Two H1N1 deaths in city

he civic health department recorded two H1N1 deaths inthe past four days. According to the department, the two latest deaths were of patients who suffered from critical conditions which led to speedy decline in their medical factors.

The civic body is now concentrating on early diagnosis and treatment to stabilise patients before their condition worsens.

It has been observed that almost 90 per cent of those detected with H1N1 virus are getting cured within a week, but few cases get complicated since they suffer from other illnesses such as dia-

betes, hypertension, cancer or low immunity.

The deaths reported recently are of a 32-year-old female resident of Juhu, who was admitted in hospital on July 13th and died on July 16th.

The other deceased is also a 32year-old woman, from Worli, who was admitted to Global Hospital, Parel and died on July 16th.

BMC dismantles, then re-installs open air gym at Marine Drive

t was an embarrassing situation for the BMC. They first dismantled the open air gym inaugurated

by Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray on Wednesday reinstalling it just hours later.

The open air gym was installed at NS Road (Marine Drive promenade), much to the annoyance of the citizens living there. A set of many gym equipments were installed and inaugurated by the Yuva Sena Chief along with actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Dino Morea. Morea had written to the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee to open fitness stations on the stretch of Girgaum chowpatty.

The committee though, complained that they had not been informed about it.

On Thursday morning, the ward level team reached the venue and dismantled all the equipment.

Later, on learning that all necessary permissions had been granted, the BMC workers went back and repaired the damage done by reinstalling all the equipment. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray reacted sharply to this, and the mayor of the city also supported his comment. Mayor Snehal Ambekar, agreeing with Sena chief said, “Our chief has said the right thing. These people who dismantled the gym equipments do not know how to exercise and they will be taught how to.”

It was later revealed that there was a miscommunication at the ward level and the ward officer admitted her mistake later. Aditya Thackeray later tweeted that it was the ward officer's fault and she was not aware that the necessary permissions had been obtained. The BMC has apologised and renistalled the gym equipment at their own expense.

Pluto has 11,000 feet high, young ice mountains

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which successfully made a historic flyby of Pluto, has discovered young ice mountains on the dwarf planet which are as high as 11,000 feet and about 100 million years old.

New close-up images of a region near Pluto's equator show a range of youthful mountains rising as high as 11,000 feet (3,500 meters) above the surface of the icy body. The mountains likely formed no more than 100 million years ago - mere youngsters relative to the 4.56-billion-year age of the solar system - and may still be in the process of building.

That suggests the close-up region, which covers less than one per cent of Pluto's surface, may still be geologically active today, researchers said. Like the rest of Pluto, this region would presumably have been pummelled by space debris for billions of years and would have once been heavily

cratered - unless recent activity had given the region a face-lift, erasing those pockmarks.

This is one of the youngest surfaces we've ever seen in the solar system.

Unlike the icy moons of giant planets, Pluto cannot be heated by gravitational interactions with a much larger planetary body. Some other process must be generating the mountainous landscape. This may cause us to rethink what powers geological activity on many other icy worlds.

Although methane and nitrogen ice covers much of the surface of Pluto, these materials are not strong enough to build the mountains. Instead, a stiffer material, most likely water-ice, created the peaks. The closeup image was taken about 1.5 hours before New Horizons closest approach to Pluto, when the craft was 77,000 kilometres from the surface of the dwarf planet.

New device predicts earthquake, tsunami

A new device that you can keep in your house can warn you when an earthquake or tsunami is detected in the local area. The Brinco - a small, round, flat, metallic cylinder - is a networked seismic warning and monitoring system with an accompanying mobile app.

The Brinco connects to an international seismograph network and is able to provide users with voice, flashing light and alarm alerts when an earthquake or tsunami is detected in the local area.

Brinco can provide five, ten, even 30 seconds or more notice of when an earthquake will hit your home or office.

Tsunami warnings can arrive up to several hours in advance.

When the network detects the initial first wave of an earthquake that is relatively nondestructive, the information is relayed to the Brinco and an alert delivered.

From the initial detected wave, it is possible to calculate when the second, more destructive slow waves will hit and, thus, the warnings can be tailored. If only a slight tremor is detected, a yellow light is shown with the voice message, "Slight tremor expected in xx seconds. No damage expected." A dangerous quake triggers a red light accompanied by the voice message, "Earthquake expected in xx seconds. Take cover or go outside now."

Each Brinco is also a seismograph. The devices collect seismic information for their location and send it to national and regional seismic networks around the world, as well as the Brinco network itself. The more Brincos that are deployed, the more accurate and powerful the Brinco network will become.

Shooting at Dadar mall to scare developer?

n a shocking incident, an unidentified man on Wednesday evening opened fire outside Dadar's Cosmos Mall. The man who fired two rounds fled the spot immediately after the incident but the act was caught on CCTV camera.

Post incident, Dadar police visited the site and recovered all possible evidence

from the crime venue.

Sources said, “The man, who is captured on CCTV, was wearing a cap during the incident. However, his face was not too clear in the recovered images .”

Three persons were detained from western suburbs on Thursday for their alleged involvement in the case.

However, prima facie the case looks like the firing was done to scare a particular

person, who lives near the mall.

The man who had fired two rounds had told the security guard to call up a person naming Sandeep.

A case has been registered at Dadar police station against an unidentified person. The shots were fired at a hotel, which hit the wall and a table in the premises of the botel.

Panhale got a call from Babulnath temple that there is a baby cobra inside the temple, so he rushed to the temple and rescued the baby cobra. After a while Panhale received another call from Wadala station road where a snake was noticed by the locals. He then rescued this snake too, which was later identified as the Banded Racer, a rare species.

he Kashimira police have got the custody of a 22 year-old fraudster who was recently arrested by their Mumbai counterparts for his involvement in multiple cases of debit card frauds in the region. According to the police, the accused identified as Salman Hanif Khan, alias Rohit Sharma (22) hails from Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh.

he Administrative Court of Portugal has written to extradited gangster Abu Salem, asking him to amend his petition and make the External Affairs Ministry of Portugal and the Attorney General of Portugal the respondents.

Salem, deported to India in 2005, has moved the Administrative Court seeking a direction to the Portugal government to execute the order cancelling his extradition.

In January 2012, Portugal's Supreme Court had upheld lower court's order which cancelled Salem's deportation for 'violation' of extradition treaty by Indian authorities which pressed charges attracting death penalty against him.

Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005, after a prolonged legal battle. On February 16 this year, a court here convicted him for the murder of citybased builder Pradeep Jain and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Mistaken for thief, youth stoned to death in Bhiwandi A

28-year-old youth was stoned to death allegedly by three persons, who mistook him to a thief, at a quarry in Phule Nagar area of Bhiwandi town, police said on Thursday.

The victim, identified as Shivshankar S Bansode, along with a couple of friends yesterday went near a nonoperational quarry where there was a natural pond for

fishing, reports PTI. However, Surej Patil, a relative of the quarry owner, mistook him to be a thief following which he and his two bodyguards attacked the youth with stones, police said. Bansode suffered serious head injury in the attack and died, police said.

ith the arrest of two persons from Tamil Nadu, police on Thursday claimed to have solved a number of chain snatching and other criminal cases in the city. Manikandan Nadar (19) and Prabhakaran Nadar (24) were nabbed from Nagercoil town in the southern state, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-III) Kalyan Sanjay Jadhav told PTI. Addressing a news conference, Jadhav said police have seized a Swift car (registered in TN) which was stolen by the duo from Madurai, TN, and used in chain snatching and other crimes. A number offences had been registered against the duo in police stations at Manpada, Mumbra and Vishnunagar in Thane and also in a couple of cities in Tamil Nadu, including Kudankulam.

Besides chain snatching, the two were also involved in house break-ins and car theft, among other crimes, the DCP said. Manikandan and Prabhakaran were apprehended two days ago and have been brought to Thane by the police.

When you peep in what you find is a mix of a somewhat old world charm and a fun young vibe as well. As the name suggests you will find yourself surrounded by not just cute teapots in all shapes and sizes (an integral part of the décor) but also interesting cutlery holders, porcelain paintings and other decorative items that are adorable to say the least. HAT is Pakistan up to? In just 24 hours, it has violated the Line of Control (LoC) as many as four times. It has been resorting to heavy firing. It is killing Kashmiri citizens.

It is attacking villages of Kashmir on the border. And it continues to make baseless charges against India. Its army and terrorists make provocative statements.

It has become clear Pakistan does not want to live in peace with India.

Does it want war? Its army chief declares that India must realise Pakistan has changed, it is no longer weak. He says, he has nuclear weapons. Is that a threat? Does he mean he is prepared for a nuclear war? Two responsible, pragmatic neighbours cannot think of a nuclear war. There cannot be a conventional war between India and Pakistan. Just one nuclear weapon is enough to destroy a large number of people of either Pakistan or India.

The Soviet Union and the United States were deadly enemies, but they knew all that they could do was to wage a cold war. There has been no war in the world since World War II. This clearly points to the fact that there cannot be a war between Pakistan and India. Pakistan is only wishing a lot of ammunition by resorting to intensive firing every day along the LoC and losing money. It is sad that it has not realised that there is no alternative to peace with regard to relations between two countries in today’s nuclear world.

PRINCIPAL outcome from the concluded meeting of countries participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the eastern Russian city of Ufa has been an agreement between the heads of Government of India and Pakistan to renew inter-state parleys between the two South Asian neighbours. It is being hailed as a breakthrough for Indian diplomatic endeavours as Indo-Pakistan talks had remained stalled for about a year, ever since the Indian government, rather justifiably, cancelled talks as an expression of its umbrage of an act of Pakistan’s High Commissioner in India, Abdul Basit, who met Kashmiri separatists, at his official residence in August, 2014, before the scheduled talks, in New Delhi. Similarly, the establishment in Pakistan has provided tangible signals that it is looking forward to the talks, while trying to temper the apparent Indian satisfaction from Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif’s, agreement to the confabulations without any particular pre-condition, through articulations of Pakistan’s commitment to discuss Kashmir, followed by Siachen, and the distribution of the waters of Sir Creek, which divides India and Pakistan in the Kutch region.

With India, Pakistan has kept up its policy of antagonism and often makes endeavours in myriad ways to harry India notwithstanding repeated Indian overtures for a beginning of a better relationship, defined more by bonhomie and understanding than enmity.

Whenever a central administration in India is relatively more hesitant and mealy-mouthed than others, or more important, is perceived to be such by Pakistan, the degree of its aggressive postures and statements against India moves northward. India usually and correctly makes sure than no vital aspect of its national interest and security is comprised through unpleasant Pakistani acrobatics.

Probably a better coordination of all its concerned departments for implementation of its policy would enable India to administer its responses more effectively and befittingly to the Pakistan government’s representatives in the upcoming talks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has possibly conveyed to Pakistan in words and acts that while he would be most keen for a better relationship with, and be willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the Pakistan — perhaps a tad more in his graciousness, albeit within the permissible ambit of diplomacy, than what most of his fellow citizens would deem necessary — he would similarly leave no stone unturned to give an appropriate repartee to Pakistan if needlessly and unacceptably provoked. This position has enabled Modi to broach the necessity for talks between India and Pakistan in Ufa and also to ensure the certainty of the talks being held sooner than later.

When National Security Advisors of the two countries meet with the objective of hammering out a workable relationship between India and Pakistan, the Indian position is bound to be marked by make overtures symbolising reason and amity. It is in Pakistan’s interest and also its responsibility to ensure that it tries to seek a way out from its record of intransigence it has displayed till date and begins to accept the realities of the long concluded actions completed nearly seven decades back. Flexibility within those established parameters would be much easier for both countries. AMMU: Pakistani troops on Thursday pounded a number of places along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region with heavy firing and mortars, leaving five dead and many persons injured and triggering fear among the villagers, officials said. India lodged a protest with Pakistan while the Indian troops retaliated 'effectively' to the cross-border firing which came ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Jammu today.

The army early this morning also foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Poonch district by a group of militants trying to enter the Indian side, the defence spokesman said. hen it comes to understanding wine, we’ve come a long way. We are now more open to using the drink to compliment certain meals. But, pairing Indian food with wine is still considered to be an experiment that could go wrong. And, since most Western cuisine is not as heavily spiced, the chances are that Indian food will overpower the flavour of the wine, since our cuisine is comparatively heavier on spices. However, while pairing Indian food with wine is a risky proposition, when you do get it right, there’s nothing quite like it! Ashwin Rodrigues, owner of Good Drop Wines, explains, “It’s not necessarily true that wine tastes better with Western cuisine. It’s really about pairing the right wine with the right food. We usually think of wines as a drink to be served only during special celebrations or when you’ve organised a proper, sitdown dinner.

However, you’d be surprised to find that you can pair wines with several basic snacks as well. So, the next time you’ve got friends visiting, don’t be afraid to open a bottle of wine. Avoid Print overKill

Sadan tells us, “Prints are now a firmly established menswear favourite. And, the trend has grown to reach a point where I don’t think that it’s possible to walk down the street without seeing someone wearing a printed item of clothing. But, you have to be careful when you’re sporting the trend. As a general rule, an overkill is best avoided.

If your outfit features a vibrant print, it’s best to keep the rest of your look plain and simple. So, I suggest you opt for clean-lined separates.”

Sagar says, “If you pick large prints such as florals, team them with a contrasting pair of chinos for work and play. We were really excited to try the offerings from Silli Chilli, an Asian and Oriental fast food delivery service that recently set up a branch in Bandra. But, the 48hrs Team was not too impressed...

An electric start The one dish that held our collective attention, was the Electric Thai Bhel (`150). Now, we’ve heard of Chinese Bhel, and while we still haven’t been able to forgive the mess of fried noodles and soy sauce that this dish is, here comes Thai Bhel, and an ‘electric’ one at that.

As interesting as it sounded, the starter was quite disappointing. The noodles had a chewy, rubbery texture and the handful of nuts didn’t work to improve its taste. However, the Fish in Chilli Oyster Sauce (`240) that we tried next turned out to be a happy contrast. It was a delicious preparation with soft fish and a perfectly balanced sauce. The bell peppers enhanced the taste, making it a must-try preparation, especially if you like oyster sauce.

Make your own woks Woks are perfect for a quick weekday lunch, so it’s no surprise that Mumbai is seeing a number of make-your-own-wok joints opening up. But, none of them have taken the city by storm and these restaurants have their work cut out for them. This is something that we saw with Silli Chilli’s make-your-own-wok as well. We tried a wok of Prawns with Fried Rice in Sweet Chilli Sauce (`250), which was strictly average. The unbalanced sauce, which was too sweet, didn’t do much to save the crunchy, well-cooked prawns. The egg in the rice was a nice touch though. While the dish satisfied us, it’s not something that you’re missing out on. The Chicken with Wheat Noodles and Silli Chilli Dynamite Sauce (`200) was super spicy, but we can’t hold that against them. After all, the sauce is called ‘dynamite’, so we were well-warned! It’s a great option for those who enjoy their meals hot and fiery.

A sweet end The dessert from Silli Chilli, Homemade Gooey Chocolate Brownie (`50), suffered from the same problems that most of their other dishes did — an imbalance. But, this time it was more about the texture than about the taste. The brownie, which looked delicious, was doughy in parts, giving it a fudge-y and unappetising texture. Even though it was a bit too sweet, it tasted decent and is sufficient enough to satisfy your sweet cravings.

All in all, Silli Chilli is not the most fabulous place we’ve ever eaten from, but it’s a good option for a quick and affordable lunch.

Before we move on to the mains We were really looking forward to Silli Chilli’s Awesome Threesome Dim Sums (`180). But, opening the box to sample the jelly-like casing was a disappointment. Hoping against hope, we bit into the dim sums, but were treated to… well, absolutely no flavour. The sauce that came along with the dish was the only saving grace, and added some much-needed taste to the bland filling. In contrast, the Crystal Chicken Dim Sums (`200) were very tasty. The casing was well-prepared, and the filling actually had flavour — so much so that we didn’t need the sauce at all!

ALL BOXED UP

The latest in a line of ready meal kits for kitchen novices in a hurry, Burgundy Box stands out for several reasons. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why it should be at the top of your shopping list

nfortunately for Burgundy Box, they weren’t the first ones to the meal kit party. So, there’s nothing about the brand that stands out, apart from its unusual name and the fact that it does come to you in a very attractive burgundy (well, more purple really…) box. Options for your meal include everything from a Basil Chicken & Corn Soup to an Egg Chettinad Curry, or for vegetarians, everything from Paneer Steaks to Tacos. With around 25 options, you’re not going to get bored of what they have on offer, even if they don’t switch it up anytime soon.

The one thing that is different about Burgundy Box is that it’s associated with a renowned chef, Ajay Chopra, who has hotels such as the Marriott and The Westin Mumbai Garden City on his impressive menu. So, you can be sure that the singer, stage performer and chef’s meals are going to be experimental enough to stay interesting.

Money talks And, at Burgundy Box, you’re going to like what it has to say!

The meals are surprisingly affordable — for less than `500 (`410 for what we tried) you can have a comfortable, filling meal for two.

What you should remember

Taste test It doesn’t matter how well a meal is presented — at the end of the day, it’s the way it tastes that really matters. I’ve tried numerous meal kits this year, and this definitely stood out.

When they say they give you everything, they really mean everything! You won’t need salt, pepper or even oil — it’s all measured out, well proportioned and perfectly balanced. With a star chef at its helm, that doesn’t come as a surprise. n What we tried: The Moroccon Chicken Steaks were perfectly

balanced by a Moroccan Harissa marinade. They came with olive pilaf had to be gently drizzled with a tangy orange glaze that lived up to the delectable pictures on their site. It’s one of the simplest, most impressive recipes I’ve ever tried, and takes only around 15 minutes to prepare, as promised.

Unfortunately, for those looking for lunch in a hurry, Burgundy Box is currently taking orders only for dinner, and on the same day only if you order by 6pm. However, if you plan your meals in advance, you could prepare for a lunch the next day. It’s a small hiccup, but with customers looking for the most convenient option, it could see people drift away to competitors who may offer all-day service. Hopefully, this is only because they’ve just set up. Definitely order the meal that we tried though; it’s worth your time and money — not to mention how delicious it tastes!

Hungarian EscapadEs A land filled with warm people, delicious food and striking scenery, Hungary possesses a unique charm. Yamini Walia tells you about her experience in this exotic European nation

Y

our first international vacation needs to be special. And, if the destination is Europe, you can’t wish for anything better. While on a recent trip to Europe, I visited one of the most exotic European nations — Hungary.

First stop: Gyor The best part about Hungary is its old-world charm, which I noticed as soon as I landed in Gyor. When you come from a city like Mumbai, the calm, quiet environment of this country leaves you dazed for a while, especially since the world here seems to stop at just 6pm. The roads were so empty, that we were left wondering whether there were any inhabitants in the city at all!

However, it was a charming and comforting silence rather than an eerie one, and walking through those quiet, narrow lanes was an experience I will never forget.

Surprisingly, there’s a bit of India in Hungary — strolling around the streets, I came across classic Indian cars such as the Maruti 800 and the Esteem, which made me nostalgic.

We decided to make our way to the City Centre for dinner. It was the only tourist attraction in the city and we were taken aback by the number of people there — it felt as though the city had suddenly come alive! The centre was huge, with water fountains dotting the sides and several places to eat along the way. But, the best part of the night was when

we sampled the renowned gelato ice creams.

Now you may be aware that gelato is a dessert native to Italy, but what we tried in Gyor left us asking for more. The sorbet-like consistency was delightful, with flavours such as Kiwi (which bowled me over) and all sorts of berries added to the delicious mix.

We stayed in Gyor for just a day, and although it seems like too short a stay, one day is enough to explore this tiny town. Don’t forget to stop over at the small street malls on the way back from the gelato stalls!

Out first stop in Budapest was Caste Hill, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Getting to the top is no joke, especially in the humid weather! Thankfully, the locals helped by showing us a much easier route — instead of taking the steps, we took the elevators, reaching the top much quicker. Once there, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the entire city — the Chain bridge, the parliament and the Danube River, all of which were a real

treat for our eyes. At Castle Hill, we also visited a church, the Royal Palace and even participated in a bout of archery. What impressed us most were the statues — they were carved with absolute perfection. You can also witness some exceptional art work with artists right outside, sitting on the footpath and beautifully sketching the view of the city. I was left spellbound!

After spending at least three hours Castle Hill, we visited a local market that was full of Hungarian specialities — paprika, artificial jewellery and meat! This is where I tried the Goulash soup which had meat that was perfectly cooked. But, since it contained too much oil for my liking, sadly, this Hungarian speciality failed to impress me.

Unfortunately, due to lack of time, we couldn’t stay in Budapest for longer, but I can certainly say that Budapest is a gem of a city!

Last stop: BaLatoN Since I was really in Hungary to attend a wedding, Balaton was our main destination.

But, wedding or not, you can’t visit Hungary and not stop over at Balaton! You may not have heard of this place but I can guarantee you that it’s among the most stunning locations that you’ll ever see in your life!

Lake Balaton is often referred to as the Hungarian Sea because Hungary is landlocked. The water is evidently clean and clear, and is divine blue in colour. We stayed in an apartment that was nothing short of a resort and the view from each room was absolutely marvellous. The best time to visit the lake at night; the reflection of the moon on the crystal clear water makes you want to stay at Balaton forever. We certainly didn’t want to leave!

The wedding took place in an even more beautiful location — a lush green area with a view of the lake. Since this was the first church wedding that I attended, the entire experience was pretty overwhelming. The best part: we travelled in an old-school tram from the dinner venue to the church. At night, the moonlit backdrop was like a cherry on top of our experience here!

Balaton was definitely my favourite location and you just can’t afford to skip this place when you’re in Hungary! Make sure that you indulge in some local drinks (like the Palinka) and spend at least 3-4 days in this beautiful city! >> Villages with quaint little houses dot the shores of Lake Balaton

Next stop: Budapest Budapest is almost five-hours away from Gyor. So we packed our bags early the next morning and made our way to our next destination. Budapest is perhaps the first place people think of whenever someone talks about Hungary, and rightly so! The city

BUSINESS BRIEFS Sebi Asks Exchanges To Crack Down On Frivolous Trades To tackle the menace of freak and erroneous trades, markets regulator Sebi today asked stock exchanges to penalise brokers placing erroneous orders and discourage the annulment requests. Erroneous or freak trades also include trades taking place due to malfunctioning of a trading system, as also the transactions executed due to a punching error by a dealer, which in the market parlance is known as 'fat-finger trades'.

There have been some cases where overall markets have also taken a hit due to such 'erroneous' trades. The stock exchanges are empowered to annul trades and they have their own bye-laws to deal with such cases.

Govt Further Cuts Gold, Silver Import Tariff Value Government yesterday further slashed the import tariff value of gold to USD 376 per 10 grams and of silver to USD 498 per kg due to weak global prices. For last fortnight, the tariff value of gold was fixed at USD 382 per 10 grams and silver at USD 516 per kg. The import tariff value is the base price at which customs duty is determined to prevent under-invoicing.

It is revised on a fortnightly basis taking into account global prices.

Govt Sanctions Rs 700 Cr Addl Fund For RRB Capitalisation The government yesterday sanctioned an additional Rs 700 crore for the recapitalisation of weak regional rural banks (RRBs) and extended the validity period for the fund infusion to next fiscal. "The validity period for recapitalisation of RRBs had ended. It has been extended to 2016-17. Rs 700 crore additional amount has been sanctioned," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said after the Cabinet meeting here. The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved for extension for the next three years, that is up to 2016-17 of the scheme of recapitalisation of weak RRBs, he said.

Great Eastern Shipping Plans To Raise Up To Rs 500-Cr India's largest private shipping company Great Eastern Shipping is planning to raise up to Rs 500 crore through non-convertible debentures(NCDs) on a private placement basis. The company will seek its Board's approval "to offer or invite subscriptions for secured / unsecured redeemable non-convertible debentures, in one or more series / tranches, aggregating up to Rs 500 crores on private placement", it said in a BSE filing.

Govt Allows Use Of Its Capital To SAARC Fund For Infra Sector Government yesterday cleared the utilisation of India's capital contribution to SAARC Development Fund (SDF) for promoting cross-border infrastructure projects, trade and growth. The Cabinet approved the proposal to permit utilisation of India's capital contribution to SDF for Economic and Infrastructure Windows, an official statement said. So far, India's capital contribution was only for the Social Window of SDF. "The approval will help in promoting projects such as cross border infrastructure.

Siemens Bags Rs 123 Cr Order From Bangladesh's Co Siemens yesterday said it has bagged a Rs 123-crore order from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh at two sites located in Dhaka. In a BSE filing, Siemens Ltd said it has "won a crucial turnkey order worth approximately Rs 123 crore from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh." "The scope of work for the project involves design, procurement, supply, installation, testing, commissioning of 230/132kV GIS Substation at Shyampur and 132/33kV GIS Substation at Dhamrai- both sites located in Dhaka," it added.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (July 16, 2015) a net 84.25 points (0.99%) and closed at the 8608 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 8546 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 8542 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 8616 points level at 3.27 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 73 points and closed above the psychologically important 8600 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 39 were gainers, 10 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. All the sectoral indices closed in the green.

Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables and banking stocks, TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 3.68%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 830 were gainers, 639 were losers and 38 remained unchanged.

Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive.

Further, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 day moving averages and all the four averages are rising.

Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 8667 points level. There is a possibility that it could find some resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected.

mong 500 top listed borrowers (ex-banking and financial services), 234 corporates had a negative sensitivity to rupee (INR) depreciation in FY14, says India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra).According to it ‘If the rupee depreciates by 1% (against the US dollar (USD)), it would shave off their absolute EBITDA by 0.19% (median).

However, this is lower than the 0.28% (median) observed across 237 corporates in FY13. These net foreign currency (FC) spenders’ accounts for 45% of the FY14 total consolidated debt as well as 37% of FY14 consolidated FC debt”. The agency estimates that in FY15 the situation may not have shown a meaningful improvement over FY14.

Overall corporate performance (net profits and sales growth) is expected to record only modest improvement (less than 10%).

The stress on the banking sector is likely to prevail with NPA’s expected to rise further in FY16.

Capital market sentiments are to remain elevated with the benchmark SENSEX expected to be at 27,000- 30,000 by the end of FY16.

The overall investment climate of the country is widely expected to improve this fiscal.

Weakness in demand is a persistent issue affecting investments along with policy constraints and land/power availability.

Government initiatives such as ease of doing business, clearing of stalled projects, simplification of environmental regulation, coal auctions ,FDI in key segments and foreign policy initiatives seen as positives for investment revival.

gated net foreign Currency (FC) outflows of these 500 corporates grew at a slower rate than in the past (FY14: 6.9%, FY13: 7.9%). This was due to a decline in commodity prices and low industrial imports due to muted domestic industrial activity. The forex inflow growth rate (FY14: 10.7%, FY13: 13.7%), though off the highs of FY11 and FY12, was higher than the growth rate of forex outflow.

But there are some sectors that could be positively affected by Rupee depreciation. The net exporting sectors IT and pharma are among the more efficient FC earners. Rupee depreciation by 1% is expected to improve the absolute EBITDA (median) of IT corporates by 1.8% (FY13: 2%) and that of pharmaceutical corporates by 1.63% (1.84%). The textile sector also showed a positive sensitivity of 0.7%

in FY14 (median FY13: 1.2%). During the last three years, the textile sector has witnessed healthy overseas demand, lower raw material prices and improved export competitiveness.

Sectors Negatively Affected by Rupee Depreciation includes fertiliser and consumer durables with prominent negative sensitivity. A 1% rupee depreciation would reduce the absolute EBITDA of corporates in the fertiliser sector (highly import dependent) by 2% (median FY13: negative 2.1%) and would shave off 0.37% (median) of operating profit for the consumer durable sector (negative 0.3%).

The oil and gas sector, despite being a heavy net importer, is lesser affected by rupee depreciation.

Since the prices of end-products of upstream and midstream players are import price parity linked, these

corporates would be in a position to pass on higher rupee costs in subsectors where regulatory intervention is limited.

And there are worries for Leveraged Importers. According to FY14 data, the operating profit of 180 of the 234 net importers will fall by no more than 1% for 1% rupee depreciation. However, this group has a standalone median leverage of 6.4x, implying low tolerance to sharp rupee depreciation. A higher negative sensitivity is exhibited by 32 corporates whose operating profit may fall by 1% to 3%, for every 1% rupee depreciation. The median leverage for this group is 7.5x. Given the current high cost of hedging dollar liabilities (estimated at around 700bp USD-INR forward premiums), an un-hedged sustained currency shock can deteriorate their credit profiles further.

ardon the pun, but Salman Khan’s movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ (‘BB’) is poised to be a mega ‘hit-and-run’ pan-India and even in Pakistan. The sinewy Khan’s latest action-adventure narrates the story of a Hindu common man who is a staunch Lord Hanuman devotee, on a social mission of taking a speech-impaired young Pakistani girl, back to her home country, against a tsunami of obstacles.

Known for his benevolence offscreen, Salman has also donned the avatar of ‘Godfather-mentor’ to Sooraj (son of senior actor Aditya Pancholi) who is paired opposite Athiya (daughter of actor Suneil Shetty) as he is ‘producing’ their debut launch venture ‘Hero’ directed by Nikhil Advani.

ipasha Basu may currently be the reigning horror queen in Bollywood, but we hear that the actress has now decided to tread a different path. In fact Bipasha who was last seen in the film ''Alone'', will soon be commencing work on a twelve part miniseries on Eros Now titled ''Client'', which will be directed by Rohan Sippy.

Confirming the same Rohan says, "Exceed Entertainment approached me with something that they had already developed, which is ''Client'', and the medium is very exciting and the show itself in very interesting. Besides I am a big fan of such shows, and it's a great chance to create content for a new medium with good storytelling and decent budgets, sans most restrictions. So I was pretty excited to take it on and do something fun."

Further talking about the show itself, Rohan adds, "Client''' will be a 12 part miniseries that features a bit of drama and thriller aspects, with Bipasha Basu playing the central character of a powerful go getter.

Currently, we are in the process of locking down the final script for the series and we should begin shooting within a month or so."

The Telugu film, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Ramya Krishnan and Tamannah Bhatia has been dubbed in Hindi, and from all accounts is doing terrific business. If Hollywood films dubbed into Indian languages

EW DELHI: The USD 11 billion steel and power conglomerate JSW has put on hold plans to acquire an IPL cricket team in the wake of betting scandal hitting the star-studded cricketing league.

Sajjan Jindal-led JSW was reportedly in talks with Diageo to buy United Spirits' stake in Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"As the JSW Group Chairman said we are interested in acquiring an IPL team, we are still interested in it, but the events in the past two days have forced us to wait and watch the situation and then take a decision after things are clear," JSW Sports CEO Mustafa Ghouse told PTI. He added that the situation is "too fluid" for a company to take decision and it is better to "wait and watch" how the situation unfolds in order to take any concrete decisions.

On July 14, a three-member panel headed by former CJI R M Lodha had suspended the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals for two years from IPL in a clean up of cricket, hit by the 2013 betting scam involving their top officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra.

Meiyappan, a former Team Principal of India Cements Ltd (ICL)-owned franchise CSK and Kundra, co-owner of Jaipur IPL that runs Rajasthan Royals (RR), were suspended for life from any matches conducted by BCCI. Mustafa further said: "After the IPL event, I'm sure any company interested in buying an IPL team will wait for things to clear. We need to see the decisions of the BCCI and IPL following this. We do understand that there are 2-3 IPL teams on the block that can be acquired. Unless there is clarity, how can we go ahead with such a move."

BCCI can terminate two franchises: Lodha

New Delhi: Justice RM Lodha, who headed the committee that proposed a two-year suspension of the two teams - Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals -- has said that the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) is free to terminate the IPL franchises.

Justice Lodha's clarification came in the wake of some confusion over the committee's proposal, specifically over the extent to which the BCCI can act against the two franchises as follow-up to the committee's decision.

"It is for the BCCI to consider terminating the teams and the Supreme Court judgment is clear on that. The BCCI can do that," Justice Lodha told 'NDTV'.

OLKATA: The controversy-ridden IPL remains a "robust" product, its Chairman Rajeev Shukla said today insisting that the event will come back stronger with a minimum of eight teams.

Shukla, among a host of questions, was asked about the future of IPL and the number of teams it will have after the two-year suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

"We are always concerned about IPL and let me assure you the next edition will be a bigger success. IPL is a robust product and this judgement (suspension of teams) should not affect IPL as a product. The idea is to have the tournament in full format with a minimum of eight teams. We can't hold the event with six teams," Shukla made it clear.

Shukla said there are many options available for the road ahead for the IPL, something he will discuss

with the Governing Council in Mumbai on Sunday. One of the options is to run two suspended teams with BCCI control, he said.

"There are many options available and we will discuss them all in the meeting on Sunday. One option is that BCCI runs the two teams and responsible people will be deputed for the job," he said.

Asked about the possible conflict of interest if BCCI decides to take control of CSK and RR, Shukla said: "There is no question of any conflict of interest. BCCI is anyway supervising the IPL. There are two main areas: one is players' auction which is transparent and the other is managing teams.

Credible people can be deputed to do the managing job." On the return of the Kochi franchise, he said, "the arbitrator has given the verdict and we are going to appeal after seeking legal opinion. I can't say anything more as the matter is under litigation."

Shukla refused to comment when asked about CSK and RR being banned for life. He went on to say that the Governing Council will deliberate on the Lodha Committee report on Sunday.

"We will deliberate on there report in the meeting.

After that, a sub-group will be constituted and it will study the report. Based on that, we will decide how the report will be implemented," Shukla added.

Swamy seeks review on CSK suspension order

New Delhi: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy sought a review of the "excessively harsh" decision to suspend Chennai Super Kings from participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In a statement, he said Justice Lodha Committee report suspending for life two officials of CSK and Rajasthan Royals for involvement in betting has been well received.

Swiss extradite detained FIFA official to the United States

ENEVA: One of the seven FIFA officials arrested in Zurich as part of a corruption probe has been extradited to the United States, the Swiss Justice Ministry said today. The Federal Office of Justice said the man, whom it did not identify, was extradited yesterday.

"He was handed over to a three-man U.S. Police escort in Zurich who accompanied him on the flight to New York," the ministry said in a statement.

The official agreed last week to be extradited, unlike six others who are fighting extradition.

The extradited man is accused of "accepting bribes totaling millions of dollars in connection with the sale of marketing rights to various sports marketing firms and keeping the money for himself," the Swiss justice office said last week. All seven men were arrested on May 27 in dawn raids on a luxury hotel in Zurich

by Swiss federal police at the request of American federal agencies.

They include FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb of the Cayman Islands and former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay. Both have been suspended from football duty by FIFA's ethics committee.

A total of 14 men nine football officials and five marketing executives were indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in May, and a further four had their guilty pleas unsealed. They are alleged to have taken part in a racketeering conspiracy paying bribes of more than $150 million over a 24-year period.

The payments were tied to the award of broadcast and hosting rights for the World Cup, continental championships in North and South America, and regional club tournaments.

U.S. Authorities have said more indictments should follow, and FIFA President Sepp Blatter is a target of the widening case.

cLaren driver Jenson Button has endorsed the possible return of ground effect aerodynamics to Formula 1 in 2017.

As part of the Strategy Group's goal to have lighter and faster cars in F1, and better racing, a proposal focusing on ground effect underbodies was tabled, AUTOSPORT revealed during the British Grand Prix weekend. With teams invited to submit suggestions, Red Bull flagged a fundamental switch in how downforce is generated, moving away from complex front and rear wings to underbodies.

As used by GP2, a longer underbody tunnel would be a throwback to the ground-effect cars from the late 1970s and early '80s, less sensitive to running in dirty air.

The Strategy Group had previously announced plans to revert to a wider rear tyre 420mm, a size last seen in 1992 - in 2017 which would increase mechanical grip.

"It's good to see a lot of new ideas for the future - I wish they were next year rather than 2017," Button said.

While Red Bull was behind the initial ground effects suggestion, team principal Christian Horner isn't convinced by a separate proposal from an independent team for standardised floors.

"The regs are pretty tight as they are, so we wouldn't want to go anywhere near making it standard," he said.

"It wasn't a proposal from Red Bull. I don't think it would do anything, the cost of the floor is pretty marginal

at the end of the day, the floor around your gearbox and engine installation has to be unique."

Former FIA president Max Mosely led calls earlier this year for teams to be given greater technical freedom, in exchange for committing to a budget cap, which Horner also debunked.

"I don't think so," Horner, said when asked if a two-tier structure would work.

"There has been a proposal for a budget cap but complete freedom of windtunnel use and testing but that's a bit like putting an alcoholic in a wine cellar."

Murray's fellow Wimbledon semi-finalist Richard Gasquet, along with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Nicolas Mahut, will be in the French team at Queen's Club, where Britain are attempting to reach the World Group semi-finals for the first time since 1981.

"I think over the last couple of years we've had some good performances," Murray said.

"This is our level now as a team and this weekend is going to be a tough ask against four top grass-court players. They're all really, really good players so it is going to be a tough challenge for us but one we have an opportunity to win if we play at our best level."
