t was sheer hard work and perseverance of Balmohan Vidyamandir's Adit Daftary that enabled him to score a whopping 97.2 percent during his SSC examinations whose result was declared on Monday. While meritorious students are normally seen spending half of the time in tuition classes, Daftary decided that he would walk his own path sans attending any coaching classes. Just like him, Yash Salgaonkar – schoolmate of Daftary – believed in classroom learning and didn't explore the option of undergoing any coaching class despite having sound financial background. Speaking to ADC, 16-year-old Daftary said he bettered his expectations by a good margin. “Didn't expect to score 95-97%. I felt bad in science since I missed by a mark (99/100). I was supported and guided by my parents and especially by my elder brother.” Daftary, who is the captain of his school's badminton team, said he planned his schedule well in advance and was consistent with the time he allotted to his studies. “I studied on a regular basis since beginning of my preparation and consistently ranked in the top two,” said Daftary, adding that the game helped him maintain focus

Ananya Sawant, who scored 96.20 percent, said her success recipe was meticulous notes that she maintained in the classroom. “I was hoping to reach this margin. I maintained notes of every lec-

uktangan, which is an innovative model of education located within mainstream Government schools providing quality, child-centred, inclusive English-medium schooling to thousands of underprivileged children in Mumbai, achieved a 100 per cent result in SSC whose results that were out yesterday. Among the toppers are Sunny Gupta (dyslexic) who scored 83.2 per cent and Vignesh Gantyala (mild autism) who scored 76.2 per cent. Usha Laxman, Director-Resources, while expressing her happiness due to the second consecutive 100 per cent SSC result said, “The most impactful aspect of our model is inclusion. In most schools, teachers are not equipped to nurture students with learning disabilities and hence refer them to special schools. This destroys their self-esteem as they are labeled and viewed as not having the ability to be mainstreamed or integrated in ‘normal society’.

The Learning Resource Group (LRG) at Muktangan is trained to support classroom teachers in educating students with specific learning disabilities. They also conduct individual / small group classes to improve literacy / numerical skills. Autistic and cognitively impaired students are taught life skills and helped with secondary behavioral problems.” Their students have also scored well particularly in maths. The highest score being 98 and the lowest 80. Usha also said, “We also follow a very comprehensive, child friendly method of teaching maths to our children.” The mission of the Muktanagan organisation is: “To evolve sustainable, replicable inclusive models of quality child-centred teacher education and school programmes in partnership with marginalised communities and to advocate them to the larger system.” Apart from academics, the organisation also carries out dance, music competitions, as a part of holistic education.

COLLECTIVE WEDDING.... Brides and Grooms at a mass marriage ceremony in Patna on Saturday.

Bees are sick of humans In a worrying development which could threaten food production, South Africa's traditionally tough honey bees -- which had been resistant to disease -- are now getting "sick of humans", with the population of the crucial pollinators collapsing. The seriousness of the global problem was highlighted when US President Barack Obama announced a plan last month to make millions of acres (hectares) of land more bee-friendly. Loss of habitat, the increasing use of pesticides and growing vulnerability to disease are blamed by many critics for the plight of the honey bees. The environmental group Greenpeace, which has launched a campaign to save the insects, says that 70 out of the top 100 human food crops, which supply about 90 per cent of the world's nutrition, are pollinated by bees. It's exactly the same as around the world, the bees are sick of humans and the pressures and the stresses humans are putting on them. In the past they were less vulnerable because they weren't stressed by intensive bee-keeping and pesticides and pollution. The foulbrood hitting

South Africa is the American strain of the disease, he said. The country's bees have previously coped with the European version. The fear is that the disease could spread north through Africa, where hundreds of thousands of people work in small-scale bee farming.

Right to sell the Sun

A 54-year-old Spanish woman banned from selling plots on the Sun on eBay has filed a lawsuit against the internet ecommerce giant. Maria Duran, from Vigo in the Spanish region of Galicia, has been claiming ownership of part of the Sun since 2010 when she threatened to bill solar power users. The woman registered the star in her name at a notary office in Spain, before opening an eBay account selling square-metre plots for one euro each. But two years later eBay pulled her listings, noting it violated its intangible goods policy and her account was blocked. She threatened to sue, and now one Spanish court has recognised her claim, 'Sky News' reported. A trial will take place next month, with Duran demanding around 7,500

pounds for payments she says she has not received. Duran has rejected attempt by eBay to settle the case out of court. She continues to sell plots on the Sun on her own website. Duran said that while there is an international agreement which says no country can claim ownership of a planet or star, she is an individual and is not bound by the agreement.

First ‘feeling’ leg prosthesis offers new hope to amputees

The world's first artificial leg capable of simulating the feelings of a real limb and fighting phantom pain was unveiled in Vienna. Surgeons first rewired remaining foot nerve endings from a patient's stump to healthy tissue in the thigh, placing them close to the skin surface. Six sensors were then fitted to the foot sole of a lightweight prosthesis, and linked to so-called stimulators inside the shaft where the stump sits. It's like a second lease of life, like being reborn. The former teacher, who lost his right leg in 2007 after suffering a blood clot caused by a cerebral stroke, has spent the last six months testing the new prosthesis.

will be integrated with the coastal road. With this the state government is all set to reclaim land from the coastal regions thereby setting aside its firm policy since past 37 years of not allowing any reclamation of land along the Mumbai coastline. It may be recalled that the coastal road was envisaged by the previous Congress led UPA government in 2011. However, the project failed to take off even after then Union Environment Minister

Jayanti Natarajan assuring in 2013 to include the project in the agenda of the National Coastal Zone Management Authority (NCZMA). That did not happen then and the project failed to take off. The BMC has already prepared a plan for the coastal road. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his tweets remarked: “coastal road will decongest the traffic of Mumbai and will create 91 hectares of green spaces. Taking Mumbai infra to next standard. “

‘2 Salesmen’ mesmerise 60-year-old, flee with valuables worth `1 lakh

A

60-year-old woman in Tardeo claimed to have been hypnotised and robbed by two salesmen who allegedly engaged her in talks and subsequently sent her into a trance and decamped with valuables worth a lakh from her person in an incident which took place in a Tardeo building on Monday morning. The woman’s daughter claims her mother could realise they were taking off her jewellery but could not resist due to the hypnosis. The incident occurred around 10:30 am when Meenakshi Mahida was alone in her third floor

residence at Bane Compound in Tardeo while the other family members had gone out. According to her daughter, Aparna Makwana, a dentist who has her clinic right below the building but lives in Worli, two unidentified salesmen had entered the building selling metal polishing liquids and decided to chance upon the opportunity after seeing her mother alone.“They skillfully engaged my mother in a conversation and somehow got her momentarily hypnotised and oblivious to what was happening around her. While she looked listless, they began removing her bangles and mangalsutra. She could subconsciously realise what

was happening but could not do anything,” said Aparna. Mahida then regained full consciousness after around an hour and called Aparna, who later informed the police. The gold bangles and mangalsutra are valued at Rs. 1 lakh.Cops reached the residence and recorded the senior citizen’s statement and registered a FIR of theft and trespassing later in the afternoon. “While there are no CCTV cameras on the floor, there are cameras below the building but they don’t seem to have captured anything. We are still examining the footage closely and will trace the accused soon,” said an officer from the Tardeo police station.

The cyclone which is around 600 kms far from the Mumbai's coast won't be hitting any coastal areas of India, according to the IMD. “The cyclone is not influencing the weather in Mumbai in any manner. The heavy thunderstorm and windy weather is due to the formation of the monsoon season that might begin in the next two days,” said IMD director VK Rajeev. Ponder awhile... “The fact is that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous.” — Niccolo Machiavelli

Right to criticise the PM few days ago, there was sharp critA icism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by some students of the IITMadras. HRD Minister Smriti Irani promptly sent a letter to the principal asking him to take action against the students for criticising Modi. Evidently she is under the impression that the PM is above all criticism and that anyone who dares criticise him needs to be punished. The principal of the institution imposed a ban on the students. There were demonstrations by students outside the place demanding the lifting of the ban. People who believed in democracy and the freedom of expression were surprised by the action of the government. As per the Constitution, a citizen has the right to express an opinion and he cannot be forced or be punished. The highest in the land can be criticised by the lowest. For the first time, a central government has sought to stop someone from criticising the prime minister. There have been criticism against many prime ministers in the past but there has been no action against them. The prime minister who has been the recipient of the strongest kind of criticism has been Manmohan Singh. The students who have been demonstrating had relief finally as the government perhaps realised the wrong it has done and lifted the ban. The BJP ministers must not be so touchy and they should stop taking extreme action at the slightest provocation. And they should remember our Constitution guarantees the freedom of expression.

EADS of institutions are not generally assailed. The idea behind such thinking is that the criticism may harm the institutions, which are essential for the sustenance of democratic polity. Germane to this idea is the presidency. Therefore, the President is spared even when he or she crosses the line that the office delineates. Because of this consideration, President Pranab Mukherjee has escaped censure even when a person at an equally high office has been crucified. This does not, however, give him any licence. He should not be exploiting the prerogative as he does. In his autobiography, which he purposely launched while occupying the high office, Mukherjee has justified the Emergency. His act was wrong from all analysis, constitutionally, legally and ethically. During the Emergency, one hundred thousand people were detained without trial. Press was shackled and all fundamental rights were suspended. The government was run by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s son, Sanjay Gandhi, and extra-constitutional authority. Yet, the critics let Pranab Mukherjee off the hook because of the esteem the office he occupies evokes. However, his latest statement is unfortunate. He says that the Bofors gun scandal was a figment of Indian media’s imagination. Having known all about the scandals, how could Pranab Mukherjee make such an irresponsible statement?

neighbourhood of Rs.3,000 crore. No doubt, Pranab Mukherjee finds politics a familiar turf but he left it when he was elected President. His grievance with Congress president Sonia Gandhi may be genuine. But that is between him and her. The nation is not concerned with what goes on in a political party. Mukherjee had taken it for granted that the key role he had portrayed as a firefighter during the Congress Party’s troubled times he could not be ignored for having served the dynasty relentlessly. But Sonia’s determination to make her son, Rahul Gandhi, the prime minister came in the way of Mukherjee’s political ambitions. Though he was exasperated, Mukherjee soon realized the mood

Funnel the kickbacks

and announced that he would not contest the 2014 election. Sonia readily agreed the position because he had himself cleared the deck for Rahul Gandhi. Nevertheless, since his election as President Mukherjee has been making speeches verging on politics. He has been commenting on the problems confronting the nation as if he is the Prime Minister of the country. His first Republic Day broadcast beat them all and had naturally evoked some angry comments. Several political parties like the CPI have characterized the speech as political. What President Mukherjee had said during the speech may be generally correct. For example, his remarks that populist anarchy is no substitute for governance or that there is a rising trend of hypocrisy in public life are right. But he had forgotten that he was only a constitutional head and had to observe the decorum which the elected parliament and state legislatures expected from a person who occupied that position. The office of Presi-

That Mukherjee was a loyal functionary of Mrs Indira Gandhi is well known. But how can he blame the media? He knows that none in India had even a scent of the scandal, much less the media. Rajiv Gandhi had purposely selected the Bofors guns because he could funnel the kickbacks to his in-laws in Italy directly. That they became affluent overnight is an open secret. Rajiv Gandhi had not whispered about the direct deal to anyone in the cabinet. None had any clue whatsoever. It was a Swedish radio station which broke the story first. The source was a ‘deep throat’ whose name has not been revealed till today. He passed on the information to Chitra Subramaniam, a journalist who was then working for The Indian Express. The ‘deep throat’ was an insider and felt horrified over the bribery, which was first placed at Rs.64 crore but turned out to be in the

dent is an institution which should not be allowed to be disfigured. Yet the political leaders do that. That Mukherjee should also be doing so is a sad commentary on his sagacity. President Mukherjee’s indiscretion may well be a ventilation of his grievance against the denial of prime ministership, which was due to him. He was an automatic choice for the post. He was tall enough in the Congress Party and had proved his ability at the various offices he had occupied. What he did not know — he realized it later — that Mrs Sonia Gandhi wanted to rule herself but feared to do so lest her Italian nationality should jeopardize the chances of her children — the inheritors of the Gandhi-Nehru heritage.

Stalking horse

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar

Sonia was looking for a stalking horse, a dummy that she could use to rule herself. She found Manmohan Singh fitting into her scheme of things. He was clean, competent and an ideal shield to attack from the behind. He had no group, all by himself, and would be dependent on her to continue as Prime Minister. No doubt, Sonia ruled the country through him for 10 years. It was a strange spectacle of power with no responsibility. Official files went to her residence and the notes written on her instructions were carried out without the deletion of even a comma. Manmohan Singh’s information advisors who have written books on his regime admit in print that he was a non-entity. The surprising point is why they have written this when he is not in power. Not even once did they bring to his notice the general impression that his government was being run from 10, Janpath, the residence of Sonia Gandhi. They too are guilty of misusing the authority which rightly belonged to the Prime Minister. My experience is that a Prime Minister pays scant attention to a President. The constitution framers, who preferred parliamentary democracy to presidential form of government, have laid down what the President can do. This has, however, been nullified over the years because political parties take the President’s wishes for granted. But with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the saddle, the change is already perceptible. Mukherjee’s comments on topics like the Emergency are decades old and he has not even remotely referred to the present. If and when he does, it would be interesting to watch how Modi reacts.

‘The more one forgets oneself the more one is helped’ T

HERE are persons who desire something, but by lack of concentration cannot turn their desire into a wish. Therefore the desire stays in its primitive stage all the time. Also a person develops desire into a wish; he goes so far and no further. But the wish must be developed into will. So the desire is not carried through, so to speak, and never comes to its culmination. Now this is a subject which is of the greatest importance in the life of every person in the world. No one can exist in the world without wishing for something, and if there is a person who has no wish he need not stay in the world. He must go somewhere out of the crowd; he cannot exist there. He must go out in the mountains and even there he should turn into a tree or into a rock in order to exist, because to be a living being without a wish is not possible. The difference between persons – high and low – is according to the wish they have. One wishes for the earth, the other wishes for heaven. The desire of one takes him to the heights of spiritual progress, the desire of the other takes him to the depth of the earth. Man is great or small, man is wise or foolish,

man is on the right road or on the wrong road according to the desire he has. Now coming to the question of the opposing forces: according to the Sufis there are Qaza and Qadr. Qaza is the universal will, universal power; Qadr is the individual will and the individual power. No doubt the individual power in compar-

MATTER & SPIRIT ison with the universal power is like a drop compared with the sea. It cannot stand against the sweeping waves of the sea that come and destroy it. Nevertheless, the drop, being from the same source as the sea, has also a certain amount of strength, and the individual will also has a certain strength if it wills to hold against opposing forces. If we want to make the individual will and the universal will more clear, it is in small things that we can do so. When a person is walking in the street and says, “I feel hungry, I should like to go to a restaurant and have a meal”, that is individ-

ual will. Another person goes in the street and sees a poor man, and says, “Ah, this man – he seems to be poor, he must have something; can I not do something for him? I want to see him looking happier.” As soon as he thinks of the good of another person, at once his will becomes the universal will. The reason is that the boundary that limits the will of an individual is the thought of the self. As soon as one has forgotten the thought of self, as soon as one thinks of another, that boundary breaks down and the will becomes stronger. The masters of humanity, those who have been able to do great things in the world, where did they get their will from? It was their own will which was extended by the breaking down of the boundaries of the thought of self. It does not mean that one should give up the thought of self, that one must never think of oneself, never think of one's lunch and dinner. The self is there, one has to think about it. But at the same time in order to expand, in order to let the will grow, the more one forgets oneself the more one is helped. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Maggi magic is over? TWO minutes Maggi noodle is facing tough time and almost extinct from the market after samples tested paved way controversy and the manufacturers Nestle were forced to withdraw their product from the market. The massive controversy surrounding Maggi instant noodles forced Nestle Global CEO to come out in open and declare his famous product as safe for human consumption. This is quite but natural that the CEO will not let down his company's product or the market share in a open controversy. Both Coca cola and Johnson products faced similar situation came out of the tight spot. However, the name has been spoiled and fame the product had achieved over the years came to naught and the company will have to rebuild its reputation and do lot of spadework to keep the Maggi flag flying once again. Incidentally, Bollywood stars, who endorsed this product for advertisement purpose faced FIR and now will face the music in the court of law. The two minutes product became popular in a very short time as both the household and hoteliers find it easy to make and serve it to the family members and clients respectively.

MAGGI magically disappears? Noodles are so thin that they will twist and turn and creep back right in. India is a market for about 5000 million noodles packets. Since our population is about 1200 million that works out to an average of about four packets per capita annual consumption. But assuming those who can afford consume one packet per week, the total consumer population is about 100 million, or about 10 percent of the population. Does this mean that the remaining don’t eat noodles? No – they eat the noodles manufactured and served on laaris, ie,

THIS has reference to your article "Maggi row: Clean chit from Maha and Goa; no excess lead, says Kerala" (ADC Jun4). L'affaire Maggi gets curiouser and curiouser. First the central and state governments went to town demonising Maggi. Their spokespersons appeared on television to describe in graphic detail the horrific side effects of MSG and lead poisoning. Now one by one, they are giving the noodles a clean chit. I have no evidence of course, but I cannot help wondering if large sums of money changed hands. After all, if the parent company Nestle are forced to shut down a major division in India, they would suffer a loss running into thousands of crores. It makes sound business sense therefore, to spread around a hundred crores or so to get the politicians off their backs. Also, the timing of this brouhaha is significant. Bihar politics ahead of polls SOME 'important' developments are taking place in the run up to the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar. On the one hand, we have the Netaji MS Yadav intervening in the Chief Ministerial candidate dispute between the JDU and the RJD. Whereas on the other hand, the present CM Nitish Kumar, not leaving anything to chance, is reportedly negotiating a pre-poll seat-sharing pact with the Congress. Behaviour Basics How do you deal with a child who has behavioural problems? Identifying and accepting the problem is just the first step. In the first of a two-part series on children’s conditions, Anindra Siqueira & Dev Goswami bring you a guide to help you deal with them

M

any people believe that a parent should never outlive their child; that it is one of the most difficult things for a parent to endure. Another on the list is if their child develops psychological or behavioural conditions, which can range from common ones such as hyperactivity or learning disabilities to more heart-breaking ones such as schizophrenia. In the first of our two-part series, we shed some light on behavioural disorders that affect children. We also tell you what behaviour you need to look out for and what you can do to ease the stress for your child. Next week, we will be telling you more about a few neurological conditions.

>> If your child is angry all the time, don’t ignore it — try and find the possible cause

The common ones Dr. Shefali Batra, psychiatrist, counsellor, author and founder of MINDFRAMES, tells us that the most common psychological conditions are collectively known as anxiety neuroses. While separation anxiety is the most common condition, phobias, generalised anxiety and obsessive disorders are other conditions are frequently affect children. She tells us, “Oppositional defiance disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mood disorders such as depression, form a large chunk of psychopathology — the study of mental illnesses. The early onset of schizophrenia, substance use disorders (addictions), bipolar disorder and pervasive developmental disorders such as autism and Asperger’s syndrome are some of the rarer disorders. Learning disorders or learning disabilities and attachment disorders are also included in the psychological disorders that affect children. However, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa affect them more during adolescence.”

WhaT To look ouT for Behaviour is a finicky concept. Sometimes, it can just be a simple case of bad behaviour, while at other times, your child could be suffering from a full-fledged disorder that requires medical intervention. While a

parent almost always knows when something is wrong with their child, some of these conditions are too complex to understand and you will only be able to identify them if you have the basic knowhow of what to look out for. break the emotion-thought-behaviour cycle that leads to behavioural problems. However, since these conditions are accompanied by a certain pathology, Dr. Batra cautions against punishing the child for ‘bad’ behaviour. She says, “Punishment does not find a place in behaviour modification. Parent education and guidance forms an integral part of the therapy protocol, where we empower parents with essential skills to help their children.”

tipS fOr tHe HOme

Continued from pg 13 « disorder is typically characterised by a disregard for everyone else. Children who suffer from a conduct disorder may tease and bully others, push, hit or bite others and may also steal or set things on fire. These children are often labelled as ‘cruel’ by those who know them, as their negative behaviour is often extreme.” n aDHD Attention deficit hyperactive

disorder is characterised by an impatience, the inability to wait for things and difficulty focusing. Children who have ADHD also repeatedly get into fights without hostile intentions, make silly mistakes and answer questions before you even finish asking them. Dr. Batra says, “This is a disorder with three different manifestations — inattention, hyperactivity and impulsion. There may be one, two or all three varieties of behaviour seen. Children with ADHD are frequently pulled up by school authorities.” n OCD Although this is a neurological

condition (like ADHD), it manifests in a behavioural form. Dr. Batra tells us that children with OCD refuse to let go of irrational, upsetting or scary thoughts. To lessen the anxiety associated with these thoughts, they engage in a type of behaviour — for instance, they may insist that things take place in a certain order without any exception — that may seem out of the ordinary to other people. But, they are very important to them. Dr. Batra says that children with OCD usually suffer from depression too. n mood disorders If children have mood

disorders, they can be sad or irritable for prolonged periods of time for no apparent reason. Mood disorders cover a broad spectrum of conditions and are relatively easier to spot in a child. n Separation anxiety Dr. Batra says,

“Although being separated from loved ones is always hard for children, it’s part of their development process. However, if a child becomes restless, especially when it comes

to going to school, birthday parties, sleepovers or camps, then they may have separation anxiety.” Children fear such situations and may complain of headaches, stomach pain and sometimes, these fears can even manifest as actual physical symptoms. n Social anxiety Children who have social

anxiety are extremely conscious of their social image and performance. They may be afraid of saying or doing things that they feel will be judged negatively. According to Dr. Batra, socially anxious children shy away from social situations as an escape mechanism. She says, “They are self conscious, even though they know that they needn’t be afraid. If left untreated, this behaviour is a sure shot harbinger of anxiety and depression in adulthood.” If your child exhibits any of these conditions, don’t be alarmed. Sometimes children display a wide range of behaviour,

not all of which is a psychological or neurological conditions. However, if you do suspect that your child suffers from a behavioural problem, make sure that you consult a psychologist “or psychiatrist.

WHat yOu Can DO Treating psychological or neurological conditions is never easy, but ignoring them is definitely not the answer. Such conditions don’t go away on their own. In fact, if they are not addressed, behavioural disorders can go out of control. Dr. Batra tells us that there are several techniques used by psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors to diagnose such conditions, which include having one-on-one interactions with the child and using puppets, music and computerassisted programs. Children with behavioural disorders are treated with therapies such as cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy is used in conjunction with behavioural therapy to >> Several children suffer from separation anxiety, which can manifest as physical symptoms

Let your child tumble, fall down and pick himself or herself up; only then will they truly understand the consequences of making mistakes and learn valuable life lessons from them — this is a sound piece of advice that is often recommended to parents. However, there is a minor, but important addendum to this. This tactic is effective only when your children are in their teens or are entering adulthood. When it comes to children who are as young as six-years-old, it’s important that parents do not encourage bad behaviour. Remember however, that not all kind of bad behaviour is a sign of a behavioural disorder — just because your children bully their friends at school, doesn’t mean that they suffer from a disorder. It could, and usually is, simply bad behaviour that can be corrected with an intervention on your part. If you notice any signs and symptoms that we’ve discussed above, you should seek an expert’s help, but Dr. Batra explains that most bad behaviour can be prevented or changed with good parenting techniques. She tells us to be wary of falling into the pitfalls of the two extremes — both, mollycoddling your child or being extremely strict (which could include shouting at or physically punishing them) can have negative consequences. She explains, “Disciplining is about preventing bad behaviour. In my parent guidance programs, I educate parents on appropriate discipline principles, scientific behaviour modification strategies and methods of democratic parenting in order to inculcate positive behaviour and prevent psychopathology.”

>> Pampering your child can promote negative behaviour

a real life example Dr. Batra tells us about the case of Varun, a fiveyear-old boy, whose situation perfectly demonstrates how pampering your child can lead to negative behaviour. Varun had reached a point where, since he was so used to getting his way by throwing temper tantrums, his mum had to deal with him urinating in a store because she didn’t agree to buy him what he wanted. Dr. Batra tells us that since Varun was pampered from an early age, he couldn’t grasp the idea of being denied anything. Every time his mother gave in to his tantrums, it reinforced his belief that by being angry or threatening to throw a fit, he would get his way. A behavioural therapy programme that he was in along with his mum, helped guide him and also taught her how to ignore his negative behaviour. Today, Varun realises that throwing tantrums won’t get him anything. He is now very courteous. But, it wasn’t easy — Dr. Batra tells us that it took her speaking with his entire family, including the nanny, to ensure that his temper tantrums weren’t encouraged by people giving in to his demands.

Black coffee

>> Drinking black coffee to combat a hangover will ease its symptoms, but only temporarily

Drinking black coffee may be your preferred way of staying alert when you’re hungover, but it’s just another bad decision waiting to be made. Black coffee may reduce your headache and fatigue for a while, but the symptoms will only return after an hour or two and with equal force. Also, remember that caffeine is a diuretic, which will aggravate your dehydration.

Greasy or fried food Salivating at the thought a breakfast of fried sausage and bacon? Put down that oil right now! Also, stay away from the cold pizza in your fridge or the leftover appetisers from last night’s party because contrary to popular opinion, greasy and fried foods are the last thing you should be eating. When you’re hungover, your stomach is extremely sensitive and eating greasy food is just going to make you feel worse. Not to mention, your body isn’t getting the nourishment that it needs.

oranGe Juice

HANGOVER DILEMMA

An otherwise wonderful and nutritious breakfast beverage, orange juice should not be your drink of choice when you’re hungover. The acidic nature of oranges, or any citrus fruit for that matter, will aggravate the symptoms of a hangover and irritate an already-sensitive stomach.

More alcohol This is for those who still believe in the magical properties of The Hair of The Dog. Yes, a cocktail will make you feel better temporarily, but it will also end up prolonging your hangover. All you are doing is delaying the symptoms. This is a sure shot way to make your body feel dehydrated.

Too Much MeaT The protein and carbohydrates in meat require a lot of energy to be digested. When you have a hangover, your stomach is sensitive, and eating too much of meat can lead to indigestion. Instead, pick scrambled eggs, which contain amino acids that will boost liver function and diminish your headache. >> Eating greasy food during hangovers can lead to indigestion

We’re sure you already know what you should be eating after a hangover. But, do you know what’s going to make you feel worse? Sara Shah tells you what to steer clear of if you’re hungover

S

ometimes, we make the worst decisions — and downing that last drink is almost always one of them. From the many reasons that make drinking excessive alcohol a bad decision, hangovers are the most painful. Nothing can compare to waking up with your entire body aching, while feeling nauseous at the same time. Most of us may even have vowed never to touch another drink again, only to go back to drinking at the next social gathering or over the weekend.

After a lot of trial and error, we have all come up with our own personal lists of food that we can eat, in order to ease the symptoms of a hangover. But there are also some foods that you should never consume when you’re hungover. These foods not only make you feel worse, they can also ruin your appetite, especially after a night of heavy drinking. So, take a look at our list of foods that you should steer clear of when you’re hungover.

« know more Should you really lay off high-choleSterol foodS?

For decades it has been recommended that you stay away from high-cholesterol foods. Anindra Siqueira tells you about a new finding that explains why you needn’t be so worried

F

or as long as you can remember, you’ve been told to avoid foods that are high in cholesterol. It’s said that high levels of cholesterol lead to heart disease, cause deadly thickening of your arteries and can trigger a stroke. But, a dietary agency has now taken a U-turn of sorts. As it turns out, foods thought to be bad for you because of their high cholesterol content, aren’t considered bad for your health anymore. This all comes from a bureaucratic sit-down, where a committee — the USA’s Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee — is supposed to recommend guidelines for food consumption to protect the health of its citizens, based on relevant research and studies. It convenes every five years to give its recommendations, and five years ago the panel deemed dietary cholesterol to be a health concern. But now, according

to a report published in The Washington Post, the group has found that cholesterol doesn’t need to be thought of as a health concern anymore. The report cites a change in thinking among nutritionists, who now believe that high-cholesterol foods don’t significantly impact blood cholesterol levels in healthy adults. Experts believe that the problem isn’t with foods such as eggs or shrimp which are high in cholesterol, but in the number of servings of foods that have high levels of saturated fats. So, what does this mean for you? Well, if you are healthy and get enough exercise, there’s no reason to avoid highcholesterol foods such as eggs and prawns. However, this doesn’t mean that you can unabashedly indulge in scrumptious, cholesterol-rich foods — if you have a health condition such as diabetes, these foods are best avoided.

Use Basil

2

>> Addicts spend a majority of their money on buying video games

To quit smoking For those who have resolved to quit smoking, but failed miserably, basil can be your saviour! Chewing basil leaves will help fight the urge to smoke, while the juice has a cooling effect on your throat. It is said to be more effective than nicotine patches, flavoured gum and candy in reducing the number of cigarettes that you smoke. Moreover, the antioxidants in basil will repair years of damage caused to your kidneys.

Basil has played a versatile role in providing holistic health for centuries. But today, the popular herb is neglected in favour of modern medicines and cosmetics. Purva Indulkar gives you a few reasons to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors and use basil more creatively

Mostly Bs Well, at least you’ve got your priorities straight. Videos games are a way to unwind, and you like to leave it at that. Keep up the good work! However, if you know someone who might be addicted, let them know and help them overcome their problem. Try not to be too persistent as they can get defensive, especially since most of them live in denial.

1 To target kidney stones Kidney stones are a common occurrence and the procedure to surgically remove them is painful and expensive. Instead, drink a concoction of basil leaves and honey for six months; it could help dissolve your kidney stones and expel them naturally through the urinary tract.

To treat insect bites The herb has a prophylactic effect, which means that it can prevent and relieve insect bites. If you are bleeding or have boils caused by insect bites, apply basil juice to the affected area.

3

To improve eyesight A deficiency of vitamin A can cause sore eyes and night blindness. To combat eye infections, put two drops of black basil juice in each eye before going to bed.

4

5

6

To treat common ailments Rich in phyto-nutrients and healing oils, basil helps to fight off malaria and dengue fevers. It’s considered a natural disinfectant as it protects the body against viral and bacterial infections. Chewing basil leaves every day can help to alleviate coughs and ease the common cold. To relieve stress Basil is an antistress agent or an adaptogen. Eating basil leaves twice a day purifies your blood and helps sharpen your mind.

8

To improve dental health A simple paste of basil leaves can prove useful in maintaining dental hygiene. Dry basil leaves in the sun, crush them into a fine powder and use this to brush your teeth. This also helps to counteract bad breath and massage your gums.

DAngers of ViDeo gAMe ADDicTion You may dismiss video game addiction as a minor problem, but it’s an actual condition. Especially in a time like this, when advancements in technology are neverending, it’s easy to get addicted to something as seemingly harmless as a video game. Read about some of the dangers of video game addiction just so you know what you’re getting into.

Aggression

Sure, we’re all aggressive sometimes, but many people admit that video games offer an outlet for their aggression and allow them to vent. The frustration that stems from this addiction can cause displays of unusual and disoriented patterns of aggressive behaviour, especially towards anyone or anything that disrupts their game.

UnheAlThy eATing hABiTs Since thinking about and playing video games takes up most of your time and energy, you’re likely not to be bothered about your eating and drinking habits. You are more likely to resort to eating fast food, frozen meals and other unhealthy items.

Many video game addicts are obese and are likely to develop health problems such as diabetes.

isolATion

If you are addicted to video games, you are likely to isolate yourself from friends and family, or shun any social contact . You start making excuses to put meetings off and try to get out of social gatherings.

Depression

Depression is one of the silent dangers and many addicts don’t realise it until depression has them in its clutches. Often, they don’t realise that their addiction is the cause of their depression until they stop to think about it. Not to mention, they may resort to playing video games, simply to escape being depressed.

sTress

When a person is addicted to video games, they are likely to be under constant stress from being unable to achieve the results that they desire. This stress is magnified when an addict realises that their life is in disarray.

No one can deny that there’s a thrill that accompanies playing video games. But, are you taking your hobby too far? Sara Shah suggests you take this quiz to find out if you’re a video game addict hether it’s on an Xbox, PlayStation or PC, there’s no age cap to playing video games. They are not only a lot of fun, they are also a great way to pass your time — that is, when you have absolutely nothing to do. But, what if you begin to ignore your life just to reach the next stage in the new video game that you’ve been playing? If you feel an unavoidable compulsion to play video games, take this quiz to see if you’re addicted. Also read on to find out more about the dangers of video game addiction.

To prevent acne and pimples Basil is effective in detoxifying your blood, which, among other benefits, helps to reduce acne. Simply apply a basil paste mixed with sandalwood and neem to help reduce inflammation.

7

Mostly As We’d like to take this opportunity to tell you that an adult has responsibilities that they shouldn’t shirk simply to play video games. Yes, they are fun; and yes, they do give you a sense of thrill, but that doesn’t mean that you should drop all that you’re doing just to finish a game. Video game addiction can be quite harmful in the long run and can lead to health problems, loss of sleep, anger issues and depression. If you feel like you may be addicted, consult a psychologist who may recommend cognitive behavioural therapy to treat your addiction.

do you have a Magpie-like obsession?

A magpie’s nest is blindingly bright during the day, because it’s filled with glittering objects! These birds collect shiny things by the dozen, thinking of each one as better than the last. 1. Do you often shell out exorbitant amounts of money to buy things? a) Yes. b) No.

9 10

As a healing agent Basil is often used in the treatment of ulcers, cuts and wounds because of its antiseptic properties. It strengthens your stomach and facilitates abundant perspiration. Basil is an essential ingredient in cough syrups because it eliminates phlegm from your air passages.

2. Do you sometimes feel an uncontrollable desire to possess a certain item? a) Yes. b) No.

else’s possessions? a) Yes. b) No. 5. Is your storage space overflowing with unnecessary things, but you still keep buying new items? a) Yes. b) No.

4. Do you feel a strong urge to reach out and touch someone

7. Do you get bored by routine? a) Yes. b) No.

Mostly As You suffer from a pattern of constantly losing focus and undertaking irrelevant pursuits. In other words, you exhibit symptoms of The Magpie Syndrome. To combat this, write down your daily goals and list out the things that you need to do in order to achieve them. Then list out all the activities that you feel the urge to perform, but are disconnected from your goal. Eliminate those that you can. Implement this on a daily basis and you will notice that your fixation has reduced without making too much of an effort. Mostly Bs You do not suffer from The Magpie Syndrome, but you have some magpie moments from time to time. This is acceptable because it’s natural for us to be obsessed with certain things for a particular period of time. But, make sure that this behaviour doesn’t stay over a long period of time and control your impulses before they turn into a disorder.

ake a look around you and try to spot children playing a sport. Not trying to kick a football across a sandpit, actually training to play a game. Now, look around to spot those on mobile phones, heads hunched over as they crush candies and subway surf. If you weigh one against the other, you know who’s going to win. Enter The Coach Crew, and life may be about to change — in a good way! After all, encouraging sport means encouraging the team building, personality development and fitness that it inculcates, right? We weren’t sure what to expect when we prepared for our conversation with Divesh and Gaurang. Even if you’d never met them before, you would know immediately that there was some sporting history behind their association. From how they walk in to their lanky athletic frames, we could tell why people would, as they told us, believe that they were the right fit to do the coaching themselves. They still play basketball together, and they do love to teach (their events have been quite a hit), but that’s not what The Coach Crew is about.

liGht bulb moments & inspiration When we start off by asking them about how the idea for The Coach Crew came into being, it’s Gaurang who, after a little prompting from Divesh, answers. He starts slow, telling us the story of a child they spotted struggling as they played basketball at the YMCA a few years ago. Somewhere though the story, the laboured, interview-friendly demeanour falls and their passion takes over, as they tell us about how the boy was playing football on a basketball court, being guided by a disinterested coach who was completely engrossed in his phone, barely looking up when he was asked for instruction. Divesh chips in to tell us that this is when the first seeds for what would ultimately become The Coach Crew were sown. Here was a boy intent on learning a sport that wasn’t on a flat screen, but he wasn’t being encouraged to do so. And, after growing up around sport, that image kept coming back to them. As Divesh explained, “We kept talking about it and wondering how we could connect talent with the right coach.” Connecting talent with the right coach — that’s probably the best way to describe The Coach Crew.

What do you get when two sports lovers put their heads together? The Coach Crew! The exciting new concept connects children who love sports, with skilled coaches who can guide them to improve both skill and personality. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami find out more from duo Divesh Nathani & Gaurang Bajaj, the brains behind the brand

>> The founders, Gaurang (left) and Divesh (right) process that was quite challenging. Divesh quips, “The problem is that the coaching industry is very disorganised. There is no data on past achievements — in fact most coaches are hesitant to talk about them! We say, ‘Oh, you’ve won 10 gold medals, that’s great. Can you tell us about that?’ and they are most likely to tell us that they don’t want to. They think it would amount to bragging, but it’s a question of putting down facts that can help people pick the coach they want.” This, Gaurang, tells us made them tweak the way they approached coaches — what they thought would be a formal interaction (mostly over email), suddenly became a more personalised, face-to-face meeting. Much like our interview with them! What they thought would take a couple of meetings turned into five and six, all in order to get coaches on board and obtain small, but important details — do they have parking space? Is there a drinking water fountain nearby? Is the information authentic, are there pictures? Gaurang places emphasis on the importance of being able to hold credence with parents, who are the ultimate decision makers. Divesh adds that it was a challenge to create a platform that was interesting enough for the new-age, younger generation, but still credible enough for parents to trust. Once you get the hang of it, it’s simple — you like a coach, you contact him and you’re done.

readY, set, Go! We prefer to exercise our fingers over a keyboard ourselves. But, speaking with people who you can tell are doing this to help others get the same satisfaction from sport as they have, we were sold. Getting children on board however, is a different ballgame altogether. It’s when Divesh and Gaurang start talking about changing sport culture in India that we realise that The Coach Crew is about more than connecting parents with coaches. From stations at Sunday’s Equal Streets event, to a recent impulse splurge on a portable basketball net (they plan to set up India’s first mobile basketball coaching), they want to expose children to new sports, not create the perfect business plan. Also, as Divesh reiterates, “Unfortunately, children won’t come to the sport on their own any more. So, the best we can do is bring the sport to them and allow them to choose whether they want to play it or not.” Gaurang tells us that their experience at Equal Streets was an eye-opener. “While setting up the net in the morning, I asked Divesh, ‘What if no one comes?!’ Then we saw that not only did children keep coming back, there were also a few who refused to budge from our station.” Add to that the adults who were thrilled to have a space to try their hand at shooting a hoop and it’s easy to see why this is a good idea. From seeing pure, unadulterated happiness on children’s faces (which Divesh tells us is something that really matters to them) to signing up new customers and parents asking whether it was the duo who would be coaching the children, they’re looking at this as more than just a service that connects children and coaches.

supportinG acts Divesh and Gaurang are supported by people who share their passion, so The Coach Crew has become a group that aims to improve sporting culture and provide children with lifelong advantages. This is where their tag line, Advantage You, comes from. Gaurang signs off perfectly, saying, “When they approach us, I want the tag line to hold true for them; I want them to experience advantage in their lives — whether it’s in the sports that we offer or in their careers and academics.”

>> Don’t indiscriminately take paracetamol if you’re pregnant

«know more Paracetamol and the Pregnant woman

According to a new study, you should steer clear of paracetamol when you’re pregnant. Anindra Siqueira tells you how it could affect your unborn son

I

t seems as though there’s no end to advice for what pregnant women should do and what they should not do in order to avoid harming their unborn child. And, several industries pray on such fear and doubt. However, a new study now suggests that taking seemingly harmless doses of paracetamol when you’re pregnant can harm the testosterone production in unborn male babies. What researchers did is quite interesting: they grafted human testicular cells into mice, as part of a method of research called a xenograft model. One group of mice were given a typical dose of paracetamol (three times a day) over a period of 24 hours, while another group were given the daily dose for seven days. An hour after the final dose, they measured the amount of testosterone produced by the human cell. The study, which appeared in the journal, Science Translation Medicine, found that there was no significant change in the testosterone levels of the mice that were exposed to the paracetamol for 24 hours. Those

Don’t be bizarre!

that had been administered the dose for a week however, showed a 45% reduction in the overall production of human testosterone. “Paracetamol is available over-the-counter and is often taken without any consideration of its side-effects,” Dr. Rod Mitchell, who is one of the authors on the research paper, was quoted as saying. “The study would support current recommendations that paracetamol should be taken for the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible dose.” The concern arises because the statistics tell us that a large proportion of women (about 65%) take paracetamol when they’re pregnant in order to alleviate the pain, especially since they believe that it’s harmless. However, if you’re pregnant and have been taking paracetamol, don’t panic after you read this. The research is in its infancy and there may be other factors to consider. If you’re concerned, consult your doctor.

>> Wash your hair with listerine to eliminate dandruff

How much do you really know about the medication that you’re taking? Some of your regular, over-the-counter medicines can be used to treat the most bizarre health issues, says Yamini Walia

B

efore you pop an aspirin or gulp down some Benadryl, think about the other things people are using them to treat. Sure, you’re using the medicine to alleviate a headache or cure a cough, but other nagging health issues could benefit from them too! Your local pharmacy could actually be a centre for some of the best medication, with multiple purposes. Read on as we highlight a few.

Aspirin We’re sure that aspirin is your go-to remedy for a fever or for mild, moderate aches and pains such as muscle aches, toothaches, a common cold and headaches. But, it can also be used to treat insect bites, stings and dandruff. So, if you were bitten by a mosquito, crush two tablets of aspirin into a fine powder, then add >> You can use toothpaste to clear out blemishes and dry up pimples

>> Crush a few aspirin tablets for an effective remedy against dandruff and insect bites a few drops of water to make a paste and use it to soothe the sting. If you suffer from a dandruff problem, mix the same paste with your shampoo and rinse it out after a few minutes.

BenAdryl Benadryl effectively treats a cough as well as other symptoms of a common cold and allergies. But, it also comes in handy when you’re suffering from motion sickness and helps you to sleep better. This is because its main ingredient, diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine, which can make you feel sleepy. If you have motion sickness, Benadryl can disrupt the chemicals that deliver signals of movement to your brain, controlling the feeling of nausea.

listerine Listerine is used to kill germs and improve overall oral health. However, the mouthwash can also be used to treat lice, dandruff and stinky feet. The active ingredients in listerine kill lice by making it hard for them to breathe. All you need to do is soak your hair and scalp with Listerine and rinse it out after 10 to 15 minutes for effective results.

toothpAste We all know that toothpaste keeps your teeth healthy. But, it is also used to clear up pimples, blemishes, mild burns and bruises. Just apply the toothpaste to the affected area before

going to bed and it should dry up by morning. Toothpaste kills bacteria, by dehydrating it and also absorbs oil. Moreover, it can also be used to effectively remove stains from your bathroom sink!

Vicks VAporuB Vicks Vaporub has proven its mettle when it comes to treating a blocked nose. But, it can also be used to relieve sore muscles, heal small cuts and cure nail fungus. Menthol, the minty ingredient present in Vicks Vaporub, also eases a migraine. To treat nail fungus, just coat your nail with the solution once or twice a day and to prevent infection, apply a small amount of it on cuts.

>> Trying to get rid of your acne with quick-fix solutions may actually aggravate the problem

ask our beauty expert BarBara, OUr BeaUTy exPerT, will helP fix yOUr PrOBlems

Dear Barbara, I have a strange problem — whenever I rub my skin vigorously, tiny, black clumps of what I presume is dirt appear. At first, I thought it was a result of staying out during the day and coming in contact with dirt and pollution. But, this happens even after I have a bath. It’s not a big problem, but I just feel unclean knowing that they will form every time I rub my skin. Is there anything that I can do? — Purvesh hingorani, malad Dear Purvesh, The black clumps you are seeing are actually dead skin cells. This is a sign that you aren’t exfoliating enough. Your skin sheds over time, and this dead skin begins to accumulate on your body. If you don’t scrub this off, not only will it lead to the tiny black balls that you’ve described, it can also cause acne. The solution is pretty simple; start off by exfoliating every day. We recommend doing this daily so that you get a quick solution for your problem. But, remember that you run the risk of over-exfoliating your skin, which can leave you with itchy rashes. So, after a week or two of daily exfoliation, cut back to once or twice a week. A scrubbing brush will work, but if it doesn’t help, use special exfoliating creams and scrubs. Dear Barbara, I have an extremely painful problem — my toenail is digging into my skin. I don’t know how it happened, except that one day my toe began to hurt tremendously and, on examination, I saw that the edge of my toe nail was digging into my skin. I can’t wear closed shoes and even when I wear open shoes, I suffer from unbearable pain. I need a permanent solution. Please help! — akriti Bhatnagar, andheri Dear akriti, What you’ve described is known as an in-grown toenail, which can occur because of improper trimming, foot injuries or a fungal infection. You shouldn’t take this lightly, not only because it can be extremely painful, but also because if left untreated, you could end up developing an infection. While we recommend visiting a doctor, there are a few home remedies that can help if it’s in its early stages. Soak your feet in warm water around four times a day and make sure that you keep your feet clean through the day. After soaking you feet, try to lift up the corner of the nail that is digging into your flesh. We know that this probably sends shivers down your spine, but it’s important. If you don’t think you can do this on your own, visit a doctor.

Acne AwAy! Having an acne breakout is embarrassing at any age. After all, waking up to a glaring pimple can ruin your entire day! National Award-winning scientist Trebhuwan Singh Raman, who has been awarded a patent to make a device to control a fatal condition of 'air embolism', on Monday called for fresh impetus to medical research in the country and sought private participation in the matter. The device, called "an improved drip chamber in a fluid infusion set", will help control 'air embolism', a deadly pathological condition caused by a gas bubble, or bubbles, in a vascular system that results in a blood clot or solid mass and ends up blocking a vessel. "A large amount of air, if delivered, in one time, can stop the functioning of the heart. The fatality of air embolism is difficult to measure," Raman said.

EW DELHI: After Maggi, quality testing was ordered on Monday for noodles, pasta and macaroni brands of seven companies including Nestle, ITC and GlaxoSmithkline across the country to check for health hazards. Listing out the total 32 such brands including Maggi, Top Ramen, Wai Wai, Yummy and Foodles, the central food safety regulator FSSAI also ordered immediate recall of all other such instant food products which did not have any product approval and were being sold in the market in an "unauthorised and illegal" manner. In its order for quality testing by all states and union territories, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said that "various test results on Maggi and some other similar products have raised serious health concerns" and therefore it was necessary to test other similar products, reports PTI. "In view of the same, it would be advisable to draw regulatory samples for similar products for which product approvals have been granted by FSSAI," it said, while asking the samples to be sent to the authorised labs for testing. "The safety of all other such products in these categories has not

been assessed as per the Product Approval procedures. As such, the same are unauthorised and illegal and cannot be intended for human consumption," the regulator said. "...You are advised to ensure that such products are recalled, removed from the market and destroyed," FSSAI CEO YS Malik said in a circular to the Commissioners of Food Safety of all States and UTs. In the circular, the FSSAI has also listed out the detailed parameters on which such tests would need to be conducted for noodles, pastas and macaroni with tastemaker of all makes and brands present in the market.

"I want to put the facts straight. So far as the anti-national activities are concerned, they (separatists and some sections of sikhs) are doing it since long," Dy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh told PTI. He was responding when referred to repeated incidents of raising of Pakistani flags and proPakistan slogans in Kashmir and pro-Khalistan slogans and appearance of posters of slain Khalistani militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Jammu. The state government has come under attack for allowing such activities. "The question is whether the government is acting or not? We have acted. We arrested (Kashmiri separatist) Masarat Alam and put him behind bars. We have lodged FIRs against others. They are being tried. Law will take its own course," he said. "So far as this issue (of appearance of Bhindranwale's posters and raising of pro-Khalistan slogans in Jammu) is concerned, we have filed FIRs against those involved," the Dy CM said. Domestic rating agency ICRA yesterday said gross NPAs in the system may jump up to 5.9% this fiscal from 4.4% despite economic growth because of lagged recognition of bad assets which is resulting in slippage of more restructured accounts into dud loans. "Reported gross NPAs will increase in FY16 with withdrawal of regulatory forbearance for restructured advances from FY16 to 5.3-5.9% by March 2016 as against 4.4% as in March 2015," the agency said in a note. The rising NPA estimate for FY16 is primarily driven by a greater proportion of assets restructured in the past slipping into NPAs again, ICRA's senior vice-president Vibha Batra told reporters.

weak monsoon is likely to be credit negative for India as it is expected to push up food inflation as well as government deficits, global rating agency Moody's said yesterday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its monsoon forecast for 2015 from "below normal" to "deficit".A weak monsoon is credit negative for India because it lowers agricultural output, increases food inflation and adds to government deficits," said a Moody's Investors Service report. The magnitude of the negative effect will depend on the actual spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall as well as policy measures the government adopts in preparation and in response, it added. “A weak monsoon would likely raise food prices, which have been rising faster in India than the global aver-

age. Because food accounts for more than 50% of average household spending in India...Higher food prices pinch household budgets in India to a greater degree than elsewhere, and hurt GDP...," the agency said. India's inflation touched double digits in 2012 and 2013 partly because of high food prices, but is now below the RBI's January 2016 target of 6%, it said. Decline in inflation and flagging private sector consumption as well as investment growth have led the Reserve Bank to cut the policy rate by 75 basis points since January, but the forecast of a weak monsoon season will curtail further rate reductions, the agency said. Inflation, as measured on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), has been in the negative zone since November, 2014. Retail inflation in April softened further and fell to a four-month low of 4.87%. Moody's said that below-average

rainfall in 2014 slowed agricultural output growth to 0.2% that fiscal year, compared to 3.7% the previous year, when rainfall was at average levels Agriculture comprises about 17-18% of GDP so lower farm output could temper 2015 GDP growth in the absence of higher growth in other sectors, Moody's said. Moreover, it added, agriculture is a source of income for over half of rural Indian households. The government plans to counter the effects of a weak monsoon through increased monitoring of rainfall and sowing, releasing buffer grains and introducing crop insurance programmes. Moody's said that subsidies to farmers and for food could dampen the effect of the monsoon, but would pose fiscal costs that the Indian government, with its budget deficits and debt well above the average for comparable sovereigns, can ill afford.

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve ease of doing business in the country, the Corporate Affairs Ministry has notified changes that further relax compliance requirements for private, government, charitable and nidhi companies. In a significant relaxation, private companies have been exempted from certain provisions for related party transactions under the Companies Act, 2013. Besides, private firms can now provide a shorter pe-

"Private companies have also been allowed to accept deposits from members without the requirement of offer circular and creation of deposit repayment reserve etc... Flexibility has also been provided in the types of share capital that can be issued by private companies," the Ministry said in a press release yesterday in New Delhi. Seven out of the nine sectors have registered a moderate to neutral business and hiring sentiment indicating consolidation in the market. City wise, Mumbai and Delhi continue to showcase exuberance in business and hiring, while Chennai’s growth is restricted only to business. It is interesting to note that Pune, is on a hiring spree and has registered a three point increase in hiring.

Varun’s father David Dhawan has directed 17 movies starring Govinda and apparently Varun has closely been a part of each movie and is fond of him. he film ‘Sandook’ is set in the pre-independence era in a small Konkan village where a post office worker Ashtputre (Sumeet Raghavan) is living a typical lower middle class life with a beautiful wife (Bhargavi Chirmule) and a small schoolgoing son. Ashtputre is very anti-British and it often gets his goat that his forefathers who had achieved so many victories on the battlefield and that he is just a commoner. Therefore he wants to join the band of freedom fighters headed by the unknown Madhavrao. Inadvertently it so happens that a chest box belonging to the rich merchant of the village and whose palatial house has been usurped by the terrorising police officer (Brandon Hill) is given to

final training session in Kolkata is absolutely fine and also trained with other members. The Indian team will be concentrating on getting the bowling combination right. While Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh are almost certain to play, it will be upto Kohli and Team Director Ravi Shastri to decide on whether India will go with four or five bowlers. If they go with five bowlers, the tossup will be between speedster Varun Aaron and leg-spinner Karn Sharma.

India’s test match captain Virat Kohli, center, holds a soccer ball during a practice session ahead of their test cricket match against Bangladesh in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Monday. The only test match of the series that also includes three one-day matches begins Wednesday and (below) Harbhajan Singh gestures during a practice session ahead of their test match against Bangladesh.

IRPUR: The Indian cricket team got down to work soon after landing here today for the short series against Bangladesh, sweating it out in a gruelling two-hour net session at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The side led by Kohli arrived here by a morning flight from Kolkata and they hit the nets at the Stadium in the afternoon. The Indians will take on the hosts in a one off Test starting on Wednesday followed by a three-ODI series. "Since we arrived today and the boys wanted to practice, it was de-

cided to train at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium as Bangladesh were training at Fatullah. Tomorrow, we will be training at Fatullah," BCCI's administrative manager Biswarup Dey told PTI. Since Fatullah, which is in Narayanganj district takes about an hour and half to reach from Dhaka city, where the team is staying, it was decided to hit the straps rightaway. The team manager confirmed that all 14 members are fit and Wriddhiman Saha, who has sustained a hit on the chest during the

BANGLADESH CRICKET TEAM MANAGER RESIGNS DHAKA: Barely a day ahead of the one-off cricket Test against India starting Wednesday, Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud has resigned citing family reasons. A leading Bagladeshi daily, 'Prothom Aalo' quoted sources in Bangaldesh Cricket Board as saying that Mahmud has sent his resignation to BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury via email yesterday.

BANGLADESH UNLIKELY TO FIELD THREE PACERS IN TEST VS INDIA FATULLAH: Bangladesh bowling coach Heath Streak has said that the hosts are unlikely to field three seamers in the one-off cricket Test against India, starting here on Wednesday. "We are unlikely to go with a three-seam attack in this wicket," Streak said yesterday. "We are probably looking at two but it is up to the coach and selectors, once they have a better look at the wicket as we get closer to the game," he was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.

You can attract sponsors when you play India: Shakib

FATULLAH: Bangladesh's top allrounder Shakib Al Hasan feels that a series against India can always prove to be beneficial as playing the most glamorous outfit in cricket world helps the minnows grab eyeballs and attract sponsors if they do well. For Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim, it gives him "an extra motivation", while Tamim Iqbal more realistically wants to win atleast "one of the three ODI matches". Bangladesh's only representative in IPL, Shakib's view about what an India series means to the team were pretty matter-of-fact. "For me, an India series means that you can attract the attention of potential sponsors," Shakib was quoted as saying by Bangladesh's leading daily 'Prothom Aalo' ahead of the one -off Test match against India starting from Wednesday. For Mushfiqur, the series against India is a platform where they can prove that the recent 3-0 ODI series win against Pakistan was not a fluke. "For me, playing against India gives me extra motivation as the entire cricketing world will be watching the series with a lot of interest. When we beat Pakistan in the ODI series, critics said that it was not a quality team. So there is extra bit

England in search of one-day revival against New Zealand L

ONDON: England, not for the first time, will try to re-launch themselves as a one-day international cricket side when they face World Cup finalists New Zealand in the first of a five-match series at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Since they made the third of three losing World Cup final appearances back in 1992, England have struggled to keep up with changes in the 50over game. But this year's World Cup represented a new low, with England failing to beat a single Test nation in a tournament where they suffered a first-round exit after a defeat by Bangladesh. An antiquated approach, where 300 was regarded as a par score, was damned as "prehistoric" by Paul Collingwood, still the only Englishman to skipper the side to a global limited overs trophy -- the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean. It also played a key role in Peter Moores being sacked as England coach by incoming director of cricket Andrew Strauss and replaced by Australian Trevor Bayliss. For years now, England have tended to regard white-ball cricket as a necessary, money-spinning, evil with results in five-day Test matches all that matters. But in omitting the likes of senior pacemen James Anderson and Stuart Broad, as well as experienced batsman Ian Bell, for the New Zealand one-day series and including the

hard-hitting Alex Hales, Jos Buttler and Jason Roy, as well as leg-spinner Adil Rashid, England's squad -- still led by World Cup skipper Eoin Morgan -- has something of a fresh look about it. The 2019 World Cup will be staged in England, where pitch and overhead conditions sometimes mean that the huge scores achieved in the southern hemisphere are not always within reach. But Buttler, England's wicketkeeper at the World Cup and one of a new breed of fast-scoring batsmen, accepted the team's approach to 50over cricket had to change. "You have to be brutally honest and say we were getting it wrong," the 24-year-old told the Mail on Sunday. "We have to be looking at scores of 350 and upwards," added the Lancashire gloveman, who announced himself on the international stage with a thrilling 74-ball 121 against Sri Lanka in a one-dayer at Lord's last year. "That's the way the game is going. In a few years we'll look back at the (2015) World Cup and say it was a turning point in 50-over cricket." During their run to the World Cup final, where they lost to fellow co-hosts Australia, the Black Caps hammered England by eight wickets in Wellington. Tim Southee took a stunning seven for three as England were skittled out for just 123.

New Zealand then pulverised England's attack, skipper Brendon McCullum striking 77 off just 25 balls, a they raced to victory in a mere 12.2 overs. "We certainly played well that day. That's the way we want to play," said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson, who last week saw his side square a two-Test series with England at 1-1 after a dynamic 199-run win at Headingley. "Hopefully conditions allow that but if not, we've got to try to skin the cat a little differently." New Zealand certainly played in familiar fashion when thrashing Leicestershire by 198 runs in a oneday warm-up match on Saturday. Both Grant Elliott, who hit Dale Steyn for six to seal New Zealand's dramatic World Cup semi-final win over South Africa, and wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi made 106 not out against the Midlands county. Mitchell McClenaghan then took four for 31 and the left-arm seamer, fresh from winning the Twenty20 Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians, was eager for more limited overs success in England. "Winning the title in my first year playing the IPL was awesome," he told the Blackcaps' website. "I learnt a huge amount, and loved my time in India. "But it's also great to be back with the boys. I'm looking forward to the challenge over here, it's a massive series."

French Open Men's Singles champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland poses for a photo with his trophy in front of the Eiffel tower in Paris on Monday. Wawrinka defeated Serbia's Novak Djokovic in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in the men's final of the French Open at Roland Garros stadium in Paris.

Dilip Vengsarkar is all set to contest in the MCA elections. Kuruvilla, a former test fast bowler as their managing committee member, he too, resigned as the chairman of the umpires sub committee immediately after his appointment for the job. Many believe that the influx of politicians into the cricket administration is a cause of worry for the game simply because they neither have the time to attend the daily administrative work nor are they well versed with the game of cricket. Eventually, it is the affiliated units (voters) who will have to take cog-

nizance during the voting day. Also, the return of Dilip Vengsarkar who lost narrowly to Vilasrao Deshmukh for the President’s post in 2011 has decided to come back as an cricket administrator will be a boon especially after Mumbai's recent performances in the past two years. With his credentials backing him, he would certainly have the ability to take Mumbai cricket to different heights. He not only runs three cricket academies but has been working at the grass-root level since his re-

tirement 23 years ago. His coming into the administration will boost for the Bal Mahaddalkar group and more so for Mumbai cricket. Ravi Savant of the Bal Mahaddalkar group has decided to contest for Jt. Secretary’s post along with Dr. P.V. Shetty. They will be challenged by Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar of Patil group. The treasurer’s post will be contested by Nitin Dalal from Mahaddalkar group and he will be challenged by Mayank Khandwala from Patil’s group.

Oscar Pistorius to be released on parole on August 21 J

ohannesburg: South African athlete Oscar Pistorius will be released on parole on Aug. 21 after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence for culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, authorities said. The Olympic and Paralympic track star is behind bars in the capital, Pretoria, after being convicted in October after a seven-month trial.

The release of Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated when he was a baby, had been largely expected under South African sentencing guidelines that say nondangerous prisoners should spend only one-sixth of a custodial sentence behind bars. A prison service statement said Pistorius would spend the remainder of his time

under "correctional supervision", a form of house arrest. Steenkamp, a 29-year-old law graduate and model, died on Valentine's Day in 2013 when Pistorius shot her through a locked toilet door at his luxury Pretoria home. Prosecutors had pushed for a murder conviction, but the athlete maintained he fired in the mistaken belief an intruder was hiding behind

the door, a defence that struck home with many in a country with one of the world's highest rates of violent crime. The state won its bid to appeal the culpable homicide conviction and will seek a murder conviction when the case is heard in November. Pistorius could face a prison sentence of at least 15 years if convicted of murder.

TO END ROSBERG’S RESURGENCE MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2015

M

ONTREAL: Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton bounced back and increased his lead in the drivers world championship Sunday when he drove to a well-measured victory ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the Canadian Grand Prix. The two-time champion made the most of the 44th pole position of his career to lead from the lights to the chequered flag, finishing the 70 laps contest at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve 2.2 seconds clear of the 29-year-old German. His victory ended Rosberg's run of two wins and confirmed his own full recovery from the disappointment of the Mercedes pit-stop fiasco in Monaco, where Hamilton was deprived of a near-certain victory in the closing laps. It was Hamilton's fourth win in Canada, his fourth win this year and the 37th win of his career, lifting him 17 points clear of Rosberg in the title race with 151 points to the German's 134. "Did I need this (after Monaco)? Yes, I think I did," said Hamilton, adding: "I love Montreal, I love this track and love this city. And it really

Hulkenberg bags four points from Canadian GP

MONTREAL: Nico Hulkenberg earned four points for Sahara Force India by finishing eighth in the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix here. His Force India teammate finished Sergio Perez narrowly missed out on points, finishing 11th in the 70-lap race after starting 10th on the grid. Hulkenberg, starting seventh, could have finished higher than eighth but a contact with Sebastian Vettel while defending his position dented his chances of scoring more points. "It was not the most eventful race and I was by myself most of the time, except for the battle with Sebastian. In hindsight I probably

shouldn't have tried so hard to defend against Seb, but when you're a racer you just don't want to give up a position without a fight," said Hulkenberg. Talking more about the incident, the German said: "He took the outside line, I was on the inside, braking on the dirt and the marbles. I could see it coming but he didn't leave me anywhere to go so to avoid contact I kept braking, lost the rear and spun. Fortunately I was able to get going and didn't lose too much time." Force India are now seventh in the team standings with 21 points.

Pastor Maldonado who completed his first race of the season in seventh for Lotus. The race proved disastrous for McLaren with both their cars driven by Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button failing to finish. On a mild and dry afternoon Hamilton oozed confidence and revelled in the pre-race 'Hollywood' buildup with screen stars Michael Douglas and Al Pacino in attendance. Before the start, he thanked his Mercedes team for "all the hard work this weekend putting the car back together again," a reference to his crash in Friday's rain. Knowing Mercedes had never won at this track and that pole position had led to victory only five times in the previous 14 races, Hamilton made light of all expectations and worries when the lights went out.

Farah’s medical records to be analyzed by UK Athletics L

ONDON: Mo Farah's medical data will be analyzed in an independent investigation ordered by the governing body of British athletics, in light of the doping claims against the double Olympic champion's American coach. Ed Warner, chairman of UK Athletics, said the investigation will look at "blood data, supplements data everything surrounding his medical treatment." "We need to make sure there's nothing else there we haven't seen, we're not aware of," Warner told BBC radio. In a story by ProPublica and the BBC published last week, long-distance running coach Alberto Salazar was accused of using doping practices for his athletes at the Nike Oregon Project. Farah, the world and Olympic 5,000 and 10,000meter champion, is Salazar's star athlete. Although there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Farah, he is concerned about the damage to his reputation and withdrew from the Diamond League event in Birmingham on Sunday so he could return to the United States and "seek answers to my questions." Salazar has denied any wrongdoing. "It may well be that the outcome of our own investigation says there's nothing untoward going on as far as we can uncover in any way, shape or form around British athletics and a British athlete," Warner said. "One of the possible outcomes of all of this is, even though and I'm sure that's probably going to be the case there's nothing untoward proven around Mo Farah and British Athletics, we might still recommend

to Mo and might still decide ourselves to suspend our relationship (with Salazar) because of the reputational damage that could be caused. It's going to take time, but not a lot of time, I hope. I would think weeks, not months." Salazar is an endurance consultant to UK Athletics. Salazar was accused by his former assistant, Steve Magness, of violating anti-doping rules and encouraging doping by one of his top runners, Galen Rupp. Rupp won the silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the London Olympics in 2012, finishing behind Farah. Rupp also denies any wrongdoing. Farah has said he will not break ties with Salazar as there is no clear evidence against the American. "If I was a close mate of Mo's and he was asking me personally not as the chairman of (UK) Athletics 'What do you think I should do?' I might have been inclined to say, 'Do you know what? The easiest thing for you to do right now is to suspend that relationship, take a breather, see how it all plays out, run the circuit in the summer in Europe, on to the world championship in Beijing, and see what transpires,'" Warner said.

Army training inspiring: Jeje and Jackichand B

ENGALURU: Indian footballers Jeje Lalpekhlua and Jackichand Singh said the army training which the players underwent here as a new concept in team building exercise has inspired and taught them a lesson to remain united while taking on the opponents. "It was unique for us. The sacrifices made by the Army inspired us," Jackichand told reporters here. "It was a wonderful experience. We saw our Jawans doing it with ease. That motivated us and we completed the 21-barrier course. We are well a big happy family," Jeje added. Indian footballers under-

went army training as a new concept in team building exercise as the part of preparations for the 2018 World Cup Preliminary Joint Qualification match against Oman on June 11. The training exercise took place at the Army Service Corps Centre here where the Indian players were put through obstacle courses consisting of 21 different barriers and also team building recreational games. Talking about the tough battle ahead, Jackichand said it will be a very difficult match against Oman, but the team was ready. "It will be a very difficult match. But we are ready. It

has been an eventful year for me and I aim to carry on the momentum," he said. Jackichand also said that head Coach Stephen Constantine has set specific responsibilities on the players and they will give their best on the field. "We are training very hard. The coach has set up specific responsibilities and we need to stick to it. We will give our best on the field," he said. Jeje said though there were big names in Oman squad, the home players were ready to execute coach Stephen Constantine's instructions. "Yeah, there are big names in the Oman squad and they may be experienced,” Jeje said.
