T
he Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed an ambitious plan of 450 km of metro rail network and 120 km of mono rail corridor to offer efficient, convenient and environment friendly transport system in the Mumbai metropolitan region. The project deadline is set for the year 2025. In the recent past, usage of private transport has increased from 20 per cent to 25 per cent as affordable cars are introduced in the competitive market. Consequently, all the roads in the city are choked up and transport has become a nightmare. After the completion of this mega project, usage of private transport will decrease and it will make the city a commuter-friendly city. Experts opine that if this plan materialises then Mumbai will become the
commercial capital of Asia. While addressing at 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, UPS Madan Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said, “The Government is working towards designing a transport system that ensures sustainable and smart mobility. As part of it, we have made a study report to develop 150 km network of metro rail and 120 km network of mono rail in the MMR region.” Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd CEO Abhay Mishra underlined that public transit system should be economical, environment friendly and save time. He said, “The Metro has brought a revolution in the transport system in the city.” He added, “The Government has to adopt transit oriented planning by redesigning roads considering walking aspect, stricter parking norms, eliminating road side hawkers and unauthorized construc-
BMC proposes ‘water for all’, Sena still does not agree By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in order to prevent water theft and illegal supply; has decided to give new connections in slum areas which have come up after the year 2000, which will help generate more revenue for the corporation. The process for the same is nearing completion and a proposal is expected to be tabled in the standing committee in the next 15 days. A senior civic official said, “We may charge more for these connections. Providing water to all the slum dwellers will prevent water theft, illegal supply, leakages, contamination of water which is the root cause for the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria.” Presently the city has 3.7 lakh legal water connections, of which two lakh are in slums and the rest are connected to private societies,
commercial establishments and industrial units. The state government had regularised slums that came up before January 1, 2000. After this, last year, BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte had sent a letter to the state’s Urban Development department, seeking permission to give authorised connections to the slum dwellers. After which the civic officials started working on a plan to give water connections to slums, which have come up after the year 2000. The civic administration had given water supply to slums which had come up before January 1,1995. But, more than a thousand slums came up after 2000 in the city and the civic authority was not supplying water. “A lot of people created illegal connections and the water mafia began to thrive. These illegal connections are also responsible for contamination of water,” added the official.
Shiv Sena's objection
Earlier this month, expressing the fear that it would lead to rise in illegal slums, Shiv Sena – the ruling party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – had turned down civic administration’s proposal to provide water connections to all slums in the city.Sena had vehemently opposed the proposal. “If we give water connections to all people, we have to provide even for people living on roads and pavements. We may have to provide water bills, which in future can be misused by illegal slum dwellers,” said civic standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse.‘Water for everyone’ system would put a tremendous burden on the water distribution network in the city. Hence, the civic administration was asked to prepare a comprehensive scheme to prevent water leakages and to ensure safety of water mains.
Water bills coming soon on SMS and email
In an attempt to rectify the delay in delivery of water bills, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to send the bills to consumers by email and SMS. A call centre facility is also being planned to address grievances. The civic administration has collected around 40,000 email addresses of consumers. A senior civic official from the hydrualic department said, “The consumers can register their email ids and contact numbers when they go to the local ward offices to pay their water bills at the Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC) or with the office of the hydraulic engineer.” The civic body also plans to send SMS alerts to inform consumers when the bills will be sent.
tions. Lastly, the long term metro rail project needs to be supported with intermediate plans for expansion of suburban railways, buses, etc.” Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd former Chairman Rakesh Saksena said, “Huge and uncontrolled flux is entering the city every day. The city has to focus on continuous capacity creation to meet the demand-supply gap. A comprehensive roll-out of metro rail, mono rail and suburban trains is required. For the same, political and bureaucratic ownership of the projects and sustained government funding is the need of the hour.” TERI organised a Regional Dialogue titled, 'Sustainable Urban Transport and Solid Waste Management in Mumbai.' The dialogue was organised in the run up to TERI's annual flagship event, the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS).

Sahib, Bibi, Nawab: Baluchar silks of Bengal 1750-1900 Elegant Indian women smoke hookahs. Nawabs relax with pet falcons. British soldiers stand by cannons. Sahibs and memsahibs enjoy the comforts of steampowered trains and boats. These extraordinary motifs on the anchals (pallus) of Baluchar silks are like woven archives of the 18th and 19th century Bengal. Displayed in the Curator’s Gallery of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya are 23 masterpieces of Baluchar silks from the TAPI Collection, Surat out of its holding of 68 Baluchar silks in its collection – the largest single repository of this group of textiles. These extraordinary handwoven silks were made in Murshidabad, during a time when the city was the prosperous, cosmopolitan capital of the Nawabs of Bengal. They continued to be woven after the emergence and consolidation of British rule over the province, until the end of the 19th century. Baluchar silks were luxury textiles. They are unique in that they employ no zari, achieving their glowing effects through the use of indigenous mulberry silk. Unlike any other Indian
textile genre, the Baluchar designs go beyond the purely decorative. They capture a period of political, economic and social transformation, drawing inspiration from the lifestyles (real or imagined) of the native and European elite. The exhibition is accompanied by the first major fully researched publication on Baluchar Silks of Bengal authored by EvaMarie Rakob, Shilpa Shah and Tulsi Vatsal. Richly illustrated, the catalogue describes how these rare works of art were created,
who wove them, who wore them, why the tradition died, and how its unique legacy continues to inspire contemporary Indian textile design. Not since Lady Ranu Mukherji’s exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata way back in 1961 has there been a major Exhibition on the subject of Baluchar butedar silks held anywhere.
Scapegoats arrested
In June last year, three goats were caught and detained by the Chennai police after they allegedly vandalised a new police patrol vehicle. The trio were held as "scapegoats" for the crime which reportedly involved a dozen
of their tribe trampling over their car – the latest example of anti-social behaviour. Police said the goats had a record of damaging vehicles of residents, but had "crossed the line" with an attack on a two-day-old patrol vehicle, a maroon Innova. According to the complaint, about 12 goats dented the vehicle when they climbed on top of it, and damaged the wipers and glass, and scratched the paint of the bonnet and body. Police however found only three goats in their subsequent inquiries. They were taken to the police station and an inquiry about the owner was made. We're
unclear if the inquiry was made with the goats. Their owner faces charges of negligent conduct of her animals, which were later handed over to the Society for the Protection of Animals.
Elasticated under-pants! An article recently appeared on the website of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army saying that the Chinese soldiers’ underpants were now equipped with elasticated – only in the 21st century. Until recently, the article says, an infantryman would “have to worry about the rope of his big underpants, which would loosen suddenly but could never be untied when he wanted to answer
the call of nature.” The piece says that Chinese military planners pay more attention to aircraft carriers and satellite-killer rockets than they do to their foot soldiers. Chinese infantrymen have a tradition of stripped-down fighting that dates back to the days when the Communist Party was fighting a guerrilla war before the revolution. Money is no longer scarce, but Beijing is still not spending much on its lowly grunts. The battlefield equipment that the average Chinese fighter wears would cost the equivalent of 'two entry level iPhone6s,’ the article states. His American counterpart would be carrying gear worth 10 times that, the equivalent of ‘a mid-level car’.

early a year after it issued a work order in this regard, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally started cleaning Girgaum Chowpatty using a modern machine. Imported from Germany, the machine is being used to clean nearly half of the 2.25 km-long shore as part of the corporation’s seven-year plan to maintain the beach. The Rs 3.76 crore contract was issued in November last year. Much to the convenience of the BMC, the corporation is now able to clean 1.25 lakh sq m areas within just four hours, officials informed. The corporation has been using the machine round the clock in three shifts throughout the week, barring few hours when the sea shore is crowded. The BMC has also deployed 12 personnel to maintain the beach in two shifts

The machine has six-inch blades, which can dig into sand layers, throwing up suppressed waste. “Once the layer is dug, the waste is filtered through a net fitted in the New Beach cleaning machine at Chowpatty machine. chools across Maharashtra are likely to be closed today as the State Education Minister Vinod Tawde has refused to consider the demands of the teachers and the non-teaching staff to stay the controversial government resolution over the surplus teachers and nonteaching staff in Maharashtra. All the seven Members of the Legislative Council from the teachers constituencies met the Education Minister, who refused to stay the GR and to reconsider the cases of un-
aided schools. Tawde stated that he will be declaring his decision on the GR within a few days. After this, the Federation of Schools Education Trustees called upon the nonteaching staff, headmasters, and teachers to declare a 'Bandh' today. “The school education minister refused to stay the government resolution of 45,000 surplus teachers and taking away the right of students and reducing the number of posts in non-teaching staff. The schools education minister is behaving highly arbitrarily, said MLC Kapil Patil.

MU vice-chancellor not qualified: HC By Philip Varghese
I
n a set-back for the Mumbai University vice-chancellor, Dr. Rajan Welukar, the Bombay High Court on Thursday ruled that there was non-application of mind by the search committee with regard to his fulfilling essential criteria for selection. A division bench of Justice P V Hardas and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai gave their verdict upon a reference made in May 2012 to decide whether the decision of the search committee to include Welukar's name in the list of eligible candidates suffers from nonapplication vis-a-vis the essential criteria – that five of his research publications are post PhD, published in international journals and used in higher education. In August 2011, a division bench gave a split verdict in this matter by differing on the research publications and subsequently a single judge could also not decide on it. Hence the reference was made to another
Dr. Rajan Welukar division bench. In their judgment, the bench said the search committee, a body of experts, abdicated its functions by accepting the claim of Welukar in his resume at face value without independently ascertaining whether the publications fulfilled the requirement and if he possessed the minimum requisite criteria. The bench said the High Court should, in its extraordinary jurisdiction, direct the search committee to reconsider the question of eligibility of Welukar. They have directed the matter to be placed before the original bench which made the reference so that it may pass further orders.

Raising the issue in the legislative Assembly yesterday, he stated that the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led government had canceled reservations on 55 acre plot of land in the interim plan. He added that the then government had allowed commercial use of the land belonging to the Airport Authority. Replying to the debate, Minister of State for Urban Development Dr Ranjit Patil stated that he would hold a meeting with the Chief Minister on the issue if the need arises. Regional Town planning (Amendments) Ordinance, 2014 he said that in big urban metros like Mumbai, there are many complex development issues and to take decisions on development plans and getting approvals for them takes very long time. The ordinance seeks to raise the current deadline of preparing Development Plans (DP) from 12 to 24 months. Alwani added that the lack of availability of experts also hampers preparations of development plans. Alwani stated that besides the delay in preparation of the development plan the implementation of it is also delayed. He demanded that the government check the feasibility of having a separate department for 'Implementation of Development Plan'. He also recommended creation of a body of experts for restructuring of development plans after every 20 years.

Gang of thieves from MP strike at RPF woman cop found dead in Mira Rd marriages, other functions in city A Afternoon Despatch & Courier

A
gang of thieves from Madhya Pradesh is in Mumbai and their targets are wedding parties. There were robberies at two weddings in a single day. The first took place in Andheri while the other was in Oshiwara. Modus operandi of the gang is – a small boy would steal a bag while a 16-yearold girl used to keep a watch. Both the incidents were captured on CCTV cameras. The thieves are from Village from Jatkhedi village in Madhya Pradesh. On November 30, two teenagers targeted two marriages, first at Andheri Recreational Club and other at Maheshwari Hall, Oshiwara. The teenagers struck at the recreational club first where they committed the whole crime in 25 minutes. The 16-year-old girl keeps proper watch. She recces the whole area, the 13 year-old boy does the robbing. The boy goes up to the stage and plays with other kids. He then flicks the briefcase which has
the money and then leaves the place with the girl. They left the marriage hall at1.43 pm. Few hours later the kids reached Maheshwari hall in Oshiwara. Praful Haldankar – it was his relative’s marriage – said, “The kids entered the hall around 4 pm. The girl stayed down while the boy was playing with kids on the stage. How can we doubt a small kid who is playing with children in a marriage function?” Haldankar added, “My son was taking care of the briefcase. A photo session was going on below and everyone had gathered there. When I started looking for the briefcase, it was missing. It contained cash, gold and so many valuables. The girl directed the boy when to strike, she walked ahead and the boy followed. The kids were perfectly trained.” The case at Andheri has been registered with DN Nagar police and the theft at Maheshwari hall is registered at Oshiwara police station. Senior police inspector Ra-
jendra Chavan of DN Nagar police station said, “The kids struck at the recreational club during a marriage function. The case is now detected as they are the same kids arrested in Kandivali. We are taking permission from the court to take custody of the accused.” The cops in Mumbai are on high alert after many village dwellers of Jatkhedi in MP entered the city to steal at weddings. Police believe more than 50 people have spread out in different parts of Mumbai to target ongoing functions during the city’s peak wedding season. The parents of the kids sell toys outside the marriage function and also keep an eye as the kids do the robbing inside the halls. These people are roaming in different areas in Mumbai. They have divided the areas among themselves and are responsible for many robberies from functions in the last month. Mumbai police is on high alert and are regularly attending weddings in civil clothes to nab the robbers.

he Mumbai Working Group on Juvenile Justice took a stand against reducing the age of a juvenile from 18 years to 16 years, and addressed a press conference on Thursday. Dr Mohua Nigudkar said, “Juvenile crimes doesn't help anybody, not the victim, not society and not even the accused himself. Talking about the juvenile justice system, juveniles are divided into two categories – children in need of care and protection and the second category is juve-

A
65-year-old woman in Thane was found brutally murdered and flung off her third floor apartment at Wagle Estate. A case has been registered at the Wagle Estate police station and one person has been arrested. According to the police, the incident was reported as a suicide. But on further investigation, it was found that the woman was murdered and thrown off the building.
At about 8 am on Tuesday, the Wagle police got information about the body. They reached the crime scene and transferred the body to a civic hospital. On further investigation, the police found blood spots on the ground and other clues which indicate that the body was thrown off the building. When the police inquired with witnesses, they said the body had fallen off the third floor. “At first the case appeared
to be a suicide, but on further investigation, we found that the woman was bludgeoned to death and then her body was thrown off the third floor of the dilapidated building. We have arrested Deepak Pande (24), who has confessed to the crime. We are investigating further to find the identity of the victim and the reason behind the murder, said N Sakpal, sub-inspector at Wagle Estate police station.
MCZMA directs probe into wetland reclamation of Chena creek T
he Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has directed the authorities, including the municipal commissioner, to probe the massive reclamation of wetlands on both the sides of the fly-over-bridge on the Chena Creek, along the ThaneGhodbunder Road. The MCZMA has directed the District Collector and civic authorities to investigate the matter and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) at the earliest. The action followed after social activist Saji I P registered a complaint about rampant dumping of debris and rubble on the embankments of the creek which has posed a serious environmental threat to the region. The Afternoon Despatch & Courier had also highlighted (ADC, Sept 4, 2014, 'Natural course of Chena river under attack') the issue. “The illegal construction mafia has brazenly narrowed the river bed which has not only raised a serious possibility of flood water entering
residential settlements leading to loss of lives and property, but has also posed an immediate threat to the bridge running over the creek, alleged Saji, who with the intervention of the MCZMA, is now hopeful of action against the offenders. It has been alleged that the civic authorities turned a blind eye to the illegal reclamation activities at the behest of the local construction
mafia. The problem is rife in other areas, as in an attempt to reclaim land, huge quantities of debris are being offloaded in and around eco-sensitive zones of Kashimira and Uttan. It should be noted that the Chena river is also considered an important water source for wildlife species from the nearby forest zone, especially during the summer season.

and by reducing the juvenile age by two years, these two years of child transformation should not be snatched. No child is a born criminal and transformation is possible. Talking about the percentage of juvenile crimes, advocate Maharukh Adenwalla said, “During 2012-13, the total percentage of juvenile crime was just 1.1 per cent of the total crime. And out of
that 1.1 per cent only 9 per cent were cases of rape and murder. It will be not fair to the children to put them behind bars on the basis of such a small figure. The Mumbai Working Group firmly op-

Jammu & Kashmir’s election: Hope eclipses desperation

Ponder awhile… “Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt
BJP hijacks the broom from AAP
AM Admi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal appears to be a desperate man A today. He is no longer able to get peo-
ple to follow him. He and workers of his party carried brooms and swept some streets in Delhi. That created quite a good impression. Carrying the broom and sweeping the city, they created quite a sensation. Mr. Narendra Modi seems to have hijacked the broom from them. His party workers are now doing the clean-up work. Mr. Modi has nominated some leaders to do the dirty work. Salman Khan must have done it to get a picture of himself in the ppapers. He has also entrusted the work to a few prominent of leaders including politicians. There is definitely some sweeping activity across the country. So if Kejriwal and his party leaders carry brooms, they are not likely to make any impression. The BJP leaders will compete with them and may succeed. The fact is his party has lost lot of ground since it took part in the Delhi assembly elections. He continues however to try crowd-pulling strategies. The rape of a girl in an Uber taxi gave him the chance to try and get public attention. The workers of the BJP and the AAP have clashed in Delhi. It looks like Kejriwal will get a big shock if he contests assembly elections if and when held. It would be unrealistic to suggest that Modi magic will not work in Delhi. Chances are both Congress and AAP will be trounced if elections are held in Delhi.

HE ongoing electoral test in 'Jammu and Kashmir', which would determine the formation of a new state administration, is also, in a way, a testimony to the continuing and accelerating popularity of India’s parliamentary democracy in a state within India, which is often the subject of reportage and speculation for the outbreak of incendiary circumstances than for stability and progress. The political disequilibrium has been intermittent in Kashmir Valley, forming the bulk of the state, than in regions constituting Jammu, conspicuous for its socio-political equilibrium. The people of Kashmir have participated enthusiastically than before in the completed three phases of the current election, despite an outrageous terrorist attack, which was quelled admirably by the Indian army, and are scheduled to vote in the election’s upcoming fourth phase. It narrates a tale of resoluteness, even in the face of adversity, to be eager participants in the democratic process.
J&K’s ‘Special Status’ Kashmir acceded to India after being freed of Pakistan-sponsored tribal raiders from twothirds of its territory by the Indian army; the remaining portion is subjected to Pakistan’s jurisdiction. India-administered Kashmir was granted 'Special Status', and Indians from the rest of the country were subjected to restrictions as regards Kashmir. Consequently, notions of separate identity engendered, despite official Indian nationality, among the people of Kashmir. These two acts were probably the root causes determining Indian ordeal in Kashmir, subsequently. Kashmir, since 1947, has received dollops of aid from the Government of India with the stated intention of bringing relief and development for its people. These resources were channelized through the state’s governments, which have been bywords, more frequently than less, for corruption, nepotism, vainglory, and arrogance, with varying degrees of intensity for respective political dispensations ruling the state. In the 1960s the state’s people pined for

better surveillance by the central government; the 1970s were relatively stable and peaceful; 1980s witnessed strange political dynamics between Srinagar and New Delhi: an unpleasant election in 1983, sacking Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s 'National Conference' ministry in 1984 at Indira Gandhi’s behest, an ironic alliance between Farooq Abdullah and Rajiv Gandhi in 1986 precipitating disgruntlements among the people of Kashmir, who viewed it as Mr. Abdullah’s political treachery with them. Additionally, prolonged unemployment, miserable economic conditions of most people, and continuing administrative high-handedness in the state steadily drove the people across the edge of their endurance. The political volcano erupted in the spring of 1990, when organized armed groups, with the abundant support and sympathy of most Kashmiris and with training from camps in Pakistan, declared rebellion against the state government and the Indian state, forcibly ejected Kashmir’s Pandit community from their ancestral dwellings, and aspired and fought for independence from the Indian union. The harrowing narrative for the last 25 years has been marred by killings, infightings, and social instability, interspersed by hopes for peace, stability, and communal harmony; state elections have been held again, with six year interregnums, from 1996. This year’s elections, notwithstanding the continued tensions and uncertainties, is gradually bringing stability, prosperity, economic opportunity, and better governance to the forefront of people’s yearnings and utterances. The current election’s dynamics is a pointer to a potential crystallization of the realization among many people in Kashmir and its political leaders that armed insurgency would defeat the very purpose of securing a dignified and stable livelihood. The freedoms and opportunities possible by an embrace of the attributes of the Indian constitution far outweigh the effects of extremism. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), hoping for notable electoral gains in Jammu & Kashmir, is endeavouring to further permeate this comprehension through a message entailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stated inten-

VERY aspect in this world is an expression of consciousness. Everything in this world is dynamic. Even the mountain is not static. Every atom is dynamic in nature. They all undergo certain stages of evolution. The entire creation is made up of five elements and ten sense organs — five organs of perception and five organs of action. This entire creation is there to give you pleasure and relief. Whatever gives you pleasure should also give you relief. Otherwise the very pleasure becomes pain. Let me give you an example: you like apple pie, but five of it at one time may be a little too much for you. The same thing which gave you pleasure will now make you suffer. The entire creation gives you pleasure and liberation. You have to get yourself liberated from all these at some point of time or else pleasure become pain. Though this world does not exist for one who is enlightened like the way it exists for the one who is not enlightened, the world continues to exist with its opposites. For one who has awakened in knowledge there is no more suffering for him. The world appears completely different. For him, every inch of this creation is filled with bliss or part
of the Self. But for others it exists as they see it. Your body is made up of three gunas — Satva, Rajas & Tamas — and your thoughts and behaviour patterns change accordingly. Tamas creates more dullness, sleep, lethargy and Rajas creates restlessness, desires and anguish. When the mind is domi-
MATTER & SPIRIT nated by Satva, it is joyful, alert and enthusiastic. When these three gunas act in your body according to their nature, all these different qualities dominate. Observe the tendencies that come up in you and don’t think that you are those tendencies. There is a story... There was a great monk, who lived in the Himalayas. He had free access anywhere he went. People loved him and welcomed him. Everyday, this monk went to the king’s palace to have lunch. And the queen would serve him lunch in a golden plate and cup. He would eat and walk away. Once, after his meal, he just grabbed a silver glass and a golden spoon and walked
tion to lift all regions of India from the remnants of the morass of backwardness and social and economic stagnation. People seem to realize more that their hope and desires could be achieved by the ballot box and not bullets, although some opinions to the contrary continue to persist.
Germinating hopes Prime Minister Modi’s speech in the Sher-eKashmir Stadium in Srinagar emphasized on germinating hopes among people; Modi articulated that he would leave no stone unturned to ensure a future where, economic opportunities, constructive work and social security, would be the parameters of livelihood. Perhaps on cue, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, the president of the J&K's Peoples Democratic Party, through respective political campaigns, are increasingly trying to draw the people’s attention more towards peace and prosperity than bizarre issues of 'Kashmiri identity' and wariness of the perceived insidious designs of the Indian government to subdue the people of Kashmir. Kashmir has been subjected to abounding misery, pain, and sufferings for the past several decades. The natural beauty of the place and aesthetic consciousness of its people have been sullied by the stains of blood and rising smoke from gunfire and bombs. This election is probably the first stage of the process to try to rectify the accumulated dissatisfactions. The third phase of the polls, held in regions which bore the brunt of last week’s terrorist attack, have admirably recorded six per cent more voter turnout in the same constituencies relative to that in 2008. The political union of Kashmir with India was accomplished long ago, but the emotional union is largely yet to be completed. The path ahead is fraught with opportunities and challenges. Whatever the outcome of the elections and whoever forms the next government later in December would do well, with cooperation from New Delhi, to seize the moment to nurture opportunities to overcome challenges. That would be expedient for both Kashmir and India. away with it. He didn’t even tell anyone that he wanted them. People in the palace were surprised. ‘‘What happened to the monk? He has never taken anything like that, what has happened today, that too without telling anybody?’’ they wondered. Three days later he brought the things back. This was even more puzzling. The king called all the wise people to analyse the monk’s behaviour. The pundits and the wise men investigated to find out what was fed to the monk that day. They found out that it was some food which was confiscated from some robbers/dacoits, that was cooked and served to the monk and that had made him rob! So, to eliminate the root cause of pain, a definite understanding is essential. Body, mind and the whole world are undergoing changes all the time. The entire universe is in the form of fluidity. The definite knowledge is, ‘I am not the body, I’m the Self, I’m the space, I’m the imperishable, untouched, untainted by this world around me. Every particle in this body is changing and the mind is changing too’. This definite knowledge is the only way to come out of this cycle. — Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Twitter @SriSri www.artofliving.org

Nobel Prize for a noble cause WHAT a day for India and Pakistan! I was particularly touched by Malala's speech. She said this recognition should be eyeopener to the so-called politicians and military heads. We should all feel proud to know about these two great human beings, Malala and Satyarthi. The world recognises their selfless-services. Showing great personal courage, Kailash Satyarthi, maintaining Gandhi’s tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights. Despite her youth, Malala Yousafzai has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations. This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. This is a stepping stone to improve the Indo-Pakistan relations and a good beginning can be initiated by honouring the joint winners in the Indian subcontinent.

QUOTE:
THE BJP leaders, before coming to power at the Centre, were speaking with different voices on important issues of national interests. Now even after being voted to run the country's administrative office, their top echelon in the government continues to have diametrically opposite views on sensitive issues, the latest one being the Uber Taxi matter. One cabinet minister wants the cab service banned in the country; whereas his colleague in the government does not think so. Such developments lead to confusion in the minds of the general public and they only serve to harm the Party's image. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

ILLOGIGICAL LOGIC: If banning the radio taxis is a “logical” solution to stop rapes here are a few more such suggestions – girls should carry rakhis (remember the advice of the great Asaram after the Nirbhaya case?) and tie one to the driver before entering the cab; girls are also advised to carry masks of either Kiran Bedi, Mamta Banerjee or Mayawati and wear it before hiring the cab.
Now that the list of logical solutions has been updated let us look at some “illogical” options too: compulsory self defence training for every girl child. BPT act of 1950, the Trust had registered itself in the offices of the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai with all its properties, including CS 400 (Mazgaon Division) in the year 1952 along with all its properties. The under-lessee Her Highness Maharani Meneka Raje of Dewas (Junior) assigned the property to Ajit Kumar Singh Kasliwal and Rajender Kumar Singh Kasliwal in the year 1975 till August 11, 2002.” The petition further said, “The sub-lease of 1927 expired on August 21, 2002, the under-lease of 1946 and the assignment of 1975 had all expired on August 11, 2002. The Government of Maharashtra in the Official Gazette of the year 2003 declared the property as a Wakf property. The Collector of Mumbai after confirmation from the Maharashtra State Board of Wakfs and as per the Government of Maharashtra Resolution of December 12, 2012 of lease renewal, invited the Muttawallies of the Persian Mosque for the renewal of lease, which was accepted by the HMH Shirazi (Persian Mosque) Charity Trust/Wakf, and were ready to pay the lease rent accordingly. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maharashtra State Board of Wakfs had issued a general newspaper notice informing the general public that CS 400 (Mazgaon Division) is a Wakf property and anybody dealing in this property in anyway Buy or Sell or Rent or Mortgage or Transfer shall be tried under the various section of the Wakf Acts(Civil & Criminal). The Central Wakf Council also informed and requested the Collector to kindly ex-
pedite the lease renewal process in regard to Wakf property. Ajit Kasliwal, who was an assignee (sublessee) of the above referred property and whose deed of assignment expired on August 11, 2002 submitted an application in the offices of the Collector and District Magistrate, praying to be heard before the lease is renewed in favour of the HMH Shirazi (Persian Mosque) Charity Trust/Wakf. Ajit Kasliwal's request was granted by the District Collector and Magistrate and the Collector decided to hold joint hearing from May 21, 2014 onwards. The hearing was held between May 21, 2014 till August 25, 2014.” Advocate Yasmeen Sheikh, representing the petitioner in the case said, “During the pendency of the proceedings, more particularly on August 4, 2014, Ajitkumar Kasliwal, Shiela Rani Rajendrakumar Kasliwal, Sushilkumar Kasliwal and Jayantkumar Rajendrakumar Kasliwal have executed a illegal registered deed of assignment in favour of M/s Huda Builders and Developers and sold 2,00,000 sq ft of government grant Wakf land for a throwaway price of Rs 4 crore. The Collector of Mumbai came to know about this illegal transaction after the hearing was over. The Collector of Mumbai in her report dated November 14, 2014 sent to the Principal Secretary (Pradhan Sachiv) Revenue and Forest Department noted that they have committed serious offence by cheating the Government, has recommended that FIR should be registered against them for cheating. We lodged a complaint with MRA Marg Police
Station and we also approached the Addl Commissioner of Police, South Region with our written submission, he immediately forwarded our complaint to his law officer and asked his view on our complaint. The Law officer of Addl CP, prepared and sent his report on November 6 to DCP Zone I and MRA Marg Police Station and was of the view that an FIR should be registered as it is a case of Cognizable offences. The MRA Marg Police sought the view of the Assistant Director and Public Prosecutor (Chief PP) and the Chief PP in his report has mentioned that a serious criminal offence has been committed and F.I.R should be registered. Despite all the views of the eminent government officials, the MRA Marg Police are not ready to lodge complaint against the wrong doers and have advised us to settle the matter with the Builders. The Investigation Officer told us that the report of the law officer and the Chief PP is not binding on him. He also told us that even if we approach higher authorities, nothing will be done as he is the Investigation Officer. According to the FSI available on this plot of land the net profit approximately is more than Rs 3,500 crore, due to this astronomical amount the tenants are being put under tremendous pressure from all quarters.” After hearing the matter on Thursday, the division bench comprising Justice Ranjit More and Justice Anuja Prabhudesai kept for compliance and has asked the Collector of Mumbai to file a reply in affidavit to this case on what action it will take on the issue. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

1,200 MBMC staffers dump Sharad Rao’s union, join Rayatraj By Suresh Golani
T
he battle for supremacy has now stormed into labour territory. In a major set-back to the Sharad Rao led-Municipal Labour Union (MLU), its entire organisational set-up in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) shifted their loyalties by joining the Rayatraj Kaamgaar Sanghatna (RKS). The formal induction took place at the main administrative building of the MBMC on Thursday in the presence of RKS, founder Chief Jayshri Khadilkar-Pandey and Gen Secretary Rohit Pandey. Office-bearers in the local MLU unit which had around 1,200 members under its belt were apparently disillusioned over the lack of interest shown by their senior leaders in resolving the worker’s issue. “We were left to fend for ourselves by our senior leaders for the
past couple of years and when our pleas for proper representations and mediations fell on deaf ears, we opted to join the RKS, which is a dedicated union uprightly standing up for the cause of employees,” said Govind Parab. As of now Ravindra Sanap will head the newly formed MBMC unit of RKS. There are 1,600 employees in the MBMC and the RKS will now top the list of unions boasting a 1,200 strong force of members followed by the Kamgaar Sena and Shramjeevi Sanghatana.

A UNIQUE CHILDREN’S CLUB
On Children’s Day this year, Yamini Walia attended a workshop organised by the newly launched Club Sproutz at L’Occitane Spa in Lower Parel. She tells you about her experience
C
lub Sproutz is an experiential, members-only club for children who are between 3 to 10-years-old. The club has partnered with top brands such as Tilt All Day, Hamleys, Canvas Laugh Club and Ristorante Prego. A joint effort by Aarti Chhabria, Ritesh Bafna and Poorvi Taparia, Club Sproutz aims to provide something new and relevant to children. The workshops organised by them are meant to engage children in activities that are unique, informative, affordable and beneficial for the entire family as well. The workshop that I attended took place on Children’s Day at L’Occitane Spa. The experience was aimed at rejuvenating and relaxing children and their mothers. So, the venue seemed perfect. It was an hour long session and basically intended to educate children about various subjects. First up, children were asked to meditate under the guidance of professionals for over 10 minutes. This was followed by a painting session, where they were asked to paint what they had dreamt about. The activity was rounded off by a story session. All these sessions were aimed at enhancing concentration levels. While the children were involved in their activity, mothers were treated to a 15-minute foot massage. With all the running around that mothers have to do every day, the foot massage was definitely a fitting treatment. Happy, well-informed children and relaxed mothers — it seemed like the perfect combination! Club Sproutz also has an upcycle project at Funville and the animal shelter visit activities lined up for the coming weeks, all of which sound very interesting. I was quite impressed by the workshop and the effort made by Club Sproutz to provide something new to children and their families. If you have children, hurry up and become a member of Club Sproutz to see what else they have on offer! delicious, sweet strawberry scent was wafting through the air, with a hint of freshness tossed in — it reminded me of watermelon juice . Or, wait... was that the robust, warm smell of freshly brewed coffee? A few months ago, I followed this heady mixture of scents to a small stall, hosted by two cheery girls who were eager, but not overtly pushy about their products. Expecting coffee and cupcakes, I realised that the sweet fragrances that I had followed like an eager puppy, were handmade products from Bliscent (read our interview in Woman’s World if you missed it yesterday!), which soon became a brand that I followed avidly on their festival trail throughout the city. There’s a slew of handmade products on offer around Mumbai, since everyone is jumping on the all-natural bandwagon, so products that claim to be all-natural are dime a dozen — and I’ve tried my fair share. However, up until now, I’ve always gone back to my trusty brands once the initial thrill of new products has worn off. The first thing you’re going to notice about Bliscent is their packaging — and the sweet smell emanating from anywhere that their products are stored. Some may find it a little too strong, but for me, walking around with a cloth bag with a faint coffee, strawberry and lemon scent was the most delightful thing in the world. The glass bottles require a careful hand, but the sugar crystals in the body polish look so much more impressive in them. Unfortunately, ordering from them is a little tougher than it should be, but their website will make it easier. For now, stick to calling them up for orders and traipse around the city to find their next stall (which will be at The Lil Flea this month) if you want to soak up the delicious treats that they whip up. I went gaga over the Strawberry and Coffee body polish (`220), and then my eyes fell on the attractively packaged Lemon Sorbet (`220) and Coffee Bean soap (`220), which smells like a freshly brewed pot of java. If you’re worried about smelling like coffee throughout the day, don’t be. Neither the body polish nor the soap will leave a stale, lingering coffee bean scent on your skin. Instead, there will be wafts of subtle, freshly brewed coffee following you around. The Peppermint Foot Soak (`180) is another favourite, as are the lip butters, all for `220. From Raspberry and Hot Chocolate to Watermelon (which happens to be my favourite), the products are not only delightfully scented, they are also really moisturising. The same can be said for the heavily berry scented Body Frosting cream (`180), which is like scooping a creamy mousse out of the plastic pot. Several brands offer the same delicious treats, in similar delightful packaging — so what’s all the fuss about Bliscent for?
Where www.bliscent.com and www.facebook.com/bliscent Contact 9819293388, 9920576495 or email bliscent@gmail.com Where they win by a landslide, are their incredibly affordable prices, and the fact that their products really do what they promise to — from moisturising your skin to helping you smell great all-day long. They’ve also introduced a new Candy Cane flavoured soap in the spirit of Christmas — it’s definitely next on my list of products to try out. The body product brand also has hampers on offer every season, so if you’re looking for Christmas gifts, these are prefect. For `500 you will get a frosting, soak and lip butter in an attractive package. All they need now is to perfect their website!
OF SPARKLES & TRINKETS
All that glitters might not be gold, but sometimes, it’s even better! Sara Shah tells you how Shazé does fashion jewellery better than most other brands
W
hen I was invited to visit Shazé, situated at Hughes Road, I wasn’t thrilled. I’ve visited my fair share of fashion jewellery stores, only to come out disappointed, since most of them house jewellery that is just ordinary, bearing exorbitant price tags. With all my built-up skepticism, I stepped in to the store, only to be proven wrong. Shazé is spacious and brightly lit, with two showcase tables in the centre and white shelves lining the walls. They’re laden with gold and platinum plated jewellery, some of which is embellished with zircona stones that sparkle under the overhead focus lights. The refreshing, edgy orange and white walls caught my eye as soon as I walked in. Although it boasts of some exquisite, contemporary designs, I was told that Shazé targets women who are over 25-years-old, as they believe that while most brands
design jewellery for younger women, very few actually pay attention to the transitioning tastes of women in their late 20’s. The reason they don’t sell solid gold pieces is a valid one — it’s not practical for women to travel to far off destinations for special occasions while wearing or carrying heavy gold jewellery. But, all their pieces were as beautiful as precious jewellery and I couldn’t help but stand still for a while to
admire my favourites. Shazé also specialises in gift items, perfumes and accessories for men. I thought the ceramic bulldog sculptures (`18,000), available in a variety of colours, were delightfully quirky. I even liked their perfumes, with their musky, woody scents, which I was told would last longer than most. And, they were right, because I did recall a whiff catching me offguard, hours later. It’s safe to say that my visit to Shazé was a happy one. Their products are edgy and gorgeous and I’d even go so far as to say that there was not a single piece that I didn’t like. Their prices start from as low as `1,500, which is reasonable for plated jewellery. In my opinion, the store has something for everyone, and is definitely worth a visit. THE CHEF IS IN! W hen it comes to cooking, our team is quite a mixed bag. For some of us, working through the day makes it difficult to whip up a decent meal every night and so, we resort to ordering in, which eventually gets dull and boring. For others, proportioning the ingredients is our Achilles heel. There are a few of us however, for whom cooking is a delightful prospect, and pretty easy to get the hang of. With such a medley of cooking styles and preferences, we decided that we each needed to try making a meal from newly introduced meal service iChef, to see how it fares with different types of cooks. The idea behind iChef is a meal in a bag. Everything is pre-measured and delivered in precise quantities, so that you can actually enjoy cooking for yourself. Also, its low calorie count and price (`250 for a meal that serves two), is an added bonus. They give you the opportunity to eat a gourmet meal, as well as make it yourself, all the while being assured of its health quotient. Also, iChef makes cooking after a long day at work an enjoyable process instead of a boring chore, and the premeasured ingredients (especially the sauces), mean that you don’t have to buy entire bottles of exotic sauces and spices — which can be expensive — just to cook a single meal. So, we rolled out the idiot-proof recipes (the instructions are very detailed) and each began to make the two dishes that we were sent.
Dish #1: Tofu fAjiTAs WiTh guACAMole Most of us are big fans of guacamole, so this

was an exciting recipe to try. It’s a little more time consuming than some of the other meals on their menu, because it involves cleaning and chopping several vegetables, although most of the guacamole comes pre-prepared (with puréed avocados) and the recipe is very easy to follow. However, beware while cooking the tofu, they don’t mention how easily it breaks — so while our seasoned cooks had no trouble with this one, there was a tedious clean-up process involved for one of us! The dish was extremely appetising, with a really

When the 48hrs Team heard of iChef, we were elated. But, did the new concept really make cooking that much simpler for us? We tested it out and bring you the results

houx pastry is a popular French delicacy, but have you heard of choux buns? Neither had I, till I tried them at Bun Men. Each offering is a bun-shaped disc of dough, the size of a regular doughnut. Located near Mad Over Donuts at Breach Candy, Bun Men is relatively easy to locate. It’s a small dessert stall that you will notice as soon as you enter Snowman’s. good balance of tart and spicy flavours. It’s also quite filling and one bag of ingredients is more than enough for two people.
Dish #2: Kung PAo ChiCKen TACos The Kung Pao Chicken Tacos recipe was easy to understand as well as to prepare. You might need basic knowledge about how to handle raw meat and season food, but apart from that, as long as you follow the instructions to the T, you won’t go wrong. It’s easy, but it’s not
around 4pm. The buns are then heated in an oven and infused with different, flavoured cream. So, it’s safe to say that they’re fresh, and of good quality. Like their innovative concept, the name of each bun is also interesting, including options such as The Dark Lord, Berry Me Bananas, Hazel’s Nuts, Crazee Caramel, Pista-la-Vista Baby and Red-ICulous. Out of all their delectable flavours, I first tried The Dark Lord (`60), which was filled with dark chocolate. While the filling and the choux dough were both perfect, the flavour didn’t impress me much. When you order a dark chocolate dessert, you expect it to be a little less sweet than this one was. If you are a fan of red velvet, don’t leave Bun Men without trying Red-I-Culous (`70), a red bun filled with tangy cream cheese. The filling oozed out of the soft choux buns, making it a delectable treat. My favourites included Hazel’s Nuts (`70) and Crazee Caramel (`70), which were mind-numbingly delicious. While the former was pumped with hazelnuts and chocolate, the latter was filled with salted caramel. However, if I had to choose between the two, I would opt for the latter, because salted caramel is currently my favourite flavour. But, if you like strawberries and bananas, then their popular Berry Me Bananas (`60) is a good option. I detest strawberries, so I couldn’t convince myself to try it. Even though some of the flavours were misses, I liked the choux buns at Bun Men enough to recommend the place, especially if you’re tired of the age-old doughnut desserts and are looking to try something new. scroll, bearing instructions and pictures to make cooking a simpler process. While most of us had no problems following the instructions, we assume that the pictures will help those who are beginners in the kitchen. Taste: While most of us were fans of the chicken, the Fajitas scored higher on our taste test, mostly because Kung Pao sauce can get a little too salty if you follow the recipe to the T. So, do a taste test and adjust it accordingly. The guacamole was fresh and delicious, though the addition of silken tofu would have made the fajitas an all-round favourite. The freshness of the ingredients enhanced the taste of both dishes, making them winners for us. The bottom line: Would we recommend iChef to someone who has never stepped into a kitchen? Probably not. But if you live alone, are looking for a hassle-free, homemade meal or want to start learning how to cook, iChef is a great option. They also have other options such as Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Pesto Pasta, Lamb Sliders, Chicken Teriyaki and Risotto with spinach-basil pesto, which we can’t wait to try out! Where www.ichef.in

ulldogs is a tiny place, with space for just 20-25 people. The décor (and menu) is inspired by popular TV shows, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. So, expect drinks such as Cercei’s Sangria (`471) and Heisenberg’s Blue Sky (`301). I started off with the latter, but was disappointed by its syrupy taste. I continued with the Mojito (`291), which I loved for its refreshing, well-balanced flavours. To accompany our drinks, we ordered Bacon Bad (`101), High Potato and Home Grown Mushrooms — Next to the Weed Pot (a mushroom and potato slider; `91), Run!! It’s a Lamb Slide (a lamb slider; `101) Chicken Sah-tay (`271) and Jalapeno Poppers (`151). The mushroom and potato slider had a succulent patty, while the lamb slider was filling and value-for-money. The chicken satay was a bit dry, but the jalapeno poppers were pieces of cheesy, juicy, spicy heaven. However, the best dish was the Bacon Bad — strips of crisp, fried bacon between slider buns, with BBQ sauce. Full of bacon goodness, it’s a dish that I couldn’t get enough of. Overall, Bulldogs is an interesting addition to Andheri’s rapidly expanding landscape of pubs and bars. But, its fantastic, affordable prices are what set it apart. hen someone suggests taking a trip to Europe, in all likelihood, they are talking about popular destinations such as Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Unfortunately, Austria remains hidden in the shadows of its ever-so-popular neighbours. It may be known more being the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, but the landlocked country has a lot more to offer. It’s lush green and boasts of beautiful architecture, making it a destination that definitely deserves a spot on your bucket list.
Just like on FilM
Market Frenzy If you’ve been to Switzerland, you will know that most cities in this region are surrounded by the Alps, with hilly terrain. But, if you want to skip Switzerland and still experience the enveloping hills around it, Austria is the place to visit. We spent a day in Zurich, before making our way to Vienna. After the long travel, we checked into our hotel and indulged in some much-needed rest, before walking down to Nasch Market — a popular, touristfriendly flea market. Here, you will find a staggering variety of fresh produce, spices, nuts and cheese. It was a delight to see how spotless the vendors keep their displays, as I am usually wary of buying street food in a foreign country. Colourful kiosks sold gifts and souvenirs ranging from scarves and tea sets, to cutlery sets. However, what really grabs your attention are the numerous fresh produce stalls littering the market. One of the shops that caught me eye in particular was a store selling vinegar that was made from unusual ingredients such as tomatoes, strawberries and cinnamon. I did consider trying at least one type, but my sceptical tastebuds got the better of me. After all, vinegar can be appalling to consume on by itself, irrespective of what flavour it might be. Leaving the store and it’s pungent smells behind, we walked to the great Sucession Building, situated at one end of Nasch Market. White, with a gorgeous, golden dome at the top, I was told that the building was designed according to Jugendstil architecture — a style that was popular from 1890 to 1910. We also visited Majolica House, at the other end of Nasch Market, which was adorned with weather-proof, colourful ceramic flowers that decorated its façade. After spending a few hours at Nasch Market, we took a short
walk up to Kettenbruckke, the U-Bahn Station, where we purchased our 72hrs Vienna card. This card allowed us to travel through the city using multiple modes of transport, as many times as we needed to, and also helped us get discounts at various tourist spots as well. When in Vienna, it is best to travel by rail, as it offers good connectivity and will treat you to picturesque landscapes on the way. Vienna is also great for pub-hopping and has some great restaurants for wine tasting. We visited the Karntner Strause Pub for some beer and tasted a variety of different wines at the Augustiner Keller Pub. Finally, we made a stop at the Fashion Pub before calling it a night. After spending the night in drunken revelry, we woke up groggy, but excited to soak in some more sightseeing. Our first stop was the Belvedere Palace, which is popular with art lovers for its collection of artwork, which includes the popular painting, The Kiss, by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. This palace houses two smaller Baroque palaces (the Upper and Lower Belvedere). The buildings are set in Baroque Park, which is located in the third district of the city, and so, to get there, we took a tram from Wien Paulanergasse station to Schwarzenbergplatz, a small open street square, and then
After leaving the palace, we decided to rent a car and drive to the city of Salzburg. On the way, we saw the Mondsee church, which has been featured in several Austrian movies, and St.Gilen — a picturesque village. Both the church and the village are two spots that were pictured in the Sound of Music tour. Since we had been travelling for over two hours, we decided to take a short break at Mondsee Lake, and take in the amazing sights. Since it was nearing dusk, we had the opportunity to witness a beautiful sunset, while we sat there, soaking in the enchanting view. After watching the sun set across the horizon, we continued our journey to Salzburg. We checked in at the Villa Trapp ( the house of the Von Trapp family, made popular in the Sound of Music). This was my first time at a B&B, and it was a great experience. The house is extremely well-maintained and exudes an old-world charm. It amazed me to see artefacts from the 18th century kept in such a good condition! As we drove on, we took a quick look at the remaining spots that were covered by the Sound of Music tour — Leopoldskron Palace (where the family lived in the film), Hellbrunn Palace (featured in a few songs), the Nonnberg Convent (where Maria lived as a young novice) and Mirabel Gardens and Pegasus Fountain, where Maria was seen dancing with the children. In fact, Mirabel Palace is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Once we were done with our tour, we decided to visit Munich, to experience Oktoberfest. After some sightseeing and experiencing the Oktoberfest celebrations, we drove back to Vienna and indulged in some retail therapy at the City Centre. We spent the rest of the day and night bar hopping and celebrating our last night in this beautiful city, before flying back to Mumbai.

Round -the-clock shoot schedules can be quite strenuous for television actors but what keeps them going is the bond that they share with other members of the cast and that is pretty evident on the sets of Zee TV’s popular prime-time drama ‘KumKum Bhagya’. They follow a unique way to strengthen their bonding. Usually actors rush to their vanity vans or make-up rooms once their shot is done or if there is a break in the shoot but the actors of 'KumKum Bhagya', along with the help from the show’s production house, have put together a laid-back, lounging area in the garden outside the sets for everyone to sit together and spend quality time – which they refer to as the ‘KumKum Bhagya Lounge’.

Versatile and seasoned actor Rajesh Khera has done it all! The man who has won a million hearts for his role of a gay designer and transgender is now all set to don a new avatar of Betaal. The actor has been roped in to play the role of Betaal in Sony PAL’s 'Sinhasan Battisi'. Confirming the news, Khera said, “Yes, I am going to play the character of Betaal in 'Sinhasan Battisi'. I am a character actor. My forte is that I can be made to look like different. I have read Amar Chitra Katha as a child and it's going to be interesting. Also, the story of VikramBetaal has been told on television earlier when Arun Govil and Sajjan played the roles of Vikram and Betaal, respectively. But times have changed and they are going to treat the character differently. I think they are going to use a lot of prosthetics for my look.”

ndia's economic growth is expected to improve to 6.3% in 2016 with the country leading economic recovery in South Asia, according to a United Nations report. The UN World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 (WESP) report, launched at the United Nations yesterday, also said India is likely to make progress in implementing economic policy reforms and help provide support to business and consumer confidence. It said global economic growth is forecast to continue increasing over
the next two years, despite legacies from the financial crisis continuing to weigh on growth, and the emergence of new challenges, including geopolitical conflicts such as in Ukraine, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The global economy is expected to grow 3.1% in 2015 and 3.3% in 2016, compared with an estimated growth of 2.6% for 2014, when the pace of expansion has been moderate and uneven. It said India, which is estimated to record a 5.4% economic growth in 2014, will see GDP growth improving to 5.9% next year and 6.3% in 2016. Economic growth in South
Asia is also set to gradually pick up from an estimated 4.9% in 2014 to 5.4% in 2015 and 5.7% in 2016. "While the recovery will be led by India, which accounts for about 70% of regional output, other economies such as Bangladesh and Iran are also projected to see stronger growth in the forecast period," the report said. The about 6% growth projected for India in 2016 will be the highest since the 2008-2011 period when it had grown at about 7.3%. Economic growth had slowed to 4.7% in 2012. During 2014, East Asia, including China, managed to register relatively robust growth, while India led
South Asia to a moderate strengthening. Developing countries as a group are expected to grow at 4.8% in 2015 and 5.1% in 2016, up from the 4.3% estimated for 2014. The report added that along with robust external demand, growth is expected to be underpinned by a moderate strengthening of domestic consumption and investment as countries benefit from improved macroeconomic conditions."Several countries, notably India, are likely to make progress in implementing economic policy reforms, thus providing support to business and consumer confidence," it said. Consumer sentiment in a demand-driven economy such as India is crucial in assessing possible growth opportunities ahead of time. The current uptrend in the BCI is the culmination of factors such as improved governance, with a rise in revenue receipts and a steep decline in non-plan expenditure, coupled with improving trade statistics and increased productivity in the intermediate sector, including copper and aluminum. Also, after three long years, consumer sentiment, as measured by India’s consumer confidence tracker, the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index, seems to be recovering. Giving his views on the November number, Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief Economist, ZyFin Research, said, “Although a full-fledged state of growth is still a long-term view, the current signs of a steady recovery is necessary to infuse confidence among spenders and investors in India. Improving sentiment would help in injecting necessary momentum to boost the economic cycle.”
Average Salary Hikes To Be At 11% In 2015, Says Mercer By A Business Reporter
I
ndian companies are likely to keep average salary hikes muted at 11% in 2015, with medical life sciences sector expected to dole out the highest pay raise, says a survey by global consultancy Mercer. According to Mercer's 'Total Remuneration Survey', the actual salary increase across industries and career levels for 2014 stood at 10.6%. With an average salary increase likely to be at 11%, the projected pay hike for next year in medical life sciences sector is the highest (12%) and for the shared services and hi-tech industry it is lowest (10%). While the pay increases have been muted, a majority of companies have indicated aggressive recruitment activity in the next year on expectation of higher growth rate, the survey findings showed. The survey covered 700 organisations in the country across various industry sectors like medical life sciences, chemical, oil and gas, manufacturing and engineering, automobiles and auto components, shared services and hi-tech sector. "Overall, the current pay increase forecasts indicate that while business sentiment is positive, companies await the sentiment to turn into actual business results before taking aggressive pay actions," Mercer India Business Leader (Information Solutions) Shanthi Naresh said. "In industry context, the organisation and specific roles are continuing to drive reward decisions," he added. Even companies which are forecasted to dole out lower than average salary hike "are using their discretion to differentiate and reward high performers with slightly higher pay increases in order to aid retention," Naresh said.

Since there is just one major film, PK, coming up this year, 2014 has effectively ended as far as Hindi film releases are concerned. So it’s time for the annual wrap
S
tarting with the worst films of the year—the films from which much was expected and they turned out to be complete duds. Their box-office success has nothing to do with it, quality and success are usually mutually exclusive. (Happy New Yearescaped the list because of Deepika Padukone’s radiant presence, Kickbecause, nobody goes to see a Salman Khan film for its plot.) Here’re the ten that reached the bottom of the barrel: 1) Action Jackson:Prabhudeva’s film just shocked everyone, because Ajay Devgn has better taste (arguably) and better sense than to do a film with no redeeming quality. There can be no hope from Sonakshi Sinha whose selection of roles has not exactly been wildly diverse. 2) Ungli: A film about a vigilante group tackling corruption should have hit the spot in the current climate, but Rensil D’Silva blew the chance. Another flop notched up for Emraan Khan, and Kangana Ranaut wasted. 3) Kill Dil: Shaad Ali tried to marry his ownBunty Aur BabliwithGunday—the re-

Emraan Hashmi could have done with a hit. 7) Entertainment: Never mind how much money it made, this Sajid-Farhad film starring Akshay Kumar and a dog was loud, irritating and pointless. 8) Humshakals: Sajid Khan had barely recovered from theHimmatwaladebacle that he inflicted this monstrosity on the public—a rather forgiving public that had bought tickets for his earlier, equally bad films, giving him the idea that he knew the pulse of the masses. 9) The XPose: That Himesh Reshammiya still has the nerve to act and then gets Honey Singh to join him, and comes up with a film so awful that its unintentionally hilarious. hile speculations surrounding Alia Bhatt and the sequel to Rock On! continue, there were reports that the actress might even sing her own songs in the film. However, there is no confirmed news about the actress joining the film, but she is one of the strongest contenders for the new female addition to the original band. According to sources, Alia's name is only being tossed around in the mix at the moment, and at the moment she has only been approached. The biggest hindrances faced by the makers to get Alia on board will be her dates. Next year, she had already committed to a film opposite Sushant Singh Rajput which starts around the same time as 'Rock On 2'. The film will also be directed by debutant Shujaat Saudagar. Producer Ritesh Sidhwani has said that apart from the director, none of the cast members have been finalised.

STRUCK ON THE HEAD, SPORTS
We proved ourselves, says Pujara
ADELAIDE: Having done his bit with the willow, Cheteshwar Pujara said India's strong reply meant the visitors' young batsmen have proven themselves on the third day of the first cricket Test versus Australia. After Australia declared their first innings at the overnight score of 517/7, India finished the day at 369/5 with Virat Kohli making his seventh Test hundred and Pujara himself scoring a fine 73. "We discussed yesterday that we needed to fight back in the match," said Pujara after the day's play. "We talked about what they have scored on this pitch and the kind of wicket this is. We discussed that given the batting line up we have we can surely achieve this. "Overall we have a very good, young batting line up and it was about proving ourselves. We did that and we are in good position to achieve our targets," he added. This was Pujara's only second half-century in the last 16 Test innings, with the last one coming in England where he had a miserable time on tour. Thereafter he had done a stint with county side Derbyshire to improve his batting and it finally paid off. "I have prepared hard for this tour. I believe in preparation and even though I just scored 73 runs, I am quite happy with how it worked out for me. Earlier, at times I have been getting good starts but have not been able to capitalise on them," said the Saurashtra batsman. "You cannot possibly score double hundreds all the time. But the intention is to keep trying to score as many runs as possible. You also have to respect the opposition. When I do get out, I analyse what went wrong and what are the areas I can work on to become a better player."Pujara is well aware that conditions Down Under are quite different from rest of the world. "The conditions here are quite different from the ones in Derbyshire. But playing there helped me obviously," he said.

Ton up Kohli inspires India’s fight against Australia on captaincy debut, end day two at 369 for five
Virat Kohli is struck on the helmet by a Mitchell Johnson bouncer during the first Test at Adelaide on Thursday.

A
DELAIDE: Virat Kohli became only the third Indian to score a hundred on his captaincy debut as the visitors responded resolutely to Australia's mammoth first innings total by reaching 369 for five on the third day to leave the first cricket Test evenly poised. Kohli, standing in for injured regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, became the first Indian after Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar to score a hundred on his debut as skipper of the team.
Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian player to post a century on debut as captain. Vijay Hazare (164 not vs England at Delhi in 1951-52) was the first followed by Sunil Gavaskar (116 vs New Zealand at Auckland in 1975-76) and Dilip Vengsarkar (102 vs West Indies at Delhi in 1987-88)
The 26-year-old's seventh ton in the five-day format ended at 115 after he was dismissed by Mitchell Johnson off a short-pitched delivery just before stumps. The Indian's attempted pull landed in the hands of Ryan Harris at deep fine leg in the 95th over of the day. At draw of stumps, Wriddhimaan Saha (1) was holding fort in the company of Rohit Sharma, who batted fluently to score 33 in 66 balls. The resolute effort by the Indians, undone to an extent by Kohli's late dismissal, came after the Australians declared their first innings at an overnight score of 517/7. On a bright and sunny day which started early to make up for the four hours of play lost yesterday due to rain, the Indians dominated the proceedings for most part before Kohli's wicket swung the equations slightly in Australia's favour. Earlier in the morning, opener Shikhar Dhawan (25) departed in the eighth over but the rest of the top-order fired in unison to put India in

a comfortable position on a placid track. It started with Murali Vijay (53) notching up his seventh Test half century in the pre-lunch session, followed by Cheteshwar Pujara (73) sailing to his sixth in the pre-tea session, and ended with Kohli's inspiring knock. In between, Ajinkya Rahane (62) also managed to clinch his fifth Test fifty as Australian bowlers toiled just BRIEF SCORES: Australia 517/7 dec [Steven Smith not out 162] lead India 369/5 in 97 overs [Murali Vijay 53, Cheteshwar Pujara 73, Virat Kohli 115, A Rahane 62, Mitchell Johnson 2/90] by 148 runs.

the way their Indian counterparts had to on the first two days of the match. Pacer Mitchell Johnson bent his back to send down a couple of probing spells but the wickets were hard to come by. Johnson, the most menacing of all the Aussie pacers today, ended the day with figures of 2/90 in his 18 overs -Kohli's wicket being his most crucial strike. Spinner Nathan Lyon also managed to pick up two wickets for his toil of 30 overs in which he conceded 103 runs.Notwithstanding Kohli's brilliant knock, which came off 184 balls and was laced with 12 fours, India still trail Australia by 148 runs in the first innings at the end of the third day.
Jittery Aussies rattled after Kohli hit by bouncer
ADELAIDE: The emotional toll that Phillip Hughes' death has taken on the Australian cricketers was all too evident when the home side's nervous players rushed to check on Indian skipper Virat Kohli after he was hit by a Mitchell Johnson bouncer here. The opening Test, which has seen an outpouring of emotions owing to Hughes' death a couple of weeks ago after being hit by a bouncer in a domestic game, was witness to some more dramatic moments on the third day here. In the 31st over of India's first innings, Kohli walked in after the dismissal of Murali Vijay (53) and was immediately welcomed by a short-pitched delivery from Johnson. The right-hander ducked but was hit on the badge of his helmet, prompting him to take off his gear for a moment. And perhaps it was the trauma of Hughes' death that had a nervous-looking Johnson immediately rushing to check on Kohli's well-being. The Indian seemed unfazed but the Aussies were visibly rattled when Kohli took off his helmet. Home team's skipper Michael Clarke was among the fielders who ran up to him and enquired if he was alright.

HUBANESWAR: India produced an inspirational performance with a magnificent comefrom-behind 4-2 victory over Belgium to set-up a mouthwatering semi-final clash against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament. It was a fantastic comeback after being down 0-2 within 18th minute courtesy goals from Felix Denayer (12th minute) and Sebastien Dockier (18th). But the hosts, ranked ninth in the world immediately pulled one back in that very minute through Rupinder Pal Singh (18th). SK Uthappa (27th) levelled the proceedings while Akashdeep Singh (41st) and Dharamvir Singh (49th) also scored in one of India's most famous victory in recent time. The arch-rivals will meet in the second semi-finals on Saturday. World champions Australia will meet Olympic champions Germany in another last-four match. By virtue of this win, India has also avenged upon their 2-3 defeat against Belgium in this year's World Cup at The Hague, Netherlands. India were slow to get off the block as Belgium dominated the first quarter and earned two successive penalty corners inside the first 10 minutes but an alert India custodian PR Sreejesh foiled the second attempt with his out-stretched legs. golden chance to score for India from the following counter-attack as he hit straight to the Belgian goalkeeper Vincent Vanash from a Dharamvir Singh pass. Belgium hit India hard minutes later when Denayer's drag-flick found the back of the net from their third penalty corner. India did not have the best of starts in the second quarter as well three minutes into the quarter Sebastian scored with a lovely touch from Tanguy Cosyns pass. The Indian defence should
only be blamed for the second goal as they did not close down on Cosyns quickly and gave the Belgian forward ample time to find his man. Hurt by the two goals but buoyed by the 7,000 strong home crowd at the Kalinga Stadium, the Indian team bounced back strongly and went on the offensive, which resulted in their first penalty corner and Rupinder was at his lethal best to pull one back for the hosts. Minutes later, Ramandeep Singh's shot from top of the circle was easily kicked away
by Belgian custodian Vincent Vanash. Dharamvir then forced a fine save from Vanash. Pumped up by the goal, India pressed hard thereafter and managed to draw level in the 27th minute when Uthappa was at the right place to neatly deflect home a V R Raghunath's delivery from outside the striking circle. Seconds from halftime Belgium wasted a bright chance when an unmarked Tom Boon shot wide with only Sreejesh to beat as both the teams went into the breather locked at 2-2.

31 Anand draws with Kramnik in London Classic L
ONDON: Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw as black against Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in the first round of the London Chess Classic here today. After finishing joint third in the rapid open tournament, Anand showed deep preparation in the first classical game here and this was a good beginning for the Indian ace as he was not bothered at all with the black pieces at London's Olympia Conference Centre. The six-player five-round tournament saw local star Michael Adams emerging as early leader following a hard-earned victory over world number two Fabiano Caruana of Italy. The other game between Hikaru Nakamura of United States and Anish Giri of Holland was a tame draw without much action on the board. With three points under the soccer-like scoring system, Adams enjoys a two point lead over Anand, Kramnik, Nakamura and Giri while Caruana will hope to open his account when he meets Anand in the next round. Anand showed that he had prepared well against former world champion Kramnik. It was a Semi Slav Botwinnik wherein Kramnik went for the most principled variation and high tactics already mentioned in the theoretical books ensued for a long time. Sitting in the main commentary hall, Garry Kasparov was seen analysing this game. "We had this position on board (after Kramnik's 26th move) almost 20 years ago (in analysis) and we thought no one will ever play it like this, black can only draw or lose," said Kasparov while the game was still going on. However, as was clear, Anand was still in his preparation at this point as Kramnik could do no better than reach a level rook and pawns endgame where the draw was a just result after 45 moves. Caruana was a bit unlucky to go down from better position against Adams. The Ruy Lopez opening by Adams as white yielded a favourable position for the Italian when Adams miscalculated and allowed a central break through. Soon, Caruana was on top but a slightly miscued attempt at simplifying the position resulted in wild complexities after Adams sacrificed a Knight on the king side.
