There was hope that India’s first majestic-class aircraft carrier could’ve been made into a war museum

reaking of the IMS Vikrant (former INS R11), India’s first majestic-class aircraft carrier which played a key role in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, has not yet begun due to lack of skilled labour and because some labourers refuse to break the beautiful warship which is grounded in Wadi Bunder. The ship which brought India’s naval force

The 17-year long campaign to ‘Save IMS Vikrant’ led by Kiran Paigankar came to an end in August when the Supreme Court said that it’s powers to direct the government on this is limited and authorised the sale of the

Hospital’s security staff says it is not possible to keep an eye on every patient, and that her relatives should have been more careful

By Shwetha Kannan

27-year-old woman, Pooja Tiwari undergoing treatment for psychiatric problems at the BMC run KEM hospital in Parel, went missing on Sunday and later on Tuesday evening was found at home in Jaunpur village in Uttar Pradesh. “Her treatment had been going on at the hospital. On Sunday evening, her brother who was with her in the ward left her side to get some tea. When he returned, he found her missing. We immediately started searching for her. When we could not find her, we lodged a police complaint. While the search was still on, today (Tuesday evening) we got a call from our village in Uttar Pradesh that Pooja has come home there. We don't know how she reached Uttar Pradesh. As she is mentally ill, nothing is clear as of now,” said a relative of Pooja. While nobody from KEM hospital

was available for a comment, a security personnel who wished to remain anonymous said, “The hospital is overloaded and it can't be expected that every patient should be kept a watch on by the hospital authorities. Even the relatives of the patients have some responsibility towards their patient. In case of this missing woman who was seeking treatment in the psychiatric ward, knowing her mental state, the family should have been more careful and not left her alone.” Also, apparently, the hospital does not have CCTV cameras at all its gates. “The hospital has eight gates and not all of them have CCTV cameras. And even in the CCTV footage how can we differentiate a patient from the crowd unless it is very obvious? Families need to be more careful with their patients,” said another security guard from the hospital. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Twenty officials have been implicated for irregularities in 49 projects Vikas Sabnis across different wards in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner, Sitaram Kunte has ordered a probe against the accused officials to be conducted by deputy municipal commissioner Vasant Prabhu and the report will be submitted within 15 days. Opposition leader in the civic body Devendra Amberkar said, “For projects worth Rs.3 lakh, the tenders have to stay open for three days, but the tender process alwaysused to shut down within 10-15 minutes. This is to show that the tender has not received any response, however, later it is seen that a certain contractor would be awarded the contract.” Mayor of the city, Snehal AmViolation of code of conduct by bekar while talking to media perhim? BMC to soon go digital By Khushboo Panjabi

T

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to go digital in the next five years. After taking lessons from the Mantralaya fire of 2012, the civic authority had proposed a plan of digitalising all the documents to not only improve efficiency but also change the way in which the civic body works. The proposal for the same was passed recently in the civic standing committee for scanning and digitisation of all the civic documents which would cost around Rs 81.13 crore. For this process, two firms – M/s Data Matix Global Services and Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL) – have been appointed. They will digitise over 50 crore documents while third-party auditors will conduct security and technical checks. According to a senior official of the BMC, “When the project began, a delay occurred because of various permissions from departments. However, now the hard copy of a file is expected to pass through 20 different departments without any notification of the same.” In all, there are 64 departments in the civic administration which

deal with health, water, roads, garden, property tax etc. Departments like development plan, building proposals and estates are the ones which have the oldest records, the paper quality of which has been worsening by the day. On the other hand, the civic body also plans to get linked with the global consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for conducting the audits. A server capacity of over 50 terabytes and creating a data centre at the Worli office to run the server is also part of the civic body's plan. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Brain tumour surgery on goldfish

LOOKS like George the goldfish will get to float around its pond and munch on fish flakes for much longer. Over the past year, the 10-yearold goldfish in Melbourne, Victoria, developed a brain tumour,

affecting its ability to eat, swim and even interact with the other fish in his pond. Dr. Tristan Rich, a veterinarian at Lort Smith Animal Hospital offered the fish's owners, Lyn Orton and Pip Joyce, the option of putting the animal to sleep or paying for a lifesaving operation to remove the tumor in its head, according to the Herald Sun. The owners, who weren't ready to let go of their beloved pet, opted for the latter. Last week, the tumour was

anesthetic, according to the animal hospital's Facebook page. After the goldfish was asleep, the vet began the operation. When the surgery was completed – and the large tumour successfully removed – George was given pain relievers and antibiotics, and began swimming again soon after. While the procedure cost about Aus $200 (US$180), George's owners, who have a total of 39 goldfish in their pond, say it was worth it.

Masterpieces by V.S. Gaitonde up for sale in US

Seminal works by artists Vasudeo S. Gaitonde will be put on the block this week at a leading US auction house in New York to celebrate iconic Indian and Southeast Asian art. Bonhams, one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, will offer for sale Gaitonde's works, including an 'Untitled 1961' oil on canvas valued at $3,00,000 – $5,00,000. Another 1963 painting by the artist has been valued at $6,00,000 - $8,00,000 and will be offered for sale on September 17. The auction house said the two Gaitonde paintings were created at a "dramatic turning point" in the New York-based artist's career. Leading auction house Christie's is offering for auction an 'Untitled' oil on canvas signed and dated 'VS Gaitonde 71' valued at $7,50,000 – $9,00,000. Bonhams' Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian department, has uncovered a vast trove of neverbefore published documents and correspondence from the famously reclusive artist that will

After death of artist, paintings fetch more

Why should a famous artist's painting fetch high prices -- only after his death? One of the reasons for this is, the number of paintings available for sale becomes less. When they are alive, they are as poor as a churchmouse. They have to struggle for getting the basic essentials to stay alive. In Europe, one of the tragic story of a struggle for survival makes pathetic reading. Guy Da Maupassant was one of those whose paintings fetch millions today -- after his death. Husain's paintings sells at high price today. The number of paintings available for sale have become less and so the price has shot up. When he began his art career, Husain could not sell his paintings for Rs.400! At an exhibition at Arts Centre, quite a few paintings remained unsold.

Politicians often return from foreign 'study tours' to suggest replicating in India what they’ve seen in some first-world country. The tourism ministry’s plan to develop a version of New York City landmark Times Square in Kala Ghoda sounds exactly like the outcome of such a jaunt. The idea is to make Kala Ghoda a tourist hub with the sort of massive electronic billboards you see in Time Square, a 15-feet high Indian flag, street performances and people dressed as Indian cartoon characters with whom visitors can pose for pictures. As far as cockeyed tourism schemes go, this one ranks alongside the proposed dolphin park in the ecologically fragile district of Sindhudurg. While putting together this proposal, the ministry seems to have either forgotten or willfully overlooked the fact that Kala The idea is to make Kala Ghoda a tourist hub. Ghoda is a heritage area. n the special drive launched in June this year, 1.39 lakh new voters have been added to the voter lists in the 26 assembly constituencies coming under the Mumbai Suburban District (MSD). Speaking to media persons here yesterday, MSD district collector Shekhar Channe disclosed that in the wake of the

complaints of deletion of names from the voters' list in the May 2014 Lok Sabha elections the Election Commission of India (ECI) had dispatched by speed post Form 6 for registration to 6.13 lakh voters out of which 94,775 had received and 4.04 lakh letters were returned undelivered. Besides this the district administration had deployed 13 mobile vans in the 26 assembly constituen-

cies in which 3,315 applications were received. The MSD district collector further disclosed that the administration has activated a toll free number – 1950 – whereby voters can get information about voter registration. If the people have any complaints regarding violations of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) then they can dial toll free number 1800221952. Channe stated that the total voter

Parents of Virar school boys demand CBI probe

The parents of the students holding a press conference in the city, yesterday.

While police say that the three boys committed suicide, experts opine that murder cannot be ruled out By Santia Dudi

T

he parents of the three boys who were found dead in the Sukh river, Virar, suspect that the boys were beaten to death and a proper investigation is required in the case. They are now demanding a CBI inquiry into the case. Meet Chadwa, Kushal Dagha and Prahul Patel all 14-year-olds, were students of Vagad Gurukul International School in Virar (E) whose dead bodies were found in the river on August 27. The nature of the deaths and the primary postmortem reports point to the possibilities of death after severe injuries whereas the police investigation states that the boys committed suicide. In a press conference on Tuesday

some important aspects of the case were highlighted. The parents said that there were no complaints regarding their children and the boys also never spoke about any kind of harassment in school. On August 25, the parents were informed that the boys had run away from the school. When the parents reached the school to enquire about their children they were told by two of the school's trustees that the kids were caught copying during the exams and that may be the reason they had run away. The parents filed a missing case FIR on August 26. On August 27, the dead bodies of the three boys were found in the river which is not likely to be more than three feet deep. The Virar police arrested the Sanskrit teacher and physical training teacher of the school as they had reportedly beaten the three boys. The postmortem report states that the boys were beaten up. Injury marks were found on the bodies. Faecal matter, blood stains and

head injuries were also discovered. Also the eyeballs and the tongues were popping out. Viren Shah, president of the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association said, “The police is not doing its job. All the reports state that it is not a case of suicide. A proper and thorough investigation is required.” Dr Parag Zaveri, an expert said, “Initial reports don't state that it's a drowning case. Chances of suicide in less than three feet deep water are weak. Once the final report comes all the doubts will be cleared. But as of now the chances of murder can't be ruled out.” One of the parent claims, “Today I am an ex-parent, I have lost my kid. We had shown the primary postmortem reports to experts, doctors and lawyers and all of them have ruled out the possibilities of suicide. The police has right now booked the teachers only for abetment of suicide. Police is not doing the investigation properly that's why we are asking for a CBI inquiry.”

Cabbies want new permits all to themselves By Aroosa Ahmed

T

he taxi drivers and unions in the city are unhappy with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority’s (MMRTA) call for applications for taxi permits in the Panvel area. The State Transport Department had recently given the go-ahead for 7,800 permits to the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region and asked the local authorities to call for applications. The fear now is that there will not be enough licences to go around, especially to drivers whose licences recently got called back. A.L. Quadros, leader of the Mumbai Taximen’s Union, said, “The MMRTA is distributing permits to the whole of the MMRDA area. This should not happen. The 7,800 permits allotted by the state government should not be allowed outside the Mumbai area. The autorickshaw permits issued last year were only for Mumbai city. I have submitted a notice to the Principal Secretary, Transport Secretary, RTO offices and the Transport Commissioner regarding this. If I do not get a positive reply, then I will file a petition in

A.L. Quadros the Bombay High Court.” He further explained, “The taxi drivers in Mumbai whose permits have been cancelled or have lapsed, have been waiting a long time for new permits. The new permits allotted to the Panvel area may later be sold for large sums of money. Then what about the taxi drivers in Mumbai?” Attempts to reach the Secretary of MMRTA and the Additional Transport Commissioner were futile.

Primary medical reports reveal that the girl was raped just before she committed suicide, leading police to believe that there is a third man who raped the girl, just before she took the drastic step

T

he Vakola police has intensified its investigation into the the minor girl suicide after the primary medical report revealed that she recently had sex. According to a source at the Vakola police station, the post-mortem report is still pending, but primary report confirmed that semen was found in the victim’s private part. This indicates that someone was with her inside the shanty in the time leading up to her suicide. “Our investigation has now turned in another direction. We have already arrested two

men accused in this case and they will be in our custody till September 20. We are searching for the third suspect who was with her before she commit suicide,” said the source. Last Tuesday, a minor girl hanged herself at her Vakola residence in Santacruz. The Vakola police r implicated two men for raping her on different occasions, which led to her suicide. The girl was a student of First year BCom in a Vile Parle college. She was alone at her home when she hanged herself with her dupatta. Her mother who returned home at 9.30 pm found the door of her house locked from

QNET scam: Susan Chatterjee’s custody extended By Zuber Ansari

T

he police custody of ex-world billiard champion Michael Ferreira's former daughterin-law, who was held in the alleged QNET scam, has been extended till September 22 with investigators seeking to examine her earnings and investments that she had made using the illicit money. “Susan Chatterjee was produced before a court which extended her police custody till September 22,” said Additional Police Commissioner (EoW ) Rajvardhan Sinha. The investigators sought her extension in police custody as they wanted to get complete details of her income since she enrolled in the company and the investments she made using the ill-gotten money, another officer said adding that, "the court accordingly extended her police custody." “We suspect Chatterjee pumped her money into real estate. We will also study if she had any other sources of income,” the officer said on condition of anonymity. Chatterjee, who was arrested on Friday, was produced before a court today after her police custody ended. She was on the EoW scanner for the last few months after the role of Michael

Ferreira was disclosed in investigations. The investigators will question Chatterjee to precisely understand the functioning of the controversial Hong Kong-based multi-level marketing company and gather information related to the QNET database among others. The EoW had earlier arrested nine team leaders of QNET for allegedly duping investors by offering to sell products like magnetic disks, herbal products and holiday schemes through fraudulent practices. However, they were released on bail. QNET has also been accused of using the banned binary pyramid business model for their multilevel marketing schemes to entice investors. An FIR in the case was registered in August last year. The accused have been charged with cheating and forgery under relevant sections of the Prize, Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act 1978. Bollywood actor Boman Irani's son Danesh was also found to be associated with the firm following which police froze his bank account, blocking Rs 25 lakh. The EoW has also issued a look-out notice against QNET founder Vijay Eswaran and his three business associates.

inside. So she called her husband who broke down the door and found their daughter hanging. The suicide note contained the names of two men who had raped her and abetted her suicide. According to the letter, she was raped by her would-be brother-in-law before his wedding to a family member when she visited her nativeplace way back in 2012. She was only 14 at that time and didn’t tell her parents fearing that her sister would not get married because of the incident. The police officers said that the girl had a 17-year-old boyfriend in college who had

raped her a few days ago, promising her marriage, and then broke off. “She said that she was depressed and feared her parents reaction on hearing that she was raped by her boyfriend,” said the police. After reading the letter the Vakola police have arrested the girl’s brother-in-law and her boyfriend for raping her and abetting her suicide. The investigation officer in the case, Uttam Kadlak said, “Our investigation has taken a new turn now. We are waiting the report in writing from the hospital. It is too early to say anything about the third accused.”

n Monday, a Nigerian national was sent to civic-run Jogeshwari Trauma Hospital after he started showing symptoms of Ebola – a fever and pain in the abdomen. The 64-yearold man who had come to Mumbai on August 31 was being treated for lymphoma at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Andheri. “On Monday afternoon,

this man started experiencing pain in the abdomen and had developed fever. The hospital immediately informed us and we transferred him to our trauma centre at Jogeshwari as per the protocol set for Ebola prevention,” said BMC epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare. “He was quarantined and blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune. The report has come back negative.”

This is the second time that a traveller from Nigeria, an Ebola-affected country, has been quarantined in the city. In August, a 32-year-old man who had travelled from Nigeria to Mumbai was quarantined after he showed symptoms – running nose, body ache and body temperature – associated with the Ebola disease, but later was discharged after he tested negative for the deadly virus. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Even though the in-laws claimed it to be a case of suicide, mystery and suspicion shrouded the incident as the body was allegedly found in almost a sitting state with folded legs touching the bed. Moreover, no suicide note was recovered. Supriya’s brother, Sudhanshu Shekhar, has dismissed the suicide the-

ory alleging it to be coldblooded murder by her sister’s husband, Chandan Singh and in-laws. Supriya and Chandan got married on November 27, 2013. However, soon after the wedding, her in-laws not only started harassing her for more dowry but also made snide remarks about her skin complexion. Chandan Singh operates private coaching classes in the region, the police said. Not ruling out foul

play in the matter, Police Inspector Suresh Khedekar said, “The husband and mother-in-law of the deceased woman are under the scanner of our investigations. However, we are awaiting autopsy reports to ascertain the exact reason of death.” While a case of accidental death has been registered at the Mira Road police station in this context, none of the suspects had been detained till reports last came in.

NCP poll drive begins with public rally in Kolhapur PTI

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Comment came after the UP by-poll results, where the BJP displayed a dismal performance By Prashant Hamine

n the aftermath of the below-par performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in yesterday's by-elections to three Lok Sabha and 33 Assembly seats in nine states that included Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and others, its long standing ally – the Shiv Sena left nothing to chance, rubbing it in where it hurts the most. In a sarcastic taunt at the BJP, senior Sena MLC Ramdas Kadam remarked that “The BJP leaders need to keep their feet planted to the ground. Time has not yet slipped out of the BJP's grasp. If the BJP leaders are still riding on the Modi wave, then my best wishes to them.” Republican Party of India (Athawale faction) leader and MP Ramdas Athawale remarked that the by-poll results point towards the fact that the Assembly polls will not be an easy task. The RPIA leader urged the two warring allies to sink their differences and reminded them that the tussle between them could well mean that the power might slip out of their hands. Athawale de-

manded that both the Sena and BJP should allocate six winnable seats each from their quota to RPI. As the by-election results trickled in, Athawale rushed to Sena president Uddhav Thackeray's residence, Matoshri, in Bandra. The enthusiastic crowd of Sena supporters gathered there exuded confidence that the Sena will sweep to power in the ensuing Assembly polls with or without the support of the BJP. Athawale later while talking to newspersons remarked that the Sena president was in favour of an alliance with the BJP. In a related move, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis and leader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde met Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin The Vegetarian Society: Lec- Gadkari at his New Delhi resture series by Res B K Usha idence early in the morning. later, Fadnavis stated that the BJP is demanding redistribution of seats from the Shiv Sena. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar remarked said that come Maharashtra and Haryana polls, “We will show them our mettle, the public is with us.” Speaking to newspersons here, state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari sought to argue that the by-election results are fought on local issues and were not a general election. Besides the local issues, the political equations are different and will not have any impact on the Assembly elections in the state. Bhandari stated that the 15-year anti-incumbency of the Congress-NCP government will be one of the issues and if the Congress-NCP leaders feel that they shall come back to power again then the people will show the reality to them.

Will Shah-Modi duo learn lesson after UP debacle?

Ponder awhile… “Do you ever get the feeling that the only reason we have elections is to find out if the polls were right?” — Robert Orben

T Has Modi magic vanished? E

VIDENTLY the BJP was not interested much in the by-poll to assembly and Lok Sabha. There was no major campaign by it. It used a religious fanatic to make a Hindutva statement — thinking perhaps it would work. It did not. For instance, the Congress got 3 seats in Rajasthan while the BJP got only one. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress was wiped out. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party which was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections got 8 seats while the BJP which had got 71 seats in Lok Sabha poll, got only three. The by-poll results show that the Modi magic has vanished. People are confronted with a hard reality that the BJP also will not be able to bring down prices of essential articles. There was a strong belief before the LS poll that the BJP would immediately after assuming power, tackle the price hike issue. It has not done anything to check prices. People must be thoroughly disappointed and they displayed their anger and voted against the party whose poll campaign chairman had loudly announced at every Lok Sabha election rally, all prices of essential food articles would come down once the party took over. In assembly elections in Maharashtra, people disillusioned with the BJP, might vote the Congress back to power in the elections. At the end of next five years, it will not be a surprise if the Modi magic vanishes completely and the Congress is back in power at the Centre.

HERE are many disgruntled elements in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who must be silently rejoicing over the stunning reversals in the Uttar Pradesh assembly by-polls, results for which were announced on Tuesday. Uma Bharti is one such leader. Although a cabinet minister from UP, she was completely marginalized in these by-elections by the new Amit Shah-led dispensation in the BJP. She was neither consulted during candidate selection; nor was her help sought for the campaign. And look at the results. The BJP not only lost her Charkhari assembly seat, it was also defeated in neighbouring Hamirpur. Another is Varun Gandhi, who was dropped from the post of general secretary when Shah constituted his team. Although seething with rage inwardly, Varun kept his counsel. But his supporters seem to have worked quietly on the ground to ensure the defeat of several BJP candidates in western UP. Varun boasts of a sizeable following in this region. A third is Rajnath Singh. He is the seniormost BJP leader from UP, but he has been defanged completely, first by Modi in government and then by Shah in the party. He has already exploded once over rumours about his son. And though Modi and Shah rushed to placate him with statements expressing faith in his integrity, Rajnath remains a marginal figure in the decision-making process. The Thakur vote is a sizeable one in western UP where most of the by-polls were held. It did not come out to vote this time, leaving the field wide open for Mulayam Singh and the Samajwadi Party (SP) to make sizeable gains. One wonders whether Shah and Modi will learn the importance of accommodation and strategic compromise after the UP debacle. One suspects they won’t. Both are lone rangers and after the spectacular Lok Sabha results in UP, they are convinced of their invincibility. Like Rahul Gandhi who treats his party rank and file with complete contempt and prefers to rely on a small coterie of apolitical advisers, the Modi-Shah duo too have no time for the BJP’s established UP leadership. They gambled with Yogi Adityanath as the star campaigner for the by-polls, because he was willing to play their game. The move has blown up in their faces. Adityanath may be a powerhouse in his Gorakhpur area, but as the election results have shown, there is little traction in the rest of UP for his poisonous brand of communal politics.

Why Congress’ old guard hate Mohan Gopal?

M

OHAN Gopal has become a hate figure for the old guard of the Congress. They believe that this lawyer who spent most of his working life abroad in the World Bank and IMF is the brain behind the controversial letter written by 16 young AICC secretaries asking party seniors to shut up. Gopal is an important insider in the circle around Rahul Gandhi, although he is some two decades older. The old guard believes that he is the prime mover of the demand for a generational change in the party leadership.

HE next inclination is the love of life, and not only in human beings for even little insects escape if one tries to touch them. Their life is dear to them. What does this show? It shows that every being wishes to live, however unhappy he may be, however difficult life may seem. It’s because the soul's inclination is to live. It is said in the Gayan, 'Life lives, death dies.' Since life lives, life longs to live, and nobody wishes for one moment that death should ever take him. The great prophets, masters, saints, sages, philosophers, mystics, what was their striving? Their striving was to find some remedy to cure man of mortality. But is his mortality his conception or his condition? It is a condition when seen outwardly. In reality it is a conception. The soul keeps the

Prime Minister on the issue, Modi simply kept quiet. Although Modi has taken on the Nehru jacket as his fashion statement and even tried to appropriate the role of Chacha Nehru with an address to schoolchildren on Teacher’s Day, he is believed to harbour a visceral hatred for the country’s first PM. Remember, he didn’t acknowledge him in his Independence Day address while reeling off names of other Congress leaders who contributed to nation building. The Congress is determined to make up for the new government’s neglect and celebrate Nehru’s birth anniversary on a grand scale. In its eagerness, it has set up as many as four committees for the project. The main committee is headed by Sonia Gandhi. But there are three other committees: a programme committee, an international committee and a Sheila Dikshit committee. Many names overlap like Mukul Wasnik and Anand Sharma. And confusion persists on the mandates for each committee. It is unfortunate that the birth anniversary of a man who was one of the pillars of modern India should become the subject of so much controversy.

physical body as its garb only until its purpose is fulfilled and it wishes to leave this garb. For no one wishes always to carry his heavy coat. Even the king feels more comfortable when the crown is put away.

MATTER & SPIRIT The soul's happiness comes when it is freed from its physical burden. It can only be happy when it can be itself. As long as man thinks he is his body, so long is he mortal, being only conscious of his mortal existence. But this, intellectually understood, will not help. The soul must see itself, the soul must realize itself. How does the soul do this? In the scriptures it is said, 'Die before death.' What is this dying? This dying is playing at death. The

mystics have all through their life on earth practiced playing at death. By playing at it they were able to see what death is. Then it was not only intellectual knowledge. They actually saw that the soul stands independently of this physical garb. Buddha has called it Jnana, which means realization. The absence of it is called Ajnana, the lack of realization. Every thoughtful person, when he thinks of the day when he will have to depart from this earth where he has his friends whom he loves and his treasure, feels very sad. Not only that, but it makes him sadder still to feel that once he is gone he will be gone for ever, for life does not wish to become death. Life wants to live. But this shows ignorance and a false conception of life, a conception gained by the senses, by experience through the senses. The one who has realized life and things through the senses does not know life. Life can be very different from this. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Containing the catastrophe APROPOS 'Kashmir govt can do precious little about relief work' (ADC, September 15), as the stories of ecological balance unfolds in Kashmir, one of India's most beautiful states, it is agonising to see how urban planners have flouted vital environmental norms and undertaken rampant urbanisation. Last year we had witnessed the marooning of people in Uttarakhand. In both cases, although the degree of loss of life was colossal, but the heroics of our rescue forces must be mentioned. Now we see in Kashmir, a fourth of the marooned people have been rescued, however the fate of the bulk of them still hangs in the balance. All these calamities could have been minimised if discipline had been maintained and if we had contained our population, as the late industrialist JRD Tata used to emphasise to former PMs – Pt Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

Bihar tops industry growth

Bravo Deepika! WHILE all the major English channels debated on the topic of Deepika’s comment about her body and cleavage in response to a media clip on her, 'Times Now' did not, for obvious reasons. I admire Deepika for not lying low. In fact the dress which became the bone of contention was decent and looked good on her. Why did the media make a derogatory statement and demean Deepika? Even if celebrities are 'public figures', it does not mean the media should gun for them. If the media was so interested in cleavage, it should have gone after Western actresses. Will the same media have mustered enough courage to denigrate any popular Western actress like it did to Deepika? Bravo Deepika, though I am not a fan. — S Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

Recently the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) has announced the figures relating to the industrial growth of each state during 201213, citing Bihar as the highest with approximately 10 per cent and Tamil Nadu at the bottom of the table with 3.39 per cent while declaring 4.25 per cent as the national average. The opposition in TN says that the lack of power generation during Jayalalithaa's regime was the main reason for the closure of many industries, apart from many administrative lapses, and bold initiatives towards infrastructure, et al. If that is true, how does a state like Bihar, said to be the most backward with power far less than TN, top the table? Jayalalithaa needs to drop the obsession with freebies which of late seem to have become excessive, thus adversely affecting the industrial growth. Bihar should also be declared a developed state and should not be entitled to favours from the Centre. — T M Uday Shankar, via email

Maratha dominance SINCE its inception on May 1, 1960, the political scenario in the state has always been dominated by the Maratha lobby. The community, it seems, does not like to see any outsider gracing the coveted chair. The Congress has scrupulously followed this unwritten rule while installing its CM in the Mantralaya. The exception came in May 1995 when the first SS-BJP government selected a Brahmin to head the coalition. However, this did not go down well with the Maratha lobby in the Saffron alliance. Thus came Narayan Rane, a Maratha, to replace Manohar Joshi, a Brahmin. Rane should tender apology to Paswan: LJP

The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) on Tuesday demanded an apology from senior Congress minister Narayan Rane, for labelling LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan as 'corrupt'. "Rane, who is the Maharashtra state Congress poll campaign chief for the October 15 assembly elections published a booklet, which described Paswan as corrupt," Maharashtra LJP President Shameem Hawa told PTI. "Rane should tender an apology to Paswan for this serious and baseless allegation," he said. "In fact, Rane and Congress terming others corrupt is a contradiction in itself," the LJP leader said. "We will approach court if Rane does not apologise," he said.

PIL against ban on visit to Afzal Khan's tomb

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday admitted a petition seeking revocation of ban on visit to the tomb of Afzal Khan, the 17th century general serving the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, at the foot of Pratapgarh fort in Satara. The petition will come up for final hearing in due course. The bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka however did not lift the ban imposed by the government in 2007 as of now. Khan was slain by King Shivaji at the foot of the fort after the Bijapur army laid siege to it. Subsequently Khan's tomb came up there. Government had to ban the access to it when communal tension flared up in the area some years ago.

dequate measures have been taken to prevent suicides or possible terror attacks at Bandra-Worli Rajiv Gandhi sea link here, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Mumbai Entry Point Infrastructure Developers (MEPID) informed the Bombay High Court today. Both the organisations were responding to a PIL filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar which demanded security measures and surveillance at the sea link due to a rash of suicides. The PIL alleged that MEPID and MSRDC are not looking after the maintenance and security at the 4.8-km long bridge, which is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. An affidavit filed by MEPID, which collects the toll, said that it would be installing 80 CCTV cameras at this cable-stayed bridge within a period of two months and the work order for this purpose has already been issued. Currently, only 10 cameras are installed at the bridge, said the affidavit filed by Shaswat Singh Gadre, authorised signatory of MEPID. MEPID has deputed 30 security guards, who work in three shifts every day at the sea link. Additionally, 6 riders in three shifts (two riders per shift) are continuously monitoring the traffic movement on the bridge by patrolling round the clock, the affidavit further said. However, MEPID said it was beyond its purview and powers to increase the height of the railing on the sea link, as pleaded in the PIL. Since the major portion of the

bridge is in the middle of the sea it is impossible to provide any net or barbed wire fence which may eventually lead into eventuality of serious tragedy due to rain or wind as the barbed fencing can get uprooted and may come on the main carriage way, it said. Even X-ray machines are also beyond its purview and powers, MPEID said and denied that it had failed to perform its duties as alleged in the PIL. MPEID said it was spending around Rs 10 crore on the installation of cameras, expenses for employing security guards, maintenance of infrastructure (motorcycles and cameras) and annual maintenance charges. According to the petitioner, so far five cases of suicide by jumping from the bridge have been reported in the recent times. However, there are only six CCTV cameras whereas the whole length requires 80 CCTV cameras, the PIL said. The PIL also wanted deployment of more, better-trained guards. Currently, only six to eight guards are posted on the bridge. The barriers and railing are around 4 ft high which is not sufficient to prevent jumping off the bridge, it added. The toll collected on the Sea Link was Rs 77.85 crore in 2012-13 and Rs 53.43 crore up to January 2014. A small portion of it is required for enhancing the security, the PIL said. The PIL suggested that X-ray machines be installed at both the entry points to detect explosives. MSRDC said in an affidavit that in 2009 the then police chief had sug-

same. The supply order was also issued in November 2012. However, since Bharat Electronics could not provide scanners in the extended time limit, the purchase order was cancelled on February 25, 2014 and their bank guarantee forfeited, MSRDC said. Later, an opinion was considered that during the random checking of suspicious vehicles this type of arrangement may not be foolproof and may add to traffic snarls, hence, MSRDC said it had not taken any further action in that respect. MSRDC said it would not be possible for it to do under water surveillance and such exercise can only be done agencies looking after the security of the sea coast and defence installations. “I feel glad I am able to help so many people become or remain fit and healthy,” Alkesh R Pathak, fitness trainer

I

did my B Com and I work as a fitness trainer at the Imperial Club run by Taj. To get into this field I did my personal training certification and ACSM CPT from Golds Gym. This is an established institute and the training is thorough. I love my career, it gives me tremendous satisfaction. I feel glad I am able to help so many people become or remain fit and healthy. I love to train people and guide them to achieve their goal. The best thing I love about this profession is that while keeping others fit, I can keep fit too and earn good money. I enjoy when I help someone fight obesity, diabetes, blood pressure, etc. This way I am contributing to society too. During my collage days I was a little confused about my goal. My choice was between doing hardware and networking, software engineering and doing my BMS, but I didn’t find these fields very interesting. I had an inclination towards fitness and this gave me the idea to choose fitness as a career and become a fitness professional. Education is very important for any field, so as a fitness professional, you should be well educated in the field, after all you are dealing with someone’s health. My education helped me a lot in enhancing my knowledge about various aspects of fitness as well as communication, my behaviour, attitude, knowledge of internal and external systems of the body, etc.

Initially I trained at the GGU (Golds Gym University). I got lots of knowledge from there. They taught me the science of exercise. After that I worked with Golds Gym, Pro Fit and Mickey Mehta. Then I decided to enhance my knowledge to an advanced level and did a certification personal training course from ACSM (American College of Sports and Medicine). I learned lots of things from ACSM, about the human anatomy and other things. Life is all about learning, and one should continuously learn from an institute or from experience. Ultimately learning is the only thing which polishes and defines you. Success can be only achieved when you raise the standard bar. My job is to train clients and make them achieve their goal. Goals differ from person to person, like staying fit, building muscle, improving endurance. Sportsmen want to improve their agility, improve power, etc. Senior citizens want to improve their stability, flexibility, etc. Since I love my job, I give my best service to every client. I think it is important to love what you are doing. The earning bitl depends on your performance. However a person with good communication skills, who is well-educated in the field can earn 10-15 grand per month. Today it is a respected profession and many people are opting for this career. Becoming pro-

« PEER SPEAK

fessional all depends on how seriously you take your work and how much you learn and grasp. However it takes a minimum of two to three years to learn the ethics of the industry and to put your knowledge into practice. Your earnings depends on you. One can easily earn upwards from 30-40 grand. If you put in a good effort and are dedicated, you can even earn 50-60 grand a month. The most common question is what do you do in the profession when you grow old. I don’t think it is a drawback, really. You can grow more in experience and move ahead, become a manager or start your own gym. My plan for my future is to increase my education in this field and become a manager or general manager or an entrepreneur. My goal is to introduce different concepts in fitness and earn a great name for myself in this profession. I want to advise those who want to become fitness trainers, that this profession is very good but if you want to grow you have to become more qualified and educated. You must have the desire and capability to serve

people in fitness. Then you’re most welcome. The more higher you go, you have to face a bigger incline and pain. No pain – no gain. Fitness is a growing industry. With today’s unhealthy lifestyles and the fast food fad, attending fitness gyms has become a priority among people of all ages. The fitness industry is pickingup extremely well. People, too, are becoming more conscious and hence this is a great boost to the industry. People are taking their fitness seriously and attending gyms to become fit. The media, too, is focusing a great deal on fitness issues which gives the field great impetus. There is tremendous awareness about health and fitness issues today and there is greater knowledge and information about fitness and health. There are many fitness institutes opening up in the city and in the suburbs. Therefore there are many more opportunities for fitness professionals to get employment in these centres or work as personal trainers. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Path to Superbrain The process, known as midbrain activation, results in better communication of the right and left sides of the brain, leading to better and higher utilisation of the whole brain.

T

By Ameet Parekh

he human brain is the most complex organ of the human body. Weighing in at around 1.4 kilograms, this jelly-like mass of tissue has a staggering one hundred billion nerve cells, or neurons. With mind-boggling complexity in their connectivity, each neuron can make contact with tens of thousands of other neurons. Forming a million new connections every second, the pattern and strength of these connections is constantly changing. In these changing connections are our memories, habits and our overall personality. Very often, people are called as ‘leftbrained’ or ‘right-brained’. Left-brain dominance is often associated with a more logical and analytical thinking; while the right-brain dominance is associated with creativity and intuition. Neuroscientists confirm that the two sides of the brain work together to perform a wide variety of tasks. However, as age progresses, one tends to use one side of the brain more than the other. More often than not, it is the left brain that is used more than the right. Lateralisation, the tendency to use one side of the brain more than the other, is often the result of the focus and importance given to academics. The rightbrain, not used to its full capacity is often underdeveloped leading to incomplete utilisation of creative and intuitive abilities. A small region of the brain, called the midbrain serves as the communication centre for all the visual, auditory and motor systems information. Located above the brain stem, it is responsible for the perception of stimuli and communication of the right and left sides of the brain for information processing. The midbrain functions as the higher centre of the Autonomous Nervous System but is not a part of an individual’s conscious awareness. The midbrain links and merges the functions of each part of the brain allowing for the work of each field to appear into the consciousness. It is in essence the control room for consciousness and is equipped with highly advanced intelligence. Development of

the midbrain allows for a memory so strong that one will never forget what one has seen or heard, even once. Midbrain activation promotes the development of the whole brain contributing to an increase in overall intellectual, emotional and social development. So what leads to midbrain activation? It is brain entrainment using music embedded with vibrations that leads to activity all over the brain. This creates new basic neural pathways. Research has proven that listening to music involves many brain activities and has a significant effect on our body and mind. One of the most basic examples of this is, one often feels sad when listening to sad songs. Music has a positive effect on the hormone systems and helps the brain concentrate easily and take in more information in less time. This improves learning and information intake and enhances cognitive skills. In brain entrainment, music with fast beats speeds up the brain waves and with slow beats slows them down. The brain responds by synchronising its own electric cycles to the external rhythm. Such music and sound waves that have the ability to guide the natural brainwave pattern to vibrate at the required frequencies are used during midbrain activation. Once the new basic neural pathways are created, they form a base for the complex pathways that allow for enhanced understanding, concentration and recall ability. This prepares the brain for an increased capacity to process new learnings in life during studies, creative skills acquisition, sports, arts, music, etc. The learning is markedly superior, it's quicker, sharper and stress-free. Few of the benefits of Midbrain activation are: • Increase in the learning capacity of the brain thus bringing significant improvement in academic performance • Improved emotional stability • Holistic state of mind • Enhanced intuitive ability • Super-sensory ability • Improved concentration and creativity • Improved memory and speed reading.

A Career in Seabed Mapping

he wreck of the unsinkable Titanic took 73 years before it was finally discovered, marooned 12,000 ft under water. A series of expeditions combed the ocean bed, returning each time with more improved technology to find the largest ship driven to the depths of the Atlantic. The discovery made headlines world over in September of 1985. However, Titanic was not the last or the first of shipwrecks and we will never completely decipher the deep blue and its strange contours. However, professionals at ocean-floor mapping have propelled a career in this very direction and so can you. The vastness of the ocean and the rapidlyexhausting resources on land have made way for better technological advancement for offshore surveys and seabed mapping. Besides using oceanographers and their technology to finding shipwrecks and missing vessels, the energy industry all over the world welcomes hydrographers and off-shore surveyors for Oil and Gas exploration.

Why do we need to map the ocean? David Rodrigues, an offshore surveyor and data processor with a leading marine-service firm explains the need for ocean-floor mapping, “Off-shore survey deals with the acquisition, processing and interpretation of data of the sea floor. Several companies from different industries like telecommunications, transport and petroleum operate in the marine environment off the coast of countries around the world. Before carrying out any activity or starting an operation, these companies must know about the sea floor and what features or obstacles would possibly hinder their work. This is where our services are employed. We deliver to our clients detailed maps of the sea floor showing them the topography along with the size, location and depth of debris that may be present. Along with this, they are provided with a detailed report on the survey procedure and results.” It is a field that involves the collective efforts and expertise of qualified professionals, who visit the location at sea and gather all the necessary information needed for navigation, exploration, dredging, construction of ports, bridges, pipelines etc. “For data acquisition”, he explains, “A survey vessel is deployed carrying engineers (equipment setup and handling), geophysicsts (data interpretation and report preparation), and data processors (processing and map making).” The information

must be highly accurate and experts have to dedicate a considerably large amount of time ensuring that the collated data is reliable. Speaking about the technology used in ocean-floor mapping, David says, “Our survey methods mostly use the basic principles of <<David sonar, in which we send a Rodrigues sound pulse towards the sea floor and based on the time taken for the pulse to return we gauge the depth. The sensors are either mounted on the ship or towed behind via a cable. We also survey for other types of properties like magnetic anomalies, sub-sea layer profiles, and soil type.” Nautical charts have to be thus accurately drawn out and revised using geographical information systems, echo sounders and global positioning systems. There is no single path to a career in ocean-floor mapping and one may either decide to become an engineer and enlist for a BTech in Electrical or Electronics and then go on to pursue a degree in Geoinformatics, or become a Geophysicist by completing an M.Sc in Geology. In case of a specialization, students may also complete a Masters programme in Oceanography and join the crew as oceanographers. To name few of the major off-survey employers, Furgo Survey India, COMACOE, Geostar Surveys and Horizon Survey India are well-reputed Geomatics firms. Offshore surveyors, engineers, ecologists, data processors and oceanographers managing seafloor-mapping projects may rock back and forth between long offshore and onshore trips, as

are the requirements of field-based professions. “A lot of time is spent at sea,” says David “so people who like life at sea would certainly enjoy this.” Freshers in the field can expect to earn anywhere between Rs 2-3 lakh per annum but wait for tide; experience will reflect well in your paychecks. “The pay generally consists of a basic monthly salary,” he elucidates “along with a field allowance for every day spent offshore. The latter is the main source of income. There are opportunities to work abroad once a little experience is gained.” Apart from yearly increments, one can rise to supervisory positions in projects. In fact, people often branch out into project management or a business line management once they know enough about the field. Offshore surveyors find themselves drawn to the Oil & Gas industry, which, in fact, provides a promising career for those aspiring to be oceanographers, researchers, ecologists etc. Moreover, a thriving global environment has created ample job opportunities and security, raising the demand for professionals. Signing off, David says, “Always ensure that your working conditions are safe. There is nothing more important than your safety, so don’t feel afraid of stopping work in case of a hazardous situation. Also, carry a book or music with you in case of bad weather!” CSIR- INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PETROLEUM Administrative Officer Indian Institute of Petroleum Dehradun – 248 005 Email: coa@iip.res.in Phone : 0135 2525705

ith the new launch of degrees in the educational market, one is bound to be confused by what one really wants to pursue. However, I with all my possible knowledge write this article for those who are not able to decide beyond their boundaries. Education is the most important quality one can ever possess. The ocean of opportunities is extensive, you just need to work towards you ‘CALL’. Being a Doctor, Engineer or a Banker for a fact aren’t the only options available with a degree. The most important thought to keep in mind at this stage is 'DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO?' We don’t really know what to pursue unless we are in it. An example, I was pathetic in English till my Class V and then on an average student. However, after almost a decade and a half, I encountered my love to write about travel and food. So you really don’t know where your CALL is. The article below may help you explore more career options. And believe me it’s never too late! Home Baker: To be a home baker, YouTube is your best friend. However, with just a nominal degree and a short-term course in bakery you are sorted. The bakery industry is growing at the speed of light, why? Because each of us, no matter what age, crave for sweets. You don’t need an occasion to celebrate happiness. A known person did her graduation BBI from one of the most reknowned colleges in south Mumbai and then realised she wasn’t happy doing what she studied, hence she gave her creative side a chance to shine and she is one of the most successful bakers in Mumbai. All this can be achieved without the pressure of getting a 99.99 or 98.99 per cent.

package. If you really don’t want to get into the corporate kind of jobs and pursue your hobby as a career, this might be you ‘CALL'. You could also try adding to your options by taking a short-term course in nutrition and thus add value to your career. Countries like the USA and Australia have some prestigious courses related to fitness. You

The most well-paid interpreters are the ones who interpret Spanish and German. You could also be a freelancer, and this diploma will enhance the quality of your resume too. Blogger/Critic: Blogging is a fairly growing profession amongst young individuals. I never thought blogging and being a food critic could be a career. However, the growing job markets have given rise to a lot of opportunities, you specifically don’t need a BMM degree. All you need is good proficiency in English and a clear vision. This kind of a job can take you round the world. Reading and exploring is going to be the only two PRE-REQUISITES to reach your goal. No matter how successful your friend might get studying a Business degree eventually he will look up to your articles to decide about his vacation or where to eat. Again a very reputed job where your words are your weapons.

Pre School Teacher : As kids we all must have played games like teacher teacher, but when we entered school we admired our teachers and thought it must be so difficult to become one. That isn’t the case now, just after your graduation, you can enroll with a preschool as an intern. This job has a lot of flexibility and advantages. You could also look at options like early child development programmes to enhance your skills. This kind of a job will not stress you out and also give you an opportunity to bring Fitness Trainer: out your creative side. You might think that this is the most off-beat career. NEWS IN BRIEFS

Australian PM Tony Abbott

Abbott thanks Modi for warm hospitality

A week after his visit, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday called up his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and thanked him for the warm hospitality as the two leaders agreed to actively follow up on the decisions reached. Abbott told Modi that a warm welcome awaits him when he travels to Australia in November on a bilateral visit after the G-20 Summit. He conveyed sympathy and solidarity over the floods in Jammu & Kashmir.

Rai ‘happy’ for Nirupam’s notice, will reply legally

Unfazed by Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam's legal notice to him demanding an unconditional apology, former CAG Vinod Rai yesterday said he was rather 'happy' about it as the purpose of his book was to initiate a public debate. At the same time, Rai said that a larger issue needs to be debated on what is the recourse available to a public functionary like CAG "if somebody calls him names sitting in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)".

Semblance of normalcy in Jammu & Kashmir

A semblance of normalcy is beginning to emerge with waters receding in various places and being pumped out from several other colonies. In a major relief, the Jammu-Sringar National Highway reopened for traffic yesterday after remaining closed for 13 days, a development that will give a boost to relief efforts in the flood-ravaged Kashmir Valley. The extent of damage caused by floods in Kashmir is still unfolding as people who had left their marooned houses or were evacuated are now going back.

EW DELHI: The BJP was on Tuesday dealt a major blow in the Assembly by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, which it had swept in the Lok Sabha polls four months ago, as it lost 13 of the 23 seats held by it. Considered yet another test of popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, yesterday's reverses come on top of the party's disappointing performance in the assembly byelections in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh in the last two months. Out of the 32 Assembly seats across nine states for which counting of votes was taken up today, BJP won 12, Congress seven and Samajwadi Party eight while TDP, Trinamool Congress, AIUDF and CPI(M) bagged one each. One seat in Sikkim was won by an Independent. Counting in Antagarh in Chhattisgarh, held by BJP, will be taken up on September 20. It was Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP was on a high after a near-total sweep of the 80 Lok Sabha seats, that delivered a humiliating blow to the saffron party as it lost seven of the 10 seats held by it as well as one

belonging to its ally Apna Dal to the ruling Samajwadi Party. BSP's absence in the by-elections had made it a virtual straight fight between BJP and SP, which has bounced back after the drubbing in Lok Sabha polls. The saffron party's campaign on issues like 'Love Jihad' also apparently did not bring them any electoral gains. Equally crushing was the defeat

Interest of poor paramount: Gadkari tells AAP on e-rickshaws N

EW DELHI: Interest of the poor will be of 'paramount' importance for the government while finalising new guidelines for e-rickshaws, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday told a delegation led by AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. "Met a delegation of AAP, explained them about the efforts taken by the government in regularizing e-rickshaws," the minister tweeted. The minister added that he assured Kejriwal and the AAP delegation that "interest of the poor is

elected to the Lok Sabha. Gloating over BJP's reverses, the Congress and Samajwadi Party called it as a defeat of the communal forces. They said people had rejected the Narendra Modi Government and BJP's "politics of polarisation". The BJP, which is hoping to do well in the coming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, conceded that the bypoll results were not up to expectations and said that people had voted on local issues. The only solace for BJP on an otherwise dismal day was its entry in West Bengal Assembly. BJP candidate Shamik Bhattacharya won the Basirhat Dakshin seat in North 24 parganas district by a margin of 1,586 votes against its nearest Trinamool Congress rival and former Indian soccer captain Dipendu Biswas. The seat was earlier held by CPI(M). BJP retained the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, vacated by Prime Minister Modi, albeit with a reduced margin. Ranjanben Bhatt thumped her Congress rival Narendra Rawat by over 3.29 lakh votes. Modi had won the seat by 5.7 lakh votes. Pics: PTI

paramount for the NDA government". Gadkari said he has asked the AAP delegation to send in legally tenable comments on the new notification put up by the ministry, reports PTI. Gadkari, also gave a copy of his book 'India Aspires' to the former Delhi CM. The minister had said yesterday that a final notification will be issued after ten days to allow e-rickshaws which have been banned from plying on the roads here by the Delhi High Court over safety issues.

Low-priced air tickets have led to more people flying

Low-priced air tickets offered by various Indian airlines seem to have had an effect, with the number of passengers flown by them in August growing by over 8.3 per cent compared to July this year, official data showed yesterday. The latest figures showed the number of domestic passengers carried by the airlines grew from 52.60 lakh in July to 56.97 lakh in August.

Rising Core Imports Hint At Economy Recovery

Merchandise trade deficit narrowed in August to a 4-month low of $10.8 billion due to a15% y-o-y decline in oil imports. Excluding oil, imports in fact grew by nearly 14% in August. The low base benefitting gold imports wore off in August. Mirroring domestic economic recovery, core (non-oil non-gold) imports trended upwards for the fourth consecutive month and much more sharply this time – growing at 8.2% y-o-y in August, up from 2.8% y-o-y in July. Exports however, grew by only 2.4% y-o-y in August, a sharp slowdown from the average 10% growth witnessed in the last 3 months. With core imports expected to pick up going ahead, the growth momentum in exports needs to rise to keep the merchandise trade deficit in check

The UAE is likely to remain India's top export destination and China is forecast to emerge as the second largest export market, displacing the US By A Business Reporter

I

ndia has the potential to become the world's fifth largest exporter of goods by 2030 in value terms, says HSBC Trade Forecast. The country has the potential to become an export hub for autos and it is well-placed to further develop its textile industry, the HSBC report said. This is despite the fact that India's near-term growth prospects remain lacklustre, with the economy likely to expand by 5.3% in 2014 and 6.3% in 2015 - well below the rapid growth rate of around 8%

a year in 2001-11. "Despite struggling with a number of structural impediments to growth, prospects for medium-term growth in trade remain strong," the HSBC report said. India's Trade Confidence Index increased from 126 in the second half of 2013 to 137 in the first half of 2014. In the near term, respondents see Europe as the most promising trading destination, pushing Asia into second position. "The economic potential for India remains strong, with the growing population and rapidly expanding middle class - it presents opportunities for business. India is forecast to emerge as the world's largest middle class market, surpassing both China and US," HSBC India Managing Director and Head, Commercial Banking, Sandeep Uppal said. The UAE is likely to remain India's top export destination by

2030, and China is forecast to emerge as the second largest export market, displacing the US. Sectorwise, pharmaceuticals, transport equipment and textiles will help accelerate overall export growth. By 2021- 30, pharmaceuticals exports are likely to emerge as one of the top ten contributors to total export growth. India's pharmaceuticals sector is relatively advanced and in a position to compete globally, the report said. Major brand products in developed markets are undergoing patent expiration and Indian producers are ready to capitalise on a shift in spending towards generic alternatives, it added. "While India is already well known for IT, in the medium term we foresee strong growth in pharmaceutical exports with auto as a sector to watch out for in the longer term," Uppal added.

Cap On FII Investments In Debt To Continue We are limiting our reliance on foreign debt. It is important we keep it this way, says RBI Governor By A Business Reporter

C

autioning about reliance on foreign flows, Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan yesterday advocated for continuing with caps on overseas investments in debt. "...We are limiting our reliance on foreign debt. It is important we keep it this way and manage the economy in way that is careful and that is circumspect," he said during an address at the 55th foundation day celebrations at the Somaiya Vidyavihar. The Reserve Bank had in July raised the Foreign Institutional Investors' debt limit by USD 5 bn to USD 25 bn, after the investments started nearing the USD 20 bn threshold. According to reports, the additional headroom is almost exhausted and FIIs' debt invest-

ments in the country are already nearing the USD 25 bn, leading to expectations that there might be an increase in the cap again. Rajan said that the country has benefited from the foreign flows into the country, but advised caution, while dealing with such investments, which chase the best yields. "We have to be careful about this money because if we say, 'this is wonderful, they all like us, we follow tremendous policies and that's why we got this money', and we go and spend, we run large current account deficits based on these foreign borrowings," he said. "But this foreign borrowing cannot be taken for granted. At some point these investors will find greater usage of their money back home and they want to go out once again," he added. Rajan, however, said that through various measures we have been successful in "substantially" containing the current account deficit (CAD), which narrowed to 1.7% in FY'14 from an all time high of 4.8% in the previous fiscal.

Hiring Activity Improving; Economic Reforms Still To Be Felt On The Streets E-Commerce, Realty Lead The Trend By Dominic Rebello

But, there is a more measured approach to recruitment from Indian businesses By A Business Reporter

A

fter almost two years, the Indian job market is showing signs of improvement as more than half of the companies surveyed said they are currently on a hiring mode, according to search and selection specialist Antal International. There has been a significant upsurge in the hiring activities as 52% of companies are recruiting new staff at the

moment, while 60% are looking to do so in the near future. "Faster economic growth, investor–friendly and a more focused Government are seen as reasons behind this positive outcome," the report said. The survey further noted that not only hiring but firing rates have also increased considerably during the last three months. The percentage of Indian businesses shedding managers is 22% and is likely to stay the same in the coming quarter, the 16th Antal

Global Snapshot report said. "Compared to our last hiring survey and what is being seen, there has been an upsurge is hiring activity at the managerial levels," Antal International Network India Managing Director Joseph Devasia said. There is a more measured approach to recruitment from Indian businesses, as organisations look to develop the managerial and professional talent, the report said. Sectors like e-commerce, real estate, consumer goods have reported the highest percentage of current hiring as nearly all of those questioned reported they were currently taking on staff in these sectors. Demand in these areas is expected to increase in the next quarter. Other sectors that are faring well in terms of current hiring include healthcare, chemical, IT -- software and packaging. Retail, which is currently hiring at 48% is expected to go up to 75% in the next quarter. Chemicals sector which is hiring at 58% is expected to boost hiring at managerial level in the next three months (71%). The manufacturing sector, which is facing a tough time at the moment also showed signs of improvement with 56% companies likely to hire. Consumer led sectors like ecommerce, FMCG, durables and related industries are buoyant. Some near sectors like logistics and packaging that support ecommerce are also seeing a huge spurt in growth. This does mean, talent shortage will be the big discussion point in board rooms, he added.

“W

ith IIP undergoing a healing process, the biggest worry right now is that weak consumer confidence will impede the recovery. Monthly data suggests consumer confidence around employment has declined the most. This makes it more pertinent for the new government to initiate serious expectations management of end consumers. This needs to be done while the benefits of economic reforms are still to be felt on the streets, said Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief Economist, ZyFin Research on the August figures. ZyFin Research’s Business Cycle Indicator (BCI) has indicated that

the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) will remain on the growth path in September 2014, the official data for which would only be available in November 2014. The BCI is a lead indicator to IIP final estimates, and the August reading (corresponding to IIP trend in September) is at 8.1%, up from 7.7% in the previous month. The BCI’s advance estimate of the IIP trend has a success rate of more than 70%. The steady incline in the BCI since April 2014 signals the revival in Indian business environment. This is, however, yet to develop into a growth phase, owing to weak consumer confidence. In fact, the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index, a monthly measure of Indian con-

! " # $ # % " &'() * &'(+

sumer confidence, dipped slightly in August, reflecting a decline in the euphoria associated with the new Government. Without a pick-up in confidence, business activity would remain slow. Some of the indicators that translated into a higher BCI in August include continued rise in foreign tourist arrivals, improving external sector including foreign assets as well as the foreign exchange and, on the domestic front, rising production levels of basic elements such as copper and aluminum, and rising railway freight revenues. However, weak availability of electricity, a rising petrol import bill and dwindling domestic air traffic all have a negative bias on the overall score.

Deepika seeks to bury London ghosts with Asiad medal

By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

N

EW DELHI: The unpleasant memories of 2012 Olympics still fresh in her minds, Indian archery's blue-eyed girl Deepika Kumari is desperate to bury the ghosts of London with a medal-winning display in the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon. Touted as India's biggest medal hope in London, the then World No. 1 Deepika crashed out in the first round of the women's individual recurve event. And talk to Deepika about that day, she says the nightmare is haunting her till date, and she can't wait to make amends for that disappointment. "London was a big disappointment for me. There were high expectations from me as I went into the London Games as World No.1. I don't know what happened that day but I couldn't just perform to my level," Deepika told PTI in an interview from Gwangju, South Korea. "After London, the Asian Games is the biggest sporting event and I will definitely try my best to forget the London nightmare by win-

ning a medal in Incheon," she said. A medal in the South Korean city will not help Deepika bury her London ghosts, but will also end her individual medal jinx in the Asian Games. Deepika won a bronze medal in the women's recurve team event in 2010 Guangzhou Games, but missed out on an individual bronze by a whisker. "I have just participated in one

Asian Games in which I won a team bronze. But I will definitely try my best to win an individual medal in Incheon," the three-time World Cup silver medallist archer said. After the 2012 Olympics, Deepika herself admitted that "pressure" took a toll on her. But Deepika said she is now in a better position to deal with pressure situations. "I must admit in London I was bogged down by pressure and obviously there is pressure on me here as well. A athlete will be lying if she says they don't feel pressure ahead of any big event. There is pressure on everybody but the main part is how you deal with it so that it doesn't affect your performance," she said. "I am under pressure but I have to make sure that it is under my control. I have to make sure that the pressure factor works in a positive way for me." Deepika witnessed a slump in form and slipped to 19th in the rankings following a string of poor show this year, which meant she failed to make it to the senior squad for the Stage I and IIIWorld Cups.

Sports ministry slams IOA funding delegates for Asiad By Bharat Sharma

N

EW DELHI: Livid with the Indian Olympic Association for sponsoring the Asian Games 'junket' of sports federation officials, the Sports Ministry has said the IOA could have better spent the money in ensuring "good governance" and "transparency". On September 9, the IOA had written to 35 National Sports Federations (NSF) to nominate one delegate each for the Games beginning on Friday for the largesse costing Rs 1.25 lakh per official, covering air travel and stay for seven nights. "Why should the IOA fund officials who have no work and are going on a paid holiday?" asked a Sports Ministry official during a conversation with PTI. "They should rather use the money for sports promotion and athletes. It is pointless to spend on delegates who have no work there," the official said. Following IOA's invitation, the Cycling Federation of India had questionably recommended name of Congress MP from Rohtak,

North Korea's Unsim Ra [right] attempts to beat the tackle of Vietnam's Thi Nhu Bui during their women's first round Group C football match at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon. Supporters hold South Korean flags outside a stadium in Incheon, South Korea on Tuesday. The South Korean west city will host the 17th Asian Games which will be held from September 19 to October 4. Deepinder Hooda and his wife. The Olympic body's decision to take care of delegates comes after the ministry pruned India's Asian Games contingent from 942 athletes and officials to 679 members. The ministry is also unhappy about the IOA and NSFs not paying heed to its demand for submitting the details of expenses on officials during the July 23-Aug 3 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The ministry asked for the information following the ar-

rest of two officials in Glasgow, including the IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta. "Instead of sponsoring junkets, I think the IOA should focus on putting its financial details on its website. The public should know their source of income and whatever money is there, they should use it on athletes," said the official. "I am also very sorry to say none of the federations have bothered to furnish the details. Their basic purpose is to provide good governance and transparency," he added.

On the other hand, a Secretary General of a NSF said IOA taking delegates was routine. "I don't know what the fuss is about. IOA has been sponsoring delegates for many years. This time the number is only 35. When Suresh Kalmadi was in charge, the number used to cross 100 easily," he said. Dr Wu called on the BI to administer the sport with transparency and even invited the newly-elected team to the AIBA headquarters for a learning session.

Indian women face Korean task I

NCHEON: All but assured of a maiden quarterfinals berth in the Asian Games, a buoyant Indian women's football team will be put through a litmus test when it takes on host South Korea in its second Group A match here today. The Indians had demolished Maldives 15-0 in the opening match, scoring at will on either half virtually spending the entire 90 minutes in the opposition half. But in South Korea, the twice SAFF Champions will face a much sterner opposition and head coach Tarun Roy is well aware of that.

"I have watched them play against Thailand and they are very attacking team," Roy said. "They play a high line and their full backs overlap at every instance. They are like wingers. To negate that threat we need to play smart and mark them tightly. We will look to pounce on the counter and play deep with five defenders. I am mulling a 5-4-1," he said. The bad news is that Tuli Goon has picked up an injury and will be out for a week and Suprava Samal will be replacing the former captain in today's match.

NCHEON: With new rules set to be introduced in the upcoming Asian Games, India's vice captain P R Sreejesh feels the change in format will work in their favour in Incheon as they have hands-on experience of playing a game of four quarters, courtesy Hockey India League. To make the game more fast-paced and exciting, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) is set to transform the game from a 70minute affair that was divided into two halves, to four quarters with a total playing time of 60 minutes in the Incheon Games to be held from September 19 to October 4. And Sreejesh gave a thumbs-up to the new format. "The new format of the game is actually going to act as an added advantage for us

in the field. It will not affect us as we already have experience of playing in four quarters in the Hockey India League," Sreejesh said ahead of Indian men's opening game against Sri Lanka on September 21. "It will not only make the game much faster, but will also offer time to the players to re-energise during every quarter," India's ace goalkeeper added. Elaborating on the team's preparation for the continental extravaganza, Sreejesh said: "The practice sessions have picked up pace and the whole team is training really hard to be ready to take on every challenge that is coming our way." He was of the view that with his electric pace down the flanks and incisive runs, striker S V Sunil will pose a serious threat to India's opponents in the Games. "Standing on the other side of the field during the Commonwealth Games, I saw S V Sunil giving a

tough time to the opponents whenever he used to enter their D. It used to create a furore of tension whenever Sunil was successful in penetrating through the opponents defence," he said. "I hope he will carry on his Commonwealth Games form in the Asian Games and help us keep the opponents on the toes." Meanwhile, young Manpreet Singh, who was recently adjudged as Asia's Junior Men Player of the Year, credited skipper Sardar Singh for his transformation into a relaible midfield player. "The midfield position is a very important place as we have to keep the speed intact and ensure that we support both the defence as well as the forwards. Personally if I am successful as a midfielder today, it is because of Sardar Singh," Manpreet said. "He plays a pivotal role in the team as well as in the midfield position. He is the inspiration for Danish (Mujtaba), Dharamvir (Singh), Chinglensana (Singh) and myself."

Indian boxers cleared to fight under tricolour at Asiad

After giving provisional recognition to Boxing India, the sport's world body has now permitted Indian pugilists to take part in the Asian Games under the national tricolour. The move by International Boxing association (AIBA) also means the national anthem will be rendered during the medal ceremony when an Indian wins a gold medal at the Games, to be played from September 19 to October 4 at Incheon, South Korea. "AIBA has given permission to the Indian boxers to fight under the Indian flag at the Asian Games. When an Indian wins a gold medal, the national anthem will be rendered during the medal ceremony," said AIBA Indian representative and senior boxing official Kishen Narsi. AIBA has also asked the newly-elected BI body, headed by industrialist Sandeep Jajodia, to apply for membership of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The world body has declared that the sixmember ad-hoc body appointed by IOA to handle boxing affairs in India has ceased to exist.

Ministry sticks to USD 50 allowance for Asiad athletes

The Sports Ministry has decided against making any change to the daily allowance of the Asian Games-bound athletes, keeping it at USD 50, which it plans to pay in one go after getting the Finance Ministry's clearance. "We have sent the proposal to the Finance Ministry and the amount will remain at USD 50 per athlete, like it was for the Commonwealth Games. If the clearance from the Finance Ministry comes in a day or two, the full amount will be paid in Incheon itself," a Sports Ministry official told PTI.

Iran soccer official suspected of sex harassment

South Korean police said Tuesday that they are investigating an official from Iran's Asian Games delegation over suspicions that he sexually harassed a female volunteer at a soccer stadium near the host city of Incheon. The man, who has been banned from leaving the country, admitted touching the woman while taking a photo with her at Ansan Wa Stadium, one of the Asian Games soccer venues, but said he did not think his actions were illegal, police inspector Park Min-joo said.

UMBAI: The deal between Star India and the Mumbai Cricket Association [MCA] has drawn a blank after the former walked out of the deal, which would have earned the MCA Rs. 1.5 crores every year. The MCA has been trying to find some kind of sponsorship for years together without any luck and this year too, they came close to clinch the deal before members of the MCA objected to certain clauses in a special meeting which was called up on on Monday to discuss the fine print of the deal. The Mumbai Cricket Association incurs expenses to the tune of Rs. 1.38 crores covering eight tournaments. The deal which was to only record the tournament and not telecast it would have made the fund seeking association richer. However, in a shocker for MCA, Nitin Kukreja, President, Star India Star India sent an email to the

MCA withdrawing from sponsorship to the MCA conducted eight tournaments which were to be held at the Wankhede Stadium, their facilities at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Kandivili. They cited the withdrawal due to 'adverse publicity without reason.' Ravi Savant, vice-president, too was disgruntled at the fallout of the deal and mentioned that there were certain members within the association who objected towards certain issues as the members felt that the deal was undervalued. Moreover, the association wanted to finalise the deal before the holy month of 'Pitrupaksh'. Savant said, “We have not done any valuation towards our properties and this deal was for one year. Only after that we could have assessed what number we can put to our properties. However, there hasn't been any loss to us despite the deal falling off. This deal would have covered our expenses.”

The latter in a flash switched the ball to Deepak Lakra who in a flash dispatched the ball past UBI goalkeeper. Later Central knocked the fight out of the youngsters with three quick goals in five minutes. Narad Bahadur converted a penalty corner before captain Victo Singh and Qureshi scored the next two goals to seal Central’s third win in four games. They are placed fourth in the table

with nine points. For Union Bank this was their sixth defeat from seven games.

Defending champions, Western having won all their matches now occupy pole position with 15 points, while MSP are placed at the bottom with just one point from their draw with RCF. After Vinod Nimbore struck in the third minute for MSP, Amit Rohidas converted a penalty stroke in the eighth minute to put Western on level terms. Later, Jaykaran struck twice in quick succession to give Western a 3-1 half-time lead. In the second session, Kundalina produced two goals in as many minutes to complete their margin of victory. Later in the evening, Central Railway struck late form to hand Union Bank of India a 6-1 defeat after leading 2-1 at the end of the first half. Central looked out of sorts and were unable to assert their dominance initially. They lacked coordination and found it difficult to unsettle the rival defence to create clear scoring opportunities. SPORTS AIPUR: Muhammad Hafeez led from the front with a blazing 67 as Lahore Lions trounced Sri Lankan side Southern Express by 55 runs in their penultimate Oppo Champions League Twenty20 qualifier, keeping their main-draw hopes alive. Put into bat, Hafeez smashed a 40-ball 67 to power the Pakistan T20 champions to 164 for six in 20 overs. In reply, Express never really got going as the Lahore bowlers turned on the heat to pack the Lankans for 109 in 18 overs. Medium-pacer Aizaz Cheema (3-15) was the destroyer-in-chief as Lahore, who won their second of the three qualifying matches, find themselves competing with Mumbai Indians for a spot in the main event. Earlier, the Lahore openers provided a brisk start as the they managed 40 runs in the powerplays. Lefthanded opener Umar Siddiq though lost his wicket in the last delivery of the sixth over while trying to dab at a rising Farveez Maharoof (3-28) bouncer and was caught behind for 18. Maharoof continued the good work by sending back Ahmed Shehzad (29 off 21 balls) and Nasir Jamshed (1) in one over to stop the Lahore surge. Shehzad, who was looking dangerous till then, tried a silly-looking 'dilscoop' against Maharoof andJamshed was guilty of fishing n away-going delivery to be caught at slip. ANAJI: Brazilian legend Zico, the most high-profile coach in the upcoming Indian Soccer League, wants the 'Japan model' to be followed by India in order to improve the standard of the game in a country of 1.4 billion people. "If football needs to grow in India, one needs collective effort just like it happened in Japan," said Zico, who will be in charge of ISL franchise FC Goa. "When I first went to Japan (1991), there was no professional set-up but the biggest advantage was the intent and collective effort by the Japanese people to raise the standard of their game in the country," said Zico, who had scored 48 international goals in 71 appearances for Brazil. "In India, if you want football to grow, it will depend on Indian players and how hard people here are willing to work for the betterment of the game. I am not bothered if you

have amateurs or professionals but my job is to help with my expertise but intent is in your hands. From my end, I assure my co-operation and experience," one of the biggest names in world football in 1980's apart from Diego Maradona and Michel Platini. One of the greatest players to have never won a World Cup, Zico made it clear that he is not here to be a "mere passenger" but is eyeing to contribute for the cause of Indian football. "Asia is becoming stronger and I have not come here to be a mere passenger. I want to be part of the development of the game in India. Despite being such a huge country, it is unfortunate that India have not made a mark in the football map of the world," lamented Zico, who was also known as 'White Pele' for his dazzling skills. AIFF tying up with Brazilian club N

EW DELHI: With the Under-17 World Cup slated to take place in the country in 2017, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is tying up with a Brazilian club, Atletico Paranaense, for an exchange programme for the U17 team. Founded in 1924, Atletico Paranaense is a team from Curitiba in Parana, and has won the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A in 2001. "To give exposure to the players, AIFF is tying up with Brazilian team, for an exchange program of the U-17 team," said Kushal Das, General Secretary, AIFF. Das said a FIFA team will inspect possible venues for the tournament in November. The federation is also planning to start U-15 youth leagues to augment the talent in its academies in Goa. Addressing the question of popularising football as a profession, he said the need to build a competitive Indian team is crucial. "The national team has to do well, only then will people be interested in football but it is going to take sometime. Football is a very

competitive game. Unfortunately we didn't have a proper player development system which we are trying to change," said Das. State associations need to become agile for the game to grow at the grass root level. "State associations like Kerala and Mizoram have become active but there is need to make others active. State associations need to develop," said Das. Talking about the domestic football scenario, the AIFF is hoping that the upcoming Indian Super League would give it much-needed boost. "Problem with Indian football that we were facing was visibility and money. ISL with eight strong franchises is bringing in money as well as visibility as the franchises are owned by celebrities," said Das. However, the onus of marketing domestic football in India rests with the clubs. "The clubs need to improve their merchandising. ISL is meant to give marketing push but it is impossible for the federation to get into merchandising, it's upto the clubs," added Das.
