mployees of the Harbour line over head equipment (OHE) maintenance team were seen climbing on the OHE poles near Mankhurd station on Tuesday, compromising the safety procedure during the maintenance of the over head equipment. At least three workers climbed on top of the OHE polls in between Mankhurd and Vashi stations in the morning peak hours. However, these workers had no safety harness or other safety belt around them for their protection. It was a typical morning peak hour, as trains trundled past after every five minutes or so. These employees, sat perched just a few inches above the live wires, that were carrying 1500 volts which can char a person to death in a moment or two, if the person comes into direct contact with the wires. The intrepid workers held the pole tightly with one had and were painting or applying some kind of liquid on the poles of OHE. It was not clear whether these were regular staffers of the Central Railway or contract workers. According to officials since the Railway Minister is from Mumbai and he is smart enough and can not be fooled easily, and also does not suffer fools easily, railway officials have been forced to pull up their socks. Gone is the lethargic attitude of the officers, who will be promptly pulled up for any lapses on their part. They now have simply no excuses, and have to perform. But in meeting their deadlines, are they compromising safety procedures? “It is criminal offence to send someone in close proximity of live wires” said a passerby who was walking along side rail track. “They did not provided hand gloves or safety harness, in case if they lose balance, what would happen,” he added. Central Railway Public Relation Officials did not respond to repeated phone calls or text message.
Even as Central Railway trains trundle past at peak hours, workers climb poles which are perilously close to live wires to ensure maintenance of Over Head Equipment.

Hum do, hamare char!
The Indian government has been successful, to some extent, in its family planning campaign. Deciding that something should be done to cut down the growing population, it produced a two-child plan. This plan was started a few years after India gained freedom. All religious communities believe that there should be no restriction on the number of children a family could have. Christanity, for instance, forbids birth control. Muslim and Hindu families ignore plans by the government and go on producing babies. If the government asks people to have only two babies, would it be wrong if some others also make observations in this regard? For instance Sadhvi Prachi and Sakshi Maharaj have said that Hindu women should have four children. Evidently, he wants to ensure that the Hindu population remains the single largest in the country. They favour even the passing of a bill in Parliament in this regard. Sakshi and Sadhvi have a right to express their opinion. They cannot however force anyone to have four babies.

f the charges are proved against those who have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) then they will not be kept in the party, remarked state BJP president Raosaheb Danve yesterday at the state party office while welcoming former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA Praveen Darekar into the party fold. Speaking to newspersons here, he said that Darekar has not been so far found guilty. He clarified that the state party leadership was under no pressure over admitting Darekar
and Vasant Geete into party fold and that the issue was debated prior to their entry into the party. Ironically enough, in October 2014, then leader of opposition in legislative council and current Minister for School Education Vinod Tawde had alleged a Rs 412 crore scam in the Darekar-held Mumbai District Cooperative Bank. The Shiv Sena had in 2013 demanded the dissolution of the bank. Besides Darekar and Geete, Danve welcomed two other former MLAs Ramesh Patil and Kashinath Mengal into the party fold. He also denied that the party was wel-
coming leaders from other parties just to achieve the one crore membership target. Asked whether the entry of Geete into the party fold was aimed at altering the numerical equations in the MNS-controlled Nashik municipal corporation, Danve remarked that nothing was impossible in politics. He said that till today the party has so far enrolled 26 lakh members and in the next phase the party will enroll another 75 lakh members. The party has plans to enroll at least 100 members per booth in the 90,000 odd polling booths in the state.
he Central government has raised the import duty on sugar from 10 to 25 per cent and announced Rs 4,000 per tonne export subsidy on raw sugar to maintain stable sugar prices in the county, stated Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Raosaheb Danve while speaking to newspersons at the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office yesterday. Meanwhile, activists of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) led by MP Raju Shetti yesterday ransacked the Sugar Commissioner office in Pune. Shetti, an ally of the BJP, has warned that the SSS activist will gherao district Guardian Minister's office in the state if the government fails to ensure payment of Fair Remuneration Price (FRP) for sugarcane growers by January 26. The union minister disclosed that the country has a surplus stock of 70 lakh metric tonnes of sugar and this year also a bumper production of 250 lakh metric tonnes is anticipated which has led to sugar prices falling in the

open market. Danve stated that the annual average consumption of sugar is around 240 lakh metric tonnes and the government also keeps a three-month buffer stock. Despite this, there will be 20 lakh metric tonnes surplus sugar stock left. He said that keeping this in mind, the government has hiked the export subsidy which will enable export of 17 lakh metric tonnes. Danve added that the government has issued notices to 107 sugar mills in the state for nonpayment of FRP to farmers. Meanwhile, in a related development, the state cabinet yesterday announced a Rs 2,000 crore relief package for drought-affected farmers from Nashik, Pune, Nagpur, Amravati and Aurangabad divisions in the state. The compensation amount will be paid to affected farmers who lost their Kharif crop this year and will be paid before January 26. In an another decision, the state cabinet approved the creation of a separate Skill Development department on the lines of the one created at the Centre.

hile the University of Mumbai (MU) has been recruiting its administrative officers with maximum experience of working in the industry, it has been quite lax in terms of appointing lecturers. Just after finishing their Post Graduation (PG) course, students have been appointed to teach the very next PG batch in the University departments. Some students have claimed that these 'freshers' are unable to provide the right guidance. Yesterday, the ADC visited various departments of the University at the Kalina Campus during the lecture hours. When verified with the department and the current year students, it was known that these teachers had been appointed as visiting faculties only three months after they completed
their PG course in the same department. A student told the ADC, “When we have doubts related to the industry practices, these new teacher are unable to give us proper answers. These teachers were our seniors a few months ago and suddenly they are our teachers. The University should rather appoint experienced teachers.” Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of MU is still under the scanner of the High Court for being ineligible for the post of Vice-Chancellor. The ADC spoke to Dr M A Khan, who said, “As per the norms of the UGC, a candidate having first class in Post Graduate is eligible to teach on temporary basis as an assistant Professor. We also take feedback from students about their teaching and then take a decision upon whether to continue as teachers or not.”
BJP to go with Sena in Thane, Palghar ZP polls
E
ven as Congress and NCP have forged an alliance for upcoming elections to Palghar and Thane Zilla Parishads, BJP on Tuesday said it will tie up with Shiv Sena for sure soon. "We are sure of sweeping the upcoming ZP polls. I don't think either of our opponents (Congress and NCP) stands a chance against us. BJP will have an alliance with Shiv Sena. If it doesn't happen now, it is bound to happen later," BJP MLA Vishnu Savara, who rep-
resents Vikramgadh seat in neighbouring Palghar district, told PTI. He said BJP has asked its local leaders to finalise intricacies of the proposed alliance. The polls for newly-created ZP in Palghar, and for Thane ZP will be held on January 28. Both ZPs will have 57 members each. Meanwhile, a BJP leader said on the condition of anonymity that Congress leader and former minister Rajendra Gavit is in talks with BJP to switch over ahead of polls.

Vakola police re-open 10-month-old hit-n-run case By Zuber Ansari
cle on the Western Express Highway (WEH) in April last year. She was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. The identity of the vehicle and its driver, though, remain a mystery. Leena's sister Jesita Joseph Milar has been following this case and has her suspicions over the police investigation. To ensure justice for Leena's untimely death, her seven brothers and three sisters have taken it upon themselves to investigate the death, parallel to the police investigation. The man who had phoned the control room after the accident, Francis D’souza, said that he did not know which vehicle knocked Leena down. CCTV footage from Kherwadi Junction to Dahisar has been checked, but since the cameras are installed in the opposite direction, little of use has come to light.

lmost after 10 months, the Vakola Police has re-opened an unsolved hit-and-run case of a 52-year-old woman after they received an order from their top officials to probe into the case and arrest the vehicle driver. Police Inspector (PI) Jeevan Kharat has circulated a public notice to various people in the locality. The public appeal notice states that anyone having any information regarding the accident, vehicle or diver of the vehicle should come forward and contact the police control room or Vakola Police station. According to PI Kharat, they have reopened the Leena Ribeiro case but haven't yet got any clue or lead. Leena Ribeiro, a resident of Kurla, was knocked down by a speeding vehi-
RUN & NAB... Continued from pg 1 « believed to be drug addicts and difficult to arrest after committing the crime, they zip off on their bikes at high speeds of more than 120kmph and making it virtually impossible for the cops to keep up with them. The snatchers also target places where it is easy for them to escape, like Western and Eastern Express highways, several narrow lanes like in Matunga, etc. ACSU was formed under the Mumbai police special crime branch unit and is currently being headed by Police Inspector Pramod Kokate. The unit comprises a few Assistant Inspectors, 20 constables and several policemen. At present, after much hemming and hawing, the unit was allocated an office on the third floor of
the Sahar police station. The staff has no work except for collecting FIR and evidence (CCTV footage) from local police stations where chain snatching takes place. The staff just collects this data and files it up. Till now not even single case has been detected, so how can work on curbing chain snatching begin! Not having a single vehicle of their own, also adds considerably to the ACSU's woes, as the understaffed unit has to use public transport to do the run of almost 93 police stations in the city, which report about chain snatchings. Besides not having its own landline number, the unit has no access to internet. This can reflect on the unit's chain reaction of no success, especially when the cops have been told to run and nab the criminals, who themselves operate on high-powered bikes!

hanks to the inefficiency of the Palghar district police, robbers seem to be striking at will in the VasaiVirar region. Five masked men armed with choppers and iron rods broke into a bungalow in Naigaon near Vasai, mounted a brutal attack on an elderly couple before decamping with Rs 80,000 cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs. According to the police, the crime was reported at around 2 am on Tuesday at Anthony Paul Cerejo’s (80) bungalow 'Rita Smriti Niwas' in Umela village. The miscreants broke
into the bungalow and mounted a violent assault on Anthony and his 73-year-old wife Agnes, following which they ransacked the entire household before escaping with cash and the gold ornaments. The couple’s son and his family remained asleep on the first floor, as it took just 10 minutes for the robbers to execute their ghastly act. The brutal incident which comes amidst a spate of robbery-cum-attacks on people especially senior citizens in the region has not only shocked local residents but has put a serious question mark on the efficiency of the Palghar district police.

According to the BMC's trenching guidelines, a dug up footpath or road is expected to be restored to its original condition within seven days after the trenching activity is over. However, due to shoddy jobs by contractors, roads and pavements remain in pitiable conditions causing inconvenience to people. An internal audit in 2013 by a BMC-appointed Swiss-based auditor, SGS India Pvt Ltd, revealed that freshly-laid roads worth Rs 550 crore were damaged by poor filling.
Amin had been experiencing slight pain in his chest but we used to take him to a local doctor and that medication used to give him relief. We did not take the pain seriously. But when its frequency started increasing, our doctor suggested that we get an Xray and then a CT scan done. It was through these tests that we got to know that there was a growth in his chest. Then we started looking for affordable places for his treatment and that took some time. Then finally, when his condition started worsening, we got him here and went ahead with the surgery as suggested by the doctor.” According to Dr Sanganeria, the case could have been less complex had Amin been brought to him earlier. “Amin was brought to us 15 days ago with a visible bulge on his chest and symp-
toms of breathlessness but he had been having issues since the last four to five months. The size of the tumour doubled in three months' time. From 9.9 cm it grew to 18 cm. This tumour would probably be around nine months to one-yearold. Had this surgery not happened now, it could have spread to other parts of the body as well. It could also have been fatal,” said Dr Sanganeria. Amin, who will soon be discharged, would have to undergo protocol chemotherapy for six to eight months and would have to do regular follow-ups after the chemotherapy sessions, informed Dr Sanganeria. “The need for radiation would be decided on the basis of the progress Amin makes,” said Dr Sanganeria. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Pak should do more against terror: US U
S Secretary of State John Kerry has said that Pakistan should do more to contain terror, target all terror groups and maintain peace along the border with India. That is an advice which Pakistan is unlikely to take. Pakistan needs terrorists in its proxy war against India. They are all trained by the army. In fact, terrorists are regarded as brave patriots. Will Pakistan get rid of folks who are involved in Kashmir operations? The terrorists are all trained by the army. It is only the Taliban which is the enemy of Pakistan. The Taliban terrorists are the only ones Pakistan will fight. Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and other terror leaders will never be punished by Pakistan. They have been holding bogus trials of top terrorists and they have no intention of punishing them. Hafiz Saeed is making wild speeches in public against India. He is saying that Pakistan should wage a war over Kashmir. Pakistan is behind all terrorists who are advocating war against India. They are allowed to roam free. The government and the army do not consider them as terrorists. The latest on the terror boat is that India siding with Taliban and is involved in joint attacks against Pakistan. This is, of course, is a bogus charge. India has never been involved with an terror group operating in Pakistan.

change in the upper echelons of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is expected in March with significant implications for both the Modi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The self-effacing general secretary Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi will bow out to make way for a younger, more assertive and politically astute leader in Dattatreya Hosabale. It’s not just a generational shift, as parivar circles maintain, although Hosabale at 59 is eight years younger than Joshi. The appointment is indicative of a paradigm shift in RSS thinking. For the first time, the Sangh will have as its executive head a man with a keen nose for politics. Reports of the expected announcement at the March meeting of the Sangh’s top decision making body, the Pratinidhi Sabha, has sent a frisson of anticipation through BJP circles which are agog with speculation on what

a formidable custodian of RSS interests. Modi is known to drive hard bargains through skillful negotiations, but Hosabale is said to be more than a match for him. Unlike past RSS leaders who reveled in deep silences, Hosabale is articulate and has no hesitation in calling a spade a spade. He has the added advantage of knowing most top BJP leaders and MPs personally, having guided the affairs of the party’s student wing, ABVP, for two decades. It will be interesting to see how the Hosabale-Modi equation evolves. One thing is certain. With a political man at the top, the RSS may not be the same.
NITI Aayog: Debroy seeks answers from Modi govt
T
HE appointments of Indian-American economist Arvind Panagariya as head of the newly-created NITI Aayog and fellow economist Bibek Debroy as a full-time member, have sent ripples of surprise through BJP circles. Consider the choice of Panagariya. Apart from the fact that his pro-market economic philosophy is likely to put him in the firing line of the RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch, BJP insiders recall that Narendra Modi had overlooked him for the post of chief economic advisor in the finance ministry just three months ago. It seems Panagariya was considered for the job and even met Modi in this connection. But ultimately, Modi chose another US-based Indian economist, Arvind Subramanian, inArati R. Jerath stead. In fact, BJP insiders say that Modi was particularly impressed with Subramanian it means for government and party. On the and picked him over Panagariya and others face of it, Hosabale’s elevation is good news who were lobbying for the post. As for Debroy, BJP circles wonder how the for Modi. Knowledge of truth is a secret science T
HE secret of the self can be found by analyzing oneself. By studying the self one will find that the body is only a cover over one’s real self. But by a still more profound study one will find that even one’s mind is a cover over one's real self. As soon as one finds this out, one will become independent of the body as a means to live. Also, one will become independent of the mind to live. ‘But’, one might ask, ‘if there is no body, then what is life?’ One asks this because man has limited himself by experiencing life through the body, and has not tried to experience life without its help. When man is not conscious of his body, then he is conscious of his mind. When the eyes are open he is looking at things before him. When his eyes are closed then he is pondering upon what his mind has gained. In both cases he is dependent either upon his body or upon his mind to live, and this de-
pendence makes the soul limited. It not only limits it, but it makes the soul mortal. In reality the soul is not mortal, but if the soul believes in mortality it is just like being mortal. The teaching of Jesus Christ, from beginning to end, is to rise above mortality, to find
MATTER & SPIRIT out about life, to learn the art, the science, of living. All the scriptures, every philosopher and mystic, teach this. And why do they teach this? Because if there is one thing undesirable it is mortality, death. No sane person would ask for death. Desire for death is not a natural desire, and even when the mind is craving for death the soul is longing for life. The soul is living. It is life itself. Death is

Fresh veggies from PM’s garden
R
SS full-timers who live and eat in their Delhi headquarters at Jhandewalan are quite thrilled with Narendra Modi. Apparently, he has been plying them with fresh vegetables from the kitchen garden at the PM’s Race Course Road residence. An insider said that a car from the PM’s residence is frequently spotted in Jhandewalan ferrying vegetables to the community kitchen in the Keshav Kunj building. Being a bachelor, Modi has little use for the enormous quantity of vegetables plucked every day. Apparently, the size of the kitchen garden was considerably enlarged during Manmohan Singh’s ten years on Race Course Road. BJP circles wonder whether the former PM used to send over baskets of fresh vegetables to Sonia Gandhi like Modi does to his 10 Janpath!
Mission 36+ for Delhi polls?
T
HE success of its Mission 272+ in the Lok Sabha elections encouraged the BJP to coin a Mission 145+ for the Maharashtra assembly elections in October and a Mission 44 for the J&K elections a month later. But the failure of the last two missions has prompted a rethink in the party on setting a target number for the upcoming Delhi polls. At a recent internal meeting, the issue was discussed in detail. Should the party announce a Mission 60 or a Mission 50 or a Mission 40? One cautious person suggested that instead of hyping it up, the BJP should make it Mission 36+. This is the number for a simple majority in the 70-member Delhi assembly. The proposal was immediately shot down as being too defeatist. It was felt that a number like 36 would be an admission that Arvind Kejriwal has spooked the BJP in Delhi and the party is unsure of its performance. The BJP had a glorious run in 2014, winning every election that year. But 2015 has dawned with uncertainties looming on the horizon. something foreign to it. It does not know death. That is why even the smallest insect protects itself in every way. It does not wish to die. What we call death is our impression of a change. Life is subject to change, and death is only a change of life. But making people believe in immortality and making them rise above the fear of death should be done gradually and not suddenly, for otherwise this knowledge would frighten a person more than death itself. It is for that reason that the knowledge of this truth was made a mystical, secret science. Otherwise there would have been no reason for withholding something as precious as that knowledge from one's fellow men. When a person is awakened suddenly he suffers a great shock, physically and mentally, and it takes him a long time to recover. It is the same with all spiritual truths. This is why there are initiations and a vow of secrecy. One cannot place a dinner before a newborn infant. He must first be fed with milk. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2015
THE bugle has been sounded for the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls around a year after the capital had its last elections. Much has changed in these 13 months: there is a new government, armed with a formidable majority at the Centre, led by Narendra Modi, AAP is no longer a nervous debutante and Congress wears a distinctly exhausted look. And yet the Delhi elections are not without significance – not least because the contest pits two contrasting but charismatic figures against each other. Devoid of a strong local leadership, BJP is banking on the PM's appeal to win the day once again. Modi has already shown that in states like Haryana and Maharashtra his national image can offset faction-ridden local units and pull in youthful inspirational voters. In Delhi though, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal poses a different challenge: he is easily the most recognisable face in Delhi politics and The Delhi elections are less than a month has shown a capacity to punch away and parties have begun above his weight – by his energetic preparations in full swing for their campaigning and communication respective victories. through innovative means on social media and publicised dharnas. just 49 days, losing substantial Kejriwal has already paid a heavy middle-class support as a result. price for resigning from office in But in lower income groups and

Status quo AS per some press reports, the Samajwadi Party is not very enthusiastic about the formation of the proposed Janata Parivar, and for obvious reasons. First is that the party is almost non-existent in Bihar. Secondly, its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav nurses a prime ministerial ambition. In case of the Parivar getting substantial number of seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, MSY perceives a threat from the two Bihari strong men viz Lalu and Nitish Kumar as serious contenders for the coveted post. It will all depend on who secures the maximum number of MPs among the three leaders. Till that, it will only be status quo. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali
Make in India THE 'Make in India' slogan given by the PM is basically aimed at foreign investors to set up their production units in India to produce branded products to be exported to other countries. A majority of the exporting countries assemble parts manufactured. In the past, there was a enormous demand for Indian goods like silk and woolen clothes, handicrafts of metal, wood and stone in other countries. Factors required for production like infrastructure, labour and raw material are fundamentally required to be rationalised. Cheap labour is available in plenty in villages, but they need to be trained to produce goods so as to stand in competition in the international market. These villages also need to be provided with conducive infrastructure. India will have to create an ambience of liking of Indian people for Indigenous goods so that import of goods from other countries too is reduced. — K V Raman, Malad

Having amended the laws the least they could have done is to award Dhyan Chand and Vishwanathan Anand simultaneously. In fact Dhyan Chand deserves the award much more than Sachin and much earlier than Sachin. International Hockey Federation has 128 members whereas cricket is played in only 16 countries including minnows. Likewise, World Chess Federation FIDE has currently around 150 countries as its members. This makes Vishy's achievement all the more monumental when you compare to cricket which is played in only 16 countries. Moreover, its an individual sport unlike cricket and Anand has won the world championship not once not twice but five times. And now will the Indian
The Bharat Ratna has largely remained a controversial topic in recent times, owing to the people who have received it and the ones who have been kept away from it. Government wake up and award Vishy with the Bharat Ratna, one of the most deserving candidates? — Chandrakant Kotian, via email

he Puncham pyao demolition, which is doing the rounds across media platforms, is allegedly not the only structure which is obstructing the pedestrians. As per a report dated September 18, 2014, sent by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee to deputy municipal corporation (Zone I), the removal/relocation of several other structures were also suggested. The list of the structures to be removed/relocated comprises visitor parking of the Bombay Gymkhana, Godrej Pavilion garden and the Fashion street and others near Dhobi Talao. The ADC has access to the report. Advocate Abha Singh, who is representing the Puncham NGO in the Sessions Court, who constructed the Pyao, told the ADC, “Today in the court, I raised this point that as per the Mumbai heritage conservation committee report, Puncham pyao is not the only one to obstruct the pedestrians, but there are almost 10 other similar structures which are obstructing the pedestrians and the removal/relocation of all those structures were mentioned in the report. I raised this issue in the court as to why the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is not touching these structures. Are these structures too powerful to be demolished/relocated? Or because these structures mean money and that's why nobody dares to touch it! And the pyao which is serving such a noble cause is bearing the brunt.” She further said, “Is it really sad Maria. that the pyao which is meant for public convenience and is used regularly is facing this while similar other structures remain untouched. I guess the BMC wants everyone to buy water bottles.” The matter of demolition of the pyao is under trial at the Sessions court. The BMC is yet to file a reply to the application moved by advocate Singh stating that the BMC commissioner is not authorised to demolish the structure. The corporation has the right to do it after the corporators pass a resolution for the
same. Now the case has been adjourned to February 11. Also, advocate Singh has said in the court that if such structures (which are gifted to people by a party other than the government/municipality) are demolished, the corporation is liable to give a compensation to that party. The ADC made several attempts to contact BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte and deputy municipal corporation (Zone I) Vasant Prabhu, but there was no response. The civic body claims that the
area is becoming filthy and that people are complaining about the dirt around the fountain. The water fountain, inaugurated in 2004 by Gopinath Munde who was then a Member of Parliament, has been serving people for the past 10 years. In 2004, Puncham, a child aid organisation, approached the BMC with a plan to build water fountains in the city. The BMC agreed to the plan of building the fountain in front of the Bombay Gymkhana and several other locations in the city.

‘Education must stimulate questioning’ “At Sophia, we used to take unsupervised exams and NO ONE cheated or copied,” says Shubhada Maitra, Professor at TISS, Centre for Health and Mental Health, School of Social Work, TISS, Mumbai Campus
I
did my BSc, MA in Social Work with specialisation in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and PhD in Social Work. I studied at Sophia College for Women, Mumbai and TISS, Mumbai. Sophia College had an old world, colonial style of architecture, while TISS was rustic, mostly single-storeyed buildings in stone and wood, with lots of greenery, huge French windows in the classroom, stone walls, high ceiling, wooden chairs with a writing board on the right side, one doesn't see those kind of chairs any more. My first day in college was great fun and filled with anticipation. I made friends quickly. The atmosphere was formal, yet warm. The professors were learned, formal, distant, and great role models. Studies were easy, no cramming; the teaching was good, so one could do well in the exams. I travelled by BEST bus to Sophia College and hitch-hiked while returning as buses would arrive jam-packed in the evening at Peddar Road. The TISS bus would pick up faculty and students from Tilak Bridge Dadar, in the morning and would also drop us back. It made two trips each in the morning (8.15 am and 9.15 am
and 4.30 pm and 5.45 pm). College life was great fun, I had a blast. While I was in Sophia, we went to theatres like Sterling, New Excelsior, New Empire and Eros in South Bombay. We would hang out in the college canteen, at Breach Candy (there was a place called Tutkuks), Charni Road Chowpaty, Anando milk bar, Chinese Room and Flora restaurants and Sundance Cafe near Eros theatre. We would also spend a lot of time in each other's (friends) homes. My friend circle was small, but very close, we were about four to five friends in the group, all women in both colleges. College life comes
with its own set of anecdotes. In Sophia, we had a new professor who joined our department. He was young and we took it upon ourselves to introduce him to the college. In the process we played many pranks on him in the laboratory while doing experiments. During the monsoons, we would fold up our jeans, close the umbrella and walk from Sophia College to Haji Ali, or Worli Sea Face or Marine Drive or Malabar Hill. The fun was in getting drenched to the bone and having a hot meal afterwards. Also at Sophia, we used to take unsupervised exams and NO ONE cheated or copied. I often won-

der why that cannot be done today. At TISS, our group of students along with two faculty members had gone on a study tour and all our bags were stolen on the ST bus on our journey back to Mumbai. That was tragic and hilarious at the same time. I had an infuriating moment when a college professor claimed he had fallen in love with me. I gave him a piece of my mind, saying how a professor could talk like that to a student and then we had to be face to face the whole next year. We survived but I can still remember my anger. Now, so many years later, I laugh about it. The TISS education prepared me for life. I came from a typical Maharashtrian middleclass family with both parents working outside the home. So the atmosphere at home was fairly liberal with free and open communication. Yet, I had neither seen, nor been exposed to harsher realities of poverty, deprivation, exploitation and so on. Being in the Social Work programme in TISS developed sensitivity in me about social issues and those marginalised. Our salaries are as per Standard UGC scales. India itself is so diverse, there is no 'one' experience of studying in India. For example being in Bombay or Delhi is very different from studying in Kolhapur or Ranchi. However, I think the exposure to any education and educational system that stimulates questioning, thinking, reflexivity, empathy, critiquing around issues of social justice, equality, empowerment and marginalisation, is bound to result in a different kind of worldview and therefore the nature of engagement with social issues. If western education develops in you an acceptance of difference and diversity and respect for this difference, it is good. If studying abroad helps us to look after our own immediate needs, give our best in a competitive world (but not become competitive in turn!), develop a thirst for knowledge and become disciplined in our work and everyday life, I would say, that exposure is good. However, personal ambition taking precedence over ambition for your profession is problematic. Also, intolerance for those less 'talented' than us is arrogance. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

obel laureate Dr John Robin Warren (Adelaide, Australia) visited the students at Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research for a straight from the heart interaction where he shared his dictums for creating excellence, an embedded integral in professional pursuits cutting across domains and specialisations. Warren was in town for the 102nd Indian Science Congress at University of Mumbai. Warren was bestowed with the Noble honour for his work in Physiology (Medicine) in the year 2005 for his discovery on the ‘bacterium Helicobacter pylori’ and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer diseases. Warren on a request from Welingkar decided to share a few of his collections and from the journey of his life as he went ahead chasing his convictions and passion with perseverance. While addressing the young MBAs at WeSchool, through a presentation aptly titled ‘Heliobactor – the ease and difficulty of a new discovery’, Dr Robin Warren had the following words of wisdom to share, “When we started on our journey, scientific and technologi-
<<Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe and Dr J Robin Warren at WeSchool cal tools were not advanced. Science believed that bacteria couldn’t grow in stomach, good biopsies were rare, and there were no clinical specimens. Gastritis was not understood well by the medical fraternity. But we refused to be discouraged, kept experimenting with determination and after years of dedicated hard work, discovered the bacterial strain. It was a quite a miracle and opened new vistas in
discovering treatments for Gastritis and peptic ulcers for making the life of human beings more productive and healthy.” The students and faculty listened in rapt attention as a lesson in scientific creativity and innovation unfolded in front of their eyes. Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool, said, “Irrespective of the area of one’s pursuits the basics of excellence
remain the same - dedication, sagacity, commitment and perseverance. “Warren’s expertise focuses on Medicine, yet the axioms of a life socially impactful are applicable to all domains, may it be medicine or business. Such interactions with global performers give a much valuable insight into the students making them more global and futuristic in their outlook. Interaction with a scientist of such a great stature who has dedicated his life to research for a healthy global society inspires us to take forward the agenda of social.” The students had their share of questions. A relaxed Warren enjoyed every part of it as he happily responded to the volley of questions showered upon him by the young minds. “Qualities of consistency, strong belief and patience are critical for breakthrough innovation to happen irrespective of the field or sector that one is working in. Interacting with Dr Warren was indeed an inspiring and learning experience for us,” shared one of the students from WeSchool.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2015
Hundred years ago, Sir Earnest Shackleton undertook an epic voyage to Antarctica where his entire crew of 28 men survived four months, awaiting rescue. Last week, 66 students set off on a similar journey for the Elephant Island on the Students On Ice – Antarctic expedition and amongst them was young Zareen Cheema. In a fascinating interview with Naressa Coutinho, she recounts her amazing experience on the recent expedition and her dreams of colonizing Mars
“A
s kids you often looked forward to bedtime stories, alive with fairies, princesses and unbridled adventure but dad never told us any, instead he’d enthral us, no less, with heroic tales of explorers, sea-farers and momentous discoveries,” recalls Zareen. She eagerly drifts past memories of her first telescope erected on their terrace, and how she’d spend hours gazing up at the sky with childlike curiosity. Her probing mind finally pulled against its restraints when she saw photographs of the Aurora Australis. Only a decade later and here she is, just back from an edifying Antarctic Expedition, already working on an Independent Research Study on the use of a remote sensing technology called Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), in understanding the phenomenon of the Aurora Australis. Zareen Cheema (19) is currently pursuing Mechanical Engineering at Cummins College of Engineering, Pune and was the only Indian student to be selected for the ‘Students on Ice – Antarctic Expedition 2014’ that took place from December 25 to January 8. “I was deeply inspired by Polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackelton and I was confident that this educational expedition to the icy continent with leading scientists, polar researchers, enthusiasts and students from across the world would enhance my scientific spark,” explains Zareen. The dream expedition to Antarctica would cost a staggering sum of USD 14,500, which Zareen was determined to collect on her
own. She started a campaign on Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding site and managed to cover just about half of the total amount through the five-month-long sponsorship. “There were days when nobody would contribute and it would get frustrating,” admits Zareen, speaking on the mechanics of crowdfunding. “I began reading numerous articles on crowdfunding. It all depends on the online flow of traffic to your page. I used various social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn; wrote extensively to spread the word amongst friends and family; and even got friends with popular blogs to write about the expedition.” She went on to approach her college, school and various other organisations for financial assistance and her plea was well received. In December, she finally flew to Toronto and joined the Expedition group as they made their way to Buenos Aries, Argentina and onward to Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world, and from there careful navigation through Drake’s passage towards Antarctica. Through numerous educational stops, an abandoned Whaling station, a dormant volcano, workshops, hikes and presentations, the extraordinary team of 66 high school and university students along with historians, artists and explorers made a transformative and life-changing journey. With Antarctica, Zareen is happily crossing out her sixth continental conquest and she greedily eyes Australia, the last in her earthly
bucket list of world travel. “My favourite city in the world,” chirps Zareen, “would have to be Ushuaia, Argentina. The ice-capped mountains, the little ships dotting the Beagle channel and the adorable penguins are images I will never be able to forget and maybe someday, Tomas Ferrari, Consul General of Argentina in Mumbai said, “To have young minds like Zareen Cheema display such genuine passion for the environment and issues concerning global warming, is truly amazing. We are glad she had this opportunity to visit Argentina and complete the Antarctic Expedition.” I’ll be able to buy a house there.” She owes most of these worldwide travels to educational conferences, scholarships and space projects. Like the time she was invited to Washington DC to attend the NASA/NSS International Space Development Conference or the time she was selected to be the only Indian for the European Space Camp in Andenes, Norway, where she had to test, build and launch a rocket. She won the second prize at the NASA International Space Settlement Design Contest, not once but twice in 2012 and 2013, following her newfound interest in the human colonization of Mars in Class X and her
admiration for Stephen Hawking. Zareen Cheema is now gearing up for the second round of selections to the ‘One-way Mars trip’. She is the youngest of 705 candidates for the Mars-one manned mission where the first permanent human colony will be set up. “I have no second thoughts and I owe it to my family who has supported me at every step,” she says. Mars-One is a nonprofit organization that aims to send four people to the Red Planet in 2024 and subsequent groups in later years. Those chosen will undergo rigorous training in simulators and will develop skills to adapt and survive on Mars. The criteria for selection required applicants to be above the age of 18. Lucky for Zareen, she turned 18 just days before the application deadline. Besides technical knowledge and adeptness, applicants will be judged on their passion to explore, adapt and socialise in the new world. “It is not about the number of continents I visit and it doesn’t matter if I get selected or not for this grand outer space experience but it is in simply knowing that my passion and dreams will lead me somewhere, somehow and that, I’m confident of. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to my family, my sponsors – St Mary’s School, Cummins College of Engineering, Dr KN Modi Foundation, Rotary Club of Poona, to the Consulate of Argentina in Mumbai and to all who have supported and encouraged me to reach for the stars!” concludes Zareen.

By Mohammed Suratwala, Hinduja college
Other than that, they are called names like ‘faggot’, ‘dyke’ which are socially unacceptable, I mean what if I call you names like ‘Nymphos’. We are all human beings and we all have equal rights to live as you do. All differences aside, people are so obsessed about their sexuality that even if they as much as feel a little bit ‘touchy’ by the same sex they start passing comments.
M
y topic today is quite sensitive as well as queer in nature. I always wanted to write on something like this, because people have become fastpaced in technology, lifestyle, culture and almost everything. But the moment a word is uttered about being ‘gay’ or even ‘sex’ the entire conversation becomes redundant. People are so careful and orthodox while saying these words as if they are going to have a seizure. And the stereotypes! First of all, they have this theory that ‘being a gay’ is a 'stain' on society as if peeing in public or having drugs or eve-teasing and even rape are godly actions. Being a gay or a lesbian is quite normal for me, a man loves a man, and a woman loves a woman. What’s wrong in that? After all, we all are human beings and God created us to mate, there were no terms and conditions applied to that (Please spare me the Adam and Eve logic) Human beings are the ones with the brains (useful of course); we know what we are doing and with God’s will we have invented so many things, built so many things and we have made this world a better place to live in. Then why are we averse while choosing our life partners? We can do whatever we want and obviously we have decided something before choosing who is right for us, we are not sodomites. Excuse me for my profanity, I got carried away with my emotions. But seriously, this has to stop. Society looks down upon these people with
In a developing country like India, the problems faced by such a marginal population can be resolved when such situations are objected to: 1. ‘Coming out’, only to be rejected by family members and friends. 2. Being bullied or taunted by schoolmates on a daily basis. 3. Homophobic jokes or harassment in the workplace. 4. Being threatened or bashed when out on the street. 5. Hiding a part of yourself in social situations for fear of being rejected or marginalised. 6. Feeling guilt and shame about your sexuality in the face of negative messages being delivered by the society around you. shame and disrespect, even some of the so-called youngsters who blab about being equal, humiliate them and make fun of them. Besides, they are not accepted by their religion and thus creates tension between them. Another stereotype for these people is that they love to wear leather, they walk differently, they talk differently, and as soon as they come between a group of their friends, there is awkwardness all around. Is it contagious guys? They are making love with the same sex, that's all.

The viewing will run over a 12 month period in monthly editions. The videos for the month of January focus on repetition and erasure. The works are meditative and offer different perspectives on the nature of cyclical gestures as acts of renewal and gradual disappearance. suddenly changes his plans and takes the unknown road where Travis spots them. In his 4WD, the two drivers take road rage to the extreme trying to force each other to crash at high speed. The chase is exciting to watch. The cars speed into bumpy terrain that ultimately leads them to crash land over a small hill overlooking a stationary prison van. The two cars go head on into the police van which hits another car with a baby in the back that has stopped to help. The collision involving all four vehicles leaves many who were out of their cars dead and the others injured. The multi car pileup at the desert intersection has

UCKNOW/NEW DELHI: On a day when the US asked Pakistan to fight all terror groups, India on Tuesday warned that 'pro-active' steps will be taken to deal with the 'proxy war' supported by the neighbouring country and said a 'difference' will be seen in the next six months. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar while sending a tough message to Pakistan over ceasefire violations and infiltrations by militants also said it will be ensured that the 'enemy' doesn't show any more interest in proxy war. At the same time, he said India wanted peace with Pakistan. Parrikar's remarks came even as Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh accused Pakistan of continuing to support 'proxy war' in Jammu & Kashmir despite suffering casualties due to terror on its soil, reports PTI. Asking Pakistan to target all militant groups, US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in Islamabad that terror outfits like LeT, Taliban and the Haqqani network posed a threat to countries in the region like India and also to the US. "On proxy war, the gov-
ernment is very clear about what is happening. We have taken a stand and though I will not like to tell you what is the exact action we are taking...You will be able to see the difference by the time summer gets over. In the next 6 months you will see the difference in actual figures," Parrikar told a press conference in Lucknow. Stating that "one difference" is already visible, he said the number of terrorists neutralised so far this year is about 65 to 70 per cent more than that in last year. "We want peace with our neighbours, but if there is an attempt for proxy war, we will take some proactive steps. What kind of proactive steps cannot be revealed in a press conference. "But, I can assure you that we will ensure that enemy doesn't show any interest in proxy war or the interest comes down," he added. To a question on dialogue with Pakistan, the Defence Minister said, "India's position is very clear. The stand taken by the Ministry of External Affairs is clear. If any dialogue has to be done with Pakistan, they should first stop ceasefire violation and intrusion of terrorists."

He said that cases have been lodged in Malihabad, Hasanganj, Aurus and two persons have
been detained. Calling for action, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that state government should thoroughly probe the deaths and initiate strict action against those found guilty. "The state government should thoroughly probe deaths due to spurious liquor and initiate strict action against those found guilty," Singh told reporters. The hooch tragedy occurred in Kharta and other villages in Malihabad area of Lucknow and Talasarai village in Hasanganj area of Unnao district yesterday.
"If it does not stop, then dialogue alone will not bring a solution. That should be very clear, intention expressed should be reflected in performance and delivery on the
ground," he said. In Delhi, the Army Chief said, "Pakistan is supporting proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir despite suffering casualties within their country". Gen
Singh said one will have to "wait and watch" if Pakistan Army has had a change of heart since the gruesome terror attack on an Army school in Peshawar last month.

World prices have been falling since June but the pace of the slide accelerated in November when the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided to maintain its production unchanged at 30 million barrels per day. Analysts say that richer OPEC members like the UAE have been ready to accept the price fall in the hope that it will force higher-cost shale producers out of the market. “We cannot continue to be protecting a certain price,” UAE Energy Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei said. “We have seen the oversupply, coming primarily from shale oil, and that needed to be corrected,” he told participants in the Gulf Intelligence UAE Energy Forum in Abu Dhabi. Oil prices continued their slide towards six-year lows in Asian trade on Tuesday after Brent crude closed below $50 a barrel the previous day for the first time since April 2009.

I
nvestigations against black money holders in Swiss bank accounts, known as the HSBC list, have been put on a fast-track as the CBDT has asked tax sleuths to quickly gather all foreign-based evidences in these cases and render final action by March-end. The latest development relates to the disclosure of names by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money in the HSBC's bank branch in Geneva, provided by the French government to India few years back, in which names of 628 Indians had figured with a total amount of Rs 4,479 crore being held in them. "All I-T investigation units have been asked to process foreign requests for exchange of information on these cases by February 15.
These cases are getting time-barred with the end of the current financial year on March 31. The CBDT has issued latest directives to speed up probe in these cases and quickly send them across to foreign shores," PTI quoting sources privy to the development said. They said the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body of the I-T department, decided to fasten these cases as the probe against these black money holders will not hold legal value after March 31, 2015 as that it is the upper limit stipulated under law to prosecute and initiate legal action in these cases which pertain to 2007-08 fiscal. Sources said the exclusive Exchange of Information (EOI) unit under the foreign tax wing of the CBDT has asked the I-T department
to specifically focus on cases getting "time barred by March 31" so that legal requests could be sent abroad to countries like the US, UK, Switzerland and Gulf. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier said that proceedings in these cases will be completed by March 31, 2015. The SIT headed by retired Supreme Court judge M B Shah along with Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat had also stated in their last report submitted to the apex court in December last that these cases will be brought to their logical and legal conclusion by the said deadline. Under the larger ambit of the probe against black money, the tax department and other agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are also probing cases involving unaccounted wealth totalling Rs 14,957.95 crore in the country.
Call For Monetary Easing Gets Shriller Inflation, factory output data warrant monetary easing in 2015, say experts By A Business reporter
B
oth inflation and factory output data reinforce the case for monetary easing this year and the Reserve Bank of India may go for a policy rate cut before the February budget, say experts. "Both inflation and growth data reinforce the case for monetary easing this year. We expect 50 bps in rate cuts in 2015," PTI quoting HSBC Chief India Economist Pranjul Bhandari said. Echoing similar sentiments, Citi-
group India Economist Rohini Malkani said the latest inflation data and benign outlook strengthens the case for monetary easing, adding that "we reiterate our view that the normalisation in inflation could result in rates being eased by 100bps by FY16....Given current growth-inflation dynamics and RBI's December policy statement of the possibility of acting outside the policy review cycle, we wouldn't be surprised if it does cut before the February budget," he said. RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan during the last monetary policy review in December 2014 kept interest rate unchanged, saying that a shift in stance is 'premature' but hinted that a cut may come in early 2015 if inflation continues to ease
and government acts on the fiscal side. RBI is scheduled to announce its sixth bi-monthly monetary policy on February 3. According to official figures, industrial production grew at fivemonth high of 3.8% in November last year, while retail inflation inched up to 5% in December. According to HSBC, the CPI inflation would average in the 5.5-6% range in the first half of 2015. RBI's current target is 6% CPI inflation in January 2016. Meanwhile a DBS in a research note further said that "overall, we expect the production trend to improve gradually. ... This should see GDP growth recover to 5.6% in FY14/15 and accelerate to 6.1% in FY15/16", the DBS report added.

Women Hold Just 9.5% Of Board Seats In BSE 200 Companies By A Business Reporter
W
omen hold just 9.5% of board seats in BSE 200 companies, a report has found. However, the percentage is better than that of a few major countries like Japan and Portugal. According to a study released by research firm Catalyst yesterday, women's share of board seats in India is only 9.5% for BSE 200 companies. The presentation of women on boards seats in India is very low despite new Companies Act requires every listed company to appoint at least one woman to their board, reports PTI. The study titled '2014 Catalyst Census: Women Board Directors' has examined the gender diversity on boards at listed companies in 20 countries including the US, Canada, Europe and Asia-Pacific (Australia, Hong Kong, India and Japan). The percentage of women on board in public listed companies is topped by Norway at 35.5%, while Japan had the lowest (only 3.1%) share of female board members
among the countries studied. In the UK, women hold 22.8% of board seats in FTSE 100 index companies, in the US women hold 19.2% of S&P 500 company board seats and in Australia they hold 19.2% of S&P ASX 200 index. In Portugal women hold 7.9% of board seats, while in case of Canada, women's presentation is 20.8% on S&P/TSX 60 board seats. "We have evidence and optimism that closing the gender gap on corporate boards is possible, yet the current numbers are simply not good enough," says Catalyst President and CEO Deborah Gillis. "Companies that are not making diversity on boards a priority should be embarrassed. Smart leaders know that they can either lead the movement toward making profound and lasting impact, or be left behind," he added. Increasing the percentage of women on a board of directors has been linked to better financial earnings, more innovation and higher group performances.

URICH: Portugal and Real Madrid great Cristiano Ronaldo lifted his third FIFA world footballer of the year award in an overwhelming win over eternal rival Lionel Messi, Barcelona's Argentine magician. The 29-year-old forward -who played a key role in Real Madrid's charge to a 10th Champions League trophy -beat four-time winner Messi to the Ballon d'Or for the second year in a row yesterday. Germany's World Cup winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer came third in the vote. Ronaldo was the star of a glittering FIFA awards ceremony in Zurich at which Real Madrid teammate James Rodriguez won the goal of the year award and Germany's Joachim Loew was declared coach of the year. "I never thought I would win this trophy on three occasions," Ronaldo said in his victory speech, signalling there would be no let-up in his quest for football glory. "I want to be one of the greatest players of all time and of course this requires a lot of effort," added the striker, who won the award for the first time while at Manchester United in 2008.
ICING ON THE CAKE Loew, who moved up from assistant coach to the top job after the 2006 World Cup which Germany hosted, said that his award rounded off a sensational year. "It is for me a huge honour, it is the icing on the cake and the cake was winning the World Cup," said Loew, adding: "Winning the World Cup was the consequence of many years' hard work and lots of right decisions." Loew won the award with 36.23% of all votes. Real Madrid's Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti was second with 22.06% and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone third (19.02%), after an extraordinary season in which the Ar-

INCREDIBLE MOMENTS The Portuguese then took to Twitter to express his joy. "2014 was full of incredible moments. Thank you all!" he tweeted. Ronaldo led Real Madrid to their 10th European Champions League crown -- their first in 12 years -- in sensational style in 2014, smashing Messi's record of 15 Champions League goals in a single season with 17 in just 11 appearances. The only real disappointment for him was that a knee

Ronaldo, whose son and mother were present, burst into tears when he went up to collect the award before praising his team-mates and paying homage to his family. "I would like to thank my mother, to my father, who is in heaven and who is looking down on me, to my family," said Ronaldo. “It has been an unforgettable year and to win a trophy of this importance is unimaginable."

Ronaldo cruised to Ballon d'Or victory with 37.66% of the votes garnered from the 181 national team coaches, 182 national team captains, and 181 media representatives who voted. Messi finished second with 15.76% and Neuer was just adrift of the Argentinian with 15.72%. His victory was greeted with joy in Portugal with both the president and the prime minister expressing their delight. "This trophy is recognition of
your superb sporting ability, of your determination and of your dedication which has been a feature of your footballing career," wrote Portugal President Anibal Cavaco Silva on the presidential website. Portugal coach Fernando Santos congratulated Ronaldo."Cristiano has already said that what is missing from his brilliant career is to win something with the national team," said Santos, who took over from Paulo Bento after Portugal lost 1-0 to Albania in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier.
gentine led Atletico to the Spanish title. Rodriguez's sublime volley for Colombia against Uruguay in their last 16 match at the World Cup was a worthy winner for goal of the year voted on by the public. The 23-year-old who was outstanding as Colombia reached the quarter-finals only to lose to Brazil -- came out ahead of Robin van Persie's header at full stretch against Spain in the World Cup final group game against Spain, and surprise finalist Stephanie Roche of Ireland.
Lionel Messi admits he could leave Barcelona Z
URICH: Lionel Messi saw arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo beat him to the Ballon d'Or in Zurich and then reignited speculation over his own future by saying: "I don't know where I'll be next year." Barcelona and Argentina superstar Messi appeared to row back on his own comments made 24 hours earlier that rumours that he could leave the Camp Nou for Chelsea or Manchester City were "all lies". "I always said that I would finish my career at Barcelona and then at (his home town club in Argentina) Newell's," Messi told reporters after Real Madrid's Portuguese icon Ronaldo lifted the world footballer of the year title for the second year in succession at a glittering FIFA awards ceremony. "But I don't know where I'll be next year. "As Cristiano (Ronaldo) said recently, football has many twists and anything can happen," added the Barca talisman, who himself won the Ballon d'Or four
years in a row from 2009. After a superb performance in Barcelona's 3-1 win over Spanish champions Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Messi had angrily dismissed talk that he wanted to leave after clashing with Barca's manager Luis Enrique and the club's board. "I have never demanded anything to ensure that I stay because I never had any intention of leaving," he told Barca TV after the match. Messi's relationship with Enrique had come under scrutiny after the forward was benched for the 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad a week earlier. The rumours grew after Messi missed the first training session after that match, citing a stomach bug. "I have heard it said that my dad has spoken to Chelsea or Manchester City. It is all lies. I have taken this chance to deny it so that everyone knows the truth," Messi said Sunday. But his latest comments are sure to regenerate interest from a number of cashrich English Premier League clubs.

Kapil Dev hails Dhoni’s retirement timing K
OLKATA: Saluting his decision to retire from Test cricket, former India captain Kapil Dev said Mahendra Singh Dhoni has given everybody, including the chair-greedy administrators, a food for thought with his bold step. "You could have easily played 200 Tests. We could not do it what you have done by saying 'goodbye, I've done my best and let the next generation come out'. That's why I say 'Dhoni well done, you're my man'," Kapil Dev said during his address at the 4th Tiger Pataudi Memorial Lecture, organised by The Telegraph. "Dhoni you're a great guy. You have served the country so well. He has done a good thing. A lot of people said he should have played at least 100 Tests. I think he has given us a new thought. You don't have to play throughout your life. You should retire when you think the next generation is coming," he said. Quoting Aussie great Greg Chappell, he further said, "He had said one thing which I admire. Any cricketer who plays longer than his time, kills the next three generation. It's a thought I truly admire."

K Taking a dig at the cricket administrators, Kapil Dev said, "I hope in cricket, the administration people will learn from it and not stick to their chairs for 30 years or lifetime." Kapil also wished Dhoni and team all the best for their World Cup title defence in Australia-New Zealand next month. "I wish you another victory. I hope you play well and don't let it go. It comes every four years. It's painful to wait for another four years." Recollecting their 1983 triumph, the ace Indian allrounder said, "I feel very proud and happy I was a part of the 1983 team. Forget about captaincy, but a part of the process we started in our country."
OLKATA: Not less than 48 hours after returning from the gruelling tour to Australia, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha slammed an unbeaten century to script Bengal's stunning comeback against Jammu and Kashmir on the opening day of a Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match here. Having just returned from Australia on late Sunday night, Saha was quick to adjust to his home condition as his unbeaten 129 off 202 balls (18x4s, 1x6) took Bengal to 312 for seven at stumps from a precarious 68 for four at one stage after opting to bat at the Eden Gardens. While a relaxed Saha led Bengal's stunning comeback with his ninth first-class century, skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla lent a fine support to the wicketkeeper with a defiant 72 from 123 balls (9x4s, 1x6) in a 144-run fifth wicket partnership. In the morning, Jammu and Kashmir skipper Parvez Rasool (2/57) rattled the Bengal top-order with two wickets in successive deliveries when the off-spinner dismissed Arindam Das (30) and castled Sudip Chatterjee (0)

It's a typical slow and low bounce wicket, ideal for batting," a calm looking Saha said, adding that they would look to score 400-450 in the first innings. At the same time, Jammu and Kashmir's inexperience came to the fore as they showed little creativity in rotating the bowlers as the duo of Saha and Shukla easily played the spinners on the flat Eden track. EW DELHI: Former India cricket coach John Wright feels the only way the current team can defend its World Cup title is by backing its exciting batting line-up with a much-improved bowling effort than what it has shown of late. Wright said the team has got the best possible preparation for the mega event Down Under by playing a four match Test series and is soon to play in the ODI tri-series. "That team had been playing together for a longer period of time. This team is more unknown. Batting wise it looks as exciting as the one in 2011. Dhoni has had more leadership experience in oneday cricket. But a lot will depend on taking those early wickets and holding on to the catches," Wright told a hand-
Don’t underestimate India after Test loss: Michael Hussey
S
YDNEY: Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey warned teams against underestimating India after their 02 loss in the Tests series and said the visitors will be a confident side when they start their title defence in next month's World Cup. "The big positive for India is that they have already been in Australia for the last two months. They are now well versed with the conditions here, the pace and bounce of pitches. They also have a tri-series coming up involving England. So they have a good run before the World Cup starts and nobody should underestimate them because of the Test results," Hussey said. "Don't read too much into the 2-0 scoreline because not only did India compete hard in the Test series but they are a completely different outfit in limited-overs. They are very confident in that mode," he added. India lost the four-Test series against Australia after going down in the first two matches. Talking about India's performance, Hussey said the visitors' batting line did well but the bowling lacked disciplined. "Well the batting has completely changed and they have done well. Virat Kohli is a fantastic player and he has just scored runs by the heaps. I think this will continue for him going forward," said Hussey, who was part of the Australian team during India's 2011 tour.
Chris Rogers checks his helmet after being hit in the field during the second Test against India in Brisbane.
I contemplated retiring after being hit in second Test: Rogers S
YDNEY: Australian opener Chris Rogers said he contemplated retiring after being hit at the back of his helmet by a Rohit Sharma sweep shot while fielding during the second cricket Test against India at the Gabba. The incident happened on the opening day of the Brisbane Test when Rogers was fielding at short leg. The 37-year-old copped a ball to the back of the helmet, a spot similar to where the late Phil Hughes was struck during a Sheffield Shield game in November. The freakish incident upset Rogers so much that for a moment he found himself at the cricketing crossroads. "It was an interesting time after what happened with Phil. There are a lot of guys who are finding it pretty hard. Mortality hadn't really been an issue in the game," Rogers was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald. "I fielded at short leg on the last day in the Test when Michael Clarke got injured in Adelaide, and I took one on
the hip there, and I didn't do very well (with the bat), so I wasn't happy with my own form. Then we went up to Brisbane and day one I was under there and Rohit Sharma swept one and he hit me in the back of the helmet, and it's only inches away from where Phil got hit.
It was an interesting time after what happened with Phil. There are a lot of guys who are finding it pretty hard. Mortality hadn't really been an issue in the game.
CHRIS ROGERS
"So you just have different thoughts go through your head. That night I was pretty upset so I just wasn't sure which way to go. I had to speak to a few people close to me," said the splendidly consistent Rogers, who eventually scored 417 runs at an average of 52.12 in the fourTest series.
ful of reporters while watching the Ranji Trophy match between Baroda and Railways. "There will be two new white balls (in each innings), you want to take advantage of that. You want to be taking wickets, otherwise the game runs away from you," said the former New Zealand captain who is in India to look for fresh talent as a coach for Mumbai Indians. The sixty-year-old picked Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as India's key players in the tournament beginning on
February 14. He is also pleased to see Kohli doing well as a captain in the recently concluded Test series in Australia. "The most encouraging sign about Kohli is that he has performed (as a captain). It is very difficult to lead the side if you are not performing. Captaincy is like coaching. The more you do it, the more you learn. The impressive thing about him is that he leads with performance," said Wright. Talking about Rohit, he said: "I know what he can do.
He is a match winner and beautiful to watch." Wright also hoped that players who have been picked ahead of Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag perform in their absence. "I heard he (Yuvraj) is doing well in domestic cricket. If you drop a player like him, you just hope those who get the opportunity perform. He is a serious player. I am sure it (his selection) created a lot of discussion at the selection meeting," he said when asked about the Man of the Series at the 2011 World Cup.
