T
he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government won the vote of confidence in the assembly yesterday amidst deafening noise and disturbances created by the Opposition members – the Congress and the Shiv Sena. The confidence motion was passed by a voice vote. There was no immediate demand for a division vote. The Opposition – the Congress and the Shiv Sena – reacted
sharply to the observation of the Speaker and that pointed out as per rules, a division vote should have been taken. There was no cheers but there was jeering when the Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao came to the House and there was continuing disruption as the Governor went on with his address. The Speaker suspended five MLAs of the Opposition and brought some order in the House. When the Governor arrived at the Vidhan Sabha to deliver
his address, a mob tried to stop him from entering the House. There was heated arguments between the MLAs and the Governor's security men – including his ADC. Finally the Governor was able to deal with the pushing around that was going on and entered the House. Even as all the shouting was going on, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) members sat quietly. What is to be noted is that even if the division vote was taken, the BJP
would have had the votes of NCP and got a clean vote of confidence. Did the Opposition MLAs want to prove that the BJP had aligned with the NCP? Speaking to newspersons later at Vidhan Bhavan press room, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis argued that the trust motion was as per rules. Claiming to have won the trust vote, he challenged the Opposition to move a No Confidence motion against the government. Chief Minis-
ter argued that no political party in the house demanded a division of votes and that division of votes is not held after trust motion is adopted by voice vote. He lashed out at the Congress for what he called their misbehavior with Governor as he tried to enter the legislature building to deliver his joint address to both the houses of the state legislature. Speaking to newspersons later newly appointed leader of Opposition Eknath Shinde
and Congress leaders termed the trust vote won by the BJP as an assault on parliamentary democracy. During the process of trust vote both the Congress and NCP MLAs were sitting quiet in the House. The trust vote was adopted with the NCP keeping silent and abstaining from taking part in the vote. Since the motion was carried by a voice vote it was not clear as to by how many votes Continued on pg 8 «

What's worse, the newly inducted ambulance in the Central Railway could not reach even in four hours to transport the dead body from St George hospital to JJ hospital for postmortem, police officials said. Social workers alleged that
it was lapse on part of railway station manager who did not arrange a ambulance to transport the mortal remains to nearest hospital, and instead directed the Government Railway Police to transport the victim by local train to St George hospital instead JJ hospital which was in close proximity of the accident site. According to police, around 1.40pm a railway passenger fell down from a running train in between Sandhurst Road

Instead the station manger directed the GRP to transport the injured victim by local train to St George hospital. Victim who is yet to be identified had sustained injuries on head and hands. At St George hospital, doctors declared the victim as dead on arrival. St George hospital
authorities refused to carry out postmortem of the dead body stating that it was not in their jurisdiction, and also because victim's identity was yet to be ascertained and due to of lack of space in their mortuary. The authorities accordingly asked the GRP to shift the body. GRP was ready to shift the dead body to JJ Hospital but due to lack of ambulance Continued on pg 8 «

Though the answer keys have been updated, the results have not been declared by the Universities Grants Commission. The delay in results has put the candidates in a dilemma as they stand to lose in salaries and also in their positions in their colleges and institutions. MAYHEM IN THE HOUSE: The series of pictures shows Governor C Vidyasagar Rao who arrived at the Vidhan Sabha being mauled by angry Congress MLAs. Led on by MPCC president Manikrao Thakre, the MLAs were protesting against the confidence motion won by the BJP government through a voice vote in the Assembly. A Congress MLA is being tackled by a bodyguard, while the Governor's Aide de Camp and BJP MLA Girish Mahajan are seen trying to make way for the Governor so he could enter the Vidhan Sabha.
AMU vice-chancellor: Keep girls out of libraries
Aligarh Muslim University's vicechancellor wants to prevent the overcrowding of the library. To achieve this objective, he wants to keep the girls out. He does not want them inside the library. He feels that if the girls are there, the number of boys who will go to the library will increase. And the hapless boys will not be able to study or collect information. Boys will be boys and naturally they will be attracted by the girls. In that case, the library may become a place for other activities. The vice-chancellor has evidently made sexist remarks. He wants to make out that girls are not serious and they do not want to collect any information. He wants us to believe that girls go to libraries only to attract boys. His proposal to keep the girls out of libraries has attracted sharp criticism. Next he may say girls should stay away from coeducational institutions where boys may be attracted by them. The effort of the vice-chancellor is to prevent boys being attracted by girls. Maybe the vice-chancellor will
approve if the girls go to libraries fully clad in burqas.
When Delhi police forgot the password...for eight year Early this year, reports of the
Delhi police having failed to act on hundres of corruption complaints over an eight-year period surfaced because they did not know a computer password, it seems. The Delhi officers could not operate a portal holding more than 600 complaints – a lapse that went undetected since 2006. The complaints came from India's anti-corruption agency, called the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) which collates complaints against government officials and directs law enforcement to investigate them. The commission received as many as 36,000 complaints against the ruling system in 2013. In 2006, a portal monitored by the CVC was created, putting the complaints it sent to departments online. Each department could access the portal with a password. Complaints regarding the Delhi Police were also sent to the portal. In January, two Delhi police officers were called to the CVC headquarters. It emerged then that the police had not even accessed the complaints addressed to it as it
had not logged into the portal. Finally the two officers, one of the level of deputy commissioner of police and another an inspector, were imparted “training” by the CVC and can now access the 667 cases that have piled up since the portal launched. Every year, the CVC holds meetings with government departments to take
stock of the complaints with them. But since they launched the portal in 2006, the CVC had got no feedback on complaints pending with the police. One officer said that the oversight was "a technical problem", and complaints are now being addressed. We certainly hope so.
Backward-front love story
We've come a long way from those unreal fairy-tale love stories, where boy meets girl, falls in love, gets married, has babies and lives happily every after. With women getting more and more independent in the modern world, a lot of them are opting to have children out of wedlock through invitro fertilisation (IVF) using sperm from an anonymous donor. Here's a modern age love story of a British-born woman who had a child through IVF, tracked down the donor so her child could meet him, fell in love with him and then got married. Aminah Hart, a 45-year-old woman, only met her fiance after she had given birth to their daughter Leila. Through the sperm donor profile, she knew that the father of her child was Scott Andersen, an Australian cattle farmer who lives on an island. She liked that he had listed himself as “happy and healthy”. Aminah discovered his identity through a series of internet searches based on his name as well as his profession as a cattle breeder and his role as a Aussie rules football coach. Rather than contact him directly, however, she contacted him via the official IVF register. He was not legally required to meet Leila until she turned 18 but agreed to anyway, especially after he received a photo of his baby and saw how much she looked like both him and his four other children from two previous marriages. They agreed to meet for the first time in Melbourne four days after Leila’s first birthday. Soon after, the pair fell in love and have now announced they are engaged.

A resolution to this effect was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Mehta seeking to suspend Rahul Bondre, Abdul Sattar, Amar Kale, Virendra Jagtap and Jaikumar Gore, passed by the house through voice vote. The MLAs were protesting against the unconstitutional manner in which the motion of confidence in the government was passed by voice vote instead of a division vote. SC resounding yes to women make-up artists to work in film industry By Zuber Ansari
A
lmost ten days after the Supreme Court order wherein it provided a resounding yes to woman make-up artists by effectively stating that women can be employed as make-up artists in the film industry. Following this landmark ruling, thousands of city based woman make-up artists have approached various associations to register themselves and in the process, creating a beeline for the jobs on offer, as and when they will be available. Due to monopoly of various male make-up artists in
the Bollywood film industry, especially in Mumbai, the women make-up artists were hitherto not allowed entry, in what can be essentially viewed as a rather 'feminine' domain. But the Supreme Court ruling has changed it all. The Indian film industry is the largest in world by ticket sales. It produces between 300 to 325 movies a year and, although there are no official figures, trade analysts say the Hindi-language industry alone employs more than 250,000 people, most of them contract workers. While women work in most areas, including as technicians and hairdressers, Harmeet Singh Anand the industry hitherto had no place for women to work as work. make-up artists. A
day after the brutal murder of Sagufta Khan, Mumbai's crime branch questioned a dozen men including a person named Siraj, who was the most likely killer, till Tuesday. Siraj's interrogation revealed that a person named Arvind Gupta alias Guddu is the killer, as he was the latest paramour of deceased Khan, informed a highly placed officer from crime branch, which is also probing the case besides the city police.
Before Guddu, it was Siraj who was Khan's boyfriend, added the police. According to the police, in the past Guddu was driver of big shot cricket bookie Sonu Jalan, who had longtime illicit relationship with Khan. After leaving Jalan's job, Guddu started working in Siraj's mobile shop in western suburbs. After a small tiff with Siraj, Guddu left the job and started driving his father's rickshaw. Meanwhile, the police are now certain about Guddu

being the killer, as the two minor daughters of Khan have identified Guddu from the CCTV footage of the building. According to the two girls' statements, Guddu visted their home on Tuesday. Police had also questioned a prostitute from western suburbs, who knew Guddu, as the latter frequently visited her, said police. The prostitute has identified Guddu being the person in the CCTV footage, added police. Meanwhile, police are now questioning the kith and kin of Guddu and are also visiting the places, which were usually visited by him. Till the time of going to press, Guddu was absconding, said the officer adding that the crime branch is very close to cracking the case. On Tuesday afternoon at 3.40 pm, Khan was murdered inside her flat at Rustomjee apartments at Marve Road in Malad (W). City's crime branch has formed three squads to trace the accused, for which one team has gone to the interior parts of Maharashtra, while another team has reached the northern parts of India. Police has circulated Guddu's photos to all the informers in the city, said police adding that these photos are being circulated in the bookies' circle by the informers, as Guddu was known to several bookies when he was driving Jalan's car. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
“Why should only a male artist be allowed to put makeup? How can it be said that only men can be make-up artists and women can be hairdressers? t the Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Standing Committee meeting yesterday, the opposition parties walked out together when the mayor said that dengue is just a simple fever which is being unnecessarily hyped by the media. The opposition, however, believe that the corporation is failing to create awareness among the people to prevent dengue from spreading in the city. Mayor Snehal Ambekar on Tuesday claimed that the media had exaggerated the intensity of the dengue outbreak in the city, only to clarify later that her remark was "misconstrued". "Dengue is an epidemic, but the media has blown it out of proportion. You (the media) are making it look like a very big problem," Ambekar said on Tuesday after her visit to a suburban hospital. The opposition leaders of the BMC were very disappointed by the statement made by the mayor. Congress leader at the BMC, Devendra Amberkar said, “As a citizen of this city, it is very shocking to know that the mayor, who

Then when I contacted Dr Suhasini Nagda, director of civic hospitals, she replied saying she has no reports with her.” Sandeep Deshpande leader of the MNS party of the BMC said, “The corporation does not even have the reports of private hospitals and no one is bothered to ask for them as well. If health officers of the private hospitals seek out this information, it will be so shameful to answer that we do not have the information with us?” Rayis Shaikh, leader of the Samajwadi Party in the BMC, said, “The mayor is being insensitive about this issue and is at fault. The officers involved never answer calls of the people. We are here as the people's representative and if we do not get information, how do we answer the people outside?” Manoj Kotak, the leader of the BJP in the BMC, said, “Pyrethrum oil which is being used in the fumigation process is of very low quality yet the BMC is not bothering to ban the use of the oil.”

RPI moves HC seeking dissolution of State Assembly R
PI led by Prakash Ambedkar on Wednesday moved the Bombay High Court seeking dissolution of the newlyformed assembly in Maharashtra and imposition of President's rule, contending that the government has been functioning ‘illegally’ since November 8. A division bench of Justices V.M. Kanade and Anuja Prabhudessai kept the petition for hearing on Thursday.
The petition, filed by 69year-old Republican Party of India (RPI) Secretary Jairam Pawar, said it was challenging the action of political parties to form government and take oath after the dissolution of the previous legislative assembly. It said the new assembly had not come into force within the stipulated time prescribed as per the government notification issued on September 20.
The petition said that a notification was issued to dissolve the Assembly on September 20 and the elections were to be conducted as per the electoral programme on October 15. The results were to be declared on October 19.As per the notification, the earlier legislative assembly was to dissolve on November 8, 2014, and hence the council of ministers was duty-bound to see and ensure
that the next legislative assembly should be in place and should be summoned on or before that date, states the petition. However, the council of ministers took oath on November 10, it said. Article 163 of the Constitution of India provides that there shall be a council of ministers with Chief Minister as the head to aid and advice the Governor in administration of its functions and discharge of its duties.

RAVI CHOPRA PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 68
By A Staff Reporter
E
minent producer-director Ravi Chopra, passed away on Wednesday at Breach Candy Hospital at 3.30 pm. The 'Baghbaan' director was hospitalised and was said to be making a recovery. Sources close to the family said that the veteran filmmaker was suffering from a neurodegenerative disease. The doyen of B.R. Films enterprise, started by the movie moghul B.R. Chopra, produced and directed films like ‘Zameer’, ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Mazdoor’, Dehleez’, ‘Baghbaan’, ‘Bhootnath', ‘Bhootnath Returns’, ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai' (unreleased). He was the man behind the trendsetting epic show on Indian television, ‘Mahabharat’. Ravi was the nephew of Yash Chopra who passed away recently. He was recently under stress because of his latest film ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’, a remake of the Oscar winning film 'My Cousin Vinny', for which he had to obtained the official rights for a high price. The film stars Govinda and Lara Dutta in key roles and has been lying in the can for several years. It was his ‘Zameer’ friend Amitabh Bachchan who came to his rescue by acting in 'Bhootnath Returns' which was a mega hit. The 68-year director is survived by his wife Renu and two sons.
Ravi Chopra: Personal facets
As a human being, the hugely talented producerdirector, Ravi Chopra was always warm, courteous and downto-earth with no starry airs of being the legendary filmmaker
B R Chopra’s son. Whenever he held lavish private film parties on the sprawling lawns of the B R Villa bungalow on Juhu Tara Road, for the launching or for the success of his various films or TV projects, he would personally look after almost every guest and prove to be an impeccable host. In his bass baritone voice, he would say, “party mein mere saare mehmaan mere liye khaas hai, I never distinguish between the VIPs and non-VIPs. Success multiplies like waves when you share it with all your well-wishers.” This correspondent recalls an incident during 1988, when the telly mega-epic ‘Mahabharat’ was newly launched on Doordarshan. Actor Nitish Bharadwaj was discreetly finalised to play Lord Krishna, but this inside information was kept tightly under wraps, while the rest of the cast, as to who’splaying-what mythological character was formally announced. When he was cornered about this ‘breaking news’, he said, “Yes we have signed Nitish, but we will be announcing it officially after a week. But pl-e-a-s-e do not reveal this as of now, as there is an embargo.” Respecting his earnest sentiments, the ‘breaking news’ (then known as ‘scoop’) was held back for a while. Ravi then sent the correspondent a ‘surprise’ small box of Punjabi mithaai with a ‘thank-you’ note. That showed how well Ravi reciprocated. When asked about his favourite movies, he said, “Actually it is very unfair to be partial. But among the string of films that I directed it's ‘The Burning Train’ for being a trend-setting musical suspense thriller. Much later it was ‘Baaghbaan’ for highlighting today’s generation,” he smiled.

Opposition poses challenge F
rom now on, it is likely that the Maharashtra assembly will not go on smoothly. What happened yesterday clearly shows that the opposition will create disturbances at the slightest provocation. They have a major grievance motion against the speaker who passed the no-confidence motion on a voice vote. The opposition has objected to this and they said their demand for a division should not have been rejected by the speaker. In an important issue like this, the demand for a division vote is not unreasonable or against rules. There is however one happening that justifies the speaker’s action. The demand for division was not made immediately but a little later. The vote of confidence sought by the BJP is so important that the speaker could have ordered a division vote. The Congress and the Shiv Sena MLAs are likely to carry on their protest. The speaker had no go perhaps but to suspend five MLAs. The problem will not disappear by suspending the Congress and Shiv Sena members. There are 104 MLAs belonging to this party and they can cause a lot of trouble to the government — in the house. Does the BJP government want to carry on the government without the opposition in the house? As things stand, it looks like the only way would be to take required measures to make the opposition members to be in the house and play a purposeful and peaceful role.
A
S I write this column, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the ‘confidence’ motion on the floor of the state Assembly and thus the newly installed government, headed by Devendra Fadnavis has survived at least till the next year, when the Assembly would pass a budget for the state. However, the question arises that has the BJP played a fair game? The answer is negative. The newly-elected Speaker, Haribhau Bagde, announced that the confidence motion was carried on a ‘voice vote’. He passed this ruling despite the fact that many Opposition members; including Shiv Sena and Congress had raised the demand for ‘division’ of votes. Going by the norms and precedents of the House, even if a single member demands division, the presiding authority is obliged to go for actual ‘head count’. Bagde decided otherwise and announced his decision. As per the rule book, Speaker’s verdict cannot be challenged on any forum, including the courts of law. Therefore, the efforts of Sena and Congress leaders to approach the Governor to seek redressal are bound to be futile. Now that the government has won the lease of life and thus will survive, does it mean that it can provide an effective and stable government? The series of events that took place in the state Vidhan Bhavan raised more questions than answers. The moot question is, when the Speaker said the motion was carried by ‘voice vote’, whose ‘voice’ was he talking about? Was it the ‘voice of the entire House’ or ‘His Masters’ Voice’, seating on the treasury benches? An honest answer to this question is important as it would decide the course of politics of the BJP in particular and Maharashtra in general. The last State Assembly delivered a near fractured verdict, with no single party reaching the magic figure of 145 to establish clear majority to rule the state. The Governor allowed Devendra Fadnavis, the leader of the single largest party – the BJP – to form the government, but with a proviso of establishing its majority on the floor of the Assembly within 15 days. Accordingly, a special session was convened. It had become loud and clear even before Devendra took the oath that his government would win the confidence test as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had unilaterally declared its ‘unconditional’ support to his government ostensibly to maintain political stability. However, the BJP did not want to show that it banked on the NCP for survival

as it was BJP that had come down heavily on the NCP and called names to its leaders and also leveled serious charges of corruption against its former ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who actively participated in the state-level election campaign, had gone to the extent of describing the NCP as ‘Naturally Corrupt Party’. After all this, it was difficult to show the world that the government survived on the support of the 41 MLAs of the NCP.
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut On the other hand, Shiv Sena, playing hardball was not ready to succumb under pressure and decided to opt for the Opposition side, rather than joining the government and play second fiddle for the next five years.
Breach of Propriety Under these circumstances, BJP had no other option but to either take shelter of NCP’s support or to use special powers and privileges of the Speaker. By allowing the Voice Vote to carry, BJP managed to survive without support from the NCP on record. However, it breached all norms, practices and points of propriety of Parliamentary democracy. Though there is no rule book dictate as to when physical division is to be conducted and the issue is normally left to the discretion of the presiding authority (Speaker in this case), going by the practice and observations made by many senior constitution experts and parliamentarians, division of votes, particularly when asked for, is obligatory on issues of prime importance like vote of confidence. Bagde has clearly flouted the rules in this regard. This was Bagde's first day in the chair and perhaps the first important ruling. Going by his character, it is difficult to believe that

AN love be divided into the sacred and the profane, the human and the divine, or is there only love? Is love of the one and not of the many? If I say, ‘I love you’, does that exclude the love of the other? Is love personal or impersonal? Moral or immoral? Family or non-family? If you love mankind can you love the particular? Is love sentiment? Is love emotion? Is love pleasure and desire? All these questions indicate, don't they, that we have ideas about love, ideas about what it should or should not be, a pattern or a code developed by the culture in which we live. So to go into the question of what love is we must first ideals and ideologies of what it should or should not be. Now how am I going to find out what this flame is which we call love — not how to express it to another but what it means in itself? I will first reject what the society, what my parents and friends, what every person and every book has said about it because I want to find out for myself what it is. Here is an enormous
problem that involves the whole of mankind, there have been a thousand ways of defining it and I myself am caught in some pattern or other according to what I like or enjoy at the moment — so shouldn't I, in order to understand it, first free myself from my own inclinations and prejudices? MATTER & SPIRIT up your own confusion. Perhaps you may be able to discover what love is through what it is not.' The government says, ‘Go and kill for the love of your country’. Is that love? Religion says, ‘Give up sex for the love of God’. Is that love? Is love desire? Don't say no. For most of us it is – desire with pleasure, the pleasure that is derived through the senses, through sexual attachment and fulfilment. I am not against sex, but see what is involved in it. What sex gives you momentarily is the total
he was convinced when he delivered his ruling. Was he then influenced by the pressure of the circumstances? Was he listening to his inner voice or the voice of his masters, who elevated him to the coveted position of Speaker? It is difficult to make any comment on the so-called intention of the Speaker while delivering a verdict. Our norms and rules of the concept of Breach of Privileges are so fragile, that any untoward comment can attract contempt provision. However, I say this with all due respect to the Legislative practices, the elected House and also the Speaker of the Assembly. If the BJP, which has nominated Bagde to preside over this august house, has been talking about honesty and transparency in public life, it would have been apt if division of vote was conducted before the motion was allowed to be carried. However, for reasons best known to the leadership, it did not happen.
Question of Peace and Harmony Does this mean that now there would be peace and harmony and the government would be able to conduct its business effectively? We will have to wait and watch. Congress in the state is totally demoralized and in a poor minority in the Assembly and in the state. NCP has virtually crossed the floor and is now siding with the BJP. But Shiv Sena, having strength of 63 members in Assembly and a huge network of workers all over the state, would not allow peaceful nights to Devendra and his team. NCP chief Sharad Pawar, known to be a slippery customer, would also wait for the right opportunity to pull the carpet from under Devendra’s feet. The first test after this so-called confidence vote would come during the next session, when the Assembly would vote for ‘supplementary demands’ at Nagpur. Since these demands are considered a ‘money bill’, a defeat in clearing the demands can cause sudden death of the government. If clever, either Shiv Sena or Congress will bring in a ‘one rupee cut motion’ and press for division of votes. It would be interesting to watch, who would bail BJP out then. Or would BJP engineer a mass-scale split in the Shiv Sena or Congress and take resignations from the rebel MLAs with active assurance to get them elected again? It would be a real risky gamble. Would BJP play it? Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut
abandonment of yourself, then you are back again with your turmoil, so you want a repetition over and over again of that state in which there is no worry, no problem, no self. You say you love your wife. In that love is involved sexual pleasure, the pleasure of having someone in the house to look after your children, to cook. You depend on her; she has given you her body, her emotions, her encouragement, a certain feeling of security and well-being. Then she turns away from you; she gets bored or goes off with someone else, and your whole emotional balance is destroyed, and this disturbance, which you don't like, is called jealousy. There is pain, anxiety and violence. So what you are really saying is, “As long as you belong to me I love you but the moment you don't, I begin to hate you. As long as I can rely on you to satisfy my demands, sexual and otherwise, I love you, but the moment you cease to supply what I want I don't like you.' So there is antagonism between you, there is separation, and when you feel separate from another there is no love. — Jiddu Krishnamurti

SINCE people think I have a Chinese crystal ball, I have information to the world of politics. So here is my forecast. If the BJP approaches the Sena, and the Sena snubs the BJP, the BJP who is the former ally of Sena, and the Sena who is today not the ally of BJP may ally with the BJP, and the BJP may not sit with the Sena who once sat with the BJP. So the Sena who wants the BJP to smile and the BJP who is smiling may not smile at the Sena. In all this the BJP who wants to give, the Sena may not take and the Sena may give what the BJP does not take. The common people of Maharashtra don't know where to look.

Clean sweep IT is a matter of regret that an excellent initiative of the Prime Minister has been reduced to a photo operation to benefit the personal status of movie stars and politicians. When the Prime Minister announced the Clean India movement, I believe that he was using it as a metaphor. It is true that we need to improve our standards of cleanliness in every way and starting at the ground level was a way to get the message across far and wide effectively. Ultimately, he is suggesting that we clean our minds, our actions, our words and our deeds. Whilst the initiative has received only compliments, what was stage managed in New Delhi by some 'hungry' politicians and celebrities is highly condemnable. The persons who engineered this, along with the people who participated in this game should not be let off with a mere rap on the knuckles; they should be unceremoniously kicked out from politics and shamed in society. Fed up with erratic MBMT service, commuters had demanded revival of ST buses on Bhayandar-Uttan route
By Suresh Golani
B
owing down to public convenience, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) authorities after a huge nine-year-gap has fi-
nally decided to resume its bus services on the Bhayandar-Uttan route. The resumption of services is all set to bring muchneeded respite to thousands of commuters who were forced to rely on the erratic
and rickety bus services provided by the civic appointed private operator. The MSRTC had stalled its operations on the Bhayandar-Uttan route after the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) introduced its own public
transport authority in 2005. After operating bus services on its own for a couple of years, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) utility adopted the Public-Private-Partnership format and inked a 10-year pact on a Build-OwnO p e r a t e - a n d - Tr a n s f e r (BOOT) with Ulhasnagarbased Kestrel Infrastructure which agreed to pay a royalty of Rs 1 per km. However, the PPP model turned out to be a Pro-PrivatePlayer (PPP) deal that translated into a nightmare for local bus commuters who have been complaining about the erratic bus frequency and the tottering condition of buses. Irked over the failure of the private operator to improve the bus services, commuters under the aegis of the local passenger associations, demanded immediate restoration of the good old ST buses on the Bhayandar-Uttan route. Complying to their demands, the ST authorities finally gave its nod to re-in-
troduce the buses on this route which runs through the rural and coastal areas including Rai-Murdha-MorvaDongri-Uttan villages. “With poor bus schedules, old and rickety buses that are well past their life, frequent breakdowns, we have umpteen reasons to complain about the services provided by the private operator. We are thankful to the concerned authorities that the good old and trusted ST
buses will be back on roads,” said Kumar Pillai, a regular commuter. However, the fate of the buses run by the private operator on this particular route is still not clear. As of now less than 35 out of the fleet of 55 buses ply in and out of the twin-city. While the MBMT boasts of operating on 33 routes, buses on around 12 routes are non-operational apparently due to shortage of buses.

"It is sad to note that the court has to spend judicial time on deciding matters such as increase in the height of the platforms in the interest of passenger safety which is a basic right of a handicapped commuter," said a
bench of justices Abhay Oka and A.S. Gadkari. The judges gave two weeks time to the railways to inform when it would provide basic facilities for the disabled commuters, including the increase in the height of platforms, reports PTI. The bench has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on a rail accident in which a teenaged girl lost her arms after a fall from a local train at Ghatkopar station. The wide gap between footboard of trains and platforms is allegedly the main cause of accidents, according
to the report. The court also directed the state government to inform its decision on a proposal sent to the state by the railways for allotment of 14 pieces of land adjoining certain railway stations to be used as helipad for airlifting patients to hospital during an emergency. In April this year, the Central Railway had written to the state government seeking permission for allotting space for helipads near important railway stations. However, it has not yet received any reply from the state.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2014 >> Apart from being a designer, Rashi is also a part-time model
Rashi Agarwal, a product designer at Holii, speaks to Yamini Walia about her association with the popular brand and her journey so far
H
olii was launched in 2009, with the aim to bring a distinct Indian aesthetic to handbags. Rashi Agarwal’s objective, as a product designer at Holii, is to create handbags and accessories that perfectly embody the modern Indian woman. Rashi graduated in Cordwainers Accessory Design from the London College of Fashion and also holds a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Before joining Holii, she interned with fam ed milliner (hat maker) Victoria Grant. Here she talks to us about her love for leather and her future plans. n Did you always aspire to work
with Holii? I wanted to work with a brand that specialised in leather handbags. My major at the London College of Fashion was in the same field, and I just wanted to peruse my passion. I applied at Holii because it is among the few brands that is always introducing something new, has 100% real leather products and moreover, is a brand with values that I can totally relate to. It seemed like the perfect fit. n How did the opportunity to work with
the label come up? After I came back to India, I sent my portfolio (including a collection of all the leather bags that I had designed) to Holii. Because of my interest in leather and specialisation in handbags, I managed to bag this amazing opportunity.
n What kind of customers do you cater to?
Holii represents the delightful chaos of modern India, and is meant for the country’s fashion conscious women. They can be anyone between the ages of 16 to 45-years-old. Holii suits women who are opinionated, liberal, selfgoverning and fiercely independent. n You interned with Victoria Grant before
joining Holii. Tell us about your experience working for her. It was lovely working with Victoria. She is one of the nicest people to work with and has so much experience to share. She is immensely creative and her designs speak volumes. I learnt a lot interning with her and will cherish the experience forever. n How would you describe the modern
Indian woman of today? The modern Indian woman is strong, confident and not afraid to show who she is. She is liberated, empowered and loves the essence of India — which is reflected in the chaos and explosion of colours — but is still modern and practical in what she chooses to wear. the world, and I want to do it all! It is interesting to explore places, irrespective of how big or small they are. n You also model part time; do you plan to
turn it into a full-time career in the near future? I love to model because it comes to me naturally and it’s fun, because you get to do something interesting and different all the time. There is so much energy involved and I get to meet several new people. But, my heart lies in designing and it will always be my main focus.
n What are your responsibilities as a
product designer at Holii? I design collections that are based on the ethos that Holii stands for, mixed with the latest trends. I am constantly researching popular trends in Indian markets. I love experimenting with different leather and metal fittings to jazz up my designs and Holii gives me complete freedom to explore this. My work does not end after designing the product. I am also involved in the manufacturing process, starting from sampling, production and campaign ideation to marketing strategies, until the bags are finally in stores. I also make sure the products are displayed well and keep track of what customers prefer. This helps us to design the next collection better.
n What do you think of the current state of
n When it comes to designing bags, where
do you draw inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration from architecture. The Holii Spring/ Summer ’14 range was inspired by Moroccan mosques and Rajasthani forts. Art movements also have a huge influence on my designs. The colours in the Summer ’14 range were inspired by pop art artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
>> Art is one of Rashi’s inspirations n What else do you love doing — what are
your hobbies? I enjoy baking and have a sweet tooth that keeps me going. I love making bags in the makeshift studio at my home in Pondicherry. Travelling is another thing I like. There is so much to see and do in
fashion in India? Do you think people are open to experimenting? To say that Indian fashion has evolved over time, would be an understatement. In the last few decades, there has been a complete turnaround in the fashion scenario and Indian designers are making a global impact. People like to experiment and are open to new trends and colours. So, we are always looking for edgy ideas for our products. We want to be new and current because people that’s what people really want. n Tell us about some of the interesting
experiences that you’ve had while working at Holii? We had our first Holii Bloggers meet this July, in Bangalore and it was a huge success. Talking to bloggers about fashion and trends over canapés and
sweets and taking selfies was such a light-hearted pleasure. We held another one in Mumbai recently and I would love to organise more of these around the country. These bloggers meets not only boost your network, but also increase your knowledge, because you get an opportunity to peep into the best brains in your domain. n Of all the collections from Holii, which
one is your favourite? It’s hard to choose one, but I think the Spring/ Summer ‘14 collection, which was my introductory collection for Holii, is my favourite. It was so exciting to see the bags that I created in stores for the very first time. n Have you had to face any hardships
while working as a designer? The hardships that I face are actually enjoyable when I look back on them! The everyday challenge of coming up with new and innovative ideas is tough and exciting at the same time. It keeps my creative juices flowing. n What are your future plans?
Holii is known for making great products and I will continue to work with Holii and see the brand grow. We have big future projects planned and I want to be where things are constantly developing, changing and growing. I want to make a meaningful contribution to the brand’s development and growth.

nAil thAt lip colour If you’re wondering what nail and lip combinations are currently in style, look no further, because Yamini Walia & Sara Shah give you the lowdown on this season’s hottest hues
M
atching your lip and nail colour isn’t as fashion forward as you think it is. Although we’re sure you won’t be able to coordinate both colours every day, staying up to date with the latest trends will help you look fashionable on a night out, at an important lunch or on vacation. It’s time to break the monotony of red on red or pastels and pinks and experiment with different nail and lip combinations. Read on to find out what shades pair well with one another.
Berry-Stained Lips + Icy Mint Nails Nothing says winter like berrystained lips. Try Bobbi Brown’s Lip Sheer in Plum (`1,670). To maintain a balance, flaunt icy mint nails with Bourjois So Laque Ultra Shine Nail enamel in Amande défilé (`470).
« celeb hit or miss: rheA dhAnbhoorA tAkes A look At WhAt our leAding lAdies Wore this Week «

The dull shoe peeking out of this dress ruins the entire look — and an updo would have suited the pretty neckline a lot better. We’re not really fans of the earrings either, they’re too long and hide the beauty of the high neckline. Her saving grace is that she hasn’t overdone her makeup.
We know Adhuna was going for a casual look and the knotted shirt and jeans combination works well. We’re not fans of the belt though and the shoes, while a style statement on their own, seem to be rubbing us the wrong way, as does her frazzled teacher-like hairstyle.
Bright Pink Lips + Holographic Glitter Nails This combination is perfect for a girly, but edgy look. Pink Oriflame More by Demi in Pink Drama (`698) for a vibrant pop of pink on your lips. Pair it with Konard’s Hologram nail art collection (`86) for the perfect set of nails, with just the right amount of silver sparkle.
Plum Puree Lips + Sky Blue Nails Plum is the new trend for autumn/ winter and we suggest you try the Revlon Super Lustrous Perfectly Plum lipstick (`550). Complement your luxuriously dark lips with the sky blue colour of this Maybelline Colorshow NailPolish in Blueberry Ice (`75).
Juicy Coral Lips + Cobalt Blue Nails There’s nothing like a pretty shade of coral on your lips to freshen up your look. Try the Maybelline Color Sensational Bold Matte Lipstick in Coral (`425). Pair it with cobalt blue nails by applying Estée Lauder’s Blue Blood nail polish (`1,650).
«
ADItI RAO HyDARI
A retro trend that rocked the runways this year was watercolour prints. Yamini Walia tells you how to wear it
Deep wine Lipstick + Indigo Nails Bring out your dark side with winecoloured lips and nails in a deep shade of indigo. Try Maybelline’s Color Sensational Jewels in Wine (`375) and Lakmé Absolute Gel Stylist nail paint (`400).
Frosted Cocoa Lips + Black Red Nails If it looks like chocolate, we want it on our lips! Revlon Overtime Lipcolor in True Chocolate (`960) is perfect for a fun look, with its rich shade of cocoa. Complement your lips with a dark and glamorous shade of deep red on your nails, such as the Maybelline Colorama nail paint, in Zarzamora (`100).
Accessorise less While wearing a beautiful watercolour print dress, you don’t want anything else to fight for attention. So, make sure that you don’t over accessorise. Keep it simple by adding a few bracelets and solid coloured pumps to your look. Be edgier You can really rock the watercolour print if you pick contrasts. If you are wearing a printed mini dress, combine it with a leather jacket for an edgy look.
Satin Nude Lips + Soft Pink Nails All you need in order to achieve a classy, elegant look is a simple nude lipstick and soft, baby pink nails. Combine Estée Lauder’s PC Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Desireable (`2,100) with the Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Ballerina Pink (`1,650), because everybody likes being pretty in pink!
Porcelain Peach + Chunky Gold, Pink Glitter Nails A pale peachy colour is all you need to achieve a minimalist look and to complete the effortless ensemble, we suggest picking a light pink nail lacquer with flecks of gold in it. Try the Coloressence Primea lipcolour in Peach Passion (`250) for your lips and apply Colorbar’s Gold Glitter nail paint (`400) over pink nail polish, for a touch of glamour.
Casual way If maxi dresses or midi dresses aren’t your style, you can still incorporate this trend in your wardrobe. You can either wear a pair of watercolour-print sneakers for a casual outing, or a T-shirt with skinny jeans in watercolour-inspired pastels or bold, digital prints. Office look Wearing bright, neon colours to work isn’t a good idea, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t wear watercolour prints to work. The key is to be subtle; so opt for a shirt or trousers in a neutrally-shaded, watercolour print.

Huma looks like she’s ready to walk the ramp in this extravagant outfit. The colour is gorgeous, but the sleeves are a little too confused — we’re not fans of the almost-sheer, patchy style. Her sideswept hair and accessories work with the look though.
The front of Zareen’s dress is pretty and fits her like a glove, but we hate the back — it looks like batwings on a skirt! Her necklace is a little too over-the-top, but we love the statement cuff on her wrist. A little lighter hand with her makeup would have made this look a winner in our books.

« just out! L’OREAL PARIS GENtLE CLEANSING MILk Cleansing milk doesn’t generally surprise me — but you’ve got to believe me when I tell you that the L’Oreal Paris Gentle Cleansing Milk really delivers on its promises. It may be due to the shea butter in the milk, but it actually makes your skin feel soft, smooth and nourished after you use it. It isn’t as effective at removing stubborn, waterproof mascara and takes a few rubs before all kohl pencil lines have disappeared properly, but it’s worth picking up for the soft, smooth skin you are left with afterwards. CLEAR ANtI-DANDRuFF MENtHOL SHAMPOO
Shoe style Watercolour prints aren’t restricted to dresses and skirts, they also work really well on your shoes. If shoes swathed in watercolour prints are too much for you, try wedges in a fun, floral print. Pick a hue from the same colour palette as the rest of your outfit, and complete your look with a few simple bangles.
Radiant Mauve + Shimmering Emerald If you’re looking for something natural, then mauve should be your go-to colour. It enhances your natural lip colour and looks natural on most Indian skin tones. Try L’Oreal Paris Rouge Caress Mauve (`499) with Estée Lauder’s Viper Green (`1,650) for some drama, and you’re good to go.
«
HuMA quRESHI
As a look, this works alright because Aditi looks pretty. However, we’re not big fans of the outfit itself — all the different colours and textures make it a little too chaotic for our taste, especially with the embroidered tube adding more to it. Lighter accessories may have helped the outfit stand out more.
« five WAYs to rock WAtercolour prints
Bright Orange Lip + Lavender Nails Try this Fran Wilson Moodmatcher lipstick in orange (`590) to add a fun, spunky edge to your look. Also, remember that subtlety is key when it comes to lip and nail combinations. So, match this with the Colorbar Exclusive Nailpaint in Lavender (`175).

Clear’s new anti-dandruff shampoo promises exactly what every other shampoo in its category does — no dandruff and a cool scalp. On both these counts, the shampoo delivers. It’s possible that of all the shampoos that I’ve tried, Clear suited my hair best, but regardless of that, the effects of this shampoo are unmatchable when compared to other shampoos. It delivers on its promise of no dandruff, but then that is something that most other shampoos do quite well too. However, what set this menthol shampoo apart from the rest was that it kept my hair oil-free without making it too dry and also ensured that it stayed light, making it easier to style my hair. The menthol is a good addition, especially for weather like ours, as it leaves you with a cool scalp. The effect sadly, lasts merely 5-10 minutes, which is where this otherwise good shampoo loses points. Where Beauty and general stores across the city Price `249 for 400ml Rating ****

hether it’s because you’re unbelievingly good at your job (which means that you will get promoted faster) or because you’re moving to a new company at a higher designation, sooner or later, you’re going to face a situation where you have to supervise an employee who is much older than you are. For some of you, it might be a scary situation, while others might not think much about it. But, you’re still going to have to find a way to manage your team effectively and continue to excel at what you do. After all, your team’s performance reflects on your skills as a leader. Read on to find out how to ensure that it’s a smooth ride.
don’t PResume One of the biggest mistakes you can make while dealing with older employees, is to assume things about their work ethic or personality, whether these beliefs are positive or negative. For example, you might think that since they are older, they don’t need any training, or assume that they will be slow workers. Remember that everyone is different, no matter how old they are. So, having generalised assumptions about them will only prevent you from getting to know your employees better.
KnoW moRe than they do You’re in your first meeting with your new team. One of your older employees asks you a question in a matter-of-fact tone. However, your expression is blank, because you don’t know how to answer. That sounds scary, right? Well, things like this usually only occur on film, but if you aren’t well prepared for your new job, they could happen to you as well. And, if they do, it might lower your confidence. So, ensure that you have thorough knowledge of your new assignment. In fact, you can even enlist older employees to find out more about the basics.
be a Patient boss Being impatient with your employees can sometimes help your team work faster. However, when there’s a generation gap amongst members of your team (including yourself), this could backfire. You don’t want to be labelled just another impatient member of the ‘new’ generation — and no, just because you’re the boss, they’re not going to

old, not
>> Dealing with older employees that are working under you, can be tricky
gold A rising career graph means that somewhere along the line you might have to manage employees who are older than you. Dev Goswami brings you a few tips to ensure that you don’t crash and burn
stop thinking that. So, for the first few weeks, be a little lenient and give them time to adjust to your management methods. However, make sure that you are clear about the fact that, sooner or later, they are going to have to adapt to your techniques.
use them as mentoRs Just because they haven’t made it to higher designations, doesn’t mean that your older employees are useless. If they also have a lot of experience at their current job, one of the
best ways to use their experience is to ask them to mentor trainees, interns and new employees. But, ensure that you also give them regular work (which you think they can manage), so that they don’t feel like you’re side-lining them. Also remember that this is a great way to get started on your path to building a great team.
no sPeCial attention Apart from what we have just mentioned above, you do not need to treat older
employees any differently from the rest of your team. In a worst case scenario, when you’re dealing with an egoistical employee, giving them special attention will only validate their heightened sense of self-worth. On the other hand, if you’re blessed with a diligent, older employee, they may be offended that you’re treating them differently. So, if they step out of line or make a mistake, do exactly what you’d do with another employee — whether it’s shouting at them or sending them a crisp email showing your displeasure.
« career advice What to do When you have ReCeived a bad ReCommendation letteR I recently quit my job and asked my former boss for a recommendation letter. He gave me a decent one, highlighting my work ethic and creativity. However, there are a couple of points about my people skills and my ability to work in a team that are very negative. I am not being fussy, but I disagree with what he said. I didn’t share a particularly warm relationship with him and that may be the reason for his opinion. But, I am worried that his remarks will affect my future career prospects. I don’t think he’ll change what he has said in the letter. What should I do? — aarzoo shaikh, dadar dear aarzoo, You’re right to assume that your
former boss won’t change the remarks in his recommendation letter. The best way forward for you is to consider these as his personal views. As far as your job interviews are concerned, you need to think of how you can explain his remarks. However, refrain from saying that it was because he didn’t like you — it’s not very believable and you will seem like you’re justifying yourself or making excuses. Think hard — there has to be a reason for what he has said. Maybe there were a few episodes that he felt strongly about, no matter how minor they seem to you. Once you can figure out why he might have written the negative remarks, it will become easier for you to explain them at your interviews.

BETTER BABYMOONS
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2014
Forget secret honeymoon escapes and romantic getaways — the new travel trend is to pack your bags and head off on a babymoon! Yes, you read that right. Rhea Dhanbhoora gives you the lowdown
H
aving a baby is exciting, so we’re sure that from the very first time you glanced at that positive pregnancy test, you’ve been counting down the days till you and your partner can welcome your little bundle of joy. However, if this is your first child, you’re also probably aware that your lives are going to change forever. You’ve been on your romantic honeymoon together, but every vacation you take from here on out is mostly going to be with your child in tow. While that has a little magic of its own, it also means that for a pretty long time, you’re not going to be alone. Enter the babymoon — pop culture’s new way of giving expectant mothers their last chance to relax and rejuvenate in their own (well, and their partner’s) company. Everyone from Kate Hudson to Kate Middleton is doing it — so it’s probably time you hopped on the bandwagon!
>> A babymoon can be a memorable and relaxing break before the responsibilities of being a parent set in
« Top 5:
TreaTs To make wiTh your children
We’re sure that you do all you can to ensure that your children have something to look forward to all year round, but make tomorrow extra special by rustling up these special treats with them this Children’s Day, says Shirley Mistry
WhaT On EarTh IS IT? We know it sounds like a strange distortion of the uber romantic honeymoon, and you’re half right there. It’s a period when both parents can have a nice, pleasant vacation before their baby is born. The trend is helping parents to relax, while the travel and tourism industry gets a boost, with attractive ‘maternal’ packages and couple specials.
CInnaMOn SUgar pOpCOrn
Give this classic treat a twist by sprinkling some cinnamon sugar over it. Simply pop corn kernels in your microwave, drizzle them with 2tsp of butter and sprinkle cinnamon and caster sugar over it in a 1:2 ratio. Toss them well to coat them completely and you are done. Because this recipe involves minimal cooking, it is perfect to make with your children.
gET IT rIghT If you’re thinking of heading off on a babymoon, here are a few tips: n Check with your doctor: Make sure ask your doctor if you are fit to travel and keep him/ her informed of your every move, so that you can make an informed and safe decision for your vacation. n pick something up your alley: This is not the time to compromise. Pick a place and a situation where you will be as comfortable as possible. Know your limits and don’t go overboard! n Stay cool and hydrated: Avoid visiting areas of low humidity and remember to stay hydrated when you’re on an airplane. Make sure you carry safe, bottled water wherever you go and keep yourself cool through your vacation. n Travel during your second trimester: You’ve just gotten past the nausea and migraines of the first trimester and you’re a while away from all the heaviness of your third trimester. Your second trimester is when you will be the most comfortable and the most well suited to travel. n Stay circulated: Avoid sitting for long hours, but don’t walk too much either. Don’t stress yourself out at all. This vacation is the best time to be selfish — and comfortable! n Make sure that you eat well: Your baby needs to be fed! So, don’t go hours without eating and make sure that wherever you are, you eat food that is safe to consume — and of course, food that suits your pregnancy cravings!

their babymoons, but unless you can really afford to spend lavishly, be conservative. Children can be pretty expensive! Book your seats on a comfy and reliable airline. You don’t want to be bumping around like you’re on a bullock cart, suffering through turbulence or cramped up in tiny seats. Chart out a map with the closest medical shops, the nearest hospital and the best doctor near your holiday destination. It’s a good idea to find out exactly where to head if you need to during your stay. While this isn’t normally a consideration, when you’re pregnant, pick a hotel that has few stairs, easy areas to walk through and pick rooms nearest to the exit — just in case! Make sure the region you are visiting is free from epidemics and health concerns. Visit a safe, hygienic place where you can be sure you will not fall ill. Make sure you tell people at the airport that you’re pregnant. Some X-ray scanners are best avoided, as are metal detectors.
If you’ve missed out on your babymoon because you’ve recently given birth — don’t worry! There’s another type of babymoon that couples take — just after their baby is born. You will have to find a child friendly destination to visit, but it’s a great experience to be able to take a vacation as a family and enjoy some time with your newborn before all the responsibility of having a child sets in.
pITa pOCkETS
Slice warmed pita pockets equally and let your children stuff them with filling of their choice. They can pick from cheese, vegetables, chicken nuggets, olives and sauces of their choice. Because this recipe requires no cooking at all, you can stand by and watch your children whip up their own, special afterschool snack.
MOzzarElla MOrSElS
Slice up fresh mozzarella cheese into bitesized pieces. Beat an egg in a bowl and, in another plate, pour out some breadcrumbs and season with salt, pepper and chilli flakes. Get your children to coat each mozzarella piece with egg and then with breadcrumbs. Refrigerate them for 30 minutes before baking them at 180°C until they are golden and crispy on the outside.
ChOCOlaTE FOnDUE
While this is definitely the unhealthiest item on this list, it’s called a treat for a reason. Melt some semi-sweet chocolate and place it in a bowl. film misconceptions W We love romantic comedies or rom-coms, as they are more fondly called, but they do give you some unrealistic expectations about love. Shirley Mistry runs you through the list
ho doesn’t like a good romantic comedy? It leaves you thoroughly entertained, and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. After all, what’s not to love about two people who beat all odds to end up together? But, here’s the flip-side — your life may not turn out the way your favourite rom-com did, and that can be rather disappointing. Take a look at some unrealistic expectations that romcoms have given us about love and relationships, and remember to take off your rose-tinted glasses when you examine your own relationships, so that the idea of reel romance doesn’t take over reality, leaving you with a sack full of disappointments.

There was a big art and craft exhibition in my school. Everyone was very excited because this year prizes were being awarded. I am quite good at art and put in a lot of effort this time, because I wanted to win! The deadline was extended because several students hadn’t finished their work. But, mine was ready. No one else had made anything like my piece. Then, two days before the entries...

AwkwArD iS cute No, it isn’t. Remember Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel’s first date in Life As We Know It? While it was nothing short of a disaster, they soon fell in love. Unfortunately, you’re rarely going to be this lucky in real life. Awkward dates aren’t adorable, and they usually entail a lot of fumbling and prolonged silence — until you can go home and erase the entire event from your mind. In all likelihood, you aren’t going to have the courage to go on a second date and there is nothing endearing about the experience.
the roMANtic GeSture In Friends with Benefits, Justin Timberlake organises a flash mob at Grand Central Station for Mila Kunis, just to let her know that he is in love with her. In reality, not only are such grand gestures of love ridiculously expensive, they are extremely far fetched and next to impossible to pull off. Besides, we genuinely think that it’s the smaller things that count and personally, a nice, romantic dinner would make us happier.

DeStiNeD for love In films such as Friends with Benefits or No Strings Attached, what starts of as a casual, physical relationship, with no emotional attachment, always spirals into hopeless love. But, remember that in the real world, such relationships involve people with commitment issues, who are just looking to kill time until something more exciting comes their way. They never have an epiphany about feeling head-over-heels for you and are sticking to the brief of a casual relationship, without venturing into ‘true love’ territory. So, should you choose to be part of such a relationship yourself, make sure that you don’t fall head-over-heels in love with your partner, and then expect him to flip you a stack of pancakes every Sunday morning.

In such a situation, you will have to put his interests before your own and attend a few of these parties with him. Every marriage requires some sort of compromise from both partners, for it to be successful. Remember that the parties might be important for his professional life, so it’s time for you to adjust a little and think about your husband’s interests. On the day of the exhibition, I was so excited that I forgot to take my candle to school. My mother brought it during break and I rushed it to go and put it inside my painted vase. But then, I head all the girls crowding around Shaheen and congratulating her...
What a great idea!
And you did it in two days?!
Thanks! I was too late. The judges had already been to see our year and Shaheen had won. I didn’t even think she would enter...
Very sadly, I went to see her winning entry... and there right next to mine, was a vase, painted with flowers and inside a candle that made the pattern dance all over the walls and even on my own case, adorned with the 1st prize ribbon.
Shaheen copied my idea and won! It did look very pretty and was slightly different from mine, but she stole my idea! “I feel so bad. She doesn’t sound like a bad girl, just someone with weak ethics. A lot of people don’t see ideas as belonging to the people who thought of them, unfortunately. c) Move on! AY PYI TAW: Asserting that India and ASEAN have "no irritants" in their ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday invited the 10-nation bloc to be part of his country's "new" economic journey even as his strong "Make in India" pitch got the support of the grouping. The prime minister in his interaction in Hindi at the round table said that a "new era" of economic development, industrialisation and trade has begun in India and and that the rapidly developing country and ASEAN can be "great partners" for each other. Noting that India's 'Look East' policy has become 'Act East' policy, Modi assured the ASEAN leaders that he will give his "sustained personal" attention to India's relations with the regional bloc. "We have embarked on a new economic journey in India, we invite you to this new environment in India," the prime minister said. ASEAN plans to become one economic community by the end of next year. At the same time, Modi said the potential for India-ASEAN ties is much higher than where they are at the moment. Presently, India-ASEAN trade is around USD 76 billion which is just three per cent of total ASEAN trade. They have set a target of USD 100 billion for bilateral trade by 2015. Modi noted that both India and ASEAN are keen to enhance their cooperation in advancing balance, peace and stability in the region. "My government has been in office for six months and the intensity and momentum with which we have enhanced our engagement in the East, is a reflection of the priority that we give to this region," the prime minister said at the summit held at the sprawling Myanmar International Convention Centre on the second day of his 10-day threenation tour of Myanmar, Australia Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah (L) during the and Fiji. 12th India-ASEAN Summit at Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar on Wednesday. Court orders CBI for further probe against ex-Coal Secy N
EW DELHI: The acts of former Coal Secretary H C Gupta and two other government officials overlooking the misrepresentation by Navbharat Power Pvt Ltd (NPPL) for getting coal block prima facie amounts to criminal misconduct, a special court yesterday said directing the CBI to further investigate the case. The court differed from the investigating officer's conclusion that no malafide intention was found on the part of government officials, saying it was prima facie clear that the decision of allocating coal block to NPPL was taken by the Ministry of Coal (MOC) officers and the Screening Committee without keeping public interest in mind. "...I am of the considered opinion that the acts of MOC officers i.e. H C Gupta, Secretary MOC/Chairman, Screening Committee, K S Kropha, the then Joint Secretary, MOC/ Member Secretary, Screening Committee and K C Samaria, the then Director, MOC, prima facie falls within the four corners of the offence of criminal misconduct as defined in Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act," the judge said. Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar, who kept pending final reports filed by the agency, ordered further probe in the case and directed it to file progress report on December 16. This is the second time that the court has ordered further investigation in the case. Earlier, the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate had refused to take cognizance of CBI's charge sheet against NPPL and its two officials and had directed the agency to further probe. The court deferred the issue of
cognizance against the private parties involved in the case till the report of further investigation is received. "Thus in view of my aforesaid discussion it is clear that but for the acts of omission or commission committed by the officers of Ministry of Coal or that of Screening Committee, M/s NPPL would not have succeeded in getting allotment of the impugned coal block in their favour on the basis of the misrepresentation made by them initially in their application form and subsequently at the time of making presentation before the Screening Committee or in the feed back form filled by them," the judge said. The acts of omission of the public servants involved does not appear to be "inadvertent", the court said. CBI had filed a charge sheet against NPPL, its Managing Direc-
tor and Vice-Chairman Harish Chandra Prasad and Chairman P Trivikrama Prasad and a supplementary final report in which it said that no offence was found to have been committed by the public servants. The Supreme Court-appointed special public prosecutor R S Cheema, however, had differed with the CBI on giving clean chit to Gupta, Kropha and Samaria, saying they had "illegally allocated" the coal block to the firm. The charge sheet was filed against NPPL and its officials for offences under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 420 (cheating) of IPC for allegedly misrepresenting facts, including inflated net worth, to acquire coal block in Rampia in Odisha. While Gupta has retired, Kropha and Samaria are still in service and prior sanction is required to prosecute them.

ways or i-ways. Besides having an interaction with the ASEAN leaders at the Round Table, Modi also met them for separate bilateral meetings during which his "Make in India" campaign found resonance. "I fully agree and admire the concept of the 'Make in India' campaign. It can drive the economy. Thailand can apply it for its economy too," Modi's Twitter handle quoted the Thai Premier Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has having told him. The campaign also figured during Modi's interaction with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak. "I am giving lot of emphasis to Make in India and want to invite Malaysian companies to come to India. There are lot of opportunities," Modi tweeted after the meeting. At another meeting, Singapore Premier Lee Hsien Loong told Modi that there is lot of goodwill for India in the ASEAN. ASEAN comprises 10 countries Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Pak court refuses to hold 26/11 attacks trial by video-link
L
AHORE: A Pakistani anti-terrorism court yesterday dismissed a plea to conduct the trial of seven accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case including LeT operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi through videolink and asked authorities to ensure security for the witnesses and others. Anti-Terrorism court Judge of Islamabad, Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi, dismissed the prosecution's plea to allow the witnesses to submit their recorded statements in the court because of security reasons. "The court dismissed the prosecutions plea and ordered that the case hearing will continue to be held at the Adiala Jail at Rawalpindi and security be ensured for the witnesses and others," the court sources told PTI. Earlier before his transfer, Judge Attiquer Rehman had stopped holding the trial at Adiala Jail following "poor security arrangements" a few months ago. "Owing to the security issues we request the court hold the trial through a video-link for their and witnesses security," the prosecution lawyers pleaded. The defence lawyers had argued against the prosecution's plea saying "This is a sensitive and in-camera trial. The court proceedings will be accessi-
ble to many if it is allowed to be held through a video-link. How can the court trust witnesses statements in a CD form?" "It can easily be tampered with and in no way will be admissible in the court. Therefore, the court should reject the prosecution's plea," they said. Two witnesses - one from Federal Investigation Agency and other from foreign ministry - also appeared in the court, the sources said. Foreign ministry official told the court about receiving the transcript of Ajmal Kasab statement from India and its submission to the FIA. The FIA official confirmed the receiving of the transcript. Earlier, the prosecutors had drawn the court's attention towards threats they received allegedly from the Jamaat-udDawah activists. The judge adjourned the hearing till November 19. Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, AbdulWajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Anjum have been charged with planning, financing and executing the attacks in India's financial capital that killed 166 people in November, 2008.

One of our national challenges is that 15% odd share of manufacturing today has to be increased to 25%. But that’s an uphill task and therefore that leaves us essentially with the services sector whose growth is a low hanging fruit in India...Services sector is an area where there is huge space to grow and the country has potential to grow. I have a lurking suspicion that the services sector would occupy about 60% of the GDP space... This is one sector where governmental interference is minimal.

In a letter to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who holds the G20’s rotating presidency, sent on November 6, but only made public yesterday the pope said world powers “must not forget that many lives are at stake behind these political and technical discussions.

Minority Shareholders Oppose NSEL Merger With FT
Some minority shareholders of Financial Technologies have raised objections to the proposed merger of scam-hit National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) with the company. To ensure faster recovery of dues for entities hit by the Rs 5,600 cr fraud at NSEL, the government last month ordered the merger of the bourse with its parent firm Financial Technologies (India) Ltd (FTIL). This is also the first time that the Corporate Affairs Ministry ordered a forced merger of private entities using a provision in the Companies Act that allows the government to intervene for “essential public interest”. PTI quoting sources said the ministry has received objections from some minority shareholders on the proposed amalgamation. Specific details were not immediately available. The proposal would have a final shape after taking into account submissions or objections made by the shareholders and creditors of the two companies. rowth for Indian pharmaceutical companies is likely to get a boost as countries are increasingly focusing on affordable health care. However, failure to comply with the stringent quality requirements in developed markets is a key risk. That's according to a report titled "Indian Pharmaceutical Companies Have A Global Opportunity, If They Conquer Compliance Issues," that Standard & Poor's Ratings Services published yesterday. "Expansion into developed markets, especially the U.S., is positive for the credit profiles of Indian pharmaceutical companies. The market's size and the absence of

he Government should give discounts to retail investors when it lists state-owned entities like the Airports Authority of India and helicopter operator Pawan Hans, BSE chief Ashish Chauhan said. The move will help increase participation of retail investors, providing momentum to the primary market. "The government should give discount to retail investors whenever it comes out with the IPOs of companies like AAI and Pawan Hans," Chauhan told PTI. Apart from that, he said government should also give discount to retail investors in the OFS (Offer for Sale) and follow-on public offer (FPO) of state-owned companies. Most of the companies give a discount of up to 5 % on the final offer price to this group of investors. As IPOs come via the book building process, 35 % of the net offer is reserved for qualified institutional buyers (QIBs). Further, up to 15 % is meant for High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) or corporates who bid for more than Rs 2 lakh. The rest, 50 %, is reserved for retail or individual investors who invest up to Rs 2 lakh. Proposals for listing of AAI and Pawan Hans have been made in the Draft Civil Aviation Policy. Besides, government is planning to divest 10 % of its stake in Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. It has already filed draft papers with the market regulator Sebi for the public offer.
price controls are likely to support the revenue growth and profitability," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Vishal Kulkarni. The growth prospects are particularly high for Indian companies in the specialty and complex generic drugs segment in the U.S. Most of these companies have a limited presence in this segment, but S&P expects them to gradually move up the value chain. Compliance with regulations is a key requirement for Indian pharmaceutical companies to realize their growth potential, the report notes. Failure on this front would seriously hurt creditworthiness. It could lead to disruptions in production, import bans, remediation costs, and--above all--reputational and litigation risks. The largest 10 Indian pharmaceutical companies are much smaller in terms of revenue than their global generics peers. "What the Indian companies lack in size is largely offset by their strong product pipeline, presence in emerging markets, and conservatively maintained financial health," says Kulkarni. Indian companies' focus on research and development (R&D) will
continue to help them build a sustainable product pipeline, in our view. Standard & Poor's expects the role of Indian companies in mergers and acquisitions in the global pharmaceutical market to be moderate to marginal. Their acquisitions are likely to be measured against the backdrop of elevated valuations, longer integration periods, problems with operational synergies, and the managerial bandwidth required to reap benefits from such acquisitions. "We believe many Indian companies have the financial capacity to make modest acquisitions. However, they have strong scope to grow business organically, minimizing the need to aggressively add size through acquisitions," said Kulkarni. S&P believes Indian pharmaceutical companies will find it difficult to improve profitability as they look to expand, although they should still maintain healthy EBITDA margins of 20%-30%. A drop in formulations coming off-patent over the next three to four years and increasing competition could limit margin gains. Increasing spending on R&D, regulatory compliance, and legal costs will also dent margins.

She also worked in 'Naaginn' and 'Adaalat'. She has participated in the sixth season of 'Bigg Boss', Later in 2013, she appeared as Satyavati in the hit television series Mahabharat (2013 TV series). Her latest assignment was in the reality show ‘Dare To Dance’ And now she is enjoying popularity in the mythological show ‘Sinhasan Battisi’ produced by Dheeraj Kumar and beamed on Sony Pal. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the vivacious Sayantani about her iconic show.
‘Sinhasan Battisi’!
Sayantani plays Mahamaya in
What is the narrative of the show ‘Sinhasan Battisi’? 'Sinhasan Battisi' is a historical fantasy project having 32 beautiful females as 32 'putliyan' which are embodied in the throne and becomes alive one by one. The main protagonist of the serial referred as the main 'putli' who shall also be the anchor of the series. Through this series these 32 women shall emphasise upon the importance of womanhood as a woman of substance who has qualities of love, sacrifice, devotion, dedication, emotions, forgiveness, intelligience, morality, impartiality, acquaintance, good-deeds, acceptability, virtuous etc. All these qualities of a woman shall be the essence of the series which will connect our women viewers. Story of 'Sinhasan
Priyanka, Vipul, Gaurav win ‘Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale’
T
alented trio Priyanka, Vipul and Gaurav has won India's first ever multi-city dance tour 'Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale'. The Mumbai-based dancers won the title of 'happy dancers' after beating 10 contestants at the grand finale judged by 'Happy New Year' team Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Farah Khan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah. "We are extremely happy as it is a dream come true for us to perform in front of such big stars. The feeling is yet to sink in. It gives us immense joy that we were able to spread happiness and smile with our dancing," Priyanka told PTI after winning the Zee TV show. The trio won a trophy, Rs 10 lakh along with a high end car. Priyanka, Vipul and Gaurav met each other during the audition of a reality show, which they did not get through. "We met each other during an audition and became friends. We also performed together many a times and for this show we decided to participate together," she said. Priyanka said that her most memorable moment on the show was when Farah called her an 'inspiration'. "I have got many memorable moments but I would never forget when Deepika told me that I could do 'Lovely' better than her and Farah ma'am called me an inspiration for all the actresses," she said. PTI
Battisi' will be told through these 32 women. In a lighter way, if we say “woman shall be the engine of this historical fantasy”.
What is your role in the show? 'Sinhasan Battisi' is the tale of King Vikramaditya's (Karan Suchak) grit and valour. And the story is narrated to Raja Bhoj (Siddharth Arora) by Mahamaya Pari, played by me, one of the main angels guarding the throne of Vikramaditya. I'm the lady Krishna in Raja Bhoj's life. I explain the relevance of 32 qualities of the Sinhasan to him and help him attain the throne. The best part of the show
is that the story telling is not done in a serious manner..
How did you prepare for your role? From hair to make-up and costumes, it takes me a couple of hours to get the look. I think I can pull off such characters easily because I look Indian. Also, my knowledge of dance has helped me as there is a certain rhythm in the character's body language.
How was it like working on the show? Of course, the production house is a premier one; Creative Eye headed by Dheeraj Kumar and my co-actors on the show Siddharth Arora, Cheshta Mehta, Navina Bole and Aditi Sajwan are a great bunch and it’s great to shoot with them. Why do you think the show has clicked in such a big way? These stories are an integral part of India and the fact that people are appreciating the show validates that they are open to learning about our culture.
Does the fact that such a show was telecast on Doordarshan earlier will make a difference to the visibility of the show? Not at all. Ours is a much high budgeted show with high production values and a huge canvas and the Doordarshan show no doubt was popular but that was a long time ago.
What about films? I have done a song in Sajid Khan’s ‘Himmatwala’ which was appreciated and have also done a few Bengali films. Sayantani is no doubt a face to watch out for in the future!
I am highly critical about myself: Harshad Chopra N
EW DELHI: Actor Harshad Chopra, who is currently seen on TV show 'Humsafars', says he is very critical about his work and is never satisfied with himself. Though Harshad is said to be one of the most popular actors on the small screen, the 31-year-old star always finds faults in his performances. "I rarely like my own work and am critical about my performances. I am not satisfied with my work. Whenever I watch my shows, I feel I could have done better in so many scenes. In fact when I see 'Humsafars', I feel I lack consistency right now. There are scenes where I am good and then there are moments where I am not completely into the scene.
I judge myself a lot," Harshad told PTI. The actor says he feels lucky to be a part of 'Humsafars', which airs on Sony, as his character in the show is well-etched and hopes to do justice to it. "I am hoping after a few
episodes I will be totally into the groove like it happens with other actors. It is the initial period so there is some inconsistency," he said. Harshad, who has made comeback on TV after two years with the romantic drama, feels nervous about audiences reaction as he has prepared a lot for the role. "When you work hard, you are more nervous because you know this is the best I can do, this is my best attempt. So, I am feeling anxious. I have worked a lot on my voice modulation for the character because I wanted it to be perfect. In my previous shows, I have had flaws in voice modulation but this time I wanted it to be right," the 'Saubhagyavati Bhava' star said.
TV TATTLE Supernatural’s special 200th episode
Supernatural is sending a love letter out to all its loyal fans over the years with its special 200th episode. Fan Fictionthe 200th episode of Supernatural is a fantastic musical comedy dedicated to the amazing cast over the years. The milestone episode would have an amazing blend of Supernatural’s typical element with humour and music. Sam and Dean investigate a teacher gone missing and discover that the school is putting on a musical based on their lives. The musical would represent Sam and Dean’s character in different and unimaginative ways. The play would cover minute details of the lives of the Winchester brothers and retell their story. The show currently on its season 10 is the winner of People’s Choice Award in Favourite TV Bromance category in 2014. Tune in to watch this amazing adaptation and tribute to Supernatural’s fans on Saturday, Nov 15th at 10 pm only on AXN India.
Shamata’s lucky Mondays
The lead actress of 'Everest', Shamata Anchan is on seventh heaven as her debut is being much appreciated and acknowledged by the audience. But as happy and giggly she seems to be now after the show is on air, she was just as nervous and superstitious during the making of the show. For some people it is a particular colour and for some a particular number but Shamata a.k.a. Anjali Singh Rawat from 'Everest' has a special affinity towards a particular day of the week – Monday. Shamata Anchan says, “Yes it is weirdly true that I believe Monday is lucky for me as I got a call to audition for Everest on a Monday, I went for the audition on a Monday. The day I was chosen for the show was a Monday and I also started shooting for the show on my lucky day. I also fast on Mondays so I guess it is a special day for me.”

opular TV actor Karan Tacker says he would prefer doing a show like '24' next rather than a daily soap as he feels miniseries are more interesting and creatively satisfying for artistes. Karan, who is known for his role in TV serial 'Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai', thinks small screen is going through a transition. "I want to do something like '24'. It is interesting to be a part of such a show as there is a definite end; it is almost like reading a book. As an actor you are clear as to what you have to do in such a show. There is a certain graph and it becomes a more involved process whereas in a daily soap,
story changes every day. It becomes slow as the time passes. "There are Pakistani shows on TV which are just 20-30 episodes long, making them more interesting. I feel TV is undergoing a change.” Karan told PTI. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old actor is geared up for the second season of TV show 'Halla Bol', which showcases stories inspired by various real life instances and celebrates the victories of women on Bindaas channel "It was an obvious choice for me to be back with second season. This time we are showing stories of women taking up careers believed to be dominated by men.

OLKATA: Unchallenged by Sri Lanka so far, India would look to keep the foot on the pedal in their pursuit for a series whitewash when the two teams face off in the fourth and penultimate cricket Onedayer at Eden Gardens here today. Sri Lankan have added some sting to their attack by bringing back spinner Ajantha Mendis and have sought to shore up the batting line-up by calling Lahiru Thrimanne and Dinesh Chandimal for the remaining two matches. The addition of these players may be too late for the visitors as India have already taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in fiveODI series, but at least they have shown the will to fight so that they can salvage some pride. India have tested their bench strength in the absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and have further re-arranged
Ruthless India aim to continue winning streak
their squad by bringing in Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa in place of Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja for the final two inconsequential ODIs. There has been a debate over who would partner the left-handed Dhawan in the World Cup with Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane vying for the opening slot. Sharma has returned to action after a two-month injury layoff with a match-winning 142 for India A in the preparatory match against the visitors, and the Mumbaikar will look to impress the think-tank at the top of the order. Dhawan has been the chief architect of India's three comprehensive wins as the leading run-getter of the
series with 283 runs at an average of 94.33. The selectors have opted to rest the left-hander. Apart from Sharma, explosive batsman and parttime wicketkeeper Uthappa would return to the fold and it would be interesting to see how the re-jigged batting order fares against a spicedup Lankan attack with mystery spinner Mendis back in the side. Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews had hit out at his batsmen for showing lack of intensity. The Islanders now seemed to be showing some
urgency by withdrawing the under-fire Kumar Sangakkara along with Upul Tharanga, Dhammika Prasad and Suraj Randiv. The wake-up call might have come a bit late as they have already surrendered the
K
OLKATA: Sri Lanka might have surrendered the five-match ODI series against India in the third game itself but former captain Mahela Jayawardene today said that there was nothing to worry about their World Cup preparation as things are on track. "When you go into a big tournament you have to have that hunger to win. In our camp we have that. Our guys tend to rise when it matters. As long as the focus and intent is there I think we'll get very far," Jayawardene told reporters on the eve of their penultimate ODI of the series at Eden Gardens. "This is the build up, yes we would have few hiccups and not a concern. Things are right on track." "I think we have the knack of rising to the occasion in big tournaments and stand up to the pressure. Not just me if you see how Lasith (Malinga) and Nuwan Kulasekara bowled those last four five overs," he said referring to their World T20 final win against India in
Bangladesh. The senior pro further recalled their successive runners-up finishes in the World Cup. "No one gave us an opportunity to come out of that group in 2007 in the West Indies. In the end, India went out and we went all the way. Yes we're one of the favourites in the last edition because of the home conditions but we handled the pressure and reached the final." Jayawardene further said they have been very successful this time and claimed their winning percentage was about 80 per cent.
Mendis, the Lankans also have brought back Thirimanne and Chandimal who have had a decent outings against the West Indies A recently. Thirimanne hit three fifties in four innings during that tour, while Chandimal hit two half-centuries in his four outings. The duo is expected to add some much-needed firepower to the batting. Jayawardene has been their batsman in form, hitting an elegant 118 off 124 balls as he fell short of partners in the middle to be bundled out for 242 in Hyderabad. Missing out on a second hundred in the tour, Dhawan got out for 91, while skipper Kohli scored a fluent halfcentury in India's six-wicket win in their last match in Hyderabad. In bowling, India pacer Umesh Yadav is relishing the challenge of being the pace spearhead in absence of Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, having taken the highest number of wickets so far with eight scalps from the three matches.

K
OLKATA: An unassailable lead has been achieved against Sri Lanka but Indian skipper Virat Kohli today said his team would not let the intensity slip in the remaining two ODIs of the five-match series. Having already pocketed the series with a 3-0 rout, Kohli said they would continue to be ruthless in order to make it a habit ahead of the World Cup next year. The Indians will square off against the islanders in the fourth ODI today. "Especially knowing that the World Cup is around, we want to create good habits, can't afford to be complacent at any point of time. It's going to be the same kind of effort and intensity from everyone on the field. That's something we are looking to create as a culture for the team going into big tournaments coming in future," Kohli said in the pre-match press conference. "It's not difficult to motivate anyone. Our motive at the beginning was to be ruthless and try to win every game. We are just working towards that," he added. With regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni yet to re-

Terming it a massive moment, Kohli said: "I'm really excited to lead in Australia that too in my first Test... I've some plans in mind. The focus would be to win the Test and not just focus on individual goals.
ROHIT CAN BE THE XFACTOR IN WORLD CUP A fit-again Rohit Sharma may have been in and out of the team during his seven-yearlong career so far but Indian skipper Virat Kohli said that the talented Mumbai batsman can be the X-factor in the 2015 World Cup in Australia. Rohit was forced to pull out in the middle of the English tour in August after sustaining a finger injury but the
Mumbaikar has bounced back with a match-winning 111-ball 142 against the Lankans in the tour match. Kohli said that the opener will get his preferred slot. "If a player like him gets going he can be the X-factor in a tournament like the World Cup. When he gets going, he can bring those big runs and wins the match for you. His value for the team is massive it's get to have him back. Most probably he would bat where he had batted in the past. It's all about giving him confidence as much as we can before going into the World Cup. These two games and the tri-series in Australia will certainly help him get into his groove at the top of the order. We will be looking at giving him as many overs to bat as possible," Kohli told reporters on the eve of the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka. Talking about Rohit's 141 in the comeback match after a two-month injury layoff, Kohli said: "The good thing about him is he doesn't really change himself or his game after getting success or failures. That's one of his biggest strengths.

The tie lasted four hour hours before the Slovokian prevailed at 6-4, 76 (10-8). The lass from Goa, whose world ranking is 530, looked on the verge of elimination, when she was down 2-5 in the second set, after losing the first set. But she turned on the heat thereafter. She broke Tadeja’s serve twice and then held on to her own to take set on tie-breaker. The tie-breaker proved to be nailbiting affair before Natasha clinched it at 10-8. UALA LUMPUR (MALAYSIA): The International Boxing Association is threatening strict action against L Sarita Devi despite her unconditional apology for refusing to accept her medal at the Asian Games but the veteran boxer said she remains hopeful of her suspension being revoked. That apology seems to have made no difference to the world body, whose President Ching-Kuo Wu said that AIBA is set to act tough on her when its disciplinary committee meets today in Jeju Islands, Korea to decide

ENGALURU: Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani said that anyone among Jaiveer Dhingra, Aditya Agarwal and Dhvaj Haria has the potential to replace him in future but advised the young guns to emerge as champions and winners in order to rise and shine. "Between Jaiveer, Aditya and Dhvaj, we will definitely find a champion, but it all depends who comes out as a champion and as a winner. Any one can take my place in future. They are future of India. Sometimes you have the ability but don't have the quality to win," Advani told PTI in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the unveiling of world's first-ever vegan discount card, PETA's V-Card, here. However, Advani said he had not thought of replacing anybody when he played his debut World Cup event in 2003. "When I began and played for the first time in a world cup event in 2003, I never thought I was replacing somebody - yes Geet Sethi was there. He is still one of the best cue sports players we have produced. It is all about taking the quality of the game higher and higher, which matters," he said. "If you accept being the winner, you have to accept being the loser. If everyone behaved like that, what type of competition will we have?", he said. Boxing India had been hoping that an apology would ensure a light punishment for the boxer even though BI President Sandeep Jajodia did admit that her behaviour was "disrespectful towards the code of conduct for athletes". Even the IOA has offered full assistance to the boxer with several top official backing her case. "Everybody, from the Sports Ministry to the IOA, has worked so hard for me. India need to make the best out of ISL: Zico N
EW DELHI: Comparing Japan's rise in Asian football after the advent of JLeague to that of Indian soccer post Indian Super League, Brazilian great and FC Goa head coach Zico said that the 159-ranked nation should make the most of the ongoing tournament. "There was no professional league in Japan before the start of J-League. Football is already existing in India and we need to make the best out of ISL. In Japan then, there were stadiums with capacity of (only) 500010000," said the 61-year-old. While India continue to struggle in world rankings and are placed 30th in Asia, Japan are listed 52nd in the world and occupy the second position in the continent. Zico, whose role in transforming Japanese football is well documented, said that India need to make the best out of ISL. "In Japan the difference was that everyone was playing in one league only and two leagues like in India. Here some of the very good players are not playing in ISL. In Japan, all the best Japanese players were playing in the JLeague along with top foreign players. We need to chose the

Murray keeps semi bid alive, Federer strolls L
ONDON: Andy Murray kept alive his bid to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Tour Finals with a crucial 6-3, 7-5 victory in his shoot-out with Milos Raonic on Tuesday. Murray knew he would have been eliminated from the prestigious season-ending event at London's O2 Arena if he lost to Canada's Raonic, but the world number six produced a strong performance to secure his first Group B win and remain in the hunt for a last four berth. The former Wimbledon champion now has to beat six-time winner Roger Federer in his final group match
on Thursday to qualify, while Raonic, having lost both matches, is almost certain to be knocked out. "On Sunday, there wasn't much magic. Today I came up with some good shots in the right mo-
ments. Milos didn't serve as well as he can and that helped," Murray said. "It's a nice match against Roger to look forward to. It'll be a great atmosphere again." Murray's victory also meant Federer is not 100 percent certain to make the semis despite winning both his group matches, including a 6-3, 6-2 stroll against Japan's Kei Nishikori earlier on Tuesday. After playing for six consecutive weeks in a successful bid to qualify for the Finals after briefly falling out of the top 10, Murray chalked up titles in Shenzhen, Vienna and Valencia to salvage his ranking.
Pakistan on verge of first Test win over NZ
ABU DHABI: Pakistan produced another ruthless performance to move to the brink of victory in the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. A ninth wicket stand of 36 in 14.5 overs between Mark Craig (27) and Ish Sodhi (27) delayed Pakistan's victory on the fourth day at Sheikh Zayed Stadium but New Zealand were struggling on 174-8 after being set a daunting target of 408. Pakistan need just two wickets on the final day for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series while the Kiwis still need 306 for an unlikely win on the fifth and final day.
