the police officers of Vakola police station who traced her family to a remote area in the state of Telangana. The woman was found by the Vakola Police on the pavement in the suburbs recently following an information passed by the Mumbai Police Control Room which informed them about her. The police officials not only took her custody from the Bandra Court under mental health act section (25), but also admitted her to the Cooper Hospital in Santacruz. While in the custody of police, the woman gave a statement to police that she was separated from her family last month from Khandva station in Madhya Pradesh while re-

turning from Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Speaking to ADC, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Santosh Dange of Vakola Police station said, “Around two weeks back, we got call from Mumbai Police control room which informed us that a woman was creating nuisance by hurling stones on passerby and her clothes were torn at the Prabhat Colony area near Santacruz railway station. We reached on the spot and brought her to Vakola police station and she appeared mentally unstable. Later, we sent her to Cooper hospital and made case papers under Section (25) of Mental Health Act and submitted papers in Bandra court. One woman constable Pramila Gavit stayed with her day and night. We

and doctors at hospital tried very hard to find out where she belonged to.” He further added, “Finally after two days she informed us she is from Rickshaw Colony, Vikarabad, Telangana and that her name is Shamina Begum Baig. At first, we doubted if we should even believe this. However, when we searched on Google Maps about the place and tried to contact the local police. However, no one was answering phone.” The cops, however, without any confirmation from local cops decided to send team to Vikarabad Telangana. Team of two cops constable Sagar Kunchikurve and More was sent by the long-distance train

local court on Wednesday extended the police remand of 35year-old lawyer Jahnvi Gadkar, accused of mowing down 2 persons while driving a luxury car under the influence of alcohol, till June 12. The magistrate's court in Kurla observed that the police have made out sufficient ground against the accused to seek extension of police custody, reports PTI. The police told the court that they need to gather more evidence against her for which her custodial interrogation was necessary. "The police have visited the hotel where the accused got drunk at a party and have recorded some statements. However, police need to gather more evidence. Statement of eyewitnesses and her colleagues who were with her at the party are yet to be recorded," public prosecutor Prahlad Mahajan told the court. On Tuesday, in the early hours, an Audit A3 driven by Gadkar had rammed into a taxi, killing two people including its driver on the Eastern Freeway, after which she was arrested. The deceased were identified as Mohammad Abdul Sayyad, (55), the driver, and Mohammad Salim Sabuwala (50). to Telangana. Kunchikurve said, “It was very difficult task to trace the family as it is complete jungle area and it took two days for us to trace her family. She is actually a civic body employee and her husband Attahulla is clerk working with the Indian railway. We brought her elder son with us to Mumbai and he identified her.” Speaking to ADC, Asadulla said, “On May 16, my mother, father and two sisters went to Ajmer Sharif Dargah. On May 22, they took return journey. When the train halted at Khandva railway station, my mother got down to buy bananas. However, the train started moving and she fell down and missed the train. My father alighted at the next station at Akola and went to Khandva back. However, she was missing and so we made missing complaint and tried to locate her. We searched her at Khandva, Ajmer and several other places but could not find her.” He added, “We are thankful to Vakola police officials who reunited us with my mother and they did great job. Without them I would have never found my mother. However we are still wondering how she came to Mumbai?” On Wednesday, cops got order from Bandra court and Shamina Begum’s custody was given to her son. Asadulla said, “By the train this night, we will go back to our home in Telangana.” PSI Dange said, “We are very happy and satisfied by doing this job.” While Senior Police Inspector (SPI-Additional charge) Uttam Kadlak said, “Constable Sagar Kunchikurve, constable More and PSI Dange has worked hard in this case to reunite her with her family members.”

T

he slums across Mumbai have always been a cause of concern to citizens and authorities alike. There was always an issue of slum dwellers extending their homes by one floor. This had been routinely opposed by the BMC and therefore there have been numerous incidents of the civic body demolishing the first floors in the slums. The conflict, however, has come to an end as the High Court has given the permission to slum dwellers to build 'ground plus one' structures. BJP MP Gopal Shetty along with Improvement Committee Chairman Prakash Gangadhare had put in a request to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the same. Also, the issue of demolition of already existing first floors was brought up. “Chawls with two to three floors have always exited in Mumbai. So why deny the

people living in relatively new slums to have more space. Also with coming monsoons, this will give them more relief,” said Shetty, who was evidently in favour of rehabilitating as many slums as he could. He blamed RTI activists that because of their complaints that illegal structures were built and hence the BMC went and demolished the first floors of the slum dwellers.

n a bid to ensure that plantation of trees elsewhere against trees cut by project developers executing infrastructure and other projects, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar disclosed that the government will use technology like Google Earth to keep a track on the actual trees planted. He said that the move will put an end to the practice of showing plantation, transplantation of trees elsewhere only on paper. Replying to queries from newspersons here at Sahyadri State Guest House on Mumbai Coastal Road, Javadekar categorically stated that under no circumstances the High Tide line will be changed. Javadekar further added that the Center, State government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) laws will be embedded with the clause that will not allow any commercial activity on the reclaimed land. Javadekar said the govern-

Javadekar said that the government intends to introduce the Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) bill in the ensuing monsoon session of the parliament that will pave the way to unlocking of Rs 38,000 crore compensatory afforestation funds which had been lying idle since last decade. Lead poisoning a serious threat By Abhishek Vissapragada

A

ccording to the study, an analysis of 733 blood samples collected by Metropolis Healthcare revealed that 23.47 percent of the total samples tested positive with lead poisoning. Lead poisoning was tested using high sensitivity technology called ICPMS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The study was done across all age groups in various cities including Mumbai since 2014 and it found that lead poisoning was prevalent across all the groups. Dr. Sandeep Warghade, Consulting Pathologist at Metropolis Healthcare said the study was done on those who volunteered to check and were suspected for lead poisoning. All the patients were working class people. “The study cannot be extrapolated to that of the general population,” said Dr. Warghade. In the study, the age group of 30 to 40 years had the most number of blood samples found positive for lead poisoning wherein 157 samples were tested and 55 were found positive. This was followed by the age group of 20 to 30 years wherein 255 samples were tested and 36 were

found positive. Dr. Warghade said the people who worked in factories of paint, pipes, automobiles, etc were at higher risk of lead poisoning. “Such people are exposed to lead continuously and thus need to get a regular health check up done to get timely treatment,” said Dr. Warghade. The age group with the lowest number of samples found positive for lead poi-

soning include between 2 to 10 years, wherein 43 samples were tested for 70 to 80 years, 12 samples were tested and for 80 and above years 6 samples were tested and only 3 were found positive in all the groups for lead poisoning. “While companies have done their best to avoid lead while producing paints, there are still some products that have lead in their paints. Children that also use toys

containing lead are at high risk of lead poisoning. In slum areas, the soil or water can be contaminated with lead and thus measures should be taken to decrease children as well as adult exposure to lead,” said Dr. Warghade. According to a WHO study, lead exposure is estimated to account for 1,43,000 deaths per year with the highest burden in developing regions.

Soon, a centralized ‘Chain Snatcher’ software By Asif Rizvi oncerned by rampant chain-snatching incidents in the city, Mumbai Police have decided to centralize the data and information regarding the repeated offenders. Mumbai Police is planning to introduce a system that will carry the data of the chain snatchers. The Software will also be centralized and shared will all the police stations across the city and the traffic de-

conduct regular awareness announcements in crowded places in different languages of precautionary measures to be taken to avoid falling prey to snatchers, this has been very beneficial in our region. The Malad Police Station in North Mumbai region have also been recently appreciated by public figures to follow and enforce such measures.” The software will have numbers given to regular offenders, so even if they fake their identities the number

partment will too have access to the past records of the chain snatchers. Deputy Police Commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “We are currently working on the plan, however, once it is available, it will surely help curb chain snatching incidents.” Additional Commissioner of Police Fathesingh Patil, who has already enforced different precautions to curb chain snatching incidents in North Mumbai region said, “We have identified and drawn a list of regular offenders with their photographs which have been circulated among the various police stations. We

already listed in the software will help catch them. The software will list the snatchers crime records, their address and police stations name where they are wanted or arrested earlier. According to an official, “Approximately 20 chain snatching incidents take place everyday in the city. The accused sometimes cover their faces with cloth or wear helmets, so CCTV does not capture their faces. However when arrested these accused at times fake their identities with fake identity cards, Once the software is developed it will surely help drop the rate in chain snatching incidents.”

Ponder awhile... “Governance is a way of organizing, amplifying, and constraining power.” — Rebecca MacKinnon

Not fit for governance? T

O become a minister, one does not have to be graduate. The AAP law minister made the mistake of claiming he is a graduate when he was not. Graduation does not qualify a politician to occupy top jobs. To become a politician, a man or a woman require other qualifications. An important qualification is the gift. With this gift, a politician can easily connect with the people. It is also to be noted that there have been in our country politicians who have never went to a college, and who never have any kind of degree. It was unnecessary that the law minister should have claimed to be a degree holder. He has resigned now but he has left Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers to face the music. The incident has given a bad name to the party. The Congress and the BJP have a big stick to beat the hapless AAP with. They are going to take full advantage of this incident and derive maximum benefits. It is a fact, however, that Arvind Kejriwal’s team is immature and lack experience. That perhaps is the reason why unexpected, strange things are happening in the government. The important question of governance takes a back seat and we see wrangling, unexpected developments taking place. The AAP folks mean well perhaps, but they lack in the capacity to govern.

T is said that India is the nation with many diversities and cultures. We proudly proclaim that India has a unity in its diversities. However, the day-to-day experience shows that we have much diversity of cultures, religions, faiths, languages and also thinking. Therefore, India has become a land of diversities and differences. There seem to be differences among all stakeholders of the nation. Obviously, there are political differences. Beyond that there are differences between various religious groups, states, regions, castes and cultures. Many a times, the differences are so wide to bridge by amicable means that they end up in violence and riots. By doing this, differences are further widened. These days, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is busy bringing the Indian sub-continent closer and has achieved a significant success in his effort, the national fabric back in India seem to be becoming more fragile. This situation makes the nation weak and susceptible to any ailment. When the Union Government declared to observe and celebrate 21st June as the International Yoga Day, instead of jubilation, we saw protests within the country. Actually, as Indians, all of us should have been happy and proud that Yoga being one of the oldest form of exercise, is getting world recognition. However, some sections of the society smelt rat in this move and started a frontal attack against Modi and his men. For them Yoga has a Hindu religion overtone. By preaching Yoga, Modi was trying to profess Hindu religion, they said. I do not wish to get in to this controversy. Yes, it's true that Yoga is a part of various practices of Hindu religion. However, it remains a form of physical exercise. Hindu religious practices has many such avenues; those necessarily do not indulge in religious prayers. Apart from Yoga, Ayurveda finds its routes in Indian culture. It is not connected to the religion, but deals with medical science, though the form of teaching in formulas is Shloka. They form one of the four Vedas 'Yajurveda'.

The government has decided to have a huge demonstration of Yoga performance at Delhi on that day, when thousands of people will perform Yoga. THINKING ALOUD

‘It is success which brings success’ T

HERE are persons who are willing to sacrifice anything, or to persevere as much as it requires for even a small wish which they does not value very much when it comes to value. Yet they give it every thought and does everything in their power to make that wish come true. Such persons are taking the same path as the path of the master. He must have success, and it is success which brings success. If once a person is successful, his success attracts success. Once a person fails then this failure attracts failure; for the same reason that, if a person is on the path of accomplishment, each accomplishment gives him a greater power to go forward, and when he is on the path that goes downward then every step leads him downward. Now arises the question which desire and wish one must give up and which one must rear. One must have discrimination. If there is no discrimination one will take a wrong way; it may lead to success, but it will be a success in a wrong way. If one rears every desire and wish, and thinks, 'This must be accomplished', then sometimes it may be right

and sometimes wrong. Discrimination must first be developed in order to understand what leads one to happiness, a lasting happiness, a greater peace, a higher attainment. But once a person has discrimination and has chosen a wish, then he should not analyze it too much. Many have formed a habit of analyzing everything every day. If a person holds

MATTER & SPIRIT a wish for ten years and every day analyzes it in his mind he acts against it. And now comes the question whether it is wrong if a person expresses his wish in prayer, for many people say, 'God knows everything, so why should we tell God that such and such a thing should be done. God knows the secret of every heart. Besides, is it not selfish to bring our wish before God? If it is a good wish, it must come true of itself.' The answer is that prayer is a reminder to God, prayer is a song sung before God who enjoys it, who hears it, who is reminded about something. But one

thinks, 'How can our prayer, our little voice reach God?' It reaches God through our ears. God is within us. If our soul can hear our voice, God can hear it too. Prayer is the best way, because the wish is beautifully expressed, which harmonizes us with God, which brings about a greater relationship between man and God. Then one may ask whether it is good to think about the wish one has. One can never think too many times of the wish one has. Dream about it, think about it and imagine it, keep it in mind, retain it in mind and do everything possible towards its fulfillment – but with poise, with tranquility, with patience, with confidence, with ease, and not by thinking hard about it. The one who thinks hard about his wish destroys it, for it is just like overheating, or giving too much water to a plant: the very thing that should help it, destroys it. If a person worries about his wish he certainly either has no patience, or he has some fear or some doubt; all these things destroy the wish. The wish must be cherished easily, with comfort, with hope, with confidence and with patience. Doubt is like rust, it eats into it; fear is still worse, it destroys it. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Foreign policy and Modi’s historic step IN a historic step towards improving ties, India and Bangladesh exchanged the instruments of ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement on Saturday, promising an end to the 'stateless existence' of more than 50,000 people in 162 enclaves on both sides of the border. Foreign Secretary and his Bangladeshi counterpart, signed the documents and exchanged the modalities for implementing the deal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were present. The deal, signed in 1974, entered the process of implementation after Parliament ratified it in May. The two countries signed 22 agreements and Memorandums of Understanding on economic cooperation, trade and investment, security, infrastructure development, education, science and technology, IT and culture. It is a good beginning and give more leeway for India - Bangladesh business deals going in a big way in the near future. — S. Abhishek Ramaswamy, Kharghar

THE Government of India had done well to direct the Army to launch its attack in Myanmar and the PM Narendra Modi has shown

Chaos over Kumbh mela AS per a press report, a number of members from some rationalist and anti-superstition organizations in Maharashtra have strongly objected to the state-funding of the ensuing Kumbh Mela to be held in Nashik. However, being devoutly wedded to the sacrosanct principle of secularism, these ladies and gentlemen have taken extreme care about not uttering a single word about the subsidy running into a million dollars, granted every year by the Central govt, for those Indian Muslims who undertake annual Haj pilgrimage to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. What is more, this practice has been the been in force right from the dawn of the independence. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

Manipur slaughter MY heart goes out to the families of the 20 brave jawans, who were slaughtered by insurgents in an ambush in Manipur recently. The centre should do its utmost to tackle the growing unrest in the North East. Drug smuggling which is rampant in the state should be arrested as it funds terrorist activities. We should also man our porus international borders with vigour, and equip our military with the latest weaponry as senior army personnel point out that we could have avoided the casualties if we had modern military vehicles. Lastly let us work jointly with friendly neighbours to find and destroy training camps of the insurgents. God bless

India and Bangladesh signed 22 agreements and MoUs on economic cooperation, trade and investment, security, etc his poignance in showcasing the strike prowess of the Indian Army, which was desperately expected from the PM by the well-meaning public who were aware of the qualities of Modi as a CM in Gujarat. WITH due respect to legend politician and the former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee who has been given award of Bangladesh Liberation war by the Bangladesh government during the visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi does not sound right and is politically motivated. I strongly feel that the award given to former PM Vajpayee has no value today as the facts stand that he did nothing as the Jana Sangh member of parliament in liberating Bangladesh which became free independent country in 1971 with the blessing and courageous action of former Indian prime minister and the iron lady Indira Gandhi and army chief Gen Sam Manekshaw who destroy the Pakistan and liberated Bangladesh when Atal Behari Vajpayee was not existence. Victoria will be missed MUMBAI witnessed horse drawn carriages, famously known as Victoria going rounds in Mumbai and other tourist spots and attracted the locals as well the tourists in a very big way is going to be missed on the roads soon. The Bombay High Court directed the BMC to seize the horses which pull carriages in the city and are kept at unlicensed stables. This means, the Victoria, which ply at Apollo Bunder,

Victoria Baggi Marine Drive and Nariman Point, and are a major tourist attraction, will be phased out. Currently, there are 130 Victoria, down from 800 over the years. The main reason for the reported withdrawal is due to the major concern of NGOs and other animal loving people that it is one way of cruelty to animals. There are 170 horses, including ponies, mostly used at beaches, gardens etc. The court has also directed the Maharashtra government to work out a policy to rehabilitate the Victoria 107 registered drivers. As per BMC records, there are 10 horse stables in the city, of which nine are illegal. — CKS Ramani, Vashi

Missing files syndrome THIS has reference to you cover story 'CM flat quota scam' (ADC Jun 10). Our government offices seem to be infected with an insidious virus named MFS (Missing Files Syndrome) that rears its ugly head every time politicians, bureaucrats or their relatives are accused of corruption. All documents that may provide any evidence of wrongdoing do a disappearing act. It may seem ridiculous that in 2015, paper files are still being used, or that archives have not been digitised, but there is a method to the madness. Digital files can be stored in different locations and are usually backed up on a central server. Hence it is that much more difficult to "lose" them. Paper files on the other hand can be 'accidentally' destroyed, or lost in a fire, or simply vanish without trace. And since hardly anybody is seriously interested in uncovering corruption (many of them have their hands in the till anyway), the system works very well. Meanwhile all the public can do is shake their heads and look on in bemusement. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

KEEPING in mind the increasing number of road accidents, especially the deaths due to head injuries, Madras High court's decision to make helmets mandatory from July 1 is a welcome move. Travel company, ex-employee engaged in legal battle over data theft, unpaid dues By A Staff Reporter

I

n an interesting case of an ex-employee allegedly demanding ransom from his employers, a known criminologist has sent a complaint to the Goregoan police station representing Shree Sati Travels Pvt. Ltd against one of their own ex-employees Prabhakar Bhandari for allegedly threatening and extorting money. According to the complaint, which is also now being parallelly investigated by known criminologist Snehil Dhall, “The travel agency in the name Shree Sati Travels Pvt. Ltd. had hired Prabhakar Bhandari to head the accounts department about 20 years ago he and was working since then with the company. After few years of work, the Managing Directors of the travel firm, Ashish Balkrishan Gupta allowed Prabhakar to recruit his wife Sarita and nephew Raghavindra Bhandari in the accounts department. However, they were removed from work within few years by Prabhakar only

as he was heading the accounts department. The company use to provide salary only to Prabhakar under pay-roll and assignment based fees to the other two on occasional project requirement basis. As part of company policy, the employees got many perks and bonuses, however suddenly Prabhakar demanded Rs. 20 lakh which Gupta refused immediately. The complaint further added, “The entire controversy started when as part of the Head of Accounts department, Prabhakar started blackmailing the company for misusing the data he possessed over 20 years of job tenure. The theft of following Intellectual property was confirmed by Gupta's i.e. Company Books-ofAccounts, Banking and Taxation details, Cliental Database, Business Trading Strategies and Secrets, two Hard-disk having personal information of the Gupta family and many more. Since the company had National and International cliental database which was at extremely high risk, the Guptas

negotiated and paid Rs 8lakh of cash. Although the cash was given, the Guptas made sure of having Prabhakars signed acknowledgement about the amount. The family members who werent even part of the company then were stated in the cash receipt hand-written by Prabhakar himself. Speaking to ADC, criminologist Snehil Dhall said, “Even after accepting money on behalf of all three Bhandari members, Prabhakar continued to conduct the alleged white-collar blackmailing and released the data to Service Tax for which the company had to pay a penalty and the matter was resolved. Later, Prabhakar started sending legal notices with contained confidential data of Shree Sati Travel Pvt. Ltd. which stopped only after I intervened. The legal notices send to Gupta had unusual financial demands by Prabhakar that stated Rs. 7.5 lakh payable as 'gratuity amount', Rs. 15 lakh lump sum amount to 'continue the work' and an additional unknown 'service amount'. The three types of cash was demanded on an official legal notice which also had confidential details of Gupta's client. The notices also indirectly denied of having any relationship between Prabhakar, Raghavindra and Sarita. While I replied them with technical arguments, Prabhakars ap-

proached politicians which was also decoded later and police still hasn't taken any action against Bhandari family. So, in my complaint to the police, I have sought that Prabhakar should be arrested under MCOCA for carrying a racket along with his family members for blackmailing with highly confidential data. It is quite possible that such employees are responsible in selling the financial data to the market that leads to organized crime, duplication of identity, money laundering and many other crimes. We don't have any evident of Prabhakar selling the financial data of worldwide clients but the situation cannot be overruled. An officer at the Goregoan police station, he said, “We had received the complaint few months ago and we are still investigating it. Speaking to the ADC, Prabhakar said that the travel company has been in fraud business everywhere and has complaints pending with several agencies. “Rs.1 crore is still payable and there is a scam for India Life Insurance and Mazagaon dock. When I had received the complaint letter from the criminologist, I had written back to him as well as the Commissioner of Police to appraise my facts in this matter. He hasn't paid me and my wife for services that we rendered for years, Prabhakar said.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 2015

Good things come in small packages, but sometimes, they just can’t find the right clothes! Being petite is great, but it’s often difficult to find the perfect outfit, or a pair of jeans that fits just right, whether you’re too short or thin. The Women’s World Team got together to bring you a style guide and asked a few petite women for useful tips

W

hen we say that being tiny comes with benefits, we’re not kidding. From fitting into small spaces and slipping out of awkward situations unnoticed, to being complimented and showered with attention, we love being petite! But, then there are limitations like not being able to reach objects on high shelves and having your view at a concert blocked by someone tall. But, we can all agree that not being able to find the right fit when it comes to clothing is one of the biggest disadvantages. While several brands have separate collections for plus-sized women, petite women have to settle for altered or customised options, or clothing for children! We spoke to a few women about what they do to appear taller and also bring you a few clothing options.

>> Petite women often have to settle for illfitted clothes because attire for their body type isn’t available

WHAT DOES PETITE MEAN? For most of us, petite is synonymous with being tiny and you aren’t wrong — petite is used to refer to those who are shorter than 5 ft 3 (or 4)”. Finding the perfect fit is usually a problem for petite women, because if you’ve got broad hips, you may find a pair of jeans that hug your waist, but they will be too long! Drawing up a standard size for those with petite body frames is not only difficult, but also often inaccurate — just because you’re short doesn’t mean that you’re thin. You could be petite but still have large hips or broad shoulders. But, for the most part, fashion brands classify sizes 4 and 6 as those for petite frames. Remember that petite women can be curvy as well — Kylie Minogue (pictured here), for example, is 5-foot nothing, but the petite star is definitely not skinny. Even within the petite body type, you will find different body shapes. These include the hourglass, triangle, inverted triangle and rectangle body types, which depend on your bust and hip measurements. Our next section will help you find out what your type is.

What’s your body type? Only three figures are used to determine your body type and set the tone for your entire wardrobe. But, are the Continued on pg 14 «

Personal hacks Following stylist or designer tips can sometimes be difficult. So, we asked a few petite women about the personal hacks they use to look slightly taller. “I always wear ankle-length jeans; if the jeans are not ankle length then I fold them. I use small bags, such as sling bags or clutches, and never sport oversized bags , as they make me look shorter. Go for big bags only when you wear heels. When I tie my hair up in a bun or give it a little bump at the crown, it works seamlessly to create the illusion of being taller.” — Afreen Khan, Dombivli “I am 5 ft 1” and I wear dark colours on top and lighter shades for the bottom. Rather than sporting flowing clothes, I wear clothes which fit my body, while ensuring comfort. I avoid horizontal stripes and close necklines as I end up looking stocky in them.” — Anokhi Dasgupta, Dehradun

Continued from pg 13 « measurements of only your bust, waist and hips enough to help you figure out your body type? (Oprah adds another — your shoulders.) While the method is somewhat reliable, it has its limitations, which are more pronounced for petite women. Since they are short, slight variations in measurements can lead to completely different body types, and in turn, vastly different clothes styles. Here’s how you can estimate your body type based on these simple measurements. straIght Also known as the rectangular body shape or the ruler, your bust and hips are about the same size, while your waist is slightly smaller. Pear-shaPed Women who are pear shaped have hips that are larger than their bust, with their waist sloping out to their hips. Kim Kardashian, at just 5 ft 2”, is the perfect example of this type. Inverted trIangle An inverted-triangle body has smaller hips and an undefined waist. But, what’s really different is that your bust is larger in proportion to the rest of your body. hourglass The most sought-after figure, an hourglass body has a bust and hips that are almost the same size, with a thinner, more well-defined waist.

oval/ round Women with an oval-shaped figure have waists that are larger than their bust and hips as well as broad shoulders. If you’ve calculated your body type, but most clothes still don’t seem to fit, you needn’t worry. Designer Amy Billimoria tells us, “Wearing clothing according to your body type is predominantly the right way to dress up and rest assured that you will look good. However, once you’ve narrowed it down, you can always customise your clothing. There are several designers who make clothes according to the client’s specifications and their style, colour and print preferences.”

What desIgners suggest If your aim is to appear taller, Amy has a few more tricks up her sleeve. She says, “A number of petite women find their clothes in the 12 to 14-year-olds section. As a given, these styles don’t suit their age. Pick co-ordinates instead, and mix and match your wardrobe. Use colour blocking and go for smaller prints. When it comes to stripes, remember that vertical lines will project a taller appearance. Optical illusion dressing is the key to this size dressing.” She also suggest making your legs look longer by wearing short crop tops, short skirts and short dresses. Eshaa Amiin, celebrity fashion stylist, suggests you pick scoop necks and V-neck tops that will elongate your neck. “Avoid oversized handbags; carry smaller handbags instead. Oversized handbags make you appear smaller,” she tells us.

What to Wear romPer love If you can’t find jumpsuits in your size, simply pick up a fun romper like this one by Miss Bennet, available on Jabong.com. Price `600

“Jackets and shrugs work well with any outfit, whether it’s a dress or jeans with tees. I don’t wear an outfit that divides my body into half, since it makes my legs look short. Wearing colourful, bright tops with dark jeans or trousers draws attention to my torso and I love long earrings because they make my neck look longer. Confidence is the best tool! No matter what you wear, just put a smile on your face.” — Deborah Fernandes, Wadala “Your sense of dressing plays an important role in how tall or short you look. I wear clothes that fit me perfectly, and I prefer wearing vertical stripes and sport mini dresses often. I avoid long, maxi dresses, oversized dresses and flared jeans. Short girls shouldn’t be afraid of trying new trends and experimenting to see what works for them.” — Jinal Dave, Walkeshwar

Whether you enjoy taking solo trips or you’re searching for a luxury holiday, look to The Backpacker Co. and The Villa Escape for the perfect travel experience. Yamini Walia speaks with founders Yogi & Suchna Shah, to find out what the tours are really about

W

ho doesn’t love to travel and explore new places? Travelling to new locales makes for the perfect escape and it’s also a great way to learn about new places, cultures and, most importantly, people. So, when you have the opportunity to do that through packaged tours, it’s bound to pique your curiosity. With The Villa Escape and The Backpacker Co., you can travel solo if you prefer, or create memorable experiences in a group. Read on to find out more about them.

>> The colourful scenes that you will come across can easily rival those of major tourist attractions

n What does travel mean to you?

Travel cannot be defined as simply visiting a place. You haven’t travelled if you haven’t experienced a place in its entirety. We swear by this notion at The Backpacker Co. n Tell us about the concept behind The Villa Escape and The

Backpacker Co.? The Backpacker Co. is an endeavour to expose Indian travellers to the true beauty of travelling. The modern day traveller lives life in the fast lane and is constantly seeking ways to escape this reality, traverse the globe and indulge in soulful experiences. This is where backpacking comes in. The Backpacker Co. team helps create experiences that break away from the concept of packaged tours. We believe in taking the road less travelled and stumbling upon hidden gems along the way! While freestyle travelling is turning into a cult of sorts, we also understand that it may not appeal to all travellers. For those who seek leisure travel, The Villa Escape takes you to a picturesque world of experiences that are defined by lush villas and bed-and-breakfast arrangements across surreal destinations in Europe. n What inspired you to start these ventures?

Suchna and I both love to travel and we thought, what better way to combine business with pleasure than to start a travel venture! We plan each holiday as though it were our own and that’s what sets us apart. The Backpacker Co. (TBC) was our first travel venture. We realised that there was a need for a company that helped people plan a freestyle holiday while staying at fabulous hostels on a budget. We love experiencing a destination like a local and that is exactly the way we plan holidays at TBC. The Villa Escape (TVE) was conceptualised when we saw a gap in the market for leisurely holidays. These are holidays to destinations such as Croatia, Iceland and Lapland. TVE is for people who have seen major cities of the world and want to experience something more. We are also holiday curators and villa concierges, where we plan off-beat holidays for our clients.

TBC) and leisurely travel (for TVE). With TBC, we are one of the biggest groups that head to Oktoberfest, and we want to focus on bringing such experiences to Indians who want to travel abroad. For TVE, we are looking at planning more trips to catch sights like the northern lights and we want to add several such off-beat experiences to our bouquet. n What makes The Villa Escape different from other

travel groups? There’s a whole brand of leisure travel that appeals to an older bracket of travellers. It ranges from picturesque scenes in Finland to sailing holidays in Croatia. The Villa Escape brings this very experience to life by striking the perfect balance between experiential travel and luxury indulgences. These getaways mimic villas at hotels or bedand-breakfasts at exotic locations.

n Do share some of your travel experiences with us!

We have been fortunate enough to travel extensively and the journey itself has been an experience. But, we loved zipping on skidoos (a kind of snow mobile) at 100km/ hour over frozen rivers with a wind-chill of -20oC on our faces. We also loved our stay on a lovely sailboat off the warm waters of Dubrovnik in Croatia and diving into the sea the first thing in the morning. Battling the freezing conditions whilst we swam in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland was also a treat. And, there is no better joy than eating a three-Euro sandwich from a hole-in-the-wall place in Florence. n What’s next for both your ventures?

Travel is no longer a luxury, but is now a necessity for many, and you’ll see that India witnesses more outbound travellers than any other country every year. We see the travel market breaking into multiple niches and we aim to be the leaders in our travel niche, which is backpacking (for

n Have you had any interesting experiences with customers?

There is one instance that stands out for us. After his return from an Oktoberfest getaway that we arranged, one traveller made it an annual ritual to attend the Bavarian celebration, with a detour to Europe on each trip. Such was his first experience! This was a proud moment for us!

detours, flexibility and off-beat travel escapades, and is backed by a team of experts who are avid globetrotters themselves. They are all about local experiences, travel hacks and tips that you won’t find in a guide book. Where the usual travel packages can be limiting — keeping you from exploring a place the way you’d like to — backpacking lets you customise your travel plan as per your personality, your quirks and your travel sensibilities. n What kind of audience are you targeting with The

Backpacker Co.? The Backpacker Co. has no filter. We believe that all you need to really experience a place is an open heart. We aren’t averse to the growing trend of people embracing the concept of both solo and soul travel. The modern traveller has to let go his inhibitions and be independent and spontaneous! We hope to inspire people, show them the world through our eyes and empower them to take on their travel inspirations with a little guidance from us. Our backpacking trips usually attract a greater number of youngsters, but we’ve also had an older bracket of people who’ve backpacked with a little help from us. n Are customers really open to travelling alone?

n The Backpacker Co. comprises of an experienced

women-only team. What are the advantages of having such a team? We love that our team is a talented mix of yoga instructors, ballroom dancers and bakers. The one thing they have in common is wanderlust! They bring in a passion that reflects in the experiences we create. Girl power all the way! n What sets The Backpacker Co. apart from others?

The Backpacker Co. is all about spontaneity, impromptu

The thing we like to reinforce at TBC is that even if you travel alone, you are never lonely. Conversations with locals and travellers from other countries always keep you company. Since our inception, we’ve seen a tremendous rise of travellers embracing the idea of travelling solo — especially women. We go the extra mile to ensure their safety in terms of hostels, their location and more, without compromising on the experience. The response has been overwhelming and we love the confident vibe from our clients after their holidays.

It’s been established that septum piercings (piercing the cartilage wall that divides your two nostrils) are in the limelight, and celebrities ranging from Lady Gaga to Jessica Biel and Rihanna have sported it! Pooja Salvi asked a few girls what they think never, ever! Insiyah Periera (18-yearsold), says that she is against the very idea of getting her septum pierced. “It is a punk concept and my personal style statement is a little girly. Also, it looks a little odd to me.”

it’s a no-no Sameera Kelkar (20-yearsold), says no too. According to her, septum piercings can be a little uncomfortable. “They don’t look comfortable. I like ear piercings, but not any other kind of piercing. It’s not that I am concerned about what people will think. But, there are people who judge you based on how you look. So, it is a no for me.”

We’ve been following Julia Roberts ever since we first saw her on screen. The Pretty Woman actress oozes grace, and her charismatic personality, along with the way she presents herself, has made her one of our favourite style icons. Yamini Walia shows you how to imitate her style elegant charm

ulia Roberts has a more laidback, subdued style than most A-listers. She uses basic colours such as black and blue, and only occasionally throws in heady hues that help her alabaster skin and fiery hair stand out. But, that doesn’t mean that her style is boring. In fact, it’s so elegant that we can barely take our eyes off her. While she keeps things minimal, everything from her hair to her makeup, spells class. here’s how you can mimic her style.

cOlOrBar Black fiesta nail lacquer

I’ve used so many top coats in the past that I now only pick those that dry quickly. While Colorbar’s latest Black Fiesta Nail Lacquer doesn’t quite make the cut, it looked so attractive that I couldn’t resist trying it. The reason it stands out is because it’s matte, not glossy, which means that your nails are coated with shine that’s not too garish. For those like me, who can’t pick between colours and would prefer a splatter to match any outfit, Masquerade is a great option. It’s a fun splash of glitter that’s not over-the-top, so you can wear it without looking like an over-eager teenager. The almost transparent shade has flecks of dancing colour that I loved, but it’s a little over-priced. However, since it lasts for weeks, especially if you use it as a top coat over another, darker colour, it’s not such a bad buy for those who can afford it! rating *** Price `499 Where Available at any Colorbar Exclusive Store or leading beauty outlets across the city

Humidity, pollution and rain — Mumbai is not conducive to keeping your lipstick on through the day. So, we’re excited every time there’s a new one that promises to stay on for hours on end. Colorbar’s is touted as an eighthour lipstick, and I was determined to see if it did the hours justice. The packaging is definitive of the silver Colorbar tubes, this one slightly glossier and heavier than most, sealing its more premium status. The range is wider than most other super-stay lipsticks, which I appreciated. But, what I really fell in love with was the actual texture of the lipstick. It’s matte, but it doesn’t dry out your lips. The creamy, soft lipstick coats your lips completely —and since I suffer from the dreaded cracked lipstick look quite often, this was a real relief for me. It feels smooth through the day and the Light Coral shade I tried was bursting with colour, but not over-the-top orange. Apart from the very high price tag, it’s easily one of the best go-to, super-stay lipsticks that we’ve tried in a while. rating ***** Price `900 Where Available at any Colorbar Exclusive Store or leading beauty outlets across the city

If there is anyone who has mastered the art of casual dressing, it’s Deepika. She knows how to keep her look sleek and stylish, without going overboard. Sporting just a casual top and ripped denims, she adds a hint of sexiness to her look with those beautiful stiletto pumps. Her makeup and hair are both effortless, and we couldn’t point out a single flaw with this look.

We’re aware that Shraddha likes to take a few risks when it comes to her style, and there really isn’t anything risky about this outfit. But, that tank top is simply hideous. And tucking it in isn’t really helping either. If rock-chic is what Shraddha was going for, then we think she’s going to have to do better than this.

anushka sharma

We’ve been loving Anushka’s style lately and we think that she is truly emerging as a fashionista. We love that boho-chic top and layered necklaces. Her gorgeous, shiny do and peachy makeup make her look stunning. We only wish that she had ditched the wide-legged pants. But then, a girl’s allowed to make some mistakes, right?

Priyanka chOPra

If you’ve already watched her latest film, Dil Dhadakne Do, you would agree that Priyanka has never looked better. But we don’t quite understand what’s going on with those pants. It seems as though they’ve been pulled right out from a teenager’s wardrobe. We do, however, love the rest of her look. Just look at that stunning lilac blazer! Not to mention, her hair and makeup are spot on.

taaPsee Pannu

Can we take a moment to appreciate the glow on Taapsee’s face? We love the colour of that top and the gold detailing on it. And, although a bit strange, it looks quite stylish on her. But, we wish that she had done something a little more fun with her hair — perhaps a sleek blowout or a loose, messy braid.

Don’t speak!

Whether you like it or not, your boss is going to judge how you converse just as much as how good you are at your job. So, it’s important to avoid making statements that could make you look unprofessional. Dev Goswami tells you about a few

E

ven if the environment in your office is more or less casual or you’re close to your seniors at work, there’s a line that you should not cross when you’re speaking with them. From blurting out the wrong things and challenging the briefs you’re given, to being stuck in an embarrassing situation where you’ve misjudged the tone of a conversation, there are some things that really shouldn’t be part of your regular work day. We can’t help you with the things that you blurt out, but we can give you some guidelines on the subject and target a few common mistakes to help you avoid saying the wrong thing at work.

You say: “Sorry, it’s that time of the month for me.” Your boss is thinking: “So?” While we would all love to work in an office that lets us stay in bed when we need to deal with nasty menstrual cramps, we also understand that it’s not always practically possible. You aren’t the only woman at the company and, even if you’re feeling under the weather, it’s not an excuse that you can use as a get-out-of-jail-free card to justify your irritable behaviour. Your bosses will forgive shoddy work as long as it doesn’t become a habit, but they won’t forgive you for trying to justify it with silly excuses. If you really are having trouble working to the best of your ability, simply say that you’re unwell and leave it at that. You say: “I don’t agree; we should change it.” Your boss is thinking: “And I don’t agree with the amount of money you’re being paid!” Your personal views would matter if you were part of a television debate, but at the office, the company’s views come first. Why? It’s pretty simple. They pay you to do the work that is expected of the company and not the work that you are personally comfortable doing. Of course, this doesn’t refer to actual projects that you may be working on — providing suggestions about the best way that an assignment can be completed is part of your job. But, refusing to work on a project because the subject is at odds with your beliefs will fast-track your name up the list of employees who will eventually be replaced. As long as your company isn’t asking you to do anything immoral or illegal, it’s only professional that you learn how to keep your personal apprehensions and work-related views separate.

One of my seniors at work is always asking me to do things that stray from my job description. Some are work-related but often they are nothing to do with the job! Sometimes she dumps extra work on me that I should not be doing in the first place, but is part of the team’s work. I think this is unfair. At other times, her requests are bizarre. She’s asked me to pick up a coffee for her in between a work day too! How do I make it clear that I wasn’t hired to run such errands? — akanksha menon, borivali (w)

dear akanksha, This is something that you must nip in the bud. If you don’t, she will continue to walk all over you. Whatever kind of work relationship you have, it’s

You say: “I don’t like him so I don’t want to work with him.” Your boss is thinking: “Does it look like I care?” Alright, most bosses will not actually respond so aggressively, However, they will be thinking it! Unless the person in question is a creep whose behaviour makes you feel uncomfortable, you are expected to put your personal differences aside when you’re working together. Keep your interactions formal and over email if you have to, but don’t tell your boss that you won’t work with a colleague simply because you don’t like them. If it’s a safety issue, be upfront with your boss about your colleague’s behaviour. You say: “I’ll quit!” Your boss is thinking: “Good riddance!” You really don’t want to use your position as a playing card with someone who is actually in a position to fire you. We can’t think of a single situation where this would work out well for you. Even if your boss doesn’t fire you immediately, you can expect to be given the dullest assignments and the worst year-end reviews when you say it. If you feel the need to provide your boss an ultimatum, it should be well-thought out and as nonantagonising as it can be — but that’s a topic for another story.

« stuff we like

« career advice

ThaT iSn’T mY job!

You say: “This isn’t my job.” Your boss is thinking: “It is now!” When you say something like this, you not only come across as an employee who is not willing to give it her all, but also as someone who thinks that her boss doesn’t know how to delegate. Even if it doesn’t seem like it, your boss always knows what work you’re doing. Even if you think they are adding to your workload, they are doing so consciously and often, for good reason. Your seniors may be adding to your responsibilities because they think you can handle it or they trust you with the work. But, when you say that this is not what you were hired to do, they will have second thoughts; not only about their opinion of you, but also about whether hiring you was the right choice. If you really think that the extra tasks are going to make your workload unbearable, work on the new assignment first, and then tell your boss that it’s becoming difficult for you to manage all your responsibilities.

best to tell her gently that you’ve got a lot of work on your plate and that doing these things will only delay important work, for which you may have tight deadlines. Try asking her if she’s okay with you finding someone else to do her work. That way, she won’t feel like you’re being rude or dismissive. If it’s work related however, make sure that it’s not in your job description before complaining about it. Teams sometimes have to spread out particular tasks that may not be immediately related to their job profile but which have to be done. Unless she is targeting you specifically or shirking her own responsibilities, avoid being a whiner. As for the other things — unless you’re her secretary or assistant, she has to find someone else to get her coffee!

>> You should teach your children from a young age how to handle money

AllowAnce 101 Allotting allowances can be tricky — you may be giving your children too much, or too little. Sara Shah & Pooja Salvi speak to a few mothers to find out what they think. They also give you a few tips to follow before handing over the money

T

eaching your children how to save and value money can be tough. Discussions regarding pocket money can cause parental debates, and often even arguments at home. Children often end up comparing how much money they get with the allowance that their friends get. Then there are factors such as weekly outings or occasional indulgences, which can see you loosening your purse strings pretty often. So, how much is too much — and, what’s too little?! We asked a few mothers how they navigate the pocket money issue and we also have a few tips that will make allotting pocket money an easier task.

What Mothers think Be proactive “I think that parents are a little too laidback about pocket money. In fact, pocket money is a virtually non-existent concept here. Parents simply buy their children whatever they want, whenever they want it, and children grow up with zero knowledge of money management. I wouldn’t say that I was very particular about allowances myself, but I think it’s vital that your children know how much their parents can afford to give them. If you go to great lengths just to give your children the best of everything, without letting them know whether or not you can afford it, they will never learn to stop asking for more and will grow up with a distorted view of money management. If you think your children don’t need more than you’re giving them, make sure that you let them know,” Rehana Shah (51), mother of three, tells us.

teach your kids how to manage money “I started giving my daughter pocket money when she was around six-years-old to buy a little something for herself at her school canteen. When she began college, we gave her a debit card and put her monthly allowance in the bank. She had to make do with that amount. It’s important for

children to learn how to manage their money, and it is all the more important for us as parents to start with this at an early age. Children need to be taught about how much it costs to have a decent standard of living and learn accordingly. As a parent, you should not be stingy. If you can afford it, make sure you give your child enough to last a month. I think once my daughter gets a job and becomes self-sufficient, I will stop giving her a monthly allowance,” says 48-year-old Purnima Mahambre.

set a strict budget “My son is smart when it comes to money management. He knows that at times his friends take undue advantage when they see money in his wallet. So, he asks me not to give him a monthly allowance, but a daily one instead. My daughter’s spending habits, on the other hand, are a bit extravagant and I make sure she doesn’t go overboard. She is still young, so she has the time to learn. Even though I give both my children a daily allowance, I make sure they don’t exceed the limit. They have to live on a budget and they should understand that well,” says Neetal Shelar (40).

a place to save If you’re just going to hand over a sum of money to your children and expect them to save it, don’t be so sure that they will. Your child needs a place to store money, which also acts as a form of motivation to save. If your children are as young as five-years-old, then invest in a piggy bank that is big enough to store just about enough. As they get older, you can open a bank account for them and encourage them to deposit all their savings there. Several banks allow children as young as eight-years-old to open an account that they can operate independently once they reach adulthood.

help them out

hoW to aLLot PoCket MoneY

You don’t need to be too strict about pocket money. As we mentioned earlier, you can leave room for a little flexibility. In the process of saving and spending, children are bound to make mistakes, so avoid punishing them every time they make one. Help them out occasionally, especially when they need something, by adding a little more to their savings. This ensures that your children don’t resort to borrowing money from other children. Also, educate them about the obligations and repercussions of debt.

Fix an amount

Monitor spending habits

The amount of money you give your child as allowance should be set in accordance with their age. The ideal age to start giving your child pocket money is seven-years-old, but if you think that your child can handle money, feel free to start earlier. As your child grows older, you can increase the amount, but make sure that you stick to the number you’ve decided on. You can leave room for flexibility, but only for exceptions that can’t be avoided. Talk to other parents to get a general idea of how much your child should be given. This will help avoid peer pressure. But, remember to think about what your own budget is before fixing the amount. Lead by example!

By monitoring, we mean that you should see to it that they don’t run out of money before the month ends. If they like something and want to buy it, reason with them and ask them if it is really necessary. Then, let them decide accordingly.

Don’t pay for errands We’re all guilty of making this mistake. Avoid rewarding your children with money for errands that they are supposed to be doing in the first place. If your child is willingly partaking in chores, it is his duty and not something that needs to be rewarded.

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

My daughter has been in America for the last one year doing a post graduate diploma. I have missed her so much each and every day! So when she said she was coming back for holidays instead of touring America as she had previously planned... I was a little surprised but so very happy! Oh, mummy! You have no idea how much I missed you! I missed you so much!

I

n the beginning of your relationship, you were a cosy, canoodling couple who couldn’t get enough of one another. Whether you were friends before you began to date or became friends after you fell in love, one thing is for sure — your partner is your best friend. While it’s good to share this equation, dig a little deeper into your schedule with your new man. Have all your intimate dates turned into drinking sessions with a group of mutual friends? Have you so seamlessly integrated into each other’s lives that you’re in and out of each other’s homes all through the week? Are you so comfortable lounging around with your partner that you don’t even remember when you last paid each other a compliment? And when you talk, are you more agony aunt than girlfriend? Whether it’s because you’re dating your best friend or a carbon copy of yourself who talks, thinks and behaves exactly like you, it’s time you get that spark back! Because while being best friends with your man is great, it’s not enough. You may have found someone who thinks like you and is always on the same page. But, if you’re looking for a long-term lover, that dwindling spark is going to create problems. Don’t panic though; there are several ways to fix this! Read on to find out about a few.

She looked tired and had lost a lot of weight... So the next day, for lunch I made her favourite! Paneer and peas! With extra thick gravy!

Aww! Mum! You don’t have to cook for me! I got myself a salad when I was out earlier!

Back to the beginning

I didn’t know she had gone out even! She usually tells me... And her saying ‘You don’t have to cook for me’... I felt, well, a bit hurt. She must have known I would. And she bought only a salad for herself... Then, as soon as I was going to take the first bite of our first meal together in ages, she began...

Hover over the memory of your first date. Remember dressing up for him? You don’t have to spend all day wondering which dress he would prefer, but it’s a good idea to recreate the magic. Don what he gifted you last anniversary or simply pick his favourites from your closet. Take him back to where it all started!

Mum, you really need to start watching what you eat...

Stay surprised! You may not be the mushy kind, but even guys love to feel special. Expensive gifts are not always necessary, just make him something he likes! Try baking his favourite cake,or leave a sweet note in his shirt pocket if you live together. Even something like putting on a game and watching it with him is enough!

Subtle public displays

>> Get to know each other better instead of whining about your day

Public displays of affection is frowned upon. So don’t go canoodling on a promenade. But, you can hold his hand while crossing the road or link arms while watching a movie together. Little things count!

Conversations matter

Dress up a little

Instead of having long, dry conversations about work or spending all your time discussing finances, keep your conversations light and flirty once in a while. Spend time together talking about personal things, share intimate secrets and flirt a little.

Avoid falling into the lazy trap of ordering in or sitting at the bar with some nibbles. Don’t always hang out with friends either. Treat him to a great evening with your company at least once a week. Head to a cosy, pocket-sized nook and nestle at a table with more privacy than usual.

« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, My boyfriend and I argue a lot and most of the time, we reach an impasse and then have nothing more to say to each other. While this hurts me, I can’t back down during the argument, and defend myself fervently, which adds fuel to the fire. I know that my boyfriend doesn’t like this either and I can tell that it upsets him. Is there any way to resolve our arguments better so that we don’t end up being so frustrated with each other? — Nikita D’Mello, Matunga Dear Nikita, When you argue, try and keep your cool; don’t get lost in the argument. Both of you should do this. If, after doing this, both of you are still unwilling to back down, you can agree to disagree. You may both be stubborn! Try not to blame each other when you argue and focus instead on what you are arguing about, rather than resort to namecalling. Using this technique will help you see the other person’s perspective and help to remove bad blood.

Tell her that you promise to take care of yourself (and mean it) and try to find out how she is doing. All doesn't sound well. b) Tell her to remember who she is talking to! That you fed her growing up! Nothing like a nice shouting to bring back balance to the relationship. c) She has been independent for a year. Your relationship has in fact changed. Don’t focus on food/ babying her... find other ways to connect! LAST WEEK: Pamela should pick option C: Tell Gaurav what you think of Gaspar now. All is not well with rural economy believe experts... By A Business Reporter

C

ar sales in India grew for the seventh month in a row in May with a jump of 7.73% as the auto industry stayed in the slow lane on the path to recovery. Declining motorcycle sales remained a cause of worry. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic passenger car sales in May this year stood at 1,60,067 units against 1,48,577 units in the yearago month. "Currently, we are in a slow recovery mode, with some segments showing growth and some declining. Even those segments like cars, which have shown growth, haven't reached peak levels," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters here. He said falling sales of motorcycles and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) showed that not all is well

with the rural economy. Motorcycle sales last month slid 3.04% to 9,53,322 units, from 9,83,210 units in May last year, while those of LCVs were down 7.19% at 28,226 units against 30,414 units a year ago. "For LCVs, barring an increase in September 2014, the segment has been witnessing decline for the past 25 months," Mathur said. But he struck an optimistic tone, saying that with consumer sentiment improving, demand in the car segment is likely to gain traction as banks start to pass on rate cut benefits to consumers. In May, market leader Maruti Suzuki India saw its sales grow 14.29% to 85,190 units against 74,536 units in the year-ago period. Likewise, Hyundai Motor India posted a growth of 3.8% at 37,328 units compared with 35,955 units in May last year. Honda Cars India, however, had a decline of 8.78% at 12,134 units against 13,303 units a year ago. In the case of Tata Motors, sales rose 32.37% to 9,176 units against 6,932 units in the same month last year while those of

Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 4.77% at 16,980 units compared with 17,831 units last year. Mathur said the auto industry is hopeful of a better monsoon this year based on forecast by SkyMet, which SIAM tracks. In May, total vehicle sales across categories registered a decline of 0.58% to 16,83,962 units, from 16,93,740 units in May 2014, SIAM said. According to SIAM, total two-wheeler sales in May declined 1.25% to 13,80,950 units mainly due to a dip in motorcycle sales and also moderation in sales of scooters. During the month, motorcycle market leader Hero MotoCorp saw its sales decline by 3.04% to 5,09,427 units as against 5,25,449 units in May last year. Rival Bajaj Auto also saw its bike sales drop by 3.18% to 1,70,668 units compared with 1,76,277 units in the corresponding month last year, while that of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) also declined by 9.53% to 1,38,150 units as against 1,52,714 units in May 2014.

‘Maggi Controversy Stepping Stone For Packaged Food Industry’ By A Business Reporter he Maggi controversy is likely to be a stepping stone in the evolution of country's packaged and processed food industry, which could result in better labeling, packaging and testing norms for the entire sector, a Nomura report said. "We see the entire controversy as a stepping stone in the evolution of India's packaged and processed food industry," Manish Jain and Anup Sudhendranath of Nomura said in a research note, adding similar tests are likely to be conducted on other similar products and companies.

glutamate (MSG). While Maggi's brand equity has more than likely been dented from a near to medium-term perspective, Nomura believes the company is taking all the right actions and will rebound strongly from the same. "We strongly believe that Nestle India will rebound with a revamped product and packaging, which will slowly rebuild the brand equity," Nomura said and added that some other bigger brands of the company like infant nutrition portfolio and coffee business are likely to remain "insulated". In October 2003, Cadbury brand was marred by a controversy when

According to the Japanese financial services firm, the next logical step for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) would be to tighten the labeling, packaging and testing norms for the entire sector, which in turn is positive for the consumer. "This is a positive from the consumer's perspective and would help expedite the migration from the unorganised to the organised sector," Nomura said. Maggi brand has been under the regulatory scanner due to allegations that the product contains higher than permissible levels of lead and traces of monosodium

worms were found in their chocolates. However, recovery for the chocolate giant started by late 2004 and by June 2014, things were back to normal, Nomura said. Another such incident was the coke pesticide issue. In 2006, the Centre for Science and Environment alleged that Coca Cola and Pepsi were among a dozen soft drinks that contained high levels of pesticides and insecticides. However, as was the case with Cadbury, the giants emerged strongly from the controversy with sales of the brand doubling between 2008-14 at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 17%, Nomura added.

tepping up action against illicit fund-raising in a big way, Sebi has cracked down on nearly 200 such activities in last one year relating to fraud against gullible investors and recovered Rs 25 crore. These cases included deemed public issues and illicit Collective Investment Schemes (CIS). Sebi has passed close to 200 orders in last one year against illegal fund-raising activities and barred individuals and companies from mobilising money from public. Besides, the capital markets regulator has passed orders for recovery of money from them and been able to collect about Rs 25 crore. The Se-

curities Laws Amendment Act, which was notified by the government in August 2014, empowers Sebi to pass orders for attachment of properties, arrest of defaulters and to access call data records. A majority of orders against deemed public issues were in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The same for CIS activities are in TN, MP, Maharashtra, UP and West Bengal. These firms were running CIS without obtaining registration from Sebi and had raked in unauthorised funds promising high returns to investors. A large number of the schemes were also carried out under the garb of real estate business. Besides, several other firms and individuals raised public money by issuance of securities such as

Ek Laqshya is an army based show but interestingly Gaurav’s character Kuldeep is the only one who isn’t a part of it and after hearing his character, his dad had a hearty laugh. “Well, I come from an army background, my dad was an army officer and everyone wanted me also to join army. I never wanted to join it, so when I got this show I was like finally life came to a full circle. But when I went for the script reading, I was told that mine is the only character in the show who isn’t an army officer. I went home and told my dad and he burst out laughing and said that I so strongly didn’t want to be one in real life that I didn’t get to play the role in reel life also,” he said.

Isn’t this the second silent comedy show on SAB TV? SAB TV was the first and only channel to successfully produce silent comedies in India like 'Gutur Gu', which was very successful. With Rumm Pumm Po, SAB has some plan to take the silent comedy genre a step further by offering a romantic twist to the concept. SAB's new offering is sure to catch the eye of comedy lovers out there. SAB has worked with Deepti Bhatnagar Productions for a silent comedy in the past too and are looking forward to another successful season with them. What’s your character in the show? I play Piyu, Rani’s mother in law.

MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTER

The search for television’s Karna is finally over! After considering some of the biggest names in the television industry, the handsome Aditya Redij has been roped in to play the title role in Sony Entertainment Television’s upcoming period drama, Suryaputra Karna! And the long search ended with Aditya confirming the same Aditya Redij said, “I am completely thrilled to play the role of Karna on screen. This is the first time I am doing a mythological show and I am looking forward to start shooting the show. I always wanted to do a period drama but I never thought I would get such an opportunity to play such a great role so early in my career. I have already started training for the role..”

What made you accept this show? It’s different and a Deepti Bhatnagar Productions show and that too on a niche comedy channel like SAB TV. Deepti is one producer, who is always trying out new concepts like a travel show or a realistic tale on the Malegaon cinema based TV shows and it's a great pleasure to work with her and I am sure that I will enjoy working with the show. How many episodes are we looking at? We have an initial sanction of 26 episodes and we will take it from there based on the popularity of the show.

Why is it positioned like a weekend show? So that families and children can watch it. This is one show that won't do the 'talking'!

Kamal returns to Bollywood as actor-director

TAMIL superstar Kamal Haasan is all set to make a return to Hindi cinema as a director and actor with political drama Amar Hai, for which Saif Ali Khan has been approached to play the lead role. Penned by Haasan, Amar Hai revolves around political intrigue, finance and underworld. The action thriller is being produced by Virendra K Arora and Arjun N Kapoor. It is a dream film for Haasan, who has been scripting the film from past six years and is keen to collaborate with Saif, who has already been clued in about his involvement on the mega project. Two actresses are set to join the ensemble cast. "My character though not that of a conventional antagonist, would present a point of view that is far from ordinary," the 60-year-old star said of his role. The Vishwaroopam star's last Hindi directorial venture was criticallyacclaimed Hey Ram in 2000, though he acted in a Bollywood film Mumbai Xpress in 2005. The producers said they were excited to work with Haasan, who has an enviable profile as an actor, director, writer and producer with hits like Nayagan, Sadma, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Saagar, Moondram Pirai, Virumaandi, Dasavathaaram, Pushpaka Vimana, Apoorva Raagangal and Chachi 420.

CTOR Varun Dhawan, who has been finalised for 'Shuddhi', has rubbished rumours about the film being based on author Amish Tripathi's debut book 'Immortals of Meluha'. "There are a lot of things that are new in this film ('Shuddhi') . There is a rumour that it is based on Meluha ... Shiva and all that... But is not true... The film is on a completely different subject," Varun told PTI. Earlier, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan were supposed to star in the movie but later Salman Khan was roped in. But Karan Johar last month announced that he has finalised Varun and Alia Bhatt for the lead pair in the film, which will be directed by Karan Malhotra of 'Agneepath' fame. "With 'Shuddhi' lot

CTRESS Jacqueline Fernandez says her 'Kick' co-star Salman Khan has helped her a lot professionally. Jacqueline, 29, who is reportedly no more a part of the 2014 hit film's sequel, said she would be fine if she does not get to share screen space again with the superstar.

When asked about the sequel, Jacqueline said, "I am not aware about it. I am okay with it if that is the case (not being part of 'Kick' sequel). "'Kick' has been one of the best experiences I have had in my life. Salman has already done a lot for me. If I am not getting to work with Salman in 'Kick 2', then some other film." Meanwhile, Jacqueline is excited about her upcoming film 'Brothers', where she essays the role of a young mother. "It's an honour to be part of a project like this where I get to work with Akshay (Kumar), Jackie (Shroff ) and Sidharth (Malhotra). It was a challenge as it's not an ordinary situation as I am playing a young mother...," she said. "Brothers" is an upcoming actiondrama film, directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar. The film is an official remake of the 2011 Hollywood film 'Warrior'. The film is scheduled to release on August 14.

Dhawan hammers a century in his comeback test as the opening pair pile on a steady 239 runs

[Clockwise] Shikhar Dhawan plays a shot during the first day of their test match against Bangladesh in Fatullah, Bangladesh on Wednesday. Rain stopped play after the weather remained gloomy all morning during the match. Shikhar Dhawan celebrates with Murali Vijay after scoring a hundred against Bangladesh.

F

ATULLAH: Shikhar Dhawan hammered a listless Bangladesh bowling attack into submission with a scintillating century as India seized the initiative on a rain-hit opening day, reaching 239 for no loss in the one-off cricket

Test. Making full use of the opportunity that he got due to Sydney Test centurion KL Rahul's illness, Dhawan dominated the proceedings from the start during his cracking unbeaten innings of 150 off 158 balls comprising 21 delectable boundaries. He was ably complemented by Murali Vijay, who played a contrasting undefeated innings of 89 off 178 balls as the duo were hardly troubled during the 56 overs bowled in the day which vindicated Virat Kohli's decision to bat first after winning the toss. This is also the second time that the Dhawan-Vijay combination posted a double century partnership after their 289-run stand in Mohali

Brief Scores: India 1st Innings: 239/0 in 56 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 150 batting, Murali Vijay 89 batting) vs Bangladesh. back in 2013. The duo showed positive intent sending the home team bowlers on a leatherhunt -- something that Kohli had promised after taking over the mantle from Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With a slow and flat track on offer, it was an onerous task for Bangladesh's spin quartet of left-arm spinners. Shakib Al Hasan (0/34 in 9 overs), Taijul Islam (0/55 in 12 overs) along with leg-spinner Jubair Hossain (0/41 in 7 overs) and off-break bowler

India to tour Zimbabwe next month H arare: Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has confirmed that the Indian team will tour the country to play three Oneday Internationals and two Twenty20s in July. The Indian team will arrive in the Zimbabwean capital on July 7. ZC managing director Alistair Campbell said yesterday that the respective boards had already agreed on the schedule for the tour which should be released this week. "I can confirm that it's now a done deal. India are arriving on July 7 and will

leave on the 20th after playing three ODIs and two T20s," Campbell told 'NewsDay Sport'. The former captain added: "The schedule for the matches is almost done and should be released later this week. However, I can confirm that all the India matches will be played in Harare." India last toured Zimbabwe in July 2013 and comfortably won the five-match ODI series 5-0. India's visit to Zimbabwe follows the ongoing tour of Bangladesh.

Shuvagata Hom (0/47 in 13 overs) failed to stop the Indian openers who faced little difficulty in negotiating the pedestrian attack. The only chink in Dhawan's century was just before the rain interruption in the 24th over, when he got a reprieve when Shuvagata dropped a relatively easy catch at short mid- wicket off left-arm spinner Taijul's bowling. The southpaw was on 73 at that time. After nearly four hours of

rain delay, when play finally resumed, Dhawan started from where he had left off before the break. He found the gaps on the off-side with ease to get into the 80's as Vijay completed his 50 with a boundary off Shahid. An inside out cover driven boundary off Taijul took Dhawan into 90's. After a couple of anxious overs, Dhawan swept Jubair Hossain to bring up his third Test hundred. Vijay on the other hand, started slowly as barely

reached double figures by the time Dhawan had completed his 50. But he picked up as time progressed playing some lovely drives on the up and used his feet to good effect against the spinners. His composure at the other end was exactly what Dhawan needed to carry on playing his natural game. The home team's decision to play with four specialist spinners and a single seamer backfired badly as Dhawan toyed with the bowling.

We are backing our bowlers to do the job: Ashwin

Fatullah: Backing the team's decision of picking five bowlers on what looks to be a good batting track, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that the bowling department will certainly use their Australian experience on placid Bangladesh wickets in the ongoing one-off Test here. Ashwin said the Indian bowlers will certainly do better than their Bangladeshi counterparts when their time comes. "I think it's an individual perception, they probably saw the wicket in a way they wanted to see it and we are seeing it in a different way. We have got bowlers who can exploit with 140 kmph plus, if there is a bit of reverse swing," Ashwin said at the press conference after the opening day's play. "It's also about how the bowlers are bowling. Our bowlers have been pretty good and they have learnt a lot over the last months in Australia. We are backing ourselves and we are looking to play the best possible bowlers we have. I think every side does that, play the best possible bowlers they have," he added. With weather already threatening to play spoilsport after four hours of play was lost and only 56 overs possible on Day 1, Ashwin said India will try their best to control the "controllable".

Buttler ton sets up record England victory B

irmingham: Jos Buttler's 129 and a hundred from Joe Root helped England to a record 210-run win over New Zealand in the first one-day international at Edgbaston as they launched their 'new era' of limited overs cricket in style. It was England's biggest victory, in terms of runs, in all ODI cricket beating their 202-run margin against India at Lord's way back during the inaugural 1975 World Cup. England's total of 408 for

nine, their highest in all ODI cricket, was built on the back of hundreds by wicket-keeper Buttler and Joe Root (104). It surpassed the 391 for four that England made against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2005 -- the previous highest in any ODI in England. Chris Jordan is congratulated by Jos Butler and Alex Hales after bowling New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan caught Alex Hales during the ODayI match.

Buttler's stand of 177 with Adil Rashid (69) was also a new seventh-wicket record in all one-day internationals, topping the 130 shared by Zimbabwe's Andy Flower and Heath Streak against England in Harare in 2001. England dismissed World Cup finalists New Zealand for 198 with more than 18 overs to spare, fast bowler Steven Finn (four for 35) and legspinner Rashid (four for 55) doing the bulk of the damage.

UMBAI: Former Maharashtra stumper Hemant Kanitkar, who had a 15-year first class career but played in only two Tests as a batsman in the home series against Clive Lloyd's West Indies in 1974-75, passed away in Pune at his residence Tuesday night. The Amravati (Maharashtra)born wicket-keeper batsman was 72 and is survived by his wife and two sons – Hrishikesh, also a former India cricketer – and Aditya, according to Maharashtra Cricket Association sources. whose first class career commenced in 1963, but coincided with those of other wicket keeper batsmen like Farokh Engineer, Budhi Kunderan and Inderjit Sinh to deny him an early shot at an India berth, batted at no. 3 in the opening Test of the series against Lloyd's West Indians at Bangalore and made 65. Subsequent scores of 18, 8 and 20 in his next three innings that included the second Test at Delhi, where too Engineer kept wickets, confined him to the list of forgotten men of Indian cricket as far as the national selectors were concerned.

But Kanitkar kept playing for Maharashtra till 1978. In his first class career spanning a decade and a half Kanitkar amassed 5,007 runs at an impressive average of 42.79 with 13 centuries and 87 dismissals. In Ranji Trophy for his side Maharashtra he aggregated 3,632 runs at an average of 43.75, with a career-high score of 250 against Rajasthan in 1970-71. Another Pune-based former India batting stalwart and exchief selector, Chandu Borde, expressed his sadness to PTI at the passing away of his former teammate. "He played under me for

"On behalf of the BCCI, I would like to extend my condolences to his family, and pray that his soul rests in peace," said president Jagmohan Dalmiya. UMBAI: Hiraai Suns clinched the boy’s under-19 crown in the inaugural edition of the Colaba Super League (CSL), conducted under auspices of the MDFA and supported by Aadhar Pratishthan. Dishing out a consistent performance, Hiraai Suns brushed aside a strong, spirited challenge from Brainy World by registering a hardearned 1-0 victory in the grand finale, at the Back Garden’s Ground, Colaba. The hero of Hiraai’s triumph was striker Aniket Wydame who netted the crucial winning goal late in the summit clash. The final, witnessed a keen contest for supremacy as both the teams adopted a positive attacking approach and tried their best to get an early breakthrough. But the defence of both the teams were compact and that made it difficult for the attackers to find the net during the first half and for most of the second period. Hiraar Suns managed to break the deadlock when Aniket against the run of play found the net for the all-important goal, which they dearly held on to emerge champions. Stung by that setback, Brainy World came up with a late charge and went all out in search of the equaliser, but all their efforts went in vain as the neutralising goal proved elusive. Meanwhile, it was a grand double for Hiraai Suns as their women team had lifted the CSL Women’s crown last month. Results – Boy’s under-19 (final): Hiraai Suns 1 (Aniket Wydame) beat Brainy World 0. MLWB’s Owais Shaikh and Somnath Sonawane were in control in the opening game of the deciding doubles when Bombay Gymkhana’s formidable pair of Gautam Ashra and Jimmy Master initiated a late burst before narrowly losing 19-21. Ashra and Master made amends by snatching the second game 21-15 with fewer blemishes before squandering a substantial lead in the neck-and-neck decider which allowed the gallant MLWB pair to close in and take away the game and match at 21-19. The Oman football team undergoing training session ahead of Worldcup Preliminaries in Bengaluru.

B

ENGALURU: Star striker Sunil Chhetri conceded that Oman are a better side than his team but asserted that the Indians will play without any pressure when they take on Oman in their AFC qualification match for the 2018 FIFA World Cup here today. Responding to a query about India's chances against Oman, Chhetri said, "Let us be very clear in our minds, that we are playing a very good side. Oman are a better side than us. We need to give our best, and have to be positive and make the rivals realise we are giving them a fight." "We have young players and they have a clean mind, which is not under pressure or any kind of tension - tension spriniging from past track record against rivals like Oman. This should work to our advantage," he said at the match-eve press conference.

Asked about the army training which the entire team and support staff underwent at the Army Corps Centre here, Chhetri said the exercise brought the players together but it was not something which would do wonders for the team overnight. "The training was good which brought us together, but it is not something that

has been highlighted by the media as a game-changer. It is not something that it will make Ninjas out of this exercise," he said. Indian footballers had undergone army training as a new concept in team building exercise, which happened at the Army Service Corps Centre (ASC) where footballers were put through obstacle courses consisting of 21 different barriers and also team building recreational games. Chhetri said it bothered him on not having a great season in terms of scoring goals in good numbers. “To be honest it bothers me (of not having scored too many goals), if you see my stats this season," he said. Chhetri has not been among goals as he scored just 11 from 28 matches he played this season so far. The biggest disappointment was his below par goal-scoring performance

in the I-League where he played 20 games and scored twice only. Oman coach Paul Le Guen said his players were confident of doing well in today's match but would ignore India's progress in the last couple of years. "At this level, we cannot ignore any team. India has been progressing well in the last two years and I don't see any reason why they will not play well. We need to play to our strengths," he told reporters on the eve of the match to be played at Sree Kanteerava Stadium here. "Apart from playing against Australia, South Korea and Kuwait in the Asian Cup, we also have played friendlies against Algeria, Bahrain and Syria. These matches have given my boys a lot of confidence for the qualifiers," he added. Le Guen, who guided Oman to qualification for the AFC Asian Cup in Australia this year, said his side have been working hard and putting in good preparations. "We have had a very good time in preparing the team. In football, winning is important. It's not going to be easy. We have been working hard," Le Guen said. Le Guen said his team has young and inexperienced players but they were willing to work hard. "The boys are young and probably lacking in experience, but they are willing to work hard. We have Iran, India and Turkmenistan in the group and no team will be easy," said the experienced French coach who led Cameroon to the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa.

ENGALURU: An acid test awaits the Indian football team as it gets ready to host higher-ranked Oman in the second round opening match of AFC qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Though India have made progress under Englishman Stephen Constantine, beating Nepal in a two-legged preliminary qualifier in March, the chief coach knows it's going to require an extraordinary effort to emerge with a victory against Oman who, at 101, are ranked 40 places higher than the hosts in the pecking order. The side will be led by Arnab Mondal and not Subrata Paul, Constantine said on the eve of the match. The Indians have been training with renewed vigour for these matches. Last Saturday, Constantine put the team through a boot camp organised by the Indian Army on the ASC campus here. It was a team-building exercise, meant to help push the side

over the line. In the four meetings against Oman so far, India have conceded 11 goals while winning just one fixture, losing two and drawing one. The last time the two teams clashed was in Muscat in February 2012 when Oman won the friendly 5-1. The visitors would be keen to repeat the win while India would be drawing some confidence from their 2-0 and 0-0 results against Nepal in the first round. The match at the Kanteerva Stadium is a chance for Oman to erase the bad memories of narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Instead of the usual practice of choosing the experienced players, Constantine has pinned lot of hopes on young brigade, which is reflected in the 26 probables he picked, including the likes of Jackichand Singh, C K Vineeth, Dhanpal Ganesh and Sehnaj Singh.

ANTIAGO: Argentina are favourites to end a 22year trophy drought when the Copa America kicks off here Thursday as a resurgent Brazil chase redemption following their ill-fated campaign at last year's World Cup. One of the most eagerly anticipated Copas in years gets under way in Santiago, with hosts Chile launching the three-week extravaganza of South American football against Ecuador in Group A at 8.30pm (2330 GMT). The 12-team tournament is a convention of football's deadliest attacking talents, with a galaxy of Europe-based stars including Lionel Messi, Neymar, James Rodriguez, Alexis Sanchez and Edinson Cavani set to shine. The competition also comes as a welcome relief to South America's governing body CONMEBOL, which has been battered by corruption allegations in the ongoing scandal which has rocked world football. Argentina captain Messi and Brazilian counterpart Neymar head to Chile less than a week after inspiring Barcelona to their Champions League triumph in Berlin on Saturday, the final act of a glittering treble-winning season. Jack Warner blasts US, FIFA suspect turns self in

PORT OF SPAIN: Fallen FIFA executive Jack Warner has said that US authorities would be unable to give him a fair trial, while an Argentinian businessman indicted in the soccer body's sprawling corruption scandal handed himself over to Italian police. Warner, a former schoolteacher and Trinidadian ex-minister of national security at the heart of the criminal case engulfing football's world body, is the subject of a US request to have

him extradited from Trinidad. The 72year-old said the United States is not the "appropriate jurisdiction" to handle the matter "fairly" and claimed America is trying to exact revenge because it tried but failed to lobby FIFA to host the 2022 World Cup. "One must be extremely careful to question whether the United States can be fair in taking action against officials of an international body whom it feels has done it wrong," Warner wrote in an editorial

in the weekly Sunshine newspaper, which he owns. Currently, US prosecutors accuse 14 people of taking part in a sweeping kickbacks scheme going back 20 years involving a total of USD 150 million in bribes. The revelations have thrown the soccer world into turmoil and led to the resignation of long-serving FIFA president Sepp Blatter last week, just four days after his re-election to a fifth consecutive term.

force in club football over the past decade, he has yet to taste victory in an Argentina shirt, a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics aside. "Our aim is to win this year," said Messi, who fell agonizingly short of ending Argentina's jinx in an extra-time defeat to Germany in last year's World Cup final. "It's great to play with the national team, to wear the shirt and to be captain," Messi added. "But getting a title would be the ultimate for me." Messi may feel he has a point to prove, four years after being jeered by his home fans during Argentina's quarterfinal exit to eventual winners Uruguay. Argentina open their campaign against Paraguay on Saturday, and should comfortably progress from a Group B which also includes Uruguay and Jamaica, one of two teams from the CONCACAF region invited to bolster the tournament. The biggest threat to Argentina's hopes of topping the group is likely to come from defending champions Uruguay, who are bullish about their chances despite the absence of suspended talisman Luis Suarez. The holders will instead look to Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani to provide the cutting edge in attack.
