AGROTA (J&K): Pakistan-based militants will try to sneak into India and attack 'soft targets' in Jammu & Kashmir like schools, religious places and civilian areas ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to the country later this month, a top Army officer warned on Thursday. The warning by General Officer Commanding (GOC), 16 Corps, Lt Gen K.H. Singh on the basis of "general inputs" came on a day when security forces gunned down five hardcore militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in a fierce gunbattle in Shopian district of south Kashmir. Gen Singh said that 200 heavily-armed militants were waiting in 36 launching pads

MAKAR SANKRANTI, PONGAL CELEBRATED

For our feathered friends

A
midst the enthusiastic celebrations of Makar Sankranti every year, the plight of the birds is often forgotten. Every year many birds get tangled in the manja of kites and are left unattended to die. But all is not lost yet for the feathered ones as the city's secret helpers are at work 24x7 to rescue the birds. Today, we pay tribute to these unsung heroes by highlighting their ceaseless efforts and the perils that they face daily. Four years ago, Shailesh Chowatia and some of his family members started a novel initiative of rescuing birds. He started a bird helpline to seek out the injured and traumatised birds. This initiative on the lines of Jainism is now a full-fledged movement with people from all faiths responding and volunteering to save these helpless creatures. They have also opened their doors to accommodate these flailing ones. Talking to the ADC, Chowatia said, “We now have over four hundred volunteers who serve as the torch-bearers of our initiative and cover entire Mumbai from Virar to Churchgate. They all rescue the birds tangled or injured and tend to them with medical aid. After that they all are brought to my residence and accommodated till they are cured and then they are sent to the Gamdevi shelter in Grant Road.” When asked about the kind of medical aid given, Chowatia disclosed that they do not use any allopathy. He said, “When the bird is hurt or injured it faces a deep trauma and then if they are either stitched or given any drugs they die of shock. So we treat them with natural herbs like turmeric and tea powder. It really heals the wound faster than any drug or stitches.” He also added that once he brought a pigeon from the hospital who was stitched and then it died within two hours. Hence they have stopped accepting birds from the hospital.
Shailesh Chowathia’s healing touch is evident as he tends to a bird who has been hurt by ‘manjha’, (right) another badly injured bird. Further, he also shed light on how the rescue is a family affair too. He said, “My wife also works and tends to these birds and we all have come to love our profession.” For them it is a rigorous day and night affair as they go about their job saving one bird at a time.
When asked whether there was any State-funding to the humanitarian initiative, Chowatia said, “No. We have never tried as of yet but in the near future we will apply for it. Till then we will run our initiative on the kindness of others.” So here is what one should do if they want to
support the aforesaid initiative, call 8655370005 or 8655370006. Meanwhile, at The Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), Lt Col (Dr) J C Khanna informed us about the bird casualties. He said, “We have rescued 25 pigeons, two owls, six kites, one
cuckoo, and three crows this year.” People willing to support this initiative can call: 8655370005 or 8655370006

Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao takes a look at the noodles cooked by school children using the solar cooking system at Maha Surya Kumbh, an event organised by Bandra MLA Ashish Shelar at Bandra in Patwardan Garden on Thursday. The event was organised to promote the use of solar power among children.
Say it with brooms During the last Delhi polls, the Aam Aadmi Party swept Delhi with long brooms. Chief Arvind Kejriwal
evidently wanted to create an impression that his was a party for the poor. He used the broom as a symbol. He faces keen competition now. The BJP is also carrying brooms. The party's intention of course is different. It is not using the broom as any kind of symbol. It is sweeping Delhi. On Mahatma Gandhi's birthday in October, Prime Minister Modi asked the people to sweep so the nation can become swachh. He himself took a long broom and was seen on camera by millions sweeping away some 'kachra'. His campaign was not only to clean the nation but also to snatch away Mahatma Gandhi from the Congress. All these years the Congress has been getting reflected glory by its close association, right since the freedom struggle, with Gandhi. Gandhi was very keen about cleanliness. He was against manual cleaning of shit by socalled low caste persons. He used to remove his shit himself. Now in Delhi, the BJP workers are also carrying brooms for clean-ups. This being the case, the voters will find it difficult to know who is who. Maybe the BJP thought up this exercise to confuse the people.
And the best moustache award goes to...
Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao
Former Chief Fire Officer of Mumbai seems very upset with his successors as the new breed of firemen he thinks are unnecessarily fashionable and over-dependent on technology. His problem is that they are donning a no-moustache look while moustaches were compulsory for firemen and officers during his times. In case of large-scale fires, he says, like the Mantralaya one, it is
very difficult for firemen who go inside buildings to calculate the extent of fire and its temperature at the spot as their entire body is covered with heavy-weight fireproof dress. Besides, in some mysterious fires, one cannot see the flames and the temperature is so high that the rods in the building start melting and the structure poses a risk. In such situations, the moustache which is a part of the
only exposed part (the face) of a fireman’s body, helps him calculate the temperature of the fire. As temperature rises above 500 C, from a few feet away itself, the fireman’s moustache hair start burning emitting a foul odour. This according to our officer, is the simplest and most accurate signal indicating that the fire situation has turned worse. Then the firemen used to stop there and inform seniors, ask for extra help from headquarters. In the 18th century British Army too, officers used to don thick and big mostaches. Their reason was different. At a tender age, when clean-shaven British officers stood with the Indian soldiers, they looked like highschool boys as the Indians had a sturdy physique. To look older, they were instructed to maintain moustaches. During gatherings and get-togethers, they also held competitions for the best moustache. Meanwhile, if we ever have such a competition in the city, Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao will undoubtedly be the winner for his beautiful moustache!

Power minister hints at Pawar slams Centre, privatisation of RGPPL state for sugar crisis Dabhol power plant N CITY

nion Minister for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal yesterday stated that the Centre is not averse to the idea of exploring the possible privatisation of the crisis-ridden gas based Dabhol power plant of Ratnagiri Gas and Power Private Limited (RGPPL). Speaking to newspersons at the Sahyadri state guest house he said that if privatisation helps in giving cheaper power to the people, then the Centre was not averse to such an idea. He disclosed that the gas supply in the country was down and the plant was facing losses and that the government within the next fortnight would hold discussions with the banks and state government officials to sort out the issues. Giving details of the several initiatives taken by his ministry in the last seven months, he said that the government is keen to see through the amendment to the Electricity Act in the budget session of the Parliament that will en-
Man with gold worth `2.32cr held at airport one of the biggest Iinnhauls of smuggled gold recent months, the Customs Department seized 9.31 kg of the precious metal valued at Rs 2.32 crore from an Indian passenger who landed at the airport from Thailand. The traveller, Bhupathi Kannan, has been arrested, an official told PTI on Thursday. "We have recovered gold chains collectively weighing 9.31 kg from a passenger, Bhupathi Kannan, who landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport last night," the official attached to Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Dept said. Kannan, a frequent visitor to Thailand, had meticulously concealed the chains in his cargo pant. He was intercepted and upon checking, the gold chains were found in his possession. He was subsequently arrested. Kannan, who was acting as a "carrier" of the consignment, confessed to have smuggled gold once in the past, the AIU officer said.
able people to opt for an electricity supplying distribution company that sells cheaper power to consumers. He said that like the concept of number portability in mobile telephony, the amendment seeks separation of carriage and content which will end the monopoly of distribution companies. Replying to queries on disinvestment in Coal India Limited (CIL) he said that the proposal has been approved and the Finance ministry is expected to take a final decision on it soon. Goyal further disclosed that CIL is to further invest Rs 5,000 crore in procurement of 250 additional railway rakes for
speedier transportation of coal to thermal power plants. He said that the rationalisation of coal mine linkages will ensure supply of coal from nearest mines and will reduce transportation costs by Rs 6,000 crore along with reducing tariffs. Commenting on the launch of the programme to install one crore Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) bulbs in street lighting in Delhi, Goyal said that in Mumbai the scheme will be implemented from Dushera in October. He added that the programme will not put a single penny's burden on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and will help cost saving by 60 to 65 per cent. However, the Shiv Sena which is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has opposed the plan for direct purchase of the LED bulbs without tendering. The Sena feels that in the future, the government might well force through similar programmes bypassing the civic body. However, Goyal contended that the move will save 10,000 MWs of peak-hour power.
New Additional Civic Chief appointed after two weeks
Dr Pallavi Darade, newly appointed Addl civic chief, nearly two weeks after the transfer of former Addl civic chief Vikas Kharage.
By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he appointment of Dr Pallavi Darade as the new Additional Municipal Commissioner (AMC) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) yesterday, came after a delay of two weeks following the sudden transfer on December 31, 2014 of Vikas Kharage, who held the position of additional municipal commissioner (city). Dr Pallavi Darade (IRS officer) was serving as an additional municipal
commissioner of Tribal Development (Nagpur) from April 12, 2012, and has also worked in many administrative capacities at Nagpur, Pune and Kolhapur. The state government last year transferred Kharage, who had spent only three months in the cash-rich corporation as secretary of forest department. The decision had surprised many given that the transfer was followed by another additional municipal commissioner (projects) Rajiv Jalota's transfer. Jalota's place was taken by Sanjay Mukherjee, who was the commissioner (state excise). Kharage had taken charge on October 1, 2014, after then additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani retired. Sources claimed that Kharage's transfer is not of a punitive nature and that he was “wanted” in the secretariat. “Kharage is media-shy, but he did a good job during his three months in the BMC, especially while executing the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He has been a performer and, hence, his name was recommended for the secretariat post," the source added.
ationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar yesterday slammed the Centre and state governments for their policies in tackling the slump in sugar prices, rise in production and their lopsided policies in tackling the crisis facing the sugarcane industry. Speaking to newspersons at Rashtravadi Bhavan here, he also slammed Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty and his party cadres for vandalising the Sugar Commissioner's office in Pune to press for enhanced remunerative prices for sugarcane. The former Union Agriculture minister stated that the gripping cold wave conditions in the country overall is favorable for sugarcane and wheat production leading to bumper harvest. Pawar slammed the government order to sell sugar by e-tender arguing that the slump in prices will mean that there will be more sugar bags lying unsold due to lack of demand. Commenting upon cooperative sugar mills like Malegaon mill in Pune district giving over and above
NCP chief Sharad Pawar at the party's office in Nariman Point, yesterday. remunerative procurement price for sugar, Pawar said that the Centre had slapped Income Tax notices on such mills giving excess of money to farmers. Taking a sarcastic dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Union minister of state for Consumer Affairs Raosaheb Danve, he remarked that he felt elated as the Union minister announced that the government will grant Rs 4,000 crore export subsidy for sugar. But when he inquired he found out that no such decision has been taken as yet. He added that since September the Centre

has stopped export of sugar. He added that the grim scenario is not just limited to the sugar industry alone as inclement weather conditions have affected the production of cotton and horticulture crops like grapes. In another sarcastic dig at the BJP's Minister for Cooperation Chandrakant Patil, Pawar remarked that the minister hails from the sugarcane belt of Kolhapur and hence is well aware of the crisis facing the sugar industry. In a sarcastic tone he welcomed Patil's warning to cooperative mills to pay fair remunerative prices or else the government will seize their sugar stocks and sell it to pay off the farmers.

CBI arrests 3 TCs for extortion By A Staff Reporter
ticket checkers' behaviour while on duty. During investigation, it was found out that these ticket checkers were grossly violating law. At times, they would give the travellers receipts and at most other times, they would simply extort the money without giving any receipts. After a thorough observation, the CBI nabbed the three. However, nabbing them was a task of its own. The three TCs fought and assaulted the CBI officers and Western Railway Vigilance officer. They threw their books and the money and tried to run away before they were grabbed by the authorities.

women's court on Thursday. Opposing Singh's bail application, the victim's lawyer told the court that the accused is an influential man. She drew the attention of the court towards the fact that lawyers are not protected. Unlike other professions, people practising law are less protected. She said, “The accused lawyer, under the guise of work, asked the victim to accompany him on outstation tours. For the first tour, By Santia Dudi he told the victim that she will be provided with a sepahe hearing of the bail ap- rate room, but once they plication of advocate Di- reached the place, she was wakar Singh, who is accused told that she had to share the of raping one of his juniors, room with the accused was held in the special lawyer Diwakar Singh. Singh being her employer not only emotionally blackmailed her but also threatened her of dire consequences. When he realised that the victim would not fulfill his demands further, he sacked her. His office is in the jurisdiction of the MIDC police station. If he is granted bail, he may hamper investigation using his influence. The case should be transferred to some other police station. A detailed investigation without any influence in
the case is required. And it's not possible if the accused is granted bail.” Defence counsel Ashok Sarogi told the court, “I agree that a detailed investigation is required in the case so the truth can come out, but it has nothing to do with the bail. The accused is not required to be kept in jail for it.” “The complainant is a lawyer by profession who is fully aware about her rights. If she was raped on the first tour why did she accompany the accused on other trips? Why didn't she complain about it earlier?” Sarogi added. The order on the bail is likely to be passed on January 21.

Gen Singh said the army was fully prepared to foil any such nefarious designs of the terrorist organisations. "There are 200 terrorists waiting in 36 launching pads across the border on the other side of the Pir Panjal range to sneak into Indian side, we have so far been able to foil their attempts," he said. Obama is arriving in New Delhi on January 25 on a three-day visit to the country. Gen Singh said the terror infrastructure across the border is active and terrorist organisations were receiving the support of Pakistani establishment including the army and ISI. "There are 14 to 15 terrorists training camp active on the other side of the line of control within our area of responsibility. "The terrorist infrastructure across the border is intact and there is every possibility that Pakistan might try to divert some of its home grown terrorists towards this side of the border," he said. The General said there could be a possibility that some disgruntled elements of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan might surrender to the Pakistani Army, which can be used to launch attacks against India. He said that there were 37 active militants in Jammu region, but their movements are under check by the security agencies. "There are 80 to 90 people involved in militancy in Jammu region including 37 active militants, the rest are sleeper cells, but we make sure that we continue to dominate them so they cannot launch any operation," Gen Singh said. He said that less than two months ago the chief of banned terror group Lashkar-
e-Taiba, Hafiz Sayeed, was reported to have visited the areas along the border in Pakistan to motivate his cadre to launch anti-India attacks. On a question whether India was ready to launch a counter attack on the terror infrastructure across the border, Singh said the army is always prepared to face any eventuality. He said that there were 37 active militants in Jammu region, but their movements are under check by the security agencies. "There are 80 to 90 people involved in militancy in Jammu region including 37 active militants, the rest are sleeper cells, but we make sure that we continue to dominate them so they cannot launch any operation," Singh said. While Pakistanbased terror outfits were trying to infiltrate militants in to the Indian side, Singh said the army has been foiling their attempts.
India well prepared: Parrikar Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday said India is "well prepared" to thwart any possible terror attack in the backdrop of intelligence inputs that strikes could be carried out on "soft targets" in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit here this month. "They (terrorists) may try to do something to cre-
ate news. But we are well prepared," Parrikar said. He was replying to a question about the statement by a top army officer that there were inputs about possibility of attacks on "soft targets" by Pakistan-based terror groups such as schools, religious places, military convoys and civilian areas in the militancy-hit state ahead of Obama's visit.

"She has experience in governance and enjoys a credible image. She is associated with certain values. She has been a crusader in government as well as outside it for a long time," he said welcoming her to BJP. Bedi, in her speech, pitched her leadership credentials and said she knows "how to work and how to make others work". "I joined BJP due to the inspirational leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Delhi needs a strong, clear headed and stable government. I will dedicate everything I have to Delhi, to country. I am very happy that BJP has given me this opportunity," she said. She recalled that she had taken voluntary retirement after being "overlooked" for Delhi Police Commissioner's post as she did not find her then assignment "challenging" enough. Praising Modi, she said the nation had seen "revival of hope" under him and it
changed her as well. She had earlier decided to be fully dedicated to her social work but was not taking the plunge into politics. She, however, made no mention of Aam Aadmi Party and its leader Kejriwal with whom she had a fallout after he decided to float a political party. She had been sympathetic to BJP for a long time and praising Modi's governance in her tweets. Dehli BJP President Satish Upadhyay, MP Vijay Goel and its in-charge of Delhi affairs Prabhat Jha were also present. Jha described Bedi's statement "inspirational".

he much-hyped ecofriendly plan envisaged by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) to phase out the use of paper in day-to-day
affairs of the civic body has remained only on paper for the past more than 18 months. As part of their ec0friendly plans, the civic body had spent more than Rs 25 lakh to distribute high-end Samsung-Galaxy tabs to all elected representatives so as to ensure paperless governance. The idea was that they would receive various official notices, invitations
and meeting agendas on their electronic gadget via the internet. However, over the past more than 18 months, the civic administration has not uploaded or emailed a single circular to the corporators, some of them who use the tab phones more for personal use than for official purposes. The then civic chief had also unveiled his plans for the transformation of all old hard-copy records into digitalised versions, to moot e-correspondence facilities to interact with corporators and head of departments. When contacted, municipal commissioner Subhash Laakhe said, “Needed action will be taken to initiate steps towards paperless governance.” Thanks to the casual approach by the higher-ups in the MBMC, the administrative wing is still waisting its precious time and money in churning out thousands of photocopies each month.

N the aftermath of its Independence in December, 1971, from the successively oppressive reigns of Pakistan’s civilian and then military dispensations, Bangladesh’s society set about on its goals of nationbuilding and constructing a stable and progressive democratic society, where religious bigotry and extremism would be given a wide berth and quelled. The tremendous popularity and credibility of the towering leader of the country’s liberation movement, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, gave no reason for bona fide well-wishers and objective observers of N the occasion of Army Day, the the country’s socio-political scene, both chief has issued a disturbing warn- within and outside Bangladesh, to conteming: It should be taken seriously by the plate otherwise.

people of this country. He spoke of a threat from Pakistan. It has been there for a long time. Pakistan will not give hopes of grabbing Kashmir. There seems to be now a spurt in the violence unleashed by Pakistan terrorists. The proxy war has been intensified. The army chief has warned the country to be prepared for any eventuality. He has stated that as part of its proxy war Pakistan is pushing some 200 terrorists into India to carry out violent operations. There is every possibility, he has said, that apart from civilian establishments, it may target schools. There appears to be another reason for Pakistan’s plans a few days before the Republic Day. That country’s establishment must have been totally frustrated when US President Barack Obama accepted an invitation from the Modi government to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade in Delhi. Pakistan can be expected to do everything possible to scuttle the programme of the President. A violent incident near Delhi could stop the President from coming to India. Pakistan has enough number of Indian agents to carry out its violent programmes in India. The army chief has warned about the infiltration of 200 terrorists into India. Where will they be headed? Will they go to Kashmir or to some other part of Pakistan’s plans and it can be expected that India will make all the necessary bandobast throughout the month.

aggrieved, ended in December 1971, when amid rising Indo-Pakistani hostilities surrounding the events in erstwhile East-Pakistan, Pakistan declared war on India and the Indian retaliation was massive; it concluded with the establishment of the newly independent country of Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujib was released from his prison in Rawalpindi and returned to Dhaka to receive a welcome, the scale and intensity of which has few parallels. Nevertheless, the euphoria which marked the beginning of Mujib’s rule, was sooner than later replaced with gradual dissatisfaction of the people against their leader’s peremptory methods of governance, increasing nepotism, corruption, maladministration, crushing economic backwardness of most people, and a near famine like condition in 1974, which the govBut, somewhere in between, the country be- ernment apparently did little to prevent. came deeply polarised, the gradual yet steady nurturing of civil institutions to ensure internal stability of the country got thwarted with unfavourable consequences for the country, religious extremism raised its ugly head breathing fire and brimstone, and instability became a perennial byword for Bangladesh. HE Rishis said “God” instead of “Life”. They say: By “His” Grace. It is only a question of language. This Life is my true nature. I play the part of the physical me, the psychological me, the intellectual me. They constitute the little ego, little self. We must realise our own higher nature. When you have lost your car key and keep searching it all the place and finally your finger touches the key in your own pocket, you cry: “Hurray, I have got it”. You have not ‘got’ it; it was already there. So also you realise your own Self by a spark of illumination. In your own non-apprehension of Reality, you misunderstand everything. You are not ‘this’ which you think you are. You are ‘That’. Rishis awaken you to that state of Consciousness.
Just as the entire world of dream experience merges in the Seer, so also the different planes of Consciousness merge in that one Consciousness. Only a still quietened mind can turn the instrument of Consciousness
MATTER & SPIRIT higher. To strive for that or not is your choice. Whoever forgets his own nature we call him mad, cranky, crazy. We have forgotten that our true nature is divine nature. Darwin could not know it. He said the higher species is ‘Super Man’. Not Super Man, but Man in perfection is God. It is the highest goal. What will happen to the world if every one reaches this goal? The question is like asking:
surely gave the country a more Islamist orientation. An outcome of general Zia’s policy was the gradual re-recognition of Bangladesh's Jamaat–e –Islami: a politico-religious organization which is identified with increasingly credible allegations, that it had played a crucial, if not an unpardonable role, in assisting the Pakistani army of occupation to commit heinous crimes against the country’s people, when the rest of the country was determinedly and desperately fighting against the Pakistani army in whatever way it could.
Political rivalry General Zia gave Bangladesh the nomenclature of an Islamic State. The minorities started feeling the repercussions of it by way of being reminded repeatedly that they were supposedly not a part of the country’s majority and slowly began to feel semblances of repression against them. An assassination claimed General Zia in 1981. His successor, General Ershad, staged a coup and declared Martial law in 1982. He ruled for about eight years; through a movement for the restoration of democracy, led by Sheikh Hasina, Mujib’s elder daughter, who was the leader of the Awami League (AL), and Begum Khaleda Zia, the widow of General Zia, navigating the BNP, democracy returned in circa 1991. Since then the country has been ruled by two bitter rival leaders, respectively of the AL and the BNP. The former is attributed by a more secular predisposition, while the latter is allegedly more receptive to conservative Islamic ideas, despite its declarations to the contrary. Today, the country is ruled by the AL with its Prime Minister in the person of Sheikh Hasina. It is passing through a crucial period in its evolution of statehood, where it is grappling with the disparate pulls of religious fundamentalism, political rivalry, bringing to account the perpetrators of 1971 war crimes, and the imperative of good governance and emphasis on meritocracy leading to stability, security, and prosperity. Both the AL and BNP seem to realize the necessity to respect democratic norms; the BNP is further comprehending that alienating minorities would only narrow its own outlook along with fundamentalism affecting its own members. Hopefully, from this ongoing social churn, the country will emerge with attributes of social cohesion, religious tolerance, and a strong democratic culture, with favourable outcomes for itself and the region. The appointment of Justice S. K. Sinha as the nation’s Chief Justice is a laudable step in that direction. If everybody becomes healthy what would happen to the hospitals and doctors? Then why am I telling you all? To strive is itself the goal. Striving to reach the highest, you reach a higher peak of existence. Then your reaction, your response, your relations with others will radically change. You are potentially capable of higher things. You don’t have to go to the Himalayas to do it. Stay where you are. Nature has kept you in the right place. Strive. Learn to stand erect. Keep the integrity. Judge for yourself. Make the mistakes yourself. Don’t allow others to make them for you. How many times have you fallen before you learnt cycling? How many times have you drank water before you learnt swimming? How many times have you tumbled before you learnt to walk? Matter for worry THE recent test series against the Aussies has once again revealed the dark side of the Indian bowling. India, once known to be a land of spinners, are now struggling to find a genuine spinner of the cricket ball who can be a good wicket taker. Inspite of having many national tournaments there is a dearth of quality spinners. Though a lot of fast bowlers and medium pacers are available, they are not properly guided, nor trained to bowl according to the field as was seen in the test series against the Aussies. Even stints at the MRF and the NCA have not proved beneficial. In such a situation, why can't

MNS chief Raj Thackeray
Don’t feel relegated THE Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) was a new party born in Mumbai on March 9, 2006. MNS is the brainchild of Raj Thackeray. Original inhabitants of Mumbai started joining and supporting the party with gusto. In the 2009 Assembly elections Raj toiled hard and his strenuous incumbent work gave a room for 13 MLAs to be elected to the Assembly seats. In 2014 Assembly elections in our state, many noted parties had a downfall and Raj could procure only one seat across the state. This does not give room to pessimistic thinkers that the MNS is decimated and the party’s future is in doldrums. At a time and juncture when the party is going through a turbulent phase, it wasn’t apt on the part of some ExMLAs to join other parties. Raj is a one man with courage who formed a majority. The only mistake where the MNS Chief Raj Thackeray has erred was trusting his MLAs blindfolded. Raj shouldn’t feel relegated, as he is an orator par excellence and a one man show to uplift the MNS party. As all are discerning that all political parties see detractors, but after a span of a year or two or say when elections come and they are denied a ticket to contest, they do ghar-wapasi back to their original party. — Fayyaz S Pathan, Dahisar

Pak’s thoughtless priority AFTER the US secretary of state John Kerry’s absolutely open warning to Pakistan during his address to the media in Islamabad to uproot the Pakistan-backed terror groups including the anti-India group LeT, it will be better and safer mainly for the common people of Pakistan to forget Kashmir and remember that the friendly relations and the crossborder trade with India will be highly beneficial forever. Not Kashmir, but only trade with India is much more useful and beneficial to entire Pakistan in all respects. Kashmir will not feed all the Pakistani people forever. Nor will it result into the financial progress and growth of the latter. Pakistan should not be thoughtless in deciding its priorities. It should develop its foresight BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj at once. Regulate air fares SOMETIME domestic airlines offer up to 30 per cent discounts. With already high fares does it make an attractive offer? The condition at airports has changed with increase in number of passengers. The rush looks similar to the ones at railway stations. It’s a different thing that it’s a luxury which many could not afford or think of before this. With so much rush-supply, why are airlines suffering losses? A scrutiny by financial experts will reveal the real reason for losses. The policy of almost all airlines not to charge fixed fares is against
who have held the same views for decades – are feeling emboldened to come out in the open and spout their venom only after the BJP came to power. Let's face it, a strongman like Modi can permanently silence these lunatics without much effort. If he chooses not to do so, the reason could be that these individuals operate under the RSS umbrella. Since many senior ministers in the BJP, including the PM himself, are loyal and long time RSS pracharaks, they may be reluctant to openly condemn them and thereby undermine the authority of the parent body. As for the general public, they will just have to grin and bear it. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

Swamy wants varsity named after Sree Narayana Guru
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged HRD Minister Smriti Irani to establish a central university in Thiruvananthapuram after Dalit icon Sree Narayana Guru. Sree Narayana Guru is widely revered for his contribution to uplifting the members of Kerala's backward Ezhava caste. "...A Central University in Trivandrum should be established in his name because he uplifted a most backward community called Ezhava to such heights that today this community has become the most educated community of Kerala," Swami said in a letter to Irani.
Disqualify candidates with criminal cases: CEC Candidates facing grave charges of murder and other crimes should be disqualified from contesting elections in a bid to decriminalise politics, says the Election Commission. It also wants the growing menace of paid news to be made an electoral offence to provide a level-playing field in elections. The EC has made recommendations against candidates facing cases in which charges are framed by courts which could attract a sentence of five years.

OLKATA: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his gesture of congratulating him after winning the Lok Sabha elections, saying he did not expect him to reach out after their 'nasty' spat. At the same time, Tharoor was critical of the Modi government, saying there is a huge gap between rhetoric and reality, reports PTI. Tharoor, whose wife Sunanda Pushkar's mysterious death has led police to register a murder case and triggered a controversy, also lashed out at the media, alleging it is "irresponsible". "I didn't expect him(Modi) to reach out and that's why I was very impressed," the Congress MP said during a media interaction at the launch of his book "India Shashtra" in the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival. "I was surprised because Modi had not shown signs of reconciliation with an opponent before that. He and I had also clashed quite clearly and explicitly 3 to 8 months previously when he had said something about my wife," he said, recalling Modi's "nasty" tweet about Sunanda.

Tharoor did not take any questions from the media when asked about the Sunanda murder case. He also praised BJP for including more women in the party, terming it as a "healthy sign". "I am pleased that the BJP is finally making room for the right gender because that was a very very male dominant government and a male dominant party. So that's a healthy sign." In a no-holds-barred attack on the media, Tharoor said that the advent of 24/7 TV channels and the pressure of breaking news and TRPs have led to a race to the bottom in terms of sensation, voyeurism and headline grabbing. Controversial Sonia book now out in India EW DELHI: A fictionalised acN count of Sonia Gandhi's life by Spanish author Javier Moro which

hruv Sachdeva and Clifford Alfonso, winners of Thespo 2010 are calling it as they see it with their new comic show, We Call Your Bullshit. In this show, they will take on issues such as Bollywood gossip, absurd news, ecological news, business trends, environmental issues and, in their own words, anything else that is masquerading as more than it’s worth. We’re sure that you’ll roar with laughter as the duo launche into improvised acts, theatrical games and involve the audience in their acts. However, be warned as your participation might require you to indulge in some rather risque activities — think chugging games on stage and engaging in a dance-off. The duo are the brains behind Humour Me, a company that has been working in the field of entertainment for the past 10 years. With GQ calling Dhruv Sachdeva their top improv performer of 2014, this show is definitely a must-watch. >> Ark has a dark, relaxing ambience
Molecular Magic ark is a newly opened bar at courtyard by Marriott that promises an excellent range of cocktails. an excited Dev goswami paid them a visit and tells you why it’s worth heading over to
M
olecular gastronomy was a big flop in Mumbai. It was a trend that many of us were excited about at the start of 2014, but it made a swift exit from restaurant menus. Molecular mixology, on the other hand, has been a steady fixture at several bars across the city. With great entertainment value (it might sound clichéd, but sipping on a drink that has smoke wafting out of the glass is an experience that never gets old), mind-blowing infusions (especially those that use cigar or apple wood) and unique concoctions, this seems like a trend that is here to stay. And Ark, at Courtyard by Marriott, is counting on that. Their current menu has just four, tried and tested molecular cocktails. But, the bartending staff promised to introduce several more options in the near future. One of my favourites (off-menu) was a Vodka Watermelon Jelly. Yes, jelly — sort of like a grown up version of a Jell-O shot. It is a moist piece of jelly that has been infused with vodka and is served on a watermelon peel. I missed the refreshing taste of watermelon, but apart from that, I was both pleased and intrigued by the dessertlike drink. From their menu, I tried the Smoke Desire and the Pearl Martini — both priced at `600. Smoke Desire is a cocktail that I imagine Don Corleone (from The Godfather) would drink in today’s day and age. A medley of scotch, apple and cinnamon, with the molecular process adding in a smoky touch of apple wood, this is an enjoyable, relaxing drink. The cocktail is wonderfully balanced, with the tartness of the apple and spicy-sweetness of the cinnamon complementing the scotch. It’s a drink that I have tried before, but this is definitely the best version of an apple wood smoked drink that I’ve come across. I was a big fan of the Pearl Martini; a

unique drink, where the freshness of the watermelon juice was quite discernible and the vodka hit was potent. However, what won me over were the delicious watermelon-infused balls at the bottom of my glass. Don’t make the mistake of sipping on this drink straight from the glass — you need a thick straw to get a good mix of vodka and watermelon, and then let the juicy pop of the watermelon balls take over your tastebuds. This drink is a must-have. I also tried the Blitz (`560), a drink from their signature cocktails section that perfectly showcases the talent of the men behind the bar. With vodka as its base and elderflower extract, sour mix and lemongrass acting as additional flavours, Blitz needed to be perfectly balanced — and it was. There wasn’t a single ingredient that was overpowering and if you’re a fan of lemongrass, this is a drink that you really should try. Along with my drinks, I also tried a few dishes from the limited bar menu — even though it is limited, they do give you the option of converting some of their gravy-
based Indian starters into a meal, complete with naan. The bruschetta (`425 onwards) had well-toasted bread and a fresh, well-seasoned selection of vegetables. The Beef Pepper Fry (`595) hit the right spot for me — the pepper was prominent and the beef was superbly cooked. I also tried the Boti Kebab, which was served in a cashew gravy and was prepared to ensure that the cashew didn’t overpower the dish. However, the kebab was a little over-salted and though it was alright, I wasn’t a fan. Although the food is good, it is overpriced. And at `560 for a signature cocktail (exclusive of taxes), the drinks are an expensive proposition as well. However, they do give you your money’s worth — the drinks are well-mixed, the staff’s talent is apparent, some of the drinks are truly unique and the experience on the whole is thoroughly enjoyable. Oh, and before I forget to mention, they have a special rack of collector’s edition wine. If you don’t mind spending several thousands on a few drinks, Ark is definitely worth-visiting.
andra houses some of the best restaurants in the city and so, when Sassy Spoon introduced an outlet in the suburb, we weren’t surprised. I have wanted to visit this restaurant for ages, so I was quite excited about reviewing it! The restaurant has transparent windows and allwhite décor, and my dining companion and I were impressed with the first look of this huge space. The restaurant was jam packed on a Tuesday evening, so we recommend that you reserve a table. We started our meal with their cocktails — Spiked Very Berry Khatta (`550), Fresh Berry Sangria (`550) and Tart (`550). The Very Berry Khatta is an interesting take on kala khatta and was absolutely delicious — my favourite of the night! Their potent sangria is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. If you’re looking for something unique, then the tamarindbased Tart, with its exceptional blend of tequila and tamarind, is a must-try. We then tried their Smoked Bacon and Sweet Corn Soup (`290), which tasted great, had the perfect consistency and fit right into my slot for comfort food. From their extensive list of starters, we chose the Crispy Chicken with Curry Leaf Tenders (`350), Cajun Spiced Prawns (`450) and Fried Calamari (`395). My dining companion couldn’t get enough of the crispy chicken, which I didn’t really enjoy because it was too spicy for my palette. However, I couldn’t keep my hands off the perfectly cooked prawns, which were mindnumbingly delicious. The fried calamari on the other hand, was average. The Flatbread with Creamed Spinach, Mushrooms and Arugula (`490), was soft and rich in flavour. Already stuffed with our starters, we only managed to try one main course dish — Teriyaki Steamed Rawas with Chive and Jasmine Rice (`630). The fish was scrumptious and melt-in-the-mouth and the rice was the perfect accompaniment. Their dessert, Dark Chocolate and Basil Fondant (`350), deserves a special mention. It’s an innovative dessert, and the basil centre oozing out of the dark chocolate fondant sealed the deal for us. Sassy Spoon lived up to my expectations and is worth a visit. However, it is highly priced and the slow service might test your patience. Hideaway in tHe
Lap of Luxury Nisha Javeri, a wellness and beauty expert, believes that vacations should be about relaxation and rejuvenation. She tells us why Schloss Elmau, located in the Bavarian Alps, is the perfect destination for when you need a little R&R
B
uilt in 1916, Schloss Elmau was built for the artistic community, where guests and artists were tended to by helpers. Its current owner, Dietmar Muller Elmau, was bestowed with Germany’s Hotelier of the year award in 2012, which is considered to be the Oscar of the hotel industry. During my stay at the resort, a meeting with Mr. Elmau revealed that he had lived in several parts of India, and in fact, his first child was born in India. The most intriguing part of Schloss Elmau’s history is that a number of people assumed that it would shut down after a fire ravaged it in 2005. But, after months of hardwork, it was finally rebuilt, going on to become one of the leading hotels of the world! I somehow cannot imagine it closing down. Located in the Bavarian Alps, 1000m above sea level and100km south of Munich, this luxurious haven has a lot to offer. I discovered that the bolstered incarnation of Schloss Elmau has a new-found sense of intimacy. Guests have their privacy and yet will never feel neglected no matter where they are on the property. I walked up the white gravel path leading up to the castle, through the village of Klais, amidst a fragrant pine forest. The bright, ebullient yellow castle appears to be guarded by the surrounding mountains, and their jagged shadows creates a theatrical setting, which is bound to leave you awestruck.
A sense Of TrAnquIl superfluITy My room, like all the others at Schloss Elmau, was luxurious and offered breathtaking views of the Wetterstein mountain range. The gigantic bathtub housed in the spacious bathroom was a sight to behold. It took me a while to soak in the environs as everything here wears a robe of opulence — the amenities seem endless,
royalty at their Michelin-star restaurant. Post the indulgence, I relaxed with a perky Espresso Martini, prepared by one of their bartenders — trust me, this drink is just what you need to get your spirits soaring. To satisfy my adventure bug, I went trout fishing and later spotted several rare species of the avian community. There was the option of tennis and golf too, but I gave in to my wild side and rented a Porsche to take a crazy spin around town. As a fitness freak, I could not give up on my fitness regime, so I also enrolled for a wellness and yoga class. This was just one of the numerous classes that are available at the facility — you can expect aquaerobics, a fitness studio, meditation, personal training, pilates, stretching and tai chi. My yoga session left me relaxed and I followed it up with a dip in the hot, adult-only, salt-water pool near the breakfast area. This hotel just did not stop surprising me. A food enthusiast’s delight, their breakfast buffet includes a fresh and invigorated salad bar, made-to-order pan-fried meat, fish or vegetables and lots of strawberries and star fruit. It boasts of over 10,000 bottles of wine from various countries as well as champagne, neatly stacked in the hotel’s cellar. The menu is massive and leatherbound — daunting yet enticing. Elmau definitely understands the Theologian Johannes Mueller was the importance of attention to detail. The effect founder of this luxurious sanctuary and of these multi-hued robes is joyful — I would be very proud of what Schloss Elmau walked around wearing mine on the is today. He was a firm believer in the premises, just like all the other guests, with principle of equality and respected everyone, no one batting an eyelid! irrespective of their status. Schloss Elmau continues to follow this principle and stands geT pAmpereD tall even today. I left the resort with a I couldn’t wait to say goodbye to my worries promise that I would return soon, because a at one of the many spas (see box for more single trip fails to do justice to this exotic and information). During my private picnics, I lavish property, which knows how to make was treated to some delectable food. At its guests feel special. See you soon, or, Bis lunch, I gorged on lip-smacking food from the buffet and later got to wine and dine with bald as the Germans would say! >> Schloss Elmau is located at an altitude of 1000m above the sea level
with a complete refrigerator full of complimentary soft drinks and snacks that are replenished daily. With childish delight I explored the lavish property that has countless lavender-draped terraces, clusters of private recliners and concealed, cosy picnic spots. The heavy, oak-board floors survived the fire and are sturdier than ever. Despite its lavishness, Schloss Elmau’s ingenious layout gives you the opportunity to enjoy solitude as well as have some lively fun. The simplest example of this is how each guest gets a different coloured bathrobe. Mine was a soft, rosy pink! Mr.

I think it is all about the power of leadership... I think the credit (for rate cut by the RBI) should go to the political leadership, to our honourable Prime Minister and Finance Minister...We are pursuing prudent fiscal policies saying that we are committed to sound economic management, fiscal roadmap of 4.1%, 3.6%, 3%. That is how we have led and when we lead then obviously all the other institutions follow. It is not just a rate cut. It is the turn of the cycle and that is what is important here. What we have demonstrated now is that the economic momentum is picking up, the investments that are coming in...

Bulls run amok on D-Street, lift Sensex by over 700 points By Deepak Sahijwala
T
he Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in a surprising and beyond-policy-meeting announcement, cut the repo rate by 25 basis points from 8% to 7.75%. Consequently, the reverse repo adjusted to 6.75% and the marginal standing facility to 8.75%. The cash reserve ratio (CRR) was kept unchanged at 4% of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL). The RBI indicated that disinflationary developments along with the government’s resolve to adhere to its fiscal deficit target provided headroom to cut rates. Going ahead, the RBI said “once the monetary policy stance shifts, subsequent policy actions will be consistent with that stance”. On D-street bulls went berserk and lifted the Sensex by over 728 points. The Sensex which witnessed all-round buying amongst panic covering of short positions by bears closed at 28,075. Similarly all-round buying boosted the CNX Nifty by over 216 points. It closed at 8494. As regards the rate cut both industry and analysts have welcomed
it. “We expect the central bank to cut rates by 50-75 basis points over the next fiscal. The speed of the cuts will hinge on continued fiscal consolidation, and measures to improve the potential of the economy so that higher GDP growth does not set off fresh price fires” says Crisil Research. Crisil expects inflation, which has fallen below the RBI’s expected trajectory in recent months, to average 5.8% in 2015-16. A sharper-thanexpected decline in the prices of fruits and vegetables, lower inflation in cereals, fall in commodity prices and weak demand conditions restraining core inflation have all navigated the headline indicators lower. The trend also offsets another negative impact, albeit a statistical one: the favourable baseeffect of the past few months ended in December, which saw CPI inflation at 5% and WPI inflation at 0.11%. Going ahead, it expects proactive measures by the government to control food inflation and improve monetary and fiscal coordination. The trajectory beyond 2015-16 will alter once the government adopts
inflation targeting as recommended by the Urjit Patel Committee, which is expected in January 2016. Incidentally, Crisil believes the transmission of Thursday’s rate cut beyond the near-term – after a proportionate reduction in lending rates by most banks -- would hinge upon the risk aversion among banks because liquidity is expected to remain comfortable. As to whether this will trigger credit growth immediately, the jury is out because interest rates in the money market are already 100-150 bps lower than bank lending rates. Says DBS Bank, India” Thursday’s move was unscheduled but not unexpected. December’s policy statement had flagged the possibility of a move in the first quarter and also that it might be inter-meeting. To that extent, the central bank’s communication and guidance has been consistent and credible. But what has changed since December’s review to justify this cut? The policy tone had shifted to a more dovish bias back in December, but there was an ele-ment of uncertainty over the movement in global commodity prices, impact on headline CPI
Developments have provided headroom for a shift in the monetary policy stance. It may be recalled that the fifth bi-monthly monetary policy statement of December had stated that “if the current inflation momentum and changes in inflation expectations continue, and fiscal developments are encouraging, a change in the monetary policy stance is likely early next year, including outside the policy review cycle”. In its public interactions, the RBI had committed to initiate the process of monetary easing as soon as data indicated that medium term inflationary targets would be met...
— RBI Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan
when base effects fade and fiscal consolidation efforts. To that extent, some of those concerns have eased. Thursday’s move demonstrated the RBI’s confidence on the evolving inflation outlook, much due to the way global commodity prices are shaping up. Food price inflation was also spared from the lagged impact from weak monsoon, while base effects faded. This led December CPI inflation to undershoot expectations at slow to 5.0% (YoY) despite base effects (vs Nov’s 4.4%) and well below RBI’s
Jan15 inflation target of 8.0%. The central bank also highlighted that households’ inflation expectations had adapted to slowing inflation and were down to single digits for the first time in five years (report still to be made public). This paves the way for inflation to stay below 6.0% by January 2016. This environment of weak commodity prices and resultant disinflationary impulses provided the central bank with a window to support recovery without flaring price expectations”.
Experts Welcome Both The Move And Its Timing The RBI surprised the market by cutting key policy rates sooner than expected and setting into motion a much awaited turn in the monetary policy cycle. The likely trigger for this decision would have been the shallower than anticipated upturn in the CPI inflation reading for December that the majority was expecting to print in at 5.2-5.4% and that actually came in at 5.0%. The continued weakness in pricing power, reflected by the December WPI inflation print that stood at 0.11% and was released yesterday would likely have added to the pressure on the RBI to act sooner rather than later. — Jyotinder Kaur, Principal Economist, HDFC Bank The timing of the RBI’s decision to lower rates comes as a surprise. They had flagged the possibility of an inter-meeting cut back in December, but have front-run market expectations. This demonstrates their confidence on the evolving inflation outlook, much due to the way global commodity prices are shaping up. — Radhika Rao, Economist, DBS Bank, India The cut comes when major economies are witnessing low inflation and deflation in some economies, along with this slowdown is also seen which translates to low inflation and low growth. Major companies that will benefit from this move are infra cos and automobile companies. Infrastructure is picking up and cost of funds are
likely to come down. Automobiles which recently saw pull back of excise duty cuts extension may see growth in demand and profitability is seen rising on back of lowered cost of funds. November IIP data showed growth in capital goods while consumer durables showed negative growth. Banks may lower lending rates in near term which will boost consumption and manufacturing is expected to pick up. This move is symbolic and post budget, given inflation trajectory is downward, RBI may go for further easing this year. — Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, Director & CEO,WealthRays Securities The reduction has come as a positive surprise in the new year and would be a huge mood lifter for investors who have been grappling with subdued demand conditions. Going forward, CII hopes that while maintaining a delicate balance between growth and inflation, the RBI would shift its stance in favour of growth, given that the trend in inflation is clearly subdued. CII would call for a further cut in policy rates by at least 25 basis points in the forthcoming monetary policy, — Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII The announcement to reduce repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points comes as a reprieve to the manufacturing, infrastructure and MSME sectors. The AIAI welcomes the much awaited initiative by the RBI
which will go a long way in reviving and setting the economy on a growth trajectory. Moreover the interest rate cut will be instrumental in easing supply logjams and will bring down the cost of consumer goods, petroleum products and raw materials, initiating the process towards deflation in addition to providing a boost to the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. Vijay Kalantri, President, AIAI
The move augurs well for economy and corporate, which will be able to reduce cost of borrowing, albeit marginally. More than anything else, it adds to the ‘confidence levels’ of corporate and industry and fuels the ‘feel good factor’ for a revival of the Indian economy. It marks an ‘inflection’ point after a long period and high rates of interest and will act as a fillip to the economy. It gives a hope of further
rate cuts, if other macro economy parameters continue favourablethe most important being inflation, which has been kept on a strong leash. We can expect cheaper loans, lower EMI’s, more disposable income for retail consumers. Share markets have already timed up as sign of positive developments in the interest rates. — Prabodh Thakker, President, IMC
‘Gangaajal 2’ about society-police relationship: Prakash Jha
24 D
irector Prakash Jha is revisiting 2003 hit 'Gangaajal' in an upcoming sequel, which he says, is a real-life inspired story and will explore the relationship between society and police. 'Gangaajal 2' is about a female cop, who takes on some powerful and influential men in her district. Jha has started working on the film and hopes to release it later in the year. 'Gangajal 2' is about today's dictum of society-police relationship. 'Gangaajal' was more from the heart. This one has all the bizarre things happening around us in reality. The film is not made on a big scale and also has very less characters. It is a concentrated story," Jha, 62, told PTI. When asked whether the film is inspired by the outcry surrounding the suspension of UP civil servant Durga Shakti Nagpal, Jha replied in negative but added that there is one such scene that he has

The director is not worried about controversies, which have constantly cropped up with every release of his. "I am sure there will be controversies before the release of 'Gangajal 2'. That is the case with every film of mine. Unnecessary issues are made up and every time a case is filed against my film, I win it. So, I am ready for all that with 'Gangaajal 2' as well," he said. "I have been developing the story of 'Rajneeti 2' since fourfive years. From the original, only two characters Katrina's and Nana Patekar's will be there in the sequel. It will be basically Katrina's story," Jha said. The director is known for his serious dramas, but Jha said he would love to make comedy films also. "I like comedies. If I get a good script I would surely direct one. As of now I have two light-hearted stories in mind. One deals with the relationship of a father-son and the other is a love story. Both will be devoid of heavy-duty elePTI ments," he said.

Tina Desae finds fun in work

antalizing Tina Desae is another ‘overseas import’ to film town having made a successful debut with ‘Yeh Faasley’, and then later noticed in films like ‘Cocktail’, ‘Table No 21’ etc. Her next Hindi release is the much awaited ‘Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene’. In this movie, the glam-babe says, “My character Megha is a journalist being virtuous, self conscious but turns to be a nagging character for her fiancé due to the situation. It was a new experience to play such a vibrant character. It was super fun working with both Zayed Khan and Rannvijay Singh. Both are very naughty, fun loving and full of energy. As it's a comedy film, and Rannvijay being the in-house joker, he also plays a character similar to his real life. But I liked Zayed more as he gives scope to showcase your inputs and also motivates you for good work.

"As you watched the trailer, he (the character) is a frustrated man," said Bachchan who was accompanied by director R Balki and co-actors Dhanush and Akshara Hasan. The 'Shamitabh' team is in the city for a promotional event of the film, scheduled to be released on February 6. When asked about his experience of working under Balki, the Big B said "an actor only follows instructions." "No work is easier in life. People may think that one feels good in front of camera. I have been working in the film industry for many years. Sometimes there remains a fear that what is cameraman thinking of, what is the demand of the script and whether I will fulfil or not," he said. Bachchan said he had done many films with Balki and the latter is like his family member. "But when camera starts rolling, we forget everything, we only remain actors," he said.

I have a fascination for dark characters: Karan Singh Grover K
aran Singh Grover, who is making his Bollywood debut with Bipasha Basu starrer horror film 'Alone', hopes to play dark characters in Bollywood after establishing himself as a romantic hero on the small screen. 'Alone', directed by 'Ragini MMS 2' director Bhushan Patel and produced by Kumar Mangat, releases this Friday. "I want to play someone really dark, like a real bad guy on screen. But I am sure I won't be able to do so because my
fans will not let me do it. They are aggressive. My image is such that no one will allow me to do a negative character," Karan said in an interview here. The actor did not feel it was a risk to make his big screen debut with a horror film, even though this genre is not very popular with the audience. "I really liked the script of 'Alone'. I thought there were a lot unexpected things in the film, which I would want to watch as a viewer. I did not think like I was doing a horror film, I did not think in terms of genre. I decided on the basis of the script." Karan is all praises for Bipasha and said she was a very encouraging co-star which helped him perform better as he was quite nervous as a newcomer. "Bipasha is a very encouraging co-actor. It was great working with her. She is immensely beautiful, you are always in awe of her. She is inspirational. "I was nervous because all the names associated with the film were seasoned and known. Bipasha is a star, Kumar Mangat has been producing film for years and
Bhushan had two hits to his credit so I knew only I could go wrong. I was cautious about not letting anything go wrong," he said. The young star, who recently announced split from TV actress wife Jennifer Winget after two years of marriage, said sometime it is discomforting for him to go about his work amid a personal crisis. "It is difficult that I am at a position where I am going through a professional high but a personal low. It is disturbing and uncomfortable. I try not to think about it but there are times when I feel like being alone, all by myself," he said. The actor was last seen on TV in 2013 on drama 'Qubool Hai' but he does not feel his absence from the small screen has dampened his popularity. "I quit 'Qubool Hai' at the right time. When 'Alone' was offered to me I was learning production and direction. I don't think not being seen on TV for more than a year will affect my popularity or 'Alone'," Karan said. Comparing his experience of working on TV and films, Karan said while the small screen is a training ground for an actor, the big screen is less draining. "TV is like a school. It is easy to shoot for a film. In movies, you have a definite start and end. You know your character is there for a particular period. "For me that is very important because when I work I get involved in my character and try becoming like him and a daily soap goes on for years and you literally become the character you play, especially because you shoot for 12-18 hours a day. You completely lose yourself sometimes as an actor," he said. Karan, however, assured that he has not bid goodbye to TV and said he would love to be a part of a miniseries. The actor, who has signed a threefilm deal with Kumar, said he just concentrates on improving his own craft and is not bothered about competition from other TV actors making their big screen debut. PTI
cations, mainline newspapers and mags had just about realised that Bollywood news sells. Gopalji handled PR for a whole lot of top stars and production houses — and at time, the Southern film industry was ruling the roost. In those days, there was no open rivalry between film people and no secrecy at all. Journalists walked in and out of studios and make-up rooms of stars. It seems strange now, when ‘Keep Out’ signs are all over the place, but back then press people used to be invited to cover shoots, in Mumbai and out-
station. It was the PRO’s task to herd the journos through airports, trains, buses cars or whatever mode of transport was needed to make it to the location. Outdoor shoots used to be a picnic, and Gopalji made sure everybody enjoyed the trip, had time to themselves to see the sights in the city and do their shopping too. The stars used to have meals with the visiting journalists and it was all very pleasant and informal. He would arrange interviews and drop by personally to the journos’ office or residence with photos and stills (this was before
email) of his films. Over a period of time, he knew what kind of story a journalist would be interested in, and carefully handed out ‘exclusives’ so that no publication felt left out. And if you criticised one of his films, he would laugh about it and say, “I didn’t like it either.” Now, if a film by a major production company or star is panned, some of them stop sending the critic preview invites. Gopal Pandey was one of a kind and the last of the one-man PR companies, before the corporate took over. Gopalji, RIP.
Next will be a family film: Bipasha A
ctress Bipasha Basu is finally taking a break from horror genre and will star in a family drama post the release of her upcoming supernatural thriller 'Alone'. Bipasha (36), who is termed as the 'horror queen' of Bollywood after being a part of back-to-back supernatural thrillers, said she is happy to move out of the genre. "I am finally taking a break from horror films. My next is a family drama. I am really happy that I will not have to answer media that why I always do supernatural movies. "The film is very emotional. I am excited about it. As of now, I can't divulge much details about it," Bipasha said. The 'Raaz' star revealed that she was initially hesitant to take up the Bhushan Kumardirected film as she is tired of answering questions about her preference for the genre. "I initially didn't want to do 'Alone' as the media is always after me for doing horror movies. I was exhausted of answering same questions. But, once I read the script, I just couldn't say no to it. The love story in the film is the reason I said yes to it. "I am happy the way 'Alone' has come out. It is one of the finest and slickest horror films ever shot in India. It will help get the genre the credibility it deserves. It is a very scary film. No one should go alone to watch it," she said. 'Alone', a remake of a Thai film, is about a pair of conjoined twins (both played by Bipasha), of which one survives. The one who dies later returns to haunt her sister as a ghost. Bipasha had inhibitions about play-
ing the ghost for the first time as she was not sure if she would be convincing enough for the role. "There was no benchmark for me in terms of playing this role. I had not done something like this before. As an actress, you are used to looking good but here I had to snarl and contort my face. So I was not sure about doing it properly. After every shot, I would look to my director for assurance," she said. The actress is sharing screen space with TV actor Karan Singh Grover, who is making his Bollywood debut with the film. Bipasha said she is happy the two share a good on-screen chemistry. "Karan is a very talented actor and a great co-star. I wanted a co-actor, who would look really good with me on-screen and who can emote well because the love story forms the basis of the film. "Karan and I are very similar in real life. He and Bhushan have become close to me now. I did not have any hangups about acting with a newcomer and I have done in the past too. I am not a difficult actor to work with. PTI

ELBOURNE: Back at the helm after retiring from Tests, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said his team will look for an encore when they start their title defence at the World Cup beginning next month.
Irrespective of what sport you play, it is always a blessing to represent India on the international stage. Cricket is a little tougher back home and only a few people get to wear these colours. So it is good to be here and donning this jersey again.
MAHENDRA SINGH DHONI SKIPPER INDIAN ODI TEAM
"We would definitely like to repeat our performance from 2011. But the change in conditions will be a factor and we will have to play accordingly," Dhoni said at the launch of the team's new ODI kit designed by team-sponsor Nike for the upcoming season. "The Melbourne Cricket Ground is one of the best venues in world cricket, irrespective of the format. We will aim to do better than we have done in ODI format over the last couple of years and hopefully we will be back to play the World Cup final on March
The Indians on the roof of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in their new ODI kit, Melbourne on Thursday. 29," he added. The bugle for the ODI season in Australia has been sounded as for the next twoplus months, fifty-over cricket will take precedence over anything else, starting with the triseries, involving India and England, followed by the 2015 World Cup. India's first tri-series match is on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against Australia, while Dhoni's men will start their World Cup campaign on February 15 in Adelaide when they take on
Brett Lee to retire from all forms of cricket after BBL season S
YDNEY: Former Australia Test fast bowler Brett Lee announced that he will retire from all forms of cricket following the conclusion of the Big Bash League (BBL), thereby drawing curtains to his illustrious 20-year career. The 38-year-old pacer quit from international cricket in July 2012, but has continued to play Twenty20 cricket for Sydney Sixers at the domestic level in the BBL and the Indian Premier League. The final-round BBL clash against cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder next Thursday at the SCG could be Lee's swansong match if the Sixers lose and fail to book a playoff berth. While announcing his decision, Lee said he was both emotional and excited. "After this year, there won't be any more cricket," Lee said. "I'm excited, I'm emotional, I'm happy, but I'm certainly not worried because I know that I've made the right call. "I didn't bother to do the math on it, but it's a lot of ice baths, a lot of training sessions, a lot of cricket balls
Dhoni avoids queries on retirement with a grin
His shock Test retirement is still the talk of the town but India's limited-overs cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued to stay mum about it, avoiding any queries on his stunning decision. Dhoni retired after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, citing the strain of playing all three formats of the game.
However, that explanation could not stop speculation as stories floated about his troubled relationship with Team Director Ravi Shastri and star batsman Virat Kohli, who was eventually named captain of the Test team. These stories were, however, vehemently denied by the BCCI and the team management. Face to face
with the media for the first time after this, Dhoni merely sported a grin on being asked about the retirement and answered in monosyllabics on how he has spent his time post the shocker. "It has been good, a few days off," was his only reply to a question on life after Test retirement, the closest that anybody could get on asking him about it.
arch-rivals Pakistan in their first Pool B encounter. Dhoni, who had shocked the world with his sudden retirement from the longer version of the game after the drawn third Test at the MCG, was back at the helm of the ODI team. "I am rested," he said with his trademark grin, after Virat Kohli had captained India in the drawn fourth Test. "Irrespective of what sport you play, it is always a blessing to represent India on the international stage. Cricket is a little tougher back home and only a few people get to wear these colours. So it is good to be here and donning this jersey again," he added. Kohli, who has been in ominous form in the recent Test series against Australia, said he is looking forward to a good outing at the tri-series and World Cup. "The mindset doesn't change whether we are playing in whites or blue. Every game is important for me when I am representing the country," said Kohli. "I have enjoyed the challenge of playing in Australian conditions and have enjoyed the response from the crowds as well. It was a good Test series for us. Now I am eagerly looking forward to the tri-series and then the World Cup. Back to back World Cup wins will be a nice milestone for this young team. It will do nicely for the new colours that have been unveiled today. That's what we are aiming for as a team, that's what we want to achieve and we have the vision for it," he added.

YDNEY: With the World Cup in the back of their minds, favourites Australia and England will lock horns in the opening match of the ODI cricket tri-series here today, looking to test their squads one last time in the final lead-up to next month's mega-event. High on confidence after the 2-0 Test series win over India, the Australians will face England at the Sydney Cricket Ground before renewing hostilities with the reigning World Cup title holders in Melbourne on Sunday. The tri-series is seen as a final warm-up for all the three teams ahead of the World Cup, to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in less than a month's time. The series will provide players of all the three teams opportunity to find their form and stake a claim in the final XI of their respective

The series will be specially vital for England as the team would look to settle down under new captain Eoin Morgan. In a big decision, England replaced Alastair Cook with Morgan as captain in less than two months before the World Cup to improve their chances.
Under Morgan's leadership, England have piled up runs in their two warm-up games in Canberra, scoring a total of 755. Ian Bell has been in threatening form as he blasted 187 off 145 balls in the 60-run win over the Prime Minister's XI. But skipper Morgan is in desperate need of runs, having scored just one fifty in his

To add to Morgan's woes, England's ODI form has been poor off late and they will look to regain the winning touch after last year's series losses at home to Sri Lanka and India, and away to Sri Lanka. The series is also a chance for England to better their ODI record in Australia.

AMILTON: Sri Lanka ruised to a six-wicket win in the second one-day international against New Zealand, thanks to a masterful century from Tillakaratne Dilshan and a comedy of errors from the Black Caps. Dilshan scored 116 as the visitors comfortably overhauled New Zealand's first innings total of 248 to level the seven-match series 1-1, with Angelo Mathews (39) and Kumar Sangakkara (38) also making valuable contributions. Their efforts came after New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and put the hosts in a strong position with a big-hitting 117, only for his teammates to squander any chance of victory through a series of basic mistakes. The Black Caps lost four wickets to run-outs and a clumsily conceded stumping, effectively handing the match to Sri Lanka. "That's cricket, it's not ideal but it's one of those crazy things," bowler Matt Henry said. Mathews' men struck early when opener Martin Guptill departed for 10 trying to loft Nuwan Kulasekara over midoff, offering an easy catch to continue an indifferent run of form at international level. McCullum responded to the setback with typical aggression, bringing up his second consecutive 50 in 39 balls, including eight boundaries. Dan Vettori lasted only eight balls before he was run out for seven and Taylor was sent packing on 34 when he skied a Herath delivery trying to push the pace. Luke Ronchi did not face a ball before he was run out and Corey Anderson (5) was caught short of his crease chasing a quick single in the next over. Nathan McCullum then had a rush of blood to the head that saw him become New Zealand's fourth runout, just one short of the alltime record in ODIs. Adam Milne at least added some variety when he took a wild swing at Sachithra Senanayake's delivery and his momentum sent him stumbling out of the crease, allowing wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara to stump him for 19. Trent Boult (13) added two sixes but was caught trying for a third off the last ball of the innings. Service Tax department demands Rs 536 crore, BCCI takes legal route By Kushan Sarkar
N
EW DELHI: The BCCI is locked in a legal battle with the Service Tax (ST) department, which has demanded an amount of Rs 536 crore (approx) as taxes on cricket board's earnings from royalty and media rights in the last one decade.
The BCCI has been receiving showcause cum demand notices from the tax authorities since the financial year 2004-05 until 2012-13 and the exact amount accrued is Rs 536.13 crore.
The ST Department has served the richest cricket body in the world as many as 19 show-cause notices in a period of 10 years so far. As per BCCI treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhary's report which is attached with the Annual Report (201314), the BCCI has been receiving showcause cum demand notices from the tax authorities since the financial year 2004-05 until 2012-13 and the exact amount accrued is Rs 536.13 crore. The information is a part of Schedule 15 of the treasurer's report, which says that the ST department has
served 19 showcause cum demand notices during this period. According to the report, treasurer Chaudhary has apprised the board members of the matter saying that the BCCI has challenged and will contest all the claims made by ST dept having taken legal advice in this regard. The board had filed an appeal before Central Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) at the end of the financial year of 2013 has and the matter is still pending. If one goes by the content of the demands made by the Service tax authorities over the years, bulk of it is regarding BCCI's earnings from royalty income and media rights over the years which is in the tune of few thousand crores. According to the report, during the 2005-06, ST demanded an amount of Rs 42.81 crore as tax payable on sponsorship/logo money, royalty income, media rights under categories of Advertising Agency Services and Intellectual Property Services for that particular financial year. BCCI's main objection has been ST categorising their royalty income and income from media rights under the Intellectual Property Services which makes it more taxable.

OLKATA: An all-round show by Manoj Tiwary put Bengal in the driver's seat against Jammu & Kashmir on the third and penultimate day of their Ranji Trophy Group A cricket fixture at the Eden Gardens. The part-time legspinner Tiwary (2/19) claimed two wickets including that of J&K top run getter Bandeep Singh (73; 8x4, 1x6) to bowl the visitors out for 315 in their first essay, giving Bengal a handy 72-run first innings lead. The stylish Bengal batsman then decimated the J&K attack, scoring an unbeaten 52 off 37 deliveries (6x4) as they ended the day at 216 for three, a total lead of 288 runs. "We want to bat tomorrow as well and take the lead to at least 350. Our first target is to secure a draw and then declare as soon as possible," said Tiwary after the third day's play. Gladys keen to do better, win women’s title
MUMBAI: Kenya’s Gladys Kipsoi is determined to put behind her second place finish last year and run away with the top honours in the women’s race of the 2015Mumbai Marathon, which will be flagged off on Sunday. “As every year, this year too we have a very competitive group for this edition of Mumbai Marathon. As the sole bread winner of the family, it has been a long and challenging journey for me. Last year I come second in Mumbai Marathon and come Sunday, I would give my best to see myself emerge clear winner, said Kipsoi, who also ended runner-up Toulouse and Lodz Marathons in 2014. Meanwhile, Kipsoi’s compatriot and the men’s defending champion, Evand Ruto is cautious about his chances. “As a defending champion I’m aware of the fact that all eyes are set on me. And hence have trained to give my all out on Sunday. Mumbai Marathon has always been my best destination to compete and excel. Though last time I missed setting up a new marathon record by a whisker, as half marathon joggers came in between. But this year I’m hopeful that the organisers are doing their best to avoid such a thing,” said the 30year-old Ruto, a ardent football lover. Ruto will have to contend with countrymen Henry Sugut, who is making his debut and Luke Kibet if he hopes to retain his title.

UMBAI: It's been over a year and half since French woman Marion Bartoli retired from tennis when she was at her peak after winning the Wimbledon 2013 championships. The 30-yearold who keeps switching residences from London to Dubai is taking it easy and concentrating on things she craved to do as a tennis player. With having her own jewellery line to designing bags and shoes to competing in marathons, Bartoli seems to be in her comfort zone after a 13year professional career which was marred by injuries. The former double-handed player is in Mumbai as the event ambassador for the Mumbai marathon. Apparently, the former Wimbledon champion, has been to India on three earlier ocassions, her last being in 2007 where she competed in local tournaments. “My last vist was in 2007. I am thrilled to be in India. In totality, I must have stayed around 40 days here over the career spanning 15 years,” said Bartoli. However, Bartoli decided to bring curtains down on her favourtie sport due to persistent injuries, after achieving her goal of conquering a Grand Slam title. “I became pro at the age of 16 years of age and then I went on to play for 13 years. My body couldn't take it further as I was nursing a very bad [right] shoulder injury. Because of the

The extra toll I put on my body made me retire at the age of 29. Now I have time to explore time for myself.” She recounts her ordeal during Wimbledon where she was playing after consuming pain-killers. “It's a short resume for me. They discouraged me. For me, to hold a tennis racquet was a dream. The only person who helped me was my father who was a doctor. He helped me

The way I play, is the natural way of my game.” Speaking on the longevity of players nowadays, especially Serena Williams, she said she seems to be struggling off late and would need to regain full fitness to create an impact during the Australian Open and other major series. “She seemed to have struggled during the Hopman Cup. As you get older, it gets difficult. The new generation is pushing hard. However, when she is fit and ready to compete, she is the best in the world,” she said. Marion added that she wasn't convinced with the change in format referring to the Indian Tennis Professional League and Champions Tennis League terming it as mere 'entertainment'. “This has become a medium of entertainment. They want to copy all the other sports and that can be tricky. Tennis has a lot of history and we shouldn't take it to the extreme.”
