The survivor followed the duo who took her to Dharavi's Maharashtra Nisarg Udyaan and raped her. They assaulted the survivor badly and left the spot, she survived severe head injuries and was located by the police patrolling van in time. $18,000 offer to stay in bed DREAM job for couch potatoes! NASA is offering to pay people US $18,000 -- all they have to do is spend 70 days in bed. The US space agency's 'Bed Rest' research is designed to study the effects of prolonged exposure to micro-gravity and requires participants to remain horizontal for a period of 70 days. In the study, scientists will gauge how effective exercise would be for astronauts who lose muscle, cardiovascular and bone function while in zero-gravity conditions. Participants would first spend two to three weeks moving around and doing normal everyday things inside the "bed rest facility". They would then spend 10 weeks
lying in a bed with their body tilted slightly backwards with their head down and feet up. The only way to relieve and clean oneself would be by using a plastic bedpan and washing with a handheld shower-head while still horizontal. The test subjects may also experience back and neck pain from constant lying down. The next 14 days would entail "reconditioning activities" – squatting, cycling and walking while still lying down - and regular tests to see how regular exercises assist the body in adapting back to normal, according to 'The Independent'. NASA is looking for healthy participants who will have to pass

Dogs can detect prostate cancer with 90pc accuracy
TRAINED dogs can sniff out prostate cancer from urine samples with over 90 per cent accuracy, scientists have found. The findings from an Italy-based team of researchers raise the possibility of canines' sense of smell helping doctors identify a number of human cancers and infectious diseases. In the study published in the Journal of Urology, two female German shepherd dogs sniffed urine samples from 900 men, 360 with prostate cancer and 540 without. Both animals were right in well over 90 per cent of cases, 'The Guardian' reported. The researchers, from the Humanitas Clinical and Research Centre in Milan and other institutes, admitted further work is needed to determine how valuable the dogs' skill might be in identifying, in daily practice, the signs of prostate cancer. Currently, prostate cancer is detected by a blood test known as the PSA test, by physical examination and by biopsy.
The PSA test is not routinely offered because it is not considered reliable enough for screening. The study results were welcomed by the Buckinghamshire-based charity Medical Detection Dogs which has been training dogs to sniff out diseases. It has carried out similar research which showed dogs can achieve 93 per cent
accuracy. Co-founder Claire Guest of Medical Detection Dogs said the results offer further proof that dogs have the ability to detect human cancer. "It is particularly exciting that we have such a high success rate in the detection of prostate cancer, for which the existing tests are woefully inadequate," she said.
Guenter Grass dies at age 87 GUENTER GRASS, the Nobelwinning German writer who gave voice to the generation that came of age during the horrors of the Nazi era but later ran into controversy over his own World War II past and stance toward Israel, has died. He was 87. Matthias Wegner, spokesman for the Steidl publishing house, confirmed that Grass died on Monday morning in a Luebeck hospital. Grass was lauded by Germans for helping to revive their culture in the aftermath of World War II and helping to give voice and support to democratic discourse in the postwar nation. Yet he provoked the ire of many in 2006 when he revealed in his memoir "Skinning the Onion" that, as a teenager, he had served in the Waffen-SS, the combat arm of Adolf Hitler's notorious paramilitary organization. In 2012, Grass drew sharp criticism at home and was

declared persona non grata by Israel after publishing a prose poem, "What Must Be Said," in which he criticized what he described as Western hypocrisy over Israel's nuclear program and labeled the country a threat to "already fragile world peace" over its belligerent stance on Iran. A trained sculptor, Grass made his literary reputation with "The Tin Drum," published in 1959. It was followed by "Cat and Mouse" and "Dog Years," which made up what is called the Danzig Trilogy after the town of his birth, now the Polish city of Gdansk.

fter having faced flak in the just concluded budget session of the state legislature over the deteriorating law and order situation in his home town Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cracked the whip with a major reshuffle of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the state. Before leaving for his foreign trip to Germany yesterday night, Fadnavis transferred and promoted 37 IPS officers. What is important is that out of 37 IPS officers, 10 officers are related to Nagpur region alone. Sardar Tara Singh’s appointment on Hazur Sahib Board draws Sikh ire By Raju Vernekar
T
he appointment of BJP MLA Sardar Tara Singh from Mumbai as the Chairman of 'Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Management Board, Nanded' has sparked outrage in Sikh circles and the Sikh activists from Nanded have threatened to launch an agitation opposing the direct appointment of the Chairman. According to Ravindersingh Modi, a Sikh activist from Nanded, as per section 6 (A) of the Act passed in1956 by the erstwhile Hyderabad state, the chairman, vice-chairman, secretary should be elected by the members of the board. But now the Government has amended the above section to accommodate political workers outside 'Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib, Nanded', who have nothing to do with religious activities. “Besides, the Government notification of March 16, 2015 has not mentioned the date and timing of the first meeting of the new board adding to further confusion”, he added. Globally, Singh is also facing criticism that he is totally inclined towards RSS and a non-baptised Sikh. Reacting to criticism, Sardar Tara Singh told ADC that he has been a President of the 'Sion-Koliwada Gurudwara' in Mumbai for the last 20 years so there was nothing wrong in he
being appointed Chief of the Nanded Board. “As an elected representative I have been visiting temples, mosques and for that matter any religious place for the last 35 years. So no one can brand me as an RSS stooge. Now the 17-member board has already been constituted and approved by Minority Affairs Minister Eknath Khadse and it awaits the Chief Minister's nod”, he added. The Nanded Gurudwara board was not constituted since July 15, 2000, due to a dispute between the two factions of 'Sachkhand Hazuri Khalsa Diwan' and was under the control of the Government. Subsequently, a committee headed by retired judge of Bombay High Court Justice J S Bhatia was set up to recommend amendment to 'Takht Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Board, Nanded Act, 1956'. In place of 17 members as per the Act, the Bhatia Committee recommended a 21member board. However no board was set up. As such in response to a petition, the Bombay high court issued a contempt notice to the secretary of the forest and revenue department. Now the new board has been constituted and the 'Nanded Sikh Gurudwara Sachkhand Shri Hajur Abchalnagar Sahib Bill' has also been introduced in the state legislative council.

78-year-old former army man has been arrested by Samata Nagar police for allegedly molesting a 10-yearold girl in Kandivli (East). The incident took place near Thakur Village area on Saturday morning and the accused Sudhir Prakash Arora was known to the girl as they Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ as a political party on the basis of the article. It is for the court of law to adjudicate on the matter and pass the order. The Sena MP had argued that if the minority community were to be disenfranchised for sometime

On the day of incident, the girl was playing in the neighborhood, when the accused offered to give her a ride in his car and get chocolates from the nearby shop. After the wedding however, he used to take the bride for a honeymoon and desert them after robbing their jewelery. On Wednesday a 32-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh told police officers that after getting married, the accused told her that they had to come to Mumbai for a relative's wedding. He then took her to a hotel, “The woman told us that the car ride was long and there were hills and many toll booths on the way. We think that the accused might have taken her to Lonavala,â€? said an officer. On Thursday the accused took his wife
to a mall in Malad for shopping and asked her to carry all her jewelery. When the woman went to the bathroom, she handed over her bag and other belongings to her husband who fled with it. On Friday the Bangur Nagar police registered an FIR against Sayeed and began tracing him. The woman was shown photos of wanted accused from various police stations amongst which she identified Sayeed from a similar case in Borivali. “We are now finding out how many more women has Sayeed cheated, said an officer from the Bangur Nagar police station. Sayeed never maintained any physical relations with any woman he married. His sole ambition was to rob their valuables. Around two lakhs worth property, including 6 tolas gold besides cash were recovered from his possession, police added.

Hope she can still vote ! It may be recalled that late Sena chief Bal Thackeray along with Sena leader's Ramesh Prabhoo and Subhash Desai had been debarred from voting in elections for six years in 1995 after the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the High Court and lower courts. Section 505 (2): Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes – Whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement or report containing rumour or alarming news with intent to create or promote, or which is likely to create or promote, on grounds or religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever, feeling of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both. then the mask of secularism of the so-called secular parties will peal off. He had further substantiated that a similar demand had been made long ago by late Sena chief Bal Thackeray. Leader of opposition in legislative assembly, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has slammed Raut for his comments. In a statement issued here yesterday he remarked that he pitied Raut's intellect. Demanding that the government prosecute Raut for his writing, he added that India is a democratic country and that the constitution of India has guaranteed the right to universal franchise to all the citizens. Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu (BJP) remarked “Shiv Sena view is unacceptable, the government is committed to defending rights of all Indians. case related to late Sena chiefs election rally speech in Vile Parle held for Prabhoo's bye-election in December 1987. Congress defeated candidate Prabhakar Kunte had challenged the election of Prabhoo on grounds that the Sena had sought votes in the name of religion. Meanwhile, the Aam Admi Party, Congress and NCP have also demanded immediate arrest of Raut. They also sought de-recognition of Shiv
Sena as a political party. However, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj has effectively endorsed the stance of Sena by saying Muslims should be disenfranchised. The Congress yesterday demanded cancellation of Raut's Rajya Sabha membership. The NCP has condemned the Shiv Sena’s demand that voting rights of Muslims should be revoked and said that snatching away the fundamental right is a threat to the nation’s democracy. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik alleged that the Shiv Sena wants to end democracy and bring in the rule of German dictator Adolf Hitler. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Malik said, “To snatch away the right of voting from the Muslims is a threat to the democracy. If voting rights of the special sections are snatched away, it only indicates that they want to end the democracy and bring in the Hitler rule and the people will not accept it. Challenge to Kejriwal A
am Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav has made it clear that he is not going to take the harassment by Arvind Kejriwal lying down. He feels badly let down by Kejriwal and that he and Santosh should give up the ‘fight against injustice’. Instead of sulking, the two leaders have reportedly decided to launch a new party. They are confident that they will be able to enlist support from quite a few of the party leaders. It has been established, the duo leaders claim, Arvind Kejriwal is behaving like a dictator. Sympathy and support for the expelled leaders is said to be growing. The way he had treated two top friendly colleagues has been disapproved by some of the leaders. Freedom of expression is not allowed in the party, it is being said. Arvind Kejriwal has shown he is not willing to have a collective, consulting arrangement. This attitude may make some in the party leave him. Yadav is reported to have had secret meeting with some 70 top leaders with regard to the possibility of building a new party. It will not be a surprise if the AAP splits in the near future. Finally, it is the backing of the aam aadmi that helps Arvind Kejriwal to remain in power. Both Santosh and Yogendra have a lot of influence with the people. One of the steps that they are likely to take is to hold public meetings in Delhi. This will enable them to test where they stand with regard to their popularity in Delhi.

R
ELIGIOUS sensitivity has deepened since the advent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime. Even though he has underlined the principle of sarva dharma sambhava, parochialism has shown its ugly face in one field or the other. The judiciary is the only institution that has been above the taint. Nonetheless, the outburst of Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph shows the pent-up feelings of a justice belonging to the minority community. There can be no exception to what he has said: “Our religious and cultural festivals and hues, irrespective of caste and creed, have contributed to the vibrancy of our rich pluralistic culture and ethos. The whole world jealously looks at the beauty of the secular image, communal harmony and cultural integrity of our great nation. India must in these trying times, safeguard her credentials and be a model that other nations must follow.” However, I think that he over-reacted to the scheduling of annual chief justices’ conference on Good Friday. Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu honestly believed that the working of the court would be disturbed because of stretched holidays. He, therefore, decided to utilize the large weekend, which included Good Friday, to hold the conference of justices of state high court chief justices. Where he went wrong was that he did not fathom the sensitivity of Christian judges or the community.
Basics of nationhood
This is not the first time that such a conference has been held on Good Friday. But those days the feeling of discrimination was not suspected by members of the minorities. Now the blatant expression of Hindutva ideology, which the BJP represents and implements, has changed the climate of pluralism that the nation has inhaled since Independence. True, the country has given the BJP an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. This does reflect a change in the thinking of the people, who have been voting for a secular plank until a few years ago. However, it must be remembered that the basic structure of the constitution, defined by the Supreme Court, cannot be changed. One part of that structure is secularism that animates the constitution. What must be disconcerting for the judiciary is the relentless effort by the extremists to change the very basics of our nationhood.

The new terminology like ghar wapsi (reconversion to Hinduism) has been coined to the detriment of pluralism. The Bhagwad Gita has been introduced in the curriculum of Haryana schools. Churches have been attacked in Delhi, Navi Mumbai and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. There is a ban on beef in Haryana and Maharashtra. After a lot of cajoling, Prime Minister Modi deprecated the attack on the churches. Yet, the general perception is that he is not against the soft Hindutva that is spreading in
RTI brings in transparency BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar the country. The BJP-run states are worse because they are not on the national radar and evoke a limited attention. In any case, they are already islands of Hindu chauvinism. The fear among the minorities is, therefore, understandable. I have heard several Muslims saying that they are afraid of their jaan aur maal (life and wealth). The RSS leaders are sitting pretty. Even the liberals in the BJP are mum. They may want the domination of Hindutva ideology. But it is difficult to imagine that they could be in favour of a second class status for Muslims, a flagrant violation of the constitution which enunciates equality before the law and underlines the principle of one man, one vote. It is incumbent on the Modi government, which represents the majority that the institutions remain without the taint of communalism. Particularly, the judiciary cannot afford to have a finger pointed towards it. The allegation by the Prime Minister that the ‘five-star activists’ are driving the courts has only aggravated the situation. The Chief Justice of India has rightly contradicted the statement, adding that the judi-
‘Silence is the key to harmony’ S
OME have a real passion for talking. To them it is an amusement, a pastime. But in the end they exhaust themselves and become nervous, and nothing is gained. Silence seems sometimes very hard to keep, but surely it has great advantages, as disagreement and inharmony can often be avoided. Silence is good for both the wise and the foolish. For the wise man it is good because it avoids unnecessary talk. He can keep his precious thought well cherished within himself. And so he rears the good thought, which is like a plant. And the foolish one covers up his stupidity as long as he keeps silent, and so much the better. Silence raises the dignity of the wise and hides the stupidity of the foolish. Besides the more one evolves the more one will discover the different grades of people, just like the different keys on the piano. One is lower, another is higher. Every person has a different grade of evolution. Also, the higher you evolve more you will find that you cannot drive everyone with the same whip. Besides you will always find that inhar-
ciary and parliament are like ‘siblings’ and must work together “towards a truly and effective administration of justice.” Both the judiciary and parliament are children of democracy. They have to work hand in hand for a just and egalitarian society. One has to correct the other whenever one of them goes wrong. Still the impression that the activists influence the court’s judgment has to be removed. The National Judicial Appointments Commission is expected to replace the collegiums system of appointing judges, giving a greater say to the executive in the process. Yet, there was a time when the executive had its say. But it was found that the government’s interference in appointments and transfers of judges was politically motivated. And hence the matter was left to the judges themselves.
mony is caused unnecessarily by words. On the other hand, however inharmonious the atmosphere created by other persons may be, if you have the words of wisdom you can dissolve the clouds of inharmony. Once when traveling I met a man of a very dense evolution, a soldier who always lived in
MATTER & SPIRIT military surroundings and who had very fixed ideas of his own. And when we were talking together and it appeared that we thought differently about something, I happened to say in order to preserve harmony, “Well, we are brothers!” He looked at me with great anger, and said, “Brothers! How dare you say such a thing!” I said, “I forgot. I am your servant, Sir.” He was very pleased. I could have argued, but this would have created disharmony without reason. The foolishness of that man blazed up just like fire. I put water on it and extinguished it. I did not diminish myself. We are all servants of one another. And it
Still, both the collegiums and the executive have failed to ensure impartiality in appointments. Therefore, the Law Commission should seriously consider how to insulate the judiciary against any influence and constitute some mechanism to take into consideration what the executive says. This way the sensitivity of both the judiciary and the executive which represents the people are taken care of. For example, the Right to Information (RTI) has proved to be useful to know the reason behind a particular decision. This has helped to bring in transparency in the official decisions. It has deepened democracy. The government may feel embarrassed over the disclosure of the truth. But there can be no compromise with the demands of an open society. To that extent, the Prime Minister’s statement comes in the way of scrutiny. This cannot be the purpose of his warning against the activists. He should realize that they are doing their job. Many scams would not have seen the light of the day if they had not questioned the official decisions. The Modi government has to ensure the executive does not in any way interfere in the working of the judiciary. At the same time, the judiciary has to be sensitive enough to the executive’s right to frame policies from time to time. Ultimately, both have to adhere to the limits of boundary delineated by the constitution. pleased and satisfied him. There is a story of a wise healer. A woman went to him and asked, “Can you tell me what to do? I am having a difficult time with my husband. There is a quarrel at home every day.” He said, “That is very easy.” She said, “I would be so grateful.” He said, “I will give you these lozenges, these sweets. You keep them in your mouth when your husband comes home and all will be well. They are magnetized sweets.” And every day she noticed that there was no quarrel any more. After ten days when the sweets were finished she went back to the healer and said, “I would give anything if you could let me have some more of those sweets. They were wonderful.” Then the teacher said, “My friend, you must understand after eating the sweets for ten days, that your husband, having toiled all day, is nervous and tired and weary when he comes home. Naturally he is not in tune. And you made him worse by talking. By keeping silent you gave him nothing to quarrel about, and your home became more harmonious. This should teach you a lesson: that silence is the key to harmony.” — Hazrat Inayat Khan

The will To live Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s super… bacteria. Also known as superbugs, these bacteria have been in the spotlight recently, thanks to their ability to withstand the effects of the very things that are supposed to kill them — antibiotics. Dev Goswami & Anindra Siqueira tell you about superbacteria, update you on the research being done in a bid to combat it and tell you whether you can do anything about it
O
ne of the wonders of the human body is how easily it adapts to things. Whether it’s medication and exercise, or the amount of alcohol that you can consume, after a certain point, your body will start to get used to the stimuli or react differently to it. But, the human body isn’t the only thing that possesses this unique ability. Bacteria, which can be the building blocks of life (but can also lead to its downfall), boast of this ability as well. Over the past few years, medical experts have been raising concerns over the prevalence of superbacteria — a variant that is resistant to most types of antibiotics that we know of. Read on as we tell you more about them.
MDR anD TDR-TB explaineD As Dr. Pradeep Gadge, consultant diabetologist, Shrey Diabetes Centre, tells us, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a growing problem in India. Treatment options are expensive and the medication isn’t readily available. Also, people can experience negative side-effects from the drugs used to treat MDR-TB, so it becomes even more difficult to treat. Dr. Arvind Patil, general physician at Columbia Asia Hospital, says, “MDR-TB and the more serious XDR-TB (extremely drug-resistant TB) are becoming more prevalent in India. This is mainly because people with the disease feel better after a few weeks of treatment and stop taking their medication as prescribed. People have to be given second-line medications which are more toxic and can have undesirable side-effects.” Even worse is totally drug-resistant tuberculosis (TDR-TB). According to research published as far back as 2009, TDR-TB strains showed resistance to both first and second-line drugs (which are the first and second choice of drugs used to fight TB). Multidrug resistance is believed to spread because the treatment for TB is not managed properly. The spread is also attributed to person-toperson transmission. To successfully cure TB, a strict six-month course of drugs needs to be followed, along with close supervision.
WhaT is supeRBacTeRia? The simplest way to understand superbacteria is to take the human body and its immune system as an example. Do you know why you contract chicken pox only once in your lifetime? (Yes, there are cases of people contracting it more than once, but it is very rare.) The science behind this is that once the virus enters your body, your immune system manufactures certain antibodies that target it in order to combat the condition. These antibodies remain in your system, protecting you against future attacks from the chicken pox virus, which means that your body will fight off the infection even before the symptoms begin to show. Bacteria do not have an immune system of their own, but the concept of adapting to fight something that is trying to harm you is similar. They develop a resistance to the organisms or the chemicals in the drugs that are trying to eliminate them, simply as a survival mechanism.
Why Do They BecoMe ResisTanT? The birth of superbacteria is due to excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics, incorrect medical diagnoses and the use of antibiotics in agriculture. Overuse Continued on pg 10 «

Update on cUrrent research We’re used to the idea of taking an antibiotic to fight a disease or infection. In essence, this is usually what makes the bacteria develop resistance, and there is a lot of research being conducted to find out what we can do to fight this. But, rather than suggesting a more conservative use for prescription drugs, one study (published on April 8, 2015) proposes using a series of drugs — commonly dubbed cocktail treatments — each at the lowest dosage possible. The study, conducted by Ayari FuentesHernandez, Jessica Plucain and Fabio Gori and published in the journal PLOS Biology,
showed that drug-resistant bacteria could be killed by choosing specific drug combinations at sublethal dosages. Of course, therein lies the hitch. Of the 136 combinations of sequential treatments that the study looked at, only five were successful. Most of the research aimed at combating drug resistance focuses on higher doses and a more powerful approach in general. But, this one suggests the opposite. However, self-medication is never a good idea and it’s always best to consult your doctor before undertaking any course of treatment.
>> Research on combating drug-resistant bacteria is extremely important
>> Practising good hygiene will keep you safe from infections Continued from pg 9 « of antibiotics is the leading cause behind the prevalence of superbacteria. It’s easy to understand why antibiotics are a mixed blessing once you take into account the fact that even when they’re used properly, they can still lead to the creation of drugresistant bacteria. Prescribing antibiotics when there is no need to, prescribing a range of antibiotics when only one will suffice and incorrect diagnoses, that leads to incorrect and unnecessary prescriptions, are other factors that cause the formation of superbacteria. A few studies, as well as individual scientists, have investigated the use of antibiotics in agriculture, with many putting forth a theory about how this can lead to the birth of drug-resistant bacteria.
can yoU do anything aboUt it? While there’s not much that you can do to protect yourself from an infection or a disease caused by superbacteria, Dr. Pradeep’s advice is to avoid overusing or misusing antibiotics. “Be patient. Don’t pressure your doctor to prescribe antibiotics because you think that you will be able to recuperate faster. Your doctor will know what’s best for you. It’s also not advisable to look for another doctor just because you aren’t feeling better within a day or two after you’ve been treated. Believing in your doctor is more important than resorting to the unnecessary prescription of antibiotics,” he tells us. Dr. Arvind agrees. “There’s not much a person can do,” he says. “However, infections caused by drug-resistant strains are mostly contracted by healthcare workers and you don’t usually notice them spread through social settings.” The most important thing to fight infection is to practise good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water whenever possible, handle food properly and cook meat thoroughly. Also, make sure that you complete the full course of antibiotics that is prescribed by your doctor. This will minimise the likelihood of the bacteria, or disease-causing pathogens, developing a resistance. So, even if there’s not much that you can do, is there hope for better treatment in the future, or for future generations? Dr. Pradeep explains that newer antibiotics are being developed to fight these drugresistant pathogens. He says, “There is research being done on certain viruses called bacteriophages, which target and kill drug-resistant bacteria. The use of such
viruses can help tackle superbugs. Let’s hope the future is better.”
Why are We talking aboUt it? Well, if you contract a disease that is caused by a superbug, treatment will be extremely difficult, and in some cases, impossible. Research is ongoing (see the next section to find out more) and while the future may not be completely bleak, it’s the present that gives us cause for worry. A report by the World Health Organisation (published in April last year) had this to say about the prevalence of superbacteria — “the threat of superbacteria is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. Antibiotic resistance (which occurs when bacteria change so that antibiotics no longer work for people who need them to treat infections) is now a major threat to public health.”
diseases caUsed by drUg-resistant bacteria Bacteria, like any other organism, evolve and adapt to their environment. If bacteria are frequently treated with antibiotic drugs, they will develop an increasingly strong resistance, which is cause for concern. Dr. Pradeep says, “We’re seeing a growing resistance to antibiotic drugs in all bacteria. However, those that cause urinary tract infections, pneumonia and abdominal sepsis/ infections and some that cause skin infections are predominantly becoming resistant. In India, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a fast-growing problem. Most of these are life threatening infections.”
intrinsic resistance
>> Needlessly consuming and prescribing antibiotics has led to the birth of superbacteria
Some bacteria are unaffected by antibiotics, but this isn’t because they have been exposed to the drugs, it’s because they have an in-built resistance to them (possibly a genetic mutation), even without coming in contact with the antibiotic medication. In 1952, bacterial strains that were inherently resistant to penicillin were observed by Esther and Joshua Lederberg. Since bacteria reproduce (or replicate) comparatively fast, this may be a losing game we are playing with time.

Is Canola oIl safe? Over the years, there has been some confusion over whether canola oil has any real health benefits. Sara Shah suggests you read on to find out more
A heady mixture of light spirits and fruit juices poured over crushed ice sounds like a fun way to beat the summer heat, doesn’t it? It does to us! Yamini Walia brings you a few low-calorie suggestions that will give you respite from the heat without adversely affecting your health
T
Mojito
calories: 96 If you’re confused about what to prepare, a mojito is always a safe bet. Chef Karan Talwar says, “It’s the perfect way to start a meal, since it increases hunger and helps in digestion.” ingredients: 2 large limes cut into pieces, 2 cups of water, ⅔ cup sugar, ¼ to ½ cup white rum, ½ cup fresh mint leaves, ice cubes Method: n Add lime pieces, water and sugar into a blender. Cover and blend for about 30 seconds or until the limes are chopped. Make sure that you do not turn the mixture into a purée. n Strain through a sieve into a large pitcher. Add in two cups of water. Cover and chill for a few hours. n Stir the rum into the lime mixture. n Moisten the rim of the glasses you’re using with a piece of lime and then dip them into powdered sugar. n Put a few leaves of mint into the glasses. Use a wooden spoon to press the leaves into the bottom of each glass. Press firmly to release the flavour. n Fill the glasses with ice cubes. Pour the lime and alcohol mixture into the glass and serve chilled.
Spiked poMegranate leMonade
calories: 136 With its antioxidant-rich pomegranate juice, this can almost be termed a health tonic. Karan says, “Pomegranate will make this drink better because it has a unique flavour and several health benefits.” ingredients: 2 tsps lime vodka, 2 tsps lemonade, 2 tsps pomegranate juice, ½ cup club soda Method: n All you have to do is combine the ingredients with ice and stir well!
Strawberry-citruS vodka cocktail
calories: 259 This cocktail sounds like every woman’s dream — thanks to the sinful blend of strawberries and vodka. Karan tells us, “Combining strawberry with citrus will make this drink richer in vitamin C.” ingredients: 2 strawberries, ¼ cup dried mint leaves, 7g agave nectar (wholesome sweeteners), ¼ cup citrus vodka, 1 tsp lemon juice Method: n Muddle mint and strawberries together in a shaker, then add in the remaining ingredients. n Shake vigorously with ice for 20 seconds. n Pour the contents of the shaker into a tall glass. Include all of the mint and strawberry pulp.
Health qualms
Over the years, there have been several health studies that have claimed that canola oil is not as healthy as other oils. The reason is that most of it (80% to be precise) is produced from genetically modified canola plants. Additionally, the oil is extracted using a chemical solvent called hexane. The refining process, which uses steam to deodorise or remove compounds from the oil that could contribute to an unpleasant smell or taste, adds small amounts of trans-fat to the oil. Whether it can lead to any serious damage or not is yet to be proven.

Sangria Sparkler
calories: 100 Drinking moderate amounts of red wine can boost healthy cholesterol. Karan explains, “The result is a reduction in your risk of heart disease and stroke.” ingredients: ¾ bottle of dry red wine, 1 cup light orange juice, ¼ cup brandy or cognac, ¼ cup orange liqueur, 2 tbsp sugar, 2 sliced oranges, 2 cups club soda, crushed ice and/or orange peel curls (optional) Method: n In a large pitcher, mix the wine, orange juice, brandy, orange liqueur, sugar and orange slices. Let it chill for at least two hours. n Add club soda, just before serving the drink. n Serve over crushed ice and with orange peel curls, if desired.
he health benefits and effectiveness of canola oil have been highly debated over the years. While some experts consider it healthy for your heart, others claim that it’s one of the most genetically modified types of fat today and that it is chock full of chemicals and trans-fat. While there is no concrete proof about whether it is healthy or not, we decided to consult Krupa Mhatre, nutritionist at Gold’s Gym, to address our doubts. But, before that, read on to find out more about why canola oil has gained a notorious reputation over the years.
Frozen-liMe MargaritaS
calories: 120 Who doesn’t love margaritas? Karan says, “Lime is rich in vitamin C and helps in detoxification. It also helps with digestion.” So, don’t feel shy about knocking back a couple of glasses of this concoction. ingredients: 1½ cans of frozen limeade concentrate, ⅔ cup tequila, ½ cup light orange juice or orange liqueur, 4 cups of ice cubes, ½ medium lime, coarse salt, orange slices Method: n In a blender, combine the limeade concentrate, tequila and orange juice. Cover and blend until combined. n With the blender still running, add ice cubes one at a time, blending until the mixture is slushy. n Cut a thick slice of lime in half. Rub it around the rim of a glass. Dip the rim into a dish of coarse salt to coat it. n Pour the mixture into the prepared glasses. n Garnish the glass with orange slices, if desired.
Krupa supports the health benefits of canola oil. “Canola oil is made from crushed rapeseed. It can be included in your diet as a regular source of fats. It contains less saturated fats and higher levels of unsaturated fats when compared with other oils, which helps reduce cholesterol levels, maintain healthy blood pressure and reducing the risk of developing blockages in your heart,” she says. She also explains that canola oil can easily become your main source of Omega-3 fatty acids because of its high content of the same and helps keep eczema, cracked heels and acne at bay. In addition to this, canola oil has great anti-aging and hair repairing properties. “Canola oil is also rich in fat soluble vitamins E and K, which help to reduce signs of ageing such as acne, fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and spots. It also repairs damaged hair, prevents hair fall, dandruff and split ends and treats frizzy hairs. It’s an important ingredient in several cosmetic products and body oils as well,” Krupa says. By now, your doubts about canola oil have probably been cleared, but we still suggest staying away from conventional brands and picking coldpressed canola oil instead because they don’t use steam at the processing stage. >> You should pick cold-pressed canola oil instead of conventional brands

Mostly As If you’ve answered with mostly As, you’ve probably already guessed that you buy into health dogma too easily, because our quiz steers you headfirst into that realisation. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. The amount of weight you gain depends on your calorie intake and the amount of exercise you are getting. There’s a healthy way to shed fat and most fad diets that stress on extreme regimens can be harmful in the long run. If you must stress out over every ounce of body fat, try and search for the science behind these wonder diets. If you can’t find sound logic behind them, give them a skip. Mostly Bs You seem to be insulated from the misleading information on the internet. You either know your way around the weight loss arena well or don’t really care about losing that extra kilo. Go about your life as usual, enjoying every minute of it instead of agonising over what to eat and the hunger that accompanies most fad or crash diets. But we suspect you don’t need us to tell you that.

Mostly As While we can’t tell you exactly why you feel lonely, what we can tell you is that your laziness is exacerbating it. Whatever the actual reason that you’re lonely may be, in order to get out of it, you’re going to have to make an effort, but you’re doing just the opposite! Read our box in order to understand how laziness can make you feel lonelier and what you can do to combat it. Mostly Bs If you’re lonely, you need to consider other reasons because as far as we can tell, you are not lazy at all. You do make the effort to go out, meet new people and spend time with your loved ones. You may already be on the way to combating loneliness and in that case, good going! However, if you still feel lonely, don’t hesitate to talk to a close friend to family member about it. Remember that accepting it and being open to talking about it is one of the easiest ways to beat loneliness.
Go uphill Did you know that a flight of stairs or a hill can serve as the perfect workout equipment for your bottom? Running uphill uses gravity as a resistance and tones your bottom. This is why treadmills these days have an incline feature that allows you to stimulate walking or running uphill.
Say no to sugar This is bad news for sugar addicts, but your body (especially your bottom) will thank you for it. Sugar is not the best food to eat when you’re looking to banish fat from any part of your body as it needs to be burned off immediately. If it’s not burned off through exercise, it gets stored as fat in your body.

t’s the weekend and you’ve just woken up. You feel as though this is the perfect day to watch a film at the theatre or catch up with friends over a few drinks. However, somewhere between breakfast and lunch, you lose your initial enthusiasm. And, instead of picking up your phone to call or text your friends, you pick it up to play a game. You spend the rest of the weekend cooped up at home, only to end up feeling a bit low as Sunday evening approaches, as you think about a weekend that you have just wasted doing nothing. The next course of action? Vow that next weekend will be better — except, of course, it isn’t. If this situation sounds familiar to you, you may be stuck in a rut of laziness that is not only making you lazier, it’s also making you feel lonely. Answer the following questions to find out if this is true.

2. You recently exchanged numbers with someone at a party and they asked you to call them. What would you do? a. Do nothing. They’ll call if they want to. b. Get in touch when you have the time.
You don’t have to attend every event you’re invited to and you can certainly avoid the ones that don’t sound like fun. However, avoid cancelling a plan simply because you are lazy. You can take baby steps by inviting your friends over instead of going out.
3. Do your parents often complain that you never visit or call them? a. Yes. b. No. 4. We all avoid a few people that we know. Why do you avoid them? a. Meeting them and staying in touch requires making so much of an effort! b. I don’t like them. 5. There’s an event that you just have to go to. However, if it gets cancelled, are you ecstatic? a. It’s one thing to avoid people whom you dislike and quite another to avoid all forms of social contact simply because it involves you having to make an effort. Making an effort is something that you’re just going to have to do. Start by setting some time aside to call or visit your parents. If you’ve made new friends or met someone you’re interested in, take the initiative of getting in touch with them.

gives you something to work towards. This will ensure that you stay motivated to work out and you won’t give up within a few weeks. However, the goal that you set should be realistic, but not so easy to achieve that you lose steam only after a few weeks of exercising. An easy way to stay focused is to participate in a fitness event or a race, even if it is a few months away. This will drive you to put in the time and effort required to build your fitness levels. n A training plan: One of the biggest
reasons that workouts prove ineffective is because people don’t have a thought-out plan. A well-structured plan will not only guide you regarding what you need to do in order to achieve your goal, but will also act as a tool that monitors your progress over the coming weeks and months.
weight loss is your main objective. A resistance training program boosts general conditioning, your overall health, functional strength and metabolism. A balanced combination of resistance and aerobic exercise will guarantee success. n The 30-minute workout: Not having
enough time is perhaps the most common excuse that we use to avoid exercising. Don’t underestimate the value of a 30-minute workout as a wellplanned workout can help you achieve excellent results. Before you hit the gym, make a plan about what you want to do and at what intensity. Once you start, it will be easy to make the most of your time at the gym. n Rest intervals: Resting
between sets is as important as resting every day. Your muscles need time to recover — even while you’re exercising. Depending on your training goals and the exercises you perform, these
intervals can range from 10 seconds to three minutes. Use this recovery interval wisely to get the most out of your workout sessions. Also, don’t waste your time chatting with friends when you should be getting back to your workout! n Sports drinks: Understand the
difference between sugar and caffeine-laden energy drinks and electrolyte-rich sports drinks. Nutrition and hydration are important factors that will ensure effective results. However, if you’re aiming for weight loss, avoid sports drinks as they are usually high in calories and sugar, which means that they return the calories that you burn during your session. In such situations, the best way to stay hydrated is by drinking enough water.
n Resistance
n Pick the right time: All
gyms have peak hours. If you are struggling to find machines or weights during these hours, try to switch your daily schedule
around, so that you go to the gym when it’s less crowded. This way you will not only have more space, but also more options. You can also experiment with different types of exercises. n Switch up your routine: Your body gets
used to a specific set of exercises pretty quickly. You’ll see results for a few weeks and then you’ll feel that you’re stuck in a rut. So, avoid performing the same exercises every day. Change the order of your exercises every now and then — ideally every 4-6 weeks. n Core and abdominal training: Exercising
your core is really important as a fit core ensures a fit body. Incorporate total body and functional core exercises in your routine. Work on good posture and controlled movements. You can even do some of these exercises in-between sets, during your normal exercise routine. However, remember not to perform these core exercises at the end of your routine. n Respect space: Remember, all members
of the gym are paying customers who are as interested in staying fit as you are. Respect their space and training environment. >> Resistance training is as important as aerobic exercise
exercise: Aerobic exercises are important and fun, but don’t ignore resistance exercises even if

Swimming is considered to be one of the best exercises, and no one can deny the tempting prospect of spending an hour in the pool during summer. So, Yamini Walia tells you about the launch of Michael Phelps Swimming training programmes
I
nstead of heading to the gym, several fitness enthusiasts prefer swimming — it is not only an effective form of exercise, but it also helps beat the soaring heat. Keeping this in mind, Waveline Sports has launched Michael Phelps Swimming (MPS) training programme at 14 locations across Mumbai including Body Rhythm Club, Ryan International Schools, YMCA, Ajmera Global School, I Land Sports Academy, Gold Crest School and Dr. Pillai’s School. Michael Phelps, who is the owner, president and CEO of MPS, made history by winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. With the launch of MPS, Michael Phelps has advanced his dream of growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthy, active lifestyles. MPS is a swimming training programme targeted at children across all ages and even their parents, who are the decision makers. The global swimming

programme focuses on a variety of factors, ranging from water-safety and elite technique to stroke refinement. The methods of teaching have been developed after countless hours of trial and error. This programme is unique in its approach to teaching as it has been modelled to support a child’s development and education. Cathy Bennett, who was Michael Phelps first swim instructor, has carefully build the programme over a period of 30 years. With degrees in child psychology and early childhood education, she has developed a routine that focuses on building comfort, confidence and inculcating a feel for the water in each participant. Rather than teaching by cause-and-effect and box-checking of skills, their methods involve holistic teaching and learning strategies for long-term swimming safety, all of which are based on the 4B’s of swimming; breathing, balance, buoyancy and breath control.

Summer DefectS
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2015
Summer is here and it brings with it several health conditions. Sara Shah suggests you take note of a few common allergies that are most prevalent during the hot months
S
ummer calls for picnics at the park, poolside fun and holiday revelry. But, do you know what else this season has in store for us? Allergies. That’s right... it’s not all fun in the sun! From aggravated asthma and increased respiratory problems to fungal infections and skin disorders, you need to be prepared so that the summer — even if it’s not comfortable — is at least tolerable. So, here we take a look at a few common summer problems and tell you what you can do to prepare for them.
>> If you suffer from asthma, stay indoors on the warmest days
>> Lipedema mostly affects women and leads to fattening of the legs
asthma
« Know more
If you suffer from asthma, it’s likely that your condition will get aggravated during the summer months. The reason your asthma gets worse during the hot months is because there’s more pollen in the air during summer. In order to recognise allergy-induced asthma, monitor your symptoms and consult your doctor when your condition is at its worst. Your doctor will be able to provide you with stronger medication to minimise your symptoms, but you should stay indoors on the warmest and windiest days. If you must go out, try stepping out later in the day. Also, keep your home dust-free and switch on your air conditioning.
sUmmer COLDs You’re all set for the pool party that your friend is throwing — the only thing that stops you from going is that terrible, terrible summer cold. A runny, itchy nose, sneezing, coughing and watery eyes are all symptoms
>> You’re likely to suffer from a fungal infection if the weather is hot and humid
Lipedema
Several people confuse lipedema with obesity because both are fat disorders. Yamini Walia tells you about the difference between the two
What is it? of a summer cold. If you’re wondering why you have contracted a cold when it’s sweltering hot outside, remember that just like asthma, a summer cold is triggered by a high pollen count. And, this isn’t regular pollen. Trees are done flowering by late spring (March) and what’s left in the air is usually pollen from weeds. Another reason for your summer cold is the rise in ozone levels in the air. This occurs when sunlight reacts with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides that are produced from burning fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. If you suffer from a cold every summer, your doctor is likely to prescribe antihistamines, which will help ease your symptoms. You can also take preventive measures such as wearing a mask when you’re cleaning your house and using air purifiers. Ensure that you wash all your clothes and bedding with hot water in order to kill dust mites.
FUnGaL inFeCtiOns Fungal infections usually surface during the hot months when it’s uncomfortably hot and humid. And the conditions in our coastal city make it ideal for fungal infections to take root. You can experience a fungal infection in your groin or underarm area, toe joints or areas of your body that are prone to excessive sweating. Fungal infections are treatable and your doctor could prescribe topical as well as oral medication, which will treat and cure the infection. However, you need to ensure that your body is dry at all times. Use good quality, anti-fungal powder in order to
Lipedema — not to be confused with lipidemia (or hyperlipidemia) — usually affects women and is a disorder of adipose (fat) tissue. The condition results in an irregular distribution of fat beneath your skin, mainly on the legs and buttocks. Dr. Behram Pardiwala — Internal Medicines, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, tells us, “The easiest way to identify lipedema is to see if there is fat deposition in your feet. Lipedema usually leads to the fattening of the upper arms, buttocks and legs. But, your feet along with the rest of the body won’t be affected. When you’re obese, your entire body gains weight including your face.” It may sound like a cosmetic concern, but ultimately, it can cause pain and other problems. Believed to be hormonal in nature, lipedema is usually triggered at puberty, but it can get worse during or after pregnancy, pre-menopause or after a gynaecological surgery or any surgery that involves the application of anaesthesia.
treatments eliminate or prevent the growth of fungus on your body.
Unfortunately, if you suffer from lipedema, your exercise routine won’t help to reduce fat. You’ll have to resort to one of the following treatments:
heat rash
n Lymph-sparing Water assisted Liposuction
A heat rash can be the result of sweat that accumulates on your skin. Also, heavily clothed parts of your body are more prone to a heat rash. So, ensure that you wear clothing that’s made from breathable fabrics or try to minimise the time that you spend in thick clothing. You can ease your symptoms by applying a cold compress to the affected areas or by taking a cold shower. Air dry your body after a bath and apply a mild calamine lotion to sooth the irritation.
eCZema If you suffer from eczema, it’s best that you refrain from activities that make you sweat excessively because sweat will aggravate your condition. There isn’t much else you can do to ease the symptoms, apart from staying cool and ensuring good hygiene. Try to stay indoors as much as you can and don’t lounge around in sweaty workout clothes for too long.
(WaL): The procedure uses a hollow tube that is placed under your skin to suck out fat tissue. Several sessions may be necessary, but this depends on the amount of abnormal fat present.
n Complete decongestive therapy: This is
another successful way to treat lipedema and get relief from the painful symptoms. It involves: Manual lymphatic drainage: This is a form of massage, which uses gentle, rhythmic pumping movements to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid around blocked areas and to healthy vessels. Compression: The use of stretch bandages or custom-fitted pantyhose, panties or spandex shorts to increase tissue pressure in the swollen legs and reduce the chances of fluid building up again. Exercise: This helps to reduce fluid build-up, boost mobility and improve how well your legs function.

stylish in
summer Summer calls for several changes including a change in your beauty routine. Sara Shah has a few tips that will help you start afresh with your beauty routine, so that you can stay stylish without ruining your skin during the warmer months
W
hile a heavy, tinted moisturiser does wonders for your skin during winter, you can’t use the same product during summer. Not only will it make your skin look oily and greasy, your skin is also likely to suffer from a reaction of the heat with heavy product. We’re not saying that you need to toss your entire beauty and skincare kit out of the window, but tweaking it bit will help you achieve a flawless look, even when it is 40°C outside.
>> Pick a light-tinted moisture, instead of a heavy foundation
switCh up You need to focus on how your skin feels during summer, and it is going to be uncomfortable with heavy foundation or super-hydrating moisturiser in the sweltering heat. Not only is it too much for your skin and pores to handle, it will also melt the minute you step outside. So, switch to a light, tinted moisturiser such as a BB or CC cream. Don’t aim for complete coverage, but for something that gives you a natural glow and evens out your complexion. You can even choose powdered foundations that will keep your skin oil-free. And, just like your foundation, keep cream blush at an arm’s length and pick powdered blush instead.
wash your tools Although it’s an oft-repeated tip, we can’t stress on it enough. When you use the same brush for too long, you can’t blame your skin for acting up. And, it gets worse during summer, when you sweat more and your oil glands go into overdrive and produce excess sebum. Wash you brushes and your sponges with a mild cleanser twice a week and ensure that all product residue has been removed.
upGraDe your spf >> Bruises might be a cause of over-thecounter blood thinners such as aspirin Dear Barbara, I bruise easily (like the song!). I don’t really know how, maybe I brush past the edges of walls or desks, but somehow I always end up with red bruises on my thighs and arms. Should I be concerned? — sushila Khanna, Vakola Dear sushila, This sounds like something you should talk to your doctor about. Bruising tends to get more prominent with age, but it could also happen if you’re consuming any blood thinners, whether prescription or over-the-counter ones such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Besides this, certain foods such as garlic and ginger, as well as dietary supplements such as vitamin E and fish oil, have been linked with blood thinning and bruising.
Your tinted SPF 25 moisturiser will not be enough for the hot months, especially if you will be spending hours in the sun. You need an SPF rating of at least 30 in order to prevent skin damage. And remember, the higher the SPF, the better protection you’ll get. You may dislike using sunscreen because of the heavy texture, but there are several lighter variants that you can pick up. You can even purchase gel-based sunscreens, which form a thin, protective layer on your skin and are also very refreshing.
every day during the summer, but it’s just going to make your skin produce even more oil. Use dry shampoos to soak up the oil from your locks and tie your hair up in order to prevent it from coming in contact with the sweat on your forehead and neck.
GeNtle washes During winter, it’s okay to use gentle cleansers, which prevent your skin from drying out during the cold weather. However, those aren’t enough to keep your skin clean when it is hot and humid. Pick a stronger and more effective cleanser that will keep your skin oil free for longer periods.
toNe up If you don’t use a toner, we suggest you pick one up right now. Toner reduces the amount of oil that your skin produces and is light enough to be used every day. Wash your face and then pour some over a cotton ball and apply it to your face. Follow this up with an effective moisturising routine. >> Always use a toner in summers to reduce the oil production on your skin

The dancers concluded the performance with the typical 'Thillana' that commands intricate move-
ments and varied rhythmic patterns which is not at all easy to master. On the whole it was a pleasing exposition with a promise to do better with years of devotion. Guru Bhupali led the musical orchestra with the 'nattuvangam', melodious singing by Shivaprasad, excellent percussion music on the 'mridangam' by Satish Krishnamurthy and other members of the team.

Devendra Dodake, a famous actor-director from Vidarbha, has come up with his debut film along with other dramatics from Nagpur. The film has a certain suspense hidden in this title. Just then destiny plays such a game that their life turns upside down. Caught in a tricky situation where the parents are fighting their way out of hardship within those two days... is the heart touching story. BECOMING WORLD NO 1 IS SURREAL FEELING: SANIA 22

EW DELHI: There has been many cherished moments in her eventful tennis journey during the last decade but the enormity of becoming World No 1 is such that Sania Mirza has been left with a "surreal feeling" even though she had always dreamt of achieving this feat. In an extraordinary run with Martina Hingis, the Indian ace has not lost a match in the last three tournaments and with the title win in Charleston (US), she now sits atop the WTA ranking table in doubles. She is only third Indian after Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi to scale the peak. "I am really excited. It's surreal feeling. It's something I dreamt in my life, I am really excited to achieve it," Sania told PTI from Charleston. She has numerous firsts to her credit in her 12-year-long tennis journey so far. A journey which is laden with moments of success and despair. Winning Grand Slams, being forced to quit singles to prolong her Pro career, there have been many such moments. So after all those ups and downs, what exactly does no 1 rank mean to her? "It means everything. It was a dream for everyone, for my family and my team. I feel privileged that I was able to achieve it and the way we did it in the last five weeks to have played our best tennis. I feel honoured and hope I go forward from here," the 28-year-old, who has three Major titles in her kitty, said. But there is "no time for cele-

F1 hopeful Daruvala impresses in single seater debut M
ONZA (ITALY): India's Formula 1 hopeful Jehan Daruvala made a successful single seater debut at the historic Monza Circuit here by finishing fourth in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup (NEC) season opener. Sixteen-year-old Daruvala was only one of four drivers making their formula car debut amongst a highly competitive grid of 30 drivers. He finished just outside the podium in Race Two over the weekend, earning him the top rookie award. A premature end to qualifying, brought by a red flag, resulted in the young Mumbaikar being caught out and having to settle for tenth on the grid for Race One. The opening race was a straight-
forward affair for the Sahara Force India Academy Driver as he started well and moved up two places to finish eighth, with Japanese driver Ukyo Sasahara winning the race. Much more excitement was in store for Race Two. The teenager made a relatively slow start from fifth on the grid and was then squeezed wide entering the chicane. Taking a careful approach to the first lap, Daruvala lost out and fell to eight before eventually settling in seventh, with rival Alex Gill on his tail. The duo fought hard and exchanged places over the next couple of laps, Daruvala using all the experience from his karting days to produce an impressive display of defensive driving.
Lack of an experienced back-up goalkeeper a worry for Sreejesh By Saumojyoti S Choudhury
I
POH (MALAYSIA): India's PR Sreejesh is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment, but the lanky Kerala lad feels that the absence of an experienced back up custodian is a major cause of worry for the team going into next year's Rio Olympics. A day after proving his mettle under the bar and helping India finish third in the just-concluded 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup here by effecting two saves in the penalty shoot-out, Sreejesh said India's back-up goalkeepers Harjot Singh
and Sushant Tirkey needed to be provided more international experience in the near future so that they could fit into the shoes when required. "The absence of a back-up goalkeeper is always a worry for us," an ever-jovial Sreejesh told PTI in an interview after being named manof-the-match in India's 4-1 win over Korea at the Azlan Shah Cup after both the teams were locked 2-2 at regulation time yesterday. "Harjot and Sushant are there and they are doing their best but they are not getting many opportunities to gain experience. They are not getting enough time on the turf
because if you see all the matches here were important for us. "Harjot only got some time to play against Canada. So they need to be given more chances in future when we play Test matches because a goalkeeper can only become better with experience," said Sreejesh, who made his debut for India way back in 2006 but became a regular in the team only in 2011. 'Sree', as he is fondly called by his teammates, also wants to do his bit in helping create a bigger pool of goalkeepers for India and plans to take up coaching once he calls it a day.

INGAPORE: Up against a team that is yet to register its first win in Group E, Ashley Westwood today said he expects a tough game when Bengaluru FC take on Warriors FC in the AFC Cup at the Jalan Besar Stadium here today. The Blues, with six points, are second on the table and a win against Alex Weaver's team would take the Indian champions a step close to getting out of a group that has Indonesian side Persipura Jayapura as leaders. "We're looking forward to what will be our fourth game in the AFC Cup. With two wins in three games, we are in a decent position on the group and coming here to get a win will only strengthen that," said Westwood on the eve of the game. A Joshua Walker penalty gave the Blues a 1-0 win when Warriors came to India last month in a commendable performance given that Westwood was without as many as four first team players who were away on national duty. "The difference from last time is that we have our internationals back and we will be better equipped with
regards to squad depth," he said. But Westwood reckoned Tuesday won't be easy as it will be the first of three games that Warriors will need to win should they give themselves any chance of making it out of the group stages. "The game in Bengaluru was tight but was one we deserved to win. While we scored from a penalty that night, we will try to score from open play tomorrow but it won't be easy. They have lost three games in this group and I'm uncertain of how they will choose to approach this game. If they have to qualify, they need to win all three games so we need to see what kind of team they put out," said Westwood. Bengaluru have been unbeaten in their last five games of the I-League and Westwood hopes to keep the run going. Warriors too have had a good run in the S League where four wins in five games keeps them second on the table. Warriors will be without Argentinian midfielder Nicolas Velez who misses the game with a suspension. Bengaluru, meanwhile, have a fully fit squad.

Harabhajan turned the clock back as he first bowled beautifilly to take 2/20 in 4 overs and then hit 64 off 2 balls with six huge sixes. "We could have had different results but we lost too many wickets up front. One early partnership could have got us out of trouble, but it did not happen. Credit to Punjab bowlers as they bowled very well with the new ball," Harbhajan said at the postmatch press conference. "It was always going to be tough when you are 25 for 4 and 46 for 5. It always became a chasing game from that point," he lamented. "It wasn't a great game for us but am glad we came very close in the end and it will give us confidence going forward.umbai's strength has always been the first six overs while bowling which are crucial,” Harbhajan added.
