T
wo staff members of a leading international school in an upmarket locality of east Bangalore allegedly raped a 6-year-old student inside the school premises on Monday. The rape was committed during school hours. The incident came to light after the traumatized child reached home at around 1 pm on Monday afternoon and told her mother how an 'uncle' had befriended her, taken her out when her class was over and sexually assaulted her. The assault will have taken place when she came out of her class at around 11 am. Several parents protested outside the school accusing the management

"They are trying to hush up the case. We want security in place and won't move away from here," said one angry parent. After several hours of protests, administration authorities finally came out and addressed the agitated parents, assuring them of justice and promising better security in the school. fter the High Court (HC) directive to raise the platforms at local stations, the Western Railways seem to be struggling to complete the task. The railways has expressed its inability to complete the task within the deadline set by the HC, claiming that it will take three years after receiving funds because circumstances are beyond its control. A senior officer said, “If we have to finish the work within the deadline, then we need extra working hours. For that we need to stop railway operations which is not ideal and advisable.” Earlier this year, the plight of railway victims who lost their limbs caught the imagination of the HC.
Taking due cognisance of news reports of railway victims, including Monica More, the court suo motu turned the reports into a PIL. The HC opined, “Ignoring the safety of passengers is nothing but gross violation of fundamental rights under Article 21 (Right to Life) of the Counstitution.” The court directed both railways – Central and Western – to raise their platforms to make it safer for passengers to board the train. The Western Railways has 134 platforms which need to be raised. The cost has been estimated at Rs 46.9 crore. The Central Railways has 24 platforms which need to be raised at a cost of Rs 16 crore. Earlier, both railways cited 'fund crunch' as their reason for not taking care of the problem.

The HC has set March 31, 2015, as the deadline for the railways to raise the height of the platforms to 920 mm. Presently, there is no uniformity in the platforms across the city. One cannot easily board the train and few people have fallen into the gap and lost their limbs. A senior railway officer explained, “The suburban trains start operating from 4 am till 1 am the next day. We get to work for only 3-4 hours per day. So it is going to take a long time. If we must carry on the work urgently, then railways operations will have to be stopped which is not advisable.” General Manager of the Western Railways Hemant Kumar said, “We are planning to write to the High Court to increase the deadline for raising the height of platforms.”

ilson College's Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) Department has kick-started the festive season with its famous media fest – Polaris 2014. Polaris, every year, is organised in July, right at the beginning of the academic year. Launched in 2001, it is one of the oldest mass media fests in the city. Following innovative themes from Comics and Cartoons (2007), Retro (2009), Madness meets Genius (2012) to Color Me Quirky (2013), this year, world mythology will be the theme for Polaris – World Mythologies: Where stories begin. Mitali Adhikari, a second year BMM student from Wilson College, said, “We wanted to focus on the idea of story-telling, which is what the media is all about. What better way to understand a culture deeply than to know and appreciate its mythos, its stories, its dreams?” Sandhya Verhesege, another stu-

Zip down a 10-lane highway, cut travel time by over 30 minutes By Philip Varghese
T
he state public works department (PWD) has finally finished widening of the Sion-Panvel highway which will offer seamless travel to commuters driving down to Mumbai from Pune and Navi Mumbai as Mumbai’s infrastructural scenario has changed forever with the (SPTP) Sion-Panvel Tollways Project. The state highway, which is also known as a 'freeway' is the longest corridor of this nature sprawling over 23.09 km of length. The image of Mumbai has always been associated with traffic woes but this state highway is set to transform that perception forever, if the government is to be believed. The project is built with 10 lanes of carriageway with footpaths on either side of the road from Kalamboli Junction to BARC Junction, providing six lanes of signal-free travel and four lanes with signals on the entire 23-km stretch. This corridor saves total travel time by more than 30 minutes for a single-way journey, providing an excellent commuting and driving experience. The highway which connects Mumbai to cities such as Pune and some southern states is used by 1.6 lakh vehicles every day. According to Gopal Gupta, Communica-
Cost of the project...
At a project cost of more than Rs.1,700 crore for the 17 years of concession period, the construction work of “the expressway has been completed in record time, well before the deadline. The project has been built on state-of-the-art design without displacing any inhabitants of the neighboring areas. Over 1,000 trees have been transplanted around the project, making it as environmentally sustainable as it is expedient,” Gupta said.
The project is built with 10 carriageways with footpaths on either side of the road from Kalamboli Junction to BARC Junction, providing six lanes of signal-free travel and four lanes with signals on the entire 23 km stretch.
More beautification work in the next one year...
Map of the 23.09 km long stretch of the Sion-Panvel Tollways Project. tions Director of Sion Panvel Tollways Pvt Ltd said, “The finest project of this nature, the SPTP comes packed with superlative amenities and facilities for the common man. Flyovers are provided at five locations on the expressway of which there are three new ones at Kamothe. The other two are duplication of the existing flyovers at Taloja and CMLR. The project is equipped with 13 pedestrian underpasses and 6 foot-over bridges to augment the convenience and safety of citizens. To improve the facility of drivers, two new vehicular underpasses of 5+5 lanes with illumination have been provided at Shirvane and Vashigaon.” He further added, “In addition, 44 bus bays with shelters have been constructed along the project corridor. The three bus bays at Vashi, Belapur and Kalamboli are for tourist or interstate buses and have been built with toilet facilities. A '9+9' lane toll plaza has been constructed along the corridor for collecting user fees in an efficient and speedy manner. For the Pune-bound traffic, the toll plaza is located at Kamothe and for the Mumbai-bound
traffic it is situated at Kopragaon. The toll plaza will also provide commuters the option of monthly passes that will allow seamless and quick passage. Gupta also stressed that the grand scale of construction has been complemented perfectly with requisite geometric improvements along the project corridor. For instance, the steep grade of the Devi Saddle portion, locally known as Belapur Khind, was improved by bringing down the level of the road by about four meters. The portion was also widened to a 5+5 lane configuration from a 3+3 lane configuration. The newly-constructed Uran flyover connects this portion of the road, further reducing the stress on heavy container-laden trucks and trailers which often used to break down on the steep slope earlier. The state highway is the latest addition to the infrastructural projects of Mumbai that have been gradually metamorphosing the face of the city. Some of the others include the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, the Sahar Elevated Access Road and the Eastern Freeway. The six-lane Santacruz-Chembur Link Road
An official of the company said, “A lot of time and effort has also been devoted to the landscaping of the project including the beautification of space below the existing and newly-constructed flyovers. The entire aesthetic enhancement of the state highway has been divided into three categories: The Flyover Units, the Garden Units (pockets or patches of open spaces along the footpath on either side of the road) and the Median Plantation of trees and shrubs to create green avenues along the corridor. The landscape design involved participation of the local residents which has given it a futuristic aesthetic value. Moreover, additional roadside landscaping, median landscaping and beautification work will be carried out by the concessionaire over the next one year. The Sion-Panvel Tollways Project has come as a real boon to commuters in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune. Not only is it the longest corridor of its nature, it also offers a fast and safe journey to the common man, considerably cutting travel time. The 10 lanes of which 6 are signal free and additional facilities like vehicular bypasses, pedestrian underpasses and foot-over bridges, make the state highway one of the most significant developments in the infrastructural landscape of the Maximum City.”
sociated with preceding projects in mind. Therefore, the possibility of jams at vital points of entry and exit has been minimized. Also, the elevated parts of the SionPanvel project are divided by highways, which means that in case a vehicle breaks down, it will not result in held up traffic. The expressway has been a subject of much investment in thought and execution with several touch points along the way providing breakdown assistance and firstaid in case of any emergency. Such initiatives are a first in the country and will set a benchmark for all future road projects. The travel on this highway will be extremely easy and expeditious for commuters of Navi Mumbai, Sion and Panvel or those travelling to Pune over weekends. Further, the toll road will enable fuel cost savings equivalent to two and half times of the toll charges as it will facilitate smooth movement of the traffic, thereby minimising fuel consumption expenses of the commuters. It will also save on vehicle maintenance cost thanks to the superlative road quality,” Gupta added.
Motorists speak...
Some of the travelers who have already started using the highway share their experiences with elation. Ritika Marwhe, a media professional who works in Mumbai and travels back home to Pune every weekend said, “Although I used to love going back home on the weekends, the thought of the commute itself would tire me before I even started off. However, I used the new Sion-Panvel Toll(SCLR) consists of India's first double-decker ways Project last week and I was pleasantly flyover and is used by nearly 80,000 vehicles surprised as the travel time was cut by aleach day. Being a phenomenal project in its most an hour. Not only was the drive fast own right, the SCLR witnesses heavy traffic at and safe, it was also such a pleasurable expeak hours, so much so that it often gets perience. This highway has come as a boon chock-a-block at entry and exit points re- for people like me.” Satish Sane, an office goer, said, “My work stricting the movement of vehicles. “Similarly, thanks to the elevated nature requires me to travel daily from Sion to Panof the Sahar Access Road and the Eastern vel. Mumbai’s take on legalising passive euthanasia CITY
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2014
Malhar invites greats to the 2014 Conclave By A Staff Reporter
T
he much awaited Malhar Conclave 2014, part of the St Xavier's college fest, will bring notable names from the media and arts to address the students this year. The seminar which will be held from August 14–16 attempts to steer clear of conformist trends and gives a platform to activists. Conclave is an event which facilitates unabashed, interactive dialogue between distinguished guests and students based on the notion that everything begins with an idea. Its aim is, therefore, to act as a medium of exchange for these ideas and to trigger the will to change something within those who are present. This year’s keynote speakers at Malhar will be the renowned Dr Raghuram Rajan, the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Dr Shashi Tharoor, a former UN undersecretary general, former Minister of State and, currently, a Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram.

he Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday issued notice to all states and union territories on a plea for legalising passive euthanasia. The constitution bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha, Justice J S Khehar, Justice J Chelameswar, Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman issued the notice on a plea filed with it stating that passive euthanasia (mercy killing) needs comprehensive examination as there was no authoritative judicial pronouncement on the issue. It also appointed former solicitor general T R Andhyarujina as amicus curiae to assist it in the case relating to legalising euthanasia. The matter came up in the background of a plea filed by the NGO Common Cause which says that a person who is afflicted with a terminal disease should be relieved from agony by withdrawing any artificial medical support provided to him. However, Mumbai-based lawyers, human rights activists and medical professionals reacted sharply to the issue. The consensus was that there cannot be any easy answer to this matter, especially if it involves a loved one. Advocate Amit Karkhanis, who specialises in medico-

However, the on-duty policemen were reluctant to register an FIR, which would have meant more paperwork and increase in the number of cases in the crime records book. It was only after the intervention of local media-persons that the police relented and agreed to lodge an FIR on Thursday. Surprisingly, a senior police officer sought to explain this lapse by stating, “We had registered a missing property complaint but the process was on to record the statement of the complainant and soon an FIR will be registered under the relevant sections of the IPC.”

"This is very shocking and not acceptable at all. The staff responsible should be arrested immediately. I will speak to the state commission of NCPCR to speak to the school and take up the matter," said Tikoo. Many top schools in Bangalore have been asking parents to sign a form which says that the schools and their staff are not responsible for the safety of students. ATS TO KEEP TRACK OF MUSLIM YOUTHS VISITING ISLAMIC COUNTRIES
This comes a day after intelligence agencies reported that the four Kalyan youths who were reported missing may have joined the ISIS By Zuber Ansari
A
day after intelligence agencies claimed that the four Kalyan boys, who are now in Iraq, may have joined the terrorist organisation – Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has directed its special intelligence wings to keep a close watch on members of the Shia and Sunni community who have recently left for Islamic countries or are
on a 5 am Etihad flight on May 25. They had not informed their parents that they were going to Iraq. They went on a pilgrimage to Karbala near Baghdad. Though the Karbala is a Shia shrine, Sunnis also visit it. They had gone with a group of 40 people. On May 27, the group visited Karbala and then did some sight-seeing in the neighbouring areas. On the morning of May 31, they took a taxi to the city
Three of the four young men from Kalyan who have gone ‘missing.’ planning to do so. This was revealed by the Anti-Terrorism Cell (ATC) of one of the police stations in the city, after being ordered by the top officials from the ATS. According to ATC sources, the wing has been actively collecting information about the young boys in Muslim-dominated areas and officials are trying to locate the youths who are in Iraq or Iran. The ATC has also been taking help from Passport officers and the Passport department of the city to verify the names and addresses. On Wednesday, Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Himanshu Roy spoke about the four Muslim youths who left the country in May to supposedly join the ISIS in Iraq and Syria, but he did not confirm if they have joined any organisation there. As per the complaint registered at the police station in Kalyan, the four were identified as Arif Fayyaz Majeed, Fahad Tanvir Sheikh, Aman Naim Tandel and Shaheen Farooqi Tanki. The ATS, which has been working on the case for a month and a half, states that the four men left India
of Mosul which is to the northwest of Baghdad and on the border of Iraq and Syria. The four never returned after that. The ATS has the name, contact number and address of the Iraqi taxi driver who dropped them and will be questioning him. There was also a local guide on the trip who was showing them around. The members of group with whom they had gone said that did not notice that the four were missing even after they returned to India on June 2. On June 6, Mosul was attacked by the ISIS. These four boys from Kalyan’s Dudh Naka area have known each other for four years now. Their parents filed a missing complaint with the Kalyan police after they did not return. The controversy turned serious after Arif wrote a letter to his parents in English. The letter does not mention any organisation that they might have joined. The writer has admonished his sisters for wearing western clothes, his father for not following the tenets of Islam properly. He said that he is leaving India and voluntarily going to Iraq for the work of Allah.

The maximum number of Form 6 applications were received from Thane, Pune, Nashik, Mumbai Suburban and Nagpur districts, while the lowest applications were from Sindhudurg, Hingoli, Wardha, Parbhani and Bhandara districts.

Following an uproar over instances of large scale deletion of names from the voters lists in Mumbai, Thane and Pune during the recent Lok Sabha elections, the ECI had issued a directive to the CEO officials to ensure that all eligible voters, especially those whose names had been deleted, should be registered. The CEO staff, in collaboration with the Department of Posts, had sent 26 lakh intimation letters along with Form 6 to all such voters across the state with a request to fill it and send it back. MALAYSIA PLANE ‘SHOT DOWN’ OVER UKRAINE, 295 DEAD K
UALA LUMPUR/KIEV: All 295 people on board a Malaysia Airlines plane were feared dead on Thursday after the aircraft was reportedly shot down over war-torn eastern Ukraine near the Russian border, nearly four months after the mysterious disappearance of MH370 in the Indian Ocean. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew, reports PTI. The passenger liner came down close to the town of Shaktarsk in Ukraine's rebellion-wracked region of Donetsk after disappearing
from the radar and teams from the emergency services were trying to reach the scene, Russian media quoted an unnamed security source as saying. Malaysia Airlines confirmed on Twitter, "Malaysian Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position of the plane was over Ukrainian airspace". Malaysia's Star newspaper quoting sources said the plane was 'shot down' while cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet. Ukraine Interior Ministry said 295 people are feared dead in the crash, it said. The plane could have been brought down by a
ground-to-air missile, sources said. ITAR-Tass news agency reported that the airliner flying at the altitude of over 10,000 metres was supposed to enter the Russian air space at 17:20 Moscow standard time (13:20 UTC). "However, it fell down in 60 kms from the border; the plane's emergency location beacon went off," the agency reported quoting sources. Yesterday's crash comes four months after the Beijingbound Malaysia Airlines MH370 disappeared with 239 people including five Indians on board after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8. The plane has still not been found.
toral Participation (SVEEP) programme received encouraging response with around 8.36 lakh application forms were received in the state on one single Sunday during the summary revision drive in June. Officials of the CEO disclosed that 92.15 per cent of the population in the state are
covered in the photo electoral rolls. The ECI officials further reiterated their appeal to all those eligible voters who still not have enrolled their names to registered themselves within 10 days before the last date of filing of nomination papers for the ensuing assembly elections.
AAP moves HC, accuses Bhujbal of receiving kickbacks A
am Aadmi Party (AAP) has moved the Bombay High Court seeking registration of an FIR against PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal for allegedly misusing his official position to award contracts for rebuilding Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi and Mumbai and receiving kickbacks from the contractor. The matter came up for hearing for the first time today during which Bhujbal's counsel Prasad Dhakephalkar contended the petition was not maintainable. A bench, headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah, directed Bhujbal, a senior NCP leader and the state's former Deputy Chief Minister, to file an affidavit within two weeks
in support of his contention over maintainability of the petition. It also allowed AAP, which sought the court's direction for registration of an FIR against Bhujbal, his relatives and others and a probe into the charges levelled by it, by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), to file a rejoinder two weeks after an affidavit has been filed on behalf of the minister. The petition said AAP had to move the court since no action was allegedly taken on its representations to the state's Governor, the Chief Minister, the Commissioner of Income Tax, the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Chief Vigilance Commissioner.

I Khemka in PMO:
Relief at last? I
T is not difficult to see why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is taking so much interest in IAS officer Dr. Ashok Khemka. Most probably he will soon be in the Prime Minister's Office. Dr. Khemka is a clean, honest officer. The cancellations of order decisions on project have attracted strict response from him. The Haryana government did not like him one bit. He was the officer who cancelled the land deal of Robert Vadra, Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law and Priyanka's husband. Khemka had made his decision known. He found something wrong in the deal. He was then transferred for perhaps the 40th time. IAS officer Dr. Ashok Khemka holds a world record with regard to the number of times he was transferred. Does the BJP government want to reward him? Does it want to dig up the land deal case against Vadra again? During Lok Sabha elections, several BJP leaders referred to the Robert Vadra's land deal case. Uma Bharati had said "We will send him to jail." It is possible the BJP is quite serious about this. It appears to be set in taking up the land deal case against Vadra. The BJP leaders say Vadra has made crores through dubious deals. It is a well-known fact that one of BJP's main agenda is the fracturing of the dynasty family. It is to be noted that from day one, Congress also is attacking the BJP government at the slightest provocation. Any excuse is good enough to criticise for the Congress. It's aim evidently is to taint the image of the BJP. The BJP, however, has quite a few weapons in its armoury with which it can deliver smashing blows on the dynasty family. Vadra's land case gives it an opportunity to mount an attack and inflict damage. Maybe in implementing this exercise, it may find IAS officer Dr. Ashok Khemka quite useful.

T is intriguing. Not at any time during the electioneering public addresses did Narendra Modi ever say that Hindi will be the national language. There is no reference to it in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) election manifesto either. And yet, as Antara Dev Sen pointed out in her column in The Telegraph (June 21), as soon as the new government was sworn in, it ordered all bureaucrats and government officials to write their official correspondence in Hindi, to "take notes in Hindi and stick to Hindi on official accounts for social media like Twitter and Facebook". The home minister, Antara wrote, also announced cash prizes for those who do most of their official work in Hindi". "Hindi imperialism" was how her article was headed. The move inevitably was strongly opposed in Tamil Nadu. Wrote Antara: "Tamils like more than half of India's population do not speak Hindi. And are not about to let the dignity of Tamil — one of the finest classical languages alive today, a language with a 2,000-year-old cultural tradition be undermined by a Johnny-cum-lately from north India just because a huge number of north Indians speak it".
National vs Regional Added Antara: "We need to let our politicians know that India does not have a single 'national language'. This 'national' versus 'regional' divide is completely fake. India has 22 scheduled languages, among which Hindi happens to be also the official language for government work, along with English. Modi should perhaps brief his colleagues on this". And she added: "India has always been the land of diversity... You do not need to be the same, you just need to be together. We don't need majoritarian muscle-flexing to be united, we need to be smart and sensitive". The politics of language must end, argued The Asian Age (June 21). The paper said that the Hindi issue has "scalded the country". It is, said the paper, "a crude way to ignite Hindi chauvinism possibly with the aim of consolidating political support in the Hindi-speaking parts of the country". It said: "If the issue of allowing diversities full play without letting them get out of hand... is not accorded the first importance, much of our nation-building effort, a project traceable to the broad set of ideologies handed down to us by our founding fathers

Continuing, it said: "The emerging dominance of the language may have a great deal to do with the non-westernised social background of many BJP MPs and ministers, most of them hailing from India's Hindi-speaking heartland". Tracing the history of the language controversy, the paper said any move "to hege-

Significance of the sound ‘Hu’ T
HE sound Hu is the beginning and the end of all sounds, be they from man, bird, beast, or thing. A careful study will prove this fact, which can be realized by listening to the sound of the steam engine or of a mill, while the echo of bells or gongs gives a typical illustration of the sound Hu. The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known him as Hu, the natural name, not man-made, the only name of the Nameless, which all nature constantly proclaims. The sound Hu is most sacred; the mystics call ism-e Azam, the name of the Most High, for it is the origin and end of every sound as well as the background of each word. The word Hu is the spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden within them all, as the spirit in the body. It does not belong to any language, but no language can help belonging to it. This alone is the true name of God, a name that no people and no religion can claim as their own. This word is not only
troversy may not subside that easily. Many see the directive as an attempt to impose Hindi as the ruling party has long been a proponent of the language. It is best for the government to distinguish the agenda of promoting Hindi and the imperatives of communicating with people all over India. The Modi government is well within its rights to pursue the former but it must realise that the latter demands a measure of sensitivity and reconciling with English as a link language. The NDA government will do national integration a great service if it helps bury the old chauvinistic and widely circulated chestnut that Hindi is India's national language. India does not have a declared national language, a point clearly stated by the Gujarat High Court in a 2010 ruling. Avoiding chauvinism is consistent with the spirit of 'cooperative federalism' and the BJP's ambition of becoming a truly pan-Indian political party".

Vaidik-Hafiz meet: Just like a movie THE Congress is on its toes in the Parliament over the meeting of journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik and the master-mind behind 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Hafiz Saeed. But people fail to understand why the Congress was mute and extremely eager for fruitless peace and trade talks with Pakistan during its past ten years of a coward regime when numerous terror attacks were sponsored by Pakistan? What concrete step was taken by this patriot ‘Indian National’ Congress to crush the ISI trained and Pakistan sponsored anti-India terrorism? VED Pratap Vaidik's Hafiz Saeed (mis)adventure seems a perfect Bollywood blockbuster script where the hero just by chance enters the hostile neighborhood and meets the most-wanted villain; but instead of some 'dhishumdhishum' and bringing him to book, preaches him to give up arms and come on the right path. IT is observed that whenever a woman is arrested by the authorities for allegedly committing a crime, the entire media and women’s organisations rush to her rescue without verifying the facts. A case in point is the recent detention of two young women by the police in Mumbai. When the criticism mounted against their “unlawful” arrests, the police produced the documentary proof of one of the two women having a criminal record. She was earlier apprehended in a pick-pocketing case by the railway police. It is now for the press and the women’s rights groups to declare that they had wrongly charged the police of having acted in haste.

Potholes or pots of gold? THIS refers to your edit-piece, 'Just a couple of showers, potholes all over the city' (ADC, Jul 16). As you have rightly pointed out and also by several others ad nauseum, these huge holes on the roads appear because of substandard materials used while laying the roads. The temperature at which the mix is poured on the roads also has a bearing. The monsoon rain is unique to our country and perhaps the mechanical impact of the rain when they are heavy does seem to have a hand in producing these holes. Following the techniques used in Japan or USA have not helped. Crime by juveniles MANEKA Gandhi has very rightly come forward with a proposal to ‘treat juvenile rapists as adult criminals and that they be treated under the IPC and given harsh punishments’. She is very right and this must find all-round supOF port. Considering the LETTER THE DAY brutalities and the crime involved in the Delhi-Nirbhaya and the Mumbai mill rape cases, and those carried out by none other than the juvenile rapists, I strongly feel that no “under-aged/minor” criminal should be treated as a juvenile and let off easily –with just a

Inconsistent reporting WITH the south-west monsoon yet to intensify with full force over the catchment areas, the depleting lake levels in the six reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai are causing concern. However, what adds to the confusion in the minds of the commoner are the conflicting reports about the daily rainfall figures published in the newspapers. Whereas one section of the print media is seen painting a rosy picture, the other write-up contains contrary reports. Why are the media people not quoting the statistics as per the press hand-out issued by the MCGM? Painting by Sanjay D. Shah. There is something about the animals he paints. A hint of a shy smile; he puts round its neck and the whole while animal with just a sharply contrasting red spot produces a gentle, beautiful creaure. It is clear the first
stress in aesthetics and aesthetics is really more than half of the battle in a painting. The exhibition began last Sunday. It will go on at the gallery till July 20. Contact: 02226425873.

sta Guru, an auction house set up six years ago by Vikram Sethi, will hold its 11th art show consisting of 96 lots. Some of the top Indian artists whose paintings were auctioned were M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, Ram Kumar, Anjolie Menon and Shakthi Burman. Their paintings fetched expected high prices. An unnecessary strategy was employed: The price of the masterpieces started at Rs. 20,000. Vikram Sethi: "The art market has seen an exponential increase over the past two decades. The contributory factor being the rapid economic growth along with an increasing number of VHNI's and HNI's taking interest in cultural enrichment, has a need for acquiring art which has shown tremendous growth and potential of the market. Currently the market is valued at Rs. 1000-1400 crore, like any other industry, the art market is not immune to its macro environment and so it did see a dip in its performance during 20082009 economic meltdown.
Painting at the Asta Guru auction. However this was temporary and it is slowly and steadily picking up again. As this is the internet era, all over the world to Indian market place to bid for works at their convenience. We started the 'No Reserve' auction to expand over horizons and target various segments of society. There is a perception in he Indian market that only the sophisticated rich purchase art works.
Successful 20 years at Pradarshak gallery G
allery Pradarshak has been showing good art works by artists from all over the country for the last 20 years. It is one of those galleries where the owner — Savitha Hira — has carried on because of a determination to bring art to the people. We see sustained enthusiasm in this regard. What she wants to get is not monetary gains, but a satisfaction which comes from encouraging, spreading creativity. While she has presented quite a few well-known artists, she has given space to young, promising artists for displaying their works. Over 1000-1500 artists must have benefited from her enterprise. On completing 20 years recently, she celebrated: A big show was arranged and handpicked artists, sculptors, photographers, print makers
A painting at the Pradarshak. showed their works. The exhibition had some high-calibre paintings and sculpture. Present at the celebration were well known artists, architecture, art lovers and others. The title of the exhibition was 'The first shower' by friends of Pradarshak. Contact: Savitha Hira 0222646681.

Art on the wall “This picture conveys various messages; all concerning momos! This piece of art adorns the door of Kalpana, a tiny bakery on Chapel Road, Bandra (w). I took this picture because I found it funny that someone put out warnings against momos!” — Nathanial D Costa, 27-years-old
“I came across this one when I was recceing for a shoot at Chapel Road. Once I saw the funky quote and design, I couldn’t resist clicking a picture. I dedicate this picture to my assistant, Sarah.” — Jaina Kumar, 25-years-old
“This one, located at an archway of JJ School of Art, appealed to me because it is just so cute. The use of the archway is brilliant and it tells a simple story, of a cat trying to squeeze into a space that is clearly too small for him. The artist’s creativity is what stands out here.” — Karna Tanna, 26-years-old continued on pg 14 «

Mumbai may not be very well-known for it, but there are several stretches in the city where you’ll find walls covered in graffiti – and no, we don’t mean the paan stains or the omnipresent ‘Stick no Bill.’ We are talking actual art, full of colours and symbolism. The 48hrs Team asked a few photographers to share some of the beautiful, emotive wall art in the city that caught their eye

“I took this picture at Waroda Road. This is a piece by graffiti artist Minzo. Its on a wall that sports graffiti from various other artists as well. This one just happened to catch my eye!” — Nathanial D Costa, 27-years-old “These pictures were taken in Matunga, where there is a stretch of walls, all decked up with in graffiti. I took the pictures while filming a documentary on a graffiti artist. The entire stretch is incredible. It looks amazing, with a range of colours, but as you start to interpret the details, you are struck with wonder. These walls don’t just look good, they are also filled with layers of meanings and reflections. These reflections are about society, and the city of Mumbai. There are some walls that do comment on society, these are direct insights into the artist’s mind, the artist’s mental conflicts or perspective towards a situation. They are neat, highly imaginative, and almost mystical in appearance. Their details are immensely thought-provoking.” — Poulomi Saha, 23-years-old
“I think this one is a landmark graffiti! While it is a tribute to old Bollywood films, what I love most about it is the brilliant use of colours.” — Jaina Kumar, 25-years-old
“I love photography and I always click a picture when I come across something beautiful. I found this on a wall between two TV studios in Malad. I loved the quality and the funky nature of this graffiti, so I just had to take a picture.” — Kubra Shafi, 21-years-old
Going behind the scenes
Okay, we aren’t actually taking you to the scene of graffiti being painted on the wall, but we did do the next best thing — talk to a graffiti artist. Zake is the writer name of a popular graffiti artist who is a part of the crew, DIS (Doing Insane S**t). He also has a Facebook page — www.facebook.com/zakegraffiti — with over 1,000 likes. One of the first things we asked him was the reason he likes drawing and painting graffiti. He told us, “I come from an art background and am actually
studying art right now, which is the reason that I am drawn to graffiti. Even though this is an expensive hobby, the feeling of seeing your name up everywhere is great.” Want to find Zake’s graffiti? According to him, some of the best spots in the city for graffiti include Raey Road and the Palm Beach Road. Before he signs off, he gives us an insight into how graffiti usually takes shape. He explains, “A graffiti piece take a lot of practise to complete — the location is judged on the basis of visibility and the nature and
condition of the wall (very important for our artwork to stay in place for longer). The design differs from person to person so it’s difficult to explain exactly how its done. But it usually starts with a few sketches of the letters of your name, which are later filled in with colours and effects and then finished with an outline. Sometimes, a short message, if required, can also be added and this can be something personal. The process is usually unpredictable because its fast, and no one follows any rules while painting. We just go with the flow.” >> Graffiti by Zake on the Naigaon railway bridge and on a wall in Virar (left)

“I’m a bIg adrenalIne junkIe”
Tell us about your character from Amit Sahni Ki List. I play a quirky, 28-year-old investment banker, who is looking for the girl of his dreams. He is so driven to find her that he pens down all the qualities he wants in a girl. In pursuit of this perfect girl, you will see him with different girls all the time. He’s like a serial dater. It was a fun character to play. Tell us about your experience while shooting for this film? It was a lot of fun, since I got to do several things that I hadn’t done before. From jumping off Tiger Point in Lonavala (for a scene) to sky diving, I’m a big adrenaline junkie and this is the kind of stuff I have wanted to do. I am always on the lookout for a new, unique experience. So, it was fun. Everyone
on the sets was like-minded. We had a great time working together. You also do stage shows. How do you manage to find the time to do both? Honestly speaking, 90% of my time goes in to making films. But, I am planning to change that. While signing the contract for all my upcoming films, I am going to put a clause that says I won’t work post 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Hopefully that should take care of it.

umbai Foodie, a Mumbai-based food community is all set to collaborate with The Global Foodie in order to create an interesting experience for its food community this weekend. They’re coming together to create a pop-up restaurant called Taste of London at The Pint Room. As the name suggests, you can treat yourself to an array of scrumptious British-style pub food such as Beer Battered Fish and Chips, Chicken and Curry Pies, Cheese Toasties and Fish Popcorn, along with desserts such as Stout Chocolate Cake, all accompanied by the perfect beer. Ronak Rajani, the founder of Mumbai Foodie, tells us, “I think people really love the fact that there is something different happening in the food scene. Our pop-up restaurant offers a variety of food, no entry fee and a British pub like atmosphere, which helps turns a drab monsoon weekend into a culinary experience. Mumbai Foodie uses the idea of a pop-up restaurant as a way to offer gourmet dining at reduced prices, so that everyone can enjoy it.”
The menu is curated by chef Urvika Kanoi, who has a diploma in French cuisine, from Le Cordon Bleu. She has previously worked at London’s Peyton & Byrne, the Hyatt Regency and The Park Hotel in Kolkata. Urvika says, “The typical gastronomical experience has had a global revolution, with the growth of pop-ups and small restaurants sampling cuisines and fusing them with each other. New, young chefs are bringing unique concepts to the food scene and people have become more experimental. Pop-ups allow chefs to create a dynamic concept and be more adventurous. I have been lucky to have been trained in French cuisine, have experience with British food and am from Indian background. I can fuse all these tastes together to create a unique concept.” So, if you are looking for a different culinary experience, visit this unique pop-up restaurant. Subtle embellishments
If understated describes your style best, but you don’t want to compromise on the latest fashion trends, head to AM:PM for pieces that score high on both style and comfort, says Shirley Mistry
A
venture by designer duo Ankur and Priyanka Modi, AM:PM embodies a sense of design that doesn’t depend on an overload of colours or shimmer to stand out. Walk into their store, that is tucked away in a corner, opposite Foodhall in Palladium Mall, and you will immediately notice that barring minimal accents in black and grey, the stark white store serves as the perfect canvas to the clothes on offer. Without assaulting your eyes with an overdose of sparkle, embroidery or garish prints and mismatched colours, each piece at the store manages to hold your attention. Arranged by colour (a soothing sight to fans of colour-coded merchandise), the current collection features hues of green, lime, coral, vermilion, red, orange, white, black, grey, pink, periwinkle blue and teal. Most of the garments feature subtle detailing such as painted motifs, selfembroidery, lace appliqués, cut-outs on the neck and hemline and the basic, yet classic, pin tucks. Most pieces have a straight cut, with a few garments sporting a flowy fit. Ankur and Priyanka also seem to understand that when it comes to embellishments, a little goes a long way, making the garments available at the store extremely wearable. The overall theme running through the store is contemporary and understated. All the kurtas, tunics, palazzos and dresses that they have on display are made with natural woven fabrics, so you
can expect plenty of cotton, linen and silk featured in their merchandise. Despite the minimalistic look, each garment is classy, elegant and comfortable, unlike several designer clothes that are avantgarde and runway friendly, but uncomfortable to wear. The tunics and kurtas are priced at `8,500, the dresses at `12,000, on an average, and a complete kurta set would set you back around `15,000 — which is a reasonable price to pay for garments with a designer tag. Perfect for special occasions, especially when you have to attend a wedding where you don’t want to look too showy, or simply for occasions where you want to dress to look majestic, without looking dated, a visit to AM:PM will most certainly be worth your time.

>> The mannequin head wall at Get Shaded caught our attention (top). With their staggering range of sunglasses, you are sure to find something that suits your budget and style (below)
uxury and opulence are words that you don’t usually associate with eyewear. However, while Get Shaded is a tiny store, it lives up to these terms and more, impressing at the very first glance. The store, located in Juhu, welcomes you with a window display of sunglasses hanging from golden chains. This gives the luxury store a slightly young, casual vibe, so even though the store stocks high-end brands (think Jimmy Choo, Tom Ford), you’re not intimidated by the store. Step into the store, and their décor throws up another pleasant surprise. Devoid of the run-of-the-mill stark white walls and hushed whispers, the classy black and gold décor is accompanied by a warm, down-to-earth vibe. Although the idea of crystal chandeliers along with gold bordered mirrors and black cushioned walls would usually make us wince, Get Shaded manages to pull it off, right down to the diamond necklace display, prominently flanked by diamond studded frames, at the centre of the store. Their mannequin head wall deserves a special mention — it features several mannequin heads, each sporting sunglasses in different styles. I also liked the fact that the other wall had display boxes instead of the display columns that we see at most eyewear stores. It makes browsing through the store easy, without crowding you with too many sunglasses. As far as what they have on offer is concerned, their
stock had a series of hits and misses for me. But, when it comes to sunglasses, it all depends on your fashion sense and so, we’re sure that with their extensive range, they will have something to suit everyone’s taste. The display itself assures you that from cat eyes and wayfarers, to aviators and round and square-shaped frames, you’ll find everything here. Their brand list is even more impressive, ranging from Tom Ford and Salvatore Ferragamo to Chopard and Gucci. They have over 40 brands of sunglasses to shop from — a variety that is quite rare to find. They are also the only shop in the city that currently stocks a relatively new brand called Retro Super Future. Get Shaded is definitely a must-visit if you love sunglasses. However, remember that the high-end shopping experience does come at a price. The cheapest pair of sunglasses at Get Shaded will set you back by `5,000, and if you’re looking to go all out, you can end up spending as much as `2 lakh. With the large variety and luxurious shopping experience, it seems like a great place to get your next high-end pair of sunglasses. eing health conscious, I was quite excited about trying health food café, Barrio, located in the Inch by Inch Body temple. As soon as I entered the café, I was impressed by the outdoor seating, which can easily accommodate around 30 to 40 people. The bright lights that hang overhead add a vibrant touch to the café’s atmosphere. We began our meal with their healthy, Fruit Parfaits. My dining companion and I tried the Chocolate Parfait (`235), which was a little sour and extremely disappointing, so much so that I couldn’t even finish it! To overcome the sour aftertaste, I ordered their cold coffee (`155), which, thankfully, was made just the way I like my coffee — strong with very little milk and no sugar. We then opted to try their salads — Shredded Beef (`375) and Salmon Salad (`235). The shredded beef salad was delicious and rich in flavour. Probably the best dish of the night, as the beef melted in the mouth. The salmon salad however, was quite average and a little too salty. >> While Barrio has healthy variants of indulgent dishes such as burgers and tarts, the lack of flavours is a disappointment
hang ov er popular pub, the irish House, recently opened an outlet in andheri. dev goswami visits the pub and discovers that it’s a fun place, with delectable food and interesting cocktails. Find out more
F
or the most part, The Irish House looks like a regular bar — a hip restaurant with dark décor and a long bar that is the centre of attention, with its drool-worthy display of international spirits. The Irish House’s outlet in Andheri wins over other restobars and pubs because of its excellent use of space — even if each table has 2-3 people standing around it, there will still be ample space to move around comfortably, without bumping into other diners. But, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t enough space to sit; the bar alone can easily accommodate 1012 people. So, The Irish House has the luxury of space and an attractive bar, but do the drinks do it justice? Yes! Our first few sips of the Irish Trash Can (`410) and the Jameson Sperm (no, that’s not a typo; `480) were enough to assure us that we were headed towards a great night. The former is an innovatively presented cocktail, with a crumpled Red Bull can dipped in the glass. It contains four white spirits, but that was not the only reason it was a big hit with me. The bartender had managed to cut out the sweet Red Bull flavour, which, for me, has spoiled several promising cocktails. The Jameson Sperm — which they tell us is an awardwinning concoction — includes Jameson whiskey, mixed with orange and grape juice. The drink is made for whiskey lovers and while it did taste good, the proportion of both juices could be reduced a bit, to truly highlight the flavour of the Irish whiskey. We were privy to a well-crafted tasting menu, that consisted of a variety of appetisers and cocktails. We began with the Armagh Mushroom Bites (`345), which were juicy and deliciously creamy, and continued with
the Chicken Popcorn (`275), which was good, but I’d recommend that you opt for other starters, which tasted much better. The Grande Nachos (`350), though excellent, would have been a much better dish without the guacamole and sour dip — but that could be more of a personal preference. I didn’t like the Chicken Tenders (`350), a favourite of The Irish Lions rugby team, because they were too heavy. But, while all the starters tasted pretty good, the Vegetable Puffs (`350), Wasabi Japonica (`375) and Prawns on a High (`450) made our night. The puffs were filled with piping hot, deliciously cheesy vegetables, while the Wasabi Japonica was made with shrimp that was coated in a yummy, wasabi mayo. The prawns were also a hit with us — glazed with an excellent, spicy sauce — juicy and flavourful on the whole. Before we bid the restaurant and bar adieu, we tried their promotional drink for the FIFA World Cup, The Irish Hangover (`2,000; serves four) — it contains three types of rum and vodka, five types of whiskey (including Jameson), gin, tequila and Absinthe. Does it really matter what we thought about it? It’s a good drink, and surprisingly, isn’t a horrible mismatch of flavours. At the same time, it is definitely a drink to get drunk on, and we hope that they come up with something similar and give it a permanent spot on their menu. The Irish House is a fantastic addition to the suburbs and adds to the ever-growing night-life. It justifies all the brouhaha surrounding the brand and their excellent music deserves a special mention. Don’t miss out on visiting this excellent pub!
Next, we tried their pizzas, which are made with organic flour. We opted for the Italian (`475) and Classic (`325) pizzas. The Italian pizza, which contained sausage, grilled chicken and scarmorza, was delicious. If you are a vegetarian, the classic pizza is a must-try, because it is topped with sundried tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. Since both of us were big fans of Mac ‘n’ Cheese, we decided to try their Baked Mac ‘n’ Cheese (`365). Like all their other items, except the salad, this dish, topped with broccoli, zucchini and mushrooms, was average and offered nothing new. All in all, I was extremely disappointed with my visit. Apart from the beef salad and the seating area, there was nothing impressive about the café. However, the place has huge potential and can prosper, if they work a little harder on the flavours of their food and cut the Chocolate Parfait out of the menu! here’s nothing more soothing than a quick, monsoon getaway. A three to five-day trip is the perfect way to get away from the chaos and murky waters that flood the city, without having to plan a full-fledged vacation. Waterfalls are like God’s gift to mankind and there’s no better time than now to experience their breathtaking beauty. With its prolonged monsoon season, India is home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the world. Take a look at which ones you should be planning a trip to over the next few months.
>> Chitrakot waterfall is only 29 metres high but it is almost 200 metres wide in the monsoon
>> Dudhsagar waterfall is situated in Goa and is absolutely breathtaking
DuDhsagar If you remember Chennai Express, then you will know what we’re talking about when we say that the Dudhsagar waterfall is spectacular. It was featured in one of the most integral scenes of the film, and is located in the land of sun and sand — Goa, 60km away from Panjim. The name of the waterfall, which literally means the sea of milk, comes from the effect created at the end of the fall, where water transforms from blue to a frothy, milky white. The fall is the fifth highest in India and splits into four tiers during monsoon, creating a stunning visual.
Jog The Jog waterfall is located in Sagara, Karnataka and is a major tourist attraction in the region. The second highest waterfall in Asia, it is also known as the Gersoppa fall and Jogada Gundi. Jog offers a spectacular view during monsoon, when approximately 34 lakh tonnes of water gushes down a cliff. If you enjoy trekking, you can trek down the hill to get to the bottom of the fall. However, the trek can be tiring, so carry sufficient water to keep yourself hydrated.
Waterfall
Getaway Tired of trekking but still want a scenic, weekend getaway during monsoon? Yamini Walia suggests you visit some of the stunning waterfalls dotting our country
Chitrakot
athirapally
Chitrakot waterfall is located in Jagdalpur in Chattisgarh and is only 29 metres high. But, during monsoon, the water level rises and flows from the whole rock bed (behind the waterfalls), which measures close to 200 metres, offering a breathtaking view. The waterfall is among the most visited tourist spots in the region.
Athirapally waterfall is located in the Thrissur district of God’s own country — Kerala. These falls are so beautiful that they are called the Niagara Falls of India. These falls are 80 metres high and are a part of the Chalakudy river. As soon as you reach the bottom of the waterfall, you can hear the gushing sound of the water and see fisherman catching fish. For the adventurous, there are also plenty of trekking options for you to explore, around the hilly area. However, we suggest that you refrain from swimming in the water, as it can prove to be quite dangerous.
kune
>> Jog waterfall is the second highest waterfall in Asia
Kune waterfall is located in Lonavala. While the hill station has a lot to offer, nothing is more spectacular than the this waterfall. The waterfall is 200 metres high and splits into three tiers during monsoons. The location of the waterfall makes for an ideal tourist spot, so make sure that you carry some snacks to munch on while you enjoy its serene beauty. The local council has set up a park overlooking the waterfall, where you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon. However, the trek to the waterfall is not well traversed, so be prepared for muddy water.
abbey Abbey waterfall is also situated in Karnataka, but in a small town called Madikeri. The waterfall, located only 6km away from the Madikeri river, is surrounded by private coffee plantations. You will have to trek a little to reach the waterfalls, which appear quite suddenly,
>> The trek leading to Abbey waterfall is quite picturesque with the water cascading over rocks into calm pools. You can experience the falls up-close, on a hanging bridge that is built across the gorge. With the calm surroundings and stunning views, this is a waterfall that you shouldn’t miss out on!
umbrella The Umbrella waterfall is located in Bhandardara, another popular tourist spot in Maharashtra. Bhandardara is rich in flora and fauna and is surrounded by hills, lakes, valleys and forts. However, the Umbrella waterfalls are the biggest tourist attraction in the area. The fall is only 45 feet high, but the volume of water flowing through the wide waterfall is expansive. There are jetties present for people to cross the river at the fall’s end, which is something that you should try. Since, the force of the water may be dangerous, entering the restricted areas in the absence of security personnel is not recommended.
bhimlat You might be surprised to find that in the land of camels and sand dunes, there actually is a stunning waterfall! Bhimlat fall is situated near Bundi village in Rajasthan. Legend states that this fall was created by Bhim, the strongest brother of the Pandavas, for his mother Kunti. Although the fall is just 60 feet high, the cascading waters generate a pleasing, musical sound. The water from the falls go on to form a pool that is easily accessible by a flight of steps.

By giving affordable housing a priority sector lending status, the regulator has finally ceded to a long-standing demand of developers. We, at Tata Housing Development Company, welcome this (RBI) move, which eases norms for banks to raise long term funds for financing affordable housing projects. The criteria defining affordable housing aptly covers a cross-section of low-income and middle-income households, and reflects the intent of the government to deliver upon its commitment of ‘housing for all by 2022’. Availability of cheaper credit will fuel demand and will help developers like us to mobilize cheaper finance for development of affordable housing projects.

Although the inflation numbers have showed some improvement in the month of June, but the deficient monsoon may "cast a cloud" on the price front going forward, says a Dun & Bradstreet report. According to D&B, the WPI inflation and CPI inflation is likely to remain in the range of 5.2 %-5.4 % and 7.4 %-7.6 %, respectively for this month. The Monsoon rains are very crucial for the agriculture-driven Indian economy, as nearly 60 % of agricultural area is still rain-fed and rains have implications for both inflation and growth. "Even as the overall price situation showed some improvement, deficient monsoon may cast a cloud on WPI inflation outlook," Dun & Bradstreet India Senior Economist Arun Singh said.
SBI To Offer Cheaper Agri Info For Customers
Account holders of State Bank of India will soon be able to get mobile-based, personalised information on the farm sector developments at a nominal cost, the country's largest lender said yesterday. The information, to be delivered in SMS form in nine languages, will include updates on weather, input prices, crop diseases, government schemes/initiatives and market prices of produce, it said in a release. "As per the new understanding, the service would be made even more affordable to SBI’s agri customers," it said. "This service would be particularly very useful in this year considering the erratic monsoon and fluctuation in prices of agricultural commodities," it said. SBI has signed up a memorandum of understanding with RML Information Services, provider of Reuters Market Light, under which its customers can avail such updates against a nominal subscription fees, it said.

Sebi Bars Gammon Infra’s Ex-CMD From Markets
Market regulator Sebi has barred Gammon Infrastructure Projects' former CMD Abhijit Rajan from securities market after prima-facie finding him to have violated insider trading regulations in the company shares. This would be one of the few cases where CMD of a company has come under the scanner in a insider trading case. The prohibitory orders would continue till further orders, as Sebi is still continuing its investigations into the matter involving trading in Gammon Infra shares on the basis of access to 'unpublished price sensitive information' during August-September 2013 period.

symbiotic relationship between India and Japan By A Business Reporter
D
rawing comparisons between 'Abenomics and Modinomics', Japanese financial major Nomura has said that Japan can play an important role in developing India's infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. 'Abenomics' is widely used for economic policies and reform measures initiated by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, while 'Modinomics' refers to that of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had recently said that partnership with Japan was of high priority for his government. Modi was expected to visit Japan earlier this month, but the trip got postponed and may now take place later this year. "We see a growing symbiotic relationship between India and Japan as both countries share large comparative advantages and are embarking upon significant
market-opening reforms under Abenomics and Modinomics," Nomura said in a research note yesterday. According to the Japanese brokerage firm, India is at an inflection point. Under Modi's new reformminded government, the mediumterm outlook looks much improved. "A renewed sense of optimism abounds and the opportunities India presents to foreign investors – and Japanese investors in particular – seem more attainable than ever," Nomura said. The landslide May election victory for Modi, combined with Governor Raghuram Rajan at the helm of the RBI, is a potential game changer for India, it added. Both countries offer each other large comparative advantages. While, Japan can play an important role in developing India's infrastructure, India offers low costs, burgeoning markets and soon, the world's largest population, the report said. The Nomura report said under
the Modi Administration, the issues like infrastructure constraints, uncertainty of laws, archaic labour laws, myriad and complex legal procedures that are faced by Japanese investors would gradually be addressed. About 1,000 Japanese firms operate in India including brands like Honda and Suzuki in automobiles; Sony and Panasonic in electronic goods; Cannon, Ricoh and Nikon in optical instruments and Hitachi and Mitsubishi in capital goods. India-Japan bilateral trade has increased steadily over the last decade, at a compound annual growth rate of around 15 % during the period 2004-2014. However, despite this rise, the scope for greater bilateral ties remains immense as India-Japan trade accounts for a minuscule 2 % of India's total trade and around 1 % of Japan's total trade, Nomura added.

They will add value by adapting technological solutions to lower costs. The entities eligible to set up a Payments Bank include existing

he US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), a leading voice of the Indian American community has urged the Modi Government to issue infrastructure bonds for the NRI community. Suggesting that these bonds be named as “Vibrant India Bonds in order to leverage the brand awareness of “Vibrant India, USINPAC emphasizes that these bonds will help India to tap the goodwill of the Global Indian Diasporas. Says Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC, said, “It is estimated that India will need about $1.5 trillion over the next five years to finance its infrastructure needs. Since infrastructure projects are generally structured in a debt equity ratio of 70:30, it implies that India would need over 1 trillion of debt funding over the next five years. This is the right time to tap the intangible goodwill of the Indian Diasporas to-
wards a rejuvenated India by issuing these Bonds specially targeted at the Diasporas. The Indian origin communities in the United States and other countries around the world are enthused with the election of Modi government in India, and are looking for tangible ways in which to contribute to India. Vibrant India Bonds will give a clear mechanism to the Diasporas to express their support for the new path on which India has now embarked. “We have had extensive discussions on Wall Street with some of the top financial institutions, and also with leading members of the Indian Diasporas in several countries on the market viability of Vibrant India Bonds. We have had an overwhelmingly initial positive response and stand ready to spread this initiative among the community in the United States and other countries where the Diasporas have significant presence, Puri further added.

By A Business Reporter
T
he year 2013 (Calendar Year; CY) was not good for the Indian real estate sector on account of weak macro economic conditions and lower confidence levels in the country. Rising inflation combined with high borrowing rates as well as slow growth in income and job levels impacted the consumer spending. Continuance of these issues in H1CY14 and the uncertainties related to general elections resulted in low consumer confidence. Banks’ reluctance to lend to the sluggish real estate sector and drying up of other sources of finance such as FDI and PE investments resulted in increase in cost of debt for the developers. On one hand, there was a steep hike in EMIs that the buyers had to bear and on the other hand there was an increase in costs of construction and debt for the developers. On account of the subdued sentiment in CY2013 and the cautious sentiment in H1CY14, housing absorption showed negative growth and this resulted in high inventory levels. Inventory levels have remained high in most of the key cities, with Mumbai market having one of the highest inventory levels. Burdened with the high inventory, developers offered various discounts and incentive schemes to increase the sales and there was a correction in prices in most of the cities. Commercial real estate was also affected during this period. The vacancy rates have increased and the rental prices have remained stable /reduced in most of the cities. However, that seems to be changing and Residential volumes are expected to pick up from
Q4CY14 with a nominal increase in prices. Says Care Ratings “ With a stable Government at the centre, there is now more optimism in the country. As the new Government wants to focus on reviving growth, the interest rates are expected to decline in the near future. In the recent budget, the exemption limit on account of interest on loan in respect of self-occupied property has been increased to Rs.2 lakh from Rs.1.5 lakh. Based on these factors, sales of residential units are expected to pick up from the last quarter of CY2014. As per RBI data, the annual exposure of banks to home loans as a percentage of total non-food credit portfolio has remained almost stagnant in the range of 9.50% to 9.75% during FY12- FY14 period. Deeper penetration of existing banks as well as upcoming banks will increase the exposure to home loans. With rapid land and infrastructure development as well as improved standard of living in Tier II and Tier III cities, housing demand is likely to increase more in these cities. The Government’s announcement to develop 100 smart cities will also provide new opportunities for the real estate sector. On the supply side, the inventory is likely to remain high, despite the expected pick-up in sales, as developers in various cities have lined up a good number of projects in pipeline. There is a huge housing shortage in mid-income and low-income group categories. As far as prices are concerned, the downside risk has reduced considerably in metro-cities and in case of Tier II and Tier III cities, prices are likely to increase in the range of 8% to 10%, with the expected recovery in volumes.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2014
In commemoration of actor Mehmood’s 10th death anniversary on July 23, RAJESH V. GAUR and SUNEEL V. GAUR chronicle the life and times of the star.
T
he inimitable Mehmood was Bollywood’s best-known comedian, so much so that Mehmood made the comedian’s role an integral part of the storyline. Thanks to Mehmood, comedy was king in the 1960s and Mehmood was the uncrowned king of this genre. Mehmood did small roles in many films made by the production house Bombay Talkies, but his first real role in films was that of a gangster in Guru Dutt’s 'CID'. After that, Guru Dutt gave him a small part in 'Pyaasa'. While he was struggling in Bombay Talkies, he made friends with another upcoming actor Kundan Mallik. Their friendship lasted through thick and thin and they were friends forever. Kundan was a great help to him during his days of struggle. Luckily for Mehmood, he got his first noticeable break in 'Parvarish' (1958). Raj kapoor the lead actor gave him a real tough time since he was a newcomer. Years later, when Mehmood was at the peak of his career – he single-handedly spoofed the Kapoors in a triple role in the film 'Humjoli'. After 'Parvarish', Mehmood got meatier roles in films like 'Gumnam', 'Pyar Kiye Jaa' and 'Pyar Hi Pyar'. In 1961, he played the lead comedian in 'Sasural'. This was followed by hits like 'Love in Tokyo' and 'Ziddi', etc. Mehmood's fans just could not get enough of him. So high was the demand for him that producers started offering Mehmood full-length comedy films. Mehmood teamed up with come-
Arunoday frightens in ‘Pizza’! Arunoday Singh, who recently got laurels for his acts in ‘Main Tera Hero’ and ‘Jism 2’ is now awaiting his next release ‘Pizza' which should strengthen his position in the industry. We spoke to the political family scion about the film. By Sandeep Hattangadi
What is 'Pizza' all about? 'Pizza' is a 3D horror thriller which has been adapted from the Tamil blockbuster by the same name, but with an all new twist in the tale. Directed by debutant Akshay Akkineni, 'Pizza' is the story of Kunal, a pizza delivery boy, whose life is turned upside down when a delivery goes wrong and he arrives with the pizza at a couple's house. As supernatural powers come into play in that haunted house, Kunal's belief system is threatened. When he finally manages to escape, his wife Nikita goes missing. dian I S Johar, and the comic duo went on to make capers, which immortalised them in Bollywood, by incorporating their names in the film’s titles 'Johar Mehmood in Goa' followed by 'Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong'. By the early 70s, Mehmood was at the peak of his comic career. Mehmood’s super stardom caused a lot of insecurity and anxiety in Bollywood acting circles as he was a
scene stealer and overshadowed even the heroes. This was also his undoing as many big heroes did not work with him. In the 80s and 90s, he was eventually eclipsed by the new breed of comedians and retired from films. The supremely talented Mehmood will forever be remembered as the 'King of Comedy'. He taught film buffs how to laugh!
What is your character in the film? I play the house-owner to whose house the pizza is delivered and I begin to have supernatural experiences. How was it like working with the ensemble cast? Great fun. It was great to work with Akshay Oberoi and former beauty queens like Parvathy Omanakuttan and Dipannita Sharma.
How was the debutant director Akshay Akkinenni? He hails from a film family and has made some films down South. He is technically and creatively aware and has done a great job with the film. And the producer? Bejoy Nambiar himself is a director who has made acclaimed films like ‘Shaitaan’ and is a wonderful producer. What is next for you? I have Vikram Bhatt’s ‘Mr.X’ lined up and some films with Sudhir Mishra.
Does marriage feature anywhere in your life? It will, in the future. I am trouble and am woefully single even though, in Mumbai, I have this reputation of being a ladies' man. All the lovely girls I know are already in relationships, be it Nargis Fakhri, Ileana D'Cruz and so many others. Don't worry too much, Arunoday. You are sure to get hitched soon!

The seven collections from 'Nazraana' ranged from stylishly designed pieces to heavily crafted diamond jewels for the bride in genuine natural diamonds set in 14 and 18 karat gold.
ormer Miss India Parvathy Omanakuttan, who is starring in supernatural thriller 'Pizza', says the film will prove that she is more than a glamorous face. Parvathy (27) who won the beauty pageant in 2008, and since then acted in a couple of films in South, stars opposite actor Akshay Oberoi in the film, which also marks the directorial debut of Akshay Akkineni and is produced by Bejoy Nambiar and Siddharth Roy Kapur. “I want to do experimental cinema and was very conscious that I will be a part of films where I can showcase myself as an actor. I can confidently say that 'Pizza' will prove that I am just not a pretty face and can act also,” Parvathy told PTI. The actress, who had earlier done a Hindi film called 'United Six', feels an ideal launch would have been with a big banner and opposite a star, but she is happy with her role in 'Pizza'. “Everyone wants and dreams of getting launched by a big banner and opposite a big star. Parvathy accepts it is difficult for her to make her mark in the Indian film industry today because her contemporaries have the backing of their previous films. “It is difficult but I also believe every actor has his/her own way of interpreting roles,” she said, adding, she finds Alia Bhatt natural and effortless. “Nothing looks forced when you see her act. Acting should be done the way she does it. She was her best in 'Highway',” Parvathy said. A few weeks earlier, Shraddha Kapoor had invited the photographers’ ire, but because she is new, she apologised and made up. The sad fact, however, is that stars don’t care all that much about the print media anyway, since they have TV, internet and also mobiles to promote their films and put forth their views. When Anupam Kher’s altercation with a journalist had ended in stars banning the media, they didn’t work either, because many stars were friendly with journalists and found ways of defying the socalled ban. At that time, the relationship between the film industry and the media was that of cordial give and take. Now, the industry has an upper hand because of the fierce completion between publications, channels, websites, blogs, etc. Any event with a star in attendance quickly degenerates into a melee with a lot of pushing and shoving for quotes and bytes. The 27-year-old actress, who has only one release ‘Ungli’ this year, rather wants to slow down a bit by doing one film at a time. “There is nothing like that. I have not increased my fee after ‘Queen’. It’s just not about the price. I am not taking up projects like people expected me to do. They thought I will sign some 10 films after it. That’s not I am doing and people might be thinking that way,” she said. Kangana will next start shooting ‘Tanu Weds Manu 2’ with R. Madhavan in August. “I will start shooting in August. I am teaming up with Madhavan again and I am quite excited about it,” said Kangana, whose role of a no-nonsense girl was appreciated in the original film by Anand L. Rai. Kangana will begin shooting Reema Kagti’s project next year while ‘Divine Lovers’, India’s first French production starring her and Irrfan will go on floors by the year end. “I am doing one film at a time. I am not clashing my dates. In February next year, I am shooting Reema’s project and by the year end I will be shooting with Irrfan for ‘Divine Lovers’,” she added.

Anderson becomes Lewis to hear case against Anderson on July 22 highest wicket- L taker in England
LONDON: At the centre of controversy surrounding his alleged altercation with Ravindra Jadeja in Trent Bridge, fast bowler James Anderson replaced Fred Trueman as England's highest wicket-taker in the Old Blighty, where he has accounted for 230 scalps. Another Englishman, Trueman, had taken 229 wickets in this country, while former captain Ian Botham (226) was second in the list. Anderson went past Trueman when he had India opener Shikhar Dhawan caught in the third slip by Gary Ballance on the first day of the second Test at Lord's. The 30-year-old Anderson has taken 359 wickets overall in 95 Tests at an average of 30.50, with 11/71 being his best match haul. Anderson has been accused by the Indian team management of abusing and pushing Jadeja on the second day of the first Test at Trent Bridge.
ONDON: The ICC appointed Gordon Lewis AM as the Judicial Commissioner to hear the misconduct case against England paceman James Anderson and the preliminary hearing will be conducted on July 22, a day after the Lord's Test concludes here. Anderson is facing a charge under Level 3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players, following allegations that he pushed and abused India's Ravindra Jadeja during the lunch break on the second day of the Nottingham Test.
"His Honour Gordon Lewis AM is Australia’s representative on the ICC Code of Conduct Commission and his appointment, as per Article 5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, was finalised after the England cricket team responded to the Notice of Charge," ICC said in a statement. The preliminary hearing is expected to be attended by Anderson, his legal representatives and the ICC's Ethics and Regulatory Lawyer. The hearing will take place via tele-
phone conference call in which Lewis will address any preliminary issues that need to be resolved prior to setting the hearing date and will also explain the procedure that will be followed at the hearing. All Level 3 breaches carry a penalty of between four and eight Suspension Points. Two suspension points equates to a ban of one Test, or two ODIs, depending on which type of match is scheduled next for the suspended player.
Ganguly all set to be elected as CAB’s next joint secretary K
OLKATA: Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly's much-awaited entry into cricket administration will happen on July 27 when he will be elected Cricket Association of Bengal joint secretary in its 83rd Annual General Meeting (AGM). Ganguly will succeed Sujan Mukherjee whose four-year-term is getting over this month while the rest of the CAB panel will remain the same with 74-year-old veteran Jagmohan Dalmiya set to be re-elected President unopposed. Ganguly, who is doing commentary in the ongoing Pataudi Trophy in England, has already spoken to CAB
chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, CAB jointsecretary Subir Ganguly said. The last date of filing nomination is July 19 and Ganguly's nomination will be filed on behalf of his club Barisha Sporting, Subir added. Ganguly's elder brother Snehashish, however, denied having knowledge of this. "I've no idea about this," the senior Ganguly told PTI. With the third Test beginning on July 27, it is less likely that Ganguly would be seen during the AGM as he would be busy with his commentary commitments. Ganguly has also forayed into football by successfully bidding for In-
dian Super League Kolkata franchise along with city-based industrialists Harsh Neotia, Sanjiv Goenka and Utsav Parekh and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. Seasoned cricket administrator Dalmiya, on the other hand, will continue to remain at the helm of the CAB. The CAB has 121 affiliated units. EW DELHI: The ambitious High Performance Programme of Hockey India (HI) is all set to go live from next month with the launch of its website, a one of a kind interactive platform for coaches and players of the country. The website will be launched in three-phased manner with the basic level launch scheduled for next month, intermediate level by October and the elite level by December end. The website will be on the lines of International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Hockey Academy’s portal and will aim to deliver a simplified education framework for the development of coaches and players from grass roots to a high performance level. The website, a brainchild of Hockey India’s High Performance Director and Dutch legend Roelant Oltmans, will not be open to public and can only be accessed by different academies under Hockey India and its coaches and players. “It’s a part of our talent development programme. Through this programme we want to develop the skill patterns, technical patterns of young boys and girls in the country. The website will be an interactive platform which will have all necessary details about the game of hockey — tactical, technical, physical and mental aspects,” Oltmans told PTI in an exclusive chat.

Topless and tips Gary Ballance at a pub.
Gary loses balance, warned by coach Peter Moores
L
ONDON:English batsman Gary Ballance has been handed a stern warning by team’s coach Peter Moores over the lefthander’s conduct in a drunken state at a Nottingham pub after the end of the first Test match. Pictures of Ballance in a topless state with a beer can in hand was splashed all over the British newspapers but ECB has decided that a warning is enough for the talented batsman, who scored a gritty half-century in the first Test against India at Trent Bridge. According to the ‘Daily Telegraph’, “The England and Wales Cricket Board said Ballance had been reminded of his responsibilities by Moores in the build-up to the second Test against India at Lord’s, after he was pictured dancing in the nightclub and was then, according to an eyewitness, carried out drunk.” The ECB had stated Ballance would not face formal disciplinary action and would retain his place in the Test team at Lord’s.

Kroos joins Real Madrid M
ADRID: Toni Kroos will be unveiled as Real Madrid’s latest high profile signing today after the European champions agreed a six-year deal to sign the Germany World Cup winner from Bayern Munich. The 24-year-old playmaker moves to the European champions on the back of an outstanding World Cup. He scored two goals in as many minutes in the 7-1 semi-final rout of Brazil, en route to overcoming Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s final. Kroos is due to be unveiled by his new employers at a press conference later today. Real hailed their latest catch as “one of the most important players of the moment”.
GLASGOW: With a well balanced unit at his disposal, Indian women hockey team’s chief coach Neil Hawgood is confident that his young team will deliver their best result at the upcoming Commonwealth Games here. The Indian eves could not have asked for a better preparation ahead of the Glasgow Games as they routed Malaysia 6-0 in an away Test series recently to gain confidence. “While the team is young but the kind of play they showed in the recent Malaysian Tour gives me reasons to be proud of them and confidence that we will deliver our best
performance here,” Hawgood said ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to be held from July 23 to August 3. “The girls are focused on their
first match against Canada and we are working on the right team combination keeping the opponents in mind,” he said. “The practice sessions are helping us to get acclimatised to the weather conditions. The focus today was passes and penalty corner conversions and it was a positive session as the girls looked all glued to their goal ahead,” the Australian added. Captain of Indian women’s hockey team, Ritu Rani too expressed satisfaction with their preparations for the upcoming quadrennial event.
“The training sessions are picking up pace day by day as the tournament is approaching. The players are giving their best during practice sessions. We are currently working on our penalty corner strategy and are confident of a winning start to the tournament,” Ritu said. “The recent success story of the Malaysian Tour has helped in lifting our confidence and we are eager to deliver similar results in the upcoming matches.” The Indian eves are placed in Group A along side Canada, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa.

EW DELHI: Indian Super League franchise Delhi Dynamos have gone the Dutch way as they today announced an alliance with renowned club Feyenoord FC, which would help in the “overall development” of the team besides providing players and technical staff in the muchawaited inaugural season. As part of the alliance with franchise owner DEN, Feyenoord will share its immense knowledge of the sport with the Delhi side. Announcing the launch of the team for the upcoming Indian Super League, Chairman and Managing Director of DEN Net-
works, Sameer Manchanda said, “Football is the world’s biggest sport and is now set to become India’s leading sport. We hope the Delhi Dynamos will inject pride and passion to all Delhiites and football fans of the region. “With Feyenoord Rotterdam, we look forward to building a team of world-class players who can inspire with their skills and represent our city’s hopes and aspirations. Our dream is to take India to the global football stage and ultimately to the FIFA World Cup. They will assist us in overall development of the club and its initiatives.”
IO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian footballing legend-turnedpolitician Romario yesterday stepped up criticism of Brazil’s Football Confederation (CBF), demanding a clear out at the top. During a World Cup which saw the five-time champions crushed in the semi-finals by eventual champion Germany, 1994 champion Romario said the game’s rulers were corrupt. Now a lawmaker, he repeated his distaste for then in a speech to fellow lawmakers. “Marco Polo del Nero is to lead the CBF for the next four years. Do you think this man is capable of
overseeing change? I am sure he isn’t,” said Romario. Del Nero will take over next year from Jose Maria Marin, but Romario thinks he is more of the same at the age of 73 — even if he is a decade younger than the incumbent. “This obscure and clandestine election needs to be annulled,” said Romario of last year’s naming of De Nero as the new man in charge. “Brazilian football doesn’t deserve to be run by a gang which already showed itself incompetent ... Which rakes in money and does with it as it sees fit but not for the good of our football.”

UMBAI: Nikhat Zareen is one individual who is viewed with utmost pride by almost the entire city of Hyderabad. However, few years back, the 18-year-old Zareen faced a barrage criticism and discouragment, as she wished to pursue a profession, which many considered was not exactly in line with what her religion professed. But the courageous young lass, ever eager to shatter all stereotypes, desperately wanted to realise her dreams and aspirations and in the process defied all odds. Wanting to tread the path taken by her childhood idol and inspired by stories of the heavyweight legend Mohammed Ali, Nikhat is today a gold medallist at a Golden Glove boxing tournament in Serbia held recently. Speaking with pride, she tells ADC, that she is the only woman Muslim boxer in Nizamabad and Hyderabad. “No Muslim woman in the entire district of Hyderabad has taken up boxing as a profession, let alone me and my sisters. Forget boxing, a normal Muslim girl finds it difficult to go out of her house alone. There have been many who have told me as to how can a Muslim girl enter in to the boxing arena? There were issues in my family and I was told to quit this profession but

Nikhat who participates in the 51-kg category said it was her father, Mohammad Jameel Ahmed, who pushed her in to the ring and from then on there was no looking back. She said a story from her coach Shamshuddin increased her determination to focus on her goals. “I had heard a story of Mohammed Ali who lost his cycle and then he decided to teach the ones who robbed his cycle that he isn’t one to be trifled with, getting back his cycle after exchanging more than a few blows in the process. Not just that, he
proved to the world that he was the best. My coach told me this story, else I wouldn’t’ have taken up this sport,” said Nikhat, a resident of Nizamabad. EAGERLY TAKING BLOWS IN THE BOYS CLASS Nikhat who is part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program which has 28 athletes in its fold said that since there were no girls to train with in Nizamabad, she had to compete with the boys. She said that she took so much beating in the ring, that it toughened up her game and approach immeasurably that she is now able to effectively beat her op-
ponents. “I participated in a tournament in the Golden Glove boxing tournament in Serbia where I competed in four bouts. I won all of them via knock-outs. But this wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t fought with the boys. I used to be beaten and knocked out but that is how I learned the sport. It made me tough. There is no girl in Hyderabad who has taken up this sport. And where I used to train, there were boys from my own community and we all used to train without much facilities. To come from a small district and compete at the international level isn’t a small

GOT THE RESPECT I WISHED TO COMMAND She said it all changed when she started winning medals at the junior level. The attitude from within her family and also among her elders changed drastically. “When I started winning medals, people started admiring me especially due to the fact that I was a Muslim girl from Hyderabad. Now everyone hopes that I represent the country and get medals for my country.”
MY IDOL, MARY KOM She hasn’t met Mary Kom but idolises her a lot a for what she has done to the sport. Her case is identical to ‘Eklavya’ from the epic, Mahabharata wherein Eklavya learnt the skills of archery by merely observing his Guru ‘Drronacharya’. Nikhat, too states that she has learnt a lot from Mary Kom. “I haven’t met her, but when I become a senior and partcipate in the Senior Nationals I shall come face to face with her. I have never spoken to Mary Kom but when I reach the senior level, I shall meet her. She is my idol, I know for sure, that one day I will meet her. After Mary Kom won the medal in the Olympics, the state of boxing has improved and has received lot of recognition,” she signed off.

WOODS DELIGHTS OPEN CROWDS WITH BIRDIE BLITZ H OYLAKE (UK): Tiger Woods rolled back the years with some of the scintillating golf that made him a 14-time major winner as he carded a three-under par 69 in today's opening round at the British Open. A marvellous run of five birdies in six holes down the stretch leaves him three shots off the clubhouse pace set by Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland. After the worst possible start on his return to the scene of his 2006 triumph at Hoylake, the 12th of his 14 majors, Woods electrified the crowd as they roared him home on a baking hot day at Royal Liverpool. "That was a rough start there, bogeying the first two but I stayed patient," Woods told BBC Sport. "I figured it was one of those days where someone would shoot seven under par today and I had to just get in there and use the par fives I had to play. "If you've been off a few months

it can be tough, compound that with surgery and it's hard. I know what it's like to win here but the golf course is completely different to when I won in 2006, it's much lusher. The weather forecast will change things over the next few days though," added Woods. The hype and tension surrounding the American and how he would perform, in just his second tournament since he underwent back surgery in a bid to resurrect his career, was telling and the former world number one began with two nervous bogeys to open his round. But the global icon parred the third and then began to hit his stride with his first birdie of the day at the par five fifth to return to one over. As the crowds following the 38year-old around the flat par-72 layout grew, Woods began to rise to the occasion, sparked by a winding putt from the edge of the 11th green that saw him shake his fist in celebration.
Female Pak player who spoke out on harassment commits suicide K
ARACHI: A female Pakistani cricketer who committed suicide by drinking acid was under extreme stress after an administrator sued her for pursuing a sexual harassment case against him, her cousin said. Halima Rafique, a 17-year-old allrounder from the central city of Multan died in her home on Sunday in a case that has shocked both fans and women's rights activists, who have accused cricket authorities of covering up her damaging claims.
Top seeds Dharmamer, Laa advance to second round M
UMBAI: Maharashtra’s Kaushal Dharmamer, the top seed, staved off a spirited challenge from Ribya Jokom of Arunachal Pradesh en route to a 21-19, 21-17 win in a boy’s under19 singles first round match of the 3rd Gautam Thakkar Memorial All India Junior Badminton Tournament 2014, hosted by the GTMBA (Gautam Thakkar Memorial Badminton Association) and Bombay Gymkhana and being played at the Bombay Gymkhana courts on Thursday. Second seed Talar Laa also from Arunachal Pradesh marched into the second round with a convincing 21-16, 21-14 victory against Kartikey Gulshan Kumar in another first round match. In the girl’s under-19 competition, the top two seed Reshma Karthik representing Air India and Maharashtra’s Reevati Devasthale, in contrasting fashion won their first round ties.
Rafique along with four other domestic cricketers -- Seema Javed, Hina Ghafoor, Kiran Irshad and Saba Ghafoor -- had jointly levelled the charges against Multan Cricket Club chairman Maulvi Sultan Alam and selector Mohammad Javed in a television show in June last year. The allegations rocked the cricketing establishment in the deeply conservative country where the women's game only recently gained prominence and male non-family members are barred from watching
matches at stadiums. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) formed a two-member inquiry committee which in October cleared the officials of any wrongdoing and banned all five women from playing for six months. Three of the women changed their statements before the committee, while Ghafoor and Rafique declined to appear, amid speculation that the women had been pressured to back down. Last week, Alam filed a defama-
tion case against the television channel officials as well as the cricketers seeking damages of 20 million rupees ($20,000). Halima's family said the lawsuit had pushed her over the edge. "It's tragic," Rashid Rafique, cousin and brother-in-law of Halima told AFP from Multan on phone. "She was very worried and we feel that the tension took her life." Punjab law minister Rana Mashood, also a minister for sports, has ordered an inquiry.

India leap three places to 151, Germany top FIFA rankings
NEW DELHI: The Indian men's football team has gone up three places to be ranked 151th in the FIFA rankings, which is topped by recently-crowned world champions Germany. India, who were ranked 154th last month, have 144 points in their kitty. Germany returned to the top of FIFA's world rankings for the first time in around 20 years, riding on their superb show in the recently-concluded Football World Cup, where they clinched the title by defeating Argentina 1-0 at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana in the finals. Germany have moved up a position to be at the top of the chart. Lionel Messi's Argentina have gained three places to be at second spot, while the Netherlands jumped 12 rungs into third after their third-place finish at the World Cup. The James Rodriguez-inspired Colombia earned four places to reach the fourth position, while Belgium (+6) and Uruguay (+1) also earned places to climb up the ladder to be in fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Brazil's not-so-impressive show at the World Cup has pushed them to number seven, a drop of four spots, while Spain fell seven spots to eighth. Costa Rica's remarkable run in the World Cup was rewarded with a jump of 12 places to 16th. But England's first round exit resulted in them losing 10 places to be at 20th spot, their lowest ranking in 18 years.
