S
he wakes up every morning hoping this will be a good day. Sixteen-year-old Savita (name changed to protect her identity) hopes she somehow finds the strength to trudge the 5-km distance to the nearest village with a functioning water-pump. She will have to fill four water cans, walk back 5 km in the hot, unforgiving sun and still find the strength to attend school that afternoon. Her breakfast consists of two jowar bhakris, some leftover dal and a red chilli. This surely will not suffice to keep her going, but it is all her family can afford. Savita wants to be an English teacher. She loves the silly rules of English grammar and compares their irregularities to the rough, unforgiving and unpredictable terrain and climate of her home. Dry for most of the year, Marathwada receives sparse rainfall during the annual monsoon and begrudgingly allows a façade of a green carpet to cover the otherwise dusty, sunburnt plateau. Water scarcity only begins to describe the list of issues faced by the people of Marathwada. River water and ground water is tapped limitlessly for the cultivation of waterhungry sugarcane, while most of the other farmlands remain bare and uncultivated. Most villages do not have access to water as the water levels in the ground have fallen much lower than the 200-feet allowed by the government. Some villages still have functioning waterpumps, but their tolerance towards sharing the precious resource with nearby villages might run out faster than the available water. The situation is grim. Savita smiles when we ask her

Most of Maharashtra’s children will drop out or discontinue their education after Standard 8, because of the lack of secondary and higher secondary schools in the state
Lack of an adequate number of secondary and higher secondary schools... aharashtra boasts of her chance at a complete M 1,06,495 schools as per the education because free and latest U-DISE (Unified District compulsory education is legally Information System for Education) statistics, out of which only 86,481 (81.2%) are government-run schools. The total number of schools offering secondary education facilities (private and government), however, is just 22,554 (21%); while the total number of schools with facilities for higher secondary education is a measly 8,407 (7.8%). What this basically means is that students from 79% of Maharashtra’s schools will find it difficult to make a smooth transition from elementary to secondary education, while students from 92% of the state’s schools might not stand a chance at acquiring a higher secondary education. Savita is one among the millions of Maharashtra’s children who will be denied an education only because of the lack of an adequate number of secondary and higher secondary schools. Like many others, she will also stand the threat of losing
sanctioned only till the age of 14 (roughly Standard 8). As she leaves us to go back home to make the evening meal, we ask Savita what she wants to do for her village right now. “I want to open a library for my village. A library where we can get all kinds of books — in English, Hindi and Marathi; simple ones, tough ones, stories, biographies and any book that will teach us something new. I would be glad to handle this library and encourage everyone in the village to read,” Savita tells us as she walks away, beaming. CRY (Child Rights and You) works with Savita’s community of tribals in Latur district in Maharashtra. CRY along with its partner, Kalapandari Magasvargiya Adivasi Gramin Vikas Sanstha (KMAGVS) have been working towards creating safer environments for the children of these forgotten villages, ensuring free and compulsory education, protection and security since 1999.
how she got so far in her education. She replies, “It was hard initially, but the education being free made it much easier. My parents didn’t need much convincing, as long as I did the required house work. It got tougher when I reached Standard 8. My parents now had to pay for my education. Initially, they were a bit worried, but as my performance was good, they decided to let me study. I am now appearing for my secondary school certificate examinations.” Savita represents a large population of young adults in the Marathwada region. Their dreams are big, but these dreams are often betrayed by the lack of access to proper education. Savita will probably drop out of school after her SSC, unless her parents change their mind and agree to send her to nearby Latur —
the closest city with higher secondary schools. Savita seems positive this will happen. Most other young girls of Savita’s age in the village, however, might not have similar luck. While interacting with members of the Balgath — a children’s forum — a lot of issues are spoken about. Savita leads a group of young girls who speak to family elders when they try to get their underage daughters married. “We try our best, we give them examples of other young girls who have managed to do a lot with their life. Sadly, we often fail,” says Savita. Thirteen-year-old Shyam thinks otherwise. “Nobody stops these girls from studying. If they aren’t smart enough, it is better that they get married, no?” he asks. Fifteen-year-old Radhika is quick to respond saying, “Most of them are smart; they’re just scared of school and the punishments from the teachers. They prefer early marriages rather than being beaten in school. They are young and they do not know what is good for them.” Education in the Marathwada region is in a very bad condition. While children groups, mid-day meals and several other government-backed schemes try half-heartedly to bring the children to school; the lack of sufficient secondary and higher secondary schools ensure that more than half of the children enrolled drop out before Standard 10.

Tuberculosis can be treated by common heartburn drug
A common over-the-counter drug used to treat heartburn could help fight the deadly tuberculosis, a new study has claimed. Testing thousands of approved drugs, scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland identified the unlikely anti-tuberculosis drug: the antacid lansoprazole (Prevacid). Tuberculosis continues to be a global pandemic, second only to AIDS as the greatest single-agent killer in the world. In 2013 alone, the TB bug Mycobacterium tuberculosis caused 1.5 million deaths and almost nine million new infections, researchers said. Resistance to TB drugs is widespread, creating an urgent need for new medicines. EPFL scientists have now identified lansoprazole, a widely used, over-the-counter antacid, as an excellent candidate against tuberculosis. It takes well over ten years for a new tuberculosis drug to complete these trials and be approved for human use. Meanwhile, traditional antibiotics have led many strains of
tuberculosis bacteria to evolve multi-drug resistance. Millions of new chemical compounds have been tested for their ability to disrupt the growth of M tuberculosis in the test tube, but discouragingly few are currently in clinical trials, researchers said. Stewart Cole's lab at EPFL used a robotised system that gives candidate drugs to cultured lung cells that have been infected with M tuberculosis. Scientists screened a large panel of already approved drugs, and identified the blockbuster antacid lansoprazole, as a potential antituberculosis medication. Lansoprazole was found to be effective against M tuberculosis but only when the bacterium grows inside cells. This metabolite targets a particular enzyme that is crucial for the bacterium to produce energy, thereby killing it off. In addition, when the scientists tested lansoprazole against a wide range of other bacteria, it proved to be highly selective for M tuberculosis. Lansoprazole belongs to a class
of drugs known as "proton-pump inhibitors" that keep the stomach from pumping too much acid, thus preventing heartburn and ulcers. "Being highly active against drugresistant strains of M tuberculosis, this novel class of drugs provides us with an excellent opportunity to treat tuberculosis," Cole added.

Is your smartphone making you dumb? Smartphones may be detrimental to the users' ability to learn, a yearlong study of first-time mobile device users suggests. The research shows the selfrated impact of smartphones among the users. "Smartphone technology is penetrating world markets and becoming abundant in most college settings," said Philip Kortum, assistant professor of psychology at Rice University in Houston and the study's co-author. "We were interested to see how students with no prior experience using smartphones thought they impacted their education," said Kortum. The research shows that while users initially believed the mobile devices would improve their ability to perform well with homework and tests and ultimately get better grades, the opposite was reported at the end of the study.

Committee report on Mumbai toll entry points by month-end By Prashant Hamine
T
he committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary, Public Works Department (PWD) Anand Kulkarni is expected to submit its report to the government about the toll booths at five entry points of Mumbai by month end. Minister for Public Works Department (PWD) Chandrakant Patil had recently constituted a committee to look into the options like exempting smaller vehicles from paying toll tax at the five entry points of Mumbai. The toll booths in question are located at Vashi, Airoli, Mulund, Bhandup and Dahisar.
Disclosing this to newspersons here at his Mantralaya office, he said once the committee submits its report the government will take a decision on it. The committee was also asked to conduct a survey of the toll booths at the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Patil, however, said the priority for government is to find out ways to tackle the issue of toll plazas at five Mumbai entry points. He added that the rights to collect toll at the five toll plazas of Mumbai has been awarded to the contractors by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Patil disclosed that the contractors, as per the agree-

It may be recalled that in the recent past Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had stated that the previous government did not put a 'buy back provision' in connection with the contractors of these five major toll booths. Patil stated that this issue has now become a legal hurdle to buy back these projects. It may be recalled that the government recently had waived off toll tax for four
Congress demands chemist at KEM to be evicted By Priyanka Bhatt
W
ith the onset of monsoon, medical systems all over the city have been under scanner. In one such case, a Congress corporator has alleged that the chemist at KEM has been there for the last 15 years, that is why it is being favoured. According to the corporator, shop has been leased by BMC for past 15 years in the KEM campus. Pravin Chheda, Congress corporator said he wants maximum discount for the people who come to KEM for treatment. “I have tenders from AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Raipur and other major hospitals who offer much more discount at the chemist shops. AIIMS Delhi, for example, offers 56% discount to the patients, while the chemist at KEM offers only 12.5 percent discount,” Chheda ex-
plained. According to Chheda, one of the conditions in the present tender states that only chemists doing business of more than three lakh can participate. “The MCGM collects monthly royalty of Rs.20 lakh from the chemist. Surplus conventional tickets when ETIM fails By Aroosa Ahmed
D
on't be confused if you are handed over with a conventional ticket instead of an e-ticket next time you commute by a BrihanMumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) bus in the city. If the Electronic Ticket Issuing Machine (ETIM) of the BEST doesn't function, the conductor issues a conventional ticket to the passenger which is 'valid', the BEST officials informed. According to them, the BEST is using all the surplus conventional tickets when the ETIM fails. This was brought to light by RTI activist Mansoor Darvesh, who said that he was amused when he was doled out an old ticket. “However, whe I enquired with the conductor of the bus, he informed me that the ETIM machine is not functional and so we give such old tickets in place of the electronic ones. The tickets are, however, valid. The conductor also informed me that the tickets of the denomination between Re. 1 to Rs. 5 are given.” Speaking to the ADC, Manoj Vadare, spokesperson of the BEST, said, “There are surplus conventional tickets with the BEST and currently we are using them as an alternative when the ETIM machine fails. The tickets are valid and are being used all over the city in our BEST buses.”

Nirmal Nagar cops form special squad to curb eve-teasing near schools, colleges By Zuber Ansari
A
fter several complaints were filed with the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone VIII and local police stations against the increasing number of eve-teasing and harassment cases of school girls as well as their parents, the Nirmal Nagar Police has formed a special squad, including a lady constable to monitor the area and teach the roadside romeos a lesson. There are four major schools and colleges in the jurisdiction of the Nirmal Nagar Police jurisdiction, and one of the schools, the Khernagar Municipal Primary and Secondary school in which the teaching is in seven languages, has hundreds of women coming daily to drop their kids who are harassed by the Romeos. According to Senior Police Inspector at Nirmal Nagar police station Sudhir Jabhawedekar ''Few people from Bandra (E) met DCP Zone VIII and complained that girls studying in Khernagar BMC school, Kaisar College, Purshottam High School and Raheja Architecture College were fac-
ing eve teasing problems and their parents too were harassed by the Romeos. “Taking a serious view of the complaints, DCP Virendra Mishra has ordered us to form a special team to prevent this social evil. One PSI, a lady constable and three constables will keep tabs near these schools, from morning 9 to 9 pm as we have learned that these street Romeos reside near these schools and colleges,” Jambavdekar added. One of the parents on condition of anonymity said, ''Many times we complained to the local police station and school authorities too about these Romeos, but no action was forthcoming, so some of the parents decided to meet the DCP and apprise him about the serious problem and he immediately ordered the SPI to take up the issue on an urgent basis. The special squad was formed last Monday and since that day the Romeos have disappeared. “We will not let these Romeos do any illegal activities around the school and colleges; we will arrest them if they are caught in the act,” Jambavdekar said further.

35-year-old engineer allegedly commited suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling fan inside his Lokhandwala flat, early on Monday morning. According to police, the victim has been identified as Ram Kumar Sahu. The initial police investigation points out to depression being the reason for the suicide. According to Oshiwara police, the incident came to light on Monday morning, when the deceased’s company driver, who used to pick up Sahu daily, came to his building in Neptune building and called him. After several attempts, when Sahu failed to answer, the driver went to his residence and when he peeped from the window, was shocked to see Sahu hanging. The driver immediately informed the Oshiwara police, who immediately rushed to the spot. Sahu hails from Raipur in Chhattisgarh and used to live in Mumbai along with his wife. His wife had gone to Raipur where she delivered a baby a few days ago. According to the police, Sahu was depressed from some time. The police has contacted his family in
Raipur and when they reach there, the exact reason will be known. The flat in which Sahu resided was given by his office. His office is located at Nariman Point. His family members were informed about his death and they will land in Mumbai to claim his dead body. Ater the incident the body was sent to Cooper Hospital for post mortem, but on the basis of primary information an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, police added.

in Vyapam scam F
resh evidence is available with regard to the grim goings-on in the Vyapam case. It has been established beyond doubt now that Namrata Damor whose body had been found in Ujjain in 2002 died a homicidal death caused by ‘violent asphyxia’. The police who had investigated the case had described it as an accident and closed the case. It was clear the police followed no proper procedures but closed the case all of a sudden. It is shocking that they did not bother to make proper investigations. Now that investigation has proved that the girl had been trolled to death and her body thrown on the track to make it look like an accident, new conclusions have been arrived at. A journalist who had interviewed the girl’s parents after the murder, died soon after — a mysterious, unnatural death. What becomes clear is that there has been a criminal conspiracy. A bunch of top officers, powerful politicians, rich aspirants have evidently joined together and carried a diabolical scam. This scam is totally different from others in that murder also is included in it. The Congress says there has been as many as 50 deaths. Now that probably Supreme Court directed CBI will take over investigations, it is possible more inconvenient people will be eliminated. The BJP has at last awakened to reality and it should boldly help the CBI to conduct the scam and bring the guilty to book.

HE verdict of the Greek population is unambiguous and final. The Greeks who belong to one of the oldest civilizations of the world and who can claim to be direct decedents of Philosopher and also the great warrior Alexander, have delivered a clean verdict against accepting terms and conditions those are likely to come from the European Union to bail the nation out from the present financial mess. This means, the Greeks stand by the stance taken by the national socialist government not to buckle down under the pressure from other EU nations and not to accept their conditions. It only means that the EU that came into existence in 1999 is on the brink of collapse. Will any European leader, political party or nation be able to intervene immediately and prevent degeneration of this experiment? That's the million-dollar question. All said and done, Greece always remained the weakest link of the EU. Out of 18 nations who became part of the confederation and gave up their currency, Greece always had built-in problems in keeping the pace with other members of the EU like Britain, France and Germany. To worsen the situation for the ancient nation, the tremours at the end of the last century broke the backbone of the Greek economy. Then it took up the challenge of holding Athens Olympics. These broke the backbone of the Greek economy, which never allowed the situation to improve.
Obvious toll on the economy If this was not enough, the people elected the Socialist Party to power. The new government, in its bid to retain the public opinion on its side, continued to declare and give freebees to its population. That took its obvious toll on the economy and Greece continued to go in a deeper and deeper hole. In Greece, all people working for government or private establishments, retire at 57 and are eligible for government pension. Moreover, to everybody's surprise, the government has enlisted some 55 professions as 'hazardous' in which the retirement is at 50 with full pension. One of these professions also included hair-cutting workers. These 'welfare' schemes introduced by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his government paid good dividends which were most popular in the recent years. Caught in a deep debt trap, the Greece Government always raised huge loans from vari-
ous sources, including the International Monitory Fund (IMF). Despite repeated warnings to mind its economy, the government continued with its so called 'welfare activity'. When the economy reached the no-return point and all agencies served serious warnings and ultimatum, the prime minister announced that it would not bend and called for a plebiscite to assess people's will. This gamble worked as over 60 per cent Greeks voted against the austerity measures proposed by the debtors. Greeks took it as an attack on their sovereignty. To woo the voters, Alexis Tsipras had vowed to step down if
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut the referendum went against his will and wish. As the verdict of the vote became imminent on Sunday night, cheering and chanting, thousands of Greeks, mainly youths, crowded into Central Athens celebrating what they described as their democratic victory, seemingly oblivious to the threats facing the near-insolvent country. Now that Greece has vehemently refused to take advice from more developed economies in Europe, the obvious fall-out is the ouster of the nation from the Euro-Zone. Will Greece be able to rise from this collapse to become a sizably able and stable economy? The answer to this question would also determine the fate of the European unity that has turned out to be fragile and weak over the last decade. Greece is not the only nation that is suffering from fiscal mismanagement. Neighbouring nations like Portugal, Puerto Rico and Turkey will soon follow. This will have obvious impact on the economies of other developed countries like Germany, France and the United Kingdom also. These countries have major trade and
A right action is productive of power S
ADI, the great poet of Persia, has said, Every soul is born for a certain purpose and the light of that purpose is kindled in his soul'. Now the question arises if a person is born with what the Hindus call karma: some action of the past, or something he has brought with him on earth, a good influence or a bad influence, something that he has to pay. No doubt there is truth in it and we can see that truth very often: a person is placed in a situation where he has to give, where he has to serve, where he has to sympathize without any intention on his part, as if he has to pay a debt to someone. He may not have the slightest desire to do so – at the same time it falls on his shoulders, he cannot help it. It is as if a higher at-one-ment has determined that it must be so. Whether the person does it will-
ingly or unwillingly he must give his time, thought, sympathy and service to someone else. This makes it clear that man is born with
MATTER & SPIRIT certain obligations which willingly or unwillingly he must fulfill. It also shows that, however powerful and however great a person may be, however good circumstances may seem, when there is to be a difficulty it cannot be helped; the difficulty will be there. And then at other times in life, in spite of all things lacking, a way is open; you have not to do much and it is all smooth. This also shows that there is a plan. It is not only qualification and cleverness
export with Greece. If it is not in a position to pay for their imports and services, it would have adverse impact on the economies of these nations. Moreover, if Greece decides to go out of EU, many more countries would follow suite, thus weakening the strength of the Euro-Zone.
Unnatural and Forced Unity The moot question that is being asked after the Greek plebiscite is whether to create EU type outfit was a wise decision. From 1991, when the cold war gripped Europe and America, the idea of majority nations of the West Europe started finding roots. It took concrete shape in 1999 when barring Britain, other 18 countries out of 28 in Western Europe accepted Euro as their currency with same value. This was an unnatural exercise as though the countries came under one shelter, their economies were different. For example, Frank of France and Deutsche Mark of Germany were far superior to currencies of other nations like Portugal, Turkey etc. Even the cultures of these nations have been different from each other. Despite many fallacies and self-contradictions, the Western European countries decided to live together and tried to prosper. Obviously, equal prosperity never dawned in many nations. This gave way to more and more disparities over the years. Nine years before the EU came in to existence, the Soviet Union had fallen apart. Some other nations in East Europe like Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia had split. The message was loud and clear; divided they could stand but united they were sure to fall. Now the question is if Greece is really declared 'bankrupt', what would really happen? If a nation declares its insolvency, the obvious fallout is the loan supply coming from various agencies and nations stops immediately. The supply of essential commodities like foodgrains, sugar etc. would also be stopped. This situation would leave the population that is now celebrating the victory against austerity measures, in the lurch. The Greeks who have been used to a lavish lifestyle and merry-making, would find it very difficult if not impossible to face such a situation. Weak economies often lead to unemployment that turns into unrest, violence and riots. Ultimately this results in anarchy. The scary fact is that jubilant Greece is heading for an unavoidable anarchy! Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut that make successful, but a plan is to be accomplished. There are times when you are meant to have an easy life, success and all you wish, and other times when you cannot have these. One may ask, 'Is it so that something is born with a person, or is it the effect of a person's action on the earth?' The answer is, 'Both'. Suppose an artist first made in his mind a design of a certain picture and then, as he made that picture, so he was inspired by it. This suggested him to change the design and, as he went along making the picture, it changed to such an extent that it became quite different from the picture he had made before. He had thought of putting two horns on a particular figure and now he made two wings: instead of an animal it became a bird. Even to that extent life may be changed by action. A right action, a good action is productive of power; it is creative and can help much more than man can imagine. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Vyapam scam is getting murkier IF it was a silly issue, then why Govt has announced CBI probe into Vyapam case (Reference to your editorial 'A silly issue?, dated 8th July,15). Politicians behave differently when it comes to their own skin, the same Sadananad Gowda would have made life difficult if it had happened in a Congress ruled state. Double standards adopted by BJP are no different than the previous UPA Govt and in both the cases it's justice which is being sacrificed and poor people have to pay for it. Nowhere in the world have 46 people lost their lives in thecourse of an investigation in a case and yet Gowda calls it a petty and silly matter. This shows the government's insensitivity and propensity to play politics at the cost of poor people. If at all there is anything 'silly', it is the attitude of BJP leaders who are trying to play down the case and save the skin of CM who was their poster boy not very long ago. Little have they realized that in their zeal to save the CM, they are digging deep into the image of BJP whose workers are associated with moral based politics. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai
VYAPAM scam is getting murkier day by day. The situation is going out of control. It was prudent on the part of BJP to send its senior most minister looking after the Home Department to take stock of the situation. Such type of serial deaths were not related to any of the earlier scams in the country. It is indeed a strange situation. Some scope is given for laxity and that turns into a turmoil as of now. Opposition is pouncing on the head of the Chief Minister and the ruling party is buying time as in other scams. Now the position of the MP CM is in jeopardy and the sword is hanging over his head which can fall any time in spite of BJP's backing. It is advisable for MP CM to quit the post pending an inquiry and if he is cleared of all charges, then he can come back unscathed. Instead just hanging on the seat just for the sake of holding fort is not in good taste and not in line with the Indian democratic set up. — C.K. Ramani, Vashi
QUITE possibly there must be 100 per cent corruption in Vyapam since long. Opposition is pouncing on the head of Chief Minister and the ruling party is only buying time are being shielded since 2004 till date. What was done by India’s ‘oldest’ political party Congress and similar other power hungry political parties for their countrymen, women and children for more than the ten long years, from 2004 to 2014 April is being repeated ad nauseam?
So far criminals and terrorists have managed to become politicians. Now Vyapam has proved that even politicians can become notorious criminals and terrorists and get away under flimsy excuse. This is not good for any democracy. The level to which our politicians have stooped make us hang our heads in shame. Our present day politicians have scant respect for the rule of law. They are laws unto themselves. People are watching helplessly. But they should not under estimate people's anger. I urge the judiciary to step in and punish all those involved in this heinous crime. The verdict should be so severe that none of them are allowed to stage a come back so that it would serve as a lesson to all those with criminal intentions.
Investigations began in 2013 but failed to make progress. Lalit Modi's revelations about Swaraj and Raje have not yielded much. For the prime minister, who rode to power by promising a corruption-free India, it is suddenly a dream gone sour. Even more remarkable is his silence - he has ignored demands to speak on the grave charges levelled against his external affairs minister and two chief ministers belonging to his party. Few still question Modi's personal honesty. But then, Manmohan Singh too was widely regarded as an honest politician. That did nothing to change the popular perception that he presided over a corrupt government. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

Alia Bhatt: very content curating English content By Chaitanya Padukone
Popular teenage icon Alia Bhatt seems to be ‘maha-khush’ with her new off-screen ‘role’ ( along with the seasoned multi-faceted Karan Johar) as the ‘co-curator’ of world-class English television content for the newly launched Colors Infinity channel which is the latest offering from the vibrant Viacom 18 stable. When quizzed as to what exactly was her profile, the ‘2 States’ heroine responded with an impish gleam in her eyes. “Out here, I am sort of a discerning critic who will be previewing a string of classy English TV shows along with Karan and recommending which ones to be aired. This new ‘Colors Infinity’ channel is like homeground for me because it has all my kind of shows and totally connects with today’s new generation. The best part is that we now no longer have to wait for ages for new shows to come to India. That too, one can watch a disruptive programming of three non-stop episodes backto-back in what they globally call ‘essential viewing’. In fact I already selected ‘The Flash’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ in the launch line-up,” enthuses the 22-year-old Alia who seems to have inherited the ‘curating genes’ from her maverick director dad Mahesh Bhatt, who is known for his candid assessment of movies.
Shiny Doshi, who hails from Ahmedabad has found her fame in telly- galaxy of stars after her super successful show ‘Saraswatichandra’ on Star Plus and now she will be playing the lead protagonist in the new Zee TV show 'Sarojini- Ek Nai Pahel'. Starting 20th July, 'Sarojini' will air every Monday to Saturday at 6:30 pm. In a brief conversation we got to know the amiable actor, a little more and this is what we found.
teacher. Viewers will follow her journey as the daughter-in-law who will motivate the meek women in the house to find their voice and speak up for their rights. As an actor, I had always dreamt of essaying a hard-hitting role like ‘Damini’. So, after I heard an initial narration of Sarojini, I waited six months for the show to materialise, not taking on any other assignments.
By Sandeep Hattangadi
What made you accept this show especially after you found stardom after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s popular show ‘Saraswatichandra’? Zee TV has always presented audiences with stories that have questioned prevalent mindsets, touched upon subjects close to the hearts of its viewers and been instrumental in driving a positive social change through its fiction shows and 'Sarojini' captures the role education plays in making women more independent and confident of asserting themselves in their own households. The primary reason I chose this show was that 'Sarojini' truly embodies the spirit and strength of every contemporary Indian woman – she’s confident and bold and at the same time, has her family values intact. It drives in a message that if you want to drive real change, it has to begin at home. I am sure every girl will relate to my character. Tell us something about the tele scenario of the show? Set in the rustic interiors of Uttar Pradesh, the show traces the journey of Sarojini - a strong, well-educated girl who gets married into a family with a regressive patriarchal set up - a household governed, dominated and practically ruled by her over-bearing, chauvinistic father-in-law Dushyant! No, we aren’t talking about relationships; we’re talking about the match-n-match trend! Wearing the same colour or print from head to toe may sound garish, but Yamini Walia & Sara Shah got a few fashion experts to tell us how to get it right
W
hile some of us are blessed with a natural affinity for mixing and matching prints and colours, the rest of us would rather have a stylist on call to make those incredibly tough decisions for us. But, what if you could pick the same print or style your entire outfit in the same colour? From denim on denim to floral print overdoses, we’ve seen how these can go terribly wrong. However, it’s possible to style this right! We give you the lowdown on this trend.
ExpErt spEak You definitely need fashion experts to help you style this trend. Here we speak to a few fashion experts who give us some helpful tips.
Varun Bahl, Designer “This is a chic and effortless look to put together, but the trick is not to overdo it. This summer we saw the rise of abstract and floral prints for women. However, our menswear from the KJ+VB (Karan Johar+Varun Bahl) line has monochrome design and styling where we have worked around one colour dressing and bold prints.” n His tip You could blend single-print outfits with accessories in solid colours. In monochrome dressing, play around with tints and shades of the colour. The trick is to find a clear differentiation between the pieces one is wearing while maintaining the harmony and balance of the look. It is also important to pick a print that embraces your body type.
kunal anil tanna, Designer “Overall prints are in vogue this season, not only for western but also Indian outfits. A perfectly balanced print that suits your body type can look very chic.” n His tip It is a good idea to accessorise your ensemble with neutral coloured or contrasting belt or shoes. This helps break the monotony and enhance the look.

“I feel this look works in spite of being too matching and has tremendous potential to look good, especially the tone-ontone in the same colour style. Even matching prints can look dainty, feminine and chic. However, they should be styled carefully to prevent your outfit from looking very busy.” n HEr tip You can accessorise with striking colours such as a neckpiece, bag or shoes. Some prints need to be broken down with metallic colours such as dull gold earrings, chains, shoes and bags.
anika churiwala of aneehka “This is a very modern look as it makes you look slim and taller. It’s easy to wear and the quickest way to look sharp and minimalist is to pick classic or quirky prints, which give off a very young and fun vibe. For a more serious business-like look, stick to single colours, while for fun looks, quirky prints are a great pick.” n HEr tip These single-coloured outfits can easily be teamed up with statement jewellery or bags as they work as a perfect canvas for anything, whether it is a bold necklace, a stylish cuff or even a beautiful clutch. You can also make the look stand out by sporting a completely contrasting pair of footwear. Keep your hair sleek, put on a pair of sunnies and the simplicity of the garments will ooze modern style.
Baani sachdev & Nikita Jain of E.Z.r.a
sakshee pradhan, Designer “I feel that this trend is very fresh and young. It’s versatile enough to make you look like a style diva on any occasion — day or night.” n HEr tip When you’re wearing single-colour or single-print outfits, keep your accessories and makeup to a minimum. This is the mantra to pull off the match-nmatch trend. You can experiment with your footwear though. Bright and contrasting footwear will add an edge to your look. Also, you can opt for a messy, high bun for a day event and for any evening soiree you can let your hair down or go for a neat pony tail.
this trend. But in fact, single print takes guts, commitment, and knowledge of shapes and proportions. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it! The main point to remember here is to pick tailored pieces. A streamlined silhouette reins in the print, allowing you to shine, rather than drown in checkers or florals. If your print is bolder, choose a truncated hemline and pair it with a pair of elegant heels. Another trick to balancing an overall print is by breaking it up with a basic, solid colour. This makes your outfit look more balanced and modern. Basic wide belts, jackets or a classic white shirt are great. Adding basic colours is one of the best strategies to wearing prints subtly.
“We personally feel this is one of the classiest looks and styles of dressing. It can be underplayed or made vibrant, depending on the accessories you choose. It is a simpler and cleaner approach to looking great.” n tHEir tip Styling is usually key in such looks. However, we believe it is best when you put your personality in it, and don’t follow any particular rule. You can go completely muted and highlight any one element or accessorise yourself with a pop of colour to make your look more fun.
anu Jha, retail Head of turquoise & Gold
Hirika Jagani, Designer “Separates are one of the most crucial pieces in a woman’s wardrobe today. Sporting print-on-print and samecoloured outfits completely changes your style. At times, wearing a pencil skirt with a shirt tucked in could make your waist look slimmer.” n HEr tip Make same-print separates such as a crop top and skirt look uber stylish with accessories such as a tote bag and a hat.
rimple & Harpreet Narula, Designers “Head-to-toe prints are one of the biggest trends this season. Pushing fashion to the limit is not for everyone, but if you eagerly embrace bright colours, big florals and bold graphics, these are guaranteed attention-getters. Inspired by a passion for retro, the energy of the art world and advances in digital printing, this season’s prints and patterns let you celebrate your individuality. Bold prints are most flattering in a silhouette with a relaxed fit. Separates contrast best with black, beige or nude colours, and accessories must take a back seat in order to rock this trend.” n tHEir tip One may think picking one print to wear from head to toe and calling it a day is the easiest way to wear
“I think that this is a relatively effortless, yet incredibly chic way to look polished and put together. Sporting the same colour in your entire look is very flattering especially for petite women as it gives an illusion of height. This look is always a stand-out on any occasion.” n HEr tip White on white or pastels, accessorised with gold is a great look for summers. A belt in a complimentary colour that adds accent and accentuates your figure. Playful printed separates look fun when worn together. A vibrant print like our handpainted lips and kisses print from the Spring Summer’15 collection needs no accessories and work well with even basic sneakers.
Fatma shaikh, Designer “A coordinated outfit looks sophisticated and complements you if it’s accessorised perfectly and carried off well.” n HEr tip Long vintage earrings contrasting with the colour of your dress, and a pair of stilettos would look good with a basic hairdo such as tied hair or a pulled-back ponytail.

NO MORE WEEK OF
SHAME. PERIOD.
Month after month, it gets more difficult to pick underwear from the pile of period panties that you have stored for that time of the month. But, what if there was a better alternative? Pooja Salvi speaks to Miki Agrawal, a New York-based social entrepreneur and the creator of THINX, to find out more about her project
n Why did you think creating this type of
underwear was necessary? A large number of women suffer from anxiety during their period, because they are afraid of leaking through their tampon/pad. We wanted to create underwear that actually supported women during that time of the month. Personally, I have had mishaps where I have had to rush home to change my clothes in the middle of the day, which began to get incredibly annoying! The last straw was when Radha, my twin sister, and I were defending our threelegged race title at our family barbecue, called Agra-palooza, and Radha got her period in the middle of the race. We had to rush to the bathroom so she could change her bathing suit bottom — while still tied to each other for the game! That’s when this idea struck us. n As it says on your website, THINX was
under construction for three years. We read that the technology is fairly high tech. What was the developmental process like for you? It was very challenging. We had to figure out how to make it anti-microbial, moisture-wicking, leak and stain resistant as well as absorbent, which would be perfectly suited to the most sensitive part of a woman’s body. Whenever we thought we finally had created a worthy product, we would put it through the laundry and often, the layers would shrink at different levels, making the underwear buckle. So, we had to go back a few steps to find the right material. It was a three-and-a-halfyear long process of trial and error. n Even a number of years into the advent
of technology, our country still lacks a system where sanitation and sanitary
I did a lot of research on a number of organisations to find the appropriate partner and fell in love with the model of AFRIpads. It empowers local women and girls in a big way. I visited Uganda earlier this year and interacted with women who sew, sell or use the menstrual kits that we fund. It’s no exaggeration when they tell us that their lives have changed. The rate of attendance in schools just skyrockets when they have access to the materials that they need, and the women that AFRIpads employs now have sustainable careers. The entire system is fantastic! n Is the product available for every woman
>> It took over three and a half years for Miki Agrawal and her team to create THINX products for women are satisfactory — what do you think about that? It outrages me! The tampon was invented in 1931 (by a man!), and it hasn’t changed since. The latest innovation in sanitary napkins was the introduction of the adhesive strip underneath the pad to prevent it from moving. Before that, women had to use menstrual belts, clips and pins to hold it in place. The fact that there haven’t been any major changes in nearly 50 years is because the subject is considered taboo. We aim to break this taboo as well as bring about innovations in this sector. n Your parents are of Indian origin. Did
they have conservative views about menstruation? Like many others who believe in the superstitions surrounding periods would, did they impose any on you? No! My parents actually didn’t teach me about my period; my teachers and sister
did. In India, my father grew up with his mother who wouldn’t enter the kitchen when she was on her period. So, my dad never really talked about this with us. n Did you have to deal with any
controversial/conservative comments? Not really. My sister and I became feminists at a young age. My dad was outnumbered by four women in the house — he was quick to learn! n Considering the climatic conditions in
India, will the durability of the product be affected or compromised? Since the innermost layer is moisturewicking, it will actually keep Indian women drier and cooler! n Tell us more about your partnership with
AFRIpads. Giveback is an integral part of our business, and it has been in place from day one — even before that, actually!
out there, irrespective of her size and preference? Absolutely, our product comes in sizes from XS and going right up to XXL, in comfortable styles and colours. n For how long can one piece of the THINX
underwear work, provided that it is properly taken care of? The technology lasts in full effect for 2530 washes, which is approximately two years of you using them monthly, provided you care for them properly every month. You have to rinse or cold wash them, avoid using fabric softener/bleach and hang them dry. I still have the prototypes from over three years ago, which continue to work like a charm! n When do you plan on making THINX
available in stores? When we can create our own micro-store — a store within a store.
Get your own! While THINX is not available in stores at the moment, you can pick it up for `1,840 (with free shipping) from www.shethinx.com

« JUST OUT! NEW BEAUTY PRODUCTS KAMA AYURVEDA’S NATURAL VETIVER & SISAL LOOFAH
When it comes to cosmetics, who doesn’t trust L’Oreal products? So, when L’Oreal introduced a new range, we were pretty excited about trying it out. I picked the Infallible powder foundation, because it went well with my skin tone and I wanted to test a powdered foundation on my skin. And, boy was I impressed. Instead of making my skin look dry, the foundation added the right glow to my skin. It also made my skin look smooth and despite the humidity, it stays on through the day — delivering on its promise. With scoop neck outfits, always pick a necklace that is short but will cover exposed skin. Remember to pick a necklace that has the same shape as your neckline. Pick multiple strands of beads or large pendants and avoid necklaces that overpower the structured neckline. At the same time, make sure that there isn’t too much skin between the sides of the neckline and your necklace.
V-necks
Strapless and tube tops In the sweltering heat of Mumbai, strapless, tube tops offer a good blend of comfort and style. Not to mention, they are extremely versatile, making them perfect to play around with. The trick is to draw attention to your collarbone, so wear choker necklaces that hug your neck. Pick simple pearls for a formal evening or multi-strand necklaces for a bohemian vibe.
Boat necks The whole point of a boat neck is to have a wide neckline that shows a bit more skin. So, if you pick bold, statement neckpieces, they will simply hinder the style. Instead, choose long chains such as a string of pearls or pretty beads. They’re the easiest neckpieces to carry off as they compliment just about any neckline. A long neckpiece balances horizontal necklines by drawing attention up as well as down, and usually flatter most body types.
L’OREAL cOLOR RIcH cORAL LIP gLOSS I usually don’t wear lip gloss, but I was attracted to this one, mostly because of its rich coral hue. The gloss adds a shiny, orange-y touch to your lips and stays on for at least 3-4 hours. You definitely don’t need to wear lipstick if you’ve got this one on. But, be very careful with the brush as its texture can get spoilt, which might end up spoiling your entire look! While we won’t deny that Sona has a great voice, we aren’t big fans of her dressing sense. The shoes just work with that outfit and her outfit itself look too baggy on her! We wish she would have accessorised her outfit a bit! Her hair looks untidy and her makeup is pretty loud for a day outing. We hope to see a better look in the future!
Prachi is showing us how to rock the matchn-match trend with absolute perfection. She’s carrying off her all-white outfit with absolute élan! Her nude heels and that chunky bracelet look perfect with this outfit. What we don’t like about this look is her hair — it’s giving off a very straight-out-of-bed vibe. Nevertheless, we like her overall look!

Sheer or chiffon turtlenecks look sensuous while keeping you comfortable. Since your collar bones and the nape of your neck will be covered, avoid necklaces that fit around too close. This will clutter your outfit, overwhelming your entire look. If you want to pick a shorter neckpiece, wear delicate necklaces with pendants to balance things out. If the fabric of your top is heavy, pick delicate necklaces with tassels or metallic pendants.
The slightly formal look of buttoned up shirts allows you to experiment with your necklaces. Pick short, chunky necklaces with bold pendants in bright colours. Since most of your necklace will be hidden by the collar, chunky necklaces are perfect to balance your outfit.
Moist as well as matte is a hard combination to come by in a lipstick, but L’Oreal manages it perfectly! While this colour looked like an extremely dark red shade when you open the tube, upon application it has more pink tones, which suited me perfectly. It’s deep pink but not dull, is perfectly matte without cracking or tearing and stays on all night. What else could you ask for? Rating ***** Price `899

I’m not a big fan of foundation, because the weather in Mumbai is just not suited to a face full of makeup. And, there are very few foundations in the market that actually last a good 4-5 hours in the sweltering heat and humidity. I was glad when I received the latest addition to L’Oreal’s foundations because this is an absolute must-buy. I haven’t actually tested it out for 24 hours, but even after a good 8 hours, you will notice that the foundation will not budge. So, I tried it out with a primer and the results were even better. Unfortunately, this shade is slightly too light for me and so, even though I use it everyday, it’s only for some under eye brightening! Rating ***** Price `1,325
L’OREAL INFALLIBLE POWDER FOUNDATION
Scoop necks
To rock a v-neckline, you need a necklace that mimics the neckline itself — it can be wider or narrower. So, pick large pendants with a long chain as the weight will pull the necklace down to form a v-shape. It’s fine to layer a dainty necklace under a chunkier one, as long as the smaller one is higher and closer to your neck. You can also wear a pendant that falls right on the neckline of your shirt. This frames your neck and can make a very deep V look more modest.

Loofahs are not usually at the top of my shopping list, but I do have a few favourites from some good brands. So, when Kama Ayurveda sent us their Vetiver and Sisal Loofah, I was excited to see how it would match up to my regular favourites. Unlike the colourful, fluffy loofahs that I usually pick, this was made with vetiver and sisal fibre, so it was initially slightly rough to the touch. However, it claims to help rejuvenate skin and prevent prickly heat — and prickly heat is a problem I am all too familiar with. The packaging is gorgeous, matching its extremely exorbitant price tag (it’s a loofah!), and it smells pleasant, quite unlike the usual ‘shop’ scent that emanates a regular loofah. While it’s a little rough on your skin in the beginning, its results are almost magical. Dry, rough elbows and knees got softer, prickly heat was reduced and my skin was left feeling soft and supple. All this time, it wasn’t my body wash that had been the problem — it was the inefficient loofah! It’s very highly priced, but it’s a product that deserves to be raved about a little more. Sweetheart necklines The sweetheart neckline is eye-catching in its own right. So, make sure you don’t overdo your accessories. Keep your look subtle, avoid drawing too much attention away from or towards your neckline. The key is to team it with a necklace with rounded pendants. You can even add a decorative clasp to the necklace. This way you are keeping it simple, yet glamourous.

SWARA BHASKAR
While Swara’s outfit is in sync with the current floral trend, we don’t particularly like how she has paired it. The top just doesn’t match with her bottom and those heels, even though they’re nude, are an absolute mismatch. Her hair looks a bit messy — we would have preferred her hair tied in a bun.

KANgANA RANAUT
It’s official! Kangana is definitely our favourite fashionista! We love her outfit and absolutely admire the way she has combined it with her hair tied in a bun, a simple black clutch, black stilettos and bold lips. She looks super classy and the dress fits her like a dream. Take a bow Kangana!

finD out hoW to stAy MotivAteD At A sALes job I recently began working for a sales company, and even though I was told that people often refuse to give you the time of day when they’re called, I feel discouraged every time someone says no! I know this has nothing to do with me and that they just aren’t looking for the service that I’m offering, but I can’t bring myself to believe that immediately I’ve made a call. How can I get over this? — rakhi Chandra, borivali Dear rakhi, We understand how easy it is to adopt a defeatist attitude, especially if it’s your first sales job. You’re right, this has nothing to do with you. So, your first step should be to come to terms with the constant rejection that you will face, and realise that this doesn’t make you a bad saleswoman. The real skill comes by making sure that you don’t let the first no get you down. Once a customer rejects the service, ask follow up questions. Ask them why they don’t want the service, or if they already bought a similar product, why they chose that one. After a while, customers begin to open up and it will make it easier for you to do your job. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

What Works! Looking good at work not only helps improve your image, it also makes you more confident. Anindra Siqueira tells you how to accessorise your work outfit
A
ccessorising an outfit is about more than just adding a few finishing touches to your look. You can make a dull outfit pop or update your look, just by accessorising it. A subtle sparkle of jewellery can help you stand out from the crowd, but when it comes to dressing up at work, you can’t go overboard! Take a look at what to consider while you’re accessorising a work outfit.
Why you should accessorise Suhasini Mehta, a personal image coach and soft skills trainer at Stellant Communications, tells us, “Accessories create a visual impact about you even before you start a conversation.” You’re probably thinking about the extra time that it will take to accessorise your outfit every morning and how unnecessary it is to do so. But, it won’t take that long to pick a set of eye-catching earrings or peppy shoes. Here’s why accessorising is a good idea. n to save money We know that you’re wondering how buying things can help you save money. But, remember that accessories allow you to fall back on a basic outfit that you can reuse. Accessories are cheaper than buying new outfits and can be used to change up your look. n to stand out How dull would it be if everyone wore the same white shirt/ blouse with dull grey or brown trousers and plain Jane shoes — every single day?! Accessorising helps you stand out in a crowd. n personal style Suhasini tells us, “Accessorising gives you the opportunity to create your own personal style. A statement piece can add a chic touch to your entire outfit.”
Accessorising right
n Draw attention A simple silk scarf in a
flattering colour will draw attention to your face and neck. n earrings Earrings are a great option for women with short hair, as they lend a balance out your look. n shoes and bags Choosing shoes and bags in neutral colours, which are clean and simple, make your work attire look more elegant. n the whole package When you’re accessorising, you will need to think of your entire outfit. Suhasini says, “If you’re wearing a white cotton blouse with grey trousers, you can add grey or black pumps, a black structured work bag and a lightweight silver bracelet, silver watch and silver earrings to your look. You could
use these tips Suhasini says, “Invest in silk scarves, lightweight jewellery, watches (with metallic or leather straps, but not digital ones) and bags (structured and classic) to add more panache to your outfit. Low-heeled, close-toed pumps add to your ensemble and create the illusion of height, especially if they are the same colour as your trousers.” n Less is more Remember that the way you accessorise says a lot more about you. When it comes to accessories, less is more. n Make it count Make sure that each accessory you pick adds value to your outfit, and isn’t there only because it looks nice. n Don’t go overboard Don’t let your accessories overpower your outfit — think Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, right down
also wear a colourful scarf or a neckpiece (in red or navy blue), depending on your work environment. For example, if you work in a bank, a scarf would work better than a neckpiece. If you’re in media or an advertising professional, pick a statement neckpiece.” We’ll end by telling you that subtlety is key here. Don’t decorate yourself like a Christmas tree. Suhasini adds, “When it comes to accessorising at work, it’s always better to err on the side of subtlety. Your colleagues and clients should look at you as a trustworthy, capable professional — your clothes and accessories should be stylish. Your accessories should spell class and blend with the outfit. In the words of Giorgio Armani, ‘Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered’.” >> With accessories for office wear, less is always more
to her pink, scented stationery. Suhasini suggests, “Accessorise in sync with your work culture and the corporate brand that you represent. Not every fashion trend is worth following. Sporting bling at work is a big no-no.”

>> The trick to fixing a leak is to find out where the water is seeping in from
Leaky ceilings and damp walls can be a pain during monsoon, but they don’t have to be! Dev Goswami brings you a guide that will help you find and fix minor problems on your own
T
he pitter-patter of raindrops is great when you’re sitting indoors, admiring the view from your windows. However, if the walls, or the internal plumbing in your house begin to fail you, you may find yourself running around with an empty bucket or rags trying to prevent the water from seeping in. But, there’s a fix to almost every sort of leak! Read on to find out what you can do about a leaky house.
Testing the waters Figuring out where the water is seeping in to your home from is the first step to solving the problem. If it is an outward-facing wall (a wall that is connected to the outside of your building) that has bubbled up, it implies that there’s a major problem in a certain part of your building. Water seeping into a wall connected to your bathroom on the other hand, indicates that your internal plumbing is at fault. In some cases, you may observe patches of wet plaster on your ceiling, or in a corner. This is iffy territory — sometimes, it may be a larger problem with your building, especially if it happens in your beams or columns. On the other hand, it may also be your neighbour’s house that’s the reason for your ceiling woes. Other spots in your home that can cause water to seep in include window sills and door frames, especially if you have a balcony. These are quite easy to spot and even easier to fix.
getting your hands dirty Fixing plumbing problems is often a catch-22 situation. But, people may not think it’s worth their time or effort to repair something as minor as a leaking tap. This is why repairing and fixing minor leaks on your own is a good idea. It will save you both time and money, and you can even make it a weekend exercise with your children! They will be thrilled at the prospect of tinkering around with instruments and learning how to fix simple
problems on their own, at the same time. n Though not a monsoon-related problem, bathroom fittings can’t be ignored. In most cases, all you need to do is remove a segment of an exposed pipe or the tap itself (remember to turn the water off first!), tape the part that gets screwed in with a water-resistant tape and screw it back in. Replacing washers (rubber/steel O rings) is another way to fix leaking taps. n When it’s your window sill or a door frame that is letting water into your home, the solution is pretty simple. Buy a water sealant from a hardware store and apply it to the edge where the window or door frame comes in contact with your walls. n Check your tiles for cracks that might be letting water in. Cracked tiles often do not result in leaks within your own home, but they can cause troubles for your neighbours downstairs. Sealing these cracks with water sealants will prevent water from seeping into your walls.
calling the experts Follow this simple rule — whenever water is coming in from a source that is inside or on the other side of a wall, you need to call a contractor or a plumber to fix the issue. Leaking pipes can be fixed, but will warrant breaking open a wall. An outward-facing wall that shows signs of seepage usually needs to be fixed from the outside and is something that you need to inform your building committee about. If the water has damaged your plaster, the entire patch will have to be broken, dried and then filled and painted all over again. You can also fix leaking walls by covering them with stone-based tiles — this will also add a nice touch to your home décor! However, remember to consult a contractor first — if the actual source of the leak isn’t fixed, the tiles will just conceal a rotting wall, which will continue to deteriorate without you even realising it!
The dangers of a leak We’re certain that you understand that leaky walls or taps are problems that need to be addressed at the earliest. But, procrastination can sometimes make even the best of us lethargic enough to avoid the problem for too long. And, this is just not a good idea. Bubbling plaster is the first sign of water seeping into your walls. And, while this may not seem like a major problem, remember that leaking walls and bad plumbing can damage way more than just the aesthetics of your home décor. They can damage your
electrical fittings, for instance. Additions such as air-conditioners or extra plug points often result in wires running through outward-facing walls, which are the most susceptible to seepage. And, if water comes in contact with electrical wire, it can cause short-circuits. Other aspects that you need to consider are stagnant water in your bathroom that can give rise to moss (especially if your tiles are old) and a damp, moist climate within your home, which in extreme, cases can lead to respiratory problems.
« 5 WAYS TO CLEAN YOUR WALLS Walls are the perfect background for your creativity, but if they are dirty, even the Mona Lisa will look terrible on them! Purva Indulkar tells you about a few ways to keep your walls squeaky clean intage photographs, vinyl albums, doodles by your toddler, and a poster of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover… your wall can be home to several pretty curios. But, with the increasing humidity and pollution levels, keeping these walls clean is quite a task. Washing them with soap and water will create streaks and stains, so use these methods instead to keep your walls spick and span.

If your child is a genius illustrator (or just a toddler who draws stick figures), your walls are bound to have unappealing artwork covering them. Instead of thwarting their artistic streak, mix baking soda with water, place the paste on a cleaning cloth and rub your wall until the stain disappears. This effectively removes stains caused by crayons, pencils, markers and ink.
If you clean your walls on a regular basis, you don’t have to deal with stubborn streaks every few months. Just use a broom, dusting brush or vacuum cleaner to clean the surface and corners of your wall. If sharp bristles are chipping your paint, tie an old tshirt or a cleaning rag around the broom.
We all have at least one member in our family who constantly suggests renovating your home. Whether it’s moving furniture or putting up a giant poster of Beyoncé, this person is eager to welcome change. However, it can be quite nerve-wracking for the rest of the family because this person loves to constantly moving the furniture around to experiment! To get rid of the black marks caused by objects rubbing against the wall, apply toothpaste on the stain, leave it on for a few minutes and then gently wash it off.
2. for The frequenT baTher’s walls
The problem with the congestion in Mumbai is that no one really has any privacy; so we understand if you’re forced to make all your life decisions in the shower! However, if you spend too much time in the bathroom, your walls are going to be affected by the moisture. The walls in your bathroom and near your sink are more at risk because the steam in the air loosens the solidity of the paint. Clean the walls in your bathroom, around your stove and those located near a source of water with a dry sponge to soak up the moisture.
5. for The commiTmenT Phobic’s walls
>>You can use different methods to clean your walls based on what kind of stains they have
If you live in a rented apartment or are averse to the idea of having one colour permanently covering your walls, use washable wallpaper. They can be removed if they become too dirty, but if you are attached to a particular pattern and want it cleaned, just dust the wallpaper and then clean it with warm water and cloudy ammonia. For vinyl-coated wallpapers, use a rag soaked in vinegar.

Keeping a relationship steady is a tough task in itself, but how do you deal with jealousy when your man has only female friends? Katha Nauriyal helps you with some easy tips
W
ith romance and laughter come endless bickering and anxiety, especially when you’re in a serious relationship. And, as much as you love your man, what do you do when a storm comes knocking, interrupting your time together? Before you overreact to the slew of girls that he is messaging every day (and meeting instead of you!), take a look at our tips to deal with dating a ladies’ man.
First, remember that men and women can be just friends! What a relief it is when your man is hanging out with his boys! There are no feelings of envy or any insecurities. And, of course, you don’t always need to stalk him on Facebook to see what he was up to last night. But, how do you feel when you learn that he’s been out with his female friends? Sure, you’re going to be a little jealous, but unless they’re a new addition to his life, there’s no need to lose any sleep over it. After all, you have guy friends too, don’t you? And, whatever romantic comedies may suggest, men and women can, in fact, be just friends!
Not every woman is a home wrecker Female friends can be malicious and they can be very protective of their guy friends, so don’t worry if you find it hard to blend in initially. If you think that you’re a victim of their scrutiny, it is only because they want him to be with the best. Don’t dismiss them as trying to get in the way of your relationship. As hard as it may be to digest, it is usually just genuine camaraderie. Not every woman is eyeing your man!
They can be the best help If his girlfriends know about you, you can heave a sigh of relief. If he wasn’t serious about you, they wouldn’t know you exist! Also, if he is emotionally close to a particular female friend, she may know a lot more about your relationship than others do. This is because women are often better listeners. So, take the initiative to bond with this girl. You may even get a new insight into your man, or learn about something that you’ve missed perhaps.
Don’t create drama
Now I am married to a wonderful man, have two cute kids and a small home-run celebration cake business which is doing really well and lets me spend time with my family. I actually have my cake and eat it too.
The fastest way to annoy his female friends is to create a kerfuffle over their friendship. So don’t even try sarcasm! It’s even worse to give ultimatums, men hate it when you do that. It hurts their ego and they end up feeling suffocated and restricted. If you think that his behaviour with his female friends is inappropriate, let him know in a calm, level-headed manner. He may not have realised that his behaviour needs to change because he’s now in a relationship. And whatever you do, don’t ask him to give up his friends for you — if they’ve been his friends forever, you’ll only end up with a broken heart.
Get to know them The best way to get rid of your insecurities is by getting to know his female friends. Take a little time to do that and they could become your friends too. And if they have stories to share about your man, it could even make for some fun conversations! Also your man will appreciate the effort that you’re making for him.
Mira has a high paying job, a swanky apartment, a new nose and a boyfriend who is nice but won't commit...
>> Don’t be alarmed if he has a lot of female friends. Remember that men and women can be just friends

When asked if he ever feels scared that there is so much money riding on him due to his pending projects, Salman said, "No it doesn't... Why should it scare me. Does it ever scare you because that much money is not riding on you." The 49-year-old star said "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", which releases on July 17, will bring back the innocence he had on screen in 1989 film "Maine Pyar Kiya".

The 'Shahenshah' took to his blog to write, "It is another Sunday and
the rains have been silent for a while...and the wishers and well beings of my life gather outside the gates of JALSA and in heavy multitudes and in some unpredictable crowd planning... it worries me no end when the little children and the ladies are subjected to discomfort... Shown To Women

A
lesser number of women as compared to men are shown online ads promising highsalary jobs, a new study of Google ads by researchers, including those of Indian origin, has found. Experiments by Carnegie Mellon University showed that significantly fewer women than men were shown online ads promising them help getting jobs paying more than USD 200,000, raising questions about the fairness of targeting ads online. A study of Google ads, using a CMU-developed tool called AdFisher that runs experiments with simulated user profiles, has established that the gender discrimination was real, says Anupam Datta, associate professor of computer science and of electrical and computer engineering. "This just came out of the blue," Datta said of the gender discrimination finding, which was part of a larger study of the operation of Google's Ad Settings Web page, formerly known as Ad Preferences, reports PTI. "Many important decisions about the ads we see are being made by online systems. Over-
sight of these 'black boxes' is necessary to make sure they don't compromise our values," said Datta. The study used the automated AdFisher tool to run 21 experiments evaluating Ad Settings, a Web page Google created to give users some control over the ads delivered to them. AdFisher creates hundreds of simulated users, enabling researchers to run browser-based experiments in which they can identify various effects from changes in preferences or online behaviour. To study the impact of gender, researchers used AdFisher to create 1,000 simulated users — half designated male, half female - and had them visit 100 top employment sites. When AdFisher then reviewed the ads that were shown to the simulated users, the site most strongly associated with the male profiles was a career coaching service for executive positions paying more than USD 200,000."The male users were shown the high-paying job ads about 1,800 times, compared to female users who saw those ads about 300 times," said Amit Datta, a PhD student in electrical and computer engineering. By comparison, the ads most associated with female profiles were for a generic job posting service and an auto dealer. Such discrepancies could come from the advertiser or Google's system selecting to target males, researchers said. The study was published in the journal Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies.

AIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was on Wednesday at the centre of a fresh controversy over reports suggesting that she had recommended former IPL chief Lalit Modi for a Padma award in 2007. While the CM's press advisor refused to comment on media reports, Rajasthan Sports Minister Gajendra Singh said, "I do not have any idea about it" on being asked whether Raje had sent such a recommendation. Raje had reportedly forwarded Lalit Modi's name to the state's sports council citing grounds of his vast business empire and his contributions in development of cricket in the state. When contacted, Subhash Joshi, who was then Honorary Secretary to the Rajasthan Cricket Association(RCA) told PTI, "Rajasthan State Sports Council's (RSSC) Secretary had sent us a letter for submitting Padma award proposal of Lalit Modi as he was RCA President and BCCI Vice President on July 27, 2007." Govt to ensure better layoff package for lock outs H
YDERABAD: As it rolls out a slew of labour reforms, the government is proposing to amend laws to provide greater social security by tripling the compensation a laid off worker will get. "If any factory is to be closed down, it is important to take care of the security of workers. I cannot save the industry then, but what I can do is see that the worker gets wages for 45 days. It was 15 days earlier. We are creating this window in the interest of workers when such a situation arises," Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya told PTI. As part of labour reforms focused on making it easier for employers to fire workers, the government wants the notice period for establish-
ments to lay off employees or shut down a unit be raised to three months from one month now. Also, retrenched workers will be paid an average salary of 45 days per year served, three times the current 15 day limit.
The changes would form part of the labour law reforms being contemplated by the government to protect the interest of workers and at the same time make them contemporary with a view to promote the ease of doing business. "Many Acts were made 50 or 60 years ago. Trade Union Act was made in 1925. They need to be changed. Change means they have to be simplified. Enforcement (of laws) is important. We are trying to bring in changes to remove duplication and cumbersome processes," he said. The minister said the changes will help a worker get wages for 45 days up from present 15 days in case of a lockout.
Govt bracing for stormy Monsoon session N
EW DELHI: Bracing itself for a stormy Monsoon session with Opposition closing ranks on several issues, Government has decided to go on the offensive to counter attack on issues including Vyapam scandal,'Lalitgate', black money and the latest socio economic caste census (SECC). The strategy is expected to be finalised before an all party meeting to be held on July 20, a day before the three- week session begins. The Monsoon session begins on July 21 and ends on August 13. Government sources said at the last meeting of Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on June 24, it was decided to battle out the controversies on the floor of the House and a conscious decision was taken not to shorten the Monsoon session. After discussions in the meeting on pros and cons of reducing the session duration, it was felt that the ruling dispensation should not be appearing to be on the backfoot from the very outset. The possibility of increasing the session for a week if required later was also discussed during the meeting. The sources said that the contentious Land Bill may not be taken up during this session because the Government is on a sticky wicket after allies and RSS affiliates raised objections on several of its provisions. Home Minister Rajnath Singh's earlier assertion that the ministers of NDA government do not have to resign indicate that the government does not want to be seen as buckling under pressure and hence it will strongly defend its leaders including External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who are under attack, sources said. On Vyapam, Chouhan seeking a CBI probe is also part of the strategy to blunt the Opposition attack, they said.

Your irritation over small matters may cause unnecessary discord on the home front.

ONDON: Andy Murray set up a Wimbledon semifinal showdown with Roger Federer as the world No 3 eased to a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win against unseeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil on Wednesday. Murray illuminated a rainy day at the All England Club with a ruthlessly efficient display, collecting his 150th Grand Slam match victory to move a step closer to his second Wimbledon title. The 28-yearold Scot will make his 17th Grand Slam semifinal appearance, and his sixth at the All England Club, against seven-
time champion Federer on Friday. "I felt like I played some good stuff considering he served extremely well for long periods," Murray said. "It was tough because we stopped a few times and it was difficult conditions. Although Murray lost his only previous Wimbledon clash with Federer in the 2012 final and trails their head to head 11-12, he can take heart from his demolition of the Swiss great in the Olympic final at the All England Club later that year. "I've played Roger many times. I know him well and we get on well, but obviously on Friday it will be a different story," Murray said. "We've played some good matches here and hopefully
this will be a great one." Bidding to become the first British man to win multiple Wimbledon titles since Fred Perry, who lifted the trophy from 1934-1936, Murray has extended his winning streak on grass to 10 matches. After surrendering his Wimbledon title at this stage last year, when he was stunned by Grigor Dimitrov, Murray was never in danger of another upset in his eighth successive All England Club quarterfinal. David Beckham, Prince William and his wife Kate among numerous celebrities packed onto Centre Court, the two-time Grand Slam champion delivered a suitably eye-catching display. Murray's progress was interrupted by rain.

Bopanna and Mergea hit 31 winners, 17 of which were aces, and saved three of the five break points they faced in the match. They next face fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, who overcame seventh seeds Marcin Matkowski and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4 6-3 7-6(2) in the other quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza remained on course to complete her Mixed Doubles Career Slam by reaching the quarterfinals with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares. The second seeds defeated Croatian pair of Marin Draganja and Ana Konjuh 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 in the third round.
ENGALURU: Indian women produced a clinical performance to crush New Zealand by nine wickets in the fifth and final one day international cricket match and winning the series by 3-2 margin. The win also brought another piece of good news as BCCI announced a cash award of Rs 21 lakh for the team as they fought back valiantly from being 1-2 down to win the series. The final match turned out to be an anti-climax of sorts with New Zealand being shot out for 118 in 41 overs as seven of their batsmen failed to reach double digits. Suzie Bates top-scored with 42 while left-arm spinner Rajeswari Gayekwad had the best figures of 2/15. Jhulan Goswami with 2/17 was economical as ever while Deepti Sharma took 2 for 22.

29 BCCI to challenge Lahoti report over Kochi Tuskers
New Delhi: The BCCI indicated it will appeal against former Chief Justice of India R C Lahoti's report that went in favour of Kochi Tuskers, the erstwhile IPL franchise whose contract was terminated by the Board in 2011 because of an alleged breach of contract. "We have got arbitrator Lahoti's report. The majority of the members are of the opinion of appealing against arbitrator's report. We are seeking legal opinion," IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla told PTI after a Governing Council meeting here. The BCCI has been asked to pay Rs 550 crore to IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers after an arbitration ruled in favour of the team recently. Kochi though, it is learnt, is not interested in the money anymore and want its team fielded in the next IPL season. Back in 2011, the BCCI had decided to encash the bank guarantee given by Kochi Tuskers and terminated the IPL contract of the franchise. The matter then went for arbitration to Lahoti. As far as the controversy over valuation of Chennai Super Kings is concerned, the matter has been referred to the Board's working committee. "CSK valuation matter has been referred to Board's Working Committee. During the last WC meeting in Kolkata the Committee sought legal opinion. The WC, after getting legal opinion, will refer to GC and further decision will be taken," he said.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa levelled charges that the duo weren’t supported well by the government and their sports association.
N
EW DELHI: India's chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand today rubbished all the allegations levelled against him by Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, and insisted that the Indian women's doubles pair are getting all the support from BAI, SAI and the government. After their recent win at the Canadian Open, Ashwini and Jwala had urged Gopichand to treat all badminton players equally or step down as the national coach, referring to their exclusion from the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme, which funds poten-

tial medal-winners for the Rio Olympics. Responding to the allegations, Gopichand said: "It is too often that they have been talking about this. I think they need to be specific about what their issues and problems are. This way blaming and pointing fingers without any basis and credit is just not done. "It is unfortunate that these things have been happening. I think it is high time we put all this to rest and we should put together our effort in improving our levels. "I think whatever tournament they have been playing,
Archers forfeit medal match, AAI orders probe
EW DELHi: Indian men's compound archery team has brought the country to shame after failing to turn up for a bronze medal playoff match in the World University Games, which prompted the Archery Association of India to order a probe into the matter. According to the communication manager of the World Archery Chris Wells, the men's compound team comprising Gurwinder Singh, Kanwalpreet Singh and Aman was not present at the start of the match against Italy at 10am local time in Gwangju, South Korea. As per the World Archery rules if a team is not present at the start of a final match then that game is forfeited. Expressing shock at the incident, AAI secretary general Anil Kamineni said they are writing to the team as well the organisers to get into the root of the matter.

"This does not concern AAI as the team is sent by the Association of Indian Universities. But many India archers were part of the team so we're probing the matter," Kamineni told PTI. He, however, rubbished reports that claimed the archers were busy sightseeing. "At 10am in the morning they cannot go sightseeing. Moreover, most of them are senior archers and they know their responsibilities." Indian coach Jiwanjot Singh, however, has blamed it on equipment malfunction. "Gurwinder's bow string broke and none of the archers were carrying a spare bow. So we had to send a guy to the team hotel and get a bow from the girls. We reached the competition venue exactly two minutes after the reporting time but the officials did not give in to our request," Jiwanjot was quoted saying in the media.
they have been supported by SAI, BAI (Badminton Association of India) and the government of India. We also have two separate coaching camps going on with Indonesian foreign coach and doubles specialist coaches being part of it. Whatever support they have asked for in the last few years have been done and they have played quite a few tournaments." One of the top doubles specialist, Jwala has been voicing her displeasure over her exclusion from the TOP Scheme for the last few months. Ashwini, too, recently hit out at the Sports Ministry saying
they are not getting the right advice over TOP scheme. The criticism prompted the Sports Authority of India (SAI) director-general Injeti Srinivas to come out in support of Gopichand, saying that neither the national coach, SAI nor the ministry had discriminated against any player. Asked about the Top scheme issue, Gopichand told Times Now TV channel: "Top scheme has an identifying committee and it is not for me to say. There are others in the committee. Even SAI has spoken to the media about this issue. The fact is that their names were included in the TOP scheme and they are definitely getting all the support that they can get." Gopichand said: "We have always done well in supporting the players and both these players, Jwala and Ashwini, are part of the coaching camp which is supported by BAI and SAI. We have a foreign coach in Bangalore and in addition to that we have asked for a Malaysian coach who will join in next couple of months, hopefully. "Under the Top scheme, it was said that as a joint program for singles, we will support singles players as a group. So four players were picked at that time. Similarly, doubles as a group will be supported in the TOP scheme. When we are calling a coach, it is natural that doubles players will be trained. I think we need to investigate further and they need to be specific that this is not done in the camp.

UFC contender McGregor confident of dismantling Mayweather L
AS VEGAS: He may the champion in Mixed Martial Arts, but UFC contender for the interim featherweight title Conar McGregor said that he would love to get into the boxing ring and dismantle undefeated welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather.
With the stage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship set for the fight night this weekend here, McGregor, who will take on Chad Mendes, is already talking about his victory and his will to fight Mayweather next. "(Mayweather was) 145 Pounds against (Manny)
Pacquiao and my fight is 145 Pounds. If you're asking would I love to fight Floyd? Who would not love to dance around the ring for USD 180 million? It is something that would appeal to me very much. "But if we were to fight, I certainly know he would not like to
step into my world, the world of pure unarmed combat where there are no limitations. But I most certainly would step into his world. And I would certainly box him if the opportunity arose, most certainly," McGregor said on the Conan O'Brien talk show.

OLKATA: Expressing disappoitment at the falling standard of Indian football, former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly said the AIFF must take a cue from BCCI on develpoing the game in the country. India suffered an embarrassing 1-2 defeat to tiny pacific island side Guam, ranked 33 places below them in the FIFA rankings, in their 2018 football World Cup qualifying group match last month. "Success of any sport nationally or internationally depends on the infrastructure of the entire system. ISL is for a period of two months. ISL provides the structure for the Indian franchise. But I think IFA (AIFF) has to play a much bigger role if the football in India has to go forward with the support of ISL," the Atletico de Kolkata co-owner said at a formal interaction yesterday. The retired Indian left-hander named the West Bengal football association (IFA) though he meant the Indian football body, All India Football Federation (AIFF). "It cannot be the other way round. Like in cricket, BCCI supports IPL and it is the body that runs the national team and makes sure they do well and the domestic structure is in place. Similarly IFA (AIFF) should play the pivotal role." Ganguly however said ISL is a great platform for the Indian players. "ISL just began last year. It's a great platform for In-

Trailing Atwal by one stroke are Gursimar Badwal, Vani Kapoor, Ankita Tiwana and Saaniya Sharma -- who are tied for the second spot at level par -- after the first round. The event will culminate on July 10. Mehar, who won the event here last year as an amateur, started off confidently and was on par score till the sixth hole. She dropped her first shot on the 7th hole but recovered soon by carding her first birdie on the last shot of the front nine. In the back nine, the defending champion did not get the start she would have liked, and dropped a shot on 11th hole.

Los Angeles Galaxy new midfielder, Steven Gerrard poses with his new team's jersey after a news conference at StubHub Center in Carson, California. The former England captain could play this weekend for the defending MLS champions.
David Beckham a factor in LA Galaxy move: Steven Gerrard L
ondon: Steven Gerrard says former England team-mate David Beckham was a key factor in his move to LA Galaxy. Beckham spent five years in Los Angeles and won the MLS Cup in his final match with them in December 2012. Gerrard, 35, is set to make his debut in a friendly against Mexican side Club America on Saturday. "David is a hero of mine, a fantastic guy, a wonderful footballer, certainly someone I leaned on for advice before I decided to come here," he said. Having rejected a one-year deal last year, Gerrard announced in January that he would be leaving his boyhood club Liverpool at the end of last season and confirmed a move to Galaxy. Gerrard will wear his familiar number eight shirt at Galaxy, where he will link up again with former Liverpool
team-mate Robbie Keane, who has played for the LA side since 2011. "It was very nice to have Robbie around, he introduced me to the players and he also lent me some factor 50 as well so I didn't burn," Gerrard quipped at a news conference. "It felt like I was coming to a new school but thanks to my team-mates for making me feel welcome. "I had options to stay in the Premier League, options around Europe but I didn't want to compete against Liverpool. "I love Liverpool Football Club and I always will do, I'm still a fan to this day but I needed a fresh challenge, I didn't want to become a squad player for the club that I love. "It's all about success, I've come here to win, if there is anyone who thinks I came here for a holiday and a last pay cheque they'll be proved wrong very soon."
Liverpool urged to move for £32.5m Christian Benteke Dietmar Hamann believes Benteke will score at least 20 goals next season if he joins Liverpool
T
he Belgian striker has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield after snubbing a new deal at Aston Villa. Express Sport understands that Liverpool are preparing to meet Benteke's £32.5million release clause later this week. And after Brendan Rodgers saw his side struggle for goals last term, Dietmar Hamann says Christian Benteke is the perfect solution. He told talkSPORT: "Christ-
ian Benteke is tailor-made for Liverpool. "He will score 20-plus goals a season in the Premier League for Liverpool with the service he'll get from Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firminho." Yesterday, John Barnes warned that the Reds would be forced to change their playing style to accommodate the 24-year-old. He said: "Liverpool will have to adapt the way they
play to suit Christian Benteke. "When they play with Raheem Sterling, and Philippe Coutinho, they pass the ball through midfield and always want to score the perfect goal. "With Benteke, you get the ball wide and then in the box, you need to be a little bit more direct. "If he comes it will need a sweeping change in the way Liverpool play. Would that be a bad thing? Not necessarily, balance is important.
Tottenham sign Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on 5-year deal T
ottenham have announced the signing of Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid. Alderweireld, 26, has signed a contract at White Hart Lane that runs until 2020. A statement on Atletico's official website added: "Atletico
de Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of Toby Alderweireld to the club from White Hart Lane. "The Belgian defender expressed his wish to our club of playing with Tottenham this season and the two clubs have finalised the transfer of the fullback to the Premier
League team." Southampton, who had the player on a temporary deal last season, believed they had signed the player after exercising a permanent option in the loan contract. However, Spurs have now announced that he has moved to White Hart Lane, and the de-
fender told their official website: "I'm very proud to become a Spurs player. "I'm very happy to be here and I hope to have a wonderful time with this team. From the beginning I knew a lot about [the club] from Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli.
