HOPAL/NEW DELHI: The CBI on Wednesday registered three FIRs and formally launched its probe in the Vyapam scam, which generated more political heat, with Congress alleging an accused in the scandal extended favours to Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other BJP and RSS leaders, a charge denied by them. The CBI team, which has been camping in Bhopal for the last two days, registered three cases in connection with the massive rigging of examinations for recruitment in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions, naming among others a member of Madhya Pradesh Backward Classess and Minorities Commission member and his son.
The premier investigating agency also launched a probe into the "mysterious" deaths of five persons associated with the scam. As the agency got down to cracking the cases related to the scandal involving the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), also known by its Hindi acronym Vyapam, Congress released a document purportedly showing Pradhan and some top BJP and RSS functionaries having received favours from a prime accused. Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and

hildren from birth to around twelve years are virtually captives in their own home. The parents control them entirely. Every child is on a leash. It is told what to do and what not to do. What to eat or what not to eat. What clothes to wear and what not. Every step of its life is directed, controlled. Their control seems quite legitimate as children lack the intellect to fend for themselves. But the problem arises when parents and guardians exceed the limits in using their power to govern their children. A common weakness among people is to use their power freely. One needs strength of character to have all the power and not use it unless essential to do so. Children are the most common victims of the abuse of power. It has resulted from the parents’ inability to relate to their children. The parents believe the younger generation has turned defiant, aggressive and even rebellious. In many homes parents and kids have stopped relating to each other. The parents see no fault of their own. They fail to realise the problem of relationship invariably stems from them. From the lack of intellect to assess the psychological traits of their kids. They operate from emotional pressures arising
from their clinging attachment and possessiveness towards their children. And virtually strangulate the helpless children with their ‘love’ and ‘care’. The parents therefore need to realise their inherent weakness and make a careful study of the individual natures of their children. Parents must also note children have no worries of the past or anxieties for the future. As a result children possess extraordinary energy. While parents, older folks are infested with worry and anxiety rendering them tired and fatigued. Both the young and the old are unaware of this natural disparity between them. Thus in their ignorance the older folks curb the activities of the young with restrictions and restraints. The solution to the problem of juvenile impetuousness is not in stifling their actions. But in studying their natural tendencies and giving their irrepressible energy a proper direction. Besides the disparity in energy levels between the young and the old, there is a variation in their mental temperaments as well. Children possess the power of grasping new concepts and ideas faster than their elders. That explains why youngsters take to new trends and

ith no rainfall for a few weeks and it being mid-July already, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has many reasons to worry. In the Standing Committee meeting held on Wednesday, the question of water cuts was raised by Samajwadi Party leader Rais Shaikh as Ramzan approaches. He requested that on the day of Ramzan, water should be provided by the civic body for the entire day in the city, as it would be much required.
MUMBHAI Vikas Sabnis
Modi government is totally responsible for the flood situation in Delhi, and Fadnavis government should be blamed for the drought in Maharashtra!
Other committee members alleged that the BMC had a 10 per cent water cut implemented unofficially. “In case a water cut is implemented, the corporators should have been informed. Also, there are many pockets in Mumbai where Muslim population is dense, and on the day of Ramzan, I want them not to be inconvenienced in any way,” Shaikh said. Apart from the request that water should be supplied right through the day during festivals, issues like unauthorised water connections, leakage and low pressure in water pumps, and borewells not being paid enough attention to as a water source were brought up in the meeting. BJP leader Manoj Kotak opposed the proposal and said, “with all due respect to the festivals of all religions, I think that cases of water stealing and leakage will rise if water supply is increased.” There was a difference in opinions because of the issue of water supply during festivals. Head of Hydraulics Department Ashokkumar Tawadiya was also present to give a report of the lake levels. Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee read out the report on lake levels. He mentioned that there has never been an official announcement of 10 per cent water cut, and in case such a decision is made, the corporators will be informed about it. “There has been 22 per cent less rainfall if we count an average of the last ten years and 33 per cent less in lake levels. Issues like unauthorised water connections will be looked into and borewells will be paid more attention to,” Mukherjee said. He expressed concern over the low level of water in lakes.
the old. Unfortunately, the wellwishing and well-meaning parents fail to recognise the existence of these glaring differences in natures. Instead, they try to treat this nagging problem with an iron hand. However, if the parents, guardians desire their young to adopt a better lifestyle, change from a licentious to a disciplined way of living, they must possess and live those values themselves. Must set the example of living the higher values of life and refrain from giving sermons to their wards. But the general trend the world over is quite the contrary. The parents do not set the example of a disciplined life and keep ordering their children to be disciplined. Therein lies a double fault. It can never work that way. The famed German scientist, Albert Einstein observes: Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means.

sserting that the Shiv Sena had kept its poll manifesto promise made before the October 2014 assembly elections about reducing the weight of school bags, Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray stated that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated e-tender for the same and that by next academic year the elearning Tab will be made available to the students of Std VIII in all the BMC schools. He said this yesterday while speaking to news persons at Vidhan Bhavan after presenting one educational Tab to Minister for School Education Vinod Tawde at his Vidhan Bhavan office. The Yuva Sena president disclosed that recently students of an entire class at Balmohan Vidyamandir, Dadar were presented with the educational Tab thereby relieving them of the burden of their school bags. Thackeray junior stated that the educational Tab for Standards VIII to X will contain the entire syllabus and will be complete with maps, info graphics, revision tests, interactions and will be available in all languages that are taught in BMC schools. He said that the Committee set up by the government to look into the issue of reducing the weight of school bags has a positive note on the Tab and has met Sena president Uddhav Thackeray recently. Thackeray stated that the Tab will also be later on distributed to

Commenting on the frequent load shedding in rural Maharashtra, he said that the Tab will be provided with a solar powered charger. Thackeray junior stated that modalities are being worked out as to how to provide these e-learning Tabs through MLA funds or MPLAD funds. He added that ever since the Sena has started virtual classrooms in some BMC

Welcoming the Yuva Sena president's initiative, Tawde stated that such novel visual quotient teaching methods registers well on the minds of young students. He gave an assurance that the government will make a policy statement in the ongoing monsoon session about the e-learning Tab. He added that the government too was of the need to reduce the burden of textbooks and school bags of students.

Autism and genetic changes are interlinked Scientists have discovered a link between autism and genetic changes in some segments of DNA that are responsible for switching on genes in the brain. The finding is the result of a world-first study of the
human brain that identified more than 100 of these DNA segments, known as enhancers, which are thought to play a vital role in normal development by controlling gene activity in the brain. "Our study provides a unique resource of information on gene function in the human brain which could help reveal the basis of autism and related neurological disorders," said lead author Irina Voineagu of
University of New South Wales (UNSW) School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences. A lot of research on the genetic causes of diseases, including autism, focuses on mutations in genes - the segments of DNA that contain the blue-print for producing proteins in the cell. However, protein-coding DNA accounts for less than 5 per cent of the full human genetic code. The rest of the DNA is not

just a lot of junk. Some segments of it - the enhancers - control when, and in which parts of the body, the genes become active. These enhancers can harbour disease-causing mutations which would be missed in traditional studies of genes, but which are suspected of playing an important role in inherited neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

HOLY FESTIVAL AHEAD… ISKCON monks and painters give final touches to the chariot of Lord Jagannath ahead of Rath Yatra festival in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Which type of drunk personality are you? Do you know which type of drunk you are - a menacing Mr Hyde or a friendly Mary Poppins? Psychologists have found that people turn into one of four character types when drunk. These include the Ernest Hemingway who is barely affected by excessive alcohol; the Mary Poppins who is friendly and compassionate and the Nutty Professor who is transformed from a quiet type to a confident extrovert. Worst of all is the menacing and hostile Mr Hyde, researchers said, adding that most people who fall into the last category were women. Psychologists at the University of MissouriColumbia asked more than 360 men and women to complete a personality test: once when they were sober and once when they were under the influence of alcohol. The results showed that the largest group of drunks were the Hemingways, who changed very little. Hemingways were almost exactly as reliable, organised and prompt intoxicated as when they were sober, and they had very little trouble with their intellects, imaginations and abstract ideas. Two previous studies have
found that, on average, [intellect and conscientiousness] reportedly decrease the most with intoxication, so the moderate decreases demonstrated by this group make its members stand out as being 'less affected' than drinkers in some of the other groups - much like the author Ernest Hemingway, who claimed that he could 'drink hells any amount of whiskey without getting drunk'. Named after the main character of two Disney films who is chemically transformed into a more outgoing character, the Nutty Professors were transformed from quiet, introverted people to loud, brash drunks after a few drinks. The group includes far more men than women. The Mary Poppins drunk could be guaranteed not to start a drunken argument or fall over in a bar and instead was a friendly, compassionate drinker. They decrease less than average in conscientiousness, intellect and agreeableness when intoxicated. The umbrella-twirling nanny Mary Poppins is the lead character in a series of children's books written by P L Travers. The menacing Mr Hyde drunks, named after the sinister alter-ego of Dr Jekyll

he issue of farmers' loan waiver rocked the state Council yesterday. The house was adjourned consequently for the third day, after opposition members refused to let the house function until the government agrees to their demands of waiver. The house was adjourned for the day
without transacting any business. Sunil Tatkare (NCP) said, “From the last two days, the opposition has been demanding that the chief minister take back his words that farmers' loans will not be waived off and then discuss the issue. In the recent past, the woman farmer whom the CM had met in Yavatmal district and assured of government help, committed suicide. Devendra Fadnavis might be having personal credibility, but his credibility as a chief minister is under attack.” “The Sena today is in power. Thackeray himself demanded waiver of farmers' loans,” Tatkare added further.
Significantly, Tatkare's direct comments drew support from other opposition members who started sloganeering against the government and stormed into the well of the house demanding justice for farmers. Revenue and Agriculture Minister and leader in the upper house Eknath Khadse then got up amidst the din and sought protection from the opposition members and a chance to speak on the issue. He said, “The opposition's corruption has got us to this state today. There was widespread corruption in corporations in their tenure and today they are asking for loans to be waived off.” Khadse's comments drew

more criticism from the opposition and the Chairman adjourned the house for 50 minutes. As soon as the house re-assembled, the opposition members once again stormed into the well of the house raising anti-government banners. Panel Chairman Janardan Chandurkar had to then adjourn the house for another 15 minutes. Immediately after re-assembling, the ruckus continued that led to Chandurkar adjourning the house for over another 10 minutes. Subsequently, an unrelenting opposition forced Deputy Chairman Vasant Davkhare to adjourn the house for the day.

first year resident doctor of KEM hospital was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Another shocking case of a doctors contracting T.B came to the fore, when a female first year resident doctor from KEM Hospital has been diagnosed with tuberculosis, and is presently undergoing treatment. 11 cases at KEM Hospital 15 cases at Sion Hospital 9 cases at Nair Hospital 5 cases at JJ Hospital
Dr Sagar Mundada, President of Medical Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) dwelling on the apathy of the authorities said, “She has only received a leave of 15 days from the higher authorities. This comes at a time when the resident doctors have been literally begging to be grant two months leave for TB and maternity, as it's the duration of intensive phase of treatment with maximum side effects and maximum infection risk to other patients. It's unfortunate to note how many more resident doctors will have to be victimised before our genuine demands will be agreed to in the form of a government resolution which was ensured to us. We are now going to human rights body regarding such inhuman behaviour to resident doctors, as regards our working hours. They work sometimes right through for 24 hours at a stretch, without a single day leave, no Diwali, no Eid or any other festivals for residents doctors”. KEM hospital Dean Dr. Avinash Supe said, “I will grant two months leave to the doctor, even more if

Sena says don't give religious tone to Yakub Memon hanging on July 30 By A Special Correspondent
S
enior Shiv Sena MLC Dr Neelam Gorhe urged political parties and others not to give religious tone to the possible hanging of Yakub Memon on July 30. He is one of the accused of the March 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts. Speaking to news persons at Vidhan Bhavan here yesterday she said that Yakub Memon has been tried and convicted by the trial court and his mercy petition has been rejected by the President of India. Urging people not to indulge in partisan and communal politics over such a sensitive issue, she said that the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts had seen many people lose their lives and many were injured for life. Lives of many families were destroyed then. Gorhe stated that the centre and the state government will take appropriate decision on the issue in accordance with the provisions of the law. She added
that stringent punishment should be meted out to those who commit such heinous crimes. She also refuted the charge that the government was trying to indulge in some sort of marketing. However, Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi yesterday created a stir by contending that the crime committed by Yakub Memon was not that big to have warranted such a sentence. The Supreme Court is to hear a curative petition filed by Yakub
Memon on his death sentence on July 21. Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray who came to meet Minister for School Education Vinod Tawde at Vidhan Bhavan declined to make any comment on the issue. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said his government would follow the directives of the Supreme Court on the issue. "Whatever we do will be made public at an appropriate time," said Fadnavis, who is in New Delhi on Wednesday. "The Supreme Court has made a decision on this issue. Whatever directives will be given by the court, the Maharashtra government will act according to that. We will provide more information on this matter when the time is right," Fadnavis said. If the execution is carried out, it will be the first in connection with the violence that rocked Mumbai resulting in the death of over 250 people in 1993.

Continued from pg 1 « However, after a week or so the father of Tabassum, Rahim Sheikh alias Feroze, found another boy with better prospects for his daughter Tabassum. Therefore he decided to cancel and revoke the engagement which took place between Salman and Tabassum in the month of September 2014. However, since Tabassum liked Salman and Salman also liked her, Tabassum wanted to marry Salman and no one else. Therefore on a couple of occasions she without informing her parents - left her parental house and landed up at the house of the petitioner to meet Salman. In such circumstances, the petitioner and her family members tried to convince Tabassum and asked her to go to her parents house but she refused. Therefore, the petitioner and her family members took her to Ghatkopar Police Station and asked the father of Tabassum to collect her. Accordingly, the father of Tabassum came to Police Station and took custody of Tabassum and brought her back home.” The petition further added, “On January 3, 2015 Tabassum again without informing her parents came to my house. At that time Tabassum’s father and mother came to my house and started assaulting me and Salman. Therefore, Salman and I called the police by dialing 100. Accordingly the police took me and Salman to the Police Station. There one Police Officer Shirsat who was present and handling the matter of this Tabassum. In front of the said Officer, the father of Tabassum threatened Salman that he will kill him. However, the said officer did not take the cognizance of the same. The said police officer Shirsat kept Tabassum and Salman standing outside the police station house for almost three three hours. After some time, due to the harassment from police Salman and Tabassum disappeared from the Police Station. They disappeared and were not found by, any one for several days. Shameem said that as Salman and Tabassum absconded and disappeared and were not found by any one. Therefore, police started harassing me, my husband Alam Khan and our relatives. Rahim Shaikh alias Feroze has influenced police officers to harass us.” Criminal lawyer advocate Prakash Wagh, who is representing Shameen in this writ petition in the High Court told the ADC, “On June 5, 2015 in the afternoon at about 1.00 or 1-30 pm a police officer from Ghatkopar Police Station Narvekar came to the house of Petitioner forcibly took her, her husband and one friend of Salman viz, Ashraft (16) to Ghatkopar Police

The said Police asked Shameem, her husband and Ashraf about the whereabouts of Salman and Tabassum when they all said that they do not know their whereabouts. The Police got furious. As per instructions of Yakub Mulla all these Police Officers started assaulting them. Shameem, her husband and said Ashraf tried to request them not to beat them mercilessly as Shameem and her husband is suffering from heart ailment, blood pressure, diabetes. So also Ashraf is a minor. However, the prayers of the Shameem, her husband and Ashraf
went on deaf years of the police officers. The lady police assaulted Shameem with the belt of flour mill, due to assault of said belt on the ear of Shameem's led to severe pain, her ear became non-working, due to that her head was paining and she felt uneasy. Due to mercilessly beating by belt Shameem's palms became dark and swollen. Therefore, Police officer Shirsat asked Shameem to banged her palms against the floor. Due to pain she could not banged her palms on the floor therefore the said Shirsat again assaulted Shameem on her palms by the said belt. In the assault Shameem lost hear earing. Therefore she tried to find out the said ring at that time the said Shirsat assaulted Shameem by the belt of flour mill on her hands and legs. The lady police dragged Shameem from here to there by holding her hair. At last, Shameem fell down and fainted. Before Shameem fell down she also saw that her husband was assaulted by Yakub Mulla, Shirsat and Narvekar. The police also assaulted minor Ashraf mercilessly. One thing she noticed that the police who assaulted Petitioner and others had consumed alcohol when they were beating them. The police detained Shameem, her husband and Ashraf upto 9.30 pm. Due to assault
Shameem, her husband and Ashraf were substantially injured. They could not even walk properly. Some how they reached home. However, after half an hour, police officer Narvekar and another police again came to Shameem's house and took her, her husband to Ghatkopar Police station and they were detained upto next date and released on June 6, 2015 at 5.30 p.m only.” He further added, “Petitioner’s ear was paining severely, feeling giddiness and headache she went to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment. After examining her, the doctor from Rajawadi Hospital informed the petitioner that her eardrums has been perforated at two places and due to that she has lost her power of hearing from the said ear. Shameem states that as Salman and Tabassum were not found by the police, they frequently called Shameem, her husband and their other relatives, detained them in police station for several hours, sometimes continuously more than 24 hours, assaulted them mercilessly and atrociously. During the said illegal detention and ill treatment, Police did not allow Petitioners and others to have food or medicines. The Petitioner stated that due to unbearable pain because of merciless assault from the police officers, decided to redress her grievances to higher authorities of police failure to take action against the police officers, therefore she gave written complaints to the higher authorities and explained them how she has been subjected the atrocity and physical and mental harassment. However, the higher police officials including the Senior police inspector did not pay attention towards it and not taken any action against them. The petitioner’s son Salman approached the Sessions Court, Mumbai for anticipatory bail. During the hearing in the Sessions Court, Mumbai, Rahim Khan alias Feroze assaulted Salman. Therefore, Salman immediately made the complaint to the Court and the learned Sessions Court Judge instructed the Ghatkopar Police to give protection to Salman while attending the hearing. The superior officer is not paying heed towards grievances of the petitioner, her son and her husband. Hence, petitioner is approaching this Court to take appropriate action against the concerned police officials as per the provisions of law.” The matter will come up for hearing in the Bombay High Court next week. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Operation Muskan: 113 children reunited with kin in a fortnight

A GRAND DEED BY GRANDAD: Dilip Dode, the 50-year-old grandfather takes total care of his two-months premature grand child.

O
n May 30th a two months premature baby born to Mamata and Ajay Dode, residents of Palghar district in Maharashtra, was diagnosed with microcephaly, a neuro-developmental disorder in which the head circumference of the newly-born child is significantly smaller than normal. Doctors of the Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital cared for the baby and today the baby was discharged. A tragedy occurred after the birth of the baby, as it was rejected by her own mother for being born with abnormal looks, According to doctors of Wadia hospital the mother is suffering from a post-partum depression, which may be a reason that made her reject the baby. But the baby's grandfather fifty year old Dilip Dode playing the role of guardian willingly accepted the baby and said, “I will do everything for my sweet heart, I am happy and blessed with the baby though the baby was rejected by her own mother but I am very much there to take care of the baby and now baby has started accepting the oral feed and showing the positive signs of improvement , I will pray to my God to give the baby good health and bless her with a good life”. The baby was treated at Wadia hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Maybe, a girl born with imperfections is considered a bad omen, but the news of a paternal dedicated grandfather taking total care of his newborn granddaughter has come as a breath of fresh air. Doctors at Wadia hospital said that they have never seen a grandfather with so much dedication, bestowing loving and care on any infant. In rural areas, girl children do not get as much
attention as their male counterparts, sometimes even medical aid is not provided in some cases. “In this case, the mother rejected her own baby because of her looks, but Dilip has been there for the baby like a mother. The only worry he had was medical expenses, which has been taken care by us and also baby has started accepting the oral feed and showing positive signs of improvements," says Dr Minnie Bondhanwala, CEO of Wadia Hopsital. Neuro surgeon, Dr Harshad Purandare said, “Microcephaly is a neuro developmental disorder, usually affecting newborns, impaired intellectual development has been observed in some cases, and disturbances in motor functions may not appear until later in life. But through training they might respond and live a normal life under observation. Improvement of motor functions and speech is slightly delayed. Hyperactivity and intellectual disability are common occurrences, although the level of each varies. The baby is responding positively to treatment, there will be no problem for her in future and with the help of medical treatment, she can surely progress”.

Ponder awhile... “The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.” — Bruce Feirstein
A weird happening T I
s it possible to have any kind of communication again with Pakistan? Nawaz Sharif has fooled our prime minister. Modi has signed a joint statement with Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif in Russia. Now we know all that is just a big joke. Never before has there been any such weird behaviour between two nations anywhere in the world. Pakistan cannot be trusted at all. We just cannot have any sort of dealings with that country. Pakistan does not follow any norms in international behaviour. There was an agreement, for instance, guns would fall silent along the LoC. In fact it has been identified: In the last three days, there have been ceasefire violations three times. Heavy firing has been resumed. A woman and two BSF jawans have been wounded. The firing goes on unabated, as Pakistan keeps trying to push terrorists into Kashmir. It is time for India to cut off all relations with our untrustworthy neighbour. For Pakistan, there is nothing like, mutually understanding and trusting relationship. It can cancel a signed agreement after just one day with an announcement. Prime Minister Modi has been silent on the subject. He has his own reasons for remaining silent. He must have been terribly hurt. Between the nations of the world, an accepted code of conduct is in place. A national head does not talk about peace, about fighting terror jointly, sign a joint statement and go back to his country and let border violations take place and resort to doublespeak.

HE recent round of talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif has raised a new ray of hope and a new wave of media gossip. Not that leaders of the two ever-fighting nations met for the first time. There have been more than a dozen occasions, when premiers of the two warring nations had either informal meetings or formal summits to resolve the differences but in vain. Apart from regular annual occasions to meet during UN General Assembly in New York and SAARC conferences every two years, there had been Tashkent summit between late Lal Bahadur Shastri and Ayub Khan, Shimla conclave between late Indira Gandhi and Z.A. Bhutto, Agra meeting between Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif and Agra summit between Vajpayee and General Pervez Musharraf. Unfortunately all these efforts failed and they failed miserably. However, hope is always immortal and keeps finding new avenues for strengthening its existence. After a lot of water flew under the bridge in both the nations, Modi and Sharif once again came on the same platform, this time at Ufa, a little known town in Russia. The two leaders apparently had a cordial talk and decided to meet again. Modi also decided to visit Pakistan in September 2016. Again the same predictable reactions on the outcome of the deliberations started pouring in. Some welcomed the development while some like Omar Abdullah, former CM of J&K, was pessimistic. Shiv Sena vehemently opposed any such talk before the issue of handing over of 26/11 Mumbai attack accused and Dawood Ibrahim were handed over to India. In short, the media received a good fodder once again. The great scientist and philosopher, Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result. If this is true, it is aptly applicable to India's policy towards Pakistan over last five decades, particularly since 1966 when Shastri signed apeace treaty at Tashkent.
Pakistan remains defiantly unyielding The pattern of periodic oscillation between diplomatic engagement and disengagement is wearily familiar. There are repeated occasions when provocative acts by Pakistan leads India to call off diplomatic dialogue, insisting that it can only be resumed if Pakistan meets certain preconditions; there follows an uneasy peace. Pakistan remains defiantly unyielding; eventually, India is compelled to take the lead and return to the negotiating table despite there being no change in Pakistani behaviour along the lines demanded by us. Modi seemed determined to break this jinx by his bold and imaginative move in inviting Sharif, for his swearing-in ceremony last year. Yet only a few months later, the gov-

ernment called off talks between the two countries' foreign secretaries on the grounds that Pakistan had violated an Indian ‘red line’ by conferring with leaders of the Hurriyat Conference ahead of these talks. Even in the past, India had itself facilitated such meetings. This seemed a poorly thought-through decision even at that time. It was never clear why the Modi government had chosen to draw a ‘red line’ on this matter: hitherto diplomacy had been suspended owing to Pakistan's sponsorship of terrorism against India. In retrospect, it seems that the government wanted to signal that it would engage Pakistan, but only on its own terms. It was very difficult, if not impossible to ride this diplomatic high-horse. Even a cur-
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut sory analysis of India-Pakistan relations in the past few years would have pointed this out. But the Modi government stuck to its line. The diminishing returns of painting ourselves into a corner were evident by the beginning of this year. The first vivid indication was the visit of Foreign Secretary Jaishankar's to Islamabad as part of his "SAARC yatra". Curiously at the same time, India was talking about a pro-active strategy in dealing with Pakistan's support for terrorism and its violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir. The National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, was previously on record claiming that the Indian strategy towards Pakistan should shift from a defensive posture to a defensive-offensive posture. Mr. Doval had added: "You can do one Mumbai and you may lose Balochistan". This apparently means that India will if necessary take the fight to Pakistan. The government seemed utterly oblivious of the strategic and diplomatic consequences of making such bombastic claims. If this was not enough, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar periodically warned Pakistan of a disproportionate response in the event of ceasefire violations. He also claimed that India was not averse to using terrorists to target terrorists in Pakistan. These statements played into Pakistan's hands by allowing it to claim that India is involved in supporting terrorism.
Osho’s enlightened quotes
To worsen the situation, Pakistani Defence Minister had said recently that Pakistan's nuclear weapons "were not for display alone": they would be used if the country's survival was at stake. The Pakistan army's behaviour has also turned more aggressive, especially along the border and the LoC.
NSAs will meet to discuss The joint statement issued after the Ufa meeting between Modi and Sharif mentions that the two NSAs will meet to discuss "all issues connected to terrorism". Against the backdrop of the public comments made by Indian officials and ministers, Pakistan will bring up Balochistan and other non-issues merely to counter Indian claims. It is unwise to prejudge diplomatic outcomes, but in this case it may be best not to hope for anything much to come out of this proposed meeting. The story also has an Afghanistan angle. Modi's return to the negotiating table comes at a time when Pakistan's hand on Afghanistan is very strong. Islamabad will obviously seek to shrink the Indian presence in Afghanistan as a quid pro quo for facilitating a deal with the Taliban. The gains made by India in Afghanistan over the past decade are in danger of slipping away. There will be wider consequences of India being circled out of Afghanistan. Many political and diplomatic observers and commentators, during the Prime Minister's recent visit to Central Asia, claimed that India was at last an active player in the geopolitics of the region. Such fantasies are apparently immune to the realities of geography. Without a working relationship with Pakistan and close ties with Afghanistan, India's ability to project influence and power in Central Asia is extremely limited, the observers believe. If this is true, then India has to take two steps forward to make a level-playing field with Pakistan. Nevertheless, even if the context and timing are unpropitious, Modi's decision to reach out to Pakistan must be welcomed. By agreeing to travel to Pakistan for the next SAARC summit, he has raised expectations of progress. Inevitably, there will be attempts by various groups in Pakistan to play the spoiler and pressures from his own base to act tough. Let's hope that Modi can stay the diplomatic course. Indo-Pak relations have always remained on a frying pan. Whatever Modi may do to normalize the relations, there is very little hope to have formidable and amicable atmosphere conducive to mutual growth to sustain for a long time. Whether cricket, exchange of artistes or liberating visa rules; all remain only a pain-killer. The disease and wounds are neither cured nor healed. That's the story of mutually preserved India-Pakistan story of hatred! Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut

THE verdict of Lodha Committee banning Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years is a mild punishment. There should have been a five year ban or the IPL itself should have been banned. Because of spot fixing and match fixing in IPL, people have lost interest in the game of cricket. Anyway how does IPL help Indian Cricket? The selectors say performance in IPL is not a yard stick for selection in the Indian team. So IPL just remains an extravagant tournament where the rich show off their money and muscle power. As of now small fishes like Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan, Ajit Chandila have got caught but the sharks are still out in the open. Why did the BCCI plead to the Supreme Court not to make public the cricketers named in the report placed in a sealed envelope by the probe committee headed by Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal? One would definitely be interested to see the list of names mentioned in the report. Finally, a big thank you to Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the IPL spot fixing scandal. — Mahesh, Nair, Dombivili

Sania Mirza INDIA’S wonder tennis ace Sania Mirza with her doubles win with Martina Hinges in the Wimbledon final has made India a sporting powerhouse. In fact in a short span too, since she won the doubles last March and the victory marked the duo’s first Grand Slam. Undoubtedly, Sania has turned out to be the top rank in the women’s doubles, a first for an Indian and a beacon of inspiration for budding tennis players in India. Over and above, athletes like Sania Mirza, Abhinav Bindra and Sushil Kumar bear testimony to the country’s sporting potential. It is a matter of pride that the politicians and Sports bodies have started showering accolades on Sania. However, her success is despite the Indian sporting infrastructure not because of it. LETTERS IPL seems like Indian Plunder League
IT was a historical triple bonanza for the Indians at Wimbledon this year as Sania Mirza, Leander Paes and youngster Sumit Nagal won the women's doubles, mixed doubles and junior doubles respectively in what was a festive memorable occasion for each of their countrymen at the Mecca of tennis. Sania Mirza played her heart out at the Center court partnering Martina Hingis to fulfill her dream of winning a Wimbledon title and the win was her fourth Grand Slam of her career. Martina Hingis was the common factor between Sania and Leander as the Swiss lady played incredible tennis alongside Paes to help the legendary Indian win his 16th Grand Slam title of his career. Old wine matures with age and Leander Paes not only is enjoying his tennis but playing exceeding well each passing year and Wimbledon has been a happy hunting ground for this iconic player and we all salute him for his spirit and talent. WAR of cricket czars and players continue to haunt Indian Cricket and IPL extravaganza is hitting headlines ever since Lalitgate controversy cropped up. The trouble stricken Lalit Modi is spilling the beans and one by one all the heads are falling like nine pins. APROPOS 'When Pancham composed a song mid-air! '(ADC, July 14), it is indeed intriguing to learn about the method of madness that RD (Pancham) used to posses. The Indian music world is aware of the indigenous way of creating the magnificent lyrics that he had produced. As Shantanu Maitra the Bollywood music director in the "Zee Bangla" channel currently being telecast, did mention that certain RD composed Bollywood film songs would be loved for ever by the music buffs as these lyrics are just unforgettable. It is indicated by Gulzar, a great friend of RD that while driving through the Mumbai roads he used to hum the tunes. Shammi Kapoor, in the Teesri Manzil film, commented about Rahul for a hit song that he had composed, that RD was nothing but a genius and his prediction turned out to be true. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

There are a lot of 'saas bahu' shows on TV nowadays but this Zee Marathi serial ‘Nanda Saukhya Bhare’ which starts July 20, Monday to Saturday at 7.30 pm, is a 'saas bahu' show with a difference. ADC spoke to the ‘bahu’ in the show, Rutuja Bagwe who is very confident about the success of the show. Here is what the debutant actor has to tell us. By Sandeep Hattangadi
What is different in this 'saas bahu' show? The story is about Swanandi Deshpande, played by me, a strong willed and honest girl. Swanandi hates lies and believes in living truthfully. Contrary to this, Lalita Jahagirdar (Suhas Deshmukh) is a shrewd and cunning woman who uses manipulative ways and cons people into getting her work done. When Lalita seeks a suitable daughter-in-law for her son Neel, (Chinmay Udgirkar) Vacchi (Varsha Dandale) the aunt, willingly steps forward to help her with her search. In this process Lalita terribly insults Vacchi who then determines to find her a ‘perfect’ daughter-in-law who would break Lalita’s ego. What happens next? Now begins the drama where Vacchi starts manipulating Lalita into liking Swanandi. Vacchi is determined that Swanandi is the perfect match for someone like Lalita. Only she can fix Lalita’s egos. Vacchi weaves a web of situations wherein Lalita finds no escape and ends up getting Neel married to Swanandi.
Is life rosy for Swanandi after marriage? Swanandi, who loves to live life in a sweet and simple manner is married into a

HOW SOCIETY REACTS Indian society may be becoming more open-minded, but we still have a long way to go until we are comfortable with openly discussing homosexuality. Bobby Darling is perhaps the best example of this. Born Pankaj Sharma, he faced a lot of ridicule for being homosexual. But, he is still unabashed about discussing his sexuality, which is worth noting in a society like the one we live in. There are several examples of the struggles that homosexuals face in India. Sushant Divgikar, winner of the Mr. Gay India 2014 pageant, tells us what he thinks about society’s reaction to homosexuality. He says, “I don’t really understand why homosexuality is an issue. While the root cause behind this discrimination is lack of education, it’s also time for our government to wake up and smell the coffee! I have had some heart-warming experiences though, like when I was in a reality show and my co-contestant, Pritam Singh, told me that he had never had a gay friend. He said that I was such a nice person and so flamboyant, that it actually changed his mindset towards homosexuals. He hails from a small town and had a different perspective on the matter before he got to know me. When I heard this, I felt like there was something I could do to change the notion of how homosexuals are perceived in our country.” While belonging to the LGBT community can be tough, Devarshi Gohil, a 24-year-old architect, thinks that homosexuality has come a long way. She says, “I think it’s more socially acceptable to be a part of the LGBT community today. As a ’90s kid, and as someone who identifies herself as part of this community, I’ve noticed a shift in people’s attitude towards the issue. From being a term that was used to bully or demean people, it has now become a topic that is accepted, and even trendy and socially relevant. However, the one thing that hasn’t changed, is how people believe that they have the right to judge your sexuality for you.” Nolan Lewis, Mr. Gay India 2013, was bullied by other boys in his school for being “different,” but he feels more accepted today. He tells us, “I have been out as a gay man ever since I was nineteen. I’m 30-years-old now. I was nervous about my decision to participate in Mr. Gay World, especially about my family’s safety, because we still live in a society that has an ambiguous stance towards sexual minorities. However, I was relieved to return to a country of people who were supportive and encouraged my decision to be true to who I am. Despite the Supreme Court’s disappointing judgement on Section 377, I still believe in India’s democratic structure. I live as a gay man who has come out of the closet and I encounter individuals every day who are respectful and even curious about what it is like to be homosexual.”

Unless you live under a rock, you know that there’s been an ongoing battle to decriminalise Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and an attempt to alter the way our society talks about and deals with homosexuality. Since the news of America’s recent legalisation of gay marriage has been doing the rounds on social media, the Woman’s World Team spoke to a few people in the city to see if we’re any closer to making it less of a taboo in India

SO, WHY IS HOMOSEXUALITY STILL TABOO In IndIA? Homosexuality has always been taboo, but while the West is becoming more accepting of sexual minorities, India still has a long way to go. We spoke to two people in the city to find out why this attitude isn’t changing in our country.

People need to evolve Gay rights activist, Harish Iyer, tells us, “Being gay is taboo in our country for several reasons. One of them is that Indians are hypocritical. For instance, we have sex all the time, but do we talk about it? No! Another reason is that we blame the West for homosexuality. You only have to read our history to realise why this is an incorrect assumption. Finally, Indians have just started using the word condom, so how can you expect them to be open to the idea of homosexuality so quickly?” While Harish is angry about how slow the progress is, he also believes that India is slowly getting accustomed to the idea. He explains, “Indian media has come of age, so there is a general mood in favour of gay rights, but only in certain pockets of society. This is primarily because Indian society still needs to evolve on a bigger level.”

>> Indian society still has a long way to go when it comes to accepting homosexuality
Playing by the rules Paras Sharma, programme coordinator at iCALL Helpline, tells us that there are two dominant forces — patriarchy and heteronormitivity — that make homosexuality taboo in India. He says, “India is a very patriarchal and heteronormitive nation. Patriarchy is a common problem in our country, where men define the sexual and reproductive roles for both, men and women. Heteronormitivity implies that being heterosexual is the norm. It’s the upper class, heterosexual male who dominates the public discourse in our country. Also, there is a lack of awareness about homosexuality. This stems from the fact that sex itself is considered taboo and so, homosexuality as a taboo gets elevated.” He adds that religion plays an important role in perpetuating the misconceptions. “All religions preach that homosexuality is wrong — this is one aspect where they all unite!” he tells us
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? The age-old issue of misunderstood children and old-fashioned parents is being re-written today, for the most part. Parents are either ignorant of their children’s individual struggles, or they try to mould them according to a particular image that they feel is acceptable to society. And, while letting your parents see you as a unique individual with sexual needs is usually an uncomfortable part of growing up, for some, it’s an even bigger issue. Sushmit Sen, a 28-year-old copywriter, told his family about his sexual preferences only after he graduated. In fact, his friends were the first ones to know. He tells us, “I didn’t open up to anyone because I thought it was nobody’s business but my own. I didn’t date anyone from within my circles and didn’t engage in conversation with my parents at the time. After college, I came out to my closest friends, and eventually, told my parents.” Luckily for him, the experience turned out to be a good one. “The problem is that our parents don’t want to believe that their children are sexually active before marriage. I was not comfortable discussing sex with my folks before I became an adult. When I was ready, I came out to them and even clarified their doubts. They’re definitely supportive, but they don’t go around telling everyone that I’m gay. There is so much more to me than just my sexuality,” he explains. On the other hand, for 21-year-old Jeet Dalvi, coming out was a nerve-wracking experience. He tells us, “There was a
A WORd fROM THE WISE Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, from the royal family of the former princely state of Rajpipla in Gujarat, is one of the leading gay rights activists in India. He is the founder of the Lakshya Trust and is also the goodwill ambassador of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation India. His own experience of coming out gave him a new perspective about our society. He tells us that he doesn’t blame society for being unwilling to accept homosexuality, he blames its ignorance. He tells us, “When I came out, everyone was against me. But, I was determined to be truthful... you can’t live your life on falsehoods.” A good point that he raises is about the hypocrisy that exists in our country. He points out that from sculptures and paintings to texts such as the Kama Sutra, there is ample evidence that homosexuality has been part of our culture. He adds, “I believe that the imposition of Section 377 by the British is one of the reasons that homosexuality is taboo in our society.” The way ahead is to educate people. He adds, “From a personal experience, I can tell you that, people who’ve been shown to have homophobic tendencies have changed their beliefs once they become educated and were provided with the right information. For example, the police department today takes part in our organisational events and activities, now that we’ve explained the facts to them.” Regarding the equation between a parent and a child, he says, “Parents should love their children for who they are. Being homosexual is natural, just like being right or left-handed. You wouldn’t stop loving your child for being left-handed, would you?”
long wait because I was too scared to do it by myself. I believe that when your parents accept you, you need no other validation. Eventually, as I started to live life on my own terms without being dictated by societal norms, I was much happier. However, when I did tell my parents, I wasn’t just nervous; I was paranoid. My mother is my best friend and hiding such a big part of my life from her had been eating away at me. I couldn’t afford to lose her. It was an awful experience and I even went through a couple of psychiatric treatments for depression and hallucinations. Now, my mother just wants me to get into a relationship with a decent guy. Initially, she was apprehensive about discussing my sexuality with my father, because she believed that he wouldn’t understand, which hurt me. She is concerned and unhappy most of the time because she fears that I’ll end up alone once she’s gone. After all, she is an Indian mother and is accustomed to melodrama. She’s unhappy with the recent judgment of the Supreme Court and wants me to go abroad as soon possible because she thinks it’s unsafe for me to stay here”
If YOU nEEd A HAnd…
Whatever path you choose, dealing with your sexuality isn’t always easy. But there are centres and helplines that you can contact if you need someone to talk to. n iCALL Helpline: 25563291 (Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 10pm) n Humsafar Centre: 26673800 (Drop-in centre for gays and lesbians; meets on Fridays from 6pm to 9pm) n India Centre for Human Rights and Law: Human Rights Group with a separate division for gay/ lesbian/ bisexual rights
HAndLInG THE HURdLES
So, how do people deal with these hurdles without hiding or compromising on who they are? We gather experiences and find out what a relationship counsellor thinks “The power of the press shocked me”
“My biggest fear surrounding the situation was really bizarre. I have never had the courage to come out to my extended family (cousins, relatives, uncles and aunts) because I hail from a closely-knit, conservative, Catholic family. It was embarrassing to answer inquisitive questions from an aunt who remembered the girlfriends that I had when I was a teenager. I was surprised at how sensitively and positively the media reported my story and my journey through the Mr. Gay India 2013 pageant, painting the LGBT movement in a very graceful light. I realised the power of the press as soon as my first interview was published. My phone kept buzzing through the day, and my email inbox and social networking pages were flooded with messages and questions. I feel blessed to be born as a gay man and I’m not bogged down by the challenges that accompany it.” — Nolan Lewis (30-years-old), Mr. Gay World 2013 contestant
“Taking it slow and steady was hard”
“My biggest hurdle was that as soon as I realised that I was different, I resisted it. I was living a dual life; I pretended to be someone that I was not. But, with time, I took a good inward look and asked myself if the lie I was living was worth it. I decided to open up to my friends and luckily, the first friend that I confided
in was extremely understanding. I’m still under a lot of pressure — I haven’t told my parents yet because I think they will not take it well. But I do plan to tell them and I will cross that bridge when the time is right.” — Pankaj (22-years-old), media professional
EXPERT OPInIOn
“These days, children hit puberty at an early age and for boys, it’s often a lot more obvious. For Indian parents, it’s shocking to hear that their child is bisexual or gay. This is mostly because there are certain norms that society has conditioned us to follow. So, people think that being differently-oriented is wrong. It’s very important for parents to be open with their children, because children are young and impressionable. In our country, it is taboo to talk about gender equality, let alone sexuality. However, since parents spend a lot of time talking to their child about other things, they should also talk about sexuality with an open mind! You should help your children understand what sexuality exactly means. If you don’t believe in talking about it, that’s fine, but at the very least, you shouldn’t say things against it. This will make your child nervous and scared of opening up to you. Don’t condemn anything!” — Kinjal Pandya, relationship counsellor

>> Rajashree rediscovered her love for arts and craft and today holds workshops and training sessions
had to pursue a career that would help me balance both my family and my passion. Conducting a summer camp for my friends, children and acquaintances gave me the necessary opportunity. The feather in my cap was the association with Fevicryl-Pidilite Industries; had it not been for their professional training, timely exposure and numerous opportunities, I would not have been able to optimise my potential. They have played an important role in my growth. n What challenges do you face when it comes to turning
PASSIONATE ABOUT ART With family and professional relationships taking up most of our time, pursuing our passions seems impossible. But, Rajashree Nedungadi turned hers into a career with the help of Pidilite Fevicryl’s training programme for housewives. Dev Goswami speaks to her to find out more
L
earning a musical instrument, taking up a dance class... how many things do you have chalked out on the list of skills that you would like to acquire, but never have the time to learn? As you grow older, you begin to take on more responsibility, family and career eating away at personal time. And then somewhere along the way, you find yourself so caught up, that most of your hobbies are sidelined without you even noticing. This holds true for housewives like Rajashree Nedungadi, who after getting a master’s degree in economics and getting married, said goodbye to her childhood passion for art and craft. But, she’s also one of the lucky few who managed to rediscover her passion and unleash her potential. After associating herself with Pidilite Fevicryl’s training programme for housewives, she transformed her hobby into a career. She has authored a book on the Rajasthani art form of Pichwai paintings, undertakes vocational training programmes for the underprivileged and also holds corporate art therapy sessions. Read on as we find out more about Rajashree and her passion for the art and craft.
n After pursuing a master’s degree in economics and
getting married at an early age, you successfully moved back to your childhood passion for art and craft. What helped you make this switch? Being married to someone who travels a lot and having two small children to take care of made me realise that I
your hobby into a career? How do you ensure that your love for what you do is not overshadowed by the need to run a successful business? Sharing my hobby with other people made me realise the importance of constantly staying updated and also made me aware of the huge financial investment that is required to run a business. As long as my hobby is selfsustaining, it ensures a balance between passion and commercialism. n Once upon a time, people believed that with the rise of
the internet, hobbies such as art and craft would die. However, we’re seeing quite the opposite of that. How do you use this to your advantage? I believe in the idea that, if it’s not on the internet, it doesn’t exist. So, being aware of my clients and ensuring that both my work and I am accessible to them is quite important. Instant connectivity gives instant accessibility and facilitates conversion. n What is your favourite art form?
I’m passionate about all traditional art forms. My favourite is the Kerala Mural. It’s an art form that is bright, traditional, vastu-friendly and based on pictorial interpretations of the shlokas from the Bhagvad Gita. n What is the one type or aspect of art and craft that you
feel is often ignored? Most Indians are not aware of the number of art forms that exist in our country. A lot of these are not as popular and don’t get their due. n What tips would you give women who want to pursue
their hobbies like you have? Quality, and not quantity brings in footfall. Professionalism, variety, accessibility, good pricing and in-depth knowledge of your subject is essential for success. But, remember that success is what you define it to be.
About Pidilite Fevicryl’s ProgrAmme Pidilite has a training programme that enables women to teach hobbies. They offer you training, along with a certificate on successful completion. As a hobby teacher from Fevicryl, you will get to conduct several workshops and other activities
that are related to art. It is open to all women, whether they are housewives or those looking to pursue their enthusiasm for art and craft. To find out more and to get in touch with them you can send an email to contactus@hobbyideas.in.

the Rainbow
fixation Now that we’ve touched upon a sensitive issue on pages 13 & 14, it’s time to have a little fun with the rainbow trend. You can include all seven colours in your makeup, accessories and apparel! Don’t know where to start? Yamini Walia & Katha Nauriyal bring you a few of their favourites
W
ith rich, vibrant hues doing the rounds this monsoon, you sure can forecast a rainbow! Banish your blacks and greys and keep an eye out for tropical candy colours, because the rainbow trend has just set in. “Moving past subtle pastel summer shades, we’re now seeing a lot of rainbow hues in trend. Using natural colours and techniques such as ombre-dyeing, artisans and designers are experimenting with a wider colour palette borrowed from nature’s hues,” says Shilpa Sharma, co-founder of
Jaypore.com. But, it’s not just apparel that is colour-brushed this season, you can now don an array of eccentric accessories for chic, multicolour minimalism. Jewellery designer Renu Oberoi tells us, “The right kind of accessories matched with the right clothing always work; but using accessories to infuse a touch of colour is always recommended. This not only gives you a stylish look, but also helps you experiment.” So, give your regular tones a break and soak in some avantgarde colours!
Pink may be taking adult fashion trends by storm, but bubblegum pink is still a point of contention. If you want to rock this pretty shade without looking like an overgrown tween, these tips will help, says Dev Goswami
Don’t try to match Matching your makeup and accessories to your outfit is the biggest mistake you can make with bubblegum pink. Sure, yellow nail polish looks great with a yellow tube top, but with a shade like bubblegum, you will look like a child! A knee-length bubblegum pink skirt with neutral makeup and accessories is a good option. Just a dash Not sure if you will be able to pull off bubblegum pink? Start small! Pick a handbag or a pair of shoes in this shade and keep the rest of your outfit subtle. This adds just the right amount of colour and will make you look attractive. Another safe bet is to sport bubblegum pink nail polish with a neutral outfit. Say no to bubblegum lips While bubblegum nail paint is a great way to add a dash of colour to your look, we don’t recommend picking lipstick in the same shade. It isn’t because it will look bad, but

I’m not usually a fan of lip gloss, having gotten over the shiny lips trend somewhere in the early 2000s like the rest of the ’90s kids. The reason I don’t usually like using gloss is because it leaves a sticky film on your lips, is very hard to keep off your teeth and feels pretty uncomfortable through the day. This is where Colobar manages to raise the bar. The gloss has a thin film, and is very light, so you can apply it over your regular lipstick for a mirror effect. Both the peach and pink shades I tried were softly hued, the pink more suited to a night out and the peach more favourable for a day look. The best part though, is that they don’t leave a sticky, clingy film on your lips. In fact, you hardly feel them through the day, and I had to keep checking that it was still on! It will not last as long as regular lipstick, so you do have to keep applying it though, and it gets over very quickly, so it’s not really value for money. But, it smells great, looks great and feels good — so it’s a winner in my books! Rating *** Price `675 Where www.colorbarcosmetics.com
because pulling it off can be quite a task. Several factors come into play here — your skin tone, your makeup, the colour of your outfit and even your earrings! Ensuring the right balance will be a little difficult, so it’s best to avoid this. Pick a sweater If there’s one item of clothing that looks great in a bubblegum shade, it’s a cardigan! Mumbai may not be chilly enough to warrant a sweater, but a light cardigan will serve as a good addition to your wardrobe. Keep it casual by pulling up your sleeves and pairing it with light denims. Remember to avoid wearing extremely dark shades as they will not go well with bubblegum pink. Dress up your phone If you want to play it safe, the best thing to do is pick accessories for your phone or tablet in a bubblegum pink shade. From phone covers to tablet cases, electronic accessories will add colour without making you look like a piece of candy floss!

Dove oxygen MoiStURe
The Dove Oxygen Moisture range reached at an apt time. My hair was dealing with the weather changes, and not in a good way! While most of Dove’s products suit me very well, I was still surprised by how good this was! It did make my hair look shinier, fuller — and the delicious scent is an added bonus. The oxygen technology seems to work well to hydrate hair, but the one grouse I had with it was that it gets oily a little too quickly (on the second day after a wash) - so it may have too much moisture for my hair. For those with very dry hair, this will work wonders. Rating **** Price `83 (80ml shampoo) and `91 (80ml conditioner) Where Major retail outlets across the city

We’re fans of Pernia as well as of her designs, and we all can agree that she looks absolutely divine in this outfit. The dress looks perfect on her and we absolutely adore those gorgeous chandelier jhumkas. Her makeup is simple and subtle, and that swipe of coral on her lips is making her skin glow.
With almost perfect features and a curvaceous body, we’d say that Sunny is one of the prettiest actresses in Bollywood today. But, we don’t think we can say much about her outfit. We do love her peachy pink makeup and shiny, tousled curls, but that outfit looks like something a young girl would wear to the prom.

We usually adore Aditi’s sense of style, but this ensemble makes us wonder what went wrong. We love the red jumpsuit, but it doesn’t look great on her. The matching red shoes aren’t working either. Her well-done makeup is the only saving grace in this ensemble.

Once a reigning style diva, Bipasha was known for her risqué, yet chic fashion choices. And we would consider those layered necklaces risqué, but only because they look downright tacky and out of place on this outfit. In fact, the dress looks just as terrible on her as that necklace, and does nothing to flatter her fabulous figure.
Usually impeccably dressed, this time around, Shraddha’s outfit looks a bit out of place. There isn’t much going for her — perhaps some smokey eye shadow and a beautiful, delicate bracelet may have saved the style. With this look, she’s managed to make a pretty sexy outfit look extremely plain.

GoSSiPinG co-Worker My co-worker constantly involves me in her gossip. Sometimes, it’s about what she has learned during the course of her work, while at other times, it’s about what she has heard from others at work. Not only do I dislike such gossip, I detest getting involved in other people’s lives. I’m afraid this may hurt my relationship with my other co-workers as well. What should I do? — Ananya Parekh, Borivali Dear Ananya, Gossiping makes you feel closer to others and most people find it hard to resist. However, your intuition is correct. Engaging in office gossip will definitely not win you any fans. It will make your co-workers lose trust in you in the long run. And, if your bosses share the same lack of trust, you’re less likely to get a promotion or be chosen for important tasks. Since you don’t care about the talk, you’re somewhat shielded when it comes to gossiping. The next time your co-worker tries to bring up a conversation rife with gossip, say something like, “Who cares about that?” or just change the topic and ask what’s new with her. That way you can still be close without being part of any silly gossip. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday
Bullies at work! If you thought bullying was limited to school and college, think again! You may be getting bullied at work without even realising it. Yamini Walia helps you identify the signs
I
f you enjoy your work but not your work environment, chances are that it’s because you’re being bullied. And, you’re not being bullied because you’re softspoken or because you try to be better than others. It’s mostly because your colleagues or your seniors simply like exhibiting their dominance over others. If you’re being bullied, here are a few signs that you should look out for.
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015 documents. They basically find ways to ensure that you fail at your job and make it look like a routine, honest mistake!
constant humiliation If your seniors constantly scream at you or humiliate and insult you in front of others for no apparent reason, you’re dealing with a bully in your office. Yelling is one of the most common bullying tactics employed in work environments. But, don’t just sit there quietly! Stand up for yourself and take some much-needed remedial measures.
change in schedules This is the most common sign of bullying — a last-minute change in your schedule amuses most office bullies. Say, you have to pick up your parents from the airport. But, suddenly, the office bully schedules a meeting, despite knowing about your prior engagement. If this happens to you regularly, it’s pretty evident that you’re being bullied.
>> It’s imperative that you take quick action against office bullies to maintain a healthy work culture
Unwanted criticism You completed your assignment before your deadline and did it to the best of your ability — so you know it’s up to the mark! But, your boss still points out mistakes that are not even valid. In fact, your seniors always criticise your work. If this happens to you on a regular basis, you’re definitely being bullied.
random rumours Some girls in your office just like spreading rumours — which usually include destructive gossip about you. And of course, this manages to reach your boss and your impression is ruined. This is a very evident sign of bullying. Steer clear of such colleagues and take it up with the HR, if necessary!
lack of coordination
Bringing up the past
Most office bullies like to sabotage other people’s work. And by sabotage, we mean, dumping work on you at the last minute or failing to finish their part of the assignment. All this is done to jeopardize your work or not let you perform crucial tasks such as taking important calls or signing important
‘Remember, how you ruined that project we worked on two years ago?’ — if your boss is constantly saying things like this to you, you need to look out for yourself. Bullies will always keep an account of your mistakes and will constantly bring them up. Remember, this is not constructive criticism in any way !

Wearing an all-white outfit is one thing, but whitewashing your entire room and then adding in white furniture is even riskier! However, when it’s done right, it can look super chic, says Sara Shah
P
icture a white room, with light streaming in through large windows and furniture that makes you feel like you’re in a tub of cream! It may sound like a pristine dream, but striking a balance between all the elements in an all -white room is tougher than you think. One wrong step and it can end up looking like a hospital ward. But, when it’s designed correctly, an all-white room can evoke a sense of peace, clarity and comfort. According to interior designer Ayushi Kanodia, all-white décor not only provides a calming and refreshing tone, it is also versatile and sophisticated. She suggests using white to draw attention to the curves, edges and shapes in your home, which make your space seem larger. “White acts as a blank canvas that can be moulded any way you want. And, it leaves you with a lot of room to experiment with your furniture! If you want to add a bit of autumn, you can pick rustic toned pillow covers and carpets for a break in the white, or to bring in a dash of colour. White décor also helps to bring the focus to one colour or a particular object,” she tells us.
>> All-white décor is a smart, chic choice, only if you get it right!
How to get it right To achieve the right balance, Ayushi suggests adding hints of colour to your room. “It breaks the monotony of white and provides contours that prevent this type of décor from looking flat. Accent pieces, picture frames, light fixtures and different patterns give your eyes a place to rest as well,” she says. She also suggests using mirrors, glass and crystal accessories, which go well with all-white décor. They not only provide depth and shape to the room, but also allow light to reflect and create patterns. In your bedroom, you can do this with linen. She tells us, “Having pillow covers, artwork and curtains can lift up your all-white décor as well. All-white interiors are trendy and there is no reason to be intimidated by the concept. Instead, you can look at this as a fresh start and a canvas for you to paint on!”
What to you keep in mind
n Cook with white Creamy whites are a very popular kitchen shade, as they go well with wooden cabinets. “A white kitchen goes well with traditional wooden cabinets. You can pick carrera marble counters and a
modern white lacquer finish, or design a minimal kitchen with waterfall-edge counter tops. White kitchens feel clean and classy and so, are a decorator’s favourite,” Ayushi says. n Pair it with metal Combining white with different types of metals is a growing trend. “Pairing neutral colours such as white with classic metal combinations (gold, bronze, silver or stainless steel) exudes elegance. It feels inviting and is easy on the eyes. This pairing can be done with stainless steel or by using brass light fixtures in the house, especially in your living area,” says Ayushi. n Speak through art Art pieces, sculptures and design elements stand out in all-white décor. They break the flow and demand attention. n Layer it up If your room feels monotonous, you can add depth by using different shades of white, one over the other. “Layer white with colours such as beige, cream,
grey and warm grey to add depth to your all-white interiors. Another way to create a sense of depth is through patterns and textures in shades of white,” Ayushi tells us.
Things to avoid
n Maintain Neutrality “One of the mistakes that we often make is pairing too many colours with our whites. This could be an eye sore since the purpose of using white in is to provide a clean, smart place,” Ayushi explains. She suggests choosing furniture in neutral colours such as beige, cream, black and grey, instead of filling your room with different colours. n Flow is crucial Maintaining the flow is the key to achieving the perfect all-white look. “If your living room is done in all-white, your bedrooms should also have elements of the same concept. If this is not done, the flow would break and your rooms will look like two disconnected parts of the same house,” Ayushi explains.

I have a very annoying problem and I need some tips on how to deal with it once and for all. You see I go to college with my two best friends from school. We were the most popular girls in school... It doesn't bother me that we are still relatively unknown in our college (for now). We are freshmen and know it takes time to make a name for yourself among so, so many more kids than before... BUT!
Your guide to dating a
single dad
Then there is Priya... or should I say...
Dating a single dad has its own benefits. But, it can also be a lot of hard work. Pooja Salvi tells you how you can make it worth it
W
ith divorces becoming more commonplace, your chances of coming across a single dad in the dating pool are quite high. Dating a single dad comes with several challenges, but don’t be too quick to dismiss the thought of diving right into a relationship if you have the hots for one. Following these tips will ensure a happy, fruitful relationship.
He will take things slow And, can you blame him? After all, with his children, the man has enough on his plate. He isn’t spending his free evenings lying on the couch or swiping left-right on Tinder. Instead, he is busy spending time with his children. He knows what love is and he understands how important love and affection is. So, you will have to be patient.
He is playing for keeps If you think that you’re the only thing on his mind during a date, you’re wrong. Don’t expect his undivided attention, especially if he’s just getting back into the dating game. A single dad will have his children on his mind whenever he is away from them — especially if they’re young! And, if you’ve
been dating a single dad for a while, he will want both his worlds to eventually meet. So, be prepared to meet his children.
They talk and they listen Gone are the days when the men you dated ran away from questions like “what are we?” or “are we really ready to move in?” A single dad will not only listen to your questions, he will also have definite answers for them. After all, he knows how important time is and is in no mood to waste any.
Most of his time is devoted to his children And you need to respect this. His children are a big part of his universe and he wants to keep it that way. He doesn’t want to ignore their needs just so that he can spend time with you. This doesn’t mean that you aren’t important to him, but that his children are his top priority.
He gives you the opportunity to participate in their lives And that is huge! A single dad isn’t going to bring you home if he suspects that you’re
going to disappear after the first meeting with his children. Once you meet them, you’re in it for the long haul. In fact, you should be honoured that he thinks highly enough of you to let you meet them. Also, remember that eventually, it’s up to you to decide whether the decision to date a single dad is the right one for you or not. As long as you’re okay with the fact that you’re not the centre of his attention, there’s no reason you can’t date a single father!
EXPERT ADVICE Kinjal Pandya, a relationship counsellor, tells us, “Understanding that a single dad is a wounded person and will not be as enthusiastic as other men you may meet, is important. He doesn’t need a flamboyant partner as much as he needs someone who understands him thoroughly. A certain comparison to his ex-wife is inevitable, so be prepared. Apart from that, remember that dating a single dad is only a good idea if you can be tolerant and are okay with the shared attention.”
« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear Grace, I am in my early twenties and have never been in a relationship. Most of my friends have had their first breakups by now, but I have never even been on a date! But, I see all my friends talking about their relationships and it makes me feel as though something is missing in my life. I’ve started to realise that by not having a teenage affair, I skipped an important part

Take your career seriously, spend time with your family and have a blast with your friends. Don’t get into a relationship because you feel left out. If you take relationships seriously, then wait to fall in love (spoiler: it’s worth it).
"Then she gave us a speech on 'gossiping'! So loud everyone could hear! Huh?! I was outraged and Pams actually apologized! TO HER! How do I tell her she is no one to assume things about me and my pals without everyone thinking I am a ***** because she is a SAINT!" Shaz a) Could it be that Priya is actually quite nice and that is the reason that people like her? And don't you agree that Ginny would be hurt to hear her two best friends making fun of her behind her back? And did you two discussing Ginny solve anything or just make you feel superior? b) Right! No one should assume anything about anyone. Not even you. c) Just ignore her. She has no right to butt in and correct your behavior if its not affecting her. It would only be Ginny who'd feel hurt if she heard. Anyway, you'll are there to learn not win popularity contests! Debutant Ishita Dutta gets kudos from Ajay Devgn By Sandeep Hattangadi
B
ollywood has a new name to reckon with and it's none other than the talented and vivacious Ishita Dutta. Ishita’s debut film ''Drishyam'' has some of the industry’s biggest names with the likes of Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Shriya Saran in the leading roles. The young actress plays the part of Ajay’s and Shriya’s 8-year-old daughter. Ishita has already got one Telugu film and a Kannada film; ''Chanakyudu'' and ''Raja Rajendra'' firmly in her belt, she is now ready to make her mark in the Hindi film industry. Ishita was picked up for her role in just two days after she gave her audition. Ishita considers herself to be quite fortunate to have got the opportunity to work with the National Award winners Ajay Devgn and Tabu, acknowledging that she has learnt a lot while working with them. Ishita is eagerly awaiting the release of her maiden project and is confident that good assignments will soon follow once the film hits the screen. Ishita is from Jamshedpur and moved to Mumbai to study media and then went on to pursue acting by going to Anupam Kher Acting School. She also happens to be the sister of Femina Miss India Universe winner and popular actress Tanushree Dutta who is very encouraging about Ishita’s career. Ishita has impressed actor Ajay Devgn with her talent as when he was asked about Ishita he said that she is quite talented and focused. Such words coming from a veteran actor like him for a beginner like her is very motivational and a great boost for her career. Another star on the horizon!

Radhika was last seen in Sriram Raghavan's ''Badlapur'' and will be next seen in ''Bombairiya''.

M
egastar Amitabh Bachchan has revealed he and his "Sholay" co-star Amjad Khan had a great friendship that withstood difficult times. Bachchan, 72, who launched the book written by Amjad's son Shadaab, said he recollected the memories of his first meeting with the late actor on the sets of the 1975 blockbuster. "... A journey filled with happiness and joy and togetherness and trying times and difficult times. But the intensity of our friendship always remained.
"We spent some anxious times at various stages of our friendship... His accident, my accident and then his sudden passing away but there was a bond that remained unspoken
between us and still does...," he wrote on his blog. Amjad, who had a near-fatal accident on the Mumbai-Goa road in 1986, died six years later due to heart failure. Besides "Sholay", the actors shared screen space in "Ahsaas", "Suhaag", "Mr Natwarlal", "Laawaris" among others. The "Piku" star is all excited about his son Abhishek Bachchan's team's opening game in the second edition of the Pro Kabaddi League, where Big B will also make an appearance.
Would love to work with a talented actor like Kareena: Fawad P
akistani actor Fawad Khan says he would definitely like to do a film with Kareena Kapoor Khan. Recently, a picture of Fawad and Kareena went viral, giving rise to speculation that they are working in a film together. "We happened to shoot in the same studio where she was present for 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and I was shooting for Giovani. "As far as the question of working with her goes, I would love to work with a talented actor like her if I get an opportunity. I have a great deal of respect for these artistes," Fawad told reporters here at an event. Fawad made his Bollywood debut with "Khoobsurat" and is now working on "Kapoor and Sons" directed by Shakun Batra. Says it reminds him of the many James Bond movies he would have seen over the time, 'where the devil really is a master of technology' By A Business Reporter
A
ce banker Uday Kotak has flagged concerns over privacy and security of the consumer across various sectors in the fast-growing digital world. "As we go down this path of very quick adoption of digital technologies particularly from a consumer point of view, what is going to happen to privacy ?" he noted at an event in Mumbai recently. He was speaking at the launch of McKinsey Global Institute's book 'No Ordinary Disruption', which deals with four big changes that are sweeping the world, including rise of emerging markets, accelerating impact of technology on the natural forces of market competition, an ageing world population, and accel-
erating flows of trade capital and people. Kotak also expressed concerns about job creation in a digital world which is driven by technology disruptions. Thinking about the consumer particularly in the business of risk and trust, two extremely important points of the disruption are privacy and security, Kotak said, adding, every time a consumer uses a popular map application, there is someone who has access to key data like where we are, what we are doing and life patterns of consumers. "We are assuming it is safe because people out there will not misuse it. The whole issue of privacy and trust and security around the consumer is an important part of this." Kotak, the executive vice chairman and managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, compared the situation to James Bond movies. "It reminds me of the many James Bond movies we would have seen over the time, where the devil really is a master of technology," he said. Kotak hinted that the onslaught of
digital disruptions is also challenging the way banking is done. "As a banker, when I sleep at night, I worry about whether I'll have a bank next morning, will there be an Ali Bank or a Flipkart bank or some other bank doing business what we do," he quipped. He also wondered about the business models of emerging internet companies like WhatsApp, saying he is yet to understand it and may be in the future such companies will make money. "In telecom, SMS is dead and there is Whatsapp. But I can't figure out what is the business model of WhatsApp," he said, adding that companies like it and others like Facebook and Twitter are first creating the user base to make money later. "This long tail model has a phenomenal theory which has three parts --- keep on getting user, get them to use more and only after that think about making money. That is the Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp model," he said, acknowledging that it's difficult for traditional businesses to comprehend this.

A
NITI Aayog sub-group headed by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is "exploring" a legislation on the Right to Skill in order to create a pool of skilled manpower in the country. "As far as legislation to provide the Right to Skill is concerned, unless and until there's consensus among states, this legislation cannot be done... I think Badal who is heading a subcommittee of the NITI Aayog will consider this as well," Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy told PTI. The committee has been tasked with addressing human resources issues, especially youth, and work-
ing on scientific methods for skilled manpower. The chief ministers are expected to recommend measures to the NITI Aayog on how to deal with shortage of skilled manpower in production lines and also expand outreach of skill programmes, particularly in demographically advantageous states. Rudy was in Delhi to flag off 150 Skill Vans to create awareness among masses about the government's initiatives and policies on skill development. Says this is an opportunity to encourage and support young start-ups which are in new space such as e-commerce and eretail, which in his view is going to change the face of Indian merchandising and marketing business By A Business Reporter
P
romising start-ups in e-commerce and e-retail space are the ones that will change the face of Indian merchandising and marketing business, Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata said yesterday. "For the last three years, I have been a free person (by not being in command of the Tata Group). If I look at the landscape, I see the future in young managers, the young start-ups. It is what I saw in United States in the 70s and 80s," he said, while interacting with students of the Great Lakes Institute of Management at its 11th convocation in Chennai. "The ability to think out of the box has made the United States change its appearance from smoke-stacked companies to innovative companies that we see around us today such as Apple, Facebook, etc," Tata said. Incidentally, in the past few months, Tata has invested in close to 10 companies, mostly in the e-commerce space, including Snapdeal and Chinese handset maker Xiaomi, reports PTI. Elaborating on his interest on investing in start-ups, Tata said: "This is an opportunity to encourage and support young start-ups which are in new space such as ecommerce and e-retail, which in my view is going to change the face
of Indian merchandising and marketing business. "So, in a small token way, because I am not a very wealthy person I have invested myself in some 10 companies hoping that some of them will succeed. I think it ecommerce companies have great potential." Asked how important was it to "nurture" the startups, he said: "I have hardly been involved in the angel funding of any start-ups. It was always after they have established themselves to certain extent. "So it is important to nurture them, it is important to support them. The creative ones are the ones that usually have the problems in getting the support. Because no one has done that before and those need to be nurtured. The promising ones." On his latest investment in Coimbatore based start-up firm Ampere Vehicles, he said, "I invested there because I was impressed by the management which had hands on experience. "It (electric vehicle space) is an area that is left untouched. It (the company) deserved little bit of support. I never met her (Ampere Vehicles CEO Hemalatha Annamalai)before. Never knew the company before. But when she asked for help, I decided to invest", he said. To a query, Tata said most investments made by him in startup companies were in the "e-commerce" space and added that the "health" sector was looking more "promising". On how many start-ups he was going to invest in future, he said, he would, "as long as they are attractive".

India has the potential to provide a workforce of about 4-5 crore to the world if the capabilities of the countrymen are honed through proper and dynamic skill training, he said, adding the government is focussed on this aspect. Noting that the world and technology is changing fast, he said, "We need to have futuristic vision and prepare plans for the next 10 years" and advocated the need for regular interaction between industry and technology experts. "If China is recognised as a 'manufacturing factory' of the world,

PM meet on land bill boycotted by Congress, other CMs N
EW DELHI: The battle over the land bill continued with over a dozen Chief Ministers belonging to Congress and other major parties on Wednesday boycotting a meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who regretted that the deadlock was seriously impacting rural development. Nine chief ministers of Congress-ruled states besides those of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha kept away from the meeting of NITI Aayog's Governing Council chaired by Modi expressing their opposition to proposed changes being brought by the government in the land acquisition bill in the coming session of Parliament. They opposed 'dilution' of the provisions of the original act of 2013 in regard to consent of farmers and exemption from social impact assessment. Even BJP ally and Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal had a word of caution that no land should be acquired without the consent of farmers and land owners and that social impact assessment should apply to all
PM Narendra Modi acquisitions. Notable absentees from the meeting were West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu's J Jayalalithaa, Odisha's Naveen Patnaik and Uttar Pradesh's Akhilesh Yadav. Among those who attended the meeting were Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Tripura's Manik Sarkar and the Chief Ministers of BJPruled states. And the two non-BJP Chief Ministers – Nitish Kumar of Bihar and Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, who attended the meeting, opposed changes bill, which are currently being scrutinised by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.

peared in the court in December 2014 in the case. Bajpai said that he had received threats over the phone before he appeared in the court in the case to provide evidence. He said that he had requested to Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police to provide him with security at the time, but was denied. But after Kripal Singh, another key witness in the case, was shot at on July 10 and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Bareilly, he has been provided security. Mr Singh in his statement in the case against Asaram, recorded about three months ago, had alleged that people connected to the godman were threatening him for the last few days.
EIJING/LOND: An Indian was among 20 foreigners arrested in northern China for alleged terror links as an excursion by the group associated with a religiously inspired African charity founded by an Indian-origin man went "horribly wrong". The reason behind their arrest remains unclear but the tourists, including nine Britons and one Indian, detained at Ordos airport in Inner Mongolia on July 10 were linked to the South Africa-based charity, Gift of the Givers, founded by Indian-origin Imtiaz Sooliman. "This was supposed to be a tour to explore ancient China; a planned 47-day journey for ten South Africans, nine Britons and one Indian national. A tour that went horribly wrong on Friday, 10 July, when they were arrested at Erdos Airport, Inner Mongolia, at
9.40 am local time," the charity group Gift of the Givers said. According to the group, the tour operator realised something was wrong on Sunday, 48 hours after the arrests, and discovered that the holidaymakers had been detained after travelling to the airport. The Chinese suggested that some members were linked to a terror group, a banned organisation, and watching propaganda videos in their hotel room, the charity said. The Indian Embassy in Beijing on Wednesday sought counsellor access to the Indian national who was detained along with 20 other foreign tourists. "We are in touch with Chinese officials in Beijing and Inner Mongolia, where he was taken into custody and sought counsellor action to meet the person," an embassy official told PTI.
The official said the mission is aware of the identity of the detained Indian but declined to disclose details. The embassy contacted the relevant Chinese officials following reports of the detention of the 20 foreigners in the first such case in China, which is battling growing militancy in Xinjiang, bordering Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan. The Gift of the Givers charity, in a statement yesterday said, "Following an intervention by both the South African and British governments in China yesterday there has been some movement regarding 11 of the 20 detained individuals. Representatives of the three governments met in Erdos, Inner Mongolia, where protracted discussions took place but no formal charges were put to any of the 20 detainees." Pics: PTI

CBI lodges 3 FIRs, Cong-BJP spar Continued from pg 1 « Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister," they said. Besides Chouhan, the Congress leaders also demanded the resignation of Pradhan, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister. Pradhan, whose travel tickets were alleged to have been booked by Sharma, said he knew the Vyapam accused as he was an ABVP activist but insisted it was the BJP office which bought tickets for him when he travelled for party work. "Not at all. No question," he said when asked if his tickets had been booked by Sharma. BJP secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said the Madhya Pradesh High Court-appointed SIT had probed these charges and given "clean chits". "Now the CBI is looking into it. Let them investigate," he said. Jha, a Rajya Sabha MP, too denied the allegations, saying since he was entitled to air travel, the bill for which was footed by the House, there was no need for others to but tickets for him. CBI sources said the three FIRs have been registered in
connection with Pre-Medical Tests for 2009, 2010 and Pre-PG Examination of 2011. The cases have been lodged under various sections of Indian Penal Code pertaining to cheating and forgery. The CBI has named 21 candidates in the FIR in connection with PMT Test 2010, eight in the second case related to Pre-PG examination of 2011 which includes Gulab Singh Kirar, a member of the MP Backward Classes and Minorities Commission and his son Shakti Singh Kirar. Others named include Former Controllers of Examination, Vyapam, Sudhir Bhadauria and Pankaj Trivedi. As the Supreme Court while handing over the investigation of Vyapam scam to CBI had also asked it to probe the deaths of people linked to it, the agency also called for records from the Superintendents of Police of Ujjain, Kanker, Gwalior, Jhabua and DIG, Indore, records of "mysterious" deaths of five people. The Congress has alleged at least 49 people associated with the scandal have so far died under "mysterious" circumstances.

TO RETAIN EIGHT-TEAM IPL
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015
The Rajasthan Royals [above] team was suspended along with Chennai Super Kings for a period of two years.
N
ew Delhi: Stung by the suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL, the BCCI's top officials are now working out a contingency plan to ensure that the high-profile league remains an eight-team affair. The officials have already started informal discussion on the way forward before the IPL Governing Council meets for an emergency session in Mumbai on Sunday. IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla is scheduled to meet BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya late Wednesday and today morning in Kolkata to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R M Lodha committee verdict. The BCCI is keen to ensure
The BCCI can run the two teams for two years and the original owners can come back after the ban period is over. The other option is to invite fresh bids for two new teams since many corporates have expressed an interest in buying an IPL team.
A BCCI OFFICIAL
that the cash-rich league remains an eight-team tournament as its contract with the broadcasters -- Multi Screen Media -- envisages a 60match schedule. "We have started discussions on the way forward. We have studied the Justice Lodha committee report, the Governing Council will discuss all aspects of this verdict and decide the future course of action," a top BCCI official told PTI. The official said that the
IPL has not affected CLT20: Sunil Gavaskar N
e w De l h i : Defending IPL, former I n d i a n cricket captain S u n i l Gavaskar rubbished talks of the cash-rich Indian Premier League being the reason behind the scrapping of Champions League T20. The suspension of IPL sides Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals and the scrapping of CLT20 happened in a span of 24 hours. "There is no connection. I think completely different, the Champions League has four teams from the Indian Premier League, three teams get direct entry, the fourth
team has to play the qualifier and there are two teams from Australia, two from South Africa, so I don't think anything to do with the IPL would have had an effect on the championship," Gavaskar, who had once served as BCCI's interim chief, told 'NDTV'. The dipping popularity of CLT20, an event comprising top IPL sides and various T20 winners from across the globe and which began in 2009, is the reason behind its scrapping. Gavaskar though is unable to explain the reason behind the shut down of what he thought was a fantastic tournament. "It was pretty much like the T20 leagues all over the world, which are very popular, he added.
Board could possibly explore two options to ensure that the IPL remains an eightteam event. "The BCCI can run the two teams for two years and the original owners can come back after the ban period is over. The other option is to invite fresh bids for two new teams since many corporates have expressed an interest in buying an IPL team," he said. The problem that BCCI might face if it invites bids for two new teams is that it
could increase the number of teams to 10 after CSK and RR complete their ban period. Drawing up a home and away basis schedule for 10 teams could drag the league well beyond its stipulated window of about six weeks. There are few members of the BCCI who are keen to invite fresh bids since it will generate more money for the league. BCCI running two teams may not be economically viable since the entire cost of managing the team and playing the players their salaries will have to be borne by the Board. In case the BCCI invites bids for two new teams, all the players of CSK and RR will go back to the auction pool. Star players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Steve Smith, James Faulkner, Ravindra Jadeja, Brendon McCullum, Mike Hussey and Ashish Nehra will then be up for grabs again. A fresh auction was supposed to be held before the 2017 IPL but current situation may drive the BCCI to have one before the scheduled time. The storm was triggered by the suspension of CSK and RR and their top officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra. Meiyappan, a former Team Principal of India Cements Ltd (ICL)-owned franchise CSK and Kundra, co-owner of Jaipur IPL that runs Rajasthan Royals (RR), were suspended for life from any matches conducted by BCCI.

Champions League T20 scrapped with immediate effect N
ew Delhi: Just a day after Supreme Court appointed Justice Lodha Committee gave a stinging verdict suspending IPL teams CSK and Rajasthan Royals for two years, cricket authorities yesterday decided to scrap the Champions League T20 tournament with immediate effect. "The Governing Council of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) has today confirmed that the CLT20 competition will be discontinued with immediate effect. The Governing Council of the CLT20, comprising representatives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) made the decision unanimously," a media release said. "As such the 2015 CLT20 scheduled for September and October will not go ahead as planned," said the release. While the scrapping of the CLT20 was always on cards due to the poor response it generated, the Lodha Committee report was like a last straw for the CLT20 Governing Council after Chennai Super Kings, who are defending champions as well
as one of the competitors after finishing runners-up were suspended for two years. "The competition was launched in 2009 by the BCCI with CA and CSA. The Governing Council determined that the discontinuation of the league was the most appropriate decision due to the tournament's limited public following." BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said, "This has been a difficult decision as the Champions League T20 provided added context to a number of domestic Twenty 20 competitions around the world such as the IPL in India, Big Bash League in Australia and South Africa's Ram Slam T20." "It was a fantastic platform for players from around the world to showcase their talent and the participating teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience over the last six seasons.""Unfortunately, off the field, Champions League T20 wasn't sustaining the interest of the fans as we had hoped. This decision was made, after consultation with all our commercial partners.
I have been wronged, says Kundra N
ew Delhi: Suspended for life from taking part in any form of cricketing activity by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha Committee, Rajasthan Royals' former co-owner Raj Kundra said "I have been wronged". The Lodha panel, in a landmark decision yesterday, suspended Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two years in the 2013 spot fixing and betting scandal. "Today is a very depressing and sad day for me as my integrity has been questioned and my support in this investigation seems to have backfired," Kundra said in a statement. Former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of ICC Chair-
for the Hon'ble Supreme Court and the judicial system, unfortunately in this case I cannot but feel that I have been wronged. I would request that they share the evidence that they have against me, so that I can at least have knowledge of the basis on which they have destroyed my hard-earned reputation. I have anyway washed my hands of cricket in India," he said. "I have always assisted and helped the Mudgal committee from day one till now. It's disheartening that despite there being no evidence whatsoever against me, I was man N Srinivasan, and Kun- still deemed to be guilty. I dra, both of whom were ear- have not received till date a lier found guilty of betting, copy of their final report in were suspended for life from which sweeping conclusions any cricketing activity under- were recorded against me." taken by the BCCI. The Justice Mudgal Com"While I have great respect mittee was a three-member
panel, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal, which was appointed by the apex court to conduct an independent inquiry into the 2013 IPL spot fixing and betting scandal. "Even the fact that neither the Delhi police nor Rajasthan police found any actionable case against me (for the obvious reasons that there was no evidence or material against me) has been used to make insinuations regarding my guilt for an act I never did. "I also find it very unfair that the full team, the other owners, the management team, the players and the fans of Rajasthan Royals have been so harshly treated due to the alleged actions of one. However, I am just a minority stakeholder of 11.7%," he concluded.

Pro boxing is about hard punching," he shot back. Vijender's professional boxing promoter Francis Warren also butted in after seeing his top Indian signing being grilled by the reporters, saying: "It's ambition." Warren took umbrage at another query on whether he had signed Vijender as a publicity stunt. "It's an extremely disrespectful remark first of all. Vijender is an extreme talent. He has been medaled at every competition he has entered where he has represented India with pride and honour and with huge success. "To me personally, I would not sign anybody without talent and ambition to succeed. I asked him what his
ambition was and he said he wanted to be a world champion. This has nothing to do with publicity," Warren emphasised. "He is an Olympic medallist. He could be your first world champion as well. He's a huge talent. I am extremely proud to sign him up. He has been the best amateur boxer in India for years and wants to be the best pro boxer. He can't box for ever...Maximum he has got 6-7 years (in his career). He should not feel after 50 that I wish I should have done this and that. He wants to put India on the boxing map. He has got all the talent and capability to do so," he insisted. Vijender had recently signed a multi-year promotional agreement with promoters UK-based Queensberry Promotions that will see the 29-year-old Haryana middleweight boxer fight a minimum of six times in the first year.

Will cherish the debut moment for life: Manish Pandey
H
arare: Glad to have made it count after getting the "lucky" break in India's one-day team, batsman Manish Pandey said receiving his ODI cap from senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was a moment he would cherish for the rest of his life. The 25-year-old Pandey was picked for the third and final ODI against Zimbabwe after Ambati Rayudu was ruled out due to injury. He made the most of the opportunity by scoring 71 runs. "This has been my dream for a long time now and I consider myself very lucky to have played for India. I was waiting for this opportunity for a while now and when I got it I just wanted to make it count. I thought I did pretty okay," Pandey told 'bcci.Tv'.
Pandey was handed his cap by Harbhajan and the youngster said it was an overwhelming moment for him. "It meant a lot to me and it is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. You know the feeling you have when you finally get something you have loved so much? It was a similar feeling and that gesture of kissing the cap just came out of those feelings. This was a dream not only for me but also my family and everybody who has worked with me over the years. It was for them," he said. Asked whether the experience of playing in 70 first-class matches worked to his advantage in the international debut, Pandey said it certainly did. "I didn't feel a lot of pressure because I knew I have seen this and done this before. It is definitely beneficial to have a lot of experience behind you when you start playing for India. It makes you more prepared to face any situation you might encounter and you will not be overwhelmed," he said. Pandey said he would look to build on the fine debut. "It is very important to have a good debut. It builds your confidence and gives you the belief that you belong. But I will not be thinking about this performance for too long. I have a long way to go and I will focus on what I have to do next.
WATSON FACES AXE AS SPORTS
AUSTRALIA SEEK TO LEVEL ASHES
L
ondon: Australia, reeling from the late withdrawal of wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, are reportedly set to drop Shane Watson for the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Thursday as they bid to level the five-match series at 1-1. Watson was twice out lbw cheaply in all-too familiar fashion as England, against many pre-series predictions, won the first Test in Cardiff by the crushing margin of 169 runs with more than a day to spare last week. With his medium-paced bowling barely used by captain Michael Clarke at Sophia Gardens, Australia's Fairfax Media reported Wednesday that the 34-year-old Watson would be dropped at Lord's and replaced by fellow allrounder Mitchell Marsh, 11 years his junior. Watson's lbw double in Cardiff means he has now passed fifty in just two of his past 16 innings. "My gut feeling is they'll probably go with Mitchell Marsh," former Australia captain Steve Waugh told Sky Sports before the Fairfax report, subsequently cited by Cricket Australia's own website, was published. "A guy at that age... When he's played a long time, when you make a decision like this now -- it's pretty much final. There's probably no way back from being dropped now." Marsh, the son of former
10-team World Cup is a retrograde step: MCC
L
ondon: The MCC World Cricket Committee, which includes former India captain Sourav Ganguly among others, feels the ICC's decision to limit the ODI World Cup to 10 teams is a "retrograde step" and detrimental to the sport's chances of finding a place in the Olympics. The committee met at Lord's on July 13 and 14 -the first gathering for new members Ganguly, Ricky Ponting and Ramiz Raja, and the last for outgoing members Rahul Dravid and Steve Bucknor. "The ICC Cricket World Cup should be a twelve-team tournament The committee believes that the organisa-
tion of a ten-team ICC Cricket World Cup for 2019 and 2023 is a retrograde step that damages the potential for growth in cricket's developing nations," the committee said in a statement after the meeting. "The committee urges the ICC Board to reconsider its position and take a decision that it believes is in the best interests of the global game. This would need to be done in the next twelve months for cricket to have a chance of being included in the 2024 Olympics. "A preliminary qualification round could be held for the lower ranked Full Member teams and the top Associate nations, that wouldn't lengthen the tour-
31
nament and would give more teams a chance to compete in the sport's best 50-over competition. The committee has asked ICC to look again at its decision to limit the numbers to only ten teams," it added. The committee also recommended that every effort should be made to make cricket an Olympic sport. "The Olympics is a fundamental opportunity for cricket – in both the men's and women's game – and with a global reach, such a presence would expose the game positively to new markets. "Competing in an Olympic Games would be a huge opportunity for players, a massive boost to developing cricket nations and give much greater exposure for the sport to a new audience. Government funding in many countries is specifically linked to a sport's Olympic status, and cricket's inclusion would unlock investment to cricket's governing bodies in ICC Associate and Affiliate countries," it said.
Australian Test cricket Captain Michael Clarke laughs as an Ashes mascot is led into position for pictures during a visit to St Edward’s Primary School in London, Wednesday. Australia opener Geoff Marsh, has played in four Tests and impressed in the team's opening two tour matches by scoring hundreds against both Kent and Essex. Cricket Australia told AFP Wednesday they would not comment on the Fairfax report, saying that the Test side would be announced as scheduled on Thursday morning at Lord's. Haddin, 37, withdrew on Tuesday for what a team spokeswoman said were "family reasons", although he will remain with the squad in London. Peter Nevill, also Haddin's New South Wales deputy, is now set for an international debut on Thursday. This is not the first time Haddin has put his family ahead of his cricket career. In 2012, Haddin took several
months out of the game after his then 17-month-old daughter Mia was diagnosed with neuroblastoma -- a rare form of cancer. Meanwhile the 29-year-old Nevill faces the prospect of making his Test debut at Lord's, which can prove tough for wicket-keepers because of how the ball can deviate alarmingly after passing the bat. But in the tour selection chief Rodney Marsh Nevill can consult one of Australia's greatest wicket-keepers. Australia appear to be increasingly confident that leftarm fast bowler Mitchell Starc, the pick of their attack in Cardiff, will be fit for Lord's despite suffering an ankle injury in Wales.Starc took a full part in training on Tuesday and, with Australia fast
bowler Ryan Harris announcing his injury-induced retirement on the eve of the Cardiff clash, the experienced Peter Siddle appears to next in line to come in. Siddle, however, was upbeat about Starc's fitness, saying Tuesday: "Starcy got through well today, bowled out in the middle off the long run, both ends, he's feeling good." Australia coach Darren Lehmann said he hoped the pitch at Lord's was quicker than Cardiff, but Siddle said adjusting to local conditions was a skill of the game. "That's part of the challenge of world cricket. Teams come to Australia and they get fast, bouncy ones (pitches). You've got to adapt to other conditions if you want to be one of the best teams."
Ponting has Olympic Twenty20 vision L
ondon: Australia great Ricky Ponting has given his public support to calls by the MCC world cricket committee for Twenty20 cricket to be included as an Olympic sport. Some officials in major cricket nations such as England have long been resistent to the idea of the sport joining the Olympics, fearing the impact it could have on its own home season. But others within cricket see the Games as an ideal way to spread the game globally, as emerging nations can receive government funding for Olympic-linked sports. Ponting, who serves on the MCC world cricket committee alongside fellow former Test captains Mike Brearley (England), Shaun Pollock (South Africa) and Sourav Ganguly (India), told reporters at Lord's on Tuesday: "It was quite unanimous throughout the members of this committee that we should look to grow the game into an Olympic sport. "The opportunity to open
up different markets, considering the Olympics is the pinnacle of global sport, to be able to get cricket into something like that would be an awesome spectacle in itself," he added at a news conference following a two-day meeting. "It would be great for the growth and development of cricket, obviously talking about T20 cricket here." Ponting continued: "There were a number of things that were tossed around, whether,
like with football, make it an Under-23 tournament. The whole discussion round cricket being in the Olympics was very positive. "That's one way of breaking into some of these markets and attracting new audiences into the game, which I think the game needs right now." Rugby Union, where many of the major nations are the same as those in cricket, will see its shortest format, Sevens, make its Olympic debut at next year's Rio Games. Meanwhile the committee said a plan by the ICC, now effectively controlled by the sport's three wealthiest nations of India, England and Australia, to cut the 2019 World Cup in England to a 10-team event was a "retrograde step". This year's edition in Australia and New Zealand featured 14 teams and there are fears for the future of cricket in emerging countries if they no longer have the incentive of a realistic shot at World Cup qualification.

Rivaldo and his son both score in Brazil’s second division
S
ao Paulo: Former Brazil star Rivaldo and his son both scored in the same match in the Brazilian league's second division on Tuesday.
The 43-year-old Rivaldo scored once and his 20-yearold son, Rivaldo Jr., netted twice in Mogi Mirim's 3-1 win over Macae. Rivaldo, who is also the president of Mogi Mirim, ended his retirement last month to try to help his team overcome a difficult start in this year's championship. Mogi Mirim was last in the 20-team standings until Tuesday's victory allowed it to leave the bottom of the ladder. Mogi Mirim hasn't lost in the two matches since Rivaldo's return. The former Barcelona playmaker said he was grateful and "happy to be able to score a goal and see his son score twice" in the same match.

them," Sterling told City's official website late Tuesday. His move across the northwest of England set the seal on a long-running transfer saga involving the England international who was under contract at Liverpool until 2017. But he had rejected a £100,000-a-week deal to extend his stay at Liverpool, with the Reds finally accepting City's third bid of the
close season. Sterling's behaviour, and that of his outspoken agent Aidy Ward, infuriated many Liverpool fans as well as drawing criticism from Anfield great Steven Gerrard. Sterling, however, was keen on Tuesday to acknowledge the part various Liverpool figures, including current manager Brendan Rodgers, had played in his development
since he was a teenager. "It has been a long journey from QPR and I'd like to thank a few people who have helped me along the way," he said."I'd like to thank Rafa Benitez for taking me to Liverpool as a 15 year-old -- that was a massive step for me and a new challenge. Also to Kenny Dalglish for showing such faith in me and putting me in at such a young age.
