n what amounts to a massive achievement, the Vile Parle Police arrested Mumbai's biggest chain snatcher, Jafar Deshmukh alias 'Chikna” who had a whole lot of cases registered against him in various police stations in Mumbai. Following his arrest, the Vile Parle police recovered
lakhs of gold from the possession of a certain jeweller to whom he used to regularly sell gold following his chain snatching activities. It is a well-established fact that Jafar was operating his gang from long back, but as yet no one including the police had a 'fix' on how many youths were working in his gang. Not just this, 'Chikna' had good contacts in police
circles too, and often played a vital role in releasing snatchers from his gang after they were caught by the cops. The big fish 'Chikna' was trapped only after two of his gang members, Nelson and Iran were caught red-handed in Vile Parle last month while they were doing their chainsnatching activities. ‘Guru’ tops business buzzwords INDIAN-origin term 'Guru' has retained its place among the top50 business buzzwords globally,
while the term 'content' topped the list for the second consecutive year, according to a latest survey.
Guru, a Sanskrit-origin term which means teacher or master, has moved down to 15th position in 2014 from the 6th slot a year ago on the latest annual list for top business buzzwords compiled by Global Language Monitor (GLM).
US woman dies at 116, had title for 5 days A 116-year-old American woman, who became the world's oldest person last week, has died after suffering complications from pneumonia. Gertrude Weaver from Arkansas became next in line to officially earn the title of oldest person when 117-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan died on Wednesday. Weaver fell sick on Saturday and died on Monday at Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Centre. She is survived by her son, Joe Weaver, who turned 94 yesterday. Weaver was fully aware of her unique place in the world and "knew everything", Washington Post quoted Kathy Langley, administrator at the rehabilitation centre, as saying. "She was alert and oriented," Langley said. "She knew that she was the oldest person in the world, and she enjoyed that distinction greatly. She enjoyed every phone

call, every letter, every comment — everything was read to her." Born in 1898 as the youngest of six children in southwest Arkansas, Weaver was the daughter of sharecroppers. She once told a newspaper that
her longevity was due to "treating everybody good" and eating her own cooking. Weaver married Gennie Weaver in 1915, and their marriage certificate was used by researchers in July to help verify her age, according to the Gerontology Research Group, which validates ages of the world's longest-living people. At age 104, she briefly entered a nursing home to recover from a broken hip, but she soon left the home and continued living with her granddaughter until the age of 109. Figuring out the world’s oldest person is not an easy task, and the title goes to an individual whose age can be verified by some sort of documentation who typically applies for the recognition. The world's oldest known person is now Jeralean Talley, who was born on May 23, 1899 and will turn 116 next month, according to the group.
After 'content', which topped the chart for 2014, the most popular used words by the business world were -- 'net-net', 'big data', 'at-theend-of-the-day' and 'social media'. Other words named in the chart were: 'offline' (6th), 'face time' (7th), 'ping' (8th), 'rock-and-a-hardplace' (9th), 'win-win' (10th). GLM's 'Business Buzzwords of the Year' rankings are based upon actual word usage throughout the English-speaking world, which now numbers more than 1.83 billion people. Guru was followed by 'repurpose', 'robust', 'value-add', 'transparency' and 'seamless', as among the top 20 business buzzwords for 2014. To qualify for these lists, the words, names, and phrases must be found globally, and have a minimum of 25,000 citations.
Soon, your car may run on hydrogen produced from corn RESEARCHERS have discovered a new way to produce hydrogen fuel using abundantly available corn stover -- the stalks, cobs, and husks. The findings could help speed the widespread arrival of hydrogen-powered vehicles in a way that is inexpensive and has extremely low carbon emissions, researchers said. "This means we have demonstrated the most important step toward a hydrogen economy -

producing distributed and affordable green hydrogen from local biomass resources," said Percival Zhang, a professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. The work builds upon previous studies Zhang's team has done with xylose, the most abundant simple plant pentose sugar, to produce hydrogen yields that previously were attainable only in theory. Unlike other hydrogen fuel production methods that rely on highly processed sugars, the new study used dirty biomass - the husks and stalks of corn plants - to create the fuel. This not only reduces the initial expense of creating the fuel, it enables the use of a fuel source readily available near the processing plants, making the creation of the fuel a local enterprise, researchers said. Joe Rollin, a former doctoral student of Zhang's at Virginia Tech and co-founder with Zhang of the start-up company Cell-free Bioinnovations, used a genetic algorithm along with a series of complex mathematical expressions to analyse each step of the enzymatic process that breaks down corn stover into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. He also confirmed the ability of this system to use both sugars, glucose and xylose at the same time, which increases the rate at which the hydrogen is released.

Sources disclosed that the Sena dissent to the government move has got to do more with the April 11 assembly byelection to Bandra East constituency which has a sizable population of minorities. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) too has yesterday slammed the government decision terming it as communal. The Congress also has argued that the decision on banning cow slaughter has affected the minority community engaged in the business.
The MLA has objected to the BJP's poll pact with Shiv Sena for Navi Mumbai civic polls By Prashant Hamine
S
enior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member in the legislative assembly Manda Mhatre expressed her unhappiness over her party's electoral alliance with the Shiv Sena for the Navi Mumbai municipal corporation elections. Speaking to news persons her,e she remarked that had the alliance not taken place the BJP could have been able to unfurl its flag atop the civic body. It may be recalled that Mhatre had vehemently opposed the party's moves to rope in Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ganesh Naik into the party fold. Mhatre had defeated Naik in the October 2014 assembly elections. The senior BJP member has for long been arguing that the party stood a good chance to wrest power in the civic body from the NCP given the strong anti-incumbency factor against the Naik family. Mhatre stated that although the party is happy over getting 43 seats in the seat sharing agreement with the Sena, most of the wards where the BJP is
Drug cop Kalokhe sent to judicial custody By Diwakar Sharma
A
sessions court onWednesday sent Mumbai police constable Dharamraj Kalokhe, accused of possessing huge quantity of mephedrone or meow-meow drug, to judicial custody till April 21 despite investigation officer pressed to extend his custody. Kalokhe, who was in police remand since March 24, has reportedly named few small fries in the high profile mephedrone drug seizure
Lawyer of accused says that his client is just being made a scapegoat, hopes names of 'big fish' in the racket will be revealed case that rocked Mumbai Police last month. Defence counsel Naveen Chomal has been reiterating that his client Kalokhe has been made a scapegoat in the case, underscoring the involvement of some high profile police and customs officials in this drug racket case cannot be ruled out.
“My client Kalokhe informed us that he has named several police personnel, but Marine Drive Police are roping in only small fries like - one police constable attached to Property Cell, another constable and one suspended PI from Igatpuri, Nashik,” said Chomal, who hopes that Kalokhe would name the king-
pins as he is now free from police pressure. Kalokhe was nabbed by Satara police for illegal possession of 110 kg of mephedrone, also known as M-Cat drug on March 9. Next day cops recovered 12 kg of mephedrone from his official cupboard at Marine Drive police station, where Kalokhe was posted.

Manda Mhatre strong have been given to the Sena to contest. An interesting contest is unfolding in the Navi Mumbai municipal corporation elections with Ganesh Naik's nephew Vaibhav Naik's wife Vaishnavi Naik (BJP) contesting the civic election from ward number 51 against her own sister Vaishali Mhatre who is contesting the election on a NCP ticket. Meanwhile, in Aurangabad municipal corporation election the Sena is facing rebellion with its sitting Mayor Kala Ojha filling nomination papers against party's official nominee Raju Vaidya after having been denied the party ticket.

t’s always frustrating when a person mysteriously disappears and no one ever finds out what happened to them, the fresh incident has came into light from Malwani where four persons including two minor girls disappeared in which two are brother-sister. Shockingly, two minor girls and minor boys were found missing on Saturday last week after they left their homes for school, and on the same day, a 22-year-old autorickshaw driver's family members registered missing complaint of a son at the Malwani Police station. According to police station
sources, a 15-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister and their neighbour 15-year-old girl disappeared the same day and at the same time. When they did not returnfrom schoo,l their family members registered a kidnapping case at the police station, but in-between a auto driver family members also landed up and they informed their son is also missing on the same day. After complaints were registered, the Malwani police formed a special team to track down the youths, police suspect that, the two girls and two youths are missing from a particular day, so it may be a possibility that they have eloped.
Interestingly, the auto driver and and a 14-year-old girl was in constant touch with each other, but police did have any clue about the minor boy and a girl. Senior Police Inspector from Malwani Police station, Prakash Patil said, “We did not want to take any chance in this case, already we have formed a team in this case and we are working as per their mobile phone locations. Primary investigation seems that brother-sister and their neighbour girl knew this auto driver, and it is suspected that they are on the run. We have registered a missing complaint, while further investigations is on,” Patil added.

Congress demands Mayor's resignation; Loud protests and chaos in the House
By Devashri BhujbalVelapure

n the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) House yesterday, Opposition leader and Congress corporator Devendra Amberkar made a statement demanding the mayor's resignation. This comes a week after an audio clip of the conversation between Mayor Snehal Ambekar and MNS corporator Sandip Deshpande was made public alleging that the mayor is involved in corruption. Amberkar alleged that the exposed audio clip which has got circulated on national and international level is very humiliating for the BMC and that every citizen of Mumbai has got to know as what and how compromises are made to take care of mutual financial interests while distributing development funds. Concluding his statement in the House, Amberkar said that the Mayor's behaviour is very humiliating and demanded that she should im-
Devendra Amberkar mediately resign from her post. Congress corporator Pravin Chheda said that due to the behavior of the Mayor, all citizens have started losing faith in their corporators. Another Congress corporator Vakarunnisa Ansari said in her speech that the issue about the allegations of the corruption by the Mayor should not be considered as a political issue but as a gender issue. She further said that if the allegations are proved
right, the mayor should resign from her post keeping intact her self-respect. The Shiv Sena and BJP did not accept the demand of the Congress and said all the allegations are baseless. BMC house leader and Shiv Sena corporator Trushna Vishwasrao said that the Congress itself totally into large-scale corruption scandals like Aadarsh, 3G etc. and that they are not in a position to point fingers at the Mayor. She also alleged that the Congress is only interested in creating chaos in the house and is not interested in the city’s development. The mayor in her speech later said that all the allegations against her are baseless and that she will answer all questions and provide required explanations whenever necessary. As the issue about the mayor's resignation heated up, Congress corporators did not cooperate in the normal proceedings of the house and total chaos reigned. They later boycotted the house.

n the second incident in as many days, another privately operated public transport bus of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, caught fire near the Judicial Academy in Uttan on Tuesday. Fortunately nobody was injured in the mishap as the driver apparently noticed smoke emanating from the engine and alerted the conductor and other passengers
to alight from the bus.The incident was reported at about 10 am when the bus was on its way to Manori from Bhayandar. The fire brigade personnel were informed, who rushed to the spot and doused the fire. It may be recalled that just two days back a Jogeshwari bound MBMT bus had caught fire in the Western Park area of Kashimira. Although the exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, local
residents have attributed lack of maintenance and blatant violation towards implementing standard safety measures as the reason for such incidents. It should be noted that the fleet of MBMT buses are run on a contractual basis by the Ulhasngar-based, Kestrel Infrastructure. Most of the buses are in a rickety condition posing a serious threat to the lives and limbs of commuters.

FIR lodged against Mayor for abruptly stopping audio of National Anthem Mayor writes letter to municipal commisioner, seeks inquiry By Devashri BhujbalVelapure
A
police complaint has been lodged against the Mayor Snehal Ambekar for abruptly stopping an audio of the National Anthem, yesterday. The audio was played by mistake by a person, who can't understand Marathi, on the audio board, when the corporators stood up to pay condolences to the great Indian folk artist Shahir Sable, who passed away last month. He thought that the House is getting adjourned. So the Mayor abruptly stopped him. Opposition leader and Congress corporator Devendra Amberkar speaking to
them was played by mistake by the audio man, the mayor should have allowed it to continue and abruptly stopping the National Anthem is a crime. Speaking to ADC, Trushna Vishwasrao asked as to how can the Congress protest about the incident when they themselves were not present in the house. They had already boycotted the house. She also added that it is very shameful that Congress corporators did not wait for the condolences that were given Shahir Sable. Mayor Snehal Ambekar Mayor Snehal Ambekar has written a letter to the municipal commissioner to ADC said, that even if the look into the issue and start audio of the National An- an inquiry.

Ban on slaughter of all animals? I
S the state government serious when it declares that a ban on the slaughter of all animals will soon be imposed. What is involved in this issue is not any matter of religious significance, but of cruelty to animals. If the ban on all animals slaughter is imposed, crores of people will probably die of hunger, across the country. If denied meat, they will have no chance of survival. To say the least, the government’s statement with regard to the ban on all animals is quite unacceptable. The question of cruelty to animals perhaps arises only if painful and prolonged methods are used to end its life. For instance, a pig groans painfully as blood flows out slowly out of a hole made in its neck. Later, the blood, is also consumed. If the animal is killed at one stroke, the poor creature will not have prolonged pain. If everyone is forced to give up meat, there might not be enough vegetables and other vegetarian food like rice, pulses etc. to go around. If the government imposes ban on the killing of animals like goat, pig and others, there is likely to be a nation-wide protest. The decision of the government to ban, cow, bull and buffalo slaughter has itself caused much resentment. People think that they have the right to eat what they want. They also declare that the cow slaughter was banned on the ground of religion. Those who are keen about stopping slaughter of animals must try to rein in their misplaced crusade against slaughter of all animals.

ARENDRA MODI will complete one year as prime minister next month. But evidently, he still feels like a fish out of water in Delhi’s power circles. On at least three occasions over the past four days, he has gone out of his way to mock and deride what he believes is the privileged Lutyens’ zone club of the English-speaking, westernized elite. He made a passing reference in a speech at the BJP’s national executive meeting in Bengaluru on Friday. On Sunday, he lashed out at 'five-star activists’ while speaking at a joint conference of chief ministers and chief justices. The next day, he taunted 'so-called angreziyat vale log’ during his address to state environment ministers. He said these people would laugh at him for the next 48 hours for suggesting traditional methods of environment protection and conservation. “Bada mazaak udayenge, aapko bhi bahut manoranjan milega TV par, kyonke ek alag soch ke log hain,’’ he exclaimed. (They will make fun and entertain you on TV because these are people with a different mindset.) His suggestions included harking back to something he said grandmothers in rural areas used to do. They would summon children on full moon nights, he recalled, and make them thread needles to experience the moon’s radiance on that auspicious occasion. Modi proposed turning this into an urban community festival to save energy by switching off street lights on full moon nights and collecting children and grandmothers for a neighbourhood needle threading event. Modi would be entirely justified in flaunting the chip on his shoulder if his ideas were to be dismissed as yet more bilge from the saffron stable and its abiding belief in the golden age of Hindu civilization, which it boasts was home to the world’s first nucleartipped missiles, the first head transplant, the first experiment in genetic engineering and so on. As it turns out, the 'angreziyat vale log' did not rise to his bait and simply ignored his taunt. Similarly, the same 'five-star activists’ he taunted for influencing the judiciary are the very same ones who paved the way for Modi’s rise by exposing the UPA’s multiple scams. Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan, for instance, was the moving force behind the public interest litigations that uncovered the 2G scandal, the coal scam and the Radia tapes. No-one complained then about 'five-star activists'. So has Modi misread the Delhi elite? It is
surprising that even after defying all predictions to win a handsome electoral majority, he has not shed the hostility and suspicion that marked his relationship with Delhi through his years as Gujarat chief minister. He connected with a disillusioned electorate by presenting himself as an outsider to the corrupt deracinated ruling class that has bled Delhi dry. But after nearly a year supposedly dismantling the structures on which these parasites thrived, Modi, by his own confession, is still very much the outsider. Harping on the 'us versus them’ divide may

The ‘I’ or ego in you is a tiny atom F you are unhappy, check if any of these are lacking: tapas, or penance; vairagya, or dispassion; sharanagati, or surrender. Tapas is agreeing with the moment, a total acceptance of pleasant or unpleasant situations. Vairagya means “I want nothing” and “I am nothing.” Sharanagati is “I am here for you, for your joy.” If you are grumbling, it is because these are lacking in your life. When you accept your situation you cannot grumble; when you take it as tapas you will not grumble. When you come from a state of dispassion — “I do not want anything” — you do not grumble; and if you are surrendered you will have no complaints. If you do not do it willingly, you will do it later out of desperation. First you will say, “Nothing can be done.” Then in anger you will say, “I give up, I want nothing, I have no choice!” All three of these — penance, dispassion and surrender — purify your mind and uplift you in joy. — Marseilles, France, May 28, 1997

A few days later, he was in Indore addressing a gathering of the Jain community. And then he was off to Cooch Behar in West Bengal for a survey of the enclaves along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Whew! That’s a lot of traveling. Similarly, Sushma too is on the move. According to journalists who know her movements, she has visited 19 countries already in the ten months that she has been foreign minister. And contrary to the popular perception that it is Modi who spends more time out of the country than his foreign minister, Sushma has spent some 50 days outside compared to Modi’s 37 days.

HE ‘I’ or ego in you is a tiny atom. If this atom is associated with the body, with matter, it identifies with matter. If this atom is associated with the being, the infinite, it identifies with the infinite Self. When this atom, this ego, identifies with the material world, it becomes miserable. But when it is associated with the spirit, it becomes Divine. It becomes shakti — energy — when it is associated with the being, the Self. It becomes miserable when identified with the body. In a huge atomic reactor, it is just one atom that is exploded. In the same way, in our whole body there is just one atom of “I.” And when this “I” explodes, it becomes the light of the Self. Usually we say “I am miserable,” or “I am happy.” Shift this atom of ego from identifying with the body and the conceptual world, to identifying with the real world. — Montreal Ashram, Quebec, Canada July 30, 1998 SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR

Is India secular ?
THIS refers to ‘Ban slaughter of all animals (ADC, April 7). India is a democratic country. Our constitution boasts of a salient feature called ‘secularism’. Therefore the government and the judiciary need to remain secular in its respective roles. Beef has better nutrition than chicken and mutton in terms of amino acids, fats and protein. It is the cheapest of all the meat available in the market and therefore beef ban is removing one’s affordable nutritional source from the food chain. Besides proteins, beef is also rich in linoleic and palmiotelic acids, which have strong anti-cancer effects and fights viruses and other pathogens that are present in the body. The ban is a direct infringement on an individual's personal freedom. It will also result in numerous people losing their jobs, while the businesses of many will suffer State’s ban on beef is undemocratic. and eventually close down. Dr. Ambedkar
Appeasement of Dalits APROPOS your article "Deck's cleared for Dr. Ambedkar memorial at Indu Mill" (ADC Apr 6), it is fortunate for our politicians that a majority of their constituents are gullible enough to be taken in by grand promises and superficial gestures. The elaborate Ambedkar memorial sanctioned at Indu Mills is nothing but a blatant attempt to garner Dalit votes in the forthcoming municipal elections. The BJP will take primary credit for this, but you can be sure the other political parties will jump on the bandwagon. It is immaterial to the politicians that this structure will have only symbolic significance and will do nothing to alleviate the miserable living conditions and offensive caste discrimination faced by so many Dalits. Indeed, the hundreds of crores spent on this inanimate structure could be more usefully employed in providing better facilities for the Dalits, but then that doesn't make headlines nor offers any publicity to the political parties: so why bother?
aspect he has brought out is that age old cases carried on for more than two decades need to be withdrawn. In fact this cumbersome procedure especially for car accidents, rape, molestation cases need to be stream-lined so that these could be resolved and decision taken at the earliest to punish the culprits, as otherwise the delay in justice erodes the sanctity of the cases like the Nirbhaya rape case, Salman Khan's hit & run case & so many countless others losing their significance & thereby the culprit would be allowed to live without any punishment which he actually deserves. Each case should be time bound so that the judiciary would be having the onus to declare the verdict on time to carry on with the conviction. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

Crude politicians THE crude racism inherent in Giriraj Singh's diatribe against Sonia Gandhi could have been dismissed as yet another bizarre comment from BJP fringes if he wasn't also a minister in the Modi government. When the video of him saying that Congress would never have accepted Rajiv Gandhi's wife as leader if she had been a `Nigerian' woman instead of a `fair-skinned' one became public, he initially defended the comments as being made `off the record' and then offered his regrets to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi if they were hurt. BJP president Amit Shah has also made it clear that the first-time Bihar MP's comments are unacceptable. Yet, this may not be enough to contain the damage. Even as Congress and other political parties engage in a high-decibel war of words with BJP on the issue, Nigeria's appalled high commissioner has rightly asked for an apology. Besides being racist, the suggestion by a serving Indian minister that Nigerian women are in some way inferior to western or Indian women is extremely damaging to India's diplomatic interests. Rewarding honesty? THIS refers to your editorial 'Transfer of honest officer - 46 times'(dated April 7, ’15). Ashok Khemka who has been transferred for a record 46th time may have lost reasons for such transfers because at the back of each transfer is his honesty. Now Khattar Govt who made full use of him during elections to target Sonia and Congress because Khemka had exposed Vadra's links to DLF and his extra constitutional authority over Congress Govt to bend rules for him is again at receiving end from the current ruler. It's mindboggling that the BJP led Khattar Govt gave same reasons for his transfer as were given by Hooda Govt. Khattar has undone his Govt's image which is now seen as linked with corruption. Police sources also claimed that, Jafar is the biggest name in the chain-snatching circles, being the head of one of the biggest chainsnatchers gang. SPI Raksha Maharao of Vile Parle police when she learnt about Jafar asked her staff to pick him up from his residence in Wadala, and taking him into the custody she herself began investigation. In the course of the investigations, Jafar revealed that, whatever gold ornaments or
necklaces his gang members robbed, they passed on all the gold to him before he in turn sold it to a certain jeweller. SPI Raksha Maharao along with him went to the jeweller's shop and based on Jafar's confession she recovered gold worth more than quite a few lakhs from the possession of jeweller. But when SPI Raksha Maharao was quizzed about the total recovery of gold from jeweller, she said she is not authorized to speak to the media. DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni had all information related to this case, she revealed the fact that Jafar Deshmukh was arrested but did not reveal facts about the total recovery of gold valuables. When DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni was contacted, he admitted the accused was arrested but more information could be got from Zone 8 DCP Virendra Mishra who refused to take any call and also did not respond to a SMS.

3 youths arrested for sodomizing 7-yr-old boy and setting him on fire By Tariq Khan
T
he Bhiwandi City police arrested three youths on Sunday evening for allegedly sodomizing a 7-year-old boy from their locality, where they later tied him up and set him on fire, following an argument over a game of cricket. One of the masterminds, had been looking to get even with the boy’s family as he was previously berated by his father for trying to woo his daughter, and saw the fight over the game as a good opportunity. The boy sustained around 30 per cent burns and is currently recuperating at the Thane Civil Hospital. The incident took place in the Patma Nagar area on Saturday evening where the victim was playing cricket with his friends in the course of which a ball hit one of the trio, identified as Gangaram Limbadra Katta, Ganesh Dashrat Jadhav and Vishal Jitendra Malvankar. All the accused are 18 years of age and live in the same slum locality around Patma Nagar as the victim. The accused first verbally
abused the boy for not playing the game carefully when Jadhav suddenly hit upon the plan of teaching him a lesson. They then dragged him to a house in the slum nearby which was kept open by its owner as he was expecting prospective tenants. There, they forcefully undressed him and sodomized him one after the other. The boy was then bound with ropes on his hands and feet and kerosene was poured on himfollowing which he was set on fire. Unbeknownst to them, a 13-yearold boy from the locality had been keenly watching the entire event unfold and followed them to the house, but was alarmed when he saw smoke billowing. Locals gathered at the spot upon seeing the fire and the authorities were informed. The victim’s father works in a local powerloom factory while the accused do odd jobs for a living. “We arrested them on at 5:10 p.m. on Sunday and produced them in court on Tuesday. They have been remanded to police custody till April 9,” said Senior PI N.T.
Rode of the Bhiwandi City police station. The accused have been charged with kidnapping, wrongful confinement and attempt to murder of the IPC along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children of Sexual Offences Act (PCSOA).

« STUDYING ABROAD
A majority of the US schools offer need based financial aid, that is dependent on the applicant’s demonstrated financial need. The applicant’s academic performance is strongly considered while making a decision. Financial aid can be in the form of a grant, loan or an on-campus Job. The school treats such applications separate from regular applications. A few schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Amherst & Swarthmore offer need-blind aid which provides financial aid to students after admission into the program and is independent of the applicant’s financial need. A scholarship is different from financial aid and is purely merit based. The criteria includes High School GPA, Course Rigor, Class Rank and SAT/ACT scores. There is no exam for scholarships or financial aid, however you might need to submit an additional essay. Colleges in the UK do not offer international students any financial aid.
I am studying in class X and plan to graduate in commerce and economics abroad. Which is the best country to pursue this course? —Dipanshu
After you finish with your Grade X examinations, enroll in a commerce program for your 11th and 12th. If you do intend to apply abroad, you will need to begin preparation in the 11th grade. For an undergraduate degree in the United States, you will need your SAT or ACT, which are standardized tests. All your transcripts (from 9th-12th) will need to be sent to the colleges of your choice along with recommendation letters from teachers and counselors. An Economics degree falls under the Liberal Arts spectrum. You have the option of choosing from over 300 subjects, giving you a more holistic education. You do not need to declare your major of choice until your second year of college. If you choose to apply to a college in the UK, you will need to submit your 10th and 12th
transcripts and specify your major in the application. The flexibility is limited and once you choose your interest, you will have to stick with that major. Note that you can only apply to 5 colleges in the UK, whereas your choice is unlimited for colleges in the United States.

‘Interior Designers need to be equipped as Architects’

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2015
There is a need to generate awareness about the need of Sustainable Design for newcomers entering the field of Architecture and Interior Design, so that they are able to relate the role of sustainability as a functional tool along with suggesting aesthetical design solutions
By Digant Sharma, Academic Dean, AD The Design School (ADTDS)
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Sustainable design creates solutions that solve the economic, social, and environmental challenges of the project simultaneously, and these solutions are powered by sustainable energies. The combined beauty and function of the design make it something that endures and is cherished; endurance and beauty are central to sustainable thinking. How projects are designed and, more importantly, how the design program is defined, is central to sustainable design and planning. If a project does not include energy efficiency as a program requirement, there is little chance that the project will fulfill that requirement. More importantly, if sustainable design is the foundation of the program requirement, then energy, form, construction processes, materials, native place, and long life are integral to the design solution. Since design is a process,
changing the process will change the product significantly. All design can be sustainable, but the change in the design process must include a change in the designers’ education. Designers’ expanded ability to solve problems must be grounded in ecological principles, earth sciences, and physics—all of which are sustainable models. Typically, sustainability is illustrated as three intersecting circles connecting community, economy, and the environment. But the overwhelming majority of problems, issues, and corresponding solutions are, like ecology, three-dimensional. As three dimensional problem solvers, architects are well suited to lead the change toward sustainability. That architects are three-dimensional problem solvers is central to the resolution of non-linear, spatial problems. Most professions do not work this way, and most people do not think spatially. The three spheres of sustainability, much like the three elements in Vitruvius’ Principles—firmness, commodity, and delight—must be solved simultaneously, and spatial thinkers are best at doing that.
this change happen.

I chose my career because I was already a fashion designer managing my own boutique. I also had the training and experience of working with Hindustan Lever as a beauty consultant. So when Fashworld approached me to take up a job as an Image Consultant, I was happy to work with them as this was my passion. I like the fact that I can actually make a difference in the lives of people that I work with and help them to grow in their career and improve their relationships. My education in psychology helped me to understand people better. Fashion designing helped me to understand body types, colours, fabrics and style people accordingly. My courses in skin care and makeup have helped me to teach makeup to my clients according to their skin types, age and face shapes. Although it was very tedious because we had to complete the course in a short period of time, training days were very interesting and fun because there were students from all over the world. As an Image Consultant I guide people in presenting themselves to their best advantage and in expressing their highest potential. I teach individuals how to polish their image in three areas. Physical appearance - grooming, hair and skin care, dressing and styling; Behavior- social skills, etiquette, stress management and protocol; Communication skills-verbal and non verbal. I have made an investment of Rs.5 lakhs. As a fresher one can earn rupees 25,000 per month. It takes about a year to become a professional. One can earn anything between fifty thousand to one lakh as an established professional. The biggest advantage is that the timings are flexible so I can work according to my convenience. Although I have an office, I can work out of my home or as a freelancer. I get the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. However there are also some difficulties. Many people are still not aware of Image Consultancy and the
Since these spatial relationships are essential and connected parts of sustainable design, spatial thinkers are best equipped for the challenge, responsibility, and stewardship of multidimensional solutions. Sustainable architecture and design add to the quality of the environment, to clean air, to water, to renewing and protecting life—all by designing the connections to what is there. The place is better because of sustainable design. Green design is an element of sustainable design. Green buildings and communities that integrate the local climate and building resource create healthy interior spaces with natural light, and complete recycling and reuse of materials are critical to the development of a sustainable future. Green buildings that efficiently use grid based (nonrenewable) energy slow the energy and pollution crisis, but if the energy sources powering these buildings are unsustainable, the design is not sustainable. Sustainable design differs from green design in that it is additive and inclusive—it includes continuing, surviving, thriving, and adapting. Green design incorporates sufficient designs, and they need to evolve ecologically sensitive materials and creates rapidly. healthy buildings and processes that do not Design and designers are at a unique posi- negatively affect the environment before, durtion in history globally. Green design incorporates planners are not only agents of the change efficient mechanical systems and high-perfortoward sustainability but quite possibility the mance technologies but still functions primamost central and effective agents for making rily through the use of fossil fuels. Sustainable
design integrates the principles of green design and goes further to become a passive and active structure that is designed to maximize the use of sites’ natural renewable resources. When buildings are conceived as organisms instead of objects, they become part of the ecological neighborhood, and since they operate off existing site and regional renewable energies, they are sustainable. Sustainable design improves the quality of life while eliminating the need for nonrenewable energy. When a design solution incorporates sustainable energies to power that design’s functioning that, ‘work’ is done for free. Free work is what natural systems provide; it powers all ecology. Human ecology, though similar, is critically different. Although largely powered by sustainable processes that provide essential needs, human settlements rely on fossil fuel for food, comfort, transportation, air, water, and security. Designs powered by free sustainable energies require no fossil fuel and are capable of providing a healthier level of comfort and a higher quality of life. In achieving this connection with local free energies, sustainable design reduces or eliminates the daily consumption of nonrenewables, reduces project costs and maintenance costs and requirements, increases user approval and user productivity, and reduces the total embodied project energy. Sustainable design is green design powered by sustainable energies— functioning unplugged.
SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Although interior designers have been at the forefront of green materials and indoor air quality standards, the place-based aspects, specifically integrating sustainable energy and orientation, have been missing. Interior design traditionally has been design of the interior realm of an existing space within a building or of a building under construction. As in architectural design, the opportunity to connect to sustainable energies has not been addressed. With little or no regard to the orientation and location of the functions within the space, the relationship to other spaces within the same building, or the impacts from neighboring buildings, the opportunity for the space to function sustainably is lost. An important opportunity lies in analyzing the space and functional components as they relate to the solar and exterior conditions and available sustainable resources (e.g., light, heat, and ventilation). Orientation of the functional design layout to solar and exterior-based elements (e.g., reflectance off other buildings, view corridors, prevailing breezes, solar-heat gain, and day lighting) can have positive impacts on user performance and well-being while reducing or eliminating use of non renewable. As in sustainable architectural design, interior architecture that addresses the natural context of the project site has an opportunity to improve sustainability.

Corporate training programmes - professional grooming, business dressing, communication etiquette, team building, soft skills etc. Image consultancy is suddenly becoming a big business though it is an emerging field. According to Brian Tracy, author of the bestselling book The Psychology of Achievement, ‘Many capable men and women are disqualified from job opportunities because they simply do not look the part.’ Our impression about other people may be based on how they look, talk or behave. A person’s overall image may consist of a variety of factors including their clothing, grooming, tone of voice, vocabulary, facial expression, eye contact, gestures, and social behavior also known as etiquette. We make assumptions about people based on their appearance. Fortune magazine’s annual ranking of most admired companies has found a corelation between a company’s reputation and its profits. Not surprisingly, the most admired companies have higher financial returns than the least admired. Image matters because people often make assumptions based on limited information. For instance, someone may be perceived as confident because they have a firm handshake. They may be judged as capable, professional, successful or even wealthy because they are well dressed. The reverse is

also true. Your appearance strongly influences other people’s perception of your financial success, authority, trustworthiness, intelligence, suitability for hire or promotion. People and companies have realized the importance of projecting the right image. Both individuals and companies can experience tremendous benefits by improving their image. People have realized the importance of visual appeal and presenting themselves and their companies in an attractive package. Corporate houses know that their employees are the brand ambassadors who reflect the image of the company. Hence, soft skills and professional grooming have become an integral part of their training programmes. That is why Image Consultancy has become a big industry. There are many reasons why Image Consultancy is a fabulous career choice. Image consultants can coach people in various topics related to personality. People from all walks of life can avail the services of an Image Consultant. Image Consultants can cater to a wide range of clientele like home makers, students, job seekers, prospective brides/grooms, beauty pageant contestants, politicians, actors, sports persons and businessmen. Consultants are also hired to offer presentations, seminars, workshops, or training programmes on topics such as professional dressing, telephone etiquette for customer service staff, communication skills, and other business topics. College or government agencies can hire Image Consultants to teach job hunters on how to dress for interviews. My advice for those who want to take up my profession is - If you have an eye for style, if you are a good communicator and a people’s person with an emphatic attitude then you can become a successful Image Consultant. GETTING CLASSICAL By Sukanya Roy Choudhury
I
ndians today are highly influenced by western traditions and losing focus on their own culture and traditions. Living a fast paced life, there are many changes adopted by the younger generation which will further change in the coming generation. However, there are many who still find bliss in the ancient Indian tradition, art and culture. One of them is the classical dance form of Kathak. Parents today do have a keen interest in teaching their children various forms of Indian classical dancing. Kathak is one of the ancient forms of dancing. It was performed by both men and women in temples and royal courts during the Mughal times. This dance form originated from North India. This form has many compositions that consist of only footwork. Kathak dance in other words is a dance which recites a story that may be based on Lord Ram, Shiva, Krishna, Radha etc. There are three major schools or gharanas as they call it which are Lucknow, Jaipur and Banaras. The dance of kathak is supported by many musical instruments, mainly the tabla. The sound that a tabla creates helps in the ‘bol’ which are the rhythmic words that one recites during the performance. A sitar and a tabla player provides the overall music. The dancer’s costumes today have changed from sari to lehenga choli, churidar
kameez or anarkali. The male costume however is a dhoti or kurta churidar. The costume is completed by wearing ghunghroos which are tiny bells attached to a string that are tied around the leg just above the ankle. The ghunghroos create a specific sound that is based on your footwork. The number of bells tied to the string depends on the age of the person. Children need to wear ghunghroos which have 25 – 50 bells whereas for adults it ranges from 75 to 120 or even 150. Today there are various institutions all over the country teaching this dance form to students from 5 years onwards. In Mumbai itself there are many trained teachers who teach children as well as adults. Indeed many adults, who have the interest to learn, seek the guidance of such masters. With the number of institutions and teachers increasing, there sure is a competition in the market. The duration of learning Kathak is of 6 – 7 years approximately. However, this varies on the level of sincerity, interest, passion and dedication one shows. Children can be enrolled at the age of 5 years. But for examination, the minimum age is 15 years. There are various institutions that teach kathak on a certified level such as Nalanda University, Mumbai University, Akhil Bhartiya Gandharav Maha Vidhyalaya and many more. During the examination, one recites the bols and the taals, sings and per-
forms. There are a total of 9 levels. For an adult, the examination can start directly from level 3. Level 4 onwards, one must also give a written exam in Hindi, English or a regional language. The final exam is the Visharad Poorna. Above Visharadh, is the Alankar Pratham and Alankar Poorna. These 2 levels are not mandatory. Each level has a syllabus that is improvised and changed every year or when required. These changes are given by the renowned institutions itself. As an added benefit, these institutions provide cultural quota that helps educational institutions in admissions or even for applying for a job in various government organisations. There are two ways to look at it from the career perspective. First, there are various cultural organisations today who provide dancers to perform in various locations all over India and abroad to promote Indian culture. It is also a delight for those who love and appreciate watching it. You do have an option of performing in various cultural shows without being associated with these groups. Second, is to conduct classes to teach. Your experience of dancing kathak for many years can bring in that extra money. You need a spacious room like a studio or a classroom, which can be given on rent or hire. Gradually with time and recognition, one can earn upto Rs.30,000 to Rs 50,000 a month. The amount varies with the number of
students and the fees taken. “I have been teaching for 5 years. I started with only 4 to 5 students. In the beginning it was difficult. It’s only through word of mouth publicity I have started to get more and more students. Also there are parents who wouldn’t want to pay me my fees even though it was a minimum amount of Rs.10,000. What we learnt as children was very different from how I teach children today. During our time, our Didi taught us only one or two dances which went on for several months so that we were perfect in it. Yes times have changed. There are many things that I have to consider, such as limitation of time. Children today have lesser and lesser time in hand to even practice at home. But they do have good grasping power to learn quickly. Even with adults I tend to look at perfection, clarity and dedication in order for me to move forward. I have come across teachers who teach a syllabus for two or three years when that can be completed earlier itself,” said Supriya Dholas who today has 55- 60 students. She has students from various communities and different age group. An individual who is passionate, has an interest, patience and experience is what you need to make this into a career. This can also be looked at to being a choreographer for weddings and shows in cultural programs in schools and colleges or even in Indian movies.

‘SKILLING INDIA’
Dharavi boy, Anthony Selva Nadar (19), is all set to represent India at World Skills 2015 in São Paulo, Brazil, where he’ll compete against young skilled professionals from around the globe. Naressa Coutinho delves into global skill development and its need in India, especially for talented young people like Anthony
B
ackpedal to a year and it’s only been a few months since Anthony Selva Nadar started training at Jetking, a Computer IT vocational training institute in Mumbai. All of 19 years and raised in the slums of Dharavi, Anthony is as drawn to the programmable world of computers as any kid his age. All too soon, he finds himself slapjacking through rigorous rounds of a competition that seeks to find a purist in IT Network Administration. Fast forward one year and he has emerged as a clear victor amongst 200 plus contenders from Jetking to represent India at World Skills 2015 in São Paulo, Brazil where he will compete against young professionals from all over the world in the month of August. The World Skills competition is considered to be the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world, held every two years to test technical abilities in specific tasks and fields and to promote socio-economic transformation through the promotion of vocational training. Winners selected from national level competitions held in member countries are all under the age of 25 years. In India, Jetking Infotrain Limited,
in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation(NSDC), launched the World Skills competition 2015 at Pragati Maidan in Delhi where Anthony won his seat in the international competition. This is an important part of skill development initiatives undertaken by the government as India progressively moves towards becoming a knowledgeable economy. The continuous shift to urbanization has its drawbacks in terms of the increasing gap between the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Thus, the ‘Skilling India’ movement is a national and concentrated effort to train and directly absorb skilled professionals into every sector of the economy; be it primary, secondary, or tertiary. It is an effective distribution of labor towards the overall productive capacity of the economy. Calling it his first national achievement, 19-year-old Anthony is all set to make his mark at this year’s World Skill event. “I feel confident and proud to be representing India,” he says “and I will definitely give it my best. My family is elated and I have their blessings.” Speaking about his preparation in this last year and the challenges he faced with each
level of the competition, he said, “Each round had a different set of questions and problems to solve on the spot by the students. You could never be prepared for what would be asked in that round. Often, I wouldn’t get the answer in the first go and with the clock ticking one has to think quickly.” While most people are often interested in the software aspect, Anthony’s interest lies in the hardware or the physical product. A major area of focus for the competition was ‘Network security and Managing servers’, something he wishes to pursue in depth in the future. Anthony has also been a champion chess player in his school and time with the chessboard is one of his favourite hobbies. How will World Skills benefit students like Anthony? In response to this, Mr. Siddarth Bharwani, Head of Brand and Marketing, Jetking Infotrain Ltd says, “World Skills provides unparalleled international exposure to students like Anthony where ideas and best practices from all over the world are exchanged. It is a platform to showcase your expertise on all levels and compete against arguably the best talents across the globe. Also, being internationally certified in a skill
provides young students like Anthony the boost they need to start off in their careers and to be successful for a life-time.” As part of the 12th Five Year Plan, the government of India has launched ‘Co-ordinated Action on Skill development’ through which it plans activities and programs across the country. In fact, in the previous year, the government allocated a sizeable amount of funding for skill development under the National Skill Development Fund (NSDF). Private institutions and companies like Jetking have collaborated with associations and the government to work towards a common vision for greater development of vocation skills. The government is also laying a large emphasis on entrepreneurship. This will automatically create jobs based on the
<< Siddarth Bharwani existing talent pool. A trained professional like Anthony now owns a skill which will get him a job of choice in the field he is trained. Skilling of this kind may even open windows for global placements. To be part of a major confluence of skill and talent is definitely an experience in itself for young Anthony and we hope he makes India proud.

TRAI recommends 112 as single emergency number
A single number '112' can be used for all emergency phone calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance, telecom regulator TRAI proposed on Tuesday. Similar to the '911' all-in-one emergency service in the US, government can integrate all existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 into the proposed '112' helpline number, TRAI said in its proposal on emergency number.
Arunachal's 12 dists declared ‘Disturbed’
All districts of Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam have been declared 'Disturbed Areas' under the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) as the government has found heightened militant activity there. Under the order, which will be in force for one year, security forces will have sweeping powers in all these 12 out of 19 districts of the state. The 12 districts include the highly sensitive Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts, where six bannedgroups like NDFB, NSCN and ULFA have their presence.
EW DELHI: Suspense continued on Tuesday over whether the issue of Rafale fighter deal, which has been stuck over cost, will figure in talks that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have with French President Francois Hollande during his visit beginning on Thursday. French Ambassador Francois Richier, while addressing a press conference here on Modi's visit, was evasive to questions over the multibillion dollar deal which has been held up for long, reports PTI. However, sources said "negotiations are on" for the deal under which French company Dassault Aviation will supply 126 Rafale fighter planes. Richier said French companies, including those in the field of defence, are keen to participate in the 'Make in India' programme and the fate of Rafale deal will be a key element in this. Rafale was selected by India from among five bidders in 2012 since it was the lowest bidder. Indian government officials say
that while the deal was initially for about Rs 42,000 crore, French are seeking a higher price now. This, the Indian officials say, has put the price at a "little more than double the cost". India is insisting that Dassault Aviation cannot renege on the Request for Proposal (RFP) clauses, which it had initially agreed to. Even at political level, India has categorically told the French side that it must stick to the RFP, in which Dassault was the lowest bidder and hence was selected for the contract. "The ball is in France's court," an Indian official had said sometime back. The French Rafale and European Eurofighter Typhoon were the only two left in the race for 126 fighter plane deal after years of tests on technical and other aspects. Another point of contention is the guarantee clause under which Rafale has to stand guarantee for the planes that would be manufactured by state-owned HAL.
Kejriwal seeks greater share of taxes Delhi gives to Centre N
EW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday pitched for a greater share for the national capital of the taxes it pays to the Centre and said the state government was not at loggerheards with the union government. He said it is not just that the Centre gives money for the development of the national capital but Delhi also gives Rs 65,000 crore in terms of taxes to the Centre and in return gets only Rs.325 crore. "There is a misconception that the Centre gives money for the development of Delhi. The Centre does not give (enough) money. Delhi contributes Rs 65,000 crore through the taxes collected by the Centre in the form of income and service taxes. But in return, Delhi gets only Rs 325 crore, which is wrong. "If the Centre gives us a greater share, we will contribute more and take this Rs 65,00 crore to Rs 80,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore. This will increase economic activity in the city, " Kejriwal said. The Delhi chief minister, who was speaking at a Confederation of In-
dian Industry (CII) event, also tried to downplay the tussle between the Centre and the state government. "We are not at loggerheards. We

PM Narendra Modi As per the RFP issued in 2007, the first 18 jets are to be imported and the rest 108 manufactured under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). According to the sources, Das-
sault was reluctant to stand guarantee for the 108 fighters to be built by HAL as far as liquidity damages and timelines for production were concerned. The Indian Defence Ministry is of the view that the guarantee clause was part of the Air Staff Qualitative Requirements (ASQR) under the RFP. Dassault had agreed to the ASQR and hence was selected for the deal, the sources maintained. "How can the ASQR be relaxed? This is not allowed under the Defence Procurement Procedure, 2013," the sources said. However, French authorities insist otherwise. Talking about the price and guarantee clause, the sources said all this takes place within the Indian Defence procurement procedure. "At the conclusion of the competition, the Rafale was selected – and its competitors eliminated – on the basis of technical/operational assessment and on the basis of price," they said.
20 red sanders ‘smugglers’ killed C
HITTOOR/CHENNAI: 20 people were on Tuesday gunned down in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district in a police operation said to be against Red Sanders smugglers that came under severe attack from the government and political parties in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, which claimed 12 victims were labourers from their state. Taking suo motu note of the incident, the National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Andhra Praderh government after one of its members observed that it involved "serious violation" of human rights of the individuals and the firing cannot be justified on the ground of self defence. Human rights activists and a former AP DGP also criticised the police action saying it was "disproportionate" to the crime. Police claimed that six of its personnel were also injured in an attack by the smugglers allegedly armed with sickles, axes and country-made weapons. They claimed that the task force and forest personnel, during a joint combing operation, spotted over 200 red sanders woodcutters
involved in felling trees and they were asked to surrender. "However, the smugglers, armed with sickles, axes, swords, countrymade weapons and stones, attacked the police and forest personnel injuring six policemen," Deputy Inspector General of Police (Special Task Force) M Kantha Rao told PTI. In retaliation, when the police fired in "self-defence", 20 of the smugglers were killed and many others fled the scene, he said. The Andhra police action elicited strong political reaction from parties in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister O P Panneerselvam wrote a strongly-worded letter to his counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu demanding a "credible and speedy" inquiry into the episode and responsibility fixed for possible human rights violations. Acknowledging that some of these people Thiruvannamalai and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu were engaged in illicit tree cutting, he said efforts could have been made to apprehend them than taking such a "drastic action".
After terror attacks, PDP-BJP tiff on AFSPA spill out J
AMMU: Differences between allies PDP and BJP over the issue of revocation of the controversial AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir came to the fore on Tuesday following Monday's three back-toback terror attacks in the Valley. The Army on its part said the matter was being discussed by the state government and the Centre. "Let them decide on it... We will do our job," General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps Lt General Subrata Saha told PTI in Srinagar. BJP members, carrying placards with "Big No to AFSPA removal" and "Pakistan Hai Hai" (down with Pakistan) stormed the well of the J and K Assembly as they demanded that a resolution condemning Pakistan "for sponsoring terrorism in
India" must be passed. "Pakistan is a terrorist state which has been sponsoring terrorism in India. The terrorist attacks that took place yesterday must act as an eye-opener for those who advocate the revocation of AFSPA," BJP member Ravinder Raina said. Later while speaking to reporters, Raina said, "The situation is not ripe for the revocation of AFSPA from any part of the state... Pakistan is continuously stabbing us in the back". The demand by the ruling coalition partner BJP not to revoke Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from the state came a day after Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said the state government would work towards a phased withdrawal of AFSPA.

nnouncing its first First Bimonthly Monetary Policy, the RBI yesterday kept key policy rates unchanged on fears of unseasonal rains impacting food prices, but nudged banks to lower lending rates while rejecting as "nonsense" their contention that cost of credit remains high. Promising an "accommodative monetary policy", RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan however indicated rate cuts going forward depending on favourable macro economic data, and whether banks pass on the benefits of two rate cuts so far this year. While industry expressed unhappiness over the status quo on rates, Rajan said market dynamics will force banks to lower their interest rates. "Comfortable liquidity conditions should enable banks to transmit the recent reductions in the policy rate into their lending rates, thereby improving financing conditions for the productive sectors of the economy," he said. The repo rate, at which the Reserve Bank of India lends to the banking system, will continue to be at 7.5% and the cash reserve ratio, which is the amount of deposits parked with the central bank, will remain at 4%. Bank rate has also
been retained at 8.5%. "We are not looking for a specific number (on the bank rate cuts) and saying unless this happens, nothing more will happen. But we want to facilitate the process of transmission. I do not see an environment where credit growth is tepid, banks are sitting on money and their marginal cost of funding (has) fallen, the notion that it hasn't fallen is nonsense, it has fallen," Rajan said after unveiling the first bi-monthly monetary policy for financial year 2015-16. Rajan expressed the hope that competitive pressure and comfortable liquidity position would encourage the banks to cut lending rates."Given that there has been very little transmission from rate cut so far...We are waiting to see transmission take place. I have no doubt that this will happen. If it happens sooner it is better for the economy," he told reporters. "The Reserve Bank will await the transmission by banks of its frontloaded rate reductions... Into their lending rates," said the policy statement. The RBI said that it would maintain accommodative stance of monetary policy going forward. Recent unseasonal rains and hailstorm have impacted rabi crops across North and Western India, raising fears of spike in food prices.
Retail inflation increased to 5.37% in February from the 5.19% for previous month, but many analysts expect it to continue to remain much below the RBI's January 2016 target of 6% range. Another factor which was supporting a rate cut included the range-bound core inflation, which is price rise without the food and oil components. Other factors like food prices will also be monitored closely, Rajan said, adding that the impact of the recent unseasonal rains will also be monitored closely. Incidentally, RBI surprised the markets with two rate cuts of 0.25% each outside the scheduled review meetings this year, but banks have yet to respond to these policy rate cut by lowering their lending rates. After the policy announcement bankers said that most of them will have their asset liability committee meeting week to take a call on interest rates which besides repo rate depends on factors like demand for credit, cost of fund and deposit rates. "We would see rates coming down as we see easing of interest rate cycle," SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said. Commenting on the RBI's action, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian said: "It is on the expected lines." Dr. Jyotsna Suri, President, FICCI said “FICCI was hoping for a con-
tinuation of the rate cut cycle by the RBI. However, the central bank decided to maintain a pause after having introduced a downward revision in the repo rate in quick succession on two occasions earlier this year”. “Of greater concern to industry is the fact that the transmission of the rate cuts introduced earlier by the RBI has not happened at the level of the banks. We are however happy to note that the RBI will encourage banks to move in a time bound manner to marginal cost of funds based determination of their base rate as this would improve the efficiency of the monetary policy transmission”, she added. "With the RBI choosing not to reduce the policy interest rate, demand revival in the economy and pick up in the investment cycle would remain a tall order," Assocham President Rana Kapoor said. The ball is clearly in the court of the banks to rise to the occasion since credit off-take has remained weak despite front loading of the two rate cuts, he added. PHD Chamber President Alok B Shriram said, "There must be transmission by the banks of the front loaded repo rate cut by RBI to the lending rates”. "Many stalled projects are waiting for availability of credit at cost
effective rates to restart the operations and eventually be a trigger for a turn in the investment cycle. These projects could be revived if RBI and banks had cut interest rates," CII President Ajay Shriram said. Engineering exporters' body EEPC India Chairman Anupam Shah said the RBI's decision to maintain interest rates "has been a dampener for the exporters". Says Hitesh Agrawal - Head Research, Reliance Securities "After two front-loaded rate actions, the RBI maintained the policy rate at 7.5%, which is in-line with our expectations. There was no change in CRR and SLR due to ample systemic liquidity. RBI has clearly stated that its next rate action would be determined largely by pace of transmission of the earlier two rate cuts on the lending rates. RBI is also concerned about resurgence of inflationary prices due to unseasonal rainfall”. Incidentally, the second bimonthly monetary policy statement will be announced on June 2, 2015; the third bi-monthly monetary policy statement on August 4, 2015; the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy statement on September 29, 2015; the fifth bi-monthly monetary policy statement on December 1, 2015; and the sixth bi-monthly monetary policy statement on February 2, 2016.

enture capital funding in the healthcare information technology (IT) sector across the globe dipped 35% to USD 784 million in the first quarter of 2015 from the preceding three months, says a report by global communications and consulting firm Mercom Capital Group. VC funding in the sector was USD 1.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2014. However, the number of deals grew to 142 during January-March 2015 from 134 deals in October-December 2014. With the latest quarterly figures for 2015, Health IT / Digital Health companies have now raised about USD 10 billion in VC funding since 2010. "Funding fell across the board with the exception of Mobile Health (mHealth), which was the bright spot this quarter. There was also significant M&A activity in the first quarter for mHealth companies," Mercom Capital Group CEO and Co-Founder Raj Prabhu said. "We have already seen 10 M&A transactions in Q1 compared to 21 in all of last year, which bodes well for exits in Mobile Health," Prabhu added. The top VC funding deal in Health IT sector for Q1 2015 was USD 70 million raised by US-based firm Health Catalyst. In India, Practo, a developer of a physician search engine closed USD 30 million (Rs 187 crore) in Series B funding from Sequoia
Capital and Matrix Partners, during the January-March quarter 2015. Other deals in the country included USD 300,000 (Rs 1.86 crore) raised by eKincare, an online and offline platform that enables monitoring critical medical information. Besides, Gympik.com, an online search engine that allows users to search and rate fitness facilities and professionals, raised USD 135,000 (Rs 86 lakh) in seed funding from Capvent's managing partners Tom Clausen and Rohan Ajila, as well as manufacturing firm Haldyn Glass. times, but for both of them it was the first time. On being asked wasn’t the weather hot, she says, "It was extremely hot, but it's okay, who cares when you have water all around. I used to chill in my shortest shorts. I used to be in the pool mostly. I just love everything about Goa. Like nobody cares what you're wearing, what you're doing. I also love riding those cute bikes". She further adds, "Short breaks are very important. After all you need time for your own self. You need your own space. You need days when you don't have to put makeup at all. And when you can be in your worst shorts and still nobody is bothered. Of course I am badly tanned. But who cares? I had a blast."

K
olkata: Keen to put the Sunil Narine controversy behind them, Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their title defence against a formidable Mumbai Indians side in the IPL cricket opener at the Eden Gardens, here today. The West Indies mystery spinner, who was reported for suspect action in CLT20 and went on to miss the recently-concluded World Cup, was kept waiting before getting a clean chit by the BCCI on Sunday. A team which has gone on to win two titles (2012 and 2014) since the acquisition of the Trinidad off-spinner in 2011 faces the biggest challenge this year as Narine's effectiveness with a re-modelled action is yet to be seen. With a slew of spinners in their armoury now including a 'Narinelike' KC Cariappa, a rookie from Karnataka who was bought for Rs 2.4 crore, and a couple of chinaman bowlers, KKR will look to thrive on the slow nature of Eden surface. But with evening showers predicted in the city, the spinners may find it hard to grip the white ball and the fielders will also have to put Mumbai Indians coach Ricky Ponting, skipper Rohit Sharma and team mentor Sachin Tendulkar during the practice at the Eden Gardens Stadium on Tuesday. forth their sliding act carefully.
On the field, both the sides match equally on paper but with little baggage of the past and some hard-hitting players in Corey Anderson, Kieron Pollard and new signing Aaron Finch will give an edge to Mumbai Indians. In MI, KKR will have an opposition who have tasted their maiden IPL win in this very surface in 2013 when the Rohit Sharma-led side beat Chennai Super Kings. But their title defence went horribly wrong in 2014 when they suffered five consecutive defeats but managed to make the last four after a dramatic win over Rajasthan Royals but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the eliminator to finish fourth. The chief architect of the win against RR, Anderson, who smashed an unbeaten 95 from 44 balls, will once again play a crucial role along with this year's star acquisition in Australian opener Finch. Add Rohit, the leader, to the chart and Mumbai Indians look a mighty batting line-up capable of terrorising any bowling side. Rohit is known for his inconsistency but he would look forward to start the campaign at his 'favourite' Eden, where he had scored an ODI

world record 264 against Sri Lanka in his last outing. KKR batting is equally strong and tested with last year's top run-getter (Orange Cap winner) Robin Uthappa (660 runs) leading the brigade. Uthappa also occupied the pole position in the Ranji Trophy with 912 runs from 11 matches as the explosive opener along with skipper Gautam Gambhir would look to give the perfect start before the likes of Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav take charge. Yusuf Pathan may not have seen the best of day's in the recent past but given his credentials to win a match single-handedly in subcontinent conditions, the senior Baroda pro is worth a bet. As far as the foreign recruits are concerned, world no 1 all-rounder and Bangladeshi star Shakib Al Hasan will play a crucial role, while the likes of Johan Botha, Brad Hogg and Azhar Mahmood may come handy. While Lasith Malinga and R Vinay Kumar will lead the pace line-up for MI, the home side will have Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav who will look to carry forward their World Cup success.

olkata: West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine got the full backing of his Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir who termed him as an asset and said there can be no back-up for the mystery bowler. Narine got a clean chit for his suspect action two days before the start of IPL-8 Twenty20 cricket tournament from the bowling review committee of the BCCI. "He's an integral part of KKR, he will always be an integral part... Even if he bowls a straight ball, he will be an asset for us and will always remain an asset. That's the confidence we have on Sunil (Narine). We never thought that we needed a back-up spinner for him," Gambhir said when asked whether they strengthened their spin line-up in the auction with suspense prevailing over the Trinidad offspinner. "There can never be a backup for Sunil. I always maintain even if he bowls a straight bowl it will be an advantage. That's the aura he has had on the opposition over the last three years." Narine was reported for suspect action in last season's
CLT20 and went on to miss the recently concluded World Cup. Narine went back to the nets to rework on his action and was cleared by the ICC after his bio-mechanical test in Loughborough but BCCI took a retest at the the Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai before giving a green signal two days ago. Gambhir said they were always confident to get Narine back, especially after remodelling his action. "He was pretty confident as well. I'm happy for him. Hats off to him that he's changed his action in such a short span of time. I'm very happy for him, having known the success he has achieved for KKR," he said. Gambhir sounded confident that Narine would come back strong. "He's a quality player, a quality individual and a tough guy. All these things will come to his advantage. In such situations, first you need to be tough mentally to absorb whatever has happened and come back strong. He has showed how mentally tough he's in the past."
olkata: Kolkata Knight Riders may have the home advantage going into tomorrow's game, but Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma today said his team feels equally at home, having won their maiden Indian Premier League title at this venue two years ago. "We have always felt confident here. If you look at the records, we have done really well here," Rohit told reporters on the eve of their IPL opener against KKR. "First game of the season is very crucial so we have start well whether we bat or bowl first." Playing down talks about the Knight Riders preparing slow pitches to suit their
needs, Rohit said it's "fair" for the hosts to make a suitable wicket for themselves. "I see no reason why a team should not use the home advantage. KKR are doing the same and play according to their strength, which is fair I guess. When you're away from home all odds will be against you," said Rohit. Stressing on the importance of starting on a winning note, Rohit said, "It's a long tournament, you always have a chance to come back but it's not easy, so it's important to start well and take the momentum forward. It gives you a lot of confidence and you can build on your strengths." Rohitholds an ODI world record of scoring 264 runs in his last appearance here.

olkata: Sachin Tendulkar took the centrestage at the Eden Gardens as the Mumbai Indians 'icon' was seen giving a pep talk to his team before getting into a long chat with RCB skipper Virat Kohli ahead of the IPL-8 opener here today. The legendary Indian, who played his penultimate and career's 199th Test here two years ago, landed this morning and joined the boys straightway at Eden Gardens on the eve of their IPL opener against Kolkata Knight Riders. Clad in team jersey and shorts, Tendulkar remained at the ground for the entire two-hour long practice and gave attention to all the 26 Mumbai Indians players.
But the photographer's delight came later in the day when Royal Challengers Bangalore too checked in as Kohli got engaged in a long conversation with the iconic Indian. RCB, who start their campaign against Knight Riders on April 11 here, practised alongside the starstudded Mumbai Indians with coach Ricky Ponting. Terming Tendulkar as an integral part of their side, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said: "He's been part of Mumbai Indians for the last seven years now." Sharma said Tendulkar's visit was not a surprise at all. "He's been an integral part of team ever since he started playing for MI and he continues to be. Whenever we need him, he's always there for us. It was just a strategy for tomorrow's RCB captain Virat Kohli during a game. He was just sharing his practice session at Eden Gardens in thoughts. Nothing much," Sharma Kolkata on Tuesday. signed off.

olkata: Heavy rain came in the way of what was to be a glitzy opening ceremony of Indian Premier League's eighth edition, leaving fans at the decked-up Salt Lake stadium disappointed, with prayers on their lips. The Nor'wester, known as Kal Baishaki in this part of the world, has been threatening to mar the organisers' plan of holding a grand opening ceremony, featuring Bollywood superstars such as Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor. tors kept glued to their seats hoping for the downpour to subside. Umbrellas were out in large numbers across stands and electronic equipments were being quickly covered with rain getting heavier by the minute. A glitzy 'Opening Nite' celebration had been planned at the Salt Lake Stadium. Entertainers were scheduled to come together on one stage to mark the start of the eighth season with the evening's proceedings being hosted by Saif Ali Khan. Matching the energy, verve and spirit of the competition, there was suppose to be a dazzling line-up of Bollywood stars. Earlier, all roads led to
the Salt Lake stadium with excited fans queueing up to get closer to the action. The weather did not dampen the spirit of the thousands of fans who came drenched and waited anxiously to watch the likes of Hrithik and Anushka perform on the dais. But the stage remained under water while the banners and covers were swept away by the thunderstorm. The packed crowd waited, their hopes kept alive by the organisers with frequent announcements that the show would go on. "We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience but at the same time we are thankful for being patient. We will need approxi-
mately half an hour to start the show after the rain stops," an organiser said. The seats were limited to 30,000 only at the VivekanandaYuva Bharati Krirangan but thousands were seen outside the stadium desperate for a last-minute entry. Thundershowers began around 7pm forcing the organisers to to turn off the lights and music that entertained the crowd since the gates opened. After pulling off a controversyfree tournament last year, the organisers would again be hoping for a smooth run when the 47-day tournament, marred by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013, kick starts with the opening night.

also failed to cross the semifinal hurdle. But the speedster was impressed with the Indian pacers and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy. "Led by Dhoni, a fantastic captain with great ideas, they had great plans during the World Cup and they did extremely well to reach the semis considering that they struggled in the early part of the Australian summer. They also bowled the yorkers very well. They used the short ball well in Australia but I am not sure how that's going to work in India. The fields are slightly smaller and the pitches slower but these bowlers are very very good," he said. Ishant Sharma is another pacer that ranks high in Steyn's praise list. Enjoying the SRH dressing room with Ishant, Steyn said that notwithstanding his injuries, the lanky pacer is one good fast bowler. "That's a life of a fast bowler. Sometimes it (injuries) just happens. Fast bowling is not a natural thing. Ishant has struggled with a few injuries. But when he is injury free he is a freak of a bowler. He can do some amazing things with a cricket ball. He is tall, he has got good pace, he hits the deck, he has got a slightly different action so he brings the ball in with his wrist.”
N
ew Delhi: SunRisers Hyderabad pacer Dale Steyn says he is a "big fan" of Umesh Yadav and predicted that in coming years the Indian bowler would be one to look up to. Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Umesh, who has represented India in 12 Tests and 48 ODIs, bagged 18 wickets in eight World Cup games to be behind Mitchell Starc (22) and Trent Boult (22) in the bowlers list. Steyn, who is set to appear in his eight IPL season, is quick to compare Umesh with himself. "I have been a big fan of Yadav. I am a fast bowler, I really like fast bowlers. Umesh Yadav has got a very similar kind of physique as myself. We are both quite short, we are similar in height. He is stronger than I am and he has got a strong action and swings the ball. "As the years go on, Umesh is going to be one of those guys that you can look up to. He can be a really really good Test bowler too. He has got the action to land the ball in the right areas. Swing the ball away at high pace," Steyn told PTI in an interview. Steyn was taken for quite a few runs in the 50-over showpiece event and South Africa

ew Delhi: Eager to experience his first IPL outing, SunRisers Hyderabad's New Zealand import Trent Boult is hoping that Indian conditions will help him carry forward the good work he did during the recently concluded World Cup. Boult, who bagged 22 wickets for runner-up New Zealand in the World Cup, was snapped up by SRH for a whopping Rupees 3.8 crore - a
massive surge from his base price of 50 lakh - in the February auctions. The leftarm seamer is keen to swing things for SRH. "Yes, the length changes I guess. I have played a few games in India and the wickets here are a bit slower. With the night games and humidity, the moisture in the air, I hope the ball swings and hopefully I get success with that. I will try and pitch the ball up as much as possible to get the ball swinging," Boult said.
Excited to rub shoulders with the best i, Boult is looking forward to share the dressing room with the seasoned Dale Steyn and Indian seamers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma. "Amazing, I am very much looking forward to it. Not only Steyn but also looking forward to working with the Kumars (Bhuvneshwar and Praveen) and Ishant as well. It's so great to be playing with the heroes and sharing with them the same dressing room.” Boult said.

argao: Sporting Clube de Goa and Royal Wahingdoh played out a goalless draw in the 15th round of the Hero I-League, played at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda here. It was a thrilling contest as both the teams played attacking game, but Sporting dominated in the first half. While they managed to save at least six chances, their strikers lacked direction. Royal Wahingdoh, who were forced to defend in the first half, came back strongly in the second and had a couple of close chances but they failed to utilise those. In the previous game against Dempo FC, Sporting were denied their first win because of goalkeeping and defensive lapses. They made two changes, bringing in keeper Ravi Kumar and Anthony Wolfe in place of Lalit Thapa and Velito D'Cruz. Royal Wahingdoh defense did well with goalkeeper Nikhil Bernard denying Sandesh Jhingan, Odafe Okolie and Mahmoud Al Amna from scoring. Woodwork, too, came to the rescue of the visitors when Jhingan header came off the cross bar in the second half.
Royal Wahingdoh, who had a dream run in this league, also made two changes by bringing in keeper Nikhil Bernard and Lalmangaihsanga in place of Prem Kumar Singh and Govin Singh. But surprising they were a subdued side today in the first half, and the only time they tested the rival keeper was late in the first half. It was when a stunning shot by Bekay Bawar from top of the box was collected by keeper Ravi Kumar. However, the visitors looked a different side in the second half as they went into the attack and came close to scoring on at least three occasions with Jackichand, Densil Theobald and Beekay Bewar. Sporting went all out in the dying minutes in search of the elusive goal, but they were reduced to 10 men in the 89th minute when Jovel Martins received a double booking from referee Rahul D'Sa for a foul on Beekay Bawar. Sporting has remained at the bottom of the table with just seven points from 13 matches, while Royal Wahingdoh are placed second with 22 points from 13 matches.

Singapore: CWG bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt and young B Sai Praneeth advanced to the main draw of Singapore Open Super Series badminton tournament after notching up contrasting wins in the men's singles qualifiers. Gurusaidutt outsmarted Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana 18-21 21-18 2118 in the first round and then tamed Chinese Taipei's Tzu Wei Wang 219 21-13 to make it to the main draw. Praneeth, too, produced some scintillating performance in the qualifiers, edging out Denmark's Rasmus Fladberg 18-21 21-18 2112 first and then disposed off Malaysia Zulfadli Zulkiffli after his rival retired midway at 11-6. Kona Tarun and N Sikki Reddy, who won titles at Uganda and Romania last month, also made it to the main draw after twin victories in the qualifiers. Tarun and Sikki defeated Singapore's Jian Liang Lee and Jia Ying Crystal Wong 21-11 21-12 in the opening round and then beat Malaysian combo of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif and Sannatasah Saniru 21-11 21-17 in the next round. But the Bangalore shuttler lost to Simon Santoso of Indonesia 1621 18-21 in the second round to crash out of the tournament.
PCI sacks its president, contemplates criminal case Borges, Chile score hat-tricks
N
ew Delhi: The Paralympics Committee of India (PCI) has sacked its president Rajesh Tomar for the gross mismanagement at the recent National Para-Athletics Championship in Ghaziabad, where athletes suffered due to lack of proper facilities. There were also charges of financial mismanagement during the 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games on Tomar. The decision to suspend Tomar, who blamed the government for the Ghaziabad fiasco, was taken at the Executive Committee meeting of the PCI on April 4 in Bangalore. The Executive Committee has appointed a three-member panel headed by a retired Delhi High Court Justice to
probe Tomar's "misuse of power" and alleged financial mismanagement. Tomar was not present at the EC meeting. PCI Secretary General J Chandrashekar told PTI that Tomar was mainly responsible for the mismanagement of the Ghaziabad event but he "shifted" the blame to government instead of owning responsibility as head of the national para sports body. He said Tomar also suspended five officials blaming them for the Ghaziabad fiasco and appointed an inquiry panel without authority. In a shocking case of official apathy, differently-abled sportspersons participating in the 15th National ParaAthletics Championships
(March 20-22) were put up at unfurnished and unhygienic accommodations in Ghaziabad, prompting the Sports Ministry to seek a report from the organisers. Interestingly, the PCI Secretary General said that no action will be taken against anybody by the PCI for the Ghaziabad incident. "Tomar only gave the green signal to go ahead the National Para Athletics Championships at Ghaziabad and said everything was fine. He did not go for a pre-event inspection. He is based nearby but he was not present for most part of the event. Instead of owning up responsibility he shifted the blame to others and to the sports ministry. So the EC has decided to suspend him," he said from
Bangalore. "He (Tomar) misused his power by appointing an inquiry committee to probe the Ghaziabad incident without consulting any office bearer and then suspended five executive committee members on charges of financial misappropriation in a unilateral decision without authority. EC can only do that and not the President. "Those officials had nothing to do with any financial matter and the letter of suspension sent to them were on the personal letterhead of Tomar and not of PCI and so null and void," he added. Tomar could not be contacted despite repeated attempts as his mobile phone returned with switched-off response.

poh (Malaysia): Still winless after two outings, a demoralised India would be desperate to get their Azlan Shah Cup hockey campaign back on track with a positive result against a spirited Malaysia in their third league match, here today. Under new chief coach Paul van Ass, India are still searching for their first win in the tournament following a 1-1 draw against Korea in their opener and then a 1-2 loss at the hands of New Zealand yesterday at the Azlan Shah Stadium. But Malaysia, who are three ranks below India (9) in the world rankings, have shown in their 2-3 loss against world champions Australia that they are a tough nut to crack. To add to it, Malaysia will
have the home support behind them and it remains to be seen how the Indian sticks cope up with the pressure. It is not that India played badly in the last two matches. In fact, they dominated the possession and were more creative on the turf but what did them in was their forwards inability to convert chances into goals and the fragile backline, which succumbed under pressure. The Indians created plenty of scoring opportunities in the last two games but the strikers, especially Ramandeep Singh failed to deliver results. With one goal apiece, Akashdeep and Nikkin's performance can be termed as satisfactory but Ramandeep has been a complete let down as he missed easy chances in both the matches. India's problems have

Ipoh (Malaysia): Missed chances were the order of the day for India in its opening two games of the ongoing 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament and national captain Sardar Singh minced no words when he said that the team's forwardline will have to play more responsibly to give themselves any chance of reaching the final here. been compounded by the injury to young striker Mandeep Singh, who twisted his ankle against Korea and sat out of yesterday's game. He has swelling in his ankle and might take a few more days to recover.
Anirban Lahiri sees Masters as great chance for himself and Indian golf
A
ugusta (Georgia): Anirban Lahiri has aroused the interest and curiosity of almost the entire golfing world. Hailing from the world’s second most populous nation and coming with a record of four wins in 12 months, two of them in cosanctioned events, his rise to
world no. 34, had led to questions about golf in India, his own growth chart and of course what his performance could mean for the game back home. The 27-year-old, who has had to change his schedule and travel plans by winning the lucrative Malaysian and Hero Indian Open had han-
dled all this spotlight very well with separate media meeting at the WGC-Cadillac, Shell Houston Open and now the Masters. Playing his fourth Major but the first Masters – he has played at the British Open and PGA earlier on – Lahiri admits, "It's obviously been one of those things that I have wanted to do, to be here ideally inside the ropes, where I find myself this year. I think this is obviously one of those events that growing up as a kid, anyone who is playing golf or has watched golf, followed golf, associates the sport with and associates history with, and I am no different. So it's a very exciting time in my career for me, great opportunities and really excited to be here." Azad Shrivastav | ADC

following a 1-1 draw against Korea in their opener and then a 1-2 loss at the hands of New Zealand yesterday at the Azlan Shah Stadium. The Indians created plenty of scoring opportunities in the two games but the strikers, especially Ramandeep Singh failed to deliver. With one goal apiece, Akashdeep Singh and Nikkin Thimmaiah's performance can be termed as satisfactory but Ramandeep has been a complete let down. The backline continues to be a bane for India and it yet again came to the fore when they conceded a late goal, courtesy some sloppy defending to hand New Zealand a win yesterday. Despite enjoying better
possession and ball control, India paid the price for letting their guard down when put under under the pump. The Indians also need to work on their penalty corner conversation rate, which is their strong point in the presence of two high quality drag flickers in VR Raghunath and Rupinder Pal Singh. Coach Van Ass was candid enough to admit that his wards need to reduce their mistakes on the turf to get results. "It is unfortunate but there is nothing wrong with the way we are playing hockey. The level of play has been very good we are not getting the results. May be that will come with time. But I feel our mistakes should reduce," he had said after the New Zealand match. Malaysia, on the other hand, would be gunning for a
win to please the home crowd. The hosts might have lost both their opening two matches, but against defending champions Australia they showed that they can't be taken lightly. The Malaysians came up with a spirited display to make Australia toil hard for the win. They frustrated the Kookaburras for nearly 43 minutes for the first goal and surprised their opponents with goals from counter-attacks. So understandably, the Indians can only take Malaysia lightly at their own peril. "They (Malaysia) surprised me with their performances (against New Zealand and Australia). So I am expecting a very high standard match. The atmosphere is going to be electric," Van Ass said about the upcoming game.
