Congress MP Shashi Tharoor alleges police assault on his domestic help into ‘confessing’ that they both killed Sunanda Pushkar SIT begins probe into Sunanda’s death

EW DELHI: In yet another twist in his wife's death, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has accused Delhi Police of 'assaulting' and 'intimidating' his domestic help into 'confessing' that they both killed Sunanda Pushkar as police said it believes prima facie it is a case of murder. A Special Investigation Team has been constituted to probe Sunanda's death, said Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to whom Tharoor had written a letter on November 12 last year alleging police pressure on his domestic help Narayan Singh. In the letter, the former Union Minister had complained of 'unacceptable and illegal' conduct by one of its officers who 'repeatedly physically assaulted' his domestic help Singh to force him to confess that they both murdered her. Tharoor said he and his staff had 'cooperated fully'

with the police probing the case, reports PTI. "I was therefore shocked and appalled to learn that in the course of the 16-hour interrogation conducted by four Delhi Police officers on Friday (7/11/14) and again during the 14- hour interrogation on Saturday (8/11/14), my domestic helper Narayan Singh was repeatedly physically assaulted by one of your

officers. "Worse, the officer used the traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into 'confessing' that he and I murdered my wife," Tharoor said in the letter. Tharoor also referred to his telephonic conversation with Bassi on November 8 when he had expressed his concerns Continued on pg 12 «

‘Ghar Wapsi’ by Shiv Sena too Former mayor Shubha Raul, who had defected to MNS, returns to Shiv Sena By Suyash Padate

A

s a major blow to the BJP's attempt to take the control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through their 'Mission 100' in the forthcoming civic elections, the Shiv Sena has started the 'Ghar Wapsi' (home-coming) operation. As a part of this effort, the Sena leadership welcomed former Mayor of Mumbai Shubha Raul in to the party fold. Three-time Sena corporator Raul was upset when the party re-nominated Vinod Ghosalkar from Dahisar Assembly constituency. She openly expressed her displeasure about this decision by the Sena leadership. Eventually Raul deserted the party before the state Assembly election, as she was denied a party ticket to contest elections from Dahisar in place of sitting Sena legislator Ghosalkar. Last morning, Raul went to

Shubha Raul Matoshree and met Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and expressed her desire to join the party. Within no time she was formally inducted into the Sena fold. Speaking to reporters, Raul said, “I do not call my decision as 're-joining the Shiv Sena'. This is only homecoming for me. I had left the party as there had been many complaints against then MLA Vinod Ghosalkar,

but he was given a ticket once again. Now since he lost the polls, my work is done. This prompted me to join hands with my party once again.” The former Mumbai Mayor had then said that she had intimated her party senior leaders that a woman candidate should be given priority in the Assembly election from the Dahisar constituency, as majority of the corporators in the area were women, but the party ignored her requests. Shubha Raul contested on the MNS ticket and challenged Sena's Ghosalkar along with Congress' Sheetal Mhatre and BJP's Manisha Chowdhary. Surprisingly, Chowdhary won the seat with a margin of 38,578 votes. Significantly, this is one more setback for the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Many prominent MNS leaders are leaving the party which is fast losing ground in the state.
