Violation of Human Rights: No protective gear provided to labourers constructing roads Mandatory safety standards ignored by BMC and the contractors By Philip Varghese

T

he Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated road repair and restoration work of more than 700 roads in Mumbai which is intended to be completed by next year for which a budgetary provision of nearly Rs 7,000 crores has been made by the BMC. Mumbaikars are witnessing daily traffic snarls due to the ongoing road restoration works but are patient in the hope of better and long lasting roads in the days to come, the contractor agencies deputed by the BMC to execute these projects are seemingly using machinery to concretize and asphalt the roads. People in Mumbai gather in awe when the roads are cut, excavated and restored using modern day machinery. But what they fail to observe is the pathetic state of labourers working for the contractor agency who are deprived of the basic mandatory provisions of insurance and entitled to the use of safety and protective gear. Rajesh Ingle, general secretary of Mumbai north east district Con-

Providing basic mandatory safety and protective gear like helmet, protective gloves, protective gum boots, specs and protective breathing masks to the laborers is mandatory for the contractor agency.

gress who has observed this dangerous pattern of work, has written to the BMC officials and other concerned authorities highlighting the plight of these workers. “While conducting the paving of roads and side stripes work for the contractor agency, laborers are not even being provided with basic safety and protective gear. During the final stage of road reinstatement process, the road is layered using hot mix of mastic asphalt which is carried around in huge mobile boilers. At a temperature of 200 degrees when the mastic is spilled upon the roads directly it is handled by unskilled laborers by using simple hand held tools! No helmet, no protective gloves, no protective gum boots, no specs and and no protective breathing masks are provided by the contractor agency. Laborers directly inhale the hazardous steam emitted from the mastic when it is spilled from the boiler. Further the 200 degree hot materials cause burns and sticks to the bodies of these laborers every time it is spilled on road for paving. Imagine a laborer barely handed inches away from the hot black material patting the fuming layer to ensure the corners are well finished! It was pitiful to discover that there was not even a small first aid box with the crew in case of a minor accident,” Ingle pointed out. He further added, “The ‘Mukadam’ (supervisor) was speechless when asked as to why the labourers were not being provided with basic safety gear even though it was mandatory. When asked about the first aid and insurance of the labourers, the supervisor claimed it was not a compulsion as all of them were daily wage labourers. The issue of providing insurance can be debated but providing basic mandatory safety and protective gear like helmets, protective gloves, protective gum boots, specs and protective breathing masks to the laborers is mandatory for the contractor agency. Failure to provide the same can be termed as sheer defiance of the ‘Indian Standards Safety Code for Constructions Involving Use of Hot Bituminous Material’ and can also be tried for ‘Human Rights Violation in the Unorganized Sector.’ But to start with, the BMC is the prime culprit as it has failed to compel the contractor agency to abide by the mandatory rules and regulations. Secondly one of the contractor agency ‘Relcon Infraprojects Limited’ which is executing the contract worth hundreds of crores in the suburbs is seemingly a habitual offender with no regard for the rule book and thus was blacklisted by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation. It is now for the BMC officials to ensure that the basic mandatory safety norms for labourers are followed or else the Human Rights Activists will hopefully be the only final respite.” Repeated attempts by this newspaper to contact officials of the Road Works Department of the BMC were futile. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Matcheswalla, well-known psychiatrist, who also works for Mumbai Police as a consulting counselor. Depression has a high risk of suicide. Since this is a very serious and common issue, there are various helplines these days. One of them being AASRA of Mumbai whose 24 hours hotline number is 27546669. Johnson Thomas, the director and co-founder of 'AASRA' said, “We receive around 50 to 60 calls per day. Most of the people who call have already planned their suicide and are just waiting for the right moment. We usually listen to all their problems and help them overcome their negative thoughts and see light in their life.” AASRA even gets calls from parents who are seeking advice on how to help their child to get over depression. More than just a bout of blues, depression is not something that one can overcome by 'pulling yourself together' or by 'sleeping it off'. Depression is a serious illness that requires long term treatment which includes medication, psychological therapy or both.

Mt Everest has shrunk due to quake THE devastating earthquake that has rocked Nepal not only killed thousands but may have also shrunk the height of the world's tallest peak -- Mount Everest -- by about 2.5 cm, according to analysis of satellite data. The first good view of the aftermath of Nepal's deadly earthquake from a satellite showed that a broad swath of ground near Kathmandu lifted vertically, by about 1 metre, which could explain why damage in the city was so severe. The data also indicated the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, got a wee bit shorter, Live Science reported. The new information comes from Europe's

Sentinel-1A radar satellite. Scientists are racing to interpret the Sentinel data, which were made available last week just hours after the satellite passed over Nepal. The devastating 7.9magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25 has claimed over 7,500 lives and injured another 16,390 people. The Home Ministry said that a total of 2,79,234 houses have been completely damaged and 2,37,068 partially damaged due to the quake.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2015

By Prashant Hamine

S

ix months after the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in the state, its allies – Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS), Shiv Sangram (SS) and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) – have begun to express displeasure about the BJP leadership giving them a raw deal in the power sharing arrangement. Speaking to news persons here yesterday at Mantralaya, SS leader and MLC Vinayak Mete disclosed that all the three allies who supported the BJP during the October 2014 assembly elections

have decided to meet on May 12 to decide on future course of action. Sources disclosed that SSS leader Sadabhau Khot is the most unhappy of the lot as he was hopeful of getting a MLC ticket in the recently held elections to the upper house of the state legislature. He and his party boss MP Raju Shetty have been agitating for enhanced remunerative prices for cotton and sugarcane growers in the state. Moreover, Shetty has been quite vocal in his criticism of the Fadnavis government as he feels that the government is not doing enough for farmers affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorms.

Mete who has been made the MLC on a BJP ticket is now angling for a ministerial berth in the state cabinet. His unease stems from the court of law striking down the reservation quota for Maratha community. Mahadev Jankar, who has now been made MLC from the BJP quota too was hoping to be inducted in the state cabinet, is also unhappy over the government not including the Dhangar (Sheperd) community in the Schedule Caste list. Both Mete and Jankar feel that without them ensuring the support of the Dhangar and Maratha community, the BJP would not have got 122 seats in the assembly elections.

Sunil Paraskar was not present in the court on Thursday, that's why the court didn't accept the charge sheet.” Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sunil Paraskar is accused of molesting and raping an upcoming model on December 1 and 7, 2013. Paraskar was

granted anticipatory bail by the Sessions court on August 12, 2014. The DIG was suspended by the home department and a departmental inquiry was conducted against him and he was found guilty of professional misconduct in the preliminary reports. The Shiv Sena MP had called for stripping of voting rights of the minority community By Prashant Hamine

T

he Election Commission of India (ECI) yesterday served a notice on Shiv Sena MP and editor of party mouthpiece Saamana, Sanjay Raut for his article printed on April 12, demanding that the minority community be stripped of its voting rights. The ECI served the notice acting on the complaint filed by Shakeel Qureshi from Pune who argued that Raut's statement which was republished in many other newspapers and shown on many television channels was prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and was likely to cause disharmony, feeling of enmity, hatred and ill-will among the people. He has also prayed that the recognition of the Shiv Sena be canceled. The ECI in its two paged order, backed by clippings of the Saamana article and its translation refers to the two assembly by-elections to Bandra (east) and Tasgaon Kavathe Mahankal which were underway when the said article appeared in the party mouthpiece. Referring to the fact that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was in force in the said constituencies from March 10, it

argued that as per provisions of the MCC “no party or candidate shall indulge in any activity which may aggravate the existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic.” The said provisions further provides that all parties and candidates shall avoid scrupulously all activities which are corrupt practices and offences under the election law. The ECI in its notice pointed out that as per section 153 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language is an offence. Citing the clippings of his article the ECI has notified Raut that prima facie it is of the opinion that he has violated the provisions of the MCC by making such statements. The ECI has given time till May 11, 1 pm for Raut to respond. It adds that in case of failure to respond to the notice, the ECI shall take it's decision without making any further reference to him.

SMS from bank helps to solve Rs.1.5 lakh theft case, teen held By Suresh Golani

A

n sms from the bank confirming of a high value cash deposit helped cops solve a theft case in Bhayandar. The 20-year-old girl who stole Rs.1.5 lakh cash from her neighbour's apartment in the Shiv-Sena Lane area of Bhayandar (west) has been arrested and booked under sections 454 and 380 of the IPC. According to the police the complainant used to give his house keys to her nieghbour. However the accused (name withheld) be-

trayed their trust and stole Rs.1.5 lakh cash from the house last week. Following a complaint, the Bhayandar police started investigations into the case. “Although the girl was under the scanner of investigations right from the beginning, an sms from her bank confirming a high value cash deposit exposed her misdoing,” said Senior Police Inspector Bhaskar Pukle. While the accused has confessed to the crime, the entire stolen cash has also been recovered, police said. PSI Kranti Patil is investigating the case.

ACB nabs BMC clerk while accepting bribe By Tariq Khan

T

he state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has nabbed a BMC clerk Keshav Narayan Pawar (50) red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000 from a contractor for clearing his pending bills. The accused has been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) on Wednesday. ACB sources told ADC, “Every officer from

BMC M-east ward has hired an agent and through them they are taking bribes. Officers do not entertain local people, but comply when the agents approach them since they get bribes. This makes is difficult for us to catch them red-handed and build a watertight case against them. The people should shun agents and if any officers demand bribe they should inform us immediately so that we can arrest them after catching them redhanded.”

Duo who stole bikes from parking lots held By Suresh Golani

T

he next time you park your bike at a paid parking lot relying on the attendant for its safety, beware your vehicle could still be stolen. The Navghar police have arrested two people who stole bikes from authorised Pay-and-Park units in

Bhayandar. Armed with CCTV footages of a recent bike theft reported from the railway station premises, a police team led by PI (Crime) Suresh Gengje intensified patrolling and activated their informer network which led to the arrest of Tushar Jadhav and Pavan Sharma. The grabs of the footages

clearly show the duo’s work with great finesse as nobody, including the attendant got a whiff of their handiwork, police said. Booked under sections 379 of the Indian Penal Code, the duo have confessed to the crime and the police have recovered two bikes from their possession. Further investigation is on.

his other workers told him that door of the bathroom is locked since long. Police was informed assuming that someone has locked up inside for mischief, but when plank above the door was removed Habib’s body was found after which they searched for his address and went to inform his family, but they found Faima’s body. Habib’s employer told police that he used to be absent regularly and he called some time ago from his village asking for help after which he was called to Mumbai and given a job.

Now, Bhayandar on radar of bike-borne bag snatchers By Suresh Golani

A

fter striking at targets at isolated locations, the notorious bike borne bag snatchers seem to have shifted their operations to busy and crowded spots, taking the victim by surprise. Two separate incidents were reported in as many days in the city. In the first case, two bike borne miscreants snatched a bag containing Rs.6.5 lakh cash from Krishna Choudhary (18) near the railway station. The second incident has been reported near the flyover bridge where a 56year-old woman, Shashikala Agarwal, was waiting for an auto-rickshaw when two unidentified men on a bike drove close to her, snatched her handbag and sped off. The bag contained Rs.1 lakh cash. An on-duty patrolling team made an unsuccessful attempt to chase down the culprits. In both the cases the victims had stepped out of banks after withdrawing the cash, raising a doubt that the bikers had information about the monetary transactions. A case under section 392 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. PSI Chavhan is carrying out further investigations.

cially on special grounds like medical, weddings or any other kind of emergency. They should be relieved immediately.” Besides, an official circular issued to all senior officers this week, advises them that they should behave well with their juniors, listen to their grievances and try to sort out their problems, the DCP added. It may be recalled that on Saturday night, senior inspector (SPI) Vilas Joshi, was shot by his junior, assistant sub inspector (ASI) Dilip Shikre following a leave related argument. Joshi succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati hospital early on Sunday.

CCFI files criminal case against Greenpeace India By A Staff Reporter

C

rop Care Federation of India (CCFI) is a registered association in India representing bonafide interests of domestic manufacturers and exporters of agrochemicals. We have enviable track record of exposing false and fabricated pesticide analysis report produced by foreign funded environmental activists organisations. From a chronically food shortage country and a country with millions of starving people in 1960s, India has become the second largest agri producer in the world now, thanks to adoption of modern scientific inputs and practices by our farmers. India’s agricultural scientists, extension officers, and agri input industry have played a commendable role in advancing our agriculture to be among the top in the world. India is now a net exporter in agriculture. In 2013-14, India’s agricultural exports touched a record $44 bn. India ranks among the top 10 food exporting countries in the world. Foreign funded activists work covertly to tarnish the image of Indian agriculture. India’s farm exports are growing at a compounded annual growth of over 21 percent. The ulterior aim of these foreign funded activists is to discredit and tarnish the image of Indian farm products and make us lose our competitiveness. According to a press release issued by Rajju Shroff, Chairman of the Crop Care Federation of India, “In August 2014, Greenpeace India released a self sponsored study report directly to the popular media titled “Trouble Brewing: Pesticide Residues in Tea Sample” that claimed to have found 34 different pesticides in tea samples taken from the retail markets in India and analysed at an undisclosed laboratory in Europe. The report did not reveal the test protocol followed for the analysis and the raw data including chromatograms pertaining to the analysis for expert peer review in India. All these go against the established norms. The motive of Greenpeace India is malicious. It is to build public pressure on Indian government and Indian tea industry by spreading inscrutable allegations. It is to tarnish the image of Indian agriculture and Indian economy. Indian tea is among the top exported commodities. It is necessary to know

all the raw data behind the alleged analytical findings reported by Greenpeace in the press. A careful scrutiny of the underlying data would alone bring out whether the study was properly designed or conducted and if there were any methodological improprieties involved. Disclosure of complete raw data would not only benefit the stakeholders in India but also the public at large.” It further stated, “It causes greater prejudice to stakeholders and general public in India to be forced to accept the Greenpeace findings at the face value without the underlying laboratory data. The disclosure of full raw data would alone achieve the fair play and equal justice. The raw data should be made available to our experts who are skilled and perceptive. Greenpeace India has no business whatsoever to analyze our food samples surreptitiously, refuse to divulge raw data and resort to blackmailing tactics. Article 51-A (h) of the Indian Constitution provides, inter alia, it shall be the fundamental duty of every citizen of India to “develop scientific temper and spirit of inquiry”. The “scientific” temper refers to an attitude, which involves application of scientific principles and logic without bias and errors. According to India’s Ministry of Law and Justice the “scientific temper” in the Article 51-A(h) requires thirst for knowledge and urge to research for facts and zeal for setting things right. The fundamental duty to develop scientific temper and spirit of inquiry is applicable to all citizens. We have in fact exercised this fundamental duty when we sought the raw data behind the mysterious analysis by Greenpeace in an unknown laboratory in Europe. We have a fundamental duty u/s 51-A (h) of Indian Constitution to seek all laboratory information to ascertain the veracity of the wild claims made by Greenpeace. CCFI therefore sent legal notice on Sept 3, 2014 to Greenpeace India seeking raw data in their self sponsored residue analysis (in an undisclosed laboratory in Europe). But the Greenpeace refused to make the raw data available to us for expert peer review. In their response they have bluntly stated ““they are under no obligation to furnish the copies of the raw data” and that CCFI “have no right to any information in addition to what is provided in the (published) report.

orld Health Organization (WHO) is celebrating World Thalassemia Day on Friday for which the theme is ‘Enhancing partnership towards patient - centred health systems: Good health adds life to years!’ that highlights the need to cater different health systems towards patient’s needs and requirements. Vinay Shetty, Vice President of Think Foundation NGO said they will be organising six blood donation camps to celebrate the occasion. “While our NGO organises events every Saturday an event in Day Care centres for thalassemia children, we will also be organising the blood donation campaigns on Friday. It is important that our youngsters get a minority thalassemia check up done at least once. I also request that people donate blood whenever they get the chance to do it,” said Shetty. Dr. Suleman Merchant, Dean of Sion Hospital said

youngsters should do mandatory health check ups. “While the testing and treatment of the disorder had evolved in our country, mandatory health checks ups are not done. Such check ups should be done by people who are getting married so that they may know if they have thalassemia minority in their bodies. It is to ensure that they know if their children can get thalassemia majority,” said Dr. Merchant. Dr. Mukesh Desai, a hematologist associated with Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital at Vile Parle, has been counseling and treating many such patients in Mumbai. “I counsel around 100-200 thalassemia

patients every year. While children with the age of 6 months to 4 years have to undergo blood transfusion, the curative measure for them would be a bone marrow transplant. Such transplants are costly but we have many organisations in Mumbai who can help gather funds for poor patients,” said Dr Desai. Thalassemia is a form of inherited recessive blood disorder characterized by abnormal formation of hemoglobin. According to the statistics of the Indian Red Cross Society, in India thalassemia majorly affects over 1, 00,000 people and over 8,000 reported thalassemia births take place every year.

Early detection of ovarian cancer is crucial for women

By Abhishek Vissapragada

O

n Friday, World Ovarian Cancer Day is being celebrated around the world. Started in 2013, this event is conducted every year on May 8 to highlight the need of tackling ovarian cancer and to bring its awareness among women. Dr. Meghal Sanghvi, consultant oncosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai Central, said that women

come to them for treatment at late stages. “There are four stages of ovarian cancer and the third and fourth stages are fatal ones. We have patients who have come to us for treatment during these stages which is very late. Although we have treated some patients even at the fourth stage through chemotherapy and given them a few years to live, we recommend women to do health check ups every year,”

said Dr. Sanghvi. Dr. Vinita Salvi, Consultant Gynecologist at Global Hospitals, Mumbai said that it is not easy to know the symptoms of the cancer. “At present, it is difficult to know the symptoms of the cancer. Women normally brush off the pains in their abdomen and stomach as any normal pain. What I would recommend to them is to get a pelvic ultrasound test done and also visit a gynecologist to ensure that it is detected,” said Dr. Salvi. The chances of survival for ovarian cancer is only 45 per cent compared to 89 per cent in breast cancer patients according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The deadly cancer is also responsible for over 1,40,000 women deaths each year around the globe.

Imperative need of revisiting the thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore

ilm actor Salman Khan must be thankful that the hit and run case against him went on for as many as 13 years. He was free all this time and he could carry on with his professional work. He could not have been unaware he had ran over some sleeping poor folks. He did not bother to find out what had happened to them. He should have got out of his car, and attended to the wounded. If he had called the police immediately, he could have built a good case for himself. He did not do that. He ran away from the scene and hid himself. He should have taken the injured to hospital in his car. Finally, whatever chance he had was torn to bits when he got his driver to say he the driver was at the wheel. This admission sounded so unconvincing. It was clear he had carried out a cover-up operation. That he was guilty was becoming increasingly clear. He was under the influence of liquor. He must have had blurred vision. As he drove blindly, a tragedy was waiting to happen. Salman Khan is a well-known, popular person. He is getting a lot of sympathy. His fans are saying that existing laws should not apply in his case. If instead of Salman, the accused was someone else, even a 10year sentence would have been held appropriate.

NDIA is often subjected to socio-political challenges from within. The root cause of the ordeals arises from an essential failure to keep the harmonious Indian social structure undisturbed and also from the various instances of failing to adhere to the requisite parameters of duties and responsibilities in governance, political dynamics, and in the process of drawing up and implementing sundry programmes, for the benefit of the country. In times of success and dilemmas, noble principles are often espoused, and the contributions of towering personalities, identified with India, are reminisced. Among those, whose work and legacy have enriched India and the wider world comprehensively, Rabindranath Tagore – born in 1861 and passed away in 1941, a Nobel-laureate poetphilosopher, and also referred to as ‘Gurudev’ — conspicuously occupies an exalted position. His views on Indian society, politics, and the path to nation-building, merits an earnest contemplation on the occasion of his birth anniversary, celebrated on May 9. Tagore’s vast arrays of laudable works are an outcome of an illustrious combination of wealth, learning, vision, responsibility and efficacy in a human character. As a student in a school in Kolkata — then called Calcutta — young Tagore was overcome with ennui and dissatisfaction. What dissatisfied him most was the claustrophobic academic environment, where pupils were taught essentially to memorize a particular curriculum to be able to ably blurt it out on the answer sheets of the examinations. The endeavour to hone critical evaluation skills and independent thought along with the requisite tasks of inculcating a sense of discipline, responsibility, and hard work in students was perceptibly absent. He refused to go to school as he felt hemmed in by the narrow reach of quotidian academics. A rigorous and comprehensive educational curriculum, which included musical training and physical exercises, and was administered by an array of teachers, was organized for him at his residence in Calcutta. The outcome was a success. Rabindranath Tagore was ready to take the first steps which would ultimately create a unique and far-reaching imprint upon human society.

Visva Bharati University In the midst of rural Bengal, he set up his academy — which eventually metamorphosed into the Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan — where an earnest education was to be imparted in the midst of the richness and open spaces of nature. His vision was to make the university a place for learning with earnest interactions across the world, where students and teachers would interact meaningfully with each other, and where students would have an opportunity to meet their educational needs by way of general education and pursue a field or fields of study of special interest. Sadly, Visva Bharati

University is no longer among the preferred destinations for most earnest students, but some departments are still creditable. Additionally, Tagore’s rich legacy has made Visva Bharati and Shantiniketan as worthy places to visit for people in India and across the world; the number of tourists are steadily increasing with the passage of years, and it is a fervent hope that Visva Bharati will once again become a famed university in future. In contemporary India, the universities are gradually being encouraged to develop a semester-based system with scope for various courses, to be able to cater better to respective student’s interests. After long years of neglect, there has been some noticeable appreciation of trying to inculcate critical, independent thinking within the guidelines of higher educational curriculum in India.

BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen Tagore’s vision bears increasing relevance in preparing the country’s educational curriculum to enhance its efficacy and success. Indian politics today is characterized more by raucous, acrimonious, self-defeating, and violent outbursts than by fruitful public debates and a striving for effective harmony on basic acceptable principles among various political parties. But, a principal reason for this degeneration is that individuals often get themselves involved in party politics without completing their basic educational requirements. In many colleges, dabbling in active politics has become a bane. This is so because those getting themselves involved in politics by neglecting education are doing a disservice to politics itself. Politics is essentially the dynamics of managing and contributing to the ‘polity’ or society. It could be through political governance, participation in political parties, rising to high levels of professional accomplishment, bona fide entrepreneurship, or effective accomplishment of any other professional occupation. All contribute in some way or the other to the ‘polity’. Compromising the import of knowledge and skills and exclusively involving oneself with political parties is a fertile ground for inviting interpolitical party clashes and contributing to the disrepute of the entire political process. The dangers of such a possibility of public affairs in India was explicitly expressed by Tagore

HEN do you appreciate someone? Don’t you appreciate them when they do something that is unusual, not ordinary, something that is not their nature? When a wicked person fails to cause problems, you appreciate them. Or when someone you think is not good performs a good deed, you appreciate them. When a good person does something extraordinary, you appreciate them. If a child makes you a cup of tea, you appreciate it, but if a mother made the same cup

who made his displeasure and repulsion felt in no uncertain terms to those political leaders of his time who encouraged young men and women to join in politics to the detriment of education and constructive endeavours.

Against Gandhi’s call Tagore was flatly against Mahatma Gandhi’s call to students to boycott schools and colleges in the cause of national freedom movement, and said so to him in no uncertain terms. Tagore reasoned that having passion and concern for Independence was undoubtedly a noble aim, but what contribution towards nation-building would those involved make if they were to neglect their education? They would be most susceptible to manipulation and misguidance by others and that could be calamitous for society. The Mahatma had no appropriate answers to this. On another occasion, while discussing about communal unity, Tagore cautioned Gandhi not to remain smug from the superficial Hindu-Muslim unity, which Gandhi was trying to build up to withstand the batons and bullets of the police in British-ruled India. Unity among communities could only be effectively attained if people began to study the texts and philosophy of the religions and ideologies of one another, and consequently developed an understanding and appreciation of various beliefs and their attendant cultures, practices, and their necessity for an essential unity with each other, ecumenically and in appropriate contexts. And even then it would take a significant time for the foundations inter-religious unity to strengthen to make communal conflicts tangibly a thing of the past. The vicious riots in the aftermath of Independence and partition of the country, and the subsequent several instances of the flaring up of communal tensions in India, through political and religious instigation or otherwise, are an attestation of the increasing validity of Tagore’s viewpoints. Rabindranath Tagore ceaselessly and wisely emphasized on the imperative of undertaking thoughtful and constructive work for the attainment of human well being and prosperity. Although India is a relatively stable parliamentary democracy, it still contains manifests several shortcomings by way of economic dissatisfactions, social misunderstandings, socio-political appeasement, and the needlessly demeaning views communities or political parties occasionally tend to cast against each other. Tagore’s phenomenal works, manifested through numerous novels, musical compositions, plays, poems, and several other essays comprised of topics on society, politics, environment, philosophy, scientific discussions, religion, travelogues, among others, are an invaluable palliative for the challenges and conflicts often witnessed in India and over the world. someone for something, you imply that it is not the way they usually are. Question: “What if a person wants to be appreciated?” That means that the act is not in their nature, and that is why they want to be appreciated. If it is not coming from their nature, it is an imposed act. So when you appreciate someone you imply that it is not their nature, that it is not the way they usually are. It is a rare act or quality. DESPITE taking around 13 years to handover a judgement in 2002 hitand-run case, it has finally came out without reprieve for the matinee idol Salman Khan, who has been sentenced to five years in jail. He was held guilty of all eight charges in the case. Anyway, justice was delayed but not denied in the end. Somehow, the judge was lenient in delivering the judgement and thus reduced the quantum of punishment to 5 years, keeping in view of his good work for the poor and the downtrodden people in the city of Mumbai. He has been convicted under Section 304(2) of the IPC. The punishment handed over to the film actor is a landmark judgement and the judge has considered both pros and cons before announcing 5-year-jail term to the heartthrob of Bollywood cinema. —S. Abhishek Ramaswamy, Vashi

JUSTICE delayed is just denied but some solace to the family of a poor footpath dwellers who were mauled by the celebrity, as Salman Khan is sentenced to 5-year imprisonment after 13 years of hitand-run case. While we feel sorry for Salman Khan because he is a celebrity but nobody is talking about the pain of the family who lost their near and dear ones in a shocking case of drink and drive. The argument that Salman Khan should be let off because he does a lot for charity was 'ridiculous'. That does not mean he can drink and kill fellow human beings. The judge deserve applause for convicting him at a time when many thought he would get away with milder sentence. The judgement would now deter people who drink and drive. Salman Khan's humanitarian work is well known to all of us and I am sure the actor regrets the incident but it was too late for him to repent. The least Salman Khan's family can now do is to monetarily support the victims family. —S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

I was shocked to note that most of English news channels, overtly or covertly, defamed Bombay High Court that granted two-day interim bail to Salman Khan, who was found guilty in 2002 hit-n-run case. The decision of justice Abhay Thipsay, who worked under the ambit of law, to grant interim bail to Salman Khan was seen as an eye-sore for most electronic media scribes. Justice delayed, denied or both?

JUSTICE has at last been given after so many years. It's good that the Hon'ble Magistrate did not accept the fairy tale given by the defence lawyer to save Salman Khan. I am glad the protracted 2002 hitand-run case has drawn to a close with the court finding Salman Khan guilt. It is obvious the driver Ashok Singh has been heavily bribed to confess to a crime he did not commit to save the skin of the arrogant Bollywood star. They were rushed to a hospital around 7pm after they fainted and were later taken to Alapuzha Medical College, where one of them died, the police said. The condition of the three hospitalised athletes was serious with two of them put on pacemakers. The next 48 hours will be crucial. "On behalf of the Sports Minister, I can assure that if anything is found wanting or if anybody is at fault, the strictest of action will be taken," he asserted. "It is the most shocking and tragic incident in the history of SAI, as far as I can remember." Alapuzha District Collector N Padmakumar, who visited the athletes undergoing treatment at the medical college hospital, said a detailed enquiry would be conducted into the incident. A relative of Aparna, who died yesterday, alleged that the inmates of the SAI hostel were being physically tortured. "The girl was hit by her coach two days ago with an oar due to which she could not sit or stand", he alleged. Kerala sports minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the state Sports secretary will probe the incident. The government also announced financial help to the family of the deceased, and said expenses of those undergoing treatment

The sports fraternity expressed shock at the incident and called for a detailed probe into what led to the unfortunate turn of events. Ashwini Nachappa, a former athlete and founding member of Clean Sports India -- a movement for corruption-free sports in India, termed the incident as extremely unfortunate and said that it should be investigated properly. Meanwhile, protesting against the incident, activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of (CPI(M), took out a march. Alapuzha District Collector N Padmakumar told PTI that the four girls were brought to the hospital after 9pm yesterday, by which time the poison had entered their blood. "We have to keep our fingers crossed. We cannot say that the three - aged 14, 16 and 17 - have overcome the crisis. It will take 2-3 days to know", he said. "The girls have been put on medication to keep up their potassium level and two of them have been put on pacemakers". The girls were conscious when brought in, he said, adding that the youngest had consumed only one fruit and her condition was better. There was also a possibility of the poison entering the muscles, he said.

headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu on Thursday which did not give it an urgent hearing on the ground that the issue will come before the High Court. On Wednesday, soon after the conviction, Salman's lawyer had moved the High Court which granted him interim bail for two days since he had not been given a detailed, reasoned copy of the verdict on the basis of which his appeal would be heard. Later in the evening, trial court Judge D.W. Deshpande handed over a 240-page copy of the judgement to Salman. “Since the appellant was on bail throughout the trial and since a copy of the judgement of conviction has not yet been furnished to him, it would be proper to protect the appellant for some time in the interest of justice,” Justice Thipsay observed while granting him interim bail till May 8. His lawyers Harish Salve and Srikant Shivade would argue his bail plea in the absence of the actor as he was not required to be present under the law. Seeking bail until the time his appeal has been finally heard and disposed of, Salman has said the court may grant him liberty on such conditions as it deems fit. He said he had never misused any bail conditions imposed on him by the court in the past.

The Bombay High Court board had listed Salman's appeal for admission in the courtroom of Justice Abhay Thipsay, who had on Wednesday granted him an interim bail for two days. It will be recalled that the actor was convicted by the Sessions Court in South Mumbai and sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment on various charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, besides penal provisions under Motor Vehicles Act and other laws. Interestingly, another petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday complaining against the order of the Bombay High Court granting two-day interim bail to Salman Khan in this case, immediately after the Sessions Court had sentenced him to five years imprisonment. The plea was mentioned before a bench

What Viking way of life will you be privy to at PVR LIVE? Anindra Siqueira finds out

VR Live brings you an exhibition of Viking artifacts that focus on the period when the Vikings were at their most powerful — from the late 8th century to the early 11th century. Vikings: Life and Legend will give you an exclusive peek into the British Museum’s major exhibition on the Vikings, with expert views on the Viking way of life, including their beliefs, burial practices, language, ships and swords. Dharmesh Datta, vice president and head of alternate content at PVR Limited, tells us, “PVR is delighted to bring back the aura of legends with the screening of Vikings from the British Museum. This spectacular show of treasures is a treat for the eye. During this era, the extraordinary Viking expansion from the Scandinavian homelands created a cultural network from the Caspian Sea to the North Atlantic and from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean. The broadcast also explores how — through our languages, our poetry, our names, place names, and even our DNA — so many of us are connected across time to the Vikings.” For tickets visit PVR Cinemas’ website or BookMyShow.com. Their prices start from `10,500, but if you are looking to make a one-off purchase, Goodearth.in is the place to check out.

orporate Collars is a brand that offers custom-made clothing. Don’t let the name fool you; their clothing isn’t just for top-level executives — they tell me that they are also well versed in the art of stitching attire for weddings, for which they even offer a doorstep service. But, we’ll get to that later. The Corporate Collars store in BKC is located in a building called The Capital, which is right next to a Starbucks outlet, making it hard to miss. The store is designed well, making the most of a tight space. Situated literally on the corner of the modern commercial building, space is at a premium, and part of the building actually overhangs the store. You may not notice it at first, but once you realise where you are, with the edge of a building hanging over you, the feeling is both intriguing and scary. They have a fairly wide range of material, neatly stacked and arranged in categories that match the clothing it is to become — shirts, trousers, jackets and suits. And they

Corporate Collars on Wheels The brand also has a van — designed by the iconic Dilip Chabria — which functions as a portable version of their store. I didn’t get the chance to see the van, but I’m told that it has everything the store does, in terms of fabrics and a tailor to take measurements. So, if you need to cater for clothing for a large wedding party, you can avail of the brand’s service. And, it doesn’t matter whether you drive your family down or call the van over, because they peg the same time frame for delivery of your finished custom-made clothing. use only imported fabric, including Italian and English wools. business as they have a good selection of designs and patterns to choose from. When it comes to custom-made clothing, I’m told that they can work from practically any design inspiration, whether it’s from a catalogue or even from a photograph, which is always a bonus. They also have an interesting set of collar designs mounted on the wall — the long neck, the two-button and the buttoned-down. And, in case you were wondering, they also do traditional Indian outfits such as bandhgalas and bandhis. What I found the most interesting was their turnaround time. They’ll deliver a shirt and trouser in just four days (with a fitting a day or two after you pick out what you want) and a suit and blazer in just about a week. They’ll even have two fittings sessions if necessary. If you’re looking to add at least one quality piece of custom-fitted clothing to your wardrobe, it will be a good idea to pop in to Corporate Collars.

A

succulent. While my dining companion continued to rave about the burger, I was busy falling in love with their Mediterranean Sautéed Shrimp (`390). My mouth still waters at the mere memory of this dish. The flavours were well-balanced and it’s a must-try dish! Moving on to the main course, we tried the Black Olives & Parmesan Tortellini (`425). Up to this point, we had succumbed to the idea that everything at Café D’Wine was going to be nothing less than perfect, which was right in the case of the pasta as well. You cannot miss out on this delectable treat! Even after stuffing ourselves with so much food, we couldn’t help but try their IL Diavalo pizza (`510). The pizza was topped with pepperoni, bacon and chicken sausages and really was a meat-y delight! Every dining experience is incomplete without trying dessert. So, we weren’t going to leave the café without trying their chef’s special, Flourless Chocolate Cake with Ice-cream (`220). The cake was melt-in-the-mouth soft and not sickeningly sweet. We were utterly satisfied! To sum it up, Café D’Wine proved to be an absolute treat. The staff is hospitable, the service is quick and the place is pretty affordable. They also have bell hours every day, when you can buy domestic wine bottles at the MRP. I think we’ve given you enough reasons to visit this café — don’t forget to drop by!

s the name suggests, Café D’Wine offers a wide variety of wine to choose from — domestic as well as international. From Italy, France and Chile to Portugal and Argentina, you will find wines from various countries at this casual café. Situated in Khar, Café D’Wine is located quite centrally and isn’t difficult to spot. But, the space they’ve acquired is pretty small, so we aren’t completely sure whether you’ll find it in a jiffy. As soon as I entered the place, the illustrious wine cellar caught my attention. The café is brightly lit and the extensive use of wood in their interiors enhances the café’s charming appeal. We began our dining experience by ordering two drinks — Rose Sangria (`360) and Rose by Vallone (`275). My dinner companion loves white wine, and she was pretty overwhelmed after trying Rose by Vallone. She just couldn’t stop gushing about it! I, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed my sangria, so much so that I ordered another. It wasn’t too potent and had the perfect blend of wine and fruits. Frankly speaking, we weren’t expecting much from the food at Café D’Wine. But, we were pleasantly surprised by the first dish that we ordered — the Couscous Salad (`250). The salad was delicious and light, so much so that I gobbled it up in minutes. Even my dining companion, who isn’t a huge fan of salads, loved it. Don’t leave Café D’Wine without trying this dish. Next, we tried their Red Bean Hummus with Pita Bread (`300). The hummus had the perfect texture and the bread was soft — just like it should be. We also tried their Baby Lamb Burger (`450) — bite-sized burgers that were like mini bites of heaven. The lamb patty was perfectly cooked and

ave you ever been to a restaurant that is so charming that you never want to leave? That’s how I felt when I was walking out of The Nutcracker! This tiny eatery is one of the latest additions to the quaint cafes that dot Mumbai, and would be easy to miss but for the cute yellow sign above it. The exteriors resemble cute cottages in France, complete with a window above the door lined with flower pots. Petite people like myself will find the door a bit heavy, but who can complain when it opens to such charming interiors. After a cool drink of exorbitantly priced mineral water (`110), we tried an Oreo Milkshake (`180), Salted Caramel & Banana Smoothie (`180) and Passion Fruit & Basil Cooler (`170) — all of which were refreshing. We then began our meal with a delicious Asian Salad (`270) — an assortment of sliced vegetables mixed in chilli dressing and garnished with crunchy peanuts, which was enough to feed three. Hummus & Pita bread (`200) accompanied the salad — thick, smooth and

creamy, with just a hint of paprika as garnish. The Warm Lebanese Sandwich (`290), with felafel, salad and pickle along with mayonnaise and spicy harissa, failed to impress me, but I then tried the Salli Eggs (`150), a mouthwatering preparation of eggs, topped with delicious potato threads, and served with bread. While the Bagel & Cream Cheese (`280) had way too much cream cheese, the Buttermilk Pancakes (`235) and their special, Black Bean Burger (`380) were both phenomenal! Just when we decided to stop eating, we were reminded about dessert. We tried the signature Seven Layer Cookie (`290) and the Lemon Tart (`90) — both were just as good as everything else we tried. The cookie had delicious layers of Belgian chocolate, butterscotch and almond, while the Lemon Tart had a pleasant, tangy hit. I wouldn’t say that The Nutcracker is a place to visit every day, but it has the potential to serve as a great place for breakfast or a relaxing brunch.

T

hink Goth and steam punk music and the last thing that will come to your mind is Ila Arun dressed in a grunge attire, lending her husky voice to a Hindi song. But, that’s exactly what Dhruv Ghanekar’s new single, Dhima, has to offer. You can watch the single — which is part of his new album, Voyage — on his YouTube channel, dhruv G. We speak to the composer, producer and guitarist, who is also one of the founding members of blueFROG, to find out about his association with Qyuki and his musical influences.

n Tell us about your new video.

The new video has goth and steam punk influences. It is directed by Razy Ghai of Asylum Films and features Ila Arun. It’s different from anything that has been released in this country and has already received a phenomenal response! We got over a hundred thousand hits in just 48 hours! We’ve been really overwhelmed by the response. n Folk music is in vogue right now. Do

you think the trend is here to stay? I don’t know about the trend, but for

n Our society faces a host of social ills. Why did you choose

child abuse to write about? Children are very close to my heart; I adore them. I was moved by the story that a child’s mother told me. But, I was also inspired by Nirbhaya’s case. Incidents like this happen to adults as well as children — but children either don’t realise what’s happening or are too terrified to speak up about them. It’s not the child’s innocence or the perpetrator’s ingenuity, but our ignorance that allows such things to happen. Someone had to start talking about it; why not me? n What challenges did you face while writing your book?

The biggest challenge was to handle the emotional aspect of writing about an issue like this one. When I was writing it, several incidents drove me crazy; my mood swings were so frequent that some of my friends began to avoid me! n Your first book In Love With Your Friendship is completely

different from your current book. What brought about that shift in interest? Initially, when I spoke about my passion for writing, either with friends or publishers, I was mocked with names such as Chetan Bhagat and Ravinder Singh. When I published a book about friendship and love, it just gave them more reason to laugh. So, I decided to avoid the romantic genre. Another factor that played a role was watching the protests during the Nirbhaya incident. That made me want to use my pen for a purpose. n Writing and engineering are very different professions.

When did you realise that you wanted to write? I have loved writing ever since I was young, although you wouldn’t want to see my scribbles from then! I usually pick them up to read when I want to have a good laugh. n What themes are you considering for your future work?

n How did your association with

Qyuki begin? Samir Bangara, the CEO of Qyuki, and I have been friends for a few years now, and we have always talked about working together. Voyage provided us with the perfect platform to do just that. Qyuki is a fantastic group of people to work with — totally creative and on top of their game. The people you work with need to understand music the way that you do, and the folks at Qyuki do. They have gone beyond their call of duty to push the album, promote it, talk to people and get it out in the right places.

After publishing a book about friendship and love, author Siddhartha Garg recently released a new book that explores child abuse. Sara Shah finds out more about why he loves using his pen for a purpose

me it’s the sound of our country. I find it interesting to take folk music and turn it on its head. There is always more than one way of playing with it, and the genre lends itself well to re-imagination.

parallel life of composing music for advertising. In a way, it has prepared me to compose anything. It’s hard for me to pick one genre — I enjoy all kinds of music. I look forward to the challenge of going to a space where I have not been before.

n You’ve worked and performed with

several top artists. Tell us about your most memorable moments. There have been plenty. Working with Raul Midon has been phenomenal. For those who don’t know, he is an American singer and songwriter who is considered to be the next Stevie Wonder. Also, working with Karim Ziad has been amazing — I had to chase him for a year and I eventually flew down to Paris to get him to play on the record. I had a lot of fun recording with Linley Marthe and Ila Arun. I’ve known Ila for several years and have worked with her several times. She is an incredible artist. She has immense power and stamina when she sings — so much so that she can put a lot of people to shame . n What are your favourite genres to

compose in? The strange thing is that I have this

n What Indian artists/ bands do you

think are worth watching out for? Indus Creed is one band that has been around for so long. They are an eclectic band and have the ability to re-invent themselves. I think they are a great bunch of guys and fantastic musicians. Their latest album is superb. When it coms to new artists, I think Vasudha Sharma is great! She has a lot of potential. She is always trying different things and puts herself in places that are challenging. I like that quality about her. She is always writing new music and doing things that push her up as an artist.

Alright, so I’m sharing classified information with you (laughs). Following my pledge to write for a cause, I am working on two new assignments. Not Just a Love Story is a murder-mystery that offers a different perspective on the debate surrounding equitable justice for rapists. Maya, on the other hand, is a satirical take on the trials and tribulations that a rape victim faces. It will focus on how a rape victim is exploited many more times after the actual incident by people who sit back at home on their couches and blame the government or abuse the perpetrator for their acts. >> Siddhartha Garg’s latest book on child abuse is inspired by real-life events

n What are you working on right now?

A number of things are in the pipeline. You’ll be hearing something exciting in a couple of months. I also just put out an EP that I recorded with Gino Banks and Sheldon D’silva.

T

he International Monetary Fund (IMF) will soon send a team to India to get a grasp of the implementation of the government's new GDP methodology, which has been questioned in certain quarters, including RBI. IMF's Director for Asia and Pacific Department Changyong Rhee said the change in the methodology was a "welcome move by India" and this was in line with what the multilateral lending institution had suggested. However, a delegation will be sent to India "to discuss and understand the implementation of this methodology", Rhee told PTI in Singapore, yesterday. Earlier this year, India changed the way it measures its GDP or eco-

nomic output and revised its economic growth estimates accordingly. Besides change in the base year, the revised national accounts series incorporates numerous conceptual and methodological improvements to make it more consistent with international best practices. However, the revised data have been termed as "puzzling" by a number of experts and policymakers alike while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also sought clarity from the government on the new methodology and the revised figures. Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, who had also served previously at IMF, last month termed the revised GDP growth figures as a "puzzle" and said the numbers have been "bumped up"

and it was a mystery how to interpret them. The upward revision to GDP figures has also been questioned by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, and most recently by a parliamentary panel. In a report on India published in March, IMF had said the country has improved the way it measures economic output and raised its growth forecast for India to 7.5 per cent for 2015-16, after taking into account the revised figures. IMF had said at that time that it would "continue to examine the improved GDP methodology and its implications for its growth forecasts, and further details on the compilation methodology will enable a deeper understanding of India's near-term and mediumterm growth".

Govt’s 2015 Tech Spend To Grow 5.7% To $6.8 Bn By A Business Reporter

G

lobal consultancy firm Gartner yesterday estimated that the government's technology spend in 2015 will jump 5.7% to USD 6.8 billion on the back of IT services growth. The forecast includes spending on internal services, software, IT services, data centers, devices and telecom services by both local and national governments, it said. The estimate comes in the wake of the high-decibel 'Digital India' and 'Smart Cities' initiatives announced by the government, which have stoked interest of countrybased IT companies that garner large chunks of revenues from outside the country. "IT services are expected to grow 10.5% in 2015 to

reach USD 1.7 billion, with the business process outsourcing segment growing 21.2%," its vice-president for research Anurag Gupta said. The IT services segment, which includes consulting, implementation, IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing, will continue to grow till 2019, he added. Internal IT spending, which covers salaries and benefits paid to the information services staff, will grow 8.8% to USD 1.6 billion in 2015, Gartner predicted. Software spending would be up 10.2% to USD 860 million, led by vertical-specific stand-alone applications, it added. "Various governments and providers will target India's smart cities initiative in the next few years, with an emphasis on citizen

engagement... We also expect developments in integrating services through Aadhaar cards and mobile technologies for various egovernment initiatives," Gupta said.

India Moves Up On Global Travel And Tourism List To 52nd Place By A Business Reporter

I

ndia has moved up 13 notches to 52nd position on a global list of countries in terms of their travel and tourism competitiveness, but ranks worse than its emerging market peers like China, Brazil, Russia and South Africa. While India fares much better as a business destination, the infrastructure gaps, concerns on health, hygiene and environment sustainability, and its "unsettling" safety and security situation has dragged down the overall ranking. The list has been topped by Spain, which is followed by France, Germany, US, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Japan and Canada in the top ten. Of the large emerging markets, China (17th) and Brazil (28th) made it into the top 30, whereas Russia, South Africa and India ranked 45th, 48th and 52nd, respectively. Releasing the biennial list, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said India's relevance as business travel destination is increasing along with its economic growth and it remains a highly price-competitive destination (with 8th position globally on this parameter) and recent changes in its visa regime have the potential to boost

the international arrivals, reports PTI from Geneva. In the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) 2013 India was ranked 65th out of 140 countries covered in its study. The 2015 report ranks 141 countries across 14 separate dimensions, revealing how well countries could deliver sustainable economic and societal benefits through their travel and tourism sector. Long-standing infrastructure gaps remain, especially in tourism-specific infrastructure (where India is ranked 109th) and the quality of roads. India also lags on health and hygiene (106th) and Information, Communications and Technology readiness (114th). The safety and security situation is unsettling, with a perceived increase in the impact of crime and violence (97th), and India ranks only 139th for environmental sustainability. "The diversity in the top 30 shows that a country does not have to be wealthy to have a flourishing tourism sector," World Economic Forum Economist Roberto Crotti said, adding "Many countries should still do more to tackle travel and tourism challenges, including visa policies, better promotion of cultural heritage, environmental protection and ICT readiness."

MF Asset Base Grows To Rs 11.86 Lakh Cr By A Business Reporter

T

he Mutual fund (MF) industry's asset base has grown around 10% to Rs 11.86 lakh crore at the end of April from March, primarily driven by huge inflows in equity schemes and money market segment. In fact, MFs' assets under management (AUM) hit a record Rs 12.02 lakh crore in February itself.

Fund houses are upbeat about the industry's performance for the current fiscal (2015-16) as equity markets are expected to continue their momentum, making the segment attractive, industry insiders said. The country's 44 fund houses together saw a growth of around 10% in their asset base at Rs 11,86,364 crore at the end of April 2015, according to data released by the As-

sociation of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) on Thursday. The AUM stood at Rs 10,82,757 crore at the end of March 31, 2015. Market analysts attributed the growth in asset base to strong inflows in equity and 'liquid' or 'money market' segments. In April, money market or liquid segment saw an inflow of Rs 1.01 lakh crore while equity funds witnessed an inflow of Rs 10,406 crore.

surance related search/ purchase through the desktop/ laptop, while a higher 85% doing so through the mobile/ tablet. perceived earlier. For motor insurance, the growth is coming from non-metro users as search queries on Google from non-metros are growing at 43% year on year compared to metros at 32%. For health insurance, search behavior on Google was consistent across users in metros and non-metros with queries growing around 45% year on year. Customers preferred an agent particularly for claim settlements and policy receipts.

ariety is the spice of any actor’s life. More so, if like screen-queen Deepika Padukone, she gets to play diverse regional lead characters. In her actual debut regional movie titled ‘Aishwarya’, Deepika spoke Kannada. Much later in ‘Chennai Express’ she was a 'pucca' Tamilian, in ‘Ram Leela’ she was a Gujju-ben, whereas in ‘Finding Fanny’ she was cast as a Goan girl speaking Konkani. Recently in ‘Happy New Year’ she was a staunch Maharashtrian 'mulgi' speaking the tapori lingo. And now in the upcoming ‘Piku’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan, she plays a Bengali girl! “Thankfully, I have never been typecast and I am getting to play diverse regional characters and I am always game for essaying challenging screen characters,” says the svelte ‘Om Shanti Om’ heroine. sion’ through her upcoming ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ foundation. Although she projects that ‘pretty tough’, nononsense, stern exterior with oodles of attitude, in reality, Deepika is a fun-loving yet emotionally-sensitive person who values her privacy. Despite her catapulting overnight into stardom and joining the top-ranking heroines club, she suddenly experienced a phase where she felt ‘low, empty and directionless’. Laments Deepika who has now emerged a positively-transformed person having shed her cocoon of depression, “People who drift into depression, generally feel it’s some sort of a social stigma to visit a psychiatrist and they usually step into a ‘self-denial’ mode. Those feeling a sense of constant depression should open up to their own parents and very close friends who should in turn offer proactive support and help them get medical counseling and treatment. The earlier this is done its better, as it could sometimes eventually also lead to tragic consequences,” she insists.

The ‘Khiladi’ action star who has found his niche in comedy too has had a recent slump with some of his movies not doing too well. But Akshay Kumar has made an entry into Marathi film production. He told the ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi in a candid chat about the reason why he took this bold step. You have recently got into Marathi film production. Yes. I know Marathi very well and can speak the language too; I admire the content of Marathi films in recent times and so I produced '72 Miles' for which I got many awards. It made me happy because I am generally not considered for awards because they award only actors of serious films and ignore a comic and action star like me.

Will you be doing comedy films in the future? Yes. I am all eager because I have hardly smiled in my last few movies and am eagerly awaiting 'Housefull 3' to start so that I can enjoy my work too.

You recently refused 'Heri Pheri 3'? Any specific reason? I have my personal reasons and wouldn’t like to disclose anything at this juncture.

What next? I am doing ‘Airlift’, a film based on the real life evacuation of Indians from Kuwait during the Gulf war crisis.

PITAJI TO DAD

T

he film releasing this week, Piku, is about a father and daughter. From the look of it, their relationship is unusual, or least, not like the typical Hindi film baap-beti. Most Hindi film father’s have been stern and forbidding patriarchs who ruled over their families with an iron fist—particularly controlling their daughters. Through the Sixties and Seventies, they puffed on pipes, dressed in silk dressing gowns or suits and threw blank cheques at their daughter’s impoverished suitors to get them to vanish. The most unforgettable fa-

ther in the tyrannical list remains Chaudhary Baldev Singh of Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. He lives in London, but brings

up his daughters like they were living in an Indian village. They have no voice and no control over their lives; he expects his wife and daughters to obey him without question, even if is about to ruin their future. He is not even addressed as Papa or Daddy, but Bauji. In contrast was Kamal Haasan who went to great lengths to be close to his daughter in Chachi 420. When his marriage broke up and he wasn’t allowed to meet his daughter, he got into drag and took up employment as her nanny. In the list of friendly dads,

there’s Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul Khanna in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, whose precious daughter takes it upon herself to find a match for her widowed father, who still behaves like a collegian. Roles were reversed in Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Daddy’, in which a daughter (Pooja Bhatt) discovers that her father is not dead, as she has been told. Her grandparents have kept him away from her, but when he reappears in her life, he is a hopeless alcoholic vagabond. Pooja defies her grandfather and puts her dad on the path to recovery, and also helps him regain his singing career. Anupam Kher has played a number of interesting fathers—a recent example is Daawat-eIshq in which he is very supportive of his daughter, even when she hatches a convoluted plot to trap and dump a groom, so that she can blackmail him for money. Paresh Rawal played two very unusual dads in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sir, in which he was a gangster devoted to his daughter (Pooja Bhatt), andTamanna in which he was a eunuch who raises an abandoned girl (also Pooja Bhatt). Ashok Kumar, Motilal, Balraj Sahni, Rehman, Nazir Hussain, Utpal Dutt, AK Hangal… to name a few, wonderful actors who played fathers to their filmi daughters, and left behind frames of memory.

UMBAI: SunRisers Hyderabad kept their play-off hopes alive by pulling off a well-deserved seven-run victory over Rajasthan Royals in a rousing IPL cricket contest that went to the wire at the Brabourne Stadium. Riding on contrasting fifties from Shikhar Dhawan (54) and Eoin Morgan (68 off 28 balls), SRH posted a mammoth 201 for 4 in 20 overs. Chasing the formidable target, Royals lost in-form batsman Ajinkya Rahane (8) cheaply but a superb innings of 68 from Steve Smith brought them back in contention. And then a late-order flourish from James Faulkner (30), Sanju Samson (21) and Chris Morris (34 not out) brought the hosts in touching distance of victory, which was not to be. Morris threatened to take the game away with a flurry of three sixes in the 19th over bowled by Praveen Kumar (040) before Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (3-44) stopped Royals short in the last over, in which Sunrisers Hyderabad player Eoin Morgan plays a shot during their IPL they needed 18 runs. It was nipped by leg spinner Pravin Tambe (1-32), who clean up the Australian allrounder while he attempted a big heave. Morgan hit Watson for a huge six before Dhawan slogswept off-spinner Deepak Hooda (0-34) over the ropes to raise his 50 in 33 balls, while the team total swelled by 14 runs in that over. But he attempted an ambitious reverse sweep off James Faulkner (1-37) soon afterwards and was castled after adding 38 runs with Morgan. Irish-born Morgan was joined by Ravi Bopara and went on the offensive in the last five overs during which the score rattled along. Morgan singled out Tambe, whose first three overs cost only 14 runs by carting the leg spinner for two sixes, a four and a couple in his last over. He lofted Faulkner for a straight six to reach 50 off 23 balls, a knock laced with four sixes and as many fours. Brief Scores: SunRisers Hyderabad: 201/4 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 54, Eoin Morgan 63; Shane Watson 2-36) bt Rajasthan Royals: 194/7 in 20 overs. For me what matters are runs that Virat scores: Ganguly

NEW DELHI: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is not really bothered about whether Virat Kohli has attitude problems as what matters at the end of the day is his "class" and the "runs that he scores" for India. On the context of whether he on the same lines as BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya about Virat's behavioural issues, Ganguly replied,"You need to ask the BCCI president as to what he said on Virat. To me, he is a terrific player. That's how I look at it. He is a young boy. He is just 26. Therfore, more he will learn, better he will get. At the end of the day, he is a class act." Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA), Ganguly said that Kohli should be judged for his qualities as a top class batsman and the amoubt of runs he scores for India. "I hope he continues to bat like the way he is doing right now. Every person is different and you got to treat them differently. I only look at the runs he scores and nothing else. I hope one day, he will lead the side to a World Cup title," said Ganguly. The elegant left-hander however skirted the issue of him taking up the India coach's role. "There is no point thinking about it. If you get the job, you do it. As of now now, I am not aware of anything," Ganguly didn't want to entertain queries on his rumoured role. arcelona: Lionel Messi struck twice and set up Neymar in the last 13 minutes as Barcelona beat Bayern Munich 3-0 in the Champions League semifinal first leg, ensuring Pep Guardiola's Camp Nou homecoming ended in misery. On his 100th appearance in European football, Messi's double moved him back ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo as the all-time leading scorer with 77 in the Champions League and Barca to the brink of their first final in four years. Manuel Neuer had kept Bayern in the game with a string of fine saves, but was helpless as Messi drilled home the opener from the edge of the area in the 77th minute and then delightfully chipped the German three minutes later. Messi then fed Neymar in stoppage time to roll past Neuer and hand Bayern an almost impossible task in next week's second-leg. "The result is a bit harsh. We wanted to control and play our own game," said Bayern boss Guardiola, a former Barca coach. "Against Barca you can defend deep or play to control. Our control in the first-half worked pretty well, especially in the final 15 minutes. After the 1-0 it sapped our confidence a bit, the last goal is a shame because at 2-0 we had a chance but 3-0 is difficult." Victory takes Barca a step closer to just the second treble of Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey in the club's history. "It is a

Lawsuits pile up over Pacquiao injury L

os Angeles: Call it the fallout of the century. More disgruntled fight fans are going to court with their complaints, suing Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao and others for failing to disclose a shoulder injury prior to his "Fight of the Century" against Floyd Mayweather. A class-action suit filed in US District Court in Illinois not only names Pacquiao and promoters Top Rank but also telecasters HBO and Showtime, who combined to produce the pay-per-view fight program that was sold in the United States for about $100. The suit also names Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions and cable television providers AT&T, COMCAST and DirecTV, and accuses the defendants of deceptive practices in marketing and advertising the bout. "Defendants, individually and collectively, deceptively and fraudulently promoted, produced and sold the fight as one between two healthy fighters... Expressly misrepresenting the health of Manny Pacquiao to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, all in an effort to maximize and collect pay-per-view revenue," the lawsuit claims. At least five such class-action suits have been filed across the United States, seeking millions of dollars in compensation on behalf of those who bought tickets, forked out pay per view fees or bet on Saturday's fight in LasVegas, which Mayweather won easily on points. Pacquiao revealed afterwards that he had been held back by the shoulder complaint. It did not take long for

the lawsuits to come flooding in. Two men in Nevada sued on Tuesday, saying the promotion violated the state's Deceptive Trade Practices Act. In a similar suit filed in California, plaintiff Howard B. Sirota cites former heavyweight world Champion Mike Tyson as calling the long-anticipated bout the "Dud of the Century."

ElAttrache, of the Kerland Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, said he couldn't be more pleased with the results and fully expects Pacquiao to resume his boxing career, a Pacquiao spokesman said. The arthroscopic procedure took 90 minutes and was an outpatient operation, so Pacquiao did not have to spend the night in the hospital. It came four days after Pacquiao's PACQUIAO HAS SURGERY ON 12-round unanimous decision loss to INJURED SHOULDER Floyd Mayweather on Saturday in Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao Las Vegas in the most lucrative fight had surgery on his injured right in boxing history. perfect result," said Barca boss Luis Enrique. "It brings us closer to a possible final, but we have to confirm it in the second-leg, which will without doubt be a hard game. I am very satisfied with how we played and the result against such a strong team. We had a lot of chances and they had very few." Guardiola is Barca's most successful ever coach having won 14 trophies in four years between 2008 and 2012 and was given a warm reception by the home fans as he took his seat for the first time in the away dugout. However, his early tactical plan to play three at the back nearly proved costly. Bayern's intense pressing was forcing Barca to play long more than they are accustomed to, but it nearly worked to perfection when Messi's headed flick-on sent Luis Suarez clear behind the Bayern defence after 12 minutes. Neuer, though, stood up brilliantly to divert the Uruguayan's effort to safety with an outstretched right leg. Suarez turned provider for the next opening as his low cross picked out Neymar only for his goalbound effort to strike Rafinha and deflect behind. The visitors then had a huge chance of their own as Thomas Mueller picked out the unmarked Robert Lewandowski, but the Polish international -- who was playing with a protective facemask after suffering a broken nose and

cheekbone just last week -- sliced his effort wide. Neuer came to Bayern's rescue again six minutes before the break, spreading himself to deny Dani Alves as he latched onto Andres Iniesta's through ball. Bayern started the second period the brighter, but it was once again Neuer who was the busiest goalkeeper as he handled a driven shot with Messi after a neat onetwo with Neymar. The two combined once more moments later but Neymar just couldn't bring Messi's lofted pass under control and Neuer galloped from his line to clear the danger. However, Messi was not so forgiving when offered room on the edge of the area for the first time as he fired past Neuer at his near post 13 minutes from time. Three minutes later he produced an even more sublime finish as the Argentine received Alves's pass and left Jerome Boateng stumbling to the ground before dinking the ball over the advancing Neuer on his weaker right foot. Suarez should have made it 3-0 moments later when he raced onto Neymar's through ball but blazed wildly over. Yet, Neymar was cooler when bearing down on Neuer in stoppage time from Messi's pass as this time he found the back of the net and all but secured Barca's passage to the final in Berlin early next month. The other semi-final first leg played Tuesday saw Juventus claim a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid.

URGAON: Sprint legend Carl Lewis waded through the Tyson Gay doping controversy, saying that the reigning Olympic 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt has raised a "legitimate" issue but he should "clean up his own country first" before talking about others. Bolt has launched a blistering attack on his 100m sprint rival Gay, claiming the American should have been kicked out of athletics and not a reduced ban for failing dope tests. Gay failed three drugs tests in 2013 after using steroid creams but only received a backdated oneyear suspension last year. He was given the reduced penalty because he provided evidence to the US Anti-Doping Agency that led to an

Clean up Jamaica first, Lewis to Bolt on Gay controversy eight-year ban for his former coach, Jon Drummond. "He (Bolt) has raised a legitimate issue and I understand that but rules are rules. But see a Jamaican is talking about it. Lots of doping issues have come out in Jamaican athletics in the last 4-5 years. He should first think of cleaning up his own house," Lewis told reporters on the sidelines of the Times of India Sports Awards here tonight. "Doping is not good for sports. I have said that and I have taken a

stand on that in 1987 and in 2008. "How many people have taken stand on doping?" he questioned. "I you don't take stands on the issue, please shut up," Lewis said apparently asking whether Bolt had taken stand on other doping issues, including that appeared in Jamaica. Gay clocked faster times than Bolt last year and will be a serious threat to the Jamaican at the World Championships in Beijing this summer.
