Earlier, yesterday morning, state BJP leaders Sudhir Mungantiwar and Eknath Khadse argued that over the last two decades the BJP had shown magnanimity by allocating six Lok Sabha seats to Sena and even accommodated Republican Party of India (Athawale) faction leader on the Rajya Sabha ticket from its quota. They argued that they did not want the alliance to break but all the same indicated in no uncertain terms that the Sena proposal of allocating just 119 assembly seats Continued on pg 8 ÂŤ

nding days of hawkish stance and tough posturing from both the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior Sena leader Subhash Desai announced yesterday that both the dominant Mahayuti partners wanted their two decade old alliance to continue. He added that both the alliance partners will show magnanimity and that Sena president Uddhav Thackeray will take the final decision on seat sharing. Desai further stated that the alliance partners will have one more meeting late in the night to finalise the seat sharing. Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray who accompanied Desai as they called on BJP's state election management incharge O P Mathur at the latter's residence remarked that the third generation wants the two generation old alliance to remain intact. He however maintained that the 150 plus mission of the Sena remains intact.

circular received by BMC-run BYL Nair hospital (Nair hospital) and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital commonly known as Sion hospital sent the authorities and the staff at the hospitals into a tizzy on Friday as it stated that the BMC had directed the hospital authorities to provide technicians and pharmacists from the hospital for purposes of election duty. “The circular had asked that 140 technicians and 26 pharmacists from Sion hospital and 120 technicians and 25 pharmacists from Nair hospital be provided for election duty. This came as a shock to us because till date never has the category of staff required for election duty been stated. Only the required

numbers have been told. It is the hospital that then decides which staff from category or grade would be allotted for what duty and generally, it is the staff that deal with the administrative work that are sent. This is for the first time that technicians and pharmacists have been asked for specifically. But if technicians and pharmacists remain absent from work, first during the training for the duty that lasts for three to four days and then on the day of the election, how will the hospital function smoothly,” asked Ranjana Athavale, Secretary, Nursing and Paramedical Staff Union. So, after the union raised this question with the hospital authorities, it was decided that they would not send the paramedical staff and instead send available substitutes for the election duty.

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014

“At first, Sion hospital had thought of sending half of the requirement for election duty but later decided not to send any because it would be difficult to handle the patients with half the staff. Even Nair hospital will not be in a position to send the staff that they have been asked for. Substitutes will be sent,” informed Athavale. While the additional municipal commissioner (AMC) Sanjay Deshmukh and Dr R Bharmal, Dean, Nair hospital were unavailable for comments, Dr Suleman Merchant, Acting Dean, Sion hospital said, “There was a miscommunication but the issue has been resolved. We have decided to send substitutes for the election duty and the AMC has agreed to it.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

the exams which were to be conducted in October will now be conducted from November 5. The exams which were supposed to be conducted in September will remain as per the schedule. In all, the MU has now postponed the exams for 500 papers. During the Parliamentary elections held in February, the MU had declared holidays on the polling and counting days. Even colleges had postponed their exams, as most of the colleges acted as polling stations. When the ADC spoke to Dr Madhu Nair, Academy Council member, she said, “It is not possible for the teachers to undertake both the examination work as well as the polling duty. Teachers rarely get holidays and it is not fair to let them miss their vacations. The new timetable will be declared soon.”

he Medical Council of India's (MCI) decision to let MBBS students be exposed to the real world of hospitals during the first year itself has been approved by doctors in Mumbai. Dr Kishor Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council, calling it a forward and practical move, said, “This approach is of integrated teaching where it is not about mere reading of books and writing answers during examintions. With this step, these young soon-to-be doctors will get to know how it actually feels to be working in a hospital.

They will see their seniors work, diagnose, perform surgeries and learn from the experience. This will help them in applied thinking of whatever they have learnt.” Dr Suleman Merchant, head of radiology and acting dean of Sion Hospital, also had similar thoughts. “The more clinical experience the students have, the better it is. This approach to teaching will help them be better doctors as they can relate to what they have been taught in classrooms. I totally support this move.” By next year, this new step with be incorporated in the medical syllabus in Maharashtra, said Dr Taori.

30-year-old driver was arrested yesterday by the Vakola police for allegedly running over and killing a cat, after a society member called an animal welfare NGO and complained about the incident which took place just outside the Greenfield Building at Vakola, Santacruz (East). The car happens to belong to Bholenath Mishra, alias Bhola Mishra, attached to the Kalina constituency of the BJP party. The eyewitness who lives in the same society, in her statement to the police, said, “On Wednesday evening, the driver, Rajan Yadav, along with the owner of the car hit the cat while entering the society and killed it on the stop. They just left it there to die, so I phoned Salim Chavniya who works for Peace For Animal Welfare Association (PAWA). When he arrived at the spot he filed an FIR with the Vakola police and Rajan Yadav was arrested.” According to PAWA president Salim Chavniya, “I got a call about a cat which was run over by a car. The lady asked me to help file a

case. I went there the next day and found out that the car belongs to Bholenath Mishra of the Bhartiya Janata Party.” It turns out that this is not the first time Rajan has been accused of hitting animals with the car. Society members have warned him twice before to avoid rash driving when entering or exiting the society premises. “I personally called the city police control room when Mishra began misbehaving with us at the society gate. The we went to the Vakola police station and registered a complaint against his driver,” said the society member. At the time of accident, the cat was sitting very close to the security cabin at the building gate, but Yadav took a sharp turn. The cat tried to escape, but finally got trapped under the back wheel of the car and died on the spot. Police sub-inspector Sachin Gawde said, “After verifying all the facts from the NGO and society members we have registered a case against Rajan Yadav under various sections of the IPC, including 279, 428 and Animal Act 11 (A).

It’s official: NRIs love Modi more than SRK

PM Narendra Modi

THERE are two huge parties -First is this week when Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (and a few other celebrities) will perform at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA. Next, on Sept. 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at Madison Square Garden in New York, USA. Both venues can hold about 20,000 people apiece. A politician versus a Bollywood evening of “stunning visuals, state of the art production, mind blowing pyrotechnics and stunning costumes.” What’s an NRI to do? If Bollywood is the glue that binds the desi diaspora, it’s the politician who appears to be the draw. An email from the team putting on the Modi event, the Indian American Community Foundation, announced it is “completely sold out.” A livestream will be up at Times Square and at viewing parties around USA. Granted, the tickets for Modi were free and distributed partly through community organisations, but this is Shah Rukh Khan we’re talking about. The second richest actor in the world. He has nearly 9 million Twitter followers to Modi’s 6.43 million. Long after Modi's tickets sold

Shah Rukh Khan

out, tickets to 'Slam', were still available for $100 at Izod Center, which sits just a few miles outside New York City. The best seats cost more than $1,000. Typically at these shows, the actors lip-sync to songs from their most popular movies in between a mix of rehearsed dialogues and adlibbing. The Modi event, meanwhile, “promises to be one of the largestever gatherings to hear a foreign leader speak on American soil.” That’s ironic considering the US government’s past denials of a visa for Modi. In 2005, Modi had sought to travel to the US — also for a rally

at Madison Square Garden.

Scare them away with porn

IT'S got to be tough for the modern xenophobe to live comfortably in Queens, USA — as one of the most racially diverse areas in the whole country. A dweller is bound to see someone they hate every time they peer out the window. It's easy, then, to understand why one Queens Village man, known only as 'Jimmy', decided to fight back against diversity by posting images of hardcore porn in his front windows, with the apparent intended purpose of scaring his immigrant neighbours back to their native land, or at least away from his block. That's Sanjeev Aggarwal's theory, who along with his wife and fouryear-old son are forced to live next door to Jimmy and his public predilections. We are not made privy to what, exactly, is depicted in the windows of Jimmy's home, since those the news agency insisted on blurring the images, describing them only as "so vile, so intentionally pornographic that just about anyone would be offended by their public display." The Aggarwals have called the police, and for a time, Jimmy takes the pictures down. But they always seem to come back. "That's my artwork," he said to a reporter who persistently asked him why he was doing so, and then snapped his front door shut.

Jimmy, who puts up hard core porn in his front windows, is seen peering through a window.

Hitler’s former food taster reveals the horrors of the Wolf ’s Lair

Margot Wolk, the only survivor who tasted vegetarian fare meant for Adof Hitler .

EVERY meal could have been her last. And when she had finished eating the bland vegetarian dishes put before her, 25-yearold Margot Wölk and her young female colleagues would burst into tears and “cry like dogs” because they were grateful still to be alive. Margot Wölk was no Nazi, but she was one of 15 young women who were employed at Adolf Hitler’s heavily guarded Prussian “Wolf’s Lair” headquarters during the Second World War. Her job was to taste the Nazi leader’s food before it reached his lips, to make sure it wasn’t poisoned. She was the only one to survive. All her colleagues were rounded up and shot by the advancing Red Army in January

1945. Now a frail 96-year-old widow, Margot Wölk has overcome feelings of shame. She said the food was always vegetarian. There were constant rumours that the British were out to poison Hitler. He never ate meat, so the women were given rice, noodles, peppers, peas and cauliflower. Some of the girls started to shed tears as they began eating because they were so afraid, she recalled. They had to eat it all up. Then they had to wait an hour. She said they used to cry like dogs because they were so glad to have survived. Margot Wölk couldn’t escape her nightmares and has lived alone with her memories ever since.

s the filing of nominations for the Assembly election begins today (Saturday), a lull continues to ride over the Congress-NCP front. Yesterday the NCP leaders were desperately awaiting a fresh proposal from the Congress to discuss the seat-sharing arrangement, but most top-ranking Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, preferred to be tightlipped over this issue. The Assembly election is barely a month away. Ruling alliance partners are still struggling to complete the seat-sharing pact. As both Congress and NCP are adamant on their stance, the ball has now reached the

New Delhi high command's court. State NCP president Sunil Tatkare said, “We are expecting that we will be invited for talks in a day or two as the poll notification will be issued and the process of filing of nominations will begin on Saturday. But, at the same time, we have completed our election preparations as well.” Referring to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's comments that the NCP fields rebels to defeat the Congress candidates, Tatkare said, “The same thing can be applied to Congress as well. In the Parbhani Lok Sabha seat, Congress MLA Ramprasad Bordikar worked to defeat NCP nominee but still no action was taken against the

legislator. While NCP sacked Deepak Kesarkar, a Sawantwadi MLA who refused to campaign for Nilesh Rane in Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha constituency”. Malegaon MLA of Jan Surajya Shakti party, Mufti Mohammed Ismail has joined NCP. Along with Ismail, leaders of Teesara Mahaj, a Malegaon-based outfit have also joined the NCP. They were welcomed by Tatkare. He said, “More inductions into the party will be held in next few days.” Referring to senior leaders like Suryakanta Patil, Babanrao Pachpute and Vijaykumar Gavit resigning to join the BJP, Tatkare pointed out that it was said that NCP is in trouble as everyone is quitting the party, but it is not so. arrying a mobile phone in your pocket while data service is on leads to infertility among men and women, claimed health experts, warning government agencies to take necessary action, at an address at the press club, while speaking on 'WHO classified mobile phone/tower radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Why?' on Friday. “Excessive use of mobile phones and exposure to heavy and constant radiation causes brain tumor which normally develops in 40 years. Either the government can take precaution immediately or it can wait to collect proof, evidence and data,” said Dr Dariuz Leszczynski.

Dr Dariuz, who is a member of the expert committee – WHO IARC 2011 was addressing media on at the Press Club on Friday. Dr Dariuz said, “Keep away the mobile when not in use and switch off the data service when it is not in service.”

HONOURED... He added, “Excessive use of mobile radiation causes brain tumor, constant headache, hearing loss and vision loss. In some countries, the radiation is not measured and controlled by third parties. Consequently there is no check on the radiation.”Safety standards of mobile radiation need to be revised constantly. Revision must be done to decrease the mobile and tower radiations. Besides, the telecom companies need to explain the true

situation to the public and the government, he opined. Now 4th generation (4G) mobile phones are coming in the market to meet our demand of faster service and fast download. In this service, exposure to radiation is higher. Societies having mobile towers on building are

more vulnerable to radiation. Dr Dariuz suggested the solution to it as increase in the number of mobile towers and reduction in the power of the towers. If the power is reduced then it is not excessively harmful, he said. He however said that there is no research to prove this.

“A

powerful gang of religious fanatics is hatching a sinister conspiracy to lure Hindu and other non-Muslim girls into a dragnet of love and force them to embrace Islam; in the name of 'Love Jihad',” said Pramod Muthalik, Founder of Shriram Sene who held a press conference in the city on Friday. “In August, a case came to light wherein a religious fanatic, Rakibul, pretending to be a Hindu, allegedly tricked a national-level shooter Tara Sahadev and then, forced her to convert to Islam. The resulting nationwide publicity has brought the seriousness

of Love Jihad to the forefront. “This problem has assumed gargantuan proportions, and hundreds of such cases have already occurred and are still occurring in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh etc. In order to completely uproot the anti-national conspiracy of 'Love Jihad', an independent and stringent Act should be legislated, and conversions and subsequent marriages taking place in Madarasas should be held illegal and banned,” demanded Muthalik. The conference was attended by Advocate Sanjiv Punalekar (Secretary of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad)

and Ramesh Shinde (National Spokesperson of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti). “The issue of Love Jihad initially surfaced in the 'Shahan Shah and Sirajuddin Vs Kerala Government' case. Still, if our Home Minister was in the dark about the phenomenon of 'Love Jihad', we are ready to present the women victimised due to 'Love Jihad' and their relatives before the Home Minister and the public. Maharashtra Government agrees about the existence of 'Love Jihad'. Maneka Gandhi (Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare) recently stated that there is not a single official complaint about 'Love Jihad'. However, in

Congress-ruled Maharashtra, there are 22 cases of 'Love Jihad' registered with the police. This official information has been supplied by the Inspector General of Maharashtra Police, under the 'Right To Information' Act. Therefore, we demand that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi should seek this information from the Maharashtra Government and initiate action against 'Love Jihad' phenomenon,” said Ramesh Shinde, National Spokesperson of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. He further said, “V S Achuthanandan, former CM

The MSRTC also plans to introduce more routes after the new buses come in. The routes will be introduced from April 2015. Sanjay Khandare, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) told the ADC, “Shivneri is a prestigious brand bus service which we offer to our beloved passengers. We will continue to handle the service with utmost care.” Mukund Dhus, Public Relations Officer, MSRTC, added, “ The MSRTC has released a tender this week for the 35 buses which they will be taking on lease. It might not be Volvo this time, we are looking for other options, the tender is not restricted to only high-tech buses. However, there will be no compromise on the quality, the standards will be maintained and all the buses will be ultra modern high-tech buses. The ten-

MSRTC to add to its fleet of Shivneri buses. der will increase the competition and we might see a variety of new modern buses. The new buses are expected to be on the floor by 2015.” “The surveys for the new routes are going on and depending on the potentiality and the exposure, we will select the new routes,” he said. The Shiverni buses currently run on these routes: Dadar-Pune, Borivili–Pune, Thane-Pune, NasikPune, Aurangabad-Pune, Kolhapur–Pune and Sangli–Pune.

of Kerala, CPI-M had also stated that a few fanatic organisations in India are indulging in giving effect to 'Love Jihad' cases with financial backing from foreign countries and trying to mold Kerala into an Islamic State. Present Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy has said that 2,500 girls from the state have been victimised by 'Love Jihad'. In order to prevent any danger to the unity and integrity of the nation, a stringent law should be enacted in the country against deceit and atrocities committed against the women. This Act should make provision for awarding stringent punishment to the accused from

the Muslim community on the basis of the statements given by the girls (and their relatives) from non-Muslim communities like Hindu, Jain, Sikhs, Christian, Buddhist, etc. If the victim wills for a divorce, it should be granted immediately. In the case of such a divorce, the victim should be entitled to half the property of the accused. Similarly, the Central Government should initiate high-level inquiry into the supply of funds from foreign countries for inter-religious marriages, human trafficking and their utilisation for terrorist activities. Corrective actions to completely uproot this sinister conspiracy should be initiated.”

No progress on border talks E

ven as prime minister Modi and Chinese President Xi held discussions and signed trade agreements, there was a face-off between Chinese and Indian troops at Chumar area and incursion of Chinese civlians at Demchok along the Indo-Chinese border. It looks like the Chinese wanted to send a message to India. A statement issued by the two leaders on the border problem said China and India will seek a fair, reasonable, and naturally acceptable solution. They recognised tranquility in the border as an important guarantee for development and growth of ties between the two countries. The Chinese president’s words on the border issue shows that we have heard them before. Both the parties say there should be give and take policy and that the problem was created by colonial rulers. What China has made clear — Xi did not say it — is that the border issue cannot be setlted unless India gives up claims over territory which belong to it. There was a hint years ago that India should give up territories in the east like Arunchal and that China should give up its claim over Ladakh. What China is prepared to give up are cold, icy areas where a blade of grass does not grow. What China wants with India is partnership in trade and at the same wants chunks of Indian territory. There has been serious talks over India-China border dispute, but no settlement has been reached. The latest talks between India and China show that there will be no agreement for a long while as well.

HE new threats of terrorism and violence posed to South Asia, especially after the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan this year, was the main topic of discussion at the sixth meeting of SAARC Interior and Home Ministers in Kathmandu, and the member countries voiced concern and asked to chalk out strategies to check radical groups and extremist ideologies. Addressing the summit, Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said South Asian countries need to carefully assess the impact on the entire region of the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan. India along with other SAARC members share a common and indeed vital stake in peace, stability and economic development in Afghanistan. Thus, they are naturally concerned by new threats of extremism, terrorism and violence being held out to South Asian countries like India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which cannot but raise concerns. Groups with radical and extremist ideologies do pose threats across national boundaries, in this volatile security environment and these groups even have no compunction in issuing threats publicly against neighbouring and regional countries.

enables stringent punishment of individuals, organisations and publications that advocate and incite terrorism and violence, across national boundaries. Amid the growing tensions and threat perception, India's focus is on the need for countries to adopt comprehensive enabling legislation and also for the inclusion of offences under domestic law, strengthening extradition procedures and providing courts effective jurisdiction to prosecute offenders, when extradition is not granted. Some SAARC member states are yet to ratify the Convention on Mutual Assistance on Criminal Matters, which was signed in 2008 and it is urged for them to do so to enable the widest possible mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. Meanwhile, New Delhi is committed to securing justice for the families of the victims of deadly terrorist strikes, like the Mumbai at-

PERSPECTIVE

India raised a major issue that concerns all South Asian nations which is terrorism, which is driven by internal, regional and international factors, within and across national boundaries. There was sea change in the strategic environment in the neighbourhood with the emergence of a new dispensation in Afghanistan following the 9/11 terror attacks in the US. Undeterred by threat perception, the international community has lent unprecedented support to the democratically elected Government of Afghanistan and hoped that this will continue. Most NATO troops are due to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of this year as the US-led war effort against the Taliban winds down. The SAARC member countries have been asked to ponder over how to chalk out strategies to deal with the menace of terrorism which involves not just violent activities but also economic destabilisation. Moreover, it is imperative that all South Asian states should introduce legislation that

tack in November 2008. Another issue which has become a matter of concern for all nations is the increasing circulation of counterfeit currency in the region. However, the host country -- Nepal – has extended cooperation to India, in dealing with the movement of counterfeit currency, across our borders. Meanwhile it is pertinent to note that India has been facing serious problems arising from drug smuggling in states located along international borders, like Punjab, and this menace afflicts not only countries where narcotic substances are produced but also beyond their borders. Funds from such smuggling often finance terrorism. We need to strengthen domestic legislation and cooperate even more to implement the 'Regional Convention on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances', while enhancing multilateral cooperation globally, as drug smuggling inevitably has global dimensions. The SAARC Interior and Home Ministers' Conference provides opportunities to discuss other issues of common interest like cyber crime, human trafficking and illegal movement of arms across national boundaries. However, we should acknowledge that one evil which we all need to address individually and collectively is the issue of corruption. Since the Narendra Modi government has promised the people a policy of 'zero toler-

AD!” shout my daughters as they get off the flight from New York where they live and into my car, “We long for Indian food!” I know what they mean, its not so much their mother’s cooking they’ve missed, but dinner from a Chinese restaurant nearby, and a dish called ‘Burnt Chilly fried rice!’ I know that within a few hours an order will be placed and the man from the restaurant will bring those dishes they’ve dreamt of all those long hours in the plane and maybe before. But this time there was a look of askance on their faces, especially my younger one, “It doesn’t taste the same dad!” It didn’t! Gone was the flavor of burnt chilies, gone was the slight ever slight sweet taste which gave the rice a lasting lingering memory in your mouth, reminding you so much of it. You raided the fridge the next day to se if there were leftovers; there wasn’t, because nobody left back anything, it was so appetizing!

But this time, ’twas different: The taste had changed, there was no lingering hankering. What was left was a sad memory of something, once beautiful: I wondered along with my kids what had happened. Change of cook. Lowering of standards. Loss of recipe. Cheaper ingredients. Non-

India also suggested to establish a 'SAARC Centre for Good Governance' where the administrative officers from all member countries could come together to exchange their experiences pertaining to development and good governance. It will not only strengthen the positive trends of development in South Asia but also help in realising the shared dream of good governance. The first order of business of Modi-led government was to assure the SAARC nations of the importance India placed itself in working for the welfare and well being of the people. The very first bilateral visits of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi were to our two Himalayan neighbours – Bhutan and Nepal – with whom the country have open borders and enjoy close ties.

School of Governance At the conclusion of the meeting yesterday, SAARC countries vowed to combat common challenges of terrorism, piracy, human trafficking, drugs smuggling, cyber crime and corruption by forging cooperation among the law enforcement agencies of the eight-member grouping. The member nations also unanimously endorsed India's proposal to establish a SAARC School of Governance in the region with the aim of promoting good governance among the member countries. It was also agreed to forge cooperation and collaboration among their law implementing agencies for strengthening and expanding them to ensure more security in the region, according to a statement issued by SAARC Secretariat. The member nations extensively discussed issues relating to combating terrorism in its all forms, collective responses to fight transnational organised crimes, drug abuse, cyber crimes, corruption, maritime security, piracy and trafficking of women and children. The home ministers also deliberated on operationalisation of SAARC Terrorism Offences Monitoring Desk (STOMD) and SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD) located in Colombo, Sri Lanka as well as matters relating to SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. Because it wasn’t grounded, it wasn’t rooted to the same cook, the same recipe, the same ingredients, and maybe the same zeal for perfection. Are we grounded? Our recipe is the holy scriptures. MUMBAI | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 How did the spark for your TV show ‘Satyameva Jayate’ ignite? ‘Satyameva Jayate’ has been my most ambitious project. This began as a dream some six years ago. When Uday Shankar of Star TV asked me why I was not doing TV, it got me thinking. I realized that TV is a strong medium and it should be used to make people think. Uday coaxed me with the idea that I should think of dominating television now. That is how the spark ignited. After that meeting I actually started thinking about it passionately and produced and anchored the show.

My choice as an actor has always been very different from that of other actors. There was no message at all in ‘Delhi Belly’. Basically, I have been part of entertaining films like ‘Ghajini’, ‘Fanaa’, ‘Peepli Live’, ‘Dhobi Ghat’ and ‘Rang de Basanti’, besides socially relevant films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Talaash’. You have not acted in a suspense film after ‘Talaash’. Does it scare you that a suspense film does not have repeat value? I know that a suspense thriller does not have repeat value, but I am confident that the audiences will like to go to watch my film the second time to know how the suspense has been resolved. Why do you think films like ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Gupt’, ‘Kahaani’ etc clicked in a big way?

Is it true that you do not enter your film even for the prestigious National Awards? In the past, all films produced by my banner like LAGAAN, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and JAANE TU YA NA JAANE NA have been bestowed with the National awards but as a matter of policy, we at Aamir Khan Productions decided not to enter our film PEEPLI LIVE for the National awards at all. This decision of mine had nothing to do with Anusha Rizvi who had directed the film, though she went on record expressing her displeasure that we did not send her film for awards. Why? We stopped applying for the National Awards, after TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. I did not send even Kiran Rao’s film DHOBI GHAAT for consideration for the National awards. Let’s face facts. I am a creative person and I do not want to lobby for awards. I did not even lobby for the Oscar though LAGAAN was nominated for the Oscars and was in the top 5 contenders.

Shah Rukh Khan to team up with Ash?

I

f sources are to be believed then Shah Rukh Khan is all set to share screen space with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Rohit Shetty’s next. Sources suggest that the 'Chennai Express' filmmaker who recently revealed that he had signed SRK for his next flick, approached Ash to star opposite him. Even though the AshSRK fallout was well known in the industry, the 'Devdas' co-stars were seen sharing a great camaraderie at a recent sporting event. Even though Shetty hasn’t disclosed the intrinsic details of his film, we hear that it will go on floors by next year.

Ratna Pathak Shah is a veteran theatre, film and television actor having acted in successful films like ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ and now she is all set to wow the audiences with a royal matriarch’s role in the remake of the eighties hit ‘Khoobsurat’. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the versatile actor about her new role and this is what she said.

Is it because your mother, the late Dina Pathak played the role you are doing now in ‘Khoobsurat’, which prompted you to do this role in the remake? Yes. That can be considered as one of the reasons and also because I am a huge fan of director Shashank Ghosh who has directed films like ‘Waisa Bhi Hota Hai’ and ‘Quick Gun Murugan’. Also, it’s an Anil Kapoor Production, which made me accept this role.

Tell us something about your character in the family. I play the head of a royal palace who is very 'prim and propah' and gets a culture shock when a free spirited physiotherapist lands in her kingdom, played by Sonam Kapoor, to treat my husband played by Aamir Raza Hussain and also when she falls in love with her son played by Fawad Khan. It’s script is akin to the original Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic with a few changes.

How did you prepare for

your role? I had special costumes made for me and also had my hair done in a special style and also spoke in a manner in which royal folk speak.

How was it like working on the film? It was great and we had superb fun. Shashank is a chilled out guy, and Sonam is an absolute sweetheart. The producer, Rhea Kapoor provided us with all that was needed. Fawad

Khan from Pakistan is a good talent and will impress the audiences although he is a bit of an introvert.

Do you feel Sonam will do justice to a role played by diva Rekha? Yes. Certainly. Sonam is a good actor and has played her part well and even Rekha was satisfied when she was shown the film. It’s only that Sonam hasn’t copied the original Rekha and played the part

in a way only she can.

You were not much seen on the big screen after the success of ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’? I was getting offers but I was not satisfied with them and so I continued with stage and television. You are an iconic actor on television too with popular shows like ‘Filmi Chakkar’ and ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.’ But we are not seeing much of you on television? I am not satisfied with what is shown on television today. If I get an offer like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, I will certainly do it but not the regular stuff.

Your younger son Vivaan Shah is being talked about. Yes. I feel happy for his success and am eagerly awaiting his film ‘Happy New Year’ to release. That’s Ratna Pathak Shah for you, a proud mother!

fter playing a feisty boxer in 'Mary Kom', which revolved around the life of Olympic medal-winning boxer MC Mary Kom, Priyanka Chopra might be seen in yet another biopic. Buzz has it that the actress has been approached to play the lead role in a biopic on retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi, who was the first woman to join the Indian Police Service and shot to fame after she towed the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's car for a parking violation.

Chopra's spokesperson confirmed that the actress has been approached for the biopic, but added that it is too early to speak about it. However, on her part, Kiran Bedi seemed clueless about these plans and said that she has not been approached in this regard yet. Priyanka will be next seen in Zoya Akhtar's 'Dil Dhadakne Do', which also stars Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and others.

ome questions Bollywood (or at least the producers of this film) need to answer: if a young woman is supposed to be vivacious, must she be portrayed as demented? Must royalty always be depicted as a bunch of sourpuss types? In fact, why must a fairytale Prince Charming be literally a prince, when privy purses were abolished in 1971? Why is bad behaviour considered so appealing and dignity something to be shot down? Will Kirron Kher ever stop playing the loud, crude Punjabi matron? Who the hell told Sonam Kapoor that it is cute to wear garish costumes? Or that getting drunk and dancing with the domestic help to a song that goes “Injun ki seeti pe maaro bum dole” is cool? The Rani is not so impressed by Mili, but everyone else, including Vikram and his kid sister are charmed. argis Fakhri has had a good run at the box office recently with her film ‘Main Tera Hero’ and her guest appearance in ‘Kick’ for the song ‘Yaar Na Miley’. The American-born actress has been working on a Hollywood film titled ‘Spy’ and this gave her an opportunity to work with British heartthrob Jude Law for a schedule of the movie. While shooting in the US for this film which is directed by Paul Feig, the two bonded over their love for food and yoga. abib Faisal whose best work so far is his directorial debut Do Dooni Char, and the script for Band Baaja Baaraat, comes up with an almost tasty dish of a movie, with maybe just a crucial ingredient missing that prevents it from tasting right. His heroine is Gulrez, the always feisty Parineeti Chopra, far more convincing as a middle-class girl with upwardly mobile ambitions than Sonam Kapoor in this week’s other release, Khoobsurat. She is studying in college and working as a shoe salegirl, because she has a passion for shoes and dreams of going to the US to learn footwear designing. Her father Abdul Qadir (Anupam Kher) is an honest court clerk, and eager to get her married before he retires. The biggest hitch is his inability to pay the hefty dowry bridegrooms demand. Here’s one of the film’s problems—it does not take a strong enough antidowry stand. Neither father nor daughter are against dowry per se, they are

Foodie Romance Daawat-E-Ishq

Director: Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anupam Kher and others Rating: ½ against the excessive demands by the grooms’ families. Fed-up of being rejected, even by the man (Karan Wahi) she falls in love with, for lack of dowry, Gulrez hatches the scheme of ensnaring a rich groom, then trapping him in a dowry case and making enough money to get her to America. And here’s the other big problem, the film advocates misuse of dowry laws, that are meant to protect hapless victims. Gulrez pretends to be Sania Habibullah from Dubai, parks herself and her father in a Lucknow five-star to interview potential suitors. One of them is Tariq Haider (Aditya Roy Kapur), owner of Lucknow’s most famous kebab and biryani

restaurant. Since he is the richest, he is picked for the con, but after the three days of courtship that he demands—and this is no spoiler—Gulrez falls in love with him. He is incredibly generous, considerate, handsome and smart (why wasn’t he snapped up earlier?) Faisal keeps the tone light and the romance frothy, but there is always the undercurrent of deception that is unpleasant. If a bright and talented girl was encouraged to fight dowry in a straightforward manner, and not resort to crime, the film would have resonated strongly with young women. The propaganda element is not dulled here, just made unsavoury. Still, at least Habib Faisal tries to tackle a problem that refuses to go away, in spite of all the progress Indian woman have made. That, and the lead pair’s performances, make this one worth a look.

A DAY CAN MAKE L

ady Gaga arrived in Athens on Wednesday revealing almost every curve on her body in a skimpy seashell bra and racy thong ensemble. Thursday, however, the 28-year-old took her passion for extreme looks in quite the opposite direction while out and about in Istanbul. Instead of flaunting her enviable figure, the star pretty much covered herself from head to toe as she headed out for a spot of shopping in Nisantasi. For her day out, Lady Gaga wore a full-length, loosely fitted black dress, which sported a gold panel on the front. The sleeves on the frock weren’t quite full-length so the star opted for a pair of long black leather gloves to cover her arms – despite the warm weather. On her head, she wore a tropi-

cal coloured head scarf, concealing her platinum locks. She completed her unusual look with a pair of black heels and eccentric matching sunglasses, which hid her famous face – perhaps suggesting that she had been hoping to go out and explore the city incognito. While she was strolling around in the exclusive area in the Turkish city, the singer’s army of fans were seen camping outside of her hotel. Lady Gaga must have caught sight of how many of her Little Monsters had been patiently waiting to catch a glimpse of her as she later took to her Twitter account to address them. Perhaps feeling a little guilty for not paying them enough attention, she wrote: ‘So sorry Monsters! ‘I napped all day and had Cheek to Cheek promo. Promise to come out tomorrow.’ Despite her white lie, implying to fans that she had been too tired to come out, her little Monsters will no doubt forgive Lady Gaga after her rave performance in the city the night before.

SAMURAI SUDOKU 327 MUMBAI | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014

Each Samurai Sudoku puzzle consists of 5 overlapping “classic” 9x9 Sudoku sub-puzzles. Each 9x9 sub-puzzle must be solved according to the rules of Sudoku: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain all digits from 1 to 9 therefore, digits cannot be repeated. Each Samurai Sudoku puzzle has one solution only.

LEISURE

DOMINOES 327

17

A normal set of dominoes — that is, one instance of every (unordered) pair of numbers from 0 to 6 — has been arranged irregularly into a rectangle; then the number in each square has been writen down and the dominoes themselves removed. Your task is to reconstruct the pattern by arranging the set of dominoes to match the provided array of numbers. Please note that each domino is a unique one and occurs only once in each puzzle.

SMILE AWHILE CODE WORDS 210

In each puzzle every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number; the same number represents the same letter throughout the puzzle. To start you off, we give you three letters and the numbers which have replaced them. A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!" The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, "The driver just insulted me!" The man says, "You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you."

A man buys a lie detector robot that slaps people who lie. He decides to test it at dinner. He asks his son, "Son, where were you today during school hours?" "At school." The robot slaps the son. "Okay, I went to the movies!" The father asks, "Which one?" "Harry Potter." The robot slaps the son again. "Okay, I was watching porn!" The father replies, "What? When I was your age I didn't even know what porn was!" The robot slaps the father. The mom chimes in, "Haha! After all, he is your son!" The robot slaps the mother.

A little girl is serving her father tea while her mother is out shopping. The mother comes home and the father says, "Watch this!" The little girl goes and serves the mother tea. The mother responds, "Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?"

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

Fear of losing is gone, says Prannoy

EW DELHI: Indian shuttler H S Prannoy says the success of winning the Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold has erased his fears of defeat and fuelled a dream of working harder than ever to qualify for 2016 Rio Olympics. "I think a title was due for me. I reached so many quarterfinals in tournaments, played against top players but I was not winning a title. Many people even told me that I was not playing well. But I knew I could win and I think it came at the right time," Prannoy, who jumped 12 places to reach world no. 31 yesterday, told PTI. "Now I think the fear of losing is gone. I am not so nervous anymore. Earlier I used to be very nervous in the first two rounds. Now I am able to think on court and manage myself. I am confident on court. Such title wins boost you to train harder," said the 22-year-old, who clinched the maiden title of his career after winning the USD 1,25,000 Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold last Sunday. Asked if Rio Olympics ever crossed his mind, he said: "Well, I had it in my mind earlier this month. I think it is possible for me. I know it is very difficult because there is a lot of competition, there is Parupalli Kashyap, K Srikanth and RMV Gurusaidutt but I know if I can play well, I can do it. But it is too early and I am not thinking about it now." Ever since his historic silver at 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and runnersup finish at Bahrain International Challenge in 2011, Prannoy has been grappling with injuries. He said it was a tough phase to sit on the sidelines after he hurt his back in 2012. "I suffered lots of injuries in 2011 and 2012. I hurt my knee in 2011 just before the nationals and then again I injured it in 2012 but my back injury before the 2012 Vietnam Open was bad.”

NCHEON: They were mostly off the mark in the recent World Championships but Indian shooters will nonetheless be expected to deliver a bagful of medals when the event kickstarts in the Asian Games here today. Shooters from 34 countries are in fray at the Ongnyeon International Range till September 30, competing for a total of 44 medals in the individual and team competitions. In fact, the opening gold medal of the 17th Games will decided in shooting. The events will commence with the women's 10m air pistol and men's 50m pistol in which four titles would be decided today. India culled one gold medal through Ronjan Sodhi in men's double trap, three silver medals and four bronze in the last Games at Guangzhou. But it would be a big surprise if they can better this haul or even equal it, in the backdrop of their generally poor form going into the 17th Asiad. Sodhi is unable to defend his title having failed to qualify through the shooting trials and the bur-

den of keeping the Indian flag high has fallen on man-inform Jitu Rai, world number one in 10m air pistol and a gold medal winner in 50m free pistol at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Armyman Rai starts as perhaps India's biggest medal hope in the Games, even

Mantle on Saina, Sindhu, Kashyap for medals

INCHEON: Spearheaded by star shuttlers Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and Parupalli Kashyap, India will aim to end a 28-year-old medal drought when they begin their campaign in the 17th Asian Games badminton with the team competitions here today. India's last medal of any hue in badminton had come in 1986 when the men's team claimed bronze. Ever since badminton made its debut in the Asiad in 1966, India have managed just seven bronze medals with Syed Modi being the only singles medallist in 1982 and chief coach Pullela Gopichand's wards will be eagar to end the wait. London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal, smarting from

her quarter final exit in the recent world championships in Copenhagen, would be eager to put it behind her and guide the team to a medal in the women's team event ahead of her quest for individual glory. Sindhu, her younger Hyderabad teammate and ranked world no 10, will go into the tournament with her confidence high after clinching her second successive bronze medal in world championships. The 19-year-old Indian also won a bronze at the Asian Championship in Gimcheon in April before clinching a yellow medal in the women's event in Uber Cup. Tipped to win the gold in the Commonwealth Games, Sindhu had to settle for a bronze at Glasgow but the Indian shrugged off the

disappointment by winning another medal of the same hue in the Danish capital where she drew accolades by shocking World No. 2 Wang Shixian. World No. 7 Saina, on the other hand, goes into the tournament with Vimal Kumar to guide her after she shifted base to Bangalore to train at the Prakash Padukone Academy where the latter is the chief coach. India are going to field a scratch doubles combination in women's event in the absence of Jwala Gutta, who had to pull out due to a knee injury. Ashwini Ponnappa has showed her preference for Sindhu as her doubles partner, but it will put huge pressure on the lanky 19-yearold Hyderabadi after her singles.

Heroic goalkeeping by Murad fails to deny Don Bosco title Vishwanath Salian | ADC

UMBAI: A valiant goaltending display by Dominic Savio (Andheri) captain Mohammed Murad was not enough as Don Bosco (Matunga) notched a late, late winner to claim the coveted Ahmed Sailor trophy in the Boys under-16 Inter School Football tournament at the MSSA ground here on Friday. Don Bosco won by a solitary goal notched by Snaryas Sau. In a well-fought entertaining tussle for honours, Don Bosco always had the attacking edge but ran into a brick wall called Murad. The Andheri's team goalkeeper Murad brought off a string of saves before he was beaten in the last minute by Snaryas Sau much to the joy of the Matunga team. Western now have 16 points from six matches and are placed in third place, while Navy tally 10 points from three wins and a draw in six games. The match contested between last year’s winners Western and runners-up Navy was a fast paced affair as both the teams showed superb attacking flair and there was plenty of exciting action at either end. But it was a bit disappointing that the match produced just two goals. Western, have themselves to blame for dropping valuable points as they failed to convert a single of the seven short corner earned, the last two in the final minute. On the other hand Navy were resolute in defence and did not allow the Western penalty corner specialist Amit Rohidass the space to execute his flicks as Jaspal Singh was quick and charge out to foil his attempts. Navy goalkeeper M.J. Jakhar also had a good game and made a number of timely saves.

Former national volleyball player Udayakumar no more

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Udayakumar, who represented India in national and international volleyball tournaments during the 1980s, died here today, family sources said. He was rushed to a hospital after suffering a heart attack. Udayakumar was 54 and is survived by wife and two daughters. A Deputy Commandant in Kerala police, Udayakumar was serving as ADC to the Governor at the Raj Bhavan here for the last several years. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award. Udayakumar, who excelled both in defence and attack, led India in the SAF games in 1989 and played in most championships including Asiad during the 1980s.

SPECTACLE. SPLENDOUR. SHINE By SS Ramaswamy

NCHEON: Pop sensation Psy brought the house down 'Gangnam Style' as Incheon laid out the red carpet for over 13,000 competitors from 45 countries with an exhilarating opening ceremony to launch the 17th Asian Games at the main stadium. Psy's performance was the high point of the spectacular show as the world's second-biggest multi-sports spectacle after the Olympic Games was kickstarted with customary fanfare, including fireworks and

breathtaking visual effects. Korean President Park Geun-hye declared the Games open amid thunderous cheers from a capacity crowd as dazzling fireworks lit up the evening sky. The competing teams marched into the stadium in the final act of the evening. The Indian athletes trooped in after Iran with hockey skipper Sardar Singh leading out the smartly-dressed contingent. The Indians were attired in black blazers with the women athletes dressed in blue sarees. The smiling athletes walked in waving the tri-

colour. India have sent a nearly 700strong contingent for the event and will take part in 28 disciplines. The flame was lit up by celebrated Korean actress Lee Young-ae, setting the stage for two weeks of action in the city -- the second Korean venue for the Games in the last 12 years. As is the custom, the event was divided into the informal and formal parts. It began with a welcoming performance, lasting close to 80 minutes, to greet the spectators at the 60,000-capacity stadium that was filled to the brim.

It included a cultural heritage performance of Pungmul Play, performance by a cheering squad, a congratulatory video of celebrities, and K-Pop boy group EXO's performance to get the spectators revved up for the main event. The session was divided into three parts -- "Incheon, the magnet of dreams," "Incheon, where all of us become friends," and "Tomorrow, dreamed by all of us." Initially a video introducing the 17th Asian Games and a promotion video introducing the major facilities

was displayed on the big screen. This was followed by a display of Korea's traditional drums and cymbal-type instruments before emcees Kim Sung-ju and Youn Sooyoung came on stage. Then, a cheering team formed by the city's children, including the squads Impact, Rainbow Air and K Sungsuk Jumping Angels took centrestage, performing to a remix of songs from past sports events held in Korea, including the theme song of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

gold is that the winners of both the competitions will earn a direct entry into the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, which India failed to utilise when they slipped in the semi finals to Malaysia four years ago in Guangzhou, China. India, second-best among Asian teams in world rankings at no. 9 behind leaders, four-time winners and tournament hosts South Korea, have

been drawn in a group which features arch-rivals and title holders Pakistan and their clash on September 25 is the highlight of the group phase. Pakistan start their campaign one day early, tomorrow, when they take on Oman and Indian think tank will have a way to assess them through this game. Though India, who have won the gold only twice in the past, are going into the tournament on a sort of high and with a settled combination after winning silver behind world champions Australia at the Commonwealth Games, any encounter with Pakistan, who are a bit rusty after not having played for almost seven months, is going to be a humdinger. Sardar Singh, who is India's flag bearer at the opening ceremony, will have to be at his inspirational best along with the other senior in the squad, goalkeeper P S Sreejesh, if the team has to go all the way and recapture the gold which the country last clutched in 1998 at Bangkok under Dhanraj Pillay's leadership.

INCHEON: The Executive Board of the Olympic Council of Asia today decided that Indonesian capital Jakarta will host the 18th Asian Games in 2018. "Today it has been approved by the EB that in 2018 will be the next Asian Games in Jakarta in Indonesia," said council president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, adding Saturday's OCA general assembly would approve the final resolution. "I hope tomorrow [Saturday] also the general assembly will approve the final resolution although we have the power because the extraordinary general assembly in Kuwait gave the president the authority to decide and find the replacement to Vietnam." India had originally started to show some interest with the IOA trying to get government support but the move was dropped without the requisite government backing.

Quest for elusive hockey gold begins I

Sardar Singh, Indian hockey skipper.

NCHEON: India will start their elusive quest for the Asian Games men's hockey gold in a new format of the game when they take on minnows Sri Lanka in their Pool B opener here on Sunday while the women's team begin their campaign the next day. The Asian Games will be the first major international hockey competition to feature the new format where the duration of the game has been reduced from 70 to 60 minutes and from two halves of 35 minutes each to four 15-minute quarters with 40-second time-outs when a penalty corner is awarded and after a goal is scored. The logic behind additional timeouts for penalty corners and after goals is to ensure 60-minute actual playing time by eliminating the dead time associated with set pieces and also allowing the teams to celebrate after scoring a goal, the International Hockey Federation has reasoned. The added incentive to win the

I think this group of players sincerely believes that if they play to their potential they can beat Malaysia, Korea, China, Pakistan, Japan and win the title. My view is that we are progressing really well. There is a considerable difference in our level of performance from pre-World Cup to postCommonwealth Games.
