hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday hit back at the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) opposition over the issue of five per cent reservation quota for minority community arguing that they did not have any concrete issue. Speaking to new spersons at the pre-session customary tea party at Sahyadri state guest house which the opposition parties boycotted, he reminded that the Ordinance brought out by the previous government had lapsed. Turning the tables on the opposition he stated that the government would table the report on the Wakf Board land grabbing scam which took place in the previous government regime in the month long budget session. Replying to queries he said that the government has sought the legal opinion of the Advocate General on the issue. Fadnavis stated that there are Supreme Court verdicts as well as High Court rulings which were conflicting and hence was waiting for the HC ruling on the issue. He added that the opposition was also forgetting that both the government and opposition had in the last winter session had agreed to have a debate on the Kelkar committee report on regional development backlog. Taking on the opposition further he said that the government got back the 800 mmq of water allocated to Maharashtra from the Damanganga river basin. He added that the previous Congress-NCP government in 2010 had relinquished the claim over the waters which his government won back. He said that the government will make the correspondence of the previous government public. Commenting upon the controversial Mumbai 2034 Development Plan (DP), Fadnavis clarified that not just the Shiv Sena, but also the BJP had some reservations about the plan. He clarified that the government was committed towards protecting the green and open spaces of Mum-

The Chief Minister further stated that claims and objections from the people will be invited on the DP prepared by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). After scrutiny from the civic body it will come up for approval of the state government. Replying to queries over the scholarships for backward classes, he said that the government has set up a task force to check bogus students availing more than one scholarship. Fadnavis stated that the government will take criminal action against such colleges. On the
issue compensation to drought affected farmers, he said that the government was not only paying compensation to farmers for this year, but also the stalled compensation which was announced by the previous Congress-NCP government. Replying to queries over the proposed Metro III route, he clarified that the government was committed to ensuring that no Marathi Manoos is displaced on account of the proposed Metro route. In all the government plans to introduce 15 bills in this budget session that includes the 'Right To Services' bill.
he Budget session of the state legislature which is starting from today is all set to be a stormy one as the Opposition has decided to target the Shiv Sena-BJP government for its failure on issues like drought, untimely rains and deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar will present the budget in the Assembly on March 18. The Opposition Congress and NCP are in up in arms over various sensitive issues. Prime issues like decision to scrap Muslim reservation in education and jobs, ban on cow-bullock slaughter, law and order situation, killing of communist leader Govind Pansare, agriculture crisis due to drought and hailstorm and lack of financial aid to sugar industry are likely to come up for discussion which will rock both the Houses. While boycotting the Chief Minister’s customary tea party on the eve of the session, the opposition Congress-NCP decided to take on the Devendra Fadnavis government. Significantly, Congress-NCP are
trying to project a united front during the session in spite of being divided over various subjects. Speaking to reporters, the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “The state government has miserably failed on all the fronts. The government is busy in making announcements but no action is seen anywhere. The rain affected farmers are yet to get any relief or monetary aid. The entire farming community is reeling under severe crisis but the government has not taken any cognizance. We will raise these issues in the House”. On the other hand for the Chief Minister, the immediate priority is to tackle the growing fissures within the ruling alliance. The Sena has adopted aggressive stance on many issues and made an attempt to corner the BJP. The recent coordination committee meting could not soften Sena’s anti BJP stance on issues like land reforms. The Shiv Sena has also threatened to launch an agitation against the nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in Konkan region. Against this backdrop it will be a litmus test for Devendra Fadnavis.

World Women’s Day
DOES a woman get anything special on a Women's Day? When the sun rises in the morning, can a woman look forward to a different kind of day? Do her families treat her better? She is supposed to become the focus of all things. One would like to think the red carpet would be rolled out for her. Some meetings are held for some women
and men get a chance to display their oratorial skills. But a woman does not get any extra attention. She does not see any change. The rapists, for instance, roam about as usual; in many homes -- in traditional quarters, the woman has to slog as usual. It is said that some 60 per cent of men beat their wives. Do
they at least stop beating the women on Women's Day? By the way, who are the guys that fix those special days? Is it the UN which does it? And what is to be noted is that the poor man does not get a special day. There is nothing like a World Men's Day. Does he not deserve to have one? If you study the situation a little deeper, you will see that a man's day is there every day. Every day is Man's Day. He does not wait for anyone to give it to him. He just

takes it. And he allows just one measly day for women -- World Women's Day. And during the rest of the year, he remains Lord and Master.
UK plans rape classes for 11 year olds
CHILDREN from the age of 11 in Britain are to be taught about the difference between rape and consensual sex amid concerns that teenagers are coming under unprecedented pressure to have intercourse at an early age. The classes will begin this year and will teach children how to recognise and respond to sexual pressure, coercion and manipulative techniques, including lying, 'The Sunday Times' reported. In an article for the newspaper to mark International Women's Day, UK education secretary Nicky Morgan writes, "We have to face the fact that many pressures girls face today were unimaginable to my generation and it's our duty to ensure that our daughters leave school able to navigate the challenges and choices they'll face in adulthood." One of the techniques that could be employed is "conscience alley", a gathering originally devised to help actors come to terms with their characters, but soon to be used in English schools to teach children about the dangers and dilemmas of consenting to sexual intercourse. It is all part of a new government attempt to encourage discussion of difficult subjects such as rape,
coercion and at what point teenagers are capable of agreeing to sex. These so-called consent classes may be taught in English schools soon after the Easter school holidays, after concerns that teenagers are coming under unprecedented pressure to have intercourse at an early age. Parents, teachers and government officials are also increasingly concerned about the prevalence of porn and sexting in children's lives.
Tata JLR to build first electric car in Austria
TATA Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is set to build its first all-electric car in Austria. The luxury car-maker's Jaguar brand could begin production of the vehicle next year. JLR's electric debut would be the latest in a string of launches after its new XE "Baby Jag" and F-Pace sports utility vehicle, as well as a new factory in China and one under construction in Brazil. The company is believed to be devising plans for a small production line in Austria, making about 10,000 cars a year, by leasing space in an existing factory, according to The Sunday Times. The Tata Group, had paid US $2.3 billion in 2008 to buy JLR from Ford and has more than doubled the workforce to 32,000. The company now sells almost halfa-million cars. The firm is also exploring plans for a factory in America.

Real Test for Fadnavis
Devendra Fadnavis
T
he winter session last December was relatively comfortable for the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led government. Back then it was not clear as to who the real opposition was. Subsequently a rather haughty Shiv Sena after much persuasion joined the Fadnavis government. Yet it still leaves the odd couple, the Congress in the Legislative Assembly and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the Legislative Council as the opposition parties. Even if the opposition ap-
pears like an odd couple, the issues before the government for the Budget session that begins from today are more than handful. Why we say this is the Real Test for the Fadnavis government is that four months have already passed since it took oath (excluding the Sena) and the impression still lingers that the government is still trying to find its feet. It now will have to give answers to some tough questions on the murder of Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Govind Pansare, the damage caused by the unseasonal rains, prevailing drought conditions in the state, the spread of Swine flu, the 2034 Development Plan for Mumbai, the proposed Metro car shed in Aarey Milk Colony and the Nightlife proposal for Mumbai and Pune. Besides that the Congress is already gunning for the state government's decision to do away with the reservation for the minority community. And now with the government banning cow slaughter in the state by reviving its almost two decade old pet legislation has only added more to the opposition palette. Not to speak of the Irrigation minister Girish Mahajan's remarks on pursuing cases of alleged corruption against his departments engineers. However, the Congress will be weary of its estranged ally the NCP given its recent bonhomie with the ruling BJP. However, the Real Test for the Govind Pansare
SIMHASAN Prashant Hamine | ADC Fadnavis government will be the budget itself. Given the dire straits that the economy is in, the declining industrialisation, power crisis and stagnant infrastructure growth. Besides this the government has to decide on Goods and Services Tax (GST), Local Body Tax and above all the vexed issue of Toll tax. Minister for Finance Sudhir Mungantiwar has been inviting feedback from the people and the industry on his first maiden budget. With drought and unseasonal rains lashing the state of late, Mungantiwar has his task cut out. The NCP ideally would want to have its own Chairman of the Legislative Council given its current numerical superiority in the upper house. The buzz is that it might press for a No Confidence motion against the Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh, who belongs to the Congress. It would be an ideal situ-
Sudhir Mungantiwar ation for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to exploit to the hilt. But then it too has its problems with the Sena which has adopted a rather intransigent attitude and often contradictory stand against the government of which it is now an integral part. The Congress and NCP opposition members took potshots at some of the novice first time ministers of the BJP. Even now most of them are still moving about like Alice in Wonderland. Add to that the Sena Ministers of State are unhappy over what they feel lack of administrative and executive powers. This year happens to be the year of civic elections all over the state and the shadow of the civic elections is not only cast on the session, but also on the budget itself.
DR CYRES ANSWERS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LATEST AUTOMATED LASER CATALYS CATARACT SYSTEM AND HOW IT CAN HELP IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS. This is the fastest laser system of its kind and can liquefy the cataract in less than 45 seconds. Furthermore it has the highest level of safety. Dr Cyres has just been awarded as “Leading eye surgeon of India at the hands of Smt Smriti Irani, Union Minister. Dr Cyres, What is this new cataract removal system? This new system breaks up and liquefies the cataract without actually entering the eye at all. All we have to do then is enter the eye through 1millimetre suck out the contents which have been liquefied by the laser and inject in a lens and the procedure is over. This entire procedure is as short as 45 seconds. Dr Cyres, why is this called Bladeless and Pianless laser surgery ? CATALYS is PAINLESS as nothing touches
the eye and only light is used. The entry into the eye is also made by painless laser. No metal blades are used anymore. As laser is used we can decide also at which angle to enter the eye. Naturally a laser makes a more precise incision than a metal balde operated by hand. Dr Cyres, I am highly diabetic can I have my cataract surgery done on this incredible new system? Catalys is ideal for you as
Yes. This is ideal for you. In the older system we had to cut the eye so that bleeding was a possibility. Now we program the laser so it only works where there are no blood vessels .This means total safety. Dr Cyres, I my aunty is 90 years old and has a extremely black and hard cataract. Will this system work on such hard cataracts. Many senior doctors have told me that removing her hard cataract by phaco may burn her eye. She is nearly totally blind .Please help..
3.Healing is much faster as incision are smaller.
Catalys is ideal for these cases. Before this system, it could take a lot of phaco energy to remove hard cataracts. This could burn the cornea. Now with Catalys the hardest cataract can be removed using 100 times less energy. Naturally with this system the vision recovers much faster . Howsoever hard the cataract it takes just 30 seconds.
Dr Cyres I have high BP and am on blood thinners. My cardiologist has advised me not to stop the blood thinners. Can I use this latest system on my eyes?
For further information contact 9819850971 / 9967439039 Email : info@cyreseye.com
1.No blade cuts the eye 2.Super accurate system ensures laser works only on cataract and not on any other part of the eye.

HUGE DELAY IN CONSTRUCTION OF MUCH-NEEDED MUSLIM CEMETERY IN RAFIQUE NAGAR, GOVANDI

RTI reply reveals dispute in cemetery land between BMC and MOEF By Tariq Khan
T
hough they are densely populated, areas like Shivaji Nagar, Bainganwadi and other peripheral areas where majority of the population are of the Muslim community (Sunni sect), the community experiences difficulties in burying their dead as there is only one Muslim Cemetery in Deonar. This cemetery is overloaded to such an extent that when the dead bodies are brought for burial they are buried at the same spot where previous dead bodies have not even decomposed properly. This poses risk to health of the people whilst also hurting their religious sentiments. The lone ceme-
Civic officials with representatives of Rafique Nagar residents in a meeting tery is unable to bear the load of around seven to eight lakh Muslim population living in the adjoining areas. Because of the pressing needs of the community, in 2012, BMC proposed to construct a new cemetery (for both Sunni and Shia sects) at Rafiqe Nagar in Govandi at an estimated cost of around 8 crore. Since then many politicians including area MP, MLA and corporators inaugurated the construction work which however never took off. But, politicians took advantage of the situation by putting up hoardings in-
forming gullible and mostly illiterate populace of the area and took credit for the proposed Muslim cemetery at Rafique Nagar. “Since 2002 there were several proposals to construct the cemetery, but since the last 13 years the cemetery work never began,” complains Iqbal Qureshi, President Jamat ul Quresh BS Association. When advocate S.M. Shoaib, secretary of an NGO Alert Citizen Movement (ACM) filed an RTI application on the status of the proposed cemetery he found that there exists a dispute between Collectorate (Mumbai
Suburban) and the BMC regarding ownership of the land of proposed Rafique Nagar Muslim cemetery and a litigation vide appeal No.397/12 (filed by MCGM) was pending for hearing before the Additional Commissioner, Kokan Division. “To resume the development work of Rafique Nagar cemetery, necessary clearance from the office of Collector (Mumbai Suburban) is required. Till the judgment of the appeal comes or NOC is given by MOEF Department of Government of Maharashtra the work cannot began,” lamented Shoaib. Accordingly, ACM officials met Mohd. Hussain, the Minority Commission Chairman of Government of Maharashtra and submitted him a memorandum and urged him to take up the case with state Chief Minister and the concerned government and civic departments. Hussain promised that he will personally request the CM to look into the matter and he will also write letters to Suburban Collector and the Municipal ward officer to
expedite the matter regarding the construction of the much needed Rafique Nagar cemetery. ADC spoke to Kiran Dighavkar, the ward officer of M-East ward of BMC, who said, “Actually the land belongs to BMC. But Collector’s department got interested in the land and hence claimed ownership. BMC had no option but to approach the Aditional Commissioner to solve the dispute. The land was a creek initially and hence when we dig it up sludge comes out. Therefore there is a need to fill it with red soil before starting the construction of cemetery. If we receive NOC from the MOEF, at least we can begin the work.” ACM (NGO) president Asif Jogle informed ADC saying, “We are not concerned with the dispute between two government agencies. Whoever gets the land, if a cemetery is built it will be for the common good of the populace. Hence MOEF should issue NOC to BMC so that it can start the construction work of the much required cemetery.”

A
fter the exit of touts from Regional Transport Offices (RTO), the staff is now facing a huge backlog with regard to issuing licenses, renewal of licenses, etc. The main reason behind this is lack of sufficient staff at all RTOs. All over Maharashtra, there are only 3,000 personnel employed there. On an average, the department receives more than 1,000 applications and consequently is in no position to finish the work. However, their officers continue to struggle to get the work done. Sources there reveal that they are severely short-staffed to deal with 1,000 applications. ADC visited the Wadala RTO and found that the third floor where maximum number of work is being done is totally congested to the extent that there is absolutely no place to stand. The only way a female can walk in the lane is when an officer pushes the crowd
aside. ADC, interacted with the crowd present there. Autorickshaw driver Shaikh Mohammed (44), said, “I had come along with a friend who is applying for a license and he has got an appointment after four months now. Why does the government not employ more people? I think touts were important since now the RTO looks like it has come to a complete standstill.” A student Sneha Sharma said, “I am seeking to apply for the learners license. The minute I entered the RTO, there is no place to stand due to over-crowding. I came here twice and it is impossible to even stand here.” B.I. Ajri, regional gransport officer of the eastern region said, “There has been a backlog. Pancholi held for thrashing club attendant, released on bail

T
he Santacruz police on Sunday arrested Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi for allegedly assaulting and abusing a bouncer of a night club at a five-star hotel in Juhu. However, he was later released on bail by the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court. Police say the 50-year-old actor allegedly smashed the head of a bouncer Mandar Patole (29) with his mobile handset while he was being escorted out after he created a ruckus and damaged the counter at the pub in the wee hours on Sunday. The actor along with a friend reached the Trilogy pub in Hotel Sea Princess on Juhu Tara Road late night on Saturday. At about 12.45 am, an allegedly inebriated Pancholi requested the disc jockey (DJ) to play Hindi songs as, according to him, only English numbers were being played in the pub. When the DJ turned down his request, Pancholi had a tiff with him. The senior police inspector of Santacruz police station Padmakar Chavan said. ''When the bouncers intervened and asked him to leave the place, the actor unleashed a torrent of abuses and began roughing them up. When a bouncer Patole
Actor Aditya Pancholi gestures to mediapersons after coming out from a court on Sunday. tried to escort Pancholi out of the premises for creating trouble, the actor lost his cool and banged his mobile handset on his head, causing him serious injury. Subsequently, the police were notified who took Pancholi into their custody. Patole was rushed to a nearby civic-run Bhabha hospital where he had to undergo five stitches on the head, on account of his injuries. Pancholi was taken to the police sta-
tion and placed under arrest in the wee hours under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). Even after all this, there was more drama inside the Bandra court when Pancholi was brought in at around 12.30 pm, so he could be sent for judicial custody till March
20. However, Pancholi immediately applied for bail and was released on bail of Rs 50,000. The court also directed him to surrender his mobile phone. Police say Pancholi did not show any remorse for his actions and was even making fun of lawyers and policemen in the court. He reportedly even teased one lawyer saying, ''Yeh baal mujhe de de Thakur''. The aggrieved lawyer has threatened that if Pancholi does not apologize to him, he will file a complaint against the actor at the Nirmal Nagar police station. It might be recollected here that this is not the first time Pancholi has run foul of the law. He had previously been booked for thrashing his neighbours in 2013 and also had heated arguments with media persons on a number of occasions. Also, in June 2013, Pancholi's son Suraj had been booked by the Juhu police on charges of allegedly abetting the suicide of Bollywood actress Nafisa alias Jiah Khan. Suraj was arrested in the case and later granted bail.

Dotted with illegal banners, few callers on MBMC helpline Just 4 complaints in 3 months on 24x7 helpline which operates only during working hours By Suresh Golani
W
hile the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) claims to have taken steps to curb the illegal banner menace, but thanks to their own apathy towards awareness initiatives, the civic helpline number launched three months back has received just four complaints in all. Following directives from the Bombay High Court in response to a Public Interest Litigation, a so-called 24x7 helpline 1800-224-859 was launched in December, 2014 by the MBMC. Interestingly the MBMC pays Rs.4,108 as monthly charges to the service provider for the helpline which is monitored only on
working office hours by the telephone operator in the main administrative building. Apart from the helpline number, ward-level citizen committees have been setup with appointment of nodal officers for curbing illegal hoardings. However thanks to the pass-the-buck attitude between the advertising department and the ward office, hundreds of banners continue to deface twin-city’s skyline. Taking a serious note of the brazen illegalities especially in the Mira Bhayandar region where even government properties are not spared by the banner mafia, the judiciary has directed ward officers and in-charge of local police station’s to remain present before the High Court on the next hearing scheduled on March 12. It has become a trend for political workers to install hoardings of their leaders on festive occasions, birthdays or appointment tonkey posts in their parties.

t looks like Kashmir’s chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has decided to make his coalition partner know what his policies and perceptions are with regard to the future of the state. He is not hiding anything: He is open about it all. He says Separatists are good folks: What if they are pro-Pakistan? What if they carry on silent anti-India activity? Who was responsible for last week’s anti-India rally in the valley? Who were behind it? It could only be those who are pro-Pakistan. It could be those who are silently working for Pakistan charge that Separatists are paid agents of Pakistan which appears to be true. The previous government held the Separatists in check. Those who responded to violence among them were detained. All that has now changed. They are getting sympathy and support from the government. A beginning in this regard has already been made. Separatist M. Alam who was responsible for the violence in Kashmir last time has been released. The BJP has objected that the terrorist shold not be ignored. Evidently Mufti does not bother about the reactions of its coalition partner. From what has happened so far, we can see the shape of things to come. Pakistan must be quite happy about the developments in Kashmir. Why should one carry out firing and violate the ceasefire line? What is strange is that the BJP partner of Muft’s government is not bothered: Decisions are being taken without them being consulted. Mufti is playing a game. It would not be desirable that there should be some more anti-India rallies and pro-Pakistan initiatives in Kashmir.

HEY are all the same. So, we should not be surprised at the death of dissent in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Ordinary people weary of the ways of politicians are always ready to trust a new player. The greatest thing in favour of the AAP was its newness. Soon that too will vanish, as AAP indulges in the usual skullduggery politicians resort to in order to remain relevant. Arvind Kejriwal is proving to be the big daddy of all politicians, beating them all at their own game. The cold-blooded eviction of Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav from the AAP’s top councils will only formalize what has been the de facto position in the party all along: AAP actually standing for ‘Arvind Alone Party’. Everyone in AAP must play a courtier if he wants to stay relevant. Bhushan, a Supreme Court lawyer known for espousing unpopular causes, defying, occasionally, even conventional notions of nationalism, is too self-respecting to kowtow to Kejriwal. Yadav was the AAP ideologue whose razorsharp arguments left Kejriwal seething with anger since he found it hard to counter him on an ideological and ethical plane. So, what better way than to throw out the duo which refused to play second fiddle to him. The hatchet men in the AAP National Council who bask in the reflected glory of Kejriwal did what he wanted them to do, even as the puppeteer himself calculatedly stayed away. They got rid of Bhushan and Yadav because the duo asked inconvenient questions and wanted to enforce ethical standards, transparency and accountability in a party which had already become a oneman outfit answerable to Kejriwal, and Kejriwal alone. This was only to be expected. Indians have always rushed to embrace anyone promising to cleanse the system, anyone offering a new dawn. Indira Gandhi, V. P Singh, Rajiv Gandhi et al were supposed to be the harbingers of change, new politics, clean politics. You know how the same Indians felt cheated by those false apostles of normative politics. Since we were always skeptical of these faux crusaders, we could anticipate each and every move of Kejriwal. From the way he left government without wanting to pay his dues of some Rs.8 lakh, to the way he transported Anna Hazare from Ralegaon Siddhi to the Ramlila Maidan, just so he could himself become the anti-corruption messiah, to the way he enlisted the support of the Congress for government formation, his lust for a large house, well, we can go on and on to prove our case that behind that simple exterior lies a very scheming, very manipulative man. Ironically, it was the RSS-BJP support to the anti-corruption platform in 2011 which helped Kejriwal don the colours of a crusader in the first place. How devilishly Machiavellian Kejriwal is can be gauged from the way he had isolated Swami Agnivesh during the Anna Hazare fast at the Ramlila Maidan. He got one of his factotums to secretly record on cell phone camera as the saffron-robed Swami exchanged notes with then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal. Within minutes, the sting-film was released to the media and Agnivesh painted as an informer. This time, in order to isolate Yadav, he had one of his aides record a telephonic conversation with a reporter who in her naivety suggested that Yadav had spoken to a group

of journalists about the internal goings-on in AAP. After such downright deviousness it is hard to see how Bhushan and Yadav could have even contemplated working with Kejriwal. After all, you do not expect your own colleagues to target you with their cloakand-dagger operations. Quite clearly, voters everywhere behave the same, falling for the freebies and false propaganda. The brand new ruling party in Greece, Syria, which overwhelmed the old, established parties to win power in January’s national polls, is now hard put to deliver on its promise of free water and electricity to the poor. Also, it is engaged in reneging on its election-winning commitment to abandon the European Union rather than enforce stiff austerity measures mandated by it in order for Greece to be able to repay the $ 340 billion
INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor debt. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is now looking for a face-saver to stay in the Euro Zone and is agreeable to enforce the austerity programme if some leeway is given by Germany and other lenders. Simple-minded Greeks who catapulted him to power believing that would end their misery from a bad economy and rampant joblessness are already beginning to cry betrayal. Back in Delhi, after announcing that the electoral promise of half-rate power and free water would soon be implemented, what the AAP failed to tell the voters is that the bill for this largesse is NOT being paid by the power distribution companies. No. The honest tax payers would have to pick the tab, though during the campaign it was suggested that the power distribution companies would have to reduce the tariff. On the contrary, the power utilities are actually demanding a hike in tariff. So, the current subsidy for water and power of Rs.1,700 crore could rise further to the detriment of the overall budget of the Delhi Government. But do you think Kejriwal cares? No. Voters are always gullible. They get cheated every time.
A white elephant of a university
O
NE does not want to be harsh to a Nobel laureate, especially when India has so few that you can count them on the finger tips of one hand. Suffice it to say that only Amartya Sen would have espied some qualities in Gopa Sabharwal, a little known reader in a Delhi University college, to handpick her as the vice-chancellor of the Nalanda University. Sen, the Chancellor of the university aimed at reviving the ancient glory of the
country as a seat of great learning and as the true home of Buddhism, had his way so long as his friend Manmohan Singh was Prime Minister. Even though it was the line ministry, accountable for the proposed budget of Rs.2,700 crore for Nalanda, the Ministry of External Affairs could hardly get its way because Sen had the ears of the PM. And with the change of guard in Delhi last May, when it was clear that the Modi government would not extend his services beyond the present term due to end this coming June, Sen raised fuss about university autonomy and illiberal character of the BJP government. And the usual suspects in the media who wear their liberal badge on their chest pockets gave our lovely old Sen, the Nobel laureate, much play in the television channels and newspapers. But as a letter writer in a business daily said, Sen seemed to have discovered the phenomenon of government interference in academic matters rather late — only when he found that his term at Nalanda was not to be extended. “ …When Jyoti Basu’s Communist government in West Bengal went on interfering in all the academic matters for decades and ruined the Calcutta University and Presidency College, Sen did not speak up…” Be that as it may, let us enlist here an extraordinary achievement of Sen’s pick for Nalanda’s vice-chancellorship. Some years ago, when the Liberhan Commission was inquiring into the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya, Gopa Sabharwal appeared before the commission posing as her sister, the London-based Gauri Advani. The former High Court judge had somehow got an inkling that the person claiming to be Gauri was actually her Delhi-based twin sister who was then teaching at a Delhi university college. So, when Gopa impersonating as Gauri appeared before Commissioner Liberhan, he summoned his staff, asked the doors to be shut and threatened to book her for impersonation and other criminal offences. Well, to cut a long story short, Gopa broke down, begged for forgiveness and left the Commission virtually in tears. Now, that her benefactor’s term as Chancellor is due to end in June, we can trust that Gopa too will soon be out of Nalanda. She treated the assignment like a gravy train, claiming over Rs.2 lakh in rent alone for staying put in Delhi while Nalanda was supposed to come up in the backwaters of Bihar. What for Nalanda, a tax-free salary of US $80,000 plus lot of perks would have been impossible for a mere reader in a Delhi University college.

After the BJP-Sena government in Maharashtra got the assent of President Pranab Mukherjee for the 19-year-old Bill banning cow slaughter in the state, Twitter went... well, a-twitter. One of them, a takeoff on a TV ad featuring actor Priyanka Chopra for Scooty for women, read: “In Maharashtra, all chicken, goats and sheep are currently asking, why do gais (cows) have all the fun.” Yes, indeed.

M.S. Dhoni and his blue brigade deserve all applause for reaching the quarter-finals of the cricket World Cup Down Under with relative ease winning four games in as many matches when other big teams are struggling and battling to make the knockout stage of the tournament. What a turnaround for Team India as this same team was struggling to save games on their last tour in Australia which concluded before the World Cup. This goes to prove that our boys are big game players and a world championship tournament has brought the best out of their kitty and our boys are on course to retain the cup. Conditions in Australia are conducive to medium pacers and our team with a good batting line-up are always going to be favourites to win with some luck and hard work from our boys. Dhoni and his men have thrashed some good teams like South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies on their way to the QF and one hopes our team has not peaked too early too soon. The knockout stage would be tough and even a single bad game and loss would mean an exit from the tournament. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

Cong’s a Muslim stooge THE Congress often taunts the BJP as being a stooge and political arm
sleeves. Success seems to have instilled arrogance in him. BCCI instead of denying and trying to save him must chastise him and ensure discipline in the team. Such outbursts and shows of temper during World Cup can take the focus away from the game and can do incalculable damage to Team India. Virat must grow up and learn to take criticism in his stride rather than picking up journalists to vent his ire. Scribes are dong their duty by reporting the incidents and not trying to malign him. Virat should concentrate on the game and should be known for what he does on the cricket ground rather than what he does outside the stadium. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai

BEING a freelance journalist for the last 30 yearsm it is very sad to read of the demise of well-known and senior journalist Vinod Mehta, the former editor-in-chief of 'Outlook' and other magazines. Vinod Mehta, a journalist par excellence was to the point on any topic and was always the guiding force for young writers like me with his vast knowledge. These "leaders" cried themselves hoarse in Parliament and on television over the BBC documentary on the Nirbhaya rapist, conveniently ignoring the reality that a sizeable number of them share roughly the same views expressed by the rapist, although few have the courage to express them openly. Their argument is that the BBC documentary shows India in a poor light. Well then, in what light does this sickening mob lynching episode - already broadcast on CNN and BBC - show the country. It portrays us as a nation of barbarians. Where is the outrage now? All we can expect from our politicians are the usual disgraceful platitudes like "the law will take its own course" and promises to "bring the culprits to justice." THE molestation of a 30-year-old woman doctor at Mumbai’s oldest and reputed Nanavati Hospital in the scanning room by a helper of the hospital as per a story appearing in a leading paper, has come as a rude shock. It is bewildering that there was no female attendants in the scanning room when a woman is taken in for scanning. Sorry to point out that such repeated incidents of molestations, rape of women be it in hospitals, hotels, in vehicles goes to prove that women are taken for granted and
are a public property. Even foreign women tourists who come to India are not spared. They are either molested, raped or robbed off their belongings while on the way to their destination. This is despite the fact that Mumbai’s Police Commissioner has issued strict orders to his department to be alert, vigil and track down such molesters. It is also surprising that the woman doctor after taking the molester to the police station has let him go scot free though the hospital authorities have suspended him. He must be given stringent punishment otherwise who knows this man might as well find other places to do such acts again. — K.V. Raman Malad

ringing with him a rare combination of wit and irreverence, 'Lucknow Boy' Vinod Mehta left his indelible imprint as feisty editor of several successful publications in a career spanning over four decades in which he also shone as a best-selling author and an influential TV commentator. Known for his candour, 73-yearold Mehta, who breathed his last at AIIMS on Sunday, never shied from taking on the high and mighty and giving space to the contrarian voices like that of Booker awardee Arundhati Roy, writes PTI. It was his refreshingly free of pomposity approach that lent a distinct flavour to the publications he edited beginning from Debonair, from where he started his career as an editor, to Outlook, of which he was the founder editor. He rendered literary heft to the monthly men's magazine Debonair, better known for its titilating photographs and racy reads, by doing a series of investigative and serious stories. His success, he recalled in his memoir Lucknow Boy, led him to "serious journalism", his first love, and he founded India’s first weekly newspaper, The Sunday Observer. From there he went on to edit The Indian Post and The Independent in what was then Bombay. Mehta then moved to Delhi in the early 1990s, when he became Editor-in-Chief of The Pioneer, but his
OBITUARY / VINOD MEHTA 17-year helmsmanship of Outlook magazine was his longest tenure. The versatile writer had also written well-acclaimed biographies of film actress Meena Kumari and Congress leader and Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi, which was relaunched recently. Criticised by right-wing voices for his liberal values and denunciation of their at times extremist agenda, Mehta mocked himself as a "pseudo-secular" and wrote about abusive mails he would receive in Outlook, which called him "proSonia, pro-Congress, pro-stray dogs, anti-BJP, anti-Hindutva etc, etc." He may have his prejudices, he wrote, but he balanced with his pro-
fessionalism. "In other words, the basics of my trade impose a discipline which ensures that instinctive or acquired biases are tempered with the simple and clear rules of the profession... Still, I wouldn't claim I am a 100 per cent unbiased editor!," he wrote. As someone who often made fun of "big egos" of many journalists, it was not without reason that he named his dog 'Editor'. A host of political leaders and other prominent personalities, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi and BJP veteran L K Advani attended the last rites of Mehta yesterday evening. The last rites took place at Lodhi Road crematorium with his elder brother Major Gen (retd) Ashok Mehta lighting the funeral pyre. Besides Gandhi and Advani, those who attended the last rites included Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and CPI leader D Raja. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death. "Frank & direct in his opinions, Vinod Mehta will be remembered as a fine journalist & writer. Condolences to his family on his demise," Modi tweeted. He was suffering from severe lung infection and was on life support. He died of multiple organ failure.

Mrs Fadnavis gave a warm handshake to the babies, who were treated by the hospital, to show her support. Dr Armida Fernandez explained the significance of a human milk bank and how it will benefit the needy, saying “These banks will help in giving breast milk for those babies who can't get it from their mothers because they might be sick or are not healthy enough to breastfeed them. More ever, since healthy mothers, after proper testing, provide their milk to us for free, we will also give this milk to those in need free of cost.” Dr Fernandez also highlighted the storage capacity of such banks. “It depends upon how much milk the mothers give us. If we take the example of a similar bank in Sion, then we can help 300 to 400 babies annually,” Dr Fernandez explained. Mrs Fadnavis also shared her personal experience about breastfeeding, saying “I am proud that I myself have breast-fed my children for the first two and half years of their lives. Senior citizen’s Bandra murder solved in 24 hours Auto driver's son and colleague held for killing, robbing senior citizen By Zuber Ansari
T
he Bandra Police within 24 hours solved the 78 year-old senior citizen murder cum robbery case with the arrest of two accused including the son of a trusted auto driver who used to daily ferry the senior citizen. In the process they recovered all the valuables of the senior citizen. The prime accused in the case is the son of auto driver. He had worked for six months with the family but was removed from the job when the Kapadia family learnt he was trying to to cultivate a friendship with one of the girls in the society. Both the accused had made a plan to rob the couple, as they were well aware about their daily activities and routine. The accused have been identified as Kamlesh Narayan Jadhav (20) and Jay Tanaji Navrang (21) (Son of Auto driver). Both were jobless and committed the crime to make a quick buck. The deceased, Darayus Erich Kapadia who resided with his wife Mrs Kapadia on the ground floor, in Bai Jeevanbhai building, Parsi colony, Bandra (west). They have one daughter who is 50 years old who resides at Hill Road separately. Darayus' wife Lilly used to daily visit her daughter's flat at Hill Road. The daughter is unmarried and lives alone, and has a catering business. Mrs Lilly Kapadia was an ex supervisor of a private firm. She used to visit her daughter every day, on occasions some times twice or three times a day. After visiting her daughter in the morning, she used to come back in the afternoon and again in the evening. On Saturday night, when she came back home from her daughter's place, she asked the driver to help her take all the stuff she was carrying to home. At the door, she rang the bell but got no response.
Using another set of keys, she then opened the door and after going inside she asked the driver to look up her husband but the driver after having a look at him said he is sleeping and kept all the stuff and left. Mrs Kapadia then went to see her husband and found him lying in a pool of blood. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone IX (Additional Charge) Vinayak Deshmuk, "The accused were hiding in the kitchen and when they saw the lady in the bedroom before her husband, they tied her hands and legs and blindfolded her eyes and asked for cash. While Kamal was the one who came before the lady, Jayesh stood back so that Mrs Kapadia don't see him and recognize him." After both the accused left the flat after committing the murder and the robbery, Mrs Kapadia somehow to free herself from the binds, and later informed the auto driver who used daily sleep below her building, and with the his help informed the Bandra police. Cash amounting to Rs 7.50 lakh, 20 grams gold and a mobile was stolen which was recovered later. After the incident, Bandra Police come to know, the Kapadia family had seven servants and four fixed auto rickshaw driver. These rickshaw drivers would ferry her from her home to her daughter's place and then back home. Cops interrogated all the servants and auto drivers and their family members. Pottery, jewellery, apparels, shoes, leather bags, belts and jackets et al, are all manufactured in the by-lanes of Asia's largest slum. All small entrepreneurs, mostly unorganised, but collectively doing businesses that runs into thousands of crores per year are mostly suppliers to major wholesalers who pay them a pittance for products that are sold at multiple time its costs in the retail markets. But now that seems to be changing as ecommerce portals have realised the potential and variety of offerings that spout out of this area and are rushing to exploit it. Snapdeal has taken the first bite and soon others will follow changing the fortunes of these businesses forever...
Local artisans and SMBs of Dharavi to be on-boarded as sellers on Snapdeal
Snapdeal.com, amongst the giants in the online marketplace has launched a wide range of products manufactured at Dharavi on its site. The company has tied up with DharaviMarket.com to provide a nationwide reach to local artisans and small and medium sized businesses of Dharavi. This is in line with Snapdeal’s vision to create 1 million successful entrepreneurs within the next three years and empower thousands of artisans and small businesses to sell nationally while supplying locally. As part of this initiative, Snapdeal will on-board Dharavi artisans and SMBs and create an exclusive store for them called ‘Dharavi – Snapdeal store’. It will not only provide complete assistance with regards to online cataloguing of products but also help refine the product offerings through its analytics based market insights. Through this association, DharaviMarket.com will be able to scale up its business; and the craftsmen/ artisans under the DharaviMarket will be able to access a national audience by listing their products on Snapdeal.com. haravi once characterised as a notorious slum settlement, has also been a hub of many activities... be its portrayal in the Oscar winning movie by Danny Boyle which fetched the region its share of slum tourism or the ambitious, but debauched project of cluster redevelopment by the state government. This time, it is in news again for striking a deal with one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the country. Snapdeal.com, India’s largest online marketplace has tied up with DharaviMarket.com to provide a nationwide reach to local artisans and small and medium sized businesses of Dharavi. The company will create an exclusive store for them called ‘Dharavi – Snapdeal store’. The store will offer a variety of products ranging from Fashion Accessories, Luggage and Men’s Clothing. Currently there are over 300 products listed on the site which include Dharavi’s signature products such as Pottery Jewellery, Apparels, Shoes, leather bags, belts and jackets. DharaviMarket.com is a 'for profit' initiative aimed at making the skills of the squatter settlement more accessible to the consumer while providing the local, skilled craftsmen and artisans direct access to local and global markets. It aims at providing, world class, quality goods at cheap prices as one would directly buy from the manufacturers while giving the craftsmen a price worth their craft and effort. Behind this news, there is a larger and much significant story is at play, orchestrated by a 29 year old journalist-turned-urbanologist and now Founder of DharaviMarket.com, Megha Gupta. This story is important on many counts... as it involves the
biggest and perhaps most celebrated slum of India-Dharavi. Secondly, the development has a potential to create history or a success model which could be replicated at other places with similar stipulations and will be quoted as a success story by the B-schools of India and world. Thirdly, Gupta represents the ethos of young India which dreams of bringing social change not just by offering lip service, but going out there and doing it. Gupta, in her previous avatar -before she became an urbanologist- was a journalist with the aim of bringing social change Continued on pg 14 »

through her writings, soon to discover to her chagrin that she was just rushing from one assignment to another trying to meet deadlines...without actually making a difference to the society she set out to make. The infrastructure beat that she covered, in the infrastructure starved city like Mumbai, got her hooked and she decided to pursue an MA in Town and Regional Planning at University of Sheffield, UK. In 2008, after finishing her course she came back, planning to change the face of the city she calls home. But there were no urban planning jobs. Urban planning was considered to be the domain of architects and not a social subject. She started assisting urban planners of the city in the areas of research for public infrastructure projects and affordable housing. The following years she worked with many urban planners in social spaces like URBZ and Asia Initiative. URBZ, a platform for experimental action-research on urban development hired her services by granting her a project to research transport and commuting patterns of Dharavi residents for six months (later it was extended to three years). During these six months Gupta got deeply involved with every aspect of Dharavi and its residents, be it their pathetic living condition, daily issues of community or the manufacturing activities. She decided to do something about the local artists and craftsmen and help them to come together by providing them a platform to sell their wares in a better market with better price. And as the saying goes ...everybody collaborated for the good cause ...social media, people and organizations she had worked with like Asia Initiative, gave a helping hand. “One upload on my Facebook account got instant replies and interest and thereafter it just snowballed into setting up this initiative called DharaviMarket.com,” says Megha Gupta. Actress and Social Activist Shabana Azmi also got associated with the project. The hurdles like artists not having computers to upload images was solved by the technology called smart phones. “Everybody did not have computers, but they had smart phones. We taught them to click photos and upload them on the site, help them create catalog of their goods for better display,” adds Gupta. The initiative was launched in August 2014. Within six months around
200 artists and craftsmen registered themselves with Gupta. The registration is free. She plans to take the number to 500 within one year. Like any other business story... We ask her about the volume of business that will be generated and the revenue that will be earned especially post Snapdeal scenario...in the answer we get a long sigh ...with Gupta telling us matter of fact... “I am very new to all this ...just trying to make sense about the business side of it,” she says. “Cataloging each product of each artist is a very tedious process, plus logistics of sending the order, acquiring orders and fulfilling them, everything seems to be an uphill task at the moment,” says Gupta . “At times I even have to fund the cost of raw material for the craftsmen to get the order completed on time. Even deaths and illness in their families needs the financial support at times,” she says. Gupta uses government courier services which she finds dependable and economical for logistics. Though the beginning is humble -a staff of five including Gupta at present - the grit is very much there. Behind the pain there is much to gain ...the artists registered with them are able to make around Rs 20,000-30,000 per month. After Snapdeal, similar companies like Flipkart, Amazon and others are making a beeline. The goods showcased on the site on the very first day were sold out in no time. “We have taken a first step in the right direction and showed the world that people from places like Dharavi can also sell online,” says a very proud Gupta. Creating awareness about the platform is the next step for which Gupta will be targeting festivals like Holi, Ganpati Janmashtami and id which is celebrated with much fervor in the area. “We ultimately are aiming at making living and working condition for Dharavi and its craftsmen and artists better... plus creating a brand for them in the global arena,” adds Gupta. “This initiative is great example of how technology and business can come together to change lives of millions of artisans in our country. It is my hope that Dharavi craftsmen will get their due recognition through this online store” says Shabana Azmi, award winning Actor and Social Activist. Meaning everybody will gain. The producers, the consumer and ofcourse the e-tailers...

he Union Budget 2015-16 aims to reduce litigation on tax matters through various measures like introducing Dispute Resolution Bill, raising the threshold limit for the applicability of domestic transfer pricing laws and defining the word ‘substantial’ in the case of indirect transfers. Also, the Budget has other progressive features like legislative framework for black money, huge investment for infrastructure, abolition of wealth tax, reduction of royalty fees and various tax benefits for individual assesses to promote savings”, said Firoze A. Andhyarujina, Senior Advocate, High Court Mumbai in his opening remarks as the moderator of the meeting on ‘Implications of the Budget 2015-16’ jointly organized by MVIRDC World Trade Centre and All India Association of Industries. Raising concern about the magnitude of tax litigation in India, Andhyarujina mentioned that currently 3 lakh cases are pending in the High Court with the government being the largest litigator. Alarmingly, the government has lost 72 per cent of the cases in the High Court. More importantly, Rs. 436,000 crore is locked on tax litigation. In this context, the Budget has made an attempt to simplify tax laws while making it transparent and eliminating ambiguity, he said. He also welcomed other decisions of the Finance Minister like doing away with the introduction of the Direct Tax Code (DTC), deferral of GAAR, reduction of royalty fees and abolition of wealth tax. He said the abolition of wealth tax is a sensible move because the cost of collection (which amounts to Rs. 1009 crore)
exceeds the tax proceeds. However, Nishith Desai, Founder, Nishith Desai Associates critically viewed the budget by saying that some of its provisions could raise the number of tax litigations. Specifically, he said the amendment to the definition of ‘place of effective management’ (POEM) may give more discretion to tax officers as the new definition is ambiguous. This may lead to increasing litigations on tax residency of establishments. He was also critical of the government’s move to levy 10 per cent withholding tax on the income of Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) based out of India, a step which he termed as intellectual dishonesty. Further, he remarked that the Budget should be more transparent by disclosing the amount of deposits held by the income tax department against pending tax litigations. He termed this amount of deposits as hidden liability of the Government of India since it needs to be refunded with interest to the assesses in case the government loses the case. He also called for proportionality in the penalty for tax offences. He concluded that the government must improve drafting of laws to bring about clarity and certainty. Dadi B. Engineer, Senior Partner, Crawford Bayley & Co. feels that the indirect tax proposals in the Budget will give rise to inflationary pressure in the economy. Specifically, the hike in excise duties, service tax and the 2 per cent cess (Swacch Bharat) on certain services may raise inflation. Jairaj Purandare, Founder Chairman, JMP Advisors Pvt Ltd, remarked that the Budget was a growth oriented one, balancing various objectives like fiscal discipline
and inclusive growth. While agreeing with Engineer on the inflationary consequences of the Budget, Purandare said that the new agreement between the government and the RBI on inflation targeting framework would address this issue. He also agreed that the change in definition of ‘POEM’ could lead to rise in litigation and therefore he hoped clarification from the government on this matter. Purandare listed out budgetary proposals related to the development of the financial sector namely, setting up of a Bank Board Bureau, allocation for recapitalization of PSU Banks, gold monetization scheme, rationalization of MAT for FIIs etc. Deepak Agarwal, Senior Manager, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt Ltd touched upon some of the indirect tax proposals and concluded that some of the provisions in the Budget were favourable for assesses. Specifically, the extension of time limit for CENVAT credit and rationalization of penalty provision in indirect taxes are favourable for assesses, he pointed out. Earlier in his welcome address, Vijay Kalantri, Vice Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre and President, All India Association of Industries said that the Railway and Union Budgets had the vision to boost the manufacturing sector and the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which will give rise to inflationary growth. The progressive features in the Budget along with RBI’s reduction in policy rate by 25 basis points would enhance growth prospects in the economy. The steady decline in inflation and the poor growth in the 8 core infrastructure sectors (for the month of January) prompted RBI to reduce the policy rate.

ne-two-three punch, but still the US Dollar managed to gain ground against the Indian Rupee. First, it was a visionary Railway Budget, followed by a marginally positive Union budget and then finally the “cherry on top” from the RBI, reducing key policy rates by another 25 bps to 7.50% on the Repo. However, the pop in the Rupee towards 61.70 was shortlived, as it closed the week around 62.20 levels, onshore and around 62.80 levels, offshore. Over the past many months, we have been advising to reduce the shorts in the US Dollar, on dips below 62.00, as we see the pair forming a formidable base between 61.00/61.50 regions on spot. The central bank has shown good bit of appetite to defend the US Dollar on decline. Over the month of March, Indian Rupee will be largely driven by trend in the global risk assets. Indian economic data will be watched for cues, but there is not much of cheer in the macro outlook in India. Indian government has laid the medium to long term plan to improve the productive capacity of the nation and improve the ease of doing business, which are all great news for long term. However, for short to medium term, between 12-18

months, Indian economy has to grapple with an economic slowdown, hostile opposition parties and stress in the financial institutions. Over the last 18 months, we have seen a dramatic reduction in the list of headwinds. A sharp fall in consumption and investment, coupled with much lower fiscal deficit has led a significant contraction in the current account balance. One of the engines of growth, the rural sector has come under stress lately. The drivers of rural demand, the wealth augmenting forces as well income augmenting forces, are on a reverse trajectory. Rural Indian has immensely benefitted from the inflation cycle of 2004-2013. A sharp year on year rise in commodity prices, backed by ever increasing government expenditure on minimum support prices for agricultural crops, along with higher spend on NREGA, farm loan waiver and various other social sector schemes have boosted rural income. At the same time a multi-year super cycle in metals and minerals had also augmented income of the people associated with that sector. Over the last month or so a number of domestic oriented companies, from the non-financial ones have reported dismal earnings and many of them have blamed rural demand as a major cause of the weak earnings. At the same time, financial sector companies have also reported a jump in stressed assets, which is no surprise, as NPAs rise with a lag. In the meantime, urban economy has not been able to pick up the slack in rural demand, as weak job growth and income buoyancy prevents demand from picking up significantly. Many have argued that fall in hard assets should improve the disposable income of Indians, both corporate as well as individuals, but we would not
be surprised if bulk of that increase goes into augmenting savings, then augmenting consumption. During times of economic uncertainty, which is there globally, higher disposable income caused by lower cost of goods and services bought, lands up more into savings than into consumption. Indian needs to broaden its tax base, where only 3/5% of its households pay income taxes. A mix of small government and bigger private sector is the need of the day. Global environment remains quite challenging and could remain so over the medium term. Hence, for us to achieve an economic escape velocity we have to make hard trade-offs, which many a times can come at the expense of political popularity. This government has the time and the mandate to make those risky trade-offs. Global economic data flow over the last one week have been quite mixed.
Chinese PMI, both services as well as manufacturing, were a tad above expectation, but larger trend for the Chinese economy remains downhill. In fact Chinese Yuan has continued to weaken steadily as foreign currency outflow increased. Euro zone has had more positive surprises in its economic data; with sentiment mapping surveys like PMI showing improved expectation in manufacturing but slightly weaker reading in services. A weaker Euro and upcoming QE from ECB have made businesses in the Euro zone quite hopeful. In UK, though manufacturing PMI was a downer but services and construction PMI picked up. In US, economic data was mixed too. On one hand, ISM manufacturing PMI and factory orders were weaker than consensus but on the other hand, headline ISM services PMI and nonfarm employment report were quite stronger than consensus. However, we
are little confused with conflicting trends in the data of other employment surveys like Gallop and Challenger and NFP. According to the establishment survey done by BLS under NFP, the oil and gas sector had shed around 2,900 jobs over the first two months of 2015, but challenger survey seems to suggest a probable job loss of closer to 40,000. It is no surprise that a severe pain is being felt by the global energy and commodity producers. Therefore, we can expect more negative multiplier effect from the commodity bust into the US and the global economy. At the same time, the wage growth remains weak and should keep the Fed away from any hike in interest rates, any time soon. A stronger US Dollar is not only deflationary for the US economy but also a drag on the US corporate earnings. However, at the same time, a stronger Dollar provides a boost to the real disposable income of US consumers, but as long as the economic uncertainty remains, a larger pie of that higher disposable income could get saved, and not spent. Over the next week, we remain of the view that the decline in the US Dollar remains limited as 61.00/62.00 is a zone of significant dollar demand. We would expect exporters to step into hedging between 63.50/64.00 levels on spot. As a result, the larger range of 61.00 and 64.00 remains in play, with most of the trading confined between 62.00 and 63.50 levels on spot. Euro is expected to face selling on rise and hence 70/72.00 remains a lucrative selling zone. At the same time, on GBP, we expect a range of 90.00/92.00 and 95.00/96.00 on spot. As far as Yen goes, we can see a range of 50.00/51.00 and 52.50/53.00 on spot.

Project Delays, Deviations And Other Customer Woes ANUJ PURI Chairman & Country Head, JLL India

eams of newsprint have been dedicated to discussing the sufferings of consumers in the Indian real estate sector. Particularly, home buyers’ woes related to late delivery of projects, deviation of housing projects from promised quality, additional payments due to change in apartment area and inadequate protection of their rights have been welldocumented. The question that invariably arises is whether the developer is at fault, or whether larger market forces beyond the control of developers are at play.
Construction Delays – By Developer Or By Approval Authority? Technically speaking, the time consumed in obtaining all approvals adds to the total time expended in completing the project. Any approval which is needed between the launch to the actual start of construction up till handover of the apartments to the buyer will be an additional time factor. Delays here will cause cascading delays in delivering the project as per the promised time. Before a project is officially launched in the market and offered to buyers, there are myriad approvals that a developer needs to obtain from the state and central agencies and ministries. In any business, the longer raw material is held, the higher is the holding cost – which, in addition to interest costs in case of borrowed funds, causes an increase in the overall price of the finished product. This analogy, when extrapolated to the real estate sector, considers land as the basic raw material for real estate development, with construction materials being the variable costs. The longer a developer has to hold his land without getting any receipts through the sale of proposed apartments, the higher his project costs escalate. This can, in fact, be a very costly proposition all around. In the current scenario, obtaining the 57-odd permissions to begin construction of a project can take as much as two years. During this time, the cost of acquisition or even just holding the land for a project rises. Builders already have to cover external and internal development charges, license costs and often charges for change of land use from various departments, which have also risen. Cost of construction has gone up by more than 50%, as well. However, this is only one side of the picture. Many developers intentionally undertake a slower pace of construction if sales in their project are sluggish or a
larger part of the project is unsold. They may have diverted a sizeable chunk of the revenue generated from pre-launch sales to another project, or utilized it to pay off a pressing bank debt. At other times, the authorities can be blamed for not granting timely projects approvals.
Project Quality And Deviations A major concern has been the difference in the promised quality and actual delivery status of the apartment, which remains a concern for real estate buyers. A change in the apartment area after buying from the developer can occur if a change in project plan is necessitated due to a design or approval issue. A deviation of up to 10% is usually acceptable – for a higher deviation, a customer must definitely seek legal recourse. That said, project deviations can also happen because of structural deficiencies of the overall system, wherein rules are being made by the governing authorities in a reactive manner rather than on a proactive basis. There are readily recallable examples of how abrupt changes in regulations governing real estate development can work against both developers and buyers. The revisions made in the DCR regulations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region a couple of years ago caught the industry unawares, and added to development costs by about 15%. This included the fungible premium payable if the builder opted to take the additional 35% FSI option. These cumulatively accounted for a 20% hike in construction cost. This move has led to an increased pressure on the developers’ margin - which, in turn, resulted in price increases across most projects in MMR. The fact that developers had to re-work their project specifications (upcoming as well as on-going unapproved projects) resulted in significant project delays. The result was an exacerbation of the cashcrunch on developers, and an outcry from their buyers. This is not to say that developers do not tamper with overall project quality or make arbitrary changes in their project designs with a clear intent to maximize profit. By pinching off space from designated open spaces, children’s play areas, compound perimeters and guest parking areas in an originally approved plan, an unscrupulous developer can make a limited plot yield

more saleable space.
Recourse For Consumers Regardless of what causes delays or abrupt changes in project blueprints, consumers must be able to get justice. Many examples of customers obtaining favourable decisions upon approaching consumer courts exist, and the power of these forums should not be under-estimated. However, the larger and less wholesome truth is that the current legal dispensation is ill-equipped and under-regulated to offer complete consumers protection in matters related to real estate. The Real Estate Regulation and Development Bill - long languishing on the policy drawing board and still under consideration by the government – was intended to offer vastly enhanced protection to buyers. However, after the most recent revisions to RERA, it seems that it will in fact now be less protective towards buyers. While the bill aimed at providing an alternate redressal mechanism, the new provisions are talking of no recourse to other consumer forums. This can, in fact, lead to pressure on this regulatory body in terms of an increased log of cases, though it will reduce instances of multiplicity of suits. Consumers should be aware that a certain degree of due diligence and awareness about their rights can protect them against unscrupulous practices by developers. In the first place, due attention should be paid at the time of drafting the sale agreement. A property buyer should fully understand the contents, if necessary with the help of a lawyer, and make a clear note of what the developer has agreed to deliver. Developer’s sales team will usually present a buyer with a readymade agreement format, and a buyer must ensure that this captures every relevant detail. If it does not, the buyer is fully entitled to ask for missing details to be included, and potential grey areas to be clarified. A copy of the final agreement must be retained under any circumstances, as this will serve as the primary evidence in a legal action filed for agreement violations.

ndia is a country that is buzzing with ideas of young entrepreneurs. A successful business story, an idea that changed a life and courageous struggle to succeed against all odds are stories that seem to be told everywhere. However, for every person who succeeds in a small scale business venture and translates it into a successfully business model, there are several others who fail to make a headway due to lack of funds financial resources. A start-up finds it difficult show collateral or prove their creditworthiness against a loan and often find it difficult to procure finances. While we are yet to go a long way to make loans easily available for small scale ventures, fortunately the rigid system has started to change with more financial institutions forthcoming to encourage and help Small and Medium Enterprises. It is no doubt that the SME sector is going to be the focus sector going forward. In India, we have over 3 crore SMEs. While esti-
How do you pick your trades/ investments? Do you use technical analysis, or employ fundamental data? We select our investments based on fundamental analysis and the growth potential of a company. It involves detailed analysis as well as interaction with the company management and an effort to look into the future of any business. Of course, valuation has to be kept in mind. Technical helps more for short term trading and timing in the market and not necessarily in stock selection.
How would you describe your methodology? As mentioned earlier, our methodology is fundamental analysis, detailed look into the financials of each and every investment opportunity along with an eye on valuations. Of course, looking at industry growth, scalability of business models and management capabilities and track record are essential ingredients of this analysis.
What appeals to you about Investing? The short side or long side? We are in a growing economy. That means that in general the market will keep going up as long as the economy keeps growing. Only when the economy reaches a mature stage or a stage where its growth stops, will we have a scenario of negative returns in the market and opportunities on the short side. Having said that, there are intermediate phases in Indian market when it goes down. If not the market as a whole, some of the sectors do give negative returns thus offering a shorting opportunity. However, I am by nature an optimistic person and as a result generally look for long side investments. What gives you that edge? I don’t know if I have an edge. Still, if I were to answer this question, I would probably say: more than 2 decades of investing experience, an ability to patiently analyse oppor-
tunities and an attitude of letting go of risky opportunities even if that means sacrificing some returns.
Is there any applicable lesson to investing? There are many lessons and even then I don’t think there can be an exhaustive list of lessons. The Market is a dynamic phenomenon and teaches new things every day. The day one feels that he has mastered the science and art of investing – market immediately teaches by giving a jolt. Probably, none of the investors globally have 100% success rates though many have had good hit ratios.
How much of what you do is gut felt? Gut doesn’t come of any use, especially in the ininitial stages. You have to necessarily go through the rigour of financial analysis and valuation. Only if some opportunities are coming at par on these parameters, then you go by the gut although even in that there is an element of experience built in. If one were to go by gut, one could have invested in Hotels and Airlines which are very glamorous businesses, but sharp underperformers when it comes to returns to shareholders. Do you try to anticipate or follow market trends? We do try to anticipate economic numbers and their effect on the likely direction of the
market and resultant trends, if any. However, it is not easy and it is done on a best effort basis. What is more important is your ability to be agile and be quick in reviewing a set of market conditions.
When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide you're wrong? What do you do next? If the performance of a company is not in line with your expectation, that means either the assumptions and analysis were wrong or the investment thesis that was assumed has undergone some changes. In such cases, you revisit your investment and decide if it is worth holding on or averaging or should one book loss. It is a difficult and courageous decision, but one has to be very clear that one is investing in a stock to get financial returns and not to get emotionally associated with it.
Any positions you ever lost sleep over? Not necessarily losing sleep, but obviously there have been a lot of decisions which have not worked as expected; the most prominent of these are investments in PSUs. There has never been a secular trend of performance and returns from PSUs. Every time you invest based on certain assumptions, the government comes out and takes an action which is contrary to your expectations. What would make you wary about an
Making Small And Medium Enterprises Loans Easier BRIJESH PARNAMI CEO, Destimoney Advisors
« GUEST COLUMN mates may vary, it is accepted across all stakeholders that SME sector collectively contributes to over 45% of the industrial output in the country. Not just that, the sector
India needs to create a better ecosystem to nurture business growth
also contributes to 40% of exports and employs more than 6 crore people. Going further, it is estimated that SMEs create more than 13 lakh jobs every year. The number of quality products they produce have crossed 8000. In the next 3 years, nearly 1.2 crore people are expected to join the SME workforce in India. With such immense potential, it is incumbent on the SME ecosystem to fully support its growth. However as mentioned above, one of the major hurdles that SMEs face is related to inflow of credit. A large number of SMEs are still in their initial stages of growth and therefore are not able to show strong financials in their books. As a result, banks, NBFCs and other lenders are hesitant to
take exposures on the SMEs. They tread this bastion with enormous amount of caution. As a result only 1 out of 4 SMEs who apply for credit, actually manage to get it. For a sector that is showing such enormous potential for its own growth and growth for the economy, the stifling challenges of credit must be overcome sooner than later. Many lenders have become proactive to the financial needs of the SME. They have evolved and come out with innovative ways of assessing the credit worthiness of the SMEs. Instead of going by the traditional route of assessment of declared financials, they resort to studying the cash flow generation patterns of the SMEs and to establish through different workarounds, whether the
SMEs would be able to generate enough cash to be able to run their business, while also repaying their loans. These financiers understand the cashflows by an in depth study of the business model of the SMEs, interacting with their customers, interacting with their suppliers and other key constituents of their ecosystem. These methods have to some extent eased the pressure of credit squeeze on the SMEs. However, we still have a long way to go. There are two key things that must happen. One: More and more lenders should start looking at SMEs as a profitable opportunity for growing their lending business. The past experience has proved that the repayments from SMEs are reasonably satisfactory, in
Do you have a scenario about how the current bull market will end? Difficult to answer exactly in the way that you have asked, but historically, the market has given a benefit of doubt to any new government formation for about two and a half years. Post that period the actual economic and corporate performance starts to have a significantly higher impact than the expectations from the establishment. What makes a investor successful?
Your success mantra? Your ability to let go of the greed even at the expense of making lower returns is very important. Of course, a serious due diligence is a must. Any final words? It is very important to identify one’s risk profile and then accordingly make investments. One should not go by what others are doing and try to copy them. Also, Health and Wealth are the two most important assets in one’s life. So, it is better that one goes by professional advice when it comes to both these assets instead of trying to treat yourself. On the contrary, what has been observed is that we are too happy to take professional advice when it comes to lower valued assets such as the repair of our car or television or laptop or mobile but when it comes to health and wealth – we think that we know everything.
What is your take on the current market scenario, Indian as well as global? Globally, there is lot of uncertainty and the world has got divided into different zones which will have different performances. The Eurozone is witnessing a slowdown. Indian economy is likely to be in an uptrend and as a result, we should see and upward movement in the market though it can be filled with corrections. that as long as the cash flows are kept intact, the loan repayments do come in. Two: Look at other innovative ways of taking credit exposure on SMEs such as structuring secured loans against gold, property etc., with loan to value ratios a shade higher than normal. A carefully assessed loan application that is backed by strong cash flows and security is a bankable risk. There is adequate scope for lenders to start reviewing SME loans with a more open credit-framework. Not to mention, they could price it to match the risk that they perceive they are taking. SMEs would be willing to pay an interest rate of between 16% to 18% for a loan. There is no gainsaying the fact that out of all the segmental options available to lenders today, loans to SMEs stands prominently in the front. It is a win-win for the SMEs, for the lenders and also promises economic growth. It is upto the lenders now on whether they want to encash this.

Over the past three quarters, Yes Bank’s customer assets growth has picked up materially, asset mix has improved and share of savings and branch banking deposits has increased. These trends are manifestation of impressive execution on the strategy of accelerating growth and adding granularity to business. Substantial investment in branch network (has increased by 50% over past 24 months) has played a pivotal role here. Improvement in network productivity (widening distribution of retail asset/liability products), addition of new branches, recovery in corporate lending environment and benign wholesale funding rates are likely to drive a robust 27% CAGR in advances over FY14-17. Yes Bank is well capitalized (Tier-1 ratio at 11.8%) to pursue brisk growth. Revenue growth outlook is robust: NIM outlook for the bank is strong with bulk deposits rates heading south, persistent improvement in CASA ratio and expected increase in the share of retail (including MSME and business banking) loans which are better yielding and have longer duration. Growth in non-interest income has been robust driven by impressive traction in financial advisory, branch banking and transaction banking fees and this trend is likely to continue. Additionally, declining interest rate should drive substantial gains on the corporate bond portfolio for Yes Bank. Asset quality to remain solid; credit cost to decline: In the ongoing credit cycle, Yes Bank’s asset quality has remained steady. The current stock of Net NPLs and standard restructured assets stands at just 0.4% of advances and 2% of networth (much lower than most peers). While in current quarter the restructuring activity could increase (due to end of regulatory forbearance from FY16), medium term asset quality outlook remains sanguine given an improving macro. So the credit cost is expected to moderate. Valuation has room to re-rate further: A combination of high loan growth, NIM expansion and lower credit cost would drive a strong 26% earnings CAGR for Yes Bank over FY14-17. During the period, average RoA and RoE is estimated to be at impressive 1.7% and 21% respectively. Valuation is attractive at 2.3x FY17 P/ABV in the context of robust fundamentals and improving operating environment.
RELIGARE CALLS A ‘HOLD’ ON CAIRN INDIA CMP: Rs. 239
Target Rs. 270
In view of a ~45% decline (over H2FY15) in global crude oil prices, CAIR has more-than-halved its FY16 capex guidance from US$ 1.2bn to US$ 0.5bn. It has also undertaken measures to optimise opex and renegotiate contracts with service providers to limit costs. We think with this move, CAIR aims to shift focus to development (from exploration) and preserve free cash flows for a sustainable dividend payout. While reserve accretion and production could be hit, we restate HOLD on a likely revival in crude by FY16-end. Cuts FY16 capex guidance by 58%: In line with oil majors (IOCs and NOCs), CAIR has today pared its FY16 capex guidance to US$ 0.5bn (from US$ 1.2bn) in view the sharp decline in crude prices. The capex focus has also been shifted predominantly to core and growth projects (85%) from exploration (15%), in a deviation from FY15 when ~40% of the US$ 1.1bn capex was spent on exploration. Negative for production/reserve growth: Under the new exploration program (FY15-FY17), CAIR had targeted 3bn boe of incremental prospective resources leading to an RRR of 150% over this period. So far, 2.1bn boe has been drilled, of which 1.5bnboe has been established and rest is under evaluation. Lower exploration spends could severely hit the aspired RRR. FY16/FY17 EPS estimates pared: With a reduction in the capex/exploration spends, CAIR is unlikely to achieve its earlier guided production CAGR of 7-10% (FY15-FY17). We therefore trim our production growth estimates to ~5% CAGR from ~8% CAGR earlier, and accordingly our FY16/FY17 EPS estimates to Rs 35.3 (-14%)/Rs 35 (-9%). TP cut to Rs 270; maintain HOLD: With a lower capex likely leading to deferred/ lower reserve accretion and muted production growth, we cut our Mar’16 TP to Rs 270 (from Rs 290 earlier). We however maintain HOLD on the stock as we expect crude oil prices to bounce back to US$ 80-90/bbl by FY16-end.

fter the release of the film, Still Alice, that fetched Julianne Moore a richly deserved Oscar, there has been renewed interest in Lisa Genova’s debut novel. The book was first self-published in 2007, and sold by the author out of the trunk of her car, before it was picked up by Simon & Schuster and went on to become a bestseller.
G e n ov a is a neuroscientist herself, so her book about a woman who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease, is very detailed and informative. Alice Howland and her husband, John, both professors at Harvard, are in a happy and stable marriage. Their daughter Anna is a corporate lawyer trying to get pregnant; son Tom is in medical school and the youngest, Lydia, is an aspiring actress and the black sheep in the mind of her mother, who would rather she went to college and got a proper education. Alice is a popular professor and much in demand speaker; the first hint of trouble comes when in the midst of a lecture, she forgets a word. Then, while running on her usual route, she gets lost. She forgets to go to a conference where she was scheduled to speak. Believing that her increasing forgetfulness is a symptom of menopause, she goes to see her doctor and is put through tests that indicate Alzheimer’s Disease. She is just fifty, fit and healthy, so the first reaction is disbelief and then denial. There is no cure for this mental ailment, medication can just slow down the cognitive impairment caused by the disease, it cannot be halted. Alice’s decline is rapid and she is disturbed to note that her friends and colleagues start treating her like a pariah, because of their fear of mental illness. She can only rage against her misfortune—in a heart-breaking scene, she smashes dozens of eggs in frustration, as she cannot remember the recipe of the Christmas pudding she makes for her family every year. Alzheimer’s Disease is tough on the family and the caregivers too, as
Excerpt: Still Alice
SHE spotted her running shoes on the floor next to the back door. A run would make her feel better. That was what she needed. Ideally, she ran every day. For many years now, she treated running like eating or sleeping, as a vital daily necessity, and she’d been known to squeeze in a jog at midnight or in the middle of a blinding snowstorm. But she’d neglected this basic need over the last several months. She’d been so busy. As she laced her shoes, she told herself she hadn’t bothered bringing them with her to California because she’d known she wouldn’t have the time. In truth, she’d simply forgotten to pack them. When starting from her house on Poplar Street, she invariably followed the same route—down Massachusetts Avenue, through Harvard Square to Memorial Drive, along the Charles River to the Harvard Bridge over by MIT, and back—a little over five miles, a forty-five minute round trip. She had long been attracted to the idea of running in the Boston Marathon but each year decided that she realistically didn’t have the time to train for that kind of distance. Maybe some day she would. In excellent physical condition for a woman her age, she imagined running strong well into her sixties.
a lot of patience is required to deal with the patient’s memory loss and resultant mood swings and tantrums. It is rare in the ‘me-myself’ American society, but the Howland family rallies together, going so far as to vehemently oppose John’s decision to move to New York for the sake of career growth. While she still has moments of lucidity, Alice is able to repair her relationship with Lydia, who comes across as sympathetic and willing to make sacrifices to care for her mother. Early testing shows that Anna has inherited the mutated
Clustered pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks and intermittent negotiations with car traffic in street intersections littered the first part of her run down Massachusetts Avenue and through Harvard Square. It was crowded and ripe with anticipation at that time of day on a Saturday, with crowds forming and milling around on street corners waiting for walk signals, outside restaurants waiting for tables, in movie theater lines waiting for tickets, and in double-parked cars, waiting for an unlikely opening in a metered space. The first ten minutes of her run required a good deal of conscious external concentration to navigate through it all, but once she crossed Memorial Drive to the Charles River, she was free to run in full stride and completely in the zone. A comfortable and cloudless evening invited a lot of activity along the Charles, yet it felt less congested than the streets of Cambridge. Despite a steady stream of joggers, dogs and their owners, walkers, rollerbladers, cyclists, and women pushing babies in jogger strollers, like an experienced driver on a regularly traveled stretch of road, Alice only retained a vague sense for what went on around her now. As she ran along the river, she became mindful of nothing but the sounds of her Nikes hitting the pavement in syncopated rhythm with the pace of her breath. She didn’t replay her argument with Lydia. She didn’t acknowledge her growling stomach. She didn’t think about John. She just ran. As was her routine, she stopped running once she made it back to the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Park, a pocket of manicured lawns abutting Memorial Drive. Her head cleared, her body relaxed and rejuvenated, she began walking home. The JFK Park funneled into Harvard Square through a pleasant, bench-lined corridor between the Charles Hotel and the Kennedy School of Government. Through the corridor, she stood at the intersection of Eliot Street and Brattle, ready to cross, when a woman grabbed her forearm with startling force and said, “Have you thought about heaven today?” The woman fixed Alice with a penetrating, unwavering stare. She had long hair the color and texture of a teased Brillo pad and wore a hand-made placard hung over her chest that read AMERICA REPENT, TURN TO JESUS FROM SIN. There was always someone selling God in Harvard Square, but Alice had never been singled out so directly and intimately before. “Sorry,” said Alice, and, noticing a break in the flow of traffic, she escaped to the other side of the street. She wanted to continue walking but stood frozen instead. She didn’t know where she was. She looked back across the street. The Brillohaired woman pursued another sinner down the corridor. The corridor, the hotel, the stores, the illogically meandering streets. She knew she was in Harvard Square, but she didn’t know which way was home. She tried again, more specifically. The Harvard Hotel, Eastern Mountain Sports, Dickson Brothers Hardware, Mount Auburn Street. She knew all of these places—this square had been her stomping ground for over twenty-five years—but they somehow didn’t fit into a mental map that told her where she lived relative to them. A black and white circular “T” sign directly in front of her marked an entrance to the Red Line trains and buses underground, but there were four such entrances in Harvard Square, and she couldn’t piece together which one of the four this one was. Her heart began to race. She started sweating. She told herself that an accelerated heart rate and perspiration were part of an orchestrated and appropriate response to running. But standing still on the sidewalk, it felt like panic.
gene that causes the disease, but she goes ahead with her plans to start a family and is relieved that her kids are clear. The hope is that by the time her symptoms shows, medical science would have found a way to deal with it. Genova spares the reader the full impact of the trauma caused to Alice and her family, by ending the story before she is completely wrecked. In one of the novel’s highs, she addresses the Annual Dementia Care Conference. “Being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is like being branded with a scarlet A,” she says, “but I am not what I say or what I do
or what I remember. I am fundamentally more than that… Please don’t look at our scarlet A’s and write us off.” The book moves the reader by its compassion, though is a depressing read. Ultimately, the disease is such that there is no hope, only the slow stretching of the tragedy over a period of time, till the patient is reduced to a hollow shell, empty of life-affirming memory. MUMBAI | MONDAY, MARCH 9, 2015
On March 1st a very inspirational show began on Indian television, Colors channel's 'Balika Vadhu' is all set to welcome a brand new milestone which will further the show’s position as the epitome of social awareness on television. An 11-year leap will set the stage for history to repeat itself as Anandi’s young daughter finds herself bound by the chains that plagued Anandi’s own childhood, child marriage. Now, as the date for the change in fortunes nears and the gut-wrenching history takes Nimboli ’s life by storm, the channel reveals the face whose innocence and playfulness who will pull at the heartstrings of the nation much like Anandi had all those years back. We spoke to Rajeshwari Sachdev, whose character has recently been introduced in the show. A brief chat with her.

RAJESHWARI’S WIDOW ACT IN By Sandeep Hattangadi
What do you feel is the reason for the success of this path-breaking show? I believe that it’s always the story and the content of any show that is the backbone for its success and Balika Vadhu has a good story, good performances and good producers like Sujoy Wadhwa of Sphere Origin Films who are responsible for the success and I congratulate all of them.
What is this generation leap all about? Eleven-year-old Baroda resident, Gracy Goswami has been roped in to portray the role of young Nimboli whose childhood and future will be gripped by the perils of child marriage as she will grapple to understand the reason behind her lost childhood. To step into these nervous shoes that has the entire country waiting with bated breath, Gracy is currently in the process of shifting base to Mumbai along with her family who have been tutoring her about child marriage and what it entails. Anandi, whose infantile daughter was kidnapped from her and forced into the ritual of a Thaali marriage, however, remains unaware of her daughter’s plight. As she turns an activist to stand up for the rights of women, little does Anandi know that her young daughter, Nimboli is bound to an orthodox family where gender bias is the key to survival. Nimboli ’s name, too, bears witness to this discrimination as she is named after the bitter
fruit of a neem tree that is never celebrated and always ridiculed.
What is your role in the show? I play a young widow called Mangala who has to go through a lot of strife and she has to look after Anandi’s young daughter Nimboli who too has to face the ignominy of a child marriage. What made you accept a role like this? The novelty of playing a rather bold character prompted me to play this .
Have you shot with Gracy? Yes. She is a wonderful talented girl and very sweet and I had a happy time working with her.
What about films? I have recently acted in six regional films , notably ‘Sanhita’ directed by Sunil Sukhtankar and Sumitra Bhave and ‘Arambh’. Any other project on hand? Doing multiple shows is not my style of working. I like to concentrate only on one show at a time. What’s happening with your husband Varun? He is doing a good film. Can we see you in a reality show? I don’t like reality shows.

An Arvind Kejriwal-Anna Hazare Tie Up...
By Chauthi Duniya Reporter
C
RUSADER against corruption Anna Hazare came to Delhi after many days, held a dharna (a non-violent sit-in protest) at Jantar-Mantar and this dharna against the Land Acquisition Ordinance amplified the seriousness of the problem in the ears of people. It is true that it is not the duty of Anna alone that he should hold an andolan (agitation) for every problem. There are other people too in the country who can raise questions, can hold an andolan, and can join hands, but they don’t. Actually, in the context of the land acquisition issue, the biggest fault is that of the country’s farmers outfits. No talks are held between farmers groups and every farmers group wants to be the leading group in the country, with all the people working under its leadership. To work together – this is not the intent of any farmers outfit. To work under them – that is their intent. This is the reason that successive governments are continuing to make laws against farmers, each government is working against the interests of farmers, and are succeeding in breaking up farmers' groups.
Land Acquisition Ordinance Social activist Anna Hazare came to Delhi to get the Land Acquisition Ordinance against farmers nullified so that it doesn’t take the form of law, to draw the attention of the country to it. But the four main people who brought him to Delhi have no direct connection or relationship with farmers. P.V. Rajagopal is a well known social worker who works in Madhya Pradesh, who worked amongst landless tribals and whose first demand is that tribals in the jungles or the landless should get land along with the rights over it. He has no relationship with land

The second entity Magsaysay Award recipient, Rajendra Singh, who was till now working together with the Congress on the water problems in the country. He too has had no direct connection with the problems of farmers. The third person is K.N. Govindacharya, who is RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s inseparable friend and an advisor and who in the next few days, like Sanjay Joshi, can return to mainstream politics with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In fact, Sanjay Joshi and Govindacharya are such faces of the RSS who have great influence on workers and workers associated with the Sangh Parivar place a lot of faith in Govindacharya. While Govindacharya is certainly unhappy with the methodology of the Sangh Parivar and the methodology of the BJP, he does
BLESSED BY HIS MENTOR: Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal.
not consider it impractical. He wants improvements to be there in the Sangh and that this country should run according to the policies of the Sangh Parivar. These three people sitting with Anna Hazare, instead of the problems of farmers, underline some other problems. Why are farmers organisations not with Anna Hazare, that is indeed a question. And amongst the organisations (and their heads) which are there, most of them are such who, while doing other work also work among farmers, because without invoking the name of farmers their problems cannot be sorted out. Social activist Medha Patkar’s name is foremost amongst them. Founder member of Narmada Bachao Andolan, Patkar works basically to rehabilitate displaced people.
Changing strategy Nobody in the country has any doubt about the emotions linked with the ideology of these four people, nobody has any doubt about their integrity either. But despite this, the subject of support of these four people and for which they brought Anna to Delhi, that subject is fine for their leadership, but why did they not include in it farmers leaders in the country? Because large farmers organisations in the country say something else, the leaders collected in Delhi say something else. Anna's voice and tone was quite clear and was in favour of farmers. It is this contradiction that scares us. Anna also keeps changing his strategy from time to time, keeps changing the pace of his steps, keeps changing his direction too. He is a saintly person. He first said that no political person would come on his platform or dais and he would not share the platform or dais with anyone. Then he sat on the stage with politicians. Earlier, he kept Arvind Kejriwal away from himself, but as soon as Kejriwal gave him a signal, he was
eager to embrace him. I consider this an auspicious sign. Kejriwal is a genuinely political person and he is also identified with those issues which are raised by his mentor – Anna. If Anna and Kejriwal come together, then there will be a dawn of a new political movement in the country. Kejriwal does not like associating with other political parties who are fighting on questions related to the public and neither should he do so. Because as soon as Kejriwal takes those leaders along with him, he would be considered one of them. And if as of today, Kejriwal can get the support of Anna, then his political party can try to form an organisation in the country and can isolate such potential leaders in the country who want to challenge Narendra Modi. The first name amongst them is that of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. The Arvind Kejriwal-Anna Hazare pair can first of all push the likes of Nitish, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad Yadav to the periphery of the political scenario. The Congress, because of its own idiocy, is already searching for a corner to hide. Before the BJP came into the limelight, by taking Anna with himself, Kejriwal can lay claim to being the sole honest leader, and sensitive to the people. By reducing the rates of electricity and water, Kejriwal has conveyed to Delhi and to the country that if he takes a position, then he can try and use means and tools in favour of the people and can take decisions in favour of the people too. Anna has much to decide on, because this is a country of trusting people and the trust of people keeps getting broken. Therefore, it is Anna's personal responsibility that if he has held Arvind's hand, then by raising political, non-political questions he should neither separate Kejriwal from himself nor distance him, but instead, by lending support to Kejriwal, should start the process of touring the country.
DILLI KA BABU Looking east
China obviously looms large on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy agenda. Modi hosted Chinese president Xi Jinping in September last year and is now preparing for his visit to the country in May. Meanwhile his in-house specialist National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has been busy shuttling between Dilli and Beijing holding talks with Chinese officials on, among other things, the contentious border issue. Now, reportedly, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has created a new and separate China desk, which will function directly under Doval’s supervision. It will be headed by a Joint Director level spook. The news came as a surprise to some since information gathering about China is usually the turf of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). But RAW seems to have been “turfed”, for now. Apparently the move was on the cards ever since Modi sarkar came to power. Until now, China was clubbed along with other nations in the Indian intelligence establishment, though former IB chief S.A. Ibrahim, did have a hand in pushing the idea of a separate desk for China.
CM fights corruption
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has a surprise weapon in his anticorruption drive. It’s WhatsApp, the popular cellphone app for messaging and sharing videos. Addressing officials on the occasion of the annual IAS Week, Yadav stunned the audience of babus by claiming that he had a video of a senior babu accepting a bribe. Though he didn’t name the alleged offender, Yadav did say that he had stored the video on his WhatsApp and even shown the video to the State Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan. While Yadav did not expound further on the issue, it clearly left the babus rattled. Clearly, Yadav wants to up the ante against corrupt babus in his administration, with an eye on the 2017 assembly elections. Both babus and those who follow babu affairs are now trying to determine the identity of the alleged culprit caught on video in the CM’s possession. Yadav too did not elaborate what action he or his Chief Secretary have taken against the “guilty”.
Whistleblower blues
Whistleblower Indian Forest Service officer of Haryana cadre, Sanjeev Chaturvedi, has been shunted around by various regimes – first in Haryana, his cadre State, by the then Congress Government and then by Modi sarkar which removed him from the Chief Vigilance Officer of AIIMS, a move which kicked off a political storm. Now it seems the officer may have actually found someone who wants to keep him. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has reportedly sought Chaturvedi’s services to head Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch. Sources say that Kejriwal has written to Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar to release Chaturvedi from his present duties and send him to Delhi. But it won’t be easy, observers say, since Chaturvedi needs clearance also from the Health Ministry (his previous posting) and the Central Vigilance Commission, and given Modi sarkar’s attitude towards the babu that may be easier said than done.

Advani hopes to quickly adjust to fast tables M
umbai: National champion Pankaj Advani is hoping to quickly adjust to the Star tables that will be utilised during the 2nd edition of the Indian Open Snooker World Ranking Tournament to be played at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Mumbai from March 10 to 14. The 29-year-old Advani pointed out that these tables are completely different as compared to the ones on which the Nationals and other major tournaments are organised in the country. “The Star tables, which are used on the professional tour, are very quick and we have to get used to playing on these tables,” mentioned Advani, who further stated that since the past two
weeks he has been preparing for the event. “I had a hit at the tables this afternoon and hope that in the next two days we get used to the tables. The surface is very fast and sensitive and you have to play with a soft touch because the cue ball tends to skid a lot. Getting used to the tables is paramount as we will be able to know our limitations and decide exactly what shots are possible,” said Advani, who is a multiple World Champion in both billiards and snooker. The Bengaluru-based Advani, who had reached the semi-finals last year in New Delhi and lost to compatriot Aditya Mehta, belives that he has the experience of doing well.

hen I entered the club I found a small gathering at one corner. Curious I approached & found that our expert was sermonizing his coterie. He was used to blowing his own trumpets but this day he suddenly said “I am going to tell you a fine dummy play made by our friend Mr. Badhir”. Everybody was shocked. The expert praising Mr.Badhir! Although they played in the same club there was no love lost between them. The expert had suffered from the unpredictable performance of Mr. Badhir many times and often prophesized that one day he would murder Mr. Badhir and that would be justifiable murder. Why was he suddenly praising his staunch adversary? A few players inquired about his health. One even went so far as to touch his forehead, but the expert assured them that he was in the pink of his health and narrated this hand. SAINA’S ALL ENGLAND DREAM ENDS IN AGONY B SPORTS
irmingham: Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal's quest for becoming the first Indian woman to win the most prestigious All England badminton championship ended in agony after she suffered a heart-breaking loss to Spain's Carolina Marin in the summit clash. The World No. 3 Indian let go of a huge opportunity to script history as she squandered an opening game lead to go down 21-16 14-21 7-21 to the reigning world champion in the women's singles final that lasted for little over an hour. Olympic bronze medallist, Saina, thus, failed to emulate her long-time coach Pullella Gopichand (2001) and legendary Prakash Padukone (1980), who had won the prestigious title in the past. Saina, who has been competing at the All England since 2007, had never lost to Carolina and looked on course for an encore before the World No. 6 Spaniard scripted a remarkable comeback in the second game to put paid to the Indian's hopes at the Barclaycard Arena. A billion hopes rode on Saina as she geared up for the finals with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also wishing her luck through social networking site twitter, but

After suffering heartbreaks at the semifinals of the event in 2010 and 2013, it was yet another case of so near yet so far for the girl from Hyderabad, who has at least 16 international titles in her kitty. After dominating the opening game completely, Saina was leading 11-9 in the second but lost steam after the break, as Carolina fought back brilliantly and bagged eight out of the last nine points. In the decider, Carolina
stamped her authority with her sharp smashes and better movement to completely make it a one-sided contest as Saina could only watch her hopes went up in smoke.Saina, who had defeated Carolina in the finals of the Syed Modi International championship at Lucknow in January early this year, started as the hot favourite. Sporting a black dress, Saina started off with an unforced error but soon brought out her power-packed smashes to lead 4-2. The left

BRIDGE Actually in this position south has all losers in his hand, but watch the fun. South played a spade from his hand west won with King and made the only return which allowed south to make his contract. If west returns a spade east can win both the tricks. But west backed a heart putting east’s trump in the middle, thus south scored his last trump en passé and the contract. Everyone laughed but one listener said “You can hardly compliment Mr. Badhir for making the contract. It was foolish defence that allowed declarer to land his contract” The expert retorted “I never said MR. Badhir was south. He was actually west. You see from next year IBPA is instituting a prize in a new category” “what is that” all the listeners asked in a chorus. The expert pompously replied “The best dummy play by a defender”

Saina exploited the chinks in Carolina's defence as she drew her close to the net and gathered points to go into the break with a 11-6 lead. Carolina showed her brilliance through her exceptional smashes and soft touches at the nets but they faded in front of Saina's brilliance as the Indian led 14-8.

ydney: All-rounder Glenn Maxwell led a brutal Australian assault with his maiden ODI hundred as the four-time winners overcame a spirited Sri Lanka by 64 runs and inched closer to securing a quarterfinals berth in the cricket World Cup. Opting to bat in the Pool A match, Australia posted a mammoth 376 for nine against a hapless Sri Lanka side, before the islanders' innings ended at 312 in 46.2 overs. Kumar Sangakkara tried to make a match of it, notching up his 24th ODI ton during an innings that saw him complete 14,000 runs in this format, only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the milestone. After the veteran Sangakkara's dismissal, Dinesh Chandimal kept Sri Lanka alive with a swashbuckling 24-ball 52, but the islanders were rocked after the batsman was forced to retire hurt at a crucial juncture due to a hamstring injury. Earlier, besides Maxwell's swashbuckling 53-ball 10, which was the second fastest World Cup hundred, the Australian scorecard was studded with three fluent half-centuries in a formidable middle-order batting performance. Maxwell got to the threefigure mark in just 51 balls, just one short of the World Cup record held by Ireland's Kevin O'Brien. Skipper Michael Clarke (68), Steve Smith (72) and allrounder Shane Watson (67) showed rampaging form during the course of their fifties as Australia sent the Lankans on a leather hunt in front of a packed house at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. When their turn to bat came, Sri Lanka were served well by Sangakkara's 24th ODI century, Tillakaratne Dil-

S
ydney: Kumar Sangakkara became only the second batsman after Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar to score 14,000 One-day International runs when the Sri Lankan veteran reached the landmark against Australia in a World Cup Pool A match. He also became the first batsman to score hundreds in three consecutive World Cup matches. Sangakkara was 39 short of reaching the milestone when he came out to bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Chasing a mammoth 377-run target, Sangakkara put up a
spirited show with his fluent century and kept Sri Lanka in the hunt till he was dismissed. Left-hander Sangakkara, 37, got to the feat with a paddled
two to fine leg off spinner Glenn Maxwell in the 14th over of Sri Lankan innings. This was Sangakkara's 378th innings in 402 ODIs. Sangakkara has been in prolific touch and in his last two outings scored back to back centuries. He scored a 73-ball ton against Bangladesh and then notched up another impressive hundred off 70 balls against England. Both his hundreds proved to be match winning ones and gave Sri Lanka much needed fillip after their poor start against New Zealand in the tournament opener.
The retired Tendulkar remains way in front with 18,246 runs in 463 matches. The three centuries took Sangakkara's tally to 24 hundreds and he has the most centuries for Sri Lanka after Sanath Jayasuriya's 28 tons. The classy left-handed batsman features fourth on the list of all-time most hundreds in ODIs, which includes Tendulkar (49), former Australian captain Ricky Pointing (30) and Jayasuriya on third. Sangakkara also became the first Sri Lankan batsman to notch up 14,000 runs in ODIs.
linga was the only bowler to hold his own with figures of 2/59 in his quota of 10 overs. The Aussies, left rattled by a one-wicket loss to New Zealand in their previous match, came out all guns blazing today and even though explosive opener David Warner (9) was out early, the hosts simply decimated the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The assault started with Clarke and Smith combining for a 134-run thirdwicket stand during which the skipper's confident de-
meanour put to rest any speculation regarding his fitness after a hamstring surgery, which had created doubts about his participation in the World Cup. While Smith smashed seven fours and a six during his 88-ball stay in the middle, Clarke struck half a dozen fours and a six in his 68-ball knock. This was followed by a brutal assault by Maxwell, during which the imposing all-rounder whacked 10 fours and four sixes, completely taking the wind out Sri Lanka's sail.
Zim's WC disappoints Taylor H
obart: Zimbabwe standin skipper Brendan Taylor blamed bouts of sloppiness for his side's poor showing at the World Cup after an agonising five-run loss to Ireland ended their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. Saturday's reverse meant Zimbabwe, a Test nation, had won just one of their five Pool B matches so far -- and even their success against the part-timers of the UAE was a struggle. Taylor did more than most to turn things around against Ireland with a superb century that rescued his side from what looked like a
thrashing at Hobart's Bellerive Oval but that was little consolation. "We've been very disappointing, there's no doubt about that," he said. "We came here to win three games, and we haven't done it. "There's been positions against South Africa, against Pakistan, even against West Indies, positions that we could have got over the line if we were a little bit smarter as batters, hold all our catches, put our bodies on the line when we're fielding. At times we've been very sloppy, and that's come back to haunt us," he added.

"Bangladesh comes second on the list followed by Ireland, the UAE and finally Scotland. Surprisingly Scotland surpasses Zimbabwe when it comes to online search trends as Zimbabwe stood last in terms of search interest online," the analysis pointed out. The study said that the new teams have their share of great players and have proved on more than one occasion that whether experienced or not, they are no walk-overs. "The minnows have consequently sprung a surprise or two against older and more experienced teams," Google said. On the most searched players in the lesser experienced teams, the study said Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh lived up to his reputation in this World Cup and topped the chart.
Vettori joins 300 club
Napier (New Zealand): Evergreen New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori joined cricket's exclusive 300 ODI wickets club with two early dismissals in their World Cup match against Afghanistan in Napier. He became the 12th player and first New Zealander to reach the milestone with the list headed by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (534) and Wasim Akram of Pakistan (502), the only two players to have breached the 500-wicket barrier. Vettori started against Afghanistan on 298 wickets and claimed his first scalp when brought on in the third over to allow fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult to change ends. With his first delivery he bowled opener Usman Ghani without scoring. Vettori returned to the attack in the 12th over and 13 balls later Nawroz Mangal became his 300th victim when he was bowled for 27. The 36-year-old Vettori has played 291 ODIs since first selected in 1997 and his 300 wickets are at an average 31.62. The former captain has also scored 2,213 ODI runs, while at Test level he has 362 wickets and 4,531 runs.
Sarfraz Ahmed effected six dismissals equalling the ODI record.
Pakistan’s Sarfraz elated at equalling Gilchrist record A
uckland: Recalled Pakistan wicketkeeperbatsman Sarfraz Ahmed said today he was excited at being bracketed with Australia great Adam Gilchrist after equalling the record for most catches behind the stumps in a one-day international innings. The 27-year-old, who did not feature in Pakistan's first four matches of the World Cup, marked his debut at this tournament in style with a run-a-ball 49 before holding six catches in
Pakistan's 29-run Pool B victory over South Africa in Auckland on Saturday that gave his side a chance of a quarter-final spot. "It's a great honour," Ahmed told AFP. "I didn't know about the record but after the match someone told me that I have equalled Gilchrist's record and that made me proud." Gilchrist became the first of seven keepers to take six catches behind the stumps when he achieved the feat against South Africa at Cape Town in 2000.
England fight for survival in a make-or-break battle A
delaide: Staring at an unexpected early exit, beleaguered England would be desperate to get their act together when they take on higher-placed Bangladesh in a do-or-die cricket World Cup Pool A league match here today. Having lost three of their four matches so far, England need nothing less than victories in the remaining two league games -- against Bangladesh and Afghanistan -- to stay in contention for the last eight stage. Bangladesh, with two wins from as many matches, are placed higher than England in the table at fourth position and the Asian team would be looking to consolidate its position. England had lost to Bangladesh by two wickets in the last World Cup in 2011 but still survived the shock defeat to qualify for the quarter-finals. However, there will be no such second chance this time. The English side has lost to all Test-playing nations so far in the -- Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka -- and their lone win has come against minnows Scotland.
tournament. Under Eoin Morgan's leadership, England would hope to rise to the occasion in the make-orbreak clash. Although Morgan himself has managed to score just 90 runs at an average of 22.50, his biggest concern will be the performance of his two pace spearheads James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Anderson's two wickets so far have come at an unusually high average of 91 while Broad averages 92 for his two scalps. Meanwhile, Bangladesh have ensured that sharing points with Australia in the rained-off match in Brisbane has not been wasted. SHOAIB BHAI’S ADVICE WORKED FOR ME: SHAMI P 32

erth: Crediting Shoaib Akhtar for bringing back rhythm in his bowling, Indian pacer Mohammad Shami has said the former Pakistan speedster advised him to shorten his run-up, which has helped him increase his pace. "The recent change in runup has surely increased my pace. So I am continuing with it and hoping that it pays rich dividends. I did have a chat with Shoaib (Akhtar) bhai and he suggested that I should reduce my big strides. So shortened my stride and it has worked. It (the new runup) is smooth and comfortable and it has also increased my pace," Shami said in a post-match chat on Star Sports. Shami, who returned to action against West Indies after missing a game due to a niggle, bagged three wickets at the WACA to help table-toppers India register their fourth straight win and book a quarter-final berth from pool B. With the Men in Blue now in New Zealand for their final two games of the league, Shami is keen to carry on the good work without making any more changes to his action. "I don't want to change much in my action. And most of the ex-players have advised me against making any major changes to my action. It is always a double edged sword, to change one's action. It can work for you or go against you. I don't want go through this confusion and I am satisfied with the little change that I have made to my run-up, said the Bengal medium-pacer. "I do not want to make much changes to my action or strategy in new Zealand as well. Very happy with how

"I have enjoyed bowling in Perth because I was getting the bounce and carry. Wherever I have gone, I have found flat wickets. I had heard a lot about Australian wickets, but did not see them in the Test matches but now I see that in Perth, said the 24-year-old bowler. On Friday, Shami also got the all-important wicket of Chris Gayle, result of a well thought-out plan that turned
Don’t think India’s guard will ever be down: Porterfield H
obart: Fighting to stay in contention for the World Cup quarterfinals, Ireland cricket captain William Porterfield said his giant-slaying team does not expect to be taken lightly by India despite the buzz that the already through defending champions might rest key players. Ireland, having beaten West Indies and Zimbabwe so far, are in the hunt for a last-eight spot and will face India in Hamilton on Tuesday.
"No, I don't think their guard will ever be down. They're a squad of 15, so whatever they decide to do, they decide to do," Porterfield told reporters after the five-run triumph over Zimbabwe here. "It's a long tournament, and they're not going to look to lose any momentum from their point of view. Whatever they decide to do is out of our control. Whoever they decide to play, it doesn't really bother me," he said.
Shami is the best among Indian pacers: Aaqib Javed
Hamilton: Former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed feels that Mohammed Shami is the best Indian paceman on view and his performance has been key to India's good show in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. Shami has been the pick of India's pace attack taking 9 wickets from three matches and his opening spell has proved to be crucial in India maintaining their

I am also impressed by young Mohit Sharma and believe that he would turn out to be a good weapon for India in future," Aaqib, who is currently the UAE coach said.

‘Not playing Aussies everytime is key to Shikhar’s success’ By Kushan Sarkar
H
amilton: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels that key to opener Shikhar Dhawan's success in the cricket World Cup is about playing freely which was not happening during the Australia series. "I believe it is about playing freely in the World Cup that can be attributed to Shikhar's success as it was not happening earlier during the Australia series," Ganguly said during an interaction, here today. "Look, the moment you are not playing Australia everytime, you don't have those thoughts at the back of your mind that 'Oh I will have to face (Mitchell) Johnson again, oh I will have to face (Mitchell Starc) again'," he added. The 42-year-old said he was always confident of India doing well at the World Cup. "The World Cup was always going to be a different ball game. You don't need to play Australia in Australia everyday during the World Cup. India was always going to do well in the World Cup," Ganguly, who is known for his straightforward assess-
ment, said. Ganguly, like most people believe, that the bowlers have done a great job in the tournament. "Indian bowlers have done a splendid job. They have surpassed everyone's expectations. Mohammed Shami has been consistent and Umesh Yadav has been brilliant. It's good to see a bowler hitting 145 kmph consistently. Mohit Sharma turned out to be the surprise package in the line-up. The way he has improved with each match is phenomenal," said the man, who led India to World Cup final in 2003 in South Africa. Ganguly feels that India is a very good ODI side and that has been proved yet again in the global tournament. "India are a better ODI bowling unit than what they are in Test cricket. It's a shorter format where you don't have to bowl those long spells," said Ganguly. The elegant left-hander of yesteryears feels that Ravindra Jadeja's role as second specialist spinner in this World Cup will be needed as he expects India to reach the summit round.
Shikhar Dhawan had a horrible season Down Under prior to the World Cup facing the short-stuff presented to him by the Australian bowlers.
‘Will never do anything to harm my team or country’ K
arachi: Pakistan's underfire cricket coach Waqar Younis has tried to play down the controversy over the selection of wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, saying he is a patriotic Pakistani and will never do anything to harm the team or the country. "I am a very patriotic Pakistani. I will never do anything to harm my team or country. This is my team, I am all for them. We are going to try to make our people proud of us. We are going to try to do the best things we can do with our knowledge and experience," Waqar told

"Sarfraz no doubt is an asset to Pakistan cricket and he has proved it over the time," he said.
