‘W
e need to empower men first to empower women,’ was the message that was put forth at the panel discussion 'Women Enterprise Builders (WEBs)' organised by the World Trade Center and All India Association of Industries on the occasion of International Women's Day in the city yesterday. All the panelists were women who have not only written their own success stories but have also made a marked difference in the lives of thousands like them. Malini Shankar, Principal Secretary, Water Resources Department, Government of Maharashtra, in her theme address said that empowering of women should be started at a very young age and the home should be
the first place where she should be made to feel equal. “I was brought up in a very democratic and modern set up where my brothers were made to do similar chores that I was expected to do,” said Shankar. Explaining that in her professional career as an IAS officer she faced a lot of gender bias but her self belief and the feeling that the power is vested in her by the Constitution of India kept her going and doing her job to the best of her ability. “Women constitute 50 per cent of the population, so investing in women is a smart decision,” said Andrea L.Aquilla, Economic Officer, US Consulate. “Every rupee earned by a woman is spent on education, healthcare and social upliftment which in turn contributes to GDP of the nation,” she said. “According to a survey if all the
women start working then the GDP of the nation has a potential to increase three to four fold,” she added. There were other enterprise builders like Nirmala Kandalgaonkar from Marathwada region who is a founder of Vivam Agrotech, a company which is into waste management. Kandalgaonkar started with Rs.50,000 managing waste from her village and producing bio gas, manure and electricity. “Today the turnover of my company is Rs.5 crore and I supply electricity to 126 councils,” said proud Kandalgaonkar. Other successful enterprise builders included Nilima Patil, Director, Food Cluster, Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture, Mahalaxmi Saravanan, Founder & PartnerWomen Entrepreneurs India who shared their experiences and stories.

He felt that this year's unseasonal rains also helped in reducing the spread of the disease. “When someone who has contracted the disease coughs, the virus spreads into the atmosphere or remains as a suspended particle. The rains helped wash away the suspended particles that contained the virus and thereby helped reduce the disease from spreading,” said Dr. Merchant. On Monday, city hospitals registered 47 new cases of swine flu. Among the affected people, there are 17 males, 30 females and 11 children. Sushil Kadam | ADC
he menace of swine flu doesn't seem to end as it claimed another victim in Mumbai yesterday, taking the death toll to 21. The total number of registered swine flu cases has also gone up to 849. The victim was a 56-year-old female, a resident of Alibaug, Raigad. She was admitted at Tamboli Memorial Hospital in Raigad for hypertension on February 14 this year. She was later transferred to the Holy Spirit Hospital at Andheri on February 15. But the woman died yesterday due to acute respiratory distress with H1N1 Pneumonitis.
Dr. Mangala Gomare, Head of Epidemology Cell of BMC, has assured that preventive measures are being taken to counter the virus. “The hospitals are doing their best to not only prevent the spread of the disease but also cure the people affected by it. Around 700 people have been cured and discharged while around 50-60 people are under treatment for the same,” said Dr. Gomare. Dr. Suleman Merchant, dean of Sion Hospital expects that the rise in temperature will lead to decline in number of swine flu cases. “It can be seen every year that the number of swine flu cases declines as the tem-

Cyborg roaches to help rescue survivors
IMAGINE a fleet of cyborg cockroaches roaming into damaged nuclear power plants to aid rescue operations! Researchers have implanted live cockroaches with electrodes that stimulate the nerves in the insects'
antennae, enabling them to steer the creatures around like remotecontrolled toys. Cockroaches are better than any small-scale robots that exist today, said Hong Liang, from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
Liang said the remote-controlled roaches can "go anywhere you guide them to," including places humans could not go, such as disaster zones. Researchers implanted electrodes in the nerves of
Palestinians celebrate Women’s Day with Indian music A well known Indian female artist left hundreds of Palestinians spellbound with her soulful Santoor recital at an event in Ramallah, West Bank, to mark the International Women's Day. Varsha Agrawal from Sufiyana Gharana enthralled a jam-packed auditorium at Edward Said National Conservatory of Music as she weaved a web of melodies. "India for me so far meant Bollywood culturally. Most of us Palestinians have been unaware of this facet of India. It touches your soul directly and takes you away from all worries", a Palestinian woman, Ghada, who came with her young daughter told PTI. Representative of India to the State of Palestine Mahesh Kumar dedicated the performance to the
"Empowerment of Women", something Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has recently emphasised on in order to strengthen Palestinian society. The audience often broke into applause as Agrawal performed at the event supported by Palestinian Ministry of Culture. She performed with Raga Rageshwari accompanied by Pandit Lalit Mahant on Tabla and Asit Goswami on Sitar. "When I talked to Palestinians about the rich Indian musical culture, all they could think of was Bollywood films and songs which are hugely popular here," said Essam, who has studied engineering in India. "I enjoyed Indian classical music during my three years of stay in India as a student and this

American and discoid cockroaches. They glued tiny backpacks to the backs of the roaches, which were large enough to support them, 'Live Science' reported. Each pack held a micro-controller, wireless transceiver and a battery. The resulting cyborg roaches were made to run on a trackball, while the researchers pressed buttons to deliver electrical zaps to the nerves in the insects' thoraxes, causing them to turn left or right. Researchers were also able to make the roaches walk and turn in the desired direction 60 per cent of the time. They are now developing a noninvasive version of the cockroach control system, which uses a vibrating motor positioned near the roaches' antennae to make the insects move. The research was published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

t was an unusual sight witnessed at the forecourt of Vidhan Bhavan yesterday morning with senior Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) opposition legislators staging vociferous protests against the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena led state government. However, they could not prevent Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao from entering the house to deliver his joint address to both the houses of the state legislature which began its month long budget session here. After having experienced an unsavory melee that was witnessed during the threeday special session in November, the legislature security was well prepared and had thrown a security cordon along the portico and pathway preventing the opposition leaders from getting anywhere near the Governor. Senior Congress leader of opposition in legislative assembly Radhakrishna VikhePatil, senior NCP MLA Ajit Pawar, leader of opposition in legislative council Dhananjay Munde, Chhagan Bhujbal, state NCP president Sunil Tatkare and others were seen holding

Speaking to news persons later, Ajit Pawar remarked that the government came to power after giving assurances. “Now the government cannot display cowardliness. Natural calamities come suddenly, the government needs to act instead of complaining,” he added. Armed with placards condemning the government over what they called failure to pay timely compensation
to the farmers affected by drought and unseasonal rains, they raised banners and slogans on the killing of Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Govind Pansare. The opposition members raised slogans demanding reservation quota for the minority community. However, with most of the Congressmen busy welcoming Lok Sabha MP Ashok Chavan as the new Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president the opposition protest lacked the strength.

The family members of the deceased Neelam came into
Neelam with husband Pawan Singh the city to perform her final rites, but refused to co-operate any further, police say in view of the fact that Pawan Singh's elder brother is married to Neelam's elder sister. Amboli police officials say, “We are going to take legal advice from our legal cell and superiors too. If required we will take suo-moto action and book all the family members for abetment to commit
suicide. In the meantime, we are recording the statement of Pawan Singh's colleagues and an heroine who is working with him in his upcoming movies. It might be noted here that Pawan is having another wife who is elder to him by around 10 years and is staying separately. Besides, investigations so far have revealed that the prime supect was also having illicit physical relationship with many other woman as well.'' As the entire family members were present when the victim allegedly committed suicide, the cops do not want to shut the case soon by just registering it as an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Besides, on the day of the incident, Pawan visited his flat at around 1.00 am and left early to hisother flat which he had in Oshiwara, by saying he had some work related to his upcoming movie. It is suspected that a bitter quarrel had erupted between him and his late wife, Neelam, police officials added. However, no suicide note was recovered from the spot. On Sunday, Neelam Singh allegedly committed suicide using her dupatta at her residence in Evershine Park, Orchid building in suburban Andheri. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan and it was discovered first by the actor's elder brother who was present inside the the flat along with other family members.

nderlining the need to enhance respect for women not only in society but also in their department, the Palghar district police observed 'International Women’s Day' on March 8 in an innovative manner. While various women oriented programmes were held at all 23 police stations in the district, the reins of seven were handed over exclusively to women officers. Right from station-in-charge to lock-up guards the entire operations of police stations including Nalasopara (PSI-Kale), Virar (PSI Mhaske), Tulinj (PSI Agave), Manickpur (PSI Shintre), Vasai (PSI Patil), Valiv (API Puri) and Palghar (PSI Nalavade) were handled by the lady cops. Apart from holding interactive sessions with members of Mahila Dakshata Samithis, the lady cops also invited female students and teachers from local educational institutions to have a look at the

Wild animals in zoo used as guinea pigs Continued from pg 1 « Research is permitted to be conducted in the Zoo by students and researchers without any agreement with them or with any other Colleges or Research institutes. One female tiger has disappeared from the zoo. From the information received, it is clear that despite one female tiger been present in the “Closing Stock” of 2004 – 2005 as shown in its “Inventory Report”, the “Opening Stock” for the year 2005 – 2006 does not show the presence of one female tiger. This proves that the female Tiger has disappeared from the zoo. Illegal studies on effects of anaesthesia etc are being conducted upon wild endangered Tigers which can never be permitted since such animals need proper care and need to be protected from ill-health and disease. Great efforts and resources are put by our nation and other countries to protect tigers, but in our Zoo it is noticed that the zoo management has a cavalier and callous approach towards it’s care and protection. The animals were made to fast to conduct the studies and research and experiments,” the letter stated. It further added, “Illegal studies have been conducted upon Tigers and Deers by injecting anaesthesia (Xylazine and Ketamine) into them and
observing it’s effects upon them, though conducting such studies have never been permitted by Mumbai Zoo Management. Veterinary Officer is being posted in Zoo, despite them having no past experience of handling of or caring for wild animals. per the dissertation submitted by Kamal Kumar to Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur, it is clearly written that "Deer died during anaesthesia". It is clear that PIO has deliberately and malafidely provided false information in RTI. From the photographs in the dissertation of Sanjay Kumar Tripathi submitted to Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli & Kamal Kumar submitted to MAFSU, Nagpur, it is clearly seen both the researcher and veterinary stu-
dents have personally conducted/carried out the research/experiment on Tigers and Deer at Mumbai Zoo and SGNP. In the entire research and experiment there have been unfailing co-operation whoprovided them facilities to carry out their research work from Dr. M.V. Vani who was posted as Deputy Superintendent at the zoo, Dr. M.S. Karwale who was posted as Assistant Superintendent at zoo, Dr. Barhate and Dr. Rananavare who were posted as Veterinarians at SGNP. The purpose of animals being kept captive at zoos and National Park's are not for conducting any study/ research/ experiments upon them by researchers and veterinary students. All of the above proves that animals are abused and experimented upon without any control or sanction of the authority. This is gross illegality and violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972; Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960; Indian Penal Code, 1860; Etc. So we request you to kindly investigate into this matter at the earliest and ensure that the culprits are penalized. Also, kindly ensure that any person or researcher if found to be involved in this scam should be suspended or transferred from the existing post before any investigations are conducted.”

What is BJP waiting for? W
ithin a short time of taking over power, Kashmir’s chief minister has clearly shown that he is not going to stick to the Common Minimum Programme with regard to governance of the state. The release of Alam is a clear indication that the CM is not going to stick to any arranged, mutually accepted programme. He has gone ahead and released a terrorist against whom there are 27 criminal pending cases. He did not think it was necessary to consult the BJP about it. He has made it clear that he has many such programmes which he will carry out without bothering about informing his BJP partner. It looks like he has thrown the minimum programme into the dust bin. Why is BJP silent? It did carry out some noisy exercises in the parliament, but it does not seem to have taken up the issue with Mufti. The BJP leaders must face facts and reality as well. The coalition partner has made it clear to them that they have no intention of sticking to Common Minimum Programme. BJP leaders in Delhi must have the decisive say with regard to the release of terrorist Alam. He should be back in prison. The BJP must insist on this. Mufti must be stopped before he causes further damage. Unless Mufti withdraws his order, BJP should quit the government. Circumstances prevailing in Kashmir, Presidents rule is the only way out.

P
OWER makes strange bedfellows. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who heads the Jammu & Kashmir government has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Yet his victory in the state assembly elections primarily has been on the plank that he will not allow the BJP to enter the Valley. That he has gone back on the electoral promise is not any different from what leaders of other political parties do. Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah sounds churlish when he says that the two had a prior understanding. Yet his surprise over their coalition is shared by the naïve who do not know how political deals take place. This is, however, the first time that the BJP has entered the Valley as a ruler, without winning any seat there. The presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the oath-taking ceremony only underlines the jubilation of the BJP over getting a niche. This may turn out to be only wishful thinking. A party with Hindutva on its agenda has little chance of any showing at a place where the population of Muslims is more than 95 per cent.

they have “learnt the lesson from history” and would not challenge India on Kashmir on the battle field. In 1971, the war was confined to Bangladesh. Islamabad did nothing to disturb the Kashmir side although it would have meant opening a second front to divert India’s attention. In any case, war between the two countries is now ruled out because both are nuclear powers. However, by mentioning separatists and elements from across the border, Mufti has tried to placate the Valley where pro-Pakistani elements thrive. Similarly, his demand for the return of Afzal Guru’s remains is aimed at placating the Muslims in the Valley. Radicals among them are pushing even the pro-Islam-
Jihad against poverty
Pak’s long-term game Mufti can claim that he has won the support of the BJP despite his anti-BJP electoral plank. But in the process he has furrowed deep the differences between the Valley, predominantly populated by the Muslims, and Jammu, having a substantially large Hindu population. His desperation to form the government may have aggravated the divide. It is not understandable why he stated that the separatists, militants and Pakistan have helped him in letting elections to be held in the state? Left to them they would not have done so. The separatists boycotted the polls, not to help Mufti, but to underline their stance that the polls under the supervision of Indian Election Commission were a farce. New Delhi had deployed security forces in such a number that the elements trying to disturb the scene would have been crushed. Probably, the militants, depleting in strength, did not want to risk getting crushed. Pakistan is playing a long-term game. It realizes that it cannot take Kashmir from India by force. The two wars have shown this. After the defeat in 1965, then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto told me in an interview that
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar abad line on the plea that Pakistan is essentially a Muslim country. Mufti’s own election campaign was not bereft of Islamic streak or the identity politics. Over the years, the Kashmiris’ alienation from India on the one hand and the feeling of helplessness of its population in becoming an independent country on the other has left the field open for the Islamic propagandists. The liberals are depleting in strength literally every day. The main reason is that the Kashmiris have not yet realized that India would never accept another division in the name of religion since the Hindu majority Jammu would like to either integrate with India or become a Union Territory. But New Delhi would never allow yet another Muslim country on India’s border. The Kashmiris’ demand for independence is suspect since the general perception is that
Rise in Divine love, without logic I
N order do certain jobs, you need certain qualifications, certain abilities and strength. If you want to lift 100 kilos of weight, you need that much strength. Not everyone can do it. So if love is a matter of ability and strength, then not everyone can love. But love transcends all abilities, all logics. Whether you are a fool or a wise person; whether you are rich or poor, you can be in love. Whether you are strong or weak, you can still be in love. Love does not depend on your ability. It only needs a simple recognition, an acknowledgement. And for that recognition to happen, it doesn't take a long time. Time is not a factor at all, but the company of wise people can really hasten the process. The company you keep can uplift your consciousness, your mind; make your heart blossom or make it shut down. You cannot catch love through logic. Logic cuts, logic analyses, tear things apart. But love is just the opposite. It brings everything together. Love is a process of uniting; logic is a method to analyse. The moment you start arguing, you simply indicate that you are not in agreement. When you argue, you think the other is not getting you right. That is when you try to convince him or her through arguments.
it is another ploy to join Pakistan ultimately. The separatists’ proximity to Islamabad has deepened the suspicion. India’s cancellation of a meeting between its foreign secretary and that of Pakistan may have been an overreaction. Yet it was meant to convey that the nearer Islamabad goes to the separatists, the farther it will be from New Delhi. There was a time when Yasin Malik was acceptable. But his conduct — hostility instead of opposition — has wound up his lobby in India. He has not only hardened himself but definitely changed the complexion of IndiaPakistan friendship which he appeared to champion. Mufti has rightly described the PDP-BJP coalition as historic. But if the coalition remains only a method to share power, the long-term perception will be lost.
To clear misunderstanding, you start arguing or explaining, but sometimes it creates more confusion, more misunderstanding. If you just keep quiet, everything would be cleared by itself. You want to convince people of your correctness and you miserably fail. Even if you convince the people of your correctness, they are not really convinced,
MATTER & SPIRIT because the argument you had has already created a distance and put a sour taste in the pudding. Logic has many possibilities; you can use the same logic to prove something or to disprove something. Ask lawyers! Any point can be taken to prove something or to disprove the same thing. There are three types of logic. Tarka, which means pure logic; kutarka or wrong logic and vitarka, which is a qualified logic. I will give you an example. If a door is half open that means it is half shut. That is pure logic. If the door is half open, we agree it is half closed. So if it is fully open, then it must be fully closed! This is called kutarka or wrong logic. The flower is on the table and the table is on the floor, so the flower is on the floor. This
The end is how the state once again becomes secular as was the case at the time of Sheikh Abdullah. The Hurriyat has disfigured its own image by going too close to the state’s Jammiat Islami. Unfortunately, the Hurriyat is not yet realizing the mistakes and persisting in taking a stance which mixes religion with politics. Unless it corrects its course it would not count much in the reconciliation process between India and Pakistan. The visit of Indian foreign secretary S. Jaishankar to Pakistan was one way of conveying that the cancellation of talks between the foreign secretaries was a reaction to the situation prevailing at that time, not a long-term policy. This has become amply clear from the talks that Jaishankar had with his counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry at Islamabad. The two sides must shed pride and prejudice and sit across the table to take up the long neglected agenda: Jihad against poverty. There are, in fact, no other more pressing issues for the two countries than ameliorating the living conditions of the people on both sides. It is a pity that even after seven decades of Independence both are bent on wasting the limited resources at their disposal in buying weapons than spending them on useful welfare measures. Mufti should associate New Delhi with this cause because he occupies such a position where Modi would pay heed to him. Emotional integration of people in Jammu & Kashmir is essential not only for development but also for the secular ideology. is wrong logic. Through this kutarka, only ignorance increases. And vitarka is such a logic, such an inference, that simply amazes you. Who am I? What is this all about? What is life? The understanding of what you are going through now, this moment, is also logic, but it's vitarka, qualified logic. So do not depend on arguments. Argument indicates lack of unity from the level of the heart. Often when you are studying under a teacher, under a Master, especially in the Zen tradition, they would never allow you to argue. Truth is beyond arguments, beyond discussions. Arguments are in vain. It is all just words, trying to convince someone that you are right. But in the field of love, that doesn't work. That is why so many love affairs break, because they start depending on some logic, some arguments. Arguments to convince that he or she loves the other person much more! That, often, is good enough to break any relationship. The flow of consciousness is towards Divine love because that is the source from where it has come. In this universe, everything is in a cycle; everything goes back to its source. A deep yearning for the pinnacle of love makes this world move in cycles. — Sri Sri Ravi Shankar www.artofliving.org Twitter @SriSri

Ban on cow slaughter very unfair THE decision of the Maharashtra government to ban cow slaughter and trading of beef products is totally wrong as these products are significant parts of the diet of many communities like Christians, Muslims, Parsis and sizeable portion of the Hindu community. It has been observed that lakhs of people not only consume it, but thousands depend on the trade for their livelihood. By denying this livelihood, the state is trampling upon their right to work. Eating beef is a matter of dietary choice, accepted all around the world. It cannot be, and should not be, imposed upon by the state. Indian Constitution defines the country as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. The voice of the majority, no matter how loud, cannot be viewed as the voice of the nation. It is high time the current Maharashtra government which is using communal hidden agenda of Hinduism stop this dirty politics.
APROPOS your article on 'Is ban on cow slaughter right'? We are thrilled about this decision by the government to ban cow slaughter in Maharashtra. In fact, this should be applicable in the entire country. There will always be comments on anything the government does. Why do the minority communities not speak when there are bomb blasts and rapes being carried out in the city and state. Why give heed to things that are not required, instead let the government do what they think is right. We support them to the fullest on the cow slaughter ban. — Devika Gvalani, Chembur

Virat Kohli should show some maturity on and off the field if he wants to be named as the next captain of Team India in Test cricket. THIS refers to 'Kohli's abusive behaviour reported to ICC and BCCI' (ADC, March 5, 2015). There is nothing surprising at all about BCCI and the Indian team management, trivializing the Kohli-journalist Sidhu episode; because cricketers of the Indian team have become a law unto themselves. These pompous men presume that they are doing a great service to the entire nation,
by playing for India. BCCI as everyone knows is a cosy club of sycophants. Be that as it may, what is quite surprising to the average Indian cricket lover, is that the media, (including Hindustan Times) has not taken this wanton assault on one of its own members, by the foul-mouthed, boorish Kohli, with the seriousness it deserves. Ideally, there should have been such an uproar in the
The arrogant attitude of Virat Kohli touched a new low as a complaint was lodged against him by the journalist, who suffered a barrage of abuses by the star cricketer. As ICC is handled by BCCI, we will not get justice for the complaint and BCCI will brush aside the serious charge against Kohli. The board members, officials and the players are ready to support the super cricketer and the journalist will be left in the lurch or the board will contemplate a counter charge to soften the matter. Kohli's unsporting behaviour on and off the field is a matter of concern for the Cricket Board and eyebrows are raised whether he can fit into the shoes of captain and behave like an ambassador of the country rather than a street fighter. He enjoys blowing flying kisses, but he cannot keep the Indian flag flying by behaving in this silly manner. — C.K. Ramanathan, Bhandup

he idea of consuming nothing but fluids is quite daunting. It may seem like an easy thing to do, but we can tell you from personal experience that after a few days on a liquid diet, your body will begin to crave solid food like a smoker craves nicotine! So, why do people go through all that trouble? Well, if you’ve undergone a medical procedure or are unable to digest solid food, liquid meals are your best bet for proper nutrition. These diets can help you to lose weight and detox, but they do have a few disadvantages. We asked clinical and sports nutritionist, Mansi Padechia, and celebrity nutritionist at Sketch Clinic, Dr. Riddesh Jani, about the concept of fluid-based diets and how they help us. First, let’s take a look at the three general reasons people choose to go on a liquid diet.
People who are about to undergo a surgical procedure are usually required to follow a liquid diet before their treatment. This is recommended because during and after the
surgery, patients need little or no food in their system. Mansi tells us, “Liquid diets bridge the gap between pure liquid and soft diets. They are recommended for patients who suffer from acute gastritis, acute infections and diarrhoea. Apart from this, people who suffer from obesity resort to liquid diets to bring their weight down to an ideal, safe number before undergoing a surgical procedure.
Most people try a liquid diet to lose weight. This works because a liquid diet is much low in calories than a regular diet. Dr. Riddhesh explains, “When liquid diets are followed in an appropriate manner, they can help you to shed excess fat and lose weight. This is because they cut your calorie intake to the bone, helping you lose excess weight in just a few days. But, such diets can also create problems if you follow it for too long, because a liquid diet may slow your metabolism down and may start to break down your muscles instead of fat storages. In this column, our Ophthalmic Consultant, Prof. Dr. Keiki Mehta will enlighten the readers’ on the latest Bladeless CATALYS Femtosecond Cataract Laser system. Dear Dr. Keiki Mehta, I am 68 and retired. For the past 15 years I am a HIGH DIABETIC and have BLOOD PRESSURE which is not under control. I am on diabetic medication as well as blood thinners and my other blood pressure medication. My vision has now become bad as I have developed cataracts in both eyes which need to be operated. A few weeks ago my cousin brother was operated by you on your latest Bladeless CATALYS laser cataract surgery system. I also would like to do my cataract surgery only by you at your hospital on your latest CATALYS system. How do I get prepared for my surgery as I am at present on medication for both, Diabetes and Blood Pressure? — Beroze Gandhi
“Prof. Dr. Keiki Mehta receives the prestigious Grand Honors Award of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), in Boston, at the hands of Prof. Dr. Eric Donnenfield, the President of the ASCRS.
Dear Beroze, The Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS precision laser is the latest and most advanced cataract system. This latest system breaks up the cataract liquefies it without entering the eye with the help of the laser. Then the liquefied fragments are sucked out and
the new lens is injected
The entire process is over
in less than 40 seconds. Thus the name Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS laser system. Since you are a diabetic and a high blood pressure patient, this new Bladeless Femtosecond CATALYS laser
system is ideal for you. Let me explain how this new CATALYS Laser Cataract System would benefit you and other patients just like you. In the older cataract surgical unit we had to cut the eye through a micro incision which naturally would heal but since an incision was made, there was a little blood. With the CATALYS is NO BLADE so NO CUTTING. The laser that liquefies the cataract and so there is no bleeding. The system works only on the cataract and on no other part of the eye. Since nothing touches the eye, except the laser light, it is totally PAINLESS. This makes it extremely VERY SAFE for patients with DIABETES and BLOOD PRESSURE. Since it is a laser it makes it more accurate as the surgeon can then decide at
which angle he would need to enter the eye. The hardest and the most difficult cataracts can be done very easily without any difficulty and the recovery is also much faster. So don’t fear as you will be in very safe hands and also, with the safest and most advanced cataract system for your cataract surgery. As you are a DIABETIC and a HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE patient, you DO NOT STOP any of your medication and also remember, NO STOPPING YOUR BLOOD THINNERS either. You would just need a detailed evaluation prior fixing for your surgery. For further information CALL:

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2015 solid food for more than three days. Dealing with the constant cravings for solid food can take a toll on your state of mind. n A liquid diet can damage your metabolism in the long run. n Remember when we were talking about how liquid diets help you lose weight, but only initially? Well, after that, your body goes into starvation mode and actually starts storing fat rather than burning it. So, after a point of time, you won’t see any weight loss or worse still, will actually gain weight! n Avoiding solid food for too long can lead to dehydration, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, tooth decay, constipation, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as gallbladder problems such as gallstones.
A sAmplE liquiD DiET One of the most important aspects of a liquid diet is striking a balance. While having a nutritionist draw up a plan for you is the best idea, this sample chart by Dr. Riddhesh will give you a general overview. Telling us about the benefits of following this diet, he says, “This diet can solve several health problems as it can cause a reduction in blood lipids, blood sugars, and blood pressure. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol can reduce their medications due to the health benefits of a liquid diet.”

TO DETOX YOuR sYsTEm Liquid diets are considered to be the most effective detoxification tool. Dr. Riddhesh tells us, “Liquid diets give your digestive system a break and help to cleanse your system. The goal of an all-liquid cleanse is to target your liver, and help it too flush out toxins that are stored in your fat cells. A liquid diet can also revive your metabolism and boost energy.”
TWO siDEs OF ThE cOin Going on a liquid diet has its pros and cons. Dr. Riddhesh suggests a few points that you must bear in mind if you’re planning on switching to a liquid diet. Consider the following in order to find out whether a liquid diet is a good idea for you.
ThE ADvAnTAgEs
n A liquid diet helps to clean your colon,
which is a known breeding ground for intestinal organisms. This will lower your risk of suffering from infections. n Such diets are beneficial for those who suffer from digestive problems or have undergone a medical procedure. In both situations, you won’t be able to obtain the required nutrients through a normal diet. A liquid diet, on the other hand, will
provide your body with the fluids, electrolytes and energy that it needs. It will also clear out your stomach and intestines and reduce the strain on your digestive system for a short period of time. n Liquid diets are quite low in calories, so the drastic switch from a high-calorie diet to a liquid diet can help you lose a few kilos. The initial weight loss that is seen with a liquid diet is incomparable to any other diet. However, remember that initial is the operative word here.
sOmE OF ThE DisADvAnTAgEs n The biggest concern with a liquid diet is
that it puts you at a risk of malnutrition, especially if you’ve been following it for a long period of time. n While liquid diets provide your body with a sufficient amount of nutrients that it can’t get from other sources, you will lose out on the carbohydrates, fats and proteins that your body needs in order to function properly in the long run. n Some liquid diets contain high levels of sugar and preservatives, which not only damage your system, but also defeat the very purpose of going on a liquid diet. n You also need to consider the mental aspect — it may seem easy, but it is actually very difficult to go without eating

We’re sure that by now you understand that while a liquid diet can be good for you, you have to be careful about how to go about it. Mansi gives us a few tips that you must follow if you want to try a liquid diet. n You need to ensure that you eat or drink something every two or three hours. n Planning your diet properly and distributing the fluids through the day (in the right quantity) will ensure that there’s a smooth supply of energy, which, unless you’re well-informed about such matters, can be difficult to do. So, it’s a good idea to consult a nutritionist instead of planning a liquid diet on your own. n When you’re consuming a fluid-based diet as a patient or because you suffer from a medical condition, remember to use sterile water while preparing your meals. n Never prepare fluid-based meals in advance just to save time — in order to ensure that your meals are as nutritious as possible you should prepare fresh food just before you’re going to eat it. n Don’t limit your diet to vegetables and fruits. Make sure that you include foods such as dal, milk and eggs in fluid form in order to ensure that you’re getting enough protein and that your meals are well-balanced. n Other foods that are full of nutrients and are already in liquid form or can easily be converted to liquids, include ragi, porridge, rasam, coconut water and lassi.

Miracle Misconceptions Specials foods conferring all sorts of benefits from cancer prevention to diabetes control have been in the spotlight over the years. But, are they really so beneficial? Anindra Siqueira clears the air about miracle foods and their equally miraculous claims
S
ince a time before we had internet, there have been claims about certain foods conferring wondrous benefits on your body. The consumption of a single food item can supposedly stave off heart disease, diabetes and even cancer! But, does it really? There was a time when kale was touted as a food that had everything. Now, it’s chia seeds and spirulina. So, how miraculous are these miracle foods? Read on to find out whether the tall claims of such foods are true and if they have any bearing on your health. How can a simple (and cheap) solution be so effective at getting rid of your bulging belly in time for summer? That’s a question that Dara Mohammadi of The Guardian asks in an article that picks at the mysticism and dogma surrounding socalled miracle foods such as chia seeds, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, manuka honey and spirulina. For one, there’s not much scientific evidence to back the existence of these miracle foods. Science hasn’t been able to confirm a direct and irrefutable link between substances in these foods and a reduced risk or prevention of diseases. Suman Agarwal, nutritionist, fitness consultant and owner of Selfcare India, talks to us about these foods. “Most of the research that’s been done lacks evidence and, for the most part, miracle foods should be seen as marketing gimmicks,” she tells us. “However, although they lack miraculous properties, these foods do have some beneficial effects. For instance, the antioxidant properties in foods such as apple cider vinegar and chia seeds can help reduce your risk of suffering from cancer, while manuka honey does have antibiotic and antibacterial properties, as it contains hydrogen peroxide and methyl glycosyl compounds.” Justin Stebbing, a consultant oncologist and professor of cancer medicine and oncology at Imperial College London, who was quoted in The Guardian article, makes another cogent argument. There is certainly no such thing as an anti-cancer diet, he says. Yes, miracle foods have antioxidants; this much is true. But, does that make these foods good for you? After all, antioxidants are good. They have anti-ageing properties. Ergo they must be good for your, right? Not just by that logic. Yes, antioxidants are helpful when it comes to making sure that your body doesn’t age faster than it should because of
>> Antioxidant rich foods such as blueberries do have several benefits, but stop short of possessing miraculous properties random ageing events — such as free radicals, because of their oxidative nature, stripping electrons from your DNA. But, our bodies naturally produce several antioxidants including glutathione and uric acid. In fact, the most commonly found antioxidants in our bodies are the those that we produce ourselves. For the most part, antioxidants in plant sources such as chia seeds are mainly present in order to prevent plant oils from turning rancid. They may not be so helpful to our bodies anyway. Furthermore, studies have
found that when they’re taken in the form of supplements, antioxidants don’t seem to have much of an effect. Suman says, “While these claims may not have substantial evidence to prove that certain foods have anti-cancer properties, you can stay nutritionally fit by eating foods that are rich in protein, iron and essential vitamins, and by living a healthy lifestyle, getting enough sleep, maintaining your vitamin D3 levels, practising meditation and exercising regularly.” Another fact that you must remember is that most studies are done on animals or on human cells in the lab. They may not have the same effect on people. Until such effectiveness is shown, it’s better to keep an open mind, but stay cautious about claims that seem too good to be true.

Certain foods are good for you when they’re consumed alone, but they’re even better when combined with other equally beneficial ones! Anindra Siqueira looks at whether there’s any truth to the oatmeal and orange juice combination
W
e’re sure that you’ve read this statement — oats are good for you. A serving of oatmeal does make for a good breakfast treat because it’s not only tasty, it also keeps you feeling full for longer. The ability to reduce LDL cholesterol — the bad kind — has been attributed to oatmeal. It is high in fibre, as are many foods, but the soluble fibre in oatmeal has been linked to various cardiovascular benefits such as a reduced risk of high blood pressure. It also contains antioxidants, like most superfoods do. Oatmeal has one called avenanthramide, which is thought to prevent your arteries from hardening. The magnesium that is present in oatmeal, coupled with the beta-glucan soluble fibre, helps to control blood glucose levels. They have even been associated with decreased insulin resistance, which means that they are good for those who suffer from diabetes. Orange juice needs no introduction. It is high in vitamin C, a water-soluble nutrient that isn’t harmful in excess. Vitamin C is required for the healthy production of collagen, a substance that is essential for making and maintaining bones, ligaments, blood vessels and other connective tissue. It also contains magnesium, a
>> Orange juice boosts the absorption of iron, which oatmeal is rich in
nutrient that is crucial for your body’s cell transport mechanism (which moves other nutrients in and out of your cells), and so helps to maintain regular blood pressure. Drinking orange juice has been connected with decreased levels of LDL cholesterol, but how this works is still unknown. It also contains flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. When these two are combined in a meal, it seems as though oats and orange juice have a complementary effect. Oatmeal contains one of the highest proportions of iron per serving. The vitamin C in orange juice boosts iron absorption, which is why eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast along with a glass of orange juice is a good idea. The orange juice allows your body to absorb more iron from the oats. There are also claims that phenols (organic compounds in both oatmeal and orange juice) help to stabilise your cholesterol levels when these two are eaten together. There is also a study done by the Antioxidants Research Lab at the US Department of Agriculture that says that combining oatmeal and orange juice cleans your arteries and decreases your risk of heart attacks by twice as much as eating either food alone would!

Drink water One of the most common causes of dizziness is dehydration. So, one of the first steps that you should take when you’re feeling light-headed is to drink a glass of water — but, don’t gulp it down. Instead, take small sips until the symptoms go away. If this doesn’t help and only if you don’t suffer from blood pressure issues, you can alleviate symptoms by making an oral rehydrating solution. Do this by using a ready-to-make packet or by mixing 1tsp each of salt and sugar in a glass of water.
«
Check medication Certain medication, especially antibiotics and those that are used to treat/combat blood pressure problems, cancer and pain, can cause you to feel light-headed and throw your body balance off. So if you need to take medicines every day, make sure to find out about their sideeffects and talk to your doctor about what you can do to fix this.
stop feeling dizzy From menstruation and fasting to smoking and physical exertion, there are several reasons you may suffer from a bout of dizziness. Dev Goswami gives you a few ways to prevent and treat it Eat something sweet Sugar is one of the best sources of instant energy. Anything that contains sugar such as chocolate, mithai and fruit juices will raise your blood sugar levels, which, if low, can cause dizziness. So, if you’re prone to light-headedness, it will be a good idea to have some sort of sweet on you, which you can eat if you feel off-balance.
5
Talk to yourself Yes, you read that right! Talking to yourself helps when you’re struck by a particularly severe bout of dizziness and will keep you from passing out. The simple process of talking to yourself — out loud or mentally — will help you remain alert and will ease the feeling of lightheadedness to an extent.
Eat ginger Ginger is a wonder food. One of its many benefits is that it helps cure dizziness. So much so, that people who suffer from vertigo should nibble on some ginger root before climbing heights. So, if you’re at home, biting on a ginger root will really help alleviate the symptoms of dizziness.

8
Prevent it For those who are prone to feeling dizzy, whether it is because of bad lifestyle habits or conditions such as anaemia or menopause, it is a good idea to take steps that will prevent it from happening altogether. Make sure that when you’re standing up, you do so slowly. When you’re getting up after lying down for a while, sit up slowly and stay at the edge of your bed for a few minutes before standing up. This will prepare your body and lower your chances of suffering from a dizzying spell.
9
Rest If you’ve contracted a cold or the flu, you should remember that, these viral illnesses sometimes come along with a feeling of light-headedness . Resting not only prevents you from feeling dizzy, but it will also speed up your recovery. So, make sure that you don’t physically exert yourself when you’re sick.
cramping up?
When you’re writing an exam and don’t have any time to relax, you can’t really afford to have your hand cramp up. Dev Goswami suggests you answer these questions to find out whether the way you write is giving you writer’s cramp 1. When you’re thinking about the answer to a particular question, do you tend to squeeze your pen? a. Yes. b. No. 2. Does your pen have an extremely thin body with no rubber grip? a. Yes. b. No. 3. Mime as though you’re writing — do only your wrists and fingers move when you’re writing? a. Yes. b. No. 4. Do you usually need to press hard on to the paper in order to ensure that ink flows smoothly? a. Yes. b. No.
6
Reset your body Sometimes your body’s perception of depth and balance can go off, which can make you dizzy. Combat this by closing your eyes and covering your ears for a few minutes. This helps restore your body’s equilibrium and eases the symptoms of dizziness.

« quick quiz to know yourself 4
Stop what you’re doing Think of feeling dizzy as your body’s alarm bell — it is a sign that there is something wrong and you need to address it. Whether it happens when you’re working at your desk or when you’re at your job, stop whatever you’re doing, breathe deeply and put yourself together. Usually, dizziness indicates a lack of blood supply to your brain, and you can remedy this by bending yourself so that your head is lower than your chest — this will boost blood-flow to your brain.

10 ways to:
>> Taking a few short breaks while writing can actually help you write faster
5. When you’re jotting down an essay, do you take a break of 1-2 seconds between sentences? a. No. b. Yes. 6. While you’re writing, do you tend to lean over and let your arms support your body weight? a. Yes. b. No. Mostly As You need to change the way you sit and write, in order to avoid hand cramps. Sitting for a two-hour long exam will be difficult if you don’t improve your habits. First of all, get a good quality pen that has a wide barrel and a comfortable grip. Ensure that it writes well so that you do not have to press against the paper and unnecessarily put pressure on your wrists. Avoid holding your pen too tightly and remember to take a break of a few seconds while writing — the breaks will let your arm relax and will actually help you write faster. Also, sit straight — if you lean over, your body needs to be supported by your elbows and wrists, which can cause your hand to cramp. Finally, while writing, remember to use your entire arm and keep your wrists as neutral as possible. Mostly Bs If you suffer from a cramp every time you write, it could be because of other physiological reasons, which you should get checked. Based on your answers, we can tell you with a certainty that the way you write isn’t the reason that your hand starts aching after you’ve been writing for a while.
ho can deny the unavoidable charm of Holi celebrations? The incessant revelry, a refreshing glass of thandai on a warm afternoon and the splashes of colour — all these are enough to have you brimming with joy! However, we’re sure that you’re aware of the harmful effects of the colours that are used during Holi. Several colours such as gulaal contain chemical-based dyes, which cause a host of skin problems. This is why, just as we take preventive measures to shield our skin from the harmful effects of colour, it is essential that we have a good restorative post-Holi skincare session as well. Find out if yours does enough to undo the damage 1) You drink water before and after you play Holi. a) True b) False. 2) Once you are done playing with colours for the day, you head straight for the shower in order to wash off the colour. a) True. b) False. 3) You use a moisturising cleanser to wash the colour off your face before heading for a bath. a) True. b) False. 4) You avoid scrubbing your skin vigorously while removing the colour. a) True. b) False.
8) You’re aware that the colour may not come off in one wash and so, avoid trying to rinse it off with multiple tries, using soap. a) True. b) False. 9) You apply olive oil or coconut oil to your skin, before a shower for a week after Holi. a) True. b) False. 10) You use as many moisturising products on your skin as possible. a) True. b) False. Mostly As Well, most of us are aware of how harsh those colours can be on our skin. While there are people who choose to ignore these effects, you are aware of what’s best for your skin. You go all out when it comes to taking preventive measures before and after you decide to get drenched in colour. Keep up the good work! Mostly Bs If you are surprised about why your skin is feeling irritated so many days after Holi, it’s because you haven’t been taking enough care. While you are aware that the colours used on the day of Holi aren’t really natural, you have chosen to ignore the obvious and you stay put with your usual skincare routine. We suggest that you read our box on how to take good care of your skin.
POST-HOLI SKIN CARE Getting that stubborn colour off your skin and out from under your nails can be tricky. And what’s even worse than colour that refuses to come off is the damaged skin that follows. Take a look at some of the essential post-Holi skin care tips that will pamper your skin after a rough day amongst all that colour. n Drink as much water as possible, both before and after playing with colour. Chugging water will help you retain the moisture in your skin. Besides, you spend a lot more energy playing than you think, so drink up! n Head for the shower as soon as you are done playing so that you can get rid of any colour that is still wet. It will come off easily and you won’t spend so much time in the shower. n Avoid taking hot, steamy showers as the heat opens up your pores and causes colour to clog up inside your pores. Take a shower with lukewarm water instead. n Apply baby oil, pure coconut or olive oil even a few days after Holi to ensure that your skin stays moisturised. n Before you head to the shower, use a moisturising cleanser to remove any colour from your face. This will break down any hard, dry colour on your skin, making it easier to wash off. n Avoid scrubbing your skin vigorously while removing the colour, as your skin will get irritated and this will just aggravate your problems.
5) You always remember to take a shower with cool or lukewarm water and use a gentle, antibacterial soap instead of your regular soap. a) True. b) False. 6) You try to use as many natural ingredients as possible to remove the colour from your skin. a) True. b) False. 7) You use natural cooling agents such as aloe vera and glycerine to prevent any allergic reactions to the colour. a) True. b) False.

It’s not surprising to come across children who are barely in their teens complaining about severe physiological problems. Yamini Walia tells you about what may be causing these problems and what you can do about them
Y
our body undergoes numerous changes when you are an adolescent (which usually is between 17-20). The years leading up to adulthood are crucial for your child’s growth and development, but an over-dependence on technological comforts, lack of physical activity and harmful habits can subject children to several physical problems. It is important to identify these problems in time in order to ensure that there is a better foundation for them to begin adulthood. We spoke to Dr. Anjana Laungani, a consultant physiotherapist at PhysioRehab, who told us about the various factors that harm your child.
hEavy school Bags Your children’s spines are still in the developing stage when they’re attending school. And, a heavy school bag can cause several spine-related problems. Dr. Anjana explains, “Having to lug around an excessive load leads to upper and lower back problems. Carrying a school bag on one shoulder can also result in a condition known as scoliosis, which is a curvature in the spine that leads to several muscular imbalances.”
that we’re talking about competitive sports — this doesn’t mean that you stop your child from playing with other children. All you need to do is be extra careful in order to avoid long-term injuries.
>> Dependence on technology, the lack of physical activity and harmful habits result in severe physical problems
oBEsity Obesity, especially among children, is becoming an increased cause of concern worldwide. “The leading cause of obesity in children is a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. This results in a reduction in the utilisation of their body’s energy stores, causing the excess energy to be stored as fat,” says Dr. Anajana. Apart from the physical problems, obesity can result in a variety of social and emotional problems such as stigmatisation and low self-esteem.
ExcEssivE gadgEt usE Children are becoming more and more dependent on technology. “Excessive use of gadgets can strain their neck and upper back muscles, which could lead to postural abnormalities,” says Dr. Anajana. Apart from affecting their spine, constantly typing and jabbing at a mobile phone or a tablet can put them at the risk of suffering from arm, wrist and finger injuries, because of the constant stress that these organs are put under.
BiomEchanical causEs Children’s bones are softer than adult bones, because they are still in their formative stage. This makes them prone to suffering from improper alignment, especially due to bad body posture. The feet, hip, knees and lower back are all regions that can be affected because of these alignment issues, which not only causes pain, but also affects regular body growth. Dr. Anajana explains, “These improper alignments can cause early wear and tear of the joints and can also strain the soft tissue structures, which can result in a wide variety of problems.”
ExpErt advicE
In order to keep your children safe from these problems, Dr. Anajana lists out a few tips that you should keep in mind. School bags should not exceed 10% of your children’s bodyweight. Parents should ensure that their children take regular breaks from their gadgets, during which you should encourage them to move and stretch around. Look for ways to incorporate exercise into your child’s routine. A physical therapist can help develop an exercise plan for your child based on his/ her capacity, helping to reduce the chances of an injury. Getting your child screened by a physiotherapist can help identify the musculoskeletal issues relevant to a particular sport. If addressed early, you’ll be able to prevent or reduce the risk of future injuries.
sports injuriEs Young children, especially those who are younger than eightyears-old, have slower reactions and are less co-ordinated as compared to adults. In addition, children mature at different ages. There is often a substantial difference in height and weight between children of the same age. And, when children of different sizes and strength play together, they are at an increased risk of suffering from injuries. But, remember

ince the ’90s, fitness instructors have stood by the plank and its ability to build your core. The plank works well on your core muscles (if you do it correctly!), but many beginners report feeling exhausted after the exercise. If your muscles start to quiver when doing a plank, rest. This is normal. But, shifting your weight to your shoulders or raising your bottom to compensate for the strain that is being put on your core are examples of bad form and defeat the purpose of a plank. Also, you shouldn’t hold a plank in the wrong position just to reach a set time.
corrEct form
When doing planks, get your form correct. Bad posture can cause more harm than good. To do the basic plank correctly, get into a modified push-up position, with your forearms on the ground. Your elbows should be bent at a 90° angle directly below your shoulders. The rest of your body should form a straight line (or a plank) from your head to your heels.
>> Planks work your core and are a great way to tone your abdominal muscles
changE things up
Your body will get accustomed to a certain type of exercise if you do it over and over again. The exercise will also have less of an effect over time. Modify your routine to make sure that you get the most out of your workout. Here are a few variations that you can perform once you’ve mastered the basic plank. n Arm extensions: This is a basic plank, with one arm extended forward at a time. n Push-up plank: Instead of resting on your elbows, rest on your palms or fists. n Single leg plank: Lift one leg and rest on your toes of the other foot. This increases the demand on your core. Switch legs. n Side plank: One forearm and the outside of your corresponding ankle rests on the ground. Switch sides occasionally.

menopause misery >> Excessive itching around the vagina is a sign of a yeast infection
Our bodies contain a form of yeast called candida, which aids in the digestive process. However, if your body has a candida overgrowth, you could suffer from adverse symptoms and effects. Dev Goswami tells you more about candida overgrowth
F
J
ust like how our body needs a certain healthy amount of bacteria in order to function well, it also needs candida (specifically Candida albicans), a yeast that is found in small quantities (your immune system keeps the quantity at a controlled level) in your mouth, intestine and around your genitals. Your body needs candida in order to effectively break down food and absorb it into the bloodstream. However, a candida overgrowth, which can happen because of several factors (see box to find out), can see the yeast breaking down the walls of your intestine and escaping into your bloodstream, adversely affecting your system. A candida overgrowth can show up with several symptoms and affects everyone differently. Take a look:
Oral candidiasis Also known as thrush, a candida overgrowth in your mouth or throat is called oral cadidiasis. Healthy adults are usually not prone to suffering from this — this is more commonly seen amongst infants, the elderly, patients on chemotherapy and those with a weakened immune system (which could be the result of conditions such as AIDS). The symptoms include white spots inside your mouth and on your tongue, redness around your mouth, a sore throat and cracking at the corners of your lips. While treatment is fairly simple (usually in the form of an anti-fungal mouthwash or pill), it shouldn’t be taken lightly, because if the yeast spreads into your bloodstream, your condition can get aggravated.
infectiOn Of the genitals Common among women, vaginal yeast infections display symptoms such as excessive itching, coupled with soreness and redness around your vagina. You could also experience clumpy vaginal discharge and painful sexual intercourse. Though rare, it also affects some men (especially those who are uncircumcised) and will show signs such as rashes, itching and burning around the tip of the penis. One-off infections can be treated with a cream or a suppository pill. However, if you’re prone to suffering from this kind of infection, you may have to

Proper medical attention will prevent this condition from getting serious.
diaper rash While not all diaper rashes are caused because of a yeast infection, watch out for those that are accompanied by dark red patches of skin and yellow, fluid-filled spots, as both of these are signs of a yeast-related diaper rash. Treatment is fairly simple and includes medicated ointment, cream or powder that needs to be applied to the affected area.
invasive infectiOn The most dangerous form of candida overgrowth is one where the yeast escapes into your bloodstream. Once it does, it can travel all around your body and reach places where this micro-organism

shouldn’t be present. It is commonly seen in those who suffer from a compromised immune system, as their immune response isn’t strong enough to control the growth of candida. Since it can spread to all of your body parts, the symptoms of an invasive infection can be vague and hard to spot. Suffering from a fever and chills, even after you’ve taken antibiotics, is usually a sign of an invasive yeast infection. If not promptly addressed, it can take on a life-threatening avatar. The condition is treated with anti-fungal medication that is administered orally or through an IV line for several weeks.
the effects A candida overgrowth can be fatal, but that’s rare. It can however have a range of other effects: n Painful gas and bloating. n Constipation or diarrhoea. n Eczema and acne. n Weight gain. n Migraines. n Depression. n Food insensitivity.
or us women, just the thought of menopause makes us cringe. Hot flashes, which make menopause extremely intolerable, can last for an average of seven years (that’s right!) and in most cases, for as long as 10 years, according to a study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The study, which was carried out between 19962013, focussed on 1,449 women from various ethnic groups, who exhibited frequent vasomotor symptoms, also known as hot flashes. The researchers reported in the American Medical Association’s JAMA Internal Medicine that these women showcased their symptoms on at least six days over a period of two weeks. Women who still got their periods when the hot flashes started, ended up suffering from the symptoms of menopause for the longest period of time — nearly 12 years on an average! On the other hand, women who didn’t exhibit the symptoms until after their final menstrual cycle, had to deal with these effects for just a little over three years. Women of Japanese and Chinese descent reported symptoms that lasted for five years, while hispanic women reported nearly nine years of the misery. The researchers explained, “These findings can help health care professionals counsel patients about the expectations regarding vasomotor symptoms and assist women in making medical decisions based on the probability of their symptoms persisting.”

Dear Barbara, I got my nose pierced a couple of months ago. This is the second time that I’ve had it pierced — I had to let my earlier piercing close up because it hadn’t healed properly. Unfortunately, I am facing the same problem again. The piercing has not healed and still feels sore and irritated. I don’t know how to deal with this and I really don’t want to give up on my piercing! What should I do? — Kanchan Das, mahim Dear Kanchan, Piercings generally heal within three to four weeks and don’t usually take so long to heal. One of the reasons it may not have healed yet is that your skin is sensitive to the jewellery that you wear. Try switching to wearing gold instead of sterling silver or artificial jewellery, both of which are known to irritate your skin. You can also try making salt soaks by mixing sea salt with water and dabbing it on to the area around your piercing using a cotton ball. If none of this helps, your best bet is to get the piercing checked by a dermatologist. Dear Barbara, Since the past week, I have noticed that my gums bleed every time I brush my teeth. They don’t bleed at any other time of the day and I have no problem eating or drinking cold food or drinks. I brush my teeth twice a day and initially suspected that my gums were bleeding because I was brushing too hard. So, I tried brushing gently, but it hasn’t helped either. Can you tell me why this is happening? — mahima Krishnan, andheri Dear mahima, Since you have mentioned that you feel no sensitivity in your gums and have also tried to be gentler while brushing your teeth, we think that you may be suffering from a gum disease such as gingivitis, which is usually caused by plaque buildup. However, consult your dentist before jumping to any conclusions or trying any treatments. Other probable reasons include hormonal changes in your body, ill-fitting dentures or a deficiency in vitamin K. There are a number of home remedies for bleeding gums that you can try, but make sure that you consult a doctor first.

our eyes are usually the first thing that people notice and so, you need to make sure that they look perfect. While eye makeup can enhance your appearance, your eyelashes can make or break your look. Everyone wants thicker lashes, so today we’re helping you out with a few tips that will help you get fuller, thicker lashes.
remove eye maKeuP This is the most important and the most basic step when you’re trying to thicken your eyelashes. Dr. Siddhi Chavan, a dermatologist at Dermatherapie Centre, tells us, “Taking off your eye makeup before you go to bed every night is essential. Mascara can be quite heavy on your eyelashes and can cause them to fall off.” Also, remember to use a good makeup remover in order to easily take off your eye makeup, without causing any irritation.
faKe it less If you intend to wear fake lashes in order to make your eyelashes look fuller, make sure that you don’t wear them for a prolonged period of time. Dr. Siddhi explains, “Fake eyelashes can damage your natural lashes, so avoid wearing them for long periods of time as the synthetic glue can cause some of your natural lashes to come off.”
no curlers Steer clear of eyelash curlers while you’re following our tips or avoid using them altogether. Using eyelash curlers will sabotage your efforts as they weaken your lashes and cause them to fall off.
moisturise it well
Precautionary measures
You should moisturise your eyes in order to keep them healthy. Dr. Siddhi explains, “Moisturise the skin around your eyes on a daily basis with a light-weight moisturiser — choose one that is fortified with vitamin E, natural oils and minerals. Dry eyelids can cause allergies and can also lead to breakage.”
natural remeDies There are several natural ways to make your eyelashes appear fuller. Dr. Siddhi explains, “Applying olive or castor oil every night will thicken your eyelashes and help them to look fuller. You can apply petroleum jelly as well.” >> Consult a doctor before trying any treatments for bleeding gums
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2015
Brush Daily You should groom your eyelashes the same way that you groom your hair. Brush
them at least twice a day with an eyelash comb. Coat your brush with a few drops of vitamin E oil or apply it directly on to your lashes. This will stimulate lash growth and thicken your lashes. You can also use a clean mascara brush if you don’t have an eyelash brush.
Dr. Vinod Vij, senior cosmetic surgeon at Nova Speciality Hospitals, lists out a few precautionary measures that you should follow in order to protect your eyelashes. n In our day-to-day life, there is the chance of dirt or dandruff accumulating on your eyelashes. So, you should gently clean your eyelashes as well as your eyes. n Replace your mascara every two to four months. n Avoid using permanent colours or dyes on your eyelashes. n Never share your cosmetics with a friend. You may transfer bacteria into your eye, which can contaminate your eyes.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Tuesday (March 10, 2015) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Monday (March 09, 2015) a net 181 points (2.03%) and closed at the 8756 point level. The market opened down with a gap on weak global cues at the 8891 points level and that level itself was the high of the session. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 3.00 p.m. The index then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 8740 points level at 3.29 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 151 points and closed below the psychologically important 8800 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 44 were losers, while just 6 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices barring healthcare closed in the red. Substantial selling was witnessed in banking, power and capital goods stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 3.99%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 416 were gainers, 1047 were losers and 31 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI fell and crossed below the 60 level and is now declining (negative if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It has crossed below its 9-day Average (negative and a sell signal).
Has dropped below its 25-day average (at 8783) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 8077) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a neutral market but with a negative bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 8608 points level. The next support is at the 8509 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8989 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8796 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8701; Support (2) = 8645. Resistance (1) = 8852; Resistance (2) = 8947. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a large black body candle on higher volumes. This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index has dropped below its 15 and 25 day moving averages. The index is now below its 5, 15 and 25 day moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were positively trended have now turned negative. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at current levels.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is decreasing in strength. MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 8914) Negative. Has dropped below its 15-day average (at 8846) Negative.

Global food prices fell to a nearly five-year low in February this year on increased supply of key food items and strong US dollar, according to the United Nations food agency FAO. Food prices averaged at 179.4 points in February, down from 181.2 points in January and 208.6 points in February 2014, the Food and Agriculture Organization's price index showed. FAO's Food Price Index is a trade-weighted index that tracks prices of five major food commodity groups on international markets. It aggregates price sub-indices of cereals, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils and sugar. "Food Price Index declined to a 55-month low in February, dropping 1.0 per cent from January and 14 per cent below its level a year earlier," FAO said in a statement. The Food Price index at its lowest level since July 2010 reflects robust supply conditions as well as ongoing weakness in many currencies versus the US dollar, said Michael Griffin, FAO's dairy and livestock market expert.

Sebi Directs Mega Mould, Promotech To Refund Investors’ Money By A Business reporter
T
ightening its noose on the Kolkata-based I-Core Group for illicit fund-raising activities, Sebi has asked two of its promoter entities to refund nearly Rs 900 crore collected from the investors, while also referring the case to other agencies like RBI, SFIO and ED. If the refund orders are not complied with, Sebi has also warned the two companies - Mega Mould India and Promotech Infratech, and their promoters, of prosecution proceedings and a criminal case for fraud and cheating, followed by a winding-up process to recover the funds. Sebi has already passed an order against I-Core EServices, whose promoters have floated these two companies as well and all three of them have been found to have indulged in illicit fund-raising activities by dup-
ing the gullible investors, reports PTI. A probe by Sebi had found that Mega Mould raised Rs 888 cr through issuance of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs), while Promotech Infratech issued NCDs worth Rs 11.44 cr, without complying with the regulatory provisions applicable for a public issue. Sebi noted that as the issue by these companies were made to 50 or more persons, the company was under a legal obligation to get listed on a stock exchange. Among others, it was also mandatory for the firms to bring out a prospectus with respect to the public issue. As per two separate orders dated March 5, Mega Mould and Promotech Infratech and their directors have been asked "to jointly and severally" refund the money collected by these companies through the issuance of NCDs. In case of delay in making the repayments, they have
been directed to return the money collected from its investors with an interest of 15% p.a. The companies have been asked to issue public notices detailing modalities for refund, including details of the investors within 15 days of the order. The directors have also been restrained from associating themselves with any listed public company and any public company which intends to raise money from the public for four years. Mega Mould, Promotech Infratech and their director have also been prohibited from the securities market for four years. Sebi further said that it will make a reference to the Corporate Affairs Ministry to initiate the process of winding up of the company, while it "shall also initiate attachment and recovery proceedings" in the event of failure to comply with its directions.

‘W
oodstock’ is a special place on the musical map of the world. It is somewhere in the vicinity of New York. It is a world famous venue of a festival of world music in which celebrated sitarist like Ravi Shankar played in the late 1960s to the accompaniment of tabla maestro Alla Rakha Khan. Their performance was not only appreciated but they became icons after the event. Steeve Gorn, the American flautist belongs to this same Woodstock. He was originally a Jazz musician. After listening to the shehnai of Bismillah Khan he was not only attracted to Hindustani music but became a devout practitioner of that art. For him, Pannalal Ghosh, the original bansuri wizard was the idol and he worshiped him through Ghosh's pupil Goswami and then through his discipleship under Raghunath Seth. Steeve performed under the aegis of the Shivaji Park Nagarik Sangh last week.
beautiful bandish in the raga 'Shyam Kalyan'. It was the most lilting piece of melody. Bhushan Parchure lent superb support on the tabla. Kalyani Salunke, the Thane-based vocalist is a pupil of her father Purushottam Pande. She also trained under Vasantrao Kulkarni and Dr Ashok Ranade. She sings in a sweet voice and her voice is as thin as that of a playback singer. She sang the raga 'Hindoli' in this programme. This raga is deceptively similar to the better known 'Bhinnashadj'. Kalyani seems to have adopted Kishori Amonkar as her role model. She also sang an abhang popularized by Amonkar. Abhay Datar on the tabla and Anant Joshi on the harHis bansuri was smooth and had a monium lent superb support. Chanplacid tone. There is nothing un-Indian drashkhar Phanse and his pupils about his music. He first played the raga presented raga pieces on the sitar and 'Madhuvanti' which is a late afternoon surbahar at the P L Deshpande mini auraga. The balance between the note ditorium. The piece on the raga 'Jog' was teevra ma and shuddha re was nicely the best of the lot. Phanse is an active maintained. It was entirely developed teacher and has struggled a lot to achieve on a gayaki style. He followed up with a his present position.
Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan in full swing once again By Vijay Shanker
I
n spite of certain obstacles, the 57th Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan commenced last Sunday at the University Club House auditorium in Churchgate. Due to varied differences this festival was not held for a few years but due to to persistence of M K Patel, Janak Dalal and others, the week long festival of classical music and dance made a fine start with an elegant Odissi recital by Dhara Dutta. The first day of the dance session consisted of dancers Dhara Dutta, Pavitra Bhat, Rsika Kulkarni, Dhanashree Natu and Priya Admane from Pune, Suchitra Rane and Mayur Vaidya. Tall and lissome Dhara commenced her Odissi performance with the exquisite Pancha Akshara Slokam by Adi Shankaracharya that vividly describes the glory and grandeur of Lord Shiva as the Maheswara and Nataraja, the Lord of Gods in control of creation, preservation and destruction and as the king of dance. Dhara is the disciple of accomplished exponent Daksha Mashruwala and is blessed with the perfect personality of a Odissi dancer, which was quite evident in the exposition of the abhinaya and nritte sequences in the three items presented by her, the Shiva Stuti,
Anupam Kher returns to stage By Sandeep Hattangadi
“M
era Woh Matlab Nahi Tha”, a two-act Hindi play performed by the veteran Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta and Rakesh Bedi, written and directed by him (Rakesh Bedi) and produced by Actor Prepares Productions premiered on 8th March, 7 pm at the Tata theater, NCPA, Mumbai amidst an august gathering. Neena Gupta says, "I just had to come back to theater. I am very fortunate to have been offered this play and with such a talented team, no less. It is also very rare to find a new and original Hindi play script, especially such a well-written one. We have worked very hard and have enjoyed creating this play together”. Says Anupam Kher whose last play was the solo act ‘Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai' says, “I couldn’t get time for plays after my umpteen films but this play narration by Rakesh Bedi really im-
pressed me and I immediately gave my nod and I called up Rakesh and the other actors to Rajkot where I was shooting for Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Paiyyo’ to rehearse the play and gave it more than 40 days of my time for rehearsals”. “I wanted two mature and accomplished actors to play these roles.” says Rakesh Bedi. Rakesh Bedi when telling us about the theme of the play says, “Sometimes in life, the results of our endeavors may not match with its objectives. At such times, we can only shrug and say, 'Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha'. The play revolves around two such people who didn't mean to hurt each other, but eventually did. Set in Lodhi Garden, New Delhi, the play is about two lovers who drifted apart for no apparent reason. They meet 35 years later and try to discover the truth behind their separation.” An absolute must watch !
ashtapadi Sakhi. In Sakhi the heroine tells her friend to beckon Lord Krishna at once, as she is unable to bear the sufferings of separation and vividly recollects and remembers the moments of union. Dhara's expressions were subtle and natural and here is a dancer one can look forward to. One of the best male dancers of the city, Pavitra Bhat is the disciple of veteran mentor Guru Deepak Mazumdar. Pavitra started the performance with Mallari in Khandatrupata tala and Gambhirnatai in praise of Lord Shiva and the cosmic dance. Pavitra's movements, poses and the choreography by Deepak enthralled the audience as the dancer danced to perfect rhythm while portraying varied 'karanas' and characteristic movements attracting the attention of the audience. The Marathi abhang 'Paya Joduni', elevated the divine fervour while praising lord Vitthala. Pavitra concluced the performance with the intricate Vrindavanasaranga Thillana, danced to accuracy with the display of rhythmic complexity. While the Kathak and Kuchipudi dancers were partially pleasing, Mayur Vaidya with his students tried to create an impression but failed to do so. Moreover he has to check his weight if he wants to be a fine performer.

Pandit Birju Maharaj receives Lifetime Achievement award R
enowned Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj was recently honoured with the 'Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement' award for taking forward the legacy of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow and promoting the art form around the world. “This award is even more special to me because I have had the opportunity to listen to the music maestro and take his blessings. Since we all belong to the field of art, my father was friends with Khan saheb when he was in Delhi during 1944-45. So as a child, I used to go to Ustad Chand Khan sometimes and listen to him," Pandit Birju Maharaj told PTI in an interview. The award was conferred on Pandit Maharaj during the two day Sangeet Martand Ustad Chand Khan Music festival here, which saw raga rendition by some stalwarts in Indian classical music like Ajoy Chakraborty, Rajan-Sajan Misra, Subha Mudgal and Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan. Shubha Mudgal began her performance with raag Chhayanat and concluded with a semi-classical singing style popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, known as 'Hori.'

UMBAI: Riding on unbeaten centuries from K L Rahul and Karun Nair, defending champions Karnataka took firm control by finishing day two on a comfortable 323 for five in the Ranji Trophy cricket final. Karnataka have already secured a 189-run lead over their opponents with five wickets still remaining here at the Wankhede stadium. Rahul (131) and Nair (130) were unconquered at the end of day's play, which saw them overhaul Tamil Nadu's first innings paltry total of 134. Resuming at an overnight score of 45 for four, title the holders lost night watchman Abhimanyu Mithun (39) early to be reeling at 84 for five. Mithun was trapped leg before by off-spinner Malolan Rangarajan in the 11th over of the day, adding just 25 runs to his yesterday's score of 14. The 25-year-old hit 16 off the second over of the day, hitting Laxmipathy Balaji for three boundaries. Mithun's overnight partner, Karun Nair, having resumed at nine, carried on to notch up his first century of the season. He added 239 runs with Rahul for an unbeaten partnership for the sixth wicket. The Indian Test player Rahul hit 13 fours and a six to bring up his century. Rahul, who had retired hurt yesterday due to a hamstring pull after scoring one, batted pa-

Nair admitted that Rahul's injury posed a slight problem in the running between the wickets but they had decided not to take risky singles. "We discussed that we won't run any risky singles. "Looking at the less number of openings we gave away to our opponents so far, I think the team is doing very good in terms of structure and defence. We created good chances in the first game but in the second game against Poland we lacked in a few areas," Oltmans said. "But I am sure the future matches will be better. Our

Bangladesh knock out England; Likely to set up quarters clash with India
A
delaide: Bangladesh rose to the occasion to knock England out of the cricket World Cup with a 15-run win in the Pool A encounter, setting up a quarterfinal clash with defending champions India. Put into bat, Bangladesh rode on Mahmudullah's resilient century to post 275 for seven and then put up a spirited bowling show to pack England for 260 runs in 48.3 overs. Man of the Match Mahmudullah (103) struck his first ODI ton to lift Bangladesh from 99 for four to a respectable score after stitching a crucial 141-run fifth-wicket partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim (89). England medium pacers James Anderson and Chris Jordan bagged two wickets each. England started the chase on a decent note even after opener

Bangladesh bowlers, ably led by Robel Hossian (4-53), struck at crucial junctures to put England in trouble. Ian Bell tried to do the rescue act with a hard-working 63 but Hossian got the opener caught behind in the 27th over.

Sohail, who turned 31 on Friday, celebrated his birthday in style a day later when he dismissed the South Africa skipper who was threatening to take the Pool B match away from Pakistan in Auckland. England, chasing Bangladesh's 275 for seven in a match they had to win to remain in the tournament, were shot out for 260 in the penultimate over in the day-night match. But Morgan, struggling with his own batting form and dismissed for zero in the key game, said he was extremely disappointed at
the team's early exit. "Ultimately it's come down to the way we've performed and today was another example of us not performing or putting together a game of cricket," he said. "I am extremely disappointed, because within the group there was a lot of belief and expectation to go further than this. I think it's more a surprise than anything else," the former Ireland batsman added. "You need guys scoring runs, weight of runs, you need guys threatening with the ball or building pressure. We have not done that consistently." Morgan was parachuted in as full-time England one-day captain shortly before the World Cup after Test skipper Alastair Cook was axed.

WIN AGAINST IRELAND AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER

AMILTON: On the cusp of creating World Cup history, a supremely confident India will aim to crush a gutsy Ireland in their penultimate group encounter of the ICC cricket World Cup, here today. Having already qualified for the quarter-finals with four commanding wins, the defending champions are eyeing their fifth straight win in the tournament. If India happen to win today, it will create a new World Cup record of winning nine straight matches at the global event, starting from their win against the West Indies in Chennai during the 2011 edition. Their win against the Caribbeans in the previous match at Perth was their eighth successive win and that had equalled Sourav Ganguly's team's successful run during the 2003 edition in South Africa. It will be another David vs Goliath contest where India will be looking to maintain their supremacy over Ireland, who are seeking fourth spot in Pool B to make the quarter-final grade. Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja with six scalps apiece have done their job with equal efficiency and sincerity. One small piece of statistic will be testimony to the kind of influence the bowlers have had in the ongoing tournament, one should sample the economy rate of the fivepronged bowling attack. The ‘worst’ economy rate, if one dare to say so, is that of left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, whose economy rate has been a very decent 4.51 runs per over.
The normally profligate Umesh Yadav, often accused for leaking runs and being inconsistent, has been fantastic upfront with an economy rate of 4.33. Mohammed Shami, who has hit the best length among the Indian speedsters has given away only 100 runs in the 25 overs across three matches at a flat economy rate of flat 4 runs per over. Most of the teams have failed to read Ashwin’s offbreaks and the carom balls and the mean economy rate of 3.91 is a testimony to that.

Best chance of beating India is to restrict them: Porterfield
Hamilton: Ireland captain William Porterfield feels that the best chance for his team to beat India in the ICC Cricket World Cup group league encounter will be to restrict them to a reasonable total by taking wickets. "Look, obviously, we've got to try to restrict them with the ball and take wickets. It's just like any game of cricket and this format is the best way of restricting teams is taking those wickets. So we've got to go out there with that mentality throughout the 50 overs, with that of taking wickets. “Whatever we do first of the first 10 overs, is going to be big," Porterfield said on the eve of their match against the defending champions. The Irish skipper doesn't want to treat India as a special opponent and would go into the match like he would do for any other opposition. "No, it's like any other game. We've gotten into each game with two points up for grabs, and tomorrow isn't any different. We've approached each game with great clarity and great professionalism really from our point of view," the skipper said. But he did admit that things can change very quickly from this game.

Olympic bronze medallist Saina's quest for becoming the first Indian woman to win the All England championship ended in agony after she lost to Spain's Carolina Marin 2116 14-21 7-21 in the summit clash yesterday in Birmingham. "The first game was quite good. I started off very well. But I think she was also in good form and she gave me a tough time after that. FIA boss Jean Todt says India deserves Formula 1
M
UMBAI: Jean Todt, president of world motorsports governing body FIA, has said that India deserves Formula 1 and he hopes the dropped Grand Prix returns to the country in the near future. "It's (the race is not my responsibility). It is the commercial rights holder (FOM) who is discussing with the promoter ( Jaypee Group), with the country. Personally, as the president of FIA but more as a car enthusiast, I was happy to see an international circuit in India," Todt said here today. The Indian Grand Prix, which was dropped in 2014 after three editions owing to tax and bureaucratic hurdles, is expected to return next season, going by the wishes of F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and Jaypee Group. Todt said it was unfortunate the race was taken off the calendar after three successful editions. "Un-
fortunately, the circuit is used for other categories of motorsports. Next Sunday I head there is truck racing championship and it is used for other things too. Of course the initial thing was to host Formula One. India is one of the biggest countries in the world. Does it deserve Formula One, yes it does but I am not in charge of it," said the Frenchman. Talking about issues facing F1, Todt, a former team principal of Ferrari, said cost reduction remains FIA's prime focus. "This year hopefully we will have 10 teams. Being a pinnacle of motorsports, it's an expensive sport. We still need to work on one side to encourage Formula 1 supporting new technologies, always trying to enforce safety, and on the financial side find out ways to reduce the cost of Formula 1 because I feel Formula 1 is too expensive," he said. F1 has been grappling with high costs for some time and F1 team Marussia went out of business while another team Caterham went into administration. Asked on ways to limit the cost, Todt said, "In my opinion I don't think it is necessary to have 500-1000 people running a Formula 1 team. I think you can do with less people. I think you can highlight some technologies which could be cheaper. Maybe you need to go through standardisation of technologies, it is something we are continuously addressing." The 69-year old said the teams have to reduce the cost significantly. “We need to reduce significantly. The is no point in giving a figure. I will be happy to share the figure once we have achieved but we need to reduce it significantly," he said.

AIPUR: Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was removed as the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) president after a no confidence motion was passed against him by office bearers of the rival Amin Pathan group in an EGM here. Defending champions India will take on Ireland here in their fifth match of the World Cup and Gavaskar said they should settle for nothing less than a win. "Winning is the only thing that matters.
