor. Hold for a few seconds and then lower them slowly.
for tHE cHESt
n Straight-arm pullover Performing dumbbell exercises that
mimic the bench press exercise isn’t the only way to work your chest. To perform a straight-arm pullover, lie on your back at the edge of a bench or a bed and hold one dumbbell with both hands. Extend your hands over your head and then slowly raise the dumbbell. Hold this position and then lower your arms. This works your upper chest as well as your shoulders and triceps. However, make sure that you perform the movements slowly and that you have a spotter, especially when you’re new to this exercise.
for tHE BAcK
n one arm row While you can do a dead lift with dumbbells,
we recommend starting off with something even simpler. Find a surface to lean against, such as a bench or a bed, and position yourself bent forwards, holding a dumbbell in one hand, extended towards the floor. Rest your other hand on the bench or bed and straighten your legs. Lift the dumbbell by bringing your upper arm parallel to the floor, hold it for a moment and then lower the dumbbell. The exercise works your shoulder and back and helps you get the perfect V-shape.

H
ow many times have you been advised to stay away from drinks that contain chocolate? However many calories they threaten to put on, you will be thrilled to find that chocolate milk may actually be the best thing to drink after a workout! Scientists have found that this beverage contains all the nutrients that your body needs to help you recover after a rigorous workout. The proteins in the drink help heal your muscles and the calories replace those that are burned when you exercise. According to researchers at Cornell University, chocolate milk does a great job, in fact a better one than other sports
drinks. So, researchers decided to create the best post-exercise beverage, after watching athletes overeating at night to compensate for their tough, challenging training regimes. They used a computer software to develop a formula for the best product and combined it with advice from nutrition specialists. The researchers tried adding Omega 3, the health fatty acid, into the drink, but it increased the fat content too much. They also tried adding more sugar, but then realised that doing so may lead to stomach problems. Clint Wattenberg, the coordinator of
sports nutrition at Cornell, said that after numerous experiments, they settled on a 230ml bottle of chocolate milk. Their modified chocolate milk contained 16g of protein and 230 calories for every 230ml serving. A regular bottle of packaged chocolate milk contains just 8g of protein and 160 calories. Clint explains, “20g of protein is optimal for muscle recovery for an average athlete. This composition of low-fat chocolate milk is probably the gold standard for a recovery beverage.” So, it’s time to bid adieu to all those protein shakes and switch to chocolate milk!

ith exceptions, most women want to have children. But, there are women who don’t want to simply because they are scared. Yes, we know that childbirth can be quite gory, but women usually get past that. However, there are some who never get rid of this fear — they suffer from a disorder called tokophobia. Read on as we tell you more.

Burning love Playing this popular Elvis Presley number may be a good way to spice things up a little in the bedroom. But, when there is a literal burn when it comes to your bedroom activity, it’s time to start singing Doctor! Doctor! Dev Goswami tells you about a few common reasons for painful sex
S
what you’re doing is wrong. This psychological mindset causes a physiological response and your vagina literally shuts down. You need to visit a doctor and pointedly ask about this condition as vaginismus is usually not the first condition that doctors look at when you complain about painful intercourse.
ex is such a taboo subject that most of us won’t even know or be bold enough to find out what’s going on when it feels like there is something wrong. When the oohhs and aahhs turn into arghs and ouches, you need to realise that you have a problem. Painful sex is a condition that even has its own medical term — dyspareunia. Mostly seen among women, pain during sex can be due to several reasons. While consulting a gynaecologist is the best course of action, knowing about the possible causes will help as well. Take a look at what can cause painful intercourse.
emoTional facTors
white discharge and an uncomfortable itch. Over-the-counter anti-fungal creams will cure this problem. But, it is prudent to visit a doctor so that you can rule out other, more serious causes such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or STDs.
You know that emotions can affect your sex drive. But, they can also lead to painful sex — directly as well as indirectly. Being depressed, anxious or overly concerned about your physical appearance can make it difficult for you to feel aroused, which can lead to painful sex. On the other hand, stress has a direct impact on sex and in cases of extreme stress, your pelvic muscles tend to contract and tighten, which results in pain during intercourse. Reducing stress and building up a positive self image will help deal with these causes. You may need to ask friends and family for help — in fact, it’s recommended that you do.
Vaginismus
peyronie’s Disease
This is a rare problem, but one that you need to be aware of. Vaginismus causes your vaginal muscles to contract involuntarily. This basically means that it clamps shut, making entry difficult or impossible. It can lead to excruciating pain — it’s almost as though your vagina has a “do not enter” sign over it! The causes are known to range from a history of sexual abuse to coming from a culture that regards premarital sex as immoral. In the latter scenario, it can lead you to believe that
While painful sex is rare for men, if it does happen, Peyronie’s disease may be to blame. The condition, which usually affects men, leads to the development of scar tissue in your penis, which causes it to curve or bend more than usual. This can cause pain during sex and in extreme cases, can make it impossible to have sex. Visiting a doctor is the only thing you can do as you’ll need to undergo a series of tests. Treatment can range from medication to surgery.
insufficienT luBricaTion This is the easiest to treat, but probably the most common reason for painful sex. Female bodies biologically produce lubrication to moisten the vagina, which allows sex to be painless. However, a lack of foreplay or not being aroused enough, as well as medical conditions such as vaginal dryness, can lead to insufficient lubrication, which can lead to pain. There are several over-the-counter lubricants that you can use to help you resolve this problem.
infecTion Another common reason, this one occurs because most of us are too embarrassed or shy to talk about any signs of medical problems down there. Yeast infections are common amongst both men and women and can make sex painful for both. The symptoms for men include burning and itching on the tip of the penis, while for women, the infection shows up as thick,
Tokophobia is the fear of pregnancy and childbirth, which is common amongst women. It is very common for women to feel anxious when they think about pregnancy and childbirth, as it is a major event in a woman’s life. But, for tokophobics, this anxiety transitions to full-blown panic attacks and terror. Women who suffer from this disorder usually end up childless. Tokophobia is fairly rare, but several studies have been conducted to show that this disorder affects anywhere from 3-8% of women around the world. It can even go undetected as many women are too shy to talk about the issue. Treatments for tokophobia include consulting a psychiatrist or a mental health professional who will provide counselling. It also helps to talk to your partner openly to help them better understand your reluctance to have a child.
sympToms
n Depression Depression during pregnancy is a
symptom of this disorder. And, while it may be quite normal for pregnant women to feel depressed or experience mood swings, these changes usually don’t last very long. Prolonged depression is what you need to keep an eye out for.
n overuse of contraceptives Women with
tokophobia tend to go overboard with their use of contraceptives and insist on using multiple contraceptives in order to avoid getting pregnant.
n Birth defect belief People who suffer from
tokophobia also have a fear of giving birth to a baby with some complication or defect. Pregnant women generally do have such fears, but when they turn into an obsession, it can be a possible sign of tokophobia.

face the facts Move over hair serums — facial serums have entered the beauty market. But, are they really beneficial? Yamini Walia tells you a little more about the popular skin solution
what are facial serums?
dear Barbara, I have noticed that every time I wear earrings, or jewellery that isn’t made of gold, the skin around my piercing turns green and itchy. It then starts oozing pus and becomes raw. I don’t like to wear gold all the time as I love costume jewellery. What should I do? — saba Kazi, cotton Green dear saba, Your skin isn’t reacting very well to costume jewellery. And, from what you have described, we are assuming that all the jewellery you’ve been wearing is artificial. Your skin seems to be hyper sensitive to metals other than gold, so we suggest you switch to sterling silver. We can’t promise you as wide a choice, but it is something that you’re going to have to do to save your skin.
During the summer, you need a light skin solution that gets absorbed quickly. This is an essential attribute of facial serums, which can be used as an alternative and also as a supplement to your face cream. The biggest difference between creams and serums lies in their formulation. Serums don’t include airtight, moisturising ingredients such as petroleum jelly or mineral oil (that most lotions contain), which keep water from evaporating. They also contain fewer lubricating and thickening agents such as nut or seed oils, and are mostly water-based, resulting in the elimination of any oil-based ingredients altogether. Dr. Apratim Goel, dermatologist and laser surgeon, tells us, “Serums are basically lightweight products, which contain light-textured small molecular weight particles that have a higher concentration of active ingredients.”
15 minutes before using the serum. Dr. Apratim explains, “People who have sensitive skin need to be careful, because facial serums can sometimes react negatively with their skin.” So, allow your skin to dry completely as this helps to slow down penetration. n If you think that you can’t apply your favourite moisturiser with a serum, you’re wrong. Simply apply your serum first, so that it isn’t blocked from being absorbed by your skin.
how are they Beneficial? There are several facial serums available in the market, and they are all aimed at solving common skin problems. So, the benefits may vary. But, here are a few general ones that apply to all.
how do i apply them? This is where most of us will falter — learning how to apply facial serums. We recommend using these tips to make sure you’re applying them correctly. n After cleaning your face with a cleanser or a face wash, apply a pea-sized amount of serum on your face, patting it evenly over your skin with a finger. n If you have sensitive skin, wait for 10 to
>> Apply a face serum after washing or cleansing your face
n Since serums contain high levels of
nourishing ingredients, all of them help restore moisture and elasticity to your skin, while regulating oil production. n They hydrate, nourish and brighten your skin, while preventing acne. n Most face creams contain only 5-10 % of active ingredients, whereas facial serums can contain up to 70%. This means that they contain a much greater concentration of beneficial nutrients. n They also help to strengthen your skin cells.
precautions You have to be careful while picking out a facial serum. Dr Abhay Talati, dermatologist at Skin Space, tells us that serums can be effective if you use the right products for your skin type, depending on the problem you have. He adds, “It is always a good idea to consult your dermatologist before choosing a product. Skin specialists can assess your skin type and suggest the right product.” Dr. Apratim adds, “Though they are best suited for oily skin, serums need to be used along with other skin care products if you have dry skin.” Serums aren’t for everyone, especially people who suffer from chronic conditions such as eczema or rosacea. In such cases, serums may penetrate too quickly, leading to irritation.

Its policies have given the opportunity to opposition parties to get together because it has failed to fulfil the people's aspirations the BJP had generated during the Lok Sabha election campaign and its steps have further worsened the situation, he said.

acknowledged that the 21st century belongs to Asia and Buddha's teachings would be the inspiration and guiding spirit for Asia, as it showed the world the path to relief from problems of conflict and hatred. "Buddha's words had immense power and that is why the world accepted him," he underlined. The Prime Minister said Lord Buddha was conscious towards individual emancipation as well as social reform and had sensed the importance of uniting people towards a noble cause. He said Lord Buddha's teaching of "Atta Deepo Bhavah" – "Be your own light" – was one of the greatest management lessons ever, contained in just three words. Lord Buddha had always championed the cause of dalits, oppressed and deprived classes of the society beside empowerment of women, Modi said. He did not believe in "ekla chalo" (march alone) but always laid emphasis on bringing people together, which has inspired dalit icon Baba Ambedkar. "Lord Buddha wanted evolution in the society... The issues being discussed presently were taken up by Lord Buddha 2500 years ago. His teachings are relevant in this age also," the Prime Minister said. Taking a dig at his critics, Modi said he, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, had placed a statue each of Lord Buddha at the entrance of the state Secretariat and his official residence but "apparently their (critics') attention has not gone to that aspect. Otherwise, they would have flogged me."He said he proposes to build an impressive Buddha temple in his ancestral place Vadnagar in Gujarat where materials related to the founder of Buddhism had been found.

It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 8220 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound until 2.50 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 8346 points level at 3.28 p.m. and then turned into a range bound until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 126 points and closed above the psychologically important 8300 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 47 were gainers while just 3 stocks closed in the red. All the secotral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in oil & gas, PSU and realty stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 31.27%. This change is substantial but indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1161 were gainers, 300 were losers and 30 remained unchanged. Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal).

Support (1) = 8253. Support (2) = 8174. Resistance (1) = 8378. Resistance (2) = 8425. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a long white body candle. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive. Further, the index has crossed above its 5 and 200 day moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were negatively trended are now turning neutral. All these indicate a positive bias. However, the index iis still below its 15 and 25 day moving averages and both the averages are declining. This is negative. Investors are advised to adopt a wait and watch policy, until a clearer signal emerges.

free trade agreement (FTA) between India and China may put India at disadvantage as China enjoys an edge in the manufacturing sector as well as tariff rates, according to Assocham. The industry chamber has pointed out that the benefits of an FTA between the two neighbours may accrue to China, at least in the short term. "An FTA between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and India certainly goes in favour of PRC and is disadvantageous to India at least in
the short run. This is because of the higher tariff regime in India," Assocham said, adding "At this juncture, an FTA with China will reinforce the existing trade asymmetries between the two countries." The Indian manufacturing industry has in the past expressed its reservations over such an arrangement with China. The industry has been complaining of dumping of Chinese products in India, which has already imposed anti-dumping duties on them. "In view of the comparative advantage China enjoys in the manu-
facturing sector, any form of trade agreement between the two has to tread cautiously. India's opening up of the trade sector has to be carefully calibrated to balance interests of domestic manufacturing over the medium term," Assocham said. It suggested that Indian exports to China should move beyond primary goods. To tap the huge Chinese market, Indian exporters should target China's demand for consumer goods and plug into its supply chain networks, the chamber said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China on May 14-16.

He was speaking at the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) workshop here, which was organised by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

old imports surged 19.5% to reach USD 34.32 billion in 201415 due to declining prices and easing of restrictions by the Reserve Bank. Imports of the metal were USD 28.7 billion the previous fiscal, 2013-14.Increase in gold imports impacts the country's trade deficit, which has reached USD 137 billion in 2014-15, and the current account deficit (CAD). The imports almost doubled in March to USD 4.98 billion which pushed the trade deficit to a fourmonth high of USD 11.79 billion for the month, according to the Commerce Ministry data. India is the largest importer of gold, which mainly caters to the demand of the jewelery industry. The Reserve Bank and the government have maintained that the CAD level is comfortable, but the spike in gold imports may spark fresh worries.
cates that the sector is expanding, while a figure below that level means contraction. "Despite recording softer rates of expansion, the Indian manufacturing sector held its ground in April, benefiting from ongoing improvements in operating conditions," Markit Economist Pollyanna De Lima said. The headline index was recorded above the crucial 50.0 threshold for the 18th successive month. "However, we are yet to see growth leading to meaningful job creation, as the index measuring employment has shown little change to staff numbers since the beginning of 2014," Lima added. April saw companies maintain a
cost-cautious approach to hiring and vast majority of panelists signaled no change in employment levels. On the price front, tariffs fell for the first time since May 2013, as firms responded to a weaker cost inflation, HSBC said. "Even with the slower pace of expansion, the goods-producing sector is on course to provide a boost to the overall economy in the upcoming quarter," Lima added. In the monetary policy review in April, RBI kept the key policy rate unchanged on fears of unseasonal rain impacting food prices. It has reduced repo rate by a total of 0.5 per cent since January. The next review is due in the first week of next month.

ime Pass 2 as was Time Pass is a good watch on a sultry hot day. Director Ravi Jadhav has new characters in the film as Dagdu and Prajakta from the original are grown up and played by Priyadarshan Jadhav and Priya Bapat, but Prathmesh Parab and Ketaki Mategaonkar act as their alter ego. The love of Dagdu and Prjakata which didn’t result in matrimony in the original is all set to fructify the love of the two lovers from the original albeit with a few hindarances like the conservative father of Prajakta aka Shakaal (Vaibhav Mengle) and how Dagdu Parab in his new avatar tries to convince Parajakta, who now works as a group dancer in films
A GOOD SEQUEL!
and her father who has retired to his village in Konkan by masquerading as a well learned officer and a rich person with the help of his three friends and he almost succeeds. What happens then? Do Dagdu and Praju get married? The film is full of hilarious situations and dialogues and raises laughter quite often. There is hardly a dull moment in
the film. The film is technically of a high standard product and the Konkan locales look beautiful on screen and the colorful cinematography by Vasudev Rane makes the film appealing. The music by Chinar Mahesh is peppy. The performances are all good and Priyadarshan Jadhav is a good find in comedy. Priya Bapat looks petite and acts well. The rest of the cast includes Uday Sabnis, Sampada Kulkarni Joglekar and Supriya Pathare. Sandeep Pathak, Nayan Jadhav, Sameer Khandekar, Chinmay Kelkar, Kshiti Jog, Manda Wadagbalkar, lend good support. Sonalee Kulkarnee junior’s item song will get wolf whistles. Ketaki Mategaonkar and Prathamesh Parab do well in their cameos. All in all, a film worth a dekko.
Tarang festival broadly based on the Bhagavad Gita held at the ISKCON auditorium By Vijay Shanker
T
he Tarang Festival of music, dance and religious discourse for a rightful living was held at the ISKCON auditorium and organised by ISKCON Youth Forum. Broadly based on the Bhagavad Gita, the performances revealed as to how the Bhagavad Gita forms the essence of life and how it is necessary to absorb and imbibe and practise the teachings for a peaceful and happy life. The International Shree Kirshna Consciousness was
founded by His Excellency Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada towards the propagation and promotion of Krishna Consciousness with the Mahamantra "Hare Krishna,Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare" which has now become an international movement. In order to ascertain the significance of Krishna Consciouness based on the Bhagavad Gita varied programmes are held regularly for youth and others as well. On this occasion, the play 'Mera Bharata Kahan' was presented by the youth artists who are all devotees. The play depicted as to how today's youth is trying to follow the west and failing to understand the basic values of life and the significance of Indian culture and tradition. It is strange that the west is drawn to India for its spiritual quality of life and the youth is drawn to the modernity and fast paced life without any peace and purpose in life. Besides the dance by all the participants, the highlight was the speech rendered by full time monks Sundar Chaitanya Das and Adbhuta Hari Das from Germany who is completely transformed by Krishna consciousness. The youth were impressed by the content and the depth of the lectures.

Wait until the afternoon for matters to resolve themselves before you get rattled and voice your discomfort. Plan your further work schedules. In personal relationships avoid confrontations in your own interest. Minor upsets in love are to be tackled diplomatically and gently.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Circumstances could put you in a quandary; take time off to think about it. You are sure to find a suitable answer to your problem. You seem to feel intuitively about someone, or some work, but are not able to rationalize your feeling. Follow your hunch and discover that you are right. Taking advantage of your current vulnerability, someone may try to get close to your not with the best of intentions. CANCER (June 21 - July 21): A proposal you had refused earlier may be extended to you again. Don’t let personal bias come in the way of your work and business. Too much attitude could create more problems for you in relationships. A little time off from your hectic schedule will help you to unwind. For those who are keen to settle down a good marriage proposal could come through a family friend or someone known to you.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Avoid arguments with colleagues for that could vitiate the atmosphere at work. Be firm but not offensive. People look up to you for strength so you cannot afford to be inept. Expenses are high, but if you work out your plan systematically the money invested now will bring manifold profit. In marital relationships keep calm for there could be a clash of opinion over minor issues. It may have to do with investments.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Find time to plan for what lies ahead rather than reflect on the past. You will be successful in dealing with your problems if you give yourself another chance. You will have the support of family who believes in you and have the faith that you will be successful in what you want to do. For peace and harmony in the family make extra effort. It will be easier for you to make compromises rather than expect others to change.
CAPRICORN (December 21 January 19): You are on a threshold of a vital breakthrough which will make way for tremendous growth. Concentrate and move ahead. These are rare moments. Good news you are waiting for is conveyed by evening. You can look forward to substantial monetary gains coming your way. Be warmer in your love and affection to achieve a better rapport with your beloved. You will be very happy because you have discharged a great responsibility towards your family or someone you love.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You will come across a lucrative deal with prospects of immediate benefits. But you should guard against disgruntled elements that could cause trouble. Try to handle your work independently to avoid any mischief from others. A relaxed evening at home will make you feel better. A surprise phone call or message will set your heart aflutter. Romance is in the air and you can expect exciting moments of togetherness.

Resurgent Mumbai take on inconsistent Delhi in key contest
Mumbai Indians players celebrate the dismissal of a Kings XI Punjab batsman at Mohali.
By S S Ramaswamy
M
umbai: High on confidence after their third consecutive, Mumbai Indians will hold a clear edge over the inconsistent Delhi Daredevils in their key IPL cricket match at the Wankhede Stadium here today. The comprehensive 23run victory over bottomplaced Kings XI Punjab at Mohali has given the resurgent MI the perfect shot in the arm to take on Daredevils who have blown hot and cold this season and were beaten convincingly by Rajasthan Royals last night. MI can take a lot of positives into tomorrow's game against a rival which is placed one rung above because of a superior net run rate – both having 8 points from 9 games and occupying the sixth and seventh slots after yesterday's games. The return to form of struggling opener Parthiv Patel, who made his first half century of the season besides putting on a near-century stand with fellow-opener Lendl Simmons, bodes well for the home team. MI seem to have hit the right combination after the
loss of a few key players due to injury and no-show but will be a tired lot after travelling to Mohali. On the other hand, Daredevils, who had a poor game yesterday overall and fielded woefully, need to regroup quickly and take advantage of the travelweariness of MI. Both Delhi captain Jean-Paul Duminy and Angelo Mathews spoke about the need for consistency in their display. "Unfortunately when we win, the next game has not been good. We need to break that pattern. Consistency hasn't been there. If we start winning a couple of games in a row we can turn it around," said Mathews confidently ahead of MI's game. There's a question mark over the poor run of Yuvraj Singh who hit Royals' Dhawal Kulkarni for three silken-smooth boundaries in one over, before departing immediately afterwards. Duminy skirted the query while also backing the under-performing national discard. "It's just 15 minutes now after the game and all options are open. At the end of the day he's a match winner and I still believe he can come good and have to back him to do that," he said on Yuvraj.
BRILLIANT CSK ROUT RCB

hennai: A sensational bowling effort by Chennai Super Kings saw them defend a modest total as they crushed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 24 runs to regain their position at the top of the table in the Indian Premier League cricket tournament. Having posted a modest 148 for nine in 20 overs, CSK bowlers led by Ashish Nehra (3/19 in four overs) and Dwayne Bravo (2/19 in 3.4 overs) exhibited brilliant death over skills to bundle out RCB for 124 in 19.4 overs. Such was the dominance of CSK bowlers at the back end of the innings that RCB lost as many as seven wickets for 27 runs in only 5.5 overs. From a relatively comfortable 97 for three with another 52 runs to get, RCB's slump started when Bravo effected a superb reflex run-out off his own bowling to get rid of op-

"I will always admire and respect Tiger. He and his beautiful family will always hold a special place in my heart." Woods issued a similar statement on his website. "I have great admiration, respect and love for Lindsey and I'll always cherish our time together. She has been amazing with Sam and Charlie and my entire family," he said. Kohli had hit two fours and a six during his knock as he added 63 runs for the fourth wicket with Dinesh Karthik (23) after they were left at 34 for three. Once Kohli was gone, the procession started, with Karthik being snapped up in the deep off Nehra's bowling in the 15th over. In his very next over, the veteran seamer removed Safaraz Khan (8) and Harshal Patel (0) to take his wickets tally to 17 in the tournament. Bravo, on his part, bowled an exceptional 18th over with clever change ups and the off-cutters which led to Mitchell Starc playing four dot balls. On his part, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni read the pitch perfectly as he knew that it would slow down with passage of time and strokemaking would be extremely difficult in the second half. His intuition turned out to be
I could not sleep after my shot against MI, says Rahane
Mumbai: Left sleepless the last time he played a bad shot against Mumbai Indians, in-form Rajasthan Royals batsman Ajinkya Rahane he was desperate to set the record straight which helped him notch up the sublime 91-run knock in an IPL match here. "I was really hurt when I got out (for 16 to R Vinay Kumar) in the last game. I could not sleep that night and was all the time thinking about my shot and about the loss (by 7 wickets). I just wanted to make it count I knew I was batting really well. Once I was in after 6-7 overs, I was planning to bat for 20 overs," said Rahane after piloting the Royals to a match-winning score of 189 for 2. The Mumbai-born batsman, who has been in great form in international cricket (Tests as well as ODIs) for close to two years, struck 3 sixes and 9 fours in his 54-ball knock.
spot on as his bowlers vindicated his decision. Earlier, Mitchell Starc bowled brilliantly for his figures of 3/24 in four overs as RCB managed to restrict CSK to 148 for nine in stipulated 20 overs after Dhoni had decided on batting first. Starc was supported well by Harshal Patel (2/19) and David Wiese (2/29). Suresh Raina, CSK's most consistent player over eight seasons, again top-scored with a 46-ball-52 that had five sweetly-timed boundaries apart from a six. pressive of the RCB bowlers as he first yorked Dwayne Smith (0) off the very first over that went for a maiden. However, Brendon McCullum (20) was in his usual aggressive self as leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and seamer Wiese came in for some harsh treatment during that initial period. He raced to 20 but it was the pace of pitch that did him in as he tried to reach for a pull-shot and was caught at the mid-wicket boundary by Iqbal Abdullah off Wiese's bowling in the final over of the Powerplay. Raina, who hit some delightful cover drives, then conjured a 64-run partnership with Faf du Plessis (24) as the pair took the team's total near 100 before Harshal's double blow put paid to the hopes of a big total. First Du Plessis was played on and then off the last delivery, Raina was trapped plumb in-front trying to pull a length delivery.
OSIAN’S CC WINS GANNON DUNKERLEY TROPHY 2015 M 30
umbai: An emphatic turn of events saw Osian’s Cricket Club put up a strong come-back to win the Gannon Dunkerley Invitational Trophy 2015 overcoming PJ Hindu Gymkhana by 26 runs on Sunday at the Chereshwar Cricket Ground, Trombay. Osian’s CC who had lost their opening match of the tournament to PJ Hindu Gymkhana were constantly on the back foot narrowly winning their next two matches in order to qualify for the final. Hindu Gymkhana with three wins out of three in the tournament started as clear favorites in the final and after winning the toss decided to bowl first. The Chereshwar Cricket Ground was a new venue to both teams with no clear indication of how the wicket would play or what would be a good target. Osian’s CC made yet another change to their opening pair and lost their mainstay Ankit Zaveri cheaply. Big hitting Rachit Jogani found it difficult to push the scoring along as veteran Pratik Sheth nudged for the singles and twos. Osian’s CC were reeling at 30 for one in seven overs. Jogani was dismissed by a smart catch in the deep by Nishad Gabhawala but had managed to smash 17 runs of the previous over and bringing some normalcy to the Osian’s innings. Pratik continued the momentum and elegantly put away three fours and a six in consecutive overs before he was trapped leg-before to Adhvaryu’s quicker delivery. Osian’s CC once again in a spot of bother but then Vishal Shah single-handedly propelled the scoring with his brilliant 40 of 29 balls which saw just one six and one boundary but some brilliant running between the wickets which made all the difference.

Bava lived up to his reputation with an impressive 6-4, 7-5 triumph in a championship round that lasted 95 minutes and earned Rs. 32,500, while Anand received Rs. 22,500. Giant-killers Jayesh Pungliya and Armaan Bhatia, registered a hard-fought victory to clinch the doubles title. Pungliya and Bhatia, who shocked top seeds Anvit Bendre and Abdullah Shaikh in the quarter-finals and third seeds Kunal Anand and Saurav Sukul in the semi-finals, overcame Aryan Goveas and Rohan Samant 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) in an all-Maharashtra championship round. Playing Anand for the first time, Bava, a former top junior in Maharashtra, got off to a dream start when he raced to a 5-2 lead in the opening set with breaks in the fifth and seventh games. Though Anand, a double-crown winner here in 2011, broke back in the eighth and held serve to close in at 4-5, Bava held serve to take the set. Anand put behind the blemish to snatch a 3-1 lead with a break in the fourth game of the second set, but Bava broke right back in the next as both held serve until 5-all. Bava changed the script with a break in the 11th game and held serve for game, set and match when Anand hit a return into the net. “It was a tough match,” explained Bava. “Kunal played well but I managed to keep the ball in and waited for him to commit the mistakes.” Results (Final): Haadin Bava bt Kunal Anand (Del) 6-4, 7-5. hubaneswar: After a high-intense drawn match against Japan, India will now step-on the field with a single goal of wining their second match to put a strong hold in the four-Test Series here today. India displayed rusty defence yesterday during their 1-1 draw against Japan to begin its fourmatch Test series on a disappointing note and skipper Sardar Singh will hope his team puts up a better show today. Indian players will have to tackle Japan's long passes as well as contain them in their half to create maximum goal-scoring opportunities. In the penalty corner, India has a stronger side than the visitors and in the presence of specialists such as VR Raghunath, Birendra Lakra and skipper Sardar Singh, Indians have ability to convert maximum penalty corners in goals. Japan, on the other hand, could not materialise a single penalty corner yesterday and they found
difficult to surpass goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. Both India and Japan will have to tweak their strategies to outplay each other. While Indians will look to work on their defence side,

series-levelling five-wicket victory over England on the third day of the third and final Test. Set a daunting target of 192 after the tourists were dismissed for 123 in their second innings, a 108-run fifth-wicket partnership between Darren Bravo and Jermaine Blackwood tilted the match decisively the Caribbean side's way yesterday. That allowed them to celebrate their first victory over England since the opening match of the 2009 series in Kingston, Jamaica. Bravo's controlled knock of 82, his 11th Test half-century, ended when he attempted to make the victory hit off Ben Stokes as Stuart Broad pulled down the catch at mid-off. It was left to Blackwood to finish off the match in the next over, hoisting Moeen Ali's off-spin over longon to finish unbeaten on 47 and complete a team and personal triumph following his first innings top score of 85 out of a total of 189. He was named man of the match. "I always try to play my natural game but you have to be mindful of the situation as well," said Blackwood. In the men's 400m race, Incheon Asiad bronze medalist Rajiv Arokia made the cut with a time of 46.24 secs. Odisha sprinter Srabani Nanda, who underwent brief training stints in Australia and

In 100m, Nanda's state-mate Dutee Chand bagged the silver in 24.52s ahead of host state's M G Padmini (24.69s). Dutee is the reigning Asian junior champion in this event with a personal best of 23.57 secs to her credit. Haryana's Dharambir, who won a sprint
double in the National Games earlier this year, had a disappointing outing in the 100m heats on the opening day due to a slippery starting block. However, Dharambir managed to come back with a triumph in 200m and qualified for the Wuhan squad with a personal best timing of 20.87 secs. Defending champion Manikanda Arumugam of Tamil Nadu settled with a silver in 21.20 secs.

ew Delhi: Jharkhand Olympic Association has joined Hockey India and Bowling Federation of India in demanding a No Confidence Motion against incumbent IOA president N Ramachandran by calling a Special General Body Meeting. Acting General Secretary of JOA, Shivendra Dubey has written a letter to IOA informing that his association wants a No Confidence Motion being taken up against Ramachandran. "In view of present working style of Mr N Ramachandran (IOA President), the Jharkhand Olympic Association demands a No Confidence Motion against him," Dubey said in the letter. JOA's letter came a few days after Hockey India and Bowling Federation of India shot off letters to the IOA to move a No Confidence Motion against Ramachandran and to call a Special GBM to vote on the issue. There are also indications that Tripura Olympic Association could join these National Sports Federations and state Olympic associations in demanding a No Confidence Motion against Ramachandran. But when contacted Tripura Olympic Association Secretary General Rupak Debroy said that his association is yet to make an official demand on the issue. "We have not sent an official letter yet in that regard," Debroy told PTI when asked if his association has sent a letter demanding a No Confidence Motion against Ramachandran. According to the IOA constitution, a No Confidence Motion against the president, secretary general, treasurer and other executive council members can be passed if two-third majority of the members are present and voting. The quorum for such a meeting will have to be three-fourths of the total strength of the IOA General Body entitled to vote. The IOA General Body has 183 votes in total -- three each for NSFs and two each for state Olympic bodies. The infighting among the top brass of the IOA, which cameout of a 14-month suspension only last year, got exposed just days after International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach's first visit to the country after taking over as IOC chief in 2013. In his one-day whirlwind visit on April 27, Bach had called for unity among the IOA members so that they can work together for the betterment of Indian sports and sportspersons.
