CM Devendra Fadnavis has spoken about a committee under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi for the development of Mumbai Sanjay Raut, senior leader Shiv Sena
R
eferring to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's proposal of a committee headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Mumbai-related issues, Shiv Sena on Tuesday alleged that some industrialists and politicians were conspiring to separate the city from Maharashtra. "In the last one month, discussions have once again started about Mumbai. Industrialists with deep pockets and politicians are trying to separate this city from the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke about a committee under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for development of Mumbai," Sena leader Sanjay Raut said
while speaking to a news-channel. Sena is a partner in the BJP-led state government. According to a PTI report, "There are more than 100 cities that the Centre wants to convert into smart cities, but people still aspire to take Mumbai away. This city fills the stomach of Maharashtra. This city must not be taken away if the Marathi-speaking people are to get the respect they deserve. This is what Balasaheb (Thackeray) fought for. People who want to separate Mumbai will not be able to do so as long as Sena is here," Raut said. Raut, who edits the Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', also announced that 'Balkadu', a film produced by him on the life of the late Bal Thackeray, will release on Thackeray's birth anniversary, January 23. "We want to spread the thoughts of Balasaheb among the young generation through the film," he said. "Balasaheb did not have grudges against any (other) state. He used to say he was a Maharashtrian in Maharashtra, a Bengali in Bengal, a Kannadiga in Karnataka and so on," Raut said.

Residents of Colaba seek a proper Pay-n-Park policy ahead of BMC’s plan CITY
By Khushboo Panjabi
T
here are talks doing the rounds that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has plans to implement the new parking policy from February 1 in the A ward, where some residents stay in a Heritage precinct and most buildings do not have parking compounds in Colaba and the buildings do not have scope of being redeveloped as they are from pre-British times. However, civic authorities aim to start their pilot project vis-a-vis parking at the earliest but have not decided on a date yet. Yesterday, the Clean Heritage Colaba Resident's Association (CHCRA) together with 15 other associations signed a petition in the presence of BJP MLA Raj Purohit which will be handed over to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Phadnavis, Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte, Mayor of the city Snehal Amberkar and also to the Joint commissioner of Mumbai police (traffic) Dr B K Upadhyay and other civic authorities stating that the pilot project of the pay and park policy which is to be implemented in the A ward by the BMC should be t stalled till the grievances of the residents are suitably heard

and considered. CHCRA noted, “The policy is illplanned and against the interests of us (residents). It is difficult to understand as to why the civic authorities are in a hurry to implement the policy without taking into consideration the suggestions and objections of the people living here. If the BMC does not stall the policy, we may be forced to go the legal way. The BMC should have studied our area well before deciding to implement the policy on a pilot basis." Political parties have come forward to help the residents of CHCRA- Shiv Sena's Lok Sabha
member from the South Mumbai constituency Arvind Sawant, Indian National Congress's (INC's) former Municipal councillor Vinod Shekhar also have contacted civic chief Kunte, Mayor, the traffic department of the city, and other higher authorities conveying their problems which has saddened and worried the residents especially regarding the night pay-and-park policy. “The entire policy is impractical, the civic administration should bring in a proper policy which should have proper goals and objectives of this pilot project.” The residents added, “A large seg-

n one of the major tree re-plantation programmes to be undertaken in recent times, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will replant as many as 1,566 trees of various species in Bhandup. However the scepticism of tree experts about the survival rate has raised questions over the fate of these replanted trees. The BMC tree authority on Tuesday cleared a proposal of replanting 1,566 trees in the Bhandup Complex area. These trees were proving to be an obstacle in the BMC’s proposed Tansa mains works. Hence it has been decided to replant them in the same region. However tree experts have raised doubts over the survival rate
of trees that are replanted. Trees expert Chandrakant Lattoo said, “The survival of replanted tress depends on several factors like tree’s age, the method used, transporta Teak (Tectona Grandis) tion, time used, soil, etc. But it is Karanj (Pongomia Pinnata) very difficult to ensure total sur Palm (Borassus flabellifer) vival of these trees. The replanta Peepal (Ficus religiosa) tion of trees has always remained a Subabul (Leucaena leucocephala) dubious process.” Mango (Mangifera indica) Joint municipal commissioner Khair (Acacia catechu) SS Shinde said that they wanted to Kadamba (Neomarckia cadamba) give these trees a new lease of life Satvin (Alstonia scholaris) instead of chopping them straight Gulmohar (Delonix regia) away. “These trees were recently Raintree (Albizia Saman) planted and we did not want to cut Shevar (Ceiba pentadra) them. Hence it was decided that Bor (Ziziphus jujube) they should be replanted so that Umbar (Ficus glomerata) maximum trees are saved.” To maintain green cover in the city, the civic body has decided to transplanting rather than felling. stress more on tree replanting and The chopping of trees will be done only in exceptional cases. If the developer has no space, the BMC will provide him its own gardens or open spaces for the transplantation of trees so that they are not hacked. Opposition leader and Congress corporator Devendra Amberkar has demanded that the BMC should appoint a special officer to monitor the replantation of trees. “We do not get proper information about how many trees have been replanted and how many of them have survived. There should be a special officer to check on this,” he said.

ment of individuals staying here are senior citizens and they need at least one car and some families have two or more cars. The cars have to be parked on the road as that is the only option for the residents' of the area.” The residents asked A ward ward officer Chandrasekhar Chore, on Sunday about the number of people staying in the ward and he had absolutely no idea, which means no survey has been done in the area by the civic officials. Subhash Motwani, founding member of the CHRCA said, “The authorities want to subsidise parking charges and offer free parking to
buses and taxis on weekends which means they are heading towards creating a congestion unheard of as most of the traffic violations in the area as of now is double parking due to illegal and haphazard parking by taxis and buses. This is counterproductive to developing this as a tourism place especially near Taj and Gateway as the parking menace will escalate even further.” Motwani further added, “Let us assume if this policy is implemented, for night parking one has to pay Rs 1800 per month per vehicle and as per the policy if the day parking charges is Rs 60 per hour per day, if someone were to park the car for 24 hours, they would have to pay for 12 additional hours @ Rs 60 x 30 days x 12 hours which comes to Rs 21600. So if you add Rs 21600 to Rs 1800, a resident would be paying Rs 23,400 per month for parking charges which is more than an EMI that one would pay to buy a new vehicle !!! Outrageously ridiculous.” “The BMC should ensure that the residents' are given parking perhaps at nominal fees and not charged outrageous amounts and instead introduce a congestion tax for outside vehicles if they do not want to totally destroy Colaba from being a tourism hub,” Motwani said. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in
Step towards security State Education department orders schools and college to bring in additional security and protection By Yatin Ingle
A
fter the ADC published a story about the lack of security in schools and colleges, the educational institutions are now working towards tightening security, as directed by the State Education Department following the deadly terror attack in Peshwar (Pakistan) in a school killing many students and teachers. On Monday, the State Education Department ordered schools as well as colleges to upgrade and adopt more security measures for the protection of students in schools and colleges across Maharashtra. Chetan Pednekar, Vice-President, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, said, “The security in schools and colleges is necessary and the MNS had written to the state education department regarding this. Finally, the department has agreed and parents now should not be worried about their children's safety in schools or colleges.” The ADC spoke to N T Junerkar, Deputy Inspector, State Education Department, Mumbai Division, who said, “After the heart rending
attacks in the school in Peshawar, schools and colleges across India should be concerned about their students' security. The department has ordered all the schools across the state to take necessary security measures and also to consult security experts to set up a protective security team for the students.”

FOR THE LOVE ONE'S PET: This lady's love for her pet Doberman is clearly seen in this photo snapped at the Bai Sakarbai Dinsha Petit Animal Hospital, which is attached to the Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), at Parel. She was seen sitting besides her furry friend who was recouping from a major surgery, in the enclosure. The doctors and hospital staff are conspicuous by their absence because they are reported to be on strike.
Town of twins
The tiny village of Kodhini in Kerala boasts of at least 250 sets of twins—and that’s out of only about 2,000 families! Some families even have multiple pairs. The number is freakishly high, nearly six times the global average, and so far no one’s come up with a plausible explanation for it. It’s not for lack of trying: Dr
Krishnan Sribiju has studied the town for a couple of years now, but every new statistic he unearths only makes the case more baffling. For one thing, he says, the frequency of twin births seems to grow every year. Also, Sribiju says, twins are born usually to older, more mature women. In Kodinhi that is not the case, because marriage happens much younger here, at around 18 to 20 years old, and families begin
very soon after. Twin sisters Fatima Kutty and Kuhni Pathutty are the town’s oldest, at the age of 65. Records suggest that their birth took place at the beginning of Kodhini’s unique trend. The year 2008 saw an impressive 15 twin births out of only 300 healthy deliveries, and 2009’s total could be even higher. At least that should cut down on the number of hospital visits by pregnant women!
Train No 399: India’s Cancer Train
The train that rides into Bikaner with families of cancer patients.
In a small farm town called Bathinda, Train No 399 stops at the station every night at around 9.30. What's different about this train is that the passengers are all cancer patients and their families, travelling to Bikaner for their cancer treatment. Thus the train is also known as “the cancer train.” Cancer has been considered an urban disease because of the city’s pollution, but there are more and more cancer patients turning up in rural areas these days. According to a study conducted
at one of India’s most respected medical institutes, farmers who use large amounts of pesticides are more susceptible to cancer compared to those who use less. Researchers also said that their findings do not prove that pesticides cause or directly increase the number of cancer cases. In light of this, most cancer patients that ride “the cancer train” are part of a medical mystery. The thing is, production is good, but everyone is getting ill. The health of people around here is deteriorating, said one villager.

inister for Finance and Planning Sudhir Mungantiwar has got his poll promise of banning sale and consumption of liquor in his native Chandrapur district ratified by the state cabinet yesterday. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister had made it a matter of prestige and even threatened to quit the cabinet if his pet proposal was not approved by the cabinet. The state cabinet at its meeting held yesterday had unanimously adopted the resolution to make Chandrapur district liquor free with effect from April 1, 2015. Speaking to newspersons at the state BJP head office, the Minister disclosed that the government is willing to forgo Rs 210 crore State Excise revenue for the sake of preventing people from spending Rs 10,000 a month on liquor and the resultant health hazards. He said that the government will create 44 new posts in a special police force headed by superintendent of police to impose total liquor ban in zone created that covers Chandrapur, Wardha and Gadchiroli districts. Mungantiwar stated that the government will implement a rehabilitation plan for the workers at liquor shops.
Sudhir Mungantiwar Besides, a troupe will be created which will visit all the 1,700 villages in the district to spread the message of liquor prohibition. The government will also increase the number of de-addiction centres in the district. He added that the government will not extend the licenses of the 515 liquor shops in the district beyond March 31, 2015. Replying to queries over how he planned to overcome the revenue shortfall, he added that more than the revenue loss which could be compensated by raising taxes from other sources, the health of the people was of paramount importance to him. Commenting on the continued consumption of liquor in Wardha district, Mungantiwar said that it was ironical that while there was ban on

sale of liquor in Wardha district liquor was still consumed. He said that the government now plans to raise the fine and also provide externment of habitual offenders. Mungantiwar had been raising the issue of liquor ban since 2008. His earlier exploits of forcing the government to accept his demands were ban on cow slaughter, renaming Amravati university after Saint Tukdoji Maharaj, creation of Gondwana university and renaming Pune university after social reformer Savitribai Phule. The state cabinet yesterday also approved the proposal to waive off the sugarcane purchase tax which was being levied on the remunerative sugarcane price paid by sugar mills to farmers. The rebate amounts to Rs 700 crore. Besides, the state cabinet also approved the decision to pay second installment of Rs 2,000 crore for farmers affected by drought and unseasonal rains. For this, the government has raised the funds from the Contingency Fund for which the limit of the fund has been raised from Rs 150 crore to Rs 2,150 crore. This amount will be paid to farmers next week even as the Centre is yet to approve the Rs 4,803 crore relief package sought by the state.
wife of Uday Wagh, a trusted aide of Minister for Revenue Eknath Khadse. Sources disclosed that in a quick realignment of internal grouping within the BJP, state party president Raosaheb Danve, within just two weeks of taking charge, has moved close to Khadse and Minister for School Education Vinod Tawde both of whom are being considered as rivals to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The new triumvirate in the party is keen on checkmating Fadnavis. Khadse has on several occasions made his feelings known for being overlooked as the Chief Minister, being the senior most among the party MLAs. Tawde too is maintaining a low profile as of now after airing his desire to become the home minister, but instead had to be content with the education portfolio. Sources disclosed that while the name of state party treasurer Shaina NC was not in the contention, some party leaders were surprised at state chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari being overlooked again for the third time in a row. Bhandari, the most articulate face of the party was overlooked for the May 2014 Lok Sabha elections, again for the October 2014 Assembly elections and again now for the Legislative Council elections as well.

hief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday agreed to Mumbai Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and MLA Ashish Shelar's demand for demarcation from a central government approved agency, of the 69 gaothan areas and koliwadas in Mumbai and giving fungible Floor Space Index (FSI) to old cooperative housing societies, paving the way for their redevelopment. Disclosing this to newspersons at state BJP office, he said that the decision to allow fungible FSI to about 10,000 old housing societies will pave the way for their redevelopment and also allow tenants to enclose their flower beds and make minor constructions like constructing security guard cabins. He said that under the new Development Control Rules (DCR) the new cooperative housing societies were entitled to 0.33 fungible FSI. However the flower beds, galleries, pump room, security guard cabins were not part of the original FSI of
Ashish Shelar the building. These buildings could only get the fungible FSI after redevelopment of the building. Shelar stated that the move will also enable the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) get additional revenue of Rs 1,500 crore by sale of fungible FSI to these old cooperative housing societies. Com-
menting upon the 69 Gaothans and Koliwadas of Mumbai, he said that with the government agreeing to the demand for demarcation it will pave the way for their redevelopment. At present the inhabitants are unable to carry out any redevelopment as the areas come under the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) provisions.

NCP's Vidya Chavan allegedly demanded that the complaint against police constable Rohidas Namdev Bodke be withdrawn
By Santia Dudi
I
n the hearing of the anticipatory bail application (ABA) of police constable Rohidas Namdev Bodke, 44, who allegedly assaulted two brothers when they refused to hand over Rs 2,000 as protection money, Public Prosecutor (PP) Iqbal Solkar produced CCTV footage of police constable Bodke assaulting two brothers. The hearing was presided over by special sessions judge PD Ambekar on Tuesday. PP Solkar told the ADC, “The entire act was caught on CCTV cameras of a nearby showroom. The footage is important evidence in the case which will expose the police constable. Also NCP's Vidya Chavan, Member of Legislative Council (MLC), visited the DB Marg police station and threatened the police not to take any action against the accused police constable. The police has prepared the
Vidya Chavan case diary for the same.” SPI Suresh from DB Marg police station told the ADC, “Vidya Chavan visited the police station and asked to withdraw the complaint against the accused, stating that the victims were eveteasing girls in the area. But nothing was seen in the CCTV footage. In fact both the victims didn't even cross over to the place were the girls were standing.” The victim, Azahar Anwar
Ansari (20), used to work at a hotel at Grant Road. Bodke and the three others were residing near Sheetal Estate, located in front of the hotel where the victim was working. They used to demand Rs 2,000 from him as protection money. On October 30 last year, at 3.30 pm, when Azahar was coming out of the hotel, Rohidas and three of his friends demanded money from him again and beat him up. Azahar managed to escape and went to his brother. After one hour, at around 4.30 pm, the four accused allegedly assaulted both the brothers with bats and sticks. Bodke and other accused are charged for extortion (IPC 384), voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons (IPC 326), intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace (IPC 504) and criminal intimidation (IPC 506/2), attempt to murder (IPC 307), and unlawful assembly (IPC 141).
Rulers walk-off as opposition passes budget in MBMC house By Suresh Golani
I
t was an unprecedented situation in the history of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), when the opposition parties passed their budget resolution for the 2014-15 fiscal, in the absence of the mayor, commissioner and members from the ruling alliance. Following directions from the state government’s Urban Development Department (UDD), the MBMC had convened a special budget session on Tuesday. This too exactly 11 months after the standing committee presented its annual budget of Rs 1137.50 crore for the current fiscal on February 26,
2014. Municipal secretary Haresh Patil was in receipt of two budget resolutions-one moved by the NCP-led ruling alliance and the other by the BJP-led opposition. While the rulers banked upon original figures of the standing committee, the opposition benches mooted the resolution seeking incorporation a hike of around Rs 44 crore. Instead of putting the resolution to vote, Mayor Catlyn Pereira ended the meet and walked off immediately after passing a ruling seeking government guidelines to decide the fate of both the budget resolutions. However, this did not deter the BJP-led opposition from carrying on with the

Both sides mounted a violent attack on each other. “Such acts which are bound to trigger law and order problems will not be tolerated. ransport Commissioner Mahesh Zagade after taking charge had said that he would use technology in order to detect the autorickshaws and taxis location which would also help in curbing violence against women. The transport department has also planned to introduce RFID system which would clearly spell out difference between legal and illegal autorickshaws. Besides, clarifying the difference between legal and illegal auto rickshaws and taxis, RFID will also give access only to authorised autorickshaws and taxis to get CNG from the pumps. Speaking to the ADC, B. I. Ajri, Regional Transport officer, Eastern Mumbai, said, “The GPS installed in the autorickshaws and taxis will very soon come in the city, I have been working very closely with it. We are working forward in order to get figure out about what more technologies can be used in order to easily access the location of the autorickshaws
RTO plans to adopt schools Will impart road safety measures to children from the beginning of semester By A Staff Reporter

he Wadala Regional Transport office (RTO) has adopted two schools in order to impart road safety knowledge and awareness to the students from a very young age. The RTO is in the process of creating a whole new syllabus on road safety and awareness and introducing it as a subject for the children. The RTO is in talks with Godrej School and Guru Govind High School regarding this. B I Ajri, regional transport officer, eastern Mumbai, told the ADC that the new generation should understand the importance of road safety. “We want the children to know about road safety right from the beginning, therefore we have taken this step. Including road safety in the syllabus is a right step taken in the right direction,” he said.
Transport Comm Mahesh Zagade and taxis. The system of implanting GPS once the autorickshaw and taxis are made in the manufacturing unit will be introduced so that the taxis and rickshaws are already equipped with GPS. However, the autorickshaw and taxis which already exists will have to add it. This will be very helpful as it will not only help in locating the autorickshaw and taxis but will also prevent violence as the autorickshaw and taxi driver will know that every move of theirs is being moni-
tored.” Ajri speaking about the cost of the installation of GPS and RFID, said, “For the rickshaws and taxis which are already on the streets and will have to install the GPS and other technology a minimal amount will be charged which has not been decided yet. However, for the new taxis the systems will be installed, we are in talks with the manufacturers.” Speaking to the ADC, Mahesh Zagade, said, “There is technology available which will be used such as bringing in Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) and installing GPS in the taxi and autorickshaw metres will be very helpful.” Thampy Kurain, Secretary, Autorickshaw union, said, “Installing the RFID will be very good as it will clearly detect the illegal autorickshaws running on the streets. RFID's will help a lot even for autorickshaw and taxi drivers at the time of filling in CNG gas. However, the GPS system should be available free of charge.” aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

he common sight of seeing people running from one place to another with their patients in tow at the BMC-run hospitals in a bid to find the wards or the departments they want to reach, will hopefully be a scenario of the past because the BMC has set up help desks at two of its major hospitals viz Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital commonly known as Sion Hospital and KEM hospital while doing the same for Nair hospital is in the pipeline. These help desks are set up to guide people through the labyrinth of these hospitals and hence not waste precious time in locating wards and departments. “This is a good thing. Now we don't have to keep asking people for directions to reach a ward. At times
The help desk at KEM hospital people end up giving us wrong directions and we keep making rounds of the same place again and again. This was so frustrating. But now we know whom to approach to get the right directions to reach where we want to go,” said a relative of a patient at KEM hospital.
Speaking about this initiative that has been in place since a few months now, Dr Avinash Supe, the newly appointed dean of KEM hospital said, “This was a must for the hospitals and we have been fighting to get a system in place since three to four

years now because people often keep looking for wards and waste time. This was a major problem. There were plans to put up signage but that did not work because of issues like language being a barrier, no proper visibility etc. So we decided that we will appoint staff to help people.” Currently, there are around five to six such staffers appointed at these hospitals who work in shifts and are placed at strategic points like the casualty ward, the outpatient department, the entrance of the hospital. “This was the need of the hour so that patients don't waste time in trying to reach a ward and then feel that there was a delay in the treatment. We have plans to strengthen this initiative,” said Dr Suhasini Nagda, Director, major BMC-run hospitals. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Through a video message, Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, congratulated His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaj, ISKCON Spiritual Leader on spearheading Hunger Free Mumbai initiative. His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaj, ISKCON Spiritual Leader said, “The Hunger Free Mumbai drive follows a coherent logic regarding the fight against malnutrition as well as delegate responsibilities that collaborate on community oriented projects which advance continued need for health and nutrition. My Guru A C Bhaktivedanta Shrila Prabhupad had once seen a dog and a child fighting for the food packet in the street garbage, he was taken back with this incident and had instructed the devotees of ISKCON that no child in 10 km radius of ISKCON temple should sleep hungry. Following the instruction of our Gurudev, we have been distributing Krishna's Prasad in the form of Khichdi to all the poor around our temple and now we are trying to reach more and more people through this initiative and the funds raised through the events in India Rising will go in feeding children from slums.” His Grace Krishna Chaitanya Prabhuji said, “Our goal is mainly to

Ponder awhile… “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” — Abraham Lincoln
Kejriwal’s challenge for debate at Jantar Mantar! A
AP leader Arvind Kejriwal wants to have a debate with Kiran Bedi who is the choice of the BJP for the post of Delhi's chief minister. Kiran Bedi has stated she will have no debate with him. She has further said that she will have a debate with the AAP leader in the assembly. Arvind wants the debate between them in full public view – not in any closed hall or in a TV channel. He wants the debate at Jantar Mantar in the presence of a huge noisy crowd. Arvind is obviously certain that some choice remarks he makes will be loudly cheered by the public. A request for a debate in public is, to say the least, ridiculous. Kiran Bedi has rightly pointed out she does not want any drama and that what she wants to do is only to make efforts to deliver. She says her policy will be to lay stress on governance. She must have sensed Kejriwal's effort to trap her and thus cause her a setback in campaigning. Kejriwal apparently is under the illusion he is a big hit with the Delhi crowd. What he does not realise is that people can be fooled once but not all the time. His campaign tactics are the same as those employed last time. Delhi elections and he may be in for a big disappointment. The people now know that they cannot expect any serious work from him.

K
IRAN BEDI was third time lucky in her efforts to get a poll ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She lobbied with the BJP to contest the 2013 Delhi assembly election. She tried hard again for a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha election. Although she had and continues to enjoy a warm equation with party patriarch L.K. Advani, Delhi BJP leaders consistently blocked her entry. This time, she left no stone unturned to bag a BJP ticket. According to party insiders, for the past one month, she’s been doing a parikrama of important BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders in the hope of gaining entry into saffron circles. Among those she is believed to have met are RSS general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi, his likely successor Dattatreya Hosabale, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu. These insiders say she even dug up a connection to Haryana chief minister and RSS pracharak Manohar Lal Khattar and asked him to put in a word for her in the right places. And, of course, she lobbied hard with Arun Jaitley who considers the Delhi BJP his fiefdom. Significantly, one senior leader associated with Delhi who Bedi did not meet this time was Sushma Swaraj. It is said that Bedi blames Sushma for opposing her entry into the BJP. Despite Bedi’s strenuous efforts, however, it was only after Modi’s first Delhi rally flopped that the door opened for her. BJP strategists headed by Amit Shah realized the risk of turning the battle for Delhi into a Modi versus Kejriwal face-off. A defeat or a fractured mandate like in 2013 would dent the prime minister’s image and moral authority. Internal pre-poll surveys also seem to have played a role. While they showed the BJP ahead of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in seat and vote share, Kejriwal kept emerging as the number one choice for Delhi CM. He was way ahead of all Delhi BJP leaders including the party’s CM face last time, Harsh Vardhan. And so a decision was taken to hunt for a person who could match Kejriwal in charisma and popularity. It is indeed odd that the BJP went for a rank outsider like Bedi instead of looking within. Apart from upsetting local leaders, it is having to live down her anti-BJP past and her embarrassing tweets criticizing Modi. It has also done the unthinkable by deciding to project as CM a Johnny-come-lately who has no RSS pedigree

‘Your innocence is like a mirror’ B
eloved Master, What is Innocence and What is the way to become Innocent? Osho: Sonja, innocence is your very nature. You do not have to become it, you are already it. You are born innocent. Then layers and layers of conditioning are imposed upon your innocence. Your innocence is like a mirror and conditioning is like layers of dust. The mirror has not to be achieved, the mirror is already there -- or rather, here. The mirror is not lost, it is only hidden behind the layers of dust. You don't have to follow a way to reach your nature because you cannot leave your nature, you cannot go anywhere else. Even if you wanted to, it is impossible. That's exactly the definition of nature: nature means that which cannot be left behind, that which cannot be renounced. But you can forget about it. You cannot lose it but it can be forgotten. And that's exactly what has happened. The mirror is not lost but forgotten -- forgotten
because it is not functioning anymore as a mirror. Not that any defect has arisen in it, just layers of dust are covering it. All that is needed is to clean it, to remove those layers of dust. The process of becoming innocent is not really a process of becoming, it is a process
MATTER & SPIRIT of discovering your being. It is a discovery, not an achievement. You don't attain to something new, you simply attain to that which you have always been. It is a forgotten language. It happens many times: you see a person on the road, you recognize him, his face seems familiar. Suddenly you remember also that you know his name. You say, "It is just on the tip of my tongue," but still it is not coming to you. What is happening? If it is just on the tip of your tongue, then why can't
An ally is more important than a party colleague
U
RBAN Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu’s annual Makar Sankranti programme didn’t quite turn out the way he had hoped. First of all, Narendra Modi spent only about five minutes at the function. In sharp contrast, the next day, he spent some 11 minutes at Ram Vilas Paswan’s Sankranti celebration and even had lunch there. Clearly, an ally is more important than a party colleague. Then, Naidu thought he would honour his old mentor L.K. Advani by requesting him to speak at the end of the function. Instead, by the time Advani rose to speak, there was noone to hear him except Naidu’s relatives and personal guests. Virtually all major BJP ministers and leaders scooted once the PM left Naidu’s residence. If Advani was upset or felt humiliated, he refrained from showing it and acceded to Naidu’s request to address the gathering. But he must have been smarting because he had actually wanted to leave early but was restrained by Naidu. The minister persuaded the patriarch to stay on using the plea that Modi was coming and that he must speak at the end of the function. Modi did come and even sat next to Advani and daughter Pratibha. But he did not stay back to listen to his former mentor and guide. you say it? You know that you know it, but still you are not able to remember it. And the more you try, the more difficult it becomes, because making an effort makes you more tense, and when you are tense you are farther away from your nature, you are farther away from that which is already there. When you are relaxed you are closer; when you are utterly relaxed, it will surface of its own accord. So you try hard, but it doesn't come, so you forget all about it. Then lying down in your bath, or just swimming in the pool, and you are not even trying to remember that man's name when suddenly it bubbles up. What has happened? You were not trying to remember, and you were relaxed. When you are relaxed you are wide, when you are tense you become narrow -- the more tense, the more narrow. The passage between you and that which is inside you becomes so narrow that nothing can pass through it, not even a single name. All the great scientific discoveries have been made in this very mysterious way -- in this very UNscientific way, so to speak. — Osho

Is it worth the money spent? It is a proud moment perhaps for all Indians to have the President of United States of America Barack Obama as Chief Guest at the Republic Day Parade at New Delhi on January 26. As Obama would be coming as a guest of India, the Armed forces, the police and the Government of India will take adequate steps to ensure that anti-national elements and terrorists do not in any way try to create unrest or carry out terrorist acts to disrupt the visit. The USA task force of the President of USA in charge of security will also take the necessary steps to ensure a peaceful visit of the President to Delhi. It is the first time in the history of the Indian Republic that a President of USA would be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. such a scheme which is needed by many households, especially where they are senior citizens with no youngsters in the house. There are problems like plumbing and electrical jobs which local plumbers or electricians may not be prepared for because they want only big jobs. This will give jobs to several needy people and at the same time, help citizens in time of need. However, there's one word of caution. The BMC should ensure those who come with BMC Aadhar Service badge, do not overcharge citizens. Perhaps this can be ensured by issuing receipts on the spot, just like the taxis are required to do, or just like the traffic police who charge violators of traffic rules, issue, where details of jobs done and charge levied is recorded. This will particularly help many senior citizens who do not know whom to approach, when their local plumbers or electricians, refuse to come for small jobs. Many Mumbai houses have roofs leaking, either due to seepage through the walls during rains, or due to some flooring work done be people staying above them. Many landlords do not bother to attend to complaints. With the expertise they have, BMC could train youngsters to help such citizens live a quality life.

The BJP has since announced a list of candidates for the various constituencies in Delhi and the NCR to contest the Assembly Elections scheduled for February 7. The BJP has also announced Kiran Bedi as the CM candidate who will lead the BJP in the coming elections. The huge expenditure imposed on our country to conduct elections almost within a year at a time when the monetary stringency is acutely being felt by our nation could have been avoided had only Kejriwal
who had become a CM on default not become a political victim of his own greed. Again, Kejriwal is so brazen that he is back to his antics and his imaginary claims show-case that he doesn't want to look matured and purposeful. He has thus outrageously taken the voters for granted. It appears that Kiran Bedi is the best choice for the post of CM as the Delhi and the NCR is suffering from acute law and order problems and a person of proven ability in Delhi is the most sought after by the people at the moment who definitely look forward to Kiran Bedi to head the Assembly as the CM and instil some discipline and set the House in order as her first assignment on top-most priority. Apart from practical working knowledge and the expertise gained over years of having effectively policed Delhi she has the right aptitude and hence she alone can easily get into the various intricacies, get access to the gray areas and deftly handle the critical situation including strict compliance of Traffic Rules. The Congress is just not even in the race. — T M Uday Shankar, via email

Since Shobhatai is no mood to relent and launching her agitation from today (Wednesday), the CM was somewhat worried while leaving. Significantly, Shobhatai's decision has raised many eyebrows in the rank and file of the BJP as there is no rift between the aunt and nephew so far. However, this is not the first time that family members have had a falling out in Maharashtra politics. Interestingly, in most cases the fight was between nephews and uncles. In the past, NCP president Sharad Pawar has had a face off with nephew Ajit Pawar. The MNS chief and nephew of late Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray, Raj parted with his uncle to form a separate outfit. In BJP itself late leader Gopinath Munde had a run in with nephew Dhananjay Munde who quit the saffron party and joined the NCP.

A gap year taken before college is usually taken to explore interests which you haven't got a chance to during high school; however your interest in that field must be shown in your high school activities. For example, if you've been a very keen environmentalist but could only do activities at a local level like beach cleaning, paper recycling, you could take a gap year to take your passion to a national or global level. However, if you take a gap year to simply add activities to fill your resume, you won't be adding much value to your applications because colleges prefer students who have been consistent with their activities.

the experience they will get. But it is not fair, considering the amount of work they do. I cannot really give a salary range because it varies so much, but I can say that waiting people (waiters) often make more money than managers – and they leave with money in their pockets, and they don't take home the responsibilities like a manager does. Restaurant management experience only comes with time. The more experience you have, the better seasoned you are and the more valuable you are not only to yourself, but to any company. Every profession has its plus and minus points. The challenge of being a restaurant owner and manager is to always try to make your business better, being the best you can, re-evaluate, create, be different, and carve a niche for yourself. For the future I plan to spread the taste to other parts of the city. The job market right now in Mumbai for managers and restauranteurs is good. It is all about the economy and consumer confidence. In five or ten years I really do not know what will be happening, but people will still need to eat and this means the business will be in demand. eading is one of the foundation stones of education. Before a child learns to write, he has to start recognising what is written, be it alphabets, numbers or signs. Once he begins to identify them, he then is ready to reproduce them through writing. Thus, formally or informally, reading starts right from the time a child is exposed to any form of content that needs to be comprehended and reproduced. It is reading what is written that connects him with all that he learns. A child’s mind is like a mould of clay. It can be shaped and developed in any way that it is trained in. It is like a blank board, which is fresh and is not only receptive but also ready to accept all that is fed to it because it has no past baggage. Besides, kids today are far more adept at grasping what they are taught, thanks to the changing environment and exposure to newer learning methods. Hence, it is important to utilise this mix of available
resources and the child’s potential to learn faster and channelise in the right direction the concept of early reading. Early reading is nothing but training the kids to start reading at an early age. This can only be achieved by develop<<Jeetendra Karsan ing a liking for books in the child. However, this needs to be done carefully as it is a habit that needs to be cultivated for life. Also, it requires immense patience and commitment of personal time to the child. It is important to generate curiosity in the child about books and why they are interesting. This can be done by: Reading to the child from an early age in a manner that interests him. Reading with the child. Connecting the fictional characters to real life friends and surroundings, and Sometimes by enacting to the child what is written in the book Reading as a habit has a number of advantages – developing vocabulary, increasing attention spans, preparing better for school and a thirst for knowledge being some of them. Reading fiction can help them develop their imagination and creativity. Hence, learning to read at an early age definitely gives the child an edge over his peers in the overall development. Presently, in India, kids learn to read by an average age of seven, which too is forced by the current education system. As a result, the kids restrict themselves to academics and rarely venture beyond their textbooks when in school. Besides, exposure to television and technology (games on computers/laptops and mobile phones) at an early age further limit their time spent on reading. Hence, at an age

ly eating out more and they like to try various cuisines. There was a time when people only ate at home and were content with their typical food habits. Now the scenario has changed and people love to experiment with food. This is why many specialty restaurants are coming up. Also with couples working and coming home late, many families prefer to eat out rather than prepare food at home. People also like to socialise more these days. Instead of calling guests at home they prefer to entertain them in a restaurant. This takes care of the menu and the mess at home after the party is over. Indian cities are going through a restaurant revolution. Urbanising, double-income families, changing lifestyles and changing food preferences are boosting the food market. Eating out has grown from a once in a while occasion to becoming an occasion by itself. It has become a form of entertainment for people today. The new eating out habit has propelled the restaurant industry. My advice for those who want to set up a restaurant is - go for it and do not be afraid. If you believe in yourself you can do anything. Dream big, why not, it's your life. The more you connect with people the more exciting the dream becomes.
when they should love to read and should be able to pick a book of their choice to enjoy it, they are still trying to figure out the names of the authors. And this further reflects on how this reading habit is carried forward. According to the 2010 National Youth Readership Survey, though 74 per cent of youth were literate, only around 25 per cent of them claimed to be reading regularly. However, despite this, the scenario is far better in India when compared to other countries. According to NOP World Culture Score Index, in terms of number of hours of reading per person, India still makes the rest of the countries look bad. India stands at the top with the highest number of hours of reading per person per week at 10 hours, 42 minutes followed by Thailand at 9 hours, 24 minutes and China at 8 hours. (http://mentalfloss.com/article/55344/which-countryreads-most). Yet, there is a constant decline in these numbers in India as per the National Youth Readership Survey. Love for books can only develop when reading starts early. Hence, some schools all over the world including India have started emphasizing on early reading. In the words of Susan B Nueman, PhD, Director – Centre for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement at University of Michigan, a renowned name in this field, “Teaching motivation is key. Children develop motivation to read by being read to often, learning first hand the pleasures that reading can bring.” Today, with the availability of more than a dozen methods of learning, one needs to realise that nothing can substitute reading because all learning starts with reading. Reading does not necessarily have to be only through books alone, thanks to technology, it can be done through mobiles, laptops and even kindles. The essential point is that reading as a habit has to be cultivated and nurtured and for this to become a passion from being a mere necessity the seeds have to be sown at an early age for kids.

ccess to decent and affordable housing is a fundamental need and right of every human being. However, housing is becoming one of the least affordable Human Right. The exhibition '4D Living: From Housing to Affordable Living' organised by IIT Bombay’s Industrial Design Centre (IDC) showcased ideas to solve problem of affordable housing through the Industrial Designer's lens. The exhibition was inaugurated by Arun Kashikar, Head, R&D Tata Housing. The exhibition explores the far-reaching benefits of good design for residents and their broader communities. After almost four years of brainstorming and committed planning and design, the IDC has come up with two different variants of 3D and 4D Homes which is a unique design that boasts of both affordable and sustainable design elements. ple of how the creative economy works to contribute and help solve important economic development issues facing our nation. to understand the consumers, their needs and affordability. Different games were created to study the differences in needs, aspirations and dreams of the target group. This helped the team shape the new thinking towards affordable

housing and evolve new strategies and directions. These strategies can now generate range of innovative housing typology options to accommodate differences in the needs of people across all market segments. These games and research findings are also displayed in the exhibition.
What is 3D living? 3D project is an intervention to better the living of people by some degrees. Due to lack of space & resources, low-income people need to optimize their living by utilizing every inch of the spatial volume. This includes the floor-space and the height of the shelter. The vertical spaces are treated as the third dimension of the solution. The idea of 3D living started with the question “How can a family of six be accommodated in a 10 feet x 10 feet and 13 feet high space?” The internal space was used to fit in a set of specially designed furniture components to create different layouts and levels. Foldable and smartly designed furniture can change a small room into a virtual two floor house. The flexibility ensures multiple uses of the spaces. For example, when not in use, part of the bathroom foldsin thus increasing the kitchen space. What is 4D Living? The 4D living basically targets the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the Society and new migrants to the city who want a better living but can’t afford it. 4D living is an eco-system of "shared & smart serviced-living" creating new housing typologies. It is a unique concept that aims at providing transients and settlers the comforts of modern housing without spending much. This dimension works in two different "avatars". Initially the services can be shared by people with the service provider getting paid for the services rendered. This decreases the cost of living for the EWS.

« OFFBEAT CAREER By Sukanya Roy Choudhury
H
ave you ever travelled to a popular destination, wandered around the famous monuments and stared at a structure which makes no sense to you at all. Well, that is because most of us visiting these destinations are lost in translating the meaning of these beautiful places, monuments and structures of our country, which we once learnt in history some time during our childhood. The essence of these destinations elevate when one understands the true meaning of these monuments, structure or the city which was once built by the British, the Mughals and others who invaded India. The knowledge of these monuments can only be told by a licenced guide. These guides have been trained and authorised by the Government of India to impart knowledge about the places of tourist interest through which the true meaning of these places can be known. The Government of India bifurcates the country into four zones – East, West, North and South. These zones further announce the requirement for guides through various newspapers and other modes of
communication. They depend upon the lack of guides available during the peak seasons of tourist arrival. For Indian tourism, one's basic qualification should be a graduate degree in any field with a knowledge of English and Hindi. For Maharashtra tourism, the basic qualification is graduation in any field plus the knowledge of English, Hindi and Marathi. Knowing a foreign language is an added advantage for both. Once enrolled, a written entrance exam along with vivas are conducted. The selected participants are then trained for three months (theory) plus one month (on practicals). The later one month includes visiting various places of tourist interest and the significance of these places are taught. With tourism increasing in our country many places are being explored and added in tour packages offered by the travel agents and thus included in the training. After the completion of the training, the participants have to pass exams – written and oral. On passing in these exams, one goes on to become a licenced guide for the designated location. Being a guide has no limit to age. However one must be physically and
mentally fit. This certification is passed by the designated doctor. The money that a guide earns, completely depends on the number of tours one takes. This number of tours is solely the decision of the guide. During the peak season, an enthusiastic guide earns from Rs 75,000 – Rs 3 lakh. Plus there is always tips given by generous foreign travellers. Every guide must renew his or her licence every two years. This renewal is based on added training and the number of tours one guide takes during the previous years. A guide does not work 365 days a year. The work does increase in season, from October to February, and then from mid march to mid June. This also gives enough time for one to engage in other jobs or activities. “Apart from being a guide, I am also a social worker, which works very well for me as I can devote my time equally to both my professions. I decided to enroll in this because my son has grown up and is capable of doing things on his own, leaving me with some time in hand. This is a perfect profession for me as I love to socialise and meet new people and share my experience of India with the foreign tourists here,” said Malati Chakraborty of India Tourism Guide.
Unfortunately this industry faces another obstacle as many of these guides refuse to work during season. This is where the demand is more and the supply is less. Due to which there have been many agencies who have been training students from colleges or other backgrounds to pose as guides in season. This has agitated many of the licensed guides. Many travel companies are very unhappy as these licenced guides refuse to work and hence are forced to take such steps as the show must go on. For housewives, students, freelancers or someone who is on the lookout for something apart from their boring office work, being a tourist guide is definitely an option. Introduction to the culture, the heritage, the true colours of the country can only be given by a guide. And let's not forget the inflow of foreign currency coming to India. A guide is someone that makes a lot of difference to the tourist's experience. The tourist usually comes with a lesser or different perspective which may be negative or without meaning and it's the guide which changes it to an inspirational or a happy and a positive one.

EW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal yesterday set out with much fanfare to file his nomination papers for Delhi Assembly election but had to put it off till Wednesday after his road show made it impossible for him to reach the election office in time. Flanked by senior party leaders including Manish Sisodia, Ashutosh and Somnath Bharti at the rally which turned out to be a show of strength, Kejriwal announced at about 2.45 PM that he had "exceeded the time limit" to file the nomination and will be doing so to-

morrow, the last day for the exercise. Kejriwal had to reach the District Magistrate's office at Jamnagar House near India Gate by 3 p.m. to file the papers, according to his aides. The announcement to put off filing of nomination papers came after the roadshow had covered a five-km distance out of the sevenkm-long stretch between Mandir Marg and Jantar Mantar which it had to take. EC issues notice to Kejriwal
he Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday issued a showcause notice, the second in last three days, to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal for 'prima facie' violation of the poll code by allegedly making a speech where he asked voters to take bribes from BJP and Congress but only vote for his party. The EC notice said the statement, made during a public rally on January 18 in Uttam Nagar in New Delhi, amounts to "abetting and promoting electoral offence of bribery" under relevant sections of the Representation of People Act read with provisions of the IPC. The public speech made by Kejriwal that invited the EC's ire was: "it's election time. When
people both from BJP and Congress come offering money, don't refuse, accept...Some have looted money from 2G, some have looted money from coal scam...Take money from both the parties but vote for AAP. "We will fool them this time. They have been deceiving us for the last 65 years. Now it's our turn," he had said. The notice said the poll panel "prima facie" was of the opinion that by making the said statement Kejriwal has "violated the model code of conduct" which is in force in the national capital in view of the forthcoming Assembly polls on February 7. The deadline for his reply to this notice was on Tuesday.

‘India has 83 crore voters’ N
EW DELHI: India now has 83 crore voters, nearly two crore more than those who had participated in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma said here yesterday that India now "has nearly 83 crore voters as on January 5." "The total number of voters is more than the population of Europe," he said. He said that in the next five years, the number of voters is likely to touch the 85 crore mark "easily". In January last year, EC had said over 81 crore people were expected to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha elections, which include at least four crore firsttime voters in the youth category. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the number of electors eligible to cast their vote had gone up by around 10 crore from those who were eligible to vote in the 2009 general elections. Addressing a gathering here to launch a voters' festival ahead of National Voters Day on January 25, Brahma pointed out that in the first Lok Sabha polls held in
Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma 1951, India had 17.32 crore voters. January 25 is observed as National Voters Day to mark the establishment of Election Commission in 1950. According to Election Commission guidelines on enrolment of voters, for an election to be held in a particular year, only an individual who has attained the age of 18 years as on January 1 of that year is eligible to be enrolled in the voters' list.

Nifty Breaches 8700 Level
NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (January 21, 2015) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Tuesday (January 20, 2015) a net 144.90 points (1.69%) and closed at the 8695 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 8575 points level. It then declined by a point and registered the day’s low at the 8574 points level at 9.26 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 8707 points level at 3.07 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 133 points and closed just below the psychologically important 8700 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 37 were gainers, while 13 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in metal, banking and FMCG stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 1.52%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 817 were gainers, 678 were losers and 34 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).
RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 8509 points level. The next support is at the 8431 points level.
Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance at the 8581 points level was crossed above yesterday. The next resistance is at the 8789 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8659 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8611. Support (2) = 8526. Resistance (1) = 8744. Resistance (2) = 8793. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed two consecutive doji patterns (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive and indicates that the bias has towards the buy or sell side of the market. Further, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the averages are rising and also positively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 8506) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 8349) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 8287) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 7752) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias. Sensex, Nifty Scale New Peak, Experts Remain Optimistic Bulls go rampaging on Dalal Street
By Dominic Rebello
T
he benchmark indices, the Nifty and Sensex yesterday scaled new peaks by rising 144 points and 522 points respectively to register new closing highs at the 8695 and 28,784 points level respectively. Intraday the Nifty registered an all time high at the 8707 points level, while the Sensex touched the 28,829 points level. This was the fourth consecutive session rise led by positive global cues coupled with local cues and these led to a further boost in the already prevalent optimism amongst marketmen. The surprise rate cut by RBI last week along with positive Q3 numbers of blue chip companies resulted in the bulls taking further large positions. “The IMF’s optimistic forecast on India’s expected growth rate till 2016 was another shot in the arm, as was the prediction that India’s growth rate may exceed China’s after a long time. Besides buying in the banking space, a recovery in under-performing sectors like metals as well as oil & gas also added to the rally. Because foreign markets are generally sluggish, it does seem that domestic cues guided by the earnings season and expectation from upcoming budget are driving mar-
ket sentiment. This momentum will likely extend further considering the buying interest among the participants at the current level. The joker in the pack could well be global markets and therefore a sharp eye needs to be kept on that front. Meanwhile traders are having a field day as are bulls while discerning investors continue to prefer stocks from banking, finance, FMCG and the IT pack for fresh buying," said Jayant Manglik, President-retail distribution, Religare Securities. Says Dipen Shah, Head- Private Client Group Research, Kotak Securities. The “Markets continued the good run and closed at a fresh high on the back of positive sentiments emanating from the RBI rate cut, expectations of further reforms from the Government (either within or outside the budget), expectations of ECB stimulus and a slightly better-than-expected GDP number from China. We believe that, further reforms from the Government will lead to improved growth prospects and higher valuations for the markets.” “The rally was led by banking and metal stocks. RBI asking banks to review their minimum lending rate in every three months was seen directed towards passing effects on
Consumer Finance Market To Witness An 18% CAGR By A Business Reporter
T
he Indian “consumer finance market will witness an 18% CAGR to a US$1.2 tn opportunity by 2020. While the market still remains under penetrated (70%+ of households have no liabilities of any sort), the organised players (banks + NBFCs) have developed diverse products targeted at all segments of the income pyramid, across multiple secured and unsecured loan types. Overall, we believe consumer lending can be a significant growth driver for Indian financials in the coming years” says a just released Credit Suisse report. In particular, it believes that the “private lenders (both banks and NBFCs) have opened new loan segments that were hitherto solely controlled by the PSU banks (e.g., small business loans). “Overall, we believe that select banks and NBFCs will be able to leverage their expertise and established market positions to grow their retail loan books faster than the market projections we have painted above”. According to Credit Suisse this would be a stronger second innings. “While the experience of the last consumer loan cycle (2004-07) was bitter, we believe that a number of structural changes in the market could allow for a steady, profitable growth in the next few years. Important among these are the rise of credit bu-
reaus (150 mn+ individuals are captured already), multiplicity of new secured loan options, and the emergence of large internal customer bases for most banks to tap into (especially for unsecured lending). To make matters better, the expected fall in rates should spur growth in rate sensitive segments such as mortgages and auto loans” it says. It believes the next round of retail lending growth could remain orderly and profitable, due to the multiple structural factors that have evolved in recent years. A number of secured lending options have emerged (such as gold loans and loans against property). Secondly, credit bureaus have matured, and brought a sea change in the banks' approach to retail loans. Credit bureaus help not only in screening at origination, but, probably more importantly, in constant monitoring of portfolio post disbursements. Thirdly, the leading banks have grown their own customer bases over the past few years (mostly on the liability side) that they have a ready customer base to tap into. To add to this fertile environment, the expected fall in rates could trigger higher growth in many rate sensitive segments such as mortgages and auto loans. Indeed, for the wholesale funded entities like NBFCs, the fall in rates could also lead to higher profitability.
rate cut onto consumers. This was seen as a major reason for up move in banks. The Rupee also remained stable supporting the up move and inflows. Metal stocks rebounded after Chinese GDP for Q4 came
slightly above estimates though dismal at 7.3% growth. Global oil prices rebounded in previous session though it remained weak today inflows were seen in energy stocks. Globally, Greek elections, US Fed policy meet later this month and largely anticipated ECB QE was
eyed which would provide further cues on continuing FII inflows in Indian markets,” said Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, Director & CEO, WealthRays Securities "Virtually every sector went up in value, including banking, metals, IT, FMCG, and Realty- each of which went up by more than 1%- metal stocks led the way. The BSE Metal Index, which makes up 10 of the biggest heavyweights within the sector, went up more than 3%. Led by Sesa Sterlite which went up in value by a staggering 5.36%, metal stocks rallied with the news that China's GDP came in better than expected. China, being India's largest metals consumer, posted a 7.3% GDP growth, beating analyst expectations. However, there is no doubt that the markets surged from a macro level and not necessarily from a sector wide level. The repo rate cut, combined with an infusion of consumer and investor optimism that the repo rate cut will make ways for the government execute on many of its intended reforms in the upcoming budget, rallied the markets. With consumer confidence at an all time high, it remains to be seen if any correction, at all, will happen before next month's Budget," said Raghu Kumar, Cofounder RKSV.
“Yesterday's market rally proves two things: while there is numbness in the global markets, the India story is going strong. The sentiments are so strong that the Nifty and Sensex have reached their lifetime highs. The rally on the Sensex is led by S&P BSE BANKEX (up ~1.8%) S&P BSE OIL & GAS (up ~1,7%), S&P BSE FMCG (~1.3%). In our view, the markets are rallying on hopes of several reforms measures expected to be announced in the upcoming Union Budget. Further, quantitative easing liquidity from European and Japanese central banks is expected to have trickle down effect on emerging markets like India in the wake of slowdown in the Chinese and Russian economies. According to IMF, Indian economic growth (6.5%) is likely to surpass china’s economy growth (6.3%) in 2016. At Angel Broking, we continue to remain positive on overall markets, considering, momentum of policy reforms and a fall in inflation and anticipation of a further rate cuts by the RBI. Besides, Indian companies are expected to post healthy earnings growth on account of the aforementioned factors, which would be favorable for the domestic equity markets, going forward,” said Dinesh Thakkar, CMD, Angel Broking.
India’s Growth Rate To Surpass China’s In 2016, Says IMF By Lalit K Jha
I
ndia is expected to grow at 6.3% this year and 6.5% in 2016 by when it is likely to cross China's projected growth rate, the IMF said in yesterday while terming the new government's reforms as "promising" but insisted that their implementation is key. In 2014, India's growth rate was 5.8% against China's 7.4%, said the World Economic Report update released by the International Mone-
tary Fund. India's growth rate in 2013 was 5% as against China's 7.8%. India is projected to grow at 6.3% in 2015 and 6.5% in 2016, when it is likely to cross China's projected growth rate of 6.3%, the IMF said. "I think the reform plans of the new PM are promising. We are going to have to see the speed of the implementation," said Gian Maria Milesi-Ferretti, Deputy Director in IMF's Research Department. Responding to a question, the IMF official said the effect of PM Modi-
led government's economic reform would be difficult to predict as these are structural reforms and are growing gradually over the medium term. "Key is going to be implementation," Milesi-Ferretti said. According to the latest IMF report, in India, the growth forecast is broadly unchanged, however, the weaker external demand is offset by the boost to the terms of trade from lower oil prices and a pickup in industrial and investment activity after policy reforms.

BIRTHDAY FORECAST: The employed will win the praise and support of their superiors for their good performance at work. Colleagues and associates will not be particularly co-operative. Beware of people who are jealous of your success. Sports activities will bring you fresh laurels. Love life will see ups and downs. If you are bachelor or spinster, you will now decide to settle down in matrimony. BABIES BORN TODAY: Healthy, medium height, good-looking and long lived. Intelligent, caring, will always speak up for the not so fortunate. Will make a good advisor and has the ability to adapt to any circumstance and make the best of it. Will have a good family life and enjoy success. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): At a meeting or interview your quiet strength and confidence could be mistaken for too much attitude. Be unassuming and you could win the day. You may think of a new and brilliant idea for improving your business prospects. These efforts are sure to lead you nearer to your goal. You may face all kinds of constraints but let it not interfere in your responses to your beloved who may already be feeling insecure.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You will take initiative in introducing fresh ideas in your business and in the style of functioning, which will certainly improve profitability. Creativeness is the need of the hour, and you will soon realize that you were lacking in it for long. Keep yourself open to new ideas. Lack of thrill and romance in personal life could be a frustrating feeling. To find happiness sometimes you have to give love and attention to get love.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): You are well-informed in money matters but circumstances demand that you be more careful while dealing with loans and investments. It seems you are more than tempted to make large investment that the rumor in the market says is a sure shot winner. Don’t take any risk. Nothing much seems to be happening in your love life. Not that you are not inclined but other things are appearing to take priority.
CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Matters concerning new work will come up for discussion. There are some important issues to be sorted out first before you make a commitment. Your mate or beloved may also require some help from you for some important issues concerning family or loved one who is in some difficulty.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): New negotiations and work will go through smoothly. An important payment could materialize today. You will surprise those who have created problems for you in the past by your confidence and enthusiasm. At home there could be reason to celebrate a success with loved ones.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Work proceeds smoothly and you will complete an important assignment on time. New proposals will be offered and should be considered especially when you are being offered advance money. Relationship with your mate improves. Family life that has been strained will now improve. Expenses on house and family are likely.
LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Stay out of trouble. Avoid arguments with colleagues. Play it cool. Expenses are to a certain extent on the higher side. Try to keep a check on your expenses. Nevertheless, you are likely to get money due to you provided you pursue the matter today. Worries are part of life. Find time to be with friends who inspire you positively or relax with music and face tomorrow when it comes.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): The time has come for you to make some important decisions and take a tough stance. A fresh business proposal is worth considering. Someone you can trust should handle financial aspects as you are too blunt or generous which can harm your interests either way. If you have been having problems in a personal relationship, you may seriously consider a period of separation. Seek proper help or advice.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You will be toying with new ideas to incorporate into your work. Go slow with new process and without disturbing your regular schedule. Do not push yourself too much if things do not go your way today. People who are normally quite efficient will also get on your nerves. Your being aloof or withdrawn will not solve personal problems. You need to be forthright and let the other person know what upsets you. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Try to do one thing at a time to get best results. Consolidate recent gains and try to strengthen your position at work. Those waiting for news from overseas will get favorable response. Employment seekers will get a temporary job offer, which should be accepted. You may now realize the futility of long-standing personal association. A parting of ways cannot be ruled out. Keep a check on your health.
CAPRICORN (December 21 January 19): Your work will gradually begin to pick up with increase in your regular income. There will be temptations to start something new that apparently promises immediate gains. However this is not the right time to make investments or seek change in your job or work. Home and family life will be happy and relaxed.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You will have to take some pragmatic decisions about your future. No doubt you are ready for the eminent change but do take your loved ones in to confidence about your plans. You will find a solution which everybody is comfortable with. Happiness in love is indicated. A good piece of advice coming from someone you respect is worth some thought and will help you.

England crush spineless India by nine wickets
England's Steven Finn celebrates after taking the wicket of India's Virat Kohli during the one day International match in Brisbane, Australia on Tuesday.
By Chetan Narula
B
RISBANE: A spineless India suffered their second consecutive defeat as England crushed them by nine wickets with a bonus point, throwing their cricket tri-series campaign in jeopardy here today. Electing to bat, India were bundled out for 153 in 39.3 overs with the top-five batsmen returning to the dressing room with just 67 runs on board by the 19th over on a lively Gabba track. Steven Finn (5/33) and his pace colleague James Anderson (4/18) exploited the pacer-friendly deck to the hilt by extracting extra bounce as the Indians, barring Stuart Binny (44), struggled to come to terms. Binny was the lone Indian batsman to show some re-
silience on a day when the others got out due to poor shot selection. Opener Ajinkya Rahane (33), Virat Kohli (4), Ambati Rayudu (23) and Suresh Raina (1) were out playing poor shots, while Shikhar Dhawan (1) fell to a beauty from Anderson in the third over of the India innings. England chased down the easy target with more than 22 overs to spare to collect five points, including a bonus point, from the comprehensive win. Opener Ian Bell led the England run chase with a 91ball unbeaten 88 while James Taylor also scored an unbeaten half century (56 not out from 63 balls) to take their side home. The duo stitched 131 runs for the unconquered second wicket stand as they negoti-
ated the Indian bowlers without much difficulty on a pitch that seemed to have demons while the Indians were batting. Taylor hit the winning runs, a four, as England reached 156 for one in 27.3 overs to wrap up the match. BRIEF SCORES: India 153 all out in 39.3 overs [Stuart Binny 44, Steven Finn 5/33, James Anderson 4/18] lost to England 156/1 in 27.3 overs [Ian Bell not out 88, James Taylor not out 56] by nine wickets. The other English opener, Moeen Ali (8), was dismissed cheaply off the bowling of Binny, who opened the Indian bowling during the first session as England batted before the break after India folded early.
Australia are now on top of table with nine points from two matches while England have five points from two games. India will now have to win both their remaining matches if they are to qualify for the final. England started their chase before the schedule innings' break and were placed at 41/1 from six overs with Bell and Taylor batting on 28 and three respectively. After the resumption of play, India did not show any urgency or energy in the field as Bell and Taylor went about accumulating runs without any worries. They brought up the 50-mark in the eighth over as runs flowed easily enough with the Indian bowlers not making an impression after a listless batting performance. Thereafter, Bell brought up
his 32nd ODI fifty off 50 balls as the 100-mark came up in the 19th over. The duo also celebrated their 100-run partnership for the second wicket, off just 111 balls, in the 22nd over. Shortly after, Taylor too celebrated his third ODI halfcentury off 58 balls as they completed India's ruinous day. Bell finished at 88 not out (91 balls, 8 fours) and Taylor was unbeaten on 56 (63 balls, 4 fours) as England won in a canter. The only bright spark for India was Binny's all-round performance. He scored 44 runs (55 balls, 3x4, 2x6) earlier and was the only Indian batsman to show some resilience amid some poor shot selection by the rest of the line-up. This was after India had won the toss and elected to bat first once again.

We kept losing wickets: Dhoni
B
RISBANE: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today blamed the batsmen for the lack of partnerships that saw the team collapse to 153 all out before slumping to a nine-wicket defeat in their ODI tri-series match against England here "Getting off to a good start is important, especially in these conditions. But that doesn't mean the openers will always have to perform. If you lose an early wicket, then it is important to have some kind of partnership going and still have wickets in hand close to the end of the 30th over with a decent run rate. Then we can look to accelerate from there," said Dhoni at the postmatch press conference. "That moreover is the game plan but we have kept losing wickets. Today also, there was a bit of a partnership, then we lost one wicket and then we lost (Ambati) Rayudu. We are eating up deliveries to create a partnership but once when the right time is there to accelerate, that's when we are losing a wicket and again the batsmen from that point on are not really able to bat freely," he explained. Indian batting failed for the second time in three days but Dhoni did not seem to be too bothered about it. "When we don't do well, there is a lot of criticism. I feel that is part and parcel of the game.”
I’m pleased my hard work finally paid off, says Finn B
RISBANE: He scripted a memorable comeback snapping five wickets to set up England's nine-wicket win over India in the cricket tri-series and pacer Steven Finn said he was happy to see that his hard work finally paid off. "It's just nice to help England win a game of cricket. A lot has happened in the last 12 months. It was pretty much to a day where I went home from that tour of Australia. But that corner has been turned and I turned it a while ago," said Finn in the post-match press conference. "All that stuff is in the past
now and I am just looking forward. To take five wickets today was very pleasing after the work I have put in. "I always thought in my mind that it was possible to return to Australia and perform. To come here and be in the same hotels and get over those hurdles has been good fun and I am enjoying it," added the lanky pacer. The 25-year-old Englishman said he was happy with the Gabba pitch that assisted him in taking 5-33 as India were bowled out for just 153 runs with James Anderson also taking 4-18. "The pitch bounced a lot
especially from my end. And I could bowl a fullish (sic) length and it was coming at waist height which can be uncomfortable for anyone," he said. "It was partly the way we bowled and partly the wicket. But we used that to our advantage and as a bowling unit we stuck to our guns really well and made the Indian batsmen come to us. "It is always tough to go out and defend a 150-run target. We have a couple guys who are in good touch and you know it's always tough in that situation. Our seam bowlers bowled very well today and
Moeen Ali also supported us well. He gave us a break today as well in the heat and it was very good as well," he added. The Indian batsmen today played too many rash strokes and as such there was only one proper partnership between Stuart Binny and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Interestingly, Virat Kohli, who had a terrific Test series, again failed today scoring only four. When asked about Kohli, Finn said, "I wouldn't read too much into one oneday innings. He is an outstanding player and has the respect of everyone in our dressing room.”

Dhoni said this is our core team for next 7-8 yrs: Wriddhiman By Kushan Sarkar
NEW DELHI: Being Mahendra Singh Dhoni's understudy for the past four years has taught Wriddhiman Saha the virtue of patience and he said Dhoni had predicted after walking into Test sunset that the current bunch will form the core of the Indian cricket team for the next 7-8 years. "MS addressed us in the dressing room after his retirement and told us that 'this is the core of the Test team that will remain for the next 7-8 years'. We should all try and perform to the best of our abilities and grab the chances that come our way," Wriddhiman told PTI from the sidelines of Bengal team's training session at the Mohan Meakin ground in Ghaziabad ahead of their Ranji Trophy match vs UP. The 30-year-old said that he received a lot of encouragement from Team Director Ravi Shastri and chief coach Duncan Fletcher as well as his teammates. "Both Ravi Shastri and Duncan Fletcher were very supportive once MS announced his decision to retire from Tests. They had a lot of encouraging words for me before the Sydney Test as well as the first Test in Adelaide where the skipper was out due to injury. Their mantra was simple. Be positive and enjoy each and every minute," said Wriddhiman, who has now played four Tests including three in Australia. When asked if the pressure is less on him now that Dhoni has retired from the five-day format, Wriddhiman replied, "I have never ever thought like that. You don't play cricket thinking that there will be comparatively lesser competition that what it was before. The opportunity is there for everybody and whoever performs will play. For me, I used to work hard even when Dhoni was playing Test cricket and it won't even change now."
ELBOURNE: World number one Novak Djokovic and defending champion Stan Wawrinka showed no mercy in powering through to the Australian Open second round today as unseeded dark horse Victoria Azarenka won her grudge match. Japanese fifth seed Kei Nishikori and women's fourth seed Petra Kvitova also stayed on course, with 18time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams opening her Melbourne Park account later Tuesday. Serbian top seed Djokovic, gunning for a fifth Australian title, found his groove early against Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene to post a commanding 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win. "For a first round performance it was pretty good, obviously I still need to work on a few things, I'm still developing my game," said Djokovic, who lost to Wawrinka in the quarter-finals last year. The Swiss fourth seed went on to stun Rafael Nadal and win his maiden Grand Slam, and he is keen to repeat the heroics again this year. He got his title defence off to to a solid start with a 6-1, 64, 6-2 mauling of Turkey's Marsel Ilhan, encountering few problems. "It was great to be back on Rod Laver Arena again, it brings back so many memories from last year," he said. "It was such an amazing two weeks last year so it was great to come back here and I am pleased with my game in general and I'm excited to start again. "I can feel that I have a lot of support here," he said. "But it's just one match, now I need to be

Boco joins as Bharat FC’s marquee player
N
EW DELHI: Bharat FC bolstered their squad for the 2014-15 I-League football season by signing Romuald Boco as the marquee player. The 29-year-old Boco joins Bharat FC from English League One side Chesterfield FC. Boco is a versatile midfielder but prefers to play in advanced positions, having been mostly deployed as an attacking midfielder through large parts of his career. Bharat FC will play their first ever I-League fixture against Dempo SC on January 24 at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati sports complex, Mahalunge-Balewadi with the game slated to kick-off at 7 pm. Born in Bernay, France, Boco holds dual FrenchBeninese citizenship. He has collected 48 international caps for Benin, playing for them in the 2004 African Cup
Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), 6-2. The Spaniard is a former world number nine and the Japanese star said it was a good workout. "Obviously, it was a really tough, tough first match. He could be seeded player, and I know he was injured, but still
of Nations. He was the captain of the side that played the 2008 edition. Boco also represented his country in the 2010 edition, putting in several impressive displays over the course of the tournament. Boco has also had a chequered club career, having played for a host of English sides. He began his career in his native France in the 200405 season playing for Chamois Niortais.
ENTICING REMATCH Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion but came into the tournament ranked just 44 after an injurymarred 2014 and a battle with depression.
But she showed why she is regarded as the most dangerous unseeded player as she downed American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2 to set up an enticing second round encounter with eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki. Azarenka and Stephens have history, with the Belarussian former world number one controversially defeating her in the 2013 semi-final with the help of a lengthy medical timeout, which angered the fans. She needed no such tactics on Tuesday, leaving little doubt that she wants a third Grand Slam title in Melbourne after triumphing in 2012 and 2013. "You've got to win seven matches to win a title and this was a great first round for me to really test my game," the 25-year-old said. "I'm happy with what I did... Sloane's a tricky opponent who has big weapons so I tried to stay aggressive and take every opportunity and control the game. I really had to stay focused and composed." Denmark's Wozniacki, another former world number one, had a tougher assignment against American teenager Taylor Townsend, who made her work hard for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win. Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon champion, ground out a straight sets win over Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp, but admitted nerves affected her performance. Other seeds progressing included Dominika Cibulkova, who lost in last year's final to the now-retired Li Na, and men's eighth seed Milos Raonic.

EW DELHI: India's finest ever table tennis player Sharath Kamal lashed out at the parent body TTFI's decision to overlook him for India's Asian Cup campaign after he chose to skip the National Championship for club commitments in Germany. Sharath was dropped for the March 13-15 event in Jaipur as he did not play any domestic events last season, thereby failing to secure enough points for Asian Cup selection. "I do understand their (of the federation TTFI) rules but I think they could have considered my situa-
tion and thought about what I have done for the country in the last decade or so," a dejected Sharat told PTI from Germany, where he plays for top Bundesliga club Borussia Dusseldorf. World No 50 and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist further explained what made him miss the nationals in Puducherry last week. "The situation was like this: One of the players was injured and they could not find a substitute for the ongoing Champions League. So I had to play here as this is of higher priority for me than the nationals. I am the only Indian to have played in the competition. But sadly
the TTFI does not feel any gratitude for my service for so many years," said the 32year-old. Current national champions Soumyajit Ghosh and Mouma Das have been picked to represent India in the competition where 16 players will take part in the men's and women's singles respectively. Sharath can still take part in the premier Asian event if the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) invites him considering his high world ranking. Former player and selector Kamlesh Mehta said it was tough to drop a player like Sharath but they just followed the rules.

Pakistani players have been banned from using social networking sites during the World Cup.

ARACHI: The Pakistani players, featuring in the World Cup squad, have been banned from using social networking sites during the mega event, beginning next month. Team manager, Naved Akram Cheema confirmed today that as part of their central contracts, players would not be allowed to use any social networking site on the coming tour to New Zealand and in the World Cup. "I personally feel only people with loads of free time are active on these sites and I don’t think our players will have enough time on hand for other things other than focusing on cricket and doing well in the World Cup," the senior bureaucrat said. He said the Board also did not want the players to get involved in unnecessary controversies which usually happens when they are active on these networking sites.
Cheema, who has been appointed manager for the World Cup in place of Moin Khan and has also managed national team in the past, said that any player found guilty of violating this clause would be penalised severly. "These players have been
selected to represent their country in the biggest event of the cricket world and they need to give 100 percent and remain focused on their game that is why we have imposed this restriction so that they are not distracted," he said.
Afridi wants to regain fastest ODI ton record during World Cup
KARACHI: All-rounder Shahid Afridi said he will try to wrest back the record of scoring the fastest ODI hundred when Pakistan tours New Zealand and during the World Cup to make it a memorable farewell for him and his fans from 50 overs cricket. Afridi has announced he will retire from ODIs after the World Cup but continue to play T20 cricket. "You never plan out to set such records. It just happens when you have a very
special day and your confidence is sky high. If everything works out for me and it is my special day than I will try to improve the record set by Ab de Villers in New Zealand or in the World Cup," Afridi said in an interview. He said that he was happy to see a batsman of de Villiers caliber now hold the record for the fastest fifty and century in ODIs. "He played like a champion to get the record and it was his special day," he said.
with Grant Elliott and then with Anderson. He brought up his century with a steady accumulation of singles, only reaching the boundary seven times with six fours and a six. But having attained the milestone he was bowled by Thisara Perera and Anderson vacated the field soon after. McCullum, on whom New Zealand rely heavily to get off to a good start, failed to oblige this time with a gentle poke at a Nuwan Kulasekera delivery and was caught at mid on for just 11. Guptill failed to back up from his unbeaten 66 in the washed out third match in Auckland on Saturday as he was caught behind for 20 while Taylor went cheaply for eight as New Zealand slumped to 63-3 after 15 overs.Elliott, who scored 44, was happy to accumulate singles in a patient 88-run stand
with Williamson which ensured there were wickets in hand for the final run chase. Sri Lanka's innings was the product of finely constructed performances by their two elder statesmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Between them the 37-year-olds contributed all but 106 of Sri Lanka's 276 with Jayawardene scoring 94 off 82 deliveries and Sangakkara, who moved up to third on the list of top ODI run scorers, making 76 off 83. Sangakkara now has 13,490 runs, 214 behind Australian Ricky Ponting on a list headed by Indian great Sachin Tendulkar who amassed 18,426 runs. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 44 in a 102-run stand with Sangakkara for the second wicket, was the only other Sri Lankan batsman to top 20 as the New Zealand bowlers carved up the lower order.
