Mumbai police prosecutes Ind MLA Bachchu Kadu sans sanction, but approaches Speaker 'for permission' in case of Congress MLA Kripashankar Singh, reveals RTI query By Philip Varghese
J
ust like during the British rule, the law now seems to apply differently in different states in matters of criminal prosecution. This is what Right to Information (RTI) activist Anil Galgali learned from the replies by the Mumbai police, received under the RTI Act. While the Mumbai Police straight away preferred to prosecute independent MLA Bachchu Kadu, they chose to act in a completely contradictory manner in the matter of Congress MLA Kripashankar Singh. The Assembly Speaker denied permission to prosecute Kripashankar Singh recently. Galgali wrote to the Mum-
bai Police under the RTI to find out in how many cases they have prosecuted in three instances: after receiving permission, without permission and after permission from the Assembly Speaker. In a reply by the Marine Drive police station, Senior Police Inspector admitted that it prosecuted MLA Kadu in an offence registered under sections 332, 353 of the IPC without permission from the Assembly Speaker. “The act of MLA Kadu was not in the discharge of his official duty as it amounted to assaulting a government servant. The same principle should have been applied in the case of MLA Kri-

pashankar Singh, whose alleged act of amassing disproportionate wealth does not fall in the purview of ‘discharge of duty’,” said Galgali. He further added, “A catena of judgments by the Higher Judiciary confers sufficient liberty upon investigating agencies to prosecute public servants without sanction. The Bombay High Court division bench, headed by C J Mohit Shah, had delivered an in-depth verdict indicting Singh along with his family members for amassing unaccounted wealth exceeding crores of rupees. The Apex Court too, turning down Singh’s plea against the Bombay High Court order, had directed the SIT headed by the Mumbai Police Commissioner to proceed with prosecution of Singh and others. The doctrine of the ‘law of equality’ should be adhered to by the Mumbai Police.” When asked about the RTI reply, Mumbai police spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Patil said, “I will have to check the legality of prosecution in both the cases and the charges against them. Under the IPC, however, they can be prosecuted without sanction.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

The patient, a banker, came to Mumbai all the way from Shimla for undergoing treatment after he suddenly lost vision

he case of Mukesh Ranjan, a 35-year-old banker from Dharampur in Shimla, is a miracle, said Dr Prof S Natarajan, Chairman and Managing Director, AdityaJyot Eye Hospital, because the prognosis in a unique case like this is faster than the doctor has himself seen or heard of. Mukesh, who is a branch manager in a well-known bank, one fine day, suddenly lost his vision. “It was July 1 and I had worked hard on the previous day as it was the bank's closing period. I was going through certain documents when suddenly I could not see. I was shocked and did not know

I immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and then I was referred to Post Graduation Institute of Medical Education, Chandigarh where I was diagnosed with Bilateral symmetrical Retinal Detachment. On being asked about the next course of action with regard to the treatment and the possibility of my vision being restored, I was not given a satisfactory reply. So I called up my sister who lives here (Mumbai) and she asked me to fly down for treatment,” said Mukesh. Speaking about Mukesh's case, Dr Natarajan said, “What is unique about this case is that both his eyes Dr Prof S Natarajan, Chairman and had a great retinal tear that are sym- Managing Director, AdityaJyot Eye Hospital metrical with total retina detach- (left) with Mukesh Ranjan

The ADC spoke to B Mane, an education inspector, who said, “Schools are not seeking permissions for their picnics. The need for near vision glasses is also temporary.” Mukesh is all set to undergo a surgery on his left eye this week. “I had actually lost hope of getting back my eyesight. I came to the hospital, assisted by two attendants and was unable to see anything and do things on my own. Now, after undergoing the surgery in the right eye, I am extremely happy that I am able to walk around and do things on my own without any assistance. Now, my hope is back that after my second surgery, I will be completely normal and can join my work as a branch manager by next month,” said Mukesh.

Mukesh underwent an hour-and-a-half long surgery for his right eye where all the standard procedures were put together to repair the detached retina. What happened after the surgery was a surprise not only for Mukesh but also for Dr Natarajan himself. “The very next day after the surgery, Mukesh was able to see, read, walk and be as normal as any other person with normal vision in his right eye. fter the demolition of the Thorat House, a British-era building at Sandhurst Road station, on safety grounds, the Central Railways (CR) now plans to survey all structures and boundary walls along the railways lines in the city and the suburbs. After the Thorat House issue, the CR has come to appreciate the threat that old and dilapidated buildings along the railway tracks – central and harbour – pose to the safety of passengers and railway property. A team of experts will study the
foundation and structure of buildings and classify them as a potential threat or safe. A list of buildings which are prima facie found weak will be made and given to all concerned authorities, including the state government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and others. A Central Railways official said, “The Railways appreciates the safety and concerns of the tens of thousands of passengers who commute by trains. We are planning to study which structures can pose a danger to them.”

n elderly woman on Monday drowned in the sea when a massive tide lashed the city shore.
The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was swept into the sea at Marine Drive while she was standing on the promenade at the time of high tide, officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. "The elderly woman was on the promenade, watching the waves lash the shore, when she suddenly lost her balance and a strong current pulled her inside the waters before she could react," a civic official told PTI. The BMC has asked people to stay away from the
waters in view of the high tides of more than 4.50 metres in height expected in the Arabian Sea during this week. According to Marine Drive Police, the deceased is yet to be identified and the body has been taken to Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) hospital for postmortem. BMC had previously said that six teams were formed to patrol sensitive areas in the metropolis during time of high tides. Each team will comprise members of fire brigade personnel, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and lifeguards. The teams, comprising of 15 members each, have been deployed in areas like Girgaum, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa beach, Gorai beach and Chowpatty beach, where large crowds frequent the area during monsoons.

he Christian residents of villages around Vile Parle (W) protested on Monday after they noticed that a holy cross situated on S V Road in the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) compound, a short distance from the Santacruz Bus Depot, had been vandalised by unknown miscreants on Monday morning, for the second time. On the basis of suspicion, one youth has been detained by the police for investigation. SETU sub-office reopens in Bhayandar By Suresh Golani
A
week after the ADC carried a news report (dated July 7 – Setu sub-office shut down) regarding the abrupt closure of the only SETU SubOffice in Bhayandar, the district administration sensed the gravity of the situation and resumed services from Monday morning. Considered to be an 'electronic bridge' between the common man and government agencies to procure various documents, the only SETU sub-office operating
from the community hall building in Bhayandar (W) had been permanently shut down from July 3. The abrupt closure followed orders from the state government authorities coupled by standing instructions from the District Collector. Even as the closure was said to be a step towards centralising SETU operations across the state, the local populace were up in arms against the decision, prompting local
leaders, including Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik, former MP Sanjeev Naik and NCP leader Rohit Suvarna, to take up the issue. Sarnaik had even threatened to launch an agitation if services were not restored immediately. “As of now, document dispensing services at this suboffice have been extended for a period of two months,” confirmed a senior revenue officer. Launched in 2012, the e-governance of the ambi-
tious SETU project ensured that people had access to various documents or certification needed from the government, either at the click of a button on a personal computer or personal delivery of documents at the SETU sub-office within 15 days. Applicants living in Mira Bhayandar can once again get documents, including caste certificates, domicile certificates, senior citizen cards, income certificates and non-creamy layer certificates, from the SETU sub-office in Bhayandar.

This can only be stopped if the senior officers are given the powers of transferring the cops and selecting the cops to head the police station and the units, as these powers are with the politicians unlike earlier. Due to this, most cops have links with politicians and they know how to tackle such situations by using their political clouts.” In the past, former commissioner Satyapal Singh had come down heavily on the police department when the case of Kurla's Nehru Nagar police station, in which around 36 police officers were caught on CCTV accepting bribes. Singh had initiated a process of setting up a mechanism that will prevent such incidents. At a meeting with additional and deputy
commissioners, Singh had told them to compile a list of policemen known to indulge in corrupt activities like extortion in their respective areas. Also, formation of vigilance cells at the police station level were ordered and the preparation of confidential reports on personnel involved in such activities was to be prepared and sent to the DCP. In 2001, then commissioner M N Singh had shunted out a large number of senior inspectors after their subordinates were trapped by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Singh had initiated a policy: if a constable is caught in a bribery case, the senior inspector of the police station will be transferred. If a senior inspector is caught, the DCP will be moved out. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Dombivli student assault case, girl allegedly had criminal record
T
he Government Railway Police (GRP) are searching for a birthday boy as a witness in the case against the Dombivili thieving girls in an attempt to find out more about the three girls who claim to have been framed in the case, after it came to light that one of the three has a criminal past. Senior GRP officials remained tight-lipped about the issue as the Ministry of Railways has ordered an inquiry into it. In their complaint last month, the girls said that they were on the way to Ulhasnagar on June 29, 2014, to celebrate the birthday of a common friend. They have boarded a local train for Asangaon from Dadar station. They got off at Dombivli station to change to the local for Ulhasnagar. The girls alleged that as soon as they got down from the local at Dombivli station, three women GRP constables who were following them in the train asked them to pick up a purse that was lying on platform 2. When they refused, one of them was held by the neck and forced to pick up the purse. That is how, they allege, they are framed in the case. After the news report, the Railways Ministry ordered the GRO to submit a report

All residents of Gaas village near Vasai have launched an indefinite hunger strike outside the local tehsil office to protest against the illegal blockade on one of the approach roads to the village. The age-old road had been blocked more than a month ago, allegedly by some miscreants at the behest of a land mafia. Agitators, including youngsters, womenfolk and senior citizens of the village, have alleged that despite orders issued by the district administration to clear the road blocks, local revenue and police officials have refrained from executing it. hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday ruled out the prospects of old Sena guard and NCP minister for Public Works Chhagan Bhujbal's reentry into the party fold. Speaking to newspersons at the Sena Bhavan, while welcoming Bhujbal-founded Samata Parishad Nagpur unit chief Kishore Kanhere into party fold, he remarked that those former Shivsainik's
who have been the cause of distress and anguish for late Sena chief Bal Thackeray will not be welcomed back into the party. Reacting to the entry of rebel NCP MLA Deepak Kesarkar into the party and the likelihood of many more wanting to join the Sena, Uddhav cryptically remarked, “Don't just keep knocking at the Sena door, join in as fast as you can.” There were reports appearing in the section of the press Uddhav Thackeray
about the possibility of Bhujbal wanting to return to the Sena. However, when asked about it, he ruled out that possibility. Party observers and critics still argue that Kanhere's joining the Sena fold was akin to the cadres joining first, followed by the leader. However, Bhujbal himself yesterday had ruled out the possibility of rejoining the Sena ahead of the Assembly polls. It may be recalled that for a long time after the late
Arun Mehta left the Sena, it was Bhujbal who quit the party in December 1991. After the Congress-NCP-led Democratic Front government came to power, Bhujbal, who took over as the Home minister then, ensured a technical arrest of the late Sena chief over a alleged case of hate speech. For quite a few years both Bhujbal and the late Sena chief resorted to name calling, which they later mutually buried their long standing dispute.
7 Maharashtrians are Governors! BJP stalwart Padmanabh Acharya joins list of Governors to various states who hail from Maharashtra By Prashant Hamine
A
BJP stalwart from Mumbai, Padmanabh Acharya, has been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland by a notification issued by President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Acharya, along with Ram Naik, Governor designate of UP, join the list of seven Governors to in various states who hail from Maharashtra. The others who are still in office include: Shivraj Patil (Punjab), Sriniwas Patil (Sikkim), D Y Patil (Bihar), Margaret Alva (Goa) and Sayyed Ahmed (Jharkhand). Padmanabh Acharya on the other hand has been a low profile party old guard who has been instrumental in raising the party in northeastern states like Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. When asked about his new gubernatorial assignment, the 80-year-old veteran parliamentarian expressed satis-
faction over his more than four-decade long political career that began as a Jana Sangh shakha secretary in Goregaon in the 1960s. Naik was a three-time MLA and five-time MP from Mumbai North. He was twice the union minister in the Vajpayee governments of 1998, 1999-2004. In September 2013, he had announced his decision not to contest any parliamentary elections in the future. Meanwhile, in a bid to play down the often frosty relations between Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra, Ram Naik remarked that the ties between the two largest states of the country date back to the days of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Speaking to newspersons at state party head office in an evasive response to queries over natives from UP being targeted in Mumbai, the senior BJP leader pointed out that in
order to ordain the title of Chhatrapati upon Shivaji Maharaj, Gaga Bhatt, the priest from the holy town of Kashi in UP was called to perform the religious rites at the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj. When asked to comment upon the current law and order situation in UP, he yet
again refrained from making any comments arguing that he would act as a bridge between the Samajwadi Party, the state government of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. Asked as to how he would deal with the

Commenting upon the ECI's move to distribute voter slips during the recently held Lok Sabha elections, the senior BJP leader stated that in many parts of Mumbai, the voter slips were distributed very late and hence voters were not well-informed about their voter list number and nearest polling booth. Naik urged the ECI to distribute these voters slips as soon as they announce the dates for the ensuing assembly elections. On the issue of postal ballot for service voters engaged in election duty, he called upon the poll body to ensure that all the government employees, police personnel, security and paramilitary personnel engaged in poll duty got the chance to cast their vote.

Congress isolated I in Parliament?
S
HOULD the prime minister have the right to appoint his own staff or not? The Congress party in Parliament has expressed the view that bringing an amendment to a bill to okay an amendment to Trai bill is not proper. Over the issue there has been heated discussion. The Congress appears to have taken for granted support from the Opposition parties like Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress. That support, however, did not come. Mamata showed clearly that she will not be supporting the Congress in the House. Her support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi must have caused great disappointment to it. The Congress stands segregated in the House. Mamata has shown she is no friend of the Congress. Apparently she is a realist. During the Lok Sabha poll, she had used harsh words against Modi. The political scenario that developed after the election evidently made Mamata Banerjee change her attitude towards the BJP. Her state urgently required a financial package. It looks like two other state ministers - Navin Patnaik and Jayalalithaa also want assistance from the Centre. Patnaik wants a special status for Odisha and Jayalalithaa wants among other things, Kaveri water. All the three states will very soon support the BJP in the House. When this happens, the Congress will be totally segregated in the House. The Congress party which was in power will be sitting in the House, pathetic and isolated.

F the first 50-odd day of rule by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is any guide, it is the rightist government which has taken over India. The Nehruvian ideology which tilts towards left has been jettisoned. Once again, free enterprise and unencumbered trade will motivate people. This is a turnaround from the policies that has guided the nation so far. The public sector will shrink and the rich will expand their area of influence and operation. This is a logical consequence of a free economy. How far Modi will go to remove limitations on unplanned enterprise is difficult to say, but there is no doubting of governance by the rich and powerful. It is bound to drive the weak to the wall because the capitalist system knows no other way to grow. Yet, Modi should be prepared to face stiff opposition from the beneficiaries of the system which is leftist in content.

son for its halting approach. During the election campaign Modi had promised to cut red tape to ensure a rapid growth. When it comes to action there is hesitation, if not lethargy, on the part of the government. The BJP should understand that the development can mitigate the party’s parochial image. In an atmosphere where the growth is slow people miss the pluralistic society all the more. The only redeeming factor is that the BJP government has not underlined its communal agenda. Yet who knows whether the
Torrid experience
Spectacular step However, there is nothing dynamic about the programmes and policies which Modi has unfolded. His election campaign promised so much and aroused the aspirations of people to such a length that his budget is considered inadequate to bring about the changes which are necessary to go forward. Modi’s rule so far has been tepid and devoid of any spectacular step to pull India out from the mire of non-development in which it is stuck. The absence of push becomes all the more glaring when there is no lessening of poverty. Former RBI governor, Dr. C. Rangarajan’s report released a few days ago finds three out of 10 Indians below the poverty line. This is more than what we inherited when the British left in August 1947. It is disappointing to see Modi government not taking concrete and immediate steps towards bringing down inflation. After having experienced a long spell of non-governance under the Congress rule, I thought that the BJP government would spell out legal and other measures to set the strangled economy free to grow. The budget has not told us how and when. Instead, the government looks too timid to take steps which would be considered risky. When the BJP on its own has a majority in the Lok Sabha, it is difficult to make out the rea-
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar Modi government will go back to the policy of dividing people after making them complacent. In fact, it looks as if Modi is going out of the way to give the impression that after becoming prime minister he has changed his stance of promoting Hindu nationalism. His party, the BJP, talks about secularism all the time as if there is no contradiction between a Hindu state and a pluralistic society. True, this is the line of the RSS which believes that all those born in India are Hindus irrespective of whatever faith they may be pursuing. Yet, the BJP has kept a distance from the RSS because it is seen as an advocate of hard line. In fact, the RSS men are joining the BJP to get advantage of comparatively better image it has. Modi remained within limits when he went to Srinagar a few days ago. He did not say that the state was an integral part of India as he did earlier. He merely remarked that he would pursue former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s line of humanism. Even the hartal in Srinagar on the day of his visit did
‘A sage falls up, a madman falls down’ L
OOK in the sky without looking for something, because if you look for something a cloud is bound to come: 'something' means a cloud, 'nothing' means the vast expanse of the blue sky. Don't look for any object. If you look for an object, the very look creates the object: a cloud comes, and then you are looking at a cloud. Don't look at the clouds. Even if there are clouds, you don't look at them -- simply look, let them float, they are there. Suddenly, a moment comes when you are attuned to this look of not-looking -clouds disappear for you, only the vast sky remains. It is difficult because eyes are focused and your eyes are tuned to look at things. Look at a small child the first day he or she is born. He has the same eyes as a sage -- or like a madman: his eyes are loose and floating. He can bring both his eyes to meet at the center; he can allow them to float to the far corners -- they are not yet fixed. His system is liquid, his nervous system is not yet a structure, everything is floating. So
not provoke him to react differently. Perhaps, he thought that he had already sent a message across by visiting the state of Jammu and Kashmir within days of his taking over. The problem with Modi is his image. He is considered anti-Muslim in a country which has roughly 18 million Muslims. They, indeed, feel insecure. They still recall his complicity in anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002. Although a special investigation team (SIT) under the supervision of state high court has given him a clean chit, the tag of partisanship still pursues him. As prime minister, he should go out of the way to win the confidence of the minorities. His accommodative approach towards the SAARC countries — three of them are Muslim — is a step in the right direction. Yet, he has to do more to win their trust as Vajpayee did.
a child looks without looking at things; it is a mad look. Watch a child: the same look is needed from you, because again you have to attain a second childhood. But the whole world is mad, fixed -- that's why a sage also looks mad. Watch a madman: that is the look which is needed. In old schools of Tibet they always had a madman, just for the seekers to watch his eyes. A madman was very much valued. He was searched after because a monastery could not exist without a madman. I do not see yet any glaring false step in the governance. Elections are such a torrid experience that even the largest political party or a popular leader takes time to get adjusted to the cold reality of failure. This is what has happened to the Congress and its leader, Sonia Gandhi. Both have not yet recovered from the loss on the parliamentary election after ruling the country for a decade. The Congress has been reduced to a rump of 44 in a 543-member Lok Sabha. It is time for the party to analyse what went wrong. But the statements by the Congress leaders reflect complacency. The insistence by the Congress leaders to be recognized as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) makes little sense. When the party does not have the mandatory one-tenth of members, that is 55, in the Lok Sabha it should have accepted the defeat and faced the facts. There have been occasions when the Telugu Desam Party, despite being the single largest outfit, did not get the LoP status some years ago. I can understand the Congress’s predicament. But the party should not make it a big issue and instead leave it at that. The voters who have returned the BJP want to see the implementation of promises made by Modi. But then these are early days in his governance. We should wait for another 50odd days to see before assessing his performance since that is the target he has set for himself and his ministers. object to observe. The seekers will observe the madman, his eyes, and then they will try to look at the world like the madman. Those days were beautiful. In the East, madmen have never suffered like they are suffering in the West. In the East, they were valued, a madman was something special. The society took care of him, he was respected, because he has certain elements of the sage, certain elements of the child. He is different from the so-called society, culture, civilization; he has fallen out of it. Of course, he has fallen down; a sage falls up, a madman falls down -- that's the difference -- but both have fallen out. And they have similarities. Watch a madman, and then try to let your eyes become unfocused. In Harvard, they were doing one experiment a few months ago, and they were surprised, they couldn't believe it. They were trying to find out whether the world, as we see it, is so or not -- because many things have surfaced within the few last years. We see the world not as it is, we see it as we expect it to be seen, we project something onto it. — Osho

What will it take to intervene? SINCE the start of the recent Israeli retaliatory strikes against the Hamas & Hizbullah camps in Palestine, the Indian secular press has been persistently condemning this action by the Jewish State. However, all of them without exception seem to have done one thing, rather not have done one thing – not mention the root cause of this military response by the Jerusalem regime, viz., the daily barrage of rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians by terrorist groups based in Gaza and Palestine, which have claimed many innocent lives till date.
ONLY IF IT SUITS THEM: One fails to understand why justice-loving Americans are not speaking out strongly against the attacks on Gaza, apart from the fact that they are busy disciplining the Iraqis, and, not to mention, Gaza has hardly any oil fields to keep the American attention.

NCP-Congress merge A leading English daily has published a news item saying that the Congress in Maharashtra is prepared for a change in its leadership if the NCP is ready to merge with it. The condition seems to be perfectly OK considering the fact that the NCP is nothing but an off-shoot of the parent party, born out of it over the issue of Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origins. As that matter is no longer relevant, the separate existence of the NCP has totally lost its significance. Also, an outright unconditional merger with the Congress can go a long way in strengthening “secular” forces, especially in Maharashtra, where the party is mainly based. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

BEFORE launching a counter-offensive in the Gaza strip, Israel should have learnt from the effective steps taken by the secular UPA govt in India against the menace of international terrorism. FINAL FOOTBALL FEAST: Indians enjoyed every second of the top-class soccer and, now, one hopes something will be done to exploit the soccer talent abundantly available, but sadly neglected, and only receiving step-motherly treatment in our country!
GERMANY'S captain Philipp Lahm was a proud man as he lifted the World Cup trophy with a 1-0 win against Argentina in the final soccer match between Germany and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There were lots of twists and turns, but the better side won in the end. Early exit of tournament favourite Brazil opened the field to the other sides in the Championship to come to the last stage. Germany, while leaving something in reserve, came close to making a breakthrough just before the break when Höwedes charged through a congested penalty area and headed to Thomas Müller’s corner against the post. Götze second touch was to arrow a leftfoot volley into the net and that ensured Germany will always remember Rio de Janeiro with the same fondness as Bern in 1954, Munich in 1974 and Rome in 1990. Germany played great football and they deserved to win the coveted trophy.
MARIO Gotze's 113 minute leftfooter left the Argentinians stunned as Germany won their 4th FIFA world cup in style. It was a closely contested finale as the heartbeat of the entire soccercrazy Argentinian nation momentarily stopped when tiny Mario found the net for Germany to give them a deserving win. Messi messed up one too many in the all-important game, though he was awarded the Golden Ball trophy for being the player of the tournament. Germany were clear favourites to win the cup after their 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-finals and it was truly the day of the champions as the better team won the all-important game of the tournament. Argentina played their hearts out but a few misses proved costly and the nation went into mourning after the loss as football is a religion in this tiny South American nation. Well played Germany.

For the Konkanis, Ganesh Chaturthi is a grand festival. But travelling to Konkan becomes a problem because of reservations made as soon as they open and agents selling black tickets. sha Bhosle says she wants to see her granddaughter become a playback singer like herself and is already in the process of preparing her. 12-year-old Zanai is Asha's son Anand's daughter and she has already made her singing debut in 2013 film 'Mai', which starred the legendary crooner. Bhosle also shared the stage with Zanai at a music award show early this year. "I have done everything I want in life -- singing, acting, TV shows, stage shows. I also recently walked the ramp during a fashion show. I think my next target is to groom my grand-daughter as a playback singer. "She has a very wonderful voice -- a mixture of mine and Lata didi. Reflecting on the current scenario in the Hindi film music industry, the 81-year-old singer said she sometimes feels annoyed when she hears outrageous lyrics in songs of today like 'Halkat Jawani', 'Munni Bad-

But then there are also songs like 'Jab Se Tere Naina' and some by Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan," she said. Bhosle also opened up about the hardships she had to face early in her career when she had to make her way in the film industry through established singers like her sister Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan and Geeta Dutt. "The challenges that I had to face during my early years were humongous. There were many established singers and it was difficult for me to get into the industry. So, I decided to change my style of singing.

During the last two years, Raj Bhavan has replaced conventional lights with LED lights. Old power consuming Air Conditioners have been replaced by power-efficient VRV units, while water heaters have been replaced by solar water heaters. Raj Bhavan had also implemented an awareness campaign to save power. ym memberships come at a price these days — a very hefty price! So, it’s understandable if you don’t want to shell out thousands of rupees every six months, just so that you can pretend to use a few machines, once or twice a week. If going to the gym is becoming a pain and getting a personal trainer is a distant dream, working out at home should be your go-to option. Not only will it help you save money, it will also cut down on travel time, since all you have to do is get up and get going. Read on as we tell you what exercises to perform and what equipment is worth buying if you’re in it for the long haul.
Set up an exerciSe corner Before you get started, you need to make sure that you have a dedicated workout corner. You may not have the luxury of space like you would in a gym, but devoting even a small portion of your living room or bedroom to building a workout zone will help you stick to a routine. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2014
Alright, we might be talking about fitness that’s a little closer to your couch than your doorstep. We know that you’re probably tired of hearing how you don’t have to go to a gym to stay fit — but, today, we’re actually going to show you how to do it. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you what exercises you can do on your own and show you how to build your own home gym
inStall a mirror
Do you know why gyms have mirrors? It’s not so that you can take selfies — though that’s what they’re mostly used for these days. They’re actually there so that you can keep track of your posture and correct it when you need to. For the same reason, install one in your workout space at home. Ensure that you get one that is a few feet taller, as well as wider than you are, to make sure that your movements don’t get cut off.
Workout journal This is one of the best ways to get good results at home. Having a workout journal will help you keep track of the sets, reps and muscle groups that you concentrate on. While writing your journal, dedicate a few pages to recording easy exercise steps so that you have a quick reference guide on hand in case you forget a particular exercise. Also include ones that aren’t a part of your plan but work the same group of muscles, so that you have an alternative for when you get bored of performing the same exercise repeatedly.
chooSe a Spot
FirSt aid
Choosing where you want to set up your home gym is not just about scouting for the emptiest area in the room. You need to ensure that it is a well-lit corner, with surroundings that won’t de-motivate or distract you. Avoid spots that are near your television or the kitchen and unless your window faces a quiet, scenic location, keep your curtains closed to stay focused while you exercise.
It is extremely important to have a well-stocked medicine cabinet, to treat injuries and sprains, whether you’re working out at home or not. This is incredibly important, because if you don’t treat minor injuries in time, they might get aggravated, hampering your routine. Ensure that your first aid kit includes pressure bandages and muscle relief creams and sprays.
a muSic SyStem This is an important element that you might forget about. Music raises your energy levels and motivates you to work out. While listening to music on your iPod can often do the trick, installing a pair of speakers near your workout spot will help you work out without being tempted to stop and switch songs too often. Create a playlist so that your workout music is tailor-made to suit you. >> From what exercises to perform to equipments you’ll need, find out Continued on pg 14 « all about working out at home
Get orGaniSed Install a few cabinets, hooks and shelves so that your equipment isn’t lying around. It will give your workout a little order and make it seem like a permanent routine. This arrangement will also allow you to clean the area, without having to move a tonne (sometimes literally!) of weights, mats and exercise balls.

Know wHAT To PIcK Since you don’t have a trainer, knowing what exercises you should perform at home can be challenging. Don’t worry, as we sorted through various exercises to bring you a few that are safe and require no equipment. Squats: We can’t recommend squats enough! They work your thighs, glutes and your core, all in one swift move. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart and your hands outstretched. Lower yourself into a squat, shifting your body weight on to your heels. Stop when you assume a position that is similar to sitting on a chair; hold the position for five seconds and then stand up again. If you find this difficult, do it over a couch, so that you know how low to go when you are performing the first half of the squats. overhead lunges: These engage several different muscle groups, helping your body stretch. The easiest way to do an
overhead lunge is to hold on to something over your head. You can use anything, even a broom will work. Start off with your hands over your head, holding the broom in between. Then, step in to the lunge, but make sure to not take too big a step. The correct way to do this is to ensure that your knees aren’t stretched out farther than your toes. calf raises: These give your ankles, calves and hamstring an intense workout. The exercise works better if you have a step-stool or a step, but doing it on the floor will
work just as well. If you are standing on a step, make sure that half your foot is on the step and the other half is off it. Start off by standing on your toes, hold the position for two counts and then lower yourself for one count. A few repetitions are all you need to give your hamstrings and calves a solid workout. Step-ups: Make sure you have a stable chair before you get started, because a rickety one can lead to serious injuries. All you need to do is stand on the chair and then get back down, using alternate legs to step up and step back down. Put the chair against a wall for added support before you perform this exercise, which will work your butt and legs. Tricep dips: You’ll need a chair for this one too and it will give your upper body a rigorous workout. Stand with your back to the chair
and lower your body in such a manner that you grip the edge of the chair with your hands. Extend the rest of your body till it is in a straight line — this is your starting position. Now, dip your body lower, putting all your weight on your arms and come back up. Bird Dog: Begin on all fours, ensuring that your palms are in line with your shoulders. Extend your right leg backwards and simultaneously, extend your right arm forward, so that the right side of your body forms a straight line. Maintain your balance without arching your back and slowly return to your starting position. Then, repeat it with your other arm and leg to complete one repetition of the exercise. Superman Back extension: Lie down on your stomach, stretch your arms out in front of you and lift them off the ground, as if you are flying. Then, lift your legs and upper body off the ground, with only your pelvis touching the floor. Hold the position for three counts before lowering your legs and torso on to the floor.
GET EqUIPPED >> You can perform tricep dips at home with the help of a chair
Once you’ve set up a home gym, the next step is to buy a few workout essentials that will serve you well. While you can even use household items as exercise props (see box), some equipments are a must-have, while others you can do without. Read on to find out more:
BUY IT
Exercise mat: From cushioning your feet to ensuring you have a good grip (bare feet can slip easily on tiles), an exercise mat is the first thing that you should buy. These mats are inexpensive and easy to store. Dumbbells: Rather than lusting after a barbell set, simply buy a pair of dumbbells with adjustable weights. You can perform most of the barbell exercises with dumbells as well. Pull-up bar: This is something that no household item can replace. A pull-bar is cheap and works as a great fitness tool. It is extremely easy to install (just make sure you get a good one with sturdy grips) and it will help you perform exercises that target your arms, chest and abs. Exercise ball: Great for stretching as well as to help you perform exercises such as crunches, an exercise ball will take up space, but it will be worth it. Resistance bands: Resistance bands make strength training easier and more effective. You can also perform a variety of yoga poses using these bands in order to increase intensity. Punching bag: Get this when you’re ready to take your workout to the next level. A punching bag will improve your stability, speed and strength. It also makes for a great stress-buster!
TRASH IT
Treadmill: Do you really want to spend an exorbitant amount on buying a treadmill, just to avoid taking a walk around your neighbourhood? There is nothing wrong with buying this, but it will not be worth your money. Elliptical trainer: Like a treadmill, all an elliptical trainer does is simulate several everyday activities such as running and climbing stairs. Trampoline: While the trampoline workout sounds interesting, spending thousands of rupees to buy one doesn’t make any sense. Ab trainer: For the money they cost, ab trainers don’t provide enough benefits. The effects are just marginally better than performing a set of crunches. A medicine ball is a better, not to mention, cheaper, alternative.
THE ALTERnATIvES
Several household items make for fantastic gym equipment. Here’s a list: water bottles: Bottles filled with one or half a litre of water, can easily replace dumbbells. A sturdy foot stool: Find a foot stool with sturdy legs and rubber ends, as they work well if you want to intensify push-ups. You can even perform leg raises on them. A sturdy chair: A chair, similar to the foot stool we mentioned above, is a very good workout prop. There are numerous chair workouts you can find that will allow you to squeeze a little fitness into your day. Stairs: Okay, these might not be in your home, but they are too good to not be included in this list. All you have to do is run (yes, we mean run) up and down the stairs for a 10 minutes and you’ll get a great cardio workout. A rucksack: Stuff an empty rucksack with old magazine, newspapers and heavy cardboard (if you can find some). Now, use this as a weight. Be careful, because a rucksack will be unstable and might slip from your hands, injuring you.

There’s nothing wrong with consuming alcohol, if you indulge in it once in a while and in small quantities. However, certain spirits are actually dangerous! Yamini Walia tells you which ones to steer clear of, or be very careful of drinking if you decide to
R
etired American football player, Ray Lewis, once said, “We get one opportunity in life, one chance at life to do whatever you’re going to do.” We agree with and subscribe to most of that view. However, taking it too seriously when it comes to consuming alcohol or certain types of food might be a bad idea. There’s nothing wrong with trying out different types of food and drink, but make sure that you are aware of the potential ill-effects that accompany them. The following drinks, for example, can actually be very dangerous to consume.
absinThe This alcoholic beverage is regarded as the father of dangerous drinks. Famous due to pop-culture references, the drink contains wormwood and anise. It may be popular now, but in the 19th century, it drove people crazy, caused epilepsy and tuberculosis, and was actually banned. It has also been linked to hallucinations, though the topic is fiercely debated. Due to recent changes in the rules and regulations of food and beverages, absinthe is available in the market again. If you do intend to try it, make sure you buy it from a very reliable source and ensure that it contains the legalised, 70% or 80% alcohol.
mezcal Mezcal is a distilled alcoholic beverage, made from agave plants in Mexico. As part of a marketing gimmick in the 1940s, mezcal producers started putting a young insect in the bottle, a larval form of the moth, Hypopta Agavis, which lives off the agave plant. Unfortunately, the trend caught on and the drink is still sold with a visually disturbing worm inside it, making it unsafe to consume.

>> Absinthe can cause epilepsy and tuberculosis. So, be extremely cautious if you plan on trying this dangerous drink
made up of grain alcohol and ethanol. In extreme cases, just a sip of this drink can see you paying the ICU a visit.
Really? A scorpion in your vodka?! Yes, the Russians have taken vodka to a new level, by preserving a scorpion in it. This drink is used as an aphrodisiac in south-east Asia and also, to treat muscle and back pain. The highlight of this drink, is that the full-length scorpion is edible along with its stinger. Sounds horrifying!
eVerclear This drink is banned in 14 countries, which is enough proof of how dangerous it is. The drink contains 95% alcohol and is
moonshine According to popular belief, moonshine can make you blind you and can even lead to fatality. Since, the drink is not aged; it contains approximately 75% alcohol. Moonshine is a distilled alcoholic beverage, associated with backwoods stills and hillbillies. Since its manufacture is not regulated (in India, it is termed as hooch or tharra), the distilling process is often unclean. So, there is a high possibility of the presence of contaminants, in the drink, which can and have lead to death.
Four loKo As far as alcohol content goes, Four Loko is nothing exceptional — it only contains up to 8 or 12% alcohol and is mostly consumed by college students. But, it is so dangerous that it is dubbed as “badness in a can” by the Harvard University Health Services. Why you ask? Well, the answer lies in its caffeine content, which is equal to five cups of coffee! This means that because you think that you aren’t drinking much alcohol, you will consume so much caffeine, that your energy levels will rise beyond the normal amount and this can make you violent. This drink has already led to several cases of hospitalisation and is best avoided.
« health fooD combination: lemon & kale We all know the benefits of vitamin C and leafy greens. But, did you know that the combination can do wonders for your health? Dev Goswami explains the benefits of combining kale and lemon
W
e’ve told you a lot about various food combinations and how they benefit your health. Today, we are going to tell you about lemon and kale. Find out about the respective benefits of these two foods and read on, as we tell you how the two foods can work together to give you health benefits greater than what they would on their own.
Kale Kale is often termed as the queen of greens and rightly so, as they are a nutritional powerhouse. One of the best reasons to eat this leafy green is that it is low in calories, high in fibre and has almost zero fat — exactly what you need to consume if you’re trying to lose weight. It is also rich in antioxidants, can help lower your cholesterol levels and
contains high quantities of vitamin A, C and K. Just like lemon, kale too helps detoxify your body and has anti-inflammatory properties. One of the best benefits of kale, however, is that it’s extremely high in iron.
lemon This citric fruit is immensely healthy and one of its best properties is that it helps flush toxins out of your body, which is why you should begin your day with a few drops of lemon juice, mixed with warm water. Another great benefit of lemon is, quite obviously, its vitamin C content — which helps boost your immune system. It is equally rich in potassium, calcium and pectin fibre (which helps improve colon health). Lemon also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and
aids in the production of digestive juices and bile, which play an important role in keeping you healthy.
The combinaTion The next time you make a salad, add a few drops of fresh lemon juice. Why? Because the vitamin C from the lemon increases the amount of iron that is absorbed by your body. Also, while both the foods are antioxidants on their own and help detoxify your body, the combination has much better results. Lemon promotes the formation of antioxidants in your liver, which, when combined with fibre and chlorophyll from kale, makes the detoxification process more effective. Apart from this, the combination will also boost your immune system and increase muscle strength.

While an easy life is an ideal situation for everyone, you have to realise that you will never get anywhere in your career if you cannot handle high-pressure situations. Spending a few minutes thinking before you speak, will help you express your anger without being bitter, resentful or saying things that you may regret.

Write it out The next time you’re extremely angry with someone — don’t call or text them. Instead, write a letter or an email and then put it aside for a couple of hours. Go back, edit and then hold on to it again for a few hours. With time, you’ll find yourself editing out all the anger and calming down, without starting a fight!

The facTs
acne is caused by excessive sebum When your face produces too much sebum, it clogs your pores and causes the formation of a pimple, or in most cases, several pimples. Also, if your face is unclean, the bacteria on your skin can infect these pimples and cause them to spread rapidly. So, make sure you wash your face with a mild cleanser, twice a day. hair Products aggravate acne For adults in particular, hair styling products, such as sprays and mousses are the number one cause of acne. It is so common, that it even has a name of its own — pomade acne. Hairspray seals the bacteria in the pores that are located on your forehead, which erupts on to your skin’s surface in the form of inflamed pimples. So, steer clear of hair sprays and make sure that you don’t touch your face too much while applying hair products. Also, bangs or fringes that have hair styling products on them, can aggravate acne, as they fall over your face. acne on your back, neck and shoulders Apart from your face, sebum producing glands exist on your back, neck and shoulders as well, and so, there is a chance of you suffering a breakout on any of these four areas. In case you do, switch to a mild anti-bacterial soap, or those that contain tea tree oil (as it dries
up the pimple and disinfects it) and ensure that you wear loose clothing that allows your skin to breathe. don’t Wash your face too often We know that we told you to keep your face clean to avoid breakouts in the first place, but don’t wash your face too often either. Scrubbing your face clean every few hours, to make sure that one solitary pimple shrinks, is a bad idea, because overcleansing your face will strip it off its natural oils and your body will go overboard while trying to compensate for it. This overcompensation, leads to excessive production of sebum and can actually aggravate your acne. natural fats and chocolate don’t Worsen acne Yes, you read that right. You can go ahead and consume natural fats such as butter and chocolate, even if you have acne-prone skin. Although they are thought to aggravate acne, there isn’t any scientific proof to back this claim. Cheese is another ingredient that you can eat in moderation, but shy away from

excessive consumption of carrots and tomatoes, as surprisingly, they worsen acne! Remember, stick to natural fats but avoid greasy, deep fried food. acne is hereditary This one is rather self explanatory. Acne can most certainly be passed down from one generation to another, so maintain a balanced diet and keep your face clean to reduce your chances of suffering from this nagging problem. Wash your PilloWcase regularly It may seem strange, but it is the simplest thing you can do to control acne, and is effective too! If you suffer from infected pimples, the bacteria and oil will transfer onto your pillowcase very easily, making you more susceptible to a full-blown breakout. Wash your pillow case every alternate day to reduce the risk and make sure that you do the same with your face towel. Frequently laundering towels and pillow cases ensures that your face isn’t coming in contact with the harmful oils and bacteria that are collecting in the fibres. don’t scrub, Pick or touch a PimPle Even when it is close to being healed, don’t scrub or pick at your pimple as it can cause dark spots on your skin and can lead to keloid scars. Let the pimple vanish completely before you touch the area or use a scrub over it.

“If you want to reduce the fat on your back, you have to exercise all your back muscles, even though the fat is usually located in the lower back area. Back fat is deposited around the erector spinae muscle and the best exercise to target this is the conventional dead-lift — it helps you train your lower back muscles and also enhances your functional strength. Other exercises that you should perform include lat pull-downs for your upper back muscles, bent over rows for your upper as well as some parts of your lower back and dumbbell shrugs that target your trapezius muscle, which starts from your neck and extends till your spine. Combine these exercises with a good diet that is high in proteins and provides a moderate amount of carbohydrates,” says Sagar Pednekar, fitness expert and manager of personal training operations for Gold’s Gym.

It can make daily communication difficult and lead to long-lasting problems, if it’s not diagnosed immediately. >> Neglected Tropical Diseases can render you bed-ridden and prevent you from leading a normal life
So neglected When it comes to the health of a nation, international attention has always been focused on conditions such as HIV, cancer and tuberculosis. However, according to the World Health Organisation, more than a billion people suffer from a group of diseases, aptly named the Neglected Tropical Diseases. Dev Goswami tells you more
C
ardiovascular diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV... these are some of the deadliest and most commonly mapped diseases. However, there is a group of lesser known, but equally dangerous, diseases called the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), which includes maladies such as stomach worms, elephantiasis and trachoma. While these three diseases are the most prevalent in India, NTDs in other countries also include chagas disease, leprosy, yaws, rabies and snake bites.
WHy are THey NeglecTeD These conditions are usually neglected, because they usually affect a lower strata of society. NTDs primarily affect countries with tropical climates, and are usually prevalent amongst the poorest and most marginalised sections of society. Since patients of NTDs don’t always have a direct connection to mainstream media, the diseases do not get the attention that they deserve. They affect the poor population of society because NTDs primarily spread due to unsafe water consumption, low levels of sanitation, as well as parasites such
as mosquitoes. Such conditions are rarely present in urban areas or developed countries, which is another reason that NTDs aren’t in the spotlight.
THe saD parT One of the worst features of NTDs is that the diseases have horrific symptoms (blindness, swelling in external body parts, anemia, and pregnancy complications), and they can trap an entire generation in a deadly cycle of poor health. According to Global Network — an initiative by Sabin Vaccine Institute that works with governments and organisations to help fight NTDs — these diseases stop adults from working and children from attending

There’s bound to be a few leaves rustling, especially through the monsoon. Are you wondering how such a minor sound can affect your hearing? Surprisingly, every time the leaves outside rustle, your ears are exposed to 20 decibels of sound. While this is not enough to cause any damage, repeated exposure, combined with traffic and city noise, can, over time, adversely affect your hearing.
souNDs IN your ears In a city like Mumbai, earphones and headphones are a lifesavers, especially when you use them to drown out the noise while travelling. But use them sparingly, because they expose your ears to 50 decibels of noise, which can gradually result in hearing loss. We suggest that you try reading a book to pass your time while you travel.
Heavy TraffIc Avoiding traffic in Mumbai is impossible. Heavy city traffic can expose your ears to 80 decibels of noise and excessive exposure to it can cause hearing loss. Instead of trying to find the quickest route, leave a little early and opt for a route that is traffic-free, or more silent — even if it is a little longer.

school, and so, can affect a nation’s growth and development
Whether you are at work or home, you are bound to engage in conversations with other people. A normal conversation exposes your ears to 60 decibels of sound and while that might not harm you, very loud conversations (fights in particular) can. So, remember to speak softly!
THe Hopeful fuTure
THuNDer
While several countries still suffer from NTDs, the good news is that there is hope that these diseases can be eradicated. In June this year, the World Health Organisation reported that Bangladesh is now on the brink of defeating kala azar, also known as black fever, which is a type of NTD that the country has been grappling with. END7, a campaign (www.end7.org) run by Global Network, which has also received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to build support across countries to help in the fight against NTDs. The campaign’s goal is to eradicate NTDs by 2020.
According to figures released by the Global Network, India accounts for 35% of the global causalities of NTDs. In a Global Network’s press release on END7, Dr. Neeraj Mistry, the managing director of Global Network, was quoted saying, “India currently runs some of the largest NTD control and elimination programmes in the world, signalling its commitment to improving the plight of millions of people.” The fact that India is ready to fight these conditions is also echoed by Anshu Prakash, joint secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, who said, “We have already defeated smallpox, guinea worm and polio in India. NTDs can be our next major public health success story and we are on track to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) very soon. A focus on NTD control and elimination also represents one of the best investments we can make in the health and economic future of our country.”
During monsoons, thunder is a very common phenomena and a clap of thunder exposes your ears to up to 120 decibels of noise, which can cause immediate damage to your ears. So, make sure to carry a set of ear buds with you, when you’re outdoors. >> Constant exposure to something as minor as the leaves rustling can damage your hearing

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2014
F
ORTALEZA (Brazil): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch his first multilateral engagement in this seaside city of Brazil, meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of today's BRICS Summit at which India will press for equal shareholding for its five member countries in the proposed US $50 billion BRICS Development Bank so that no shareholder dominates. Modi will join Putin, Xi, South African President Jacob Zuma and the host President Dilma Rousseff in deliberations over the proposed bank, international financial architecture and other issues at Fortaleza. India is keen on the issue of equal share holding since it does not want a repeat of the distortions that have crept into Bretton Woods institutions like International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the Asian Development Bank in which rich countries like the US and Japan have a strangle hold.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Modi will also discuss the possible outcomes of the two- day summit on other issues like reforms of the UN Security Council and international financial architecture. Sources said India's primary goal is equal shareholding for all the members -- Brazil, Russia, India,
China and South Africa. The BRICS Development Bank, an idea which was conceived in Delhi in 2012 and approved in Durban last year, is to be set up with an initial corpus of $50 billion, with scope for expansion up to $100 billion when new members are added. For the initial $50 billion, India wants equal contribution by all the five members of $10 billion. This is because India doesn't want the development bank to fall into the ownership pattern of IMF and World Bank, with a distorted share holding. The other priority for India are about the presidency of the bank and the name to be given for it. Apparently, India would like it to be called the New Development Bank, an expression used by Modi in his departure statement on Monday. "I also look forward to our discussions to further advance intraBRICS economic cooperation and our collective efforts to advance global economic stability and prosperity," the Prime Minister had said. In particular, I look forward to the successful conclusion of major BRICS initiatives like the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, which have seen significant progress since their launch in New Delhi in 2012," Modi said. "These initiatives will support growth and stability in BRICS and also benefit other developing countries," he said. India wants the modalities for the establishment of the bank through a simple route and not a complicated one. It wants to avoid the pitfalls of the Bretton Woods institution of one who pays more calls the tune. During his meetings with Chinese and Russian presidents, bilateral issues may also come up but no bigticket items are likely to be decided since it would be a get to know meeting.
Ram Naik gets UP, O.P. Kohli moves to Gujarat, K.N. Tripathi gets W. Bengal, B.D. Tandon gets Chhattisgarh, Padmanabha Acharya gets Nagaland

EW DELHI: Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ram Naik was on Monday appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh and party's veteran Delhi leader O.P. Kohli will move to Gujarat, in the first appointment of five Governors by the Narendra Modi government. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, Naik will take over in Uttar Pradesh after B.L. Joshi, perceived to be a close confidante of Gandhi family, was asked to tender his resignation. A three-time Parliamentarian, Naik, 80, has the rare distinction of being the only minister who completed five years as Petroleum minister in one government. Hit by cancer, Naik was bedridden in 1994 but fought back and overcame the deadly disease. Kohli, 78, who was a Rajya Sabha member from 1994 to 2000, takes over as Governor in Gujarat after 87-year-old Kamla Beniwal was shifted to Mizoram by the Government for remainder of her term till November this year. A former Chief of BJP's Delhi unit in 2009, Kohli has been associated with BJP since his student days and was President of its student wing -- ABVP -- and later became Chief of Delhi University Teacher Association. According to the communique, Keshari Nath Tripathi, a former Uttar Pradesh Speaker will take over in West Bengal, a post which had fallen vacant after the resignation of M.K. Narayanan after he was nudged to resign. A poet and author of books, Tri-

Balram Das Tandon, 87, founder member of Jan Sangh in 1951, was appointed Governor of Chhatisgarh after Shekhar Dutt tendered his resignation on June 18 after he too was sounded by the Union Home Ministry. Tandon was the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab in 1969 and later served as Cabinet Minister in Parkash Singh Badal's government. A six time MLA, Tandon was critical of Badal government's decision in 2012 of providing free electricity to state farmers. Padmanabha Acharya, a member of working group on North East region of BJP and Co-Convener of Overseas Friends of BJP, was appointed Governor of Nagaland after President Pranab Mukherjee accepted resignation of Tripura Governor Vakkom Purushothaman, who was also officiating as Nagaland Governor.
Row over journalist meeting Hafiz Saeed N
EW DELHI: A row erupted over yoga guru Baba Ramdev's close aide Ved Pratap Vaidik's meeting with Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed with Congress on Monday seeking to corner the government inside and outside Parliament over whether it had given its approval. The government on its part distanced itself from the meeting and declared it had nothing to do with the journalist "directly, indirectly or even remotely" and asserted there was no sanction from its side. "There is no Track-2 or Track-3 diplomacy involved," it added. Vaidik had met the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, said to be the parent organisation of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba(LeT), in Lahore on July 2 while touring Pakistan along
with a group of journalists and politicians invited by a peace research institute. As the Congress demanded his arrest, Vaidik defended his parleys with Saeed, saying he has been meeting all kinds of people and that it was a "simple thing" for him. He also rejected suggestions by Congress that he might have acted as government's envoy, saying he was "nobody's envoy but my own". The meeting generated heat in Parliament with Rajya Sabha witnessing two adjournments during Question Hour. Congress members in both Houses sought a detailed statement from the government on the "purpose and motive behind the meeting with India's most wanted terrorist".

The government has slapped an additional penalty of USD 579 million on Reliance Industries for producing less than targeted natural gas from its KG-D6 block, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said yesterday. With this, the total penalty on RIL for missing the target in four fiscal years beginning April 1, 2010 now stands at a cumulative USD 2.376 billion, the Minister informed the Lok Sabha yesterday. The penalty is in the form of disallowing costs incurred. The Production Sharing Contract (PSC) allows RIL and its partners BP Plc and Niko Resources to deduct all capital and operating expenses from the sale of gas before sharing profit with the government. Disallowing costs will result in government's profit share rising by USD 195 million from 2010-11 to 2013-14, he said.

However, the kitchen staple, potato, went up by 45.52 %.Prices of vegetables during the month declined by 5.89 % from May, edible oils 0.75 %, sugar - 2.09 %. Onion prices were down by 10.7 %. In the past few months, however, the prices of onion and potato had been going up. The government has taken various steps including imposing minimum export price of USD 500 a tonne on onion and USD 450 tonne on potatoes to improve domestic supply. It has also put a stock holding limit on these items and has decided to release 50 lakh tonne of rice in open market to prevent price rise due to poor monsoon. "The moderation in inflation to-
gether with the rebound in industrial production as per the recently released data, provides a positive signal that the structural bottlenecks afflicting the economy could be gradually showing signs of receding and green shoots of recovery could be around the corner," industry body CII said in a statement. Among others items that became expensive in June include include fruits (up 21.40 %), milk (10.82 %), egg, meat and fish (10.27 %) and rice (10.24 %). Food inflation in June was down at 8.14 % from 9.5 % in May. However, it is likely to remain a cause for concern for the government given the patchy monsoon so far. Inflation in the fuel and power category, meanwhile, was down at 9.04 % from the previous month. Among other items that witnessed fall in prices in Juneinclude cereals at 5.33 %. But, prices of pulses became expensive at 1.78 %, according to an official release. In the non-food articles category, the rate of price rise during the month was slower at 3.49 %.
Among others, prices of fuel and power grew at a slower pace of 9.04 %, as against 10.53 % in May. Beverages, tobacco & tobacco products prices rose to 8.64 %, from 8.45 %. Prices of aerated drinks and tobacco products have gone up. In other items in the manufactured category, cotton textiles price rose to 8.31 %, though the rate of price rise for man-made textiles was slower at 5.54 %. The prices of cement and lime declined at 4.45 % and for basic metals alloys and metal product inflation was down at 2.83 %. The WPI inflation for April was revised upwards at 5.55 %, from 5.20 % provisionally. Industry body Assocham said"When potatoes and tomatoes grab headlines, they limit the policy space both with the RBI and the government to really go for bold measures. So, very effective and quick central intervention is required with the help of the states to tame the prices of essential commodities whatever it takes, or else bold reforms will remain non-starters."
Chinese FDI Could Touch USD 30 Bln By 2025 Infrastructure To Get Multi-Year Boost, Says Fitch C By Gurdip Singh
By A Business Reporter
T
he country's infrastructure sector will get a huge boost from the multitude budgetary proposals, especially those on easing the funding for the sector, ratings agency Fitch said yesterday. "The new Indian government...reasserted one of its core economic priorities to ad-
dress the country’s infrastructure deficit...Infrastructure to get multiyear boost," it said in a note. The agency said through the budget, the new government has made a commitment to carry forward the previous Manmohan Singh-led regime's efforts to clear the infra backlog. It singled out the move to allow banks to raise longterm bonds for lending to longer gestation infrastructure projects, and making it more attractive by giving concessions on the mandatory bond holdings and cash reserve requirements, as one of the biggest positives."It is the measures to ease funding that are particularly noteworthy and will be critical for driving
the new investment cycle," it said. Fitch said the new government led by Narendra Modi has made new long-term capital investment cycle as a policy focus, which means fiscal and regulatory policy changes should be supportive of corporates in the infrastructure, construction, and real estate industries. However, these positives will not play out so much in the short term and are applicable only in the medium to long term, it said. Apart from Rs 600 billion in direct infrastructure investments, special economic zones, new ports and subway projects, the budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also included major announcements on urban infrastructure and road building, it said. Additionally, measures on the REIT (real estate investment trusts) will also be supportive to the sector, while opening up the construction sector for greater foreign investor play. On the power sector, the agency said the extension of tax benefits for generating companies by three years will support their profits. The plans to rationalise and improve coal supplies for power plants are also critical for improving productivity, it added. It can be noted that infrastructure is estimated to require over USD 1 trillion in investments during the 12th Five-Year Plan period ending 2017. The sector has, however, suffered in the recent past due to host of reasons, including difficulties in getting project clearances, some judicial interventions and also higher interest rates.

hinese foreign direct investment (FDI) into India could touch USD 30 billion by 2025, says a book. "We deem it entirely possible that, by 2025, the stock of Chinese FDI into India could be USD 30 billion, and if Chinese industrial clusters come to be established (in India) even larger, says the book titled "The Silk Road Discovered", co-authored by Singapore-based business veteran Girija Pande, the Washington DC-based research consultancy China India Institute chairman Anil K. Gupta and the institute's managing partner Haiyan Wang. "This projection refers only to equity ownership of 10 per cent or more in an India-based com-
pany...It does not include loan or minority stakes," said the authors in the book, noting that both Chinese and Indian companies have entered into each others markets through third-party business acquisitions. The book was launched by Arnoud De Meyer, in Singapore by the President of the Singapore Management University, yesterday."We are forecasting nearly USD 25 billion Chinese investment into India in the next five to seven years. "The Chinese investment into India will help build up infrastructure and export manufacturing," Pande told PTI during the book launch. By 2025, China and India will be two of the world’s four largest
economies and by then, economic ties between them should also rank among the 10 most important bilateral ties worldwide, said Pande. The 269-page publication examines how India companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra Tractors, NIIT, Tata Motors/Jaguar Land Rover and Sundaram Fasteners have figured ways to win in China. Their experiences may inspire and offer lessons to other Indian companies, it said. The book also examines how Chinese pioneers such Lenovo, Huawei, TBEA, Haier and Xinxing have made a strong commitment to India and are beginning to realise the fruits as a result of this commitment. Though Anandibai’s character has negative overtones Sonalee said, “I am willing to shed more positive light on this character through my honest portrayal in the film.” She further adds, “I researched a lot on the character by reading books on her and interacting with my director Mrunal Kulkarni who has a wealth of information on the character.” She further revealed, “Prasad Oak is my co-star in the film and he plays the evil scheming Raghobadada and it was great fun to work with him since he had already directed me in his film ‘Hay Kay Nee Kay Nhay’.” It was a great honor to work with a talented director like Mrunal who has already delivered a hit film like ‘Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Aste’, and that, too, in a lavishly made sweeping historical like 'Rama Madhav' is a great achievement for me.” When quizzed about her experience shooting for the film, she says, “ It was a great feeling to work on this film as not many historicals are made in Marathi nowadays unlike the olden days.” Good for you Sonalee!

ingapore-based Gayatri Sriram is an acclaimed exponent of Bharata Natyam and an alumnus from the renowned Kalakshetra Dance School in Chennai, established by the legendary Dr Rukmani Devi Arundale. Gayatri says, “I am the disciple of Guru Smt Minal Prabhu and have been learning Bharata Natyam since I was a child. I am privileged and happy to be associated with the Kalakshetra. I am highly inspired my veteran mentor Smt Jayalakshmi, though I never had the chance to meet Rukmaniji. The Kalakshetra style of Bharata Natyam is known for its clarity of movements and the perfect technique which is not easy to master.” “For my performance at the NCPA on July 17, I have taken the theme of Mukti Margam where Bhakti is a medium or a tool to Mukti. In other words, it is the path of liberation and enlightenment. The performance starts with an invocation to Surya Devata, followed by an item on Ardhariswara Swarupa of Lord Siva, Varnambased on Vaishnavism and a Ashtapadi by Jaydeva. I am quite excited to be performing at the NCPA as every performer looks forward to it, moreover my links with Mumbai are quite old.” “Whenever I take up any theme, I am particular about the grammar and structure of Bhrata Natyam which can't be disturbed. My recent performance in Paris was well-appreciated. I feel fortunate to have performed in various parts of Europe as well,” she said. Gayatri Sriram is actively associated with Singapore Arts Federation and is a grant holder of National Arts Council of Singapore. Gayatri has established her academy of dance known as Sruti Laya and trains several aspirants. Gayatri is happily married to Raj Sriram and has two daughters who are also into dancing.

ritya Kalanj ali Institute of Fine Arts, Ambernath, organised the Samarpanam programme of classical dance with the dance ballet 'Ramayana', also performed as a tribute to their mentor Dr Sandhya Purecha, at the Ravindra Natya Mandir auditorium. Nritya Kalanjali Insitutue has been established with the intention of promoting and propagating Indian classical dances and also to encourage young children to learn and practice Bharata Natyam by young and talented exponent Ramesh Koli. Ramesh Koli is the ardent disciple of renowned Bharata Natyam exponent Dr Sandhya Purecha. Every year, the Samarpanam is organised as a tribute to the mentor. Ramesh religiously does the "pada puja" to cleanse the feet of the Guru and seek blessings, too, in the traditional way.On this occasion the students of Ramesh Koli performed the dance ballet 'Ramayana' wherein the role of Rama was played by Ramesh himself. The ballet takes you on a journey of the 'charitra' of the lord, pertaining to various episodes in the life of Lord Rama like being banished to the forest for 14 years, the death of Raja Dashrata, Rama's younger brother Bharata seeking the 'paduka' of Rama, the golden deer and Ravana's appearance in disguise, the disappearance of Sita, the fight and death of Jataayu, Hanuman, and finally the victory over Ravana, and Lord Rama seeking the throne. While the attempt was sincere the students should be better prepared and practised, as it not easy to deal with 'Ramayana'. Instead Ramesh should have taken a simpler and easier themes like the naughty pranks of little Krishna, the Kaliya Mardana, etc. which is easier for children to understand and perform. The emphasis seemed to be more on quantity and not on quality as the stage was full of children trying to enact varied scenes and sequences with excitement and nervousness. While on one hand it is necessary to encourage young talent, it is more important that they practice well before coming on stage to perform. Ramesh Koli as Rama was pleasing, the dialogues and the stagecraft too were quite proper. On the whole it was a partially pleasing presentation.
alabharati' hosted a mini Kirana Gharana Sammelan last week. Veena Shukla, a fairly senior pupil of the doyenne Dr Prabha Atre, and Shrinivas Joshi, son and pupil of the legendary singer the late Bhimsen Joshi were featured in this morning sammelan. Shukla sings in a mature voice and has a good sense of melody and rhythm. She sang two ragas at the concert. The first was 'Komal Rishabh Asavari' and the second was 'Parameshwari' which is an invention of the late Ravi Shankar. It is an intriguing combination of 'Ahir Bhairav' and 'Bhairavi'. Shukla gave a good account of herself and could carry the audience with her. The real surprise of the morning was an excellent performance by Shrinivas Joshi. Since he is a son of
cians and artists with a long standing lineage of excellence, Sayak Barua infuses Eastern Raga style with Western traditions of blues and jazz. His passages sparkle with meditative drones and flickering improvisations. He has the zeal to experiment with non traditional instruments including the guitar and electronics, thus adding a different flavour to his music. With a Masters in Instrumental Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Sayak was appointed to the position of Junior Research Fellow for Sarod by the Indian Ministry of Culture. Sayakwas was selected from India as a One Beat SM Fellow – an international cultural exchange initiated by the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs – to participate in Samarkand, Uzbekistan where he secured a grand prize in 2013. A postgraduate in Indian
great maestro and is a late starter of a sort, he tends to get underestimated. There is little doubt that his father was a phenomenon and none of his pupils could measure up to him. That does not mean that Shrinivas Joshi does not have the requisite performing ability which was on display at the concert. Instead of choosing to sing the ragas identified with his father, he sang the raga 'Shudh Sarang'. “My father first heard this composition from the veteran Shivrambua Vaze. He later taught it to me with the help of the text which was made available by Satyasheel Deshpande,” he said. It was sung with proper adherence to the grammar as well as spirit of the raga. The succeeding 'Multani' too was full of vibrant phrases. 'Teerth Vithal', the abhang popularised by the maestro as well as 'Jo Bhaje Hariko Sada', the 'Bhairavi' devotional, were rendered in a manner which was more interpretative than imitative. Mandar Puranik on the tabla was superb as was Niranjan Lele on the harmonium. Born in a family of musi-
classical vocal music from Rabindra Bharati University, Moumita is among the finest young contemporary Indian classical singers. She started learning classical music from the doyen of Kirana Gharana, late Pandit A Kannan. Judging her outstanding natural ability, she was chosen by Shri Anjan Majumdar, senior disciple of late Pandit Kannan, for further guidance and training in the finer nuances of music. Moumita is the first female vocalist to perform in the Lahore Music Conference in Pakistan. She was conferred the title of 'Adwitiya' in classical vocal organised by Anand Bazar Patrika and Shalimar concerts. She has several music albums of Thumri and Dadra to her credit. Presently she is a guest lecturer at Rabindra Bharati University. Sayak and Moumita were a ccompanied on tabla by Utpal Das, a first class Master's in Instrumental music (tabla) from the Rabindra Bharati University. The concert was organised by 'Udayan' at the Hall of Harmony.

India stun continental giants China in Asian basketball
By Chetan Narula

OTTINGHAM: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lauded his bowling attack for its performance in the first Test versus England, which fizzled out to a tame draw on an unresponsive pitch here today. The visitors scored 457 and 391/9d in their two innings while the hosts were bowled out for 496 in their only essay. “We cannot control the pitch. We have to make do of what we have and there have been a lot of positives in this match,” said Dhoni. “The bowlers did really well on especially on a wicket like this. Even in bowling 160 overs they kept their intensity and put in a lot of effort. Each of them bowled nearly 25 to 30 to 35 overs and yet they kept running in.” “Overall our batting looked good too. Murali Vijay did really well and the others as well. Some batsmen get off to a great start in their careers and others take time. It is not always about results. If you look at the previous few tours, there has been a lot of improvement in our batsmen,” he added. The ‘lifeless’ pitch was the central theme of the Test match and it made many a bowler brush up their batting skills, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar scoring two halfcenturies, Stuart Binny, Mohammad Shami and James Anderson scoring maiden Test fifties. Anderson was also involved in a world record 198-run stand with Joe Root who scored 154 runs. This was after Vijay set the tone with his 146 runs in the first innings. “When you play overseas, you want to play on pitches that are suited to the home conditions. When you go to India you don’t want flat tracks but turning pitches because scoring runs on those pitches it gives you pleasure.”
Time for Dhoni to go as Test captain: Chappell By B D Narayankar
B
ANGALORE: Former Australia captain Ian Chappell does not find Mahendra Singh Dhoni good enough to be India’s Test captain any more and said it was time to hand over the reins of the team to Virat Kohli. “I think it time for Dhoni to go and may be it is right time for Kohli to come in as captain,” Chappell told PTI in an exclusive interview here. “Certainly, he (Dhoni) is not a Test captain. I think he is a good captain in shorter-version of the game. I don’t think there would be a problem to give it Kohli now, though,” he said. Chappell said India need a fresh brain to lead the side, but Indian selectors are not ruthless to take hard decisions. “Indian selectors do not have the ruthless quality as Australian selectors have. They wait for the guy to retire. I mean after he (Dhoni) lost 4-0 to England and

Responding to 423 by Australia 'A' in the four-day game, the visitors ended on 165 for three today with Manoj Tiwary (50 not out) and Baba Aparajith (20 not out) fighting on. UMBAI: India, ranked 11th in the continent and 61st in the world, stunned favourites China 65-58 in a Group A game of the 5th FIBA Asia Cup basketball championship for a historic firstever triumph over the world's 12th-ranked nation at Wuhan. Pratham Singh and Amjyot Singh accounted for 13 points apiece, while pivotal player Vishesh Bhriguvanshi notched up 10 points as India led the continental giants by 15 points after the second quarter .In head-to-head record, 15-time winners of the Asian Basketball Championship, China had won all their seven previous meetings in the FIBA ABC between the two rivals, by at least 30 points on each occasion, but this was the first time the two teams met in the FIBA Asia Cup. It was India's first win in two games in the five-team group also
comprising Asia no. 2 Iran, no. 7 Japan and no. 14 Indonesia. Coach Scott Fleming said it was a surprise to him why this, a victory over China, had not happened earlier. "In fact, I'm more surprised that this was the first win for India against China. Because we have a lot of potential and this should have happened much earlier," Flemming told FIBA Asia website. "For me personally, this win was another game in this competition. We have lot more games to go. But for these guys (the players) it's a great result for all the hard work they have put all these years," the American said. "I'm so happy for these players. And I'm so happy for the country. I've coached for 32 years in the USA, and the only reason I came here – win or lose – was to make a difference in the lives of these players.”
Jayawardene announces Test retirement OLOMBO: Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene has C announced his retirement from Test cricket following the home series against South Africa and Pakistan this year.
Australia, if he would have been an Australian captain he would have gone. He did nothing to inspire the team,” he said. “You can always lose, that is fine, but you go down
fighting. I did not find him do that. To me the captain has lost his usefulness and it is time for him to go.” Chappell said 27 is about right age for Kohli to lead the side.
Cutting, Sayers push India ‘A’ on backfoot B
The Indian basketball team rejoice after putting across favourites China.
Sayers (3/22) sent opener Robin Uthappa for 10 and then cleaned up Lokesh Rahul for 52, who notched up his eighth first-class fifty. Karnataka batsman Lokesh looked solid in his 102-ball stay as his innings was laced by seven boundaries and a six. He did put on a 67-run second-wicket partnership with Jiwanjot Singh. Sayers struck again for the final time of the day to get Singh caught behind for 29 and put the visitors in trouble again. Aparajith and Tiwary then stuck
together to manage an unbeaten 69-run partnership and give the team hope for the next day's play. Earlier starting on the overnight score of 288 for seven, the Aussies picked up the strings from last evening as Cutting (96) and Cameron Boyce (57) continued the counter-attack to stitch a 133-run eight-wicket partnership. Playing on his home turf, Cutting combined the right dose of caution and aggression to trouble the Indian bowlers and hit five fours and four sixes in his 117-ball innings.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said Jayawardene, 37, has written a letter to the chief executive officer Ashley De Silva announcing his wish to retire from the longest version of the game. “It was not an easy decision to make given that it has been a great privilege and honour representing my country during the past 18 years, but I believe this is the right time”, Jayawardene was quoted as saying. The veteran batsman will play two Tests against South Africa on July 16 and July 24, respectively, followed by a two-match series against Pakistan in August. Jayawardene, though, added that he was fully committed to represent the country in the one-dayers. This would mean that Sri Lanka will not miss him during the World Cup 2015 to be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand.

Krantivir fought back after dropping the opening game to overcome a spirited Nithin D.

HEIL GERMANY!
R
IO DE JANEIRO: Germany wrote a new chapter in the history of international football as they became the first European team to lift the World Cup in South America, clinching a hard-fought 1-0 win over Argentina in the final, their triumph coming on the back of steely resolve and blood on the pitch here. Substitute Mario Goetze scored the all-important goal in the 113th minute, combining with another sub Andre Schürrle, who provided him the assist, leaving thousands of Argentine fans at the iconic Maracana Stadium heartbroken and the Germans, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, ecstatic. The golden generation of German footballers' eagerness to win the silverware was best defined by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was bleeding from a cut on his face following a rough challenge, after the game went into extra time. The winning goal came when Schurrle made inroads down the left hand side and played a cross towards the near post for Gotze, who took it on his chest before placing it into the back of the net with his left foot. The result meant Lionel Messi's dream to join the pantheon of greats such as Diego Maradona and Pele ended in heartbreak. The 27-year-old Argentina captain had the chance to win the cup for his country at the start of second half, but this was not to be his day. It was not the free-flowing football Germans dished out in the beginning of the tournament but, on the biggest stage of all, they appeared determined to not let go of this golden chance to script history. This was Germany's fourth World Cup triumph, and their first since reunification. Last time too, their title win had come against Argentina in 1990 in Italy. After a rather subdued outing in the first half, Germany gradually applied pressure on the op-
ponents in the second half, before upping the ante in the extra time. The ploy worked for the Europeans as Argentina appeared to have lost the plot following a promising start, with some of them even resorting to physical game. Joachim Loew's side made its intentions clear at the start of extra time, with Schurrle and Mesut Ozil both getting a sniff of the goal. The only consolation for Messi was winning the Golden Ball for being the best player of the tournament. The Golden Boot went to Colombian striker James Rodriguez for scoring six goals while Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer bagged the Golden Glove. It was even stevens in the first half as both Argentina and Germany had their moments with the balance slightly tilted in favour of the South Americans. That's perhaps because Alejandro Sabella's outfit had more shots at goal as compared to their famed opponents from Europe. They made inroads into the German half intermittently and kept the back four, led by skipper Phillip Lahm, busy with their typ-

THE GOAL THAT MADE HISTORY...
SUPER SUB, SUPERB GOAL: Germany's Mario Gotze volleys to score his side's only goal in extra time past Argentina's goalkeeper Sergio Romero during the World Cup final match at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
After the final whistle sounded in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday evening, Germany’s players gave free rein to their emotions. Bastian Schweinsteiger cried uncontrollably, Manuel Neuer draped himself in a black, red and gold flag and Miroslav Klose could not stop smiling. The Estadio do Maracana provided the backdrop to a historic occasion as Germany became the first European team to win the FIFA World Cup in South America thanks to a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.Having scored the winner, Mario Gotze was understandably a man in demand among his teammates as the celebrations got into full swing, and the youngster himself normally such a cool figure - was ecstatic. He had every reason to be, after his spectacular 113thminute strike earned his country a fourth World Cup title. “Andre [Schurrle] put in a superb ball and I was able to control it on my chest,” a somewhat incredulous Gotze told FIFAafterwards. “Then somehow the ball was in the net.”
LOST FOR WORDS It was the moment the 22-year-old Bayern Munich attacker truly become a global star, with an astonishing piece of skill that catapulted an entire nation into raptures. “Everything happened so quickly but it was great to see how much of a release it gave the team and how we still fought right until the very end,” Gotze said. “We thoroughly deserved to win it because we’re a great side. It’s an indescribable moment.” Despite only being brought on as an 88th minute substitute, Gotze still did enough to be named as Budweiser Man of the Match and to become a national hero in his homeland.“It’s difficult to put it into words,” Gotze continued. “I can’t describe what it’s like in the changing room right now. It’s probably exactly the same back in Germany. I think we played well as a team throughout the whole tournament and every one of us deserves this. It’s a great feeling for everyone in Germany and for us as a team." Indeed, it is exactly that togetherness that set Germany apart in Brazil. CELEBRATION TIME “You can’t win a World Cup with just 11 or 14 players,” said German Football Association president, Wolfgang Niersbach. “You need 23 players and that’s precisely the mindset Germany had here in Brazil. Team spirit was the secret to our success. We didn’t have one standout player like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Mario Balotelli.”

RIO DE JANERIO: Bloodied and bruised, Bastian Schweinsteiger paid tribute to Germany's fans after a historic victory saw the country become the first Europeans to win the World Cup in the Americas. Germany claimed a fourth title after Mario Goetze came off the bench to score a 113th minute-winner in their 10 victory over Argentina at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana Stadium. Midfield general Schweinsteiger said messages of support from loyal fans back home had helped the team on their run to the title. "We'll enjoy the moment, it's unbelievable," said Schweinsteiger, who claimed his first international title after a decade with 'die Mannschaft'. "Thank you to the whole of Germany for your support. We could feel how much you have got behind us here. It was an unbelievable performance, but how the boys on the bench have got into it is something I have never experienced before. That gave us so much power, now because of it we have won the World Cup." Schweinsteiger put his body on the line in the final and was left bloodied in his personal battle with Argentina's midfielders Lucas Biglia and Javier Mascherano. He had to twice re-adjust as defensive midfield partner Sami Khedira dropped out at the 11th hour with a calf injury, then Khedira's replacement Christoph Kramer went off after 31 minutes with a head injury. But Schweinsteiger capped a battling display by soaking up plenty of physical punishment in extra-time. He was left clutching his left ankle on the Maracana turf after Mascherano's 102nd-minute tackle-from-behind, then his right ankle took a pounding after a double sliding tackle from Mascherano and Biglia. The Bayern Munich star needed treatment for a facial cut after taking a stray fist in the face on 110 minutes from Manchester City's Sergio Aguero while challenging for a ball. What is more remarkable is that Schweinsteiger came to Brazil after an injury-riddled 2013-14 campaign.

THE NEW HIGH FOR LOEW... Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger and head coach Joachim Loew embrace after the World Cup final match between Germany and Argentina at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
‘MIRACLE BOY’ GOTZE R IO DE JANEIRO: Joachim Loew revealed he told Mario Gotze to "prove he's better than Lionel Messi" before Germany's "miracle boy" hit the extra-time goal to win Sunday's World Cup final. Gotze came off the substitutes bench to score a stunning 113thminute goal as Germany beat Argentina 1-0 at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium. "I told Mario Gotze, 'go out and show the world you are better than Messi'," said Loew. "Gotze is the miracle boy, he is the wonder who can play in numerous positions, he is the decider who can come on and make a difference and that is what he did today." The German coach meanwhile

Sabella rues missed Argentina chances R
IO DE JANEIRO: Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella was left ruing his side's failure to take their chances after the South Americans' World Cup final defeat by Germany here. Gonzalo Higuain missed a glorious first-half chance to put Argentina 1-0 ahead, while Lionel Messi also squandered a good opening early in the second half yesterday. Instead Germany, who controlled possession, struck an extra-time winner through Mario Goetze. "It was a very balanced game," Sabella said. "They had more possession, but we had more cutting edge, more chances. When there are chances in a game that is so evenly balanced, you have to take them. We lacked a bit of efficiency." Sabella, meanwhile, praised his players for recovering from a gruelling semi-final against the Netherlands to take Germany all the way to the wire. "We played a day later and extra time, and the

They were warriors, at least in the football sense. I congratulate them, obviously, because there is nothing else to do. A coach always has to judge the performance, which I think was very good, and above all the effort. They gave every last bead of sweat for Argentina." Sabella added: "Bearing in mind the opponent and the circumstance of playing a day later, it was our best game. "After 24 years, the players made history. CHANCE TO JOIN THE GREATS
R
IO DE JANEIRO: Argentina's 10 defeat by Germany in World Cup final prevented Lionel Messi, who was named Player of the Tournament, from cementing his place in the pantheon of the truly great. While the 27-year-old has won everything there is to win -- and broken every record there is to break -- with Barcelona, the final offered him the opportunity to definitively seal his legacy in the sport. Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo all scored decisive goals in finals, while Diego Maradona created the goal that settled the 1986 tournament, but Messi found himself upstaged by Mario Goetze's sensational extra-time winner for Germany. He would be haunted in particular by a glaring opportunity early in the second half, when he found himself with only Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat, but whipped his shot wide. It was to be his only clear sight of goal and his failure to seize the chance continued a narrative that had taken root earlier in the knockout phase. Whereas Maradona had
GOLDEN GREATS OF THE WORLD CUP...

seemed to grow with each match as Argentina surged to the title in 1986, scoring braces against England and Belgium in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, Messi appeared to shrink. After dazzling in the group phase with four goals, he made the winning goal for Angel di Maria against Switzerland in the last 16, but in his own encounter with Belgium he flickered only sporadically, and in the semi-final against the Netherlands he was anonymous. He has now gone four games without scoring for the first time under the stewardship of coach Alejandro Sabella, losing his capacity to make a difference at precisely the wrong time. His inability to reverse Argentina's fate at the Maracana suggested that the fatigue of which his father has spoken weighed more heavily upon him that he has yet admitted. With 354 goals in 425 games for Barcelona, many of them works of art, his genius cannot be denied, but as he himself has admitted, there is no substitute for a World Cup winner's medal.

BUENOS AIRES: Argentines reacted with tears, cheers and violence after the dream of a third World Cup title slipped through their fingers Sunday, as clashes between hooligans and police ended a massive street party. Tens of thousands of people flocked to the Obelisk in Buenos Aires, the iconic monument where the country traditionally celebrates and rallies, waving the flag, setting off fireworks and singing the praises of national hero Lionel Messi and team. Despite the 1-0 loss to Germany in the down-to-the-wire, extra-time match, young Argentines climbed onto traffic lights and bus stops, dancing and singing to the beat of drums. But after several hours of partying, dozens of hardcore fans known as "barra bravas" started throwing rocks at riot police watching over the crowd, who responded by firing rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon. The clashes sent families with children scurrying for refuge in restaurants or hotel lobbies. Most of the crowd dispersed as a haze of tear gas settled over the area, leaving just a few dozen fans who broke windows and set trash on fire, determined to provoke the police. TV images showed looters carting off stolen items, including tables and chairs from a restaurant, as newscasters criticized police for just standing by. Fifteen police were injured in the fray and some 40 people were arrested, media reports said.
BITTERSWEET ENDING The clashes contrasted with the mostly celebratory reaction to the bittersweet end of the nation's World Cup campaign. "It was still a good World Cup. Reaching the final against Germany isn't too bad. I'm proud of the team," said Leandro Paredes, a 27-year-old mason. "We didn't manage to get revenge (for Argentina's loss to Germany in its last World Cup final in 1990), but I saw 11 warriors on the pitch during this final." At 20 years old, Martin Ramirez was not yet born when Diego Maradona led Argentina to their last World Cup title in 1986. He said Sunday's game was "tough."
