esterday, Mumbaikars were again left stranded as several rickshaws and taxis went off the roads. There was chaos in parts of the city and suburbs. The strike which started from morning was led by Shashank Rao's union - the Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union and his supporters made sure that no autorickshaw from their union plied in the city. Interestingly, the Shiv Sena affiliated union and its supporters allowed the autorickshaw drivers to ply on the road with the Sena's flag on their vehicles. The other autorickshaw and taxi unions in the city did not support the strike and assured that the autorickshaw drivers of their unions plied without any fear. Reacting to the strike, autorickshaw drivers said that their unions have promised to give them compensation and they will start plying. Govind Kamble (40), an autorickshaw driver plying outside the Ghatkopar station said, “In the morning, the transport minister came and met us and asked us to ply as the Mumbaikars were getting affected. Our union leaders also spoke to us and promised us to give

deadly E coli bacteria that can cause kidney failure, urinary tract infections, diarrhoa and at times lead to death. The Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh has dubbed the report as 'very serious', as 200 of 600 street food samples were found positive with the lethal bacteria. According to an official document issued by the BMC regarding this matter, all A-ward officials including Medical Officer of Health have issued show-cause notices to 13 food stall vendors where E-coli contamination was found, and after taking approval from the Dy MC.

However, Shashank Rao of the Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union had a different view about the strike led by him. “We approached the for a strike? Foundation of under-construction building rises 15 feet in Borivli I

n what appears to be sheer negligence, the foundation of an under construction tower (tall building) in Chikuwadi, Borivli (West) near Jogger's Park has risen from its original position up to 15 feet. Kishor Gandhi, Ward Officer for R/Central Ward confirmed the news. Satish Gone, Assistant Engineer of Building Department described the scenario saying, “The water level rose beneath the basement at levels 1 and 2 which have almost been completed.” Ward officer Gandhi claims to have sent an immediate report to the BMC head officer to determine the techincal faults. “Once the authorities probe the matter, appropriate action will be taken against those who done this blunder,” Gandhi said.

A man’s finger length can predict if he is a ‘good date’

LADIES, if you are wondering whether to go on a date with a man, check out his fingers! The ratio of a man's index finger to his ring finger can be a clue to how good of a date he will be, according to a new study. Men with masculinised fingers -- short index finger in comparison to ring finger are more likely to make greater efforts toward impressing their girlfriend or someone they are romantically interested in, researchers have found.

Previous research has shown that prenatal exposure to the hormones testosterone and estrogen shapes the length of our fingers. "By measuring someone's finger lengths, we have an indicator of someone's disposition to engage in behaviours that have been associated to testosterone or estrogen," researchers said. In the study, a team of researchers from Concordia University, McGill University, Miami University, Universidade de Brasilia and HEC Montreal set out to determine if finger lengths are predictive of consumer behaviours used to woo potential or current boyfriends and girlfriends.

The researchers conducted two studies with undergraduate students and found that to attract women, men with masculinised fingers are more likely to buy dinners for women at nice restaurants, go to the gym, wear stylish clothes, and show off expensive items to women. These men are also more likely to give romantic gifts like flowers and chocolates to romantic partners. Researchers also found that women with feminised fingers — a longer index finger relative to the ring finger — are likely to make efforts toward impressing someone they are romantically interested in. Women with feminised fingers are more likely to wear makeup, wear stylish clothes, use a special perfume, go out to meet men, wear a necklace, use

he state government will amend section one of the Maharashtra Rajyabhasha Act, 1964 to remove the ambiguity and clearly define that Marathi will be the official state language, stated Minister for School Education and Cultural Affairs Vinod Tawde. Speaking to newspersons at his Mantralaya office, he said that unlike similar acts enacted by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which have clearly declared that Kannada, Telugu and Tamil as official state languages respectively, the state law was ambigious on that aspect. He said that although the extent of the law was applicable all over the state, section 2 (c) of the law left an ambiguity that since Marathi

using Devnagiri font, wherever it is not possible Hindi font could be used. Tawde stated that the amendment to the law will be moved in the ensuing monsoon session of the state legislature in July. He said that the need is being felt for the amendment because with the inclusion of Skill Development as the third subject, there is possibility that it will replace Marathi language wherever it is the third language. Advocating the need to make Marathi as the compulsory language in education, Tawde further argued that those who stay in Maharashtra or do business in the state should have the knowledge of Marathi. He further added that although the state has adopted Marathi as the language of official business, the compulsory enforcement is a matter of insisting and not

insisting upon it. The minister stated that it has been in principle accepted that Marathi should be taught in schools, the government is seeking opinion of educationist on having a 100 marks, or 50 marks paper or grading policy for the subject. Commenting upon the full 100 per cent marks being scored by students in Marathi essay questions in SSC exams and the high percentage of students failing in ninth standard so that the schools have 100 per cent results in SSC exams, he said that these aspects are being studied by educationist and board curiculum experts. Tawde stated that the board authorities were also seized of the matter of introducing multiple choice answers, and on whether emphasis should be laid on descriptions or intelligence in answers.

tion and other safety aspects are being incorporated in the new rules. Raote added that following the Uber cab incident in New Delhi, the police has completed a check of all the drivers of these Fleet Taxi services. Referring to the statewide auto rickshaw and taxi strike yesterday, he said that the real purpose of the strike was these Fleet Taxis rather than the fare hike issue. Raote who undertook a auto rickshaw ride in Western and Eastern suburbs argued that the strike was partial in some suburbs and barring some parts of Pune, the strike did not evoke any response in other parts.

KEM Hospital to file complaint against errant doctor

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

Complaint being filed after the hospital was instructed to do so by the deputy chief of the BMC

By Abhishek Vissapragada

T

he KEM Hospital at Parel will be filing a complaint soon against Dr. M.L. Saraf, officials told the ADC on Wednesday. The complaint is being filed after Deputy Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Sanjay Deshmukh ordered the hospital to do so. Dean of KEM Hospital Avinash Supe said that the legal department of the hospital will be filing the complaint at Bhoiwada police station. “We had received the order from Dehsmukhji and we referred the complaint to our legal department. At first we thought whether we should file a FIR against the doctor but there is already a FIR against him at another police station. We will be filing the complaint against him at the police station,” said Supe. Supe said that he had sent a letter to the police station to file a complaint against Saraf.

Gitika Ghosh, Nandini Suchde's mother, who died in January 2013 at the Bombay Hospital. “I don't know under which sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) the case will be filed. I had sent a letter requesting them to do so,” said Supe. Senior police inspector (SPI) Sunil Tondwankar also could not reveal any details of the case. The complaint is being filed after a Colaba resident, Nandini Suchde had sent a letter to Deshmukh in December 2014. Saraf also has two other FIRs filed against

him by Suchde under various sections of the IPC. Suchde's mother Gitika Ghosh, under Saraf's care died in Bombay Hospital in January 2013. After Ghosh's death, Suchde wrote to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) and the Azad Maidan police in July 2013. The cops then wrote to J J Hospital, asking for opinion. On September 27, 2013, Suchde and the police received a letter from J J Hospital, stating Ghosh’s death was due to “professional negligence”. A case was registered against Saraf and four other doctors on the panel which treated Ghosh, under Sections 309 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 201 (giving false information), 420 (cheating), 467 (forging documents), 471 (fraudulent use of documents) 109 (abetment) of the IPC. Suchde filed a Right To Information (RTI) application with the MMC to ascertain if Saraf was registered

with the Council. A reply in December 2013 stated he was not registered with MMC, and had, in fact, not renewed his licence since 1988. Suchde filed more applications and, armed with the replies, approached the police to file a case. “Dr. Saraf was receiving monthly salaries of Rs 500, Rs 700 and Rs 1,000 during his tenure in KEM hospital from 1975 to 2005. He was also a part of two other reputed institutions. How could he have continued his practice for almost 27 years without a licence?” wondered Suchde. Saraf is currently a consultant for General Orthopedics, Joint Replacement Surgery and Arthroscopy and the Head of the Orthopedics Department at Bombay Hospital. “I seek justice for my mother and I hope in the near future I get it,” said Suchde. The ADC has documents with regards to the case that was shared by Nandini Suchde.

Sr PIs get tongue-tied before the big chief By Zuber Ansari

ighty four police inspectors from Mumbai are due for posting as Senior Police Inspectors -- elsewhere in the state. Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria called them all to his office two days ago and

asked them where they would like to be posted. A lady police inspector who was nervous in front of her chief remained silent. He asked her twice, but she could not summon enough courage to reply. The police inspectors are

aware that at new police stations, they will encounter several problems. Getting admission for their children would be a difficult task. The police got tongue-tied before the big chief who appears to have a problem about where they should be posted.

Drunken lawyer’s bail plea rejected for second time By Zuber Ansari

T

he hearing of the bail application filed by drunk driving accused Janhavi Gadkar was rejected for the second time by the Kurla court on Wednesday afternoon after her lawyer sought more time since they had not yet received her medical reports from the JJ Hospital.Janhavi’s lawyer Mahesh Sabnis reached the Kurla Metropolitan Magistrate court around 2:45 pm

however opposed the bail application saying Janhavi might again commit a similar offence while the ‘intervention lawyer’ hired by the Sabuwala family – who lost Salim Sabuwala (50) and the family’s trusted taxi driver Sayyad Hussain – claimed she is likely to tamper with the evidence as she knows the nitty gritties of the law by virtue of being a lawyer herself. The court had last week remanded her to judicial custody until June 26

Janhavi’s bail plea was rejected for the second consecutive time. and sought an adjournment as the medical report they had sought from the JJ Hospital – that detailed the injury to her arm and for which they had been demanding medical attention at a leading hospital – had not yet reached them. Metropolitan judge Rucha Khedekar allowed the same and adjourned the matter until June 22.The bail application was last heard on Monday when Sabnis argued that the police had concluded his client’s questioning and she had given a detailed statement too, which was reasonable enough ground for being granted bail. The police

after it refused the RCF police another extension for interrogative custody. The same day, Sabnis had filed a bail application on her behalf and the first hearing on the matter was scheduled on Monday.Last Tuesday, Janhavi, a Vice President (legal) with Reliance Industries, drove her Audi Q3 in a heavily drunken state against the traffic on the southbound carriageway of the Eastern Freeway and collided head on with a cab killing Salim and Sayyad. The Sabuwalas were coming back home from Bhiwandi after celebrating their youngest son, Noman's performance in the SSC exams.

No freedom of expression in UP I

N Uttar Pradesh, a minister can burn a man alive and get away with it. Minister Ram Murti Singh is alleged to be involved in a heinous crime, but the police make no effort to arrest him. The minister is said to be absconding. The police will not arrest him. Five policemen who are involved in crime have been suspended. They should have been arrested and charged with committing crime. There is strong evidence against them. The dying man’s declaration should have been enough for putting them under arrest. The murder, it was stated, was committed because the journalist exposed some wrong-doing of the minister. The family of the victim has gone on a dharna. They have approached the BJP government at the Centre. They know well that no useful purpose will be saved by approaching the state government. What is to be noted also is that the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh is taking no action. The lack of action on his part shows clearly he is all set to protect his minister. Uttar Pradesh has always been a state where ministers behave in a most autocratic way. They do not seem to be bothered in the least about the constitutional right to freedom of expression. They do not seem to have learnt any lesson from the decimation in the Lok Sabha elections. They have some more time to be in office, but any chance of their coming to power again is dim.

HIV SENA, the longest sustained political body in India is entering its golden jubilee year tomorrow. A big extravaganza has been planned throughout the year by the party functionaries, that would take off in its traditional anniversary function tomorrow. This is the time for the party functionaries and workers to look back and take a sincere stock of what they achieved during the last half a century and what they lost, apart from opportunities that they allowed to pass by only because of the short-sighted attitude of its leaders. Considering the fact that by nature Shiv Sena is a militant but a nationalist organization, not many party workers and leaders take criticism against them in the right sense and attitude. Therefore, many analysts and political thinkers and observers think twice, thrice and many times to finally give their plan to write on the Sena affairs. This scenario often worked against the healthy growth of the party as none from outside dared to show them their shortcomings. The party had to face the music finally. Sena exhibited many exclusive features during its existence of 49 years. The most salient feature is that the organization remained intact all through under one leader it's Chief Balasaheb Thackeray, when he was alive till two years ago. After his sad demise, his son Uddhav took over and he is also accepted by the rank and the file. This has not happened in any political outfit in India after Independence. All the parties which came into force when Sena was born in 1966 either split vertically, horizontally or ceased to exist. Whether Congress, Janata Party, Samajwadi Party, Communists, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), all of them faced splits but not the Sena. Not that the party did not receive shocks of it's frontline leaders deserting the party. From Ganesh Naik and Chhagan Bhujbal in 1991 to Raj Thackeray and Narayan Rane in 2006, many significant leaders left the party for personal or socio-political reasons and built their own political empires. However, not many Shiv Sainiks left with these leaders, thus the party remain intact.

A movement that evolved Unlike many regional political parties, Shiv Sena came into existence as a 'movement' to be later converted into an 'organisation'. It was for contesting elections; it had to become a 'political party'. The core philosophy of the outfit still remains an organization. The psychological distinction between an organization and a political party proved to be advantageous to the Sena as during its political journey, Sena suffered many humiliating defeats in elections. However, unlike many

political parties, including the Congress, Sena did not face any splits. Rather, Sena grew faster after defeats than after wins. Political philosophy of the Sena has always intrigued many. The party that was launched in 1966, soon after the formation of Maharashtra, a state of Marathi-speaking people, had made its initial plank of 'protection of legitimate rights of the sons of the soil (Marathi speaking people)'. This cry worked to mobilize Marathi-speaking people in and around Mumbai. But failed to make them win elections at the state level. As a result, from 1967 to 1985, the Sena could win only one seat in each state Assembly election. It was in 1986, when Thackeray openly spoke of protection of Hindus, that Sena won a second seat. Though this result was quashed by the Bombay High Court, in the next 1991 elections, the party won more than 50 seats and in 1995, it grabbed power in Maharashtra with an alliance with the

Diagonally opposite views

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the initial period, the Sena went against South Indians, then Gujaratis, later Communists followed by North Indians. In a sense, it always provoked 'Marathi Manoos' to divide society. This stand helped the Sena leaders to have its sway over the Marathispeaking masses. However, that was not enough to win elections at state or union levels. Sena continued winning civic elections in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan but could hardly make any impact in other cities like Pune, Kolhapur, Aurangabad or Nagpur. It was only after the Sena took Hindutva plank and joined hands with the BJP, that it started winning in the interiors of Maharashtra. By now the Sena has made its inroads in all regions of the state, particularly in Konkan belt and in Marathwada. The sugar-belt of Western and South Maharashtra continued to remain with the Congress and later with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) under the Maratha stalwart, Sharad Pawar. while the Vidarbha region always had BJP domination.

ODAY is a gift from God - that is why it is called the present. Are you grateful? If you are grateful, you do not belong to me. When someone gives you something, you are grateful; that means you feel separate. You do not feel grateful to yourself. Gratefulness means you do not feel part of the Master. When you go beyond gratefulness, then union happens. No. “I,” no “you” remains. You are part of the Master. You are just one being with a thousand heads and a thousand arms, but with one heart. Gratefulness is inevitable. You have got to be grateful on the Path, but you have to transcend gratefulness. Better stop being grateful. You are not grateful to your own hand that feeds you. It is better to stop being grateful. When you are grateful then you become the centre of attention, you feel more important. When you are grateful to God for having received something beautiful, for example,

Sena always maintained love-hate relationship with the BJP. Though both the parties continued to contest elections as an alliance, it was always a 'broken marriage'. Their togetherness yielded sweet fruits in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when the alliance brought in four more splinter groups, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana of Raju Shetti, Republican Party of India (A) under Ramdas Athawale, Shiv Sangram Sena under Vinayak Mete and Bahujan Samaj Party of Sadabhau Khot. This grand alliance won 42 out of 48 seats, leaving the Congress (2) and NCP (4) of the six seats. Despite this huge victory, the alliance of the Sena-BJP could not last as they contested the next Assembly elections separately. Though the BJP won 123 seats, leaving the Sena only 63; none could form the government on a singular strength. This forced the Sena-BJP to come closer. Though the Sena joined the government, it received a humiliating treatment in the government. It continues to be a part of the government, but no one knows how long the relationship would continue.

MATTER & SPIRIT

The bones of contention are many. The Sena and the BJP have diagonally opposite views on many issues. While the Sena has always been campaigning for united Maharashtra, the BJP is for smaller states and has announced to work for separate Vidarbha state. On Konkan's Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant controversy, the BJP has already gone ahead and PM Narendra Modi has signed MoU with a company in France. Here, the Sena is mobilizing mass support to oppose the project. In short, the two partners of the alliance have turned out to be strange bed-fellows. How long such a marriage can last? As the Sena enters its Golden Jubilee Year, the moot question is what next? On one hand the BJP central leadership is in a mood to chop wings of regional forces all over. Will the Sena be the victim of this strategy? Or will it emerge stronger if the BJP tries its tricks against it? The acid test would be the forthcoming elections for nine municipal corporations in major cities like Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nagpur. The verdict of these elections, will determine the future course of Maharashtra politics and off course, the future of the Sena. In short the Sena finds itself on crossroads. The leaders will have to decide the direction now. Tomorrow would be too late! Till then let's wish the Sena leaders and lakhs of its dedicated workers cheers on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee Year! Jai Maharashtra! Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut ceived something! Otherwise how can you be indebted? Those who have received should feel indebted. Be thankful for having received. The more abundance you have, the more indebted you will feel. And when you feel indebted and grateful, more abundance comes to you. “Feel indebted. Feel grateful. Then abundance grows.”

Abundance and indebtedness coexist. You think you are indebted, but really you are not. Smoke and mirrors show of billionaire Bhujbal IN scam tainted country like India, political big wigs take advantage of the situation and make hay while the sun shines. This has happened in Maharashtra political circle and after all the happenings now search is taking place to fix NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal. A Special Investigation Team of the state's Anti-Corruption Bureau swooped down on 17 properties belonging to Bhujpal and family members made a big news in the press. Ever since Modi Government took charge at the Centre, number of scams are unearthed and action taken and this include members of the NDA leaders as well. Apart from NCP leader his son, nephew are also in net and 17 properties worth Rs. 2,350 crore came under scanner. The searches were carried out at various parts of Maharashtra and Anti-Corruption Bureau officers swooped down on 17 properties belonging to Chhagan this reveals the real tale of how Bhujbal and his family members power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. mirrors show being played out for the Indian people. It is part of the BJP's image building exercise to portray itself as a party that is tough on corruption. I can predict what is going to happen next. Bhujbal will be chargesheeted and immediately let out on bail. He may even be found guilty by a lower court, after which his lawyers will immediately appeal; and Bhujbal will continue on his merry way. In the Indian context, appeal means that the case will be put into cold storage. CM Devendra Fadnavis can throw up his hands and declare that he did everything he could; and that now it is all up to the judiciary. Thus honour will be served and the public satisfied. The reality is that where corruption is concerned, politicians of every single political party have formed a cosy club where they look out for each other. They have to because most of them have skeletons in their own closets. Besides, they don't consider corruption to be a crime, but merely one of the major perks of office.

After Janhavi, now Shivani AFTER Janhavi Gadkar, now another incident occurred recently when a woman, identified as Shivani Bali a 42-year-old Worli resident working with a private firm, was caught driving in an inebriated state at the Bandra Reclamation. Though Jahanvi co-operated with the Police, Shivani was rude and even told the cops that if her father comes to know that she has been intercepted by the cops, they would be suspended. But what is bewildering is that the cops failed to ask her who her father was, his status, whether in the Police Department, an Industrialist and or a Politician. Women seem to be competing with male driving in an inebriated state and causing accidents. The Police Department must take up this issue very seriously and be extremely strict on women driving in inebriated state and arrest them even if the women happens to be a daughter or a wife of a politician or from the Police department. No discrimination should be shown. — K. V. Raman, Malad

Hot, sweet and sour pursuits

VIP and Indian culture

Misuse of Sec 498A of IPC

EVERYDAY, we have some news about the VIP culture and how it is being abused by politicians, bureaucrats and industrialists. Then, there are these SS men (who do not belong to any secret service as their initials indicate) screaming for Marathi and Maharashtrian culture. Similarly, in other states, each politician is talking about his own culture and how to save it. The tragedy of all this is that in this effort to safeguard their own Geo-lingual identity, we seem to have forgotten that we are first Indians and that is all we will ever be. However, what is Indian culture? We cannot pin it down because we are originally fro small states with their own identities, languages, rites, rituals and religious beliefs that we refuse to put aside and infuse into one uniform Indian culture. Even the new government has not woken up to this fact and with those old men from the RSS, it would be hard to imagine any real move in the correct direction.

THE arrogant defiance of the cops by a drunken woman driver in Mumbai is the result of the ultra lenient Indian Laws which are too soft on female accused. Crime statistics shows us that very few women offenders are punished, irrespective of the seriousness of their crimes. They are either let off with LETTER OF a mild warning or are THE DAY awarded a lighter punishment. This serves as an encouragement to the unscrupulous women who take advantage of unjust provisions enunciated in statute books. Glaring examples are the spate of false complaints lodged by married women against their hubbies and in-laws u/s 498A and the D V Act.

A LOT of praise has been showered on the army for the pursuit and elimination of a group of militants across the Indo-Myanmar border. The Myanmar government gave permission. The question is - why not have a default permission for say upto 10 km to engage any militants, with a reciprocal arrangement? That will be a better preventive measure than trying for a revenge operation. But look at the chance we missed from 1948 onwards in PoK. We claim that it is our territory, so we should have continuously entered PoK at least to an extent to keep militants far away and always on the alert. By not doing so, we have virtually written off PoK. Even during Kargil, the air-force was not used as they would have to fly into PoK – this when Pakistan was and is still sitting right in our territory! By our inactions we have signed off PoK and in any case possession for 67 years is nine-tenths of the law. The blame for the snafus in PoK and AksaiChin lies with same person – Jawaharlal Nehru.

Not MBMC’s job to stop illegal constructions in Uttan, MMRDA will do it Nature under threat as scenic coastal villages witness sudden spurt in illegal construction activities By Suresh Golani

lready fallen prey to haphazard unauthorized development, the picturesque coastal belt in and around Uttan near Bhayandar has been witnessing a rather unusual boom in illegal construction activity for the past two months. Reason: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has stopped taking action against them after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officially intimated their decision of shouldering the responsibility to keep a tab and tackle the illegal activities. Refraining any action against illegal constructions in coastal areas of Chowk, Dongri, Pali, Tarodi and Uttan villages, civic chief Achyut Hange in his order dated May 5 has limited the role of ward officers and other concerned departments to just accepting and forwarding complaints to the MMRDA. How do you convince your parents that an arranged marriage isn’t the right option for you? Dev Goswami & Anindra Siqueira bring you a few fun tricks that will be of help

W

e can write long, spirited blog posts and social media status updates about how women deserve the freedom to decide when, whom and whether to marry. But, even though arranged marriages aren’t the norm any more, some parents still want their children to marry an eligible partner of their choice. This translates into awkward meetings with potential partners (and their families!) and having to weather uncomfortable questions about your personal life from any and every quarter. This thought alone can leave you extremely frustrated. But, what do you do if you know that arranged marriages aren’t for you and want your parents to drop the charade? We tell you how to keep this hysteria-inducing situation at arm’s length.

>> If you’re not ready for an arranged marriage, you’re going to love these fun excuses. Use them to avoid parental pressure

What you can say #1: I’m not ready! This is a common excuse that people use when they don’t want to get entangled in arranged marriages. But, how many of us are actually ready for anything? We have to jump head-first into things and hope that we don’t crash and burn. However, if you’re sure that you’re not ready, tell your parents that you’re not saying no, you just need more time. This excuse will also come in handy if you’re already interested in someone but don’t know how to break it to your parents. Telling them that you aren’t ready gives you enough time to do that. After some time has passed, you can introduce your steady boyfriend to your parents and say that you’ve found someone and are finally ready for the next step — only if your boyfriend is too of course!

#2: I’m waiting for a promotion One of the oldest excuses in the book is that you’re taking a break from men and personal relationships for a while. This response comes naturally after a break-up. But, using your career as an excuse comes in at a close second. The key to selling this excuse is to tell your parents that you would like to achieve certain things in your career before you consider getting married. This will work perfectly, especially if the promotion you keep talking about happens to be more than a few years away!

#3: I want someone who is six-feet tall, weighs under 80kgs and is richer than the ambanis Okay, perhaps the wealth condition is a bit much, but you get our drift! If you’re not comfortable with an outright refusal, this is the tactic that you should use to avoid an arranged marriage. Set the standards so high that your Continued on pg 14 «

Continued from pg 13 « parents either realise how much you hate the idea of an arranged marriage, or have to give up after trying a little.

#4: i need a two-year trial period There is some logic behind this and so, the excuse is perfect for those who aren’t completely averse to the idea of an arranged marriage, but believe that a few dinner dates and family meetings are not enough, and you not need a lot more time. Simply tell your parents that while you don’t mind them helping you find a partner, you would like to get to know to see if you are really compatible. The best part about this is that if they do agree, you can spend some time with your potential suitor, placate your parents, and still have the option of rejecting him if you don’t feel like there’s a connection. However, finding a family who is willing to play by these rules may be difficult.

long; he doesn’t seem physically fit; I don’t like his dressing sense — you’ve already drastically reduced the number of potential suitors.

the mature way out: Becoming independent This will only work if you can convince your parents that you’re serious about your future. Making your parents understand that you want to stand on your own feet before you consider getting married is a good way to stall an arranged marriage. It does come with the inherent risk of your parents pestering you to get married anyway. But, devoting yourself to your career, and making statements such as, “I will think about getting married after I’ve got a place of my own,” will get your parents off your back… for now, at least!

last resort: you be what they don’t want! Another weapon in your arsenal of deflection is to find out what the guy’s side of the family wants and then give them the opposite. When you see an opening, pounce. Here’s an example. Let’s say that your parents are close to getting things finalised with a guy that they think is perfect for you — he has a good job and is financially stable. Let’s assume you find out that his parents are keen on you cooking for him every day and playing host to guests with delicious paneer khichdi or peas pulao. Tell them you hate cooking, are terrible at it and that you’d never consider cooking on a daily basis.

What you can do if you’re in a fix: meet ‘em and boot ‘em When you have no option and your parents are adamant, your best course of action is to stick it out for a while. But, how can you get out of the sticky situation if your parents are rushing to finalise the wedding? You can reject each guy with a slew of excuses — unless you actually meet someone that you think you can spend the rest of your life with. His nose is too

Been there done that Want to find out what women experience when they are set up on arranged dates with potential suitors and their families? We speak to a few women across the city who have been in similar situations to find out the cool texters

We’ve all had our fair share of friends who prefer to text in annoying SMS-lingo, which makes understanding what they’re trying to say as difficulty as understanding David Lynch’s Muholland Drive. But, what happens when the person who loves using this language is a potential suitor? Nandini Krishnan a writer, playwright and stage actor, who has authored Hitched: The Modern Woman and Arranged Marriage, had to deal with such a situation. She tells us, “There was this one guy who used quick text to ask when I would be able to answer his call. Between his spelling and his grammar, I had no idea what he’d said — something like “Tl ur cunvnint tm. Shl cl.” He called before I had a chance to decode it, and then we had a painfully long and awful conversation, during which he asked, “So what are your hobbies?” and then said “I’m aworacious reader, yaar. I louwe to read Tom Clancy.” I wanted to curl up and wait for the world to go away!”

Playing it smart

Misbah Sayyed, a social media executive, has had it pretty easy, especially when it comes to arranged marriages. “My mother never forced me to meet any

with some of my pictures — yes, my mum is oldfashioned that way. While she was busy, I simply replaced my nicer pictures with other pictures. I won’t say they were ugly, but they weren’t visually appealing either!” What happened next? Well, the boy’s parents took one look at the pictures and realised that this was not what their son had in mind. A pretty neat move, we must say!

an audition… of sorts

>> If your potential suitor is annoying, follow these smart tricks that the women in the city used to drive them away potential men. Although, there was this one guy, who my mother was keen on pairing with me. She described him as good looking, tall, handsome and smart. And he had just two conditions. One was that I needed to be just as academically qualified as him

and two, I needed to be good looking,” The latter point put her off especially — and we aren’t surprised. But, what did surprise us is what she did next. She says, “My mother was supposed to meet the parents of the boy for lunch, and she was carrying an envelope

If you think that potential in-laws asking a girl to showcase her abilities is something that only happens in Bollywood films, you need to think again. HR manager Jolly Saxena was inexplicably asked by a potential suitor’s mother to sing! But, that isn’t even the weirdest incidents she’s been in when it comes to meeting a guy. She adds, “There was this one time when the guy’s mother took me into another room and measured my height with a measuring tape! And, another one was when I was on a Diwali break at my mum’s place and I had to meet a prospective motherin-law. The lady called me to tell me that I should not eat a lot at my mom’s place during the festive season as I may put on weight. To my surprise when I met her son he weighed a whopping 90 kilos, probably more!”

Whether you’re a small, city-based organisation looking to expand your customer base, or a large behemoth with loyal customers, all of us need to promote ourselves on a digital space. Dev Goswami & Sara Shah got insights into the field from Ritu David and Suhasini Kirloskar, who were speakers at the recent 24adp National Digital Marketer’s Conference in Pune

F

rom self-styled Twitter gurus to companies dedicated to giving you learned insights into the digital world, the importance of being able to market yourself digitally is quite apparent. Whether it is to boost your company’s recognition, or simply to build your personal brand image, digital marketing is a great tool. So, it’s not surprising that it’s slowly turning into a much sought-after career choice. At the recently held 24adp National Digital Marketer’s Conference, Ritu David spoke about incorporating the digital world into businesses, while Suhasini Kirloskar addressed the benefits of digital marketing. We asked the two women to give us some insights into the field.

Ritu DaviD Having experienced the digital media space in cities such as Sydney and Singapore, Ritu is now back in India. Digital data is something she considers her superpower and in the past, she has helped analyse investment opportunities for large banks as well as national security risk across the world. She runs Ritu David Consulting, which offers an array of consulting and corporate training services.

digital marketing firms, see what skills you lack and work hard to compensate for it. Freshers may work in a very niche space, but focus on the bigger picture — remember the client, but work for the client’s customer. Remember that we are all consumers; bring that humanity into your work.

SuhaSini KiRloSKaR Suhasini has a rich background of digital marketing — she has consulted for various firms since 2006 and is currently the chief of marketing at GS Lab, an engineering and software product company. She has held various seminars on digital marketing across the country. n How important is it for an enterprise to make its presence

felt, digitally? For most organisations today, their stakeholders — customers, potential employees and investors — spend an increasing amount of time online. This makes it very important for the enterprise to have a well thought out digital presence — from the perspective of corporate communication, marketing and branding.

n How different is the digital marketing scene in India, as

compared to other countries that you have worked in? In my experience, digital marketing in India is perceived to be lower on the corporate value chain. Digital marketers are often seen as executers rather than strategists. Digital data is a gold mine and attaining feedback is crucial in a dynamic marketplace. We need to embrace it throughout the production process and not just at the end, in order to push sales. Everyone wins as we move up the value chain. This is now beginning to happen in India as well. n What goes into getting an organisation ready for the

digital marketing? Some factors to consider include buying in from the top, fixing a clear business strategy, an awareness of your target consumer and excellent content. Copy is often dismissed as we focus on design and technology. Digital copy is different from print copy, and organisations need to create different literature for different digital mediums. Each digital marketing agency is different and will deliver a unique experience and results. Look for someone you connect with, someone you would hire to be part of your team. That is the agency for you, because they will become part of your team. n You provide consulting and corporate training to various

industries. How often do you incorporate social responsibility in your training services? My training focuses on helping my clients achieve sustainable results. The way we interact with corporations is evolving continuously and there is a strong trend towards human connection. Socially responsible organisations create positive changes in the lives of their staff, their customers, their shareholders and the community at large. These are the organisations that experience sustainable growth and create organic brand ambassadors. Social responsibility isn’t just about having a day where the organisation plants trees or cleans up the neighbourhood — it’s a way of life; it’s about honest marketing, it’s about living by the organisation’s values and it’s about engaging your stakeholders in a positive way. n Digital marketing is slowly becoming a promising career

>> Ritu David places emphasis on the importance of honest marketing and social responsibility

choice for many youngsters. What are a few aspects that a woman considering this as a career should know about? Digital marketing is just marketing on a digital medium. Some women are intimidated by the term digital and the associated term technology. If you are creative and like to draw, write or come up with new concepts, this is the place for you. If you understand people and emotions, then strategy and user experience is a solid field. The opportunities are limitless; it’s just about translating your skills onto a digital medium. Enrol in courses or intern at

n Do you think that digital marketing for a smaller

organisation is tougher than for a larger, well-known one? I don’t believe that larger is better in the digital space. In fact, the digital space is about working smarter, rather than throwing money on big ticket initiatives. There are a number of smart Goliaths who have beaten larger Davids online. It’s interesting that on the Time’s ‘The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet’ list for 2015, the top slot is held by a 25-year-old indie gamer, and not by any of the major media houses or even Hollywood celebrities. In fact, digital media facilitates precise targeting, so that your marketing spend can be used to reach exactly the right audience. n Almost every organisation today turns to digital

marketing for its growth. Do you think it’s difficult to come up with fresh ideas to market a product today? Well, breaking out of the clutter always has been, and I guess, always will be a challenge. We do need to think of more interesting ways to engage with our audience.

>> Suhasini has consulted for several digital firms since 2006

Manali is playing it quite safe here. The chevron printed peplum top is quite decent and we like how she’s kept her jewellery minimal. What stands out are her matching lipstick and nails. We don’t quite fancy her chunky wedges and messy hair either. Perhaps a sleek ponytail or a messy updo would have done her some good.

We usually love Kangana’s sense of style and her outfits are almost always on point. But, we wish she would have stayed home in this one. While Kangana looks cute as a button in this look, the outfit is just plain childish. The dress on its own would have made for a safe outfit choice, but those hot pink pumps should have stayed home.

We like how she’s let her lips take centre stage by going easy on the eye makeup and that dress shows just the right amount of skin while flattering her figure at the same time.

Had she opted for a glam updo and a more subtle makeup, we think Tabu would have looked ethereal in this outfit. We love her gorgeous dress and those ruby red nails add a royal touch to the look. And although she decided to let her dress take centre stage, some jewellery wouldn’t have hurt now, would it?

hoW to mAnAge An unsAtisfActory job I recently graduated and in such a fickle market, I’m grateful to have been hired immediately. However, I think I’m overqualified for the job. I have more to offer than this job demands and it does not do my educational qualification justice. It offers no scope for personal growth and does not fulfill my professional ambitions. Should I quit my job and look for a better position? Or should I continue doing this unsatisfactory work? — Ankita solanki, byculla dear Ankita, It’s natural to be disappointed when you don’t have your dream job. But, remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day! Every graduate has certain expectations from their first job and very often, they are let down. It’s important to remember that it’s not possible to become successful almost instantly. For a few months (in some cases, even years) people have to slog and do work that they don’t particularly enjoy until they finally reach the position that they deserve. But, don’t despair, continue looking for other opportunities. Do not quit this job as it will lead to financial instability, but at the same time, keep an eye on the job market. See if any other organisation is recruiting for a position that interests you. But, remember that only the way to achieve what you want is to take it one step at a time, and work hard to get to the top! send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

Clean it up! Walking into the men’s loo, accidently eating your co-worker’s lunch, being humiliated by a stony boss — there are several hacks that can save you from embarrassing situations! Katha Nauriyal tells you how to hold your head high the day after

R

sheepish glances or guilty smiles exchanged. Remember that not conversing can lead to an elephant in the room situation. Ask them about their work, or about how their day was. And, if you happen to have any queries about work, the conversation will move away from the situation easily!

emember hollering to someone across the road and then sprinting towards them, only to realise that you mistook a total stranger for a long-lost friend? Worse still, not knowing what else to do, you continue the conversation, trying hard to convince her about how you went to kindergarten together. All the while, you’re mentally cursing yourself for stumbling into such an awkward position! Fortunately, every embarrassing story has a saving grace. At least most do. But, while you can escape from situations with strangers fairly easily, and laugh off those with friends, what do you do when such a situation takes place at work? Here are a few tips.

so humiliAted All employees face this, and most often, by bosses of the same sex! While your boss leaves no stone unturned to reprimand you with your colleagues around, now is the time to prove that you’re an independent, selfassured woman. Rather than cringing in embarrassment or self-pity, make a statement and prove your point! Try making your boss understand why you did what you did (still maintaining professional decorum of course), even if it requires being firm.

lunch thief! So, you don’t pack your own lunch, and your box looks the same as a colleague’s. You’ve just accidentally devoured a meal that wasn’t yours! Only after you finish do you realise what you’ve done. What’s worse, is that the next day there’s a name tag on the box! As embarrassing as this is, use your skills in the kitchen to get out of this one! Prepare a small, mouth-watering dish and place it near the offended party with an apology note the next day. A home-cooked meal can help you score more brownie points than if you were to order something from an eatery close by or ignore the gaffe altogether.

the mAke-you-forgetit-All look loo issue Okay, this one is relatively common, especially if the signs outside the loos at work are not as prominently placed. However, what works here is that your male colleagues are just as embarrassed by the episode as you are! So, embrace the situation! The next time you run into them, make sure there are no

Let’s get one thing straight — walking into the men’s loo, eating someone’s lunch by mistake, flirting with a guy who turns out to be your boss’s husband, throwing up at work — whatever you have done wrong, women do always get away with it easier than men. It is, however, imperative to gauge the culture at your workplace before trying to charm your way out of such situations.

Even if you think you’re the coolest parent on the planet, the sad truth is that in certain situations you will embarrass your child. And, you will be completely oblivious to it! Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to find out if you need to change your behaviour

W

e can argue that an adult’s life is much tougher, darker and more stressful than a child’s life. But, for a child, especially a teenager, life isn’t easy either. In fact, it’s extremely complex. If your children are in their teens, you may think that you need to be cool to stay involved in their lives as the fun parent. You could be using your fun stories to embarrass your child instead. For example, while your child may be excited to tell his friends about the amazing laptop that you bought him, rest assured that he won’t want to mention the cartoonthemed bedspread that he’s been using since he was three-years-old. If your children are apprehensive about you meeting their friends it doesn’t mean they don’t like your company; they just don’t want to be embarrassed!. Answer these questions to find out if that’s true. 1. Have you ever yelled at or scolded your children in front of their friends? a. Yes. b. No. 2. When your children’s friends come over, have you ever insisted on being in the room and talking to them, making cavalier conversation? a. Yes. b. No. 3. When their friends pester you to tell them embarrassing stories about your children, do you usually give in? a. Yes. b. No. 4. Have you ever tried to talk in an accent or used terms such as cool, bro or hashtag around your children and their friends? a. Yes. b. No. 5. Have you ever been visibly drunk in front of your children’s friends over?

>> Trying to appear cool in front of your child’s friends can embarrass them!

a. Yes. b. No. 6. Do you pull your child’s cheeks — affectionately, of course — when they are around their friends? a. Yes. b. No. 7. Have you ever listened in on your child’s phone conversations and then interrupted loudly because you perceived the conversations to be inappropriate? a. Yes. b. No. Mostly As Why, oh why are you being that parent?! Alright, maybe that’s the wrong question. You probably aren’t even aware that you are embarrassing your child. The next time your children are with their friends try to see how they react to your affection! They’re probably trying to get you out of the room as quickly as possible. You’re not really doing anything wrong. Just don’t act like a teenager when your children’s friends are around. They will really appreciate it. Mostly Bs You may be a loving mother, but you do understand the importance of maintaining a certain distance. However, before you feel too pleased with yourself, remember that this doesn’t apply if you barely got mostly Bs. If that is the case, then you’re probably embarrassing your children — just not as much as those who answered it mostly As. Otherwise you’re in the clear.

« Top five How To avoid geTTing blisTers from new sHoes

The first thing that you should do to prepare for the monsoon is change your footwear! Slippery roads, muck and puddles mean that you will need a really good pair of shoes, which won’t cause the blisters or bites that new shoes often do! Purva Indulkar helps you out LuBricAte

This is a temporary alternative, but it works wonders during an emergency. If you’ve just bought a pair of shoes and have to wear them for a few hours at a stretch, simply apply petroleum jelly to those parts of your feet where you get shoe bites often. This will allow your shoes to move without friction and will also protect your skin from blisters. But, the jelly evaporates quickly as you sweat, so

>> Find an uneven ground to test new shoes on, before buying them

If the shoes you bought are the right size, but a little loose, it can be difficult to walk in them on wet, slippery roads. Get soft padding on the heels (a cobbler will do this for you) to ensure that the shape of your shoe is suitable and their grip is tight. Certain shoe manufacturers make shoes with a stiffening agent in the heel to help retain their shape and ensure that they stay on your feet.

get the fit right

A pair of shoes that you think will match your new dress is often tempting. But, how adorable the shoes look or how appropriately they match your outfit doesn’t matter; don’t buy them if they don’t

use the sock Method

Shoes that are extremely tight, or press against any part of your foot, are bound to give you shoe bites and blisters, even if you wear them for a short period of time. To avoid this, wear a pair of woollen socks — two on each foot if the shoe is pressing against your foot too tightly — and then slip on the shoes. Blow-dry the shoes at maximum heat until the shape changes. This allows the material to soften and mould according to the curves of your feet. keep some handy to apply when you start feeling the pinch.

fit! You should also avoid buying cheaper shoes as they are made from hard materials that can damage your feet. Always buy a pair that is comfortable enough to wear for at least a year.

The floors are usually cushioned in a mall or a store, so you won’t be able to gauge how they feel if you just walk up and down a few times. The streets are wildly different, and walking in new shoes (or often, any shoes!) is usually a hassle. So, when you buy shoes, instead of walking on soft ground, try to find an uneven surface to test them. Also, walk around your house to get your feet accustomed to them. When you finally decide to wear them outdoors, choose less strenuous tasks — go for a short walk instead of a night of dancing.

You don’t need to compare, and it’s a big turn off when you’re on a first date with someone new. If you say something like, “This is exactly how he used to open the door for me,” your date will close the door and drive off. n Do not use your phone as soon as

you’re in the car It’s an unspoken rule that you shouldn’t use your phone when you’re at the dinner table. But, checking your messages the minute you get into his car isn’t a good idea either. Remember that if he’s dropping you home, your date doesn’t end at the dinner table. The car ride home is an extension of it. If your best friend wants to know how your date went, she will just have to wait a little longer.

n Try not to throw up! It’s a terrible

n Don’t be offensive You’ve kept

yourself sane and behaved admirably. Keep it up! Don’t make inappropriate jokes or talk about things that may offend your date, just because dinner is done. You may have had a long conversation or a fun chat, but that doesn’t mean that he knows you well enough to understand your questionable humour. So, play it cool and avoid commenting about anything radical. n Lock in a second date before

saying goodbye Want to avoid the whole “Should I text or should I wait?” debate? Then fix a second date before you bid him farewell. A subtle approach such as, “I had a fun tonight. I think we should do this again,” can get the ball rolling. Obviously, only do this if you did have fun and like your date. Had a great date after a really long time? That’s fantastic! But, don’t start picturing a perfect destination wedding. Keep your cool and go with the flow. Don’t get anxious and ruin your chance of scoring a second date.

n Control your feelings Don’t make it

n Be clear If you didn’t like your date,

too evident that you like him. Of course, subtle flirting is great! But, don’t make your strong feelings for him too obvious at the end of the night; that counts as coming on too

it’s okay, but don’t end the night by saying you’ll call or message. This will only get his hopes up. Instead, politely tell him that you had a good time and leave it at that.

The last-minute recall of the plane, which had started taxiing for take-off, delayed the flight by 46 minutes. EW DELHI: There is a possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Russian city of Ufa next month, with an aim to move forward and normalise ties. There is a view that Tuesday's telephonic call by the Prime Minister to Sharif has "lowered the temperatures" between India and Pakistan which have been involved in a war of words over Modi's critical remarks about Pakistan during his Dhaka visit recently and in the wake of India's military action in Myanmar. However, no official request for a meeting has been initiated from ei- PM Narendra Modi with his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif.

ther side so far. Modi had called up Sharif and extended best wishes on the occasion of Ramzan while noting that there was a need for having 'peaceful' and 'friendly' bilateral ties between the two countries. In his telephonic conversation, Modi had also conveyed to Sharif India's decision to release detained Pakistani fishermen on the 'pious' occasion of Ramzan. The annual SCO summit will be held in Ufa from July 9-10 and both India and Pakistan are likely to be granted full membership of the China-backed grouping. India had formally applied for membership of SCO in its summit meeting in Dushanbe last year, saying it was ready to step up engagement with the grouping.

‘Op DOGA’ launched to secure Yoga Day event N

EW DELHI: Security agencies have launched a special operation, codenamed 'DOGA' -- combining the words 'dog' and 'yoga', by deploying trained canine squads to sanitise and ensure fool-proof security at the venue of the International Yoga Day event on Rajpath here on Sunday, June 21. Official sources said the operation is being spearheaded by the elite canine squad of paramilitary force ITBP, reports PTI. As the venue around India GateRajpath in the heart of the national capital is expected to draw close to 40,000 people including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Cabinet colleagues and others this Sunday, its peripheries and core areas have been handed over for security checks to these four-legged soldiers. Indo-Tibetan Border Police, nominated as the national 'centre for excellence' for sniffer and police dogs training, has put on job a special breed of Belgian Shepherd, 'Malinois' who had gained prominence across the world after they were re-

ported to have participated in the strike of US Navy SEAL that killed Al Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. "Apart from the 'Malinois' breed, about a dozen German Shepherd and Labrador dogs have been deployed for sniffing and anti-sabotage tasks round-the-clock on Rajpath and surrounding areas. They are working in regular shifts along with their handlers... They will keep doing their job till the event ends on June 21," a senior official privy to 'Op DOGA' said. The official said sniffer dog units of other security agencies like Delhi Police have also been roped in. ITBP's canine squad had been deployed during the swearing-in ceremony of the Modi Cabinet on the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt last year and the visit of US President Barack Obama to India in January this year. Considering the importance of the event on June 21, the official said, the need was felt to deploy highly-skilled 'Malinois' for the task. Pics: PTI

‘Housing for All’, interest relief for urban poor

N

EW DELHI: Government on Wednesday launched its 'Housing for All by 2022' mission and approved a substantial increase in interest relief on loan for the urban poor to promote affordable homes. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the recommendations of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to increase interest subvention to 6.50 per cent on housing loans to beneficiaries belonging to economic weaker section (EWS) including slum- dwellers and low income groups (LIGs). The Cabinet's decision benefits urban poor by an amount of Rs 2.30 lakh each and as a result this the monthly EMI would come down to Rs 2,852 per month. According to a senior Housing and Urban Poverty Department Alleviation official, at present, with the interest rate of 10.50 per cent, current EMI on admissible loan component of Rs 6 lakh, over 15year loan duration works out to be Rs 6,632 per month. With Cabinet deciding on creditlinked subsidy to 6.50 per cent, EMI comes down to Rs 4,050 per month,

benefiting the urban poor by Rs 2,582 per month, he said. On the whole, central assistance in the range of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.30 lakh per beneficiary would be provided under different components of the National Urban Housing Mission in urban areas to build 2 crore new houses to meet the housing shortage, over the next 7 years. As per the earlier approval of the Union Cabinet, there are four components to the National Urban Housing Mission. Under the redevelopment plan of slums with the participation of private developers using land as a resource component, a central grant of Rs 1 lakh on an average per beneficiary would be provided. States/Union Territories are at liberty to use this grant for any slum redevelopment schemes to be taken up to make such projects viable, if required. In the second caetgory, affordable housing through credit- linked subsidy scheme, an interest subsidy of 6.50 per cent on each housing loan to EWS and LIG beneficiaries would be provided by the central government.

earing up to roll out GST from April 1, 2016, the Finance Ministry yesterday set up two committees to suggest tax rates and look into IT preparedness for the new indirect tax regime. The committee formed under the Finance Ministry's Chief Economic Advisor would "recommend possible tax rates under GST that would be consistent with the present level of revenue collection of Centre and states," a statement said. While making recommendations, it would take into account expected levels of growth of economy, different levels of compliance and broadening of tax base under Goods and Services Tax (GST), Finance Ministry in a statement said. "The Committee would also analyse the sector-wise and state-wise impact of GST on the economy. The Committee is expected to give its report within two months," it said. The statement added, that the

Steering Committee has been formed under the Co-Chairmanship of Additional Secretary of Revenue Department and Member Secretary of Empowered Committee (EC) of State Finance Ministers. The panel has members from Revenue Department, Central Board of Excise and Customs, Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) and representatives of state governments. It would monitor the progress of IT preparedness of GSTN/CBEC/ Tax authorities, finalisation of reports of all the sub-committees on different aspects relating to the mechanics of GST and drafting of CGST, IGST and SGST laws/rules. and dealing with the consequences of India's levels of violence was estimated to cost the national economy USD 341.7 billion in 2014. This is equivalent to 4.7% of India's GDP, or USD 273 per person". Meanwhile, South Asia moved up one notch in the regional ranking after staying at the bottom in 2014, but that's mostly because conditions worsened at a faster pace in MENA (the Middle East and North Africa). Overall, scores of most countries in South Asia slipped, with only Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh registering gains. India ranked 5th out of seven countries in South Asia. Moreover, in the past eight years since GPI was first introduced, India deteriorated by 6% largely due to "deterioration in indicators measuring deaths from external conflict, political terror and perceptions of criminality". According to the report, the impact of violence on the global economy reached a whopping USD 14.3 trillion, or 13.4% of global GDP, in 2014. Globally, many European countries are in the midst of historic levels of peace, with homicide rates falling, military budgets decreasing and withdrawal of forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. The year 2014 was marked by two contradictory trends: on the one hand, many countries in the OECD achieved historic levels of peace while on the other, strifetorn nations, especially in the Middle East, became more violent," said IEP Founder and Executive Chairman Steve Killelea.

progress is underway to finalise various aspects of GST design like business processes and payment systems and also making of model GST, SGST and IGST laws and rules. "This task is being undertaken through various Sub-Committees formed by the Empowered Committee which has officers from Government of India as well as State Governments as Members," it added. Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) is taking steps for preparing the IT infrastructure for roll out of GST, it said and added the IT infrastructure would enable online registration, filing of returns and getting refunds. Various State Governments are also preparing the necessary back-end IT infrastructure for implementation of GST which would relate to aspects like assessments and audit. The Constitutional Amendment Bill for rolling out of GST has been referred to a Rajya Sabha Select Committee. The Lok Sabha has already cleared the Bill.

God and worship is a personal choice and open to interpretation. ‘Krishan Kanhaiya’ is a witty take on this belief through the eyes of the protagonist, Kanhaiya Lal. Produced by Garima Productions, 'Krishan Kanhaiya' is a distinct yet light hearted show portraying the ever confused and infuriated life of an atheist canteen manager, Kanhaiyalal. His persistent questions to Lord Krishna prompts the divine being himself to enter his life in various forms to solve Kanhaiyalal’s struggles and answer his questions attempting to bring peace in his life. Siddharth Arora, who plays Krishna, will be seen at the receiving end of incessant questions for God, his existence and his ways by me, Kanhaiyalal. Kanhaiyalal firmly believes that he is a self-made man and God has nothing to do with him or his accomplishments. Whenever in doubt, nothing stops him in disputing the reality of God by dragging him to explain situations every now and then. The ever obliging God that Krishna is, always appears out of nowhere to resolve

THOR 2: THE DARK WORLD THOUSANDS of years ago, a race of beings known as Dark Elves tried to send the universe into darkness by using a weapon known as the Aether. Warriors from Asgard stop them but their leader Malekith escapes to wait for another opportunity. The warriors find the Aether and since it cannot be destroyed, they try to hide it. In the present day, Jane Foster awaits the return of Thor although it has been two years since they last saw once another. In the meantime, Thor

his queries immediately by adding a funny twist and thereby teaching him a new lesson every day.

How will Lord Krishna appear on the show? Seen as a young modern guy, Krishna will be seen donning different traits. There will be wickedness, romance, love and more. Each episode will see Krishna educating viewers and leaving them with beautiful life lessons and messages.

What made you accept this show? I identify myself with the middle class character of Kanhaiya and like him I too have a lot of unanswered questions for God, especially when I read the newspapers and the tragedies that happen in the world which make you wonder about the existence of God.

IN 1999, the Janjira nuclear plant was mysteriously destroyed with most hands lost including supervisor Joe Brody’s colleague and wife, Sandra. In doing so, father and son discover the disaster’s secret cause on the wreck’s very grounds. This enables them to witness the reawakening of a terrible threat to all of Humanity, which is made all the worse with a second secret revival elsewhere. Against this cataclysm, the only hope for the world may be Godzilla, but the challenge for the King of the Monsters will be great even as Humanity struggles to understand the destructive ally they have. You are known more as a Marathi actor than Hindi , so was it difficult for you to act in a Hindi show? Not at all. You would be surprised to know that I have worked more than Marathi, in Hindi shows and films whereas in Marathi I am just doing a play – ‘Tom and Jerry’ – written by me and playing the lead role.

You were a part of 'OMG'? So would be a part of its sequel too? No. I don’t think so. Nikhil signs off with a pleasant smile!

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

irpur: It will be a fresh beginning for a full-strength India in limited overs cricket after the World Cup semifinal exit as they face a buoyant Bangladesh, who have more to gain then their famed neighbours, in the threematch ODI series starting here tomorrow. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back at the helm, along with six other ODI specialists to take on a side that made the cricket world sit up and take notice by reaching the 2015 World Cup quarterfinals, where they were knocked out by an in-form Indian side. The series is a platform for the hosts to exact revenge for the World Cup defeat, which had turned ugly after the then ICC President Mustafa Kamal of Bangladesh accused the umpires of favouring India. As far as the Indian team is concerned, even a 3-0 result against the hosts will not be enough for the second-placed India’s captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni plays with a soccer ball as his teammates Virat Kohli and Shikhar side to claim the number one Dhawan watch during a practice session a day ahead of their one-day internationamatch against Bangladesh in spot in the ICC rankings, while Dhaka, Bangladesh. a favourable outcome for the home team will boost its qualmain team, India have given Teams: ifying chances for the 2017 enough indication of, in India: ODI squad: MS Dhoni (captain), Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Champions Trophy. CPL says KKR owners intend to buy T&T franchise

P

ort-of-Spain: The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) announced that the owners of Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) intend to acquire the Trinidad & Tobago franchise, subject to all the "regulatory and board approvals". KKR were the IPL champions in 2012 and 2014 and ranked by Forbes earlier this year to have the highest brand value in the IPL. Shah Rukh Khan, owner of KKR, said, "This is in line with our vision to expand globally and we are thrilled to become part of the great cricketing tradition of Trinidad & To-

bago. The passion for franchise cricket in the Caribbean is evident with the success of CPL and we hope to bring all the best practices of KKR to the T&T franchise." Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR, said, "We have been fortunate to be recognised as one of the most professionally managed franchises in IPL. Our positive experience in building a successful franchise has encouraged us to expand globally. The success of CPL and the Trinidad & Tobago franchise in particular, makes it a very good fit for us." SRK joins Hollywood stars Mark Wahlberg (Barbados Tridents) and Gerard Butler (Jamaica Tallawahs) as the latest high-profile CPL franchise-owner. Khan also has a fanatical following in Trinidad & Tobago, and their fans will be flocking to the Queen's Park Oval to watch their side play in their home games from July 14th to 19th.

India claim two team medals on day one

New Delhi: India's junior girls and cadet boys claimed team championship medals, winning all their round-robin matches on the inaugural day of the South Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium. The Indian junior boys with three wins and cadet girls with two victories are on course to annexing the gold medals having taken the top position in the league chart. However, the boys and the girls have two more matches tomorrow before completing the formalities. In the cadet boys, the Indians notched up two 3-0 wins against both Sri Lanka and Nepal while the hosts got a walkover from Pakistan, who failed to pit a cadet team. Sri Lanka, who posted a 3-0 triumph over Nepal finished second behind India to grab the silver medal, with a walkover from Pakistan. It was a cakewalk for the Indians with Manav Thakkar, Parth Virmani and Manush Shah making it a one-sided affair against both their opponents.

players were rested for a three-ODI tour and seven of them are part of this one. The seven players - Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar - were seen in the nets at the academy ground of the Shere Bangla National Stadium ahead of the first game. Asked if the series holds significance, Raina said, "Yes definitely. You saw that after the IPL, the full Test team came and now the full ODI team has come. "Bangladesh have done well in ODIs recently, and this shows how important a series this is for us. We have done well in ODIs recently, and we are looking forward to it." The Uttar Pradesh lefthander will be one of the mainstays of Indian batting's middle-order alongside his captain Dhoni and Kohli. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma automatically fill in the openers' slot with the consistent Ajinkya Rahane beefing up the top-order. The all-rounder's slot could go to Ravindra Jadeja while Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashwin and Mohit Sharma are expected to form the bowling attack. The team management might also explore the options of trying out Stuart Binny or Dhawal Kulkarni in at least one of the games.

BCCI’s stand on DRS remains same but open to talks: Dalmiya K

olkata: Just a couple of days after India's Test captain Virat Kohli gave positive signals about the use of Decision Review System (DRS), the BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya clarified that board's "stand remains same" but the Cricket Advisory Committee might take a call in future. However, there was a slight contrast from his predecessor N Srinivasan's stand as Dalmiya stated that the BCCI is "open to discussions" and might use a modified version during a future bilateral series. "It is clarified that the stand taken on the Decision Review System (DRS) by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains the same as on date. But that does not mean we would not be open to discussions internally on whether the DRS could be used partially or in its modified version during bilateral series," Dalmiya was quoted as saying in a press release.

Just after India's one-off Test match against Bangladesh ended, Kohli was asked about DRS and he said, "You have to sit and analyse and ask the bowlers what they feel about it. Ask the batters what they feel about that. We literally just came into this Test match with very less time on hand. So now that we have time, I am sure these discussions will take place." However, Dalmiya in his statement, echoed the sentiments of ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has always maintained that DRS in its current form is not "foolproof".

Mortaza upbeat about team’s chances of beating India

Mirpur: Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza says they are going into the three-match series opener with the belief that they have the wherewithal to beat India in today's game. Mortaza said his side has gone from strength-tostrength in the last few years and that gives them the confidence of playing hard against much fancied rival like India. "I firmly believe India are favourites but when we get on the field, we don't think who is favorite or who is not. I hope we can play our best cricket. After the 2007 World Cup, we started to believe that we can beat any team," Mortaza said on the eve of the series-opener. "We never lost our mental strength despite losing matches. Of course, if we are playing against a higher-ranked team they will be the favourites but we don't think that we can't beat them," Mortaza added. The Bangladesh captain said the recent-past records are encouraging for them and all they need is to fire in unison. "Bangladesh is one of the teams doing well in ODIs right now apart from Australia, England, India and New Zealand. I have told the boys to look at the statistics that we are not far behind any of these teams. "Everyone believes in themselves. We have to show it on the field, but this is no pressure. One or two could have a bad time but if many of us are in form, we can have a good time," he said. The skipper wants his players to adopt the onematch-at-one-time approach. "We should take it match by match which is more important for us. We have to do well and then think about the next game and so forth. We have to learn how to deal with such pressure too.”

Hoping to witness a resurgence in kho-kho: Patankar

By Gaurav Dudhane

M

umbai: Once played in the hear tlands of Maharashtra, the traditional Indian sport of kho-kho is witnessing a slow death. Highly popular in the state, the game has taken a backseat due to the lack in overall development and popularity. What has added to the decline is the professional approach given to other sports like kabaddi which has found many takers across the country and enabled many players to earn big money with the Pro-Kabbadi League and the World Kabaddi League. Prashant Patankar, secretary, Mumbai Upnagar KhoKho Sanghatana said he tried his part to get the sport back on track but mentions that the process has been uterly slow. Patankar has donned many hats in kho-kho for the past 36 years - from being a coach to a referee and also an administrator, he tried to take the sport back to higher pedestal. However, he feels the demanding physical nature of the sport and the lack of money spent on it has been taking people away from it. “Money provided in Kho-kho is very low compared to other games despite the game demanding more physical activity. Also former

committees failed to uplift the sport,” said Patankar. The multi-tasker added that while Maharashtra has been a magnet to scout khokho talent, the sport has been unable to spread its wings across the country. Despite organising tournaments, most of the players are only based from Maharashtra and that he says is something to worry and ponder over. In order to spread the sport, a new league is in the pipeline which on the lines of the Pro-Kabbadi League. “In 2013-14, Kho-kho Premier League was hosted in Dadar but it had only players of Maharashtra. Their has been also calls for developing khokho on the lines of Pro-Kabbadi League. Dr. Chandrajit Jadhav, general secretary, Maharashtra Kho-kho Association has been desperately trying to do so and his efforts will succeed in next year,” said Patankar. The Maharashtra administrator added that in order to promote the sport in the state and garner interest among the people, the sport needs to route itself back to the rural areas which have always been a backbone for this sport. “Kho-kho should grow in the rural areas of Maharashtra. Coaching camps should be carried on for coaches and tournaments should have cash prizes for the players. Kho-kho should be developed at the school level and every district should have inter-school competitions.”

a Serena (Chile): Sergio Aguero reignited Argentina's Copa America challenge here, scoring the only goal as the favourites defeated historic rivals Uruguay 1-0 in a hard-fought first round clash. English Premier League star Aguero headed home a cross from Manchester City team-mate Pablo Zabaleta in the 56th minute to settle a gritty encounter that leaves the Argentines on pole to win Group B. Uruguay's defeat means the 2011 champions must now beat Paraguay in their final group game to be certain of clinching a place in the last eight, although they could still reach the knockout rounds as one of the best third placed teams. Yesterday's match between the 1930 World Cup finalists was the 199th encounter between the two South American rivals. A tense first half had seen Argentina, surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw by Paraguay in their opening game, dominate possession and territory but fail to break down a resolute Uruguayan defence. The two best chances of the opening period both fell to Argentina, with Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria testing Fernando Muslera in the ninth minute with an angled shot that the Uruguayan

Muslera was pressed into action again midway through the half, producing a superb one-handed save to deny Aguero after the striker met Lionel Messi's sublime cross with a downward header. Tensions began to rise thereafter, with Argentina coach Gerardo Martino shown a red card by Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci in the 38th minute. On the stroke of half-time

Chennaiyin FC retain Elano as marquee player C

hennai: Chennaiyin FC have retained Brazilian World Cupper Elano Blumer as their marquee player for the second season of the Hero Indian Super League football which begins on October 3. Elano, who turned 34 on Sunday, will be joining Chennaiyin FC on loan from Brazilian club Santos to feature in the 2015 Hero ISL. The playmaker made an explosive start in the inaugural ISL last year, scoring eight goals in his first six games, and eventually won the Golden Boot. Elano's trademark freekicks and individual brilliance were among the best highlights of the 2014 ISL. The former Manchester City player has already tasted success this calendar year with Santos, securing the Sao Paolo state championship, and is a key member of their squad in the ongoing Brazilian Serie A. "We are delighted to have

retained Elano for the second season of the Hero Indian Super League. He was outstanding in the first ISL and his class and superior technical quality will definitely give us an edge this season also. We are working very hard to build a strong squad and retaining Elano as our marquee player is a big step in that direction," said Chennaiyin FC manager Marco Materazzi.

tempers flared once more with Argentina enforcer Javier Mascherano booked for sliding through Uruguay playmaker Nicolas Lodeiro, who had earlier seen yellow for a wild challenge on Zabaleta. Uruguay carved out their best effort in the opening minutes of the second half, Maxi Pereira uncorking a fierce shot that Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero did well to clear. With Messi being shadowed at every turn, it fell to

others to break the deadlock and the game-changing moment came courtesy of Javier Pastore on 56 minutes. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder showed sublime skill to release Zabaleta down the right, and the full-back took one touch before whipping in a cross to the near-post, met by Aguero to head home. Uruguay, who entered the tournament without Luis Suarez who is still suspended for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup last

year, were largely devoid of inspiration in attack with striker Edinson Cavani anonymous. But the holders were left ruing a glorious chance to equalise against the run of play in the 75th minute. Alvaro Perreira bludgeoned a shot goalwards that Romero was unable to control. The rebound fell invitingly for Diego Rolan but with the goal at his mercy from six yards out, the Bordeaux striker blazed over the bar.

Swiss prosecutors probe 53 ‘suspicious’ FIFA cases B

ern: Swiss prosecutors are investigating 53 cases of possible money laundering as they look into FIFA's handling of bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, officials said on Wednesday. Attorney general Michael Lauber said the "suspicious" cases had been reported by banks and that a "huge and complex" inquiry into football's world body could take months if not years. Officials said the 53 are individuals and companies and that each case could involve many more transactions. "We note positively that banks in Switzerland did fulfil their duties to file suspicious activity reports," he told a press conference. "Partly in addition to the 104 banking relations already known to the authorities, banks announced 53 suspicious banking relations via the Anti-MoneyLaundering-Framework of Switzerland," he added. Swiss authorities have set up a special task force to look into the World Cup bids -which went to Russia for 2018

and Qatar in 2022. It is one of two major fraud investigations that have rocked FIFA. US authorities last month charged 14 people in a separate bribery investigation. Lauber said he "does not exclude" questioning FIFA boss Joseph Blatter or general secretary Jerome Valcke, although neither is currently under suspicion.

PROBE WILL TAKE TIME He said nine terrabytes of data had been seized, including at FIFA's Zurich headquarters and the probe would take time. "The world of football needs to be patient... By its nature, this investigation will take more than the legendary '90 minutes'," that a football match takes, said Lauber, who has just been re-elected for a four-year mandate. Lauber said he did not feel under pressure with the next World Cup in Russia just three years away. "I don't care about the timetable of FIFA, I care about my timetable," he said in response to a question.

Senior FIFA official Domenico Scala has said there could be a revote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups if there was evidence of wrongdoing in the bidding process. FIFA, never far from controversy, is facing its biggest crisis because of the two corruption inquiries. Four days after being elected to a fifth term on May 30, Blatter announced that he would resign. US authorities have charged 14 people from North and South America accused of involvement in more than $150 million of bribes for football deals. Seven FIFA officials were detained at a luxury Zurich hotel as part the inquiry on May 27. They are now fighting extradition to the United States. On Thursday, the European parliament called on Blatter to quit immediately and allow for an interim leader to launch reforms in the organisation. But FIFA has repeated that the 79-year-old Swiss will continue in office until a successor is designated, probably by the end of the year.

31 Five-star Brazil face U-20 final with Serbia

Wellington: Five-time champions Brazil trounced Senegal 5-0 today to set up a FIFA Under-20 World Cup final against Serbia, who edged past Mali 2-1 with a late winner. Brazil outclassed Mali to reach the decider of the tournament in Auckland on Saturday, giving them the chance to equal archrival Argentina's record of six youth trophies. Serbia have not reached the final since 1987, when they played under the name Yugoslavia, and had to battle past Mali team in a fast-paced match. It was an emphatic return to form for Brazil, whose coach Rogerio Micale admitted they were lucky to stay in the tournament after advancing on penalties following 0-0 draws in their previous two matches. Micale said the performance against a well-drilled Senegal was a huge confidence boost for his players going into the final. "Our team has reinvented themselves in this match," he said. "Both our defence and offence have been amazing." The Samba Kings turned on the style with four first-half goals, then cruised home against a 10-man Senegal with Marcos Guilherme scoring his second of the match 12 minutes from time. While delighted to rediscover their attacking prowess, Brazil have also not conceded a goal in four matches and will go into Saturday's final as heavy favourites to take the title. They took just four minutes to impose themselves against Senegal, when defender Andelinou Correa scored an unlucky own goal trying to flick Joao Pedro's cross clear with his heel. Brazil doubled their advantage three minutes later when Gabriel Jesus made a run from the halfway line then fed the ball through for Guilherme's point-blank shot. Boschilia made it three on 19 minutes, pouncing for a simple tap-in when goalkeeper Ibrahima Sy failed to control Juan Carlos' goalmouth cross. Senegal's woes continued when Jorge waltzed through their defence for a fourth, then their defender Eli Cisse was sent off just before the break.

32 Henderson wants to lead Liverpool

London: Jordan Henderson has stated his desire to become Liverpool’s new captain, insisting he wants to “take more responsibility” at the club. Henderson has long been touted as the man who will take the armband on a longterm basis from Steven Gerrard having been vicecaptain last season and established himself as a key member of Liverpool’s midfield. However, Brendan Rodgers has yet to confirm who his new captain will be, with suggestions circulating that the manager may hand the role to James Milnerhaving signed the 29year-old from Manchester City. But Henderson has made clear he wants to follow in the footsteps of Gerrard following his departure to Major League Soccer from Anfield. “I’ve always wanted to take more responsibility, especially at the stage of my career I’m at,” the 25-yearold told Goal.com. “I feel I’m getting a bit older now, a bit more mature and of course I want to take more responsibility for the team but, at the same time, I think it’s up to all of us as a team to take more responsibility on the pitch and make sure we put in good performances. “When I’ve been vicecaptain I’ve just tried to do my best for the team as I always have and to learn as much as I can from Stevie, like I have from when I first came to the club. But we’ve got a lot of captains and a lot of leaders in the dressing room so I’m sure whoever he [Rodgers] picks, the lads will be right behind him.

A £40M BID FOR STERLING

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

L

L

ondon: Liverpool are set to reject a £40m bid from Manchester City for Raheem Sterling. The Reds turned down an initial bid of £30m for the England international last week, but City have now returned with a second approach. The new deal is understood to consist of an initial £35m, with a further £5m due in add-ons. Liverpool, though, still value Sterling at £50m, and will resist City’s latest offer. City are one of a number of clubs keen to tempt the 20-year-old away from Anfield, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all keen on signing him. Liverpool remain determined that they will not be forced into selling one of their

prized assets, despite the fact Sterling and his camp have indicated that he will not sign a new contract with the club. His current deal still has two-years remaining, though his representative, Aidy Ward, stated last month that he would not sign a new one for “even £900,000 a week.” That prompted Liverpool to cancel a planned meeting with the player, who has made 129 appearances for the Reds since breaking into the team as a 17-year-old. At present, Sterling earns around £35,000 a week at Anfield, and the club have offered to almost treble that. though, are unlikely to entertain such an offer. They are, at present, refusing to be budged on their £50m valuation of the player. Sources close to City have suggested that this will be a final offer, but Liverpool are well prepared for a protracted saga, which is set to drag on over the summer.

ondon: Michelin have made a bid to supply tyres to Formula One from 2017, providing the sport agrees to them being bigger and longer-lasting. The French tyre maker announced on its Twitter feed that it had entered a tender, launched by the governing body, before a Wednesday deadline. Current supplier Pirelli are considered the favoured candidates, with some senior figures in the sport opposed to a switch to 18-inch wheels from the current 13-inch ones. "Whether we'll be selected or not, we'll see," Michelin motorsport head Pascal Couasnon told motorsport.com. "But I'd say we want to be coherent with our proposals and offer the opportunity to the teams and the drivers to have a tyre that enables everyone to express themselves and drive to the max."

Drivers regularly complain that the current rules force them to look after fast-deteriorating tyres and ease off the throttle to save fuel. Michelin withdrew from Formula One in 2006, a year after a farcical U.S. Grand Prix that went ahead with only six cars after all the Michelin-equipped teams withdrew on safety grounds. Formula One has had a sole supplier since then, with Bridgestone replaced by Pirelli in 2011. Couasnon said Michelin preferred competition but the technological challenge could come from the rules themselves. "When you are not allowed to change tyres and refuel at the same time at Le Mans, the teams need tyres that can handle several stints," he said. "So even without rivals, you're being challenged in a technical way by your clients. That's what we want to do in F1.
