The ACB had recently filed an FIR against him in connection with the scam. The raids carried out by the ACB has revealed property worth several crores. The NCP leader, later in the day, rubbished the allegations stating that he alone was not re-
sponsible for the sanctions. The decisions were taken and evaluated by the cabinet, he added. "Bhujbal will be given an opportunity to put-forth his explanation with regard to ownership of the properties. We will verify the details of the property. Based on the investigations, further actions will be decided," said a high-ranking ACB officer. An FIR has been filed by the anticorruption bureau and the raids are part of the investigation. The probe is monitored by the High Court and hence, there is no question of political interference, ACB said. The accused could face action under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The ACB is leaving no stone unturned as each search has been video-recorded and was conducted in the presence of two witnesses. The ACB had filed an FIR against Bhujbal, his son Pankaj, nephew Sameer and many state government bureaucrats in the Maharashtra Sadan case, a multi-crore construction scam pertaining to constructing a library at Kalina in Mumbai and a housing project at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.

hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday denied that the state government was indulged in any vendetta politics in the raids conducted by Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) against senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Public Works Department (PWD) minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Speaking to newspersons at Mantralaya the Chief Minister pointed out that the ACB actions were monitored by the Bombay High Court. When asked to comment upon the Bombay HC order directing the government to file an investigation report in the multi-crore irrigation scam, Fadnavis quipped “Aage Aage Dekho Hota Hai Kya” (Wait and see what happens next). Some of them were even assaulted by their brothers or fathers at their own residence. “The police department is often held responsible for the increase of crime against children and women in the city. But what can the police do if a father or brother rapes his own daughter or sister inside their residences. In such cases we arrest the accused only after we are reported about the crime by some of the family members,” said one of the senior police officers.

This will be followed by investigations into alleged purchases of coal mines in Indonesia by the Bhujbal family and their foreign visits. He added that after the ACB probe, the Enforcement Directorate is expected to step in the investigate, followed by Economic Offences Wing (EOW). Terming the Bhujbal's as 'Alibaba and Chalis Chor', Somaiya said the probe will also cover the PWD engineers and officers involved in the Maharashtra Sadan scam. Earlier, replying to queries over the raids conducted on the PWD officers, Fadnavis said the suspension of the officers has been done as per rules. Commenting upon the HC order in the Irrigation scam, Somaiya remarked that three months down the line it will be the turn of former Irrigation ministers Ajit Pawar and Sunil Tatkare to face the probe.

Uran Police arrested one teacher for sexually assaulting several students of
his school in 2012. The principal of that school was also nabbed for her alleged involvement in the crime and both of them were booked under POCSO. They were later convicted by the court and are in jail now. Dattatray Rokde, 53, a resident of Kopri village, raped and murdered a 5year-old girl, who stayed in the same building in January, 2013. He was arrested by the APMC police after two days. A special Thane court ordered him to be hanged till death just after five months. The fourth convicted accused was arrested by the Khanda Colony police. The police say that in several cases the accused and the complainant make some compromises outside that court.

World’s most expensive sandwich costs $214
THE world's most expensive sandwich -- a cheese toastie dipped in gold and costing a
whopping US $214 -- has been made at a ritzy restaurant in New York. The gold-plated sarnie is essentially a cheese toastie, but in typical New York style and can be pre-ordered two days in advance. The Serendipity restaurant in New York City is the proud owner of the new Guinness World Record. "This is the most expensive sandwich in the world. We came up with the idea to create the world's most expensive sandwich on national sandwich day," chef Joe Calderoni was quoted as saying by Daily Express. "We came up with grilled cheese because that's the ultimate in comfort food. What better way to celebrate that sandwich than with the quintessential version of that sandwich?" Joe said about his new creation. The final touches include a tomato and lobster bisque served in a crystal glass and then chefs plate the sandwich in 23 carat gold. The famous restaurant has been visited by celebrities likes Marilyn Monroe, Beyonce and Jay Z. "The bread is baked with Dom Perignon champagne, some white truffle oil with the gold. Then our grass-fed butter infused with white truffles. Then we take caciocavallo cheese - it's very rare," Joe said.

s a sequel to major fire in a refining plant's pipeline of an oil lubricant company at Wadala on last Saturday, nearly half of the petrol pumps in Mumbai are running dry and if the situation remains, the city may face more shortage of petrol, Ravi Shinde, General Secretary of the Confederation of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) told ADC, adding that oil companies will have to bring in petrol from neighbouring Gujarat state. Nearly 200 fuel stations, including nearly 45 pumps belonging to IOC and 80 odd pumps belonging to HPCL and BPCL, supply petrol to Mumbai. While over 18 lakh vehicles ply in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai region, each petrol pump supplies over 13,000 litres of petrol every day. When contacted the spokesperson of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) maintained that the situation was normal, whereas the spokesperson for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Lim-

ited (HPCL) preferred to downplay the situation. A major fire broke out in the petrol pipeline from the Pirpau terminal of Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) to the oil refineries in Wadala. The pipeline owned by MbPT, connects a refinery of HPCL with tank farms located nearby. The MbPT pipeline is used to transport liquid fuel by all companies which had started leaking a few hours before the mishap. The pipeline in Sewri was used by HPCL for transportation of its fuel and it was during the process the leakage was reported. However, HPCL spokesperson has claimed that the transported fuel be-
longed to a private lubricants company whose office is close to the pipeline. Even now conflicting versions on the cause of explosion are emerging. According to one version, the explosion caused when HPCL was pumping from its refinery in Trombay to Wadala where they have a depot. Whereas according to yet another version, the fire erupted apparently due to a burning cigarette butt thrown in the mangroves, where the fuel had leaked. The work of pumping out the residue oil in the pipeline is still on. Meanwhile due to the fire, a long patch of mangroves in the area has been destroyed.

By winning the by-polls, the numerical strength of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in the 94-member MBMC house now stands at 45. On the other hand the NCP-Congress ruling alliance has been reduced to 43 seats.

ACB says it would complete probe against Tatkare in 3 months T
he Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that it would complete the investigation against former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Sunil Tatkare for alleged money laundering and land grabbing within three months. The ACB submitted a report before the division bench of Justices N.H. Patil and S.B. Shukre on Tuesday, informing that the probe was still underway, reports PTI. The High Court, in response to a public interest litigation filed by BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, had earlier directed the ACB, city police's Economic Offences Wing and the Raigad collector to conduct
inquiry into the allegations and submit periodical reports. Somaiya had sought a CBI probe alleging money laundering and land grabbing by various companies floated by Tatkare and his relatives, mainly in the neighbouring Raigad district. The investigating agencies had time and again faced the ire of the court for failing to conduct a fair probe against the minister and his family. Somaiya has listed 51 companies formed by Tatkare which have his family members and friends as directors, and alleged that they purchased benami lands in Maharashtra and indulged in money-laundering, causing loss to the public exchequer.

While no doctor was present during the camp, Shirsekar said senior nurses and technicians from the hospital conducted the camp. “This camp was conducted at St. Anthony's Home for Aged at Bandra on June 15. While we have conducted many health camps in the past which included senior citizens, this is the first time we did it in an old age home,” said Shirsekar. “There were 60 old women whose BP, random blood sugar and Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) tests were done between 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Among these, we found around 50 percent or more than 30 patients who

hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said that a cabinet sub-committee headed by health minister Deepak Sawant would frame rules regarding setting up of an enforcement agency to implement the proposed anti-spitting law. The law envisages social punishment for those spitting in public. Fadnavis was speaking to reporters after the weekly meeting of the cabinet. The committee comprises water supply minister Babanrao Lonikar, FDA minister Girish Bapat and school education minister Vinod Tawde. The committee will submit its report in a month's time and the government may introduce the bill in the monsoon session of the state legislature. Fadnavis also announced that Rohit Deo has been appointed as associate advocate general. Dev had earlier served as associate solicitor general at the Centre.

Provide homes for displaced families T
HE Metro lines across the city can in no small extent solve the growing transport problem. Every possible effort needs to be made to provide increasing Metro transport for the citizens. Mumbai is a crowded city and with people utilising every inch of available space. With such a scenario existing in the city, it becomes difficult to construct Metro lines. Several buildings have to be pulled down to build the line. They want to do this in Shivaji Park, Dadar, Girgaum and Colaba. If they go ahead and do it, hundreds of families will be homeless. Notices have already been sent to several families to vacate. Naturally, the residents do not want to quit because they have nowhere to go. They offer residence and the authorities have to use force to make them leave. The problems of the residents have to be recognised. One fine morning they are asked to quit and they have no go but to obey the order. Is it right the authorities should throw them in the streets and expose them to rains? It may cost them a fortune to provide the hapless people alternate accommodation, but they have got to do it. It is a fact that Metro lines are highly useful and attract prior attention, but even so, if they lead to suffering of hundreds of families, there should be rethinking on the transport project. The Metro folks have a right to lay lines through buildings only if they provide adequate housing for the displaced families.

LTHOUGH the Modi government has finally come out with an official defence of Sushma Swaraj for her role in the raging Lalit Modi controversy, BJP circles are wondering whether the matter will rest here. Internal fault lines seem to have only deepened in the 72 hours since the story first broke about Sushma’s hand in facilitating UK travel documents to the former IPL czar who is wanted for questioning by the ED serious financial fraud. It is baffling indeed that it has taken the government so long to defend Sushma. Till the joint press conference addressed by Rajnath and Arun Jaitley, it was left to BJP president Amit Shah and party spokespersons to do the talking. There was not a single official word from any of the ministries involved in the matter (External Affairs and Finance) or the PMO. The government’s reticence was odd because Sushma acted in her official capacity as foreign minister, not as a BJP leader, to help Lalit Modi gain the desired freedom to travel and party. She certainly could not have assured the British High Commissioner in India as merely a BJP spokesperson that India-UK ties would not be affected if his government gave Lalit Modi the passport he so desperately wanted. No. It was her authority as External Affairs Minister that swung it for Lalit Modi. The government’s silence was making Sushma’s position untenable. With no official word forthcoming on a matter concerning the government, it seemed that the PM had washed his hands off the whole affair and Sushma would have to resign. Jaitley has now clarified that the government owns her action on the principle of collective responsibility. Yet, despite this certificate, murmurs continue in the BJP that Sushma may still quit. Apparently, she did offer to resign when she got wind that a British newspaper and an Indian TV channel were hot on her trail. She met the PM and said she would put in her papers to spare him blushes. He appears to have rejected her offer. It would seem that we haven’t heard the last word on l’affaire Sushma-Modi.
What Mamata wants, Mamata gets
D
IPLOMATIC circles have been wondering why Narendra Modi did not take any chief ministers from the Northeast to Bangladesh. The question is pertinent be-
cause one of the highlights of the visit was the inauguration of two important bus routes between Bangladesh and India. The routes connect Dhaka to four state capitals in the east: Kolkata, Agartala in Tripura, Guwahati in Assam and Shillong in Meghalaya. Modi had wanted the CMs of the all the concerned states to accompany him and be present when the buses were flagged off. But Mamata put a spoke in his grand plans. She put her foot down on the other CMs. Her condition for accompanying Modi to Dhaka was that she would be the only CM in the delegation.
brief the media after the operation. Former army chief and Union Minister V.K. Singh was the obvious choice because of his army background and because he is the minister for the northeast. But he has embarrassed the government twice already with his indiscreet tweets and remarks. The government didn’t want to take chances with him. It was felt that Rathore would be a safer bet. What happened was exactly the opposite of what the government had hoped. Rathore did a V.K. Singh on the government. Highly placed sources in the government said that he was fine till the press conference. He stuck to the brief. Trouble erupted after that. He sent out a series of provocative tweets that have lit fires in both Myanmar and Pakistan. As NSA Ajit Doval and the External Affairs Ministry rush to douse the flames, Modi may have to think about issuing a restraint order on the use of social media.
The writing was on the wall for Fin Secy Rajiv Meherishi POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath Modi must have been disappointed because he wanted the bus inauguration to be a grand event with him leading a high-powered Indian delegation of chief ministers from different regions and political parties. But Mamata left him with no choice. And what Mamata wants, Mamata gets. Modi agreed to her terms because he was keen that she accompany him, if only to signal the new bonhomie between him and the West Bengal CM.
Again, Modi embarrassed by a former ‘fauji’
I
T is ironic that Modi has once again been embarrassed by a former fauji in his council of ministers. His government is busy fighting the fires lit by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore’s tweets on the army’s anti-insurgency operation in Myanmar. Rathore was a colonel in the army. The funny thing is that the government took a strategic decision to field Rathore to
T
HE writing was on the wall for finance secretary Rajiv Meherishi when PM Narendra Modi ticked him off in front of other officials at a recent meeting. You haven’t been able to make the transition from chief secretary (of Rajasthan) to finance secretary, Modi told Meherishi in a withering tone. If Meherishi nursed hopes of being elevated to the top post of cabinet secretary, they must have died then and there. The PM was clearly annoyed. In fact, the bureaucratic grapevine says that the PM is so unhappy that he has refused to entertain suggestions that Meherishi be given a post-retirement sinecure, a posting in the Election Commission, for example. The question is whether Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje can help him out. Meherishi was quite a favourite of hers and she tried to keep him in Jaipur despite pressure from Modi and Arun Jaitley to post him to Delhi. She could offer him something in Rajasthan. It is ironic indeed that Meherishi was once said to be a hot favourite with Modi because of the manner in which he successfully implemented labour reforms in Rajasthan. But as finance secretary, he seems to have ruffled feathers in the PMO on several counts including the decision to accept the recommendations of the 14 Finance Commission.

Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi imbroglio LET us accept one reality. The giving and receiving of favours is part and parcel of politics - and not just in India. The ties of foreign minister Sushma Swaraj with fugitive Lalit Modi seem to be particularly strong, since both – her husband and daughter – have been providing legal counsel to the latter. Moreover, Lalit Modi is a master fixer, who has perfected the art of manipulating the powerful and the influential to his own advantage. It is the reason why despite being a fugitive from justice, he has not only evaded prosecution, but continues to live the high life in London and Europe. It seems surprising that a highly intelligent lady like Swaraj did not see through Modi's transparent ploy of requesting travel documents on the flimsy pretext of needing to go to Portugal to sign a consent form for his wife's surgery. In fact, it is fairly obvious that Swaraj knew precisely what Modi's intention was, but did not see any harm in acquiescing to his wish. That's what friends are for, right? — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

RTO department should order probe into the whole episode
COUPLE of days ago, I felt I was in Paris when the pvt Ola cab driver demanded Rs. 750 for a 5-minute cab ride of a mere 3 kms which reminded me of the Capital of France where I had paid a similar amount or little less while holidaying in Europe a few years back. Recently, our normal Black and Yellow taxis were on strike and the app-based aggregators like Uber and Ola Cabs were in high demand with the needy commuters having no choice but to pay the 'Ransom' fares. 'Making hay while the sun shines' seems to be the motto adopted by these pvt cab owners and it is truly an shame that sick patients, handicapped individuals, old people etc who could not travel by local trains or public transport were robbed in broad daylight. The RTO department should order an inquiry into the whole episode and such operators should not be allowed to demand such hefty ransom in the name of dynamic pricing. Also, the government should put an upper cap amount over which a service provider or a manufacturer or trader cannot charge in events of supply-demamd mismatch as they have in the developed countries.
WATER logging during monsoon gives scope for vehicles going of the roads in Mumbai and that causes lot of discomfiture to the people coming from outstation to the city. To add salt to the wound, prepaid taxis were on strike protesting demanding a ban on taxis of app-based aggregators such as Uber, Ola and Taxifosure. People coming through Railways and Airways were stranded in the wet conditions and find it very difficult to reach their destination. As some of the private operators were attacked there was confusion and even the CST terminus wore a deserted look as monsoon rains hit Mumbai Metro. he Association of Hospitals (AOH) is planning to make Mumbai a healthcare hub in India for which it has set four strategies. Revealing its plans in a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, AOH officials said their focus is not on medical tourism but to give better healthcare to people in the city. “The first strategy is to give the patients better quality care. The second is the know patient experience. The third is infrastructure and the fourth is collaborations and reputation management,” said Vice President of AOH Gautam Khanna. “For better quality of patient care, it is necessary that we have good quality doctors, nurses and staff looking after the patient. It is also the patient's first expectation that they receive good healthcare. This can be done with the help of our second strategic measure, patient experience,” said Khanna. Khanna elaborated that the conservation time spent between patient and doctor is nearly one hour.

Even after the services being restored at 9.05 am, trains were delayed by over 40 minutes. A Central Railway official said, “One service was cancelled due to unit defect at Thane station leading

Survey conducted among 380 young adults in Mumbai reveals positive attitudes regarding children and a strong, concerned voice against child labour
By A Staff Reporter
T
he United Nations in a 2014 report on young population across the globe pegged India as the leader with 356 million 10-24 year-olds. India officially now has the world's largest youth population despite having a smaller population than China. These 356 million youths will carve out the future of this nation and keeping that in mind, Child Rights and You (CRY) has decided to reach out to young adults across the city of Mumbai, to understand their perspective on issues relating to children. In a first amongst a possible series of studies amongst the youth, CRY decided to focus on the issue of child labour first given the scale of this problem in India. According to the 2011 Census child labour data, the total number of working children in India between the ages of 5-14 years is 10.13 million. This might be a smaller number in comparison with the number of children in India, but when one realises that roughly every 11th child in India is a child labourer — the seriousness of this epidemic, finally, dawns on you. In the CRY survey, youth from 60+ colleges were targeted and a team of 10 volunteers and interns conducted the interviews. The questionnaire featured 13 questions, some open-ended, some close-ended and most with multiple answers to choose from. Most questions also evolved into a semiinterview, allowing the interviewee to have short conversations with the interviewer, duly recorded. “Foreseeing this generation as the future of the country leaves us with a lot of hope. The findings of this CRY survey have indicated that the youth of today are sensitive towards children and we hope that they continue as ardent supporters of child rights, working proactively towards a safe childhood for all children across India,” said Kreeanne Rabadi, Regional Director, CRY (West).
child helping his/her family in the fields could also be classified as child labour. Is this an indication that urban youth think differently of child labour when it concerns children in a rural scenario? CRY has always maintained a twopronged approach. While working with children in urban centres is of increasing importance (and one that CRY focuses on); our outreach with partners into several nooks and corners of this nation has also made us experts in issues regarding children in rural areas. This echoes the concerns of CRY and other child rights experts that this proposed law could increase the number of child labour in the country. Considering this was a survey conducted in urban areas, it did not come as a surprise that 82% said that they felt that a child selling magazines at a signal was child labour; or that 46% said that a child delivering milk in the morning, and later attending school was also child labour. What was interesting to note was that 35% said that a child tending to cattle was child labour and 21% said that a

EW DELHI: Ram temple in Ayodhya and abrogation of Article 370, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, continue to be on BJP's agenda but any decision on them can be taken only after wide consultations, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has said. He also said the present focus of the Narendra Modi government is on good governance and development, which were ignored in the past 10 years by the previous UPA government. "Already I have made a statement on the floor of the House in Rajya Sabha. So, it is there on the agenda of the BJP because in the manifesto we said that Article 370 needs to be amended. "We have gone one step ahead. Again, I am telling the same word, that this matter should be discussed with various political parties and even certain areas where it has been benefited, they should also should be taken care of," Gowda told PTI in an interview. He said there are "so many" stakeholders who should be consulted. "Then only we can go ahead. We can't take a nasty decision or a hasty decision

The minister said now the primary aim of the government is good governance and development. "These are the very important issues. Since last 10 years, there was no gover-

OLKATA: Trinamool Congress MP and actor Mithun Chakraborty yesterday surrendered to Enforcement Directorate (ED) an amount of about Rs 1.2 crore that he had received from scam-hit Saradha group of companies for being its brand ambassador. Sources said a team of lawyers and other representatives of the actor reached the probe agency's office at Salt Lake here and handed over a Demand Draft (DD) to the investigating officer (IO) of the case. "This was part of Chakraborty's earlier commitment that he would return the funds that he had received from the group. The DD has been given to the IO of the Saradha scam probe case," sources said. They added that the agency is satisfied with the said action and the statement recorded by the actor-politician regarding his role in the operations of the group, which has now become defunct in the wake of allegations against it of perpetrating a large-scale chit-fund scam in West Bengal and other states. During his last questioning
Mithun Chakraborty by ED here in May, Chakraborty had provided the agency sleuths with a number of DVDs, CDs and scripts that he had got as part of being the brand ambassador of the Saradha group. ew Delhi: A new "smart and intelligent" database is being set up in the Income Tax department to help check tax evasion, a "menace" that is "spoiling" compliance culture, a top CBDT official said yesterday. The database will immensely improve "mining" of data as it will include all financial transactions of individuals and entities. "We just don't want to get penalty and unpaid tax from the evader. We don't want to do that. Because, for us, tax evasion is not only a menace in that sense, it is also spoiling the entire compliance culture because the people who are tax compliant feel that the system is unfair," Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairper-
son Anita Kapur told reporters. CBDT is the apex policy making body of the IT department. Kapur said though the deCBDT chief Anita partment Kapur wanted to keep the tax regime "non-intrusive", it was because not everybody was willingly compliant that IT authorities had to use the power of search and seizure. She said the database will be set up later this year and be fully operational next year. "It is called the Income Tax

JAMMU: More than 40 members of the AIIMS coordination committee yesterday took their turn as the chain hunger strike entered fifth consecutive day. The chain hunger strike launched by the AIIMS coordination committee, an amalgam of more than 70 religious, social, political, business and civil society groups spearheading agitation in support of setting up of an AIIMS in Jammu region, entered fifth day yesterday. Around 40 members from various groups, including SOS International, an organisation of the PoK refugees today took their turn to sit on strike. "We have already extended our support to the cause of setting up of AIIMS in Jammu. Business Application, and once ready, it will vastly improve data mining and business intelligence of the department and the taxman. It will be a robust database which will include all sorts of financial transactions data of an entity including human intelligence collected on a person or entity," she said. Kapur also said the department was on a drive to widen the tax net. She added there are chances that by witnessing a lax system of tax enforcement, even compliant taxpayers would "waver" from their duty saying why should they pay taxes when others can avoid it. Kapur added that "demonstrative action" by the taxman is required against evaders. "This (not catching the evader)

Rahul slams Modi for ignoring poor, says bullet trains only for those with ‘suit-boot’
anjgir (Chhattisgarh): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi yesterday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring the poor and the tribals, saying that although the government speaks of bullet trains, "only people with suit-boot" can enter these trains, not the farmers and the underprivileged. He also charged that the BJP governments at the Centre and in Chhattisgarh were acquiring land in the name of development, which has not reached the doorsteps of the poor and the tribals. "We do not want such development," he said, asserting that he
Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi will not allow such kind of development to take place. Attacking the prime minister, Gandhi said he only visits tribal and poor areas during elections to seek votes in the name of development. "I can write it down, he (Modi) will not come here be-
fore elections. When he comes, he will say 'we have brought good days. We can bring more good days so vote for us again'," Gandhi said addressing a rally here. The Congress Vice President said Modi, "who wears a Rs 15 lakh suit," prefers to go to Australia and the US. "If Modiji takes off his Rs 15 lakh suit and comes here to these villages, he will see the value of MNREGA," he said. He further charged that the Prime Minister repeatedly talks of 'acche din' and 'vikas' (development), but not of the poor. "I don't understand what kind of development is this," said Gandhi.
will encourage a system where a person who is outside the tax system will continue to remain outside the tax system," Kapur said, adding there was a large tax constituency which is not covered under the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) regime like small traders. "Such people do not file the return and wait thinking something would be done once the taxman comes calling with a search or a survey. We don't want that message to go," she said. Maintaining that chronic tax evaders will not be let off lightly, Kapur said,l"Our focus should not be collection and it should be taken to a logical conclusion which is that an evader not only pays penalty (on the tax evaded) but also be prosecuted."

"Delhi government will work towards realising the vision of the late Chaudhary Brahm Prakash. We will translate his dreams into reality," Kejriwal said while paying floral tributes to Prakash at his statue inside the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Secretariat here. Land Bill panel: Members oppose submission by pvt firm MD N
ew Delhi: Members from opposition parties today expressed reservations over the representative of a private firm being allowed to make a submission before the Joint Committee of Parliament that is going into the contentious land acquisition Bill. As it met for the fifth day to hear the views of stakeholders, some of the opposition party members strongly objected to the panel calling "private individuals with their own agenda" for the meeting, sources said. One of the members questioned why they should listen to views of people with "vested in-
terests", saying that the particular company had interest in building construction activities, the sources added. Members SS Ahluwalia said they have no objection to individuals appearing before the parliamentary panel who represent credible organisations, but private individuals cannot be allowed to push their "agenda" before it. The Joint Committee on the Right to Fair Compensation and
Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015, headed by SS Ahluwalia yesterday called representatives from organisations like Foundation for Democratic Reforms, Bhoomi Adhikar Andolan, Sree Samayaa, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, PRS Legislative Research and an individual Dhanush Kumar. Two young law students Aditya Manubarwala and Shardool Kulkarni also submitted their views before the panel. While the first two submissions went on normally, members ob-
jected when the Managing Director of Sree Samayaa, a private limited company from Mumbai, began expressing his views in favour of the contentious Bill. The MD of Sree Samayaa was cut short by with Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left and BJD members being the ones who opposed him. The opposition members also wanted the government to spell out its stand on the land Bill issue since the matter has now been referred to a parliamentary panel. They asked Ahluwalia to find out what the government's view is on the matter now.

I
am a Graduate (BMS) and I opted for Marketing major at my Graduation level in college. I spent my energy in college preparing myself to become a managerial expert. But it wasn't until my internship after my graduation that I began to develop my interest in Public relations. I was assigned a mentor who helped me understand the field better and map out my career plans. I feel the field is quite challenging but at the same time is fun as well. You get to meet new people and get to explore new things with every client you handle. The field not only helps you grow personally but also, helps your client grow in their field which is beneficial for both. Also, you get to explore various opportunities for your client to get them featured which makes you use your creativity and keeps on improving it. While doing BMS we had PR as a subject which helped me know more about the field. So, yes, my education has helped me a great deal. Training days were the best part of my life and I will never forget those days. My boss in my first ever PR organization Dipankar Zalpuri and all of my colleagues Neha Manucha, Karan Gulyani, Mehak Jaggi helped me a lot in bringing out the best in me in some or the other way but I would like to pay a special thanks to Rizwan Shaikh, who has always been by my side as a colleague, a mentor, a teacher, a friend and as a family. It is he who helped me chose the right path for my career and it is he who nurtured me from a seed to a plant which is
“PR will always make its presence felt in the market,” make its presence felt in the market. We were a bunch of young professionals working for a PR agency and we realized that the amount of hard work you do while working under someone does not get compensated accordingly. However, if it is your own organisation (business) you end up giving the same amount or even more hard work with much better results in terms of monetary value. The risk is high as it is not easy to run an agency irrespective of it being bigger or smaller. The feeling of being independent makes the risk worth taking. I am fortunate I got a chance to be the co founder of a young agency at such a young age. All credit goes to my colleagues Rizwan Shaikh and Sonya Shaikh who are also co founders of our agency. It is their vision and hard work because of which this has been possible. I am very excited about our agency and keen to contribute to the best of my competencies and mould this young agency as a firm to be sought out for in the coming years in the luxury and fashion space. With respect to a future plan, I aspire to study more in the respective field so that I can attain certain professional skills and give my best to the business and deliver more results and fight the stiff competition in the market by delivering excellent results. My advice for those who want to take up the PR profession is – If you are really good at persuading people and in selling your ideas, you should definitely choose this as your profession.

ready to become a tree now. My job profile consists of planning publicity strategies and campaigns, writing and producing presentations and press releases, dealing with enquiries from the press and stylists, organising promotional events such as press conferences, exhibitions, tours and visits, speaking publicly at interviews, press conferences and presentations, providing clients with information about new promotional opportunities and current PR campaigns progress, analysing media coverage, commissioning or undertaking relevant market research if needed, liaising with clients, managerial and journalistic staff about budgets, timescales and objectives; and if required, designing, writing and/or producing presentations, press releases, articles, leaflets, reports, lookbooks, etc. Time to learn how this field works and hard work to actually bring things into action were the only investment
that I had to make besides paying for my education and investing in starting our own PR agency. As a fresher one can earn around 12k. As a professional your salary depends on your knowledge, experience and bargaining power. Earning in this field depends on your market reputation. The number of clients that you can handle and how well you can handle them also decides how much you can earn; it all depends on how quickly you can learn things in this field. You can be a professional in 6 months and still can be immature in the field even after working for years. But since, experience, contacts and your relation with the media matters a lot in this field I would say to be a better professional it will take a minimum time of 3 to 4 years in the field. The best advantage of this field is that it will always be in demand. Every other person wants to get promoted and to do so the best way is through PR. So it will always

verybody has heard of big fat Indian weddings, a source of much celebration in India. In India no celebration is complete without dancing, singing and, most importantly, firecrackers. The dancing and singing, of course, are enjoyable. However, the firecrackers not only create noise pollution, but also create a mess. When a firecracker is burst, nobody thinks of cleaning up the mess caused after it burns out. Instead, it is commonly assumed, that with the crackers going up in flames, nothing remains. Clearly, no object can just disappear into thin air, and these scraps, like many others that are neglected, build up until they become a visible mountain of trash long after their invisible fumes merge with the surrounding atmosphere. These days we are all bombarded by messages about the Swachh Bharat campaign, which translates to Clean India in English. However, not everybody knows exactly what the movement entails, nor do they know how to get involved. For the movement to succeed, it is vital that the people of the country are directly involved with the process. A country can only take steps forward through the combined effort of these citizens. Swachh Bharat operates on three levels. The first level includes projects on the governmental level, which are funded by the 2 per cent cess in service tax that was introduced for that very purpose. These projects would include things such as the cleaning of roads, installation of garbage cans, etc. The second level consists of voluntary activities carried out by different housing societies or neighbourhood organisations. This level of Swachh Bharat includes the cleaning of India by the citizens and is spurred by the lack of cleanliness in their country.
Pic for representational purposes only
16
This level would be manifested in several ways, such as citizens gathering together and cleaning the streets and the citizens separating their trash correctly so that it can be recycled or disposed of correctly.
The third level of Swachh Bharat is the mandatory level, in which the government, in order for the progress of the Swachh Bharat project, mandates cleaning or the changing of policies.
Despite the action of the government regarding Swachh Bharat, a government only exists for its people, therefore, it is up to the people to do their duty and help this movement for a clean India. A government can make policies and also in cases, impose fines but the real groundwork has to be done by the people. That not only requires physical work but needs a change in attitude too. The issue with waste in India comes from the very roots of Indian culture, which have come to promote freedom without the sense of civic responsibility. Most Indians believe that cleaning is somebody else’s job. This is reflected in the way that people dispose trash. Many people throw trash on the street because they think they are only responsible for keeping their immediate environment clean and not their streets. In spite of the presence of dustbins, people do not care and throw trash wherever they want. Many small packets of trash not disposed of in a timely, proper manner can turn into a mountain of trash in no time. Therefore, I call upon the people of India to take responsibility for their actions and make sure that trash is disposed of correctly. Only a collective will and desire to change this will show us a path towards a cleaner, better India. It is important that each and every citizen of this country is part of this initiative, because, as it is with trash, a big impact is only caused by a multitude of smaller impacts. It is time to take responsibility for our actions and look at the big picture in terms of trash. It may take less effort to throw a small piece of trash onto the street than to wait and dispose of it correctly, but this effort is vital in the endeavor of making Swachh Bharat a reality.

Emerging opportunities for CAs in the industry Continued from pg 15 « where they trained with a large company, continued with the company to move up the ranks. ‘Boring’, ‘money-minded’ and ‘obsessed with numbers’ are few of the epithets that are often used to describe a chartered accountant. In fact, more often people associate a CA with people who help them file returns, plan taxes; auditors or with people working in accounts department of an organization. The growth in the domestic economy has lead to growth in almost every sector and the emergence of new age sectors. With the entrepreneurial boom, the ecosystem now looks at the role of Chartered Accountants from a different dimension including Chartered Accountants themselves. The opportunities have opened up in not only once considered traditional sectors like Banking, Insurance, Manufacturing but also in new age sectors like modern retail, Healthcare, Information Technology, Education, E-Commerce, Logistics includ-
ing segments like Investment Banking, Venture Capital/Private Equity. Chartered Accountants are also partnering with businesses like never before to increasingly move up the corporate ladder to occupy positions of a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). An increasing number of CA’s today are willing to take the ‘risk’ and join new age, exciting businesses which are not brands as yet; joining them to purely satisfy their urge to try something new and quench their entrepreneurial thirst by being close to how things work in an ‘entrepreneurial set up’. This category of people are willing to give a few years of their life to build and scale these businesses knowing fully well that they can get back to ‘established companies’ if things don’t work out. Venture Capital/Private Equity once considered to be the domain of management graduates from Ivy league schools is also seeing a fair share of Chartered Accountants evaluating deals, raising funds, working with entrepreneurs and being a part of company boards.
A stint with a large accounting/audit firm itself today has undergone changes with areas like Mergers & Acquisitions, International Tax, Consulting, Risk Management, Corporate Finance opening up new vistas for CA’s. Many CA’s consider entrepreneurship itself as a viable career option today. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) needs to take a large part of the credit since they have managed to retain the standards of the course fairly high, which has ensured that largely the quality of the Chartered Accountants is good and they are sought after by prospective employers. The number of people who are registering for the course has gone up significantly over the years; students and parents are able to see the opportunities that a career as a CA offers. However, with the increase in demand, the institute needs to ensure that the supply of CA’s is not a bottleneck while ensuring that it works closely with companies to ensure that the gap between academics and expectations from companies is narrowed down.

"There are two children (in the show) who are twins and they are like my grandchildren. I love being in their company," he said. Aaradhya has yet not seen the picture of her grandfather as an animated hero. "She has not seen yet... It is too early to show her," he said.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (June 17, 2015) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Tuesday (June 16, 2015) a net 33.40 points (0.42%) and closed at the 8047 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 8004 points level. It then declined and registered the day’s low at the 7952 points level at 1.56 p.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 8061 points level at 3.28 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 110 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 38 were gainers, while 12 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables and auto stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 1.22%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 736 were gainers, 692 were losers and 48 remained unchanged.

RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indica tor: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it rises). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

the 7746 points level.
Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8336 points level. The next resistance is at the 8444 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8021 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7979. Support (2) = 7911. Resistance (1) = 8089. Resistance (2) = 8130. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a small white body candle with a long lower tail. The long lower tail indicates that the sellers dominated trading and drove prices lower during the session. However by the end of the session, buyers resurfaced and pushed prices back. This indicates that there is strong buying support at lower levels. This candle also indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index has crossed above its 5 day moving average. Further, the velocity parameters which were negatively trended have now turned neutral. This is positive. But, the index continues to remain below its 15, 25 and 200 day moving averages. Further, the 15 and 25 day moving averages are declining. This is negative. As such these are mixed signals. A clearer picture will emerge in the coming few days.

Export Growth Likely To Remain Weak After registering sixth consecutive monthly declines...
By A Business Reporter
I
ndia’s exports stood at $22.35 billion in May, down 20.2% y-o-y after falling by 14.0% last month. This marks the sixth consecutive monthly decline. Cumulatively during April and May 2015-16, exports declined by 17.2% y-o-y to $44.4 billion. The decline in exports in May was broad-based. While oil exports fell by 59.1% y-o-y in May from 46.5% y-o-y in April (though average Brent crude oil prices rose to $64.1/barrel in May from $59.5/barrel in April), non-oil exports declined by 9.7%. Besides oil, exports of the other two most-shipped items – engineering goods (25.2% share) and gems and jewellery (13.4% share) declined by 8% and 13% respectively. Services exports too have started feeling the brunt of weak demand. India’s services exports fell by 4.5% y-o-y to $13.1 billion in May. With this, services exports have declined for the second consecutive month. Incidentally, the Trade deficit remains under check as imports also plunged and fell for the sixth consecutive month, by 16.5% y-o-y to $32.75 billion in May. The fall was the largest since December 2014 owing to a sudden drop in gold imports. Gold imports grew by 10.5%
Gold Imports Tick Up 10.47%
G
old imports grew 10.47% to USD 2.42 billion in May on declining prices and easing of restrictions by RBI. Imports of the precious metal stood at USD 2.19 billion in the same month of 2014.In April this year, the imports grew 78.33% to USD 3.13 billion. Any increase in gold imports impacts the current account deficit (CAD).CAD in the first half of last fiscal declined to 1.9% of GDP (USD 18 billion) from 3.1% (USD 27 billion) in the same pe-
y-o-y to $2.4 billion, much lower as compared to a 74% growth in the previous three months. Oil imports too fell in May, albeit by a lower degree (41% y-o-y) as compared to the previous months, amid a rise international crude oil prices. Cumulatively, during April and May 2015-16 imports declined by 12.2% yo-y to $65.8 billion. A fall in imports was positive for the trade deficit, which improved to $10.41 billion in May from $10.99 billion in April and $11.23 billion in May 2014. Cumulatively, trade deficit only widened marginally during April-May to $21.39 billion as compared to $21.32 billion dur-
riod of the previous year. The Reserve Bank and the government have maintained that the CAD level is comfortable, but the jump in gold imports may spark fresh worries. In November last year, RBI had scrapped the controversial 80:20 scheme. Under the programme, which was put in place in August 2013 to keep a tight leash on gold inflows, at least 20 % of imported gold had to be exported before bringing in new lots. ing the same period last fiscal. Says Crisil Research “A continuous decline in merchandise exports along with the recent softness seen in the services exports suggest weak demand conditions in our major export markets such as Eurozone, China and the OPEC. Going ahead, export growth is likely to remain weak. Import growth, on the other hand, could revive mildly as domestic demand improves. Trade deficit and subsequently the current account deficit (CAD) could therefore see some pressure. We expect the CAD to increase to 1.5% of GDP in 2015-16 from 1.3% of GDP in 2014-15”.

No Coercion By Taxmen To Recover MAT Dues, Says CBDT By A Business Reporter

n a breather for FII investors, the CBDT yesterdayday said taxmen won't resort to coercive methods to recover dues towards Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) on capital gains made by FIIs and will wait for the Supreme Court order on the issue. "Assessing Officers (AO) can not redo their order (on levying of MAT on FIIs), but if order is in appeal, then we can certainly tell our assessing officer please don't take it further, don't agitate it in further and this is exactly what we did in Shell and Vodafone tax case," Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairperson Anita Kapur told reporters in New Delhi. Shell and Vodafone case went against us and once we accepted that judgment, we told our officers please don't do future assessments and please don't further agitate these in appeals," she added. Kapur further said the merit of levying MAT on capital gains will be decided by A P Shah Committee and the Supreme Court. "I am only saying I am certain on the process (on the levy of MAT on FIIs)... Merit of the issue can also be decided by the Supreme Court," CBDT Chairperson Anita Kapur , adding "Sometimes taxpayers pay MAT and they go and file an appeal. RBI has said: "A conservative strategy would be to wait, especially for more certainty, on both the monsoon outturn as well as the effects of government responses if it turns out to be weak." Meanwhile, RBI has raised its inflation forecast to 6% by Jan 2016 - slightly higher than the 5.8% forecast in April.
India Has Fourth Largest Ultra High Net Worth Households By Yoshita Singh
I
ndia is home to the fourth largest number of Ultra-High-Net-Worth Households that have more than 100 million dollars in private wealth, according to a new report by the Boston Consulting Group's 'Global Wealth 2015: Winning the Growth Game'. The report says continued economic expansion of China and India was driving growth in wealth in the Asia- Pacific region. The US remains the country with the largest number of ultra-highnet-worth (UHNW) households at 5,201, followed by China (1,037), the UK (1,019), India (928) and Germany (679) in 2014, it said. India's UHNW households grew manifold from 2013 when the number stood at 284. Private wealth in the Asia-Pacific region expanded by a steep 29% in 2014 to reach USD 47 trillion, enabling it to overtake Europe (Eastern and Western Europe combined) to become the world's second-wealthiest region, the report said. With a projected USD 57 trillion in 2016, Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) is expected to surpass North America (a projected USD 56 trillion) as the wealthiest region in the world and will be the largest pool for client acquisition. "At such a pace, the region is expected to overtake North America as the world's richest region in 2016, with USD 57 trillion in private wealth," the report released yesterday said. The region is also projected to hold 34% of global wealth in 2019. With a projected annual growth rate of almost 10%, private wealth in Asia-Pacific will rise to an estimated USD 75 trillion in 2019. Growth in wealth in the Asia-Pacific region was driven heavily by the continued economic expansion of its two largest economies China and India, the report said. Private wealth in China and India also showed solid market gains driven mainly by investments in local equities, it said.
China's equity market rose by 38% and India's by 23%, it added. Global private financial wealth grew by nearly 12% in 2014 to reach a total of USD 164 trillion. The rise was in line with 2013, when global wealth also grew by just over 12%, the report said. Over the next five years, total private wealth globally is projected to post a compound annual growth rate of 6% to reach an estimated USD 222 trillion in 2019. The US remained the wealthiest individual country, ahead of both China and Japan, it said. At a projected annual growth of 12% over the next five years, private wealth held by the UHNW segment will grow to an estimated USD 18 trillion in 2019.Globally, the total number of millionaire households (those with more than USD 1 million in private wealth) reached 17 million in 2014, up strongly from 15 million in 2013, the report said. The increase was driven primarily by the solid market performance of existing assets, in both the new and old worlds, it said. From a regional perspective, the US still had the highest number of millionaire households in 2014 (7 million), followed by China (4 million), which showed the highest number of new millionaires (1 million). Japan was third, with 1 million millionaire households, down from previous years due to the fall of the yen versus the US dollar. According to the report, the highest density of millionaires was in Switzerland, where 135 out of every 1,000 households had private wealth greater than USD1 million, followed by Bahrain (123), Qatar (116), Singapore (107), Kuwait (99) and Hong Kong (94). As for offshore wealth originating in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan), Singapore and Hong Kong remained the top destinations. In addition, wealth originating in Singapore, Hong Kong, India, and Pakistan was also inclined to be booked farther away, such as in the UK and Switzerland (22%), it said. ( PTI /New York)

Preparations for new Kailash pilgrimage route in place: China WORLD
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2015
B
EIJING: China is pressing ahead with preparations to open the new second Kailash Manasarovar Yatra road route to Indian pilgrims on June 22 despite difficulties caused by the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal which has badly affected the border regions in Tibet. "While coping with the earthquake and despite the difficulties, relevant authorities of China are pressing ahead with the preparation work for opening the route in a well-organised way," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in an e-mail response to PTI here. The first batch of the pilgrims was expected to travel through the new land route through Nathu La in Sikkim on June 22. Several Indian and Chinese officials were expected to take part in the event. The April 25 devastating earthquake in Nepal has also caused havoc in the border regions of Tibet with heavy landslides and house collapses. Eighteen people were killed in Tibet and dozens injured in the quake. The damage caused by the earthquake has earlier created un-
certainty about this year's Kailash pilgrimage. However, China said preparations for the new route were made keeping up with the schedule. China has agreed to open the second route, which is completely accessible by road during last year's visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a request to Xi on the issue. Indian Ambassador to China Ashok Kantha had visited Tibet and travelled to Kailash Manasarovar last October to discuss the preparations with Chinese officials. About 250 people were expected to take part in batches to go to pilgrimage in batches.
India has 4th largest multi-rich households, says wealth report N
EW YORK: India is home to the fourth largest number of ultra-high-net-worth households that have more than 100 million dollars in private wealth, according to a new report topped by the US. The Boston Consulting Group's 'Global Wealth 2015: Winning the Growth Game' report said continued economic expansion of China and India was driving growth in wealth in the Asia- Pacific region. The US remains the country with the largest number of ultra-
high-net-worth (UHNW ) households at 5,201, followed by China (1,037), the UK (1,019), India (928) and Germany (679) in 2014, it said. India's UHNW households grew manifold from 2013 when the number stood at 284. The private wealth in the AsiaPacific region expanded by a steep 29 per cent in 2014 to reach USD 47 trillion, enabling it to overtake Europe (Eastern and Western Europe combined) to become the world's second-wealthiest region, the report said.
Elder abuse lowest in India among Asian countries
W
ASHINGTON: India has the lowest prevalence of elder abuse in Asian countries, according to a new global review which found that 14 per cent older adults in the country may face psychological, physical, and sexual abuse and financial exploitation compared to 36 per cent in China. The researchers said that in Asia, the highest prevalence of elder abuse was found among older adults in China (36 per cent), while the lowest was reported among
25
older adults in India (14 per cent). The study found that elder abuse is common among communitydwelling older adults and is especially prevalent among minority older adults.

Indian banker commits suicide in UAE
D
UBAI: A 30-year-old Indian banker in the UAE allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his room attached to the bank's premises, a media report said today. The worker, identified as SL, had been working in a Sharjah-based bank for several years and reportedly did not suffer from any mental illness. The deceased's colleague found the body yesterday, Khaleej Times reported. The police transferred the body to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy. They collected forensic evidence from the room. The deceased's acquaintances are being questioned by the police to ascertain the reason behind the alleged suicide, the report said.
Sikh wins right to join US army prog keeping articles of faith N
EW YORK: In a significant verdict, a Sikh-American student at a city-based university after a long struggle has been allowed by a US court to enrol in an army programme without removing his articles of faith. A federal judge on Friday ruled in favour of Iknoor Singh, a student at Long Island-based Hofstra University, to enrol in US Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programme without shaving his beard, cutting his hair or removing
his turban. The 20-year-old student, born and raised in Queens, New York, had previously been denied the right to enrol in his college's ROTC programme due to his religious articles of faith. Singh had alleged that the army's refusal to accommodate his religious exercise violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and had brought a lawsuit against Secretary of the US Army John McHugh and Commander of the ROTC programme at Hofstra University.
Microsoft’s drones to catch mosquitoes and help stop epidemics ASHINGTON: Microsoft reW searchers are developing autonomous drones that collect mosquitoes to look for early signs that potentially harmful viruses are spreading, with the goal of preventing disease outbreaks in humans. Project Premonition, launched by American tech company Microsoft, is developing a system that aims to detect infectious disease outbreaks before they become widespread. Project Premonition could eventually allow health officials to get a jump start on preventing outbreaks of a disease like dengue fever or avian flu before it occurs, whether or not it is a disease spread by mosquitoes, researchers said. It will do that by relying on what Ethan Jackson, the Microsoft researcher who is spearheading the project, calls 'nature's drones' - mosquitoes - to look for early signs that a particular illness could be on the move.

250,000 children starving in South Sudan: UN UBA: A quarter of a million children face starvation in war-torn South Jpelled Sudan, with an end to the 18-month conflict as distant as ever, the exUN aid chief warned yesterday. "Six months ago, we thought that violence and suffering had peaked and that peace was on the horizon. We were wrong," said Toby Lanzer, who was barred from the country earlier this month after warning of economic meltdown. "Political intransigence left peace ever more distant; war raged on and is leading to economic collapse." Civil war began in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings across the country that has split the poverty-stricken, landlocked country along ethnic lines. It has been characterised by ethnic massacres, rape and the use of child soldiers.

BIG WIN FOR TINY NATION

T
amuning (Guam): India suffered an embarrassing 1-2 defeat to tiny pacific island side Guam, ranked 33 places below them in the FIFA rankings, in their 2018 football World Cup qualifying group match. Sunil Chhetri managed a consolation goal in the last minute of the game after Brandon McDonald put the hosts ahead in the 38th minute and Travis Nicklaw doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute at the GFA National Training Center. This was only their second World Cup qualifying win, the result coming less than a week after their upset 1-0 verdict over Turkmenistan in Group D. Guam went ahead after 38 minutes when McDonald headed in Ryan Guy's long throw-in and Nicklaw extended the lead 24 minutes later when he received a long pass from his elder brother Shawn and fired home on the turn. Ace India striker Chhetri, who was leading the side today, got his name on the score sheet one more time for
Mumbai Cricket Association president Sharad Pawar and BJP MLA Ashish Shelar during the press conference on the eve of the MCA elections at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.
The Indian team pose for a photograph prior to their match against Guam in Tamuning on Tuesday. India lost the match 1-2. the national side, but his effort in the dying moment was not enough, as Guam moved to the top of Group D with six points from two games. While Guam recorded their second win as many games in their qualifying campaign, 141-ranked India suffered their second straight defeat, the first being the 1-2 defeat to Oman at home last week. The latest reverse puts
Chhetri becomes first Indian to score 50 international goals
TAMUNING (GUAM): Prolific striker Sunil Chhetri today became the first Indian footballer to score 50 international goals during his team's 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Guam. Chhetri's feat, though, came in a losing cause, as India suffered their second successive defeat in the preliminary joint qualification second round. "Number of goals never matter for me. I never keep track
of feats. I just play for my nation," Chhetri said after the match ended in a 1-2 defeat for the visitors. Former captain Bhaichung Bhutia stays at the second spot with 42 goals in 107 matches while IM Vijayan has 40 goals from 79 games. This meanwhile, was Chhetri's 87th match. After Guam took a 2-goal lead by scoring in each half, Chhetri reduced the margin for the visitors in added time, heading in a cross from the right.
India's chances of a thirdplaced finish in the 2018 World Cup qualifying in jeopardy, which in turn could affect the country's prospect of earning a direct entry into the 2019 Asian Cup. With Oman, who beat India 2-1 last week, not in action today and Iran playing their first group game in Turkmenistan, Guam are assured of remaining at the top of their group in the second round of Asian qualifying until the next round of games in September. Guam, a United States island territory in the Western Pacific with a population of less than 200,000, are competing in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time since 2000 when they were beaten 19-0 by Iran and 16-0 by Tajikistan. A total of 15 matches are being played throughout Asia today that serve as qualifiers for both the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. India coach Stephen Constantine did not make any changes to the side that played in the previous game, while Guam's line-up saw young Nicklaw being incorpo-
rated into the set-up in place of Ian Mariano. Turning out against a side that included a couple of players with MLS experience in the US, India skipper Chhetri had a personal milestone to savour, reaching his 50th international goal by heading in a cross from the right. Former captain Bhaichung Bhutia stays at the second spot with 42 goals in 107 matches while IM Vijayan has 40 from 79 games. This was Chhetri's 87th match. The feat, however, came for a losing cause. Even double substitutions by Constantine in the 46th minute and the other in the 65th minute, couldn't change the fortunes. The second half saw Constantine make two changes as Sehnaj Singh was replaced by Dhanpal Ganesh while Cavin Lobo was brought in place of Eugeneson. Apart from Chhetri's header, substitute Jeje Lalpakhlua's free header in the 88th minute, which went straight to rival goalkeeper Douglas Herrick, was another of India's best chance.
We lacked football intelligence: Constantine T
amuning (Guam): Indian football coach Stephen Constantine was a livid man after the team's embarrassing 1-2 defeat to lowerranked Guam in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying game here today, saying his boys lacked "football intelligence". "We lacked football intelligence in key moments of the game and that cost us," Constantine said after the match. India came into the game on a the back of a similar result last week against Oman, who though faced stiff competition form the South Asian nation. Sunil Chhetri managed a consolation goal in the last minute of the game after

Constantine, however, dismissed that jet lag was ever a factor. "We have been here for three days. This is international football and you have to deal with it. Shiv Sena-supported Patil bidding to end Pawar’s reign at MCA M
UMBAI: Backed strongly by the Shiv Sena, which has fielded its own candidates, Vijay Patil is bidding to dethrone NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and wrest control of the Mumbai Cricket Association at its polls here today. The straight contest between incumbent president Pawar and Patil, who was one of the two VPs under the former in the outgoing regime, has evoked strong response from the cricket circles with both parties wooing the 300-odd voting clubs and gymkhanas by throwing lavish dinner parties. Patil threw down the gauntlet by asking Pawar to withdraw from the contest and bless his 'Cricket First' panel at the first dinner party hosted as a prelude. Pawar responded by saying he would probably not have contested had Patil given an undertaking that international and IPL games allotted to MCA would not be hijacked to his (Patil's) D Y Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray came out in open support of Patil at a dinner party hosted by the panel last night. He lashed out at Pawar saying while cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar have retired, Pawar is still all set to bat with his pads on while his score has been zero despite a long reign at the helm of MCA. The war of words between the two rival groups has spiced up the biennial elections in which former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar is contesting for one of the two vice president's posts as part of the Pawar-Mahaddalkar ensemble. 'Cricket First' group has fielded former Test cricketers Abey Kuruvilla, Lalchand Rajput and Pravin Amre as candidates. BJP
MLA Ashish Shelar and Vengsarkar are the two contestants from the Pawar panel who are vying to become the new VPs while Kuruvilla and Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik are lined up against them as part of the 'Cricket First' group. Sena MP Rahul Shewale is contesting from the Patilheaded group for the eleven-member managing committee. Pawar headed MCA for ten years, from 2001-2011, before handing over the reins to fellow-politician Vilasrao Deshmukh whose untimely death in August 2012 enabled Ravi Savant to become the interim president before Pawar was elected unopposed as president at the last elections. Refuting Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Pawar told a media conference today that he was not batting on zero but with an unbeaten multiple hundred. "In MCA's administrative history, the performance of Sesharao Wankhede was very good as he was the first to develop this infrastructure. In the last few years the Cricket Centre which was built during my tenure is not only the headquarters of MCA but also of BCCI," Pawar said. "Secondly the indoor facilities at the BKC is the first such facility in India. We have built similar facilities in Kandivli too and have plans to extend them to Thane. I am not batting on one century but on multiple centuries" the NCP Chief said.

Dhoni and company gear up for ODIs D
HAKA: Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be back in the saddle after over a month-long break as eight players join India's squad and get battle-ready to face Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series starting Thursday. Dhoni along with Stuart Binny, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Suresh Raina, Mohit Sharma, Dhawal Kulkarni and Ambati Rayudu arrived here yesterday to face the hosts in the limited-overs matches. India, who had gained a moral victory by making Bangladesh follow-on in the rain-hit one-off Test match that ended Sunday, are looking to carry on their good showing even as some of the Test players returned home. India's team manager Biswarup Dey informed that the team gave a send-off to the players returning home. "Team India decided to go out last night. We decided to celebrate because of the good performance. Some of the Test players are leaving and so it was also the last day with all the players together," Dey was quoted as saying on 'thedailystar.Net'. The ODIs slated for June 18, 21 and 24 in Mirpur have all been assigned reserve days due to mon-

Amjyot Singh, 6 foot-9 inch forward, and 7-foot centre Amritpal Singh have signed a three-month contract with the Hyogo Impulse of the BJ Challenge Summer League. They will be the first ever Indians to play professional basketball in Japan. Both Amjyot and Amritpal have been stars of the Indian men’s national team over the past two years, leading them to the historic, first ever victory over China in 2014 during the 4th FIBA Asia Cup held in Wuhan, China. The two Indian big men will participate against Japanese hopefuls with an eye toward being picked up for one of the three professional leagues in Japan – the top league - NBL (National Basketball League), its development league – NBDL (National Basketball Development League), or the BJ League. Amritpal Singh switch games and Amritpal was discovered by a coach at the age of 19. Both picked up the game very quickly and made themselves mainstays on the Indian National Team, eventually becoming two vital pieces to former Indian National Team Head Coach Scott Flemming over the past two years. Amjyot and Amritpal had attempted to go overseas previously,
but not until their Managers – Rohit Bakshi and Himamshu Dabir – were able to team up with well-respected Internationally Certified FIBA Agent Toshi Koga of Japan, were they able to secure International Contracts. The duo’s representatives hope that this historic move will open pathways for many more Indian players to gain collegiate and professional opportunities in Japan.
Anand finishes fifth in blitz event of Norway Chess tournament S
TAVANGER (NORWAY): Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand lost to world champion Magnus Carlsen from a winning position to finish fifth in the blitz event that acts as a curtain raiser for the Norway Chess tournament which begins here. After starting off with two victories, Anand missed out on a winning opportunity against Norwegian Carlsen and finally ended fifth with 5.5 points out of a possible nine in the blitz event. Besides being a curtain raiser, the blitz event decides the pairings for the main tournament -- which will be played in classical format -- and the top half finish for Anand means a lot as he will get to play five white games. The surprise winner of the blitz event was Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France who led from the beginning and defeated Carlsen and
Fabiano Caruana of Italy en route to his 6.5 points. Former world champion Anand will now play against Caruana in the Norway Chess tournament, part of the Grand Chess tour that started here. Anand's white games are lined up against Caruana, Alexander Grischuk of Russia, Hikaru Nakamura of United States, Levon Aronian of Armenia and Carlsen, which undoubtedly is a very favourable draw. The Norway Chess tournament also signals the start of the muchawaited Grand Chess tour. With a staggering USD 305000 as prize money, the tournament is the first in a series of three which will have same prize fund and the top three stands to gain another USD 150000 once the series is completed. The other two events will be played in San Luis in United States and London later this year.

NEW DELHI: The Pakistan squad has got the Indian visa to compete in the South Asian Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships which began yesterday. Dhanraj Choudhary, secretary general at the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), told PTI that Pakistan team has confirmed its participation alongside Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives. "They (Pakistan paddlers) are on their way to Delhi from Wagah Border, they should reach by midnight. The players got the visa as all the formalities were completed in time. We look forward to their participation along with other teams. Bangladesh players are
still awaiting their visa, hopefully they will be here by tomorrow," said Choudhary. Last week saw a blame game between the sports officials of India and Pakistan after the wrestlers from across the border were denied the visa to India for the Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship that concluded here on Sunday. Pakistan wrestling body refuted its Indian counterparts' claim that it had not submitted the visa documents on time. The previous South Asian Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships took place in Islamabad, where India won a rich haul of 10 medals.

Milan sack manager Inzaghi after poor season
M
ilan: AC Milan dismissed manager Filippo Inzaghi on Tuesday after a disappointing season in which they finished 10th in Serie A and failed to qualify for Europe for the second time in a row. The 41-year-old had been in charge for one season and was the third coach to be sacked in the last 18 months by the floundering seventimes European champions following Massimiliano Allegri and Clarence Seedorf. Inzaghi, who spent 10 years at the club as a player, struggled throughout much of a campaign that brought their lowest number of wins since 2001 and his future had long been questioned. "AC Milan communicate that Filippo Inzaghi has been discharged of his responsibilities as first team coach. The club thank him for his work," the club said in a statement on their website. Serbian Sinisa Mihajlovic, who stepped down as Sampdoria coach earlier this month, is among the favourites to take the job. In what has become a familiar routine in the last few years, Milan's season was a story of crises, false dawns, injuries and new signings who have failed to settle in. Fernando Torres came and went, scoring one goal in four months, and forwards
Alessio Cerci and Mattia Destro managed four league goals between them after joining in the January transfer window. Inzaghi suffered the same process as his predecessors Allegri, dismissed in January last year, and Seedorf, who followed him at the end of last season.

CLUB STATEMENT
Both fell victim to a combination of unrealistically high expectations and a lacklustre squad, and were eventually fired. Allegri is now with Juventus, who won the Serie A and Coppa Italia double and reached the Champions League final, eliminating Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid on the way. Inzaghi, who during his playing days was famously described by then Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson as having been "born offside", was hugely popular with Milan fans, having spent most of his playing career at the club.

CHILE HELD, BOLIVIA UPSET ECUADOR IN COPA GOAL-FEST
S
ANTIAGO: Mexico snatched a pulsating 3-3 draw with Chile while Bolivia downed Ecuador in a five-goal thriller as the Copa America laid on a feast of attacking football. A dramatic day of action in Group A saw Bolivia secure their first win in the tournament in 18 years with a 3-2 victory over Ecuador in Valparaiso before an epic battle between Chile and Mexico in Santiago. Chile, 2-0 winners over Ecuador in their opening game, looked to have booked their place in the quarter-finals after two goals from Juventus star Arturo Vidal helped them into a 3-2 lead. But a 66th-minute equaliser from Vicente Vuoso, his second of the match, earned a share of the points for Mexico,
who are one of two teams from outside South America invited to take part in this year's tournament. Vuoso had given Mexico the lead after only 21 minutes, tucking away Juan Carlos Medina's cross after a sweeping counter-attack, only for Vidal to level a minute later with a thunderous header. Mexico grabbed the lead again on 29 minutes when Atletico Madrid striker Raul Jimenez headed home Adrian Aldrete's corner to make it 21. Chile again hit back rapidly however with Eduardo Vargas equalising shortly before the break. Vidal then struck a 55th-minute penalty to put Chile ahead for the first time in the match, only for Vuoso to frustrate the home side with his second. Chile had what looked like a
legitimate Alexis Sanchez goal ruled out for offside with 10 minutes to go as Mexico survived a late onslaught to claim a share of the points. Chile now top Group A on goal difference as they prepare to meet Bolivia in their final first round match on Friday. VIDAL: 'WE MUST IMPROVE Man-of-the-match Vidal said 'La Roja' would need to improve to be sure of winning the group. "There are several things we need to improve if we want to beat Bolivia, but the important thing is we improved on our performance from the first match today," Vidal said. "It's nice to be scoring goals for the team, but the most important thing is our objective to be champions," he added. Bolivia, who have
a formidable record when playing at home in the thin air of La Paz, secured their first victory on foreign soil in a competitive match in 20 years when they beat Ecuador earlier Monday. The win was also Bolivia's first in the Copa America since 1997, and means they are now firmly in contention to qualify for the second round. Bolivia assured themselves of victory in the opening 45 minutes, punishing a series of mistakes by Ecuador to race into a 3-0 lead. Veteran captain Ronald Raldes opened the scoring, taking advantage of poor marking by Ecuador to stoop low and head home a corner from Swedish-born midfielder Martin Smedberg-Dalence in the fifth minute.
Blatter to skip U-20 final in New Zealand
W
ELLINGTON: FIFA boss Sepp Blatter has cancelled plans to visit New Zealand for this weekend's Under-20 World Cup final in Auckland, world football's governing body said today. "Due to his current commitments in Zurich, the FIFA president (Blatter) will not be able to travel to New Zealand to attend the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup," a spokeswoman said. The Swiss supremo would likely have received a cool reception had he made the long
Nobel centre severs ties with scandal-hit FIFA
OSLO: The Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo announced that it will end its partnership with football's world governing body FIFA, which has been engulfed by an unprecedented corruption scandal. The Nobel centre and FIFA have been partners in the "Handshake for Peace" initiative between team captains and officials since 2012. "The board of directors asked management to end cooperation with FIFA as soon as
circumstances permit," said centre, an offshoot of the Nobel Committee which awards the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel statement did not explicitly refer to the accusations of corruption at FIFA that have delivered a body blow to the organisation's prestige. FIFA has been increasingly isolated since May, when a US investigation into the corruption allegations brought charges against 14 people.
trip, after New Zealand Football (NZF) defected from the Blatter camp and voted against him in last month's presidential election. NZF chief Andy Martin said earlier this month that he hoped Blatter stayed away as his presence would turn the tournament final into a "sideshow". Blatter, who has been in charge of FIFA since 1998, has announced he will quit after the organisation was engulfed by a series of widespread corruption allegations.
