he massive controversy surrounding Maggi instant noodles forced Nestle's global CEO to come out in open and declare his famous product safe for human consumption on Friday morning. By evening, there was little reprieve for the troubled multi-national company and its famous noodles brand. Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that lead

content in Maggi noodles was found within permissible limits in samples collected from Mumbai and Pune. Nilesh Gandhi, assistant commissioner, FDA, said nine samples of Maggi noodles were received for testing. The samples were found to contain .1 to 1.4 ppm lead, while the permissible level is 2.5 ppm. Reliance stops sale of instant noodles

Reliance Retail has decided to temporarily withdraw all brands of instant noodles from its retail stores across India following the Maggi controversy. Sources in the company said the step of going beyond a piecemeal approach of being selective in removing just some selected brands (Nestle's Maggi) was based on the well being of customers, while also looking at the interests of the 11 partners of the company whose noodles are stocked in its stores. "We believe that the uncertainty is unwarranted and undeserved. But it merits the launch of a robust, nationwide process of reassuring ourselves and serve our valued stakeholders," said Damodar Mall, Reliance Retail's chief executive of value formats in consumer business. got reports from every state now and have come to the conclusion that Maggi products should be recalled from the market," Nadda told reporters. The central food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ordered recall of all nine approved variants of Maggi instant noodles from the market, terming them "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption. The FSSAI also said Nestle launched 'Maggi Oats Masala Noodles' without approval and ordered its recall, saying the company did not undertake risk and safety assessment for the product. Nestle moves Uttarakhand High Court Nestle India has approached the Uttarakahand High Court against the state government's 3-month ban on Maggi. The court has accepted the company's appeal and asked the state government to file a reply within 15 days.

Emergency gate for access to Bhabha Hospital from Kurla station demanded By Rameeza Shaikh

R

ailway Citizens Committee President, Subhash Raut yesterday demanded that Bhabha Hospital should make an emergency gate at its premises near Kurla station. Raut said that the hospital shares a wall with Kurla station on the Harbour line platform. As a member of DRUCC (Divisional Railway Users Consultation Committee), Raut has proposed the idea of demolishing the wall so that an 'Emergency Gate' can be made which will help in taking the

railway accident victims to hospital at the earliest. The committee members are also communicating with the BMC for the cause. Raut further said, “The victims can be taken to Bhabha Hospital instead of creating a separate medical room.” Meanwhile, when the doctors working at Bhabha hospital were contacted to ask about their demands for the betterment of the hospital, regarding security or technologies like for CT-Scan, they did not give a specific reply. The BMC run hospital was almost evacuated and is currently

under construction. The BMC had issued a notice saying that the hospital building is dangerous. According to the notice, the patients have been transferred to other hospitals, viz. Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar East; Sant Muktabai Municipal Hospital, Barve Marg, Ghatkopar West and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Shatabdi Hospital, Govandi. The notice further says that the emergency unit of the hospital is working 24/7 and the General OPD will be working from 8:30 am. to 12:30 pm, while the hospital is under construction.

he Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that the rains in Karnataka will determine when the monsoon season will begin in Mumbai. The IMD had also confirmed pre-monsoon rains in Dadar and Parel. V K Rajeev, IMD Director at Mumbai said that while it rained in Kerala, only rains in Karnataka will

determine the city's monsoon season. “While it rained in Kerala on Friday, only rains in the next 48 hours in Karnataka will determine when the monsoon season will begin in Mumbai. Till then we cannot predict about the exact date of the monsoon season in the city,” said Rajeev. Rajeev also confirmed about the pre-monsoon rains in the city. “Yes there was slight rainfall at Dadar and Parel on Friday morning. These

are pre-monsoon rains and we will be observing the situation in Mumbai,” he said. The IMD had recorded high humidity in the city on Friday. In Colaba, the maximum temperature recorded was 33.4ºC while the minimum temperature was 27ºC. In Santacruz, maximum temperature recorded was 35.3ºC while minimum temperature was 27.3ºC. World Environment Day celebrated in right spirit By Kinjal Shah

W

orld Environment Day is celebrated as an annual event on 5th of June since 1973. People of all age groups actively take part in the celebration. Children too participate in large numbers in activities such as clean up campaigns, motivating people to plant trees, recycling garbage, community events, posters and lot more. Shree Kutchi Visa Oswal Jain Mahajan organisation, yesterday, held celebrations with an aim to raise

awareness about the importance of a green and healthy environment in human lives. The organisation planted saplings along Dr. Ambedkar Road and 5 Gardens in Matunga, early in the day. Later, the organisation along with children, held a rally in the Fort area. The children were seen with posters and placards related to environmental issues. One of the organisation members, Nilesh Shah, said, “Our main concern is the increasing Global Warming, we wish to have a safer environment for all generations.”

eeping in mind the city's monsoon which is round the corner, the traffic police has made adequate preparation to tackle the traffic problems which usually crop up in different parts of the metropolis. During the rains, traffic cops face major problems like potholes, breakdown of vehicles, water logging, etc, but compared to last year this time the traffic department will deploy extra manpower on the roads with necessary equipments and cranes. Talking to ADC, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Milind Bharambhe said, '”As per my knowledge, the Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to station one truck at every 5 km distance on the Eastern and Western Express highways, loaded with materials which will be used to fill potholes which occur during heavy rains and it is a good step,

but this should be done all over Mumbai to make traffic flow smoothly.” Motorists who face breakdown of their vehicles during the rains need not worry now as we will be keeping cranes ready to assist them to tow their vehicles to the nearest garage, Bharambhe added. “In areas where major water logging occurs – like Hindmata, Lower Parel, Milan Subway, etc. – we have already made alternative roads for motorists. We are already in talks with the BMC and we have demanded that since the PWD is going keep one truck at every 5 km distance, every ward in the BMC should lend a hand to enable us to keep the flow of traffic smooth,” Bharambhe added. Another officer said, our Mumbai Traffic Police helpline number and many other numbers are mentioned in our website; motorists should keep these numbers which will help them when there is an emergency. n an interesting case of alleged malpractice in getting approval for developing a building, the members of the Standing Committee in BMC has raised eyebrows over the complete development of a building Prem Bhavan, in Phophawadi lane no. 1 at Kalbadevi, which was reportedly given permission only for repairs and not to undertake any redevelopment work. The matter came to light on Friday in the Standing Committee even the civic body's attention is towards the investigation into the Kalbadevi fire that resulted in the death of four fire officers of Mumbai Fire Brigade.

On Friday, the members of the BMC Standing Committee headed by Chairman Yashodar Phanse, carried out an inspection at Prem Bhavan, Phophawadi lane no. 1 along with other members of the committee including Samajwadi Party leader Rais Shaikh, Shiv Sena corporator Hemangi Worlikar and BJP Corporator Manoj Kotak. Sangeeta Hasnale – Assistant Commissioner of C-ward was also present. Earlier, the Standing Committee had approved a request from the residents of the building who had sought for structure to be repaired. However, when the Standing Committee visited the spot on Friday, they were shocked to see that the building was covered in sheets, appearing

to have been repaired. Describing the scene, Shaikh said, “Approval had been passed for only 50 percent repairs of the building. However, when we entered, we saw that almost entire new building was built. It seemed to us that the building had been demolished completely and rebuilt.” According to Shaikh, they saw that there were six floors in the building and on further inquiry, they found that there were not more than 14 tenants in the building. He elaborated, “Of the 14 tenants, not more than 2-3 floors are required. When we asked about the old plan of the building and who gave approval for the new plan, the assistant commissioner got uncomfortable and gave an

unclear answer. I have now sincerely suggested that the Assistant Engineer (Building and Factories) as well as the Assistant Commissioner of Cward and others are supervising this project should be questioned thoroughly on this.” He further added, “Things have happened on the contrary to what was permitted. An MRTP proposal was also put forward but nobody knows what happened to that. Hasnale, in her defence, has blamed members from the authority.” Phanse has asked to probe intensively into the matter and demanded a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) on the situation in the Standing Committee meeting which will be held next week.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, who inaugurated the facility said, “Mumbai will not require to borrow electricity from anywhere, we are working on a project wherein wind power will be generated from water and be supplied to the city.” Gadkari, speaking further

about the plans for Mumbai said, “I will be visiting Japan next month wherein hydro power and wind power is created and we have spoken to the companies and plan to implement the creation of wind power in the waters in Mumbai. The government will also soon start to take steps in order to ensure that the polluted pipe water of the corporation which is dumped in the sea will be recycled and converted into power, more than 2,000 BEST buses can work on the bio-CNG in Mumbai.” Pointing out that poverty which leads to unemployment and pollution is one of the major hindrances in the country. “The government

has decided that over 11 lakh km of highways in Maharashtra will have trees planted on both the sides by the children of the farmers residing in rural Maharashtra, this will not only create employment but also help in saving the environment,” Gadkari added.

Hospital for MbPT employees Nitin Gadkari has announced that a hospital will be built for the MbPT employees, “A 17-acre land has been allotted for the construction of an hospital in Wadala, which will be equipped with all modern day facilities for employees of MbPT.”

he rescue of 15 women from a ladies bar in Kashimira, has yet again exposed the nefarious activities of some bar owners who are operating prostitution dens under the garb of live orchestra shows. In a joint operation, a team from the Anti-Human Trafficking unit and the Local Crime Branch of the Thane (rural) police along with their Kashimira police station counterparts busted a sex racket operating

from a ladies orchestra bar in Kashimira, late on Thursday night. Following a tip-off that KNight Bar used Live Orchestra Band as a front for operating a prostitution racket, a decoy customer was sent to the establishment. After confirming information of the "pick-up" service by striking a deal with the hotel-staffers to spend a night with bar girls at a nearby lodge, a police team led by API Sachin Gavas, swooped down on the bar at about 11:30 pm.

was immediately taken into custody and in the process of investigation we came to know that this was a gang that has been operating with such modus operandi. An FIR was registered under Sections 379 and 34 of IPC. This is a gang of about 7 people and have children too who helped them in the crime. They will be arrested soon," the officer concluded.

n activist has sent a legal notice to actor and director of popular television show 'Satyamev Jayate', Aamir Khan, for using the emblem of the country as the title of the programme allegedly without the Central government's permission. The name 'Satyamev Jayate' is a part of the national emblem, Manoranjan Roy, the activist, told PTI. The notice, sent by advocate Manoj Singh on Roy's behalf, demands that producers of the show furnish a copy of government permission. "Otherwise our client has given us peremptory instructions to initiate legal proceedings against you," it says. The notice's recipients are Aamir Khan, his wife Kiran Rao (both producers) and the show's director Satyajit Bhatkal. The title 'Satyamev Jayate' is a part of the State Emblem which cannot be used without permission as per State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act 2009, it says. No authority has the right to register or grant patent which contains the State Emblem or its part, the notice says, adding that "it cannot be used to get monetary benefit or for the purpose of advertisement."

While Sunil Jairam Gowda (27), the steward who doubled-up as a pimp has been held, 15 girls were rescued and sent to a Rehabilitation Centre in Ulhasnagar. However, the bar operator and some staffers of Panchratna Lodge who are said to be a part of the sex racket managed to evade the police dragnet. A case under the relevant sections of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, has been registered against Gowda and the absconding accused. Further investigation is on.

he confusion over the conversion from 1,500-V DC to 25,000-V AC by the Central Railway (CR) has led to passengers struggling on Friday as the CR's trial of the AC-DC conversion resulted in trains being delayed for more than an hour in the early morning hours. However, the Central Railway's officials have claimed that they have planned the conversion of electric traction between Thane and CST on today midnight and tomorrow and based on it a midnight block will be held by CR between 12 am to 6 am on June 6 and 7. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has identified nine spots which includes via duct Rail Over Bridge (ROB) near CST and Byculla, Old Pipeline at Sandhurst, Hancock ROB between Masjid and Curry Road, Tram ROB at Byculla, Garden ROB, Matunga Workshop ROB, Kasaiwada, Curry Road and Tilak ROB, between CST to Kurla where the trains would be operated at the speed of 15 kmph. However a Central Railway employee informed the ADC, that the restriction of the speed limit on the 4 spots, i.e. on Pipeline at Sandhurst,

Garden ROB, Curry Road and Tilak ROB have been sorted. “There was a speed restriction limit but it is resolved and now as the Siemens rakes can take the speed of 30 kmph, he said. Chetan Bakshi, the Commissioner of Railway Safety said, “The application has not come to me about the date on which the conversion would take place and all the speed restrictions for the Siemens rake at all nine spots between Kurla and CST is mandatory. Bakshi said, “If any development on trial run at restricted speed is done by the CR, the officials will have to send the application to me and so far, I have not received any communication from the CR authorities. Thus, for the Siemens rakes, at all the nine spots, the sanctioned permission for speed would be 15 kmph. "On the slow tracks (both up and down), rakes are given 85 kmph maximum permissible speed as the OHE has steep gradient. The Mumbai division of the Railways has not maintained the manual law. On the fast lines, the rakes can maintain the speed of 90 kmph," said Bakshi. aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

ndia Ratings and Research (IndRa) on Friday maintained a negative outlook on domestic gold prices for FY 2015-16 and said rates are likely to decline to touch Rs 20,500 per 10 grams in India from the current levels if the US Federal Reserve effects a rate hike. "The agency believes movements in gold prices will largely depend on the US interest rate decision. In the event of a US rate hike, global gold prices could drop and range between US $900 an ounce to $1,050 an ounce. As such, the domestic price of gold may decline and range between Rs 20,500-24,000 per 10 grams from the current levels of Rs27,000," IndRa told PTI. The rating agency expects a higher rate hike to cause gold price to fall by 10-25 per cent. However, it said, if the US continues to delay the interest rate hike, while major economies such as Japan and the eurozone continue with their unconventional monetary policy (UMP), the price of gold could creep up and range from $1,3001,350 an ounce in FY16. Correspondingly, domestic prices could also increase from current levels and trade in the range of Rs

Gold is often considered a hedge against an economic uncertainty and is best reflected in central banks across the world remaining the netbuyers of gold. The data available till end-December 2014 suggests that central banks were the net buyers of gold from 2008-2014. Till such time the uncertainty around global growth is reduced, the chances of international gold prices falling below $900 an ounce corresponding to pre-2009 levels are remote, it opined. The overall global gold demand during the next 12-18 months is likely to exhibit a low single digit growth rate. 327 hilly areas in Mumbai classified as dangerous, says RTI activist A

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice is hereby given that Share Certificate No. 1 of Ameya Co-op. Housing Society Ltd., Sector-1, Plot no. 109, Charkop, Kandivali (West), Mumbai- 400 067, standing in the name of Late. The society hereby invites claims or objections (in writing) for issuance of duplicate share certificate within the period of 10 days from the publication of this notice. If no claims/ objections are received during this period, the society shall be free to issue duplicate share certificate. Applicant Mr. Avadhoot Ashok Pandit

bout 327 hilly areas in Mumbai spread across 25 constituencies, accommodating almost over a lakh people, have been identified as dangerous and are vulnerable to landslides, a citybased RTI activist claimed on Friday. "As per information received through RTI, there are 327 hilly areas classified as dangerous spread across 25 constituencies. Of the 22,483 huts in these areas, the authorities recommended shifting 9,657 huts on a priority basis," RTI activist Anil Galgali said. "The remaining huts were proposed to be protected by constructing retaining walls around the hills," Galgali said. Galgali has also alerted the Maharashtra government about the 327 hilly areas which are vulnerable to landslides owing to the expected monsoon shortly. In Galgali's email sent to the Chief

Minister, the chief secretary and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, he said that through his RTI queries about resettlement, he found out that across 25 assembly constituencies of the city's western as well as eastern suburbs, there are 22,483 hutments in 327 hilly areas, which are located precariously and need to be shifted urgently. Last year, it was revealed through an RTI query, that almost 260 people lost their lives, while more than 270 people were injured in landslides between 1992 and 2013, he told PTI. In wake of these incidents, Galgali has demanded that the government ought to act in order to safeguard the lives of those living in hilly areas. "Instead of spending crores of rupees to construct retaining hills, I think that the Maharashtra government should

shift these slumdwellers to 15,000 vacant Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and BMC tenements across the city," Galgali said in his letter. "Deaths of those residing in hilly areas could have been prevented, had their hutments been shifted, as it was recommended by the Mumbai Slum Improvement Board which had carried out a comprehensive survey in 2010," Galgali told PTI. "Acting on the Board's report, on 19 September 2011, the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had ordered preparation of an action plan. However, 34 months have passed since then but the Urban Development Department is yet implement it, neither had it prepared any Action Taking Plan (ATP) as Chief Minister Chavan had ordered," Galgali said.

Esplanade Mansion residents not to be evicted, HC to MHADA I

n a relief to tenants of century-old heritage building 'Esplanade Mansion' in South Mumbai that has been declared dilapidated, the Bombay High Court has directed Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) not to go ahead with the eviction, reports PTI. A division bench of justices R K Deshpande and V L Achliya, however, observed that if the occupants wish to continue occupying the building then it shall be at their own risk and the authorities shall not be held responsible if any untoward incident occurs. The high court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ashok Sarogi challenging the eviction notice issued by

MHADA Repair Board on June 1 directing the tenants to evict as the building is dilapidated and dangerous. According to the petition, the owners are interested in re-developing the heritage building. "For the purpose of redevelopment, the owners are required to accommodate the existing tenants in the newlyconstructed building but the owners are not ready to do this. The building is in a reparable condition. "In the past also eviction notices have been issued and the tenants have been protected by the court. Ban on an unhealthy product I

MMEDIATELY after laboratory tests proved that Maggi contained MSG and lead which are dangerous to health, Nestle should have withdrawn the product. It did not do so. Then state after state imposed ban on Maggi and even then, Nestle showed no inclination to recall its product. It had finally in a meeting with Government of India and perhaps it is at that meeting that it realised that the Centre would impose nationwide ban. Nestle’s global CEO Paul Bulcke held a press conference: He said that Maggi would be recalled. He however utilised the opportunity once again to declare that Maggi was safe. A few hours after the press conference by the Government of India that a nationwide ban would be imposed on Maggi. The largest sale of Maggi is in India. Consumer will not buy this product if Nestle starts production again. The CEO has said they will be back. Consumers’ trust has been shattered. Nestle’s product Maggi has been there for years and lakhs of people across the country have been consuming it. Maggi was consumed by children and parents thought they were giving something healthy to them. It is claimed Maggi is a health food and now the trust of all those consumers has been shattered. A pertinent point that arises is who has given clearance for the production of Maggi in the country.

IHAR cauldron is boiling much ahead of assembly elections scheduled this year as permutations and combinations of like-minded political parties are being worked out to win-over floating voters in the state. The recent spat between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Hindustani Awam Morcha chief Jitan Ram Manjhi has taken a new turn with later accusing Bihar chief minister of keeping a watch on him and using police to prohibit his family from plucking mango, litchi and jackfruit trees grown on official residence of the chief minister. Manjhi has yet to vacate the bungalow despite being thrown out of CM's office.

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015

This difference over projection of next chief minister has created atmosphere of uncertainty over merger as well as next alliance for coming assembly elections. The Janata Dal (United) is not very happy with Lalu Prasad Yadav's suggestion and would like to project Nitish Kumar as next chief minister since it will give the party an edge when it comes to distribution of tickets. The Congress has yet to find its base in the state where caste plays dominant role in deciding who should rule the state. Except for its traditional loyal supporters, the party has failed to gain any ground in the state being ruled by Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar for so long. In the changed circumstances, it is

Socio-political statement

Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav over strategies to be evolved for coming elections. The BJP now wants to win Bihar since it cannot afford to have another defeat at state level after stunning loss in Delhi assembly elections at the hands of Aam Adami Party chief Arvind Kejriwal. The party will have better chance of seizing power in Bihar if JD(U) and RJD fight against each other. The Janata Dal Parivar experiment has to be implemented on ground level for better political coordination. Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party who is in charge of giving final touches for new party is going slow as he does not want the experiment to be implemented half-heartedly. RJD hopes to swim on its own with Yadav-Muslim combination support if an alliance effort with the JD(U) fails.

This reminds one of a similar case where two constables hovering over Rajiv Gandhi's residence in Delhi had cost Chandra Shekhar his minority government in Delhi as the Congress withdrew support on the charges of spying on their boss. In Patna, Manjhi is not making some insignificant charges against Nitish Kumar but he is making socio-political statement to unite and consolidate his position among his caste based supporters for coming elections. Manjhi who wields considerable clout among Maha-Dalits in Bihar and adjoining states wants to take revenge on his one-time mentor, Nitish Kumar, for humiliating him by removing him from the chief minister's post. In symbolic terminology, he is saying that Nitish is not allowing his community to pluck fruits of power. Playing pun on word aam (mango) Nitish Kumar refutes charges saying no one had employed any police to prohibit ex-CM from plucking mangoes. "I am concerned about Awam (people) but he is worried about Aam (mangoes).” Nitish wonder and objects to over staying by Manjhi despite being ousted from office long back. Manjhi aware of strained relations between Nitish and Lalu Prasad Yadav of RJD, hits back saying Nitish did not object when Lalu Prasad overstayed even after loss of power. "I am being targeted by Nitish because I am Maha-Dalit," he says in a heavily loaded statement. At present, Nitish Kumar is more worried about fate of merger of socialist groups into mega party before the coming assembly elections to take on the BJP. RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav who is also keen on merger does not want to see his support base among Yadav community being depleted. His worry is that if Nitish Kumar is projected as a next chief minister, this may ultimately cost him his support base among Yadav community which is not happy with Nitish Kumar's tenure as a chief minister.

more worried about BJP getting an upper hand in the state which will ultimately help the NDA to improve its strength in Rajya Sabha. As a result the party is hoping that the Janata Dal (U) and Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance could be worked out before the state goes for assembly poll. The best scenario for the Congress is an alliance with united Janata Dal so that there is polarization of votes against the BJP using voter resentment against non-arrival of ‘Achhe Din’ promised before the last Lok Sabha elections by the BJP. JD (U) president Sharad Yadav is working for an alliance between JD(U) and RJD but finds it difficult due to RJD's opposition to projecting Nitish as next chief minister. There is a strong lobby within the JD (U) which feels that if there is no chance of an alliance with the RJD due to opposition to Nitish Kumar's leadership, then the party should try to work out an alliance with the Congress. While Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has better relations with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and would like to have grand alliance, Rahul does not appear to be very enthusiastic about roping in RJD. He would also prefer a direct alliance with Nitish Kumar and leave RJD to defend itself. The Congress is worried over recent flare up between supporters of

The BJP with its upper caste support intact wants to win over Manjhi and have a winning alliance with the support of Maha-Dalit communities which dominates rural parts of the state. With Lok Janshakti Party chief, Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, firmly in NDA camp, it will give an edge to the BJP's efforts to win over Bihar in case Janata Parivar fritters away unity efforts. There is also pressure building within the BJP to nominate a chief ministerial candidate before the election. However, the party high command is not yet ready to announce any one candidate as it may create problems for fine tuning its election strategy. The BJP may keep it open and let the voters first decide who should run Bihar and then decide on chief ministerial candidate if the party gets a chance to rule the politically sensitive Bihar. Every major player in Bihar is in flux and trying out different combinations to ensure better performance in the coming elections. Lalu Prasad Yadav who extended support to Nitish Kumar is now not sure and would like to go on his own. Nitish though skeptical about Congress has accepted the Congress support for his government and would not hesitate to have new alliance with the Congress if RJD is going on its own. These moves are based on political perceptions of these parties but one is not sure how the voters could see these moves and vote accordingly. Bihar is going to be next battle ground where these regional as well as national parties will put their best foot forward and know voters mood after Delhi assembly elections. Everybody is taking calculated risk to adjust to the new political environment in the country. There is an undercurrent of generational change in Bihar as well. The new leadership at various levels will emerge which will dominate Bihar politics in the coming years.

Blaming the poor actor...!

OW convenient! How ridiculously appropriate! A noodle company which has been around for as far as anyone can remember, is suddenly found to have high levels of lead and before you can say Jack Robinson or its Indian corresponding equivalent expression, the poor actor and actresses who advertised for those same noodles are blamed! And that in our country is how the blame game goes on, while the actual culprit which is the government gets away scot free! Look at the situation, logically: Why are these three actors, one the great Amitabh Bachchan and the others Priety Zinta and Madhuri Dixit being held responsible? Even as you ponder over this I’ll take you onto a highway, where cars, motor bikes and other traffic are zooming up and down. The roads have been tarred, traffic lanes marked, all so that vehicles can get the maximum out of the road: Speed! Suddenly a middle aged man darts across the road; there is no road crossing, no pedes-

trian lights, nothing, but he crosses: A car travelling at the mandatory speed hits him! The man dies! The driver of the car is hauled out, thrashed by the public. The police arrive, arrest him, take him to jail. Next day, newspapers talk about, ‘speeding car’ hitting poor pedestrian!

BOB’S BANTER Robert Clements Suddenly the fellow who should not have been crossing the road at that spot is made the innocent victim of a hostile run over! The driver, into a monster: Public anger rises and the police to assuage public feeling even slap other charges! Meanwhile who gets away?

The very authorities who should have been seeing the pedestrian should not have crossed the road at that spot! The government watches as the very driver to whom they have given the road to drive is arrested for driving on it. As a driver, I know that if a man is crossing a road at the wrong spot, you needn’t be a speeding car to hit him or her. And in the noodle case, the same is happening: What was the regulatory body for whom a certain part of our taxes go to, doing about checking the lead content of the noodles all these years? The three actors sponsored the product, thinking the government was doing its job of regulating as much as I drive my car at a given speed thinking the policeman is doing his job! That’s their duty, what your taxes are paying for, what our votes are supposed to guarantee! We need to ask the government for accountability, not you the driver, not poor Amitabh..! — bobsbanter@gmail.com

Aishwarya, not Priyanka to play Dalbir Kaur in Sarabjit biopic I

Actor Hrithik Roshan during IIFA Weekend 2015 at Pavilion Mall in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

t's common knowledge that Omung Kumar's upcoming project revolves around Sarabjit Kaur, an Indian farmer who ventured across the border into Pakistan and was mistaken for an Indian spy and his sister Dalbir Kaur who made it her life's mission to fight for her brother's release. Unfortunately, after being incarcerated for 23 years, he was eventually killed by inmates inside the prison itself. 'Mary Kom' director Omung Kumar has taken up the mega task to bring this story to life on the big screen. The film primarily revolves around Dalbir Kaur's fight for her brother, so naturally the hunt began for an actress who could do justice to this complex role. Initially there were whispers that Omung wanted his 'Mary Kom' star Priyanka Chopra to essay this role, but now seems like it's Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who has made the cut. According to sources, she has given the nod for playing this part. She is making her comeback this year with Sanjay Gupta's 'Jazbaa' and seems like she's in a mood to do some serious and challenging roles. Can she? Can't she? Looks like it's going to be a long wait!

Never worried about number game in Bollywood: Vidya N

ational Award-winning actres Vidya Balan is too much in love with herself to be bothered by the stiff competition from other leading ladies. Vidya, 37, who is revered as one of the most talented performers in the country, has failed to get the boxoffice ringing with the dismal performances of her last few releases, 'Ghanchakkar', 'Bobby Jasoos' and 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects'. At the same time, her contemporaries like Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone have been basking in the glory of the success of their respective films. But an unperturbed Vidya said she just strives to better herself with each project. "I don't see this as being at the top... I have never subscribed to this number and perception game. For me I like to be at the top of my game at all times which means I want to do things at the best of my ability. Sometimes my films do well and they don't do well but I will give it my all," Vidya told PTI in an interview here. "I am living in a world where it is all about me... I don't see anyone else in that world. I don't see it as these many people are at the top and what will happen tomorrow if I am not there at the top because I don't consider that (being at the top) I think all of us are living parellely," she said. With stellar performances in films like "Kahaani", and "The Dirty Picture", Vidya is often lauded as a propeller of the trend of women-oriented films. "Today, there is a lot of scope for female actors. Everyone tells me that this trend was started by me.. I feel if 0.01 per cent credit goes to me I am humbled. We are seeing women all around us taking charge of life and their stories are inspiring us, which is why people are writing strong wonderful scripts and actors are doing it," Vidya said. "The more successful these films are, the more money will get invested into these kinds of films. I think each one of us is contributing equally," she said. Known for openly praising her counterparts, Vidya did not miss to commend some of the recent performances she saw.

ollywood should know a bit about hypocrisy—the all-is-well attitude on the outside, while underneath is the misery, the bad marriages, the wheeling-dealing, affairs, heartbreak, vicious gossip; wives who endure humiliation because they have nowhere to go, or don’t want to give up the good life. Zoya Akhtar, an industry kid herself, transplants these stories on to a cruise ship populated by Delhi high society, that can win the hypocrisy sweepstakes any day. For the not-so-rich, there is vicarious thrill in being told that money and designer togs can’t buy happiness, and watching despair unfold on a luxury cruise and exotic locations. For the designer togs wearers crowding a South Mumbai multiplex, maybe there is some identification with the characters on screen. Rihanna dating soccer star Karim Benzema? L

OS ANGELES: R&B star Rihanna has sparked dating rumours after she was spotted having an early morning breakfast date with French soccer ace Karim Benzema. The celebrities enjoyed breakfast at 24-hour diner Coppelia at 5am local time, shortly after the 'Diamonds' hitmaker finished partying at nearby nightclub Griffin, but they avoided being photographed together by leaving separately, reported E!Online. Rihanna, 37, previously struck up a friendship with the Real Madrid striker over Twitter during the World Cup last year (14), when she sent her condolences to Benzema after France lost to Germany in the quarter finals, writing, "@Benzema I feel your pain right now!". To which he had replied, ""@rihanna No pain no gain, thanks for the support!". If Rihanna is dating Benzema, he won't be the first sportsman she has been linked to. She previously dated Los Angeles Dodgers baseball star Matt Kemp in 2010, following her split from Chris Brown.

People would call Chuck, my manager, and say, 'We can't hire her because she's not sexy,' because I always went around dressed like a bag lady. OS ANGELES: Comedian-turneddesigner Melissa McCarthy says she hopes to empower women with her designs. McCarthy's own clothing line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7, launches in August, reported People magazine. "I just don't believe in a uniform. I think if people have it and they love it, great, but I think people get into a rut and I've always been someone who gets a kick out of dressing," the 44-year-old actress said. McCarthy said her personal style depends on her mood on any given day. "I like vintage, I

can never pick one style. I like a little blouse that looks great with a pencil skirt but then the next day I can wear it with ripped jeans and boots. It's that chameleon-like style that she’s applying to her own designs. I'm trying to give women a closet that gives them some variety," she added.

RINAGAR: Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday appeared before passport authorities and declared himself as an Indian while completing formalities for travel documents but insisted that he did it out of 'compulsion'. "Geelani submitted his biometric data -- finger prints and iris scan -at the designated counter," an official of the Regional Passport Office here told PTI. A Hurriyat spokesman justified Geelani writing Indian in the nationality column saying "travelling on the Indian passport is a compulsion of every Kashmiri". "Geelani too is compelled to complete the formalities in this regard," he added. The issue of granting Geelani passport had sparked a political debate with ruling BJP opposing it saying that he should declare his nationality as Indian and apologise for his anti-national activities. However, its ally PDP had favoured it while former chief minister Omar Abdullah had said it was not an issue as Geelani had been given passport in the past too.

DOMINOES 363

17

A normal set of dominoes — that is, one instance of every (unordered) pair of numbers from 0 to 6 — has been arranged irregularly into a rectangle; then the number in each square has been writen down and the dominoes themselves removed. Your task is to reconstruct the pattern by arranging the set of dominoes to match the provided array of numbers. Please note that each domino is a unique one and occurs only once in each puzzle.

SMILE AWHILE CODE WORDS 246

In each puzzle every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number; the same number represents the same letter throughout the puzzle. To start you off, we give you three letters and the numbers which have replaced them. When you’ve filled in these letters throughout the puzzle you’ll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. To help you keep track, as you find a letter, slot it into the grid provided and cross it off the list. To help you keep track, as you find a letter, slot it into the grid provided and cross it off the list.

A young woman was taking golf lessons and had just started playing her first round of golf when she suffered a bee sting. Her pain was so intense that she decided to return to the clubhouse for medical assistance. The golf pro saw her heading back and said, “You are back early, what’s wrong?” “I was stung by a bee!” she said. “Where?” he asked. “Between the first and second hole.” she replied. He nodded and said, “Your stance is far too wide.”

One day, a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in stunningly sexy lingerie. "Tie me up," she purred, "And you can do anything you want." So he tied her up and went golfing. Bob goes to see his friend Pete. He finds Pete in his barn dancing naked around his John Deere. "What are you doing!" asks Bob. Pete stops dancing & says, "My wife has been ignoring me lately so I talked to my psychiatrist and he said I needed to do some thing sexy to a tractor." [to attract her]

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

China's Chen Long returns the shuttlecock to India's Parupalli Kashyap during their men singles quarter final match at the Indonesia Open badminton tournament at Istora Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday.

J

AKARTA: On a bitter-sweet day for India, Parupalli Kashyap rallied to shock World No. 1 Chen Long to enter the men's singles semifinals even as Saina Nehwal bowed out with a quarterfinal loss to familiar foe Wang Shixian in the Indonesian Open Super Series badminton tournament here today. Kashyap, ranked 12th in the world, came from behind to beat the top seed Chinese 1421 21-17 21-14 in a contest that lasted an hour and three minutes. He will take on third-seeded Dane Jan O Jorgensen."Big win today ! Thru to semis now. Keep supporting," Kahsyap tweeted. However, Saina, who has won this tournament thrice in her career, went down 21-16 12-21 18-21 to old foe Wang

Shixian of China in a 69minute battle. This was the 13th face-off between the two and Wang has a 7-6 overall lead now. Kashyap was the first to take the court today and refused to be intimidated by the prospect of facing upto the world number one. The Commonwealth goldmedallist Indian was consistent with his smashes and impeccable with his net play against his more fancied opponent. Coming into this match, Long had a 7-1 headto-head record against Kashyap. The numero uno shuttler over the last two years has emerged as China's successor to the incomparable Lin Dan. Incidentally, Kashyap's last victory against Long came in

this very tournament in 2012. In what was a classic David vs Goliath battle, Kashyap used all his resources to overcome his rival. One of the fastest movers and hardest hitters in the world, Long failed to counter Kashyap's odd, precise smashes and started committing unforced errors. In the opening game, Kashyap was hardly a match to Long, who not only opened up a 6-2 lead but consistently moved ahead. Kashyap caught up with him on a couple of occasions but once the Chinese broke away from a tied 11-11 position to 16-11, there was no looking back for him. Long comfortably sealed the first game 21-14. The second game went

Denied US visa, AAI withdraws archers from World Youth C’ship N

EW DELHI: Livid after 21 members of its 31strong team were denied US visas, the Archery Association of India (AAI) today decided to withdraw from the World Youth Archery Championships in that country as a mark of protest.Apart from the archers, India's well-travelled Korean coach Chae Wom Lim was also refused visa by the US embassy here for the championship in Yankton, South Dakota. "We have decided to withdraw the team from this tournament as a mark of protest. This was decided by AAI President Vijay Kumar Malhotra even though we had reapplied for visas," Archery Association of India treasurer Virender Sachdeva told PTI.The Indian contingent, comprising Under-20 boys and girls, was scheduled to leave for the US to-

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

morrow for the June 8-14 event. But the US embassy here granted visa to only seven archers, two coaches and a Sports Authority of India official while rejecting 21, thereby putting serious doubts over India's participation in the event. Besides Lim, three Indian coaches Mim Bahadur Gurung, Chandra Shekhar Laguri, Ram Awdesh and masseuse Pinki were also denied visa. Sachdeva said the denial was on the ground that the visa officer was not satisfied with the interview of the rejected individuals and doubted that they may not return after the completion of the event. "It is really a shocking incident. Most of the archers are from lower strata and hail from states like Assam, Jharkhand, Punjab and Uttar

Pradesh. Most of them are not well versed in english and hence lack in communication. When the visa officer asked them what they do for living, they simply said we are archers and play archery," Sachdeva said."This might have raised doubts in the minds of the visa officer, resulting in refusal of visa. But I don't understand why Lim was denied because he is a known figure in world archery and has travelled worldwide," he added.Sachdeva said what was more shocking was that the visas were denied despite having the Government of India's sanction order and invitation from the US Archery Association. He said the AAI approached the Ministry of External Affairs and the Sports Ministry on this issue but to no avail.

neck-and-neck till 7-7 before the Indian managed to take a slight lead and hold on to the advantage, always keeping his nose ahead. Even though the experienced Chinese kept breathing down his neck, Kashyap wriggled out of some tricky situations to take the game to the decider. In the third game, Kashyap broke away from tied 2-2 to take a 9-3 lead, even as Long committed too many unforced errors, hitting wide and long to hand over a massive 14-5 lead to the Indian. In the end, it was a cakewalk for Kashyap, who made full use of his chances to sail through. Saina snatched the momentum quite early as she raced to a 11-5 lead and built on it quite aggressively to clinch the opening game in 30 minutes. But the experienced Wang roared back in the second game to draw level and make the battle interesting. Saina had the initial edge in the decider, grabbing a 6-3 lead but Wang did not allow her to run away with it by making it 6-6. A see-saw battle followed and the two players were locked 8-8 before Saina nosed ahead with a 1510 lead. However, Wang fought back yet again to draw level at 15-15 and 17-17. The Chinese star took the lead from there on and held her nerves to outwit the Indian, who has triumphed here in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

FIFA scandal steals focus as Women’s World Cup set to kick off

VANCOUVER: The biggest Women's World Cup in history kicks off on Saturday amid a backdrop of damaging FIFA corruption allegations that are threatening to overshadow the four-week tournament in Canada. The growing popularity of the sport has seen its expansion to 24 teams from 16, and nearly one million tickets have been sold for games in host cities -Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton.
