Priyadarshini flyover Sena non-committal on land identified to be restored soon by govt for Thackeray memorial By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he Priyadarshini flyover at Nepean Sea Road, one of the major flyovers in South Mumbai, will soon be restored by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a cost of Rs 3.78 crore. The flyover is damaged and needs urgent repairs, said civic officials. It is an important bridge connecting the Petit Hall, Mount Pleasant Road, Nepean Road, Manav Mandir Road and Walkeshwar Road. It was built by state government’s public works department (PWD) about 40 to 45 years ago. The bridge is always occupied with heavy traffic and people as it has the Priyadarshini Park on one side and illegal slums on the other. At several places, cracks have appeared on this bridge, due to the corrosion of
the iron rods. The BMC had appointed M/s Pentacle Consultants as technical consultants to suggest measures for repairing the bridge. According to their report, the bridge bearings have failed due to dislocation and bending. In addition to this, the expansion joints have also been damaged. The BMC had received three bids for the repair work of Priyadarshini bridge, of which M/s Deo Construction (India) has bagged the contract with a bid of Rs 3.78 crore. The proposal will be tabled before the civic standing committee meeting for approval on Wednesday. The bidder has quoted a price 12 per cent below the base price. The contract period for the repairs is six months including the monsoon. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

rotesting at an article published in a city tabloid on Monday where the Dean of Sion hospital Dr Avinash Supe was accused of being involved in a scam, doctors at the hospital wore black ribbons and gathered at the car parking area of the hospital, voicing their support to their dean. “Dr Supe is the best dean we have ever had. He is a man of integrity. But for the headline and the use of his photograph, nowhere in the article has Dr Supe's name appeared. Nowhere his in-
volvement in this type of scam has been written about. This has adversely affected the reputation of the hospital and a well-known senior doctor. We have written letters of protest to the media house and to the BMC officials to take necessary action. We will also write our feedback in the website of the newspaper,” said Dr Alok Sharma, Head of Department, Neurosurgery. More than 500 protestors that comprised doctors, medical students, nurses and other staff got together on Monday to show solidarity for Dr Supe.

The MMRDA needs land for the proposed Vidhan Bhavan Metro station near Mantralaya for which it has sent notices to some of the political parties that have their offices near Mantralaya. Speaking to newspersons, Sena MP Anil Desai admitted to having received the MMRDA notice and added that the party would meet MMRDA metropolitan commissioner U P S Madan soon. He added that the party's Shivalaya office is ideally located and is at short distance away from the Mantralaya. Desai added that if the party were to shift the office to some other location, the
close proximity with Mantralaya will be lost. He instead advised that the MMRDA shift the location of its car-shed to some other location. Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar too stated that the MMRDA notice is not clear in its content and that he would meet the MMRDA commissioner in a couple of days and then take a decision.

A silent message
While the government wants to reform India's banking system, the commoners are left waiting for even the slightest privileges from bank employees – and India's government bank at that. Our friend here recently visited a bank, very enthusiastically wanting to use the recently launched green channel counter to deposit some money. For the uninitiated, the Green Channel Counter (GCC), according to the bank, aims at providing customers with “a simple, secure and quick way of executing daily banking transactions. It enhances customer ease as there is no need to remember the 11 digit account number or carry passbook, fill in pay in slips/withdrawal forms, etc. Only the ATM cum Debit Card and PIN is needed to identify a Customer and his/her Bank Account. It is a counter manned by a Teller where a Transaction Processing Device(TPD) is attached to the terminal. Customer swipes the Shopping cum Debit Card, selects a particular transaction and enters the amount and the PIN. Post authentication, the transaction gets transferred to the Teller’s
terminal who enters denominations of cash to be paid/received, then pays/receives cash and completes the transaction. The customer is provided with a printed receipt generated from TPD. This receipt is much smaller than traditional voucher. Moreover, as only one receipt is printed per transaction, there is zero paper wastage.” “Customers can use the Green Channel Counter without queues and without taking the token. They may simply walk up to the counter, swipe their card and execute the transaction. Also it has been observed that while normal branch banking transactions take 2 to 4 minutes for completion, a transaction routed through the GCC takes less than a minute,” the bank further states. However, when our friend tried to use the GCC, he was rudely asked to stand in the queue and wait for at least 20 minutes along with the regular customers who were using the traditional way for transactions. Not wanting to argue, our friend decided to stand patiently till his turn came and then gave the Teller a deposit slip instead of the card intended for GCC. The Teller immediately made a grumpy face saying, “Why do you want to increase our work when you have the card for GCC?” But before this gentleman could answer, she realised her mistake of increasing his work by asking him to unnecessarily stand in the queue. The message was conveyed. Period.

Congress party workers from Palghar and Dahanu had rung up the party's toll free number 18002662020 to enroll themselves as active members of the party. The Shiv Sena has already welcomed back its former BMC mayor Shubha Raul into the party fold. Raul had quit the party before the Assembly elections and had joined MNS following differences with local Sena leaders. Sources disclosed that all these attempts by the BJP and Sena are aimed at strengthening their support base ahead of the 2017 BMC elections. Meanwhile, talks between BJP and Sena have begun over who should contest which of the four legislative council seats that go to polls on January 30. Sources in the BJP disclosed that the party is unwilling to let go its claim over the two seats previously
held by Tawde and Mumbai party unit president Ashish Shelar. The BJP-Sena will have to leave the seat earlier held by Vinayak Mete for him to contest again. That leaves only one seat for the Sena to contest and also needs to ensure election of Minister for Industries Subhash Desai as he is not a member of either of the two houses of the state legislature. According to BJP sources, the Sena ideally should field Desai from Bandra East constituency, the seat that has fallen vacant on account of the demise MLA Prakash aka Bala Sawant. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India yesterday also announced by-election for the Mukhed Assembly seat which had fallen vacant due to the demise of sitting BJP MLA Govind Rathod soon after the elections were held in October last year. The by-election will be held on February 13.

lish it. The civic body had given an estimated Rs 60 lakh to this firm. The BMC had given the contract to make a primary geo-technical survey of the dam site, fiscal and technical feasibility study, a project report, for submitting to the state government. For at least two years, the civic body had made the documentation of the project file and sent it to the state government which was returned
every time it was sent and the electricity generation project was finally given to private company Ms Mahalaxmi Konal Urja Pvt Ltd. In 2006, following a meeting with Executive Engineer, Thane region, he had directed the civic body to study and make a feasibility report to build a electricity generation project. Since the civic body built the dam, the land alongside the dam also belongs to the civic body and its

undertaking is already in the electricity distribution, so the civic body was supposed to be given permission for construction of the electricity generation plant. While constructing the dam, the civic body had built the shafts for the electricity plant and spent huge amounts on it. Meanwhile, the state had excluded this project from the list of projects carried out by the private companies on its official web site.

Minor rape: Accused gets 7 yrs in jail The accused who was known to the victim, picked her from GTB station, took her to a shanty at Antop Hill and raped her By Santia Dudi

he Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSOA) court presided over by POCSOA judge Chanda A Nathani, on Monday, sentenced 32year-old K D Raja for raping a 17-year-old minor on Ganesh Chathurti on September 8, 2013. The accused was framed under rape charge (IPC 376), criminal intimidation (IPC 506/2), voluntarily causing hurt (IPC 323), procreation of minor girl (IPC 366 a) and committing penetrative sexual assault on a minor (POCSOA section 4 and 8). On the night of September 8, 2013, the victim was going from Guru Tegba-
hadur (GTB) Nagar to Wadala. The accused K D Raja along with a girl Shilpa came to the GTB station and t offered to drop the victim home. The three of them went on the accused's bike. Apparently the accused took the victim to a shanty located at Antop hill. Shilpa left later and another man came to the spot. The accused tied the mouth and the hands of the victim and raped her, as the other man stood outside the shanty to keep a watch. The accused then dropped the victim in the middle of nowhere. As soon as the victim reached home, she narrated the entire episode to her mother and her mother took her to the Antop police station to file an FIR. More than 10 public witnesses were produced in the court. The sole testimony and the medical report played a crucial role in the case. Injuries on the victim's private parts established the rape. The defence counsel advocate Trupti Shetty told the ADC, “In this case some weird incidents took place.
MBMC abruptly cancels interview
Aspiring medicos who came all the way from Nanded, Latur, Kolhapur for a walk-in interview were greeted by a cancellation notice at the MBMC HQ
For example, the final arguments were over in the month of August 2014. But almost after one month, the prosecution moved an application seeking to re-examine the Investigation Officer (IO) regarding the statement of Shilpa, the other girl who accompanied the accused on the night of the incident. And though it was obvious that the prosecution had already heard the defence arguments and was well aware of the loopholes in the case, the application was still accepted and the reexamination took place. I have never come across such a thing in my career.” She further said, “Though the prosecution produced the victim's birth certificate, it was unable to prove the authenticity of the certificate. Our case was that the girl was not a minor. Also all her statements were contradicting. What she told the police was totally different from what she said in front of the magistrate. And while deposing in the Sessions Court, her statement changed again.” Azad Shrivastav | ADC

hat was meant to be a walk-ininterview for the recruitment to various posts in the medical services of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), turned into disappointment for hundreds of aspirants after the interview process was abruptly cancelled by the civic authorities on Monday. The MBMC had floated newspaper advertisements on December 12, 2014, for walk-in interviews to fill 84 posts including that of Medical officers, X-Ray, ECG Lab Technicians, Nurses, GNMs, Pediatricians and Physicians for its civic hospitals in Bhayandar and Mira Road. The aspirants were supposed to appear for a direct interview recruitment process on January 12 to 13 at the main administrative building of the MBMC in Bhayandar. However, hundreds of job aspirants including those who reached Bhayandar from far flung places like Latur, Jalgaon, Nanded and Kolhapur were shocked to be greeted by a notice (pasted outside the main gate) spelling out information about the cancellation of the walk-in-interview due to unavoidable circumstances. When contacted, civic chief Subhash Laakhe said, “It was an unfortunate decision to cancel the interview process, but due to the imposition of model code of conduct for the

But see what the MBMC has done. When they published the advertisement exactly a month ago, they should have published abut the cancellation well in time,” said Anita (name changed) who was seeking a nurse's job with the MBMC. he newly appointed TMC commissioner Sanjiv Jaiswal has conveyed to his subordinates in no uncertain terms that he will not tolerate non-performance of the officials and aspires to have a clean city with green cover. Jaiswal, in a press meet at Thane expressed his displeasure over the irregular salaries that the TMC employees get. Being his first day as the TMC commissioner, Jaiswal who took charge from Asim Gupta, arranged a press meet at the Thane Municipal Corporation on Monday evening. He stressed on the need for cleanliness in the city with adequte green cover. He wants to focus on health and education issues in the rural areas of the city, traffic issues,
dumping grounds, parking space, solid waste management and water issues on priority basis. “Our focus will also be on basic civic administration. As far as the traffic issue is concerned, specially towards Ahmedabad, Nashik and Bengaluru, it has been noted that separate by pass roads are needed to decrease the traffic near Ghodbunder road,” said Jaiswal. “We will try to give justice to the planning of roads and
public places through proper plans, and people-oriented administration by noting public grievances. As far as LBT is concerned, we will try to recover the taxes through the LBT norms before March 2015,” he added. He also spoke about the vacant posts in the civic body and the need to fill them. “We will not tolerate the non-performance of the employees, including myself, as far as target and recovery of taxes is concerned which will be monitored minutely,” Jaiswal said. The ground for dumping the waste will be arranged in the land which is legal, as the land which is planned for dumping right now is illegal and the villagers are against it, he informed. A parking solution of vertical parking space will also be put forth.

Pre-poll prediction: BJP will win P
RIME Minister Narendra Modi still appears to be the chairman of BJP’s poll campaign committee. After winning the Lok Sabha elections — addressing many rallies across the country — he turned his attention to the states. He went to all states where elections were being held and addressed rallies. He was successful everywhere. The rallies he held have enabled the BJP to form state governments. Narendra Modi addressed a huge rally in Delhi two days ago. When elections were held last time in Delhi, the state BJP had to conduct them without much support from top leaders. Even so, it got a large number of votes, but it did not have the number to form the government. Pre-poll predictions will start now and chances are that most of them will select the BJP. The AAP does not have the popular appeal like it had during the last elections. Between a corrupt Congress party and AAP, voters chose the latter. The performance of the AAP later on was poor. It withdrew from the government, participated in the Lok Sabha elections and was decimated. Its rejection by the people on that occasion shows people have lost what little faith they had in the party. The Congress is all set for one more defeat — when elections are held in Delhi.

HAKA was understandably in the midst of violence a few days ago because Begum Khalida Zia of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had given a call for blockade. Hers was a protest against the polls held on January 5 last year, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won a majority even before a single vote was cast. Begum Zia is to blame herself largely because she boycotted the election. She suspected that the polls would be a farce and that it was futile to contest. But that argument did not hold water because the election held despite her boycott was by and large a free and fair affair. General H.M. Ershad’s Jatia Party was able to return some numbers who constitute the main Opposition in Parliament today. That Sheikh Hasina is authoritarian is nothing new. But Begum Zia gave legitimacy to Sheikh Hasina’s strong methods by avoiding the polls. Sheikh Hasina’s governance is a one-person rule and even the judiciary feels shy of giving judgments which may annoy her. As for bureaucracy, it has become a rubber stamp. Begum Zia’s charge that she was forced to stay in her party office for the whole night may be true. The police themselves admit that they had beefed up the security and were willing to take her to her home. Apparently, she wanted to go somewhere else so as to pursue the call for a demonstration on the first anniversary of her election boycott.
Peaceful conditions Bangladesh won independence through the blood of thousands of people who fought the then ruling Pakistani army. The country should have settled down to peaceful conditions by now. But, as has happened in other liberated countries, the freedom fighters themselves battle against one another to register supremacy. Bangladesh is no different. What is painful is the effort to tear the social fabric which the liberators and custodians of democracy had inherited when Bangladesh was born. But over a period of time they have been concentrating more on usurping power and wanting to dominate. And they seem to stop at nothing in achieving them. Bangladesh is in the midst of something like that. The army once took over the state and tried to govern. But it found that the Bangladeshis loved to rule themselves, raucously and irrationally. Therefore, the army does not want to burn its fingers again. The two Begums, Sheikh

Wealth is that is bestowed on you in its different forms. You just need to realise and understand this. There are eight types of wealth. Wealth as material comfort: The first type of wealth is what we commonly understand as wealth - the material wealth. Just being born in Ford’s home, somebody acquired all that wealth without any effort. Why does this happen when somebody else had to toil all his life to make money? Why do some people inherit while others do not? Wealth as health: Just having money is not enough. Some may have a lot of money but they cannot eat well. They may have diabetes or high cholesterol. That wealth is nothing. Some people do not have money, but they have enough to eat and they are healthy. Like many farmers in India: they don’t have any money but they have plenty of food with them. Anyone who goes to them is fed; they can feed the whole town. They can sleep well. Hasina and Khalida Zia, continue to fight and have no compunction in harming the country to establish their supremacy. However, a good fallout of their never-ending confrontation is that the people have learnt not to obey their calls for 'hartal' or disturb the work. Bangladesh has sustained the growth rate at six per cent a year for the last two decades. Yet, what is the solution for peaceful governance? New Delhi, which helped the Bangladeshis to liberate themselves, could play a role. But it is backing Sheikh Hasina because of her secular credentials. Begum Zia has staked her future by aligning with the Jammat-e-Islami which is fundamentalist and which sided with the anti-liberation forces, including the Pakistani army, during the freedom struggle. Islamabad continues try to fish in troubled waters. But its dependence is on the extremist elements which do not seem to sell at this juncture.
A book entitled, 'The Blood Telegram – India’s Secret War in East Pakistan', by Gary G. Bass, has confirmed this. But what the book reveals is the misreporting of events in Bangladesh. Many of US Embassy staff did not approved of them. “(The US) Embassy has had full-scale revolt on general issue by virtually all officers in Consulate General, Dacca, coupled with forfeiture of leadership for American community there, Dacca’s reporting has been tendentious to an extreme,” says the book. Bangladesh has not been liberated in the true sense because it heavily depends on foreign aids. There is a consortium with America playing the leading role to provide Dhaka with foreign exchange and a large amount of Takka, the Bangladeshi currency.
Foreign powers
As long as the Bangladesh leaders do not look within, they will continue to depend on foreign powers which will naturally exact the price. Engaged as they are in internal squabbles, the political parties have no concrete programmes to liberate themselves from foreign influence. In fact, the assistance of foreign powers is sought to deal with the domestic problems. However, this is not a long-term solution. The tragedy of Bangladesh is that both the Begums, because of their personal enmity, continue to build their support with the help of outside powers. As long as they dominate the political scene, Bangladesh has little future. But then how does this change? UnforKuldip Nayar tunately, no alternative is emerging. BETWEEN THE LINES
The 8 types of wealth never successful in whatever they undertake. Wealth as courage: One must see life as an adventurous game and should play the game without worrying about the outcome. But if one is afraid of making mistakes or doing anything, one lacks the wealth of courage. If one lacks courage, there is no fun in life even if the person has a lot of money. Someone may not have any money, but if they possess courage, they reflect wealth. Wealth as friendliness: The fifth type of wealth is friendliness, having a caring attitude, having a sense of belonging. One may have the other types of wealth, but will still
MATTER & SPIRIT feel as though in a tight compartment, without a sense of belonging. That is what happens at most parties. Many rich people go to a party just to show off how rich they are, but they feel so out of place. You find sugar-coated misery there. Everybody is so stiff. It’s like a war field actually. Parties are like a competition ground or battlefield; everyone is carrying a shield. That is no wealth at all.
Wealth as skill: Another wealth is having different skills and talents. Some people write well, some are good in arguing, some are good in debating, some have a knack for music, some have a wonderful voice, some cook well, some are talented in bringing up a child, in administration, and still others are talented in completely different things. They put their maximum efforts to achieve what they want, yet they fail to achieve their goal. Effort is not enough to achieve one’s goal. Wealth as dignity: The world is full of lessons if only we observe it with full awareness. Be as humble as the grass. Then nothing can touch you, nothing. No one can humiliate you. In the eyes of the Divine, it is those who serve creation, are true kings and queens. Walk like a king and be a perfect servant! Wealth as memory of the source: We only know that we were born; we don’t even know how we were born. Somewhere from three or four years of our age onwards, we start understanding things around us. Our memory is very short; it appears this is our only life. We are not aware of our source. The moment we become aware of your source, and our infinite past, our whole life changes. It’s just like someone suddenly realises how wealthy he or she is. Immediately your style of walking changes. AFTER a bitter campaign and a hotly contested election, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir could not possibly have come to a quick agreement on power-sharing and government-formation. With the post-poll negotiations complicated further by the nature of the verdict — different communities in different regions voted differently — Governor’s Rule was perhaps inevitable in the short term. Clearly, there was a polarisation along religious lines with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) winning most of its seats in the Valley, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failing to get a single seat outside of the Jammu region. Ladakh, incidentally, favoured the Congress. As the single largest party with 28 seats in the 87-member Assembly, the PDP took the lead in the negotiations to form a government. But contrary to what PDP leaders would have the people of J&K believe, the sticking points in their negotiations with the BJP are not Article 370 or the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Assurances on such serious issues cannot possibly be obtained or given by political parties as part of bargaining for power. What is at

Unnecessary hype APROPOS your front page story 'Singer, accused of rape, performs at police event' (ADC, Jan 12), sometimes the media exhibits this distressing tendency to manufacture news where none exists. So Ankit Tewari performed at The Mumbai police 'Umang'; and this will probably be debated on television. What's the big deal? Only in India (and a few Arab countries) can a woman have consensual sexual relations with a man for months, if not years, and then get him arrested for rape – thereby degrading the very definition of the term. Even the Supreme
Court is considering knocking this puritan and antiquated statute off the books. While one tends to sympathise with Sanjay Dutt on the harsh sentence he was given in the Mumbai riots and blast case when others of his stature would have escaped in a cine crazy country like ours, rules and laws in a democratic set up is same for every citizen and actor Sanjay Dutt should act as a great example by not breaking the law and portraying humane qualities for people to follow like he did in his famous character in films of Gandhian values. Sanjay Dutt's best bet is to follow the law and getting his sentence reduced by portraying exemplary behaviour in the times to come. Good luck and health to Sanjay Dutt. — S N Kabra, via email

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2015 >> Find out all about the various conditions that can affect your vision and how to keep your eyes healthy
WATCH OUT! Vision problems aren’t life-threatening and are often not taken as seriously as illnesses such as diabetes or heart attacks. However, Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry advise you not to take your eyes for granted. They’re telling you about what conditions you can suffer from and what you can do to pre-empt them
I
t’s often only when problems such as blurry vision, infections and painful styes affect you that you realise how uncomfortable and dangerous such complications can be — and we haven’t even mentioned the risk of losing your vision altogether, though the chances of that happening are comparatively low. Instead of waiting until these complications strike, take a look at our extensive guide, which will help you to identify eye problems and teach you how to keep your eyes healthy.

from. We don’t mean to scare you, but a basic understanding of commonly occurring problems is necessary in order to identify them in good time and visit a doctor immediately. Without getting into the scientific details, take a look at what your eyes are at a risk of.
Retinal Detachment
n What is it? The retina is located at the back of your eye and is where images are formed. When your retina separates from the back of your eye, or shifts from its position, it can cause partial or complete loss of vision. This usually occurs when your retina isn’t

receiving enough oxygen and is a medical emergency. So, don’t take this lightly, as the chances of losing your vision because of this are high. n Symptoms The most common symptom is blurry vision. You may also see flashes of light when you look to your sides and sometimes experience frequent dark spots that hamper your vision.
Eye floaters
n What is it? This is not a disease, but floaters often act as a symptom for other eye conditions. They are tiny specks, lines or debris that you might see floating in front of

your eyes. Although they might don’t always cause any physical pain, they can be disorienting and distracting.
Corneal abrasion
n What is it? The cornea is a thin membrane that covers your iris. If dust, makeup, sand or your fingernails come in constant contact with it, it can get scratched. Wearing contact lenses incorrectly can also cause corneal abrasion. Not only does this cause pain and discomfort, if left untreated, the abrasion can get infected as well.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2015 >> Make sure you take breaks when you’re working in front of a monitor
Conjunctivitis
n What is it? Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is a common disease that occurs when the blood vessels in your conjunctiva (a membrane that lines one part of your eye) swell up. This tinges your eyes with a bloody red or pink colour, which is where the name pink eye comes from. It is usually caused by virus and bacteria and commonly occurs when seasons change. Apart from this, continuous exposure to chemicals and allergens such as pollen can also cause pink eye. n Symptoms Itchiness, red or pink eyes, a thick discharge clouding your eyes at night and watery eyes are all signs of conjunctivitis.
Cataract
Continued from pg 13 « n Symptoms Severe pain, excessive tearing and the need to blink rapidly are all indicators of corneal abrasion.
Styes
n What is it? Styes appear as a bump on your eyelid or waterline, and are caused when bacteria infects the oil glands that are
present on your eyelid. They usually appear close to your lash line and go away on their own. However, if the swelling is too severe, or if you can’t bear to keep your eyes open even in very dim lighting, we recommend visiting a doctor immediately. n Symptoms Puffy or swollen eyelids, redness, watery eyes, sensitivity to light and feeling as though something is lodged in your eye are all symptoms of styes.
DRY EYES It’s alarming how several people who suffer from dry eyes, pass it off as a result of a late night at work or sleep deprivation — which is why this condition deserves a separate section. So take a look at our informative guide about this condition.
What is it? When your eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep them moist, or produce tears at such long intervals that your eyes dry out, the condition is referred to as dry eyes. Tears are essential because they keep your eyes hydrated, wash away dust and specks of other foreign material and form a protective layer over your eyes. When this layer of moisture is missing, your eyes are prone to infections, corneal abrasions, discomfort and itchiness. Symptoms of dry eyes include repeated blinking and constantly having to fight the urge to scratch or rub your eyes.
What causes it Poor sleeping habits, sitting
n What is it? The lens in your eye, which helps you to focus on objects, can turn rusty over time. This happens when the protein that is present in the lens clumps together, making your vision cloudy. Smoking, not wearing sunglasses when you’re out in the sun, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and the consumption of medication that contain steroids can put you at risk of cataract in your old age. But, it is extremely easy to treat this condition with corrective surgery. n Symptoms Seeing halos, cloudy or blurry vision, difficulty seeing in low-light conditions, frequently needing new glasses and a brown or yellow tinge over what you see, are all signs of cataract.
FOOD FOR YOUR EYES Take a look at some foods that you should include in your diet to boost your eye health. n Fish: Include tuna, mackerel and sardines (any fish that is oily), into your diet as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids help prevent problems such as dry eyes, macular degeneration and cataract. n Greens: If you didn’t have enough reasons already to include greens such as kale and spinach into your diet, here’s another one. They are filled with antioxidants that refresh your eyes and keep them healthy. n Eggs: An egg a day can help prevent night blindness and sharpen your vision. n Quinoa & brown rice: Both these grains ensure overall eye health and reduce your risk of suffering from eye problems that are associated with old age. n Lentils & legumes: Consume kidney beans, black-eyed beans and other lentils on a regular basis, as the zinc and flavonoids that are present in them protect you from retina-related eye problems.
EYE EXERCISES too close to a monitor or laptop screen for prolonged periods of time and excessively windy environments can cause dry eyes.
High risk You will be at a higher risk of suffering from dry eyes if you also suffer from: n Diabetes. n Thyroid. n Pollen/ dust allergies. n Vitamin A deficiency.
Treat it at home Artifical tear solutions, available as over-the-counter solutions, are the simplest and most common way to deal with dry eyes. Apart from this, avoid polluted environments and sitting directly in front of or under a fan or air conditioner. Remember to blink frequently, especially if you work long hours in front of a computer or any other digital screen. If you don’t get relief in 2-3 days, visit a doctor. Although dry eyes are easy to treat, if the condition goes untreated, it can cause eye ulcers and infections. >> Dry eyes can be treated with over-the-counter tear solutions
Before we tell you about a few exercises, let’s make one thing clear — there is not enough proof that these exercises will improve your vision. But, what they will do is keep your eye muscles active. So, devoting five minutes every day to these exercises is a good idea. n Palming: This is a simple exercise that can relieve stress around your eyes. Simply rub your hands together until they feel warm and then place each palm over an eye. n Make a figure of eight: Sit at your desk, with your eyes open, imagine a large figure of eight around 10 feet in front of you and start tracing its outline with your eyes. After doing this for a few minutes, repeat the movement in the other direction.
>> Sunglasses are as important as sunscreen in order to combat the sun’s harsh rays
TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES We recommend that you include these steps in your daily routine to ensure that your eyesight is healthy and that you are safeguarded from infections and other complications. n Eat and exercise: We aren’t talking about following a diet or working out. We’re talking about eating foods that will benefit your eyes and performing eye exercises — check out our sections on food and exercise to learn more.
n Near & far focussing: Sit on a couch or chair and hold your thumb in front of your head by stretching your hand out. Focus on the thumb and gaze at it for a few seconds. Then look behind at an object that is several feet away from you (it could also be a blank wall). Stare at the object for a few seconds and move back to your thumb. n Focus with one eye: Cover one eye with one palm and use your other eye to switch between different objects. Try to look at objects located at varied distances from you and focus on each object for a few seconds before moving on to another. Perform this for a minute and then repeat it with your other eye.
n Quit smoking: If you thought that smoking only damaged your lungs, think again. Studies have shown that smoking can damage your optic nerve and increase your risk of suffering from cataracts and macular degeneration. n Wear sunglasses: Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement. They are to your eyes what sunscreen is to your skin. Ensure that you choose sunglasses from reputed brands that offer UV protection and wear them every time you step out in the sun — excess exposure to UV rays can increase your risk of suffering from
cataracts and macular degeneration. While buying sunglasses, look for a pair that offers 99-100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays. n Wear a helmet: Confused? Well, if you ride a motorbike, it is important that you wear your helmet with its visor down to prevent dust particles from entering your eye. These particles might seem harmless, but remember that when you’re riding, they will enter at a very high speed and force, and can damage your cornea. n Take breaks: This is a very important tip, which helps to keep your vision healthy. When you’re doing something vision intensive such as working on a computer or reading a book, make sure that you take two-minute breaks every 20 minutes. Look out through the window at an object that is located at a distance — this will not only give your eyes a break, but will also act as an exercise, as your eyes will have to refocus on the object.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2015 >> Take a look at what superfoods you should be adding to your diet this year
Quinoa and kale are a thing of the past, well, of the past year at least. Sara Shah brings you a list foods that will leave you glowing in 2015
2
014 was a year of diet fads and superfoods that stole the spotlight, courtesy of several celebrities who religiously followed and endorsed them. But, if you’re feeling a little adventurous at the start of the new year, here’s a list of foods that you might not have heard of, but that will give you a healthy boost and are definitely worth a try. Take a look.
matcha tea ‘Eh, what is that?’ This is exactly what our reaction was when we first heard about matcha tea. The dried green tea leaves have been ground to a fine powder. But, there’s a catch — before the tea leaves are plucked, the plants are shaded for 30 days in order to increase their chlorophyll production. So, when you drink matcha tea, you’re essentially consuming all the healthy chlorophyll that is produced by the leaves. This is believed to slow down the progression of kidney and liver damage, especially in type-2 diabetics.
WatercreSS Watercress has the ability to wipe out breast cancer cells, and a study conducted in 2014 also found that watercress has the highest nutrient score amongst all fruits and vegetables.
Broccoli SproutS Now, before you launch into a full-blown rant about how much you hate anything with the word broccoli in it, hear us out. Usually served as a garnish alongside meat or fish, broccoli sprouts are slowly gaining recognition for their exceptionally high content of myrosinase, an
enzyme that is known for its ability to fight and prevent the growth of cancer cells.
caperS Spice up your meat, pasta dishes and eggs with capers as they help fight the by-products that are formed during digestion. These byproducts are synonymous with an increased risk of cancer. Also, using capers is a great way to add some spice to your meals.
cricketS We did expect you to cringe while reading this, but it’s true that crickets provide exceptionally high-quality protein that is usually found in meat, and so, they are extremely healthy.
kaletteS Kale might have taken centre stage in 2014, but 2015 is all about kalettes. A hybrid of Brussel sprouts and kale, kalettes look just like Brussel sprouts, except for the fact that they have leaves sprouting out of them. This vegetable is also packed with the nutritional benefits of both kale and Brussel sprouts.
plantainS You may have heard of plantains before, but they are yet to gain recognition for their nutritional benefits. The soluble fibre present in plantains helps treat Crohn’s disease, which is an inflammatory bowel disease. They are also high in potassium, vitamin C and vitamin A. Usually fried, the key to getting the most out of plantains, is to cook them in the healthiest manner possible, which is to either bake or sauté them.
umeBoShi paSte
purple pepperS
Sounds like something from a Japanese menu, right? Your guess is partially correct. This fermented condiment is made using Japanese Umeboshi plums and can help you kick your salt addiction. Despite its high salt content, using just a small amount of this concentrated salt serves as a healthy alternative to table salt. You can start off by using it in salad dressings.
Purple foods are known for their extensive health benefits and purple peppers are no exception. They offer the same health benefits as purple tomatoes, corn and blueberries, and also possess an antioxidant called anthocyanin. An added bonus is that they help you make your dishes look attractive!
lychee A food that we all love and have heard of, lychees are high in potassium and vitamin C, help reduce inflammation and fight certain forms of cancer. But, the best part is that you can consume them in almost any possible form — even in ice cream or desserts!
Black Bean, mung Bean & garBanzo Bean paStaS If you want to get on to the health food bandwagon without giving up on pasta, then these non-wheat pasta alternatives are the way to go. Some of the most common varieties are made using black beans and garbanzo beans (right) and are packed with fibre and proteins.
khoraSan Wheat This ancient grain is known for its impressive heart friendly properties. It improves your metabolic, lipid, antioxidant and inflammatory blood profiles by a significant margin.
roSemary A well-loved spice, rosemary can be added to almost any dish — be it roast chicken or pasta. It is known to reduce cancer causing compounds that are present in meat and it also lowers your risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s, diabetes and macular degeneration.
coconut flour Coconut is extremely healthy and so, it’s hardly surprising that coconut flour is fast gaining popularity as a healthy, gluten-free flour. It contains high levels of fibre, which makes it an extremely healthy baking substitute as well.
pine nutS If you want to stop eating out of boredom and prevent overeating, look no further. Pine nuts can help you suppress your appetite as they make you feel full.
« know more eating habits to leave behind in 2014
Now that we’ve told you about some healthy foods that you should add to your diet in 2015, Yamini Walia tells you about five unhealthy food habits that you need to leave behind in 2014
Drinking frequently
We all enjoy a drink or two, but we tend to ignore the fact that excessive consumption of alcohol can be extremely harmful for our health. If you don’t believe us, just stop drinking for a month and you’ll notice an immediate improvement in your health. If you don’t think you can go cold turkey, restrict your intake to a maximum of three drinks a week, and we promise you that the results will be drastic.
eating reaDymaDe Diet fooD
Packaged diet food is not as healthy as you think it is, because like most packaged foods, it is full of unwanted additives. Most of the time you’ll be left with a lingering urge to eat more, as these foods aren’t entirely satisfying. As a result of this, you’ll end up consuming more calories. So, stay away from packaged health foods.
overeating healthy fooD
While overeating unhealthy food is blasphemy, a fixation with
>> Excessive drinking is one habit that you should kick this year
eating only healthy food is not a good habit either. Even though whole foods are rich in nutrients and enhance your metabolism, you can run the risk of overdoing it. Instead, pay attention to the signs that your body is giving you in order to understand when you’re hungry and eat accordingly. Also, remember to exercise portion control.
Skipping mealS
This is one of the worst things that you can do, whether or not you’re looking to lose weight. When you skip meals, your body actually stops burning calories as it prepares to go into starvation mode. Also, it increases your chances of overeating at night, when your physical activity levels are low. So, this is one habit that you should definitely leave behind.
emotional eating
Eating when you’re sad, happy or even bored is a common reason for excess calorie consumption. If you’re addicted to emotional eating, it might be a challenge to get rid of, but it’s not impossible. Focus on finding healthier alternatives to satisfy your emotional needs.

Mostly Bs Based on your answers, we can tell you that your relationship doesn’t seem to have a major effect on your emotional health — which is the way it should be. You and your partner share a healthy relationship and the two of you aren’t stepping over each other’s toes. In fact, we expressly recommend skipping over the box, because even if you’ve answered ‘a’ to one or two questions, remember that one or two factors won’t have a major impact on your emotional health. It’s only when most (if not all), questions hold true for you that you should start worrying.
2. If you don’t message your partner at regular intervals, you’re going to receive a checkup call. a. True. b. False. 3. Most of your free time is spent thinking about the points that you can raise during the next
RelATIonShIp & eMoTIonAl heAlTh nexuS levels. But, the jealousy that you feel every time your partner talks to someone of the opposite sex will leave you worried and anxious. Learn to trust and have a talk with your partner, who can help you avoid such emotions.
The following points will show you how your relationship is draining you. Each point refers to a particular question, so match your answers with our tips. 1. If either of you constantly hovers around the other, complaining about getting dressed too slowly, it not only slows the other person down (surprise, surprise! Negative reinforcement is not productive after all!), it also stresses you out. Avoid this by determining a time and place where the two of you meet, before heading to a party. 2. Constantly messaging your partner, talking on the phone and replying to emails and chats means that you have absolutely no time to do your own thing. Your productivity will drop and the tension of missing a call or a message will drive you insane. Negative emotions damage your health, so you need to talk to your partner about this. 3. Spending your free time thinking about how to win an argument will leave you with no time for yourself. Reading a book or solving the crossword puzzle are some of the best ways to pass your time. Both the activities will improve your emotional health.
6. Some couples love being together all the time, while others don’t. However, if you’ve answered ‘a’ to most of these questions, you need to be wary of this one. Try taking a short break or spend the weekend by yourself.
4. Indulging in hobbies and activities that interest you is a great way to boost emotional health. We’re not saying that every time you do something that you find boring, your emotional health reduces, but never doing anything that interests you will take a toll on you in the long run. 5. Jealousy can ruin your health. And before you jump in with arguments in defense of a little healthy jealousy, let us remind you that envy, not jealousy, is responsible for being able to propel you into improving your health and fitness
7. A study on emotional health and intelligence concluded that the freedom to air your emotions is necessary for a healthy state of mind. If you always stifle your views because your partner might not agree with you, you need to think about whether the two of you are compatible. 8. Emotional independence might seem like an alien concept, but simply put, it’s your ability to feel happy or sad regardless of your partner’s emotional state. Feeling empathy because your partner’s close relative, (whom you didn’t know), passed away is fine. But, feeling extremely sad, just because your partner is depressed, will affect your emotional health majorly.

>> To make your pull-ups more challenging, try to hold the position at the top for 10 seconds
Work out on-the-go If you travel frequently and find it difficult to devote enough time to your workout regime, you should try exercising with a resistance band, which is easy to carry around. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you what exercises you can perform

maKe pull-ups more challenging
Pull-ups are an excellent exercise to include in your workout routine, but they can get a bit monotonous. So, Yamini Walia tells you how to make them a little more challenging add weIght
Adding some weights is the easiest way to make pull-ups more intense. You can either try holding a dumbbell between your feet, wear a dipping belt around your waist or put on a weighted rucksack.
hold the posItIon
While performing a regular pull-up, try to hold your position for a minimum of 10 seconds once you pull yourself up. This will make the exercise more difficult, will work your shoulders and improve your grip.
Make use of a towel
Hanging a towel over the bar is a great way to build a powerful grip and strong back. Simply loop the towel around the bar, hold it as you would hold a rope, and then pull yourself up.
swItch your grIp
When you’re at the top of your movement, try to switch your grip for an intense pull-up variation. To perform this, pull yourself up as quickly as possible, so that you have ample time to let go off the bar and reverse your grip from palms facing in to palms facing out, or vice versa.
use a fInger
This one is for those who want an extremely intense pull-up. To perform this exercise, grip the pull-up bar with one finger, with your palms facing away from you. Pull yourself up using just one finger. Doing this will target your shoulders, biceps and middle back. Avoid this move if you’re a beginner.

esistance bands make for great workout equipment. They are cost-effective (you can get one for as little as `300), portable and are a simple way to increase the intensity of several exercises. While conventional exercises offer more effective results, if you travel a lot or are hard pressed for time, using a resistance band is a great way to stay fit. Take a look at what exercises you can perform with this versatile workout equipment.
work your legs If you want to give your legs a complete workout, perform this exercise, because it works your calves, shins, hamstrings and thighs. n Step into a loop band and position it so that it is wrapped around your shins, just above your ankles. n Position your feet shoulder-width apart. You may need to adjust the width slightly so that the band is taut. n Now, lower your body into a half-squat. n Shift your body weight on to your left leg and take a step to the right, using just your right leg. n Ensure that you move your left leg as little as possible while taking a step. n The band should be taut throughout the exercise. n Once you take 8-10 steps to your right, start moving towards your left.
strengthen your back This exercise engages your shoulder blades and gives your back a thorough workout, while improving its strength and flexibility. n Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart. n Bend your knees slightly and hold a resistance band with both your hands stretched outwards. n Make sure that your arms are at shoulder level, parallel to the floor. n Use a circular motion to bring your arms by your sides. The band should be completely stretched out in front of you, your body should form a T shape and you should feel your shoulder blades contracting. n Slowly return to the starting position. Remember to perform this step slowly and in one continuous motion in order to prevent any muscle pulls. n Perform 8-10 repetitions of this exercise.
buIld your bIceps Bicep curls are a popular exercise, and using a resistance band will help increase
>> Resistance bands are an effective workout equipment for your legs and back the intensity. n Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place them on the centre of a resistance band. n Hold the ends of the band in both hands and place your arms by your side. n Pull both ends up towards your shoulder, bending your arms at the elbows. n Perform this movement slowly, until you feel your biceps contracting. n Slowly lower your arms back to the starting position and perform 12-15 repetitions of this exercise.
crossover You’ll need a sturdy pole for this exercise — if you can’t find one, you can use a window grille or the handle of a locked door. n Loop the resistance band around a pole (you can also secure it around an iron grille or a door handle) and stand in front of it. n Hold the ends in your hands and keep your arms raised, by your sides, with your palms facing forward. n Stretch the band to bring your arms in front of your chest until your fists are almost touching. n Hold this position for a few seconds and then slowly return to the starting position. Perform 10-12 repetitions of this exercise.
Increase IntensIty The four exercises we mentioned make for a full-body workout. However, you can also use resistance bands to perform other exercises and increase their intensity. Take a look. n Lunges: Hold on to the ends of a resistance band when you’re starting this exercise. Now, when you step forward to perform a lunge, step on to the centre of the band. When you move your body downwards into a lunge, stretch your arms upwards simultaneously, until they’re at the same level as your head. n Squats: Step on the centre of a resistance band with both your feet as you get into position for a squat. Then perform a squat and move both your arms up above your head, stretching the band as far as you can. n Crunches: Loop the band around a door handle and get into position right in front of it while holding the band over your head with both your hands. Now, instead of moving your torso up, raise your legs and bend your knees so that your calves are parallel to the floor and your thighs form a 90° angle with the floor. Simultaneously, draw your arms towards your knees. n Push-ups:Lie flat on your stomach. Loop a resistance band around your back and hold the ends with your hands — reduce the width of the band till you feel tension forming. Get into a pushup position and start performing this exercise — you will be pushing up your body weight, as well as the resistance generated due to the band.

Breathe in, Breathe out
T
here was a time when the benefits of meditation and yoga were seen as nothing more than an old-wives’ tale. Over time, the popularity of yoga has only increased and now, it has taken the world by storm, transitioning into an effective tool that can help you stay healthy, improve your mood and beat stress. Just five minutes of deep, purposeful breathing can instantly calm your nerves and refresh your mind. However, while the benefits of yoga are widely known, meditation lags behind a little on the popularity scale. We speak to yoga expert Sunaina Rekhi, who tells us how meditation can help you, and also gives us a few useful techniques to help us meditate more effectively.
>> Meditation is believed to enhance your creativity
How it Helps People often dismiss meditation as unscientific, but you’d be surprised to know that scientific research on meditation is as robust as it is on serious illnesses. With the advent of advanced brain mapping techniques, such as MRIs, studies about meditation have been given a boost. From reducing stress, anxiety and depression, to boosting selfesteem, improving productivity and relieving pain, there are several areas that these studies have shed light on. A popular, emerging consensus among researchers is that different meditation techniques have different health benefits. For example, a study conducted by two cognitive psychologists, which was
published in Mindfulness in 2014, found that open monitoring meditation can improve creativity, while no such effects were observed in focussed attention mediation (which is perhaps the most common type of meditation, which involves focussing all your attention on one thing — usually your breathing). When we asked her about the benefits of meditation, Sunaina told us, “Meditation and yoga give you a sense of relief, like coming home after a long and difficult journey would. They help you to develop
deeper perspective, so that you can transcend daily worries. Meditation also helps lower stress and anxiety and gives you valuable insights into your character, which can make you a better leader, a better communicator and a more productive person.”
pRactise it Practising meditation is not as simple as sitting in a corner and concentrating on your breathing — although that does count for something. It includes several other techniques that will benefit you in
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2015
Meditation is an age-old technique that is used to combat stress and ease your mind. However, it also has several less popular benefits that help you lead a happy, healthy life. Dev Goswami tells you more different ways. We asked Sunaina to tell us about a few. n concentration meditation: This includes placing all your attention on one object or activity (such as your breathing), without getting distracted. It can help improve your ability to focus, while lowering stress levels and putting you in a peaceful state of mind. n Mindful meditation: This variation is a comparatively complicated technique, which involves focussing on your physical sensations, emotions and consciousness. Mindful meditation is popular because it is known to relieve pain — an effect that is backed by studies. Sunaina also tells us that it can help those who suffer from anxiety and depression. n Reflective meditation: This technique was traditionally used to gain an insight into subjects such as life, death and philosophy. It involves focussing on a single aspect of your life and analysing it, and is like a solo brainstorming session. It can help address problems regarding your personal relationships as well as your professional life. n open monitoring meditation: This is the complete opposite of reflective mediation. Here, you can let your mind wander, instead of keeping it focussed on one subject. This technique helps to boost creativity and also improves productivity.
Meditation Misconceptions Unsurprisingly, there are several myths that surround meditation. Sunaina busts a few common ones: n While people believe that it takes years of practice to master the practice, a daily 5-10 minute session of meditation can benefit you. n If you think that you need to set aside a chunk of your daily schedule for meditation, you’re mistaken. Sunaina tells us that you don’t need to meditate for 30 minutes to get its benefits. She recommends that you start with five minutes and build on it as and when you can. n It is a common belief that meditation is a religious or spiritual activity. But, this isn’t true. It’s a simple mental exercise, which has been scientifically tested. n Don’t make the mistake of believing that certain postures are better to mediate in than others. Suniana tells us that the best position is one that is steady and comfortable for you. Of course, your back, neck and head should be straight and you shouldn’t be slouching. However, apart from that, it doesn’t really matter how you’re sitting — if you are not comfortable on the floor, there’s no reason why you can’t meditate on a chair.

etween toasty days and nippy nights, the weather change has caused prickly, sore throats, also known as pharyngitis. If you’ve ever suffered from pharyngitis — and chances are that you have — you know that the constant pain and discomfort in your throat is enough to throw your day off track and make you feel as though all you want to do is lie in bed.

drinking anything that is too hot will cause just as much irritation as sipping on ice-cold water. When the pain is severe, avoid solid foods such as toast, biscuits and raw vegetables such as carrots and cucumbers. Their dry consistency makes them hard to swallow, which can irritate and scratch your throat. Instead, eat soft, warm foods, which are easy to swallow and don’t require too much of an effort to consume. If your sore throat is accompanied by a fever, remember to drink plenty of fluids as this will help bring the fever down. Keep lozenges handy. These can provide you with temporary relief while you are travelling, or when you are at work and need a quick, effective remedy, For as long as you are suffering from pharyngitis, try to avoid polluted, dusty and smoky environments, because they will aggravate your condition and can also cause or increase inflammation.
Usually accompanying a cold or as a prelude to a cough, pharyngitis is characterised by pain in your throat, accompanied by swollen tonsils and a constant, itchy sensation. Here are some of the symptoms that accompany pharyngitis. n Inflammation or swelling of your throat. n Runny nose. n Fever. n Muscle aches. n Frequent headaches.

The reason why most doctors don’t recommend taking antibiotics is because pharyngitis is very rarely caused by bacteria, making antibiotics ineffective. Also, if you regularly self-medicate with antibiotics for minor aches and pains, your body will grow immune to bacteria in the long run.

>> Use ground coffee as a scrub to get rid of cellulite Dear Barbara, Even though I exercise regularly, I have started to develop cellulite on certain areas of my body. I maintain a strict diet and never skip a workout, but I can’t seem to get rid of the cellulite. What can I do? Please help! — myrah jalan, colaba Dear myrah, Falling prey to cellulite after a certain age is completely normal, so you don’t really need to worry. And, while it’s good that you’re strict about your diet and exercise regime, that won’t always help prevent dimpled skin. Cellulite is formed because of a stagnant lymphatic system that creates pockets of accumulated fat. To boost your lymphatic system, scrub a body brush over the area in circular motions. You can also use ground coffee as a scrub on the area, as they stimulate your cells and disperse cellulite.
Dear Barbara, I love wearing makeup, especially during a night out, but it always fades away before I even reach my destination. As a result, my face looks patchy and unsightly. Also, it isn’t possible to touch up every hour, so I’d love to find a solution to make my makeup last longer. — sujata makhija, mulund Dear sujata, The solution to your problem is really simple. Pollution and travelling by public transport can fade your makeup and make it look patchy. All you need to do is invest in a makeup setting spray. Once you’ve applied your makeup, spray this on to your entire face, let it dry and voila, your makeup will be locked in and will last all night. For a more natural solution, try this trick — after applying your makeup, turn the shower on its hottest setting and stand near it for a minute or two. The steam will help set your makeup and lock it in place. It may sound strange, but it is definitely worth a try.
>> If your freckles take away from your features instead of enhancing them, here’s how to fade them
Oil up Applying vitamin E and castor oil helps fade freckles naturally. Wash your face, dry it and then apply these oils instead of your regular moisturiser before you go to bed. Massage your face for ten minutes and leave them on overnight. The next morning, wash the oil off thoroughly. This step is extremely important, as the rich oils clog your pores and causes breakouts, which can lead to blemishes and scars. >> Lemon juice contains natural bleaching agents that can help lighten freckles
can either opt for supplements, or load up on citrus fruits. Eating food that is rich in vitamin C will not only help to lighten existing freckles, it will also prevent new ones from appearing.
lemOn juice Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent, which is why it is one of the best ways to get rid of freckles naturally. Simply wash your face and pat it dry before rubbing a slice of lemon over your freckles. This remedy works better on naturally occurring freckles, as they are lighter than those caused by the sun. After rubbing the slices on your face for around five minutes, wash your face with water and remember to follow up with a rich moisturiser, especially if you have dry skin, since lemon juice can strip it off its natural oils.
Vitamin c supplements If you have extremely dry skin, rubbing lemon slices on your face is a recipe for disaster. After all, no one wants to end up with irritated, dry skin. So, instead of applying vitamin C topically, eat some. You
eggplant Although eggplants don’t feature prominently in most skincare routines and remedies, they work exceptionally well when it comes to banishing freckles. Just like you would with lemon juice, rub slices of the vegetable on to your face for 10-15 minutes and then wash it off with water. Although it will take a week or two to see results, this remedy is one we swear by.
Bleach creams
strawBerries & Kiwis This remedy is easy to follow and offers significant results. Blend a handful of strawberries and kiwis into a smooth paste and apply a thick layer on to your face. Let it dry completely (this should take around 20 minutes) before peeling the mask off. The sticky fruit adheres to the topmost layer of your skin and peels it off when you peel off the mask, which is why this remedy will take a while to show results. Once you have removed the mask completely, wash your face thoroughly. >> Blend these fruits together to make a natural face peel
Bleach creams are easy to get your hands on and can help negate the discolouration that is caused by freckles. All you need to do is follow the instructions on the packet in order to lighten your freckles. However, we have a word of caution: some bleaches can be too strong and can irritate your skin. So, before you apply it on to your face, do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure that it suits your skin.

With non-performing assets from large corporates at worryingly high levels, State Bank of India Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya yesterday said lenders should be innovative in tailoring their products.”There are lots of hybrid instruments that can be looked at. There are ways of structuring loans so that we capture the cash-flow as it comes, rather than give a repayment schedule that is unrealistic and which cannot be met,” Bhattacharya said, addressing a seminar at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. She said domestic banks practise “vanilla banking”, which entails accepting deposits and lending the same as loans, but now there is a need to be more innovative. “Banks need to be more responsive to needs of borrowers rather than sell standard set of products,” she said. Bhattacharya’s comments come at a time when the gross NPAs have reached 4.5% of total advances as of the September quarter, from 4.1% in March 2014, according to RBI. When the restructured assets are added, the ratio of stressed advances shoots up to 10.7% from 10% in March.

which measures the pulse of the business community, stood at 129.4 for the January-March 2015, a decline of 6.0 % as compared to the October-December quarter of 2014. Based on the responses received, it was observed that five out of the six optimism indices -- volume of sales, new orders, net profits, selling Prices and inventory levels -- have registered a decrease as against the fourth quarter of last year. These developments during the survey period could have played a role in tempering business confidence with regard to the JanuaryMarch period of 2015, the report said, adding that "the government's recourse to ordinances in the last two weeks underlines its resolve to break the legislative impasse and create a conducive environment for reviving investments. "However, for business confidence to get a sustained boost, it is pertinent that these ordinances are passed as full-fledged legislation in the Budget session" he said. Govt Clears 30 Oil & Gas Discoveries For Production By A Business Reporter
E
nding months of the logjam over discoveries mired in contractual disputes, the government has cleared 30 projects of firms like Cairn India and ONGC to help monetise about 2.6 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government has approved a policy framework for relaxation, extensions and clarifications in timelines that will grant operational flexibility to help produce oil and gas from several discoveries that are mired in contractual disputes. "I am happy to share that after this approval, within a short span of less than 3 months, 30 long-pending issues have been resolved. This is expected to result in exploitation of about 34 million barrels of oil and about 0.7 Trillion cubic feet (TCF) of
gas," he said at Geo India Conference. Operational flexibility has been provided in enforcing contracts by way of relaxing some of time-lines prescribed for discoveries so that E&P activities do not suffer on account of excessive rigidity in decision making. The Production Sharing Contract (PSC) between the government and the explorer has rigid time-lines for each stage of exploration and actions have been initiated against firms even if deadlines are missed by a day. "The estimated reserves of discoveries where additional probing has been allowed is to the tune of about 172 million barrels of oil and 1.9 TCF of gas reserves," he said. Three-to-six month extension in the current 18-60 month time-frame for submission of declaration of commerciality (DoC) of discoveries, a prerequisite before investment

he Bloomberg TV India, the nation’s leading English business news channel and India’s definitive guide to the auto industry – Autocar India magazine, recently presented the ‘The Bloomberg TV India Autocar India Awards 2015’ in Mumbai. The winners were felicitated at a dazzling ceremony in the august presence of Chief Guest, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Shipping and Guest of Honour Shaina NC, National Spokesperson & National Executive Council of the BJP and Quaiser Khali, Additional Commissioner of Police –Traffic, Mumbai. The awards based on the theme “Recognizing the evolving needs of the fast-paced Indian; saw fierce competition amongst the most reputed names in the auto sector. A total of 24 awards were given away across two and four wheeler seg-
ments. The Bloomberg TV India Autocar India Awards 2015 was presented by Reliance General Insurance. At the awards, in the four wheeler segment, Hyundai i20 made a sensational debut by winning the ‘Car of the Year (Jury’s Choice), while Honda won the ‘Car Manufacturer of the Year’. In the two wheeler segment, Suzuki Gixxer won the Bike of the Year (Jury’s Choice) while Hyundai i20 & KTM RC 390 bagged the Viewer’s Choice Award in the Car and Bike segment. The list of award winners across all categories is annexed. Lavneesh Gupta, COO – Bloomberg TV India while speaking about the Awards said, “The Indian Auto Industry, which has always been the economy’s growth dynamo, is once again revving up. This acceleration in growth holds the promise of “Achhe Din for the manufacturing sector and millions of youth seeking quality jobs.
plans can be finalised, has been approved. Also, the deadline for submission of investment plan for the discoveries too would be extended by up to six months. The PSC provides for time period for submission of field development plan (FDP) for hydrocarbon discovery after DOC. There is no provision in the PSC for extension of this time period and non-acceptance of FDP due to late submission results in non-monetisation of discoveries. Also, upstream regulator DGH has been given flexibility to accept discoveries for which operators had failed to provide prior notification to the government. Pradhan said the Policy Framework for Relaxations, Extensions and Clarifications at development and production stage under PSC will help early monetisation of hydrocarbon discoveries. Discoveries, mostly of Cairn, ONGC and GSPC were stuck because of lack of flexibility in time-lines.
BSE To Establish First International Exchange At Gujarat's GIFT City By A Business Reporter
T
he Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will establish an International Exchange in GIFT SEZ-IFC, a multi-services Special Economic Zone (SEZ) being developed as India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) by the Gujarat International Finance TecCity Company Ltd (GIFTCL). In this regard, the BSE signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GIFT SEZ Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GIFTCL at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit earlier yesterday. The premier exchange intends to develop an International Exchange providing electronic platform for facilitating trading, clearing and settlement of securities, commodities, interest rates, currencies, other classes of assets and derivatives by International investors subject to receiving necessary approvals and operating guidelines for International Financial Centre. As per the MoU, the BSE along with its associates and members will invest upto Rs. 150 crore for establishing a 3 lakh square feet built-up area (BUA) to set up this International Exchange. GIFT SEZ has been notified as an International Financial Services Centre by the Government of India as India’s first International Financial Centre. In the absence of an IFSC in India, the country has roughly lost 50% market share in the two most important India-related products: with Rupee and Index being mostly traded on foreign platforms instead of onshore trading in such products. For instance, the trading volume of the rupee and India based indices is estimated at over USD 100 billion a day. Overseas venues like SGX (in Singapore), DGCX (in Dubai) and CME (in Chicago, and worldwide), and the global OTC and NDF markets, have been very successful in this trading.
! " # $ % & ' ( ' ) *+,-.
By establishing an International Exchange, even if a small slice of this trading comes back to India it would be a substantial achievement for India. It will also help international companies raise finance from other international investors within the International Finance Centre which can compete on rules, regulations and ease of business with other International Finance Centres such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and London. Ramakant Jha, MD & Group CEO, GIFT Company Ltd said, “BSE’s International Exchange at GIFT City is a major step in making India’s first IFSC into a Global Financial Hub. This agreement has further strengthened our bond with one of the world’s oldest stock exchange. Our aim is to make GIFT at or above par with globally bench-marked financial centres such as Shinjuku-Tokyo, LujiazuiShanghai, La Defense-Paris and London Dockyards. Ashish Chauhan, MD & CEO, BSE said, the “BSE is taking a lead in bringing International standards in India, in technology, compliance, corporate governance, promoting SMEs, creation and trading of sustainable and other indices, including the oldest and most popular India based Index, the S&P BSE Sensex. This will help India to compete with other destinations and allow Indian and international companies, making GIFT as one of the foremost International Financial centres in the World such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and London. Earlier, BSE Brokers’ Forum, the association of BSE brokers, entered into an agreement with GIFT City for setting up their operations and shifting their back-end operations in the domestic finance enclave. BSE Brokers’ Forum has been allotted 4.5 lakh square feet of Development Rights with total investment expected at around Rs 200 crore.

udra Dance Academy presented the debut Bharata Natyam performance of Aishwarya Mohan and Sameeksha Shetty, disciples of Guru Vrunda Upadhyay, at the Savitribai Phule auditorium in Dombivali. It was a pleasure to watch the duo dancing with lot of enthusiasm and excitement. Guru Vrunda Upadyay has established the Mudra Dance Academy with the intention of propagation and promotion of Indian classical dance, by teaching the young aspirants. She is among the senior-most disciples of Guru Ramesh Kubernath Tanjorkar and Guru Leela Tanjorkar. Vrunda is also the recipient of the National Nritya Bhusan Award by Utkal Sanskritik Sangh, Odisha and also performed for the some of the most prestigious festivals all over the country. Aishwarya Mohan and Sameeksha Shetty commenced the performance with the invocatory Kautvams and presented varied items from the Bharata Natyam repertoire; they concluded their programme with Desh Thillana revealing their considerable command over the structural aspect of the dance form. With their little nervousness, they were trying to do their best. With better 'riyaaz', they can aspire to become fine exponents. The duo received fine orchestral support with Guru Vrunda Upadyay on the nattuvangam, Shivaprasad for the vocals, mridangam by Venkatesh, violin by Balasubramaniam, flute by Kumar, ghatam by Mukund and kanjira by Kartik.

eerabai, the saint poetess has fascinated the imagination of writers, artistes and musicians for over five centuries. Novels and plays have been written and performed on her. A raga called 'Mirabai Ki Malhar' exists in the repertoire of Hindustani music. Sarita Bhave, an accomplished classical singer is also creative in her own way. She writes and composes her own songs in Hindi as well as Urdu. 'Meera: Ek Kahan' is a musical monologue written and enacted by her. She sings to the accompaniment of talented musicians like Prasad Padhye (Tabla), Shruti Bhave (Violin) and Varad Kathapurkar (Bansuri) .The performance was held recently at the P L Deshpande Academy, Prabhadevi. It did succeed in mesmerising the audience. Sarita employed a Brechtiean technique through which she kept switching back and forth in time and commenting on contemporary problems and issues confronting women. Her diction is clear and sweet and her voice smoothly delivered the songs which she had composed herself. The songs were not necessarily raga-based but they were melodious. It was a marathon three-hour performance. The annual barsee programme dedicated to the memory of the tabla maestro Amir Hussain Khansaheb was held at the Anandashram Hall in Talmaki Wadi, Tardeo. Latif Khan who originally hails from Jaipur is one of the finest tabla players. He is now based in Paris. He has trained under the late Hidayat Khansaheb. Latif played compositions from the Delhi, Lucknow, Ajrada and Farukhabad gharanas. His fingers have a soft touch and he can also infuse his playing with a lot of energy which sent the audience into raptures. He was accompanied on the harmonium by Siddhesh Bicholkar. Aarati Kamat presented a solo vocal recital with which the programme was rounded off.

Karande, Sunil Tawade, Mangesh Desai and Chaitanya Chandratre. The story of this film has been written by Avadhoot Gupte and Sachin Darekar whereas the
screenplay and dialogues have been penned by Sachin Darekar. Speaking to us, Avdhoot said, “Initially I was working on another film but suddenly this concept
came to me and I told my producer Lashkaria about it who was kind enough to let me go ahead with ‘Ek Taara’ though the mahurat of the earlier film was done and the film was announced and it shows the greatness of Lashkaria. Santosh Juvekar was the last name in my mind but he impressed us in the auditions where he came prepared with the look of the character and his overall dialogue delivery and presentation impressed us and he was on board for the film and he has done a great job.” “I have taken the help of outside music directors for my film for the first time like young and talented Mithilesh Patankar who has scored fabulous songs. The first half of the film is based on Dnyaneshwar Meshram’s life,” Gupte said.

He also stressed on the importance of becoming mentally stronger as a tournament progresses, a trait which has helped teams like Germany.
"What has worked well for German hockey is that they have been able to get better as the tournament continues. When they come and start a tournament they are not as strong as they are in the end. So far, Australia and Germany are mentally very strong in important games, an aspect which should not be underestimated," he explained. Looking ahead to the HIL commencing on January 22, Altenburg wanted his team members to play by wearing their hearts on their sleeves. "I want to have a team that plays emotional hockey. I like players who play with a heart. Already we have a good squad here. With the internationals coming in we have to orchestrate our concept. We have a team with a few very young and promising talent. We also have a lot of very experienced players who

had played lot of World Cups and international cups. I want their opinion of hockey to be integrated in our Dabang Mumbai concept." Rasquinha, who is the franchise team's mentor, said the first goal of the team was to enter the semi finals of the six-team league. He felt the first two games, both at home at the Mahindra Stadium here, will be crucial ones. "We will have the full squad by the 15th. We play our first match on the 23rd. Our first target is to reach semi finals. We will take one step at a time. The first two games are very crucial. We first take on Jaypee Punjab Warriors which finished runner up last year and has a big Australian contingent most of them WC gold medalists. We will first concentrate on the first two matches," said the former India skipper.

N Gayle slams selectors for excluding Pollard, Bravo J
OHANNESBURG: Destructive West Indies opener Chris Gayle launched a scathing attack on the country's Cricket Board and the national selectors for excluding allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard from the World Cup squad, terming the move as "ridiculous". The Clive Lloyd-led selection panel named a 15member squad for the upcoming 50-over showpiece event in Australia and New Zealand starting February 14. Gayle was far from happy by the omission of Bravo and Pollard. "How can those two guys not be in the team?" Gayle said in the post-match conference. "To me it got to be like victimisation when you look at it towards those two guys. Come on, guys. It is just ridiculous. Come on. Ridiculous. Really hurt. Ridiculous. Honestly, it throws me off. We can only talk. We can express our feelings, which I'm doing at this point in time. The squad already is announced. It is just sad.
Lahiri voted 2014 Asian Tour Player of the year
KUALA LUMPUR: Anirban Lahiri has been voted the 2014 Players' Player of the Year for his successful exploits on the Asian Tour, where he won two titles and finished second on the Order of Merit. The talented Indian won his first title outside of India when he eagled the 72nd hole at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters before going on to claim his second win of the year at the Venetian Macau Open, which increased his tally to five Asian Tour titles. In a highly successful season, Lahiri contended for the Asian Tour Order of Merit crown before losing out to David Lipsky of the United States, who sealed the win in the second last event on the 2014 Asian Tour season at the Thailand Golf Championship.
"It is a big batting line-up when you look at our team. But it's just disappointing when you look at the 50over format - we won't be at our strongest," Gayle said. "We don't have our strongest team without Pollard, nor Bravo. So that is actually sad for us. It is a really big blow for us to actually lose two key players, two key allrounders as well, very good in the outfield. I don't know what's the history behind it, but it is a ridiculous selection from my point of view." Jason Holder has been appointed captain of the side with Marlon Samuels as his deputy and Gayle also finds a place but the exclusion of Pollard and Bravo is a a huge surprise. "I don't know where our cricket is actually going to ...Where we are heading with this sort of situation. But it is really sad. Actually we won the [Twenty20] series with our best team and now there will be changes, with two of our biggest players in ODI cricket not involved in the 50-over format and the World Cup. It really hurts.”
EW DELHI: Former captain Anil Kumble has said that the mindset of the Indian cricket team management must change and there has to be a more flexible approach in selecting the bowlers in the playing XI on overseas tours. The performance of the Indian bowlers in the recent four-Test series in Australia, which they lost 0-2, came for severe criticism, and Kumble felt "some portion of the criticism is justified". "We have the quality of bowlers, it's just trying to see who can adjust to the Test format and then choosing your best four bowlers who you think can pick up 20 wickets, that's also been an issue," Kumble told 'ESPNcricinfo' in an interview. Kumble said that there has to be flexibility in selecting XIs when on tour as it can't work on the theory of three seamers and one spinner every time. "We have gone into this theory of three seamers and one spinner the moment we sit on an aircraft which travels more than seven hours - that's the mindset...If your 20 wickets are going to come with two spinners and two fast bowlers, so be it. If it comes with three spinners and one fast bowler so be it," India's highest wicket-taker in Test and ODI cricket, pointed out. Citing the example of the Adelaide Test, where on a track known to favour the batsmen and assist spinners from halfway through the Test, India went in with a single spinner in Karn Sharma. "So who got wickets for Australia then? If you look at the top two bowlers, it was one

spinner and one fast bowler," said Kumble. Australian offspinner Nathan Lyon was the series' top wicket-taker with 23 wickets. Kumble said that excess of limited-over cricket, both ODIs and Twenty20s, have led to the Indian bowlers "not being that disciplined in their approach to bowling when it comes to Tests". "You are constantly thinking of pre-empting a batsman because you think he will play this shot - that's what you do in one-day cricket. You are always guessing and trying to out-guess the batsman. In Test cricket you need to bowl line and length - it is that simple -

YDNEY: His idol Sachin Tendulkar has often got clicked with Roger Federer during Wimbledon and today it was the turn of Indian cricket team's batting maestro Virat Kohli to meet the Swiss tennis legend. "A Day i'll never forget. Greatness on and off the court. @rogerfederer Absolute legend," Kohli tweeted after meeting Federer, a winner of a staggering 17 Grand Slams. The Indian also posted a picture in which he is seen sharing the space with Federer. Kohli is just coming off a highly successful Test series against Australia Down Under where he amassed nearly 700 runs in four match. And Federer yesterday triumphed in the Brisbane Open, achieving a landmark 1000th win in the process. It was not just the Indian
and keep repeating the same thing. That will only come with playing more of this format, and that will only come with what kind of an approach (you have) prior to heading off (on tour). "It's the simple thing that needs to be considered. Test cricket is all about building pressure and how you can sustain it, the longer you can sustain the pressure, the more successful you can be," explained Kumble. The former leg-spinner said the Indian bowlers should "not look over their shoulder". "You can't be looking over your shoulder and ask which ball should I bowl, what field
NEW DELHI: Batting legend Rahul Dravid has backed Virat Kohli to lead the Indian cricket team on a long- term basis, describing him as the ideal leader around whom the country can plan its Test future. Kohli led the Indian side in two matches in the justconcluded Test series in Australia, which they lost 0-2, but Dravid said that the BCCI can keep faith in him as he can lead the team and also perform individually. "I think it's early days for Virat. But he's shown that he can lead. One of the biggest pluses for me was his own performance in this series. Now we know that Virat's a shoo-in candidate for the captaincy, he's someone whom Indian cricket can plan long-term with, and that's what they should do," Dravid said. "The worst thing would have been, for someone like Virat, who was the obvious successor to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to have not performed and not been sure of his own place, which was one of the concerns after the tour of England. But that's not the case," he told ESPNcricinfo.

ARCELONA: Lionel Messi scored one goal and set up two more for Neymar and Luis Suarez as Barcelona beat defending champion Atletico Madrid 31 on Sunday, rejuvenating its Spanish league title bid amid a chaotic week for the Catalan club. Stifled by Atletico in six winless meetings last season, Messi shredded its vaunted defense with run after run, passing for Neymar to score in the 12th minute and for Suarez to double the lead at Camp Nou in the 35th. Messi was guilty of also setting up Atletico's goal in the 57th when he fouled Jesus Gamez in the area, allowing Mario Mandzukic to score from the spot. But the star forward finished off the visitors with a goal three minutes from time for his 25th goal in as many FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi duels for the ball against Atletico Madrid's goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya during games this season. Granada fell to the bot-

Eight months ago Atletico won the league title in a winner-takes-all finale at Camp Nou, whose fans ended up honoring the victors while jeering their own team. On Sunday, it was "Messi! Messi!" that rang out after Suarez's goal. Barcelona has had one of its most tumultuous weeks in recent memory after it lost its appeal of a one-year transfer ban for violating FIFA's rules for registering youth players. That blow was followed by the firing of ports director on Monday and president Josep Bartomeu announcing the club would hold early elections after this season. Rumors were also swirling that coach Luis Enrique could be the next to go, including speculation that his relationship with Messi had soured. But Messi and his teammates pushed those troubles aside for its second lopsided win in four days after thrashing Elche 5-0 in the Copa del

Rey on Thursday. Messi was awarded a trophy by the Spanish league before kickoff for breaking Telmo Zarra's all-time scoring record in November that had stood at 251 goals since 1955. Messi then proceeded to wreak havoc with repeated dribbles into the thick of Atletico's area. He unlocked the defense with a burst of speed before his short cross eventually fell to Neymar after Suarez couldn't control it for the Brazil striker to toe past goalkeeper Miguel Moya's reach. With Barcelona pressing for a second goal, Atletico turned up its physicality with hard fouls on both Neymar and Messi. Neymar spent five minutes on the sideline having a bloody right ankle tended to after Jose Gimenez's tackle, and Jesus Gamez was booked for sending Messi tumbling to the turf. But Suarez got his second goal in 10 league matches after Messi sprinted with the ball at his feet for half the pitch and passed to the striker.
I am motivated by excellence: Leander Paes By R Eswar
C
HENNAI: The passion to achieve excellence everyday is what motivates Leander Paes the most and the ageless wonder's mantra in life is to focus on positives. In an exclusive chat with PTI, the 41-year-old tennis legend explained how he keeps himself motivated to come on to the courts everyday and produce magnificent results. "I am motivated by excellence. And motivated by to be being the best every day and every department of my life as a son, patriot, and athlete and as a father. What drives me is that I find every day that I can get better. Even when I am going to be 42 in six months time, I want to keep improving. I want to be the best every day and in every department," Paes said The winner of 12 Grand Slam titles said there will be always be difficult circumstances in life but the key was to focus on the bright side. "The obstacles are out of your control but what you can really control is the way you react to it. The way you deal with it. What is the use of getting angry…feeling depressed, it does not solve anything. At the end of the day my racquet does the talking. There is no reason to get down. "In our country you are going to have lot of adversity. For me, the way I live my life is the values in life and ethics. The way I have been brought up with. "That is something in

which I believe very strongly. I will fight for what I believe in. I always go for the truth. But at the same time you have to be tactful in dealing with adversities," he said When asked to cite an example how he overcame
hardships in life according to his philosophy, Paes recalled the days when he encountered a life-threatening brain tumour. "Yes, there were times when I felt the adversity is so much and why. Then you
also realise that you are so blessed. You should remember that I had come from a place where I had a tumour in the head and I was given only six months to live. So, when you come back from a space like that you realise that what are the important things in life and it is very clear. And, in that where I choose to live in." Paes said he does not give much importance to his critics. "For every one person, that is negative (for me), I probably got millions of people who are positive. So, why worry about that one person, when you got million other people are positive. I listen to critics but also see if it is correct or wrong." Talking about future of Indian tennis, Paes was of the view surely the numbers of players has gone up but India need better players. "Earlier, it used to be only me or two three other guys. Now there are 15 or 20 guys are playing, who are close to each other on ATP ranking. But, I still feel that to play at the top levels you can easily differentiate between the best and everybody who is around 200 or three hundred in the world and then you can differentiate the guys in the top 10 or 20. "I think that all of us have a lot of improving to do. All of us have to work on our games. But really the numbers have grown and now we need to keep getting the quality better. There is no reason as to why you cannot do it here. Just the work ethics, we all need to keep improving."
Have to earn awards and not hanker after them: Advani K
OLKATA: Criticising the recent furore over Padma Bhushan, ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani said one must let the performance do the talking and not hanker after such government awards. "I would never go out and protest, you have to earn such awards and do not hanker for it. I'm also waiting for the decision," Advani, a 10-time world snooker and billiards title winner, told reporters on the sidelines of the National Billiards & Snooker Championships here. "We cannot demand recognition, we cannot
demand certain things from the government or public. We are here to do our job. We love playing and and doing our best. If you let your performance do the talking -- in any sport -- you will get it one day or other." Confirming that he also has been nominated for the third highest civilian award, Advani said: "Just as you're asking I would like to say that my application is also gone and if the government thinks I don't deserve it then so be it. I'm sure the government has certain processes in place."
