"Nobody has been named in the case," Bassi told PTI. Sunanda's death had created a sensation as it came hot on the heels of a bitter spat between the couple over the twitter over his alleged affair with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. "On 29th December, the medical board of AIIMS has given us a report. The main thing they have informed us is that the death is unnatural and not natural. Secondly, it is due to poison that could have been taken orally or injected and they have told us other things as well," Bassi said. He said since tests to find out the quantum and nature of the poison cannot take place in India, the police have decided to send samples abroad for examination.

EW DELHI: In a sensational twist to the death of Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar, Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a murder case on the basis of a medical report that concluded her death was unnatural and due to poisoning but nobody has been named as a suspect as yet. Disclosing this, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi did not rule out questioning Tharoor, now a Congress MP and a former Union Minister. It was not clear whether she had consumed the poison on her own or it was administered forcefully or by injection, he said. "Stunned" by the Delhi Police action, Tharoor, who had married Sunanda in 2010, sought full details from the investigators on the basis of which the police action came. "I am stunned to hear that the Delhi Police have filed a case of murder against unknown persons in the demise of my late wife Sunanda. Needless to say I am anxious to see this case is investigated

While Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said registration of a case one year after the death raises question marks and suspicions. "It is a legal process. Every case need not be sensationalised," he said. BJP spokesman GVL Narasimha Rao said the registration of a murder case has ended the confusion and hoped that the investigation

BLESS US, BABY JESUS: Pope Francis kisses a statue of Baby Jesus as he celebrates a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, at the Vatican, to mark Epiphany, on Tuesday. The Epiphany day is a joyous day for Catholics in which they recall the journey of the Three Kings, or Magi, to pay homage to Baby Jesus.

Midnight call: Mumbai is peaceful

At around 2 am yesterday, many Mumbai residents were woken up by the beep of a text message from the city police. “Please don't believe in rumours, situation is peaceful and normal,” it said.Though many who received the text weren't sure exactly it was about, the message was intended to dispel anxiety spreading through the city that a

confrontation between Muslim bikers celebrating Eid-e-Milad on Sunday night and Hindu residents in the Lalbaug neighbourhood was flaring up into a larger conflagration. The internet was full of activity from Mumbaikars asking what the message was about, and if they should actually be scared. The midnight police message had the

effect of only increasing anxiety, rather than subduing it.

A mini Taj Mahal memorial for late wife

Singapore Superhero: Batman Bin Suparman You should never judge a book by its cover, but what if that book turned out to be a comic? Batman Bin Suparman might not be a joke, but his name sure is. In Singapore, English is the most widely used language and all names are translated or converted to English when their birth certificate is issued. On May 13, 1990, this young man was blessed with being named after two superheroes: Batman and Superman. Unfortunately no one was able to find the boy for comment, as no one seems to know his alter egos.

Faizul Hasan Kadari in front of his Taj Mahal

Hasan Kadari’s love for his wife did to him. After his wife passed away in December 2011, this 77-year-old retired postman decided to create a replica of the great Taj Mahal in honour of his beloved wife. Yes, the Taj Mahal – and not just a small sandcastle-like replica, but a lifesized structure for that matter. Months after starting the project, the structure now stands on a piece of land measuring 5,000 sq. feet, in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, India. Standing at 561 feet high, this magnificent replica already cost Mr Kadari almost Rs 19 lakh with plans on spending more. Kadari said he used to think that

Shah Jahan insulted the common man by building a magnificent monument to love. But after the death of his own wife in December 2011, he said he realised that it had more about the intensity of love than the money. Since they had no children, he had no other liabilities, so he started construction of his own Taj Mahal on a piece of land [that] was not useful for agricultural purposes. When his time finally comes, he wishes to be buried inside his masterpiece — beside his wife. “I have written in my will that my graveyard should be besides her,” he said. Now that is true love.

CM addresses Diva incident By A Special Correspondent

A

fter the incident at Diva railway station on Friday which brought the city to a halt when enraged commuters went on a rampage, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has accepted the fact that the Mumbai suburban rail services need urgent attention. He made it clear that the government will leave no stone unturned to improve the infrastructure. Speaking at a function, Fadnavis said, “City's suburban railway capacity should have been enhanced by 35 per cent by now, going by the present demand. We need to do a lot and need to look far ahead while improving the infrastructure. For this we have to create a mechanism for better co-ordination between the central and the state governments.” Replying to a question about the recent Diva episode, he said, “Against the backdrop of immense bur-

den on the railway route, new rail connectivity must be developed. When I commuted recently in a train, I was bombarded with the problems being faced by the commuters. They say the Thane railway station is so crowded that it is unmanageable even to stand there during rush hours. The capacity needs to be increased. We are keeping all these things in mind.” Drawing attention towards better co-ordination between the central and state government authorities, Fadnavis said, “We will create a joint venture or a mechanism so that both the central and state government authorities work together to improve the railway services and development of infrastructure. We have a Railway Minister who gives special attention to Mumbai and loves the city.” The CM finally stressed the need of investment in infrastructure and made it clear that the government will aggressively invest in it.

Danve appointed state BJP chief By Prashant Hamine

U

nion Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Rao S a h e b Danve (59) has finally become the 16th state president of t h e Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the second party leader from Marathwada, after late Gopinath Munde, to become the state unit party president. Soon after his name was announced formally, Danve remarked that his first priority will be to enroll one crore BJP members in Maharashtra. Commenting upon the one person one per post principle in the party he said that he will consult the party leadership and tender his resignation from the union ministry. He thanked party president Amit Shah, union minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his appointment.

His appointment to the state post is expected to be ratified at the party's state executive meeting to be held some time in January 2015, probably at Jalna. The election to the post of the state BJP president has been necessitated with the incumbent Devendra Fadnavis having become the Chief Minister of the state. As per the party's rules, constitution party leaders cannot occupy more than one post at a time and have to resign from their earlier post. It remains to be seen whether Danve will retain his Lok Sabha membership as his presence will be required in the state to address local issues. Danve is a loyalist of the late Pramod Mahajan–Gopinath Munde camp. Danve's appointment is being seen as an attempt to keep a check on the political ambitions of Minister for Rural Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe in Maharashtra. Fourth term Lok Sabha MP from Jalna, Danve was earlier an MLA from Bhokardhan in the state Legislative Assembly.

J.D. Patil has been appointed as the BEST general manager, replacing OP Gupta. Last year on December 31, there was a sudden transfer of Vikas Kharage, whose tenure as additional municipal commissioner (city) lasted only three months in the cash-rich corporation. Kharage took charge on October 1, 2014, after additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani retired. Till date the government has not deputed any officer to replace Kharage as additional municipal commissioner (city) in the civic body.

Union opposes new hawking guidelines CITY

By Khushboo Panjabi

O

pposing the new hawking guidelines framed by the state government, hawker unions claim that they are anti-hawker and if passed, then hawking could be impossible in the city. According to the proposed rules, almost every important area of the city has been marked as no hawking zones. The proposed non-hawking zones include 50 metres radius from any railway station or bus stop, any junction, entrance of a shop and other commercial enterprises, any building premises, government office building, municipal hospital and major hospital, place of worship (temple, mosque, church), turning point of busy roads, etc. The Mumbai Hawkers' Union leader Shashank Rao claims that if these rules which were framed on December 6, 2014 are implemented then hawkers will have no place to go in the city which may lead them to wind up their professions. The union has threatened to take out a morcha at

Mantralaya on January 28 and also to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to make changes in the rules. Shashank Rao said, “On the one hand, the government and BMC are claiming to be making these rules for hawkers' welfare, but on the other hand, they are making such rules which are against hawking. The police and BMC are already accepting hafta from these hawkers. Once these rules are passed,

then the harassment will only increase.” Another member of the Mumbai Hawkers' Union, Mahabal Shetty, said, “The Supreme Court has already instructed not to take any action t unless hawker’s policy gets finalised. But the BMC and police are violating the rules and harassing the hawkers. We are fighting for the rights of hawkers from the last 13 years. What will be the use of this long battle if

these new rules are passed.” A senior official from License Department, on the condition of anonymity, said, “We have not got a copy of state government’s rules. We will only be able to comment after reading a copy.” In the 99,000 hawkers registration forms surveyed by the BMC recently, 44,000 hawker applications were found to be eligible. They rest were found to be bogus. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Toll Free numbers to complain about unauthorised banners By Khushboo Panjabi

T

he Bombay High Court yesterday provided the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with Toll Free numbers for citizens to lodge complaints against unauthorised posters, banners, cutouts, etc, and has directed the civic body to administer its functioning. Last December, the civic administration and the Mumbai police started taking criminal action against those putting up illegal posters and

To lodge complaints MTNL users can call 1292 or 1293 toll free

Mobile phone users should first dial 022-2269 followed by 1292 or 1293 banners in the city. So far 119 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered by the police. Sharad Bande, superintendent of the licence department of the BMC, said,

“During Diwali, Christmas and New Year last year, the number of illegal banners increased between October to December.” In an affidavit submitted to the court, the BMC said around 4,800 illegal hoardings, posters and banners had been removed till October 2014. Of these, more than

2,800 were religious banners, while 700 were political. The FIRs have been registered under section 3 of the Prevention of Defacement of Public Property Act (1995). This means a person can be fined up to Rs 2,000, or imprisoned for up to three months, or both, for putting up illegal banners.

‘Riots were pre-planned’ Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2015

State minority commission writes letter to CP Rakesh Maria about communal riots, says they were pre-planned

By Zuber Ansari

T

he state minority commission has written a letter to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria about Sunday's communal riots which erupted over a petty issue in Lalbaug. The letter voices doubts about the police action and believes that the attack on one particular community was pre-planned. The minority commission in their letter mentioned that, the riots in which various innocent youth were badly beaten up by mobs in Parel, Byculla, Dadar, Worli, etc might be pre-planned

terming it a complete law and order failure. Talking to ADC, Chairperson of state minority commission Munaf Hakim said, “As we know, city police have intelligence unit and during any festivals this department has internal inputs about anti social elements, but why they did not get any information about the preplanned attack on this occasion. “Mobs were waiting inside 'gullies' in Lalbaug and they attacked every biker, once their colleagues provided them signals about the bikers. Many bikers were beaten up in front of their

wives when they was passing on the routes where untoward incidents took place, thus they showed their muscle power,” Hakim said. “We got information about few injured youth who received major injuries, we found that the violators attacked them with fibre sticks which are normally used in Police departments, and after this it seems that, violators just wanted to tarnish the good image of Mumbai Police in front of the community who were beaten-up badly,” Hakim added. “We are very thankful to Mumbai Police Commis-

sioner Rakesh Maria who landed at the spot and took the situation under control, if he was not present in Mumbai the situation may have turned very critical,” Hakim said further. The city police has registered four different FIRs in four different police stations in Sunday communal riots against unidentified persons in Bhoiwada, Kalachowki, Byculla and Worli police stations. At Bhoiwada police station FIR is registered against unknown accused section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty).

He was then rushed to a private clinic and later to Sion Hospital,” the officer said. The episode lasted until 12.30 pm when the Sion Hospital doctors declared him dead, informed the police. After getting an account of the incident from the teachers, staff and doctors, the Matunga police registered a case of accidental death. Kenneth leaves be-

While the family has claimed the body, it is unclear if the last rites would take place soon or be kept on hold until his father returns.

Advocate Gaikwad granted bail, complainant claims he was not heard Vijay Gaikwad was arrested for allegedly posting defamatory remarks against a community on face book By Santia Dudi

A

dvocate Moin Khan who filed a case against advocate Vijay Gaikwad for making objectionable remarks against a community on face book, claims that he was not heard by the court before the accused was granted bail. Gaikwad was granted bail by Bhoiwada court on Tuesday. The complainant told the ADC, “On Monday the court considered us as a party and we were allowed to oppose the bail application along with the prosecution. Also our intervention application was accepted and we were directed to make written submissions. But today the accused was granted bail without listening to our arguments. We were not given

a chance to argue the matter. It's not a fair trial.” The complainant's lawyer advocate Yusuf Khan said, “A fraud practice took place and as a result the bail was granted. On Monday we were told that the matter will be heard at 11 am. We have moved an application in the court requesting the court to recall it's order. An order can't be passed like this, the court is supposed to listen to both the sides.” Whereas defence counsel Sujit More claims that nobody from the complainant's side was present in the court. He said, “The matter was kept at 11 am, but nobody from the complainant's side came. The court waited till 1 pm. But when nobody representing

the complainant came till 1 pm, only then the order was passed. It's absolutely a false statement that their side was not heard or they were not given a chance.” Advocate Rizwan Merchant, who is supporting the complainant from day one, told the ADC, “It's a matter of record that the matter was kept at 1 pm on Tuesday. So there is no question of the court waiting for two hours and then passing the bail order. And if at all the court waited for two hours then when the application challenging the court's order was filed, why did the magistrate accept the application? Why didn't he straight away say that he waited for the complainant for two hours before passing the order? This

doesn't happen generally. This is not correct. This is not at all acceptable. The question is, why was the court in such a hurry to pass the order? Why the accused, who is capable of hampering the peace and harmony of the society is allowed to get away so easily? We have filed an application requesting the court to withdraw the bail order, and the matter is kept for hearing on Wednesday. If the court doesn't withdraw the bail order we will approach the High Court.” Advocate Vijay Gaikwad was arrested by the police on January 2 and was sent to police custody till January 5. And on January 5 he was granted judicial custody till January 19, and was granted bail on Tuesday.

07 CITY Major drug arrests made in Deonar By Tariq Khan

P

olice officials in almost all police stations of the east region are doing their best to weed out the menace of drug peddlers. Many peddlers were caught in December, but peddlers processing high-worth drugs evaded their arrest. The Deonar police, in a successive investigation, laid a trap and arrested five peddlers for processing the MD drug (powder-like substance), including the main supplier. API Vijaykumar Ambarge of Deonar police station and his team, on the orders of senior police inspector Munir Khan Inamdar, arrested five persons and recovered 39 grams of MD worth between Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The men have been identified as Maushin Khayyum Sayyad (29) (the supplier), Suleiman Abdul Khadar Shaikh (20), Gyandeo Dashrath Lokhande (22), Mohammad Arif Intezar Khan (19) and Ajay Kumar Maurya (20). The drug menace is rampant in areas like Mankhurd, Shivaji Naga, Trombay and Cheeta Camp. Many youngsters have fallen prey to this powder-like white substance. But the police have been unable to catch peddlers supplying this high net worth drug in the region. “This breakthrough came after placing a trap, based on a tip off. It will pave the

way to bust the racket,” said an official. The API's team comprised ASI Meghwale, ASI Karde and staff Dagdu Kadam, Parsare, Chowgle, Lohate, Jadhav and Kale. The accused were arrested from Moshin's house in New Gautam Nagar, Govandi. The accused were arrested under sections 328 and 34 of the IPC and were produced in court. Mankhurd and Shivaji Nagar police, too, have made many arrests in December, but were unable to catch the suppliers. API Sushant Bundkar of Mankhurd police station arrested Laxmi on December 31 and recovered large quantities of ganja from her. Similarly API Sarjerao Netke, from ATC of Shivaji Nagar police, arrested Julie who came from Churchgate to Rafique Nagar in Govandi to supply white ink on the same night. The initiative of Mumbai police Chief Rakesh Maria to weed out drug menace in the city is bearing fruit now as the police are using all the resources at their disposal to crackdown on the drug menace.

arathi theatre and TV actress Supriya Pathare on Tuesday claimed she was held 'captive' for three months by a producer in Rajasthan during the shooting of a film and was rescued at the intervention of late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. Addressing 'Mahila Suraksha Parisanvad' (seminar on women's safety) at an auditorium in the city, the actress alleged how she was deceived into acting for a movie in Rajasthan by the producer concerned whose name she did not disclose. "I was alone at the shooting from here. ....Then for the next three months, he made me act at gun point," she said without mentioning the exact location where the incident had taken place. Pathare said she was held 'captive' on the premises of the producer and was allowed to talk to her family only using landline phone. "They asked me not to speak in Marathi. Mumbai Pride March is being ignored because the issues of the LGBT community are not talked about on a regular basis, say members of the LGBT community

By Shwetha Kannan

W

hile January is merely the beginning of a new year for many us, for the LGBT community – lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders – it is a month that celebrates their sexuality and themselves. It is the month of The Mumbai LGBT Pride Walk. While the excitement about the Mumbai LGBT Pride Walk which will take place on January 31 is in the air, the organisers are still looking for funds to make the celebrations happen. “This year is looking tough. Last year, we collected Rs 2 lakh from 15 to 20 people, but this year, despite 52 people having already contributed, there is still a deficit of Rs 64,000,” said Bhushan Kulkarni from Queer Azad Mumbai (QAM), a collective collaboration of nonprofit organisations and individuals whose aim is to celebrate gender diversity and equal rights of sexual minorities. QAM has been using crowd funding as a major source to garner money for the celebrations. Attributing the 'lack of hype' around this issue as the reason for this dip, Bhushan said, “Last year the Supreme Court's verdict on re-criminalisation of homosexuality

The LGBT community — lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders — celebrate their sexuality and themselves during The Mumbai LGBT Pride Walk. came around the same time as the Pride March was to happen and hence there was a buzz about the rights of the LGBT community. People from outside the community also came out in support of the community and made the event a grand success through means of donations as well as participation. But after that, the issue died down. Then recently it was taken up on a talk show and

people responded positively through calls and tweets. But then again, the fizz died down. So what I feel is that these issues should be talked about on a regular basis so that it doesn't fade from people's memory. People are ready to help, provided the issue is kept alive and burning.” QAM has six more days to achieve its monetary target. “We have to raise these funds by January 12. If we don't manage to do that, then we will return the collected money to the contributors. The Pride events might get affected but the Mumbai

March will definitely happen. We will take the help of traditional sources to raise the money. Right now we are asking people to donate through other means like our collection boxes, but that is a small part of the fund raising process. The main source is crowd funding,” said Bhushan. The crowd funding initiative is being overseen by Humsafar Trust, an NGO in Mumbai which promotes LGBT rights.

or a long time now, there have been no available PhD guides available for new students, which has led to PhD aspirants scrappy their dream or opting for other universities. As most of the PhD guides are already occupied, students are now willing to wait for a year or two for spots to open up, so they can pursue their PhDs. According to the rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), once a student clears his PET exam, he is eligible for three years to pursue a PhD. A student can also pursue a PhD after clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the State Eligibility Test (SET). Once the student is deemed eligible, she is interviewed by the University and allotted a PhD guide based on the subject and preference. The guides mentor the student and guide in the research work, without a dedicated fees. As per the rules of the UGC, a guide cannot mentor more than eight students at a time. A student who cleared the PET exam last February said, “I am still waiting for a

vacancy with the guide under whom I want to do my thesis. I have to wait for two years until the current students finish their PhDs and new vacancies arise. There is only one guide for my faculty, so I have no choice but to wait.” Mumbai University currently has 254 PhD centres with 707 guides. Though the records of the university state that there are 1,899 vacancies for PhD students, subjects like botany, microbiology, pharmaceutics, physics, zoology, bio-analytical science and biophysics do not have a single vacancy at most of the PhD centres. Students have no option but to wait till a PhD guide has a vacant seat. The ADC spoke to Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor at MU, who said, “There are many more PhD students who will be passing out soon and vacancies will be available under them. Students should not worry as vacancies will be created when the old students get their PhDs and register as guides. Students will not have to waste their time waiting for a vacancy as the MU is doing its best to accommodate eligible students!”

axi drivers and union leaders are going to meet the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis next week to convey the various problems they are facing and to also discuss the increase in CNG prices. AL Quadros, leader of the Mumbai Taximen's Union, said, “We are going to meet the CM to raise the issues which were never solved even after approaching the MMRTA and other transport authorities. We are struggling to reduce the sales tax on CNG. There is no such tax in the capital. Another important issue is that the number of taxis are increasing every day, but the CNG pumps

have been decreasing. More than 16 pumps have been shut in the last year.” The prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) was increased in November 2014. The autorickshaw and taxi drivers had earlier protested against increse in the CNG price which had been hiked by Rs 4.50 per kg in Mumbai. The taxi and autorickshaw unions held a protest in front of the Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) office located at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. The union had decided to approach the Bombay High Court and later had a meeting with the transport commissioner, who directed them to approach the Cheif Minister.

Meanwhile, the Regional Transport Offices in the city who were running a special drive till December 31 to clear pending work have achieved their target and cleared all pending work. Speaking to the ADC, KT Golani, secretary of the MMRTA, said, “We have cleared the work which was pending from a long time. The backlog was due to the lack of staff and staff being deployed in election duty. However now all the work has been cleared and if there is anybody who has not received their license or any work which has not been covered, then they should approach the assistant RTO who will direct them and get the work done.”

ID the Congress party try to hush up the murder of Sunanda Tharoor? It has been established now with strong evidence. Sunanda was poisoned to death. It becomes clear that the Congress made no effort to get one of its own party leaders Shashi Tharoor into trouble over the issue. Tharoor, husband of Sunanda, faced no investigation by the police. After one year, this matter has come up: It is an action prompted by vengeance – on the part of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) which is making all-out efforts to show the Congress in poor light. The conclusion now is that she was killed by polonium poison mixed with some other poison as well. The poison is said to cause widespread damage. When once injected, it cannot be defected. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was also killed by the same deadly poison. Accusing fingers are pointing at Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. How long will the Congress party protect him? According to a recent medical report, Sunanda was poisoned. The police have at last filed a FIR – a year later than what it should have been. Tharoor is clearly in deep trouble. The police will call him for interrogation. They will soon find out what made him commit the horrible act. He has been putting up innocent face so far, but he can do that no longer.

HE Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) made a significant counter move even as it backed down on the conversion row under pressure from Narendra Modi. On the face of it, the man in the eye of the ghar wapsi storm, Rajeshwar Singh, was sent on long medical leave to spare Modi more blushes. At the same time, the Sangh approved another three-year term as international working president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) for Rajeshwar Singh’s mentor and Modi’s bete noir, Praveen Togadia. The upshot of this chessboard power play between the RSS and Modi is that while Rajeshwar Singh has been silenced, Togadia is keeping the issue alive as he traipses around the country defending reconversion and calling for a 100 per cent Hindu nation. No gag order on him. In fact, it’s just the opposite. The RSS has in effect conferred a badge of honour on Togadia by giving him another term as VHP chief. Those who know the troubled relationship between Modi and Togadia say that the former cannot be pleased about this development. That’s putting it mildly. In fact, Modi would probably be hopping mad. Insiders maintain that ever since he became prime minister, Modi has been pressing the RSS to defang Togadia and ease him out. Those who have followed Modi’s career would remember that one of the first moves he made after he emerged triumphant in the post-riots Gujarat assembly election of 2002 was to get Togadia banished from the state. The two former friends and colleagues turned bitter rivals in the aftermath of the riots to claim the Hindu hriday samrat crown with Modi managing to snatch the coveted title from under Togadia’s nose. They say Togadia has not forgiven him and after his banishment from Gujarat, he has vowed eternal vengeance. Rajeshwar Singh is said to be one of Togadia’s protégés, entrusted with the all important VHP ghar wapsi programme. His enforced medical leave is a definite setback for Togadia and a clear signal to the VHP that it must heed the sensitivities of the Modi government. But the RSS seems to be following a one step backward, two steps forward policy. There’s a signal to Modi too in the extension sop to Togadia. The RSS would seem to be telling Modi that while they do not want to destabilize his government, he must be careful not to dictate terms to the Sangh, either on personnel issues or on core Hindutva issues. A section close to Modi believes that the

PM has driven home a polite but firm message about his governance agenda in heart-to-heart chat he had with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat after the winter session of Parliament ended on a sour note for the government. Others believe that this is not the end of the story. The RSS and Modi will continue to dance around each other as they pursue their

And remember, when you create misery for somebody, unconsciously, at the same time, you are creating misery for yourself -- because a thought is a two-edged sword. It cuts you also simultaneously when it cuts somebody else. A few days back, one Israeli, Uri Geller, who has been working on thought energy, displayed his experiment on BBC television. He can bend anything just by thinking: somebody else keeps a spoon in his hand ten feet away from Uri Geller, and he just thinks about it — and the spoon bends immediately. You cannot bend it by your hand, and he bends it by his thought. A very rare phenomenon, even Uri was not aware that this is possible. Thousands of people in their homes were seeing the experiment. cently, he asked Modi to send a responsible minister from the government to brief him on the urgency. He would give his assent only after he is convinced that the proposed legislation cannot wait till Parliament is in session again. The government explained the urgency for the three ordinances in this way. The coal ordinance was necessitated because of a Supreme Court ruling canceling all coal block allocations. The insurance ordinance was kosher because the bill had been approved by a select committee of the Rajya Sabha. But the explanation for the land ordinance was trickier. The government sent its legal eagle minister, Arun Jaitley, to convince the President. Apparently, there were some intricate legal issues involved which only Jaitley could explain. Still, it took him over an hour to persuade the President who first wanted a full briefing on the provisions of the ordinance and then a detailed explanation on the urgency.

MATTER & SPIRIT many things happened: things got bent, fell down, became distorted. It was weird! Thoughts are things, and very very forceful things. There was one woman in Soviet Russia, Mikhailovana. She can do many things from far away, she can pull anything towards herself — just by thought. Russians were not believers in occult things — a communist country, atheistic — so they had been working on Mikhailovana, on what is happening, in a scientific way. But when she does it, she loses almost two pounds of weight; in a half-

hour experiment she loses two pounds. It means that through thoughts you are throwing energy -- and you are continuously doing it. Your mind is a chatterbox. You are broadcasting things unnecessarily. You are destroying people around you, you are destroying yourself. You are a dangerous. And it is a great network. The whole world goes on becoming every day more and more miserable because more and more people are are broadcasting more and more thoughts. The further back you go, you find more and more peaceful — less and less broadcasters. In the days of Buddha, or in the days of Lao Tzu, the world was very very peaceful, natural; it was a heaven. Why? The population was very, very small, for one thing. People were not thinkers too much, they were more and more prone to feeling rather than thinking. And people were praying. In the morning, they would do the first thing and that would be a prayer. In the night they would do the last thing — the prayer. And throughout the whole day also, whenever they would find a moment, they would be praying inside. — Osho

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2015

LAST Friday, January 2, a pantograph malfunction triggered a furore to an extent that this part of the suburban railway got stalled for six hours. In a section of the print media, I have read that most of the readers blamed those who had vandalised the vital and expensive railway property outrageously, which is certainly condemnable as it would all have to be repaired using tax payers' money. However one thing I want to add, which no body had mentioned, is that in view of lack of proper maintenance, this kind of a situation rose. Such a heavily used railway system ferrying estimated seven million daily passengers certainly demands a far better, appropriate upkeep to avoid such upheavals. This is an extremely important thought for Mr Prabhu, the new incumbent holding the vital Indian railway minister's post, to ponder upon.

It is the responsibility of the railways to improve services for passengers, rather than only make announcements; if this is not taken seriously, the day is not far off when the agitation of the passengers escalates, and the Railway authorities and state government will be fully responsible for what results.

What we deserve APROPOS your front page story 'New property tax rule: BMC will lose Rs 1,200 crores' (ADC, January 6), the BMC is reluctant to reduce property tax on the grounds that it will suffer a substantial loss. What it fails to mention is that much of the loss is self-inflicted. A recent survey showed that there is a rate card for bribes at every level of the BMC. Twenty per cent of the total cost of civic works is consumed by bribes and more than a fifth of tax payers' money is routinely squandered with no returns. Even after public exposure, the BMC is unlikely to mend its ways; and why should it? During the last municipal election, the same Shiv Sena-BJP bunch that had provided such shoddy administration during its previous tenure was re-elected for another term – and are likely to be re-elected again this year. What is the motivation for the BMC to change the way it does business? In the end, we the people get the administration we deserve. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

provoked passengers to go on a violent rail roko agitation at Diva railway station near Thane. A number of people were injured, including policemen, and the cops had to resort to lathi charge after commuters started pelting stones and burning vehicles. The problems have their roots in two primary things. Commuters expectations soar as the railways make grandiose announcements about improvement in services and new trains. There was no communication between railway authorities and the commuters which led to frustration increasing at an alarming rate. It is the responsibility of the railways to improve services for the passengers, rather than only making announcements. If this is not taken seriously, the day is not far off when the agitation of the passengers will escalate and the Railway authorities and state government will be fully responsible for what results.

T

he All India Bar Association (AIBA) has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on recommendations for reforms in legal system in India. In the letter – which has also been sent to Justice HL Dattu, Chief Justice of India; DV Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Law and Justice – Dr Adish C Aggarwala, chairman of AIBA Association, has said, “We demand the following reforms from your good self. For the reforms in the judicial system to be effective, it is imperative that all reforms are brought in force at the same time and not one after another. In the National Judicial Appointments Commission, two 'eminent personalities' to be nominated by a committee comprising of the PM, CJI and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is suggested that the personalities not be lawyers or relatives of any judge or practising lawyer. This is required so that the nominated members can work impartially, without any bias and influence of any kind.” AIBA has suggested that there be proportionate representation on the basis of population of all states at the Supreme Court. It has been observed that there are three judges from Maharashtra (110 million population) and only two from Uttar Pradesh (UP) (200 million population), even though the population of UP is nearly two times of the population Maharashtra. He has further mentioned that there is only one judge each from Bihar (100 million population), West Bengal (90 million population), Gujarat (60 million population), North Eastern states (45 million popula-

tion), and there is no judge from Rajasthan (68 million population), Chattisgarh (25 million population) or Himachal Pradesh (6 million population). No retired judge should be appointed in any tribunal or commission, according to AIBA's recommendations. Only sitting judges should be appointed to such posts. To enable the appointment of sitting judges in the tribunals and commissions, the sanctioned posts of judges should be increased suitably. AIBA has suggested that the age of retirement for judges should also be increased from 65 years to 68 years of age in the Supreme Court, from 62 years to 65 years of age in the High Courts, to 62 years of age in case of the judges of district courts. According to the AIBA, promotion of judges should only be carried out on the basis of seniority. If any judge is not found suitable of being promoted to the higher court, that judge should not be allowed to continue as a judge and should be removed from his position. There

should be four benches of the Supreme Court across India – East, West, North-East and South. It will aid in implementing the policy of the government to provide justice at the doorstep of the litigant, the letter said. Judges of the Supreme Court whose relatives are practising in the Supreme Court may be posted at a bench where the relative is not practicing. This shall ensure an unbiased judicial system. The letter stated that the system of appointing the Chief Justice of any particular High Court from another state should also be put to an end. “It has been observed that the Chief Justices of High Courts coming from other states do not make just and proper administrative decisions as they are usually unaware of the local and social affairs of the bar, and of the ability and reputation of the local lawyers. They have to be totally reliant on the local Judges of the particular high court,” he said. AIBA goes on to suggest that all court proceedings be videographed. “The video recording of a case should be preserved in the judicial file of the case. Judges, lawyers and litigants, who are all part of the judicial system, will then take the court proceedings more seriously and sincerely. There will greater transparency and it will curb filing of false complaints against judges and lawyers. It will also lead to reduction in filing of false and frivolous appeals. There should be a live broadcast of the proceedings of all courts on the website of that court. Persons interested in cases can watch the proceedings without visiting court complexes,” said Aggarwala. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in Vishwanath Salian | ADC

According to a Gartner report, the number of active mobile connections in India is expected to cross 900 million by 2016. Also every Smartphone user in India spends around 54 minutes of the day using one or more mobile applications. This has seen an increasing rush for skilled developers as well as innumerable IT institutes offering special courses for Android application development. But only a course would not suffice. For a successful career in the mobile app world, one should know the importance of delivery mechanism in an app. To have a simple app, a complex yet proficient back end is required.

Industry Overview The mobile and technology industry is still in its infancy as there is a lot of growth left in the market. But at the same time, there is a huge scale of research and design taking place in many software companies every day. There is a big technological advancement happening in many spheres of the world which could make great changes in the industry in the near future. The world is shifting online specially the rise of Smartphones by right from young to middle-aged and above. The usage and preference of these age groups are also different. The mobile applications market is not just restricted to general users but has also reached out to business and institutional users. This ever-changing and growing industry and its revenue generation opportunities have not only enticed customers, but also business conglomerates. The app world Continued from pg 13 «

Areas of profession There is plenty of work for people of all experience levels in app development. But at first, one should understand and identify the work and which profile one wants to work as. Engineers and designers are required for mobile app development. Android app development is a big career boost for students and it may even overcome the Apple market. Android software and app development explores many job profiles for the IT sector. These roles are not confined to the mobile application development, but also cater to hardware solutions like Android customisation or optimisation, device drivers, analysis etc. This kind of employment requirement is pacing higher where companies are looking out for candidates to work as Android app developers. Learning qualifications and credentials For such requisite skills, one has to go through a specific course or training. Training institutes help you have a wider view of the whole process. The live training experience helps you exercise your creative skills practically, which is essentially required to gain proficiency in Android programming. Since Android application development is a new domain, classroom training makes it a holistic experience for all those who want to acquire the knowhow about the subject. What makes a good app developer? While many companies have job listings for programmers on specific platforms (such as iOS or Android), many also say that the platform is less important — especially long-term — than just the ability to program. There are many things in mobiles that are changing rapidly. There is something unpredictable, about how the mobile market is going to look like in five to ten years. Recruiters in such fields are looking for people who are not just developers, but those who are problem-solvers and can pick up on technologies quickly. The ability to solve problems is also key in such a young industry. There is a constant need to adapt because working in such an industry means working on so many different things. A client might request some functionality that was not present and thought of before. Someone who can’t overcome those types of challenges, are not going to be able to make it. Many companies hire young engineers and stress the value of mentorship from their more senior employees, but all of them talk about the importance of focus and passion. While most Android applications are written in Java, an adept Android professional should have the basic knowledge of Java, HTML and other general

Developers who know the principles of object-oriented programming and understand user interface will have an advantage over others. But getting trained in a good institute will definitely help them cope with the requirements of the job market. A proficient programmer should be able to juggle between languages effortlessly, since Android apps development essentially needs learning a new syntax. Innovative thinking to work on the differing needs of the consumers will spell success for an Android programmer and this is possible once you get good training. Communication skills are also critical, since you may be working directly with the client that has hired your company to develop an app. The ability to communicate is a really huge part of the industry. Recruiters want people who are able to talk. Because building applications for clients also means the engineers need to be able to talk to clients as well.

any North-Eastern people may still believe that they face racial discrimination in other parts of India. But at least 60 students from Arunachal Pradesh, `the land of Rising Sun’, would go home back from Maharashtra with a different opinion. At the Vivekanand Education Society (VES) campus, which houses 28 educational institutions under its fold at Chembur, the visiting students felt `at home’ after the warm welcome they enjoyed from hundreds of their peers, engaging into long chats, and sharing the stage for cultural programmes. Papul Toyeng, FYBA student from Arunachal Pradesh, summed up the feelings of his friends, when he said they had learnt a lot about racial discrimination. But this crosslearning experience had changed their perception very much, he said. The students, from different districts of the NorthEastern state belonging to different tribes, had come to the city of dreams as part of a student exchange programme. The students, who came to

VES on Saturday, were excited at the sight of sprawling campuses, classrooms, libraries, labs and other facilities. Students from both sides took part in the cultural programme to display the rich culture and heritage of both the states. A heady mix of music, dance and games, played out the theme – more

similarities than differences. A similar number of VES students are also expected to visit Arunachal Pradesh soon. “The aim of the programme is to expose the students to the diversity of India and to foster an understanding of each other’s traditions and culture,” said Dinesh Tahiliani, secretary of VES.

hen asked to describe his time participating in last summer’s Yale Young Global Scholars programme (YYGS), Yash Mittal, a student at GD Goenka Public School in New Delhi, said, “I never expected that a fortnight-long educational programme would turn out to be the best period of my life…I felt a spark within myself to learn and explore.” Mittal was one of 600 high school students selected through a competitive application process to participate in the fourteenth year of the YYGS programme. Taking place on Yale’s campus, YYGS offers three distinct, twoweek long sessions that take an interdisciplinary approach to global issues: (1) politics, law, and economics; (2) international affairs and security; and (3) science, policy and innovation. All three sessions emphasise leadership development, analytical writing and reading, and public speaking—essential skills for preparing students for their careers in college and beyond. “YYGS was challenging enough to make me

push my limits, but friendly enough that I never felt that I couldn’t do it,” said Ayush Sharma a student at KV. Throughout the programme, students live in one of Yale’s historic residential colleges, learn from worldrenowned faculty, and engage with visiting practitioners. This year, speakers included Thomas Donilon, the former national security advisor to President Obama; and Ambassador John Negroponte, senior lecturer in global affairs at Yale’s Jackson Institute and former US permanent representative to the United Nations. Summer 2014 also was the inaugural year for the Science, Policy, and Innovation session, which focused its multi-disciplinary curriculum on the global challenges of energy, environment, and global health. Featured lecturers included Mike Skonieczny, Executive Director of the Global Health Leadership Institute, Daniel Prober, Professor of Physics and Applied Physics, and Michelle Addington, Professor of Sustainable Architectural Design.

Students in the SPI session had the opportunity to tour Yale’s LEED platinum building Kroon Hall and participate in a special session with the Executive Director of the Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design. Within this immersive learning environment, students increase global awareness by engaging in challenging discussions and collaborative projects. The Yale Young Global Scholars of the 2014 programme reflected this commitment. They represented 80 countries and territories, including India, China, Brazil, Turkey, Singapore, and Mexico, as well as Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Peru, Poland, Afghanistan, and many more. Almost half of the cohort attended high school outside of the United States. This year, 22 Indian students participated in the programme. Alicia Hu from Canada cites this global diversity as instrumental to her experience. “Our diverse backgrounds and talents gave us each something unique to contribute to the group,” she says. “The only way to create magic is to understand the logic,” says Hansel V Henriques, audit executive, Asit Mehta and Associates (chartered accountants – partnership firm)

I

did my B Com and ACA while studying in junior college. I found mathematics and accountancy subjects very interesting and hence developed an urge to give it my best throughout the year and score well in the examinations. I am grateful to my mathematics professor Biplab Samodar at whose tuition centre I studied for my SSC. For the first time my view about Mathematics was changed to a positive one. My sir had taken a keen interest in teaching me with a strong logic base for each concept and he had advised me to opt <<Hansel V for the chartered accountancy. Henriques Similarly my accountancy professors encouraged me to give 100 per cent input for 100 per cent output at the examinations. From then I changed my aim of just passing to a challenge for securing perfection. I must say that without the prayers and support in my good and bad times, of my Mother Irene Henriques and best friend CA Rajkumar Tripathi, this course would have been just a dream. The baseline: If you enjoy a particular career you will never complain about it. To complete the CA course successfully you need to dedicate four to five years to the studies. The ICAI offers CA course as a national level course with international recognition. India needs well educated individuals to develop it and eradicate poverty and illiteracy. Among others, the ICAI also contributes in nation building by raising the quality of education from mugging up to conceptual understanding. Education – be it at school or college, has to be taken seriously, but at the same time one has to strike a balance between leisure and selfstudies. A ‘pre-planned exam-preparation’ is always essential. Learning does not stop at graduation or PG, but is a continuous process of improving and updating to get better. There is always room for improvement, so we should strive to be a better person day after day. The only way to create magic is to understand logic. As per the ICAI rules, every CA student has to complete three years of articleship training in a CA firm, so as to be accustomed to the work pattern and to become eligible to appear for the CA final examination. We as trainees had to manage work and studies simultaneously, to correlate the concepts learnt in our lectures with its

BUT IT PAYS « PEER SPEAK

practical application at work. It was a tough time, during the compulsory three years training period. I had to also attend lectures at a coaching class in the mornings, then work at office and then again attend lectures after work, though at times I have taken exam leave when needed. The training period has boosted my confidence as I am aware of work techniques and updates in audit related laws. My job profile includes execution and finalisation of company’s statutory audit, internal

audit, and audit under Income Tax Act. Investment in your education gives you the highest returns on investment. My family invested Rs.1 lakh in total towards coaching class fees for my education – from entrance exam (CA-CPT) up to completion of the CA final. As a fresher the pay scale ranges from a package of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakh per annum. The amount depends on the job profile, the candidate’s competence, and the employer’s goodwill. In the initial five years, one may earn about

Rs 12 lakh pa on an average, and later on may earn more as the profession expands. This is dependent on the ability and opportunities availed of. The CA course is one of the toughest at the international level, and is considered to be a prestigious degree. One may earn money with or without pursuing a professional course, but the respect one can gain as a qualified CA is priceless. The opportunity a CA is offered is excellent. We have four fields open to us after passing the CA examinations. These are – practice as a CA (auditor), financial advisory, working with the industry (job), and set up a business. So here, you can have an alternate mode of income, simultaneously. The only difficulty is that this course needs four to five years of dedication. At the beginning a CA student has to manage his academic and professional studies simultaneously. After graduation to manage the article-ship training and professional studies. Dedication towards this course will demand a lot of sacrifices from a candidate and may challenge ones self-esteem, as it is time-consuming and a successful result of which one is not certain. Your career is at stake, and so you cannot take chances. At the same time a positive attitude towards the course and a continuous determination will keep one moving forward. There is a rise in the competition level for CAs in general, and thus it is a challenge for survival of the fittest. Even after qualifying as a CA, nothing becomes easy. The expectations from a CA keep increasing and it is a continuous challenge to be updated with related taxation laws and its application. I am looking forward to build a strong foundation of work experience in auditing, which will help me in setting up an office to practice. Teaching being my passion, I am keen to simultaneously conduct part-time lectures for accounting and taxation subjects to college students, and students pursuing professional courses. For those who want to take up my profession I say – if you have the determination and the patience needed to pursue a bright career, then plan it well. Take advise from your mentors and select the career that is appealing and which interests you. Don’t be carried away with peer pressure or any negative influence which gives short term satisfaction. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Switzerland for hospitality management For more than a century, Switzerland has educated talent and has seen future global leaders graduate in hospitality management. It is home to the world’s top-ranked hotel schools. Sonia Tartar, CEO worldwide Les Roches writes what makes the swiss approach to learning so successful A history of hospitality excellence Considered by many as the birthplace of hospitality, Switzerland looks back on a longstanding history of tourism. It started out with Europe’s nobility and ruling classes, who sought the soothing tranquility of the landscapes and pureness of the mountain air. British mountaineers were also attracted to the location, climbing the snowy peaks and establishing winter sports in Switzerland. These foreign guests needed accommodation, which required a skilled workforce to run numerous hotels and health resorts. As a consequence, hotel management schools began to emerge all over Switzerland and over time developed a unique, holistic approach to educating skilled hotel management staff. Students not only learned about keeping the books of a hotel property, but also mastered the necessary practical operations, from service and kitchen to rooms division, which led them to understand all the necessary steps to take to build a successful hospitality business.

To set up a school in Gunde village from the funds raised

T

his New Year the youth of the city joined hands and pledged to make this world a better place. They came together to light up the lamp of literacy and stood up for the worthy cause of education as they worked towards realising the dreams of the underprivileged and the needy. The young and vibrant Rotaractors of Mumbai celebrated ‘World Responsible Youth Day’ (WRY) 2015 on January 3 and 4. The day is celebrated on the first Sunday of every year. The event is happening for the seventh year in a row. For the first time, Rotaract Mumbai (RI 3140) will be setting up a school in Gunde village from the funds raised through WRY.

On January 4 various road shows including skits, street plays and a rally, were held at Worli, Malad, Juhu, Dadar and Marine Drive. The rally started with the mega marathon 'Dream Run' where Mumbaikars ran for the cause of education at Worli Seaface. After the marathon, enthusiastic

Rotaractors performed outside Aarey Dairy at Worli Seaface and moved on to Kurar Village, Malad after which they performed at Juhu Beach, post which the rally headed to Dadar for performance arts at Shivaji Park, Dadar. Thus the grand two-day rally ended with the last performance at Marine Drive.

The performances spread the desired message of eradicating illiteracy and appealed to the youth to come forward for this cause. The Rotaractors performed at key locations, which started off with a street play and ended with a flash mob which garnered a lot of attention. They then enacted a skit that por-

trayed various social evils that lead to illiteracy and how we could be the change we wish to see by taking a step as simple as investing our time to educate our house help. The performances and cause was appreciated and supported by the audience who witnessed the WRY rally, flashmob and streetplay.

THE PLAY WAY

19

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2015

While adults find it easy to explain upsetting issues, a child is almost always at a loss for words and his sole form of expression and perceivable haven is ‘play’. And it is through play that treatment is deemed most effective. Mary Jose, a Child Counsellor and Play Therapist at Aavishkar Centre for Self Enrichment, tells Naressa Coutinho about this novel field in Child Counselling which is known as ‘Play Therapy’

T

eaching methods have considerably changed over the last decade and the stress is now on more innovative techniques of learning. In the age of tablets and Mac Books, children find textbooks obsolete and disinteresting. If it is a lesson on fruits and vegetables, don’t be surprised to find teachers towing wicker baskets full of fresh vegetables to class. In fact, child counsellors call it play therapy, as ‘play’ is every child’s natural form of expression. Play therapy is used to treat problems that are hindering a child's normal development. It is a mode of therapy that helps children express their feelings, thereby developing their emotional and social interactive skills. “Play Therapy is employed to convey to children what they need to understand through play. The therapist will guide children with instructions during play that will help achieve the desired responses from them,” explains Mary Jose, a Child Counsellor and Play Therapist at Aavishkar Centre for Self Enrichment. Play sessions provide a safe environment for the child and may help them cope with issues that they wouldn’t normally express in spoken language. Moreover, therapeutic play does not distinguish between the healthy or hypersensitive, intelligent or dull. “The job of a counsellor is to observe,” says Jose “and to recommend the best possible treatment for children with low self-esteem, behavioural issues and other painful experiences.” Often the job of a counsellor doesn’t merely stop at the clinic but may require an equal participation of parents in the growth and development of a child. In fact, Jose believes that one must first become a good counsellor or psychologist before branching out into play therapy because it is as important to understand and work with parents as much as with their kids. Through playcentric therapy, a child is able to

Pics for representational purposes only

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

deal with problems of loss, attachment etc. This form of therapeutic play is not adopted in the curriculum in schools and parents usually approach practicing child psychologists for help. Play therapy is used to help students right up to the age of 15. The therapist may work either with a single child or with a group of children at a time. Academic institutions may invite counsellors to help children deal with problems through short sessions using play therapy or even guide teachers through new and innovative teaching mechanisms that make learning more fun. “This is a career that requires constant interaction and patience with kids and anyone who loves children is sure to do good work in this field,” says Jose. She pursued a course in child development from the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, Delhi and since then has been closely working to help children grow and overcome problems.

Nowadays, it has become the norm to enrol your kid in preschools and play groups to stand a better chance at International schools (IB). Play Therapy has grown and will gradually develop into a more broad practice over time. With the pace of innovative techniques being introduced in the existing education system, therapeutic play is here to stay. In fact, Jose advices aspiring counsellors to adopt a contemporary and innovation-ridden path to succeed. She cites the example of Brain gym for kids, a technique that involves detailed exercises to help develop intelligent levels, memory and hand-eye coordination in children. To become a Play therapist, one may acquire a Bachelors Degree in Psychology or a Masters degree before branching out into child counselling. In fact, students from any field may pursue a diploma or a certificate course from a reputed institute and intern with an established clinic or under a practicing psychologist for hands-on experience. While child counsellors may find work at clinics and hospitals, there is also the opportunity to work with community groups, academic institutions and private clients. One may start their own private practice and build their network through self-promotional activities and word-of-mouth. One must constantly update themselves on the latest in child counselling by attending work-

shops, training sessions and even enrolling for intensive coursework. Play therapists may even conduct sessions for budding counsellors and become research professionals in the field. The scope of the field is vast. More importantly, one must understand the sensitive nature of the therapy and must act responsibly where confidentiality, uniqueness and welfare of the child are concerned. “Anyone looking to pursue a career in child counselling and play therapy must possess a genuine passion to work with children; only then will success be yours. Your innovative bent of mind will help your interactions with children, making them better citizens of tomorrow. I firmly believe that we as psychologists must educate parents about the different styles of learning and the fact of multiple intelligence, wherein the parent understands that every child is unique and not everybody is born to do a PhD or become a doctor or engineer. You must work hard and be responsible in all your dealings especially with young minds,” concludes Jose. o confused? About where you will land up after completing your graduation degree? Or just looking out for good options that are better than an MBA or other ‘herd-following diplomas’? Some of you may have planned to work for a year, earn some petty cash or join dad's business to help him and bring repute to the family. While the rest are still in a dilemma jumping from option to option, advice to suggestion, or sitting in a corner, leaving everything to fate, hoping it would send you somewhere. Guys, chill out, relax and do what you are passionate about instead of going into a 'lucrative' field and doing what you are told to do.

Don't do something that you are merely interested in. Yes, you heard me right! Interest is something you tend to lose with age and other natural phenomena. I have heard people saying, “Do what interests you.” But my fellow brothers and sisters, interest is an attribute that may not last forever. So then what is suitable for you? The answer is – do what you are passionate about. That's the real success mantra. Passion is what lasts forever irrespective of the circumstances. Passion is the strong liking to do something. You may be passionate about teaching, socialising, playing or may be even talking. People who follow their passions rather than their interests are always successful. It may be possible that your interest may be a passion, but your passion can never be measured in numbers. Thus before planning for your future, identify your passion and then jump into the field that allows you to pursue your passion. You may find your passion wrapped in the memories of your childhood or you may find the essence enclosed in the happiness of the present. Passion may be by virtue of your birth or by virtue of the environment you are brought up in. Following your passion and making it your occupation will bring out the best from you. That's what today's industries look for.

An exchange of fire took place between Maoists and police on Tuesday in Telangana's Khammam district while six vehicles used for laying roads were found burnt, police said. OLKATA/NEW DELHI: Coal industry employees across the country on Tuesday went on a five-day strike, halting production at over 60 per cent of state-run Coal India units that may also severely hit fuel supply to power plants, while talks failed late tonight to end the industrial action. The government officials held hours-long negotiations with union representatives, but failed to convince them to call off the strike, which is being billed as the biggest industrial action since 1977. Claiming that over 5 lakh coal industry workers across the country have gone off-work, the union leaders said they are open to negotiations at 'political' level, including with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal. On its first day itself, the strike is estimated to have caused production losses to the tune of Rs 70 crore in first two shifts today, officials told PTI. The strike call has been given by all five leading trade unions of the country, including the BJP-backed

The Labour Ministry said in a statement that the strike has affected the working of CIL and its subsidiaries, as also the mines of Singareni Collieries Co Ltd. The strike, joined by all five major trade unions - BMS, INTUC, AITUC, CITU and HMS -- is likely to affect production of up to 1.5 million tonnes (MT) of the dry-fuel per day besides fuel supply to power plants which are already grappling with fuel shortages. Coming out of late-night talks, INTUC Secretary General S Q Zama told PTI, "Negotiations at the secretary-level have failed, but we are open for discussions at political level, at the level of Prime Minister or Coal Minister. "We did our best to arrive at an amicable solution, but the (Coal) Secretary has his own limitations. Employees of Coal India Ltd. shout slogans during a protest for their demands at Coal Around five lakh workers, including India head office in Kolkata on Tuesday. 3.5 lakh from CIL, are on strike." Pak targets villages, border posts J

AMMU: Pakistan fired mortar shells and gunshots at over 60 villages and scores of forward posts in Kathua and Samba districts in Jammu & Kashmir in continuing ceasefire violations over which it has refused to take protest notes from the Indian side. Nearly 10,000 people have fled from the border areas with 7,500 taking shelter in camps set up by the government in safer areas in Kathua and Samba districts since the latest round of ceasefire violations by Pakistan started on New Year Eve, officials said on Tuesday. As tensions on the Indo-Pak border escalated, Border Security Force(BSF) Director General D.K. Pathak asserted that India wants peace along the border but will retaliate strongly if fired upon. "We cannot go on taking their(Pakistan) bullets," he told reporters after paying floral tributes

The latest round of ceasefire violations by Pakistan has left four jawans and a woman dead while five Pakistani rangers were killed in retaliatory firing. As many as 50 villages and many border posts were targeted in Kathua up to 2300 hours on Monday and the shelling resumed around 0400 hours today, Deputy Commissioner Kathua Shahid Iqbal Choudhary told PTI, adding it was so intense that mortar shells landed about four km inside the Indian territory. HUBANESWAR: Hitting out at Congress for raising doubts over the Pakistani boat incident, BJP President Amit Shah on Tuesday asked the opposition party whether it was fighting elections in India or Pakistan. On his maiden visit to Odisha, Shah said it should be the 'duty' of the Congress to boost the morale of the defence personnel instead of finding faults with NDA government's determined efforts to curb terror. "I will like to ask the Congress from where (do) they fight elections? In India or Pakistan ?" Shah asked while addressing BJP's 'Mahasangram' rally here. Congress has raised doubts over government's version of Pakistani boat incident near Porbandar last week and asked it to "come clean" and explain "which terrorist organisation" was behind the episode that unfolded on the high seas. The Congress stand triggered a war of words with the BJP which accused the opposition party of touching a "new low" and doing politics over terror, reports PTI. Shah lauded the Coast Guard and the defence intelligence wing for saving the country recently from another terrorist attack through water route. Shah said the Narendra Modi government at the Centre was determined to foil any attack and and give a befitting reply to cross border firings. "They (Pakistan) fire bullets from across the border, but the nature of India's response under NDA government has changed. We are giving a befitting reply.

As stock markets crashed sharply, the marketplace was yesterday rife with speculation about a ‘fat finger trade’ in a future contract of benchmark Nifty even as NSE officials maintained that trading was normal.”The trade was within the price range and we have not received any complaint about it being an erroneous trade. Trading has been happening normally,” an NSE official said. However, there was widespread speculation in the market that a huge ‘fat finger error’ took place in Nifty futures contract for the current month, which swung wildly and fell by 5 per cent from a high of 8,422 (also opening level) to an intra-day low of 8,000 before recovering some lost ground. NSE officials, however, maintained that there was no freak trade. In market parlance, freak trades have often been referred to as ‘fat-finger trades’ and punching errors, as they are often claimed to have been executed erroneously due to entry of wrong parameters or pressing of wrong keys on trading terminals. However, there have been fears that some manipulators might be at work in the name of erroneously entered trade orders. After a long-drawn upward trend, markets crashed today with BSE Sensex plummeting 855 points and NSE Nifty by over 251 points.

HC Rejects ED’s Plea Against Tech Mahindra

In a relief to IT firm Tech Mahindra, the High Court of Judicature Hyderabad, dismissed a petition filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenging the court’s earlier decision of issuing stay orders on agency’s attachment of fixed deposit worth Rs 822 crore belonging to the company. In 2012, the ED had issued attachment orders freezing fixed deposits of Mahindra Satyam (now merged into Tech Mahindra) in connection with its probe in a money laundering case. A single bench judge had later stayed all further proceedings pursuant to the attachment order. Challenging the single judge order, ED had filed a writ appeal before the bench. The bench comprising Justice B Subhash Reddy and Justice A Shankar Narayana on December 31, 2014, issued orders dismissing the ED’s appeal, saying that the act of ED is contrary to the rules.

T

aking stock on the Indian economy’s twin deficits – current account and fiscal situation – the imbalances have widened marginally so far in FY15 (Apr14-Mar15). In H1 (Apr-Sep14), the current account deficit stood at 1.9% of GDP, widening from 0.6% in the prior six months. There is likely to be little relief in the Dec14 quarter, as the average monthly trade deficit jumped by 20% in Oct-Nov vs first half of the year (see chart). Higher gold imports and rise in non-oil non-gold purchases offset the beneficial impact from lower oil imports so far in the year. That said, “a blowout of the fullyear current account balance is unlikely” says DBS Bank, India . According to DBS, the “authorities have kept a close eye on gold

imports to reinstate curbs were investment demand to return. At the same time, falling global crude prices should also provide relief to the trade balance in rest of the year. We expect the full-year current account shortfall to remain well within the central bank’s comfort level of -2.5% (DBSf: -1.6%) this year and the next. Funding risks are also minimal given strong capital inflows in the equity and debt markets accompanied by an increase in the FDI flows. Panning over to the fiscal balance, the deficit has already reached 99% of the annual target between Apr-Nov14. While expenditure remains on track, low revenue collections are the main cause of the fiscal gap (see Daily note on 5 Jan 2015). As things stand, the FY 15 fiscal deficit target of -4.1% of GDP is at

risk. However, the government has oft-emphasized the need to meet fiscal targets and thereby are likely to take more corrective steps through additional spending cuts, seek dividends from public-sector companies, spectrum auction proceeds and delay in tax refunds. While necessary, these steps raise doubts over the quality of fiscal consolidation achieved. In our view, while the FY 15 deficit target will be met, risks of a modest overshoot cannot be completely ruled out. In sum, despite the marginally wider twin imbalances, we do not expect either to emerge as a major flashpoint this year. Nonetheless it is important for the authorities to ensure that the deficits remain in control on a sustainable basis, not withstanding gradual recovery that is underway”.

India Inc Demands Cut In Corporate Tax, Income Tax By A Business Reporter

P

itching for a non-adversarial tax environment, India Inc yesterday suggested reduction in tax rates on corporate as well as individuals to boost economic growth. In the customary pre-Budget consultation with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, industry demanded increase in public spending in the infrastructure sector and expediting the reform process to promote 'Make in India' campaign. "We had a good discussion. We raised several issues. The rate of MAT should be restricted to 10 per cent to provide a fillip to manufacturing. The developers and units in SEZs should be provided relief from MAT and DDT," CII President Ajay Shriram told reporters in New Delhi. He said there are enough in-

dicators to show that the economy is on the cusp of recovery. "We are certain that the Budget would chart out new ideas and initiatives to make the recovery process more robust," he said, adding that the CII suggested steps for boosting agriculture growth, creation of jobs and improving ease of doing business. Ficci President Jyotsna Suri said that efforts should be made to move away from the aggressive revenue approach and provide "a genuine non-adversarial and conducive tax environment" for industry and economy to flourish. "I requested for rationalisation of tax regime. There is a revenue target given to tax officers and because they have to attain that, they often use irrational tax demands and also use coercive methods. They should be judged on their performance and

Speaking on the occasion of the launch of the two plans, Yateesh Srivastava, Chief Operating Officer of ARLI said “The online space continues to grow for the insurance sector with more and more customers turning to the Internet for either information or actual purchase. As pioneers in the online space the time is just right to expand our product portfolio with two new plans tar-

geted at the ‘New Age’ consumer. The Aegon Religare iMaximize Insurance Plan is a Unit Linked Plan (ULIP) which has a 0% Premium Allocation Charge. The plan comes with a ‘triple-benefit’ option which pays out a lump sum in the case of death of the policy holder, an annual income benefit for the life of the policy and also pays all remaining premiums in order to ensure that corpus creation is not compromised. For Aegon Religare introducing the two new online plans is a step towards creating a broader set of online offerings.”

not on their achievement of targets," she said. The industry leaders were of the view that the Reserve Bank should cut key interest rates to boost demand and investments. On General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR), they asked to defer its implementation by two years to improve business climate. To revive consumption and savings, CII said there is a need to increase disposable incomes of households by increasing tax exemptions."Investment allowance should be extended to infrastructure sector to give a fillip to investment activity without significantly affecting government finances. We asked to provide tax incentives. Restore tax benefits for individuals for investing in infrastructure bonds," Shriram said.

India Needs To Build Pension Net For Millions Fiscal burden of pensions can be 3.4% to 4.1% of GDP by 2030 By A Business Reporter

T

here are nearly 100 million people aged over 60 in India today, and that number will triple to 300 million by 2050, says a Crisil Research study. In other words, every fifth citizen will be a sexagenarian compared with every twelfth now. The worry is that most of them will be financially insecure in their sunset years if a social security net doesn’t get built starting right now. And if a large number of the old end up having no pension by 2030, the government will have to bear the heavy fiscal burden of providing minimum sustenance to them. A multifold increase in pension coverage to the private-sector workforce is therefore an imperative. “With the focus on India’s demographic dividend, the fiscal cost of ageing is not at the forefront of discussion. However, unless addressed, this cost can be onerous in coming decades,” says Roopa Kudva, MD & CEO, and CRISIL. Government employees joining after 2004 are covered under the defined contribution formula of the National Pension System; hence the government’s pension liability on account of these employees will decline to 0.7% of GDP by 2050 from 2.2% of GDP currently. The problem, however, lies in the private sector. CRISIL Research has built a best-case scenario where pension coverage expands such that 70% of the private-sector retirees by 2030 (63 million) will get a pension compared with just 8% (4.8 million) now. Even if this happens, and the government has to provide

pension to only 30% of the old, in addition to retired government employees by 2030, its pension bill will rise by 120 basis points to 3.4% of GDP by 2030 from around 2.2% currently, assuming each pensioner gets Rs. 2,000 every month. Under the worst-case scenario, if private-sector coverage stays chronically low at its current level of 8% even by 2030, the government will have to formulate a pension scheme to support the entire population of the old. This will raise the fiscal burden to as high as 4.1 % of GDP, assuming a monthly payout of Rs. 1,000 per pensioner – or half the amount in the best-case scenario. While all old citizens will receive pension through such a scheme, the amount each one gets will be significantly lower than in the bestcase scenario because of the sheer number of dependents. Adds Kudva: “In either event, the fiscal burden of pension ranging from 3.4% to 4.1% of GDP in 2030 is high. In comparison, the central government today spends 3-3.4% of GDP on education and just over 1% of GDP on medical and public health, water supply and sanitation.” Therefore, the government will have to facilitate access to pension plans for a huge section of the private-sector workforce to avert fiscal stress, and it will have to complement this by incentivizing retirement savings. “India is not the only country set to witness a steep increase in old-age dependency. Indeed, the proportion of its old people will be less than those of several countries and also the world average in 2030. But the rise from where we stand today will be steep – hence the need to act fast.” says Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, CRISIL.

The Pirate Lords want to release the goddess Calypso, Davy Jones’s damned lover, from the trap they sent her to out of fear, in which the Pirate Lords must combine the 9 pieces that bound her by ritual to undo it and release her in hopes that she will help them fight. With this, all pirates will stand together and will make their final stand for freedom against Beckett, Jones, Norrington, the Flying Dutchman, and the entire East India Trading Company. WARNER’S CENTURY LEADS AUSTRALIAN DOMINATION SPORTS

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2015

David Warner who witnessed the freak accident involving Phil Hughes at this venue on Nov 25, slammed his 12th Test century By Chetan Narula

S

YDNEY: Opener David Warner continued to torment a hapless India by slamming a fluent century as Australia reached a resounding 348 for two on the opening day to take early control of the fourth and final cricket Test. Electing to bat on a hot and sunny day, the hosts rode on a 200-run opening stand between Warner (101), registering his third ton in the series, and Rogers (95) to once again expose a toothless Indian attack. After a strong opening show, Shane Watson (61 batting) and captain Steven Smith (82 batting) ensured that Australia stay on the saddle by stitching a 144-run unbeaten third wicket partnership on what turned out to be a frustrating day for the Indians at the SCG. Playing their first game at the SCG after the passing away of teammate Phillip Hughes six weeks back, an emotionally charged Australia reacted by scoring runs at a fast clip to demoralise the opposition attack. Rogers though got an early reprieve after Lokesh Rahul dropped the left-handed batsman at second slip off Mohammed Shami (1-58). The opener was on 19 and made full use of the 'life'. Warner, who was one of the players to witness the freak accident on November 25 at this venue, was in control from the very start and slammed his 12th Test century after lunch. Making just one change to their playing XI after bringing in Mitchell Starc for the injured Mitchell Johnson, the hosts were unchanged in their dominating style of play. India though made wholesale changes with Kohli opting for Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Wriddhiman in place of Shikhar Dhawan,

Kumar's inclusion though did not solve the bowling woes as Warner and Rogers put on 39 runs in the first 5 overs, the scoring rate zooming past seven-an-over. It was only with Shami's introduction into the attack that the scoring rate came down. The Bengal mediumpacer was also unlucky after Rahul dropped a sitter at slip and Rogers, rubbed salt into Indian wounds with a boundary off the very next delivery, bringing up the 50run mark came up in the 8th over.

Clarke leads emotional tributes to Hughes at SCG S

YDNEY: Emotions ran high on the opening day of the fourth and final Test between India and Australia as injured skipper Michael Clarke led a series of tributes for late Phillip Hughes, who was fatally struck by a bouncer six weeks back at the SCG. Clarke, who is part of the Channel Nine team, has been been with the Hughes' family since the fateful incident took place on November 25 and once again gave his emotions voice in the first international match after tragedy struck on this ground. "This was his ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground," Clarke said in a Nine Network tribute. "I never had a blood brother but he was my

brother. Together we enjoyed life and celebrated one another's successes, when he made runs when I made runs. It felt like we made our hundreds together. "His love of life, it helped me get out of bed in the morning, I didn't want him to beat me at anything, yet loved it when he did," he added. In another moving tribute, the crowd stood to applaud when it was announced during the pre-match ceremony that Hughes's parents Greg and Virginia and siblings Jason and Megan were in attendance. Players of both teams, Australian teammates pause for a moment at the Sydney Cricket Ground stood shoulder to shoulder in as a photo of their teammate Phil Hughes appears on a screen before the front of the Members Pavil- final Test match against India in Sydney on Tuesday.

ion ahead of the national anthems, also joined in the round of applause from the crowd as an image of Hughes was displayed on the big screen on the eastern side of the ground. Hughes, who had represented Australia in 26 Tests and 25 ODIs, was hit by Sean Abbott delivery in a Sheffield Shield game at the SCG and succumbed to his injuries two days after. Clarke spoke of Hughes' resilience. "A good guy who fought for everything he ever got and then fought some more, who never gave up," Clarke said. It would have been another heart-wrenching moment for the Australian players, particularly David Warner, Brad

Haddin, Shane Watson, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc, who were in the middle of the SCG to witness the freak on-field accident. Warner made his own personal tribute when he reached 63 - the score Hughes had reached before tragedy stuck - by bending down to kiss the brown patch of grass at the Randwick End that marks the spot where the man from Macksville was felled. Also when the Australian openers walked out onto the ground for the first ball, Warner stopped to put his hand on the bronze tribute to Hughes that was installed just outside the players' rooms yesterday.

UMBAI: Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, still recovering from a shoulder injury, and young left-arm spinner Axar Patel were included in India's 15member squad for the cricket World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand from next month. Allrounder Stuart Binny also made the cut while there was no place for Murali Vijay and Robin Uthappa in the squad, announced by BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel after a

selection committee meeting here. The five-man selection panel, however, ignored Yuvraj Singh, who was not in the list of the 30-member probables but had come into reckoning after his three back-to-back centuries in the Ranji Trophy. Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who struggled in the ongoing Test series against Australia, has also been retained in the squad for the high-profile event to be held from February 14 to March 29.

Not only Yuvraj Singh but other names were also discussed apart from the 30 probables. There were deliberations between five selectors and captain Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher were on the conference call.

SANJAY PATEL SECRETARY, BCCI

The squad, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni has no major surprises with the selectors opting to go with four specialist pace bowlers -- Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav -- considering the pacy wickets in Australia and New Zealand. The 20-year-old Axar Patel, who has made a reasonably good impression in the few ODIs he has played, was expectedly picked in the squad, considering that Jadeja's fitness could be an issue. The selectors have however taken some risk in picking Jadeja in the squad but Patel expressed confidence that the all-rounder will be fully fit before the biggest cricket tournament. "Jadeja at present is undergoing rehabilitation programme. He is doing wonderfully well. We had detailed discussion with BCCI physio (on his inclusion) and we are confident that he will return to training within 10 days," Patel said on Jadeja's fitness. Patel said Yuvraj's name was deliberated upon but they decided against selecting him. "Not only Yuvraj Singh but other names were also dis-

NEW DELHI: Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar today said while India's batting line-up for the upcoming ODI cricket World Cup looks formidable, the all-rounders in the side are expected to play a major role in defending the title at the quadrennial extravaganza in Australia and New Zealand. The Indian selectors today included all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, still recovering from a shoulder injury, and Stuart Binny in the 15-member squad for the World Cup. "The Indian batsmen are capable of putting a lot of runs on the board. Batting has been India's strength. Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who struggled in the ongoing Test series against Australia, has also been retained in the squad, and Gavaskar feels he is a better choice over Murali Vijay\. "The World Cup is 50-over format and this is the format which will suit Dhawan more," he pointed out. The fans have taken to the social networking sites after the World Cup squad was announced today, criticising Stuart Binny's inclusion in the side. Williamson, Watling record Good pitch and poor fielding helped Australia, feels Warner smashes Sri Lanka hopes By Chetan Narula

W

ELLINGTON: A world record sixth-wicket partnership of 365 by Kane Williamson and BJ Watling, who both posted career bests, slammed the door on Sri Lanka in the second Test in Wellington today. Williamson's unbeaten 242, with Watling not out 142 rescued New Zealand from a deep hole and carried them to 524-5 declared in their second innings. Sri Lanka were left facing a 390-run target on a ground where the record for a successful fourth innings chase is 277-3 set by Pakistan 11 years ago. At stumps they were 45-1 with Kaushal Silva on 20 and Dhammika Prasad on one. Dimuth Karunaratne was out for 17 four overs before the close to be the only

dismissal of the day. With wickets hard to come by on a flat track, and with Sri Lanka holding middle-order strength led by Kumar Sangakkara, a draw seemed the likely outcome which would give New Zealand the two Test series 1-0. Brought together as New Zealand's last recognised batsmen with the score at 159-5, a perilous 24-run lead, Williamson and Watling methodically ground the Sri Lankan bowlers into submission over the following eight hours. The declaration came when they were 13-runs ahead of the previous sixthwicket record of 352 set by Watling with Brendon McCullum in similar Test-saving circumstances against India a year ago.

Kane Williamson and BJ Watling added a record 365 runs for the sixth wicket during their match against Sri Lanka.

YDNEY: Australian opener David Warner today said that a good pitch coupled with India's poor bowling and fielding helped him score his third hundred of the series and place Australia at a commanding 348 for two at stumps on day one of the fourth and final cricket Test here. Warner hit 101 and Chris Rogers made 95 as Australia put on 200 runs for the opening wicket to give the hosts a rousing start. "Also there was no swing and sideways movement so you have to try and dry up the runs somehow. It must have been frustrating for Virat Kohli because it is tough to captain when the bowlers bowl both sides of the wicket," he explained. Warner, however, admitted that Australia were lucky to have won the toss. "We were lucky that the coin fell our way and it was a fantastic toss to win. 348/2 is a fantastic position to be in. There was no swing or sideways movement at all, so it was quite challenging for the Indian bowlers. It's going to be challenging for us to take 10 wickets as well. We have to dry runs up when we bowl," Warner said.

Warner may quit IPL to focus on Tests

The 28-year-old burly cricketer said he doesn't want to burn out playing too much cricket as the next five years of his career will be crucial. "We've got a long 18 months ahead and I need to have a clear mind about where I want to go for the next five years right through to the end of my career," he wrote. "My forearm and thumb are both really sore leading into this Test, not that there's anything courageous about me taking the field.”

At close, Ojha - who has struck 7 fours and a six - was accompanied by captain Devendra Bundela (42 in 89 balls with six fours) as the two remained unconquered after putting on 91 runs for the fourth wicket. It was Rawat's brilliant spell, supported by Puneet Datey's tight spell of bowling from the other end that saw Mumbai fold like a pack of cards. Speaking to PTI, Vijender said he preferably wants two-time Olympic medal winning wrestler Sushil Kumar to get the honour, as originally recommended by the Sports Ministry.

Kinshuk guides Bagan to victory V

ASCO: Kinshuk Debnath scored the match-winner to guide Mohun Bagan to a 1-0 win over Shillong Lajong to end their campaign on a happy note in an inconsequential Group B league match of the 36th Hero Federation Cup football tournament at Tilak Stadium. The all important goal was scored by defender Debnath following a free kick taken by Sony Norde in the 74th minute. Bagan finished their league engagement with five points from four matches. Shillong Lajong drew blank from the four matches they have played. Both the teams played for pride as they were out of the tournament. Bagan started brightly and created numerous scoring changes with Yusa Katsumi, Jeje Lalpekhlua and Sony Norde failing to cash in on the chances that came their way. They could have easily led by four goals by half time. Bagan also missed a penalty after Jeje's feeble

31

shot was saved by rival keeper Vishal Kaith who was largely responsible for keeping the slate clean in the first half. Luck also was not in Bagan's favour as woodwork twice came in their way twice. Sony Norde's try from top of the box and Kinshuk Dednath header hit the cross bar. Lajong defence did well with Airbor Khongjee standing tall to thwart rival moves and looking to attack on the counter and nearly succeeded on a couple of occasions but Shilton Paul did well to make saves from David Ngaiate and Rupert Nogrum. Bagan continued to press for a goal after the break and Sony Norde along with Jeje were on target in quick succession but rival keeper Vishal did well to frustrate them until Debnath finally scored in the 74th minute.
