Kiran Bedi to be declared official Delhi CM candidate BJP has ‘world’s most beautiful face’, Bedi on Modi in retort to AAP PTI
N
EW DELHI: Days after joining BJP, Kiran Bedi on Sunday said that in Prime Minister Narendra Modi the party has with it the "world's most beautiful face" as she rebutted AAP's claim that she was brought in by the saffron outfit because it does not have a face of its own in Delhi. "BJP has got the world's most beautiful face with it, i.e. Narendra Modi and his leadership. After that we are just stars who are revolving around him," the former Team Anna member said as she shot down AAP's charge that she was inducted into BJP for being its face here for Delhi polls. "Delhi will get all its resources from the central government and it is the Centre which will give us energy," Bedi told PTI. AAP has attacked BJP over the induction of former IPS officer Bedi, saying that it has been done to shield Prime Minister Modi in the event of
BJP President Amit Shah being greeted by party leader Kiran Bedi as Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyaya looks on, in New Delhi on Sunday. the party's defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections. Bedi, who will contest the Delhi Assembly polls on Feb-
ruary 7, will be declared official Delhi CM candiddate. She had on Saturday rejected Congress's charge that she
had used Anna Hazare to fulfil her political ambitions, saying that joining the anticorruption crusader was the "right thing to do" during the Lokpal agitation. Congress leader Ajay Maken has alleged that Bedi and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal were "opportunists of the first order". Maken, who is the Congress's campaign chief for Delhi polls, had alleged that both Kejriwal and Bedi had furthered their political ambitions behind Hazare's back. Bedi, 65, entered the BJP fold in the presence of its chief Amit Shah and Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Harsh Vardhan at the party's headquarters here on January 15. Kejriwal and Bedi were part of Hazare's core team as he led a massive agitation to press for the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament. The two had parted ways in 2012 after Kejriwal's decision to float the Aam Aadmi Party.

The untouchable millionaire HEARD of Hari Pippal, a member of the untouchable caste who captured the hearts of the public? He was born into a dalit family where he struggled through menial jobs before he overcame all adversities to become a self-made millionaire. Pippal’s success is all the more extraordinary because of the limitations imposed by the caste system. Folks who prescribed to this system also did not believe in social mobility of classes and it is for this reason that Pippal’s story stands out. Pippal’s early life is a testimony to the hardship suffered by members of this caste. For example, during the childhood years, he recalls sleeping on the street. And, as a teenager, he drove a rickshaw driver in order to feed his family. However, hard work and perseverance paid off for this enterprising businessman. Pippal now rubs shoulders with high-caste business as the owner of a big private hospital, a shoe factory, a motorbike dealership and a restaurant. While this self-made man continues to be heralded as an
Hari Pippal
inspiration to others, he is wary of being used as a token. Pippal points out that India must make a lot more progress before the caste system (and the social stigma associated with lower levels) is eliminated. He described the various ways in which his caste has continued to affect his work life as well as his personal life. To begin with, he could not name his first startup company after
himself as it would be snubbed by higher caste members. Later on, as he became more successful, he built a hospital which was initially snubbed by doctors of different castes. These folks came flocking back once the place became renowned in the area. There was also the sad incident involving Pippal’s son and his fiancé. While the girl’s high-caste family were happy about the union, many from their community were offended by it. The engagement fell apart when these members started threatening the life of the girl’s family. Pippal supports programmes, be it educational endeavours or empowerment efforts, that will diminish this type discrimination. He believes that these ventures would l help the lower castes overcome the initial hurdle, ie the poverty issues.
Keeping it alive
THE ancient performance art of sword swallowing is a popular attraction at carnivals, traveling sideshows and apparently TED Talks. Its origins are found in India almost 4,000 years ago, and over time spread throughout the world to other cultures. The practice of swallowing multiple swords didn’t
become popular until the 19th century or so, with sword swallowers vying to be the most unique attraction. Enter one Ramesh Chandra Kasera. In September of 2006, Indore-based Kasera swallowed eleven swords at once, keeping the Indian tradition of swordswallowing alive. According to the video, he used to perform in a travelling troupe and took up the
craft when his uncle injured himself performing the same trick. Not content with just swallowing sharp blades, he decided to top off the performance with the careful placement of burning incense sticks in his mouth. Unfortunately for Kasera, larger numbers of swords have been swallowed, such as woman’s world record holder Natasha Veruschka, who swallowed 13 swords at the Third Annual Sword Swallower’s Convention on September 3, 2004.
Then there is Red Stuart who swallowed 50 swords at once at the International Sword Swallower Awareness Day on February 28, 2009. At least Kasera has the whole “eating burning embers” thing going for him.

Instability or adrift? C
hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and, more precisely, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not exactly want the media to hear about the state of the economy. At one end he argued before party men that he would take a loan of Rs 52,000 crore for his government to just fund the sops and programmes announced by the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress (NCP) government. At
term gains in ensuing Mumbai civic polls. At present the party is more interested in enrolling as many primary members that it can in a bid to create a record of sorts. Ignoring the fact that unless it delivers on the ground, no sane person would vote for the political party or politician. Sena still is wary of what the BJP might do next after it has dropped hints that it might contest the civic elec-

the other end the government dished out a largesse of Rs 50 lakh for the newly elected 288 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) as the MLA Area Development Fund, till March when the new state budget will come. To make matters worse for Fadnavis, his ministers seem to be more interested in embarrassing their own Chief Minister with their comments and actions. Until last week most of his BJP ministers were found waiting in Mantralaya, prompting him to declare that he would stay put in Mumbai for at least three days a week. On the other hand the Shiv Sena and its ministers appear to have become wise enough to realise that this stint in power should be used to do more hardwork and regain lost ground. The Sena ministers appear to be punctual in their attendance at office. The common man is still not visible in Mantralaya as the impression is that despite the acquired majority there appears to be a sense of drift in the government. On the political front as well by admitting allegedly tainted former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA Praveen Darekar, it has once again shown that it is willing to shed its inhibitions for the sake of long
tions on its own. Hence it has made its plans clear of contesting the ensuing Delhi state assembly elections. Even NCP chief Sharad Pawar has wasted no time in targetting the Fadnavis led government ridiculing it for what he felt its lack of knowledge and administrative acumen in solving the festering sugarcane crisis of late. The government has not been able to extract funds for drought relief measures in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions as yet. In a little more than a month’s time the government faces its first litmus test as it presents its first fullfledged state budget. Going by the pronouncements of Fadnavis, some of his sluggish ministers, the farmer today is badly battered by drought in some parts of the state. In other parts he is struggling to save whatever crop he has managed to grow. Add to it the misery of long power cuts, high power bills and lower remunerative prices for their products is forcing the likes of BJP ally Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty taking law into his own hands ransacking government offices. Allies and foes alike all are snipping at its heels, and the BJP and its government seems to be adrift.

he Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has issued notices to political party offices to make way for the Metro Vidhan Bhavan Station. The political parties have assured complete cooperation and MMRCL has promised further assistance in identifying alternative accommodation before the actual construction of the station begins. Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRCL, said, “It was heartening to receive such positive response from the political parties. I am sure Ashwini Bhide, MD-MMRCL.
the entire construction of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor will now be completed with the intended speed and precision.” There are 26 government offices and eight party offices near the upcoming Metro Vidhan Bhavan Station which need resettlement. The representatives of 14 government offices and six political parties attended the meeting. The MMRCL has suggested MTNL, BSNL, MbPT and World Trade Centre as alternatives to accommodate the government offices. A meeting which was attended by members of the Congress, NCP, RPI, SP, Shiv Sena and
Shetkari Kamgar Party agreed to the relocation after their visit to the suggested alternatives and examining convenience. The representatives of the parties also suggested that since the offices of the political parties are together and accessible to the comman man, it will be advisable to locate these offices near Mantralaya. They will make a proposal to this effect to the General Administration Department which in turn will facilitate a meeting with the Chief Minister to find out a solution. The offices of the political parties are expected to be relocated by May.
BMC introduces Aadhar employment scheme By Khushboo Panjabi

part from providing essential civic services, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) may also offer citizens household services in the future. The civic body has decided to provide work to unemployed people in the city under the ‘Aadhar’ scheme. According to the civic officials, the planning department of the civic body has been providing professional training to women’s self help groups, young girls and unemployed youths. Of them, women and girls are provided training under the gender budget schemes and male youths are trained under the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana. In order to provide them employment, the BMC has prepared an ‘Aadhar’ scheme, under which workers
like caretakers, plumbers, electricians, cooks etc will be registered. The BMC is also planning to start a helpline for these services. People who want to avail of these services will be provided access to these workers. “To ensure safety, the Aadhar centres will have records and testimonies of all the workers, so the services will be trustworthy,” said Prachi Jambhekar, assistant commissioner, planning. The BMC is also planning to make a portal for the registration of youths seeking to have professional training. The
The gender budget concept was initiated by the then Mayor Shubha Raul in 2009. Under the gender budget, the BMC implements women and child welfare schemes, which include basic training for skill development, self-protection and capacity building to help poor and needy urban women in self-employment. These schemes can also be availed by women, whose families are below poverty line (BPL).
portal will also have information about institutes providing such training, she added. The products made by women’s self help groups will also be branded through Aadhar centres. The civic body has already started four such centres in the Western suburbs.

What becomes of the teenage mother? PRACTICE SESSION FOR THE BIG DAY... Mumbai Police parading at the Naigaon Police ground during the rehearsal for Republic Day, on Sunday.
By Santia Dudi
T
he teenager who was impregnated by her brother-in-law will likely be sent to a shelter home in the city after latter was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Special women's judge AS Shende has asked the Versova police to submit a report describing the minor's family situation. Public Prosecutor (PP) Kalpana Hire told the ADC, “The victim tried to slit her wrist with a blade in front of the judge. She also told the court that she wants to live with the accused and doesn't want to go back to her mother's place. The judge asked the man's mother if she can keep the victim at her home. But the convict's mother said that her son was

the sole bread-winner of the family, and after his sentence their financial condition will not allow them to keep the girl.” Therefore the judge has asked the Versova police to submit a report describing the condition of both the families. Based on the report, if judge finds that the victim has nowhere to go, she will be sent to a shelter home. The victim used to live in a hostel at Versova during which time she would visit her sister and brother-in-law where she witnessed them fighting. Her brother-in-law made sexual advances towards her and impregnated her. When her pregnancy was discovered by the hostel authorities, she was expelled from the hostel. It was then that her mother realised that

The victim and the accused later ran away. They were arrested on September 13, 2013 while they were staying in the city as husband and wife. The birth certificate of the victim was produced in court which testified her age.

A
fter remaining elusive for more than five months, a conman who posed as a builder and duped several home seekers in the region finally landed in the custody of the Kashimira police late on Saturday night. Identified as Jasbir Singh, the accused had floated fly-by-night construction companies with the sole intention of cheating gullible homeseekers and local investors. Posing as a builder with various upcoming housing projects in the region, Singh allegedly lured people by offering affordable flats and residen-
tial land at upcoming housing destinations in and around the district. Jasbir who even placed advertisements in local newspapers, accepted booking amounts and part payments towards never-to-be completed construction projects. Following a series of complaints, the Kashimira police had registered a FIR against Singh under section 420 of the IPC last year. However, since then, he had managed to remain elusive. Acting on a tip-off a police team led by PI (Crime) Rajendra Kamble nabbed Singh from Mira Road late on Saturday night. Investigations revealed that the
MIDC (Mumbai) police has also registered a similar offence against Singh. “The magnitude of the fraud seems to be much higher. So far five people who collectively lost Rs 21 lakh have registered their complaints against Singh. He has been arrested and remanded to four days in police custody,” said senior police inspector Anil Kadam who appealed to other victims to come forward and register their complaints with the Kashimira police. Investigations were also on to ascertain the complicity of Singh’s office staffers in the case, police said.

54% turn out to vote in MBMC bye-polls By Suresh Golani
B
ye-election to ward number 18 (B) in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, which was held on Sunday, registered a 53.57 per cent voter turnout. About 5,515 out of the total 10,275 voters exercised their franchise in the election process which started off at a slow pace but picked-up later in the day. Apart from a technical glitch in one of the EVMs, the election passed off smoothly. No untoward incidents were reported. The bye-polls were necessitated following the resignation of sitting corporator Adv Ravi Vyas who deserted the NCP and jumped into the BJP bandwagon. With Vyas trying to retain his seat on a BJP ticket, a triangular contest between him, NCP’s Charudutt Aitode and Milan Mhatre (Janta Dal– S) is on the anvil. Also in the race is BVA candidate Hirendra Shah. Counting of votes will be held on Monday.

M
aharashtra government has set up a high powered ministerial panel headed by Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar to study recommendations of the Vijay Kelkar Committee on methods to eradicate development backlog and ensure equitable distribution of funds. tions of the Kelkar Committee and observations of the departments' concerned about it before submitting its report to government, reports PTI. A Trip to McDonald’s
EW DELHI: The iconic high courts of Bombay and Madras may soon undergo a change in their nomenclature. Amid demands, the Centre is mulling changing the names of the two high courts through an Act of Parliament, reports PTI. The Law Ministry has started working on a bill to rename Bombay and Madras high courts to correspond to the present names of the cities. There have been demands to rename the high courts as Mumbai High Court and Chennai High Court after the metros were rechristened in the 1990s. The proposal of the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry is to bring a bill to rename the two high courts established in the 1860s under the Indian High Court Act, 1861. The 'Indian High Court Act' of 1861, vested in the Queen of England to issue letters patent to establish high courts of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. The Bombay High Court was inaugurated on August 14, 1862. The high court today has three benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad and Goa. Bombay HC is one of a few institutions in Maharashtra that continue to carry the old name of the city.
The state government renamed Bombay as Mumbai in 1995 and all institutions under it altered names accordingly. The Madras High Court, which came into being around the same time, as one bench in Madurai. Besides demands from the Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu governments, various organisations too have been pressing for renaming the two high courts. There have also been demands to rename the Calcutta High Court as Kolkata High Court. The Calcutta High Court has the distinction of being the first high court and one of the three chartered high courts to be set up in India, along with the high courts of Bombay, Madras. It was formally opened on July 1, 1862.

he Government of Maharashtra has decided to pay Rs 8 lakh as compensation to the kin of those killed by wild animals. According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued on Friday, Rs.1 lakh will be given as immediate compensation while the remaining amount will be kept as fixed deposit in the name of the immediate kin, in a nationalised bank, reports PTI. Similarly, victims with minor injuries will be given medical treat-
ment free of cost. "The treatment should be at a government hospital or district hospital," the GR said. In case treatment at a private hospital is necessary, the compensation amount will be Rs 15,000 per person, it said. Wild animals are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The compensation provided to victims of animal attack has been regularly revised but the amount was not adequate and a proposal of hike was pending, the GR said.

Sawant supports renaming of Tilak memorial By A Special Correspondent
S
hiv Sena Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai South Arvind Sawant has extended his support to the Lokmanya Swarajya Bhoomi Smarak Samiti demand for naming the Lokmanya Tilak memorial premises at Girgaum Chowpatty as 'Swarajya Bhoomi'. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday, he stated that the memorial is open only on Tilak's birth and death anniversaries. Only on those days are floral tributes offered to the freedom fighter who first gave expression to India's freedom struggle. He added that in order to make the younger
generation aware of our freedom struggle and nationalist pride, the memorial premise should be named Swarajya Bhoomi. In a statement, Samiti founder president Prakash Silam disclosed that the Samiti has been making the demand since 2011. He further stated that for the last 68 years since Independence the great freedom fighter has been neglected and no reference to his contribution to our freedom struggle has been made deliberately to diminish his importance. Silam pointed out that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already passed a resolution calling for naming the premise as Swarajya Bhoomi. He further stated that year 2020 happens to be the 100th year of birth anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak. Silam added that the Samiti plans to unveil a huge mural on that occasion.
Modi is seen with the newlywed couple. "Thank you @narendramodi sir for keeping your promise to me! You made our day truly even more special," Sonakshi posted.
Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also attended the wedding ceremony along with Shatrughan's close friends and family members.

aharashtra government has removed the state's Minorities Commission Chairman Munaf Hakim midway through his tenure, days after he announced plans for conducting a survey to ascertain the number of Muslims in jails. Hakim, who belongs to Sharad Pawar's NCP, said no reason was cited by the government for his removal. "They (government) don't want any interference. My tenure was for five years and I had completed half of it. I was given neither a show cause notice nor a chance to explain my stance (on the jail survey)," Hakim, who was appointed to the post in Au-

Hakim said his successor Aamir Saheb assumed charge at 10 pm on Thursday. "What was the tearing hurry to take charge at night," he wondered. Threat to schools increasing? T
he latest target for terrorists is schools: a warning by the army chief says that terrorists may target schools. The horror perpetrated in a Peshwar school must have shown terrorists that the kids could be an easy target. And killing kids would result in nationwide distress: that is what the terrorists want. A few schools in the cities have carried out some safety drills. It is good that school managements have now become aware of the need for ensuring safety. What is necessary however is a continuing watch. Schools meant for the rich class must take extra care. There is also another kind of terror which holds out a threat. Children who go to these schools face a big danger: Rape by teachers and the members of the staff. In Bangalore, as many as three schools have reported such cases. The ghastly incidents have caused a lot of worry to parents. What is to be noted is cases of molestation — not rape — could be happening in many schools. Not much danger is done, but even so the children go through a silent traumatic experience. The children do not tell their parents and the culprit goes scotfree. These are some of the dangers schools are facing today. They too require silent investigation — a major part of which has to be done by the school itself.

RVIND KEJRIWAL will now have to compete for media space with Kiran Bedi. The undisputed AAP boss and the wannabe BJP boss can soon be seen slugging it out on everything under the sky, including, hopefully, how to make the capital city of India a better place for its teeming millions. But make no mistake about it. There is more that is common between the two than what might separate them. In fact, what divides them can be spelt out in just two words: clashing ambitions. Both believe they are cut out for bigger things. And that belief has often led them to defy good sense and propriety. Let us begin with commonalities. Both were in government service, she the first woman Indian Police Service officer, he a mid-level member of the Indian Revenue Service. Both started and ran NGOs while still in service. And both boast of Magsaysay awards. She made much of the fact of her being the first woman IPS officer, hogging media limelight to acquire a high public profile. Despite being in a uniformed force, she often thumbed her nose at her superiors, bypassing them to reach out to her political bosses. Small wonder, then, she was not really on the best of terms with a large number of her male cadre colleagues. Her public image essentially won her the Ramon Magsaysay award, another of those ‘achievements’ which gave her a swollen head. Soon she went on to found her own NGO while still in service and controls it fully, running it like most NGO entrepreneurs do from her own home. Sometime ago, it was revealed that she billed for executive class air tickets while actually traveling economy. Once it became public, she claimed that that she deposited the difference in cost into her NGO account. Earlier, while posted in Mizoram she had got into trouble for getting her daughter admitted in a medical college using the reserved quota meant for Mizo tribals. Now to Kejriwal. A mechanical engineer from IIT Kharagpur, he joined the IRS but was never really interested in a bureaucratic career. Soon, he too helped found an NGO and got increasingly involved in its activities. His superiors were fed up with his playing hooky,
and pulled him up a number of times. However, his involvement with the NGO won him the Magsaysay award and he was soon done with ‘file-pushing.’ However, he too cut moral and legal corners, resigning from government service without fulfilling the commitment to serve at least three years after the conclusion of his two-year paid study leave. He blamed the UPA bosses for penalizing him for his role in the Anna Hazare anti-corruption campaign. But the truth is that he was legally committed to reimburse the government for resigning before three years. Eventually, pay he did but,
INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor according to him, the money came from his well-wishers and not from his own pocket. That would be the first of many times he would use others to pick up his bills. Not unlike other run-of-the-mill politicians, Kejriwal, the self-styled anti-corruption messiah, too seems to believe that being in the business of public service entitles him to source funds for his private use from his ‘friends and well-wishers.’ That was how he had continued to occupy for more than a year the chief minister’s bungalow though he was entitled to it for ‘49 days’ plus one month. Again, on his own admission, he relied on unnamed friends to pay the market rent for the said bungalow. A strong sense of self-denial and self-respect alone could have dissuaded him against accepting such financial bail-outs from nameless others. Indeed, he had almost cut another underhand deal for staying in the

So to the question ‘What is unchanging?’ you cannot answer from your experience. Only the Rishis can. There exists something which does not change. Who is knowing that everything is changing? When you watch the roadside traffic, you are the Subject; everything else is the Object. Is there not in you a centre which is observing, knowing and becoming conscious of all changes? Therefore you must be the changeless. There exists something in you which is changeless – in your BMI. This subjective essence in me is changeless, because it is not conditioned by space and time. This immortal essence, essential ‘I’ in my true nature, is the pure Consciousness, Light or Awareness. All our experiences are dancing about because of this. They are all shining because of this Awareness. That which you are not aware of does not exist. That there exists such an essential Reality is the theme of all scriptures. There exists something higher in every one of us. It is called Brahman. That is not a thing in itself. It is represented by AUM. It stands for the changeless centre from which one picks up all his conscious experiences. — Swami Chinmayananda
tony Civil Lines area until one of the owners of the disputed property objected. However, between Kejriwal and Bedi, the former is better placed to run his party very much the way he wants. Kejriwal is the public face, the sole leader, indeed the lone arbiter of the AAP. Period. All others must play second fiddle to him. For evidence, notice the numerous axed-AAP ‘leaders’. One of them, namely, Shazia Ilmi, has promised to ‘expose’ AAP. Voters in Delhi are waiting with bated breath to know what Ms.Ilmi, once the most vociferous voice of AAP, has to say about our tin-pot crusader Kejriwal. As for Bedi in her new role as a card-carrying BJP leader, well, she will have to curb her tendency to play the prima donna. BJP is an old and established party with a formal organizational structure. It certainly does not take kindly to anyone who might want to play the lone ranger. As against the family-owned parties, the BJP does things after considerable deliberation. Individuals suffused with their own sense of importance have invariably come to grief in the BJP. Therefore, Bedi will have to curb her ‘command and control’ tendencies and try and become a team player. Name recognition gives her an advantage alright but it does not give her the license to lord over her colleagues. Yes, Kejriwal is the chief ministerial candidate of the party founded and being controlled fully by him. So far, the BJP has not named anyone as its chief ministerial candidate. That should be fine with her, unless she wants to ruffle feathers in the party. Her being in the BJP has certainly added an extra zing to the party’s campaign. Voters have got a ‘face’ to identify the Delhi BJP with when it comes to countering the relentless Kejriwal media onslaught. Meanwhile, Bedi should try and counter tall claims about stupendous achievements claimed by Kejriwal during those tumultuous 49 days as a novice CM. He lies when he says there were no raids on traders during those 49 days; lies about Delhi becoming corruption-free. Is truthful when he tells a meeting of traders that he too is a Bania, but then exposes his own opportunistic streak. Admittedly, there is a lot of artifice in the public personas of Bedi and Kejriwal. Both rode the Anna Hazare bandwagon to acquire for themselves larger than life images. Voters in Delhi are set to choose one of them a winner on February 7. On balance, Bedi seems to be on the winning side.
Trouble for ‘Raj Jyotshi’
R
EPORTS from Sri Lanka speak of the sorry plight of the astrologer of the defeated Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. His resident astrologer, Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena, it is reported, had pushed Rajapaksa to advance the poll by two years, insisting that he was bound to win. But Rajapaksa lost. And his full fury has fallen on his astrologer. Rajapaksa has evicted Abeygunawardena from the bungalow he had gifted him for keeps, taken back the car which too was placed full-time at his disposal, and, before resigning as president, dismissed him from the board of a state-run bank. Now, Rajapaksa’s anger against his astrologer is understandable, especially when he had led him to his electoral doom. But, by the same logic, is it not incumbent on the successor regime to come to the aid of Abeygunawaradena? After all, if he did Rajapaksa a great disservice, he did Maithripala Sirisena a great favour by dint of which he is now the President of Sri Lanka. Should not Sirisena, then, come to the rescue of Abeygunawaradena, who till the morning of January 8 was the undisputed ‘Raj Jyotshi’ of Sri Lanka?

Since the announcement of the polls to the Delhi Assembly, hectic rounds of discussion are underway in the media about its likely outcome. However, a couple of possibilities cannot be altogether ruled out: both the BJP and the AAP have strong pockets of influence in the middle class localities. If this category of voters gets almost equally divided amongst the two, the Congress, with good backing from Dalits and minorities, can play the role of a king maker in case of a re-emergence of an hung House, or if the secular vote splits vertically between the Congress and the AAP, the Saffron Party will have a cake walk with a majority of its own. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

move by the government. Spitting on the streets is simply not civilized. It’s a foul habit that frankly has no place in the modern society and it is right that those nasty individuals who think they can get away with think again. Why some people feel the need to launch their bodily fluids on the paths and pavements every one also uses is quite beyond me. Spitting in public places is a sickening sight that most of us witness every day, every where – on roads, in parks, in offices , in residential apartments. The worst part is that people are not apologetic about it. They think that it is their right to spit wherever they wish. As per research, spit can be a potential killer. Tobacco chewers who like to paint public spaces red with their spittle are considered a serious threat in this regard. This is a deeprooted habit of millions of people. The state government should take a major step against anti-spitting and strongly implement the law across the state.

fter many years of delay, aircraft major Boeing is expected to handover the muchawaited maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Mihan SEZ in Nagpur to national carrier Air India by March, according to a state government official. "The construction of entire infrastructure, including the 1.8-kmlong taxi-way and the MRO facility is completed. We expect the handing-over procedure to be completed by March," Maharashtra Airport Development Company General Manager for Marketing S Sitarasu told PTI. Sitarasu said the USD 100-million MRO facility should start commercial operations by early April, if the handing over process gets completed by March. The Nagpur MRO facility, fully built by Boeing and is spread over 50 acres, is the offshoot of an agreement between Air India and Boeing following the massive Dreamliner orders the national carrier had placed with the US company in 2006. So far the project, which is expected to be a revenue churner for the loss-making national carrier, has missed several deadlines due to land acquisition and regulatory issues. Its previous deadline was March 2013. Last time, it got for delayed as the
NOW ‘MAKE IN INDIA’... US aircraft maker Boeing is epected to handover the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Mihan SEZ in Nagpur to Air India by March. MADC had failed to complete the construction of the 1.8-km long taxi way, which will link the airport with the MRO facility. Touted as one of the most modern MRO facilities in the subcontinent, the MRO will service aircraft such as B-737s, B-777s and the Dreamliners of both domestic as well as international carriers. Air India, however, will be able to use the facility for free as part of Boeing's offset obligations. Also, the facility will have two wide-body hangars and a GE90/GenX engine overhaul shop. The national carrier had, last year,
hived off its MRO unit into a separate business entity, Air India Engineering Services and placed around 7,400 of its workforce under it. Besides undertaking the in-house maintenance, repair and overhaul of the Boeing aircraft, the MRO facility will also fetch business from third-parties to make the subsidiary viable. The total Indian MRO market currently stands at $800 million, which is expected to touch $2.5 billion mark by 2020. Air India expects to clock around Rs.500 crore revenue from its MRO business in the first year of PTI

The credit society administrator argued that since the complaint was filed after he took charge of the troubled society, he was not liable to pay the maturity amount. "The deposits made by the complainant pertained to the period prior to his appointment as administrator, hence, the claims made by the complainant do not relate to him," the administrator said. It was further stated that the administrator does not have an authority to take policy decisions on such issues. However, the forum in its order said, "It appears from the available records that the complainant was denied his accumulated sum right from September 3, 2010, due to acute financial shortage of the opposite party, occurred due to fraudulent acts of the members of the managing body, which ultimately resulted in to the appointment of administrator to run its operations." But the administrator is legally bound to discharge his functions in relations to the complainant's present claim also, it further said. "The legitimate claim of the complainant requesting to pay the sum under his fixed deposit account and balance at credit in his savings bank account, is denied on irrelevant, irregular and unlawful grounds and contrary to mutual contract," the forum noted in its order.

The credit society, which is facing financial issues, had argued that since an administrator had been appointed to run its operations, it is not liable to return the deposits of the account holder. However, the forum president M.Y. As the budget nears many views and much advise for the government floods social platforms; some good, some impractical. But in-between there are sound hypothesis from a few intellectuals that merit consideration. Perhaps, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will find some wisdom in the case, best selling author and Chartered Accountant with a doctorate in taxation Dr. Anil Lamba builds for reducing taxes without sacrificing revenue in gross numbers... Your call Mr Jaitley! The Laffer curve is typically represented as a graph which starts at 0% tax with zero revenue, rises to a maximum rate of revenue at an intermediate rate of taxation, and then falls again to zero revenue at a 100% tax rate. However, the actual existence and shape of the curve is uncertain and disputed. One potential result of the Laffer curve is that increasing tax rates beyond a certain point will be counter-productive for raising further tax revenue

irect taxes are an important source of revenue for any nation. Every government faces the dilemma of increasing tax collection and at the same time not upsetting the electorate. Many a government has been known to desist from imposing taxes, revenues from which the country is in dire need of, lest they lose the taxpayers' votes. This is, of course, based on an incorrect premise that to increase tax collection, tax rates must also increase. However the reverse is true. The theory, enunciated by Ibn Khaldun, a 14th century Muslim philosopher, and many years later by the 20th century British economist John Maynard Keynes, and which was illustrated in December 1974 by Arthur Laffer on a paper napkin while having dinner at a restaurant, (now famously called the Laffer Curve) states that tax revenues would be zero if tax rates were either 0% or 100%, and somewhere in between 0% and 100% is a tax rate which maximizes total revenue. The Laffer curve illustrates the concept that taxable income will change in response to changes in the rate of taxation. It postulates that no tax revenue will be raised at the extreme tax rates of 0% and 100% and that there must be at least one rate where tax revenue would be a non-zero maximum.
0%
would cause people not to work as hard or not at all, thereby reducing tax revenue. Eventually, if tax rates reached 100% then all people would choose not to work because everything they earned would go to the government. At a 0% tax rate, the model assumes that no tax revenue is raised. At the extreme of a 100% tax rate, the government theoretically collects zero revenue because taxpayers change their behavior in response to the tax rate: either they have no incentive to work or they find a way to avoid paying taxes. Conversely as tax rates come down, initially tax collection decreas-
es. But as rates are further decreased tax collections actually start rising since there is less incentive to evade and the consequences of not paying appear more severe than the pain of paying. The committee on Direct Tax Reforms appointed in 1991 and headed by Dr Raja Chelliah in its report had strongly recommended sending a clear signal to the population of India that we are entering a low tax regime and that the tax rates will be successively reduced from the existing 60% (in certain cases) to 30%. Dr Manmohan Singh, in his budget for 1992-93, accepted Dr Chelliah’s
recommendations in Toto, and started the tax reduction process, which, with a few hiccups, gradually did bring the rates down to the current 30%. Contrary to doomsayers, the tax collection in the country has actually risen, year after year. I think it is time to now take this to the next level. Encouraged by its experience the government should announce a new round of slashing of tax rates and a simultaneous withdrawal of exemptions to bring down the highest rate to maybe 15% over the next 3 to 5 years.

The curve suggests that, as taxes increase from low levels, tax revenue collected by the government also increases. It also shows that tax rates increasing after a certain point

Mobile Trends Telecom Vendors Need To Watch In 2015 Afternoon Despatch & Courier
T
By Manish Maheshwari, Co-Founder & MD, txtWeb
he proliferation of the Internet has been rapid in India, but it is nowhere near the fast pace of mobile growth in the country. In 2014, the mobile user base grew at a steady 8% and was expected to reach 815 million users by the end of the year. India has proved to be a Mobile- first country where a majority of users get their first taste of the Internet through their mobiles. It then becomes of extreme importance that brands and telecom vendors understand the new mobile economy and leverage new developments to engage with the new always connected customer. Let’s take a look at the key trends that will define the Mobile Ecosystem in 2015. Payments: A significant percentage of the youth in India, a target demographic for many companies lie outside the traditional methods of payments. While they might not have a credit/debit card or even a bank account, there is one device they all have or have access to – the mobile phone. Mobile gives vendors the unprecedented opportunity of capitalizing on this untapped purchasing power. In 2015, MCommerce is set to grow exponentially and companies that have mobile friendly or mobile customized payment solutions are the ones who will reap the benefits. Those who take it to the next level, by setting up customer loyalty programs and engagement strategies will be at the forefront of the M-commerce revolution. Engagement & Micro-moments: The consumer in 2015 is one that is always connected to his or her mobile. Vendors and companies need to move beyond the point of purchase to engage the consumer on a regular basis. Features like geo-tagging and geo-fencing allows them to pinpoint the exact location of
« GUEST COLUMN the user and then, push the most relevant content towards them. It is paramount that brands create a seamless mobile experience for users and deliver “Micro-moments”. These moments consist of brief engagements where vendors grab consumer attention and anticipate/address their needs. Personalization: In today’s world, most companies witness an alignment of product, marketing and technology. But the customer needs to be at the centre of this trio. Vendors will need to personalize their experience based on consumer behavior. Here data will play an essential role in allowing vendors to know their customer, create customized experience thereby keeping the customer happy and retaining their business. The key is to talk to the consumer rather than “talking at” them. Personalization paired with excellent customer service will be a major driver to improve customer relations and the overall bottom line of
any business. India presents an interesting scenario as a majority of “unconnected” users remain in rural areas. By June 2015, Mobile Internet users in urban areas will continue to grow to 160 million but in rural India, it will reach under half that number with 53 million users. The concern of the day is to boost this figure drastically to reach the remaining 800 million mobile users. To achieve this, the content provided to these users needs to be customized to suit their interests and requirements, which can be attempted in the following ways: Digitize offline local content. Think about the early days of internet when newspapers and magazines made scanned copied of their printed version available on their website instead of creating original content for online users. This would be a temporary stop-gap arrangement. Translate current online content into relevant local language. While the process of pure translation can be automated, but making the content relevant is difficult because the offline population is very different from those online. Create new locally relevant content in a scalable way. An ideal long-term solution would be democratizing creation so that anyone with any mobile device can create relevant local content for his or her family, community and village with little or no coding knowledge. To expand their market share and revenues, Telecom vendors will need to provide users with locally relevant mobile content as valueads in order to maximize the profits of the mobile revolution. They will also need to device strategies and form key partnerships in 2015 to ensure that the customer remains central to their growth strategy.

s Vladimir Ilyich Lenin once said, “there are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.” Truly, in global financial markets and in back home, we were witness to some interesting chess board moves from some leading central bankers. Indian markets got a shot in the arm, as Dr. Rajan obliged with a 25 bps reduction in the key lending and borrowing rates of the central bank. On the other hand, Swiss National bank triggered a “black swan” event by deciding to drop the peg on the EUR/CHF. Indian Rupee yo-yoed but closed the week on a very strong note, below 62 handle. Offshore centers continued to dictate the trend and as usual, onshore remained a price taker. Interestingly, over the last many years, Indian financial markets have seen parallel offshore centers usurp the role of price discovery in Rupee denominated financial assets. Though global trading of our local assets is a natural offshoot of an interconnected financial market but there needs to an introspection as to why we are surrendering the role of prices making to offshore centers. The answer could be in the regulatory set-up, some of which may be avoidable and changeable and some unavoidable. Infact, the decision to announce a change in monetary policy just 30/45 minutes before the opening bell in India might have had an unintended effect of augmenting the participation in and importance of offshore FX, interest rates and equity markets. It was not so much a surprise to see RBI reduce rates, as the central bank governor had alluded in his speech during the monetary policy in December that, mid-policy moves in rates can occur and also they can happen during early part of new-year. Market driven interest rates were

already trading quite a distance below the RBI’s repo floor at 8%. Offshore traders, in their eagerness to own Indian debt paper, were leaving no stones unturned to get a seat into the lower rate cycle in India. We through our research pieces had highlighted the strong deflationary forces driving India’s bull market. India, along with the world is in midst of a deflationary to dis-inflationary cycle coupled with little or no growth. Whatever inflationary boom is being seen is happening in financial assets, where promise of more and more monetary stimulus is repressing financial volatility and thereby underwriting the ongoing bull market in it. Indian government is taking steps to kick start the investment cycle by building necessary infrastructure. India’s focus on investment cycle lead growth over consumption lead growth, which the country followed during 2009 to 2013, is dis-inflationary in nature, as it augment supply more than demand. Demand benefits from the multiplier effect but inflation can remain benign for long. Globally strong deflationary impulse is flowing from processed goods and services exporters like China, Europe and also from raw material or commodity producers like oil producing nations and commodity producing nations. Deflation has become a public enemy number one for central banks in the developed west. The reason is that an economy driven by large amounts of public and private debt cannot sustain a deflationary environment. In deflation, the obligation to service debt remains constant whereas the source of income to service it falls in nominal terms. Hence, it has become a Sisyphean Task inflate an economy so that debt burden can remain serviceable. We need to keep a close eye on China, where massive amounts of leverage in the economy is now facing strong deflationary forces. China is trying the old trick of the western central bankers, of more monetary stimulus and interest rate reduction. However, for China such a monetary stimulus can further aggravate the dis inflationary pressures as excess production capacity and debt is further augment to even unserviceable level. At the same time, lower interest income can reduce income and suppress consumption.
Turning our attention back to India’s macro numbers, we see a mixed performance on merchandise trade in December. Indian merchandise exports contracted by 3.8% month on month in December at USD 25.4 billion and also de-grew 2.1% on a year on year basis. Imports in December also fell 4.8% to USD 34.8 bn, compared to USD 36.6 bn in the corresponding period of a year earlier. On a year on year comparison, imports dropped by 18.7%, thanks to the collapse in commodity prices. As a result, after quite a while, the trade deficit narrowed in December, to USD 9.4 bn, lowest in the current financial year, from USD 10.2 bn in December 2013. It had been as high as USD 16.9 bn in November. December trade deficit number is now below the annual run rate of USD 11.42 billion. Petroleum product exports plunged 21.2% at USD 3.8 bn in December against USD 4.9 bn. All in all, we see the trend of lower trade deficit continuing as India gets the benefit of lower oil prices. However, export growth needs to pickup if the quality of CAD has to improve. In global economy all the discussions were hijacked by the Swiss National Bank, who decided to drop the 1.2 floor under the Euro/Swiss Franc. The Swiss National Bank shocked the financial markets on Thursday by scrapping a three-year-old cap on the franc, sending the currency soaring against the all currencies and Swiss stocks plunging on fears for the export-reliant Swiss economy. With more than 40 percent of Swiss exports going to the euro zone, firms across Switzerland warned of a plunge in profits, with the luxury and tourism industries most exposed. At the same time, a 30/35% rise in Swiss Franc in few seconds triggered margin called related losses across the FX market. There were widespread reports of retail FX brokers being crippled by client losses and
also a few bank treasuries taking a knock. Equity markets outside Switzerland took the news on stride, as traders were much more glued to the expected QE from the ECB next Thursday. There are now talk of a trillion or more Euros of asset purchase program to be announced by ECB. Under the program ECB could announce that respective national central banks would purchase their own governments debt. The program could in the footsteps of an already existing program called emergency liquidity assistance (ELA). In such a program "any costs of, and the risks arising from, the provision of ELA are incurred by the relevant National Central Bank, such as the Bank of Spain for example. In such structure, each NCB would buy some prescribed amount of its nation's government bonds and assume all the risk of these purchases. Thus the Bank of Spain, not the ECB, would assume all the risk for Spanish government bonds it purchases via this program. At the same time, ECB might not buy the government debt of Greek Government as its rating remains too low. Over the next week, key events to watch for would be the ECB meeting as well as PMI data from Euro zone and other major economies. UK economy would also report its December employment data, China will release its Q4 GDP estimate and IMF will release its World Economic Outlook updates. There are no major economic release from India. India rupee has become one of top performing currencies in 2015, appreciating rapidly against almost all currencies. The sharp rise in Rupee will have adverse impact on the export of goods and services. However, there is little that the central bank can do in an interconnected global

economy. Dr. Rajan has warned a number of times in recent past, that divergent trends in monetary policies in the world, as well as extremely low riskreward opportunities, can trigger a flood of capital to destinations like India. Under such circumstances speculative euphoria can distort currencies and local asset prices. India is seeing an boom in inflows into local debt and equity markets, where investors are willing to sacrifice prudent and necessary risk over momentum. It is the promise of greater and strong economic returns which is compelling investors to pay a bigger and bigger premium to take part in the boat ride. The momentum train can very well continue atleast till the Union Budget, unless cut short by a phase of massive risk aversion in global markets. Indian Rupee can continue to benefit from this influx of foreign currency into the country. From here on the extent of appreciation in Rupee would depend on where and how aggressively RBI draws the line under the pair. Speculators like to follow the path of least resistance when making money in asset classes and therefore they do not like to take on central banks, especially when the latter is on a strong wicket. Offshore speculators would be eager to buy the Rupee till the point where RBI comes in heavily and defends. Till now RBI has not shown much resolve in drawing a hard line under the USD/INR pair, which means that speculators will take it as sign that the central bank is comfortable with a rising Rupee. This is happening at a time when one central banker has already surrendered (SNB) to the market forces due to the expectation of overwhelming amount of ECB QE related flows. Will now the Indian central bank too take a back seat and allow the speculators to hammer the Rupee higher? We will have the answer this week. Technically, USD/INR has broken through a key trendline support around 62.30/40 and is now holding above another key technical congestion zone of 61.50/75 region. Incase of a sustained trading below 61.50, it can open up possibilities of 60.90/80 and below that around 60.40/20 region. On the way up, the pair needs to clear 62.30/40 to bring the USD bulls back in the game.

Residential Rentals To Stabilise In The City
U
By Mayura Shanbaug
nlike other cities, Mumbai continues to face a huge affordability challenge. This is resulting in the housing rentals moving upwardly (read 1015% y-o-y) for the last few years. Apart from unaffordability, other factors like relocation of Central Business District (CBD), redevelopment across the city have equally contributed in the movement. But with the easing of EMI pressure with the RBI’s recent rate cuts now and in near future is expected to make affordability little easier. Experts believe that this will eventually stabilize the residential rental market. According to Sandeep Sadh, CEO, Mumbai Property Exchange, certain markets have shown the momentum like Thane, Ghatkopar but hasn't shown real movement in rentals in the recent months. “There are many reasons why rentals were northbound in the city , firstly the prices are really unaffordable for the last many years, secondly relocation of CBD have forced many to shift to the places like Andheri (W), Bandra, Goregaon and Malad in western suburbs and to Navi Mumbai, Thane in central suburbs,” says Sadh. Plus availability of good projects, proximity to good school or malls has become a decision making criterion for many to shift to different location,” he says. With the launch of new projects like Oberoi Realty, Wadhwa group and Lodha's 'The Park' generating good buzz, the sentiments look buoyant with more inventory coming in the market. “People who want to stay in good property and can’t afford to buy it are also going for rentals,” explains Sadh. “A two bedroom flat in the recently launched Oberoi Exquisite is priced around Rs 4 crore whereas if you rent a property in the same project it comes at just Rs 1 lakh per month, which is quite affordable to many,” he explains further. High interest rate for housing loan is another reason why rentals kept on increasing in the last few years feels Yashwant Dalal, President, Estate Agents Association Of India (EAAI). “When someone is paying 10-11% interest to the bank every month and just getting a return of 2.5-3% every month in rentals every month for the investment property, such a person would certainly like to bridge the gap, asking for more rentals y-o-y,” Dalal says. Rentals also depend on the factors like location, projects and amenities available,” he says. A flat in a new tower would obviously cost more than in an old building in the same vicinity,” he adds. However, Dalal
stated that there are around 4500 incomplete projects in the city indicating that the supply side constraints are still there, “but situation seems to be getting better with announcement of many new projects in the city,” he adds. According to Om Ahuja, CEO, Residential Services, JLL India, the common man cannot afford 2 BHK home within 30 minutes’ commuting distance from the CBD. This has become a possibility in cities like Bangalore, Gurgaon and Pune but not Mumbai. “This is resulting in Mumbai losing out big time when compared to other cities,” says Ahuja. As far as real estate prices is concerned says Ahuja, price appreciation in the CBD area will be driven by three critical triggers - residential projects supply, connectivity and infrastructure, and job creation, which is led by commercial space leasing. “The hotspots in this context are Mahalaxmi, Worli, BKC, Andheri, Powai, Chembur, Mulund and Thane. The demand in Lower Parel, Wadala and Borivali-Virar belt is also promising,” he says. Ahuja feels that specific pockets like Bandra (West & East), KalinaSantacruz and Powai will see an uptrend in the residential rental prices. According to Ahuja, other than these zones, which have material impact due to CBD activity, other pockets are currently driven with demand getting generated from redevelopment activity in the city. “The sustainability of this demand is strong and will continue to strengthen in the coming years,” he says. South Mumbai, the oddball... When the rest of Mumbai was fuming with high rentals in the last few years, South Mumbai is witnessing steady decline in the rentals, commercial as well as residential for the very reason it was famous for being the CBD. With businesses and multinational companies opting out of the costly but congested premises of South Mumbai... for the affordable and spacious areas like Bandra, Andheri, and Lower Parel...South Mumbai continues to lose its hold and money. As per Om Ahuja, South Mumbai will continue to facing stress. “Rentals may soften further in this zone, leaving only a few specific pockets like Mahalaxmi and Worli with upward trend,” he says. Echoing similar sentiments but giving different reason, Yashwant Dalal says that the outgoing Congress government has given occupancy certificates to many South Mumbai projects before the elections. “That resulted in fresh supply being available with the dwindling demand,” he says.
How do you pick your trades? Do you use technical analysis, or do you employ fundamental data? I use technical analysis as my primary tools for investments. The most important aspects of my trading are Relative strength, Trend following, Money management and trade analysis. How would you describe your methodology? The methodology is fairly simple. First I define the market trend based on technical analysis of equity, commodity, bonds and currency markets. I make sure that all markets are taken into consideration before a general direction of the market is ascertained (Bullish or Bearish). The second step is to use a broader market index like the Nifty or Sensex and use it as a base to find out which sectors are outperforming/underperforming on a relative basis to these indices. Then stocks which are outperforming the best sectors and underperforming the worst sectors. This activity will give a list of stock to buy and a list of stocks to sell. Using a chosen set of technical analysis and derivative tools I trade these stocks for an optimum time frame. What appeals to you about trading? The short side or the long side? Trading is about being on the right side of the trade. The market offers opportunities on both sides and I look to profit from both the short and long side.
What differentiates you from otherInvestors? The ability to patiently wait for a trade is an important aspect which helps me. Also having a defined set of universe built into my trading methodology is extremely helpful.
Is there any applicable lesson to investing? Patience, conviction and freedom from greed are the most important traits which one should exercise while trading/investing.
How much of what you do is gut felt? Gut feel is a phenomenon which comes into play in two ways. Firstly it could be an inbuilt strength which develops over a period of time of trading/watching and learning the markets. This feel based on instincts may give you an extra level of caution or conviction to trade according to your method. This gut feel is useful and may get developed after decades of experience in the markets. The second gut feel is purely driven by impulse. I refrain from taking a trading decision based on gut feel as it may be counterproductive.
Do you try to anticipate or follow market trends? What is the basis? It is highly profitable to anticipate market trend correctly as it gives you an early entry. I try to gauge market trends based on certain factors: 1. Are two significant market trends together: for example are falling commodity prices leading the bond yields lower 2. If there is a significant correlation and causation between two significant markets then I read the charts for both of these markets and ascertain whether the price action is in sync. If the action is in sync then the other two markets are referred to for any divergence and a final decision in arrived at. When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide when you're wrong? What do you do next? Whenever I take a trade I have a set level of stop losses before I
« MARKET WIZARD SAHIL KAPOOR
execute the trade. Therefore if it moves against me I would take a loss and move on. I do not average losing trades. I prefer to increasing positions only if they are making some money.
Do you have a scenario about how the current bullmarket will end? Where do you see the Indian markets five years down the road? The current bull market looks structural and secular. If we see previous bull markets and extrapolate we can expect another 2 to 3 years of price gains. However it will have its share of volatility with large down moves as well. I expect Sensex to rise beyond 40000 in next 2 to 3 years. What makes an investor successful? Having a plan and sticking to it is one aspect. Then to continuously try and improve your strategy with experience and learning adds to this strategy. Being objective and not acting on impulse are also important traits. What is your take on the current market scenario, Indian as well as global? 2014 was an exceptional year for the Indian economy as well as for the capital markets. Last year, we witnessed several transformations, viz: stability of the Indian economy, improvement in the political scenario and increased confidence in the Indian markets. These factors, in conjunction with the favourable global trends, have led to equity markets recording the highest annual returns in the last 5 years. In a nutshell, 2014 has been the year of: Equity markets giving a return of ~32%, the highest in 5 years; Record high FII flows, total
Art Insurance For The Connoisseurs MUKESH KUMAR

rt Insurance for the Connoisseurs of Art Art has been an integral part of Indian culture, and it is difficult to separate India from the Art. With a number of Art forms close to extinction, the connoisseurs of art are getting more conscious of preservation of whatever remains. Increasing awareness, growing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of art has resulted in the value of artistic objects growing exponentially in the last few years. Fine Art, Antique Furniture, Musical Instruments, Statues and Sculptures and other important collectibles are increasingly viewed as an asset whose value continues to grow. According to estimates, the Indian art market has grown more than
500% in sales in the last five years. The affluent class, young entrepreneurs, who choose art as an investment opportunity, and an upward trend of the Indian art-work collectors are the key drivers of growth for art market. With rising value of artistic objects such as paintings and antiques, the concept of Art Insurance is gaining traction with the connoisseurs of art, which includes individuals as well as corporates. Also the Art Insurance is a perfect protection product for the trades of art. With huge number of valuable artistic objects, estimates suggest that the value of Art that can be insured in India totals to about US $1 billion. A typical Art Insurance covers the risk like damage during transit, restoration and framing. There are risks associated with handling the piece of art within the premises of a gallery which can also be covered. It extends covers to natural perils, accidental damages and terrorism damage.
A few non-life Insurance majors offer insurance for the Indian connoisseurs of art in form of an Art Insurance Policy, which is designed to meet the needs of Corporate Collectors, Individual Collectors (from the modest enthusiast and first time buyers), Fine Art Dealers, Museums, Antique Dealers and Art Exhibitions. An Art Insurance Policy provides comprehensive protection to the insured property including insured property while in transit within India. The Coverage under a standard Art Insurance policy includes any unforeseen and sudden physical loss or damage from any cause, other than those specifically excluded This Policy also covers all Insured property whilst in transit on “wall to wall” basis whilst on premises on display including storage within the territorial limits mentioned in the schedule for the purpose of business or profession. A standard Art Insurance Policy is subject to below inbuilt coverages: New Acquisitions Clause: Up to 25% subject to a certain maximum (typically, up to Rs 50 lakh) Sue and Labour Clause: Up to 10% claim amount Debris Removal Clause: Up to 10% claim amount Premium for an Art Insurance Policy depends upon the factors such as Sum Insured, Type of fine art (antique furniture, musical instruments, statues and sculptures), security measures available at the premises, coverage, geographical limit and the type of collector.
of ~US$42bn net investments in debt & equity combined ; BJP winning 282 Lok Sabha seats in the general elections. This is the first time in 30 years that a single largest party gained majority in the Lok Sabha; Consumer inflation falling to record low of 4.4%, much lower than the peak of 11% in 2013; Crude oil prices falling by 48%, the steepest annual fall since 2008, and the INR depreciating by 2%, the least in last 4 years. Now the big question is: What is in store for India in 2015? Looking ahead to 2015, we have some pertinent questions to pose. Is 2015 going to be a significant year in terms of sustained economic growth? What is in store for equity investors: will markets soar or remain subdued? and Which are the significant changes that we should look forward to in terms of both domestic as well as global factors? To answer these questions, we look at some of the prominent trends that have started playing out in India and study their impact on the domestic economy and various sectors. We have identified the best sectors and stocks to play in 2015 based on these discernible trends. Earnings expectations are soaring; Backed by recovery in domestic growth. The consensus two-year forward EPS estimate for Sensex companies is currently standing at INR2207 for FY17E which implies 23% YoY growth. This is the highest growth in EPS estimates since December 2010. GDP growth has also bottomed out and we have started seeing tell-tale signs of an economic revival. In the past two quarters GDP growth stood at 5.7% and 5.3% respectively, the highest readings since June 2012. A modest pick-up in the domestic investment cycle, coupled with the improved economic sentiment is likely to set the right stage for the growth momentum to continue. With a proactive government at the Centre pushing for GST, “Make in India”, speeding up coal block auctioning process and working towards enhanced ease-of-doing business, we believe that growth trajectory will continue to be upwards. BRICS Divergence, Largest in the last 5 years… In the last five years, emerging markets (EM), especially BRICS, have been moving in tandem. However, in 2014 we saw a vast divergence between the best and worst performing EMs. Indian markets outperformed all other BRICS nations, notching a stellar 31% return in 2014, much higher than the (-)10% average for other 4 BRICS nations. This divergence is mainly due to improvement in India’s macroeconomic scenario vis-a-vis other EMs, besides due to the positive change in the political landscape in India. We believe that the divergence among BRICS nations to continue as global terms of trade are supporting India and favorable demography will lead this country towards a prolonged high and sustainable growth. We continue to remain bullish on the Indian equity markets with a CY15 Nifty target of 9300-9500. This would indicate a 16-17x P/E at FY16 earnings estimate.
FOR AN ADDITIONAL PREMIUM, A STANDARD ART INSURANCE POLICY CAN BE EXTENDED TO COVER:
Defective Title Automatic reinstatement Replacement of Keys and Locks Temporary Storage Costs Exhibitions Coverage
LIKE MOST INSURANCE POLICIES, ART INSURANCE POLICIES ALSO COME WITH CERTAIN EXCLUSIONS. THE KEY EXCLUSIONS ARE:
Loss from unattended vehicles Inventory losses Loss or damage at any Exhibition, unless specifically notified to and agreed by the company in advance Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, inherent vice/ defect, rust or oxidation, moth or vermin, warping or shrinkage Mechanical or electrical faults or breakdown Damage during repairing, restoring, retouching, or any similar process Aridity, humidity, exposure to light or extremes of temperature, unless such loss or damage is caused by storm, frost or fire Willful act of insured and its representative working in collusion with the insured Mysterious disappearance or unexplained loss

Helping Women To Succeed In Business By Krishna Bisht
C
reation of a civilized and cultured society is possible only when every section of society enjoys equal opportunity to grow. Women constitute nearly half of the population, hence it is imperative to provide them an equal opportunity to succeed in every field. It was a very big challenge for me to change the mindset of women and to make them understand the importance of earning their own livelihood. The daily routine of these women in Almora involves hard labour. A little change in their daily routine and training them in various fields help them different business activities. It takes every second of involvement and sacrifice to nurture your dreams.
<<The author is the recipient of the 22nd IMC Ladies’ Wing Jankidevi Bajaj Puraskar 2014, the IMC Ladies' Wing's initiative to recognize women entrepreneurs for their extraordinary and outstanding entrepreneurial excellence in Rural India. It is focused on discovering and honoring the successive generations of women entrepreneurs who are dedicated to rural upliftment and business entrepreneurship on behalf of her NGO Mahila Haat There exists a plethora of successful business women entrepreneurs both in social and economic fields in India. To be a successful entrepreneur, women need to be mentally strong and be abreast of the socio economic changes in the society. It is always a challenge for women to put forward their ideas at the grass root level and even more challenging to communicate such ideas to people who can help in the growth of the process. For women unable to go to school for any formal education, literacy centers may be started in the village which will help them conveniently and confidently to carry out their day-to-day work along with obtaining education. One of the biggest hurdles for women in the process of nurturing and managing their business is their family. Women have to wear different hats and play multiple roles, hence many a time it becomes difficult for women to prioritize business over family. Women are known to be averse to risk. If you have dreamt of something it needs to be taken seriously by you or else nobody will take it seriously and it will eventually look like a hobby to your friends and family. Being able to speak about your accomplishments honestly and with pride is a necessity for a successful business owner or entrepreneur. It does not matter how little your achievement is, nevertheless it is an achievement and people should know about it. It is also important to be recognized for the kind of work one does. Recognition helps in a moral boost and it also opens avenues for investors to associate with you.

Nifty Above 8500
NSE India : CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Monday (January 19, 2015) By Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:
The Nifty rose marginally on Friday (January 16, 2015) a net 19.65 points (0.23%) and closed at the 8513 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 8504 points level. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8452 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose steadily into the green and registered the day’s high at the 8530 points level at 2.11 p.m. It then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 79 points and closed above the psychologically important 8500 points level. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 26 were gainers, while 24 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables, healthcare and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 11.44%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 666 were gainers, 819 were losers and 41 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered into the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).
Is above its 200-day average (at 7731) Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7909 points level. The next support is at the 7831 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8581 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8499 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8467. Support (2) = 8420. Resistance (1) = 8546. Resistance (2) = 8577. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the – DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength. MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS)
The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 8381) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 8299) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 8255) Positive.

Individual loan portfolio stood at Rs 99,362cr, growth of 19% yoy; whereas developer loan portfolio was flat yoy at Rs 2582cr. RELIGARE CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON COLGATE INDIA CMP: Rs. 1961
Target Rs. 2200
We upgrade CLGT from SELL to BUY as the ongoing pick-up in macro conditions and consumption levels is expected to drive a recovery in volume growth to ~10% in FY16/FY17 along with EBITDA margin expansion of 440bps over FY14-FY17 (on higher gross margins, lower A&P spends). We believe the stock is due for a re-rating and raise our target P/E multiple from 27x to 35x, in line with HUVR, besides upgrading FY16/FY17 earnings by 8%/13%. Rolling over to Mar’16, we have a revised TP of Rs 2,200 (from Rs 1,400). Margins to improve 440bps over FY14-FY17: We expect CLGT’s EBITDA margin to improve by 440bps over FY14-FY17 to 22.2%, led by gross margin expansion of 220bps on the back of soft commodity prices coupled with product mix and price-led growth. Upgrade to BUY with a Mar’16 TP of Rs 2,200: We raise our FY16/FY17 earnings estimates by 8%/13% to build in the expected volume and margin recovery. Given improving growth visibility amid a likely pick-up in consumption, we raise our target FY17E P/E multiple from 27x to 35x, roll over to a Mar’16 TP of Rs 2,200 (from a Dec’15 TP of Rs 1,400), and upgrade the stock from SELL to BUY. Key risks to our call are (a) volumes fail to recover, (b) commodity costs inch up leading to below- estimated gross margins, and (c) competitive intensity in the oral care segment increases leading to higher-than-estimated A&P spends.
EDELWEISS CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON INDIABULLS HSG
CMP: Rs. 567 Target Rs. 653 Indiabulls Housing Finance (IHFL), a prominent mortgage financier (with AUM of INR450bn), emerged much stronger after down-sizing riskier assets post FY09. The company is undergoing structural metamorphosis with steady 20% plus asset growth, credit rating upgrades and active selldowns supporting its best-in-class NIMs. We believe an optimal product strategy with stringent risk mitigants to manage NPLs, stable franchise, high liquidity and low gearing will help sustain superior return ratios (RoA/RoE of 4%/30% plus). Moreover, high dividend yield and consistent earnings delivery will lend predictability and result in further re-rating of the stock. We initiate coverage with ‘BUY’ and target price of INR653 (upside > 30%) assigning it 3.1x FY16E adjusted book based on Gordon growth model. Consistency and stability: Fundamental cornerstones: With strengthening borrowing profile and ramp up of sales force, IHFL is now capitalised to cash in on emerging opportunities. Management is targeting steady 20-25% asset growth and stable NIMs supported by recent rating upgrades, active sell-downs and liquidity buffer, despite some pressure on yields. This, along with operating leverage benefits and controlled asset quality, will drive earnings CAGR of 20% over FY14-17E. Outlook and valuations: Pragmatic mover; initiate with ‘BUY’ We believe IHFL is an attractive opportunity in India's mortgage finance industry, which besides scaling up AUMs to INR740bn, also endeavours to instill stability in its franchise and operating metrics and deliver consistent earnings growth. This will lead to further re-rating of the stock. Based on Gordon growth model, we value the stock at 3.1x FY16 adjusted book. We initiate coverage with ‘BUY/Sector Outperformer’.

Who should buy a separate Accident insurance policy, as I already have health insurance policy? —Pradeep Kutrekar, Govandi One should take an accident insurance policy when he wants to protect his family from an accidental injury that he might be prone to. For example, if he is actively participates in any hazardous sports like water rafting,
mountain climbing, etc and he thinks that he might meet with an accident any day and wishes to protect his family against all uncertainties, then he needs to avail an Accidental Insurance Policy like National Insurance Personal Accident Policy, Oriental Insurance Personal Accident Plan, etc. If you have a Life Insurance policy, you might also get accidental coverage if your policy has an additional rider for the same. If you die in an accident, your life insurance policy would pay your nominee the Death Benefit along with the Accidental Death Benefit. Also, if you do not die in an accident, but suffer a disability or dismemberment, an accidental policy or rider pays for that as well. However, if you need Life Coverage for your family, in case you die in an accident, then you must avail a Term Plan for yourself, so that if you die in any such activity then your family is protected against the same. Along with that you could also avail a Personal Accident Benefit rider for yourself. (The author is Vice President at www.MyInsuranceClub.com, insurance comparison website in India. AICC General Secretary Ajay Maken told PTI that the party would seek legal opinion to approach the Election Commission against Kejriwal for 'insulting' the people of Delhi. "Making such statements is illegal. It is like offering money to the people," Maken, who is campaign committee chief of the party in Delhi, said. EW DELHI: AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday kicked up a controversy by asking voters in Delhi to take 'bribes' from BJP and Congress but to vote for AAP in the upcoming Delhi Assembly election. He asked the voters to 'fool' BJP and Congress by voting for AAP even after accepting 'bribe money' from them while accusing the parties of 'deceiving' the people for years. "It's election time. When people both from BJP and Congress come offering money, don't refuse, accept... Some have looted money from 2G, some have looted money from coal scam. "And if any party does not show up, go to its office and take the amount saying we were waiting but you didn't come," Kejriwal said amid cheers from the crowd. The government aims to notify over 60 sanctuaries and national parks as 'eco-sensitive zones' this year to check the negative impact of industrialisation and unplanned development in and around protected areas. We will notify more than 60 (eco-sensitive zones) this year," a senior Environment Ministry official told PTI.
Swadeshi Jagran Manch wants white paper on FDI
Government's plan to attract FDI faces stiff opposition from RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) which has demanded a white paper on the issue, claiming there have been more outflows than inflows. The Manch also has concerns over government's "Make in India" mission and e-commerce, saying it will hurt the country's interests and there is need to promote 'Swadeshi' products.

Anti-terror ops: Govt likely to frame norms for media N
EW DELHI: Indicating that there could be soon norms for media coverage of terror-related operations, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that the issue is under 'serious and very advanced consideration' of the government. Delivering the first Justice J.S. Verma memorial lecture here, he also said that the age of ban on media organisations was over and technology had rendered censorship impossible. The manner in which anti-terror operations by security agencies was covered is one of the most important issues with regard to responsibility of media in contemporary times, the Minister said. The question is whether to allow the media to go right up to the spot or if there should be constraints, he said. The I&B Minister said that intelligence agencies had claimed that real time coverage of 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai had helped the handlers of terrorists to get information about what the security agencies were doing. "Our security agencies and the Ministry of Defence are clearly of the view that this cannot be

allowed. And, therefore, during the limited duration when the security operation is on, a very strict discipline on the kind of reporting which is to take place from the place of the incident will have to be maintained," Jaitley said. "This issue is under serious and very advanced consideration of the government," he said. The Minister also said that while traditionally it was thought that a newspaper or a channel could be banned, the fact was that the days of ban were long over as it was now hardly possible to "victimise" media outfits through denial of advertisements. On the possibility of censorship, Jaitley said technology has made it impossible. "Assuming that there was emergency imposed today under Article 352 of the Constitution, the impact of the censorship would be nil. The satellite itself defies geographical boundaries...The email does not allow it, the fax machine does not allow it," he said. The Home Ministry had earlier asked the I and B Ministry to amend rules so that live coverage of anti-terror operations by television channels is banned.

Aamina’s challenging role
23
Aamina Sheikh who has won the hearts of Indian audiences with her heartwarming portrayals as Aiman and Neha in Zindagi’s popular shows 'Maat' and 'Ishq Gumshuda' respectively is back on Zindagi with its latest offering – 'Piya Re'. Aamina plays the character of protagonist Ujala in the show alongside popular Pakistani actor Adeel Hussain. She shared her thoughts on the new show By Sandeep Hattangadi
We are seeing you on a lot of shows on Zindagi? Yes, you have seen a lot of me recently on Zindagi and the channel airs the shows frequently. The shows have got a new life altogether, which is really thrilling.
Is India getting to see the best of your work or the best is yet to come? I think ‘best’ is a very relative term but I can say that in my experience when it comes to drama serials, ‘Piya Re’ has been executed sensitively. It is probably the most sensitive portrayal I have seen on-screen in Pakistani television. What is the subject of the show? The sensitive topic of rape that is being dealt with in this drama is portrayed and treated in such a way on screen that it doesn’t jolt you. It is something you can sit and watch with your family. 'Piya Re' shows how a topic like rape can be addressed, how the sensitivities can be understood and how one can move ahead from it in a progressive manner. So I think the way it is executed is really different from what you normally see. And that’s why it is one of the special projects for me. Do you think 'Piya Re' is closest to the person that you are in a strong character? Well the characters are different from each other but, yes, you will find some elements that you can relate to as a person. For example in 'Maat', my character Aiman is very different from the women of today’s times. It was tough portraying that character because Aiman was a girl who had created certain boundaries for herself and had to make all the choices based on them. But Ujala in 'Piya Re' is more like the contemporary young girl who had an artistic academic journey and gets married to her childhood sweetheart. She has been brought up in a progressive environment, so I related to that bit.
How much are the Pakistani dramas truly reflective of your society? Our society, just like India, is also made up of such dynamic sectors. There are masses, which are predominantly housewives who most of the marketers cater to, therefore our dramas also reflect quite a bit of what takes place in the lives of lower middle-class families. But then you also have a set of audience who have the buying power, they are the elite, upper class and upper middle-class sects. Hence, the dramas reflect the whole range. But perhaps, every drama does not take the creative liberty to dramatise or exaggerate things to give a sensational effect. So I wouldn’t say 100 per cent but yes, some shades of the dramas are definitely reflective of the part of society that they are representing. And probably, that’s why we get the feedback from all over the world where people tell us that they went through similar situations or know someone who has been through one. But having said that, I feel that we need to not only reflect but also try to instill certain changes in our society by not repetitively showing things that are not working and are dark in our society but show stories that are more progressive and cater more

towards the solutions to the problems that we face but in an entertaining way.
What do you think is the reason for the success of Pakistani dramas in India? I would not compare our dramas to Indian content because there was a time when Indian shows were immensely popular in Pakistan because they were different and their execution was a bit dramatised which viewers used to enjoy in our country. I think our dramas are working in India because they are different from what Indian audiences have been watching till now. They have been watching a certain kind of serials till now, and I think our dramas worked like a breath of fresh air.

Sex on the very first night
Can I have sex on the very first night of my marriage? Will it be a good step? Ninety per cent of the marriages in our country are still arranged marriages where there is no love between the partners to begin with. It is merely an arrangement done by two well-suited families to keep up a tradition. After such a marriage, a man gets the moral permission to have sex with his wife. A man with his body-oriented sexuality, who is starved for sex (as boys get sexually active around 14 years of age but get married much later) tends to get blinded towards his bride’s feelings and state of mind and ends up forcing sex on her on the first night. The woman, feeling rather awkward, uncomfortable and exploited, allows this humiliation as our orthodox teachings teach girls to be meek, submissive and tolerant. The woman gets sexually aroused only if she loves the man, but here; he is giving her all the reasons to hate him. And this is how their married life begins. Instead of love, a seed of hatred is sown. That is why we see so much pain, conflict and break-ups in marriages. I have seen many women, who

man to get sexually attracted to him. Arranged marriages, the way they are planned and executed, lack the opportunity and atmosphere for love to happen, therefore we must provide for the couple to get well acquainted with each other before marriage. Very often the couple is utterly exhausted at the end of an elaborate wedding ceremony. Both are strangers to each other. Both are ignorant or have misconceptions about the sexual experience. Men carry an anxiety about their sexual performance. Girls have the fear of pain and bleeding at the first intercourse. There is a fear of pregnancy. At the same time both feel that they have to live up to the first night fantasy as depicted in novels and movies. With so many uncertainties and anxieties, it becomes impossible for a couple to enjoy one of the most profound experiences of their life. I strongly recommend youngsters to avoid sexual intercourse on the first night, particularly in arranged marriages. There is nothing wrong if the couple decides on their own to postpone their first sexual intercourse after the marriage till both of them are physically and emotionally relaxed, instead of rushing in to fulfill the common expectation of the first night (suhaag raat). They lose
nothing, but they may gain a great deal of mutual love and respect, which can then become a foundation of a happy married life.
Growth of a beard or moustache
I am 20-year-old man. I do not have a moustache and beard. I am ver y much disturbed about it. Am I abnormal? Growth of a beard or moustache may be delayed in some men. If other secondary sexual characteristics have developed normally, such as growth of pubic hair and hair in the armpits, cracking of the voice or growth of the genitals, and if the body structure has developed like a ‘man’, there is absolutely no reason to worry. You may get your ‘Serum Testosterone’ level checked. If it is normal, do not worry. Growth of a beard and moustache also depends on your hereditary pattern and may be delayed as a variation of normal. New battle fronts emerge in Bihar

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2015
By Saroj Kumar Singh
T
he resounding victory of the BJP in the Jharkhand assembly elections has laid down a new playing board for politics in Bihar. While the blueprint of this game was drawn soon after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, a wait was on for the Jharkhand election result. Soon after the result, the political temperature of the State was certain to rise, and so it happened. Round of meetings are on behind closed doors and the most restlessness is being seen on the BJP’s side. To achieve its Mission 175 plus, the BJP has unleashed its horses in all directions. From strengthening the organisation to the work of priming booth level preparations – all this is already being done. A series of worker meetings and small rallies were also scheduled to start from the second week of January. In the third week of January, Amit Shah was scheduled to come to Bihar to review preparations. Shah will hold 37 rallies in Bihar. Usually, all parties do this, but this is BJP's special strategy for Bihar. A special team of the BJP is busy completing another important mission. The responsibility of this team is to ‘break’ the leaders of stature in Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United. The surprising thing is that rebel MLAs of the JD (U) are helping the BJP in this. In a secret manner attempts are being made to bring leaders with a big mass base on its side. In this Mission, full attention is also being paid to caste equations. The motive of the Mission is that through ‘saam-daam-dand-bhed’ (the four methods of dealing with people in general and enemies in particular as specified in the indian diplomatic tradition. Actually, there are four ways of making someone to do a task, stated as ‘Saam, Daam, Dand and Bhed’. This sutra by Acharya Chanakya is used worldwide.), the JD(U) should be broken and a message given to people that in the ruling camp there is a lot of hustle-bustle because the BJP is going to form the next government. One of the motives of the Mission is to give out a message to leaders in two minds between ‘yes’ and ‘no’ that there is a strong possibility of victory for the BJP, so waiting would not be a smart idea or move. Join us, and lay the foundation of a strong government in Bihar. From the side of the BJP, there is also an indication to its alliance partners that they can include in their camp those who for some reason find difficulty in joining the BJP. It is on this line that the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party’s (RLSP) homework is on. If informed sources are to be believed, then the BJP has started the work of taking at least half a dozen JD(U) ministers into confidence. It is being said that these leaders of the JD (U) feel that the way the results have gone in Jharkhand, nothing different from that is going to happen in Bihar. Everybody is accepting that after the resignation of Nitish, the clout of the Bihar Government has reduced. And the truth is that Nitish’s condition is like that of
Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi. People feel that Nitish, to save his credibility, has put the state at stake. People were happy with Nitish’s rule. Positive changes were taking place. Nitish had been completely successful in ending people’s despair. If today he would have been the
CM, Nitish has placed a bet on the wrong horse. The situation now is that if the BJP wins in Delhi in the assembly elections, then in Bihar its confidence will be on cloud seven. And if in Delhi the BJP loses, then Bihar’s election can prove to be a Waterloo for it. It is said that Nitish Kumar him-
is going to come after ‘Kharmas’ (inauspicious period from December 16, 2014 to January 14, 2015). There is talk that after the ‘Kharmas’, the JD(U) and the RJD may merge. Nitish and Lalu Yadav, both are busy in drawing this line. If this dream of both these leaders comes true, then for some leaders

Chief Minister, then his situation would have been much better and he alone by himself would have been in a situation to give a fight to the BJP. But Jitan Ram Manjhi has changed the whole situation. Manjhi’s government is a lax government. Due to his controversial statements, Manjhi has intentionally or unintentionally angered the backward castes. Apart from this a lot of leaders of the Dalits and backward castes feel that they would have proved to be much better as Chief Minister than Manjhi. By making Manjhi the
self feels that some lapses have occurred. The two centers of power which was being talked about earlier in hushed tones are now being spoken about openly. This is the reason that inside the JD(U) too there is different-different mobilisation. These are conditions which in the coming elections will reduce the possibility of victory for JD(U) leaders. In an election year, this kind of atmosphere inside the party has made many big leaders of the JD(U) restless. This problem is there already, but the real trouble
of both the JD(U) and RJD the days ahead are certain to get soured. In the current assembly, 70 MLAs of JD(U) are such who in a one to one fight have been elected after defeating RJD candidates. Meaning that at least on these 70 seats, two candidates will be strong contenders for ticket. That is why it is certain that good days are going to end for these 70 leaders. Out of them some may be of the JD(U) and some of the RJD. In these 70 leaders, some Ministers of the JD(U) are also included.
Pappu Yadav – a hero or a villain? P
APPU YADAV is a name regarding which there have always been different perceptions in society. During the Mandal campaign, he was a hero of one section, a villain of another section. When that era ended, then Pappu went behind bars. Because of this there was almost a full stop to his political activities. In 1994 he formed a non-political organisation – Yuva Shakti – which made society aware of Pappu Yadav’s sentiments. Pappu Yadav came out of jail and in the Lok Sabha elections not only did he himself win, his wife also became an MP from Supaul. This couple’s victory despite the Modi wave surprised political pundits. In a wave in which big veterans lost, Pappu Yadav presented an unmatched example of his political skills and election management and registered a victory. This has raised his stature considerably. Pappu Yadav is now going around the whole of Bihar. Although issues like corruption, broker culture, unreined bureaucracy, a small State and poor health services are on Pappu’s agenda, these days he is running quite an aggressive campaign against the private practice of doctors. After January 14 Pappu Yadav is going to conduct two meetings in every district. After that, he plans to hold a big rally in Patna. The irony is that in all these campaigns Pappu Yadav is not getting the support of his party –

NOTES FROM NEW DELHI
the RJD. On this question Pappu Yadav says that we are moving forward with the RJD ideology, now the party has to decide in which form it sees my cam-
paigns. Lalu Yadav’s problem is that he knows that now amongst the youth there is no craze for him. His worry also is that now he can’t contest the elections, he cannot become the claimant for the CM’s post. Given these factors, the worry of taking forward his party is also there. He is promoting his son, but not much effect of this is being seen. On the other side, Pappu Yadav wants to emerge as the biggest leader of Yadavs in Bihar and it is this that is a matter of concern for the RJD. Pappu also questions the Manjhi government. He says that some of his Ministers patronise the broker culture. Pappu Yadav these days is also giving advice to Dalit victims of religious conversion. Pappu Yadav knows very well how to keep a step ahead politically. After Lalu who is the leader of the Yadavs? When this question comes up in discussion on street
corners, then Pappu is seen much ahead of anyone else. Pappu is not leaving any stone unturned to become the leader of the almost 18 per cent Yadav population of Bihar. However, he says that I never do politics of caste, I always talk about community (jamat). But it is true that Pappu is now gradually becoming acceptable among the Yadavs. After Kosi, Seemanchal and Ang in Bihar, Pappu has now started stretching his legs in Mithilanchal. Coming from an Anand Margi background, Pappu is the ‘solicitor’ or champion of a small state. In recent days when Pappu went to Bisfi, the birthplace of legendary Maithili poet Vidyapati, amongst Maithil Brahmins he gave a speech in their language and that made everyone happy. Maithils liked the speech of Pappu Yadav in Maithili and the politics of Mithila State has gained strength. Pappu Yadav says that the land of Kosi and Mithila, inspite of being fertile has always remained exploited and neglected. Hence for social, economic and educational development, he is a supporter of a Maithili State. Pappu says that after running a social awareness campaign he is in a mood to do a big campaign in Bihar. Actually, Pappu is in discussions these days regarding his campaign. Not only his supporters but his opponents as well have started praising Pappu.
DILLI KA BABU Cadre wars
BEING the capital of two States and a Union Territory, Chandigarh witnesses a constant power tussle between babus of Punjab, Haryana and the UT cadre, due to the rather unique 60:40 ratio in posts filled from among IAS, IPS and State-cadre officers coming on deputation to the UT. This 'ideal' ratio however often tilts in favour of one State or the other, upsetting the balance and creating controversies that often linger. But newly appointed advisor to the UT Chandigarh administration Vijay Kumar Dev hopes to put an end to the bickering. In his maiden interaction with UT babus he took a tough line, sternly telling them to leave their parent cadres behind while serving on deputation in Chandigarh. All well and good, but sources say, the meeting also saw many Haryana cadre IAS officers complain about being 'sidelined' in Chandigarh in terms of portfolios at the expense of UT or Punjab cadre officers. Dev will clearly have to address the 'deeprooted' issues at the earliest if he wishes to see an end to these cadre rivalries.
Deputation blues
WITH 28 IAS officers from the State cadre already serving at the Centre on deputation, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is reluctant to allow more officials to leave the State. Sources say three additional chief secretaries – Tarun Sridhar, Vineet Chawdhry and Upma Chawdhry – have put in requests to the CM’s office for deputation, despite their earlier applications being rejected. The Chief Minister is unlikely to acquiesce to these new requests, say sources. It is clear that the Himachal Pradesh Government is facing a shortage of IAS officers. Perhaps the latest decision was taken when secretary-level IAS officers Ali Raza Rizvi, Sanjay Murthy, Bharat Kera and Amandeep Garg, among a few others, proceeded on Central deputation. This exodus has obviously made matters more difficult. Meanwhile, Singh is now determined to bring back the babus whose deputation term is ending. His determined stand has certainly dashed the deputation dreams hopes of many other babus who were readying their applications, at least for some time.
Rare comeback
HOW fortunes turn! Anand Kulkarni, a senior IAS officer who once headed the protocol, tourism and excise departments during then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s tenure, and had fallen from grace and shunted off to head the nondescript Maharashtra State Finance Corporation (MSFC) is back in the reckoning again. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has resuscitated the once-high flying babu’s career by rehabilitating him in the public works department in the rank of additional chief secretary! In Maharashtra’s babu circles popular lore has it that officials who fall foul of the Government of the day are banished to insignificant positions. That has been the fate of many babus, including Anand. But not all have been able to retrieve lost ground. Rather they tend to fade out. Anand however seems to have Lady Luck on his side. — Dilip Cherian

The number is the result of applying the mathematical operation represented by the symbol to the digits contained within the domain. The solution to each puzzle is arrived at logically and is unique. Dhoni attributes lacklustre new ball bowling for India’s loss
MELBOURNE: Indian captain Mahendra Singh today conceded that his side lost the plot in the early overs with new ball bowlers failing to make a mark in their tense fourwicket loss against Australia in their cricket triseries match here. "It was a good match overall and Mitchell Starc (6/43) bowled really well. Rohit Sharma also played a brilliant innings. But what was crucial was bowling with the new ball. The game was just drifting till the 30th over, but we picked up at the 35th over and once we got reverse swing, we were able to put pressure," Dhoni said after Australia chased down the target of 268 with one overs to go. Australia were cruising at 196 for two at the end of the 35th over, needing just 70-odd runs with eight wickets in hand and 15 overs left but a late fightback by the Indians gave the home side some jitters with the match going down to the penultimate over. Dhoni said he told the players later on that the team needs to execute plans if it wants to win tournaments. "I said I don't care about the result, just keep in mind what happened after the last huddle. That will win us tournaments. We have to keep in mind that from now on, whatever games we play we need to execute," Dhoni said. He also said the toporder batsmen should take more responsibilty so that the bowlers have runs on the board to defend. "All three teams are top sides and it's important for the top order to take extra responsibility and give a total our bowlers are comfortable with it," he said. Asked what could be the defendable score generally in one-day internationals these days, Dhoni said, "A lot depends on conditions, about how the wicket is behaving, specially with drop-in wickets.
Rohit Sharma during his knock of 138 runs against Australia.

ELBOURNE: Rohit Sharma's rollicking century went in vain as Australia survived a few anxious moments before pulling off a tense fourwicket win over India in a cricket Tri-series ODI match. After opener Aaron Finch's confident 96-run knock, Australia were placed comfortably at 216 for two in a chase of 268 but India staged a late comeback by taking three quick wickets. India dismissed Steve Smith (47), Finch and George Bailey (5) in a gap of 23 balls to raise hopes of a turnaround but Brad Haddin (13) and James Faulkner (9) batted sensibly to deny India a dramatic finish. The hosts ended at 269 for six in exactly 49 overs with Faulknar dispatching a Buvneshwar Kumar full-toss to boundary ropes for winning runs. Electing to bat India had posted 267 for eight, built around Sharma's 138-run knock, his sixth One-day hundred. He blasted nine boundaries and four sixes in 139 balls to score his third century against Australia. The Mumbaikar put on 126
runs for the fourth wicket with Suresh Raina (51) even as Australian paceman Mitchell Starc produced a fine bowling display to pick 6-43 in his 10 overs. Australia began their chase in a confident manner with Finch and David Warner (24) putting on 51 for the first wicket. Umesh Yadav broke the stand by dismissing Warner but seasoned Shane Watson lent solidity to the Australian innings with his 41. Yadav denied Finch his sixth ODI hundred by having the batsman caught behind but at that time Australia were only 49 runs away from the victory target. Finch controlled his 127-
ball innings well, hitting five shots to the fence and two over the ropes. Smith (47), Watson and Glenn Maxwell (20) did not score big but their contributions proved crucial for Australia, who had also beaten England in the tri-series opener on Friday. BRIEF SCORES: India 267/8 in 50 overs [Rohit Sharma 138, Suresh Raina 51, Mitchell Starc 6/43] lost to Australia 269/6 in 49 overs [Aaron Finch 96] by four wickets.
Brief verbal spat between Sharma & Warner
MELBOURNE: Tempers flared once again during the second one-dayer of the ongoing cricket tri-series when Indian opener Rohit Sharma and Australian batsman David Warner got involved in a verbal exchange at the MCG. The incident happened in the 23rd over of India's innings, when Sharma pushed a James Faulkner delivery to mid-off and Warner threw the ball towards the striker's end but the ball went through Sharma's legs and
wicket-keeper Brad Haddin missed it as India stole a single. Warner and Sharma were then engaged in a verbal spat for a brief time after the opener ran for an overthrow. In the end, it took the umpires a fair few minutes to separate the two of them. The four-match Test series, which preceded the tri-series, was also marred by incidents of altercation between Indian and Australian players, including Virat Kohli, Warner and Mitchell Johnson.
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc scalped six wickets against India.
India will take on England in their second match on Tuesday and again square off against Australia on January 26. Australia's chase looked on course but things went awry in the 40th over with the loss of Smith, who swatted a slower short-delivery from Mohammed Shami straight to R Ashwin at mid-wicket. It sparked a mini-collapse as Finch was dismissed by Yadav in the very next over and Ashwin had Bailey stumped. Shami hobbled off with a possible knee-injury in the 47th over and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1-44) gleefully accepted a lobbed up return catch to dismiss Glenn Maxwell (20). It looked like a closer finish than expected but Faulkner and Haddin held their nerves to romp home. Earlier, India had a horrendous start as they were reduced to 59 for three in 12.5 overs. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (2) was removed in the first over of the innings itself, caught at second slip off Starc. Ajinkya Rahane (12) had been listed to bat at number four in the team-sheets but he came out at the fall of the first wicket. He put on 30 runs for the 2nd wicket with Rohit.
India, South Africa biggest challenger to Aus in WC: Chappell M
ELBOURNE: Not too pleased with a couple of selection decisions in the Australian cricket squad for the ODI World Cup, former captain Ian Chappell said the home side will find its toughest competition in India and South Africa during the marquee event starting February 14. "Australia's biggest challenges will come from South Africa and India, with New Zealand a dark horse under
the aggressive leadership of Brendon McCullum," Chappell wrote in his column for 'The Daily Telegraph'. "Australia is superior to all but India's powerful line-up in batting and the pace bowling is the equal of South Africa's talented triumvirate and better than the rest. Its fielding, which will be important on Australia's bigger grounds, is athletic and includes some strong arms," he explained.
Chappell said spin bowling remains a concern for the Australians, who decided not to include a specialist leg-spinner for the mega-event. "I only have two quibbles with the chosen World Cup squad of 15: the non-selection of a leg-spinner and Steve Smith not being vice-captain to take over in a situation where Michael Clarke doesn't make the fitness deadline," Chappell said.
"The one area where Australia can be bettered is in spin bowling. As the summer heats up and the pitches are subjected to more wear and tear, this may become a factor and Australia's Achilles heel against spin is its biggest concern going into this World Cup," he said. Chappell said the selectors should have also given the captaincy to newlyappointed Test skipper Steve Smith. "George Bailey doesn't
make Australia's best side, which means if Clarke breaks down during a game then (Test captain Steve) Smith will take over the captaincy. Why wouldn't Smith then remain as captain of the side in Clarke's continued absence? "By choosing Bailey, the selectors may create a situation where, during the World Cup campaign, the captaincy could resemble a game of musical chairs," he opined.

Barefoot runner loses time after competing with shoes
By Neil Joshi
MUMBAI: Supriya Patil daughter of a farmer from Uran, a distant place away from Mumbai brought up her maiden third place win in yesterday's Mumbai marathon in the 21 kilometres run. This win for her was unique as she was competing in a half marathon wearing shoes for the first time. Running was introduced by Patil's coach Dilip Patil who got her enrolled in a local gymkhanna in Uran itself. However, she started practicing running barefooted at a very early age and didn't wear shoes for long distance road running. “I never wore shoes for running a marathon. This is the first time I did so. I was feeling quite uncomfortable in shoes as I had sustained a minor injury few days ago and that was hurting my feet. Hadn'n that injury occurred, I would have continued running barefooted. I guess, that is my comfort zone,” said Supriya who clocked one hour 26 minutes 48 seconds in yesterday's half marathon. However, it is only for the marathon that she abandons the pair of shoes and wears them while competing in other athletic events. “Where I stay there was’nt any ground for me to train. So I use to run on the road. But when I started competing in other running events, I used shoes,” said the 23-yearold girl whose last best was three years ago where she stood third. She also participated in the full marathon last year, but due to lack of competition, she chose the shorter version of the run.

Like always, it was the elite runners, which were the attention seekers as they ran at a constant pace. It was a calculated move at the 30 kilometre mark by the top three who separated from the lot of 10 and created a huge gap on the return after they crossed the Bandra Worli sea-link. Aware of the hilly climb at Peddar Road and as the heat caught on, a decline of speed was noticed. However, Abera took a sprint in the final three kilometres in the hope of

However, I am quite happy with my performance and I will utilize my earning to build a house in my hometown,” said Abera. Mekash who won it for the second consecutive time said it was the heat which played the spoiler. “The run on the bridge took a lot of effort, which eventually led to slight cramping of my muscles. But I stood my ground and completed the race,” said Dinknesh.

UMBAI: OP Jaisha, Lalita Babar and Sudha Singh achieved something which very few female marathon runners from India have achieved. Firstly, they showed a sharp improvement in their timings with Jaisha and Sudha ending up eighth and ninth respectively and then they also booked a place for the IAAF World Championship to be held in Beijing later this year. OP Jaisha running her debut marathon in Mumbai notched impressive timing of two hours 37 minutes 26 seconds while it was Lalita Babar who was considered slow off the blocks last year, found her feet and improved her timing by a splendid 12 minutes to finish second in the elite Indian standings and ninth overall. Sudha Singh who with Lalita Babar won a medal at the Asian Games showed

this they would also travel for the New York marathon which has been sponsored by Tata Consultancy Services which will help them compete at an international stage.
I just hope that from next year, the marathon starts at least an hour earlier. It is just too hot for us to run and this opinion is shared by all the runners – Indian and foreigners. We would see a significant difference of at least two minutes and that can have a good impact on our confidence and we can take this momentum to other events also.

With this performance, the Kerala born Jaisha broke the 19-year-old national record earlier held by Vally Sathyabhama. “I was aware of her record and I am happy I surpassed it,” she said. Babar who is a steeplechase runner said that it was her belief in her coach Sresarev which helped her in improving her timings. “I am not a marathoner, I run steeplechase. But we believe in our coach. Even in Asian Games, we won a medal because of our belief in him. I have improved by 12 minutes, so I feel good about it,” said Babar.

ELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer begin their quest for five Australian Open titles while Serena Williams is chasing her 19th Grand Slam crown in the year's first major starting today. World number one Djokovic looms as the player to beat in the men's draw having won four of the last seven Australian editions, and he holds an affinity with the hardcourts in Melbourne. "There are so many players who are contenders to win the title," said the Serb. "Considering the success that I had in my career in this tournament gives me enough reason and confidence to believe I can go far." While Djokovic has never lost a final in Melbourne, Federer will be again be the sentimental favourite at 33 years old, pursuing his 18th major title having not won one since Wimbledon 2012. "I would hope that over the years I've always improved. I think I'm serving more consistent and stronger than I ever have," Federer said. "I definitely think the racquet has helped me with that

Advani trounces Sitwala to annex National Billiards title K
OLKATA: Indian ace Pankaj Advani routed his PSPB colleague and 'friend' Dhruv Sitwala 5-0 in a flawless display of potting en route to his seventh Senior National Billiards Championship at the Bengal Rowing Club. The holder of 12 world titles in various categories faced some resistance in the first frame when Sitwala posted 28 but thereafter it was a one-way traffic as the Bangalore lad posted successive breaks of 150 and 153 for a clean sweep. "I was feeling on top of the world after posting back to back 150s because it does not happen very often. I'm extremely happy to produce my best game in the final," Advani said annexing his first national billiards title since 2012. "Those two 150s in the second and third frames really put the match away from him. It would have been a totally different game had he won the first frame." Sitwala's best came in the fourth frame when he posted a break of 81 but Advani was a notch higher as he scored 150 with ease before sealing the issue in the fifth with finesse. "It's the first tournament of the year. I'm happy with the way it folded for me. I
had a few tough games in the knockout stages, I'm extremely happy to come all the way and qualify for international tournaments." Advani also felt happy for his friend Sitwala to emerge second in the country. "He has snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the previous round and performed extremely well under pressure. I'm happy to see him back where he belongs -- in the top of the rankings." "We share a lot of moments together tour, or any international tournament. We're quite friendly off the table. That he's praising me after losing 0-5 speaks volumes about his character, he's a true gentleman."
India's Rio berth was crucial for longevity of HHIL By Saumojyoti S Choudhury
N
EW DELHI: Australian hockey team captain Mark Knowles feels India's qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics was "crucial" for the longevity of the Hero Hockey India League (HHIL), the third edition of which will begin on Janauary 22 in Bhubaneswar. Knowles believes, even
though it turned out to be a success, the first two editions of the HHIL was just the build up and the real challenge for the organisers from here on is to sustain the league. "The HHIL is very popular back home in Australia. There are about 21-22 Australian players who are playing in the league, so every match is keenly followed back home. There is a lot of support back home for the league," he said. "But what was crucial for
the league was India's qualification for the Rio Olympics. It was an important part for the sustainability of the league because it means there will be more fan following, more sponsors and support for league," Knowles, who plays for Jaypee Punjab Warriors, told PTI in an interview from Chandigarh. Knowles, a two-time World Cup winner and also the recipient of this year's International Hockey Federation
(FIH) Player of the Year award, has high regards for the present Indian team but feels the Sardar Singh-led side lacks consistency to excel at the higher stage. "The Indian team is getting better and better with every passing day. In the last couple of years they have become stronger. They won the Asian Games, won silver at the Commonwealth Games and finished fourth at the Champions Trophy," he said.

release funds for Olympic preparation,” said Sresarav. The coach said that he may not be liked by many due to his approach but the attitude in India prevents girls with potential to back-off due to wrong influence of people who aren't interested in competition. “These two girls are toppers. They should compete in the Olympics. There are so many motivated girls who are been demotivated,” he said. The coach who was also impressed with the performance of his wards yesterday said their timings would have been better had the race started early. “An early start
would not only help the Indian athletes but also the foreign ones. You get better timings as the sun is not up and the weather is conducive. Today, it was quite warm in the second half of the marathon. This demand of a time change should be seriously introspected if they want the game and timings to improve,” he added. A furious Nikolai also said he was ready to throw in his papers if the demand for the athletes are not met. “If they don’t want me then I am ready to leave if it helps them solve the problem or else I will just have to pay from own pocket.”
