F

resh trouble is brewing for suspended IPS officer Sunil Paraskar, as the Preliminary Enquiry (PE) proceedings found professional lapses on the part of the officer while he was additional commissioner. PE was conducted by joint commissioner of police (Administration) Vivek Phansalkar in connection with the allegations of rape and molestations against Paraskar. PE report has been submitted to city police chief Rakesh Maria as well as the state Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Dayal. "There were professional lapses by Paraskar while performing his duty as additional commissioner (North Region),” said Maria. “PE report is based on the recorded statements of Paraskar, the lady victim and witnesses as well as other evidences gathered by crime branch while carrying out investigation in the case,” asserted Maria. The report will be submitted to

Sunil Paraskar state Home Minister by DGP following which a departmental inquiry will be ordered against Paraskar. The latter was suspended on August 26. Earlier, city police submitted an investigation progress report of Paraskar's rape case to Dayal, who had then forwarded it to the state

government. Based on this report the state government placed Paraskar under suspension. Subsequently, PE had been ordered to find out if there were any administrative lapses by Paraskar while dealing with the victim. According to sources, Paraskar, who claimed to have "friendly relationship" with the 25-year-old victim, a model by profession, violated Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules and his behaviour amounts to belittling the image of All-India Service Officers. One of the main points in the PE report is that Paraskar had travelled with the model beyond his professional jurisdiction (Navi Mumbai). Further, the officer accepted expensive gifts from her without prior permission of his seniors. Regular Continued on pg 8 «

ity Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria has finally been shown the green signal by the state government with regard to moving the Bombay High Court to challenge an order passed by Maharashtra Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) directing a judicial inquiry against Maria in connection with the alleged discrepancies in the 26/11 call records. An affidavit in this regard would be filed soon after consulting the lawyers concerned, the top cop said. The city police had approached the State Home Department seeking permission to challenge CIC Ratnakar Gaikwad's July order in the court. The transparency watchdog

had asked the state government to institute an inquiry headed by a sitting or retired judge under the Commission of Inquiry Act to go into why "misleading" information was provided to Vinita Kamte, wife of slain IPS officer Ashok Kamte, by Maria. "Considering the information available, it looks like in this matter misleading information was provided, deliberately no information was shared or information was destroyed, delays were caused in providing information etc. The commission agrees with the doubts raised by the complainant (Vinita Kamte)," Gaikwad had said in a scathing three-page order passed on July 9. s the idea of Third Front making a mark again? This time though not before the general election. On Thursday, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh hosted leaders of some other regional parties over lunch at his residence in New Delhi where they spoke on the effort to put up a united front against the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. The meeting took just a few days ahead of the commencement of the Parliament's Winter Session. RJD leaders Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi, both former chief ministers of Bihar, were present at the meeting apart from JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav and former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, JD(S) chief and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and INLD's Dushyant Chautala. The Left was, however, conspicuous by its absence at the meeting although it had initiated the formation of the Photo shows from (LtoR): Mr. Kamal Morarka, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr. Deve Gowda, Mr. Sharad Yadav, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav and Third Front before this year's Lok Mr. Nitish Kumar during a luncheon meeting in New Delhi on Thursday.

CR GM initiates reformative action for transport agencies By Vishnudas Sheshrao

A

t least 60 transport-related mega projects are pending for years owing to the lack of coordination and communication between different central and state government transport authorities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Central Railway GM Brig S.K. Sood has now planned to call representatives of all agencies under one roof for better communication and coordination to hasten the speed of some projects and facilitate passengers.

MUMBHAI Vikas Sabnis

Who is he? Is he an AAP follower ready for Delhi poll campaign, or a member of the BJP on his way to support ‘CLEAN INDIA’ drive?

At present there are 17 different transport agencies in the MMR. Some of these are the Central Railway, Western Railway, MRVC, Mono rail, Metro, BEST, State Transport, BMC, TMC, KDMC, MMRDA, CIDCO, NMMC and taxi unions. Only on a few occasions, all authorities are called under one roof either by the Chief Minister or the Chief Secretary of the state. And in rare cases, Municipal Commissioner of the BMC calls a few authorities by the virtue of the office under the Disaster Management Act 2005. So far, only twice has this act been invoked. At other times, there is no coordination among these authorities. All they do is exchange letters. To overcome this, Brig Sood said that his office will take charge and call representatives of respective agencies under one roof. Brig Sood opined that transportrelated decisions must be discussed with other agencies before they are implemented to ensure safety of passengers. Construction of bridges, roads, conducting mega blocks for railways, prospective strikes of employees must all be shared with other agencies in advance so that they can make alternate plans to help passengers, he said. Brig Sood said, “At present there are 60 different issues related to transport which are stuck in the files on different tables. If all officials come under one roof and on one table, these files can be sorted out faster.” He added, “Our plan is to have a weekly meeting of representatives of all authorities, probably on Tuesday or any other consensual day and time. We will discuss our problems and possible solutions.”

Sabha election. Nitish Kumar said the plan is to face the BJP unitedly in parliament and accused the Narendra Modi government of not doing enough to bring back the black money stashed abroad. He also said the regional parties have decided to work together at the moment and will see whether they will merge in future. Modi's BJP, with 282 seats, has a majority in the 545-member Lok Sabha. Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party has five seats, RJD four seats while the JD(U) and JD(S) and INLD have two seats each in the Lower House of the parliament. In Bihar, arch-rivals Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar recently buried their differences to contest the bypolls together in August to stop the BJP. The grand alliance, also comprising the Congress and NCP, succeeded to check the BJP. The INLD and NCP though failed to counter the BJP in the assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, consecutively, where itfinished as the single largest party.

BMC against the thirsty Mumbaikar BMC to demolish drinking water fountain at Bombay Gymkhana because it ‘blocks the view of Azad Maidan’ By Aroosa Ahmed & Santia Dudi

T

he water fountain near the Bombay Gymkhana which has been quenching the thirst of many Mumbaikars daily is going to be demolished by the BMC. The civic body claims that the area is becoming filthy and that people are complaining about the dirt around the fountain. The water fountain was inaugurated in 2004 by Gopinath Munde who was then a Member of Parliament, and has been serving the people from the past ten years. In 2004, Puncham, a child aid organisation, approached the BMC with a plan to build water fountains in the city. The BMC agreed to the plan of building the fountains in front of the Bombay Gymkhana and several other locations in the city. “Now I have received a notice from the BMC saying that they will demolish the water fountain by November 7 because it is unhygienic. We do a check every week to see if the water available is clean and maintained properly. We have also appointed a person to clean the area around the fountain,” Rani Podar, founder and president of Punchamsaid. The BMC had earlier demolished two fountains that Puncham had built at Tata Garden and Mahalaxmi without serving a notice. Podar further elaborated, “The reason the BMC is giving does not appear logical. They state that the water fountain blocks the view of Azad Maidan. The walkers are apparently not happy because people drink water and spit around there

The water fountain at Bombay Gymkhana brings relief to hundreds of Mumbaikars as they go through their days under Mumbai's sweltering heat making the place dirty. However the BMC is not taking any action against people who are spitting but is going to demolish the water fountains. The fountains are for the people. It is meant to quench people's thirst.” Puncham has managed to get a stay on the demolition order. Advocate Abha Singh, said, “The BMC has not mentioned the prohibition under which they are planning the demolition. They cannot do it without proper permission. The ward officer is not following the guidelines. The heritage committee, as per the BMC, claims that walkers are inconvenienced because of the fountain.” Passersby share some of their observations about the fountain. Shehkar Sharma, a teacher at the J J School of Arts, said, “I pass by the

area and I have seen many people who drink water from the fountain. There is a vada pav stall and a sugarcane juice stall nearby. So I do not understand why the BMC wants to demolish something which is actually helping the people who cannot afford a Bisleri and doing nothing to the stalls present over there.” Ramiz Khan (22), owner of a stall at Fashion Sreet, said, “The stall owners generally go to the water fountain to drink water and it is very helpful as we cannot afford bottled water every day. The water in the water fountain is potable and hygienic too.” Repeated attempts by the ADC to approach the Assistant Commissioner of A Ward, Chandrakant Chore, went futile.

Social networking sites and mobile phone messengers have lately been abuzz with messages discouraging use of foreign goods and services, claiming to have come as a message from PM Narendra Modi as part of his 'Make in India' campaign, which encourages Indian businesses and is all for the appreciation of the Indian rupee. While all that sounds nice, and we even recognise the good in the PM's intentions, what we do not have an answer to is, what are we planning to do about the employment that these foreign companies generate in India? ‘I miss beer’: Ghana chief visiting Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat, which has a reputation for being a 'dry state', recently gave a hard time to the head of Akyem Abuakwa, Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, who was in Ahmedabad to undergo an eyesurgery. Panin II, devastated to know that he will be deprived of alcohol during his stay in the city, asked, "How do the state's subjects survive without booze? What's dry?" Akyem Abuakwa is a unitary traditional state in Eastern Ghana. The head of the state is known by the title 'Okyenhene'. "How odd it is! It feels a bit like role reversal...for the first time, the chief and not the subjects are being punished," Panin II said. Describing his stay in Gujarat as 'tough', thanks to deprivation of alcohol, the chief said, "I have not been able to drink. For tipplers like me, it's difficult to come to terms with this kind of situation. How do Gujaratis survive without liquor?" However, the chief said he was happy and satisfied with the state's medical facilities. "I am very impressed with Gujarat's

affordable healthcare," he said. But he added that he was missing beer. "I've never had as much mineral water in my entire life as I've done over the past two days in Gujarat," he said. He made a quick comparison of his state with Gujarat. In Akyem, he said, beer, vodka and wine is found everywhere. People go to pubs and have a colourful lifestyle. Why didn't he apply for a liquor

permit at the city airport's international terminal? "I am not supposed to stand in queues," he said. His status as the state's chief doesn't permit him to stand in queues. However when he was told that the ban of liquor in the state is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the chief was impressed. He was of the opinion that Gandhi was the greatest man the world has ever seen.

hiv Sena remains undecided as ever on the issue of joining the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis-led ministry. Yesterday once again the Sena meeting chaired by party president Uddhav Thackeray at Sena Bhavan, Dadar, remained inconclusive. Speaking to newspersons later, party spokesperson Dr Neelam Gorhe reiterated the party stand that the leader of party's legislature wing will be elected on November 9. She added that the party could announce the decision before the due date. She added that party president Uddhav Thackeray will take a decision on joining government in Maharashtra and about its presence in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). When asked about the Sena response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the leaders in New Delhi are having positive talks with the Sena leadership and hoped that all will be fine soon. Speaking to the ADC on conditions of anonymity, sources in the state leg-

Neelam Gorhe, spokesperson, Shiv Sena. islature secretariat rejected reports appearing in the press that the Sena could stand to lose its claim to the Leader of Opposition post in the Legislative Assembly if it does not elect its legislature party leader by November 8. Sources in the Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) disclosed that it all could well depend on the impending expansion of the union cabinet and legislative council elections. Even before the Sena decides on joining the BJP government or seeking more berths in the union cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already roped in former Sena MP and ex-Union Power minister

Suresh Prabhu to head the panel to revamp the power sector. Prabhu is also to head the Indian delegation at the ensuing G20 summit. Sources added that the BJP could rope in Prabhu in the union cabinet. The other Sena probables include Sena Lok Sabha MP's Rahul Shewale and Chandrakant Khaire. But more than that, for both the Sena and BJP, the impending byelections to four vacancies to the Elected by MLAs (EMLA) constituencies in the Legislative Council necessitates that the two firm up their alliance once again as early as possible. The four vacancies have been caused recently with sitting Congress and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan getting elected to the Legislative Assembly from Karad South Assembly constituency. Two BJP former MLC's – ex-Leader of Opposition Vinod Tawde and Ashish Shelar – have been elected to the lower house from Borivali and Vandre (W) Assembly constituencies. After the two allies broke their 25-year-old alliance on the eve of the legislative Assembly elections in September last, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray had chided his estranged cousin Sena president Uddhav Thackeray about why he's not walking out of the Modi cabinet. According to sources Sena MPs whose names are doing the rounds include: Rahul Shewale, Chandrakant Khaire, Suresh Prabhu and Anil Desai. Sources argue that this could be the first step towards the Sena eventually joining the BJP government in Maharashtra.

Will the ‘son’ shine? Sonia authorised to choose For a week now, Raj Thackeray's son Amit Thackeray is being seen at the party's student wing meetings

fter Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray failed to retain his party seats in the Assembly elections, his son Amit Thackeray is now conducting meetings with the party's student wing Maharastra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) vibhag pramukhs (area heads). Although Amit has not officially announced his entry into politics, his meetings and discussions with the student wing indicates a new chapter in MNS history. With Aditya Thackeray, Amit's cousin and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's son, already active in Shiv Sena's student wing 'Yuva Sena', a tug of war for the University elections seems to be in the offing. Amit studied at Balmohan school in Shivaji Park and R A Podar College in Matunga. He then joined an architecture course at LS Raheja College but later moved to Ruparel College. Since Monday, Amit Thackeray accompanied by MNVS President Aditya Shirodkar, has been conducting discussions with the vibhag pramukhs of MVS in Mumbai. In 2010, Aditya Thackeray was declared as the president of the Yuva Sena. The Yuva Sena then won the Mumbai University senate elections with eight seats whereas the MNVS was able to bag two seats. Later, the Yuva Sena won the Mumbai University Students' Council Election in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 and 2013, the MNVS ousted the Yuva Sena and took

With both the parties having a tie of two wins each, the upcoming students' council elections and the University Senate elections are crucial for both. The discussions with the MNVS area heads are held by Aditya Shridokar and I have been going along with him for these meetings.”

he much hyped meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) which started on a stormy note yesterday concluded quietly authorising party president Sonia Gandhi to nominate their leader amidst calls to give the post to a youth leader. Restraining the agitated members from reacting over the debacle, a one-line resolution, authorising Congress president to select the new CLP leader was moved by state Congress president Manikrao Thakre and unanimously adopted by 39 newly-elected legislative Assembly members (MLAs) and 22 legislative Council members (MLCs). Three MLAs were absent due to various reasons. The resolution was passed in the presence of Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, the central observer who later met the legislators individually to seek their views on the new CLP chief. During the meeting, the former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan indicated that he is not in the race for the CLP leader's post. Chavan pointed out that he has requested the party leadership not to assign any responsibility to him now. He said, “I want to meet and spend maximum time with the people of my constituency, Karad South, and work for them”. Former minister, Vijay Wadettiwar, a legislator from Chimur, in

Now, Congress president Sonia Gandhi will nominate CLP leader in Maharashtra. Chandrapur district demanded that a youthful leader from Vidarbha be considered as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also hailed from the region. Speaking to reporters after the legislature party meeting, Manikrao Thakre said, “Kharge will meet Mohan Prakash, AICCI general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra, and discuss the legislators' views before taking the final decision”. The name of the leader will be announced by Congress president

Sonia Gandhi from New Delhi very shortly. In the Lok Sabha elections held in May and recently concluded Assembly elections, the Congress received its worst drubbing for which Chavan faced the party's ire at various levels. Many were up in arms against the former CM and had decided to take him on in the meeting. However, a one line resolution was passed and the ball was tossed into the court of the Congress high command.

tion is better but she is in a depressed state. The couple got married in February this year, informed police. The accused was working with a reputed company in the city and the girl’s father is a highly placed government employee. According to the police, the

ormer constable Milind Salvi, who had been booked by the Dahisar police on May 17 for allegedly cheating a retired Food Corporation of India (FCI) employee of Rs.5 lakh, has been arrested in a separate case at Kharghar on Wednesday where he had duped a family of Rs.2.90 lakh by promising their son admission in an engineering college. He is likely to be transferred to the Dahisar cops after their Kharghar counterparts conclude their investigation. Salvi’s two sons have also been booked in the case. The complainant is Kandivali (west) resident Balkrishna Ranganekar (54).

According to Ranganekar, his son Abhishekh (22) had finished a diploma in electronic and telecommunication. “He couldn’t get admitted into any of the colleges in the city when one of Milind’s sons Nitesh, who is acquainted to my daughter Shraddha, said he could help,” said Ranganekar in the FIR. Nitesh is a resident of Shiv Krupa CHS at Belpada in Kharghar. In September last year, Nitesh and Milind visited the Ranganekars’ house where the former cop talked about his “pull” in such institutions and suggested us one Saraswati College in Kharghar where he could get Abhishekh admitted. After initially quoting an amount of Rs.3 lakh as a ‘donation’, the Salvis reduced it to Rs.2 lakh that did not include the primary fee amount. On September 13, Abhishekh met Nitesh at his Kharghar residence and handed over Rs.75,000 cash. Nitesh then took him to the college and after spending a few minutes inside the prin-

cipal’s cabin while Abhishekh waited outside, came out and confidently announced that everything was “set”. Again on September 17, following Nilesh’s instructions, Shraddha and Abhishekh took Rs. 2.50 lakh – that comprised of Rs.90,000 as donation and Rs.1.25 Lakh as the primary fees – to the Salvis’ Kharghar residence to be converted into a demand draft. Milind Salvi, his wife and sons Nitesh and Manish were present there when Milind kept the Rs.1.75 lakh with himself. Then Nitesh, Manish, Abhishekh and Shraddha headed to nearby SBI branch where Manish deposited Rs. 90,190 in his account and immediately prepared a DD of Rs. 89,910 in the name of Saraswati College of Engineering. “The three then later began giving unclear answers to our queries on the status of the admission. Enquiries with the college revealed that they had received no such fees while the SBI Kharghar branch said Manish had

prevent the birth of a baby, again started having unnatural sex. This led to excess bleeding from the private parts of the victim. Immediately, the vicitm approached the doctor and then complained to the police about her husband’s cruel acts.

Police arrested the accused under sections 377 (Unnatural offences), 315 (Act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and 325 (Punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of IPC. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Wadala rape: Police still clueless By Tariq Khan

T

he Wadala TT police are still groping in the dark in the sexual assault case where a nine-year-old girl was brutally raped and then released, in the incident that took place in Diwali. Several accused matching the description given by the traumatised girl were investigated but were not found to have an involvement in the murder. “We brought several accused who were similar in appearance as described by the girl but none were found to be the assailants. For instance, the girl had said that the man was tall with a thick volume of hair. We rounded up several suspects having that kind of hair but were later released as their claims about their movements and activities on the day of the crime didn’t add up. Around 70 such persons had been questioned. Her younger brother, who too briefly saw the man, gave conflicting descriptions. He first said that the accused had a dark

brown skin tone but later claimed that he was fair. We also picked up a few persons with a black patch on their left hands which was identified by the girl but they too were found to be innocent,” said senior PI Suhas Garud. Police now suspect the accused to be a drifter who has already left town as he could have been otherwise identified by the residents had he been a local. Late night on October 24, the girl was picked up by the accused where she was bursting crackers and playing with her brother and other children in the Shanti Nagar area. Her disappearance was discovered at around 12 am and her parents began searching for her when she returned around 1 am in a brutalised state with bleeding private parts and torn clothes. A case of rape and kidnapping under the IPC along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (PCSOA) was registered against the unknown accused.

nion Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Jawadekar yesterday assured Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that his ministry will look into the state’s projects with an open mind in a transparent manner and grant approvals as early as possible. He said this while chairing an intensive review meeting that discussed key infrastructure development projects of Mumbai and Maharashtra. The projects and issues that came up for discussion included the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) related issues, construction of coastal roads in Mumbai, Metro II CharkopMankhurd project, approvals for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Smarak in the Arabian Sea and the Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Dadar.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed his departmental secretaries to visit New Delhi and personally follow up in securing approvals for the infrastructure projects within the next fortnight. Jawadekar stated that his ministry would soon grant its approval to the construction of a memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj off the coast of Girgaum Chowpatty. Fadnavis stated

that work on the construction of the memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mill compound and beautification of the Chaitya Bhoomi at Dadar will be paced up. The second and third phase of the memorial has been held up due to the CRZ regulations. The Chief Minister urged the Union Environment Minister to resolve some environmental issues related to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) on fast track mode. Fadnavis also urged Jawadekar to work towards making amendments to the environment guidelines so that the Metro II project between CharkopMankhurd can be revived. Jawadekar stated that the Centre will soon take a decision paving the way for redevelopment of fishermen colonies in Mumbai that are currently affected by CRZ III provisions.

ive days after a trader was robbed of Rs 6.7 lakh in Vasai, sleuths of the Palghar district police have apprehended all the three members of the gang who used to keep a watch and target people carrying large amounts of cash. The armed trio would fling chilli powder and then snatch cash and other valuables from the victims who were left helpless due to acute burning sensation in the eyes. According to the police the gang had used the same modus operandi to rob local iron rod trader – Durgesh Mohan Tiwari – who was near the railway station in a shared autorickshaw near Vardhaman junction, in Vasai after collecting payments amounting more than Rs 6.70 lakh from his clients.

However thanks to the alertness of an on-duty police officer from the Valiv police station, one of the miscreants – Satyadev Vishwakarma (22) – was nabbed a few hours after the crime. After rounds of sustained interrogation and intensified search operations, the investigating team led by police sub inspector Prakash Sawant, they managed to nab the other two gang members – Suver Shaikh and Mahesh Khedkar. The police also recovered the stolen cash from the trio who have been booked under sections 394 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The district Sessions Court has remanded the trio to seven days in police custody. Not ruling out the involvement of the trio in other similar crimes, the Valiv police is carrying out further investigations into the case.

‘Missing’ man returns home after release from jail

I

t is a curious case of a missing man returning home giving relief to his family when actually the man was put behind bars by the police under NDPS Act. According to sources, a few days ago, the Trombay police arrested Cheeta Camp resident Yunus Khan (36) under the NDPS Act for consuming drugs and subsequently sent him to Arthur Road jail. Family members

who were unaware of Khan’s arrest frantic a l l y searched for him but to no avail. Eventually they lodged a missing complaint at Trombay police station on November 4. Despite sending Khan to Arthur Road jail a few days ago, the Trombay police lodged a missing complaint and as-

sured his family of finding his whereabouts and advised them to keep searching at their end too. The very same day, Khan was released from Arthur Road jail after which he proceeded straight to Trombay police to collect his mobile, purse and ID card. Even then the Trombay police did not inform him that a missing was lodged complaint against him by his family members. When Khan narrated the

whole incident to his family members, they had nothing to do but laugh at the hilarious deed of the Trombay police. “This shows how the police bungle up complaints causing agony to aggrieved family members,” said a social worker from Cheeta Camp. Senior police inspector at the Trombay police station refused to take phone calls, while officials concerned with the goof-up refuse to comment on the case. Pics : Sushil Kadam | ADC

was kidnapped, assaulted, intimidated of dire consequences and compelled to sign blank papers by my employer, of which police refused to take cognizance,” lamented Kishor Bhandari, a resident of Krishna Township, Vasai (West), when he first visited an advocate.

After many meetingsbetween Bhandari, who was accompanied by his father, cousin, neighbour and a friend, two notices were prepared; when suddenly Bandari requested the advocate not to serve any notice to the police, and only to his employer. After a few days,

Bhandari once again visited his advocate and begged her to serve the police with a notice, sand it being Saturday evening, post was out of question, therefore it was sent through someone and the police refused to accept it; thereafter the advocate had to personally go to Waliv Police Station on Sunday afternoon, but she learnt from the police that her client himself was a thief.

counter specialist Vijay Salaskar. She had alleged that the details were first denied to her. However, when information was provided in November 2009 and February 2010, there were "serious discrepancies". "Maria did not allow information to be shared with Vinita Kamte. It is highly irresponsible. Is he trying to hide some information in the matter? It looks like if an impartial inquiry is not initiated then Vinita and the public will not be able to receive true information," the order that read like a virtual indictment of Maria, who took over as Mumbai police commissioner in February this year said.

Kamte has accused Maria of not telling her who sent her husband towards Cama Hospital where he was killed even though he was in charge of the main control room during the first few hours of the attack. The commission had criticised Maria and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Amitabh Rajan, saying that they did not attend two previous hearings, which showed their lack of seriousness about the entire incident. "Maria gave various reasons for not attending the hearings, while Rajan did not give any reason for remaining absent," Gaikwad had said. After Kamte's lawyers had raised the issue of certain discrepancies in information

provided to her about the call logs, regarding timings mentioned in those, and raised doubts about their manipulation, the commission had asked Rajan to probe it. Her lawyer had claimed that there was a difference of six minutes in the call logs and the main voice logger was not secured. "Instead of himself (Rajan) conducting an inquiry into the incident, Rajan relied on the findings of the officers, who themselves were under the scanner, and then submitted the report. This is a very serious matter as he did not follow the commission's order. Such behaviour does not befit a senior bureaucrat," the CIC had said. Kamte had

also claimed that she was given two completely different call log records from the south control room. The state had, meanwhile, submitted a different call record in the chargesheet it filed in the case. In the book, 'To The Last Bullet' co-authored by her, Kamte had blamed Maria for not sending reinforcements to help her husband, appearing to give wrong information about the shootout that left three officers dead, and not helping them get medical assistance after they had been shot. Following the allegations levelled against him in the book that was released in 2009, Maria, one of the most high-profile IPS officers in the country, had reportedly offered to resign.

he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a strong hold on the state with its recent victory in the Assembly elections and it is gearing up to use this power to its advantage in the BMC, despite the fact that its al-

liance partner has hitherto dominated the civic body. The BJP will work hard to push policy changes and eventually install a mayor of their choice. A BJP spokesperson from the BMC said, “Our first job will be to remove Octroi and the Local Body Tax (LBT), work on the

redevelopment policy, Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, and of course to fight for the betterment of the city, as always. We are not only at the top in the state but also in the city.” The BJP is looking to obtain more seats than the Sena in the next BMC elections

and are confident of winning. “Our hard work has already begun and the next mayor in the civic administration will be ours,” said the spokesperson. The BMC runs on an annual budget of more than Rs 32,000 crore. which is substantial to say the least.

dengue can be controlled,” said Dr Rajan Naringrekar, chief insecticide officer, BMC. This is what the BMC has done: In 2014, till the month of October, the BMC has sent 13,215 notices to residential areas, commercial set ups and individuals as well, 344 investigative reports have been made, 864 people have been prosecuted while Rs 23,22,400 has been collected as fine.

While correspondingly in 2013, the number of notices sent were 19,677, 690 investigative reports were made, 1,166 prosecutions were done and Rs 36,25,000 was collected as fine. So the number of notices, prosecutions and fine amounts seem to have come down this year which can probably be a result of increased awareness. To this Dr Naringrekar said, “One can not compare these numbers as 2014 is yet to end. Also, the elections had an impact on the work being carried out so certain procedures have been delayed. But yes, awareness with regards to public and private premises has increased but when it comes to taking precautions inside houses, much needs to be done by the people of the city.” So, the BMC feels that it has done all that can be done, and now the public need to do their bit.

he affected residents of the Worli Campa Cola Compound on Wednesday met the newly elected Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis and have submitted a petition, hoping that he would do something to regularise their illegal flats. They are also happy after the Supreme Court’s recent statement that it is not averse to any possible relief given by the new government to the residents of the society. Fadnavis assured them that a solution will be found and that his government would seek time from the apex court to bring a legislation. A resident who did not wish to be named said, “Our hopes are on the new government as they have always stood with us even before the elections, and all Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have always been supportive during our fight.” The apex court earlier had rejected the submission that at least the illegal flats be not demolished till the time it decides the curative petition of the residents' association

in the case. The residents had mentioned that under section 53 of the MRTP Act, there is a clear provision for regularisation of unauthorised properties. However, the government may save 81 flats out of the 97 flats which are to be demolished, which fall under the permissible Floor Space Index (FSI) limits, and so can be regularised. The residents are planning to submit a clarification request to the apex court. The next hearing in the Supreme Court is on November 10. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.i

Ponder awhile… “You can only find truth with logic if you have already found truth without it.” — Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Tackling dengue A

DIRTY stream is flowing along the Eastern Express highway. An effort appears to have been made to cover it all the way with plastic material. Along the entire stretch of the stream, there are many openings. Why has the BMC left these openings? And then, the covering itself has been done in a shoddy way. It is certain that thousands of dengue mosquitoes are born here. And when they are ready to fly out they do so through the openings. Among other places, they can make a beeline to Matoshree. This is one clear instance to show that the prevention of dengue has not been done as it should have been. The BMC appears to be quite ignorant about how to go about it. For instance, in some buildings across the suburbs, BMC men have moved in and got all pots carrying plants taken away from balconies and other places. They have allowed however the pots to be kept outside the building – with plants being watered everyday. The spraying of pesticide is also far from satisfactory. There are many areas where they never go. There have been over 1,000 reported dengue cases in the city. What is to be noted is that all the cases are not reported. Already nearly a dozen deaths are confirmed by the BMC. In the last several years, this year dengue has claimed more lives. Proper preventive measures do not seem to have been taken. What is pathetic is citizens are even threatened with arrest if they do not do what the BMC says.

‘Love is not of the mind’ L

OVE is a fusion between two people, it is exclusive, and in it there is both pain and joy. Can a commoner like me ever know love? Sir, everybody can know love, but you can know it only when you are capable of looking at facts very clearly, without resistance, without justification, without explaining them away - just look at things closely, observe them very clearly and minutely. Now, what is the thing that we call love? The questioner says that it is exclusive, and that in it we know pain and joy. Is love exclusive? We shall find out when we examine what we call love, what the so-called common man calls love. There is no common man. There is only man, which is you and I. The common man is a fictitious entity invented by the politicians. There is only man, which is you and I, who are in sorrow, in pain, in anxiety, and fear. Now, what is our life? To find out what love is, let us begin with what we know. What is our love? In the midst of pain and pleasure we know it is exclusive, personal: my wife, my children, my country, my God. We know it as a flame in the midst of smoke, we know it through jealousy, we know it through domination, we know it through possession, we know it through loss when the other is gone. So, we know love as sensation, do we not? When we say we love, we know jealousy, we know fear, we know anxiety. When you say you love someone, all that is implied: envy, the desire to possess, the desire to own, to dominate, the fear of loss, and so on. All this we call love, and we do not know love without fear, without envy, without pos-

session; we merely verbalize that state of love which is without fear; we call it impersonal, pure, divine, or God knows what else, but the fact is that we are jealous, we are dominating, possessive. We shall know that state of love only when jealousy, envy, possessiveness, domination, come to an end, and as long as we possess, we shall never love. Envy, possession, hatred, the desire to dominate the person or the thing called 'mine', the desire to possess and to be possessed — all that is a process of thought, is it not? And is love a process of thought? Is love a thing of the mind? Actually, for most of us, it is. Do not say it is not - it is nonsense to say that.

MATTER & SPIRIT Do not deny the fact that your love is a thing of the mind. Surely it is, is it not? Otherwise, you would not possess, you would not dominate, you would not say, "It is mine." And as you do say it, your love is a thing of the mind; so love, for you, is a process of thought. You can think about the person whom you love, but thinking about the person whom you love - is that love? When do you think about the person whom you love? You think about her when she is gone, when she is away, when she has left you. But when she no longer disturbs you, when you can say, "She is mine," then you do not have to think about her. You do not have to think about your furniture; it is part of you - which is a process of identification so as not to be disturbed, to avoid trouble, anxiety, sorrow. So, you miss the person

eral Anti-avoidance Rules (GAAR) in the 2012 Budget, and the case of South Korea's steel major POSCO. It also said that Australian government led by Tony Abbott has favoured created the right conditions for private enterprise as the best way governments can increase job opportunities and raise productivity. "Through it presidency of the G20 Australia thus has the standing and the motivation to press European leaders to undertake structural reforms, including more liberal immigration policies". "It will not however be an easy task," the paper said adding that Australia will find an able partner in India, given the latter's experience with Mode-4 services.

India's infrastructure deficit In the classification scheme of the WTO, Mode-4 services are those supplied by individuals present in person. The term is used to refer to the movement of natural persons, such as IT professionals, scientists and others, traveling from their own country to provide services in another country. It also stressed that Australia was keen to help developing and less developed economies lacking expertise to prepare project reports required to attract infrastructure related funds which can be significant benefit for India, that has huge infrastructure deficit. The G20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States — and the European Union. (From Natasha Chaku in Melbourne, with inputs from PTI) whom you say you love only when you are disturbed, when you are in suffering; and as long as you possess that person, you do not have to think about that person, because in possession there is no disturbance. But when possession is disturbed, you begin to think, and then you say, "I love that person." So your love is merely a reaction of the mind, is it not? - which means your love is merely a sensation, and sensation is surely not love. Do you think about the person when you are close to him, sirs and ladies? When you possess, hold, dominate, control, when you can say, "She is mine" or "He is mine," there is no problem. As long as you are certain in your possession, there is no problem, is there? And society, everything you have built around you, helps you to possess so as not to be disturbed, so as not to think about it. Thinking comes when you are disturbed - and you are bound to be disturbed as long as your thinking is what you call "love." Surely, love is not a thing of the mind, and because the things of the mind have filled our hearts, we have no love. The things of the mind are jealousy, envy, ambition, the desire to be somebody, to achieve success. These things of the mind fill your hearts, and then you say you love, but how can you love when you have all these confusing elements in you? When there is smoke, how can there be a pure flame? Love is not a thing of the mind, and love is the only solution to our problems. Love is not of the mind, and the man who has accumulated money or knowledge can never know love because he lives with the things of the mind; his activities are of the mind, and whatever he touches he makes into a problem, a confusion, a misery. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2014

Tendulkar’s timing questionable THE truth in Tendulkar's tale is coming out in open from the horse's mouth. Rahul Dravid made it clear that there was no difference of opinion and everything is just made up to make Greg Chappell, the villain of Sachin's story, made public after seven years of its happening. Rahul Dravid, one of the legends in Indian cricket, countered former skipper Sourav Ganguly’s claim that The Wall was fully aware of what Greg Chappell was up to during his stint as India coach, but could not control the Australian. The former skipper refuses to join the bandwagon of Chappell bashers and asked Ganguly not to put words into his mouth. Dravid made it clear that he had no such conversation with Ganguly. While most Indian cricketers from the Chappell era have wasted no time in calling him a dictator, Dravid begged to differ and made it clear that he had no issues with the Australian. Dravid also refused to take the bait when asked if he was willing to react to Tendulkar’s claim that Chappell had offered the captaincy of the team to Tendulkar prior to the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. Further he was not privy to any such conversation and would like to wait before reading the book and only comment then if he feels necessary, rather than reacting now.

– Sachin, Laxman, Dravid and Ganguly lost out their place without the interference of the coach. It was just a tit for tat way of criticising the coach and will not serve any purpose in improving the standard of the game in India. — S Abhisheck Ramaswamy, Sion

IT has been a sordid state of affairs after the release of 'Playing it my way'. Tendulkar could play with a straight bat during cricketing career but now did not show restraint in blaming Greg Chappell. Sachin is getting support from Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and the monkey gate fame Harbhajan Singh. Sachin saved the Sardar of spin from that epic episode and now he is trying to save his saviour. But I don't think it is right to blame the coach for the debacle in the 2007 World Cup. An opinion poll endorses this view. To get cheap publicity for his autobiography, Sachin did all this and wanted to settle scores with a senior coach after his retirement. Greg Chappell spoke his mind on the autobiography of Sachin Tendulkar and felt that the player went overboard in revealing certain things which were not discussed with the record holder in world cricket. — C K Subramaniam, Sanpada

World Cup. When Tendulkar tried to reason out why he should only bat at the top of the order, his stand was seen by some as selfish and he felt his commitment to Indian cricket was being questioned. On his return from the World Cup, where India failed to make even the second stage, he lashed out at Chappell and took it up with the Indian cricket board. There are a number of instances when the board went by what the seniors said and sacked Indian coaches quietly. Chappell, in an interview a couple of years later, was in a mellow mood and regretted his decision to force Tendulkar to bat lower down. So Tendulkar’s narrative has to been seen in the backdrop of what happened before the disastrous World Cup. Chappell had picked on a technical detail when he suggested to Tendulkar that he should replace Rahul Dravid as captain, by saying the only time he visited the Master Blaster’s residence was 12 months before the World Cup and not “just months away.” Be that as it may, Tendulkar’s credentials as a player cannot be questioned. When he decides to tell his story, it cannot be only on what happened out in the middle, he is bound to discuss what transpired behind the iron curtain the board had created. — Bhagwan Thandani, via email

SACHIN Tendulkar has always played his cricket with a straight bat but his outburst against former coach Greg Chappell after a decade of the events happening surprises us all. We believe every word Tendulkar says but what amused us is the reason why he kept quiet when all these irregularities were happening? Greg Chappell as an Indian coach was always a misfit as he tried to bestow his authority on some of India's biggest cricketing heroes like Ganguly, Dravid, Tendulkar and Co. People like Tendulkar who are national icons should have protested at the time when such filth was dished and what good would it do now if these facts are made public. At best, it would give Tendulkar's autobiography publicity which would sell like hot cakes and nothing more to

benefit the game of cricket in general. The person too is at fault if one keeps quiet in spite of knowing the damage that is being done around you and Sachin I am afraid too is at fault and has done Indian cricket some damage by not revolting against Greg Chappell when the Australian was busy damaging the morale of our side.

IT is widely known that the Australian cricketers put their country's interests above their personal interests whereas it is the other way round in Indian cricket. Greg Chappell was considered one of the best batsmen of his time and as an Indian Coach he was enforcing the Australian culture. The grapevine has it that he felt that Tendulkar was obsessed with promoting his own interests than that of the team and hence wanted him to bat at No 4 instead of opening in the onedayers. When Tendulkar still insisted on opening without having regards to the teams' requirements, Greg Chappell did not seem to have minced words by asking him to warm the bench if he was not willing to bat at No 4. Tendulkar, not used to such frank talk, was upset and must have felt that he was being probed for the first time.

AMID CONTROVERSY: Sachin Tendulkar, known largely as the God of cricket, has stirred controversy with the allegations made against former Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell in his autobiographical book.

Tendulkar continued to be in the Indian Team notwithstanding his prolonged poor form and managed to have a farewell series with the weakest West Indian side to complete his 200 Test matches to fulfill his personal interests. Hence, Tendulkar has to address himself and answer more about his attitude than commenting on some coach merely because he did not dance to his tunes. It will be hard for Tendulkar to answer the facts but easy to bulldoze. — T M Uday Shankar, via email

WELL, the autobiography is out, but like a careful establishment man, nothing has been said against officialdom or officials in cricket. After all, how then will you get awards and other quid pro quos. But here is the real achievement of the author. Single-handedly, with the help of media, sponsors and officialdom, he has killed all other games and sports in this country for at least two generations. While the process did begin earlier with the advent of colour and channel TV and the 1983 World Cup win, the author ensured that there was no hope for any other game to be revived. — T R Ramaswami, Kandivali

artists in recent times and Sadashiv Amarpurkar's death has created a big vacuum in the film industry. It is a great loss for Bollywood. Marathi and Bollywood actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar passed away after battling with lung infection for over a fortnight. Amrapurkar was put on ventilator support and had been in a critical condition for the past few days. The actor had worked in movies like 'Ishq', 'Aankhen', 'Gupt' and several others. With strong roots in rural and Marathi theatre, Amrapurkar made his film debut with Govind Nihalani’s acclaimed — Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara 'Ardhsatya' in 1983. His performance in the film as a local mafia don won him several awards. BOLLYWOOD is losing seasoned — Jayanthy S Maniam, Sanpada

WITH the demise of Sadashiv Amrapurkar, we lost not only the actor, but also a great villain and a comedian. It is very difficult to prove such versatility in reel life, and this great actor did it. From Ramashetty of 'Ardhasatya' to Pyaare Mohan of 'Aankhe' was the evidence of his growth. In the middle of his career growth, one can not forget his milestone acting of the villain role of Maharani of 'Sadak'. He was a true all-rounder actor for the Hindi-Marathi movie industries. We pay homage, from the bottom of our heart that may his soul rest in peace.

Less than half of HSBC list accounts have no money: SIT report N

ew Delhi: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on blackmoney has found that less than half of the HSBC bank list of over 600 accounts did not have any money while more than hundred names were a repeat, hampering the possibility of any action against them. The Income Tax department is now mulling prosecution against 300 entities figuring in the list of 628 entries in the HSBC Geneva list given to the Supreme Court recently, official sources said. The SIT found and reported that there was no amount shown in almost 289 HSBC Geneva entries, while 122 of them were repeated twice in the same list. "The SIT found that the biggest impediment in taking action against the people listed in this particular lot was that there were no

details about the operations of these accounts. It was not reflected in the list as to when these accounts were opened and what was their transaction history," the sources said. The report of the SIT, headed by retired Supreme Court Judge M B Shah with Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat as its Vice-Chairman, said the I-T department had undertaken 150 search or survey operations against those named in the list but prosecution proceedings were yet not final against them. "Now that this list has been handed over to the apex court and the cases are nearing time barring stage by the end of this fiscal, the department is mulling to launch prosecution in close to 300 cases," they said. The SIT has also sought "renegotiation" of various tax information exchange treaties.

Fishermen hold token strike C

hennai: Protesting the death sentence awarded to five members of their ilk by a Sri Lankan court for drug trafficking, about 30 lakh fishermen in Tamil Nadu today went on a one-day strike, urging Centre to put pressure on Colombo for their release. Fishermen stayed off the sea in 13 coastal districts of the state including Nagapattinam, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram among others, fishermen association representatives claimed. Shops were downed in fishermen-dominated localities of the state with black flags hoisted on their homes as a mark of protest, they added. The Sri Lankan court's decision had come as a 'shock' and Thursday's protest was a 'token strike,' they said.

RARE CLASSICS

Yamini Walia visited the newly opened luxury boutique, Rare Heritage, to find out whether it lives up to its promise of providing timeless pieces

A

store that houses antique designs with a modern sensibility is how I would describe Rare Heritage, a luxury boutique that has set up shop in Malad. The store is located near the station, right opposite the famous Natraj market, but finding it can still prove to be a task. I recommend you ask for directions, so as to avoid getting lost, which I came close to doing. You’ll have to ring a bell to enter the store, which makes it seem rather exclusive. The door is embellished with intricate, ethnic work, giving off a very royal vibe. Spread over two floors, Rare Heritage houses jewellery and silverware on the lower level, while the second level showcases a wide range of bridal attire such as saris, lehengas and gowns, as well as a limited range of shoes and clutches. All the bridal pieces are studded with lapis lazuli, emerald and authentic zari embroidery. While this may seem a little oldfashioned, they’ve managed to add a contemporary touch to every piece. From peplums to structured jackets, you can pick an outfit in your favourite style. Even the clutches are adorned with exquisite zari work. As I looked at the jewellery, I realised that the pieces are not limited to bridal wear, as the store also has everyday options for both men and women. If you’re looking for customisation, the store is a good place to visit as it allows brides to customise everything from clothes to jewellery, to suit any requirement or budget. The silverware too can be personalised by engraving dates and names on it, and

The store also provides high-end luxury services such as personalised pick-ups and drops for customers and you can also ask the store to remain closed for the day if you want complete privacy. One of the USPs of the store is their policy that lets you browse through the merchandise by yourself, so no one hounds you while you are looking through. The store caters to all budgets, with the jewellery priced between `1 lakh and `1 crore and the bridal wear range starting from `30,000 and going up to `7 lakhs. I was quite impressed by the collection at Rare Heritage and while for walk-ins and casual shoppers, there’s not much to see, I would recommend visiting if you are looking for something timeless, yet trendy, especially for a special occasion.

If you like simplicity but want some glamourous décor, Sara Shah tells you why D’Decor is the place for you

O

ctober marked the launch of D’Decor’s flagship store in Bandra. Located amongst the hustle and bustle of Turner Road, this plush store houses D’Decor’s trademark home décor merchandise. Although the launch was a sparkling, classy affair, the store stood out because of the simplicity of its interiors. The store has minimalistic décor, with concrete flooring and a high, wooden ceiling. Strategically placed lights beautifully illuminate the collections housed at the store. Spread over two floors, the collections are placed in a manner that allows customers plenty of room to walk around and browse through. The store doesn’t have a vast collection, but it’s sufficient to fulfill your décor requirements, housing contemporary European designs in plush fabrics that are classy and luxurious. Most of the products, including the upholstery, curtains and bed furnishings, are available in colours such as black, white and various shades of brown. Their versatile bedroom furnishings come bearing pretty floral patterns in gold and silver and can be purchased in sets, complete with bed sheets, pillow cases, curtains and scented candles. However, it was their wallpapers that caught my eye, as many of them were available in colours such as bold pink, lime green and blue, in varied styles such as stripes, ornamental patterns and geometric prints, which contrasted beautifully with the otherwise subtle furnishings. D’Decor also has a separate collection for kids, which is a joint venture with Disney and Marvel. The bedding has popular Disney and Marvel cartoon characters printed on them, and even though I’m not a fan of cartoon prints, I thought they had done a good job. The store is expensive, so much so that all their prices are on request. However, I think their collection is impressive. Their home décor and furnishings are simple, but ooze class. If elegance and sophistication is your style, you won’t leave disappointed.

W

the Wood fired, oven baked Chilean sea bass, with arugula mashed potatoes, dill and lemon sauce, served with a lemon risotto (`2,700) and the Chilly, lime and oregano marinated king prawns, with roasted garlic and chive risotto (`1,200). The sea bass was cooked to perfection, and flaked beautifully even at the slightest touch of my fork, while the king prawns, were definitely messier to eat, but flavourful nonetheless. A special mention goes to the risottos that accompanied both dishes, as they complemented them beautifully. Although we were stuffed to our gills, we tried the Salted Caramel Tart (`395) for a spot of dessert. Now, I’m not too keen on caramel, but this tart is sublime. The tart itself is buttery and baked perfectly, not hard as a crisp and not so crumbly that you can’t eat it with a fork. As for the filling, the burnt, salted caramel was delicious and paired well with the dark chocolate ganache it was topped with. While there is no denying that dining at Two One Two Bar & Grill is an expensive proposition, it is money well spent. SamPle Some SangRia Sangria, the classic cocktail, is usually quite a hassle to make at home, but with Turning Point offering sangria in a bottle, it just got easier, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

T

art green apples with a hint of fruity white wine... swirls of orange mixed with robust reds... you’ve suddenly got a craving for sangria. However, going out to a restaurant just to order a glass is not something you want to do — forget making one at home. Well, Turning Point comes to a quick rescue, with its newly launched sangria — available in colourful bottles with youth-friendly graffiti prints. With 11% alcohol content in each bottle, the bottled sangria is an easy, no-fuss way to enjoy a glass (or two!) — and if you miss the chopped fruits, add some of your own and pour it in to a glass. I couldn’t wait to try them out, especially since they’re affordable enough to keep going back for more. Here’s what I thought of the two flavours available.

aBSTRakT if you live anywhere in or around chembur, we’re sure that you’re bemoaning the lack of good eateries in the area. So, when a restaurant like abstrakt Bistro & lounge opened its swanky doors, yamini Walia couldn’t wait to visit

ocated opposite Nehru Centre, Two One Two Bar & Grill doesn’t have an outer façade that screams for attention. But, step into their premises, and you will feel the opulence in the air. The restaurant doesn’t go all out in terms of décor, but head into the cool interiors, past the small al fresco seating area, and you can almost anticipate the fine dining experience you are about to sit down to. Since we happened to visit them on a dry day, we couldn’t sample any of their cocktails, but going purely by what’s on paper — their selection seems delectable. Diving straight towards the food, we started our meal with the Cappuccino of baby spinach, truffle foam with garlic baguette (`345), which was smoky, creamy, mildly flavoured and had us craving for seconds. We followed it up with Tenderloin carpaccio, with parmigiano cheese and rocket leaves (`650). The salad was rather simple, but it’s simplicity is what made it so delicious. The sharp rocket pairs well with the slivers of cheese and wafer-thin slices of tenderloin that have been seasoned mildly, with a balsamic dressing that this salad together beautifully. We also tried the Bacon wrapped prawns with chilli-garlic butter and iceberg lettuce (`610) and Wild mushrooms and goat cheese phyllo wraps with spicy harrisa sauce and mixed greens (`450), both of which were exemplary. The prawns packed a punch, but it was the phyllo parcels that were our favourite — the wild mushrooms and goat cheese filling was delicate, but with a great flavour profile and the wispy, phyllo casing added just the right amount of crunch. For main course, we started off with the 212 signature pizza with streaky bacon, chorizo sausage, camembert Cheese, blue cheese and portobello mushrooms (`790). Although the cured sausage and sharp cheese made this pizza a touch too salty, we got used to it after a few bites and were left marvelling at the great quality of chorizo sausage used. Next up was Malfati (`690), an Italian pasta made with ricotta, spinach, buffalo’s milk mozzarella in a spicy, fresh tomato sauce. This dish was one of the highlights of our meal. The ricotta and spinach mixture was delicious, as was the sauce it was doused in, made with fresh tomatoes (as promised) and seasoned perfectly — neither too sour, nor artificially sweet. Then, we tried two seafood dishes,

What it contains: Orange and ginger ale how it tastes: Ginger ale was a flavour I was excited to try. Orange? Not so much. I’m used to green apple in my sangria — and I usually pick white just to avoid orange, since I’m not a fan. However, this surprising combination really works. The orange lifts the flavour of the ginger ale

What it contains: Orange and cranberry how it tastes: I’m a fan of red wine, so I thought this would be right up my alley — minus my distaste for orange. However, the subtle hints in the white wine, perked my hopes up. However, while light and airy works well with white wine, here it tasted watered down. There’s a slight bitterness on your palette after and while it’s a decent sangria, I wasn’t as impressed. Price: `135 for 330ml Where Wine shops across the city

ith lighting that resembles forest foliage at its entrance, Abstrakt Bistro & Lounge is visible from quite a distance. As soon as I entered the place, the casual vibe of the restaurant caught my attention. The décor has a pub feel, with blackboards over the bar listing specials, a community table and yellow lights hanging from the ceiling. My dining companion and I were definitely impressed. We sat on the comfortable sofas and looked forward to our experience. First, we tried their soups — Seafood Broth (`160) and Seafood Manchow (`160). The broth was exactly how I like my soup to be — subtly spiced but richly flavoured. The manchow, another excellent option, is for people who enjoy tangy soups. I don’t usually order salad, but their menu had some interesting options, so we opted to try their Chicken Tikka Salad (`189), which sounded unique. The vegetables were extremely fresh and the chicken was melt-in-the-mouth. >> The interiors of Abstrakt Bistro & Lounge give off a casual vibe

We tried a few appetisers, such as the Mushrooms in Pesto Sauce (`169), Loaded Nachos (`189), Prawns Salt & Pepper (`265), Chicken Satay (`249) and Amritsari Fish Tikka (`289). While the non-vegetarian starters were delicious, it was the vegetarian options that left us asking for more. The consistency and the texture of the pesto sauce was perfect and the beans added a classic, spicy touch to the nachos that we really enjoyed. I am huge pesto fan, and I couldn’t get enough of their delicious pesto sauce, so I ordered their Pesto Pizza (`299) — a mixture of grilled chicken, sautéed mushrooms, olives and sundried tomatoes — just so I eat more of it. The thin crust pizza was extremely delectable and was peppered with enough chicken pieces to satisfy my cravings. We also tried their Mushroom & Pepper Risotto (`259). If you have had risottos before, you know that the rice can get a little bland for a palate more suited to spice. However, the peppery touch added a nice flavour to an otherwise plain risotto. Very often, restaurants that serve excellent starters and main course dishes fail to deliver good desserts, but this is not the case with Abstrakt. Both desserts — Caramel Custard (`125) and Panacotta (`125) were extremely soft and mind-numbingly delicious. The staff at the restaurant is quite friendly and the service is quick. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who lives in or around Chembur and even if you don’t, this restaurant is a good reason to stop by when you’re passing through. Although the asset quality of public sector banks may have hit a bottom, the recovery in corporate credit quality will take some time, says Moody's By A Business Reporter

T

he asset quality of state-owned banks will continue to be burdened by weak financial health of Indian corporates, credit rating agency Moody's said yesterday. It said although the asset quality of public sector banks may have hit a bottom, the recovery in corporate

credit quality will take some time. The non-performing assets of banks will continue to act as a drag on the bank's credit quality, Moody's said. "We expect net new non-performing loan (NPL) formation rates for public-sector banks to be lower than those observed over the last three years, while the impaired loan ratio may stabilise at current levels," Moody's Vice President and Senior Analyst Srikanth Vadlamani said. The agency said that over the next two years new NPL formation rates would witness a gradual decline It said the health of corporates in India, while having stabilised, continues to be fragile on an absolute basis with high debt levels and weak debt-servicing metrics. "This is par-

ticularly relevant for public sector banks, which have a higher share of corporate loans in their loan books than private sector banks," it said. Moody's expects that Indian corporates will increase their de-leveraging efforts as conducive market conditions make it easier to raise equity and sell assets. However, despite the favourable market conditions, it will take at least 2-3 years for a meaningful reduction in leverage owing to the high debt levels, it said, adding that the PSU banks will continue to have a high level of credit. "This will constrain their internal capital generation and make them dependent on external capital infusion to increase their low capital levels," Moody's added.

Valuation Of BSE Listed Cos Nears Rs 100 Lakh Cr By A Business Reporter

A

s the benchmark BSE Sensex is witnessing a dream-rally, the total market valuation of BSE-listed companies has inched closer to the Rs 100 lakh crore mark. At present, the total market capitalisation (mcap) of BSE-listed companies stands at Rs 97,13,196 crore which is just Rs 2.86 lakh short of the Rs 100 lakh crore milestone. In terms of the US dollar, the total market valuation of BSE-listed companies has surged to USD 1.58 trillion at the current rupee rate of 61.41 against the Greenback. India had first entered the trillion-dollar club in June 2007, but moved out in

September 2008 after a global meltdown. It again got back into the elite league in May 2009 and largely remained there except for some brief time, including once in 2012. In August 2013, it had again slipped out of the list. The Sensex has gained 6,745.2 points, or 31.86 per cent, so far this year. The index had hit its all-time high of 28,010.39 yesterday. Experts said expectations of more reforms by the Narendra Modi-led government and a rate cut by the RBI has helped markets scale new heights. The Sensex blue-chips whose market valuation is more than Rs 1 lakh crore include TCS, ONGC, RIL, ITC, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Coal India,

SBI, ICICI Bank, Sun Pharma, HDFC, HUL, L&T, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Wipro, NTPC, HCL Tech and Axis Bank. Outsourcing giant TCS is the most valued Indian company with a market cap of Rs 5,09,435.77 crore. Market-men said Indian markets are also making merry, helped by smart foreign fund inflows. Since the beginning of this year, overseas investors have infused a net amount of Rs 82,266 crore (USD 13.7 billion) into the equities, while they invested a net of Rs 1.36 lakh crore into the debt market (USD 22.5 billion) taking the total to Rs 2.18 lakh crore (USD 36 billion).

almost 289 HSBC Geneva entries, while 122 of them were repeated twice in the same list By A Business Reporter

T

he Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money has found that less than half of the HSBC bank list of over 600 accounts did not have any money while more than hundred names were a repeat, hampering the possibility of any action against them. The Income Tax department is now mulling prosecution against 300 entities figuring in the list of 628 entries in the HSBC Geneva list given to the Supreme Court recently, PTI quoting official sources said. The SIT found and reported that there was no amount shown in almost 289 HSBC Geneva entries, while 122 of them were repeated twice in the same list."The SIT found that the biggest impediment in taking action against the people listed in this particular lot was that there were no details about the operations of these accounts. The SIT has also sought "renegotiation" of various tax information exchange treaties which India

has with various countries and tax haven nations in order to effectively curb the menace of illegal funds stashed abroad. In the report submitted to the government early this year, the SIT has cited the areas of concern for the investigating and enforcement agencies which are tasked to keep a check on these 'black' funds and illegal economy. "The SIT has asked the government to take up renegotiation of the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) and the Tax Information Exchange Treaties (TIEAs) in context of some specific countries. "This is a timeconsuming affair but an early start would help the country in accomplishing its desire to crack down on illegal funds kept overseas by Indians," official sources said quoting the SIT report. As a consequence of this specific request, the government told the SIT that the Finance Ministry has already begun the exercise in this direction. "The government informed the SIT that out of the 78 DTAAs India had, renegotiation has been taken up with 75 countries for providing banking information under this legal mode of exchange of tax information. The other three countries-- Tajikistan, Iceland and Myanmar-- already have this arrangement," sources said. The government also told the SIT, sources said, that it has completed re-negotiations in approximately 31 cases, has sought the approval of the Cabinet for the same in about 30 cases while India is wanting to have new DTAAs, which will include banking related clauses, with over 50 countries.

uperstar Akshay Kumar says the Rs 100-200 crore clubs in Bollywood do not excite him as an actor anymore.

The 47-year-old star, who is behind hits including 'Entertainment', 'Holiday', 'Special 26', 'OMG – Oh My God!', says he wants to take risks as a producer-actor. "I do four films in a year. And I do that quite easily and I get a lot of holidays. I always reach on time on sets. So why shouldn't I do four films? I like to do new things in films. I don't look out for 100-200 crore clubs. I love to take on risky stuff that I see as creatively satisfying." Akshay will start his next project with Karan Johar. Titled 'Brothers', the film also has Siddharth Malhotra. "I am going to start my schedule in 'Brothers'. I have lost about 10 kilos for this role. Siddharth Malhotra has gained 10 kilos. He is bulked up and is looking great. And as his brother I am supposed to look weak in front of him," he said. Akshay, who will be seen in a guest appearance in his upcoming production venture 'The Shaukeens' says he does not want to do hero-centric films as he is bored. "I don't want to do only hero films...I have to change myself because I get bored. I just can't do films like 'Rowdy Rathore' again and again. There are films like 'Gabbar', 'Baby' and 'Airlift' where I will be seen in different avatars," he said. The 'Khiladi' star has wrapped up the shooting of Neeraj Pandey's action-thriller 'Baby' in just 32 days. "Neeraj Pandey has worked on the film for 1.5 years and he must have made 10-12 drafts of the film. He has completed the film in total 50 days," he added.

‘The Shaukeens’ again Piyush Mishra is a popular actor, writer, and music director. He plays one of the lead roles in ‘The Shaukeens’ which is creating a lot of buzz. We had a candid chat with the multifaceted Piyush at the press meet for the film.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

You accepted a role that Paresh Rawal rejected... It’s not a role that Paresh Rawal rejected, it's just that he didn’t have dates to spare for the film. When I was offered this plum role in the remake of Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Shaukeen’ I was happy to accept because I'm a fan of the original. The script has been reworked for this film. After doing serious films, this movie gave me a chance to let my hair down. I had the best time of my life. I'm glad I got the opportunity to do something different.

What is your character like in the film? I play a wealthy food grain businessman called Harishakar Goel whose pet name is Pinky. He has money but has no

class. He knows only to lech, even in Mauritius! Pinky, who has not consummated his marriage, is sexually frustrated and lusts after Lisa Haydon along with his friends played by Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor. Akshay Kumar plays himself, the star after whom Lisa is crazy after. It’s not sleazy or vulgar. The writer Tigmanshu Dhulia has written a clean, flirtatious comedy which. Which films have given you the maximum satisfaction? I'd say 'Maqbool' and 'Gangs of Wasseypur'.

Who is your favourite director? I'm a fan of Raj Kumar Hirani, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Bannerjee.

Unlike certain Bollywood actresses who raise hypocritical shields to justify their dare-bare skin show, the uninhibited Nandana Sen has no apologetic pretences about “having performed sensuously erotic, yet aesthetic” scenes in the slice-of-history movie ‘Rang Rasiya’.

NANDANA: A

ctor Ranveer Singh, who is working with Govinda in his upcoming film 'Kill Dil', says he is a huge admirer of the 'Raja Babu' star and has grown up on his movies. Directed by Shaad Ali, maker of 'Saathiya', the Yash Raj Films' latest venture will see Ranveer sharing screen space with Govinda, Ali Zafar and Parineeti Chopra. Ranveer says it was a dream come true to work with '90s superstar. "It is a very entertaining film full of comedy, romance,

drama and action. Govindaji is a legend. He really is a master and his approach is very very old school. I am probably one of his biggest fans. I have seen his films – some of them more than 50 times. I don't love all of his movies but I love him. He is an icon," Ranveer said in a group interview. The actor feels it is Zafar's best work so far. Ranveer revealed that unlike his previous toned avatar, Shaad Ali asked him to put on weight for 'Kill Dil'. "In 'Gunday' my face

looked very hard and manly. That was needed in 'Ramleela' too. But in 'Kill Dil' I needed a face which is cute and sweet. So I shaved, got a hair cut and if you look at me from closely, my cheeks look very chubby. "My character is like a child who has no philosophy. He always follows his big brother's instructions and then Parineeti comes in his life. She makes him realise that there can be a different life too," he said. 'Kill Dil' will release on November 14.

T

he audience may not care, but there is such a thing as perfect casting. And when Govind Nihalani cast Sadashiv Amrapurkar as Rama Shetty in Ardha Satya, he found the right man for the job. He looked like the South Indian gangster he played, even though he did not bother to lose his Marathi accent. In fact, he never got rid of it, and still had a reasonably long innings. (His accent got commented upon regularly, but it didn’t seem to bother him enough to do anything about it.) If an actor—who is not the leading man— gets one seminal role in his career, he should count himself lucky. Amrapurkar got two— Maharani in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sadak, the eunuch brothel ‘madam’—without scruples or mercy. He couldn’t have known it then, but there would be other actors playing eunuchs in films in the future, who would work with the template Maharani created (all except Paresh Rawal in Tamanna.) Just like any character playing an ‘Anna’ kind of gangster had shades of Rama Shetty. He did over 300 films in his career, but it is these two that will always come to mind

Sadashiv Amrapurkar in the movie Ardh Satya.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot

when his name comes up. Character actors seldom get such memorable roles—they play generic villains or comedians, fathers, uncles, servants, henchmen, which are more or less interchangeable. Only the most devoted or attentive move buff would remember who played the hero or heroine’s father, brother of buddy in which film. A supporting actor could, for instance, be typecast as a cop (like Iftekhar was), or sad sack father (Nasir Hussain, Man-

Kat visits ailing Rishi Kapoor

mohan Krishna), a typical Mausi (Leela Mishra) or school master (A.K. Hangal). In some old films, you could see the same actor playing a temple pujari in every third film, or a judge, or police constable, or Ramu Kaka. There were no casting agents then, so an actor could probably have a comfortable career playing the same character, because nobody had the inclination to look for another actor for the part. Maybe it was reassuring for the audience too—if they saw an actor playing a pandit in one film and a goonda in another, they could probably be disconcerted. The industry and media spotlight is always on the young hero or heroine, everyone else has to fight to be noticed. If one looked at Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s vast filmography, one might be hard pressed to recall just who he played in what film and whether it was a part that only he could have done. But he escaped oblivion by playing two unforgettable characters, and got his name into the roster of greats—no small achievement. Sadashiv Amrapurkar, RIP.

E

ven though Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor have always denied their relationship, but recent events that took place suggest a different story. If rumours are to be believed then Kat paid a visit to an ailing Rishi Kapoor her alleged beau’s father. Ranbir and Kat who finished their Thailand schedule of ‘Jagga Jasoos’ returned to Mumbai on yesterday and drove straight to the Kapoor residence, Krishna Raj, in suburban Mumbai. The veteran actor was diagnosed with dengue and subsequently hospitalised. While he was discharged and is at home currently, we hear that the to- be Kapoor bahu is keeping a close watch on Rishi’s health. ‘Jagga Jasoos’ directed by Anurag Basu will hit the theatres on August 28, 2015.

Bips urges fans to help street kids B

ong bombshell Bipasha Basu is presently holidaying in Thailand with her friend, fitness expert Deanne Pandey and though she is unwinding there and having a gala time that’s not stopping her from helping street kids. Bips recently spotted a cute little toddler on the road, in Bangkok, and offered her some food and posted a picture of the baby on instagram, writing, ‘’Met another adorable angel last night :) So heartbreaking to see lil babies on the street. Doing my bit. Help children.’’ A compassionate Basu also used to spend time with a young girl, who sells garlands in Chaweng Street, while she was in Koh Samui. Bipasha had also posted a picture of the garland girl along with Deanne a few days ago, writing, ‘’Lil baby girl Lida stole my heart! Meet her everyday on chaweng street selling these lil garlands! Will miss her when I leave Kohsamui!’’

Sonam Kapoor replaces Rekha? W

hile we all know Sonam Kapoor took over the reins from Rekha to play her character in ‘Khoobsurat’ remake, the former is set to replace the veteran actress in yet another project. Rekha who was the face for an international chocolate brand, will now be replaced by the ‘Aisha’ actress. It was the first ever commercial for the veteran actress but the brand felt they needed a younger face and roped in Sonam. Sonam has also replaced Urmila Matondkar who used to feature in commercials of the chocolate brand also.

of the film- Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan just can’t get enough of their selfies. The actors recently shot in front of the Jama Masjid, in the National Capital and there they took a lot of selfies and also included Kabir in a few of them. While Salman was spotted in a blue kurta, Kareena was seen in a colourful salwar kameez. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and is slated to release on Eid 2015.

Parineeti finds kissing onscreen very mechanical 2

014 seems like a romantic year for Parineeti Chopra. The 26-year-old actress starred in two romantic films ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ and ‘Daawat-E-Ishq’. However her chemistry with Ranveer Singh in ‘Kill Dil’ is sizzling and will set the screen on fire. The ‘Ishaqzaade’ girl has shot for multiple intimate scenes with co –star Ranveer

and will also share a liplock with him. Knowing the kind of controversies onscreen lip-locks create, Parineeti says that such scenes are simply mechanical and she does not have any limitations as an actress. After Shaad Ali’s ‘Kill Dil’, the bubbly girl has also signed a film opposite Saif Ali Khan.

Unceremonious sacking as captain was humiliating: Tendulkar

S

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar during the launch of his book on Wednesday. Tendulkar in his book speaks about the declaration by Dravid leaving him reeling at 194 not out at Multan, a decision which left him shocked.

N

EW DELHI: Stranded on 194 when stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid declared the Indian innings in the 2004 Multan Test, Sachin Tendulkar has spoken about the anger and shock he felt by the decision which "did not make any sense". In his autobiography 'Playing It My Way', Tendulkar reveals how hurt he was at the declaration and he told Dravid to "leave him alone" so that he could come to terms with his disappointment of missing out on a double century. "I assured Rahul that the incident would have no bearing on my involvement on the field, but off the field, I would prefer to be left alone for a while to come to terms with what had happened," Tendulkar writes in the book. However, the batting legend said that the incident didn't have any adverse effect on his relationship with Dravid. "Despite this incident, I am glad to say Rahul and I remained good friends and even on the field, our camaraderie remained intact until the end of our careers. We continued to have some good partnerships and neither our cricket nor our friendship was affected." In the book, published by Hachette India, Tendulkar has narrated the entire story of the Multan declaration and what happened behind the scenes

Disappointed and upset, I made my way back to the dressing room and could sense that the whole team was surprised at the decision (Rahul Dravid declaring with me stranded at 194). Some of my team-mates perhaps expected me to throw my gear about in the dressing room in disgust and create a scene. However, such things are not in me and I decided not to say a word to anyone about the incident.

SACHIN TENDULKAR ON THE MULTAN DECLARATION

after he was back in the dressing room. Tendulkar writes, "At teatime, I asked stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid, who was in charge because Sourav was out with a back injury, and coach John Wright what the plan was. I was informed, we were looking to give Pakistan an hour to bat, so would put them in with 15 overs left on the second day. It was perfectly sensible and I went about my business after tea with this plan in mind." Tendulkar said that he paced his innings in a manner that he could reach double century in time to give Pakistan 15 overs to bat as per plan. "But then, a little more than half an hour into the post-tea session, Ramesh Powar, who was substituting in the game came on the field and asked me to accelerate. I even joked with him, saying I

Kapil as coach disappointed Tendulkar

One of the finest Indian all-rounders of all time, Kapil Dev was a "disappointment" when it came to coaching, reveals batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar in his just-released autobiography 'Playing It My Way'. Tendulkar has claimed that he was left disappointed by Kapil during one of the Australia tours since the coach never involved himself in strategic discussions. In the chapter -- Tumultuous Times: India in Australia, November 1999–January 2000 -- Tendulkar has written that he had high expectations from Kapil. "During my second stint as captain, we had Kapil Dev as our coach. He is one of the finest cricketers to have played for India and one of the best all-rounders of all time, and I had great expectations of him in Australia.

was aware that we needed quick runs but with the field totally spread out, there was only so much we could do", he writes. "A little later, when I was on 194, he came out again and said I should try and get my double hundred in that over itself because Rahul had decided to declare. I was startled to say the least, because in my mind I still had 12 balls in which to score the remaining six runs before 15 overs were left for the day", Tendulkar writes. But as it happened, Tendulkar did not get to play a single ball in that over. "...As it happened, I did not get to play a single ball in that over with Yuvraj on strike against Imran Farhat. He blocked the first two balls before picking up two runs off the third ball. He once again blocked the fourth ball and was out to the fifth ball. "Then just as Parthiv Patel, the next batsman started to come out, I saw Rahul gesturing us to go back to the pavilion. He had declared the innings with me stranded on 194 and with 16 overs left for the day -- one more than we had agreed. Tendulkar admitted that he was indeed "shocked" at Dravid's decision. "I was shocked as it did not make any sense. It was Day 2 of the Test match and not Day 4, as it had been in Sydney, a month earlier."

haring his anger and pain after being stripped of the captaincy in 1997, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that the "unceremonious" sacking was very "embarrassing" and "humiliating". Writing in his autobiography 'Playing It My Way', published by Hachette India, Tendulkar recalled the drawn three-match series against Sri Lanka, which preceded his sacking. "At the end of the series, I was unceremoniously sacked as skipper. No one from the BCCI managed to call me or inform me of my removal as captain before someone from the media called to say I was no longer captain,"

Tendulkar has written. Tendulkar, 41, said the being removed from the position made him more determined to play better cricket. "I was actually with my friends in Sahitya Sahawas. I felt extremely humiliated to hear this, but the manner in which the whole thing was handled strengthened my resolve to be a better cricketer in the years to come. I told myself that the BCCI mandarins might be able to take the captaincy away from me, but no one could do the same as far as my own cricket was concerned," he wrote. Even as he vowed to do better, Tendulkar said the "sense of ignominy and the pain were still there".

Messi equals record, Barcelona lead quartet into last 16 P

ARIS: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Porto all qualified for the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday with Lionel Messi setting another personal milestone. Messi scored both goals -one with a header for only the fourth time in the competition -- as Barca beat Ajax 2-0 to equal Raul's record of 71 goals in the tournament. "I am happy for Leo because of the work he does for the team. He is the number one, the best," said Barca midfielder Xavi Hernandez. Bayern went through after a 2-0 victory at home to Roma, PSG saw off APOEL 10 while Porto beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 with their goalscorers Colombian Jackson Martinez and Algerian

Yacine Brahimi both taking their tallies to four in this season's competition. Champions Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund made sure of their last-16 places on Tuesday. However, Chelsea missed a chance to also reach the knockout stages as they had to come from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw with minnows Maribor in Slovenia. The 2012 winners, though, are in a far better state than English champions Manchester City whose mystifying failure to perform well in the competition continued as they had two men sent off in an embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to Russian outfit CSKA Moscow, who recorded their first ever win in England.

HMEDABAD: Ambati Rayudu slammed his maiden hundred as India produced yet another comprehensive batting performance to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second One Day International. India now lead five-match series 2-0. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 274 for eight in stipulated 50 overs with skipper Angelo Mathews scoring 92. In reply, India never looked in any sort of trouble as they chased down the target with minimum fuss in only 44.3 overs. With Virat Kohli promoting him at No 3, the 29-year-old Rayudu justified his skipper's faith scoring an unbeaten 121 off 118 balls with the help of 10 fours and four sixes in an innings that was paced perfectly. He shared two fruitful partnerships off 122 runs for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (79) and 116 for the third wicket with Kohli (49) as 'Men In Blue' again made the inexperienced Sri Lankan bowling attack look pedestrian. Fittingly enough, it was Rayudu, who finished the match with an inside out boundary off leggie Seekkuge Prasanna. With this century, 29-year-old Rayudu became the fourth oldest Indian batsman to score his maiden ton in ODIs after Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and Robin Singh. Growing in confidence after reaching his half century, Rayudu lofted Dhammika Prasad for his third six when in the 80s, then confidently smote off spinner Suraj Randiv for another maximum in his 90s before reaching the coveted landmark with a single to square leg.
