Fresh charges: PM has ties with Lalit Modi; PM knew about help given to the fugitive
N
EW DELHI: The Congress on Monday alleged that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah. "It seems like Lalit Modi has connections with the Prime Minister and Amit Shah. We want to know what the relationship between the Prime Minister, Amit Shah and Lalit Modi is," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewaala. "Doesn't this make the External Affairs Minister an abettor to the crime and shouldn't an FIR be filed? The Prime Minister has lost the right to continue in his post after these facts have come to light," he added. He further said that it was hard to believe that the Prime Minister was unaware of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's action. "It's hard to believe that a Prime Minister, who runs the Foreign Affairs Ministry with the External Affairs Minister didn't know of an absconder being helped. It's unprecedented that written communication establishes a quid pro quo between the criminal in question and the minister," said Surjewala. Queen used to mimic Maggie, mock her accent
Queen Elizabeth II with British PM Margaret Thatcher: The two most powerful women in the world.
QUEEN ELIZABETH II used to do impersonations of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, mocked her accent and referred to her as ‘that woman’ to Commonwealth leaders, a new book has claimed. There have long been
claims about tensions between the Queen and Thatcher during her time in Downing Street and a new book by Dean Palmer has put the spotlight on the rapport between the two most powerful women in recent history, claiming that
they had repeated disagreements that were "very personal, class driven and distinctly female". In The Queen And Mrs Thatcher: An Inconvenient Relationship, the first published analysis of their lack of rapport, Palmer, who has made documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV, claims the two "met and disliked each other on sight." The Monarch referred to the then prime minister as "that woman" to Commonwealth leaders and made jokes about her behind her back, the book claims. The book tells how Thatcher's "entire character was anathema" to the Queen, the Sunday Express reported. It also states that the Queen mocked Thatcher's accent, which she described as "Royal Shakespeare received pronunciation from circa 1950." The book says that Thatcher loathed trips to Balmoral (Queen's favourite summer retreat), considering them a "tedious waste of time". The book also tells how the Queen, now 89, poked fun at Thatcher. Known for her mimicry, the Queen's favourite Thatcher gag was about the prime minister visiting an old
people's home. Imitating Thatcher's grandiose accent as she shook the hands of an elderly resident, the Queen would ask: "Do you know who I am?", before adding, "No, replied the confused resident, but if you ask matron, she'll tell you." The Falklands War with Argentina also caused further resentment between the pair as Thatcher became lauded as "mother of the nation" and the "public face of Britain abroad". "For over a decade they quietly waged a war against each other on both a personal and political stage, disagreeing on key issues...," Palmer writes. "Thatcher did love to lecture, which did not go down too well with Her Majesty," he writes. The then prime minister was also left "furious and humiliated" after being rebuffed by Buckingham Palace for suggesting that the pair should coordinate outfits, the book claims. "The Queen does not notice what other people are wearing," the haughty royal reply had said, according to the book. Thatcher was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. She died in 2013 aged 87 after suffering a stroke.
Models launching the Spinali bikini.
Smart bikini stops you from getting sunburned A smart bikini that measures exposure to ultraviolet radiation and alerts wearers when they are at risk of getting sunburned has been developed by a French company. The Spinali bikini is equipped with a waterproof sensor to measure ultraviolet radiation exposure and sends information to the wearer's smartphone, which warns the user to top up the suncream or seek shade. Users can input their skin type into a
smartphone app to ensure that the alarm goes off at the right moment, The Times reported. Marie Spinali, who founded Spinali Design in Mulhouse, got the idea of a smart bikini when she saw someone get sunburned on the beach. "After all there are flower pots that tell you when the plants need watering, so we should invent something for when the sun is too hot," Spinali said. The smart bikinis are priced between 149 euros and 198 euros.

Sharp-shooter nabbed after two-month chase By Asif Rizvi
T
he Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Anil Pandurang Rabale on Sunday from Thane. He was involved in several firing cases including a shootout on Shiv Sena MLA Vaibhav Naik in 2009. The accused is also involved in April 11 firing incident in which a victim Pramod Kantekar was injured. Jt. CP, Crime Atulchandra Kulkarni said, “After the April 11 firing incident an accused of a local gang was arrested initially. The investigations led to the arrest of another member of the gang on April 20 and finally we got hold of a repeated offender and the prime accused in the case after chasing him for almost two months.” According to Crime Branch, Rabale kept giving police the slip for nearly two months, as he used tricks of not settling at one place for more than 2 to 4 days. He kept himself hidden in many districts of Maharashtra
during these two months. The prior investigation has revealed that Rabale after, firing incidents, kept on a move and did not settle at one place for long. “The accused in our records is active in committing crimes for over 10 years. There are 11 serious cases against him. He has also been in jail in a previous case for about two and a half years. After firing at Pramod Kantekar on RAK Marg, the accused had planned to gun down a person in Thane but was arrested by the Crime Branch on specific information. We have also recovered 6 pistols of good quality and 19 live rounds from his possession. We are investigating if Rabale and his members work for an underworld gang,” said Kulkarni. However, sources said, “Rabale is a sharp shooter, operating a gang named Shiv Thakur Gang, which is based in Bhandup and Thane areas. He had gone to shoot a politician of a party from Thane.”
Pleading for brother’s innocence, man slits neck with blade inside Bandra court By Zuber Ansari
I
n a case of attempt to commit suicide inside the Bandra Magistrate Court building, a 25-year-old man tried to kill himself by slashing his own neck with a blade inside the court building when his brother who is an accused arrested on charges of rioting and trespassing was being produced before the court on Monday
by the Khar police officials. The man who has been identified by only his first name, Makwana, claims that his brother is innocent and the court was not granting him bail, so he got frustrated and was forced to slash his neck with a blade. The incident created chaos in the court premises and court attendant of Nirmal Nagar police station informed Nirmal Nagar police
station about the incident. According to the police, Makwana visited in the court around 4.30 pm along with his sister, when his younger brother Ravi Pannalal Makwana was produced in the court number 9 by the Khar police. He was pleading to the Magistrate that his brother was innocent. However, as there was a big crowd inside the courtroom, the magistrate did not notice
him. “Makwana then removed a blade which he was carrying with him and slit his neck. He sustained injury and his sister immediately rushed him to Bhabha hospital where he got two stitches. It was a superficial cut on Makwana’s neck. So the doctor said it is not serious and after two stitches he was discharged from the hospital. We are investigating the case
and will record the statement of Makwana,” said senior police inspector Sudhir Jambavdekar of the Nirmal Nagar police station. He further added, “There are some Supreme Court guidelines in attempt to suicide case. We will follow those guidelines and if required, we will book Makwana in attempt to suicide case after he is discharged from hospital and we will
call him to record his statement.” Senior Police Inspector from Khar police station Dattatray Bargude said, “Ravi Pannalal Makwana is an accused along with 20 other people in a rioting and dacoity case. However, his brother has slashed his neck, not Ravi. All the accused were produced before the Bandra court which sent them to judicial custody.”

Ponder awhile... “The promise given was a necessity of the past: the word broken is a necessity of the present.” — Niccolo Machiavelli
Serious charges against Sushma T
HE Opposition parties — particularly the Congress — are making many charges against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who has got the British to issue a passport to IPL fugitive Lalit Modi. They dismiss her explanation that she did this on humanitarian grounds. They assert that as a minister she should not have helped a criminal to get the passport. And they are also saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah are involved in the deal. The PM could not have been unaware that she was helping a criminal. It is certain that they knew about what the external affairs minister was doing. The Congress charge is she helped a man who is wanted in India in connection with an IPL scam. The BJP and the RSS are giving full support to Sushma Swaraj. It is clear she will ignore the Opposition demand for her resignation. There is no chance of her resigning at all. What has become obvious is that the Sangh Parivar has got together and decided to deny all charges against the external affairs minister. The Opposition is likely to keep the missile attack but it is not likely to produce the result it wants. There have been grave charges against the Congress in the past, but it has been able to wriggle out of all problems. It can be expected that the BJP too will brazen it out and emerge unscathed.

RIME Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka was mistimed. It looked as if he had gone to shore up the sagging image of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He has only heightened the anti-India feeling graph. New Delhi is not seen neutral. I do not know why and for how long have we to support the authoritarian rule by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. True, she is the daughter of Sheikh Mujib-ur Rehman, who liberated East Pakistan from distant and oppressive West Pakistan. But that does not give her the right to flout the constitution and the accepted norms.

first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, put the country —democratic and secular — is being followed diligently. His daughter Indira Gandhi derailed democracy and not only gagged the press, but suspended the fundamental rights. But people did not take things lying down. They ventilated their pent-up anger when elections were announced and it is unimaginable that the even the mighty Indira Gandhi could be defeated. It is another matter that when she returned to power in 1980 she went out of the way to
Municipal polls Take for example, the recent municipal polls at Dhaka and Chittagong. Ballot papers in favour of the candidates of the ruling Awami League were shoved into the ballot boxes to the horror of voters and others. Sheikh Mujib must be turning in his grave. He had restored the people’s right to express themselves against the military junta ruling from Rawalpindi. No doubt, Modi’s visit has given a shot in the arm of secular forces against the burgeoning influence of the fundamentalists, led by the Jammiat-e-Islam. Hasina would still have had her way. In fact, the cavalier manner in which she has suppressed the dissent arouses doubts about her credentials. Did she ever have conviction about a free state and the democratic way of governance? The most glaring example is the manner in which she has humiliated Bangladesh’s first foreign minister Kamal Hasan. He is a colleague of her father Sheikh Mujib and is a legend in his lifetime for adhering to the values. The boycott of elections by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was an unthinking act. True, Hasina made it obvious that she would go to any extent to win at the polls. Yet, if the BNP had participated a few of its candidates would have been returned and opposed Hasina’s point of view before the people. Undoubtedly, general elections decide the fate of rulers. But the municipal vote is important to assess whether the party, which won, has fulfilled through the governance the promises made during the poll campaign. India is lucky that the path on which the
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar punish even bureaucrats those who carried out their duties. But it is a pity that she took revenge against all those whom she suspected were anywhere near the Janata government. The Congress Party in India, the author of the Emergency, has learnt its lesson. The party has regretted its misdoings. I wish the party had apologized to the nation. There is a lot of difference between regret and apology. Unfortunately Bangladesh, a product of the people’s right to say, has lost the vigour of expression which the nation once had. Such a happening is a sad development by itself. But it becomes all the more poignant when the person changing it is from the family which liberated the people from the clutches of West Pakistan. No one else is to blame except Hasina. She is herself extinguishing the flame of democracy. True, it should be done by the daughter of Sheikh Mujib is not only disappointing but also disconcerting. She can shackle the nation still further is a harrowing thought. But it
can happen since she has effaced the line between right and wrong, moral and immoral.
Dictatorial figure
In this atmosphere of Hasina representing a dictatorial figure, Modi’s visit was all the more unfortunate. He should have said somewhere while in Bangladesh that the country was a product of revolution and it should continue to radiate the same kind of thoughts. But he preferred to placate her even though the people of Bangladesh were disappointed because they expected India to give some sign that it is not happy with the way Hasina was functioning. True, Modi was able to implement a longstanding agreement on the exchange of enclaves. But this understanding had the support of all parties when the matter was discussed in Parliament. Of course, the credit for implementing the accord goes to him. But he should have used the opportunity to thank all the political parties in supporting the accord with a useful and endearing neighbour. For him to take the credit of demolishing the 'Berlin Wall' is churlish. I wish he had refrained from criticizing Pakistan. Not that the criticism is uncalled for but on a foreign soil when he was talking about amity in South Asia, he should have avoided singling out Islamabad. He should realize, as his predecessors have, that the countries in South Asia someday must have a common market and lend a helping hand to each other in business, trade and development. The people of Bangladesh were expecting some agreement on the Teesta waters. But foreign minister Sushma Swaraj’s statement was unhelpful because even before undertaking the journey to Dhaka she said that Teesta waters was not on the agenda during the current visit by Modi. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit along with Prime Minister Modi was an important development. It should indicate to Dhaka that New Delhi is serious about settling the problems of Teesta waters. That it did not happen during Modi’s visit should not be taken as if India was adamant in having its own way. In fact, Mamata’s visit should please Dhaka that the settlement may take some time but the process has started.
Life by its very nature creates suffering W
HEN I say enjoy it I don’t mean become a masochist; I don’t mean create suffering for yourself and enjoy it. I don’t mean: go on, fall down from a cliff, have fractures and then enjoy it. No. I am not saying be a masochist; I am simply saying suffering is there, you need not seek for it. Enough suffering is there already, you need not go in search. Suffering is already there; life by its very nature creates suffering. Illness is there, death is there, the body is there; by their very nature suffering is created. See it, look at it with a very dispassionate eye. Look at it — what it is, what is happening. Don’t escape. Immediately the mind says, “Escape from here, don’t look at it.” But if you escape then you cannot be blissful. When: Next time you fall ill and the doctor suggests to remain in bed. The Method: Close your eyes and rest on the bed and just look at the illness. Watch it, what it is. Don’t try to analyse it, don’t go into theories, just watch it, what it is. The whole
body tired, feverish — watch it. Suddenly, you will feel that you are surrounded by fever but there is a very cool point within you; the fever cannot touch it, cannot influence it. The whole body may be burning but that cool point cannot be touched. So when you are lying on your bed, feverish, on fire, the whole body burning, just
MATTER & SPIRIT watch it. Watching, you will recede towards the source. Watching, not doing anything.... What can you do? The fever is there, you have to pass through it; it is no use unnecessarily fighting with it. You are resting, and if you fight with the fever you will become more feverish, that’s all. So watch it. Watching fever, you become cool; watching more, you become cooler. Just watching, you reach to a peak, such a cool peak, even the Himalayas will feel jealous; even their
peaks are not so cool. This is the Gourishankar, the Everest within. And when you feel that the fever has disappeared.... It has never really been there; it has only been in the body, very, very far away. Infinite space exists between you and your body — infinite space, I say. An unbridgeable gap exists between you and your body. And all suffering exists on the periphery. Hindus say it is a dream because the distance is so vast, unbridgeable. It is just like a dream happening somewhere else — not happening to you — in some other world, on some other planet. When you watch suffering suddenly you are not the sufferer, and you start enjoying. Through suffering you become aware of the opposite pole, the blissful inner being. So when I say enjoy, I am saying: Watch. Return to the source, get centered. Then, suddenly, there is no agony; only ecstasy exists. — Osho

Sushma’s visa deal for fugitive Modi WHAT humanitarian grounds is foreign minister Sushma Swaraj talking in her shocking revelation that she did help absconder Lalit Modi expedite travel documents to travel to Portugal to be with his ailing wife? The kingpin in the IPL scam has scant respect for the laws of our country and has been absconding from our shores for years now in spite of red corner notice against him and a senior minister in the Narendra Modi government is talking of humanity in helping such an culprit. Lalit Modi is wanted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Income Tax department (IT) and several other investigating agencies of our land. Would Sushma Swaraj have shown similar mercy and humanity if the culprit was some other absconding individual running away from the laws of our land. Also, what proprietary position does our minister holds when her own husband has sort favours from Lalit Modi in the past and her own lawyer daughter is the
Sushma Swaraj stoked controversy after she helped scam-tainted Lalit Modi to get travel documents to visit his ailing wife in Portugal
Indian political scene. The external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj embroiled in a controversy that helped Lalit Modi to get travel paper to leave the country and now settled in UK fearing arrest by the ED for his all his misdeeds during first few phases of IPL extravaganza. Lalit Modi's passport was revoked in 2010 after the enforcement directorate initiated proceedings against him. Now the opposition demands her resignation and the ruling party is trying to defend her. Now Sushma is also trying to defend her decision to help out an erring IPL supremo. This is very common in India as no fears law in this land as they get escape route by hook or crook as in the case of the Bhopal gas tragedy. Warren Anderson, CEO of Union Carbide during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy had an escape route thanks to our magnanimous politicians, who are ready to do anything for money and allow the culprits to go scot free.

There are a host of neurological conditions that can affect children, ranging from learning disabilities to schizophrenia. Anindra Siqueira & Dev Goswami tell you more about them
L
ast week we told you about behavioural disorders that manifest in childhood and how you should deal with them. In the second of our two-part series on children’s disorders, we’re telling you about neurological or psychological conditions, what you can do, and how drugs are used in connection with them. We’re also bringing you a case study to help you understand the issue better. “When parents want to understand the level of their child’s development, they focus on motor skills, vision, hearing, speech and other evident parameters. But, they frequently neglect aspects of imaginative ability, socialising and communication skills, a deficit of which lead to problems such as being unable to understand the world and pervasive development disorders. Dyslexia, or learning disabilities, also represent a specific deficit in written, read or spoken language,” psychiatrist, counsellor, author and founder of MINDFRAMES, Dr. Shefali Batra, explains.
Worrying signs There are several neurological conditions that affect your child’s behaviour — it takes some parents years to even begin to see the patterns. Dr. Shefali tells us about the signs you should watch out for.

n schizophrenia While schizophrenia
is an expansive disorder — consult any library and you will find volumes of subject matter, more than you will be able to take in. However, all you need to know is that it involves losing touch with reality. Dr. Shefali says, “There may be delusions, where children believe in things that aren’t true, as well as hallucinations, where they see, hear or feel things that aren’t actually present.

n Learning disabilities (LDs)
Learning disabilities, or learning disorders (LD), are a group of conditions that include dyslexia and problems that make it difficult to read, write or do mathematics. Dr. Shefali says, “The LDs include a series of deficits that interfere with the child’s learning. Children with LD process what is taught to them in a manner that’s different Continued on pg 14 «

Learning disabilities are becoming increasingly common, especially since schools have begun to follow a system where students are accepted into higher standards whether they pass or fail at least to the eighth standard. This makes it difficult for children with learning disabilities to get the attention that they need. Dr. Shefali says that learning disabilities (LD) are not the same as mental retardation. She tells us, “Intelligence is an overall description of ability in different dimensions. We usually determine intelligence through words and performance. Children with LD may have good performance abilities. However, they may lack the verbal component of intelligence, which includes words, vocabulary and mathematics. These children are well aware of their environment and may be street smart. However, their intellectual performance in school may be lacking. With advancing age, the ability to retain information becomes increasingly deficient, and the child loses the potential he/she is capable of.”

The effects of abuse
from the conventional pattern. The information in their brain is processed differently and the techniques these children use to understand things is unusual.” Some parents don’t realise when their children suffer from learning disabilities, because they seem fine in other areas of schoolwork. When parents dismiss their children as naughty and playful, or subconsciously deny their inability to learn math, it can aggravate the problem. We don’t know why learning disabilities occur, but they are believed to be a result of illestablished neural connections.
Abuse — whether its parental or familial — can have nasty consequences; that is quite obvious. But, childhood abuse is not the only reason for mental health disorders. Dr. Shefali tells us that there is no definitive cause of mental disorders; it’s a complex interplay of biological, psychological and social factors. However, abuse is one of the foremost social factors that can increase the likelihood of a child suffering from a mental disorder.
n autism Autism is not a single disorder,
but a spectrum of disorders. It can be spotted at an early age — in most cases, before children are 3-years-old. Children with autism have difficulty using words to communicate their emotions. Dr. Shefali says, “Such children do not display regular interests, and prefer inanimate objects over animate ones. They require a sense of ‘sameness’ in their routine and get upset when their surroundings change. They also engage in repeated rocking movements to stimulate themselves.” The most common behaviour that children with autism exhibit is that they don’t maintain eye contact. Sometimes, even moving furniture around the room can affect their behaviour drastically and they will try to restore what they think of as order.
>> Parents can be supportive and accepting of their child’s disorder, in order for them to grow
n asperger’s syndrome A type of high-
functioning autism, people who suffer from Asperger’s generally have above average intelligence and also have a problem with social interactions. Dr. Shefali, explains, “Asperger’s gets diagnosed when children are slightly older, because language and communication matures at a later age, and it is often overlooked, as these children are misunderstood by their parents and peers, who think they are odd or asocial. They require understanding and you need to build up trust before they can be helped to learn socially appropriate behaviour.” n Tic disorders and Tourette’s syndrome
This condition is characterised by involuntary movements. People who suffer from it also blurt out random, mostly obscene, words. Dr. Shefali says, “These are known as ‘tics’ and could be motor tics (movement) or verbal tics (words). The presenting symptom is frequent blinking. This may progress to facial and body movements including kicking, jumping or thrusting motions. Verbal tics vary from a simple throat >> Accepting that your child suffers from a disorder will help ensure quick, effective treatment
clearing sound to grunting, barking or uttering obscene words.” Children who have tic disorders are impulsive and display hyperactive behaviour. n eating disorders These include
bulimia, anorexia and even bingeeating. However, they are less common amongst children and usually occur during adolescence. They are serious conditions and shouldn’t be ignored. Some can even be life-threatening. Dr. Shefali says that children become so preoccupied with food and body weight that they cannot focus on anything else.
parenTal reCourse Dr. Shefali says, “Parents are disheartened when they find out that their child has a pervasive developmental disorder. In my experience, I have seen an array of reactions ranging from a complete breakdown, self-blame, to a more mature,
problem-solving approach, where they accept the truth and make an effort to help thier child. These children are creative and imaginative. With adequate support and a specialised treatment plan, you can improve their communicability and behaviour.” Many of the conditions that we’ve listed can be treated with a combination of drugs and cognitive behaviour therapy. When children have autism, and more specifically Asperger’s, parents need to build trust before their children can be taught socially appropriate behaviour. Tourette’s syndrome can be treated with behaviour therapy, where children are taught to unlearn an unhealthy habit and relearn a healthy one. Dr. Shefali says that with learning disabilities, management is essential. The earlier these disabilities are dealt with, the better the chances of keeping up with other children and school curriculums. She tells us that parents and teachers can also be given special teaching methods to facilitate the learning process.
dyslexia in real life From all the neurological disorders that exist, dyslexia is one that is perhaps the most widely-known, partly because it has been showcased in several films. We’re telling you about a real-life case of Jeevan, a 9-year-old boy, who came from a welloff family and whose school referred him to Dr. Shefali because his teachers thought he was a slow learner. Jeevan’s case illustrates how possessing the correct knowledge about psychological disorders can help a child — instead of being labelled as slow, or challenged, both Jeevan’s school and his parents saw to it that he was given the appropriate care. Dr. Shefali tells us that after a
series of tests, which assessed his learning abilities, he was diagnosed with dyslexia. He was then put on a remedial education programme with special educators and tutors. His behaviour was modified using the token reward system and reinforcement strategies, which were explained to his mother as well. His confidence was built using cognitive restructuring. Today, he has developed an affinity for reading and writing, both of which were once phobias for him. He is well-adjusted in school and has several friends. He also gets along with his brother and while his performance is average, Dr. Shefali tells us that it’s highly commendable.
Can drugs help?
No one likes the idea of young children being subjected to long-term doses of medication. However, it is important to realise that when it comes to managing neurological disorders — or even behavioural disorders, for that matter — drugs work in conjunction with therapy. Drugs can help subside the physical symptoms of neurological disorders, which helps pave the way for quicker, more effective therapy. Dr. Shefali tells us that medication can help with conditions such as ADHD, rash and destructive behaviours, extreme depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, she does tell us that it isn’t ethical for a doctor to prescribe unnecessary medication, especially to a child. She adds, “Some medicines require blood tests, ECG and CT scans before they can be prescribed. Medicines should always be given under supervision to ensure that the child is really taking them and also to make sure that there is absolutely no risk of overdose.” She does agree that some of these drugs can have major sideeffects. The drugs that are used to treat ADHD, for example, have been connected to stunted growth, while those for schizophrenia can cause tremors, weight gain and metabolic abnormalities. But, Dr. Shefali says, “I’d say there is no medicine that doesn’t have side effects. Simple medication that we take for fever and headache as well as stronger drugs taken during cancer treatments all have tremendous side effects, but the benefits outweigh the risks; that is why we take them.”

Are organic desserts the healthy option that will give you a license to indulge, even if you’re trying to lose weight? Sara Shah finds out >> Should you go organic if you want to eat healthier? Read on to find out more
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015
I
f you think that eating healthy is easy, we’re going to be blunt and tell you the truth— it’s not! From cutting down on portions to giving up on your favourite food, you’re going to have to make a number of tough decisions for the sake of your wellbeing. And, giving up on dessert is probably going to be the toughest! How we do this differs — some people end up cutting out all kinds of desserts, while others try to cut out only those ingredients that are unhealthy. But, what if you didn’t have to do any of those things? What if all you had to do was to switch to using organic ingredients?
whaT iT means To go organic We are all familiar with the organic food trend. But, what does it entail? For those who don’t know what it means, let us clear things up. The term is used to describe food that is produced without the use of chemicals. “Organic foods are obtained from plants that are grown without the help of chemical fertilisers or pesticides. It’s the most natural form of food and is full of healthy nutrients,” says Karishma Chawla, nutritionist and founder of Eat Rite 24x7.
The difference beTween healThy and organic Aren’t all organic foods healthy? You should be able to indulge in organic desserts to your heart’s content, right? Well, not exactly. When we’re talking about healthy desserts those are desserts, where unhealthy ingredients are replaced with healthier ones. For example, you can replace butter with fruit puree or avocado to get the same texture, minus the calories. When it comes to organic desserts, one or more ingredients are organically produced. While most organic ingredients are healthier than conventionally grown produce, this doesn’t mean that the dessert as a whole will help you lose weight, since it may be high in calories.
so, should i even boTher? Studies have shown that organicallygrown produce contains higher amounts of anthocyanins and carotenoids, which are categorised as phytochemicals. These phytochemicals are extremely beneficial for our health. Karishma suggests taking into account factors such as your individual needs and how many calories you require before picking organic desserts. She says, “The ingredients in organic desserts come from organicallygrown plants, and so, these desserts can be considered healthier than regular healthy desserts. However, this doesn’t account for the needs of fitness enthusiasts or those looking to lose weight.” So, even if your dessert is partially or completely organic, you still have to keep factors such as portions and calories in mind before you indulge.
>> Choosing to eat healthy is good, but take your needs into consideration
« know more The benefiTs of resisTanT sTarch How much do you know about resistant starch? Pooja Salvi tells you how beneficial this wonder fibre can be for your body as compared to regular carbohydrates
B
efore we tell you why you should consume more resistant starch (which is considered a superfood) you will want to know what it is and why it is considered so beneficial. Something that you can probably glean from its name, this type of starch is resistant to digestion; it doesn’t get digested in your stomach or small intestine like most foods do, and reaches your colon practically intact. This means that your body absorbs almost no calories from this type of food. Although this is probably the first time you’ve heard of resistant starch, it has likely been part of your diet for most of your life.
how is This beneficial?
The sources of resisTanT sTarch
Resistant starch is mostly found in foods that are high in carbohydrates. These include items such as potatoes, green
(unripe) bananas, grains, green beans, legumes and plaintains. There are four types of resistant starch three of which occur naturally, while the fourth is produced by chemically modifying natural starch. When certain starchy foods are cooked and cooled (a process called retrogradation) they turn into a good source of resistant starch. Soaked or sprouted legumes are a rich source of resistant starch, but only when they’ve been cooked and cooled.
>> Cooked legumes are a rich source of resistant starch
As you may expect, there are several reasons why undigested food benefits you. The most obvious one is that consuming resistant starch impacts weight loss in a positive manner. Not only does it fill you up and cut down on hunger, resistant starch also boosts your body’s ability to burn fat. Since you can’t digest it, the starch doesn’t enter your bloodstream and isn’t stored as body fat. Resistant starch also improves blood sugar levels, boosts immunity and reduces your cancer risk.

5 Use good quality
1
Switch to waterproof makeup Yes, we’re recommending that you wear certain makeup products to keep your skin healthy. You don’t want your skin to look patchy or your makeup to cause any damage. So, make sure you invest in waterproof liners, mascara and foundation.
2
Stay clean Humidity causes facial acne. We recommend you go for at least two clean-up sessions before the monsoon sets in. Make sure to use mild products that suit your skin, otherwise you may irritate it, leaving it vulnerable to infections.
hair products While freshly-washed hair feels like pure bliss, the minute your hair becomes dry, it is going to end up looking like a bird’s nest. So, it’s essential that you invest in good quality hair products in order to manage your tresses.
« Ten ways To:
prepare for monsoon The sky is overcast and there are clouds overhead, signalling that time of the year again — the monsoon has arrived! Yamini Walia has some tips to help you start the season on a healthy note
Trim it If you have long hair, it’s time you cut it to protect it from the effects of humidity. Humidity can result in split ends, making your hair unruly and unmanageable. If you don’t want to cut it really short, at least go for a trim.
3
Don’t skip the routine Continue with your summer routine of using sunscreen and moisturiser. Just because the sun doesn’t seem bright enough, doesn’t mean that you don’t need sunscreen. Your skin can get damaged during the monsoon too.
4
Treat skin infections During the monsoon, you are at a greater risk of contracting skin infections because your body is more susceptible to bacteria, which aggravates infections. So, make sure you consult a doctor and get yourself checked.
>> Eating lunch at your desk will distract you and make you prone to overeating
9
6
Get a hair spa During summer, your hair becomes listless and dry, irrespective of your hair type. During the monsoon, however, it will become frizzy and will be vulnerable to damage. So, before the rains set in, head to a salon for a hair spa treatment. This will repair sun damage and will protect your hair from the vagaries of monsoon.
8 Get a pedicure kit Your feet are going to get dirty during the monsoon, especially when you’re outdoors. In order to ensure that your feet stay clean, invest in a pedicure kit. This will keep your feet clean and free from infections.
10
De-tan An unwanted tan is possibly the biggest problem that summer leaves us with. If you want to look fresh and dewy on a gloomy, rainy day, you need to get rid of your tan. Prepare a homemade scrub by mixing aloe vera gel, tomatoes, lemon and sugar crystals together. Applying this will reduce your tan and even out your skin tone.

Even if you’re in a hurry, start your day with fruits, yoghurt, homemade cereal bars and smoothies. Remember to drink water after your meal. Sharing food with sick colleagues, eating from unclean plates and ordering food from unsafe places can ruin your health. Also, store food in the fridge through the day so that it doesn’t spoil. Mostly Bs Your lunch habits are comparatively healthy. Do remember to avoid eating at your desk; doing so makes you lose track of how much you’ve eaten. Eat slowly, take smaller bites and chew thoroughly. Also, processed food and food that has been prepared in restaurants is high in sodium. Eat home-cooked food for lunch as much as possible, but remember to refrigerate it if it is last night’s leftovers.

A change in breast size is likely to be the result of weight gain or weight loss. Because breasts have fat cells, they grow when you put on weight and shrink when you lose too much. Similarly, contraceptive pills can affect your breast size. While taking the pill can make breasts bigger, going off the pill too often can shrink them.

Apart from ill-fitted bras, drinking too much coffee causes pain around your chest. This happens because caffeine exacerbates fibrocystic breast disease. Interestingly, carrying a heavy bag on the same shoulder for days can cause aches too.
Droopy BreASTS
As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, making breasts droopy. If you have breastfed, this gets even worse. Avoiding yo-yo diets is a good way to delay this. Instead, try doing push-ups and chest presses to make your chest muscles firm and help your breasts appear perky once again.
Men hAve BreASTS Too!

Women often experience lumps or bumps around their chest area during their period. These lumps are often spotted on the sides of the breasts or around the nipple area. While they are normally of little concern, we recommend that you visit a doctor to be sure.

Bizarre yoga trends around the world
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015 >> Yoga is always performed barefoot — remember to carry a mat along with you!
Yoga is an ancient practice, but as socio-economic conditions have changed over the years, so have people’s methods of practicing yoga. Purva Indulkar tells you about five of the most bizarre trends n Nude yoga Nude yoga was born during the
n
n
n
n
hippie movement of the ’60s, but it has recently gathered momentum. Nude yoga classes offer combinations such as slightly clothed, co-ed and same-sex nude classes. But, they discourage people who think that there is a sexual angle to the practice. Most people who practice this form of yoga have claimed that it has not only made them healthier, but has also rid their minds of insecurities about their appearance. It is considered to be a form of physical liberation! Cannabis yoga For centuries cannabis has been controversially entwined with spiritualism — naga sadhus at the Kumbh Mela can often be found smoking cannabis. Modern advocators of the plant use drugs such as marijuana and opium to achieve a temporary state of enlightenment. But this method of attaining harmony of the body, mind and soul is addictive and touted as unhealthy as well. Doga As a spiritual practice, yoga encourages a union and connection with other beings. So, doga — yoga with your dog — is becoming increasingly popular. It involves meditation, stretching and massages for humans and their canine companions. Those who perform doga claim that it helps to improve their dog’s heart health and digestion and reduces stress among dog owners. But, some also struggle to get their dogs to follow orders and change position. If dogs are not your cup of tea, you could try equine yoga, but you’ll have to get used to meditating with a horse! Yoga raves If you want to explore the party scene, but prefer to avoid smoking, drinking and drugs (and you should!) yoga raves are your best option. These classes are basically a yoga party with a club-like atmosphere. The sessions start with slow stretching and guided meditation. Instructors encourage participants to connect with the music psychologically instead of just physically. Anti-gravity yoga This puts a modern spin on traditional yoga by combining it with aerial arts, pilates, gymnastics and contemporary dance. Practioneers perform asanas mid-air using hammocks and silk as props.

Back to the Beginning! International Yoga Day is just around the corner, and there’s no sign of the yoga craze around the world dying down. If you want to get started, Anindra Siqueira will help you out by giving you a quick beginner’s guide to the healthy practice
J
une 21 is International Yoga Day, which you’re probably aware of by now, thanks to the All India Muslim Personal Board (AIMPLB) threatening to protest against compulsory Surya Namaskars in schools on June 21, which gave yoga a baseless, communal undertone. Even if you’ve never performed yoga or taken a class before, don’t worry. We’ve listed out a few things that will help you kickstart your routine.
WhAt You shoulD kNoW Yoga is immensely popular in the West as a way to stay fit and keep yourself healthy. But, it started off quite differently. Dr. Amrapali Patil, weight management expert, yoga guru and founder of Trim N Tone, tells us, “Not many people understand that yoga has wider implications and that it is a way of life. Other than its physical benefits, the real benefits come from the yogic mind-body coordination.” She also tells us that you should get yourself medically evaluated before you begin taking yoga classes. This way, you can practice certain asanas or poses that target specific medical conditions that you may have.
tips Dr. Amrapali also gives us a few tips to follow if you’re a beginner. n Never practice yoga on a full stomach Eat around two or three hours before you practice yoga, but you should still avoid
eating anything that’s too heavy.
n stay supervised “Always practice under
the direct supervision of an expert, especially when you’re practising pranayama, a set of breathing exercises,” says Dr, Amrapali. This way, you will know whether you’re on the right track and can be guided correctly. n keep water at hand Having a bottle of water by your side is a good idea. Dr. Amrapali recommends taking small sips instead of gulping it down. n Be comfortable Always wear comfortable clothing that won’t lead to friction when you move.
WhAt to expeCt If this is your first tryst with yoga, you may feel a bit lost at your first class, but that’s a good thing! Starting with a clean slate is great; be positive and have an open mind.
Here’s what you can expect from your first session: n Yoga is done barefoot You’ll have to leave your shoes and socks outside, because yoga is practiced barefoot. n You should never be in too much pain It’s normal to feel your muscles stretching, but if you experience any kind of pain, you should either stop the pose or modify it to avoid injury. n poses go in sequence There are different styles of yoga, but they either include a quick series of linked poses or those with breaks in between. n Your yoga teacher may physically adjust your posture Maintaining proper body posture is crucial, so don’t be surprised if the instructor physically adjusts your position. n You won’t be perfect This is the most important thing to prepare yourself for. You won’t be an expert right from the getgo. Don’t lose motivation. n You don’t have to practice every day Yoga is about achieving a mind-body connection. Although Dr. Amrapali advises practicing yoga every day, if it’s too strenuous, skip a day! n Don’t skip the final pose The corpse pose (also called shavasana), is done at the end. You lie on your back in a relaxed state. It’s important to give your body a break from all the stretching and twisting, so make sure you stay for this pose.

>> During IVF treatments, the donated egg and sperm are fused together artificially
DonaTions Have you ever considered donating your eggs? If so, Sara Shah & Pooja Salvi have a few insights to give you on the matter. Read on to find out more about egg donations
L
et’s talk about egg donations. There’s a reason why they aren’t spoken about as much as sperm donations are and it’s because several women, even today, have a very conservative view of the procedure. While some of these women have an unfaltering trust in their ability to conceive, others are simply not comfortable carrying a child that isn’t their own flesh and blood, or with someone else carrying their children, for that matter. But, there are also several misconceptions surrounding egg donation. We tell you more about the procedure and also get Dr. Duru Shah, gynecologist and director of Gynaecworld to give us a few insights. Take a look.
>> Donors should ask their gynecologists for all the details before the procedure
What is Egg Donation? Egg donation is a procedure where a suitable donor donates her eggs to a donation facility, where they are fertilised with the help of procured sperm, through a process called In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The developing embryos are then transferred into the recipient’s uterus or that of a surrogate. Speaking about how often an egg donation is likely to be required, Dr. Duru Shah tells us, “Egg donations for IVF treatments depend on the age of the clients that the donation centre caters to. For women who are between 33 to 35-years-old, the requirement for egg donors is about 1020% and increases as they get older. A majority o women who are over 40-years-old require egg donors. Also, since Indian women undergo menopause approximately five years earlier than women in the west, the quality of eggs retrieved at the same age is lower, and so, they require egg donations much earlier.”
What is thE critErion for thE sElEction of Egg Donors? There are certain factors to be considered when you’re donating your eggs. “Most donors come from agencies, but these agencies are not necessarily run by professionals. An egg donor is selected based on her physical characteristics, which should match the recipient’s skin colour, hair, eyes and height. We also carry out investigations to check for infections or genetic disorders. All relevant medical tests (besides eliciting a detailed medical history) are performed to evaluate their overall health,” says Dr. Shah. Age is also another factor to consider. The donor needs to be in her 20s, and physically fit in order to provide the best quality eggs.
arE thErE any risks involvED? Medical procedures are often accompanied by sideeffects. “There are usually no complications with the process of retrieval, but we do follow up with the donors for about a week after the process. Very rarely, the needle may hit a blood vessel in the ovary and blood may slowly ooze out, putting the donor at risk of collapsing suddenly, even 2-3 days after
the procedure,” explains Dr. Shah. Another aspect to consider that clinics often overdo the stimulation of the ovaries in order to retrieve as many eggs as possible and share those eggs between multiple recipients. The side-effects of such hyper-stimulation can include distended ovaries and an accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, which may require hospitalisation.
WoUlD yoU DonatE yoUr Eggs? We asked a few young women around the city whether they would donate their eggs to strangers or otherwise. Here’s what they told us is any money involved as long as I can help someone create a family and give them an ounce of happiness.” — Raksha Lulla, 23-years-old
in a timE of nEED “As a woman, donating your eggs can be a big decision. I don’t think I will ever volunteer to donate my eggs. However, if it is for someone who desperately needs it, I would consider it.” — Pandharkar, 26-years-old
for my lovED onEs “The legal age to donate your eggs is 21-years-old, but I’m only 22-yearsold, so I don’t think I have given this much thought. Of course, it’s a big decision to make, and if it’s someone whom I love dearly, I would agree to donate my eggs. But, donating them to a total stranger is not something that I have focused on.” — Anjali Makhija, 22-years-old
not a solitary DEcision “Donating my eggs or accepting someone else’s — it is a big decision. Right now, I am not in the position to judge, but whatever decision I make would be after consulting my loved ones. I am single right now, so donating eggs is something I will like to talk about with my parents. And as far as accepting donated eggs, I would discuss it with my husband. It doesn’t seem like a bad idea, but it is not solely my decision to make.” — Arwa Kaka, 29-years-old happy to hElp “I don’t mind donating my eggs to someone who really needs them. I’d love to help someone in such a way. Of course, I will go ahead with the
step only if it doesn’t hamper my relationship with my loved ones. It’s great for women who want children , but can’t have them. I would only do this to help women, not to make money. In fact, I don't even care if there
accEpting Donations “Had I wanted to accept someone else’s genetic material, I would choose to adopt. There are so many children who need a family, and I would be happy to oblige. In fact, adoption is an option that I have in mind, if I am unable to conceive in future. I think it’s a much more sensible option.” — Samidha Sawant, 34-years-old

ask our beauty expert barbara, our beauty expert, will help fix your problems
Dear barbara, I have always had healthy hair and have never had any serious hair problems either. However, I have been noticing a pattern. My hair becomes dry and sheds between seasons. I would like to know if the change in season can be the reason behind my hair problems. Also, with the monsoon approaching, what can I do to prevent excessive shedding? — shraddha makhija, vashi Dear shraddha, Seasonal hair fall is a fairly common occurrence. Like skin, our hair needs to adapt to different seasons and weather conditions. Rain water mixes with pollutants can hamper the health of your hair. To avoid this, you need to prep your hair first! Make sure you not only oil, but massage your hair regularly. There is no alternative to a good coconut or almond oil. Next, pay attention to your hair’s moisture. Use water-based hair products and avoid making your hair greasy. Lastly, take a break from curlers and flat iron as heat damages your hair. Instead, experiment with braids or plaits.
Lip service MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015
From the controversial lip challenge to the debate surrounding how she got them, reality TV star Kylie Jenner’s plump lips have been a really hot topic. Yamini Walia tells you about the mistakes people are making when they try to achieve the same full-lipped look
W
e agree that plump, luscious lips look great. Your lipstick sits better, you can experiment with lip liners — the possibilities are endless! However, going to any length to achieve the look might be taking it a little too far. Kylie Jenner, who at just 17-years-old is the pioneer of this trend, only recently admitted to have undergone injections to enhance her pout — after much speculation and denial, of course. But, since most star-struck youngsters want to look like the reality star, they’ve resorted to extreme measures to mimic them. Dr. Apratim Goel, dermatologist and laser surgeon at Cutis Skin Studio, tells us, “In this case, it’s a typical case of blind celebrity following and media misguidance. She initially denied having undergone any procedures but later admitted to having fillers. However, several media reports claimed that she used a temporary suction device called Candylipz to create vacuum assisted swellings and redness.” Read on as we shed some light on the mistakes that people are making.
>> The craze surrounding plumper lips has led to a rise in lip fillers and other harmful methods
lack of research No surgery/ treatment should be undertaken without proper research. Dr. Apratim says, “What people are doing wrong is blindly following claims without checking with dermatologists who are trained for this. That vacuum device creates swollen blisters on your lips and can cause them to bleed. Your lips not only look disfigured but the procedure is also painful.”
abrasive materials Dear barbara, Lately, I have been thinking about opting for a laser hair removal treatment. Waxing and shaving damages my skin and makes the hair on my body dense. Is there anything I should know before undergoing the treatment. — malvika Gosian, andheri Dear malvika, Laser hair removal treatments are becoming a popular option among women. To avoid waxing or tweezing of unwanted hair, an increasing number of women are looking for a permanent solution. However, before undergoing the treatment, make sure that you consult your dermatologist. If you have (or have had) any skin problems discuss it with them just to be sure. You should also know because laser treatments target the roots of your hair, avoid waxing or shaving six weeks prior to the treatment as they temporarily remove the roots. Sunlight too makes the laser treatment less effective. Hence, make sure you limit your exposure to the sun for at least six weeks before and after your treatment.
There’s a thin line between wanting something and becoming desperate for it. To get big lips, some people are also resorting to desperate measures such as using abrasive materials including brick powder, acid, and irritants such as chilli extracts. Dr. Apratim explains, “Apart from producing inflammation, such procedures, can even induce cancerous changes if repeated too many times.”
little awareness Most people don’t know what they want. This obviously stems from a lack of research, and they have little awareness about the topic. Dr. Geeta Oberoi, dermatologist, managing director at Skin & You Clinic at Nariman Point, tells us, “We have to understand that our lips are designed according to our facial proportions. When patients want fuller lips or better pouts after looking at other people, they lose sight of their own facial features and proportions.”
Go the natural way While you can pick invasive procedures after consulting a dermatologist, natural methods to achieve them are always more reliable and pose less of a risk n Try brushing your lips with a toothbrush (be gentle!) to remove dead skin. Apply a mosituriser or lip balm to restore softness. n Wearing a dramatic red or pink lipstick will make your lips appear fuller and more prominent. Increase this effect by using lipstick and lip liner together. n Use various remedies such as lip plumpers, and hydrants to hydrate your lips. n A lip-plumping lip gloss is also a good investment if you want to make your lips appear fuller. It increases blood circulation by irritating the skin slightly. The result is a subtle, temporary swelling and reddening of the lips, making them look fuller and plumper.

Headline inflation continues to remain in the negative terrain for the seventh consecutive month. Coming on the back of the marginal rise in retail inflation, the insignificant increase in WPI is along expected lines. The marginal rise in the WPI number is on account of a slight uptrend of fuel and manufacturing prices even as food prices have eased during the month. The further softening of food prices during the month dispels the possibility of an upside risk to inflation in the near future accruing from forecasts of deficient monsoons. What is more, the administrative measures taken by the government to rein in inflation, which includes ensuring the adequacy of food-stocks, provides hope that inflation would continue to remain range bound and within the specified RBI’s target. This should propel the RBI to continue with its rate easing cycle to support demand and strengthen the nascent recovery in industrial production.

May Inflation In Negative Zone For 7th Month
Inflation remained in negative territory for the seventh month in May, registering a decline of 2.36% on account of subdued prices of food items, fuel and manufactured goods. In the coming months however the price situation will depend on the progress of monsoon, experts said. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation was (-)2.65% in April. It has been in the negative zone since November 2014. Inflation in last May was 6.18%.The lower inflation comes amid a forecast of deficient monsoon this year. In contrast to IMD's forecast of 12% deficient rainfall, the onset of monsoon has been reasonably strong so far. Citigroup said that overall the monsoon is still a risk factor but "we expect CPI (retail inflation) to undershoot RBI's Jan-16 projection by 40bps and average 5% in 2015-16. This is likely to create room for further 25 bps cut in current fiscal".

DFC Bank has launched PayZapp, a payment solution that will revolutionize the way payments and purchases are done onthe-go today using mobile devices. Through the downloaded payments can be done with one click for all spends, from mobile phone topups, to instant money transfers, to bill payments, to groceries, to movie tickets, to even big-ticket purchases such as foreign holidays. According to the bank “Within PayZapp is SmartBuy, a virtual mega marketplace that has every type of product available, from those that fulfill daily requirements to those that meet aspirational needs, just the way a mall has”. The launch of Payzapp is the latest initiative in HDFC Bank's digital banking offering christened #GoDigital. It aligns with the Bank’s core digital theme of ‘Bank aapki muthi mein’, which places the power of banking in the hands of the customer. Speaking about the new launch, Parag Rao, Business Head, Cards, Payment Products and Merchant Acquiring Services said, “PayZapp is pathbreaking. For the customer, whose world has now converged on his mobile device, this innovation will mean that he'll be able to complete every type of payment and purchase from a single App with a single PIN, whenever and wherever he wants, without worrying about prepayment and re-loading. Like all our innovations, the genesis of this platform is customer convenience. As part of our Bank aap ki muththi mein initiative, this product is another major digital leap. In fact, the customer will find it is not only the #Powerofbanking which is in his muththi, but effectively the whole world.”
Banks’ Association (IBA) Commenting on the launch the index, Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII said “Sound financial conditions in an economy play an intrinsic role in determining monetary stability and thus proper functioning of the financial economy. Due to a strong positive correlation between the financial and real economy, it becomes an imperative to gauge the prevailing and projected financial situation vis-à-vis the macro-economic scenario on a continuous basis. The CII-IBA Financial Conditions Index is a significant step in this direction”. Highlighting the key objectives of introducing the Index, Arun Kaul, Deputy Chairman, IBA and Chairman & Managing Director, UCO Bank said that the CII-IBA Financial Conditions Index will: Serve as a key indicator in assessing the short term financial conditions in the Indian economy; Provide effective monitoring of current financial conditions for facilitating regulatory and policy decisions; Provide early
signals on turning points in financial conditions, and Help track credit flow conditions for industry and service sectors from various channels. The Financial Conditions Index with presently standing at 74.1, exhibits a positive outlook with signs of firm improvement in the prevailing financial conditions of the Indian economy in the first quarter of FY 2015-16.The improvement is expected on account of sound performance on Cost of Funds Index and Funding Liquidity Index. Further, the External Financial Linkages Index and Economic Activity Index also indicate improvement albeit at a relatively moderate level. In terms of categories of respondents, the Foreign Banks were most optimistic for improvement in the financial conditions in Q1 FY 201516 followed by Private Sector Banks, Co-operative Banks, and Public Sector Banks whereas NBFCs were most conservative in their expectation of improvement in the financial conditions.
Abundant Jobs For Freshers Likely In Jul-Sep Quarter Sector-wise, IT, telecom, healthcare and hospitality space have led the demand growth for entry-level candidates By A Business Reporter
T
he demand for entry-level professionals is likely to see a significant uptrend in the coming three months and hiring is set to peak for e-commerce players in the July-September quarter, according to job portal TimesJobs.Com. An analysis of TimesJobs.Com RecruiteX data since 2011 shows that demand for entry-level talent has seen an incremental spike during July-September, and this trend is likely to continue this year as well. Since 2011, the demand for candidates with zero to two years of experience registered a significant rise of 6% on an average between July and September. Demand during last two years - 2013 and 2014 rose further to an average of 7%, TimesJobs.Com said. Interestingly, demand for entry-level candidates during July-September has never been negative in the past five years, unlike demand for more experienced candidates. Many big corporate players plan to hire big during the July-September period to take advantage of this trend. Hiring is also set to peak in this period for e-commerce players, the report said. The primary reason for this spike is that not only the bonus payout, even salary increments usually come into effect from April in most Indian companies. "The first quarter helps job-seekers build the requisite documents, such as two to three months pay-
slips, increment letters, etc. For applying for a new job." TimesJobs.Com COO Vivek Madhukar said. Moreover, campus placements, which usually take place around July to September, also push new talent demand during this period, he added. Sector-wise, IT, telecom, healthcare and hospitality space have led the demand growth for entry-level candidates during these three months, registering a rise of 3% on an average since 2011.

arathi films with children as their central characters have been high grossers at the BO. Balak Palak (BP), directed by Ravi Jadhav highlighted the importance of sex education for adolescents. This was followed by directorproducer Shrirang Godbole's ‘Chintoo 2’ Sujay Dahake's teenage-love story ‘Shaala’ (2011), Mangesh Hadawale's Tingya (2008) The list includes Akshay Kumar's debut Marathi production '72 Miles' directed by Rajiv Patil, Shivaji Lotan Patil's National Award winning film 'Dhag', Nagraj Manjule's 'Fandry', Laxman Utekar's 'Tapaal' (written by Hadawale) and Nitin Dixit's Avtarachi Goshta and the recent National Award winning film ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’ directed by Paresh Mokashi. So what makes these films click? Hadawale says, "A child's character connects well with the audience because there is a lot of innocence involved. This works in favour of the film." Director Dahake of 'Shaala' shares similar thoughts: "Any filmmaker tries to bring sympathy to the hero of his film. Children usually
Children based films, a formula to success appeal to our sensitive side; they make films more relatable." Another aspect that works in favor of these films is that children form a major chunk of the audience, say filmmakers. "That's because they don't walk in alone so families come to watch these films," says filmmaker Suhrud Godbole. Manjule says, "My target audience is not only children. Films with children have to be handled maturely and sensibly." Manva Naik whose ‘Por Bazaar’ was a Famous Five kind of adventure film says, “I and my mother Meena Naik do a lot of
Taranath's memory by presenting a rhythm ensemble They played the 16 beat teen taal and had the audience transfixed for well over an hour. It was a fitting tribute to the late tabla guru. Nagbhushan Hegde, a senior pupil of the Karnataka based vocalist Ganapati Bhat gave a good account of himself under the auspices of 'Kalabharati'. Singers who hail from north Karnataka have powerful voices. It could be the soil and the environment which is congenial to nurturing the basic talent. Nagbhushan sang khyals in 'Todi' and 'Sarang'. It was an impressive performance which was appreciated by the Sunday morning audience.
children’s theatre and therefore I thought of making a children based film and I don’t think there is any trend or such because only a few films are recently making it big and my next film will be a crime thriller. I also think today’s directors are well versed with world cinema and hence they make intelligent films”. Avinash Arun whose ‘Killa’ produced by Essel Vision is about to release says, “It’s just a coincidence that my film is a children based film as I wanted to share my childhood experiences with the audiences and not because of any trend as such”. They say that in a scene the child actor steals the scene and now they are conquering the box office too!
Media and politics are strange bedfellows! By Sandeep Hattangadi
S
hyam Jagdale (Sachin Khedekar) is a honest and a conscientious journalist who writes a column ‘Nagrik’ in a leading newspaper and wants to break the lid of communal politics and the riots which are engineered by power hungry politicians like Vikas Patil (Milind Soman) and veteran leader (Shreeram Lagoo) in which many innocent lives are lost but nothing changes at the top and the communal minority card is often played by those in power. Shyam faces the wrath of his editor who is worried about the ad revenue he gets from the perpetrators of the riots and Shyam thinks of quitting his job with the encouragement of his cancer stricken wife (Devika Daftardar). He gets a good job in a news channel with the help of his good friends, a well
meaning minority leader (Madhav Abhyankar) and a mature builder businessman (Rajesh Sharma) who are his drinking pals. Finally, Shyam in spite of his ideals compromises. Sachin Khedekar’s award winning performance is the highlight of the film. His expressions and dialogue delivery is excellent and the dialogues given to
him are also of a high standard. Dilip Prabhavalkar as the wily Chief Minister gives a superb performance. Shriram Lagoo as the nonagenarian veteran leader is superb. Devika Daftardar as Khedekar’s wife gives a good account of herself. Milind Soman in a rare negative role is good. Neena Kulkarni as the social worker leader is very good. Director Jayprad Desai has given the audiences a rare powerful film. His sense of screenplay is very good and the story by Mahesh Keluskar has been adapted by him for the screen very well. Madhav Abhyankar, Rajesh Sharma, Sulabha Deshpande, Vikas Desai, lend good support. The music and background music by Tubby-Parik is good, especially the songs sung by folk artiste Sambhaji Bhagat. All in all, a film that makes you think about the role of media in the present day politics!

Avoid arguments. If you get involved in a verbal duel you may have regrets later. Try to listen rather than speak out and repent.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): A good idea is worth working on. Do not be self conscious about your efforts or they will look contrived. Responses from colleagues and associates will be favorable. What your do now will have a bearing on the future and your plans. At home elders will be more amiable to your views and may even support you if you can be more tactful.

KOHLI OPEN TO ‘DISCUSSIONS ON DRS’ WITH TEAMMATES SPORTS
Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015
F
ATULLAH: In a departure from the stand taken by his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has said that he is open to discussions on the implementation of the controversial Decision Review System with his teammates. While Dhoni has always maintained that DRS is not foolproof and it still requires significant upgradation, Kohli feels that the contentious system can at least be discussed. "You have to sit and analyse and ask the bowlers what they feel about it. Ask the batters what they feel about that. We literally just came into this Test match with very less time on hand. So now that we have time, I am sure these discussions will take place," Kohli has said. Kohli's stance is not quite consistent with the BCCI's adamant refusal to accept DRS when N Srinivasan was its President even though some Test-playing nations such as Australia, England and New Zealand have already started using it. The ICC has maintained that it wants a consistent usage of the system but would not force any member Board to adopt it. "We have always said that we would like to have the same rules for everybody as far as DRS is concerned and implement it on a uniform, consistent basis," ICC CEO Dave Richardson haD said earlier. "The fact is though one of our members doesn't want DRS, they have a number of concerns regarding DRS. The major one being in their
view the principle of a player reviewing an umpire's decision goes against the grain of what the spirit of cricket is all about."
DHAWAN, VIJAY RISE, KOHLI SLIPS IN ICC TEST RANKINGS DUBAI: Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay achieved career-best positions but skipper Virat Kohli dropped out of the ICC rankings' top-10 after the drawn one-off cricket Test against Bangladesh in Fatullah. Vijay has moved up three places to 20th, while Dhawan
OUTHAMPTON: New Zealand's Kane Williamson was happy to prove elegance and timing still had a place when batting in one-day international cricket with a brilliant century in a three-wicket win over England on Sunday. Victory at the Rose Bowl saw World Cup finalists New Zealand go 2-1 up in the fivematch series. The Black Caps, chasing 303 for victory, were wobbling at 36 for two. But a New Zealand record third-wicket stand of 206 between Williamson (118) and Ross Taylor (110), ultimately proved decisive.
There have long been anguished debates about whether advances in bat technology and modern-day power-hitting are making ODI cricket too much of a batsmen's game. But the 24-year-old Williamson proved the traditional virtues of touch and timing remain effective in white-ball cricket. Indeed his final scoring shot, in a sublime 113-ball innings which included 12 fours, was a seemingly effortless straight six off David Willey. "I don't think aggressive has to mean slogging or hitting the ball 150 metres," said
after Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the number-one spot in the rankings for Test batsmen after stellar batting displays in the Kingston Test, which Australia won by 277 runs to win the series 2-0. Despite missing out on what would have been his first double century in his 28th Test, Smith has leapfrogged Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka and South Africa duo of AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla following scores of 199 and 54 not out in the latest rankings.
There is a big gap in our bowling: Mushfiqur
Fatullah: Furious with his bowlers for conceding over 400 runs in the rain-hit oneoff cricket Test against India, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim said their approach made it difficult for him to even set the field for the rival batsmen. Even after more than 250 overs of play lost during the entire duration of the match, India gave the hosts a hard time by bundling them out for 256 post declaring their first innings on 462 for six. Mushfiqur said that it is high time his bowlers match up to international standards. "In countries like Australia and England by the time a bowler comes to this level, he is expected to be able to tell the captain what his plan is or how he wants to set up a batsman so that the captain can set a field. We have a big gap in that area.
Ton-up Williamson happy to play his way S
has vaulted 15 places to 45th. Ajinkya Rahane is the other notable mover and despite missing out on a century, he has climbed up four places to a career-high 22nd to date, the ICC said in a statement. However, Kohli has slipped a rung to 11th. In the bowlers' chart, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan have gained one place each and are now 12th and 16th, respectively. Meanwhile, Australia's Steven Smith became the second youngest batsman
29
man-of-the-match Williamson, who also bowled England captain Eoin Morgan for 71 with his off-spin. "I think the style of play is what you want to achieve in an innings and the runs you want to get and that dictates who's picked," added Williamson following his seventh hundred in 77 matches at this level. "Most teams have a balance of players who contribute to that and we're no different." New Zealand suffered a setback before this match when in-form paceman Trent Boult was ruled out of the rest of the tour with a back injury.
Bowling on either side of the wicket doesn't help," said Mushfiqur in the post-match press conference here yesterday. "A bowler needs to be consistent so that we can set a field. If we set a field for full length deliveries and he bowls a short-pitched delivery, the captain may look foolish," he added. With four specialist spinners in the side, Shakib
Al Hasan (4-105) and Jubair Hossain (2-113) shared six wickets between them as the the rest of the bowling lineup failed to stop the Indian run-flow. "One can't just leak runs at four or four and a half runs an over. It becomes difficult to comeback from there. If an opponent scores 300 to 350 runs in a day, it becomes difficult," said Mushfiqur. Indian spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin (5-87) and Harbhajan Singh (3-64), made their presence felt as Bangladesh batsmen were guilty of getting out to reckless shots. Mushfiqur also admitted the team's batting failure. "It's a big crime when a batsman gets out after scoring 30 or 40 runs on this kind of a wicket. It gets difficult," said the wicketkeeper-batsman.
Put pressure on opponents from start, coach Van Ass to players A
NTWERP (BELGIUM): Indian men's hockey team's chief coach Paul van Ass feels from the word go the Sardar Singh-led side needs to put pressure on the opponents in order to secure positive results in the FIH World League Semifinals to be held here from June 20 to July 5. The Dutchman stressed on the need to score early goals to put pressure on their rivals. "The practice matches were a huge learning for the team. While we won the match against France we narrowly lost to Belgium.
But what came out for me from the matches was that we have to increase the pressure on the opponents from the start," Van Ass said. "We need to work on getting more penalty corners apart from looking at the capitalising on opportunities inside the opposition circle. "While the boys did a good job in the practice matches in breaking the opposition defence, they need to ensure they yield results. Getting the initial goal in our name will help us build the pressure," he added.
MEN BEHIND THE MAIDANS SPORTS
As the skies open up, the Mumbai groundsmen start-off the rigourous work of relaying the grounds and improving the quality of wickets every year By Gaurav Dudhane
M
UMBAI: The maidans of Mumbai have produced cricketing stalwarts over the years, but every success story has a beginning which begins at most of the maidans in the city. It's been two weeks since the offseason has commenced and during the next three months, a small group of groundsmen will toil hard to create wickets which will be used from October to May next year. Their rigorous work involves rolling the pitch, mowing grass, trimming the hedges, pulling weeds - all of which is a year long job, but as the rains come gushing down there is a task which awaits them – the Kanga League. However, with plenty of ambiguity about whether the league will take place this year, none of these curators are taking a chance. 64 year old, Dar Sinar who is based in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh has made Azad Maidan his home for the past 16 years. “Their are a total of 22 wickets at Azad Maidan with groups of three working on each wicket.
Groundsmen start their preparatory work prior to the commencement of the monsoons in Mumbai recently. We prepare wickets by digging a pit measuring one foot deep and fill it with rocks and red soil (laterite soil) and bind it by sprinkling water. It's hard work here and the pay is paltry,” said Sinar. He added that all the workers are paid the same amount despite their seniority. “We have been appointed by contracters and despite working hard we are paid a small amount between Rs. 50006000 a month.” At the peak of their work season Sinar said they have already begun sowing grass and working on wickets. “We have already sown grass and then roll the area with a roller. In the rainy season the grass grows quickly. We have to get
the wickets ready for Kanga League which begins in July.” Barely a mile away, trucks are being moved in various part of the maidan with soil loaded in them. Lalit Ram, who hails from village Darbhanga, Bihar was called upon by his relative Manoj Ram to work at the Oval Maidan nearly a decade ago. Since then there was no going back for this labourer. Lalit said most of the workers resort to using traditional tools for making pitches as compared to their foreign counterparts. “We are poor people. We can't afford modern equipments. We use traditional cutters which are reliable and easy to use and maintain and do not cost much,” said Lalit.
Living on the maidans for a fair amount of time, most of these groundsmen feel their thankless jobs for which they have been toiling hard, reaps dividends when former players visit them and offer them their best wishes. “Many great players have grown up playing here but after they reach the big stage they forget us. Sachin who grew up playing here, visits often and calls every gardener and worker and gives them respect. Not everyone shows such respect. Everyone takes pride in naming their club but they don’t show respect for gardeners here. After they become great they only see their own needs,” said Sinar.

MCA voters’ list faulty, says Mumbai lad Armaan Gala wins gold in Italy Junior Chess M ex-office bearer Mandrekar MUMBAI: With the highly politicised biennial elections of the Mumbai Cricket Association round the corner, one of the voting club's representative has termed the voters' list as faulty as it contained clubs which no longer exist. Former MCA office bearer Ravi Mandrekar has cited minutes of the association's Affiliation Sub Committee which show that seven clubs have shut shop or ceased cricket activities and needed to be weeded out of the electoral rolls or else the election process could be challenged in a court of law. The elections, slated to be held on June 17, have already acquired a heavy political slant with the hegemony of NCP supremo and incumbent President Sharad Pawar being challenged by outgoing VP Vijay Patil for the President's post with the full backing of the Shiv Sena. Among those contesting from the Pawar-Bal Mahaddalkar ruling panel is BJP MLA Ashish Shelar, who is contesting the two Vice
President's post along with Sena MP Pratap Sarnaik, who is fighting the elections as part of Vijay Patil's "Cricket First" group. Mandrekar said as per the minutes of the meeting of the sub-committee, the offices of two of these, Golden Tobacco and Indo Burman Petroleum, have shut shop, three other clubs - DMC, JK and Reptakos - have written to MCA that they had stopped their cricket activities, Indian Airlines has merged with Air India which is already a member of MCA while chairman had informed the panel that Mafatlal SC has closed down. "Therefore I appeal to you that the voter list prepared by Association is faulty and names of following 7 clubs should be removed from voters list," Mandrekar has stated in the letter. "I hope you will take appropriate action before election and declare that names of above seven voters have been removed from voter List.
UMBAI: Mumbai's Armaan Gala continuing with his recent success in Europe added another title to his name winning a prestigious gold medal in the Under-16 category at the XXVI Annual Lucca International Championships which concluded at Palazzo Gunigi in Lucca, Italy on Sunday. Armaan finished with with a tally of 4.5 points out of possible 5. A ninth student of Oberoi International School and a trainee of the South Mumbai Chess Academy
(SMCA), 15-year-old Armaan is the first and only player from Maharashtra to clinch this coveted title. According to a media release from the Mumbai City District Chess Association (MCDCA), this is Armaan's second international title within a fortnight following his under 18 title in the Group B category at Weiz International chess championships in Austria last week. In the under-16 category, a total of 26 players were in the fray. Armaan, with an ELO of 1551 was the top seed of the
championship followed by Vecoli Martina (ELO 1539) and Bechelli Flavio (1518) of Italy. In the fourth and fifth round, Armaan held both the players convincingly and went on to lift the title by remaining unbeaten in this championship. Armaan’s fourth round game with Vecoli Martina left Armaan in a very superior position until Armaan turned the game strikingly on his side by launching a brilliant attack on the queen side with the pawns storm and finally forced her to resign.

AINE (FRANCE): Ace Indian racer Karun Chandhok led his team, Murphy Prototypes, to an impressive fifth place finish at the historic Le Mans 24-Hours in the LMP2 Class. The team was running as high as third place but suffered problems and eventually settled for a strong 5th position in the world's most famous endurance race. Chandhok, who is supported by JK Tyre, AVT Premium, Sidvin and Tag Heuer,
did not feel the team was fast enough for a podium finish. "It's a hard race to finish and I'm pleased for the whole team to have achieved it. Although we had a few problems, I think we may have only gained one place if we hadn't. This would have still not seen us on the podium and that's what we were aiming for of course," Chandhok said. "I think that as a team, we are getting the best out of the car and therefore, this weekend represented a great effort
all round. I would like to give a special mention to my sponsors who continue to help me in achieving my dream." Once the grid had been cleared, Nathanaël Berthon was the first of the three Murphy Prototypes' drivers to get behind the wheel of the team's Nissan-powered Oreca 03R prototype and a clear getaway by the whole field saw Nathanaël holdingstation to his grid position: 8th in class and 18th overall.

T
EMUCO: Brazil captain Neymar scored once and set up an injury-time winner as the five-time world champions scraped a 2-1 win over Peru on Sunday after Colombia suffered a shock defeat to Venezuela. Neymar headed in a fifthminute equaliser before creating a goal for team-mate Douglas Costa deep into stoppage time to seal Brazil's 11th consecutive victory since last year's World Cup. "This is a very tough competition," Neymar said afterwards as he collected a man-of-the-match award. "We got the win and that's important." Neymar has now reached 44 international goals at the age of 23, a year earlier than Brazil-
ian legend Pele. "I want to keep on reaching records, with goals, assists and everything that can help the team to win," Neymar said. The Brazilian star was at the centre of the action throughout the game, even getting a bizarre yellow card for pushing aside the foam the referee had sprayed on the pitch to show where a free kick should be taken. Brazil coach Dunga praised the contribution of his captain. "Neymar was again decisive," Dunga said. "He's played three finals in Spain (with Barcelona), and he's had a long season. But he comes here and takes responsibility for sorting out our problems." Peru, who took the lead after only three minutes when

A second-half goal from Russian-based striker Salomon Rondon settled a hardfought encounter in Rancagua as the highly-rated Colombians struggled to break down the Venezuelans. Despite a starting line-up packed with star names from Europe's strongest leagues, including James Rodriguez from Real Madrid, Manchester United's Radamel Falcao and Chelsea's Juan Cuadrado, Colombia were never able to impose their attacking style on the contest. Venezuela's goal came after a quick throw caught Colombia's defence off guard. Juan Arango improvised a first-time cross across the box to Alejandro Guerra, who headed back into the path of Rondon. AGATNA (GUAM): In keeping with coach Stephen Constantine's new rotational captaincy policy, prolific striker Sunil Chhetri has been handed the armband as India aim for full points against a motivated Guam in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers here today. While India went down 1-2 after a spirited fight to higher-ranked Oman in their previous preliminary joint qualification round 2, Guam created history with an upset solitary goal win over Turkmenistan. India gave plenty of hope in their last outing and will be looking to take some aspects of their style of play, moving forward, from the game at the Kanteerva Stadium. As far as the team combination is concerned, Constantine is unlikely to tinker with the line-up. Chhetri and Robin Singh will lead the attack. Jackichand's Royal Wahingdoh teammate Seityasen Singh may also be introduced on the right side. The midfield combo of Sehnaj Singh and Eugeneson Lyngdoh will have a lot riding on them as well. England's Wayne Rooney is challenged by Slovenia's Bojan Jokic during the Euro 2016 Group E qualifying match between Slovenia and England in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Sunday.
Spain grind out win, Rooney the late hero for England P
ARIS: Reigning European champions Spain closed in on a place at Euro 2016 by grinding out a 1-0 qualifying win over Belarus as Wayne Rooney's late goal gave England victory in Slovenia. Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck a brace as Sweden beat Montenegro yesterday but Russia were the day's big losers, a defeat to Austria coming as a blow to their prospects of reaching the finals in France in a year's time. England are on a fast track to Euro 2016 having won six games out of six in qualifying Group E, although they needed an 86th-minute winner from Rooney to secure victory in Ljubljana. Milivoje Novakovic gave Slovenia the lead in the 37th minute at the Stozice Stadium before Jack Wilshere broke his international duck with a pair of brilliant, almost identical secondhalf goals to put England ahead. Slovenia substitute Nejc Pecnik appeared to have rescued a point with an 84th-minute equaliser, but moments later Rooney atoned for two glaring earlier misses by scoring his 48th England goal, taking him level with Gary Lineker and leaving him one goal behind all-time leading scorer Bobby Charlton. "It's great to score the winner, but it was a great team performance," captain Rooney told ITV. England are six points clear at the top of the section from Switzerland, who came from behind to beat Lithuania 2-1 in Vilnius. Fiodor Cernych put the home side ahead in the second half but Josip Drmic equalised soon after for the Swiss before Xherdan Shaqiri of Inter Milan got the winning goal six minutes from time. In the group's other game, Sergei Zenjov scored two goals either side of halftime as Estonia defeated minnows San Marino -England's next opponents in September -- 2-0 in
Tallinn. Meanwhile, Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 winners Spain made it five victories from six games in Group C by beating Belarus 1 -0 at the Borisov Arena in Barysaw. Manchester City's David Silva got the only goal of the game in Vicente del Bosque's 100th match in charge of La Roja, controlling a Cesc Fabregas freekick at the back post and volleying in. It is Slovakia who top the section, however, after they made it six wins out of six by downing Macedonia 2-1 in Zilina. Kornel Salata and Napoli star Marek Hamsik scored for the Slovaks, with Arijan Ademi getting one back for the visitors, who had forward Feran Hasani sent off late on. Spain and Slovakia meet in early September, while third- placed Ukraine are not out of the running after second-half goals from Artem Kravets, Denys Garmash and the excellent Yevhen Konoplyanka secured a 3-0 win over Luxembourg in Lviv. In Group G, Russia's hopes of qualifying were dealt a blow as Fabio Capello's side slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Austria. Giant striker Marc Janko scored the only goal of the game for the Austrians with a spectacular overhead kick in the 33rd minute at Spartak Moscow's Otkrytie Arena as they extended their lead at the top of the section. After six games, unbeaten Austria -- whose only previous European Championship appearance came as co-hosts in 2008 -- are top with 16 points, four points clear of Sweden, with Russia a further four points adrift in third, which is likely to bring with it a play-off place. Fabio Capello, the coach of the 2018 World Cup hosts, seemed to blame his team's performance on the "pedestrian" pace of the game in Russia.
