ber cab General Manager Shailesh Sawlani was attacked by a man reportedly from the Swabhiman Sangathana as he was leaving the Transport Commissioner's office yesterday. The man slapped Sawlani, and then attempted to slap him again but without success. The identity of the attacker is not known. Earlier, the Swabhiman Sangathana had called for a ban on Uber cabs in Mumbai as well. The Sangathana has sent a letter to the transport commissioner, Mahesh Zagade, calling for a complete ban on radio taxis such as Meru, Genie, TABcab, Ola and so on. The drivers of the radio taxis do not maintain proper identification. Since the drivers do not have proper identification, untoward incidents could happen in Mumbai too, the letter stated. However, the private fleet

cabs operators insist that the verification system for drivers is proper. Jagdish Purohit, Managing Director, TABcab, said, “In case of any emergency, our Contact Centre immediately springs into action by tracking the cab, maintaining constant contact with the customer, alerting the Saathi Management Team who then maintain constant contact with the Saathi. The Saathi Management Team also starts networking with senior Saathis in the system to move towards the area/location of the emergency and to alert the liasoning and enforcement field teams who use their skilled networking to re-direct TABcab special forces towards the location of the emergency.”

CITY

SAVE THE CITY SPARROWS N

ature’s creation is bountiful. As a part of the scheme of nature, certain animals and birds are made to live with humans. This is what makes life beautiful. A city is a human settlement and crows, rock-pigeons, sparrows, mynas, etc. are among the birds that give company to the city dwellers. Over the decades this list has shrunk due to concretization and an uncaring attitude of the people. The birds that have survived are those who have adapted themselves to the harsh conditions of the city life. To start with, Crows are nature’s scavengers and perform many functions in the environment which goes unnoticed. They are called the ‘birds of opportunity’ as they teach us that no opportunity should be missed. The grey colored Rock Pigeons have always been a companion to the people in the city. The next bird in the list is the Sparrow. A cute, innocent, chirping bird, who builds its nests wherever it can, be it on the window sills, tops of the doors and almirahs and in the nooks and corners of buildings and trees, among which the Banyan and Peepal trees are the most suitable for their nests, because of the adequate space they allow for nesting. According to a study conducted by The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), which has taken initiatives to protect the nature, a lot of sparrows were reported missing during the period of 2005 - 2012 as compared to that before 2005. While a flock of around 30 birds were spotted fre-

quently, clusters of 30 + birds saw a 60% decline after 2005. While nests could be often seen before 2005, this again fell by about 65% in the last decade. Sighting a few reasons, Mr. Sunish Subramanian, Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) says, “A lot of changes have taken place in our cities in the last few years and this has affected the lives of birds. Urbanization has lead to reduction in the number of trees and old grocery stores have been replaced by swanky malls which leave no room for these sparrows to build nests or nibble on grains and other food items that were earlier accessible in small retail shops”.

distribution of more than 50,000 bird feeders in the city. Mr. Dilawar has also addressed the Architects’ Association to incorporate some environment friendly features in building designs that would leave some scope for the birds to build their nests. America’s TIME magazine has honored him as the “Hero of the Environment” in 2008 and he is being listed among 30 most influential environmentalists in the world. Another such initiative is called the “Sparrow Shelter” which is being undertaken by Mr. Pramod Mane to save the birds. The Nature Forever Society throws light on such unsung heroes by felicitating them with awards for their contribution in this noble cause. A city is a human settlement and it should not lose out on nature’s treasures but efforts should be taken to preserve and maintain them for the next generations. The Constitution of India has rightly included the mandatory function of “Urban forestry, protection of environment and promotion of ecological aspects” for the municipalities, In this disappointing scenario in the 12th Schedule. tanding Committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse on November 28, had ordered a probe into the huge unaccounted amount in the ‘suspense’ account ', for which a special meeting is scheduled with the accounting and the auditing department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the presence of the Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajeev Jalota with the detailed report of the unaccounted suspense account from the year 2007-2012. After the recent Rs.100-crore CWC scam, the MNS group leader in the BMC had brought to the notice of the Standing Committee chairman a much bigger scam regarding the BMC's suspense account which allegedly holds Rs.11,000 crore which cannot be accounted for. It has been noted that after the civic body

handed over their data processing to the Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP) in 2007, goof ups in the accounting department started rising as their data was not processed into the system which led to mistakes in the final accounting balance sheet these five years of which the BMC has no data at all. Sandeep Deshpande, group leader of the MNS,who was supported by all the political parties said, “According to the MCGM Act 1888, under section 135 states that the Municipal Chief Auditor conducts a monthly examination and audit of the Municipal Accounts and reports thereon to the Standing Committee. And we have not received any detailed report from his end.” Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas replied saying, “Before SAP got introduced, all the transactions were done manually.

My question to the corporation is, if the entries are incorrect, then how did the balance sheets tally all these years?”“The BMC's is a public account, and Rs 11,000 crore is not a small amount and I am not going to back down without finding details of the transactions done and entries noted for this sum. The closing balance of last year should be the same as when we open the new year's balance sheet, but there are discrepancies in those figures as well. As many as 25,000 reported rapes have taken place in the country so far this year. The picture shows girls participating in a procession in the city on the occasion of Human Rights Day yesterday.

Vintage ‘Volkswagen Kombi Type 2’ passes through India; 1st stop Mumbai Five years ago, Jens Jacob, a German-born entrepreneur, embarked on an ambitious journey to explore the world, with the view to understanding different cultures and traditions. What is truly remarkable about this journey is that Jens set out in his 1965 Volkswagen Kombi Van, nicknamed ‘Bluee’. Yes, an around-the-world trip in a vehicle that’s almost 50 years old! Of course, it helps that the van is equipped with a small kitchen, a water tank, spares, tools and some books. Jens started the journey alone, but now travels with his wife Cynthia, whom he met in Dubai.

The duo have travelled over 26 countries, over 60,000 km, including Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Dubai, Oman and Iran. They are now in India. The India leg of their journey began in Mumbai and will continue along coastal roads in the country, until the couple finally leaves for Nepal and Tibet, via West Bengal, and then on to Indonesia, via Vietnam. With extensive travel comes deep introspection, and Jens carries with him experiences and learnings to last a lifetime, that are captured brilliantly in his eBooks.

n a series of decisions taken after coming to power barely a month ago, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)–Shiv Sena alliance government of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has cancelled all political appointments to state-run Maulana Azad Minorities Economic Development Corporation (MAMEDC). It then appointed its undersecretary Sameer Salunkhe as the joint managing director. Besides this, the government has appointed a five-member committee headed by P A Inamdar to devise new schemes for minority development. In another related development, the government has also dissolved the district level Haj committees in 27 districts, in-

cluding Mumbai. The BJP-Sena-led governments move to dissolve all such political appointments and district-level minority bodies has once again raised eyebrows in the state political circles. It may be recalled that in 1995, when the BJP-Sena led alliance government had come to power, the then government of Chief Minister Manohar Joshi had scrapped the minorities welfare department raising criticism from the then opposition Congress. This time however, the state government has not scrapped the minorities welfare department altogether. In a first, by its Government Resolution (GR) dated December 4, the state government cancelled the appointments of chairman and directors of the 13 member

he water crisis in the city is getting worse day by day. Even though the catchment areas received good rainfall this year, citizens of Ghatkopar, Kurla, Andheri are still facing water issues like low pressure, not getting water at regular timings. The residents of Rajawadi in Ghatkopar west upto east except Pant Nagar have been surviving without water for the last four days. The reason for water not being supplied by the civic authority is not yet justified, Praveen Chhedha a corporator from Ghatkopar said, “There is a lot of water available with the BMC then what is the problem. The residents have lost their trust over the civic authority as when it comes to bill, it is always in

time. When the bill is issued, I request that it be sent to these residents on an average basis after deducting four days when there was no water.” An official from the hydrualic department of the BMC said, “We will make sure that the bill is sent after deducting the four days, normally, the water meter is off when there is no water supply:” A similar problem is being faced in H west ward wherein Asif Zakeria, a corporator said,”The residents are getting water at a very low pressure because of which many areas are not getting water on time.” Anuradha Pednekar, a corporator from L west ward said, “Residents have not received their water bills from the last six to seven months and later they get an excess bill which becomes difficult.”

he All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM – MIM) yesterday further expanded its party's footprint in Maharashtra by bagging the post of Deputy Mayor in the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC). MIM candidate Yunus Issa won the election to the post by a margin of just two votes. Shiv Sena, which earlier was supportive of MIM developed cold feet and instead abstained from the voting in the elections to the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in MMC. Mohammad Ibrahim Haji of Tisra Mahaj was elected as the Mayor. Besides Malegaon civic body, the MIM has 11 corporators in the Nanded Municipal Corporation (NMC). he standing committee yesterday gave the approval for the appointment of a consultant for the project in a major step towards setting up a bird park in Powai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed Ms Universal Organics as the project management consultant for preparing a master plan of the project. However, all the political parties have alleged that this is a move to shut the Byculla zoo, to which the corporation is claiming that the bird park will be an extension of the zoo and is also slated to de-congest the bird population in the zoo. The Byculla zoo currently includes exotic bird species like the Japanese Crane, Military Macaw and the African Parrot. The BMC had issued tenders inviting an expression of interest (EoI) to draw up a master plan for the proposed bird park at Babasaheb Ambed-

The entire Marathwada region and parts of Vidarbha is in the grip of drought, says the NCP leader

T

he NCP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar yesterday demanded that the new government should offer Rs 10,000 crore to tackle the drought-like situation in some parts of the state. During a debate on the situation, Pawar presented a gloomy picture of the drought-like situation in the state. He said, “The entire Marathwada region and part of Vidarbha was in the grip of drought and there was a need for providing immediate relief to farmers, especially soya and

paddy growers besides milk producers. The ruling combine is making a hue and cry about debts to tune of more than Rs 3 lakh crore whereas developed nations like United States are also under debt. The previous Democratic Front government has availed only 18 per cent of the debt limit while the remaining seven per cent can still be availed by the present government. There is a cap of 25 per cent debt on per capita income.” Pawar said that widows of farmers who have ended their lives due to debt and crop failure should be granted pension to overcome the NCP leader Ajit Pawar

closed that the Sena decided to abstain from the election to the post of deputy mayor as the party was in a minority. What is unique about the MIM victory is that all the nine corporators in the MMC earlier belonged to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). During the recent Assembly elections all the former nine NCP corporators joined the MIM. In the 80 member MMC, in the partywise break up, the Congress-led alliance had a strength of 32 corporators. The MIM-led alliance had a support of 46 corporators. The Congress-led alliance comprised of – Congress 24, JD-S 4 and Malegaon Vikas Aghadi 4. While the MIM-led alliance comprised of – MIM 9, MNS 2, Sena 11, JSS 1 and Independent 1. However, Sena at the last moment withdrew from the MIM-led alliance.

financial crisis since the sum of Rs 1 lakh provided by the government to the family of deceased farmers is completely inadequate. He said it is ironic that a mineral water bottle is available for Rs 20 in the market and milk is priced Rs 17 per litre. “Milk prices have fallen from Rs 27 to Rs 17,” Pawar pointed out. The debate on the drought-like situation was initiated today after opposition members relented and the ruling combine agreed to discuss the issue threadbare. Both the houses of the legislature had experienced huge uproar over the issue on Tuesday.

24-year-old Irish national was declared dead before admission into the civic-run Cooper Hospital after an employee of a five-star hotel in which the deceased had been staying rushed him to the hospital. The deceased has been identified as Devenney Brendan and his body is currently at the Cooper Hospital morgue. On Tuesday night,

the deceased was brought to the hospital but was declared brought dead. No one knows what exactly happened with him since he was staying alone in the hotel room. A politician, Nicolas Almeida, who brought the incident to light, said, “I have given a written complaint to Dr Dhumal regarding a thorough probe into this death.” According to Senior Police Inspector from Sahar Police station Prashant Marde, “The

deceased Devenny had checked-in on Monday and on Tuesday he was expected to catch a flight for Goa, but before that he was declared dead. “We did not find any external injury on his body. While sources from Sahar Police station revealed that the hotel staff themselves took the deceased to the hospital without informing the police. The police later got a call from Cooper Hospital about the incident. Almeda further said, “This type of incident are giving wrong impression to foreign tourists. We demand through investigation into the case, because it seems to be a murder case.”

History-sheeter arrested Huge wire theft under for killing labourer security noses

Accused Altaf Khan thought the deceased, Sagar Kambale was a police informant By Zuber Ansari

T

he Powai police have arrested a history-sheeter for murdering a labourer he suspected of being a police informant. The deceased is believed to have been stabbed and beaten, his body was dumped in the forests of Aarey colony. According to the officials at Powai Police, the incident happened at around 2 am on Wednesday. The accused Altaf Khan (21) is a resident of MHADA colony at Milind Nagar in Powai. Arrested on three charges of theft that ranged from housebreaking to stealing bicycles, he got into an argument with the deceased, Sagar Kambale, a labourer by profession, who he believed was a police informant and tipping them off about his activities. Kambale was also a resident of the same area and was, at the time of the argument, accompanied by three to four of his friends. “The argument turned violent and Kambale hit Khan a couple of times. Khan called up some of his friends for help and they arrived on spot with a few weapons,”

said senior inspector Vilas Chavan of Aarey police station. His friends, on seeing the weapons, fled from the spot even as the group attacked Kambale. Finally, the group took Kambale to Moraji Nagar and pushed him down a slope into the forest. “Going by the blood marks that are found on the streets connecting Milind Nagar to Moraji Nagar, we believe that the accused and his friends chased and dragged the deceased to the spot,” said an official from Powai police station.Around 3 am, the Aarey police received a call from the local residents about a body lying in the forests. “We reached the spot and recovered the body. There were several stab marks on the body and the man was dead by the time we got there,” said Chavan. The Aarey police informed their counterparts at Powai who had already been approached by the deceased’s friends about their friend being taken away. One of the friends was familiar with the accused and knew his place of residence. Based on the information, the police arrested Khan from his house. “We have recovered a kitchen knife used for the murder. We are now hunting for Khan's other friends who had accompanied the accused,” added the official.

ll the Engineering Services of the civic body were paralysed on Wednesday as unidentified persons had stolen major electricity wire, that supplies electricity from the electricity substation to the headquarters of engineering services in Worli. The incident took place in close proximity to the civic security head office. Police officials notes that the heavy wire was worth Rs.8 lakh and are wondering whether it is job of some electrician or drug addicts. Director of Engineering Services ordered a report on the loss and damage due to the loss of electricity. Director Engineering Services officials said that except emergency lights, the entire electricity supply was cut off to the Engineering Hub that houses offices of all Chief Engineers of respective wings of the municipal corporation. According to the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Undertaking (BEST) unknown people broke the locks of the electricity sub station that supplies electricity to the Engineering Hub. Without any damage, they put off the electricity supply and cut wires from both ends. More interestingly, the

electricity substation is very close to the the head office of the civic security. Before anyone could sense what is going on, thieves put off the electricity supply of the sub section and cut off the the very thick wires from both ends and managed to run away. 07 CITY Gang rape of minor girl rocks Nalasopara By Suresh Golani

T

ension gripped the Ostwal Nagri area of Nalasopara (East) Tuesday following the gang rape of a minor girl allegedly by a group of local junkies. The 15-year-old girl who was returning to her tenement was abducted and taken to a nearby under-construction commercial unit where she was gagged and gang raped by a group of local junkies at about 11 pm on Tuesday. In her statement to the police, the girl has claimed that she has seen the accused men frequenting the area and hanging around in the bylanes of their chawl, however she could not identify them by their names. As news of rape spread in the area, irate people took to the streets and also gheraoed the Tulinj police chowky. Raising slogans against Nalasopara police for their failure in maintaining law and order of the region, the locals demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and intensified patrolling to flush out anti-social elements, mainly drug addicts who have been moving around and committing crimes with impunity. The Palghar district police is already under fire for their

gross insensitivity in handling cases related to crime against women. Meanwhile, the PRO was quick to issue a press release stating that immediately after receiving the complaint, a case under section 376 (d) of the IPC and under sections 4,8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 had been registered against two unidentified accused and Police Inspector Kalantre was carrying out further investigations into the case. The gang-rape of the minor has raised questions over the security of women in the Vasai-Virar region which falls under the recently carved Palghar district police. Meanwhile three persons have been detained for their suspected involvement in the crime, a relative is also said to be under the scanner of investigations.

Elderly couple murdered in farmhouse By Suresh Golani

I

n yet another brutal episode apparently executed by professional robbers, an old-aged couple was brutally murdered by unidentified assailants at their farmhouse in Kotim village near Dahanu. According to the Vangaon police, the deceased who have been identified as Nausir Irani (76) and

his wife Nargis (74), were found in a pool of blood with severe head and other injuries on Wednesday morning. Even as robbery seems to be the motive behind the gruesome murder, an investigating team led by SDPO Vijaykant Sagar is probing all suspected angles which may have led to the crime. A case under sections 302 and 460 of the IPC has been registered against unidentified accused.

report of the special drive which was started by the Central Railway in Mumbai in January this year to nab hawkers, trespassers, people travelling unlawfully in reserved compartments or compartments reserved for women, reveals that 58,005 cases were registered, Rs 1,54,16,665 was collected as fine and 529 people were detained between January and October 2014. Rs 53,61,620 was collected as fine under 144(a) of the railway section act which deals with prohibition on hawking and begging. Rs 46,42,290 was collected as fine under 155(a) of the railway section act which deals with entering into a reserved compartment or resisting entry into a compartment not reserved. Rs 9,88,850

was collected by the Central Railway and 22 people were detained under the 162(a) Railway act that deals with entering the carriage or other places reserved for women. Central Railway officials note that the number of cases had increased from last year and that is the reason that the drive was launched and is getting a positive response. People are slowly starting to think twice before committing any sort offence knowing well that a huge penalty will be charged. Speaking to the ADC, A.K. Singh, Senior Public Relation Officer, Central Railway, said, “We had launched a special drive in order to curb the railway offences and the results are positive. The Central Railways will continue with such drives and try our best to bring control

‘BMC must have own budget to tackle malnutrition issue’ Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014

SP leader Rais Shaikh says, the civic body should not depend on State govt. for this purpose

By A Staff Reporter

T

he idea of the BMC having its own budget for dealing with the issue of malnutrition in the city was tossed in the BMC by Rais Shaikh who heads the Samajwadi Party in the civic body, on Wednesday. According to Shaikh, the body that governs the city should have its own budget to deal with the issue of malnutrition instead of waiting for the State to do the needful. “Malnutrition is a matter of concern in the city and the BMC doesn't have a budget of its own to deal with this issue. So, it is for the good that the BMC should allocate a nutrition budget to tackle this issue rather than depending solely

on the State government that runs the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The ICDS should now be

handed over to the BMC. The BMC should be able to run and supervise such programs,” said Shaikh.

The amount for the nutrition budget that Shaikh has proposed is Rs 25 lakh. “The amount I am asking for is not very big. It is only Rs 25 lakh annually and the BMC can manage this,” said Shaikh. “I will get this budget allocation in place within two months. I will do whatever it takes to make this happen,” he added. “This is a state subject. The Government has a department and the manpower to take care of this issue and also, there has been no transfer as yet of the subject to any local body. Now whether to transfer or not is the Government’s decision,” said BMC additional municipal commissioner, Sanjay Deshmukh.

NGO urges govt to check talk of reconversion by RSS men Christians all over the country and NRIs have been called upon to observe a Black Christmas By A Staff Reporter

T

he Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), activist community NGO has taken strong exception to the reported utterances of certain RSS functionaries to reconvert 5,000 minority families on Christmas day and calls upon the government to investigate the matter and prevent communal disharmony, which has far-reaching effects. “The Hindu fundamentalists seem emboldened with the new government, which is giving India and the BJP a bad image in India and abroad. We therefore appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to caution the RSS and restrain it from stirring up communal frenzy. We have no issue with any one changing religion, but not under duress or through inducement, as has been proved. Further, the Union Minister

for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot said that the government was not in favour of granting schedule caste status to Dalit Christian and Muslims, which is why these re-conversions are taking place. Those who re-converted are from the lower castes are extremely poor, and government needs to focus on this strata of Indian society, rather than use them as fodder for social engineering,” said Joseph Dias, CSF general secretary. According to Dias, within months of the NDA taking over, incidents of 'ghar wapsi' have increased, especially in UP and Christians even in the national capital are unsafe, with a church burnt, another stoned and yet another attacked. “The RSS itself has put out figures of 2.73 lakh minorities being reconverted in the Braj area of UP alone. Reports reaching the CSF

point out that thousands of families, especially in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura, Firozabad, Etah, Meerut, Mainpuri and Uttarakhand are unable to freely practice their faith. We have called upon the community all over the country and NRIs to observe a Black Christmas, with prayers that Indian Christians may truly have freedom of religion. The danger is that such unchecked and encouraged communal activities by non-state actors pose an imminent danger to the development agenda which got the BJP government elected. If the government and secularists remain silent to give impetus to the Hindutva forces, then the day will not be far, when India will be reduced to another Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan,” Dias said. He also cautioned that many of the minorities who had voted for the BJP, which

otherwise would not have been able to win the elections, will be compelled to turn away from the party. “Christians being a peace loving community have their religious sentiments hurt with such statements coming from prominent BJP politicos. The timing and frequency of such provocations makes it suspect that the government is only for Hindus, of Hindus and by Hindus, with not even lip service being paid to minorities. Such governance is bound to draw the ire of the developed nations, who presently have a good opinion of the establishment, but are also committed to human and minority rights. It is well documented fact that Indian Christians, individually and as a community have contributed immensely towards the progress of the nation and should not be treated as second-class citizens,” Dias said.

Auto union demand state action against illegal vehicles Says, drivers of illegal autorickshaws fleece passengers and also behave rudely with them By A Staff Reporter

T

he Mumbai Auto Rickshawmen's Union has sent a letter to the state government requesting it to take action against the illegal auto rickshaws which are plying in the city. The union has listed the places where illegal auto rickshaw drivers ply and charge hefty amounts from the passengers. The places

include Vikhroli, Andheri (West), Malad, Sion, Godrej Compound in Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Goregaon, Airoli Signal and Chembur. The Union has also demanded that the vehicles that are plying with tourist vehicle permits do not have proper identification and are not verified. Police Clearance Certificates (PCC) have not been issued to these tourist

cab drivers and that makes it more unsafe to travel in them. Shashank Rao, President, Mumbai Auto Rickshawmen's Union said, “Due to the illegal auto rickshaws, there is a huge queue outside the CNG pumps and the number is increasing. The illegal rickshaw drivers also charge any amount from the passengers and do not treat

the passengers with respect. Nabbing such drivers is difficult as there is no proper record. We have asked the state along with the Transport dept and the RTOs to take action against the illegal auto drivers, and have suggested that prepaid booths should be installed outside airports and major railway stations so that illegal plying of auto rickshaws stops.”

Sena MLA seeks govt lifeline for civic hospital By Suresh Golani

I

n a move aimed at offering the much needed quality medical facilities to the people of Mira Bhayandar, Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik has reiterated his demands of converting the yet-to-be started Tembha Civic Hospital into a sub-district hospital. An official meeting has been scheduled on Thursday with Public Health and Family Welfare minister Dr Deepak Sawant. Even though the fourstorey hospital building which can accommodate 200 beds has been completed for the past couple of years, the MBMC has been expressing financial incapacity to sustain the huge administrative expenses to run the medical institution. However clear directives from the judiciary in response to a PIL filed by former Janta Dal corporator Milan Mhatre, puts the onus of initiating and operating the civic hospital on the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). The MBMC now claims to have chalked out an elaborate plan to start a 50-bed limited facility in March 2015, before commissioning of the full-fledged hospital in a phased manner. “Upgrad-

ing the status of the civic hospital into a sub-district would not only enhance the quality of medical services but would also ease the financial burden of the MBMC,” Sarnaik said. The then civic chief Vikram Kumar had also sought JNNURM funds for the hospital. Unfortunately nothing came off it. Presently the entity has set up an Out Patient Department, gynaecology and pathology services. While there is not a single fullfledged government hospital in the Mira Road – Dahanu belt, serious cases are referred to municipal hospitals located in the Western suburbs of Mumbai.

Criminal driver in private cab service T

HE authorities seem to wake up only after tragedy strikes. Without bothering to check up, they usually come to the conclusion all is well. They never thought that private companies running taxis should be checked. For instance, the companies showed first investigate the background of drivers before employing them. Evidently they don't do this. The Uber cab service in Delhi evidently has not made inquiries about the driver who raped a girl. She had hired the taxi and she must not have thought for a moment that the driver was a criminal. She took for granted all was well and she even dozed off as the taxi sped to her destination. The taxi driver – a serial rapist – stopped and raped her. This criminal had raped other women before only a couple of years ago, he had committed the crime. He got a forged character certificate and got his job. Police inquiry is going on and it will not be a surprise if he had raped several girls before and got away with it. What is important to note he was under the police scanner before. The police too take for granted that the cab service has honest drivers. What is necessary is a thorough check. The private cab service is guilty and so is the police who also should have checked more into the entire working of the cab service. In Mumbai also, there are private cab services. People blindly believe they are safe and get hit by criminals. After the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi two years ago, the expected action was not taken. The latest frightening incident also will not attract any serious response by the authorities.

ISTORICALLY, Mumbai has always remained in the eye of storm, whether on political, social or economical issues or terror threats and attacks. Truly the Urbs Prima and the financial capital of India, Mumbai waged many wars and battles. The wars were, of course, not for the welfare the metropolis but to establish supremacy over the city. Whether wars between the British and Portuguese and French, between Peshwa’s forces and pirates of the Arabian seas, Gujaratis and Maharashtrians, Muslims and Hindus, Maharashtrians and South Indians or between political parties, battles, wars or riots were engineered for supremacy in the mega city. Till the creation of Maharashtra state in 1960, Mumbai was under the deep and decisive influence of left party activists. Communist leader S.S. Dange or Socialist George Fernandes had kept the city under their fullest control. This leadership was snatched by Shiv Sena, that not only won the labour unions but also Mumbai Municipal Corporation that runs the civic administration of the city.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014

honest intentions, the pace of improvement of Mumbai is far lower than expectations. The question then arises is, how to address this problem? Many efforts were undertaken in the past at the state government-level. Sharad Pawar, when he was the Chief Minister had floated the idea of having an independent ministry in his cabinet to take care of Mumbai. Former top bureaucrat, Ram Pradhan, was elected to the Legislative Council to head the ministry. However, the scheme did not materialize as there was hue and cry over the design to look after Mumbai independently. The efforts were seen as an attempt to cut Mumbai off Maharashtra. It was the same cause for which the four-and-halfyear-long historical agitation of ‘Samyukta Maharashtra’ movement that was fought. The

Political power While the city's political power remained with Shiv Sena, the financial power was always in the hands of big business houses, like the Tatas, Birlas, Godrej, etc. However, as years passed, new Nawabs emerged on the industrial and financial scene. New sultans were the Ambanis and Wadias. On the other hand, a parallel power of underworld also emerged. Goondas-turned-social workers-turnedpoliticians emerged. Earlier Varadarajan Mudaliyar, then Mirza Ali Khan Haji Mastan, Yusuf Patel, followed by Arun Gawli, Amar Naik and finally Dawood Ibrahim came on the scene and the media described them ‘uncrowned kings of the city’. They had ‘no mercy’ muscle men on their rolls, who worked with honesty. Many political leaders fell to their prey as they did not fall in line. Prem Shukla, Datta Samant were the big leaders who fell to gangsters' bullets, while noted industrialist Sumit Khatau was also killed on the middle of the road in a broad daylight. At one time considered to be a ‘don’, Arun Gawli contested Assembly elections and was elected. His close relatives also won civic and state elections. In short, now Mumbai’s fate had gone in the hands of the underworld. Days passed, during which Mumbai was rapidly growing. The little island city and its suburbs became home for over 10 million people, who came from all over the country and are of different castes, creed, religions and languages. Mumbai accommodated all and this was proudly described as ‘miniIndia’. But each praise also comes with its price. As the metropolis was growing by leaps and bounds, its problems also increased in the same proportion. The civic administration, state government and the Union government worked hard to improve infrastructure facilities and also to create a a few new ones. As railway lines, stations, telephone connections, roads, flyovers, public transport system was considerably improved, new facilities, such as mono-rail, metro rail, sea-links, freeways were introduced. Mobile phones improved the communication system. However, all such efforts fell short to meet the basic needs of ever-growing population. To add to the fury was the red-tape in the government affairs and lack of coordination between government departments at various levels. The end result was that despite

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut repercussions of the moment are still felt time and again. The issue came up for wide and angry public debate recently after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded a demand in Delhi to form a high power committee headed by the Prime Minister to look in to the problem and issues of development of Mumbai, particularly the issues which involve state and the Centre. Fadnavis’s argument and intention seems to be that many schemes of public interest remain in cold storage due to lack of coordination and absence of proper decision-making mechanism. If the decisionmaking is prolonged, the cost of projects escalates and finally the projects become non-viable. There are many projects, which turned out to be white elephants only because their execution took criminally longer time due to bureaucratic lethargy and red-tapism.

The costs of Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Worli-Bandra Sealink, Mumbai Metro Project, Eastern Freeway scaled three-times more due to enormous delay in completion of the projects. Had there been a unified agency to coordinate intra-government issues, the state exchequer would have burdened less and taxpayers' money could have been saved.

High-level committee The most ambitious Jaitapur Atomic Power Project in Konkan still remains in cold storage as the state government or the Atomic Energy Commission or National Atomic Power Corporation could not resolve the political issues or meet people’s demands and aspirations. However, one sincerely hopes that if a highlevel committee under the leadership of the Prime Minister is empowered to look in to the issues of coordination and clearance of various projects, the matters would be easier than now. If that is the intention, there should not be any opposition to the formation of such a mechanism. However, a doubt is raised that such a committee is a step towards separating Mumbai from Maharashtra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his election campaign, had made it amply clear more than once, that he had no intention of breaking Mumbai from Maharashtra. Should we bank on his words during election campaign? Another question raised is, why this committee only for Mumbai when many other big metros like Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad are also facing development problems? Is the state government and its Urban Development Ministry not capable of handling the coordination task? Is Chief Minister of the state less important to seek immediate intervention of Union ministers on a project-to-project basis? What will be the role of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, that is an elected self-government body and Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, that comes directly under the state government and the Ministry for Urban Development is obliged to answer any question about the working of the authority? Fadnavis or Modi need to answer these queries immediately before they take the shape of protest and agitation. Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut

Osho’s enlightened quotes

Mind functions in 'either/or' way: either

this or its opposite can be right. Both together cannot be right — as far as mind, its logic, its rationality is concerned. If mind is 'either/or' then the heart is 'both/and.' The heart has no logic, but a sensitivity, a perceptivity. It can see that they both can not only be together,

MATTER & SPIRIT in fact they are not two. It is just one phenomenon seen from two different aspects. If the whole existence is one, and if the existence goes on taking care of trees, of animals, of mountains, of oceans — from the smallest blade of grass to the biggest star — then it will take care of you too. Why be possessive? The possessiveness shows simply one thing — that you cannot trust existence. You have to arrange separate security for

yourself, safety for yourself; you cannot trust existence. Non-possessiveness is basically trust in existence. There is no need to possess, because the whole is already ours. Drop guilt! — because to be guilty is to live in hell. Not being guilty, you will have the freshness of dewdrops in the early morning sun, you will have the freshness of lotus petals in the lake, you will have the freshness of the stars in the night. Once guilt disappears you will have a totally different kind of life, luminous and radiant. You will have a dance to your feet and your heart will be singing a thousand and one songs. If the mind wants to comprehend reality, it will have to come out of the past and the future. But coming out of the past and the future, it is no longer the mind at all. Hence the insistence of all the great masters of the world that the door to reality is no-mind.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014

DELHI has become a rape city. Is it possible to stop rapes or for that matter any other crimes by harassing the owners of the organisation who provide services? No. But our police and other investigative agencies are so lethargic and corrupt that no culprit is punished. Our courts and lawyers cannot disown their share in the mess. It may be recalled that Jayalalithaa did not attend the court for more than 18 years and the court was lenient after which the Supreme Court had to set the time limit and the case was concluded. BJP president Amit Shah has been refusing to attend court case for the last so many years and the court is not bothered about it. A lot of hue and cry was also created in the Nirbhaya case but the case is not still over. Despite having scientific evidences, our courts, especially lower courts, take their own time and follow traditional methods to decide the cases. As a result, even the witnesses do not come forward for fear of police and court harassment. In the recent case, Uber might have had provided the service of the driver but how can they be held responsible? If every one has to get police verification, then the verification will be routine and casual. Policing every one is not possible. Therefore, the punishment should be severe and an exemplary one. — Maneshwar Nayak, via email

TIME and again we across rapes in the capital city and there is no end solution to the problem faced by women in the Metro. Both drivers and security guards are appointed without doing background checks thereby running the risk of miscreants taking up key jobs and creating trouble for women in a cabbie or in a housing society. The US-based service providers made a mess of their identification and the fake certificate helped out the cause. Now after the rape, Mumbai cops have ordered a check on all private cabbies. In the Uber case, banning is not the ultimate solution, the police should also contemplate legal action against the American firm without any consideration. We cannot come across such crimes against women and if we keep quiet now, then this will become a prece-

Banning not the solution rapists do not fear law or police. It would be worthwhile in this case to take cue from Kolhapur police. It had good result when policewomen and police-men moved about in plain clothes in likely places and attack and thrash would-be molestors and road-side romeos. It created fear of the law. Social media, movies, soap opera and electronic and print media can play a major role in enlightening people that rape is a great crime. THE decision to ban Uber cab services in Delhi in the wake of the alleged rape of a 27-year-old woman in a taxi plying under it is not be a solution. New developments are taking place in transport systems through electronics. Banning the railways for train accidents, buses for bus accidents and taxis is not correct. The decision came a day after Delhi government banned all operations by private cab service Uber with immediate effect and blacklisted it from providing any transport service in the national capital following the alleged rape committed by a driver registered with it. “It is up to the state government to decide because the subject is in Concurrent List. State governments have equal right to take a decision about it. The new systems with modern concepts must be encouraged and

AS reported, it is indeed very shocking and disturbing to know about the alarming rise in sex crimes in Delhi. This is the oldest crime in the history of mankind. Publicity of punishment, hanging, new rules have not mitigated sex crimes or rape. People are angry and justified when they ask for death penalty or severe punishment on such depraved culprits, but death or severe punishment cannot be a deterrent and not a solution for rapists or would-be rapists as it does not send out a clear message or warning. Even if the culprit is given death penalty, the chapter is closed and gives relief and satisfaction to general public but it will not have any affect or deter would-be culprits. IT is a matter of grave concern and shame that rape incidents have reportedly become a regular feature in our country, clearly questioning the policing skills of our country. The PM in his rallies prior to the Lok Sabha elections boasted that a lady could travel all alone even at 2 am in Ahmedabad which was confirmed by many residents of that city. There are tangible proofs that the rest of our country is not the same as the crimes have ramified in one form or another and seems to be an everyday affair thus making a mockery of the entire domestic system. There is no gainsaying the stark fact that there is imperative need on the part of the governments, both at the Centre and the states/UTs to enforce and ensure a very high degree of disciplinary measures so as to induce fear in such of those habitual offenders that the government would get down heavily and very harshly on them by not hesitating to subject them to severe punishment in a quick period of time without any mercy. The gravity of the punishment should be widely published and propagated in such a manner making the best use of the latest technology duly backed by a close and effective network of strict vigil. THE rape of a 27-year-old finance professional in Delhi by a cab driver comes as a shock and the capital city of our country notorious for rape cases has once again created a fear among the fair sex not just in Delhi but the entire country. However, banning the cab service provider was a knee-jerk reaction which is not going to tackle rape as a crime in Delhi or the country in general. Rapes and molestations are the work of perverts, the frustrated and the deprived. It could well be committed by anyone for that matter. Prevention is better than cure and all safeguards should be in place to prevent this heinous crime. Past records of people employed should be properly scrutinised and details must be submitted at the nearest police station or special cells. Utilise the technology like cameras etc to monitor sensitive areas through the help of satellites. Females too should should dress and behave decently in public places so that people they come in contact do not lose their balance of mind to commit such crimes. Also, legalizing prostitution in the country is the need of the hour so that the deprived can fulfill his lust in a legitimate and safe manner without having to commit such crimes. — S N Kabra, Goregaon

Champions of peace: India’s Kailash Satyarthi, Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai receive Nobel Peace Prize

SLO: Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai -- an IndoPak, Hindu-Muslim 'champions of peace' – on Wednesday received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 for their pioneering work on promoting child rights in the troubled sub-continent, as they made an impassioned plea to globalise compassion. "Satyarthi and Yousafzai are precisely the people whom Alfred Nobel in his will calls 'champions of peace'," Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Thorbjorn Jagland said in his speech before awarding them the prestigious prize here. "A young girl and a somewhat older man, one from Pakistan and one from India, one Muslim, the other Hindu; both symbols of what the world needs: more unity. Fraternity between the nations!," he added. Satyarthi, who gave up his job as an electrical engineer to run an NGO for rescuing children from forced labour and trafficking, said: "I refuse to accept that the world is so poor, when just one week of global military expenditure is enough to bring all of our children into classrooms." "I refuse to accept that the shackles of slavery can ever be... Stronger than the quest for freedom," said 60-year-old Satyarthi, who asked the audience to feel the child inside them and globalise compassion. The audience included King Harald V of Norway and Pakistan's former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, reports PTI. "Let us inculcate and transform the individuals' compassion into a global movement. Let us globalise compassion. Not passive compas-

cause they are all our children," he said, adding that the crime against children has no place in a civilised society. Satyarthi's NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save Childhood Movement) prides itself on liberating over 80,000 children from bonded labour in factories and workshops across India. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) there are about 168 million child labourers globally. There are roughly 60 million child labourers in India alone. Satyarthi and 17-year-old Malala, who survived a near-fatal Taliban attack two years ago with determination advocating education for girls, were named by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for the prestigious award on October 10. They received the Nobel medal which is 18 carat green gold plated with 24 carat gold and weighs around 175 grams. They will share US $1.1 million prize money. Malala, who was nominated in the peace prize category last year also, became the youngest ever Nobel laureate. In her speech, she said, "I am honoured to receive this award together with Kailash Satyarthi, who

has been a champion of children's rights for a long time. Twice as long, in fact, than I have been alive. I am also glad that we can stand together and show the world that an Indian and a Pakistani can be united in peace and together work for children's rights." "This award is not just for me. It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change," she said in her acceptance speech. "I am here to stand up for their rights, raise their voice...It is not time to pity them. It is time to take action so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of education," she said. Recalling her speech at the UN, she said "One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world." She dedicated the Nobel Prize money to the Malala Fund, to help give girls everywhere a quality education. "The first place this funding will go is where my heart is, to build schools in Pakistan—especially in my home of Swat and Shangla," she said. She said Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and

and Malala Yousafzai who received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 in Oslo. "The entire nation watches the ceremony in Oslo with great joy and immense pride. Congratulations @k_satyarthi! "I also congratulate the young Malala Yousafzai for the momentous achievement," Modi tweeted soon after the awards were conferred. Satyarthi, an activist working against child labour, was awarded the Nobel prize while the Pakistani teen bagged the award for her activism to promote female education.

Aung San Suu Kyi once stood on the same stage and hoped the steps that Satyarti and she has taken so far will also bring change – lasting change. "It is not time to tell the leaders to realise how important education is they already know it - their own children are in good schools. Now it is time to call them to take action. We ask the world leaders to unite and make education their top priority," she added. Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Jagland said that violence and repression cannot be justified in any religion. "Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism protect life and cannot be used to take lives," he said. Echoing his views, Satyarthi said, "All the great religions tell us to care for children. Jesus said: 'Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to them.' The Holy Quran says: 'Kill not your children because of poverty.' "I refuse to accept that all the temples and mosques and churches and prayer houses have no place for the dreams of our children," he said. "I challenge the passivity and pessimism surrounding our children. I challenge this culture of silence, this culture of neutrality," he said and called upon all the governments, intergovernmental agencies, businesses, faith leaders, the civil society, and everyone to put an end to all forms of violence against children. "Today, I see thousands of Mahatma Gandhis, Martin Luther Kings, and Nelson Mandelas marching forward and calling on us. The boys and girls have joined. I have joined in. We ask you to join too," he added.

India pitches for finance & technology for developing nations L

IMA: India on Wednesday strongly pitched for finance and technology for developing nations from developed countries to deal with challenges posed by climate change, amidst intense negotiations here to agree on a new ambitious and binding deal to cut global carbon emissions. Speaking at the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance here, Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar also suggested ways to enhance global climate finance, a key demand of the developing countries.

Investors from developed countries stand to gain by utilising these commercial opportunities, he said, referring to India's recently announced plans to scale up actions for clean air, water, rivers, energy and habitations, reports PTI. "This will be beyond the resources from the US $100 billion in global public climate finance by 2020 that I have talked about as a minimum for global efforts," he said. "My argument is that developed countries need to think much more innovatively to collectively tap their financial markets, their long-term

pension funds and bond markets, reducing costs and risks, and bring this financing and join our national efforts, as in other developing countries. "This cannot be a substitute for predictable public climate finances of a sufficient size, but is a complementary way," he said. Noting that finance is a key enabler of ambition and action, he said, "If there is no clear roadmap in the provision of public resources by developed countries to provide new and additional financial resources approaching $100 billion annually by 2020 and rising thereafter, then

outcomes will be sub-optimal for a safer world." The minister said the need for finance and technology support as a key element under the "Intended Nationally Determined Contributions" (INDCs) cannot be overstated. The range of actions is not limited to mitigation alone, but also to all other areas, including adaptation, he said. Noting that the Green Climate Fund (GCF) cannot do everything given its limited size, he said, "That is why the need of quickly moving to the goal of $100 billion annually

Prakash Javadekar by 2020 is so crucial for everything we are discussing at Lima and in the run-up to 2015" Paris summit.

There’s only a few weeks left for Christmas, which means that you’ve probably started to dust your Christmas tree and shake out the tinsel to decorate it. If your decorations need a slight overhaul, but you don’t want to spend too much on new ones, take a cue from The Woman’s World Team and make your own!

hristmas is a great time to indulge in a few homemade treats — no we’re not talking about cooking up a storm with the family. It’s time to start putting up your tree and taking stock of your decorations! If you don’t have too many impressive decorations this year, don’t panic. We’re going to show you how to use household items along with a few arts and crafts supplies to make some of the cutest decorations you’ll ever see. The best part is that they’re so easy to make, that you can ask your children to be your little helpers — making it a fun activity for the entire family!

COOKIE CUTTER DECORATIONS

Materials: Christmas-themed cookie cutters, Christmas-themed wrapping paper, fabric glue, twine and scissors. Method: This is one of the easiest decorations to make and it took us only a few hours to finish because of the drying time. Your children can make this one on their own too. All you have to do is lay cookie cutters on wrapping

paper so that the desired pattern peeks through. Trace the outline, apply a thick coat of glue on the cutter and stick it to the sheet of paper to form a background. Press it down, then let it dry for 2-3 hours. Cut off any paper and pass some twine through it to hang it on your tree.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier >> Snow globes take long to make, but they look extremely pretty

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014

clear plastic bottles for your children and place them face down on a newspaper. Hand them colourful glitter glue and help them make snowflake designs on top of them. Make a tiny hole with a pin and insert a thread through it to hang these on your Christmas tree.

>> All you need to make these glittery Christmas balls are a handful of sequins and pins!

CHRISTMAS BALLS

SNOW GLOBES

Materials: Christmas trees, snowmen and other small decorations, M-Seal, silver glitter, distilled water, glycerine and a clean mason or jam jar. Method: While this one is easy to make if you’ve got leftover decorations and old jars at home, it does take slightly longer than the rest. It’s simple enough, but if you’re making it with children, you need to supervise the procedure. Unscrew the lid of the mason jar and stick the Christmas decorations in the centre of the lid. We used M-Seal to stick ours, but if you are using wooden decorations, fabric glue will work too. The glue/ M-Seal will take a few hours to harden, so set it aside overnight to allow it to dry well. Then, fill the actual jar with water and glycerine in a 3:1 ratio and add 1 tsp loose glitter to it. Mix it with a spoon to disperse the glitter, screw on the lid and turn the jar upside down to create your own snow globe.

Materials: Thermocol balls, sequins, pins and twine. Method: If your children love arts and crafts, we’re sure that you’ve got some leftover sequins at home. While thermocol balls are available at craft shops, you can also use old, faded Christmas ornaments instead of throwing them away. These look impressive, are ridiculously simple to make, but are quite time consuming. Making one ornament took us a good half hour, so make sure that you have ample time on your hands. All you have to do is pin individual sequins onto the ball in a pattern, or fill it up like we did. Twist a piece of stiff wire over one of the pins to hang the ball from your tree. Remember not to try and use glue or the thermocol will melt.

BOTTLE BASE SNOWFLAKES

Materials: Small plastic bottles, glitter glue, twine and a knife or cutter. Method: This one is the easiest, but will still sit pretty on your Christmas tree. Cut the base of

>> These bottle cap snowmen are a great way to upcycle waste

BUTTON RING DéCOR Materials: Old buttons, twine and a ribbon. Method: This is not only one of the easiest on the list, it’s also one of the most pocket friendly options. All you need to do is string the buttons on a piece of jewellery wire or twine and then tie the top together with a piece of ribbon!

BOTTLE SNOWMAN

Materials: A plastic bottle, acrylic paints in black, white and red, a matchstick and a string of fairy lights. Method: If your children have an artistic flair, this is the best project to do with them. You can make several to put around your house, or just one to place under your tree. Using acrylic paint, paint the base of the bottle (¼th) white. Paint a snowman on the front, with a red scarf around his neck. Use a matchstick dipped in black paint to create buttons, eyes and a smile. Finally, make the snowman’s hat and use the matchstick to add his nose and the red band around the hat. Carefully place fairy lights inside and your snowman is ready!

and push a twig into each ball to make the arms. Then, paint the eyes, nose and buttons with acrylic paint. Let the paint dry and your snowmen are ready! Wrap jewellery wire tightly around the cap of the bulb to hang them on the tree. They can shatter if they fall, so be careful where you place them!

GLITTER STARS

Materials: Metallic paper in any colour, twine, glue, scissors and loose glitter. Method: These are perfect for young children who can’t handle a complicated craft project. Help them cut out star shapes from shiny paper and draw a smaller star in the middle. Fill the shape with glue and then dust some glitter into the centre. Poke twine through a hole at the top to hang them up. If you want them to sit stiffer, paste them on cardboard.

STENCIL PLATE

LIGHT BULB SNOWMEN

Materials: Frosted light bulbs, acrylic paint, glitter glue, twigs, M-Seal and jewellery wire. Method: These are easy to make, but if your children are planning to help, you will have to supervise every step in order to avoid a crushed light bulb disaster! These are a great way to use blown light bulbs that you might have lying around the house, but remember to use frosted ones to ensure that these cute decorations look like actual snowmen. While they are very easy to make, you’ll have to start working on them a day in advance so that there is enough time for the glitter glue to dry. First, clean the bulbs and use a paint brush to thinly coat them with glitter glue. You will usually have to wait for 4-5 hours for one side to dry, before moving on to coating the other side. However, this hack will make it easier — cut an x-shaped slit in the base of the bulb boxes and push the bulbs in so that they stand upright — this way you can coat the entire bulb with glitter glue and let it dry overnight. The next morning, stick two tiny balls of M-Seal on opposite sides of the bulb

snowman and cut the excess ribbon off the bottom. You can make a loop with the ribbon at the top, but ours was too thick so we simply used the glue to stick a thinner ribbon on top. Paint eyes, a nose and a smile on the topmost cap and then add buttons to the second one. Sprinkle a little glitter in each cap and hang them on your tree!

BOTTLE CAP SNOWMEN

Materials: Bottle caps (three per snowman), thick ribbon, all-surface glue, glitter or glitter glue, acrylic paint in white, black and orange and thin ribbon. Method: These are one of our favourites. They require a little more time and effort to make, so ensure that you’re around your children to supervise them. Paint all the bottle caps white (you can just paint the insides if you’re short on time. Remember you will need at least 4 coats to cover them well) and stick them lengthwise onto a strip of ribbon — three caps to a

Materials: A paper plate, acrylic paint, handmade paper, a strip of ribbon, glitter, sequins and all-surface glue. Method: This is a great craft for children to do on leftover party plates. Give them free hand with a brush and paint and let them explore their creative side. Allow them to dust glitter over it, stick on sequins — whatever they wish! Stick the plate onto coloured paper. You can add some ribbon at the back, like we did, for a little more embellishment. Put it up in their room or let them hang it in a corner of the house for a homemade Christmassy feel.

Delicious scents, inseparable friends and a passion for body products. A recipe for success brought Karishma Gupta & Shefali Shah together, to start Bliscent — a beauty brand. Rhea Dhanbhoora spoke to them to find out more

I

first stumbled upon Bliscent whilst on a shopping spree, when I just couldn’t resist picking up some of their delicious smelling handmade products at The Lil Flea this year. A little digging later, I found that the brand’s owners were as interesting as the new brand itself. With the company still in its nascent stages, they’ve managed to rustle up an impressive fan following. Take a look at what they have to say about their brand and their journey...

n What made you decide to work together?

We first met as teenagers while we were studying in a boarding school in Ooty and have been inseparable ever since. We graduated from different colleges, in different countries, but somehow wound up in the same city, working for the same company, two years ago! Both of us love trying and buying body products, and over coffee breaks, we discovered that we can actually make them ourselves! We are equally passionate and determined, so we kept our nose to the grindstone and Bliscent was born! n What’s the secret behind the name —

best options for us at the moment and so we’re focusing all our energies on it. n From what we’ve seen — all your products

are handmade and completely natural. Is it tougher to create products that are allnatural? How much in advance do you make and store your products? Going all-natural definitely has its challenges, especially in the context of balancing out the oiliness in some of our products. We don’t add any preservatives and just let the skin absorb the natural oils and it does that quite well! We make all our products 7-10 days before a sale and they have a shelf life of six months. n Is it difficult to work together sometimes? What would you say keeps your partnership strong? We’ve been close friends for over a decade and have had many ups and a few downs in between! But, we love working with each other and wouldn’t have it any other way. n What do you think sets your brand apart

from other brands that are trying to do the same thing? We make our products with a lot of love and passion — each one is a result of sheer hard work, months of planning, preparation, mixing, re-mixing and whathave-you. It’s this pure love for what we do that sets us apart!

n We first saw you at The Lil Flea — but we

We had just debuted on Facebook and wanted to start with a bang! We’ve been fans of The Lil Flea ever since they held their first market in Mumbai and swore to ourselves that the moment we were ready to launch Bliscent, this would be the platform that we would use. We envision all women — young and young at heart, women who have desk jobs and ones who run homes, teeny-boppers and millennials. After all, which lady doesn’t like to smell great?

« just out! Garnier Fructis tripLe nutrition shampoo and conditioner

Finding the perfect shampoo for your hair can be a real test — and sticking to it can be extremely hard, what with all the brilliant marketing schemes and tempting ads that most shampoo brands come up with. Garnier Fructis’ latest offering, the Triple Nutrition shampoo and conditioner, comes in attractive, bright yellow packaging, with tall claims to nourish your hair with a formula that includes a mixture of three different oils. Unfortunately, for me this shampoo was far from nourishing. Garnier shampoos in particular are quite strong and this was no different. While the combination smells amazing, the shampoo left my hair dry and dull. And although my hair was softer after using the conditioner, I could still feel an oily residue at the roots. With such a stark contrast between the effects of both the shampoo and conditioner, I really don’t think they’re worth a second purchase. price `230 (shampoo) and `135 (conditioner) Where Retail outlets across the city rating **

We love how this piece falls on Shilpa’s figure, since it isn’t figure hugging but doesn’t leave her swathed in drapes and pleats. The shoes are just so-so, but her tasteful makeup and minimal accessories let the work on the bodice stand out as it should.

If we were at a wedding, this look would be a decent one, barring the lipstick, which we’re not fans of. The skirt falls beautifully past Deepika’s waistline, but the colour combination doesn’t make the look pop at all, and neither do the unimpressive earrings. An edgier hairdo may have created a more red-carpet worthy look here.

We love Bipasha’s hair and makeup! The slight side-bangs frame her face beautifully. While we’re not big fans of this outfit, she carries it off very gracefully, managing to skip past looking bulky, which can very easily happen with a style like this. The colour and border give the look a very regal vibe.

We love this look from the waist up. The slightly daring neckline and print on the bodice make the black and white combination of the suit stand out. However, we’re really not fans of how the sheer end, runched legs and shoes are together, making Neha look a little frumpy waist-down.

We’re not really against black and white suits, but they can get a little dull, and we wish Tabu hadn’t paired hers with equally unimpressive nude kitten heels. Also, the flared, semi-transparent sleeves are ruining an otherwise sleek silhouette for us. One thing she has going for her in this look is her fresh-faced makeup though!

Imagine having a job that requires you to act on stage and perform risky stunts at the same time. Kate Fryer tells Sara Shah what it’s like to have her unconventional job

A

day in Kate Fryer’s life involves wowing audiences with her acting prowess on stage, while performing risky stunts at the same time. In an age where most actresses prefer having stunt doubles to perform the stunts for them, Kate prefers to do them herself. And, while stunts aren’t really a necessary part of all theatrical acts, she believes that they help provide an extra dimension and thrill to an otherwise ordinary performance. Read on to find out more about what’s up her sleeve this month.

n First off, tell us a little bit about Dislocate.

In 1997, Geoffrey Dustan and I formed Dislocate, which is essentially focused on creating physical theatre acts. Our group is a vehicle that creates physical theatre, which breaks boundaries by combining risky, highly-skilled circus feats with stories. We are proud to be among Australia’s leading independent ensembles. We love creating acts that are innovative and visually exciting. All our productions include a balanced mix of circus acts, satirical comedy, romance and movements that have enthralled audiences across the world.

This Christmas, cosy up with Maspar’s latest range of festive cushions. The cushions are available in striking shades of red, with prints such as plaid and subtle checks, that are woven with fine, pure cotton threads. You can even buy cushions in navy and beige, which will lighten and refresh your home décor. An additional brushing treatment is given to the cushions, to give them a soft feel and enhance comfort. We love this collection as we believe that nothing spells Christmas like the colour red! Where Available at all exclusive Maspar stores Price `1,399 for a set of four

« Top 5 CrafT essenTials

>> A rice cooker can be a handy, multipurpose appliance to prepare a variety of dishes

Whether you’re a big fan of DIY projects or are just starting in a bid to create simple, personalised craft items, you will need these supplies in your drawer, says Dev Goswami

I

f you read our Christmas DIY story on page 13-14 and had to run out to purchase craft scissors, glue, or ribbons and pins, you’ve got to stock up on craft supplies! Here are a few basics that you will need for most DIY projects that you undertake.

1. Paint

Paints are a craft staple, so having a well-stocked paint box is essential so that you don’t have to run to a craft store in the middle of a project. It also saves you from spending on an entire bottle, when all you need is a dot of paint. Don’t get confused by the variety that is available, you can work with acrylic paint and buy other varieties such as poster, watercolour and oil paints as and when you need them. Also, remember to have a stock of paint brushes in different dimensions, as well as flat and round options.

2. Cutting knife

REINVENT WITH THE RICE COOKER

If you think that your rice cooker is only fit for steaming rice and doesn’t justify the space that it takes up on your counter-top, Shirley Mistry gives you ideas for innovative dishes that you can prepare with it

A

rice cooker is a nifty appliance to own. Not only does it completely eliminate your involvement when you’re cooking rice-based dishes, it also helps you save time and a spot on the stove, especially when you’re entertaining guests. So, take a look at some of the dishes that we love whipping up in a rice cooker.

kimChi

succulent pork ribs, with the meat falling right off the bone. Mix oil, brown sugar, paprika, BBQ sauce, vinegar and pork ribs in your rice cooker and stir until the ribs are coated well. Then, cover and cook them for an hour or until the meat flakes off the bone. We love making this recipe in a rice cooker, simply because there is hardly any cleaning up afterwards.

fRittata

While this recipe doesn’t involve cooking in a rice cooker, it makes for an excellent container for this fermented dish. Rich in vitamins and low in calories, we can’t keep our hands off a bowl of kimchi. So, if you own a rice cooker, fill it with 2 cups of water and ½ cup sea salt. Add cabbage, stir well and cover the cooker. Let the cabbage steep for around 24-30 hours, stirring occasionally, before you remove it and season it with spices and chillies. While you can use any vessel to ferment the cabbage, a rice cooker creates the perfect air tight environment, helping to speed up the process.

There’s no breakfast better than eggs and to prepare a fluffy, delicious frittata without using too much oil, try making it in a rice cooker. First, sautée vegetables of your choice until they are semicooked and set them aside. Then, add another tablespoon of oil to the rice cooker and make sure that it coats the sides as well. Simply crack in a few eggs and whisk them with a fork, in the rice cooker itself. Distribute the vegetables equally and top the frittata off with some cheese. Cook this on the regular, rice cycle of the cooker for a moist frittata.

PoRk Ribs

ChiCken souP

Pork ribs are delicious and decadent, but if you don’t have the patience to clean up a slew of vessels once you’re done, and don’t have the time to slow-cook them, toss everything into a rice cooker and an hour later, you will have

We love soups during winter, especially when we are bogged down by a stuffy cold and slaving over a stove is not a tempting prospect. But, instead of cracking open a can of readymade soup, sautée some carrots, onions and leeks in

your rice cooker, add shreds of chicken, kidney beans and spices to it and top it off with vegetable or chicken stock. You can even add chunks of potatoes or mushrooms in it. Then, simply set your cooker to a boil setting for 30 minutes and then change it to the warm setting. Do this in advance, so that the soup keeps bubbling and the flavours intensify, right until it is time for you to eat. In just 10-15 minutes, you will have a rich, flavourful and hearty soup.

ChoColate Cake Yes, you can even bake a cake in your cooker. We think this recipe is an especially good one to cook with your children, because there is no danger of them burning themselves, as there would be with an oven. Also, this cake doesn’t use eggs or milk, making it a great vegan option. Mix together 1½ cups of flour, ½ cup sugar, 5 tbsp cocoa, 1 tsp baking soda, ½ tsp cinnamon and a pinch of salt with 90ml oil, 1 cup water and 1 tbsp vinegar. Grease the dish inside the cooker, pour the batter in and cook it for an hour. Prick it with a toothpick to check if it is cooked through (the toothpick should come out clean) before taking it out of the cooker. Let it rest for 30 minutes before unmoulding it.

This is an often-overlooked, but very important craft essential. No DIY tutorial is going to mention the need for a cutting knife, but you don’t want to be stuck at a stage where you need to cut a piece of cardboard or thermocol neatly into two, but don’t know how to. Several craft stores sell knife sets with different blades, which are perfect for various materials. If you plan to work on more DIY projects, don’t hesitate to invest in such kits.

3. Ribbons

You might think that ribbons are anything but essential, but we’re going to disagree. They’re the easiest type of craft supply to accumulate over time — save scraps from gifts and boxes that you receive. We can tell you from personal experience that while you’ll come across all kinds ribbons just when you aren’t looking for them, when it comes to buying a particular design that you absolutely need, it will always be out of stock. So, save yourself the hassle, make some space in your drawer and stock it with ribbons that catch your eye. Remember to stock a healthy mix of colours, styles and thickness.

4. glue gun

An essential for experienced craft enthusiasts, a glue gun will add finesse to your projects. You can use it to create items that you can actually use in your daily life without worrying about them falling apart. A decent, mediumsized glue gun will cost around `500 and can be bought from craft stores as well as online websites. But, remember to read up about using glue guns safely and the precautions that you need to take before using one!

5. twine

Another item that not many DIY instructions mention, is a ball of twine, that can be a life-saver when things need to be put together. From applying finishing touches to a project, and repairing a broken link to hanging up Christmas decorations like we did, you never know when you might need twine!

I was late meeting my boyfriend of three months. We had both been quite busy lately and so, we were determined to see each other for some quality time. Movie and dinner it was... As I got to the cinema, I saw Rohit standing outside, chatting away on his phone. Laughing and excited... You are crazy! Yeah, I totally love it! So we’ll hook up later tonight and go over these, err.. plans??

I was kind of taken aback hat he was making plans for later that same night. But, it sounded like work and I knew he had a lot of it lately, but seemed quite keen on it — complaining, in the most perfunctory way, and sometimes, only for my benefit I think... So, I decided not to be that whiny girlfriend. Instead... I heard that! Huh? Hi...

Now, 5-kg LPG cylinder at subsidised rate N

EW DELHI: In a move that will give cooking gas consumer more choice, state oil marketing companies have started selling mini 5-kg LPG cylinders at subsidised rates. Till now, cooking gas (LPG) was available for domestic use in 14.2kg cylinders. Consumers were entitled to 12 such bottles in a year at subsidised rate of Rs 417 in Delhi. Now the subsidised cooking gas is also available in 5-kg packs, costing Rs.155 per cylinder in Delhi. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Rajya Sabha yesterday that consumers can avail of 34 cylinders of 5-kg in a year at subsidised rates. Any requirement beyond that would have to be bought at market price of Rs 351 per bottle. Like the 14.2-kg cylinders, the mini subsidised packs are available at the regular LPG dealer or distributors. 5-kg LPG cylinders are available at select petrol pumps at Rs 351. "Public sector oil marketing companies have reported that they are already marketing subsidised 5-kg cylinders up to 34 cylinders in a year per connection,” Pradhan told Rajya Sabha.

Putin-Modi summit today; Oppn targets govt over Nuclear energy, oil in focus re-conversions, FIR filed N

EW DELHI: Expansion of ties in a range of crucial sectors like nuclear energy, hydrocarbons and defence will be in focus when Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliberate at the annual summit here tomorrow with an aim to further strengthen the already close strategic partnership. In his talks with Modi, both in restricted and delegation level formats, Putin is likely to seek deeper economic engagement with the "time-tested" ally to negate affect of sanctions against Russia by the US and its Western allies over the Ukraine issue. Both sides are looking at inking 15-20 pacts following the summit which has been taking place since 2000 alternately in Moscow and New Delhi. Ahead of his visit, Putin termed ties with India as "privileged strategic partnership" and said construction of new nuclear plants besides military and technical cooperation was high on the agenda for talks. He said Russia was keen to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India and involve ONGC in oil and gas hunt in the Arctic. Energy-starved India, which is the third largest oil importer after the US and China -- has been pushing for greater involvement in major gas and oil exploration projects in Russia and both the leaders are set to discuss the issue. Russia is one of the top oil producers globally and has huge reserves of natural gas. In the nuclear energy sector, Russia may offer to set up a total of 20-

24 nuclear energy production units in India against previously agreed 14-16 plants. Both sides are also likely to come out with a roadmap for cooperation in the overall energy sector. Russian Ambassador Alexander Kadakin said the two countries will start negotiations for setting up of units five and six at the Kudankulam nuclear power complex soon and may sign a technical pact for units 3 and 4 during Putin's stay here. Russia was awaiting India's decision to allot a site for construction of a new Russian-designed nuclear power plant and the issue may figure in the talks. Putin will be accompanied by around 15 business tycoons from Russia and both Modi and the Russian President are expected to jointly interact with CEOs of major companies from both the countries as enhancing trade ties will be a major item on the agenda of the summit. The volume of bilateral trade was USD 10 billion in 2013 and both sides feel there was "huge opportunity" to improve it significantly. India has been working to have a trade pact with "Eurasian space" for improved trade and commerce which will also improve trade with Russia. India's exports, particularly food items, to Russia have gone up since sanctions were imposed against that country by Western nations for its interventions in the crisis in Ukraine. India has been maintaining that it cannot be party to any economic sanctions against Russia.

EW DELHI/AGRA: The alleged forced reconversion of about 100 people to Hinduism in Agra by an RSS affiliate set off a chorus of criticism against the government on Wednesday by the Opposition inside and outside Parliament with its leaders calling it illegal and demanding 'strict' action. Responding to the attack by the opposition who also demanded the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government washed its hands off the issue, saying it had no role and that law and order is a state subject. Leaders of BJP claimed the reconversion was voluntary and it was not forcibly done. The Agra police, meanwhile, filed an FIR against a Hindu outfit, an RSS offshoot, over the incident

on Monday. The Sadar Bazaar Police, which filed the FIR, launched investigation into the case against Dharma Jagran Manch and its UP convener Kishore, reports PTI. Police registered cases under Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups) and Section 415 (using fraudulent means) of the IPC. It has been alleged in the FIR that promises were held out by the organisers which included getting BPL cards and housing plots for those who embraced Hinduism. Raising the issue in Rajya Sabha, BSP chief Mayawati alleged that RSS-affiliate Bajrang Dal converted some Muslim families to Hinduism in Agra by force and by allurement.

Members of Hindu organisations perform a ceremony for the conversion of Muslim families in Agra, on Monday.

The District Consumer Redressal Forum Thane, has directed ICICI Bank and ICICI Lombard General Insurance company to pay Rs 35,000 as compensation along with the claim amount to the complainant in a motor accident claim case of 2007. In their order delivered on December 8, president of the forum M Y Mankar and members Madhuri Vishwarupe and N D Kadam directed ICICI bank and its insurance arm to jointly pay Kusum Sharma, a resident of Airoli in Navi Mumbai, a sum of Rs 35,000 as compensation along with an insurance claim of Rs one lakh. In her complaint filed in November, 2007 with the forum, Sharma said that her husband Ashok Sharma had taken a credit card from ICICI bank, which also provided a accident cover of Rs 1 lakh. Her husband died in an accident in March, 2007, following which she had filed a claim with the insurance company and the bank. But, she did not get any response from either of them. The bank, in its response argued that there was no proof of the claimant was the legal heir of the deceased and that they did not receive any notice from the complainant’s side, which was dismissed by the forum. The bank told the forum that the benefit of the insurance was available to the customer for a period of one year, from April 2005 to April 2006. Forum members, however, observed that it cannot be categorically stated that the bank had given papers and policy regarding the scheme to the policy holder and informed them while withdrawing it. Hence, they were liable to pay the compensation to the complainant.

F

inance Minister Arun Jaitley will meet his state counterparts to iron out the "challenges" in rolling out the Goods and Services Tax (GST) today . The meeting would "discuss some of the challenges that the states see at this point of time", Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of Delhi Economics Conclave here yesterday. "On GST we are working on variety of discussions with the states. The legislative aspects of the GST are complicated, they have to be approved by the states. CST compensation is one of the item which is under discussion," he said. The

Centre is working towards rolling out the GST from April 1, 2016, and is in discussion with states to insulate their revenues from the impact of the GST. The GST will subsume indirect taxes like excise duty and service tax at the central level and VAT and local levies on the states front. Sinha said once the issues are resolved the Centre can come up with the legislative calender. The GST Constitutional Amendment Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2011, had lapsed and the NDA government will be required to come up with a fresh bill. States have been demanding that petroleum, alcohol and tobacco be kept out of the purview of the GST. The

GST roll out has missed several deadlines because of lack of consensus among states over certain crucial issues on the proposed new tax regime. On easing restrictions on gold imports, Sinha said the intention of the government was to enable the jewellery sector function efficiently. The government had last month scrapped the 80:20 scheme for gold imports under which at least 20% of the imported gold had to be mandatorily exported before bringing in new lots. Gold imports jumped 280% to USD 4.17 billion in October, as per the latest trade data. The in-bound shipments touched 95 tonnes in September this year as against 12 tonnes a year ago.

Research Entities Have To File For Registration By May 2015 By A Business Reporter

ntities, which provide research reports on securities, will have to compulsorily apply for registration with markets watchdog Sebi by end of May 2015 under new norms that came into effect from this month. However, individuals employed as research analyst with an entity are not required obtain registration certificate from Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Besides, the new set of norms for research analysts which came into effect from December 1 also require journalists who offer opinion on securities and public issues through media, to obtain registration with the capital market regulator. "Transition period of six months from the date of commencement of Research Analysts (RA) Regulations has been provided to the existing persons acting as research analyst or research entity before commencement of the RA Regulations to comply with certification, qualification, segregation of research activity from other activities, etc," Sebi said in a public communication. "However, they are required to file an application for grant of registration within the said period of six months from the commencement of the regulations that is December 1, 2014, to continue to do so thereafter," it added. Entities which fail to file an application for grant of registration within the time period of six months would have to "stop acting as research analyst". "If any person is found to be acting as research analyst without making an application for grant of registration under RA regulations after expiry of such period that is May 31, 2015, appropriate action as deemed fit...May be initiated," the market regulator said. Interestingly, Sebi regulations also cover individuals including journalists who make public ap-

pearance or make comments through the public media for giving opinion or recommendations concerning securities or on public offers. "Journalists employed by various news organisations and who comment on specific stock with proper research, which get published in news paper, etc. have to comply with provisions... of Sebi (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014," Sebi said. However, the norms do not cover communications through public media related to general trends in the securities market, discussions on the broad-based indices, commentaries on economic, political or market conditions. Besides, persons offering statistical summaries of financial data of the companies, technical analyses relating to the demand and supply in a sector or index based on trading volume and price on public media do not require registration as a research analyst. Sebi also clarified that journalists who are on the payrolls of media agency such as newspaper or television "are not required to get registered with Sebi". Registration would be mandatory if such media persons make public appearance or offer opinion concerning securities or public issued through public media. Moreover, merchant banks, investment banks, brokerage services and underwriting services that issue research report and other intermediaries "to whom there is no specific exemption under RA Regulations are covered under the definition of research entity". The norms do not cover personnel engaged in clerical activities, back office assistance, support services, among others, in relation to publication and distribution of research report. Research Analyst regulations aim to safeguard Indian markets from any manipulative research reports including by foreign entities.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014

TV TATTLE Shishir Sharma enters ‘Shastri Sisters’ Noted actor Shishir Sharma will enter the TV show 'Shastri Sisters' on Colors as a corrupt politician. Sharma, who was last seen in a small role in 'Mary Kom', will also be playing the father of Karishma. "I understand how my character must feel for his daughter Karishma. I have two very lovely daughters and I will go to any extent to make their dreams come true. As for Shastri Sisters, I have known Neelu Kohli, Sudhaji, Rajesh Jais and Girish Sahdev from long back," Sharma said.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

Gautam Rode is the hunky actor in ‘Saraswati Chandra’ and is know to host various reality shows like ‘Nach Baliye 6’. He has also acted in popular films like ‘Agyaat’. He is now getting ready to act in his most lavish show yet – 'Mahakumbh – Ek Rahasya Ek Kahani' – on Life OK. We had a chat with the well chiseled actor about his new show. This is what he told us.

Tell us something about 'Mahakumbh – Ek Rahasya Ek Kahani' It is the untold tale of the biggest Indian legend, in a contemporary mytho-thriller format. I play the protagonist Rudra in quite a heroic avatar. With Mahakumbh, national award winner and veteran actress Seema Biswas will make her television debut. Actors Payal Rajput, Manish Wadhwa, Robin Das, Ketki Dave and child actor Siddharth Nigam will also be seen essaying pivotal roles.

Made to fit

Veteran Hindi film, television and stage actor Ashalata Vabgavkar will be seen in the popular family drama on Zee Marathi's ‘Javai Vikat Ghene Aahe’ from next week. She will be essaying the mother of Savita Prabhune who essays the lead character Mrs. Veena Pradhan. Vabgavkar's character will tame the fiery Mrs Veena Pradhan with her strict discipline and brimstone personality. The makers of the show said that when they thought of this character, it was only Ashalata they thought of.

Who is Rudra? Rudra is an ordinary man with extraordinary powers. Rudra separates from his family as a child and meets Udiya baba (Robin Das) who takes him to the Ghats of Varanasi where MaiiMuii (Seema Biswas) protects and raises him. Rudra spends his childhood on the Ghats around the funeral pyres, oblivious to the unprecedented powers he possesses. But he eventually discovers his purpose of existence that will lead him to the secret of the Mahakumbh.

Young detective

Star Plus will soon introduce 'Private Investigator', a detective drama journey with Raffe Roy Chaudhary (Mrunal Dutt) who with his extraordinary observation skills goes about solving crimes that baffle even the police. Tune in to the show from December 7, every Sunday at 8 pm as the youngest private investigator solves one new case every week. Raffe is calm and reserved and is emotionally attached to his mother Anita Roy Chaudhary (Sandhya Mridul) who has kept him away from a dark secret about his past that could change his life forever.

What is the USP of the show? The show is shot cross the world, from Poland to the Ghats of Varanasi and Mumbai, packed with breath-taking stunts, advanced technology and intriguing storyline. It will be a visual treat for our audiences.

Chance meeting

Sony's ‘Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar’ track sees Ragini (Pallavi Kulkarni) gearing up for her daughter Nishi's wedding. With wedding preparations on in full swing, Nishi also wants her father Neil (Ronit Roy) to be part of the wedding festivities. Not one to miss his daughter’s wedding, Neil decides to come back from the US to India to be part of the functions. The wedding brings Neil and Ragini face to face for the first time after a period of 15 years of separation. Both taken aback by each other’s presence, they greet each other with an awkward silence.

What made you accept this show? 'Mahakumbh...' has a very unique concept and I was certain to take it up when I heard the script for the first time. A character as powerful as Rudra required me to be physically and mentally fit to substantiate its ruggedness. I underwent a lot of training to get into the skin of the character. I worked on my physique and had tattoos all over my body and also learnt some stunts which I have to perform in the show.

Mythological comedy

Big Magic brings forth an all new mythological comedy series 'Bal Gopal Kare Dhamaal' on December 22. Pumping up the comedy quotient will be ace actor Satyajit Sharma, who has adorned many roles in the television and film industry. He will playing the role of Sharma-ji who will be bestowed upon with the Almighty’s presence. The story revolves around the unique equation between a common man and god in modern settings. The show will be aired at 8.30 pm every weeknight.

You also anchor shows. What satisfies you more – hosting or acting? I like to perform characters on daily shows. Of course anchoring reality shows gives me a lot of satisfaction too.

PLEASURE IN FINITE SERIES S

andhya Mridul, who is making a comeback on TV after a decade, says she does not consider the length of the role, but the role itself when she opts for a show. Sandhya, 39, plays a mother in the newly launched detective TV drama 'Private Investigator', where actor Mrinal Dutt plays the titular character. "I am very secure as an actress. I don't get insecure about the length and the kind of character I am playing onscreen. I just look out for edgy roles and it does not matter to me whether I get to do that in the role of a mother, grand-

mother, sister or daughter," Mridul told PTI. Mridul was last seen in reality show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' after ending her double role stint in TV soap 'Hubahu'. "I think I have played almost every role on-screen. I played a bahu and did a reality show. I was not getting anything new and did not take up shows just for the heck of it. I don't want to bore my audience with same kind of role," she said. The 'Page 3' star is happy with the concept of the new Star Plus' show and says that her character has many

shades as it proceeds further. "The best part of 'Private Investigator' is that it's a finite series and the screenplay is intriguing. Even the role which I am playing has lots of shades and people will get to know about my character more in the upcoming episodes," she said. Mridul's comeback on TV has been applauded by her industry friends and fans on social-networking sites and she finds the gesture very rewarding. "I am very passionate and emotional about my work on the sets. I have always been

fortunate that people liked my roles. I find it very rewarding when your commitment and passion pay off," she said. Mridul started her career in showbiz with the 1995 hit soap opera 'Swabhimaan' followed by 'Banegi Apni Baat', 'Koshish' and 'Hubahu'. The actress feels TV is going through an interesting phase now with the 'finite series' as such shows give an actor their creative space. "This new trend of finite series has given TV a new lease of life. Actors also get bored of playing similar characters for ages. Through such shows, actors get their creative juices back. Audience are also liking such shows," she said.

Clarke, Smith tons prop Australia to mammoth score as India struggle to find their feet

By Chetan Narula

Michael Clarke receives attention to his back from his wife, Kyly, during a rain delay during the second day of the Test match.

Clarke has shown unbelievable courage: Smith

By Chetan Narula

A

DELAIDE: Australian batsman Steve Smith feels skipper Michael Clarke has shown "unbelievable" courage in the wake of the tragic death of Phillip Hughes and played "beautifully" today battling severe back pain to score a century on day 2 of the first cricket Test against India. After retiring at the score of 60 yesterday, Clarke returned to the crease this morning and scored his 28th Test hundred, despite being in pain in his lower back, as Australia closed on 517-7. Smith added 163 runs in 30 overs with Clarke, who was finally out for 128 runs towards the end of the rain-hit second day at Adelaide Oval. "He was keen to get out there and get some hits and it worked out well for him. There were a few shots that hurt him but he played beautifully under the circumstances," Smith told reporters here. "I think he has been amazing over the last few days. It's been tough for all of us. By spending that whole time by Hugey's family side, just the strength and courage Clarke has showed to us, that is unbelievable. He must be mentally drained," he added. Clarke was in the thick of things when his close friend and teammate Hughes was fatally hit on the area around the head and neck by a bouncer in a domestic game. He supported the Hughes' family throughout the crisis. Talking about his innings, Smith, who notched up his fifth Test hundred hitting 162 not out, attributed his newfound patience as the reason behind his batting form.

Our batsmen will make up for bowlers: India’s fielding coach

A

DELAIDE: Captain Michael Clarke fought through pain to slam 128, while Steve Smith also produced a career-best hundred against India's hapless bowling attack as Australia piled up a mammoth 517 for seven to take control of the first cricket Test on a raintruncated second day. Clarke defied a back injury, which had forced him to leave the field yesterday, to notch up his 28th Test ton and combined with Smith (162 not out) to steer Australia to a commanding position on a stop-start day. It was a frustrating day for the Indians as they leaked runs and managed to garner just one wicket at the fag end of play by getting rid of Clarke with debutant Karn Sharma providing the breakthrough. The Indian pace bowlers were far from impressive as they bowled a poor line and length and seldom troubled the Australians. Clarke, despite BRIEF SCORES: Australia the back injury, 517/7 in 120.0 overs [Michael managed to play Clarke 128, Steven Smith his shots effortbatting 162] vs India. lessly, presented too often by loose deliveries by a rather listless atADELAIDE TEST tack. Smith, on the other hand, continued his good form to clinch his fifth Test century and was undefeated on a career-best 162 when play was called off early due to fading light and rain interruptions. In all, there were three rain interruptions during the day on which merely 30 overs could be bowled. Emotions were still running high in the aftermath of Phillip Hughes' death and both Clarke and Smith looked heaven-wards after completing their hundreds to pay tributes to the late batsman, who was named the honourary 13th man before the match. For the Indians, however, it

India might be left with a mountain of runs to climb in the first cricket Test but fielding coach R Sridhar was confident that the batsmen will make up for the bowlers' poor show. India's hapless bowling attack allowed Australia to pile up a mammoth 517 for seven and take control of the first Test after a raintruncated second day but Sridhar gave credit to Australia's batsmen for making use of a good wicket. "We must give credit to the Australian batsmen who countered the conditions and the regular rain breaks. They made good use of this good Test wicket and they have put up runs on the board," said Sridhar after the second day, which saw captain Michael Clarke slam 128 and Steve Smith produce a career-best unbeaten 162.

DOWNUNDER

was only frustration and Virat Kohli could barely hide his disappointment with his bowlers, who just could not find their rhythm. The three quick wickets picked up last evening had brought the visitors back into the game but the momentum was quickly lost today when Clarke and Smith put on 163 runs for the seventh wicket, scoring at a brisk rate. Nearly four hours of cricket were lost as intermittent showers sent the players off the field time and again. The first break came in the morning session after the first hour's play. Nearly the entire postlunch session, barring 30 minutes, was lost thereafter. The umpires decided to do away with the tea-break and play the last session of the day for an extended three hours.

Best pace attack India will have in near future: Ishant N

EW DELHI: Praising the Indian pace quintet picked for the ongoing Test series in Australia, speedster Ishant Sharma said the present attack is the best the national cricket team will possess in the near future. After Bhuvneshwar Kumar was ruled out of the first two Tests against Australia due to injury, the team management went ahead with Mohammed Shami, Varun

Aaron and Ishant ahead of Umesh Yadav for the first match. Ishant believes the new pace battery is well equipped. "According to me this is the best fast bowling attack that India will probably have in the near future. I don't think there is any upcoming bowler in the fray who is capable of bowling 140-plus regularly," Ishant told 'bcci.Tv'.

"Along with pace you also need to have the understanding about your game, body and the ability to adapt and adjust according to the demand of the situation. That will give you more control over the ball. Pace with control is a lethal combination. These things come only with experience and our young pacers will get there soon," he added.

While Shami and Aaron picked two wickets each on the opening day, the opening bowling duo was guilty of letting away Day 1 centurion David Warner in the first spell. Ishant said the youngsters will learn with time. "This is their first tour to Australia. They didn't have any first hand experience of how aggressively the Aussies bat. In England you can get away with a little width be-

cause they would still defend it away. But that margin of error is very narrow with the Australians," he said. "Initially, our pacers didn't expect the wicket to be so slow – in Australia you expect more bounce and pace but that is not the case with this pitch. They figured that out eventually and changed their line of attack accordingly. They will learn with experience," he added.

BCCI President’s election deferred till January end N

EW DELHI: Still grappling with the IPL scam case, the Supreme Court deferred BCCI President's election till the end of January even as the cricket board opposed constitution of an external high-powered committee to propose punishment on the Mudgal Committee findings. A bench headed by Justice T S Thakur also posed questions like should the actions of Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra lead to cancellation of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Rajasthan Royals (RR) teams. "We are still in the process of hearing which will take some time to conclude," the Bench observed at the end of yet another day-long hearing directing postponement of the BCCI's December 17 Annual General Meeting (AGM) for office bearers' election till January 31, 2015. The decisions the Bench, also comprising Justice F M I Kalifulla said, has to give will be on several issues arising out of IPL 6 betting and spot fixing, including the conflict of interest involving N Srinivasan, BCCI President in exile, will take more time. It passed the order after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Srinivasan, said that since the hearing was not likely to complete before December 17, the election for office bearers has to be postponed, a point with which it agreed. The BCCI counsel said the Board will have to issue notice of three weeks for holding the election. Till now the AGM has been postponed thrice from September 26 to November 20 and then to

December 17 and now till Janaury 31, 2015.Opposing the setting up of a highpowered committee to look into the matter regarding Srinivasan's conflict of interest and punishment to be meted out on the basis of Mudgal committee report,BCCI counsel C A Sundaram said that it would affect its autonomy and any decision in this regard, if required, must be decided by the governing body of the Board. The hearing saw for the first time Srinivasan's sonin-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who has been indicted by Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee for betting in the IPL, taking the opportunity to explain his stand. He maintained that he would not like to disclose whether he was a team official of CSK or not as any disclosure would prejudice him in the trial court where he is facing a betting case. "I have a right to silence," his counsel Siddharth Luthra said while maintaining that Meiyappan is facing trial and that the issue whether he is a CSK official will arise there. After brief submissions by his counsel, the bench observed that "You have taken this stand after BCCI and India Cements Ltd, the owners of CSK, have accepted that you are a team official. Still you want to stay noncommittal." Luthra questioned the Mudgal Committee over relying on the FIR lodged by the Mumbai Police and statement of witnesses recorded by the police during probe under section 161 of CrPC indicting Meiyappan for betting.

CONFIDENT INDIA EYE BELGIUM SCALP FOR A SEMI-FINAL BERTH SPORTS

By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

B

HUBANESWAR: Their morale lifted by a stunning win over the Netherlands, India would now eye a semifinal berth when they take on an everimproving Belgium in the quarterfinal of the Hero Champions Trophy hockey tournament, here today. India did not have the best of starts in the elite eight-nation tournament as they slumped to 0-1 and 2-4 defeats against Olympic champions Germany and World Cup bronze-medallist Argentina respectively in their first two Pool B matches. After losing to a late goal against the Germans in their tournament opener, India squandered the lead twice to slump to a 2-4 defeat against Argentina. Their morale definitely took a beating after two defeats and just when they were being counted out, the Sardar Singh-led side produced an inspiring performance to shock the Netherlands 3-2 in their final league match and finish third in Pool B ahead of the mighty Germans. After the splendid show against the Netherlands yesterday, India will definitely fancy their chances against the fourth-ranked Belgium. But it would be easier said than done as Belgium and England looked like the teams to beat in the tournament and finished their pool engagements on an unbeaten note. While England topped Pool A with seven points from two wins and a draw, the Red

Rupinder Singh of India celebrates after scoring the third goal against Netherland in the Champions Trophy at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday. Lions finished second with five points by virtue of one win and two draws. But knock-out rounds are a completely different ball game as one bad day in office can spoil the entire hardwork of a team and Belgium would be completely aware of the fact. Against all expectations, Sardar Singh and Co came up with a superlative display to register their first win over

It is also India's first win over the Netherlands in the Champions Trophy after 1986 in Karachi.

BHUBANESWAR: His native country ended up on the losing side today, but India's High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans was a relieved man after the hosts stunned the Netherlands 3-2 in a Pool B match of the Hero Champions Trophy hockey tournament here. "Nobody expected us to win against the Netherlands today. We were the underdogs," he told reporters after the match. India produced an inspired performance to register their first win over the Netherlands in 18 years when they stunned the World Cup and Olympic silver medallists Dutch side in the high-voltage encounter to finish third in Pool B.
