So on Thursday morning, the doctors came down to Mumbai and met with the director of the Directorate of Medical Education, Dr. H. Pravin Shingare, and the Medical Education Minister, Jitendra Awhad. “We had a meeting with them to discuss our problems. They have assured us in writing that the needful will be done. They have promised a minimum of 30
more guards to be posted at GMC and also about 30 CCTV cameras to be installed. Though they have not given us any timeline for doing this, they have promised that it will be done at the earliest. The moment we got this in writing, we called off the strike,” said Dr. Makdum. Around 300 doctors from GMC, Nagpur went on strike after Dr. Amit Baheti, a second year resident doctor in the medicine department, was assaulted in the general ward by relatives of a patient who had been brought to the hospital in
a serious condition. The Central MARD, too, had condemned this incident and had put forth a set demands including the implementation of the Doctors' Protection Act, complete overhaul of security arrangements and the presence of armed guards in sensitive areas like the ICU, labour ward. Dr. Baheti did not suffer serious physical injuries, but was traumatised by the incident. He is on leave now, staying with his parents, informed Dr. Makdum.

he Kandivli police on Wednesday registered a case of rioting and trespassing against acting BJP Member of Parliament Gopal Shetty and 30 others after they allegedly threatened a Kandivlibased property developer. The police have not made any arrests in the case yet. Although the complainant has said in his complaint that Shetty was present at the spot and threat ened him, the police are verifying his contention. According to M. Pandarmise, senior police inspector of Kandivali police station, complainant L akhmendra Khurana had approached the Kandivali police after 30 people barged into his office and threatened him. The buil der claimed that the mob including Gopal Shetty beat him, his son, his partner and his watchman before leaving. The officers said that the pri-
vate developer had bought the pro perty of Gayatri Apartment in Kan divli (West) from another builder for redevelopment where 27 tenants had been staying. Khurana had then shifted the families to a temporary building and paid the r ent of ayear. However, during this time the building was listed as dilapidated. The tenants claimed that the builder refused to give them possession of their flats again. Khurana in his complaint claimed that
the tenants approached the MP and asked him to pressurise him into returning the flats by force. “Shetty has not disputed the complaint of the builder about his presence at the spot but we are checking this. We will record the statement of Shetty after it is proved that he was present at the spot,” said Pandarmise. On Thursday, the tenants of the Gayatri Apartments had approached the Kandivali police in favour of Shetty asking the police to register a case of cheating against Khurana. “The tenants have claimed that Khurana did not give them anything in writing about returning their property or giving them a temporary house until the redevelopment is complete. We have accepted their written complaint and are investigating that aspect as well,” said Pandarmise. When contacted, Gopal Shetty’s spokesperson said that Shetty supported the tenants.
M
ukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, on Thursday said the crisis in Iraq will lead to higher fuel prices which in turn will raise inflation, says a PTI report. "In an inter-connected world like the one we are living in today, what's happening around the world affects everywhere. "The geopolitical crisis in the Middle East, especially the ongoing one in Iraq will increase crude oil prices which in turn will spike inflation in our economy," Ambani said at the 106th annual general meeting of Indian Merchants Chamber on Thursday. Crude oil prices have gone up by four per cent as the civil war has engulfed Iraq and some analysts believe that if the crisis worsens it could jack up India's oil import bill by over US $20 billion this fiscal, at close to US $200 billion.
Late Syedna’s kin agree to SSC KIDS TO LOSE A YEAR? speedy succession trial Continued from pg 1 «

H
alf-brother and son of late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, spiritual head of millionstrong Dawoodi Bohra community, mutually agreed before Bombay High Court on Thursday to have an 'expeditious trial' of their dispute over appointment of Dai-al-Mutlaq or spiritual head. Justice Gautam Patel fixed July 17 for pre-trial directions while acting on a suit filed by late Syedna's half-brother Khuzaima Qutbuddin (73) that contested the appointment of the Syedna’s son as his successor. Qutbuddin (73), who sought relief including entry to Saifi Manzil, the house of the community leader, has filed a 700-page suit asking the court to restrain Syedna Saifuddin (70) to act as the Dai-alMutlaq, reports PTI. In reply to the
suit, defendant Syedna Saifuddin filed a detailed 494-page affidavit on April 23, 2014. The half-brother, in his suit, has claimed he is the real successor as he was the Mazoon (second-incommand) and the late Syedna too was once the Mazoon and become the head of the community after his predecessor's death. He said after Burhanuddin became the new Syedna, he had publicly appointed his younger brother, Khuzaima Qutbuddin, as his Mazoon and privately anointed him as his successor, reports PTI. While for majority of the members of the community, there is absolutely no doubt over the succession of Syedna Saifuddin's succession as the next Syedna, the followers of Qutbuddin consider him as the rightful successor. They said that he has been late Syedna's closest aide over the years.
Speaking to the ADC, Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, State Board, Mumbai Division said: “We have already started releasing the results. Students should not worry about the online admission form filling process as the state board will be forwarding the complete marks of each and every student to the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) for enabling admissions.”

T
he Mumbai Police Traffic Division’s special drive against bikers on the JJ flyover from February onwards has fetched positive results. Around 90 per cent of the bikers who earlier took the flyover are now avoiding it due to the tough measures employed by the Pydhoni and Colaba traffic police departments on either side. There is also a special drive being initiated thrice a week to stop bikers from getting onto the flyover between 12 midnight and 5 am, and this has further reduced the number of two-wheeler related accidents. A police inspector from Pydhoni police station said, “Rash driving on the flyover has dropped considerably. We note down the names and addresses of the offenders apart from levying fines and punishments.” The ban on two-wheelers enforced by the traffic department in April 2010 was over the number of accidents caused by its ‘curvy’ shape. However, this did not deter the daredevils from trying their luck, and over the past eight years, there have been more than 70 deaths and hundreds have been injured. But even now, bikers try their luck, attempting to dodge the police at both ends. They include pillion drivers comprising women and children! The JJ flyover was built to bridge

the time gap between school of architecture and hospital, a nightmare of illegally-parked cars, bikes, handcarts, jaywalkers and hawkers. It has succeeded admirably, in that the journey between the two points is absolutely easy and takes about three minutes for four wheelers. Underneath the JJ flyover, it is another story. The nightmare is much worse than it ever was, and a journey from Chakala Junction on its south end to JJ on its north side, could take as much as 40 minutes! The distance of 2.4 km (the same as JJ flyover) traverses five junctions, starting with Dr Iqbal Chowk junction opposite JJ Hospital in the north, to Yusuf Meher Ali Road, Minaara Masjid, Bhendi Bazaar, ending at Chakala Junction opposite Manish Market in the south. Each junction has traffic signals. At night after 10 pm, there is a surge of two-wheeler traffic on the 2.4 km route, reflecting the hope that there is less traffic below the bridge, obviating the need to break laws. This is usually hopeless optimism. The whole area is only slightly less choc-a-bloc during the night as it is during the day. The time taken to travel the road below by a two-wheeler during business hours is easily over 30 minutes and sometimes it takes even longer. Continued on pg 5
Record of penalties
From March 1 to April 20, this year, the Pydhonie traffic police have charged 4,070 bikers for taking the JJ flyover, while from May till now they have penalised more than 1,000 bikers for entering the JJ flyover. In contrast, they seem to have been unable to do much about traffic violations below the structure! Around 1,400 bikers were penalised in March alone by the Colaba Traffic Division and around 164 paid fines till April 20 for violating traffic norms. From May, around 500 bikers were penalised. The checks against bikers was stepped up after February 26, when two young men were killed after ramming into a car on the flyover.
THERE’S A REASON WHY BIKERS STILL TRY THEIR LUCK ON THE JJ FLYOVER AND WHY PAYING THE FINE IS CONSIDERED LIKE A TOLL!

A policeman speaks
Pics: Azad Shrivastav | ADC
Talking to ADC, a constable attached to Pydhoni Traffic Police Station, Jahangir Mulani said, “In actuality, if we can enforce the law to the fullest, then there wouldn’t be a case of traffic snarls anywhere in this area. Locals are flouting the rules and there is a large number of signal violations. At various times, we penalise them but they end up repeating the offence. Most of the time, groups from the community come forward to rescue them, hurling abuses at us along with threats of dire consequences.” Another constable from Colaba said, “Our jurisdiction is around 10 per cent of the entire JJ flyover including areas on and below the bridge. People have no fear of the police. “And those traveling with their families are the worst, while often it is the women who are defiant.”
Ramzan is coming up!
A shop owner’s POV
The whole area is business dominated, and most of the shops and gala owners have their own cars. They park right outside the shops. This is the view of one of them, “So what’s wrong in that, we are paying charges to traffic cops whenever they are acting against us.” Illegal encroachments are rampant. They claim they are paying 'hafta' to the authorities, including civic and police. Most of the cars parked on both sides of the road belong to local residents who have no fear of the entire traffic department.
On June 30, the holy month of Ramzan will begin. During this time, from JJ signal to Chakala junction the number of encroachments on the already congested pavements will double with mostly kurta-pyjama sellers. The 20-metre road, now reduced to 10 metres, with become even narrower. Shop owners will extend their shops, the road leading to Bohri Mohalla, Minara Masjid and Phydhoni will experience hectic pedestrian and shopping activity and even restaurants in these areas will add five to six dining tables for the extra buck. Get ready for more bikers on the JJ flyover!
A traffic warden says
Dr. Sunil G Kamat (67) is a retired pathologist. More bravely, he is a traffic warden, having volunteered for the position. He says, “The problem below the bridge will be solved in 15 days if traffic cops act against these nuisance makers. They will stop automatically if traffic police acts and deploys additional police force to carry out their task without duress. Everyone violates rules below the bridge -- youths, women and senior citizens.”
They call us “Pandu”!
Many of the constables attached to both the Pydhoni and Colaba traffic division revealed that, whenever the police stop bikers and drivers for traffic violations, they are subjected to abuse. Sometimes they are called by the pejorative “Pandu”. Even women traffic constables deployed on the bridge are not spared this behaviour.
IPC 353 difficult to impose
IPC 353 stands for assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, but often, when bikers abuse or threaten the traffic cops, attempts to apply this section come to nought. Political interference and intervention by community leaders are brought to bear upon the police to prevent them from booking offenders under this section.

‘Procedural delay amounts to murder’ File cases against govt officials, medical staffers who delay organ donation process, says Khadse By Vishnudas Sheshrao
C
riminal cases should be filed against government officials and medical staffers who delay the organ donation process by omission or commissions, said Eknath Khadse, the Lead of Opposition in the Assembly, in an exclusive interview with the ADC. Chennai's efforts to save the life of a Mumbai girl caught the imagination of the authorities in Mumbai. Several law makers, political leaders and the medical fraternity are overwhelmed with this radical achievement. Khadse himself was advised a kidney transplant last year, but he had a tough time going through the paper work. His wife, Mandakini, volunteered to donate one of her kidneys, but they hit a road block. “I was shocked when I was told of a rule which says that the wife is not a blood relative (of the husband),â€? said Khadse. He finally went to Sri Lanka for the transplant procedure. Khadse said to emulate Chennai is impossible in the near future. As progressive as Maharashtra may be, it is still far behind in the organ donation. In the past, donors were classified into two groups – blood relatives and other donors. The paper work for blood relatives was less taxing when compared to other donors. For other donors, there had to be a complete police verification and a third party inquiry recorded on camera. He said, “It was very troubled time. Continued from pg 3 ÂŤ
Many bikers claim that faulty traffic management is one of the prime reasons that they try the upper route, risking fines if they are caught. The huge number of encroachments on the pavements below throw all of the pedestrian traffic on to the road, making it mentally tough for bikers to manoeuvre through the traffic. What makes matters worse is the system of parking which is carried out on that stretch of the road. The traffic

BJP leader Eknath Khadse Every time they asked for some document or the other, I felt like a victim of rules. It was very time consuming as the committee which approves the organ donation at the state level meets once in four months, instead of monthly. Khadse emphasised that rules are are meant for the betterment of society. However, in this case, rules are taking its toll on society, so they must be amended. “In Sri Lanka, documentation and the transplant, which would take about eight to 18 months in Mumbai, was done within a week. He added, “In my opinion, any government authority or medical staffer who, knowingly or unknowingly, delays procedures should be booked with criminal negligence which amounts to murder. Indirectly, he is taking a life.

election related work is carried out unhindered. Meanwhile, in a related development, state party spokesperson Madhav Bhandari raised objections to some contesting candidates in Pune division Graduates' constituency advocating that village sarpanch and non-national bank passbooks could be used as voter identity proof. He said that in many cases the village sarpanch is least educated. Bhandari demanded that the earlier ECI order stipulating requirement of anyone of the 14 documents to establish voter identity should continue.

duces the road virtually to a single lane for north and south bound traffic. The area is a business district comprising mainly of shops, while a huge number of trucks bringing supplies also park their vehicles alongside the main route and block a vast portion of the road. It is true that motorists, pedestrians and even bikers suffer. But perhaps the worst off are the 'guardians’ of traffic along the route. They are at the receiving end from the local residents and the businessmen for not carrying out any action on the illegal parking in the area. Many personnel deployed in that area felt that they needed police protection in order to carry on their duty without any pressure or any 'forced' intervention by the locals. And also arraigned against them are the signal jumpers, the lane cutters, the jaywalkers and their ilk.

Victory for workers Contractual workers in MBMC to be paid as per minimum wages By Suresh Golani
A
s many as 200 contractual workers attached to the Tree Authority in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) are in a joyous mood. Reason: The MBMC in its capacity as principal employer has finally agreed to ensure that the contractual employees are being paid their wages according to the Minimum Wages Act. The Shramjeevi Kaamgar Rayat Sanghatna (SKRS), a trade union floated by Vasai MLA Vivek Pandit, has been battling on behalf of the contractual workers for the past two years. The constant struggle in the form of silent agitations and strikes by the SKRS tasted success a few months ago when 1,800 workers engaged in the Health Department started getting their wages as per the stated rule. However, for the 200 private employees recruited in the Tree Authority, getting minimum wages remained a distant dream. “Getting paid by the guidelines laid

n an apparent snub to some senior Shiv Sena leaders, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis stated that the BJP will only accept the word of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray as final. He said that what Uddhav Thackeray says will be treated as the Sena stand and only based on that will the BJP react. Speaking to newspersons after chairing the state BJP core committee meeting, Fadnavis revealed that the state party will demand the induction of party MLA Pankaja Munde-Palve in the union cabinet, in place of her late father Gopinath Munde. She has also been inducted
Devendra Fadnavis in the state BJP core committee. Fadnavis stated that Munde's eldest daughter will soon be given a major role to play in the core committee. Sources in the BJP added that the state party unit would
urge the central leadership to make an exception for Pankaja. However, the family has not made any decision or communicated any views to the party leadership. He further clarified that there was no difference with the Sena over the post of Chief Minister and over seat sharing. The issue of seat sharing is to be discussed at the meeting of the Mahayuti which is slated to be held after June 21, added Fadnavis. Of late, senior Sena leaders like Manohar Joshi, Sanjay Raut and others have been projecting Uddhav Thackeray as the chief ministerial candidate. State BJP leaders also discussed the political equations with the Sena after the
demise of Gopinath Munde at the meeting of the core committee. Late Munde acted as the communication bridge between the Sena and BJP. A fact which was also admitted to by the Sena leaders, who now argue that there is a communication gap with the BJP following the demise of Munde. However, the state BJP leadership appears to downplay the Sena bid to expand its party base in the state with its slogan “My Maharashtra...Saffron Maharashtra”. State BJP leaders, while speaking to the ADC on conditions of anonymity, stated that all the alliance partners are free to strive hard to expand their own party presence in the state.
State unit chief of Mayawati's party says the NCP is spreading false tales of an alliance with BSP in order to presurise the Congress for a profitable deal in coming Assembly polls
he Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) yesterday alleged that the NCP and its president Sharad Pawar are playing dirty tricks to pressurise the Congress and extract maximum from the alliance partner. Speaking to reporters, BSP state unit president Vilas Garud said, “There is lot of speculation since the past few days about Pawar meeting our president Mayawati and talks of a possible alliance for the forthcoming Assembly elections. I want to make it clear that this is a rumour being planted in the media by the NCP leaders. This is being done in order to secure a plum deal with Congress in the state Assembly elections.“The NCP is planting rumours in media because it wants to pressurise its ally and get a good deal for itself in the bargain. Mayawati has made her stand very clear, that all 288 assembly seats will be fought by the BSP without entering into any alliance. Mayawati has categorically told me that she has not even spoke to Pawar on phone and meeting him is out of the question. They are only trying to mislead people by using our

The MBMC has also assured that it would try and reimburse payment arrears towards wage differences. Besides the minimum wages, the contract workers as per the various Labour Law provisions are to be provided with benefits such as Overtime, Bonus, Weekly Holidays, ESI facility, Bio-Metric Attendance.

hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray tried to downplay attempts by the party to project him as its chief ministerial candidate while speaking on the sidelines of the party's 48th foundation day at Rangasharda in Bandra (W). He remarked that he did not have any personal dreams. The Sena president further replied that all the constituent parties of the Mahayuti shall be consulted and the chief ministerial candidate shall be decided. Thackeray urged the media to end the debate on the issue. However, earlier while addressing the party cadre at a closed-door conclave he did claim that the chief minister of Maharashtra “shall be ours”. Later replying to queries, he said that the BJP had not made any demands for increased allocation of seats. On the issue of Sena bid to expand party base, Thackeray remarked that attempts to expand the party base does not mean breaking the alliance. Earlier addressing the party cadre, he had said that although the Modi wave will help in the victory, Thackeray cautioned party workers not to get complacent. He urged
Uddhav & Aditya Thackeray the party workers not to pay attention to what rival parties are doing and get cracking in ensuring Mahayuti government comes to power in the state. The Sena president claimed that the party was leading in the game of power politics. He said that the party has grown largely due to loyal party workers and added that there was no room in the party for rebels. Commenting upon his development manifesto, Thackeray stated that the party was in favour of constructing the coastal road in Mumbai without affecting the Koliwadas (fishermen colonies). Cluster development without impact assessment? HC asks Urban Development Dept to file affidavit in reply to PIL By Philip Varghese
A
n 'Impact Assessment Study' to determine the infrastructural needs of an area is essential before implementing the cluster development in that place. This was claimed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court on Thursday, which has challenged Maharashtra government's scheme to permit cluster development of areas in and around Mumbai city. Under this scheme, additional Floor Space Index (FSI) is given for such areas where it is proposed to undertake cluster development. The state has proposed to allow such development in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Mira-Bhayandar, Virar, Dombivali, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Pal-
ghar, Dahanu and Jawahar. All the corporations in these places have been made respondents. However, according to the PIL filed Dattatray Dhond, a resident of Thane, “Before implementing such a scheme, it is necessary for the authorities to conduct an 'Impact Assessment Study' to determine the infrastructural needs of these areas. With cluster development, necessary infrastructure such as roads, houses, gardens, open spaces, greenery, markets, schools, hospitals, amenities, shops and commercial establishments are required to be set up.” The PIL read, “I am not against the cluster development, but I want systematic development which would also fulfil the infrastructural needs of the areas where such projects are being under-
taken. The city limits could be extended up to a particular place till the planned infrastructure is developed in the area. In the next two decades, in Navi Mumbai, a population of 28 lakh would be included. Hence the load on existing infrastructure would increase. It is, therefore, necessary to plan additional infrastructure before allowing cluster developments in this city.” Based on this, the Bombay High Court bench headed by Justice A.S. Oka, on Thursday, asked the Urban Development Department of the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit in reply to the PIL, which challenges the state's scheme to allow cluster development of areas in and around Mumbai, by July 20. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

A
t a time when the Maharashtra Police constables recruitment drive has come under severe criticism, there are also candidates who are finding loopholes and shortcuts for getting selected in the ongoing recruitment drive. This was brought to light by the Vakola police on Thursday when a 23-yearold youth was caught with bogus documents by an alert constable at the Kalina Police Training camp. The arrested accused, Ramashankar Jaglal Saroj, is a commerce graduate and had appeared for the physical test on behalf of his neighbour Nitin Shivaji Kute. But during the document verification, a cop realised a goofup in the picture of the candidate and took the accused to the Vakola police station. Mumbai police guard Nusli Wadia’s office M
umbai police have provided security at the office of industrialist Nusli Wadia following threat calls from fugitive underworld don Ravi Pujari, police said today. A police contingent has been deployed outside Wadia International Centre at Lower Parel since yesterday. The deployment would be during duty hours alone, sources said, adding that threat perception would be reviewed before providing personal security to the industrialist. “Policemen have been deployed outside the Wadias' office. No security has been provided to any individual. We will review threat perception and then decide if there is a need to provide personal security to anybody,” Additional Police Commissioner (Central Region) Madhukar Pandey said. Nusli Wadia's elder son Ness is embroiled in a bitter feud with his former girlfriend and Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, who has accused the Bombay Dyeing group scion of abuse and molestation during an IPL match on May 30. The 39-year-old actress had filed a police complaint against Ness Wadia (44) on June 12 night alleging he had molested her at Wankhede stadium during an IPL match
between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings. Ness and Zinta continue to be coowners of IPL team Kings XI Punjab despite their break up a few years ago. Based on her complaint, Marine Drive police station have registered an FIR and is probing the allegations. The matter turned murkier when the Wadia group filed a police complaint on Tuesday claiming they had received threatening calls and a text message from underworld don Ravi Pujari warning that their “business will be in trouble” if the actress was harassed. Two personal secretaries to Nusli Wadia were said to have received five calls and a threatening text message from Pujari on Monday following which an FIR was registered and the case handed over to the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch for probe. Meanwhile, police have recorded the statement of IPL's Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman in connection with the complaint lodged by Zinta. In her written complaint, Zinta had alleged that Ness Wadia had publicly humiliated her on several occasions, including once at an IPL auction where Raman was present.

wing to the pass-the-buck game being played between the planning authority – MMRDA and the service provider – Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the Uttan-Gorai belt has become a hot-bed for illegal construction activities posing a serious threat to the eco-sensitive region. Recently concerted into a 'Tourism Zone' by the state government authorities, the scenic coastal region is being exploited by the local mafia
which has been involved in all sorts of constructions including illegal tenements and row-houses. Alarmed by the massive illegal constructions across the twin-city, deputy municipal commissioner Vilas Dhage had recently issued show cause notices to all six ward officers seeking an Action Taken Report (ATR) on complaints against the mounting number of illegal activities. However, the ward officials seem to be unnerved by the notices and have continued to turn a nelson’s eye towards the illegal activi-
ties. “I have received complaints against illegal chawls being constructed in the Dongri area of Uttan and have already directed the concerned ward officer and the demolition chief to take immediate action and submit a report,” confirmed Dhage. Villages including Gorai, Manori, Uttan, Dongri, Tarodi, Chowk and parts of Morva, which are predominantly inhabited by East Indians, now come under the 'Tourism Zone'. Can an MP facing rape charge become a minister? U
nion Minister Nihalchand Meghwal is not going. He will stay put in Narendra Modi's cabinet. The BJP is extending strong support to the minister. It is not only the Congress party that is asking for his exit. It looks like, across the country, there is a perception he has to resign. There are rape charges against him, but evidently not many know about it. What brought the matter to public notice was the summons issued by the court to appear in the rape case. There was a huge reaction to this court order. It is a fact that as per Parliamentary rules, only after criminal charges are proved in court, a member can be disqualified. There are a large number of members in Parliament with a criminal record. As per the existing rule, the minister can be asked to go only if a court convicts him. What stands against the minister is that the victim of rape has named him. A minister who is directly involved in administration should be seen as clean. Just imagine what happens if Nihalchand stands up in the House to answer a question or make a speech. Each time he gets up, there is likely to be an uproar. When our MPs and ministers are themselves involved in such heinous crime like rape, people begin to lose faith in Democracy. The BJP will be in office for five more years. It could pick up minus points during the first few weeks of its rule — thinking it would not be a threat to its survival. During the course of its term in office, however, the minus points add up and will have an impact on its chances to continue for another term.
T
HE UPA still cannot accept the fact that it has been thrown out of government bag and baggage. Given a chance, it turns vicious, making a fool of itself. The controversies over the choice of Smriti Irani as Minister for Human Resources Development and of former Telecom Regularity Authority of India (TRAI) chairman Nripendra Misra as Principal Secretary to the prime minister "are devoid of substance and a waste of time," said The Economic Times (May 30). It said: "Many people have tried to argue that a minimal level of certified education should be made an eligibility condition to be elected to a legislature. The framers of the Constitution rejected this argument for good reason. Many leaders have built their political career dropping out of college. This does not make them any the less public-spirited or capable of upholding the larger public interest while taking policy decisions."
Innovative ideas The Times of India (May 26) felt that even before being sworn in as prime minister, Modi had demonstrated "a propensity for out-ofbox thinking by inviting SAARC heads of state to his swearing in ceremony." The paper praised Modi for two reasons: First, he moved away from the "belligerent rhetoric of his election campaign and secondly, from shifting away from the stuffy protocol of the UPA years." "Indeed," said the paper, "it's a recognition that India's destiny is bound-up with that of its neighbours." Business Line (May 31) said most striking among the listed ten priorities are the promise to build more confidence in the bureaucracy to take decisions, to be innovative with ideas and to work freely. "This" said the paper "is especially important in an environment that encourages the bureaucracy to play safe, whether by passing the buck or deferring decisions." It said: Only an empowered bureaucracy can implement policies in a time-bound manner." Reminding readers that in Gujarat, Modi has been credited with allowing officials to think out of the box, the paper said Modi "will be keenly watched whether he can use his parliamentary majority to achieve the same at the Centre now..." Deccan Herald (May 22) advised Modi that "the most important tasks before the government are in the economic field" and "it has to contain inflation and bring it down to give re-

But it also simultaneously advised that "while the economic agenda may dominate attention, social sector development is vital for economic growth and welfare of the people (and, therefore) Health and Education are most important in this respect." The New Indian Express (May 22) said that what underscores the congratulatory messages Modi has received "is the fact that no country can afford to ignore India, the largest democracy and an emerging power." Like many other papers, The Express too emphasised the need for Modi "to redeem his prom-
2,000 bed super-specialty hospital in each of India’s 626 districts." Said the paper: "A crack down on India's grey economy has long been overdue and the time has come to hold it to account with a firm grip." The Asian Age (May 29) said "in the absence of reliable estimates, alarmist figures suggesting astronomical sums of money abroad have taken hold of the Indian psyche" but the fact that the government has taken cognisance of the subject shows "it has scored a major political point." But for all that, continued the paper, "it is natural to be cynical about what the SIT can achieve."
Remarkable success
The Telegraph (May 29) said that since "needs and visions" of Modi and Nawaz Sharif matched, "the first meeting of the two countries' premiers turned out to be a remarkable success" and "the handshakes and smiles have been precisely what they were intended to do - push the Indian and Pakistani establishments out of the corners they have sequestered themselves." In turning the spotlight back on economy, the paper said, "Mr. Sharif may even have achieved a minor win over Modi." Economic & Political Weekly (May 24) took a very negative line, as could be expected from the Left media. To start with the weekly said that "Narendra Modi has won a massive M.V. Kamath victory, but his ascendance does not portend ise by focusing on economic development by positive change." Hitting at the BJP, left, right kick-starting the economy which has been and centre, the journal said that "the Modi campaign was organised around the message suffering from policy paralysis." BSTRACT sound is called Saut-e-Sarmad by the Sufis; all space is filled with it. The vibrations of this sound are too fine to be either audible or visible to the material ears or eyes, since it is even difficult for the eyes to see the form and colour of he ethereal vibrations on the external plane. It was the Saut-eSarmad, the sound of the abstract plane, which Prophet Mohammad heard in the cave of Ghar-e-Hira when he became lost in his divine ideal. The Holy Qua’an refers to this sound in the words, ‘Be! and all became.’ Moses heard this very sound on Mount Sinai, when in communion with God; and the same word was audible to Christ when absorbed in his Heavenly Father in the wilderness. Lord Shiva heard the same Anahad Nada during his samadhi in the cave of the Himalayas. The flute of Krishna is symbolic of the same sound. This sound is the source of all revelation to the Masters, to whom it is revealed from within; it is because of this that they know and teach one and the same truth. The Sufi knows of the past, present and future, and about all things in life, by being able to know the direction of sound. Every aspect
of one’s being in which sound manifests has a peculiar effect upon life, for the activity of vibrations has a special effect in every direction. The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe. Whoever has followed the strains of this sound has forgotten all earthly distinctions and differences, and has reached that goal of truth in which all the Blessed Ones of God unite. Space is within the body as well as
MATTER & SPIRIT around it; in other words the body is in the space and the space is in the body. This being the case, the sound of the abstract is always going on within, around and about man. Man does not hear it as a rule, because his consciousness is entirely centered in his material existence. Man becomes so absorbed in his experiences in the external world through the medium of the physical body that space, with all its wonders of light and sound, appears to him blank. This can be easily understood by studying the nature of colour. There are many colours that are quite distinct by themselves, yet
when mixed with others of still brighter hue they become altogether eclipsed; even bright colours embroidered with gold, silver, diamonds, or pearls serve merely as a background to the dazzling embroidery. So it is with the abstract sound compared with the sounds of the external world. The limited volume of earthly sounds is so concrete that it dims the effect of the sound of the abstract to the sense of hearing, although in comparison to it the sound of the earth are like that of a whistle to a drum. The sound of the abstract is called Anahad in the Vedas, meaning unlimited sound. The Sufi name is Sarmad, which suggests the idea of intoxication. The word intoxication is here used to signify upliftment, the freedom of the soul from its earthly bondage. Those who are able to hear the Saut-e-Sarmad and meditate on it are relieved from all worries, anxieties, sorrows, fears and diseases; and the soul is freed from captivity in the senses and in the physical body. The soul of the listener becomes the all-pervading consciousness, and his spirit becomes the battery which keeps the whole universe in motion. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Achhe din jaroor aayenge THE NaMo government has hardly completed three weeks in power and congress leaders have already started mocking Modi for his 'Achhe Din Aayenge' statement, on account of rise in food inflation rate during the last month. What could not be achieved in last five years by the previous government is expected to be achieved in just three weeks! Taming inflation needs both demand side and supply side management. It takes time. The NaMo government has prescribed a minimum export price to discourage the export of onions and potatoes, has aksed state governments to crack down on hoarders and has de-listed certain commodities to augment supply in the open market. MODI'S tough talk on the economy is embarrassing. Blaming the previous government for the economic dent and threatening tough measures is ridiculous. The Gujarat model is fit for that state and not for the entire country. He should have better ideas to run a balanced government, without troubling the ordinary man. Gujarat was in distress when he took over. India is not. Tough measures at the cost of the common man by boosting corporates will have a bad dent on Modis image, as all know his corporate love by virtue of his inheritance. If he makes life miserable to the common man for the sake of the economy, he will not get a chance to explain. He should, as a successful Gujarat man, find the means to check rising prices which is further escalating without
INFLATION is a cause of worry for the new government. The Finance Minister and RBI Governor maintain an excellent understanding between them. Amid fears of further price rises, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan opined that tackling spiralling inflation would be a priority in the coming months. Rajan's comments came a day after the government revealed wholesale inflation, driven by higher food and fuel prices, had hit a high in the month of May. Forecasts of a weak annual monsoon that could cut crop production across the country have further fuelled inflation fears. The government is trying hard to take measure to bring inflation within the April figure. Even milk and onion prices have been taken care of. INDIAN economy is growing at much faster rate than world’s economy. The number of the Indian middle class becoming rich has gone up several times. They have a lot of money to spend with fewer people in the family. Their lust to spend is visible in their lifestyles. One reason for the inflation is that too much money is in circulation - demand is more than supply. Another reason is the unwanted intermediaries who add heavy margins to the purchase price. All these persons make a good profit in short run, but it becomes a cycle and they too suffer in the long run-as basic cost of raw material goes up and cost of production increases at every step. To control it, strict action must be taken against those who create artificial shortages. Mahesh Kumar, New Delhi

Hospital stories: Here and there
UNACCEPTABLE AND UNRELIGIOUS: The medical industry in the country is continually coming under scrutiny for its full-scale commercialisation and lack of empathy, an attribute that must lie at the core of the profession. So what happens now, to the people who cannot afford to pay to stay healthy?
THIS is with reference to the news I read about Mumbai's municipal hospitals which have sonography machines, but still send pregnant women to private hospitals. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Mahapalika Nursing Home in Tagore Nagar, Vikhroli is one of them. Municipal hospitals are allowed to charge Rs.100 per sonography, whereas private hospitals charge between Rs.800 to Rs.5,000. The staff of municipal hospitals have an understanding with private hospitals where they are paid commissions for each patient sent to them. This is unacceptable and unreligious. The persons involved in this practice are harmful to the mankind. At the same time, the persons who agree to go to the private hospital are also guilty. The concern authorities should catch these wolves and punish them so that nobody dares this in future. People should wake up and come together to fight this corruption which weakens society.
THE Chennai heart transport story brings to mind a true story. A car skidded and side-somersaulted twice. One air bag did not open. Other cars stopped, disconnected the electrical system and advised the injured passenger to lie still. Ambulance and para-medics came in 8 minutes. While immobilizing the injured person they realised that a more sophisticated ambulance was required. That, too, arrived in quick time. They made it to the hospital in less than 25 minutes. Distance: 60-70 km. Surprised? Well, it happened in Seattle, USA, to my daughter. She had a cracked C7 and five fractured ribs. The hospital sent the report to the US Consulate in Mumbai and my wife got a visa in an hour and flew out in 12. Had this happened in India she would have been paralysed, just by ignorant people picking her up. It is only when every such serious case gets speedy treatment, can we be proud of such achievements.

Police barricades outside the compound are a sure sign that the demolition process will soon be underway, though residents still haven't given up By Khushboo Panjabi
I Mumbai Traffic police put up their barricades outside the compound premises last evening.
t is the end of the road today for the residents of the Worli's Campa Cola Compound, though the residents have failed meet any of the deadlines set by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to hand over the keys The civic administration on Monday granted the resident reprieve for two days after the death of the compound's first resident. The Additional Municipal Commissioner of the BMC, Mohan Adtani, said, “The demolition process will start on Friday. We will be entering the premises at 11.30 am. We will be
talking to the residents peacefully.” He added, “We have a police force on standby. In case the residents do not allow us to enter the compound, we will file a case of contempt of court against them.” Adtani said that on June 20, they will first start by disconnecting the electricity and then the gas supply. “BEST and Mahanagar staff, along with the ward officers, will be present during the demolition process,” he added. The civic body will be filming the entire demolition process which will also serve as proof if the contempt of court case needs to be filed. Two families, the Kotharis and the Chauhans, have been permitted to vacate
HC dismisses petition against SRK Activist Varsha Deshpande had filed petition regarding permission to seek documents pertaining to Shah Rukh and Gauri's child through surrogacy
NCP leader in... Continued from pg 1 « Inderpal Singh Marwah alias Satthi, had demanded around Rs.8 lakh from Kashinath Dhirendranath Atak who has his shanty at Punjabi Camp in Sion Koliwada. For the last two weeks, prime accused Inderpal Singh, along with his colleague Taranjit Singh Arora, had been demanding the money from the complainant, and were threatening that they would complain to MHADA about his illegal shanty.

A
lmost months after activist Varsha Deshpande filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging a magistrate court's order denying permission seeking documents pertaining to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri’s child through surrogacy, the court on Thursday dismissed the petition. Varsha appealed for an action against the couple for violating the Act of Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT). The Magistrate court had last year rejected her plea for the documents pertaining to the child’s birth. Based on this, the petitioner then challenged the magistrate court’s order in the High Court. Deshpande's petition was against an order of a magistrate of October 23, 2013 which had rejected her application under section 28(3) of the PCPNDT Act, seeking directions to the BMC to produce all records of the surrogate mother and tests conducted on her in order to support her case. This relates to Deshpande's contention that the doctors had allegedly violated the PCPNDT Act that prohibits sex determination of a fetus. During the hearing in the case, advocate Pranav Badheka representing Shahrukh Khan denied that Khan had gone in for any sex determination test as alleged in the complaint. “The baby was already born when the article in one of the city tabloid had appeared. In fact, it is a case of baseless allegations to seek publicity,” advocate Badheka told the court.
their homes on June 21, due to the death of their family member. Adtani also said, “On June 23, we will start breaking the internal walls and make them uninhabitable.” Unlike in the past, the BMC did not deploy its forces and demolition equipment outside the compound a day ahead. For the fourth time, the civic body has reinvited tenders to carry out the demolition process. Meanwhile, the residents remain adamant and are going to fight the battle on their own. None of them are going to leave the compound, they claim. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in
“Atak recorded the conversation in his mobile phone and played it for the police, and on that basis, we filed the FIR. Prime accused Inderpal Singh is in the NCP-Youth wing as the city Vice President,” added Tikekar. Sources from Antop Hill police station revealed that Inderpal Singh had already taken Rs.25,000 from the complainant and was harassing him for the remaining amount since the past two weeks. Shockingly, he is reported to have a previous record in the police station for other offences, including house breaking. Inderpal Singh was produced before the court which sent him to judicial custody, said Tikekar.
Solar boon for tribals By Suresh Golani
I Supporting the contentions of Khan's lawyer, BMC's counsel M.P. S. Rao also told the High Court that the allegations levelled in the complaint are baseless. “The Corporation has conducted an enquiry and found the complaint baseless,” Rao said. Deshpande's lawyer had earlier sought a speedy time-bound hearing of the case before the magistrate as mandated by the special legislation enacted to prevent female foeticide. After hearing both sides, Justice Revati Mohite Dhere dismissed the criminal writ petition filed by Deshpande, while allowing the case to proceed before the magistrate. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in
n a much-needed respite to hundreds of people, especially members of the tribal community, street lights running on solar energy have been installed in farflung areas of the forest zone near Kashimira and Ghodbunder. The street lights which have been installed on the roads leading to the tribal dominated hamlets including Dackul-Pada and Maschacha Pada have been funded by Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik from his Constituency Development Fund. Sarnaik inaugurated the lighting system on Tuesday night. “This is our sincerer effort to promote the
use of renewable energy and improve the quality of life of local communities, who had been deprived of the much-needed and basic facilities for all these years,” he said. The villagers have to trek at least 2 kms to reach the highway. Fear of attacks by wild animals and crimes by trespassers had forced residents especially women folk of these age-old hamlets to be confined within their doors after dusk. However, after a decade-long struggle, the hamlets have been empowered with light and there is now not only brightness after sunset but the provision has also erased the collective and abysmal feeling of neglect within them, both by the society and the gov-
Indian money in Swiss banks rises to over Rs.14,000 cr By A Staff Reporter
I
ndians' money in Swiss banks has risen to over two billion Swiss francs (nearly Rs.14,000 crore), despite a global clampdown against the famed secrecy wall of Switzerland banking system. The funds held by Indians with banks in Switzerland rose by over 40 per cent during 2013, from about 1.42 billion Swiss francs at the end of previous year, as per the latest data released yesterday by the country's central banking authority Swiss National Bank (SNB).
The latest data from the country's central banking authority Swiss National Bank comes at a time when Switzerland is facing growing pressure from India and many other countries to share foreign client details In contrast, the money held in Swiss banks by their foreign clients from across the world continued to decline and stood at a record low of 1.32 trillion Swiss francs (about USD 1.56 trillion or over Rs.90 lakh crore) at the end of 2013. During 2012, the Indians' money in Swiss banks had fallen by over one-third
to a record low level, reports PTI. The total Indian money held in Swiss banks included 1.95 billion Swiss francs held directly by Indian individuals and entities, and another 77.3 million Swiss francs through 'fiduciaries' or wealth managers at the end of 2013. The latest data from Zurich-
based SNB comes at a time when Switzerland is facing growing pressure from India and many other countries to share foreign client details, while its own lawmakers are resisting such measures. India has also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe cases of alleged black money
of Indians, including funds stashed abroad in places like Switzerland. The funds, described by SNB as 'liabilities' of Swiss banks or 'amounts due to' their their clients, are the official figures disclosed by the Swiss authorities and do not indicate towards the quantum of the muchdebated alleged black money held by Indians in the safe havens of Switzerland. SNB's official figures also do not include the money that Indians or others might have in Swiss banks in the names of entities from different countries.

utocar India has announced a unique, photo-based contest called The Uncool Moments contest, in an effort to highlight and bring awareness about unruly drivers across the country. The contest will allow the audience to capture moments of reckless driving and share them on Facebook. The contest came into focus after the 2012 report on road accidents in India, which stated that a majority of road fatalities involve the youth. Autocar India is promoting the concept of Unsafe is Uncool, in order to advocate safe and responsible driving among youngsters. Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, tells us, “While Autocar India is focussing on cars and on reaching out to auto aficionados, we also aim to spread the message of responsible driving. This platform allows the youth of today to identify what is uncool and therefore unsafe. We want to reach out to the growing number of young motorists, by involving them in an activity that will make them understand the importance of exercising caution and driving responsibly.” Out of all the entries, 10 people will be chosen as winners by expert drivers from Autocar India. The more likes and shares your picture gets on Facebook, the higher chance you have of winning the contest. Winners will be awarded with high-end goodies such as JBL headphones and GO Puck chargers. You can look forward to delicacies such as the Margarita Flat Bread, made with vine ripened tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil, as well as the Beirut Flat Bread, made with goat meat, pine nuts and dill cream. Owner of Nico Bombay, Nico Goghavala, says, “Pizza Napoletana is as artisanal as it gets, since it uses traditional pizza making techniques. Diners usually order a thin crust pizza, thinking that it will naturally be lighter on the stomach. They couldn't be further from the truth! Whether the bread is digestible or not depends on its yeast content... less yeast, makes it easier on the stomach. We use the least possible amount of yeast using flour with a high protein content; throw in some of the finest San Marzano tomatoes and artisanal buffalo mozzarella cheese that you can find and present to you a bite of heaven — a little sprinkle of our signature chilli oil won't hurt, we are Indian after all!” when Ongoing where Nico Bombay, Bombay Samachar Marg, Kala Ghoda Contact 9820152102

Something new
« new launches:
find out what’s just out
Newly launched website, Ideas Designs Production aims to provide a range of event services at the click of a button. Dev Goswami checks it out to see if it’s as convenient as promised
T
he home page for Ideas Designs Production, launched by hospitality agency, Party Cruisers Pvt. Ltd. is, unfortunately, a little bland. Considering that this is the website for a hospitality and event organising company, I was looking to be wowed a little more from the get-go. Making things look attractive is supposed to be their forte, so the dull website was a little off-putting. But, after trawling through their sections, I discovered that the website has several features that do manage to make it stand out from the landslide of new event companies cropping up across the city. The home page is an animated brochure, with a sideshow of wedding stages, corporate stalls, theme parties and receptions that they’ve organised and/ or designed. It also has links that take you to different sections such as corporate events, wedding events, corporate stalls and theme parties. Click on these links and instead of just showcasing pictures of their past work, the website displays several stock designs — from wedding reception stages to themed parties with arched balloon gates. You can choose an item at the click of a button. So, if you like a particular design and don’t want to add a personal touch (sadly, there’s no mention about how to customise something online, so
you’d have to call them), you can just add an item to your cart and proceed to check out. They also have a solitary game table for theme parties and a few of their links (such as the Baby Shower), don’t have any products ready to view at the moment — I’m guessing that they plan to add some in the future. The weddings section also displays various themes that they offer, at a starting price of `10,000, but these are options that require you to get in touch with them, as no further information is provided as far as complete wedding planning is concerned. Overall, the website offers a unique solution to event planning. Shopping online for ready stages or complete themes is certainly a new concept. But, Ideas Designs Production needs to improve in a lot of areas. Their website design could be much better and information on shipping is missing, along with information on customisation. You can, of course contact them on one of the several numbers mentioned, but that defeats the purpose of an online service, doesn’t it? Where www.ideasdesignproduction.com

What’s more impressive than the French theme (that any other restaurant could pull off with ease), are the grills, woven through and around the restaurant, lending it a decidedly Indian vibe. You could argue about which is the dominant culture in the décor (Is it French? Is it Indian? Is it Indo-French? You decide!), the intricate paintings adorning the walls and distinctive cutlery at each table make one thing clear — this is not a restaurant for those who are uncomfortable with luxury. If it wasn’t for the music in the background, we would have been obliged to speak in hushed tones through the night to preserve Artisan’s allure. If fruit infusions rock your boat, pick Grass. Also priced at `800, the mixture of vodka, curry leaves, fresh pears and lychee juice is a startling combination. The classic Mai Tai (`800) doesn’t disappoint either, but I’d rather pick from the first two. We were also served a special pineapple and orange concoction made by the bartender. Asking for recommendations and specials at Artisan will work wonders for you.

If you think paying `350 for a bowl of peanuts is a bit much, you haven’t tried Artisan’s Deconstructed Peanut Masala. The artisan style appetiser is mixture of a delicious potato patty, peanuts and spices. Our favourites from their small tapas menu included the succulent Nalli Nihari Pizza (`500), which needed a more generous helping of meat. The Albondigas (`450) too are a must-try. For the uninitiated, these are beef dumplings dunked in tomato gravy. We were delighted with this

dish because the tomato gravy was tangy, did not resemble ketchup in terms of taste or consistency and seeped into the tender beef dumplings perfectly. The Pan Fried Scallops (`650) however, were the star of the meal. They’re not affordably priced and you’ll have to fight with your dining companion to get the last bite — but the good thing is that they are worth the fight. Protein Bake Shop, a venture by Rashi Chowdhary, a nutrition expert and diabetic educator, makes eating your favourite desserts extremely healthy. Made with protein isolate to maintain a healthy carbohydrates to protein ratio, their cookies, biscotti, brownies and nut butters are proof that you don’t have to compromise on the good stuff even if you are looking to eat healthy. We tried their Chia and Flaxseed Slice (`500 for four pieces), made with fresh bananas, protein powder, honey, chia seeds, flaxseeds and 70% dark chocolate chips. Speaking of dessert — it was only apt to finish our meal with a tasty Artisan macaron. A flavour apiece, we were satiated. Although the macarons were not the best we’ve ever had, they added the only other bit of French flavour to the meal after the décor, which was much appreciated. The bottom line is that although Artisan is not a one-of-a-kind restaurant, the food is tasty and the ambiance certainity adds to the experience. We’re going to go back to see what a luncheon by the French windows is like.
calories. The slice was moist and resembled the texture of a chewy brownie. The chia seeds and flaxseeds added crunch and the chocolate chips lent just the right amount of decadence to the snack. Perfect as a mid-morning treat (as long as you don’t mind the taste of bananas) this one keeps you full for hours. We also tried the Paleo Rawnola (`500 for 220g), made with almonds, cashews, coconut flakes, honey and super seeds. Without any sugar and added preservatives, it was a healthy eat. However, it was quite oily and heavy on the stomach. We couldn’t eat more than three teaspoons in one go and it worked as an entire meal rather than just a snack. If you want to give this a try, do so for it’s nutritional value, but, if you are looking for something that is both healthy and delicious, then this snack is probably not for you. The Paleo Biscotti (`500 for eight pieces) comes in an attractive brown paper bag, with an informative label telling you about its contents. With eight pieces of biscotti that contain almond flour, coconut flour, honey, almonds and chocolate chips, each piece contains around 60 calories, 1.5g protein and 2.9g fat, with 7.7g carbohydrate content. It looks and smells delicious, but getting used to eating it takes a while. It starts off slightly too nutty, with a sawdust-like texture. But, after you finish the first piece, you can get through the rest of the bag pretty easily, since it’s quite addictive. You also begin to like the taste as you continue to eat. After the second piece, we found ourselves craving another, and another... It keeps you full for quite a while, which means that you won’t snack unnecessarily in between. For the price, these treats are a good option to curb your sweet cravings once in a while, but are on the expensive side if your sweet tooth pops up often. Having said that, we’d love to try some of their other products, such as the chocolate stacks (`500 for four pieces), almond butter (`400 for 200ml) and their paleo pizza — the only savoury snack on the menu.

With delectable food, incredible landscapes and wonderful people, the island country of Madagascar is more exotic and beautiful than you’d ever imagine. Preeti John tells us how she had the experience of a lifetime
M
adagascar was always high on my list of must-visit destinations, but I never thought I’d get to visit the beautiful island so soon and on my honeymoon to boot! I’m not ashamed to say that my fascination with Madagascar began when I first watched the film Madagascar. Who wouldn’t want to visit a place that has been epitomised by loveable animated creatures?!
Down To ThE DETAILs Since Madagascar is not a popular tourist destination, planning our trip took a little more research than usual. Even on the internet, information is not readily available — we had to go through an exhaustive search for online resources. It’s a good idea to get in touch with some locals before you visit, and this is where social media came to our rescue! There are several beautiful places to visit in Madagascar, so we were spoilt for choice. Although a 12-day honeymoon is a
long break, for Madagascar it is just not enough. After weeks of research, corresponding with hotels and detailed planning, we finally decided to travel from Antananarivo (the capital, in central Madagascar) to Isalo National Park in Ranohira in the southwest, and then onward to Ifaty beach in Tulear in the south.
ExpErIEnCE ThE sIghTs AnD sounDs Antananarivo (also Tananarive or Tana, as the locals call it) is by far, the country’s most developed and bustling city. It isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from a capital city, but its simplicity will draw you in. There are several accommodation options ranging from budget picks to uber-fancy hotels. We picked a rather quaint French hotel, La Ribaudière, for our first two days in the country. Unsurprisingly, the restaurant specialises in delicious French cuisine. Tana does not have much to offer in terms of sightseeing, but the markets are excellent. We were quite impressed by the main Analakely market — a packed, bustling place where everything under the sun was available. But, beware of your surroundings and be careful of your bags and wallets! The Tsimbazaza Botanical and Zoological Park was next on our list and it serves as the perfect introduction to Madagascar’s unique flora and fauna. We spotted the fossa (a

The five days we spent at Ifaty were gastronomic heaven for us, seafood lovers. We ate crabs, lobsters, squid and barracuda, all cooked to perfection in delightful flavours. The hotel also sets up candlelit dinners for their guests on the beach. Imagine a dark night, barely illuminated by the single candle at your table, the twinkling stars above you, the waves at your feet and soothing groovy island music drifting in from the speakers. apital markets regulator Sebi yesterday cleared a slew of reforms including a proposal to hike public holding in all PSUs to a minimum 25% besides new norms for research analysts and ESOPs given by listed firms. Besides, Offer for Sale mechanism will be revamped to allow non promoters to use this route for selling shares and a provision of 10% reservation will be provided to retail investors. The decisions were taken at a board meeting of Sebi here and included many reform measures to boost primary markets.
Norms For IPO, Preferential Issues Eased In a bid to revive the primary market, Sebi yesterday eased norms related to the size of an IPO and pricing of preferential shares while allowing anchor investors to have a greater exposure to the offering. Besides, Sebi at its board meeting held here yesterday has also approved a proposal to allow bonus shares to be sold in IPO (Initial Public Offer) even if they have been issued within less than a year. The board decided that all companies with a post-issue capital above Rs 4,000 crore are compulsorily required to offer at least 10% stake in the IPO.
New Set Of ESOP Regulations Capital market watchdog Sebi yesterday finalised an easier set of regulations for employee stock option schemes that among other things would classify ESOP Trusts as a separate category of shareholding entities. With the new norms, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has allowed companies to have employee stock option programmes where they can buy their own company shares subject to certain conditions.
PSUs To Have 25% Minimum Public Shareholding In 3 Years To bring uniformity in rules, capital market regulator Sebi yesterday cleared a proposal for ensuring at least 25% public holding in all the listed state-owned companies within three years. The decision would help the government raise close to Rs 60,000 crore from the sale of shares in around 36 listed PSUs where the public shareholding is less than 25%. Under current norms, government undertakings should have at least 10% public shareholding whereas for non-PSU firms the minimum level is 25%.
Sharing KYC Details For The Entire Financial Sector To ensure common Know-your-Client system for the entire financial sector, Sebi board yesterday approved the proposal for sharing KYC details with entities regulated by other financial sector watchdogs. The move, which comes after a board meeting of the capital market regulator here, would facilitate the KYC process for the investors in the entire financial sector.
Norms For Research Analysts Sebi yesterday cleared detailed norms for 'research analysts' to safeguard investors from any manipulation by such entities and to bring in greater transparency in their activities. The draft norms to regulate individual research analysts and entities were approved by the board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) at a meeting here yesterday.
Expanding Framework For OFS Mechanism Retail investors will now get a 10% reservation in an offer for sale (OFS) by listed companies and they may also be given discounts by entities selling shares through this mechanism. Besides, non-promoter shareholders with more than a 10% stake can sell their shares through an OFS, according to a proposal cleared yesterday by the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi), which also allowed a larger set of firms to tap this route.

High Fiscal Deficit Exposing India To Shocks, Says Moody’s NEWS FLASH

T
he Indian economy is exposed to "shocks" on account of high fiscal deficit and the country's credit outlook will depend on government's initiatives in the next month's budget to contain expenditure and reduce exposure to global commodity prices, rating agency Moody's said yesterday. "More relevant to (determine) the sovereign credit outlook will be whether the budget includes measures that address the government's low revenue base, high current expenditures and exposure to commodity prices," Moody's said in a report. India's budget deficit is high and this increases macro- economic imbalances and thus "expose the economy to shocks", Moody's Investors Service said in the report titled: "Frequently asked questions on India's fiscal position and the forthcoming budget". "In absence of measures to reduce the fiscal deficit, the future high growth rates many forecast for India may not be realised. The July budget could indicate whether fiscal constraints on India's sovereign credit profile will ease over the coming years,"
Moody's said. The Union Budget is expected to be presented in the second week of July. Whether the new government's FY2015 deficit estimate is above or below the previous regime's estimate of 4.1 per cent of GDP, it will not be the key determinant of India's credit outlook, Moody's said. The deficit in 2013-14 fiscal was 4.5 per cent. Moody's has assigned a 'Baa3' rating on India, with a stable outlook. "India's high budget deficits are partly due to a large population and low per capita income levels. Low income levels limit the government's tax revenue base and at the same time drive socio-political
pressure to increase government spending on subsidies and economic development," it added. However, Moody's said that other countries with low per capita income have avoided deficits as large as India's. This suggests that fiscal discipline can improve budget outcomes despite structural challenges. The report added that wide budget deficits have kept India's inflation high and contributed to a widening current account deficit between 2011 and 2013, which heightened exchange rate volatility and resulted in higher domestic interest rates. These trends have exacerbated the slowdown in GDP growth since 2011, it added.
India Inc Sees GDP Growth Of 5-6% In FY15
A
s many as 81% of Indian corporates believe the country's economy is likely to grow 5-6% in the current financial year, says a survey. "India Inc expects the economy to grow between 5-6% and rupee around 77% to appreciate against the US dollar," according to a survey by ING Vysya Bank. Around 67% respondents see the rupee to be at or below 60 for
FY'15. There were 16% participants who expect levels lower than 58 up to September 2014, but then see depreciation to levels greater than 62 by the end of FY15. Over 300 corporate finance executives representing a wide range of industries, both manufacturing and services sectors, clearly indicated a sustained momentum in growth, the survey said.
12th Plan Spending To Fall Short Of Target By `6.58 Lakh Cr By A Business Reporter
P
BUSINESS
lan expenditure, the government spending on social sector schemes, is likely to fall short by Rs 6.58 lakh crore in the 12th Plan period (2012-17), according to the Planning Commission estimates. "Even with 20% increase in (Plan) resources for next two years, the resource shortfall is likely to be at Rs 6.58 lakh crore," the Commission's official estimate revealed. During the first three years of the five-year policy period which began on April 1, 2012, government has allocated 40.48% of the total outlay of Rs 35.68 lakh crore. Earlier during the UPA regime,
the Plan expenditure since the beginning of the 12th Plan was curtailed for two years in a row to keep a tab on fiscal deficit. During the first year of the policy period in 2012-13, the spending was pegged at Rs 5.21 lakh crore in the budget estimates. However, the actual Plan expenditure remained lower at Rs 4.14 crore. Similarly, in the second year of 12th Plan, the spending was projected at Rs 5.55 lakh crore in the budget while the revised estimate was at Rs 4.76 lakh crore. The interim budget for the current fiscal has pegged the spending at Rs 5.55 lakh crore, thus the total Plan expenditure allocated so far in the first three financial years of the 12th Plan
works out to be at Rs 14.44 lakh crore. The new government will present the regular budget for the current fiscal next month. Now, it is up to the new government to find out ways of stepping up Plan outlay to meet the 12th Plan target, an official said. The Plan outlay flows through 70 ministries and 66 centrally sponsored schemes. The Plan expenditure of Rs 35.68 lakh crore envisaged in the 12th Plan is 124.53% more than the spending of Rs 15.89 lakh crore during the 11th Plan (2007-12).

Legendary Mehboob Khan, who made classics like 'Mother India', 'Anmol Ghari' and 'Andaaz', passed away 50 years ago. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur chronicle the life and times of the great film maker
M
EHBOOB KHAN passed away in May 1964, so this happens to be the 50th death anniversary year of the distinguished film director. He was a man of humble beginnings but despite this handicap, Mehboob became one of India's greatest filmmakers. Mehboob has always been referred to as a legend. But how many movie buffs really know the vast repertoire of work that Mehboob Khan possessed? Mehboob's craft was learned in the Film Theatre, the common motif in his films usually being the oppressed poor pitted against the oppressive rich be it the poor tribal against the money-grabbing capitalists in
Roti (1942), the commoner against the prince in Aan (1952) or the poor peasant woman against the slimy zamindar in Aurat (1940) and Mother India (1957). From 1940 to 1942, Mehboob made three of his most important films - Aurat (1940), Bahen (1941) and Roti (1942). Aurat highlights a peasant's love for his land. The story of a resolute young woman who starts life full of hope and dreams but ends up old and careworn. Bahen was about a brother's obsessive love for his little sister but Roti was unlike anything Mehboob had done earlier – a blistering attack on capitalism and the lust for money. Mehboob then set up
his own production house – Mehboob Productions and came out with a regular output of films like Najma (1943), Taqdeer (1943) and Humayun (1945), but they did not do well. Anmol Ghadi (1946) which starred Suraiyya and Surendranath became a money spinner. The film also had a great musical track by Naushad. Mehboob's next masterpiece was the super hit Andaz (1949). The volatile triangle to beat all triangles, Andaz remains startlingly modern even by today's standards. Mehboob followed it with Aan (1952) – his first film in colour. Amar (1954), regarded by Mehboob as his
Riteish dares to deviate By Chaitanya Padukone
“H
ey, ‘Humshakals’ with its nine ‘anokhe avataars’ is a freak-out fusion of crazy confusion and definitely not a comedy of errors. You also get to watch a proper rollercoaster effect story with constant waves of laugh-outloud (LOL) situations,” insists actor Riteish Deshmukh, whose slapstick comedy multi-starrer co-produced by Vashu Bhagnani and directed by Sajid Khan releases today amidst fanfare. Not surprisingly, Riteish is on planet euphoria, because his Marathi movie production‘Yellow’ won critical acclaim at the recent National Awards, while on the personal front, he is all
set to be a‘papa’, as actress-wife Genelia is ‘expecting’. Incidentally, the enterprising Deshmukh has also ventured into Marathi cinema as a lead actor with his maverick movie ‘Lai Bhaari’. Enthuses Riteish, “We had such a blast while shooting for 'Humshakals' on various foreign locations that its all evident on the screen. There was this healthy ‘oneup(wo)manship’ amongst Saif Ali Khan, Ram Kapoor and me when we were all skimpily clad in beachwear swimsuits. In fact, I had to bashfully borrow my wife’s skirt for one of the scenes. There was a lot of ‘waxing’ done to sport the ‘feminine’ look, and I realised that it's all so taxing. We have funny romantic escapades with our oomph-oozing co-stars like Esha, Tamannah and of course the glam-goddess Bipasha Basu. It’s overall a hilarious tsunami, one can say,” assures the actor who had been appreciated in his recent sex-comedy ‘Grand Masti’ which clicked at the box-office. “Actually ‘Humshakals’ was challenging because we also played mentally retarded characters and behaved so childishly,” shrugs Deshmukh. Meanwhile, his upcoming Hindi movie ‘Ek Villain’ directed by Mohit Suri, releases next week. Reveals Riteish, “Out here, it’s a daring departure from my funny image, as I play a serious character of a frustrated common man. It’s a gripping musical love story with unexpected twists,” claims the actor who in real-life is a qualified architect. Little wonder then, that he is able to diligently execute the ‘blue-print’ plans for the high-rise structure of his acting career.
favourite film, flopped at the box office. In 1957, Mehboob remade his earlier hit Aurat as Mother India. This epic saga depicted the sufferings of an Indian peasant woman. So tremendous was its success that the film is in fact a reference point in the long-suffering mother genre. After this high, Mehboob’s next Son of India (1962) was a big disappointment and, in fact, his weakest film. This was his last directorial venture as he passed away in 1964. Mehboob was a filmmaker who mixed commerce with message and comes across as a man deeply rooted in the art of film-making.
Mehboob Khan and writer Vrajendra Gaur
Tamannah’s VJ act Tamannah Bhatia is a big star down south and then she made her debut in Hindi films in ‘Himmatwalla’ which didn’t do well. Now her second sojourn in Hindi films is the Sajid Khan directed ‘Humshakals’. ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the beautiful Tamannah about her second outing. Some excerpts Were you affected by the failure of ‘Himmatwalla’? Success counts a great deal in Hindi films and a flop is a setback to your career but my work was appreciated and when Sajid called me for ‘Humshakals’, I was pleasantly surprised.
What is your character in ‘Humshakals’? I play a London bred modern girl called Nia who is a VJ and my styling is completely different from ‘Himmatwalla’.
How was it like working with the leading men? I met Ram Kapoor, the first time round and he is a big prankster. Riteish and I are friends
because his wife Genelia is my contemporary down south and he has a great sense of humor and Saif is a big gentleman, always wishing everyone on the sets and made me comfortable while shooting and so my scenes have really come out well with him.
How was Sajid Khan as a director? He has a fantastic sense of comic timing and being an actor himself, he performs the scenes for the actors and that makes it easy for the actors. And he is an encyclopedia about film trivia. Which was your most difficult scene in the film? I had to slap Saif in a scene and that scene was the most difficult for me.
‘Have to conquer a lot in Bollywood’ P
ost the success of 'Aashiqui 2', actress Shraddha Kapoor, who is three films old in Bollywood, wants to "conquer" a lot more and is willing to work hard. Shraddha, daughter of popular actor Shakti Kapoor, made her acting debut with 'Teen Patti' alongside megastar Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan and others. Her next release was 'Luv Ka The End' with Y-Films, which is a subsidiary of Yash Raj Films. However, both the films
failed to garner much attention. It was her third release, 'Aashiqui 2', which turned out to be a huge success. “After the success of 'Aashiqui 2', I feel that I need to conquer a lot more. I am constantly working towards it and I will work harder. Nobody expected 'Aashiqui 2' could do so well as it had two new faces. “It changed so many lives that Friday; of mine, Mohit Suri's (director) and also that of Aditya Roy Kapur's (actor),
besides singers and composers,” Shraddha said in an interview here. Shraddha feels that the success 'Ashiqui 2' has received is like a “crazy phenomenon”. For Shraddha, the kind of appreciation that came from all quarters post the release of 'Aashiqui 2' was overwhelming. “For me, to be remembered as 'Arohi' (the name of her character) was the biggest compliment,” the actress said.

he lack of support for Preity Zinta, when she filed a complaint against Ness Wadia for abusing and harassing her in public, is symptomatic of the film industry’s indifference towards anyone who is not powerful, or useful to them.
RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot When it comes to partying, everyone lands up to celebrate success, maybe, in private they also commiserate with the failures of their friends, but with a few exceptions, the attitude of the film industry is chadhte suraj ko salaam— salute the rising sun. Preity Zinta is no longer an A-lister, she is not arm candy of some rich or powerful male, ergo, why stick the neck
out for her? It’s not as if she is going to be the leading lady in their films so why should her gratitude be sought? The quotes extracted by the media from her colleagues sound either reluctant or non-committal. If it’s a man at the receiving end, industry men band together, no actress who has raised her voice against anything has managed to get
enough support to get heard. Everybody is conveniently out of town or out of reach. The fact also is that the industry is always vulnerable to threats from anybody who wants some media mileage. The money riding on films is so high, that nobody wants to take any risk, and if they take a stand, it’s usually on safe subjects, where they have

nothing to lose. Hiding under their shells has thus become a habit. The only ones who short their mouths out are the ones looking for easy publicity – but even they speak on random topics that won’t boomerang on their careers. Whenever a woman, or even a man has taken on industry (or outside) high-ups, they have had to fight a lone battle. They have had to stake their careers, and many times, they have just not recovered from the backlash. The Preity-Ness matter was personal, and there is a somewhat valid reason for many to say they don’t wish to comment. But when the industry is under attack for social or political issues, there is rarely a show of solidarity. In contrast, when a writer or artist is attacked by some loony faction quick to take offence, the community stands up in protest, even if it is a token gesture like an online signature campaign, a march or a letter to the ministry concerned. The film industry people have turned looking the other way into a fine art.

harmila Tagore was one of the few actresses who dared to wear a bikini in the 1960’s. Now it seems Soha Ali Khan wanted to follow mommy dearest’s footsteps. Soha recently shot for a magazine cover in a bikini. For most actresses it becomes a matter of taboo, as they fear the reactions from their families. However for Soha family approval was never an issue. Says Soha, ''It is not the first time I have worn a taboo in front of a camera. I had done it eight years back as well. It was a big issue in my mother’s era, not anymore. Saif picked up the magazine and exclaimed that it looked hot without realizing it was me on the cover. Nevertheless he was very supportive of me wearing a bikini.'' It is to be known had it been wifey Kareena Kapoor Khan wearing a bikini, would Saif be equally supportive?

Murugadoss managing yet another 100 crore success against his name on Friday (after 'Ghajini', which started it all), the film would be special for all involved once it enters the century club. "For Akshay in particular, this is great news as the film would mark his third century after 'Housefull 2' and 'Rowdy Rathore'," comments an observer, "In fact it would be interesting to see the kind of distance it covers beyond 'Housefull 2' which had netted 115 crore. As for 'Rowdy Rathore's' record of 133 crore, it would have to wait for a while." Meanwhile, as far as his positioning amongst the top superstars is concerned who have a century to their name, Akshay would be now be joining Aamir Khan who again has three 100 crore hits ('Dhoom 3', '3 Idiots', 'Ghajini'). While Salman Khan (6), Shahrukh Khan (4) and Ajay Devgn (4) have more 100 crore hits than him, Hrithik Roshan is now behind with two ('Krrish 3', 'Agneepath').

3rd ODI abandoned after another Indian batting collapse M
IRPUR: The third and final ODI between India and Bangladesh today was abandoned after frequent rains marred play on a day the visitors put up another shoddy batting display. Having won the series 2-0, a third stoppage due to heavy downpour during the Indian innings ensured there was no chance of a clean sweep for the Men in Blue. Weather had played spoilsport in all the matches but today it became the decisive factor as even an efficient drainage system couldn’t ensure the start of the proceedings after India were reeling at 119 for nine in 34.2 overs with the match being reduced to 40 overs a side after a second stoppage. While the play had started after the earlier rain delays, a third spell of shower was enough for the umpires to call off the match.

Spain ‘not good enough’ after early World Cup exit
Chile send Spain packing, the Spaniards register the earliest exit from a World Cup by a defending champion in history
Win & lose as men: Alonso
Xabi Alonso admitted that it is the end of an era for Spain after the reigning champions bowed out of the FIFA World Cup in ignominy. Chile's 2-0 victory at the Maracanã, following on from the Netherlands' 5-1 rampage last week, saw Spain set an unwelcome record as the only champions to bow out after just two matches of the group stage. Alonso, Real Madrid's former Liverpool midfielder, said: "Things are going to change. Eras end with defeats...and this was a painful defeat. It's a completely unexpected failure but that is sport. These things happen. It was unexpected but we have to take the great sadnesses in the same way as we take the great joys, as men."
R
IO DE JANEIRO: Spain today made a shock early exit from the World Cup after a disappointing 0-2 loss against Chile to become only the fourth defending champions to crash out of the tournament at the first stage here. Spain needed either a win or at least a draw to remain afloat in the tournament but failed to do so. They now join Brazil (1966), France (2002) and Italy (2010) in the dubious club of defending champions bowing out of the World Cup in the first round. They now join Australia, who lost to the Netherlands 2-3 in an earlier Group B match of the day, as the first teams to bow out of the tournament. The Iberian country also earned the dubious distinction of making the earliest

exit from a World Cup by a defending champion in history. No defending champions have ever been eliminated after only two games of the first phase. Eduardo Vargas put Chile in the lead in the 20th minute before Charles Aranguiz made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute to send Spain packing in front of the packed crowd at the iconic Maracana Stadium. Chile thus avenged their 1-2 loss to the same opponents in their group match in the 2010 World Cup. worst defeat since the 1-6 loss to Brazil in 1950 World Cup, was followed by defeat at the hands of Chile. It turned out to be the worst night for Spain as they did not have any answer to the aggressive and attacking football of Chile in the initial 45 minutes and then played a chasing game in the second half to be outclassed by their opponents in the end. The talk of the end of an era was imminent as Spain, the ex-
ponents of the famous 'tika, taka' style of football and two time European Championship winners (2008 and 2012) besides the 2010 World Cup crown, exited from Brazil 2014 without any impact and scoring just one goal in two games. By virtue of the win, Chile made it to the round of 16 along with the Netherlands. Spain's final group match against Australia on June 23 at Curitiba has now been rendered inconsequential. The winner of the group will now be decided after the match between Chile and the Netherlands on June 23 in Sao Paulo. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque dropped regulars Xavi Hernandez and Gerard Pique in favour of Pedro Rodriguez and Javi Martinez.
Is Spain’s elimination the end for tiki-taka?
R
IO DE JANEIRO: Spain's elimination from the World Cup by Chile not only spelt the end for one of the greatest national teams, but also threatened the demise of an entire footballing philosophy. Spain's intricate passing style, dubbed 'tiki-taka', swept all before it for the best part of six years, but the sight of Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso being harried out of their stride by Jorge Sampaoli's hard-working Chile at the Maracana on Wednesday felt like the end of an era. Argentina legend Diego Maradona is among those who believe that tiki-taka has become
a tactical relic, but can an approach that has become so widespread be invalidated by the result of just one game? As Spain midfielder David Silva asked British newspaper The Independent before the tournament: "Why would we change? We've done very well with this style. There's no need to change it." Where Spain led with tiki-taka, winning Euro 2008, so Barcelona followed, dominating the European club game between 2008 and 2011 under Pep Guardiola, who subsequently installed the same playing philosophy at Bayern Munich.
NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE FALL... Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque during the match against Chile.
RIO DE JANEIRO: Spain's players had different explanations for the team's early World Cup exit. Captain Iker Casillas said there was lack of commitment, midfielder Xabi Alonso thought there wasn't enough hunger. According to Fernando Torres, Spain was "just not good enough." Chile's 2-0 victory on Wednesday meant the 2010 World Cup champion is the first title holder to exit after just two games following the opening 5-1 loss to the Netherlands. Spain's squad of 23 players featured 16 who were part of its World Cup success in South Africa. Casillas, Alonso and Xavi Hernandez had been the engine behind the team's triumphs on the world stage, but were left exposed in Brazil. "We didn't know how to maintain our hunger or that conviction needed to win a tournament. The joy and success we've experienced is over," Alonso said from the Maracana stadium. “We lost our knowhow, which has helped us win so many of these important games. It doesn't feel like our other tournaments." Spain's players agreed that they did not read their opponents well, or know when to clamp down and control the games through keeping possession as it has been known to do. "The commitment wasn't there," said Casillas, who owned up to perhaps his two worst performances in 156 appearances for Spain. "From the very first moment everything went awry." Alonso, who along with Casillas and Xavi may have seen their international careers come to an end, said Spain was not mentally prepared for Brazil, while the team's physical state was not at its peak either. "Normally cycles come to an end after a defeat. Maybe it would be best to think about making changes," Alonso said. Torres did not want to jump that far ahead, as the Spain striker put a positive spin on the collapse, even suggesting he would not have changed a thing. "We went down playing our style. It's what got us here and we're going to maintain it," Torres said. "We didn't do anything different than what we did in South Africa or in the two Euros we won. We came here with the same mentality and approached games in the same way. "Those times we won, this time we lost." Spain's demise was more made glaring by coach Vicente del Bosque's decision to stick with an aging group of players that had already won everything in international and club football. "We thought we were in good shape, it was tough to even choose the 11 players that would line up, but the reality was quite different," Del Bosque said.

World Cup intruders, Miss BumBum arouse security concerns
RIO DE JANEIRO: A ‘Miss BumBum’ who claims she slept with Cristiano Ronaldo, a Chilean stadium invasion and a Lionel Messi fan who snuck into Argentina's training camp cast an unflattering spotlight on World Cup security Wednesday. Just when Brazil was soaking up praise for a relatively snag-free tournament the three security breaches gave organisers some of their most embarrassing moments yet and prompted football's world governing body FIFA to reassess its measures. First, the Miss BumBum incident. Andressa Urach, a former contestant in a pageant to choose Brazil's sexiest female posterior, was frog-marched out of Portugal's training ground by security staff just minutes before Ronaldo and his team took to the pitch. Urach and the World Player of the Year have something of a history -- or so says Urach. British newspapers last year reported claims from her that Ronaldo, 29, had cheated on his girlfriend Irina Shayk with her. At the time, the Portuguese superstar angrily denied the claims, tweeting that he was "deeply outraged by a situation intended, in vain, to affect my personal life." Urach, a co-host on a Brazilian variety program called the Muito Show, has been determined to get Ronaldo's attention at the World Cup. Last week she reportedly welcomed him to Campinas, the southeast Brazilian city where Portugal are based, by painting his green and red shirt onto her naked skin and holding up a sign that said "Kisses C. Ronaldo." She appeared to be planning another media stunt Wednesday. She had a microphone in her hand and was apparently wearing official accreditation. But, surrounded by a knot of photographers, she was unceremoniously ushered from the premises. After the incident, she tweeted: "I came to give good luck to C7 (Ronaldo) and was removed from the pitch and they took away my press credentials. Brazilian authorities arrested 85 people and ordered them to leave the country.

KAYO Croatia knock 10-man Cameroon out of World Cup
M
ANAUS (BRAZIL): Striker Mario Mandzukic scored two second-half goals as Croatia knocked 10-man Cameroon out of the World Cup with a 4-0 rout in Manaus on Wednesday. Croatia bounced back from their opening defeat to hosts Brazil to keep alive their hopes of progressing from Group A with an emphatic display. But Cameroon were largely the architects of their own downfall after playing the last 50 minutes with 10 men after Alexandre Song's dismissal for a stupid reckless punch to Mandzukic's back. The Indomitable Lions seemed anything but as they imploded with full-back Benoit AssouEkotto even trying to headbutt team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo in the dying moments following an argument. Croatia, for their part, could
have doubled their score but at least did what they needed to. Veteran striker Ivica Olic gave them a 1-0 halftime lead before his Wolfsburg team-mate Ivan Perisic added a second ahead of Mandzukic's brace. The result leaves Niko Kovac's Croatia third in the table, just one point behind joint leaders Brazil and Mexico. Cameroon are bottom with no points. Croatia now face Mexico in Recife on Monday for a place in the last 16. Cameroon were hamstrung before kick-off when captain Samuel Eto'o lost his battle to make the starting line-up having failed to recover from a knee injury. Mandzukic returned for Croatia in style having missed their opening defeat to hosts Brazil through suspension, breathing life into their last 16 hopes. They needed just eleven

minutes to take the lead as Cameroon failed to bounce back in tropical Manaus after their opening 1-0 defeat to Mexico.Olic met a Perisic pass at the far post and buried his shot past Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Itandje, then nearly added a second five minutes later. Things went downhill for Cameroon as Barcelona's Song became the third player to be sent off at the World Cup, after Portugal's Pepe and Uruguay's Maxi Pereira. Referee Pedro Proenca spotted Song lashing out at Mandzukic on a Croatian counterattack and he produced a
red card on 40 minutes. Perisic grabbed Croatia's second on 48 minutes when he unleashed a powerful shot after a strong run. Mandzukic, who has said he wants to leave Bayern Munich with Poland striker Robert Lewandowski set to arrive from Borussia Dortmund, then grabbed his brace. He headed home from a corner on 61 minutes before firing in his second on 73 minutes when he tucked home the rebound after Itandje saved a shot from substitute Eduardo. Barcelona's new signing Ivan Rakitic squandered a golden chance to claim Croatia's fifth just before the final whistle while Moukandjo hit the bar with a late header, before tangling with Assou-Ekotto. Finke's Cameroon will now be playing just for pride when they face Brazil in Brasilia on Monday.
Italy wary of tropical terror against Costa Rica N

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2014
ATAL (BRAZIL): Italy look to reach the World Cup last 16 with victory over giant-killers Costa Rica on Friday but the fourtime champions are wary of Recife's tropical conditions. Tough-tackling Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has underlined Costa Rica's likely advantage in the sweltering conditions in Recife, where he said Italy were "dying from the heat" last year during the Confederations Cup. Having made a blistering start to what is only their fourth World Cup campaign with a shock 3-1 win over Uruguay, the 'Ticos' would be forgiven for keeping the pace high from kick-off as they go in search of another upset. "Italy have great players like (Mario) Balotelli and (Andrea) Pirlo, who controls all of their play, and we have a lot of respect for them," said FC Copenhagen midfielder Christian Bolanos. "But we'll hope to benefit from the heavy climate. We are used to playing in those kinds of temperatures."
The Italy team celebrate after scoring a goal during the World Cup Group D match between England and Italy at Arena Amazonia on June 14. Italy, who crashed out at the group stage in 2010, launched their bid for a record-equalling fifth title with a crucial 2-1 win over England in Manaus last week in their Group D opener. But the four-time champions were given notice following Costa Rica's shock win over 2010 semi-finalists Uruguay that a match they would have been widely expected to dominate may be more difficult than first imagined.
"They'll be fired up after their win," said De Rossi. "If they had lost 4-0 then we might have underestimated them, but now there's no chance of that." However De Rossi added: "But I hope, and I'm sure, we can beat Costa Rica and secure our ticket to the second round." A second win for Italy would provide a huge boost ahead of their final group clash against Uruguay, but coach Cesare Prandelli faces selection dilemmas.
AUSTRALIA WILL BE FEARED BY THE BEST, INSISTS COACH PORTO ALEGRE (BRAZIL): Australia coach Ange Postecoglou believes his side will become a force to be reckoned with at future World Cups despite being eliminated by a 3-2 defeat to the Netherlands on Wednesday. Australia had deservedly led 21 just before the hour mark thanks to Tim Cahill's stunning volley and Mile Jedinak's penalty after Arjen Robben had given Holland the lead. Postecoglou insisted his young squad will become a force to be reckoned with at future tournaments, including the Asian Cup on home soil next year, if they continue their current rate of progress. "I don't feel pleased right now because of emotions of the game, but we came to this World Cup and we're playing against three of the best nations in the world. People were saying we weren't going to score a goal and we would just try and survive and I think in both games we've taken it to the opposition.”

COLOMBIA PIP IVORY COAST IN ENTHRALLING BATTLE
GOAL DANCE: Colombia's James Rodriguez (10) celebrates with his teammates with a brilliant dance after scoring the opening goal during the Group C World Cup soccer match between Colombia and Ivory Coast at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia, Brazil.
B
RASILIA: It was another great game at the 2014 World Cup as three second-half goals in quick succession saw Colombia prevail over the Ivory Coast 2-1 in an enthralling battle between two well-matched sides. The Ivory Coast looked finished after Juan Quintero had doubled Colombia's advantage minutes after James Rodriguez had put them ahead, but a wondergoal from Gervinho pulled them back into the game and set up a close ending, with Colombia hanging on to take a huge step towards qualification. Although the match began as an open encounter, chances were few and far between in the opening stages. Play had to be stopped early due to a giant inflatable ball being hurled onto the pitch, and the first chance was spurned by Teofilo Gutierrez shortly afterwards after collecting Rodriguez's fine pass only to overrun the play. Gutierrez had another fine chance just later as the ball fell to him in the sixyard box, but it appeared not to be the River Plate forward's day, as he got his feet into a mess and couldn't get the ball out from underneath him in time to force it over the goalline. Ivory Coast were making an even contest of it, however, but were slightly fortunate to get in at halftime with the scores at 0-0. In the second period, however, it would be a different story, both in terms of goals and the direction of play. The West Africans came storming out of the blocks after half-time and immediately created a flurry of chances, with Yaya Toure going close and Wilfried Bony kicking fresh air with an overhead effort. Juan Cuadrado also came close for the Colombians, turning his marker but forcing
a fine save from Boubacar Barry as the stopper tipped it onto the post. Against the run of play, however, and with a most atypical goal, Rodriguez put his side ahead. Cuadrado's delivery from the corner was a good one, and Rodriguez escaped his marker, the substitute Didier Drogba, to fire a brilliant header into the net. The Ivorians looked to get back into the game with a corner, but soon fell two goals behind, a seemingly fatal mistake after Colombia countered from the poor delivery and the substitute Quintero finished smartly after a great pass from Gutierrez. The Ivory Coast looked beaten, but immediately afterwards, in a stunning second half, scored one of the goals of the tournament to get themselves back in it. GervCOLOMBIA 2 inho, looking a far cry RODRIGUEZ 64', from his Arsenal days, QUINTERO 71’, picked up the ball on the left and skipped daintily IVORY COAST 1 GERVINHO 74', past first Camilo Zuniga and then Cristian Zapata before curling an excellent finish past David Ospina in the near post to set up a tense finale. The Ivory Coast pushed hard for a later winner, but were twice thwarted by the excellent Mario Yepes, who prevented Tiote and Bony from capitalising on a late free-kick before Quintero took an audacious effort which nearly found the target from extreme range. Yet Yepes almost undid all his good work in the final minute of injury time as he let a loose ball slip for Drogba to pounce, but Ospina flew out of his goal to clear the ball before the veteran striker could seize the opportunity. Colombia held on to win, and while they're not there yet, the South Americans now have one foot in the knockout rounds.
