Girish Gogia has been awarded by the United Nations for his determination to inspire people and motivate them to live a positive and better life
By Abhishek Vissapragada
L
ying comfortably on his bed supported by pillows, Girish Gogia does not look like a man who has travelled to many places in the world. Although he is paralyzed from below his neck, he smiles as if the lack of movement is not a problem. Gogia recently received the 'Karamveer Chakra Medallion' from The International Confederation of NGOs, an organisation instituted by the United Nations (UN) at Delhi. The ADC spoke to Gogia about his journey and achievements. Excerpts: Firstly, congratulations on receiving the award for your pro-active citizenship. How do you feel on receiving this honour? Oh, I feel wonderful to be honoured by the committee for my work. The organisation looks into all the good work that is done by concerned citizens and takes the responsibility to right the wrongs in many countries. So I feel that the re-
sponsibilities for my work also increases.
Tell us how this journey of 'Positive Earth', which is also your initiative and motto, began in your life? The initiative has been an understanding of how I have lived my life in the past 25-30 years. I have travelled around the world and lived an adventurous life while conducting my business which is interior designing. I met with an accident in Goa in 1999 which led to my paralysis. A few months after the accident I was very depressed and was filled with negative thoughts. But I resolved to look at life in a positive way. I continued my interior designing business and for 11 years I did some tremendous work in my field. But in 2011, I had a kind of divine intervention which said that I need to inspire people and motivate them around the world. That's how I gave up my business and hit upon the idea
of 'Positive Earth'. Have you ever been teased for your condition by people? I have not been teased as such but I have been looked down upon by many people. This happens with every disabled person. People feel pity and sympathy towards us but they also look down upon us because we are disabled physically. But they also have disabilities like fear, hatred, low self esteem, low confidence, etc. But since they are physically fit they feel they are above us.

Hopefully I can do my best towards it.

HOME TRUTH... While Mumbai boasts of several new advertisements wooing people to buy homes at discounted rates with good amenities, there are still people like this woman near the Highway at Mahim who don't have a secure roof over their head and have propped-up bamboos and a woolen sheet to protect her from the scorching heat, even as she goes assiduously about her business of making wicker baskets .
Aliens are enormous, weigh over 300 kgs!
Aliens, if they exist, would be much larger than humans, weighing over a massive 300 kilogrammes, a cosmologist in Spain has calculated. Fergus Simpson, a scientist at the University of Barcelona, has estimated that the average weight of intelligent extraterrestrials would exceed 300 kilogrammes. The argument relies on a mathematical model that assumes organisms on other planets obey the same laws of conservation of energy that we see here on Earth namely, that larger animals need more resources and expend more energy, and thus are less abundant. There are many small ants, for example, but far fewer whales or elephants. Thus, throughout the universe, as is the case on Earth, there are likely more small animals than large ones, said Simpson. Since the number of planets inhabited by relatively small animals would outnumber the amount of worlds where large ones predominate, it is most likely that we find ourselves on a planet with relatively small animals - and are ourselves probably one of the smaller intelligent beings, Simpson added. Simpson said that a certain minimum size is probably necessary for intelligent life, and he used the range of body sizes found in animals on Earth to come up
with the most probable distribution of organisms on other planets, 'Newsweek' reported. Seth Shostak, a researcher at the SETI Institute, said the study reminded him of previous work he had done suggesting that any extraterrestrials we might eventually find would be on the larger side since bigger animals live longer, and an organism with a longer lifespan might be more likely to develop the kind of technology necessary for making contact with humans. Shostak said the research is "interesting" but cautioned that there is no concrete data to work with. He also said that while humans are not the Earth's biggest organisms it is their thumbs and upright stance - not their body mass - that has allowed their intelligence to blossom. "Polar bears are large but do not write great literature and build radio towers and a lot of that is probably because they are walking around on all fours," Shostak said.
Symbol of secularism
Mariyam Asif Siddiqui, a class VI student who stood first in a contest to explain Bhagvad Gita, was felicitated by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan here. Mariyam, a student of Cosmopolitan High School at Mira
Road, had received the first prize in Gita Champions League competition, an inter-school competition for explaining the teachings of the holy book, which was organised by ISKCON last month. A total of 195 schools, including 105 private and 90 municipal schools, participated in the contest. The Governor had invited Mariyam along with her parents and teachers to Raj Bhavan
yesterday to convey his appreciation to her, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said on Wednesday. Applauding Mariyam's efforts, the Governor presented her a set of books. Mariyam's achievement has been hailed in various sections of society, including political parties of different hues, as the vindication of the Hindu-Muslim unity. She was also feted today by Mumbai unit Congress president Sanjay Nirupam who described her as the symbol of secularism.
Ruskin Bond’s nemesis Ruskin Bond continues to weave a magic spell on his readers with his stories, but the veteran writer feels "stumped and stymied" by the thought of writing about politicians or media tycoons saying he cannot "breathe life" into these subjects. For the author of scores of novels, memoirs, short story collections and books of essays and poetry, writing is easy if he's happy with his theme. "Ask me to write a piece on petunias and I'll turn out an enthusiastic essay on this underrated flower. I might even write a story on someone who grows petunias, because such a person must obviously have sterling qualities... “But ask me to write the story of a political leader or media tycoon and I'm stumped and stymied. Those little drops of
blood threaten to appear," the 80year-old author, awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2014, says. According to Bond, he "cannot breathe life into these subjects", noble though they might be. "Their true personalities, the essence of their natures, somehow elude me. It is not that they are too complicated, but rather that one has to peel off too many layers of protective armour to get at the flesh and blood that lies beneath the skin," he says. These views find mention in Bond's new book "A Book of Simple Living: Brief Notes from the Hills," a personal diary of sorts. Published by Speaking Tiger, the book records the many small moments that constitute a life of harmony with the self, the natural world, and friends, family and passersby. Bond says for most part of his
Ruskin Bond
life, he "followed instinct rather than intelligence, and this has resulted in a modicum of happiness". The Kasauli-born writer, who has settled in Mussoorie with his adopted family, says he loves his life passionately and wishes it could go on and on. "But all good things must come to an end, and when the time comes to make my exit, I hope I can do so with good grace and humour. But there is time yet, and many small moments to savour," he says

hiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik yesterday dragged socialite and columnist Shobhaa De for her tweets on the state governments move to make it mandatory on multiplex owners to give prime time slots for Marathi movies. Moving the motion in the legislative assembly he said that while the move was welcomed by all, De through her acerbic tweets showed her hatred for Marathi. After coming to know of a privilege motion moved against her De yet again tweeted “Now a privilege motion demanding an apology from me? Come on! I am a proud Maharashtrian and love Marathi films. Always have. Always will !” In a statement issued here Sarnaik argued that De in four of her tweets even taunted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and also targeted the government by calling its action as “Dadagiri”. He added that the columnist in one of her
Pratap Sarnaik tweets sarcastically commented that if Marathi movies are shown during prime time in multiplexes then instead of popcorn, one would get “Dahimisal” and “Vadapav” to eat. Sarnaik stated that her comments amount to an insult to the Marathi language and Marathi people of the state. Coming out in defence of his party MLA, senior Sena MP
Sanjay Raut remarked “When we have Marathi people and Marathi language, anything done in favor of Maharashtra is welcomed.” For the better part of the day social media platforms twitter and facebook were flooded with messages in support and against of the government's move and De as well. It may be recalled that Minister for Cultural Affairs Vinod Tawde while replying to a debate on Marathi language, culture and other allied issues had announced in the legislative assembly that henceforth the government would make it mandatory for multiplex owners to reserve at least one screen for Marathi movies during prime time. He added that the government would also make it mandatory for multiplex owners to telecast a shortfilm on Dadasaheb Phalke before any show. Phalke is considered the pioneer of Indian film industry as he brought the motion picture technology to the sub-continent.

60-year-old man have been arrested by Kandivali police for allegedly repeatedly raping his own 23-year-old daughter over a period of two years. The accused father was arrested on Wednesday after cops filed an FIR against him. The family is very poor and live on the streets of Kandivali (West). According to the Kandivali police the incident occurred at around 2 am on a footpath in Poisar area of Kandivali
west. The family comprises of the accused, the victim, the accused wife and two more siblings. The accused forced himself on her, while his wife and other people were sleeping on the street. The victim screamed out which alerted the neighbors who beat up the accused and took her away from him. The neighbors early morning took the victim to the Kandivali police station where a case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the father. The accused was arrested and produced before a magistrates’ court and
was remanded to police custody for five days. When asked if he raped her in the past as well, senior police inspector M Pandharmise of Kandivali police station, “Yes. She said in her statement that he had sexually assaulted her in the past as well.” Mr. Pandharmise added that the accused was not in an inebriated condition and that he is of sound mind. “We have sent the woman for medical examination to the Police hospital in Nagpada. We are also now recording the statements of other pavement dwellers to find out more about the incident,” noted Pandermise.
Ad firm owner, Bhinde booked in cheating case By Tariq Khan
T
he owner of leading advertisement firm Guju Ads, Bhavesh Bhinde, has been booked in a cheating case registered at the Mulund police station, where a person has accused him of forging ownership documents of the latter’s flats through which he also secured a loan and later sold them off. Bhinde however refuted the allegations, saying the complainant Jayesh Mirani is resorting to a police complaint as a last ditch effort to settle a personal score with him.According to the FIR registered by Miran at the Mulund police station on Wednesday,
Bhinde usurped property owned by him at Mirani Nagar near the Kalidas Natyagriha at Mulund (west) by faking ownership and registration documents. “I had rented the places to him for the past 20 years but took back the possession in 2012 since he had been defaulting on the rent. He later made fake ownership documents and registration certificates showing him as the owner and obtained a loan of several lakhs from the Maharashtra Cooperative Bank’s branch in Navi Mumbai using the flats as collateral. He then also sold the flats to someone else. It is only when the flats got entangled in legal trouble and I saw a court receiver’s notice when I realized the fraud,” Mi-
rani claims. Following the complaint, the Mulund police booked Bhinde and his mother Jamaben (65) under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC. When contacted, Bhinde said the allegation was baseless since he had original ownership documents to prove the flats’ title. “We had acquired those flats through Mirani’s brother who was the power of attorney for the properties. Even the police recognized this and therefore did not include a forgery charge. There is something personal between us going back a long way back for which he is trying to score brownie points,” he said while speaking to ADC.

blackmail a Pizza outlet manager on the pretext that they had found a dead lizard in their pizza By Zuber Ansari
T
wo Oshiwara-based youths have been arrested by the Kandivali police in an extortion case after a complaint was filed against them by a leading pizza company alleging that the duo were demanding Rs 5 lakhs from them after claiming that they have found a dead lizard in their pizza and that they also had a video of the same. Police say that the two accused, Mirza Mudassar Beg and Yusuf Salim Shaikh had gone to the Pizza outlet to have a pizza, but suddenly started shouting at the staff alleging that they have found
a dead lizard in it. The staff apprised the Pizza shop's manager. The two accused even showed a video of their version of the incident and demanded Rs 5 lakhs to hush-up the matter. Interestingly, when both the youths were threatening and demanding money, the Pizza shop manager too made his video of the incident and showed it to the police, which led to their arrest on Sunday evening. Senior police inspector of Kandivali Police station M Pandarmise said, “The Pizza shop manager had approached us with his video due to which we made the arrests. The youths did not say anything about the video which they claimed to have. If they had any video then they should come forward and filed a complaint. Mirza and Yusuf have already been released on bail, but till now they did not approach us to lodge an FIR against the Pizza shop manager.”

Manisha Gurav registering a complaint at the GRP police station, yesterday. was returning home from her work travelling in the last Karjat local. "I was in the second class ladies compartment, when a 25-year-old guy entered the compartment, in which 3-4 ladies were present. He grabbed my mobile from my hand even as I grappled with him, but after getting hold of the mobile he thrashed me till the door and took off even as the train started. There was no police present in the compartment, therefore the ladies who were present with me in the local shouted for help but as there were no police official, neither in the train or on the platform, we could not get any help at that moment," said Manisha. “At present I have registered a case against the unknown accused in Thane GRP police station,” added Manisha. When contacted, Ravindra Singhal, GRP Commissioner, Mumbai said, “The complaint has been taken and investigation is on, probably the accused will
be detected in a day or two. I have also demanded a detailed report in the case as there were no police official in the compartment. But, in the other ladies compartment they were officials present, as they keep changing the compartments to check on untoward incidents. We need to look into more details in this case, we will go through the report and accordingly action will be taken.” “I have been travelling often late at night and I catch the first ladies compartment towards Kalyan, but no GRP official are present in this compartment, they are either present in the middle or last ladies compartment. As there should be a GRP official present in every ladies compartment and even on railway platforms at odd hours. If there had been an official present either in the compartment or on the platform, the thief could have caught at that time or he would have not dared to enter the compartment," Manisha added.

Mumbai witnessed 61 deaths in 5 years due to Swine Flu

T
he city of Mumbai has witnessed 61 deaths in the last 5 years due to Swine Flu, if a reply filed by the government of Maharashtra under the Right to Information (RTI) query is to be believed. According to RTI activist Anil Galgali, who has made this expose, the government has failed to control and put a permanent halt on this ever growing disease. Out of 61 deaths recorded in last five years, 20 persons belonged to other cities than Mumbai, Galgali claims, who had sought information from the Public Health Department of BMC. The activist had sought information from the Public Health department of BMC regarding casualties and number of patients admitted due to swine flu in the BMC jurisdiction. Based on the RTI, the Epidemic Control Department's Deputy Health Officer (DHO) of the BMC replied that since the year 2010 to 2014 in all 1,301 patients with swine flu were reported and 33 were dead in this period. In the year 2015, till March 15, out of 1,150 persons diagnosed with swine flu, 450 were admitted to hospitals and 8 patients have been reported dead due to the disease. Also out of the total 149 people from outside Mumbai, 131 are already undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Amongst outsiders, 20 people have succumbed
to this disease. “What is a matter of concern and shocking is that in comparison to 2010, the death rate is more in the first three months of 2015 then in 2010. Till now in Mumbai 8, and from outside Mumbai 20, so in all 28
people have been found dead. Looking at these figures, I have requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte for arranging separate funds go tackle this dangerous disease,” Galgali said.
No separate funds to tackle Swine Flu
In an RTI query, Galgali had asked for the funds that were made available to tackle swine flu by the centre, state government and BMC. He was told that no such separate fund has been organized or given to the Epidemic Control Department of the BMC. But, even if there is no separate funds available, all the BMC Hospitals are well equipped with all the facilities required to tackle the deadly disease. 'Oseltmiveer' the drug that is prescribed against Swine Flu is also available in plenty in all the hospitals. The testing of swine flu facility is made available at the PCR laboratory at Kasturba, Haffkine Laboratory and various other private laboratories. A public helpline has been started and one can dial 24114000 to report the same.

he swine flu virus has claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy in Mumbai taking the death toll to 39 on Wednesday, Kasturba hospital doctors said. The total number of swine flu cases registered in city hospitals has now risen to 1,653. The victim was a resident of Kurla and was admitted at Sion Hospital for hypertension on March 29. He was later transferred to Kasturba hospital at Parel on April 5 for treatment. But the boy died on Wednesday due to multiple organ failure caused by the H1N1 virus. There were 7 new cases regis-
tered in city hospitals for swine flu yesterday. Among these there were 5 men and 2 women who were undergoing treatment for the disease. Besides these, there are 2 patients who have been transferred from neighboring districts to the city hospitals for treatment. The number of swine flu cases being registered has come down significantly in the past few days. On March 5, there were 6 cases and on March 6 there were 4 cases registered for swine flu. On March 7 there were 15 cases registered. This is a good sign as there used to be more than 30 cases registered daily when the disease had become viral, doctors say.

he decade long issue of the memorial of Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mills compound, next to Chaityabhoomi, finally got the green signal on Sunday. The Union textiles ministry, the Maharashtra government and the National Textile Corporation (the land owner) signed an agreement in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and the 12 acre land was handed over to the Maharashtra government for the memorial. The grandson of Babasaheb, Anandraj Ambedkar said, “It's the victory of all the Ambedkar supporters who fought for the memorial. We want that the memorial should be made on the lines of Statue of Liberty and it should be called Statue of Equality. This statue will enhance freedom, brotherhood, democracy and equality. It will inspire the Ambedkar supporters, and this statue will be like once and for all. At present there are numerous statues at various places and people fight over them. Once this statue is made it
Anandraj Ambedkar will put an end to all such tiffs.” He further added, “There will be no Bhumipujan as such on this Ambedkar Jayanti as PM Modi and CM Fadnavis will not be in the town, and because both of them have promised to attend the function we will wait. And for us Bhoomipujan and all is not that important, the most important thing is that all our efforts have paid off and the memorial will come into existence.”

Ponder awhile... “Men rise from one ambition to another: first, they seek to secure themselves against attack, and then they attack others.” — Niccolo Machiavelli
Mass murder W
hat happened at Tirupathi was not an encounter: It was mass murder. There is increasing evidence that the trigger-happy police just shot dead 20 people without ascertaining first they were sandalwood smugglers. The police were carrying guns. The men had sickles and knives with them. It is evident that the police resorted to firing without any provocation. The Andhra government is not likely to condemn the action of the police. It has already dubbed the innocent men who were from Tamil Nadu as sandalwood smugglers. The BJP government at the centre apparently has concluded the 20 persons who were shot dead were smugglers. Even if the men were smugglers, the police should not have murdered them. Their effort should have been to capture the smugglers. That would have been the right thing to do. There has been widespread agitation among locals as well as in Chennai. What should be done is to take the police tp task on the charge of killing innocent people. There have been demonstrations and all political parties have condemned the horrible incident. The police claim that there has been an encounter has no basis at all. It was the police who had the guns and the men had no chance or time to escape. Before they could move, they were gunned down. All of them had begun to run when the police began firing but while a large number of them were killed, some did escape. Knives against guns — what sort of encounter is this!

LL is not well in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, if the news about the growing dissidence within the two-year old party is any indication. Yes, whatever may happen, the party boss and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, is sure to rule the state till 2020, i.e. the full stipulated term of the sitting State Assembly. Of course, survival of the government does not necessarily mean running of the state administration. The numerically strong government can also turn in to a politically weak body that has an obvious adverse impact on the state functions and policy making. AAP, born as the outcome of Anna Hazare’s historic Jan Lokpal agitation at Ramlila Maidan of Delhi four years ago, surprised one and all when it won 67 out of 70 Delhi State Assembly Seats, elections for which were held early this year. It reduced the main contender Bharatiya Janata Party to a meagre three seats and wiped out Congress from the Delhi state Legislative politics. Having such an unprecedented mammoth success, the AAP government under Kejriwal was expected to get going to fulfill the promises given to the electorate of Delhi.
Second innings The voters chose to grant second innings to AAP, despite the fact that it had thrown the towel in the ring within 40 days after it took the reins of the state. This was because Kejriwal had successfully managed to make the people feel that neither the Congress that ruled the state for 15 years, nor the BJP that had posed challenge to the AAP were interested in the real welfare of Delhiites. Kejriwal’s promise to provide electricity and water at half the rate touched the imagination of the people. The impact increased multi-fold when the BJP fielded former Delhi super cop Kiran Bedi as the Chief Minister nominee. President Barack Obama’s visit to India to witness India’s Republic Day Parade brought glory to PM Narendra Modi internationally and in the rest of India. But Obama’s visit was a pain to residents of Delhi due to his undue security arrangements. This situation also worked in favour of Kejriwal and AAP tasted huge success beyond anybody’s imagination. However, Kejriwal, the supreme and only boss of the party and the government has so far failed to live up to the expectations, thanks to the in-fighting in the party fold. Party’s founder members Prashant Bhusan, followed by another senior and respected leader Yogendra Yadav fired the first salvo against

Kejriwal’s leadership and termed hin as dictator. In return, Kejriwal swung into action immediately after he returned from his tenday medical leave and managed to remove the duo from the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), the highest body of the party. Soon after he held the meeting of the national council and voted both of them out of the body. Yadav was stripped off his position of
and insiders believe that Kejriwal was not ready for any political advice from them. Both were against ‘AAP’ forming the government with the outside support from Congress. Kejriwal, however, dared to go with his plan to form a minority government. The result is well-known. There are also rumours that Bhushan did not want AAP to win the last Assembly elections. However, contrary to his wishes, the party came out with flying colours.
Murder of Democracy
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut the Chief Spokesman. Another supporter retired Air Marshall Ramdas was removed from the post of party’s internal Jan Lokpal. Kejriwal’s actions were swift and complete. He has so far ensured that his position within the party and thus in the government has remained intact and unchallenged. Kejriwal being a former bureaucrat, planned his actions neatly and without leaving any lacunae. Therefore, now both Bhushan and Yadav are in the party, but without any position or authority. Now that ‘anti-party activity’ charges are being leveled against both, sooner or later they would be held guilty and would be thrown out of the party. In such a situation, Bhushan and Yadav would have to either go in the political wilderness or form another party to challenge Kejriwal and the AAP publically. As of now, it looks like the party MLAs stand by Kejriwal for the simple reason that under the provisions of the Anti-Defection Law, they cannot cross swords with Kejriwal, unless they have a solid support of more than 44 MLAs. It seems a very difficult task, particularly when the political system has borne expenses of two general elections along with Lok Sabha polls in the last two years. It would be interesting to see what went wrong between Kejriwal on one hand and Yadav and Bhushan on the other hand, when the trio were very close to each other till the 2013 Assembly elections. Political watchers
Yadav and Bhushan were ousted from the party positions by majority vote. Yadav has alleged that it was a ‘murder of democracy’. He said that ‘bouncers’ were posted at the venue of the meeting to ‘take care’ of those who opposed Kejriwal. TV visuals of the after-meeting melee show some strongmen ‘handling’ AAP volunteers. Who were these men? Kejriwal is yet to answer. Another party activist and a senior leader, Medha Patkar, threw her resignation in protest against the behaviour of Kejriwal and his men. Removal of retired Air Marshall Ramdas from the post of party’s internal Lokpal has also raised many eyebrows. Ramdas had also raised questions about party’s internal functioning. In return he was shown the door. These are the symptoms of growing dissidence against the party’s top leadership within the party. Considering that AAP is still in the stage of organizational building, exodus of any scale has the potential to prove to be fatal in the near future. Party is about to spread its wings in the nearby states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab, where elections for state Assemblies are scheduled within a year. If in-fighting continues, the AAP will reduce to be a Delhi party and would not make any mark in any other state. Hopefully, Kejriwal has a bigger and wider dream to spread as a national party. People of India were also looking at AAP as a potential force to take on the traditional political parties, which are defamed for being corrupt and inefficient to live up to nation’s aspirations. I, in my earlier, articles had repeatedly mentioned that AAP is the last hope for the young and politically active generation of India as they want to see a corruption-free and effective political force. Fall of AAP will in turn be the crashing of well-deserved dream of Indians to see a better political system. Mr. Kejriwal and his lieutenants, are you listening? @BharatkumarRaut

Pity Ashok Khemka APROPOS 'Transfer of honest officer - 46 times' (ADC, Apr 7 ), this edit piece is indeed read with considerable concern regarding the 46th transfer of an IAS officer who wants to carry on with his services with integrity and honesty. During the UPA II rule he was the person who had exposed the son-in-law of the Congress stalwart Sonia Gandhi in dubious land deals and thereby he came in to the bad books of the Congress rulers. However with the change of the ruling party the common man expected that this officer should be treated well for his honesty but alas! this time he has caught red handed a person in the transport department for his wrong doing. He is close to the present ruling party, thereby Khemka is again in trouble for his actions. It goes without saying that hence forth the IAS officers would think twice to act in such a self less way as Khemka did, who worked for the country alone. I echo Anna Hazare's sentiments that politics and honesty can never go hand in hand. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

lmost a week after the incident wherein HRD Minister Smriti Irani spotted a CCTV camera facing the trial room at a Fabindia Outlet at Candolim in Goa, women have become more apprehensive about their security at clothing stores. They have expressed skepticism about buying clothes at major garment outlets and found it shocking that such incidents occur where female employees work. According to them, spontaneous checks should be conducted by the police. There has been an increase in the inspections conducted by the police. Even as the Kerala police has conducted discreet checks at several clothing outlets as well as hotels, the Maharashtra police is also not leaving any stone unturned in checking such malpractices. Mumbai-based women also expressed their skepticism while buying products or garments from retail outlets. “Women associate

Govt’s move to remove anti-tobacco scrolls in movies draws flak
Anti-tobacco activists say films/TV are the most effective public health intervention any society or govt can make By Prashant Hamine
C
hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday announced in the legislative council that the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) will conduct a probe into the facilities at other jails across the state. He said this while responding to a debate raised on a starred question by Anant Gadgil (Congress) on mobile phones and sim cards being found inside Yerwada Jail. The Chief Minister stated that during the previous government's rule, the Nagpur jail authorities had sent a letter to the government drawing its attention to the presence of 100 odd mobile phones in the jail. The authorities had even pointed out that such a thing would be embarrassing for the government. Fadnavis further stated that the government, for some strange reason did not act on
the report. Cutting across party lines members raised the issue of mobile jammers installed in jails. Replying to the debate Fadnavis stated that the government was considering installing Mobile Jamming Towers in jails. Replying to queries about mobile phones found in Yerwada jail, he said that during the inspection of undertrial Munna Daval Shiekh on May 6, 2014, a mobile phone was found on his person. The government has procured mobile detectors, 24 mobile jammers, walkie-talkie sets, CCTV cameras, metal detectors, door frame metal detectors and baggage scanners to be installed in Yerwada jail. It may be recalled that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who also holds the Home portfolio had come in for criticism recently after five hardcore criminals managed to escape from Nagpur central jail.
concern over better safety mechanisms in trial rooms. She emphasized that urban constituencies should be aware that they will have to pay for such crimes which infringe a woman’s safety. Leandi Van Zyl, a South African national working in Mumbai said that she finds the stores all around Mumbai very safe, however everyone has a right to privacy and their safety must be ensured. “From the very beginning, we have always worked with the Maharashtra Government to ensure safety of women. We condemn such acts and will continue to work for the prevention of such crimes,” Pravin Kumar Patil, DCP - Social Service Branch said. Many students and working women have also expressed that spreading awareness on social media is also an important step. With celebrity and fashion stalwart admirers, there are a few iconic fashion pieces that have achieved cult status on the fashion scale, so much so that they’ve got books, online searches and pages of fashion write-ups dedicated to them! Whether you can afford them or not, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Yamini Walia think you should know about these items, which have changed the face of fashion
BurBerry’s gaBardine It’s a model favourite, but it was originally created for men! It’s the classic tale of functionality becoming a style statement. n The origins: As far back as the Middle Ages, people needed gabardines. The trenches needed to be thick and water repellent. However, they were not comfortable. Enter Thomas Burberry — and his signature Burberry trench. Originally becoming popular after being worn by explorers, it turned into a patterned style statement in the ’50s. n The coat: While it was originally a rain coat for men, made with the subtle beige synonymous with Burberry, the water resistant fabric became a big hit with women too. Now, there’s models rocking short sleeves to sleeveless and shorter versions, all in the signature Burberry shade of brown, with the trademark belted waist.

chanel’s 2.55 purse What happens when a designer tires of a trend? A new one is born of course — in this case, in the form of a luxury leather handbag! n The origins: Coco Chanel decided that carrying her bag in her hands was too troublesome, but she couldn’t give in to carrying it on her shoulders either. Why? Because that was considered low class for such a sartorial icon! So, of course, she created a new design that quickly became the height of high fashion, while being comfortable enough to throw over your shoulder. n The bag: The classic bag (originally black with burgundy lining) was conceptualised in the 1920s, featuring straps that were inspired by the long, thin chains on a soldier’s bag. The woven straps were put in later. The quilted diamond pattern has been mimicked and copied over the years, along with the exterior pocket and the classic intertwined C’s on the lock (known as a mademoiselle lock). The bag has seen several changes over the years (Coco modified it into the iconic 2.55 version around two decades later) and it is now a celebrity favourite.

First Lady Jackie O loved this Gucci bag so much that it was renamed in her honour! n The origins: This handbag made its debut in 1947, long before Gucci renamed the handbag after the US First Lady Jackie O. Since then, it has been part of the Gucci archive. n The bag: Just like Jackie, the bag has a certain timeless quality, with its horse bit hardware and signature red and green stripes. Its soft, unlined leather makes it light and versatile.
Dorothy’s red soles in the fashion world — enter a Louboutin craze, complete with black tops for the most striking shoe trend. n The origins: If you thought Christian Louboutin invented the red sole, or brought it into the fashion world, you’re about to be disappointed, because it dates as far back as Louis XIV of France! Even back then, they were a status symbol, since only nobility could wear them — until Napoleon banned them of course! But, while the Wizard of Oz brought the ruby sole back in style, no one did it better than Louboutin, with soles that have swept the fashion industry since the early ’90s. n The shoe: The Louboutin heel is a recent trend, but everyone who’s anyone has been spotted in them. While he creates all his shoes with red shoes, the most iconic pair have to be the patent black with red heel — the most striking combination we’ve ever seen! Continued on pg 14 «

The Manolo Blahnik sTileTTo A closet staple in the ’70s, Manolo Blahnik stilettos quickly became a symbol of class and luxury. n The origins: As the name suggests, the classic stiletto was created by Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik. Even though the designer didn’t study shoe design, he was responsible for reviving sleek stiletto heels when clunky platforms were all the rage. n The stilettos: Manolo Blahnik hand crafts his stilettos on his own, apart from creating the design. CoNvERSE SNEaKERS Converse sneakers are definitely the most comfortable and the most stylish, fashion icons out there. n the origins: The Converse AllStar basketball shoe was introduced in 1917, which proved to be a turning point for the American shoe company. In 1921, basketball player Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor walked into Converse complaining of sore feet. After giving him the shoes and a job as salesman and ambassador, Converse asked him to promote the shoes around the United States. His signature was later added to the All-Star patch on the classic, high-top sneakers. n the shoes: Several celebrities such as Drew Barrymore and Kristen Stewart have been seen sporting Converse shoes. The comfy shoes are unique, and are distinguished by their Star Insignia. Made from canvas, they are super comfortable and work well with jeans as well as dresses.

Victoria Beckham is famous for owning over a hundred of these — and it’s no surprise that it’s a celebrity favourite. After all, it was created for one! n the origins: Imagine being lucky enough to be seated next to an actress on a flight. You wouldn’t think so if her belongings started falling all over the place, would you? Well, the chief executive of Hermes could count himself lucky when that happened to Jane Birkin, with a straw bag (that wasn’t as sturdy as leather, but was bigger than any of the leather options she was privy to) spilling her belongings. Jean-Louis Dumas quickly created a bag, especially for her. Although she dismissed the design as too heavy, it stuck around for the rest of us to enjoy! n the bag: A cult classic unlike any other, it’s ironic that the lady it was designed for abandoned it after a few uses. There are now several sizes for the two handle leather bag, and although originally black, the plethora of colours has celebrities and fashionistas scrambling to complete their collections. Our favourite part? The gold plated lock and keys — it’s the most secure bag you’ll own!
Before the LBD, there was the Audrey Hepburn Black Dress, an example of what is popularly referred to as one of the most perfect marriages between celebrities and designers — that of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star with Givenchy. n the origins: Back when the LBD was still a little too scandalous to be shown on screen, petite star Audrey Hepburn needed something to flatter her body type for a role that became as well-loved as the dress — and Givenchy knew just what would work. It was designed for her opening scene in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Although the lower half of the original dress was too revealing, a quick modification by Edith Head and it was ready to take the world by storm, taking on a life of its own! n the dress: The long, black satin sheath evening gown is (no surprises here) still an iconic style, definitive of the Parisian chic that’s synonymous with a Hepburn look. The fitted bodice and sleeveless, shoulder-baring look is gorgeous, but what makes it even more appealing are the strings of pearls mimicking the neckline.
Ray baN’S WayfaRERS Nothing beats a steely glare from Tom Cruise over the rim of a pair of wayfarers — but the sunglasses were around before Risky Business hit theatres and catapulted them to fame. n the origins: These sunglasses are an even more important icon because they broke the usual trend of metal frames (even from Ray Ban’s own aviator model!) and went on to create the plastic wayfarer frames in the 1950s. Think James Dean, Bob Dylan, Madonna… they’ve been a style statement for years! n the sunglasses: Even if they’re not Ray Ban, we’re sure you have a pair, or are looking to buy one. The style is so classic, they’ve gone from being high fashion to a fashion staple. Though originally designed for men, smaller versions of the classic black frame, black lens glasses are a big hit with women (even though they almost went out of style some time after the ’60s and before Tom Cruise!), expanding slowly to more colourful versions of lens as well as frame.
thE bREtoN StRIPE Stripes come and go, but the Breton stripe, made popular by the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot is here to stay… n the origins: Initially introduced as a uniform for French navy sailors, the shirt was originally known as marinière or matelot. Coco Chanel introduced them to the world of fashion in her nautical collection in 1917. Even other fashion houses such as Gucci and Givenchy have recreated this pattern in their collections. n the shirt: The shirt featured 21 stripes, each stripe depicting Napolean’s victories. It had a boat neckline and became a symbol of the haute-bourgeois style during the pre-war Riviera years. It’s now a celebrity favourite worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung. >> Boat necks are perfect to highlight breton stripes
These boots were made for walking, and since their comeback in the ’90s as part of the general revival of ’60s fashion, go-go boots have never walked back. n the origins: A 1960s fashion staple, go-go boots were first seen in the work of French designer, André Courrèges. However, these became even more popular in 1966, when Nancy Sinatra performed the song These Boots are made for Walkin’, while wearing go-go boots. She was also responsible for establishing these boots as a symbol of female power. All we can say is — you go-go girl! n the boots: The earliest go-go boots were mid-calf, white and flat-heeled and were later increasingly lengthened up to sit higher up on the leg and crafted in different colours.
’70S WRaP DRESS
DESIGNER’S PICKS We spoke to a few fashion designers, who tell us about their favourite iconic pieces. n Sonu Dharnidharka “Without a doubt, my iconic must-have piece is a pair of Christian Louboutin’s. The instantly recognisable, red-soled Louboutin perfectly accentuates a little black dress.” n Nidhi Munim: “The Original Ray Ban Wayfarer is a headturner! It’s gained immense popularity amongst celebrities, artists and those with impeccable fashion sense.” n Rimple Narula from Rimple & Harpreet Narula: “A personal favourite for me is the iconic ’70’s wrap dress. Ever since its reinvention in the mid ’70s, the wrap dress has been a symbol of women’s liberation and has been embraced by women through the years, from Hollywood celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Amy Adams to Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge. It’s also the day-today uniform for the working girl, thanks to its versatility.” n Shruti Sheth: “A must-have in every girls wardrobe are the Christian Louboutin red sole stilettos. Nothing screams high fashion more or makes you feel sexier than a perfect pair of heels.” n Nikasha: “Undoubtedly, the Chanel 2.55. When I carry that bag, I feel as though I’m carrying a bit of history with me. Coco’s outstanding and original vision, combined with her personal pathos makes it a very unique and special experience.”
Go-Go bootS
LouIS vuIttoN’S MuRaKaMI baG There’s just something about the colourful logos that made this Vuitton bag a must-have. n the origins: You can’t go back to the Middle Ages for this one, but it’s still iconic. A collaboration between artist Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton brought about a bag that veered so close to being tacky, it was obviously an instant hit in the early 2000s. It costs a fortune, but that was part of the appeal, especially for celebrity admirers, who include fashion icon Madonna. n the bag: It’s as classic Vuitton as you can get, but the iconic logo is splashed across the bag in a splatter of bright, pop colours, making it perfect for the loud 2000s fashion scene.
The ’70s can clearly be defined as the peak of retro fashion and the ’70s wrap dress is the perfect example of that. n the origins: The wrap dress was created by designer Diane von Furstenberg in 1972 and it appealed mostly to professional women who needed comfortable, but stylish clothes to wear to work. By 1976, the designer had sold more than 5 million wrap dresses! She relaunched the dress in 1997 when she noticed that women were wearing wrap dresses again. n the dress: The wrap dress is available in all sleeve lengths and includes a self-belt, which is tied around the waist, keeping the dress closed. It is usually produced in knit fabric and its silhouette flatters a variety of figures. It’s a musthave, especially if you’re a working woman.
thE baNDaGE DRESS An incredibly flattering cut and effortless sex appeal defines the bandage dress perfectly. n the origins: The bandage dress was created by Herve Léger, who started as an assistant to fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld. After following Lagerfeld from Fendi to Chanel, Léger branched out alone, and in 1985, he founded his own, self-titled company. Four years later, he celebrated the sensational success of the very first bandage dress. n the dress: The dress was created with Léger’s trademark fabric, comprising of wool or silk woven with lycra. Elastene managed to perfectly mould and shape the dress to a woman’s figure, ensuring the tight, structured fit that we now can’t live without.

Pooja Ghai is a well-known name in the field of wedding planning, and runs an event management company called Tranquiil World. Dev Goswami speaks to her to get a peek into the world of high-profile weddings and finds out about her dream wedding
F
rom wedding invitations and décor for the venue to the bridal couple’s trousseau and wedding feasts, Pooja Ghai likes to be involved in every aspect of the weddings that she plans. A successful model who now runs an event management company called Tranquiil World, she is a familiar name in the industry, especially when it comes to high-profile weddings. Her client list included big names such as the Biyanis and the Dhoots. We talk to her about her passion for her profession and much more.
The food is definitely my favourite aspect of planning a wedding. I get to experiment with food and use my creativity. While other aspects such as the décor, destination and fashion have limitations, with food, that’s not the case. For one wedding that I worked on, I flew in 120 people, including chefs and their respective teams, from across the country. They were speciality chefs. n Over the past two years, destination weddings
have become extremely popular. What do you think the trend is going to be this year? Well, destination weddings will continue to be a fad, but people who decide to have their weddings in their own cities are sticking to 3 and 5 star hotels, where everything is available under one roof. A wedding at a banquet hall, on the other hand, does not include food and décor. Everything needs to be arranged separately.
n Why did you choose to be a wedding planner?
I used to manage corporate events and Pradeep Dhoot, for whom we managed and executed several corporate events, was one of our clients. Mr. Dhoot suggested that I plan his daughter’s wedding. That was the first time we managed hospitality for a wedding. Since then, there has been no looking back for me! n Most of us just read about or see pictures of
high-profile weddings. Without affecting the privacy of any of your clients, can you give us an insight into what a high-profile, lavish wedding is actually like? A high-profile wedding is one that has a high profile/A-lister guest list or a big budget — and sometimes, both. The last wedding that I organised, had a budget of over `20 crores, but the guest list did not include any high-profile names. Also, a high profile wedding generally focuses on exotic locations, sumptuous, lavish food, outstanding décor, expensive gifts and a personalised experience for each and every guest.
n What would you say is the most stressful part of
wedding planning? ‘The entire thing’ is not a valid answer! RSVPs! Co-ordinating with guests regarding their attendance, documentations and visas is a tedious and tiresome process. You are only done with the RSVPs when the wedding is over. We also have to accommodate guests who give us last-minute confirmations, which can be difficult to organise. n If you had complete financial and creative
n You like to be associated with almost every
aspect of a wedding — what is your favourite part?
freedom, what sort of wedding would you plan? The sky would be the limit in that case… If I had complete financial and creative freedom I would definitely choose the Bora Bora islands. This is the world’s most expensive and most beautiful location. I would also like to explore the concept of an underwater wedding.

Performers are often asked several questions when at an event. Predictably, some of them can be annoying. So, we asked some artists to tell us what questions they hate being asked
t the after-party of an event you just attended, you see the artist mingling with the public. In awe of their performance, you’re probably bursting with questions to ask them. But, before you do, make sure it’s not one of these — you may end up annoying the artist and embarrassing yourself! Take a look at what questions these artists hate being asked at events or after-parties.
I am on tour without my husband. Now, why I should discuss my husband and his support (or lack thereof ) with this person is something that I cannot fathom — but it’s fairly simple to see where the conversation is being driven! As a matter of fact, I hate being asked any personal questions and that comes from the fact that my family and I are very private people.”
Does your husbanD support you?
small talk
When well-known Bharatanatyam dancer, Savitha Sastry, told us about the question that she hates being asked, we weren’t surprised. But, it got us thinking. This is a question that we are sometimes guilty of asking too! Savitha, who will be performing tonight at St. Andrews Auditorium, tells us, “Is your husband supportive of what you do is the one question that drives me crazy, and this usually comes from relative strangers, when
Now, we didn’t think that someone would come out and say this, but we’re so glad that international dancer Sowgandhika Krishnan did. No one likes small talk. Not her, not us, and we’re sure that you don’t either. She tells us, “One of the things that annoys me is It’s been so long since I met you; its so lovely to see you again — it’s irritating, especially when it comes from people who don’t mean it! I also get asked about where my husband is and why he
isn’t with me — it’s not necessary to attend every event together, but somehow people expect you to! Another question that is irritating is someone asking about how our work is going, because when we’re at a social event, we really do not want to talk about work!”
Can you please play... ? Seriously? The point of an afterparty is so that the artist, who just played a long set, can relax, eat and make merry. So, why would you ask them this question? Unsurprisingly Hebe Jones, who performs at blueFROG’s The Metro Show, gets quite miffed by the question. She tells us, “I think that the most annoying question at an after party is when people ask me if I can replay the entire set on the spot, after I had just finished a two-hour performance!”

Colour ready
Choosing the right colour for your hair is extremely important, and most women are victims of bad colour choices. Sara Shah brings you a guide that explains how to pick the right colour and tells you what to remember to avoid a tacky hairdo
I
f you’ve ever stepped into a salon with a particularly stylish hair colour for your tresses in mind, only to be left distraught at the end of the procedure, we feel for you. In fact, if you have been through something like this, you’re most likely not alone. A quick example is Kim Kardashian’s attempt at going blonde. Known for her keen sense of style, she was recently spotted stepping out of a salon with her stylish and ultrasexy lob, dyed platinum blonde. And, that’s not all! Weeks ago, she stepped into a salon in Paris, right before a fashion show, and stepped out three hours later with ash white locks! One can only imagine the horror (concealed behind her poker face of course!) that she must have felt when she looked at herself in the mirror. No wonder she switched back so fast. To avoid going back and fourth with colour, read our basic guide to getting your hair coloured. We got Akshata Honawar, the creative director at Runah Salon, Lower Parel to give us a few tips. Take a look.

The Organic Harvest moisturising lotion with tamarind seed extract serves this very purpose. When I just started using it, I was repelled by its smell. before ColoUring There are several factors that you need to consider before getting your hair coloured. It’s understandable if you’re tempted to pick a brand or shade that is endorsed by a popular celebrity. However, remember that just because the colour looks ravishing on the actress, it does not mean that it will have the same effect on your hair. “Before getting your hair coloured, make sure that your hair is healthy enough to withstand the effects of hair colouring agents. Only choose colours that suit your skin tone. Get a thorough consultation and recommendation from your stylist about what colour will suit your skin tone,” says Akshata. Also remember to pick a well-reputed salon to get your hair coloured. Inexperienced hands can end up ruining your hair. So, don’t pick a salon because its cheap. What is it like to see a designer go wrong with her outfit? Masaba shows you exactly how! It seems like Masaba has come to the event straight out of bed. She looks sleepy and her face looks too oily, thanks to her makeup. The top looks shabby and the pants, which look more like pyjamas, are even shabbier. We didn’t expect a designer to commit such a big fashion blunder!
We like the fit of Veera’s all-white salwar kameez, but her bag is an absolute misfit. Also, we wish she would have tied her hair in a bun, as the curls are giving out a very messy appearance. Also, her face looks too oily and the bold lips don’t suit her attire either.

PiCK the right ColoUr You may feel tempted to change your hair colour to one that your favourite actress is sporting, but don’t give in to temptation. Every actress has a well-experienced hair stylist who puts in a considerable amount of time in to selecting her hair colour. So, going blonde when you have a darker skin tone may not be the best option. If you’re inexperienced with hair colour, simply enhance your natural colour by choosing a shade that’s similar to it. Brown is the best bet for warm Indian skin tones and several brands offer a wide range of brown shades. KalKi KoelChin
Kalki, while we do love your quirky sense of style, this one is just a little too much to digest. The combination of the cap with the lace skirt and boots is giving us mixed signals — we are confused as to whether Kalki wants to portray a casual or a formal look. Also, the black top is extremely ill-fitted. Hope to see a better look next time!

radhiKa aPte
We like the combination of a bralette and a long skirt, but the only problem is that the trend is long gone. Also, Radhika’s bralette and skirt combination looks so boring that it makes us yawn! Her makeup and hair also do nothing for her look — the only saving grace is her bold lip.

Sona MahaPatra
We literally have no words to describe this look as we can’t understand what exactly Sona is wearing. The way she has worn her dupatta or stole on the top of her outfit is absolutely displeasing. She has done an even worse job with her makeup and the only thing working for this look are her black pumps — well, who can go wrong with them?!.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2015 >> There’s nothing wrong with wanting to climb the corporate ladder quickly, but you should also make time for your personal life
My boss recently gave me a new account to handle. It’s a temporary gig because the account is only going to be handled by us for a few months. However, I am already drowning in a pile of work and I think that it was a bit inconsiderate of my boss to give me more! The worst part is that, I feel as though I am doing much more for this new client than I am being paid to do. I feel slighted and I’m considering quitting my job. Is that the right move? — Pooja Shetty, dadar dear Pooja, Before we tell you what to do about this situation, we’d like to point out of a few things. It beats logic that you feel slighted or as though your boss is being inconsiderate. We say this because from what you’ve said, it sounds like your boss trusts your ability to handle extra work. This is something that you should feel happy about. At the same time, you do raise valid points. If you think that the workload is getting too much for you to handle, you should speak to your boss about hiring an intern who can help with work while the new client is on board. As far as your salary is concerned, asking for raise because of a temporary client isn’t the brightest move. You’ll be better off waiting for your yearly appraisals and bringing up the matter then if you still feel underpaid. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

In the fast lane? As far as building a career goes, you can either go slow and steady, or just throw yourself in the fast lane. Dev Goswami recommends you answer the following questions to find your style of working
D
o you want to build a stable, successful career or achieve success (not to mention, rake in the moolah!) at a young age, so that you don’t have to work your entire life? Figuring out whether to rush through your career or take it slow and steady is not easy. However, instead of agonising over where you will be in five years, what you can do is find out about your style of working and see what suits you best. The following questions will help you see whether you like working in a controlled, calculated manner or want to throw yourself into work and achieve it all in a hurry.
b. Are the person who takes the idea to your boss, so that he/she notices the effort you’re making. 4. You’re really overworked. What do you do? a. Get a colleague to help you out. b. Work overtime. 5. When it comes to yearly personnel assessments, what is the one thing that you really look forward to? a. Your boss’s opinion about your work. b. What your new salary is going to be. 6. If you’ve made plans to start a family,
1. A few of your colleagues are planning to talk to the HR department about salary increments. You... a. Decide to focus on your own work. b. Are either leading the group or you make sure that you’re part of it. 2. If your company was forming a new team that was required to work late every day, you would... a. Try to opt out of it. b. Join the team. 3. Your boss sent out a general mail, asking for ideas from the entire team. You... a. Let others handle it and help if someone asks you to.
Mostly As You have a slow, calculated style of working, aimed at building a successful career over the years. While you definitely want to be successful at what you do, you don’t want to give up on your life either. You believe in tackling things as and when they come and you know that you will be able to do so successfully because you have a definitive way of handling tasks. While your style of working is going to give you positive results, remember that in the fast-paced work environment of a metro city, you run the risk of being left behind. There’s no need to overhaul the way you work, but you should also realise that being more proactive can help boost your career prospects work well for you too.
which of the following holds true for you? a. You plan to continue working through motherhood. b. You plan to work and earn enough before you do, and then take a long break to enjoy motherhood. 7. How often do you find the time for yourself and indulge in your hobbies? a. Almost every weekend. b. Only when work at the office is slow. 8. Are you often on leave? a. Yes, every two months. b. You’re saving them for a long vacation. Mostly Bs You are the type of worker who people refer to by using the phrase living in the fast lane. You do want to achieve success, but more than that, you are focussed on getting to the top of your career quickly. Unlike those with Mostly As, you’d rather throw yourself into your work and enjoy life later. Again, we can’t say that your style of working won’t give you the desired results, but you need to remember that it is easy to keep telling yourself that you will enjoy life later — but that later may never come. If you’ve made a plan, make sure that you stick to it. At the same time, it wouldn’t hurt to decrease your workload a little and give your personal life a little more attention.

AD stylish view on’t limit chic accents to just walls or furnishings! If you’ve ever wanted to change how your room looks, but didn’t want to invest time or money on furnishing or furniture upheavals, window dressing is just what you’re looking for. From window shutters and blinds to shades and valances, you can furnish your windows aesthetically with a number of different items. But, picking a favourite can get a little confusing. So, here are a few things to remember when you’re picking out a window treatment.
KeeP IT mINImAl Steer clear of heavy window coverings and use simple shades instead. For example, if you want to use less fabric you can pick upholstered cornice.
Colour it wise Pick trendy colours. Since marsala is the colour of the year, you can use it in your window treatments. Also, if your room is small, use light, cool colours to make it look larger and brighter. Dark, warm colours can make an oversized room cosier and more inviting.
Velvet Velvet, as always, is still in demand. It’s considered the best material for drapery because of its ability to catch light. Also, the material never fails to add grandeur to a living room.
Soften the light
Textures
While a kitchen should be bright, a harsh glare can make it hot and uncomfortable to work in. Soften it with sheer drapes.
Textures and patterns are quite a rage this season. So, don’t shy away from picking geometric patterns, trellis designs, bold colours and large-scale florals. The best part is that you can’t go wrong with any of these.
TReNDS We lOVe While the idea is to keep everything minimalistic when it comes to window treatments, there are several interesting trends that you can try out.
Sheer Who doesn’t love sheer fabric? We love the elegance that it brings to a room. New sheer styles are not frilly or fussy but are subtly iridescent and are interwoven with unexpected materials, or have embossed or printed patterns. Sheers in dramatic colours such as cocoa have also become popular.
long pleats Pleats are becoming softer and longer, to add a more casual, but still contemporary vibe to your windows. You can pick pinch-pleated drapes as they help your room maintain a consistent look, whether they’re open or closed.

mAKING A STYle STATemeNT Nikita Jain, brand experience from Decowindow.in thinks that window treatment is not only becoming increasingly popular, it’s also an important aspect of home décor these days. She explains, “Window treatment is an essential part of home décor. It adds to the essence of a room ,making it the epitome of beauty and style. Curtains, valances, shades and blinds are some ways to treat your window. Shades and blinds are trendy, easy to maintain and functional, whereas curtains are an all-time favourite for window treatment.” Here, she explains five types of treatments to help you get started: n Roman shades: These are easy to maintain and are considered to be the most versatile types of shades. They’re made from fabric, which also helps make them a convenient option, since they can be dry cleaned quite easily. n Roller blinds: These are easy to roll, so they don’t obstruct the view outside. They also roll up completely, and are perfect for those who dislike curtains hanging down near their window frames when they’re drawn open. n Honeycomb shades: The reason these are extremely popular (especially in sunny Mumbai) is because of the cover they provide. The two layers help provide additional insulation. n Shades and drapery combinations: If you want to make your home dressier, using this combination is a good idea as it gives your décor an elaborate twist. n Valances and curtains: A perfect blend of modernity and vintage, using both curtains and valances (a fabric hung over the top of your window that stays there even when the curtain is drawn back) will add pizazz to your interiors.

I was entering a very crowded party two weekends ago. The doorway was jammed with people drinking and laughing and I was having a hard time getting through inspite of my ‘excusemes’ when suddenly from the inside I heard nice and loud... EXCUSE ME! COMING THROUGH! MOVE IT!
No, we don’t mean that you love being a narcissist. But, you may be in love with one and not even realise it! Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to find out if it’s true
The crowd parted and standing there was this guy wearing the same colour of shirt as my dress! I burst our laughing! He asked... Leaving? Arriving!
Y
ou’re having a heart-to-heart with your partner. He’s telling you about the problems that he’s facing in his life or about how his colleagues are hindering his career. And, like anyone would, you see this as odd. You assume that you and your boyfriend are close enough for you to do the same. So, you tell him about all your problems. But, when you do, you feel as though he has stopped listening to what you are saying (or he blows up at you), blaming you for ‘adding to his problems’ by talking about your own issues. If this sounds like a familiar situation, you may be dating a narcissist. Answer the following questions to find out.
He grinned, spun around and held my hand while guiding me through the crowd, dramatically shouting, and said... Well i was leaving...But I want to know who wins the ‘who wore the colour better’ consensus!
1. When you disagree with his opinion or tell him about something that he needs to change or improve about himself, it sends him into a fit of rage. a. True. b. False. He pretty much didn’t leave my side the whole evening!
2. Almost all your fights turn into a battle of who’s right and are never about the actual problem after a while. a. True. b. False. 3. He gets angry or starts to sulk if you fail to notice and compliment him on the new shirt that he’s wearing. a. True. b. False. 4. Between the two of you, he’s the one who decides when you should meet. a. True. b. False. 5. On more than one occasion, he’s refused to go somewhere or do something with you, simply because he doesn’t want to. a. True. b. False. 6. You feel as though you’re the only one who’s making compromises for your relationship. a. True. b. False.
>> Your narcissist partner is likely to stop listening to you in the middle of a conversation
Mostly As If you’ve answered A to most questions (including the last one), you already suspect that your partner is selfish. But, even if you have answered the last question with ‘false’, you should realise that your boyfriend is a narcissist and in the long run, the relationship is going to blow up in your face. If you’re serious about him and don’t want to give up on your relationship, you need to talk to him about how his behaviour is affecting you. Remember that when it comes to people with narcissistic tendencies, talking to them about their shortcomings is easier said than done. So, you’re going to have to be tactful about how you handle it. On the other hand, if you’re in a new relationship and aren’t serious about it, we recommend reconsidering whether this is the kind of guy you want to spend your foreseeable future with. Mostly Bs If you’ve often accused your boyfriend of being selfish, only to have him complain that you’re being unfair, we’ve got news for you — he’s right! Based on your answers, it doesn’t seem as though your boyfriend is a narcissist. Remember that every one is a little selfish — yes, including you — and that’s just part of human nature. However, the fact that you aren’t the only one making compromises and that he’s receptive to your complaints and disagreements, is a sign that you’re in a good, healthy relationship.
« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, My boyfriend often looks at other women when we are out together. I get irritated when I catch him looking, but when he knows that I am frustrated about it, he goes out of his way to look at other women even more — just to mess with me! He doesn’t even hide it. I don’t know what to do, because as hard as I try not to let it affect me, it does! — Rani More, Byculla
Dear Rani, It’s natural for a man’s gaze to gravitate towards women. You wouldn’t want him ogling at guys, would you? You say he goes out
of his way to look at women when he knows you’ve noticed. He’s probably trying to show you that it doesn’t matter who he looks at because he has chosen you. Try not to let jealousy get in the way here. Comparing yourself (it isn’t wise to do so) to women your boyfriend looks at can ruin your self-esteem. If you still feel insecure about his behaviour, tell him about it. Maybe he will stop being silly and focus on you when you are out together. But remember, it’s better for your relationship when he doesn’t feel as though he has to hide things from you. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in
We laughed so much. Suddenly out of the blue I looked at him and thought... no I KNEW! OMG! I love him! This is fate! We ARE a match!! HE IS MY ONE!
Obviously, we had to exchange numbers. And I think he must have lost my number because he didn’t call me the next weekend as promised... So, last weekend I messaged him saying “Hey had a great night. Been thinking of you! Hope to continue our conversation soon!” “its been three days since I messaged. And I realized that I had forgotten to reference where we met or even add my name! I just assumed he saved my number! How do I contact him without coming across as a stalker? I LOVE HIM! Please advice!” CL a) Just message, “Hi, sorry this is CL from... (mention where you met and just allude to something funny you shared)” That’s it. b) Cute story, but you hardly know him! He may be in a relationship or gay or a criminal element or your future husband... But, you need to get to know him first! Ask your mutual friends about him. Perhaps you can meet him casually couple of times and see if wasn’t just a good night. c) If he hasn’t messaged back, he might be busy or uninterested. Deal. LAST WEEK: Ritika S. should pick option C: Is your struggle with her only her fault? Examine your behaviour!

Omar warns against ‘ghettoisation’ of Pandits J
AMMU: Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday expressed his opposition to state and central governments' plans for building 'composite townships' for Kashmiri Pandits saying no one will support 'ghettoisation' in segregated and 'inherently unsafe camps' in the Kashmir Valley. In a series of tweets, Omar made it clear that "no rightminded Kashmiri will oppose the return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homes in the Valley." But at the same time, "no rightminded Kashmiri will support the ghettoisation of Kashmiri Pandits, housed in segregated inherently unsafe camps in the Valley." He expressed doubts if many Pandits will like the idea of separate townships. "I very much doubt very many Kashmiri Pandits would like to return to the Valley just to be housed in ghettos, segregated and isolated," Omar, who is the working President of main opposition National Conference, tweeted. The reactions from Omar came a day after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had asked state Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed for identifying land for creating composite townships for 62,000 displaced pandit families who had left the state at the onset of militancy in early 1990s.

Need to create a framework for future plan of action on securities market resilience, says Sebi Chairman U K Sinha By A Business Reporter
C
apital markets regulator Sebi yesterday said it is worried over state sponsored cyber attacks and has suggested creating a framework for protecting the securities market. "We are worried over state sponsored cyber attacks. There are worries that the vulnerability in markets are increasing. We need to create a framework for future plan of action on securities market resilience," Sebi Chairman U K Sinha said yesterday at a Cyber Security & Resilience conference, organised by Sebi and the BSE. He said cyber attacks are occurring these days in a more sophisticated manner and there is a need to create awareness in the market. "Cyber attacks are very common in financial sector and happening in a greater sophisticated manner. The adoption of new technologies have both advantages as well as chal-
lenges, but we need to create more awareness," Sinha said. The global body for securities regulators, International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) is also working with regulators on how to improve liquidity risk management, he added. According to government data, more than 700 government websites that are hosted under 'gov. In' and 'nic. In' domains, have been hacked by cyber criminals since 2012. Cyber threats will continue to multiply. The advent of the digital world, and the inherent interconnectivity of people, devices and organisations, opens up a whole new playing field of vulnerabilities, according to a Ernst & Young report that was cited during the conference. Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao said: "The growing adoption of internet and smart phones and the rising popularity of online banking, online trading and e-commerce has
made India one of the most favourite counties among cyber criminals. The number of cyber crimes in India may touch 3 lakh in 2015, almost double from the last year." He added: "We need ecosystem to protect the economic sovereignty of the nation. We also need to evolve a full proof cyber security mechanism to protect the economic integrity of our corporates, MNCs, and business organisations." He said there is a need to invest in people, processes and technology to ensure the necessary resilience to quickly detect, act and recover from cyber attacks and that every organisation must have a digital forensic team to prevent and deal with such attacks.
‘India To Lead Investment Inflows In Emerging Asian Economies’ By A Business Reporter
I
ndia will be at forefront of strong investment flows into emerging Asian economies in next few years and more individual Indian investors will approach capital markets for financial advice, International Council of Securities Association Chairman Ian C W Russell said yesterday. Expressing the rationale for inflows ahead of the 28th AGM of International Council of Securities Association (ICSA) to be held here from April 15-17, Russell said: "Attractive private equity investments in the US have steadily been exhausted. Borrowing costs are likely to rise in the near term in the US and bank regulations will restrict lending to leveraged businesses in the US." He, however, cautioned India on the need to alleviate regulatory red tape to facilitate the expansion of offshore wealth management businesses into the Indian economy. The objective of this year's conference is to convey a better understanding of the dynamic financial markets and their role in financing capital formation and economic growth in the country. It will be attended by Rajeev Kumar Agarwal, whole-time member,
Sebi and Tajinder Singh, deputy secretary general, International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Over 40 delegates from France, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Taiwan, Australia, Sweden, Hong Kong, Germany, Denmark, Korea, Hong Kong, Turkey, United Kingdom, Japan, United States will participate in the conference. "The ICSA conference will be a catalyst for more cross border trade as conference participants pass along their understanding and knowledge of both the features and openness of the Indian economy, and business investment opportunities in the country. A key take away for conference delegates will be the prospects for future growth of the Indian economy, and its interaction and contribution to the global economy," Russell, who is also the President and CEO of Investment Industry Association of Canada, said. Drawing a parallel between Indian and Canadian capital markets, Russell said the regulatory framework in both countries is based on the common law tradition in terms of regulations, rules, governance and reliance on disclosure as the key mechanism for investor protection.
Real Estate Regulatory Bill Gets Close To The Finish Line By Anuj Puri
T
he New recommendations on the Real Estate Regulatory Bill were made by the ministry and sent to PMO for approval, and the cabinet has now approved it. Next, it will be tabled in the Parliament for passing the bill and making it an Act. In essence, reduction of minimum balance to be maintained in the escrow account of a project has been reduced from 70% to 50%. This amount from the monies collected from the buyers must be placed in an escrow account within 15 days. ·This provision will effectively allow developers to continue their practice of diverting funds collected for a project towards land acquisition or other projects, and will work in their favour by also allowing them to grow their land and/or project portfolio. However, the 50% mandate will still place enough restriction on developers to divert funds elsewhere and ensure better completion records. For the buyers, the concerns regarding funds diversion will be higher now. The end result is that the bill will be slightly less protectionist towards buyers. Other revisions include bringing in commercial projects under the purview of the bill, which will provide protection to investors of commercial assets, as well. ·The Bill now covers commercial real estate, as well; also, brokers and agents have been now been included under its purview as well, and are effectively rendered pun-
ishable in case of non-compliance with the authority's and tribunal ruling. All under-construction projects have to be compulsorily registered within three months of setting up of the regulator, and developer cannot make changes to original plans or the structural design unless he gets the consent of 2/3rds of the customers. The states have to set up the regulatory bodies within one year of the Bill’s enactment while also setting up a web-based online registration facility within a further period of one year from setting up of the bodies. ·Failure to register a project will cause the developer to attract a penalty of 10% of the overall project cost, and an additional penalty of 10% penalty and/or a three-year prison term in case of continued non-compliance. Incorrect or incomplete disclosures will attract a penalty of 5% of the project cost. Project cancellation has been stated as possibility in case of continued non-compliance. ·One issue pointed out in the bill by stakeholders was that it aimed to place itself as the sole course of action for redressal of grievances by customers, with no recourse to other consumer forums. It was correctly pointed out that such a stance could lead to pressure on this regulatory body in terms of an increased log of cases, though it would certainly reduce instances of multiplicity of suits. This clause has been done away with in the version that the cabinet has cleared, so customers can now seek recourse with consumer courts and forums as well. All projects which have not re-
ceived their completion certificates will also be now covered under the bill, so it now allows bigger umbrella coverage for buyers and investors. ·The Bill will provide a renewed boost to transparency levels in the Indian Real Estate sector. India which lies in the middle in a survey
of 90 countries for the JLL Transparency Index will make further progress up the rankings. This will instil more confidence among global investors, thus providing better access to structured capital for this sector. However, though, the new amended Bill reads very positively for inducing trans-
parency and better governance, the continued non-inclusion of government agencies whose slow approval processes are a major contributors to project delays, remains an issue and needs to be addressed. (The author is Chairman & Country Head, JLL India)
Industry Speak... While we welcome the real estate bill cleared by the Union Cabinet, certain provisions that the sector had asked for amendment remains unattended. We would have preferred escrow limit to be fixed on city basis (metro/tier II) or project basis (luxury/affordable); instead of a blanket 50%. Also, bringing ongoing projects under its ambit at this moment would further delay delivery of a vast number of projects (at various stages of construction) in the country. We also believe developers should be allowed to change design and structure post approval of 50% of consumers since a lot of difficulty arise when a developer begins construction. Lastly, and most importantly, the bill doesn’t fix accountable equally on all stakeholders. While builders face the brunt for project delay; accountability has not been fixed for delays due to regulatory approvals and customers default on payments etc. — Mohit Goel, CEO, Omaxe Ltd.
under the purview of the bill is welcome as both business as well as individuals these days invest in commercial property. Besides, large amount of money flowing from banks to commercial properties also needs protection. — Anubhav Jain, Director, Group Silverglades While the establishment of a real estate regulator is a positive step in increasing transparency and credibility of builders while protecting the consumers, it will only be valuable if and only if government authorities are also legally bound to grant approvals within a specified time period. — Prashant Solomon, MD, Chintels India and Member, Governing Council, CREDAI NCR
“We welcome the passing of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill as it will reduce the With the government at the Centre finally passing number of casual / non professional builders operthe Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, ating in the industry. We also hope that it will give the real estate industry might finally expose the customers the confidence to commit to buying new builders with bad intent and prove to be a boon for homes with the comfort that their largest investment the buyers. The need to have an detailed regulation decision is now protected by a regulator. We enand a strong regulator for a disciplined growth of the courage the government to also bring EDC charges real estate sector cannot be overstated. The Real Es- paid to local authorities under the scope of the regtate Bill, after including the latest changes, is fairly ulator to ensure timely delivery of infrastructure that comprehensive and, if implemented strictly, it will has been paid for by home buyers.” pave the way for real growth of the sector. TV TATTLE MUSICAL GENIUS
They say nothing can make you nostalgic like a mesmerizing musical note that magically transports you to your good old days. RD Burman’s music is exactly that as he is responsible for so many lives to connect with their younger sentimental voice. Pancham Da showed the traits of a musical genius even when he was in his cradle. Born to the illustrious music director Sachin Dev Burman, young Pancham Da promised his father that his success would one day supersede his father’s accomplishments. Not only did he achieve that at a younger age but he also outperformed his father in leaps and bounds. Pancham Da’s steps towards success became visible at the age of nine when on his father’s request; he managed to create 15 musical melodies in just two days. The legendary tune for ‘Sar jo tera chakraaye’ was composed by Pancham in his tween years. And this legend of golden era went on to become one of the most formidable figures in the history of Indian music. Zee Classic pays tribute to 75 years of musical genius in ‘RD Night’ on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 1 pm!

ew Delhi: Rajeev Khandelwal says he was desperately waiting for a promising script to make a comeback on TV after a gap of three years. The 'Left Right Left' actor, who will be seen on a new TV show 'Reporters', will be donning the role of a senior journalist opposite actress Kritika Kamra. Much before the show's launch on April 13, it's promo -- where Rajeev is kissing trainee reporter Kritika on camera -- had created a lot of buzz. "I was not sceptical about the kissing. The promo is not about the kiss, it rather gives a message that women should not bear any kind of harassment at the work place and that's why she slaps him at the end. While shooting it too, we were very chilled out about it," Rajeev said during the promotion of the Sony show in the capital. Directed by filmmaker Goldie Behl and produced by his sister Srishri Arya of Rose Audio Visuals Pvt Limited, the show revolves around the life of journalists with a love story. "This show is not about news. It's about personal relationships. The show also focuses on the news room before and after going live. It is a first attempt of its kind on Indian television," Rajeev said. Asked if it is an adaptation of American television series "The Newsroom", Rajeev said, "No it is not. It is a completely fresh script." The actor, who also has a career in Bollywood, was in Goa when Goldie called him and discussed the idea with him. "I always wanted to do something different on TV and probably that could be the reason why I took such a long break from it. I was excited to do the role and play somebody whom we come across everyday," he said. Rajeev was not nervous to play the senior reporter. "I have always been grilled for whatever decision or show I have made. I am not nervous at all because I have full faith in the research team of the show and Goldie himself is a news buff." To master the character, Rajeev chose not to imitate any popular TV journalists in India. "We have many great journalists in India but I intentionally didn't copy anyone. I wanted to give my approach to it and relied on my director completely," he said.
ANCHORING DEBUT
Asha Negi seems to be following the footsteps of her boyfriend Rithvik Dhanjani as we hear that the actress has signed her first show as an anchor. Negi will be seen co-anchoring 'Indian Idol Junior' with Hussain while her beau is going to be anchoring 'Nach Baliye' on a rival channel. Both Hussain and Asha are currently competing in 'Fear Factor' and now will be seen sharing the stage together. When we contacted Asha, she confirmed saying, "I've always loved music and so when this opportunity came my way I couldn't resist. It's the first show I'll be anchoring and 'Idol' seemed perfect. Kids these days are so talented and I'm hoping to learn lots on stage from them. It's going to be fun and exciting but at the same time a great learning experience."

Tarul Swamy who is currently seen playing Sanjeev Agarwal in 'Hello Pratibha' on Zee turned a year older on April 3. He says, "Age is just a number! My friends had come over to my place where we cut a cake and celebrated. I got t-shirts, shirts, chocolates and lot of birthday wishes. My wish list is to buy a sports car. I remember when my family and my friends give me surprises on my birthday those were the best days. I want to grow in my career and life; I want to be healthy and happy". On being asked what’s the best birthday gift he got he says, "I got a lovely dog and I have named him Dum dum. It has been gifted by dear friend Anirudh Dave and we belong to the same cit,y Jaipur"
NEW LOOK
Roop Durgapal has gone for a total makeover. Says the actress, who recently quit telly show 'Balika Vadhu', “I have been spending all my free time working out and honing my singing skills. Gymming has helped me lose oodles of weight. I have also coloured my hair in a lighter shade and cut it stylishly. You see, I had started getting bored of my natural jet black tresses. In short, I wanted to look different from my character in 'Balika Vadhu'.” She is happy that her friends and family have liked her new look. Interestingly, though Roop has taken a break from acting, she is busier than before. Says she, “I took this break thinking I will get a lot of free time, but it has not been so. I have been busy attending events in India and abroad. At a recent fashion show in Dubai, I walked the ramp for renowned desi and Pakistani designers. Later, I rushed to Indore for a political event. I have also been shooting for print and TV commercials.”

HENNAI: The most consistent team across all seasons of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings would look to put behind the offfield distractions and do what they are best at when they take on previous edition's bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils in their opening match of the Twent20 league here today. The Super Kings were hounded by the spot-fixing scandal, in which their Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was indicted by a Supreme Court-monitored probe committee last year. But the team, which has made the last four in each of the previous seven Indian Premier League seasons, including four straight final appearances and two titles, still managed to reach the second qualifier. This edition is expected to be no different as they start afresh under the able leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming once again. Such is their might that three years without a title is being considered a trophy drought and they would look to bounce back and silence the critics. They have managed to retain the nucleus of the side and have invested in Irfan Pathan, Michael Hussey, Kyle Abott, Rahul Sharma. Boosted by the presence of New Zealand's Brendon McCullum, who had a fabulous World Cup recently, and Dwayne Smith at the top of the order, CSK should not face any problem getting off a swift start. The middle order too, looks all settled with the likes of Suresh Raina, Hussey, Dhoni,

In case, these big names fail to fire, CSK have all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin down the order to finish the job with the bat. As far as their bowling is
concerned, the presence of Jadeja and Ashwin in spin department is a big plus, while pace bowlers Kyle Abbott, new import Matt Henry from New Zealand and Mohit Sharma are capable seamers. Besides all-rounder Dwayne
Bravo have shown variations of pace, furious hitting and swift fielding that has swung matches for CSK in the past. The Daredevils, on the other hand, have once again gone for a complete overhaul of their side, but managed to bring in a few big names during the high-profile IPL auction. Showing a lot of belief in India discard Yuvraj Singh, 33, the Delhi outfit purchased him for a record Rs. 16 crore after intense bidding among four franchises. The team, which finished at the bottom of the table in the last two seasons, would be banking heavily on Yuvraj to deliver with his all-round abilities. Besides Yuvraj, they have also invested in a 36-year-old fast bowler Zaheer Khan, who is also desperate to make a comeback to the Indian national team one last time. Under the captaincy of Jean-Paul Duminy, the team would be preparing to turn
its fortunes around in the 2015 season. Wicketkeeperbatsmen Quinton de Kock of South Africa and Mayank Agarwal are a good opening option, followed by Duminy, Yuvraj, Kedar Jadhav, Albie Morkel in the middle order. Their batting also runs deep like CSK and it would be interesting to see how well these big names live up to their reputation. In Yuvraj and star Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews, the Daredevils will have the necessary X-factor. The Sri Lankan captain, however, will miss today's tie because of a ban on the Lankan players by the Tamil Nadu government. On the bowling front, South Africa leg-spinner Imran Tahir would look to replicate his World Cup show, while India's consistent pacer Mohammad Shami will partner the highly experienced Zaheer in the pace department. They look a strong team on paper but it remains to be seen whether they better their 2012 show where they crashed out in the play-offs.
DD skipper Duminy gives CSK the upper hand C
HENNAI: With a newlook side at his disposal, Delhi Daredevils skipper Jean-Paul Duminy conceded that two-time champions Chennai Super Kings have an upper hand in their opening game of the IPL, here today. "Definitely CSK has an upper hand going by their track record in the IPL. They have been a consistent performing team through out the IPL editions. OnYuvraj Singh's lack of international presence for a while, Duminy said, "It does not matter if he has not been part of the Indian side. He is a match winner and a strong all-rounder. I have no doubt in this IPL that Yuvraj will win games on his own. We have seen that time and time again that he has put in big performances in IPL events. And I know he takes lot of pride in his own performance. I have no doubt that we can expect some big things from him representing Delhi this year." On the team's chances, he said, "We should find a way to get two full points from tomorrow match. We spoke today about getting dirty and
putting our bodies on the line. Look there is no guarantee in results but we have to give our best. We have had a really good week of preparation before coming here. We have got a fair idea of our strengths and weaknesses. It is all about how we are going to get our two points, whether ugly or pretty." Duminy admitted that the nine-match losing streak in the last edition is surely on the minds of the players and they will work hard towards changing their fortunes. "We have been talking about it. We know that it is a reality. There is no point in shying away from it. We have got to accept the fact that we were well below par last season.
29 Irfan Pathan gets injured once again, set to miss first game
C
HENNAI: Injuries seem to be a permanent companion of India discard Irfan Pathan as the Baroda all-rounder has again reported unfit even before the ball has started rolling for Chennai Super Kings, who will be taking on Delhi Daredevils in their opening IPL encounter today. Pathan, who was bought by CSK was training for the past few days, has again sustained an injury and chief coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that the left-arm seamer will not be available for selection against Daredevils. "Irfan Pathan is not fit. Another pacer Andrew Tye is also carrying an injury. They won't be considered for selection at this stage. Their progress will be assessed on a day to day basis," Fleming confirmed at the pre-match media conference. Pathan has had various injuries ranging from hamstring, knee, calf muscle etc and the list is endless. On a lighter note, Fleming was asked about another veteran left-armer Ashish Nehra and the coach had a lot of good words about the former India player. "We have a trend reviving older players. Nehra still has some life left. People focus on youth. But I like experience. Nehra and Hussey are key components in our side. The knowledge they can pass on is immense. The MS Dhoni and Raina factor will be crucial. I like their work and attitude." Talking about seamers in the team, Fleming stressed on the need to rotate the players. "The pacers in our squad is quite well rested. Only Mohit Sharma has had a full campaign. It's the same with the overseas seamers. They didn't have a full campaign. But this being a demanding tournament, we need to rotate them and keep them fresh." It will be Fleming's seventh year as CSK coach and as usual there are some nervous jitters before the first ball is bowled. "The first game is always a challenge and it sets the tone. If you play well, it is a bonus." The former New Zealand captain was all praise for coach Gary Kirsten and captain JP Duminy.
I ALWAYS LOVE THE CHALLENGE OF BOWLING AGAINST AB: JOHNSON 30

ew Delhi: After playing a crucial role in Australia's World Cup victory, Mitchell Johnson is now training his eyes on the challenge of bowling to the fearsome AB de Villiers when Kings XI Punjab take on RCB in the eighth edition of Indian Premier League. Johnson, who will once again spearhead the KXIP attack, termed De Villiers as the "best batsman across most formats" and someone who is a formidable opponent. He listens to what I am saying as I find it important for a youngster to be able to listen to what a senior guy is saying. I am also impressed with new guy Shardul," added Johnson, who has 283 Test wickets, 239 ODI scalps apart from 38 T20 victims. For one of world's fastest bowlers, it is important to "talk to the youngsters and play a leading role" during the upcoming seven weeks of cash-rich league. Johnson feels that there isn't much difference between bowling in ODIs and T20 cricket as "one format rolls into another" with the amount of international cricket that's played these days. Zavaray’s dream of night racing now on brink of reality
I
t is a well-known fact that evening racing has been Zavaray Poonawalla’s dream of many years which he has along with all the committee members finally brought into action. Is it on schedule and how does he feel about it? “Yes indeed the evening racing experiment is on schedule and as of now is due to take place this month on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th. This project is very special to me and my family, as it has been our dream since the last 20 years. In fact it is one of the many reasons for me to get into the committee as I realize that without the support of all the committee members jointly, this would not be possible. Just before the elections, Ram Shroff, Geoffrey Nagpal and myself discussed this project and they proposed that if I get into the committee, we would all come together and form a

working group to take up the evening racing project.” Mr. Jaydev Mody has been supportive and has taken interest in this project along with the other committee members and the working group members. Evening racing obviously is not easy and simple as apart from several intricacies as it also involves substantial costs, Dr. Shashi Chand Jain and Vivek Jain were earlier skeptical to take it up as they had felt that this would be a financially non-viable project. However, with the support of the entire team clubbed together with common interests and views, the Jains too have extended their fullest support to the project. Committed efforts and hardwork of the entire team have gone into making this trial project possible, the success and feasibility of which is to be
seen in due course. No doubt this venture is new and is being tried for the first time in Indian Racing but with all members coming together and putting in their 100 percent, I see no reason why this project would not achieve desired results. Can you let us know of the proceedings for those two days? There will be 3 races under floodlights on both the days – 1st at dusk i.e. 7pm, 2nd at 7.30 and 3rd at 8pm. Every effort is being made to provide convenience and comfort to racegoers during the evening races. Food and beverages will be available and sufficient lighting arrangements have been made in the stands.” We all look forward to this big trial for the good of horse racing in India and we keep our fingers crossed and hope that this event goes through smoothly.

Local players in IPL have outstanding talent: Williamson
N
By Faisal Kamal
ew Delhi: Relishing every bit of the IPL experience in his debut season, SunRisers Hyderabad's New Zealand import Kane Williamson is mighty impressed by the local talent available in the Sun TVowned side. Apart from the big Indian names in Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma and Naman Ojha, the side also boasts of rising talent like Parvez Rasool, Karn Sharma and Lokesh Rahul. The David Warner-led side though relies heavily on foreign muscle with the likes of Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan, Dale Steyn, Trent Boult and Williamson part of the SRH squad. But the Kiwi batsman insists that the international players can certainly learn a thing or two from local talent. "Great to meet all the guys. Obviously you see these guys in world cricket and some of whom I have played against and now to be playing with them it feels good. And also the Indian players, the local players who are outstandingly talented. So it's great to meet
them as well. "We all share our experiences and get the best knowledge of these conditions. Some of them haven't played international cricket, so a lot for us to learn. We can all sit and chat about our experiences at the international arena," Williamson said. Having made his debut in 2010 during the Ahmedabad Test, Williamson also played a key role for Northern Knights in the Champions League T20 last year. "I have been fortunate to have been to India a few times to play cricket. So it's nice to be back. The Indian public is so passionate about the sport and so that makes it a great place to play," he said. Bagged by SRH in February auctions for Rupees 60 lakh, Williamson sees the IPL opportunity as a big one in terms of his cricket career. "It is recognised as one of the biggest tournaments in the world. I think that the passion behind the sport in this country is like no other and that's what brings the hype to a tournament like this.”

ONGC overcome Karnatak SA

UMBAI: ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation) did well to score a 2-0 win against Karnatak Sporting Association (KSA) in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15, played at the Cooperage ground on Wednesday. The olimen taking time to settle down survived a couple of anxious moments. But, to their good fortune the KSA strikers Arhi Uchenna and Roger Sam failed to score from ideal situations early in the first half. The ONGC strik-
ers made no such mistake and capitalised on the chances that came their way to clinch the win. First Lavino Fernandes broke the deadlock when he found the net in the 27thminute and then captain Kailash Patil hit the target in the 40th minute for the second goal as ONGC went into the break with a 2-0 advantage. After switching ends, ONGC held sway but were unable to add to the tally. KSA tried their best to get back into the match but were unable to create goal-scoring chances and had to end up on the losing side.

ew Delhi: Talented South African left-hander David Miller's career has been on the upswing after his spectacular 38-ball hundred for Kings XI Punjab against RCB during the 2013 IPL and he admits that his stint with the franchise "has made him a better batsman". Asked if he feels any difference for the better as he starts his third season in IPL with Kings XI Punjab, Miller replied in positive. "Yeah definitely. I feel I have improved as a batsman. I have learnt to do the right things and that adds to my confidence. But I won't call myself a finished product. I am still lucky to be learning everyday in my endeavour to get better," Miller told PTI during an interaction. For Miller, performing for Kings XI Punjab has been a "huge high" as his batting against spinners has also improved. "IPL is a big tournament and performing for KXIP gives me a huge high. Over the past few seasons, I have learnt to assess various situations and play accordingly," said the left-hander, who has played 71 ODIs and 31 T20 Internationals for South Africa. Miller thinks the advantage that KXIP has is having retained the same core group of players that took the team to final last year. "The key will be about sticking to the basics. Our advantage is having the same team. It helps in preparing the strategy as you know the strengths of your team. We have to follow up our last year's performance with an even stronger show this time. We will also have to manage our training sessions well," opined the stylish southpaw from KwaZulu Natal. The two most destructive T20 batsmen -- AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis -- will also be plying their trade for RCB and CSK respectively but 25-year-old Miller feels that there is no competition between him the two other senior players.
I feel I have improved as a batsman. I have learnt to do the right things and that adds to my confidence. But I won't call myself a finished product. I am still lucky to be learning everyday in my endeavour to get better.
DAVID MILLER
"AB and Faf have both performed really well in IPL over the years but I am focussing on my own gameplan. I wish both of them well for their respective franchises. I don't want to put myself under any undue pressure with comparisons," said Miller. On personal front, Miller is carrying the confidence of having done decently well in the World Cup with a total of 324 runs in eight matches at a decent average of 54, which includes a 138 against Zimbabwe. "I am really confident about my form and hope to do well but then cricket is a funny game. For me, the key will be to remain switched on in every single game, follow my own gameplan and the will to do well," Miller said with a note of caution.
Mohun Bagan split points with Shillong Lajong ARASAT: Young Debjit B Majumder once again proved his worth under the bar as Mohun Bagan had to settle for a goalless draw against a spirited Shillong Lajong FC at the Vidyasagar Krirangan here today. Mohun Bagan had their best chance in the secondhalf but their Haitian recruit Sony Norde's 75th minute freekick hit the crosspiece to break their hearts as they had to settle for one point. The green and maroon brigade, however, remained atop the standings,
unbeaten so far and with a three point lead over defending champions Bengaluru FC (22) with two matches in hand. The Shillong outfit that routed Mumbai FC 6-0 in their last outing occupied eighth place with 11 points from as many matches. The visitors also looked threatening and had a brilliant chance to snap Mohun Bagan's unbeaten run in the 78th minute but Cornell Glen pulled his shot wide after Majumder was caught in no man's land. The Northeast outfit
started dominating the show and had their first real chance in the 20th minute but Majumder came in the way as the young Mohun Bagan custodian thwarted many Shillong attempts to keep their slate clean. But it was a transformed Mohun Bagan after the break as they came out all guns blazing and created some real good chances. Durga Boro fouled Katsumi Yusa in the middle of the park and Norde stepped up to take the freekick but crosspiece came in the way of Mohun Bagan's win.

INDIA CONCEDE LATE GOAL AGAINST MALAYSIA, CRASH OUT OF TITLE RACE

POH (MALAYSIA): India yet again paid the price of some sloppy defending and conceded a late goal to lose 2-3 to lower-ranked Malaysia and crash out of the title race of the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament yesterday. As has been the story in this tournament for India, the Sardar Singh-led side wasted numerous scoring opportunities and their fragile backline broke down under pressure at crucial junctures. India conceded a goal with two minutes remaining in the match to lose the match. Faizaal Saari (17th minute), Haziq Samsul (35th) and Shahrun Abdullah (58th) scored the goals to hand Malaysia their first win in the tournament after two consecutive defeats. For India, Rupinder Pal Singh (20th, 51st) converted two penalty corners for India but it was not enough to give new chief coach Paul van Ass his first taste of victory. urday, while Malaysia will be up against Korea today. The match began after almost an hours delay after heavy rains and lightening struck the stadium minutes before the scheduled start. Compared to their first two games, the Indians did not have the best of starts as Malaysia fought stick to stick to give their opponents some tough time. The initial few minutes of the match was a midfield slugfest as both the tams tried hard to take control of the proceedings. The Malaysians looked sharper and threatening and were the first to attempt on the goal but Faizal Saar's reverse hit in the fifth minute was just off the target. In the 11th minute, Satbir Singh squandered a bright chance when he failed to capitalize on a pass by fumbling the opportunity inside the opposition circle. Minutes later, V R Raghunath set it up for Akashdeep Singh with some brilliant stick work but the latter's reverse hit was kept out by an agile Malaysian goalkeeper Kumar Subramiam, who is playing in his 250th international match. poh (Malaysia): Fitness is key to any team's success in fast-paced modern-day hockey and the Indian men's national team can be rated among the top five fittest sides in the world currently, said the country's Australian physical trainer Matthew Eyles. Eyles, who took over as India's scientific advisor (strength and conditioning) 18 months ago from countrymate Jason Conrath, feels even though there is still room for improvement, India can now match the fitness levels of teams like Australia and New Zealand on the turf. "Physically they (Indian players) have improved a lot. When I got here 18 months ago, they were good, lot of them were very good natural athletes but now they have developed a good base. I think any strength and conditioning coach can't feel content, they always want more from their athletes," Eyles told PTI in an interview. "Their speed is good, endurance in good. They are

Asked where India currently stands in the world map in terms of fitness, Eyles said: "I don't think we are the fittest side at the moment. It's hard to compare. Australia and New Zealand are always physically good sides. But I think we can definitely match any team now. In my opinion definitely we can consider India among top five nations on fitness front in world hockey."
But the transformation really started four years back when Michael Nobbs was appointed India coach and soon after taking charge he roped in fellow Australian David John as the trainer. Eyles said since joining the team he did not do anything magical but just focused on the basics. "When I arrived here I first assessed the fitness level of the players and then followed standard process. I just tried to develop their base and then build them up from there.”
minute and Saari made full use of the chance by converting it with a low powerful flick to the left of India custodian P R Sreejesh. Minutes later, another defensive error, this time by Rupinder, gave Malaysia another golden chance but Sreejesh came to India's rescue by denying Saari. In the very next move, India secured their first penalty corner which was perfectly converted by Rupinder to level the scores. India had another chance soon with S K Uthappa and Gurbaj Singh setting it up for Satbir with a fine one-two but the striker hit straight to the Malaysian goalkeeper.
Ramandeep Singh's poor show in the tournament continued as he missed an open chance two minutes from halfway break. With ample time to pick his spot, an unmarked Ramandeep hit the ball straight to the Malaysian goalkeeper from close range as both the team went into the breather locked at 1-1. The Indians continued to miss chances, as four minutes into the second half Akashdeep shot wide from top of the D. Sloppy defending inside their circle cost India dearly as Malaysia restored their lead in the 35th minute through Haziq Samsul's field effort. India got another penalty
corner in the third quarter but Rupinder wasted the chance. Trailing by a goal, India came out with all guns blazing in the fourth quarter and managed to earn three penalty corners in quick succession, the last of which was converted by Rupinder. It was open, end to end hockey in the last 10 minutes of the game as both the teams went for the offensive in search of the winner. India gave everything for the winner and in the 54th minute came close to securing the lead by the striking duo of Akashdeep and Ramandeep but failed to get a stick to Gurbaj's brilliant cross from the right flank.
