umbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar yesterday claimed that the media had exaggerated the intensity of the dengue outbreak in the city, only to clarify later that she had been "misconstrued". "Dengue is an epidemic, but the media has blown it out of proportions. You (the media) are making it look like a very big problem, which is why I visited the Rajawadi hospital to see the dengue patients," Ambekar said yesterday after her visit to the suburban hospital. According to the municipal corporation, the disease has claimed 12 lives in the city and over 700 cases of infection have been reported till the first week of November. Ambekar said that instead of targeting the administration, the media should inspect the houses and look out for stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. “Though the number of reported cases has increased this year, the number of deaths has gone down," she claimed. However, later, in the evening, she defended her statements saying, “I was only trying to say that there are many people who are admitted to hospital only as suspected cases, but they fear they have dengue. Who has put this fear in them? Media has not provided a complete picture of the existing situation. BMC is trying every possible solution to curb this menace," Ambekar said. he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) survey of public toilets in the city which is being carried out as a part of BMC’s implementation of Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan has received a good response from the citizens as in four days, 10 mails at cleanmumbai.suggestions@gmail.com have been received, suggesting and sending their views as to how better we can keep the city clean. This survey which was started by the civic authority on November 7, on public toilets in the city will help compile data of what will be required to upgrade the state of the toilets. When asked, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prakash Patil (Solid waste management) BMC said the implementation and suggestions received from the citizens will be adopted he answered, “We have received a good response with 10 mails in just four days and we are

going to take this Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan which is a five year initiative very seriously and analyse the suggestions and hold meetings and workshops wherein the PPP (Public Private Partnership) for private toilets, Mhada and other agencies involved will be invited in order to come out with ideas and solution as soon as possible and make sure that the toilets as well as the streets are brought to a good state.” The BMC has directed all the ward officers to submit the reports of the survey done in their particular wards but, as of now no ward officer has come forward with reports stating the condition of the toilets which need to be fixed up in their wards till November 19 which is observed as World Toilet Day. Patil explained, “There are two types of public toilets namely- Pay and use; and Composting toilets out of which the Pay and use toilets belong to private officers on PPPbasis. Whereas, there are around 7,000 composting toilets in the city which are constructed by the BMC, Slum Board of Mhada through the funds of MLA's and MP's.” “We are expecting the reports from the ward officers soon and we will be trying our best to fix up problems like- Choke up, doors bro-

ken, water logging, proper sanitation in the toilets before November 19,” he added. When asked about the funds for the survey conducted and the fixing of the toilets he said, “The overall funds required is Rs 2 to 3 crore which is available because there are councillor funds, and the deputy municipal commissioner has Rs 1 crore for the fund and the Assistant Municipal Commissioner has Rs 50

lakhs which can be used at any time.” The ADC reported yesterday that the BMC is also in the process of constructing more toilets for senior citizens. The discussion over Right to Pee is already on. The campaigners, members of 30 NGOs, have come forward to make toilets for women in the city. “They have shortlisted 175 locations where toilets can be built,” said Additional

Municipal Commissioner Vikas Kharage of the BMC. Kharge also explained, that the civic body is also going to conduct a week-long workshop from November 14 which will end on World Toilet Day. The week will be called 'Swachhta Week' and students of the BMC schools will be educated on waste management and littering. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

IIT-Bombay gets it very wrong By Yatin Ingle

n October 27, the Facebook page of Mood Indigo, IITBombay's annual cultural festival, flashed a poster with the text: “IIT Bombay Mood Indigo Illuminati presents Christopher Nolan the genius behind 'Insomnia', 'Memento', 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight', 'Inception', 'The Dark Knight Rises', 'Interstellar' on December 28 at IIT Bombay.” This message spread like wildfire across social networks and thousands of students made plans to attend the festival solely to see the director. Two days later, on October 29, however, when the organisers realised that the people were under the impression that the director was going to be at the festival, they posted another message stating that they would be paying a tribute to the director and he will not be attending the festival. The hopes and dreams of many of Christopher Nolan's fans and filmmakers in India came crashing down. This news has created a sort of negative atmosphere among po-

tential attenders of the festival, We regret the announcement for it's almost as if the organisers and the consequent social media deceived them to ensure atten- outbreak.” dance. Nirbhay Singh, a student of mass media at KES Shroff College, said, “I want to pursue filmmaking as a career. When the organisers posted the banner saying that Christopher Nolan, Vikas Sabnis the legend director, would be present at the festival I was excited and eager to meet him. But later when these organisers claimed that there has been a confusion and the director will not be attending the festival, it completely ruined my mood. I will not be attending the festival. Mood-Indigo is an international festival and such a goof-up has brought down the reputation of the fest.” Last year the famous Indian band Euphoria made infamous derogatory comments on female students at IIT. One organising committee members on condition of anonymity said, "We sincerely It is going to clear all those apologise for all the confusion files on a war footing, once surrounding our tribute to Mr Nolan. Celebrating India in Egypt

About one hundred Egyptian school children were felicitated for winning a painting competition held across Cairo city for nurturing a bond between the people of India and Egypt by highlighting India's rich cultural heritage. Hundred winners from 15 different categories of the annual 'Glimpses of India' contest were given prizes at a ceremony organised on Monday by the Indian Embassy and the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian

Culture (MACIC), in cooperation with Egyptian Ministry of Education. Seventy-five participating children with special needs were also given prizes during the ceremony. The winners received medals and catalogues carrying all the winning paintings of the children. During the event, Indian Ambassador to Egypt Navdeep Suri and Egyptian actress Laila Elwi inaugurated an exhibition showcasing all the winning

paintings. Suri said that the 'Glimpses of India' contest is one of the finest activities of our cultural centre. It gives people a chance to encourage the development of artistic talent amongst the youth. Suri said it was equally important for creating a unique bond that will hopefully endure as these kids grow older and will continue to nurture the special friendship between the people of Egypt and India for years to come.

hough Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday appealed to all the political parties including the Congress to facilitate an unanimous election for the Assembly Speaker, the fate of the Congress in the state legislature depends on Shiv Sena's decision on its ties with BJP, as the split in the saffron alliance can put a serious question mark on the future of the old party which ruled India for a long time. Against the backdrop of a most likely three-way contest with the ruling BJP, Congress and Shiv Sena putting up candidates for the Speaker's post, Fadnavis yesterday met the Congress leaders including the party's leader in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, former CM

the Assembly elections after a 15-year run. The defeat has been so bad that junior ally NCP, which parted ways ahead of the state polls, finished just one seat behind. For Congress to revive its base in the state, it has to be in the political focus as the opposition, seen to be fighting the BJP government. The gathering of all three parties – BJP, Sena and NCP – on the same side, as the situation initially appeared, would help the Congress more as it can position itself as the sole opposition. It makes Sena's decision on BJP alliance critical for Congress's politics in the state which the party has ruled for most of the post-independence period, the sources added further. Now the Congress leaders are desperately waiting for the Sena's decision.

bandoned ammunition was found at the Sassoon Dock, Colaba on Tuesday, creating panic among locals. Navy officials who attended the site said that it was classified as an “already used rocket”. It was lapse on account of the navy and they further said that it was snagged in a fishing net at sea and had arrived on land. Locals in Sassoon Dock informed the local police that they had found something like a missile used by the Indian Navy. South Mumbai region Additional Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash then informed Navy officials about the incident. Prakash said, “A dummy rocket inadvertently left lying in the grass near the fishing office in Sassoon Dock came to our notice. We informed the navy officials who later took possession of the rocket.” According to eye witnesses, it was a heavyweight missile shape object and filled with cement concrete. For sometime, people

According to the report, a little less than 50 per cent of the population – in wards F north, P south/north, R south/north, L, M west, N and S wards – lives in slums as of 2011. After the public housing stock created in the city from 1995, till date there are only two lakh dwelling units constructed under the state and the central government schemes. And there are 4.6 lakh dwelling units which have been approved for construction by the Slum Rehablitation Authority (SRA) out of which 33.7 per cent have received Occupation Certificates (OC). And there are no projects begun under the Rajiv Awas Yojana in the city till September 2014.

Out of the total 2,03,624 units undertaken by the State and Government of India it has been seen that no projects have taken off under the Rajiv Awas Yojana, affordable housing in partnership schemes of the Government of India, in the city as of September 2014 whereas the status of completion of units undertaken by the Government of Maharashtra schmes – MHADA, SRA and MMRDA (SRA cell) – there are 26,101 units completed out of which 3,565 are still under construction as on October 2014. After inspection, they clarified that the object is a missile used for training purpose. “It was classified as an already used practice rocket. The rocket is fired in the high seas as per laid down procedures and is completely safe as there is no explosive content left after firing. The rocket has been since transferred to the Armament Depot for safe keeping,” said Rahul Sinha, Chief Public Relation Officer, Ministry of Defence, Mumbai. According to sources, during the training of missile firing, the navy fills missiles with some cement concrete to balance the shell of the missile and its maneuvering in mid air, once fired. ersonnel of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Special Protection Group (SPG) have questioned the man at the centre of the security breach during the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last month, where PM Narendra Modi was also present. Anil Mishra, who claims to be a BJP activist, was arrested after the security lapse came to light and has been charged with impersonation and criminal trespass. "IB and SPG, which are conducting parallel inquiry into the security lapse, recently questioned Anil Mishra at length. Their line of inquiry focused on how he managed to sneak into the high security zone and if

he had any criminal intentions," an officer privy to the probe told PTI on Tuesday. SPG is an armed force providing security to the Prime Minister, former PMs and members of their immediate families and some other VVIPs. Mishra was produced before a local court yesterday at the end of his police custody. He has been remanded in judicial custody till November 24, police said. Mishra allegedly entered Wankhede Stadium, where the ceremony was held on Oct. 31, without a valid pass and got onto the dais where Modi was sitting along with other dignitaries. He posed as a public servant and gained entry at the event.

32 year-old woman was brutally murdered by a man suspected to be known to her. The murder was witnessed by her two minor daughters who saw the accused when he was slitting their mother's throat in her bedroom. Shagufta Khan lived at Rustomji Riviera building in Malad (West) along with her two daughters. Her husband lives in Australia on business. On Tuesday afternoon, when the girls came back from school, the main door to their home was partially open. They entered the flat and were shocked to see a man, who has visited their home several times, slitting their mother's throat. The girl ran from the bedroom and informed their neighbours. In the meantime, the killer took the opportunity to make his escape along with a booty. Deputy Commissioner of Police Balsing Rajput revealed that, “The preliminary probe suggested that the accused, who killed her with a knife, was known to her as there was no sign of forced entry into

nvestigations into the brutal murder of Malad based Shagufta Khan has led the police to probe two specific angles in the case, in which the city's biggest cricket bookie's name is cropping up. In the first angle, the police suspect Sonu Jalan to have ordered the killing of Khan. Sonu Jalan was Khan's paramour for the past several years. Jalan, presently located in Australia, may have ordered the killing when he found that she was having a relationship with someone else in the city. In the second angle, the police is also trying to locate a person named Siraj, whom they suspect to be the killer. While speaking with the ADC, a highly placed crime branch source, requesting anonymity, said, “It is believed that Khan was having an intimate relationship with Siraj, who was a frequent visitor to Khan's house at Rustom Riviera building in Malad (W). With Siraj's arrest, the police will successfully crack the case,” The officer further added that with the CCTV footage of the building and the two minor daughters being witnesses in the

Bookie Sonu Jalan

Presently, Sonu Jalan is considered to be a bigshot bookie in the city's Satta Bazar. Jalan, who officially resides at Agarwal Residency on Shankar Lane, Kandivali (W), is close to a former assistant inspector who had resigned from the force. In the past two years, most of the highprofile raids and arrests of several bighshot bookies in city was due to the war going on between Jalan and another popular bookie called Junior Calcutta. According to sources in the police force, Jalan and Calcutta had a tiff on money matters which led to a big war within Mumbai's bookie circle in 2012-2013. It was during this time that the IPL matches scams and racket came to fore. In this regard, Jalan had told the crime branch sleuths that he had paid Rs 10 crore to a Sri Lankan cricketer to fix a match in 2012. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

umbai police on Monday arrested a fraudster for duping his own friends to the tune of several crores of rupees. The accused, identified as Girish Shetty, was arrested by the sleuths from Sakinaka police station. Based on a businessman's complaint this year, Shetty was arrested from the city of Udupi in Karnataka. Shetty is suspected to have cheated several businessman in the city and other cities, said police adding that they are checking whether the accused has more cases against him in the city. While talking with the ADC, Prasanna More, senior inspector of Sakinaka police station said, “Shetty used to get in touch with his friends and lure them into investing in his fake scheme. Further, the accused used to manage to get in touch with persons

known to his friends and then influence them too to invest in his phoney scheme.” In this regard, Shetty by taking advance payment from the investors used to import teak-wood logs from Africa. After ordering the logs the accused used to tell the investors to deposit the money in his bank account to import the goods by ship to India. Just to gain confidence of the investors, Shetty used to make an agreement with the investors and would also sign indemnity bonds, said police. Finally, when the goods would arrive at the docks, Shetty would sell the same goods to other people at cheaper rates and then go underground. After months of investigation and collecting information regarding Shetty, police were successful in nabbing Shetty. Shetty has been arrested under section 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) of IPC and is remanded to police custody till November 14. If the sources in the police are to be believed, in 2012 Shetty was arrested for organising a big rave party of 3,000 foreigners at St. Mary's Island at Malpe in Karnataka.

en days after a 22-yearold Gujarat based textile trader was robbed of Rs 48 lakh by four masked men on the Mumbai-Ahemdabad National Highway in Vasai, sleuths of the Palghar district police arrested three persons involved in the crime while one of their accomplice is still at large. The police team has also recovered Rs 30.70 lakh from the possession of the trio who have been identified as Nilesh Sundar Shetty (38), Saagir Hussain Khan (24) and Javed Habibullah Shaikh (22) – all residents of Borivali. A textile trader, Abhishek Kamal Mantri (22), is a resident of Surat who had landed in Mumbai after a business trip in Hyderabad on November 2. Accompanied by his friend identified as Mallikarjun Rao, Mantri who was carrying cash amounting more than Rs 50 lakh was headed towards Surat in his Chevrolet Cruize car (GJ:16:AP:7744). The duo stopped to have a drink at Hotel Charvak, a ladies orchestra bar in Borivali at about 6 pm, where they splurged more than Rs 4.12 lakhs on a bargirl. At

about 2 am, they resumed their journey. However, when they took a brief halt to attend nature's call near Burma Cell Petrol Pump in Vasai, a green coloured Swift car stopped near them and four masked men armed with iron rods mounted a violent assault on them before escaping with the bag containing the cash. Mantri immediately informed the Valiv police about the incident. Initially the investigating team suspected the involvement of the hotel staff to whom Mantri in an apparent attempt to flaunt his richness and impress the bargirls, revealed about the huge amount he was carrying in his car. However, the culprit turned out to be Nilesh Shetty, another regular customer at the bar who apparently overheard the conversation and hatched a plan along with his three accomplices. The investigating team has recovered Rs 30.70 lakh from the possession of the accused and also seized the Swift car that was used in the crime. While all the accused have been remanded to police custody, a man hunt has been launched to track their absconding accomplice.

the MLAs present and voting. If only any political party demands a division of votes in a trust vote then a head count is taken on the floor of the house. Sena sources disclosed that at the meeting of its party MLAs which was chaired by president Uddhav Thackeray, the party issued a whip asking them to vote for the party candidate. Even then sources disclosed that the party would wait for a positive response from the BJP till today morning. The time to withdraw nomination for the Speaker's post is 10 am and voting for the post will be held from 11 am to 2 pm. By fielding its former min-

ister Varsha Gaikwad as its candidate for the Speaker's post, the Congress muddied the picture further. Now it will be a three-way fight for the post with the BJP fielding its veteran legislator Haribhau Bagade from Phulambri as its candidate for the post. Sources disclosed that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) decided not to field its candidate even as Congress had sought its view on whether it (NCP) was going to contest the poll. Since the poll is to be held by secret ballot all the four major parties were busy tutoring their MLAs over dinner on how to vote during the polls. Sources in the BJP disclosed that the talks with the Sena were deadlocked over sharing of cabinet portfolios. The BJP has firmly turned down the Sena demand for allocation of Deputy Chief Minister's post and key portfolios of Home and Revenue. In response to that the Sena now has asked for two additional ministerial berths besides the 10 cabinet berths that it has been asking. Sources in the BJP disclosed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah were in favour of taking the Sena on board in its attempt to secure the majority trust vote. He pointed out that the previous Congress-NCP ruling alliance had denied the post of Deputy Speaker in the lower house to Sena-BJP, then in the opposition. He hinted at the possibility of BJP offering the post to the Sena in lieu of its support. prashant.hamine@afternoondc.in

Declare dengue as an epidemic, PIL urges HC PIL in Bombay High Court on Tuesday urged that dengue, which has claimed several lives in the state, be declared an epidemic and steps be taken by the government on war-footing to tackle the disease. The public interest litigation, filed by social activist Vishnu Gavali, would be heard by the High Court on November 17. Gavali prayed that the state government and concerned authorities be directed to take adequate measures to prevent the spread of dengue and malaria. The PIL said that in the last five months, several persons have died due to dengue and malaria, which have created an "epidemic-like situation." It alleged that that deaths have occurred due to lapse in providing medical facilities by the government. Alleging that the state health department has totally failed to stop or prevent the situation, the PIL prays that the authorities be directed to take immediate preventive steps, reports PTI. "The state government hospitals and semi-government hospitals, including Directorate of Health should not play with the life of common man and no one should die without getting medical services and health care facilities," says the PIL.

However, Kunte with Jalota, Adtani and Mhaiskar have been summoned to the court on January 12, 2015, as a complaint has been filed by Mumbai Municipal Mazdoor Union leader Sharad Rao against the above mentioned officials as they are responsible for the collapse of the building, as it was owned and maintained by the civic administration. Rao's advocate, S T Markande said, “The report submitted by deputy engineer Sagavekar on July 7, 2012 clearly mentioned that the building was in a dilapidated condition and it was advised that the building should be vacated to avoid loss of life and property. Ponder awhile… “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” — Lord Acton

“M Chance of coalition government remote T

HE Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had to be content to remain in the shadow of Shiv Sena has moved out into bright sunshine and is looking forward to giving the state good governance and development. The party now wants to be free and it will try its best to avoid any coalition government. It has already realised that accepting the various conditions of the Shiv Sena for supporting it will not be in its interest. Shiv Sena is equally determined to join a coalition only if some of its demands are met. The demands which the Sena is still making are that the Speaker of the House should be from its own party. This, of course, is not acceptable to the BJP. And it has asked for a dozen seats in the government – some of them plum posts. This too is not acceptable to the BJP. In clear challenge, it has elected the leader of the Opposition – indicating that when the House meets today it will sit in the Opposition. After all these developments, the Sena has given the BJP till 10 a.m. today to decide on letting it know what its response will be? Is the Sena expecting a last-minute positive reaction from the BJP? It would be pertinent to point out that the BJP has already made up its mind about how far it will go with regard to the numerous conditions made by the Sena. Finally, in politics, you can never tell. Things can change overnight and a new scenario can emerge.

INIMUM government, maximum governance” is a catchy election slogan. But as Narendra Modi has realised in the six odd months he’s been prime minister, it is not a practical dictum for running a country as vast and as diverse as India whose politics present complex challenges at every juncture. And so, in the first expansion of his cabinet, he has not only swelled the size of what was supposed to be a lean, mean government, he has also fallen back on the same mix of caste, region and merit on which his Congress predecessors relied to balance the pulls and pressures of electoral politics with efficient administration. If Suresh Prabhu, Manohar Parrikar and Jayant Sinha represent technocratic competence, Birendra Singh (a Jat), Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (an OBC) and Ram Shankar Katheria (a Dalit) belong to the new caste calculus that Modi is working with to enlarge the BJP’s national footprint in the coming years. The two most critical states for the Modi plan are Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where assembly elections are coming up in 2015 and 2017 respectively. It’s no coincidence that both states have the largest representation in the expanded union cabinet: 7 from Bihar and 12 from UP. Modi has his eyes firmly fixed on the upcoming polls. The expansion exercise tells us one more thing about the Modi government. While Modi clearly intends to continue with his PMO-centric style of functioning, he seems to have understood that he must delegate a little bit for delivery of his campaign promise of achche din. He has identified a few key areas of focus – the economy, defence and railways – and he has handed them over to ministers with a proven record of efficiency so that his government can show results. Traditionally, all three portfolios were handed out to political heavyweights. The current ministers – Jaitley, Parrikar and Prabhu – are lightweights whose route to Parliament is through the Rajya Sabha. But they will probably be among the privileged few to enjoy a degree of autonomy while other ministers, including BJP biggies like Rajnath Singh and Sushma Swaraj, will have to tolerate micro-management by the PMO.

HE demand to be safe in relationship inevitably breeds sorrow and fear. This seeking for security is inviting insecurity. Have you ever found security in any of your relationships? Have you? Most of us want the security of loving and being loved, but is there love when each one of us is seeking his own security, his own particular path? We are not loved because we don't know how to love. What is love? The word is so loaded and corrupted that I hardly like to use it. Everybody talks of love — every magazine and newspaper and every missionary talks everlastingly of love. I love my country, I love my king, I love some book, I love that mountain, I love pleasure, I love my wife, I love God. Is love an idea? If it is, it can be cultivated, nourished, cherished, pushed around, twisted in any way you like. When you say you love God what does it mean? It means that you love a projection of your

It is the PM’s prerogative to maintain confidentiality about cabinet reshuffles but in the past, most have chosen to give vague answers when asked. Wait and watch. You’ll know when it happens. That’s what Modi’s predecessors used to say. It’s standard practice for a politician to give evasive answers. It’s rare to make categorical denials as Modi did. This was supposed to be an off-the-record, frank chat with the country’s top English language journalists. Judging by this bit of deception, it would appear that Modi hasn’t got over his mistrust of the English media.

Rahul keen to fight Delhi polls

R

AHUL Gandhi’s prescription to revive the Congress in Delhi has caught senior leaders by surprise. He wants party bigwigs in the city to contest the forthcoming assembly polls. The list includes Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dikshit, Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler. Naturally, none are keen to fight a losing election. It’s apparent to all that the Delhi polls will be a straight fight between the BJP and AAP with the Congress slated to do even worse than its 2013 performance when it won just 8 seats. But Rahul believes that senior leaders must go back to basics and start again from the bottom. Considering that all four have been Lok Sabha MPs, it must be galling to face pressure to contest an assembly poll. has become so tremendously personal, sensuous, and limited that religions have declared that love is something much more than this. In what they call human love they see there is pleasure, competition, jealousy, the desire to possess, to hold, to control and to interfere with another's thinking, and knowing the complexity of all this they say there must be another kind of love, divine, beautiful, untouched, uncorrupted. Throughout the world, so-called holy men have maintained that to look at a woman is something totally wrong: they say you cannot come near to God if you indulge in sex, therefore they push it aside although they are eaten up with it. But by denying sexuality they put out their eyes and cut out their tongues for they deny the whole beauty of the earth. They have starved their hearts and minds; they are dehydrated human beings; they have banished beauty because beauty is associated with women. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

APROPOS 'No chance of alliance again' (ADC, Nov 11), it is really unfortunate that the alliance between Shiv sena and BJP is all over. Both the parties have shown their inflexibility and uncompromising attitude, borne out of their over confidence in securing victories alone. Out of both the parties it will be Shiv Sena which will be at tremendous loss since it has already been without power for the last 15 years. If the BJP continues to perform well, the Shiv Sena might be out of power for another 15. Severing of ties with BJP at the local level may also upstage their equation in the ensuing BMC elections. ew Employment Skills For India (NESI), a multi-faceted arts programme with an aim to provide support and employment skills to less privileged women in India has taken 75 women through an eight week-long training and uses music as a tool to ease inhibitions and build confidence amongst Indian women from lower income neighbourhoods. It culminates in a finale concert, bringing together underprivileged women from across the city to perform at Dadar Chowpatty on November 15, giving them the confidence that comes from performing for a large, appreciative audience. The project has been initiated in India by Superact

uals and strengthening communities. In the UK, Superact has conducted a number of programmes, working in a range of settings including prisons, schools and colleges, care homes and hospitals. Some of their projects include the Teenage Parents Project in Devon, which has seen them work with young parents to develop a network that will offer training opportunities, friendship and mentoring; Music and Memories in Bristol offers support to people living with dementia, by giving them the opportunity to sing, dance and listen to live music in a comfortable environment; and Southmead Hospital’s Fresh Arts Festival in October this year, for which Superact programmed a number of musicians who performed.”

(a UK-based non-profit organisation that uses music and the arts to conduct social impact projects) in collaboration with DB Tech (a network of Don Bosco skill training centres) and the Musicians Federation of India. According to Alison Smith, Chief Executive of Superact CIC, “NESI has been introduced in India by Superact, the organisation responsible for a number of very successful similar programmes in the UK and Europe. This not for profit company uses music and the arts to develop and deliver a wide range of social impact projects. Over the years, their projects have proven to make a positive difference in key areas of community development, skills development, employability and health and wellbeing, thereby empowering individ-

In a press release issued by Superact, it said, “Superact introduced the NESI programme in India, funded by UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). They teamed up with Don Bosco Tech Society and the Musicians Federation of India to deliver the programme. The primary purpose of the NESI programme is to develop the participants’ self esteem and foster foundation skills such as team work, organisation, management and planning, thereby providing them with essential skills to enter the labour market, and then subsequently providing them with the support to do so. The 75 women ultimately chosen for the NESI programme were chosen from amongst over 800 who DB Tech have trained since October last year in var-

ious courses. The idea is to train women in trades that they can pursue to earn a livelihood, such as cooking, paper conversion, beautician, candle making and tailoring, thereby addressing poverty and providing them with opportunities they ordinarily would not have access to. The women chosen for the NESI programme were selected on the basis of their interest in music, as well as awareness. With their basic training in employability done, NESI aims at building confidence amongst these women. Stuart DaCosta – who is a musician himself, the founder of The Bandstand Cultural Society and runs Cotton Press Studio in Mumbai – has been closely involved with the NESI programme since its inception,

and is a key trainer. Other trainers include musician Tanmay Bhattacherjee, musician and Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music alumnus Aalok Padhye, dance art therapist Renelle Snelleksz and others. The project culminates in a concert, where the 75 women involved in the NESI programme will take the stage for the first time in their lives, showcasing the music they have learned over the past eight weeks, at Dadar Chowpatty on November 15 in Veer Baji Prabhu and Sant Dyaneshwar Udyan. This will be followed by a reception at Krida Bhavan in Dadar where the critically acclaimed London-based duo B ‘n’ M comprising guitarist Heidi Heidelberg and flautist Mauricio Velasierra will perform.”

Very few students from state to join Aviation training programs due to lack of information and guidance — Capt. A D Manek

MUMBAI: The Skyline Aviation Club is actively engaged in aviation training since last 27 years. We were able to train more than 3500 students for an aviation career as Airline Pilot, Flight Dispatcher, Air Hostess, Flight Purser and Aeronautical Radio Officer. Talking here in Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh Capt. A D Manek, CHIEF PILOT INSTRUCTOR and MANAGING TRUSTEE of THE SKYLINE AVIATION CLUB told,"Our records shows that there are very few students from Maharashtra state to join Aviation training programs due to lack of information and guidance. Social Welfare Department, Government of India is offering full scholarships of Rs.25 Lacs to students belonging to SC, ST and OBC categories for Commercial Pilot License training course. All nationalised banks are offering educational loan up to 25 lacs to students belonging to Open category. But due to lack of awareness on airline careers, students and parents are not able to avail these financial assistance from Government or Bank. Capt. Manek further said,"In 1895, Mr. Shivkar Bapuji Talpade resident of Mumbai belonging to Pathare Prabhu Maharashtrian family invented airplane and flew at Chowpatty in Mumbai and he became first Indian in the world to invent airplane 8 years before wright brothers first flight on December 17, 1903. But unfortunately our Indians including Maharashtrian people forgot him. We in Maharashtra not able to feel proud of invention of airplane by our Maharashtrian only because we do not know about such history which reflect our lack of information, knowledge and interest. Automobile Industry is largely a labour intensive industry and labour management is at the core of its success

A

ccording to the Automotive Mission Plan for the period of 2006-2016, there is a major step taken to make India a global automotive hub. This Mission Plan aims to make India emerge as a

preferred global destination for design and manufacture of automobiles and auto components, with estimated output reaching a level of USD 145 billion and providing additional employment to around 25 million people by 2016. Considering the new government’s focus on turning India into a manufacturing hub, automobile sector is sure to draw investments and

I am a final-year CA student. I realised in Class XII, that I actually had lot of interest in doing medicine. I do have an interest in CA, will be completing it and doing a job in the CA field only. But is there any long-distance course or something related to medicine where Class XII science is not required? I want to do it for knowledge, to fulfill my interest or suggest some good books explaining everything about the body, its functioning, effects of things etc? —Krishna Pathak To the best of my knowledge, there is no recognised institute that offers courses related to Medicine through distance education and especially for students coming from non-science (PCB) background. As mentioned above, since you are keen on your interest towards medicine, you can enhance your knowledge through reading related books, websites wherein you can begin with basic understanding of medicine and related topics but you will not be authorised to treat anyone. Please note that human anatomy is quite fascinating and hence there are thousands of books written all over the world for each and every body part; so you can go through the various websites to search for the right books. And considering your interest as well as academic qualification that you are pursuing, you can have further opportunities to work with hospitals, health care centres and so on in the respective roles as per your qualification.

Auto mode on Continued from pg 13 « ness of players. Lack of training is the next critical challenge, as this directly impacts service quality and delivery. While ensuring continuous skills upgradation for existing service manpower, players also need to provide training for new entrants. Given the high levels of churn and need for expansion, several players feel that their service capacity, number of training facilities, nature of the training courses, instructors, etc. – are likely to be under pressure to meet future training needs. We need to understand that we have transitioned in a society where knowledge and technical skill is important but soft skills which determine how one deals with people, how adaptable one is to changes in the environment, how well he/she adjust with others in the team and the way they approach problem solving - are becoming more critical to employers who need their resources to be at par with the rest of the world. This is where the conventional training modules offered to the employees or potential employees of the sector fail to incorporate. This becomes even more important now with FDI policy which will allow international giants to set up their manufacturing units and offices in India making it essential for our workforce to be employable to suit their standards. Manpower for automotive servicing is typically recruited from three sources. Firstly, for entry level personnel like

trainees and technicians, resources are recruited directly from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) or Polytechnics. Typically, students of motor mechanic trade are preferred, though for specific requirements, other trades like electricians may also be considered. Most players absorb such fresh recruits after putting them through an induction and initial training period of about six months. These trainings are typically the technical trainings relating to production and services. Secondly, given the high level of competition in the industry, it is natural for players to look at trained manpower from their competition, as potential recruits. This is more applicable for middle and senior levels such as supervisors, service advisors and service managers, which usually require diploma holders or graduates with three to five years of experience and thirdly, from the market – which is typically for senior management levels. Most players advertise for these senior positions which require engineering graduates, preferably with post graduate diplomas, with 8-10 years of experience. All these roles require a balance of technical know-how and soft skills and in some cases may require more of the latter than the former. Globally, experts are recognizing that life-skills make all the difference in a candidate. By this we mean skills which not only develop one’s soft skills but also their character traits. Transformational training’ was developed in India by Achievers Zone to ensure this overall development of the employees by improving their interpersonal and communication skills, leadership development, teamwork, time management and conflict management,

thus building their overall self-belief. There is another aspect of training that is critical for this sector and that is vocational training. Practically, the largest number of recruits in this industry are factory workers, they can be made job ready through vocational training specially designed for this sector. This can be done by partnerships with the educational institutions where curriculum can be designed according to the needs of the industry and imparted to the students. Following this, an assessment can be made to choose most competent candidates. The other way to keep the employees engaged and up to date is by providing periodical training even after they are employed to teach them improved techniques, better methods of execution etc. With the new government’s agenda of developing India as a manufacturing hub of the world, it is imperative that we start training for a robust skilled manpower. This can be possible only if we start imparting employability skills in the colleges and institute it. The newly appointed government has already made announcements about their plans to boost the sector and things are looking optimistic with larger FDIs in the sector and announcements of higher sales in the first quarter of 2014. Given all these factors, it is important that the industry realizes the importance of trained and skilled workforce and starts imparting such skills at colleges along with upgrading the skills of those already working. For students looking at the automobile sector, the future is very bright if they follow a structured path of education and training helping them get employed.

IMPORTANCE OF INTERNSHIPS

What is the importance of interning during college holidays? —Simran Treat internships as resume builders rather than fillers. It is ideal to intern at one company for at least four weeks to actually understand your major interest. Some internships only last for a few days, but if they are at a renowned companies or entail an interesting role, do pursue them anyway. Most internships are unpaid, but remember that they offer numerous other benefits besides the money. They help you gain insight into the company and industry, allow you to connect with others, inspire a career choice and teach you things such as time management, teamwork and work culture/etiquette. An internship is to test drive a career path, so you should pursue them during high school and college. If after graduation you are still looking for a job, or have moved countries and find it challenging to get one, interning is a great start and path to becoming employed.

martwatches have finally started to pick up as both players have increased and prices have dropped substantially. LG was one of the first manufacturers to release an Android Wear smartwatch, but the G Watch did not do well. Recently they launched a revamped G Watch R which looks more like a watch – with a completely circular screen and less like a piece of technology (as majority of the smartwatches look far more like a gadget). One advantage is that users will be able to fit any standard 22mm

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2014

I

did a college diploma in business finance from Canada. I didn't choose my career, it chose me. My husband, Manj gifted it to me. After Manj and I got married I used to work in an office doing admin work. I was always a big fan of music and I would sing a lot at home. Once I was singing along with a song in the car and Manj slowly turned the volume down so he could hear me sing. That evening he said "You need to get into the vocal booth and sing some female vocals for a track." My life changed from then on and now it’s come to singing in Bollywood for big banner films. The best thing about being a singer is seeing your fans appreciate your music. I love the euphoria in live concerts and being up close and personal with the people who give me this celebrity status. It's priceless and something money can never buy. Music also connects me to a spiritual awakening and it's amazing how you can communicate with over a million other souls only through the language of music. It's more like a stress buster for me. Education has brought out the businesswoman in the creative superwoman I am.

“You can communicate with over a million other souls only through the language of music,” says Nindy Kaur, singer, music composer and producer at Manj Musik

MOTHER IN THE

munication skills, teaching methods, how people learn and how to build a training plan. There are always jobs available in public schools and colleges, or even teaching kids how to play the piano. I help Manj with the lyrics and ideate on the video conceptualising and styling. I'm a musician/singer/song writer. You need to maintain a healthy code of conduct. I can never be a super successful singer at the cost of my husband and son being neglected. So I do the 48 hours non-stop travel 4-5 times in a month to India for shows but I make sure to be in Canada for my son despite being super exhausted. When Manj and I first got married we were penniless. We both started from scratch multi-tasking a day and a night job. After a whole year of nonstop working these three jobs we were finally able to invest into a music studio. A lot of hard work, dedication, commitment has been invested into taking this career to where it is. At times during the initial days we had to compromise on a family life and lavish purchases to establish a future for our family but it's all paid off. Money is always an issue in the music industry, period. For most people, the decision to work in the music business is the easy party. Things get a little harder when it comes time to pay for that music career. If you are exceptionally talented then there's immense scope on a global platform. These days singers perform for private functions, put up outdoor gigs and also compose for films. It's no longer perceived as a creative job that doesn't get the cash register ringing. You can peg the amount to anywhere up to Rs 50,000 and higher per month for starters. It takes about seven – 10 years to earn repute of your own and for people to sit up and take note. Life or love isn't perfect and everything is a lesson that inches you a step closer to the perception of perfection. You stop learning the day you think you are the perfect professional. Work and opportunities are endless so the income likewise is limitless. A professional can earn anywhere between Rs 5–10 lakh per month depending on the scale of projects and calibre of the singer. Always invest in a lot of hard and honest work, stay grounded and exhibit dedication. You can shape your destiny if your intentions are right.

MUSIC INDUSTRY

Education helped me find a voice. Education is the foundation of life and gives new perspectives to life. My educational experiences enabled me to be financially independent and understand people from different walks of life. The only kind of training I have ever been through is in the gym. Vocal training is mostly in the shower. I was a complete bathroom singer. But Manj and I practice a lot in the studio in New Delhi and Canada. Now that my son Anoop has taken to singing we do a lot of family sessions together. Whether performing or teaching, a successful musician needs a background in several musical instruments. Theory and composition classes are almost impossible without some basic skills in piano or keyboard. School music teachers need some basic knowledge of band and orchestra instruments. Even rock musicians need some skills in guitar, bass, keyboards and drums to get along. Although a college degree may not be necessary, a few courses in music theory are well worth the effort. Music has its own written notation and spoken language that has developed over the centuries and is known to musicians throughout the world. Knowledge of intervals, key signatures, chord theory, timing, sight reading and composition

allows you to communicate your ideas to others and will enhance your skills. To become a successful musician, the most important factor is practice and repetition. Unfortunately, many musicians spend their time practicing their mistakes. A cheap digital recorder allows instant feedback that highlights mistakes, inconsistent tone, irregular timing and other problems. In addition to practice, another important skill is performance. It takes a lot of courage to get up in front of other people and make music. A CAREER IN BOTANY

Plants have intrigued people for thousands of years. They provide aesthetic beauty as well as materials for our basic needs. Today our world presents new and complex problems that were never dreamed of a century ago, says Anuja Chavan

R

ecent progress in technology and molecular biology provide powerful new tools that can help us solve some challenging problems. No matter how much we ignore the impending environmental problems and resort to the way of progress by technological advancement, it will always be in our favour to have sustainable development – development without compromising the future of generations to come. And the reason to state all of this is the basic branch which provides fuel to all the major sub-branches in environment; genetics etc for technology by protecting the resources is botany. Also one of the best things about plant science is the number of different specialties and career opportunities from which a person can choose. This diversity allows people with different backgrounds, aptitudes and interest to find satisfying careers in plant biology. More than many other scientific fields, botany continues to provide opportunities for women as well as men. This is the reason, Dr Neelima Patil, the head of department of Botany subject of Z B Patil College, had done her PhD on the freshwater blue green algae of North Maharashtra stating how important and equally payable the study of this subject can be. This interview will make all our young readers understand how a career in botany can be the best outcome for themselves and also for the society.

Class XI and XII, then surely it is very helpful for the student to grasp the subject during graduation. But even if not taken, no harm done, some extra efforts taken in first semester of graduation can cover the gap up. What are the renowned institutions in Maharashtra where the student can pursue this field for graduation and postgraduation? Well, there are a number of colleges where a student can pursue under graduation and get a graduation. In fact in a developed state like Maharashtra, there are many granted and nongranted colleges other than renowned universities which offer this course. But for post-graduation, I would like to recommend students to study in well known universities like Mumbai, Pune, north Maharashtra, Aurangabad etc.

What are the different sub-branches a student can pursue for future studies in this studies? Systematic study of any branch of science necessitates its division into various branches. The botany in early 18th century largely involved the description of plants and their classification, gradually the knowledge about plants expanded and several branches of the subject were conceived. The important branches are morphology – study of external form and features of the plant and its parts, anatomy – study of internal morphology, taxonomy – study of plant classification and relationship among various groups of plants, plant physiology – study of various living processes involving functions of plants, Cytology – deals with the structure of cells and its organelles, the most emerging Genetics – deals with the resemblance between parents and their off-springs and the transmission of character or the hereditary material from the former to the latter, environmentally important branch ecology – study of organism in their natural home or habitat, paleobotany – study of plants growing in Paleozoic era and molecular biology. Moreover, there are some applied and most followed branches of

botany as horticulture, agriculture, forestry, plant histology and economic botany. What are the different field in which an expert in botany can be employed? The major employers of plant biologists are educational institutions, government agencies and industries. Job opportunities usually depend upon educational training and experience. Educational institutions which employ most plant biologists range from high schools and colleges to universities. Most positions for professionals and scientists are in colleges and universities. Government agencies need botanist in many different fields. Plant biologists work in various branches of department of agriculture, including the medical plant resources lab, the germplasm resources lab etc. In fact environmental organisations like nature conservancy too hire botanists. Industry is the third major employer of plant botanist. Drug companies, the oil industry, the chemical industry, the lumber and paper companies, seed and nursery companies, fruit groves, food companies, fermentations industries (including breweries), biological supply houses and biotechnology firms all hire men and women trained in botany. Botany offers many interesting and worthwhile career opportunities. The work is frequently varied and the surroundings pleasant as stated earlier. Because of the great diversity in plant sciences, people with many different background, abilities and interest can find a satisfying career in botany. It may allow you to live and work in the outdoors. A person with a mathematical background might find biophysics, developmental botany, genetics, modeling, or systems ecology to be exciting fields. Someone with an interest in chemistry might become a plant physiologist, plant biochemist, molecular biologist, or chemotaxonomist. Are there any pre-requisite specific knowledge requirements to excel in this field? No specific knowledge, only interest to know more about the subject and readiness to read and enhance you can make one an expert.

Alia Bhatt sports a short skirt and a top like a typical modern girl. The accusations that say clothes provoke men to attack women, is a myth. That is another wonderful aspect of the movie. The Indian value of still not allowing the guy to come closer to her and whisper, "Excuse me," and not letting another kiss her hand, just goes on to prove the efficiency that the youth is proving through its work. The part of the question still hanging in the screen, boldly asking: "Can We?" is a slap to society.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2014 Who is a Reiki healer and what is the practice all about? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by the 'lying on hands' and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing as a form of alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional medical bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring universal energy (reiki) in the form of qi (Japanese: ki) through the palms, which they believe allows for selfhealing and a state of equilibrium. Reiki is based on a ki – a supposed life force that is purely hypothetical. There are two main branches of Reiki, commonly referred to as Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Though differences can be wide and varied between branches and traditions, the primary difference is that the westernised forms use systematised handplacements rather than relying on an intuitive sense of hand-positions which is commonly used by Japanese Reiki branches. Both branches commonly have a threetiered hierarchy of degrees, usually referred to as the First, Second, and Master/Teacher level, all of which are associated with different skills and techniques. So a person who has mastered all the levels of Reiki and has practiced it enough to get the due experience is a Reiki healer. Describe your journey as a Reiki healer and how it has benefitted you? Reiki was the first energy healing practice that I mastered after finishing my medical studies. Reiki is very powerful if properly applied and it is one of the basic steps to enter into the world of Energy Healing. Initially I combined reiki with Ayurveda and it has yielded very positive results. Till date, Reiki is administered by me with a combination of various other Healing sciences. Reiki is simple, easy and gives quick results. The challenge lies in mastering it and administering it with accuracy and precision. How prospective a career is it in a country like India? Reiki Mastership is emerging as the best healing profession all around the world enabling you to grow financially and spiritually as well. Growing dissatisfaction and side effects of modern medicine are pushing people towards alternative methods of Natural Healing in which Reiki is the simplest yet powerful result-oriented healing technique appreciated and adopted by all existing medical systems as complimentary aid. Undoubtedly, the demand for Reiki Masters is growing as several renowned hospitals, nursing homes, health resorts and holistic hospitals have separate, exclusive healing sections for Reiki and other spiritual and holistic healing sciences. How does one become a Reiki healer? Reiki is traditionally taught in three

City of peace

Young and looking to study, work or travel? The city of peace, the city of Chandigarh, has a lot to offer, writes Maria Khatri

C

handigarh was the first planned city of independent India. It is known internationally for its architecture and urban design. This city tops the list of Indian states and Union Territories by per capita income in the country. Chandigarh has so many characteristics to look forward to, from infrastructure to cuisine to shopping and much more. The city is divided appropriately into sectors and each sector has its own significance. The standard of living is probably as high as Mumbai's, but there is also a quality of life here. Chandigarh is highly influenced by the Northern culture, yet it has a very Indo-western feel to it. Any Indian youngster should look at making a career in this province. Life has so much more to offer here. Here’s a closer look at what this city has to offer. Job opportunities Since Chandigarh is a territory shared by two states – Haryana and Punjab – there are many opportunities to explore in the government sector. While I was touring this city I came across a strange fact – Chandigarh doesn’t have much of its own population. The city mostly constitutes settlers from the other states of India. So if you are looking for a career in the government sector and want a relaxed life, try finding opportunities in Chandigarh. Off late the IT sector is also developing at a great pace here. Chandigarh may have high accommodation costs, but other cities have high subsidies and the taxes you have to pay in this state is comparatively low. Education Chandigarh has multiple educational options with several universities to study in. However, most of the locals prefer moving out to Canada, UK or the US for higher education as this is a very common trend followed here. But with faith in my words, I believe Chandigarh

is home to some of the top universities in which you get a good quality education in India. For example, you have the Punjab University, Amity University, IGNOU, etc. I happened to visit Punjab University in Chandigarh and was surprised to see the diversity of courses as the graduation level. So if you are able to accept change, move out of your comfort zone and look at options to study in various parts of India.

Standard of living Chandigarh is the hub of the North and has a brilliant society and surrounding to adapt to a great lifestyle. As a youngster you have so many places to explore and enjoy. There are sectors dedicated to clubbing (24, 17 and 22), to shopping (34), to industrial estate, etc. The lifestyle of Chandigarh is pretty slow in comparison to the other modern cities. You will see teenagers and youngsters out in their best attire after 7.30 pm, walking around the streets and catching up with friends. There are so many pleasant places to sit around in Chandigarh – Sukhna lake, leisure valley, new lake, etc. And mind you, you never have to worry about travelling by your own vehicle because parking is as cheap as Rs 5 and 10 all across Chandigarh with the most perfect parking space allocated to each car. The greenery in Chandigarh really brightens your sight, as this is a sight you rarely get to see in other cities. You can live a good life in Chandigarh with a pay package of approximately Rs 25,000 a month and manage all your expenses comfortably. What surprises me the most about Chandigarh is, in spite of it being a part of India it is so unlike ‘India’. Everything is so systematic with the organised facilities for its residents. Not a single day during my stay there was there a concern about women’s security. In fact

people are very considerate to stringent and wearing a seat belt is police in women and do not allow women to complusory. The work after 8 pm, even in malls. Trouble begins when Alex mistakenly opens the trunk and dons the Scorpion King's ancient bracelet, coveted by the evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). A group of diggers too is on the hunt for the bracelet. They intend to revive Imhotep and allow him to kill the Scorpion King (The Rock), thereby allowing him to control the Scorpion King's army and rule the Earth. But, in order to do all that, they need the bracelet. Meanwhile, the British museum is playing host to the corpse of Imhotep, the Mummy which had previously given Rick and Evelyn a

With this I only wonder why isn’t each of India's cities so well organised? Why shouldn’t each state be governed by the central government to live a life like those fortunate to do so in Chandigarh? hard time. When ancient magic brings Imhotep back to life, a chain of events is set in motion that will lead to the end of the world, thus forcing Rick and Evelyn to dust-off their mummy-defeating skills once again. Now going back in time we have the Scorpion King who has been dormant for many years under control of the Egyptian god Anubis. The Scorpion King will rise again in 1933, which is where we find the O’Connells in Egypt. The fight off with The Scorpion King and Imhotep is jaw dropping and non – stop entertainment.

The patient was being treated for severe injuries and infection and later in the night when no one was around the patient, a hospital staffer allegedly threw him outside near an open drainage, apparently because he was stinking, the staffer added.

nounced a high-level probe into the incident and suspended four health officials, including the Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur and transferred Director of Health Services Dr Kamalpreet Singh. Singh also ordered registration of FIR against the surgeon under whose supervision the camp was organised at Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre where 83 women had undergone surgical procedures. "It's a very unfortunate incident. Prima facie it appears that the incident occurred due to negligence (by doctors). A detailed enquiry will be conducted keeping in view all angles including the quality of the medicines, standard of the surgery, post operative measures and others," he said.

INCREDIBLE INDIA... A Rajasthani artist entertains a tourist arriving by Maharaja Express train, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, on Tuesday.

EW DELHI: The Congress has not invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an international conference it is organising to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, joining the battle with Modi, who it accuses of trying to appropriate freedom movement leaders. The twoday event to highlight the legacy and worldview of the first Prime Minister is being organised on November 17 and 18 and will be attended by a host of international leaders and representatives of various political parties from India and abroad. "We have not given any invitation to the Prime Minister. We have invited all those who truly believe in democracy and the ideals of Nehru," Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said replying to a volley of media questions about whether it has invited Modi and why not. Interestingly, the party has put out the eulogising remarks about Nehru

made by BJP's first Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on the website specially launched for the event today. "Have we not acknowledged Atal Bihari Vajpayee. We are acknowledging all those who have said something meaningful. As a political party, we have our freedom to decide who subscribes to Nehru's views," he said. Sources said that Congress will not invite any leader of BJP and its allies for the event. The party has accused Modi of trying to appropriate leaders of the freedom movement like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Nehru by launching special schemes and diverting attention from their legacy. There is already a National Committee for commemoration of Nehru's 125th birth anniversary chaired by the Prime Minister, which was reconstituted after the new govt came to power.

Nifty At New Closing High

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (November 12, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Tuesday (November 11, 2014) a net 18.40 points (0.22%) and closed at the 8362 point level marking a new closing high. The market opened up with a gap at the 8354 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 8378 points level at 10.33 a.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8321 points level at 12.16 p.m. It then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session and moved in a range of 57 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were gainers, while 22 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in realty and banking stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 4.09%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 768 were gainers, 726 were losers and 38 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is at the slow D line (neutral if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 8144 points level. The next support is at the 8026 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8372 points level. The next resistance is at the 8419 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8354 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8330. Support (2) = 8298. Resistance (1) = 8387. Resistance (2) = 8411.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a fifth consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of an upmove unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 8372 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday) There is a possibility that it could find some resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 8341) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 8126) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 8031) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 7237) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. The IFC issuance labeled as 'Masala bonds' set a triple-A benchmark for offshore rupee issuances and paves the way for more foreign investment to help meet India’s private sector development needs By A Business Reporter

I

FC, a member of the World Bank, has issued a 10-year, 10 billion Indian rupee bond (equivalent to $163million) to increase foreign investment in India, mobilizing international capital markets to support infrastructure development in the country. The “Masala bonds” mark the first rupee bonds listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are

the longest- dated bonds in the offshore rupee markets, building on earlier offshore rupee issuances by IFC at three-, five-, and seven-year maturities. Proceeds from the offering will support a forthcoming infrastructure bond issuance by Axis Bank. Tarun Bajaj, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, India said: “IFC is a key development partner as we continue to focus on deepening the capital markets. The IFC Masala bonds set a triple-A benchmark for offshore rupee issuance’s and pave the way for more foreign investment to help meet India’s private sector development needs." George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, United Kingdom said: “Increasing our links with India has been a personal priority for me which is why I went to see Prime Minister Modi earlier this year to promote our economic relations and gave my backing to the

new Gandhi statue in parliament square. If we can create these strong financial links between our two countries as well, then the ties will be deeper still which is why I have been personally pushing for rupee bonds to be issued in the UK markets and I am delighted this is now going ahead.” Jin-Yong Cai, Executive Vice President and CEO, IFC said: “This bond issue demonstrates the powerful role that capital markets can play in linking international savings to infrastructure investment. The strong demand from investors signals continued momentum for the Indian economy.” The bonds were issued under IFC’s $2 billion offshore rupee program. The bonds yield 6.3 percent. J.P. Morgan is the sole arranger for the issuance. IFC issued the bonds in London to leverage the city’s standing as a premier financial center. The vast majority of investors are European insurance companies.

Reliance Jio’s Entry To Upset Pricing Cart Do not foresee a re-run of the tariff wars of 2009-13, which led to a severe decline in industry tariffs, but entry in the telecom space may force 20% fall in data tariffs, says Fitch By A Business Reporter

G

lobal rating agency Fitch yesterday said the imminent entry of Reliance Jio into the telecom space will see a likely 20 % fall in data tariffs, but will not have any impact on the credit profile of the top four incumbents in the medium term as their revenue is on an uptick on ris-

otton prices in India have witnessed a consistent fall for the past few months. “The fall in prices can be attributed to the expected record harvest this season owing to increased acreage, subdued demand from the domestic mills and fall in export demand from the top buyer China. India’s bumper crop, rising international inventories and subdued demand from China is likely to drive the cotton prices further down. The domestic cotton prices have already gone below the MSP and are likely to slide further with the expected bumper crop. China is the biggest consumer of the Indian cotton and with China cutting its cotton imports, India may have to look for other markets for its production” says Care Ratings.

ing voice tariffs and improving regulatory environment. "The likely entry of Reliance Jio (in 1H of 2015) will intensify competition in the data segment, and may cause data tariffs to decline by at least 20 % for the top four telcos- Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and RCom," Fitch said in a report . Reliance Jio will focus largely on data and may have a limited impact on the incumbents' core voice business, given a weak "voice-over-LTE" technology ecosystem and lack of affordable 4G-compatible handsets, it said, but added that "It does not foresee a re-run of the tariff wars of 2009-13, which led to a severe decline in industry tariffs." However, the report said the outlook for state-run telcos and weaker unprofitable private sector ones is negative due to their unviable business models, high cost structure, weak spectrum assets and large capex requirements. "Weaker, unprofitable operators will seek mergers amid Ebitda losses, lack of 3G/4G spectrum assets, and likely relaxation of M&A restrictions...Six operators are likely to emerge from the industry shake-out, as 10-12 operators are unsustainable," Fitch said, adding, it expects the top four telcos to increase their revenue market share to around 83 % in 2015 from 79 % in 2014 of the USD30-billion industry. Industry revenue will grow by at a mid-single-digit in 2015, driven by data services. The top four telcos' average operating margin will be mostly unchanged at 32-33 % in 2015 against 32 % in 2014 as a decline in data tariffs will offset a gradual rise in voice tariffs, it said. The top four telcos will generate a mini-

mal free cash flow margin due to higher capex and flat operating income while the industry capex/revenue ratio could rise as fast-growing data traffic requires supporting investment in 2015. However, the outlook for the top four may turn negative if pricebased competition returns in the voice segment. It could turn negative if the government auctions a lower-than-expected quantity of spectrum in February, as that could force the incumbents to aggressively bid to secure their licences which expire next fiscal.

Rule-Change Will Shave 40 Bps Off Retail NBFC Profitability RBI move to align regulations and enhance disclosures structurally positive, says Crisil By A Business Reporter

T

he revised regulatory framework for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) announced by the Reserve Bank of India on Monday, will slice around 40 basis points (100 basis points equal 1 percentage point) of their profitability gradually over the next four years till March 31, 2018. That’s because their provi-

sioning will increase with the recognition norm for non-performing assets (NPAs) made more stringent to 90+ days past due (dpd) from 180+ earlier. Nevertheless, the three year transition period will allow NBFCs to cushion impact on their financial profiles. Overall, higher capital requirements, regulatory alignment with banks, enhanced disclosure requirements and tighter corporate governance norms will strengthen the NBFC sector structurally in the medium term. CRISIL estimates that if retail NBFCs were to recognise gross NPAs on a 90+ dpd basis, their gross NPAs would stand at 7.8 per cent as against the reported gross NPAs of 3.7 per cent as on March 31, 2014. Says Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings, “NBFCs will

re-calibrate their business models and intensify collection efforts in the early-delinquency buckets to reduce NPAs, however, the profile of their borrowers and the nature of the underlying product categories may limit any such improvement on a structural basis.” The increased provisioning will reduce the return on managed assets ratio of retail NBFCs to 1.4 per cent by fiscal 2018, compared with 1.8 per cent in the last fiscal. But the one-time flexibility to reschedule loans could provide some breathing space to NBFCs. If judiciously used – and keeping in mind the underlying customer segments – the impact on profitability may be materially lower. The revised guidelines also stipulate higher minimum Tier I capital adequacy ratio (CAR) for large NBFCs (asset size more than Rs.5 billion), at 10 per cent by March 31, 2018 compared with 7.5 per cent currently. Says Ms. Rupali Shanker, Director, CRISIL Ratings, “Large CRISILrated retail NBFCs had an average Tier I CAR of above 14 per cent as at March 31, 2014, and hence will manage this transition comfortably over the next few years. However, the cushion over the new regulatory minimum has clearly narrowed and any sharp growth in loan book or a decline in internal accruals will quickly change the scenario.” Higher capital adequacy requirements coupled with alignment of asset classification and provisioning norms will lower systemic risks in the NBFC sector. The revised guidelines also prescribe material enhancement in disclosure levels for large NBFCs and several changes in corporate governance practices. These are largely in line with some of the norms applicable to banks. Better transparency and corporate governance will reduce information risk and will enhance stakeholder confidence in the NBFC sector.

BIRTHDAY FORECAST: Business is going to take upward swing and improve greatly. You will get a chance to sell your ideas or your product very handsomely. You will enter into a partnership especially if it is from overseas and it will be highly rewarding in terms of money and recognition. You are going to meet a strikingly attractive person, followed by a fiery and sensuous romance. Your health will be generally good. BABIES BORN TODAY: Will be obedient, sweet natured, attractive, healthy and long-lived. Generally, fortunate, helpful, respectful and will not tolerate dishonesty from others. Will be creative, artistic and an interest in medicine. Happiness, fame and success in life are indicated. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Look forward to making new alliances in new business ventures. Those working independently or as consultants will sign a major contract. A new friendship could create problems with a close associate who will be feeling very possessive about you. Handle the situation tactfully.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): With the help of a colleague you will be able to catch up with pending work with a particularly difficult assignment. You may have an opportunity to travel on a professional assignment. You will have a good chance of winning over an opponent if you use a bit of tact and set aside your ego. Improve your stance which seems intimidating right now.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You are in a position of strength and advantage in your work and career. Work diligently and beware of those trying to distract you from what you should be doing. Unexpected news from an unknown source will make you feel good. Gains from your efforts are indicated. Even though Love life is quite exciting, some of you are likely to get caught up in a secret liaison which is unavoidable.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): You are quite excited to start a new assignment, which is somewhat challenging. The successful completion of this will bring bonus rewards. Business people will come across an opportunity to make good amount of money from a trading transaction. This may be a onetime deal. You may be torn between duty and responsibility towards family. It is an effort for you to comply but is worth it for all-round happiness.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Normal business activity will assure a steady income. A proposal that can generate some quick money will have to be firmly rejected as it may conflict with the way you work and think. There will be profits no doubt but you will lose your peace of mind. Family life may be a bit strained. Accept rather than change things for what you would like them to be. Bide your time right now.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): You will come across a profitable idea that can be developed quite favorably. Turn your attention to hobbies or extracurricular activities that give you satisfaction. Family problems that have been bothering you for long will also become easier to solve. Trying times in love relationships are over and you can look forward to the good times ahead. Evening has some good prospects for you.

At business meeting or on negotiation table your ideas and plans will be received well. You may have to attend social gathering to fulfill an obligation to a family member. You will meet some new interesting people.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Do not be in rush to conclude a new contract. You need to scrutinize each and every aspect, including its viability. It seems someone is trying to pass on a liability giving you false assurances of quick gains. It would be better to stick to routine activities at this juncture. Most things in your life are going along smoothly but personal relationships cause tension. Your mate or beloved could have a problem. Try to give things a more personal touch.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Perhaps you are being too cautious when discussing terms for a new proposal. Small profits will add up to bigger ones later. You have other things on your mind other than routine work. An outing will expose you to something good if you are inclined and game for a new experience. Throw caution to the winds and follow fancy of the heart, you will not be disappointed. Look forward to something amazing happening. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): You must approach people with open and impartial view, and accept them as they are. You will be in a much more positive frame of mind that helps win others trust. You will also get a chance to do things that you enjoy. New situations bring into your life a person that may become a good friend. You will enjoy good health and a feeling of contentment. The young at heart will have their share of romance and adventure though there is no certainty in any liaison.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Business negotiations for fresh projects go through smoothly. Those in the field of sales and marketing will be in limelight. You are likely to get monetary gains through fresh projects or agency work. Some of you may be planning a trip abroad for work. A new friendship could create problems with a close associate who will be feeling very possessive about you. You will have to tactfully manage the situation.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): In a discussion, be patient and try not to argue. A career change is also indicated, but the benefits may not be immediate. Patience and forbearance now will be rewarding later. There could be some good news concerning a youngster. Encourage those who look up to you. For the single a person you know has been a lot on your mind of late. There is no harm in making the first move to be touch. You can expect a warm response.

Khade set for comeback at Nationals K OLKATA: All eyes will be on 2010 Asian Games bronze medallist Virdhawal Khade, who will make a comeback after about two years, even as the country’s top swimmers, including Sandeep Sejwal, would vie for top honours in the five-day 68th Senior National Aquatic Championship beginning at the Subhas Sarobar tomorrow. As far as the championship race is concerned, a depleted Karnataka, the reigning champions for last 23 years, will face a big competition

from Railways, Maharashtra and Services. Now a Tahsildar in the Maharashtra government, the lanky 6’3” tall Kolhapur swimmer Khade had pulled out of the Incheon Asian Games this year but his absence was filled in by Delhi lad Sejwal who won a bronze in the 50m breast stroke. On a high after his Asian Games medal, Sejwal will also be here to bolster Railways field while Khade, who is the national record holder in

all free-style sprints from 50m to 400m as well as in the 50m butterfly stroke in which he had a bronze in Guangzhou, will also look to get into the act. It will be a testing time for the Beijing Olympian Khade as the nationals will also serve as a qualifying meet for the FINA World Championships to be held in Russia in July next year through which one can make the cut for Rio Olympics 2016. Khade has started training under his coach Nihar Ameen in Banga-

lore and it would be intersting to see how he fares after a big gap.The nationals will also be a comeback meet for Delhi swimmer and holder of several national records Richa Mishra after serving a two-year ban for flunking dope tests. Among the promising ones, 21-year old Railways lad Sajan Prakash, Madhu PS of the Services, Saurabh Sagvekar of Maharashtra, 15-year-old Damini Gowda of Karnataka, and 14-yearold Maana Patel of Gujarat will also look to sizzle in the pool.

OLKATA: Hosts India might have outplayed them in the first three ODIs but Sri Lankan team management is keen to include experienced spinner Ajantha Mendis in the playing XI for the fourth ODI scheduled on Thursday. Mendis, incidentally was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders during IPL-1 and had experience of playing at the Eden Gardens. “I had a good opportunity while playing for KKR at this ground. The pitch offered turn and we would also get a bit of bounce. I always had a bit of help from this track. We will try to do our best,” Mendis said after their practice session today.

Talking about the match pitch, Mendis said,”It’s not bad. the wicket has a bit of help for the spinners. Hope we can do something.” Once known as ‘Mystery spinner’ before he went off the boil, Mendis is hopeful that he would make some difference to the Lankan bowling attack which is thin on experience as far as taking on the mighty Indian batting line-up is concerned. “If I get an opportunity, I will bowl in the line and length with a bit of variation because India possess a very good batting line-up. We will try to put the pressure with our spin attack,” he added. “It’s about salvaging some pride and take the momentum into the upcoming England series and subsequently the World Cup in

BCCI flourished in Eden, but hijacked by TN: Bedi

K

OLKATA: Taking at dig at Indian Cricket Board’s presidentin-exile N Srinivasan, spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi today said it was a mystery to see the BCCI, which was born in Delhi and flourished at the Eden Gardens here, being hijacked by Tamil Nadu. “I think it’s pertinent to say that the BCCI was born in Delhi at the Roshanara Club. That was a historical moment but then it flourished at the Eden Gardens. But how the BCCI got hijacked by Tamil Nadu is a mystery for me,” said Bedi, who is staunch critic of Srinivasan. Talking on the sidelines of a postal stamp release to commemorate 150 years of the Eden Gar-

dens, Bedi rated historic ground here as one of the best in the world.“I think this (Eden) is the place, this is the most electrifying cricket centre in the world. Eden Gardens gives Melbourne Cricket Ground a lot to chase. I’m very proud to be here. It’s a very nostalgic moment. It has a sporting history,” the former India skipper said at the function which was also attended by Dilip Vengsarkar, Erapalli Prasanna, B S Chandrasekhar and West Indies pace legend Michael Holding. “I have fond memories of Eden Gardens. I made my Test debut here on January 1 and during the Test we had fire in the stands and teargas in the dressing room. That for me was really baptism by fire.”

Australia-New Zealand next year.” “I came for the last two games. We will at least try to win these two matches because we have a lot of matches on the way. We will try to do our best. Everyone will try to win this game with the World Cup and the England series is next to come. Hopefully, everyone does well and get in shape ahead of the two big events.” Mendis was not part of the side in the first three ODIs and asked about his exclusion, he said,”I have no idea as I only joined the team yesterday. I will give my best shot on this wicket. Everyone will try to win this game.” With ICC’s crackdown on bowlers with suspect action, Mendis said: “I think I’m okay as I’ve not failed. I don’t want to make any further com-

ments.” Asked whether the absence batsman of our team but we have of Kumar Sangakkara, who has been Mahela (Jayawardene) in very good sent home to freshen up for the Eng- form. DD ropes in Amre as Kirsten’s deputy, Eric Simons removed N

EW DELHI: IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils has roped in former India batsman and current Mumbai Ranji Trophy coach Praveen Amre as their assistant coach for the upcoming season, removing South African Eric Simons, who was with the franchise for five editions, starting 2010. Amre, who is rated as one of the best coaches in the domestic circuit has been a key force behind the success of players like Ajinkya Rahane, Robin Uthappa, Naman Ojha to name a few. He is country’s first professional coach, who deals with players facing technical problems on a one-on-one basis. “I am sure that it will be great experience to work with the Delhi boys. We have quality players like JP Duminy, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary, Saurabh Ti-

wary. I am hopeful of providing them with technical expertise and help Daredevils do well in IPL-8,” Amre told PTI from Ahmedabad, where he is with Mumbai’s one-day team, playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Amre feels that having worked with most of these boys will prove to be a great help and his experience of working with Allan Donald at Pune Warriors will also prove to be beneficial. “I have worked with guys like Manoj, Saurabh when I was the India A coach. An Indian coach can be a good communicator. Also it will be a great opportunity to learn from someone like Gary Kirsten, who had made significant contribution as India coach,” said Amre. Asked about his role as a personal coach, who is involved in one-on-

one sessions with his wards like Rahane, Uthappa, Ojha, Amre said, “I have learnt from my guru Ramakant Achrekar about focussing on solving the problems of the players. “If there is some technical problem in batting, however complicated it might be, but it’s not rocket science! It can be sorted out. When I see Ajinkya, Robin or Naman doing well, I feel like a doctor, who has prescribed correct medicines for his patients!” Asked about what exactly went wrong with the Daredevils last season where they ended as wooden spooners, Amre said, “I believe the balance of the side needs to be looked into because we have talent in abundance in this line-up. I think this season will be different from the last one and we would do well.”

I am no cricketing God: Tendulkar L

ONDON: Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar may be cricketing God for many of his fans but the batting legend has stressed that he is “normal”. “I’m no cricketing god. I’ve made lots of mistakes on the field. I’ve loved playing cricket, but I’m normal Sachin and that’s how it should be,” he told BBC Sport in an interview released here today. “I consider myself fortunate that people like me, people love me. It’s a special thing. I’m blessed I think. God has been kind to me. I don’t

want to take anything for granted. I am only thankful to everyone for being so kind to me and it’s never enough,” he added in reference to a question on hero worship. The highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket was at the Lord’s Cricket Ground last week for the official launch of his autobiography ‘Playing It My Way’. During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live channel he described his life after retirement as “rather hectic”. “I’m getting to know a different

side of life. For 24 years I was focusing on cricket and nothing else. I feel the first innings of my life was playing cricket and chasing my own dream - and the dream was to win the World Cup. The second innings of my life, the post cricketing years, is to try and give back something to the people who have wished well for me,” he said. Tendulkar also reiterated his faith in the lengthier form of the game, describing Test cricket as the “main course” and other versions like “starters and desserts”.

INDICATOR OF PROGRESS WILL BE WIN VS AUSTRALIA IN CT: OLTMANS

N

EW DELHI: Indian hockey’s high performance director Roelant Oltmans says the team’s series win over Australia is a positive sign but repeating the feat against the World Champions in the upcoming Champions Trophy will determine the squad’s progress. “It is surely a positive result for the team. Everyone in the world including Australia would not have have thought of this outcome, although they are in the the process of rebuilding after the World Cup,” Oltmans told PTI today after the squad returned home following a 31 win in the four-match test series. Asked how he rated the result, the Dutchman said: “All the 21 players played and the outcome is good. But we have to be realistic on what it means. Does it mean too much than just a series win against Australia? I would say if we are able to beat Australia in Champions Trophy, then we can say we have taken major steps forward,” said the renowned expert. Oltmans was quick to add that December 6-14 Champions Trophy in Bhubaneshwar will be a much tougher test for the team. India are in Pool B alongside Netherlands, Germany and Argentina in the eight-nation tournament.

“It (Champions Trophy) is a competition lot different than a friendly series. We are in a group having Germany and surprise of World Cup Argentina, so it will be tough from day one. After a short break, we will resume training for the tournament,” he said, while choosing not to talk about the target for the premier event.“I know that you guys always want to talk about the outcome. The important thing for me is that the team is showing steady progress. There is still lot of time left to talk about the outcome anyway.” Oltmans felt India executed their plans better than Australia, who are in a transititional phase, after their World Cup triumph. “All these boys, who were playing for Australia, were probables who

Pakistan leads NZ by 319 after 3 days of 1st Test

A

BU DHABI: Fast bowler Rahat Ali’s rich haul of 4-22 helped to give Pakistan firm control of the first Test against New Zealand today despite opening batsman Tom Latham hitting a fighting maiden Test century. New Zealand failed to cope with Ali’s reverse swing in a miserly bowled 17 overs of left-arm swing, and was all out for 262 late on the third day. Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar chipped in with 3-79 as New Zealand’s top order found it tough in its first ever Test in the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan, which declared at 5663, didn’t enforce the follow-on and stretched its lead to 319 by reach-

ing 15 without loss at stumps. New Zealand resumed from 15-0 overnight, and Latham escaped two tough catch chances early before hitting 103 off 222 balls with 13 fours. Corey Anderson made a rapid 48 off 70 balls with eight fours, but he and Latham fell to Ali after putting on 83 runs for the fourth wicket, New Zealand’s best partnership, during a brief aggressive batting spell in the second session. On his overnight five, Latham’s hard push was dropped by Azhar Ali at forward short leg, and on 32, wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed couldn’t hold onto a thick edge off Mohammad Hafeez’s offspin.

can make the Champions Trophy. They have not played much together but it was surely not a second string side,” pointed out Oltmans. Indians are often found wanting against the speed of top teams such as Australia, Netherlands and Germany. Asked to dissect the performance of the team, Oltmans said he was not outrightly surprised at the win. “I have said it from the beginning that they have a lot of potential, though you can see the issues is to translate potential into performance at the highest level. “The domestic tournaments in India are a different ball game. Guys who are with us recognise the difference and they know what they need to be doing to overcome the gap between international and domestic hockey,” said Oltmans. He hoped for more bilateral series of this nature leading to the Rio Olympics in 2016. “The team is getting better in execution of skills. We were able to hold possession better than before, especially when you playing against a team like Australia, there is a lot of pressure on defence, that can lead to loss of possession. “I must tell you that our boys are now able to control the ball more. In the first game, we didn’t do that and therefore we lost (0-4). After that, there was gradual progression,” Oltmans concluded.

Victorious Indian hockey team returns home N EW DELHI: Indian men’s hockey team that stunned world champions Australia 3-1 in a test series returned home to a rousing reception by Hockey India (HI) and fans and here today. The Sardar Singh–led team put up stupendous show after losing the first test. It was second big achievement for the side in recent times after winning the Asian Games gold medal in Incheon. “I am extremely happy with the way our team has performed in the entire series. And there could be no better gift to my completion of

200 international caps than this memorable win,” India skipper Sardar Singh. “This will act as a motivation for the boys to give a better performance in the upcoming Champions Trophy. I am confident that the boys will perform well in the upcoming tournament,” Sardar said. Congratulating the team for their superb performance, Hockey India Secretary General Md. Mushtaque Ahmad said, “Team India had a good game against Australia which is a good sign of confidence and control.”

The injury has robbed Mary Kom a chance to win her sixth medal at the event. “I’m happy skipping the meet as I’m not fully fit. There’s no point going there and return emptyhanded. UMBAI: A settled defensive line up has been a big advantage for the Indian team in its resurgence in world hockey, feels seasoned full back V Raghunath. “The defence has played together for quite some time — one and a half to two years — and the understanding among myself, Rupinder, Kothajit, Gurbaj and Birender Lakra has improved a lot which is very important. Our combination has come out very well,” said Raghunath here today. “We understand each other’s plus and minus points very well. You need time to do it. We try to cover up for each other which is more important as it’s a team game. If we don’t concede goals, we can win maximum number of matches, that’s the idea,” the 26-year-old drag-flick expert explained. Raghunath played for his employers Indian Oil in the ongoing All

India Bombay Gold Cup tournament here barely four hours after landing in Mumbai from Australia via Delhi after taking part in the four-Test series Down Under. India had registered a historic 3-1 series victory over Australia. Raghunath reminded coach Terry Walsh’s words that the series win in Australia was only a small step in India’s preparation for the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 for which the team qualified by winning the coveted gold medal in the Incheon Asian Games last month. “We have a target of playing against strong teams like Australia, Germany, Holland. India really needs to play these teams to find out the level of improvement over the past one year. This is the first step in the build-up to Rio Olympics, our coach (Terry Walsh) has said,” Raghunath said. The Karnataka-born player said

all the players put their best foot forward in the series Down Under. “Everyone’s personal best has given the best result in Australia. Forwards came up with very good goals and defence conceded only one goal in the last three games after the loss (0-4) in the first. The defence has worked out very well,” said Raghunath. “After a long time we won a Test series in Australia. The team was very good. We also went all out as we wanted to check where we stand in international hockey. The boys have proved we have capability, fitness, skill level and strength to come to the top at the international level.” Asked about a suitable back up to India’s number one custodian P Sreejesh, Raghunath said that the untested Harjot Singh of Punjab was tried out in the Test series in Australia and performed very well in the second match that India won. “I want to say the first match we won in Australia was with the second goalkeeper. He made some wonderful saves. His consistent level is coming up,” he said. Raghunath said the key now was to maintain the same level and improve on the weaknesses before next month’s Champions Trophy tournament in Odisha. “We should concentrate on keeping up this level and put up our personal best show in the (December 6-14) Champions Trophy (in Bhubaneswar) as a build up for Rio. We have go work on the grey areas before Champions Trophy and put up a good show,” he said. “Next year, Australia will be coming which is good for Indian hockey.”

beating Carlsen in Classical chess game as the last victory by five times world champion over the Norwegian had come way back in 2010 under this format. For the first time in his world championship matches against Anand, Carlsen went for the theoretical duel and was duly pun-

ished in a well analysed variation. For the records, it was a Queen's gambit declined by Carlsen, a natural choice with a full point cushion to back him. Anand went for a deeply analysed variation and was pleasantly surprised to find Carlsen game. The players followed a 2013 game played between Levon

Aronian and Michael Adams and it was Carlsen who did not seem to have keep the track of this game well. While going behind on time, Carlsen found the right manoeuvres but Anand was still in his preparation. On move 20, the new idea was revealed by Anand which was a big improvement on the existing game in the position. Carlsen had to again sink in long thoughts intermittently during the rest of the game as one or the other problem was posed by Anand with a well-supported passed

pawn on the seventh rank. Anand kept the momentum ticking without any further slips and piled on the pressure in almost Carlsenesque-style – giving the Norwegian a taste of his own medicine. For once Carlsen was on the receiving end he could only delay the inevitable. Making matters worse at this point was the clock that was ticking away and Anand sealed the issue after Carlsen made a blunder on move 28. Anand swapped a piece and it was all over in 34 moves.

Germany’s World Cup win immortalized in film B

ERLIN: Germany’s World Cup winners were given the Hollywood treatment for the premiere of a film celebrating their victory. Players, coaching staff, football emissaries and invited guests gathered at glitzy Potsdamer Platz in Berlin yesterday to see “Die Mannschaft” (The Team), a film that reveals some of the more intimate details from the side’s tournament success. “You will learn that you can only be successful as a team,” coach Joachim Loew said on the red carpet, repeating the mantra that carried his side to victory in Brazil four months before. The players arrived all wearing dark suits, shirts and ties - perhaps an attempt to help the golden trophy that they proudly carried shine even more. Fans were lined up outside the cinema to greet the arrival of the players. Mario Goetze, whose goal in extra time in the final against Argentina secured the trophy, received the loudest screams from those who braved the November chill to collect autographs. Christoph Kramer in particular was looking forward to seeing the film, in part be-

cause he couldn’t remember the final after suffering a head injury during the game. Before the film started, FIFA president Sepp Blatter paid tribute to Brazil for hosting “the best World Cup in years, despite all the negative things that were said before it.” “As soon as the first ball was kicked, 200 million Brazilians were suddenly football fans again,” Blatter said. The film itself revealed small behind-the-scene details that helped contribute to Germany’s fourth World Cup win - its first as a reunified country.
