orld Health Organisation (WHO) is celebrating World Health Day on Monday and the theme for this year is Food Safety. The WHO slogan for this year's theme is 'From farm to plate, make food safe' highlighting the need to make food safe for consumption. Dr. Roshan Ansari, Dietician at Kalsekar Hospital, Mumbra said, “Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent forborne illness. This includes a number of routines that should be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards.” Dr. Pradeep Gadge, Consultant Diabetologist at Shrey Diabetes Centre, Borivili felt adulteration of food is an important issue. “Adulteration of milk is very common. Consumption of such milk will lead to multiple health hazards especially in the diabetic and blood pressure patients. Kidney patients and blood pressure patients suffer serious consequences due to the salt content of such adulterated milk.” Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean at KEM
Hospital recommends citizens to not eat food made on the streets. “Food made on the streets are usually stored for a long time and they also become cold thus making them susceptible to attracting viruses. It’s better if citizens eat food that is prepared in front of them and is warm. They should also clean their hands before eating anything,” said Dr. Supe. This year Godrej HIT, a home in-
secticide manufacturer is associating with the Mumbai Dabbawalas to spread awareness regarding cockroaches that spread diseases through food. Mr. Ajay Dang, EVP Marketing, Home Care, Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GPCL), said, “We will be associating with the Dabbawallas on World Health Day to reach out to 100,000 homes to educate people on the threat that cockroaches pose to our children
and family’s health by contaminating our food throughout the year.” Dr. Rajkumar Choudhury, Honorary Secretary of Association of Hospitals feels that regular health tests should be done along with taking precautions for food safety. “On the occasion of World Health Day, AOH aims to focus on increasing the awareness of essential and preventive health tests which are often neglected. Because of an increasingly stressful working environment, people have no time for regular health check-ups. These tests should be done only on the advice of a physician,” said Dr. Choudhury. In the early 2008, an outbreak of avian influenza in Bangalore, India, led to an import ban of Indian poultry products in the Middle East, resulting in losses of hundreds of thousands of US Dollars to the Indian economy. Also last year on August 15, Mumbai doctors and UP students were admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Hospital for food poisoning as they ate sweets given to them to celebrate Independance Day. Thus it’s imperative that India takes steps to ensure food safety for its citizens.
Precautions to be taken: 1. Travellers should avoid potentially contaminated food and drink 2. Should always eat cooked food 3. Should wash hands before eating food 4. Should avoid eating street food especially in rainy season
WHO’s Food borne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) figures, from 2010, show that: 1. There were an estimated 582 million cases of 22 different food borne diseases and 351 000 associated deaths 2. The disease agents responsible for most deaths were Salmonella Typhi (52 000 deaths), enteropathogenic E. coli (37 000) and norovirus (35 000) 3. The African region recorded the highest disease burden for food borne disease, followed by South-East Asia 4. Over 40% people suffering from diseases caused by contaminated food were children aged under 5 years

nurse refused to speak with us,” said Dr. Merchant. He further said, “We haven't received any written complaint from the victim. We also cannot take any further action against the accused since he isn't an employee of the hospital,” said Dr. Merchant. He wanted that the nurses' union stop their protest as it was harming the patients. “When such protests are held, the patients are the losers. We also want to inform the nurses that there are many patients who come from slum areas. They might behave in a unruly manner with the staff but we will provide adequate security for them to prevent any such incidents from happening,” said Dr. Merchant.

Two recent incidents of molestation and assault sparks fury, leading to the stir
N
urses at Sion hospital held a protest on Monday against the hospital authorities for their alleged negligence in two incidents that took place on the premises. The nurses were demanding better security for their fellow colleagues to avoid any harmful incidents in the future. Around 100 nurses participated in the protest. The nurses shoutedslogans like 'Gundagiri nahi chalegi' and 'Mahilla ko suraksha do' while trying to enter the Dean's office. Police had gathered outside the office along with female officers to prevent the nurses from creating any chaos. The nurses also threatening to call a strike if their demands were not met. According to Vishal Jadav, a human rights activist and a staff member, two incidents took place in the hospital. “One incident happened on March 26 this year in which a 48-year-old nurse was allegedly sexually harassed by the relative of a patient. The nurse and the 27-year-old accused had gotten into a scuffle after which the accused molested her. The nurse filed a police complaint and the accused was arrested soon,” said Jadav. But the nurse later asked hospital authorities to provide security to prevent any further incidents. “But the hospital authorities didn't reply to her query for eight days. Therefore, the nurses came together to protest,” said Jadav. Jadav also explained about another incident. “On March 4, a 28year-old servant was attacked by

in the molestation case was given bail. Dr. Suleman Merchant, Sion Hospital Dean, explained that they had done their best to ensure safety of their staff.
“We were informed regarding the incident and the first action we took was to inform the police who later arrested the miscreant. We also wanted to have a discussion with the nurse who was assaulted but the

100-yr-old Japanese woman sets swimming record
Sushil Kadam | ADC
TOKYO: A 100-year-old Japanese woman has become the world's first centenarian to complete a 1,500-metre freestyle swim. Mieko Nagaoka, from Yamaguchi Prefecture, took just under an hour and 16 minutes to finish the race in a 25-meter pool. She was the sole competitor in the 100 - 104-year-old category at a short course pool in Ehime, western Japan on Saturday. Her time is expected to be recognised by Guinness World Records after she submits an application to the international
swimming federation, Japan Times reported. Nagaoka began swimming at the age of 80 as part of rehabilitation for her hurt knee. At that time, she could barely swim. "I want to swim until I turn 105 if I can live that long," Nagaoka said. Nagaoka, who published a book last year entitled "I'm 100 years old and the world's best active swimmer". Last year, Nagaoka had completed a 1,500-meter swim in a 50-meter pool in the women's
freestyle category. Nagaoka is one of the growing number of elderly Japanese who are enjoying longer and healthier lives as the country ages.
Effects of smoking may be seen in unborn babies
LONDON: The harmful effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy may be reflected in the facial movements of babies in the womb, according to researchers who studied 4-D ultrasound scans of foetuses. Researchers at Durham and
SRK in Town....! A day after politicallyaffiliated unions attempted to stop actor Shah Rukh Khan's shoot at the Mehboob Studio, the actor dressed in brown shirt and blue denim jeans was busy shooting for the film 'Fan' at Jer Mahal near Metro Cinema in Dhobi Talao on Monday.
Lancaster universities said the findings of their pilot study added weight to existing evidence that smoking is harmful to foetuses and warranted further investigation. Observing 4-D ultrasound scans, the researchers found that foetuses whose mothers were smokers showed a significantly higher rate of mouth movements than the normal declining rate of movements expected in a foetus during pregnancy. The researchers suggested that the reason for this might be that the foetal central nervous system, which controls movements in general and facial movements in particular did not develop at the same rate and in the same manner as in foetuses of mothers who did not smoke during pregnancy. Previous studies have reported a delay in relation to speech processing abilities in infants exposed to smoking during pregnancy, the researchers added. The researchers observed 80 4D ultrasound scans of 20 foetuses, to assess subtle mouth and touch movements. Scans were taken at four different intervals between 24 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Four of the foetuses belonged to mothers who smoked an average of 14 cigarettes per day, while the remaining 16 foetuses were being carried by mothers who were nonsmokers. All foetuses were clinically assessed and were healthy when born. In common with other studies, the research also showed that maternal stress and depression have a significant impact on foetal movements, but that the increase in mouth and touch movements was even higher in babies whose mothers smoked.

Three-member body to review DP of Mumbai T
he Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday announced that the threemember committee headed by the Chief Secretary will review the Development Plan (DP) for Mumbai. Against the backdrop of strong objections raised about this the CM also pointed out that the preliminary report of the committee will be submitted before the end of the legislative session on April 10. Fadnavis also made it clear that a special audit will be conducted by CAG into the Mono and Metro rail projects to check if Reliance's claim regarding the tariff is correct or not. While replying to a debate on issues concerning Mumbai in the Assembly, Fadnavis said, “ The government has been inundated with complaints against the DP, espe-
cially existing land use (ELU), reservation and floor space index (FSI). The time-frame of 60 days given for suggestions and objections is ending soon. So the government has to go for limited intervention. But the government has no plans to take over the work of preparation of DP from the municipal corporation”. “The three-member committee headed by the Chief Secretary will have Urban Development Principal Secretary and Director, Town Planning as a member. The committee will scrutinise the complaints regarding ELU, whether the process had been done appropriately and whether there is need to restart the process again if gross irregularities are seen. The state government is committed to develop Mumbai as Mumbai and not Shanghai or Singapore,” he added further.
“Out of the 14,000 cessed buildings in the island city of Mumbai, redevelopment work in 5,000 such structures is on. If there is no progress in the redevelopment work for more than three years, the developer's NOC will be scrapped and MHADA would step in,” the CM made it clear. Fadnavis further stated that the new housing policy will have a focus on affordable housing by creating more housing stock in low income and middle-income groups which will be finalised by the first week of May. The development control (DC) rules will be amended, in which provision for five lakh houses to be constructed in MHADA layouts will be made. Referring to the issues of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Fadnavis further said that the CIDCO will construct 55,000 low-cost housing stock.

fter the much talked about custodial death at Malwani police station, the Wadala TT police avoided what may have been another custodial death. On Sunday, Nasir Nisar Khan (49) alias Bagga was arrested by the Wadala TT police as he and his son were involved in a fight with a group of people. The police while patrolling saw Nasir and his son fighting with a group. The police arrested Nasir and his son Sultan Nisar Khan (20) at around 1.30 am on Sunday night and filed a non-cognisable report against both of them. Senior Police Inspector (SPI) Suhas Sampatrao Garud, Wadala TT told the ADC, “We arrested Bagga and his son on Sunday night as they were fighting with some people. Both of them were drunk. Bagga is involved in
many cases, he has a criminal record and was also externed from the city. During the detention on Sunday night he said that he wanted to go the washroom, but instead of going to the washroom he went to the detention room and tried to hang himself from the ceiling fan of the detention room with his belt and shirt. After a while when the on duty officers realised that he didn't come back from the washroom, they started looking for him. They found the door of the detention room locked from inside. They managed to open the door and got him down.” Talking about Bagga's condition SPI Garud said, “He was immediately taken to the Sion hospital, but his condition is stable. He wasn't serious and there was no mark on his neck also.” But the relatives of Bagga had a different story to tell. His son Sultan, who was also arrested with his father said, “There was no fight as such, it was just a small tiff. In fact the other party also didn't want to file any complaint. But the police forced them to file the complaint. The police
mentally tortured my father. I am an engineering student of Rustomji college and had my exam on Monday. My father asked the police to let me go because it was the question of my education. But the on duty police officer, Inspector Kotkar taunted my father by saying that what will your son do with an engineering degree, ask him to get a criminal degree. Police Inspector (PI) Kotkar took my father to the detention room and said something to him. My father was mentally tortured to such an extent that he decided to take his life. Police didn't save my father. It was me and my mother and other relatives who opened the door and got him down. His condition was bad and there were marks all over his neck.” Zubeda Nisar Khan (42), Bagga's wife said, “I am involved with some of the NGOs, one of them is Spark Mahila Milan. PI Kotkar has a grudge against me because whenever our NGO used to approach police with issues, Kotkar used to ask for bribe which I never gave, and that is why he took revenge through my husband.”

he Bandra Railway Protection Force (RPF) yesterday nabbed 25-year-old Jamin Ahmed who allegedly used to pose as a tout outside the railway reservation counter and con gullible victims. Ahmed was nabbed after a lady filed a written complaint stating that a man assured her of providing a ticket to Junagar and never showed up after taking Rs 1,100 from her. Ahmed would keep a watch for long-distance mail train commuters standing in long queues. He would then approach them and take their money assuring them that he will provide them confirmed tickets, following which he
would vanish with the money. The Bandra RPF was looking high and low for him for a week and was only able to catch him when he tried to con more passengers near the reservation counter. Head constable Ajay Singh Pal from the Bandra RPF said, “We were able to nab him only after seeing the CCTV footages. We were hunting for him from a very long time,
but were not able to find him. However, he arrived again at the reservation window in order to trick more commuters and that is when we caught hold of him. We have sent him to the Nirmal Nagar police station for further action. He was caught after a formal complaint was lodged against him. I request all passengers to come forward and report such crimes.”

The feisty Std. VII student will swim from Alibaug to Gateway of India By Suresh Golani
S
wimming 36 kilometres in the open sea is a daunting task, but this 14-year-old lad not only aims at achieving this feat but also intends to beat the existing record. A class VII student of Harmony Public School in Kharghar, Ashish Kadam (14) is a teenager with a mission to take up new challenges in long-distance swimming. At about 1 am on April 8 (Thursday), Ashish will start negotiating the waves of the Arabian Sea from Dharamtar in Alibaug to the Gateway of India, attempting to cover the 36 km stretch in record
Ashish Kadam time. The swimming event is being held under the aegis of the Open Waters Sea Swimming Club of India. Coached by Sanket Sawant, long distance swimming is not new to Ashish who has not only bagged the silver medal in the Star Fish swimming contest from Thane but has also swam from Elephanta to Mandva
Jetty in a time of 6.1 hours. Juggling between gruelling practice sessions and routine studies, strict dietary regimes and a lot of conviction- this is how the youngster says he prepares to fulfill and conquer his dreams which will not end here, as he has many more records for the future in his sight.

Alert locals thwart illegal water connection bid in Bhayandar By Suresh Golani
E
ven as existing users in the twin-city continue to reel under an acute water crisis, corrupt elements in the water supply wing of the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) seem determined to further aggravate the situation for their selfish monetary gains. This was exposed when alert residents of Sai Darshan Building in the Narmada Nagar area of Bhayandar (East) foiled an apparent bid of providing illegal water connections to a nearby complex. After spotting digging-up activities being undertaken under the pretext of pipeline
repairs, the residents confronted the workers who failed to give satisfactory replies. Sensing something fishy, the residents informed the MBMC. However civic officials instead of swinging into action and registering a FIR against those involved, chose to give out stereotype replies that engineers had been sent to verify the complaint. "It is a serious matter and we will investigate to get to the bottom of this,” said Executive Engineer Suresh Vakode. With water supply infrastructure in the twin-city under huge pressure, the MBMC had banned the issuance of new water connections since 2011.
he Palghar unit of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday arrested two officials attached to the education department of the Zilla Parishad (ZP) for accepting Rs.8,000 as bribe from the husband of a primary school teacher to process her transfer application. According to the ACB, the complainant had approached the ZP education department seeking the transfer of his wife who teaches in the local primary school and is physically challenged. However the accused duo identified as Kailash Chavhan and Vyankat Togare, demanded
Rs.8,000 as bribe to process the application. The aggrieved complainant lodged a complaint with the Palghar unit of the ACB. Subsequently a team led by Police Inspector Vaishali Pawar under the supervision
of Dy.SP Ajay Afle laid a trap and caught the duo red handed while accepting the bribe amount at about 5 pm on Monday. Both have been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Ponder awhile... “Corruption is worse than prostitution. The latter might endanger morals of an individual, the former invariably endangers morals of the entire country.” — Karl Kraus
Transfer of honest officer — 46 times A
RE all political parties corrupt? According to Anna Hazare, there is nothing to choose between political parties: they are all corrupt. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the corrupt Congress in the last elections. Across the country, it was believed that the Congress was tainted with corruption. The BJP used this perception to the fullest extent possible and defeated the Congress. Corruption in the Congress had become public knowledge and Narendra Modi was able to get a massive mandate. Is the current ruling party corrupt? The moment it takes over rule, political party becomes corrupt. Is it a fact that it is impossible for a ruling party to remain clean? Instances of corruption in BJP rule have surfaced in some of the states. In Haryana, for instance, Ashok Khemka a honest IAS officer has been transferred from the transport department. He is said to have discovered corrupt practices: He promptly initiated action against some culprits who are reportedly have close contact with the BJP government. Ashok Khemka, the inconvenient officer got the transfer order. The BJP government has done exactly what the previous Congress did. Ashok Khemka can claim to have the distinction of being transferred as many as 46 times. He holds a record in this record; someone must help him get the Guinness record. The BJP has done exactly what the Congress has done. Is it a fact that all political parties are the same with regard to the action they take to fight honest officers?

T is a travesty of justice. The court has let off all the 16 policemen, belonging to the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) of Uttar Pradesh on the lack of evidence. It was dark and it was difficult to determine who from among the policemen fired at whom, says the court. Apparently, no real hard work was done to conduct the inquiry and fix responsibility. Yet how were the 16 accused separated from the rest in the first instance? Some criteria would have been adopted to reach the verdict. In fact, the happening reminded one of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedies. At that time, the British officers blocked the only route of exit and killed nearly 1,000 demonstrators demanding Independence. At Harhimpura, too, the five lanes where Muslims lived had no rear exit, so there was no escape route.
Like Jallianwala Bagh tragedies The army was also searching every house. Muslim men, old, young and children were coming on to the road with their hands raised. Women were on the rooftops, crying, begging the PAC to let go of their men. One top Army official has rightly demanded an inquiry. True, the court had to let off all the accused. The killings cannot, however, be wished away. Naturally, the people are generally appalled over the acquittal of the accused PAC personnel. The families of those killed feel let down because, if only the perpetrators had been punished, they would have got some sort of justice. By letting off the accused, without ordering a fresh probe or taking the police to task, the court may have done anything but serving the ends of justice. The case is yet another example to testify that the police do not go the whole hog in pursuing an inquiry when it comes to its own force’s involvement. If even after 28 years of investigation, the police have failed to produce before the court admissible evidence it is time to reassess the effectiveness of police. The cover up is obvious. I wish the court had commented on that. Granted the law and order is a state’s responsibility under the constitution, but the central government is equally responsible for peace in the country. It was incumbent upon New Delhi to have appointed an inquiry com-
mittee from its side so that the witnesses, who are telling the media their plight, can be asked to testify before it. The larger question that the Hashimpura episode has posed is the lack of recourse when the police drag their feet and when the accusing finger is directed at the force itself. The overall control of the Union Home Ministry has not worked effectively. State chief ministers do not care about its behests even if the same party is ruling in the state as
New experiment required It is disconcerting that things have come to such a pass. Unfortunately, even by persisting with the status quo the system is not functioning properly. A new experiment is required. The police force under the judiciary may turn out to be a better experiment with commitment than the options we have at present. If the police were put under its supervision, the force may act more independently than it is doing now. The police may find that the political interference is not there. It does amount to running away from the problem than finding a solution. But in the prevailing political climate, there is little scope for anything working independently.

MODI Government is taking all the efforts to bring people of Indian origin stranded in Yemen due to a war like situation there. In the past the Union Government brought people stranded in Saudi Arabia and now continuing their efforts to bring such people from Yemen as well. In the last nine months or so, the Union External Ministry under Sushma Swaraj speared no efforts to bring back 334 Indians evacuated from Yemen. She is doing a world of good with concerted efforts to make sure that Indian community people do not to suffer in other countries for lack of follow up and support from our side. The External Affairs Ministry confirmed the safety of people of Indian origin in Yemen and the total number of evacuees brought back to 692. Last week a writer expressed his opinion about an actress, Kangana Ranawat and that she was the wrong choice for a particular role where she would have to portray the legendary actress Meena Kumari. The very next day, there was a rebuttal from one reader. How right he was in his comments. That writer is either a paid PR representative for the Bachchans or an out-of-service journalist. Regularly, he sings paeans about the senior Bachchan and those surrounding him. Never can they do any wrong! I bet if instead of Kangana, the name of Ashwariya Rai had been nominated, his joy would have known no bounds despite the fact that Ms Rai is no actress, just a face. local metropolitan magistrate court on Monday gave "a last chance" to actor Saif Ali Khan to appear before the court on the next date of hearing in a 2012 assault case. The court had, on March 19, directed Khan to remain present on Monday as the first witness and complainant Iqbal Sharma was to depose against the actor, reports PTI. However, Khan's lawyer yesterday filed exemption application saying the actor could not make it as he was shooting abroad in an ad film. Prosecutor Wajid Sheikh objected to the application and sought issuance of warrant against Saif. Magistrate
Shankar Dabhade gave him a last chance to appear after Khan's lawyer said he will make sure the actor remained present on the next date. The court said if the actor did not come next time, a warrant may be issued against him. The next hearing would be on June 18.
Khan and his two friends -Bilal Amrohi and Shakkel Ladak — were arrested following a complaint filed by Iqbal Mir Sharma, an NRI businessman, after an alleged fight at a restaurant inside Taj Hotel here on February 22, 2012. The three were later released on bail. The court has framed charges against them under Sections 325 (assault) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code. They have pleaded innocence. According to the police, when Sharma protested the
raucous chatter of the actor and his friends, Saif allegedly threatened him and subsequently punched Sharma in the nose, fracturing it. The NRI businessman also accused Saif and his friends of hitting his father-in-law Raman Patel. Saif, on the other hand, said that Sharma made provocative statements and used abusive language against the women accompanying him (including his wife, actor Kareena Kapoor and her sister Karishma) which led to a spat.

Understanding health Do you constantly pick up the dictionary or Google a term when you’re reading about health and fitness? If so, read on as Dev Goswami & Yamini Walia explain a few common health and fitness-related terms so that you can stay better informed HealtH terms >> If you’re often left
wondering what a particular health term means, you should read our guide
When you’re reading about what diet to follow, or how certain factors affect your risk of suffering from a certain medical condition, you’re sure to stumble upon certain words and terms that may not be a part of your regular vocabulary. We get Dr. Behram Pardiwala, consultant for internal medicine at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, to explain some of the most commonly-used terms.
Water retention This is often used to explain sudden weight gain or bloating. A concept that is similar to water weight, water retention occurs when fluid accumulates in your tissues (including those in your skin) and isn’t removed like it is supposed to. You may observe a swelling on your legs or on your face. It isn’t caused by a specific medical condition, and is usually the result of hot weather, burns, hormonal imbalances or excessive salt intake.
insulin This is a very common word, and we’re sure that you are aware that it is related to diabetes. But, do you know what it actually means? Insulin is a hormone, that is secreted by your pancreas, which helps to absorb sugar from your food into your blood. You need insulin because your cells cannot absorb sugar directly in its natural form. It’s only when insulin attaches itself to sugar that it can enter the cells in your body and provide them with the energy that they need to function. If you have an excessive sugar intake, insulin helps to store the extra sugar in your liver from where it’s released when

your body is low on sugar. Simply put, insulin ensures that your sugar levels are balanced and so, helps prevent diabetes. For diabetics, measuring insulin levels helps doctors prescribe the best course of action.
Bypass surgery This one is pretty easy to understand and is exactly what it sounds like. If you suffer from a coronary heart disease where one of your arteries is either blocked or has become narrow, a surgeon will construct a new route around the blockage, helping blood to flow smoothly, and effectively bypassing the blockage.
CHroniC Chronic stress, chronic back aches, chronic allergies... the word chronic is used with several medical conditions in order to

emphasise the severity of the problem. But, what does it actually signify? Whenever chronic is used as an adjective to describe a condition, it means that you’ve been suffering from that disease for a long time. The condition has reached a stage where it is extremely difficult to cure. However, most chronic conditions can be effectively managed with the help of certain lifestyle changes and medication.
lDl, HDl & triglyCeriDes All these terms are related to cholesterol, a waxy, fat-like substance that is produced by your liver. Your body needs a certain amount of cholesterol as it helps your cells to produce hormones, vitamin D and digestive juices. Since it’s not possible for cholesterol to be dissolved in your blood, it is carried Continued on pg 14 «

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), which is known as bad cholesterol, increases plaque in your blood vessels, clogging them and making you susceptible to heart attacks or strokes. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), on the other hand, is the good cholesterol, which scavenges LDL from your body and carries it back to your liver, where it is broken down and passed out of your body. Triglycerides are another type of fat, which are not classified as a lipoprotein because they do not contain any proteins. All the excess calories, alcohol and sugar in your body is converted into triglyceride and stored in fat cells. As you can guess, high triglycerides levels pose a health risk.

Fitness terms
>> Wondering what’s the difference between a sprain and a hernia? We find out
There are certain fitness terms that you come across every day, but may be confused about. So, we spoke to Dr. Chirag Sethi, fitness and nutrition expert at Anytime Fitness Gym, who helps us understand a few common fitness-related terms.
Bmi- Body mass index Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of relative size, based on your body mass. It is calculated as your weight (in kg) divided by your height (in sq. mtr.). BMI ranges from underweight to obese and is a common measure for children and adults to predict health outcomes. The BMI trait is influenced by both genetic and non-genetic factors and provides a paradigm to understand and estimate the risk factors for certain health problems.
Basal metaBolic rate (Bmr)
>> Free radicals injure your body’s cells
Free radicals Free radicals have been getting a lot of attention lately. One of the major reasons that a diet rich in antioxidants is recommended is that it helps fight these free radicals, which are responsible for tissue damage. But, what exactly are they? Well, you know why a slice of apple turns brown, don’t you? It’s because of the reaction with oxygen — a process known as oxidation. Your cells are exposed to oxygen on a daily basis and antioxidants ensure that the oxidation that takes place in your body isn’t harmful. However, while your body is efficient at metabolising oxygen, a small amount of your cells (around 1-2%) inevitably get damaged during the process. These damaged cells are referred to as free radicals. They are ‘free’ because they miss an important molecule, which sends them on a rampage against other cells in your body. The reason they are so deadly is that they don’t kill other cells — which can easily be replaced — but damage the DNA, which makes the cells grow abnormally. These damaged cells can lead to several chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimers and Parkinson’s.
>> Before a product, make sure that you analyse the nutrition label carefully
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of calories expended by the body at relative rest — which is when you’re not exercising. The heat that your body generates can be measured in order to determine the amount of energy spent. Your BMR generally decreases with age and with the decrease in lean body mass (due to ageing). Increasing muscle mass raises BMR, although the effect is not significant enough for it to act as a weight-loss method.
muscle tone Muscle tone is the tension that is present in your muscles when they are at relative rest. There is, for the most part, no actual state of rest because your body is usually active. Both your extensor and flexor muscles are involved, helping to maintain a constant tone while at rest. This helps your skeletal muscles ensure a normal posture.
dynamic stretching Dynamic stretching is a type of stretching that utilises momentum. It’s normally performed at the start of a workout or sport session, after a general warm-up. It prepares your joints for movement and your muscles reach their extended length before beginning your workout or sport activity, which reduces your risk of suffering from an injury.
hernia, sprain or Fracture All these are common fitness-related injuries that you can suffer from. Hernia is a condition where an internal organ protrudes out of or pushes the walls of its cavity,
because the muscles that surround it are weak. A sprain is when you suffer from a tear or wrench in a ligament, which is a fibrous tissue that connects two bones. A fracture is pretty simple to understand — it’s basically a broken bone.
Body Fat percentage Your Body Fat Percentage is your total body fat (including essential and stored fat) divided by your total body weight. Body fat percentage is a measure of fitness levels, since it is the only body measurement that directly calculates a person’s relative body composition without any regard to their height.
muscle conFusion This is a misconception, which states that a change in your workout will boost your muscle growth. The fact is that muscle fibres (cells) grow on the principles of a progressive overload of resistance. It is also important to follow a diet that is designed for muscle growth and recovery, as it allows your muscles to recover from the trauma caused by the resistance or weights used during a workout. Your muscles essentially compensate for the stress by becoming bigger and stronger.
part of the body — the body minus the legs and arms. In the context of strength and conditioning, the major core muscles include the muscles of the spine and the muscles between your rib cage and hip bone.
Fat Burning zone Fat burning zone is a misleading theory that states that a person burns the most fat when they exercise at an intensity that is at 60-75% of their MHR (Maximal Heart Rate). The theory follows the assumption that this is when your body burns the most amount of fat for its energy requirements. However, the truth is that your body burns the most fat when you’re performing an exercise of the lowest intensity or when you’re resting. Your body essentially burns fat after your exercise and not during. For maximum fat burning, you need a combination of an elevated BMR, highintensity exercises and a special weight-loss diet.
core The core refers to a group of muscles that are located in the central
sculpt To sculpt is to improve your lean body mass while losing fat, with the help of resistance training or metabolic conditioning exercises. Body sculpting is a term that is used to attract female clientèle as they have a fear of becoming bulky or manly, when they hear terms such as increase in muscle mass used by trainers to describe an exercise.
read a nutrition laBel When you’re reading a nutrition label, do you get confused about what some of the terms on the label stand for? These terms are not only confusing, they can also be misleading. So, here, we help you with the correct meanings of some of the most commonly-used terms.
serving size A serving size affects the quantity of every other nutrient mentioned on the label. Nutritionist Mansi Padechia, explains, “Pay attention to the serving size, especially the amount of servings the food contains. For example, one serving of soup equals one cup, but having the entire packet may mean that you’re consuming two cups. That doubles the calories and other nutrient numbers, including the %Daily Values.”
%daily value This may confuse you, but if you look closely at the bottom of a label, you will find the %DailyValues are based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Neeraj Mehta, fitness expert and nutritionist, tells us, “Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs. %DailyValue is a standard set by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which every food product manufacturer has to follow. The nutrient values that are listed are according to this standard.”
calories Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of food. The calorie section of the label can help you manage your weight. Mansi explains, “40 calories is low, 100 calories is moderate and 400 calories or more is high.”
light A food product that has the word light in its name could mean various things. Neeraj explains, “Light could suggest a nutritionally-altered food product, which contains half the fat or one third lesser calories. It could also mean that the sodium content of a low-calorie or low-fat food has been reduced by half. Sometimes, it also describes food properties such as texture and colour.”
Free A food product usually contains fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugar and calories. Neeraj tells us, “A product that contains no amount or only minor amount of one or more of the above components, will have free printed on its label.”

Foods that are at a high risk of contamination include red meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, dairy products and raw sprouts. The most common manifestation of unhygienic food is in the form of stomach infections, but it can also have lifethreatening consequences, especially for children.
>> To avoid contamination, it’s important that food is handled safely at every stage
Food SaFety FactS Here are a few of the World Health Organisation’s facts and figures on food safety: n Over 200 diseases are spread through food. However, this doesn’t have to be the case — proper handling and preparation can prevent most food-borne diseases. n Contaminated food has a more severe effect on those who have compromised immune systems such as the sick, the elderly, children and pregnant women. n Contaminated food can cause long-term health problems. Heavy metals or naturally-occurring toxins can cause diseases such as cancer and several neurological conditions. n Harmful bacteria are developing a resistance to drug treatments — a growing global health concern as drugresistant bacteria can be transmitted to humans through food. This is attributed to the misuse (or overuse) of antimicrobials in agriculture and animal husbandry as well as in medical prescriptions. n Due to the complexity of the food chain, food can be contaminated at various stages. n The globalisation of food production complicates food safety investigation and hampers the process of product recalls when there is an emergency.
LET’S TALK ABOUT FOOD!
What the FSSaI IS The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been set up to lay down and enforce science-based standards for the food that we consume in the country. You may have noticed the organisation’s logo on practically any packaged food that you buy — from a packaged fruit juice or a packet of wafers (what we consider junk food) to easy-tomake products such as pasta. The organisation also regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food products in order to make sure that they are safe for consumption.
This year’s theme for Wold Health Day is food safety. Dev Goswami & Anindra Siqueira tell you more about the day and what you should know about it this year
T
oday, April 7, has been classified as World Health Day, in part because the World Health Organisation (WHO) was founded on this day. Every year, WHO picks an area of health as the theme for World Health Day and this year, it’s food safety. But, what does food safety mean? The term may sound vague, but it’s pretty easy to understand. According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre, food safety refers to “the conditions and practices that preserve the quality of food to prevent contamination and food-borne illnesses.” Understanding why the WHO has picked food safety as this year’s theme for
is easy once you read our facts and figures — unhygienic food and water claims several lives every year. Ensuring that your food is safe — right from the time a crop is harvested to when it’s on your plate — can reduce the risk of several diseases and illnesses. Food can become contaminated at various stages. At the farm, insecticides and pesticides introduce unwanted and potentially dangerous microorganisms into the produce. If food is not handled properly during the processing stage, it can lead to the spread of germs. At the final stage, improper handling or cooking methods can contaminate your food.

Black raspberries Berries are our favourite superfood, but black raspberry, in particular, is believed to be effective in fighting colon cancer. It’s a good idea to pick these as they have 40% more cancer-fighting antioxidants than the red variety.
Brown Rice Now, we all know that brown rice is a much healthier alternative to white rice because of its high fibre content. According to a study published in Nutrition and Cancer, people who ate brown rice at least once a week reduced their risk of developing colon polyps (growths that may lead to cancer) by 40%.
Peanuts How many of you thought that the peanut was a nut and not a legume? According to research conducted by Loma Linda University, eating legumes such as peanuts, chickpeas, black beans and peas three times a week reduces the risk of colon polyps by 33%. Also, half a cup of peanuts contains more than 6g of fibre!

10 Mostly As If you’re never in the mood, there’s a simple reason — your lifestyle! You’re stressed, probably suffer from low self-esteem and don’t get enough sleep. All of these have a direct effect on your sex drive, since they not only disturb the balance of chemicals in your body, they also negatively affect your confidence. Other factors such as an extremely busy routine and constant fights with your partner will also lower your sex drive. So, it’s important to make time for sex and to solve your relationship problems in order to boost your libido. Also, remember that excessive consumption of alcohol leads to fatigue, which makes it difficult for you to get in the mood. Mostly Bs Your lifestyle doesn’t seem to be hampering your sex drive. However, if you didn’t take this quiz for fun and actually find it hard to get in the mood, we recommend visiting a specialist. Apart from lifestyle causes, low libido is also the result of hormonal imbalances, menopause and conditions such as erectile dysfunction. Being depressed — a factor that wasn’t addressed in this quiz — can also see you lose your sex drive. So, make sure that you figure out exactly why your libido is falling in order to solve the problem.

n a long flight, we’re sure you’re preoccupied thinking about what to do with all the time on hand, how to sleep comfortably and what they’re going to serve you as part of your in-flight meal. But, between comfortably napping or flipping through the in-flight magazines, have you wondered how all these hours are affecting your skin? Improper sleep, recycled air, zero humidity and fluctuating temperatures all wreck havoc on your skin and body. We’re sure that this is not on your list of concerns, but it should be! Take our quiz to find out if all the frequent flying is affecting you. 1) Do you find yourself constantly applying and reapplying hand creams and body lotion during a flight? a) Yes. b) No. 2) Do you feel unusually dehydrated on a long flight? a) Yes. b) No. 3) Do you often catch a cold during a flight? a) Yes. b) No. 4) Do you experience dry eyes, which are Mostly As We’re sure that you’ve figured out that flying isn’t the best thing for your body by now. While there are several problems associated with it, at least you know that the zit on your face is because of the pesky airplane that you’ve spent so much time on. Make sure you’ve got all your skincare essentials in your hand luggage to arm yourself against all the damage that a flight (especially long ones) does. Make sure that you carry essentials such as a good moisturiser and cleanser, medication and fluids (check that they’re allowed on board to the country you’re
sometimes itchy and scratchy? a) Yes. b) No. 5) Just like your eyes, do you have a dry nose during a flight? a) Yes. b) No. 6) Do you experience a splitting headache once you land? a) Yes. b) No. 7) Do you experience a lot of gassiness and flatulence when you’re on a flight, even though you’re practically starving? a) Yes. b) No. 8) Does your skin get oilier, even though it feels as dry as the Sahara desert? a) Yes. b) No. 9) After a long flight, are you always left with a nasty zit on your face that wasn’t there when you boarded? a) Yes. b) No.
ON-FLIGHT ESSENTIALS STAY HYDRATED
The reason you’re so dehydrated during a flight is because there is very little or no humidity in the cabin air. And zero humidity means that your body is exposed to absolutely no moisture. If you are the sort of person who loves knocking back a few drinks on a plane, your body is at an even higher risk of getting dehydrated. Make sure that you drink plenty of fluids such as water and juices in order to keep yourself hydrated. And, if you absolutely must consume alcohol, stick to one glass of red wine.
SKIN NECESSITIES
Several airlines provide long-haul flight passengers with skincare and grooming kits that minimise the adverse effects of flying on their skin. You can use those if you want, but we suggest you carry your own hand lotions and moisturisers to hydrate your skin. Remember that your skin gets oily because poor humidity levels send your oil glands into overdrive. So, it’s important to carry a good face wash with you to cleanse your skin between flights. Apply an even layer of moisturiser on you face once you have washed it properly.
THE LITTLE THINGS
Although there is plenty of oxygen in a flight cabin, the low air pressure prevents it from being properly absorbed into your bloodstream. This can cause discomfort and leave you with a splitting headache or earache. You can’t do much about this, but if you must, take a mild painkiller and go to sleep, or carry some sweets. Take your shoes off and get comfortable because sitting in one position can make your feet swell. You may also feel a little gassy, as the low pressure during a flight can increase the air volume in your bowels. Pop over to the bathroom if you feel the need to let some air out! Carry some eye drops to prevent dry eyes and also carry a saline spray with you to help relieve a dry nose. Consult a doctor before flying if you have asthma since longhaul flights are known to aggravate the condition.
10) If you have problems such as asthma: are they aggravated during a flight? a) Yes. b) No. visiting first). This may not necessarily spare you from the effects of a long flight, but it will minimise them. Mostly Bs Okay, we’re going to assume that you’re one of those unique people who are unfazed by a long-haul flight. Or maybe you are just one of the few who complain less than we do. Either way, just because you’ve always had smooth flights, it doesn’t mean not mean that your body doesn’t require protection. Make sure that you’re properly hydrated and that you have the necessary essentials, just in case you need them.

man vs machine What’s better for your workout — exercising with free weights or using resistance machines? Anindra Siqueira talks to a fitness expert to find out
F
ree weights and resistance machines serve slightly different purposes when it comes to exercising. And, if you’re serious about your fitness routine, you may have wondered what’s so special about the two and what suits your workout better. Read on to find out more. Ideally, each of the two serve their own purpose. Both free weights and resistance machines have their advantages and drawbacks. Free weights are inexpensive and you can find them at just about any sports store. If you want to use resistance machines, you’ll most likely have to be enrolled into a gym. The main difference between the two is that free weights (as the name suggests) allow you to move in three directions — two horizontal and one vertical. A range of motions helps to improve your strength as well as target several muscle groups at once. This is less restrictive and is how your body moves naturally. Dr. Chirag Sethi, fitness and nutrition expert at Anytime Fitness Gym, tells us, “Free weights are perfected by people who have at least three months of fitness experience. They are also recommended for people who have individual differences in each limb. If you have limited time to train but want to accomplish a lot with just a few exercises, then free weights are the way to go.” Resistance machines, on the other hand, are more restrictive in the range of movements that they allow — a single machine will guide you through a specific range of motions, which are ideal if you’re a beginner or if you’re getting back to fitness after an injury. These machines allow you to target specific muscle groups.
benefits. A good idea is to start your workout by doing one or more multi-joint, compound exercises such as squats, dead lifts or bench presses and then use machines to strengthen specific muscles to create the physique that you want.
What to keep in mind BeFoRe YoU BeGin WoRkinG oUt Working out strains your body, and if it’s performed incorrectly, it can result in injury. Dr. Chirag suggests a few precautions that you should bear in mind while working out with free weights and resistance machines.
Free weights Most injuries involving free weights occur because the weights are dropped. Dr. Chirag suggests paying extra attention while picking up and putting down weights. Focusing on your technique is also important. “Safety precautions include maintaining a good grip, ensuring a stable sitting or standing posture, using good technique or form and taking proper instruction from an exercise professional,” he says. Dr. Chirag explains, “Resistance training is best suited to beginners. Some machines allow you to put on extra weight without the risk of injury. This may also be useful if you are pressing or squatting without a spotter.” So, what should you use if you simply want to stay fit? Dr. Chirag explains that it’s always better to incorporate both free weights and resistance training into your workout in order to derive the maximum
Resistance machines Dr. Chirag explains that you should maintain proper body alignment while using resistance machines in order to minimise the risk of injury. And, since these machines target specific muscle groups, it’s easy to ignore certain crucial muscles. This can cause injuries while performing daily tasks because your stabilising muscles aren’t exercised in the correct proportions.

summertime
>> Our tips will help prep your body for the summer months
safety The sudden increase in temperature is definitely one of the downsides to summer, putting you at risk of more than just exhaustion or excessive sweating. Dev Goswami brings you a guide that will help you prep your body for the heat
E
xtreme heat can do more than just tire you out. A sudden rise in temperature can not only make you ill; it can also put you at risk of suffering from a heat stroke. While you don’t need to make drastic changes to your lifestyle in order to stay safe during summer, minor adjustments can go a long way in ensuring that your body reserves the heat. Take a look at what you should do.
Eat lEss, but kEEp it frEsh The more you eat, the higher your body temperature is going to be, since the process of digestion increases your body heat. So, instead of having 3-4 large meals, eat small meals approximately every two hours. When you’re deciding what to eat, pick fresh fruits and vegetables as much as possible. Salads, cold soups and smoothies are great picks too. They not only keep you healthy, but also lighten the load on your digestive system.
ChangE is your EnEmy The idea of standing right under the draft of an air-conditioner may sound tempting when you’ve just come in from the sun, but extreme temperature fluctuations do more harm than good. You may feel better, but you will be drying your skin out and putting yourself at risk of suffering from the flu and common cold. It’s a better idea to sit still for a while and allow your body to cool down on its own (drinking water will help speed up the process) and then move into an airconditioned environment.
hidE from thE hEatstrokEs Those who have never suffered from a heatstroke will not understand how
frightening and dangerous the experience can be. But, if you’re prone to suffering from heatstrokes, you need to be extra careful during summer. Stay indoors during the hottest time of the day and make sure that you drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated. Remember that your body may take a while to get used to the extreme heat and so, you should limit the time that you spend out in the sun until you start to feel comfortable. Also, make sure that you wear lightweight clothing that keeps you cool during hot weather.
ExposE yoursElf to thE sun This may sound counterproductive, but exposing yourself to the sun can actually help your body get used to the heat faster. Ignore this tip if you’re prone to suffering from heatstrokes. However, if you aren’t, then stepping out in the sun (except between 11am-4 pm) will make it easier for you to get through summer — which in a city like ours, can last for pretty long.
switCh up your workout Exercising during summers may not sound tempting, but it’s important, because if you stop working out, the effect of all your hard work through the year will go to waste. At the same time, working out when it’s too hot is not a good idea. Choose a time early in the morning or late evening, when it’s relatively cooler. Remember to hydrate yourself and wear appropriate clothing that will keep your body cool. If your workout is intense, it’s a good idea to exercise with a friend so that he/she can help you if you have an adverse reaction to the heat.
ExpErt tips on working out in thE hEat “Drink plenty of fluids as it’s important to stay hydrated. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. So, you should drink water even before you feel the need to. Replace lost sodium by drinking an electrolyte solution or a sports drink. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes that allow your skin to breathe — cotton is always a good choice. If your activity usually makes you sweat a lot, wear clothing that is designed to wick the sweat away. Deflect sun with white or light colours and wear a hat to protect your head. Begin your exercise regimen slowly and gradually. Stay cool and calm and make sure that you have plenty of time
to relax in between. Remember to wear sunscreen — even if you exercise early in the morning or late in the evening; if the sun’s rays can reach you, you could get sunburnt. One of the best ways to cool down is by using essential oils. Dabbing a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil on the back of your neck and near your temples just before your workout will help you stay cool and also open up your nasal passages, making it easier for you to breathe when the air is humid.” — Althea Shah, fitness expert and VP (marketing), Gold’s Gym India

omen are born with a finite number of eggs and so as they get older, the number and quality of eggs diminishes. As a result, the chances of having a baby, decrease by at least 3% once you turn 30-years-old and even more after you are 40-years-old. Dr. Bandita Sinha, gynaecologist and obstetrician at Fortis Hospital & Clinic, tells us, “The chromosomal abnormal embryos have a low rate of implantation in the mother’s uterus, leading to miscarriages. If an abnormal embryo is implanted, the pregnancy may still result in miscarriage or the birth of a baby with physical problems, developmental delay or mental retardation.” The most common causes of infertility include ovulation disorders, uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockages, primary ovarian insufficiencies,
endometriosis and pelvic adhesions. For men, on the other hand, a low sperm count is the leading cause of infertility. Dr. Bandita explains, “The normal sperm count in males is around 40 to 60 million sperms per millilitre of semen. If the count is less than 20 million per millilitre of semen or if the sperm movement is very poor, then we conclude that to be the cause of infertility.” Long working hours, proactive thinking, being stressed about meeting a deadline at work and an unhealthy diet are also responsible for the growth of infertility cases in India. Dr. Bandita tells us, “Severe or prolonged emotional stress may contribute to the situation. An inability to conceive in itself can cause create further stress, leading to a Catch-22 situation. Deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin C, selenium zinc and folic acid can also increase your risk of becoming infertile.”

Dear Barbara, I think I may have a fungal infection in my underarms. A few weeks ago, my underarms began to itch incessantly, and it still hasn’t subsided. The skin around the area has also turned red and flaky. When it started, I thought it was a mild problem and asked my pharmacist for a solution. He told me that a standard fungal infection cream with clotrimazole would work. However, after applying the cream the itching sensation got worse. What should I do? — irfan Damani, tadwadi Dear irfan, Due to the change in weather, we think that you may have developed a fungal infection in your underarms. It is quite common to develop an infection in warm areas on your body such as your underarms, groin or between your toes. Apply a good antifungal powder to such areas every day and avoid self diagnosis. Instead of your local chemist, you should have consulted a dermatologist, who would be able to prescribe you with the right medication for your condition. Also, since you say that your condition was aggravated by the clotrimazole cream, it’s possible that you are allergic to it. Let your doctor know and do not delay treatment.
unconventional lift Over the years, acupuncture has gained popularity for its ability to solve a host of skin and health issues. But, can it also serve as an anti-ageing solution? Sara Shah finds out
I >> If your underarms itch constantly, you may have developed a fungal infection Dear Barbara, I love experimenting with beauty products! Whether it’s new skincare products or a recently launched makeup brand, I need to get my hands on it. I recently bought foundation from a brand that was launched a couple of months ago, but using it led to some serious rash and pimple outbreaks. This sort of thing has never happened to me before and I have no clue how to solve the problem. The pimples have left behind scars and are extremely slow to heal. What do I do? — Camilla D’souza, Bandra (w) Dear Camilla, Yes, makeup can be quite hard to resist, but it’s always good to give your skin a break from all the chemicals. Go a few days without makeup and your skin will thank you. As for your outbreaks, it could be due to the way your skin reacted with a certain ingredient in the product. So, avoid using it again. It could also be that the products you are using are not of good quality. Invest in good quality products and stick to them! Also ensure that the brushes that you use are clean. Remember to wash them every week and store them in a clean place that is free from dust.
s there any end to the list of procedures that are supposed to defy the process of ageing? We don’t think so. We’ve just found out about a new one to add to the list — acupuncture. A form of ancient Chinese medicine that originated two centuries ago, it has been used to treat numerous physical problems such as back aches and migraines. But, did you know that the technique can also provide your skin with an age defying lift and help it to look younger? The procedure, which involves sticking close to a hundred needles in your body, isn’t a conventional anti-ageing solution, but over the years, people have warmed up to it.
>> The acupuncture facelift procedure is quite painless
the Claims Ever since this epiphany of sorts, acupuncturists over the world have claimed that just ten sessions of acupuncture will be enough for you to start seeing benefits. It is believed to help lighten your skin and reduces the number of wrinkles you develop. It is also claimed that cosmetic acupuncture works to erase fine lines, fight saggy skin and clear up age spots.
how it worKs Cosmetic acupuncture is not very different from standard acupuncture. Around 30-40 ultra thin-needles are inserted into your face, which then work to free up energy in your body and stimulate blood circulation in your face. This in turn boosts the production of collagen and elastin, both of which help to plump up your skin. Most
acupuncturists perform this procedure on the entire body, which promotes an overall health boost.
and not just your face, you can expect benefits that include improvement in digestion and metabolism.

Cosmetic acupuncture is a great alternative for those who want to get a facelift but are wary of the after-effects of surgical facelifts such as Botox, which can lead to scarring that takes a lifetime to heal. However, it’s important to remember that cosmetic acupuncture is a very slow process. As we mentioned earlier, you will only see results after several sessions. Apart from boosting blood circulation, regular acupuncture also improves cell reproduction and growth. And, since the procedure is done on your entire body
Cosmetic acupuncture is not a complete replacement for Botox or other surgical facelifts. Even though it make your skin appear more youthful and doesn’t have major side-effects, you’re not going to end up looking like you did in your 20s. However, even though it sounds painful, it is actually painless. You will only feel a slight tingling sensation under your skin. Also, while you won’t be able to see results in a single session, one session will be enough to help you notice a subtle improvement in your complexion.

Resolving to unleash a 'tsunami' of services, RSS on Monday said lakhs of people will be brought within the ambit of its various social service organisations over the next five years without exercising "untouchability". "It is one thing to serve in the tsunami but India needs a tsunami of services, we have to work like that," RSS joint general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said on the concluding day of a three-day conclave organised by Rashtriya Sewa Bharati, an umbrella organisation that supports nearly 700 organisations involved in social work.
EIJING: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will do a repeat of his Madison Square Garden act during his next month's visit to China that will make him the first Indian leader to address the communist nation's burgeoning Indian community, whose numbers have swelled to 45,000. As diplomats held hectic consultations to work out a wide agenda for his high-profile visit, Indian associations in different Chinese cities sent out invites to their members asking them to be ready to assemble in Shanghai to take part in the meeting with the Prime Minister to be held in the second or third week of May, reports PTI. Going by the invites, the event has been modelled on the ones addressed by Modi at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden and Allphones Arena in Sydney that made waves in India and around the world. He is also expected to address a similar event in Toronto next week during the third and final leg of his three-nation tour to France, Germany and Canada. It is perhaps a novel effort by an Indian Prime Minister to attempt the same in China as the numbers of the Indian professionals and businessmen were on a steady rise in the dragon country regarded as hostile for decades after the 1962 war. According to an official estimate prepared during the February visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, about 45,000 Indians currently work and reside in China.
PM Narendra Modi addresses at the inauguration ceremony of the two-day Conference of State Environment and Forest Ministers in New Delhi on Monday. Though this will be Modi's first visit as Prime Minister, he is a familiar figure in China as he made several visits here as Chief Minister of Gujarat to study the Chinese developmental model and to scout for investments from the world's second largest economy. Modi's May visit will have several new facets, especially the Hometown Diplomacy as he would travel to Chinese President Xi Jinping's home province Shaanxi. Xi was expected to host Modi in the city of Terracotta Warriors in a reciprocal gesture to the latter hosting him in Gujarat during the Chinese
leader's India visit in September last year. Pictures of Xi and Modi sitting in a swing in Ahmedabad and the two operating 'charkha', the spinning wheel, at Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram figure prominently in the Chinese official media highlighting Xi's visit abroad. The picture of Xi along with his celebrity singer wife Peng Liyuan sitting in the Gujarati swing also made waves in China's popular internet media. In a rare gesture, Xi wants to host a similar cultural event for Modi, showcasing historic past of Shaanxi's capital Xian, especially its links with India, as famous Buddhist monk Xuan Zang, who travelled to India 2,000 years ago and brought Buddhism to China, spent his final years there. Xian houses the Wild Goose Pagoda, built to highlight Xuan Zang's efforts to visit India in 645 AD through the ancient Silk Road. The monk returned home after a 17 year-long sojourn with precious Buddhist scriptures. Besides, the city also formed part of the centre of Xi's mega Silk Road plan as it was declared origin for China's strategic project. Though officials are tight-lipped about the programme, Modi was expected to travel to Xian like the way Xi landed in Ahmedabad starting his India visit. After that, Modi is expected to travel to Beijing where he would hold talks with the Chinese leadership on a host of issues, including the border dispute, address Chinese investors and later travel to Shanghai to address the Indian community besides meeting local leaders.

The deadliest of the attacks in three hours took place in Amshipora village in Shopian district of south Kashmir in which three policemen were killed by the ultras, reports PTI. The attacks came on a day when Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed opened the Tulip garden on the banks of the Dal lake expressing the hope that the Valley would see a bumper tourist season this year and to make the numbers "unprecedented". By A Business Reporter
T
he RBI will be announcing its first bi-monthly monthly policy for FY16 today. This will be against a background of stronger economic fundamentals relative to a year ago levels. More particularly, market sentiments are improved with a higher GDP growth expectation in FY15 of 7.4% relative to 6.9% in FY14 juxtaposed with a lower CPI inflation of 5.4% as of February ’15, which is well within RBI’s targeted range of 6% by January ‘16. However, says Care Ratings “We do not expect any change in the policy rates this time. The overriding concern today is the possibility of inflation rising given the unseasonal rains and its potential impact on inflation. With liquidity fairly comfortable in the slack season and the government borrowing as per the conventional path, it is felt that
the existing liquidity can address any demand emanating from the coal and telecom auction financial requirements”. Care believes“No policy change is expected on the 7th of April ‘15 and if at all the reserve ratios are lowered it will be more to placate the markets. It is unlikely to have an impact on lending rates of banks which will be guided still by the repo policy action of the RBI”. It justifies its views by saying “The overall liquidity conditions have been relatively easy during FY15 with a low pick up in credit. Growth in credit was very low at 9.5% compared with 13.9% in FY14. Growth in deposits was also muted at 11.4% compared with 14.1% last year. The RBI would be looking at both these numbers closely because if growth has to be met at levels of a little over 8% on a sustained basis, there has to be a significant recovery in both these variables”.
The options for RBI include lowering the repo rate to make it easier to borrow: The RBI has lowered the interest rate by 50 bps on the policy side since January. However, RBI data shows that while the range of interest rates on deposits of above 1 year has come down from 8-9.25% to 8-8.75%, the base rate remains unchanged at 10-10.25%. The transmission to lending rates has been sluggish even in the past. However, given that the unseasonal rains have destroyed a significant proportion of the rabi crop – especially wheat, mustard and pulses, the impact on inflation could be negative. The RBI will probably wait for some more data points before lowering rates. Besides, the last two changes in interest rates were made outside the policy. Hence, there is reason to believe that the repo rate will not be cut this time. As regards a CRR cut: the CRR is
presently at 4% and the justification for a reduction is that it will add liquidity to the system and enable banks to lower rates. Half percent cut in CRR can add Rs 40-45,000 Cr. to the banking system. However, with demand for credit not likely to pick up immediately any such cut will mean deployment of these resources into GSecs auctions and will hence not really add to the credit process. Additionally, the first half of the year is also typically the slack season when there is less demand for credit. Therefore, reducing the CRR at this time, though useful for banks may not lead to an increase in credit. At best it may support growth in bank credit to the extent of the demand that may emanate from corporates with respect to the telecom and coal auctions. Similarly, regarding an SLR cut: The reason for having a SLR cut
could be to increase liquidity in the system. But given that the SLR held today is 27%, any reduction from 21.5% will only help those banks at the margin in the LAF market who are on the borderline. We do not expect a cut in the SLR this time and if done, could be interpreted more in terms of moving towards the long term goal of 20%. The RBI last year had moved away from the tradition of targeting growth in money supply, deposits and credit and hence there may be no indication on these variables. GDP growth target is likely to be in the range of 8% for the year. The government’s borrowing programme of Rs 6 lakh Cr. is to have 60% in the first half which is again along the trend path. Hence, there would be no major pressure on the system on this score. In FY15, the gross borrowings were Rs 5.92 lakh Cr. as against Rs 5.635 lakh Cr. in FY14.
Unseasonal Rains To Push CPI Inflation To 6% In Q2 2015, Says Nomura 32 PSU Firms Have By A Business Reporter
I
nflation momentum is likely to increase in the coming months largely due to unseasonal rains which could push CPI inflation to nearly 6% in next three months, says a Nomura report. According to the global financial services firm, although transitory, inflation momentum is expected to rise in the next three months. "We estimate that unseasonal rains could push CPI inflation close to 6% in second quarter of 2015
(April-June period), versus our current estimate of 5.2%, indicating a transitory shock of 80 bps on CPI inflation," Nomura India Chief Economist Sonal Varma said in a note. While on-the-ground prices in March were contained and are not yet a significant cause for inflation concern, the past four episodes of unseasonal rain suggest that there are upside risks to food inflation, and therefore CPI inflation, in the next three months, Varma added. According to the Ministry of Agri-
culture's initial assessment, the recent spate of rains damaged around 10.7 mn hectares of land, which comprises about 18% of the total winter (rabi) crop area sown. The Japanese brokerage firm said this rise in inflation momentum is "transitory", and accordingly should not be a source of too much concern for the RBI, "although some short-term caution is warranted in order to keep inflation expectations anchored," it said. The retail inflation rose to 5.37% in February on higher prices of
food items, including vegetables and beverages. Meanwhile, inflation measured on wholesale price index (WPI) was at (-) 0.39% in January, (-) 0.50% in December and (-) 0.17% in November, respectively. With inflation dropping to record lows, industry is demanding further easing of interest rates to boost growth. Last month, the Reserve Bank had surprised markets by reducing the benchmark interest rate by 0.25% to 7.5%. The RBI is scheduled to announce its bi-monthly policy statement today.
Mid-Size Firms See Biggest Gain In Credit Quality By A Business Reporter
A
n analysis of rating actions during the second half of the just-concluded fiscal by CRISIL shows a significant improvement in the credit quality of mid-sized firms (operating revenues Rs.1-5 billion). Their credit ratio – upgrades to downgrades – stood at 2.26 for the six months to March 31, 2015, compared with 1.55 for small-sized (operating revenues under Rs.1 billion) and 2 times for large-sized firms (operating revenues
over Rs.5 billion). Says Pawan Agrawal, Chief Analytical Officer, CRISIL Ratings: “Mid-sized firms look better placed – many of them have improved business profiles and maintained profitability. They managed working capital better than smaller firms because of greater bargaining power. Also, they had healthier leverage compared with large-sized firms that witnessed rating actions. We expect this trend to continue in the near term.” Overall, India Inc’s credit quality
Dena Bank Signs MoU With LIC For PMJBY Scheme By A Business Reporter
D
ena Bank yesterday announced that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LIC under the Prime Minister’s Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJBY) scheme to provide insurance cover to all Adhar-linked Saving account holders of the bank in the age group of 18 to 50 years. People who join the scheme before completing 50 years can continue to have the risk of life cover up to the age of 55 years subject to payment of premium. Under the scheme, a risk of Rs 2
lakh will be covered in case of death of any reason and a premium sum of Rs 330/- per annum will be auto-debited to the account holder’s account. As per the terms of risk coverage, a person has to opt for the scheme every year. Account holder can also prefer to give a long-term option of continuing, in which case his account will be auto-debited every year by the bank. Says Ashwani Kumar, CMD, Dena Bank, “This year budget proposals have provided a unique insurance products that would be beneficial for both bank and its saving account holders.
continued its slow recovery in 2014-15, with the credit ratio coming in at 1.75 in the second half – up marginally from 1.64 in the first half. When upgrades are more than downgrades, the credit ratio will be greater than 1. There were 466 downgrades in the second half, of which almost 60 per cent were attributable to weak liquidity. Investment-linked sectors such as capital goods, construction, engineering, steel and real estate continued to log the highest downgrade rates. Upgrades totalled 816 with almost two-thirds driven by business-related factors such as scaling-up of operations, better demand outlook and improved capacity utilisation. Export-linked sectors and non-discretionary consumer segments such as agricultural products, textiles and pharmaceuticals continued to see the highest upgrade rates. However, a pervasive improvement in credit quality remains elusive because the value of debt seeing downgrades is far more than those seeing upgrades. This is reflected in the ratio of debt of firms upgraded to that of firms downgraded at 0.72 times. This proportion is even weaker for large-sized firms at 0.45 times. CRISIL believes
the heavy burden of debt will continue to constrain the ability of large firms to improve their credit profiles. A chunk of their debt was taken for projects that haven’t been completed yet, or are facing demand slack after completion. Says Somasekhar Vemuri, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings: “Although credit ratio is showing an upward trajectory, the enormous debt on the balance-sheets of highly leveraged large-sized firm – most of which have linkages to the infrastructure sector – continues to stall any significant improvement in the credit profile. This will also thwart a significant improvement in the asset quality of banks in the near term. The pace and extent of recovery will depend on successful deleveraging of the balance-sheets of these indebted firms.” CRISIL expects the credit ratio to remain over 1 in the medium term, which means upgrades will be more than downgrades. However, broadbased recovery will hinge on a significant improvement in investment demand and the government's ability to continue to push economic reforms. De-leveraging of balance sheets by indebted firms, inflation, and the impact of monsoon remain key monitorables.
Not Appointed ‘Women Directors’

A
s many as 32 public sector firms including GAIL, ONGC, NTPC, SAIL and Punjab National Bank have failed to comply with regulator Sebi's norms to appoint at least one woman director on their respective boards, reports PTI. Bharat Electronics, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Container Corporation of India, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation, are among other PSUs that have been non-compliant with Sebi directive, Prime Database said yesterday. Going by information gathered by Prime Database, a total of 180 NSElisted companies have not appointed a woman director on their respective boards within the due date. These include as many as 32 PSUs (Public Sector Units) and PSBs (Public Sector Banks). "As many as 180 out of a total relevant 1,456 NSE- listed companies or nearly 12% of the companies, had still not appointed a woman director," Prime Database Managing Director Pranav Haldea said. All listed firms were required to have at least one woman director on their boards from April 1, this year, as per a new Sebi directive, as also under the Companies Act, 2013. As on April 1, this year, about 832 women have been appointed to 912 directorship positions in 872 companies. Of these 43 companies already had a woman on the board before the Sebi guideline was announced, but appointed a second woman director on their board. Of the remaining 829 firms which complied with the Sebi norms, as many as 278 did so in the month of March this year. "The hope of another deadline extension appearing dim, there was a last minute rush to appoint women," Haldea said.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2015
“B
By Amarendra Dhaneshwar artok’s music had Oriental quality about it. Bartok steeped himself deeply into the folklore of Hungary, the Balkan countries and Asia Minor. He made the most profound study of this music and organised the scientific classification of many thousands of folk tunes. These strong and primitive roots were assimilated into his background. He brought forth with their support, a characteristic, genuine and profoundly personal style combining the power of the primitive with the cultivated vision and discourse of the most erudite mind", writes the celebrated violin maestro Yehudi Menuhin on Bartok in his book 'Themes and Variations'. The Hindustani vocalist who could stand comparison with Bartok is the late Kumar Gandharva. A seminar on Kumar Gandharva's contribution to music was held over the last weekend at the Shagun Hall, Kandivali (E) under the joint auspices of Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Kumar Gandharva Foundation. Kumar Gandharva (1924 to
1993) is often described as the first and the original rebel of Hindustani music. He emerged on the horizon of music as a wonder child at the age of 10. Born in a remote village called Sulebhavi in the Belgaum district which is now in Karnataka, he astonished audiences in the vicinity by his ability to reproduce the music of senior maestros like Faiyaz Khan,
Abdul Karim Khan and Sundarabai Jadhav whose 3 minute 78 rpm records were the rage in those days. The boy who had no formal training became an instant child prodigy. Later he was trained by Professor B R Deodhar in Bombay (Mumbai) and became a leading singer in the late 1940s. He was struck by a tubercular infection and had to shift permanently to Dewas in Madhya Pradesh where he was compelled to rest for over five years and stay away from the music scene. During that period of recuperation, he heard the folk music of the region around and analysed it and came to the conclusion that the classical tradition had deep roots in the folk music. One aspect of his musical personality was that he was fiercely independent in approach as well as spirit. He made his own compositions as well as ragas and sang them in his typically inspired manner. Another aspect of his musical persona was his studious approach to tradition and his attempt to harness it to his musical explorations. Prof Deodhar ran a school of
music which continues to function at Opera House. Many musicians would come to visit the place and they were impressed by the brilliance of Kumar Gandharva and would teach him some special compositions."They were mostly traditional compositions which have come down to us through the oral tradition," said Shyamrang Shukla, noted writer on music. Kumar Gandharva learned a lot from Deodhar who was brought up in the Paluskarite branch of the Gwalior gharana. Anjanibai Malpekar, the reigning queen of classical music in early Bombay (Mumbai) during the early 20th century lived in Girgaum which also housed the Deodhar's School of Indian Music. "Kumar was a frequent visitor to her house and she indulgently taught many compositions to him," said Jayaraman of the Kumar Gandharva Foundation. Dr Paramanad Yadav sang the raga 'Shivkedar' which is a creation of the legendary singer. It projected the right image of the raga. Chhaya Sakhare sang the raga 'Maru Bihag' with a sense of involvement. It was a nice tribute to the great singer.

Gangaur and Shubhada commenced the performance with Ganesh Vandana followed with the Guru Vandana seeking the blessings and protection from the elephant-headed God - Lord Ganapati and soon proceeded on to the pure dance teen taal in 16 beats with precision and revealed their mastery over footwork, technique and 'Layakari'. The duo executed varied rhythmic patterns along with the typical circular movements that forms the mainstay of Kathak. Their performance was well appreciated by the Air Force personnel and dignitaries who were present on the occasion. The Sharma sisters have performed for some of the most prestigious festivals and with their devotion and commitment, will soon be among the main rank of dancers. ew Delhi: Kings XI Punjab head coach Sanjay Bangar, who is also a key member of the Indian team's support staff, believes out-of-favour opener Virender Sehwag is capable of making a national comeback despite being on the wrong side of 30s. Bangar's assessment of Sehwag, who is 36, comes after he observed him at the Kings XI Punjab's training camp in Pune ahead of the IPL opener against Rajasthan Royals on April 10. "Yes most definitely, he can," Bangar told PTI when asked about Sehwag's return to the national fold. The dashing opener last played for India in March 2013. "He is very motivated. He is working a lot on his fitness. He had a decent first class season too. We were practising match situations yesterday and he was outstanding in that. As it is we all know, the kind of cricket he can play," said India's assistant coach. Sehwag is expected to open alongside new recruit Murali Vijay though the team also has a back-up in Manan Vohra. Shukla appointed IPL Governing Council chairman
New Delhi: Rajeev Shukla was re-appointed chairman of the powerful IPL Governing Council, ending a month-long suspense over the selection of the top post of the cash-rich league. Former Union minister and Congress leader Shukla was the IPL chairman till 2013 when he resigned from the post in the aftermath of the IPL 'spotfixing' scandal. After intense speculation over who will take charge of the league with former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, Ajay Shirke and Ranjib Biswal being the others in the fray, Shukla ultimately emerged as a consensus candidate. Shukla's appointment came just one day before opening ceremony of the IPL-8 in Kolkata. Sourav Ganguly was a new entrant to the IPL Governing Council while the senior national selection committee led by Sandeep Patil was retained for another season. Team India Director Ravi Shastri also remained in the IPL Governing Council. Another former captain Anil Kumble has been retained as chairman of the Technical committee.

olkata: Its scandalous past seasons still quite fresh in memory, the Indian Premier League (IPL) organisers will look to ensure that the focus remains firmly on cricket when the cash-rich event gets underway with a glamorous opening ceremony, featuring top Bollywood stars, here tomorrow. After a pulling off a controversy-free tournament last year, the organisers would again be hoping for a smooth run when the 47-day tournament, marred by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013, kickstarts with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. Before that, the event will open tomorrow night to a glittering ceremony where Bollywood superstars Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma form a power-packed line-up of performers. The melting pot that it is, the opening match itself features two players, who aggressively faced off as recently as in the World Cup last month, playing together

David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan will share the dressing room (Sunrisers Hyderabad) putting behind their spat in Australia recently. As the international rivals become friends, there will be some who will be hungry for success as the tournament provides an ideal launchpad ahead of next year's World Twenty20 in India around the same time. There will be some veteran Indian warhorses with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan
among others, who will see this as a final chance to make a comeback to the national side. The Indian selectors might think otherwise, but the IPL teams clearly believe the 33year-old Yuvraj still has the fire in his belly as he was bought for a record Rs 16 crore by Delhi Daredevils after intense bidding among four franchises. This had happened on the back of his three successive Ranji Trophy centuries which were not enough for him to make the World Cup cut. But
the player of the tournament in India's 2011 World Cup triumph is not the one to give up and would be among the ones to watch out for this season. "It's been a couple of hard years for me since I have come back from my treatment. I have worked very hard and I have had a good domestic season. I am confident of doing well and hope that things get better from here," the dashing left-hander has said. In fact, Yuvraj would be the key to the success for the Delhi Daredevils, who finished bottom of the table in the last two seasons. DD have once again gone for a complete overhaul and apart from Yuvraj, they have invested in a 36-year-old Zaheer Khan who too would be aspiring to don India colours one last time. To be led by South African pro JP Duminy, DD have his compatriot Imran Tahir as the Pakistani-born leg-spinner would look to replicate his World Cup show. The consistent Mohammad Shami will partner the highly experienced Zaheer in the pace department.

Don’t bowl deliveries that violate 15-degree rule: Murali
By Faisal Kamal
New Delhi: With ICC cracking down heavily on spinners with suspect action, SunRisers Hyderabad bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan feels youngsters should try to bowl deliveries that come naturally to them. KKR turned lucky before IPL after ace spinner Sunil Narine was cleared by the BCCI to bowl in the competition. Muralitharan, who has bagged a record 800 Test scalps, had a note of caution for youngsters ---to bowl within their limitations. "There is a certain degree of bend allowed and if you can't spin the ball within that rule, then you simply can't do it. So if they can't bowl that delivery but still try do that, then it's trouble. If you can bowl with a 15 degree bend then it's fine, if you can't, just don't bowl it," the Sri Lankan spin legend told PTI in an interview. "Everyone cannot hit shots like Gayle. So similarly while bowling, you can't imitate what others are doing because you might get into trouble. Like batsmen will get out while imitating a Gayle shot. These youngsters watch somebody on TV and then try and imitate it. But that doesn't work. Somethings come naturally to you. Nobody can bowl a slider as well as Shane Warne can do. Some genius can do that but if you can't just don't do it," he added. The 42-year-old Murali, who has been a part of Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore as a player in the previous editions, asserts that spinners play a big part in T20 cricket. "In every format of the game, be it ODIs, T20 or Test cricket, you need spinners. Spinners form an important composition of your team. Every team has two or three spinners, especially in T20 cricket you have more spinners. Because spinners have more chance of getting a wicket and hence they will continue to play a big role in the shortest format," he said.

Djokovic overpowers Murray for fifth Miami Masters title at the top of the rankings, sitting atop the summit for the 141st week in his career. Murray, meanwhile, is poised to return to number three in the world. The Scot’s last victory over Djokovic was in his historic Wimbledon final triumph of 2013.
MIAMI: World number one Novak Djokovic roared home in a 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-0 win over Andy Murray on Sunday to claim a fifth Miami Masters title. Serbia's Djokovic pushed his career record against the Scot to 18-8, adding the triumph in the championship match on the hardcourts of Miami to victories over Murray this year in the Australian Open final and the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters. "I could not ask for a better start of the season, winning three big titles," Djokovic said. "Hopefully I'm able to use this for the claycourt coming up. That's extremely important for me obviously leading up to French."Djokovic became the first man to complete the Indian Wells-Miami Masters title sweep three times, having also done so in 2011 and 2014. On Monday, Djokovic will tie Spain's Rafael Nadal for the sixth-most weeks spent
BRUTAL CONDITIONS The two traded four breaks of serve in the first eight games of the tense first set in which both struggled on serve on one sun-splashed end of the court. "It was just very tough, brutal conditions for both of us," Djokovic said. "We tried to stay mentally tough, both of us, and kind of hang in there, battle, and wear down the other player physically. There were lots of exchanges, a lot of long rallies. I was expecting that coming into the match, but one thing is to really expect and the other is to really experience it and really go through it on the court." Djokovic was quick to seize the initiative in the tiebreaker, racing to a 4-0 lead, and despite a double fault Djokovic had quickly wrapped up the decider 7/3. The second set went with serve until Djokovic, looking weary, was broken in the final game, gifting Murray a double fault for 0-30 before the Brit belted two winners to force a third set.

IAMI (USA): Sania Mirza achieved yet another career milestone by capturing her 25th WTA doubles title as the Indian ace continued her dream start with Martina Hingis to win the Miami Open trophy, here Sunday. The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair overcame a sluggish start to take the title with a 7-5 6-1 scoreline against second seeded Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Sania and Hingis were trailing 2-5 in the opening set but regrouped and turned the tables on their fierce opponents by reeling off eight games in a row. They had the beaten the same Russian team to win the Indian Wells to win their first title together. It has been an absolute dream start for Sania and Hingis as they are yet to lose a set since they began their partnership. "We just tried to keep telling each other to enjoy the struggle. Last week everything came very, very easily to us we didn't lose more than four games in a set. Over here we were down, and we were panicking. It was like, 'Oh my God, we're not playing well.' We just weren't used to that," Sania said after the match. Hingis credited the win to tips provided by Sania's far-

Harika lost to the eventual winner Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine in the semifinals. Muzychuk bagged the title after defeating Russian Natalija Pogonina 2.5-1.5 in the four-game final. She had
earlier defeated top seeded Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy in the quarters. While both Humpy and Harika had excellent chances to beat Muzychuk, the Ukrainian prevailed over them, due to her steely nerves. Against Humpy, she was looking at a hopelessly lost position in the deciding tiebreaker when the Indian made an inexplicable blunder and lost. Harika lost to Muzychuk when she was not able to win a simple position with two extra pawns again in the tiebreak games and then lost the return game without much ado.

Despite enjoying better possession and ball control, India paid the price for letting their guard down when put under pressure and succumbed to their first loss. For New Zealand, it was their second straight victory in the six-nation tournament at the Azlan Shah Stadium. After a barren opening half, New Zealand took the lead in
the 38th minute through a field goal from skipper Simon Child before Andy Hayward (55th) converted a late penalty corner to hand India's chief coach Paul van Ass his first defeat after taking charge of the team. India's lone goal came from the stick of striker Akashdeep Singh in the 43rd minute. NRAI sets tough trials to Rio Olympics for shooters
New Delhi: Indian shooters aiming for glory at next year's Rio Olympics will be required to take part in seven selection trials, following which the average final scores and merit points will be taken into consideration to select the team for the multi-sport extravaganza. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has
decided to broadbase its selection criteria in order to provide a level-playing field to all shooters and not just the core ones for 2015. This means shooters appearing in top international events and also the ones who are not shooting globally, will be competing at the same platform. The selection policy was
finalised by the technical committee of NRAI. Shooters winning medals in top international events like the World Championships, World Cups, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be getting merit or bonus points for their achievements. The merit points will be added to their final average score. The Olympic team will be
finalised by the end of this year. "The policy has been formulated with an aim to provide a level playing field to all and at all times to bear the hallmark of being transparent and fair to all athletes covered by it whilst being considered for selection to be a part of the national Olympic shooting team," the NRAI said in a statement.
