n 18 year-old college youth, Ajay Lotan Rakme, has been allegedly beaten to death with an iron rod over a fight for just Rs 400 at Sangharsh Nagar locality in Chandivali on Wednesday night. He had borrowed the money from one of the prime accused, Pravin Rajendra Rathod. The other two accused have been

identified as Amol Balaji Nagar and Akash Ravindra Sardar alias Mogli, Sakinaka police said.

Police say the deceased Ajay Lotan Rakme was sitting outside his building in Sangharsh Nagar, when prime accused Pravin came and demanded his Rs 400 back, which Ajay had taken on credit. However, he refused to pay up and a heated argument ensued, which ulti-

mately culminated in a physical brawl. His two other friends Amol and Akash joined him and assaulted him with an iron rod.

“Ajay died due to serious injuries sustained by him.

The accused have been booked under sections 302 and 340 of the IPC and produced before the magistrate who had remanded them to police custody,” police added.

He also said that the medical cost for the patient reduces significantly due to this procedure. “Normally such patients undergo continuous blood transfusion treatment every week. But this treatment cost only Rs.20 lakh including the medicines given before and after treatment. It also cuts the cost of finding donors from abroad and other cities,” said Dr. Padate.

Bharat explained that Onkar's problem was detected in 2009 after spotting some bruises and dark spots in his body. Bharat had to pay Rs.5000 per month for blood transfusion treatment. Doctors at Kolhapur recommended him to get a bone marrow transplant at Hinduja Hospital. Aplastic Anaemia is a serious and rare condition which can affect people of any age group wherein the bone marrow fails to produce any new blood cells and can expose the patient to various infections.

Egypt to rope in Indian celebrities to boost tourism

IN an attempt to pump up the dwindling flow of foreign tourists to Egypt, authorities in Cairo are attempting to rope in more Indian celebrities to woo travellers from India.

Tourism, which is one of the centrepieces of the Egyptian economy, suffered a severe blow due to many violent attacks by militants since the January 2011 revolution.

The latest success of megastar Amitabh Bachchan's visit to the country for the 'India by The Nile Festival' has prompted Egyptian Tourism to include more Indian celebrities in their effort to help them highlight the fact that Egypt is strongly back in the market. “Indian tourists are one of our most important, promising markets. We believe there are lots to do in the Indian market over the coming few months to increase the number of tourists to Egypt. Some of them are directed to the consumers such as 'India By The Nile Festival' in Egypt attended by Amitabh Bachchan," Ismail A Hamid, Egyptian Tourism Counsellor, told PTI. The tourism officials are also taking steps to increase the awareness of the different segments of Indian people to the beauty of Egypt, not only the Pyramids of Giza but also Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.

plants which can take up nicotine from cigarette smoke and contaminated soil, according to a new study.

The findings may explain why high concentrations of nicotine are often found in spices, herbal teas and medicinal plants, despite the fact that this alkaloid is no longer permitted in insecticides, researchers said.

Previously, nicotine was frequently used as an insecticide until it was banned by the European Union in 2009 because of its toxicity, researchers said.

However, a large number of food crops and plant-derived products still contain very high levels of nicotine.

Dirk Selmar and colleagues at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, wanted to find out whether there are other reasons at play than the possible illegal use of nicotine-containing insecticides.

They used peppermint plants (Mentha x piperita), which contain minimal traces of nicotine, in a series of mulching and fumigation experiments.

"Tremendously elevated nicotine levels were detected after fumigation with cigarette smoke," said Selmar.

Selmar's team is also the first to show that peppermint plants can actually take up high concentrations of nicotine from contaminated soils.

uch will depend upon the outcome of the Bandra East assembly by-election which goes to polls on April 11. The outcome which will be known on April 15 will in a way decide on the future political career of senior Congress leader Narayan Rane who has staked a lot. He has put up a massive show of strength during his campaigning taking on Shiv Sena's Trupti Sawant in a triangular contest with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) Siraj Rahebar Khan. The simultaneous assembly by-election to Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal has been completely been relegated to the sidelines.

The assembly by-elections to both Bandra East and Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal seats has been necessitated due to the demise of sitting members – Prakash @ Bala Sawant (Sena) and R R Patil, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively. The contest in Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal appears to be a one-sided affair where NCP has fielded Suman Patil, widow of late R R Patil. Here all the major political parties having decided not to field their candidates against the widow of late R R Patil.

But all eyes are on the outcome of Bandra East assembly by-election where Rane has staked his political career.

Here the voter population is 2.69 lakh, out of which 1.38 lakh are male, 1.26 lakh female and 4 Other category voters. In the 2014 assembly polls the voting percentage in Bandra East was 47.22 percent and in Tasgaon-Kavthe Mahankal it was 75.84 percent.

is Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq, head of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra Community returned to Mumbai a few days back to a tumultuous and warm welcome by the Dawoodi Bohra Community, after his historic first visit as Dai al-Mutlaq to USA and a pilgrimage to the holy shrines in Cairo, Karbala and Najaf. During his US visit, His Holiness dedicated four masjids in California – in Los Angeles, Bakersfield, San Jose and Orange County.

In each of these cities he was greeted by thousands of Dawoodi Bohras from across USA and welcomed by state and city officials and local

community leaders.

nstead of making money, shopkeepers of Tilak Nagar Municipal Market are reportedly reeling under a huge financial crunch as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to deliver its promises made to them. The more than 50 years old Municipal market was marked for redevelopment in 2010 by Manthan Developers. The builder Abhijeet Rane demolished the market building in May 2010 and had according to the registered agreement promised to hand over the redeveloped market to the owners in 24 months. According to the agreement, the builder was also suppose to pay rent to the shopkeepers which ranged between Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000 per month.

The shop keepers initially seemed to be a happy, excited lot as they were getting their shops renovated. But within months their excitement soon turned into a sorrow when the re-construction work of their market abruptly stopped.

Since then the shop keepers who are BMC licence holders have been attempting to contact the builder and also the concerned officers but their efforts are in vain from the last four years. He also has called for a joint meeting with the concerned officials on April 16, 2015 which has come as a ray of hope to the shop keepers.

After the pandemonium in the house, the Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan assured the members that not a single drop of water from the state's share will be given to neighbouring Gujarat.Significantly, amid the noisy scenes, the Speaker Haribhau Bagde issued directives for a presentation on the project to be made to members of both Houses in the central hall.This issue was raised by the opposition members after the question hour saying that there is no

The new state government, after getting into the saddle of governance during the first few months of its rule, has officially announced its intention of rehabilitating the Pandits, languishing for decades in the Jammu region of the state. The Chief Minister of J&K, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has announced that the state government would acquire and provide land for the displaced Pandit community in the Kashmir Valley.

The Common Minimum Programme, put in place jointly by the BJP and the PDP has this objective as one of its important agendas.

This announcement is probably placing the first brick, metaphorically speaking, to rebuild the broken house that is Kashmir, still in a near-dilapidated state, ever since a devastating tempest tore into it with unrelenting fury.

In this objective, Sayeed has the wholehearted support of the central government.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh views it as an important priority. He had earlier written a letter on the same subject, a few months back, to the former chief minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah, regarding identification of land for the displaced Pandit community. Additionally, the state government of J&K has set aside Rs.580 crore for the concerned task.

MAHARASHTRA Government's decision to screen Marathi movies at the 6 pm prime time slot by it's coercion may prove to be detrimental to Marathi cinema's interests because it may generate negative publicity. By reserving a time slot, can it force people to watch movies which they would not because of steep rates of multiplexes and at the same time can they force producers to screen at multiplexes despite heavy rentals.

How will they recover the costs?

Moreover, Marathi movies are made on a shoe string budget and Govt is trying to squeeze the multiplexes for some cheap political gains. Why is the Govt not making all Marathi movies tax free for five years so that maximum people can watch them? Why does a multiplex have to show a Marathi movie in the prime time slot when on first three days, movies which are running to packed houses should make way to some Marathi movie which may not have even the half house full. It's absurd to dictate the economics of film trade in a democracy. What Govt is trying is not democracy. Certainly not!

Maharashtra CM CM Fadnavis has issued a clarification saying that the ban on slaughter of cows, bulls and bullocks is not based on religious sentiments but is a move to prevent cruelty to animals ("Cow ban law to prevent cruelty to animals", ADC, April 8) His claim is seriously flawed and lacks a scientific basis.

Without doubt it is religion which has played a key role in guiding the ban.

In Israel and in many Islamic nations where the pig is viewed as a ritually unclean animal, pork is available and in Israel pig farms are set up by Jews and many liberal Jews consume pork which has become staple fare on the menus of restaurants.

Application of chemicals in farms to protect crops kills millions of rodents, reptiles, worms and microorganisms. This too is an act of cruelty and murder. CC camera RECENTLY HRD Minister Irani while changing clothes in a trial room in Goa store spotted a hidden camera and raised an alarm. Four persons were arrested on a case of voyeurism. Many such cases have come to the fore in the recent past but without any solution or strict action taken.

It is of utmost important that some very strict law is made against its misuse like canceling of licence of such stores, heavy penalty like minimum of Rs 1 crore and rigorous imprisonment etc. And such laws must be strictly implemented too.

This kind of cases are not only a case of voyeurism but violates privacy and leads to MMS, pornography type material which sometimes is used for black mailing innocent women too.

As far as the rising cases of chain-snatching are concerned, I feel women themselves must

avoid wearing gold jewelery, and if at all they wear them, they must be alert.

The best way to curb such incidents is that women should start wearing imitation jewelery for everyday use. They must keep their heavy gold jewelery for special occasions like weddings or parties and be cautious whenever they wear them. Though mostly women are targeted, even men are falling prey to such crimes.

We cannot expect the police to provide 100% vigilance to curb such incidents across the city. I have no idea of what punishments are awarded to those who are caught for gold thefts, but considering the gold prices, it has become an easy way of making money, and anyone who wears gold — be it men or women — becomes an easy target for the criminals. Self-restraint is the best measure to avoid being a victim of gold theft.

hree tests will be conducted in an academic year so as to improve the quality of education in state board schools, the Maharashtra government on Thursday said.

State Education Minister Vinod Tawde during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council said of the three tests, one will be on the lines of common board exam.

Tawde said the RTE (Right to Education) Act has been misinterpreted due to which a number of schools have stopped conducting tests.

A query was raised by Congress MLC Husnabano Khalife on the "declining" quality of education in governmentrun school, citing chief reason to be that some schools stopped conducting exams for classes I-VIII as per norms under RTE. "We are planning to conduct three tests a year. Two would be internal tests and one basic test. This is to understand quality of the education imparted to the students. We will help schools to improve their performance

by taking appropriate measures," he said.

The minister also clarified that the schools would be issued instructions in this regard, reports PTI. "The RTE has not said anything about not conducting exams. It has asked not to fail wards and promote them in the next class. However, it is also mentioned that schools should give additional coaching to weak students. If there is misunderstanding about schools not conducting exams, we will send them instructions," Tawde said.

Khalife also asked about parameters while concluding on quality of education and if the government was planning to re-start the exams.

Later, speaking with media, the minister said the basic test announced will be on the lines of board exams and would be common for students of all schools.

"The three tests would be different from the mid-term and final exams. The basic test would be conducted in the beginning of session in June. A random survey would

also be conducted to know the quality of education," Tawde said.

While answering to another query on recent complaints about text books being sold to scrap dealers, Tawde said that an inquiry will conducted into all such complaints.

"An initial probe has been conducted. The books sold to the scrap dealer were new and not used. After probing the matter, we came to know that these were additional books taken from the government after showing false figure of the number of students by some schools so that teachers' jobs are safe. But we are going to conduct an inquiry of the issue across the state," he said.

He has announced action under the Copyright Act against a movie poster of film 'Haramkhor' that has copied Balbharati text book's cover page.

The issue was raised by MLC Vikram Kale who asked the government to take action against the movie producer and director.

Tawde disclosed that the multiplex owners have agreed to show 124 shows of Marathi movies during the prime time duration.

o you dream of crusty bits of bread dripping in hot, stringy cheese? This European dish is easy to prepare, delicious and makes for a great sharing treat at an intimate gathering. Here we tell you more about the history of fondue, eating etiquette and what cheese and bread you should use for a classic version. Take a look — and then throw your own fondue party with our great tips!

The hisTory oF Fondue While many believe that fondue is a relatively new culinary innovation that originated in 1950, the origins of fondue are even older. In fact, there several accounts that point to Homer’s epic The Iliad, (believed to have been created between 760 and 710 B.C.), where Song XI had a recipe for fondue that spoke of a mixture of grated goat cheese, Pramnos wine and white flour. Early historical accounts suggest that fondue was peasant food and was meant to be a good way to use hard cheese and leftover bread.

Interestingly, it is believed that the word fondue originated from the French verb fondre, which means to melt. >> Make sure not to touch the fondue fork with your lips or teeth to avoid being scalded!

The 17th century saw some of the earliest printed recipes for fondue, which originated in a region that is believed to be part of Switzerland today. These early recipes used eggs along with Gruyere, which is a cheese that to this date is part of the traditional Swiss fondue. The preparation, which included adding melted cheese to eggs and then scrambling them, reads almost like a cheese soufflé and is unlike the fondue we are used to, which do not include egg in any form.

Fondue as we know it today, emerged in the early 20th century. One of the first modern recipes is believed to be in Madame Saint-Agne’s cookbook La Bonne Cuisine, which was published in 1927. Surprisingly, the cookbook is French, not Swiss. Since then, fondue recipes began to gain popularity, with 1950 considered to be an important point in the history of this preparation, when chef Konrad Egil of the Chalet Swiss Restaurant in New York, created what we know today as oil-based fondue (see ‘Types of fondue’ to find out more), which includes dipping meat in boiling oil till it is cooked.

In the ’60s and ’70s, fondue parties became extremely popular in America with varieties

Types oF Fondue Fondue doesn’t have to be limited to cheese or chocolate. There are essentially four different preparations, all of which can be classified as fondue. Take a look. n Cheese: The classic and most popular

version, this includes a bowl of boiling hot cheese, typically two types. Most variations of fondue use a hint of garlic to add extra flavour and some kind of flour in order to prevent the cheese from curdling.

Cheese fondue is eaten with bread. n Broth or bouillon: Fondue may not be

the first word that comes to your mind when you see a simmering pot of broth, but the technique is pretty similar.

Believed to have been invented by Mongolian warriors, broth fondue contains less calories than cheese fondue and includes pieces of vegetables such as potatoes as well as seafood, which are cooked in a simmering pot of broth. n oil fondue: Oil fondue may not be

Breads pairings You can use almost any kind of bread you want with a cheese fondue. The sky is the limit! Even stale bread tastes better when it is dipped in hot, melted cheese. But, if you want to create the perfect fondue, here are a few options to choose from. n French baguette: Distinguished by its

length and crustiness, this bread is the most common bread used for a fondue. You don’t even need to toast it. Just cut it up into cubes and you are good to go.

n Focaccia: Similar to pizza dough, focaccia is

Fondue etiquette Since fondue is essentially a communal dish, there is a certain etiquette that you need to follow when you’re eating it. Once you spear a piece of bread and dip it into the cheese, you need to hold it over the pot in order to let the excess cheese drip off and to ensure that you don’t get any cheese on the table. When it comes to eating, you have to make sure that you don’t touch the fondue fork with your teeth or your lips, since you’re going to be dipping it back into the cheese. If you find this hard to do, another slightly cumbersome way to eat it is to place the bread on a plate and use a second fork to slide the bread off the fondue fork. When you’re not using the fondue fork, it should be placed on your plate and not in the pot. When you’re eating oil fondue, spear the meat with the fondue fork and place it into the oil till the meat is cooked. Take it out of the pot, place the fork on your plate and use another fork to slide the meat off before eating it.

Best cheeses For a Fondue Cheese plays the most important role in a fondue and so, the better the cheese is, the better the fondue will taste. A fondue usually includes two kinds of cheese, and it’s crucial that you choose the right kind if you’re throwing a fondue party. Take a look at a few popular varieties that you can pick from.

Gruyère cheese A hard, yellow cheese, Gruyère is named after the town of Gruyères in Switzerland. It has a sweet and salty flavour profile, but the taste can vary depending on the age of the cheese.

Also known as Le Gruyère, this is the cheese that adds creaminess and nutty hint to a cheese fondue. To get the best out of this cheese, pick one that has been aged for five months to a year — you can tell whether it has been if the cheese has tiny cracks and a slightly grainy texture.

Commonly known as Emmental, this is a yellow, medium-hard cheese that originated around Emmental, Switzerland. It is produced with the help of three different types of bacteria. The holes that you see are produced by one of the bacteria that consumes lactic acid and releases carbon dioxide. You can tell that a fondue has been made using this cheese when it has a savoury flavour, although Emmental isn’t as sharp as other kinds of cheese. Emmentaler and Gruyère are a classic fondue combination that you can’t go wrong with.

Fondue was traditionally cooked in an earthen pot called a caquelon. However, today, you will also find fondue pots made from ceramic or enamelled iron. No matter what it is made of, what makes a fondue pot special is that it ensures an even distribution of heat and also allows this heat to be retained. The fondue mixture is heated on a normal burner and is then transferred to your table and placed over an alcohol burner or hot plate in order to ensure that mixture stays in a liquid form.

Fashion that works Kaaryah.com is a newly launched website dedicated to formal wear for women. anindra Siqueira gleans over the website to tell you whether it’s worth shopping at

aaryah.com is a shopping portal that plays host to nothing but formal work attire for women — in that way, the brand is very specific in its target audience. The online store has been up and running for some time now, so I logged on to take a look at the website and see whether it’s worth your time, especially if you’re looking for chic work attire.

One of the USPs of the website is that it caters to 18 different sizes for women, based on not one, but three standard measurement scales. And while other sites have clothing for women in four or five sizes, Kaaryah.com has it in chiefly six sizes — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. It categorises sizes using the three measurements — that of the bust, waist and hips — but also suggests an additional dimension (petit, regular or curvy), which probably accounts for the 18 sizes.

The good thing about the online store is that it has a wide variety of clothing and most of it is pretty stylish.

There is a rather pleasingly large selection when it comes to its range of tops and trousers, and you will find that

the variety of skirts, dresses and jackets is also decent.

But, the website layout isn’t great. The homepage is a bit cluttered and the product pages display ‘related products’ right next to the product you’re looking at — if you’re accustomed to shopping for clothing online, this feature will take some getting used to. However, because of the large images on the listing pages (when you browse by product, collection or if you initiate a search), navigating through the website is a charm.

Something that I thought would have made shopping more convenient is if there were multiple product views when you move your mouse over the images.

Other online clothing stores include this feature, and it makes shopping a bit easier. With it, you don’t have to visit every product page to see more of a particular product; you have that right where you are.

Sorting options are limited, but searching for items is easy enough. You probably won’t need intricate sort commands when you’re shopping on kaaryah.com — the bare-bones sorting options that have been provided will do.

The prices of clothing on the website vary considerably — while they start at around `600 (after discount), they can go all the way up to `6,000 (about `3,500 after discount). However, we think that most of the items are worth their price tags. ocated in a large basement under the Audi Showroom on Andheri Link Road, Couch Potato is a new home décor store devoted to — you guessed it — couches! Lucky enough to have procured a massive space (which has been utilised well), the store houses strategically placed sofa sets arranged to look like they would in your living room. Complete with coffee tables and carpets, browsing through the well-designed Couch Potato makes selecting merchandise a breeze.

The first thing that struck me was the variety on offer. When I visited, the store had around 20-25 sofa sets on display, each sporting a different design — from the fabric and colours to the shape and structure. Apart from the usual suspects (black, classy couches and maroon ones with a royal touch), the store also had a range of attractive, youthful colours such as yellow, violet and orange.

There was something that I felt was missing though — there was a lack of designs with visible wooden frames. Now I’m not really a fan of couches that have visible frames — and it seems as though the store isn’t either, with just a few designs that offer a mix of naked wooden legs and fabric options. However, for a store that promises to provide a wide variety of sofa sets, this is something that should be part of their catalogue.

While I was expecting to see a good range of couches, I was also impressed by their range of centre tables. Most of them were simply designed and made to match the couches that they were paired with. This may be a problem if you’re looking to buy a centre table to go with

your sofa, because they look so good at the store that anything other than the couch against which they are placed can leave you disappointed.

Couch Potato also has a decent range of cushions, all of which are well-designed and perfect for daily use, but nothing out of the ordinary. Their range of paintings, on the other hand, is quite impressive and will add a unique touch to your wall décor. The store also does customisations (to an extent) — they can play around with the fabric and size of their designs, but they stop short of building a new couch from scratch. Their defence? They prefer to stick to doing what they do best. And, having seen their collection, I can’t argue with that!

up to `3.5 lakhs, which is a bit steep, but the well-finished designs are worth the price. Their centre tables cost about `25,000, while you can pick up cushions for around `1,000. The paintings are priced from `8,500 onwards.

Couch Potato is a good place to shop at if you’re decorating a new home or renovating. As far as sofa sets are concerned, they are miles ahead of most home décor outlets in the city.

With a single-minded focus on couches, they will not disappoint.

electronics Midival Punditz is releasing their fourth album, Light, which mixes their signature electronica tunes with Indian folk music.

Dev Goswami speaks to Gaurav Raina from the Delhi-based duo to find out more

I

ndian folk music has been gaining popularity — folk artists are in vogue and interesting trends have been cropping up over the past year. Several mainstream artists have started incorporating elements of Indian folk into their productions.

Light, the new album from decade-old band Midival Punditz (Tapan Raj & Guarav Raina) is a great example. n Tell us about your fourth studio album!

Bright Beats If you enjoy electronic music, you’ve probably heard about Derek Vincent Smith a.k.a Pretty Lights. Yamini Walia caught up with him before his first performance in the city

erek Vincent Smith, who goes by the stage name Pretty Lights, rose to popularity after performing at music festivals such as the Ultra Music Festival, Nocturnal Festival and Evolve Festival. He enthralled audiences in New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai for the first time as part of VH1 Supersonic and MTV Indies Spiro. After witnessing his performance in the city (and it was absolutely mind-boggling!), I’m an even bigger fan. In an interview, which we conducted before the show, he tells us more about his music and his trip to India.

It’s been conceptualised to be presented live with a full band — the same way as in the studio version. The album has strong roots in various styles of Indian folk music and also our signature style of electronica. We have collaborated with talented artists from across India to showcase various folk styles such as Carnatic, Rajasthani and UP. These artists include Malini Awasthi, Papon, Kutle Khan, flautist Pandit Ajay Prasanna and Baiju Dharmajan, among others. We’ve played at a lot of music festivals and are inspired by the theatrics. That led us to conceptualise the album as a full-fledged show, where the tracks were dramatic enough to create dynamics within a live performance. n When it came to Indian influences in Light, you chose

folk over classical. Why? The sound that we were trying to achieve needed an Indian folk influence. Indian folk has a rustic and unfinished beauty to it, which we wanted to tap into. We have always had great admiration for the folk singers that we’ve worked with, and we wanted to explore that.

n Indian folk music has become quite popular, with several

artists featuring them in their songs, mixes and performances. Do you think the trend is here to stay?

I think Indian folk music has been neglected in many ways and people are now recognising it in mainstream and other genres. I think that it is amazing music and needs respect and love. n You’ve worked on the music for a number of films and

are you looking forward to the most?

Yes, this is my first visit to India — I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I don’t know a lot about the music of this country, but as a vinyl junkie and crate digger, I have been exposed to a lot of old Ravi Shankar records and have amassed a collection of his work. I am interested in learning about the current beat producer scene in Mumbai. And, by learning about, I mean hearing as much of the music as I can. I have met several producers and DJs and I’m connecting with the music even now — whatever I’ve heard has got me excited. n Tell us about your performances

in India.

The concerts/ parties in India have been at the forefront of my thoughts.

My intention is to put on a show that is unique and fun for me on stage and also one that exemplifies the best and most diverse songs and styles within Pretty Lights’ body of work. The visual aspect of the live performance is also hugely important to the experience. The visuals are all about synchronisation

of rhythm, emotion and energy between the music, the audience and the sensory stimulation.

As I began to understand that I wanted to make music as a career and more as a lifestyle, I started thinking about what it would mean and how it would be like to create original music. I listen to a lot of music now, and listened to even more music before Pretty Lights took off. I would think about what made

I am so excited to be working on new projects, a new album, multiple singles and episodic/ cinematic music videos. My next single will sound (in large part) like my experience in India. I’m working on a song here. I always want to challenge myself with new projects and push forward artistically, aesthetically and, now especially, how I think people experience art and music. There are so many exciting possibilities where independent artists can break the mould of the traditional music industry. A huge part of what makes my new projects original and cutting edge will be the way they are presented and released. *The Pretty Lights concert took place on April 4 at Mehboob Studios, as part of MTV Indies Spiro.

I think as far as films go, we collaborated with Karsh Kale on a few projects and that was very inspirational and fun.

Our interactions with Shankar Ehsaan Loy were also pleasant. The trio has a deep respect for what we do and we share the same for them. n Tell us about your most memorable gig or performance.

I think our most memorable gig will always be sharing the stage with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Karsh Kale and Bill Laswell, at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco in 2001, in front of 25,000 people. It was truly a magical start to our career as musicians.

Forecasts for most emerging and developing economies are slightly worse than last year, with lower commodity prices one of the main drivers. While they still represent more than two thirds of global growth this year, there is tremendous diversity within this group. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (April 09, 2015) a net 63.90 points (0.73%) and closed at the 8778 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 8756 points level. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8682 points level at 9.54 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.35 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 8785 points level at 3.22 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 103 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were gainers, while 18 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in banking and metal stocks, while substantial selling was seen in healthcare stocks.

The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 8509 points level.

The next support is at the 8407 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8788 points level.

Moody’s Raises Outlook For 15 Banks, FIs To ‘Positive’

redit rating agency Moody’s has revised upwards the outlook to positive, from stable, for 12 state-owned banks and financial institutions including SBI, PNB, Canara Bank, REC and PFC. It also revised to positive the outlook on the long- term ratings of private sector lenders — ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank.

“We have affirmed the longterm ratings and changed the outlook to positive from stable for 12 Indian government- owned financial institutions,” the US-based agency said.“The rating actions (on 12 public-sector entities) are in line with our affirmation of India’s Baa3 rating,” it said.

Earlier in the day, Moody’s raised India’s credit rating outlook to ‘positive’ and said an upgrade in its sovereign rating is also possible in the next 12-18 months. India’s sovereign rating currently stands at ‘Baa3’, the lowest investment grade — just a notch above ‘junk’ status.

The 12 state-owned financial institutions include State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Power Finance Corp, and Rural Electrification Corp.

The rating agency said an improvement in the government’s own creditworthiness, as measured by its sovereign rating, has the potential to lift the supported ratings for the financial institutions. “The assignment of a positive outlook on the sovereign’s and the financial institutions’ ratings signals a higher probability of the sovereign providing support to the financial institutions in times of stress,” it said.

Reacting to the Rating Upgrade, the finance ministry believes that it reaffirms faith In Indian Economy. .”Moody’s decision continues to reaffirm that rating agencies,

global investors and our own domestic businesses have faith in India’s growth outlook and our financial strength as a sovereign,” Minister of State for Finance, Jayant Sinha told reporters after the upgrade, saying that the measures taken by the policymakers would enhance economic strength.

The rating agency also said that it could upgrade India’s rating in 12-18 months time if such measures propel growth. “The macroeconomic situation has improved dramatically in last 10 months, obviously due to action that we have taken as far as fiscal policy is concerned,” Sinha said. Reiterating that India has benefited from declining global oil price, Sinha said, “So those macro-economic factors are very much in our favour. We have to work on (them) to ensure

that sector-wise growth picks up.”

Commenting on Moody’s action, Revenue SecretaryShaktikanta Das said it will increase and improve confidence of investors in India. “An important component of this positive outlook is the whole change in the taxation environment which is taking place over the last several months...A number of steps have been taken to position a non-adversarial tax administration,” Das said.

Meanwhile, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said this development affirms the positive programmes and policies announced in the Budget.”I hope the next stage would be up-gradation of the ratings itself,” Mehrishi said.

ndia Inc.’s revenue growth is expected “to slip to a 7-quarter low of 2.5% on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis in the March 2015 quarter. The weak performance of investmentlinked sectors and low global commodity prices will more than offset the moderate growth anticipated in export-oriented sectors and consumer-driven sectors. In the preceding quarter as well, revenue growth was a tepid 5.4%” says CRISIL Research. On the profitability front, though, it foresees a marginal uptick in EBITDA margins” Says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, CRISIL Research, “The year started on a promising note, with

revenue growing by 12.8% in Q1FY15. However, growth has decelerated in subsequent quarters with Q4 likely to show the lowest growth. Steel, petrochemicals, and man-made fibres manufacturers will be impacted by the rapid slide in global commodity prices. Sluggish growth in volumes (2% y-o-y) would constrain the revenue growth of cement companies, while capital goods manufacturers are likely to see a further 13% y-o-y fall in revenues. In aggregate, revenue growth for corporate India is likely to end up at ~ 7% in FY15.”

Domestic consumption and export-oriented sectors are likely to outperform but, here too, sectors heavily dependent on rural consumption such as motorcycles, tractors, and FMCG have been facing severe pressure on volumes as unseasonal weather conditions and slow growth in crop prices have dented farm incomes. This would impact topline growth for companies in these sectors. For example, we forecast FMCG companies to report revenue growth of 8-9% in Q4FY15, down from 14% growth in the first half of the year. Telecom companies have not been as severely impacted by subdued rural consumption; spike in data usage in

urban areas is expected to propel 11% growth in their topline. Other sectors likely to report doubledigit topline growth include IT services, pharmaceuticals, and auto components.

n expert committee on investment guidelines for National Pension System has recommended diversifying investment portfolio of NPS scheme into private equity and venture capital funds, PFRDA Chairman Hemant Contractor said yesterday. Currently, NPS funds can be invested only in Government Securities, corporate bonds and equities.

The total assets managed under NPS are about Rs 82,000 crore, while private sector contribution is just Rs 5,000 crore. Contractor said PFRDA is "positively looking" into NPS investing a part of corpus into private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC), as recommended by the G N Bajpai committee.

Government has approved setting up of the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), which will screen online threats and coordinate with the intelligence agencies to handle issues related to the national security. The centre, a critical component of India's plans to beef up its cyber security against hackers and espionage as well as to track terrorist activity online, is likely to start operations this year, a source said.

Government's cyber security arm Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) will be the main agency handling the establishment of NCCC. About Rs 800 crore had been sanctioned for this purpose, the source added.

MF Exposure To Bank Stocks Drops In March Mutual fund (MF) managers dropped their exposure in bank stocks to over Rs 73,000 crore in March after raising it for six consecutive months.

MF investments in bank stocks declined to Rs 73,575 crore as on March 31 after hitting an all-time high of Rs 77,805 crore in the preceding month, according to the latest data available with Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). In comparison, the investment in banking stocks stood at Rs 40,293 crore in March 2014.

Anand Sinha Joins PE Fund KKR Global private equity fund KKR has said former Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Anand Sinha has joined the firm as an industry advisor.

Sinha will support the fund's investments and help it build business across asset classes, KKR CEO (India) Sanjay Nayar said.In his role as Deputy Governor, Sinha oversaw the last round of allotment of new bank licences by RBI, in which IDFC and Bandhan were selected.This is the second post-retirement assignment for Sinha, who had earlier been hired in an advisory role at law firm Amarchand & Mangaldas. Sinha retired from RBI in January last year, after 37 years of service. He was incharge for commercial banks and non-bank lenders. KKR also has a NBFC business in the country.

ortraying an actual living person is a task in itself and for Kalki Koechlin it was even more challenging as she plays not just a real-life individual but someone who suffers from cerebral palsy in 'Margarita With A Straw'.

The 31-year-old actress has garnered a lot of praise for her role in the Shonali Bose-directed movie which is inspired from the filmmakers' cousin Malini.

The movie talks about her struggle with the normal activities in her life.

"It was scary of course, the whole disability act. I had to make sure that I pull it off perfectly. There was a lot of pressure. But I knew I had to do justice to my role as it is Shonali and Malini's very personal tale.

These two women have been very open to me about their lives. They have let me in and shared their darkest secrets," Kalki told PTI. 'Margarita With A Straw' had its world premiere on September 8, 2014 as part of the Contemporary World Cinema Programme at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The movie later went on to be screened at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, BFI London Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). The film will finally hit theatres on April 17.

Phadnis is a great dancer and as a director she knew exactly what she wanted from her actors and the crew especially the DoP who has given the film a great look. Her sense of music is also very good.

She has canned the film in beautiful locales of West Bengal, Sikkim and Mumbai.

You are a star in Marathi cinema, yet you do negative

roles in Hindi films?

Maybe it’s because of my rugged looks and my role in 'Sarkaar Raj' that my image has become so but I am happy to play the bad guy in Hindi cinema.

What are your forthcoming films?

Some Marathi films like ‘Yuddh’, ‘Vartamaan’ and a few international projects.

he first quarter of 2015 has ended, there is something to cheer. Last year, Vikas Bahl‘s Queen was the film of the quarter, this year it has to be Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Sharat Katariya’s charming and utterly original film, with an unconventional plus-sized heroine (Bhumi Pednekar), who makes no effort to get to a fashionable weight.

This was a very unusual film coming for the Yash Raj Films banner; another off beat film from that production house was Dibaker Banerjee’sDetective Byomkesh Bakshi. The film was appreciated for its production design, cinematography and performances, though the plot was convoluted and heavy going.

Still, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi was a film buff’s film.

Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui matched wits in Sriram Ragavan’s dark revenge drama, Badlapur, while Anushka Sharma played the city girl who is confronted with the ugly realities of rural India in Navdeep Singh’s NH 10—the success of both films won appreciation for their stars, and also proved that given the right content, Hindi film audiences do support offbeat films. Another example would be Rahasya which had a surprisingly long run in the cinema when better films give up—perhaps the curiosity about its story based on the sensational Arushi murder case had something to do with it. POH (MALAYSIA): Already out of the summit clash, a misfiring India had to toil hard to get the better of a lowly Canada 5-3 and register their first win in the ongoing 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament.

Rupinder Pal Singh (13th minute) and V R Raghunath (32nd) scored through penalty corners before Ramanadeep Singh (46th, 47th) scored two field goals, while Satbir Singh (49th) rounded off the tally with another field strike.

For Canada, who are ranked 15th in the world as compared to India's ninth spot, Oliver Scholfield (43rd), Jagdish Gill (49th) and David Jameson (52nd) were the goal getters.

Even though India had the better share of possession and ball control, they were far from impressive.

For the fourth straight match, the Indians were guilty of missing numerous chances and their fragile backline as usual conceded soft goals.

In the presence of two big dragflick exponents in

Raghunath and Rupinder, penalty corners are considered India's strong point, but they cut a sorry figure in this department as well, utilising just two of the eight short corners that came their way today.

Besides being new chief coach Paul van Ass' first win after taking charge of the team, the only solace from today's game was the performance of its forwardline, who finally showed some form by scoring three fine

It was, however, Canada who had the first shy at the goal when they earned the game's first penalty corner in the fifth minute but Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made double save to deny the opponents.

In the third quarter, India earned three more penalty corners but wasted all the opportunities. Canada stunned India when Scholfield scored from a counter attack in the 43rd minute with a powerful reverse hit, which Sreejesh had no answer to.

It was a goalfest for the spectators in the fourth and final quarter as Ramandeep, who was off colour till today's match, scored two goals in the span of two minutes to make the scoreline 4-1 in favour of India.

Ramandeep first pushed home after he was set up by Nikkin Thimmaiah in the 46th minute and then he neatly deflected in a Gurbaj Singh's cross from the right in the next minute.

Canada pulled one back in the 49th minute through a penalty corner conversion by Gill before Satbir extended India's lead guiding home a pass from Manpreet Singh.

But it was not the end, as India conceded yet another soft goal when Jameson tapped in from close range after an array of defenders failed to stop Gabriel Ho-Garcia's cross.
