9 killed, 18 seriously injured in train accident Rescue work in progress after Bengaluru City-Ernakulam Intercity express derailed near Anekal town in Bengaluru on Friday. At least 9 passengers were killed and 18 seriously injured when nine bogies derailed after the train hit a boulder that fell on the track. onsidering February 14 is celebrated as 'Valentine's Day' (V-day) which has been opposed by various groups across the country, the Zilla Parishad Education Department of Satara has decided to take note of this.

To curb awkward situations, the Department has declared that Zilla Parishad schools across Satara district have to celebrate 'Mothers Love' day today. The department has asked its schools to make the students recite poems of mother's love and also initiate events where the importance of the mother-child relationship will be stressed on.

atru-Pitru Pujan Diwas will be celebrated today in Kurla; children from across the city will be seen worshipping their parents – the children will garland their parents, perfrom aarti and also offer sweets in the presence of Subramanian Swamy, politician from the state of Tamil Nadu. After promoting February 14 as Parents’ Worship Day (Matru-Pitru Pujan Diwas), by Asaram Bapu by putting up posters and hoardings across the city by Bharitya Yuva Shakti and Yuva Heet Karni Sangh. Sangh members said this campaign has been in place since the past 10 years ever since Bapu first spoke of 'Divine Valentine's Day' in 2004.

The occasion will be graced by Maha Mandleshwar Shri Sunil Shastriji Maharaj, Ramesh Shinde (National spokesperson Hindu Jag Jagriti Samiti) and Sadhvi Taruna Didi. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend.

iving up to its reputation of rendering good patient care, the Nair Hospital Dental College yesterday celebrated the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon's Day by performing 35 wisdom tooth extraction surgeries free of charge.

It may be recalled that the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon's Day was first initiated in India on February 13, 2013 by Dr Neelam Andrade, Professor and Head of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department at Nair dental hospital.

Significantly, this day is celebrated across the world. Last two years this day is celebrated in the Nair Dental Hospital.

This year around, to mark this day the impaction camp was or-

ganised during which 10 surgical team of doctors including post graduate students and interns carried out wisdom tooth surgical extractions of 35 patients free of cost.

The patients were also provided free medicines after the surgery.

The surgeries were performed under the guidance of eminent dental surgeon and Dean of Nair Dental Dr Suhasini Nagada. Apparently Dr Nagada is also the Director, Medical Education and major hospitals of BMC. On the occasion a blood donation camp was also organised with the help of TNMC Blood Bank. All doctors, students and non-teaching staff voluntarily donated 77 units of blood.

occasion, a souvenir highlighting the activities of the trust was released recently by the Founder & Managing Trustee Mahavirprasad G. Saraf.

Mahavirprasad, 81, started the trust in 1959. During the last 55 years, the trust initiated and

accomplished innumerable welfare projects such as social service, educational endeavours, women's welfare, child development, rehabilitation of the handicapped, relief of visually challenged, health care, sports development, patronising art, literature and culture, etc.

In its first step, the trust constructed Shree Hanuman Mandir in Malad (East), built the Saraf Matru Mandir, a Dharamshala, installation of 19,952 benches at public places and efforts are still on. The contribution featured thrice in Limca Book of Records. For thirsty commuters, the trust set up 97 pyaus at railway stations, which is also a record of sorts.

For the benefit of patients, Mahavirprasad has been responsible for setting up a 10,000 sq.ft. OPD, 9,000 sq.ft. Imaging Centres and a Maternity ward at Nanavati Hospital, Burns Ward at V.N. Desai Hospital, Eye OPD, 23 Ambulances, Eye camps, and the list goes on.

In the field of education, the trust has set up the Ghanshyamdas Saraf College, Durgadevi Saraf Junior College, Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management Studies, Centre of Excellence, Learning Centre, Library and Reading Room, 2 Hostels for Adivasi Boys and Girls, Computer Centres, Balwadi, etc.

Also noteworthy is Mahavirprasad's contribution to women's welfare, social service, sports and the arts.

Mahavirprasad has received many honours. The President, VicePresident, Chief Minister and other voluntary organisations have bestowed upon him with many honours. He has been aptly selected as one of the 'Mumbai's Heroes' in a poll conducted by a city eveninger.

Socialising with neighbours can save the planet

Socialising with your neighbours leads to more planet-friendly behaviours than spending time with friends or family, a new research has claimed.

People who socialise with neighbours are more likely to 'keep up with the Joneses' on green behaviours, including water and energy conservation, buying organic fruits and vegetables, and driving less, researchers said.

"These findings suggest that our neighbours play a unique and key role in getting people to act on climate change," said study author Thomas Macias of the University of Vermont (UVM).

"Surprisingly, these green outcomes were higher with neighbours than family relatives or close friends," he said.

As per norms of the University, a college should compulsorily have a first-aid kit for its students. Depending upon the emergency of treatment, the college has to call for a doctor or rush the student to the nearest hospital. Parents have to be informed about the same, after which the parents have to

take over the process of treatment and medication.

Since the last few months, colleges have set up a medical room with a full-time doctor in the premises. Students get free treatment from these doctors. The doctors remain in the college premises from morning till evening until the college hours are over. Colleges are also planning to bring in ambulances for emergency cases.

The ADC spoke to Dr Sangeeta Kohli, S.K. Somaiya College, Vidyavihar, which has a doctor in the college campus who said, “Rather than hunting for doctors or contacting nearby hospitals, it's the best way to have a doctor in the college premises itself. This will enable swift medical treatment for the students as well as the college staff. Even when students are suddenly unwell, they can take the necessary treatment from the doctor in the college.”

Cop retracts statement Salman hit-and-run case:

n his deposition before the sessions court which is conducting the trial of the 2002 hit-and-run case allegedly involving Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, a police constable today contradicted his own statement recorded before the magistrate.

"I had taken two bottles of blood sample of the accused (Khan) in an envelope to the forensic lab," the constable said during a cross-examination by defence lawyer Srikant Shivade.

The witness had said earlier, when being examined by the Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat, that he had taken the blood sample from Bandra police station to the lab.

On CR, 72 more stns get mobile ticketing system

he mobile ticketing system is extended to 72 other stations on the Central Railway. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had launched a mobile ticketing system in December which would allow the passengers to book ticket on first or second class and renew season tickets. The system will be extended to Bhivpuri Road.

A passenger can purchase a ticket via the R-wallet which is an online wallet; the passenger will get a text message after buying and the ticket could be printed at ATVMs in any of the 72 stations on the Central and Western Railways to begin with. The commuter has to download the application from the net; open the application and sign up by giving name, mobile number

and Mumbai city upon which one time password will be sent through SMS. The user is registered and R-wallet with zero balance is created. R-wallet can be recharged at booking counters with minimum recharge of Rs.100 and maximum of Rs.5,000. The user can also log onto www.outsonmobile.indianrail.gov.in and get a ticket.

Harbour line trains to CST and Panvel from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm will be behind schedule.

eople of Mira-Bhayandar have been spared an imminent hike in existing water taxes and the imposition of new ones this year.

Reason: There is virtually no chance left for the budget reaching the General Body (GB) House for final approval before the stipulated time frame. Apart from a hike in existing water charges, the Standing Committee had mooted a proposal to levy a new 'Road Tax' in it’s property tax structure. While a hike of Rs.3 and Rs.12 per 1,000 litre water used by residential and commercial users respectively had been proposed, the new 'Road Tax' envisaged an additional 10 per cent levy to

the existing property tax structure. However the civic administration will have to wait till next year to impose any hike or levy new taxes.

According to the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act 1949, it is obligatory on the GB to take a final call on the tax hike proposal on or before February 20, so that the new tax structure can be accommodated in the MBMC’s annual budget of 2015-16. Moreover, the tax hike comes into effect only if it is ratified by the elected members. However, with less then a week left, it is virtually impossible for the civic administration to call a meeting on or before February 20, owing to lack of clear working days left.

he Anti-Child Labour wing of the National Domestic Worker’s Welfare Trust (NDWWT) has organised a 'Hope Day' programme aimed at highlighting the plight of domestic workers and to spread awareness in the context to laws enacted to guarantee minimum wages, social security and education or vocational training for this large workforce.

Around 300 youngsters will

participate in the event that is scheduled to be held at the Railway Hall in Thane (West) on Monday, Feb. 15. To protect the interests of the domestic workers, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) had on June 16, 2011, adopted Convention 189 that offers protection to domestic workers. Along with other social organizations, the NDWWT has been seeking certain amendments in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.

US President Barack Obama thinks so. He appears to believe that there is religious intolerance — a happening which would have been condemned

by Mahatma Gandhi. As many as six churches have been attacked. It is still not known who the culprits are. The police are saying they are all cases of theft. They are not prepared to accept that it is nothing but communal violence. If it were theft cases, why was it that the thieves singled out churches and not any other places of worship?

In fact, it looks like the police have not taken the attacks seriously. There has been surprising silence on the part of the government.

It was only when a school was attacked that the Prime Minister reacted. What must be noted is that this school is also run by Christians. It is not fair that reality should be totally ignored. It stares one in the face and it becomes clear that there has been some communal violence.

We have a totally secular government at the Centre and it was expected it would take some prompt action.

There are some extremist bodies like the VHP which openly preach communal violence. They have become more vocal after the BJP has come to power.

It is a fact that the government does not agree with the communal views expressed by them, but it refrains from taking any action. The mischief let loose by some communal elements must be nipped in the bud.

UCH has been written by now about why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost the Delhi assembly elections with such a dismal performance and what propelled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to a landslide victory. Not much space was given to analyze why the Congress failed to even open their account in one of the landmark battles to win Delhi as everyone including Congress stalwarts had anticipated decimation of grand old party.

The results have shaken the entire political establishment, its echoes were heard in most of the state capitals, and the discussions were not merely about who won and who lost but concerns were raised about voting patterns and voters preferences. AAP had shown the way, skillfully strategized the elections and trounced the all-powerful BJP which has been working on spreading its wings in most of the states to ensure better representation in the Rajya Sabha.

What made voters turn towards AAP, ignoring BJP's promises for better governance. The question is what changed since last Lok Sabha elections held in May 2014 when the BJP won all the seats in Delhi while it could not take even its tally to double digits. It was actually a role reversal for AAP which had miserably failed in the Lok Sabha after suddenly resigning and plunging Delhi assembly into suspended animation.

It will be foolhardy to simplify why AAP won, what factors were responsible for BJP's dismal performance and how the Congress which ruled the country for so many decades is wiped out from the Delhi assembly. There are myriad factors which are responsible for the outcome of elections which were fought as if the whole country is participating in the Delhi assembly elections. So many state assembly elections including Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir were held after the BJP formed the union government on its own under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. But no election generated so much of hype and interest as witnessed in the Delhi elections.

The BJP put in all resources it had to ensure a win in Delhi, still it lost to AAP in a very decisive manner. Surprisingly, the vote share of the BJP in Delhi has not declined proportionate to loss of seats. The decline in vote share is hardly 0.9 per cent but in terms of seats won it has lost heavily from 32 seats it has come down to three seats. Voters always think differently when they vote for the Lok Sabha and when they have to elect a state government. Any consolidation of anti-BJP votes in Bihar will be difficult to handle. The moves are already on to form an alliance of socialist parties — like Nitish Kumar led JD(U), Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD, Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP. Yes. Certainly. I am playing a triple role in a film for the first time All the three roles are challenging, especially playing a Rajasthani girl and I had to speak in a Rajasthani dialect which was difficult for me to pick up. As I am speaking Hindi fluently for the first time it was challenging for me. I play a mysterious princess who falls in love with a commoner played by Rajneish Duggal and I had to sport a tanned dark look for the film. The film is a musical thriller shot in Jodhpur and other Rajasthani locations.

Tell us something about the cast of the film.

The tall, handsome Mohit Ahlawat plays a dashing prince in the film, the talented, hunky Rajneish Duggal plays the Rajasthani lover boy and the comeback star Jas Arora plays the villain of the piece. Also Jay Bhanushali has a major role. Rahul Dev and Shivani Tanksale play other important roles.

It was really chaotic with three handsome men after you (laughs).

I am currently filming for two projects, the "dramedy" 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' earlier titled as 'Patel Rap' co-starring Ram Kapoor and Evelyn Sharma and Jasmine D'Souza's 'One Night Stand' opposite Tanuj Virwani. This month I will kickstart filming for my next entitled 'Tera Beimaan Love' alongside Rajneish Duggal which will be helmed by Rajeev Chaudhry.

adhubala was an icon of the Hindi film industry and she gained a level of success that actors only dream of.

Her beauty was light, delicate and heavenly. No wonder she was called the Venus of the Hindi film industry and she continues to mesmerise cinema lovers everywhere, years after passing away.

Madhubala's extraordinary good looks and talent were instrumental in helping her get her first lead role opposite Raj Kapoor in ‘Neel Kamal’ in 1947.

She was only 14 then. Her performance was well received by the audiences. Her 1949 release ‘Mahal’ heralded the arrival of a superstar. Her enigmatic presence and performance upstaged the seasoned Ashok Kumar in this super hit film. Madhubala acted in more than two dozen films in four years after ‘Mahal’. Many of them were big hits.

Madhubala became the biggest female star and acted with top notch actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Bharat Bhushan, etc. and worked with top directors like Kamal Amrohi in ‘Mahal’, K. Asif in

‘Mughal-e-Azam’ and Guru Dutt in ‘Mr and Mrs 55’.

In the early 50s she acted in well received films like ‘Sangdil’, ‘Tarana’, ‘Badal’ .

Shockingly in 1955 her well-publicised film ‘Amar’ with Dilip Kumar was a box office disaster giving a jolt to her reputation as a dependable actress. But she managed to give her career a fillip with the box office hit in 1958, ‘Howrah Bridge’ in which she starred opposite Ashok Kumar. The song from this film “Aayiyeh Meherbaan…” is celebrated to this day.

‘Howrah Bridge’ was followed by box office bonanzas like 'Jaali Note' with Dev Anand, 'Kala Pani’ , ‘Phagun’ with Bharat Bhushan, ‘Chalti ka Naam Gaadi’ with Kishore Kumar and ‘Barsat ki ek Raat’ opposite Bharat Bhushan again.

Madhubala acted in over 60 films in her short film career. In 2008 a postage stamp was issued by India Post to commemorate Madhubala.

Madhubala, born on Valentine’s Day, never found true love in her life. She came with a hole in her heart and left with a broken one.

Australian cricketer Shane Warne to act in Bollywood film

AFTER a successful cricket career, the Spin King, Shane Warne will be seen trying his luck in Bollywood later this year.

“There is an offer. There is someone who has something for me,” Warne told PTI while attending a Tourism Victoria event in Melbourne.

Warne said he may look into the Bollywood project later this year after the cricket season gets over.

The former cricketer was recently announced as the monarch of famous Moomba festival, an annual event of Melbourne, along with the Melbourne-raised Bollywood star Pallavi Sharda.

Warne, 45, said he had been asked about his Bollywood plans many a times but he has not finalised anything yet.

Mrunal, who is passionate about photography in real life, plays a wildlife photographer in the show. “That’s the first thing that excited me about this role.

Photography has been my passion since college days and now, I am getting a chance to use the camera on screen. I am using my own camera on the show,” he says. Shooting in the picturesque locales of Umargaon has also given Mrunal some much-needed respite from his hectic social life. elbourne: Australia's recent domination of England in one-day internationals will not have a bearing on the result of the highprofile cricket World Cup opener between the traditional rivals, feels the co-host's skipper George Bailey.

"We're happy with the way he's pulled up and really happy with his progress," Lehman said. "We're going to stick to the plan and he'll play against Bangladesh."
