CBI probe for Vyapam scam MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has, under pressure, decided to hold a CBI probe into the Vyapam scam
B
HOPAL/NEW DELHI: After resolutely rejecting calls for a CBI probe, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan yesterday decided to seek an investigation into the murky Vyapam scam by the central agency on a day the Supreme Court agreed to hear petitions in this regard. Following Chouhan's announcement at a press conference, the state government moved the Madhya Pradesh
High Court seeking its direction for institution of a CBI probe into the massive admission and recruitment scam. "We have filed a plea in the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the Vyapam scam," Additional Advocate General P Kaurav told PTI. Under intense opposition attack and mounting public outrage over a string of deaths of people associated with Vyapam, a beleagured
Chouhan, a third time chief minister, announced his decision to recommend to the high court a CBI inquiry. "Loktantra lok lajja se chalta hai (public perception is important in democracy). Honouring public sentiments, I will request the high court for a CBI probe," Chouhan said, adding "the functioning of the government should be beyond any doubt." "I have full respect for both High Court and the Supreme Court and have total faith in the ongoing probe into the Vyapam scam," he told a hurriedly convened press conference in Bhopal.

Down memory lane…
An avid kite flier, Parag eagerly waited for Makar Sankranti A pall of gloom descended on the Lazarus Park area after the news of Parag’s demise trickled in. With tears rolling down their eyes Sandip Wairkar, Harshad Dalvi, Priyesh Tandel, Shivam Chougle, Siddhesh Tupe and Kiran Patil remembered him as a quiet peace loving friend who was always at the forefront in social activities organized by the residential society. He along with his friends had played an instrumental role in forming the Lazarus Mitra Mandal - a social youth organisation which held events like Dahi Handi and Ganeshutsav with Parag’s active participation. “Flying kites was his passion and he would eagerly wait for Makar Sankranti. He was a very helpful person and was fond of get togethers and outings. We always thought he would be fine and return home one day but now everything is over, he will be alive in our hearts,” said Harshad Dalvi. While Parag’s initial schooling took place at Abhinav Vidya Mandir in Goddev village, he completed his higher studies from Shankar Narayan College in Bhayandar (east). Parag used to participate in Kho-Kho competitions in school. “He was a person with a positive frame of mind who believed that friendship could be one’s greatest strength,” said one of his colleagues, who too remembers him as a colorful and jovial man who put them at ease, merely by his presence. Parag’s final rites will take place in Bhayandar on Wednesday.

fter being comatose for 9 years, one of the survivors of the 7/11 Mumbai blasts, 36year-old-Parag Sawant passed away at Hinduja Hospital on Tuesday morning. Parag was heading to his home in Bhayandar in a Virarbound local train when a bomb ripped apart the coach between the Bhayandar and Mira Road railway station onJuly 7, 2006. He suffered extensive brain injuries and was rushed to the Bhakti Vedanta Hospital in Mira Road and was later shifted to Hinduja Hospital. Two years into coma, Parag regained consciousness for a brief period in 2008, but once again slipped into vegetative state, this time for another seven years till he breathed his last on Tuesday at Hinduja hospital. Consultant Neurosurgeon at Hinduja Hospital Dr. B.K. Misra, who was treating Parag, said, “Early this (Tuesday) morning at 5:30, the staff nurse checked Parag and his condition was stable. Later at 6:00 am his saturation levels had dropped and he was put on oxygen to stabilize his
breathing condition. He had a sudden respiratory arrest for which the CPR team conducted all the resuscitation measures. In spite of all resuscitation measures Parag could not be revived and was declared dead at 6:54 am.”
Parag died because of cardio respiratory arrest and most likely possibility of immediate deterioration could be pulmonary embolism, said the doctor. A pall of gloom descended on the Lazarus Park area of Bhayandar
(east) where Parag stayed in the second floor apartment in Ramabai Apartments. He was 26 when he became a victim of the terror attack and worked as an Assistant Sales Manager in Mumbai. He is survived by parents Jaiprakash and Madhuri, brother Pratik, wife Priti and 8-year-
old daughter Prachiti. To add to the tragedy Parag never saw his daughter as she was born after the incident. His wife Priti who is now employed with the Railways is the sole bread-winner of the griefstruck family. — with inputs by Vrushali Purandare

Three people were seen using a remote-controlled drone yesterday flying at a height of about 55 feet, the police official said. A professor who works at a college nearby had noticed the drone
on Monday and filmed it on his cellphone. He had submitted the mobile footage to the Trombay Police. In the video, a group of people who operated the drone can reportedly be seen leaving the location in a car. However, no case was registered till the time of going to the press. The officer said, “We are questioning the people who were allegedly flying drones and two persons have been detained. Prima facia it appears they wanted aerial photographs and videos for a project they were working on. Investigations are on as of now.” It is illegal to fly drones without
prior police permission. The BARC, which includes advanced nuclear labs, has been on the terror hit-list for years. In May, a high alert was triggered at the main international airport in Mumbai after a pilot re-
ported a sighting of 'mysterious objects' floating above the runway. They were later identified by the police as helium balloons released as a marketing stunt for a diamondselling company.

Why women live longer than men decoded Men have shorter lives than women because they are more prone to heart disease, claims a new study that found significant differences in life expectancies between the sexes first emerged as recently as the turn of the 20th century. Across the entire world, women can expect to live longer than men. Researchers wondered why does this occur and was this always the case. According to the study led by researchers at the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology, significant differences in life expectancies between the sexes first emerged as recently as the turn of the 20th century. As infectious disease prevention, improved diets and other positive health behaviours were adopted by people born during the 1800s and early 1900s, death rates plummeted, but women began reaping the longevity benefits at a much faster rate.
In the wake of this massive but uneven decrease in mortality, a review of global data points to heart disease as the culprit behind most of the excess deaths documented in adult men, said USC University Professor Eileen Crimmins. "We were surprised at how the divergence in mortality between men and women, which originated as early as 1870, was concentrated in the 50-to-70 age range and faded out sharply after age 80," Crimmins said. The study examined the life spans of people born between 1800 and 1935 in 13 developed nations. Focusing on mortality in adults over the age of 40, the team found that in individuals born after 1880, female death rates decreased 70 per cent faster than those of males. Even when the researchers controlled for smoking-related illnesses, cardiovascular disease appeared to still be the cause of the vast majority of
an electric vehicle deployed as a self-driving, or autonomous, taxi in 2030 would be 63 to 82 per cent lower than a projected 2030 hybrid vehicle driven as a privately owned car and 90 per cent lower than a 2014 gasoline-powered private vehicle. Almost half of the savings is attributable to "rightsizing," where the size of the taxi deployed is tailored to each trip's occupancy needs. "When we first started looking at autonomous vehicles, we found that, of all the variables we could consider, the use of autonomous vehicles as part of a shared transit system seemed to be the biggest lever that pointed to lower energy use per mile," said Berkeley Lab scientist Jeffery Greenblatt. Many automakers and A fleet of driverless taxis other companies are working roaming a city to pick up on autonomous cars. excess deaths in adult men over 40 for the same time period. Surprisingly, smoking accounted for only 30 per cent of the difference in mortality between the sexes after 1890, Crimmins said. The uneven impact of cardiovascular illness-related deaths on men, especially during middle and early older age, raises the question of whether men and women face different heart disease risks due to inherent biological risks and/or protective factors at different points in their lives, said USC University Professor Caleb Finch.
Driverless taxis can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions
vehicles means reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions," said Greenblatt who co-authored the study published in Nature Climate Change with Samveg Saxena. Another factor contributing to lower emissions for autonomous taxis is a cleaner electric grid. By 2030 power plants are expected to be using more renewable energy and emitting less pollution, meaning the greenhouse gas intensity of electricity will be lower. The researchers also conducted an economic
analysis to determine how cost-effective autonomous taxis would be. At 12,000 miles per year, the average distance travelled in the US for privately owned cars, electric vehicles in 2030 are still expected to be more expensive than owning and operating a gasolinepowered car, the study found. But if the vehicle is driven 40,000 to 70,000 miles per year, typical for US taxis, they found that an alternative-fuel vehicle (hydrogen fuel cell or electric battery) was the most cost-effective option.

Singh stated that many MPs argued that the Rs 3 lakh limit for eTendering was not feasible for works under Village Development Plans (VDP). Moreover, the MPs further argued that at village level it was hard to find people well versed with technicalities and formalities of e-Tendering. Besides this, some states had varying fiscal limits for e-Tendering. In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

BMC presents statistics on monsoon ailments By Priyanka Bhatt

n Tuesday Additional Municipal Commissioner held a conference on monsoon related diseases that are of prime concern to the city every year. The other officers present there included Executive Health Officer Dr. Padmaja Keskar, Consultant of Infectious Diseases Dr. Om Shrivastav, Chief of Disaster Management Cell Mahesh Narvekar and BMC's TB Control Officer Dr. Mini Khetarpal. Deshmukh dwelt on the preventive measures taken by the BMC to minimise any health hazards caused by monsoon. “The preventive measures taken are rodent control drive to get rid of the mice in the city, fogging areas to exterminate insects and pests and finding and removing stagnated water spots where mosquitoes breed,” Deshmukh said, adding that all required medicines are available in all BMC dispensaries, and extra beds have been added to all BMC hospitals. The OPDs as well as casualty services are active 24 hours a day. From January to July there have been 2,886 cases of Malaria, 1,842 cases of H1N1, and 26 cases of Leptospirosis reported. However, the number of deaths by Leptospirosis has been maximum this year, most cases being recorded in the stretch between Goregaon to Dahisar. “We are investigating that why the cases in this particular belt of Goregaon-Dahisar have been higher, and we shall take the required action
once we find out,” Deshmukh said. There have been 26 cases reported out of which 21 were reported in July. Leptospirosis has caused 12 deaths till now. According to the panel of doctors present at the conference, the deaths happened because most of these cases approached the doctor late. The doctors present there spoke about the symptoms of Leptospirosis. “Along with fever, there is immense bodyache and headache. But, Leptospirosis is curable, the treatment of which happens in two phases,” explained Dr. Shrivastav. As precautionary measures, Dr. Keskar said, “Avoid walking barefoot in water, especially in areas that are water logged. If there are open wounds in the legs, the water can infect you faster. The water also contains bacteria from urine and faeces of stray animals. Also, in case of fever, do not self medicate and see a doctor immediately,” she explained. Deshmukh also said that Leptospirosis is easily curable, and in general there is a rise in cases between July to October.

10-year-old boy miraculously survived after being bitten by a venomous snake while playing at the Jesal Park Chowpatty in Bhayandar (east), however the incident has not only exposed the lack of treatment facilities, but also the fact that there is hardly any awareness at private clinics and some of the bigger hospitals about the source to obtain Anti Snake Venom Serum (ASVS). The serum is supposed to

A VII student of Mother Mary School in Bhayandar, Vishal Singh (10) was playing football when he got bitten on his left leg apparently by a venomous snake on Friday evening. In the absence of snake-bite treatment facilities, Vishal was shuttled from a local dispensary to a leading hospital in Mira Road. After all attempts for the search for local treatment failed, Vishal was finally rushed to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri- after nearly an hour long drive from Mira Road. A medical team swung into rescue mode and after extended rounds of treatments, Vishal was fortunate to survive the deadly sting. When contacted deputy civic chief Sambhaji Panpatte said, “Not only is our hospital in Mira Road is equipped with ASVS vials, but private hospital authorities have been directed to inform us if they need them to treat snake-bite patients.” The boy’s father Vipin Singh who runs a grocery store had to spend around Rs. 70,000 towards medical expenses which he raised as loans from his friends and kin.

Fadnavis’ old photos go viral on social media, FIR lodged By Prashant Hamine
T
here is trouble in store for some netizens of social media as BJP leader from Nagpur Dharampal Meshram lodged an FIR yesterday at Nandanvan police station against unknown persons for circulating old photograph of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family out on vacation in Goa some years ago. Meshram in his FIR had mentioned that the photograph was uploaded on social media platforms like WhatsApp at a time when the Chief Minister is in United States of America on an official visit to attract foreign investment. He added that the circulation of the photographs on social media was
aimed at tarnishing the image of the Chief Minister. Meshram stated that the photograph of the Chief Minister and his family was not taken in USA. He said the Chief Minister was trying his level best to attract foreign investment in Maharashtra with a view to generate employment for local youth. However, some
anti-social elements have made deplorable attempts to tarnish the image of the Chief Minister. Meshram in a statement issued here yesterday stated that the incident has hurt the sentiments of many party workers and more such FIRs will be lodged by party workers across the state. Sources disclosed that the photograph of Fadnavis and his family was from their personal social media account and was from their vacation in Goa some years ago. The same photograph was now sought to be passed off as the Chief Minister and his family enjoying a vacation in the USA even as he was there seeking investment in the state.
Munde remarked “have any agency of the world or from the universe to probe. I am ready to face any probe. I have never said No to any probe”. Commenting upon the demand to raise the etendering limit of Rs 3 lakh, she said that at the village panchayat level the norm could cause delay in implementation of the schemes and projects. Speaking to newspersons at Mantralaya, Mungantiwar clarified that the government has merely sought a report on the purchases made by all the departments using Rate Contract in the last decade. He
added that the decision on whether to have a probe into the report will be taken by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Mungantiwar further clarified that he was in no way casting any aspersion that any scam had taken place in these purchases of last 10 years. The Minister for Finance disclosed that the government while compiling the data came to know that 31,208 items were lying unused in godowns in the state in 2013-14 and the government had spent Rs 29.13 crore on purchase of these items which amounts to misuse of government funds.

A silly issue? T
O Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, the Vyapam scam is ‘a small issue’. Over 40 people have died so far in the scam — related incidents, hundreds are absconding, many are in jail. The deaths have not stopped. Several politicians in positions of power are scared. Uma Bharati is afraid an attempt might be made on her life. Perhaps even the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh is under pressure. It is possible that he kept putting off a decision to call the CBI. And even today, many are under threat. To stay alive, they have to keep their mouth shut. When journalists make an attempt to expose the scam, they die an ‘unnatural death’. It is a job and education scam which involves powerful politicians, top officials in government, rich aspirants. The scam surfaced two years ago, but it has not been stopped by the police, In fact, there has been no attempt by the government to end the scam because perhaps those at the top in the government themselves want the scam to go on. No wonder then, deaths continue to occur. Last week, there have been three deaths which were linked to Vyapam scam. And the Union law minister says it is a ‘simple and silly issue’ and that the prime minister should not be asked his opinion about it. The conclusion is unavoidable that there are some leaders in the BJP government who are not in touch with some grim realities facing the country.

HERE'S been such a hue and cry because former RAW chief A.S. Dulat told a TV channel that the Vajpayee government 'goofed up' in its response to the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane. He said the plane should have been immobilised when it landed at Amritsar airport. But because no-one was able to take a decision, the plane took off and eventually landed up in Kandahar in Afghanistan. Actually Dulat was only repeating the opinion of many in the security establishment. Ironically, the most stringent criticism of the Vajpayee government’s response has been from current National Security Advisor Ajit Doval who was the chief negotiator for the Kandahar hijacking from the Indian side. On the 10th anniversary of the hijacking, in 2009, Doval slammed the government response as a 'diplomatic failure' and 'a bloody disgrace'. It may be embarrassing for the BJP leadership today to be reminded of Doval’s harsh criticism. It may even be embarrassing for Doval. But thanks to Google, his comments are archived for posterity in cyber space. Doval said that the then government didn’t lobby hard enough with the US and other foreign powers to build pressure on Pakistan and the hijackers to release the plane and passengers. He was especially harsh on Jaswant Singh, then foreign minister and Lalit Mansingh, then foreign secretary. “Jaswant Singhji says that he did a lot... but no-one worth any consequence was contacted either by the foreign minister or the foreign secretary,’’ he declared. In fact, he grumbled that the government weakened under pressure from passengers and the media and overturned his original brief. He had gone to Kandahar as head of a four-member negotiating team on the understanding that he would keep the hijackers engaged for as long as possible while the government in New Delhi lobbied for international intervention in the crisis. Instead, he recalls that he was horrified to see the foreign minister fly in with three terrorists who were released on demand from the hijackers. Harsh words indeed from the man heading the security establishment today. But Dulat has caught the flak.

tional elections in October. Rahul was expected to be formally elected Congress president although there was speculation that he may assume the post a few weeks ahead of the actual election. But now, the membership drive has been extended indefinitely. This means that the organisational elections have also been postponed indefinitely. So when will Rahul become Congress president? Congress circles have no clue. But they are busy speculating that Rahul’s elevation may also be postponed indefinitely. This is the fourth extension to the membership drive which began in October 2014.

‘Because love is your nature’ HERE are some who long for change. Feeling that every thing is stagnant in their lives, they want to change partners, careers, dwellings. There are some who are afraid of change. They feel security in the way they are. There are some who see change, but do not acknowledge it. There are some who do not notice change at all. There are others who do not think there is anything to change. There are some who realize that everything is changing, yet see there is something that is non-changing. Those who recognize the nonchanging amid the change are the wisest. Question: “Must love always change?” Love is your very nature. What is your nature cannot change. But the expression of

HE reaction of Vasundhara Raje and son Dushyant to the raging Lalitgate controversy has been rather odd. Interestingly, like with Nehru, it seems the Dilip Kumar mischief emanated from a government IP address. A web paper did some research and found that government employees regularly edit Wikipedia entries to update readers on useful and practical information about India like prevailing metro fares, availability of radio taxis, etc. The research also found that in between these routine edits, government employees also fiddle around with other entries. Their favourite topics for intervention are film stars, movies and television. HE question being asked everywhere today is: why is the Prime Minister silent as the Congress party and the media slam his party and government day after day over Lalitgate. The answer put forward by some sections is that Modi is simply following the Gujarat model. Recall how he kept quiet when the media hammered him for the Gujarat riots. He remained mum through all the name calling for 12 years, never once opening his mouth to defend himself or his government. And he won three consecutive elections in the state and ruled for 12 years as chief minister. According to Modi watchers, he is simply following the same policy here. While the media goes hammer and tongs at him for refusing to respond to the Lalitgate charges against Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, Modi continues to unveil one grand event after another, from #selfiewithdaughter to Digital India. They say he feels all this name calling doesn’t matter as long as he remains connected with people. They insist he is doing this through his daily tweets and his event management. But one bird insists that Modi will break his silence during the monsoon session of Parliament. This bird says that he will choose an opportune time to lash out at the Congress, hoping to turn the tables on the main opposition party and cap the Lalitgate controversy. Political circles are waiting and watching.
You do not know how to respond. You feel obliged and bound. You shrink or shy away. You feel foolish and awkward. You try to reciprocate. You doubt the love expressed
and you doubt your own worthiness. You are afraid of losing respect because love does not allow distance. Your ego hardens and does not allow you to receive and reciprocate. The ability to receive genuine love comes with the ability to give love. The more you are centred and know by experience that you are changes. Dangerous Vyapam deaths
CBI inquiry can unravel the mystery surrounding multi-crore Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh that rocked the nation after series of unnatural deaths. A deadly virus seems to have taken the entire Madhya Pradesh into its grip. This virus by the name 'Vyapam' has already had around 50 deaths, mostly under mysterious circumstances. The only visible symptom seems to be proximity to the virus or trying to unearth more about it. Surprisingly though some people (the elite political class) seems to be totally vaccinated against it or their systems are immune to not just this but the other dangerous virus that is cropping up i.e. Eliminationgate. Will the PM speak against this? Oh sorry he is just on a foreign trip to solve some international matters, which may be good for the nation in decade or so. —Abdul Monim, Vashi
MISFORTUNES never come alone. That perhaps explains why several scandals have surfaced almost simultaneously to haunt Narendra Modi. Coming close on the heels of those involving Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje is the socalled 'Vyapam' scam in Madhya Pradesh.
Tribute to Jagjivan Ram FOR a government that decided to do away with observing birth and death anniversaries of national leaders except Mahatma Gandhi, the presence of at least four Union Ministers paying homage to former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram on his death anniversary appears to be a conspicuous departure. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Ministers in the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry offered floral tributes to the late leader, who is known to be one of the tallest Harijan leaders in the country’s political history. The significance of the event being observed at a slightly higher level than even 'Babuji’s' birth anniversary this April is not lost with the elections in Bihar approaching. The late leader who served in successive Union Cabinets since being the youngest minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s interim government in 1946 hails from Bihar. In fact the Modi government, on as-

The deaths of nearly 45 people who were either among the accused or were witnesses in the probe into the Vyapam scam lend the episode additional suspense. The least that Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Madhya Pradesh's chief minister, can do is hand over the case to an independent agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation. The special investigating team that is now probing the case reports directly to the chief minister. It is unrealistic to expect its work to be unbiased. The chief minister's claim that he has ordered the probe by the SIT is thus unconvincing. If Mr Chauhan does not order a CBI probe on his own, Mr Modi should do it for him. Since the last general elections, he has emerged as the tallest leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. —Bhagwan Thadani, Pune
APROPOS 'Two more unnatural Vyapam deaths' (ADC, Jul 6), this aftermath of this two year old unique scam is indeed causing national concern especially to current Modi Sarkar. At least 44 deaths
have occurred as on date and this trend would certainly go unabated if something like a serious action from nothing less than the PMO's office is undertaken immediately. Although the high court in MP has been on this scam however the miscreants fearlessly are going ahead with killing mercilessly the people who are involved in exposing those accused. In fact they are openly in broad day light not only threatening but killing those who have stuck out their heads including the journos involved in the media both the electronic and the print. It has taken as such a dangerous turn in respect of the deaths including two Deans of state medical institution. This would cause serious damage to the BJP's goodwill which the current PM built up so far. This would certainly erode the confidence of the public in the state as well as the central government administration. —Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
THE mystery surrounding the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh took a new turn after two unnatural deaths. It is a matter of great concern that both journalists and the dean of a medical officer assisting probe into multi-crore professional recruitment exam scam were found dead in mysterious circumstances. The death comes exactly a year after the death of the medical officer's predecessor. A CBI inquiry can bring out the truth in the controversial Vyapam scam. It is taking a dramatic proportion as more and more people connected with the scam in some way or the other fell as victims. The sudden death of the TV journalist came as a rude shock and now the death of dean made the country shook with horror. With the death of dean 40 lives have been lost in the multifarious scam and there is no stopping as the number suggests. It is high time to go all out to find the root of all the problems in the days to come. —C.K. Ramani, Vashi

Attack on senior citizens SENIOR citizens in the city of Mumbai continue to suffer and the death of the elderly lady from Santacruz is one more case of aged people suffering in isolation. The intruders courier boy or delivery boy take note of the loneliness take advantage and attack them mercilessly. This is happening in affluent areas in Western suburbs and the loss of life after the attack made a question mark about the security of seniors in the city. A helpless lady on the wheelchair suffered the fate and even ventilator could not save her from dying. After the retirement of the seniors, the hard earned money saved by them are targeted to make good to the culprits kitty and they are ready to do whatever they feels like doing to damage their small wealth earned and in the process the elderly people are made to meet their end due to gruesome attack. Police department should take heed to this fact and make sure that seniors did not suffer in isolation and proper security is provided for the safety of the senior citizens in the Metro city. —S. Save girl child A campaign has to be acceptable as well as popular to become successful and PM's Beti Bachao Selfie Banao abhayan is a move in the right direction to promote the girl child. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not just the most popular man in India today but also the entire universe and who better than him could have been a brand ambassador to lead a campaign to protect and promote a girl child. Human race would become extinct if girl child are killed or aborted and killing the fair sex is like scoring a self goal. But amidst the promotion and noise to promote as well as protect the fair sex, we need to take some hard meas-
ures to stop cruelty against the girl child. Treat abortion of female foetus as murder and give exemplary punishment to people who commit this crime including doctors and radiologists who run this illegal business. The carrot and stick theory needs to be applied and the govt. should give tax benefits as well as other monetary advantages like free education, medical aids etc to females to promote their numbers. —S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
Great subsidy indeed IF subsidy is required to be given then the most deserving recipients are our farmers who for want all that are needed for cultivation of crops and all that are eatables, suffer a great deal lot. Indeed, chemical fertilizers as also other inorganic fertilizers products, and all others that are needed including cow dung and urine which are considered to be healthy and free from unwanted germs and insects which spoil crops. Elsewhere in a report it mooted to import cow dung to use as fertilizers so as to maintain soil health whereby better produce would be ensured instead of using chemical fertilizers which tend to deteriorate crops and thus spoil cultivation not to omit human health. Indeed, elsewhere a report suggests to import cow dung for making nutritional fertilizers which would be free from warms and insects as also resultant incurable diseases which affect both humans and animals and thus powerful and invigorating which help yield better crop etc. But, a word of caution: not to succumb to scam like situation like in the case of fodder (scam). —P. ED’s ridiculous attempt ED's attempt to serve notice on Lalit Modi is laughable, knowing fully well that beside being too late , accused is out of their reach (LaMo mum on 1000Cr payment to D company, dated 7th July,15). It's a mere hogwash to contain the damage. ED was silent on all these years until LaMo was made hot property by the media. LaMo is running a trial while sitting in London and putting lot of leaders in the dock for their links to him. While LaMo was enjoying extended cover of security, ED never thought it to be prudent to go into the details of threats. STANA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underlined the Islamic heritage of both India and Central Asia defined by the highest ideals and said it has always rejected the forces of extremism. Modi, who flew to Kazakhstan's capital from Uzbekistan earlier in the day, said the confluence of Indian and Islamic civilisations took place in Central Asia and enriched each other not only in spiritual thought but also in medicine, science, mathematics and astronomy. Addressing a gathering at the Nazerbayev University, the Prime Minister also made a strong pitch for enhanced defence and security cooperation with the Central Asian countries, saying, "We live at the frontier of instability. We live close to the crucible of extremism and terrorism. We see terrorism spawned by nations and groups. EW DELHI: Social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday came out in support of the long-pending 'One Rank One Pension' (OROP) scheme, saying it is a 'fair demand'. EW DELHI: An Istanbulbound Turkish Airlines flight from Bangkok with 134 passengers on board landed at the IGI Airport here in emergency conditions after a message on a washroom mirror about the presence of a bomb triggered a scare. The Airbus 330 aircraft is being checked for explosives, by CISF and Bomb Disposal Squads, reports PTI. "No explosive was found inside the cabin. The cargo portion is being checked," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said, adding the process may take about three hours. CISF Director General Surender

Flight TKO65 sought an emergency landing after its pilot was informed about a message scribbled on the mirror of a washroom with a lipstick warning about the presence of a bomb in the cargo hold. "The pilot was informed of a message written with lipstick on the mirror of one of the plane's washrooms that there was a bomb in the cargo hold of the aircraft, leading the pilot to seek Nagpur ATC's permission to land the aircraft there. "The case lodged against them is not satisfactory... It only concerns the charge of using abusive language," he said, adding that even the suspension of the two is for keeping the woman's husband in illegal confinement for over 24 hours. "Given these charges, the two will get reinstated very easily," he said. Santosh said they might seek time to meet the chief minister soon to raise their demands. As Chouhan buckled under all round pressure to go for a CBI probe, a day after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh ruled it out in the absence of a direction from the court, Congress dismissed the move, insisting merely an investigation by the premier agency would not suffice and that it should be monitored by the Supreme Court.

Amartya Sen skeptical over PM’s idea of secularism N
EW DELHI: Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen on Tuesday expressed skepticism about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's idea of secularism, asserting he would like to see "more action" in reaching out to the minorities. Sen also hit out at the Modi government over its "interference" in academia, saying it has never happened on this scale now and rued the "cuts" in the country's health and education budget. "The academic interferance that we see now has never really happened in India on this scale." 81-year-old Sen replied in the affirmative when asked whether he was still skeptical about Modi's secular credentials after his articulation of secularism as "India First" and "Sabka saath, sabka vikas" (harmony with all, development for all). "Yes, the short answer is yes," he told India Today TV channel During the 2014 Lok Sabha poll campaign, Sen had said he would not like to see the Gujarat Chief Minister as the country's Prime Minister. In controvesial comments, Sen was then quoted as saying, "As an Indian citizen I don't want Modi as my PM, he has not done enough to make the minorities feel safe." Sen said he stood by his reservations to Modi donning the mantle of prime ministership.
"There is no particular reason to change it because the fear that I had that some of the worst aspects of the previous government, neglect of basic education, neglect of healthcare, neglect of nourishment would continue and intensify which is actually happening, in the budget as cut in funds... And on top of that the problem of secularism would become more in-
tense under the 'hindutva rule'. And particularly given the Gujarat riots controversy, my confidence in his(Modi's) ability to be a great defender of secular values wasn't there," Sen said. Stating that he would like to see more action in terms of reaching out to the minorities, Sen said it should be a situation where there is an end to episodes like "ghar
wapsi", church attacks and giving preference to to "Hindus point of view" in the work of Indian Council of Historical research..." "Then I think that would be an appropriate claim( on upholding secularism," he said. Modi said it is the duty of the state to protect every religion not to allow things to happen like what happened in 2002 Gujarat riots.

Cracking entrance exams requires the kind of preparation which demands considerable amount of time. Students usually start sprucing themselves for such exams while they are in class XI and XII itself. For some, this preparation strategy hampers their school studies, while for those who are extraordinarily intelligent, this preparation route works wonders. There are also those who prefer taking a year off after they complete their schooling or college for preparing for competitive exams. Devoting one full year for entrance exam preparation has its own merits and demerits.

irstly, taking the decision to drop a year or not is tricky and requires students to take into consideration various factors. Aspirants need to set a goal and then decide the actions and timelines required to achieve these goals. The first step in this direction is to acquaint oneself with all the nitty-gritties of the exam like the pattern, syllabus, number of students who give the exam and qualify for the exam, etc. Next, they need to evaluate their preparation as per the syllabus and also analyse the pros and cons of dropping a year. graduated in BSC in 1996-97 from the Science College in Raipur, UP. Since I was a science student, my main subjects were Biology, English, Hindi and Botany. The architecture of my college was more of a British style. It looked very magnificent; a true institute of learning. I believe the influence of British architecture is particularly strong in India as you will see many courts, administrative buildings and railway stations designed in British architectural styles too. My first day in college was very exciting. I was not nervous since my friends from school had also got admission in the same college. I was rather looking forward to a new start, a new life! I must say I was excited. I knew this would open many new doors of opportunities for me. Luckily I was not ragged by anyone. In fact my seniors were extremely friendly and gave us a warm welcome. Eventually some of them even became my good friends. I am totally against ragging as I believe it destroys the physical and emotional confidence of the person. Today ragging has gone out of control and has become very dangerous. I am glad that strict action is being taken against ragging these days. The professors of my college were very engaging and co-operative but at the same time very strict. We had some excellent professors. Our college was known to be one of the most disciplined colleges. We had a fixed set of rules and the professors were also very strict about attendance. They were very enthusiastic about teaching and respectful towards students unless we were up to some pranks. Science fascinated me and I always found it very interesting. What I love the most about science is the experiments that we get to do in the lab. I just loved Biology and Botany and

investigating and finding out more about the cycles of so many different things in the world. I was very serious about my studies and was mostly busy finishing my science assignments. However I did have my share of enjoyment too as I had some great friends in college. I feel college is a really good place to network both with peers and faculty. The time that you spend in college is one of the most amazing times of your life and no matter where you go and what you become that is the time you would like to go back to. For any college student, their best hangout place is their college canteen because it is there where we spend most of our time eating, chatting with friends and finishing our assignments. I too have many memories associated with my college canteen. I still remember my favorite food items there. I also
remember hanging out at the bike parking place where our group would gather and discuss anything and everything in the world. Most of my friends had an army and political background. I remember travelling to college on my 2 wheeler (Bajaj Scooter - rarely seen today) but it was quite popular at that time. I did get an opportunity to stay in a hostel and it was altogether a very different and unique experience that has made me more disciplined and independent in life. I played quite a few pranks on my friends. I remember once, one of my colleagues was sound asleep and we carried him from the room to the bathroom without him realizing it. He was quite startled when he woke up wondering how he landed in the bathroom. I had my share of embarrassing moments too. I remember I was attending a lecture of this one particular professor who just stared at me for a while and then asked me in front of everyone if I had been bunking his
class and why he had not seen me often for his lectures. I was surprised that he noticed my absence. That moment was very embarrassing for me. My education has made me more disciplined and focused toward my goals. Education gives you a chance to experiment, learn and grow; and even if you fail, it teaches you to learn from it, make things better and again grow. Today our education system has started focusing on practical content as well as sports and other curricular activities like music, dance and drama along with theoretical subjects. I think the education system in India today is at par with systems abroad. My advice to students today is that education should be given the top most priority as it plays an important role in shaping your career and helps you explore and grow as a person. Education is a very important irrespective of the field you plan to work in. Some people feel that there is no need for education if you want to make a career in television or the media. But being educated does help you in any field. It makes you more aware and you can take better decisions if you are an educated person. I have finished my Bachelors course in BMM (advertising specialization) and wish to pursue MBA, can you help me choose a specialization in MBA. Dropping a year for an entrance exam Continued from pg 15 « It is of paramount importance to discuss the decision with teachers, family, well-wishers as well as those students who have cleared the exam. This will provide them with the necessary guidance required to decide how to proceed. One has to be very sure that dropping a year is the only option available to them. Once the decision has been made, there should be no looking back and no regrets. Consulting the right people, therefore, is very necessary to make the decision and not dilly-dally thereafter. Dropping a year means the student can get an ample amount of time to prepare the whole syllabus thoroughly and come up with appropriate strategies to deal with areas they are weaker in. The subjects or the topics which students lack interest in usually require more time and practice to get a command over. Hence, aspirants can be unperturbed about time issues, as they have a whole year at their disposal to focus on troublesome spots in the syllabus. With persistent practice, students are able to solve problems sans mistakes and that too at a good speed. Also, with a meticulous and fuss-free preparation, the confidence level of students gets elevated automatically.

Want to study MBA in the US
I have a B. Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering. I am currently working in a Multi-National Company since 2010. I wanted to study MBA in USA. Should I take the GMAT or GRE? —Rajneesh Shukla A few years ago, GMAT was the only test that was available to MBA applicants. However, nowadays most mainstream colleges also accept the GRE. You may consider the following before deciding on which to choose between the two: 1. GRE may be useful not only for MBA applications but also for MS applications. 2. GRE has less emphasis on grammar and logical reasoning based questions.
3. Since GMAT is Computer Adaptive Test, it is not possible to skip questions and return to them. In case of GRE you may skip a question and return to it later on. 4. Most students feel that the GRE Math is easier than the GMAT Math which has great emphasis on Quantitative Sections. 5. The GRE Vocabulary is more difficult compared to the GMAT vocabulary. It would be best if you take a full time GMAT and GRE score and assess not only your score but also the comfort level that you feel with both tests. I just finished my Grade 10 and will be commencing my Grade 11 in the IB Board. I am interested in studying journalism in the US. Which subjects would you recommend I should study during my 11th and 12th standard? —Dinkar Bhide
Journalism falls under the umbrella of Literature and Creative Writing. While some colleges may offer a specific major of Journalism, in other schools you may study Journalism under Literature, Creative Writing or Communication Studies. To study journalism/communication/creative writing, it is best to study English and Creative Writing at the high school level. You may also take AP English courses to strengthen your English skills. Apart from these, courses in foreign language, political science and history may also be helpful. In today’s digital times, knowledge of computers and blogging may be also helpful. Writing experiences in school newspaper, blogs, and other local publishers will also help you to learn to write on deadline, prepare thoughtful stories and develop interviewing skills.

However, during the first five months of this calendar year, India has achieved the 3rd position in the global steel production. However, per capita steel consumption is quite low, 60 kg as against the world average of 216 kg. The low consumption no doubt indicates huge growth potential for Indian steel industry. India has fixed a target of 300 MT production capacity by 2025 and the steel ministry is working out an action plan and strategies to achieve this target.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8667 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8519 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8476. Support (2) = 8441. Resistance (1) = 8553. Resistance (2) = 8596. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. Both these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Rate Cuts, Not Reforms Key To Immediate Recovery, Says BofA-ML Is not very hopeful of the pending GST and land acquisition reforms getting passed in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Expresses hope that RBI would cut rate by 25 basis points in its August 4 review meet
By A Business Reporter
T
he Indian markets are "overrating" the contribution of the pending GST and land acquisition reforms to the growth and it is rate cuts by RBI which actually hold the key for an immediate recovery, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research report yesterday. The global financial giant also said it is not very hopeful of these two reforms getting passed in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament given the "political controversies", while it expressed hope that RBI would cut its rate by 25 basis points in its August 4 review meet and by further 25 basis
points by early 2016. "In any case, we believe that lending rate cuts, rather than reforms, hold the key to an immediate cyclical recovery by say, end-2015. Reforms will support growth only over, say, five years and so, it does not really matter where they are legislated in this parliamentary session or next, reports PTI. "We continue to think that the market is overrating the contribution of either legislation to growth," the report said, while citing reply to a recent RTI query to state that just 8% of the projects stalled across India (66 of 804 stalled projects) were due to land acquisition issues. "Similarly, GST will raise GDP (not growth) by 1-2% over a few years," it said. According to BofA-ML, with inflation well on track to it's under 6% January 2016 target, a 50 basis point rate cut is likely. "We expect the RBI to cut 50 basis points by early 2016 with inflation well on track to its
CCFCs Set Up At Ports To Expedite Customs Clearance By A Business Reporter
T
he government has set up Customs Clearance and Facilitation Committees (CCFCs) at ports to ensure expeditious customs clearance of goods to improve ease of doing business for traders. "Ease of doing business: Customs Clearance and Facilitation Committees in ports bringing in systemic improvements. It's a recent initiative," Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das said in a tweet. It will facilitate trade at all the major customs seaports and airports. Welcoming the move, exporters body FIEO (Federation of Indian Export Organisations) said the move will help in getting faster clearances from different agencies."Traders take clearances from different agencies for exports and imports. These committees will help in resolving matters related to clearances. Any delay in this process impacts traders," FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai said.
'under' 6% January 2016 target," BofA-ML India economist Indranil Sen Gupta said in a research note. On the monsoon, the report said that cumulative seasonal rainfall is running at normal levels, despite 13% excess rains in June. "If rains are normal, we expect the RBI to cut 25 basis points on August 4," the research note added. The brokerage asked investors to track six event risks in July including IIP, inflation, rains, Parliament, results and the US Fed announcements, apart from the Greek drama.
monsoon in July and August, and pick-up in the pace of public investments and project execution. Developments in China and the European Union will impact the fortunes of companies that have significant revenues accruing from overseas subsidiaries, apart from exports.” The fragile state of rural consumption is reflected in volume and topline growth of companies heavily dependent on hinterland such as FMCG, tractors, and motorcycles. The FMCG sector reported just over 7% topline growth in the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2015. We do not foresee growth outpacing in the quarter ended June 30, 2015. Likewise, tractor manufacturers are expected to witness a 20% decline in sales volumes. Ajay Srinivasan, Director, CRISIL Research, said, the “Fall in realisations will squeeze the EBITDA margins of steel, sugar, and
pharmaceutical companies. For IT service providers, it could fall 90 bps as utilisation levels fall and pressure on realisations increase. For cement manufacturers, it will be a mixed bag -- margins of large companies could increase by 170 bps due to better pricing flexibility and operating efficiency, while that for midsized players are likely to slip 400 bps because of inability to pass on increase in freight cost amid timid volume growth.” On the positive side, surge in data revenues and control over operating expenses will boost EBITDA margins of telecom companies by ~120 bps. Margins of petrochemical players will increase over 400 bps following an improvement in polyester feedstock spreads, while those of road developers are likely to jump up 350-400 bps following an increase in operational BOT (build operate transfer) projects.

Three wounded as suicide bomber targets NATO forces in Kabul

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2015
K
abul: A Taliban suicide bomber targeted NATO forces in Kabul today, wounding three people, officials said, as the group step up attacks as part of their annual summer offensive. The blast in the southeast of the city is the third significant attack in the Afghan capital in the last three weeks and comes a week after another NATO convoy was hit by a suicide bomber on the road to the airport. NATO ended its combat mission
in the war-torn country in December, maintaining a smaller residual force for training, leaving Afghan troops and police to face their first "fighting season" battling the Taliban on their own. The Taliban claimed the attack in a message on their Twitter account. The street was strewn with rubble and broken glass after the blast, which left a white SUV badly damaged and on fire. Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi said the attack in the
southeastern part of the city was a suicide car bombing that wounded three people. Karimi said two of the wounded were civilians who suffered minor injuries and described the third as a "foreigner", but there was no confirmation of identity or nationality. "We can confirm an attack on coalition forces occurred in Kabul at approximately 11:30am.We are gathering further information on this incident," a spokesperson for the coalition told AFP adding that no for-
eign forces were killed in the attack. The attack comes a week after a Taliban suicide car bomber targeted a NATO military convoy on the main road to Kabul airport, killing at least two Afghan civilians and wounding around 17. A week before that, insurgents launched a brazen attack on the Afghan parliament. Police and soldiers beat back the attack with only two civilians killed, But the incident highlighted the Taliban's continuing ability to strike
25
even at the heart of the heavily-secured capital. NATO's combat mission formally ended in December after 13 years, but a small follow-up foreign force named Resolute Support has stayed on to train and support local security forces. Stretched on multiple fronts and facing record casualties, Afghan forces are struggling to rein in the militants even as the government makes repeated efforts to jumpstart peace negotiations.

fa (Russia): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive here tomorrow on a threeday visit to attend the BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summits, on the sidelines of which he is likely to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping. At the SCO Summit, India is expected to be accorded full membership of the six-nation grouping of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. India has till now only an Observer status in the grouping whose focus is on boosting connectivity, counter- terrorism cooperation, bolstering cooperation in energy sector, enhancing trade and dealing with drug trafficking. The summit of five-nation BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will see discussions on enhancing cooperation in the economic area. With the BRICS Development Bank already set up, the summit could
also look at the possibility of starting credit facility in local currency. The first head of the bank is noted Indian banker K V Kamath. Besides Modi and Xi, the BRICS Summit is being attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and South African President Jacob Zuma. "I expect positive outcomes in economic cooperation and cultural ties among the BRICS nations," Modi had said in a statement prior to his departure from Delhi yesterday. "The (BRICS) Summit last year was productive and I am sure we will build on the ground covered during the last Summit," he had said. He had also said that he will be meeting the leaders of BRICS nations individually and will be a part of the various interactions of BRICS leaders with captains of industry and leaders of other invited countries.

FILE - In this Aug. 20, 2014 file photo, Sakari Momoi, a Japanese retired educator, poses for a photo after receiving a certificate from Guinness World Records as Momoi was recognized as the world’s oldest living man, in Tokyo. An official at Saitama City said Tuesday, July 7, 2015 that Sakari Momoi died on Sunday at a nursing home in Tokyo. He was 112. AP/PTI
okyo: The world's oldest man Sakari Momoi has died at 112 of chronic kidney failure in Japan, officials said today. Momoi, the former high school principal and father of five children, died at a Tokyo hospital on Sunday where he had lived for many years. Fond of reading, especially Chinese poetry, Momoi had been named the oldest man by Guinness in August last year after a man born in Poland, who was then the world's oldest, died in June 2014 at the age of 111 in the US. "I want to live for about two more years," the supercentenarian had said when recognised as the world's oldest male. Momoi taught agricultural chemistry and was a principal at public high schools in Saitama and Fukushima prefectures, Kyodo news agency quoted municipal officials as saying. His death has come a day after the world's oldest living person celebrated her 116th birthday.

If you have wronged anyone be candid and express your regret. You may be drawn to someone who may not reciprocate your feelings. So, you must control yourself in order to avoid being hurt.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Negotiations could reach a dead end if you are not going to be flexible in discussions today. You stand to gain more with some compromises. Socially, this is an active and monetarily an expensive period. There may be many a get together and an important celebration to attend.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): You could be under heavy pressure at work. Refuse fresh offers until pending matters are successfully and quickly concluded in your favor. You will soon receive substantial profit for your efforts. Your accomplishments will be greatly lauded. Your priorities could be about work but your mate or beloved may not agree. Either find the time or face an irate mate.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Good news about work is likely. However, initial money may have to be put in before you can expect returns from your efforts. Travel for work is inevitable and will be well worth your efforts. Writing and correspondence will also take up a lot of your time. There could be some unexpected visitors from out of town. ONDON: Maria Sharapova made it a remarkable 20 victories from 23 grand slam quarterfinals but was pushed all the way at Wimbledon on Tuesday by feisty American Coco Vandeweghe before emerging a 63 6-7(3) 6-2 winner. The Russian fourth seed, Wimbledon champion as a 17-year-old in 2004 but a finalist only once since, had not dropped a set in this year's tournament coming into the last-eight contest. However, after a relatively untroubled first set on Centre Court, she lost a hugely entertaining second as the two identikit 6ft-plus blondes with matching white visors slugged it out. Garbine Muguruza's new-found love-affair with grass blossomed further as she became the first Spanish woman in 18 years to reach the Wimbledon semifinals with a 7-5 6-3 win over Timea Bacsinszky. The 21-year-old, who took instant dislike to the Maria Sharapova squeals with delight after passing a stern test posed by lush green surface after losing feisty American Coco Vandeweghe
her first match on it three years ago in Birmingham, found her comfort zone to outwit Bacsinszky. Muguruza, who was three years old when fellow Spaniard Aranxta-Sanchez Vicario reached the last four in 1997, pocketed the first set when her Swiss rival whipped a forehand wide. Defending champion Novak Djokovic survived a barrage from big-hitting Kevin Anderson to reach his seventh successive quarter-final. The top seed came from behind to win 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 64, 7-5 in a last-16 tie suspended due to bad light on Monday at the end of the fourth set. The Serb, who has now reached 25 Grand Slam quarter-finals in a row, goes on to face Croatia's US Open champion Marin Cilic for a place in the semi-finals. Djokovic will be the overwhelming favourite for that match on Wednesday -- he leads their head-to-head 12-0. ARDIFF: After what seems an even longer than usual ‘phoney war’, England and Australia will get down to the actual business of contesting the Ashes when the first Test in Cardiff starts on Wednesday. Australia may have won 5-0 on home soil when they last faced England in a Test series in 2013/14 but it is 14 years since they last tasted Ashes glory in Britain. Much of the build-up has focused on the vexed issue of ‘sledging’ or verbal abuse of opponents, which is something the International Cricket Council (ICC) are determined to eradicate from the sport. That Ranjan Madugalle, the ICC’s chief match referee, will be overseeing proceedings in Cardiff, suggests no let-up in the crackdown from the global governing body in

NOW, A FORMAL BODY TO RUN PRO-BOXING 30

EW DELHI: Amateur boxing in India might be in shambles but professional boxing is all set to get a massive fillip in the country with the launch of a governing body to facilitate pugilists, who wish to follow in Vijender Singh’s footsteps and try their luck in the lucrative circuit. Brainchild of former Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) Secretary General Brig. P K Muralidharan Raja, the body would be formally launched tomorrow and has

the backing of international promoters. “We would be facilitating the boxers who want to try their hand in the professional circuit. We would ensure financial security from our end besides offering them good deals with leading promoters. I will divulge the details of the plan tomorrow at the launch,” Raja told PTI. “The boxers will only have to focus on their training and bouts, nothing more. They need not worry about the other aspects after this,”
added the administrator, who was widely credited for a smooth-functioning IABF, which was terminated after his tenure ended due to manipulation in elections. Of the boxers on board even before a formal launch is the enigma called Gurcharan Singh, the Olympian who turned pro after going missing from a training camp in Czech Republic back in 2000. Gurcharan never returned to India after that and was declared a “deserter” by the Indian Army, his employer at
that time. Although 38 now, Gurcharan, who missed out on an Olympic medal after losing a close quarterfinal bout in 2000, would be an asset for the professional set-up in India, insisted Raja. “Gurcharan has told me that he would be on the first flight available the moment I call him next. He is going to be registered with us. Also there is Pradeep Sihag, who has been a long-time pro boxer from India,” said Raja. Sihag is a winner of the

EW DELHI: India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni turned 34 today and wishes poured in on the social media from the cricket fraternity all over the world. A veteran of 90 Tests and 265 ODIs, Dhoni has been one of the most successful Indian ODI captains. He retired from Test cricket in December last year. Leading India to two World Cup triumphs in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (50-over showpiece event), Dhoni was once termed as the man with the ‘midas touch’. BCCI was early to wish its captain a happy birthday. “Here’s wishing @msdhoni a very happy birthday! Have a #Royal one MS!,” tweeted BCCI. BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur also wished ‘Captain Cool’ separately on his twitter account, “@msdhoni Happy Birthday! :-) Have a lovely day & wonderful life! The International Cricket Council (ICC) was also quick to write on its twitter handle. “Happy Birthday to India’s most successful captain, @msdhoni!.” There were also wishes from across the border as former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik tweeted, “A very happy birthday and
many happy returns of the day @msdhoni - enjoy.” Dhoni’s IPL team Chennai Super Kings — with which he won two IPL titles and a Champions League crown under MSD — also joined in with a series of tweets. “The Leader, The Warrior! The King of the Super Kings! #HappyBirthdayDhoni,. Dhoni is one of the best things that happened to Indian Cricket! #HappyBirthdayDhoni.” Other IPL franchises like Mumbai Indian and Rajasthan Royals also wished the wicketkeeper batsman on the auspicious day.“Here’s wishing #TeamIndia ODI captain @msdhoni a happy birthday. #HBDDhoni,” tweeted MI. “Here’s wishing @msdhoni a very happy birthday! Have a #Royal one MS!,” RR wrote on their twitter page. India’s skipper for the Zimbabwe tour — Ajinkya Rahane — also wished his captain.“Happy birthday Mahi Bhai @msdhoni Have a great year Ahead...” the Rajasthan Royals batsman tweeted. Dhoni’s CSK and national teammates also joined in the bandwagon. “Happy birthday @msdhoni wishing you years ahead filled with love,
ALLEKELE: Younis Khan hit a brilliant unbeaten 171 as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the third Test today to win their first series on the island since 2006. The tourists achieved the sixth highest successful chase in history when they surpassed the target of 377 runs in the post-lunch session of the fifth day’s play in Pallekele, finishing on 382-3. Skipper Misbah-ul Haq made 59 not out, smashing the winning six off Jehan Mubarak to end his nation’s long winless streak in Sri Lanka where they lost the last three series in 2009, 2012 and 2014. It was the first time a visiting team had scored more than 300 runs in the fourth innings to win a Test on Sri Lankan soil. Pakistan’s highest successful chase before this had been the 315-9 they scored against Australia to win the Karachi Test way back in 1994. Younis, who made his 100th Test appearance in the second match, ended the game just 19 runs away from surpassing Javed Miandad’s tally of 8,832 runs to become Pakistan’s leading scorer in Tests. Pakistan added 25 runs to their overnight score when they lost the wicket of Shan Masood, who was stumped

Raja said the new professional body would provide a “fresh pathway” to the boxers, who are either struggling to make the first team in amateur or desire to end their careers in that format. “There is life beyond amateur and this will open up an new avenue for the boxers. Not everybody can go on to make it as big as Vijender did in the amateur and then command a good deal in the pro circuit.”

Eddie Leie’s super debut in SA easy win D
by Dinesh Chandimal off Tharindu Kaushal for 125. The Kuwait-born left-hander’s maiden Test century came during a third-wicket stand of 242 with Younis after Pakistan had been reduced to 13-2 on Monday afternoon. Sri Lanka claimed the second new ball as soon as it was due in the 80th over, but the seamers were unable to make an impression on the easypaced wicket. The 37-year-old Younis, who came to bat after the fall of the second wicket, stayed solid at one end during a seven-hour vigil in which he hit 18 boundaries. Younis’ five hundreds in
the fourth innings — in a career tally of 30 — are the most by any batsman. Misbah provided able support during a 127-run stand with Younis, mixing caution with aggression which fetched him eight fours and a six. Sri Lanka missed the experience of left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who was not selected, as young offspinner Kaushal was hammered for 153 runs in his 31 overs. Pakistan had won the first Test in Galle by 10 wickets and Sri Lanka took the second in Colombo by seven wickets.
HAKA: Eddie Leie made a memorable international debut as he and his spin partner Aaron Phangsio bowled South Africa to a seriesclinching 31-run victory in the second and final Twenty20 match against Bangladesh at Mirpur on Tuesday.Legspinner Leie, 28, and Phangsio took three wickets each as Bangladesh were bundled out for 138 in the final over of their innings, replying to South Africa's 169 for four wickets. Leie dismissed Soumya Sarkar (37) just when the batsman had started looking ominous and also sent back Sabbir Rahman and the set Mushfiqur Rahim off successive deliveries to end Bangladesh's hopes. He was adjudged man of the match with 3-16 in his international debut. Earlier a 95-run opening stand between Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers helped South Africa to post 169-4. De Kock topscored with 44 runs and de Villiers added 40 as the visitors made it a 2-0 sweep in the twomatch series.
Mayweather stripped of WBO welterweight belt W
ASHINGTON: Floyd Mayweather was Monday stripped by the World Boxing Organization of the welterweight world title he won by beating Manny Pacquiao two months ago. Mayweather had failed to meet the deadline last Friday for paying the $200,000 sanctioning fee required by the WBO after he took the belt from Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas in the richest fight of all time, earning a reported $220 million in the process. WBO rules require boxers to pay 3 percent of their purse to fight for a world title up to a maximum of $200,000. The rules also prohibit
WBO champions to hold any belts in any other weight divisions. Mayweather is currently also the WBC and WBA champion at junior middleweight (154lb), as well as at welterweight (147lb). A statement on the Puerto Rico-based sanctioning body’s website confirmed that Mayweather, regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, was no longer the WBO champion. “Mr. Mayweather, Jr. Failed to pay the $200,000.000 fee required of him as a participant of a WBO World Championship Contest,” said the statement.

Messi devastated by new defeat in final
B
UENOS AIRES: Lionel Messi has told of the pain of losing the Copa America final after the football superstar faced criticism in his native Argentina. Messi finally posted a statement on his facebook account late Monday having hidden his devastation at losing another major final since the 4-1 penalty shootout defeat by Chile on Saturday. “There’s nothing more painful in football than losing a final,” Messi said. “But I don’t want to leave it any longer to say thank you to everyone who has always supported us and continued to during the tough moments.” Messi, 28, has now lost
one World Cup and two Copa America finals and still has to win a major international event despite his success with Barcelona. Argentina, beaten 1-0 by Germany in last year’s World Cup final, have now not won a major title for 22 years. Messi left the pitch ashen faced after the latest defeat and unconfirmed Spanish media reports said he turned down the player of the tournament trophy. The trophy was withdrawn before the presentation ceremony in Santiago. Messi and the other Argentine stars were criticised by
the country’s media for their performance. Members of his family were also abused by Chilean fans at the match, according to Argentinian media. Some observers have warned that Messi could walk away from the national side.“One day this boy is going to get tired and will not want to come to play for the team,” former Argentine international Matias Almeyda, now coach of the Banfield club, told Fox Sports television.“He’s the best player in the world and he is not treated in the way he deserves,” Almeyda added. Messi had a brilliant season with the all-conquering Barcelona.

Those who earn quota, go to Olympics too: Narsingh By Chandraboli Mitra
N
EW DELHI: Injury to the more fancied Sushil Kumar has handed Narsingh Yadav the chance to fight for an Olympic berth and the youngster today said he would use all his might to ensure that he is picked ahead of the star grappler when their inevitable clash decides who goes to Rio next year. The 25-year-old Narsingh, who earned a berth for the World Championships after defeating Praveen Rana in 74kg category at the selection trials today, expressed confidence of making it to the Rio Olympics as well. As per rules, an Olympic berth is for the country concerned and not the wrestler who might have clinched it. And India’s men’s freestyle chief coach Kuldeep Malik and Sushil also maintained that the 74kg division quota would be eventually decided on current form before the Rio Olympics. But Narsingh has other
ideas. “While India would get a place in a particular category, but generally wrestlers who earn the country a place, go to the Olympics eventually. So let’s see what happens,” Narsingh told PTI. Malik said although both Sushil and Narsingh are excellent wrestlers, a contest would take place to decide who will represent India at the prestigious event. “We are confident that Narsingh will qualify for the 74kg slot at the upcoming World Championships.
I was under pressure to win today: Yogeshwar
N
EW DELHI: Star grappler Yogeshwar Dutt today heaved a sigh of relief after clinching a spot for the World Championships by beating Amit Kumar Dhankhar, who had gone to court last year against the Olympic medallist alleging favouritism. Dhankhar had sought court’s direction on the method of picking wrestlers for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He had
asked the court to issue directions for holding trials in the 65kg freestyle category fairly and to recommend the name of the best wrestler in that division to represent India in the Games. Yogeshwar today defeated Dhankhar 6-3 in the final of 65kg selection trails, to make it to the September 7-12 World Championships in Las Vegas, which will also be the first qualification tournament for next year’s Rio Olympics.“Yes, there was slight pressure on me to beat him. Although I was pretty confident of defeating him but in case, I was unlucky today, people would have got a chance to point fingers at me,” Yogeshwar told reporters. “There would also have been criticism against the WFI, who had chosen the team last time for the Commonwealth and Asian Games.”
