In spite of being present for their internal exams, these students have been marked absent in their marksheets, resulting in false failures. Taking note of the glitch, the State Board has started taking steps to correct it. It has also imposed fines on the offending colleges. CITY OPINIONS

Do you think the infrastructure projects will work in favour of the Congress-NCP? Chitra Lele Professor Yes. In a general sense, the public has a short-term memory. If you inaugurate projects and make promises before elections, it will yield votes.

Dashrath Pawar Student No. It does not matter now if he inaugurates 100 projects. The people are tired of the Congress and they have shown it in the LS elections.

Siddharth Kumar Financial expert Yes. It's not just an inauguration, it is the completion of an infrastructure project. The CM seems to be confident to face the public. It will help him and his party.

Gajanan Pattewar Entrepreneur No. People want a change in the state. Inaugurating projects will hardly make a difference. Most of the projects are in Mumbai, so it won't yield votes in rest of the state. Kajal Gohil Homemaker Yes. This is breathing time for the Congress in the state. If they utilise the next three months well, then they will have a chance of getting more seats.

By Khushboo Panjabi he weary residents of the Campa Cola Compound have found reprieve after the death of the first resident of the apartment complex. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Monday, extended their deadline to vacate the premises by two days, to June 20. Vinod Kothari (83) died after a cardiac arrest on Sunday which, the residents claim, happened due to mounting stress after the BMC served a notice intimating occupants about its demolition. “The demolition process will be extended for two days (June 20), because of the sudden death of a resident,” said Mohan Adtani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC. He added, “The set procedure will be followed on June 20,

Dr. Suleman Merchant from Sion Hospital, patron of Samruddhi’s cause, flew all the way to Switzerland to recruit expert orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Martin Berli, and he succeeded. Couple this with the donations she has received; Samruddhi’s future is looking bright By Shwetha Kannan

E

xpert orthopaedic surgeon from Switzerland, Dr. Martin Berli, has agreed to help three-year-old baby Samruddhi whose left leg was amputated after Panvel-Sawantwadi railway mishap and is currently being treated at the BMC-run Sion Hospital. Dr. Berli holds the clinical position of deputy team leader, Technical Orthopaedics at the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, which is a a highly specialised centre of excellence for assessing, treating and following up on all types of musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Suleman Merchant, radiology chief at Sion Hospital, who has been taking keen interest in Samruddhi’s case said, “I had heard about Dr. Berli from colleagues and

Dr. Martin Berli, Deputy Team Leader Technical Orthopaedics at the Balgrist University Hospital, Zurich who has agreed to help little Samruddhi to get back on her feet. acquaintances, and thought of discussing Samruddhi's case with him because I want her to get the best. So I planned my vacation in such a way that I could spend a few days in Switzerland and meet Dr. Berli there. It was not easy getting an appointment with him. But I managed it. I explained Samruddhi's case with him. The wait and efforts have paid off because Dr. Berli has agreed to help us.” The ADC then got in touch with Dr. Berli for more information about the plan of action for Samruddhi's treatment. This is what Dr. Berli had to say: Children's cases a little difficult as there are not many

Samruddhi recuperating in Sion hospital prosthetic devices in the market for children. Samruddhi’s case is particularly difficult because of the quality of her stump. The quality differs depending on whether a limb has to be amputated because of a tumor or after trauma. The soft tissue and bones may have a significantly different quality, depending on the reason why the limb was amputated. On being asked about the type of prosthesis that would suit Samruddhi, Dr. Berli said, “We would recommend the use of a KBM i.e. Kondylen Bettung Münster prosthesis. This easier to adapt to a growing limb and does not need to be replaced as often as a classic prosthesis with a silicone liner system. It is also less expensive.”

Kondylen Bettung Münster literally means 'nestling of condyles, Münster,' referring to the city where the prosthesis was developed by orthopedic surgeon Götz Gerd Kuhn, in 1960. In the USA, this below-knee prosthesis is usually called the supracondylar tibial prosthesis. About the probable cost of the prosthesis, Dr. Berli said, “There are significant differences in the pricing of prosthesis across countries. In Switzerland, for example, you would have to pay about USD 12,000 to 15,000 per prosthesis, while in India, they should be much less expensive. In Samruddhi’s case, because she is very young, she will need not only one but an entire series of prostheses, since she will grow out of them.” About Rs.17.5 has been collected through in the form of donations for Samruddhi's cause . Dr. Berli was not able to provide a specific time frame, within which the fitting of the prosthesis and rehabilitation could take place, without first examining Samruddhi himself. But he said, from what I know from Dr. Merchant, she needs to undergo surgery again. The duration of the treatment depends on the vascular situation, on the condition of the skin of her stump, on the bony situation, and might easily reach up to four to six months. But once a stable situation is reached and a prosthesis can be built, children adapt impressively quickly to the new situation and are mobile again.”

or thereafter. When we enter the premises, we will first start with disconnecting the electricity and then the water supply. BEST and Mahanagar staff, along with the ward officers, will be present during the demolition process.” Sunanda Verma, a resident, said, “It is just a temporary relief for us as the BMC has agreed to postpone the demolition process till June 20. We will still await permanent relief.” A resident said that on Monday morning, police officials from the Worli police station had visited the compound in three gypsies and two motor cycles to summon the core committee members for a discussion at 4 pm the next day at the Worli police station. “However,” said a resident, “we cannot go, as we will be at the High Court for the hearing” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

the internal exams! I'd have to loose year due to this goof-up. I have spoken to my principal and hope that the marks will be added soon. I have a clear passing record to book my admission to a degree college.” The principal of Siddharth College of Commerce has taken the initiative to rectify the goofup himself. Principal Dr. M.A. Mhaske said, “The moment I got to know about the issue, I summoned the affected students and asked for the correct marks. Then I went to the State Board to get it corrected. The teachers are responsible for this goof-up. They should be crosschecking such entries, instead of wasting away the careers of the students.” The board has asked the colleges to make an application accepting the mistake and providing the correct marks. The students then have to make an affidavit for the statement from their professors and college, and then submit it to the board. The ADC spoke to Laxmikant Pandey, Chairman of the Mumbai division, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, who said, “The professors and colleges are at fault and the board has imposed a fine on them. Once the students submit the affidavits, the state board will takeover the correction work and will distribute the corrected marks as soon as possible.”

ffice goers and students met with the monsoon on Monday morning just as it arrived in the city. Meteorological officials confirmed the arrival of monsoon and stated that the present weather conditions indicate a good rainfall in the Mumbai region. Sunday was an upper air cyclone circulation over north east Arabian sea and neighbourhood and it is now hovering over the North East and Gujarat coast. Heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts in the next 48 hours, according to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) forecast. While going to press, rainfall was recorded at 5mm Colaba and

24.9mm at Santacruz. According to the RMC, temperature at Colaba was recorded at 31.8 degree celsius (maximum) and 26 degree celsius (minimum) while the humidity was recorded at 98 per cent. Santacruz recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degree celsius and a minimum temperature of 26.2 degree celsius. The sudden showers on Monday gave the city a relief from the heat and sweating. Monday being the first day of the new academic year for most schools, students had a good time in the rain. The Central railway, however, developed some technical problems related to its signal system at Mulund station on Monday. Consequently, trains were running late by a few minutes. Frightening avidity, soulless curiosity

Much more frightening than the sea or the massive, threatening tetrapods lining the Marine Drive promenade on Sunday afternoon, was the sight of people thronging to watch the body of a young man being taken out of the water by the intrepid staff of the Fire Brigade. It was one more sad example of instructions and good sense being ignored, and one young man paid with his life for the obduracy of another, but that is a different story which has already been told. Our photographer Azad Shrivastava brought back the whole tragedy in sequence, and he ended it with these shocking pictures of the public response to the tragedy. “They watched it like a show,” he said bitterly. “They passed remarks about the drowning, they laughed and joked among each other, threatening to shove one another off the parapet. And they took pictures all the time on their smart phones. Even when the policemen finally brought the young boy up on a rail ladder, they jostled to get a good position so they could take more pictures. Finally the policeman had to shout at them to get out of the way and in fact, force a way forward”. We are not surprised. Mumbai has changed in a truly dreadful, soulless way and not all the illusions we have of ourselves as a city with guts and a heart can hide the fact that increasingly, we seem to show ourselves up as up-country bumpkins desperate for a bit of entertainment to lift the otherwise frenzied tenor of our horrible, commute-driven lives. Sunday lifted the veil on us as a callous mob a little higher.

The public who got wind of the rescue operation jostled one another as if some tamasha was taking place. Body of Ratan Chavan being brought out of the waters (inset).

Recently we have been following him on Facebook where he has been posting on his very successful seven-city tour. Conducting workshops on the subject of wine and food pairing in association with Nine Hills. If you're serious about wine with Indian food, you could hardly do

better than picking up a copy to get a bit of history of the wine industry in our state, major Indian varietals. Both red and white, how to judge or assess a wine, and of course, the pairing. Gujarati thali with Chenin Blanch, Viognier (described as the new Chardonnay) with chicken tikkas or

Shrikhand and Chenin Blanc

It definitely has a ring to it and personally, we have decided that chef, food stylist, photographer and writer Michael Swamy's 'Easy Guide to Pairing Indian Food and Wine' is an absolute keeper. For one thing, it's production qualities are excellent. For another, it is, thankfully, not a tome. Each of its 64 pages is a delight to handle and go through, and comes with the expertise that Michael has been collecting over the years. Which is not a surprise, seeing the dogged determination with which he has been carving out his own parth to success over the past decade. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, London, Michael is a leading consultant in the world of food media. He has also worked on the first two seasons of Master Chef India as well as directed episodes featuring Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna. He has authored the 'East Indian Kitchen', which is meticulously researched and very well written, winning the Gourmand Award for Best Indian Cookbook (technical category) in 2011-12.

kebabs, kormas, or the perfect foil to “lipid heavy” nuts, crisps and pakoras. There are some general suggestions before Michael takes readers into the specifics. And at the back, a special section of recipes, paired with the proper wine. Creamy grilled cottage cheese paired with Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc or a Shiraz Rose, Crumb Fried Lamb Chops with a Cabernet Sauvignon, and the one we salivated over the most, Pondicherry-style, pan-grilled Scallops in a saffron sauce. Paired with the afore-mentioned Viognier. Or Chardonnay.

said the experience was worse than a local train at peak hour. “It was crammed bodies, the stink of sweat, cigarette and the occasional beedi, and the feeling that perverts were just waiting for a chance to do something.” Which must have happened because, of course, the Metro is not gender-segregated. Let's hope this is all a case of first time fads, and that the public's absurd obsession with riding on the Metro settles down into mere relief that there is an alternative to extortionate rickshaws at last.

The Metro and its fall-out

Sometime in the eighties, Vinod Kothari came to the Campa Cola Compound in Worli as the first resident of Patel Building. He had a flat on the fifth floor, and later, he bought one on the sixth as well, and this is where he lived all this time. At 83 years of age, he was frail, but before the trouble (you know which one we refer to) began, he was in decent health. Then the stress began to catch up with him, and on Sunday it proved too much. Just two days before that, he had been talking to people, the media and Ramdas Athawale of the RPI, predicting quietly that he felt he would not live much longer, and that the next week would see him having to give up the key to his home so that the BMC could demolish it. But before that happened, he passed away quietly. He had said he was not sure their homes would be saved, and he seemed to be very tired, as if he had given up. On Sunday afternoon, his wife went to visit her relatives. Mr Kothai lay down to take a nap. That was it. He was No. 5 on the list of elderly people for whom the whole thing just proved to be too much.

Residents of Versova could scarcely believe their eyes when they ventured out of their homes on Saturday in the early evening. From Seven Bungalows to the tacky Versova Beach, it was wall-to-wall people, being ferried in from the last station of the Metro, crossing the roads in mini mobs, wandering up from the beach and generally causing all kinds of traffic hazards and jams. Indeed, it seemed as if every resident of Ghatkopar and its environs had decided they wanted a ten-rupee train ride. And the problems of crowding were compounded by the fact that this weekend just past, children for some reason rode free! The funniest sight, provided one was not inside the bogie, was that of the Metro crammed with passengers like the local trains, with the doors unable to close and the trains themselves standing stationary. Finally it was left to exasperated cops to semi-yank people out. Which means that they did the yanking when pleas made with folded hands just failed! A colleague who made the mistake of traveling on Sunday,

Poor Mr Kothari

Chavan pitches for Metro Line 2, Coastal Road, reels out list of Infra projects

W

hile inaugurating the southbound arm of Kherwadi junction flyover and the PanjrapolGhatkopar Link Road (PGLR) here yesterday afternoon, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that the state government expected cooperation from the union Environment ministry to launch the Charkop-BandraMankhurd Metro Line 2. Speaking to newspersons here, he argued that the

Coastal Road project which would commence from Marine Drive will be one-sixth the coast of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link project. He added that the Metro, Mono and Eastern Freeway projects will change the way Mumbaikars have been traveling till today. Later speaking to newspersons, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) metropolitan commissioner UPS Madan disclosed that the authority is also planning to construct a 2 Km connector over the Ram-

abai Ambedkar Nagar that will connect the Eastern Express Highway with the Eastern Freeway project. The Kherwadi flyover will provide the signal-free connectivity to motorists from Dahisar to Worli. Besides this the PGLR will enable motorists to use the entire Eastern Freeway and will help them cruise through avoiding traffic congestion at Dadar, Sion, Chembur, Kurla and Mankhurd. The completed Eastern Freeway is now expected to carry 65 thousand

Leaked IB report an attempt to criminalise dissenting voices By A Staff Reporter

T

he purposefully leaked IB report, marked 'secret' naming senior reputed activists, NGOs and people's movements and accusing them of hurting the national economic security is nothing but an attempt at criminalising any dissenting voices. AAP sees this as a move to curbing the activities of groups and individuals working to protect the life and livelihood of people living on the margins, and working to protect land, water, forest and other natural resources. AAP condemns this dishonesty and vindictiveness of the security agencies and believes that such attempts needs to be nipped in its bud itself and NDA government should desist from promoting such mischief and rather

focus on other important tasks on hand. For many years now, India has been witnessing the loot and plunder of our natural resources, like minerals, land, forests, water etc. at the hands of large multinational and Indian corporations. In addition, policies have been pursued to systematically allow foreign corporations like Monsanto, which have a record for bribing public regulatory authorities, to get monopolies on our seeds in the guise of promoting genetically modified foods. The country has also pursued nuclear energy, which is the most expensive and dangerous way of producing energy, in order to give contracts of lakhs of crores to foreign corporations. Most of these projects have caused displacement of mainly trib-

als on a large scale, environmental destruction and have encouraged mega corruption, which is the main reason why they have been pursued by the governments. The Supreme Court of India has also had several occasions to comment on the loot, plunder, social injustice and environmental destruction embedded in these projects. The CAG and most recently the Justice M.B. Shah Commission (who also heads the SIT on black money), have also commented very adversely on the same projects which the IB accuses NGO's of opposing. So is the IB also accusing the Supreme Court, the CAG and the Shah commission of acting as foreign agents who are opposing India's development?

Vakola building collapse: BMC takes it easy By Zuber Ansari

T

hree months after the building collapse in Vakola which took the lives of seven people and injured four persons including three minors, the BMC seems to be lackadaisical in their approach towards the investigation done by the police. According to Vakola police, which is investigating this matter, the BMC's building proposal department was served with a notice to give statements to the police regarding the details of the collapse. However, three months on, the civic authorities seem to have neglected the notice and have failed to give their statements. It may be recalled that seven persons were killed and four injured when a

seven-storey building collapsed in Vakola, Santacruz (East) on March 14 wherein Shankar Lok Apartments in Yashwant Nagar near Vakola Masjid crashed with a substantial chunk falling on neighbouring Catherine Chawl Nos 1 and 2, home to 25 families. Since then, the police served a notice to the BMC's building proposal department to give an explanation detailing the reasons for the collapse. “We can't proceed with the investigation as the authorities of building proposal department have not reverted to us with the reasons and details of the collapse. So even charging anyone for this collapse will not do justice to the affected families,” said Vinayak Mulay, senior police inspector of

Vakola police station. He further added, “We have certain leads in this case about the accused and other matters related to this case. However, it is very difficult for us to make any arrests or proceed legally unless the concerned civic department gives us the statements.” Mulay said that the H-East ward officials have given their statements in the matter. “While giving the statements, they contended that they are not concerned with this collapse as the building proposal department of the BMC looks into such matters. Accordingly, we had served a notice to the concerned department. Now, we are forced to send another reminder notice to the same department with the help of the CR registered in the case.”

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan after inaugurating the flyover at Panjrapol junction in Chembur takes the first ride on the newly constructed flyover on Monday. The flyover is part of the Panjrapol-Ghatkopar Link Road (PGLR), a connector to the Eastern Freeway.

vehicles every day, he added. Chavan earlier reeled out the infrastructure projects that the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government had completed or has commenced implementation. He argued that the MMRDA has, in the last five years, delivered projects worth more than Rs 15,000 crore and is implementing various projects worth about Rs 10,000 crore. He added that the Authority will also be undertaking projects worth Rs 36,000 crore which include – the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro Line-3, Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, Surya Water Project and Worli-Sewri corridor.

State BJP furious

CITY

Since Ashok Wankhede's appointment as OSD to Lok Sabha Speaker came against Modi's directive about not appointing Officers on Special Duty who had served under Congress ministers Ashok Wankhede

By Prashant Hamine

S

tate BJP unit leaders are furious over the appointment of freelance journalist Ashok Wankhede based in New Delhi as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. According to sources in the state BJP, Wankhede, a prominent face in debates on many private television channels, is a known BJP

baiter. The state BJP leadership disclosed that the appointment violates Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive to his ministers that no personal secretary or OSDs who had served under Congress ministers in the past should be hired or retained in the ministry. Sources disclosed that Wankhede, who hails from Maharashtra, has been a vocal critic of the BJP. Moreover, sources further added that it was decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all such appointments will be scrutinised and done by party

organisational secretary Ram Lal. State party leaders are clueless about how a person like Wankhede was appointed as OSD to a rather genial person like Lok Sabha

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. The latter also hails from Ratnagiri, a link that seems to be the common thread in Wankhede's appointment. Meanwhile, in a related de-

velopment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reported to have put his foot down over Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's move to appoint Alok Singh as his personal secre-

07 tary. The latter was earlier personal secretary to former Congress External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid and belongs to the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Recently, Modi had stepped in and asked his newly elected Lok Sabha MP from Barabanki in UP, Priyanka Singh Rawat, not to appoint her father Uttam Ram as her personal assistant. The directive from the Prime Minister's Office was clear that all such appointments shall be carefully selected and screened by the party organisation.

Pawar to tell on CM Furious with Chavan's sluggish decision-making, the NCP president has decided to take this matter up with Congress president Sonia Gandhi whom he will meet in the next couple of days By A Special Correspondent fter the debacle in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the NCP has adopted an aggressive stance against Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. The NCP strongly feels that there is a need to expedite the

functioning. When contacted, NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “There is huge resentment against the Chief Minister’s slow pace of decision-making. Everybody in the party felt that things had to move fast and quick deci-

NCP chief Sharad Pawar

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan

decision-making process in the administration and the party ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled in September-October this year. Many in the NCP believe that quick decisions on some policy matters will certainly help both the parties in forthcoming elections. This is the first time the NCP is openly registering its complaint against Chavan to the Congress high command. Pawar convened a meeting with NCP ministers, on Sunday, where discontent against Prithviraj Chavan came to the fore. The ministers conveyed that policy decisions had been languishing and their implementation was not moving at the desired pace ahead of the polls. Most of the ministers virtually criticised the CM for his style of

sions should be taken on issues like abolition of Local Body Tax (LBT), Maratha reservation and power purchase from outside to ensure 24x7 electricity in the state. We have been repeatedly telling Chavan to increase the pace in decision-making”. Some NCP leaders are also of the opinion that the Chief Minister is not doing enough to come to the defence of NCP ministers on critical issues like the irrigation scam. The collective effort in image-building of the Congress-NCP coalition is clearly missing. Against this backdrop, sources claimed that the NCP chief Sharad Pawar had decided to take up the issue of delay in decisionmaking at the government level with the central leadership of the Congress.

he Election Commission of India (ECI) has reserved its ruling in the alleged Paid News case against former Maharashtra chief minister, now sitting Congress Lok Sabha MP from Nanded, Ashok Chavan. Sources in the ECI disclosed that the poll body has completed the hearing in the case yesterday and has kept its decision in abeyance. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court in its ruling on May 5 had directed the poll body to conduct daily hearings in the case and give its ruling within 45 days. The deadline set by the Apex Court is set to end on June 19. Sources in the poll body did not give any reasons for withholding its ruling.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court of India had on May 5 rejected Chavan's plea challenging the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to investigate the alleged case of 'paid news' filed against him. The Apex Court upheld the Delhi High Court order stating that the ECI is empowered to probe into the allegations of paid news if the expenses for the same are not being reflected in the election returns filed by the candidate. Chavan had challenged the Delhi HC order before the Supreme Court in November 2011. The case pertains to an alleged paid news titled 'Ashok Parva' (The Era of Ashok) appearing in a leading Marathi daily during the 2009 Assembly elections. Chavan had then defeated his nearest In-

dependent rival Dr. Madhav Kinhalkar by a margin of 1.07 lakh votes from Bhokar assembly constituency. Kinhalkar had then moved the court of law over the alleged Paid News appearing in a section of the vernacular Marathi newspapers during the 2009 assembly elections. It now remains to be seen as to what stance the EC takes in the case. In a related case, the EC on October 20, 2011 had disqualified then sitting Rashtriya Parivartan Dal MLA from Uttar Pradesh Umlesh Yadav for three years for allegedly suppressing expenditure on paid news. If the ECI goes by its earlier ruling of October 20, 2011, then as per the law, a question mark hangs over his earlier 2009 term as MLA and his current election as a Lok Sabha MP.

‘LBT is Octroi-naka at traders doorstep’ By Suresh Golani

T

rade associations in the Mira-Bhayandar region have made it loud and clear that they are not opposed just to Local Body Tax (LBT) but also to Octroi or any other type of entry tax. Representatives of 21 local trade associations participated in a joint meeting chaired by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), on Monday, to find an alternative to LBT. While MBMC Mayor Catlyn Pereira chaired the meet, NCP legislator Gilbert Mendonca, mucommissioner nicipal Suresh Kakani and Deputy Mayor Noor Jajan Hussain took part in the meeting which had been organised on the insistence of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Most of the representatives voiced their dissent against any form of tax, including LBT or Octroi, but as a mid-way solution in the event of a logjam, a section of associations have suggested imposition a minimal surcharge on the existing Value Added Tax (VAT). “After the introduction of VAT, and the subsequent hike, we had been assured of riddance of other local taxes. However, despite being one of the highest revenue generators with a revenue of Rs.70,000 crore towards VAT in the current fiscal, the state government is still demand-

ing local taxes from us, which is unacceptable,” said the General Secretary of the Mira Bhayandar Small Scale Industries Association, Omar Kapoor. It should be noted that the MBMC will fall short by Rs.168 crore a year if LBT is scrapped in the state. While the twin-city has around 33,000 traders who have registered for LBT, around 100 civic personnel have been deployed in the various LBT departments. “It is true that LBT is a major source of revenue generation for the civic body, however a large section of traders are not comfortable with the self-assessed, account-based tax pattern. I have spoken at length with members of the business community and will convey their sentiments to the CM,” assured the Mayor. “To get rid of the draconian private Octroi regime, the business community had reluctantly agreed to LBT, but this tax structure is nothing less than a Octroi check-post at your doorstep,” said Anti-LBT crusader Umesh Pai. After the abolition of Octroi, the MBMC, alongwith its Nanded and Jalgaon counterparts, were among the first three corporations in the state where LBT was introduced on an experimental basis from April 1, 2010.

wo days after the assault inside Li Bai in Palladium hotel, the cops have not yet register an FIR in the case wherein three young revellers were beaten up. On Saturday night, the three victims were slashed with broken bottles. The incident took place when one among the three victims, Rubaina Ali Khan, spotted two unidentified women dancing in the restricted area behind the bar counter and Khan immediately asked them to go to the dance floor. But the two beat Khan and her two friends, Kunal Avanti and Kevin Kumana, who had rushed to help her. Ajay Patankar, senior inspector of NM Joshi Marg police station, said, “After

According to eyewitnesses, a black car knocked down morning-walker Adikrao Patil, but the car's number and make are not yet known. The BKC police has managed to get CCTV footage from the Financial firm building nearby but the footage is not clear. According to BKC cops, at the time of the incident, many locals including a shop owner were present at the spot but no one has come forward with constructive inputs. Investigation Officer in the case, Chaya Kedare, said, “We have asked Worli Traffic Department to pro-

receiving information from the victims, we have made an entry into the police station's diary. Further, we have told the victims to register an FIR, without which the police will not able to prove the case.” During the party in the bar on the 37th floor of the hotel, one among the two women first threw her wine glass at Khan. When her friends – Avanti and Kumana – rushed to help her, they too were attacked, as the second woman broke a bottle and slashed them. The three victims were rushed to the Breach Candy Hospital. Meanwhile, the police have started a probe into the incident, as they have recorded the statements of the victims in the hospital.

Revenge act? By Zuber Ansari 44-year-old lady has filed a molestation case at the Vakola police station against a lawyer as she alleged that the lawyer threatened to rape her. According to sources from the Vakola police station, the arrested accused has been identified as Kesri Jharkhand Tiwari (29), who stays with his family at Ram Sanjivan Dubey Chawl in Parsiwadi locality in Kalina. The victim knew the accused well and are neighbours. On Thursday, BMC officials landed up at the victim's residence and gave her a demolition notice for the illegal construction she had undertaken. The victim got suspicious of her lawyer neighbour complaining to the BMC against the illegal construction. She later told the police

that while on her way home, Tiwari abused her and threatened to rape her publicly. Advocate Kesri Tiwari said, “Yes, I have complained against her illegal construction, but I have not molested her or abused her. She has made false allegations against me. I will move the High Court for quashing the FIR.” The police said that the victim had earlier registered a complaint against the lawyer alleging that he wanted to demolished her room. Senior Police Inspector from Vakola police station Vinayak Mulay said, “On the basis of complaint, we have booked the accused on Thursday. He was produced before the court and got bail. We have booked him under section 354 and are doing further investigations.”

from other sources also and as such is financially well off. In spite of the aforesaid position, the NCPA without notice, has put to auction antiques and collectibles from the estate of philanthropist Dr. Jamshed Jehangir Bhabha and his brother, nuclear physicist Dr. Homi Bhabha. By putting into auction various belongings of the said bungalow, paintings and artworks made by Dr. Homi Bhabha along with various artifacts and cutlery. All these belongings were sold to wealthy foreign clients for a whopping sum running into tens of crores of rupees in proceedings. In view of such action and on the part of NCPA, it really came as a rude shock to historians and scientists. Had Dr. Jamshed Jehangir Bhabha, brother of Dr. Homi

Bhabha, a slightest idea that the NCPA put to auction the various belongings of his brother, he would not have bequeathed the same to the NCPA. So we are seeking this court's intervention in directing the respondents to declare the iconic bungalow as heritage structure and prevent the NCPA from auctioning it.” While hearing the petition on Monday, the bench comprising of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sonak refused to grant the stay of auction of the bungalow. Though the court fixed June 23, 2014 as the next date of hearing, the High Court assured that after going through the submission of documentary evidence, the court can cancel the auction if it is satisfied with those documents.

Power shortage in Delhi: Cong blaming BJP hilarious T

HE Congress was in power at the Centre for the last ten years and Congress leader Sheila Dixit was the chief minister of Dlehi for the last 15 years. During all these years it was stated there was water and power shortage in Delhi. Sheila Dixit was giving some unconvincing excuses whenever there were complaints about water or power shortage. The truth is there is no shortage of power – there is only shortage of lines to get and distribute power. If at all anyone is to be blamed, it will be none else but the Congress which sat over the problem and did nothing. It is therefore quite hilarious that the Congress party is now blaming the BJP for power shortage. It is holding continuing protests in Delhi. It is blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party for the shortage of power. Another party which is also blaming the BJP is the Aam Admi Party. It is also holding protests in Delhi. Aam Admi Party was also in power along with the Congress in Delhi but it did not start doing something about the power shortage. Both of them are training their guns at the BJP – sensing that the party would soon end President’s rule and have assembly elections. People of Delhi can see who is the real culprit. The BJP which has come to power at the Centre only three weeks ago, cannot be expected to provide Delhi the required power. The Centre’s minister for power has pointed out where things have gone wrong all these years. In spite of the huge problems involved, he has declared that the power shortage would be tackled on an emergency basis and the problem would be solved to a large extent in 20 days. It is quite sad that the Congress is hoping that by carrying out flimsy attack on BJP, it can capture the Delhi assembly. Last time, it got just eight seats in a house of 72. The AAP showed some promises, but it made the mistake of deciding to capture power at the Centre. Its chief Arvind Kejriwal thought perhaps he could be the power minister of India. The hopeful, broomstick image AAP created has vanished now. The BJP will come to power in Delhi with a brute majority and soon afterwards, power shortage will become a thing of the past.

HEN Narendra Modi broke down during the election campaign while hailing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a pro-Hindu outfit, as his mother I thought it was an emotional outburst. And I felt assured when he said after becoming India’s Prime Minister that he would take along with him all the 125 crore Indians on the path to development. But as the party unfolds its programme, I find that it is only a cover up of the divisive strategy that the RSS has formulated. Modi projects an image of unbiased person while the BJP-cum-RSS takes steps to dilute pluralism. The RSS is already posting its trusted men as members of different commissions or at key positions. The youth from the cadres are being recruited for lower assignments. Since bureaucracy tilts in the direction to which the wind blows the BJP and RSS are finding no resistance in implementing their agenda. Sharad Pawar, former Agriculture minister, who was also the chief minister of Maharashtra, is justified in his remark that after the BJP’s victory communalism is beginning to be visible all over. And this is only in the first fortnight of Modi’s government. It is yet to run the full course of five-year term. What happened in Pune, the most liberal city in Maharashtra, indicates the forces which have run amuck. An extremist Hindu group killed Mohsin Sheikh, a 28-year-old IT manager, following the posting of derogatory photographs of Shivaji and Bal Thackeray, founder of extremist Shiv Sena. Mohsin was a suspect, with no evidence and proof.

Ideal opportunity True, the BJP condemned the murder. But this was an ideal opportunity for Prime Minister Modi to assure the Muslims, feeling insecure, that his government would see to it that the perpetrators were brought to book quickly. Even when specifically requested for a word of sympathy for the victim’s family Modi kept quiet. This attitude should not come as a surprise. As Gujarat chief minister in 2002 when more than 200 Muslims were killed with the complicity of the administration, including the police, he never expressed regret. In fact, Modi threw at the face of criticism a clean chit he got from a magistrate court at home. Till today he has not said sorry. His regret at

the murder in Pune would have gone a long way to assuage the feelings of Muslims and strengthen the idea of India based on the concept of pluralism. People like me want to assure the Muslim community, roughly 15 to 16 crore, that it has nothing to fear because India follows the constitution which guarantees to every citizen equality before the law. There are courts, the media and liberal voices which are on the side of the Muslims if the community becomes a target. This was seen when the Babri masjid was demolished and the Gujarat antiMuslim riots took place. Those who have asked for Article 370 giving a special status to the state of Jammu and

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar Kashmir are the same elements which are anti-Muslim. Article 370 is as old as the constitution, more than 65 years. But since Jammu and Kashmir is a Muslim majority state, they have found the atmosphere during the Modi regime conducive to challenge the state’s status. They do not know the history; nor are they interested in finding out the facts. When the British paramountcy lapsed in August 1947, the choice before roughly 560 princely states was either to integrate with India or go with the newly constituted Pakistan, taking into consideration the religion of the majority of subjects. The ruler could stay independent if he so desired. Jammu and Kashmir’s ruler Maharaja Hari Singh belatedly joined the Indian union even though the state’s majority population was Muslims. My reading is that Kashmir would have gone to Pakistan if it had been patient. But it first sent tribal and then the regular forces to annex the state. The maharaja

NE would have thought that all works, whether of the Quakers, of Garrison, of Ballou, or of Helchitsky, asserting and proving as they do, on the principles of the Gospel, that our modern world takes a false view of Christ’s teaching, would have awakened interest, excitement, talk, and discussion among spiritual teachers and their flocks alike. Men of the most diverse views, believers, and, what is surprising, unbelieving liberals also, as though by agreement, all preserve the same persistent silence about them, and all that has been done by people to explain the true meaning of Christ’s doctrine remains either ignored or forgotten. But it is still more astonishing that two other books, of which I heard on the appearance of my book, should be so little known, I mean Dymond’s book “On War,” published for the first time in London in 1824, and Daniel Musser’s book on “Non-resistance,” written in 1864. It is particularly astonishing that these books should be unknown, because, apart from their intrinsic merits, both books treat not so much of the theory as of the practical application of the theory to life, of the attitude of Christianity to military service, which is especially important and inter-

esting now in these clays of universal conscription. People will ask, perhaps: How ought a subject to behave who believes that war is inconsistent with his religion while the government demands from him that he should enter military service? This question is, I think, a most vital one, and the answer to it is specially important in these days of universal conscription. All—or at least the great majority of the people—are Christians, and all men are called upon for

MATTER & SPIRIT military service. How ought a man, as a Christian, to meet this demand? This is the gist of Dymond’s answer: “His duty is humbly but steadfastly to refuse to serve.” There are some people, who, without any definite reasoning about it, conclude straightway that the responsibility of government measures rests entirely on those who resolve on them, or that the governments and sovereigns decide the question of what is good or bad for their subjects, and the duty of the subjects is merely to obey. I think that arguments of this kind only obscure men’s conscience. I cannot take part in the councils

signed the instrument of accession in favour of India to get its forces to stop the murders. He transferred only three subjects—Defence, Foreign Affairs and Communications—to India.

Intractable problem The state retained other subjects. Article 310 is the codification of that understanding. If the union of India wants more subjects, it is for Jammu and Kashmir to decide because it joined the union on that condition. The union cannot have more subjects without the state’s consent. Therefore, the RSS which has propelled the demand for the abolition of Article 370 is acting illegally. In fact, things have now come to such a pass that the settlement has to have consent of three parties—India, Pakistan and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. If a referendum were to be held today, the valley of Kashmir would vote for an independent state. Jammu with the majority of Hindus would like to integrate with India and the Ladakh, with the Buddhists’ majority, would want to have the status of a union territory directly under New Delhi. All these considerations have made the problem intractable. In any case, the RSS should not play politics when it claims to be a cultural organisation. I am reminded of the ban imposed on it on January 30, 1948, after Nathu Ram Godse, an RSS man, assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. Then in 1949 when negotiations in response to the appeals from the RSS to lift the ban led to an agreement between the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and RSS in which the latter gave an undertaking that the “RSS will not engage in political activity” and that the “RSS will engage only in cultural activities.” But then Patel, not satisfied with the RSS undertaking, demanded that it incorporate the promise not to engage in political activities in their (Sangh’s) constitution, to seal the agreement and to freeze RSS permanently from political activities. That was in 1949 and subsequent to that the government lifted the ban on the organisation. However, in a shocking betrayal, the RSS led by its sarsanghchalak chief, Mohan Bhagwat, indulged in aggressive political activity from June 2013 in efforts to foist Modi, formerly a RSS pracharak, in the post of Prime Minister of India. The result is before you. of government, and therefore I am not responsible for its misdeeds. Indeed, but we are responsible for our own misdeeds. And the misdeeds of our rulers become our own, if we, knowing that they are misdeeds, assist in carrying, them out. Those who suppose that they are bound to obey the government, and that the responsibility for the misdeeds they commit is transferred from them to their rulers, deceive themselves. They say: “We give our acts up to the will of others, and our acts cannot be good or bad; there is no merit in what is good nor responsibility for what is evil in our actions, since they are not done of our own will.” It is remarkable that the very same thing is said in the instructions to soldiers which they make them learn—that is, that the officer is alone responsible for the consequences of his command. But this is not right. A man cannot get rid of the responsibility, for his own actions. And that is clear from the following example. If your officer commands you to kill your neighbor’s child, to kill your father or your mother, would you obey? If you would not obey, the whole argument falls to the ground, for if you can disobey the governors in one case, where do you draw the line up to which you can obey them? There is no line other than that laid down by Christianity, and that line is both reasonable and practicable. — Leo Tolstoy

Football World Cup opener: Don’t blame referee

Japanese referee was right in showing the Brazilian Star Neymar a yellow card as that the first infringement instead of being sent out of the field. When the government of the day utters such statement like "the previous government did nothing", even though it must have lasted more than one full term does it want to hide behind a lame excuse or does it really have a genuine point. By giving such statements does the government not seriously question the decision of the janta who must have elected the same "ineffective" government after it failed to deliver in its first term? Is it not then insulting the IQ of a common voter who probably made a wrong choice the last time (electing the “useless” sarkar and give it a second term). Instead of wasting its time blaming the previous regime or inventing new excuses, the government of the day should in all sincerity look to solving the problem at hand.

IF the previous experience in the matter is anything to go by, then the common man must have understood what the PM means by “bitter economic pill”. ‘Preity’ girl’s ugly allegations! IT is sensationalism at its very best and actress Preity Zinta's molestation charges against exboyfriend and co-owner of Kings XI Punjab is nothing but a publicity stunt to be in the news now that her film career has almost ended. The timing of the allegation two weeks after the incident too raises questions of ulterior motives as why this delay when the same should have been reported on the day of the incident. Also, is it really possible to molest a top actress without anybody noticing in a packed Wankhede stadium with top security in the stadium which gives the impression of ulterior motives. Even if you don’t play football, mean that you can’t be as agile as a football player. ! ! it doesn’t ! & some unique exercises that will make you as fit as a footballer Dev Goswami Shirley Mistry tell you about

DIABETIC EYE PROBLEMS

Diabetes Mellitus is a disorder of sugar metabolism. The blood sugar levels increase due to deficiency of insulin and if left unattended various body organs are damaged. One of the most commonly affected organs is the eye. How Can Diabetes Affect The Eye? Diabetes can lead to the development of Cataract, Retinal damage and Glaucoma. Refraction: As the blood sugar levels fluctuate the spectacle power of a diabetic patient can change frequently. Cataract: Diabetic patients are more likely to develop Cataract. Retinal Damage: The retinal changes seen in diabetics are called as Diabetic Retinopathy. Glaucoma: The new vessels that form on the retina and the angles of the eye cause the intraocular pressure to rise causing irreversible damage to the optic nerve.

>> If you want to be as fit as your favourite footballer, incorporate the following exercises in your workout

F

ootball is one of the most intense sports, for which you need stamina, agility, body balance and sprinting power. So, it’s no surprise that footballers are some of the fittest people in the world. Today, we tell you about some common exercises that footballers perform to stay in shape. This is not a set workout — each of the different exercises have their own benefits. Most of them work your legs, but some also give you better balance, agility and stamina. If you’d like to work on these areas, incorporate these exercises in your workout:

This is a fairly simple exercise to perform. However, it is quite intense, as you’ll discover after you perform a few rounds of get-ups. It increases your agility and

gives your legs the power to explode into a sprint at a moment’s notice. Apart from that, it also works your abs, back and thighs. Lie down on your back. Keep your body relaxed — there is no set posture/ starting position for this, except lying down on the ground. Count 1-3 and as you reach three, get up as quickly as possible and without wasting a second, sprint for few meters. Rest for a few seconds and then repeat.

You’ll need props for this one as well — cardboard boxes will work fine. This exercise helps improve your stamina and increases your ability to run faster. It will also work your gluteus, abs and arms. Continued on pg 14

CATARACT Once developed, cataract has to be removed surgically alone and no medicines can treat it. Surgical removal is by a process called Phacoemulsifiaction, where no Injection is given and no stitches are required. Since the incision is very small, risks are minimal, healing is fast and most patients are back to normal activities in about 48 hours. With the implantation of special lenses (IOL), patients can benefit from spectacle freedom as well

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Retina is the back part of the eye, which is prone to damage in Diabetic patients. High sugar levels make the blood vessels of the retina leaky, causing blood to seep out into the retinal layers, affecting the vision. Also Diabetic patients are prone to Vitreous Haemorrhage and Retinal detachment. Diabetic retinopathy is detected by a routine eye examination. Many patients may be unaware of the problem as the disease is without any symptoms in the early stages. Clinical examination is further supported by tests like; Fundus Flourescein Angiography ; OCT of macula

How Can Diabetic Retinopathy Be Treated? Various treatment options are available depending on the severity of the disease. Treatment may be in the form of: Intravitreal injection: This helps regress the new blood vessels, it also reduce the retinal swelling and often help to improve sight in 7 to 10 days. The injections are safe and painless. Retinal Laser Photocoagulation: Retinal laser treatment helps to reduce the oxygen demand of the diseased retina thereby causing the new vessels to shrink and stop further damage to the retina. Vitrectomy: This is a surgical procedure by which the blood that has leaked into the vitreous cavity (Eye gel) is cleared. In most patient vision improves by this surgery. One can return home on the same day of surgery. A stitch in time saves nine is most appropriate here as the treatment is simple, if the problem is detected early and gets more complicated with the passage of time. Therefore it is very important that all Diabetic patients undergo regular eye examination, along with a good control of Blood Sugar, Lipids and Blood pressure Krishna eye centre with its branches at Parel, Dadar and Sion is well equipped to diagnose and treat Diabetic eye problems with some of the latest equipments and a team of highly qualified doctors.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2014 Stand a few feet away from the first box and start jogging towards it. l As you near the first box, increase your running pace to a sprint, pass the box on your right and then suddenly move into the gap between the first and second box. l Pass the second box on your left and move into the gap between the second and third box. l Keep running in and out, till you reach the last box, where you have to take a U-turn and repeat. l Run as fast as you can to get the best results, but remember that if you turn with too much momentum, you might sprain your thighs. l

>> The hurdle run is one of the most common exercises, performed by teams world over

hops This exercise uses the same set-up as the hurdle run. It is slightly more difficult and gives your calves an intense workout apart from improving your coordination and stability. l Use the same line of boxes that you set up for the hurdle run. l Jog towards the first box and instead of running over it, hop over it, keeping both your feet close to each other. l Once you land, hop over the second box again without separating your feet. l You need to keep your feet together for the duration of the exercise. l To increase the intensity further, do a zigzag run after you’ve hopped over 3-4 boxes.

sprinter sit up This exercise gives your core, shoulders, arms and hamstrings a great workout in one move. l Lie down on your back, with your arms by your side and your elbows bent at a 90° angle. l As you sit up, twist your upper body towards the left and touch your left knee to your right elbow, and swing your left arm back. l Come back to the starting position. l Repeat it on the other side, touching your right knee to your left elbow and swinging your right arm back at the same time. l This completes one repetition, so perform the exercise 4-5 times. Continued from pg 13 « Set the boxes in a straight line at intervals of 4-5 feet. Set them in a way that the thinnest side of the box is facing up. The thinner the box is, the better it is. l Jog towards the first box and quicken your pace as you come near it. l While moving over the first box, lift one leg (whichever one is in the air) as high as you can. Try to get your thigh parallel to the ground. l With the next box, repeat the same motion with your other leg. l While moving over the box, move your arms vigorously in their natural running motion. l Once you reach the end, keep up your pace, continue sprinting for five seconds and then slow down to a halt. l

meDicine ball squats This exercise will give your legs, shoulder and core an explosive boost of power. l Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart, stretch your arms and hold a medicine ball in front of your hips.

>> Stand on one foot and draw imaginary letters to increase your body balance

Drawing alphabets This is one of the best exercises to improve balance and stability. It will also work all of your leg muscles, especially your butt. l Stand on one foot with the other foot extended out, in the air, as pictured above. l Use the foot that is in the air to draw imaginary letters. Start with A and make your way to Z. l Draw as many letters as you can before you feel like you need to put your leg down. l The aim should be to complete the alphabet without shaking too much or putting your foot down mid-way.

box jumps Box jumps work your knees, core, hamstrings and calves, giving your lower body an intense workout. l Place a sturdy box that is around a foot or two feet high, one step in front of you. l Assume a squat position, swing your arms and use the squat to propel yourself as you jump and land on the box. l As this is an intense exercise, start with one set of three repetitions and work your way up.

Now, go into a low squat, with your weight on the back of your heels. l In one swift motion, come back to the starting position, bend your arms and bring the medicine ball close to your chest. l Now, jump and throw the medicine ball towards the ceiling, stretching your arms straight above your head. l As the ball comes down, snatch it while it’s in mid-air and use the momentum of the ball to return to a squat. l Repeat around 10-12 times. l

Zig-Zag run The zig-zag run is an intense form of running, where you’ll be working your calves and thighs. The benefit of this exercise is that you develop superior balance and agility. While the name is selfexplanatory, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. l You’ll need to use a prop to make this exercise easier — big stones, empty boxes, anything will do. l Set around 5-6 empty boxes (or stones) in a straight line, approximately five feet away from each other.

>> Box jumps make for an intense exercise that work your lower body

« know more: Foods that make you look tired While certain foods can keep your skin healthy (turn to page 16-17 to find out which ones to snack on), others will make it look dull and tired. Yamini Walia tells you what foods you should be avoiding

W

ith our fast-paced lives, we all end up looking a little tired by the end of the day and no makeup or concealer can hide dark circles and puffy eyes. If you’ve been sleeping enough and drinking enough water, you may need to take a look at your diet to see what’s making you look so tired. Read on to find out what foods you need to avoid.

Breakfast Boosters If you are tired of eating cornflakes and toast every morning, amp up the most important meal of your day with these easy, but fun breakfast recipes, says Shirley Mistry a Fruit Bowl

ingredientS

No, we aren’t trying to market a bowl of cut fruits. A fruit bowl, usually made with Acai berries, is the best way to start your day, as it packs in proteins, fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, without weighing you down with too many carbohydrates. It keeps you full for hours (we speak from personal experience), tastes like frozen yoghurt and keeps your sugar cravings at bay — well, temporarily at least. Acai berries aren’t easily available in India, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t whip up a similar fruit bowl!

l 1 cup milk (almond, soy, or regular). l 1 cup water. l ½ cup quinoa. l 2 apples, grated. l ½ tsp ground cinnamon.

ingredientS l 10 chunks of any frozen fruit such as

Method Combine the water and quinoa and bring it to a boil. Cover it, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, till the quinoa seeds become translucent. l Add the milk, apple and cinnamon and stir well. l Simmer for another 2-3 minutes, until all the ingredients are combined. Serve hot. l

bananas, mango, peach or pear. l 4tbsp (heaped) of thick yoghurt. l A selection of fresh fruits, cut into

Method

apple Quinoa porridge Quinoa belongs to the spinach family, so it is no wonder that it has made it to everyone’s list of superfoods in the past few years. It fights cholesterol, keeps infections at bay, contains all nine amino acids that your body needs to repair itself, is gluten-free and also contains omega-3. The apples in this recipe provide fibre and sweeten the porridge naturally. So, if you are fed up of eating oatmeal porridge, try this recipe instead.

Method Clean the sweet potatoes thoroughly, wrap them in foil and bake them till they are fully cooked. This should take around 40 minutes at 180°C, depending on the size of the sweet potatoes. l Pour some oil in a skillet and cook the spinach till it wilts and all the water has evaporated. l In another bowl, break the eggs and whisk them with a pinch of salt and pepper. l Add the eggs to the pan and scramble them with the spinach till they are fully cooked. l Next, slice each sweet potato lengthwise (but not all the way through) and spoon the scrambled eggs equally into each potato. l Top each potato with a few cherry tomatoes and avocado pieces before you serve them. l

Easy to put together, this recipe puts an interesting spin on the classic egg breakfast. While you can use any ingredients that you have on hand, these are the healthiest options.

l Purée the frozen fruit and yoghurt in a

blender, until the consistency resembles that of gelato. l Spoon the mixture into a bowl and top it with fresh fruit pieces of your choice. l Sprinkle sliced almonds and chia seeds and serve.

l 4 sweet potatoes. l 4 eggs. l 2 avocados, chopped. l A handful of spinach. l 1tbsp olive oil. l Salt and pepper to taste.

BreakFaSt egg Bowl

small pieces. l A handful almonds and walnuts. l 1tbsp chia seeds.

ingredientS

StuFFed Sweet potato A breakfast of champions, this recipe will put a stack of pancakes to shame. Since it takes longer to make than the other recipes, you should save this one for a leisurely weekend breakfast. This recipe is packed with protein, vitamins and minerals, since the eggs, tomatoes and avocados and the sweet potatoes contain nutrients such as iron, vitamin B6, C and D, as well as magnesium. ingredientS l 8-10 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half.

Salt While consuming a small amount of salt won’t harm you, if your meal is high in salt content, you will end up looking more tired than usual. The sodium in the salt dehydrates your skin and dries it out It’s a good idea to switch to a lowsodium alternative.

l 2 eggs. l A handful of spinach. l A handful of sliced mushrooms. l 8-10 cherry tomatoes. l 4 slices of lean ham. l Salt and pepper to taste.

Method Arrange the ham, spinach and mushrooms in a bowl and crack the eggs over them. You can also place them side-by-side. l Bake the egg bowl in an oven for 5-7 minutes, or till the eggs are cooked to your liking and the spinach has wilted. You can also microwave the bowl for 3-4 minutes. l Serve by itself, or with crusty bread to sop up the eggs. l

Fried FoodS Fried foods are your skin’s worst enemy. They contain oil and transfats, which clog your arteries and stiffen your blood cells, making your skin look dull and tired. They also lead to weight gain, so beware! alcohol One of the major causes of dehydration is the excessive consumption of alcohol. If you are dehydrated, your skin will appear dull. If you drink regularly, alternate each alcoholic drink with water, so that you remain hydrated. Spicy Food Love spice? Unfortunately, you need to avoid spice as much as possible in order to avoid looking tired. Even though speeds up your metabolism, spice causes skin irritation and leads to an uneven skin tone and diluted blood cells. This makes your skin look older which in turn makes you look tired. So, avoid foods that are excessively spiced. artiFicial Sweetener Artificial sweeteners are as bad as sugar. They contain aspartame, which can cause joint pain and ironically, make you crave more sugar. Instead, opt for foods with natural sugars, such as fruit, to avoid looking puffy. proceSSed cold cutS Cold cuts are delicious, but they also make you look tired. The preservatives in them lead to skin inflammation, making your skin dull. So, cut back on the amount of cold cuts you eat and opt for fresh produce.

Indulge in some curd Dairy contains protein, which is why it makes for such a good snack. It’s extremely good for your skin as it makes you resistant to wrinkles and lines. So, when you’re hungry, snack on yoghurt instead of a packet of wafers.

Sweet tooth Next time you’re feeling a bit peckish, pick up a bar of chocolate. Cocoa hydrates you skin, and dark chocolate contains flavonol, an antioxidant. It will make your skin more supple, which is why a lot of body butters and lotions contain cocoa butter.

2 Go pro-biotic Did you know that the state of your intestine affects your skin? The healthier it is, the healthier your skin will be. Take a pro-biotic to keep your intestine (and in turn, your skin) healthy.

4 Work with walnuts Walnuts contain essential fatty acids and are usually used as a scrub. However, when they are consumed, they can improve the elasticity of your skin and help you get better complexion.

>> If you can’t sleep at night because you are worrying about work, you are overthinking

Mostly As You may have a problem here, because you think way too much about the smallest of things. You’re over cautious, paranoid and completely stressed out. People aren’t always trying to one-up you and they may be too busy to reply to a text message as soon as you send it. Instead of worrying so much about your health and the social impression that you’re making, relax a little and you will be less stressed and more likeable. Mostly Bs Don’t worry, because you’ve got quite a happy-go-lucky nature. You don’t take things too seriously and that’s just the way to be. However, we hope you are not too casual about important matters, especially when it comes to physical or mental health.

Several gestures and actions that we accept as part of life, could be putting you or the people around you at risk of infection. Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to see whether your daily actions are to blame

A

recent study that was published in the Journal of American Medical Association, concluded that doctors should stop shaking hands with their patients, as that could transfer diseases and germs. The study also found that not all doctors wash their hands afterwards and even when they do, the alcohol-based gels used for hand sanitisation, don’t always kill all the germs and microorganisms from their hands. While this isn’t very surprising, considering that doctors meet and greet sick people all day, doesn’t that get you thinking of how you might be spreading or getting infected by germs through the daily of course of your life? Take this quiz to find out: 1. At a business meeting, do you greet everyone with a handshake, even people who look a bit under the weather? a. Yes. b. No. 2. When you’re eating out, do you wipe all cutlery, plates and menu cards before you use them. a. No. b. Yes.

I

f you’ve picked mostly As for all the questions, you should read on as we explain how everyday actions can put you at risk of contracting diseases, and tell you how you can ensure that you keep germs at bay:

PhySICAl ContACt Physical contact is, obviously, one of the easiest and most common ways diseases and germs spread. Whether you’re shaking hands or hugging someone who seems perfectly healthy, you could be at risk of bacteria and infections. Similarly, kissing can also spread diseases. However, this doesn’t mean you should avoid any and all physical contact. Just make sure you follow proper hygiene so that you’re not infecting others, and wash your hands and face when you come in contact with other people, especially if they are u nwell.

3. When you meet close friends, do you usually greet them by giving them a peck on the cheek? . a. Yes. b. No. 4. When you’re saying goodbye at a party, do you hug everyone — including strangers you’ve never met before? a. Yes. b. No. 5. When you pet dogs or cats — stray or otherwise — do you make sure that you wash your hands immediately af terwards? a. No. b. Yes. 6. If your computer at work, or even at home, is shared by several people, do you ensure that you clean the keyboard and mouse (with a disinfectant) at least once a week? a. No. b. Yes. 7. Whenever you lend someone your phone,

Mostly As You may not be aware of it, but your daily habits are putting you in contact with a lot of germs. While you don’t have to withdraw into a cocoon and be scared of touching everything, sharing phones and shaking hands when you are already sick will aggravate the problem — and is something you can avoid without seeming like you’re being rude or fussy. You may also be putting other people at risk with your habits, so make sure that you do your little bit to stop the spread of germs. Mostly Bs You are well aware of the different ways that germs can get to you and do a good job of keeping yourself protected against them. Wiping items that are shared between people and being prudent when it comes to eating with a person who is sick will ensure that you don’t end up getting infected or don’t spread germs to your family members. Just be careful that you don’t get paranoid — a little sharing is alright! or are using someone else’s phone, do you give it a quick wipe? a. No. b. Yes. 8. Do you clean your credit/ debit card before and after you hand it over at the billing counter? a. No. b. Yes.

phone from someone, give it a quick wipedown just to be safer. The same applies to a shared computer, which you should disinfect at least once a week. Also, don’t share food and water with someone who you know is ill. You might feel like you’re being rud e, but a polite ‘no’ when someone offers you their lunch, will go a long way in keep you safe from diseases.

MAIntAIn GooD hyGIene Washing your hands is one of the best ways to ensure that your everyday actions don’t put you at danger. Did you recently play with your pet? Wash your hands. Reached home after a bout of shopping? Wash your hands – interestingly, currency notes, credit/debit cards and bills are another way you might be coming in contact with germs. The easiest and most practical way to deal with this is to just wash you hands.

W

e live in such a fast-paced city, that it’s no wonder that we’re always looking for shortcuts to get through everything in a jiffy. While scheduling a gym session before you head to work is a great idea, landing up at your office drenched in sweat, is not. These tips will ensure that you reach your office looking presentable and professional, while still being able to squeeze in a workout before, a busy work day.

Gym baG essentials You may be carrying your gloves and ankle supports to the gym, but don’t forget to carry deodorant, shower gel, talcum powder and of course, a change of clothes too. These are necessities that will help you freshen up and prevent body odour. For those who didn’t know, talcum powder absorbs sweat much better than deodorants do and also keeps you smelling great. As far as a change of clothes is concerned, don’t limit it to your shirt and trousers. Carry fresh underwear and a change of socks, to prevent odour as well as reduce the risk of infection, since moist skin is a breeding ground for bacteria.

steam is not enouGh We’re hoping that you already know this, but just in case you don’t — a few minutes in the steam and sauna at the gym might cleanse your pores and help you relax, but it’s not enough! Don’t make the mistake of towel drying yourself afterwards and thinking that you’re ready to go to work. Make sure that you have a shower (even a quick one is fine), so that you can wash away all your sweat. A plain water shower is okay when in you’re in a hurry, but use a shower gel otherwise.

Dry yourself properly

In a hurry! You might have managed to squeeze a quick workout into your busy day, but it will leave you red-faced and sweaty, unless you’ve factored in time to freshen up – especially if you’re heading straight to office afterwards. Dev Goswami brings you simple tips to freshen up quickly

Towel drying your body in a hurry will invariably leave some parts moist, especially your hair and the folds of your skin, which results in body odour. Water also promotes the growth of bacteria, which will react with your sweat and produce a foul smell. To ensure that this doesn’t happen to you, towel dry yourself thoroughly and take extra care to dry your hair. Sprinkle a little talcum powder and spray some deodorant the moment you dry yourself, to ensure that you smell fresh throughout the day.

use Dry shampoo We’re sure that you never thought your hair could stink, but unfortunately,it can! This happens when your scalp has accumulated too much sweat, if you have a dandruff problem or when your hair is unwashed and dirty. You can remedy this problem by using a dry shampoo — you won’t need water and it just takes a few minutes. This is an important step that ensures that you are clean and refreshed, from head to toe.

« Know more: post-pregnancy weight loss

The weight you put on while pregnant can be alarming, but it’s important to lose it in a healthy way. Shirley Mistry tells you how to make sure your weight loss doesn’t harm you or your baby

C

elebrities such as Victoria Beckham, who went back to a svelte size six within a few weeks after delivering a baby, set a horrible example when it comes to postpregnancy weight loss. Being a new mother can be stressful in itself, add it to it the negativity surrounding your weight gain and you could be harming yourself. A new study suggests that mothers who are preoccupied and stressed about body image issues are not only damaging their body by going into overdrive to get rid of the weight, but also risk passing on negative attitudes to their children. In a report published by the Government Equalities Office in the UK, Dr. Susie Orbach and Holli Reuben, a body image specialist, have stated that mothers who go on extreme diets to shed the extra pounds, pass on their negative approach and attitudes about food to their children, especially to their

daughters. It is crucial to build a bond with your baby immediately after giving birth. So, instead of focussing on losing the extra kilos, spend some time with your baby. Don’t try and lose the baby weight in six weeks. In fact, experts say that it is ideal to lose baby weight spread over six to nine months after delivery.

What to remember

Here are some tips to ensure that you lose your pregnancy weight safely: l It is safe to start working out only six weeks after delivering your baby, so make sure that you don’t start too soon, or you could do yourself more harm than good. l Consult your gynecologist before you start any exercise routine. l Remember, that while some women may lose weight quickly, it may take your body longer, as

everyone’s rate of burning fat is different. So, don’t panic or get alarmed. l Listen to your body. Your workout should make you feel more focussed and energised, not tired, cranky and angry. If you feel like your workout is taking too much of a toll on you, simplify it, or reduce the frequency. l Make sure that you drink plenty of water, before as well as after your workout. Staying hydrated has a direct impact on your ability to breastfeed. l Focus on quality more than quantity. It is wiser to set realistic goals and work towards them in a gradual manner. For example, it may be more feasible for you to talk a walk thrice a week with your infant in tow, rather than do an intense workout at the gym thrice a week. The more realistic your goals are, the more likely you are to achieve them.

Seeing the truth W There are several myths surrounding your eyesight that you should not buy into. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you separate fact from fiction when it comes to caring for your eyes

>> Working at a computer in an air conditioned environment can make you suffer from computer vision syndrome or dry eyes

hether you are of the opinion that eyes are the mirror of the soul or the jewel of the body (according to Henry David Thoreau), you can’t deny that they’re an extremely important part of your body. Yamini Walia tells you about the first speciality clinic for Vitiligo in Mumbai, which was opened by noted surgeon and dermatologist, Dr. Sanjeev Mulekar

N

oted surgeon and dermatologist, Dr. Sanjeev Mulekar, has opened the first ever speciality clinic for vitiligo in the city. He has opened similar clinics in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and has trained dermatologists in the US, Canada, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia. He has also established a vitiligo surgical section at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, USA. Vitiligo is a common disease that affects 1-2% of the global population. It poses several psychological and social problems, not only in school, but also when it comes to marriage and employment. Vitiligo, also known as leukoderma, leads to the de-pigmentation of certain areas your skin, leading to pale, white patches. It can affect any part of your body, including your eyes, hair and mouth. The colour of hair, skin and eyes is usually determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning. The condition is not life-threatening or contagious, but its appearance can be embarrassing. The primary services that are rendered at the clinic include in-depth consultations, counselling and group meetings. Apart from just treating the condition, the clinic also provides psychological support for those who cannot be treated for medical reasons. Dr. Sanjeev Mulekar tells us, “The procedure involved can cure roughly 90% of vitiligo patients. There are around 700 million vitiligo patients worldwide. Home units of photo therapy, camouflage or covering makeup along with Melanocyte Transplantation are the latest surgical treatments.” *For more details log on to Dr. Sanjeev Mulekar’s website, www.mulekarvitiligoclinic.com

dear Barbara, I apply makeup every day and even though I clean my brushes regularly (twice a week), the bristles begin to fall off barely six weeks after I buy them! Also, although the makeup products that I use haven’t changed, my skin has been breaking out into pimples very quickly. Since I keep my brushes clean, I don’t know what is causing them to wear down so quickly and cause breakouts too. Please help! — samantha sharma, Goregaon

Say cheeSe! Do you grimace when you see a camera, because you’re scared of how terrible your teeth will look if you smile too widely? Yamini Walia shows you a few ways in which you can whiten your teeth at home

W

ith most of us indulging in at least one cup of coffee or tea every day, having yellow teeth is a common problem. Dealing with it can be quite expensive, as professional whitening solutions are not always affordable. Also, some solutions and treatments contain harmful chemicals. But, don’t worry, there are several home remedies that will help you get rid of teeth discolouration. Read on to find out more.

MixtuRes

>> It is important to clean and dry your makeup brush thoroughly dear samantha, Your pimples may have been caused by unclean makeup brushes, but your skin could also be reacting to weather changes, or other products that are part of your skincare routine. Since the bristles have been falling out very quickly in spite of you cleaning them twice a week, you could be cleaning them incorrectly. When you wash your brushes, make sure that the bristles face downwards. If they are facing upwards, the water gets lodged in the roots of the bristles and loosens the gum that secures them to the handle, making them fall out quicker. Also, once the base gets damp, it takes very long for it to dry. Since bacteria thrives in wet spots, this could be the cause of your breakouts. dear Barbara, I hardly wear makeup, but I still use a makeup remover before washing my face with a face wash, just to get rid of all the residue and cleanse my skin thoroughly. However, I have found that most storebought cleansers — whether they are creambased, or oil-based — irritate my skin, leaving it sore and red. Should I eliminate them from my skin-care routine? — Neha chaudhry, churchgate dear Neha, It is great that you take such good care of your skin. However, it seems as though the products that you use don’t suit your skin type. While this could happen for a number of reasons, we suggest avoiding chemical makeup removers, substitute them with olive or almond oil. A tiny amount goes a long way, as it helps to get rid of any traces of makeup and dirt, while leaving your skin nourished.

Baking soda and Lemon Juice paste Baking soda helps to balance the pH level in your mouth, which can fluctuate if you eat too much acidic food. This will keep your teeth protected and reverse discolouration. All you need to do is mix a few teaspoons of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice or water together to make a paste. Put a small amount of this mixture on your toothbrush and brush your teeth for a few seconds. Keep the mixture in your mouth for a minute and then rinse it out. If you are

using water, you can leave it in your mouth for a little longer. Do this everyday for best results. strawberry, salt and baking soda Strawberry, with its rich vitamin C content, can help get rid of the plaque that makes your teeth yellow. To make this mixture, combine 1-3 strawberries with a pinch of salt and ½ tsp baking soda. Mash the berries to make a pulp before you add the salt and baking soda. Apply the mixture on your teeth and rinse it out after five minutes. The mixture may not look appealing, but applying it every night will help prevent yellow teeth.

NatuRaL pRoducts coconut oil rinse It has been proven that rinsing your mouth with coconut oil makes your teeth whiter. Swirl the oil around in your mouth for about 10-15 minutes and then spit it out. Rinse your mouth and brush your teeth. This will whiten your teeth, keep your breath fresh and promote gum health.

petroleum jelly Coat your teeth with a layer of petroleum jelly to prevent stains. This may sound a bit gross, but it is extremely effective. However, opt for this technique only under extreme circumstances, or when all else fails. Do this every day for best results. cheese Here’s another reason not to shy away from the camera. It may sound a little ridiculous, but eating a bit of cheese after every meal can actually help to prevent tooth decay. Cheese, just like milk and yoghurt, keeps your teeth sparkling and free of cavities, since it contains minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and protein, which protect the enamel of your teeth. Also, hard cheeses help clean your teeth by stimulating saliva.

quick tips Follow these tips on a daily basis to take care of your teeth and to ensure that they stay white: snacks: Opt for crunchier fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots to clean your teeth while you snack. Rinse: After every meal, make it a point to brush your teeth. If you are at work and are unable to do so, have sugar-free chewing gum to ensure that your teeth remain stain-free. Lip Gloss: This is perfect for when you’re going out. Gloss that contains blue undertones will make your teeth look shiny, boosting your appearance. Steer clear of matte-finish products, as they make your teeth look dull or yellow. Whitening toothpaste: Using a whitening toothpaste will help deal with any new stains that your teeth might have developed over the past few days. Brushing before you go out is a simple way to ensure that your teeth look their best.

In terms of purchasing power parity, US will have a revenue productivity of two and half times compared to China and the Indian companies reaped more benefits there as they expanded on hardware.

ast Monday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the final Basel III framework on liquidity standards, including guidelines on the minimum liquidity coverage ratio (LCR), liquidity risk monitoring tools and LCR disclosure standards. “These guidelines are credit positive for Indian banks” says Moody's. The guidelines’ key aim is to promote bank liquidity. The RBI will phase in the LCR with a minimum requirement of 60% starting 1 January 2015, rising 10 percentage points annually until It is 100% at 1 January 2019. The LCR is designed to address short - term liquidity risk by ensuring that banks hold sufficient cash and other liquid assets to meet obligations in a 30 - day market stress scenario. The RBI framework aligns broadly with the framework of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. At the same time, the central bank encouraged banks to adopt a ratio higher than the prescribed minimum to promote better liquidity risk management. Earlier this month, on June 3rd, the RBI lowered the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) requirement– the portion of net demand and time liabilities that banks are mandated to invest in government bonds or other unencumbered approved assets – to 22.5% from 23.0%. Once a bank meets the minimum SLR ratio, remaining government bond holdings can be considered high - quality liquid assets. Under the guidelines, up to an additional 2% of banks’ net demand and time liabilities within the SLR requirement can also count toward banks’ high - quality liquid assets levels. The guidelines also require banks to increase LCR disclosures, including information on funding concentration by borrowers, products and currencies in annual financial statements starting with the financial year ending 31 March 2015. These guidelines, according to Moody's “will encourage banks to improve asset liability manage-

ment because of the penalties associated with maturity mismatches, especially in short - term buckets. The requirement creates a credit - positive incentive for banks to focus on growing their retail deposits an d reducing reliance on short – term wholesale funding”. The RBI’s December 2013 quantitative impact study on a sample of banks to assess their preparedness for the Basel III liquidity ratios revealed that their average LCR varied between 54% and 507%, suggesting that the banks are already broadly compliant with the 1 January 2015 LCR minimum. WPI inflation at 6.0% for May 2014 has been the highest since Dec’13 and can be taken as indicative of inflation moving onto to an upward trajectory By A Business reporter

I

nflation pressures for the country have re-emerged in May, raising concerns that the moderation in prices seen in recent months could be rather short-lived. Inflation in May’14 measured by the wholesale price index (WPI) increased to 6% (y-o-y), largely driven by higher food and fuel prices. The WPI for the month was 0.8% higher than that of the previous month's 5.2%. This increase in price levels has been much higher than anticipated and brings to fore worries of faster and higher price rises in the coming months with monsoons anticipated to be below normal in the

ongoing season and growing geopolitical tensions both of which could have a bearing on domestic price levels. Commenting on the numbers, Care ratings says “WPI inflation of 6.0% for May 2014 has been highest since Dec’13 and can be taken as indicative of inflation moving onto to an upward trajectory in coming months. India’s vulnerability to an increase in inflation in coming months has increased on account of higher oil prices with the escalation in Geo-political tensions (the sectarian unrest in Iraq has led to oil prices rising to 9 month highs) and the subnormal monsoons thus far (48% below normal) faced by the country. High crude oil prices and

subnormal monsoons could derail the nascent recovery of the Indian economy RBI focus on inflation control could lead to a tightening of monetary policy as has been hinted by the central bank in its last monetary policy. Thus, a cut in interest rates is unlikely in the forthcoming monetary policy meet.” Says Sidharth Birla, President, FICCI “Inflation remains a key impeding factor to the overall growth prospects of the economy. With food and fuel prices being the key driving factors, upside risks to inflation continues. The sub par monsoon outlook for this year could put pressure on food prices going ahead”

Export Volumes Need To Be Pumped Up With the new government getting down to business, focus is back on growth and creating jobs. An increase in exports at this juncture can provide the most effective fillip to growth, says Crisil By A Business Reporter

T

he Indian government will unveil the foreign trade policy for the medium term in a few weeks. The new commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the government seeks to improve exports and thereby create job opportunities in the economy. “This time around, the exports bar will need to be set much higher even to simply maintain the previous impact of exports on job creation and income generation” says Crisil Research. Why is it so? According to it “Gross export numbers are misleading in terms of the impact they have on jobs and incomes. We use the OECD value added database to draw implications of export growth for India. As a % of GDP, domestic value added in exports (DVA) - the proportion of

exports that is truly produced within India - has fallen to 78% in 2009 from over 90% in 1995, according to OECD. This has lowered spillover impact of exports on employment and income generation”. At the sectoral level, DVA in exports is now as low as 51% in other manufacturing items, 73% in chemicals and 76% in transport equipment. To add to this, the employment intensity of exports has been falling over time with the share of service exports rising rapidly. Employment intensity of service sectors, for example business services which include IT/ITES is one of the lowest, given high productively of labour in this sector. Therefore, with both domestic value added and employment intensity of exports falling, a dramatic increase in the absolute size of exports is essential to match or exceed

Indecisive CM Responsible For Traders Woes, Says FAM By Dominic Rebello

ince the “last thirty years the trading community is opposing the regressive tax levy, which is known as Octroi. Except Maharashtra there is no such tax levy in any part of the world. Octroi and similar other taxes have been abolished across the world as it was a breeding ground for corruption,” said Mohan Gurnani, President, Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM). After taking cognizance of the strong opposition to Octroi by the trading community, the Maharashtra Government decided to replace the same with a Account based levy known as Local Body Tax (LBT). Except Mumbai rest of the Municipalities have replaced Octroi with LBT. FAM, has been agitating for the last sixteen months against the government with a demand for the abolition of LBT and Octori. “We are

ready to pay taxes, but there should be no corruption. The laws of LBT will be a breeding ground for corruption. It will give rise to Inspector Raj, which should be reduced. We therefor request the government to take a decision and come up with a law that is simple to follow and which is corruption free,”said Gurnani. We met the CM, Prithviraj Chauhan, but he was not able to take any decision, and has asked the Municipal Corporations to take a call on it. How can the state government ask the Municipal Corporation to take a decision? We therefore pray to the government to save Maharashtra from corruption, he added. The 3 options offered by the government are unfeasible to the trading community. The first option was to replace LBT again with octroi. The second option was to replace it with multiple taxes, while the third option was that the LBT will be under the Sales tax department.

the spillover effect of exports as seen in the past. Also in the medium term, the composition of exports will need to change with a focus on labour intensive exports. With the new government getting down to business, focus is back on growth and creating jobs. An increase in exports at this juncture – when domestic demand remains sluggish - can provide the most effective fillip to growth. India’s exports of goods and services improved to USD 470 billion ($319 bn goods +$152 bn services) in 2013-14 from USD 450 billion a year earlier, and are expected to pick up further this year. But the impact of exports on job creation and income generation depends on several other things. Broadly, the spill-over impact of exports on the domestic economy is determined by three factors – the DVA component of exports, the employment intensity of export sectors and the absolute size of exports – all of which determine the extent of job-creation. Crisil believes that “Given the falling DVA, exports growth will have to be much faster to make the same impact on employment seen earlier. In other words, a percentage point increase in exports will have a lesser multiplier effect today on job creation and growth. The focus thus has to be on increasing the volume of exports. The commerce and industry ministry had in 2011 set a target of $500 billion exports by the end of last fiscal. We have missed this target, but going forward only reaching this target will not suffice”. The government is likely to unveil the foreign trade policy for the medium term in a few weeks. Given the decline in the DVA, “the exports bar will need to be set much higher to get the same multiplier effect on the economy. Also over time the composition of exports will need to change with a focus on labour intensive exports”, concludes Crisil.

ATIONAL Centre for Performing Arts has various slots for Hindustani music, wherein the ‘Umang’ slot is for young performers. Last week, two youngsters, one vocalist and another sitarist appeared on this platform. Ninad Deo, the 30-yearold Pune based singer belongs to a musical family. His grandfather, Rajabhau Deo, was a veteran teacher and a singer who taught at the Benaras Hindu University. His aunt, Alka Deo Marulkar, is a wellknown singer and she once headed the music department of the Goa Kala Academy. “My initial training was with my grandfather,” said Deo in an interview. After his grand father passed away, he trained under the late Madhusudan Kanitkar of the

Jaipur Attrauli gharana. Kanitkar trained popular singers like Manjiri Asnare and Priyadarshini Kulkarni. “My grandfather shared a good equation with him which induced me to approach Kanitkarbua who had a large repertoire of the Jaipur Attrauli gharana compositions. Since 2012, Ninad Deo has been learning from music diva Kishori Amonkar. It is a great privilege to learn from her. Her approach is indeed broad minded. She does not insist that I unlearn what I have done before. She only asks me to add whatever she teaches to my previous training,” said Deo. He sang the raga Khokar which is a

Ananda Karekar plays Shree Yogi By Sandeep Hattangadi

T

HERE have been innumerable born in Maharashtra, right from Sai Baba of Shirdi to Akalkot Swami Samarth, Saint Tukaram to Saint Pundalik, Saint Dnyaneshwar to Saint Eknath, Sant Sakubai to Sant Janabai. The latest is 'Shree Yogi'. There have been several who have tried to win over people with their miracles but there have been very few who have won the hearts of the audiences with their teachings and among them, Tembye Swami leads the list. Originally named Yaati Vasudevanand Saraswati Tembye, he is known among his disciples as Tembye Maharaj. The film 'Shree Yogi' sets out to show the life and times of Tembye Swami Maharaj who was born in Sawantwadi in Konkan. Tembye Swami has also written the popular hymn 'Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digam-

bara'. Produced by the banner of 'Maya Mauli Nirmitee' by Mauli (Uttam) Mayekar, the film is directed by Chandrakant Lata Gaekwad and shows the evolution of Tembye Swami from a poor family to the heights which he reaches in his mission to

spread spiritual awareness. Actor Ananda Karekar who shot to fame as a stand-up comedian with the popular show 'Comedy Express' has played the role of Tembye Swami Maharaj. He says, “It’s a great honour for him to play the revered saint and doing a

serious role after being slotted as a comic actor is a blessing”. He reveals, “I researched a lot to play this role by reading books on the saint and discussing with the director who had done intensive research on the saint”. Citing Ashok Saraf and Dilip Prabhavalkar as his favourite actors, Ananda seems to be a star in the making, with films like ‘1234’ and ‘Gamat’ about to release. 'Shree Yogi' also stars Girish Pardesi, Arun Nalawade, Ravindra Mahajani, Yatin Karyekar,Uday Tikekar, Uma Sardeshmukh, Sharwari Lohkare, Abhijit Chouhan, Kishore Chowgule, Dr. Vilas Ujjwane, Amol Bawdekar, Narayan Jadhav, Asit Redij, Trupti Gaekwad etc. Praveen Dhavane and Chandrakant Lata Gaekwad have written the screenplay and the dialogues for the film. Nandu Honap has set to tune the lyrics and the film is set for an early release.

creative quality pertaining to the theme and melody too. Swati Tirunal also has compositions in Hindi which prove his mastery in various languages. Shankara Shrigirinatha described the magnificence of Lord Shiva and his cosmic dance. Being the granddaughter and disciple of Guru Kalasadan Mani, dance is in her genes as she dances with comfortable ease and

versatility. L

AUSSANE: Formula One champion Michael Schumacher was transferred from a French hospital to a facility in Switzerland today after emerging from a coma following his devastating ski accident in December. In a surprise announcement, the retired German racing star’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said he had left hospital in the French Alpine city of Grenoble, where he had been treated since December 29 when he slammed his head on a rock while skiing with his son and friends. The 45-year-old was transferred to a hospital in the Swiss city of Lausanne where he will be undergoing further treatment, hospital spokesman Darcy Christen told AFP. Stressing the hospital’s commitment to privacy, Christen said Schumacher’s family was with him “in a space created especially to ensure their intimacy and to ensure the best possible care.” Schumacher, his wife Corinna and two children live in Switzerland in the small town of Gland. While news of his accident in the French skiing resort of Meribel attracted throngs of global media to the Grenoble hospital, his departure Monday morning was very discreet and no press conference was sched-

uled to further brief the media. In a statement, the seven-time world champion’s spokeswoman Kehm said his family wanted to “thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.”

M

UMBAI: Goan Sports Asscoaition (GSA) outplayed Coorg XI, winning by a comfortable 7-1 margin in their Third Division meeting in the MHAL (Mumbai Hockey Association Limited) League at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate. The dominant Goans raced to a 5-0 first half lead and were well served by Ajay Kumar who scored a hattrick. Robindro Singh got a brace while K. Singh and Bharat K. added one each for the Goans. M. Carriappa netted the lone goal for the losers. Later in the day, Bombay Republicans romped to a comfortable 6-2 win against Catholic Gymkhana in a Second Division encounter. Rajat Sharma struck three goals while Suraj Shahi netted two and Praneet Naik one to complete the tally for Republicans. Captain Gavin Vandrine scored both the goals for Catholic Gymkhana.

AN ANTONIO: San Antonio Spurs clinched their fifth NBA Finals title after wrapping up the seven-match series with a 104-87 victory in the fifth game and ending Miami Heat’s two-year reign at the top, here today. The Spurs capped off a dominating campaign in style with a comfortable win in the end, much to the delight of their home crowd, who lined up the streets till late at night to celebrate their team’s victory, chanting slogans “Go Spurs Go” and dancing. The 22-year-old Kawhi Leonard, who was awarded the most valuable player in 2014 NBA Finals, had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Manu Ginobili also impressed with 19 points to his credit. Patty Mills stole 17 points, while knocking down five threes. Four of those threes were in the third quarter when the Spurs opened up a 21point lead. Tony Parker (16) and veteran Tim Duncan (14) also chipped in with important points for their team. For the Heat, star player LeBron

“For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye,” she said. She gave no further details about Schumacher’s condition, which have been kept under a tight lid since his accident. The racing star underwent two operations to remove life-threatening blood clots after the freak accident that shocked the world, before being plunged into a medically induced coma. His family announced at the end of January that drugs used to keep him in his deep sleep were being reduced with a view to bringing him back to consciousness. Since then, Kehm had said he was showing short moments of consciousness, but few other details had filtered out and it is still unclear as to what the future holds for Schumacher. Doctors say some patients only show signs of improvement several years after their accident, and in an April interview with German broadcaster ARD, Kehm said that “a medical prognosis is not possible” due to the nature of his brain injury. Schumacher is well known for his love of adrenaline sports, and even after retiring from the high-risk world of racing, he kept pursuing

thrill-seeking hobbies as the holder of a pilot’s license, an accomplished motorbike rider, parachutist, skier and mountain climber. He survived a motorbike accident in Spain in 2009, during which he suffered head and neck injuries but was released from hospital after just five hours. The latest accident proved near fatal, but in several statements released to the media, his wife and children had said they remained confident that the man who defied death more than once on the track would pull through. In her statement Monday, Kehm said Schumacher’s family wanted “to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes”. “We are sure it helped him,” she added. Schumacher, who made his debut in 1991, dominated Formula One. A ruthless and at times controversial competitor, the German won an unprecedented 91 races, and seven world titles including five in a row with Ferrari from 2000 to 2004. He first retired aged 37 but was unable to resist the lure of the track. In 2010, he came out of retirement but failed to re-enact his previous performances, and he quit for good in 2012.

IRPUR: A confident Indian cricket team would look to keep the momentum going in its favour as it gears up to complete an expected series victory against minnows Bangladesh in the second of the three-match ODI series here tomorrow. Having won the rain-truncated lung-opener fairly comfortably, Suresh Raina’s boys are eyeing an unassailable 2-0 lead against Bangladesh which will help them get the much required confidence

before the England ODI series comes calling. A series against Bangladesh is a thankless one as one doesn’t get credit for a win but faces a lot of backlash if there is a freak defeat. The ‘Men In Blue’ will have to guard against complacency as they go for the kill in the second game of the series. The most assuring aspect of India’s victory in the first ODI has been the form of the newly-formed opening pair of Robin Uthappa and

EW DELHI: Continuing his good run of form, pistol shooter Jitu Rai clinched a silver medal in the ISSF World Cup in Maribor, Slovenia, after Ayonika Paul bagged her maiden international medal as a senior shooter by settling for a bronze in the 10m air rifle event. In the finals of the 50-metre pistol event, Rai missed out on the gold medal by 0.1 point having shot 193.1, after aggregating 568 in the qualification round. The gold medal went to Serbia’s Damir Mikec, who shot 568, while the bronze was won by Japanese Tomoyuki Matsuda for shooting 172.9. The 27-year-old shooter from Lucknow had last week bagged a silver medal in the men’s 10metre air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Munich.

James once again led with 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting, but he got little support from his teammates. While Chris Bosh had 13 points, Dwayne Wade continued his disappointing show with just 11 points.

The hosts though did not have an ideal start today as they looked a bit rusty to begin with. In fact after the first quarter, it was the two-time defending champions Heat, who were leading 29-22.

Ajinkya Rahane. Both played contrasting but equally important knocks in the final context of the match. Uthappa seems to have carried forward his red-hot form from the Indian Premier League as he treated the Bangladesh bowlers with scant respect during his halfcentury knock. Rahane was also a picture of confidence during his innings of 64. Cheteshwar Pujara was the victim of an umpiring blooper and

would surely like to make it count as he is likely to get a full series this time. However, time is running out for the Saurashtra ‘Run-Machine’ as far as cementing his place in the limited overs side is concerned. Skipper Raina and Ambati Rayudu would be hoping to get another decent hit in the middle but obviously not at the expense of a poor opening start. It will be interesting to see whether India make a few changes or not as far as their bowling department is concerned.

While round 2 saw some fierce battle being fought between the two sides, the Heat soon lost steam and the tide started to turn in favour of the Spurs. The home team soon erased an early 16-point deficit and at the half-time were leading 47-40 with full capacity crowd of 18.581 backing them. The Heat managed just 11 points in the second quarter, shooting 4of-15 and turning the ball over four times. The Spurs became even more offensive in the third quarter, while the Heat could score only 18 points. Scoring three-pointers, the San Antonio team turned the seven-point halftime margin into a 19-point lead, making it 77-58 heading into the final frame. The Heat made a brief attempt to make a comeback in the fourth and final quarter, cutting the deficit to 14 points, but the Spurs proved far more superior as they simply denied the visitors any hope of a third straight championship.

Syria activists brave war to watch World Cup

BEIRUT: Young Syrian opposition activists living with the constant dangers of more than three years are war are braving bombardment by government forces and jihadists' threats to watch their favourite World Cup teams. In Raqa province, controlled by powerful jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), one young activist and avid football fan risked the extremists' anger to sneak out to watch Spain play the Netherlands. "Members of ISIL raided the cafeterias on the first day of the World Cup, and forced the young people to go pray," said the activist who identified himself as Abu Ibrahim.

ative ease, and they grew bolder in attack. Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero was solicited twice before half-time, saving bravely from Izet Hajrovic after a pass by Zvjezdan Misimovic and then plunging to his left to repel a header from Senad Lulic. The best Argentina could muster in response was a Javier Mascherano shot that Asmir Begovic boxed away. Sabella took decisive action at half-time, sending on Higuain and Fernando Gago for Maxi Rodriguez and Hugo Campanaro and reverting to the tried and tested 43-3. Initially it was Bosnia who continued to press, with Hajrovic twice working Romero from range. But Messi was beginning to see more of the ball, and he twice teed up Aguero, who blazed over before testing Begovic with a side-foot shot. A ballooned freekick suggested that Messi was feeling his way into the tourney.

Croatia players shun media after nude pics leaked online S

ALVADOR (BRAZIL): Left embarrassed after their nude pictures were leaked online by paparazzi, Croatia's footballers at the ongoing FIFA World Cup have refused to talk to the media. The no-talk move comes after two photographers hid behind bushes near the team hotel to click the pictures of players while they were taking a shower and leaked them online. "How would you feel if someone took naked pictures of you?. They are adamant that they won't speak to you lot any more," Croatia coach Nico Kovac told a press conference in Praia do Forte here. "I don't know whether the silence will end tomorrow or last until the end of our World Cup campaign," he added. Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren and former Man-

BELO HORIZONTE (BRAZIL): Samuel Eto'o has missed two days of training with an injured knee and is battling to be fit for Cameroon's World Cup Group A game against Croatia, coach Volker Finke said. "He has a problem with the right knee that he already had at the end of the season with his club Chelsea," Finke told a press conference yesterday. "He did not train yesterday nor today," the coach added. Cameroon play Croatia on Wednesday in Manaus needing a victory to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the last 16.

TERESOPOLIS (BRAZIL): Brazil striker Hulk left a training session due to a muscle injury in his left leg but said he expects to be fit to play Mexico tomorrow in his team's second World Cup match. Hulk practiced for less than 15 minutes before leaving the field. He said the injury wasn't serious and "hopefully" it wouldn't keep him from playing in the next match. "I felt a small discomfort and decided to leave as a precaution," Hulk said. "I was already thinking about the next match, it's only two days away and in the World Cup you don't want to miss any match. I hope to be ready so I can help the national team again." Hulk said he had the injury before the opening win over Croatia, when he was replaced late in the match, and felt it again after a few shots on goal on Sunday. He walked off the field without a limp, but then sat down on a bench and lowered his head in apparent dismay. Hulk, who plays for Zenit in the Russian league, put his hand on his left leg when team medical staff arrived to treat him.

Argentines invade Rio beach in World Cup dream

RIO DE JANEIRO: Argentina fans have flooded Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach, camping out, downing drinks and firing up barbecues as they dream of World Cup glory in their rivals' turf. Some 30 motor-homes line the famed Atlantica Avenue with Argentine license plates showing they drove a long way to see their heroes Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria. The rivalry between the two South American nations reaches fever pitch when it comes to football. Argentines say Diego Maradona is the greatest of all time, Brazilians have Pele. This time, it's Messi versus Neymar. The contest could very well be settled with a potential clash of the titans at the July 13 final at the Maracana on July 13, a dream scenario for many fans. Christian Roman, 36, drove nearly 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) from Buenos Aires in his 62-yearold father Ruben's black and yellow taxi.

‘Shaheen The Camel’ turns soothsayer for World Cup

DUBAI: If 'Paul the Octopus' successfully predicted the outcome of matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, then 'Shaheen the Camel' has taken on the mantle of a booming animal oracle this time around in Brazil. Shaheen, an Emirati camel, who was discovered by a Gulf News videographer before the start of the mega event, has so far got all the predictions spot on. There are many more animals in the guessing game, but Shaheen is the only one with a 100 percent record after predicting the winners of the SpainNetherlands and the England-Italy contest. Sitting on the desert sand, the camel is made to choose from the flags of competing nations placed in front of the animal with a football in between and it conveniently picks the winner with its teeth. The names of other predictors are Big Head the Turtle, Flopsy the Kangaroo, China's Pandas, Nelly the Elephant, Roo the dog. But camel or no camel, teams would be practising hard to rely on actual field play and talent than taking the predictions too seriously. For the uninitiated, Paul the Octopus died soon after the conclusion of the 2010 edition that was won by Spain.

‘BRACEFUL’BENZEMA France beat Honduras as goalline technology makes history

P

ORTO ALEGRE (BRAZIL): France beat 10-man Honduras 3-0 in a bruising World Cup clash on Sunday where goal-line technology awarded the first international goal in history. Three minutes into the second period, the German-manufactured GoalControl system was called into action when a volley from Karim Benzema, who ended the night with two goals, came back off the post. The ball bounced back into the area before hitting Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares. He then tried to scoop the ball to safety, but Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci awarded the goal -classed as an own-goal -- after consulting the instant technology. Benzema was the star man as

he opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Wilson Palacios had been sent-off for two bookable offences on Paul Pogba. Benzema then played a major role in his side's historic second goal and the Real Madrid striker rounded off a fine afternoon with an emphatic finish 18 minutes from time. Victory moves Didier Deschamps' men above Switzerland on goal difference in Group E after the Swiss beat Ecuador 2-1 earlier in the day with the two European sides set to meet next on Friday in Salvador. The game had begun in bizarre circumstances as neither sides' national anthem was sung before kick-off, but normality was restored once proceedings got un-

Blaise Matuidi had the first clear chance on 15 minutes when Mathieu Valbuena's free-kick was only partially cleared and the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder's effort was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Valladares. Antoine Griezmann was then also denied by the crossbar for Les Bleus as he rose highest to meet Patrice Evra's cross but his header clipped the woodwork on

its way over. Benzema saw another good opportunity fly over moments later as he headed off target after a fine counter-attack involving Matuidi, Griezmann and Valbuena. Ricci had a big call to make midway through the half when Pogba clashed with Palacios. The Juventus midfielder lashed out at Palacios after appearing to be stamped on, but Ricci showed only yellow cards to both. Palacios was only to last another 16 minutes in any case as he stupidly bundled Pogba over inside the area a minute before half-time and was shown his second yellow card. Benzema stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick to register his seventh goal in as many games for France and his first in a World Cup.

Mexico meeting stirs bad memories for Brazil F

ORTALEZA (BRAZIL): Brazil striker Hulk insists revenge is not on the agenda as the World Cup hosts bid to all but secure their place in the last 16 against rivals Mexico tomorrow. Mexico shattered Brazil's dream of winning the only major prize missing from their honours list two years ago, when they stunned the South Americans 2-1 to claim the Olympic gold medal in London. But Hulk insists there is no question of Brazil looking to settle a score as they face the Mexicans at Fortaleza's Castelao Stadium. It is the same venue where they met in the group stage of the Confederations Cup last year when Luiz Felipe Scolari's side claimed a 2-0 victory. That success means a measure of revenge has already been exacted, and forward Hulk insisted that Brazil will only have one thing on their minds come kick-off on Tuesday. "In the Confederations Cup we tried to think only about winning

Chelsea player added: "It will certainly be as difficult as last year. In the World Cup there is an extra desire to win and I hope we can do so again this time. Mexico are a very different side to Croatia. They play the ball out from the back well and are very good on the counter-attack."

the game and it will be the same this time. If we think about revenge it could cause us problems," said the powerful forward, who scored in the Olympic final clash. Nevertheless, the Olympic defeat left its mark on him, Thiago Silva, Marcelo, Oscar and Neymar, the five members of Brazil's 2014 squad who featured at

Wembley. "Of course I was very sad. It is a medal that Brazil have never won and we lost the final. Mexico are a very good team. I just hope the Selecao, in the next Olympics (in Rio de Janeiro), can win gold," said Oscar, one of the standout performers in Brazil's opening 3-1 win against Croatia in Sao Paulo on Thursday. Of Tuesday's encounter, the

Germany's Thomas Mueller, right, watches as the ball go past Portugal's goalkeeper Rui Patricio to score his side's fourth goal during the Group G World Cup soccer match between Germany and Portugal at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil.

S

ALVADOR, BRAZIL - Thomas Mueller's hat-trick inspired Germany to a 4-0 mauling of 10-man Portugal in their opening World Cup Group G match on Monday. The Germans delivered a sizzling attacking display that underlined their tag as strong title contenders and the match, billed as a clash of European heavyweights, was over as a contest by halftime. Two Mueller goals and a thumping Mats Hummels header blew away a Portugal side whose misery was compounded by a needless 37th minute red card for Pepe. The defender, furious at what he felt was "simulation" by Mueller following a slight collision between the two, was sent off for pushing his head into the German's face as he sat on the ground. EW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an invitation to the FIFA World Cup final in Brazil on July 13. The Brazilian embassy told NDTV that Mr Modi and other leaders have been invited by President Dilma Rousseff to watch the football final, scheduled a couple of days before a summit meeting of "Brics", a grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It is not known yet whether Mr Modi, who ended a two-day visit to Bhutan today, will fly to Brazil early to watch the final in Rio de Janeiro. Pepe faces possible three-game ban after red card P

ortugal defender Pepe faces the possibility of a three-match ban for violent conduct after being sent off in the first half of Monday's World Cup Group G game against Germany. Pepe, who has a long history of losing his cool and lashing out at opponents, leant into Germany striker Thomas Mueller with his head, making contact and applying pressure in a needless altercation that could bring him a stiff punishment. The Brazil-born centre back had caught Mueller in the face in an innocuous-looking challenge but took umbrage as Mueller went down, returning to the forward and thrusting his forehead against the German's. Serbian referee Milorad Mazic had no hesitation in dismissing Pepe in the 37th minute.

A red card brings a mandatory one-game ban at the World Cup but that is usually extended in the case of a sending-off for violent play. Pepe's latest episode of violent conduct follows a series of similar incidents in recent years playing for his club Real Madrid, including one in a La Liga match against Getafe in April 2009 which earned him a 10-game ban.

CUIABA (BRAZIL): Out-of-sorts South Korea face a Russia side desperate to prove a point in Cuiaba tomorrow. The Korean's fortunes have nose dived since the heady days of 2002 when they turned the formbook on its head by becoming the first Asian side to make it through to the semi-finals. But before reaching their eighth consecutive World Cup, they struggled in qualifying, squeaking home only on goal difference. They also lost World Cup warm-ups to Tunisia, 1-0, and more worryingly a 4-0 drubbing by Ghana last week. Coach Hong Myung-Bo is fretting over his Taeguk Warriors' fate in Brazil, aware that defensive frailties will make the going tough for them in a Group H also containing favourites Belgium and Algeria. Hong, 45, gained iconic status in Seoul after his side-footed penalty took Guus Hiddink's side into the 2002 World Cup last four. He insists that rather than regressing, the Korean team has made progress in the last 12 years. "The fact is that the quality of football in South Korea has developed a lot since 2002," he declared. The Koreans arrived in Cuiaba on Sunday, 24 hours before Russia. And before a training session at a local university, defender Lee Yong took time out to forecast what lay in store for him and his colleagues. "It's true the Russian team are quite technical and strong. Maybe the Russians are physically stronger than Asian sides like us but we are well prepared for this game, we're focussed," he told the hordes of Korean press. "We're well prepared for the match," he pledged. Unlike the Koreans, who are part of recent World Cup history's fixture and fittings, Russia make their return to the feast of football for the first time since 2002, when like in 1994 they failed to make it out of the group stages. Under Fabio Capello, who guided England to the last 16 in South Africa four years ago, Russia coasted through qualifying and in stark contrast to Tuesday's opposition are unbeaten in 10 games. They hold a psychological advantage going into the game at the Arena Pantanal as they saw off South Korea 2-1 in a friendly in Dubai last November. Capello's crew set off for Brazil missing one vital component of their assault on the World Cup -- captain, Roman Shirokov. The 27-year-old midfielder's failure to recover from a knee ligament injury represented a serious blow to Capello's plans, with Rubin Kazan's Pavel Mogilevets stepping in to replace him.
