A whistle-blower who claims to know about it all, says Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is involved and that a cover-up operation is on. And there will be no CBI probe By A Correspondent

O Mahila Congress activists burning an effigy of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan demanding his resignation and CBI probe for his alleged involvement in Vyapam scam, in Bhopal on Monday.

ne more shocking disclosure is now available with regard to the Vyapam scam: a whistle-blower who has surfaced has alleged that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is involved in the scam. "The CM wants me to be dead", he said. The whistle-blower does not know how exactly he is involved. He is extending support to those who are behind the scam. The CM is hiding facts. The chief minister has rushed to Delhi and met Home Minister Rajnath Singh who has now stopped

saying that the BJP is willing to use CBI. The chief minister is dead against calling the CBI. Why has the BJP started singing a new tune now? It had categorically stated it was for letting High Court or the Supreme Court take over the investigation. It is clear a cover-up operation is on. Behind the scam are politicians, officials, businessmen. In the scam, as many as 1,887 are arrested, FIR has been lodged against 140 persons.Meanwhile troubles mounted for Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan after a woman trainee

Dawood aide Chhota Shakeel says the fugitive and former IPL boss has no threat now

ormer IPL boss Lalit Modi keeps evading inquiry by several agencies on conditions of life threats in India. The threat givers themselves have clarified that Lalit Modi need not worry and is free to return to India. While LaMo is defending all possible allegations on him through micro-blogging site twitter, Facebook and his own website by providing evidences available with him in terms of documents, photographs and snap shots of his messaging conversations with several people who were allegedly provided hospitality by him during his tenure as IPL boss. LaMo is constantly answering

questions of his followers on social media sites. However, this reporter too asked him through a private message and a tweet on twitter whether he had paid Rs.1,000 crore to Dawood Ibrahim and the reason

for paying him the huge sum. LaMo chose not to reply. Meanwhile in a recent telephonic interview to a TV channel, Dawood's closest aide Chhota Shakeel has clarified that LaMo did have threat from Dawood's D-company and it was because of LaMo not paying back Rs.1,000 crore that he owed the underworld gang. "We wanted to kill him (Lalit Modi). We also went to Bangkok to gun him down, but it was late by the time we reached there, he had left by then," said Chhota Shakeel to a reporter of a TV channel. "I cannot disclose what money he owed us but he had later paid the money hence we have nothing to do

with him now. He is free to return to India, " Shakeel added. In 2010, LaMo had left India and have never returned till date. On every occasion LaMo has told the investigating agencies his life was threatened in India and hence he cannot return. Enforcement Directorate (ED) have issued notices to LaMo several times to appear before the agency, but the reason remained the same. LaMo was provided police security on the basis of intelligence inputs. The inputs had suggested that he had threat to his life from Dawood's D-Company. However, Mumbai Police had written letters to ED, Mumbai and IT (Intelli-

The security agencies after a review had concluded there was no threat to his life after November 2010. On June 17, fresh notices to LaMo was issued by ED and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) about which the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in a press conference in New Delhi had said that notices issued to the former IPL chief were quasi-judicial in nature, 'light blue' notice was issued against LaMo by the DRI at the behest of the ED. ADC on June 26 had published a report on how Lalit Modi has kept evading the probing agencies with his now familiar ‘threat’ line.

Children of CSWs of Kamathipura are out of the rut. They are enrolled at Night Care Center, with a little help from Prerana

MUMBHAI Vikas Sabnis

GOOD SAMARITANS: Priti and Pravin Patkar, the force behind Prerana.

MIDNIGHT CHILDREN: Children of CSWs of Kamathipura at a Night Care Centre. said, “I was shocked to see the inhuman condition in this area. I saw generation after generation having no choice or having no right to choose different paths in their life. If a girl is born then it is a must that she should become a sex worker and if boy is born than he should be groomed as an agent or a pimp, to bring in customers for his sisters and mothers. I also found out that children were often drugged and put under the cots as their mothers were entertaining customers. I even saw three generations of same family (a grandmother, mother and a child) solicit customers on the same street. It was a horror to detect the perfect strategy of the red-light area to groom these children for education rather than fall into the flesh trade”.

Prerana framework For Prerana, the focus is on safety and overall development of CSWs'

children. A day at the Night Care Center starts at 5 p.m. There are two categories of children being enrolled: below six years and above six years. The children above six years come back after attending afternoon school and are given a snack, which is followed by classes conducted by the teachers. There are sports activities for the younger children. Children suffering from diseases or ailments are given medicine, treatment and a nutritious diet suggested by doctors. The classes get over by 8.30 p.m. They are also provided dinner and later they watch television for an hour before going to sleep. School-going children have breakfast at the Night Care Center and then go to school. There are

classes like life skills education, gender programme, music, dance, craft, science, counselling, magic classes and field trips for children. There are sessions with mothers about health and impressive parenting issues. The Prerana team step out and meets mothers to check whether there are any children who can be enrolled with the Night Care Center. Today, Prerana has more than 250 children in the four night care centers. And they also run a Girls’ Shelter in Kharghar. Several children have finished their MBA, law and degree course from recognised universities, secured a good job, rescued their mothers/sisters and are living a good life with their families. Who would ever have thought that these young children often served as pimps or agents for their mother’s customers would be free from all the horrosr and will be leading a good social life with better education, with a little help from Prerana!

Unattended briefcase triggers panic in Fort area By Aroosa Ahmed

At the end of our foreign tour series, we are going to visit the capital of yet another ‘superpower in future’ sir... that’s Delhi!

Hina (name changed), a CSW, said, “The children who were born here are having bad destiny, they either ended up as prostitutes or became part of the activities of the sex trade, I would like my children to pursue a life of dignity and not to be part of the flesh trade. Every mother wants her child to be enrolled in a school and walk out to a better future.” Earlier Priti Patkar faced a lot of opposition and flak, but after counseling the CSWs, now every mother and sisterint the red light area wants her child to be enrolled in Prerana at Kamathipura.

hough prostitution is illegal in India, hundreds of women and children are trafficked every year and shoved into the flesh trade racket. Around 90 per cent of sex trafficking is carried in the interior parts of the country. The children of commercial sex workers (CSWs) are in a vulnerable state. There are massive records of women and children working in prostitution of which 3,00,000 and 5,00,000 commercial sex workers in India are children, which approximately comes to around 40 per cent. In Mumbai, one of country's oldest, Asia’s largest red light area, commonly known as Kamathipura is located at Falkland Road. For the children of CSWs, this locality is merely their playground, and also their source of livelihood. At Kamathipura, it is a common sight to see children running behind cabs and pedestrians to lure customers to the narrow lanes for their moms or madams, thought it was not new for the visitors to see children of sex workers at the age of five, begging customers to come to the brothels where their mothers are working. After watching all this pitiful conditions of children, Priti Patkar who visited this area as student of social worker thought that there is immense need of change in this area. Priti along with her husband Pravin Patkar pledged to educate every child of the red light area and to bring back their childhood. Since 1986, Prerana, an NGO, is working in Mumbai’s red light areas to prevent second-generation prostitution and protect women and children from being trafficked. The first ever Night Care Center in the world was conceptualised to provide shelter for children of CSWs who are victims of human trafficking in red lights areas. Priti Patkar, founder of Prerana,

hree days after Mumbai Police beefed up security in selected areas in South Mumbai post a threat message on social media went viral, locals seem to be more positively concerned and cautious with everything. This was seen on Monday afternoon when a brown-coloured briefcase was found in the middle of Mumbai Samachar Marg near Janmabhoomi Bhavan in Fort. The police immediately alerted the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) as the briefcase was enough to scare the people who were seen chanting Hanuman Chalisa and 'Ganpati Bappa Morya', while some were also seen yelling 'Marenge toh saath main marenge'. However, the BDS team found that briefcase had only some papers and bank documents. A local shop owner Raes Shaikh A bomb expert inspects an unattended briefcase lying on a busy street at Mumbai said, “When I noticed that a bag was Samachar Marg in Fort, on Monday.

lying unattended in the middle of road, I remembered the threat which was given. I immediately called the police and informed them. It was very scary as people started yelling that there is a bomb and we are going to die. The atmosphere around was tense and nobody know what to do so people started yelling Hanuman Chalisa and I started reading dua's.” Raju Yadav, peanut seller, who was present in the Mumbai Samachar lane said, “Most of the people ran away thinking there was a bomb in the briefcase but when the bomb squad arrived I realised something was wrong. However, there were some documents in the briefcase. The immediate reaction of the police and the bomb squad is commendable.” aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

Swamy wants postage stamp after the late Sena chief

n a bid to revive his more than three decade old ties with the Shiv Sena, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy yesterday in his tweet announced that he had written to the Union Government asking for a special commemorative stamp be released in honour of the late Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray. Coming as it does from Swamy who has now joined the BJP fold late last year few eyebrows have been raised in the political circles here. It may be recalled that soon after the October 2014 assembly election results were announced, the BJP top brass in New Delhi had deputed Swamy to bring the estranged Sena around and agree it to join the BJPled government which was still a minority government then. It may be recalled then that Swamy after meeting Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had stated that in the

Besides that Swamy's ties with the Thackeray family have not been new. During the Janata Party days, Swamy had twice contested the Lok Sabha elections once in 1977 and in 1980 from the Mumbai North-East constituency. Swamy's demand comes at a time when the Sena is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year of its foundation. Meanwhile, Sena MP Sanjay Raut too yesterday echoed the party demand for naming the Mumbai Coastal Road project after the late Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray. He remarked that 'come what may the Coastal Road project shall be named after the late Sena chief and that no one could stop it from happening'. Senior Sena Minister for Subramaniam Swamy Public Works Department Eknath Shinde too argued that the name of larger interest of Hindutva both the the late Sena chief is synonymous BJP and Sena should come together. with the history of the state. ormer Mumbai Mayor and Shiv Sena member Shubha Raul raised an issue that has been plaguing the city for a very long time. In the debate at General Body Meeting on Wednesday at BMC, it was discussed that the issue of environmental hazards because of excessive pollution has been neglected for a long time now. According to BMC Act of 1888, Section 61 (AB) issues related to the forests, environment, and nature conservation are the responsibility of the civic body. Every year the environmental department of BMC prepares an annual report that shows the situation of pollution across the city. However, Raul has alleged that despite reports submitted every year, no attention is being paid to air, water or noise pollution. According to her, the laboratory at Worli has been vacant because of the shortage of staff and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board should take this matter into serious consideration. Another laboratory at Khar has been relocated but the new location does not have enough computers and equipments as per requirement. “This department should be equipped with high technology. All the smart cities across the globe have special departments assigned to only keep a check on the pollution control. In 1981, High Court advised the BMC to establish the environment department under Solid Waste Management department,” Raul said. She also mentioned that gas chromatographs had been bought by the BMC and their warranty period shall end soon. But because of lack of space these equipments have not been set up at required places.Raul and few other corporators also alleged that BMC was

Addressing the media, Bhide said, “We will give out civil work contracts in September worth Rs 11,000 crore for 32.5 km long Colaba-Bandra-Seepz corridor. The technical evaluation will be done in the mid of September and then

contracts will be given.” However, it appears that the MMRC is not sure about the decision of metro car shed in Aarey colony. “The decision of the car shed will be taken by the government. However, the detailed report will be submitted soon,” said Madan. The consultant to prepare the rehabilitation of the metro Project Affected People (PAP) in Girgaum and Kalbadevi will be appointed in 15 days. “The process of rehabilitation will be completed in four months once the consultant is appointed,” added Madan. The work on Metro III project is expected to begin in March next year.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh was present in the meeting and assured that the matter will be looked into. “I assure the members present that chromatographs will be assigned at few places and the environment will be monitored correctly henceforth. The instrument required to measure lead in the air, however cannot be set up immediately,” Deshmukh said.Prakash Patil, Head of Solid Waste Management department at BMC said that a report was presented in front of the corporators and the shortcomings have been taken a note of. “There are issues because the laboratory at Khar was in a dilapidated condition, but it is being relocated. Also, observation centres are going to be established at more places, now that we know the shortcomings. New equipments will also be set up at the new location of the building so the situation will come under control in some time.” Patil said.

he special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Monday issued summons to the witnesses for recording of evidence in journalist J Dey murder case. "The court today issued summons to some 10 witnesses who will start deposing in the case as prosecution witnesses," said defence lawyer S.M. Deshpande. The recording of evidence will start later this month, reports PTI. The court had framed charges against 11 accused including the journalist Jigna Vora on June 8. The charges (against various accused) include being a part of the gang run by fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan and hatching a conspiracy to kill Dey who was shot dead in suburban Powai on June 11, 2011. Vora is accused of passing on

key information such as the number plate of Dey's motorcycle and his address to Rajan. The police arrested her in November 2011 and she was granted bail on July 2012. Police had in December 2011 filed the charge sheet against Satish Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia (all arrested). Later, a separate charge sheet was filed against Vora. According to police, Rajan, who was upset with Dey over two articles written by him which purportedly portrayed the fugitive don in bad light, ordered the journalist's killing. The charge sheet claims that Vora had instigated Rajan to kill him, owing to her own professional rivalry with Dey.

Kamothe missing girl ran away with Rs.10,000, says her mother By Abhitash Singh

I

n Navi Mumbai within 12 hours after the funeral of Franshela Vaz, an 8-year-old girl from Airoli who was kidnapped and murdered by her own uncle, another kidnapping took place in Kamothe where the needle of suspicion points to the girl's stepfather and his friend. The mother of the missing girl lodged a complaint of kidnapping on Saturday and changed her statement on Monday, saying that her elder daughter had run away with Rs 10,000 from her purse. On Saturday, at around 2 p.m. 10-yearold girl Priyanka Gupta was not found by her mother in the room of the building where they were residing. She went ahead and lodged a kidnapping complaint at Kamothe Police Station. The victim girl, her minor sibling and her parents who are hailing from Uttar Pradesh came toKamothe last week. The step father of

girl is electrician and he came to the city when his friend said that there are plenty of job opportunities for electricians in the city. Speaking to ADC, Suresh Menage deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Crime said, “After the complaint was lodged by missing girl's mother on Saturday we swung into action and formed eight squad team to arrest the culprit and locate the missing girl. We have registered a case and have filed an FIR u/s 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).” On Monday, the missing girl's mother changed her statement, saying, “My daughter has run away from home along with Rs. 10,000 and she was last seen by one auto rickshaw driver in the same area with a bag carrying the cash. On the day of incident the missing girl's stepfather and his friend were not in the area. So she hasn't been kidnapped by the stepfather and his friend.”

T

hree days after the 4,500 resident doctors' stir across Maharashtra ended after the state government raised their stipend and assured better security arrangements, the Bombay High Court on Monday sought to know from the state government what mechanism it has evolved to prevent indefinite strikes declared time and again by doctors across the state while claiming that their demands have not been fulfilled. It will be recalled that the patients, though, suffered in public hospitals as many were referred to private hospitals and discharged abruptly; surgeries were cancelled too during last week's strike. The Maharashtra Associa-

tion of Resident Doctors (MARD) had presented the state with a charter of 10 demands and had discussed the issue earlier this week with government officials. However later, the Maha-

DOCTORS’ STRIKE rashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) called off the strike after education minister Vinod Tawde assured that their stipend will be increased by Rs 5,000 from Rs 43,000 at present, with effect from August. While hearing a PIL filed by advocate Datta Mane, the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A K Menon, the PIL sought a direction to the government to invoke provisions of the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) against

the doctors, if the strike was not called off. The high court was on Monday informed by the government that the strike has been called off and hence the PIL can be disposed of. However, the High Court took cognizance of the sufferings of the patients and their relatives in hospitals across Maharashtra during the strike where the bench was not satisfied and observed that time and again doctors are going on strike which in turn causes problems for the patients. “We need to know what mechanism has the state government evolved to avoid such strikes? In the past also we had directed the government to come up with a redressal mechanism. We need the state government to file an affidavit to this in a week's time.”

courtrooms, in that case as also for security reasons, or for want of adequate police escorts, their physical production before the court is being avoided by resorting to video conferencing. Such methods are a step forward in improvement of our criminal justice system.” Criminal lawyer Prakash Wagh, has a different view which is not in favour of this newly passed resolution. He comments, “Basically this facility has been around for a while to make an easy way to conduct trial when the the accused is not present in the court. But the main problem is the courtroom atmosphere is missing for the witness.

This paves a way for the an unscrupulous witness to lie in all comfort. Also the judges who have some idea that the witness is lying cannot confront him. If the lying witness is in the courtroom, he might blurt out the truth, when grilled by the judge.” Lawyer Mr Sushan Kunjuraman views resonated with that of Wagh. He stated, “Videoconferencing should be made applicable only in cases in which the accused is not cooperating with the court. Besides protests again the objections made in the court would become difficult, being conducive to incoherence in the courtroom,” he concluded.

t a time when the state government has put a major thrust on e-governance, a section of politicians in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) are making intense efforts to derail the successfully operational e-tendering system by lobbying for manual submission (hard copies) of documents in the concerned departments. An official recommendation to this effect was tabled in the recently conducted general body meet. However, taking a tough stand on the issue, municipal commissioner Achyut Hange has straightaway rejected the proposal. Infamous for corruption, malpractices and political-official-contractor nexus, the MBMC in an attempt to ensure transparency in allocation of work contracts had introduced an etendering system in 2010. Moreover, the MBMC is amongst the few civic bodies which can boast of having

automated receipt generating system for initial tender fees. At present the MBMC has two online portals on which contactors and suppliers on the virtue of digital certificates can not only electronically download and upload tender documents, but also make secured online payments towards Earnest Money Deposits (EMD) and track the status of tenders. Apart from this the bidders also have an option of remitting payments through the seven banks approved by the MBMC. Not pleased with the revolutionary changes, some self-centred politicians on the behest of the powerful contractor lobby have been

making attempts to enforce manual submission of documents, this on the basis of a resolution passed on 14, December, 2012. “Transparency is the biggest benefit of the e-tender system and any attempts to scuttle its basic structure will not be allowed nor tolerated. In fact we are in the process of introducing further applications to further enhance transparency and security in tender procurement,” Hange said. The online system has put an end to tender-capturing by a handful of powerful contractors, however manual submissions would once again reveal the bidders.

Cover-up operation? M

r. V. Thampu, principal of the Delhi’s Stephens College, is shielding a professor who has allegedly molested a student. He has done his best to persuade the girl to withdraw her complaint. To say the least, he has been unsympathetic towards the girl. The students have become very angry and are holding wild and loud demonstrations outside the college. The cover-up operation has not done any good to this college. Elsewhere in the country just a complaint of molestation by a girl results in the arrest of the culprit. There was this case of Tarun Tejpal who was arrested and kept in jail for months just on the complaint of a woman. She was molested in a lift. The hapless man is still languishing in jail without trial. The police should have been more sympathetic to the student and acted on her behalf when a complaint was made. The principal should have been more honest and sided with the girl. He is still trying with a plan perhaps to bring about a settlement. The prestige of his institution has gone down. Demonstrations have been taking place every day. The professor seems to have done a wrong thing. He should have admitted his guilt and faced the consequences. By not doing this, his reputation and that of the principal and the college has done down.

HE war between India and Pakistan in 1965 is 50 years old. Even today, hostilities are attributed to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, then foreign minister. This is correct. General Mohammad Ayub Khan, who was heading Pakistan at that time, admitted in an interview that he did not want to disturb peace, however uneasy. When I checked with Bhutto, he did not deny his role. In defence he said, he felt that if there was a time when Pakistan could defeat India, it was now. He argued that India had only a few ordinance factories and “we had an edge over you because of the US military assistance.” Pakistan’s hand was confirmed by Lieutenant-Colonel Bernard E. Anderson of the United States Air Force who, in a letter to Time dated October 1965, said: “…In April, I returned from Pakistan. We all knew then that this fight was coming: The Pakistanis were painting their ground equipment battle grey over the original yellow, were building revetment for their aircraft, etc…”

“So, it would, as a patriotic prudence, be better to say, all right, let us finish this problem and come to terms and come to a settlement. It has been an unfortunate thing. So, that is why up to 1965, I thought that with this edge that we had we could have morally justified it. Also, because India was committed to self-determination and it was not being resolved and we had this situation. But now this position does not exist. I know it does not exist. I know better than anyone else that it does not exist and that it will not exist in the future also." The 1965 war is a watershed in the relations between India and Pakistan. Till then there was estrangement but no hostility. Big war gates were installed at the Attari-Wagah border. With a rigid visa system introduced, even the limited informal trade on the border came to a halt.

Voice of fundamentalists

Bhutto’s mujahids Pakistan';s attack in 1965 began with hundreds of infiltrators — Ayub called them Bhutto’s mujahids (liberators) — sneaking into Kashmir. The report of the intrusion first appeared in the Indian press on August 9, 1965, along with Ayub's assurance to Kewal Singh, while accepting his credentials as India's high commissioner in Rawalpindi, that Pakistan would reciprocate every move from India for better cooperation. He justified that infiltration into Kashmir was not the same thing as infiltration into India. The ‘uprising’ that Pakistan expected failed because local Kashmiris did not help the infiltrators. Bhutto called them hatos (labourers), with utmost contempt. When I interviewed Bhutto, his explanation, as recorded, is: "There was a time when militarily, in terms of the big push, in terms of armour, we were superior to India because of the military assistance we were getting and that was the position up to 1965. Now, the Kashmir dispute was not being resolved and its resolution was also essential for the settlement of our disputes and as it was not being resolved peacefully and we had this military advantage, we were getting blamed for it.

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar The then popular leader Sheikh Abdulla could have aligned with Pakistan. But he preferred secular India to Islamic Pakistan when he found that it was not possible for him to stay independent. Sufism was what the Kashmiris followed and they found secularism akin. The Sheikh was able to have a special status for the state. The Indian Constitution spelled it out in Article 370. Except three subjects — Defence, Foreign Affairs and Communications — the Indian parliament had no power to legislate without the consent of the state legislature. The undertakings given at that time are sacred and cannot be written off by the people who think differently. The state had adopted even a separate constitution to make it clear that it would not compromise on its auton-

‘There is always scope to do better’ T

HERE is no doubt that a man is born with a plan to be accomplished in life – not only with instincts, with merits or gifts, but with the whole plan of how his life is to be. There is a saying in the East that one can read the life of an infant from looking at its feet; even the little feet of the infant show the sign of the plan that it is to follow through life. There is a story that explains a little more the relation between destiny and free will. A seer was working as a porter in a rich man's house. Now there is a belief in the East that no sooner a child is born than angels come and write on its forehead the whole plan of destiny. But this seer-porter was a wonderful man. At the door, as soon as the angels came, he said, 'Stop, where are you going? I am the porter here! You cannot go in unless you promise to tell me about the plan'. The angels told him; he was a strong porter, he would not let them go without telling him. And so every time a child was born in that house he took down the notes of what was going to happen. Then the parents passed away. Theirs had been a rich house, but for some reason or other the money was lost. The children were left without shelter, and it fell upon the shoulders of the old porter to look after them with what little means he had. As soon as they were old enough the chil-

omy. Watering it down now will amount to betrayal of the confidence which the people of Jammu and Kashmir had reposed in New Delhi. If any change had to be made, it has to be done by them. The Indian Union which the state had joined cannot amend its powers without the consent of the state’s people. Those who agitate for the deletion of Article 370 do not realize that they may reopen the entire question of Kashmir’s accession to India. The Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir endorsed it on the basis of a special status. If any amendment is to be effected, it has to be done by the state’s Constituent Assembly. Neither the state assembly nor the Centre’s parliament can usurp the power which vests in a Constituent Assembly. Is New Delhi willing to risk the entire status of the state by convening another Constituent Assembly, which may also be illegal?

dren went to different countries with what little they had to spend. One day this servant of the house thought that it was his duty to go and see how they were getting on. Also for a seer it is most interesting to see the material phenomenon of the same thing he had seen inwardly as a vision. That comes as a satisfaction to a seer; it is naturally amusing for him when he sees on the outer plane the same

MATTER & SPIRIT things he had felt inside himself. It gives him the greatest fun, the greatest amusement. So the porter went and saw one child of the house working as a horse groom. He was very sorry to see the child of a house, where so many horses had been kept, in this situation. He went to the young man and told him, 'It could not be avoided, it was meant that you should be so. Only, I want to give you one advice, because it makes me sad to think that you, in whose house were so many horses, now have to work as a horse groom. Here is a little money, take it and go to another city and try to work as a horse trainer. Horses of rich men may be given to you to train them, and I am sure you will be successful'. The young man asked, 'Can I do anything else?' 'No, that

In the meanwhile, the Kashmiris have come to develop a different thinking. They do not want either India or Pakistan be the arbiter. They themselves want to decide what is suited to their genus. The voice of fundamentalists may be loud but the Kashmiris want the pandits to be part of their culture as has been the case for centuries. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has shown a middle path by giving an equal space to the Hindu-majority Jammu in the state’s affairs. But he has delineated, in the process, a line between the Muslim-majority Valley and Jammu. This is what a tall leader like the Sheikh could have done to evoke support in the entire state, including Ladakh. The pigmy leaders of today can find a formula to placate different communities, but they cannot bring back the atmosphere of pluralism which prevailed once. Islamic fundamentalism has gained ground in the Valley and Hindutva in Jammu because the sufi ideology has got polluted. Before acceding to India, the Sheikh sent his confidantes to Pakistan to assess the mood. He came to the conclusion that pluralism was the best option for his people. One remark attributed to the Sheikh was that he did not like Pakistan because too many Muslims were there. is the only door out. Perhaps you would have been a horse groom all your life if I had not told you this. Anything else you cannot do; this is the only path for you. Do your work in a different way and you will have success'. The young man did so and was successful. The porter then went to the other son and asked, 'What is your condition?' 'My condition is that I wander about in the forest and bring back some birds. I sell them in the city and hardly get any money to live'. In those days there was a fashion among kings to keep a certain bird as a pet; that bird was called Shahbaz, the king's bird. The porter said, 'You must not look for game birds, look for this bird Shahbaz'. The boy replied, 'But if I cannot find it, should I then rather starve and die?' 'You will have better luck if only you listen to me. You need not change your job of catching birds, but catch Shahbaz. You can sell it for millions. That is one you should catch'. This story makes us realize what the seer does. A definite plan was made for those two young men; at the same time there was scope for free will to work – but within that plan. If one did not think of this scope one would go on in the lines of the plan and continue to live miserably. Seeing changes the scope. It is a great lesson and those who can understand this lesson can benefit immensely by it: seeing there is a plan and at the same time that there is scope to do better, and much better – yet within the plan. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

THE mystery around Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh took a new turn after a journalist with the TV Today group fell ill and died in suspicious circumstances. The ‘smoke’ is obvious and natural result of ‘fire’ somewhere. So were the undesired riots. How could the most humane and unbiased former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee forgot this vital point? cumstances thus making the it the most mysterious case in the crime history but state Govt seems not to be overly concerned by the magnitude of tragedy. Out of 2500 people accused in the scam, only 2000 could be arrested and tried but key people who could have been crucial to the outcome of this case have died since one by one. Even the son of Governor also died mysteriously but state Govt has so far not entrusted this case to CBI, for reasons known to itself. Had there been different Govt in the center other than BJP, case could have taken a sharp turn and investigations could have speed rolled but BJP Govt in its bid to save its Govt is turning blind eye. Integrity of state Govt is in doubt whether it could be able to speed track the case and secure the lives of accused. Modi Govt must hand over the the case to CBI immediately and matter should be taken off state Govt's hands who seems inefficient to handle this.

Though the Bombay High Court’s decision is a wise decision, the schools should be permitted to levy a fine on those students who carry extra school books and school articles. CHALLENGE

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 7, 2015

ACCEPTED! Have you ever decided to start working out in earnest, only to lose motivation midway? That’s exactly why social media websites are flooded with posts about various fitness challenges! They make exercising fun and help you stay motivated to reach your goal. But do they work? That’s what Sara Shah & Yamini Walia set off to find out. They also spoke to an expert to see how effective these fitness challenges really are

F

itness challenges are on the rise — the 30-day ab challenge and the 90-day Zumba challenge are good examples of that! These challenges combine conventional exercises with new-age fitness apps to keep you fit and motivated. But, are you really going to get the desired results? We spoke to Mamtaa Joshi, a fitness consultant from Orange Tree Image Consultants, about the effectiveness of these workouts.

The 30-Day ab challenge The thought of achieving rock-hard abs in just 30 days is tempting. So, it’s no surprise that the 30-day ab challenge is one of the most popular fitness challenges today. This has been designed to tone your core muscles and build full body strength. As the name suggests, your abs take top priority in this challenge, which involves performing four or more different ab exercises every day. You can download a chart for the challenge off the internet and it will provide you with information about the exercises that you need to perform. Each day is different and the amount of time you spend working on your abs increases as days go by. The best part about this challenge is that you don’t need any equipment to get you through the month. Mamtaa Joshi, fitness and wellness expert at Orange Tree Image

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 7, 2015 >> For a lot of people, challenges with a deadline are far more motivating then working out everyday

The SqUaT challenge The 30-day squat challenge includes performing one exercise every day — a squat. The amount of time that you spend holding the squat is gradually increased everyday in order to help you strengthen your core. This is so that completing the final day of the challenge becomes an achievable task. Mamtaa says, “Squat challenges have become increasingly popular over the past year. The focus should be on doing fewer, better-quality reps that get tougher over time — you can use heavier weights to increase the intensity. Apart from squats, you should also perform other lower-body exercises that will tone your glutes and thighs.” In terms of how effective or long-lasting the challenge is, Mamtaa explains, “This particular challenge does have a lasting effect. It targets a larger muscle group, so working on it may be difficult at first. But, you will get evenly toned if you’re dedicated.”

cOlD PreSSeD JUice challenge Remember when everyone was going on a juice diet to lose weight or increase their immunity. This juice detox, or cleanse, achieved a fair amount of popularity and was even considered to be pretty effective. The challenge requires you to drink raw, cold pressed juices that serve as your daily source of nourishment. Mamtaa tells us, “This challenge is meant primarily to detoxify your stomach, and it does clean it out. However, sometimes, it is difficult to avoid consuming coffee or the starchy food that we are accustomed to eating every day. However, if you remain consistent, this challenge will work wonders!”

Mamtaa cautions, “It is important to maintain proper posture while performing Zumba. Also, wear proper workout footwear.”

The PlanK challenge The plank challenge is similar to the 30-day ab challenge — it centres on just one exercise — the plank. It involves 30 days of performing the plank with very few variations, for an increasing amount of time. The initial eight days are spent doing a basic plank in an incline position (leaning against a wall, chair or anything that supports you), which is perfect for beginners. As you get stronger, the next 22 days will be spent doing planks on the floor with your palms flat on the ground. Speaking about the challenge, Mamtaa tells us, “Core exercises are a great place to start if you are new to working out, because most core moves are pretty simple, require little or no equipment, can be performed at home and can be learned in minutes! In this challenge, each week will get progressively harder. This exercise will boost your body’s stability. But, don’t worry if progress is slow. Just keep working towards your goal and stay motivated.”

The 90-Day ZUmba challenge Zumba is being recognised as an effective workout that will keep you fit. So much so that several fitness centres have started conducting special Zumba classes to promote fitness. Mamtaa tells us, “It is like taking the work out of your workout, because the challenge requires you to mix low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the catchy music takes over, you will understand why Zumba group exercises are often called exercise in disguise.” Since the dance session is quite entertaining, you may not realise how effective it is in helping you stay fit. However,

PeOPle WhO TOOK UP The challenge We spoke to a few people in the city, who undertook these fitness challenges, to learn their side of the story Copywriter, Sanjit Roy, decided to take up the ab challenge. However, it didn’t seem to work for him. He says, “Apart from all the exercising, I had to watch my diet too. But, a major part of my time was wasted looking at pictures of other people’s progress. I know this was supposed to motivate me. But all it did was make me lazy!” Drishti Valecha, student, has taken up several challenges in the past and feels that these challenges put a lot of pressure on you, but in a good way. “When I post something online, I’m portraying myself to the world and it keeps me dedicated. And, looking back, achieving something out of this feels awesome. Also, I might have ended up inspiring someone. Who knows?” Drishti Kaul, a media professional, tried the Nike Training App for a healthy body. She tells us, “What’s really helpful about the Nike Training App is that you can watch demonstrations if you want to find out how to do a particular exercise. You can select the duration of the workout, which varies from 15 to 45 minutes! After completing the workout you’re assigned a score and a medal, which helps you monitor your fitness level. The ease of working out is what works best for the app. I don’t think you burn as many calories, but it is a good option if you are travelling or have space constraints.”

Megha Iyer, a public relations professional, recently started following Blogilates on Instagram. She explains, “It is a 30-day split challenge and is a bundle of fun and fitness. It encourages you to push your limits and do better every single day to reach your desired fitness goals. It is also an amazing way to spice up your regular fitness routine by constantly setting fitness goals for yourself and accomplishing them. I am eager to see what kind of result the programme will have for me. It’s been quite effective so far.” Fitness blogger, Riya Patel, tried the 60-day fitness challenge, which is based on the 30-day ab challenge. “It basically consists of various routines that work your abs, arms, bottom and legs. It also includes a 5km run every day. It is extremely strenuous, time consuming and requires good stamina, but once you get into fitness mode, it is the best feeling ever! The results were amazing. I lost almost 6 kilos with the challenge and I have some advice for anyone thinking about trying it — you need to follow a high protein diet. It really does help! The worst thing that happened to me was suffering from running blisters, which were a real bummer as it happened just before a marathon I had registered for. So, unfortunately, I couldn’t take part. With challenges like these, remember not to get so carried away that you start missing your meals. Never starve yourself!”

your guide to

healthy monsoon eating We may tell you this every year, but there’s a really good reason that we do! Monsoon snacks can be tempting, but indulging in them isn’t always a good idea. So, if you missed the memo last year, this refresher guide to monsoon indulgences will benefit you, says Katha Nauriyal

T

he monsoon brings with it a palette of new flavours and spices every year. And food invariably becomes our go-to option to cosy up with during the damp weather. While some food items serve as treats you can indulge in, others pose health risks that we are often oblivious to. So, to keep you fit all season, see what you should be eating and what you should be avoiding this monsoon.

FOOd tO avOid It’s raining feasts, and we often pay little heed to the health risks they bring with them. “After the scorching summer, rains sure bring happiness. But, they also causes health issues due to an imbalance of dosha, which according to ayurveda is a balance of three energies (Vata, Pitta and cough) that our body comprises. This imbalance leads to a fall in our digestive capacity as well as immunity. As people are prone to ailments such as food poisoning and indigestion, it is imperative to take certain precautions in order to keep our body healthy this season,” says Kanchan Patwardhan, clinical nutritionist consultant at Kanchan’s House of Health & Nutrition and Arogya Hospital.

Pakoras! While, your food cravings are exaggerated this season, tempting food can be the worst! And, what’s more tempting than a platter of hot pakoras? But, did you know these oily treats can hinder your digestion? Sure, no pakoras taste as heavenly as roadside options, but they are also less hygienic, since they are prepared in an open environment that can cause infections. While it’s safer to cook pakoras and other fried snacks like bhajiyas and samosas in your own kitchen, Kanchan adds, “It’s still not advisable to eat them because during this season, our digestion capacity drops and pakoras are made of besan, which leads to gastric issues.”

Chaat to chuck Here goes another favourite out of the window! Put your paani puri, ragda pattis, bhel and all that street chaat on hold till the advent of the next season. As innocent as they may look, chaat is often made with contaminated water. Additionally, the chutneys that are used often cause health issues such as jaundice and amebiasis. “Chutneys made with green coriander rots very fast due to excessive moisture during the monsoon, and may contain microorganisms such as bacteria fungi, which

begin to grow on them. Amoeba also develops rapidly on rotten coriander,” Kanchan adds.

Meat & seafood Have you been planning to take a break from meat? This is probably the best time! Red meat in particular, is heavy and difficult to digest. So to curb your cravings, binge on healthier options like chicken soup and stew. Additionally, cold chicken salads are also light, and easy to digest. However, remember to make sure that these are cleaned well and are consumed fresh. Similarly, seafood should also be consumed with a dose of caution. Monsoon is the breeding season for most fish and fresh catches are rare.

FOOd tO enJOY While, there are countless food items you should avoid consuming during this time of the year, monsoon also brings about a tray of healthy and flavoursome options for you to indulge in.

Warm up the beverages Warm beverages are a great source of nutrition and have several health benefits. You can choose from an array of herbal teas with lemon, honey or ginger. “Tea stimulates gastric fire and appetite. It is a very good remedy for arthritis patients as it helps reduce stiffness and inflammation in your joints and muscles. Ginger tea, especially, is a very good remedy for the common cough, cold and other respiratory problems and reduces morning sickness,” says Kanchan. Similarly, soup and rasam increase gastric juices, which act as health boosters during monsoon. “The ingredients in the rasam, especially tamarind and tomatoes, are rich in antioxidants as well as vitamin C. So, they protect us from oxidative damages and prevent coughs and colds. Also, black pepper content not only helps us lose weight, it also removes toxins by making you sweat, helping your body to produce more urine while increasing metabolism,” she adds.

Bhutta — the ideal monsoon snack! With a dash of salt and lemon, bhutta, or roasted corn, can be the best comfort food this season. It also has countless health benefits. Since it’s dry, it reduces water retention. The soluble and insoluble fibre keeps your stomach healthy. “Loaded with vitamins, these treats protect you from kidney and heart problems,” Kanchan signs off.

« KNOW MORE FACTS ABOUT CHEWING GUM

We have all mercilessly popped chewing gum in all colours, shapes and sizes when we were children. But, if that was a habit you haven’t gotten rid of yet, Purva Indulkar gives you the pros and cons that you need to remember

T

he University of Reading recently concluded in a study that one of the most bizarre benefits of chewing gum is if a song has gotten stuck in your head, popping gum can make it stop! Who would’ve thought that your secret stash would one day help rid our brains of Iggy Azalea. But, chewing gum also contains ingredients that can adversely impact your dental hygiene.

advantages

n It improves memory According to

psychologists, chewing gum improves memory and enhances cognitive powers. As you chew, the activity in a part of your brain known as the hippocampus, increases. This is also the region of your brain that is responsible for storing information and recalling it when necessary.

n It reduces symptoms of stress If patting

your heart and saying ‘All is well’ is too filmy for you, just pop a chewing gum when you are stressed. The act of chewing gives you an outlet to effectively release nervous energy, frustration and irritation.

n It helps to manage weight While one

serving of gum has 5-10 calories, the process of chewing it helps you loose 11 calories.

n It increases wakefulness For sleeping

beauties who are forced to work a morning shift, chewing gum is a better bet than coffee to keep you alert. Chewing stimulates your nerves, activating the region of your brain attached to arousal, while also increasing blood flow.

disadvantages

n It may increase your junk food intake If you

pop sugar-free gum when you are craving something delicious, it may distract you from your hunger. But, the minty flavour in most chewing gum makes fruits and vegetables taste bitter, naturally making you pick potato wafers and candy over healthy meals.

n It may cause gastrointestinal problems

Chewing gum tells your body to prepare itself to digest food. So, the body secretes the necessary enzymes and acids. But, they have no food to digest, causing an overproduction of stomach acid, which results in bloating. n It causes tooth damage Though sugar-free

gums have xylitol that fights cavities, they still contain acidic flavours and preservatives that can cause dental erosion. This process can literally dissolve your teeth over time.

n It contain sheep products Chewing gum

contains lanolin, a waxy substance that is derived from sheep’s wool. Although it’s not particularly harmful, it’s not appetising either.

« QUICK QUIZ TO KNOW YOURSELF

>> Forgetting the name of a colleague you work with on a regular basis, is a serious issue

Mostly As It seems as though you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Weight gain, inexplicable stress, an inactive libido and tiredness are all believed to be symptoms of adrenal fatigue. People who lead stressful lives are usually affected by the condition. But, don’t just jump to conclusions. Get yourself examined by a doctor and read our box below to find out how to combat adrenal fatigue. Mostly Bs So, you’re not dead tired — good for you! Sure, there are days when getting out of bed is a drag, but it’s nothing that a cup of coffee can’t solve. You make sure that you’re eating healthy and that you get a good night’s rest. Keep up the good work! However, if you know anyone who is unexplainably tired, look out for symptoms of this problem and let them know.

ARE YOU JUST FORGETFUL OR ILL?

You may not always remember what you had for breakfast yesterday or what day it is, but sometimes these minor memory lapses can be the forerunners of a major illness. Purva Indulkar helps you find out if you’re just forgetful or if it’s something more serious 1. What kind of information do you usually forget? a) The name of a colleague you interact with every day. b) What you had for lunch last Tuesday. 2. Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought that someone else was staring back at you? a) Yes. b) No. 3. Have you ever forgotten the way to your house? a) Yes. b) No. Lime juice Add the juice of one lemon to a litre of water and let it sit for about 45 minutes. This won’t kill all the bacteria, but it will get rid of most cholera bacteria and a few other germs as well.

1

4. Do you ever find yourself somewhere and wonder how you got there? a) Yes. b) No. 5. Have you ever forgotten a recipe for a dish that you have been making for years? a) Yes. b) No. 6. Do you often freeze in the middle of a conversation with someone because you’ve forgotten what you were saying? a) Yes. b) No.

3

Sand filter This type of filter consists of layers of sand and gravel and allows a bioactive layer to grow on top of the sand, which reduces the amount of diseasecausing organisms in the water.

Tincture of iodine A mix of about 2% iodine and 47% alcohol can be used to disinfect water. You will need about five drops for every litre. Let it sit for at least half an hour before drinking it. However, people with thyroid problems, women over 50 and pregnant women should consult their doctor before resorting to this method.

2 Ceramic filter These filters can be made from fired clay utensils, coated with colloidal silver, which help kill germs. They are small and easy to use, and rely on pores in the ceramic material that filter out germs and debris.

5

Mostly As First of all, don’t panic! It is common for people to suffer from memory lapses as they grow older. It’s possible to live with it if preventive measures are taken. But to do so, you’ll need to visit a doctor for a checkup. Your forgetfulness may have started as a minor problem, but it has begun to affect your daily routine and is hindering your regular activities. Consult a doctor for advice on the steps that you’ll need to take in order to manage the issue. Mostly Bs You do suffer from forgetfulness, but it isn’t severe enough for you to worry about. It’s natural for us to forget information that our brains deem irrelevant. This helps us make space for the facts that matter. In order to improve your memory,

eat green leafy vegetables, foods with omega-3 fatty acids, coffee and spices. If you are memorising something important — for an exam or a speech, for instance — revisit the matter at regular intervals. If you want to learn something, do it right before going to bed so that when you do sleep, the information is properly encoded in your memory.

Use the power of the sun Fill clear glass bottles up to the half mark with water, screw on the caps and shake vigorously. This will cause air bubbles to form, which will help disinfect the water quicker. Fill the bottles to the top and keep them in direct sunlight for at least six hours. If the weather is cloudy, leave them there for two days.

Make sure you’re drinking safe waTer! The monsoons bring with them respite from summer heat, but they increase the risk of suffering from diseases caused by water-borne pathogens. While there are no clear-cut solutions if the water you’re supplied isn’t very safe, Anindra Siqueira tells you what you can do to ensure that the water you’re drinking is a little safer

6

Use a chlorine solution Although chlorine is generally reserved for disinfecting water on a large scale, it can be used at home too. You will have to add two drops of 5% chlorine bleach for every litre of water to be disinfected.

Boil water thoroughly Even if you use filtered water, boiling (avoid tap water!) is the best way to ensure safe drinking water. But, make sure that you let the water boil for at least a minute or two before taking it off the stove.

7

DRAINED! Have you been so tired and fatigued lately that even a good night’s rest can’t get you up and about? If so, Sara Shah suggests you take this quiz to see whether you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue

I

4

« Ten ways To:

>> If you’re so tired that you can’t get out bed, you may have adrenal fatigue

Charcoal filter A charcoal filter is easy to make and can remove most of the germs present in your water. You will need two containers (bottles or buckets) and will have to layer the charcoal in between layers of fine, coarse sand.

9

f you think that we’re talking about something connected to your adrenal glands, you’re right! Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe extreme tiredness that results from poorly working adrenal glands. The main cause of adrenal fatigue is stress — both physical and mental. However, this isn’t a scientifically proven medical condition — it is currently just a theory. Our adrenal glands produce hormones, such as cortisol, which helps lower stress. The theory is that if an individual leads a stressful life, they may suffer from adrenal fatigue. And even though the theory hasn’t been proven, it has garnered a lot of support. So, take our quiz to see if you suffer from any of its symptoms.

2) You’ve thought about it, but fail to find the reason for your tiredness. a) True. b) False.

1) Your tiredness is beyond the realms of reason. a) True. b) False.

5) You experience frequent body aches. a) True. b) False.

3) Even getting out of bed is something you don’t seem to have the energy for. a) True. b) False. 4) Your emotions are at an all-time high and feeling overwhelmed seems to come easily to you. a) True. b) False.

COMBATING ADRENAL FATIGUE Due to a lack of evidence, doctors often dismiss adrenal fatigue and test you for other issues. However, since the measures taken to combat adrenal fatigue are completely natural and don’t require much forethought, there’s no harm in trying them out! Solar still A solar still is an easy way to get distilled water. You will need two bowls of different sizes and clear plastic wrap to make one yourself. Keep it out in the sun and you should have clean drinking water in a short while.

Get enough sleep

It is essential to get enough sleep, especially if you suspect that you suffer from adrenal fatigue. If you’re a woman, you may require 8-10 hours of sleep every night, because the period between night and day has a restorative effect on our adrenal glands.

Exercise regularly

10

Exercise boosts the production of endorphins, so make sure that you exercise regularly for at least an hour, especially when you’re feeling stressed out. But, avoid pushing your body too far as that can weaken your adrenal glands even further.

Get organised

Make sure that you prioritise and organise your schedule. Don’t leave things for the last minute. Avoid taking on more work than you can handle because that will just stress you out more.

Avoid hormonal supplements

8

Moringa/ drumstick seeds You can use Moringa/ drumstick seeds to make turbid water clear. Grind a few seeds, mix them well in the turbid water and let it stand for about two hours. However, remember that this won’t disinfect the water.

Several people resort to hormonal supplements to keep their adrenal glands in check. It’s best to avoid them completely or ask to get medical advice as they have the ability to make your adrenal glands inactive. — Inputs from Purva Indulkar

>> Getting enough sleep at night ensures that your adrenal glands get the rest they need

6) Along with the inexplicable tiredness, you have been disinterested in sex and your libido is practically non-existent. a) True. b) False. 7) Your tolerance levels have been at an all-time low lately and you often feel shaky, irritable and anxious. Even the slightest thing irritates you to no end. a) True. b) False. 8) You’ve experienced quite a bit of weight gain, especially around the abdominal area, ever since the feelings of tiredness began. a) True. b) False.

THE WRONG

CURVE It may feel like a minor back ache caused by hunching or bad posture, but, Pooja Salvi tells you why there may be more to your spinal troubles than you think

Y

ou may think that there’s nothing wrong with your back. After all, everyone suffers from backaches that have been caused by bad posture! But, a minor spinal problem can lead to bigger issues if it’s not treated in its infancy. Here’s what you need to know about the common spinal deformity called scoliosis.

what is scoliosis? Scoliosis is a lateral curvature in the usually straight, vertical line of your spine. In an Xray, a spine that has been affected by scoliosis resembles an ‘S’ or a question mark, instead of a straight line. The disorder leads to an abnormal curve of the spine, or backbone. Scoliosis is typically classified in three categories: n congenital This is caused by vertebral anomalies that are present at birth. n idiopathic The cause of this is unknown. However, it is sub-classified on the basis of when it affects an individual, such as during infancy, childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. n Secondary scoliosis This is usually caused due to a neuromuscular condition such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida or physical trauma.

what causes scoliosis? Scoliosis mainly affects young children who are more susceptible to deformity, because the bones in their spine are not as stable and have not matured yet. Dr. Anjana Laungani, consultant

n Try to bend as low as possible without

causing back pain or discomfort.

n Perform two to three sets of five to ten reps.

Split Stance with arm reach

n Step forward, with one leg placed in front of

the other.

n Keep your torso as upright as possible. n Shift the weight of your knee back and

forth, allowing it to bend as you feel the weight shift to it.

n As you shift your weight forward, raise your

opposite arm as high as possible.

n While that arm is stretched upwards,

stretch your other arm, with your palm facing up, stretching it as much as possible. This helps your torso and spine turn toward the side of your front leg.

n Perform this exercise only on one side. n Perform two to three sets of five to ten reps.

Symptoms of scoliosis Scoliosis is usually easily recognisable. A curved spine can be a cause as well as a symptom, as your body can tilt to the left or the right. Several children who are affected by scoliosis generally have one shoulder blade higher than the other, or have an uneven waist, causing them to lean to one side. Dr. Anjana tells us, “These problems may be apparent in everyday activities such as trying on new clothes. If one leg of your trousers is shorter than the other, there is a possibility that you may have the condition. However, remember that it’s simply a possibility, nothing more. It may just be that one leg is slightly shorter than the other.”

why should you take symptoms seriously? Dr. Nikhil Arbatti, spine surgeon at both Saifee and Nanavati Hospital, tells us, “Scoliosis often goes unnoticed and untreated. Where it is reported, patients don’t notice it in the early stage. This is because of the ignorance surrounding the disease. It is unfortunate that despite having advanced treatment modalities, including surgical options that are effective enough to properly treat it, people hardly recognise scoliosis as a treatable disorder. Most of the time, it is seen as part of physiology or is linked with postural issues. This not only worsens the issue, it also contributes to deteriorating health among affected individuals.”

treatment for scoliosis

physiotherapist and rehab specialist from Physio Rehab, explains, “In certain cases, there is no identifiable cause of scoliosis, and it is termed idiopathic. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of this condition and is said to have a genetic link, because it tends to run in families. Girls are more at risk of being affected by the condition. Most often, when children undergo a rapid growth spurt, they become victims of scoliosis.”

n Hold this for two seconds, then lower your

hips towards the floor.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 7, 2015

>> Scoliosis mainly affects young children who have rapid growth spurts

“While treatment options for mild scoliosis mostly include back braces for large curvature, spine surgery is the best solution. Spinal fusion is one of the best surgical options, and is recommended for severe curves that are greater than 45° and for curves that have not responded to non-surgical intervention such as braces,”says Dr. Nikhil. He also tells us that the surgery usually takes several hours. “However, with recent advances in technology, patients are sometimes discharged from the hospital within a week of the surgery and do not require post-operative bracing. Many patients are able to return to school or work as soon as 2-4 weeks after the surgery. Many are able to resume all preoperative activities within 4-6 months,” he says.

Pros and Cons There are several pros and cons to using hand sanitizers. So, keep these in mind. Pros n n n n n

They’re readily available. They’re extremely affordable. They kill germs instantly and dry faster. They’re safe for children to use. They’re available in a variety of formulas — gel and liquid.

Cons

n They cannot cut through dirt, grime and faeces. n The alcohol content present in sanitizers can dry your skin

and lead to cracking. If you already have cracked skin, wait for it to heal before using a sanitizer, since it can cause skin infections. n Avoid using alcohol-based sanitizers on children as their skin is more sensitive as compared to adults. n Since these products are flammable, they should be kept at a safe distance from lighters. Also, make sure that your skin is dry before lighting a cigarette.

sanitize this! Delicious scents and pretty bottles — sanitizers of all shapes, sizes and flavours are flying off the shelves! They seem like the perfect fix when you don’t have either soap or water, but want to keep your hands clean. Pooja Salvi & Yamini Walia find out how reliable they are

W

ashing your hands properly with a good soap, removes almost every trace of germs and bacteria. But, what do you do when there’s no water or soap available? Instead of spreading unwanted bacteria to other parts of your body or letting it fester on your skin, you reach for a hand sanitizer! However, is your handy sanitizer safe to use regularly?

ingredients To understand how sanitizers get rid of bacteria and germs, you need to know what they contain.

alcohol The primary ingredient in a hand sanitizer is alcohol as it kills bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centres for Disease Control recommend using ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or a combination of both in concentrations ranging from 60% to 95%.

Humectants Are you wondering what these are? They are chemicals that are added to your hand sanitizers to ensure that they don’t dry your skin out. Glycerin and propylene glycol are the most commonly used humectants.

emulsifiers These keep the other ingredients in your hand sanitizers from reacting with one another. They thicken the hand sanitizer till it turns into a gel-like substance. Carbomer and aminomethyl propanol are commonly used as binding agents.

Make your own sanitizer If you don’t trust store-bought sanitizers and want to use something more natural, you can make a hand sanitizer at home. Take a spray bottle, aloe vera and essential oils such as lavender, clove, lemon, rosemary and orange. Fill a 4-ounce spray bottle half-way with water or witch hazel; add in 4 tbsp aloe vera pulp and 15-20 drops of antibacterial essential oils that you pick. Shake well before using it. >> Since hand sanitizers are reliable, they are mandatory in hospitals and clinics

emollients To keep your skin smooth, emollients such as isopropyl myristate are added to hand sanitizers. They’re made from substances that are found naturally in nutmeg, coconut oil and some animal fats.

Miscellaneous To distinguish one hand sanitizer from the other, manufacturers also use other ingredients such as fragrance and FDA-approved colourants.

HealtH faCtor Since sanitizers kill bacteria, it’s only right to assume that they are good for you. Dr. Behram Pardiwala, internal medicines at Wockhardt Hospital, tells us, “Sanitizers are the best option when you’re in a rush. This is because they do help to kill germs and don’t contain any harmful or fatal chemicals. In fact, sanitizers are usually mandatory in hospitals.” However, you should be careful about the amount you use. Dr. Behram explains, “It is important to use an adequate amount of sanitizer; enough that it dries as soon as you use it.” When asked if paper towels or handkerchiefs are a possible alternative, Dr. Behram tells us that they aren’t. He says, “They aren’t entirely reliable, so try to avoid using them as your only option.” However, you should also know that hand sanitizers are not a replacement for soap and water. Even if a particular one contains a high amount of alcohol, it cannot cut through grime, soil, dust, blood and faeces as well as soap can. So, these dirt particles should be washed with soap and water first. If water and soap aren’t available to you, alcohol-based sanitizers are a decent alternative. For instance, if you sneeze in the car, stop to put on your contact lenses, or even use a public bathroom, you can use your hand sanitizer. Studies have shown that micro-organisms are much more prevalent on phone receivers, computer keyboards and desktops, so using a hand sanitizer in this case will be a good idea as well.

Dear Barbara, I recently recovered from a cold and a friend of mine told me that the first thing I should do is throw away the lipstick that I was using when I was suffering from it. She explained that it is not hygienic to use the same lipstick, because germs accumulate and grow on the tube. Is this true? Should I really get rid of all the lipstick I’ve been using recently? — michelle D’Costa, parel Dear michelle, Don’t worry, you don’t have to throw out your lipstick if you used it when you had a cold. Once you’re infected, your body makes antibodies to fight that particular strain of the virus. So, you won’t get infected by using the same makeup that you did when you were sick. In addition, the cold virus doesn’t survive for too long outside the body. So, don’t unnecessarily ditch your makeup! >> There’s no need to get rid of your lipstick after you recover from a cold!

People are suddenly turning to smile makeovers — procedures that are a big trend in the world of cosmetic enhancements. Anindra Siqueira tells you what you need to know about them

T Dear Barbara, I have recently begun to notice a slight redness around my nose when I wake up every morning. Sometimes, my lips are cracked as well. What should I do? — Darshana Gadge, Dadar Dear Darshana, You should exfoliate regularly! This will help to get rid of the dead skin cells, so that the build-up around your nose is reduced. You will also need to apply a moisturiser near the sides of your nose and a lip balm near the corners of your lips and wherever the cracks appear in order to ease any pain you are experiencing and to allow the area to heal. If you want to hide the cracks, use a concealer.

hey say the sky is the limit, and with cosmetic surgery in particular, it’s plausible to think that we haven’t reached this limit yet! There are several new procedures cropping up, which target areas of your body that you would never dream could be enhanced with surgery — the mons pubis surgery is a good example of this trend! People want to be thinner, prettier and now want to sport better smiles too! This is has increased the popularity of smile makeovers. Dr. Rajesh Shetty, dental cosmetologist at Dazzle Dental Makeovers, tells us that a smile makeover doesn’t just give your smile an enhanced aesthetic appeal, but also has an age-reversing effect, since it also reduces the appearance of certain skin folds or wrinkles. Dr. Mohan Thomas, senior cosmetic surgeon at the Cosmetic Surgery Institute, has a more philosophical take on it. He says, “Your eyes may be the windows to your soul, but beautiful lips are definitely the gateway to sensuality. Our lips are the most attractive part of our face and they should not be overlooked. They are one of the most important components of your smile.”

What the makeover involves Dr. Rajesh tells us that at Dazzle Dental Makeovers, they begin with a consultation to understand the needs and desires of the person who wants to undergo this procedure. But, just as your smile isn’t only about your lips or teeth, a smile makeover takes four major aspects into consideration. n Facial aesthetics Facial musculature varies from person to person.

n Gingival aesthetics If you have exposed

teeth or gums or uneven contours, your smile will not be as you’d like it to be. n Tooth aesthetics Another important aspect of your smile is your teeth. A smile makeover, Dr. Rajesh tells us, involves the use of dental veneers and teeth whitening, scaling and polishing. n Lip aesthetics “To create a harmonious smile, we need to maintain or create the normal curvature of the lips, proper exposure of the red zone of the lips, an undistorted philtrum (the vertical indent between the base of your nose and border of your upper lip), and undisturbed nasolabial grooves (smile lines),” Dr. Mohan explains.

Not just teeth and lips Dr. Rajesh adds that at the clinic, people can pick dermatological procedures to reduce skin folds, if they need to. “The age reversal effect achieved through dentistry is merely

an add-on to the dramatic effect achieved on the smile,” he says. Dr. Mohan explains, “A smile makeover is not just about your lips, teeth and gums. Hollow, sagging cheeks, uneven lips and other signs of age can also be corrected during the process, using fillers, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery and other techniques, making your face appear more youthful and symmetrical.” Dr. Rajesh tells us that a smile makeover can be tailored to suit a person’s requirements (and budget), but the procedure generally starts from `15,000. Luckily, there are no contraindications to this type of procedure. That means that practically nothing can rule them out. However, the doctor must consider a person’s dental history, in terms of infections, especially if the person smokes. Additionally, while you may be able to change your smile, your mannerisms and facial movements will be the same!

Risks Dr. Rajesh says, “Smile makeovers are primarily non surgical and so, are low-risk procedures. At Dazzle Dental Makeovers, an inhouse team of experienced dentists and dental auxiliaries, and meticulous pre-operative planning, coupled with state-of-the-art equipment and material, ensure that the entire procedure is quick, painless and extremely predictable.” Dr. Mohan tells us that the risks of a smile makeover are related primarily to permanent changes in your teeth and gums. He says, “These are associated with bite deformities that cause a discomfort and an inability to bite and chew.” However, treatments on the lips (usually fillers) are temporary and so, these can be reversed.

Chandrashekhar Vaze mesmersises music buffs at Karnataka Sangha S

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

unday morning at Karnataka Sangha has become a habit with scores of music buffs. The tradition has been going on for well over 23 years and an entire generation of music lovers has been nourished on this steady and healthy diet of classical music. This Sunday, there was a vocal recital by Chandrashekhar Vaze. He is a multi-faceted musician. Vaze used to provide tabla accompaniment to many vocalists like Perveen Sultana and Phiroze Dastur. He also played the tabla for sitar superstar like Ustad Halim Jaffer Khan. Over the years he has emerged as a leading singer of the Kirana gharana and his music has a marked

resemblance to that of the maestro Bhimsen Joshi. He has learned vocal music from the Kirana gharana guru Phiroze Dastur and vocalist Ajay Pohankar.

In this programme, Vaze sang the raga 'Bhatiyar' to begin with. It is a difficult raga to master as well as present and therefore it is rarely heard too. Vaze could traverse the territory with effortless ease and his tanns had a lot of punch. His raga 'Megh' depicted the serious yet sombre mood of the raga. He also sang 'Piya Milan Ki Aas',the famous thumri in 'Jogia' immortalized by the late Ustad Abdul Karim Khan. He was supported on the tabla by Abhay Datar and on the harmonium by Shrinivas Acharya. Vaze’s recital was preceded by a sitar recital by the Calcuttabased Saptarshi Hazra,' who played alaps in the raga 'Miyan Ki Malhar' and a composition in another raga. He was in his

elements. The Gurubhakti festival featured performances by the students of tabla maestro Vibhav Nageshkar, harmonist Seema Shirodkar and singer Ram Deshpande. The three gurus were felicitated and their students like Tablists Arvind Sukhtankar, Girish Sabnis and Dhanashree Vagh (Nageshkar's)students. Sudhanshu Gharpure, Omkar Datar and Abhishek Kathe (aspiring harmonists under the tutelage of Seema Shirodkar) and Gandhar Deshpande, Aniruddha Srinivasan and Swapnil Chaphekar (all disciples of the leading singer Ram Deshpande) performed under the auspices of Sharada Sangeet Vidyalaya.

Omkar Goverdhan is one fresh talent who has great prospects and essayed the role of the protagonist Vishwas Inamdar with great verve and polish. Vidyadhar Joshi as detective Sane is the life and soul of the play mesmerizing the audiences with his superb portrayal. Ketaki Saraf as Vishwas’s devoted and secretly in love secretary is impressive. Writer , director Girish Joshi has done a wonderful job and has used the lighting to heighten the suspense and drama very effectively. TOP VIEW

Much to the participants’ surprise, equity benchmarks, after a weak start, gradually recovered from the day’s low and ended in green amid global uncertainty. Like other global markets, the initial reaction to Greece voting, where they rejected conditions of a rescue package from creditors on Sunday, was negative on domestic front. Depreciation in Indian rupee against dollar was also dampening the markets sentiments. But, noticeable buying interest across the board not only helped index to pare losses but end the day in green as well. We have been reiterating our view that participants are giving more weight age to the domestic cues these days and hence kept upholding our positive bias despite the odds. After days of struggle, the Nifty has finally managed to end above the crucial hurdle of 8500 and likely to inch higher towards 87508800 in the coming sessions. Considering the prevailing scenario, traders should focus on quality names from the private banking, auto, capital goods, FMCG and IT space for fresh buying.

Banks May Find It A Little Easy On Profitability, Says Fitch Pressure on profitability of public sector banks is likely to come off this year due to improved asset quality even as the last fiscal was challenging enough. "Pressure may begin to ease, aided by bond treasury gains and peaking of asset-quality pressures while a meaningful recovery in earnings is unlikely in the short term," said Fitch in a report titled 'Indian Banks Report Card: FY15'. "The performance of India's state bank sector remained challenged in FY15 (to March-end 2015), with continued pressure on asset quality and weak capital." A difficult year for Indian banks in 2014-15 was characterised by weak credit demand despite a gradually improving macro picture, it said.

Industrial Expansion Benefiting Rural Economy, Monsoons Not A Big Worry NEWS FLASH

Agriculture and rural India are no longer synonymous as more than two-thirds of rural income now originates from nonagricultural activities. A reduction in rural spending nevertheless due to a bad monsoon will be more a psychological outcome and less due to a sudden fall in affordability, says India Ratings By A Business Reporter

E

ven if the “monsoon turns out to be deficient this year, its impact on rural spending will be less severe than what it used to be a decade ago or earlier because the rural landscape of the country has changed a lot”, says India Ratings

and Research (Ind-Ra) in a special repor4t on the ‘Monsoon and Agriculture’..It bases its assessment on the fact that “More than two-thirds of rural income now originates from non-agricultural activities. Higher growth of the industrial and services sector in rural areas over the years has increased the share of non-agriculture in rural income. Due to space constraints, new industrial establishments are increasingly coming up in rural areas leading to net value-added per factory in rural areas being consistently higher than in urban areas since the beginning of the new millennium. This trend has accentuated since FY05. As a result, rural economy is now benefiting more from industrial expansion than urban economy. All this implies that rural income now is far less vulnerable to monsoon than it was few decades ago”. According to Ind-Ra “While rural monthly per capita expenditure is still lower than urban monthly per

capita expenditure, the composition of goods and services consumed by rural India is increasingly urbanising and rural spending on discretionary goods and services is growing rapidly. Ind-Ra expects this trend to only accelerate over the coming years with the physical and digital connectivity of rural area improving with each passing year. The agency also believes that “rural consumption will witness a much faster urbanisation than that witnessed in the past if the Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar and Mobile numbers becomes a reality and seamlessly allows the government to offer subsidies as monthly transfers.” “A reduction in rural spending nevertheless due to a bad monsoon will be more a psychological outcome and less due to a sudden fall in affordability. Companies having rural exposure could overcome this by innovating and shifting their goods/services to lower price points to offset the psychological barrier of perceived lower affordability” it says.

ndian companies have raised a staggering Rs 77,023 crore by selling shares through OFS mechanism in a little over three years, with PSUs contributing 82% of the total fund mop-up. The offer for sale (OFS) mechanism has significantly helped the government's disinvestment drive. Between February 2012 and March 2015, 129 companies opted for OFS route to mobilise Rs 77,023 crore, while PSUs alone raked in Rs 63,576 crore, as per the latest data. Companies garnered Rs 28,486 crore last fiscal; Rs 6,993 crore in 2013-14; Rs 28,025 crore in 2012-13 and 13,518 crore in 2011-12 (last two month February-March). might be only an urban phenomenon at the moment, according to the study. The e-marketplaces are seeing a significant growth with the increase in Internet penetration and smartphone usage. Internet-enabled handsets are making shopping a unique experience for buyers, it said. The non-inventory-led B2C model also allows the e-commerce players to provide attractive discounts and offers that are difficult for inventory-led brick-and-mortar shops as well as pure e-tailers, the study pointed out. On mode of payment, cash on delivery is the most preferred option in India, with 45% of shoppers using it, while 21% opt for debit cards and another 16% credit cards, the analysis found.

Cos Garners Rs 77000 Cr Via OFS In 3-Years; PSUs Mop-Up Rs 63000-Cr February 2012, to enable divestment by promoters to achieve minimum public shareholding in listed companies. The OFS framework was subsequently modified based on suggestions received from the market participants to enable disinvestment by government in PSUs. The mechanism has greatly facilitated the speedy disinvestment of government shareholding in PSUs with full transparency and market wide participation. Recently, Sebi issued a new set of guidelines for bidding in the OFS segment that requires companies to disclose their OFS plans two banking days

in advance. The new norms could lead to most OFS taking place on Mondays. It would also help in the government's disinvestment drive. Currently, the companies are required to give an advance notice of two trading days before the OFS, which the government has been saying gives scope for the speculators to beat down the share price of the disinvestment-bound PSUs. The new norms will help reduce the gap between the disclosure of the OFS and the actual share sale in cases where the intermediate days include trading holidays when banks are open, such as Saturdays.

New Home Purchase Sentiment Strongest In Four Years By A Business Reporter

D

eclining borrowing costs, improving employment outlook and availability of affordable housing projects are encouraging prospective home buyers to purchase a new home in 2015. Regulatory changes like recent Cabinet approval to the Real Estate Bill (Regulation and Development) are expected to boost home buyers’ sentiment further. According to the polled respondents, who represent the Indian mid-income urban consumers, buying a home is gradually becoming more conducive compared to a year back. A large section of the consumers polled felt they expect borrowing costs to decline further making it easier to avail home loans. The recent rise in sentiment has been captured by ZyFin Research’s New Home Purchase Sentiment Index, which is at its highest level since inception in October 2011. The Index stands at 43.9 in June 2015, a significant recovery from 30.7 in June 2014. The ZyFin Research’s New Home Purchase Index is a monthly barometer of Indian consumers’ willingness to purchase a home within a year. It

is based on a monthly poll of 3,000 consumers in 11 cities of different sizes across India. Commenting on the Index for June, Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief Economist, ZyFin Research, said, “Boosting aggregate demand remains the key to help an economy out of a slowdown. The recent steps taken by lending agencies to curtail lending rates taking a cue from RBI’s interest rate outlook would go a long way in convincing consumers to start opening their purse strings and help generate demand for new homes. Protection of consumer interests, promotion of fair play in real estate transactions and ensuring timely execution of projects have been some of the long pending demands of Indian home buyers.” Incidentally, Southern India Leads over the Western region with ‘Hyderabadis’ most optimist and ‘Ahmadavadis’ the least. In June 2015, among the regions, South India had the highest Index level of 48.9 while West India had the lowest level of 40.5. Real Estate developers can expect a rise in home demand in southern cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mangalore, especially if they are successful in wooing consumers with affordable housing schemes. However, western cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad would take some time to reflect any significant rise in demand unlike their Southern counterparts.

Disclosures to enjoy immunity under FEMA: Black Money FAQs N

EW DELHI: The government will give immunity from prosecution under FEMA, Prevention of Money Laundering Act and four other laws to persons declaring undisclosed foreign assets under the compliance window of the new Black Money Act. The one-time 90-day compliance window being provided to foreign asset holders to come clean will, however, not guarantee immunity for wealth generated from corruption, according to FAQs on Black Money issued by the Finance Ministry on Monday. On the provision of the compliance rules that bars persons against whom the government has prior information for making disclosures, the Finance Ministry said declarations by such persons will be dealt under the Income Tax Act and not under the stringent Black Money law. This concession will be available only to persons who had not received any intimation from the tax department having prior information about their foreign assets. On whether government has any prior information, persons making

declarations will be intimated by October 31, a month after the closure of 90-day compliance window on September 30. In case they do not receive any such information, they will have to pay 30 per cent tax and an equivalent amount of penalty by Dec 31. Disclosures made, the FAQs said, will enjoy "immunity from prosecution under the five Acts viz. The Income-tax Act, Wealth Tax Act, FEMA, Companies Act and Customs Act." It, however, does not provide immunity from prosecution under 'any other Act'. Giving example, the FAQ said, if the undisclosed asset has been acquired out of the proceeds of sale of protected animals the person will not be eligible for immunity under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The offence of willful attempt to evade tax will also not be an offence under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The Ministry clarified that persons can take advantage of the compliance window to declare those foreign assets for which no notices have been served by the tax authorities till June 30, 2015.

Govt calls meet with 7 states on Rohingya Muslims on July 20 N

EW DELHI: Concerned over more than one lakh Rohingya Muslims settling in India, the Centre has convened a meeting of top officials of seven states, including UP and Jammu and Kashmir, on July 20 to discuss monitoring their activities given their vulnerablility to radicalisation. The meeting, to be attended by Principal Secretaries (Home) of the states, will also take note of "alarming" development of Rohingya Muslims marrying Indian girls, especially in Jammu and Kashmir, a government official told PTI. According to an initial estimate, there are around 1.3 lakh Rohingyas, mostly settled in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh (mainly Hyderabad), Kerala, Assam, J&K and Delhi. "Rohingya Muslims are 'persecuted' in their homeland in Myanmar. Hence, there is a fear that the members of the community could be vulnerable to radicalisation. We have to be cautious before things go out of hand," the official said on Monday.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 7, 2015 Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ sub-inspector recruited by the state board was found dead in a lake on Monday. Congress demanded the sacking of Chouhan following the spate of mysterious deaths connected to the admission and recruitment scam in the last two years that has rocked the BJP -ruled state even as the Chief Minister said it is "not fair" to link all such "unfortunate incidents" with the scandal. The BJP rallied behind Chouhan in the face of strident demands by the Congress for a CBI probe, saying the state government need not order it after the apex court rejected the plea of Congress leader Digvijay Singh in this regard. In a related development, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a petition seeking removal of MP Governor Ram Naresh Yadav over his alleged involvement in the scandal. "SIT probe into the scam is on, and the government cannot direct the High Court or the Supreme Court on the issue," Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh told PTI in Jhabua in MP. Asked why the state government was avoiding a CBI probe, Singh said the High Court and the apex court had already rejected a PIL in this regard. "There is no point in handing over the ongoing probe to CBI at this juncture," he said. "If the Supreme Court or the High Court feels that the probe is not perfect to the extent it should be, then it will give directions and the government will immediately accept it and hand over the matter to the CBI," he added. Whistleblower Ashish Chaturvedi, 26, claimed that there was a grave threat to his life and accused Chouhan of being "directly involved" in the scam, a charge rubbished by the CM. Adding to the string of deaths since the past two days, the body of trainee sub-inspector Anamika Sikarwar (25) was found in a lake

Members of Youth Congress protest against Central and Madhya Pradesh government over Vyapam scam in Bengaluru on Monday. adjacent to the Police Training Academy at Sagar district headquarters in the state. It came after the unexplained death of journalist Akshay Singh who was covering Vyapam scam in Jhabua while Jabalpur Medical College Dean Arun Sharma, probing fake examinees, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel at Dwarka in south-west Delhi yesterday. Sagar City Superintendent of Police Gautam Solanki said they suspect Anamika's death to be a case of suicide, a claim promptly dismissed

by the Congress. She was selected as a sub-inspector in an exam conducted by Vyapam but police said that her selection has nothing to do with Vyapam scam and she was not a suspected beneficiary. The Chief Minister quickly denied that the incident was linked to the Vyapam probe. "It is sad and unfortunate incident. But with all responsibility I say that there is no connection of that unfortunate incident with Vyapam or its probe. And it is not fair to link all such unfortunate incidents with

Vyapam." Congress, which has sought a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe, stepped up its attack on Chouhan, demanding that he be sacked to allow an impartial investigation and said that he cannot escape responsibility for "45 deaths" of people having some connection with the issue. "Shivraj Singh Chouhan should be sacked and an impartial probe should be done in the Vyapam scam," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in New Delhi.

nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday said the SIT probe into Vyapam scam was being monitored by the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the government cannot direct the court to hand it over to CBI. "SIT probe into the scam is on, and the government cannot direct the High Court or the Supreme Court on the issue," Singh told PTI. Asked why the state government was avoiding a CBI probe into the massive recruitment/admission scam, Singh said the High Court and the apex court had already rejected a PIL in this regard. "There is no point in handing over the ongoing probe to CBI at this juncture," he said "In case someone tries to influence the probe, or if any incident takes place that affects the investigation, then I am sure that the court will take cognisance. "If the Supreme Court or the High Court feels that the probe is not perfect to the extent it should be, then it will give directions and the government will immediately accept it and hand over the matter to the CBI," Singh said.

Jayalalithaa case: AAP govt wants referendum on Delhi’s statehood demand DMK files appeal N against acquittal in Supreme Court B

ENGALURU: The DMK has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the acquittal of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case. The DMK has challenged the order of acquittal passed by the Karnataka High Court. The petition filed by the DMK will be heard along with the appeal that was filed a week back by the Karnataka government. The DMK in its appeal has sought the reversal of the High Court order in which Jayalalithaa and her aides were held not guilty. The appeal by the DMK also seeks to restore the order of the trial court which had sentenced Jayalalithaa, Ilavarasi, Sasikala Natrajan and Sudhakaran to four years imprisonment. The DMK's appeal seeks to restore the order of the trial court which had found Jayalalithaa and others guilty. The trial court had sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years imprisonment and also slapped a Rs 100 crore fine on her.

EW DELHI: The AAP government wants a referendum on the issue of statehood for Delhi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sent a note to various departments asking them to "draft a law and create machinery for" such a practice. According to a senior officer, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently discussed the referendum plan with his cabinet colleagues. The note from the Chief Minister said "Do a referendum in Delhi. Draft a law and create machinery for referendum." Kejriwal has asked the Urban Development Department to come up with a feasibility report specifying a timeline. The department was asked to give various options available to the government for conducting such a referendum. The Law Department has also been asked to discuss the legal issues regarding the matter. Demanding statehood for Delhi, Law Minister Kapil Mishra on Monday said, "Legal complication will not come. Only BJP and Congress will back-track from their promise which they made. It is a political issue." "People in others states have rights on their land and police and the citizen of Delhi should also have these rights. We should get

what others are getting, why Delhi should suffer?" he asked. Mishra hinted that AAP may launch an agitation programme on the issue.

"BJP and Congress had promised the status of full statehood to Delhi. They forgot their promise, but AAP did not. The AAP government will not sit quietly and no one can stop Delhi from getting statehood," he said, adding what is the harm in taking opinion from public. The AAP government claimed

that proposal for statehood has been delayed due to lack of political will. AAP leader Ashish Khetan said, "The full statehood for Delhi is in people's favour and let them decide about it. (Let) People decide, then other parties, the Centre should do as people want." Excited to get a complete seriesRobin Uthappa M

UMBAI: Robin Uthappa is excited that he will at last get a full series of ODIs and T20s to show his wares as a top order batsman who can also keep wickets during the upcoming short trip to Zimbabwe. “I am pretty excited. The last few years I have been getting just one-off games at the end of the series. So I am pretty excited to get a complete series and, you know, a complete series with me keeping wickets. I believe and assume I will be keeping wickets. I am the only one (in the squad) who keeps (wickets) in domestic cricket,” said the hard-hitting Karnataka opener during the open media session ahead of the squad’s departure tomorrow morning. “As a wicket keeper you get a close view of the wicket. There’s a lot of information you get as a wicket keeper on how the pitches play and what kinds of angles are available for batsmen,” said the Bengaluru player who will be one of the key members of the secondstring India squad led by Ajinkya Rahane. The tour commences on July 10 with the first of three ODIs and ends with the second and last T20I and all matches are to be played at one venue, Harare. Uthappa said he has prepared well for the tour.“The preparations have been good. I have stuck to the same preparations and practice mode. I am paying same amount of time on keeping and batting. I want to do that job well for the country.” Though considered as a limited overs specialist at the international level, Uthappa said his dream was to represent the country in Test cricket. “The goal is to play for India at the Test level. I will represent India in Tests, that’s the dream I have.” Another batsman who has been in and out of ODIs but was part of the World Cup squad, Ambati Rayudu, is also glad to get the opportunity to play for the country at a place where he has played before.

IMBLEDON, ENGLAND: Serena Williams again got the better of her big sister Venus on Monday at Wimbledon, where Maria Sharapova joined Serena in the quarterfinals. Serena continued her push for a fourth straight Grand Slam title with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the fourth round, beating her sister for the 15th time in 26 all- time meetings. The top-seeded Serena was dominant in all factors on Monday. She ripped 10 aces among her 36 winners and broke serve four times while Venus managed just one break of serve in the 67minute match. Meanwhile, the fourthseeded former world No. 1 Sharapova handled Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas 6-4, 64 on Day 7 of the fortnight. The five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova stunned Serena in the 2004

Wimbledon final and lost to Petra Kvitova in the 2011 title tilt. Sharapova was January's Aussie runner-up to Serena. Two other Americans were fourth-round winners Monday, as Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe also ad-

vanced. Keys rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Olga Govortsova of Belarus, while Vandeweghe surprised sixth-seeded Lucie Safarova, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4). Nick Kyrgios made a typi-

cally volatile exit, the tennis enigma accused of tanking during a rollercoaster fourset fourth-round loss to classy Frenchman Richard Gasquet. In a bizarre and at times listless performance, Kyrgios crashed to a 7-5 6-1 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (8-6) defeat, ending Australia's participation in the singles for another year. Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky reached her first quarter-final with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Romania's Monica Niculescu. The 15th seed, who made the French Open semifinals last month, takes on either Caroline Wozniacki or Garbine Muguruza for a place in the semi-finals. Maria Sharapova will face unheralded American CoCo Vandeweghe on Tuesday as she continues her bid for a second Wimbledon title.

Plenty at stake for Ashes captains L ondon :Rival skippers Alastair Cook and Michael Clarke both have particular reasons for wanting to win the upcoming Ashes series that begins with the first cricket Test in Cardiff starting on Wednesday. For England skipper Cook, an Ashes series win would be the ideal reward for several difficult years which included a 5-0 whitewash reversal ‘Down Under’ in 2013/14, the fall-out from the international exile of Kevin Pietersen and a personal loss of form. Meanwhile an Ashes series win in England is one of the few outstanding achievements left for Clarke to fulfil in the course of a brilliant career, with the star batsman’s three previous Test series in Britain ending in defeat. Clarke has a reputation for being a bolder and more aggressive leader in the field than Cook and Australia great Shane Warne, himself a renowned cricket tactician, said he always detected the makings of a future skipper in his compatriot when they played together at English county side Hampshire in 2004. “We stood alongside each other in the slips and chatted all day about captaincy,” Warne told the Sunday Times.

Michael Clarke and Alastair Cook will earn their 100th Test caps in the third match of the Ashes series. “He showed a great cricket brain for one with so little big-match experience under his belt.” Clarke, however, has not always had the support of his players as was shown by the fall-out from the ‘homeworkgate’ affair in India, although there appears to be far greater harmony within the Australia camp since Darren

Lehmann replaced Mickey Arthur as coach on the eve of the 2013 Ashes in England. Cook, by contrast, has been a less divisive figure within his own side and even the exiled Pietersen, in the midst of his controversial autobiography, said his criticisms of Cook were not personal. This Ashes campaign will

be Cook’s first as Test skipper since the appointment of Australian Trevor Bayliss as England coach. Bayliss has said England must “fight fire with fire” if they are to regain the Ashes from Australia. This has led to speculation that Cook may find it difficult to work on a tactical level with Bayliss.

ONDON: Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna scored contrasting victories to make it to the quarterfinals of the the Wimbledon Championships with their respective partners but Leander Paes’ campaign ended following defeat in a thrilling five-setter, here today. ENGALURU: A captain's knock by Mithali Raj enabled the Indian women's cricket team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in the fourth ODI, thereby levelling the five-match series at 2-2. Skipper Mithali's stylish unbeaten knock of 81 was the cornerstone of India successful chase of 221 in only 44.2 overs. Brief Scores: New Zealand 220 in 49.5 overs (Sophie Devine 89, Rajeshwari Gayekwad 3/25, Niranjana Nagarajan 3/35) lost to India 221/2 in 44.2 overs (Mithali Raj 81 no, Smriti Mandhana 66, Harmanpreet Kaur 32 no) by 8 wkts.

There were two significant milestones also reached during the match. Mithali became the first Indian and second in women's ODI history to complete 5000 runs after England's Charlotte Edwards. The chase of 221 was also the highest by the eves on Indian soil and second highest overall. Mithali got able support from young left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana (66, 99 balls) as they added 124 runs for the second wicket.

Shan Masood is congratulated by Younis Khan after he reached his fifty. Both the players were involved in an unbeaten partnership of 217. Pakistan needs 147 runs to win the match.

New Zealand's Sophie Devine plays a shot during 4th ODI match against India at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday. This was after Mandhana and Thirushkamini (31) gave a steady start with a 49-run opening stand. Mithali's 88-ball innings had 10 sweetly timed bound-

aries but the most exciting part of Indian innings was Harmanpreet Kaur's 25-ball cameo that yielded 32 runs with help of four boundaries and two huge sixes.

A straight six off spinner Leigh Kasperek ended the match. Earlier, the New Zealanders reached a decent target of 220 in 49.5 overs.

UMBAI: India’s ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s critical comments about Ajinkya Rahane’s batting in 50-over format may have raised a lot of eyebrows but the stand-in captain himself has decided to take his senior’s feedback in a “positive manner and move on”.Rahane was dropped from India’s ODI playing XI for two matches in the series in Bangladesh and Dhoni had said that the Mumbai batsman has “problems in rotating the strike in slow subcontinental conditions. But he was named captain in barely a week’s time. “Dhoni bhai gave me a feedback and I took it in a positive manner and I have moved on. Bangladesh tour is past for me. My aim is to be more consistent in ODIs as it’s all in the mind,” Rahane said at the predeparture pressconference of the Indian cricket team ahead of their short fivematch limited overs series in Zimbabwe. Rahane also said that he did not believe in classifying players into “seniors and juniors”.

ALLEKELE: Shan Masood and Younis Khan compiled unbeaten centuries to keep Pakistan in the hunt for a landmark victory in the seriesdeciding third and final Test against Sri Lanka today. Set a challenging target of 377 runs, the tourists recovered from a shaky 13-2 to move to 230 without further loss by stumps on the rain-free fourth day in Pallekele. Masood, the five-Test old lefthander, was unbeaten on 114, having reached his maiden century by lofting off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal for a six over long-on towards the end of play. Younis, who made his 100th Test appearance in the second match of the series, got to his 30th century in the day's last over. The pair have put on 217 so far for the third wicket with Younis on 101. Pakistan will enter the final day's play on Tuesday needing a further 147 runs with eight wickets in hand on a

wearing, but easy-paced pitch at the Pallekele International Stadium. If Pakistan win, it will be the first time a visiting team will have scored more than 300 runs in the fourth innings to win a Test on Sri Lankan soil. Pakistan's highest successful chase is 314 runs they made against Australia to win the Karachi Test way back in 1994. Earlier, Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews was last man out for 122 as the hosts took their overnight score of 228-5 to 313 before they were all out at the stroke of lunch. Pakistan's fast bowler Imran Khan took all the five wickets that fell in the morning session in the space of 33 balls. Mathews, who came in to bat on Sunday afternoon with his team reduced to 35-3, anchored the innings for more than six hours in which he hit 12 boundaries and a six. Imran said he was delighted at his maiden five-wicket haul.

Indian hockey eves arrive to grand welcome N

EW DELHI: Having all but booked a berth in next year's Rio Olympics, Indian women's hockey team today arrived here early morning to a grand welcome amidst beating of drums and loud cheers. A large contingent of officials and media gathering was present at the airport to receive the team, which finished fifth at the just-concluded Hockey World League Semifinals in Antwerp, Belgium. The result has enhanced Indian eves chances of qualifying for the 2016 Games. "We knew we had to be in the top five to stay in contention for the Rio Olympics. The last two games were very crucial for us and the girls The Indian women hockey team being accorded grand welcome on their arrival in New Delhi on Sunday night kept their cool despite huge after finishing 5th in the FINTRO Hockey World League in Belgium.

expectations and pressure. The young players specially played really well and I can confidently say that the future for women hockey in India is very bright," said India's coach C R Kumar. Indian eves lone Olympic appearance was at Moscow in 1980. Effectively, India's fifth spot here should secure them an Olympic Games ticket when the countdown to allocate spots takes place. Three spots each are on offer at both the World League Semifinal competitions, here at Antwerp and in the just-concluded event at Valencia. With five continental event champions being allowed another route, there are likely to be several dual qualifications.

HATTRICK OF GOALS, HATTRICK OF TITLES

Lloyd inspires USA to 5-2 Japan win over Japan, third World Cup title The United States Women's National Team celebrates with the trophy as confetti falls on them after they beat Japan 5-2 in the FIFA Women's World Cup soccer championship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Sunday.

ANCOUVER: Carli Lloyd became the first woman to score a hattrick in a World Cup final as she inspired the United States to a 5-2 demolition of defending champions Japan. The United States, winners in 1991 and 1999, became the first nation yesterday to win the crown three times and avenged their loss to Japan on penalties in the 2011 final. Lloyd, 32, scored her first goal after just three minutes on the pitch at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium with the second coming two minutes later, and her third after 16 minutes. "I was on a mission today,"

said Lloyd, whose teammates Lauren Holiday (14) and Tobin Heath (54) also found the net. Yuki Ogimi got one back on 27 minutes for the Asian champions with their second coming thanks to a 52nd-minute own-goal by US defender Julie Johnson. "It's unreal, it just hasn't sunk in yet," Lloyd said. "I'm mentally fried. "We knew that if we took it to Japan they would get nervous on the pitch." Coach Jill Ellis said her only thought after the early goalfest was: "Pinch me, wake me up!" "We'd talked about starting fast, and I just knew that the

players could deliver. "These players were born for the big moments," she added. "I envisaged us winning the trophy. I think five (goals) is a dream come true." It was the third meeting between the two teams in a major championship with the Americans winning the Olympic gold ahead of Japan in 2012, when Lloyd scored both goals in a 2-1 win. The stunned 'Nadeshiko' were in disarray just minutes into their title defence. GOLDEN BALL TO LLOYD Wearing the captain's armband Lloyd, who was one of three US players to miss a

penalty in the 2011 final, got her first two goals from set pieces as she delivered a performance that saw her presented with the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player. The player from New Jersey picked up Megan Rapinoe's low cross from the right to tap in. Two minutes later the Japanese defence was in meltdown when Lloyd again found her way through following a freekick. To euphoric chanting of 'USA, USA, USA' from the 53,341 fans in the packed stadium, Holiday got a third just before the quarter hour mark with a volley after a weak defensive header from Azusa

Iwashimizu. And just two minutes later Lloyd completed her hattrick with a stunning shot from 50 yards over the head of a stunned Ayumi Kaihori in the Japan goal. Japan coach Norio Sasaki said he had tried to warn his players of the danger posed by midfielder Lloyd, who was playing up front alongside Alex Morgan, but his shouts were drowned out by the crowd. "I tried to tell them but they couldn't hear me," he said. "Miss Lloyd, she always does this to us. In London she scored two and here she scored three. "We're really embarrassed,

31 but we really respect and admire her, she deserves the golden ball."

WAMBACH ‘A LEGEND’ Japan's players huddled together to try and regroup, as they struggled to contain the livewire midfielder, who netted six goals in the tournament, equal with Germany's Celia Sasic. But the Houston Dash midfielder raced forward again, looking surprised as she missed a chance for a fourth on 17 minutes as she fired just wide. Ogimi lifted Japanese spirits in the 27th minute as she got one past Hope Solo -whose work in the US goal earned her the Golden Glove award as top keeper of the tournament. Sasaki brought on experienced midfielder Homare Sawa, the heroine of Japan's 2011 campaign, after 33 minutes in place of tearful Iwashimizu who had to be comforted on the bench. Kozue Ando, who broke her ankle in Japan's opening game, and underwent surgery at home was back in Vancouver on the sidelines. She was given a piggy back ride onto the field by reserve goalkeeper Erina Yamane at halftime. But even her presence could not lift Japan, despite getting a goal back when Johnston inadvertently headed a cross into the back of her own net. But just two minutes later Heath got her first goal of the tournament, as she picked up a cross from Morgan Brian following a corner. US star Abby Wambach came on for the last ten minutes, with Lloyd handing her the captain's armband. "I wanted her to put the armband on because she's done so much for our team. It's her last World Cup and she's a legend," said Lloyd. Veteran Christie Rampone, 40 and the only player remaining from the 1999 squad, came on for the last five minutes of the contest.

champion Australia defeated host Belgium 1-0 to win Hockey World League Semifinals at the KHC Dragons Stadium here. The title encounter seemed headed for penalty shoot-out yesterday before Australia earned two successive penalty corners in the last 25 seconds, and Ciriello finally found the target by placing the shot wide of the Belgian goalkeeper's reach. It was a heart-breaking moment for the partisan crowd and Belgian goalkeeper Jeremy Gucassoff, who played a gallant game today to thwart repeated raids by the Australian strikers. World No 1 Australia laid siege on the Belgian citadel in

Govers inside the scoring circle. For a while in the first half, Belgium had an advantage as Australian player Tristan White was shown the yellow card and was off the turf for an extended period. It became a nine men versus 10 contest when a player of either side were suspended for two minutes owing to a midfield clash, while White was still off the field.
