TARIQ ABDUL PARVEEL WAS INVOLVED IN A CASE IN WHICH `3 CRORE WAS DEMANDED FROM A CITY BUILDER

A

fter the arrest of dreaded underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar, the city police have arrested a henchman of the don in connection with an extortion case in which a Juhu-based builder was threatened to shell out Rs.3 crore in November last year.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dhananjay Kulkarni, Tariq Abdul Parveen (48), who was in a Uttar Pradesh's jail in connection with a 1999 criminal case, was brought to Mumbai on a production warrant. After being brought here from Uttar Pradesh, Parveen was placed under arrest in the extortion case registered here in November last year. He will be produced before the court on Tuesday, the officer added.

The alleged accused Parveen had been earlier arrested from Nagpada by the Lucknow AntiTerrorism Squad on January 19 in connection with a criminal case registered with them. Since then he was lodged in a UP jail.

In November last year, Dawood's close aide Chhota Shakeel had personally made extortion calls to the city-based builder demanding Rs.3 crore. Police did not

reveal the name of the builder for security reasons.

While probing the case, the crime branch arrested Shakeel's close aide Ramnarayan Singh alias Bachi Singh along with five others for their alleged role in the crime.

During the investigation, Tariq's name also surfaced following which he too was arrested.

In the last one week, it is the second arrest made by city police in extortion cases including his brother Iqbal Kaskar who was arrested on February 3 in connection with an extortion case registered with J.J. Marg police station.

Kaskar was arrested after a complaint filed by real estate agent Mohammed Salim Sheikh alleging that Kaskar and his men had thrashed him and demanded Rs 3 lakh.

Kaskar and two others were booked under sections 385 (extortion), 323 (causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal code.

Kaskar was deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003 as he was wanted in a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. However, he was acquitted in both the cases in 2007.

On Monday he was produced before the court for further remand, but he was granted bail on the surety of Rs.50,000.

enceforth the front passenger seat in the black and yellow share taxis will be reserved for women. The motive of the act is to ensure that women sit comfortably and are not cramped around male passengers in the back seat.

The Regional Transport office (RTO) rules state that only four passengers can sit in the taxi, three in the rear seat and one next to the driver. However, share taxis many times fill in four to five people in the back seat.

Anita Singh, a regular passenger,

who takes a share taxi daily from CST to Bombay High Court, said, “I generally prefer the front seat as I don't have to be stuck sitting between male passengers. However, I don't know how far this will work as the cab driver just stuffs the passengers and do not care about the passengers. But still I would be happy if the rule is implemented properly.”

Sources in the Transport Department reveal that the State Transport Minister Diwakar Raote plans to introduce at least 20 new share taxi routes after 7,800 new taxis start plying on Mumbai roads.

"GPS trackers would help locate the vehicles," state Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said yesterday. He announced this while speaking to reporters at a taxi stand outside Vidhan Bhavan after launching a scheme to re-

serve front seat of shared taxi cabs for women.

Raote said with this scheme, women would not feel discomfort while occupying seats with unknown men at the back seat.

Also, he said, his department was planning to launch a helpline for passengers to lodge complaints against taxis and autorickshaws which refuses to ply passengers.

Breastfeeding prepares baby for solid food

Babies get microbes from breast milk that makes them 'more ready' for solid food, a new study has found. Researchers from University of North Carolina found that a baby's diet during the first few months of life has a profound influence on the composition,

diversity, and stability of the gut microbiome.

These factors, in turn, influence the baby's ability to transition from milk to solid foods and may have long-term health effects.

"We found that babies who are fed only breast milk have microbial communities that seem more ready for the introduction of solid foods," said Andrea Azcarate-Peril, assistant professor in the department of cell biology and physiology and the study's senior author.

"The transition to solids is much more dramatic for the microbiomes of babies that are not exclusively breastfed. We think the microbiomes of non-exclusively breastfed babies could contribute to more stomach aches and colic," she said.

The discovery adds to the growing awareness that the gut microbiome plays a major role in helping us digest food and fight pathogens, among other functions.

For the study, the research team collected stool samples and information about the diets and health of nine babies as they grew from ages 2 weeks to 14 months.

Applying genomic sequencing techniques to the stool samples, the scientists deduced the types and functions of the bacteria in the babies' gut microbiomes.

The analysis found that during the first few months of life there

were clear differences between the microbiomes of babies that were exclusively breastfed as compared to those fed both formula and breast milk.

Nanowafers may replace eyedrops

TINY drug-containing polymer nanowafers that are applied to the eye like a contact lens can eliminate the need for medicinal eyedrops, according to scientists, including one of Indian origin.

The nanowafers in the eye would proceed to gradually dissolve, releasing medication throughout the day, researchers said. Eyedrops do not always go right into the eye, and the liquid medication is often quickly expelled by blinking, or washed away by tears.

A team of scientists from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, led by Dr Ghanashyam Acharya developed the nanowafer.

It's clear and disc-shaped like a contact lens, but is only about onetenth the size. The pharmaceutical payload is contained within an array of nanoreservoirs embedded throughout the non-toxic polymer, 'Gizmag' reported. Users would apply it to the surface of their eye just once a day, then leave it to dissolve on its own - repeated blinking would not displace it.

umbai Bharatiya Janata Party unit president Ashish Shelar yesterday categorically denied having any link with the person by the name of Jeetu Raut as his personal assistant. His denial came after reports appeared in a section of the media that one of his PAs had threatened a police officer not to register a First Information Report (FIR) against goons of underworld don Chhota Rajan. He said that Raut was a ordinary party worker and that no call was made to the police in this connection.

Shelar stated that since the police have lodged a complaint and that since the matter is under investigation there is no question of his trying to interfere in the case. He added that he has always raised the issue of underworld crime in Mumbai in the state legislature. It may be recalled that on February 4, Bhandup police registered FIR against two alleged accused Nilesh Paradakar and Jaffrey under sections 504, 507, 506 (2) and 34 of IPC on the basis of a complaint of former Nationalist Congress Party

n a blunt message to his own party's government in Gujarat, Minister for Revenue Eknath Khadse has asked the Gujarat government not to allow cattle entry into Maharashtra borders this summer season in search of fodder. Speaking to newspersons here at his Mantralaya office he said that this year the drought situation in most parts of the state has forced the state government to ensure that fodder is reserved for cattle here.

The Minister disclosed that every year between February to May, herds of cattle from Kathiyawad in neighbouring Gujarat head towards border regions of Maharashtra in search of fodder. This year the drought is severe in Marathwada and parts of Vidarbha region.

Khadse stated that the government has already issued orders to reserve fodder for local cattle. He added that last year 18,000 villages were affected by drought and water scarcity whereas this year the number of villages has gone up to 24,000 villages. Khadse disclosed that

the government has given the powers of requisition and deployment of water tankers in villages facing scarcity.

Earlier, replying to queries over reports appearing in a section of the media of names of two Congress leaders from Maharashtra figuring in the list of people having accounts in HSBC Bank, Khadse remarked that so far many such unauthenticated lists have come up.

He added that as of now the government has no role in the issue. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has rubbished reports appearing in a section of the press that he (Fadnavis) and Khadse were not even on talking terms with each other.

hough the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the High Court (HC) had declared the evacuation of the Siddharth Vihar hostel (Wadala) to enable demolition, the students of the hostel ignored the diktat leading to their eviction overnight and a roofless situation. After the BMC and the HC declared the hostel building as dilapidated and dangerous, the students were asked to vacate the building for demolition. As the BMC began the demolition yesterday, the students protested claiming that they were not given prior notice about the same.

In April 2014, BMC had issued evacuation notice to the Siddharth Vihar hostel at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College located in Wadala. As the building was not evacuated, the BMC had decided to approach the metropolitan court for taking further action of disconnecting the electricity and water supply to the building so that it would be vacated soon to avoid any untoward incident. ormer chief minister and Congress leader Narayan Rane has categorically denied that either he or any of his family members held accounts in any foreign bank.

Reacting to a media report that his wife Neelam and son,

HE exit polls in Delhi do not seem to have scared the BJP. Men behind these polls have been screaming for the past few days that the BJP does not have a ghost of a chance and that the AAP is all set to win by a street.

The AAP has also held celebrations. In all probability it will win, but it is not 100 per cent certain. That’s what the BJP leaders say now. To form the government the number required is 36.

There are 70 seats. The BJP now says an internal study which it has made shows it will win 34 seats. And if the Congress wins just two seats, the AAP cannot form the government.

In the last Delhi assembly elections, the AAP and the BJP had done well.

Both, however, did not have the magic number to form the government. Finally, the AAP came to power when the Congress party extended support to it. The question of the Congress supporting either the BJP or the AAP does not arise now. The Congress has said it will not go to the rescue of either the BJP or the AAP. HE only good thing Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did in her repressive rule during the Emergency was to include the words, secularism and socialism, in the preamble of the Constitution. Morarji Desai who succeeded her had all the changes she made in the Constitution deleted, but retained the amendment to the preamble.

The Jana Sangh, the earlier image of the BJP that had merged with the Janata Party, raised no objection. Both L.K. Advani and Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Jana Sangh stalwarts who had joined the Janata, were among the enthusiastic leaders to retain the words of secularism and socialism in the preamble.

It has been apparent that the omission of the two words from an advertisement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should not be construed as the ‘real’ intention of the government. The ministry has admitted its mistake. The matter should have ended there and then.

But the situation has kept the controversy alive by BJP chief Amit Shah. He has said at a press conference that the old preamble is the real one. However, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley has stated that what held the field was the new version of the preamble which omits the mention of socialism and secularism.

Confusion confounded The confusion has been confounded by Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who stated that the omission of words, secularism and socialism, gives an opportunity to debate the matter all over again. It is a pity that the Law Minister should say so without realizing the sanctity of the Constitution. That a liberal person like him should say it is all the more reprehensible. The matter was debated fully when the two words were included.

The only inference one can draw from this episode is that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which guides the party, wants the words “secularism and socialism” dropped. For them, at least the word ‘secularism’ is an anathema. Because of the countrywide furore the BJP has not pursued the matter. Maybe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stayed silent in public, advised the party that the country was not yet ready to jettison secularism and socialism. The RSS probably considered it a reverse, not a defeat and will come back to this agenda when the

True, the lessening support of the Congress, which is ideologically secular, has adversely affected secularism. But the party and the ideology are not synonymous.

In fact, secularism has suffered because the Congress deviated from it in action. In its race to grab power, the party pushed ideals into the background.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s commitment to the ideology has never been in doubt, nor was that of her son Rahul Gandhi’s. But there are many state leaders who do not hesitate to take a parochial line for the sake of votes. She is reportedly unhappy but is afraid of taking action against them because their exit from the Congress may hit the party in a way which may be fatal.

The celebrity roast, which is first of its kind in India, featured a panelist of AIB members with filmmaker Karan Johar taking over the role of 'roast master' to grill

'Gunday' stars Ranveer and Arjun on their professional and personal lives. The show became a rage on YouTube receiving a record number of hits.

Some Christian organisations protested against remarks made on the show pertaining to Jesus and the church.The Archdiocese of Bombay, posted on its Facebook page that Bishop Gracias has accepted AIB's apology.

"The members of the All India Bakchod Comedy Company met with Agnelo Gracias, Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay and tendered an unconditional apology.

"Bishop Agnelo Gracias on behalf of the Archdiocese of Bombay accepted the unconditional apology and in the spirit of understanding and reconciliation stated that the Archdiocese accepts the AIB apology and considers this matter closed," the Facebook page of Archdiocese of Bombay read. Boil two carrots and mash them once they cool down. Mix the carrot mash with 1 tsp of lime juice and 2 tbsp of honey. Apply this over your face and let it sit for around 30 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. n You can combine the benefits of carrots and potatoes by using this face mask — mix 1 mashed carrot together with 1 mashed potato. Avoid using this mask if you have oily skin. n For a natural dry skin remedy, grate a carrot into thin slivers and mix it with the scooped out flesh of one avocado. Add 2 tbsp of olive oil and 1 tbsp of epsom salt (which will help exfoliate dead skin) and mix well. Apply this on to your face and let it sit for around 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry your skin. n Give your hair a healthy bounce and shine with this deep conditioning hair mask. Cut a boiled carrot into small cubes and mix it with similarly cut pieces of banana. Add 2 tbsp of yogurt, a few drops of olive oil and 2 tbsp of honey to the mix.

Blend the mixture till it resembles a smooth paste and apply it on to your scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let the mixture sit for an hour. Wash it off with a mild shampoo and make sure that you don’t leave behind any residue.

Method n Cut the carrots into thin, long pieces. n Boil water with some salt and cool it. n Add the cut carrots to the room temperature water. n Mix carrots, red chilli powder, turmeric, mustard powder and salt (if required) in a jar. n Mix all the ingredients well. Add garlic cloves if you like the flavour. n Leave it out in the sun for three days, till the carrots are tender and ready to eat.

Avoid travelling on an empty stomach, as you are more likely to fall sick. Instead, munch on high protein snacks every few hours.

Keep a check Be careful about what food, drinks and alcohol you consume before your journey as well as while travelling. Avoid drinking too much alcohol and eating food that doesn’t suit your body or that makes you feel unusually full. Heavy, spicy and fatty foods will aggravate motion sickness.

Follow stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing.

Excessive smoking and drinking are two common habits that lead to exhaustion. While smoking affects your stamina, drinking can will leave you dehydrated, both of which impact your energy levels. Also, remember to avoid caffeine — it may give you temporary boost of energy, but it will dehydrate you and aggravate your exhaustion.

S

urfSET Fitness is a surf-inspired workout centre that recently set up base in India. And, if you’ve always envied the chiselled physique that surfers sport, SurfSET Fitness is where you should go. To be honest, I have never really surfed, nor have I ever taken a keen interest in this activity. It’s always been the sort of thing that you watch on TV and are amazed by, but don’t actually focus on after a while. The sorry state of the beaches here in Mumbai obviously doesn’t do much to fuel an interest in the sport either. So, when I was making my way to the newly opened SurfSET Fitness, my interest was piqued.

Situated in Santacruz, the fitness centre consists of a single room for workouts, along with a washroom and a shower. The main workout room is simply designed, devoid of any over-the-top, unnecessary décor. As soon as you enter, you are faced by a mirrored wall on your left, with the surfboard equipment pointed towards it. It isn’t hard to decipher the equipment. The best way to describe it is that each piece is an actual surfboard (the kind used by surfers) fixed on top of three stability balls. Most of the workout is performed on the surfboard or alongside it. There were at least a dozen in one room.

India may host meet of India-Pacific nations

India is planning to host the second conclave of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation this year after the one held in Fiji few months back as part of efforts to build ties with countries of these regions. This was stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his congratulatory message to Akilisi Pohiva on his election as the Prime Minister of Tonga.

HMEDABAD/NEW DELHI: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money on Monday decided to widen its probe as new names of Indians with Swiss bank accounts have come up but made it clear that legal action will be taken only after verifying facts.

"Definitely, the scope of investigation will be widened due to the new names. We will have to identify those names and scrutinise them," SIT Chairman Justice (retd) M.B. Shah told PTI in Ahmedabad.

He, however, said legal action can be taken against individuals only after verifying the facts and not just on the basis of news reports.

"SIT will first verify the facts. We can't take action just on the basis of news reports. We will first verify the claims from our side and then take legal action," he said.

He said, as per the reports published on Monday, there are "some old names, which we already have, and there are some new names of account holders."

Meanwhile in Delhi, SIT ViceChairman Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat, after holding a meeting of the high-powered panel, said it "will consider all new cases where there

is evidence of black money."

"If any new names come and whichever way we have authentic information, we will act on it," he said after the over two-hour long meeting where existing cases of this nature were also reviewed.

The new names reported by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) said their records, which were apparently obtained through leaks from a Geneva-based branch of HSBC bank, show that there are 1,668 Indians on it while the number of actionable cases stands at 1,195 after taking into account duplication and some other factors.

Collectively, these accounts had a balance of US $4.1 billion (Rs 25,420 crore) till 2007.

"There are some new names in the ICIJ list. But they are not many.

It is estimated that this new disclosure and few others which are being tracked by tax sleuths for sometime now will lead to obtaining some 100 new names/cases. Whether they are illegal or not will be the work of investigation," official sources privy to the developments in SIT said.

The SIT, which has top officers from various regulatory, investiga-

tive and enforcement agencies onboard, also reviewed during the meeting those black money and foreign account cases of Indians which will get "time barred" by March 31.

"We will complete probe in all (black money) cases which are getting time barred by March 31. We are on the right track," Pasayat said.

Sources said as SIT had already solicited information against Indian black money holders from the public and hence publishing of suspected Indian black money holders in a national daily qualifies to be the "first information" in this regard.

"The agencies will now act and verify." they said.

Sources added that the snoop wings of the Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate and some other agencies have been asked to gather all possible information on the new names reported today and bring it on the table to be discussed by the SIT during its next meeting.

"The new names will be brought under legal action only if there is any evidence against them. Only having names has not helped in the past and it will not help in the future too," they said.

JD(U) expels Manjhi, demands trust vote in 48 hrs

ATNA/NEW DELHI: A defiant Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi was on Monday expelled by JD(U) which accused him of "indiscipline" and demanded that Governor Kesri Nath Tripathi ask him to take a trial of strength in the Assembly within 48 hours.

Party President Sharad Yadav ordered Manjhi's expulsion for "indulging in anti-party activities" ahead of Nitish Kumar's meeting with the Governor to stake claim to form government.

"Party President Sharad Yadav has expelled Manjhi from primary membership of JD(U) for indiscipline. Article 3 of the JD(U) Constitution gives this special power to the party President under which he can appoint or expel anybody," party general secretary K C Tyagi said at a press conference in Delhi.

Calling Manjhi a "betrayer", Yadav said that he had left no other option.

"When the history of betrayal will be written, Manjhi's name will be the first in it. He went to the extent of criticising the decision of party president and said that the latter had no power to call the meeting of the legislature party.

Rohtak murder-cum-rape case: 8 youths arrested

Under attack over handling of the rape-cum-murder case of a mentally challenged woman from Nepal, Haryana police on Monday arrested eight youths here and promised action in case of any lapse by its personnel. The Opposition Congress latched on to the incident, which came to light on February 4, to target the BJP government in the state on the law and order situation, saying it was "yet to wake up from the slumber", and demanded reconstitution of SIT under an IG level officer to go into the horrific incident.

Over 70 monkeys found dead in UP

OVER 70 monkeys were found dead in Khairagarh tehsil in Agra district, police said on Monday.

Carcasses of 31 monkeys were found buried in Saiyyad block on Friday and the remaining carcasses were found from Jagner and Jheejan areas of the tehsil, they said. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Khairagarh Ram Singh Gautam said that post mortem of 27 monkeys revealed that they were poisoned while the other carcasses have been sent for post-mortem.

EW DELHI: In remarks that could fuel a controversy, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday said Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging was both "wrong and badly handled".

"I think the hanging was both wrong & badly handled. Family should have been warned, given a last meeting & body returned," Tharoor said on Twitter responding to a remark on the issue.

Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Monday (February 09, 2015) a net 134.70 points (1.56%) and closed at the 8526 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 8584 points level. It then rose by a few points and registered the day’s high at the 8605 points level at 9.22 a.m. The index then turned into a range bound movement until 2.55 p.m.

It then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 8516 points level at 3.16 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 89 points and closed below the psychologically important 8600 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 40 were losers, while just 10 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Substantial selling was witnessed in capital goods, realty and metal stocks.

In growing use of technology, trading through mobile phones soared nearly three times last year at the National Stock Exchange, while Internet-based trades rose by 52%. As per the latest data compiled by the NSE, the average daily turnover of trades through mobiles stood at Rs 156 crore in 2014, up from Rs 64 crore in 2013. At the same time, Internet-based trading daily average turnover rose to Rs 1,836 crore in 2014, up 52% from Rs 1,206 crore in the preceding year. The number of investors trading through the Internet increased by 17% and through mobiles by 101% last year, NSE said.

Dena Bank Q3 FY 2015 Net Rises 13% To Rs. 76.56 Cr

Dena Bank has posted 13% growth in net profit to Rs 76.5 crore in the third quarter ended December 31, 2014. The public sector bank’s net profit in the same quarter last year stood at Rs 67.8 crore. Total income has increased to Rs 2,867.3 crore for the quarter from Rs 2,662.8 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2013. Gross NPAs as a percentage to total advances rose significantly to 5.61% from 2.96% in the same quarter a year ago. Its net NPAs went up to 3.97% from 2% at the end of December 2013. However, total provisions, excluding for income tax, rose to Rs 241.33 crore as against Rs 382.43 crore in the year-ago period.

SLR Cut Credit Positive For Banks, Says Moody’s

The Reserve Bank decision to reduce the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) is credit positive for banks as it would help them manage liquidity and increase profitability, Moody's Investors Service said yesterday. Last week, RBI reduced SLR, the minimum amount of Government securities (G-secs) that banks have to hold as a% of their deposits, by 50 basis points (bps) to 21.50%. "It is credit positive for banks because it will provide them with greater flexibility to manage liquidity and improve profitability," the international rating agency said in a report here.

Drug major Cipla has inked a joint venture agreement with Morocco-based Societe Marocaine De Cooperation Pharmaceutique (Cooper Pharma) and The Pharmaceutical Institute (PHI) to enhance its position in the African country. Cipla (EU) Ltd, UK, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mumbai-based drug firm, has inked the JV agreement with the Moroccan entities. hough it is pertinent to note that the film industry in India was born in Maharashtra and though it was thanks to a Maharashtrian pioneer, many Maharashtrian artistes are found hesitating to act in Marathi films, in spite of being Maharashtrians who have Marathi as their mother tongue. Till today, it remains an unsolved mystery and very few show the zeal and enthusiasm to serve the Marathi film industry after earning a lot of laurels by working in films in other languages or winning beauty pageants all over the world.

One among the few who has taken pride in being a Maharashtrian and vowed to make her debut in Marathi films with a film is none other than Manasi Moghe, who had won the coveted title of ‘Miss Universe 2013’ and was one of the finalists of ‘Miss Diva’ contest. Though she had a lot of offers in Hindi films, Manasi chose to make her debut in films with 'Bhugadi Mazi Sandli Ga' which is being presented by Von Ryans Entertainment and produced by producer Shyam Singhania under his banner Ticket Films, who says that he too opted to make his bow as a producer with a Marathi film instead of trying his hand at making a film in Bollywood because he is rooted to the soil of Maharashtra.

According to Singhania, the plus point of his film which is being directed

by Mansingh Pawar who is also writing the story, screenplay as well as the dialogues is Nagpur based. Manasi Moghe confesses that it was good that even when she was keen on making her debut with a Marathi film, the offer to make her debut with 'Bugadi Mazi Sandli Ga' landed on her lap and hence she said yes to it without any hesitation because she was glad that she could try her hand at acting in a film which is rooted to the soil and based on Marathi folklore and has a strong and powerful subject and excellent music which is catchy as well as soulful and also boasts of an ensemble cast, with a director like Mansingh Pawar helming it.

She further adds that she had to prepare a lot for the lavni sequences under the eagle eye of choreographer Deepali Vichare who took a lot of pain to make her dance sequences perfect.

Manasi further says, she is thankful to producer Shyam Singhania for giving her a big ticket film. She hopes she will live up to his confidence in the very interesting role of a tamasha artiste falling in love with a rich family scion who is a NRI and a western classical music enthusiast played by Kashyap Parulekar who was a dream to work with, says Manasi.

We hope all of Manasi's dreams come true with the film releasing soon.

he late Govindrao Tembe (1881 1955) was a venerable figure in the field of Hindustani music. He was one of the greatest harmonists who took the art of harmonium playing to a very high level. He was a composer of great merit. About 100 years ago, he composed music for the Balgandharva starrer 'Manapman'. The tunes of the songs were based on thumris and dadras which Tembe had picked up listening to thumri exponents of the caliber of Moujuddin, Gouharjan and Malkajan. The songs sung by the legendary actor singers like Balgandharva and Dinanath Mangeshkar are still hummed by music lovers. Tembe was also an actor who did roles in 'Prabhat' films like 'Ayodhyecha Raja'.

Jagjit Singh’s birth anniv is ‘Ghazal Day’

Singing legends - Anup Jalota, Talat Aziz, Runa Rizvi Sivamani and Surinder Khan performed together on February 8 ’15 at The Westin Garden City, Mumbai in the Ghazal event held in memory of renowned Ghazal artist Jagjit Singh.

Jalota said in the memory of Jagjit Singh that he was a maestro and as playback singing is known by Lata Mangeshkar, cricket by Sachin Tendulkar and Ghazal by Jagjit Singh, he rightly deserves a Bharat Ratna. He further said, “Jagjit Singh ji is still alive in his music and his fans enjoy his music as much as they enjoyed it when he was alive. We wish to make him immortal by celebrating his birth anniversary as a legendary Ghazal night.” Talat Aziz remembered Jagjit Singh as a very friendly and encouraging person who had encouraged him to sing when he was in college and not very confident about singing.

‘Katti Batti’ set to release

The story is about the problems faced by King Visnudevrai of Vaishali kingdom; firstly there is a dispute over the water in the river that is situated at the state's border and the people are attacked by the dacoits but they are defeated and the people were facing water crisis and famine but when the king learns about their problems they are pardoned and they are offered jobs in their army. Later on a chilly day, the queens with her assistants goes to the nearby lake for a bath after which a campfire is lit up in order to warm everyone, nevertheless the queen leaves and fails to extinguish the fire which results in a disaster as the fire spreads rapidly and burns the entire village. When the king learns about the disaster he is quite disturbed and asks the queen to help the villagers by re-establishing the village. Slowly everything returns to normalcy.

Shivam Creations and producer Yuvraj Pawar's ‘Katti Batti’ directed

by Rajendra Pawar is set for release soon. The film is based on the teen problems due to their exposure to various medias and social platforms and how parents should guide them properly in their difficult growing up period. The film stars Ketan Pawar in a pivotal role along with star pair Preetam Bhujbalrao and Prajakta Yadav along with Arun Nalawde, Dr.Vilas Ujawne, Sanjeevani Jadhav, Jayraj Nair, Deepjyoti Naik, etc.

An unusual ad campaign

Songs of yesteryears at NCPA

Timeless Melodies Raga is a presentation based on film songs of yesteryears by singers Vrushali Patil and group. Indian music finds expression through various categories of popular music, some of which enjoy mass appeal. This thematic presentation has been designed to enable uninitiated listeners to enjoy and appreciate the rich raga legacy of Hindustani music by associating a particular raga with a corresponding raga-based film song. The song selection is from the evergreen compositions of celebrated Hindi film music directors who had a penchant for classical music and will include songs immortalised by legendary playback singers. Trained in classical music with Yojana and Shivanand Patil, Vrushali has a master’s degree in Indian music. Experimental Theatre, NCPA, Friday, 6.30 pm.

GOVINDRAO TEMBE’S BOOK RELEASED AMID GREAT FANFARE

Tembe had an analytical mind. He had a keen aesthetic insight and an analytical mind. He wrote his impressions of the musicians he heard and the great masters. Tembe wrote a biography of Jaipur Attrauli gharana founder Alladiya Khan. He also wrote a wonderful book entitled 'Maza Sangeet Vyasang'.

The late C R Kudyadi translated the book into English. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan undertook to publish the book and make the treasure accessible to the English knowing readers. The book was released with fanfare at a special function at the Bhavan's Chowpatty Auditorium.

Elder musician and harmonist Tulsidas Borkar released the book.

Borkar who turned 80 recently and

had interacted with Tembe recalled Tembe's contribution to Hindustani music. He also spoke about Tembe's multi-dimensional personality. Borkar was felicitated on this occasion. Clippings of Tembe's film appearances were screened and his audio clip in which he had played the raga 'Mand' was also played. It was a terrific performance.

Tembe had connections with the Agra gharana. Therefore, Ghulam Hasnain Khan aka Raja Miyan was asked to perform. He sang ragas 'Yaman' and 'Jaijaivanti' with elan.

His loud songs made a good impression. His controlled aggression was welcomed by the audience with applause. Yati Bhagwat on the tabla and Shrinivas Acharya on the harmonium lent superb support.

UMBAI: Forty-time champions Mumbai sneaked into the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament by virtue of their first innings lead in their last Group A league match against holders Karnataka, which ended in a draw here today.

Going into the final day of the four-day game after taking a small but vital 21-run lead over the visitors, Mumbai had one eye on three other games in the same group before advancing as the third best team with a tally of 20 points.

Karnataka, already assured of a berth in the last eight before the start of the game, finished on top of the Group with 33 points, including the one point earned in this match, while Tamil Nadu finished second with 29 points after defeating Baroda by seven wickets in the latter’s backyard.

The result of two other games held concurrently in the group — Madhya Pradesh against Bengal at Indore and Railways against Uttar Pradesh at Delhi — also helped Mumbai’s entry into

the last eight.

The quarterfinals have been scheduled at Lahli, Jaipur, Indore and Cuttack from February 15-19.

Today, Mumbai wanted to make some quick runs and set a target for Karnataka but lost wickets at regular intervals against the double spin attack of off spinner Udit Patel and leg spinner Shreyas Gopal before declaring their second innings at 223 for eight.Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten on 77 (7X4 2X6), while first innings centurion Nikhil Patil scored 48.

It left Mumbai with 39 overs to take all 10 second innings wickets of Karnataka, who needed 245 to win the game outright. The game was drawn with the visitors on 110 for one with Robin Uthappa (44) and Kunal Kapoor (50) at the crease.

EW DELHI: Former Australian pacer Damien Fleming always had India in his final four of the World Cup until they carried their winless run of the Test series into the recent tri-series Down Under.

Australia piled on further misery on the Indians by hammering them in a World Cup warm-up game at Adelaide yesterday.

“Australia, New Zealand, South Africa should go on to make the semis. I had India in the top-four until the tri- series. I don’t see a lot of penetration in their bowling but I thought they had a batting to score big enough that their bowlers could defend. But even that did not happen in the recent one-dayers,” Fleming told PTI expressing his concern for the defending champions.

The cricketer-turned commentator reckons facing two new balls from either end is another worry for India.

There could be a likely scenario where they have to rely on batsmen to win matches as the bowling is not good enough.

“May be these two new balls from each end are a concern for the Indian top order. There is immense potential in batting with the likes of Kohli, Raina, Rohit and Rahane, who I feel has been super impressive on Australian pitches.

“India still got the potential to score big and I think they will have to because I don’t think they would be bowling teams out for 240-250.

Looking back at his glory days, Fleming feels he was fortunate to be part of the winning team in 1999 after ending runners-up against Sri Lanka in the previous edition.

“Winning the World Cup at Lord’s against Pakistan has to be the ultimate highlight of my career. I was fortunate to get a second shot at winning the title, having lost the final three years ago. It is still fresh in the memory that we went down the Lord’s pitch with the trophy, Ricky Ponting sang our song as we had a few beers.”

His “individual highlight” came in the 1996 edition against India at the famous Wankhede, where he took a career-best five for 36 in Australia’s 16-run win over the co-hosts.

Malinga says he will be fit for World Cup opener W

ELLINGTON: Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga has declared himself fit to play against New Zealand in the opening match of the Cricket World Cup on Saturday.

An ankle injury prevented Malinga from playing in Sri Lanka’s seven-match one-day series against New Zealand in the lead-up to the world tournament but he told reporters Sunday he is ready to return.

Malinga is likely to play in Sri Lanka’s World Cup warm-up matches against South Africa in Christchurch on Monday and Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said Malinga was “back to full fitness. He’s doing everything 100 percent, he’ll be 100 percent for the games.”

Malinga was less emphatic, saying “I’m getting used to the pain be-

cause I really want to play in this World Cup. If there’s pain, it doesn’t matter. I want to play. ... I’m not sure of the pace and how that’s going, but I’ve got good rhythm and a good run up.”

Malinga has been described as the best death bowler in world cricket and his return substantially strengthens Sri Lanka, who were beaten 4-2 in the series against New Zealand. Mathews said “Lasith has the X-factor” which could swing the World Cup opener in Sri Lanka’s favor.

Malinga said he wasn’t concerned that Sri Lanka was investing so much hope in his return.

“Honestly, I don’t know what the pressure means,” he said. “I’m used to all the pressure situations. I have a free mindset and I just want to do what I can do.”

AIRO: At least 22 people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and Egyptian soccer fans who were trying to force their way into a stadium here for a match, in one of the deadliest game-related incidents in the soccer-crazy country.

The Ministry of Interior said the incident took place outside the Air Defence Stadium in Cairo ahead of a match between Egyptian Premier League clubs Zamalek and ENPPI. The clashes started when police used tear gas to disperse members of the Ultras White Knights fan group in front of the stadium, a few hours before Zamalek played ENPPI in a top-of-the-table clash.

The reports said supporters of Zamalek, known as Ultras White Knights, tried to storm into the match without tickets.

Most of the dead were suffocated to death after police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, doctors and witnesses said.

At least 22 had died in the clashes, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Commonwealth and Asian Games medallist Deepika Kumari steered Jhakhand to two team gold medals in the recurve archery events but stunningly missed out on an individual podium finish even as the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) continued to stay on course for a hat-trick of overall titles on the eighth day of competitions in the 35th National Games here today.

SSCB were perched firmly at the top in overall medal standings with a total of 78 — 48 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze. Maharashtra remained second on account of lesser gold medals with a total tally of 91 (27 gold, 37 silver and 27 bronze), followed by Haryana (27 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze).

At the archery arena in Kochi, the action concluded with the recurve events in which Jharkhand swept the women’s competition, winning three gold medals (women’s team, mixed team and individual).

Jharkhand, spearheaded by Deepika, beat Manipur, which featured veteran Bombayla Devi among others, in both the women’s team and mixed team finals to emerge on top.

The individual gold was brought in by Laxmi Rani Majhi, who sailed past Satbir Kaur Saini of Assam 7-3 in the summit clash. Deepika, a former world number one, finished fourth in the individual event after losing the bronze medal playoff 2-6 to Uttar Pradesh archer Seema Verma. The mixed team and the women’s team bronze went to Bengal, featuring the likes of seasoned Dola Banerjee. The eastern state beat Assam in both the playoffs.

State-run news agency MENA said at least 25 were injured.

The match went ahead despite the deadly clashes but Zamalek’s full-back Omar Gaber, a favourite figure among the ultras, withdrew in support of the fans.

There are doubts over whether the league competition will resume this season after it was postponed for an indefinite period.

Egypt has curbed the number of people allowed into football matches since a riot at a stadium in Port Said where more than 70 people were killed in a similar incident after a game in February 2012.

In athletics, which began today, favourites and hosts Kerala suffered a setback on the very first day when star long jumper Ranjith Maheshwary failed to make the finals after being disqualified for false starts in the qualifying round this morning.

Elsewhere, SSCB were the dominant force in men’s triathlon, walking away with both the individual as well as the team gold medals. Minachandra won the individual gold before teaming up with Dilip and Gurudatt to finish on top in the team competition.

hesh respectively, while Goa (Mani Singh, Bishworjit Singh and Dhiraj) and Manipur (Mahesh, Sushil Singh and Dewanjit Singh) took the second and third spot in the team final.

The women’s triathlon was expectedly swept by Gujarat’s Pooja Chaurushi, the first Indian to win an international triathlon championship — the South Asian Championships in 2014. She won the individual gold, before combing with Pallavi and Pragnya to nab the team gold as well.

In wushu, SSCB’s Sajan Lama notched up the men’s Taolu (Nanquan) gold with 9.26 points, followed by Manipur’s Punshiba Mayangallambam (9.03 points).

Jharkhand’s Deepak Bahadur (7.73) finished a distant third.
