fter the state Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) had intensified its operation against government officers and servants who were demanding bribes to do civilian work, the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory is facing a major problem of providing reports of tape authentication and speaker identification on time, due to shortage of staff. Around 1,500 cases of the ACB are pending in this laboratory. While there are 6,127 pending cases only from Mumbai city, the number of pending cases across Maharashtra is 10,065. Viscera tests pertaining to the death of three students of Virarbased school whose bodies were found in a river and unsolved case of brutal rape of a six-year-old in Kandivali are going to be delayed further causing glitches in the investigation, as the short staffed Kalina FSL is presently functioning with negligible staff. Last month, following the direction of the Election Commission, 225 of the 261 staff members of Kalina FSL were sent for election duty. The remaining 36, some of whom are grade III and grade IV staff, are now handling 6,127 pending cases only from Mumbai city. The pending cases across Maharashtra amount to 10,065. Talking to ADC, Director of Kalina FSL, M K Malve said: ''Yes, it is true that around 1,500 cases are pending in voice identification department, and all these cases are from the ACB, across the state, but we can't do anything because there are only 8 staffers here instead of over 60. The proposals have been okayed and once the laboratories are opened there, the pressure on the Kalina FSL will reduce. “Only after our initiative, the DNA testing work has began in Pune due to which we get some relief. Governments across India have been cracking the whip on alcohol consumption in the states. Kerala, which earned its highest revenue through alcohol tax, is busy implementing a ban. Now the ladies wing of the BJP in
Goa has demanded that alcometers be installed in executive offices to keep a tab on officers who show up to work under the influence of alcohol. To most people's delight, Mumbai is the cheapest city in the world to live in (who would have thought?!), and Karachi is second cheapest. An intelligent rear end
n the Hollywood biographical sports movie, 'Rush', which is based on the rivalry between two Formula One race car drivers, Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) says that the moment he sits in his car he can sense the stretching of the engine belt, air bubbles in the engine, the strength of the brakes and air pressure in the tyres. “God gave me an okay mind, but a really good ass, which can feel everything in a car,” he proclaims. While it sounded like an exaggerated statement about the use of someone's ass, what changed our minds is a recent incident closer home, where the
motorman of a CST-Panvel local train felt a jerk in the train's movement around Dockyard road station. This local train was carrying around 3,000 passengers, including some railway staffers, but none felt the jerk, except this motorman. He immediately informed the control room about it. After a minute track inspection, railway engineers found a rail fracture of 1 mm which was not visible to the eye, but was sensed by this motorman's intelligent ass. A major tragedy was thus averted, and we were reassured about the intelligence of the human being's rear end.

Union minister for Skill Development Rajiv Pratap Rudy remarked that the BJP had tried to work along with the Sena and still was attempting the same and added that the talks were still on and that a solution will certainly be found. Speaking to newspersons at Shivalaya party office near Mantralaya, Anil Desai stated that they had been waiting for a clarification from the BJP over whether it would seek support of the NCP. He added that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had even told them that once union minister for Power Piyush Goyal came they would send them the list of cabinet portfolios. But that never happened and they were kept waiting. However, BJP sources argued that senior Sena Lok Sabha MP's – Anandrao Adsul, Bhavana Gawli and Chandrakant Khaire had raised the flag of rebellion questioning the leaderships decision to nominate a junior Rajya Sabha MP for the union cabinet berth. This behind the scene development in the Sena was the reason for Sena asking Anil Desai to return back from Delhi without taking part in the swearing-in ceremony.
Sena, which is in majority, is in alliance with the BJP. Reacting to the Sena barbs, state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari stated that the BJP has already clarified that it has not sought support from the NCP and added that it was for the Sena to take the final decision. Meanwhile a senior BJP minister, speaking to newspersons on conditions of anonymity, disclosed that even if the Sena occupies the opposition benches, it will be difficult for it to retain its hold on the 63 constituencies it
has won up to now. The BJP leader pointed out that both the Congress and NCP will look to wrest indirect control over the seats won by the Sena. He even hinted that he had not fully moved into his official residence as yet, indicating that the BJP was prepared to face the worst on November 12. Sources in the BJP disclosed that even the BJP top brass in New Delhi is of the opinion that its minority government in Maharashtra may not last long. The BJP leadership is not taking the NCP's

CP chief Sharad Pawar has the final laugh in the current political scenario in the state. Pawar, whose party has extended crucial outside support to the BJP government, yesterday made it clear that to avoid instability and fresh elections in the state, the party will make a decision as per the situation in the House. At the same time the NCP president also pointed out that the party will play the role of effective opposition. “The decision to back the minority government was conscious and collective, and not part of a hidden deal with the BJP. We have not discussed our decision with anyone. It was a well thought out decision in the larger interest of the state. Nobody asked us for our support. The BJP is free to refuse our offer,” said Pawar, speaking to reporters at the party state headquarters. “Since the Congress and NCP are not in a position to provide an alternative government, the only way to avoid a fresh elections is to back the BJP. I want to make one thing clear that my party does not want the state to go for another election immediately,”

The split between the Sena and BJP was visible on the floor of the legislative assembly with Sena MLA's wearing saffron turbans had occupied the opposition benches. To make matters worse earlier in the morning senior Sena MLC Diwakar Raote and its legislature party leader Eknath Shinde tried to offer a green skull cap to BJP's minister for Minority Affairs Eknath Khadse over the governments decision to

Addressing party cadres yesterday, Sena president Uddhav Thackeray made it clear that the Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly will be the Sena. However at the same time he continued to maintain that he would keep the door open for talks with the BJP in the hope that something can be salvaged, if at all it can be salvaged. He added that this was not to be mistaken as a sign of weakness. Sources disclosed that the Sena has also been trying to explore possibilities of cornering the BJP over the election to the Legislative Assembly Speaker. Sources added that, after being snubbed by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for its overtures, the Sena tried to seek support from the Congress in its bid to wrest the Speaker's post from the BJP. Early in the morning on November 12, the Legislative Assembly will elect the Speaker and in the afternoon the government will seek the trust vote. Sources in the BJP maintained that the survival of the government was not of para-

he Mumbai police on Sunday arrested a 40year-old paedophile tuition teacher for sexually assaulting and recording sexual acts with two teenagers, students of Class 10. Savio Alfred D'Sa was arrested from his home in Parel, said the police, adding that he runs a private tuition class at Merwanji Street in Nirmala Niwas, Parel, and Savio Alfred D'Sa was arrested from his home in Parel. he's unmarried.
According to the police, there are 35 students studying in D'Sa's class. Two of these students complained to their parents about the teacher's acts. The parents then lodged a complaint against D'Sa. D'Sa has been booked under stringent sections 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault), 10 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) and 12 (punishment for sexual assault), of the POSCO Act, as
well as section 377 (unnatural offences) of the IPC. Speaking to the ADC, Sunil Tondwalkar, senior inspector of Bhoiwada police station, said, “D'Sa has been remanded to police custody. We suspect that there might be more such students, who might have been his victims in the past.” The police have begun inquiring with the remaining students who were studying in D'Sa's class, added Tondwalkar.
BMC caught in the middle of BJP-Sena war By A Staff Reporter
E
ven as Shiv Sena and BJP remain locked in a tug of war over the former's support to the new Government in Maharashtra, an air of uncertainty prevails about their ties in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), where the two parties are still allies. As Sena legislators on Monday occupied the opposition benches in the Assembly, at a special three-day session during which Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will seek a trust vote, speculation is rife over the stand the two saffron parties will take vis-a-vis their alliance in the cash rich civic body, which they have been ruling for about two decades. "We are awaiting a decision to be conveyed by our party leadership. Whatever will happen (about alliance), will happen soon," BJP group
leader Manoj Kotak said. He was asked about the future of the Sena-BJP alliance in the BMC, which boasts of an annual budget that is bigger than the budget of some of the small states in the country. "We will not hesitate to sit in the opposition if our leaders wish for it. We cannot allow the Sena to have a free run in the BMC like in the past," said another BJP corporator. A Sena corporator, when asked if the party will forge an alliance with the Raj Thackeray-led MNS and Congress along with smaller parties and Independents, said a decision will be taken once the picture on the state front becomes clearer. "Let us wait till the special session (of the Assembly) gets over. We will have a clearer picture then," he said. Shiv Sena and BJP split just two weeks ahead of the October 15 Assembly polls after they
failed to reach to an understanding on sharing of seats. However the two parties have maintained a stoic silence over their ties in the BMC. According to experts, barring minor tussles now and then, nothing much will change with regards to the functioning of the BMC even if the Sena and BJP go their separate ways. BMC has 227 seats and a party or a coalition requires 115 seats to
‘Drop in temperature will reduce dengue cases’ E
ven as October saw a spurt in the number of dengue cases in Mumbai, the BMC officials yesterday expressed hope that a drop in temperature levels, coupled with the preventive measures, will help reduce the number of cases. According to civic officials, 12 persons have lost their lives so far due to dengue and over 660 cases were reported in Mumbai alone till the first week of November. "We are sure that the number of dengue cases will come down from this week as temperatures have dropped to about 35 degrees from around 40 degrees last month," Suhasini Nagda, director medical education and hospitals in BMC told PTI.
"People have also become aware now and they are now increasingly cooperating with us. Housing societies that were previously not allowing us to come inside are now welcoming us. This helps us do our work better," she said. A dedicated staff of 2,200 civic workers is working 24x7 visiting households and they have covered over 12 lakh houses till the first week of November. "We are making them work overtime so that they can finish off the targets. We are going to construction sites and at offices as these mosquitoes bite during day time. We need to ensure that these places are free from stagnant water and other dirt that makes mosquitoes breed,"
she said. "We have circulated a lot of ads to spread awareness. The breeding spots of these mosquitoes have been found in housing colonies and notices have been sent to them. We clean the breeding spots and visit that place again after a week to make sure that water does not accumulate again," Nagda said. She said "serious preventive steps" are being taken to ensure that the virus does not cause more harm. Blood samples of the patients are being sent to labs in Nair and KEM and the sequencing of the virus is being checked. "We need to see how does the virus strain change, adapt itself, etc...This way we can avoid the virus from causing deaths in future," she said.
prove majority. Currently, the Sena has 75 seats and BJP 31, combined with the support of Independents. As per the power-sharing agreement, Sena holds the Mayor's post and BJP that of Deputy Mayor. The two have also split chairmanship of key committees between themselves. In case the BJP decides to withdraw support in the House, the BMC will continue with business as usual except for some minor hiccups in policy decisions, the experts said. "The Mayor and Deputy Mayor have already been elected. So there is no threat to them for the next two-anda-half years. There can only be a squabble between the BJP and Sena over the different committees of BMC," said Milind Mhaske, Director of Praja Foundation, an NGO. BMC's most powerful body is the Standing Committee, which is controlled by the Sena along with the panel that looks after the affairs of BEST, the civic undertaking for transport and electricity. The BJP heads the Education and Improvement committees. "These committees have elections every year. So both parties will (in case of split) have to work extra hard to woo smaller parties and Independents, which are also part of these committees, for membership," Mhaske said. There may also be a lack of co-ordination between the state government and the BMC, whose five-year term ends in early 2017, over policy decisions, he said. "Both (BMC and state government) will try to be in the good books of people. When you have the same ruling party or coalition at different levels, there is greater co-ordination between them," Mhaske added.

Drunken man follows woman home and locks her in By A Staff Reporter
T
he Vakola police have arrested a 24-year-old man who, who when under the influence of alcohol, followed a woman home on Saturday night, locked her door from outside and allegedly hurled abuses at her. The police say that the incident occurred at around 11.30 pm when Shalini Parekh (35), resident of Anand Nagar in Vakola, went out for a walk after having dinner. The arrested man has been identified as Bhima Vage who lives in the same locality as the victim in Santacruz (E). Parekh alleged in her complaint that she saw a man who appeared drunk and was coming towards her from opposite side when she was walking near her residence after having dinner. The woman claims that
she got scared and started walking towards her home and locked her room from inside said a police officer. Vage, intoxicated with alcohol, was screaming abuses on the road. He then went to the woman’s home and latched her door from outside. He then peeped into her home from the window and started abusing her, added the police officer. Hearing Vage’s cries for help, few neighbours woke up and gathered around, but Vage abused them too. The victim then called a friend who lives in the area and informed the Mumbai police about the ongoing incident. The police patrolling van then arrived on the spot and took the accused to the police station. “Following the statement given by the victim we have arrested Vage under the charge of wrongful confinement,” said an officer.
Lecturer quizzed over radicalising youths A
lecturer of a technical institute at Panvel was yesterday grilled for his suspected role in radicalising youths towards terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a state Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) official said. "The lecturer was today called to the ATS office and questioned for several hours. The lecturer had been grilled earlier too. This time he was summoned over further developments which emerged during the course of ongoing probe," an ATS official told PTI. The principal of the institute had also been asked to
appear before the investigators today, but he did not turn up citing personal reasons. "We will decide about the next date when the principal could appear before us," the official added. About 40 people from Kalyan, Thane and Raigad are under the ATS scanner for allegedly propagating ISIS among youngsters. In May, four youths -- Arif Majeed, Shaheen Tanki, Fahad Shaikh and Aman -from Kalyan had left to visit holy places in the Middle East, but disappeared thereafter.

Students of Kalyan school were made to kneel for 5 hours for not donating towards school building fund By Yatin Ingle
Y
esterday, a shocking incident took place at a school in Kalyan. Some students had not coughed up the school building donation fees. In order to teach the parents a lesson all the concerned students were made to kneel in the premises for five hours. The students went home after the ordeal and were overcome by trauma – they are now terrified to attend the school, with the fear of facing such a punishment again. This issue was brought to light by members of the Janata Party Bharatiya (Kalyan) who took up the issue and reported the matter to the police. On November 7, when students from St Jude's High School returned home, they were found to be depressed and stressed out. Some of then had bruises on their knees too. When the parents asked the students about their traumatized condition, the students informed that they were made to kneel for five hours. When the parents inquired about the reason for punishment, the students stated that the school had punished them because they had not contributed towards funds for the new building planned by the school. These students were from Std VIII C of the school. A parent whose child was punished, on condition of anonymity said, “My child went to the school and as he reached there, the school authorities asked him whether he had brought the donation for the new building and when he said no, he was asked to kneel down. For around five hours my child was on his knees and has been suffering immense pain. He also does not want to attend school. This is ridiculous and the school authorities should be punished. The education department should take severe action against the school.” As per RTE norms, a student should not be punished physically or emotionally and if a teacher is found punishing a student, the state education department is liable to take severe action against the teacher and the institution. Ragesh Pillai, BJP, Kalyan, said, “We got the information
of this incident and found that the school authorities had ignored the parents. So we, from the BJP, took the parents to the police station and informed the police about the incident. This is a very horrifying act by the school to loot the students. This school should be punished severely for torturing the students just to loot money from them.” Since last three months, incidents of schools or teachers severely punishing the students have been going on. Last month in Vashi, a Std III student was brutally bashed by the teacher for not completing his homework. Whereas, another student from Std II was made to stand in the sun for more than three hours as she was mischievous in the class. The ADC spoke to B.Mane, Education Inspector, who said, “This issue will be taken up as soon as the inquiry is carried out by the police. Once the police report is ready, action will be taken against the school.”

Ponder awhile... “Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto.” — Thomas Jefferson
No chance of P alliance again A
T last, the inevitable has happened. Any chance of the BJP and Shiv Sena coming together again is off. The Shiv Sena has decided to sit in the Opposition. Its demand for the post of the Speaker was totally unacceptable to the BJP. A Speaker from a party without the required majority is never the done thing. The Shiv Sena’s demands were rejected one by one by the BJP. The Shiv Sena, BJP traditional relations for 25 years has ended. Was there some overconfidence on the part of Uddhav Thackeray? Before the polls, he was dead certain, the Shiv Sena would emerge as the largest party and form the government. The BJP had never fared well in Maharashtra. If he was fair in seat-sharing — before the poll — the story would have been different today. He offered only 119 seats to the BJP and kept for his own party 151 seats. This was unacceptable to the BJP. Uddhav Thackeray underestimated the strength and popularity of the BJP. He underestimated the popularity of Narendra Modi. He had declared on the eve of the polls there was no Modi wave. He was totally wrong. When the results came, he must have got the surprise of his life. He should have tried to make the best of a bad situation. He did not do that. Instead he began to call the shots — like a big chief. Finally, it can be said Uddhav Thackeray could not make it because he chose to turn a blind eye to reality.
ANDIT Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel are the two icons of the freedom movement. One was left of the centre and the other right of the centre but they sank their ideological differences to win freedom. After Independence, the Nehurvian thoughts came to influence the country because he was the most popular leader and his thoughts fitted into the general sentiment of pluralism in the country. Naturally, the name of Sardar Patel receded. Prime Minster Narendra Modi has refurbished the past and brought Patel’s name to the fore by celebrating his birthday as 'Rashtriya Ekta Divas'. It, however, goes to the credit of Modi that unlike his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) he has not devalued the role which Nehru played in freeing and building of the country. The BJP has not mentioned in its manifesto Nehru among the freedom fighters and builders of the nation.

their heads held high that they were equal partners, even though they were fewer in numbers. Once India was divided on the basis of religion, the Hindus would tell the Muslims that you had taken their share and should, therefore, go to Pakistan. Even after 67 years of division, this approach has not been disowned either in India or Pakistan. The latter, Pakistan has ousted practically all Hindus. However, the Muslims in India continue to be a target of fanatics. When there is a tension between the two countries, many Hindus refer to Muslims as Pakistanis. Little purpose will be served in pursuing this point because the wounds of Partition are far from healed and the people
Hypothetical possibility There are people who believe that India’s interests would have been served better if Sardar Patel, in place of Jawaharlal Nehru, had been the country’s Prime Minister. This hypothetical possibility had been voiced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Gujarat chief minister. Of all the leaders, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Nehru’s guide and philosopher, came to the same conclusion after watching Nehru as an administrator. Azad was in Nehru’s cabinet and saw him from close quarters. Azad told his secretary, Humayun Kabir, that they should have made Nehru the country’s president and Patel its prime minister. By no stretch of imagination, Azad can be linked with Patel or his philosophy. During the national struggle, both ardent participants, were poles apart and made no secret of their stance. Patel was pro-Hindu, but strictly adhered to pluralism. Azad was secular through and through and boldly faced the charge of 'Hindu show boy' that the Muslim League made against him. He did not flinch even for a second to say publicly that the formation of Pakistan would be harmful to the interest of Muslims. He would say before Partition that the Muslims could walk proudly in the country with
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar in both the communities continue to be exploited in the name of religion. Left to Patel, he would have had an exchange of population before accepting Partition. Nehru was different. He did not mix religion with politics or the state. The distance in separation in their approach made Mahatma Gandhi, who led the war of Independence, to nominate Nehru as his successor. The Hindu-Muslim unity was a matter of faith with Gandhiji, not part of the policy. Gandhiji and Patel came from the same state, Gujarat, ate the same food and represented the traditions of the state in many ways. Yet Gandhiji preferred Nehru to Patel. Gandhiji knew that Nehru even dreamt in English and that he was too much engrossed in world affairs. But Gandhiji also knew that Nehru would interpret his philosophy of Hindu-Muslim unity more faithfully and employ such methods to implement it that respected scruples

S love a thing of the mind? Actually, for most of us, it is. Do not say it is not - it is nonsense to say that. Do not deny the fact that your love is a thing of the mind. Surely it is, is it not? Otherwise, you would not possess, you would not dominate, you would not say, "It is mine." But when possession is disturbed, you begin to think, and then you say, "I love that person." So your love is merely a reaction of the mind, is it not? - which means your love is merely a sensation, and sensation is surely not love. Do you think about the person when you are close to him, sirs and ladies? When you possess, hold, dominate, control, when you can say, "She is mine" or "He is mine," there is no problem. As long as you are certain in your possession, there is no problem, is there? And society, everything you have built around you, helps you to possess so as not to be disturbed, so as not to think about it. Thinking comes when you are disturbed - and you are bound to be disturbed as long as your thinking is what you call "love." Surely, love is not a thing of the mind, and because the things of the mind have filled our hearts, we
have no love. The things of the mind are jealousy, envy, ambition, the desire to be somebody, to achieve success. These things of the mind fill your hearts, and then you say you love, but how can you love when you have all these confusing elements in you? When there is smoke, how can there be a pure flame? Love is not a thing of the mind, and love is the only solution to our problems. Love is not of the mind, and the man who has accumulated money or knowledge can never know love be-
MATTER & SPIRIT cause he lives with the things of the mind; his activities are of the mind, and whatever he touches he makes into a problem, a confusion, a misery. We bind ourselves to another, not
and were non-violent and fair. The typical example is that of Travancore. It announced its independence and initiated the process of seceding. Vallabbhai Patel had a man in khaki when he went to the Travancore maharaja. He signed the instrument of accession. He explained subsequently that he did not want his family to suffer and spend years in jail. Gandhiji was also confident that his secular ideals would be safer in the hands of Nehru. This was proved when Patel refused to release Rs.64 crore to Pakistan. This sum was part of assets which India had agreed to transfer while agreeing to the Partition details. Patel argued that how could he release the money when India and Pakistan was engaged in a war over Kashmir. Gandhiji had to go on fast unto death to make Patel relent. The extremist Hindus had vitiated the atmosphere of amity over the sum of Rs.64 crore. Society was sought to be polarized. They criticized Gandhiji again and again for being anti-national and anti-Hindu. The RSS, the fallout of Hindu Mahasabha’s philosophy of Hindutva, hatched a conspiracy and shot Gandhiji dead.
Banning the RSS Patel was quite right in banning the RSS and blaming it for disturbing the atmosphere of secularism. Once again the slant of Patel towards the RSS made him withdraw the ban once the organization changed its character to become a cultural organization. This was only a smokescreen behind which the RSS used the BJP for its political activities. Modi is its candidate. In fact, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has openly said that the outfit would be participating in politics. Nehru had exposed the duplicity of the RSS. When Azad thought Nehru’s suitability for the office of President, he was confident that the communal forces had been crushed. He commended Patel’s quality of being pragmatic and practical. Azad had come to have full faith in Patel’s secular aptitude. That Modi is using Patel’s image for polarizing the society is unfortunate. Practical as Patel was, he would have understood that India’s destiny lay in a democratic, secular polity. He, as prime minister, would have deepened its foundation more firmly than Nehru. through fusion, but through contract, which is called love, marriage. Love does not fuse, adjust - it is neither personal nor impersonal; it is a state of being. The man who desires to fuse with something greater, to unite himself with another, is avoiding misery, confusion; but the mind is still in separation, which is disintegration. Love knows neither fusion nor diffusion; it is neither personal nor impersonal; it is a state of being which the mind cannot find. It is only when the mind is quiet that it shall know love, and that state of quietness is not a thing to be cultivated. Cultivation is still the action of the mind; discipline is still a product of the mind, and a mind that is disciplined, controlled, subjugated, a mind that is resisting, explaining, cannot know love. Only when you put away the things of the mind, only when your hearts are empty of the things of the mind, is there love. Then you will know what it is to love without separation, without distance, without time, without fear and that is not reserved to the few. Love knows no hierarchy; there is only love. There are the many and the one, an exclusiveness, only when you do not love. When you love, there is neither the 'you' nor the 'me'; in that state there is only a flame without smoke. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

BJP has the remote control PRIME Minister Narendra Modi has pulled off an adept balancing act in his first cabinet reshuffle since his big election victory of May 2014. It's a much needed facelift in a government so far excessively dependent on two or three individuals who were overburdened with ministries. The induction of Manohar Parikkar and Suresh Prabhu is an excellent move, signalling that Modi believes in rewarding competence and proven track records in administration and governance and is moving to address the relative lack of intellectual bench strength in the existing cabinet. That Harvardeducated Jayant Sinha has been inducted shows that the government is keenly aware that with the Union budget just five months away, Arun Jaitley will need as much support as he can get from reform-minded individuals. At the same time, Modi has also made some compromises with electoral politics, distributing portfolios to those who are important for caste and regional reasons given the election schedule ahead. Bihar goes to polls in 2015 and new inductees Giriraj Singh and Ramkripal Yadav are potential challengers to Nitish. The BJP also has its eye on Bengal and debutante Asansol MP Babul Supriyo finds space as a minister. Clearly despite his desire for 'minimum government and maximum governance', Modi has made concessions to the demands of Parliamentary politics. Dushyant Singh, son of Vasundhara Raje, continues to be left out. Instead the clamour for greater representation from Rajasthan, given its showing in the general elections for BJP, has been answered by the induction of Olympic silver medalist Rajyavardhan Rathore. The overall character of this reshuffle bears the impri-

THE PM has opted for Cabinet expansion in the run up to the Parliamentary winter session. A notable change is the induction of Manohar Parrikar (former Goa CM) as the new Defence Minister which portfolio was being held by Arun Jaitley. Also, Sadananda Gowda is shifted from the Ministry of Railways which has been given to Suresh Prabhu who has quit the Shiv Sena to join the BJP. At this stage, one cannot resist the temptation but to recall Modi's frequent pre-poll specific address not very long ago in the media that his vision was minimum government, maximum governance. This expansion certainly is seen as running counter to his vision. The proliferation of ministers is set to drain the hard earned tax-payers' money which could otherwise have been better utilised towards

SHIV Sena should join hands with the BJP without any conditions and give Maharashtra a stable government. Shiv Sena-BJP have been old allies who have been married for over 25 years and a small tiff over three seats which resulted into their breakup should not lead to a divorce and both partners should end their rivalry and strengthen their partnership in the days to come. Time for Uddhav Thackeray and PM Modi to talk directly without intermediaries so that decisions on cludes JDU leaders Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav, Samajwadi party leader Mulayamsingh Yadav and CM Akhilesh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav and all others who were actually not short of enemies so far are joining hands just for one common interest and that is to defeat Modi and the BJP in the subsequent elections. It is actually a difficult proposition as they lack in positivity the results they have shown so far during their tenure as ruling party. Surely their mission may be one but the approaches to win cannot match, their mindsets and cultures are different and just cannot match Modi's positivity and ambition to raise the status of not only India but of all the states which is incomparable and seems to be invincible today. It appears that Modi speaks from heart and has actual feelings for society or people at large full of not only progressive thoughts or ideas but also knows how to to put a foot forward to implement those. — Mina Bhattacharyya, via email

APROPOS your cover story 'Has BJP taken Uddhav for a ride?' (ADC, Nov 10), Thackeray is fighting a losing battle. Narendra Modi is a master tactician the like of which the country has not seen since Indira Gandhi; and Uddhav is no match for him. Bal Thackeray perhaps could have gone head to head with Modi and extracted substantial concessions from him for the Shiv Sena, but Uddhav is definitely not his father. All he has done is manoeuvre himself into an untenable position. Uddhav may be sincere when he declares that he is not hungry for power, but that sentiment is not shared by the majority of his party men. In our country, power is associated with financial rewards and very few politicians are principled enough to resist that temptation. If Uddhav does decide to sit in the opposition, he can expect a lot of defections from his party, with members scurrying to join the BJP, who will receive them with open arms. Remember that in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, out of the 122 seats won by the BJP, a full 35 seats were won by recent defectors from the Congress, NCP and other parties. The Shiv Sena may receive a blow from which it may never fully recover. With Raj Thackeray's MNS already reduced to a nary people and so are expected to do extraordinary work. MANOHAR Parrikar is the next Defence minister. The defence portfolio was with Arun Jaitely since May and Modi preferred to diversify portfolios and free the Finance Minister from additional charge. Outgoing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's giant leap to Delhi as India's next Defence minister has upended the hierarchy in the Modi government. He is straightaway being catapulted to a de facto No 3 rank at the Centre. Apart from Parrikar, several other senior and junior ministers are expected to take the oath of office and secrecy in Modi's first cabinet shuffle. Some doubtful performers may also be moved aside. Given the frequent ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the Line of Control and international border, and also the Chinese incursions along the Line of Actual Control, the need for a strong and full-time defence minister was paramount. Parrikar has his job cut out. The new assignment will be a stiff challenge to him, but it will also provide him a platform to build a reputation for the future. Modi's move to make his ministers work in unison is a wonderful way of handling the Government at the Centre. — C K Subramaniam, Sanpada
DAY by day it is becoming amply clear that the BJP is controlled by the RSS. No major policy decision or appointments like CMs, important portfolios etc can be taken without involving the RSS. Skywalk needed I WAS happy to read that 300 hawkers were cleared from Chembur Station Road to M G Acharya Road near Chembur Railway Station. The authorities must look into constructing a foot-over-bridge (skywalk) from Amar Mahal near Chembur Railway Station to Choitram Gidwani Marg near Golf Club via Chembur Railway Station to Ashish Theater near Chembur Colony on Ghatkopar Chembur Road to enable pedestrians walk without difficulty. This will also ease the use of hawkers on the roads as the pedestrians, mainly women and school and college students will walk safely on these (skywalks). The authorities can ensure that these skywalks will be free from hawkers and will provide safety to pedestrians. — Cajetan Peter D’Souza, Ghatkopar

MBMC Ward Officer Swapnil Sawant suspended By Suresh Golani
A
larmed by the massive illegal constructions mushrooming in and around the coastal areas of Uttan, municipal commissioner, Subhash Laakhe, seems to have finally decided to crack whip against errant civic officials. Seen as his first stringent action to put an end to the illegal construction menace plaguing the Mira Bhayandar region, the civic chief today passed suspension orders of ward officer Swapnil Sawant, for his alleged failure in tackling the problem of illegal construction in his jurisdiction. “Yes, the ward officer has been suspended with immediate effect and this is a signal to other officials that no laxity will be tolerated in this context.” confirmed Laakhe. It may be recalled that former ward officer of this same zone, Sunil Yadav alongwith a Nationalist Congress Corporator (NCP) had landed into the ACB net in December, 2013 while accepting a bribe of Rs.1.5 lakh from a local builder to shelter his illegal construction in Uttan. Thanks to the passthe-buck game being played between the planning au-
thority -MMRDA and the service provider-Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the Dongri-Uttan-Dhavgi-Chowk be lt had become a hot-bed for illegal construction activities posing a serious threat to the eco-sensitive region. However the stern attitude adopted by Laakhe is bound to have it’s determined effect on other civic officials who have been bestowing their blessing on the illegal construction mafia.Converted into a “Tourism Zone” by the State Government authorities, the scenic coastal region is virtually being exploited by the local mafia which has been involved in all sorts of constructions including illegal tenements and row-houses. The mounting number of complaints against illegal construction's across the twin-city had prompted former deputy municipal commissioner Vilas Dhage, to issue show cause notices to all six ward officers seeking an Action Taken Report (ATR) on complaints. However the ward officials were unnerved by the notices and continued to turn a Nelson’s eye towards the illegal activities.

RTI activist writes to CM, requests report be handed over to CBI to curb graft in the department
By Philip Varghese
A
n Enquiry Committee that was appointed by the State Government in 2013 to curb the corruption and malpractices in the Food and Drugs Department (FDA) has asked for CBI inquiry to put a check and also bring in transparency in the working of the FDA. RTI activist Anil Galgali who was instrumental in the whole process of getting the report has asked the government to make the report public. Anil Galgali has also written to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis and appealed to him to hand over the commission report to the CBI, which in turn will investigate this report and maybe help in curbing corruption in the department. An RTI to this effect was filed by Galgali, who in turn had to face a lot of flak in getting the report out from the Department.
“The 159-page report is nothing but a highlight on how public life is put at larger risk by FDA and how corruption has made this department sick. The committee was formed by the Government on January 21, 2013 and submitted its detailed report only on April 17, 2014. As per the report under section 3.16, drugs (Cost control) resolu-
political backing and middlemen have made merry thus compromising safety standards. In this regard a CBI inquiry would definitely help to curb this corrupted department. To bring transparency is the key, which has been missing since long in FDA. Also this report, which is of utmost necessity for every common person, should be published by the government or made available on any Government website. For this purpose, I have written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, medical education minister Vinod Tawde and the Chief Secretary Swadhin Kshatriya. Another social activist Yajurvedi Rao who is active in the FDA, has demanded the recommendations of the Committee to be immediately taken into account by the Government and bring in the much required transparency in the department.”

Fortis Raheja Hospital has initiated a nationwide campaign to curb the spread of early development of diabetes among school children. In its initial phase, the campaign would cover city-based schools with diabetologists
and nutritionists delivering guest lectures in schools on health benefits associated with the intake of ‘healthy breakfast’. The launch of this nationwide campaign against childhood obesity and diabetes will kickstart on ‘World Diabetes Day’ on November 14, also observed as ‘Children’s Day’. “The focus is on motivating children to consume ‘healthy breakfast’. When the awareness is inculcated in children, it easily reaches their parents. When children start advising adults on the harmful effects of fast food accumulation, it can easily bring about a solution. Our effort is to create awareness among the students and teachers about the value of nutrition and healthy food, the difference between junk and poisonous food and inculcating the values of consuming homemade food,” said Dr Anil Boraskar, diabetologist at Fortis Raheja Hospital and the Chair Elect of South East Asia – Indian Diabetic Federation.
Dr Boraskar added, “Through the series of lectures, we strongly recommend that people should avoid sugar and fats in their daily intake, as it contains high Omega 6 & Omega 3 fatty acids. If people do not take proper breakfast in the morning, they tend to munch more of fatty foods, which are high on salts and detrimental to the body. The disease normally seen in adults because of obesity is now being seen with an increasing frequency
in children, particularly type 2 Diabetes. Today, more number of children below 12 years are susceptible to type 2 Diabetes and the complications worsens post the age of 20.” The Indian Diabetic Federation (IDF) hopes that the programme will sensitise parents and children about the serious problem of childhood obesity caused due to the intake of unhealthy breakfast. In an effort to educate parents about feeding their children with healthy breakfast, IDF has decided to distribute booklets on nutrition and its positive effects on their child’s health. Fortis Raheja Hospital along with the Indian Diabetic Federation have also initiated other activities for ‘World Diabetes Day’, which would include an exhibition depicting the problems associated with an intake of unhealthy breakfast and its prevention, discussion on ‘what includes an healthy breakfast’ and guidance lectures for corporate doctors.

id you know that reducing your carbohydrate intake not only helps with weight loss, but also boosts your heart’s health? This is what a recent study, conducted by Tulane University School of Public Health in New Orleans, suggests. We asked Karishma Chawla, a renowned nutritionist, to explain what she thought of the study and she told us, “When it comes to weight loss, cutting down on carbohydrates is definitely more effective than cutting down on fat. Just by taking into account the quality of carbohydrates you’re consuming, you can lose weight in a healthy manner. For example, one bowl of pasta made in red sauce contains a simple carbohydrate — maida, which leads to a rise in insulin.” Read on to learn more about the study and find out what our experts have to say about it.

« Know more almond milK Almond milk is gaining popularity as a health food. Shirley Mistry tells you about her experience trying it
A
lmond milk is the new food fad on the block. Mainly beneficial for those who are lactose intolerant, more and more people are giving up dairy and switching to almond milk, as it acts as an exceptional dairy substitute, while giving you the benefits of almonds as well. If you don’t know how almond milk can benefit your health, take a look at some of it’s key benefits. n Fewer calories: A cup of whole milk contains roughly 150 calories, as opposed to a cup of almond milk, that contains roughly 60 calories which is less than half of the calories found in whole milk. n Skin solution: A serving of almond milk fulfils 50% of your daily vitamin E requirements, making it very good for your skin. Not only will it nourish it, almond milk will also help protect it from sun damage. n Build & heal: Almond milk contains several B vitamins and iron, which help build, as well as repair your muscles. n Bone builder: Almond milk doesn’t have as much calcium as cow’s milk, but it does meet 30% of your daily requirement and also meets 25% of your daily requirement of vitamin D. These two nutrients strengthen your bones and teeth and reduce your risk of suffering from arthritis and osteoporosis.
Give it a Go
In several countries, almond milk is available in cartons, similar to other types of milk. However in India, it is a rarity to find, and the imported varieties are exorbitantly priced. So, when I came across a recipe to make almond milk at home, I couldn’t help but try it out. Start off by soaking a cup of almonds overnight. The next morning, drain the almonds and blend them with 2-2½ cups of water in a food processor. This will take around five minutes (any sooner, and you will be left with chunks of almonds that haven’t been blended). Once you have blended it well, you will find that the water has turned opaque and milky and that the almonds have been reduced to a fine meal-like texture. Next, most recipes will ask you to pass the almond milk through a nut bag (bag made especially for this step). Since I didn’t have one, I used a muslin cloth instead, and the results were just as good. Once all the milk has been passed through, squeeze the muslin cloth to extract as much milk as you can. Sweeten it with honey or sugar and your almond milk is ready. Although I thought it would be cumbersome to make, it took a mere 15 minutes to prepare and lasted a good, 2-3 days in the refrigerator. While you can add it to your tea, I much preferred drinking it plain or pouring it over granola. And, if like me, you don’t want to throw away the leftover almond meal, there are several easy recipes to turn the leftovers into crackers and energy bars. >> Almond milk is a great replacement for cow’s milk
the Study
the reSultS
The study was a small, clinical trial of obese adults. It included 148 obese adults, who did not suffer from diabetes or heart problems. The group was divided into two halves, with one half being fed a low-carbohydrate diet, while the rest were asked to follow a low-fat diet plan. People from both groups were given counselling sessions by a dietician, where the low-fat diet group was asked to ensure that not more than 30% of their daily calories came from fat, while the lowcarbohydrate diet group was given a limit of 40g carbohydrates per day. At the end of one year, the low-fat group eaten an average of nearly 200g of carbohydrates every day, as compared to the approximate 130g of the lowcarbohydrate group.
At the end of the study, people in the low-carbohydrate group had lost an average of 5kg each, whereas the lowfat group had only lost an average of 2kg each. People on the lowcarbohydrate diet also saw improvements in their levels of HDL cholesterol and triglycerides — another type of blood fat. Fitness expert and nutritionist, Neeraj Mehta, gives us a scientific explanation for the results. He tells us, “Carbohydrates serve as fuel for your body, but consuming excessive carbohydrates can cause an insulin imbalance leading to an increase in fat storage in your body. In other words, an excessive intake of carbohydrates can overstimulate the release of insulin and provide more calories, resulting in
more fat storage in your adipose tissues. I believe that the study holds true, but I feel that further research needs to be conducted.”
the eSSentialS However, the study doesn’t suggest that you completely eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. You still need a certain amount of essential carbohydrates to maintain good health. According to the theory, you should cut down your intake to 28% and consume fibre-rich food such as whole wheat grains, brown rice, oatmeal and beans. Karishma advises, “Steer clear of food that includes white sugar, white flour, honey and fruit juices. Consume more quantities of leafy green vegetables and fruits such as apples, oranges and sweet lime.”

10 ways to:
Prevent mosquito bites No matter what season it is, mosquitoes are ubiquitous in Mumbai. If you’re tired of dealing with the bites and the risks of diseases and infection that these pesky creatures carry, Dev Goswami has some tips for you
The terminator Even if you try all our tips, you will inevitably still come across a few of these irritating pests. For such times, your best option is to eliminate them. Avoid using a single fist, as the air movement caused by your hand will just warn the mosquito to fly away. Try clapping instead — this way the air from your palm will push the mosquito towards your other palm. You can also use electric racquets that are easily available — but remember that they don’t last for long and sometimes give off a foul smell.
4
Take the initiative If you just can’t seem to control the mosquito problem at home or at office, it might be because of your surroundings. Maybe there is a garbage dump nearby that is causing the problem. Remember that apart from the inconvenience, mosquitoes carry diseases. So don’t hesitate to deal with what might be causing the mosquitoes to breed in your area.
5
3 Avoid floral fragrances If you’re heading to a lawn party or a wedding, avoid wearing floral fragrances. Lawns and gardens are usually infested with mosquitoes and floral fragrances will attract them, since mosquitoes love nectar, which comes from flowers. So, avoid wearing floral fragrances to places that are infested with mosquitoes.
1
W
hile it is perfectly normal to find your hearing slightly muffled after a flight or a trip down from a highaltitude area, sensing that your hearing is weakened and that sounds are muffled all the time can be a sign of hearing loss. Before it is too late and you realise that you’ve lost your hearing abilities considerably, take our quiz to see if you are displaying the subtle signs of progressively losing your hearing ability.
Avoid beer Although it needs more research, a study found that those who drink beer are more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes. However, the study doesn’t state if this applies to other forms of alcohol as well. So, if nothing seems to be working for you, try avoiding beer — even if it doesn’t work against the mosquitoes, your waistline will thank you!
2
Au naturel While you’re travelling, it is not always possible to follow many of the tips that we’ve listed. And so, insect repellents are your best bet. However, if you want to avoid chemical-based repellents, you can opt for natural oils such as that of the citronella plant. Neem is also quite effective at repelling mosquitoes. In fact, you can even burn a few neem leaves in your home as the fumes will help keep mosquitoes away.
Do you often find yourself asking people to repeat what they have said, because you missed out on some parts of the conversation? a. Yes. b. No.
6
Time your outings Remember that mosquitoes are at their worst just after sunset. So, avoid exercising after dusk since that, combined with your body heat, will make you an easy target for mosquitoes. Similarly, avoid going to the swimming pool after dark. Though the chlorinated water won’t attract many mosquitoes, you’ll still find several mosquitoes flying around the changing rooms and by the poolside.
7
8
Cool down You might not know this, but one of the many things that attracts mosquitoes to humans is body heat. So if you’re finding it hard to sleep because of mosquitoes, take a cold shower to cool your body down. It’s not the perfect solution and might not work if your house is plagued with mosquitoes, but it is worth a shot. The power of air One of the easiest ways to prevent mosquitoes from landing on your body is to make it hard for them to fly around you. An easy way to do this is to turn off the air conditioner and turn on the fan instead. An AC might cool the room better, but a fan sends out forceful wafts of air that will make it hard for the mosquitoes to fly.
Cover up This is an important tip, especially when you’re walking or travelling after dusk. The lesser skin you expose, the lesser you are likely to get bitten by a mosquito. So, avoid wearing shorts and wear long sleeved tops to protect your arms. Also, opt for lighter colours, because dark colours such as black attract mosquitoes.

Shut the pot You’re probably aware that stagnant water breeds mosquitoes and so, you should avoid letting water collect in your home. But, have you thought about your toilet? From broken flush tanks to the pot itself, it’s a source of stagnant water that you can’t really dispense with. The wise thing to do is to keep your toilet lid closed and get your flush tank repaired.

If you do suffer from hearing loss, take a look at the four broad types of hearing loss for you to narrow down your impairment and seek appropriate medical assistance
CenTrAl AudiTory ProCeSSing diSorder
devices are usually used to improve the hearing loss caused by this condition.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), is a type of hearing loss where your ears aren’t at fault. While they may be working perfectly, it is your brain that is at fault. It is defined by a loss in hearing because your brain finds it difficult to process sounds. If you find it extremely difficult to hear people clearly when there is a lot of background noise, such as in a mall or on a busy street, you may want to check for CAPD.
SenSorineurAl HeAring loSS
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the cochlea — the part of the ear that converts sound into neurosignals and sends them to the brain — gets damaged. Damage to this auditory nerve is permanent and the only way to restore hearing is by using hearing aids and cochlear implants. It is usually a condition associated with the elderly and can also take place due to excessive exposure to noise and chemicals.
ConduCTive HeAring loSS
Conductive hearing loss is a sign of your outer or middle ear not functioning optimally. It is a form of hearing loss usually caused by a build up of earwax or fluids, abnormal bone growth or even an ear infection. Although it is more commonly found in children, it isn’t fatal, as it can be treated. Bone conduction hearing aids and bone anchored hearing
Mixed HeAring loSS >> Check for the four types of hearing loss and get treated accordingly
Mixed hearing loss occurs when you’re affected by both sensorineural hearing loss and conductive hearing loss. While sensorineural hearing loss is permanent, conductive hearing loss can be temporary (for example: if hearing loss is induced by an ear infection).

Strengthening
with Safety A new technique called BMXStrength ®, designed by Neeraj Mehta, promises the least risk of injury while working out. Dev Goswami finds out more
W
e’re sure that minor habits such as flexing your muscles, holding your breath midway through an exercise and fast, jerky movements are something you’re familiar with — even if you aren’t the person performing them. Such movements are believed to help boost the intensity of your workout and are quite common. However, if Neeraj Mehta, director and technical head of GFFI Fitness Academy, is to believed, these movements go against your body’s natural mechanics and stress your joints. The PhD in Human Biomechanics, tells us that his study and understanding of anatomy and body movements led him to design BMXStrength ®, which offers safety, while giving you more significant results than conventional exercises.
neeraJ’s PiCks
>> BMXStrength ® focuses on exercises that lay emphasis on posture and breathing
We ask Neeraj to tell us what he considers to be essential exercises that should be a part of workout. Find out what he has to say: n Dead lifts, squats and pushups for strength and endurance. n Fast running, spot running, animal walk up and high jump squats for muscle coordination and endurance, as well as for cardiovascular endurance. n Planks and V poses for abdominal strengthening.
how does iT helP? One of the main benefits of BMXStrength ® is that the exercises are joint-friendly, and can help rehabilitate and treat any joint injuries that you might be suffering from. Also, these exercises incorporate movements that make your joints work in their natural range of motion, which helps prevent injuries, especially if you’re injury-prone. Other benefits, Neeraj tells us, include faster development of your muscles, improved endurance and increased flexibility.
how does iT work? We’re sure that you’re wondering what kind of exercises this programme includes that make it so safe and effective. The routine includes a host of conventional exercises, which are performed with a lot of emphasis on the correct posture and breathing techniques. The latter, Neeraj explains, plays an important role, as it ensures that blood
>> When you’re performing a dumbbell curl, your shoulder and elbow should be in line
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2014
Common misTakes Workout mistakes can lead to injuries. Neeraj tells us about a few: n Performing movements that are angular (joint) friendly. This puts pressure on the connective tissues of your body. n Maintaining bad posture or performing an exercise while your body is not centrally balanced. n Squeezing your joints while performing any exercise. This stops or slows down the flow of oxygen to the muscles that are used while performing the exercise. n Holding your breath during the movements impedes blood and oxygen circulation. n Jerking and bouncing while performing an exercise. n Performing exercises very quickly, to finish the amount of repetitions that you need to perform. You should focus instead on feeling the muscle contraction or stretch that comes with performing a movement. n Trying to lift a weight that is beyond your muscles’ capacity. n Working out for too long.
circulates properly and reaches the muscles that need it the most when you’re performing a particular exercise. Other factors that play an important role in BMXStrength ® include, having a proper grip, immaculate posture and a range of natural, stress-free movements. For example, when you’re performing a dumbbell curl, the end-point of your elbow (the part that faces the back), should be in line with the front edge of your shoulder (the side that faces forward). Neeraj adds, “Practising this posture ensures and allows for proper elbow flexion.” Similarly, he tells, “When you’re performing a lat pull-down, you should actually lean backwards and ensure that the pulley/ bar doesn’t touch your chest.” It is easy to see that BMXStrength ® is all about performing conventional exercises in a way that ensures that they don’t stress your muscles and joints. This, combined with a focus on breathing correctly and performing exercises at a slow pace, Neeraj tells us, will ensure that you reduce your risk of suffering from injuries, and also make your workout more effective and result-oriented. *To see what workshops and courses they offer, or to find out more about BMXStrength ®, you can visit www.gffi-fitness.org or their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BMXStrength.

>> Do you often stay up at night? You might be smarter and more creative than the average human being!
You’d think good bathroom etiquette was something that comes naturally, but you couldn’t be further away from the truth. Shirley Mistry reminds you of some basic things to keep in mind, in case you find yourself, or others around you, slacking
W
e’re sure that you know better than to walk out of the washroom without washing your hands, but what about the other faux pas that you might be committing in there? In all likelihood, you share a bathroom with other people, whether it’s at work or at home and so, take a look at our nifty guide which serves as a gentle reminder of what not to do!
Wipe doWN No one wants to walk into a bathroom, only to find the toilet seat spotted with drops of water, even if it was just because of an accidental splash while you washed your hands. So, ensure that you always wipe the seat dry before you leave the bathroom. After all, imagine walking into a bathroom yourself, only to find the seat questionably splattered with water — not so pleasant, is it?

while dissecting last night’s party over a phone call is simply gross. You are not only creeping out everyone who is within earshot, but are also being disrespectful to the person you are talking to. The flush doesn’t make for exciting ambient sound when you are having a conversation. Also, if you are using a public loo and recognise the person next to you by their shoes or clothes, do them a favour and zip it! Nothing is more awkward than having to make small talk across cubicles.
KNoCK, doN’t sHove This one is purely for when you are using a public bathroom. Want to check if it is empty? Knock, instead of pushing the door with all your might. With public restrooms, the screws on the latch are often loose and in some cases, the door may not be properly shut, leading to a horrifying and embarrassing situation, if you end up walking in on someone. There have been news reports about how the president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, is a night owl. Yamini Walia tells you how it is benefitting him
First things first, use only as much tissue as required. Second, once you’re done, find a dustbin to toss the wad into. No one likes to walk into the loo to find trails of damp tissue hanging from every surface. If the dustbin is full or missing, take the tissue out with you instead of slyly dropping it in one corner or behind the WC.

Yes, we know that you are being a model citizen by washing your hands thoroughly, but ensure that you aren’t so vigorous in your efforts that you flood the entire bathroom before you exit. Water splashing off your face looks great only in facewash advertisements. In reality, the aftermath can thoroughly put off the next person — no one wants to wade through puddles before having to do their business.
tiMely exit Once you’re done using the bathroom, leave. There is no need to linger, examine your face repeatedly, take a selfie, scrutinise the selfie or agonise over a pimple, when you can do all this in front of a hand mirror at your desk or in your room. You could be stalling other people and inconveniencing them greatly, especially at work.
CHit CHat Do everyone a favour and leave your cell phone out of your visits to the bathroom. Doing your business
e believe that it’s essential for you to get the right amount of sleep in order to stay fit and healthy. But, there’s no harm in staying up a few extra hours, if your lifestyle permits you to do so. While being a morning person is excellent, being a night owl has its benefits too. Several studies support this fact and in this article we list a few for you.
Yes, it’s true. Night owls may have a higher IQ level, according to a study conducted by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary scientist at the London School of Economics and Political Science. The study stated that intelligent children are likely to grow up to be nocturnal adults, who go to bed late and wake up late on both weekdays and weekends.
NigHt streNgtH
Night owls might even be physically stronger than people who wake up early. Researchers at the University of Alberta tested the leg strength of nine morning people and nine night people. They found that the early birds’ strength remained consistent throughout the day, whereas the night owls’ strength peaked to higher levels at night.
More iNtelligeNt
Intelligent minds are born at night, explains a study conducted by the University of Madrid, which examined the sleeping patterns of 1,000 teens. The study found that night owls scored higher on inductive reason tests, which are related to general intelligence, as compared to their morning bird counterparts.
Creatively iNspiriNg
Marina Giampietro, lead author of the study that was conducted at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Milan, concluded that night owls are more creative, because staying up late encourages the development of a non-conventional spirit and the ability to find alternative and original solutions.

EW DELHI: Suresh Prabhu on Monday took over as the new Railway Minister and said rail safety and customer service would be his priorities, as he seeks to unleash the true potential of the transport behemoth. "We have faced lots of challenges in running the railways in the past. We do have potential which has not been properly utilised," he told PTI after assuming charge. Prabhu, who took oath as a Cabinet minister on Sunday shortly after he joined BJP from Shiv Sena, replacing SD Sadananda Gowda who was shifted to the Law ministry in the reshuffle. "The Prime Minister has decided that the condition (of railways) has to change...Our two focus areas will be customer service and railway safety as passenger safety is in-
creasingly becoming an area of concern," he said. Observing that the people have reposed lot of faith in the government, he said the steps they undertake in railways will be seen in due course of time. "What we will do will be seen in due course of time, so no announcement will be made is the announcement," he said. Prabhu said the economy is also dependent on railways. Railways are an integrating factor for the economy and, "if we work in this direction we can propel economic growth," he said. With the public transporter having the largest workforce in the country, Prabhu said addressing their concerns will also be high on his agenda as they are the driving force behind the railway's journey.

Parrikar, 58, met Defence Secretary R.K. Mathur and all the three Services Chiefs minutes after he took over in his South Block Office. The new Minister echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Makein-India' slogan and said the country should manufacture "as much as possible" domestically. "Very unfortunate. Whatever will be there will be very transparent but fast process. I think that is one of my specialties," he told reporters here replying to a question about the delayed acquisition process in the last 10 years and defence deals often getting mired in corruption. He asked everyone to give him time to understand the issues con-
cerning the new Ministry. Parrikar said he was 'equally worried' over the recent sinking of a torpedo recovery vessel off the coast of Visakhapatnam and recalled the series of accidents that the Navy has had over the last year and a half. "Let me first take real grip of the situation so that the exact position can be expressed to you," he said. With his task cut-out, Parrikar, an IITian, thanked Modi for reposing confidence in him by giving him this "very important and sensitive Ministry". The former Goa CM admitted though he has exposure and good administrative experience, the type of requirement at the national level may be different. "I was left with no time. Let me be frank. I had to virtually pack in five minutes. Two days was given for all the excercise," he said while requesting the media to give him time.

The issue of income tax department summons without adequate caution and due application of mind has caused concern to the Board. It has advised the I-T staff at all levels to follow these instructions ‘scrupulously’ as non-adherence to the directions will be ‘viewed very seriously’ By A Business Reporter
of instructions for avoidance of baseless assessment and disposal of grievances within a stipulated time period. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which is the apex body to frame policies for the I-T department, said the new instructions were aimed at bringing about a non- adversarial regime as stated by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in recent interactions he had with the department. “On several occasions the Finance Minister has emphasised the need for furthering a non-adversarial tax regime. A non-adversarial tax regime cannot be achieved without concerted endeavor at each level especially at levels where the public interaction is high,” the CBDT wrote to all Principal Chief Commissioners and Chief Commissioners of I-T in the country last week, reports PTI.
Regarding issuance of summons which is a major area of complaint by taxpayers, the Board said these communications, sent to assessees under provisions of the I-T Act, should only be made in “deserving cases”. “The issue of summons without adequate caution and due application of mind has caused concern to the Board. Supervisory authorities have to ensure that the summons are issued only in deserving cases. Summons should also clarify if the person has been called as a witness or in his own case and the matter for which he or she has been called,” CBDT said. It also asked the range heads of the I-T department to “supervise the work of their subordinates to ensure due discharge” of duty in scrutiny cases. Under I-T laws, when an assessee’s case lands in scrutiny (done by computer system on a random
basis), he or she has to supply additional document-based information to the taxman including making visits to the officer concerned, which has been a major issue of grievance for taxpayers for long. “Despite less than one per cent cases being selected for scrutiny assessment, this (scrutiny) area of work continues to remain in focus where the tax administration is questioned as adversarial....The range heads are required to ensure that frivolous additions or highpitched assessments without proper basis are not made,” CBDT told the I-T department. The Board, under the same order, advised the IT staff at all levels to follow these in“scrupulously” as structions non-adherence to the directions will be “viewed very seriously and disciplinary action initiated”.
faces various road blocks in traditional car export markets like Europe and Africa. Due to various regulatory issues in big export markets like Algeria and Sri Lanka and
slowdown in Europe, passenger car exports were down 6.95 % to 3,12,190 units in the April-October period, as compared to 3,35,493 units in the same period of previous fiscal. "We are working with the government, seeking their help to enter new geographies. We have submitted a detailed report to the Ministry of Commerce, informing them about the regions which have potential," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Deputy Director General Sugato Sen said. The auto industry wants the government to facilitate exports into various new markets, including those in Latin America, he added. "We want the government to support us to get into various markets including Chile, Peru, Colombia, Nigeria and South Africa. We don't even have FTA with Chile, which is one market with great export potential," Sen said. When asked about the issues being faced by the exporters in the traditionally strong
markets, Sen said: "Europe is not doing well while tariffs have gone up significantly in Sri Lanka. In Algeria, which is one of the top export markets for car makers, introduction of "non-tariff barriers" has hit shipments to that country. Elaborating further, he said Europe's share in total car exports has come down to 16.9 % in 2013-14 from 37.9 % in 2004-05. Similarly, the contribution of SAARC countries, including Sri Lanka, to total exports has gone down to 10.9 % in last fiscal from 23.3 % in 2004-05. On the other hand export contribution of Latin America has increased from 7 % in 2004-05 to 13.6 % in 201314. Even exports to African markets have seen upsurge, with the region now accounting for 32.5 % share of the total exports against 16.4 % in 2004-05. "With all the traditional strong export markets not doing well, it is time to look at new regions and for this we are seeking the government's support," Sen said.

ncremental recruitment by the information technology (IT) services industry, which accounted for nearly a quarter of the organised private sector employment in India in fiscal 2014, “will halve by fiscal 2018 despite a 13-15% growth forecast in the industry’s revenues during this period” believes Crisil Ratings. This, it says “contrasts with the hiring pattern of the last decade, which had mirrored revenue growth in the industry. The paradigm shift will come as IT services vendors struggle to crank up profitability in a milieu where global weakness is forcing their clients to optimise costs to hold on to margins. On their part, vendors responded by rationalising their bench strength, improving utilisation rate and trimming operational costs. Equally importantly, this has ramifications for future engineering graduates because it will narrow the opportunities available in future. CRISIL believes despite revenue growth, companies will run very tight ships because of which incremental employment will be curbed. Vendors are gradually adopting just-in-time hiring and increasing the proportion of fixed-price contracts in their portfolio, which reduces the need to maintain flab on the bench. Additionally, they are migrating towards higher-value service offerings such as consulting, investing in intellectual property (IP)-based products and leveraging on the emergence of social media, mobile, analytics and cloud (SMAC). Says Ramraj Pai, President, – Ratings, CRISIL: “These initiatives will
increase revenue per employee (RPE) at a compounded annual growth rate of 7% between fiscals 2015 and 2018. This, along with improvement in employee utilisation, will over time delink hiring from revenue growth. We also foresee a transformation in the recruitment pattern where employers become more focused and picky, increasingly seeking specific skill sets. This will lead to greater lateral hiring.” India’s IT sector, with revenues of $118 billion in the last fiscal, employs 3.1 million people, or around 24% of organised private-sector employment in India. The sector has practically driven growth in organised private jobs in the country over the past decade. Its initial phase of high revenue growth between fiscals 2003 and 2007 also saw a substantial growth in recruitments. This was followed by the global financial crisis between 2008 and 2010 and moderate recovery during fiscals 2011 and 2013. Yet hiring rates mirrored revenue growth. CRISIL believes the sector is now entering a new phase where this will gradually delink. Says Anuj Sethi, Director-Ratings, CRISIL: “We believe despite healthy revenue growth of 13-15% for IT services foreseen in the medium term -aided by recovery in discretionary spending by clients -- job additions will gradually shrink by about 50% to 55,000 by fiscal 2018 from 105,000 in fiscal 2014, as companies opt for more-focused, higher-value initiatives.” This process has already been set in motion, as evidenced in the reduction in employee costs from 69% of total costs in fiscal 2013 to 64% in the last fiscal.
Healthcare Providers IT Spend Rising By A Business Reporter
H
ealth care providers in India are expected to spend $1.1 billion US Dollars (USD) on IT products and services in 2014, an increase of 5 % over 2013, according to Gartner, Inc. This forecast includes spending by healthcare providers (includes hospitals and hospital systems, as well as ambulatory service and physicians' practices) on internal services, software, IT services, data center, devices and telecom services. IT Services, which includes consulting, implementation, IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing, will be the largest overall spending category throughout the forecast period within the health care providers sector. It is expected to reach $300 million USD in 2014, up from $280 million in 2013 – with the consulting segment growing 10 %. Internal Services will achieve the highest growth rate amongst the spending categories – forecast to be 18 % in 2014. Internal services refer to salaries and benefits paid to the information services staff of an organization. The information services staff includes all company employees that plan, develop, implement and maintain information systems. Software will achieve a growth rate of 8.4 % in 2014 to reach $98 million USD in 2014, up from $90 million in 2013, led by growth in vertical specific software (software applications that are unique to a vertical industry. These are stand-alone applications that are not modules or extensions of horizontal applications).

avarasa Academy of Indian Clasical Dance (Navi Mumbai) presented the debut bharatanatyam performance of Aparna, Krishnendu, Parvathy, Sneha and Srishti, disciples of Nritya Shiromani Guru Sushama at the Agri Koli Bhavan in Nerul. It was a pleasure to watch the five wonders dance with enthusiasm and involvement. The teenaged dancers Aparna, Krishnendu, Parvathy, Sneha and Srishti performed ten items from the bharatanatyam repertoire commencing with the invocatory Ganapati Stuti andVandana and concluding with the intricate Mohan Kalyani Thillana. Although the young dancers were a little nervous, the best part of their performance was the smiles that they maintained throughout the programme, which was really remarkable. The credit definitely goes to their mentor Guru Sushama Gopinath. All the five students have been learning
and glory of the lord of creation, preservation and destruction. The Varnam which was the most elaborate number of the evening, commands the varied facets and the technique of bharatanatyam which takes several years for the dancers to master. The Keertanam and the Devistuti were in praise of the gods and the goddess, revealing the power and vitality of the divine spirit. The dancers concluded the programme with the complex Thillana pertaining to rhythmic patterns and varied movements. The dancers received fine orchestral support from Guru Sushama Gopinath for Nattuvangam, Sivaprasad for vocal, Shankaranaraynan for mridangam, Vishbharatanatyam for about eight years and are nudas for violin, Nandakumar for flute and students of DAV Public School in Nerul. Gopal for moorsing. On the whole a fine While the Jatiswaram formed a fine syn- attempt. The chief guest who is an accomthesis of Jati and Swaras – a fine combina- plished Kuchipudi exponent praised the tion of both music and melody, which was efforts of the mentor in promoting Indian danced to perfection by the dancers. The classical dance in a world which is easily Shivastuti interpreted the magnificence swayed by Western influence and culture.
The musical life of Kumar Gandharva By Amarendra Dhaneshwar
T
he late Kumar Gandharva (1924 – 1993) was not only one of the most celebrated child prodigies of Hindustani music but was also the first professional singer in his family. Born as Shivramayya Komkali, he earned the epithet 'Kumar Gandharva' (child minstrel) at the young age of 10, when he began to reproduce the disc music of great stalwarts of the earlier generation like Faiyaz Khan, Abdul Karim Khan and Sunderabai. He went on to defy conventional gharana norms with a view to interpret classical music as per his own individual instincts and genius. He also created twelve new ragas while seeking to establish the close connection between the folk music of Northern India and Hindustani music. Kumar Gandharva's progeny is full of musicians. His wife Vasundhara, now 86, has had a good career. His son, Mukul Shivputra, is acknowledged as a wayward genius. His daughter Kalapini Komkali has made a name for herself as the female voice of Kumar Gandharva's singing style. His grandson Bhuvanesh is now a leading singer of the young generation. Kalapini and Bhuvanesh got together to present a programme in memory of Kumar Gandharva on the occasion of his 90th birth anniversary at the Yashvantrao Chavan Hall. The duo gave a spirited performance which was lapped up by the many fans of Kumar Gandharva. A book on his life was released at the hands of ace photographer Raghu Rai and poet/critic Ashok Vajpayee was the main speaker. Both Kalapini and Bhuvanesh look upon
Kumar Gandhrava as the supreme ideal of their music. Kumar Gandharva's enunciation of the musical note used to be full of emotional intensity. Both the singers have inherited this. The programme was designed to depict some aspects of his creativity. The book has been published by 'Rajhans Prakashan'. Kumar Gandharva made a number of compositions in the existing ragas. Songs like 'Mukh Tero Karo Kahe Hai Ri' in the raga 'Yaman Kalyan' became very popular. Bhuvanesh sang it with due sincerity. Kumar made compositions in traditional ragas like 'Kedar','Gauri','Bageshri' or 'Malkauns'. The duo presented a select few from this repertoire. 'Aiso Kaiso Aayo Rita Re' in the raga 'Bahar' is an unusual composition depicting a different mood. Not a run of the mill 'Bahar', it was sung with fervour by Kalapini. Tarana is a song form made of apparently nonsense syllables like 'Tan, nan, tom, dir', etc. Kumar's taranas in ragas like 'Kafi' and 'Bhoopali' gained wide approval. Komkalis sang a sample of this form too. Kumar Gandharva also invented compound ragas like 'Sohini Bhatiyar', 'Dhanbasanti' and others. 'Mharuji Bhulo Na Mane', the composition in 'Sohini Bhatiyar', has an innate beauty which defies description. It is a combination of the late night raga 'Sohini' and morning raga 'Bhatiyar'. Kalapini sang it with a lot of emotion. Another aspect of his creativity was his presentation of 'Ritu Sangeet' or theme concerts depicting the mood and spirit of seasons like monsoon (Geet Varsha), winter (Geet Hemant) and spring (Geet Vasant). These concerts comprised classical music, semi classical forms like thumri and hori as well as folk music numbers. The programme succeeded in providing glimpses into the rich treasure of Kumar Gandharva's music.

won’t beget a child. She opposes her son’s marriage to Sonali, but they get married against her wishes. Two years later some land deed has to be transferred and the signature of Rahul is required, so Nandu comes to Mumbai to meet Rahul only to find Sonali playing with a child, who he assumes to be her child but is actually a neighbour’s child. He is amazed that his prediction has gone wrong and informs Rahul’s mother who comes to meet her grandson. All is well until Nandu realises that something is not right, which starts a comedy of errors. Aniket is charming and good as usual. Neha Pendse looks good and acts well. Makarand Anaspure is funny and up to his usual comic antics.
Santosh Sawant, who had earlier released his folk fusion album called 'Voice Of Hearts', to reach the hearts of millions and millions of sheer music lovers worldwide, has now forayed into filmmaking to make it big, not just in Bollywood but in global films. 'Jhamela', his debut film revolves around the life of a folk musician. The movie also has autobiographical shades to it as the actor-director has woven his own experiences. Dhoni to miss first Test
M
UMBAI: Upcoming batsman K L Rahul and leg-spinner Karn Sharma were today named in India's 19-member Test squad for the tour of Australia, where skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will skip the opening match owing to an injury. Suresh Raina staged a comeback into the Test fold while wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha also found a place in the squad announced by BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel after a meeting of the selection committee here. With the selectors opting to go for youngsters, senior players like Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha continued to be on the sidelines. Dhoni, who is nursing a forearm injury which he picked up during the truncated series against West Indies, has been ruled out of the first Test in Brisbane (December 4 to 8) and Virat Kohli will lead the team in this match. "Virat Kohli will lead India in the first Test, starting on 4 December 2014, in Brisbane.
M.S. Dhoni has been rested for the first Test as a prophylactic measure to ensure optimum recovery. He will join the team from the second Test onwards, and will lead the team for the rest of the Test series," Patel said in a statement. The selectors also announced the team for the last two ODIs against Sri Lanka to be held in Kolkata (November 13) and Ranchi (November 16). In-form batsman Shikhar
Dhawan and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja have been rested, while Wriddhiman has been dropped from the squad. Rohit Sharma made a comeback in place of Dhawan, while Robin Uthappa also returned to the side at the expense of Saha. Injured pacer Ishant Sharma has been left out of the ODI team for the last two matches with his place going to Vinay Kumar. There were no major surprises in the squad for Aus-
Naman only for opening Test: Patel
Wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha has been named in the squad for India's Test tour of Australia for just one match and he will return home after the opening game at Brisbane, BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel said. "What we have announced today was basically not a 19-member squad, it was 18. For the first Test, Naman Ojha has been added as a replacement of M S Dhoni in case there is a need for a second wicketkeeper. As soon as the first Test is over and Dhoni joins the team,
Naman Ojha will come back," Patel told reporters after the selection committee meeting. Dhoni has been rested from the first Test beginning December 4 to give him more time to recover fully from his right thumb injury. "Dhoni is suffering from a thumb injury. He is on the right track. It has been further decided to rest him for one more Test, so that everything is fine. It was suggested by his physicist and doctors and after that this decision was taken. It is a right thumb injury," Patel said.

When the great horse Astonish won in Hong Kong, Mr. Zavaray was so excited he fell from a chair he was sitting on in his house in Mumbai.
He has however been in the board of appeal of the RWITC for quite sometime. This year, he is at least contesting the RWITC committee elections. And he will be with the Vivek Jain team which is contesting the RWITC committee election in December.
ICC approves revised anti-corruption code
D
UBAI: The ICC approved its revised anticorruption code, which makes it possible for a banned player to play domestic cricket before the end of his international ban. The amendents to the code were ratified by the ICC Board that met here for two days. The revision in the code has given fresh hope to banned Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir to return to action while serving a spotfixing ban that ends in September 2015. ICC Chairman N Srinivasan explained the conditions under which a banned player can play domestic
cricket before the end of his punishment. "The revised Code makes provision for a banned player to gain an early return to domestic cricket in certain circumstances," said Srinivasan. The ICC Board also made some decisions on the upcoming World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The most notable of them is that there will be "no super over in tied matches in the knock-out phase". If such a scenario arises in the quarter-finals and semifinals, the side finishing in the higher position in the group stage will progress.
BU DHABI: Ahmed Shehzad hit a career-best 176 before being rushed to hospital with a fractured skull as Pakistan's batsmen smashed New Zealand around the ground in the first Test. Younis Khan and Misbahul Haq also hit dominant tons to put Pakistan in control on 566 for three declared. But Shehzad's injury briefly set alarm bells ringing. In the final over before lunch, Shehzad was hit on the side of the head trying to hook a short ball by New Zealand seamer Corey Anderson on the hard Abu Dhabi wicket. Shehzad's bat struck the stumps for a hit-wicket dismissal and the dazed batsman fell to the ground before walking off. Shehzad was later rushed to a hospital where scans showed he had a minor skull fracture and will be kept under observation for the next 48 hours. Before the drama, he had hit 17 fours and a six in his 371-ball innings. While team managers worried about the opener, Younis went on to smash an unbeaten 100 -- his 28th Test hundred and fourth in five innings. Misbah knocked an unbeaten 102, his third ton in three innings. Azhar Ali missed his hundred after he was dismissed for 87. At the close on the second day New Zealand were 15-0 with Bren-

UMBAI: Indian Navy dished out a fine disciplined performance to clinch a deserving 4-3 win against Western Railway in a Pool-C league match of the 49th Bombay Gold Cup Hockey Championship, organised by the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited and played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate on Monday. Amit Goswami, skipper Amit Kiro, Naveen Kumar and Mohd Faheem Khan scored a goal each for Navy who led 1-0 at end of the first half. Western Railway got their goals through a brace from Malak Singh and one from Amit Rohidass. The naval outfit showed good understanding and worked in tandem as a team to make inroads towards the Western citadel. They also created the better opening and converted most of the chances that came their way. On the other hand Western looked out of sort and were a disjointed lot. They did not seem to have a game plan and their passing and distribution were dismal. Navy rocked the Western goal in the 23rd minute when from a goalmouth scramble to the ball deflected to Goswami who was unmarked near the right post. He made

Customs rally to hold Air India 1-1 M
UMBAI: Mumbai Customs did well to recover from a first half deficit and share the spoils with Air India in a 1-1 draw in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15, played at the Cooperage ground on Monday evening. Right winger Jonychandra Singh put Air India in front in the 42nd minute while Customs restored parity when hard-working Deepak Irmali scored in the 68th minute. Defending champions Air India encountered a strong challenge from Mumbai Customs as both teams went on the offensive from the start and the match witnessed some good goal-bound forays. While Air India with some neat passing bouts tried to break down the Customs defence, the latter used the long balls to make their way towards the rival citadel. After initial probing from both sides, Air India finally found success when Jonychandra from a snap effort hit the target beating rival goalkeeper Lihaz Koya in the 42nd minute. Customs took that setback in their stride and after resumption made more efforts in search of the equaliser which they managed to score through their nippy striker Irmali in the 68th minute. Later, Customs were forced to play the final quarter of the match with 10 players as Ref-
eree Firoz Ali Shaikh for the second time in the match booked Nafeez C for a reckless tackle, which resulted in him being sent off in the 75thminute. Nafeez was earlier shown the yellow card in the 57th minute for another rash tackle. Referee Shaikh, who controlled the game quite well, also showed the yellow card to Hekmat Singh of Mumbai Customs and Air India’s Siddharth Nayak and Wayne Vaz. Results – Elite Div: Air India 1 (Jonychandra Singh 42nd) drew with Mumbai Customs 1 (Deepak Irmali 68th).

10-MAN ATLETICO BEATEN BY MANAGERLESS SOCIEDAD

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2014
M
ADRID: La Liga champions Atletico Madrid remain four points behind leaders Real Madrid as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at managerless Real Sociedad after being reduced to 10 men. Sociedad are expected to announce the appointment of former Manchester United manager David Moyes in the coming days and on this performance there was plenty to encourage the Scot after Mario Mandzukic had fired Atletico into an early lead from Raul Garcia's fine low cross yesterday. Carlos Vela curled home a wonderful equaliser five minutes later and the Mexican was then extremely unfortunate to see a yellow card for diving when he appeared to have been felled by Diego Godin inside the area. Godin showed the athleticism and awareness that has made him one of the best centre-backs in world football to prevent Sociedad going in front just before the break as he raced back to clear off the line after Imanol Agirretxe had latched onto Miranda's awful backpass and rounded Miguel Angel Moya. Atletico's task became much tougher just four minutes into the second period when Guilherme Siqueira was shown two quickfire bookings to leave the visitors with just 10 men.
Real Sociedad players celebrate during their La Liga football match against Atletico de Madrid at the Anoeta stadium in San Sebastian, northern Spain. Vela had another penalty appeal waved away when he clashed with Mandzukic inside the area and the Croatian international could have restored Atletico's lead at the other end when he turned Cristian Ansaldi's low cross just wide. However, Diego Simeone's men were struggling to retain possession for any period of time and were finally punished eight minutes from time when Imanol Aggirretxe
powered a header home at the near post to hand Sociedad just their second victory of the season. There was also disappointment Valencia and Sevilla on Sunday as they were held at home by Athletic Bilbao and Levante respectively. A point moves Valencia up to third, three points behind Madrid, whilst Sevilla remain fifth but are now level on points with Atletico. Valencia had taken advan-
tage of their lack of European action so far this season to suggest they could pose an unlikely title challenge. However, with their Spanish international strike pairing Paco Alcacer and Rodrigo held scoreless for the sixth consecutive game, even the introduction of Alvaro Negredo as a second-half substitute couldn't breakdown Athletic's well-organised defence. Alcacer had the best opening of the first period as he headed over when unmarked inside the box from Pablo Piatti's free-kick. Piatti was then denied from close range by Gorka Iraizoz and Andres Gomez dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area as Valencia enjoyed a five-minute spell of pressure. Yet, even after Negredo replaced Piatti, Valencia's threat wilted after the break and they were grateful to goalkeeper Diego Alves for a point as the Brazilian bravely blocked Xabi Etxeita's shot from point-blank range with his face three minutes from time. It was a similar story for Sevilla despite going in front when Vitolo headed home Gerard Deulofeu's cross on the half hour mark. Sevilla's top scorer Carlos Bacca then had two chances to seal the three points after the break as he fired just wide and was then denied by a clearance off the line by Juanfran.
Team Anand seeks to gain lost ground S
OCHI (RUSSIA): The initial strategy has backfired and it's time for Viswanathan Anand to reconcile and come out with fresh ideas to recover the lost ground in the World Chess Championship match against holder Magnus Carlsen here today. On what turned out to be a pretty bad day in office, fivetime world champion Anand went down rather tamely in the second game yesterday and now trails 0.5-1.5 in the 12-game match. Anand's body language also suggested that the king is currently down especially in the light of the fact that the opening had gone quite well for the Indian ace in both the games. However, as was the case in the last world championship match, Carlsen tuned the position of both games to his liking after some time and while Anand salvaged a half point in the first game, in the second he never got a chance. Anand looked more tenta-
tive than Carlsen and it was hesitation that cost him dearly in the second game. "I didn't quite look at it that way, in terms of the hour, I kept hesitating between the queen and Bishop move. Even then it's not catastrophic there are many moments after that but may be the slip up had started already," Anand mentioned candidly in the post-game conference when asked about a possible slip-up in the third hour. To his credit, Carlsen was at
his best and did what he has mastered against top class opponents. An innocuous opening reached a level middle game and then the complexities stared to burden Anand to the extent that he fumbled and produced a rare blunder. This was clearly caused by sustained pressure by the Norwegian. While giving his thought on the game Carlsen did not mince words on his choice. "We have an equal but playable position, that's ok by me," he said.
"There was not too much going on to be honest, I thought I might have a slight initiative when I got my rook life I was feeling more optimistic, if black has to go for the set-up (in the game) then it's clear that something has gone pretty seriously wrong," Carlsen said when asked about his opinion. On his general strategy also Carlsen was forthcoming. "I just tried to put him under pressure, I don't know if I played the most accurate way, I think he could certainly have defended better, you cannot win in chess without mistakes, you got to play well to induce those," he said. In the last world championship match, Anand had drawn four before losing the fifth game. The speed king of chess will have to not only stop further damage but also seek a quick cruise control to stage a comeback in the match. In the third game tomorrow Anand will play with white pieces.

CTL will help promote tennis in India: Jankovic By Amanpreet Singh
N
EW DELHI: For a country like India that is deprived of top class tennis action due to lack of top-tier tournaments, organisation of the Champions Tennis League (CTL) will be great for the sport, says former world number one Jelena Jankovic. The 29-year-old Serbian singles star, ranked 14, will play for 'Delhi Dreams' in the six-team league beginning November 17 here at DLTA Complex. India hosts only one ATP 250 tournament - Chennai Open - at the beginning of the season and it was way back in 2008 when the country hosted a top WTA event. "I think the league will help promote tennis in India. There were some tournaments in India several years ago, I was in Bangalore in 2008. It is nice to have a league and get top players playing. I think the standard is great. We have a lot of big names, great champions from the past and now (present)," Jelena told PTI from Thailand, where she is holidaying. "I think, it's fun and exciting to play in that part of the world. It's a different format.
I have never played something like that. I have played Fed Cup, which is different. I am really looking forward to playing in that kind of competition in front of the Indian fans," she said. The Delhi team, also featuring South African Kevin Anderson, Juan Carlos Ferrero and India's Sanam Singh, is co-owned by Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan and businessman Sanjeev Kassal. Jelena, who became world number one in 2008 after reaching the US Open final, said there should be no doubt about the approach of the players in the league. ATP President Chris Kermode had called Mahesh Bhupathi's IPTL a glorified exhibitions. "I don't think that's the case. I think the players will give their best and it will be a great competition," she asserted. Talking about Sania Mirza, whom the Serbian beat in all five meetings on the WTA tour, Jelena said the Indian made a good decision last year by restricting herself to doubles only. Jelena said Sania could have fared better in singles had she not suffered those injuries when she was in her prime.
Top draw David Ferrer pulls out of CTL
The yet to take-off Champions Tennis League (CTL) suffered a major setback when World No.10 David Ferrer pulled out of the event owing to "health issues". Had he played for the Punjab Marshalls franchise, Ferrer would have been the highest-ranked men's player in the League beginning November 17. Speaking on his pull out,
the Spaniard said: "I am sorry to tell my fans in India and in Punjab that I will not be able to play the Champions Tennis League in India. "Over the last six weeks, my tournament schedule has been hectic and because of the many games I've played, a serious inflammation in the lower back has appeared. This prevents me from being able to compete at 100 percent. This injury will not allow me to perform to the best of my ability as I feel pain in my back and I need 10 to 15 days to recover.
