Sahar police solve unique muder case, arrest three women – the mother, her aunt and grandmother By Zuber Ansari

T

he Sahar Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the murder case of a seven-day-old girl executed with a unique modus operandi by arresting three women including the mother of the baby. The case was solved with the help of a medical receipt which was found inside the plastic bag in which the baby's body was wrapped. The bag was provided by the medical store of a hospital in Sion. The Sahar police said that three women – the baby's mother, aunt and grandmother killed the new-born and threw the body into the nullah in Sahar area, Andheri (E). The accused have been

identified as Bhagyashree Suresh Mandavkar (22) – the mother, Archana (20) – aunt and their mother Suchita (47) – the baby's grandmother. The trio live in Sakinaka's Chandivali area and all the three work as maids.

According to the police, the incident came to light after locals noticed the dead body of a new-born baby floating in the nullah at Ruby Koch Road near Sahar International Airport. They immediately informed the police. The police, with the help of fire brigade officers, recovered the body. “The body was wrapped in a plastic bag. There was a handkerchief around the baby's neck and injury marks were found on her head and left eye. It appears that she was strangulated to death and later thrown in the nullah,” said Ravindra Patil, senior inspector at Sahar police station. “During the panchnama, we found a medical bill of LMT College and Hospital Continued on pg 8 «

‘Modi is PM of India or Gujarat?’ Asks Raj Thackeray, also claiming that the Marathi manoos will side-track other parties and support MNS By Yatin Ingle

M

aharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray has already begun his campaigning for the state Assembly elections, now targetting his opponents. After stating that that he is not ready for any alliance with the Shiv Sena, he spoke

against the NCP, Congress and the BJP. Thackeray on Sunday began his speech with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, “Modi is the PM of India or Gujarat? Across the state, all the banners are carrying the picture of Modi, then what about the leaders of Maharashtra?”

He also attacked the NCPCongress saying, “They were unable to secure the city and state which suffered terror attacks and bomb blasts. We have the world's second best police, but if the state government is unable to handle and guide them correctly, what will they do? The police have been doing their duties correctly, and the state government has failed to supervise them.” Thackeray ended his speech stating that the citizens of Maharashtra will be side-tracking all the other parties and will put their trust in the MNS.

From desi dressage it was time for some French fare as fashion house Elle presented its Parisians' Lifestyle show. There were four sequences: Give Me Blue! denim wear range, Dark Fantasy vintage-inspired en-

sembles, After Hours party wear, and Black & White highighting trendy, chic and psychedelic checks and prints. While the denim line flaunted studs, rhinestones, lurex embroidery and motto jeggings, the deep vintage canvas played out handpainted florals in ivy greens and clementine inspired by old master paintings. The dresses, on the other hand, were a fresh interpretation of what the brand is synonymous with - flirty, feminine silhouettes, chic sheer fabrics and sophisticated sequin and lace art. And doing justice to the finale was the unapologetic wild play with minimalistic yet high contrast colours brought alive in couture houdstooth jackets, opulent herringbone skirts and bodycon dresses. And the stunning showstopper was model turned Bollywood actor Diana Penty.

Senators skip informal meet with VC Senate members of the University skip the informal meet before the annual senate meet as a protest against the VC's inaction over previous issues raised by senate members By Yatin Ingle

hile the annual senate meet of the Mumbai University is scheduled next week, the senators skipped the informal meet with the Vice-Chancellor held on Saturday to discuss the agenda of the meeting. For the first time in the history of the MU, the senators were absent for this discussion which affects the annual senate meeting. The senate members have stated that Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar has not solved their issues discussed in the last senate meeting.

They claimed that unless the VC resolves their issues from the last senate meet, they would not attend the annual senate meet. Senators have also said that this being the last year of the VC's term, he is avoiding the students' issues. Every six months, the MU conducts its annual senate meet, in which the issues of students are flashed and the VC declares the solutions for each one of them, raised by the senate members. Along with the topics related to students, the infrastructure as well as the prospective plans of the University are also discussed with the budget

plans. In order to discuss the agenda of the senate meet, every year, the senate members have an informal meeting with the VC. On Saturday, this informal meeting was scheduled which was skipped by the senate members. Pradeep Sawant, senate member, under-graduate constituency, MU, said, “The VC is yet to solve the problems of the students which we had flashed in the last senate meeting held in March; yet he has not worked on it. Until the issues from the past are not sorted out, there is no point in discussing further problems. The VC is avoiding his duties

and if he ignores the students' issues further, we shall also skip the annual senate meeting.” According to MU officials, the annual senate meeting is scheduled for October 16. Last year, the MU for the first time had suspended the senate members from the senate meeting for protesting inside the convocation hall during the senate meet. After the senate members protested against the MU, the suspension was called off by the VC. The ADC tried to contact Dr Rajan Welukar, but he was not available for comment.

Foods are commonly dyed black using squid ink in many parts of the world. For instance, it’s common to see both bread and pastas dyed black when accompanying seafood. Move sparked by inability of state leaders to put up credible candidates in some constituencies By Prashant Hamine

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah have taken full charge of the entire election management of the party's state unit. In a clear snub to the state leadership, Modi while addressing a election rally in Beed yesterday remarked that had late BJP leader Gopinath Munde been alive today he would have been forced to come to the state for election campaigning. Moreover, Modi has now laid down the diktat by announcing that he would not name Shiv Sena in his election speeches out of respect for late Sena chief Bal Thackeray. A terse advice to the state leaders to restrain themselves who otherwise were busy exchanging verbal volleys with Sena leaders. Speaking to ADC yesterday on condition of anonymity a senior party leader disclosed

that the party has deliberately chosen to ignore the caustic remarks of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and other Sena leaders as they do not want the campaigning to denigrate into a slanging match between the Sena and the BJP. The leader argued that their sole aim at present was to target the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party and not to deviate from its aim. Another purpose of keeping mum against the Sena diatribe is to frustrate its former ally provoking it even further, thereby exposing it, finally. The move by the two came following the goof-ups committed by the state and Mumbai leaders during the nomination process which ended on September 27. Both, Modi and Shah were

visibly upset over the inability of the state leaders to put up credible candidates in some of the assembly constituencies. The party is now forced to adopt or extend support to Independent candidates where it could not field any official candidate. Sources disclosed that Shah has been virtually camping in Mumbai for most of the time, paying minute attention to election management, holding rallies and booth level management. Sources added that it is Shah who laid it down to the faction leaders in the state that the campaigning will be led by state party president Devendra Fadnavis and the Mumbai scenario will be handled by Mumbai unit president Ashish Shelar. In short, barring Fadnavis and Pankaja Munde-Palwe the rest of the state leaders have virtually been put on notice. Sources disclosed that a through overhaul of the state party unit is expected after the polls.

Profitable elections for the vada pav-walla By A Staff Reporter

T

he upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections has affected almost all commercial activity in the state. Same is the case with the sale of the state's most famous snack, the vada-pav, which has soared after the campagining started. Treating workers with food is an old election tradition, so this hike is not totally unexpected. With just 10 days left to got to the polls, the sale of veg and non-veg biryani has also increased as most political parties are spending money on good food for their followers in the campaigning process. A source said, “Most campaigning starts in the night

hours and extends till midnight. So to keep these followers and workers attached to the party, veg and non-veg biryani are also served.” Hemraj (30), a vada-pav vendor at Dadar, said, “As the campaigning is going on, the business has also increased. The workers of political parties buy vada pav in large

quantities as it's affordable and filling too.“ Said Mangal (36), another vendor, “Vada pav is closely associated with Mumbai. If a political party is giving vadapav to its workers it's actually gearing up the 'aamchi Mumbai' spirit in them.” Rakesh Singh (25), another vendor at Chembur, said, “The sale of vada pav at my stall has increased by 50 per cent, all thanks to the election campaigning. The party workers don't purchase twothree vada pavs, they order in bulk.” A political activist, who did not wish to be named, said, “Nowadays people not only need money, but they also want food. So bulk orders are given for all these days.”

It is only Achche Din for Modi: Anand Sharma By A Special Correspondent

F

ormer Union Minister and Congress leader Anand Sharma loudly announced that the PM has miserably failed to fulfill the promises assured to the people of India. Speaking to reporters yesterday at the state Congress headquarters, Sharma said, “Achche Din have come for Modi and his government but society is yet to witness such

days. Modi is depicting a wrong picture of the country. Time has come for him to tender an apology to the people as he has not fulfilled the promises he assured to complete in his first 100 days in office.” He went on to dismiss Modi's claim that India has seen an image improvement internationally due to to him. “Two-thirds of the UN General Assembly was empty dur-

ing Modi's address,” Sharma said. “Our Prime Minister claimed he will bring back black money stashed abroad, which amounts to seven times India's budget. He had claimed that once we get our hands on the black money, India won't require to look back on the budget seven years. Forget seven times, the Modi government did not get even seven per cent of the black money bck," he stated.

A

FTER having chided the Shiv Sena and asking the voters not to vote a government which shies away from sharing the dais with him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did a complete U-turn from his Saturday’s stance in Mumbai, to one of restraint in Sangli yesterday where he chose not to speak against the Sena for what he called his respect to the late Sena chief Bal Thackeray. Likewise Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar although has been critical of the Congress has spared no words for the BJP either. Going by the vitriolic campaign against each other, it does seem on the face of it,at least that all the former allies are trying to prove to the voter their holier than thou attitude. Leaving the voter more agitated than confused. Modi appears to have put a spanner in state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Republican Party of India (Athawale faction – RPI-A) leaders attempts to have post-poll alliances with their now estranged former alliance partner the Shiv Sena. Whatever the flip-flops these political leaders might be indulging in, as of now the voter also pretty much knows it that post-poll on October 19 these bitter sworn enemies will become strange bedfellows once again. Already most of the BJP and the Shiv Sena at present is swamped with expat leaders whose previous ideological leanings were diametrically opposed to their current status. It will be no surprise to anyone post October 19 that the estranged allies patch up or the bizarre alliance gets engaged in the holy matrimony called power sharing. The first indication of the shape of things to come was from NCP chief Sharad Pawar who indicated that post-poll alliance with Congress cannot be ruled out. Similar indications have come from BJP’s Nitin Gadkari and RPI-A’s Ramdas

all it 'Gandhigiri' or a response to the Prime Minister's cleanliness campaign, Shiv Sena workers yesterday cleaned the Mahalaxmi racecourse ground where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a poll rally on Saturday night. Sena corporator Arun Dudhwadkar was on his routine morning walk today when he noticed the garbage at the rally ground, party officials said. Dudhwadkar immediately asked Sena workers to reach the ground and clean the area, they said. Accordingly, Sena workers arrived with brooms and buckets and cleaned the ground, collecting leftover water bottles and campaign flags and banners. The 25-year-old BJP-Shiv Sena alliance split 10 days back amid deadlock over seatsharing for the October 15 Maharashtra Assembly polls. State BJP leaders had announced severing of ties between the two parties, blaming Shiv Sena's "inflexibility" for it. BJP leaders had said the party would not criticise Sena during the poll campaign.

Car thieves annoy Parel residents By Neel Shah

R

esidents of Parel in central Mumbai are in a dilemma owing to the constant thefts of their valuables and relevant materials from within their cars by car thieves. This becomes apparent as in just one night, the thieves broke the windshields of around six cars and fled with valuables from the car. “Today morning I was shocked to learn that the windshield of my car was broken and my laptop and other stuff was stolen,” said 41-year-old Rachna Agarwal. Agarwal, an activist associated with Mumbai Rajya Mahila Lok Ayog NGO, is a resident of Anil Bhavan apartment situated near Tata hospital in Parel. On Sunday morning, she learned about the theft from her car. Agarwal's incident wasn't

just an individual case, as she asserted that in the same lane where her car was parked, five other car windshields were smashed and the burglars fled with the valuables in it. Talking with the ADC, Sunil Tondwalkar, senior inspector of Bhoiwada police station said, “Presently, only three complaints have been received by the police and if there's any other case then we would approach the concerned person and request them to file a complaint.” This would help the police to book the burglars in several cases when they are apprehended, added Tondwalkar. Around three FIRs were lodged by the police and the unidentified burglars will be booked under relevant sections of the IPC, said the police. neel.shah@afternoondc.in Azad Shrivastav | ADC

PIL on Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project

MUMBAI | MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2014

S

ocial activist Priya Rathod has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project, the city’s biggest, by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT). In her petition, the activist has alleged that the underworld is playing a key role by threatening residents and shopkeepers to vacate their place. “The SBUT has hired the underworld to forcefully vacate both the residential and commercial establishments to pave way for redevelopment work,” claimed Priya Rathod. Earlier this year, the Bombay High Court had dismissed her petition for lack of evidence to back the allegation. “This time we are prepared. We have strong evidence, including the names of some former ministers from the Prithviraj Chavan government and few sitting legislators,” she informed. The Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment scheme comprises nine clusters in an area of 16.5 acres; each of these will have two or three towers. Of the 17 buildings planned, 12 will be reserved for about 20,000 tenants. The revamp, which has been undertaken by the SBUT, is one of the two clusters under the state’s 2008 policy aimed at the ho-

listic development of the city’s old congested localities. The project stretches from the J J Flyover junction at Byculla to Minara Masjid in the South and is to be completed in phases by 2020. According to Rathod's lawyer K T Thomas, the tenants in Bhendi Bazaar fear eviction by the underworld without being provided alternative accommodation. “My client (Priya Rathod) is seeking a thorough CBI probe into the matter,” he said. Priya Rathod, a resident of

Bhendi Bazaar, claimed that the whole Bhendi Bazaar project by the SBUT is an eye-wash as there is no clear road map. “The cost projections, the total sum of capital involved, source of funding, the final price of flats when they will be sold, the promises made to existing tenants, the prices paid for purchasing, the sizes of flats which will be given in compensation to those who will be dislocated, where and how they will be re-located, etc, all these important facts are

being deliberately kept vague,” she pointed out. The 38-year-old Priya Rathod said that majority of people in Bhendi Bazaar do not have the resources and money to approach the authorities or go to court. “On the behest of the people, I have approached India’s highest appellate court demanding a CBI investigation to unearth the nexus between the previous government and SBUT,” she concluded. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Bidders seek fourth extension for Navi Mumbai airport E

ven as the decks for the Navi Mumbai international airport have been cleared after all the project-affected villagers gave their consent for land acquisition last week, bidders are now asking for yet another extension. This is the fourth time the bidders have sought extension from the implementing agency City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) for submission of bids. The bidders include GVK Group which runs the current airport in the city and has the first right of refusal in the bidding process, Tata Realty & Infrastructure, among others. In the February round of RFQs, leading companies like Zurich Airport, Ferrovial Aeropuertos, Tata Realty & Infrastructure, Mumbai International Airport (GVK), Srei Infra Finance, Samsung-C&T, IL&FS, GMR Group, Essel Infraprojects, Gensler of US, UK Trade & Investment, and Vinci Concessions India, among others had submitted their bids. The Cidco had floated tenders for the over Rs 14,500-crore project this February and had fixed June 18 as the date of submission of RFQs. The deadline was, however, extended thrice to July 30,

September 2 and October 31, as the bidders sought time to submit the tenders. "Yes, they have asked for one more extension," Cidco vice-chairman and managing director Sanjay Bhatia told PTI, but refused to offer details as to why the bidders are seeking more time again. He, however, said that currently focus is land acquisition after getting the consent of the villagers, rehabilitation and relocation of power transmission lines. According to another Cidco official, who did not wish to be named, the agency may not accept this demand of the bidders as it has already extended it thrice and the critical path of consent has been cleared. Cidco had earlier revised the tender document on the request of the bidders, after which the deadline was extended to September 2.

Earlier, the bidders sought changes in the qualification norms after which the Cidco's revised document has brought significant changes that include holding of up to 26 per cent stake from the 10 per cent earlier by the airlines in the private consortium and allowing foreign airlines to participate in the bids. In all, according to the revised document, 74 per cent stakes will be held by the private consortium, while Cidco will retain the remaining 26 per cent. Only those who clear the RFQ stage will be allowed to bid in the request for proposal (RFP) stage. Cidco was planning to start construction work in 2010 and was planning to commission the first phase of the project by September 2013. However, the project was stuck in pending clearances, as well as opposition from the project affected people. The project needs 2,268 hectares, out of which about 1,160 hectares will be used for aeronautical purposes. The Bombay High Court had last week disposed of a petition filed by local residents opposing the compensation package by the agency and asked them to decide their compensation scheme option by October 6.

reenpeace is going away from its original agenda and turning “unscientific, illogical and blackmailing” the industry in the developing countries, alleged renowned ecologist and a “founder member” of Greenpeace, Dr Patrick Moore. He is no more associated with the organisation. Moore was talking during his visit to the city last week about Greenpeace's recent allegation that it had found harmful pesticides in the tea sold by the leading brands across India. He alleged that studies were commissioned by foreign-funded environmental NGOs with particular agendas against the developing world's industry. Earlier in August, Greenpeace claimed that they have carried out a study across many cities in India over a year to check the quality of tea leaves sold in cities. It had alleged that the study reports revealed the presence of residues of chemical pesticides in a majority of brands. Moore alleged that foreign-funded environment NGOs try to curtail the growth and potential of Indian agricultural sector by spreading disinformation and sharing fabricated facts about pesticides use through its unscientific reports on India. He said, “It is the standard operating procedure (SOP) of Greenpeace to blackmail big brand over the quality of its products. These big brands can not come down

to fight in legal battles or in research because they are afraid of their brands and business. So they come to some consensus. This has been the modus operandi of Greenpeace for years. That is why I parted with Greenpeace in 1986.” Moore said, “Greenpeace is trying to scare people through disinformation about usage of pesticides in India. However, available data shows that Indian farmers are far more economical while suing pesticides as compared to their counterparts in China, Europe or even the USA.” Greenpeace Sr Campaigner Neha Saigal refuted the allegations of Moore. Saigal said, “We have shared the outcome data of our testing with the respective companies.” When asked about the modus operandi as alleged by Moore, she said, “Greenpeace's aim is not to blackmail big brand companies. Our sincere efforts are consumer-oriented. Consumers should be informed.” While talking about funding, Saigal said, “Our balance sheet is open on our official website for the public.”

Ponder awhile... “A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.” — Theodore Roosevelt

Modi blasts Cong., NCP but not Sena S

HIV SENA’s Uddhav Thackeray says the BJP has ‘backstabbed’ him. He is quite critical of the state’s BJP leadership. Evidently, he was quite disappointed that they let him down by quarrelling over seat sharing. He had said that the BJP had not agreed to his proposal that it should be content with only 119 seats while his party must have 150 seats. The BJP wanted for each of the parties 135 seats. The alliance broke up. There was an announcement Shiv Sena’s minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet would resign following the withdrawal of BJP from the alliance. This move, however, was abandoned soon after and Anant Geete, the minister is still there. There appears to be, however, an understanding between Shiv Sena and BJP with regard to post-poll arrangements. They do not say it but it looks like after the poll if the two get the required number, they will come together and form the alliance again. An indication of this was given by the prime minister at a rally in Mumbai a couple of days ago. The PM after blasting the Congress and the NCP stated later he will not criticise Shiv Sena as a mark of respect to Balasaheb Thackeray. This means he has given a clean chit to the Sena and indicated that he would not mind if Sena got a large number of seats. This statement is a clear indication that if the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party can get the required number of seats — 145 — they will form the alliance agan — and the government.

HEY could well have anticipated howls of protest from the professional secularists at what they call the ‘gross misuse’ of the State-owned Doordarshan for the telecast of the annual address of the RSS Chief this Vijaya Dashmi. Admitted, Mohan Bhagwat may not have said anything divisive, anything objectionable. But the mere fact that DD covered him live was enough to raise the hackles of the secularist class. For its critics, fears of the growing RSS influence on the diverse limbs of the State would now be further fleshed out. Since 1925 when the Sangh was founded, Sarsanghchalaks have addressed the faithful and a few prominent invitees on this day to take note of the current challenges and concerns of the people at large. In the normal news cycle, the annual address by the RSS chief would be a priority for all news organizations if they went by a priori considerations. After all, as the head of a volunteer force with millions as active members, and which wields considerable influence over one of the two national parties we have, his words would automatically assume significance. Unfortunately, the dominance of the overbearing secularists on the levers of power in the early years of the Republic had distorted the national discourse. At the peak of Mrs Gandhi’s authoritarian regime being identified even remotely with the RSS and/or the Jana Sangh meant trouble. You could be ostracized in educational institutions or in workplace. Being an RSS member or a sympathizer could also cost your government job. Paradoxically, the news media which ignored the Nagpur address, unfailingly made it a point to cover the dustheap address of the Shiv Sena founder, the late Balasaheb Thackeray. Partly it may be because the media is essentially metro-centric and has little or no presence in small-town India. Besides, Thackeray could be relied upon not to disappoint, yielding headlines in his wild ranting against real or perceived internal enemies. On the other hand, the Vijaya Dashmi discourse by the Sangh chief has always been couched in moderate, conciliatory terms. It emphasized character-building, called for ridding the society of its ills, rather than giving a clarion call for extinguishing real or perceived threats from the fifth columnists. The Sangh chief’s avuncular talk could well put you to sleep, especially if you were not a Sawaymsewak. Thackeray, on the other hand, was all fire and brimstone, tilting at windmills that could jolt you out from deep slumbers. Small wonder the media preferred the Sena chief over the Sangh chief every dustheap. However, that did not mean Nagpur’s annual sermon was not news-worthy. It always was despite the calculated snub by the national media in thrall of the secularist power elites. Besides, the minuscule westward looking chatterati exercised an inordinately large influence on the vernacular classes. As a result, someone who headed a volunteer force that sported wide-bottomed khaki knickers and embraced the old-fashioned values of `Hindu Sanskriti’ was shunned as mentally

and socially backward, beneath one’s notice. If, however, the State-owned broadcaster has corrected the lapse, it ought to be welcome. Those viscerally opposed should be happy to be able to hear for themselves what the ogre of their imagination had to say — and in the process if it helps them shed some of their prejudices the live telecast would have served its purpose. And those well-disposed towards the Sangh would anyway be happy to be able to hear first hand what the public broadcaster all these years had denied them on extraneous grounds. Some people are bound to read in the DD decision a certain audacity on the part of the new regime. That reading wouldn’t be wrong. Yes, Vajpayee would not have sanctioned the DD telecast. But Vajpayee never wore his Sangh shorts in public. Indeed, in his later years he was defensive about his RSS links. Modi, on the other hand, makes no bones of his Sangh pedigree. Far from being defensive, he is proud of it. Besides, the BJP did not have a majority of its own when Vajpayee was PM,

entitlement spree unleashed by the previous government, has, on the contrary, further embellished it by undertaking such schemes as universal Jan Dhan bank accounts and a universal provision of public toilets. So, secularists can cry foul from the house tops but Modi’s Doordarshan will be more open, more representative than it ever was all through the Congress years. However, a word of caution will be in order. After the eventful Janata interregnum, when Indira Gandhi, with son Sanjay in front, returned to power in 1980, their swagger knew no bounds. Sanjay was particularly brash and headstrong. Indeed, his critics feared a return to the Emergency. And his lumpen supporters came up with a slogan. Which went something like this: Ma Sarkar Banayegi, Beta Car Banayega. The taunt was for those who had railed ceaselessly against Sanjay’s Maruti project and his misuse of the government apparatus. It is another matter that hubris soon claimed the mother and son duo, with Mrs Gandhi failing to provide purposeful administration and the wayward son perishing in a plane crash. The moral: Bypass the critics by all means, ignore the media, but never commit the sin of arrogance. In a republican system, the click of a mere button on the voting machine can overnight make the PM a nobody — and a nobody PM.

Poor Jayalalithaa INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor though even if it had, we doubt if Vajpayee would have okayed the telecast. Vajpayee was part of the New Delhi establishment, keen for its approval. Modi is a self-confessed outsider who cares little whether or not he enjoys the goodwill of the entrenched power elites. It is also important to remember that Modi has consciously turned his back on the chattering classes, the secularist professionals, the media in general and the English language media in particular. He feels he can get by alright without craving constantly for its approval. Therefore, in sanctioning the telecast the thought that he would be criticized might have mattered little to him. For someone who has decided to reach out to the people directly, bypassing the media, the decision to telecast live Bhagwat’s address might have been rather easy. If you put yourself in Modi’s shoes, you will have no difficulty appreciating his decision. Here is a politician who for over a decade was demonized no end by the secularist class, the English language commentariat being particularly vicious in dubbing him a ‘mass murderer’ and worse. Still, if he managed to win a majority on his own, he has reason to hold the media in contempt. His intrinsic faith in the democratic system gives him confidence to take on all his traducers and still succeed. That would also explain some of his policies, which, instead of winding down the

ER lawyers let her down. If only she had known how Mayawati had explained away her unearned billions she would not have been in jail at this point of time. And the explanation the BSP boss offered for those crores in cash which she banked or bought plum pieces of real estate with all over was pretty simple. She claimed that her fans, who apparently love her dearly, had given her crores as token of their appreciation. And, mind you, all these donations were in small sums less than Rs. 20,000, a figure at which furnishing the names of donors becomes mandatory. The Bangalore magistrate who convicted the AIADMK boss found that there was Rs. 14 crores in unaccounted cash deposited in Jayalalithaa’s accounts between 1991-96 when she was chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Now, that is insulting Mayawati. That tiny sum would not even buy a small corner of one of the dozens of prime properties our Dalit czarina owns in the heart of Lutyens’ Delhi — and all thanks to donations you must know from her devotees. And for taxmen’s purposes most of those properties are named BSP Bhawan and, pray, who owns BSP? Who else but our Mayawati. Indeed, sometime ago a Delhi High Court bench had put its seal of approval on her plea that she was gifted an expensive house in central Delhi by a Jain couple since they were impressed by her Dalit mission. Since like Mayawati, Jayalalithaa too owns the party she heads, how come she did not rely on the established case law? A very costly blunder, indeed. She must get rid of her lawyers. a failure — that is absolutely certain — because in fact no individual problem exists: mind is the problem. You will destroy yourself, not the tree. — Osho

Salute to Mary Kom

THE unseemly row kicked up by the Congress on the live telecast of the Sangh Pramukh's Vijayadasami address in DD only goes to show that the age-old party is totally blind to the ground realities. It needs to resign to the fact that it was the Sangh that threw itself headlong into the electoral battle in April with all its 40,000 shakas all over the country to see that the Lotus bloomed in all its glory, to the exclusion of all other lilies and hyacinths in the water. Now that it has materialised as planned, it is in the driver's seat and gleefully running the show. This is only the beginning and a lot more lies in store for the vanquished Congress, for which it has to be prepared. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

tally instead of finishing in the eighth position. Fifty seven medals is not a mean achievement. The show of 37 bronze medals could have been converted to silver if our stars showed little resilience in the end games. The finishing touch was missing and we finished with only 11 gold medals and 9 silver medals in the end. The hockey and kabaddi golds made us proud in the end. Time to go all out in all such sporting events to make more meaningful performances, more than what we have achieved now.

APROPOS 'Mary Kom wins first gold in women's Asian Games boxing' (ADC, Oct 2) , it is indeed a heartening piece of news on Mary Kom's winning the gold medal after her layoff period of two years from the ring. She achieved two firsts – a gold in the Asian Games by a woman and in boxing. Her story of perseverance and hard work involved in becoming a world class boxer is not unknown to the sports world. Unfortunately by her own statement the promised facilities for her achieving the Herculean feats by the state government are yet to materialise. The government should look into this and ease the life of this extraordinary boxer and her family at the earliest so she could win further laurels for the nation in future global sports events. Maybe the Prime Minister's intervention will expedite this.

bility for the acts of the UPA govt?

SEEING the coverage given on DD of the Dussehra rally of the RSS, the secularists have risen up in arms against the Modi government. Leading the pack were our comrades, ever-eager to show the BJPled government in bad light. The Indian secular lobby needs to be reminded that during the Republic Day parade of January 26, 1964, which the RSS was officially allowed to take part in, with whose permission can anybody guess? It was none other than the first PM of Independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru.

THE live telecast by the Dooradarshan of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's speech at a Dussehra rally in Nagpur as propaganda for Hindu rashtra is total misuse of the state broadcaster by the Narendra Modi government. Since the RSS is a communal organisation and wants to divide the people of the country on the basis of caste and religion they should not have been allowed to telecast their speech on DD. The precedents of allowing communal organisations like the RSS to address their views on DD exposed the dirty intentions of the BJP government and the RSS. The address of any private organisation which believes in propagandising their communal agenda at the behest of the Dooradarshan must be disallowed.

Bear injustice silently Indian boxer L Sarita Devi's refusal to accept her bronze medal on the podium went against the values of sportsmanship. It is a matter of great pride to win an Asian Games medal but the way the boxer disowned the medal and left it on the podium went against the ground rules of the sporting fraternity. When the presentation was over, she left the medal behind despite being told by the organisers to take it with her. If an athlete feels cheated there needs to be an official

IT'S a very good campaign, this Swachh Bharat which our Prime Minister announced in his Independence Day speech and launched on Gandhi Jayanthi. He mentioned that this should be implemented right through the country and even sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for each village panchayat from the Centre. For this campaign to be truly successful though, he should start cleaning the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas, both of which have many tainted members. With the brute majority that he has, it should not be difficult for him to make an amendment to the Representation of People's Act, so no candidate accused of serious crime should be allowed to stand for elections, a reform which has been pending for more than a decade. SWACHH Bharat is a nice initiative ; but then does it mean only external cleanliness? If that's so, then it is 'Aadha Swachh Bharat' because if we aren't clean from inside too, this abhiyan will have no relevance. It will be a one-day wonder and every thing will be back to normal. USING his great oratory skills, Prime Minister Narendra Modi connected with millions of Indians via All India Radio. The broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat' reached the breadth and width of the country. It had an estimated 92 per cent outreach in terms of area and 99.2 per cent in terms of population. His way of greeting people on Vijayadashmi was unique and he combined it with Gandhiji's call for cleanliness. His call to join the cleaning movement has touched people all over the country and people now talk about cleanliness in every form. nion HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Sunday accused the erstwhile Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra of being responsible for farmers' suicides, saying the state was pushed into a "bad" condition because of their policies. Addressing a BJP rally in Jalgaon in run-up to October 15 Assembly elections, the actressturned-politician appealed to people to "get rid" of Congress and NCP, who are fighting the polls separately. "The 'aghadi sarkar' (Democratic Front government) is responsible for the bad condition of the state and for suicides committed by farmers. It is also responsible for unemployment of youths and various other problems," Irani told PTI.

MNS springs a surprise, gives poll ticket to a north Indian I

n a move that has caused eyebrows to raise, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the party known for its anti-north Indian stand since its birth in 2006, has given candidature to a north Indian for the October 15 state Assembly polls. Akhilesh Chaubey, whose roots are traced to Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, has been fielded as the MNS candidate from the Kandivli (East) constituency. General secretary of the legal cell of the Raj Thackeray-led party, Chaubey is the party's only north Indian candidate in the upcoming polls. He is also the party's first ever north Indian poll nominee so far. A lawyer by profession, Chaubey says his party is not against any particular community as perceived by some and it welcomes anyone willing to contribute to the develop-

Akhilesh Chaubey, MNS candidate ment of the state. "My party does not want people who do not have work-related agenda on their minds. We welcome all who are sure of what they want to do with their lives. We want people from other states, who are not just willing to contribute to the progress of Maharashtra, but also

focus on their personal development," Chaubey told PTI. Interestingly, Kandivli (East) constituency has the highest number of north Indian voters, followed by the Marathi and Gujaratis. In terms of number, out of the total 2,72,000 voters in the constituency, 90,000 are north Indians, followed by 74,000 Marathi people and 60,000 Gujaratis. North Indians, thus, form almost one-third of the total electorate and giving candidature to someone from Uttar Pradesh could be the party's bid to reach out to the migrants from north India. However, Chaubey says that the strong presence of the north Indians is not the only factor that got him party's candidature. A gradual realisation among voters, that MNS believes in the development of the state and not in caste-based politics also contributed to it, he said.

T

he maiden electoral battle for senior state BJP leader Vinod Tawde may not be a cakewalk as former ally Shiv Sena reportedly wants its cadre to ensure his defeat since it blames him to be one of the architects of the breakup of the 25-year-old saffron alliance. However, the 'Narendra Modi effect' among Tawde's Borivli constituency's Gujarati and Maharashtrian Brahmin population is likely to see him through, say observers. Tawde, who has risen from a ABVP activist to be one of the top state leaders and is among Maharashtra BJP's core group members with Chief Ministerial ambitions, chose Borivali Assembly seat in Mumbai North parliamentary constituency because Vile Parle, where he resides, was in the quota of BJP's now former ally Shiv Sena. With an electorate of 3.24 lakh, Borivli has predominantly middle-class mixed population, including Gujaratis and Maharashtrians, reports PTI. If Shiv Sena-BJP alliance had continued, Tawde would not have had to slog to enter the Assembly, observers feel. Sena leader Vinod Ghosalkar, seeking re-election from neighbouring Dahisar Assembly seat of North Mumbai, says had the alliance stayed, Tawde would have won hands down. "But now, he would have to work hard because Shiv Sena has given ticket to a local candidate, who is a professional (chartered accountant) and of Rajasthani origin. Borivali is a cosmopolitan area and our candidate is well known," he said. However, Tawde, striking a balancing act by campaigning across the state as well as in Borivali, is highlighting the need to strengthen public transport. Tawde, Leader of Opposition in state Legislative Council, also rubbished Sena's claim that he was among the BJP leaders responsible for break-up of the alliance. "I don't want to comment on this allegation. We are focussing on appealing people to vote for the BJP just as they had done in the Lok Sabha elections," Tawde told PTI. Shiv Sena candidate Uttam Prakash Agarwal said Borivali comprises of educated and politically aware voters and there are no predetermined notions about the area being a stronghold of any particular party. "The organisational structure of Shiv Sena is amazing and it's because of the efforts put in by late Bal Thackeray. The Sena-BJP were in alliance for the last 25 years and Shiv Sena never got a chance to contest from this area because BJP, under Ram Naik, was flourishing here. After Ram Naik, the BJP organisation has floundered while Shiv Sena is

strong and intact," he said. When asked if he considers Tawde his main opponent, Agarwal, who was formerly with the BJP, said he is a local and resident of Borivali since the time he landed in Mumbai several years back. "I face no challenge," he claimed. "I am in public life for the last 25 years and am known in Borivli. Professionals from different walks of life in Borivli are on a mission to get me elected. Similarly, Chartered Accountants from different parts of the country are coming to campaign for me," he said. Agarwal said he is highlighting the Sena's vision document and wants to make Borivli an education hub. "My profession (CA) gives me the position to ensure employment to several youth," he said. On reports that Shiv Sena has asked its followers to ensure de-

Vinod Tawde, BJP candidate feat of Tawde, BJP city president Ashish Shelar in Bandra (west) and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Eknath Khadse in Muktainagar, holding them responsible for breakup of the alliance, Agarwal said, "Why only these three.. we have geared up to defeat all our opponents." The Congress has nominated Ashok Sutrale from Borivli and MNS candidate is Nayan Kadam. Magathane Assembly seat, which comprises areas of Borivli (East,) has a good number of population from Konkan belt. Had Tawde contested from there and put up Hemendra Mehta, a senior BJP leader and Magathane candidate, in Borivli, it would have been smooth sailing for both, said Yogesh Trivedi, a senior journalist and Borivli resident. "Now both Mehta and Tawde will find it tough because Sena votes will go to party's own candidates," Trivedi said. However, Srikrishna Acharya, a tax consultant and resident of Borivli for over 30 years, feels BJP has an edge over its MNS and Sena rivals because of Prime Minister Modi.

Make ‘Paid News’ electoral offence N

EW DELHI: A majority of respondents to a Law Commission consultation paper have supported making paid news an electoral offence, a suggestion advocated by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath. "On the question of whether to include paid news as an offence under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, all respondents but four of the 15 agreed that it should be made an offence...," an 'overview of the response' circulated by the Law Commission said. The Law panel document said opinions varied on the type of offence, with a majority favouring an electoral offence under RP Act, while a few respondents arguing for a general offence.

The response to the consultation paper was circulated ahead of the national consultations held by the panel last week on media laws. Addressing the consultations here last Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Sampath had said that paid news should be made an electoral offence that attracts disqualification so that it acts as a deterrent. He had also said when the Election Commission looked into whether it had the powers to deal with paid news it found the "answer was negative". One response argued for two channels of prosecution for paid news to be made available -- the first as a corrupt practice under Section 123 of RP Act and the second as an electoral offence under Chapter IX A of the IPC.

Sonali makes her fiction comeback

15

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2014

Sonali Bendre was a film star with popular films like ‘Aag’, ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Diljaale’, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ and also did popular films down South and hosted a dance show on television named 'Kya Masti Kya Dhoom'. She was also a judge at 'Indian Idol' on Sony. Now she is all set to make a mark in a fiction show, ‘Ajeeb Dastaan Hain Ye’, to be beamed on LIFE OK. Sonali speaks to us about her new show By Sandeep Hattangadi What made you accept this show for your comeback? This festive season, Life OK in association with Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms gears up for the launch of the fiction show, 'Ajeeb Daastaan Hain Ye'. The show highlights the journey of a tenacious woman, Shobha (Sonali Bendre), who fights against all odds for her family and their well-being. It will premiere on October 7 at 9.30 pm. All the big names associated with the show are enough reason to make my debut with this show.

What is the show all about? The story is about Shobha, who was happy and content in her own little world until she was left devastated after her politician husband Samarth (Harsh Chhaya) was put behind bars for breach of information. Overnight, she was left holding the reins of her family in the aftermath of her husband’s conduct. While trying to collect all pieces and settle, Shobha ends up meeting Vikram (Apurva Agnihotri), a coffee shop owner who hires her as his assistant. Apart from dealing with difficulties of life at home, she also faces her galling boss at work. Can you elucidate? 'Ajeeb Daastaan Hain Ye' also touches upon the secluded issue of infidelity. It highlights the tryst of a woman who is estranged by her husband and is made to break out of her inhibitions in the quest to find happiness for her loved ones. It's a journey of a woman from being a content homemaker to displaying the courage to step out and gain financial independence in order to secure the lives of her loved ones, her children. How different are you from your character? Shobha loves rains. The smell and everything. It's romantic for her but I never liked rains because it leads to traffic jams and water clogging. I cannot do without coffee and need it every morning unlike Shobha. How do you look after your children? My kid is now nine years and things are more sorted than before.

How did it all start? Initially I was a little skeptical about taking up a fiction show until Ekta narrated Shobha’s character to me and I agreed instantly. The strength of the character and how she faces her life head on is what appealed to me. The fact that instead of being treated like a doormat, she picks up her life and decides to have a fresh start is what resonated with me. I hope the audience accepts me in the new role and supports me in this endeavour. I am coming to fiction after 10 years. This show means a lot to me. I trust Ekta's storytelling. And there are so many layers in this character. I am proud of being feminine and that's what Ekta gave me, there is no loss of feminity, which looks very believable.

Will the show work? I believe the show will work as the story line is so hard hitting that viewers will watch the show. I am excited on moving from non-fiction to fiction. I also sometimes feel that I am shooting for a film as the show is fiction. How many episodes are we looking at? It’s a finite series and that is one of reason why I accepted the show. Because earlier I had never thought of doing a fiction show. Our episodes are fixed, we have a graph.

Artistes get more respect in India than in Pak: Mohib Mirza

A

ctor Mohib Mirza says he is touched by the adulation Pakistani artistes are getting in India, which is more than what they receive back home. Mohib, who is on Indian TV screens with his show 'Yeh Shaadi Nahi Ho Sakti' on Zindagi channel, finds the appreciation from Indian audience towards Pakistani talent surreal. “I feel elated that our shows have made their way into people's hearts in India. This kind of respect and appreciation towards actors is unbelievable and is something we haven't experienced at home. “In fact, whenever I have told anyone in India that I am a Pakistani actor, I have seen them treating me with so much regard and it feels amazing,” Mohib told PTI from Karachi. The 35-year-old actor says the biggest example of India's hospitality is the big welcome that Pakistani actor Fawad Khan got here. “We used to think it will be difficult for Fawad to make a name for himself in Bollywood because after all he is a foreigner there but his popularity in India has stunned all of us. We are ecstatic and proud,” Mohib said. When asked if he would want to work in Hindi films, the actor said not only he but many Pakistani actors harbour a desire to act in Bollywood. “Bollywood is a very big and renowned industry, so actors here definitely wish to work there. Artistes face many limitations here. “Though things have improved, there is a section of society, which believes acting and performing arts are bad culture. That resistance is there hence as an actor you feel like going to a place where you are readily accepted and you have the freedom to work. So, people here eye Bollywood,” he said.

TV TATTLE New comedy show

Not interested in playing father's role: Harsh

opular TV actor Harsh Chhaya says he is bored of playing roles of a father or family patriarch on the small screen. The 'Swabhimaan' star feels the shelf-life of a TV actor is getting smaller because they do not have much to experiment with. “The scenario in TV is sad these days. If an actor is above 30, you can only play a father or a toothless family head. And if you are above 35 then you can only play a grandfather. All such offers kept me away from fiction for a long time,” Harsh told PTI. But the actor is returning to daily soap with a special appearance on Colors' 'Balika Vadhu', where he will be seen playing an obsessive painter who eventually falls in love with the show's protagonist, Anandi. “The role is quite off-the-routine. I am playing a painter, who is obsessive and rude in nature and has come to Udaipur to display his work. It's a small role. But my character is a different person when he paints, he turns calm, poised, sensitive and gentle,” he said. Harsh started his career in showbiz when satellite television was at the nascent stage but did quality work on shows like 'Tara' and 'Hasratein' in the 1990s. But as the content saw a downfall, Harsh ventured into films. “Earlier, if an actor was unemployed for two months he would remain in that situation maximum for six months but now the scenario has completely changed. If an actor is unemployed for six months, then he has the chances of not getting offers for two years. There is a cut throat competition now,” he said.

NOTES FROM NEW DELHI

By Prabhat Ranjan Deen

I

n the recent Uttar Pradesh byelections for the Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha seats, the Samajwadi Party (SP) toned down its communal side, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remained stuck in it. As a result, the Samajwadi Party snatched eight out of 11 Legislative Assembly seats from the BJP. Senior SP leader Azam Khan, who tends to take a wayward communal line in an attempt to polarise votes, was kept in an absolutely ‘quiet zone’ by the SP. The BJP, however, through pro-active elements, made attempts to create a turbulent atmosphere. But the voters of Uttar Pradesh took a clear line and showed that they are not at all interested in playing the communal card and becoming pawns. Samajwadis say that the suggestions and directions of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the concrete strategy of Shivpal Singh and strong execution by Akhilesh Yadav salvaged the prestige of the party which had been lost in the Lok Sabha elections. In fact, the strategy of the Samajwadi Party demolished the designs of the BJP. The policy of Love Jihad back fired and shook the very foundations of the BJP. Now the party will have to think afresh about their strategies and planning and will have to make modifications. It is notable that out of the 11 seats for which the by-elections were fought, 10 were vacated by the resignation of 10 BJP MLAs and one MLA of their supporting party, the Apna Dal. Out of these 11 seats, the SP snatched eight seats. The SP had fielded candidates from 11 Legislative Assem-

bly seats and one Lok Sabha seat – the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat vacated by the resignation of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. The SP didn’t want the BJP to get any opportunity for polarising votes in the by-elections. In the by-elections the SP also kept senior Cabinet Minister Azam Khan away from any responsibility. Khan had been the star campaigner for the party during the Lok Sabha elections, but for campaigning in the byelections his name was not included in the list of 23 ministers. In the Lok Sabha elections Khan had campaigned vigorously, but due to the contentious statements he had made, he remained mired in controversy. The SP leadership believed that Khan’s presence in the campaign would benefit only the BJP. A senior leader of the SP said that Khan has the capability to attract Muslim voters towards himself by his emotional speeches, but in the Lok Sabha elections, due to his speeches, Hindu votes had been polarised against the SP. The

party leadership believed that the presence of Khan in the by-elections would give a chance to the BJP to polarise votes in the name of religion. Therefore, Khan was not invited to the meeting which Mulayam Singh Yadav had called to frame the party’s strategy for the by-elections. A leader of the SP had said that in these by-elections, the party didn’t want Khan in an active role at all. The atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh had become such that if Muslim voters went to polling booths in large numbers, then Hindu voters too would have voted in large numbers. Hence, the Samajwadi leadership thought it more appropriate to play a safe game, and it paid off. Understanding the indications from the party high command, Khan too kept a check on his activities and speech. But, in spite of this the BJP kept working along polarisation lines. It was here itself that the BJP made a mistake. It didn’t pay attention to the SP’s mature politics. It didn’t understand the ‘engineering’ behind

the absence of Muslim candidates. It couldn’t estimate the farsighted results of the mysterious silence of Khan. The BJP brought forward its extremist MP, Yogi Adityanath and Swami Hari Sakshi, whereas the SP kept its moderate leaders in the frontline. The SP took care that Hindu votes should not be divided and the BJP focused its attention on dividing the vote. The BJP took these byelections lightly, whereas the SP linked it to its existence and made its strategy accordingly. The SP wanted to take revenge for its crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in spite of having a majority Government in Uttar Pradesh, and the SP succeeded in regaining the credibility tarnished in the Lok Sabha elections. The new political self-confidence of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was clearly visible after the election results. He said that through the power of the vote people had thwarted the plans of sectionalising forces. The results of the by-elections prove that people voted against communal forces and rejected them. People want peace and brotherhood. In the by-elections, communal powers tried to gain by spreading hatred, but people pushed them back through the power of the vote. Akhilesh didn’t forget to repeat the promise that after the byelections the SP Government would do development work with greater responsibility. Senior leader of the SP, strategist and State Public Works Minister, Shivpal Singh, said that people gave votes for development. Communal forces acquired power in the Lok Sabha elections by misleading people, but people had now understood the reality.

DILLI KA BABU Red tape rules

Senior bureaucrats, you would assume, would know how to deal with their kind. But the ways of babudom can sometimes flummox even the most experienced babus, as Rajasthan’s Chief Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi recently discovered. Mehrishi, who is in the running to be the next Cabinet Secretary, got a taste of red tapism from officials in his own State. His claim for Rs. 112 against his Travel Allowance Bill was rejected by the State Finance Department and was cleared only after Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje intervened in the matter! Apparently, Mehrishi had submitted his air travel bill, which included the service charge of Rs. 112. While the accounts department cleared the bill, it refused to reimburse the service charge. The resultant spat apparently led to 20 official meetings between Mehrishi and senior bureaucrats, including the Finance Secretary! Finally the matter reached State Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje through the Finance Secretary. She cleared the file and the Chief Secretary got his reimbursement!

Future in doubt

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has traditionally been an interface between the Government and the media. But babus in PIB are worried that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is stepping into roles that were meant for them. They fear that the Government is planning to sideline the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the PIB specifically. Their fears are not exactly unfounded, say observers. When Prakash Javadekar was made I&B Minister, among his first official utterances was the hope that the I&B Ministry would cease to exist in a few years! The babus are, understandably, feeling unsure about their future. The first sign of the erosion of authority was noted when PMO transferred Sharat Chander, an Indian Information Service officer, from the PM unit of PIB to the Prime Minister’s Office. He is now Information Officer in the PMO, providing assistance to Jagdish Thakkar. Another sign of PMO dominance, the babus point out, is that very often PMO puts up content on the PIB website on its own, without informing the information babus.

I

n its recent historic judgment the Supreme Court has proved the report of the coal scam to be true and except for four coal blocks (two of Government companies and two others), cancelled all the rest. As soon as the Supreme Court’s judgment came, some TV channels along with some people started making a clamour that we were the first to telecast this report or we were the first to publish it and our report has been proved to be true by the Supreme Court. Accepting their words, we would like to make only one request: that these television channels and the rest of the media, in which the print

media is also included, disclose date they on which published/telecast their ‘first’ report and after that on which date did they publish/telecast their ‘second’ report and what was its essence? We are saying this only because readers in India are always deceived. 'Chauthi Duniya' had published the biggest coal scam of history on April 25, 2011 as the cover story of 'Chauthi Duniya' under the headline ‘Sarkar Ne Desh ko Bech Dala: 26 Lakh crore ka Maha-ghotala’. We had sent this report to the former BJP President, Nitin Gadkari, and his secretary Shyam Jaju, along with a printed copy. These people had not paid any attention to it, neither did they hold a press conference regarding this question. The thing to realise is that this issue was first raised by an MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party itself,

but for some special reasons, the Bharatiya Janata Party ignored what its own MP was saying. We also sent this published report to MPs of the Marxist party, but they too ignored it. We published this report again in June 2012. And it was only us who published it with this question as a heading in our newspaper: ‘Manmohan Singh jail ja sakte hain’ (‘Manmohan Singh can go to Jail’). 'Chauthi Duniya' continuously kept publishing reports regarding the coal scam. Copies of all these issues of 'Chauthi Duniya' kept going to the Supreme Court. We sent them officially to the Chief Justice of India. We can’t say that the Chief Justice or other judges of the Supreme Court made up their mind on reading our reports, but we can certainly say this much and can congratulate the

Supreme Court that if the Supreme Court had not kept an eye on this scam, then this scam wouldn’t have come before us. I request Parliament to take corrective measures and identify those from within itself, who are working as pressure groups for corporates, big companies, vested interests, for foreign powers; are going to Ministers, are building pressure on the Government and are playing their role in making the bureaucracy corrupt. If there is no one like that in this Parliament, then we would like that Parliament should say that there is no one like that amongst us or no such group is there. Then we will do an expose of who are the people and which people are doing what. But before that it is our humble request that Parliament itself identifies such people and boycotts them.

In Modi sarkar, the old ways and practices don’t work anymore, as some babus seeking extension of their Central deputation are discovering. In the UPA regime such extensions had come to be seen as “routine”. However the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently rejected several proposals, say sources. Last month the ACC rejected the proposal to extend the deputation of Information and Broadcasting Secretary Ms Supriya Sahu beyond October. In its recent meeting, sources, say, several similar decisions were taken. Among those whose extensions were rejected are Punjab IAS officer K.A. Prasad Sinha as Joint Secretary in the Atomic Energy Department, DG of Election Commission Akshay Rawat, CEO of Khadi and Village Industries Commission Uday Pratap Singh. Many observers believe that by repatriating a few officers to their parent cadres, Modi sarkar is creating space to appoint babus of its choice. Clearly, there will be more such repatriations in the weeks ahead. Watch this space for details. — Dilip Cherian

I WOULD HAVE PROTESTED DIFFERENTLY: MARY KOM SPORTS

EW DELHI: She understands the emotion behind L Sarita Devi's tearful protest on the Asian Games podium but M C Mary Kom, who became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold at the mega-event, said faced with a similar crisis, she would have shown dissent differently. Speaking to PTI after returning from Incheon, Mary Kom said she does not want to dwell on the controversy too much but supports her fellow Manipuri. "I really do not want to comment on it anymore. I feel sad for her, she should have won that semifinal bout. I understand her pain and fully support the issue she raised but personally I would have protested differently though I can't say how. This is my personal thought but I support her," said the Olympic bronzemedallist and five-time world champion. "I hope judges and referees are fair in all competitions, there is nothing more I can say on it." Sarita had refused to accept her bronze medal during the Games' presentation ceremony after controversially losing her semifinal bout to Korean Ji-na Park. Disconsolate on the podium, Sarita hung the bronze around Park's neck before walking away as a mark of protest.

Asian Games gold medalist boxer Mary Kom is greeted with garlands upon her arrival at the International Airport in Imphal on Sunday.

I really do not want to comment on it anymore. I feel sad for her, she should have won that semifinal bout. I understand her pain and fully support the issue she raised but personally I would have protested differently though I can't say how. This is my personal thought but I support her.

Her actions prompted the nary proceedings against her International Boxing Associ- even as the Olympic Council ation (AIBA) to open discipli- of Asia let her off with a warn-

ing. Sarita has since apologised for her actions on the podium. However, the Koreans did draw quite a bit of flak for the standard of judging in the bouts involving their boxers with five countries writing to AIBA to protest. Mary Kom, who defeated a Korean in the opening round, said she personally did not feel anything fishy in her bouts. "I faced a Korean in the

first round itself. The only difference I can tell you is that in Sarita's case it was 70 per cent Sarita and 30 per cent Park. But it was 100 per cent Mary in my bout," she said. In fact, the 31-year-old mother-of-three Mary said she did not face a single tough bout in the competition. "I feel the bouts were all easy for me there. I never took any of them lightly before stepping into the ring but ended up winning easily. They were tiring but easy bouts," she laughed. "As far as the level of competition is concerned, I feel it is more or less the same that I faced in Guangzhou Asian Games. It hasn't changed much but I personally feel fitter and stronger," said the Manipuri, who had won a bronze in the previous edition of the Games. Basking in the glory of her historic feat at the Asiad, where she was the only goldmedallist in boxing for India, Mary Kom said she is undecided about participating in the World Championships scheduled from November 13 in Jeju Islands in Korea. "I don't know, I have not thought about it as yet. I will decide whether to go later this month," she said. Talking about her future, Mary Kom said her next target is a gold medal in Rio Olympics in 2016. "I want a gold there. I will try my level best to be there," she signed off.

Asiad gold proved hockey is still alive in India: Oltmans By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

N

EW DELHI: India's gold medal in the just-concluded Asian Games after a 16-year hiatus has proved that hockey is "still alive and kicking" in the country which has a rich history in the sport, feels High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans. A spirited India outclassed arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 in a nerve-wrecking shoot-out to regain the Asian Games men's hockey gold medal after a gap of 16 years and also sealed a direct entry into the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Before embarking for the Asian Games, there was immense pressure on highly- Asian Games gold medalist Indian paid Oltmans and chief coach hockey team Goalkeeper PR Terry Walsh to deliver results, Sreejesh with his young daughter but the legendary Dutchman and wife upon arrival at the said the performance in In- International Airport in Kochi on cheon will definitely silence Sunday.

the critics of hockey. "I never feel pressure. The word pressure in not in my dictionary. I know my job. I know what I am doing and the same way Terry knows what he is doing. It is important that people have faith in us and let us do our work," Oltmans told PTI in an interview. "I hope the gold will silence the critics for quite some time now. This gold proves that hockey is still alive and kicking in this country," he said. Oltmans, who is in charge of the overall development of Indian hockey, is satisfied with the performance of both the men's and women's team, but said there is still lots to improve upon. "Of course I'm satisfied with the performances. It is close to maximum. We had a chance to win silver in the women's competition. Both the women's and men's

teams created a lot of goal scoring chances which tells that we are going in the right direction. But there are plenty of areas to improve," he said. The Dutchman, however, warned Indian hockey fans not to get carried away with the gold in the Asian Games as he feels the eight-time Olympic champions have a long way to go to match the likes to Australia, Netherlands and Germany. "We all have to realise that this was a championship in Asia. In the World Cup we saw how the Asian teams fared. We need to understand that Holland, Germany and Australia are the top three teams in the world and just below them are teams like Argentina, New Zealand, England and we are now a part of the second group. "The level of Asian hockey

now is not upto that mark. The reality is our level right now is not good enough to match the top three teams of the world. What we are looking for is consistency and improvement in the level of our performance and we need to work on these areas so that we are in a position to play and win against the top three teams in the next two years time," Oltmans said. India's defence has been its perennial problem in international tournaments but Oltmans feels the backline fared impressively in the Asian Games. "There is never a perfect game in hockey. I never found it, we came as close as possible. But in the Asian Games, India proved that it can defend," he said. "On the attacking front we could have scored more goals. But overall the structure has improved."

VISAKHAPATNAM: After putting up a stellar performance at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, tennis player Saketh Sai Myneni said here that he is targeting the 2016 Rio Olympics by securing a position in top 100 in ATP men's ranking. It gave me a great exposure," he said. On playing with Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, Sanketh said, "It was a great opportunity. I have not faced any problem because I knew Sania Mirza and her game. In fact it is great as a such a good player like her chose to play the mixed doubles with me. I Understood the game plan and executed it well to win the medal." What came first?

ike the proverbial chicken & egg, people wonder what came first. Bad bidding or elegant play? Do players bid badly because their

BRIDGE hand play is good or do they become a good player by reaching difficult contracts & making them? Well here is a case in point. Abhay Todankar is a good card player & makes tricky contracts with ease. S- A Q 3 2 H- J 8 5 D- A 10 C- A K 9 2

S- K J 10 6 5 4 H- K Q 7 D- Q 9 2 C- J

In spite of one Ace missing & partner having values in his singleton Abhay marched towards 6 spades. A heart was led. East won with Ace & returned a heart. Take it over. You have 11 tricks.

The 12th has to come from either diamonds or clubs. It would be foolish to play for diamond King singleton in either hand or diamond jack singleton in east hand. Such things happen only in fairy tales. The more realistic chance is a squeeze on either opponent, if he is holding diamond King & club Q 10 x. But if it is east holding these cards he will not be squeezed because he will be discarding after dummy. Abhay therefore found a perfect answer to this dilemma. The Vienna Coup! After winning with heart King, he drew trumps, then cashed the diamond Ace, & ran all but 1 trump, reaching this position D- 10 C- A K 9 S- 4 D- Q 9 C- J

When he cashed the last trump throwing the 10 of diamonds from dummy, neither opponent could hold on to diamond King & Q 10 x club (if it was in the same hand). It was indeed the case & 12 tricks rolled home.

Noel stops Ravindra’s bid for triple crown M UMBAI: Ravindra Kotiyan and Rutuja Khopkar who were in line for a triple crown, had to settle for a double each in the KRC-Pratap Vora Memorial District Ranking Tournament held in Kandivali yesterday. Ravindra, who was top seeded in the men, youth and junior boys, bagged the youth and junior boys events with ease. However, seasoned Noel Pinto, seeded second behind Ravindra, turned the tables in the fast-paced men’s singles final with a 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 611, 11-5 win. Likewise, Rujuta, who is in her last year as a junior, upset top seeded Charvi Kawle as well as Mrunmayee Mhatre on her way to the women’s singles crown. Earlier, she outplayed Tanvita Thakur in straight games to win the junior girls title. ARCELONA (SPAIN): Record-chasing Lionel Messi and Neymar scored as Spanish league leader Barcelona eased to a 20 win at nine-man Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Messi chipped goalkeeper Antonio "Tono" Rodriguez in the 35th minute for his 249th league goal, leaving him two behind the all-time scoring record held by Telmo Zarra since 1955. A minute later, Neymar added his seventh league goal in as many rounds, giving the strike pair a combined 13 of Barcelona's 19 goals in league play. "This goes in runs. The connection between (Messi and Neymar) is working for us now and others will appear," Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. Rayo was spared a larger defeat thanks to Barcelona not exploiting its chances, despite the hosts finishing two men down after Jorge Morcillo and Javier Aquino received their second bookings. Barcelona's sixth win, to go with one draw, left it two points ahead of Valencia, after it beat Atletico Madrid 3-1. Atletico's first league loss dropped the defending champion five points adrift of Barcelona and provisionally in third. Sevilla, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo can all pass it with wins on Sunday. Jemez pulled one center back at halftime to add Manucho up front, and Rayo lost its second center back, Morcillo, to a second booking in the 60th. But Barcelona had to settle for the comfortable win instead of the rout after Messi missed late chances. Aquino, who went

23 on in the second half, was sent off in stoppage time for an aggressive tackle on Busquets. Valencia stunned Atletico Madrid with three goals in the first 13 minutes before holding on to win at Mestalla Stadium. In the runup to the game, Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo and his players criticized what they considered Atletico's physical, intimidating style of play. But it was Valencia that was the aggressor with 22 fouls to Atletico's 14, and its attack was quick to pounce on Atletico after Miranda gifted away the opener in the sixth by heading a harmless long pass into his own goal. Andre Gomes took advantage of Atletico's disconcerted defense a minute later when he dribbled by Miranda to drill a shot under Moya. Valencia kept up the pressure, and defender Nicolas Otamendi charged in to score with a powerful header from a corner kick that Paco Alcacer forced Miranda to concede with another incursion in the area. "They did a lot of damage in those 10 minutes, but I am proud of our match. Sometimes you lose in a dignified manner leaving it all on the pitch," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. Once Atletico gathered itself, Mario Mandzukic headed in a rebound. They had a perfect chance for a second goal in the 44th when Valencia's Jose Gaya handled a cross, but Diego Alves easily saved Siqueira's poorly taken spot kick. Atletico substitute Alessio Cerci was sent off in injury time with his second booking after handling the ball.

UNE: Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi will spearhead Indian challenge in World Junior Chess Championships which begins here today. After a formal inauguration ceremony at the Hyaat, the venue was abuzz with activities and the welcome note was a chessboard signed by none other than five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand who is also a brand ambassador for the championships. Gujrathi will lead the Indian challenge in the Open and Padmini Rout in the girls' championship. They pose serious threats for the more fancied players in both championships to be held simultaneously. To be played over 13rounds, the championships will be played under FIDE's Swiss rules with a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, and then 30 for the remaining game with a 30 seconds increment after every move is played. There will be participation of 51 countries and the squads are still arriving. The home support gathers around Gujrathi who finished a creditable second runner's

up in the same event last year at Kocaeli in Turkey. The Indian has been in the form of his life recently, winning the Lake Sevan Grandmasters tournament and then following it up with an inspired performance in the Abu Dhabi open in August. While Gujrathi spent his time preparing for the world junior, the other fancied Indian Grandmaster Sahaj Grover participated in the Durban Open recently where he tied for the first place. The best performance in more than a year's time would have worked as a perfect confidence booster for Grover ahead of his second last World Junior Championship. Padmini Rout will be the star attraction among Indian girls in her favourite hunting ground. In the last two attempts in Pune, Padmini has bagged the best woman player award in the Maharashtra Chess league. There is also a cash incentive for the top finishers with a total pool of Rs 600000 besides a berth for the champions in the next World Chess Cups respectively. CHESS WILL SOON BECOME MOST POPULAR SPORT AFTER CRICKET: SAHAJ NEW DELHI: Fresh from his tied first position in the recently concluded Durban Open, young Grandmaster Sahaj Grover is gearing up for the junior world championship in Pune and said that chess will soon become the most popular sport of the country after cricket. "I have a strong feeling that chess will become the most popular sport after cricket. See cricket, I believe is not just a port; it's a religion. But chess, slowly but steadily, is soon gaining ground and will really catch the imagination of one and all through proper publicity, of course," the 19year-old Delhi boy said. Now eyeing the junior world title, Sahaj looks back at following Viswanathan Anand who plays the game of chess like a champion. "Of course, I have been a Viswanathan Anand fan. People lie if they say they don't follow Anand. But I have never really had idols. I have tried to follow impact players.

ILIGURI: An acid test awaits the Indian football team as it gears up to take on higher-ranked Palestine, who are also the current AFC Challenge Cup champions, in an international friendly here today. The last time the two sides had met, in February 2013, India had squandered a 2-1 lead at the half-time to eventually go down 2-4 at the final whistle. The West Asian nation is ranked 102 in comparison to India's 158. Recollecting India's last match against Palestine in Kochi in February 2013, India coach Wim Koevermans said "Palestine are a very tough team". It's almost after a year that Team India has assembled in Siliguri. It was in last November that Team India had played back to back international friendlies against Philippines and Nepal here. National team captain Sunil Chhetri said: "The moment I heard that we were to

play in Siliguri, I remembered the huge turnout which had stretched their vocal chords for us the last time we played here. We look forward to seeing all of them at the stadium cheering for us." "It's disappointing that we had to cancel one match," Koevermans said. "We always look forward to playing strong opposition as that's the manner you improve. But now we are left with just one game and that's harsh on everyone," he added in reference to Palestine Football Federation cancelling the second international friendly on October 9 despite signing the contract to play it. Koevermans' counterpart Saeb Jundia said: "We are here to play football. We have qualified for the Asian Cup and that's a huge achievement for us. This is a preparatory match for us and we will try to utilise as many Players as possible," he said.
