The lawyer, identified as Janhvi Gadkar (35), appeared to have been drunk at the time of accident, they said, adding that she was arrested by RCF police and a local court remanded her in three-day police custody. Salim was seated in the front besides Sayyad, while his wife Hafeeza (45), daughters – Sabiya (22) and Salma (19) and son Nauman (17), live near Null Bazaar. “They wanted to celebrate Nouman’s SSC performance in the exams and decided to go to their favourite dhabha near Bhiwandi. The driver, Sayyad, was a family friend and my uncle called him whenever he wanted to travel. They had left around 7:30 p.m. and were coming back in the cab when the accident took place,” said Salim’s nephew, Imran. Speaking to the ADC, API Bharat Sendge of the RCF police station said the accused was produced before the Kurla Court on Tuesday. Further probe is on.

lmost after one week, the Juhu police has claimed to have solved the kidnapping and robbery case of a city-based doctor after arresting an accused in the case from Masjid Bunder area on Monday, while another is absconding. On Monday last week, the complainant in the case, Dr Prateek Agarwal was on his way to his residence after filling petrol in his car from Lotus petrol pump in Oshiwara. When he stopped the car at the signal, two unidentified miscreants suddenly forcefully entered his car and began threatening him saying they are Chhota Rajan gang members. The complainant was in shock as the kidnappers claiming that they will shoot him if he does not obey their orders. After reaching near the Kafe Azmi

Park in Juhu, both kidnappers tied the doctor up and took away Rs 10,000 cash and two ATM cards and fled from the car. Dr Agarwal then managed to untie his hands and went to the Juhu police station and lodged a FIR against the two thieves. “On the basis of description given by Dr Agarwal about the robbers, we launched a manhunt and with the help of our reliable information we came to know that one of the two thieves is in Masjid Bunder locality, so we laid a trap and nabbed him. He later identified himself as Shivpal Singh (35). Accused Singh hails from Uttar Pradesh and had recently landed in the city. He confessed to the crime and during interrogation he revealed that, they needed quick money due to which they committed the crime. We are looking for his accomplice, police said.

n a shocking incident, a 21-yearold youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his Versova residence on Tuesday morning after his best friend came to know he is having an affair with his minor sister and had assaulted him. During investigation, police learnt that the deceased, Sachin Shinde was having an affair with his best friend’s 16-year-old sister and his friend assaulted him after he found a selfie of Shinde and his sister in his mobile phone. After a heated argument, Shinde was upset and he consumed alcohol before hanging himself in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to the police sources, deceased Shinde was staying in Siddharth Nagar slums in Versova, Andheri (west) along with his younger sister and mother. Shinde used to work as a house help and since the last two months he was unemployed.

Shinde’s friend Akash Gavas was staying at his place since past two months and both were very good friends. Akash’s sister lives in Adarsh Nagar area in Oshiwara along with her parents. Shinde and Akash’s sister fell in love few months ago and started dating, said a police officer. Both went to Aksa beach on Monday and Shinde clicked a selfie with her on his mobile phone. Akash took Shinde’s mobile to call someone and he saw his sister‘s photo with Shinde. He got angry and confronted him. Shinde revealed that he loved his sister and there was a fight. In fit of rage Akash assaulted Shinde. “During investigation we found that Shinde left home after the fight and consumed alcohol. He might have felt guilty so he hung himself,” said Ravindra Pawar, senior inspector at Versova police station. The incident came to light after locals noticed Shinde’s body hanging from the tree and informed the police. “We are waiting for the post mortem report. We are questioning some of Shinde’s friends to find out if there is any other reason behind his suicide; on the basis of primary information we have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case and we are investigating,” said Pawar.

World is a stage FOR them the world itself is the stage. They appear to live on the stage day and night. Minor faces are all made up – all the time. The face they show on the stage and off it is the same. They hide their faces behind carefully applied paint. At 70, the hair is as black as a crow. Not a single grey hair. A lot of time is consumed changing the colour. Some do not colour the hair. That is too time-consuming and a bit boring. So they use artificial hair which remains stuck the head. And then there are wrinkles on the face to be concealed. Lot of patience is required to do the work. Wrinkles have to be treated in a different ways some of then are like deep furrows which have to be filled up. The wrinkles that appear on the cheek are different from those on the forehead. They require different from those on the forehead. They require different kinds of treatment. Wrinkles reveal embarrassingly one's age. They have got to be hidden. With the kind of make-up skills available today, it is easy to remove the wrinkles. The skin of the face is pulled and stitched up. The work by skin surgeon can be terrible sometimes. See what happened to Sharad Pawar. After surgery, his

face looked terrible. He could not even speak properly. After all, he is a politician. He has to keep contact with people. He finally had one more surgery. A woman wants to remain on the stage forever has to completely erase her eyebrows. I still remember a girl I knew who in an early money meeting shocked me since she had not yet fixed the artificial eyebrows. If you kiss a girl or the eyes, you will be contacting the fixed eyebrow which is available in a fashion shop. What is evident is there are some persons who will do everything possible to hide their

age. There are some stage actress and actors who are constantly want to keep on their stage make-up even when they walk off the stage.

Friends now with 'Butcher of Gujarat'

WHILE PM Narendra Modi was carrying on BJP's poll campaign some time back, a furious Mamata Banerjee described him as 'Butcher of Gujarat'. She angrily said then she would have no truck with him, that her party would stay away from BJP. During the last couple of weeks, Mamata is getting a chance to know the Prime Minister. He was in Kolkata for an industrial campaign. And for the last two days she has been with him in Bangladesh, participating in the bilateral talks

PM Narendra Modi with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Dhaka.

between the two countries. On camera, she appears to be a little softer towards Modi. She must have forgotten about what she said. She was happy her state got an opportunity to have useful talks with Bangladeshi's government leaders.

It looks as though she was changing – slowly – her opinion about Modi. That's what NaMo is perhaps quietly hoping. His party BJP has a problem in getting the Land Bill passed in Rajya Sabha. Mamata can help him get the majority.

Was Maggi safe?

HOW is it that in some Maggi samples tested in the country there is no presence of lead or MSG? This is what has made the global Nestle CEO of Maggi say, “Our product is safe”. As is well-known in the business world there is cut-throat competition. Companies grab a chance to show the rival company's product as dangerous, poisonous etc. Maggi has been there for over 30 years. It is being sold in over 137 countries. 74 per cent of its business is in India. Naturally, Nestle does not want to lose this lucrative business. After coming to India, the CEO has taken several damage control measures but nothing worked. It would be useful to find out who cleared the project? Has no test done? Maybe if properly investigated before giving approval, the problem might not have arisen. The Food & Drug

Paul Bulke, Global CEO, Nestle

Administration (FDA) in states must be careful while products either by a foreign or Indian company is okayed. In some of the samples which have been tested, a little lead has been found. This is okay, it was stated. When lead is dangerous, why even the smallest quality should be permitted?

There is always the hazard of waterborne diseases being spread during the season, specially in slum areas. Regarding the same issue, Shiv Sena Corporator Trushna Vishwasrao has put forward a proposal in front of the Standing Committee. Generally, pipes are set up on the sides of the road, but around the slum areas the pipes are present around the nallas and right beside gutters. The line up of contestants for the post of MCA vice president is like Congress and Shiv Sena pitted against the BJP and both being challenged by the Republican Party of India – Athawale (RPI-A). Yesterday, the Sena decided to support the candidature of Vijay Patil (Congress) against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar for the post of president. That prompted a livid Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar to file his nomination papers accusing the Sena of betrayal. In a statement issued here, he said that the Sena

It is suggested that new pipelines be set up by the BMC in by 'Bunch of Connections' method. Due to minimal space available around the slums, a lot of pipelines and other services including drainage pipes, gas pipes, telephone

ddressing media at the end of Rail Yatri Pakwada on Tuesday, the Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced that a white book containing the problems of rail commuters of Mumbai region is being prepared by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) with the consultation of experts. The white book, which is expected to be released by the end of next month, will be made public and people will be allowed to give in their suggestions for improving rail services in the city. Elaborating further that a concrete plan for the urban transportation will become a key solution, Prabhu said, “With the MRVC preparing the white book, it is important to focus on seamless commuting, wherein the commuter does not have to take different tickets for public transportation. It could all be done by using

I have personally spoken to the official of the World Bank and we intend to start the project really soon,” the minister said. When asked about the Churchgate-Virar corridor and the MMRDA's interest in the metro corridor, Prabhat Sahai, Chairman and Managing Director, MRVC, said, “We had discussion with the MMRDA and they have suggested us to discuss about the Andheri to Virar corridor, and we are working about it and will soon decide the action plan of the corridor.”

ore than 25 former employees of Meru Cab working as customer care executive protested against the company on Tuesday alleging that the company has not paid their salaries from last three months and they have also not received their incentives. The employees also alleged that they have audio-recordings of the Branch Manager and Manager, who promised them to give their salaries and incentives after resigning from the company. Annu Gowda, ex-employee of Meru Cab spoke to the ADC and expressed her ordeal. “We work like dogs and still don't get our salary. Another former employee of Meru Can Fahim Aibani said, “We worked very hard but we didn't get our money. Whenever we approach the management they have put a stay on our salary without any reason. In case of emergency, don’t dial MBMC! By Suresh Golani

nicipal Corporation’s his rainy season, if you (MBMC) disaster manageface an emergency don't ment cell for help. Reason: rely on Mira-Bhayandar Mu- The civic body's much hyped 24x7 Emergency Operation Center (EOC) not only lacks a telephone connection but it also paints a sordid picture of utter neglect reflecting the apathy of the civic administration. A prying look at the basics at the EOC which operates from a 10x15 sq.ft. makeshift structure on the ground floor of its main administrative building in Bhayandar (West), reveals that disaster management is not a priority on MBMC’s agenda. While walls have developed gaping cracks, fire-fighting and other life saving equipment lie on the floor like a heap of trash. Although civic personnel have been deputed to attend complaints and coordinate emergency cases, there is not a single telephone line at the unit threatening its very existence. Leave aside provision of wireless communication sets, a landline number displayed on one of the boards inside the EOC is also defunct for a long time. It should be noted

T

that waking up to the needs for an unified command unit to tackle disaster situations like terror strikes, floods and fires in a coordinated manner, the state government had extended financial aid to local self governing (LSG) bodies to set up a state-ofthe-art helpline cell to be operated throughout the year. Despite being a recipient of Rs. 50 lakh fund in April 2013, the MBMC has been dragging its feet on the issue for the past two years. This despite of the fact that a sprawling 3,000 sq.ft amenity acquired space in Mira Road has been earmarked for the project. Admitting the folly of his subordinates, civic chief Achyut Hange said, “I will ensure that a full fledged computerised unit, equipped with advanced software, high-tech communication and relaying systems is set up in Mira Road within a week's time.” As per the guidelines of the National Disaster Management Authority, it is mandatory for Local Self Governing bodies to develop such a disaster management system.

72 Dumpers, 4 JCBs, 500 brass sand worth Rs.60 lakh seized at Ghodbunder creek

By Suresh Golani

C

racking a whip against the notorious sand mafia in Thane district, officials from the revenue department teamed up with the police to crackdown on illegal sand dredging activities that were being carried out at Ghodbunder creek on Tuesday afternoon. The entire operation was carried out under the supervision of District Collector Ashwini Joshi. Apart from confiscating nearly 500 brass sand which equals to the sum of more than Rs.60 lakh, officials seized 72 dumpers, four Thane District Collector Ashwini Joshi with the team of revenue officials and police at the Ghodbunder creek.

crane-lifters, four JCBs and other equipment used for sand mining. While four people have been arrested in this context, the district authorities have sealed the region to prevent further exploitation. Revenue officials Kaustabh Divegaonkar, Dinesh Paithankar, Pandrinath Bhoir, Vasant Choudhary accompanied by police officials

SDP Suhas Bawache and Senior PI Anil Kadam, were part of the raiding team. Despite a judicial ban on sand mining activities, it is the business as usual for the powerful sand mafia in Thane district, as plundering natural resources by extracting huge quantities of sand continues unabated in the sand rich spots especially the Ghodbunder creek.

TMC launches online service to help cancer patients By Abhishek Vissapragada

T

ata Memorial Centre (TMC) at Parel along with Navya Network has launched an online consultation service called 'TMC Online' on Tuesday. The service will cater to cancer patients from India and around the world. When 10-year-old Aditya from Bangalore complained of a severe back pain in October 2013, his father Ganesh got worried about his son's health. “At first when the doctor tested my son's condition, he said it was normal and might have happened due to a fall that my son had before,” said Ganesh. But Aditya complained again about the pain in October 2014 and again Ganesh was told that there was no major problem. It was only in last March that Aditya's back pain extended to his left thigh and he couldn't stand for longer durations. “At that time Aditya's exams were going on at that time. Slowly the pain got so severe that he was not able to stand even for short periods. An MRI scan, in April, revealed that my son had neurofibroma, a rare pediatric tumor,” said Ganesh. Aditya had undergone a surgery in Bangalore in the same month. He also under-

Dr. Rajendra Badwe during the launch of the online service TMC Online went a chemotherapy after 4 pathologists that had consulted him couldn't come to an agreement about his final diagnosis. “At this time I wondered whether my son was getting the right treatment. One of my friends then recommended that I go to TMC Online for better insight,” said Ganesh. Ganesh submitted all reports on May 14 wherein Navya Network structured and compiled Aditya's health report properly and gave it to 2 experts for medical consultation. “By May 20, I received an email about which chemotherapy my son should undergo and the accurate treatment that he should get. My son was going to undergo another chemotherapy on May 21 and this report helped

us a lot,” said Ganesh, whose son will be undergoing a third chemotherapy and is recovering well. TMC Online initially started at May 2014 as a pilot project dealing with breast cancer patients. “Based on word of mouth publicity, the online service provided evidence based medical consultations and recommendations to the patients not only from India but from around the world too,” said Gitika Srivastava, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Navya Network. Srivastava said while the consultation service demands Rs. 5,000 for one time pay service to each patient, it also provides free service to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) patients. “Our project is being

funded by the Tata Trust and it is a self funded project. We would like to become a profitable service too but we won't ignore the calls of BPL patients who need this service,” said Srivastava. With 2,200 patients registered with TMC Online since it began, Dr. Rajendra Badwe who is the Director of Tata Memorial Centre hopes that this service can be available for more cancer patients who can receive expert's advice from doctors of Tata Memorial Hospital. “We would also deal with the differences any local doctors have directly. This service also saves time and money for patients who travel from a long distance to receive treatment here,” said Dr. Badwe. Dr. Badwe hopes that with data banks of medical consultations being undertaken, patients will be able to receive immediate advice about how to deal with their conditions. “Once the system is in place to deal with them, I hope patients can receive accurate treatment immediately and it also helps spread knowledge quickly,” said Dr. Badwe. The service is accessible through tmc.gov.in navyanetwork.com

Bihar elections could be a game changer for Modi govt

DESPATCH & COURIER

Ponder awhile... “The one who adapts his policy to the times prospers, and likewise that the one whose policy clashes with the demands of the times does not.” — Niccolo Machiavelli

Elected govt sidelined? ECENT weird developments in R Delhi raise the question regarding the need for holding an assembly election every five years. Elected representatives are not governing Delhi. They do not have the right to appoint or transfer babus, they have to accept the choice by the governor with regard to the appointment of the chief secretary. The Delhi government, an elected body, cannot appoint the ACB. The five members of police brought from Bihar by the AAP government can be dismissed by the governor. The governor appears to have the right to rule Delhi even if there is an elected government. In any other state, the governor talks over only when the majority party in the assembly fails in a floor test. The pertinent question is why must an election be held in Delhi? If a party which gets the mandate to rule from the electorate is not allowed to rule, why should there be an election at all? The governor says he does everything as per the provisions in the Constitution. The government’s chief minister also says he is following the Constitution. The dispute, of course, will finally be decided by the court. In the meanwhile, chaos reins in Delhi. If the Centre waits to rule in Delhi, it must come up with an honest solution: Declare Delhi as a Union Territory. It will then have no problem about dealing with defiance and challenges of an elected government.

R

AHUL GANDHI has made his first political move in his new aggressive, confident avatar by pressuring Lalu Prasad Yadav and his mother Sonia Gandhi into endorsing Nitish Kumar as the chief ministerial face of the anti-BJP front taking shape for the forthcoming Bihar assembly elections. It’s a coup of sorts because both are difficult nuts to crack. Lalu’s animosity towards Nitish is well known. While he understood the immense electoral benefits of joining hands with his frenemy, his ego simply wouldn’t allow him to accept a back seat role with Nitish as the driver of the alliance. Sonia has always had a soft corner for Lalu because he was the first non-Congress leader to dismiss her Italian origin and embrace her as Indian. Before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul tried hard to persuade his mother to agree to ally with Nitish’s JD(U) but she refused. Eventually, the Congress went with Lalu and won just two seats to Lalu’s four. It is significant then that both caved into Rahul’s pressure to accept Nitish’s leadership. Rahul even displayed shrewd political acumen in the manner in which he forced their hands. First, he met with Nitish and allowed the news to reach the media. Then, he met with the Congress Bihar unit chief, Ashok Chaudhry, and told him in clear terms that he should announce Nitish as the party choice for CM. But before Chaudhry was given the signal to go public, Rahul spoke to his mother and got her on board. Then, Chaudhry had a proforma meeting with Sonia after which he came out and made the dramatic announcement endorsing Nitish. It is this announcement that set the ball rolling for the final stamp of approval from Lalu. The RJD boss was apparently quite rattled by this public show of support for Nitish. He made several frantic phone calls to Congress leaders, even sought an appointment with Sonia, but the lady turned a cold shoulder to him for the first time in their decadelong friendship. With his children also mounting pressure on him and his party threatening to revolt if he didn’t agree to the terms of engagement with the fledgling anti-BJP-front, Lalu was pretty much cornered. It is, of course, going to be difficult to sort out the seat-sharing and finalise the names of candidates. Expect Lalu to be obstinate at every turn. But the die has been cast. It’s going to be a humdinger of a contest in Bihar

International Yoga Day: Why Baba Ramdev is left out?

A

S the entire government machinery gears up to celebrate International Yoga Day on the giant scale that Narendra Modi wants, political circles are wondering why Baba Ramdev doesn’t figure anywhere. Not only is Ramdev one of the best known yoga gurus in

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath the country -- thanks to television -- he is also supposed to be a die-hard supporter of the Modi government and said to be close to the RSS. Yet, despite his saffron connections, he seems to be missing from all the action. Sources say that instead of Ramdev, the government has turned to Modi’s Bengalurubased yoga therapist H.R. Nagendra for advice. The Ministry of Ayush has been consulting him to draw up a 35-minute regimen that will showcase the best of yoga and can also be performed like a mass gymnastics drill. Ramdev has been left out of the training sessions too. The Morarji Desai Yoga Foundation in the Capital has been asked to provide yoga teachers to give a crash course in yoga to government employees so that they can participate in the mega event on June 21. Ramdev has been left twiddling his thumbs. He’s been allowed to make only a small contribution to the grand show. He will be sending a group of around 1,000 persons to Rajpath to participate in the yoga session. That’s quite a come down for a yoga guru who

believes that he is the power behind Modi’s throne.

With Ajit Doval as chief, the NSA is flying high

T

HE Modi government has made it clear that it doesn’t believe in post-retirement sinecures for babus, unlike the Manmohan Singh government which re-employed virtually every senior bureaucrat who retired. But there are exceptions to every rule and the exceptions underline the influence of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in the present dispensation. So far, Modi has appointed three retired government officials. All are former IB officials and all have been appointed to posts in the security establishment. Former RAW chief Alok Joshi heads the National Technical Research Organisation. Former IB special director R.N. Ravi was pulled in to chair the Joint Intelligence Committee. The latest appointment is that of recently retired IB chief Asif Ibrahim who has been made special envoy for West Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Doval’s hand is obvious in three appointments. Joshi and Ibrahim have been his juniors when Doval was IB chief. They reported to him when he was made National Security Advisor by Modi. Ravi, like Doval, is an IPS officer of the Kerala cadre. Clearly, the NSA is flying high.

Filmy funda at the Rashtrapati Bhavan

O

NE of the first things President Pranab Mukherjee did on his return from Sweden was to watch the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Piku. The film was shown at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in-house theatre on Sunday. Although Mukherjee is not much of a Hindi film buff, his daughter Sharmistha was keen that he see the movie. She has seen it and loved it. BJP minister fromWest Bengal Babul Supriyo was put in charge of organising the show. But the cherry on the icing was Amitabh Bachchan. He graciously agreed to be present at the Rashtrapati Bhavan showing. Mukherjee also invited someone who is an avid Hindi film buff; L.K. Advani. The BJP patriarch had already seen the film but he enjoyed it so much that he was more than happy to see it again with the President.

Path of resignation: Neither good to themselves, nor to another T

HERE are some who take the path of resignation, neither doing good to themselves nor to another. It is a kind of attitude they have taken to say, 'It will come from somewhere. Somebody will do it. If I am hungry somebody will come and feed me' – or, 'If another person is in need, somebody will come and help him'. Their wish is inactive, they do not let their wish become a will, they remain where they are, they are passive. No doubt, an intelligent passiveness and resignation can also bring about a wonderful result, but many of these people do it unintelligently. The quality of the saints is to be resigned to all that comes – but then they do not even form a wish. They take all that comes, flowers or thorns; everything that comes, they take it. They look into thorns and see that they are flowers. With praise and with blame they are contented. They are contented with rise and fall; they take all that comes, they take life as it is. That is the intel-

ligent way of doing it. The unintelligent way is to say of anything that is difficult, 'Somebody will come and do it'. This is a kind of laziness. They may think it is passiveness, but it is laziness to think, if one has to do something, 'Somebody will come who will do it'. In India, it is told that a man was lying

the spirit of the helpless. Although both become resigned, the latter is not truly resigned: he would like to have the cherry in his mouth, but another person must give it to him. The saint does not care if he eats it or if he does not eat it; it is just the same to him. In that case it is allowable. Then there are others who are over-anxious for their wish to come true; it destroys their wish because the strength, the pressure they put upon their wish is too great. It is just like under a cherry tree and some ripe cherries guarding a plant against the sun and against were falling near him. But he was just lying water; if one guards the plant against the very there. A man came from a distance to whom things that should help it to grow, then it canhe called out, 'Please come here, will you not grow. It is the same with the wish; if a perplease put this cherry in my mouth?' There son says, 'This is my wish and it must come are many to be found like this who out of a true, no one must think about it, no one must feeling of helplessness, of laziness, give in, look at it', he is always afraid that perhaps this who have no enthusiasm, no courage. wish will not come true. LETTERS Mumbai, fire and BMC’s tall claims

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 2015

MEDIA reports suggest that Mumbai Fire Brigade is not prepared to save the birds trapped on the trees because the Brigade has more important duties like life saving of the people trapped in fire or in a collapsed building. The Brigade is right, but the occasions of the building on fire or the collapse, are not very frequent and regular. Similarly the trapping of a bird is also rare at least, in the same area. Therefore, the higher authorities of the valued Fire Brigade are requested to revise this decision at the earliest and oblige the birds too.

HIGH-RISE residential buildings in Mumbai are ill-equipped in terms of fire safety measures adopted by the societies. Fire officials claim that residential societies are not keen on coming forward for the fire audit, and are also ill-informed about the use of fire safety equipment. Officials say residents and building owners have a casual attitude in ensuring a fool-proof mechanism of fire safety. Despite recent instances of fire in highrises, most buildings are yet to go for audits. Most either do not have the necessary fire-fighting equipment or have non-functional ones. Few society managing committees approach the audit officer for a survey carried out by the fire department. People take interest only when there is a fire either in their building or in their neighbour-

In 2012, Mumbai Fire Brigade had announced that 136 fire officers will be inducted and trained especially for high-rise fire safety inspection; a special cell was to be set up for this purpose. However, due to poor response from the residential and commercial building management, the fire brigade also expressed helplessness. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Just a few weeks after being appointed to her present position, it became evident that the lady was a misfit to head the HRD ministry (or any other ministry); and that she owed her exalted position entirely due to the support of the allpowerful PM. I suspect that even Modi began to realise that Irani was out of her depth, which was why she was removed from the BJP's decision making body some months ago. Alas! the very first pre-monsoon rains ranging from 2-4 mm only played havoc in certain areas like Dadar and Matunga as the ADC pics reveal the ankle deep water through which the hapless Mumbaikars are wading. In fact this year the efforts in cleaning up the clogged drains, nulllahs the other water bodies like the Mithi river etc. have not been cleaned like the past few years thereby causing it to be seriously worrisome for the citizens. Any spell of heavy rains would certainly cause panic for this city.

However, Djokovic is young and a fighter to the core and I am sure he would come better prepared next year to add the only trophy missing from his shelf. Kudos to World No 1 Serena Williams for winning the French Open and proving her supremacy in women's tennis. She is the greatest women's player of all time and without doubt the undisputed Queen of world tennis. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

This is Warwinka's first French Open title. At 30 he is the oldest Champion in Paris since Andres Gomes in 1990. Winning a clay court final in French open is not so easy. Pete Sampras having 14 grand slam title in his illustrious career could not win a single French Open Championship. Even Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker could not achieve a win in French open in their long career Similarly, Ivan Lendl was success-

ful in men's circuit singles matches but could not win a single time in Wimbledon and that prompted him saying that 'grass is for cows'. The Swiss player got his second grand slam title in 2015 and he upstaged World number one, Novak Djokovic as the Serb was faltered to deceive in a crucial encounter. Aggressive play of Warwinka saw him demolishing the Djokovic in a devastating form which saw him going from strength to strength. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

Investigators said that an FIR was registered and the Law Minister was arrested after nearly a month-long investigation established that the documents he submitted in 2011 to register with the Bar Council of Delhi were fake. The arrest came in the midst of a raging battle between the AAP government and Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over the powers of the city government, giving a new political twist to the murky fight. Parallely, the AAP government and Jung continued their fight over the appoinment of ACB chief and an official who issued the order appointing Delhi Police Joint Commissioner M K Meena to the probe agency. Stung by the arrest, AAP unleashed a stinging attack on the Modi government accusing it of political vendetta and creating an "Emergency-like" situation in Delhi to avert the city government's crackdown on corruption. One of the AAP leaders alContinued from pg 1 « Court on Tuesday. "At least 1,300 files of Housing Department alone are missing," public prosecutor Jayesh Yagnik told Justices Abhay Oka and Reveti MohiteDhere, who were hearing a PIL filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar alleging irregularities in allotment of flats under CM's housing quota. This prompted the bench to ask why the government had not informed about the 'missing' files in October 2014, when it had passed an order appointing retired Judge J.A. Patil to probe alleged irregu-

basic fare for autos and taxis. The minimum fare for autos will go up from Rs 17 to Rs 18, while taxi fares would go up from the minimum Rs 21 to Rs 22. The hike will come into effect only after the meters of the over 1.05 lakh autos and over 35,000 taxis in the city

are re-calibrated. The hike was announced following recommendations by the one-man Hakim Committee. The high court approval is necessary as a PIL by consumer rights body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP) has challenged the committee and its findings few years ago.

Government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani on Tuesday mentioned the matter before a division bench of justices N H Patil and S B Shukre which said it would hear the matter on June 11. MGP had on Monday filed a petition seeking a direction to defer the fare hike.

the Bar Council and the Assembly Speaker within 24 hours of the arrest and we will comply with it." During the course of investigation, Tomar was asked to join investigation and after his examination as per the established procedure, he was formally arrested. According to sources, the notice was served to him early in the morning while a police team led by the Hauz Khas SHO reached the MLA's office at Trinagar around 11 AM and asked him to provide some documents related to the probe. "The documents were supposed to be picked up from Tomar's home. However, on the way, Tomar's driver was asked to alight from the vehicle and Tomar was told that he has been detained and being taken to Hauz Khas police station. The police, however, took him to the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) office in Vasant Kunj for security purposes," the sources added. A heavy police contingent was deployed in the area anticipating protest.

leged that the arrest "conspiracy" was hatched in the Union Home Minister's office at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party would not be cowed down but fight back. Home Minister Rajnath Singh rubbished the charge saying his ministry did not order the arrest which Police Commissioner B S Bassi said was done within the purview of law and after following due procedures. Joint Commissioner of Police (South-Eastern Range) R.S. Krishnia said police have followed all rules and guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in "letter and spirit". "Registration number mentioned in Tilak Manjhi Bhagalpur University record has been given in the name of Jitender Singh Tomar in the year 2001, whereas in LLB mark-sheets of first and second year, the registration number has been given during the year 1996 and 1997,"

he added. Bundelkhand University has clarified to Tilak Manjhi University that no such migration certificate has been issued with the relevant number to Jitender Singh Tomar from their University, said Krishnia. Based on the enquiry and the documents and reports obtained from RML Avadh University, Faizabad and Tilak Bhagalpur Manjhi University and other enquiries from officials and ex-officials disclosed a cognisable offence. And accordingly, a case (FIR No. 605/15) under sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC was registered at Hauz Khas police station last night. On AAP charges that the Assembly Speaker was not informed about the arrest, Bhagat said as per law "we are supposed to inform the LG,

CM flat quota scam larities in the allotment of flats under the discretionary housing quota since 1982. To this, the prosecutor said the officers concerned were not aware of the missing files that time. Not satisfied with the answer, the bench said the only way to solve the problem would be to take contempt action against the guilty, reports PTI. The prosecutor further informed the court that 1,200 beneficiaries had surrendered flats on account of irregulari-

ties or in cases of double allotment of houses. Besides, police had taken action against 300 such beneficiaries, he said. "This shows the magnitude of the irregularities," the bench remarked. 1,200 houses are now available to the government for allotment to people, the Judges said adding that they had passed orders on the PIL earlier as the government had not taken any action on the alleged irregularities. Though the probe has not concluded, many beneficiaries have surrendered the flats allotted to them. "This shows that maximum allotments were illegal," the bench said. The prosecutor handed over reports given by the Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development departments to the court for its perusal. On going through the reports, the bench remarked that in some cases the sanction order of the Chief Minister giving houses to beneficiaries was missing although the order of final allotment was in the files. The bench has asked the Secretaries of both the departments to file separate affidavits within two weeks on the missing files, details of flats surrendered by beneficiaries and action taken by police against double allottees of flats. In October 2014, the HC had appointed retired

judge J A Patil to probe the alleged irregularities in the allotment of flats under the Chief Minister's discretionary housing quota since 1982. The PIL alleges that many people got more than one flat under the CM quota by making false declarations. It also says that most beneficiaries are politicians or those who are close to politicians. Justice Patil had been asked to submit his report and recommendations about further action by April 30, 2015. However, the government has not yet handed over all the files to the panel of inquiry. In the meantime, the court asked the government to continue its ongoing action against those who got the flats by filing false affidavits. The judges also asked such beneficiaries to return the flats, or pay up the price if they have sold off the flats. The court ordered that the government must ensure that those who have got multiple flats hand over the possession back to the authorities. The one-man commission has been asked to scrutinise all the applications for flats since 1982, and look for the cases where a single person has got more than one flat. The allotment under the CM's quota has now been stopped following the court's order. Under the scheme, the flats were supposed to be given to freedom fighters, artists and sports persons.

"One one hand, the Prime Minister wants to project himself as the great champion of good governance and Constitutional values while on the other he allows many of his colleagues to make vile statements and foment communal polarisation. "This has already damaged our secular fabric. An atmosphere of fear and foreboding has been deliberately created," she said in her inaugural address to a day-long conference of Congress chief ministers, the first after the party's worst debacle in Lok Sabha polls last year. "There is another aspect of both substance and style that I should mention and this relates to a dangerous duplicitous game that is being played out. "In terms of substance, there are systematic attempts being made to dismantle the edifice of the welfare state built up over the decades by successive Congress governments", she said.

ISRO bags Space Pioneer Award for its Mars mission

B

engaluru: The country's lowcost Mars mission which is in rendezvous with the red Planet for an extended period has been presented with the Space Pioneer award for the year 2015 by the US' National Space Society. Space Pioneer award for the year 2015 was presented to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the Science and Engineering category during the 34th Annual International Space Development Conference held at Toronto in Canada during May 20-24, 2015, city-headquartered ISRO said on its website. It said the National Space Society (NSS) of USA presented the award in recognition of ISRO's efforts in accomplishing Mars Mission in its very first attempt. Scripting space history, India on September 24, 2014 successfully placed its low-cost Mars spacecraft in orbit around the red planet in its very first attempt, breaking into an elite club of three -- US, Russia and Europe who have successfully undertaken missions to Mars or its orbit. The ISRO spacecraft was launched on its nine-month-long odyssey on a homegrown PSLV rocket from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on November 5, 2013 and had escaped the earth's gravitational field on December 1. Modi’s ‘nuisance’ remarks in Bangladesh ‘unfortunate’: Pak I slamabad: Pakistan Tuesday described as "unfortunate" the remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh where he had accused it of creating "nuisance" and constantly troubling India by promoting terrorism. The "characterisation of bilateral relations by the Indian prime minister as 'nuisance' is unfortunate," Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalillulah said. He said that Pakistan believes in peaceful co-existence and maintaining good neighbourly relations with India. "Pakistan aaye din (constantly) disturbs India, jo naako dum la deta hai (creates nuisance), terrorism ko badhawa (deta hai)...Ki ghatnaayein Prime Minister Narendra Modi

ghatthi rehti hain (promotes terrorism and such incidents keep recurring)," Modi had said on Sunday in his address to Dhaka University during his Bangladesh trip. Recalling that 90,000 Pakistani prisoners of war were in India's captivity during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Modi had said, "if we had a diabolic mindset, we don't know then what decision we would have taken." Khalillulah said that Prime Minister Modi's statements "only confirmed Pakistan's stance on India's negative role against a sovereign neighbouring state." "It was regrettable that the Indian politicians not only indulge in actions that are in violation of the

UN's Charter but also take pride in recalling their interference in the internal affairs of other states," he said. The spokesperson reiterated that the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh are bound not only by the strong bonds of religious affinity but also by the history of their struggle for independence against colonial rule. "Indian attempts to sow seeds of discord between the two brotherly nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh will not succeed," he stressed. Pakistan also called upon the international community to take note of Indian acknowledgement of its interference in East Pakistan - now known as Bangladesh.

yderabad: Amid the cashfor-vote scam triggering bitter wranglings between the ruling parties in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths today searched the residences of TDP MLA Revanth Reddy and two others arrested in connection with the case. As political bitterness soared, as many as 50 FIRs were registered by the Andhra Pradesh Police against Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, based on complaints by TDP workers over alleged illegal tapping of the phones of his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naidu. Adding to the woes of Naidu, YSR Congress, the main opposition in AP, demanded his resignation and accused him of "whipping up regional passions" between the two states born out of bifurcation of the composite Andhra Pradesh state a year back. Three teams of ACB sleuths conducted simultaneous searches at the residences of Reddy, Sebastian

K Chandrasekhar Rao Harry and Uday Simha, all arrested earlier this month, and seized one computer CPU from the MLA's home, ACB Deputy Superintendent Ashok Kumar said. The bribe for vote allegation and audio tapes aired by local channels in connection with it have spawned a no-hold-barred spat between leaders of TDP and TRS, in power in the Andra Pradesh and Telangana respectively. Based on complaints by TDP workers accusing the Telangana government of illegally tapping Naidu's phone, cases were registered under different sections of IPC and relevant provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, police said today. Joining the issue, YSR Congress asked Naidu to come clean on the authenticity of the tapes and prove his innocence. Those opposing ‘Surya namaskar’ should drown in the sea: Aditynath V

aranasi: Firebrand BJP leader Yogi Adityanath has stoked a controversy with his remarks that those opposing 'surya namaskar' should "drown in the sea". With certain minority groups protesting against inclusion of 'Surya namaskar' exercise during the June 21 International Yoga Day celebrations, the Gorakhpur MP said, "Sun is the source of life giving energy. Whoever thinks Sun is communal, I would like to humbly request them to drown themselves in the sea or they should stay in a dark cell." "Sun God has never deprived anyone of its light based on caste, creed or religion. Despite that if they are calling sun communal, I feel amused at their mindset," said

Yogi Adityanath

the BJP leader yesterday at a religious event in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency. "And my request to them would be that they should not take the sunlight or even its warmth," said the saffron-clad leader, who is known for courting controversy with his inflammatory remarks. Adityanath's remarks came after the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board said that it will move the Supreme Court against inclusion of Surya namaskar and Yoga in schools. Congress and Samajwadi Party hit out the BJP leader, saying he was trying to create a communal divide, and stressed that nobody can force their own belief system on any citizen.

hind (MP): While issuing notices to the people who encroach on public land is a common practice for government authorities, officials in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh have gone to the extent of slapping a notice on Lord Hanuman! The Bhind Municipality has pasted a notice on the door of Hanuman temple at Chhoti bazaria area, in which it has asked the deity to clear the place in a week as the religious structure has encroached on public space. The civic authorities are, however, now calling it a "blunder" with a notice being served to the officer concerned to conduct an inquiry into the matter. In the notice, addressed to Lord Hanuman, instead of the temple priest or the trust, the deity has been asked to clear 8 x 10 feet encroachment area along with the debris in a week's time. Else, the notice said, the municipality will flatten the area and also recover the

money incurred on clearing the debris thereafter. Bhind municipality anti-encroachment drive in-charge Dhiresh Tiwari told PTI that the notice was served addressing Lord Hanuman "by mistake", as a large number of notices were served to illegal encroachers. Chief Municipality Officer (CMO) R S Chari on the other hand blamed Tiwari for the blunder and served him a notice to inquire into the matter.

The strike was carried out by commandos on specific intelligence input in coordination with Myanmarese authorities, with the Army saying that "significant casualties" had been inflicted on two militant groups believed to be NSCN(K) and KYKL. "These attacks were to be carried out by some of the groups involved in earlier attacks on our security personnel and their allies," he told reporters here while briefing on the operation without taking any questions. "In view of the immenent threat, an immediate response was necessary. Based on intelligence, we conducted operations to counter these planned assaults," Maj Gen Singh added.

“College life helps to mould your entire personality,” Says Ritika Patel, Deputy Manager – Human Resources at Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd.

on. I would not trade this experience for anything in the world, no matter how good, how bad or how weird it was. It was all worth it! In my position the salary one can expect is between Rs 9 to 12 lakhs per annum. The education abroad gives a lot of flexibility. I can go on and on about this, but the major difference is that to get into a college in US or AUS, the student doesn’t need to perform well in studies only; but if you are good in any sport, athletics, extracurricular activities like dance, skating etc. you may be eligible for full time scholarships to get the admission in your dream college in the stream you would like to pursue. The curriculum has a more international perspective and practical approach than just classroom studies. Also, the timings could be arranged so that you can work, earn your living and get educated at the same time. There are in-house jobs available under faculties or administrative staff. There isn’t any age bracket for anyone, not literally and not even in the sense of what’s deemed right by society. Also, colleges abroad give immense opportunity to change your stream after or during your education. So, at any time you understand that the field chosen by you is not something you will like to build your career on, you may change it with required approvals and graduate in the field you are interested to study in; if you complete the required number of sessions. did my PGDBM (HR) from ITM, Navi Mumbai. The first day in college was daunting because you are leaving your home and parents. There was a mix of excitement and anxiousness. Pretty great in short! Nobody dared rag me. I travelled to college by the college bus. College life was fun. Some days it was great, other times it was super hectic and many a times disappointing too, over all it was like a roller coaster and that too, a freaking awesome one, which made every penny worthwhile. The professors were kind of okay; but some were really knowledgeable and great teachers too. I loved studying subjects like Org Behavior, Learning and Development and OD Interventions. It did not feel like studies at all, well at least until we were introduced to labor laws! Our favorite eating and meeting place was this small area known as LP and then I guess there was Café 9 and the malls at Vashi and some other joints too; I don’t remember the names. I remember the room I use to stay in was numbered ‘07’. And because of the rapport we shared among the roommates of room no. ‘07’ we became a pretty popular group in our batch generally called as ‘room no. 7’. I have memories of the evening spent in our room, chatting and just rolling with laughter, the nonstop barging of other girls from the hostel asking for notes and stuff. It’s all unforgettable. Now we just share our awesomeness on whatsapp. I stayed in the hotel and we had our bag of tricks but one stands out when we tricked our roommate into watching a horror flick

a complete phasing out of CST (currently paid for interstate movement of goods) and dismantling of state-level check-posts are imperatives. To get states on its side, the government has proposed allowing states to levy an additional tax of 1% on supply of goods in lieu of CST for 2 years. We believe this is against the core principle of GST, and will defer full benefits of the rollout. This will also delay the dismantling of check-posts so critical to ensure faster transit of goods. Today, a considerable amount of journey time – estimated at a quarter – is spent at check-posts and city entry points, which add to the cost

of transporting goods, and forces companies to maintain buffer inventories. CRISIL Research’s assessment shows the consumer durables sector will be the biggest beneficiary of GST, potentially saving 30% of logistics costs from current levels of 7-8% of sales. The sector has the most number of warehouses set up solely to avoid paying CST and hence offers maximum scope for consolidation. Also, consumer durables have high brand recall and long shelf life, so can’t be easily substituted. This would persuade manufacturers’ to consolidate loads in larger warehouses.

FinMin Returns Oil Ministry’s Gas Price Premium Proposal By A Business Reporter

F

inance Ministry has returned an Oil Ministry proposal to allow market price for part of the natural gas produced by firms like ONGC and Reliance Industries from difficult fields. "Finance Ministry has made certain observations on the proposal and returned it without approval," a top source with direct knowledge of the development said. The government, while approving a new gas pricing formula based on international hub

rates in October last year, had decided that new gas discoveries in deep-water, ultradeep sea or high-temperature and high-pressure fields will be given a premium over and above the approved price. The Oil Ministry was asked to determine the premium to be paid to discoveries made post October 2014. Based on a recommendation from its upstream technical arm, the ministry proposed to allow a fixed percentage of natural gas produced from difficult fields to be sold at market price and the remaining as

per the approved price. While the current domestic gas price is USD 4.66 per million British thermal unit, the market price as measured by the rate at which the fuel is imported, is USD 7-8. The source said the finance ministry has its comments stated that the premium should be consistent with the October 2014 Cabinet decision. Following this, the Oil Ministry has resubmitted the proposal explaining that the premium proposed was consistent with the October 2014 decision of the Cabinet Com-

mittee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). "The percentage of total volumes that can be sold at market price will be different for ultra-deep sea discoveries, deepsea finds and high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) fields," the source said without elaborating. All gas producers including state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) have stated that it was uneconomical to produce gas from difficult fields at the current price of USD 4.66 per mmBtu, the source said.

MFs Find India Friendlier Than China By A Business Reporter utual funds find Indian market more investor friendly than China's although some of its practices are not at par with global standards, says a Morningstar report. According to the Fund Investor Experience Report, of 25 countries, Korea and the US were named as the most investorfriendly markets while China was the least investor-friendly. "With an overall grade of C+, India has a mix of out-

in the report that continues to have capital controls, which limits investors' ability to invest in foreign securities," the report said. In the Disclosure category, India received a C+ grade. India requires disclosure of full fund portfolio holdings monthly instead of on a semiannual basis typical of other markets evaluated in the report. India is one of only two countries that hold this distinction, the report said. Korea received an A this year because of its improved

standing practices and others that fail to meet global standards, relative to other markets evaluated in this report," Morningstar, a provider of independent investment research said adding that the Indian fund market lacks any assetbased commissions. From 'A' to 'D+', there are nine grades in the report. Morningstar evaluated countries in four categories that are weighted to calculate the overall grade: Regulation and Taxation, Disclosure, Fees and Expenses, and Sales and Media. In the Regulation and Taxation category, India receives a B- grade. "India is one of only a few countries

sales practices, while the United States garnered the highest score for the fourth time. The Netherlands and Taiwan got an A- grade, while United Kingdom got B+ and Sweden received B. The countries that received B- ranking include Australia, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Switzerland. India along with Canada, Germany, New Zealand and Thailand got a C+ rank, while Belgium, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa and Spain got C. "China received the lowest grade of a D+ because of high fees, limitations on overseas investing, and restrictions on foreign-domiciled funds," the report said.

25 WORLD Fugitive Razakar commander gets Dubai parks to open death for war crimes in B’desh early for Yoga, Tai Chi

haka: A fugitive commander of the notorious Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the Pakistani troops, was today sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court for massacre and torture particularly of Hindus during the country's 1971 liberation war. Syed Mohammad Hasan Ali, 68, was found guilty on five charges out of six and Justice M Enaytur Rahim, chairman of the three-member panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1, handed down the death sentence to him. The verdict said that the "death be executed by hanging the accused by the neck till he is dead or by shooting him till he is dead". "The government will decide on his manner of execution," the judge said in a rare directive while handing down death penalties. Justice Rahim said since Ali was absconding the sentence "shall be executed after his arrest or when he surrenders before the tribunal, whichever is earlier." Ali, a commander of the notorious Razakar Bahini which was formed as an auxiliary force to the Pakistani troops, was defended by a state appointed lawyer during the trial. Under the law, Ali can chal-

Syed Mohammad Hasan Ali lenge the verdict in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court after surrendering before the tribunal. The tribunal said five out of the six charges like massacre, murders, torture particularly of Hindus and arson, against Ali were "proved beyond doubt" and he was awarded the capital punishment for two of the charges. Ali, who hails from northeastern Kishorganj district, is the fifth person to be convicted of war crimes in absentia since the trials started in 2010. According to witnesses, Ali's notoriety in Tarhail area of the district in 1971 earned him

the title of 'Razakar Daroga' (Razakar police officer). He is believed to have fled the country as the trial process was initiated but 26 witnesses testified against Ali during the trial. This was the 19th verdict delivered by the country's two war crimes tribunals since Bangladesh initiated the trials of suspected war criminals in 2010. In the previous 18 cases, the tribunals tried 18 people and handed down death penalty to 13. However, in the appeal process against the verdicts, the Supreme Court enhanced the life imprisonment of one of the convicts –- Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah -to death penalty, finding the tribunal verdict too lenient. In another case, the apex court reduced the death sentence of another Jamaat stalwart Delwar Hossain Sayeedi ordering him to be imprisoned until his death. The rest of the tribunal judgements now also await hearing in the apex court for review as appeals by convicts have been filed. Authorities have so far executed death penalties of two Jamaat leaders -– Mollah and Muhammad Quamaruzzaman.

ubai: Yoga enthusiasts, joggers and other fitness freaks in Dubai have been allowed early morning access to parks and other facilities without an entry fee. "We understand the need to encourage physical activities such as yoga, Tai Chi, and Art of Living for example," said Mohammed Al Fardan, the head of Parks at the Parks and Horticulture Department of the Dubai Municipality. Fardan was addressing a press conference here to announce the first International Yoga Day celebrations to be hosted by the city municipality on June 12, the report said. However, this doesn't mean everybody can come before the park is open. "We don't want families coming for picnic and barbeques and queueing up with kids to avoid the fee by entering the park before 8 am," Fardan was quoted as saying by the 'Khaleej Times'. "Parks have the best environment for activities that help residents improve their health. People want to do these exercises earlier in the morning before the parks open at 8 am. So, we are allowing them to enter the park if they wish

to come early morning even before the parks are technically open. We are not charging them the entry fee also," he said. It was earlier necessary to take special permission from the municipality to exercise or perform yoga at the parks with certain conditions. In 2012, the then director of the Parks and Horticulture Department had said that people should take special permission from the department to exercise or perform yoga at the parks. Pics: AP/PTI

NASA spacecraft finds impact glass on Mars W

ashington: A NASA spacecraft has detected deposits of glass on Mars which were formed by asteroid impacts and may hold signs of ancient life on the red planet. Formed in the searing heat of a violent asteroid impact, the glasses can encapsulate and preserve biological material for millions of years on Earth, and can also serve as a substrate for microbial life. A previous study led by geologist Peter Schultz from Brown University

that was published last year had found organic molecules and even plant matter entombed in glass formed by an impact that occurred millions of years ago in Argentina. Schultz suggested that similar processes might preserve signs of life on Mars, if indeed they were present at the time of an impact. These impact glasses are thus an important target to search for signs of ancient life on Mars, but until now they have not been definitively de-

tected on the Martian surface. Now, Kevin Cannon and Jack Mustard from Brown University have shown that large glass deposits are present in several ancient yet well-preserved craters scattered across the Martian surface. To identify minerals and rock types remotely, scientists measure the spectra of light reflected off the planet's surface. But impact glass does not have a particularly strong spectral signal. In the lab, Cannon

mixed together powders with a similar composition of Martian rocks and fired them in an oven to form glass. He then measured the spectral signal from that glass. Once he had the signal from the lab glass, he used an algorithm designed to pick out similar signals in data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), which flies aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

ATULLAH: Virat Kohli's proactive and aggressive style of leadership will be tested when India take on sprightly underdogs Bangladesh in the one-off cricket Test starting here tomorrow.Kohli was anointed with full-time Test captaincy after Mahendra Singh Dhoni quit in the middle of the Australia series. The Bangladesh Test match will be, in essence, the start of a life without Dhoni for the team, which comprises cricketers of an average age of 26.There will also be a sense of deja vu when Kohli walks out alongside his Bangladeshi counterpart Mushfiqur Rahim at the Khan Saheb Osman Ali Stadium today. One of India's most successful captain Sourav Ganguly also started as a full-time captain against Bangladesh some 15 years back in a oneoff Test match that was played

six batsmen and four bowlers with a specialist wicketkeeper or with an additional bowler to ensure that taking 20 wickets is not a problem. On paper, it's another David versus Goliath battle with India having won six out of the seven Test matches between the two countries. Bangladesh drew just one in Chittagong in 2007 with the help of rain. But Bangladesh have been on the rise after a lion-hearted show in the World Cup, where they disposed off England to make it to the last-eight stage. The World Cup was followed by handing Pakistan a shocking 3-0 ODI series defeat and drawing a Test match, which has not only raised the Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma and R Ashwin during a nets session on the eve of the test match against profile of Bangladesh on Tuesday. the team but also earned them a bit more respect from at Bangabandhu Stadium in per while that match marked career, it will also be a test of the opposition teams than Dhaka. ATULLAH: Up against fancied India, Bangladesh's ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza says the home team should be "realistic" and enter the one-off Test with an aim to achieve a draw. India are currently ranked third in the ICC Test rankings as compared to Bangladesh's lowly ninth position on the eve of the match. "(We) have to bat very well. But just batting well does not win Tests, only helps draw them. Wickets and strategies should be built with that in mind," Mashrafe told bdnews24.Com. "I think a draw will be a pretty good result. Separate meetings for bowlers, batsmen; one hr net to beat heat

FATULLAH: The Indian team rested their bowlers during the hour-long net session at the Khan Saheb Osman Ali Stadium on the eve of their one-off Test match against Bangladesh, starting today.. "The humidity is killing and the coaching staff thought that the boys should not stress themselves too much in this heat and hence we trained for an hour today. The bowling unit was rested as they will have a job in hand tomorrow," a source close to the team management told PTI, explaining the reason for short duration of training. Another interesting aspect in team's planning and preparation was separate meetings for the batsmen as well as the bowlers -- a concept which of late has not been employed. "The bowling unit had a separate meeting where coach Bharath Arun addressed them while the batsmen were addressed by Ravi Shastr,” said a source.

we will plan according to that. "(But) in reality if we can score 450 or 500 and if bowlers can bowl in the right areas to restrict their (India) batsmen, we can manage a draw. Reason for Indian cricket’s rise is IPL: Gayle L

ondon: Hailing the IPL as a top-class tournament, hard-hitting West Indian batsman Chris Gayle has credited the cash-rich Twenty20 annual event for Indian cricket's rise in different formats of the game. Gayle, who played a big part for Royal Challengers Bangalore reaching the playoffs in season 8, believes that the tournament has really been the shot in the arm for many a young cricketer. "Look at Indian cricket at the moment. They are dominating all forms of the game now and the reason is the IPL," Gayle was quoted as saying on telegraph.Co.Uk. "The players touch shoulders with their international opponents. They share the same dressing rooms. They know what they are thinking. Then they become bolder performing for their countries. That is because of IPL and it is fantastic," he added. Fulfilling his county commitment for Somerset before heading off to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Gayle,

a controversial 'No-Ball' in that fatefulWorld Cup quarterfinal match against India robbed them off a fair chance, will also add spice to the contest. Kohli would not like to take the next door neighbours to be the proverbial 'banana peel' that minnows often turn out to be in such mismatched contests. The task will be cut out for the Bangladeshi bowlers, led by their fastest pacer Rubel Hossain and wily all-rounder Shakib-al-Hasan, as they face the challenge to stop a formidable batting line-up, which is capable of posting a monumental score in helpful conditions. Kohli, whose last Test series against the mighty Australians earned him a whopping 692 runs with four centuries, would like to cash in on this opportunity to get another hefty score against his name.

Kohli ready with his vision for Indian cricket

F

ATULLAH: The one-off match against Bangladesh will be Virat Kohli's first as full-time Test captain and the excited star batsman says he is ready to roll out his vision for Indian cricket. "It is pretty special. I never thought at 26 I will be captain of India Test side. My only dream as a child was to play Test cricket for India. Over the years I have matured in my mind. The people around me in BCCI and my teammates thought that I was the right guy for the job. I am pretty grateful for that," Kohli said in the pre-match press conference. "I have some vision in my mind which I have discussed with the team. We are all on the same page. It is pretty exciting for me to start as fulltime Test captain and hopefully it is a positive start," he added. Talking about the playing eleven for the match, Kohli gave enough hint that he will go with five bowlers and six batsmen. "I certainly believe in giving the team a chance to pick up 20 wickets. I am a big fan of playing five bowlers in a 6-5 combination. You only need two to three

We are training hard so that guys get into the mindset of the game. You need to build that momentum in practice and they (the players) need to be ready to deliver from ball one. Today practice session is going to be a light one but we have pushed ourselves in the last few days," he said. He asserted his team did not need to pay much attention to how the pitch would play out. "Wickets in Bangladesh are similar everywhere. There is no change of soil. Most of the guys have played here last year. We will pretty much know the wicket will play,” added Kohli.

GM Martyn win Mumbai Mayor’s chess title M

UMBAI: Grandmaster Krastiv Martyn from Ukraine edged out Georgian GM Luka Paichadze on a better tie-break to win the eighth edition of Mumbai Mayor’s International Chess Tournament held at Goregaon Sports Club at their premises. Krastiv takes home the winner’s purse of Rs 3 lakhs from a prize pool of Rs 11 lakhs and the glittering LIC Chairman’s trophy. GM Luka Paichadze had to content with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakhs while GM Nguyen Duc from Vietnam was awarded Rs 1 lakh for securing the third position. In the crucial final last round encounter between Krastiv and Priyadarshan, the latter, playing with black pieces, adopted the two Knight’s defense – an opening which offers attacking possibilities at the cost of a pawn. The game went on equal footing as both the players adopted a positive approach in the middle game but the position started deteriorating for Priyadrashan thereafter and he resigned on move 65. FIFA NEEDS ‘PAINFUL’ REFORM: IOC CHIEF SPORTS

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 2015

L

AUSANNE: Olympic chief Thomas Bach said that scandal-plagued FIFA needs "painful" but necessary reform. The IOC president said the crisis at football's world governing body was bigger than the bribes-forvotes furore over the awarding of the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City. "We know from our experience that putting everything on the table can be painful but it's absolutely necessary. We've seen that in our past," he said at the International Olympic Committee's Lausanne headquarters. "It's only by doing that that the IOC restored its credibility."

He added: "We can only encourage FIFA to pursue the reforms that it has chosen to carry out. We appreciate that FIFA should be ready for substantial reforms." Bach said the scale of the 2002 Games affair was nothing in comparison to the storm enveloping FIFA."The difference in magnitude is enormous," the 61-year-old told media after an IOC meeting. "There is almost no comparison with what happened with Salt Lake City and what is happening at FIFA. "It's hard to compare, perhaps on the principle, but not on the scale." Bach addressed FIFA's Congress last week in Zurich 24

hours after the corruption scandal blew up with the arrest of seven FIFA officials as part of a US-led corruption inquiry. He told delegates there to co-operate fully with the wide-ranging investigation to shed "full light" on the corruption allegations. On top of a mass of bribery claims involving FIFA officials Swiss judicial authorities are probing the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar that has also raised questions about the 2010 event in South Africa. The scandal triggered the shock resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter, four days after his reelection for a fifth term.

Egypt court upholds death penalty to 11 soccer fans C

AIRO: An Egyptian court upheld the death sentences against 11 people for their involvement in the country's worst-ever soccer violence that killed 74 fans after a top-league game in the coastal Port Said city. The violence followed a match between long-time rivals of Port Said's al-Masry team and visiting Cairo team al-Ahly, and took place on February 1, 2012. The riots, during the tense

and highly politicised period of military rule following the 2011 January revolution which brought an end to three decades of rule by dictator Hosni Mubarak, had triggered unrest in capital Cairo, where another 16 people died. During the violence, the thenPresident Mohammed Morsi declared a state of emergency in the city. Today's sentencing came as part of a retrial of 73 defendants, including 9 police personnel and three officials

from el-Masry football team, in the case in which another 40 defendants were sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. One of the 11 men was sentenced in absentia. Today's sentences can still be appealed before Egypt's cassation court. The sentences were given in April and were sent to the Grand Mufti, who according to Egyptian law must review all death sentences, although his decision is not binding.

Vijay Patil to contest against Pawar in MCA elections M

UMBAI: Reigning President Sharad Pawar has drawn Vijay Patil as his opponent in a straight contest to retain his post in the Mumbai Cricket Association's upcoming elections on June 17, at close of nominations. NCP supremo Pawar was elected unopposed as President of MCA at the previous elections but there will be a contest unless either of the two withdraw their nomination before the June 13 deadline. Incidentally Patil - who heads the Cricket First group in the MCA elections and is

also the President of the D Y Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, - has filed his nomination only for the post of the President, according to

MCA sources. He is the outgoing Vice President under Pawar. Among others who have filed nominations to contest the elections are former India cricket captain and exchief selector Dilip Vengsarkar who is aiming to make a comeback as a Vice President after a few years' gap. Vengsarkar has been fielded by the ruling Bal Mahaddalkar group, which is also backing BJP MLA Ashish Shelar and Vinod Deshpande for the same post with one of the trio set to withdraw from the contest to elect two VPs.

Jos Buttler reached his second during the first ODI match between England and New Zealand in Edgbaston on Tuesday. England scored 408/9 against NZ.

Messi aims to fill trophy void at Copa America L

A SERENA: Lionel Messi has won everything possible with Barcelona but has been left staring at an empty shelf gathering dust for his Argentina honours. And 20,000 Argentine fans will cross the Andes hoping that the jinx is ended at the Copa America, starting in Chile on Thursday. Barcelona's 3-1 victory over Juventus on Saturday provided Messi's fourth Champions League crown in 10 years. He also has seven Spanish titles and two World Club Cups and has been world player of the year four times.

But Argentina's defeat to Germany in the World Cup last year extended a national title drought lasting back to the 1993 Copa America. "Our aim is to win this year," said Messi, who has nevertheless tasted Olympic gold with his country at the 2008 Beijing Games. But while he was declared player of the World Cup, the Little Genius's speed and jinking runs never seem the same on the international stage as they do when he pulls on a Barcelona shirt. Messi scored 43 goals in 38 Spanish championship

matches this season -- behind eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo on 48 -- and has the most goals in La Liga history with 286 and also a record 77 in the Champions League. But the rate falls for Argentina, with 45 goals in 97 appearances. Messi says he is always being asked why Argentina, who start this tournament again as one of the favourites, never win. He wept uncontrollably after losing the 2010 World Cup quarter final 4-0 to Germany when Argentine legend Diego Maradona was the coach.

Lewis says ‘wrong choices’ led to jail term L ONDON: Former England all-rounder Chris Lewis has said he wants to help prevent young cricketers making the "wrong choices" that caused him to be jailed for cocaine smuggling as he was released from prison on Tuesday. The 47-year-old Lewis, who won 32 Test caps and was regarded as one of the most naturally talented players of his generation, was convicted in 2009. But he served less than half of his 13-year sentence. Lewis, in an interview with England's Professional Cricketers' Association, said money worries in 2008 had led him into trying to smuggle £140,000 worth of dissolved cocaine into Britain. "I became afraid of what the future held, and at that point the thinking went awry," said Lewis. "I made choices. They were the wrong choices and I say sorry for them," added Lewis, a lively seamer who took 93 Test wickets at 37.52 and averaged 23 with the bat. "I've had six years in jail and until recently I would still look around and think 'wow you're in jail'. That was not part of the plan. I never saw that coming." Born in Guyana, Lewis moved to Britain as a 10year-old and went on to make 189 first-class career appearances for Leicestershire, Surrey and Nottinghamshire. Lewis played his final first-class match in 2000. He attempted a return with Surrey's Twenty20 side in 2008, but was hindered by a hip injury. Lewis and former basketball player Chad Kirnon were sentenced in May 2009 after being found guilty of carrying a liquid form of cocaine into Gatwick Airport on a flight from St Lucia. "On a physical level jail has not been hard. It's a hard mental exercise to stop yourself from thinking negatively," said Lewis. "For 24 hours a day you're a prisoner. It's nice to be back - and I don't mean being outside - I mean back being me."
