rime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday appealed to friends and well-wishers not to celebrate his birthday and instead dedicate time and resources towards relief work in this hour of need for floodravaged Jammu & Kashmir.

Modi's appeal came amid plans to celebrate his birthday on September 17 across the country, including in Gujarat where he will be present that day, reports PTI. "I am hearing from different places that friends & well-wishers are planning various pro-

he Thane police have arrested six men from Jammu for possession of illegal arms.

After receiving a tip-off from an informer about weapons coming into the city and being hidden in some slums, the Kasarwadawli police raided a hutment in Tukali village and arrested the six people.

On interrogation by the police, the accused said that they ran a security agency named Maharashtra Rajya Security Agency and had brought the weapons from Jammu to be circulated to their security guards. But the

police found that no such agency exists in any records, nor do the accused have a licence for the weapons.

The smuggling of weapons has been going on for the last three months. The seized weapons were smuggled into the city about 15 days ago.

One of the accused, identified as Mazahar Khan (21), had brought the weapons into the city from Kashmir.

The supplier of the weapons, identified as Gulzar Khan, is still at large.

The six accused have been in the city since the last three months and now have nowhere to go as their homes have been washed away in the recent floods. The

For the last three terms that is for the last 15 years, Diwali had been sweet and special for the ruling Congress-NCP led Democratic Front alliance thanks largely due to some last minute display of brilliant political firecrackers.

This time around their stockpile seems to be slightly depleted in what is being attributed to the long anti-incumbency factor. But on the opposite side (Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena led Mahayuti) the picture does not look that bright either.

That can be gauged from the fact that post Lok Sabha elections there has been healthy increase in voter populations in some Assembly seats held by these two parties.

Another reason why often

old tricks or past equations do not work every time is the fact that people these days are too shrewd to understand the difference between being taken for a ride and being offered a real credible alternative. The Lok Sabha elections seem to have changed all that, both the competing alliances seem to be hell bent on redrawing the seat sharing formula.

The tensions within the Congress-NCP alliance over the issue is no secret either.

They are trying to yet again bank on the MNS to split the BJP-Sena vote bank and deliver them a fourth term in office. For Raj Thackeray it is the dual challenge of keeping his flock together and giving them some hope to fight for something and keeping him relevant in the scheme of things.

For the ruling CongressNCP alliance in 1999 it was the anti-incumbency of the previous Sena-BJP led government. In subsequent elections it has used issues like Free Power to farmers, James Laine’s controversial book on Shivaji Maharaj, or the statue of Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai to retain power for so long. This time it is searching for a new issue to retain power against a resurgent yet faction ridden opposition.

And time is running out for both.

n keeping with demand made by a group of people, public trust Shree Vardhaman Sthanakvasi Jain Shravak has proposed to set up a hospital in memory of late freedom fighter and social activist Ahilya Rangnekar on a plot of land in Dadar.

The trust owns a 642 square yards land in Dadar.

However, it wants to acquire from civic body an adjacent plot, which originally belonged to them but was later reserved for a school, a release said. In the Town Planing (TP) scheme, this land was first shown reserved for a school. However, the school never came up and the land was encroached upon. In the revised Development Plan (DP), reservation of this land has been changed to accommodate the dishoused.

The delegation has urged the municipal body to consider the demand of people to set up hospital and grant adjacent land for this purpose, the release said.

n a bid to make a strong case against fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, the crime branch would mention the cases of the journalists threatened by the gangster and his men in the past, in the conspiracy chargesheet to kill a city-based journalist case.

The ADC in its report 'SCRIBES TO GET COP AID' dated September 12 was first to highlight Pujari's act of threatening a veteran citybased journalist two months ago. On September 5, crime

branch sleuths arrested three shooters of the gangster who had come to the city to kill a journalist. Shockingly, this was the second incident, in which the journalist was being targeted and threatened by Pujari.

While talking with the ADC, a highly placed official of the crime branch, requesting anonymity said, “The step would hit the gangster below the belt, as it would precisely create a chain of cases, in which Pujari becomes a common accused. Considering this, the crime branch in future will also be able to apply

Being termed as immature and publicity hungry, the gangster had threatened the well-known veteran journalist from Mumbai in June.

The journalist, whose name has been witheld, in an interview to a TV news channel, had termed Pujari's acts as immature, which were in stark contrast to his contemporaries like Chhota Rajan and globally declared terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

As soon as the journalist left the studio of the TV news channel, he received a call on his mobile phone from an international number. The

caller claiming to be Pujari threatened the scribe with dire consequences if his acts are again termed as immature, informed sources in the crime branch.

In the interview, the journalist was discussing the threats by Pujari to industrialist Nusli Wadia in actor Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia's case. Four days after Zinta had lodged a complaint accusing Ness of abusing and insulting her in public on May 30 at an IPL match at Wankhede stadium, the gangster had threatened Ness' father, Nusli, asking him to stay away from the Zinta-Ness matter.

Two high-profile sex rackets in Mira Road busted 3 pimps held, 8 women rescued

leuths of the Thane (rural) police claim to have busted two high profile sex rackets operated by influential female pimps who lured rich clients with claims of having a host of aspiring models and TV starlets on

their roll.

The operation was jointly conducted by the AntiHuman Trafficking Wing (AHTW) and a special city police team led by Deputy SP Suhas Bawche on Saturday.

In the first case, the AHTW team led by API Sachin Gavas, established contact

and struck a deal with two female pimps through a decoy customer, following which a trap was laid near the McDonald’s outlet in Mira Road at about 4:30 pm on Saturday.

“We sent a decoy customer, who was told by the accused that he would have to pay Rs.3,000 for each girl. Our decoy agreed to the deal.

The pimps have been identified as Yasmin Mallit Shaikh and Pragya Taranath Saave (both aged 33 years).

Millionaire peddler nabbed with 1.5kg ganja

he Malwani police have arrested a millionaire drug peddler and seized more than 1.5 kg of marijuana and his car from which he was supplying the drug in Malwani late on Saturday night.

Salim Habib Khan alias Salim Tempo (52) is a well known face in Malwani for his drug peddling activities.

He is said to have a 15-mem-

ber-strong operation which supplies drugs to the entire locality.

According to Malwani police sources, “On Saturday night, officers who were conducting a nakabandi operation stopped Salim Tempo's car from trying to flee the spot. Our staff intercepted him and found ganja in his car worth lacks of rupees.”

After taking him to the station, the police found that there are 13 cases registered

he National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) has scheduled the screening of a documentary on the Vikings at its Godrej Theatre on September 15 and 22, after an initial screening on September 14. The documentary has been shot while a major exhibition on the Vikings was being featured in Britain. The exhibition is based on new archaeological discoveries.

The exhibition touches on most aspects of being a Viking – coins, weapons, swords, arms, ornaments, language, legacy, women, raids, compasses, voyages, and almost everything related to the Viking. The collection of coins, arms, ornaments and especially the swords gives an inside glimpse into the life of the Vikings as well as that era.

Judge S Y Kulkarni presiding over the tribunal ordered the two respondent owner of a car, Subhada Vinayak Jain and the Tata AIG General Insurance Ltd, to pay compensation to the claimant Baby Bhaskaran Thekkudukkathu, then employed with Patni Computers, along with seven per cent interest from July 2006, the date of filing of the claim.

"On account of injuries which the applicant sustained he would definitely face difficulties to some extent and the percentage of disability will affect his functional capacity to some extent. Therefore, I am of the view that a lumpsum amount Rs 5,00,000 must be granted to the applicant towards loss of income and future prospective loss of income, the judgement said.

"Considering oral as well as documentary evidence on record and several bills which are placed on record I am of the view that total amount Rs 3,96,991 can be granted to the applicant for hospital and medical expenses. Considering the nature of injuries age at the time of accident, an amount of Rs 1,00,000 was granted as compensation towards pain and suffering," the judge

said. The applicant was also granted Rs 3,12,500 towards actual loss of income for the period which he was absent from duty, Rs 2,00,000 towards loss of enjoyment of life and amenities in future, Rs 25,000 towards attendant charges, Rs 15,000 towards special diet, Rs 20,000 towards conveyance, Rs 25,000 towards future medical expenses, in all adding up to Rs 15,94,491.

Kashmir govt can W do precious little about relief work T

HE Opposition party in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) is taking the ruling alliance to task for not doing anything to cope with the flood disaster. What does the party expect the state govt to do?

Can it undertake the massive task of helping the flood-affected people? The state government has neither the funds nor any arrangement to cope with the problem. Its police cannot deal with the rescue work: They do not know how to go about the rescue work. It would be wrong to criticise them for lack of action: they have neither the training nor the equipment needed to rescue lakhs of people. All that the state government has done is to construct some temporary camps where the survivors could stay. CM Omar Abdullah cannot be blamed for his silence and inaction.

At last, however, he has initiated some action: He has called for a meeting of all political parties to hold discussions.

This meeting can do precious little, except perhaps express gratitude for the quiet, massive rescue and rehabilitation measures undertaken by Delhi. And the meeting should also thank the army’s selfless and round-the-clock work. It would be proper if the meeting also passes a resolution recording the services rendered by the army and also requesting it not to withdraw ever from Kashmir.

The rescue work is still not over. Over three-lakh people have still to be rescued. A large number of relief camps have to be constructed. Huge supplies of essential food items have to be provided. A massive survival operation is going on in J&K and the state government cannot be blamed if it can only stand and watch.

HEN will Prime Minister Narendra Modi expand his ministerial team?

A lot of people in the 279-strong BJP and 300-plus NDA desperately want a definitive answer to that question. In fact, a couple of BJP leaders who are not even MPs most anxiously await the next expansion. But if anyone claims to know, he is a liar. Unless, of course, it is Modi himself. For, this PM has no confidants, plays all his cards close to his chest, and, what is more, feels no obligation to allow someone else to have the final word.

And that is how it should be. The country has paid a huge price for a feckless Manmohan Singh in the prime minister’s chair for a decade. It is just as well at long last we have a prime minister who is the leader of the country in his own right and knows full well what it means to be prime minister.

Modi might be comfortable working with a small team, but you cannot prevent legions of ministerial hopefuls from dreaming of the day, sooner than later, when they would get a call from the PMO to keep their bandhgalas ready. Unfortunately, that happy day does not seem to come. First, when the ministry was sworn in, it was hoped there would be an expansion midway through the parliamentary session. It did not happen then.

Later, they believed that soon after the session Modi would undertake the exercise since the new ministers would require time to acquaint themselves with their charges before the start of the next session of parliament. It was believed that such an exercise could take place before the latest round of country-wide by-elections. This too did not happen.

Now, the optimists among the wannabe ministers have convinced themselves that the Modi team would have to be definitely expanded before the Assembly elections are held in the four States. After all, bestowing ministerships on MPs from the States set to elect new Assembles is supposed to yield rich electoral dividends. Remember how a few leading lights of the BJP from Bihar blamed the non-inclusion of a Bhumihar in the ministry for the adverse 4:6 result in the recent by-elections in the State.

Also, the ministerial hopefuls cite other reasons, more to convince themselves than anyone else, to make a case for an early expansion. Ministers handling multiple departments is the obvious one why there should be an expansion. ‘How can one man grapple with heavy-duty ministries such as Coal and

EANWHILE, Najma Heptullah, the Minister for Minority Affairs, is mighty worried that she will soon be 75, the cut-off age for anyone to continue being a minister in the Modi dispensation. Of course, she expects to continue even after her 75th birthday, but given that Modi has made no exception even for veterans like Murli Manohar Joshi, L.K. Advani, etc., there is little chance of Heptullah continuing as a minister. Maybe a more educated, more articulate minority member of the BJP will fill that slot which will help the party allay the fears of the minorities about its bona fides. Heptullah has been rather insensitive and tactless in her handling of the Minority Affairs Ministry.

No favours, no taint

D

ID he or did he not meet the PM? Everyone in the corporate world is curious to know whether the head of a powerful but most controversial industrial house has met Modi. There is utter confusion, with some in the ruling party insisting that such a meeting has indeed taken place while others equally emphatically denying it. All available evidence, however, suggests that such a meeting is yet to take place.

It so happens that the corporate boss expects the Modi Government to grant him a huge bonanza, especially because he had strongly backed Modi’s prime ministerial bid.

Yet, if we know anything about Modi, he is certain not to show any favours to any moneybags even if they had most generously funded the BJP campaign. Hence, the sullenness of our corporate boss who had had his way in the previous UPA regime.

The bottomline for this PM is very clear: Anything that is likely to even remotely taint his administration with the smudge of a scandal should not be, will not be, done. That clearly puts a number of corporate houses at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the Modi government since it is the extraordinary favours bought from the previous regimes which had helped them grow very big, indeed.

MHADA & CIDCO fail The MHADA and CIDCO were set up to provide cheap housing to the common man at a time when even shanties in Mumbai and the suburbs have become a distant dream.

State keen on JICA funding for Bandra-Versova sea link S 12

tate-run road development corporation MSRDC is looking at funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the ambitious Rs 5,975-crore BandraVersova sea link project.

"The JICA has been funding major infrastructure projects in the country at lower interest rates. To give pace to our ambitious 9.3-km Bandra-Versova sea link project, we will seek funding from this Japanese institution," Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) Joint Managing Director SM Ramchandani told PTI here over the weekend.

The Japanese lender has funded key projects like the multi-billion dollar Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and the upcoming Rs 23,136-crore 32.5 km ColabaSeepz Metro project in the megapolis, and has also expressed readiness to fund the proposed Mumbai TransHarbour Link (MTHL).

The Bandra-Versova sea link is proposed to be developed on a public private partnership model and will be a tolled project. It will have approaches at Carter Road and Juhu, besides the terminal points at Bandra and Versova.

Ramchandani said if the project gets JICA funding, the concession period for toll collection could also come down to that extent.

The corporation has also sought viability gap funding (VGF) from the Centre, which may be up to 20 per cent of the project cost.

leuths of the Valiv police have busted a gang of miscreants involved in theft of oil and copper components from the electric transformer units installed by private companies in the industrial belt of Vasai-Virar region.

According to the police the gang had recently damaged a high voltage electric trans-

former of an industrial estate in Kaman and decamped with a huge quantity of oil and copper winding wire.

The theft had led to power failure in the small scale industrial units.

A police team led by Assistant Police Inspector Rani Puri, activated her informer network and tracked down four gang members – Dheeraj Rajput (23), Govind Singh Rajput (26), Ravindra Govind Raote (19) and

Bhairav Singh Rajput (34) – from their hideout in Wada.

The police also recovered stolen oil worth more than Rs.1.6 lakh from the possession of the accused who are believed to be involved in similar crimes in the industrial belt of the region.

A case under section 379 of the IPC has been registered against the quartet who were remanded to police custody till September 15 by the District Sessions Court.

The first 5.6-km Bandra-Worli sea link, which was built by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), was thrown open for public in 2009 after 23 years of being under construction.

When asked about the proposed 3.4-km Worli-Haji Ali sea link project, he said, "The project has been stalled as Reliance Infrastructure, which had bagged the contract for constructing the bridge, could not achieve financial closure.

"But we can still go ahead with the project as we have already done the ground work on it. But since a final decision had to be taken by the government, there is status quo on the proposal."

ith the Japanese government taking a lead in funding the megapolis' many signature infrastructure projects, the World Bank has evinced interest in funding the proposed CharkopDahisar and Wadala-Teen Hath Naka Metro projects.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has already committed to fund the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) two ambitious projects -- the just announced Rs.23,136-crore Colaba-Seepz Metro and the 22km Rs.9,630crore Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), which still remains on paper.

"The MMRDA is undertaking large infrastructure projects which require huge investments. Recently, the JICA has committed to fund-

ing two major projects in the city and it has also shown interest in funding some more projects as well.

"At the same time, the World Bank has also expressed interest in funding two other proposed metro projects which we will be soon taking up," MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Sethi told PTI. The World Bank had earlier funded two phases of Mumbai Urban Transport Projects implemented by the authority. While phase I involved Santacruz-Chembur and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link roads, phase II was to strengthen the suburban railway networks and improving its operational efficiency.

Metro line with the proposed Dahisar-Charkop corridor by converting the entire line underground instead of the originally planned elevated line.

The proposed 40.2-km Dahisar-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro line is estimated to cost Rs 28,900 crore with all the 37 stations underground.

The cost of 32-km CharkopBandra-Mankhurd corridor was originally pegged at Rs 7,660 crore, while the 7.8-km Charkop-Dahisar corridor was estimated to cost Rs 4,680 crore.

The state has also cleared a 30.8-km-long metro link connecting Wadala on the easter fringe to Teen Hath Naka on the northwestern fringe that will have 31 stations. The link will have 10 underground stations while the rest will be on elevated line.

While inflation headed down, industrial growth tumbled to 0.5% in July compared to an upwardly revised 3.9% growth in June. Slower growth was led by a fall in capital goods output and a continued decline in consumer goods output (y-o-y). However, higher growth in capital goods output is likely to resume next month due to a low base from last year. Going forward, domestic demand is expected to strengthen as suggested by recent surveys on industrial outlook and consumer confidence. For FY15, Crisil Research forecasts GDP to grow by 5.5%, with industrial growth expected to rise to 3.6% from 0.4% in FY14. A more optimistic Moody’s expects growth to approach a 6% pace by year's end. So the present disappointment may just be short-lived...

PI inflation fell to 7.8% in August from 8% last month as a sharp decline in core inflation (inflation excluding food and fuel) more than offset a marginal pick-up in food inflation.

For the first time since January 2012, core CPI inflation fell below the 7.0% mark to 6.8% y-o-y in August. The seasonally adjusted month-on-month momentum in the core also fell to 0.3% in August from 0.6% last month.

The fall in core inflation was driven by an over 1 percentage point decline in inflation in 2 categories; transport & communication and household requisites. Both of these categories, (together having a weight of 30% in the core CPI index) favourably benefited from a very strong base effect from August last year. Excluding these two, core CPI inflation was almost unchanged from last month at 7.7%. A significant decline in petrol prices (Rs 5.4 per litre since July in Mumbai) due to lower crude oil prices globally, is also likely to have contributed to the downward price pressures in transport & communication. “We expect this to continue going forward as no further hike in diesel prices is expected as long as crude oil prices stay at current levels.

The under recovery in diesel has fallen to 8 paise per litre after the August 31 hike� believes Crisil.

In the case of food articles, price pressures were seen building up in pulses, condiments & spices and milk & milk products. Inflation in each of these categories has been rising for the last 3 months. Inflation in pulses in fact rose by 1.1 percentage points to 6.9% y-o-y in August, and needs to be watched closely as the crop has been impacted by weak monsoons this year.

According to the CRISIL Deficient Rainfall Impact Parameter (DRIP) – which captures both the magnitude of the rainfall shock (measured as the deficiency of rainfall) as well as the vulnerability of a region (measured as a percentage of un-irrigated area) – pulses and coarse cereals are likely to have suffered some damage due to the late onset of monsoons coupled with heavy rains in certain parts of the country this year.

The DRIP scores for pulses and

coarse cereals this year are similar to (or slightly worse) 2012 when inflation in these categories had surged to over 13-14% in the second half of the year.

This year, given the steps taken by the government, we do not expect a similar surge in prices but any build of price pressures needs to be monitored closely. The government has already offered a line of credit to states to import pulses to compensate for domestic supply shortage and keep prices in check. In the case of cereals fortunately, the affected crops, namely jowar, bajra have a low weight (2.4% together) in the CPI food basket.

Going ahead, says Crisil “From next month onwards, food inflation is likely to taper off as a favourable base effect from last year kicks in - food inflation had surged to an average 13% during September-December 2013 due to a supply-side shock to vegetable prices.

Moreover, low increase (3-4%) in minimum support prices of rice and wheat and the offloading of excess stocks will also help keep a check on food inflation. Food grain stocks in the central pool are currently at 17.3 million (mn) tonnes for rice and 35.5 mn tonnes for wheat – both of which are 2.5 times the quantity mandated by buffer norms and strategic reserve requirements.

However, as a result of weak monsoons and its perceived impact on food prices, household inflation expectations have risen. This is reflected in the RBI’s quarterly survey, where the three-month ahead inflation expectations rose in September quarter after declining for the previous 2 quarters.

Rising demand with a gradual recovery in GDP growth and rising inflation expectations may create an upside risk for core inflation in the coming months.

Even if crude oil prices stay low, once the favourable base effect wears off in January, there is a possibility of headline CPI inflation rising slightly above 8% toward the end of the fiscal year. This means that there is no room for a rate cut in FY15.�

As regards IIP growth; it fell to 0.5% in July compared to an upwardly revised 3.9% growth in June and an average 4.2% growth in Q1.

BI Mutual Fund is eyeing entry in the top-5 club of the domestic mutual fund sector by financial year 2015. "We are hoping to end the year with Rs 90,000 crore AUM from Rs 77,000 crore now. With this, we would like to be one of the top five MF companies," SBI MF Managing Director & CEO Dinesh K Khara said.

SBI MF ranks sixth in the MF industry currently. Speaking at the launch of three-year close ended SBI Equity Opportunities Fund Series-I, Khara said, "I am pacing accordingly for the top five league." He said the AUM gap between its immediate competitor was around Rs 17,000 crore, which had come down to Rs 9000 crore.

ollar/Rupee remains a stuck in a phase of no trend. The hey days of large swings of 2011 to 2013 has now given way to many days of up and down swings with little progress and a few days of short-lived quick trends. Over the month of September, till date, FIIs have poured nearly USD 2.6 billion in debt and equity markets combined. At the same time, offshore and onshore speculators have preferred to sell upticks towards 61.00 handle, as the NDF market continues to quote a decent spread under the onshore forwards. As a matter of fact, 3 month forwards of USD/INR is quoted at a discount of 30/35 paise under the onshore rate.

However, over the last one week, the spread has narrowed somewhat, due to the short covering demand from the specs, on account of broad based strengthening of the US Dollar against other global currencies. At the same time, back home, state run banks have shown decent appetite to buy US Dollars in the forward market, to help RBI to accumulate a war chest for future need. Thanks to the relentless demand for forwards, forwards premium at the longer end, for example, the 12 month forward which is at 505 paise, has remained elevated in spite of a fall in short term rates. Importers have also stepped into cover their near term payments, below 60.50 on spot. The combination of all these have led to firming up of the USD/INR spot rates from 60.20 towards 61.00 levels on spot.

Globally, we are also seeing the long "financial asset" and short "hard asset" trade gain momentum and rotation of money flow could be happening from commodities, real estate and real currencies like bullion, towards equity and credit. One can argue that, the probable inflection years of this shift could have been 2011-2012. As we have said in the past, that inflation is a monetary phenomenon. Keep an eye on the Scottish referendum, as a “no” vote can lead to a risk on rally in GBP pairs as well as risk on in the European risk assets as well. However, a ‘yes” vote can lead to increase uncertainty in Europe, as it can fan similar independence movement in Spain.

Technically, USD/INR faces resistance between 61.00/5 and then between 61.25/30 and hence, stop loss buy orders could be congregating around those levels. Therefore, a move beyond 61.30, can cause a short covering spike towards 61.75/62.00 levels on spot.

Support is around 60.70/65 and then between 60.20/30 levels.

In Brand Building Credibility Is Vital

onsumers buy brands because they believe in them. This is true for a branded product or a branded service. When consumers don’t trust a brand they do not buy or consume it. One of the largest reasons for people buying brands again and again is the credibility the brand offers to the consumers.

In brand building, credibility is vital to the success of any brand. There are many brands which make claims that they provide various benefits. However, a consumer does not gulp down these claims easily. He is a prospect who can be converted only if he is not suspect. He needs credibility. Then he will respect the brand. With the market getting flooded with brands consumers are anxious to know about the authenticity of the claims made by companies.

Many companies have taken the consumers for a ride by making false claims or misleading them. This has led to an atmosphere of suspicion at the consumer level whether it be a corporate consumer or a kid or a housewife or a senior citizen. This makes it all the more important to have true honest and correct claims made so that people believe in the brand.

How do you build credibility in your brand?

The answer is shown in a six step process recommended by me.

First Step: The first element in the six step recommendation from my side is to make sure that you have a good product and a good service which gives benefits to the consumer and is valued by the consumer. This is crucial because only a good product or a good service can become a good credible brand.

Second Step: The second step in my six step recommendation is to ensure that the product or service experience during usage by the consumer is positive. This would lead to a positive brand experience which would be recalled pleasantly and with a smile by the consumer.

Third Step: The third step in my recommended strategy is to ensure regular and consistent customer satisfaction and not just a one off good experience. Credibility is built over a period of time. People believe in your brand if they constantly get good utility and value from the brand, thus not giving regular service or performance leads to irregularity, which could lead to customers not having faith in your brands.

Fourth Step: The fourth step in my recommended strategy is to make sure that your brand meets and delivers the promise it makes to the customers. There should not be a case of over promise even if you have a very good product or service. Over promise reduces reliability leading to discontent thereby reducing credibility.

Fifth Step: The fifth step in my recommended strategy would be to provide evidence whether in the form of facts or statistics which make the consumer believe the benefits offered.

Sixth Step: The final and the sixth element of my recommended strategy for credibility is generating good word of mouth publicity wherein satisfied customers speak well of you informally or formally through testimonials. This definitely enhances credibility.

Thus to build your brand, ensure credibility, through my six step recommended strategy which would help increase sales, profit and goodwill and be mutually beneficial to both, customers and marketers.

But a more concerted push towards a ‘pro-jobs policy’ is required to structurally alter India’s employment profile. This, says Crisil involves, among other reforms, easing labour market rigidities, building world-class physical infrastructure, and alleviating power shortage

HOW A PRO-JOBS POLICY CAN RESHAPE INDIA’S EMPLOYMENT PROFILE

ince taking reins in May, the NDA government has showed intent to foster policies that create jobs. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s Budget pronouncements on July 10 focused on supporting labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, food processing, construction and tourism. And subsequent moves to amend labour laws also reflect this approach.

“We believe the time is ripe for that one big, concerted push towards a pro-jobs policy that, along with other reforms, will ease labour-market rigidities, help build world-class physical infrastructure, and mitigate power shortages. This is an imperative to alter India’s employment profile.” believes Crisil Research.

If pursued and implemented, how much employment can pro-jobs policies generate by 2020? Here’s Crisil's math:

69 million jobs can be added in the non-agriculture sector by 2020 if the government pursues a projobs policy compared with 41 million under status quo.

A push to labour-intensive manufacturing through changes in labour laws, along with improvement in physical infrastructure and power availability, can create nearly 11 million manufacturing jobs by 2020 compared with a loss of 4 million under status quo.

Yet, the reality is India’s manufacturing sector won’t be able to generate adequate employment and the labour-intensive services sector will have to pitch in. We believe the labour-intensive services sectors such as trade, hotels & restaurants, education & health, and personal & community services can add another 36 million jobs by 2020. These services will benefit from changing consumption patterns at households, a focus on urbanisation, and a push to education and better healthcare.

With job opportunities in manufacturing and services rising, excessive push to unproductive job creation in the construction sector won’t be necessary.

In recent years, construction employment soared in part because of a large number of projects under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). We expect 13 million additions to construction jobs by 2020 compared with nearly 24 million under the status-quo scenario.

This pattern of job creation can have a positive impact on lowering income disparities. A higher proportion of labour force finding employment in industry and services will mean more inclusive growth. Thus, the government’s focus on effective implementation of pro-jobs policies coupled with education and skill development of youth will mean 10 million less people will be forced into farm employment by fiscal 2020. Our earlier report1, which had estimated India’s employment potential up to fiscal 2019, had cautioned workers will be forced to stay back on farms because of fewer opportunities elsewhere, had the policy status-quo prevailed.

Reversing the slide in labour-intensive sectors The NDA government has indicated breaking away from past policies that favoured capital-intensive produc

tion, and appears keen on pushing labour-intensive sectors to nurture inclusivity. Its maiden budget on July 10 and the subsequent push to introduce changes in labour laws are a reflection of this.

Manufacturing sectors such as textiles and food processing, which are huge employers, have been promised support, too.

The budget also pushed for growth in construction and tourism, which we believe are steps in the right direction.

To be sure, labour-intensive manufacturing growth alone will not create the millions of jobs needed, so labour intensive services will have to play an equally important role. In this report, we define labour-intensive sectors as those requiring more than 5 workers (above average) to produce Re 1 million of real output (GDP). To arrive at these, we mapped the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) employment data with GDP data classified as per the National Industrial Classification (NIC) 2004-05.

Labour-intensive manufacturing contributes only 5.5% of GDP currently Labour-intensive manufacturing industries contribute merely 5.5% to India’s GDP today – a rate that has stagnated since the 1970s (Chart 1).

Within the overall manufacturing sector, such industries contribute only 35% of output, but employ nearly 80% of the employment in the sector. Wood and products, textiles, leather, food products and related sectors, and non-metallic mineral products, are the most labour-intensive in India, requiring more than 10 workers to produce Re 1 million of output.

In contrast, capital-intensive sectors have a larger share of output but lower contribution to manufacturing employment. Their share of India’s GDP has risen to 11% during fiscals 2011 to 2013, from 6.8% in the 1970s. But they have low labour intensity. For example, the basic metals sector requires only one worker

to produce Re 1 million of output.

Over time, labour-intensive sectors have themselves seen a rise in capital intensity of production.

This is in part due to excessively stringent labour laws, which kept employers away from hiring more and led to a decline in labour intensity over time (Chart 2). In fiscal 2012, a dozen workers were

Manufacturing alone cannot absorb the workers joining the labour force in the coming years, and services will have to play a crucial role. Also, successful implementation of policies focused on pushing labour-intensive sectors will people continue to come out of agriculture employment. Net-net, we have reasons to believe the contours of employment in India are set to change for the better in the coming years.

required to produce Re 1 million of real GDP in labour-intensive manufacturing sectors, much below the 20 required in fiscal 2000. While some decline in labour intensity is inevitable with a rise in labour productivity over time, labour laws in India are also to some extent responsible for the high share of the unorganised sector in labour-intensive manufacturing -- nearly half of the production in labour-intensive sectors is in the unorganised sector.

Crisil believes four manufacturing sub-sectors -- textiles, food products and related sectors, non-metallic mineral products and transport equipment -- can drive employment creation over the next 5 years.

These were identified by creating a framework that

incorporates sector-wise labour intensity and potential to grow led by domestic demand or export growth.

The first factor evaluates the employment absorptive capacity and, combined with the second, zeroes in on industries that can contribute significantly to employment creation going forward.

Services to the rescue The manufacturing sector has seen a sharp decline in labour intensity over time, even in sectors that are highly labour-intensive. This is inevitable because huge step-ups in productivity are vital to achieve global and local competitiveness. Ever-changing technology and more productive processes (such as increased usage of robots in manufacturing) will make it easier to substitute technology for labour. In contrast, the nature of activity in a large part of the services sector is such that it makes technology substitution for productivity gains difficult. Moreover, as labour-intensive services have a larger share (29%) ofIndia’s GDP -despite low labour intensity relative to manufacturing -- they are large employers.

Overall labour intensity in services stood at 3.7 in fiscal 2012 compared with 6.1 in 2005. We have identified three sub-sectors (with intensities higher than the sector average): education & health, trade, hotels & restaurants, and community, social & personal services which could potentially be largeemployers. Together, they accounted for 80 million jobs in fiscal 2012 compared with 30 million in the labour intensive manufacturing sectors.

A pro-jobs push will yield 51 million more jobs in labour-intensive manufacturing and services If the new government maintains relentless focus on implementation of policies, we estimate there will be significant additions to employment in services and manufacturing – which we call the ‘pro-job sce-

nario’. The alternative is a ‘status quo scenario’ which shows what would happen if previous policies continued.

Both the scenarios assume average real GDP growth of 7% between fiscals 2015 and 2020, with manufacturing sector growth at about 6% and services sector at about 8%. The pattern of manufacturing and services growth, however, differs across the two scenarios.

In addition, both scenarios factor a slower decline in employment intensity across sectors compared to the recent history (2005-2012). In our report Of growth and missed opportunity: What 5% / 6% / 9% GDP growth will mean for India in the next 5 years, we had predicted productivity growth will improve going forward, but won’t surge to the highs seen in fiscals 2005 and 2012. As a result, labour intensity -- or the number of people required to produce a unit of output -- will not witness as sharp a fall as seen between fiscals 2005 and 2012. This will support job creation in the economy. We further assume that a decline in employment intensity will be even slower in the projobs scenario compared to the status-quo scenario.

This is because GDP growth in this scenario will be led by labour-intensive sectors which are known for slower productivity gains compared to the capital intensive sectors.

With jobs in manufacturing and services rising, unproductive job creation in the construction sector will not be necessary, thereby improving productivity.

The NDA government aims to make NREGS-based jobs more productive in nature. And if that happens, it will reduce the per-project employment requirement of the scheme. In addition, the outlay for NREGS is unlikely to see a sharp increase given the government’s fiscal position, so overall employability in construction will be curbed.

FIVE FACTORS THAT IMPACT YOUR CIBIL SCORE With banks and RBI becoming more and more stringent about the loan eligibility of borrowers, you are probably aware by now that it is imperative for you to have a good Cibil score in order to qualify for a loan with an attractive rate of interest. But have you ever wondered what goes into the constitution of your Cibil score? Here is a lowdown on the factors that have the greatest impact on your Cibil score.

Your repayment history (35%): The first and most important thing that impacts your credit score is your repayment history and accounts for 35% of your credit score. You need to clear all your bills and loan repayments well within the dates stipulated in order to maintain a good repayment history.Even a single default has a negative impact on your score.

What you owe your lenders (30%): There are two basic considerations when it comes to calculating what you owe your lenders which is referred to as credit utilization.

First, is the total of your credit card limits sanctioned to you and secondly the percentage of your money you are utilizing.

Hence your credit utilization ratio is calculated as balance outstanding on all your credit cards as a percentage of total credit limit on all your credit cards.

How long have you been servicing debt (15%): This may come as a surprise, but the amount of time you have been using credit also has an important bearing of 15% on your credit score. Therefore, if you have been servicing debt for a longer period of time and handling it responsibly, i.e. by making timely repayments etc., it is going to have a positive impact on your Cibil score.

The amount of new credit you have taken or applied for (10%): Everytime you apply for a new credit such as a loan, credit card etc, the banks and other financial institutions run an inquiry on your Cibil report to check your credit history to find out about your financial health and repayment capability.If there have been too many such inquiries on your Cibil report, it has a negative bearing on your credit score.

The mix of credit (10%): Even though ours is primarily an EMI led generation, Indians are by nature averse to the idea of credit. So if you have been avoiding credit like the plague and have a single type of credit, you cannot have a good credit score, especially if you have only unsecured loans like credit cards or a personal loan.

Now that you know what goes into the constitution of your credit score, you can use this information to find out the areas in which you are lagging and thus improve your credit score. A good credit score will ensure that you get a loan without any hassles at best interest rates when you really need one.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Friday (September 12, 2014) a net 19.80 points (0.24%) and closed at the 8105 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 8087 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 1.00 p.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8071 points level at 1.10 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 8114 points level at 3.00 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 43 points and closed above the psychologically important 8100 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 30 were gainers, while 20 stocks closed in the red. Buying was witnessed in healthcare, consumer durables, auto, FMCG, banking, technology, infra and IT stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in power and capital goods stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 5.74%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 873 were gainers, 721 were losers and 33 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone.

The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD fell below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7816 points level.

All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 8042 point’s level.

Exports market continues to remain strong; management maintains positive outlook on revenue and profitability growth in future.

We revise our earnings estimate upward to factor in further improved outlook on mining exports growth over FY15 and FY16. Tweak operating margin for FY16 due to operating leverage. We expect ferro-chrome (key raw material) prices to remain stable in the medium term. Factoring these changes, we arrive at a DCF based target price of Rs 1180 and maintain 'BUY' recommendation on company's stock.

Conference call highlights: We have interacted with the management of AIA engineering to get an overall perspective on the business environment in the domestic as well as international markets.

Following are the key takeaways of the conference call: Company has been experiencing meaningful demand for mill internals driven by the mining segment (primarily exports). AIA is present in several countries across US/ Europe and Asia and has a robust sales force in place to capture the growing demand for its products.

Company has commendably gained market share in the mining space through FY08-14 and continues to report revenue growth.

We believe that the company has now reached a scale in miming and its operating margins could improve to 22-23% levels through FY14-15E. Company continues to maintain its leadership position in the industry. Its strong debt free balance sheet accounted for low financial charges that resulted in the PAT of Rs 397 mn for the quarter.

Valuation and Recommendation: At the current price of Rs 957, company's stock is trading at 17.8 x P/E and 12 x EV/ EBITDA on FY16E earnings. In view of upside from current levels, we maintain BUY rating on AIA stock with a DCF based revised target price of Rs 1180.

We find the pharma business undervalued (at 25% disc. to peers, adjusted for cash) and expect a re-rating on the back of (a) strong EPS growth of 29% over FY15-FY17E led by a 21% revenue CAGR, (b) Rs 250/sh potential cash distribution to shareholders from the Agila deal, and (c) a lean balance sheet with improving return ratios. Payout of surplus cash from Agila deal provides valuation cushion: STR is likely to receive US$ 250mn from Mylan this month upon completion of a year since the USFDA warning letter on its divested plant. A further amount in escrow (US$ 100mn) and tax contingency (US$ 40mn) is receivable over the next four years; adjusting for some spend (20%), the amount would be distributable to shareholders, per management.

Valuation gap to narrow: STR is trading at 11.3x one-year fwd P/E (excash receivable), a 25% discount to mid-sized peers – this should narrow given a strong balance sheet (net cash) and rising return ratios amid a robust business outlook. Coal block allocations: Vital issues, questions still remain

he Supreme Court of India has declared illegal all coal block allocations made in the last 17 years during the tenure of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and other Governments. The Supreme Court held all 218 coal blocks allocated from 19932010 as unlawful. The Court also raised serious questions on the allocation process. Even at the stage when the decision on whether to cancel these allocations or not was yet to come, it was obvious that answers to some more questions as well were still required. For example, as the main Opposition, did the BJP play its role correctly in this scam?

After the Court verdict, will people responsible for this scam get punished? What will be the stand of the Court with regard to Manmohan Singh who was the Coal Minister as well as the Prime Minister? And, one of the biggest questions that 'Chauthi Duniya' has been raising for the past four years and which it is still raising: is this coal scam merely of 1 lakh 86 thousand crore rupees or of 26 lakh crore rupees?

In its very first report 'Chauthi Duniya' had said this that this is not just a scam. It is the biggest scam in the history of Indian democracy in which the country has suffered a loss of 26 lakh crore rupees. After reading this sentence there is no need to be surprised or to disbelieve. Why? Because 'Chauthi Duniya'’s claim is not based on any airy assessment, nor on any makebelieve number, but is based on documents presented by the Standing Committee of Parliament on

coal. These documents reveal that due to allocation of coal blocks in an illegal manner, the Government has suffered a revenue loss of 26 lakh crore rupees and this was the information given to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) as well.

The interesting thing is that a BJP Member of Parliament, Hansraj Ganga Ram Ahir was also a member of the Standing Committee of Parliament on coal, and he had given information to the CAG too. Besides, an initial report of the CAG was also leaked, after which the media put the cost of this coal scam at over10 lakh crore rupees. However, the CAG had said later that this news was baseless. Be that as it may, let us look at the various aspects of the mega coal scam which 'Chauthi Duiniya' had brought to light through its various reports over the past four years.

First, it is essential to know what were the main issues raised by the Supreme Court in its judgment. The Court said that in the coal block allocations, an unbiased and transparent process was not adopted. In the meantime, even after the judgment of the Court in this matter, the ongoing investigation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will continue. Actually, this judgement of the Court has come as a result of an appeal by advocate M.L. Sharma, NGO Common Cause, and Sudeep Shrivastava, in which, citing violation of rules in allocation of coal blocks a demand was made to cancel them. While delivering judgment on this appeal, the Court held the allocations to be illegal. According to the Court, allocations done after July 14, 1993 and 36 meetings of the screening committee and as

per the discretionary powers of the Government were done in an arbitrary and illegal manner.

When 'Chauthi Duniya' first published the report that under the UPA-2 Government, a coal scam of 26 lakh crore rupees had taken place, maybe it was difficult for anybody to believe it. At that time neither had the CAG report come and nor did anyone think that such a big scam could happen. At that time, 'Chauthi Duniya' also asked Nitin Gadkari, Shyam Jaju of the BJP (the Opposition party) and the Left parties to raise this issue, but nobody paid attention. BJP MP Hansraj Ganga Ram Ahir, who was a member of the Standing Committee on Coal, certainly tried from his side that the Opposition with all its power should attack the Government over this scam, but he too got isolated in his own party.

The BJP at that time silently watched the drama. In a democracy, when the Opposition stays quiet on such a big issue, then its meaning can be easily understood. An active

Opposition is one which doesn’t let any issue go out of its hands and for that it doesn’t have to wait for some CAG report. The humorous thing is that BJP MP Hansraj Ganga Ram Ahir himself was equipped and armed with all papers and proofs. If the BJP had wanted, it could have targeted the UPA since 2011 itself, but it didn’t do so. Why it didn’t do so, and instead of believing the documents of the Standing Committee of Parliament why it waited for two years for the report of the CAG to come out, only the BJP can give answers to these questions.

The mega coal scam is unique and unprecedented in itself, because it was in this scam that a lot of things happened for the first time which had obviously never happened before. For example, the Supreme Court didn’t believe the words of even the Prime Minister and asked for an affidavit. The Law Minister (Ashwii Kumar) lied and said that he didn’t see the CBI report and didn’t ask for changes to be made in it, whereas the CBI accepted that be-

fore presenting the report in Supreme Court, the Law Minister and the PMO saw it and also made changes in it. Charges of changing the CBI report were levied against Kumar and in the end because of this he lost his position as a Minister. The Supreme Court called the CBI a caged parrot and said it is important to free the parrot. The Supreme Court, raising questions on the work of the late Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati expressed deep annoyance and got the entire CBI investigation conducted under its watch.

In this entire matter one of the biggest questions that comes up now after the judgment of the Supreme Court is: will former prime minister Manmohan Singh take responsibility for the illegal allocations? It is said that former PM Manmohan Singh is an honest person. Earlier, the people of the country accepted this as a fact, but after scams like 2G and the coal block allocations, people of the country started questioning the meaning of that honesty because of which scams of lakhs of crores of rupees happened. In the mega coal scam, the most important fact is the name of former PM Manmohan Singh was also involved. There was the allegation against the former prime minister that when the command of the Coal Ministry was in his hands, it was then that the coal blocks were allocated. The question is: as the Coal Minister, wasn’t it his responsibility that the coal blocks were allocated in an illegal manner? When the Supreme Court itself has held the coal block allocations to be illegal, then the question is: will former PM Manmohan Singh be held responsible for it?

Cong’s one-eyed role in the Opposition Santosh Bharatiya

here are many tales, stories and sayings in Indian society which have become aphorisms after the experience of hundreds and thousands of years. I’ll relate a story to you. There were two neighbours.

One neighbour was very jealous of the other neighbour and his jealousy was such that to harm his neighbour he could take help from anyone. He suddenly thought, ‘let me arrange for some bad portents or omens for my neighbour every morning’. There are many ways and types of bad portents in Indian so-

ciety, like if a cat walks across one’s path, it is considered a bad portent or omen. Similarly, if a person sees a one-eyed person, then the beholder considers it to be a bad omen. So the jealous neighbour thought I can’t arrange for a cat to cross his path every day, but I can show him the face of a one-eyed person everyday. He searched for a one-eyed person, but could not find one. So then he pierced his own eye and took a decision to show his own one-eyed face to his neighbor every morning so that it would serve as a bad omen.

In Indian politics, this story aptly fits the Congress. At this time, in place of jealousy the Congress party seems to be making a plan to pierce its eye with idle words as a bad portent for its neighbour. Where the Congress should be seen taking the people along with it and fighting the ruling party, there it is spending its entire time in in-fighting. Who to remove, who to be made to sit at home, who to be put in ice, not to

go amongst the people. This story of four phrases has become the story of the Congress. Neither does the Congress have enmity with anyone, nor does the Congress have any friendship with anyone. But it certainly seems that the Congress has forgotten the importance of democracy. If in a democracy the Congress has found the place of the Opposition, it means that it has got five years of time to take up the questions of the public and make people stand with it, to enthuse the public and to fight disappointment. But perhaps the Congress does not understand the meaning of the word ‘Opposition’, which is why it made even the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha into something to be taken to court and when the Supreme Court did not pay attention, created an atmosphere as if it was begging for the post of Leader of the Opposition. Is it only by getting the post of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha that the role of Opposition

can be fulfilled? Perhaps not.

The Congress forgot a lesson from its last ten years rule. In the last ten years, the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the Opposition and Leader of the Opposition and Sushma Swaraj held the post of Leader of the Opposition, and before that it was Lal Krishna Advani.

Despite having such heavyweight leaders, the Bharatiya Janata Party did not fulfill any meaningful role as the Opposition and it cannot be forgiven for that, because it raised for the first time a question mark over the dignity of the Opposition. But despite this, the wrong policies of the Government, wrong decisions by the Government, and the anger at the problems created by the Congress did not allow it to get even the numbers to enable it to capture the post of the Leader of the Opposition, and it handed over power to an Opposition which did not fulfill a competent or a meaningful role.

Perhaps the Congress wants to walk along the same path. Now, in

the Congress there can be seen either an absence of leaders who can think and understand politically or those who can think and understand politically consider it a waste to state what they want to say. During the time of the Bihar Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi applied his full strength, but he applied that power to such an organisation which he or his colleagues never allowed to evolve. As a result, in Bihar only four Congress MLAs were elected. Oneand-a-half years later there were the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, but the Congress did not learn any lesson and did not make any programme to strengthen the organisation in Uttar Pradesh. The party MPs were not ‘used’ in Uttar Pradesh, nor were the MLAs and nor were those leaders who were neither MPs nor MLAs, but who had a standing in society. An idle-inanimate organisation remained there in Uttar Pradesh and sitting in Delhi the exercise of trying to make this lame duck organisation move was carried out.

In Canada, a writer visits the Indian storyteller Pi Patel and asks him to tell his life story.

Pi tells the story of his childhood in Pondicherry, India, and the origin of his nickname. One day, his father, a zoo owner, explains that the municipality is no longer supporting the zoo and he has hence decided to move to Canada, where the animals the family owns would also be sold. They board on a Japanese cargo ship with the animals and out of the blue, there is a storm, followed by a shipwrecking. Pi survives in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a male Bengal tiger nicknamed Richard Parker.

They are adrift in the Pacific Ocean, with aggressive hyena and Rickard Parker getting hungry. Pi needs to find a way to survive. Star Movies, 9 p.m.

He also shares that he would like to marry Deepika Padukone because she is tall, just like him.

Radha and Suraj have been friends since childhood. Gopal has been in love with Radha ever since they spent a few years together as kids. Years later, Gopal’s guardian proposes to Radha a marriage with Gopal, and she accepts. She finds a loving husband in Gopal, and when Gopal asks who she loves the most, first she lists her mother, then her brother, and in a voice-over she says that she loves Gopal the most. But Gopal thinks that Radha is spending too much time with Suraj, and starts to suspect them, so much so that he asks Radha to leave the house.

After Radha leaves the house, she receives a divorce notice from Gopal, which tears her heart apart. CVO, 9 p.m.

Sonia and Naina Sehgal (both played by Kajol) are twins. The two are completely different from each other, Sonia being the outgoing twin and Naina being the shy twin. At the same time the police are hunting for a killer and rapist. The man Gokul Pandit is a cold-blooded animal and has chosen Naina for his next target. However tragedy strikes when Gokul brutally kills Sonia.

Naina is distraught and vows to hunt down Gokul. Gokul soon goes after Naina and she realizes she needs help to overcome her fear of him. With that she meets Suraj Singh Rathod, a retired and blind major and he helps her physically and mentally to defeat her fear of Gokul. After an argument Suraj refuses to meet Naina and she decides to go after Gokul alone without the help of the police or Suraj. B4U, 9 p.m.

Shamsher Singh Rajput lives a poor lifestyle in British India along with his widowed mom, a sister, Asha, and makes a living through crime. He is in love with a gypsy dancer, Reshma, and wants to marry her, but has to content with her suitor, Jagga. He is arrested by the corrupt British Police, jailed, and beaten mercilessly. When the British leave India, he gets out of prison, finds out that his mother will have nothing to do with him, seeks the assistance of Vijay, locates Jagga and kills him. He returns and finds out that Asha is living a wayward life, locates her in a bar with several men, and brings her home. When Vijay shows an interest in Asha, Shamsher warns him, and their friendship ends.

The protagonist of the movie is born with a divine grace of Lord Shiva and the boy’s parents are advised to name him as Mallikarjuna as he is destined to accomplish a great work. During his childhood, Mallikarjuna faces a great tragedy as his parents and grandparents are killed by a huge feline creature when they are returning from Kashi. This incident leaves his younger sister, Sailu paralyzed from the waist and hence renders her lame (Sailu had a talent for dancing before this incident). This disaster makes Malli to become an atheist. Meanwhile, the scene shifts to the focus of a demon named Andhakaasura. Zee Cinema, 9 p.m.

alman Khan returns as the host of the eighth season of 'Bigg Boss' but the superstar says he was reluctant to be a part of the reality TV series this time around as the 2013 edition was extremely "tiring and painful".

The 48-year-old actor courted controversy last season when he was accused of being biased towards Tanishaa Mukerji and Armaan Kohli by other participants as well as the viewers.

Salman, however, defended himself saying he was simply taking a stand and not anyone's side. "I did not want to do 'Bigg Boss 8' because it is too tiring and painful. I have my own set of problems and here I am solving 10-12 problems of others. These people involve me and somehow I get involved. But if you see something you have to take a stand," Salman told PTI in an interview.

"I came back because I liked the format. You get to learn so much by seeing contestants' reactions, even though you know you might have reacted in the same manner," he said.

This is Salman's third stint as the anchor of the celebrity reality show, besides being a guest host on season 5, which was hosted by Sanjay Dutt. 'Bigg Boss 8' is set to premiere on September 21 on Colors. The show has had its share of controversies in each season and Salman says it is a catch-22 situation for him.

"The format of the show is such that there are controversies. If something does not happen then people, including my own family and friends say, 'The episode was thanda'. And if something happens, then they say it was too much, so at the end you don't know what to do," Salman said.

The actor, who faced a lot of online criticism from 'Bigg Boss 7' winner Gauhar Khan and boyfriend Kushal Tandon, said he will continue to take stands s that is the only way to save the contestants from embarrassing

themselves on TV. "As a host it is important to take a stand for the contestants. Sometimes it looks like you are taking a stand for yourself but it is for them because you know how they are being projected outside. "These people have come in the house to get work. The fact is that if they are superb in the show, then they will not get work outside but they don't understand that," he said.

Salman said that whatever is shown on 'Bigg Boss' is the real reaction of contestants and not scripted at all.

"The best and scariest part of the game is that it is not scripted. Whatever contestants do in the house is correct because that is what the game demands. So either you play it with whole heart or whole mind. They should play smartly," he said, adding that he would be a disaster inside the house as an inmate.

When asked if he

will promote Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming Diwali release 'Happy New Year' on the show, Salman said, "We will do enough promotions for 'Happy New Year', the team does not need to worry."

'Bigg Boss' is the Indian version of international reality show 'Big Brother'. A number of contestants (known as housemates) live in a purpose-built house and are isolated from the rest of the world with cameras catching their every move.

Each week, housemates nominate two of their peers for eviction, and the housemate who receives the most nominations would face a public vote. Of these, one would eventually get evicted from the House.

The same way Hindi films are popular in Pakistan because of these very same reasons and I hope Hindi films do get a proper release in Pakistan.

Would you accept Hindi film offers?Yes .Why not? I would like to work with directors like Imtiaz Ali whom I absolutely adore and Vishal Bhardwaj whose films have such fantastic music and subjects and also many such directors with whom I am dying to work with.

What do you think of the Pakistani actors making it big in Hindi industry?It’s a great thing because it will ease the tensions between the two countries and art and culture can bring the two neighbours together. Pakistanis are just crazy about Hindi films and TV shows.

RINAGAR: With the threat of disease outbreak lurking in flood-ravaged Jammu & Kashmir, efforts have been initiated on a war-footing to provide medical staff and medicines even as rescue operations were slightly hampered on Sunday due to rains in the Valley.

Armed forces and National Disaster Relief Force have rescued over two lakh trapped people as the operations entered the 13th day yesterday. Over one lakh people are still marooned after the worst floods in the state in a century unleashed a trail of death and destruction, claiming at least 250 lives.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan took a detailed review of the health-related relief measures at a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here and senior officials and said all assistance will be provided to the state authorities to tackle any possible epidemic, reports PTI. Blackmoney: SIT empowers ED to check huge forex violations N

EW DELHI: To check largescale foreign exchange violations and generation of slush funds, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money has asked RBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to jointly take on cases of huge exports outstanding.

The SIT, for the first time, has authorised the ED to obtain regular information on export outstanding amount of more than Rs.100 crore, a data till now shared only by the banking regulator with investigative and enforcement agencies like DRI and Customs.

Under the current protocols, every exporter, be it an individual or business firm, has to file an ex-

port outstanding (XOS) statement to RBI within nine months after it ships goods or products to a foreign destination which is extendable by another six months.

If a person or business house does not file the XOS it means either that entity has been duped of its income or the case qualifies to be one of forex violations or hawala dealings as the money got has not been recorded for.

Sources said the SIT found that many instances are being reported and hence it has asked RBI to begin providing the ED dossiers on such defaults as it is the lead agency to check forex contraventions and the hawala route of illegal payments.

National badminton coach Pullela Gopichand says he has a lot of hope on Prannoy.

"I think it is really wonderful. He not only played well in Vietnam to reach the finals but winning in Indonesian Masters is really incredible.

He was the only foreigner playing on the final day among the Indonesians," said Gopichand.

"He is somebody on whom we have a lot of hope. He has been a little inconsistent like a lot of our shuttlers. But it is really good to see consistency in last two weeks. It will be a big boost for him to do well in future," he added.

The coach said it was heartening to see different players winning medals and tournaments. "It is very good for Indian badminton with different players winning medals and tournaments.

We had Kashyap and Guru (Gurusaidutt) winning medal at Commonwealth Games and then we had Srikanth winning in Thailand, we had Kashyap and Sourabh winning. Yes, we don't have Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long here but then we hope we will reach the next level in future," he said.

However, Lajovic was not ready to cave in and reeled off four games on the trot, breaking Somdev in the seventh and ninth games and stunned the Indian camp and the home fans by serving out the set in the next game.

Gopichand’s badminton academy to open in Gujarat in Oct

NEW DELHI: National badminton coach Pullela Gopichand is all set to launch an academy in Gujarat next month and he is in talks with authories to open similar centers in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as well in the coming days. "We are planning to open few centers across the country. We are taking to Gujarat, we will be definetely starting there next month. Bododra will be one of the first centers," Gopichand said.

"There were many proposals from other state associations for opening academy. There was a request from the Rajasthan association. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore came in touch and a proposal was sent and it augured well for us. We will finalise the nitty-gritties after Asian Games.

Indian cadet boys finish fifth and girls end sixth M

UMBAI: India finished inside top-10 in all four categories of the 20th Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships' team events that concluded at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium here.

Indian boys and girls finished 9th and 7th respectively in the juniors section to lose out on a qualification for the World Championships in Shanghai, China, from November 30.

The host nation's boys and girls performed better and ended up 5th and 6th respectively in the cadets section late last night.

Meanwhile, table tennis powerhouse China's hegemony came to be questioned in the cadets section when they lost both the titles and had to fight tooth and nail to retain the junior boys' title at the expense of South Korea.

The gainers were South Korea and Japan who took the cadet boys' and girls' team trophies.

China just about managed to retain the junior boys' title defeating South Korea 3-2, to who they had lost in the semi finals of the younger age group, and the junior girls' crown, beating Japan 3-1.

South Korea, who were on course to annex the junior boys title, were 2-0 up but the Chinese fought their way back into the final winning the next three rubbers, thanks to Zhou Qihao, Liang Jingkun and Yu Ziyan who put up a brave front to thwart the ram-

UMBAI: Former champions Air India dished out a good attacking display during their fluent 5-1 win against a determined Indian Navy in a well-contested Super Division match of the PMC Bank-MHAL (Mumbai Hockey Association Limited) League – 2014, played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, here, on Sunday evening.

The airmen had a smooth takeoff, scoring the opening goal through Lalit Upadhyay in the very fourth minute, but four minutes later Navy restored parity when Ved Prakash found the net with a neat deflection off Ambika Singh’s long hit from the left. It did not take Air India too, long to regain the lead as Olympian Arjun Halappa with a simple tap in from close scored the first of his two goals in the 11th minute before drag flicker Gaganpreet Singh with powerful flick converted a penalty corner six minutes later to make it 3-1 in favour of the airmen.

In the other two matches, Indian Oil outplayed Maharashtra State Police 4-1 after leading 3-0 at the break and Punjab National Bank (PNB), twice in arrears came back strongly to pull off a 3-2 win against Rhema Sports earlier in the afternoon.

In the second match of the day, Indian Oil combined well and got down to business almost immediately when Inder Singh Chadha from a field effort drew first blood in the very second minute and 10 minutes later Roshan Minz doubled the lead with another field goal. Skipper Deepak Thakur consolidated the lead (3-0) by firing home in the 21st minute and later Gurjinder converted a penalty stroke in the 59th minute. ADRID: Atletico Madrid gained some measure of revenge for their heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid by beating the European champions 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

NCHEON: The Indian women's football team shrugged off some unsavoury incidents in the run-up to the Asian Games as they mauled Maldives 15-0 to open their campaign in style here today.

INDIA FACE UAE CHALLENGE IN ASIAN GAMES FOOTBALL Hassled by delayed clearance by the government, Indian men's football team will open their campaign in the Asian Games with a potentially tough match against United Arab Emirates here today.

The Under-23 team faced enormous problems due to the delayed clearance for the Games and were left stranded for a few days in Shanghai where they had gone for an exposure tour.

They were to take a flight to Incheon from Shanghai much before the football competition begins but after cancellation of their tickets thrice, they reached only two days prior to today's opening game at the Hwaseong Sports Complex Main Stadium.

Having weathered all these problems, they will be now up against the UAE, who had finished runners-up in the 2010 Asian Games in China.

31 New owners take over HIL's Mumbai franchise

NEW DELHI: In a boost to the troubled Hockey India League, their Mumbai franchise, which was abandoned by the Dabur group recently, has now been taken up by DoIT Sports Management, making it the sixth team in the event to be held in January–February.

"Hockey India League today announced that the New Mumbai franchise would be taken up by DoIT Sports Management (India) Pvt. Ltd., making it the sixth franchise that will compete in the prestigious international event to be held every year in January– February," HIL said in a statement.

The development comes amid reports that Ranchi Rhinos will be pulling out of the event, owing to financial reasons.

"We welcome DoIT Sports Management on board the Hockey India League. As they already have immense knowledge in the sports arena, we are confident that will have a positive impact on this season’s Hockey India League. They are a new company with exciting new ideas for the region and are looking at contributing towards the development and growth of Hockey in the country," said Hockey India Secretary-General and HIL Chairman Dr Narinder Batra.

MSSA ties up with Smaaash for simulator cricket tourney
