5 SIMI men may be planning terror strikes on instructions of Pak’s spy agency ISI
N
EW DELHI: High alert has been sounded across India that five members of the banned SIMI, who had fled from a Madhya Pradesh jail in 2013, are planning to carry out terror strikes on instructions of Pakistan's spy agency ISI. Based on the inputs provided by the central intelligence agencies, all states have been asked to look for Mohammad Aijajudden, Mohammad Aslam, Amjad Khan, Zakir Hussain Sadiq and Mehboob
Guddu, who have been given the task to carry out terrorist attacks, official sources told PTI. Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have been specifically alerted and told that the terrorists could be hiding in the three states, they said. "Unn logon ko aacha project diya hain, kuch din intezar karo (These people have been given an important project. Wait for sometime)," one of the intercepted conversations of an ISI official

with its former ally and would join Congress in raising various issues related to farmers in both houses. Taking a dig at Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse, Pawar said, “He was talking about drought-like situation in state, but why the government was not officially declaring drought as the situation was really grim and farmers were committing suicides every day. Not only cotton, soyabean, sugarcane and rice farmers, but even milk and fruit producers are in big trouble”. Giving a call for coordination between opposition parties, he said effective floor management would be needed in both Houses to forcefully raise the issues. “We met with the CM about a week back on farmers' issues and also handed him a representation of demands. Now, since fuel prices have been heavily slashed in international markets, NDA government has earned good revenue. The Fadnavis government should demand funds from the Centre for farmers. They must be given waivers on existing loans and power bills, and Rs 50,000 per hectare aid to fight drought,” Pawar added.
T
he NCP has its own way of getting things done. The party which has formally claimed the post of leader of the opposition in the legislative council has proposed the name of Dhananjay Munde, the nephew of late Gopinath Munde. Dhananjay Munde's cousin, Pankaja Munde, is the Women and Child Welfare Minister in Devendra Fadnavis government. Dhananjay was in BJP but quit the party and joined NCP. Now the NCP has decided to project this OBC leader in the upper house of the legislature. As declared on Sunday the NCP staked its claim to the leader of the opposition's post. The NCP has largest number of MLCs and the party is all set to get this post. The announcement of Munde's name by the NCP has created a flutter in the BJP camp. Aggressive Munde will take on the ruling Shiv Sena and BJP in the house. Speaking to reporters over this issue, NCP leader Ajit Pawar said, “Except for the leader of the opposition's post, NCP didn't have any differences

On October 1, 2013, the five, along with Faisal, the leader of the gang, and another prisoner, made an audacious escape from the district jail in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh after scaling a 14-foot wall. from Barwani in Madhya Pradesh, the five accused are still at large. Interestingly, Mehboob's mother Najma Bee has disappeared from their home in Khandwa a few months ago and is believed to be hiding along with her son. The suspects' footprints have been found in Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The group is suspected to be involved in a bank robbery in Karim-
nagar (Telangana) on February 1, 2014, blast in a Bangalore-Guwahati train at the Chennai Central station that killed a young software engineer, on May 1, 2014 and the July 10, 2014 explosion near Faraskhana and Vishrambag police stations in Pune. The five were jailed in the first place in June 2011 on charges of murdering policemen, attempts to murder, bank robberies and for inciting communal tension while working for terror group SIMI.

S
RINAGAR: Telling people of Kashmir that he wanted to share their pain and anguish, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought "one chance" for BJP to rule and to rid the state of Congress and "two dynasties" of National Conference and PDP. "What have you seen in Kashmir in the last 30 years? Either it was Congress government or father-son (National Conference) government or father-daughter (PDP) government. You have seen all three types of govt. "For themselves, they got everything but did nothing for you. Get rid of all three of them for once and give me one chance to serve you. I will make your dreams my own. I will put my entire government at your service," he said. "Enough is enough .. Corruption has destroyed Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorism has ended but corruption has not. The biggest challenge we face is to end corruption. Unless corruption ends, the common man in Kashmir cannot progress," he said. In his 30-minute speech, Modi invoked Atal Behari Vajpayee's concepts of communal harmony, humanity and democracy to share the pain of Kashmiris and promised to take the state to new heights. "People of Kashmir have given me a lot of trust and love. I will repay this love and trust with interest in the form of development. I can die for this love and trust showered on me," he said.

This harsh punishment is being meted out to students with a view to put a full stop to use of cellphones in the college premises
W
hile colleges have restricted the use of mobile phones in the premises, they have now started confiscating cell phones for a period of one year along with a fine of Rs 1000 which is not refundable. But this strict rule has not gone down well with parents and students as they state that the cell phone is the only mode of communication between parents and children during emergencies. According to the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, colleges cannot implement monetary punishments on students. Colleges across Mumbai have been implementing monetary fines along with punishments as per their desire. Earlier, colleges used to fine the students on a scale of Rs 250 to Rs 500 for the use of mobile phones in the college campus. Now, colleges have been confiscating the phones for a whole year. The SIM card and the memory storage card is returned to the student, and mobile handset is withheld by the college. A receipt is also issued to the student along with a fine of Rs 5001000. A student can only claim the mobile phone from the college after the completion of a whole year. Colleges also ensure that there will be no damage or loss to the phones. A student from a college in western suburbs told the ADC, “It is unfair to confiscate the mobile phone for a whole year by the college. If we students are fined, we understand our mistake as we have to pay

During emergencies we will be unable to communicate with family and friends”. In July 2013, Maharashtra Government had sought the views of principals and teachers on a proposal seeking ban on using mobile phones with cameras in colleges and university campuses across the state to prevent “cyber crimes”. The joint director of higher education had sought views of college heads and teachers on this proposal via a letter sent in May.
The proposal also involved mandatory installation of jammers and decoders in campuses of educational institutions, Mumbai University sources said following the joint director’s letter, Mumbai University (MU) issued a circular to affiliated colleges on June 25 seeking their opinion. When the ADC spoke to Pradeep Sawant, Students Grievance Cell, he said: “A college cannot impose monetary punishments on students according to the rules. No college is allowed to carry out such activities and those found doing so will be punished. Students should complain to the Students Grievance Cell which will take immediate action against the college. “

For sex workers, by sex workers
Madam Bandaval has come up with a school for prostitutes in Dussehra Chowk, Sangli.
Prostitution is one of the oldest and largest unorganised trades in India. Some join the sector out of financial weaknesses and some because of other commitments. Society looks down upon them and refuses to look beyond their profession. Many of these sex workers are illiterate and can’t even write their own names. However, Madam Bandaval school in Sangli, Maharashtra is now making a difference. This is India's only school for sex workers, by sex workers. Madam
Bandaval runs her school in Dusshera Chowk with dignity and determination. Facing opposition and ridicule, she is the only one to have started a school in a red light area in India. Education for everyone, without any discrimination, is her goal. The school is helping these women get basic education. The school continues to struggle with getting teachers. Ostracised by society, these women need to be educated. When Madam Bandaval came up
with the idea of starting a school in a red light area, it was mocked upon. Why to educate the sex workers who are 40-50 years of age? The answer lies in the fact that after seven to eight years of schooling, they can sign, manage their bank account and savings, travel easily and of course are more aware of their basic rights. Also, the kids born into this atmosphere don’t deserve to be in such chaos and abuse. They deserve a well-educated environment and respectable jobs in future rather than a future where these innocent victims will have to become prostitutes or pimps or will have to fetch liquor for the ‘customers’. Today, thanks to Madam Bandaval, there might be hope for a better tomorrow for them. We too need to rethink our attitudes.
Mystery of the green cat
signed up to bring justice to his alleged attackers, and news of the fluorescent stray went viral across the globe. But it has now been revealed that the cat has developed a green hue because it usually sleeps on an abandoned heap of synthetic green paint in a garage. By licking his fur, he has spread the green all over his body. That didn’t sound quite right to, because cats cannot lick or reach their spines well. But if you look closely, you’ll see that the cat’s spine is only lightly tinted green. It still looks like a special effect This has been backed up by reports which say the stray cat becomes more green each day. A
video has appeared on YouTube which shows the feline playing with a ginger cat, whose marmaladecoloured coat stands in stark contrast to the bright-green fur. Varna is a popular tourist destination as it is the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. The RSPCA has warned that dyeing or painting animals for cosmetic reasons could have 'potentially fatal consequences'. A Bulgarian commenter says the cat, although unfriendly, is a celebrity in Varna and gets plenty of food, and has also been checked out by a veterinarian. No doubt his cat buddies also benefit from the attention.
Stalking along the backstreets and failing miserably to blend into the background, the sight of this emerald-coloured stray has caused an uproar in the Black Sea resort town of Bulgaria. You might first jump to conclusions and say the cat's photo has been edited until you see another cat near him, seemingly normal. Locals in Varna, Bulgaria, assumed the cat was the victim of a cruel prank by vandals and set up a Facebook group called 'Punishment to the the perpetrator GOING GREEN: This cat has gone green, as it sleeps on a heap of synthethic green paint, that has been absorbed by the cat’s body, making it the focus of all attention. of this criminal act'. nion Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Raosaheb Danve, is tipped to become the next state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president. His appointment to the state post is expected to be ratified at the party's state executive meeting to be held some time in January 2015 at Aurangabad. The election to the post of the state BJP president has been necessitated with the incumbent Devendra Fadnavis having become the Chief Minister of the state. As per the party's constitution, party leaders cannot occupy more than one post at a time and have to resign from their earlier post. Danve (59) is a union minister in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi cabinet. Party sources disclosed that Danve was never comfortable and
Raosaheb Danve could not put up with the fast paced work style of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another factor that party sources disclosed that went against him was his inability to deliver results in the last six months as union minister. Danve has been considered a
loyalist of the late Pramod Mahajan – Gopinath Munde camp. Party sources added that Danve's appointment is being seen as an attempt to keep a check on the political ambitions of the Minister for Rural Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe in Maharashtra. By appointing him as the state BJP president, the party can claim to have made a Maratha community leader as the state party president. The name of Danve was discussed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the meeting of party MLAs held ahead of the trust vote on November 12. Fourth term Lok Sabha MP from Jalna, Danve was MLA from Bhokardhan in the state legislative Assembly before he took office in the Centre. His son Santosh Danve is the youngest MLA representing his father's constituency in the current legislative Assembly.

he incident in which a driver of an Uber cab was arrested for raping an executive, on Sunday in Delhi, has brought out the fact that the claims of the private cab companies to be womenfriendly are false. The ADC looked into the safety precau-
tions taken by the pivate cab companies in Mumbai and also viewed the steps taken by the transport department to ensure safety of Mumbaikars. Siddhartha Pahwa, CEO, Meru Cabs said, “Every driver of Meru Cab has to get police verification done, we get the address confirmed by sending registered post. Meru maintains a biometric record of the drivers and all their documents like licence, car documents etc. Each driver has to undergo 4 days' train-
ing and special course to deal with women passengers at Meru Training Academy. Additionally, we have used technology to track each and every trip. Consumers can register for “Trip Tracker facility”, it provides the passenger's trip details to a trusted person assigned by the passenger.”
Jagdish Purohit, Managing Director, TABcab said, “The drivers of the company come from a poor background and always have the fear of losing their livelihood, hence till date no such event has taken place. The permit and badge have a huge asset value. The drivers know that all their movements including speed, etc are being monitored, hence the fear of being tracked always remains. The very reason where public transport vehicles are driven by badge holders only unlike
Uber or other private cab companies. Speaking to the ADC, Mahesh Zagade, Transport Commissioner said, “Safety of a woman or any passenger cannot be compromised and companies like Uber, Ola have their own GPS systems where they are informed about every moment of their cabs. We are trying to do the same though it is a long process. However, we are going to implement it soon, wherein a vehicle, when it comes out of the manufacturing unit needs to be installed with the latest technology – either GPS or anything – in this way we will be able to keep track of every vehicle's movement in the city.” K T Golani, Secretary, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) said, “If a driver has misbehaved with a passenger and the passenger complains, the complaint gets registered with the prosecution department of the RTO, the taxi owner's permit is suspended, the driver's licence and a fee of Rs 1,000 is charged from him. Training of the drivers and teaching them how to behave properly with the passengers has to be done by the unions; we give them basic knowledge and try our best to give them the knowledge how to treat the passengers. Because of restrictions of manpower we are not able to train them. However we will begin training sessions soon.”

wo days after the design for the new wing of the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla was selected, a new controversy seems to be emerging as MNS corporator Sanita Naik has raised her voice over this issue through a letter she wrote to municipal chief Sitaram Kunte. Naik, in the letter, states that the museum is right next to the Ranibaug and that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the whole and sole owner of this museum. The civic body had leased the museum to the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation for caretaking at a very negligible amount almost making it a gift to the foundation. The new wing to the city's oldest museum is expected to be ready by 2018 and a sum of Rs 200 crore will be spent on its construction. The structure will be spread over nearly 1,10,000 sq ft. The design process took almost a year after an international competition to shortlist architects was launched in December 2013. Naik added, “While making the new wing, a part of the Ranibaug and the open ground next to the baug will be used. This part of the baug has a security cabin which will be removed and a cafeteria will be made, and the ground will be used for car parking. This ground is the only open space in Byculla and that too shall go. Also, isn't the security cell supposed to be right next to
The Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla is subject of new controversy.
The plan:
Dec 2013 – Launch of architectural design competition July 2014 – Eight architectural firms shortlisted December 2014 – A team led by Steven Holl wins the competition to design its north wing November 2015 – Construction of the new museum building is scheduled to start 2018 – Deadline for completion of the new building November 2018 – Deadline for new museum's building inauguration the gate? How can they move it?” “Social gatherings, school annual festivals, sports events are conducted in this ground and the BMC is taking over the happiness of the children who play there on a daily basis. If everything is
given to the trust what will happen of the common man?” questioned Naik. The museum building came up at its current site in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1975, it was named after Bhau Daji Lad. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in PTI

he BKC police has arrested a 38-year-old man who allegedly cheated an employee of a private firm by taking Rs 38 lakh from him for selling a Mercedes car. Police are suspecting that there are two to three more suspects involved in the case who are still at large. After registering an FIR, the BKC police raided several places to nab Sandeep Kandalkar, but eventually found that he had already been arrested by the Bandra police. According to BKC police sources, the man is a habitual cheater and has duped many people. “We have taken custody of Kandalkar for this case.” Kandalkar reportedly runs a car dealership office in Mahim with a few partners. They took the money, shut shop and disappeared, said a police officer. According to the police, the complainant works in a private brokering firm in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). His firm had asked him to chose a high-end car
as the reward for his good performance, and the company would pay the cost. The complainant then contacted a friend who brought him to the car dealer in Mahim, where the suspects suggested that the entire amount be paid to avail a Rs 1 lakh discount, said a police officer. “The brokering firm agreed and gave him check of Rs 38 lakh in the name of the car dealer,” said K Nigade, senior inspector at BKC police station. The suspects deposited the money into their personal account and made several excuses to the brokering firm about delivering the car, said Nigade. One day the victim decided to personally visit the dealers and found that the office was closed. When he inquired with the neighbouring shopkeepers, he learnt that the office had been closed one week back, said another officer. The victim then informed his office and a case of cheating was registered. “We suspect that a few more people are involved in this case,” added Nigade.

il mafia Mohammad Ali's interim protection from arrest was called back by the Sessions Court on Monday. Ali was arrested on Saturday by the Mumbai Crime Branch after he was linked to the 18 men who were arrested on Friday for smuggling 23 tonnes of red sanders. Mohammad Ali was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Saturday for allegedly ordering the smuggling of 23 tonnes of red sanders. Ali was also arrested in October 2010, for allegedly murdering one of his rivals Mohammed Chand Madar (a fuel smuggler) and was granted bail in 2013. Public Prosecutor (PP) Iqbal Solkar told ADC, “Ear-
lier on Saturday the court was misled as it was not informed of Ali's arrest. By hiding facts they managed to get the interim protection. The CBI also moved one more application before the metropolitan magistrate seeking custody of Ali. The order is likely to be passed today. Mohammad Ali was sent to judicial custody till December 19. On Friday, 18 men were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Coast Guard for smuggling 23 tonnes of red sanders worth Rs 9 crore.

Hospital authorities assure employees of doing needful following which strike is withdrawn By A Staff Reporter
O
n Monday afternoon, the employees of the morgue at the BMC-run KEM hospital went on a strike as they had had enough of facing the wrath of disgruntled relatives coming there to claim the bodies of their near and dear ones who are handed over after a delay owing to other concerned departments of
the hospital. The striking employees who are from the MNS union of the hospital said, “The news of the death of a family member or a friend is shocking and disturbing. The state of mind of the ones hearing the news is that of extreme sadness. And in certain cases an autopsy has to be done and the body can not be handed over before complet-
ing the procedure. It is during times like these that we face the wrath of the relatives who are waiting to take away the body. The delays caused by some doctors or officers irk them and they give vent to their frustration by shouting and abusing us. At times we are also man-handled and beaten up. All this for no fault of ours. This has been going since some time now and
when we realised that it is time we raise our voice against this injustice that we called for a protest today. We have to be protected from being abused verbally and physically from people and this is demand.” It was only after the hospital authorities intervened and assured the employees of doing the needful for them, that the strike was withdrawn.

Modi magic in J&K? rime Minister Narendra Modi has P been able to attract huge crowds in Jammu and Kashmir as well. He addresed two rallies there and both of them were attended by thousands of people. The crowds cheered repeatedly as he attracted them. It looked as if Modi’s magic worked in Jammu and Kashmir also. But both Omar Abdullah (NC) and Mehbooba Mufti (PDP) have express the view that Modi’s show was all stage managed. Omar said two trains and many buses brought people to the rallies. They also tried to make out that Narendra Modi did not attract people in Kashmir and it was Sajjad Lone (People’s Party) who had organised the rally. And Modi made the customary promise to the people: Remove the ruling party from power and give him a chance to deliver. Kashmir is waiting to be developed but the people have been denied even the basic necessities of life. People in Kashmir perhaps want a change and they seem to be all set to move away from NC and PDP. If in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP could get 71 seats out of 80 in the Lok Sabha poll, it should also be able to fare well in Kashmir. What is a satisfying happening in the state is that despite Pakistan’s effort to disturb the elections, people are casting their votes in large numbers. The increased number of votes suggest that the NC had lost ground in the state and the people have decided to vote for a change.

HE Indian National Army (INA) was the force which Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had raised when he was living in Singapore after escaping the British rule in India. The force was meant to be an armed band of the people participating in the national struggle and drew people from all communities. Netaji differed from Mahatma Gandhi’s approach of non-violent movement to oust the British. Netaji believed that non-violence could be an ideology but not a creed. The national movement should be free from violence but, if need be, people could resort to arms. Netaji recalled the Mahatma’s immediate stoppage of satyagraha at Chauri Choura in Uttar Pradesh where the mob killed the policemen who had fired on them till they exhausted the last bullet.
the contest did not remain confined to nonviolence and violence but a challenge to his authority. Netaji did not want the national movement to look divided and preferred to withdraw. But his stock did not suffer. The people began to revere him more. However, the Mahatma turned out to be right that violence could not match the strength of the British Empire and that non-violence, backed by the teeming millions, was the most effective weapon. In fact, the Mahatma’s ideology had a moral and critical side to it: you can win through love even most of the tyrants, not by
Message of togetherness
Mysterious circumstances Subhas Chandra Bose died abroad in mysterious circumstances and did not return to subjugated India. His papers probably reveal not only his differences with the Mahatma but also the cult of violence against the nonviolence ideology. The Government of India had an ideal opportunity to release the papers relating to him when a person asked for them under the Right to Information Act (RTI) a few days ago. The people in India are disappointed that the papers, which the BJP promised during the election campaign to make public, has gone back on its words. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who gave the undertaking, has taken a U-turn on the issue and has refused to divulge the information in Parliament. That the Home Minister has not kept his promise is unfortunate but more regrettable is the denial of authentic information on the differences between Netaji and Mahatma Gandhi. Apparently, it was more than the difference in the viewpoints. All that the public knows was that the Mahatma supported with J.B. Kripalani, a leading Congress leader, against Netaji for the office of Congress presidency in the party election. In fact, it was a confrontation between the two ideologies, one non-violent and the other for the use of arms, if needed. With the Mahatma jumping into the arena,
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar the gun, which he can gather in great number, but through your behavior not to hit back even when kicked. Jesus Christ’s philosophy was to offer the other cheek when slapped on one. His cult was propagated by the Mahatma through the evening prayer meetings he used to have daily. I recall that at prayer meetings all the three books — the Gita, the Bible and the Quran — were read. One day a Punjabi refugee from Pakistan said that he would not like to listen to the Quran because it was the book of the Muslims who had driven him and thousands like him from Pakistan. The Mahatma dispersed the meeting with the statement that even a single objector in the gathering could veto the whole thinking because he was seeking a consensus. Many in the gathering asked the person concerned to withdraw his object but he did not. And the meeting was not continued. A few days later, the same man approached
‘Life on the right path’ T
HE main object of life can only be one object, though there may be as many external objects as there are things and beings. There is one object of life for the reason that there is only one life and this in spite of the fact that it appears outwardly to be many lives. It is in this thought that we can unite and it is from this thought that true wisdom is learned. No doubt that main object of life cannot be understood at once, and therefore the best thing for every person is first to pursue his object in life. For in the accomplishment of his personal object he will arrive some day at the accomplishment of that inner object. When man does not understand this he goes on thinking there is something else to accomplish, and he thinks of all that is before him that is not yet accomplished. That is why he remains a failure. The person who is not definite about his object has not yet begun his journey on
the Mahatma and expressed his regret for imposing his remark on the whole gathering. The meeting was reconvened and the person told the people gathered there that he had realized his mistake of trying to impose his point of view on them. The prayer meetings were never disturbed after that. No doubt, Netaji was popular and had a band of people, called the Forward Block, following him through thick and thin. But the mass appeal for the Mahatma had drowned their voice and a very few people cared for them. The matter would come to be reduced to his wish against a few whose base was limited.
the path of life. One should therefore first determine one's object for oneself however small that object is. Once it is determined one has begun life. We find with many people that somehow they never happen to find their life's voca-
MATTER & SPIRIT tion. And what happens then is that in the end they consider their life a failure. All through their life they go from one thing to another, yet as they do not know their life's object they can accomplish so little. When people ask why they do not succeed, the answer is: because they have not yet found their object. As soon as a person has found his life's object he begins to feel at home in this world, where before he had felt himself in a strange world. No sooner has a person found his way than
Today’s India needs a force like the INA because the alternative, the Congress, is collapsing. The INA’s message of togetherness — Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians gathering on the same platform — is important to keep the country’s attention focused on the much-needed development. True, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about it, but when the development is spelled out it seems to be aimed at benefiting the upper half than the lower half. In the six months’ rule of Narendra Modi, there is neither the lessening of the number of poor nor their improvement. This is primarily because of the BJP, which has installed Modi, has no economic programme to uplift the poor. Comparisons are odious, but China has been able to get 20 million people out of poverty in which they had got stuck. True, China’s is a totalitarian system but in democratic India some progress should have been visible. Apart from the speeches of political leaders on ameliorating the condition of the poor, there is little on the ground. Election after election, the nation is sold on the dream of development but it doesn’t fructify because both the main political parties have used power to collect money and have had no other plan for the people. It is good to hark back on the days of national struggle when roti, kapada aur makan was promised. But we also have to think about today and tomorrow. People have little faith in the political parties but do they have any alternative? he will prove to be fortunate, because all the things he wants to accomplish will come by themselves. Even if the whole world were against him, he will get such a power that he can hold on to his object against anything. He will get such a patience that when he is on the way to his object no misfortune will discourage him. There is no doubt that as long as he has not found it he will go from one thing to another, and again to another; and he will think that life is against him. Then he will begin to find fault with individuals, conditions, plans, the climate, with everything. Thus, what is called fortunate or successful is really having the right object. When a person is wearing clothes which were not made for him, he says they are too wide or too short, but when they are his clothes he feels comfortable in them. Everyone should therefore be given freedom to choose his object in life. And if he finds his object one knows that he is on the right path. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Punish Pak without war
WHATEVER said and done, Pakistan is crossing all the ceasefire guidelines and attacks desperately in the line of control. The recent attack saw 20 killed from both sides in the multiple attacks in Kashmir including eight Army personnel. This is a matter of great concern and the Indian government needs to look at it from a serious angle and find an amicable solution to such deadly attacks. Attack is the best form of defence and the Indian military forces should be on the offensive to avoid serious loss to our Army personnel in such encounters. All along we have waited for peace talks but Pakistan is crossing all limits and interested in inflicting loss inside our territory. None of our government has taken any action so far and has been absorbing several terrorist attacks and other nefarrious activities of Pakistan with whimpers. WHILE commenting on the recent spurt in the terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir, the 'secular' press seems to have adopted its now familiar stance. of them going to the polls on December 9, will not be lost on the Indian security establishment. Security forces have suffered more casualties in a single day on Friday than at any other time in the recent years. The high voter turnout, 72 per cent in the latest phase, appears to have riled terrorist handlers across the border no end. The attacks — on an army camp in Uri, a police station at Shopian, a police check post at Soura on the outskirts of Srinagar, and a bus shelter near Pulwama killing two civilians — are a clear warnings to both citizens and armed forces that militants continue to possess the capability to attack and kill at will. The attacks will cast their shadow on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar for an unprecedented BJP election rally. Even the location chosen for the fidayeen onslaught, Uri, near the Line of Control, is a surprise, since it has been relatively peaceful in recent years. For ordinary citizens, caught between so many political actors and the powerful Indian Army, the increasing voter turnout must be read as their desire for normalcy and peace rather than any grand political statement. Perhaps, the changing political scenario of the state, evidenced in the BJP setting itself an ambitious target of emerging as the single largest party, could dramatically alter these equations post-elections. But to view the emergent militancy of recent months solely from the prism of the elections would be to miss the larger strategic shifts happening internally in Pakistan and on its north-western front.Even as sustained efforts for peace continue, increased vigil on the border is the only option for India until the terror camps across the border are dismantled. — Bhagwan Thadani, via email

Delhi and 25 other Indian cities’ air pollution is getting worse by the day. A World Health Organisation (WHO) study ranked Delhi as the world’s worst city for air pollution. Also, a recent Yale University study shows that Delhi’s pollution level is worse than that of Beijing, the global poster-child for pollution. One of the reasons can be attributed to the rapid increase in vehicular traffic. Owning more than one car has become a status symbol for the capital’s elite. Rising number of cars in the city leads to other problems, such as noise pollution, reduced parking space, traffic congestion, accidents and reduced space for cyclists and pedestrians. Air pollution is also linked to respiratory ailments such as asthma and bronchitis. Both the civil society and government must get their act together to control Delhi’s hazardous level of air pollution. — Mahesh Kumar, New Delhi

Action to be taken against risky mines, quarries along Konkan Railway tracks By A Staff Reporter
K
onkan Railway officials have expressed fear over scores of mines and quarries spread on 2000 km along the Konkan Railway track as it poses potential risk for the safety of railway property as well as passengers on board trains, officials said. After the Jan Shatabdi train accident, Konkan Railway officials have decided to survey all the quarries and mines in the proximity of Konkan Railway track in Konkan division and issue stop work notices through the state government, if a mine poses risk to the Railway.
Konkan Railway officials said that continuous digging of mines and stone quarrying in the Konkan division along the railway track is a growing concern for the Railway. After the survey, the surveyors will make classification of mines into two categories – risky for railway and not risky. List of mines and quarries classified under risky category, will be sent to the state government and Railway Safety Commissioner. Risky mines will be immediately served with stop work notice through the state government to avoid accidents in future.
In Sunday's accident in which a JCB fell from the stone quarry site on the Jan Shatabdi express in Sindhudurg district, 16 passengers reportedly sustained injuries and three of them were critically injured. Solitude, or me-time, as pop culture has come to call it, is an important aspect of healthy living that you shouldn’t ignore. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry explain its good and bad sides, get you expert opinions on the subject and tell you about a few fun things that you can do alone
H
umans are social creatures — that’s a fact that cannot be debated. However, this doesn’t imply that being alone is unimportant. Unfortunately, most people have a very narrow understanding of solitude. It is often confused with loneliness, and any argument about the benefits of solitude is dismissed immediately as hokum. Just because the benefits of solitude (like most other factors that promote mental and emotional wellbeing), cannot be quantified in terms of a specific percentage by which it reduces your risk of physical ailments such as heart attacks or cancer, doesn’t mean that you should ignore how good it can be to invest in an hour or two of quality alone time.
Reboot and rejuvenate: Ever wondered why taking a long walk all by yourself or going or a long jog in the park makes you feel refreshed and raring to go — at least mentally? A lot of it is because of endorphins, or feel-good hormones. But, being by yourself also allows your mind to rest. Simply spend 15 minutes away from distractions and you’ll see instant results. Here’s another tip that you can use in the middle of a busy, stressful day — take a break and go for a short walk, or just doodle in your notebook. Increase productivity: This is straightforward logic — without any distractions, you’ll be able to concentrate better. Want to make the most of this in your daily routine? Some people find that working while listening to music (which negates ambient noise around you) helps make their thoughts clearer, enabling them to work faster. Increase creativity: Group brainstorming exercises are great when you have to meet a deadline, but have you considered that you might always end up be thinking the same way as the rest of your group? Several studies have proven that herd mentality — the human tendency to follow popular opinion or actions when you’re in a group — is incredibly popular. So, if you want to come up with something truly original, you’re better off thinking about it on your own.

Become better: At what, you ask? Well, Anders Ericsson, a psychologist who carried out research on expert performance, noted that if you want to become better at a certain task, your best bet is to attempt it on your own. This brings out the demanding aspects of the task and makes it easier for you to address the problem. So, the next time you’re thinking about learning a new skill or taking up a hobby, focus on doing it by yourself first, and then consider pursuing it as a group activity.

Attend A tAlk/ book reAding Attend a book reading session by your favourite author, or a talk by/ live interview of your favourite celebrity. When you attend such events with other people, you get so caught up with the plans and arrangements that it is difficult to be fully present, without your mind being pre-occupied. When you go alone, not only will you have an experience that is solely for yourself, you will also be able to enjoy it without any distractions.
spA session Instead of complaining about the hard week that you’ve had, or venting your anger on family and friends, book yourself a session at your favourite spa. It could be a small, insignificant treatment, but it will help you think things through, relieve you of stress, helping you to unwind and spend some quality time with yourself.
Volunteering If you aren’t confident about doing something all by yourself, try volunteering for a social cause. All of us have causes that we feel strongly about, but instead of being an armchair activist, head to a volunteer centre and get your hands dirty. You will be joined by other people as well, so, this is the perfect activity to begin with, if you’re looking to spend time with yourself.

While taking time off from your schedule and work engagements can be a lovely thing, too much of it could push you to the brink of loneliness. Spending all your time cooped up at home, away from other people, can actually damage your physical health. According to a study that was conducted in 2010, loneliness is as harmful to your health as smoking! Researchers at Brigham Young University examined a series of studies on the subject and found that
We personally love pottering around the house and a lot of people find it de-stressing as well. So, play your favourite music and start organising! Re-organise your wardrobe, clean out drawers and give your home a complete sweep down. You may be tired at the end of it, but happy, with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling that your time has been well spent.

speAking About solitude So, what do people in the city do when they’ve got time to spend with themselves? We spoke to a few to find out what solitary activities they’re most fond of. Here’s what they had to say... A little understAnding
When 27-year-old Charlene Flanagan has time to herself, she really makes the most of it. She tells us, “When I have time to myself, I usually like to take a long, hot shower as it relaxes me. After that, I cook for myself, and enjoy eating my meal while I catch up on the latest episodes of television shows that I like. I think that doing things alone, or just for myself, helps me review my week. It tells me where I might have gone wrong in dealing with people or situations, and on the whole, helps me understand myself better.” The media professional seems to be right on track when it comes to effectively using her time alone!
>> You might not have considered it, but watching a film all by yourself, once in a while, is not a bad idea
A lot of therApy
Sometimes, the chaos and commotion of life can get overwhelming. This is where solitude can be the most beneficial, but Parth Kochhar isn’t really alone — he’s got music to give him company! The 22-yearold student tells us how a little time alone helps him de-stress and focus on the things he loves, explaining, “Music is like therapy to me. So, no matter how hard my day gets, I always make sure that I have some time to listen to good music — even if it is while I’m travelling or working out. I also love aircrafts, so reading up about them and scouring for aeroplane models makes me really happy and takes my mind off everything else.”
reAd All About it
Solitude doesn’t have to mean inactivity, it just means time away from the rest of the world. And
loneliness, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity are all equally dangerous and can even be fatal in the long run. Social interaction plays an important role in maintaining your physical health, especially amongst the elderly. Another study, conducted by the University of California including people aged over 60-years-old, found that those living a solitary life were more likely to suffer from depression, low blood pressure, dementia and a weak immune system.
“W
e are social animals, so our involvement with various aspects of our lives demands thinking, processing and activating our thoughts into appropriate channels of action. To combat this jumbled state of mind, yoga places emphasis on the practice of solitude — that is, the quieting of your mind. The human mind is endowed with intellect, but we are experts when it comes to complicating it and misusing this faculty by constantly wallowing in a chain of incoming and outgoing thoughts, which are usually meaningless and concocted. This depletes our energy, wastes our potential and saps our enthusiasm to function, leaving us fatigued and disoriented. Regularly practising yoga techniques such as Yogendra Nishpanda Bhav, Anitya Bhavana, Pratipaksh Bhavana can help improve your ability to focus and promotes solitude in a healthy way.” — Hansaji Jayadeva, yoga expert and director, The Yoga Institute
“S
while too much of it isn’t good for you, a fair amount of time spent by yourself can help you do several things that you wouldn’t be able to do if you were always surrounded by people. Take 27-year-old Anindra Sequeria for example. He uses his time alone to do things that he loves, for himself. The
media professional explains, “I like to spend my me-time watching TV shows and reading. Other things that I do by myself include tending to my home garden, playing the guitar and recording and editing music on my computer.” He sounds very positive and productive to us!
olitude is essentially like being caught up in a cosy moment with yourself. When you are alone, your mind converses with itself, starting from the memories of the most recent events that you may have experienced. This promotes introspection about your behaviour and the effects of your actions. Such introspection can be very useful when you’re making decisions about critical situations and problems, and can raise your emotional quotient as well.” — Kinjal Pandya, psychologist

THE BREAKFAST RAVE If you find a group of enthusiastic people dancing zealously in the wee hours of morning, interrupting your beauty sleep, don’t mistake them for party-goers carrying forward last night’s debauchery. In all likelihood, you’ve just encountered a breakfast rave, says Shirley Mistry
C
omplete with snazzy outfits and electrifying, thumping music, courtesy of the neighbourhood’s best DJ, breakfast raves haven taken the world by storm. They may come across as slightly disturbing to some, but they are simply a bunch of people giving their day the best possible start that they can! Dancing enthusiastically for an hour or two, to foot-tapping tunes may sound like your idea of a perfect Saturday night out on the town, but it can also be part of your daily routine and help boost fitness.
>> Dance your way to health by attending a breakfast rave
What is it? Breakfast raving or braving, as it is being called in some circles, is essentially a super-healthy dance party in the early hours of the morning (complete with an entry fee and wristbands/ stamps!). While people come dressed up in costumes and wigs, you can wear anything to one of these gatherings — just leave your work-friendly heels at home and pick comfortable shoes, because you’re going to be doing some serious dancing. Starting at around 6am in the morning, people gather at one location, and literally dance their extra calories away. A DJ plays upbeat music that sets the tempo for you to get going and when you think you need a break, head to the refreshments counter. While you won’t be able to grab a beer like you would at a nightclub (for obvious reasons), you can instead indulge in a glass of juice, a few slices of fruit or a smoothie before you get back on the dance floor. Dancing energetically at a breakfast rave, especially when you are being cheered on by a roomful of people, will not only help you burn approximately 450 calories every hour, your body will also experience a surge of endorphins that is sure to put you in a good mood, even if you have a gruelling day ahead of you.
hoW it helps A granola and yoghurt parfait is a good way to start your day, but instead of groggily going through the motions before you head to work, a breakfast rave helps you get exercise out of the way first thing in the morning, and puts you in an excellent frame of mind at the same time. It also instils a sense of community and belonging, helps you dance your cares and worries away and spreads positivity. In fact, some people who have attended breakfast raves claim to come away feeling great about their bodies and feel self conscious after attending one.
throWing your oWn rave While breakfast raves are a community event and are usually organised for an entire area, if you can’t find one and want to organise your own breakfast rave, keep the following points in mind. n no yawning: The idea of a breakfast rave is to be upbeat and energetic, so ensure that you are wide awake before your guests arrive. Yawning while you greet your guests is definitely going to be a dampener. n healthy treats: While your idea of a great breakfast might be bagels and cream cheese, for your breakfast
rave, limit the menu to juices, yoghurt parfaits and smoothies. You can also lay out platters of crackers, but avoid the cheese-laden dips. Also, ensure that you serve fresh, homemade juices and not sugary, canned ones. n pump up the music: Ultimately, the success of a breakfast rave boils down to the music that you are going to play at the event. So, save the love ballads and ballroom dancing for your Christmas party and pick songs that are cheerful, with a high beats per minute count. Remember, you want your guests up and about, not leaning against the wall, stifling a yawn.
A HEALTHY BALANCE
Sofitel has introduced a Balanced Lunch for the health-conscious. Yamini Walia tells you more
W
>> The healthy lunch at Jyran is not only delicious, it won’t leave you feeling bloated
hile I was on my way to Jyran at Sofitel, to try their balanced lunch, all I could think was — ‘How good can healthy, Indian food really taste?’ This is because as children, we were all taught that dal, sabzi or chapatis have to include a generous dose of ghee or oil, in order for them to taste delicious. Of course, this makes them unhealthy and heavy on the stomach. So, since the Balanced Lunch promised to be healthy and light, I was sure that it wasn’t going to satiate my tastebuds. Turns out, my perception was wrong! If you’re a working individual, you probably know what a heavy lunch can do to productivity. This is where the balanced meal comes into play, as it offers a quick, 45-minute lunch that includes an assortment of dishes. You’re eating an appropriate quantity that your body needs in order to stay healthy, and it is light on the stomach, as well as time-efficient. We think that it’s a win-win situation! I love the interiors of Jyran as they give off a very royal vibe. I was served their special flavoured water (orange) as soon as I entered the restaurant. It is refreshing, and is perfect for hot, humid days. For the balanced meal, their presentation style is unique and different — the lunch is served on a wooden block with depressions to place your dal, sabzi, raita, salad, roti, rice and water. They have a set menu for the balanced lunch, so you have limited options to choose from.
As far as healthy eating goes, your best bet is to eat one dal and two sabzis, but make sure that you choose one dry sabzi in order to balance the flavour and texture of the meal. I opted for Bhindi Masala, Sunheri Jhingha, yellow dal and one naan. While the bhindi was rich in flavour and well-cooked, the prawns were slightly oversalted. The dal was scrumptious and the naan was extremely soft. If you’re looking for an ever healthier meal, I would advise you to opt for roti instead of naan. I also ate a small portion of flavourful brown rice. For me, any meal is incomplete without dessert, but dessert is never a healthy option, unless it’s served in small portions. Thankfully, that’s exactly what the balanced lunch offers — a bitesized portion of dessert, which changes every day. I tried the paan ice-cream, which was delectable. By the end of my meal, I felt satisfied and light. The food was healthy and delicious, breaking the age-old myth that healthy food can’t be appetising. The lunch costs `1,099 for a vegetarian meal, and `1,199 for a non-vegetarian option — which isn’t cheap for an everyday option, but not so exorbitant that you can’t indulge in it once in a while. So, go ahead and try out this healthy feast! When Monday to Friday, noon to 3pm Where Jyran, Sofitel Hotel, C 57, Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra (e) Contact 30151568

Cool down sunburns To combat a sunburn, mix a few drops of witch hazel oil with aloe vera gel and apply it on the affected area. The antiinflammatory properties in both these natural ingredients will soothe your skin and cool sunburns. It will also prevent your skin from peeling off.
1 Treat varicose veins The astringent properties of witch hazel oil help to reduce the appearance of varicose veins. The tannins constrict your blood vessels, and in turn, diminish varicose veins to a great extent, if not completely. Simply rub the oil on to the areas you want to treat or soak a cloth in witch hazel extracts and apply it on your skin so that it can soak in all its goodness.
2
Treat rashes Witch hazel has several health benefits and one of them is its antiinflammatory effect, which makes it a perfect remedy to heal rashes and allergic reactions.
Natural cleanser Witch hazel is the perfect hair cleanser and so, it’s a good idea to use a few drops of it when you’re washing your hair in order to remove excess oil build up and lock in moisture at the same time. Instead of using the oil directly, you can also use extracts of the plant as a deep conditioning treatment.

HAZEL oiL
Pore minimiser Witch hazel oil is extremely beneficial when it comes to reducing the size of your pores. This prevents dirt from accumulating under your skin. All you have to do is pat some witch hazel oil on your face and cover it with a hot towel. Leave it on till the towel cools down, and then use the same towel to wipe away any residue.
In an age where there is a variety of ingredients in every product that you use, it’s hard to find items that are all-natural as well as multipurpose. However, witch hazel oil ticks both boxes. Sara Shah brings you a few tips to help you use this plant and go au naturel
5 Bye-bye acne Witch hazel’s anti-inflammatory properties also help reduce swelling and acne. The natural astringent present in it will help reduce the excessive secretion of sebum and oils, which is a common cause of acne. Wash your face and use a cotton swab to dab a few drops of oil on blackheads to keep them away.

Mostly As We’re sorry to have to break it to you, but if you didn’t already know, your mother is the reason for your weight gain. Her cooking is the culprit behind those extra kilos you tend to put on over the holidays. While we know that it’s difficult to explain this to a doting parent, we suggest you make some decisions on your own. If she forces you to eat more than you should, tell her about the heavy evening snack you had at work (even if you didn’t!). Try to exercise more, if you can’t control the amount of food you’re forced to eat. Going for longer walks or jogs will help burn off some of the extra calories. Mostly Bs You’ve got no reason to worry! Your mother serves you food that is healthy and doesn’t force you to overeat. If you’re still gaining weight, your overall diet might be to blame!
Say goodbye to baggy eyes We won’t advise you to apply the oil directly to your under eye area, but you should use creams that contain witch hazel oil. You can also mix a drop of this oil with your regular under eye cream or dip cotton pads in a mixture of witch hazel oil and water, and keep it on for five minutes.

Treat eczema Symptoms of eczema include redness and itchy, dry patches of skin. Witch hazel helps remove the excess oil from your skin without making it dry and so, is a great remedy for eczema. So, regularly apply the oil on the affected areas to get rid of red skin.

Yoghurt may be beneficial when you eat it along with a healthy diet, but if you’re constantly indulging in storebought, flavoured varieties, you’re not doing yourself any favours. Most store-bought varieties are filled with processed ingredients and are high in fructose. While this may be okay in small quantities, low-fat yoghurt is even worse because it uses artificial sweeteners.

Unless you’re making it yourself. If you’re loading up on packaged juices every morning in a bid to make breakfast the healthiest meal of your day, you’re doing things all wrong. Fruit juices that are sold at retail outlets are usually nothing but flavoured sugar water and often don’t even contain any real fruit! And, even if it’s a 100% natural

Eating a granola bar for breakfast is not only unhealthy, it’s also rather useless! Unless you’re making it at home (which is when it can be healthy), you’re only loading up on preservatives that are present in store-bought varieties, along with all the oats and nuts that you think are so healthy. Some varieties even contain sugar and oil. Another thing to be wary of when it comes to these bars is that you could end up eating too many of them.

Sure, we all think that a large breakfast will help us lose weight but the truth is that if you overeat at breakfast, eating tiny meals through the rest of your day won’t matter. You will end up eating fattier, sugary foods, craving a larger quantity as time goes by (unnecessarily increasing your appetite) and overdoing the calorie content. Stick to consuming less than 500 calories at
No, your special breakfast cereal is not as healthy as you think it is. The easy breakfast option actually contains lots of sugar, salt and wheat — all of which make you sluggish and lazy, rather than energetic, at the start of your day. Muesli is a healthier option if you absolutely must have your cereal fix in the morning. However, if you try soaking your own oats and making oatmeal instead, your day will definitely start on a healthier note. Remember that instant oatmeal is equally bad though!
PiCk A leAN MeAT
Breakfast doesn’t have to be vegetarian to be healthy, but it should not include fatty, fried strips of bacon! Indulge in them (if you must) once in a while and pick leaner meats for your daily breakfast. Eat an egg white omelette and don’t find solace for your bacon cravings in sausages either, as they’re also high in calories. Pick lean ham if you must eat a processed meat.

passionate aBout
fitness Walking into what he thought was a boring old gym, Dev Goswami was left impressed by the unadulterated passion for fitness at newly opened ProSport Fitness in Lower Parel. Read on to find out why
aving written about health and fitness for a few years now, I’ve visited my fair share of gyms across the city. And, despite what they would have you believe, most leading gyms aren’t that different — from the kind of equipment and space that they boast of, to non-fitness facilities such as steam rooms and the type of music that they play, it is difficult to tell one gym apart from the other, unless you’re focussing on the colour of the uniforms that the trainers sport. This is also partly why we don’t cover every new gym or fitness facility that opens up in the city. However, a few gyms do catch our eye and ProSport Fitness, a new fitness centre in Lower Parel, was one of them. Located in Raghunvanshi Mills, the gym and the building provide a stark contrast to the highend, luxury stores that this small compound houses. Turn your back to the attractive glass façades, and you will face a slightly old, worn-out building instead that houses ProSport Fitness. Reaching the gym is a workout in itself; you’ll have to climb two flights of stairs to reach the second floor, where ProSport is located — though this is probably because the elevator was out of order when I visited. Walking into the main gym area of ProSport is like walking into a colourful play area. With a grey ceiling, brick walls and brightly coloured equipment, ProSport has a fun vibe to it, which I think is important when it comes to gyms. They focus mainly on using body weight to provide resistance and so, there are several medicine balls, Swiss balls, a few resistance bands and a well-stocked dumbbell rack. The only equipment-heavy workout that you will be doing at ProSport is cardio, for which they have a separate section upstairs, stocked with treadmills, cycles and rowing machines. While the décor and equipment at ProSport are certainly impressive, nothing is too different from the type that a regular gym would boast of. But, I was most
impressed by the staff — Leandi Van Zyl, Hermanus, Anje Le Roux and Stian Le Rouz — and their passion for fitness. Even if I was to discount the fact that they were on their best behaviour because they were aware of the purpose of my visit, I can’t ignore their eagerness and willingness to keep you fit, safe and injury-free. I spoke with Leandi who is one of the two trainers and Stian, who is one of the physiotherapists. Both come across as well-informed about fitness and just a 15-minute chat with them is enough for you to realise that you’re in safe hands. The fact that ProSport has a limit of four people (per session, per trainer), shows you the level of individual attention that you will get here. I was also happy to hear that the personalised training programme, which includes three to four, 45-minute or one hour sessions every week (which they design for you, based on a series of tests that the trainers run on you, as well as your fitness goals) is covered within their membership rates. That said, the membership rates are quite expensive and range from `60,000 to `1.8 lakhs. This is much, much higher than a regular gym and was the one thing that I was disappointed by. If you have the money to spend and live or work in and around Lower Parel, ProSport is worth checking out. where 2nd Floor, Raghuvanshi Mansion, Raghuvanshi Mill Compound, Lower Parel Contact www.prosportfitness.in
« Know more over-exercising to maKe up for an unhealthy diet Shirley Mistry tells you why it is crucial to keep your diet healthy in order to get the most benefits from your workout and why over-exercising will not negate the effects of an unhealthy diet
L
et me dig into that pizza, I’ll work out for an extra 20 minutes tomorrow.’ ‘What was all that ruckus about me getting a whipped cream topping on my hot chocolate — I’ll run on the treadmill for an extra 15 minutes tomorrow.’ If you often find yourself making such statements to accommodate unhealthy food into your diet, you’re in big trouble. You may think that you can eat whatever you want and simply exercise it away the next day, in reality, this theory doesn’t have an iota of logic to it. If you aren’t entirely convinced, take a look at why you can’t outexercise an unhealthy diet.
Not aN athlete
Eating a calorie-dense meal makes sense for marathon runners, because they are going to need the calories to sustain themselves through a 10km race. You, on the other hand, will probably jog around your housing society, so indulging in a grilled cheese sandwich and milkshake doesn’t quite add up. You don’t need to consume so many calories and if you make a habit of it, the calories that you consume will outdo the calories that you burn.
You woN’t hit Your peak
If your idea of a pre-workout snack is a bag of wafers and a handful of chocolates, you
need to step back and take a moment to reassess your situation. While you do need to eat carbohydrates and proteins before and after your workout to give your body energy, binging on junk is the worst way to do it. Not only are you consuming unnecessary calories, your body is going to be pulled down by your poor eating habits, which will not give you the energy that you need to complete an intense workout and increase your level of intensity subsequently, preventing you from reaching your peak.
Coated iN flab
When you don’t burn off calories as fast as you consume them, they deposit themselves in your body in the form of fat. Women generally have trouble with their hips, thighs and bottom, whereas men put on weight around their mid-section. So, even if you have lean thighs or toned abs, regularly consuming unhealthy food, means that they will always be hidden under layers of fat.
No eNergY
At the other end of the unhealthy spectrum, is eating so little that you can’t muster up the energy to finish your daily workout. Remember that your body needs nutrients to function, as well as to exercise. So, if
your diet is extremely low in carbohydrates or calories, you are doing as much harm to your body as you would if you ate a massive bar of chocolate for lunch. So, an insufficient diet, when paired with a strict workout regime, makes your body turn to muscle mass for energy. As a result, your body isn’t energetic enough to build mass and produce energy, because your insulin and testosterone levels (which are essential in order for your body to build lean body mass) are extremely low.
No motivatioN
If you regularly veg out in front of the television, with buttery popcorn, soda and a bag of assorted chocolates for company, you’re bound to feel bloated, sluggish and drowsy. This will not only prevent you from finishing a workout, but if you do this regularly, you may lose the will to go to the gym entirely. Eating healthy gives you motivation to exercise, which in turn motivates you to eat better. When you bring carts of unhealthy food into the picture, this cycle is broken and your workout routine goes for a toss.

About
Abortion There has always been a veil of suspicion, apprehension and even confusion surrounding abortion, which is why most people draw a curtain over the subject. However, knowledge is always a good thing, so Shirley Mistry scoured for some of the most prevalent myths and asked Dr. Duru Shah, owner & scientific director at GynaecWorld, to clear the air
W
hen you think of the word abortion, there are several things that immediately come to mind. With some people vehemently dissuading the practise, others propagating to have it banned and some even labelling it lifethreatening for a woman to undergo it, there are so many negative connotations attached to it that the internet isn’t the best place to turn to for information about the subject, as most articles offer conflicting and inaccurate information, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. So, we asked Dr. Duru Shah (inset) to bust some common myths about abortion.
Myth #1 Abortions Are pAinful for the foetus First of all, a foetus isn’t a baby. A foetus is a primal form of a mammal, which turns into a baby over time. Also, a foetus can’t exist without the mother and so, it is an extension of the mother, whereas a baby is a separate entity. So, getting an abortion isn’t the same as killing a baby. While ‘killing a baby’ is a term that is used very loosely, it has harsh implications. We spoke to Dr. Duru about the notion of the foetus experiencing pain during the process, and she firmly told us, “No, an abortion doesn’t cause any pain to the foetus.” In fact, researchers and medical practitioners are of the opinion that a foetus can’t feel pain until the third trimester — which is much after an abortion can be performed.
Myth #3 getting An Abortion poses A life-threAtening risk to A woMAn This is another example of jumping to conclusions, because a few complicated abortions can’t be used to label the procedure lifethreatening. “The risk of serious complications is rare, with about 12 of every 1,000 cases undergoing complications. The risk is proportional to the duration of the pregnancy. The most common problems faced are pain and bleeding. Serious complications such as uterine perforation occur in about 1 in every 1,000 abortions. Severe bleeding that requires blood transfusion is quite rare, especially for early abortions. The risks remain low if the abortion is carried out by experienced health professionals in well-equipped, hygienic clinics,” Dr. Duru tells us.

Myth #2 woMen who undergo Abortions experience severe clinicAl grief There is a lot that has been said about women who pick abortions feeling unstable, grief-stricken and full of regret afterwards, which is why it is often considered to be an impractical option. A study conducted by UC San Francisco found that from 843 women who participated in the study, 95% women felt that they had made the right choice. This is why emotions of grief and regret can’t be assumed as a universal reaction. That being said, it is normal for some women to feel otherwise, at least temporarily. “Some women who undergo abortions do experience clinical grief, which is what we call post-traumatic stress disorder or anxiety (PTSD),” says Dr. Duru. She also tells us that such reactions are often found amongst women who are forced to keep their abortion a secret from their partners or family. Some women could also suffer from low self-esteem, which leads to unhealthy habits such as increased smoking, alcohol consumption or food intake, which can eventually cause other health problems.

itamin D Express is part of Developing a Healthier India campaign and aims to spread awareness about vitamin D deficiency, the health implications of the complication and helps provide people expert advice on the issue. The road trip was flagged off from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and will continue for an entire year, right up to December 25, 2015. Dr. Aseem Parekh, head of department, orthopaedics at Nair Hospital, tells us, “In a country like India where people are largely oblivious to the role of vitamin D in maintaining good health, such initiatives will not only help increase awareness among people, but they will also help improve their general well-being.” To make the journey more interesting, the Vitamin D Express will have six drama artists performing 116 plays in 15 cities. The plays are artfully written to bring out the health and wellness aspects linked with vitamin D deficiency, in a local language that people will understand. An healthcare specialist will be on board as well, helping to educate people about the inadequacy of vitamin D in most Indian diets and explain the importance of supplements that provide 100% of our daily required vitamin D for healthy functioning of our body.
Myth #4 Abortions leAd to breAst cAncer And/ or infertility Dr. Duru believes that there is no research to back this claim. “There’s no evidence to link induced abortions with breast cancer. However, if abortions are not performed in an aseptic way, they may lead to infections, which can damage and block tubes. Blocked tubes can be a reason for infertility later on in life. However, this can be averted if abortions are performed in a clean, aseptic environment by an experienced professional. Using antibiotics, further decreases the risk of contracting an infection,” she adds.
Myth #5 Abortion is An AlternAtive to birth control This myth makes no sense and is an incredibly ignorant, often dangerous one to believe, because it equates the ease of purchasing contraception over-the-counter, to undergoing an abortion. Dr. Duru explains, “Abortion is not, and must not be perceived as an alternative to birth control. Birth control methods are user-friendly, tend to be more effective and can be used over and over again, without posing serious problems. On the other hand, multiple abortions may pose risks to a woman’s physical as well as psychological health.”
Dr. Aseem says, “Considering the rampant vitamin D deficiency in our country and its impact on health and fitness, it is very important to make people aware about it. It is important for people to understand that the deficiency doesn’t have any early signs and symptoms that can act as a marker to judge the extent of the problem. The body continues to function in a seemingly normal way, but prolonged deficiency could lead to serious health complications later on.” According to various scientific studies, vitamin D not only helps to ensure good bone health, it also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, mental illnesses, cancer, multiple sclerosis and infections. However, there is very little awareness around the importance of vitamin D in India. So, considering this situation, a road trip of this nature is a great idea.

dear Barbara, I have to attend a cocktail party in a few days and want to wear a pair of strappy sandals. But, I have injured my foot, which has bruised some of my nails. I know that there is nothing that can be done and I have to wait for my nails to grow out, but can you suggest a quick fix that will save my feet at the party? Please help. — sujata sharma, goregaon dear sujata, You’re right! You’ll have to wait for your nails to grow out. Bruising is usually caused by bleeding under the nails. So, the ideal situation would be for you to choose another pair of shoes. Ok we get it, those shoes are the only pair that match your dress. In that case, we suggest you camouflage the bruises with a dark shade of nail polish such as a deep red. But, we recommend that you change your mind about the shoes to avoid contracting an infection. dear Barbara, I’m glad that the weather has become cooler, but the seasonal change has left me with dandruff. The problem has increased over time, so much so, that I have started washing my hair every day. By evening, I notice that the dandruff is back and my head feels extremely itchy. I feel concious and don’t know what to do. I have also developed a lot of pimples, especially on the sides of my face. Can dandruff be the cause? — shrijonee sen, Mahim dear shrijonee, Don’t worry, almost everyone experiences dandruff during the winter. It is also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis — a skin condition that causes flaking and redness above your eyebrows, on your chest, underarms, the corners of your mouth and your scalp. Although dandruff is an inflammatory condition, a yeast infection can also play a major role. Look for medicated shampoos that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as zinc, or products with anti-yeast ingredients. For a natural solution, apply coconut oil on your hair, at least once a week. Also, the pimples on the sides of your face are definitely because of the dandruff. If the condition worsens, consult a dermatologist. >> Dandruff cause you to breakout into pimples and will leave you with an itchy scalp
WARY EYES
Eye makeup is the most common type of makeup products. But, what if something as innocent as your daily slick of mascara was ruining your vision? Sara Shah tells you why you should be wary
A
flick of eyeliner here and a touch of eye shadow there — we all love our daily dose of eye makeup. There is definitely something appealing about thicker eyelashes that come from a coat of mascara or the uplifting look that an upward flick of an eyeliner can give you. One cannot deny the appeal of sparkly kohl and how it brings out the colour of your eyes. However, what most people don’t know, is that if your eyes are constantly watering or are suddenly red, it could be because of your beloved eye makeup. Read on to find out more.
Makeup accidents Applying makeup takes a certain amount of skill. Also, applying eye makeup requires a lot more precision than most products — but it’s not just so that you don’t draw on a thicker line than you intended. One wrong move and a mascara wand can leave you in agonising pain. If the pain lasts longer than 10-15 minutes, you should get it checked by a doctor. Such accidents run the risk of leading to abrasions in your cornea and can also cause serious eye problems. Always ensure that you are applying eye makeup with a steady hand.
Bacterial infections Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is one of the most common problems that affect the eyes, especially during summer. Dr. Ashini Maniar, opthalmologist at Ojas Laser Eye Surgery Centre says, “While we usually attribute conjunctivitis to summer, it can also be the result of poor eye makeup habits.
“Your lower waterline is essentially a mucus membrane, which keeps your eyes moist. Applying kohl on the waterline blocks your tear ducts and can result in dry eyes. Always apply it on your lower lash line instead. Also, those who wear contact lenses should clean their lenses properly, to rid them of makeup residue, before storing them.”
other precautionary Measures >> Avoid sharing your eye makeup Factors such as using spoiled/ expired makeup and improper storage can also lead to bacterial infections.”
allergic reactions While most eye makeup products are made with eye sensitivity in mind, Dr. Ashini suggests that you browse through the list of ingredients before using them. “Most cosmetic brands produce makeup that is safe to use on your eyes. But, your eyes could develop a reaction to these products because of varying levels of sensitivity towards certain ingredients such as lead, which is often used to manufacture eye makeup.” she explains. She suggests using makeup that is nontoxic and contains natural ingredients.
topical application Dr. Ashini suggests you use kohl only on your outer lash line and not on your waterline. Applying kohl on your lower waterline is common practice, especially amongst Indian women. But, she warns,
“The number one rule is to remember not to share your eye makeup with anyone, whether it’s family members or friends,” says Dr. Ashini. This could lead to the spread of bacteria and increase the risk of contracting infections. When you’re in a situation where you feel obliged to share your eye makeup, ensure that you sharpen the pencil after every use, to get rid of any accumulated bacteria.
unavoidaBle precautions You might have spent the night partying away, but going to bed with eyes that are laden with makeup is an absolute no-no. We’re sure that you are exhausted, but even the tiniest amount of mascara or eyeliner can seep into your eyes as you sleep and can lead to puffy, irritated and bloodshot eyes in the morning. Use a good quality makeup remover to take off all your makeup, or use natural ingredients such as olive oil or coconut oil to breakdown waterproof makeup. Also, avoid using mascara and eyeliner that is way past its expiry date. Remember that most eye makeup products don’t last longer than eight months.

EW DELHI: A 'character certificate' purportedly issued in the name of an Additional DCP of the Delhi Police in August this year to the driver accused in the Uber rape case has given a new twist to the case on Monday even as Delhi Police Commissioner termed it as fake and ordered an inquiry into it. The alleged certificate, which was doing the rounds on internet and widely quoted on TV reports gave a clean chit to the accused Shiv Kumar Yadav, who was also accused in a similar rape case in 2011 and had even spent seven months in Tihar jail. He was later acquitted in the case, reports PTI. The certificate was issued with the signature of an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) in August this year, saying Yadav was not involved in any criminal case as per the records of Ambedkar Nagar Police Station.
Police suspect that the certificate was forged by Yadav or he may have procured it from somewhere and submitted to Uber to get him and his cab attached to the company. Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi told reporters that on the date and place mentioned in the certificate, the officer was not posted there. "I would like to inform you that we have got information that the date on which the said certificate was issued, the officer, whose signature are on the certificate, was not posted there. EW DELHI: Jammu & Kashmir's top Army commander has said the parameters for determining success in counter-insurgency operations have not kept pace with the changing environment, leading to "confusion" in the minds of the personnel. In his demi-official letter written to all formation commanders in the state, Northern Army commander Lt Gen D S Hooda stressed that his men follow a "nuanced approach" which "balances local aspirations" while fighting the proxy war in the state. "... Conduct or prosecution of ops (operations) needs to change in sync with the environment prevailing.
"Unfortunately, our metrics for determining success in CI ops (counter-insurgency operations) have not kept pace with the changing environment, and this too has contributed to some confusion in our minds"," he said in his letter which was written a few days after last month's killing of two civilians by the Army in central Kashmir. In the letter, Lt Gen Hooda said "today, all of us in Northern Command are confronted with unique challenges, and the manner in which we face them will determine not only how the nation views its Army but more importantly, how we view ourselves".

Shweta Basu slams media N
EW DELHI: Former child star Shweta Basu Prasad has accused the media of wrongly dragging her name into a prostitution case. The starlet was sent to a rescue home for 59 days after a prostitution racket allegedly involving her was busted. On December 5, the Metropolitan Sessions Court, Nampally, Hyderabad, gave Shweta a clean chit in the case by withdrawing charges and stay order against her that was made by a trial court, reports PTI. In an open letter posted on her
Twitter account, the 23-year-old 'Makdee' star said she was sad with the way things played out in the press. "I understand that everything was a chain of reaction and versions of the incident with several misleading stories were picked up along with my... Wait, not my statement... For the rest of India or anyone, anywhere on planet, for the last time: This is not my statement," she said. Shweta said she wanted to move ahead in life and forget the whole episode.
"Russia had agreed to help India build 14-16 nuclear units. Now it seems that the demand of India is much bigger and this may rise to 2024 units," he said. Asked about escalation of cost in setting up of nuclear power plants, he chose not to link it to clauses in India's nuclear liability laws and only said prices have gone up everywhere. "Cooperation between the two countries in peaceful uses of nuclear energy will prominently figure at the Summit level talks. More than that a very serious and important document is on the anvil which relates to our common vision of joint work in our efforts to satisfy India's requirement in energy through building a series of nuclear plants," the envoy said. He said Russia was also expecting from the Indian side the name of the new site for another "cascade of nuclear power units".

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive but long black body candle. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). This is negative. Further, the index has dropped below its 15 and 25 day’s moving averages. The index is now below its 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages. It has also dropped below a major support level at the 8451 points level. The velocity parameters continue to remain negatively trended. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

R
eflecting improved prospects, India is the only major economy seeing a "clear pick up in growth momentum" while mixed trends are predicted for developed countries, according to Paris-based think tank OECD. The Organisation for Economic
Cooperation an Development said growth would continue to lose momentum in Europe. For other major economies, the outlook is for stable growth momentum, reports PTI. The readings, for the month of October, are based on Composite Leading Indicator (CLI) that are designed to anticipate turning points in economic activity relative to trend. "India is the only major economy where the CLI points to a clear pickup in growth momentum," OECD said in a statement yesterday. The country's CLI rose to 99.6 in October from 99.4 in the previous month. Last month, OECD said that Indian economy is expected to see an average growth of 6.7 per cent over the 2015-19 period while a further boost would depend on reform plans of the government. In Octo-
ber, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank projected 5.6 per cent growth rate for India this year, citing renewed confidence in the market due to a series of economic reforms pursued by the new government. India's economic growth was below 5 per cent in the last two financial years. Recently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) forecast the economy to grow at 5.5 per cent in 2014-15 and at 6.3 per cent in next financial year 2015-16. As per the OECD statement, amongst other major economies, the CLIs continue to point to stable growth momentum in the United States, Canada, China and Brazil. Tentative signs of a positive change in momentum are emerging in Japan. The CLI for Russia points to growth tentatively losing momentum, it added.

MF Assets Fall Marginally In November A fall in liquid fund assets offset the overall gain of the industry made by inflows and market to market (MTM) gains in other categories By A Business Reporter
T
he Indian mutual fund industry’s assets under management (AUM) fell marginally in November 2014 to Rs 10.90 trillion, down 0.49% or by Rs 53.44 bn, from Rs 10.96 trillion in October 2014 according to the monthly numbers released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). “The decline in assets was primarily due to net outflows from liquid funds; gains in most other categories helped cap the loss believes Crisil Research.. According to it the decline in liquid funds’ assets dragged industry AUM down. Liquid funds’ AUM fell 18.17%, or by Rs 506.58 bn, to Rs 2.28 trillion due to net outflows of Rs 524.60 bn during the month. The fall in liquid fund assets offset the overall gain of the industry made by inflows and market to market (MTM) gains in other categories. However, income funds see net inflows for the second consecutive month. Income funds, which had been facing redemption pressure following the tax changes announced in the Union Budget, saw strong inflows for the second consecutive month. The category logged net inflows of Rs 198.44 bn – highest since May 2013 – on falling yield (rise in prices) amidst growing expectations of an interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The category’s assets rose 5.17% or by Rs 246.27 bn to Rs 5 trillion. Gilt funds too benefited from falling yields. The category at-
tracted net inflows of Rs 8.14 bn; the highest net inflows in the past 15 months. The yield of the 10-year benchmark 8.40% 2024 bond fell to 8.09% on November 28, 2014 from 8.28% on October 31. Inflows clubbed with MTM gains resulted in 15.28% or Rs 9.41 bn rise in its assets to Rs 70.99 bn. Equity funds continued to attract net inflows (Rs 49.63 bn) for the seventh consecutive month in November on the backdrop of positive sentiment for the asset class. The positive sentiment also led to increase in new fund offers (NFOs), which too contributed to inflows. The latest month saw the launch of four equity NFOs (one open-ended and three closeended) garnering a total of Rs 10.14 bn, lower than 10 NFOs (four open-ended and six close-ended) collecting Rs 21.97 bn in October. Inflows and MTM gains led the category up 5.90% or by Rs 175.24 bn to Rs 3.15 trillion in November, the highest asset tally for the category on record. The underlying asset class, represented by the benchmark CNX Nifty Index, gained 3.20% in the month on positive domestic and international cues. Balanced funds, which invest a major portion of their AUM in equity, also benefited from the ongoing uptrend in the equity market as the category fetched inflows for the sixth straight month. Net inflows of Rs 8.79 bn coupled with MTM gains boosted the category’s assets by Rs 16.89 bn to Rs 227.69 bn. The category’s standard benchmark, represented by CRISIL Balanced Fund Index, rose 2.63% in the month. Then again Gold ETFs’ AUM ended positive amidst net outflows. Despite gold ETFs continuing to witness redemption for the 18th straight month, the category’s AUM ended up 0.41% to Rs 70.60 bn due to MTM gains. The price of gold (represented by the CRISIL Gold Index) rose 1.21% in November.

inancial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL) yesterday said it has sold an additional 1.65 lakh shares to ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala in the MCX-SX, thereby completely exiting the bourse. Last month, the crisis-hit FTIL signed agreements to sell its entire 5% stake, comprising of 2.7 crore equity shares and 56,24,60,000 warrants, for Rs 88.41 crore. While equity shares were sold only to Jhunjhunwala, the warrants were divested to him and some other investors. In a filing to the BSE, FTIL said: "The company has entered into an amendment to the share purchase and warrant agreement with Rakesh Jhunjhunwala for the sale of additional 1,65,000 equity shares for a consideration of Rs 2,47,500". Post completion of this transaction, the Jignesh Shah-led
FTIL would completely exit MCXSX, it added. For sale of its entire stake in MCXSX, FTIL on November 25 had entered into a share and warrant purchase agreement with Jhunjhunwala. Vibrant celebration of Sur Mansur I
By Amarendra Dhaneshwar
yer Foundation holds the festival Sur Mansur every year as a tribute to the music legend Mallikarjun Mansur, one of the doyens of the Jaipur Attrauli Gharana. This year the festival was dedicated to the memory of Dhondutai Kulkarni, Mansur’s fellow student, who passed away in June. Sonal Shivkumar, a comely young singer, flagged off the festival with her rendition of the raga Nand. Sonal is a pupil of Prabhakar Karekar and later she switched to Manik Bhide of the Jaipur Gharana. She sings in a slightly husky voice with admirable flexibility and can traverse three octaves. Raghunandan Panashikar, perhaps the best male singer produced by the gharana after Mansur, sang the raga Shuddha Nat. Young Yashaswi Sarpotdar sang the raga Lalita Gauri which is a
typical gharana raga. Nishad Bakre sang Bageshri and Khokar. Manjiri Asnare sang the raga Paraj in a typical Mansur style. As also Vijaya Gatlewar who is one of the finest singers and now a faculty member at the Gangubai Hangal Academy based in Dharwad also dazzled the audience with her superspeed taans. Begum Akhtar's birth centenary is being observed all over the country this year. The Begum was the uncrowned Queen of the ghazal and thumri. 'Kahkasha', the programme celebrating her life, featured young singer Sraboni Chaudhary. Chaudhary is pupil of famous singers like the late Dinkar Kaikini and Shobha Gurtu. She has shared the stage with eminent singers like Bhupinder Singh and Pankaj Udhas. It was interesting to listen to her rendering the Begum's numbers.
Justice for all women A
By Sandeep Hattangadi
trocities and crimes against women have been a common feature in the media today with no solution to these heinous crimes in sight. Sachin Dev handles this delicate issue with rare sensitivity. He takes his material from the real life cases like the Shakti Mills rape case and the Jalgaon sex scandal. Anurata Joglekar (Tejaswini Pandit) gets embroiled in the Jalgaon sex scandal. After her parents commit suicide she shifts to Mumbai as a Professor in Marathi Literature. She helps the victim of the Kamala Mills rape case, Sakhi, a young college going girl (Sayali Sahastrabudhe) whose parents refuse to file a complaint. For the case of sexual harassment at work, there's Vidya (Manva Naik) who works for a news channel and is denied promotion and increments because she refuses to sleep with her boss (Amol Bawdekar). But she is strong and fights her case against him with the management and with the help of her husband (Ashish Kulkarni) and wins the case. But the most sad story is of an impoverished mother of two, Shabana (Smita Tambe), who lives in a hut with her drunkard husband (Nilesh Divekar), a good-for-nothing, who is one of the accused in the Shakti Mills murder case. What is the stand of these four women? Do they get justice? The film is well written and watchable for the superb performances of Smita Tambe, Tejaswini Pandit, Manva Naik and Sayali Sahastrabudhe. PramodPawar, Vandana Waknis, Ashish Kulkarni, Ashish Pathode, Nilesh Diwekar, lend good support. Technically it is a polished product. See this film for its burning issue!

Tragic build-up but teams ready for... By Chetan Narula
A
DELAIDE: The usually aggressive build-up has turned poignant owing to Phillip Hughes' tragic death but the on-field faceoff is unlikely to be anything less than high-voltage when India and Australia compete in the opening cricket Test of a four-match series, starting here tomorrow. More than two weeks after landing here, India will finally get down to serious competition with Virat Kohli leading the side in place of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is still recovering from a hairline fracture in his right thumb. Indians are also dealing with uncertainty surrounding medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar even as Australian skipper Michael Clarke was declared fit for the game. The visitors will be hoping to reverse their last Test series' result in this country, when under Dhoni they had lost 4-0 in 2011-12. However, that thought will not be at the forefront when the match begins today. Instead, it will be a emotion-laden atmosphere that will welcome both teams, and for good reason. Adelaide is the adopted home of Hughes and there will be an intense outpouring of emotion before play gets underway. Cricket Australia and South Australia Cricket Association have quite a few plans about honouring the cricketer, who was hit by a bouncer on November 24 in a Sheffield Shield game in Sydney and died two days later. For Australian cricket, and

their whole community sporting or otherwise, it has been a very tough two weeks. It is remarkable how they have mourned Hughes and celebrated every aspect of his short life, during which he played 26 Tests. They have put cricket on the back-foot and cared for their grieving cricketers in this tragic circumstance. They were appreciative of the support they received from the BCCI and somehow managed to save the series and it
29 Abbott set for return after tragedy
SYDNEY: Sean Abbott, who delivered the ball that killed Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, is set to return to action after being named today in the New South Wales squad. There were fears that the young fast bowler may have been too traumatised to play again after Hughes died from being hit by one of his bouncers at the Sydney Cricket Ground last month. But he was included in a 12-man squad to play Queensland in a Sheffield Shield fixture in Sydney from Tuesday. Abbott attended Hughes's funeral last week and many people around the cricket world have expressed solidarity with the 22-year-old following the freak accident.
been an arduous process for them, getting into bat for the first time after Hughes fell, and bowl bouncers even. After three days of teambonding exercises and practice sessions, they are getting back to normal though. All of them have assured, come the Test, they will all give everything on the pitch and will be full of aggression. The intent is going to be aggressive: Kohli A
DELAIDE: Excited to lead India for the first time in a Test, stand-in skipper Virat Kohli today described it as a "big moment" of his career and said his team is determined to play aggressive cricket against Australia when the opening match gets underway here tomorrow. Kohli was handed the captaincy after Dhoni failed to regain complete fitness from a thumb injury.
"It is a big moment for me personally. I had always dreamt of playing Test cricket and now I am getting to lead India in a Test match. It wasn't expected but a series of events led to it," Kohli told reporters. "The good thing is that I captained in the last series back home. So I had that understanding and comfort factor with the guys. And they respect what I want on the field which is most important thing and they have helped me feel relaxed about it. You might see things quite different from what you usually see," said the stand-in skipper when asked about possible difference. "I am someone who goes with what he feels so it might look funny but as long as it works, that's fine. The intent is going to be aggressive. That's something I use in my cricket and will try and use it in my captaincy as well. "I don't mind a bit of chat or banter on the field. It probably makes me more determined but it is not the only thing that makes me determined. I am focused to do well all the time. "Last time I played in Australia I enjoyed it. It was too much for me initially and I had to take it for the first couple Tests. But after a few incidents I figured out that there is no other way of playing
CA names Hughes 13th man of Aus squad
ADELAIDE: In a touching tribute to the late Phillip Hughes, Cricket Australia today named him the 13th man of the national squad for the opening Test against India and promised a range of tributes to honour his memory in what is likely to be an emotional match starting here today. Not going to change aggressive bowling: Mitchell Johnson By Chetan Narula
A
DELAIDE: The tragic death of Phillip Hughes has cast a pall of gloom but Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson today said he will not tone down the aggression in his bowling when the home team faces India in the first cricket Test starting here tomorrow. The series had been delayed owing to Hughes' death two weeks ago. "We've got to play the way that we've been playing and that's been aggressive. That's the way I've always played the game and I know how the boys will be, going out there and playing the best cricket they can. If that's bowling the short ball like we have been, then that's how we'll do it," said Johnson ahead of the first Test. "We'll assess the conditions obviously, but we're not going to change a thing. As a bowling unit, the last probably 18 months for me personally I've been bowling very aggressive and I'm not going to change that," he added. When asked pertinently, what his reaction would be if he hit a batsman on the head, Johnson replied, "I'm not sure. It might be a different reaction this time. I haven't hit anyone yet so I don't know how I'm going to feel." Cricket Australia and South Australia Cricket Association have planned rich tributes to their late cricketer. Hughes has been declared as the 13th man for the Australian team with all the playing members wearing his cap number 408 on their Test jerseys in this first match of the series. "It's really special," said Johnson about the tribute. "His family, I think, that would make them very proud. I'm very proud to be able to wear that number
through this Test. We've named him as the 13th man as well. It's all very special." It has been a stressful time for the Australian players to return to cricket. Their rehabilitation began on Friday with a team-building exercise and since then they have had training sessions leading to this first Test. However, things will still be emotional at the Adelaide Oval, Hughes' adopted home ground. "It's going to be an emotional morning and probably looking at it from our first little part of the game, for me going out there and bowling the first spell might be the most difficult. Then we might just get into the game a bit more but I think mentally, we've had a few training sessions and the vibe's good," said Johnson.
AUSTRALIA SHOULD BE AGGRESSIVE, SHOULD USE BOUNCERS: PONTING Phillip Hughes' unfortunate death notwithstanding, Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels the team's pacers should not shy away from using the bouncer in the Test series against India starting today, insisting that the delivery is part of cricket's fabric. Ponting said he would "love to see Mitchell Johnson run in and bowl a bouncer first ball of the Test match". Hughes passed away last month after being hit on the head by a bouncer during a domestic match. "I don't want to see anyone get hurt. But the bouncer's part of the fabric of the game, and if they're not playing in the aggressive way they did last summer then they're not actually playing in what I believe is the spirit of Test match cricket," Ponting wrote in 'ESPNCricinfo'.
UMBAI: St. Augustine’s High School, Nerul emerged triumphant in the inaugural ‘Champions League’ interschools girls’ under-16 football tournament, organised by SCOREGOALS India and played at the MSSA Schools Sports Centre, Azad Maidan. The Nerul schoolgirl’s scored once in each half through Jyoti Mehra just before the end of the first session and later their most influential and enterprising striker Reetika Sahani to record a 2-0 win against J.B. Petit High School, (Fort) to be crowned as the ‘Champion School of Mumbai 2014’. The finals was a keenly fought and lively encounter as both the teams worked hard to make inroad into the rival territory to create goalscoring chances. However, after both the sides missed some close chances, St. Augustine scored a few minutes before the end of the first half through Jyoti Mehra to take a 1-0 lead. J.B. Petit girl’s were unfazed by that setback and rose to the challenge as they fought very hard to find the equaliser but did not find the breakthrough. On resumption, St. Augustine hold a slight advantage started on a fast pace and struck the second goal through Reetika Sahani, who was later declared as ‘Champion Player’, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. J. B. Petit fought very gamely but could not score and had to settle for the number two position. Earlier in the day, St. Anne’s, took the 3rd spot as Cathedral of John & Connon

IPTL RULES CAN BE IMPROVED
M FOR NEXT SEASON: CILIC N Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2014
EW DELHI: He is enjoying the International Premier Tennis League experience so far but reigning US Open champion and world number nine Marin Cilic today said that the star-studded event can improve some of its rules for the next edition. The IPTL, a franchisebased league covering six cities all over the world, has drawn criticism from none other than Roger Federer, who signed up to play for two days in the event for Indian Aces. The multiple Grand Slam winner labelled it an exhibition tournament and criticised the rules saying some of them were not necessary at all. IPTL uses a time-restricted format. It has no ad-scoring, all matches are played on best of five format and each set played to six games with a five-minute shoot-out at 5-5. The most talked innovation is the 'Shot Clock', requiring a player to play a service point within 20 seconds of each other. Federer was not particularly pleased by the time rules. Cilic, without elaborating too much, felt the rules can be tweaked next season. "Basically, this tournament is about breaking the regular rules. My point of view is that it can be better next year. Maybe we can have more
We’re determined to put up our best show: Raghunath
BHUBANESWAR: Bruised and battered by the back-toback defeats in the Hero Champions Trophy hockey, India's experienced dragflicker V R Raghunath said the hosts are keen to put up their "best show" in their last Pool B tie against World Cup silver medallist the Netherlands today. After the narrow 0-1 loss against Olympic champions Germany in their tournament opener, India slumped to a 2-4 defeat against Argentina at the Kalinga Stadium yesterday. India squandered their hard-earned lead on two occasions within seconds against Argentina, to slid to the bottom of their pool. "The mistakes which we did yesterday we tried to rectify it today. And we have planned to put up a very good show, our best show which we can put up tomorrow. We are also prepared mentally for the main target that is the quarterfinal.”

"It is not easy for me but I am surviving," he said, breaking into a laughter. Ivanisevic also spoke about his famous rivalry with American legend Pete Sampras, against whom he would be seen in action at the IPTL. Ivanisevic has a 712 career head-to-head record against Sampras. "That guy took a lot of years of my life. I would be happy if he lost to me," he said. The quick-witted Croat also travelled down memory lane to recall his India trips for Davis Cup commitments in the late '80s and early '90s. He said India has a decent crop of tennis players. "History of your tennis is good. There was Vijay (Amritraj), Leander (Paes), Mahesh (Bhupathi). Now you have Tennis Champions Daniela Hantuchová, Ana Ivanovic, Sania Mirza and Sania Mirza. J&K could take just 18-run first innings lead. But before close of play, J&K hit back again to reduce the 40-time champions to a miserable 66 for four in the second innings, ahead by only 48 runs with two days left. Medium pacers Ram Dayal, who picked up three wickets in the first innings with his disciplined bowling, bagged two more in the second, while fellow-seam bowler Umar Nazir claimed the other two Mumbai wickets. At stumps after an absorbing day's play, Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav (17) and night watchman Dhawal Kulkarni (1) were at the crease with seasoned Wasim Jaffer, who suffered a hairline fracture while fielding, left to bat. In the morning Khajuria, who began the day on 47 with teammate Bandeep Singh (34) in an overnight team score of 88 for one in reply to Mumbai's paltry 236, saw his partner depart in the fourth over. But Khajuria continued his good work to reach his century with a six over long on off Vishal Dabholkar. He

ADRID: A third Lionel Messi hat-trick in four games helped Barcelona keep the pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid as they recorded a 5-1 victory over local rivals Espanyol. After falling behind to Sergio Garcia's early strike, Barcelona then took control of the Catalan derby yesterday. Messi's 21st Liga treble, which took him to within two of Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 23 set on Saturday, a Gerard Pique header and neat
finish from Pedro, was enough to see Barca take the spoils and leapfrog Atletico Madrid in second place with 34 points. Real still lead the table with 36 points after a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday. "There's no words to describe Messi. He's given us so much that I genuinely think it's not possible to say everything that he's done for us," said Pique. "It was a difficult game. We were much improved in the second half. We fixed our
mistakes and what we now have to do is continue like this." Despite having not won at the Camp Nou since 2009 it was the visitors who started the brighter, creating the game's first chance after eight minutes, however Jordi Alba was able to clear Garcia's cross with Lucas Vazquez poised to tap in from close range. Barcelona did not heed the early warning, and they soon found themselves behind. Felipe Caicedo challenged Sergio Busquets just inside the Barcelona half, and as the Camp Nou waited for a whistle that never came from referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva, Sergio Garcia ran directly at a static Pique before firing past Claudio Bravo to stun the hosts. It was Espanyol's first goal at the home of their illustrious neighbours since Ivan De La Pena's double saw them record a 2-1 win there five years ago. Barcelona then reacted, with Xavi Hernandez, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic all seeing chances come and go as they began to dominate play.
